The Incomparable

218: Three Dads and a Superfast Baby

the interminable number 280 November [TS]

everybody welcome back to being [TS]

comfortable i'm your host Jason smell [TS]

and we're here to talk about the fall TV [TS]

season we like to do this every year [TS]

this was actually one of our very first [TS]

  episodes that we did [TS]

I've assembled a group of people who [TS]

watch television shows and they have [TS]

comments about new shows and returning [TS]

shows and hopefully what you'll get out [TS]

of this is some ideas about shows you [TS]

might watch and also shows you might [TS]

want to point at and laugh [TS]

joining me to talk about the fall TV [TS]

season are these fine people Monty [TS]

ashley is there hi Monty hi Jason [TS]

I've been watching television constantly [TS]

yes you you are somebody who writes [TS]

about television as one of the things [TS]

that you do sometimes i do i write about [TS]

television that previously that TV [TS]

that's right that's very exciting [TS]

Lisa Schmeisser is also here Lisa hi [TS]

nice to be here are you writing about [TS]

television somewhere right now i just [TS]

turned up my first blog post for the [TS]

Atlantic so if they like it [TS]

I'm hoping to parlay I see ya and they [TS]

have to like it first but if anybody's [TS]

looking for somebody to write about TV [TS]

  please consider me [TS]

alright excellent and you you are also [TS]

recapping sons of anarchy on the TV pod [TS]

yeah almost like and i are doing the [TS]

flash cast four sons of anarchy this [TS]

year i love it when you do a podcast [TS]

with people named Philip M so this week [TS]

I was confusing but my guess is also [TS]

here hello Phillip Michaels hello it's [TS]

great to be here on TV talk machine [TS]

applique wait what thank you for that [TS]

cross promotion that we will pick up on [TS]

  later [TS]

yes dr you writing about television for [TS]

outlets at this point yes i'm also [TS]

  writing about previously [TS]

i'm also reading for previously TV where [TS]

  I i hasten to say I'm the second-best [TS]

previously dot TV writer on this podcast [TS]

very nice very nice gain more and also [TS]

hear how Dan i'm watching TV right now [TS]

your head but not writing about that [TS]

sure i'm not writing about yeah I mean [TS]

he'll if someone wants to pay me to [TS]

write about television i have a lot of [TS]

opinions right fair enough that's so so [TS]

if Lisa's it turns down your offer then [TS]

go to 10 more and that's what we said [TS]

and also David jail or is here because [TS]

he's on every podcast hi David a second [TS]

  lieutenant [TS]

I hands on every other podcast on over [TS]

yeah i've got all kinds of shows to [TS]

point and laugh at but some of them are [TS]

even comedies top so because that's a [TS]

  good sign [TS]

so that's what that's our panel we're [TS]

going to talk about the fall stuff and [TS]

we should talk about new shows [TS]

first I am going to throw out a show [TS]

first I and this is not a draft we're [TS]

going to talk about whatever you guys [TS]

want to talk about I thought it was all [TS]

  interact always yeah probably [TS]

ok everyone gets phil hartman yes yes [TS]

but so I i want to talk about the flash [TS]

which is on the CW and I've been [TS]

watching and I don't watch [TS]

  i I don't I never watch smallville I [TS]

don't watch arrow I'm like four episodes [TS]

in the first season of arrow i hear its [TS]

good people like it but I've been [TS]

watching the flash and I I've been [TS]

really enjoying it i think it's a lot of [TS]

  fun [TS]

what are you getting lisa is oh my god [TS]

  yes [TS]

first of all I'd i am a huge huge arrow [TS]

fan and one of these days I'm going to [TS]

have to Shanghai somebody else into [TS]

talking about it with me so it's not [TS]

just a 40 minute podcast and be going I [TS]

know damn good and you can be there [TS]

I'm all for that yeah we have to talk [TS]

about John Barrowman because he's just [TS]

the best oh my gosh um but I I've been [TS]

enjoying the flash but it's nice to have [TS]

a superhero series where the superhero [TS]

is not particularly conflicted about his [TS]

burden or his responsibilities and he [TS]

appears to have interests outside of his [TS]

feelings and yes and thanks to do a job [TS]

tom cab and Jesse L Martin's is kind of [TS]

killing it is the you know they did that [TS]

to you kids dad figure as a dad cop [TS]

yesterday but but his razor so it's not [TS]

just you just one forearm is his name i [TS]

think i think i'm lieutenant dad copped [TS]

that is actually i think what makes him [TS]

so effective his life he brings a little [TS]

bit of gravitas to it so it's not like [TS]

all you kids who were 22 years old [TS]

it's like a lot of emotional resonance [TS]

some of us have jobs here [TS]

yeah and I love Tom Cavanagh performance [TS]

so far because they have found yes they [TS]

have found the right role for his brand [TS]

of kind of twitchy weird and ability [TS]

that was you know that was the thing [TS]

  that was [TS]

always a little unsettling about a dude [TS]

is is this is a stalker who bought a [TS]

bowling alley and then have someone out [TS]

there out of mary rogers county wearing [TS]

hers on cute with it there's like this [TS]

weird undercurrent of like it could it [TS]

could have gone either way he could have [TS]

wanted to find Carol Bessie's face one [TS]

of those days that Lord out and [TS]

admittedly Edward have been much more [TS]

enjoyable have an episode ended with EDD [TS]

  stabbing someone [TS]

lovely Michael Ian Black yeah but it's [TS]

  here his whole family [TS]

  I'm a restrained damage genius-guy until [TS]

i get to my magical Braille script from [TS]

the future and read newspapers from 20 [TS]

years for nothing that's great okay good [TS]

haha i love also waiting and waiting [TS]

they're gonna be still be newspapers one [TS]

hears no that'sthat's bets book that's [TS]

actually can do Sabres believes [TS]

believable thing about this show [TS]

make him run fast sure but newspapers no [TS]

actually one thing that made me laugh as [TS]

they wanted it so badly to be a [TS]

newspaper from the future but they're [TS]

like this is implausible so it's like a [TS]

web page from the future yeah okay I [TS]

guess whatever at least it's like a nap [TS]

where he's loading the iphoto the future [TS]

and it's embedded in his skull and he's [TS]

like oh and I see from my eye out that [TS]

I'm just glad the headline wasn't [TS]

something along the lines of you won't [TS]

believe what happened to the flash up [TS]

the brain newspaper would like to send [TS]

you push notification there's actually [TS]

an easter egg in that in that newspaper [TS]

to which which talks about a Wayne [TS]

  Enterprises merger with Queen [TS]

consolidated oh really i'm getting yeah [TS]

yes the whole shows full of Easter eggs [TS]

one thing i love about it is that just [TS]

it's packed like every character is [TS]

named the secret identity of some d-list [TS]

superhero yeah so if you know your stuff [TS]

you can be like that guy's vibe [TS]

he's gonna start breakdancing any second [TS]

  causing earthquakes [TS]

incidentally I that character cisco is [TS]

also i love that they've used him as [TS]

sort of the audience proxy in that so [TS]

the flash has the most probably i would [TS]

argue the most ridiculous supervillain [TS]

  nemesis [TS]

yeah he's right mindset to come up with [TS]

the name from which we haven't really [TS]

because i'm just waiting for all these [TS]

moments with like McLean captain [TS]

boomerangs can have to show up [TS]

eventually and you just know he's gonna [TS]

be like oh yeah the captain Byrne [TS]

  Captain Cold [TS]

more master come on it's the outback [TS]

assaulter in the like Cisco shut up [TS]

  because the good [TS]

no no wait it's the little Menace know [TS]

so I loved one of the things i like [TS]

about the grant gustin is that his name [TS]

yes yeah adorable oh my gosh she's above [TS]

zero first of these it's funny because [TS]

he's playing like 22 but for 23 or [TS]

whatever which is his actual age but [TS]

he's a kind of actor he's an actor of an [TS]

age that they would just cast him as a [TS]

high school kid and say sure he's a high [TS]

school kid except he's in this he's not [TS]

but he's really likable and seems really [TS]

young so you get the sense that he's [TS]

he's like young and idealistic and just [TS]

learning about the world and but what I [TS]

really like about it is it's got that [TS]

almost like that first that like the Sam [TS]

Raimi's spider-man movies kind of thing [TS]

where it's like light like Peter Parker [TS]

he's like just this guy he's narrating [TS]

his own life and it's like this stuff [TS]

happen to me i'm trying to figure it out [TS]

he's really likable character and and [TS]

and it except without that like super XD [TS]

mean his he's got the history and his [TS]

dad's in jail and all that and yet he [TS]

did he never seems like a wet blanket [TS]

which I like i have to point out i am [TS]

glad you mentioned spider-man here [TS]

because i'm really looking forward to in [TS]

10 years when Grant Gustin play [TS]

  spider-man [TS]

yeah that's where things are going he's [TS]

channeling the andrew garfield thing [TS]

yeah yeah I guess I agree it's nice you [TS]

know especially in counterpoint to arrow [TS]

which this started as a spin-off of you [TS]

know an arrow is great but really on the [TS]

sort of like dark side and they take [TS]

everything very everything is very [TS]

realistic and gritty like there aren't [TS]

super powers on there and so not only if [TS]

they diverged and said like okay let's [TS]

do a show that's all about like actual [TS]

people with superpowers but at the same [TS]

time let's also kind of make it lighter [TS]

and more comic booky in some way let's [TS]

have a lighter too and let's have jokes [TS]

and let's have a you know charismatic [TS]

people here and I think it really really [TS]

works but it introduces problems when [TS]

they eventually cross those series over [TS]

cuz like which that it was just like [TS]

right how do you just not call the flash [TS]

every time you have a problem like oh [TS]

man that guy he keeps getting away from [TS]

us let's call our friend who runs really [TS]

takes like 15 minutes from to run their [TS]

it's come on it's easy and us to more [TS]

general that way it's hungry actually [TS]

really like the fact that was the that [TS]

was what they realized about him is like [TS]

wow you use a lot of calories you you're [TS]

gonna pass out you know I knew it was [TS]

  coming the energy bars [TS]

in the justice in the Justice League [TS]

version they do that 285 what is it like [TS]

  85 tacos [TS]

yeah I thought I was good but it's a fun [TS]

show I mean I remember like the flash [TS]

from the show from the nineties with [TS]

with john wesley shipp who is the dad [TS]

invented really nice little call back [TS]

but that was a that was very much like [TS]

the TV version of the Michael Keaton [TS]

Batman movies and and the this flash is [TS]

it's just lighter and fun and I think [TS]

that the the having tom cavanagh having [TS]

Jesse L Martin adds that adds a little [TS]

bit of weight to it that's really nice [TS]

and he's got his team like at the [TS]

science lab at STAR Labs and so it's [TS]

also not like he's a loner and only I [TS]

can do this like spider-man is right [TS]

soon instead it's like team flashes [TS]

there and there and there is a conflict [TS]

of like Tom Cavanagh says that he want [TS]

he just wants to take care of berry but [TS]

jesse martin wants to take care of Barry [TS]

  I just gets it's a really dad it's a [TS]

good to my two dads reboot it actually [TS]

it's actually three dads if you can't [TS]

jail that the tensor well yeah how could [TS]

we forget chill dad totally Marva three [TS]

men and a shiner past big here's why I [TS]

like flashing my three dads tables its [TS]

kind of the exact opposite of arrow [TS]

where is no it's their storage spaces [TS]

military yeah there are no dad even when [TS]

dads are physically present and dropping [TS]

paternity bombs on on poor people in [TS]

there are still no dad's president sad [TS]

dadless show Dad freakshow even and so [TS]

so having s'mores exactly the opposite [TS]

where berries all I need you guys you're [TS]

my teammate like rod team flash to flush [TS]

rotation rate and it cuts through a lot [TS]

of the BS that in mind I love arrow but [TS]

like about fifteen percent of the [TS]

  conflict is completely unnecessary [TS]

because it's it's all over [TS]

no no I can't too many people I care [TS]

about get hurt by what i do and people [TS]

like Oliver knock it off and they've [TS]

managed to cut out that fifteen percent [TS]

here it's great but the study of the [TS]

strongest parts of arrow were always [TS]

been team like when the team developed [TS]

later in the first series like ya mero [TS]

parts are definitely stronger parts of [TS]

the show and so with the flash they're [TS]

smart enough to be like yeah we gotta do [TS]

this from the get-go working there's [TS]

people who know who he is [TS]

it's not like oh I have to keep my [TS]

identity secret from everybody and I [TS]

think that the secret anything like that [TS]

rope is just were in a period where [TS]

that's kind of like in [TS]

low and we're not gonna do that right [TS]

now we're going to worry about that [TS]

  dilemma [TS]

I'll be in terrible at keeping it is [TS]

hehe is everyone you know [TS]

yeah it's actually really love that it's [TS]

great for went on the show but the one [TS]

guy who was in charge of finding out who [TS]

you are so I i have a bit of a I guess [TS]

unique perspective i do why do you hit [TS]

the flash well because know you have [TS]

your the second fastest man alive and [TS]

  for windows that exactly [TS]

I you know I don't like funny books and [TS]

I don't really like shows about funny [TS]

books and I'm kind of iffy on people who [TS]

do like you forget I know where he lives [TS]

I I do very much enjoy the flash I i [TS]

find myself looking forward to the flash [TS]

yeah the flash has the seal of approval [TS]

hey all you to listeners of the [TS]

incomparable you don't really care for [TS]

  comic books [TS]

this is an ok show that the other people [TS]

who write in and say I wish you would [TS]

never talk about comic books exactly [TS]

yeah that would be me writing under [TS]

various aliases and I understand but [TS]

yeah I i like it in a way that the few [TS]

  times I've seen arrow [TS]

I don't like my arrow has kind of a a [TS]

nineteen nineties basic cable field [TS]

  goals were ouch [TS]

no it doesn't know I'm sorry [TS]

now if they ever do the Black Canary [TS]

spin-off i am watching that show that's [TS]

a great show but in your mind but what [TS]

flash is a just really well put together [TS]

for all the all the reasons you outlined [TS]

even if you're even if you don't sit [TS]

there with your your your DC Comics [TS]

checklist yeah and up until previously I [TS]

had no idea there was a guy named vibe [TS]

now I do so I've learned something today [TS]

  i'm with you because i am a i'm a Marvel [TS]

Comics guy so although i love the the [TS]

funny books and the superhero genre I I [TS]

don't know any of the Baxter I mean I [TS]

lot like Barry Allen and iris I i know a [TS]

little tiny bit of flash but very little [TS]

and so I don't get any other references [TS]

and this matter because it'sit's I like [TS]

that it's not super angsty and that [TS]

there's a really nice ensemble around [TS]

  them [TS]

that the main character is kind of [TS]

winning and you want to root for enemies [TS]

not you know I I like him I actually do [TS]

want to root for him which honestly [TS]

there's a lot of superhero things you [TS]

  like yeah [TS]

get over yourself right but he's he's a [TS]

lot what Barry Barry Allen to do well in [TS]

and for his dad to get out of jail all [TS]

those things and just yell Martin to to [TS]

you know it embraces a his role as his [TS]

surrogate father and all i want all that [TS]

and I you know I even like you know Tom [TS]

Cavan eyes his mysterious future stabbed [TS]

and dudes rail office from the future [TS]

yeah i'm convinced that the dots on the [TS]

wall or elaborate data encoding systems [TS]

and the pattern not something she lost [TS]

all of its installing from the TARDIS [TS]

yeah sure you know whatever it is it's [TS]

not just the randomly now the only weak [TS]

part of the show for me to be honest is [TS]

  iris yeah [TS]

yes I I feel like it's and to be fair [TS]

it's a tough character because you have [TS]

to have somebody who is is smart and [TS]

funny and and clearly can go toe-to-toe [TS]

with Barry and yet has somehow managed [TS]

to miss the fact that this guy [TS]

practically has cartoon hearts popping [TS]

out his eyeballs every time he looks at [TS]

her but the performances in quite [TS]

landing with me and I can't put my [TS]

finger on why but every time is on the [TS]

screen like modeling they're smart [TS]

enough to sort of rejigger that as they [TS]

I think they kind of have done with [TS]

arrow we asked set up a very like in the [TS]

beginning of that show it set up a very [TS]

clear sort of like love interest and [TS]

then they realized wow he's really not a [TS]

  bad story at all [TS]

hey everyone's responding to these other [TS]

Jew and chemistry so maybe they'll go to [TS]

summer direction you can tell that they [TS]

lead it with arrow because they have [TS]

literally thrown almost every other [TS]

woman who's working in Los Angeles out [TS]

and just to see what will stick and [TS]

because the original it's just but I [TS]

like that they're doing that I like that [TS]

they're actually breaking free of [TS]

cannoneer because it it we may actually [TS]

see green arrow were green arrow and [TS]

black Canary just decide they're better [TS]

off as friends just but yeah exactly and [TS]

that'd be refreshing take on that whole [TS]

arc there is something I don't like [TS]

about flash and this is kind of nitpicky [TS]

and I do not apologize for it but a lot [TS]

  of times [TS]

Barry will be running really fast and [TS]

Cisco is talking to him over the head [TS]

phones but this thing to don't sync up [TS]

  at all [TS]

look like in this last episode there's a [TS]

time when Barry over ran where he was [TS]

going to supposed to go for by a couple [TS]

of blocks and Cisco's like Barry Barry [TS]

stop you missed it by two blocks by the [TS]

time you finish saying that at the speed [TS]

Barry was going he should have been out [TS]

of the city but maybe was yeah fair [TS]

enough haha yeah maybe he wasn't running [TS]

at full speed that up like a point [TS]

coming up because I mean there's enough [TS]

nerdly bring their one can truly say one [TS]

of these days you're going to run faster [TS]

than sound and we have to find a way to [TS]

be able to communicate with you and then [TS]

Tom cabins characters like I may have a [TS]

theory and we find out this is how he [TS]

pops back and forth between here and the [TS]

future is he's figured out how to [TS]

origami space and time into CB radio [TS]

wavelengths there's something to be [TS]

register time that would be cool but [TS]

historically flash comics have just [TS]

ignored this problem you'll just have to [TS]

go now I'm great at the speed of light I [TS]

appreciate our finger on why they've [TS]

ignored and probably one of the greatest [TS]

things about DC adaptations for TV [TS]

though no one of the great things about [TS]

do DC adaptations for TV though is [TS]

they've actually managed to throw out a [TS]

lot of the cannon stuff for a lot of the [TS]

historic problems that they're like you [TS]

know it's not gonna plant in eight this [TS]

i love that they've done that with arrow [TS]

where they have streamlined a lot of the [TS]

stuff and instead of making ride junkie [TS]

its just oh my got injected with some [TS]

crazy super soldiers to royal thing and [TS]

he now has a big feelings about that so [TS]

you know that there's no one there but [TS]

they also sort of tip their hat we had a [TS]

nice like they they don't they don't [TS]

throw everything out like probably you [TS]

know they they tip their hand and they [TS]

put in the Easter eggs and stuff to make [TS]

people who are comic fans be like oh [TS]

that thing I totally recognize what that [TS]

thing is thats related to this other [TS]

thing but they're not going to strictly [TS]

they don't they don't consider like a [TS]

straitjacket of like we've got to follow [TS]

yeah and I think that's actually one of [TS]

the DC I think that's why DC does a [TS]

better job of adapting to the television [TS]

universe are we need to we move on yes [TS]

we can move onto a flash cast we can to [TS]

Gotham for vacationers yes indeed police [TS]

and we should talk about the other one [TS]

yeah just Gotham that's making of DC [TS]

adaptations this of course is the [TS]

identity before before they were super [TS]

villains when they were clearly failing [TS]

its Gotham with Christina coz is Jim [TS]

Henson's Gotham baby but the kid from [TS]

  the OC a [TS]

Commissioner Gordon and uh yeah so what [TS]

remember all the things we said about [TS]

flash having a light touch so that every [TS]

week when it comes on my my oldest son [TS]

just sees the time when he goes got ham [TS]

  and nope [TS]

anyway depends get Smith does he have a [TS]

whole she's still but she's named yeah [TS]

she's a completely different show than [TS]

everybody else like feeling well gonna [TS]

finger on it when you tweeted last week [TS]

that Gotham is three different shows and [TS]

only different shows and only one of [TS]

  them is good [TS]

yeah so okay so whatever and you don't [TS]

even want to watch that one okay [TS]

the three the three shows are one show [TS]

is a is DC villain factory where you [TS]

meet like all the ability was like [TS]

  absolutely have to [TS]

Mr Freeze used to just be a guy who [TS]

liked ice cubes know to be honest that [TS]

sounds like the next that sounds like [TS]

the next dumb project runway like you [TS]

would have Tim Gunn and heidi klum [TS]

hosting DC villain factoring every week [TS]

Tim going to be like oh you're spend X [TS]

isn't isn't quite snapping to when you [TS]

run go make that work it would all be [TS]

great i would watch that this pilot is [TS]

especially bad at this words literally [TS]

like hello I just happen to be a crime [TS]

scene tech named Edward make my I enjoy [TS]

riddles but what what does that matter [TS]

and it's like we call we call him the [TS]

penguin because he walks funny bahaha [TS]

and look I found a card it's a joker [TS]

what the last episode they really dialed [TS]

back the edward nygma dive going to be [TS]

the riddler around here you just kind of [TS]

smiles creepily and I think that's great [TS]

um that's show number one show number [TS]

two is a is Bruce Wayne tortured boy [TS]

genius and asses that is a double dog [TS]

dragged over here and then show 3 which [TS]

is the sort of good one is is the kid [TS]

from the OC and and Donal Logue having [TS]

their they're good cop bad cop [TS]

adventures together and I kind of like [TS]

the interplay between them and I would I [TS]

ate it it it reminds me of a version of [TS]

terriers honest but still good enough to [TS]

where i go Terriers i wish i was [TS]

watching that right now but this is ok [TS]

yeah if you get rid of all the other [TS]

shows and also ben mckenzie I think I'm [TS]

totally into this show low move to a new [TS]

  city [TS]

  oh and [TS]

and then there's jada pinkett smith who [TS]

is no now I think it was it was someone [TS]

else on Twitter who said this but boy [TS]

she is sheets landed on that landed on [TS]

that character is just sticking with it [TS]

I think she saw one minute of Eartha [TS]

Kitt and then oh that's what that was [TS]

for like here I go [TS]

it feels like sort of a third wave [TS]

feminist reinterpretation of Eartha Kitt [TS]

and like they got all the sex positivity [TS]

in there but they kind of forgot the [TS]

rest of it it's it's it's really loud [TS]

and weird and broad and I don't like it [TS]

  at all [TS]

whatever what if we took a bad Andre [TS]

Braugher impersonation and made a woman [TS]

i'm not sure telling straight girls to [TS]

seduce you counts as sex positive so [TS]

  much as just weird [TS]

yeah well the shuttles has a really [TS]

weird attitude towards lesbianism too [TS]

because there they treat Barbara's [TS]

dalliance with Renee Montoya as some [TS]

sort of weird guilty shameful secret [TS]

which is complete and and it's like to [TS]

feel my we had a discussion about this [TS]

like half an hour we were trying to [TS]

figure out when exactly Gotham is [TS]

supposed to be set because parts of it [TS]

are weirdly contemporary so we're trying [TS]

to figure out if the homophobia is it [TS]

supposed to be like socially consistent [TS]

with the time the show is set in or if [TS]

it's just the right Israel in girls with [TS]

  each other [TS]

I'm both fascinating and recalled it's a [TS]

show written by nineteen-year-old Boyd's [TS]

boys for 12 year old boys I would be [TS]

happy to worry about that but with [TS]

Barbara just hung up on wondering is she [TS]

actually living in a clock tower [TS]

oh she's the worst or does she just have [TS]

a lock painted on the outside of room we [TS]

don't I wonder if it's supposed to be a [TS]

mirage to the eventual oracle living in [TS]

the closet having like the clock tower [TS]

HQ and any of that old but when the [TS]

other times but we know that this barber [TS]

doesn't become oracle like her job is [TS]

basically to give birth to an awesome [TS]

robot Barbara Gordon and then I [TS]

disappear but I I think Barbara that the [TS]

Barbara Gordon character and or the [TS]

actress is like one of the biggest [TS]

weakness she tell you every time you use [TS]

a screen the worst character in that [TS]

show although all the Jada Pinkett is [TS]

also a senior shareware so jaded and get [TS]

short you're writing it you can do a [TS]

data-rich for the stuff and let's not [TS]

let's not let let's not let the kid off [TS]

the hook for p90 Bruce Wayne only the [TS]

other kid to all the Salina Kyle child [TS]

  is [TS]

yes Bob I have a well-known animus [TS]

against child actors anyway haha [TS]

actually I i really i like to I like to [TS]

Selina Kyle stuff i actually thought [TS]

there was some of the the better stuff [TS]

because with her and Ben McKenzie and [TS]

and I thought that was I thought that's [TS]

that was stuff was ok I'm has a strange [TS]

idea of how to be a stealthy pickpocket [TS]

the wheel rolls over cars and stay and [TS]

somebody had deserted streets in cats [TS]

one too many times on PBS but but she [TS]

can hide in a bus that is just her in [TS]

the bus and no one will ever see her [TS]

i freakin love Lili Lili Taylor and [TS]

Frank Whaley that week that they were on [TS]

it i was going to every minute there on [TS]

the screen was great yeah i don't i [TS]

don't like the show either identity i [TS]

don't actually even like Donald low very [TS]

much we just really disappoints me [TS]

because I feel like I think what I [TS]

decided is it's so operatic it's so [TS]

over-the-top even even the Donal Logue [TS]

stuff is too far over the top and the [TS]

Jada Pinkett stuff is so far over the [TS]

top it wraps all the way back around and [TS]

and then goes back all the way up over [TS]

the top again yeah and and when you [TS]

contrast with something like the flash [TS]

and trying to do very different things [TS]

  it's like I just don't I just don't like [TS]

it I i think i think you're right Phil [TS]

that the show that is the most [TS]

interesting to me is James Gordon trying [TS]

to wrestle with what it means to how can [TS]

he keep some honor and try to bring [TS]

justice to Gotham when it's completely [TS]

messed up but that's the only like [TS]

nugget of this that I find interesting [TS]

at all and the rest of it is so [TS]

over-the-top and and crazy that I just [TS]

as a tone wise i just can't accept it [TS]

it's just yeah yeah I i just i just [TS]

spent like 45 minutes on a non-electric [TS]

shadow podcast with my says talking [TS]

about how much i really don't like this [TS]

show so go listen to that evaluates [TS]

database basically maybe it's just sort [TS]

of you know if Gotham is a font than [TS]

this is Comic Sans Batman all i'll say [TS]

let me get money let me do over let me [TS]

say a few kind words in defensive of [TS]

Gotham though not really and I call it I [TS]

call this the shark phenomenon a few [TS]

years ago on CBS there was a show called [TS]

  shark yes [TS]

oh and gentlemen do because it's hard to [TS]

love is a strong word that we delighted [TS]

and James was just so it was James Woods [TS]

was like a really sleazy attorney who [TS]

became a force for good in the DA's [TS]

office and it was not a very difficult [TS]

to follow so you could go about your [TS]

business and and like do your email [TS]

surfing the net and and and you said [TS]

earlier how you mail by yeah and look up [TS]

and shark would be doing his Sharkey [TS]

things and you go home shark you've [TS]

solved it not cancer and I don't think [TS]

every show needs to be homework I don't [TS]

want to spend every show sitting there [TS]

with my flowchart plotting out the [TS]

various threads i think that there are [TS]

some shows that need to be disposable [TS]

that you can you can look up and go [TS]

Oh Batman how are you up to today and [TS]

and got them right now is scratching [TS]

that itch when it's not being terrible [TS]

clutches about a third method on i have [TS]

an observation about the people of [TS]

Gotham which is that they all deserve to [TS]

die and don't deserve a Batman huh yeah [TS]

in three consecutive episodes they had a [TS]

super villain whose diabolical plan was [TS]

to walk up to people and say do this [TS]

  incredibly unlikely thing [TS]

oops you just killed yourself here grab [TS]

this weather balloon oh now you're [TS]

  floating away to death [TS]

yeah here hold this metal tube up to [TS]

  your eyeball [TS]

yeah you had a very good point on [TS]

twitter about that money about the about [TS]

the assassin it is very tim burton e but [TS]

with without the humor of Tim Burton you [TS]

  know it's it's it's sort of it's like a [TS]

releases to get a mousetrap i'm i'm [TS]

going to probably watch the show on hulu [TS]

the season and see how i feel about it [TS]

by the end of it [TS]

um I really like Donald Logan will watch [TS]

him in anything and so obviously you [TS]

have yes it's effective and I think [TS]

Benjamin McKenzie is doing a fine job [TS]

with his role it's a nice kitchen [TS]

Mackenzie well we're not our first they [TS]

are very for multimedia yes mr. [TS]

Mackenzie is doing an excellent job [TS]

yeah Donaldson logo doing very well it's [TS]

it's it's sort of did you work for [TS]

  itself with me [TS]

  oh yes [TS]

ya know he is basically taking his [TS]

cellphone character and kinda get a [TS]

greater twist and it's nice and I really [TS]

love what they're doing penguin I feel [TS]

like the show just lights up whenever [TS]

that guys on-screen and I can't wait to [TS]

see him become like the Lord of the [TS]

underworld or whatever so i'm i'm [TS]

basically rooting for him which is [TS]

probably not what the show wants me to [TS]

do but i am much more invested in what [TS]

the penguin is basically the flipside of [TS]

Batman at this point where he's coming [TS]

back to Gotham City and he's going to [TS]

make the city his which is what Batman [TS]

does later it's just the Penguins idea [TS]

of what he's going to do with the city [TS]

vs Batman so diametrically opposed i [TS]

can't wait to see how it works out [TS]

alright so flashes gets it gives a [TS]

thumbs-up Gotham man not it's a half [TS]

them not so yeah I would give it a [TS]

thumbs up to nitrate three-quarters i'm [TS]

not going to because i'm i'm i'm [TS]

sticking with it at the halfway point [TS]

that three-quarters understand i watch [TS]

this you know second episode just was [TS]

like I don't want to watch the show [TS]

yeah and I mean the thought that by the [TS]

end of the series if we're never gonna [TS]

see Batman by the end of the series [TS]

things are still going to be so dark [TS]

that the city needs a Batman so your [TS]

heroes Gordon is never going to win you [TS]

know it's like why do I want that in my [TS]

life one once a week for the next time I [TS]

don't I don't entirely agree with that [TS]

because i feel like the story arc of the [TS]

show is going to be cordon getting more [TS]

and more power mais you know no one hour [TS]

and was going to clean it up to the [TS]

point where he can at least side with [TS]

Batman that like but you know whether he [TS]

becomes Commissioner he's just a [TS]

higher-ranking cop that he's going to [TS]

have made things less corrupt but still [TS]

not enough that he does not develop a [TS]

stat man but I'm oohs yeah that's not [TS]

the point in my life once a week I agree [TS]

ok so we should but we should move on [TS]

what other new shows are out there that [TS]

that you guys are watching that you [TS]

would like to talk about perhaps [TS]

Constantine Constantine's and I asked [TS]

for me or the other the other night as [TS]

we record this DC times might have been [TS]

doing the superhero yeah we just [TS]

continuing the DC Comics so uh this [TS]

watch to see I haven't seen it well tell [TS]

  me about it [TS]

Monty well the topic is about iie yeah i [TS]

  know the top [TS]

but but yes you're gonna love me some [TS]

  people might not [TS]

it's an Iraqi on rives yeah well it's a [TS]

bad guy because when i started to me [TS]

it's a show about konstantine chernenko [TS]

and to ever live up to the legacy set by [TS]

urien drop-off byzantine empire John [TS]

Constantine is the latest in a long line [TS]

of musicians who musicians magicians [TS]

they're like met there like that the [TS]

Laughing magician or something like that [TS]

because they they always manage to land [TS]

on their feet and get the best of a deal [TS]

and through a series of really bad [TS]

decisions he ends up mortgaging his soul [TS]

two three or four different demonic [TS]

entities and basically but the comic [TS]

book series is about him staying one or [TS]

two steps ahead whichever demon own a [TS]

piece of the sold any given point and by [TS]

the end of it is ready to die and he [TS]

solved supernatural mysteries along the [TS]

  way [TS]

yeah yeah and the TV show appears to be [TS]

they have seemed to have set it up where [TS]

he is again a wizard but not like the [TS]

harry potter type of wizard more like a [TS]

p.i who happens to be able to cast [TS]

spells he consigned an innocent girl to [TS]

hell through his own hubris and an angel [TS]

is now using this as leverage against [TS]

him so he kind of has to fight the [TS]

forces of evil for heaven and in order [TS]

to redeem his own soul and try to get [TS]

this innocent child back from the damned [TS]

so that all supernatural mysteries along [TS]

  the way [TS]

yeah i mean that's that yeah i mean this [TS]

is obviously going to like a demon of [TS]

the week or whatever it's going to kind [TS]

of like Reaper that way this is [TS]

basically like if Reaper went to grad [TS]

school but / supernatural yeah so the [TS]

good news is that the guy looks exactly [TS]

like the constant in the comics and he's [TS]

a Christmas she like that is the correct [TS]

that was something that sold me out like [TS]

the first like 30 seconds you're like [TS]

yeah this guy is John Constantine that [TS]

they did a good job with that they may [TS]

have done like a pentagram on the [TS]

Florida and just like brought him up [TS]

from somewhere because like I had never [TS]

had not been through this actress work [TS]

before and then he walks onto the screen [TS]

and body scan fortunately nothing in [TS]

your heart she left him [TS]

it's the pilot well the pilots kind of a [TS]

hot mess because it's an island time and [TS]

I think you should get the reshot yeah [TS]

because apparently they wanted to cut [TS]

out the lady in it so they got [TS]

don't think they got rid of the [TS]

character who was supposed to be his [TS]

  female sidekick [TS]

um she returns to her home planet at the [TS]

end of the episode off-screen yes it's a [TS]

shame because she's not a bad I bad [TS]

actress I've seen her and she was in the [TS]

BBC robin hood show a couple years ago [TS]

as maid marian she's finding that but [TS]

they're making her do that fake American [TS]

accent and they put her in the sort of [TS]

aunjanue role of like I don't know [TS]

anything that's going on here and [TS]

literally I like it was paying attention [TS]

every line of dialogue do that they gave [TS]

her was like the what's what's this [TS]

about what's that about what was going [TS]

  on who are you [TS]

what's that what are these things it's [TS]

when they start screaming the best time [TS]

  gun straight go straight [TS]

it was but I got a couple levels even [TS]

though and see and see how this goes [TS]

and I thought that Chaz was well cast [TS]

and is an interesting character on [TS]

Harold Perrineau is incredibly creepy [TS]

guy like him so you you've got a couple [TS]

intriguing hooks and I think it's too up [TS]

a couple episodes on hulu and see how [TS]

you like it yeah i'll keep watching it [TS]

it might not be good but it'll be [TS]

fascinating and the thing is you don't [TS]

have to have actually read the comics to [TS]

enjoy the the series I feel like we [TS]

should we should reassure people on this [TS]

point because Constantine like John [TS]

Constantine's kind of the wolverine of [TS]

the vertical university just get popping [TS]

up everywhere and like working with [TS]

everybody and he's got this crazy-long [TS]

back started like swamp thing and with [TS]

Timothy hunter the boy wizard and with [TS]

the guys from the endless and so on and [TS]

so forth and that gets old and tedious [TS]

and tired so just ignore the comment [TS]

posted book history and see how this [TS]

  works for you [TS]

yeah the show might just be supernatural [TS]

private investigator Mike Stevens right [TS]

well I i think it does a good job of [TS]

focusing on what's interesting about [TS]

this character is that he's likeable but [TS]

he's kind of ultimately cursed in that [TS]

they make a point of this in the first [TS]

episode like basically all of his [TS]

friends die or get in trouble in one way [TS]

  or another [TS]

like you know he's kind of a walking bad [TS]

luck token for everybody else around him [TS]

which is kind of what makes him [TS]

fascinating as a characters because you [TS]

know he ends up being not impervious but [TS]

like you know he he ends up suffering [TS]

causing a lot of pain stuff like that [TS]

but that's kind of his nurses that he [TS]

realized that like he needs and craves [TS]

human companionship and then he realizes [TS]

he's like the worst thing that happens [TS]

  to most people [TS]

yeah but it'sit's really actually watch [TS]

the production values in the pilot I [TS]

  thought were really good [TS]

I thought they they pulled some [TS]

interesting strings the the right I knew [TS]

that they had changed the last scene [TS]

where they sort of write out the female [TS]

lead but it comes across as incredibly [TS]

handsome you like oh my god do terrible [TS]

fortunately you're gonna want a [TS]

journalist worth noting that ever [TS]

  happened [TS]

fortunately she left us a map of all [TS]

these things that we can turn into like [TS]

  25 more episodes [TS]

yeah well because they recast the [TS]

actress right there like not just recast [TS]

the changes Tupac similarities wholly [TS]

different character and they tacked on [TS]

this little bit in the very end that [TS]

sort of leads into that which is a nice [TS]

little segue but there's a scene at the [TS]

end Rishi's that somebody has been [TS]

drawing John Constantine at least one of [TS]

which is actually a picture from the [TS]

comics I've yeah it was a couple of my [TS]

book covers there which i like to think [TS]

they did just so they could throw some [TS]

  money [TS]

the artist's way I don't think that was [TS]

her i thought it was like some mystery [TS]

woman we're gonna find out how John [TS]

Constantine is horribly screwed her over [TS]

to it's signed by her who is the new [TS]

characters said oh ah clever [TS]

well that's one way to do it so [TS]

Constantine worth far i give it a few [TS]

episodes I think I said keep your [TS]

netflix and I it might work better if [TS]

you watch two or three in a row [TS]

  I'm i have a lot of I I have big love [TS]

with the character from my comic book [TS]

reading days and so obvious and we all [TS]

know i'm a sucker because i'm still [TS]

watching off them so i think that people [TS]

may want to try two or three and fell I [TS]

I had no idea konstantine chernenko is [TS]

so ill for so much of his rule of the [TS]

Soviet Union yeah now it's really a it's [TS]

really a sad series that it's mostly [TS]

about him good I don't feel so good the [TS]

big that is a Russian series it only [TS]

goes from one season to after the video [TS]

is intended realize my garbage off with [TS]

you ! big blob of the series of my right [TS]

  shoulder mob anyone [TS]

ok go for it great job what what what [TS]

I've been uh what other shows should we [TS]

talk about you as anybody else watched [TS]

  forever at all [TS]

yes I do yes yes i saw the pilot it's a [TS]

it's one of those shows you can watch [TS]

where literally you can you can leave [TS]

the room and come back [TS]

and not miss a beat yes but that's not a [TS]

point against it because sometimes you [TS]

really don't want to have to watch TV [TS]

where you're like oh someone somewhere [TS]

some some northwestern grad students [TS]

about the launcher PhD thesis on this um [TS]

it's a very CBS procedural which is [TS]

funny because it's on ABC ABC mind it is [TS]

  the like it [TS]

the show it has the most come with [TS]

obviously i think is Elementary where [TS]

he's a super knowledgeable guy who [TS]

solves crimes but with a different spin [TS]

because he's got this strange [TS]

supernatural curse / blessing where ya [TS]

is a morally we're and resurrected in [TS]

the water and he's got like a weird [TS]

immortal stalker 2 is like I may have [TS]

answers but i'm not going to write i'll [TS]

just keep calling you like a weird out [TS]

so what will you sit like the CBS [TS]

procedural but half the time I expect [TS]

castle to walk in turn we have a castle [TS]

is in self-esteem it's a central exactly [TS]

out and at least he gets to use his own [TS]

accent and I think you watch it mostly [TS]

for the performance is younger and has [TS]

very charming yeah here he he's easy [TS]

they they have finally found a project [TS]

for this do because they're i have [TS]

watched him bombing a lot of things that [TS]

I enjoy watching him and read her hang [TS]

out they don't yes that's the best [TS]

combination like the best part of the [TS]

show is watching them just banter with [TS]

each other it's phenomenal and the [TS]

creepy dude who used to be on bones and [TS]

is now like the under corner [TS]

I can't Joel dates after corner that is [TS]

like the weird uh for movie version of [TS]

quincy under koruna we have come to the [TS]

interesting world of Forensic Sciences [TS]

yeah he's like this actors but on Avatar [TS]

he was that he was one of the squints on [TS]

bones and now he's on this and he's got [TS]

like a really nice hangdog thing going [TS]

  and he's fun [TS]

it's a fun show to watch is it doesn't [TS]

  take itself too seriously [TS]

yeah and they do the flashbacks well [TS]

we're actually kind of the only [TS]

criticism I would level against it is [TS]

this dude was like the most progressive [TS]

colonial to ever walk the speed of the [TS]

streets of New Amsterdam because like he [TS]

was appalled by tenement conditions and [TS]

like all you fools tuberculosis and [TS]

isn't caused by night air one day we'll [TS]

find the cause and and like that [TS]

was not a social cause that he was not [TS]

firmly on the right side of history on [TS]

the show that this reminds me of [TS]

actually is highlander the series not [TS]

just got the guy gets killed in every [TS]

episode just like all the flashbacks are [TS]

just like that a Highlander where Duncan [TS]

was just the greatest guy wherever he [TS]

was it would be great if there was a [TS]

show about a guy who like travel through [TS]

time and just had a board social views i [TS]

would be an entertaining show [TS]

quantum lout know that was american [TS]

horror story that was the last season of [TS]

american horror story with it turns out [TS]

that Kathy Bates is pretty much that [TS]

  character [TS]

oh yeah and to torture her they tired of [TS]

her and make her watch like President [TS]

Obama on TV because they figure it's [TS]

like the worst thing in the world for [TS]

and they're right she loses her mind [TS]

it's really fucking it forever forever [TS]

forever seem to be one of those kind of [TS]

disposable shows i didn't just like it [TS]

at all but i felt no need to watch more [TS]

of it but I if if it were on or as Phil [TS]

said something you put on the background [TS]

and don't need to pay attention to I [TS]

thought it seemed perfectly fine the the [TS]

opposite of this show in tone is how to [TS]

get away with murder which takes itself [TS]

very seriously and I don't like any of [TS]

the characters I'm having a really hard [TS]

time trying to stick with that show um [TS]

and somebody I forget who had the [TS]

perfect tweet where they're like how to [TS]

commit murder is basically what happens [TS]

when slytherin goes to law school and I [TS]

i get that shonda rhimes does [TS]

complicated characters who are both good [TS]

and bad and have motives and and [TS]

everybody's human has flaws and feelings [TS]

but it's boring the flashbacks are kind [TS]

  of deliberately obfuscating they're [TS]

wasting viola davis and i can't connect [TS]

to the key to play Dean in the last few [TS]

of harry potter with I can't connect to [TS]

him or any of the other people and I [TS]

have like three episodes piled up and [TS]

hula right now just because i keep [TS]

trying them and I'm like yeah I cut it [TS]

loose after a couple just because i [TS]

don't want to spend any more time with [TS]

  any of these jerks [TS]

  yeah another awful cool [TS]

so but I should also tipped my hand here [TS]

and and say I've never been able to [TS]

stick out any Shonda Rhimes show after [TS]

two or three episodes anyway [TS]

police he'll be really disappointed when [TS]

she finally makes the ABC Marvel synergy [TS]

work and this is my idea that I'm just [TS]

gonna spread around until finally it [TS]

happens which is shonda rhimes she-hulk [TS]

that's what i want right Marvin take the [TS]

Marvel intellectual property is a loss [TS]

  show with she-hulk she's a lawyer she's [TS]

a superhero you put it all together [TS]

she's a person of color the color is [TS]

green but still and I I think shonda [TS]

rhimes would do a great job with that [TS]

kind of like law hero kind of things [TS]

that's what I want him she holds a shot [TS]

away an IDF and this is why you're [TS]

running Kapiolani let's get our agency [TS]

Marvel you got that one for free [TS]

maybe they can free maybe they can [TS]

repeat that that that nice lady from red [TS]

band society to and she can call man oh [TS]

you had to say it [TS]

so did anybody watch watch red gram you [TS]

know because that was that was [TS]

singularly the worst the worst thing i [TS]

saw this doesn't make me a bad person [TS]

that I'm rooting for the deaths of [TS]

multiple ya know it doesn't know because [TS]

they're in a bad show and they made [TS]

their characters they all need to just [TS]

die by the show dying which i think it [TS]

will because its ratings are turning [TS]

point I i have to that I had even worse [TS]

than ribbons some real really so wet [TS]

right very rarely i mean it's like it [TS]

right there very quickly red band [TS]

society is an unwatchable show about [TS]

people who are in a hospital and [TS]

apparently dying but they're the [TS]

  hospital's almost like a dorm I don't [TS]

really understand it doesn't make any [TS]

  sense [TS]

the characters are directly is it really [TS]

anorexic she's just really cute [TS]

yeah it's so bad it's like patch Adams [TS]

the series is what you're told ya you [TS]

know basically the angriest about oh [TS]

it's Octavia Spencer want to liberate [TS]

for better things and think of angry [TS]

about is is you've got this this [TS]

anorexic who's supposedly like a [TS]

long-term resident and she suppose and [TS]

anorexia is it is is a legitimate [TS]

  psychological and physical disorder [TS]

um terrible things happen when you have [TS]

it you lose your hair you grow all a [TS]

layer of fur all over your body your [TS]

organs start eating themselves your [TS]

immune system collapses and she looks [TS]

  great yeah sure [TS]

and it is the most harmful thing I can [TS]

  possibly think of [TS]

because the one plot line that I saw was [TS]

when she goes to like a friend some [TS]

coming and she showered with attention [TS]

  for how good [TS]

she looks and we're supposed to as [TS]

viewers think oh this is terrible but [TS]

  instead the message was [TS]

yeah she does clean up nice as a [TS]

skeletal flapper so it was just it's [TS]

it's a poison shown that way is a really [TS]

it is a really bad show and uh the the [TS]

narrator is the guy in a coma which is [TS]

kind of quirky but ends up not being [TS]

very interesting and octavia spencer [TS]

totally wasted and I hate to say it [TS]

because i read an interview with her [TS]

work she basically said well i usually [TS]

people suggest that i play the you know [TS]

the the strict strict nurse type and I [TS]

  say now that's a tight that's [TS]

typecasting i'm not going to do that but [TS]

in this case what they wrote you a [TS]

paycheck and so you took this job it is [TS]

a stereotypical performance of you know [TS]

this character that's like so lazy [TS]

  that's a bad shot but I i think it's [TS]

going to cancel very quickly so people [TS]

don't need to worry about it too much [TS]

but red band society bad [TS]

what could possibly be worse than that [TS]

David I've got an answer let David go [TS]

  first [TS]

yes yes i have instances craft I take [TS]

red band society what's next oh man had [TS]

left already canceled which already been [TS]

  canceled [TS]

i won my did ya society has set us free [TS]

to cells that's the only one that they [TS]

turned off in the middle of the first [TS]

  episode [TS]

oh my definition that's why do with red [TS]

band society about halfway through and [TS]

like life's too short for watching this [TS]

  terrible Phil yeah yeah [TS]

and so we don't even have to talk about [TS]

the handle of sips 10 you dodged you [TS]

dodged a bullet if you didn't see it [TS]

because it's gone now the the other one [TS]

that i had and i feel bad because I [TS]

really wanted it to work you know I like [TS]

the guy is a writer and comedian but yes [TS]

I'm with you you have a language is like [TS]

it's like an anti sitcom because it's [TS]

doing all of the tropes it's doing all [TS]

the things but it's almost like it's [TS]

intentionally unfunny it's really weird [TS]

when Martin Short is the most [TS]

naturalistic actor in your category is [TS]

  gone [TS]

yeah well the i watch the second episode [TS]

are i'll have another tryout man David [TS]

they have the whole thing ago [TS]

hey are you dating a doula yes I'm [TS]

dating the doula and it goes and its [TS]

trying to make the doula into a thing [TS]

right and the other plot that they've [TS]

got running along this is his air [TS]

conditioners stopped working his window [TS]

air conditioner and they have to get out [TS]

of the window and immediately my brain [TS]

goes the duel is going to help [TS]

and talk it through the window just yeah [TS]

it's a baby and 15 minutes later [TS]

guess what happened and and I just want [TS]

no this this is wrong [TS]

so Phil made reference to the fact that [TS]

I i launched recently this podcast on me [TS]

uncomfortable network with Tim Goodman [TS]

from The Hollywood Reporter to be [TS]

talking to you and he was being subtle [TS]

to he was quoted think I can you keep [TS]

the promise something from Iraq you fail [TS]

brought us yeah thank you feel it's all [TS]

your fault so good but Goodman quote on [TS]

Mulaney was there is no no idea there [TS]

was a TV talking shit there's no saving [TS]

a show this heinous and and the new york [TS]

times quoted them and mr. Mullaney this [TS]

is actually with mr. maleeni responded [TS]

and basically got all bent out of shape [TS]

because somebody said that is it shows [TS]

bad dude you should make a better show [TS]

you're sure you were not Jerry Seinfeld [TS]

and this show is is not good it is a [TS]

funny stand-up in a funny writer he [TS]

might not be a funny stand-up comic in [TS]

the middle of 87 sitcom so I i hesitate [TS]

to bring this up because i I've never [TS]

seen Elena nor the show how about to [TS]

compare it to so I'm speaking from a [TS]

position of a sort of this is very much [TS]

like your podcast but yeah we always [TS]

mention because this this this bit I [TS]

  suppose [TS]

does anyone remember the the louis ck [TS]

show that he did on HBO lucky Louie [TS]

lucky Louie sorry I think it was HBO [TS]

yeah your call no one like that all no [TS]

one liked it at all right that was the [TS]

that was the multi-camera sitcom parody [TS]

ish thing yeah so maybe that's what's [TS]

happening here where you've gotten [TS]

otherwise talented guy who just just had [TS]

a bad day at the office when he was [TS]

  conceiving this entire show [TS]

well it's weird because it's been [TS]

through several cycles I mean NBC [TS]

developed it and turned it down and [TS]

they've they've kept almost the same [TS]

cast and crew together and they did it [TS]

again for Fox and I don't know it's it's [TS]

really when trying to make fetch happen [TS]

yeah yeah yeah yeah it's it's it's good [TS]

training if he happens organically and [TS]

and does his millennial thing that works [TS]

the rest of America that's fantastic but [TS]

whatever he's doing now is is the exact [TS]

opposite of it's working so well i'm [TS]

gonna compare it to a much better show [TS]

okay in the pilot episode of The Cosby [TS]

  Show [TS]

there's a spot where Bill Cosby does [TS]

about five minutes directly from his act [TS]

  about giving birth [TS]

yeah and it fits perfectly because the [TS]

characters observation it's hilarious in [TS]

the pilot episode of Mulaney there's a [TS]

big section where John Mulaney does the [TS]

section directly from his act and the [TS]

entire show shuts down while you seen [TS]

  her [TS]

watching to a section from his act yeah [TS]

it's almost the opposite i like that [TS]

everyone is sitting facing the audience [TS]

there's no it's not natural looking at [TS]

what I mean that's why part of me was [TS]

  thinking this is intentionally [TS]

  ironically bad [TS]

all right we're gonna move we're going [TS]

to move on from badness although a [TS]

definite Mulaney maybe badness of Monte [TS]

do you have something else that's too [TS]

that's that's also bad that you want to [TS]

mention well I can assure you that [TS]

project runway threads is not very good [TS]

ok thank you but this project runway for [TS]

kids alright they're doing that they're [TS]

getting the MasterChef kids thing but to [TS]

less effective such a thing were [TS]

possible yeah it's that sounds awful [TS]

it's a series of one episode things sort [TS]

of like Cupcake Wars where you have [TS]

three kids instead of ending a group of [TS]

kids over the state worries about kids [TS]

yeah good they're called cupcakes as [TS]

  they're adorable [TS]

oh and the host is Christian Siriano [TS]

stripped of all is interesting [TS]

catchphrases and clothing he's naked [TS]

  doing the show [TS]

no he's gotta like our grow-ops asses [TS]

home Edward events honey boo boo and [TS]

  this is going on [TS]

Wow anyway i'm watching it cuz i'm [TS]

writing about it okay not a good show [TS]

well as long as it's like you're just [TS]

doing it for money yeah it's the wrong [TS]

with a body allah none of us will just [TS]

want to make mention a show that was so [TS]

dumb that I couldn't watch the second [TS]

episode of it and that was scorpion oh [TS]

god the ten-year-old is hooked on it so [TS]

i was in every episode and I have a [TS]

slight now I'm sitting there watching [TS]

your message hit everyone starts with [TS]

the little prolong that introduces all [TS]

the characters by name and shows you [TS]

their name on the screen and tells you [TS]

  they are [TS]

  I can't [TS]

after five episodes name any of these [TS]

people there's there's Walter because [TS]

everyone calls him Walter there's agent [TS]

  Doggett [TS]

yes psychiatrist with a hat [TS]

you mean the Terminator to this would be [TS]

well-trained just put a hat right Eliza [TS]

that environment that guy and a great [TS]

  team ash [TS]

yeah that's right smash smash now David [TS]

when you have yes he was what i did with [TS]

many years ago i was i was commuting [TS]

between LA and San Francisco and when I [TS]

stayed in San Francisco and stay with my [TS]

parents and my parents loved the TV show [TS]

drag and so every night was spent [TS]

watching various episodes of jag I have [TS]

no idea what the characters names are in [TS]

Jack because i gave them all my own [TS]

yes there will ya is jag yes there is [TS]

jag and Lady Jags and jen you called her [TS]

mrs. de jag and Jack's boss and jags [TS]

friend and those were all the characters [TS]

  in jag [TS]

oh and my father-in-law would get so [TS]

angry about this like you would prefer [TS]

his teeth their names are harder man [TS]

yeah and everyone is jealous that always [TS]

obvious its scorpion and scratch jr. [TS]

yeah that's all happy and tonight's [TS]

episode and they they've it's not even a [TS]

related company but they had a crossover [TS]

with NCIS LA tonight and so Linda hunt [TS]

shows up on that early huh that's Dan [TS]

and and not only that it was one of [TS]

these fake jeopardy things of all your [TS]

we might have to break up the team and [TS]

we're going to put your all into psych [TS]

testing and you know but but it has [TS]

linda hunt on the show and in the hold [TS]

every time she's in there [TS]

I'm thinking wow you know NCS la is such [TS]

a better show and I don't like NCIS [TS]

yeah it's at least competent it knows [TS]

what it's doing yes yes it does what it [TS]

says on the box some more important [TS]

takeaway here is that it's part of the [TS]

  jack universe yes [TS]

scorpion scorpion I for those who don't [TS]

know scorpion is about a team of super [TS]

smart ian's house its team of detectives [TS]

  a great team [TS]

yes it would be much easier to as much [TS]

better fit about their either somebody [TS]

there's her t-there's out to go [TS]

is a team and services and a half of [TS]

  super smart super-smart professionals [TS]

who are managed by a scorpion [TS]

ah the only babies like Charlie and [TS]

charlie's angels and it turns out you [TS]

just here being the king / yes mr. [TS]

scorpion likes it is so a this is this [TS]

is a show made by people who think [TS]

computers are magical devices controlled [TS]

  by elves [TS]

speaking of that can I just mention the [TS]

show that is not out yet but it's going [TS]

to be the worst show ever and i will [TS]

  watch everything so hot [TS]

yes do you have you CSI cyber [TS]

yes here are some details from the cast [TS]

list you've got Patricia Arquette as [TS]

avery Ryan cyber psychologist you know [TS]

she should wear a hat generation like [TS]

baby as Elijah mundo you've got shad [TS]

moss who you may know as little bow as [TS]

cyber hacker and a shape that's not his [TS]

actual name is codenamed no no his [TS]

character name is Brody Nelson his role [TS]

is cyber cyber hacker yeah and KW [TS]

Enderby court enough you've also got [TS]

Luke Perry oh my god have 2y is going to [TS]

be that it's you know is it when this [TS]

day be odd genuine ever CBS case [TS]

something went one right as soon as [TS]

scorpion is cancelled i think when I [TS]

didn't just gotta Pharisees order Raven [TS]

are here is and Stavros stifter that was [TS]

Peter metros sifter Stavros Peter make [TS]

Michael look at every shipping magnate [TS]

abs app is out of control now this is [TS]

going to be so great [TS]

just imagine the people pounding on [TS]

keyboard frantically i would i would [TS]

like I would like to anyway scorpions [TS]

the episode where they were they have to [TS]

drive fast under a plane and plug the [TS]

ethernet cable in order to save the [TS]

plane because reasons it is amazing and [TS]

I can't watch it because it's just it [TS]

f yeah it kills too many brain cells [TS]

speaking of NCIS is to NCIS New Orleans [TS]

competent show Scott Bakula gets to [TS]

smile so I'm happy about that better [TS]

  project [TS]

yeah yeah but I maintain that it would [TS]

be a much more entertaining show if it [TS]

were scott bakula and a cartoon [TS]

alligator who walked on two feet and [TS]

spoke with like a crazy Cajun voice and [TS]

always hungry but they're solving crimes [TS]

it is an alligator only [TS]

scott bakula can see no not to tell you [TS]

  later it [TS]

no it's a talking alligator ok so what [TS]

we hoped my advice would be yeah and [TS]

  Emeril is there lieutenant [TS]

yeah you know let's get sky anne rice's [TS]

they have a supernatural problem me the [TS]

alligator is at R'lyeh Fontaine you know [TS]

but they just solve crimes they've [TS]

probably convertible would be awesome [TS]

drew brees drops in every now and again [TS]

to give them like tips [TS]

yeah i mean frankly just NCIS treme I'd [TS]

watch that sir david simon on the line [TS]

i'm sure he'd love to be part of it all [TS]

is franchise yes David site when I think [TS]

and I think CBS procedural i think david [TS]

simon that would be kind of brilliant [TS]

woman that would be what a combination [TS]

leslie moonves says hey David Simon I i [TS]

think we should be in the David Simon [TS]

business and David side has ok David [TS]

Simon visit steady paycheck with it [TS]

turns out heater signed away the DVD [TS]

  rights to the wire [TS]

so Dave it so CSI the wire i wanted to [TS]

mention i want to mention a show that I [TS]

i really enjoyed which is Jane the [TS]

Virgin also on the CW I can't wait is [TS]

that time so you know ugly betty was a [TS]

was a telenovela turned into an American [TS]

show with it was very broad and and and [TS]

soapy and telenovela and what I love [TS]

about jane the virgin is that it is [TS]

unabashedly from a telenovela and [TS]

actually telenovelas figure in the [TS]

background plot of the show and yet it [TS]

keeps an emotional realism that you [TS]

probably couldn't do if you were [TS]

spending all the time everything [TS]

heightened and over-the-top and Jane at [TS]

the center of the kid that the character [TS]

is a really interesting grounded person [TS]

and even though her scenario and the [TS]

idea is that she's she's saving herself [TS]

for marriage and then in a series of [TS]

unfortunate events she is accidentally [TS]

inseminated so she becomes pregnant at [TS]

the actors office at the doctor's office [TS]

and the dog in terms of the doctors the [TS]

sister of the the father of the baby and [TS]

the their day there is the telenovela [TS]

effective everybody being connected to [TS]

everybody else in some way but to keep [TS]

that kind of pot boiling plot advancing [TS]

  while [TS]

also keeping some really genuine moments [TS]

of character and emotion is quite a [TS]

magic trick and they've managed to do it [TS]

where like the characters likable they [TS]

all have motivations characters that [TS]

could be cardboard cutout villains [TS]

suddenly are you understand why they're [TS]

doing what they're doing and even if you [TS]

don't agree with it that you like you [TS]

you like the the father of the baby his [TS]

wife is so easily could have been a [TS]

caricature and a villain and yet you [TS]

actually kind of feel for her after two [TS]

episodes so i'm really liking and I [TS]

think it I think it's very good and if [TS]

you're not if you're not watching it [TS]

because you think well one it's on the [TS]

CW two it's not about superheroes and [TS]

three it's probably it basically telling [TS]

fellow so it's probably ridiculous it's [TS]

not it's it's really good it's charming [TS]

and that's not it is that's not a word I [TS]

use much for TV i used a lot for me but [TS]

you use is very way so it is and in and [TS]

you're casting goes a long way it's [TS]

funny as that is fantastic [TS]

she because she's living in this in the [TS]

telenovelas a part of her life living [TS]

with her mom and her abuela she's on the [TS]

bus and like the guy in the billboard [TS]

for the telenovela like talks to her and [TS]

links that are in things and he's the [TS]

narrator and it's it's just the way it's [TS]

done it could it could so easily have [TS]

been done wrong and instead it's like [TS]

every decision is the right decision and [TS]

you end up with this show that is able [TS]

to walk that line of like honoring the [TS]

these kind of crazy plots and broad [TS]

ideas of the telenovela while being [TS]

  grounded [TS]

I don't know how they do it it's amazing [TS]

yeah yeah so i recommend it james [TS]

  version [TS]

you should check it out David said David [TS]

said it was great it was a it was good [TS]

in words that I overused so there you go [TS]

David good job I think blackish a [TS]

half-decent show I was the other one I [TS]

was going to mention any other than i [TS]

wanted to i get some yes I laughed I [TS]

watched watched the first two or three [TS]

episodes that know that I think the [TS]

second episode I laughed so hard that I [TS]

cried twice in one episode and that is I [TS]

don't do that to comedies and and I've [TS]

been really impressed with blackish yeah [TS]

you weren't like really great i'm not [TS]

  just look some parts [TS]

anytime you agree with pops as a [TS]

character in that show you may be [TS]

thinking you're confident you are on the [TS]

wrong side of history but it's so he's [TS]

so good looks like the last episode is [TS]

about spanking into spanked or not to [TS]

spank and Anthony Anderson's character [TS]

decides he's not going to a nice and and [TS]

so everyone is watching the door to the [TS]

room and and also the the kids start [TS]

crying and bawling his eyes out the door [TS]

opens it comes out and and Mary fish [TS]

birds what did you do is why i like to [TS]

spank might I told him you know I talked [TS]

with him to add said I disappointed him [TS]

and very good-looking kids up picket [TS]

fences and told I didn't tell you to [TS]

break his spirit is very small and all [TS]

my garbage i love it it's got all the I [TS]

feel like it's got it in the same vein [TS]

as modern family and that he had no [TS]

interest areas heard with it is a good [TS]

idea but yes it shows you can do a show [TS]

that's actually got a premise and it's [TS]

about something while at while never [TS]

really compromising on making good jokes [TS]

because it is about anthony anderson who [TS]

is also really likable fun character a [TS]

good just I really like the character [TS]

even though he's often wrong which is [TS]

actually one of the things I really like [TS]

about reminds me a little bit of bernie [TS]

mac and that show which also had some of [TS]

the same people working on very well [TS]

more Larry Wilmore who's going to be [TS]

Stephen Colbert's replacement is on is [TS]

on this on the show as a writer and he's [TS]

really funny and he basically [TS]

masterminded Bernie Mac so yeah that [TS]

they brought him in to sort of ease the [TS]

  way because it's a first-time show [TS]

creator right and and he basically said [TS]

I don't need to do anything here this is [TS]

this is solid and that's why after like [TS]

three episodes he was off to in the the [TS]

minority room in order to restore yeah [TS]

yeah my only problem with the shows they [TS]

got a couple kids too many but there are [TS]

there I forget how many kids there are [TS]

many many in the end too many is always [TS]

the answer on any don't ya okay I'm not [TS]

a crackpot it but they are really good [TS]

there they are good and and I feel like [TS]

like with modern family you you're sort [TS]

of getting the idea of where the kids [TS]

slot and what their story arcs are going [TS]

to be and how they how they fit together [TS]

and over time I think it's gonna make [TS]

more sense like it because the modern [TS]

family I I appreciate that the kids are [TS]

all different and it just took a little [TS]

time for me to to keep track of them all [TS]

  but it's it's a it's a really really [TS]

good funny funny show and a point where [TS]

modern family is as she is showing its [TS]

age blackish seems really really fresh [TS]

and there are lots of different ways to [TS]

just have the idea that this is a [TS]

ultimately it's not even about the the [TS]

  father [TS]

  father [TS]

in concerned about the racial identity [TS]

of his kids it's sort of like again it's [TS]

the father is really being concerned [TS]

about what what his kids are doing and [TS]

he his ideas are not entirely based in [TS]

reality and that leads to comedy which [TS]

is actually a lot of fun and yet his [TS]

hearts in the right place it's a it's a [TS]

really good show and if you've ever [TS]

liked like modern family or something [TS]

like that it's a it's worth your time I [TS]

I found it really really funny [TS]

so yeah what else what else we have [TS]

did anybody else see what anybody else [TS]

watch any of a doozy [TS]

yeah some guy I haven't been queued up [TS]

um it's actually pretty good i would say [TS]

I I don't know will last but it you [TS]

wanted to show what benefit is if it [TS]

kinda reminds me of benin Kate in the [TS]

sense that you have a really easy and [TS]

simple cast chemistry and they are [TS]

better than the materials are given Tom [TS]

and they're pushing too hard on some [TS]

points and they really it and the [TS]

sidekicks keep running with the show [TS]

because just like Lucy punch basically [TS]

walked off with a lot of episodes of [TS]

benin Kate the two actors whose names i [TS]

have not bothered to learn yet who are [TS]

the besties of the two cutie booty [TS]

lovebirds are our super funny in any [TS]

subplot there and they are funny I [TS]

although i would argue that some of the [TS]

later episodes they take their stick [TS]

gets a little less sticky as it goes [TS]

along and I think you have a positive [TS]

either growing as characters which i [TS]

find interesting and gratifying because [TS]

the episode where they decided that all [TS]

right fine we hate each other but [TS]

because our friends are together we will [TS]

pretend to like each other around our [TS]

friends like that was that that showed [TS]

growth and I was like hey um the two [TS]

  elements up [TS]

I'm wildly and decided on i'm not sure [TS]

how I feel about the crazy CEO of the [TS]

dating company because I feel like [TS]

you're playing Harlem too broadly and [TS]

i'm not sure how I feel about the weird [TS]

dating IT people who pop-up and and [TS]

deadpan things and then pop off again [TS]

I'll look as for cracking heads [TS]

um I feel like that's kind of geek [TS]

blackface and I don't like it [TS]

yeah after after watching the pilot the [TS]

twelve-year-old looked at and when [TS]

oh it's photo i met your mother fair [TS]

enough but it's not bad obama come from [TS]

I mean why has a long story was also [TS]

this premise morale is something that I [TS]

  find it and [TS]

totally disoriented the katey sagal is [TS]

narrating it too so yeah [TS]

katey sagal narrator I find incredibly [TS]

disorienting because i had watch her be [TS]

evil one night a week on sons of anarchy [TS]

so I like to imagine you the same yeah [TS]

getting she goes on the run from the MC [TS]

and starts narrating so it counts for [TS]

ibc i'm a fan of both the leads who i [TS]

think are very charismatic and have [TS]

really good chemistry I'm he was [TS]

Christian madman yeah a christian vande [TS]

velde manacles Milioti more intently [TS]

really welcome and the mother [TS]

yeah yeah gender they they're both very [TS]

they're both very good very good [TS]

  together and I i agree i mean there's [TS]

some elements of them quite so yes I [TS]

kinda like the the vignette approach [TS]

that they're taking even though because [TS]

it's the kind of thing that you know ten [TS]

years ago a network never would have [TS]

done was like well there's kind of a [TS]

hard limit to how long the show can go [TS]

on and yes you can find ways around that [TS]

but in some ways it's like if this was [TS]

one show that lasted 26 episodes and [TS]

they followed their conceit all the way [TS]

through i like that would be that would [TS]

  be fine [TS]

there's no need to string it out until [TS]

like 10 seasons of a show but and i and [TS]

i liked it i appreciate that they're [TS]

willing willing to take willing to go a [TS]

little bit bizarre and nerdy at times [TS]

like there's a back to the future [TS]

reference in the first episode [TS]

yeah hover more actually kind of [TS]

  hilarious I'm and that's why i like i [TS]

like the Stinger with the hoverboard [TS]

that was quite a night in that whole [TS]

subplot were like he has to go find out [TS]

the hoverboards don't really exist from [TS]

where Thompson is like it's clever its a [TS]

little bit out of the box and it's not [TS]

just your same Pat like rom-com and you [TS]

know i think it its I feel like a hell I [TS]

had a leg up on a lot of your [TS]

traditional romantic comedy sitcoms 11 [TS]

  things [TS]

speaking of stringing it out one thing [TS]

i'll give it over how i met your mother [TS]

is we know he's going to end up with the [TS]

right woman this time let's she dies in [TS]

the final ah who burns and that scab [TS]

just heal please try hehe i'm gonna [TS]

watch out for the season and i have the [TS]

marry me show queued up with Ken Marino [TS]

and casey wilson and they haven't [TS]

got around to that one yet i'm kind of [TS]

curious to see how that goes I'm [TS]

  enjoying that [TS]

oh good I'm glad to get I was worried [TS]

that it might be a little bit too much [TS]

of casey wilson doing the the spastic [TS]

physical comedy I'm a hot mess but [TS]

adorable anyway thing that kind of [TS]

happens in the pilot but she settles [TS]

down and said okay I'm good house Ken [TS]

  Marino is great [TS]

what do you mean okay because I'm oh [TS]

come on i love the state as much as the [TS]

next person I'm just how is he like to [TS]

see this easy going to your z charming [TS]

exactly easy bolt-on busy neither he's [TS]

kind of bullshit man behaving badly Ken [TS]

Marino or is it a better Ken Marino it's [TS]

a better camera no than that it's I mean [TS]

he's been acting with a lot of ladies [TS]

lately in like hotwives of orlando and [TS]

oh god that was set other show that [TS]

series we have a shot that one burning [TS]

  love [TS]

see what I remember most from Reaper [TS]

working and Michael in black were both [TS]

demons and life partners he does a very [TS]

good job when Casey Wilson freaks out [TS]

Casey Wilson style of convincing you [TS]

that he would forgive her [TS]

okay right so we got those on the list [TS]

I anything else any other new shows that [TS]

  it's a show i haven't watched that I'm [TS]

fascinated by bad judge open judge [TS]

haven't watched it not going to watch it [TS]

but this is that still oh yeah it feels [TS]

like place in my heart that house left [TS]

because I've never seen an episode of [TS]

house but i love the house promos and [TS]

now I like doing bad judge promos where [TS]

this week on that Judge bad judges badge [TS]

  uh objection excessive sexiness [TS]

objections stayed bad judge Thursday [TS]

condition to sustain for more than four [TS]

hours apparently a group of of lawyers [TS]

has has demanded that bad judge beach [TS]

  oh yeah [TS]

is bad judges a bad knee bad judge huh [TS]

did but possibly have the up the [TS]

promotional photo of it with with Kate [TS]

Walsh and she had puppet legs and yes [TS]

that's what the hell is the wrong with [TS]

kate walsh's legs my goodness so bad [TS]

judge i read please America keep [TS]

watching bad judge so i can do back [TS]

judge jokes without ever having watched [TS]

the show that's a good good good tip to [TS]

  get the other one [TS]

yes another one that I'm i'm watching is [TS]

as a hostage stockholm syndrome thing [TS]

the ten-year-old is also hooked on the [TS]

mysteries of Laura oh no change [TS]

yes which appears in the homes [TS]

christened cop mom mom cop and she's [TS]

amazing in this i will finally come to [TS]

mama and can yeah she's a cop she's a [TS]

  mom stop mom stop [TS]

I was receiving hit show all critics [TS]

hate that show and yet people should be [TS]

watching it because people like Debra [TS]

  Messing [TS]

I guess I I knew that you can I do it [TS]

was a while you actually does i don't i [TS]

don't think that's true tips of the [TS]

biggest mystery of laura is why anyone [TS]

watched every episode of smashed I don't [TS]

recall liking no no I was very [TS]

perceptive smash to I i finally said you [TS]

know why are you watching this thing [TS]

oh my god i mean okay it's got mysteries [TS]

  ok you know fine [TS]

well Laura but it's going to your hand [TS]

and you know it's like is that you like [TS]

well she s yes I like her and and she's [TS]

  a horrible mom [TS]

oh well okay she is in the show but fine [TS]

that's why are you watching this again [TS]

we don't feel better about my own [TS]

  heritage [TS]

  yeah yeah it's it's weird it's it's kind [TS]

of amazing just how awful the character [TS]

is to everybody else in the show and [TS]

they all just go up that's Laura [TS]

brilliant detective and what if you can [TS]

figure is going to kill her first [TS]

yeah now see I'd watch that show I i [TS]

wanted to mention the this section of [TS]

the podcast is Doctor Who actors doing [TS]

  fake American accent section [TS]

send another selfie with karen gillan [TS]

and which is always that loose part way [TS]

  through the first episode [TS]

oh it's such a terrible terrible well my [TS]

my understanding a little but I said [TS]

well that nice doctor who girl so not [TS]

good in the hood in the selfie that [TS]

always show someday you'll find one [TS]

here's here's one here's the thing you [TS]

know if Karen Gillan John show they're [TS]

likable actors and so why the second is [TS]

dead i don't know the guy [TS]

my understanding is that is that the [TS]

pilot is worse than the regular episodes [TS]

of the pilot is like literally we dare [TS]

you to watch the show because you're [TS]

going to hate everybody who's loved it [TS]

and it seems a little misguided for [TS]

additional pylons yeah it's like [TS]

somebody said what if we stripped out [TS]

all of the sharp and funny and humane [TS]

insights that my fair lady had you know [TS]

and then what we're left is the story of [TS]

a man bullying a woman until she turns [TS]

into what he wants and someone else had [TS]

  green light that sucker [TS]

  it's it's it's big is a breathtaking [TS]

tour de force of misogyny in under half [TS]

an hour it is it is the first 1i watched [TS]

it through the first thing I thought was [TS]

wow they they really are doing their [TS]

part to because this woman that the [TS]

  protagonist is issues basically [TS]

internalised every message she's ever [TS]

gotten via advertising you have to look [TS]

this way you have to act this way people [TS]

will only like you if you have if you [TS]

quite if you do this female performance [TS]

where you're sexually available and [TS]

attractive and not a deep thinker and [TS]

your feet you're not touch with your [TS]

feelings and superficial and so she [TS]

internalizes these messages she acts on [TS]

them and she's held up and it reviled as [TS]

an object of duration from everybody who [TS]

meets her it's it's it is literally the [TS]

illustration of women can't win for [TS]

  losing [TS]

and then the rest of the episodes people [TS]

busy telling her what's wrong with [TS]

herself and how she deserves not to have [TS]

human contact or meaningful connections [TS]

with anybody and in order to be part of [TS]

  the human race [TS]

she has to radically reconfigure [TS]

everything about herself it's if it's [TS]

  infuriating [TS]

yeah I've like my head is I'm busy find [TS]

the pieces of my head that are over the [TS]

porch because the more I think about [TS]

this show that the more vile I think the [TS]

  premise is because again [TS]

like in the original my fair lady part [TS]

of the point was that Henry Henry [TS]

Higgins was a just as blinded by his own [TS]

inability to perceive people who were [TS]

not came as human beings and a joke was [TS]

he's also these inferior people pull [TS]

them up from the market whereas he [TS]

couldn't see that that his lack of [TS]

humanity was much much worse and Eliza [TS]

had her own inherent dignity because she [TS]

was somebody with a rich inner life and [TS]

aspirations and goals and her [TS]

willingness to work with Henry Higgins [TS]

was her what was a really shrewd move [TS]

and a little bit of an emotional [TS]

evolution none of that is in this and [TS]

what's amazing to me is this is from the [TS]

  creators Suburgatory which they [TS]

cancelled and gave her this instead and [TS]

that was a show about maintaining your [TS]

individuality and maintaining you know [TS]

being who you were in the midst of [TS]

everybody else conforming and this is [TS]

almost the opposite thing and different [TS]

things about Suburgatory it was really [TS]

nuanced about how it treated women's [TS]

expectations though because in the last [TS]

few in the last one of the episodes it [TS]

shows how Dallas was really effectively [TS]

hemmed in and and scented as a person [TS]

because she had always tried to do an [TS]

exterior performance of femininity and [TS]

it had her as a person so she had to [TS]

basically stripped out who she wasn't [TS]

start over again and they did a great [TS]

job of pointing that out and they did a [TS]

great job of pointing out that dolly I [TS]

could put on a performance as a hyper [TS]

consump as a hyper consumer and sexually [TS]

accessible person but she also had deep [TS]

reserves of competence and she knew [TS]

herself inside and out and she had a [TS]

full of interesting emotional life and [TS]

one of the things I liked about [TS]

Suburgatory is that test it comes to [TS]

this place with all these prejudices [TS]

intact and she learns over and over [TS]

again that there are different and [TS]

equally viable ways to be a [TS]

fully-realized person and this show is [TS]

basically the exact opposite about [TS]

counterpoint superga Tory also had a lot [TS]

of that show gave into a lot of bad [TS]

  instincts [TS]

yes yes it and it sounds like from what [TS]

you're telling me about a lot of those [TS]

bad instincts are on display in in [TS]

selfie yeah I also in this category at [TS]

the other the other show with the other [TS]

answer would have accepted his grace [TS]

point which is a shot-for-shot remake of [TS]

a perfectly good show called broadchurch [TS]

featuring david tennant in the same part [TS]

except with a fake American accent there [TS]

  and [TS]

reason to watch GracePoint ever there is [TS]

and it's because northern very northern [TS]

california is gorgeous and i want to [TS]

live there permanently and until i can i [TS]

will just drink in the scenery and all [TS]

you have to deal with his child murder [TS]

to look at the pretty pictures yeah well [TS]

I already got like it [TS]

the making child actors and I don't want [TS]

the point is they already made this [TS]

exact show and that show was better and [TS]

unless you don't understand English [TS]

accents you should probably just watch [TS]

broadchurch because it's the same show [TS]

they you know I can see all right let's [TS]

make something inspired by it and you [TS]

know and they say oh and the story is [TS]

changing its gonna be able to deliver [TS]

his first is that social identical yeah [TS]

seven it does happen so just seven [TS]

yeah I'm not gonna last that long new [TS]

god yes every tenant 7 a 7 out of 7 the [TS]

first last two episodes i guess was [TS]

slightly diverge so that the the [TS]

solution is different to them or but you [TS]

just watch broadchurch it's good [TS]

david tennant does his actual proper [TS]

Scottish accent it's got Olivia Colman [TS]

  and it [TS]

oh god I read about this show it sounds [TS]

so awful it is totally great but it is [TS]

  spectacularly depression depressing but [TS]

really great and you know although it [TS]

was great tattoo point so you know [TS]

because it's the same show also uh uh [TS]

who else is in that that's that's so [TS]

  great [TS]

Arthur Darvill isn't david bradley [TS]

though is a heartbreakingly great as you [TS]

may know him as films from Harry Potter [TS]

he is fantastic and projects for sad [TS]

so those are my those are my doctor who [TS]

actors doing inexplicable American any [TS]

other new shows we should cover before [TS]

we wrap this up because I feel like [TS]

we're we we are rapidly running out of [TS]

time we have so many shows that we've [TS]

been talking about its amazing well you [TS]

know i'm looking at the list we've had [TS]

  almost all of them [TS]

the only thing was probably not hit yet [TS]

we have not hit stalker and don't know [TS]

wow that that you can't I can't even [TS]

watch that based on the ads because the [TS]

address is wrong with Leslie Anderson [TS]

these days how do you go from dawson's [TS]

creek to this and also that just got a [TS]

full season renewal of course the dead [TS]

Madam Secretary know that's why you need [TS]

  that that's not a real show that's a [TS]

simpsons episode what are you talking [TS]

  about [TS]

that cabinet secretary ready anderson [TS]

and and the only other thing is [TS]

  christella haven't seen yet [TS]

oh yeah I want to require to see if you [TS]

those hurt okay i was just one of those [TS]

yeah it's it people who have to watch TV [TS]

for a living considers its it's [TS]

watchable so let's try it and then the [TS]

only other thing i can think of that's [TS]

coming soon is marvel's agent carter so [TS]

whatever your lassie I am excited about [TS]

that that's going to be super spicy that [TS]

I'm actually surprised at how well [TS]

Marvel the the agents of shield has [TS]

managed to turn itself around because it [TS]

was kind of in the weeds for a while [TS]

last year and aside from the [TS]

inexplicable continuation of skyping on [TS]

my screen it's been really good yeah I i [TS]

agree been pretty straight like I mean [TS]

since the whole winter soldier tie and I [TS]

feel like yes done it's maintained a [TS]

pretty steady pace and if I know you [TS]

can't she looks like the best thing i [TS]

really like that show they took the [TS]

leash off like that was it's very clear [TS]

now looking back like all right you know [TS]

you guys can run this show but you can't [TS]

really do anything important for about [TS]

the first half of the first season so [TS]

  it's really boring [TS]

okay and no interesting characters and [TS]

now yeah i just i just watched the was [TS]

the last week where we're uh Tyra from [TS]

Friday Night Lights is Mockingbird and [TS]

I'm like oh my god [TS]

wherewhere why was this not on last year [TS]

this is so great and they've expanded [TS]

the ensemble and there are like the [TS]

other characters are much more [TS]

interesting than the other people caring [TS]

dude great job with the well i mean i [TS]

think they've done a great job of of [TS]

modifying you know the characters from [TS]

the first season I mean I think that [TS]

fits it fits his ark in this season has [TS]

been really i thought he had seen with [TS]

Warren was like one of the best yeah [TS]

senior season it's just I mean it's [TS]

definitely I it's hard to it's really [TS]

hard to figure out what is it is the one [TS]

of you one of the few shows I've ever [TS]

watch sports like a light switch was [TS]

flipped on its way from being terrible [TS]

to being great really quick and i am [TS]

delighted by kyle maclachlan oh yeah oh [TS]

well yeah anything really but yes yes [TS]

was great mean I don't want you to come [TS]

in and be friendly but super creepy [TS]

oh you're doing it all right but this is [TS]

my lover that's what I do like bread [TS]

yeah following that and I kept waiting [TS]

for music died and it's been about 10 [TS]

days since i've been waiting your voice [TS]

your daughter at pori diamond has a [TS]

light have absolutely enjoying this is [TS]

read by medieval not see coming diamond [TS]

is the immortal Nazis just do ya like [TS]

every time he looks good like this is [TS]

  the rule your planet [TS]

come on edge I will always think of him [TS]

as as Terry from the from the shield but [TS]

other than that like the ten minutes you [TS]

don't know just what I still think I'm [TS]

is detective Kellermann a scalar many's [TS]

the cop on the edge for always beside ya [TS]

always be he was so so babyface and then [TS]

open did bad things you did I will say [TS]

that agents of shield does not know what [TS]

an obelisk is yeah it's just hard thing [TS]

anything you want but it's not an [TS]

obelisk yeah you're right now and again [TS]

my only problem is i find Skye to be the [TS]

least interesting about yeah and I hate [TS]

that they're like oh well clearly she's [TS]

the reason everybody gets up in the [TS]

morning and I'm just done with it all [TS]

they've done is good with that character [TS]

is they've made her useful and not [TS]

useless and so she seems she seems [TS]

capable and functional and and although [TS]

I don't really like her she's using [TS]

she's useful now we're before issue i [TS]

like I didn't like her and she was [TS]

  useless [TS]

looks like why are you on the screen go [TS]

away the process of making your useful [TS]

has involved throwing out everything we [TS]

  already knew about her [TS]

yes well I longer a hacker which used to [TS]

be all she did I endorse this plan [TS]

because she was not interesting i start [TS]

by getting rid of her then i get rid of [TS]

Ward yeah then we got a lot of the evil [TS]

ward come on Eve award is great but he's [TS]

not evil ward anymore now he's just [TS]

apologetic Ward all I come on and like [TS]

like he's not going to get out halfway [TS]

  through the season [TS]

yeah and that is that is just like it's [TS]

like check out just like Chekhov's ward [TS]

guys and he's not going to get out and [TS]

be evil this is the only way to redeem [TS]

unless they're killing off that [TS]

character in that actor what they're [TS]

going to do because that's what they do [TS]

on ABC once they think you're guilty and [TS]

  actually actually it's a little-known [TS]

tell us anything it's been a disney [TS]

policy for a long time anyway before [TS]

  they don't forget [TS]

karen gillan he's going to escape and [TS]

then he's gonna do something that proves [TS]

that he's actually telling the truth and [TS]

then everybody's gonna be like well I [TS]

guess we can trust work after all and [TS]

then everything's going to be okay again [TS]

that tell of my worries literally a Nazi [TS]

who killed a bunch of people on their [TS]

  team last season [TS]

yeah I'm pretty sad that built that bill [TS]

paxton is not around though because he [TS]

was like a real shot in the arm for that [TS]

show last year he was every minute he [TS]

was on i was planning an accident his [TS]

accent was pretty fantastic though and I [TS]

loved his ending that was such a [TS]

perfectly clear in treating this like a [TS]

look at what the last last fall we did [TS]

this episode we talked about how boring [TS]

and uninteresting agents of shield was [TS]

and it's interesting that we get get [TS]

here this year of like they turned [TS]

around in a way that is surprising [TS]

because it really was not good and you [TS]

haven't watched agents of shield i would [TS]

say watch the first couple and then [TS]

figure out which episode happened right [TS]

after I would start with about nine or [TS]

ten am feeling so 10-11 usually one of [TS]

us and ask us questions yes do that [TS]

everyone happened after Captain America [TS]

is right word I i will say this which is [TS]

that the shows that I look forward to [TS]

the most every week now are the [TS]

comic-book ship yeah I mean between the [TS]

flash arrow agents of shield and you [TS]

know i'm interested in Constantine as [TS]

well I feel like the strangely strong [TS]

performing shows out there from the [TS]

comic book chandra well if you're gonna [TS]

be like that walking dead also counsels [TS]

a comic book show ideal driving that and [TS]

and Brooklyn nine-nine and Andy Samberg [TS]

is basically a cartoon so I i was i [TS]

watched very soon links know i love [TS]

Terry Crews and Terry Crews the [TS]

halloween 2episode oh my god that wasn't [TS]

so that was the really thing about that [TS]

was watching that and realize the guy [TS]

that they bring into play a pickpocket [TS]

is hollow Robbins who is an odious [TS]

likewise all speak like a month ago and [TS]

is awesome and they totally [TS]

underutilized in some ways but like he's [TS]

really that good it was just right yeah [TS]

that's a great show yeah alright [TS]

anything before we go anything else one [TS]

of people went through out there really [TS]

  fast [TS]

that would be your chance to pop the [TS]

burgers okay well yes i agree i endorse [TS]

  Bob's Burgers that's a very like i said [TS]

if you're watching it is instead you get [TS]

confused yeah we'll answer your [TS]

questions well answer all of your comic [TS]

book related questions actually between [TS]

the opposite field those yet good Phil [TS]

yeah maybe we know how I feel awesome if [TS]

your questions about scorpion or CSI [TS]

cyber asked Phil or bad answer all your [TS]

bad judge questions so please [TS]

oh my god please guys please send them [TS]

  all your baggage questions [TS]

exactly it's a gift to all of us alright [TS]

I'm gonna wrap up the fall TV reviews [TS]

episode for now and forever until next [TS]

year we're going to do it again and see [TS]

which ones we have these shows make it [TS]

remember when we didn't like Gotham yeah [TS]

yeah was not only does show that feels [TS]

like that was so long yeah i know that [TS]

way and when this once Batman V Superman [TS]

came out that just took off totally took [TS]

a whole new level actually making a [TS]

flash movie and if the flash days on the [TS]

air thinking more like a different flash [TS]

what are they gonna do and it's like you [TS]

know they're just gonna do they'll do a [TS]

crossover episode to promote the movie [TS]

were flash from Earth one is right too [TS]

and they're like a you're the flash to [TS]

Wow somewhere about the flash high fives [TS]

crisis on infinite crossover over an [TS]

electric shadows suggested what if what [TS]

if the Flash movie is kinda like their [TS]

captain america what if it's an earlier [TS]

flash and you have that crossover ma'am [TS]

it's not going to be that they're just [TS]

gonna do that it's not gonna be that [TS]

clever the complete be completely in [TS]

parallel but they won't be able to [TS]

resist promoting one on the other and so [TS]

they'll do the earth parallel earth [TS]

flash crisis crisis on infinite media [TS]

yeah well that's actually how they could [TS]

reboot the Green Lantern those they [TS]

could they could ditch help Jordan just [TS]

go with somebody on Stewart Jon Stewart [TS]

played by Jon Stewart now that would be [TS]

what they as i'm sure you know Jason the [TS]

flash is how they invented the earth one [TS]

and earth to concepts in the first place [TS]

indeed I do monte so thank you for that [TS]

and we'd want to actually thank you for [TS]

being on this a plank you Jason Lieser [TS]
