Cortex 22: Statistics Aren't Everything

00:00:00   I don't think that maybe have like just [TS]

00:00:02   a very small handful of shows if that [TS]

00:00:04   which have smaller audiences then way I [TS]

00:00:10   don't know what I'm saying that sentence [TS]

00:00:11   it was not working you gotta start over [TS]

00:00:13   abort abort abort where I with Who am I [TS]

00:00:16   again [TS]

00:00:17   you don't sound so great Mike yeah i've [TS]

00:00:19   been i've had like the worst potentially [TS]

00:00:23   the worst illness i could have ball one [TS]

00:00:25   what is now I need to know what is the [TS]

00:00:27   bar one the ones doing this I could have [TS]

00:00:30   his learning giants who but what do you [TS]

00:00:33   have now I have a throat infection in my [TS]

00:00:36   throat infection that is really damaging [TS]

00:00:38   to my business that is a professional [TS]

00:00:42   hazard [TS]

00:00:42   yeah your line of work sir I'm surprised [TS]

00:00:45   it's taking this long [TS]

00:00:46   you've not had any throat infections or [TS]

00:00:49   throat related illnesses in the entire [TS]

00:00:50   time you've gone you got a full-time [TS]

00:00:52   with podcasting that hasn't happened yet [TS]

00:00:54   this is the first actual real illness [TS]

00:00:56   ipad since I started really like this is [TS]

00:01:00   the first thing that stopped me walking [TS]

00:01:01   I noticed that you were sick enough that [TS]

00:01:03   you were pulling back from some podcasts [TS]

00:01:07   and not doing much work as you normally [TS]

00:01:09   would on any which is yeah that's I've [TS]

00:01:13   really liked to have been sick for maybe [TS]

00:01:16   four or five days and I've done like [TS]

00:01:18   some work one half day but I've dragged [TS]

00:01:23   you out of bed to record cortex here you [TS]

00:01:27   even make it sound I mean I need to tell [TS]

00:01:29   the listeners how nice you've been to me [TS]

00:01:31   the last few days I know it's breaking [TS]

00:01:34   your character you know that you're not [TS]

00:01:37   just a robot who you have actually been [TS]

00:01:39   very nice to me [TS]

00:01:40   you've been very accommodating it's [TS]

00:01:43   actually in character because it's much [TS]

00:01:45   less about you getting better and much [TS]

00:01:47   more about like oh I don't have to [TS]

00:01:48   record an episode this week I feel like [TS]

00:01:51   you should see the thing I feel like [TS]

00:01:52   you're trying to give the impression i [TS]

00:01:54   like to believe that you genuinely care [TS]

00:01:56   I happy to let you believe it [TS]

00:01:59   I tell you what though it's finished [TS]

00:02:04   range to actually be kind of in bed sick [TS]

00:02:08   not working [TS]

00:02:09   who this is the face of the first time [TS]

00:02:11   that I've done this and it reminds me a [TS]

00:02:14   little bit more of what it was like to [TS]

00:02:16   work a job you know how so [TS]

00:02:18   because when you work for yourself you [TS]

00:02:21   kind of you do things you wouldn't [TS]

00:02:22   otherwise do like you work on your [TS]

00:02:24   holidays you know who you if you're if [TS]

00:02:28   you've got a sore throat or you've got a [TS]

00:02:29   stomachache or something then maybe you [TS]

00:02:31   you are still more likely to just put up [TS]

00:02:33   with it then [TS]

00:02:34   where previous you might be like a dove [TS]

00:02:36   great today I'm not going to go to work [TS]

00:02:37   right but now it's like no I can't work [TS]

00:02:42   and and that has been kind of a real [TS]

00:02:43   peculiar thing for me like I've had [TS]

00:02:46   stuff coming in of any emails come in [TS]

00:02:47   and see what they are like I just can't [TS]

00:02:49   do this but there's been some things [TS]

00:02:51   I've needed to do with and I've been [TS]

00:02:53   sending emails to be brown like I'm [TS]

00:02:54   gonna have to get back to you in a few [TS]

00:02:55   days because I'm not really with it [TS]

00:02:58   right now and I've been genuinely [TS]

00:03:00   worried that I would agree to something [TS]

00:03:02   or say something that would be bad [TS]

00:03:05   like I have to send a few emails to [TS]

00:03:07   sponsors and stuff to let them know that [TS]

00:03:09   some of the shows are going to be late [TS]

00:03:10   and I read the emails back and it was [TS]

00:03:13   like they were written by a [TS]

00:03:14   nine-year-old like I don't know why but [TS]

00:03:17   they were just stitch is written so [TS]

00:03:19   badly and I was like okay I'm very [TS]

00:03:22   pleased i decided to take a few days to [TS]

00:03:25   just rest [TS]

00:03:26   yeah so this wasn't the time to be [TS]

00:03:28   renegotiating quarterly rates [TS]

00:03:30   no no answer although I'm sorry to tell [TS]

00:03:33   you that last one is now past [TS]

00:03:36   twenty-five thousand episode let's look [TS]

00:03:37   at it looks like i need to update some [TS]

00:03:40   spreadsheets in mind that if it's going [TS]

00:03:42   to change something [TS]

00:03:43   yeah I've limited to the bottom of the [TS]

00:03:45   list I'm not just merely sitting in [TS]

00:03:47   anymore because we have to start a whole [TS]

00:03:49   brand-new list i can't remember the [TS]

00:03:53   first time that I was really sick after [TS]

00:03:56   getting self-employed but I mean what [TS]

00:03:59   one of the things is since I used to be [TS]

00:04:01   a teacher i used to get sick way more [TS]

00:04:03   because you're exposed to kids all the [TS]

00:04:05   time which are super germany and so just [TS]

00:04:07   like getting throat infections are just [TS]

00:04:09   getting sick with a much more frequent [TS]

00:04:11   occurrence and you're talkin all day you [TS]

00:04:13   know you [TS]

00:04:13   putting stress on those those parts of [TS]

00:04:15   your body as well yeah you did you busy [TS]

00:04:17   all day you're interacting with people [TS]

00:04:18   and I just it's it's unavoidable so it [TS]

00:04:21   seems like since i became self employed [TS]

00:04:22   i am i'm sick much much less frequently [TS]

00:04:26   but i am aware of the same thing at as [TS]

00:04:29   you which is it just like in some ways [TS]

00:04:32   when you're sick and you have a regular [TS]

00:04:34   job [TS]

00:04:34   it's like a snow day right he's like a [TS]

00:04:36   grown-up snow days like you know what I [TS]

00:04:38   don't feel very well today maybe I can't [TS]

00:04:41   leave the house and I cuz I'm just I'm [TS]

00:04:43   not doing well but in comparison to [TS]

00:04:46   having to go into work this is a holiday [TS]

00:04:49   that has been a weird part of me like [TS]

00:04:51   once I once I kind of settled into my [TS]

00:04:55   office where I was like whilst I feel [TS]

00:04:58   terrible mean it's kind of nice to just [TS]

00:05:00   lay in bed and one making a murderer who [TS]

00:05:04   write which I watched over two days [TS]

00:05:06   good that's the only way to watch it's [TS]

00:05:08   the only way to do it relaxing is the [TS]

00:05:10   wrong word because I horrible i actually [TS]

00:05:12   haven't felt this ill years I can't [TS]

00:05:15   remember the last time I felt this bad [TS]

00:05:16   like not in my adult life anyway and so [TS]

00:05:19   I've not atrocious but they're still win [TS]

00:05:22   this part where it's like this is [TS]

00:05:24   slightly different to regular but i have [TS]

00:05:27   I I want to come back to this in a [TS]

00:05:28   minute but there was one thing like you [TS]

00:05:29   saying about getting sick as a as a [TS]

00:05:32   teacher which makes sense [TS]

00:05:33   no sitting in the doctor's like Howard [TS]

00:05:35   doctors how how are they alive like all [TS]

00:05:41   day they are seeing sick people right I [TS]

00:05:44   don't understand how dr. stay healthy [TS]

00:05:47   I mean I'd be curious to know but my [TS]

00:05:51   presumption is that they don't my [TS]

00:05:53   presumption is that doctors are are in [TS]

00:05:55   an even worse position than teachers are [TS]

00:05:57   I bet doctors take an enormous amount of [TS]

00:05:59   sick time like they get sick much more [TS]

00:06:01   than the general population they just [TS]

00:06:03   have to it they cannot button and then I [TS]

00:06:05   wonder is this some kind of like special [TS]

00:06:07   medication to take it they keep the good [TS]

00:06:10   stuff themselves do the cure all ills [TS]

00:06:14   yeah and that's one of the things that [TS]

00:06:15   you get with your doctor's license is [TS]

00:06:17   awesome is also initiation into the [TS]

00:06:18   Brotherhood of good medicine link when [TS]

00:06:20   tell anybody else about like to give you [TS]

00:06:23   a little note and you could give you a [TS]

00:06:24   brown envelope [TS]

00:06:25   so you just take one of these one time [TS]

00:06:27   you set that but i think the general [TS]

00:06:31   population feels like Oh doctors don't [TS]

00:06:33   seem like they're sick but it's a [TS]

00:06:34   selection bias because you're only able [TS]

00:06:36   to make an appointment with the doctor [TS]

00:06:38   when they're there right so you always [TS]

00:06:40   see the doctor when the doctor is [TS]

00:06:41   healthy and you feel like why doctors [TS]

00:06:42   are always healthy how are they not take [TS]

00:06:43   all the time I bet they actually are [TS]

00:06:45   they have to be its she has to be like [TS]

00:06:48   that you can't not then they see sick [TS]

00:06:50   people like that is all they do they [TS]

00:06:52   just talked to sick people they touch [TS]

00:06:54   sick people look but don't touch people [TS]

00:07:00   most of the time [TS]

00:07:01   11 let's move on this is this is getting [TS]

00:07:04   too much that you're looking at staying [TS]

00:07:06   in bed [TS]

00:07:07   one of the things i think of I've [TS]

00:07:10   realized this time more than ever it's [TS]

00:07:12   kind of a like I am in the kind of [TS]

00:07:14   situation I men from from a [TS]

00:07:16   self-employed perspective I kind of work [TS]

00:07:19   in a small company right like does this [TS]

00:07:21   mean Stephen and there's a bunch of [TS]

00:07:22   other people who do multiple different [TS]

00:07:25   things you know like hosts and we have [TS]

00:07:27   people that help out over things kind of [TS]

00:07:29   like the hosts take on something [TS]

00:07:30   additional responsibilities depend on [TS]

00:07:31   the shows that they do but it hasn't [TS]

00:07:34   been an issue for me um people filled in [TS]

00:07:37   for me that kind of stuff and it's been [TS]

00:07:40   nice to know that like i have this [TS]

00:07:42   system around me that I didn't really [TS]

00:07:44   know before cuz I've never needed it or [TS]

00:07:46   felt like I needed to use it feels like [TS]

00:07:49   we're all everybody's always kind of [TS]

00:07:50   helping each other out like you find [TS]

00:07:52   busy with something or Stephen busy with [TS]

00:07:54   something or whatever we might step in [TS]

00:07:56   for each other but this has been like a [TS]

00:07:58   week of me just not doing anything and [TS]

00:08:00   its last I checked the business and [TS]

00:08:04   crumbled to pieces [TS]

00:08:05   you know yeah this is your first test of [TS]

00:08:09   a bit of a support system [TS]

00:08:10   yeah with the tiny company that you have [TS]

00:08:13   built and its really nice to know that [TS]

00:08:15   it's worked which made me think of you [TS]

00:08:17   all up there in your little ivory tower [TS]

00:08:21   of 10 what do you do when you get sick [TS]

00:08:26   I mean the answer is I don't work and [TS]

00:08:30   everything comes to an absolute grinding [TS]

00:08:33   halt like this there's no there's no way [TS]

00:08:36   around that it's actually just i was i [TS]

00:08:40   was pretty sick for a couple days a few [TS]

00:08:42   weeks ago and it was a similar thing [TS]

00:08:45   like okay well nothing's going to happen [TS]

00:08:48   now and nothing I can do about that is [TS]

00:08:51   totally fine [TS]

00:08:52   yeah i think it's maybe less of an issue [TS]

00:08:54   because of the way that local businesses [TS]

00:08:56   are made up right yeah the way that our [TS]

00:08:58   business works in like with the show [TS]

00:09:00   this has to continue to be made for [TS]

00:09:03   money to be made right because of the [TS]

00:09:05   way that the our advertising comes in [TS]

00:09:07   but it's different with YouTube right [TS]

00:09:09   the videos that are there not doesn't [TS]

00:09:11   make as much money as if you're putting [TS]

00:09:13   out new ones but they still generate [TS]

00:09:14   money [TS]

00:09:15   yeah the that is definitely one thing [TS]

00:09:18   that I like about having the youtube [TS]

00:09:21   videos up on YouTube is it provides a [TS]

00:09:24   certain amount of semi passive income i [TS]

00:09:29   haven't tested i haven't tested too long [TS]

00:09:31   i mean there has to be there has to be [TS]

00:09:33   some kind of half-life for if I don't [TS]

00:09:37   upload videos in a year the the average [TS]

00:09:40   daily views have to be going down i [TS]

00:09:42   think the worst thing you could do is [TS]

00:09:44   think about trying to test that you [TS]

00:09:46   pushed it too far for like a year [TS]

00:09:49   yeah if I'm sick [TS]

00:09:54   it's not really a huge deal because I [TS]

00:09:59   intentionally try to remove as many [TS]

00:10:01   deadlines from my business as possible [TS]

00:10:04   which is one of the reasons why cortex [TS]

00:10:07   is always slightly annoying to me [TS]

00:10:08   because you and your schedules and your [TS]

00:10:10   deadlines it's like what is this thing [TS]

00:10:12   in my life I have to be here at a time [TS]

00:10:14   it's got it like Mike you know you're [TS]

00:10:16   just so insistent about this because [TS]

00:10:18   everything else is likely that you know [TS]

00:10:21   hello internet will get out when it [TS]

00:10:22   comes out when the video available when [TS]

00:10:25   it's done you know like that's that's [TS]

00:10:26   how I try to arrange things I feel like [TS]

00:10:28   you must have known that this was going [TS]

00:10:30   to be the case when we started this or [TS]

00:10:32   at least you feel you thought you could [TS]

00:10:34   change me [TS]

00:10:35   yeah i don't i don't know what i was [TS]

00:10:37   thinking back then i was probably sick [TS]

00:10:38   when we first started talking about [TS]

00:10:40   doing this and that's how you got me to [TS]

00:10:41   agree there's something I think about is [TS]

00:10:43   is like I'm just I'm just really aware [TS]

00:10:44   that deadlines and me we don't get along [TS]

00:10:47   I know they're I know there's a whole [TS]

00:10:49   very large group of people who always [TS]

00:10:51   talk about how they can possibly get [TS]

00:10:53   anything done unless they have deadlines [TS]

00:10:55   to motivate them and I find that I am [TS]

00:10:57   just the absolute reverse that the more [TS]

00:11:00   deadlines there are in my life the less [TS]

00:11:03   i end up tending to work like deadlines [TS]

00:11:05   are anti motivators for me [TS]

00:11:07   oh I hate deadlines but I don't think of [TS]

00:11:09   the schedules and deadlines it doesn't [TS]

00:11:11   deadlines eat got sponsors you got [TS]

00:11:14   people waiting for you there deadlines [TS]

00:11:16   deadlines built into that [TS]

00:11:17   yeah i mean i can see why you would seem [TS]

00:11:19   like that but to me it's just the [TS]

00:11:21   knowing that if i didn't have these [TS]

00:11:22   things on a calendar there would never [TS]

00:11:24   be anything them that's that's a bit of [TS]

00:11:26   a that's a bit of a different thing but [TS]

00:11:28   but anyway like I guess the point that I [TS]

00:11:31   was just trying to get it like this is [TS]

00:11:32   this sort of goes along with being sick [TS]

00:11:34   and one of the best changes i made for [TS]

00:11:39   my own psychological life in the history [TS]

00:11:43   of my own self employment here was when [TS]

00:11:45   patreon bought out subbable which was [TS]

00:11:48   the platform that was previously using [TS]

00:11:50   to do crowdfunding when that transition [TS]

00:11:53   happen i had an opportunity to change [TS]

00:11:55   from automatic monthly billing of the [TS]

00:12:01   people who are supporting my youtube [TS]

00:12:02   channel to changing that too only [TS]

00:12:05   manually building them when i actually [TS]

00:12:09   upload what I considered to be a quote [TS]

00:12:12   real video whatever that happens in my [TS]

00:12:14   head and I can see how much that that [TS]

00:12:17   will help you and I mean here's the [TS]

00:12:19   thing like like there is there is no [TS]

00:12:21   doubt that i made more money under the [TS]

00:12:23   old system preferences like [TS]

00:12:25   month-by-month like you're automatically [TS]

00:12:27   building someone but holy God that just [TS]

00:12:30   add an enormous amount of stress and [TS]

00:12:33   anxiety to my life that I really I [TS]

00:12:35   really did not want and and so like like [TS]

00:12:39   man that was I debated it for a little [TS]

00:12:42   while whether or not to make that change [TS]

00:12:43   and I am so happy I made that change [TS]

00:12:46   because it just it felt like it [TS]

00:12:47   eliminated this car [TS]

00:12:49   instant deadline for my life it made [TS]

00:12:51   every summer feel really guilty if i was [TS]

00:12:54   traveling with family instead of working [TS]

00:12:55   on other stuff because you just know [TS]

00:12:57   like man when the 30th rolls around [TS]

00:12:58   people are going to get billed whether [TS]

00:13:00   you made something or not like if you [TS]

00:13:02   got it up in time and it's just hated [TS]

00:13:04   that so I am so happy to have it this [TS]

00:13:06   way now did you feel kind of guilty [TS]

00:13:09   well i mean if people knew what they [TS]

00:13:11   like there was no guarantee that there [TS]

00:13:13   was a video being made [TS]

00:13:15   yeah yeah it's like guilt with guilt is [TS]

00:13:17   not the correct feeling it was just a [TS]

00:13:19   constant source of anxiety [TS]

00:13:21   yeah and we've we've talked about this [TS]

00:13:23   before right which is that when you were [TS]

00:13:24   working for yourself it is very hard to [TS]

00:13:26   separate when you're working from when [TS]

00:13:29   you're not working in a personal time [TS]

00:13:31   from the business time it's very hard to [TS]

00:13:33   do anyway which is almost certainly why [TS]

00:13:35   when you were laying in bed [TS]

00:13:37   partly on death's door part of you was [TS]

00:13:39   also thinking this is kind of nice [TS]

00:13:41   because i'm forced to not work [TS]

00:13:43   yeah like something else is forcing you [TS]

00:13:45   to let go there was nothing I could do [TS]

00:13:48   so it's like you can just not worry [TS]

00:13:49   about it for a few days because you have [TS]

00:13:51   no option [TS]

00:13:52   I can't get up and try and go to that [TS]

00:13:54   computer you will fold out before you [TS]

00:13:56   get there you're gonna make a mess you [TS]

00:13:58   know it's gonna be awful and and so when [TS]

00:14:04   the building was just monthly anytime [TS]

00:14:09   like as soon as the first of the month [TS]

00:14:11   rolled around I just always had this [TS]

00:14:13   anxious feeling of like I have to try to [TS]

00:14:15   get something up now and until I have [TS]

00:14:18   something up in this month it made it [TS]

00:14:20   just impossible to not be thinking about [TS]

00:14:23   work and not in a knot like a productive [TS]

00:14:25   way like Oh on this amazing machine like [TS]

00:14:27   doing all this work because i have this [TS]

00:14:29   gun to my head every month it was just [TS]

00:14:31   horrific unwelcome stress-inducing [TS]

00:14:34   anxiety and then in situations like what [TS]

00:14:37   we're talking about now if there was a [TS]

00:14:39   time when I just couldn't work or like [TS]

00:14:41   family needed me or wanted me to be [TS]

00:14:43   available or was sick or something it [TS]

00:14:44   was just awful like I really hated it so [TS]

00:14:46   his the case i was very happy to switch [TS]

00:14:49   to a system is like I will make less [TS]

00:14:51   money under this new system and i will [TS]

00:14:52   be so much happier [TS]

00:14:54   let me tell you the the real benefit for [TS]

00:14:58   this illness though because I mama on [TS]

00:15:01   the diet right now [TS]

00:15:02   right and control it better now yeah [TS]

00:15:04   lost six pounds this week illness is [TS]

00:15:07   great for weight loss i have also found [TS]

00:15:08   yeah i am sitting proud moment on the [TS]

00:15:13   scales and he weighed myself yesterday I [TS]

00:15:16   was like yes illness way to go with this [TS]

00:15:19   is amazing i should get infected more [TS]

00:15:21   often so proud of you [TS]

00:15:24   well yeah if it brought me and many [TS]

00:15:27   weeks ahead i'm very happy about that [TS]

00:15:30   and I hope that I can keep this this way [TS]

00:15:33   as it is [TS]

00:18:01   so you hit a milestone i think it was [TS]

00:18:04   last week sometime and you you cross 2 [TS]

00:18:08   million YouTube subscribers [TS]

00:18:10   yeah just a course congratulations like [TS]

00:18:12   I have and will congratulate you but you [TS]

00:18:15   see it's something like that do you [TS]

00:18:17   is it a badge of honor 2 million i I'm [TS]

00:18:21   glad the numbers going up once you hit [TS]

00:18:23   one but 1,000,000 hooray but like then [TS]

00:18:25   he is it like the next one is it five [TS]

00:18:26   like always every million as exciting as [TS]

00:18:29   the first million if I could start over [TS]

00:18:32   again I would celebrate every doubling [TS]

00:18:35   from one subscriber that's what we do [TS]

00:18:40   manorville celebration just at the [TS]

00:18:43   beginning though [TS]

00:18:44   yeah it's that it starts to get sad [TS]

00:18:46   quite quickly [TS]

00:18:48   that's me feels like the much more [TS]

00:18:49   natural celebration point is a doubling [TS]

00:18:51   doubling its not based on any number [TS]

00:18:53   system is just it's ok you have twice as [TS]

00:18:55   many as you had last time that you had [TS]

00:18:57   the celebration that's that seems like [TS]

00:18:59   the way it should be [TS]

00:19:00   but this is not to belittle two million [TS]

00:19:02   right because that is like cave is one [TS]

00:19:04   of those numbers you know that you can't [TS]

00:19:07   even comprehend [TS]

00:19:09   yeah it just means nothing it's just so [TS]

00:19:11   big like okay it's a population right [TS]

00:19:13   it's not even a number at this point [TS]

00:19:15   like you can't group that amount of [TS]

00:19:17   people together [TS]

00:19:18   look it's it's incredible number but [TS]

00:19:21   it's like you know it's the whole thing [TS]

00:19:22   you end up getting and I had this a lot [TS]

00:19:26   when working in finance you get numb to [TS]

00:19:28   know [TS]

00:19:28   was after your around big numbers for a [TS]

00:19:30   while I didn't you see these huge [TS]

00:19:32   numbers and it doesn't really mean [TS]

00:19:33   anything anymore [TS]

00:19:34   can you work in a bank so you must have [TS]

00:19:37   just seen numbers with crazy zeros on [TS]

00:19:40   the end of them [TS]

00:19:40   yeah okay billion here a billion there [TS]

00:19:43   it starts adding up to be real money [TS]

00:19:45   after a while like I just wanted because [TS]

00:19:47   obviously i imagine that when you hit 1 [TS]

00:19:49   million that was a real cause for [TS]

00:19:51   celebration [TS]

00:19:52   I've got to imagine that must have felt [TS]

00:19:54   like you really achieved something [TS]

00:19:57   ok so yes and no but this this starts to [TS]

00:20:02   get into some of the particulars about [TS]

00:20:05   like the way you tube does this and so [TS]

00:20:09   yes I was super glad to hit a million [TS]

00:20:12   subscribers but it's been very clear [TS]

00:20:17   over the time that I've been doing this [TS]

00:20:20   that I don't know you YouTube algorithms [TS]

00:20:24   or like the way the system works has [TS]

00:20:27   changed and so it's very hard to have a [TS]

00:20:29   real idea of this thing that I have a [TS]

00:20:33   million of now is the same as when I had [TS]

00:20:36   200,000 of it just x 5 yeah like I don't [TS]

00:20:40   know how much you can explain this but [TS]

00:20:42   the longer that mean you've been working [TS]

00:20:44   together the more attention i paid to [TS]

00:20:46   youtube I watch my youtube videos and I [TS]

00:20:48   just pay more attention to what kind of [TS]

00:20:50   going on there who and I look at [TS]

00:20:52   people's numbers more and your numbers [TS]

00:20:56   seem very atypical to what I see with [TS]

00:21:00   other people you know I don't watch very [TS]

00:21:02   much youtube so you need to explain to [TS]

00:21:03   hear what you mean by that [TS]

00:21:05   so like you have two million YouTube [TS]

00:21:07   subscribers em and your videos very [TS]

00:21:10   frequently top 1 million and more you [TS]

00:21:14   put out a video and it's like a million [TS]

00:21:17   or two million views [TS]

00:21:18   you know depending on how popular the [TS]

00:21:20   video gets you have something up way [TS]

00:21:22   more than that but on average it seems [TS]

00:21:25   like it you get at least fifty percent [TS]

00:21:27   that number [TS]

00:21:28   yeah i'd say like a million feels like [TS]

00:21:30   an average video [TS]

00:21:32   yeah if I got if I got lower than [TS]

00:21:34   800,000 I'd be sad if i get more than [TS]

00:21:37   one [TS]

00:21:37   half million I'd be I'd be pleasantly [TS]

00:21:39   surprised so like a million is like your [TS]

00:21:42   average right looking at that but I look [TS]

00:21:45   at people now and I see like two million [TS]

00:21:47   subscribers hundred thousand views like [TS]

00:21:50   200,000 views are half a million who or [TS]

00:21:53   icy like someone was 16 million [TS]

00:21:56   subscribers and the videos get three [TS]

00:21:58   million views or people that have the [TS]

00:22:01   same subscribers you and their videos [TS]

00:22:03   are like in the tens of thousands and I [TS]

00:22:05   don't feel like I fully understand how [TS]

00:22:08   shoot works [TS]

00:22:10   yeah because I know as a person coming [TS]

00:22:12   to youtube if i click that subscribe [TS]

00:22:14   button [TS]

00:22:15   I want to watch the majority of videos [TS]

00:22:18   that are going to come in like I don't [TS]

00:22:20   subscribe to a lot of channels there [TS]

00:22:22   somewhere i subscribe to them and I pick [TS]

00:22:23   and choose but it just seems that there [TS]

00:22:27   is a real kind of disparity amongst the [TS]

00:22:31   accounts that i look at between what [TS]

00:22:34   those two numbers mean in a way that [TS]

00:22:37   doesn't really seem to make sense in my [TS]

00:22:39   brain like because I'm coming at it from [TS]

00:22:41   podcast it's and it's even harder to [TS]

00:22:43   tell subscribes and downloads and [TS]

00:22:45   podcasting but our numbers stay pretty [TS]

00:22:47   stable and that really doesn't seem to [TS]

00:22:49   be the way that YouTube works at all [TS]

00:22:52   when i started with YouTube it was very [TS]

00:22:54   clear with a subscriber meant it meant [TS]

00:22:58   someone had pressed that button and the [TS]

00:23:00   way youtube was set up when that person [TS]

00:23:02   went back to YouTube they would see a [TS]

00:23:04   list of all of the channels that they [TS]

00:23:06   had subscribed to and the newest video [TS]

00:23:08   from those channels so it's very very [TS]

00:23:11   obvious and very easy to see new stuff [TS]

00:23:14   as it was coming in but over time into [TS]

00:23:18   the annoyance of the great many people [TS]

00:23:20   youtube like every other company that [TS]

00:23:22   does this kind of thing has facebook [TS]

00:23:25   eyes the experience meaning that you [TS]

00:23:30   might like on facebook you might follow [TS]

00:23:33   people but Facebook is in the business [TS]

00:23:35   of deciding for you what you want to see [TS]

00:23:39   and so they use algorithms to determine [TS]

00:23:42   oh you seem to interact with this person [TS]

00:23:44   a lot so we're going to show you more of [TS]

00:23:46   their stuff and you and you don't see [TS]

00:23:48   you don't interact with this person as [TS]

00:23:50   much so we're going to show [TS]

00:23:51   you less like Facebook does that YouTube [TS]

00:23:54   does that I'm getting the impression [TS]

00:23:56   from some angry people on Twitter that [TS]

00:23:58   twitter has made some motions in the [TS]

00:23:59   past few days towards this this is like [TS]

00:24:02   an inevitable law of large media [TS]

00:24:05   companies that they they want to switch [TS]

00:24:08   from systems where you are telling them [TS]

00:24:10   how you want to see things two systems [TS]

00:24:12   where they are algorithmically [TS]

00:24:14   determining for you [TS]

00:24:17   what you're going to see and so now when [TS]

00:24:20   people log onto youtube there's the they [TS]

00:24:22   have a things collect what to watch and [TS]

00:24:24   that is YouTube's suggestions about what [TS]

00:24:27   you want to see i'm going to say that [TS]

00:24:29   that what to watch [TS]

00:24:30   I do watch a lot of videos that come [TS]

00:24:32   from that the algorithm does work like I [TS]

00:24:36   find lots of videos that i want to see [TS]

00:24:38   from that suggestion [TS]

00:24:41   oh yeah don't get me wrong youtube has [TS]

00:24:44   some incredibly smart people working on [TS]

00:24:49   that algorithm [TS]

00:24:51   have you heard of google yeah it's like [TS]

00:24:53   I'm not saying that it's bad and what it [TS]

00:24:56   does [TS]

00:24:57   I'm just saying it's a different system [TS]

00:24:59   and i genuinely think that for something [TS]

00:25:02   like YouTube you can argue that it's a [TS]

00:25:04   better system do I like it better as a [TS]

00:25:06   creator [TS]

00:25:07   no but does your average viewer probably [TS]

00:25:11   watch more YouTube because of their [TS]

00:25:13   algorithmic system they have to I'd be [TS]

00:25:16   shocked if if they don't [TS]

00:25:18   youtube is obsessed with this notion of [TS]

00:25:20   watch time like how much time do people [TS]

00:25:22   spend on the site and he dedicate [TS]

00:25:25   enormous computing resources and a/b [TS]

00:25:28   testing and all kinds of stuff to figure [TS]

00:25:30   out like what videos keep people on the [TS]

00:25:33   site longer so I do not doubt in the [TS]

00:25:35   slightest that it is effective but [TS]

00:25:37   because of that the way I view the [TS]

00:25:40   subscriber button now is not go this [TS]

00:25:43   person has subscribed to my channel and [TS]

00:25:46   they will see every one of my videos [TS]

00:25:49   the subscriber button now is you sending [TS]

00:25:53   a signal to the algorithm and the [TS]

00:25:57   algorithm is going to decide how [TS]

00:25:59   important it considers that signal to be [TS]

00:26:00   and so I mean my guess is that when you [TS]

00:26:04   see [TS]

00:26:04   some really weird subscriber numbers [TS]

00:26:07   like you do sometimes come across people [TS]

00:26:09   who seem to have subscribers in the [TS]

00:26:11   millions and view counts in like the [TS]

00:26:13   tens or twenties thousands and it's like [TS]

00:26:16   what is that like what's going on there [TS]

00:26:18   and I think that's a case of the [TS]

00:26:21   algorithm has decided that the people [TS]

00:26:23   who have subscribed to this channel are [TS]

00:26:25   not actually interested in seeing this [TS]

00:26:28   channels videos that's what's happening [TS]

00:26:30   there [TS]

00:26:31   that's why i put just very little mental [TS]

00:26:36   emphasis now on those subscriber numbers [TS]

00:26:38   like it's interesting i'm glad when it [TS]

00:26:40   goes up [TS]

00:26:42   it's notable when I cross a big barrier [TS]

00:26:44   but I used to be super obsessed with the [TS]

00:26:46   subscriber numbers because it used to [TS]

00:26:48   mean like when i press that publish [TS]

00:26:50   button X number of people are going to [TS]

00:26:53   see this as a new thing and now i know [TS]

00:26:56   that when i press that button [TS]

00:26:58   what really happens is almost certainly [TS]

00:27:00   youtube just like Facebook does is like [TS]

00:27:04   testing with a random subsection of the [TS]

00:27:06   number of people who subscribe to me to [TS]

00:27:08   see how many people click on it and then [TS]

00:27:10   based on that it might recommend the [TS]

00:27:12   video to a larger subsection of the [TS]

00:27:14   number of people who subscribe to me [TS]

00:27:15   like that's kind of what I presume is [TS]

00:27:16   going on behind you know background and [TS]

00:27:19   that's just a totally different feeling [TS]

00:27:21   that like man when i press this button 2 [TS]

00:27:23   million people are going to see a thing [TS]

00:27:25   that's not what happens and so it makes [TS]

00:27:27   that two million number feel very [TS]

00:27:29   different now it's almost like that [TS]

00:27:31   number is and a theoretical upper [TS]

00:27:34   threshold of market exposure i think [TS]

00:27:37   that's that's where the subscriber [TS]

00:27:38   number is in some ways so if the numbers [TS]

00:27:40   going up it's an indication to you there [TS]

00:27:43   are more people to see it potentially to [TS]

00:27:46   see it yeah but its day these things do [TS]

00:27:48   not move in correlation to each other [TS]

00:27:50   they don't necessarily move a [TS]

00:27:51   correlation to each other now yeah I i [TS]

00:27:53   can very easily imagine that the that [TS]

00:27:56   some channels would have a situation [TS]

00:27:57   where people love to subscribe to that [TS]

00:27:59   channel but the algorithm consistently [TS]

00:28:01   learned like okay but they don't [TS]

00:28:02   actually interact with the videos in the [TS]

00:28:05   way that I expect and so I just want [TS]

00:28:06   every show them very many videos from [TS]

00:28:08   this channel like other stuff will [TS]

00:28:09   always take over because what it seemed [TS]

00:28:11   seeming to be coming clear to me that [TS]

00:28:14   doesn't really seem to be like a [TS]

00:28:16   plentiful threshold [TS]

00:28:18   that you have to hit two hit a certain [TS]

00:28:20   level like if you cross a million then [TS]

00:28:24   your views one will always be X could do [TS]

00:28:28   it doesn't feel like that makes any [TS]

00:28:29   sense it's just so confusing to me [TS]

00:28:31   because it must mean is it was you do [TS]

00:28:34   you know where the people are coming [TS]

00:28:36   from like I don't know what YouTube [TS]

00:28:37   statistics are like I do you know that [TS]

00:28:39   like a lot of these people aren't [TS]

00:28:42   subscribers and you're actually getting [TS]

00:28:44   a lot of like in bed watches from [TS]

00:28:47   whatever Daily Mail website or something [TS]

00:28:50   the YouTube analytics are pretty good [TS]

00:28:51   that they give you some sense of if [TS]

00:28:54   people are coming from external sites [TS]

00:28:56   there's always the issue of anyone who [TS]

00:29:00   runs analytics programs knows that you [TS]

00:29:01   have this is big catch-all category like [TS]

00:29:04   direct referrals where you have no idea [TS]

00:29:06   like really where the person came from [TS]

00:29:07   you just know that they hit a URL that [TS]

00:29:09   that sent them there YouTube does the [TS]

00:29:11   best that it can but I always whenever I [TS]

00:29:15   have a chance to talk to anybody who [TS]

00:29:17   works at youtube I would I want to know [TS]

00:29:19   is how many of my subscribers saw this [TS]

00:29:24   on their screen when they went to the [TS]

00:29:27   what to watch section on YouTube are [TS]

00:29:30   like I want to know what percent of [TS]

00:29:32   people were even exposed to this or what [TS]

00:29:35   percent of my subscribers have asked for [TS]

00:29:38   email alerts that's the one number they [TS]

00:29:40   don't want to give you and I can totally [TS]

00:29:41   understand from YouTube's perspective [TS]

00:29:43   why they don't want to do that they [TS]

00:29:45   don't want channels i imagine being [TS]

00:29:46   quite irritated to know like what do you [TS]

00:29:48   mean you only tested this with one [TS]

00:29:49   percent of my audience and then sent it [TS]

00:29:51   out to five percent of my audience [TS]

00:29:53   because it didn't do very well like I [TS]

00:29:54   think people would get quite angry about [TS]

00:29:57   that if you know if that's what's going [TS]

00:29:59   on here that stuff and it's like it [TS]

00:30:01   makes me it makes my skin crawl [TS]

00:30:03   well it makes your skin crawl because [TS]

00:30:06   Facebook's whole business model is [TS]

00:30:07   putting those numbers right in your face [TS]

00:30:09   like with when i upload something on the [TS]

00:30:12   cgpgrey facebook page Facebook is always [TS]

00:30:16   like really happy to let you know like [TS]

00:30:17   oh you have 20,000 fans on facebook we [TS]

00:30:21   sent this to a hundred of them would you [TS]

00:30:23   like to pay as more money to send it to [TS]

00:30:25   more of the people who are fans of your [TS]

00:30:28   page just because like I don't work in [TS]

00:30:30   that world because i assume that [TS]

00:30:32   maybe youtube is doing something like [TS]

00:30:33   that as well right which is maybe right [TS]

00:30:36   which is why you don't get all of the [TS]

00:30:38   two million every time right yeah and [TS]

00:30:41   and it's just the difference for me and [TS]

00:30:43   you know with you wish the podcast as [TS]

00:30:45   well is that people that click the [TS]

00:30:47   button to subscribe to our shows they [TS]

00:30:49   get every episode great choose what i [TS]

00:30:52   listen to it like it comes to them who [TS]

00:30:54   and the but then that's like the crazy [TS]

00:30:56   things like of course it does [TS]

00:30:58   you've you've shown the intention you [TS]

00:31:02   you press the button and then it comes [TS]

00:31:04   to you like they're just all these weird [TS]

00:31:06   things that YouTube seem to do like [TS]

00:31:08   sometimes I get push notifications for [TS]

00:31:11   people like like I have a couple of [TS]

00:31:13   channels that I like to get notified [TS]

00:31:15   about when a new video posts [TS]

00:31:17   sometimes I don't get those [TS]

00:31:18   notifications right sex and that was [TS]

00:31:21   like what are you doing like I've got an [TS]

00:31:23   extra step now in trying to ensure that [TS]

00:31:27   i see these videos but you're still not [TS]

00:31:30   telling me about them that that one like [TS]

00:31:31   I can't wrap my head around there was [TS]

00:31:33   this one time i think i was looking for [TS]

00:31:36   some pictures the other day and came [TS]

00:31:37   across the other day i got this weird [TS]

00:31:39   you ever this I got this like really [TS]

00:31:40   weird push notification was like see [TS]

00:31:42   latest from cgpgrey and you haven't [TS]

00:31:44   uploaded in flex six weeks [TS]

00:31:46   do you remember that oh yeah that's [TS]

00:31:48   right that's right you just add the blue [TS]

00:31:49   go gotta push notification about [TS]

00:31:51   checkout see to creatively this video [TS]

00:31:53   you know because they're doing some kind [TS]

00:31:55   of tests right yeah that's my assumption [TS]

00:31:58   here right like you you have just fallen [TS]

00:32:00   into the random five percent that [TS]

00:32:02   they're doing a test on and that's why [TS]

00:32:04   you gotta push notification that is like [TS]

00:32:06   just the the ongoing like weirdness of [TS]

00:32:09   living inside of somebody else's system [TS]

00:32:12   yeah all of this is and and this is part [TS]

00:32:15   of like a broader statistics see kind of [TS]

00:32:18   discussion on to talk to you about [TS]

00:32:20   because there are some significant [TS]

00:32:22   differences in the way that analytics [TS]

00:32:24   and statistics work between the two [TS]

00:32:27   businesses that you operate in right [TS]

00:32:29   youtube and podcasting and one of the [TS]

00:32:32   biggest ones is like the how public and [TS]

00:32:36   private numbers are who's like with [TS]

00:32:38   YouTube you can't hide them like they [TS]

00:32:41   are there there on the page there under [TS]

00:32:44   the video [TS]

00:32:44   but in the podcasting world than not and [TS]

00:32:48   by and large podcasters tend to keep [TS]

00:32:51   their numbers private they just don't [TS]

00:32:54   talk about them who we don't share them [TS]

00:32:56   and I don't really know why that is but [TS]

00:32:58   because people tend not to [TS]

00:33:00   nobody does yeah it's it's weird it's [TS]

00:33:02   like every podcast feels like it's in [TS]

00:33:04   some kind of poker game with other [TS]

00:33:06   podcast like to set your numbers on [TS]

00:33:08   hello internet before and I nearly spent [TS]

00:33:11   mighty out was because not only they are [TS]

00:33:13   massive but also it was the fact that [TS]

00:33:16   you set them on the show so well great [TS]

00:33:19   you've broken the secret code that [TS]

00:33:21   people don't like to talk about numbers [TS]

00:33:22   in the podcast world in a way that I [TS]

00:33:24   find strange because yes my I feel like [TS]

00:33:28   I'm coming from this YouTube world and [TS]

00:33:30   you actually have to double-check i'm [TS]

00:33:33   pretty sure that in the option somewhere [TS]

00:33:35   you can turn off the view numbers if you [TS]

00:33:37   want to [TS]

00:33:38   oh but nobody does yes it's the opposite [TS]

00:33:42   of the private agreement [TS]

00:33:43   everybody liked it is just agrees that [TS]

00:33:47   they'll just show the numbers to [TS]

00:33:48   everybody even more so it's a bit like [TS]

00:33:50   when a bit like when people turn off [TS]

00:33:53   comments on their videos it the the [TS]

00:33:56   problems like oh you're one of those [TS]

00:33:57   right like it's just you think you're [TS]

00:34:00   better than us huh [TS]

00:34:01   oh you're such a delicate little flower [TS]

00:34:03   like nobody else's thoughts can if you [TS]

00:34:06   can approach you like you're just to use [TS]

00:34:08   separate from the rest of us taking away [TS]

00:34:11   comments on youtube I almost always [TS]

00:34:13   think it's like a worse thing to do then [TS]

00:34:15   just leave it open right just leave it [TS]

00:34:17   open because people hate it when you [TS]

00:34:19   close the comments [TS]

00:34:20   yeah just stuff I hate it yeah they're [TS]

00:34:23   gonna find you and because you closed [TS]

00:34:25   those comments like they're going to [TS]

00:34:26   spend way more energy and trying to find [TS]

00:34:28   you so just leave it open you know it's [TS]

00:34:31   it's just a funny cultural thing i have [TS]

00:34:34   only once seen someone do the no [TS]

00:34:37   comments thing well which was this [TS]

00:34:39   YouTube horror series called Marble [TS]

00:34:44   Hornets which is a slender man like fan [TS]

00:34:47   fiction horror series think this is [TS]

00:34:49   really like obscure corner of the [TS]

00:34:50   internet here Ivan I don't understand [TS]

00:34:52   any of the woods [TS]

00:34:53   but carry on i'm gonna i'm gonna carry [TS]

00:34:55   on carry Thunderman is like this [TS]

00:34:57   internet monster and his bunch of guys [TS]

00:34:59   were making like a little video that had [TS]

00:35:01   Slenderman like hunting them down in [TS]

00:35:04   every video basically and they were [TS]

00:35:05   uploading them to youtube and they [TS]

00:35:09   disabled comments for sure and I think [TS]

00:35:11   they disabled the ratings and it was one [TS]

00:35:15   of those things where it's like okay you [TS]

00:35:17   have made this experience feel different [TS]

00:35:20   because I can't leave any feedback on [TS]

00:35:22   this video this video is just like this [TS]

00:35:24   thing that exists here and so then if I [TS]

00:35:27   want to discuss this i have to go [TS]

00:35:28   somewhere else and then it kind of [TS]

00:35:31   foster like all of these communities [TS]

00:35:32   around those videos discussing what's [TS]

00:35:34   going on [TS]

00:35:35   just google image search Slenderman [TS]

00:35:37   letter for her comfortable anymore [TS]

00:35:39   yeah it's super creepy like drinking [TS]

00:35:41   from it's one of those things where it's [TS]

00:35:42   like it's just all the wrong proportions [TS]

00:35:44   to make you feel like oh god get this [TS]

00:35:45   thing away from you I don't know about [TS]

00:35:47   it and that that i will list [TS]

00:35:49   MarbleHornets as the only effective use [TS]

00:35:51   i have ever seen if someone turning off [TS]

00:35:53   the comments and it was for a particular [TS]

00:35:54   effect but if i ever saw someone who [TS]

00:35:57   would like hidden the their view stats [TS]

00:35:59   on youtube I feel like I've never stop [TS]

00:36:00   laughing at them [TS]

00:36:01   it was like oh ok that's the way you're [TS]

00:36:04   going to do this all right i don't [TS]

00:36:07   really know why it started like in the [TS]

00:36:10   podcasting well and I think because it [TS]

00:36:12   wasn't public people who didn't eat why [TS]

00:36:15   would you talk about it [TS]

00:36:16   yeah so everybody now just doesn't talk [TS]

00:36:18   about it but you don't obviously you [TS]

00:36:21   don't care to share right yeah I don't [TS]

00:36:25   really care it's not especially you and [TS]

00:36:27   Brady because you're both in the world [TS]

00:36:30   of YouTube it seems very natural to talk [TS]

00:36:33   about the numbers although again from my [TS]

00:36:36   perspective I feel like the YouTube [TS]

00:36:38   analytics are crystal clear there's that [TS]

00:36:41   it's it's very obvious exactly how many [TS]

00:36:43   people have watched your videos and [TS]

00:36:44   precisely when they have stopped [TS]

00:36:46   watching and all kinds of crazy [TS]

00:36:48   informant for information like there's [TS]

00:36:50   plenty of stuff to complain about you [TS]

00:36:51   two but they their analytics are beat by [TS]

00:36:54   no one [TS]

00:36:55   yeah whereas from my perspective the [TS]

00:36:57   podcast analytics opening seem like oh [TS]

00:36:59   come on like these crazy numbers that [TS]

00:37:02   are hard to interpret it feels like [TS]

00:37:03   there's much more guesswork in the [TS]

00:37:05   podcast world about how [TS]

00:37:06   many people even listen because it's [TS]

00:37:09   it's a bit of the reverse problem we're [TS]

00:37:11   like sometimes someone subscribes to [TS]

00:37:13   your podcast there can be a podcast [TS]

00:37:16   player on their iphone which is [TS]

00:37:17   downloading the episode diligently every [TS]

00:37:19   week but the person never listens could [TS]

00:37:21   be dead but they couldn't be dead with [TS]

00:37:23   the iphone is still downloading shows [TS]

00:37:26   and then there's also just some weird [TS]

00:37:28   stuff where I like i am convinced that [TS]

00:37:29   podcast analytics don't capture people [TS]

00:37:32   listening from the web in an accurate [TS]

00:37:35   fashion so I always feel like the [TS]

00:37:36   podcast stuff is just it's just crazy [TS]

00:37:38   it's just all over the place when people [TS]

00:37:40   ask me about hello internet now I know I [TS]

00:37:43   say it's like okay my 99 percent [TS]

00:37:46   confidence interval is like okay we have [TS]

00:37:49   two hundred thousand listeners plus or [TS]

00:37:51   minus fifty thousand listeners that that [TS]

00:37:53   plus or minus number makes me shudder [TS]

00:37:56   I can't imagine that margin of era [TS]

00:37:59   I don't understand what is the way it is [TS]

00:38:02   i think it's partly because we seem to [TS]

00:38:05   have a huge number of people who listen [TS]

00:38:07   on the web as best analytics can tell [TS]

00:38:09   like our show [TS]

00:38:11   it's not as big as hello internet it's [TS]

00:38:13   sizable I'm not going to tell you what [TS]

00:38:15   the numbers are just so you're not going [TS]

00:38:16   to discuss the numbers no i'm not going [TS]

00:38:18   to talk about them [TS]

00:38:19   why can't get to it why I just can't do [TS]

00:38:23   it [TS]

00:38:23   do I you want you know you can't do it [TS]

00:38:26   because you are from the podcast world [TS]

00:38:28   yeah exactly as I can't I can't talk [TS]

00:38:30   about it i'll be breaking the secret [TS]

00:38:32   code but our numbers are sizable that [TS]

00:38:36   they were very large and we are [TS]

00:38:40   relatively stable like that they're [TS]

00:38:43   going up which is great so thank you [TS]

00:38:45   everybody but that they don't differ by [TS]

00:38:49   like twenty or thirty thousand a week [TS]

00:38:52   like that doesn't happen mean there have [TS]

00:38:55   been times that that happened and I've [TS]

00:38:57   continuing to try and build my case for [TS]

00:38:59   the shelling as the reason for this one [TS]

00:39:04   day I really hope that you just test [TS]

00:39:06   hello internet on a schedule and then [TS]

00:39:08   the various stops and then [TS]

00:39:09   and then i win nah but until that day [TS]

00:39:12   i'm going to carry on fighting the good [TS]

00:39:13   fight but yeah that that that 50,000 [TS]

00:39:16   swingman and freaks me out [TS]

00:39:19   now we have me up at night well lucky [TS]

00:39:22   you do youtube videos [TS]

00:39:23   yeah but you see that the reason why I [TS]

00:39:24   think I'm also very happy talking about [TS]

00:39:26   these numbers is because a plus or minus [TS]

00:39:30   fifty thousand so a spread of a hundred [TS]

00:39:32   thousand to me a spread of a hundred [TS]

00:39:35   thousand doesn't even register on [TS]

00:39:37   youtube scale excellent i think it's [TS]

00:39:39   like you know YouTube scales is spreads [TS]

00:39:43   of plus or minus five million yeah if I [TS]

00:39:46   if I had a comparative spread on a show [TS]

00:39:51   I wouldn't honestly lose sleep at night [TS]

00:39:53   about I talk about these numbers we talk [TS]

00:39:57   about the subscribers on youtube because [TS]

00:39:58   this is one of those cases where I think [TS]

00:40:03   you need to figure out what statistics [TS]

00:40:05   really matter and what statistics don't [TS]

00:40:08   and I used to place a huge amount of [TS]

00:40:13   importance on youtube subscribers as a [TS]

00:40:16   statistic that I followed and now I [TS]

00:40:18   don't I I hardly think about it and [TS]

00:40:21   quite frankly the two million thing [TS]

00:40:22   really snuck up on me happy that video [TS]

00:40:25   soliciting for questions entirely [TS]

00:40:27   because like oh crap if I don't do this [TS]

00:40:28   right now I'm going to miss the mark and [TS]

00:40:30   I'm gonna look like an idiot asking for [TS]

00:40:32   questions after yeah it was just it just [TS]

00:40:35   snuck up on me too fast and then i have [TS]

00:40:38   the same thing with the podcast which is [TS]

00:40:40   like there as well [TS]

00:40:41   listens feels like a number that i [TS]

00:40:45   should be obsessed with but I just [TS]

00:40:46   really don't think about it very much [TS]

00:40:49   like I don't think those are necessarily [TS]

00:40:51   I don't care to follow it on like a [TS]

00:40:53   week-to-week basis it's not something [TS]

00:40:56   that I focus on and I think it's very [TS]

00:40:59   easy to get lost with following metrics [TS]

00:41:04   that don't really directly impact [TS]

00:41:07   anything like it's very easy for us and [TS]

00:41:10   I see people do this sometimes where [TS]

00:41:12   that people are super obsessed with how [TS]

00:41:13   many followers they have on Instagram or [TS]

00:41:16   snapchat or like whatever the newest [TS]

00:41:18   social media thing is [TS]

00:41:20   don't feel like okay okay but does that [TS]

00:41:23   number [TS]

00:41:24   translate to anything with your business [TS]

00:41:29   like I can't imagine that it does and i [TS]

00:41:34   even have data to back this up like I'm [TS]

00:41:36   i'm approaching a hundred thousand [TS]

00:41:40   followers on twitter and like 93 [TS]

00:41:44   something now I think you know what i [TS]

00:41:46   just did what this this shows you that [TS]

00:41:49   I'm not really in the the right mental [TS]

00:41:51   state [TS]

00:41:51   i just opened tweet but to to search for [TS]

00:41:54   you look at that and in the search field [TS]

00:41:57   type the word Twitter so i'm looking for [TS]

00:42:01   a Twitter to see how many followers they [TS]

00:42:03   have it set of cgpgrey we going to get [TS]

00:42:05   back to full health [TS]

00:42:07   mykes mykes not fully back yet fifty [TS]

00:42:10   percent of the way here [TS]

00:42:11   sweet and gentle today yeah I'm here so [TS]

00:42:16   i mention this is it as a thing which is [TS]

00:42:17   like people talk about oh it's really [TS]

00:42:19   important to promote your business on [TS]

00:42:20   social media and I now find myself in [TS]

00:42:23   the position that i have more followers [TS]

00:42:25   on Twitter than most people who are [TS]

00:42:27   trying to promote a business are going [TS]

00:42:29   to have but i like to do tests on [TS]

00:42:33   twitter with sometimes like track [TS]

00:42:34   through urls to see how many people [TS]

00:42:36   click on a thing how many people like [TS]

00:42:39   retweet this or whatever like i can tell [TS]

00:42:42   you even with a huge amount of followers [TS]

00:42:44   like the number of people who click on [TS]

00:42:45   URL is very small [TS]

00:42:47   I think people end up thinking a lot [TS]

00:42:50   about visible statistics because they're [TS]

00:42:53   visible and they're easy to track i see [TS]

00:42:56   people think how can i increase the [TS]

00:42:57   number of people who follow me on [TS]

00:42:59   Twitter or whatever and like okay it's [TS]

00:43:01   an easy thing to conceptualize but I [TS]

00:43:03   don't think it really matters in terms [TS]

00:43:06   of promotion as much as you think it [TS]

00:43:08   does with something like social media [TS]

00:43:10   the relevant question is do you enjoy [TS]

00:43:13   this [TS]

00:43:14   are you having fun doing this and if the [TS]

00:43:18   answer is no like well then this is not [TS]

00:43:21   a super effective tool and with a [TS]

00:43:24   minimum amount of tracking you can see [TS]

00:43:26   very fast that that obsessing over these [TS]

00:43:29   statistics is not going to help you at [TS]

00:43:31   call it just doesn't matter because [TS]

00:43:34   trust me a dude with ten times as many [TS]

00:43:36   followers on twitter if he tweets out [TS]

00:43:38   your link it's not actually that big of [TS]

00:43:41   a deal [TS]

00:43:42   almost all the time like it just doesn't [TS]

00:43:43   matter I've definitely learned over time [TS]

00:43:45   like if we have something like if we're [TS]

00:43:46   selling a t-shirt or whatever you to [TS]

00:43:48   worry about it you'll get some people [TS]

00:43:49   but you got to put talked about on the [TS]

00:43:51   show [TS]

00:43:52   like that's how people find out about it [TS]

00:43:54   that's not going to get is when they [TS]

00:43:55   find out about it from the show that's [TS]

00:43:57   where the actual audience is and it's [TS]

00:43:59   like you know comparing the amount of [TS]

00:44:01   Twitter followers I have to listeners [TS]

00:44:03   that we have liked it very rarely even [TS]

00:44:04   nearly matches up in air eat either up [TS]

00:44:07   or down like it just doesn't make any [TS]

00:44:09   sense a lot of this stuff it's like [TS]

00:44:11   they're just a bunch of different [TS]

00:44:14   numbers and I look at a lot of different [TS]

00:44:17   numbers and just see how the move [TS]

00:44:19   who what there's no way to it took to [TS]

00:44:21   correlate a lot of these things together [TS]

00:44:22   and I think that's the one of the key [TS]

00:44:24   things that you learn after doing [TS]

00:44:26   something like this for a while is that [TS]

00:44:29   you just want to see the numbers moving [TS]

00:44:32   in right one direction and that will [TS]

00:44:35   help you know something but yeah there's [TS]

00:44:38   no way that you can say and it goes all [TS]

00:44:41   the way back to talk about right the [TS]

00:44:42   stars conversation that those described [TS]

00:44:44   numbers mean you're going to get that [TS]

00:44:45   amount of video views because it just [TS]

00:44:48   doesn't mean that i am a firm firm [TS]

00:44:51   believer in trends over absolute value [TS]

00:44:57   yes that when you when you realize that [TS]

00:45:00   and you have to kind of go through a [TS]

00:45:04   period of time obsessing about [TS]

00:45:07   statistics before you realized the value [TS]

00:45:11   is in trends Luke I used to put a lot [TS]

00:45:14   more emotion i think into statistics [TS]

00:45:17   then I do now if you have a really felt [TS]

00:45:20   that way like if you ever looked at the [TS]

00:45:22   numbers and and like really obsessed [TS]

00:45:24   about them and thought like this means [TS]

00:45:26   it's good this means it's bad [TS]

00:45:28   no not in terms of video views or [TS]

00:45:32   anything like that because [TS]

00:45:35   feel like I have grown up so student [TS]

00:45:39   internet culture that I am very aware [TS]

00:45:41   that effort and quality are not [TS]

00:45:44   necessarily related in terms of success [TS]

00:45:47   in the way that people might want them [TS]

00:45:49   to be nice so nicely put i have never [TS]

00:45:51   had that feeling that I've been a few [TS]

00:45:54   situations where i feel like i'm talking [TS]

00:45:55   someone down from a cliff when they have [TS]

00:45:58   a thing that is very high quality but [TS]

00:46:00   just isn't catching on [TS]

00:46:02   for some reason yeah something like but [TS]

00:46:04   that's not how this works is I guess you [TS]

00:46:06   might have put a hundred hours into this [TS]

00:46:08   thing but that doesn't mean that it's [TS]

00:46:12   going to be super viral on the internet [TS]

00:46:15   like it is that just not how it works [TS]

00:46:17   it's never worked like that it will [TS]

00:46:20   never work like that but people want it [TS]

00:46:23   to as soon as they get into the game of [TS]

00:46:25   of making stuff [TS]

00:46:27   however the only time i was super [TS]

00:46:29   obsessed with statistics as i mentioned [TS]

00:46:32   before is when I was trying to switch to [TS]

00:46:34   youtube full-time and then I had a [TS]

00:46:36   spreadsheet that was tracking progress [TS]

00:46:37   to 200,000 subscribers that I filled out [TS]

00:46:41   and looked at every day and was looking [TS]

00:46:43   at the numbers and the projections for [TS]

00:46:45   how long is it going to take to hit this [TS]

00:46:47   number like then I was super obsessed [TS]

00:46:50   but it's because i had a goal and I had [TS]

00:46:52   a day by which i had to hit that goal [TS]

00:46:55   otherwise i was going to be teaching for [TS]

00:46:57   another year so then I was super [TS]

00:47:00   obsessed but after that like I have a [TS]

00:47:03   whole lot of spreadsheets attract a [TS]

00:47:05   whole lot of things really [TS]

00:47:07   which might be a surprise to some [TS]

00:47:09   listeners would never guessed and I do [TS]

00:47:12   track things but now it's almost [TS]

00:47:13   entirely on a monthly basis that when a [TS]

00:47:17   new month rolls around there's a bunch [TS]

00:47:19   of things that i do and one of those [TS]

00:47:20   things i update some of the spreadsheets [TS]

00:47:22   and I like to look at a lot of the stuff [TS]

00:47:26   in my business on a 12 or 24 months [TS]

00:47:31   average rolling timeframe is a big time [TS]

00:47:34   frame it's a big time frame but it's the [TS]

00:47:37   only way to smooth out something as a [TS]

00:47:39   regular as the youtube channel [TS]

00:47:41   yeah right because since some months i [TS]

00:47:43   upload other months I don't upload [TS]

00:47:45   sometimes the summer goes by and there's [TS]

00:47:47   nothing like this [TS]

00:47:49   I have to average out something like the [TS]

00:47:50   revenue on that business over a 24 month [TS]

00:47:53   time frame because otherwise the the [TS]

00:47:55   numbers are just crazy [TS]

00:47:57   it's just good that the differences [TS]

00:47:59   between a month where I do something in [TS]

00:48:01   them and a month where I don't are [TS]

00:48:02   enormous [TS]

00:48:03   I feel like I check our statistics on a [TS]

00:48:06   on a kind of a less regimented basis so [TS]

00:48:09   I check every show once a month to just [TS]

00:48:12   plug them into a spreadsheet and there [TS]

00:48:15   are some shows where I check them more [TS]

00:48:16   frequently who and and it's not i don't [TS]

00:48:19   feel like i obsess on them [TS]

00:48:20   I just look at them and go okay like [TS]

00:48:23   with we're tracking yeah but I used to [TS]

00:48:25   like really Frank over them [TS]

00:48:28   why did you fret this is that this was a [TS]

00:48:30   lot earlier and me doing this this is [TS]

00:48:33   before relay em I i used to check the [TS]

00:48:36   numbers like multiple times a day of my [TS]

00:48:38   shows see that here that is Freddie and [TS]

00:48:41   his demo and it was really because I [TS]

00:48:43   used to kind of a quite a lot more to [TS]

00:48:46   like this isn't the desperation face for [TS]

00:48:49   me write the same as how you were in [TS]

00:48:52   that phase leading up to the leaving [TS]

00:48:54   teaching who I really equated like when [TS]

00:48:57   the numbers hit X i will be able to [TS]

00:49:00   finally leave my job although for me I [TS]

00:49:04   had no way of controlling it [TS]

00:49:06   it was like a purely mental thing I I [TS]

00:49:10   hadn't done the work to actually know [TS]

00:49:11   what number does it need it and it [TS]

00:49:14   really wasn't until I could have my own [TS]

00:49:15   business before it could ever do it [TS]

00:49:17   anyway like the numbers were never gonna [TS]

00:49:18   make sense because I could never control [TS]

00:49:20   it right whoohoo [TS]

00:49:22   but yeah i used to check it a lot more [TS]

00:49:24   obsessively and and i was able to get [TS]

00:49:27   myself out of it by thinking about it [TS]

00:49:29   slightly differently and there's this [TS]

00:49:30   this is talk that that I listen to maybe [TS]

00:49:33   once every year or two and it's by my [TS]

00:49:36   manager grupa and that they gave this [TS]

00:49:38   talk yourself myself Western like 2004 [TS]

00:49:41   and they talked a lot about this type of [TS]

00:49:44   stuff like who are you making for and [TS]

00:49:47   what I eventually was able to transition [TS]

00:49:49   myself into is when I make these things [TS]

00:49:52   and creating things I try to make them [TS]

00:49:53   good for people that I imagined in my [TS]

00:49:55   mind like specific people like is this [TS]

00:49:58   person gonna like this [TS]

00:50:00   and when i was able to kind of work to [TS]

00:50:03   that it helped me stop thinking about [TS]

00:50:05   the number so much I wasn't thinking [TS]

00:50:07   about the masses of people I was trying [TS]

00:50:10   to think of specific people that might [TS]

00:50:12   enjoy it my probably top favorite [TS]

00:50:16   writing book is on writing by stephen [TS]

00:50:18   king which little bit difficult to [TS]

00:50:21   recommend because you need to have [TS]

00:50:22   already read a lot of stephen king books [TS]

00:50:24   to get the most out of that they talked [TS]

00:50:26   a lot about that book in that talk okay [TS]

00:50:29   because that matches up with his notion [TS]

00:50:33   of the ideal reader he talks about in [TS]

00:50:35   that writing books for his wife as [TS]

00:50:39   opposed to writing books for millions of [TS]

00:50:41   readers that that's a much easier thing [TS]

00:50:44   to think about and also changes the way [TS]

00:50:47   that that you create things I think [TS]

00:50:49   there's definitely value in that notion [TS]

00:50:53   because you know if you're trying to [TS]

00:50:55   think about the audience as a whole was [TS]

00:50:57   like okay well guess what the audience [TS]

00:51:00   as a whole has no personality and the [TS]

00:51:03   audience as a whole some people are [TS]

00:51:05   always going to love the thing that you [TS]

00:51:06   just made and some people are always [TS]

00:51:07   going to hate it like there's no there's [TS]

00:51:09   no direction to be derived from this [TS]

00:51:11   many people are always going to sit the [TS]

00:51:14   polar ends right well least the ones you [TS]

00:51:16   can hear from all of this comes down to [TS]

00:51:18   I think trying to figure out like what [TS]

00:51:20   is it that actually matters for tracking [TS]

00:51:23   in your business and the lessons here [TS]

00:51:26   are there's tons of stuff that's easy to [TS]

00:51:29   track that is totally pointless and [TS]

00:51:32   tracking like yeah so all the stuff is [TS]

00:51:35   really easy to get numbers alone so [TS]

00:51:37   maybe the stuff you don't need but yeah [TS]

00:51:39   I think there actually might be a direct [TS]

00:51:41   relationship with that right like that [TS]

00:51:42   the easier it is to track [TS]

00:51:44   yeah the less useful it is if you run a [TS]

00:51:48   business almost certainly one of the [TS]

00:51:49   most important things to track is [TS]

00:51:51   revenue and so lots of my spreadsheets [TS]

00:51:54   are various things related to income and [TS]

00:51:57   money flow and income diversity which is [TS]

00:52:00   the thing we should talk about that [TS]

00:52:01   another time [TS]

00:52:02   not now [TS]

00:52:03   but like so like that's what I track and [TS]

00:52:05   that's I tracked over a long time and I [TS]

00:52:08   want to see the trends like I don't [TS]

00:52:09   really care about the absolute value but [TS]

00:52:12   i just want to like these numbers going [TS]

00:52:13   up [TS]

00:52:13   okay that's great things are fine if the [TS]

00:52:15   numbers start going down then I need to [TS]

00:52:17   start thinking about changing stuff [TS]

00:52:19   around but going to this notion of [TS]

00:52:21   sometimes the most important things are [TS]

00:52:23   the hardest things to track is I'm [TS]

00:52:26   really aware like with hello internet [TS]

00:52:27   that we have a big audience but there's [TS]

00:52:30   also some kind of crazy variance in the [TS]

00:52:32   individual shows that I i just cannot [TS]

00:52:35   figure out with hello internet i think [TS]

00:52:37   one of the most important things to me [TS]

00:52:38   to be aware of is impossible to track [TS]

00:52:41   directly and it's how interested are the [TS]

00:52:45   advertisers in buying more spots that's [TS]

00:52:48   not a number that i can put on a [TS]

00:52:50   spreadsheet but it's a thing that i am [TS]

00:52:52   aware which is like okay we have this [TS]

00:52:54   audience it's wildly variant but I know [TS]

00:52:57   that advertisers once to buy more ads [TS]

00:53:02   then we want to sell them right away [TS]

00:53:04   because there's a funny thing in that [TS]

00:53:06   the numbers done actually dictate that I [TS]

00:53:09   have some particular theories about like [TS]

00:53:10   why I think it seems like advertiser's [TS]

00:53:13   get a good response from that show [TS]

00:53:16   yeah I i feel like i know it but we'll [TS]

00:53:18   save that for another time we'll save [TS]

00:53:19   that for another time I i have my own [TS]

00:53:21   theories but that but that is a perfect [TS]

00:53:23   example like there's nothing I can put [TS]

00:53:25   on a spreadsheet to directly track like [TS]

00:53:28   this advertiser response but I just know [TS]

00:53:32   that when advertisers go on that show [TS]

00:53:34   they are very happy and then advertisers [TS]

00:53:36   want to block out a whole year and we [TS]

00:53:37   find ourselves in these conversations [TS]

00:53:38   like no we will not sell you a whole [TS]

00:53:40   years worth of advertising in advance [TS]

00:53:43   like that's a great thing that's super [TS]

00:53:45   important but that is impossible to [TS]

00:53:47   track in a in a statistically [TS]

00:53:50   significant way but it is probably one [TS]

00:53:52   of the most important things that I'm [TS]

00:53:53   just aware of like this is a good thing [TS]

00:53:55   one of the hardest things about tracking [TS]

00:53:57   that as well as there are factors that [TS]

00:53:59   have nothing to do with you that you [TS]

00:54:00   don't know [TS]

00:54:01   yeah yeah there's so much that's just [TS]

00:54:02   out of your control like budgets yeah [TS]

00:54:04   you have no idea what's happening in [TS]

00:54:06   those companies budgets like you might [TS]

00:54:08   have a company that has bought your show [TS]

00:54:10   every episode 44 years then they stop [TS]

00:54:14   you think it's you but they just went [TS]

00:54:15   out of business [TS]

00:54:16   nothing to do with you met this is [TS]

00:54:19   something that as I have been more and [TS]

00:54:23   more in the business of the podcasting [TS]

00:54:25   world i have discovered the seasonality [TS]

00:54:27   of corporate budgets and the importance [TS]

00:54:30   of quarters in New York rolls around [TS]

00:54:33   it's to me it's just like coming from [TS]

00:54:35   the YouTube world where none of this [TS]

00:54:37   stuff matters that like YouTube just [TS]

00:54:38   handles all of it for you just so aware [TS]

00:54:42   of of like the annual cycle and [TS]

00:54:45   corporate budgets for advertising for [TS]

00:54:48   yeah i got my head around cool is I'm [TS]

00:54:51   getting now starting to understand you a [TS]

00:54:53   little bit more as well but it's funny [TS]

00:54:55   to find myself having conversations [TS]

00:54:58   where I feel like the douchiest business [TS]

00:54:59   person in the world around like yeah we [TS]

00:55:01   can revisit that in q3 that such base in [TS]

00:55:04   the next cool top great i cannot believe [TS]

00:55:06   I'd say things like we can circle back [TS]

00:55:09   and q4 what have I become today's [TS]

00:55:13   episode of cortex is also brought to you [TS]

00:55:15   by Casper an online retailer of premium [TS]

00:55:18   mattresses that you can get for a [TS]

00:55:19   fraction of the price that you'll find [TS]

00:55:21   in mattress stores the matches industry [TS]

00:55:24   is a really weird one you for a long [TS]

00:55:26   time people have been forced into paying [TS]

00:55:28   high prices and having a weird [TS]

00:55:29   experience to go on why these mattresses [TS]

00:55:32   you go to a dealer they put the prices [TS]

00:55:35   up of course right because you've got to [TS]

00:55:36   have a middleman in the middle of it all [TS]

00:55:37   but also going into the showrooms [TS]

00:55:39   sitting on beds and seeing if it's right [TS]

00:55:42   for you for like 20 seconds and sleeping [TS]

00:55:44   on it for the next 10 years [TS]

00:55:45   that doesn't make any sense and this is [TS]

00:55:47   what Casper is here to fix not only they [TS]

00:55:51   that provides resilience on long-lasting [TS]

00:56:06   better nights and brighter days it has [TS]

00:56:07   just the right sink and just the right [TS]

00:56:09   bounce it is obsessively engineered had [TS]

00:56:12   a shockingly fair price usually [TS]

00:56:14   mattresses will cost well over fifteen [TS]

00:56:16   hundred dollars but casper mattresses [TS]

00:56:18   cost between 504 @ winside 754 full-size [TS]

00:56:22   854 a queen and 954 a king and all [TS]

00:56:25   casper mattresses and [TS]

00:56:27   in America can understand that buying a [TS]

00:56:30   mattress online can leave people [TS]

00:56:31   wondering how is this possible and can [TS]

00:56:33   raise a few questions well they do all [TS]

00:56:35   of this very simply by making completely [TS]

00:56:38   risk-free there for free delivery and [TS]

00:56:40   returns in a 100-day period is that [TS]

00:56:42   simple [TS]

00:56:44   sleeping in your home in your pajamas [TS]

00:56:46   with your own bedding and you will [TS]

00:56:48   decide if it's right for you if you [TS]

00:56:50   don't like it you have a hundred days in [TS]

00:56:52   which you can return it Casper will pick [TS]

00:56:54   it up for you it is all done for free [TS]

00:57:05   should try them out for yourself and the [TS]

00:57:07   best way to do that is to go to capital [TS]

00:57:09   com / cortex you can find out more [TS]

00:57:12   information there but you also get fifty [TS]

00:57:14   dollars towards any mattress purchase by [TS]

00:57:16   visiting that URL it's Casper dot-coms [TS]

00:57:21   checkout terms and conditions apply [TS]

00:57:23   please seek apple.com / cortex for [TS]

00:57:25   details thank you so much to cancel for [TS]

00:57:27   their support of this show really a fan [TS]

00:57:29   right so talking about millions of views [TS]

00:57:31   there was this whole hob in the YouTube [TS]

00:57:35   world which is so funny that I kind of [TS]

00:57:37   set on the very sidelines now like a CD [TS]

00:57:40   start these things that to pop into my [TS]

00:57:42   life a little bit more youtube drama [TS]

00:57:45   yeah and a lot of my friends found out [TS]

00:57:49   about this because of you [TS]

00:57:51   movement i don't think i would have [TS]

00:57:52   found out about it if it wasn't for you [TS]

00:57:54   and this whole thing about react videos [TS]

00:57:56   and I don't want to get into the whole [TS]

00:57:58   business of it i am assuming you and [TS]

00:58:00   Brady will probably talk about some [TS]

00:58:02   point maybe and I'll put some links in [TS]

00:58:05   the show notes to people if they want to [TS]

00:58:07   find out exactly what is going on or [TS]

00:58:10   have gone on with this here's here's the [TS]

00:58:12   thumbnail sketch for anyone who's just [TS]

00:58:15   listening now there's no idea what Mike [TS]

00:58:16   is talking about [TS]

00:58:17   yeah basically two very popular [TS]

00:58:21   youtubers put out two videos that were [TS]

00:58:24   hilariously tone-deaf and super [TS]

00:58:30   corporate and the YouTube world reacted [TS]

00:58:35   very very poorly to these and lots of [TS]

00:58:39   people were putting out videos [TS]

00:58:41   complaining about what they had done or [TS]

00:58:43   the way they had done it was kind of a [TS]

00:58:45   big pile on and i came to this very late [TS]

00:58:48   but as soon as I saw those two videos is [TS]

00:58:51   like I cannot not make my own videos [TS]

00:58:54   about this and so I did [TS]

00:58:58   yes in anything that will go down in [TS]

00:59:01   history [TS]

00:59:02   I think cgpgrey it's one of the most [TS]

00:59:06   like out-of-character days I've have [TS]

00:59:11   seen from you always say this about [TS]

00:59:13   things being out of character yes but [TS]

00:59:15   they're in York if they're you there in [TS]

00:59:17   your character has a get it but ok you [TS]

00:59:22   adapt your character that day was just [TS]

00:59:25   waiting to happen [TS]

00:59:26   yes James yes only a matter of time the [TS]

00:59:28   movie but the reason I went to bring [TS]

00:59:30   this up is that how long did it take you [TS]

00:59:33   to create these two videos [TS]

00:59:36   ok so i went back and took a look at the [TS]

00:59:40   files like when the file creation time [TS]

00:59:42   happens i was curious to know myself and [TS]

00:59:46   essentially these two videos together to [TS]

00:59:50   make both of them took me less than 40 [TS]

00:59:53   minutes to make from start to finish [TS]

00:59:56   alright as we sit here today they're [TS]

00:59:59   about [TS]

00:59:59   about [TS]

01:00:00   we called and have accumulated together [TS]

01:00:03   close to two million views right making [TS]

01:00:08   this the single-most profitable 40 [TS]

01:00:10   minutes of your entire life right [TS]

01:00:12   yeah yeah i think it is quite probable [TS]

01:00:15   that that is the most money i will ever [TS]

01:00:18   make per hour of anything that I've ever [TS]

01:00:21   done now or in the future right [TS]

01:00:24   it's just so little time as a man of [TS]

01:00:27   tracking statistics a man of tracking [TS]

01:00:30   all of this kind of stuff you've got to [TS]

01:00:34   have some kind of opinion about this [TS]

01:00:36   like what does this say that why what [TS]

01:00:40   does this say to you [TS]

01:00:41   well it's not always going to be things [TS]

01:00:45   that you do this stuff with and it's [TS]

01:00:48   kind of funny that you made some [TS]

01:00:50   reaction videos and think we're gonna be [TS]

01:00:52   popular [TS]

01:00:53   who's quite ironic good the whole scheme [TS]

01:00:56   of things [TS]

01:00:57   yeah i think this is part of the [TS]

01:01:01   statistics conversation because i think [TS]

01:01:05   it's really important for people to be [TS]

01:01:07   aware that statistics are just not [TS]

01:01:10   everything and so if I if I was just an [TS]

01:01:15   absolute cold-blooded businessman who [TS]

01:01:20   only cared about the money [TS]

01:01:23   obviously I should get into the snarky [TS]

01:01:26   reaction video business [TS]

01:01:28   yeah right and this is not an [TS]

01:01:32   exaggeration i could probably 10 x [TS]

01:01:36   revenue if i did so at least at least [TS]

01:01:38   10x per hour [TS]

01:01:41   huh you think because it's these pianos [TS]

01:01:45   took no effort to do [TS]

01:01:47   everybody loves a good bit of drama and [TS]

01:01:51   a good bit of an internet fight like [TS]

01:01:53   internet by everybody comes along right [TS]

01:01:55   and they want to see what everybody has [TS]

01:01:57   to say about what's going on like these [TS]

01:01:59   are very popular things they're always [TS]

01:02:01   enough internet flights to get involved [TS]

01:02:03   in to sustain a business yet but I mean [TS]

01:02:05   the thing is this whole bizarre funny [TS]

01:02:09   subsection of YouTube that I mostly stay [TS]

01:02:12   away from [TS]

01:02:13   it is entirely devoted to youtube drama [TS]

01:02:15   and then of course everybody knows like [TS]

01:02:18   a pack of drama llamas like they just [TS]

01:02:19   draw more drama llamas like it brings [TS]

01:02:21   its own energy and audience and like [TS]

01:02:25   these things feed on them so there is a [TS]

01:02:26   whole economy built around this kind of [TS]

01:02:29   stuff and it's hugely popular but it's [TS]

01:02:32   just crazy and that's that's partly what [TS]

01:02:34   these videos like stumbled upon a little [TS]

01:02:37   bit like a guy always cgpgrey got in on [TS]

01:02:39   the action too and everybody watches the [TS]

01:02:40   video so yeah it's like from a business [TS]

01:02:42   perspective it's like stupid not to make [TS]

01:02:45   more of these but this is but this is [TS]

01:02:48   where there was like I am trying to [TS]

01:02:50   build a life that I want to live [TS]

01:02:53   I'm not trying to make a company that [TS]

01:02:55   maximizes revenue under all [TS]

01:02:57   circumstances all the time [TS]

01:02:59   yeah that's a really good way of putting [TS]

01:03:01   it I don't want to make reaction videos [TS]

01:03:04   all the time I don't want to follow [TS]

01:03:06   youtube drama like I just don't care I [TS]

01:03:09   don't care [TS]

01:03:10   almost all of the time and yeah this [TS]

01:03:14   stuff would be really easy to make [TS]

01:03:16   yeah it would probably be pretty popular [TS]

01:03:18   but it's it's not something that I want [TS]

01:03:21   to do and this is this is again those [TS]

01:03:25   moments where there's a kind of conflict [TS]

01:03:26   between the CEO of grey incorporated and [TS]

01:03:29   the employee of grey incorporated but [TS]

01:03:31   since I'm the same person i can and do [TS]

01:03:35   make decisions that aren't terrible [TS]

01:03:37   business wise but that are great [TS]

01:03:40   personal life wise and i think it's it's [TS]

01:03:43   incredibly important to be conscious of [TS]

01:03:47   that kind of thing I could be aware of [TS]

01:03:52   don't think business decisions that you [TS]

01:03:54   won't be happy with like I would just I [TS]

01:03:57   would hate doing nothing but this now [TS]

01:04:00   might I make one again in the future I [TS]

01:04:02   don't know maybe if another perfect [TS]

01:04:04   storm like this and it is just [TS]

01:04:06   irresistible comes along but I'm not [TS]

01:04:10   starting you know cgp reacts it's just [TS]

01:04:13   not a thing that I'm going to do is not [TS]

01:04:15   a thing that i have any interest in [TS]

01:04:17   doing like I I like making the kinds of [TS]

01:04:20   videos that i make i like making videos [TS]

01:04:22   on topics that are of interest to me and [TS]

01:04:25   I [TS]

01:04:26   just such a lucky bastard that there is [TS]

01:04:30   a large enough audience of people who [TS]

01:04:32   are interested in the kinds of things [TS]

01:04:34   that I make that I can do this for a [TS]

01:04:35   living [TS]

01:04:36   really it's there's no reason that [TS]

01:04:38   should be but it happens to be and i am [TS]

01:04:41   the lucky benefactor of that but you [TS]

01:04:45   know you can [TS]

01:04:48   and people do strategically go after big [TS]

01:04:54   popular audiences of stuff [TS]

01:04:57   well people have different goals like [TS]

01:04:59   it's the same thing for me look there is [TS]

01:05:01   a there is a style of podcasting that [TS]

01:05:05   seems to be extremely popular which [TS]

01:05:07   basically sounds like it's made by [TS]

01:05:09   public radio all right yeah your podcast [TS]

01:05:13   yeah and the giblet podcast which all [TS]

01:05:15   sound the same [TS]

01:05:16   yeah and I've dabbled in some stuff [TS]

01:05:19   which is stylistically close to it [TS]

01:05:22   little weak i could try and go further [TS]

01:05:24   in that direction [TS]

01:05:26   I could try more and more projects but [TS]

01:05:28   it doesn't interest me as much as the [TS]

01:05:30   stuff that I do the people talking think [TS]

01:05:34   that's the stuff that I like it's stuff [TS]

01:05:37   that we make it's stuff that we [TS]

01:05:39   commissioned like this is my thing that [TS]

01:05:42   I enjoy like this is what i like to do [TS]

01:05:46   I'm again consider myself a very very [TS]

01:05:49   lucky person i get to make what I like [TS]

01:05:51   to make some people like to listen to [TS]

01:05:53   their and I get paid to do it and that's [TS]

01:05:57   also that's how I feel there are people [TS]

01:06:00   that feel differently but they just [TS]

01:06:01   motivated by different things right it's [TS]

01:06:03   not wrong it's just motivated [TS]

01:06:05   differently like me and you are [TS]

01:06:06   motivated to do the type of thing that [TS]

01:06:09   we like because it makes us happy but [TS]

01:06:11   for some people they just want to make [TS]

01:06:13   the most money they can make and what [TS]

01:06:15   that means is creating videos talking [TS]

01:06:18   about people fighting who [TS]

01:06:21   but the thing is the reason they make [TS]

01:06:22   money is to people like to in to watch [TS]

01:06:24   those things they enjoy them [TS]

01:06:25   oh yeah and internet fight done right is [TS]

01:06:28   fine because the whole there's no way [TS]

01:06:30   around it like it just it plugs into [TS]

01:06:32   something that humans like I always want [TS]

01:06:35   to be a clearly i'm never quite [TS]

01:06:37   pooh-poohing people enjoying other [TS]

01:06:40   kind of content because I think that's [TS]

01:06:41   the kind of thing that you can't really [TS]

01:06:42   control like it's just whether your [TS]

01:06:44   brain reacts to it or it doesn't look [TS]

01:06:46   like whatever I don't know I sometimes [TS]

01:06:48   get into arguments with people when they [TS]

01:06:49   say things like oh there's so much [TS]

01:06:50   garbage on youtube was like what is it [TS]

01:06:52   popular like then tons of people like it [TS]

01:06:55   you know i like who and who are you to [TS]

01:06:57   say like Oh everybody should be watching [TS]

01:06:59   masterpiece theater right like well [TS]

01:07:01   should they should they always like I [TS]

01:07:04   don't watch masterpiece theater all day [TS]

01:07:06   long I like gossip and flying as much as [TS]

01:07:08   the next person [TS]

01:07:09   yeah who doesn't and it's nice that [TS]

01:07:13   there's a place for it [TS]

01:07:14   I just don't feel like I need to be the [TS]

01:07:16   person to make it another youtube [TS]

01:07:18   version of this is from my perspective [TS]

01:07:21   just low-effort list videos just like [TS]

01:07:25   lists do really well on websites list he [TS]

01:07:29   really well in video format and it's [TS]

01:07:31   like it's not like I've never do a list [TS]

01:07:33   it's not that I don't think it's can't [TS]

01:07:34   be done well but i know i know that i [TS]

01:07:39   almost certainly could have videos that [TS]

01:07:42   were way more popular that are way [TS]

01:07:44   easier to make if I just said after [TS]

01:07:48   making lists i'm making lists from now [TS]

01:07:50   on you go right [TS]

01:07:51   10 amazing places you've never heard of [TS]

01:07:54   seven things your body does you won't [TS]

01:07:56   believe right it's like it stuffs really [TS]

01:07:59   easy to do it's like it's it's not hard [TS]

01:08:04   and the the siren song of it is it's not [TS]

01:08:09   hard and it almost certainly would be [TS]

01:08:11   very popular way more popular than what [TS]

01:08:14   i'm doing now but i also know like I I [TS]

01:08:17   just don't want to make those that [TS]

01:08:18   that's not a thing that I want to do and [TS]

01:08:21   yeah the business would love it but I [TS]

01:08:23   would not i would not love that so you [TS]

01:08:28   just have to be careful like I guess it [TS]

01:08:30   before and I keep track of these these [TS]

01:08:32   graphs like business revenue over time [TS]

01:08:35   and like at some point these graphs are [TS]

01:08:39   going to level off this is just like at [TS]

01:08:42   some point [TS]

01:08:44   youtube subscriber numbers will level [TS]

01:08:45   off because there are only so many [TS]

01:08:47   people in the world [TS]

01:08:49   right like there's only so much value [TS]

01:08:50   that I can create in a day in an hour [TS]

01:08:54   but when I come to those points like I [TS]

01:08:56   know and I'm very comfortable with the [TS]

01:08:58   idea of like okay revenues leveled off [TS]

01:09:00   viewers are left have leveled off I'm [TS]

01:09:02   gonna be totally fine continuing to do [TS]

01:09:05   what I do and I'm not going to feel like [TS]

01:09:07   oh I need to start going after list [TS]

01:09:09   videos and reaction videos and all this [TS]

01:09:11   other stuff to keep this graph going up [TS]

01:09:12   because this is the huge benefit of [TS]

01:09:15   working for yourself i am not a public [TS]

01:09:18   company i do not need to keep growing [TS]

01:09:20   forever [TS]

01:09:21   this is not one of my goals and it is [TS]

01:09:23   very very important to keep that in [TS]

01:09:26   front of mind like yes I have all of [TS]

01:09:29   these spreadsheets but these [TS]

01:09:30   spreadsheets are not the measure of [TS]

01:09:32   success like I view the measure of [TS]

01:09:36   success as having control over my life [TS]

01:09:38   and being able to work on the things [TS]

01:09:40   that interest me and I know for a fact [TS]

01:09:45   that the opportunity cost of that [TS]

01:09:48   decision is enormous [TS]

01:09:51   like I can put i can put ballpark [TS]

01:09:53   figures on just how enormous that [TS]

01:09:55   opportunity cost is and it is [TS]

01:09:57   breathtaking [TS]

01:09:58   because i don't know it's just like I [TS]

01:10:01   see these comments sometimes right we're [TS]

01:10:03   like I have advertisements at the end of [TS]

01:10:05   some of my youtube videos now like I've [TS]

01:10:07   done audible azerbaijan Squarespace ads [TS]

01:10:09   and maybe someday we can talk about why [TS]

01:10:11   that's the case actually might be good [TS]

01:10:12   for the diversity episode but sometimes [TS]

01:10:15   I'll see comments from people who are [TS]

01:10:16   like oh what a sellout like can't [TS]

01:10:18   believe it look at that this guy put an [TS]

01:10:20   audible ad for Guns Germs and Steel at [TS]

01:10:22   the end of his America box video what a [TS]

01:10:24   total sellout always kind of lavender [TS]

01:10:26   because it's like dude when I sellout [TS]

01:10:29   you will know its yeah like I don't [TS]

01:10:34   think you have any idea the kind of [TS]

01:10:37   offers that come across the table of [TS]

01:10:40   someone who consistently gets millions [TS]

01:10:43   of views on YouTube epic i say no to [TS]

01:10:49   tons of things that would make me a lot [TS]

01:10:52   of money for very little effort because [TS]

01:10:56   i don't think that they're good [TS]

01:10:57   decisions in the long term and because i [TS]

01:11:00   think that they would make me unhappy [TS]

01:11:03   e to do I've said no to a lot of stuff [TS]

01:11:06   and it was a little bit harder in the [TS]

01:11:07   beginning because you feel like my [TS]

01:11:10   immediate trust me [TS]

01:11:12   sometimes there are offers that come [TS]

01:11:14   along with like highway gigantic car [TS]

01:11:16   company we will pay you an enormous [TS]

01:11:18   amount of money to make a video about [TS]

01:11:20   our car and I was like oh god i'm going [TS]

01:11:23   to say no to this like that is a huge [TS]

01:11:25   check but i'm going to say no but I'm [TS]

01:11:29   gonna wonder for a day or so like am I [TS]

01:11:31   an idiot pocket just a moron [TS]

01:11:34   I'm cgpgrey and i'm here to tell you [TS]

01:11:36   about why this new floor car is amazing [TS]

01:11:39   yeah i mean that's basically what you [TS]

01:11:40   get pitch sometimes yeah i mean when [TS]

01:11:43   people see that video that's well know [TS]

01:11:45   that yeah yeah that's what it was like [TS]

01:11:47   hold out like you know it's fine and you [TS]

01:11:52   know everybody does have the price right [TS]

01:11:54   but like my prices at this stage is like [TS]

01:11:56   can you pay me enough so that I never [TS]

01:11:57   have to work again and can live a life [TS]

01:11:59   of luxury [TS]

01:11:59   then I will do your car company [TS]

01:12:01   commercial like that's fine now we can [TS]

01:12:03   then we can have a discussion maybe but [TS]

01:12:05   it's just it's so important especially [TS]

01:12:10   if you are the only person in your [TS]

01:12:12   business that you have to balance all [TS]

01:12:14   that stuff of like not only what will [TS]

01:12:16   make me money but like what will I also [TS]

01:12:18   fee feel ok doing [TS]

01:12:23   I don't think I've told this story [TS]

01:12:24   before but the hardest decision like [TS]

01:12:27   this that I ever had actually came [TS]

01:12:29   literally the week after i had quit [TS]

01:12:33   teaching so I was brand-new just on my [TS]

01:12:37   own self employed for the first time and [TS]

01:12:41   as you are in that situation terrified [TS]

01:12:44   that you might have made the worst [TS]

01:12:45   decision of your life a little desperate [TS]

01:12:47   to right yeah you feel like you're [TS]

01:12:50   really you're suddenly living on the [TS]

01:12:53   edge [TS]

01:12:53   yeah right you don't know where money's [TS]

01:12:55   coming from and is this moment of like [TS]

01:12:58   oh god my own life is in my own hands [TS]

01:13:01   like I might have just totally mess this [TS]

01:13:03   up [TS]

01:13:04   yeah and in particular for reasons i've [TS]

01:13:07   alluded to in the past like I also in [TS]

01:13:09   the process of leaving teaching like [TS]

01:13:10   might have totally screwed myself out of [TS]

01:13:12   being able to get another teaching job [TS]

01:13:14   but that's a [TS]

01:13:15   on the side there but so the week after [TS]

01:13:19   I quit my teaching job I had a phone [TS]

01:13:24   call with someone from a large [TS]

01:13:28   publishing company and they had this [TS]

01:13:34   offer for me which basically went like [TS]

01:13:37   this we will write you a check that is [TS]

01:13:42   more money then you have made in the [TS]

01:13:46   last four years right now if we can use [TS]

01:13:52   your name on a book about fun history [TS]

01:13:57   facts that you won't write but that we [TS]

01:14:01   will sell and you just mention it on [TS]

01:14:04   your YouTube channel that there's like [TS]

01:14:06   cgp Gray's fun history facts book that [TS]

01:14:09   this exists God feels like a golden [TS]

01:14:13   goose right at that stage right where [TS]

01:14:18   you are [TS]

01:14:19   like that's your security for the next [TS]

01:14:21   four years exactly what it was right [TS]

01:14:23   it's like somewhat someone is going to [TS]

01:14:24   hand you peace of mind just the biggest [TS]

01:14:28   safety net for the next several years [TS]

01:14:31   the only thing you have to do is sell [TS]

01:14:35   your name and it was one of these things [TS]

01:14:41   like man did I get in some arguments [TS]

01:14:43   with some people about this because i [TS]

01:14:47   didn't like that deal why I didn't like [TS]

01:14:52   the deal because I didn't I thought man [TS]

01:14:56   I don't want to have my name on some [TS]

01:14:58   ghostwritten thing forever [TS]

01:15:01   this is one of these things with with [TS]

01:15:02   business like how much of an incentive [TS]

01:15:04   do they have to make this amazing i [TS]

01:15:09   imagine not a huge incentive because [TS]

01:15:11   with their banking on you to go no say [TS]

01:15:13   in the book at all [TS]

01:15:15   yeah what they're banking on is like oh [TS]

01:15:17   here is a guy who [TS]

01:15:19   as a big audience of enthusiastic [TS]

01:15:22   followers and we're going to make more [TS]

01:15:27   money off of all of these people buying [TS]

01:15:29   the first thing that he has made then [TS]

01:15:32   the size of this check that we're going [TS]

01:15:33   to write and we're just gonna hire some [TS]

01:15:35   ghostwriters to just turn this thing out [TS]

01:15:37   in a weekend i don't remember the [TS]

01:15:39   details now but they had some [TS]

01:15:40   hilariously fast time frame right which [TS]

01:15:43   is just again indicates like okay well [TS]

01:15:45   you're not gonna make a great book here [TS]

01:15:46   it may have been written already [TS]

01:15:49   yeah take they just needed to make a [TS]

01:15:51   cover it very well may have been the [TS]

01:15:54   case that this was something from some [TS]

01:15:56   other aborted project that they were [TS]

01:15:57   just trying to figure out it was written [TS]

01:15:59   and they would just wait until some [TS]

01:16:01   person said yeah exactly [TS]

01:16:04   you may have been the third person right [TS]

01:16:05   yeah yeah you never know you never know [TS]

01:16:07   what this stuff that was the hardest [TS]

01:16:11   business decision i think i have ever [TS]

01:16:14   made because i was in the absolute worst [TS]

01:16:18   negotiating position [TS]

01:16:19   yep it was the thing that I needed most [TS]

01:16:22   at that time a shocking amount of [TS]

01:16:24   financial security but i did i did say [TS]

01:16:30   no and and like I was saying like I got [TS]

01:16:32   into arguments with people and free [TS]

01:16:35   universal wall of consensus was you're a [TS]

01:16:38   moron for not taking this think what it [TS]

01:16:40   what are you what do you even debating [TS]

01:16:42   but sitting here now I am so glad that I [TS]

01:16:46   didn't do that that I don't have some [TS]

01:16:48   kind of albatross around my neck [TS]

01:16:52   you would never get over it like yeah [TS]

01:16:55   but the way that I know you that would [TS]

01:16:57   always bother you always and I feel that [TS]

01:17:00   same way about some of the things that [TS]

01:17:01   come to me as business deals for the [TS]

01:17:02   YouTube channels like I don't want to [TS]

01:17:06   make a video that somebody else is just [TS]

01:17:09   paying me to make that I have no [TS]

01:17:11   interest in because the check was really [TS]

01:17:15   big again it's like sometimes you feel [TS]

01:17:18   really dumb turning down these things [TS]

01:17:20   but it doesn't it doesn't change the [TS]

01:17:23   fact that like again as a one-person [TS]

01:17:24   business like I have to live with the [TS]

01:17:26   thing that I [TS]

01:17:27   I am doing and if there's a really [TS]

01:17:31   terrible book with my name on it [TS]

01:17:33   I want to have written that terrible [TS]

01:17:35   book right i want to be able to look at [TS]

01:17:37   that and go wow that was my fault i did [TS]

01:17:41   a terrible job on that at least I tried [TS]

01:17:44   right but it was me doing it what I [TS]

01:17:47   don't want is something where like I [TS]

01:17:50   have sold my name to be used on a thing [TS]

01:17:53   and it's terrible it's like oh ok that's [TS]

01:17:56   awful [TS]

01:17:57   that's absolutely awful now and then in [TS]

01:18:00   addition the feeling of like kind of [TS]

01:18:02   having tricked my audience into making a [TS]

01:18:05   purchase that I had nothing to do with [TS]

01:18:06   like men not none of this do i like i [TS]

01:18:08   like none of it but that's why you know [TS]

01:18:11   just like this these are surprisingly [TS]

01:18:14   popular react because it's like you [TS]

01:18:16   can't use just the metrics to make all [TS]

01:18:20   of the decisions those reactors were fun [TS]

01:18:22   to make [TS]

01:18:23   maybe I'll do something like that again [TS]

01:18:24   in the future but i'm not going to chase [TS]

01:18:26   that career and yeah sometimes I get [TS]

01:18:31   offers from companies that on a pure [TS]

01:18:34   return-on-investment basis i like great [TS]

01:18:37   deals but it's you can evaluate [TS]

01:18:40   everything in that way even if that's [TS]

01:18:43   what you're using to track some of the [TS]

01:18:45   data in your life this episode of cortex [TS]

01:18:48   is brought to you by a glue the internet [TS]

01:18:50   you will actually like not the internet [TS]

01:18:53   you already like the internet everybody [TS]

01:18:54   like the internet but your intranet you [TS]

01:18:57   probably hate it [TS]

01:18:58   you want some company and the internal [TS]

01:19:01   intranet is just a nightmare to work [TS]

01:19:03   with [TS]

01:19:03   I know all the intranets that I've ever [TS]

01:19:05   had to work with they were horrible [TS]

01:19:07   I hated them they were old they were [TS]

01:19:09   clunky they were conflicts all the time [TS]

01:19:11   it was just a big big problem but not [TS]

01:19:14   with a glue glue allows you to make your [TS]

01:19:17   internet feel like a place that you [TS]

01:19:19   actually want to work it's surprisingly [TS]

01:19:22   configurable and you can completely [TS]

01:19:24   rebrand it to give it the look and feel [TS]

01:19:26   of your team or company thanks to group [TS]

01:19:29   spaces role-based access permissions and [TS]

01:19:31   easy to drag-and-drop widget editors you [TS]

01:19:33   can make the whole internet work exactly [TS]

01:19:36   the way your team needs it to you can [TS]

01:19:39   share files with your coworker [TS]

01:19:41   is you can all collaborate on the same [TS]

01:19:43   documents you can use read receipts to [TS]

01:19:45   see who's seen what for tracking [TS]

01:19:47   important information [TS]

01:19:49   it's just way simpler and way more [TS]

01:19:51   powerful than the internet at the [TS]

01:19:53   company that you are probably using [TS]

01:19:55   right now so it's time to break away [TS]

01:19:56   from that internet you hate if you are [TS]

01:20:00   the IT guy at your company who's in [TS]

01:20:02   charge of setting up these internets [TS]

01:20:03   check out a glue if you're an employee [TS]

01:20:05   have a little chat with the IT guy tell [TS]

01:20:07   them cortex sent you [TS]

01:20:08   so go and sign up for a glue right now [TS]

01:20:10   at a glue software.com / cortex you can [TS]

01:20:15   try it for free and for any team with up [TS]

01:20:18   to 10 people you can use it for free as [TS]

01:20:20   long as you want you really have nothing [TS]

01:20:22   to lose [TS]

01:20:23   once again that's igloo software.com / [TS]

01:20:26   cortex thank you so much to glue for [TS]

01:20:28   supporting cortex and all of real afm [TS]

01:20:30   alright Mike there's a thing I want to [TS]

01:20:34   talk to you about em and is a thing that [TS]

01:20:38   I wanted to talk to you about so much [TS]

01:20:41   that contrary to my normal character i [TS]

01:20:46   was trying to convince you a while back [TS]

01:20:48   to record an emergency episode cortex [TS]

01:20:52   that's how much I wanted to talk about [TS]

01:20:54   that I have and I message from you which [TS]

01:20:57   i think i feel like i need to frame and [TS]

01:20:59   sent back to you huh where you work with [TS]

01:21:02   you were basically asking me to do more [TS]

01:21:04   work and I was telling you know this [TS]

01:21:08   might be the only time in the history of [TS]

01:21:10   our working collaboration together or [TS]

01:21:13   ever in the future but yes I would like [TS]

01:21:15   okay we need to record number to the [TS]

01:21:17   episode because i feel incredibly [TS]

01:21:20   strongly about a thing and I need to get [TS]

01:21:24   this out there but obviously here we are [TS]

01:21:26   now dear listener Mike wouldn't do an [TS]

01:21:29   emergency cortex and so now this is in [TS]

01:21:31   the regular show where do we begin this [TS]

01:21:35   story of whoa Mike it has been well [TS]

01:21:38   documented that myself and gray love our [TS]

01:21:41   iPad pros [TS]

01:21:42   yes it is further documented that we [TS]

01:21:45   love to use our Apple pencils with them [TS]

01:21:47   from drawing with them but also to use [TS]

01:21:51   them like pen tablets to interact with [TS]

01:21:52   them too [TS]

01:21:53   attacked things to scroll things because [TS]

01:21:55   it's nice it's already in your hand [TS]

01:21:57   great you can just use it like a finger [TS]

01:22:00   currently Apple have in both developer [TS]

01:22:04   and public beta iOS 9.3 I'm getting too [TS]

01:22:09   old to install betas can become an old [TS]

01:22:11   man now i cant got time for this kind of [TS]

01:22:13   young man's game installing betas on [TS]

01:22:15   your main machines here however however [TS]

01:22:19   the night shift feature in 9.3 was one [TS]

01:22:23   of those things that I was intensely [TS]

01:22:25   interested in I wanted to see how it [TS]

01:22:27   worked [TS]

01:22:27   no one else can show you screenshots or [TS]

01:22:30   pictures you have to see it in person [TS]

01:22:31   you know and so I thought okay let me [TS]

01:22:35   come out of retirement right install the [TS]

01:22:37   beta on my main machine and three-time I [TS]

01:22:41   get out they pull me right back in [TS]

01:22:43   exactly that it's always gonna be [TS]

01:22:46   something like this but you know this [TS]

01:22:47   time this time with this one and I [TS]

01:22:49   really do mean that like my ipad pro is [TS]

01:22:52   without doubt my main machine by Miles [TS]

01:22:56   has got to be the thing that I am doing [TS]

01:22:58   ninety percent of all of my computing on [TS]

01:23:00   including my headphone sign so I know I [TS]

01:23:04   installed as I got 1i chip this is great [TS]

01:23:06   and i was using the the ipad to just [TS]

01:23:08   read some stuff and I like what I really [TS]

01:23:10   want to see is how this works with [TS]

01:23:12   ibooks at night i open up I books and I [TS]

01:23:15   have the pencil in my hand as i always [TS]

01:23:17   do and I go to turn the page and I books [TS]

01:23:19   like that's weird [TS]

01:23:21   the pink page doesn't turn with the [TS]

01:23:23   pencil anymore how as well of course [TS]

01:23:25   this is why I like it's a beta it's a [TS]

01:23:27   bug and I gave using the ipad and let [TS]

01:23:30   them in safari like huh [TS]

01:23:31   the the web page isn't scrolling when I [TS]

01:23:34   go to use this pencil to scroll and [TS]

01:23:37   safari like that's weird and then I open [TS]

01:23:38   to share sheet in good notes which is my [TS]

01:23:41   handwriting application of choice i want [TS]

01:23:43   to scroll horizontally there to get to a [TS]

01:23:45   different icon to send a PDF to like [TS]

01:23:47   that's weird doesn't work here either so [TS]

01:23:50   ago of course like a diligent little [TS]

01:23:52   person I to filed with a little feedback [TS]

01:23:53   things like they had that they had a [TS]

01:23:55   little application that you can use I [TS]

01:23:56   open it up and is like hey just let you [TS]

01:23:58   guys like to know that there's a weird [TS]

01:23:59   bug that i can imagine you might miss [TS]

01:24:01   was like in ibooks and share sheet that [TS]

01:24:03   doesn't scroll properly when you use the [TS]

01:24:05   pencil [TS]

01:24:06   I didn't really think anything about it [TS]

01:24:08   until the second developer beta comes [TS]

01:24:11   out and nothing has changed and then the [TS]

01:24:14   second public beta came out and nothing [TS]

01:24:17   had changed and that's when I started to [TS]

01:24:20   worry because that's when it feels like [TS]

01:24:23   this is in a bug [TS]

01:24:26   this is a decision my concern currently [TS]

01:24:29   is that we have made this bed for [TS]

01:24:33   ourselves what do you mean I think that [TS]

01:24:36   when apple introduced the pencil it work [TS]

01:24:40   the way it did because they didn't [TS]

01:24:43   really think about it they created a [TS]

01:24:45   device that allows you to manipulate iOS [TS]

01:24:47   like a finger would just because it [TS]

01:24:50   recognizes touch [TS]

01:24:52   whoo-hoo so it's just it is what it is [TS]

01:24:54   and in a sign outside of applications of [TS]

01:24:56   its cause you I just because it does [TS]

01:24:58   like didn't really think about it and [TS]

01:25:00   when they saw my feeling is when they [TS]

01:25:03   saw people like me in you and not [TS]

01:25:06   necessarily me and you but you know [TS]

01:25:08   using the ipad like a pen tablet and [TS]

01:25:13   using the pencil like a stylist who they [TS]

01:25:16   decided that that wasn't right for our [TS]

01:25:18   iPad and have removed the function [TS]

01:25:20   that's what I think happened to ya this [TS]

01:25:23   is what I am deeply deeply worried about [TS]

01:25:27   because there's certain things that [TS]

01:25:30   Apple does which just feel super [TS]

01:25:32   appellee yeah and something about [TS]

01:25:35   deciding that thou shan't use the pencil [TS]

01:25:39   as you would use a wacom tablet like [TS]

01:25:43   this is an apple decision [TS]

01:25:45   this is not how we want people using our [TS]

01:25:48   amazing pencil that is for artistes only [TS]

01:25:51   to be sketching in a museum in a way [TS]

01:25:55   that we can film for an apple commercial [TS]

01:25:57   like this is the only thing we want you [TS]

01:26:00   doing with this and we don't want you [TS]

01:26:03   using it any other way [TS]

01:26:04   it just it feels like the kind of thing [TS]

01:26:07   that Apple might decide and I have never [TS]

01:26:14   ever been more upset [TS]

01:26:18   that's about any decision Apple has made [TS]

01:26:22   than this one again assuming that it is [TS]

01:26:24   a decision because I mean look I I we've [TS]

01:26:31   talked about it before on this podcast [TS]

01:26:32   right I'm a person who has had [TS]

01:26:34   repetitive strain injuries in my hands [TS]

01:26:36   for I mean since college going on 15 [TS]

01:26:39   years now this is the thing that I can [TS]

01:26:42   live with because it's a thing that I [TS]

01:26:44   managed and in the course of those 15 [TS]

01:26:47   years with out a doubt the number one [TS]

01:26:51   most effective tool for reducing RSI has [TS]

01:26:55   been using a pen tablet for the vast [TS]

01:26:58   majority of my computer interactions we [TS]

01:27:01   just discussed last time like the very [TS]

01:27:02   excellent way come into his pet tablet [TS]

01:27:04   right which is now sitting on my desk [TS]

01:27:06   which is an amazing piece of hardware [TS]

01:27:08   that I can use to manipulate all parts [TS]

01:27:11   of the computer [TS]

01:27:12   wacom doesn't say oh you can only use [TS]

01:27:15   our pen tablet for drawing wacom says [TS]

01:27:17   now you can use scrollbars you can [TS]

01:27:19   scroll up and down a web page because it [TS]

01:27:21   would be crazy to make you say on a [TS]

01:27:24   desktop computer pick up a mouse like oh [TS]

01:27:27   no you can only you can only interact [TS]

01:27:28   with web pages if you're using a mouse [TS]

01:27:30   I mean we when we talked about it on the [TS]

01:27:32   episode of of cortex which i believe was [TS]

01:27:35   brick of obligation is where i first [TS]

01:27:38   talked about having the ipad pro and [TS]

01:27:42   having this star trek vision of the [TS]

01:27:46   future for how people work with multiple [TS]

01:27:48   screens on a flat table and it is really [TS]

01:27:52   interesting to me that since getting the [TS]

01:27:53   pro since getting the pencil my life has [TS]

01:27:56   become so close to this you know we may [TS]

01:27:59   discuss it next time but like I happen [TS]

01:28:00   to have been traveling for the past two [TS]

01:28:02   weeks almost exclusively i've been using [TS]

01:28:05   my iPad pro flat on a table with my [TS]

01:28:07   iphone this is how i do almost all of my [TS]

01:28:09   work I saw my I saw my wife she actually [TS]

01:28:13   borrowed before i left my ipad pro to do [TS]

01:28:15   some some research for traveling and she [TS]

01:28:18   was sitting at a table with her out with [TS]

01:28:20   my ipad bro with her mini and with her [TS]

01:28:22   phone like arranging a whole bunch of [TS]

01:28:24   stuff like this multiple screen thing is [TS]

01:28:26   obviously the future of computing I [TS]

01:28:30   think for almost everybody [TS]

01:28:31   like just your pieces of paper on a desk [TS]

01:28:33   you're going to have a bunch of screens [TS]

01:28:34   on the desk that's just the way it's [TS]

01:28:36   gonna go because eventually they're [TS]

01:28:38   gonna be that thin as well [TS]

01:28:40   yeah they're going to be that thin [TS]

01:28:41   they're gonna be that cheap and I want [TS]

01:28:43   to have conversations with people about [TS]

01:28:44   this now they laughing maniacally like [TS]

01:28:46   what are you crazy working on multiple [TS]

01:28:47   ip's like that Thomas like but look at [TS]

01:28:50   how many business people have multiple [TS]

01:28:51   pieces of paper on a desk it's just [TS]

01:28:53   gonna happen but my one big concern [TS]

01:28:57   about this prior to the pro is that [TS]

01:29:01   manipulating these screens with your [TS]

01:29:05   hands in what I always think of as [TS]

01:29:07   finger-painting position right like you [TS]

01:29:09   are doing finger paints which is [TS]

01:29:11   extending your fingers out holding your [TS]

01:29:13   hand in this horizontal position it's [TS]

01:29:15   not comfortable to do all day long and [TS]

01:29:20   as someone who has been very aware of [TS]

01:29:23   RSI issues [TS]

01:29:24   I'm very conscious of listening to my [TS]

01:29:27   hands and see if I'm getting any kind of [TS]

01:29:29   feedback about is this a potential for [TS]

01:29:32   repetitive strain and I am totally aware [TS]

01:29:34   that if you want to use iPads all day [TS]

01:29:37   long i can get repetitive strain injury [TS]

01:29:39   from that I have gotten repetitive [TS]

01:29:41   strain injury from using iPads in this [TS]

01:29:43   position now some people go i use iPads [TS]

01:29:45   all day and I never have a problem like [TS]

01:29:47   that's great i'm happy for you but not [TS]

01:29:50   everybody falls into this category and [TS]

01:29:52   so when the pencil came it was just [TS]

01:29:57   amazing to me because i thought wow I am [TS]

01:30:00   looking at the next 10 years of my [TS]

01:30:03   computing life i can use a precision [TS]

01:30:06   pointing tool to interact with a flat [TS]

01:30:09   screen on a desk in a maximally [TS]

01:30:12   comfortable way in a way that i can do [TS]

01:30:14   for 12 hours in a row without any [TS]

01:30:18   problems and i know because i have been [TS]

01:30:21   doing that because i was so upset by [TS]

01:30:24   what is happening with the beta's like I [TS]

01:30:25   went through all the trouble of rolling [TS]

01:30:28   back my iPad because it that i can't i [TS]

01:30:31   can't use the ipad that in this hybrid [TS]

01:30:33   way of like trying to switch back and [TS]

01:30:35   forth between using the pen and then [TS]

01:30:37   putting it down or trying to awkwardly [TS]

01:30:39   like with my ring finger scroll things [TS]

01:30:41   on the screen while still holding the [TS]

01:30:42   pen like it's just an off [TS]

01:30:44   full awful experience and i am really [TS]

01:30:48   worried that if this is the decision [TS]

01:30:50   that Apple has made what I'm looking at [TS]

01:30:52   is the future of my computing experience [TS]

01:30:57   and the future of the computing [TS]

01:30:59   experience for anybody who has RSI [TS]

01:31:01   problems or just handed manipulation [TS]

01:31:04   problems being artificially crippled [TS]

01:31:07   because someone at apple doesn't want [TS]

01:31:11   people to use iPads in this way that's [TS]

01:31:14   what I am just so worried about the [TS]

01:31:16   thing that annoys me the most about this [TS]

01:31:18   is he didn't want it to do this you [TS]

01:31:21   could have just done this from the start [TS]

01:31:24   yeah you should have done this from the [TS]

01:31:26   start yeah because you've given it and [TS]

01:31:29   now you are taking it away [TS]

01:31:30   yeah right i'm sitting here like almost [TS]

01:31:32   trembling at with like fury and [TS]

01:31:35   upsetness over this because like you [TS]

01:31:38   gave me a taste of the computing future [TS]

01:31:41   that i always want that i need and now [TS]

01:31:45   you are taking it away just because and [TS]

01:31:49   this wouldn't be the first time that [TS]

01:31:51   Apple's done something like this like it [TS]

01:31:52   with this kind of reminds me of is the [TS]

01:31:54   whole kerfuffle that happened over with [TS]

01:31:56   the today view on iphones when they [TS]

01:31:59   first came out and that was a case of [TS]

01:32:01   like okay [TS]

01:32:02   Apple allow people to put things into [TS]

01:32:04   this notification center and everybody [TS]

01:32:07   was calling them widgets and like oh let [TS]

01:32:09   me build all these new things with the [TS]

01:32:10   widgets but Apple clearly had some idea [TS]

01:32:12   of like no this is the today view we [TS]

01:32:15   only want you to use it to quickly [TS]

01:32:17   access information about today you [TS]

01:32:19   should look at your calendar and you [TS]

01:32:21   should check the weather here but if you [TS]

01:32:23   want to put a calculator in here no no [TS]

01:32:25   no that's not how we envision you doing [TS]

01:32:28   this thing like they've eventually good [TS]

01:32:30   seeded the ground on that but it was a [TS]

01:32:32   weird time for Apple was just they had [TS]

01:32:36   some idea about how they want you to do [TS]

01:32:38   things and like okay Apple that's great [TS]

01:32:40   but if you give people tools they're [TS]

01:32:42   going to come up with better ways to use [TS]

01:32:44   them then you can think of every [TS]

01:32:47   possible way to use the thing and I feel [TS]

01:32:50   like this is the same case with the [TS]

01:32:51   pencil like someone has an idea of how [TS]

01:32:53   they want people to use the pencil but [TS]

01:32:55   people like me [TS]

01:32:58   has been speaking to other people who [TS]

01:32:59   use the pencil they want to use it like [TS]

01:33:03   it's a wacom tablet and I think being [TS]

01:33:06   able to use it like it's a wacom tablet [TS]

01:33:09   is way more powerful than what Apple had [TS]

01:33:12   envisioned for the pencil and they [TS]

01:33:14   should roll with it like go with this [TS]

01:33:17   Apple this is good for you [TS]

01:33:20   this is good for the users yeah don't [TS]

01:33:22   artificially limit this because it's not [TS]

01:33:26   how you envision people using your [TS]

01:33:28   pretty tablet one of class to use my [TS]

01:33:30   finger [TS]

01:33:31   yeah why does it have to be my finger [TS]

01:33:34   yeah cool [TS]

01:33:35   I don't understand like my think my [TS]

01:33:39   thinking about it so try and rationalize [TS]

01:33:40   it i'm assuming that they have something [TS]

01:33:43   else that they want to do with it right [TS]

01:33:46   now hmm that this doesn't allow and if [TS]

01:33:49   that's the case i can understand it they [TS]

01:33:52   tell me all I know right now is this is [TS]

01:33:56   how it is now there is a as we stand [TS]

01:33:59   right now there is a strong potential [TS]

01:34:01   that 9.3 we released with the ipad air [TS]

01:34:04   three which will also support the pencil [TS]

01:34:07   so there might be more functionality [TS]

01:34:10   coming to the Apple pencil which could [TS]

01:34:13   explain why this case if that is the [TS]

01:34:17   case also won't be happy with it i'll be [TS]

01:34:19   more willing to accept it but if the [TS]

01:34:21   reasoning is purely what mean you feel [TS]

01:34:24   right now I consider unacceptable right [TS]

01:34:29   i mean look I cannot imagine a use case [TS]

01:34:33   that would justify this decision not [TS]

01:34:36   neither can i but it's like as if they [TS]

01:34:38   have a they have a reason something they [TS]

01:34:41   want to do i can at least see they're [TS]

01:34:42   thinking right now it just looks like he [TS]

01:34:45   just being petty [TS]

01:34:46   yeah I mean we discussed on the previous [TS]

01:34:49   episodes how the pencil doesn't allow [TS]

01:34:52   you to operate what I think of as the [TS]

01:34:53   meta user interface which is opening up [TS]

01:34:56   splitview pulling down notification [TS]

01:34:58   center opening up control center and we [TS]

01:35:00   discussed on that episode [TS]

01:35:01   oh that's kind of weird at first but you [TS]

01:35:04   can immediately see why that if you want [TS]

01:35:06   to do edge swipe gestures with the [TS]

01:35:08   pencil you can also [TS]

01:35:10   have that yeah i'm activating it that [TS]

01:35:13   meta interface it just it just won't [TS]

01:35:15   work [TS]

01:35:15   okay i can understand that if you have a [TS]

01:35:17   drawing program you want to be able to [TS]

01:35:19   draw in from the edge but if i'm on a [TS]

01:35:22   webpage and I want to use the Apple [TS]

01:35:25   pencil to scroll that webpage what the [TS]

01:35:29   fuck else would I be doing with that [TS]

01:35:32   pencil on that webpage [TS]

01:35:34   yeah right like why do you just say no [TS]

01:35:37   you're not allowed to do that i like [TS]

01:35:38   that here's the feeling that I have from [TS]

01:35:40   that is when i was running the beta [TS]

01:35:42   every time i tried to school something I [TS]

01:35:44   thought the ipad might as well just make [TS]

01:35:46   an angry buzzing noise right like that [TS]

01:35:48   little sound that the mac does when it [TS]

01:35:49   does something you don't like it goes [TS]

01:35:50   right and i feel like you know what why [TS]

01:35:54   don't you just make the Pro go there [TS]

01:35:55   every time I try to scroll with a web [TS]

01:35:57   page because that's the feeling that [TS]

01:35:59   you're giving me I open to share sheet i [TS]

01:36:00   want to scroll horizontally in it right [TS]

01:36:02   now I'm reading a book i want to scroll [TS]

01:36:04   the page with the pencil because it's [TS]

01:36:06   more comfortable for me to hold this [TS]

01:36:07   pencil in my hand to always use with my [TS]

01:36:09   fingers [TS]

01:36:10   nope we're not gonna let you do that [TS]

01:36:12   it's it's infuriating and it feels [TS]

01:36:16   almost aggressive towards the user [TS]

01:36:18   because there's just no reason for it [TS]

01:36:20   now can I do want to stress that we [TS]

01:36:23   don't know if this is a decision within [TS]

01:36:25   Apple but man when it's been 2 beta is [TS]

01:36:28   later it certainly feels like it's a [TS]

01:36:30   decision we're preparing for the worst [TS]

01:36:32   based on the fact that we notice company [TS]

01:36:34   and I want to just just want to get this [TS]

01:36:37   out there now we use apple products we [TS]

01:36:40   love apple products we know this stuff [TS]

01:36:42   happens here it's really annoying [TS]

01:36:44   we're not going to switch the windows [TS]

01:36:46   surface it's extremely unlikely because [TS]

01:36:48   there are many reasons of them just this [TS]

01:36:51   that we use our devices [TS]

01:36:53   yeah that is but that is precisely why [TS]

01:36:55   this is so upsetting is being as I look [TS]

01:36:58   around and there are no other options [TS]

01:36:59   for all the things that I want to do [TS]

01:37:01   including transition costs that can do [TS]

01:37:04   what I want to do because it's like [TS]

01:37:05   people go why don't we just a place like [TS]

01:37:07   okay listen you understand i don't use [TS]

01:37:08   one markdown text editor i use five four [TS]

01:37:12   different things like I have a lot of [TS]

01:37:14   specific needs here that are only met by [TS]

01:37:16   this ecosystem and so that is precisely [TS]

01:37:19   why this is so upsetting it's like I [TS]

01:37:20   don't have an alternative [TS]

01:37:23   and I've you in this moment if Apple [TS]

01:37:26   makes this decision the way that I'm [TS]

01:37:28   afraid they're going to i am facing who [TS]

01:37:31   knows how many years of having to use [TS]

01:37:34   this thing in a limited way and and like [TS]

01:37:37   going going back to one of our earlier [TS]

01:37:39   discussions about jailbreaking I have [TS]

01:37:43   never been so close to be tempted by [TS]

01:37:47   jailbreaking then I am with this vision [TS]

01:37:50   of apple releasing the software and not [TS]

01:37:53   allowing you to use the pencil to [TS]

01:37:55   interact with all of the interface and I [TS]

01:37:57   feel like Apple what justification could [TS]

01:38:01   you possibly have to put me in a [TS]

01:38:03   situation where i am making a decision [TS]

01:38:06   between do I want to protect my digital [TS]

01:38:10   security or do I want to protect the [TS]

01:38:14   health of my hands [TS]

01:38:17   that is the the rock and the hard place [TS]

01:38:19   that I find myself between like okay am [TS]

01:38:23   I going to jailbreak an ipad pro in the [TS]

01:38:25   future because I can tell how much [TS]

01:38:26   benefit i get from being able to use it [TS]

01:38:28   like this or am I not and just going to [TS]

01:38:32   accept that I'm going to have problems [TS]

01:38:33   with my hands that I'm going to have to [TS]

01:38:36   limit the amount of time that I spend on [TS]

01:38:38   iPads as i have done in the past when i [TS]

01:38:40   try to use them in the way that i have [TS]

01:38:43   been gloriously using perhaps my [TS]

01:38:45   favorite product that apple has released [TS]

01:38:46   in the past five years that that's why [TS]

01:38:50   it is it is to help setting and listen [TS]

01:38:53   listeners I want right now to try to [TS]

01:38:57   call on the power of six degrees of [TS]

01:39:00   separation someone listening to this [TS]

01:39:03   podcast knows someone at Apple yeah who [TS]

01:39:07   knows the team that is in charge of this [TS]

01:39:11   decision i am deadly serious about what [TS]

01:39:14   I am about to say I will fly to [TS]

01:39:19   cupertino at any time at my own expense [TS]

01:39:23   for the opportunity to have five minutes [TS]

01:39:29   with that team to try and convince them [TS]

01:39:33   to change this decision [TS]

01:39:35   I'm deadly serious about this [TS]

01:39:39   this is how important this is to me [TS]

01:39:41   because i am thinking about the health [TS]

01:39:46   of my hands i am willing to go to great [TS]

01:39:49   cost and vastly greater opportunity cost [TS]

01:39:53   to try and influence this in what I view [TS]

01:39:57   as the only same direction [TS]

01:40:01   my ideal result here is the result that [TS]

01:40:05   I think makes the most sense considering [TS]

01:40:08   the use case that we both desire is that [TS]

01:40:11   this becomes a preference in [TS]

01:40:13   accessibility please please let this [TS]

01:40:17   become a preference in accessibility if [TS]

01:40:19   nothing else [TS]

01:40:20   yeah like that if that's the only thing [TS]

01:40:22   i can get apple if you have some some [TS]

01:40:24   kind of magic that you think you're [TS]

01:40:26   going to be able to do with the pencil [TS]

01:40:27   by not letting me scroll and safari I [TS]

01:40:30   don't want it don't care I don't care [TS]

01:40:33   what it is you could offer me nothing [TS]

01:40:37   that i would take in exchange for this [TS]

01:40:40   it's I mean it's just like if if Apple [TS]

01:40:43   came to my house and took away all my [TS]

01:40:44   Wacom tablets and then disabled Wacom [TS]

01:40:47   tablets from ever working on my computer [TS]

01:40:48   and they handed me a million dollars i [TS]

01:40:51   would say please give me the wacom [TS]

01:40:53   tablet back because i can't buy new [TS]

01:40:55   hands with a million dollars that's the [TS]

01:40:58   situation that I'm in here so I'm just [TS]

01:41:02   I'm very nervous about this mike i am [TS]

01:41:05   very nervous about this [TS]
