  about a couple of games that we've been [TS]

  claiming we're going to talk about for I [TS]

  don't know a couple years now and we [TS]

  finally got around to it so this is not [TS]

  on the cutting edge of gaming but it is [TS]

  a couple of old favorites that people [TS]

  kept asking when you're going to talk [TS]

  about portal and portal 2 and the answer [TS]

  is now right now you are so if you're [TS]

  took obscure I was nice i'm glad nobody [TS]

  said the cake is a lie that's a little [TS]

  too you know it's getting weird sounds [TS]

  solid cast without saying that but Jason [TS]

  blows and immediately got to do it yeah [TS]

  that's gonna get out the way you clear [TS]

  it just clear the room and then yeah [TS]

  we're desperate everybody gets the [TS]

  harmon yep exactly have a theory of [TS]

  comedy got here you need me to the chaos [TS]

  anyway do not look into the operational [TS]

  end of the device i first discovered [TS]

  these games completely backward in the [TS]

  sense of I had not heard of this game [TS]

  until india not co put [TS]

  still alive on his holiday playlist [TS]

  which is not holiday feet what year was [TS]

  this case about 2008 something like that [TS]

  not that bad then [TS]

  no but I didn't play the game for [TS]

  another couple here is probably i don't [TS]

  know i played this game it's been awhile [TS]

  i I didn't play this last week or [TS]

  anything [TS]

  and.and you who are all much better at [TS]

  games and i am correct me but it sounds [TS]

  like this was a small part of a game [TS]

  package and and it's not that long a [TS]

  game the original portal but it became a [TS]

  phenomenon because then i kept on [TS]

  hearing people talk about portal and and [TS]

  and then I had to play it so it seems [TS]

  like what was this kind of an accidental [TS]

  hit that it was meant to just be playing [TS]

  because I spend it was so the original [TS]

  version of it for those who aren't [TS]

  familiar was packaged with this thing [TS]

  called the orange box which was valid [TS]

  collection of you know half-life 2 and [TS]

  some half-life two expansions that never [TS]

  got finished and the new version of team [TS]

  fortress and then they have this portal [TS]

  game that was kind of talked on there [TS]

  and was sold as the orange box for you [TS]

  know the last generation of consoles and [TS]

  you know it's kind of contact on there [TS]

  and I it seems like probably they were [TS]

  not prepared for it to be as huge a [TS]

  success i mean i think everything valve [TS]

  makes it is pretty good and you know [TS]

  they have a pretty consistent hit [TS]

  delivery system but but yeah portal kind [TS]

  of really took off it was really [TS]

  exciting i remember playing it on a [TS]

  friends xbox 360 in a dark time before i [TS]

  had an xbox 360 and it was you know one [TS]

  of those friends was like you need to [TS]

  play this game come to my house and play [TS]

  it in one sitting and i did that and [TS]

  then I went and bought an xbox 360 and [TS]

  my own copy of portal not that long [TS]

  after that you played on the console i [TS]

  watch out for the pc first and i didn't [TS]

  get looking at with the UH the wikipedia [TS]

  page says they both came out the same [TS]

  time windows and xbox i would recommend [TS]

  not playing this on a console really [TS]

  like any first-person shooter it is much [TS]

  easier i would probably buy it via Steam [TS]

  right now is how i would do it if you [TS]

  have a Mac or a windows computer or a [TS]

  linux computer you could just do that if [TS]

  you don't want to concentrate we should [TS]

  establish what devices we played this on [TS]

  then I played I played both of them on [TS]

  my mac that that's what I did these the [TS]

  I didn't use a console for either of [TS]

  them [TS]

  i also did Mac for both and all I played [TS]

  on everything ok [TS]

  yeah fair enough i had win they'll beat [TS]

  us everything i'm not trying to win i'm [TS]

  just saying like about anything you [TS]

  don't like people people have complained [TS]

  about like the controls on console you [TS]

  have been like okay well let's evaluate [TS]

  this so I beat no it's not a long game [TS]

  like it's a it's an afternoon Nina stop [TS]

  beating them on console and also pc i [TS]

  played on the 360 and I play a lot of [TS]

  pipe laid a lot of first-person shooters [TS]

  on the 360 I don't really have any [TS]

  trouble with the controls it for me my [TS]

  the first person shooters that I've [TS]

  always played you know when I was when I [TS]

  look start playing them where I'm on the [TS]

  macbook marathon marathon to the whole [TS]

  marathon series and and and unreal [TS]

  tournament and some other stuff like [TS]

  that and so when when portal came out [TS]

  and and then many years later i bought [TS]

  it i want to play it on the mac because [TS]

  I felt like I actually had the muscle [TS]

  memory from that and I struggle with [TS]

  first-person shooters on consoles [TS]

  because I learn how to play them on the [TS]

  keyboard and pointing demise and so it [TS]

  was a great nostalgia trip for me [TS]

  because I had that all immediately [TS]

  snapped back the whole you know wasd [TS]

  move kind of thing man i was that was so [TS]

  that was great so on one level portal [TS]

  was just a a wonderful just hit a [TS]

  nostalgic because i hadn't played a [TS]

  first-person game on my back in a long [TS]

  time and not that many on consoles at [TS]

  that moment I think it's also as far as [TS]

  a first person goes it's pretty [TS]

  forgiving right i mean there's obviously [TS]

  some stuff that's timing involved but [TS]

  not a lot and it's not a lot of that [TS]

  kind of twitch reaction it's not like [TS]

  playing counter-strike or something like [TS]

  that word [TS]

  it's you know it's all about the [TS]

  milliseconds of clicking or anything [TS]

  like that it's it's pretty forgiving and [TS]

  fact if you overthink it as i did when i [TS]

  was playing it for a lot of the sections [TS]

  where you're flipping through portals [TS]

  and and you doing lots of momentum moves [TS]

  if you just don't touch the mouse it [TS]

  will realign your viewpoint in like [TS]

  based on the new based on the current [TS]

  new gravity but if you're a first person [TS]

  shooter player you don't expect your [TS]

  viewpoint or especially on a pc you [TS]

  don't expect your viewpoint to ever be [TS]

  realigned unless you move them out so [TS]

  the first time i played one of the [TS]

  board's important woman to take [TS]

  platforms i always constantly as soon as [TS]

  I came out of a portal I was readjusted [TS]

  in my view to be facing the right [TS]

  direction and at the same time the game [TS]

  was trying to readjust my view [TS]

  yeah and it was like why is this so hard [TS]

  until I said oh just don't touch the [TS]

  mouse and just realize you to the new [TS]

  girl [TS]

  30 and you're fine and yeah it's very [TS]

  easy to overthink it even i even i did [TS]

  that because I remember that that was [TS]

  the case with something like marathon [TS]

  you would have to reorient and and I [TS]

  would go through a portal and be like [TS]

  wait a second wait a second if I do [TS]

  nothing i'm looking in the right [TS]

  direction [TS]

  yeah it's made to its the bar is low but [TS]

  if there is there is still a bar because [TS]

  as I've tried to get other people to [TS]

  play this game thought oh this is a [TS]

  great game you can play it in like an [TS]

  hour to part of one that is and and it's [TS]

  fun and it's got a narrative and it's [TS]

  very interesting and we'll talk about [TS]

  all the good quality so I'd say out you [TS]

  you may not be a gamer but try this game [TS]

  and then just to watch people really [TS]

  fail to orient themselves in a [TS]

  first-person shooter because even though [TS]

  it seems natural for us it is a fairly [TS]

  alien concept [TS]

  no matter what maybe it's probably [TS]

  easier on the console but I think even [TS]

  then people just look at the screen and [TS]

  a bunch of thumb sticks and or you know [TS]

  look at the screen and a mouse and a [TS]

  keyboard and just don't understand how [TS]

  to navigate that world that's it [TS]

  everyone real big barrier to enjoying [TS]

  this game because you do need some basic [TS]

  ability to conceptualize the space and [TS]

  move through it [TS]

  yeah I mean I think anyone who's watched [TS]

  somebody try to play a first-person [TS]

  shooter for the first time maybe whether [TS]

  it's a you know a child or that person's [TS]

  parent or something like that it's [TS]

  there's not all that kind of natural [TS]

  take to it i mean i think we kind of [TS]

  take for granted if you can you kind of [TS]

  grew up on it that there's no you don't [TS]

  just instantly jump in and are able to [TS]

  navigate 3d world with you know wasd and [TS]

  a mouse right let's learn skill for me [TS]

  portal was kind of an easy transition on [TS]

  the mac from playing half-life I mean [TS]

  because it was just all yeah and it was [TS]

  exactly the same like the controls are [TS]

  all the same and the world's extremely [TS]

  similar and yeah so that from for me it [TS]

  was kind of just that how it happened I [TS]

  can't even imagine playing it on a [TS]

  console i can't do it i have to say I'll [TS]

  you know i was i was really impressed by [TS]

  how much better the console controls [TS]

  were between portal one in portal to you [TS]

  can tell they took a lot of time [TS]

  particularly with the light momentum [TS]

  puzzle algorithm and I i have to say [TS]

  like I thought I I understand where [TS]

  people are coming from with it being [TS]

  walking on for portal one but I thought [TS]

  portal 2i played on console and just [TS]

  enjoyed it greatly [TS]

  honestly like portal is such an easy [TS]

  game to begin with I didn't think it was [TS]

  that hard even on you know 360 or you [TS]

  know [TS]

  yeah we're plated yeah the guy i try to [TS]

  explain this bill I think you're right [TS]

  that there's this fundamental literacy [TS]

  about about first-person shooters and [TS]

  moving into 3d World and using abstract [TS]

  controls to control you know your [TS]

  perspective and that we can take for [TS]

  granted as being something that that you [TS]

  know well of course it's a shooter it's [TS]

  fine it makes sense beyond that though [TS]

  one of the things I really like about it [TS]

  is as somebody who's not you know you [TS]

  like I struggled with the last of us it [TS]

  is easier this is true but i also love [TS]

  that it was as people always say the [TS]

  first person puzzler i love that it used [TS]

  the the skills i had built up such as [TS]

  they were the literacy of first-person [TS]

  shooters to solve puzzles i'm really [TS]

  interested in like how games teach [TS]

  things and portal does a great job of [TS]

  teaching you how to play Portal alright [TS]

  it builds really incremental II um I [TS]

  mean the puzzles are all really nicely [TS]

  designed and you know they're not too [TS]

  hard and you still get that kind of [TS]

  satisfying aha moment but it does a [TS]

  really good job especially I think [TS]

  portal to it doesn't even better job let [TS]

  things unfold and they still they keep [TS]

  adding new mechanics to a portal to all [TS]

  throughout portal 2 and there's so many [TS]

  games where it's like the mechanics are [TS]

  front-loaded right we're going to teach [TS]

  you everything you need to know how to [TS]

  play the game in the first two hours and [TS]

  then you're gonna do that over and over [TS]

  again for 6 to 10 more hours right [TS]

  portal to keep adding to that he keeps [TS]

  teaching your new things and new ways [TS]

  that things are going to intercept it [TS]

  and it doesn't equate the way thats you [TS]

  know really fun to play a little bit [TS]

  like school though because if you miss a [TS]

  lesson again having watched people and [TS]

  try to get people to play this game and [TS]

  appreciate if you miss a lesson like [TS]

  you're absent today or you don't pay [TS]

  attention because of your 4runner 12 [TS]

  teachers particular concept and if you [TS]

  never really get that concept and just [TS]

  fumbled through level or forget that [TS]

  concept you can be just sitting there [TS]

  and stuck not on the navigating 3d world [TS]

  but like that's the other aspect of this [TS]

  game like so 3d worlds one thing if [TS]

  you're good first-person jersey have no [TS]

  problem with the second aspect of this [TS]

  game is do you have any aptitude for [TS]

  enthusiasm for puzzles and figuring out [TS]

  how to do that [TS]

  puzzles realize on you remembering the [TS]

  very simple you know steps that are laid [TS]

  out before this is out portals but they [TS]

  don't even give it a second portal for [TS]

  all the second part works as a memento [TS]

  marks in portals there's a few [TS]

  strategies you can do that through [TS]

  elements in is the buttons work this out [TS]

  the turrets were you know all three [TS]

  things like Tony said portal to just has [TS]

  a million of those throughout the whole [TS]

  game but even portal one if you forget a [TS]

  single one of those and like the first [TS]

  couple levels it can be you can be like [TS]

  that adventure game where you just back [TS]

  in the old days we'd said you'd spend [TS]

  months stuck like in a room 100 venture [TS]

  game because there was no internet and [TS]

  you can figure it out and when you did [TS]

  you just felt like a dunce it i don't [TS]

  think that will happen to anybody who is [TS]

  remotely good at puzzles but a [TS]

  surprising number of people who are good [TS]

  at first person shooters have no [TS]

  interest in puzzles whatsoever when I [TS]

  think this game is as a weird mix of [TS]

  like I mean there are some very specific [TS]

  type of puzzle in that they're all these [TS]

  kind of spatial reasoning puzzles right [TS]

  now so i mean i think a lot of people [TS]

  who are familiar with first-person [TS]

  shooters build up some spatial reasoning [TS]

  abilities and their ability to kind of [TS]

  navigate 3d space but you know there's [TS]

  some people who that's gonna probably [TS]

  not really resonate with they're not [TS]

  going to enjoy that the big conceptual [TS]

  hurdle is the fact that you have a [TS]

  portal gun and that is the elbow they I [TS]

  mean you would think that like that is [TS]

  the most obvious thing about the game [TS]

  like the hammer discount like is then [TS]

  the name is the main mechanic of your [TS]

  game and yet i will see people looking [TS]

  at a puzzle and not being able to figure [TS]

  out how to get from point A to point B [TS]

  it's like her you have a part of like [TS]

  what you learn which walls you can put [TS]

  it on which ones you can't like if you [TS]

  can see it at this line of sight you can [TS]

  get there how can you get there but [TS]

  bored there and then like they'll be [TS]

  they'll be stuck for an hour on it even [TS]

  after playing the game a second time I'd [TS]

  have definitely come into those rooms [TS]

  where I was like oh crap how am I [TS]

  supposed to do this and then I like [TS]

  women have reported like he did you [TS]

  forget for a second in certain levels [TS]

  that you have the ability to do that [TS]

  even though that's like the basis of the [TS]

  gamepad magic thing that goes against [TS]

  the laws of physics yeah but you're like [TS]

  okay I'm in this room going to solve [TS]

  this puzzle it's getting complicated now [TS]

  especially later in the game and then [TS]

  office and you're like oh right i could [TS]

  just do this and back up in here and [TS]

  then it's done and that was the easiest [TS]

  thing ever and i just thought about it [TS]

  too much [TS]

  so if you like just like John said [TS]

  earlier if you think about it too much [TS]

  it's over you know you you're trapped [TS]

  I'll never forget when I kind of you [TS]

  know like stumped for like 30 seconds on [TS]

  like the second puzzle and portable one [TS]

  and it's like you can shoot one portal [TS]

  and I see the portal far away and shoot [TS]

  a portal next to me to get there and now [TS]

  it's like well I'm already next to the [TS]

  fixed portal i'm stuck right and it's [TS]

  like wait wait wait [TS]

  oh I can shoot another reporter way and [TS]

  then step back into the portal I just [TS]

  get in and you know everything just [TS]

  built from that so seamlessly it's great [TS]

  it's also really nice how even on a [TS]

  second playthrough or even a third [TS]

  playthrough for some people it is still [TS]

  you can still make challenges for [TS]

  yourself you have already solved the [TS]

  puzzle and you kind of know the basic [TS]

  physics of everything and how everything [TS]

  works and how the puzzles are our work [TS]

  but you can kind of challenge yourself [TS]

  to be like okay have few steps going to [TS]

  take how few portals can I throw it [TS]

  makes it really it makes it fun again [TS]

  but so is ok I feel like we're kind of [TS]

  missing the forest for the trees a [TS]

  little bit in this discussion [TS]

  I mean you know portal is portal is a [TS]

  breath of fresh air in an industry that [TS]

  is almost completely lacking in [TS]

  innovation at times and you know this [TS]

  comes from half-life which is a game [TS]

  that you know is a first-person shooter [TS]

  but has just enough of the twist on it [TS]

  to make it an interesting and [TS]

  significant game you know like the the [TS]

  physics mods for for half-life two are [TS]

  actually some of the most important [TS]

  mechanics have ever been introduced into [TS]

  the game industry and i think that you [TS]

  know like the reason people are really [TS]

  passionate about portal is it was this [TS]

  amazing mix of an innovative different [TS]

  mechanic that is just unlike anything [TS]

  ever get a game this ever come before [TS]

  it's not a game that's about mindlessly [TS]

  destroying things yeah which practically [TS]

  every game in this industry is about [TS]

  including my own and you know and it [TS]

  also has this wicked sense of humor and [TS]

  we're we're we're living in this [TS]

  industry where you know we just kind of [TS]

  all not a wink at the lie you know like [TS]

  we're all drowning and BS all day long [TS]

  and we know it we here in commercials [TS]

  and you know in the systems of authority [TS]

  around us and we're just living in like [TS]

  a very insincere society and here's a [TS]

  name that comes along and does this [TS]

  wickedly brilliant satire about it and [TS]

  it was just such a fresh experience and [TS]

  I think it's like like we don't love [TS]

  portal because like the pc controls are [TS]

  better than the console like we love it [TS]

  because it's so innovative well you know [TS]

  I i'll be honest one of the reasons why [TS]

  i am not attracted to a lot of games [TS]

  they come out and I do have many [TS]

  consoles and I you know and I i do like [TS]

  games but and this is how i felt a [TS]

  little bit about the last of this is [TS]

  like I get bored with shooting bullets [TS]

  at stuff especially if it's people like [TS]

  stuff like my favorite things in Halo [TS]

  are like driving the vehicles around and [TS]

  all that and there's there's and I mean [TS]

  really talk about both games anyway [TS]

  there is a point in Portal 2 we're just [TS]

  not only do I enjoy the fact i should [TS]

  close this point I'm not only do I enjoy [TS]

  the fact that i I've got a gun in this [TS]

  game but I don't I don't I create with [TS]

  that I don't destroy with it and i use [TS]

  my intelligence and and I get away from [TS]

  that fire firing bullets and and having [TS]

  the splash of a dead body of an alien [TS]

  hitting the floor or some other kind of [TS]

  enemy but then late in in Portal 2 there [TS]

  are several there are several levels [TS]

  where you're basically painting with the [TS]

  level the 3d level you open portals on [TS]

  drips of goo and then open them up [TS]

  somewhere else and they're kind of [TS]

  shooting out and just kind of splashing [TS]

  everywhere and you're doing a tactically [TS]

  and yet i found find myself really [TS]

  enjoying just the effort of painting [TS]

  these two these beautiful 3d levels with [TS]

  these drops of goo just for fun just [TS]

  because it was enjoyable and and that [TS]

  I'd ever Mary sunshine you might like it [TS]

  interesting [TS]

  yeah about so I i'm totally with you [TS]

  there that I I totally get the first [TS]

  person shooter metaphor and I've enjoyed [TS]

  playing shooters and yet you know is [TS]

  I've gotten older I've gotten gotten it [TS]

  just seems kind of old to me and portal [TS]

  was that breath of fresh air of like oh [TS]

  I can use these skills and have a good [TS]

  time and yeah there's some peril and [TS]

  there's something shooting at me but [TS]

  it's not i'm just outwitting them in it [TS]

  in it I really appreciate that's the [TS]

  thing that made me play there are not [TS]

  that many [TS]

  games that I played you know all the way [TS]

  through in the last 10 years and the [TS]

  portal games were not hard to play all [TS]

  the way thru like I really wanted to [TS]

  play them all the way through i like how [TS]

  in Portal to portal 2 you're constantly [TS]

  berated for being a murderer even though [TS]

  it's do a relatively nonviolent game [TS]

  compared to show the number of murders [TS]

  are committed many other that's right we [TS]

  realizing that there's a story coming [TS]

  you know all of a sudden Gladys's you [TS]

  know her you hear her voice you don't [TS]

  know anything about her but she'll start [TS]

  you know saying things about like oh [TS]

  you're going to be missed you know and [TS]

  you're like wait when it [TS]

  what did you know you're like hold on a [TS]

  second and then the music changes and it [TS]

  starts you know feeling a little bit [TS]

  ominous and you're like what am i [TS]

  walking into here you know it's person [TS]

  look you feel like it's just this puzzle [TS]

  game you're playing this person and [TS]

  you're walking through and i'm going to [TS]

  solve some puzzles puzzles with this [TS]

  cool gun but then it very very [TS]

  seamlessly and and slowly becomes you [TS]

  know this this intense thing that you [TS]

  and then you start finding the dens and [TS]

  you start seeing what's going on and she [TS]

  starts talking to you in a weird way and [TS]

  I just I find that so intriguing and [TS]

  like you say it's so funny and the width [TS]

  that they use and the language that you [TS]

  use you just can't help but enjoy it and [TS]

  keep going but also have a little bit of [TS]

  fear which is great the way they tell [TS]

  that story so brilliant because you know [TS]

  you're talking about her voice and like [TS]

  for the first part of the game if you [TS]

  listen to the way that they edited [TS]

  Gladys's voice they would have her like [TS]

  read three lines and they would pull [TS]

  individual words out of it and make it [TS]

  sound very disjointed and [TS]

  computer like and if you listen to that [TS]

  effect as you go deeper and deeper into [TS]

  the game they start rolling that back [TS]

  and taking it away [TS]

  so what you have like when like you're [TS]

  talking about this sinister earnest like [TS]

  start coming out then they would not do [TS]

  that affected she'd be so it was lesson [TS]

  to lesson to lesson so she becomes more [TS]

  and more human now and more and more of [TS]

  a villain until you get to like the [TS]

  final level where she's doing actual [TS]

  evil soliloquies towards you and it's [TS]

  just so awesome I mean we all agree that [TS]

  Gladys is one of the greatest villains [TS]

  and a video game right it's such a great [TS]

  character might get it yeah we already [TS]

  saw the first two lines for my notes you [TS]

  got the clever gameplay mechanic mix [TS]

  with narrative which was my over [TS]

  everything and then and then that my [TS]

  very first note was the super robotic [TS]

  voice in the beginning of portal one [TS]

  that's slowly is where you really see it [TS]

  if you go play portal what portal two [TS]

  back-to-back because portal 2 she's all [TS]

  smooth silky evil the whole time right [TS]

  versus portal 1 [TS]

  well then remember the Aperture Science [TS]

  bring-your-daughter-to-work day is the [TS]

  perfect time to have protested you know [TS]

  it that the game portals is from was [TS]

  basically like an idea for a gameplay [TS]

  mechanic this poll portals mechanic and [TS]

  you can make a game with just a mechanic [TS]

  what makes it special is the head [TS]

  mechanic lots of games have cool [TS]

  mechanically you could say something [TS]

  like Three's has I interesting [TS]

  mechanically you know combine these [TS]

  tiles and the slide is interesting way [TS]

  that's a mechanic you can make a great [TS]

  game like that but putting narrative on [TS]

  top of it is you know it's like [TS]

  chocolate and peanut butter combined [TS]

  here and it's not like if you just have [TS]

  a narrative you have been a bad game [TS]

  it's not like you just have a great game [TS]

  blipping how to get back and make great [TS]

  games either way but portable such an [TS]

  oddity because it was like look you know [TS]

  it's it was made by a few people with a [TS]

  small you know tie-in type game it's [TS]

  never going to be this grand narrative [TS]

  like like a big huge triple a narrative [TS]

  game and it's never the gameplay [TS]

  mechanic was like yeah alright i guess [TS]

  it's kind of interesting but the [TS]

  combination of the two is way more than [TS]

  the sum of the parts land I i think i [TS]

  think also what kind of game it is plays [TS]

  into it brilliantly in that the way the [TS]

  way it starts you know you you almost [TS]

  expect it's like oh I get it [TS]

  they've got a clever mechanic and they [TS]

  have a series of puzzles and it's [TS]

  literally going to be I mean and you [TS]

  were led to believe that's what [TS]

  everybody thought is I'm gonna leave [TS]

  in part of all this is one of 16 right [TS]

  no yeah I guess we're just gonna do some [TS]

  things and then you get to that moment [TS]

  where it all falls apart and you flee [TS]

  and you're going down the side the [TS]

  passageways outside the things that is [TS]

  such that is one of my favorite moments [TS]

  in any game I've ever played because [TS]

  you're like what is happening now how it [TS]

  out you know i'm going to want you to [TS]

  feel that fleeing a general adrenaline [TS]

  yeah it's really like my god i really do [TS]

  have to get out of here like I have no [TS]

  usage and even at that point you you [TS]

  know that she's probably going to kill [TS]

  you at that point like this the great [TS]

  thing about you know sort of the the [TS]

  mute protagonist and half life on this [TS]

  game as well by time you get up to [TS]

  whatever that level is when the the fire [TS]

  is there and everything and they're [TS]

  going to incinerate you I you're so mad [TS]

  Gladys but she's just been needling you [TS]

  and the only the only way you have to [TS]

  take revenge on this voice that's been [TS]

  in your ear that you're pretty sure now [TS]

  wants you dead is through your actions [TS]

  in the game because you can't yell back [TS]

  and there's no like there's no [TS]

  interaction is no dialogue [TS]

  it's like you you feel like you're in [TS]

  this conflict with what is essentially a [TS]

  voiceover like again it's a small game [TS]

  and economical way to do it is just make [TS]

  the game with the mechanic and just a [TS]

  voiceover like what do you mean just [TS]

  added that it is that your whole [TS]

  narrative is just going to be voiceover [TS]

  how taking and pull it off it's it's [TS]

  very economical and the trick is have [TS]

  really really good writing and really [TS]

  really good voice acting and then all of [TS]

  a sudden this entire world and star [TS]

  conflict in your head with what is [TS]

  essentially a voice happening while you [TS]

  play puzzles like her voice she doesn't [TS]

  even affect the game just dropped you in [TS]

  and then you mean you play out each room [TS]

  and you know talk to you in the elevator [TS]

  right and you know but during the [TS]

  loading screen results you in the [TS]

  elevator and out of that doesn't like [TS]

  reading it's like reading a book this [TS]

  entire world has spun out in your mind [TS]

  like the entire game is taking place in [TS]

  your mind while like your hands are [TS]

  solving a puzzle just like I'm gonna get [TS]

  her whenever you know checking your like [TS]

  escape haha free you know [TS]

  yeah I usually find games with the [TS]

  silent protagonist like kind of [TS]

  frustrating and feel like it's kind of [TS]

  from a certain area of video games but [TS]

  it works so well in this I mean it to me [TS]

  it's weird and half life when you go [TS]

  places they're like scientists talking [TS]

  to you and you just sit there and don't [TS]

  respond [TS]

  um but it works really well in portal [TS]

  with with with glasses the main [TS]

  character with the other characters that [TS]

  they added portal 2 and it's all women [TS]

  that's true that [TS]

  don't even talk about like [TS]

  bring-your-daughter-to-work day [TS]

  self-esteem fun for girls clad is said [TS]

  in the beginning of portal 1 like how do [TS]

  you show who the character is the first [TS]

  person shooter and the very first as [TS]

  soon as you wake up in portal one you [TS]

  are forced to see your player character [TS]

  which almost never happens in any other [TS]

  game unless you shove a mirror in the [TS]

  face because going through the portal [TS]

  you see yourself entering you know to me [TS]

  like it's it's a clever way to without [TS]

  without putting a mirror right in front [TS]

  of you or without having like a readout [TS]

  over the screen saying who you are [TS]

  whatever it's totally clear that you are [TS]

  this woman and for the rest of the game [TS]

  you'll be seeing yourself going through [TS]

  portals you know I wanted to say one [TS]

  thing about the silence which is just [TS]

  you can read it as being I'm not gonna [TS]

  I'm not gonna feed the trolls right I'm [TS]

  not going to give Gladys the [TS]

  satisfaction of talking to her I'm just [TS]

  gonna ignore and roll my eyes and she's [TS]

  just she can hold the whole conversation [TS]

  by herself [TS]

  I don't need to participate instead of [TS]

  it being that why am i i'm not saying [TS]

  anything and they can't even then poke [TS]

  fun at it and portal 2 window when they [TS]

  ask you to say stuff and you you hit a [TS]

  button that makes you jump in it [TS]

  yeah maybe you have brain damage or [TS]

  maybe you don't want to talk to any of [TS]

  these annoying robot think she calls you [TS]

  a mutant monster at some point later [TS]

  later and then I think some kind of some [TS]

  kind of crazy mute or whatever but and [TS]

  then you showed up you dangerous [TS]

  mute lunatic yeah like you're playing [TS]

  the entire game and you're all your [TS]

  actions are your only revenge and even [TS]

  though everything like you know how it [TS]

  works is the game like when you get [TS]

  through a certain sequence certain audio [TS]

  is triggered but it seems like [TS]

  especially because the amount of time [TS]

  you spend solving a puzzle is variable [TS]

  depending on whether you get stuck or [TS]

  not [TS]

  and very often you'll spend a long [TS]

  period of time without hearing anything [TS]

  say because you don't trigger any other [TS]

  events like putting a portal behind the [TS]

  security cameras and hearing the little [TS]

  voice tell you have to do that or [TS]

  whatever you struggle to a puzzle and in [TS]

  your moment of triumph immediately her [TS]

  voice comes in and cut you down again [TS]

  and then you just hate her even more [TS]

  it'll calm even her just parading you [TS]

  when you're in the elevators is kind of [TS]

  its like that's a really nice take on [TS]

  like where this is here so we can have a [TS]

  loading screen right but we're going to [TS]

  you know we're going to amuse you [TS]

  well you know between puzzles so I I [TS]

  have to say I've heard [TS]

  a criticism I hear a lot from people are [TS]

  people that they don't like games that [TS]

  basically plays movies like they hate [TS]

  metal gear for instance because they [TS]

  they don't watch a story they want to [TS]

  play a story and they're they're really [TS]

  big fans of like the first person like [TS]

  you exist in this world and you just see [TS]

  it and story happens around you i [TS]

  usually don't like that i think in [TS]

  Portal I think that this game could not [TS]

  have worked if you had heard shell [TS]

  talking in the reason i think that is it [TS]

  Jason coming back to your comment about [TS]

  like you know how you felt when the [TS]

  world started you know like Gladys tries [TS]

  to kill you and you leap out the [TS]

  incinerator and like you've broken the [TS]

  fourth wall and suddenly you're behind [TS]

  the the scenes of aperture science and [TS]

  yeah you're seeing all these mechanics [TS]

  and like that just broken down scaffold [TS]

  tree and going from room to room and [TS]

  that experience is so much about what [TS]

  you the player are feeling and like do [TS]

  you remember when you incinerate your [TS]

  companion cube that was freakin horrible [TS]

  that her you kill your faithful [TS]

  companion cube and then they they twist [TS]

  the knife by saying you were the races [TS]

  her time you use a nice your face little [TS]

  companion cube by quickly than any test [TS]

  subject on record [TS]

  congratulations you do they always say [TS]

  that no matter what you know pretty sure [TS]

  yeah but from the me if it was so much [TS]

  about what you yourself felt from that [TS]

  like maybe you're a monster and you felt [TS]

  nothing [TS]

  considering your companion cube and I [TS]

  think if you had like shells speaking [TS]

  right throughout the whole game i think [TS]

  it would just be here exactly because [TS]

  the Wonder portal is exploring and [TS]

  figuring it out in your own thoughts in [TS]

  your own journey in your head is the [TS]

  reward of portal so I think this is like [TS]

  the rare edge case like it's really true [TS]

  this this criticism please and I don't [TS]

  think there are any cutscenes and portal [TS]

  1 like with the exception of maybe the [TS]

  very ending of the game like it there [TS]

  are loading screens in which you are you [TS]

  know elevator and entertained by voices [TS]

  but you make everything happen and so it [TS]

  is a right is a conversation between [TS]

  voiceover audio and your actions that is [TS]

  the conversation obviously your actions [TS]

  always gonna be the same [TS]

  always going to complete his room and go [TS]

  to the next room and get it feels like a [TS]

  conversation even though you are [TS]

  essentially being led through a linear [TS]

  thing of cards and triggering a linear [TS]

  series of events that's what good [TS]

  writing can do can make you forget like [TS]

  a book like the book's gonna unfold the [TS]

  way it's going to unfold but you feel [TS]

  like it's a living breathing thing when [TS]

  you're reading because whatever you've [TS]

  got in your head as the platform is like [TS]

  going out over that fire and then you're [TS]

  running through the back hallways like [TS]

  whatever you have in your head is gonna [TS]

  be a lot more meaningful than like a [TS]

  voice actor saying like I gotta get out [TS]

  of here right i mean that no yeah and [TS]

  then we've got right to the music use [TS]

  that they have you are really really [TS]

  good really led to everything in the [TS]

  game for free in addition to the hell i [TS]

  love it just a little radio plain [TS]

  annoying on [TS]

  oh yeah I do [TS]

  i also like somebody who tends to not do [TS]

  the obsessive exploring of every single [TS]

  crevice of every single 3d area of a [TS]

  game I like that in Portal the original [TS]

  when you go behind-the-scenes I felt [TS]

  really motivated to do that partially [TS]

  because the game was leaving me there [TS]

  but also partially because of the story [TS]

  the story made me feel like as Chelle I [TS]

  need to figure out what the hell is [TS]

  going on here and then you get rewarded [TS]

  by the scenes scrawled things on the [TS]

  walls and stuff like that but I liked [TS]

  how it made me feel like oh well of [TS]

  course I need to do this thing that you [TS]

  know most gamers would probably be doing [TS]

  anyway which is trying to figure out [TS]

  what's going on by looking down all [TS]

  these weird different locations behind [TS]

  the scenes in this game and they put [TS]

  arrows on the wall to like as I organic [TS]

  way to integrate like this is applied a [TS]

  place where some people might get stuck [TS]

  so you've been seeing how long on the [TS]

  wall already anyway so if we put a [TS]

  scroll Darrow it there's a gameplay [TS]

  reason for there to be essentially hint [TS]

  in the game reminding people who might [TS]

  not be sure [TS]

  oh by the way you should go this way [TS]

  because there are places in the game [TS]

  especially when you're going through the [TS]

  mechanicals where again if you're if [TS]

  you're level first-person shooter [TS]

  awareness is not good you could get [TS]

  yourself turned around I quite [TS]

  understand especially since uh since the [TS]

  Gladys is going you're not even going [TS]

  the right way like all the time [TS]

  yeah i can imagine people believing that [TS]

  began to get lost in that type of thing [TS]

  and you've got the you know the arrows [TS]

  pointing you towards the to continue the [TS]

  game i want to talk about some of the [TS]

  other characters in the game and this [TS]

  may not be what you expect me to say but [TS]

  I maybe we can talk about the turrets [TS]

  yeah because they are just won the [TS]

  Turner care gasps I don't hate you can [TS]

  keep and I'm delightful because they [TS]

  talk and they say very strange things [TS]

  and when you when you are going to shoot [TS]

  you so you have to do bad things to them [TS]

  and then it's very sad because they yelp [TS]

  and they say sad things facebook weekend [TS]

  I love that I love that the turrets and [TS]

  they look you know interesting and [TS]

  almost you know like a more like a [TS]

  person than a or or a person robot I [TS]

  love coming across that the special ones [TS]

  and especially in portal to where they [TS]

  have like the end the ones in the den [TS]

  that sing the little song here he did [TS]

  you come across that one [TS]

  the background you hear this music and [TS]

  you're like what is that and you like go [TS]

  through and you find one of the rat dens [TS]

  and you're in there and then all of a [TS]

  sudden you find this area where there's [TS]

  three or four of them just singing a [TS]

  little song to themselves like in this [TS]

  little warehouse and it's adorable and [TS]

  then the one that you find on the [TS]

  platform right that like tells you all [TS]

  kinds of a life-affirming slightly [TS]

  religious jargon because you saved it [TS]

  from being incinerated you Robin you [TS]

  don't talking about I do from looking [TS]

  screaming vocals for keeping the merge [TS]

  to me he was cast into the balance of [TS]

  here and pick things that affected the [TS]

  defective ones are add more than the [TS]

  regular one yeah it's like I different [TS]

  save me o beautiful one I feel really [TS]

  bad for the Franken the Franken cubes [TS]

  that are the turrets the get go to [TS]

  solution and they're all messed up and [TS]

  like it's got to stick their little legs [TS]

  i try to square the trial on the ground [TS]

  until you can almost they tuck their [TS]

  legs and the cubes the robot that turns [TS]

  the turn into cubes horrible idea [TS]

  it's a phone oh right right off the bat [TS]

  and on the very first the very first [TS]

  level of portal one they try to give the [TS]

  giant whatever the Aperture Science [TS]

  whatever giant red button they try to [TS]

  give that like a personality which [TS]

  obviously the buttons don't have a [TS]

  person I by giving by giving ridiculous [TS]

  aperture science names each one of these [TS]

  things you start to get a picture what [TS]

  this company is like they're not just [TS]

  about shower curtains anymore they do [TS]

  all sorts of things science so you have [TS]

  the original script portal 2 was going [TS]

  to have you and rich it ends up being [TS]

  very much Wheatley whatley how to [TS]

  pronounce weaving really yeah weekly so [TS]

  it was like you spend a lifetime with [TS]

  weekly but the original version of it [TS]

  was going to have different levels with [TS]

  like the the space fear and the radius [TS]

  fear was the third one [TS]

  of skewed and and it's undercutting sort [TS]

  of what we expect but it also is what we [TS]

  expect portal and they did that great [TS]

  thing of building that familiarity by [TS]

  having you play the first couple [TS]

  Taylor's from portal again except now [TS]

  they're all your message i did an [TS]

  overgrown and probably they do like [TS]

  three flips because you start the game [TS]

  and you're like wow okay because glass [TS]

  in this game or not because i got this [TS]

  court thing and hit the you know [TS]

  Wheatley is has enough personality can [TS]

  be like I wouldn't be offended by [TS]

  playing a game with we have here is my [TS]

  domain because he's charismatic in a [TS]

  different way we are none of that's 192 [TS]

  twist of like all glad she's still here [TS]

  big surprise but anyway she is that's [TS]

  number two and number three is all you [TS]

  another game where you just you versus [TS]

  glass actually this whole thing you know [TS]

  and then you fall down the big shaft and [TS]

  then there's the cave johnson and it all [TS]

  comes together so they they they kind of [TS]

  do it [TS]

  I don't say do it too many times but [TS]

  they do I think just enough twists where [TS]

  it's kind of like two three or four [TS]

  games in one and each one gives you a [TS]

  different look just when you think [TS]

  you're getting a little bit tired [TS]

  alright so I'm just gonna go through a [TS]

  series of levels Julio Gladys back or [TS]

  item I just going to go through a series [TS]

  of levels are no actually I'm not and [TS]

  that cave johnson has its own [TS]

  progression and then it all comes [TS]

  together in the end it so it's a [TS]

  surprisingly rich structure for what is [TS]

  not very long games only long compared [TS]

  to portal 2 but you can get through to [TS]

  get part of one rather they find a lot [TS]

  of ways to reinvent that formula right i [TS]

  love that I love the cave johnson [TS]

  section for lots of reasons I love that [TS]

  it's such a change in terms of the [TS]

  palette and the and the set design and [TS]

  everything and we've got and and the the [TS]

  cut the loading screens change so that [TS]

  you know you end up with the history of [TS]

  logos of aperture science through [TS]

  history through the decades which is [TS]

  fantastic got seventies aperture science [TS]

  logo is a thing of beauty and horror but [TS]

  beauty and then we get the story cave [TS]

  johnson played wonderfully by JK Simmons [TS]

  and I really enjoy hearing his and [TS]

  stretch it strains credulity a little [TS]

  bit that it's like guess we'll take this [TS]

  recording when he will occasionally have [TS]

  a side and mark them at people [TS]

  we'll just load that one in that part [TS]

  we're not going to edit it or anything [TS]

  you're not part of the control group by [TS]

  the way you get the jail last four [TS]

  son-of-a-gun got blue paint all joking [TS]

  in his legs tragic but informative or so [TS]

  really enjoyable as my favorite part of [TS]

  can find like some exploding lemons to [TS]

  behind and keep their my desk like that [TS]

  interested enough in the game to like [TS]

  look at every little thing is not too [TS]

  many things to look at right so you see [TS]

  the science fair you see the potato you [TS]

  see the names and stuff like that and [TS]

  just through sort of the emotional arc [TS]

  or not so much the like the little [TS]

  little hints they give you but just the [TS]

  emotional are being made it very clear [TS]

  to me what the relationship between [TS]

  Caroline GLaDOS and she'll was at least [TS]

  as far as I was concerned and then I was [TS]

  just looking up to see if the end the [TS]

  actual evidence on the wiki pages and [TS]

  all the fan sites confirmed what I would [TS]

  I in my heart believe to be true with a [TS]

  connection between them and neither did [TS]

  didn't it either agree with it or the [TS]

  very least didn't disapprove it so I [TS]

  definitely have my headcanon for this [TS]

  game and I think that cameras probably [TS]

  pretty coat close to what the real [TS]

  Canada's you know I just like i like the [TS]

  realization and and the best part of it [TS]

  is that i love that that all happens [TS]

  while GLaDOS is with you stuck to a [TS]

  potato field because she's like not [TS]

  unite oh my god i figured out the origin [TS]

  of GLaDOS it's like no she's right there [TS]

  going like home that sounds familiar [TS]

  I don't know and that adds a whole other [TS]

  layer to it that she the potato Gladys's [TS]

  is you know stuck on your on your portal [TS]

  gun while you're learning her origin [TS]

  story that's and it's retroactive [TS]

  continuity like the line i said at the [TS]

  opening of the show I chose it because [TS]

  that's a line from portal one but it [TS]

  makes it clear as far back at portal one [TS]

  that there is an emotional relationship [TS]

  between Chell and GLaDOS which doesn't [TS]

  make sense in the context of the part of [TS]

  one universe because you don't have any [TS]

  of the backstory but once we heard it [TS]

  important to sort of in in perhaps you [TS]

  know fun coincidental retroactive [TS]

  continuity you're like oh that the stuff [TS]

  she said in part 1 Tony's makes sense [TS]

  because why would [TS]

  why would shall be breaking glados's [TS]

  heart by defeating her like there's [TS]

  obviously a relationship between these [TS]

  two personalities or entities and by the [TS]

  end of portal 2 there is you know [TS]

  there's a present relationship in the [TS]

  past relationship is revealed and it all [TS]

  starts to make sense and you know the [TS]

  beautiful ending of portal 2 that will [TS]

  get to just sort of nails at all home & [TS]

  wraps the series thus far up into a nice [TS]

  little bow have you did you see the did [TS]

  anyone find the secret [TS]

  portrait of a cave and Carolyn together [TS]

  I don't know where that is i had i [TS]

  hadn't come across that I knew about it [TS]

  from reading about the game but not i [TS]

  didn't find it in real life so it turns [TS]

  there's like a door that you can you can [TS]

  open from up on a box or something but [TS]

  because i did see that there's more [TS]

  dialogue there [TS]

  I like also kind of all the little jokes [TS]

  along the way about I mean after having [TS]

  played all the half-life games with with [TS]

  you know spending how many hours [TS]

  exploring all the like a sprawling Black [TS]

  Mesa kind of bland corporate complexes [TS]

  it slick but all the like repeated [TS]

  little jokes about how aperture sciences [TS]

  you know basically black mesas you know [TS]

  little runner-up secondly one out of [TS]

  like how do you know him with black mesa [TS]

  yep that's all their other plaques and [TS]

  you know and they're just it's they have [TS]

  so much more character to them compared [TS]

  and insanely funny and I just I always [TS]

  liked I always enjoyed Stephen Merchant [TS]

  so to have him be a character and having [TS]

  me this bumbling helpful but not very [TS]

  helpful turned you know turn to the [TS]

  villain of the story for awhile bumbling [TS]

  still but villain [TS]

  i I just I that infused so much humor [TS]

  into into the whole story and I just I [TS]

  thought it was a great bit of casting [TS]

  and when we were talking a couple [TS]

  episodes ago I think we mentioned I i [TS]

  think it was maybe even the last episode [TS]

  we mentioned destiny and that wizard [TS]

  came from the moon and things like that [TS]

  i just i want to appreciate a really [TS]

  nice bit of casting that having stephen [TS]

  merchant is weakly I really enjoyed him [TS]

  alway always one hour then I'll come [TS]

  back and assuming like to locate your [TS]

  dead body for burial [TS]

  alright brilliant go team see you in an [TS]

  hour hopefully if you're not dead [TS]

  I thought he was really into playing and [TS]

  I hate him he is intentionally annoying [TS]

  right i found out of sight right but but [TS]

  but then you see him breaking down but [TS]

  he's entertaining don't you think [TS]

  oh yeah I thought I guess what I'm [TS]

  saying is my my gut reaction to him like [TS]

  good performances are nuanced and you [TS]

  can you can watch them again and [TS]

  understand subtleties my got reaction to [TS]

  Wheatley was black she felt like you [TS]

  just seemed really annoying and then [TS]

  like as you go through the game and you [TS]

  like learn about his psychology and how [TS]

  like you know it feels like he can never [TS]

  you know get beyond this one single task [TS]

  and then you see him [TS]

  fail and like have a very human response [TS]

  to not being able to live up to a job [TS]

  and you see him breaking apart and this [TS]

  darkness like come over him i thought [TS]

  it's just a wonderful performance was [TS]

  not your bullet-riddled building for my [TS]

  other room he wouldn't know there's the [TS]

  crop targets were like yeah well no [TS]

  matter because I'm still holding all the [TS]

  cards I guess what they're all full [TS]

  houses never actually played cards [TS]

  meaning to learn [TS]

  I mean he's meant to be i mean that [TS]

  character is meant to be bumbling an [TS]

  annoying at the beginning so that it has [TS]

  a bit has a place to go and it and it [TS]

  does it but i do love I do love that [TS]

  character of my ego big dreams that they [TS]

  cannot live up to who [TS]

  that's right that's a nice higher i like [TS]

  the idea but also that he like they do [TS]

  again I they get away with a lot of [TS]

  twists in this thing because in it like [TS]

  but they don't do the the easy way which [TS]

  is have someone who's with you in the [TS]

  beginning who you later find out the [TS]

  entire time was plotting to be the bad [TS]

  guy and as it turns out the bad guys [TS]

  actually the good guy that is not what [TS]

  happens in Portal 2 he didn't intend to [TS]

  be a good guy [TS]

  it's just that when he got into that [TS]

  chassis it's like a all this power [TS]

  yeah and I'm very smart now so that was [TS]

  not his plan from the beginning and the [TS]

  good guys like oh actually Gladys is my [TS]

  friend or whatever [TS]

  no not really you know when she gets [TS]

  back in that thing like that that's what [TS]

  makes the ending point because you know [TS]

  Caroline deleted right you you think you [TS]

  think you know what's up with these AIS [TS]

  but you don't because glad us is it's [TS]

  never gonna be your super duper friend [TS]

  and Wheatley really was trying to be a [TS]

  good guy but just you you put them into [TS]

  that robotic frame and give him all this [TS]

  information and just things things go [TS]

  wrong so how it's gonna corrupt yeah and [TS]

  and it's it's a greater those few turns [TS]

  again and like I like a two-hour game [TS]

  they do those terms you normally get [TS]

  those number of turns like a you know [TS]

  hundred our final fantasy that game they [TS]

  cram them into two hours it's just a [TS]

  fairly good density of interesting and [TS]

  somewhat unexpected plot twists all [TS]

  which feel honest and sort of human [TS]

  which is weird to say when you think I [TS]

  I but can somebody make me a t-shirt [TS]

  that says Gladys is never going to be [TS]

  your super duper fresh and expansion [TS]

  that that's a title that is what she may [TS]

  not kill you would be like you're not [TS]

  going to the house [TS]

  let's not let's talk about we've been [TS]

  talking a lot about upside and we should [TS]

  talk about what the WHA RR maybe our [TS]

  criticisms and negative feelings about [TS]

  about portal are Breanna you wanna jump [TS]

  in [TS]

  yeah yeah I mean look this game is a [TS]

  masterpiece if I our call correctly I [TS]

  think it got a 10 back on gamespot when [TS]

  it came out I may be remembering their [TS]

  room but we we all agreed that this game [TS]

  is a masterpiece [TS]

  so yeah this is this is just nitpicking [TS]

  um I think portal two is a much stronger [TS]

  game from a narrative point of view I [TS]

  think mechanically portal two is a [TS]

  weaker game than portal 1 i'm a portal 1 [TS]

  the mechanics of it basically came from [TS]

  an indie game that you know valve saw [TS]

  they saw the potential in it and you [TS]

  know basically bought it and turn it [TS]

  into part of the orange box and [TS]

  basically expanded the idea and if you [TS]

  look at portal to the new gel mechanic [TS]

  is something very similar to that the [TS]

  day they saw on in the game and they [TS]

  kind of took that mechanic and put it on [TS]

  there you have to say I thought those [TS]

  puzzles are fun i enjoyed portal to but [TS]

  I felt like that particularly did not [TS]

  it didn't feels organic with it [TS]

  I and I actually think the later half of [TS]

  portal 2 is actually kind of weak [TS]

  because i think most of the puzzles come [TS]

  down to this this frustration factor we [TS]

  find yourself with the portal gun and [TS]

  you're going ok what is the part of this [TS]

  room this covered in moondust paint so [TS]

  you find yourself shooting portals [TS]

  everywhere just waiting for something to [TS]

  stick very often way way way way out in [TS]

  the distance just like hoping to find [TS]

  this one little tile and it's it was to [TS]

  me was very reminiscent of this you guys [TS]

  remember in the the eighties when you [TS]

  play these are [TS]

  you adventure games that would very much [TS]

  be a pixel hunt here I to find the exact [TS]

  with the hospital i can click on that [TS]

  exactly and I i still think this was was [TS]

  well done but I feel like it was it was [TS]

  weaker let me double up on that uh one [TS]

  of the things that struck me in and i [TS]

  know this is again funny for me to say [TS]

  this is somebody who doesn't play a lot [TS]

  of games and doesn't mind that this was [TS]

  easier and i totally get the conceit of [TS]

  the fact that these are test levels so [TS]

  the whole point of them is that there's [TS]

  a solution but after a while I did find [TS]

  myself being disappointed that every [TS]

  time there's an angled wall you you drop [TS]

  through a portal on to a portal on the [TS]

  angled wall and will be flung exactly [TS]

  where you need to go and I started and I [TS]

  start to think i get i get why they [TS]

  explain why this is because these are [TS]

  test portals but it didn't it didn't [TS]

  feel organic to be in it and it felt not [TS]

  dangerous enough i like I wanted there [TS]

  to be angled walls that didn't fling me [TS]

  anywhere or flung they don't give you a [TS]

  lot of falsely right or that were three [TS]

  wide and you if you put it on the the [TS]

  left side you would be safe but on the [TS]

  right as i may be a little bit of [TS]

  alignment but that everything the main [TS]

  challenge that portal 2 has is can you [TS]

  make a longer game especially for [TS]

  players who have played portal one where [TS]

  they don't get tired of doing the same [TS]

  thing that's what gets into the tony was [TS]

  saying is like throughout the whole [TS]

  length of portal to the way they're [TS]

  trying to stave off boredom or [TS]

  repetition is by it's gradually adding [TS]

  new mechanics and when you when you [TS]

  gradually add this new mechanically [TS]

  don't remove the old one so like the [TS]

  angled walls with with you know putting [TS]

  a portal on them [TS]

  those are still there just because it [TS]

  assumes you've learned that and it's a [TS]

  given but hopefully on that level [TS]

  there's something new like something you [TS]

  know you're doing with the gel or [TS]

  something new we're doing with those [TS]

  little by little glowy walls yeah [TS]

  whatever [TS]

  I mean it's a little weird from a puzzle [TS]

  design because like in every chamber [TS]

  it's like you're going to use every kind [TS]

  of interactive part of it right you're [TS]

  going to use every angled wall and every [TS]

  laser beam and things like that there's [TS]

  no extra pieces like it on some of the [TS]

  levels though it does give you a fairly [TS]

  wide open white space and with the [TS]

  portal and you do have to be someone [TS]

  like portal 2 got better about letting [TS]

  you place portals on walls and sort of [TS]

  like [TS]

  non-integral positions such as never [TS]

  like buttons you don't need or but you [TS]

  like working together there's a there's [TS]

  a level late in Portal 2 where there's [TS]

  one angled wall and that's the one you [TS]

  have to obviously slingshot yourself [TS]

  through to get to the part on the other [TS]

  side it is exactly time for that and [TS]

  that's how it works and there's a ramp [TS]

  and it's very end there's orange gel and [TS]

  you're like well I know how this works [TS]

  and a one-level it's like great I know [TS]

  how this works i need to figure out how [TS]

  to spray the orange gel on the ramp and [TS]

  I can jump over it and the ramp is the [TS]

  ramp is not that the puzzle the ramp is [TS]

  the what you're solving for that and yet [TS]

  I I kept feeling like really every [TS]

  single item that is out of whack here [TS]

  slightly is is going to be used in the [TS]

  solution like I never had a question the [TS]

  ramp was going to be part of the [TS]

  solution the you know the egg wall was [TS]

  going to be part of the solution [TS]

  yeah but that's the type of type of game [TS]

  it doesn't mention i can see it supports [TS]

  that but like the other thing is they're [TS]

  trying not to give you a dead end it's [TS]

  like that the directive in Mariano games [TS]

  that basically like this should be there [TS]

  should be no way that you can get [TS]

  yourself into a situation where the only [TS]

  way out is to restart the level you're [TS]

  going to die and i get that when you [TS]

  someplace in order to or I did actually [TS]

  that did actually happen and what that [TS]

  but that's what they're trying to [TS]

  prevent by sort of the conservation of [TS]

  items or something that is like never [TS]

  let the person get into a situation [TS]

  where they can't finish level either by [TS]

  activating something like and now you [TS]

  can't take it back or now you have no [TS]

  way to wash off your gel or anything [TS]

  like that that's part of just you know [TS]

  good puzzle designed for to avoiding [TS]

  frustration sort of the modern age of [TS]

  gaming hell didn't carry a screw you get [TS]

  stuck start the ballgame over and I like [TS]

  I'd like an extra angled wall or two so [TS]

  i have to actually look and think that [TS]

  which one of these is going to point me [TS]

  in a place i want to go but I literally [TS]

  I didn't have to do that because I knew [TS]

  it would put me somewhere there are [TS]

  weaker levels and stronger level i got [TS]

  some of the levels where you just kind [TS]

  of passing through sort of like an [TS]

  atrium where there is kind of a minor [TS]

  puzzle to make progress really the thing [TS]

  that's happening there is like some long [TS]

  voiceover and like not it's not like [TS]

  test chambers because once you get into [TS]

  the cave johnson part it's not like [TS]

  you're in for one chamber that the test [TS]

  chamber is easier to layout and [TS]

  satisfying puzzle in this sort of [TS]

  traveling through the underground [TS]

  sometimes you just traveling through and [TS]

  sometimes it's you know all right well [TS]

  there's some minor possible to have to [TS]

  do to move on to the next thing but this [TS]

  is not a chamber [TS]

  and like especially those parts with the [TS]

  put the gel is flowing everywhere i'm [TS]

  not entirely sure of this but i'm pretty [TS]

  sure the very first time I place which [TS]

  was a long time ago i saw some of those [TS]

  puzzles and sort of the the non the [TS]

  non-standard way often making it harder [TS]

  for myself and the actual solution is [TS]

  but there are multiple ways to solve [TS]

  levels because once you have the gel and [TS]

  you can spray everywhere you can solve [TS]

  them in ways that don't involve for [TS]

  example the one random angle wall [TS]

  hanging out there because you can pull [TS]

  these gels over here and we went out put [TS]

  the whole room yeah riots want to paint [TS]

  those rooms the gels change the formula [TS]

  for a little bit in a way that I think [TS]

  some people might feel weird about [TS]

  because I think a lot of the really good [TS]

  portal puzzles like figuring out the [TS]

  solution and implementing it like [TS]

  there's not a big gap there right like [TS]

  implementing it is pretty easy and it's [TS]

  not relying on on timing [TS]

  whereas with the gel ones it's like the [TS]

  solution is not obvious i'm just going [TS]

  to start kind of throwing stuff at the [TS]

  wall by spraying jello everywhere and [TS]

  stumble across but there's more than one [TS]

  solution like it if I do see what the [TS]

  solution is it's like well now i'm going [TS]

  to you know put gel everywhere and put [TS]

  paint everywhere for a while [TS]

  whereas other places it's a little bit [TS]

  more kind of like rapid to kind of get [TS]

  from solution to implemented solution [TS]

  what would have the observing scientist [TS]

  was that if you were actual test subject [TS]

  in those chambers just flinging paint [TS]

  everywhere like a lunatic [TS]

  you know the only times you've got a [TS]

  little easy with sticks ya talking with [TS]

  water after it's what they use human [TS]

  test subjects now and not and not the [TS]

  Apes that they previously used I have to [TS]

  say I was a little disappointed in [TS]

  Portal 2 in terms of the level of [TS]

  challenge right i mean i never really [TS]

  felt really stuck or challenge and I [TS]

  think they they do a good job with kind [TS]

  of the co-op part of portal 2 is I think [TS]

  a lot more challenging because the [TS]

  complexity is increased because now you [TS]

  have two characters [TS]

  have two characters [TS]

  and you can have your puzzles that [TS]

  require for portals and lots of timing [TS]

  and things like that but it's this kind [TS]

  of tacked on like there is kind of a [TS]

  story to the coop but it's not the same [TS]

  you know engaging interesting story that [TS]

  you have for the campaign so I'm [TS]

  guessing there's probably a lot of [TS]

  people that play Portal 2 and I've never [TS]

  played the co-op part of portal and you [TS]

  know you're not missing out on a lot in [TS]

  terms of story but you are missing out [TS]

  on some interesting challenges far as [TS]

  the puzzles go there are videos of [TS]

  people solving all the different rooms [TS]

  in portal to an extremely exotic ways [TS]

  either by for example not using items [TS]

  that seem to be necessary but really [TS]

  aren't or using momentum in ways sort of [TS]

  not intended by the game designer and [TS]

  that is sort of the metagame within [TS]

  portal and portal two especially once a [TS]

  jealous come in because you can solve [TS]

  level without without doing the [TS]

  prescribed things involving very [TS]

  difficult first person moves like [TS]

  throwing cubes through things and [TS]

  flinging yourself through a series of [TS]

  portals and there is that extra level of [TS]

  the game is just that that isn't [TS]

  required like you can do it the easy way [TS]

  and it works [TS]

  the only reason you're doing it the hard [TS]

  way to make it harder for yourself I [TS]

  mean portal and portal two are crazy for [TS]

  people who do speedruns but that's like [TS]

  that's not kind of the game that's there [TS]

  that's a game you can play with portal 2 [TS]

  but that's not the game as intended [TS]

  I i think that co-op mode of portal 2 is [TS]

  is well done for what it is but I think [TS]

  it I think it really betrays the the [TS]

  spirit of portal and I I think you have [TS]

  to really look at that era of gaming [TS]

  when portal two came out and kind of get [TS]

  put into some historic context yet this [TS]

  is a time where I in order to combat [TS]

  used game sales a electronic arts had [TS]

  started Institute five dollar fee to [TS]

  access multiplayer too kind recruit [TS]

  these fees and you know a lot of games [TS]

  had had a multiplayer mode kind of [TS]

  tacked on in order to you know like oh [TS]

  no don't take my game back don't sell it [TS]

  like keep me I promise there's gonna be [TS]

  content coming which be a portal to [TS]

  follow it up with um I know you Jason I [TS]

  have to push back and disagree with you [TS]

  a bit on the difficulty level just [TS]

  because i know so many people whose kind [TS]

  of gateway drug into gaming was portal [TS]

  and um i would actually i think it was [TS]

  pretty [TS]

  just the perfect difficulty I really [TS]

  create concedes yeah I feel like at the [TS]

  end of portal to having it be a little [TS]

  bit more or less of a converse a a [TS]

  conservation of features in a room that [TS]

  you have to think about it a little more [TS]

  is probably not [TS]

  upping the difficulty too much at that [TS]

  point because it felt I I felt kind of [TS]

  seeing me [TS]

  believe me i think i can't believe i'm [TS]

  making this argument because i love your [TS]

  level of difficulty portal but what is [TS]

  there for me it was like this again a [TS]

  few times right guy all the way to the [TS]

  end like it should be getting harder [TS]

  here shouldn't have to guess about [TS]

  whether this is the right thing to jump [TS]

  through but it says I don't just jump [TS]

  it'll take you somewhere good and it [TS]

  would share and that's fine [TS]

  like I don't agree but that's er that's [TS]

  fine but but where it feels in Congress [TS]

  to me is with portal to co-op which my [TS]

  husband and I called divorce method [TS]

  because it's it is so unbelievably like [TS]

  portal is a game it's one of these rare [TS]

  games i really look for with for Frank [TS]

  who isn't up late let's destroy [TS]

  everything like BB i got captain toad [TS]

  Frank and I need to hang out more [TS]

  I think Franklin and wait going oh my [TS]

  god just 14 watch watch some Star Trek [TS]

  will play some gentle cases multiple [TS]

  yeah yeah but it's the difficulty spike [TS]

  is so high where it's really a game that [TS]

  only expert players can get through [TS]

  because like you're not just dealing [TS]

  with like suddenly have four portals and [TS]

  you're trying to communicate with people [TS]

  across an internet connection and there [TS]

  are many more speed puzzles and I just I [TS]

  i think that it's a great game for what [TS]

  it is but I think it lacks the [TS]

  accessibility that makes portals such a [TS]

  beautiful perfect example of game decide [TS]

  yet think it really could betrays that [TS]

  casual audience and I think it's sad [TS]

  that there's an entire layer of portal [TS]

  that you know a lot of the audience is [TS]

  just simply never going to get to [TS]

  explore and I I think you can look at [TS]

  some examples of game design like the [TS]

  last lara croft in the temple of Osiris [TS]

  this is a game that [TS]

  you know how they got a lot of press but [TS]

  it is a really really good example of [TS]

  multiplayer where the puzzles change for [TS]

  one two or three players and because of [TS]

  that it's accessible to players of [TS]

  with different people they didn't think [TS]

  it was like an add on to the second the [TS]

  multiplayer that got released at some [TS]

  point I played that with a different [TS]

  person that I played the first part you [TS]

  know in the ideal experience like it's a [TS]

  good collaboration and i'm really into [TS]

  puzzles and work on a lot of puzzles you [TS]

  know they're not video game-related it's [TS]

  fun to work with somebody else but it's [TS]

  fun when it's a collaboration and when [TS]

  people go back and forth and you know [TS]

  somebody's able to contribute something [TS]

  and somebody else is able to you know [TS]

  build on top of that but I mean I played [TS]

  lots of collaborative games you know [TS]

  that have not gone well I'll never [TS]

  forget a particularly bad experience [TS]

  where I was playing a game of [TS]

  Neverwinter and like I got lost and I [TS]

  showed up at the big boss fight and like [TS]

  the big boss was dead and my friend had [TS]

  like already opened a portal back to [TS]

  town and like it is like so i just [TS]

  showed up at the murder scene and all [TS]

  the loot is God and it's like I don't [TS]

  know what I'm doing so you know but [TS]

  that's more about the you know who [TS]

  you're playing with and how that's kind [TS]

  of facilitated than the game itself [TS]

  alright but you know its weak as far as [TS]

  you know it's the stacked on kind of [TS]

  side story right and you know there's [TS]

  you play as they too funny little robots [TS]

  and that's kind of fun and they're a [TS]

  little bit more more Gladys but the you [TS]

  know the heart is not there is a lot [TS]

  more about [TS]

  the puzzles in the mechanics of the [TS]

  puzzles which you know pales compared to [TS]

  the you know the delightful story that [TS]

  you get portal 2 but you're not invested [TS]

  in the in the two robots though like now [TS]

  they really didn't have a story and [TS]

  there is a plot point revealed the end [TS]

  of the coop thing but you're not you [TS]

  don't embody them in the way that you [TS]

  embody channel when you place even kind [TS]

  of the juke they get disassembled and [TS]

  reassembled at the beginning and end of [TS]

  every level right there like they're [TS]

  totally disposable was like a Star Trek [TS]

  transporter yeah I i completely agree [TS]

  about there's not being a lot of heart [TS]

  in it but the same time it is really [TS]

  nice to play because you're like i just [TS]

  want a little bit more portal sometimes [TS]

  you know because things are so short you [TS]

  not obsessed with portal from playing it [TS]

  and he plays minecraft he placed her [TS]

  he's good now 3d game literate and I [TS]

  think if you played portal now he would [TS]

  have no problem with it at all although [TS]

  you'd have to maybe scratches headed at [TS]

  some of the puzzles but i think i think [TS]

  he would he would enjoy it here my [TS]

  daughter tried to play the coop and they [TS]

  got like three levels and they're like a [TS]

  forget this then went to Minecraft but [TS]

  he was obsessed with portals because he [TS]

  loved the concept [TS]

  there was maybe when he was in third [TS]

  grade everyday walking him to school the [TS]

  entire conversation was about how much [TS]

  easier would be to get to school if we [TS]

  could only make a portal and we would [TS]

  talk about various ways you could use [TS]

  the portal and other places you could go [TS]

  with the portal and do you put the [TS]

  portal outside the school or do you put [TS]

  it inside if you put inside people walk [TS]

  into our house from the other side of [TS]

  the portal we had long conversations I [TS]

  will always think about portal and think [TS]

  about the fact that my son really wants [TS]

  a portal gun and unfortunately you know [TS]

  there isn't one yet maybe he'll invent [TS]

  one but we have a plan to mine moondust [TS]

  that would be the hardest part of that [TS]

  they don't need it i just know it's so [TS]

  the last the last the last boss battle [TS]

  and portal 2i i really enjoyed it but I [TS]

  i especially enjoyed the very end as the [TS]

  ceiling comes down and the moon is [TS]

  exposed and you can see outside for the [TS]

  first time and the last act you have to [TS]

  perform is to shoot a portal gun on the [TS]

  moon and and there's a delay as it goes [TS]

  before it engages i I just I thought [TS]

  that was such an awesome kind of [TS]

  thinking outside of all the scope of [TS]

  this game up to now so simple a moment [TS]

  and yet such a wonderful moment i really [TS]

  i really enjoyed that last day as a [TS]

  great example of a game on rails because [TS]

  oh yeah it shoves your viewpoint up [TS]

  it puts the thing in your face it is [TS]

  like it is in a many ways taking away [TS]

  player agency and yet it does not feel [TS]

  like the takeaway player agency because [TS]

  they have so masterfully constructing a [TS]

  game and universe to engage you that [TS]

  backwards and the ceiling comes open [TS]

  it's not it's not unreasonable for the [TS]

  moon visible because in the game they [TS]

  want to put something interesting you [TS]

  know like the same reason complex in the [TS]

  moon lander because they won't have some [TS]

  visual address right and it immediately [TS]

  cursed I've never heard of someone [TS]

  getting up to that point and not knowing [TS]

  what to do like and it feels like it [TS]

  feels like it occurred to you as our and [TS]

  isn't the game clever like you feel [TS]

  satisfaction of having solved someone [TS]

  reality what happens they shoved your [TS]

  cursor onto the moon right like and they [TS]

  give you no other [TS]

  options like it is it is such a [TS]

  subversion of taking away player agency [TS]

  while the same time making the player [TS]

  feel like they figured it out and it is [TS]

  a clever idea and it is done in a nice [TS]

  little animation in some ways I do feel [TS]

  like it's a little bit of a cheap we're [TS]

  strings you're like boy that really just [TS]

  you know rubbing my nose in it but the [TS]

  first time I played I just felt like [TS]

  this game is real and its story payoff [TS]

  game is about making you feel clever or [TS]

  you have to do that to do the earlier [TS]

  other portal isn't already said at the [TS]

  time you're pointed at the moon so you [TS]
