00:00:00   the comparable number 280 December 2015 [TS]

00:00:09   welcome to this the fourth i believe [TS]

00:00:13   episode of the star wars incomparable [TS]

00:00:16   series of spectacular series of amazing [TS]

00:00:20   this i don't even know so I'm your host [TS]

00:00:24   Raeleen some standing in for Jason I'm [TS]

00:00:27   because one can only talk about Star [TS]

00:00:30   Wars so much i am joined today by the [TS]

00:00:33   lovely voices you heard while people are [TS]

00:00:36   attached to those voices elisa [TS]

00:00:38   Schmeisser welcome to the show [TS]

00:00:40   I'm so happy to be here me to Erica [TS]

00:00:43   inside welcome thank you so much i am [TS]

00:00:46   thrilled [TS]

00:00:47   last but certainly not least mr. David [TS]

00:00:49   jail or hello [TS]

00:00:51   and so is our first topic of the night [TS]

00:00:53   kylo Ren's hair or is it kylo Ren's hair [TS]

00:00:55   my mind Laurens hair haha actually so [TS]

00:01:00   it's amazing like well actually this is [TS]

00:01:04   really unfair um I'm sorry I've just [TS]

00:01:06   been so excited to talk to somebody [TS]

00:01:08   about his hair for days now I've been [TS]

00:01:09   sitting on an important but i guess i [TS]

00:01:12   need to find a picture of him because i [TS]

00:01:13   did not even notice his hair what he's [TS]

00:01:16   got this here it blends into his state [TS]

00:01:18   under God to get something like that [TS]

00:01:20   that the helmet he where should be sold [TS]

00:01:23   to children under the product name vo5 [TS]

00:01:25   that's how insanely well-conditioned his [TS]

00:01:26   hair is in this it's just this big [TS]

00:01:28   luxurious it's anyway um I I maybe I i [TS]

00:01:33   may just a real estate before we started [TS]

00:01:34   this thing um maybe the way to start off [TS]

00:01:38   with this is to talk about what you may [TS]

00:01:44   or may not have been expecting and how [TS]

00:01:48   we manage our emotions going into this [TS]

00:01:49   and what the experience of watching it [TS]

00:01:52   for the first time was like and what you [TS]

00:01:55   have been chewing on since you left the [TS]

00:01:56   theater [TS]

00:01:57   yeah i think that sounds great i was [TS]

00:01:58   gonna ask for opening statements so [TS]

00:02:00   that's salisa why don't you start sure [TS]

00:02:04   I'm i saw on saturday with my local nerd [TS]

00:02:09   posse and we got there an hour ahead of [TS]

00:02:12   time there is still a very very long [TS]

00:02:14   line and [TS]

00:02:15   and going into it I had tried i had [TS]

00:02:18   basically got off the internet like 30 [TS]

00:02:20   but once the months the movie premiered [TS]

00:02:21   I got off the internet and said I didn't [TS]

00:02:23   want to be spoiled [TS]

00:02:24   I didn't want to be inadvertently [TS]

00:02:25   spoiled like I knew what the name of [TS]

00:02:27   some of the characters were and had a [TS]

00:02:29   rough approximation of all things a [TS]

00:02:31   stormtrooper whatever but I didn't want [TS]

00:02:33   to know any plot twists and so you know [TS]

00:02:36   off the internet for 36 hours reading [TS]

00:02:38   home design books and we go inside and i [TS]

00:02:41   have to admit i like the minute that the [TS]

00:02:45   kraal started at the exact same angle [TS]

00:02:47   and the music comes up and you see the [TS]

00:02:48   field of stars like I'm alone I was [TS]

00:02:50   applauding along with everyone else in [TS]

00:02:51   the theater and I let out this breath i [TS]

00:02:55   had been on where i was holding and as [TS]

00:02:59   the whole movie unfolded I was like this [TS]

00:03:02   feels very familiar and at some point in [TS]

00:03:05   the middle of movies like I really don't [TS]

00:03:06   be J Andrews because who wants to be [TS]

00:03:08   handed this huge franchise along with ok [TS]

00:03:12   get a whole new generation excited and [TS]

00:03:14   involved in a way they haven't been [TS]

00:03:15   before but try not to irritate the [TS]

00:03:17   people who spent the last 35 years of [TS]

00:03:19   their lives being emotionally invested [TS]

00:03:21   in the you know the stuff that came out [TS]

00:03:23   in the seventies and by the time the [TS]

00:03:25   movie was done and we got the theater ho [TS]

00:03:26   my god he did it he did but I'm so [TS]

00:03:29   relieved that could have been really bad [TS]

00:03:31   and it was entertaining and i do want to [TS]

00:03:33   see it again because i want to see the [TS]

00:03:35   stuff i miss and huh [TS]

00:03:37   and like any year where I was really let [TS]

00:03:39   down by avengers age of ultron and I've [TS]

00:03:42   had to reckon with my feelings about the [TS]

00:03:44   marble franchise to come back to the [TS]

00:03:46   franchise that I legitimately like [TS]

00:03:49   kickstart kick-started like my sense of [TS]

00:03:51   self is up as a kindergartner even like [TS]

00:03:54   to come back to that and to see somebody [TS]

00:03:55   who is pushing it in new directions [TS]

00:03:58   while remember what made it fun in the [TS]

00:04:00   first place [TS]

00:04:00   oh my god it was such a sense of relief [TS]

00:04:02   yeah yeah I I'm on board [TS]

00:04:05   David what about you well before I say [TS]

00:04:08   anything else about it i should say that [TS]

00:04:09   I loved it great time but oh god I loved [TS]

00:04:17   it but I loved it but I went to see it [TS]

00:04:22   thursday night 8pm first showing in the [TS]

00:04:25   area took the boys my wife did not want [TS]

00:04:28   to see it [TS]

00:04:29   she's been the star wars fan in the [TS]

00:04:31   family all this time but she did not [TS]

00:04:32   want to see it yeah and we went in and [TS]

00:04:36   you know we watched it and I was I was [TS]

00:04:38   surprised it was not packed it was full [TS]

00:04:40   it was more full than I thought it was [TS]

00:04:42   going to be by the time the movie [TS]

00:04:44   started because when we got there was [TS]

00:04:47   deserted like oh ok we got here really [TS]

00:04:50   early and the boys were great you know [TS]

00:04:52   we watch the movie and the whole time [TS]

00:04:54   I'm with it and and I thought he did a [TS]

00:04:56   great job working Spock into there and [TS]

00:04:59   you know that was tough but I i did you [TS]

00:05:05   just say Spock is this lady Ashley don't [TS]

00:05:07   encourage it doesn't encourage him [TS]

00:05:10   don't encourage him well I mean JJ spent [TS]

00:05:14   two movies trying to turn Jim Kirk into [TS]

00:05:16   luke skywalker so you know this is what [TS]

00:05:19   he's been meant to do and and and that [TS]

00:05:22   might give away that I'm not a huge fan [TS]

00:05:25   of JJ's work [TS]

00:05:27   this is the best thing I think he's done [TS]

00:05:28   he did a great job with it and and yeah [TS]

00:05:31   it is a daunting thing to have to take [TS]

00:05:34   over and be the first person to do this [TS]

00:05:36   not just not just that you're doing a [TS]

00:05:38   Star Wars film but the first one who [TS]

00:05:39   isn't like blessed by George Lucas [TS]

00:05:42   however I thought there were a little [TS]

00:05:47   too many repetitious plot threads and it [TS]

00:05:53   was you know I appreciate fanservice [TS]

00:05:56   some of that was okay I appreciate [TS]

00:05:58   echoes and resonances and and all that [TS]

00:06:02   and that's great and it is it is grand [TS]

00:06:04   mythic saga storytelling that's fine but [TS]

00:06:09   the only things that really worked for [TS]

00:06:12   me in the movie where the things that [TS]

00:06:13   were completely new that were unusual [TS]

00:06:15   that surprised me that I didn't say oh [TS]

00:06:17   well I know what's going to happen next [TS]

00:06:20   everything where I started to see [TS]

00:06:22   residences I was like okay I know what's [TS]

00:06:24   gonna happen next and hopefully he's [TS]

00:06:26   going to surprise me and not one study [TS]

00:06:28   surprise me [TS]

00:06:29   so you know but i loved it was a great [TS]

00:06:32   ride the whole time and after having [TS]

00:06:35   seen the prequels in the theater this [TS]

00:06:38   was redemptive this was Star Wars again [TS]

00:06:42   so I'm okay with that you know I'm [TS]

00:06:45   waiting to see if the next two are gonna [TS]

00:06:48   be different [TS]

00:06:49   yeah I should hope so Erica what about [TS]

00:06:52   you why just first of all I want to say [TS]

00:06:54   to be fair [TS]

00:06:55   David you have like a superpower of [TS]

00:06:57   being able to tell where things are [TS]

00:06:58   going and i'm not talking about how many [TS]

00:07:01   times you have just known the entire [TS]

00:07:02   plot of what you're watching from the [TS]

00:07:04   beginning so I really don't think that [TS]

00:07:06   your assessment is is one that should be [TS]

00:07:08   it should be judged without knowing that [TS]

00:07:11   piece of information i should say part [TS]

00:07:15   of why my wife didn't want to see it is [TS]

00:07:16   because as soon as Harrison Ford was [TS]

00:07:19   cast she knew exactly what was gonna [TS]

00:07:21   happen and she knew exactly who the [TS]

00:07:23   villain was and she's not a writer so [TS]

00:07:25   when I came out and she goes well and I [TS]

00:07:28   went [TS]

00:07:28   yep that was it so it wasn't even like [TS]

00:07:32   oh well this is how much screen time he [TS]

00:07:34   has this is don't know it was just the [TS]

00:07:35   fact that he was cast in it that's it i [TS]

00:07:38   have seen it twice now the first time I [TS]

00:07:40   thought was a Thursday night and you [TS]

00:07:42   know completely full theater and then [TS]

00:07:44   the second time was sunday night in [TS]

00:07:45   another theory that was pretty much [TS]

00:07:47   completely full [TS]

00:07:48   so so yeah I loved it enough to to go [TS]

00:07:51   and see it a second time I think the [TS]

00:07:53   second time i watched it I enjoyed it [TS]

00:07:55   more simply because i was so nervous the [TS]

00:07:58   first time just because I was you know I [TS]

00:08:01   was worried that it wasn't going to be [TS]

00:08:02   good and I don't have the same quite the [TS]

00:08:04   same like childhood connection to star [TS]

00:08:06   wars that a lot of people do but I think [TS]

00:08:09   I was more worried about it just for my [TS]

00:08:11   friends sakes because you know we're [TS]

00:08:13   deeply deeply invested in it and I was [TS]

00:08:16   worried it was gonna suck and they were [TS]

00:08:17   going to be crushed and I don't want my [TS]

00:08:19   friends to ever be sad because that's [TS]

00:08:20   just that's how i roll so the second [TS]

00:08:23   time i was able to just kind of relax [TS]

00:08:24   and take it in a little bit more than [TS]

00:08:27   what than the first time and I i really [TS]

00:08:29   enjoyed all of it and this is coming [TS]

00:08:30   from someone who knows a lot about the [TS]

00:08:32   star wars universe and likes it a lot [TS]

00:08:33   but doesn't feel the same way about it [TS]

00:08:36   the kind of everybody else does [TS]

00:08:38   I mean I love the original trilogy but i [TS]

00:08:40   also love the Phantom Menace so we're [TS]

00:08:44   going to know if you are interested in [TS]

00:08:49   why I'm not going to go into it here [TS]

00:08:50   because this is not the time or the [TS]

00:08:51   place [TS]

00:08:51   listen to episode 10 of unjustly [TS]

00:08:54   maligned [TS]

00:08:54   on the incomparable network nice cross [TS]

00:08:57   roll motion that was wonderful yeah well [TS]

00:08:59   and that was my thing I mean I i did I [TS]

00:09:02   grew up with it but it wasn't I mean I [TS]

00:09:04   was always the star trek fan [TS]

00:09:06   this was the thing I liked right but my [TS]

00:09:09   wife was always the huge fan and she [TS]

00:09:13   didn't want to see this night and I said [TS]

00:09:15   is because of the prequels she said no [TS]

00:09:17   when she was younger she was not you [TS]

00:09:20   know fairytale princess and all that she [TS]

00:09:22   was not that kind of girl [TS]

00:09:24   Star Wars was her fairytale and I think [TS]

00:09:29   it's safe to say that if people have [TS]

00:09:30   listened to this mini and incomparables [TS]

00:09:32   about this movie we don't have to worry [TS]

00:09:33   about the spoiler horn basis you know I [TS]

00:09:37   was gonna say this is tyler episode just [TS]

00:09:40   take that for granted everyone [TS]

00:09:46   so basically you know it the the thought [TS]

00:09:49   of han and Leia having you know been [TS]

00:09:53   estranged for many years and their child [TS]

00:09:55   is on the dark side and all this like no [TS]

00:09:57   she didn't want to see that all she does [TS]

00:09:59   not want to see this movie even now even [TS]

00:10:01   knowing even even when I said you know [TS]

00:10:02   all the rest of it is really cool and it [TS]

00:10:04   worked i love the new characters really [TS]

00:10:06   that's great [TS]

00:10:07   not interested don't want to see I'm [TS]

00:10:10   going through a midlife crisis stuff I [TS]

00:10:12   don't want to see that in my favorite [TS]

00:10:14   movie couple ever [TS]

00:10:15   no I can totally I can totally [TS]

00:10:18   sympathize with that is jarring to see [TS]

00:10:20   the characters that you identified with [TS]

00:10:23   who have entered your own personal [TS]

00:10:25   headcanon fixing a certain spic plates [TS]

00:10:27   in space and time it's jarring to see [TS]

00:10:29   the main and and and the mortality and [TS]

00:10:32   you know being a parent now and seeing [TS]

00:10:34   these was you know that hit me which I [TS]

00:10:37   was not expecting yeah I am I grew up [TS]

00:10:40   with him so I was the story i've been [TS]

00:10:42   telling to people is and I was seven [TS]

00:10:45   months old when Return of the Jedi came [TS]

00:10:47   out the whole God my mind sorry did you [TS]

00:10:53   shrink down in your seat to just then [TS]

00:10:55   no I'm reaching for the fish all the [TS]

00:10:58   lubricant by joint so that this burning [TS]

00:11:01   jeredy yeah yeah yeah so I was seven [TS]

00:11:04   months old in Return of the Jedi came [TS]

00:11:06   out and my mom went to see the theater [TS]

00:11:08   everyone to see that the theater and she [TS]

00:11:10   took me with her because she didn't have [TS]

00:11:12   a babysitter so return of the jedi was [TS]

00:11:14   my first movie and I remember when I was [TS]

00:11:17   very very little like watching watching [TS]

00:11:20   and mom being like no look at the teddy [TS]

00:11:22   bears like watch the teddy bears and so [TS]

00:11:24   I don't have the hatred for for the the [TS]

00:11:28   he walks as many nerds do and because [TS]

00:11:31   that was like my gateway into Star Wars [TS]

00:11:33   and its kind of always been a lot like [TS]

00:11:35   Star Trek it's always kind of been in [TS]

00:11:37   the background of my life like it's just [TS]

00:11:39   something I've always taken for granted [TS]

00:11:41   because it's always been there and I [TS]

00:11:43   didn't let myself think about the force [TS]

00:11:47   awakens until we were in the theater [TS]

00:11:50   my husband was like are you excited I'm [TS]

00:11:52   like no I'm managing expectations are [TS]

00:11:54   you excited yet no I'm not thinking [TS]

00:11:57   about it I mean [TS]

00:11:58   you my expectations and I cried I cried [TS]

00:12:02   like four times during the movie [TS]

00:12:05   I cried when when the opening crawl [TS]

00:12:07   started i like because I totally see [TS]

00:12:13   David what you're saying about like the [TS]

00:12:14   fanservice but for me that hit all the [TS]

00:12:16   right notes that was like my my pat on [TS]

00:12:19   the back from JJ he totally has has [TS]

00:12:23   destroyed star trek for me that was my [TS]

00:12:26   pad on the bag like it it's okay this is [TS]

00:12:29   for you I understand where you're coming [TS]

00:12:31   from and who you are that was you know [TS]

00:12:34   and and even though the second time i [TS]

00:12:35   watched I was like okay some of these [TS]

00:12:36   Han and Chewie exchanges maybe you know [TS]

00:12:38   we could do without but you know it was [TS]

00:12:40   still like that reassuring like this is [TS]

00:12:42   okay and I think that's why they're in [TS]

00:12:44   there and and I i didn't really mind [TS]

00:12:46   those it was it was purely the the plot [TS]

00:12:50   elements that were slavish Lee [TS]

00:12:53   duplicated like just no style [TS]

00:12:56   ok you are going to have to debate this [TS]

00:12:59   a little bit and well because my overall [TS]

00:13:05   theory theory of Star Wars it's two [TS]

00:13:07   thoughts star trek theory of track [TS]

00:13:09   sounds much cooler at the whole point of [TS]

00:13:11   Star Wars it's even and universe to it's [TS]

00:13:13   an epic cycle and the worry and the way [TS]

00:13:17   I saw the reason I saw so many [TS]

00:13:20   intentional parallels between episode 4 [TS]

00:13:22   episode 7 was to prime the audience for [TS]

00:13:26   the fact that the same struggle is [TS]

00:13:29   happening and it's just as a new [TS]

00:13:31   generation that's picked it up and the [TS]

00:13:33   dramatics takes that we have in this [TS]

00:13:36   iteration of the cycle the questions are [TS]

00:13:39   will we see history repeat itself is the [TS]

00:13:42   cycle unchanging or can people do things [TS]

00:13:45   that permanently alter the the [TS]

00:13:47   permanently alter that the circuit of [TS]

00:13:49   events that's good that's going to come [TS]

00:13:51   around totally and you know and and i [TS]

00:13:54   like that they made Han Solo the Ben [TS]

00:13:57   Kenobi figure I'm not ice [TS]

00:13:59   I love that and what I really love about [TS]

00:14:01   that is when he came on and using a [TS]

00:14:03   swashbuckling but my first snipe that [TS]

00:14:05   was Oh Harrison Ford's just too old to [TS]

00:14:07   pull this off and then I realized that [TS]

00:14:09   what they were doing is this is a dude [TS]

00:14:11   who's basically [TS]

00:14:12   going through the motions and falling [TS]

00:14:13   back on unhealthy coping mechanisms [TS]

00:14:15   because something so big and so bad [TS]

00:14:17   happened that it probably broke him and [TS]

00:14:19   his capacity to believe in himself as a [TS]

00:14:21   better man and like once I started and [TS]

00:14:25   then once i looked at the performance [TS]

00:14:26   that way like it made a lot more sense [TS]

00:14:28   and I was a lot less irritated with the [TS]

00:14:30   initial hump presentation and so I I'd [TS]

00:14:33   like the parallels I like that layer or [TS]

00:14:35   Ghana has gone from being this 19 year [TS]

00:14:37   old upstart to you know this this really [TS]

00:14:40   tired general and I like that we're [TS]

00:14:43   already seeing variations on the theme [TS]

00:14:45   on the NSA my cycle because you have [TS]

00:14:48   somebody you know like the baddies mom [TS]

00:14:51   is fighting for his hole which is not [TS]

00:14:53   something that's happened in the [TS]

00:14:55   previous cycles i love that are Luke [TS]

00:14:58   Skywalker's a woman this time around [TS]

00:14:59   like I can't even begin to talk about [TS]

00:15:02   like how powerful and moving that is to [TS]

00:15:05   me and i also like that we're seeing [TS]

00:15:08   more fleshed-out elements of what it's [TS]

00:15:10   like to live under the the Empire and I [TS]

00:15:13   think these are like little plot too [TS]

00:15:15   many clues that this iteration of the [TS]

00:15:17   cycle is going to be slightly different [TS]

00:15:18   directions but you are going to have to [TS]

00:15:20   expect things like a warped train or [TS]

00:15:24   trainer mentee dynamic family issues [TS]

00:15:28   working themselves out [TS]

00:15:29   you know stuff like that I i should i [TS]

00:15:33   should say I'd all of that is exactly [TS]

00:15:36   right [TS]

00:15:37   I'm a hundred percent with you it is [TS]

00:15:40   literally the mechanical plot elements [TS]

00:15:42   of they have to destroy it's like okay [TS]

00:15:45   if the Death Star didn't work twice then [TS]

00:15:48   let's just build a gigantic version of [TS]

00:15:50   it with the same problem with the same [TS]

00:15:52   with the same kind of flaw to it [TS]

00:15:54   yeah and you know let's let's hide a [TS]

00:15:57   little piece of information in a droid [TS]

00:16:00   ok let's go to the same kind of high of [TS]

00:16:03   Richard scum [TS]

00:16:04   it's ok to do other things along the way [TS]

00:16:08   the grand the grand parts of it were [TS]

00:16:10   perfect [TS]

00:16:11   it's you look at the elements though [TS]

00:16:12   like finding that piece of hidden [TS]

00:16:14   information is always part of any [TS]

00:16:17   narrative quest and the fact that like [TS]

00:16:20   it obviously worked for Princess Leia so [TS]

00:16:22   like why wouldn't this be part of the [TS]

00:16:23   Rebel playbook right i mean i said [TS]

00:16:25   like something that Luke would totally [TS]

00:16:27   do be like you know he's a little bit [TS]

00:16:28   sentimental as he's going away [TS]

00:16:30   why not do exactly that and building a [TS]

00:16:32   death building like a planet star [TS]

00:16:34   whatever you want to call it sucks the [TS]

00:16:36   energy out of the Sun because hand-wave [TS]

00:16:37   hand-wave hand wave like this is exactly [TS]

00:16:40   what you would expect nazi general [TS]

00:16:42   weasley to come up with because this is [TS]

00:16:44   the Empire and they can't believe they [TS]

00:16:46   can win they can't be so they can't put [TS]

00:16:49   the thing is do you really think the [TS]

00:16:50   Empire like is filled with scientists [TS]

00:16:52   are like we're going to disrupt the [TS]

00:16:53   paradigm of planet blower-upper thing is [TS]

00:16:54   like like there's no silicon valley in [TS]

00:16:57   the Empire it's just not that's [TS]

00:17:00   generally that just they tried to [TS]

00:17:01   improve upon their model and instead of [TS]

00:17:03   instead of building a new one they used [TS]

00:17:05   a planet to create one and let's just [TS]

00:17:08   make it bigger [TS]

00:17:09   yeah I ever and it wasn't like there it [TS]

00:17:12   was not like there was you know an open [TS]

00:17:13   hole that somebody could fly into and [TS]

00:17:15   just shoot it let's let's let's be fair [TS]

00:17:17   they're actually had to send a squad and [TS]

00:17:19   it took more than one shot and one ship [TS]

00:17:21   was yeah as a matter of fact that all of [TS]

00:17:24   those shots that didn't work at all what [TS]

00:17:26   it took was the people are physically [TS]

00:17:28   sneaking inside blowing it up from the [TS]

00:17:30   inside which created a new hole that [TS]

00:17:32   they were then able to to to use to get [TS]

00:17:36   in there and blow it up so it was the [TS]

00:17:38   only reason a an x-wing was able to get [TS]

00:17:40   in there and blow it up is because on [TS]

00:17:42   solo had done the work first right well [TS]

00:17:45   in and speaking of resonance and you [TS]

00:17:47   know one of the things I worried about [TS]

00:17:48   when when the movie started and so [TS]

00:17:51   they're estranged and all that was the [TS]

00:17:52   thought that well you know the journey [TS]

00:17:54   he went on in the first trilogy where [TS]

00:17:57   he's kind of redeemed from being the [TS]

00:17:58   scruffy smuggler type [TS]

00:18:01   well that's all out the window but with [TS]

00:18:03   a dove they did a beautiful job of [TS]

00:18:06   actually carrying it forward and [TS]

00:18:08   implausibly going ok this is where he [TS]

00:18:11   would be if this happened and not only [TS]

00:18:15   that he's not really the scruffy stuck [TS]

00:18:17   smuggler anymore i almost said scruffy [TS]

00:18:19   snuggler which everybody i think is that [TS]

00:18:22   for a while to me was always yeah that [TS]

00:18:24   happened and but you know it is sort of [TS]

00:18:27   the resonance of that final moment on [TS]

00:18:30   the bridge right we're now it's echoing [TS]

00:18:33   that moment where Ben and Darth Vader or [TS]

00:18:36   about to [TS]

00:18:37   fighting the Death Star and they're all [TS]

00:18:39   watching that happen right and and he's [TS]

00:18:41   the one is like my kid we just gotta go [TS]

00:18:43   no now but now he's the one who's not [TS]

00:18:46   only making it happen he's the one [TS]

00:18:49   stepping forward he is literally been in [TS]

00:18:51   that moment [TS]

00:18:52   exactly which is beautiful you had that [TS]

00:18:55   whole thing that's you know I can I can [TS]

00:18:58   forgive all the other plot mechanics [TS]

00:19:00   just because that was so nicely done and [TS]

00:19:03   and it carried his protagonist journey [TS]

00:19:06   to its proper our conclusion was just [TS]

00:19:10   lovely [TS]

00:19:10   I knew that was gonna happen like I knew [TS]

00:19:12   he was gonna die when they embarked upon [TS]

00:19:16   the rescue mission right when it was [TS]

00:19:17   chewy and hot and and Finn going into [TS]

00:19:22   the base I was like yeah he's he's gonna [TS]

00:19:25   die because he he's obviously been right [TS]

00:19:27   well he spent the whole movie saying hey [TS]

00:19:30   this is great tomorrow is my my [TS]

00:19:32   retirement this is your last day of work [TS]

00:19:34   of course yeah there's also too much of [TS]

00:19:37   him in there for him to be back for more [TS]

00:19:38   movies you know that but like so I spent [TS]

00:19:41   that whole time they were on the base [TS]

00:19:42   just like okay he's gonna die when is it [TS]

00:19:45   going to happen when is it can happen [TS]

00:19:46   like when it like I was just waiting for [TS]

00:19:49   him to die like that whole time I kind [TS]

00:19:52   of was [TS]

00:19:53   I'd forgotten about it by that time but [TS]

00:19:55   the the moment that I figured out that [TS]

00:19:56   Han Solo was going to die was actually [TS]

00:19:58   when I was listening to the incomparable [TS]

00:20:00   episode where Jason and red and John and [TS]

00:20:03   Danny were talking about their [TS]

00:20:04   excitement for the movie and like their [TS]

00:20:05   expectations the spoiler free one not [TS]

00:20:08   talking about a trailer and serenity was [TS]

00:20:10   saying how she was was really excited [TS]

00:20:14   for this film and the thing that made [TS]

00:20:15   her get her hopes up the most was seeing [TS]

00:20:17   Harrison Ford be interviewed about it [TS]

00:20:20   and how he's such a notorious grump in [TS]

00:20:22   interviews and he actually seemed kind [TS]

00:20:24   of enthusiastic and a little bit jazzed [TS]

00:20:26   about this film and she thought if this [TS]

00:20:28   is enough for Harrison Ford to be you [TS]

00:20:30   know kind of smiling and enthusiastic [TS]

00:20:32   and having fun with it that means it's [TS]

00:20:33   probably a really good movie and in my [TS]

00:20:35   head I'm going know that means his [TS]

00:20:37   character is going to die he's a giant [TS]

00:20:38   grumpy troll and he's just sitting there [TS]

00:20:40   on the stage thinking haha guys you're [TS]

00:20:42   gonna have to watch me die and it's just [TS]

00:20:44   relieved you start with the franchise [TS]

00:20:45   now we don't I don't [TS]

00:20:47   to come back for two more exactly yeah [TS]

00:20:50   but that it was I liked that there were [TS]

00:20:53   all of those echoes because um and and I [TS]

00:20:56   liked him [TS]

00:20:57   I can't remember Lupita's character's [TS]

00:21:00   name and the possible as mom as cannot [TS]

00:21:02   mass cannot thank you cannot i have [TS]

00:21:04   you're always gonna find watering holes [TS]

00:21:06   in frontiers I mean I get that we had [TS]

00:21:07   the Tatooine thing with the wretched [TS]

00:21:10   hive of scum and villainy and you meet [TS]

00:21:11   han Solo there and so on and so forth [TS]

00:21:12   but this is one of the things I've [TS]

00:21:14   always appreciated i like the trading [TS]

00:21:16   posts i love seeing cloud city in the [TS]

00:21:18   but the last iteration of the cycle for [TS]

00:21:21   example i actually think that was one [TS]

00:21:23   thing that was kind of missing from [TS]

00:21:24   episodes 123 was all the cultures were [TS]

00:21:27   so siloed and the Jedi seem to be you [TS]

00:21:30   know the only ones that come to move [TS]

00:21:31   around i like the idea that you do have [TS]

00:21:34   these shifting you do have these places [TS]

00:21:37   that after shifting borderlands where [TS]

00:21:38   course that's where Han Solo that's what [TS]

00:21:41   console is gonna he's gonna find another [TS]

00:21:42   one [TS]

00:21:43   yeah that's right he's gonna know where [TS]

00:21:44   they are it's a place to exchange [TS]

00:21:45   information six place to be well it's [TS]

00:21:47   supposed to get lost it's a place to [TS]

00:21:48   find something you're looking for but [TS]

00:21:50   what I loved about this one was it felt [TS]

00:21:53   so timeless I mean you have that statue [TS]

00:21:55   up there which which gave the impression [TS]

00:21:57   of of great age as it were [TS]

00:21:59   he did say she'd run it for a thousand [TS]

00:22:01   years exactly and then you all those [TS]

00:22:02   banners and whether or not it was [TS]

00:22:05   intentional as kind of a guide invited [TS]

00:22:07   to it and I like entrust that character [TS]

00:22:10   as well i'm a sucker for mortal [TS]

00:22:12   bartenders i guess and method I i was [TS]

00:22:15   also getting kind of a Marion Ravenwood [TS]

00:22:17   vibe to it's like that's like her place [TS]

00:22:20   and raiders I like the whole well this [TS]

00:22:23   works for these cultures so you know [TS]

00:22:25   we're going to go back and we're gonna [TS]

00:22:26   finally blown up all that we've blown up [TS]

00:22:29   all the Jacen and Jaina Skywalker pink [TS]

00:22:31   get whatever business that that Lucas [TS]

00:22:33   with the twins and and all that you know [TS]

00:22:36   we blow up all this stuff that you nerds [TS]

00:22:38   have considered continuity for years and [TS]

00:22:39   we're starting fresh but i like that it [TS]

00:22:43   seems like there's a lot of really rich [TS]

00:22:46   cultural texture that they're they're [TS]

00:22:48   pulling into it the same way I'm kind of [TS]

00:22:51   fascinated by the thriving scavenger [TS]

00:22:52   business that's going on Jacko like the [TS]

00:22:56   fact that the Empire doesn't come back [TS]

00:22:58   to clean up or salvage any way shape or [TS]

00:23:00   form [TS]

00:23:00   I find that really interesting and weird [TS]

00:23:01   and I really this is their way of doing [TS]

00:23:04   the salvage I mean they very very likely [TS]

00:23:06   could be the ones you know the first [TS]

00:23:07   order that are buying all of those parts [TS]

00:23:10   off of the merchants who are selling you [TS]

00:23:11   know buying it with bread and now [TS]

00:23:14   because i'm wondering why you wouldn't [TS]

00:23:15   just you know send all those are all [TS]

00:23:17   children of their stealing from other [TS]

00:23:19   cultures in turning into stormtroopers [TS]

00:23:20   why you wouldn't just do like if you can [TS]

00:23:22   ascend pushing a broom as a sanitation [TS]

00:23:24   engineer in a facility could certainly [TS]

00:23:26   have these dudes trippin around the trip [TS]

00:23:28   around that's necessarily I mean they [TS]

00:23:29   may have lost a good chunk of their of [TS]

00:23:33   their workforce [TS]

00:23:34   well they want a big-ass rocking into [TS]

00:23:35   this movie [TS]

00:23:37   very true so I mean I think it's [TS]

00:23:40   probably the priorities are keeping [TS]

00:23:42   things set on under their new Starkiller [TS]

00:23:45   base as opposed to you you know [TS]

00:23:47   scavenging parts that may or may not [TS]

00:23:48   even be useful i am just who leaves its [TS]

00:23:52   small child on a planet like that I want [TS]

00:23:54   to find out the like I like that they're [TS]

00:23:55   enraged to questions that are bugging me [TS]

00:23:57   and he it was Lou he's not supposed to [TS]

00:24:00   have kids like this is how we got-we [TS]

00:24:02   we've gotten three generations of [TS]

00:24:03   skywalker DNA monkeying with the [TS]

00:24:06   universe's is that one of them couldn't [TS]

00:24:07   keep his pants maybe I don't know I feel [TS]

00:24:09   like that the loop thing is a little eat [TS]

00:24:11   that's a little too i think so too yeah [TS]

00:24:13   first that's without my first I was like [TS]

00:24:14   all it's obvious but then actually then [TS]

00:24:16   Stephen my husband was pointing out to [TS]

00:24:17   me that in that very last scene where [TS]

00:24:20   it's it's just the two of them and [TS]

00:24:21   they're not speaking he's not actually [TS]

00:24:23   looking at ray he's looking at the [TS]

00:24:25   lightsaber that his daughter he would [TS]

00:24:26   not be looking at the lightsaber yeah [TS]

00:24:28   yeah maybe she's a Kenobi [TS]

00:24:31   mm well interested that's the raises the [TS]

00:24:34   question did obi-wan Kenobi bother [TS]

00:24:36   sticking to the Jedi Code after he ran [TS]

00:24:38   off to Tatooine [TS]

00:24:39   oh god no i mean like you had a girl [TS]

00:24:46   having a backwater and I board but let's [TS]

00:24:51   talk about Ray because she is [TS]

00:24:54   I mean I'm sure that other panels talked [TS]

00:24:56   about her but whatever we're gonna do it [TS]

00:24:58   because i have enough to be squeezed [TS]

00:25:00   right of any right or no [TS]

00:25:02   over and over again so we've got this [TS]

00:25:05   little girl we get like this very brief [TS]

00:25:08   glance of her backstory and other than [TS]

00:25:11   seeing her be amazing like taking things [TS]

00:25:14   apart exploring the desert inn in an [TS]

00:25:18   effort to take things apart and we have [TS]

00:25:20   some hints that are past like she's able [TS]

00:25:22   to pilot she knows about the [TS]

00:25:24   modifications made to the more the the [TS]

00:25:26   Falcon so like obviously she's i know i [TS]

00:25:29   don't know there's like something [TS]

00:25:31   happening there and she's really complex [TS]

00:25:34   and really really awesome [TS]

00:25:36   she uh gosh i love her so much as a [TS]

00:25:37   character yeah i might might you know we [TS]

00:25:41   have the thing of you know why aren't [TS]

00:25:42   there any action figures of rain why are [TS]

00:25:44   they all the men why why does the [TS]

00:25:47   multipack like all the men and then like [TS]

00:25:49   an extra tie fighter pilot why isn't ray [TS]

00:25:51   in there instead of a TIE fighter pilot [TS]

00:25:53   right here and and mine mine goes yeah [TS]

00:25:56   i'd like to get raked she's cool she's [TS]

00:25:58   the hero [TS]

00:25:59   I guess we can get fit and post so she [TS]

00:26:00   can rescue them [TS]

00:26:02   yeah so she can rescue them actually [TS]

00:26:04   like yes this is the greatest part is is [TS]

00:26:07   I loved it when she's like stop holding [TS]

00:26:09   my hand is her haha markets and I i was [TS]

00:26:12   thinking back to how I would have [TS]

00:26:15   reacted seeing this as a five or [TS]

00:26:17   six-year-old because i saw at the time [TS]

00:26:19   so I told the story and podcast before I [TS]

00:26:21   saw stars my kindergarten class was a [TS]

00:26:23   field trip and I distinctly recall like [TS]

00:26:26   my feet being too my legs sticking out [TS]

00:26:27   on the cinema see because the seat was [TS]

00:26:29   so big but like the reason and i [TS]

00:26:31   imprinted on Princess Leia his she was [TS]

00:26:34   literally like nothing else I had ever [TS]

00:26:36   seen you know and this is the kind of [TS]

00:26:38   business I want to be rather than the [TS]

00:26:40   one that sits around Simpers of birds [TS]

00:26:41   until she falls asleep or whatever you [TS]

00:26:43   you and my wife we get along [TS]

00:26:44   I don't be letting and when I watched [TS]

00:26:47   this and I saw ray [TS]

00:26:50   it was almost like traveling back in [TS]

00:26:51   time to that younger person and thinking [TS]

00:26:53   wow this is you she's even better than [TS]

00:26:55   princess late because granted Princess [TS]

00:26:57   Leia that's a really high bar for what [TS]

00:26:59   she could do but you have somebody who [TS]

00:27:01   you know who survives is really brutal [TS]

00:27:06   world you know she's surviving she's not [TS]

00:27:08   she's not thriving necessarily but she's [TS]

00:27:10   not it [TS]

00:27:12   she she's not you know so destitute that [TS]

00:27:15   she's in danger of [TS]

00:27:16   of dying for any for any reason you know [TS]

00:27:17   she's she's got ambition she's got focus [TS]

00:27:20   she's got skills and she's adaptable and [TS]

00:27:24   has a principals in her code and is [TS]

00:27:28   resilient and tough and large source [TS]

00:27:30   file and learns quickly [TS]

00:27:32   yep and you know you look at everything [TS]

00:27:35   that she is and she does and how [TS]

00:27:37   fiercely loyal she's to people and how [TS]

00:27:40   donation she is and I kept thinking wow [TS]

00:27:42   that is there are going to be the little [TS]

00:27:44   girls across this country who I'm you [TS]

00:27:47   know if they were using justin from toy [TS]

00:27:49   story is there a little before like [TS]

00:27:51   raised on their mental toy shelf next to [TS]

00:27:52   jesse and Rainbow Dash and all of the [TS]

00:27:56   other all of the other strong determined [TS]

00:28:00   tenacious resourceful characters that [TS]

00:28:02   populate the world and i love that we [TS]

00:28:05   have that I love that she's not a [TS]

00:28:07   girlfriend like this has been my big [TS]

00:28:08   complaint about the star trek reboot is [TS]

00:28:11   how poorly the female characters have [TS]

00:28:14   fared yep and I've been having that [TS]

00:28:17   problem and having that problem with [TS]

00:28:18   Marvel to like I think this is one of [TS]

00:28:22   the reasons i'm so happy about jessica [TS]

00:28:23   jones is because it's breaking the [TS]

00:28:25   streak but you know I've been going to [TS]

00:28:27   marvel movies where I asked you were [TS]

00:28:29   asked where asked to imagine a world [TS]

00:28:31   where space aliens are secretly vikings [TS]

00:28:32   and and Mandy can turn into giant [TS]

00:28:35   reading range machines after being [TS]

00:28:36   exposed to radiation and like apparently [TS]

00:28:39   the idea that women would maybe hang out [TS]

00:28:42   with each other or have agency or [TS]

00:28:44   anything like that like that beggars [TS]

00:28:45   belief [TS]

00:28:46   so that's that science-fiction yeah Oh [TS]

00:28:49   what that's crazy talk so it was nice [TS]

00:28:51   that star wars just treat it so [TS]

00:28:53   matter-of-factly like of course a of [TS]

00:28:56   course Leigh is the general who has more [TS]

00:28:57   experience with crazy Skywalker's going [TS]

00:28:59   to the dark side and cheetahs and of [TS]

00:29:02   course ray manages very well on her own [TS]

00:29:05   and she's strong in the force and of [TS]

00:29:07   course the thousand-year-old bartender [TS]

00:29:08   who happens two to run one of the most [TS]

00:29:10   successful culture trading post as part [TS]

00:29:12   of the university's lady and of course [TS]

00:29:14   like I was telling my husband who would [TS]

00:29:17   go see a movie with me because he really [TS]

00:29:19   liked that turned off by the prequels i [TS]

00:29:20   was like i said it was so nice to just [TS]

00:29:23   see when included they were just there [TS]

00:29:26   like everywhere there in the background [TS]

00:29:28   they were running things that was [TS]

00:29:29   fighter pilot was a woman because i can [TS]

00:29:31   remember watching she was child and [TS]

00:29:33   being like why are there no female [TS]

00:29:34   pilots or why why are there no female [TS]

00:29:36   smokers and like it was so nice just to [TS]

00:29:39   see how much more radical egalitarianism [TS]

00:29:41   this this movie was in the stuff that [TS]

00:29:44   came before it [TS]

00:29:45   well to be fair i believe Jedi did have [TS]

00:29:46   a female pilot which is still the same [TS]

00:29:48   ratio that we have for this one yes [TS]

00:29:50   there's only one in this correct [TS]

00:29:52   yeah she has lines that which I'm very [TS]

00:29:54   excited I is I honestly thought she was [TS]

00:29:57   gonna die because I'm like oh god [TS]

00:29:58   anytime you see a woman who's hanging [TS]

00:29:59   with the boys she gets killed I all I [TS]

00:30:02   could think was if if there had been a [TS]

00:30:03   female fighter pilot in the original [TS]

00:30:06   Star Wars it's like naming the fat guy [TS]

00:30:09   Porkins here would have been like [TS]

00:30:10   pleading guy or something [TS]

00:30:13   flylady yeah well sliding five are you [TS]

00:30:17   ready to this is the first movie I've [TS]

00:30:20   walked out of in i do walked out of it [TS]

00:30:23   out but i don't know where i was going [TS]

00:30:26   to say recent memory but like just [TS]

00:30:28   memory where I I felt really good [TS]

00:30:31   because you know the typical thing is [TS]

00:30:34   like oh we've got this woman and she's [TS]

00:30:36   strong and resourceful and tenacious and [TS]

00:30:38   like all those those traits that Lisa [TS]

00:30:40   listed and then in the last half hour [TS]

00:30:43   she needs to be rescued by the fin and [TS]

00:30:45   Han and Chewie and she didn't ray didn't [TS]

00:30:49   need that Ray was capable written up [TS]

00:30:52   later so I loved it right the whole [TS]

00:30:55   thing and I you know I walked out of [TS]

00:30:57   guardians of the galaxy feeling really [TS]

00:30:59   really bad i walked out of an age of [TS]

00:31:01   Ultron Ultron feeling really really [TS]

00:31:03   meant like scarlett johansson is is the [TS]

00:31:06   Hulk's girlfriend in that movie [TS]

00:31:08   well like kind of an kind of Hawkeye's [TS]

00:31:12   like I don't know like jealous of his [TS]

00:31:14   family like I don't it was just bizarre [TS]

00:31:16   to me and the same for Star Trek we have [TS]

00:31:19   and we have scientist lady who strips [TS]

00:31:25   down to her underwear for no reason like [TS]

00:31:26   constant constant let downs in my [TS]

00:31:29   science fiction which is a kid nearly [TS]

00:31:32   disappointing and this didn't have that [TS]

00:31:34   and I walked out and I was like this [TS]

00:31:36   this is the movie i have been waiting [TS]

00:31:39   for forever at the bit at the [TS]

00:31:42   the risk of bringing it down i still [TS]

00:31:44   think it's aight i still think it's [TS]

00:31:46   hogwash that you cast a woman of color [TS]

00:31:48   and then hydrogen cgi I was just going [TS]

00:31:50   to say that like I don't understand why [TS]

00:31:53   we don't have did they decide after she [TS]

00:31:56   was cast if they were gonna make that [TS]

00:31:57   character cgi because that would suck [TS]

00:31:59   I don't know I don't know I don't think [TS]

00:32:01   so but yes I'm okay then i but then i [TS]

00:32:05   don't feel like that but I mean I think [TS]

00:32:07   she was designed to be Yoda sk yeah but [TS]

00:32:10   which again resonance it's such a it is [TS]

00:32:14   a little crazy to me that in Star Wars [TS]

00:32:17   you have more characters who are you [TS]

00:32:20   know made with rubber masks or CGI or [TS]

00:32:24   who are droids who have lines and agency [TS]

00:32:27   and and speaking parts in this world [TS]

00:32:30   then you do men of color much as women [TS]

00:32:33   of color like it's it's still a [TS]

00:32:35   relentlessly white universe and we just [TS]

00:32:38   the thing that kind of baffles me you [TS]

00:32:40   know and anyone spreading a wide net [TS]

00:32:42   here to also include star trek and also [TS]

00:32:44   include the marvel vs um it is crazy to [TS]

00:32:47   me that if you have a medium that isn't [TS]

00:32:49   that that is inherently built on we took [TS]

00:32:51   this world moved at 45 degrees and [TS]

00:32:54   through and crazy stuff that like [TS]

00:32:55   somehow your standard is still lots of [TS]

00:32:57   white dudes you know [TS]

00:32:59   yeah and so while i'm excited that John [TS]

00:33:01   boyega is obviously going to be an [TS]

00:33:03   important part of this franchise hooray [TS]

00:33:05   and Daisy Ridley hooray [TS]

00:33:10   you know it's it's still it's a lot of [TS]

00:33:14   dudes and I was the others along a lot [TS]

00:33:16   of white people [TS]

00:33:17   yeah this is a long way to go but i i'm [TS]

00:33:18   i'm still at the same time happy that [TS]

00:33:21   they've gotten as far they have and then [TS]

00:33:22   going back to just talking about Ray for [TS]

00:33:23   a moment [TS]

00:33:24   um one of the things I love about her is [TS]

00:33:26   that she is super awesome and super [TS]

00:33:28   capable but she's not infallible like [TS]

00:33:30   she's right of getting to see her screw [TS]

00:33:33   up for example accidentally opening the [TS]

00:33:35   doors to the ship to let go crazy [TS]

00:33:37   monster monster beast that was such a [TS]

00:33:40   great sequence which was you know kind [TS]

00:33:41   of it a little bit of hilarity and then [TS]

00:33:44   also just seeing her screw up and she's [TS]

00:33:46   also kind of socially a little bit weird [TS]

00:33:49   and awkward because she's lived by [TS]

00:33:50   yourself in an at4 like her entire life [TS]

00:33:53   practically so it's a [TS]

00:33:56   it's nice that she isn't a hundred [TS]

00:33:58   percent on the ball all the time and we [TS]

00:34:00   get to see it when she's not [TS]

00:34:02   yeah and it's nice to see your mess up [TS]

00:34:04   and be like instead of like beating [TS]

00:34:05   herself up she's like okay that didn't [TS]

00:34:08   go the way I expected [TS]

00:34:10   how do i fix it and it was good to see [TS]

00:34:12   and that's the kind of attitude you'd [TS]

00:34:14   expect from somebody who grew up and [TS]

00:34:16   managed to make it to the age that she [TS]

00:34:18   is at on a planet like Jack who [TS]

00:34:20   yeah and it's like all the talk online [TS]

00:34:22   from certain quarters that all she's a [TS]

00:34:25   mary-sue well you know friends look well [TS]

00:34:28   no no no no a hero is designed to be [TS]

00:34:33   idealized his he or she is designed to [TS]

00:34:37   be the person that we identify with that [TS]

00:34:39   we want to be in that story a mary-sue [TS]

00:34:42   is someone who comes into the story that [TS]

00:34:45   as a proxy is a proxy for the writer is [TS]

00:34:48   a proxy for the fan who is the best [TS]

00:34:51   thing ever and then leaves they're not a [TS]

00:34:53   permanent part of that story they're not [TS]

00:34:55   the enemy that's it came from Star Trek [TS]

00:34:57   fan fiction that's where the term comes [TS]

00:34:59   from and you know it's like oh here's an [TS]

00:35:02   insulin who saves the ship and saved [TS]

00:35:05   everybody's lives and gets promoted all [TS]

00:35:06   the way to Admiral in the course of half [TS]

00:35:08   an hour that's a mary-sue this is just a [TS]

00:35:11   hero and she's meant to be the [TS]

00:35:13   cornerstone of this next section of the [TS]

00:35:16   saga that is not a mary-sue that is a [TS]

00:35:18   hero [TS]

00:35:19   so I guess the question I have is is [TS]

00:35:21   nerd culture or more specifically dude [TS]

00:35:23   nerd culture so accustomed to women as [TS]

00:35:26   objects to be one or supporting [TS]

00:35:30   characters who give the men something to [TS]

00:35:33   do IE rescue them with them whatever or [TS]

00:35:35   or background wallpaper that they can't [TS]

00:35:38   handle it when women have that the [TS]

00:35:41   defining traits of of the protagonists [TS]

00:35:42   in the hero that might be part of it but [TS]

00:35:45   i think i think what it boils down to it [TS]

00:35:48   and even a deeper level than that is [TS]

00:35:49   that as women we have been taught our [TS]

00:35:53   entire lives to we've learned how to [TS]

00:35:55   empathize with the male characters who [TS]

00:35:56   have been at the center of all these [TS]

00:35:57   adventure stories boys were never taught [TS]

00:36:00   to do that with girl characters so they [TS]

00:36:02   now see this person who is awesome and [TS]

00:36:04   who is the center of this film and they [TS]

00:36:06   are many of them are not equipped to [TS]

00:36:09   empathize with this character that they [TS]

00:36:11   feel that it's wrong for them to sort of [TS]

00:36:13   put themselves in this character shoes [TS]

00:36:15   because my god she's a girl [TS]

00:36:16   whereas we've been doing that with point [TS]

00:36:17   characters forever and ever and ever so [TS]

00:36:19   we have no trouble with it so it's it's [TS]

00:36:21   it's basically a new skill set that [TS]

00:36:23   needs to be built by an awful awful lot [TS]

00:36:25   of people [TS]

00:36:26   yeah and I mean honestly if more people [TS]

00:36:28   could step outside of themselves and [TS]

00:36:30   empathize with someone who doesn't look [TS]

00:36:32   just like them [TS]

00:36:33   what does that solve a lot of problems [TS]

00:36:35   in the world today [TS]

00:36:36   no didn't you know i mean i was i was [TS]

00:36:39   raised when I was a child my mother was [TS]

00:36:42   a single mother and so everything that I [TS]

00:36:45   got all of the the pop-culture I got [TS]

00:36:48   came filtered through that experience [TS]

00:36:49   and and the importance of being able to [TS]

00:36:52   see elements of yourself four elements [TS]

00:36:56   that you would like to be part of [TS]

00:36:58   yourself in people who were not at all [TS]

00:37:00   like yourself and you know I i feel very [TS]

00:37:04   lucky about that I try to do that but [TS]

00:37:05   with our kids it's like you know it's [TS]

00:37:08   okay i mean that's what it my 14 year [TS]

00:37:11   olds favorite movie of the year was fury [TS]

00:37:14   road my 11 year olds favorite was inside [TS]

00:37:16   out our favorite altogether was was the [TS]

00:37:19   force awakens what's the thread they're [TS]

00:37:21   all females they're all that's the hero [TS]

00:37:23   anyway and that's and I do it as you [TS]

00:37:29   kind of mentioned before lean i love [TS]

00:37:31   that that they don't really make a big [TS]

00:37:34   deal out of the fact that she is a girl [TS]

00:37:36   they don't make a big deal out of the [TS]

00:37:37   fact that that fame is a black man they [TS]

00:37:40   just they are these characters and [TS]

00:37:42   they're interacting in the way that they [TS]

00:37:44   are just as people like currently own [TS]

00:37:46   and I'm sure this which this I'm sure [TS]

00:37:47   this will change after I've seen it a [TS]

00:37:49   few more times because my favorite bits [TS]

00:37:50   of movies always change but my current [TS]

00:37:52   favorite chunk of the film is from the [TS]

00:37:56   time that thing gets to the outpost [TS]

00:37:57   where where ray buerre lives and you [TS]

00:38:01   know sees her and goes to rescue her and [TS]

00:38:03   then realizes why don't let me just idle [TS]

00:38:05   away here she clearly doesn't need any [TS]

00:38:07   help and down all the way like all of [TS]

00:38:10   their interactions through running [TS]

00:38:12   through stealing the Millennium Falcon [TS]

00:38:13   until the point where they have escaped [TS]

00:38:15   the planet and it's in an open the [TS]

00:38:17   autopilot in space or something like [TS]

00:38:19   that and they meet each other in the [TS]

00:38:20   corridor and their excitedly talking [TS]

00:38:22   over each other [TS]

00:38:23   and they just they're so jazz in the end [TS]

00:38:25   with this big hug it's like that's [TS]

00:38:27   that's the kind of reaction that i want [TS]

00:38:29   to see more in movies after an [TS]

00:38:31   experience like this so often characters [TS]

00:38:33   just sort of like yeah they brush it off [TS]

00:38:35   we've just been through something crazy [TS]

00:38:36   cool we lived know this is this is what [TS]

00:38:38   I would be doing I'd be freaking the [TS]

00:38:40   heck out what somebody hug and that is [TS]

00:38:42   what they do and they don't make a big [TS]

00:38:43   deal that she's a girl he's black [TS]

00:38:45   they're just they just hug right i think [TS]

00:38:47   what made my gave me a lump in my throat [TS]

00:38:49   of that though is they're both such [TS]

00:38:51   lonely people [TS]

00:38:52   yes and part of the reason they're so [TS]

00:38:55   getting and they're hugging is because [TS]

00:38:57   for the first time they're not alone and [TS]

00:38:59   that it and and it's it's it's our hood [TS]

00:39:03   oh my god you know it's it's they like [TS]

00:39:07   leveled up in humanities or it like it's [TS]

00:39:09   about community here I got a whole new [TS]

00:39:10   world the whole experience but you know [TS]

00:39:12   you had two people who he says he was [TS]

00:39:14   taken from a family he doesn't remember [TS]

00:39:16   and they have that senior captain fast [TS]

00:39:18   was talking about how it was set for [TS]

00:39:19   reconditioning and you'll note that the [TS]

00:39:22   picture of him on the profile they bring [TS]

00:39:24   up is not the adults in the little boy [TS]

00:39:26   they stole right and and again ray was I [TS]

00:39:30   guess left by somebody who is concerned [TS]

00:39:33   about her well-being when she was only [TS]

00:39:34   six or seven years old so they both have [TS]

00:39:37   the experience of being ripped from you [TS]

00:39:39   ripped from their families they've been [TS]

00:39:41   rated they've either been raised to [TS]

00:39:42   raise themselves and very you know cars [TS]

00:39:46   Harrison isolationist environments [TS]

00:39:48   they're both very lonely people who are [TS]

00:39:49   also a little bit confused as to why [TS]

00:39:51   things are happening to them the way the [TS]

00:39:53   heart and and they survive an experience [TS]

00:39:56   together and what's more is that like [TS]

00:39:58   it's the together part that I think [TS]

00:39:59   moves the more than the survive part [TS]

00:40:01   because they have probably separately [TS]

00:40:02   survived pretty awful things and had [TS]

00:40:04   nobody to process it with but this time [TS]

00:40:06   there is somebody who not only will [TS]

00:40:09   listen to that other person cares what [TS]

00:40:11   happened to them and that's like a whole [TS]

00:40:12   new experience for them to and it just [TS]

00:40:14   gave me like a lump in my throat you [TS]

00:40:15   know what one and not only that but ten [TS]

00:40:18   tell me if I'm mistaken when when they [TS]

00:40:21   first meet and they're you know they're [TS]

00:40:22   running they're being chased any and he [TS]

00:40:24   keeps grabbing your hand here dad got in [TS]

00:40:26   my hand isn't is that the only time that [TS]

00:40:30   anyone sort of makes a very [TS]

00:40:32   stereotypical your girl come on [TS]

00:40:35   I i think that [TS]

00:40:36   the only time in the whole movie and and [TS]

00:40:38   what's really great about that whole [TS]

00:40:39   sequence is that it starts off with [TS]

00:40:41   their they are kind of formal the area i [TS]

00:40:43   mean they had know each other at that [TS]

00:40:44   moment and just through that whole [TS]

00:40:47   experience they come back around to [TS]

00:40:49   having a shared experience which they've [TS]

00:40:51   never really had with anyone before and [TS]

00:40:53   that's what culminates in the hug too [TS]

00:40:55   and I mean it's just a beautiful moment [TS]

00:40:57   so the grabbing of the hand do you think [TS]

00:40:58   that was some of the JJ Abrams all [TS]

00:41:00   thrown some levity to get people [TS]

00:41:02   invested and have them laughed through [TS]

00:41:03   the tension or do you think that was [TS]

00:41:05   honestly supposed supposed to point to [TS]

00:41:06   something where maybe Finn is kind of [TS]

00:41:09   remembering some of the social mores [TS]

00:41:12   that may have been that he may have [TS]

00:41:14   experienced before abduction and and [TS]

00:41:16   conditioning [TS]

00:41:17   I think that's both i think it is a very [TS]

00:41:19   proper traditional this is how you were [TS]

00:41:21   raised [TS]

00:41:22   you do this and complexity stormtroopers [TS]

00:41:25   being big on chivalry [TS]

00:41:26   yeah I wonder I've been wondering about [TS]

00:41:28   that too I was wondering if this was JJ [TS]

00:41:30   Abrams sending up the action convention [TS]

00:41:33   or if this was at work because you know [TS]

00:41:36   it's not like they're there are things [TS]

00:41:37   he does that seem anachronistic or see [TS]

00:41:40   mostly to be done to you know connect [TS]

00:41:42   audiences and make them feel like was a [TS]

00:41:43   reverent um as opposed to stuff that [TS]

00:41:46   might be in there deliberately to try to [TS]

00:41:48   set to try to lay down clues or sending [TS]

00:41:50   messages and with the hand-holding thing [TS]

00:41:52   i'm honestly not sure because again [TS]

00:41:54   JJ Abrams does sometimes do stuff that's [TS]

00:41:56   meant just to win audiences over like [TS]

00:42:00   James Kirk of the song sabotage its kind [TS]

00:42:02   of necklace of some young man today [TS]

00:42:03   driving his car around to like a 1920s [TS]

00:42:06   bootleg tune I got the impression that [TS]

00:42:08   he would be doing that same sort of [TS]

00:42:10   thing I mean possibly even if it was a [TS]

00:42:12   guy that it that's just his his reaction [TS]

00:42:15   especially you know Keith he was a [TS]

00:42:17   stormtrooper his first battle he sees [TS]

00:42:19   one of his friends died you know [TS]

00:42:20   thank goodness for us that he does so we [TS]

00:42:22   can recognize him cause he's completed [TS]

00:42:24   his mask and then the the first person [TS]

00:42:28   that that he it connects to in any way [TS]

00:42:31   is actually po Dameron and then they [TS]

00:42:33   escaped together so that's his first [TS]

00:42:34   experience of working together with [TS]

00:42:36   someone and having that that [TS]

00:42:37   togetherness experience which is Lisa [TS]

00:42:39   said that's a really important and [TS]

00:42:40   powerful thing and then hold eyes which [TS]

00:42:43   had to have been such a huge blow to him [TS]

00:42:45   that I think you know that his his [TS]

00:42:48   natural reaction after [TS]

00:42:49   that fact is if he sees you know maybe [TS]

00:42:52   somebody that he is has any kind of [TS]

00:42:54   connection with you know even though [TS]

00:42:55   he's only said a few words to her they [TS]

00:42:57   they are now somewhat connected [TS]

00:42:58   something scary at all [TS]

00:43:00   he grabs your hand and he runs when in [TS]

00:43:03   the end the stormtroopers are big on [TS]

00:43:04   chivalry but they are big on proper [TS]

00:43:07   orders and this is the purple violet [TS]

00:43:11   printed that can talk this is the proper [TS]

00:43:15   thing to do in this moment and you do [TS]

00:43:17   this right it's not it's not your choice [TS]

00:43:20   you do this because this is what you're [TS]

00:43:22   supposed to do and that's I mean that's [TS]

00:43:24   how I was trained chivalrously right you [TS]

00:43:28   know you hold the door for ladies you do [TS]

00:43:30   this you do that did you don't question [TS]

00:43:33   it right and so I did that [TS]

00:43:36   it struck me as it was combination of [TS]

00:43:37   both of those things from the other side [TS]

00:43:39   it's interesting too that you know ray [TS]

00:43:41   keep saying stop taking my hand I can [TS]

00:43:43   run without you taking my hand which i [TS]

00:43:45   would expect from somebody who has his [TS]

00:43:46   load on her own for so long [TS]

00:43:48   which to me makes the the hug scene [TS]

00:43:50   after they survive even more touching [TS]

00:43:53   because she's been you know sort of like [TS]

00:43:54   you know not wanting the physical [TS]

00:43:56   contact and now she's just so [TS]

00:43:57   overwhelmed with with the happy feels [TS]

00:43:59   that she's good with a hug [TS]

00:44:01   hmm oh yeah it's it's certainly more [TS]

00:44:05   subtle emotional development that we've [TS]

00:44:06   gotten into the others i think the other [TS]

00:44:08   installments and I say this is somebody [TS]

00:44:10   who loves movies four through six [TS]

00:44:13   episodes four through six and would be [TS]

00:44:15   really willing to revisit episodes 1-3 [TS]

00:44:17   so I i revisited 13 when the kids were a [TS]

00:44:22   couple years younger and been revisited [TS]

00:44:25   them several times and then I finally [TS]

00:44:28   snapped and played them the incomparable [TS]

00:44:30   episodes about the first the the one two [TS]

00:44:32   and three and now we've heard Steve [TS]

00:44:36   let's say go wash your droid more than [TS]

00:44:38   we've actually seen the prequels now so [TS]

00:44:41   nature and nurture i purposely did not [TS]

00:44:45   listen to the in comfortable episode [TS]

00:44:47   about episode 1 because I just don't [TS]

00:44:49   want to hear at you don't they know [TS]

00:44:50   their problems with that movie but I [TS]

00:44:52   don't like you but you don't want to [TS]

00:44:54   know you don't have to go to ebay i'm [TS]

00:44:57   happy to listen to rip apart 2 and 3 i'm [TS]

00:44:59   good with that haha [TS]

00:45:01   special means if we're gonna talk about [TS]

00:45:05   things that bothered us about the movie [TS]

00:45:06   one of the things that bothered me was [TS]

00:45:08   and they they just like anyone they met [TS]

00:45:12   they were like oh yeah this droid has [TS]

00:45:14   has the map to Luke that was like that [TS]

00:45:18   but the bumpers are you already headed [TS]

00:45:23   in everything [TS]

00:45:24   wait did he hide something in all the [TS]

00:45:26   droids dude you know and it starts when [TS]

00:45:30   it starts with poe you know and it's a [TS]

00:45:32   very blatant think it's an orange and [TS]

00:45:34   white droid completely unique and you [TS]

00:45:36   know like it starts with with po telling [TS]

00:45:38   thin and then fingers to the planet he's [TS]

00:45:40   like oh yeah [TS]

00:45:42   plantilla and it's just like everyone [TS]

00:45:43   they meet and I'm like it's just like [TS]

00:45:45   Rubik's droids okay do not know how to [TS]

00:45:48   keep secret service feel people out like [TS]

00:45:52   did make me laugh every time but it made [TS]

00:45:55   sense to me that pole would tell Finn [TS]

00:45:57   because he's trying to convince him [TS]

00:45:58   listen this is something that we really [TS]

00:46:00   need to do it is that important you know [TS]

00:46:02   this is the this is where we're going [TS]

00:46:04   and then I i don't know why i fain would [TS]

00:46:06   have any like it he wouldn't have any [TS]

00:46:09   reason to keep stuff like that a secret [TS]

00:46:11   so much like he doesn't care that much [TS]

00:46:13   he just he's running away [TS]

00:46:15   ok doesn't necessarily he's never lived [TS]

00:46:17   in this rebellion world he's always been [TS]

00:46:19   given orders and just marched to them so [TS]

00:46:22   he might not have a filter for that kind [TS]

00:46:24   of for that kind of information and then [TS]

00:46:26   the next time that we get somebody tell [TS]

00:46:27   told about it it's han Solo and chewy [TS]

00:46:29   which you know that makes sense to it's [TS]

00:46:32   still it's still funny every single time [TS]

00:46:34   somebody's like yeah [TS]

00:46:35   map to Luke Skywalker like come on guys [TS]

00:46:37   how do you really know these people are [TS]

00:46:39   who they say they are like I just I [TS]

00:46:40   don't know like I was raised to be more [TS]

00:46:43   suspicious so here's something where I [TS]

00:46:45   didn't know everybody yeah that's all [TS]

00:46:47   true that there is there is there is [TS]

00:46:50   that were you just like you [TS]

00:46:52   no wonder you are always getting blown [TS]

00:46:54   up everything [TS]

00:46:58   um my complaint and I feel odd making it [TS]

00:47:02   I honestly expected poder run to die and [TS]

00:47:06   like that in my opinion it would have [TS]

00:47:08   been perfect if he had died in that tie [TS]

00:47:11   fighter crashed and i think he was [TS]

00:47:12   originally supposed yeah and that would [TS]

00:47:14   the perfect MacGuffin where you're like [TS]

00:47:15   oh it's the handsome leading man type [TS]

00:47:18   and he's roguish and makes friends with [TS]

00:47:19   the storm trooper who rescued him and [TS]

00:47:21   they have a caper together and oh it's [TS]

00:47:23   over because i'm kind of a sucker for [TS]

00:47:26   that sort of sort of like one of my [TS]

00:47:28   favorite comic book starts off on black [TS]

00:47:30   orchid by Neil Gaiman starts off with [TS]

00:47:31   that kind of swerve and so when Pope [TS]

00:47:36   someone pode a man came back hello back [TS]

00:47:38   and I thought oh my god you could lesli [TS]

00:47:39   you and that's you still got that swerve [TS]

00:47:43   like for a good chunk of the movie i [TS]

00:47:45   really did think he was dead and there [TS]

00:47:47   was a time I would've liked it if you'd [TS]

00:47:48   stayed and I mean not because and this [TS]

00:47:50   is nothing in Oscar Isaac who I may [TS]

00:47:52   emphasize is his own special effect [TS]

00:47:54   that's how funny looks [TS]

00:47:55   I noticed such things to note that I [TS]

00:48:01   would you know but why not you can't [TS]

00:48:03   amazing hug at the end yeah in here like [TS]

00:48:07   others which are you able to ship go and [TS]

00:48:09   fen if yeah we're at here's my nasty [TS]

00:48:12   suspicious mind at work though is it's [TS]

00:48:14   awfully convenient now he's alive in [TS]

00:48:16   background like what if you working with [TS]

00:48:18   some way you know because it's the [TS]

00:48:20   Empire and for all we know like there [TS]

00:48:22   were a lot of Weasley's maybe there's a [TS]

00:48:23   bunch of weekly generals in different [TS]

00:48:25   parts of the of the Empire and they have [TS]

00:48:27   wheels spinning within wheels and was [TS]

00:48:29   like I'll have a couple moles in the [TS]

00:48:30   resistance and this programmer and guy [TS]

00:48:31   who's a really great fighter pilot he [TS]

00:48:33   just happens to be good enough to get [TS]

00:48:34   into scrapes and maybe he's playing a [TS]

00:48:36   long con he's like some variation on the [TS]

00:48:39   inside type thing so I'm like a little [TS]

00:48:41   suspicious [TS]

00:48:42   he's pretty shady then if he does that [TS]

00:48:44   because I mean he had he blows up their [TS]

00:48:46   planet killer so if he's if he is a mole [TS]

00:48:48   he is he's in the deepest of deep cover [TS]

00:48:50   yeah I'm pretty I i would not be [TS]

00:48:52   surprised i like against wheels within [TS]

00:48:54   wheels [TS]

00:48:55   um I i want to be po'd amarin you you [TS]

00:48:57   don't say that about perfect [TS]

00:48:59   oh yeah [TS]

00:49:00   you have higher factions like we don't [TS]

00:49:02   like that all of our resources are being [TS]

00:49:04   dictated by some jawless hologram madman [TS]

00:49:06   and his luscious maine daca light so let [TS]

00:49:10   you know my revolution from within block [TS]

00:49:13   a few planets to finally cast aspersions [TS]

00:49:16   on this this Death Star strategy we keep [TS]

00:49:18   trying you know to be fair it may be [TS]

00:49:23   like that worried him caucus of the [TS]

00:49:24   entire you know [TS]

00:49:25   oh no I i really liked podium and he [TS]

00:49:30   swashbuckling he's like he's great I [TS]

00:49:32   just feel like he was granted back into [TS]

00:49:34   the plot like I would have liked to stay [TS]

00:49:35   down for that reason well well and I and [TS]

00:49:37   I and I think bb-8 is frankly the cap [TS]

00:49:39   from inside llewyn davis but the thing [TS]

00:49:45   is that it was a I mean I figured he [TS]

00:49:49   would come back because that's a very [TS]

00:49:50   classic cliffhanger switch you know it's [TS]

00:49:53   like all these dead [TS]

00:49:54   no he's not there's no way he could have [TS]

00:49:56   gotten out yeah he got out of class [TS]

00:49:58   second you know it's like all right [TS]

00:50:00   that's that's fair enough that's in the [TS]

00:50:01   that's in the DNA of Star Wars but if [TS]

00:50:05   they were going to do that it's it's too [TS]

00:50:07   convenient for him to just suddenly [TS]

00:50:08   appear you know if there had just been [TS]

00:50:11   one hint Finn doesn't need to know it [TS]

00:50:14   Finn can still think he's dead but we [TS]

00:50:16   need to have just one little tiny [TS]

00:50:19   establishing you know a footprint [TS]

00:50:21   walking away from the crash or or just [TS]

00:50:23   something i don't know what you have [TS]

00:50:25   been missing to ruin the host of the [TS]

00:50:27   whole swerve as Lisa put it I'm glad [TS]

00:50:28   that I didn't know I wouldn't i wouldn't [TS]

00:50:30   have wanted a clue to that because then [TS]

00:50:31   I wouldn't have had that delightful [TS]

00:50:32   surprise at the end where you see that [TS]

00:50:34   getting that wasn't then they didn't do [TS]

00:50:36   it for me this this word for me is is [TS]

00:50:38   for Finn right Finn is the one who gets [TS]

00:50:41   surprised by it and then and his his [TS]

00:50:44   sadness and then his joy at the end [TS]

00:50:47   that's what makes it for me it's not [TS]

00:50:49   it's not the plot machinations of all he [TS]

00:50:52   survived it was because they did work on [TS]

00:50:55   me and I think it probably worked a lot [TS]

00:50:56   of kids insured yeah I'm sure did it was [TS]

00:51:00   kinda like the in the man from uncle [TS]

00:51:01   movie this summer where they they would [TS]

00:51:03   like intentionally leave out details and [TS]

00:51:06   then they would go back and show you the [TS]

00:51:08   details they left and said see aren't we [TS]

00:51:10   so clever like no you're just scared [TS]

00:51:13   with us that's no that's not ok so it [TS]

00:51:16   rubbed me that way it was like uh huh [TS]

00:51:18   you know and like I said it doesn't have [TS]

00:51:21   to be a big thing it could be something [TS]

00:51:23   that we might miss but it should be just [TS]

00:51:25   like in the corner of the screen [TS]

00:51:26   somewhere so you go [TS]

00:51:27   ah he did survive it is okay it is he [TS]

00:51:30   didn't just miraculously show up alive [TS]

00:51:33   later but but Finn was thrown out so far [TS]

00:51:36   away like if you look right wreckage my [TS]

00:51:39   baby knit one even had a footprint that [TS]

00:51:42   wouldn't I was scared but if if in the [TS]

00:51:44   distance you say yet but yeah and if in [TS]

00:51:47   the distance you see like the trail of a [TS]

00:51:50   parachute lying over the top of the dune [TS]

00:51:52   that's where he landed we fin mrs. that [TS]

00:51:55   entirely and he's walking something like [TS]

00:51:57   that you know and yes i love the jacket [TS]

00:52:00   i want the jacket [TS]

00:52:01   oh god you have to know if anyone wants [TS]

00:52:02   to buy me the jacket i was coming i want [TS]

00:52:05   that jacket to that check is amazing [TS]

00:52:08   oh no wonder if in like that I know [TS]

00:52:11   ok so speaking of costumes i think what [TS]

00:52:13   i really like and appreciate about this [TS]

00:52:15   there's no metal bikini is anywhere in [TS]

00:52:17   sight and you know raise race stuff is [TS]

00:52:21   mostly functional when you think about [TS]

00:52:23   it I mean there's a little bit of the [TS]

00:52:25   whole cold shoulder off guard [TS]

00:52:27   you know business top of the arms going [TS]

00:52:29   on but I like that hurt her clothing is [TS]

00:52:32   clearly functional um I like that is [TS]

00:52:34   really change much that she's in pants [TS]

00:52:36   the whole time I like that lady is [TS]

00:52:38   actually in pants for much of this to [TS]

00:52:39   actually the little girl I can't tell [TS]

00:52:41   you how excited I was to see in return [TS]

00:52:43   of the jedi that she was like wearing [TS]

00:52:44   pants and jumpsuits everything was [TS]

00:52:45   completely practical because you know I [TS]

00:52:48   was like oh my gosh at last I think it [TS]

00:52:51   was to balance the middle bikini in the [TS]

00:52:53   first quarter [TS]

00:52:54   oh no thats that returning to that I was [TS]

00:52:58   just an uneven and I mean it worked on [TS]

00:53:01   me as a as a boy just hitting the right [TS]

00:53:04   spot and even at that point I was like [TS]

00:53:06   yeah that's too much [TS]

00:53:08   that's no no [TS]

00:53:11   alright so we're at about an hour let's [TS]

00:53:14   and let's do some closing closing [TS]

00:53:16   thoughts happy thoughts let's end on a [TS]

00:53:18   high note so and then will will will [TS]

00:53:22   unfortunately call it good but America [TS]

00:53:24   let's start with you [TS]

00:53:26   well first of all I did bring up a [TS]

00:53:27   picture of kylo Ren so now I know what [TS]

00:53:29   he's talking about with this hair and um [TS]

00:53:33   I don't know that I would call that [TS]

00:53:34   lusciously condition it looks greasy to [TS]

00:53:36   me which makes sense because you know [TS]

00:53:38   he's been wearing a helmet all the time [TS]

00:53:40   so of course his hair is going to be [TS]

00:53:41   greasy I would keep my hands away from [TS]

00:53:42   that as far as not that any fair picture [TS]

00:53:44   you totally have to see this movie there [TS]

00:53:46   is its own special effect of the movie [TS]

00:53:47   I'm serious [TS]

00:53:48   look it's giving me the kind of like [TS]

00:53:50   creeping will use a little bit there no [TS]

00:53:52   and nobody like the first time when he [TS]

00:53:53   takes off his helmet and and you know [TS]

00:53:56   what it's like it's awfully hard to [TS]

00:53:57   block has how many he takes it off and [TS]

00:54:00   the hair comes out I was like maybe the [TS]

00:54:02   dark side of the force keeps you the [TS]

00:54:05   ability to withstand helmet hair and [TS]

00:54:07   that is compelling as the most [TS]

00:54:10   compelling argument that can feel for [TS]

00:54:11   the parts that I i will say my my only [TS]

00:54:15   issue with kylo Ren I mean I have a [TS]

00:54:19   natural that the riffing is strong in [TS]

00:54:22   this one and and so there were too many [TS]

00:54:26   moments where like you know he takes is [TS]

00:54:28   this thing off and I go hey its Vinny [TS]

00:54:29   Barbarino um aurorae CMS his character [TS]

00:54:33   from girls which is not what you want to [TS]

00:54:34   be seeing when you're watching this [TS]

00:54:36   I've never been girl so I I can i yeah [TS]

00:54:39   duh [TS]

00:54:40   mhm no but but at the very end you know [TS]

00:54:44   the the lightsaber duel which was really [TS]

00:54:47   well done and I've said this online [TS]

00:54:49   before my my feet are partners a fight [TS]

00:54:51   director and and has taught me what to [TS]

00:54:54   look for so I appreciate really good [TS]

00:54:56   fight choreography right and i'm [TS]

00:54:58   watching this and this is you know [TS]

00:55:00   really good stuff and and at the same [TS]

00:55:02   time I'm seeing the Black Knight from [TS]

00:55:05   monty python and the holy grail and so [TS]

00:55:07   every few seconds and I'm tis but a [TS]

00:55:09   flesh wound [TS]

00:55:10   no I'm like oh just put just a little [TS]

00:55:13   bit of color in his costume you wouldn't [TS]

00:55:15   have that but I'm like oh god no so i [TS]

00:55:18   kept getting ripped out of them [TS]

00:55:19   the moment by little things like that i [TS]

00:55:22   mean the fight scene is beautiful in its [TS]

00:55:23   it's kino it sort of has a real curse [TS]

00:55:26   our feeling to it which is again [TS]

00:55:28   absolutely right most of that's me [TS]

00:55:32   teacher let me be your teacher [TS]

00:55:34   yeah they're said and it's not because [TS]

00:55:36   he and it's against that hold desperate [TS]

00:55:39   need for human connection you realize my [TS]

00:55:41   god he is as lonely as Finn and as ray r [TS]

00:55:44   and this is the way he's chosen to [TS]

00:55:46   handle it instead [TS]

00:55:47   well I'm and again to go back to star [TS]

00:55:50   trek for a second is everything goes [TS]

00:55:52   back to star trek yeah it he reminded me [TS]

00:55:55   of Charlie ex who was the the little boy [TS]

00:55:58   who is raised by the aliens when his is [TS]

00:56:01   his ship was marooned somewhere and all [TS]

00:56:04   the adults died and the the all-powerful [TS]

00:56:06   beings saved him and and and he ends up [TS]

00:56:10   having to go back with them he did they [TS]

00:56:11   take him away from the enterprise at the [TS]

00:56:13   end of the episode spoiler horn and it [TS]

00:56:17   reminded me of that because if if his [TS]

00:56:19   biggest connection to anyone right now [TS]

00:56:22   is is smoke i mean that's that's no way [TS]

00:56:25   to live [TS]

00:56:26   that's that's perhaps even worse than [TS]

00:56:28   being isolated on a desert planet living [TS]

00:56:30   on a hat [TS]

00:56:31   ya know so again it's that desperate [TS]

00:56:33   need for connection that was Vader's [TS]

00:56:35   issue to write like he had the Emperor [TS]

00:56:38   and people here for our joke [TS]

00:56:40   yeah yeah not know enough to not what [TS]

00:56:43   you'd call a fun holiday list know it [TS]

00:56:46   take to get back to bite my happy thing [TS]

00:56:48   to end on though it is it is a member [TS]

00:56:51   you bring it back up here you guys I'm [TS]

00:56:53   not gonna let you rest it down is that [TS]

00:56:56   was my excitement over the character of [TS]

00:56:58   thin because he's just he's kind of this [TS]

00:57:00   wild card that we haven't really seen [TS]

00:57:02   that kind of a character type in star [TS]

00:57:05   wars before and you know he's it [TS]

00:57:08   he's it its it's self-interest but it's [TS]

00:57:11   it's nice self-interest like he mostly [TS]

00:57:13   wants to run away until the end when he [TS]

00:57:15   he goes back in and helps out but but i [TS]

00:57:18   love the idea that i have absolutely no [TS]

00:57:20   idea what his character arc is going to [TS]

00:57:23   be where he's going to go in [TS]

00:57:24   next movie he ends up unconscious and we [TS]

00:57:27   have that many lovely scene of Ray [TS]

00:57:29   kissing him on the forehead before she [TS]

00:57:31   leaves and I just am thrilled to death [TS]

00:57:33   with the idea that i don't know what [TS]

00:57:35   he's going to do in the next movie [TS]

00:57:36   that's great [TS]

00:57:38   see that's that's the thing I loved all [TS]

00:57:41   of the new characters were not analogues [TS]

00:57:44   of the old ones they had their own [TS]

00:57:46   twists their own interests they were all [TS]

00:57:49   really well-crafted they were really [TS]

00:57:51   well cast and-and-and exactly i don't [TS]

00:57:55   know where that's going I don't know [TS]

00:57:57   where she's going to wind up i don't [TS]

00:57:59   know what's going on with po and and and [TS]

00:58:01   all that i want to i walked out of the [TS]

00:58:04   the theater saying all right i want the [TS]

00:58:05   next one now I've and watched all the [TS]

00:58:07   rest of them this week where is the next [TS]

00:58:09   one [TS]

00:58:10   some of the criticism that I've heard [TS]

00:58:11   about the pipe then 10 is that he didn't [TS]

00:58:15   receive a lot of character development [TS]

00:58:16   and I think that's a good thing because [TS]

00:58:18   throughout the movie he was reacting it [TS]

00:58:21   wasn't about like oh that let them grow [TS]

00:58:24   as a person it was like no friends in [TS]

00:58:26   this really crappy situation he's in [TS]

00:58:28   fight-or-flight mode [TS]

00:58:29   yeah like that's it there's no room for [TS]

00:58:31   character development he's still [TS]

00:58:33   developing his character he's been [TS]

00:58:35   indoctrinated into the cult of [TS]

00:58:36   Stormtroopers the whole time he hasn't [TS]

00:58:38   had any other experience usually having [TS]

00:58:41   to train as we watch [TS]

00:58:43   yeah I think that's what's great about [TS]

00:58:45   him is you know he spends only he's [TS]

00:58:47   basically a puppy and he spends the [TS]

00:58:50   whole movie just just kind of you know [TS]

00:58:51   huge paws flailing everywhere you know [TS]

00:58:55   running in circles trying to figure out [TS]

00:58:56   what's what'n and he finally focus he [TS]

00:58:59   finally focuses on this one person who's [TS]

00:59:01   offered him the idea of what life could [TS]

00:59:04   be like if you're not living in constant [TS]

00:59:06   terror highly regimented constant terror [TS]

00:59:09   and and have some semblance of human [TS]

00:59:10   connection and so when something of [TS]

00:59:12   course happens to her you know he i have [TS]

00:59:15   to go rescue her and then all of a [TS]

00:59:16   sudden everyone else like and we will [TS]

00:59:18   help you and it's such a it's a foreign [TS]

00:59:20   experience but it's one he's really open [TS]

00:59:22   to and that's what I love about fit as a [TS]

00:59:25   character is he is radically open like [TS]

00:59:28   in a way that you don't see a lot of [TS]

00:59:30   characters in these kind of saugus [TS]

00:59:32   typically because most the time like the [TS]

00:59:35   typical exchanges personne [TS]

00:59:38   cultural convention cultural convention [TS]

00:59:39   skill skill quest person B react react [TS]

00:59:43   tourism and Salter or quip gradually [TS]

00:59:45   coming around to your way of thinking [TS]

00:59:46   but you rarely see it were the first [TS]

00:59:48   person you know conveys information the [TS]

00:59:50   second person like abhorrent or I can be [TS]

00:59:53   useful or something like that and I just [TS]

00:59:55   loved how sweetly open he was [TS]

00:59:55   loved how sweetly open he was [TS]

01:00:00   it was it was it was wonderful you know [TS]

01:00:02   if there's there's there wasn't a whole [TS]

01:00:04   lot of distancing cynicism or irony and [TS]

01:00:06   i was actually a little bit worried [TS]

01:00:08   about that since it's infested the star [TS]

01:00:10   trek ethos as it were and it's one of [TS]

01:00:13   the defining hallmarks of the Marvel [TS]

01:00:15   movies at this point so I liked that [TS]

01:00:18   this movie is it goes back to this this [TS]

01:00:20   people act on genuine motives and [TS]

01:00:24   emotions are things that you take [TS]

01:00:25   seriously and you know you honor the way [TS]

01:00:27   to have them to act on them and finn [TS]

01:00:29   just completely bodies that I loved it [TS]

01:00:31   and a beautiful thing with his character [TS]

01:00:33   all throughout everything he starts out [TS]

01:00:37   in in in a in just constant terror and [TS]

01:00:40   fear and all he wants to do is run and [TS]

01:00:42   get away and he keeps getting thrown [TS]

01:00:45   into situations where he has no choice [TS]

01:00:47   but to keep moving forward instead of [TS]

01:00:49   running and then eventually it gets to [TS]

01:00:52   where he makes the choice to go and help [TS]

01:00:55   and then he makes the choice to fight [TS]

01:00:57   ran at the end with the lightsaber which [TS]

01:01:00   has not been trained in and he's got a [TS]

01:01:02   Jedi is ready hold it like a baseball [TS]

01:01:03   bat is a stereo yeah yeah but the things [TS]

01:01:07   he tries to rise to the occasion like [TS]

01:01:09   every time he's presented with a hard [TS]

01:01:11   choice he he's terrified but he does it [TS]

01:01:14   like like thatthat battle is formatted [TS]

01:01:16   forum and and some of them i mean [TS]

01:01:18   they're not he doesn't even really have [TS]

01:01:19   a choice right [TS]

01:01:21   he doesn't have a choice when he's in [TS]

01:01:22   the TIE fighter because he can't fly it [TS]

01:01:23   he doesn't have a choice when he [TS]

01:01:24   stranded on the desert planet in the [TS]

01:01:26   crash tie fighter right and but then you [TS]

01:01:29   know he has the choice at mazza's to to [TS]

01:01:32   turn and run here to stay and and he [TS]

01:01:35   does stay but it still was still he had [TS]

01:01:37   to overcome that and and by the end it [TS]

01:01:40   is it's not even a choice it's it's I'm [TS]

01:01:43   going to do this because this is the [TS]

01:01:45   right thing to do and he says that at [TS]

01:01:46   one point it's like I'm doing this [TS]

01:01:47   because it's the good thing to do it's [TS]

01:01:50   the right thing which i think is a [TS]

01:01:51   lovely it's it's a really important [TS]

01:01:54   thing that a lot of movies and and [TS]

01:01:57   especially hero movies have been letting [TS]

01:01:59   me down on the the idea that you can be [TS]

01:02:02   a good person because you are inherently [TS]

01:02:04   good that's ok too right yeah at Lisa [TS]

01:02:10   what's your point my have honestly [TS]

01:02:13   it was finding out who kylo Ren's dad [TS]

01:02:15   was I was well I was oh I'm so excited [TS]

01:02:20   about him as a villain [TS]

01:02:21   I'm just beyond excited because we're [TS]

01:02:26   going to get to see I is we're [TS]

01:02:29   completely invested in whether or not [TS]

01:02:30   this guy can be redeemed and i love that [TS]

01:02:34   like that's gonna be the thing that [TS]

01:02:35   happens it because the question is set [TS]

01:02:36   up in this movie like his because his [TS]

01:02:39   mom I still believe there's some light [TS]

01:02:40   in him and and you know when she and [TS]

01:02:42   Hansel have that we need to talk about [TS]

01:02:43   kevin moment with their son Carlo and I [TS]

01:02:47   still believe there's some Lightning him [TS]

01:02:48   and so go die you die to save him [TS]

01:02:52   well I don't think she sent him up to do [TS]

01:02:54   that although it does neatly solve the [TS]

01:02:55   whole i made a baby with a scoundrel [TS]

01:02:57   issue [TS]

01:02:58   I'm but you know it's it's interesting [TS]

01:03:05   to me that somebody who largely who grew [TS]

01:03:07   up with a surrogate family that got [TS]

01:03:09   blown up by dot star had so much faith [TS]

01:03:12   in a father-son relationship when she [TS]

01:03:15   kind of had a front-row seat to how [TS]

01:03:16   mentor-mentee skirt out but like this [TS]

01:03:20   whole movie you've liked you find out [TS]

01:03:22   that Kyle is not completely committed to [TS]

01:03:24   the dark side and that whole scene study [TS]

01:03:26   has like I'm really torn and I need your [TS]

01:03:29   help and I thought oh god that here's [TS]

01:03:31   the here's the sort of here comes [TS]

01:03:32   because he doesn't want to kill his dad [TS]

01:03:34   but he wants his dad to give permission [TS]

01:03:35   do it no but because we see him [TS]

01:03:40   struggling and we see he's lonely and [TS]

01:03:42   because he's tied two characters that we [TS]

01:03:44   know unlike and Luke blames himself for [TS]

01:03:46   kylo like we have a stake in kylo Ren's [TS]

01:03:49   Redemption because we want this guy to [TS]

01:03:51   come over to the light side of the force [TS]

01:03:53   we want Luke to be redeemed since his [TS]

01:03:55   Jedi experiment is thus far as something [TS]

01:03:57   of a failure I'm so we want Luke to have [TS]

01:04:00   the same kind of redemption and [TS]

01:04:01   gratification that Ben Kenobi got in [TS]

01:04:03   movies 4 through 6 [TS]

01:04:05   it's it's just so like they've made an [TS]

01:04:09   interesting precisely because he isn't [TS]

01:04:12   he isn't a one-dimensional battery like [TS]

01:04:15   Palpatine was and the problem that we [TS]

01:04:18   had not the problem the thing about [TS]

01:04:20   movies 436 was you had already seen [TS]

01:04:22   Darth Vader after the battles clinical [TS]

01:04:24   lost and [TS]

01:04:25   like the redemption was kind of a sort [TS]

01:04:26   of his character there but you have to [TS]

01:04:27   admit for like one and seven eighths of [TS]

01:04:30   a movie he's like the most terrifying [TS]

01:04:31   thing going and then all of a sudden he [TS]

01:04:33   does that I'm your father's work and he [TS]

01:04:34   becomes that the like oh my god and you [TS]

01:04:38   know that the the last movie whatever [TS]

01:04:41   but I'm like this one like you're [TS]

01:04:44   getting those in origin stories it was [TS]

01:04:46   and so the big question is is he really [TS]

01:04:48   gonna go with the jobless wonder that he [TS]

01:04:51   talks to or is there hope for him to [TS]

01:04:54   generally come over and if he comes back [TS]

01:04:56   to the light side [TS]

01:04:57   what is the sacrifice what's the price [TS]

01:04:58   that has to be paid um so for me kylo [TS]

01:05:02   Ren kind of as a high note because it's [TS]

01:05:04   a complex villain in a way that we [TS]

01:05:06   haven't seen before and it's a villain [TS]

01:05:08   who has very personal ties to people we [TS]

01:05:10   already care about and who has crafted [TS]

01:05:13   personal ties to people we have come to [TS]

01:05:16   care about like Ray and fit because he [TS]

01:05:19   had awfully nasty normally person within [TS]

01:05:21   and like I gotta be honest I'm a little [TS]

01:05:25   worried for Finn in the next two [TS]

01:05:26   installments because captain fastball [TS]

01:05:28   went to the compactor and when she gets [TS]

01:05:30   out of it because you don't cast when [TS]

01:05:32   Christy and throw after like three seems [TS]

01:05:33   completely 1000 gets up she's gonna want [TS]

01:05:36   sum of around back and like the fact [TS]

01:05:39   that it and the fact that kylo Ren like [TS]

01:05:41   c-span and screams your traitor and like [TS]

01:05:43   like he really takes us personally and [TS]

01:05:45   so that's going to be thing 2 i'm just [TS]

01:05:47   really set the zoom I think with a [TS]

01:05:49   villain that is worthy of the saga and i [TS]

01:05:51   love it [TS]

01:05:52   no see I am I kind of took that scene [TS]

01:05:55   the other way I didn't see him [TS]

01:05:56   struggling I saw him luring hands-on in [TS]

01:06:00   town and playing playing on you know [TS]

01:06:03   playing it being innocent help me [TS]

01:06:06   uh-oh me know because I struggle because [TS]

01:06:08   he was monster the force earlier and the [TS]

01:06:10   fact that he monologues to his grandpa's [TS]

01:06:12   helmet and and all that and when he has [TS]

01:06:16   that throw line 22 terrain where he's [TS]

01:06:17   like--he'll only disappoint you [TS]

01:06:19   um like it's easy to hate your parents [TS]

01:06:22   when they're out of the room and you're [TS]

01:06:23   an angry teenager but when your parents [TS]

01:06:25   are driving you to hockey practice [TS]

01:06:27   it's kind of hard to roll your eyes and [TS]

01:06:29   so like when he's confronted with his [TS]

01:06:31   dad and realizes that that solo has put [TS]

01:06:34   his life on the line for love him [TS]

01:06:36   it hits that party in the king [TS]

01:06:38   commit to the dark side and what's worse [TS]

01:06:40   it becomes made aware that part and he's [TS]

01:06:42   already sensitive about the fact he [TS]

01:06:43   can't use the force on the rain she can [TS]

01:06:45   use it on other people so he's already [TS]

01:06:47   insecure he's already angry and we all [TS]

01:06:50   know from previous installments like [TS]

01:06:52   that does not make for good for this [TS]

01:06:54   building so no and that will see ya and [TS]

01:06:57   then again when you jump to the the [TS]

01:06:58   thing with ray when he when he battles [TS]

01:07:00   with her and he screams you need a [TS]

01:07:01   teacher let me be your teacher like it's [TS]

01:07:04   not because he cares about how expertly [TS]

01:07:05   the forces wield it's because he's so [TS]

01:07:07   desperate to have a pier and he's lonely [TS]

01:07:10   and he's desperate and he wants someone [TS]

01:07:11   to connect when he wants to create a [TS]

01:07:13   family of some sort [TS]

01:07:14   you know having just killed part of his [TS]

01:07:16   own but yeah I think he's a great [TS]

01:07:19   villain III it's complex and interesting [TS]

01:07:21   and and not boring and that's kind of [TS]

01:07:24   what i want for my villains David what [TS]

01:07:26   about your high points for high point my [TS]

01:07:28   my high point is just the the characters [TS]

01:07:31   themselves and the fact that i want to [TS]

01:07:34   know more about them and I want to know [TS]

01:07:36   I want to see more adventures with them [TS]

01:07:38   right this second and you know that I [TS]

01:07:41   haven't felt that about star wars in [TS]

01:07:43   forever you know decades decades [TS]

01:07:47   yeah for me it was definitely that [TS]

01:07:49   feeling walking walking out of the [TS]

01:07:52   theater and getting home and still being [TS]

01:07:54   excited and still like yes this is [TS]

01:07:57   amazing this was Star Wars this felt [TS]

01:07:59   like Star Wars I can see myself in the [TS]

01:08:02   characters you know that that feeling I [TS]

01:08:04   carried with me for a couple of days did [TS]
