3: A Bra Phase

00:00:00   did you guys ever go through a bra phase [TS]

00:00:04   know and I please don't tell me you did [TS]

00:00:07   this is all I did I don't know when we [TS]

00:00:10   start these are we are talking about [TS]

00:00:12   cars yes the way anyways equally and [TS]

00:00:16   better maybe the car one is worse i [TS]

00:00:18   would agree with so an episode 1i I told [TS]

00:00:21   you how when I i bought a $YEAR honda [TS]

00:00:23   accord it was my first brand-new car [TS]

00:00:25   that ever bought and the car is so [TS]

00:00:29   before that I had spent some time with a [TS]

00:00:31   maxima and and before that my sister's [TS]

00:00:35   borrowed corolla and in both cases [TS]

00:00:38   especially the corolla I did a lot of [TS]

00:00:40   highway driving and the the hood we just [TS]

00:00:43   get so chipped the paint on the hook [TS]

00:00:47   just get so chipped on that front edge [TS]

00:00:49   just from various like tiny rocks that i [TS]

00:00:52   wouldn't even notice while driving but [TS]

00:00:54   it was it was just spotted so I'm wear [TS]

00:00:58   with your driving this car just on [TS]

00:01:00   highways but you know in Pennsylvania [TS]

00:01:01   where that you know where winter exists [TS]

00:01:03   so it in you know that they were the [TS]

00:01:06   maximum wasn't as about the corolla [TS]

00:01:07   either it was a 98 corolla I don't know [TS]

00:01:10   if it was something about the design of [TS]

00:01:11   the aerodynamics or something or if it's [TS]

00:01:14   just the paint was especially bad or or [TS]

00:01:16   fragile i don't really know but just [TS]

00:01:18   tons and tons of speckle marks on the [TS]

00:01:21   hood [TS]

00:01:22   remember the paint chipped away from [TS]

00:01:23   from minor road debris and and so when I [TS]

00:01:28   bought my my accord i thought you know i [TS]

00:01:31   want i want this thing to be pristine [TS]

00:01:32   and you know it everyone does is like [TS]

00:01:34   buying the you know the undercoating [TS]

00:01:36   protection or you know whatever scamming [TS]

00:01:37   come up with you everywhere definitely [TS]

00:01:40   do this but you can continue well you [TS]

00:01:42   know people it's the it's the reason why [TS]

00:01:43   extended warranties sell so well and why [TS]

00:01:45   people occasionally are convinced retail [TS]

00:01:48   buy gold plate you have an analogy that [TS]

00:01:50   I think is applicable but you're [TS]

00:01:51   finished okay well so here I i just [TS]

00:01:54   bought this my first new car and I [TS]

00:01:57   wanted to protect and I wanted to stay [TS]

00:01:59   perfect as long as possible and i was so [TS]

00:02:00   paranoid about speckling up the hood [TS]

00:02:03   from from road debris that I i purchased [TS]

00:02:06   a car bra and and not even just like [TS]

00:02:10   just the part that goes on the hood [TS]

00:02:12   little like [TS]

00:02:13   little tiny rectangle know the whole [TS]

00:02:15   front like you know hood and then all [TS]

00:02:17   the way around the headlights and around [TS]

00:02:19   the whole lower you know bumper thing [TS]

00:02:21   and oh my god and I kept it is the [TS]

00:02:24   problem with this I kept it on there and [TS]

00:02:27   it was a black car with a black bra so [TS]

00:02:29   it didn't look as bad as it could have [TS]

00:02:31   but the main problem with with the car [TS]

00:02:35   bra is that dirt and stuff can get under [TS]

00:02:39   it and I knew this and fortunately that [TS]

00:02:43   didn't end up being a problem but you [TS]

00:02:44   know if if dirt gets under it then the [TS]

00:02:47   bronze like scraping all that dirt [TS]

00:02:48   around like holding it against your page [TS]

00:02:50   and it actually makes way worse damage [TS]

00:02:52   if you don't take care of it if you [TS]

00:02:53   don't you take it off clean and [TS]

00:02:55   everything but I was in an apartment [TS]

00:02:56   building with street parking there was [TS]

00:02:58   no garage me to take you know take all [TS]

00:03:00   this car maintenance in like they're [TS]

00:03:01   there was nowhere for me to easily take [TS]

00:03:05   it off wash it let it dry and put it [TS]

00:03:07   back on so i just never did so I left it [TS]

00:03:10   on there for like six months [TS]

00:03:11   eventually i get i got so paranoid about [TS]

00:03:14   dirt being trapped under that I just [TS]

00:03:15   took it off and it just never put it [TS]

00:03:16   back on and i sold it dirty somebody [TS]

00:03:19   else somebody anybody eight and that [TS]

00:03:22   ended in my car brought face I know it's [TS]

00:03:24   a boring story but it was just this this [TS]

00:03:26   momentary lapse in judgment [TS]

00:03:28   I mean the whole car was a lapse in [TS]

00:03:30   judgment to some degree but so so you [TS]

00:03:32   guys did not have it where you were [TS]

00:03:34   never tempted to protect the front of [TS]

00:03:36   your car with a bra well let me let me [TS]

00:03:38   jump in real quick and answer this by [TS]

00:03:40   asking John would you like to look for [TS]

00:03:42   new co-host with me [TS]

00:03:44   yeah he was a Windows user to do you [TS]

00:03:47   know that at this address is on there [TS]

00:03:49   are so many yeah well I don't know how I [TS]

00:03:51   associate with both of them but this is [TS]

00:03:53   both there's a dark past marcos dark [TS]

00:03:56   past we're gonna we're gonna put this [TS]

00:03:57   like windows was my number one but now [TS]

00:03:58   the car bras like is a rising up the [TS]

00:04:01   chart it was it was a little rough so [TS]

00:04:03   here's my analogy for the car bra right [TS]

00:04:05   i liken it to the screen protector [TS]

00:04:09   things you can buy for iOS devices [TS]

00:04:11   little clearer things that you put us [TS]

00:04:13   back on the front really not just the [TS]

00:04:14   screen but also the way ever see those [TS]

00:04:16   clear things that stick onto the back or [TS]

00:04:18   whatever [TS]

00:04:19   yeah I briefly used one on the iphone 4i [TS]

00:04:21   yeah it's all tense and it gets worse [TS]

00:04:23   the way workers like the the motivation [TS]

00:04:27   for these things like if you think about [TS]

00:04:28   if you think it through [TS]

00:04:29   you can usually talk about it before you [TS]

00:04:31   do it so the motivation is I don't want [TS]

00:04:33   my car to look ugly it's mostly an [TS]

00:04:35   aesthetically you don't want the stone [TS]

00:04:36   chips on your car whatever are on your [TS]

00:04:38   iOS device you don't want scratches [TS]

00:04:39   right to sell put this thing on and that [TS]

00:04:42   will protect the the paint on my car the [TS]

00:04:46   screen on my thing that the back on my [TS]

00:04:47   iphone or ipad and that way it won't get [TS]

00:04:51   damaged but all those things you put on [TS]

00:04:54   your car make it ugly so to prevent your [TS]

00:04:58   thing from your iPad or iPhone a car [TS]

00:05:01   from being ugly you intentionally make [TS]

00:05:03   it ugly you can kind of think okay I'm [TS]

00:05:05   intentionally making ugly but underneath [TS]

00:05:08   that ugliness I sleep better knowing [TS]

00:05:10   that there's a clean pristine paint [TS]

00:05:12   surface or whatever but that's not even [TS]

00:05:14   true as Marco pointed out that's not [TS]

00:05:16   even sure we do that anyway because it [TS]

00:05:18   you get dirt under there and even if you [TS]

00:05:20   clean it for carbon specifically even if [TS]

00:05:22   you clean out the grit and actually you [TS]

00:05:23   do preserve it actually is pristine [TS]

00:05:25   anything UV will eventually change the [TS]

00:05:27   color of the rank on the rest of the car [TS]

00:05:29   but not that part of the course when you [TS]

00:05:30   take it off you would literally have a [TS]

00:05:32   bra [TS]

00:05:33   tan line and then maybe that's not a bad [TS]

00:05:34   these days they used to be so basically [TS]

00:05:36   to try it in your your well-intentioned [TS]

00:05:40   effort to make your car not be ugly you [TS]

00:05:42   are intentionally doing yourself from [TS]

00:05:44   day one having a hideously ugly and [TS]

00:05:46   embarrassingly you know strange-looking [TS]

00:05:49   car so just say no to car bras people [TS]

00:05:51   well and ND it and the really sad part [TS]

00:05:53   is that when that car was nine months [TS]

00:05:55   old somebody back into the door and I [TS]

00:05:57   it's outdoor bra you have wrecked your [TS]

00:06:01   door from that yeah and for the iOS [TS]

00:06:03   things you know those clear films they [TS]

00:06:05   just they get much more scratched up and [TS]

00:06:06   ugly and disgusting than the glass would [TS]

00:06:08   so you're better off just you know what [TS]

00:06:10   you know why immediately give yourself [TS]

00:06:12   an ugly thing why not use it so look [TS]

00:06:14   where it looks the best and if you [TS]

00:06:16   happen to scratch so be at least you got [TS]

00:06:17   to use it in this pristine beautiful [TS]

00:06:18   save up until then instead of just [TS]

00:06:20   immediately getting it and sticking [TS]

00:06:21   something on making a gross [TS]

00:06:24   well I do have a moment of fu and i'm [TS]

00:06:27   very excited that I can be the one to [TS]

00:06:28   say that and I'm opening up the [TS]

00:06:30   floodgates by doing some fu because i [TS]

00:06:32   know john is way did you know that [TS]

00:06:34   you've gotten my agreement my license [TS]

00:06:35   agreement for doing follow-up on a [TS]

00:06:37   podcast no lawyers get in touch with you [TS]

00:06:39   about that [TS]

00:06:40   oh yeah yeah I'm sure we can work [TS]

00:06:42   something out my term hungry equitable [TS]

00:06:43   it's a very reasonable [TS]

00:06:46   what is this strand yeah so I have some [TS]

00:06:48   lag behind not follow up at lag behind [TS]

00:06:51   the first thing is I'm gonna try to make [TS]

00:06:53   this really quick [TS]

00:06:54   peter van broke joven if i read that [TS]

00:06:57   correctly was the first that i saw to [TS]

00:07:00   point out to us that the ford probe is a [TS]

00:07:01   monster MSC mx6 excuse me I think I was [TS]

00:07:05   on the right track to 626 and i decided [TS]

00:07:07   i was wrong but as it turns out it is [TS]

00:07:10   the mx6 wastegate vs blow off at [TS]

00:07:13   whatever you get past the toxics is [TS]

00:07:15   mechanically identical to the amex is [TS]

00:07:17   just as different skin on it so you're [TS]

00:07:19   pretty much right to thank you [TS]

00:07:20   alright i will allow that way state vs [TS]

00:07:23   blow off valve we got a lot of [TS]

00:07:24   complaining about how i didn't know what [TS]

00:07:26   i was talking about which was justified [TS]

00:07:28   a hell of a second look I saw the same [TS]

00:07:30   feedback as you you think that's a lot [TS]

00:07:31   of complaining haha [TS]

00:07:34   welcome to the internet case yeah [TS]

00:07:35   seriously i I'm new here be gentle but [TS]

00:07:38   Sojo writer i believe [TS]

00:07:41   re utr was the first person I see to let [TS]

00:07:44   us know via tweet the difference and he [TS]

00:07:48   said also blow off valve in wastegates a [TS]

00:07:49   very different things blog about [TS]

00:07:50   regulates pressure on the intake side [TS]

00:07:52   wastegate does it on the exhaust and I [TS]

00:07:54   could elaborate on that because i have [TS]

00:07:56   since done research but I want and then [TS]

00:07:59   why the super motor in the toyota biru a [TS]

00:08:02   lot of people pointed out that boxer [TS]

00:08:05   engines inherently our God configured in [TS]

00:08:09   such a way that they can sit really low [TS]

00:08:10   in the car which is part of the reason [TS]

00:08:12   why the Toyota brew handles so well yeah [TS]

00:08:14   we did we know that horizontal opposed [TS]

00:08:16   to think we said that on the show I [TS]

00:08:17   still the question remains in my mind [TS]

00:08:19   anyway what my group superb i'll be at [TS]

00:08:22   the whole point is I don't like [TS]

00:08:23   horizontally-opposed engine i don't [TS]

00:08:24   think that yes they have a lower center [TS]

00:08:26   of gravity but they don't make nice [TS]

00:08:27   noises and if they were such a great [TS]

00:08:29   idea everyone would be doing them and [TS]

00:08:31   not just subaru it's kinda like the [TS]

00:08:32   Wankel you know exactly what they have [TS]

00:08:34   many advantages the interesting [TS]

00:08:37   of the interesting characteristics of [TS]

00:08:38   the Wankel but I say my question still [TS]

00:08:41   stands it's not i would prefer to have [TS]

00:08:43   toyota's best high-revving small car [TS]

00:08:47   engine in that car in that thing instead [TS]

00:08:51   of a superpower . so i don't really care [TS]

00:08:53   the center of gravity is lower [TS]

00:08:56   yeah i agree with you but I mean it is [TS]

00:08:58   what it is so that's all the lag behind [TS]

00:09:01   not follow up that I had I don't know if [TS]

00:09:03   you guys would like to contribute or if [TS]

00:09:04   we could go ahead with marcos question I [TS]

00:09:06   can't believe we're we've become [TS]

00:09:07   follow-up show already i was trying too [TS]

00:09:09   hard to avoid the case all I didn't want [TS]

00:09:11   to do it either case against and only [TS]

00:09:14   have one thing through twitter i'm [TS]

00:09:16   talking about the four-door sports car [TS]

00:09:17   nissan maxima and I and I was saying how [TS]

00:09:21   like it how can i get away with saying [TS]

00:09:23   oh it's the four-door sports cars if [TS]

00:09:24   it's summer I cool new thing as if [TS]

00:09:25   sports sedans never existed before and I [TS]

00:09:27   mentioned the BMW 2002 someone Twitter [TS]

00:09:30   pointed up 2002 was a coupe 2-door is [TS]

00:09:32   not four doors so i will amend that to [TS]

00:09:34   from instead of a 40 s CL amended to SS [TS]

00:09:37   s SI sedan shape sports car haha because [TS]

00:09:42   it was like she doesn't look like you [TS]

00:09:44   know box in front box and back box the [TS]

00:09:46   middle but it did have two door so there [TS]

00:09:48   you go [TS]

00:09:48   we could not then now that we've done [TS]

00:09:49   that if you can call that stuff out [TS]

00:09:51   later [TS]

00:09:52   are you gonna censor yourself let me go [TS]

00:09:54   ahead and bring that [TS]

00:09:56   yeah obviously he's honest he's doing [TS]

00:10:51   personal website i assigned both of you [TS]

00:10:56   homework and I saw myself homework as [TS]

00:10:59   well and I never did homework in school [TS]

00:11:00   but at least it for this I'm curious to [TS]

00:11:03   know how did you guys first of all did [TS]

00:11:05   you do your homework I did I did under [TS]

00:11:08   protest [TS]

00:11:08   ok that's good that there's no better [TS]

00:11:11   way to do homework the assignment I gave [TS]

00:11:14   us was for each of us to come up with [TS]

00:11:17   our answer to what car available today [TS]

00:11:21   and it could be new or used but just [TS]

00:11:24   have to be generally available you know [TS]

00:11:25   these days what car year model and [TS]

00:11:29   configuration do you think is the best [TS]

00:11:31   value for general-purpose long-term [TS]

00:11:35   ownership and that the limit was let's [TS]

00:11:39   let's try to keep it under 25,000 the [TS]

00:11:41   lower the better and and or you know the [TS]

00:11:45   lower without frequent maintenance or [TS]

00:11:47   severe limitations so you know it like a [TS]

00:11:50   smart car is really cheap but it has [TS]

00:11:52   severe limitations and you know if you [TS]

00:11:55   get you can get like a 1992 nissan [TS]

00:11:59   maxima for for a pretty good price these [TS]

00:12:01   days way under 25,000 but that's [TS]

00:12:04   probably gonna require frequent [TS]

00:12:05   maintenance so you know reasonably young [TS]

00:12:08   you know not to ancient of a car so what [TS]

00:12:12   do you what do you think [TS]

00:12:13   who wants to go first Casey okay i guess [TS]

00:12:17   i would like to go first please America [TS]

00:12:18   so i have two answers and they both suck [TS]

00:12:23   because you guys are going to just [TS]

00:12:25   berate me for them but most let's now a [TS]

00:12:27   trend that we've already started so hey [TS]

00:12:29   why not continue if I had to pick just [TS]

00:12:31   1i I landed on the 2013 impress a [TS]

00:12:36   hatchback the subaru impreza hatchback [TS]

00:12:38   portion of course I did rob firstly can [TS]

00:12:41   get it why I mean it's under 25,000 in [TS]

00:12:45   fact the 1i built was twenty 2523 [TS]

00:12:48   dollars you can get it with the stick it [TS]

00:12:50   is not very quick which is definitely a [TS]

00:12:52   demerit but the reason i thought it was [TS]

00:12:54   a good deal was it's a hatchback that's [TS]

00:12:56   reasonably fun ish [TS]

00:12:59   for under 25 grand that's brand-new now [TS]

00:13:01   if i could quickly give my alternate [TS]

00:13:04   answer and then you can bring me my [TS]

00:13:06   alternate answer is basically my old [TS]

00:13:08   Subaru but in wagon form so for a couple [TS]

00:13:11   years when the 05 I think it's like a [TS]

00:13:14   five through seven or maybe 06 you could [TS]

00:13:16   get a subaru legacy gt as a wagon with a [TS]

00:13:19   five-speed and so that would be my [TS]

00:13:21   second choice and actually found one on [TS]

00:13:23   autotrader for thirteen thousand nine [TS]

00:13:25   hundred dollars for with 63,000 172 [TS]

00:13:28   miles on it and that was not well it's a [TS]

00:13:32   little bit rare but that is not white [TS]

00:13:34   and it is a wagon and I don't think I [TS]

00:13:36   would ever personally drive either of [TS]

00:13:38   these cars because it is my light and [TS]

00:13:40   well write exactly know I'd probably [TS]

00:13:43   never drive them because i don't care [TS]

00:13:44   for hatchbacks and if i was going to get [TS]

00:13:46   a wagon i would get one that was [TS]

00:13:48   probably a little bit more ridiculous [TS]

00:13:50   obnoxious or quicker but either way that [TS]

00:13:53   as an all-around her can do all things [TS]

00:13:55   for all people that's what I would pick [TS]

00:13:57   you recommend two cars that you wouldn't [TS]

00:13:58   by correcting it maybe you do like [TS]

00:14:00   horizontally-opposed engine we just get [TS]

00:14:02   through this guy down the Honorable [TS]

00:14:03   shifters and the supers and you're going [TS]

00:14:04   to get a legacy with the sticks that you [TS]

00:14:06   can actually that rubbery feeling every [TS]

00:14:08   day but i believe i said mashed potatoes [TS]

00:14:10   are excused you wouldn't through spoon [TS]

00:14:11   through mashed potatoes but yes [TS]

00:14:13   everything you just said is accurate [TS]

00:14:14   yeah my mother complained about the the [TS]

00:14:16   impreza is I mean maybe if you're [TS]

00:14:20   getting like a fancy i know that the and [TS]

00:14:23   maybe getting a fancy GTI so like 25 [TS]

00:14:25   grand for a hatchback even when it's [TS]

00:14:27   brand-new I can't [TS]

00:14:29   it may be attached back bias in the [TS]

00:14:31   European listeners are probably think [TS]

00:14:33   we're all crazy because I know [TS]

00:14:33   hatchbacks are what it's all about in [TS]

00:14:35   Europe but that is something in our [TS]

00:14:37   water here in America 25 grand for a [TS]

00:14:39   hatchback makes me go [TS]

00:14:40   yeah I don't know and I actually agree [TS]

00:14:44   with you but like I said that theory was [TS]

00:14:45   all things to all people so i could we [TS]

00:14:47   get you know this hypothetical person [TS]

00:14:48   could haul things but would still have [TS]

00:14:51   fun when they're not hauling things so [TS]

00:14:53   it fixing things that's American to you [TS]

00:14:55   that is American actually you're very [TS]

00:14:57   right hatchbacks really don't hold very [TS]

00:14:58   much like you know they they have the [TS]

00:15:00   shape of a vehicle that holds a lot and [TS]

00:15:02   and their the hatchback itself does lend [TS]

00:15:05   some versatility to to the you know the [TS]

00:15:07   size of items you can fit into the car [TS]

00:15:10   but the overall volume that you have to [TS]

00:15:12   transport things in most of the compact [TS]

00:15:14   hatchback is actually pretty small [TS]

00:15:17   yeah i would say that's true yeah i like [TS]

00:15:19   the old hatchbacks used to have more [TS]

00:15:20   remember the old integra hatchback low [TS]

00:15:22   yeah the hatchback was a different shape [TS]

00:15:24   it was more like more horizontal so you [TS]

00:15:26   could crack the hatch back open like a [TS]

00:15:28   big open pacman mouth and you can fish [TS]

00:15:30   huge stuff in there but now when the [TS]

00:15:31   back for a little bit more vertical [TS]

00:15:32   there's only so much extra room you can [TS]

00:15:34   get by having that the you know the the [TS]

00:15:36   hatch open a crack or you can spend like [TS]

00:15:38   70 grand on an audi a7 which does have [TS]

00:15:40   the old shape not that different class [TS]

00:15:42   of car [TS]

00:15:43   yes I suspect it's not attracting any of [TS]

00:15:45   the same behind it snow [TS]

00:15:47   so John what was what was your pic so my [TS]

00:15:50   protest about this thing is that the [TS]

00:15:52   question is like that's the value but it [TS]

00:15:55   doesn't go it doesn't explain what that [TS]

00:15:57   means about us i was part of the [TS]

00:15:59   question you have to decide what value [TS]

00:16:00   means for you but then you added a bunch [TS]

00:16:01   of words after that was a general [TS]

00:16:03   purpose and long-term ownership was kind [TS]

00:16:05   of trying to define value for me but you [TS]

00:16:07   still have the word value in there so I [TS]

00:16:09   didn't like the selection criteria and [TS]

00:16:11   in protest [TS]

00:16:12   I've also selected two cars that's fine [TS]

00:16:14   i think 30 so i have the actual correct [TS]

00:16:19   answer to this question as phrase just [TS]

00:16:21   to get it out of the way the actual best [TS]

00:16:24   value for general-purpose long-term [TS]

00:16:27   ownership for 25 grand is a 2013 honda [TS]

00:16:29   accord sedan sport it is the best [TS]

00:16:33   all-around car you can get having sizes [TS]

00:16:35   have never driven one and have only [TS]

00:16:36   briefly seen one but i am a very big [TS]

00:16:38   record been having onto so far and the [TS]

00:16:41   specs on this thing I just you know [TS]

00:16:43   crazily better than that President it's [TS]

00:16:46   got obviously got more room to carry [TS]

00:16:47   people you're talking about [TS]

00:16:49   general-purpose long-term ownership you [TS]

00:16:52   know a lot of people reproduce in this [TS]

00:16:54   country and that means you're gonna have [TS]

00:16:55   to find someplace to put their little [TS]

00:16:56   people and you don't want them in the [TS]

00:16:57   back of a hatchback [TS]

00:16:58   it's got all sorts of crazy amenities [TS]

00:17:00   that like I didn't think would come with [TS]

00:17:02   like that you know this is not the fancy [TS]

00:17:03   accord this is the four-cylinder 1 290 [TS]

00:17:05   horsepower which is fine but 6-speed [TS]

00:17:08   manual of course an active noise [TS]

00:17:10   cancellation and you know the the [TS]

00:17:12   touchscreen thing is is a standard you [TS]

00:17:16   know the picture for that thing a tire [TS]

00:17:18   pressure monitoring system and all these [TS]

00:17:20   things that used to be like things are [TS]

00:17:21   not trickling down to the into like [TS]

00:17:22   basically the basic chord [TS]

00:17:24   and it looks nice and it's got 18 inch [TS]

00:17:27   alloy wheels so it doesn't look like you [TS]

00:17:29   know the cheap thing with the wheel [TS]

00:17:30   covers on top of it this is it all [TS]

00:17:31   around just a really great general [TS]

00:17:34   purpose car and it comes with a [TS]

00:17:35   five-speed that will not drive you crazy [TS]

00:17:36   that these sisters these things are [TS]

00:17:38   actually nice honda makes a nice stick [TS]

00:17:40   have known as dual zone automatic [TS]

00:17:42   climate control things that I didn't [TS]

00:17:45   expect to be interesting rear-view [TS]

00:17:46   camera standard Bluetooth all the the [TS]

00:17:48   ipod connection like you're basically [TS]

00:17:50   getting a very very very very poor man's [TS]

00:17:52   BMW like it has all the amenities [TS]

00:17:54   features that you want to just massively [TS]

00:17:56   lower performance and not quite as nice [TS]

00:17:58   but it's 25 grand and this thing is [TS]

00:18:00   gonna run forever and it's you know the [TS]

00:18:04   repair across your lower much lower than [TS]

00:18:05   your BMW yes i know you get free [TS]

00:18:07   maintenance of the first whatever years [TS]

00:18:08   but so this that's the correct answer if [TS]

00:18:11   you have 25 grand you want the best [TS]

00:18:12   long-term car for value it's the current [TS]

00:18:16   generation honda accord sport you can [TS]

00:18:18   get the luxury ones this stuff too but [TS]

00:18:19   you're not getting that much more for [TS]

00:18:20   that money my second choice if you [TS]

00:18:23   define value slightly differently and I [TS]

00:18:26   think you probably should define value [TS]

00:18:28   slightly differently if for a puzzle [TS]

00:18:30   like this is find yourself a 1993 acura [TS]

00:18:36   nsx and that while I found two of them [TS]

00:18:40   for four under 25 grand just to prove [TS]

00:18:42   that I'm not like making this up and [TS]

00:18:44   saying what you can probably find 1i [TS]

00:18:45   found two of them one of them is red and [TS]

00:18:46   one of them is black [TS]

00:18:47   this car has many advantages first of [TS]

00:18:50   all since it's in a sex was probably [TS]

00:18:51   owned by somebody who took care of it [TS]

00:18:54   like it's not going to beat the hell [TS]

00:18:56   like an Indian 93 core idea people who [TS]

00:18:57   bought the sensex originally we're [TS]

00:18:59   probably gonna be nice to the car is [TS]

00:19:01   extremely reliable so it's not going to [TS]

00:19:04   be like a temperamental exotic where you [TS]

00:19:05   have to repair the thing constantly like [TS]

00:19:07   it's hot underneath there it's it's a v6 [TS]

00:19:08   engine not too powerful 270 horsepower [TS]

00:19:10   but it does run to 60 in five seconds I [TS]

00:19:13   didn't read the mileage on the court but [TS]

00:19:14   the the NSX is 19 city 24 miles per [TS]

00:19:17   gallon highway and the the cord is 2434 [TS]

00:19:19   this is an incredible mileage and what [TS]

00:19:22   are you getting for 25 grand you're [TS]

00:19:24   getting to drive basically every day and [TS]

00:19:25   you can't drive this every day and [TS]

00:19:27   exotic car people are going to turn [TS]

00:19:29   their head when you drive by and you [TS]

00:19:30   only paid 25 grand what other but what [TS]

00:19:34   other situation can you drive a [TS]

00:19:35   head-turning car the ghost engine 16 [TS]

00:19:37   five seconds for 25 grand Acura NSX is [TS]

00:19:40   the more interesting answer [TS]

00:19:42   I gotta say I was not expecting that [TS]

00:19:44   that's that's really interesting I you [TS]

00:19:46   know that I've I really don't know [TS]

00:19:47   anything about the NSS can accept that [TS]

00:19:49   everyone is obsessed with that but I [TS]

00:19:51   really don't know anything about it [TS]

00:19:52   sounds like a pretty good deal thanks [TS]

00:19:54   it's a fast car it could get good [TS]

00:19:57   mileage is reliable and it's mid-engined [TS]

00:19:58   looks exotic right that is a very good [TS]

00:20:01   pic yeah and i actually just saw one [TS]

00:20:03   recently the other day and I parked next [TS]

00:20:05   to it in the back corner of the whole [TS]

00:20:07   foods parking lot and definitely took a [TS]

00:20:09   picture of my car next to it because i [TS]

00:20:11   couldn't resist but it is a very [TS]

00:20:13   interesting pick it but it's also in [TS]

00:20:16   some regard a little bit of a boring pic [TS]

00:20:19   and hear me out for just one second i [TS]

00:20:21   would all on as as those kinds of cars [TS]

00:20:25   go the NSX is is from what I've [TS]

00:20:28   understood a very livable everyday car [TS]

00:20:30   died and i completely agree with you [TS]

00:20:31   there John but it's also i don't know [TS]

00:20:34   it's the it's a little bit boring isn't [TS]

00:20:37   it in the sense that it's not if you're [TS]

00:20:39   going to go for an exotic i went to [TS]

00:20:40   great what the world is boring out these [TS]

00:20:42   email case it yet don't email me holy [TS]

00:20:44   crap know what i mean by that is it if [TS]

00:20:47   if I was gonna go for a cheaper exotic i [TS]

00:20:50   would probably go the route of like a [TS]

00:20:52   lotus or something like that which is [TS]

00:20:54   about the same speed but probably more [TS]

00:20:57   possible in actually knew what those not [TS]

00:20:59   gonna want any 25 grand Lotus you can [TS]

00:21:01   find you're not gonna want to drive to [TS]

00:21:03   work everyday you now wait hold on and [TS]

00:21:05   the current generation you're not going [TS]

00:21:06   to the suspension is just going to talk [TS]

00:21:07   to you it's not it's you know it's a [TS]

00:21:09   tiny heart racing cars is not going to [TS]

00:21:11   be comfortable you're like this is why I [TS]

00:21:13   think of it if you plan to have a family [TS]

00:21:15   you get the cord if you are dedicated to [TS]

00:21:17   being single and are only gonna have one [TS]

00:21:18   of the person in the car you get the nsx [TS]

00:21:20   you can drive that you know until the [TS]

00:21:22   engine seizes up i do have to argue one [TS]

00:21:24   thing with you John so you paste these [TS]

00:21:26   links in and i'm looking at them and [TS]

00:21:28   both of the NSX is that you found which [TS]

00:21:30   both cost pretty much exactly $25,000 [TS]

00:21:33   both have well over a hundred thousand [TS]

00:21:35   miles on that's actually a good thing [TS]

00:21:36   because if you has another article have [TS]

00:21:38   a car driver article about how to find a [TS]

00:21:40   good used nsx and they said there's a [TS]

00:21:42   particular problem with the transmission [TS]

00:21:43   and if it's gonna go bad it's gonna go [TS]

00:21:45   bad sometime you know before 50,000 [TS]

00:21:48   miles so you want to find [TS]

00:21:49   once with high mileage because they're [TS]

00:21:50   fine okay i'm getting an advantage i [TS]

00:21:53   don't know if i could if i could spend [TS]

00:21:55   25 grand on a car with a hundred and [TS]

00:21:57   forty thousand miles on it it's a honda [TS]

00:21:59   though it's not like you're getting a [TS]

00:22:01   Ferrari with 100,000 miles and it's [TS]

00:22:03   gonna be there gonna be gentle miles [TS]

00:22:05   like it's the people who like that [TS]

00:22:06   people buy these people by nsx to drive [TS]

00:22:08   gently [TS]

00:22:09   yeah well they take care of them and you [TS]

00:22:11   know that it's I think you'll be [TS]

00:22:12   surprised like if you look at the people [TS]

00:22:14   who buy fancy Ferraris and everything [TS]

00:22:15   like that they people who buy a corolla [TS]

00:22:17   beat the hell out of that car way more [TS]

00:22:18   than people buy a Ferrari know it's [TS]

00:22:21   sitting here listening to your ear [TS]

00:22:22   I'm coming around I think you make some [TS]

00:22:24   pretty good . it is it is an interesting [TS]

00:22:25   pic but I I would [TS]

00:22:27   it's interesting pic 44 like the [TS]

00:22:29   emotional value like the like the you [TS]

00:22:33   like like when you when you choose cars [TS]

00:22:35   with your crotch rather than your brain [TS]

00:22:37   well no but i think this is what the [TS]

00:22:38   brain too because it's not you're not [TS]

00:22:40   buying like an old Ferrari that's gonna [TS]

00:22:42   just fall apart on you or like it you [TS]

00:22:43   know an old British car with the [TS]

00:22:45   electrical systems in costly failed this [TS]

00:22:46   is a comfortable reliable daily commuter [TS]

00:22:49   type car and by the way this has a 18.5 [TS]

00:22:51   gallon fuel tank that's pretty big for a [TS]

00:22:53   car that size actually I'm saying [TS]

00:22:55   mileage usual that you could cruise cost [TS]

00:22:56   cross-country in this thing you would [TS]

00:22:58   look cool the whole time you did it and [TS]

00:22:59   you'd be comfortable [TS]

00:23:00   it's got its got everything 25 grand all [TS]

00:23:02   right now that's an interesting pic I [TS]

00:23:03   can get behind this I think I spoke too [TS]

00:23:06   soon [TS]

00:23:06   this is a pretty good pick just one of [TS]

00:23:08   our you get an impressive you know what [TS]

00:23:09   one of these niggas nobody has those [TS]

00:23:14   well so I I've got a totally different [TS]

00:23:15   direction than the nsx with my pic and [TS]

00:23:18   it's going to sound very familiar my pic [TS]

00:23:21   by far you know for Best Value [TS]

00:23:24   general-purpose long-term ownership i [TS]

00:23:26   think john is $PERCENT right that you [TS]

00:23:28   should probably be looking at a honda [TS]

00:23:29   accord however honda accords because i'm [TS]

00:23:35   not really sure what all the reasons are [TS]

00:23:37   behind us but they have terrible [TS]

00:23:39   residuals and and by that i mean they [TS]

00:23:41   lose value very quickly for the first [TS]

00:23:43   few years after they are new so I'm more [TS]

00:23:46   quickly than you'd expect for carpets [TS]

00:23:47   that says as good and reliable isn't as [TS]

00:23:50   a Japanese sedan [TS]

00:23:52   so my pic is actually a used 2010 honda [TS]

00:23:57   accord EXL v6 with a six-speed [TS]

00:24:01   at with navigation blue book retail on [TS]

00:24:04   these is only 17,000 and because honda [TS]

00:24:07   accord [TS]

00:24:08   they're everywhere you'll be able to [TS]

00:24:09   find it in exactly what the [TS]

00:24:10   configuration you want exactly the color [TS]

00:24:12   you want you can probably even choose [TS]

00:24:14   the dealer you want to go to like that [TS]

00:24:15   there that common and so you know for [TS]

00:24:19   17,000 it's a v6 accord so it's faster [TS]

00:24:23   than Syracuse's it's only a 2010 model [TS]

00:24:26   it's probably you know it's figure it's [TS]

00:24:28   about three years old is probably gonna [TS]

00:24:29   have like thirty thousand you know the [TS]

00:24:30   numbers i'm not sure it's faster v6 2010 [TS]

00:24:34   versus the the current generation [TS]

00:24:35   four-cylinder look up the speeds if it's [TS]

00:24:38   faster i would be surprised if it's [TS]

00:24:39   faster by much [TS]

00:24:41   ok maybe I i didn't i didn't check that [TS]

00:24:43   so so something like that is what what's [TS]

00:24:45   different with the new four-cylinder is [TS]

00:24:46   a turbocharger just bigger or what is [TS]

00:24:48   more horsepower and I mean the thing is [TS]

00:24:51   the v6 is more powerful but the car [TS]

00:24:53   weighs more as well and like something [TS]

00:24:55   right 46 in every night it's probably [TS]

00:24:57   faster but it's it may be close [TS]

00:24:59   well so what you get with this so for 48 [TS]

00:25:02   thousand dollars less than than your [TS]

00:25:04   pick of the new SE model you get all of [TS]

00:25:08   the luxury options you get like you [TS]

00:25:10   because the EXL with that so the elves [TS]

00:25:12   leather so you get the leather seats [TS]

00:25:14   both sides i believe are powered you get [TS]

00:25:17   all sorts of like fancy cool stuff that [TS]

00:25:19   you don't get on the lower trim levels [TS]

00:25:20   and it's a v6 available with a six speed [TS]

00:25:24   or automatic if you if you want to go [TS]

00:25:25   that route but you know [TS]

00:25:26   come on we're going with a six-speed and [TS]

00:25:28   it has a navigation system and that's [TS]

00:25:31   for seventeen thousand dollars for a car [TS]

00:25:33   that is very reliable has you know and [TS]

00:25:36   is likely to have well under 40,000 [TS]

00:25:39   miles probably you know 25 to 45 that's [TS]

00:25:43   that's going to be really hard to beat [TS]

00:25:45   for general-purpose value 2013 has more [TS]

00:25:48   luxury features except for leather seats [TS]

00:25:50   and i would actually argue that I mean [TS]

00:25:52   maybe it's because I'm used to poor [TS]

00:25:53   man's cars but I like cloth seats better [TS]

00:25:54   than leather seats unless the leather [TS]

00:25:56   seats are heated because leather seats [TS]

00:25:57   are cold in the wintertime and i also [TS]

00:25:59   find them slippery so I like closets but [TS]

00:26:00   I mean like does this thing as all it [TS]

00:26:03   doesn't you know your things not going [TS]

00:26:04   to have like pandora internet radio or [TS]

00:26:06   Bluetooth stuff for your ipod connector [TS]

00:26:08   or USB audio jack or anything like that [TS]

00:26:10   it actually probably will have ipod and [TS]

00:26:12   USB in 2010 and I think they did have [TS]

00:26:13   that [TS]

00:26:14   at rear view camera i mean i don't but [TS]

00:26:16   they they're adding these fancy luxury [TS]

00:26:18   features in in the sport model I at 18 [TS]

00:26:21   inch alloy wheels maybe you have that I [TS]

00:26:22   think that the v6 might have come with [TS]

00:26:24   alloy wheels but i think it's like it's [TS]

00:26:25   a good contest in terms of what is very [TS]

00:26:27   luxury features but the one thing that [TS]

00:26:28   you are as that that your car doesn't is [TS]

00:26:30   the new car smell and its crew will [TS]

00:26:33   somebody get it wasn't refreshers it is [TS]

00:26:35   a big difference in price like if you if [TS]

00:26:37   you gave me the money like it you [TS]

00:26:39   probably go for the cheaper one and keep [TS]

00:26:40   the extra grand but if they say you have [TS]

00:26:42   25 grand to spend and whatever you don't [TS]

00:26:44   spend you just lose it's probably better [TS]

00:26:46   going up to 8,000 right get you the [TS]

00:26:48   accord is an interesting car and you in [TS]

00:26:50   general and I guess this is as good a [TS]

00:26:52   time as any to bring this up in general [TS]

00:26:54   when you when you deck out a car with [TS]

00:26:57   options or with with higher trim levels [TS]

00:27:00   you pay a lot for it upfront and then [TS]

00:27:02   re-sell it's not worth that much so it [TS]

00:27:05   generally speaking it's a really usually [TS]

00:27:08   a really good deal to either get a new [TS]

00:27:10   car with no extras on it or to get a few [TS]

00:27:14   years old one with all the extras [TS]

00:27:15   usually for less money because you know [TS]

00:27:19   if it depends what you're going for like [TS]

00:27:20   some people especially driving purists [TS]

00:27:23   that they want to cart away as little as [TS]

00:27:24   possible so they don't want a whole [TS]

00:27:25   bunch of of heavy luxury features like [TS]

00:27:27   like powered seats because that adds [TS]

00:27:29   weight they wanted to be a stripped-down [TS]

00:27:30   as possible and that's fine i'm not one [TS]

00:27:32   of those people at all [TS]

00:27:33   I I want every luxury feature that that [TS]

00:27:36   the car supports and even i'll try to [TS]

00:27:38   bolt on additional ones if i can [TS]

00:27:40   actually added an aux inject my maxima [TS]

00:27:43   that's another story [TS]

00:27:44   so you know I i want i want all the [TS]

00:27:49   luxury features and you cannot beat the [TS]

00:27:51   value of getting those on like a [TS]

00:27:53   three-year-old car instead of instead of [TS]

00:27:54   brand-new that's actually exactly true [TS]

00:27:57   and if you let me interject like that's [TS]

00:27:59   exactly what I did with my BMW is you [TS]

00:28:01   know like i said it's a 2011 and I got [TS]

00:28:03   it in the fall of $YEAR of $MONTH 2012 [TS]

00:28:07   and i believe was built in December 2010 [TS]

00:28:09   and it is a pretty well loaded three [TS]

00:28:11   series and it has almost all the bells [TS]

00:28:13   and whistles accept an automatic because [TS]

00:28:15   I like driving and I got it for [TS]

00:28:17   something like 20 grand less than the [TS]

00:28:20   sticker price just a couple years before [TS]

00:28:22   i don't remember exactly what the Delta [TS]

00:28:23   was but it was it was significant and [TS]

00:28:26   and I because of that I was able to get [TS]

00:28:28   into a much nicer car than i would have [TS]

00:28:30   been that I would have chosen to buy you [TS]

00:28:33   know if I tried if I spent the same [TS]

00:28:34   money on a new car wouldn't have gotten [TS]

00:28:36   something nearly as nice and actually I [TS]

00:28:37   don't have it in front of me but a [TS]

00:28:38   listener and written in asking hey if [TS]

00:28:40   I'm about to get a new car or my first [TS]

00:28:42   car what should i get and I apologize [TS]

00:28:44   because I don't have your name handy but [TS]

00:28:46   this is I think Marcus . is excellent [TS]

00:28:47   that in my experience having bought new [TS]

00:28:49   and bought lightly used i would go [TS]

00:28:52   lightly used every time because it gets [TS]

00:28:53   you into a whole new class of car that [TS]

00:28:55   that's considerably nicer in most cases [TS]

00:28:57   and because look at the pictures in this [TS]

00:28:59   the 2010 accord is that was the bad one [TS]

00:29:01   though I thought it was back in my [TS]

00:29:03   generation but no that's the bad one [TS]

00:29:05   what's better i know people said it was [TS]

00:29:06   too big besides that what did people [TS]

00:29:08   dislike about it I the one I drove was [TS]

00:29:11   automatically automatically was terrible [TS]

00:29:12   Thank You singer with a stick but like [TS]

00:29:14   it was kind of ugly and kind of like [TS]

00:29:16   they lost the accordionist they lost the [TS]

00:29:18   tight snappy nimbleness and it actually [TS]

00:29:21   felt more like big car that's you know I [TS]

00:29:24   I felt the things that annoy me about is [TS]

00:29:27   the ergonomics are often the automatic [TS]

00:29:28   was terrible [TS]

00:29:29   oh you know what a little bit bigger I [TS]

00:29:30   know why I picked that year in [TS]

00:29:32   particular because when the new [TS]

00:29:33   generation you can't get a stick with a [TS]

00:29:35   v6 anymore ride but the previous [TS]

00:29:37   generation you couldn't even cheaper [TS]

00:29:39   maybe go down like you know the bride [TS]

00:29:40   before that redesign get the basically [TS]

00:29:42   the same generation i have but get the [TS]

00:29:43   v6 with a stick that would probably be a [TS]

00:29:46   better choice yeah but you know but then [TS]

00:29:48   it would be older and would be no [TS]

00:29:49   possibly more maintenance than that a [TS]

00:29:51   2010 model but still I mean it isn't [TS]

00:29:53   that the point is I think having bought [TS]

00:29:56   used cars having leased cars and having [TS]

00:29:58   bought new cars and especially haven't [TS]

00:30:02   bought a new record I think buying an [TS]

00:30:04   accord new for the most part is not a [TS]

00:30:08   great value because they lose so much [TS]

00:30:11   value in their first year like when we [TS]

00:30:13   had an accord was a two thousand four [TS]

00:30:16   chord I think and it was totaled in an [TS]

00:30:19   accident and like a like a year after we [TS]

00:30:22   got or maybe a year and a half two years [TS]

00:30:23   after we got it [TS]

00:30:25   and with the insurance money that we got [TS]

00:30:27   for the car being total plus 1,000 of [TS]

00:30:30   our extra money we got a brand-new [TS]

00:30:31   current generation Accord was like a [TS]

00:30:33   year and a half two years later [TS]

00:30:35   all we had to kick him with an extra [TS]

00:30:36   thousand dollars to get a brand-new we [TS]

00:30:38   got the same color to like that you know [TS]

00:30:40   two model years up one or two model [TS]

00:30:41   years up front we got this so that's [TS]

00:30:43   pretty much the same options i was [TS]

00:30:46   actually but it was actually better [TS]

00:30:47   options because we got the special [TS]

00:30:49   edition with like yeah this is the [TS]

00:30:51   everyone's in admitting they're [TS]

00:30:52   embarrassing things here so you know the [TS]

00:30:54   car bra and he's got the white car is my [TS]

00:30:56   first one so this I wouldn't have picked [TS]

00:30:59   the special edition Accord which was [TS]

00:31:01   like it was like the end of this [TS]

00:31:02   generations model year range i think and [TS]

00:31:05   they were just throwing it all those [TS]

00:31:06   weird extras and stuff and this is a car [TS]

00:31:07   that a buyer head you know optioned out [TS]

00:31:11   for them like your bill gave me this car [TS]

00:31:13   and give me all these things on it i [TS]

00:31:15   want the specialization how much did you [TS]

00:31:16   want that any bailed so they had this [TS]

00:31:18   car sitting there with like the extra [TS]

00:31:20   trunk liner thing and stupid mud.flap [TS]

00:31:22   things also stuff and the special [TS]

00:31:24   edition has pho carbon fiber on some [TS]

00:31:27   parts of the day oh my god [TS]

00:31:29   so my card is the special edition and it [TS]

00:31:32   has full carbon fiber but it was it was [TS]

00:31:33   a thousand dollars and especially I got [TS]

00:31:35   a brand new car for a thousand dollars a [TS]

00:31:37   couple years after another brand your [TS]

00:31:38   car and it is actually better than the [TS]

00:31:40   the one that got totaled so is there [TS]

00:31:41   like a sticker or an extra pinstripe to [TS]

00:31:43   indicate the special edition there is [TS]

00:31:45   nothing to indicate except slightly [TS]

00:31:47   different interior surface treatments as [TS]

00:31:50   far as I can hold on marco was not one [TS]

00:31:52   to be throwing stones on this year this [TS]

00:31:53   issue doesn't one of your cars have like [TS]

00:31:55   a plaque or something denoting what [TS]

00:31:57   number it is the VIN plate [TS]

00:32:00   oh no no I thought you know what I'm [TS]

00:32:02   gonna do [TS]

00:32:03   oh I thought the rocket had a special [TS]

00:32:06   like this is number one of 1000 about to [TS]

00:32:08   though how many of those are made like [TS]

00:32:10   this legitimate does kind of give them [TS]

00:32:13   if it has a plaque with the number i [TS]

00:32:15   give it a total pass how many cars like [TS]

00:32:17   that are there in the entire United [TS]

00:32:19   States it actually is 704 right so [TS]

00:32:22   that's legitimate that's not you know [TS]

00:32:24   there's a couple more than that sir and [TS]

00:32:27   I will say though back to the core value [TS]

00:32:29   think they're there is one exception to [TS]

00:32:31   to my advice is generally not a good [TS]

00:32:34   deal to get new and that this applies to [TS]

00:32:36   a lot of cars that is least specials [TS]

00:32:38   because you know Lisa's are calculated [TS]

00:32:41   by it interest and then what they think [TS]

00:32:46   the value of the car will be at the end [TS]

00:32:47   of the lease and you you basically pay [TS]

00:32:49   you know you split that $OPERAND x 36 [TS]

00:32:51   whatever number of months you haven't [TS]

00:32:52   that's what you pay per month [TS]

00:32:53   plus interest so if the if the [TS]

00:32:56   manufacturer thinks the car you know [TS]

00:32:58   they just they based on on past [TS]

00:33:00   performance and stats and you know lots [TS]

00:33:02   of analysis and math they think the cars [TS]

00:33:04   gonna be worth X after three years and [TS]

00:33:06   about this number of miles and that's [TS]

00:33:08   what they price it with lease specials [TS]

00:33:10   they will juice the numbers to generate [TS]

00:33:13   more sales in the short term and then [TS]

00:33:14   kind of pay for it later or just hope [TS]

00:33:16   things don't turn out very poorly later [TS]

00:33:18   and so these specials are often used in [TS]

00:33:21   just clear out inventory or boost the [TS]

00:33:23   sales numbers for a month you know [TS]

00:33:24   juking the stats and wire terms and and [TS]

00:33:29   so lease specials oftentimes can like i [TS]

00:33:32   was looking there is there some Lise [TS]

00:33:35   Lise guide.com aside I found when I was [TS]

00:33:37   researching for this topic and they had [TS]

00:33:40   one they have a cadillac ats which is [TS]

00:33:43   Cadillacs new BMW 3-series competitor [TS]

00:33:45   they had a cadillac ats for 360 a month [TS]

00:33:50   for three years [TS]

00:33:52   that's cheap that's really that's [TS]

00:33:53   cheaper than most record Lisa's like [TS]

00:33:55   that's really connected and then and you [TS]

00:33:59   can occasionally get a record for like [TS]

00:34:00   250 you know and and then you know you [TS]

00:34:02   add a little more if you want more [TS]

00:34:03   extras but lately specials are generally [TS]

00:34:06   speaking they can be very very good [TS]

00:34:09   deals and way better deals and you can [TS]

00:34:10   never get with regularly for financing [TS]

00:34:12   just because you're the manufacturer is [TS]

00:34:15   just kind of the car more than the [TS]

00:34:17   dealer's even can because they're [TS]

00:34:19   they're betting against their own [TS]

00:34:20   financial future one thing um so I I did [TS]

00:34:25   pick two other cars for the best value [TS]

00:34:27   thing one over very quickly if you have [TS]

00:34:31   different priorities than us and somehow [TS]

00:34:33   you're still listening to this podcast [TS]

00:34:34   if he if you actually want to drive a [TS]

00:34:37   very comfortable marshmallow i would say [TS]

00:34:41   a 2008 era lexus ES is a really good bed [TS]

00:34:46   just mom had one of these in its it's a [TS]

00:34:49   fantastic car it the blue book retail [TS]

00:34:51   that right now is about 20,000 for 2008 [TS]

00:34:54   lexus es350 des is based on the camry [TS]

00:34:57   and so it's basically what you'd expect [TS]

00:35:00   from a a luxury fide camry so it's it's [TS]

00:35:03   completely a marshmallow very very [TS]

00:35:07   you know comfortable soft squishy you [TS]

00:35:09   don't have any road feeling whatsoever [TS]

00:35:11   if you want that and of course is no [TS]

00:35:12   stick it's an extremely luxurious [TS]

00:35:15   interior it's a very large car you can [TS]

00:35:16   fit a ton in it and it has a 270 [TS]

00:35:20   horsepower v6 so that's that's no pretty [TS]

00:35:23   reasonable for 20 grand if you actually [TS]

00:35:25   have those marshmallow like priorities [TS]

00:35:27   also honorable mention for lexus the RX [TS]

00:35:31   350 SUV that they sell so many of those [TS]

00:35:34   things and you can get one for about the [TS]

00:35:36   same price and my they're almost this is [TS]

00:35:39   emerging in the minivan territory and so [TS]

00:35:41   like right now only know this because [TS]

00:35:43   his parents have had both of those cars [TS]

00:35:45   that and they are they are you know [TS]

00:35:46   they're not for me at all but they're [TS]

00:35:48   very nice cars and lexus the reason why [TS]

00:35:51   alexis is is so good you know it's based [TS]

00:35:55   on trade it tends to have very very good [TS]

00:35:57   resale value so you don't tend to lose a [TS]

00:35:59   lot with it they're actually pretty good [TS]

00:36:01   Lisa's like tip scar tissue has an is250 [TS]

00:36:03   and i have three series and the lease on [TS]

00:36:07   both of those like my lease is way [TS]

00:36:09   higher than hers [TS]

00:36:10   even though her car was about the same [TS]

00:36:12   like MSRP price as mine [TS]

00:36:14   I'm just because Alexis actually [TS]

00:36:16   residuals but all that aside I think my [TS]

00:36:19   third pic for the car thing is if you [TS]

00:36:23   have priorities more like ours but not [TS]

00:36:25   quite as ridiculous as cases [TS]

00:36:27   what's that supposed to mean I would say [TS]

00:36:30   you should get the car that is pretty [TS]

00:36:33   much my 3 series but two years older get [TS]

00:36:36   the 2009 BMW 328 x I and the reason why [TS]

00:36:40   is because it's so blue book retail is [TS]

00:36:43   about 20 15 on that it's it's the same [TS]

00:36:47   same as mine couple years older it will [TS]

00:36:50   you know 2009 BMW is going to have me [TS]

00:36:52   maybe 50,000 miles on it 4,000 something [TS]

00:36:55   like that but what I like about this [TS]

00:36:57   pick is that it is a completely [TS]

00:37:01   different it's a completely different [TS]

00:37:03   level of of luxury and handling and [TS]

00:37:05   performance even though it has what [TS]

00:37:07   Casey thinks is a too slow engine it's a [TS]

00:37:09   200-230 for horsepower inline-six and it [TS]

00:37:14   also has all-wheel drive and I like all [TS]

00:37:17   the drive a lot you know they're there [TS]

00:37:18   are times when its overrated but overall [TS]

00:37:20   I like [TS]

00:37:20   a lot and for twenty-one thousand [TS]

00:37:23   dollars you get a really really awesome [TS]

00:37:26   car and because it's a few years old [TS]

00:37:29   you can get one without all sorts of [TS]

00:37:30   options for not much of a premium so i [TS]

00:37:33   would say 2009 BMW 328 x I for people [TS]

00:37:37   with our priorities is a really really [TS]

00:37:39   good pic if you want if you want to save [TS]

00:37:41   some money [TS]

00:37:42   I like that a lot better than your older [TS]

00:37:43   record pic i would much rather have that [TS]

00:37:45   that I older BMW than that older accord [TS]

00:37:49   with all the luxury stuff on it the only [TS]

00:37:51   thing the court has going for it is that [TS]

00:37:52   there is more room for a lot if you have [TS]

00:37:53   like non toddler or tiny size kids if [TS]

00:37:57   you have like teenagers it better or if [TS]

00:38:00   you're you drive around adults [TS]

00:38:01   frequently oh yeah even a little [TS]

00:38:03   background about my dad's 328 purchase a [TS]

00:38:05   similar vintage I want to sit in the [TS]

00:38:07   backseat [TS]

00:38:07   yes the the accord is a much bigger car [TS]

00:38:09   I mean note that that's the thing with [TS]

00:38:11   the BMW you're paying for that awesome [TS]

00:38:13   engine you're paying for the luxury [TS]

00:38:15   features are paying for the awesome [TS]

00:38:16   handling and the four-wheel drive and [TS]

00:38:17   the other dr yeah . up on so you know [TS]

00:38:20   you're paying for all those things [TS]

00:38:21   that's what you know the the accord you [TS]

00:38:23   can get newer for a lot less money but [TS]

00:38:26   it's just like with their new you can [TS]

00:38:28   get a new record for a lot less than or [TS]

00:38:29   new 328 but and for any record is better [TS]

00:38:33   and if you respect like space and stuff [TS]

00:38:34   like that but then the 328 is a car that [TS]

00:38:37   you know you you feel something when you [TS]

00:38:39   drive it and you know notnot you know [TS]

00:38:41   literally like you feel excited you you [TS]

00:38:43   enjoy the car and you know some people [TS]

00:38:45   they don't care they rather have the [TS]

00:38:46   better value where they need certain [TS]

00:38:47   features that doesn't offer fine but for [TS]

00:38:50   for people like us generally speaking 3 [TS]

00:38:53   series is awesome i would agree with [TS]

00:38:56   that now is it is this the juncture that [TS]

00:38:58   the time at which I get to lecture you [TS]

00:39:00   about all-wheel drive or do we want to [TS]

00:39:02   go a different direction [TS]

00:39:03   this is a good time alright well firstly [TS]

00:39:06   I have to pull a John Syracuse and do a [TS]

00:39:08   little real-time follow-up can't find a [TS]

00:39:10   name i did find the name of the [TS]

00:39:12   individual that emailed us asking for [TS]

00:39:14   tips about a first car that was just in [TS]

00:39:15   woodbridge so thank you justin for quasi [TS]

00:39:17   inspiring that segment uh it's so mark [TS]

00:39:20   and I have gone back and forth a lot [TS]

00:39:21   about whether or not he needs all wheel [TS]

00:39:23   drive and in the comedy of this is I [TS]

00:39:25   spent my high school years in [TS]

00:39:27   Connecticut like we've already [TS]

00:39:27   established and i learned to drive on in [TS]

00:39:31   snow and I've lived in virgin [TS]

00:39:34   you in different parts of Virginia for [TS]

00:39:35   the last are basically decade and I've [TS]

00:39:39   been insisting to Marco that he really [TS]

00:39:41   doesn't need all-wheel drive and in fact [TS]

00:39:43   a very close friend of mine Brian the [TS]

00:39:46   same guy who had the r32 which was all [TS]

00:39:49   wheel drive now has a 2009 335 the rear [TS]

00:39:52   wheel drive and he lives in Morgantown [TS]

00:39:54   West Virginia where there's mountains [TS]

00:39:56   and there's nothing but mountains and he [TS]

00:39:58   gets by just fine of course he's also [TS]

00:40:00   putting on hugely expensive finish snow [TS]

00:40:02   tires if i'm not mistaken but we'll [TS]

00:40:04   leave that out for this part of the [TS]

00:40:05   conversation and then another friend of [TS]

00:40:07   mine Sean who also lives in Connecticut [TS]

00:40:08   he used to rock a 240sx way back in the [TS]

00:40:12   day again with snow tires but rear-wheel [TS]

00:40:14   drive in snow in mountainous areas of [TS]

00:40:17   connecticut is the mountains but it's [TS]

00:40:18   snowy area and it worked just fine and [TS]

00:40:20   so Marco and I've been going back and [TS]

00:40:21   forth about whether or not he really [TS]

00:40:23   needs all-wheel drive and without [TS]

00:40:25   totally ruining everything I will claim [TS]

00:40:27   victory by saying i know for a fact that [TS]

00:40:29   his next car is not all wheel drive end [TS]

00:40:33   is indeed rear-wheel drive and they're [TS]

00:40:35   really funny thing is that during all [TS]

00:40:37   this time you were trying to convince me [TS]

00:40:38   that I didn't need it [TS]

00:40:39   you ended up buying an all-wheel drive [TS]

00:40:41   car and now I've ordered one is [TS]

00:40:42   rear-wheel drive it yes this is exactly [TS]

00:40:44   true in in richmond virginia we get [TS]

00:40:46   typically to snowstorms a year to [TS]

00:40:48   blizzards a year of about three or four [TS]

00:40:50   inches each and i know john is just [TS]

00:40:53   dying know you know you know Marco you [TS]

00:40:55   can you can think about Casey and he [TS]

00:40:57   told you you don't need four-wheel drive [TS]

00:40:59   when you're pushing your expensive new [TS]

00:41:00   car or some other situation like I i [TS]

00:41:06   don't know whether you need four-wheel [TS]

00:41:08   drive but going with a rear-wheel-drive [TS]

00:41:10   living where you live like global [TS]

00:41:13   warming is your only help because I even [TS]

00:41:16   if you get the family to finish snow [TS]

00:41:18   tires and that thing you do not want to [TS]

00:41:20   be going up and down any Hills in a [TS]

00:41:22   winter storm in your giant expensive [TS]

00:41:25   high-performance rear-wheel drive sedan [TS]

00:41:26   because you will be embarrassed by honda [TS]

00:41:28   civic front-wheel-drive passing you [TS]

00:41:30   going uphill because it can claw its way [TS]

00:41:31   up with the skinny little crappy tires [TS]

00:41:33   and you with your high-performance large [TS]

00:41:37   contact patch waterskis spinning in the [TS]

00:41:40   back be going over so well there are a [TS]

00:41:42   few reasons why i thought you know what [TS]

00:41:45   actually in red medium [TS]

00:41:47   overall evaluating my situation I think [TS]

00:41:50   i can get away with a rear-wheel-drive [TS]

00:41:51   car and and it's mainly because i live i [TS]

00:41:53   live in westchester new york right about [TS]

00:41:55   the city we do get snow here [TS]

00:41:58   not as much as you get up state but we [TS]

00:42:00   do get snow here and in a pretty [TS]

00:42:02   regularly in in some winters but the [TS]

00:42:05   last two winters we've had almost none [TS]

00:42:07   granted it's only you know late January [TS]

00:42:09   now you know it's but still we've had [TS]

00:42:12   very little left to winters I have an [TS]

00:42:14   all-wheel drive car and i love i love [TS]

00:42:16   that i had that in the snow however it's [TS]

00:42:19   not gonna drive car with all-season [TS]

00:42:20   tires that are now is what is your wheel [TS]

00:42:23   drive car 23 I think you're getting rid [TS]

00:42:25   of that this was replacing it it at [TS]

00:42:27   least runs out yeah yeah so right now I [TS]

00:42:29   have this car right so that there are [TS]

00:42:32   two things that made me decide i could [TS]

00:42:34   do a rear-wheel-drive 1 i've been [TS]

00:42:36   learning about snow tires and I've never [TS]

00:42:37   had snow tires before and I've all the [TS]

00:42:41   research I'm doing indicates that they [TS]

00:42:42   really do help quite a bit and and a lot [TS]

00:42:45   of countries are are requiring them now [TS]

00:42:47   for winter driving and quite a lot of [TS]

00:42:51   countries actually and so you know the [TS]

00:42:53   evidence is pretty strong that i should [TS]

00:42:55   have snow tires anyway even if I got an [TS]

00:42:57   all-wheel-drive car so you know that's [TS]

00:43:00   that that's what about the point i'm [TS]

00:43:02   going to have no tires next winter but [TS]

00:43:04   what has mostly change my mind is that [TS]

00:43:07   we are now a two car family we my wife [TS]

00:43:09   has a car and we both like the same kind [TS]

00:43:12   of cars we both like mid-size sedans so [TS]

00:43:16   we're both we both own mid-size sedans [TS]

00:43:18   and that's going to continue it for the [TS]

00:43:20   foreseeable future and then if we ever [TS]

00:43:22   do need a minivan she has agreed that [TS]

00:43:23   she will be the one who will have it [TS]

00:43:25   because i have the best wife in the [TS]

00:43:26   universe so we will always have a car [TS]

00:43:31   that can work in snow if ifs no happens [TS]

00:43:34   and it can be her car so her car can be [TS]

00:43:38   all wheel drive with or without snows [TS]

00:43:41   and my car can be a variable drive with [TS]

00:43:43   snows in the winter and I think that'll [TS]

00:43:46   be fine and they're there have been so [TS]

00:43:47   few occasions during my 328 least where [TS]

00:43:52   I've actually needed to drive in the [TS]

00:43:53   snow and some of them don't have to kill [TS]

00:43:55   you [TS]

00:43:55   that's probably your saving grace right [TS]

00:43:56   that's yeah that's true and [TS]

00:43:58   and in some situations i felt the arbol [TS]

00:44:01   drive actually gives and I'm sure [TS]

00:44:03   everybody who's an herbal agree with [TS]

00:44:04   this it gives a false sense of security [TS]

00:44:06   in that it helps you go if you are going [TS]

00:44:10   to be stuck it it helps you go but it [TS]

00:44:11   doesn't really help you stop and it [TS]

00:44:14   doesn't really help your grip it just [TS]

00:44:16   helps you get out if you are stopped [TS]

00:44:18   when you're trying to make your way up [TS]

00:44:20   the hill believe me the ability to go [TS]

00:44:22   something becomes very important [TS]

00:44:23   yeah yeah totally so going up a snowy [TS]

00:44:26   hill in a novel drive car is certainly [TS]

00:44:29   you know I'd rather have all wheel drive [TS]

00:44:31   at that moment then rear but I think [TS]

00:44:34   rear with snows can probably at least do [TS]

00:44:36   it and because i need to do that so [TS]

00:44:39   incredibly infrequently so you know my [TS]

00:44:40   next car [TS]

00:44:41   it's also going to be on a three-year [TS]

00:44:42   lease i don't think i think during the [TS]

00:44:45   entirety of the time i have that car I [TS]

00:44:48   might need to drive a snowy hill maybe [TS]

00:44:50   once [TS]

00:44:51   like that'sthat's how often i would need [TS]

00:44:52   to do that given the last few in tourism [TS]

00:44:55   just don't go for chicken salad it's not [TS]

00:44:57   know of course i would make my left one [TS]

00:44:59   so i did is a minivan gonna be four [TS]

00:45:03   wheel drive because we had a minivan [TS]

00:45:04   growing up was one of the cars that i [TS]

00:45:05   drove one of the cars that i learned to [TS]

00:45:07   drive on and it was a four-wheel drive [TS]

00:45:08   minivan and they are i don't know if [TS]

00:45:10   they're even exist anymore I have no [TS]

00:45:12   idea [TS]

00:45:13   4-wheel Drive minivans like this is we [TS]

00:45:14   had trouble finding we got the mazda mpv [TS]

00:45:16   which was four wheel drive and actually [TS]

00:45:17   like jacked up a little bit compared to [TS]

00:45:19   other minivans and it was great [TS]

00:45:21   snot rags and if you're talking about [TS]

00:45:22   real stone handling you make a good [TS]

00:45:24   point that ground clearance is a pretty [TS]

00:45:25   big issue and and that's why things like [TS]

00:45:29   Jeeps and SUVs tend to be and trucks [TS]

00:45:32   tend to be better in this no I don't [TS]

00:45:34   know if grant because grandparents [TS]

00:45:35   really help the levels of snow on a [TS]

00:45:37   ploughed road because that's what kills [TS]

00:45:38   you is like the plowed roads we had oh [TS]

00:45:39   yeah we haven't it's now the past four [TS]

00:45:41   years like many years ago we had some [TS]

00:45:43   big snow winters here and I was [TS]

00:45:44   commuting when you can't it's like you [TS]

00:45:46   gotta go to work and you've got to come [TS]

00:45:47   home sometimes you have to go to work [TS]

00:45:49   and come home and pick up the kids so it [TS]

00:45:50   is like mandatory trips built into your [TS]

00:45:52   day and doesn't matter what the weather [TS]

00:45:54   is like you have to go to daycare and [TS]

00:45:56   get the kids you have to leave work you [TS]

00:45:57   have to go home and is a certain number [TS]

00:45:59   of pills there and some of the worst [TS]

00:46:00   things that I've been through I've gone [TS]

00:46:02   like on the you know the exit ramp to [TS]

00:46:04   get off 95 where I get off to go home in [TS]

00:46:07   the car with the kids [TS]

00:46:08   cutting my way in my crappy front-wheel [TS]

00:46:10   drive Honda Civic [TS]

00:46:12   through like the twisted bodies of [TS]

00:46:14   Mercedes BMW and lexus that are all the [TS]

00:46:17   entrance ramp all twisted some strange [TS]

00:46:18   angle all half off the road because they [TS]

00:46:20   couldn't make it up the ramp and I'm [TS]

00:46:21   just going to continue to returning you [TS]

00:46:23   know front-wheel-drive all-season tires [TS]

00:46:26   terrible performance no horsepower and [TS]

00:46:28   they're all stuck and I'm not see but [TS]

00:46:30   that car is built it to a degree and [TS]

00:46:32   hear me out its kind of built for the [TS]

00:46:34   snow in the sense of its not overpowered [TS]

00:46:36   so taking off from a stop and W so since [TS]

00:46:39   you have a stick you can you can feather [TS]

00:46:41   that you can feather the application of [TS]

00:46:42   the clutch didn't and the throttle and [TS]

00:46:44   so you can take off very gently [TS]

00:46:47   additionally and I think this is where [TS]

00:46:48   the minivans come back in the tires are [TS]

00:46:51   comparatively much thinner you don't you [TS]

00:46:53   had talked about his water skis and [TS]

00:46:54   you're absolutely right [TS]

00:46:55   having dinner tires to cut through the [TS]

00:46:57   snow helps a lot you it doesn't weigh a [TS]

00:46:59   lot which is it which is a mark against [TS]

00:47:01   it but you know all the wait is over the [TS]

00:47:04   over the wheel over the front wheels in [TS]

00:47:05   those are the drive wheels and so there [TS]

00:47:08   yeah there are that is the only time in [TS]

00:47:10   which front-wheel-drive is an absolute [TS]

00:47:12   advantage in to build on what I believed [TS]

00:47:14   was that usage on my parents had a GMC [TS]

00:47:17   safari a four-wheel-drive GMC safari [TS]

00:47:19   when I was in high school and I was [TS]

00:47:21   growing up and I kid you not that thing [TS]

00:47:23   was a tank in the snow I mean it would [TS]

00:47:24   go anywhere [TS]

00:47:26   it was ridiculous because we wait a [TS]

00:47:27   million pounds and had relatively thin [TS]

00:47:30   tires and it had all wheel drive and it [TS]

00:47:32   would go anywhere you know the BMW for [TS]

00:47:36   drive systems aren't like it's not you [TS]

00:47:39   know that the most of the time it's a [TS]

00:47:40   rear-wheel-drive car it's not as [TS]

00:47:41   terrible as you know you've got one [TS]

00:47:43   Casey like it if they'd that I believe [TS]

00:47:46   they're think sounds like it's in all [TS]

00:47:47   the power to the rear we know it's [TS]

00:47:48   excitedly what 6040 by default i think [TS]

00:47:51   that's right but to that some of them it [TS]

00:47:53   maybe it maybe I'm thinking of the [TS]

00:47:54   Ferrari for four wheel drive so I just [TS]

00:47:56   get for every manufacturing systems [TS]

00:47:58   different is that the at the FF is that [TS]

00:48:00   the one thinking of I think you're right [TS]

00:48:01   yes hundred percent of the power to the [TS]

00:48:04   rear wheels until like they slip them in [TS]

00:48:06   it starts redistributing them that I [TS]

00:48:08   want to pick that is 125 thousand at a [TS]

00:48:10   time machine go forward in time 15 years [TS]

00:48:12   and when I don't have that car will ever [TS]

00:48:14   be 25,000 know it's pretty ugly maybe [TS]

00:48:16   we'll be yeah you never know I'd [TS]

00:48:17   actually really quickly another story I [TS]

00:48:19   wanted to tell was shortly after I got [TS]

00:48:20   my 335 on a completely dry day on the [TS]

00:48:24   biggest road [TS]

00:48:25   that runs through the length of richmond [TS]

00:48:27   and in a time and a place where I really [TS]

00:48:28   shouldn't have done it i thought to [TS]

00:48:29   myself you know what I want to see what [TS]

00:48:31   this cars really made of and I was doing [TS]

00:48:33   you turn on a multi multi lane road each [TS]

00:48:35   direction and so I turned the the DSC [TS]

00:48:38   fall off so the car was completely raw [TS]

00:48:41   it's not like I believe Mercedes where [TS]

00:48:43   it still has nannies there so you can't [TS]

00:48:45   get too sideways while I was doing my [TS]

00:48:47   u-turn and I was from from a dead stop [TS]

00:48:49   so i get about halfway through the turn [TS]

00:48:51   I'm in first dscs fall off remember that [TS]

00:48:53   BMW non am BMWs do not have limited-slip [TS]

00:48:56   rear and so I got halfway through the [TS]

00:48:58   turn I stand on the gas and next thing i [TS]

00:49:00   know i'm at a 45 degree angle with the [TS]

00:49:02   way the road is supposed to go and [TS]

00:49:04   realizing well this thing is a lot more [TS]

00:49:06   rear bias the legacy was and also has a [TS]

00:49:08   lot more power so I mean it's a it's [TS]

00:49:11   exactly like you said John it's it's [TS]

00:49:12   much more rear happy than a lot of other [TS]

00:49:14   four wheel drive systems are oh yeah and [TS]

00:49:16   but but at the same time it does it does [TS]

00:49:19   feel extremely different from a [TS]

00:49:21   rear-wheel-drive three ya like it like [TS]

00:49:23   that it feels very driving feeling is [TS]

00:49:25   completely different and you you can [TS]

00:49:27   tell which one you're in instantly if [TS]

00:49:28   you pay attention to like you can you [TS]

00:49:30   can very very easily tell besides the [TS]

00:49:32   tremendous ugly badge from the new ones [TS]

00:49:34   that's not what they were thinking with [TS]

00:49:36   that but yeah I wonder what they were [TS]

00:49:39   thinking if that's if that's the actual [TS]

00:49:41   split of its forty percent mandatory to [TS]

00:49:43   the front and then you know very well [TS]

00:49:44   that's a lot like a pirate too i don't [TS]

00:49:46   know why they would split I believe it [TS]

00:49:48   has the N I believe it has the ability [TS]

00:49:50   to send a hundred percent 2ne1 wheel it [TS]

00:49:53   in a slippage but what the research says [TS]

00:49:56   I'm pretty sure it can send up two [TS]

00:49:58   hundred percent 2ne1 wheel but by [TS]

00:50:00   default 6040 now I couldn't that's cause [TS]

00:50:03   usually default to like massively rear [TS]

00:50:05   and then only start sending to the front [TS]

00:50:07   of things slip so I'm wondering why they [TS]

00:50:09   why they want to maybe they want that [TS]

00:50:11   slippery like your binder by the [TS]

00:50:13   four-wheel-drive you wanted you want [TS]

00:50:14   that driving characteristic i don't know [TS]

00:50:15   when we get BMW engineers and she'll ask [TS]

00:50:17   them that we don't have to because [TS]

00:50:19   wikipedia says that you guys are right [TS]

00:50:20   while you were while you were talking I [TS]

00:50:22   was able to get my own real-time follow [TS]

00:50:24   up here again and it is a 60-40 split [TS]

00:50:27   rear biased and then the extract can [TS]

00:50:29   react within a tenth of a second to just [TS]

00:50:31   redistribute up to one hundred percent [TS]

00:50:32   of engine power to the front or rear [TS]

00:50:34   axle and i will say generally you know [TS]

00:50:36   as these systems go again [TS]

00:50:38   manufacturers all the drive systems [TS]

00:50:39   little bit different i would say lexus [TS]

00:50:42   is ok I've seen it fail few times X [TS]

00:50:46   drive is awesome [TS]

00:50:48   I i really do think as as these systems [TS]

00:50:51   go [TS]

00:50:51   BMW xDrive is is very very good i don't [TS]

00:50:54   have a lot of experience with Quattro [TS]

00:50:56   and I know that adding people are [TS]

00:50:57   fanatical about it so I can't really say [TS]

00:50:59   whether it's better than quattro it from [TS]

00:51:01   from the research i've done it seems [TS]

00:51:04   like people tend to agree that there are [TS]

00:51:05   at least equals and some people say [TS]

00:51:07   extras better I'd I can't leave at that [TS]

00:51:10   but it is really amazing and it's the [TS]

00:51:14   only thing that it can't do is a diff [TS]

00:51:16   lock but if it can send a hundred [TS]

00:51:18   percent of the power to any of the four [TS]

00:51:21   wheels i guess in theory [TS]

00:51:24   you're very likely to get stuck right [TS]

00:51:25   well it's not any of the four wheels [TS]

00:51:27   which is where the trick like s4 [TS]

00:51:29   differentials and whatnot get really [TS]

00:51:31   interesting it'sit's any of the two [TS]

00:51:32   axles oh so so then what happens if i'm [TS]

00:51:36   not mistaken the last time i said that i [TS]

00:51:37   was talking about wastegates and blow [TS]

00:51:38   off valves but my understanding is it [TS]

00:51:40   gets it gets all the power of the front [TS]

00:51:42   rear axle and then by the DSC and dtc [TS]

00:51:45   will do some crazy junk with breaking [TS]

00:51:48   the wheel that's spinning in order to [TS]

00:51:50   cake to to get the net effect of a [TS]

00:51:52   limited-slip differential even though [TS]

00:51:54   your systems are terrible ones that one [TS]

00:51:56   that use wheel breaking instead of you [TS]

00:51:58   not good especially when you try to get [TS]

00:52:00   us know you're here let me take traction [TS]

00:52:02   control is also your enemy [TS]

00:52:03   most of the time trying to yes it will [TS]

00:52:05   break the sleep of slipping wheel and [TS]

00:52:06   you it's like no I want to go up the [TS]

00:52:09   hill [TS]

00:52:10   don't stop applying the brakes i was now [TS]

00:52:12   slide down in turn sideways as the civic [TS]

00:52:14   drives fast me on entrance ramp goodness [TS]

00:52:18   i don't know i really i I really hope [TS]

00:52:21   that snow tires are are good they re all [TS]

00:52:24   see just all season tires are fine [TS]

00:52:25   that's again the problem with the buying [TS]

00:52:27   expensive cars as they come with high [TS]

00:52:28   performance tires which are great in the [TS]

00:52:30   summer and are not great and we like [TS]

00:52:32   just plain old all-season tires that [TS]

00:52:34   like the cheap cars come with even those [TS]

00:52:36   are miles ahead of the slicks that [TS]

00:52:38   you're gonna get with like an actual [TS]

00:52:39   high-performance car [TS]

00:52:40   well that's that's not entirely true so [TS]

00:52:42   what we just that last week got a couple [TS]

00:52:44   inches of snow which again for blood for [TS]

00:52:46   richmond is a blizzard and i took the [TS]

00:52:49   335 out just around the neighborhood and [TS]

00:52:51   has the run flat stock summer tires on [TS]

00:52:54   it and parcel seasons [TS]

00:52:57   yeah they are they call them summer [TS]

00:52:58   tires because usually this the stock [TS]

00:53:00   ones don't have that like I'm thinking [TS]

00:53:01   you know when you for example the 1m is [TS]

00:53:03   going to have probably the crazy tire [TS]

00:53:05   standard but the regular 3 series is [TS]

00:53:07   going to have all season tires i have to [TS]

00:53:09   a man out another summer i'm almost done [TS]

00:53:11   i had mine came with all seasons my [TS]

00:53:14   328is at the compound or the tread [TS]

00:53:16   pattern of both i often my head I don't [TS]

00:53:19   call i'm cheating and trying to look at [TS]

00:53:21   Iraq while we're talking but I mean also [TS]

00:53:24   consider it does have the m-sport [TS]

00:53:25   package which again is almost entirely [TS]

00:53:27   aesthetic junk but let's maybe that uses [TS]

00:53:30   different wheels though and it might [TS]

00:53:32   have come with summer tires [TS]

00:53:33   yeah could be I mean red yeah this is a [TS]

00:53:35   bridgestone potenza re050a run-flat max [TS]

00:53:39   performance summer that's it [TS]

00:53:42   so how did you know it actually did all [TS]

00:53:45   right i mean it to be honest I found out [TS]

00:53:46   was it in Virginia [TS]

00:53:48   well like I said it was about two inches [TS]

00:53:49   which for us is a legitimate blizzard [TS]

00:53:51   and schools canceled the following day I [TS]

00:53:54   kid you not [TS]

00:53:55   wait wait wait a second how what is the [TS]

00:53:59   justification for cancelling school when [TS]

00:54:02   there is two inches of snow is it [TS]

00:54:03   because the buses can't get through and [TS]

00:54:06   no i don't think so i think part of the [TS]

00:54:07   problem is we don't have the plowing the [TS]

00:54:09   plows and all the other things you guys [TS]

00:54:11   have it but I to inches you don't need [TS]

00:54:13   to plan to it's hard to know your cars [TS]

00:54:15   over a part of it is that we drive in [TS]

00:54:17   the snow as well as Californians drive [TS]

00:54:19   in the rain don't emailing and part of [TS]

00:54:22   it is because there's been a couple [TS]

00:54:23   times lately that the county in which we [TS]

00:54:25   live has not cancel her have not [TS]

00:54:27   cancelled school everything God and then [TS]

00:54:30   everybody died . so now they're [TS]

00:54:31   trigger-happy but now and also in their [TS]

00:54:35   rural parts of the of the county where [TS]

00:54:39   in the the buses do sometimes have [TS]

00:54:41   troubles getting through these very [TS]

00:54:44   random back roads and so that's a [TS]

00:54:46   rear-wheel-drive yes but there's four [TS]

00:54:50   wheels in most cases a gigantic and [TS]

00:54:52   their gigantic and tall and skinny which [TS]

00:54:54   is what we've already established is [TS]

00:54:55   exactly what you want I don't know [TS]

00:54:59   they're there and they're an interesting [TS]

00:55:00   breed here there what there was a guy i [TS]

00:55:03   decided to take the one out there [TS]

00:55:05   bring that during our our halloween [TS]

00:55:06   snowstorm this year just to see I was [TS]

00:55:09   still in the process of figuring out [TS]

00:55:10   whether I needed all-wheel drive her [TS]

00:55:11   next car not so here I had a car with [TS]

00:55:15   summer tires and way too much power [TS]

00:55:19   going to the back where it's it's very [TS]

00:55:21   very easy for the for you to spin the [TS]

00:55:25   rear tires of the 1m just by trying to [TS]

00:55:28   go normally it has way too much power [TS]

00:55:30   for for its body and and so I ended up [TS]

00:55:36   so as a result the rear tires I I hope [TS]

00:55:38   mostly from the previous owner the rear [TS]

00:55:41   tires are pretty worn down i would say [TS]

00:55:43   they have gone through at least half of [TS]

00:55:45   their tread of the usable tread so and [TS]

00:55:49   and you can tell there's like if you [TS]

00:55:51   look at the front versus the rears like [TS]

00:55:52   the front fred is way deeper so here i [TS]

00:55:55   have worn down summer tires on a very [TS]

00:55:59   very powerful rear-wheel-drive [TS]

00:56:00   lightweight car and I decided to take it [TS]

00:56:02   out on the road in the snowstorm to see [TS]

00:56:04   you know just quick trip to the grocery [TS]

00:56:05   store us a short route I knew well I [TS]

00:56:08   knew you know what would be the [TS]

00:56:10   challenging parts of it and it turned [TS]

00:56:11   out and my neighborhood is very very [TS]

00:56:13   hilly so I'm going up and down lots of [TS]

00:56:15   hills covered in snow nothing was plowed [TS]

00:56:17   there was no salt it was too early in [TS]

00:56:19   the season we weren't even prepared so [TS]

00:56:20   no plowing no salting nothing and it was [TS]

00:56:23   a little bit warm so the snow is all [TS]

00:56:25   being packed down into it into a slush [TS]

00:56:28   and like a pact / which is pretty much [TS]

00:56:30   the worst case scenario for traction so [TS]

00:56:33   I go start over the grocery store in the [TS]

00:56:37   whole time I'm thinking you know what [TS]

00:56:38   this is pretty good I'm feeling just [TS]

00:56:40   fine with the car handled just fine the [TS]

00:56:42   entire way there and then I pull into [TS]

00:56:45   the grocery store parking lot and go [TS]

00:56:47   sideways just trying to take a turn [TS]

00:56:50   going like from one part of a lot to [TS]

00:56:53   another going down an aisle trying to [TS]

00:56:55   turn my car at five miles an hour [TS]

00:56:59   totally sideways like and stuck how he [TS]

00:57:03   covers rock solid I i had to have [TS]

00:57:06   grocery store employees come out and [TS]

00:57:08   help me they didn't sell shovels I [TS]

00:57:10   couldn't just buy one shovel shovel out [TS]

00:57:12   a few wheels they had to push me out of [TS]

00:57:14   that lot Nazi Party out of greats [TS]

00:57:16   pushing your wheel drive [TS]

00:57:18   it was ridiculously embarrassing Wow [TS]

00:57:21   and then the whole ride home perfect you [TS]

00:57:24   find so it was it was a it went worse [TS]

00:57:27   than I expected when I actually gotten [TS]

00:57:29   that lot from what i understand that i [TS]

00:57:31   was doing a few things wrong number one [TS]

00:57:33   obviously i had the wrong kind of tires [TS]

00:57:35   number to the tires are too worn down [TS]

00:57:37   and number three as Casey pointed out I [TS]

00:57:42   didn't know to turn traction control off [TS]

00:57:45   when you're trying to get out of a stuck [TS]

00:57:47   snowy position so i was doing and I [TS]

00:57:50   tried it try trip starting 2nd or 3rd [TS]

00:57:53   gear at first that didn't really seem to [TS]

00:57:55   help the rear tire just had no grip on [TS]

00:57:57   that surface but I did not try turning [TS]

00:58:00   traction control off so maybe that would [TS]

00:58:02   have helped I don't know probably not [TS]

00:58:04   honestly because you know the tires [TS]

00:58:06   because the wrong type of tire on a very [TS]

00:58:08   light car and blah blah but it was [TS]

00:58:11   sobering to say the least [TS]

00:58:13   however now I decided instead to still [TS]

00:58:16   get a rear-wheel drive car for the next [TS]

00:58:17   car and but here again i mean the the 1m [TS]

00:58:21   and and at least that 1i that has a [TS]

00:58:25   proper limited-slip differential and so [TS]

00:58:28   it didn't open on [TS]

00:58:29   well no but with the traction control [TS]

00:58:30   off it without the the computer trying [TS]

00:58:33   to be smarter than it really is i think [TS]

00:58:35   you would have been just fine but there [TS]

00:58:37   was no tread on the tires and the smell [TS]

00:58:39   okay why did just . just smoothly [TS]

00:58:41   polished the snow energy haha finish [TS]

00:58:44   yeah i mean they're very wide tires that [TS]

00:58:47   is too well in the funny thing is having [TS]

00:58:48   driven marcos 1m i can tell you that [TS]

00:58:51   when I will never forget being in first [TS]

00:58:55   puttering off the line standing on the [TS]

00:58:56   gas with i believe we had the DSC on ya [TS]

00:58:59   and i would let our exactly and the car [TS]

00:59:03   started to jiggle in the back as the [TS]

00:59:05   boost built and eventually started to [TS]

00:59:07   lose traction and this was on a pretty [TS]

00:59:08   cold day but this was a completely dry [TS]

00:59:10   day and it was it was like everything [TS]

00:59:12   reason we're going straight line on a [TS]

00:59:14   drive exactly know that that's exactly [TS]

00:59:16   my point i mean the thing is the thing [TS]

00:59:17   is ridiculous [TS]

00:59:18   yes i'm not the best example for a real [TS]

00:59:21   drive car being good in the snow but i [TS]

00:59:24   will say the entire rest of the drive it [TS]

00:59:26   was great just that parking lot got [TS]

00:59:29   stuck but I [TS]

00:59:31   so stuck that I I know if there was ever [TS]

00:59:34   a time for me to spontaneous really [TS]

00:59:36   spontaneous 1 John siracusa in New York [TS]

00:59:39   like I would have loved for John to pull [TS]

00:59:43   up next to me as he's driving his his [TS]

00:59:46   crappy beat-up civic or whatever it was [TS]

00:59:48   an accord [TS]

00:59:49   I don't according to set it to cars oh [TS]

00:59:51   man alright so two cars both my wife [TS]

00:59:55   works you know right okay so said you [TS]

00:59:58   have to commute to work [TS]

00:59:58   have to commute to work [TS]
