The Talk Show

17: The iPhone 5 , with MG Siegler

  I'm a hypocrite if I if I want to

  continue to poopoo everybody who

complains about things like the new

lightning adapter and new magsafe for

the retina macbook pro but that I still

want to complain that it took me 10

minutes to get set up here because i'm

recording on the macbook air but i only

had the retina adapter here at this desk

so you had to do it you have a an

adapter for the the light media know all

i have is the one USB to lightning cable

that comes in the iphone box yet so it

actually and I even mentioned in my

review if anything I feel like it almost

gave me a better stress test of the

battery because yes so that our you make

sure the way I'm you don't have someone

with you at all points right like I'll

go downstairs and we have one in the

kitchen and if I make coffee or

something in the morning I'll just you

know I'll just put my phone in there for

five minutes and you know give it five

minutes jus sit here and there because

why not there's a cable right there

yeah I'm most concerned for my you know

work and it going to these tech

conferences because right now you don't

even think twice about it if you didn't

put the the charger in your bag there's

going to be two hundred other people who

have one right and now there will be

significantly less at least for the

  first pursuit weeks at least

so yeah and the other thing that I'm

worried about in the interim I mean and

obviously this will be a moot point

hopefully by Christmas i would think but

the fact that there's nothing like a

month yes yes I was just talking about

that today to arm i wonder how quick i

don't think anyone's talk to them that

there would be a good story to see how

quickly they'll all come out with their

thing they had to have obviously been at

the kind of listening to the rumors and

knowing the specs and everything and

hopefully getting something ready to go

I don't know how far along that those

some case makers you know as as we help

goin and Asia seem to go they just go

out and make it like based on

even rumored specs I didn't like play

blackjack with it they don't know if

movies a company like that because

there's a little bit more involved with

the the power angle of it so and plus

they didn't have the new dock connector

  so that's that's actually a big

undertaking for them i wonder how

quickly they can get one out

yeah I wonder and I would you know and

it's also like sort of a black box what

  Apple's relationship is with those

companies like yeah I are there any of

them that are actually in good enough

graces that maybe they got small heads

up i know ya know a lot of people at

Apple use movies just like the rest of

us too so that could be some sort of

indicator I'm surprised what do you

think about why doesn't Apple just do a

  case like that

why leave this in so many people use you

know a a case battery charger thing why

not why not move into that at all as

  add-on accessory totally optional of

course but don't you think that I i

think it's probably a perception issue

right that you have you sold one yeah it

would create the perception that the

  phone needs

yep I actually also think that's why

they've gotten away from the bumpers is

that I feel like the way that the bumper

thing turned out is that people thought

that a lot of people took it as meaning

that the phone needs a bumper or a case

of some sort right and the whole

antennagate thing which was really just

  a coincidence right

I'm convinced i I've talked to people on

and off the record at apple and I'm

convinced that the fact that the bumper

alleviated the attenuation was it's just

a coincidence they made the bumper

because they thought they could make a

lot of money selling bumpers two people

yep and that they look kind of cool and

because they thought I the aesthetically

hey everybody's buying cases for the

phones already they're going to keep

buying cases no matter what we do but we

put a lot of effort into this beautiful

glass bat right let's make one that

shows it off and show that ok we even if

you do want a case for protective

  purposes

you don't have to cover up the whole

  back of the phone

and then the antennagate thing hit and

it was all just coincidence but it

created the perception and you'll never

be able to convince the people who

believe this otherwise that Apple knew

all along right at the iphone 4 needed a

  bumper because otherwise it wouldn't

hold right and now that's probably just

you know up being blown even more out

now that affect this one doesn't have it

because you know maybe they better fix

  it this time

cool still one of my all-time favorite

moments at an apple event was the

antenna great one when they when they

took questions and I i remember me i

remember i think you're sitting kind of

close to each other yeah right ah and I

asked do you guys use the bumper and it

was jobs filler and Bob manchild Cook

  was up there wasn't he

I don't have anything that was I think

Bob Marley wasn't maybe it was jobs

  cooking mansfield definitely was

  I'm sure there's a picture somewhere we

could find yeah and they instead of

really answering i'll just reached into

their jeans and pulled them out and they

all had you know iphone 4s with no

bumper funny i can just google

interrogate that's the size of course

what it's called so let's see if I had

  been

Harper and I did regret there was

something i would have it was to close

jobs and Bob Mansfield huh yep I've my

my regret on that incident though is

that I didn't follow up with are you

worried that this free bumper program is

going to create the perception that you

need the bumper and I didn't ask that

and nobody quite ask that and I would

you know such a rare case that you

actually got to ask questions yeah at an

  event

yeah but anyway no that's why i think

apple doesn't do the battery pack thing

themselves I think they're happy to

leave that to third parties and sell

them in the store and still make some

money on yeah yeah I'm excited for for a

new movie just for when i travel you

know the little ones will hit on it a

little bit the battery with this phone

but uh I mean there's just no getting

around it even if it's a great battery

you're going to need you're traveling

you're going to need it some kind of you

know extra mophie or bring your power

cable with you right if you're far away

  from for 12 hours right

I I in in you know as the years have

gone on at least since mophie these

movie things existed i don't remember

them in the 3gs era if they if they

existed i didn't have used to have like

I think you stuck on the bottom they

definitely had one because i had not a

mophie but it was something that and I

remember because it had like a curved

back to to you know perfectly place in

the curve back of the the 3g and 3gs it

was it didn't have a top to it so it's

kind of just like a bottom thing but

  yeah definitely wasn't I i think it's it

it's one of those things that I i'm

guessing you're going to agree with me

and then it's going to make the people

who still complain that the iphone

doesn't have a replaceable battery and

you know it is half an inch thick want

to strangle us but I think it's actually

a very graceful solution to the protein

problem where day-to-day i love how thin

the iphone is i will really love how

much thinner die from five is and I get

through the day with plenty of battery

  life I mean we're recording at 725

  Eastern as

we record and I've got what I don't have

the percentage on but it looks like I've

got at least seventy percent battery

  life left

yep and then on this phone and that's

typical for me I'd i usually make it

through the day and have half a charge

left no project and on days like you

said conferences are killer and you know

like going to WTC or something like that

there's no way i could make it through

the day and i'm often you're not even

near your you know in the middle of the

  conferencing you don't have a plug-in

  area

the movie is a great solution to that

yep so you know it might go to a

conference instead of having my nice

thin iphone I've got a big fat iphone

with the case right and that's like yeah

people don't really talk about that but

that has you know it's just a different

solution you either you either have to

carry around a second battery which were

you know be smaller than a mophie but

the movie has you know the benefit of

being the case if you want to use a case

that will protect the phone a bit and

it's you know in the case of the the

last movie that I had which was kind of

a not there's a super thin one and then

there's like a state more standard

thicker one that's like a charge an

extra charge and a half so it's even

better than having a secondary battery

which would only be another one charge

right and you don't have to power your

phone down to swap it out and I don't

know every time I test one of these

other phones and I have to like a lot of

these some of the phones even come

without the battery in it and you have

to go yeah most likely uh what was the

most recent 1i have is the galaxy nexus

s and that back you know they get

probably the next to scout the Galaxy

Nexus I mean yes our galaxy nexus the

  back is awful

it's like oh I've got it right here and

just took it off and I had every time I

do it I feel like I can't believe that I

didn't just know it feels it's like

  ripping off a sturdy band-aid band-aid

that's been like solidified by something

like popping or like the kind of

band-aids they give you at a at a

  hospital

you know like that like induct industry

  industrial-strength band-aid

  yeah I can't believe I'm not breaking

off those little flimsy side hinges when

I'm taking everything apart now I think

it's a good solution but it is true

though that when they change the

yeah the form factor you're in that were

in this like limbo right now I don't

  have any extra juice

I wonder if someone will make candy if

the adapters come out first get a a

30-pin to lightning adapter and stick

that in there most control and kinda you

know balance the the iphone 5 within an

old movie just about the top on or

  something like that

yeah I don't know so i figured that and

i think the shining we can easily fill

the whole show with this there's no

reason for us to rehash our reviews of

the the iphone or iOS 6 I thought you

know I think everybody's going to read

  them

why don't we take questions we can

answer you know talk about stuff that

maybe we didn't address yep and i said i

got we have plenty of questions on

Twitter we could go through i have one

for you though and I didn't see anybody

ask it and it's one of those things that

maybe doesn't occur to people because I

didn't never really occurred to me until

i started reviewing these phones but the

first 1i got to review before it came

out was the the verizon iphone 4 and

then I got the 4s last year and that

question didn't come up with those

because they were visually identical to

the iphone 4 on AT&T that was already up

before so i could just sit there and use

it in public and nobody would ever think

about right but I wondered with this one

whether they were going to give us any

rules on where we can take it out what

we can do and they didn't really yeah

says there was more rules about what you

can but it was mostly about sharing

photos it seemed like because there

would be the the kind of the data

attached to it we're going to tell

potentially that it's a different type

of coming from a different type of

advice but yeah there were there were no

really no rules about that you know i

was obviously that you told to kind of

be careful and not show it to anyone

besides you know your significant other

family if you're living at home but ya

know and this is it makes testing a kind

of tricky for you know one day I took it

out to take a panoramic picture to try

  and test that out

I made sure to go to a secluded area you

know kind of far away where no one could

possibly tell when I was actually using

to take take the thing with and a few

times you know I just have it in my hand

in my pocket kind of be using that the

earpiece for like streaming music if I

was trying to do that i really wasn't

secretive about it i just used it

whenever I would use an iphone i didn't

try to cover up the back or anything and

nobody said anything and I think in

general it looks enough like the iphone

  4 and 4s that I I can't even imagine I

think you'd have to be really really in

  tune

yeah you have to see both you know

  someone who's watching apple news

closely and closely enough to know

exactly what this new device looks like

what's exactly different about it and I

think the back is different enough to

like for example today you know the

first day we could kind of walk around

just normally with it i was using it on

the the kind of community here and

definitely getting a bunch of looks like

but San Francisco is also a place where

you know tech-heavy crowd especially in

between where i was going to the soma

area so definitely got that was a god

but I bet that's very different than

yeah yeah it would be it would be pretty

dangerous i think to try and you know

walk around just with it out before the

before the reviews come out because I

think someone would you know figure out

  what you're doing and I do i I walk

around the city and i use it but I

really do try to be cognizant while I'm

walking and using my iphone of that

whole issue of you know somebody walking

by swiping it out of your hand and

taking all right I all I do I mean I you

know I'm sure that there's times when i

get engrossed in what I'm looking at the

where where maybe I'm susceptible to

that but I'm with this 1i was so super

paranoid depressed because I just all I

could think of is how awful that phone

call would be and i'll bet Apple would

  be really nice but

it's like that's a phone call you do not

want to make now is haha which makes it

all the more incredible that it was an

apple engineer who you know is the one

is of of someone losing it

we're at a bar yeah like there is no way

that i want to be that guy no definitely

  not

  yeah i think that i think i think i

tested the the iphone 4 so that was

  slightly different and significantly

different but people that already you

know kind of seen it because the Apple

engineer collected in the bar right yeah

and the other thing too and I mentioned

this on the show I think with molt's two

weeks ago and again I don't think I'm

spilling any secret but to my knowledge

nobody none of the people in the press

get seeded with a review unit until

  after the event

yes as far as i know is trill but but

you know like I saw Pogue coming out

before me I mean so you know I mean just

don't think there's anybody in the list

higher than pose right you know and it

just makes sense and that's what you

know we all had six days everybody who

got a review unit got it last wednesday

  after the event or later

yea though I don't know if I'm you know

just thinking about this remembering it

differently but it seems to me that you

know back in the day when maybe even the

first iphone reviews are coming out and

  stuff

there was a obviously they had a

different kind of crew some of the same

people pogin mossberg i'm sure you know

had their review units but i think that

is smaller you know crew of people

reviewing it and even they do now and I

want to say that they had it for a

longer amount of time but that was also

a kind of a weird situation because that

first one of course they unveiled in

january and that didn't launch until

  June yeah that's a good question i

wonder when those original iphone review

unit went out yeah i think they had them

for a longer time but maybe I'm wrong

about that I i think they might have to

and I know that Apple i know that there

  was a lot more

hand holding the internet maybe not

handling is wrong term but that like I

help like the one that the guys who

lived in New York who got them i know

Steven Steven Levy was one that there

were Apple engineers who went to New

York for the period with the entire

period of the review in case something

he encountered any kind of problem or

anything like that yeah and remember

there were there was like pictures i

think there's a picture of steve jobs

like a little league baseball game using

  it

no as soccer soccer yeah I know that's

right it's terrible that I even

recognize the soccer but you know so he

had no problem using it out in public

because again it already been unveiled

funny that it is one of the best

pictures i can remember of jobs because

it really seems like over the years

there were very few like casual pictures

of him in his private life yeah and you

know it's to the credit of the tech

  industry that it's nothing like

Hollywood where there's any kind of a

paparazzi culture right and who else

would they really be I mean jobs maybe

that's why is that jobs may be the only

guy who in the history of silicon valley

who if there had been a paparazzi

industry people would have found it

right it was just a guy is just another

guy at the soccer game and there's a

picture of Steve Jobs using an iphone

  before the iphone right right

the ultimate humble person I gotta put

that in the show notes so yeah I I book

i tried to go through and put a lot of

questions coming at us I tried to

bookmark a few of them as well but i

know you went through and start some of

your your favorites because he's been

coming in for a couple hours now so I

think you know the first thing we should

probably address though is the is the

map situation because as expected that's

another thing that everyone is talking

about right now and then some people are

up in arms and your dash disposed

there's there's one on techcrunch that

even have any red yet but it's a it's

pretty you know scathing review of of

what's going on with the map situation

so which probably and heels was pretty

good and his example is pretty pretty

damning where he lives in Manhattan and

  searched for

  something-something Lexington and it did

came up it as whatever lexington avenue

  in brooklyn

yep which is really really a bad guess

and it is exactly the sort of thing that

google is good and not just maps but in

anything we're just with a little bit of

contact right of hey you're in manhattan

and if you're searching for some number

  Lexington you almost certainly mean

lexington avenue in manhattan right and

it's because they have years and years

worth of data now to show exactly what

people are likely to be looking for

based on not only you know search

queries but location of that an apple is

is new to this so that's a that's going

to be one of those unfortunate kinda

early road bumps which you know is

something that I you have to imagine

will get better of course it will

um but yeah that's that's gonna be a

really annoying thing have you run into

any anything like that any any major

issues like an in Philadelphia's it is

or is it really you know what in bed

testing it out day-to-day in philly I

  just walk everywhere

ninety percent of the time and it's been

fine yep and it's you know it's good but

it philly is like Manhattan into grid

city so it's really really it's not a

stress test for mapping it's not like

Boston we did the driving did I use the

term by term on saturday morning and he

had we had to go over to New Jersey

because my wife was raising funds for

this charity walk and we have to get

there in New Jersey is kind of notorious

notoriously bad driving State and be

number one that people who live there

just awful drivers and yeah i know that

you know there's people who live in New

Jersey who listen to the show but you

guys you guys know it's true you guys

  terrible that I and it's it's a

  turnaround state where it almost

everywhere you're never allowed to make

a left turn you've got to go past the

intersection and go to a turnaround

right so that you're making a right

right a right to make a left which is

why in my opinion everybody in New

Jersey is a terrible drivers because

they never learn how to make it

after and it is the turn-by-turn

directions were great until the very

very end and then it just sort of but

it's like got us really close and we

there's no way to actually turn on the

road we wanted to me and I think what

happened is it got confused by the whole

turnaround thing like it did I think it

put us right where we wanted to be but

on the other side of the road and it was

you know we just kind of had eyeball it

  from there

you know like like a bunch of monkeys

who don't even have you know computer

and driving instruction right like the

  old days right

I so that was the one that was one

hiccup but other than that it i haven't

run into it but i'm not really a heavy

maps user I wasn't sure how else to test

it i mean i type some things in

philadelphia i type you know how to walk

to city hall and it you know gave me

exactly the right directions to City

  Hall

yep yeah and i am i'm pretty much the

same way I views i use the driving

directions once we were at a wedding

this weekend and we kind of used it to

  get there and work perfectly

I was you know really happy with the way

it worked especially you can go you know

going to other apps and do something and

it keeps learning you when when it needs

to alert you and it's great that works

lockscreen great so that's great that it

works horizontally as well as vertically

and as I had no problem with any of that

it was also you know the maps themselves

were pretty good in here in carmell

which is a less populated area than san

francisco and i was able to find you

know these small little restaurant so

we're going to it all seemed to be there

and and work just fine to get us to

  those places

san francisco have used it on a pretty

good amount of times now the one thing I

haven't tried too much is the the immune

  system here that's not because I don't

think that you know i just i think that

the meat system itself kinda sucks and I

don't I never use google maps for it

because it's just hard to know if the

media is actually working on that day

and they have pretty bad data sharing

for that kind of information and so

that's the thing that has everyone up in

arms are one of the major things that

have as everyone up in arms as well is

of course the the public transportation

stuff and apples said they're going to

partner with third-parties on it i think

some of those are starting to go live

  I don't

I don't think that they were alive they

work they certainly weren't live leading

up to the reviews i looked for a few

things and nothing was was ready to go

yet just said it was kind of a blank

  screen in the transit area

yeah same with passbook yeah I actually

hear that I got some us i got them to

send me some demo things for passbook

right before the thing and that's the

network seems to work well and I think

some of those apps are going live right

now too but the transit stuff is

  problematic though I've already someone

you know buzz Anderson actually tweeted

out earlier to look at this app called

transit which i just downloaded and this

thing is pretty slick-looking it updates

  in real-time

it's optimized for the iphone 5 screen

already I mean this looks this i'm going

to get a lot of shit for this but this

looks better than anything in the

transit aspect of google maps that i was

using previously within ios5 and before

that so you know and as it work across

cities right now it's you know it's just

kind of locating you and it's located me

in san francisco and it's showing me the

nearest bus routes and its hiding 32

more just in case i want to search for

something then you can also search I

could try like looking up New York but

you know it's San Francisco is at San

Francisco only or would it work in other

major cities i believe it works in every

major city is and it's actually using

it's powered by four square data which

is sort of interesting huh that's

  interesting

yeah because that's the one that I was

wondering how this is gonna play out and

I know that it you know there is no

  worldwide standard for public

transportation sharing and at some of

  these even know that public

transportation and you'd think that they

would be obligated to sort of make it a

somehow share the data right that

there's some you know proprietary honest

as who's got the data and stuff like

right and there's all kind of different

kinds of systems and they don't talk to

each other even in San Francisco there's

like two or three different systems

caltrain barred community and to you too

Google's credit they it was a mountain

of work to just sort of a encapsulate

all that in practice and another you

  know there's there's a bunch of other

  apps that are

that are have been out for a bit or

coming out soon that are kind of using

  city-by-city different variations of the

map so you download a specific after New

York City you download a specific map

for San Francisco for Los Angeles

whatever so i'm not sure just because

this one is is located just 22 where I

am but this this looks pretty good you

know so i think it remains to be seen

how well it will integrate within maps

itself and if it's a if it's worth

getting up in arms about right now

you know it's it's definitely understand

where the rage is coming from because it

is something that at least on the face

of it looks like Apple is taking a step

backwards and people are going to be

upset about that from a functionality

standpoint but everyone i think you know

knows why it's happening at all and I

think you made this point earlier that

we don't know for sure that it was all

just Apple wanted to do it maybe there

  was some negotiation between between

Google as well and and they just decided

  to part ways

I heard something to that effect you

know just just kind of a one source

thing but something along those lines it

wasn't all that different from the

YouTube situation i actually after i

wrote that today I had a little birdie

tell me that I that was roughly in the

in the ballpark and that's not to say

  that it's entirely google's fault it's

just that there were negotiations yes

and that where Google was coming from

Apple was not it really was not

satisfactory so what if there was any

sort of debate within Apple about

whether their own mapping stuff was

ready to pull the trigger on this year

or do they need another year that that

the stance with google made it worse and

nudge them more in that direction yeah

  like I don't think that it was I don't

think it was cut and dry in any way I

don't think it was cut and dry in terms

of where Apple felt their own mapping

tech was I don't think it was cut and

dry like Google's demands were simply

untenable but it definitely was a mixed

  bag like that

yeah that's essentially the same exact

thing that I heard and so that I mean it

  is what it is

there's there's no question that this is

going to get better over time I'm I'm

right because it gets better by

  collecting

usage data right and that's why and just

like with Siri or Siri got better so

they kind of had to release serie as a

beta 2 early like not good not right

because it needed the millions of people

using it to get better with the

aggregate data the big difference though

is that Siri wasn't replacing something

up right where as apples Maps are

replacing a mapping system that was

really yeah and i know you highlighted

earlier and uh then I did later as well

the SKA trapper was talking a bit about

the flip side of this which is

everyone's overlooking but it's also the

reason why this is probably more of a

mutual thing too is because this is

actually really bad for google as well

because they're losing tens of millions

of devices that were sending them data

and and perfecting their mapping system

and that's all going out the window now

it's not just the maps app itself it's

also the sdk stuff so all those apps

that were using the the Google Maps SDK

which are now switching over to Apple

maps I mean google can't be happy about

losing that data that's those are that's

this is valuable information that they

no longer have yeah and even so even the

other thing too and I you know I'm not

trying to save rod you know the new maps

is all a big bag of candy but there's

definitely some good stuff in there like

the graphics are much improved and

they're based on it not just in terms of

graphic design although that's better to

they just look better but now they're

very right so they scale better

whereas before it was all a bunch of

bitmaps and if you zoom dinners and dad

you had to redownload a new set of tiles

because it was all bit maps google has

vector images from apps but withheld

them from Apple Apple you know didn't

get those right now they have them

because they have their own tiles right

and it's definitely better when you do

pinching and zooming out it's better

yeah I so and the app is better the app

is actually been much just in terms of a

stepping away from the data right

mapping that it just the interface of

the app itself is really nice

  yeah I mean I'd I've I as i said in in

  my review of it huh

  you know it's it i don't think that it's

as good yet as as Google Maps previously

was but I don't think it's that big of a

deal and I know that people are going to

be up in arms about it because it's a

  change and everyone

it's up in arms about pretty much every

change and there's no question that it's

a status lights up backwards but I don't

know how the actual regular general

public will feel about this so right now

we're still in the phase where it's

mostly you know the the tech community

and the you know those the surrounding

areas that are downloading iOS 6 today

and are experiencing it for the first

time in getting all up in arms but when

regular people start to use this it's

not clear how much help view it as a

downgrade or if they'll really even care

if they'll notice the differences I mean

I you know obviously people use transit

a lot will public transportation and

  will but uh overall i don't i don't know

I I just don't think it ends up being

that big of a deal like three months

  from now

yeah I don't think so either we'll see

  it's definitely something I think

everybody's going to keep their eyes on

  and I also don't think it's something

that Apple is in any way under

estimating yeah I don't think they were

like oh yeah we'll just switch maps i

mean i think they realized that this is

this is a pretty big deal similar to the

move from doing everything tethered over

USB to your computer to iCloud right now

that if people are going to start

trusting their backups to iCloud apple

took that you know it has to work i

think very surgeons and I think in

hindsight it's worked out very well yeah

your con another thing before we get to

the the reader questions just a couple

of notes i had it really stands out to

me today that and just you know I'm sure

there's somebody somewhere had a problem

downloading and upgrading to iOS 6 but

it seems like again it was another major

update that rolled out really really

smoothly and nobody else in the industry

is getting updates i like yeah we're

here is the day the OS comes out and

everybody who wants it can just go get

it over the right eye was even i was i

was at home earlier before i had head

out for the day for my meetings and

debating whether or not to update my

iphone 4s which I had an updated yet I

didn't even have it on the beta on any

of the beta builds of the virus six and

so I just was like well let's just see

how it works i don't see much meet many

people complaining about on twitter and

took 10 half an hour total between all

the reset center and installing and

downloading and and then resetting and

  it worked fine was great

yeah i did the same I had mind i did my

iphone 4s on the eight through the ADC I

did the i put the GM build on a couple

days ago or but when i started testing

the iphone 5 so that I could do that if

I did anything side-by-side it would be

the same OS on both yep but i did my

ipad just like a normal consumer today

and it couldn't have been easier

I mean is just tap tap and then you know

next thing you know I'm update and one

nobody else gets I mean android users

dream of something her height and wave

and I think they've been promising it

for a couple years and I just never

seems to quite get come to fruition one

other nice thing that I noticed up with

see the iOS 5 iOS 6 update on the 4s was

you know so i have used that that device

for a year now I had a lot of kind of

saved history within within maps for

things i was searching for it really

it's saved all that stuff even though

it's a completely new app completely

redone they were able to pour all of

  that saved information including my

searches you know that I was doing a few

days ago are all still right there which

was and even though the search field

itself was still populated with the last

thing that I had searched for in the old

version of maps that's pretty impressive

  interesting

yeah NSA I didn't notice that yep that's

pretty smart which is another 1i have

design sort of all over the map here but

I'm interested because you had the black

the iphone 5 i've got the white one

do you agree that blacks look a lot

  blacker on screen

oh yeah yeah yeah I also think and just

looking at the picture you posted in

your your review on techcrunch when the

screen is off it looks like black is

blacker yeah so I'm looking at it right

  now

you really can't tell where the screen

starts until you tilt it a little bit

into a bit of light and then especially

with the so it just on the just on the

main screen the lockscreen you've got

the the black along the top the black

bar with the the carrier in this case

verizon and the the battery indicator

and it's pretty close to what the with

the face of the of the actual phone is

  it's a

and I think you hit on this in your

review that with the letterbox apps you

don't think you think you might not be

able to tell where kind of the the face

of the iphone ends and where the the

  letterboxing begins and that's really

true especially you know part of it is

because of the colors and the the light

of the of app itself but it almost just

looks normal it looks like you're using

an iphone 4s it's just kind of centered

in the middle of a of the slightly

  larger device

yeah it definitely sticks out on the

white one yeah the letterbox apps really

it just looks a little off

  yep i don't but again i don't think that

should keep anybody who wants to buy the

white one from behind the white one

because I mean I mean literally today I

think I've had 50 app updates

huh yeah i think i'm down to one app

that I use on a daily basis that hasn't

been updated yet for the new screen

yeah I simple no I talked to a developer

earlier who had updated right before the

rollout and just said super easy as long

as as long as the as long as your app is

doing something that's kind of a linear

timeline based thing I mean you're

almost of these already have scrolling

built-in so all they're doing is just

showing more of that screen so it's a

  really easy I i wrote yesterday when I a

link to the new netflix app and i called

it weak sauce that it wasn't updated yet

and and I got some flak from people

saying come on give these guys a break

the thing was only announced six days

  ago

yep and so maybe that weak sauce is a

little bit harsh but the thing that I

noticed those that i was already getting

updates from other apps that supported

it and Ron the fact that netflix plays

video video really is the one I would

say it's the one thing that benefits the

most from the new screen size because

it's you know right 16 tonight I mean

that's the single biggest reason I think

to go 69 this video playback and what's

the one thing you use the netflix app

for video playback and netflix went out

of their way that they can test or

whatever but it doesn't seem to have

stopped anybody else like you said I'd

you know I can't speak firsthand

  I don't have it

app in the App Store but doesn't seem

like it was hard then all of the apps

that I've tried so far that bet claim

compatibility in the release notes every

single one of them works just fine i

haven't had a single app that says that

it works on the iphone 5 screen that

doesn't for some reason and remember

that i don't have those developers have

actually seen most of them have not seen

even the iphone 5 they're doing it

purely off of the the emulator so right

and yeah netflix obviously knows that

they had in their notes like coming soon

you know support for for the iphone 5

i'm also you know along those lines

it's pretty sad that Twitter released a

huge update yesterday and could not add

in support for the iphone 5 I mean it

maybe it was coincidental maybe they

were targeting that day before I mean

they couldn't have known when the

reviews are going to come out or you

think they wouldn't though they are

built into iOS I mean they do work with

Apple closely and so how can Apple not

giving the heads up like a on this day

you know make sure your app is is kinda

ready to go and then just adding a kind

of fuel to the fire tweet but of course

comes out with one that's right the

  update that's perfect

so did Twitter later new and I'm just

bike when I almost took the screenshot

and then what I should have and could i

would have had to hold it until after

the embargo is over but I had an update

yesterday where there were three and

only three apps that had been updated

and it was swimming so poetic it was

Twitter later new tweet bot and Twitter

and it was the to third-party clients

that updated to support the new screen

size and Twitter that didn't write which

is yeah i mean to be a student is waste

of oxygen and there is facebook did not

to push an update even with all their

new talk of native compatibility and the

new integration within ios6 they're not

still ready to go and they have a huge

team obviously but it's ridiculous that

Twitter put out a huge update 5 point

out they make a big deal about it and

they don't have it ready to go for this

  now

alright let me take a break let me do

this first sponsor and for sponsor is an

iphone app called log your run all one

word log your run and it's an iphone app

for people interested in tracking any

  sort of outdoor activity

it's developed by a guy named Tim

Westies is an indie developer and he's

been writing apps for the app store all

the way since 2009 and so update

speaking of apps that are on the ball

doing the right thing he worked hard to

  have an update ready

the one that's in the app store right

now it's ready for the launch of the

iphone 5 i can vouch for it takes

advantage of the new screen size and an

email Tim tells me he lost seven pounds

  just while testing it

the new version for ios6 so he uses it

takes advantage both of the iphone 5 the

new screen size and some of the new

features in iOS 6 and they've got some

new gps stuff that location stuff in

ios6 it takes advantage of the new map

api's more accurate location like Wi-Fi

location so it's really great perfect

for ios6 even better than it was before

on ios5 so what's the apt to well it

tracks or like a pedometer type thing

tracks how far you've gone and it also

has training programs that you can do

you can do stuff for like couch to 5k

you can train for a full marathon it's

even great though for stuff if you're

not like into running or jogging or

something like that it's great for just

logging walks like if you walk your dog

and want to see how far you go every day

it'll tell you how many calories you've

burned distance traveled time taken and

and to top it all off you can share the

data on Twitter or Facebook or and or

you can set up an account on log your

run dot-com and the data will sink to it

and so it's all backed up and you can

switch to another device plug in your

user account and all of the data you

used on your other device is right there

I really great app in the App Store 199

to box-to-box and you get this great app

you can find out more you can look up

log your run on the app store or you can

go to log your run dot-com check it out

how you know speaking of the third party

app that suit that's doing that

integration like they are how does how

  does that look

I really haven't played around too much

  with this

third party stuff so doing it through

the sdk I assume it's just kinda the

exact same maybe the hooks are the exact

  same looks just looks great

yep just looks like them you know

look it's exactly what you think it's

just you know the new look with the the

new style maps yep nice so let's get to

some of these questions let me see

let's see what my favorites have I just

favorited a bunch of these questions I

lot of these we already covered or the

maps concerns real or just hyped fears i

think it's hyped right now it's its

overall but we don't think there is

something to really have to find out

more people started yeah I have one real

  quick that wasn't that I didn't see

answered in any and things so someone

asked a lot for reading these to make

himself but Marcus squiggle asks the

keyboard in landscape mode so obviously

we have a larger screen now so how does

it handle that so I look I you know did

a little test with the 4s versus the

iphone 5 so it's actually the keys are

bigger they do make them a little bit

bigger so it should be easier to type

now in landscape mode that was

previously there's also some little bit

a sliver of kind of open room now on the

Sun either side of the keyboard and the

  spacebar significantly larger than it

was on the floor s so yeah so they

basically just made the keyboard a

little bit longer including all the keys

obviously for when it's in a hole

vertical mode it's going to be the exact

same keyboard because it's the same

vertical with but yea landscape the keys

are bigger but they're not as big the

maximum size they could be that now sort

of like they figured out look here's the

big here's the widest it could be and

still be comfortable and it still

doesn't stretch to the whole side to

there's like some white space on the

  left and right yep exactly

I never type that way do you know I

  don't either

  mostly i don't i don't use I use you

know the horizontal view for looking at

it at watching videos trying to think I

do I use it a lot actually on the ipad

especially now with this with the

  logitech keyboard accessory constantly

in landscape mode but i don't use the

iphone all that much some games and some

  videos it's pretty much

yeah same here do you have the same

problem i do with the letterbox taps

were typing his own yes keyboard yeah

raised i was glad you said that in your

  review i didn't didn't really hit upon

that I i noted that it's hard to III

keep miss hitting on top when you know

I'm trying to scroll to the top because

i'm going i'm aiming kind of four right

below the ear piece and instead you need

to aim for the kind of where that the

time is so that's kind of screwed me up

a bit but yes also while typing with the

with the keyboard it when it's in a

letter letter box to app is a is

definitely a bit off i am especially

having problems with the lower left for

  some reason I just yet

I same here to sing the same exact thing

here yeah like the shift key and I don't

know but again I really don't think it's

going to be a problem i really think

every app that I use on a regular basis

going to be updated probably by the time

  this show airs yeah

yep totally Lex Friedman our friend Lex

Friedman asks when you run an older app

boxed is tapping the top of the iphone

screen scroll up there we go must you

tap the actual status bar yeah that have

to tap the status has to be the steps /

  that's that's something i've also been

  annoying to me

ng letterbox area is just a dead zone

there's it doesn't does nothing like it

doesn't even exist though as far as I

did you notice that when so when you

have a push notification that comes in

it goes down in that area and it

actually does not go over the Apple it

goes down perfectly into the space the

the black space above the app which i

think is no I I did not notice that and

as far as I can died can't say I read

every single review but i do believe

that yours is only when i read that

pointed that out so that's actually a

point to mg good observation i give you

  I know I hadn't seen I thought that was

a it's a pretty nice touch of of of how

to do that because remember before when

people were talking about how they could

  possibly do a longer screen

some people were mentioning that like

maybe they just do kind of notifications

in that area because right now it's kind

of just goes above the top of the app

and that's that's kind of what they

ended up doing for older apps is that

what happens with apps that aren't

letterbox though does this do they get

  squished down

the letter they don't get squared

animations they get yeah it goes on top

you know it has that weird kind of

animation where it almost looks like

it's rotating in yea though maybe they

  should have squeezed them down

presuming that they all support you know

there are no apps that support only the

big size right so they already have

those those uh those assets that they

need to get the size right don't know

what switching the assets would be like

but yeah I was always I've always been a

little I always thought there was little

strange how notifications kind of role

in on top of top of the apps but things

like when you're on a call or you have

something else you know you have skype

that's live it squishes everything right

it rather than kind of rolling down

rolling on top of it that actually

  squishes whereas notifications just lie

on tops kind of a weird thing you know

and that brings to mind my least

favorite change in ios6 very least and i

find it almost baffling and Craig

Hockenberry and I talked about it a few

weeks ago he was on the show but i think

that segment got cut during the editing

process all sorts of good stuff gets cut

on these shows which is the new colored

  status bar

oh yes yeah where it's some kind of

algorithm that the there you know and

and in all the built-in apps it's blue

right with where you can see it's like

if you open settings app you can see it

the open settings app instead of this

silver status bar wherever it used to be

silver and preview all previous versions

of iOS 6 like a platinum sort of color

  now it's a it's a color that's computed

on the fly based on the color of the

status bar at the top of the screen so

in settings it's sort of a light blue

and in theory like an app like Yelp

where it's read it would be pink or

something like that so I i just opened

yelp it's not met yet but you're also

isn't optimized yet no I actually what

  Yelp did done

no I think they did optimized but i

thought what I noticed was that Yelp

went with the black status Yelp is black

sorry right it's not right time so what

  is it

it's soaked this to me is so confusing

and it's actually very disappointing and

almost a little concerning that this

that status bar color thing went through

the whole summer and nobody at apple

took it out because a it's ugly

it really is it it looks terrible i

think even when it's blue and other apps

that have custom colored status parts

which is a nice way and a common way for

apps to brand themselves you know like

some to do lap as instead of being blue

it's green right that's like their color

and Yelp clearly very branded with the

red netflix branded with red you know

that you use a good way to brand your

app right on these colored status bar

  it's just ugly I really can't believe

that that they would do that and it's

like it's more complicated now it's like

why is it or the second reason why i

think it's a bad idea is that a colored

  statusbar previously always had very

  specific meaning right

yep i'm not going to say that it means

you're on a roll or green means there's

  a phone call yep

Blue means you've got tethering on yep

  and then a connection somebody's

connected with with what they call

  tethering internet sharing or what

everything right but you're tethered and

you're in other words you're you know

you you don't want to accidentally leave

it on like I said marco arment at WWDC

had his macbook tethered to his iPad

because it was better than the hotel

Wi-Fi but I left it open when he went to

sleep and then itunes kicked in and

downloaded a new episode of mad minute

that's not hired her to get a lot so he

was out like 15 bucks it was like a

  fifteen dollar extra charge for

downloading an episode was so you want

to know that though you want that blue

  status information is important and

really recording another thing that is

that is that is actually tricked me i

look at this and i have mail open right

now and it looks like i'm tethering

because it's pretty much the same you

know it slightly differently and it's

not even like with the mail app so the

mail already has kind of this gradient

fade at the top of it going from kind of

a gray or or or white to a darker blue

and so it just doesn't really match the

this kind of muted blue that they have

along the the status bar just it just

doesn't look very good now really does

the black I think the ones that do black

look pretty good i wish they were just

going to the third reason that i find it

concerning is that the the the proper

solution was staring him right in the

  face which is too

that's not you know it's not to say that

the status bar color rules from the

iphone didn't need to be changed

whatever I think they could have been

made better but that's what they should

have done is just copy the ipad where

here's the rules for the ipad status bar

if the status bar is visible it's black

ok that's it that's the rule there is no

colored status bar on the ipad that's it

it's always if it's there it's black yep

and that's it and it's great i think

that's what they should have done for

the iphone just make it black all the

time yeah it really does look better

when it is black so so what I think

  developers should do because developers

get to choose you get in the old days

used to get to choose between the silver

one or the black one or not to have 1i

guess you could have like a clear one ya

like shows your wallpaper through the

through the back right is everybody

should just ask for the black one

yeah and and you know and wait for Apple

to get the hint and just you know in a

future update to iOS just make it black

for everybody and take out the whole

  option

yeah but yeah maybe if I could change it

in any one app it would be male because

males the one app I use the most

we're that stupid blue status bars

staring and staring me right in the face

yeah it's pretty bad I'm trying to look

now to see if there are any others that

are better is glaring is as the blue

even like Apple's own even the music app

  uses black now

alright yeah well I think anybody with

good taste wants the black one now right

I don't know because it was the Apple

should have done is just giving

  everybody the black one

yeah yeah let's see next question is

  when sort of open-ended

well let's take the first one ryan jones

has two questions first is are we now

convinced that they're going to stick

with a tick-tock strategy in other words

is next year's iPhone going to look just

  like this one right

i would guess yes i would guess that the

next iPhone you know based on nothing

other than what they've done in the past

but i think i think they're pretty happy

with this design and I think they should

be I think they have every reason to be

pretty happy with this design so I you

know and love unless they're going with

  something radically different i don't

know why they would necessarily change

this i'm trying to think if there's any

  improvements they could do

of course you know there are

improvements they could do but is there

anything that uh that would constitute

kind of a lot of work being put in to

  replace something that's that's a that's

pretty well done right now I i would

guess that I think unless something

  turns up

yep you know like like all of a sudden

three months from now all of these day

one I phones like the glue starts coming

off for some right then they start

  peeling apart you know

not unless there's something like that

some kind of technical problem that

comes up I i think they would because I

  think it's Renee I think it's really

good and be i think that they appreciate

the way that they can benefit from

releasing a new phone that already has a

  gazillion cases right and accessories

that that fit on day one you know one

thing that people have been saying that

  I haven't noticed but I get that I've

got the question a few times is scuffing

on the back and so you have the white

one so it's silver mines the slate or

  what Slater Slater whatever they're

calling it i haven't noticed that yet

but a few people have brought it up so i

don't know if that will end up being an

issue but that could be something where

maybe they you know reinforce or change

the coding on the on the aluminum of the

back if that really is an issue and that

remains to be seen and it wouldn't be

unprecedented make remember the first or

one of the first ipod nanos yes the

contractions yep some kind of plastic

that was bizarrely scratches all right

almost hard to believe that went through

  testing

  I haven't noticed it but I you know I

I tend to take pretty good care of my

iphones in general and I take extra

special care of these review units right

uh so I can't say that I've put it down

on any surface that i think would have

even scratched it but somebody told me

that and I didn't look but somebody told

me that in in gadgets photos of theirs

that they're black one looks like along

the Sham furred edge there's a word that

maybe even more in the last week then

then a rest of my life combined yeah

that you can it looks like the black is

wearing off and it's sort of silver I

heard that too i haven't seen the

picture yet myself either i had I don't

notice that though at least not yet and

I've been I just throw it in my pocket

like I like I do with all the phones

kinda I have no well I don't have my

keys in the same pocket so that wouldn't

do it but uh you know i'm not being

extra delicate with it I'd but I haven't

  no I i don't think i am either and i

have not noticed any kind of scratching

my looks I think with a little rub on my

shirt here that it would look mint

  condition

yeah so we do expect the tik tok to

continue then I want you to yeah I want

everything that it it really benefits

them economy of scale wise of course

though that just doubles down on all of

the oh my god this is so boring it looks

can't believe another year the phone

looking exactly the same right reaction

and kind of like I said I I think that's

in the same way that like the iphone has

been growing at this insane pace

  year-over-year I think Matt a point

richmond i forget his name is a kid a

high school kid but I think he was the

first one to point out that but now

shoulders been saying it publicly that

every single generation of the iphone

has sold more than all previous

generations combined yeah thats such as

bizarre but it's just insane growth but

it explains why everything you know

  surrounding apples financials have

exploded and rice five years on i think

that that chasm between consumers and

the as as Charles Arthur called them in

his review in The Guardian the digerati

  yeah

that's grown too it's not like it stayed

the same its it growing you're over here

this sort of oh my god I can't believe

Apple has done that so but yeah and that

almost makes me think it's more likely

that they're going to stick with the

same design because what more would

drive those people ballistic next year

then if the new one comes out and looks

  the same

I do wonder like do they stick with kind

of the 5s moniker though because like s

you know it's either stood for speed or

kind of cereal you could say last year

when I but it's like with this one this

is significantly faster than the 4s and

so it's like they're not calling it

though the 5s because it's just the five

and so it's like what what do they keep

the s up what do they do is the S

arbitrary you know like to call it the

  5l for something else

how do they call it the 68 only think

they would it doesn't see it seems let

you know but you never know like they're

naming don't if there's anything that

the irrational about Apple it's the way

they named right right we were almost of

us that you know I think we've talked

  about this previously that we're

everyone was kind of expecting at least

a few months ago that that would just be

called the new iphone because they would

go along the lines with the iPad because

  it makes sense

it's just called the iphone on the back

you know they don't they don't make any

thing but it's you know for for

  marketing everyone was already calling

it the iphone 5 why not call it the

iphone 5 it's what everyone understands

and what you know they already have all

this built-in hoopla around it so why

not go with that right now I'm not sure

  I either

they could to you know I think that you

know if they wanted to they could have

and i know that it there it's different

than the iPad because with the ipad they

don't have this model where they keep

the old one around year after year

although the ipad 2 is still remember i

  don't i don't think they're going to do

that next year right uh but i still

think though that even if they were all

if they just erase the four from the

iphone for any race the 4s from the

iphone 4s and just had these three

phones in their lineup free 99 and 199

299 399 they could still do it if they

just called them all iphone yeah I'm

just said that the newest one is the new

iphone and the other ones are just

called iphone and then you have to

figure out well for $99 you'll get a

quote iphone right it has these specs

drivers free you'll get one with these

specs and I sort of like uh I think

horse said you had a comment on a while

ago talking about well maybe they're

going maybe they're sticking with the

number because and while they didn't

with the iPad because the ipad if there

is an ipad mini through all of sudden be

two different kind of different devices

not just different excuse but to actual

  different devices

whereas with the iphone there is no

iphone mini and it's kinda pointing to

the fact that there will only ever be

the iphone and not kind of so they can

keep going up and in numbers whereas if

you had the ipad 3 and then the ipad

mini and then you have the ipad for the

ipad mini 2 that gets pretty messy

  obvious reasons but i don't know i don't

think that's the that's the the worst

theory in the world i have no idea

  haven't selected or not

yeah it does right there is a question i

have had down with them calling the I've

pad that the latest iPad the new ipad is

let's say were the speculations right

and then an iPad Mini or an ipad air

whatever you want to call it comes out

next month october plenty of time for

  the holidays

did they still call the new ipad the new

ipad even though it's not the newest

iPad because right and especially raises

I really makes me curious about what

they're going to call the thing and how

are they going to call that the ipad 3

as i call it after it's not the newest

iPad right and what and what if they do

upgrade the iPad as well with the new

  dock connector

you know right at the regular-sized iPad

as well so yeah there's some branding

  confusion potential there

yeah I wonder how they're gonna play

that but i'm not sure but I wouldn't you

know i'm i'm a lot more sure that well I

wouldn't say short but I would bet a lot

more money that next year's iPhone

whatever it's called is form factor

compatible with these then I am about

whatever the hell call it you know the

5s or something knew anything about

  colors

  they'll ever go colored they've

obviously gone that way with the ipod

touch this year they've gone you know

full-on into the you know color you know

wide range of colors five colors to

  choose from I

  choose from I

they could do it with the iphone but I

think that going with like five colors

that they wouldn't do that on day one

because they wouldn't want to try to

anticipate demand and have you know a

bunch of a bunch of yellow ones left

over and not enough black ones or

something like that right and it's

  something that actually could help

could Apple everyone has talked about

this a lot but they're in this it's not

it's not a problem per se but it is sort

of a interesting situation where the

vacuum that's created when people know

that a new iphone is coming they just

you know people stopped buying them and

so that causes the because there's all

kinds of problems with the the quarterly

reports and causes problems on Wall

Street even though people should be

smart about this they're just not and so

if they did something like you know

  halfway through the product cycle

release 35 colors whatever that could

help bolster those those those numbers

are just as a question of doesn't make

economic sense for them to do people get

up in arms because they just bought the

blue iphone and now the iphone 5s is

  coming out

you know those types of questions in the

meantime no it is definitely an

  opportunity for competing phone makers

to stand out i mean nokia clearly has a

minute haven't made any money on it

because it doesn't seem like many people

are buying Billy's branding wise they've

sort of position whose house is that the

colorful phone maker and then today HTC

launched a bunch of windows phones that

yeah I think they look good i'm at least

in the pictures although they do you

have seemed very very thick don't want

to get into a discussion of a phone i

haven't even touched but it does seems

  right

seems like they're going thicker when

the market leader is just gone to dinner

than anybody and again I think you know

the case thing comes into play with the

iphone where is a lot of people still

use cases we'll see if that changes at

all with the iphone 5 but that's it

that's you know that's one way that

people customize it with their own

colors so back to the question is

Jeffrey been a via asks good question

should i upgrade to iOS 6 if on an

iphone four or 3gs maps don't have

turn-by-turn or 3d no sirree removes

  google is it worth it

hmm that is a good question really is

i'll tell you one thing one reason i can

think of that you might want to i want

my advice would be to anybody in that

position would be wait wait and see what

people say because if it's determined

really slows those devices down you're

going to hear about it soon so i would

say a weight be the one thing that jumps

out is that it seems like apples really

  improved WebKit performance again

  because a non-tech linked to a thing

where somebody had posted the SunSpider

benchmarks of yes I've and out of

curiosity I ran it on my for ass after

upgrading to iOS 6 and the numbers i was

getting on the 4a swear way higher than

the ones that they had listed which

presumably were on the you know whatever

the latest version of iOS 5 where it

actually move the iphone 4s up to like

up from like I don't know somewhere in

the teens to like number six on their

list so it seems like web heart really

got a nice boost so that those numbers

for the iphone 5 aren't just because the

a6 cpu is so fast but that they've

  actually improved javascript and HTML

rendering and in WebKit yeah and so

those are that type of stuff is going to

be stuff that comes out over the next

week or next two weeks where you see not

only javascript performance you see like

is camera performance better on those

devices is battery life better on those

devices as a result of iOS 6 so i think

yeah that's really how you have to weigh

this and you'll also hear more about if

people after all the this the kind of

controversy right now if people really

are annoyed with with the Newman's

product and and whether it's a it ends

up being in just a minute yeah kind of

yeah I'm and you know and it's in a way

that maps like i said is two steps

forward two steps back if you don't get

  turn-by-turn directions or 3d it you're

missing some of the steps forward and

then you might really know if you're a

heavy maps user if you use your iphone 4

and you do use maps all the time you

really might also might want to wait and

see what other people have to say i

would definitely I would probably wait

and what if google just comes out with

their own maps and then that totally

negates that problem you know it doesn't

sound like that's gonna happen anytime

soon yeah I wonder about that Danny

Sullivan just had a thing i like to

before the show started where he got

like a sort of no comment from them

about that but I wonder what that means

that like because I if I were google and

you know i'm definitely not you

and we had a google maps app that we

  felt like it

we're working on it but it's not ready

yet maybe another couple of weeks but

soon i still wouldn't say soon

I you know I think that the Apple

strategy of keep your mouth shut until

  it's actually done done

war never lets it go and it's never

fails there's no reason to you know to

talk about it and say it's coming soon

if you're not a hundred percent sure but

so didn't write when all of this first

came out when iOS 6 was still in beta

and and everyone figured out what was

going on didn't someone at Google come

out and say something like we look

forward to having some mapping product

on for iOS devices in the future the

several months and already but i found

themselves something like that like post

  do I can't i don't remember exactly

where but yeah after WWDC when it was

made official i remember something like

right so maybe he was just maybe with

  someone speaking out of turn

or maybe you know maybe point plans have

changed who knows but yeah I think

you're right that if they're just not

saying anything about it now it doesn't

mean it could go either way but i do

think it's a different case than with

the YouTube app and and for a couple of

reasons for one thing I think that the

monetization strategy for YouTube is a

lot more obvious which is that google is

making money with pre-roll ads on

YouTube videos and now with the

standalone youtube app that you get from

the app store they're showing the

pre-roll ads whereas the whole built-in

youtube app from apple didn't do the

  pre-roll ads so I i would I think google

is actually happy with this move like it

  sounds weird

only that if you as a partner not an

apple you know you're not Apple but as a

  partner that you would have

  such an incredibly privileged position

  as to have your app

well it wasn't their app but to have

your service featured as one of life 12

default apps even Twitter and Facebook

don't get pre installed by default you

would think you'd never want to give

that but because you didn't they didn't

have ads I actually think that they've

got to be delighted by this and totally

it was a loss right that's all it was

before and it's the number one free app

in the App Store and probably will be

getting so it's going well hide you know

especially as you know for the next

month or two as people update to iOS 6

and maps isn't it's not entirely

different from that because i don't know

if you ever noticed but it wasn't a huge

part like it's much bigger in the in the

in the YouTube situation but there were

sponsored event yes within within maps

and those were controlled by Google and

so Google was making money off of i

don't know how much I don't know if it

was you know any meaningful amount at

all but they definitely had sponsored

locations within maps on iOS and they

were definitely making money from that

and i'm surprised that google that app

allowing it i don't know you know why

they would or wouldn't I don't know what

  those negotiations looked like but

they're losing money as a result of not

  right

  I it was like a different-colored search

result like you tell you in burger and

it was like a blue dot meant like

sponsored and red dots for you know that

the regular results something like that

so yeah there's that motivation but I

just don't think there's as much money

that it compels them to know it is i do

think that there's a competitive angle

they could take where if they would hold

it and have like a wait-and-see attitude

with apples built-in maps if if the

iphone gets a reputation as a crummy

device for maps it it works in Google's

favor if google maps is in the end I

think I think that's what the point of

that one of the techcrunch articles was

about that someone said basically you

should hold back for six months and just

see if Apple kinda buries himself up

with this move right like because you

  know counter-intuitively it actually I

think it's more likely that they're

going to try to do their best on it

standalone google maps app the better

the built-in mapping is in iOS the worse

it is i think it's almost less likely

  because it right right

it just helps it bolsters the android

case and there's never and you know I

warned Bricker a tweet today we're just

said that it makes them set this whole

map thing makes him sad because it's

like that the epicenter of the whole

like hypothetical what if google and

apple were still allies you know and

android google do what their best and

let Apple do it they're best at

imagine like how great of a Maps app

they could have after five years you

know if they were still singing Kumbaya

and have an eric schmidt come up onstage

during events and stuff like that

yeah and you could get you know

different better search results you can

have better tailored things just for the

iphone you get of all kinds of things I

wonder i'm actually gonna load it right

now to see how maps looks within safari

so you can still obviously they have a

tailored version of maps for safari for

iOS and let's just see how it looks when

asked to use your location of course

it's still they got a host ugly blue

they actually it's kind of funny they

have they have this white area at the

bottom for no apparent reason it's

obviously just not tailored yet for the

larger screen they just have this white

area right above the the bottom bar of

safari in between the map in the bottom

  bar that's a they're clearly paying

attention here but it's fast it works

well you can pinch to zoom on

yeah so you know it's it's an option

  it's a it's not ideal

perhaps but it's you know it's something

that works once once a google figures

  out how to do a

custom customized for the the taller

screen i think it's something that

people could go back to I don't know

Anna it just seems to me like the I mean

we good for a quick look up i guess if

you're unhappy with what you got from

the maps app but right if it is

something we're looking for just was not

coming up you could always follow that

you're not gonna want something like

that for turn-by-turn now know his

question from brian no last name in

future iOS do you think the UI risks

growing stale and what features would

you like his suggestions are widgets and

Zephyr styles wipes don't even know what

that mean what does that mean that thing

when you swipe on the keyboard

  I don't know I know I I but you know and

if you're used to it i'm sure it's

frustrating but i guess some people

swear by that we don't know its efforts

elsewhere but you know I definitely

would like to see kind of more maybe

taking more of a cue from some of the

things and in even windows phone where

it's like more live updating things

whether that's widgets or you know even

like the the weather app that showed the

the correct weather kinda like the

calendar does now it shows the right day

I do yeah I you know even if you just

  like a dynamic icon

yeah that could be kind of cool beyond

i'm trying to think the icons are so

small that it would be hard to show

meaningful data but maybe you know maybe

rather than just having a red

notification dot maybe if you have like

a DM and Twitter there's like a you know

like a blue notification dot or

something slightly different so you know

like there's a difference between the

notification elements of it i think

there's there's a little bit of of of

wiggle room for things they could do

  there but again it's hard

apple is not going to change the icons

themselves anytime soon i would imagine

so it's kind of hard you know do you do

like a for icon by four icon widget

  thing I don't know yeah well I wouldn't

it wouldn't shock me and I think if they

did it would be something like that

where you could make a widget that's

  defined as like some

array of of icons you know a two-by-two

somewhere or like you said like a four

  by one line

yeah but I don't see them doing that I

think people under adding nerds tend to

  underestimate the tremendous not even

appeal but almost the the comfort of the

the iOS homescreen simplicity that all

it is right as you know exactly what to

  do all that it

these are your apps yep there's only one

place to go for apps and you know

there's no you know that whole

difference I think between the list of

your apps and your home screen android I

i think it baffles people i do it gives

  me confused sometimes

yep but like you know that when you

delete something from your home screen

and not deleting the app you're just

leaving like an alias to the app and the

app itself is right and then just

swiping over and and then you get to

widgets and then you get to other types

  of contents

I just think cannot underestimate how

comforting normal people find that the

root level of the device is so

profoundly simple and you know yet you

don't do do if do geeks suffer for that

because we can handle things like a live

  updating sports widget

  I guess so but I I i don't know i I'd

but they sort of have those widgets now

right in there just in the notification

screen so they've whether they have

stocks those are the two you know you

have to imagine that will come out with

  more maybe you'll have a

  i-don't-know-what trying to think of

what else you could possibly want you

know maybe even music player in there

but they already have that at the bottom

when you swipe to the left

I think it's a lot more likely that they

would open up widgets in the

  notification center then widgets your

  home screen

I don't think we're ever get widget on

the home screen yeah i agree with that I

also you know it's not really a UI thing

but i would love to see just the ability

to change the things like the default

camera so you know you can change it to

Instagram our camera plus or are one of

the other whatever your favorite camera

app is I don't know if they'll actually

do that but that's there would be a

  small little thing

I'd like to see child yeah and along the

same lines being able to specify a

custom default calendar amp a custom

default am a music player everyone and I

think for a lot of people would be a

custom browser so you could use chrome

is your browser instead of safari that

would be in one containing me I think

ios7 one thing I definitely wish they

had still in safari is just the ability

to switch between tabs without having to

zoom out and kind of you know swipe

between them though the thing that they

doing so far I think it's much better

which is just kind of swiping from the

side and being able to quickly switch

  between them

I like that that element a lot more me

to get breaking me do the second sponsor

and welcome back pics on the tour as or

some people call it Pixelmator as a

sponsor now Pixelmator as I'm sure

everybody knows is a great graphics

photo editing an image editor for mac OS

10 in the app store and they've got a

new version out today 2.11 sounds like a

minor upgrade but its bare with me in

the app store it's free upgrade for

  everybody who's already already got

Pixelmator what they've got is they got

a brand new feature in the new version

and it's called the healing tool or it's

actually a much much upgraded version of

the healing tool actually brings us back

to we're talking about band-aid earlier

  in the show

it's a little band-aid icon in the in

  the toolbar

ah you rub the healing tool you take a

brush rub it over part of the image and

it just replaces if it identifies what

that is and replaces it but they they

have a demo video on their blog go to

pics on tor.com / blog look at the

latest post David demo video have to see

it to believe it what they've got is a

picture of woman laying on grass bunch

of balloons around her you use the

healing tool and rub it over one of

those balloons it gets replaced with

grass and it's all sort of seamlessly

mesh together so that it doesn't look

it's like the balloon wasn't even there

you could do with a brush you can do

with the selection tool select an area

of the screen invoke the healing tool

  and

all it's like magic the magic feature I

  I don't think there's anybody else in

the app store that has a feature like

this you've got to see it to believe it

go to pick some and tour.com / blog to

see the demo video just go to pick some

a tour dot-com to find out more about

the app it's just a fantastic app if you

don't have it in your absolutely nuts

unbelievably good app i actually use a I

  don't know if it's picture

pixelmon towards with it later its pixel

maybe pronounce it is automated so I

figured line for time they sponsored the

show I I always thought it was

Pixelmator and somebody I don't know who

somebody convince me months ago and I

said that they're like no these guys are

from the Netherlands or something like

that it's pixel mentor is not really i

  never knew that

so the first time they sponsored to show

i read it as pics on tour and then I got

all these emails from people saying odd

  you know

great show but by the way you watched it

on their name and I asked them and they

were very very nice about it they said

they don't care how i pronounce it but

it's Pixelmator but now it's like a gag

and i don't i don't know which way to go

with don't know I don't know which way

  to go

I don't know if I should run a gag and

keep mispronouncing it the John Gruber

where I should do it the right way but

just in case anybody's actually have

used it really is Pixelmator okay well I

like Pixelmator a lot actually use it a

pretty but that's like my go-to thing

now because I did I used to use

  photoshop all the time

  push-ups or overkill though i don't

really need to do any kinda major

professional editing to that extent with

PSD files so now i just use pretty much

Pixelmator for every little image tweaks

that i do and i didn't healing tool

thing you gotta see this video I mean

  it's just mind-boggling I haven't tried

to like an indie developer shop with you

know two or three guys is just

  unbelievable really check it out

that's really see any other questions

that's going to get a couple more

questions and you can wrap up the show

yeah I got one that I think I didn't see

  anyone address probably someone address

this one of the reviews i've gotten

through all them quite yet but uh so a

nut media asks does the iphone 5 camera

  take 32 or 16 by 9

photos and the answer is when you're

holding it in landscape mode it takes

  about 32 photos

it's um it's a little bit tricky because

of course the screen is longer so you

wonder if it's taking these long photos

but they actually redid the camera so

you have a quite a large now photo photo

snapper area on the the right hand side

when you're holding it horizontally or

when you're holding it vertically it's

at the bottom but so you have a big

picture taking button now and it it

squishes the screen back to basically

the three by two Russian was what ends

up happening uh I thought the same the

end it's actually that the truth is that

it takes the exact same size pixels as

the iphone 4s I mean same number of pic

same exact pixel dimensions is the

iphone 4s yes the same demands

  8-megapixel yep yep

and of course it's different if you do

the panoramic mode which is huge and I

took 1i I took one and stuck it in my

review and i had to shrink it down so

much because it ended up being like

  something ridiculous like a hundred

thousand pixels by something else or

something like that and as I course had

to shrink that down to get it to work

but it's sort of interesting that the

only way to take those panoramic shots

is by holding it horizontally not

  holding it

oh sorry by holding and vertically not

  pulling your right it's counterintuitive

because you think well it's so super

wide the result that you're going to

hold the camera wide but if you think

about it actually makes sense because

they're going to stitch it together

anyway so why not get the the most

vertical data as possible as you're

shooting that so it actually does kind

of make sense but it is

counter-intuitive I think it also helps

you keep that can hold the camera

because the iphones I find ya always

find is easier to hold up and down and

it is totally nuh and especially now

that it's even thinner you're kinda you

know you're being very delicate with

your fingertips to hold it if you're

  holding it in landscape mode

  here's a quick question I've got this a

couple times is due folders fit another

  row of icons

yes they do so instead of three rows of

icons you get four by four A and

older on the on the screen

yeah it's sort of funny in the reviews i

have read like no one really talks about

the the extra row of icons is being like

a big thing and you would you know when

you first saw the picture whoever i

think was 95 Mac you know actually got

figured out the correct code within with

an Xcode or whatever to make it do the

exiting and I was like the big reveal

because it showed that you're we're

going to get a bigger screen but no one

really talks about that anymore it is

nice it's nice to have an extra row it's

great to have an extra row within the

the folders themselves but I don't know

I i actually tweeted this out earlier

today I don't know I know you said in

your review that that you kind of your

kind of in-between thinking between the

  which was better than the

  three-and-a-half screen or the 4-inch

screen and I was you know I kind of

alluded to the same same I thinking of

it but now after using it now that I'm

out about using it and a nice switching

pretty regularly today since i upgraded

to iOS 6 on the 4s it's just like I look

at the 4s now after using the iphone 5

and it just looks like the short stumpy

slow younger sibling it reminds me of

the of the stumpy ipod nano for

something does it started i use the word

  squat

yeah i also found and it's funny because

I spent all day yesterday really writing

that review i mean i was really in

writing mode all day long and just today

  I realized that i've i've actually

  suddenly subconsciously got developed a

new grip on the phone that does actually

  notice that my nose done

like I called it a used the baseball

parlance like choking up like you're

choking up that applies i found myself

today I went out to to grab a sandwich

and i noticed i was reading checking

Twitter and without thinking about the

grip i noticed that I was doing it so I

do think that that's growing on me and I

know that when I spoke to two apple PR

and questioned it on day one when i got

it they said would you know give it a

  week

yeah you know they've been carrying it

around for a while and that you get used

to you really do get used to it but they

totally understood that the that they

agreed that the first day if you are

like an iphone user daily it is

  definitely it's definitely different

  right

it's just you know it's long it's longer

so it is a different balance yeah you

are you know you're almost forced to

hold it differently chance to make sure

that it's going to be secure in your

hand up like it's going to tip over or

  something

Michael Clements asks how has the

speaker improved or changed for the

iphone 5 any of proximity sensor issues

a lot of the iphone for proximity sensor

  i've said i've noticed nothing I mean

that you know just seems to just I don't

understand why it starts to Speaker I

  would say no change

yes I actually highlighted a different

different a sweet that was also asking

about the speaker i tried it out a

little bit right before we went on you

know 44 I assume we mean the speaker not

the earpiece for listening to to a phone

call but rather for kind of playing

music or playing a podcast or something

through and to that end I don't notice

any difference i think that it's pretty

pretty much the same if anything I feel

like the the 4s one may have been a

little bit louder at the same setting I

  don't know if that's a if that's a

  device change that's not that's

something else but maybe it's my hearing

is weird but in terms of the speaker for

listening to phone calls you know apples

made this big thing about how they have

all the noise can't save some noise

  cancelling elements third microphone and

  I didn't the third microphone right i

did a call and it seemed great

  you know I don't matter honestly don't

hold the phone up to my ear that might

run away cause I do use the that your

buddy and I try to go

yeah I also think that and you know in

my week and I didn't do any kind of

specific testing on i do think that the

improvement i noticed last year in the

vibrator in the 4s have translated over

to this one it seems like that is really

i forget somebody explain the technical

difference and how they changed the the

vibrator in the 4s but it was all new

  compared to the

before and I think that that this phone

has a really it's good one thing that

it's also different with apple and a lot

of these other companies and that Amazon

is one of them is amazon has gone with

the new tablets with stereo speakers and

  they're bragging about it I i I've never

got a straight answer out of Apple but i

do get the impression that their idea is

that stereo speakers on these tiny

devices make no sense because that

they're too close you don't you know

there's no point having stereo speakers

that are right next to each other right

  right there

you know there's that there is an ideal

space in between speakers for its for

you to get the full stereo effect of

something and how can they squeeze that

in to such a small and that maybe

there's an arguably there's some kind of

logic to having stereo speakers on a

tablet maybe on a big tablet but there's

none on a phone right and famously the

what you think our two speakers at the

bottom of your phone have never been to

speakers there's only one speaker right

you know you can replace the music

through speakers even cover up one of

that forget which side left to right but

cover up the one sec it's right on gets

blocked and they may they may the people

may actually recognize that now because

fine because the headphone jack is at

the bottom now it makes one of the

  speaker's grills significantly smaller I

actually thought with my original iphone

  i didn't know that I didn't know it

wasn't stereo i just looked and thought

there were two speakers and so I

remember I didn't go to the Genius Bar

specifically for that problem i went

there for some other problem with the

phone with the original iphone by stand

by the way it looks like one of my

speakers is blown out that goes now

there's this new speaker on that side

like oh it's not like that like a big

dummy like haha you they get people come

on as i do people come here all the time

about that that's funny you know one

other while we're speaking of the kind

of the bottom part of the device I've

noticed that i actually really like the

headphone tracking at the bottom I keep

trying to put it on the top when i first

go to plug-in because I'm just used to

it but i like it because it it seems

it's a much more natural flow from your

hand to putting the device in your

pocket because you don't have to flip it

around in order to do so

because you're holding it in your hand

and then I just put my hand kinda down

to my pocket area and then just like let

it drop in there rather than having to

kind of flip it around it and make sure

that the the the headphone jack is the

thing up so in other words i'm just

  putting it in my pocket

autumn up rather than then top up and i

find that flow to be actually I i asked

  about that change specifically and

sometimes you can ask and and they will

give you a here's what we were thinking

  behind this change explanation yet

sometimes they want and I thought maybe

they would on this one because it's

obviously not this is not super

competitive you know I mean like they're

not going to tell you about the

processes behind how they manufactured a

little bit and drill the aluminum ounce

of my dad but I thought you know up or

down on headphones weed you know what

would be thinking about that and I got a

very polite and not answer but i think

  that it's I think it's twofold i think

one is exactly what you said that if

you're going to be listening to stuff

while the phones in your pocket it makes

total sense for it to be on the bottom

because I everybody puts the phone in

top first right i mean does anybody put

the phone in the other way if they're

not connected the headphones i put the

phone entire first I don't so right

that's the old way if i did want to have

the headphones connected while the phone

is in my pocket i had to put the phone

into me upside down and i think the

other factor is and Schiller has alluded

to this i think in I saw somebody

talking about it but that and talking

about that the move from the old dock

connector to the new lightning connector

is that Apple had originally thought

that people would be using iphones with

docks where you would stick it in a doc

on a 30-pin connector and that's how you

would charge it you have a doc on your

desk and I think the original function

right right night I guess is that I was

stupid enough to buy this thing

I think you're right i think it did

that's a great point yet now no one will

be he's already have said right they're

not going to know they're not going to

do a dock and that did people you know

  people that's not they've they don't

they don't use docs themselves and they

don't think customers to either people

just have cables and they lay the phone

on the donĂt flat on a thing and stick

a cable in there but when they thought

hey I think people are going to use a

dock with this then it made sense for

the headphone to be on top because you

know to be the only way you can access

  the headphone yep

yeah that makes makes a lot of sense i

have a question here from a Jeremy

Collins who s there any other UI

  improvements for taller screeners

limited to simply more information so i

think that's a good question because we

haven't really seen this yet aside from

the CNN app that was an open day which

of course was an open table sorry yes

but I'm both of those were the ones that

were showing off at the actual event as

a good examples of how you can use a

larger screen so for the most part that

the developers who have done app updates

today have just basically allows you to

see more of a of a listview because

that's like a pretty easy update to do

what CNN and open table are doing is

really kind of rethinking the way the

you I cannot can flow because you have

more screen real estate at the top and

bottom and I haven't had too much chance

to play with the CNN I app yet i opened

it earlier but it is really totally

different than it was before and I think

in a very good way so I'm pretty

interested to see how app developers and

abusing that extra real estate in a more

compelling way than just adding to list

him the one app and I I've gone back and

forth over the years between Calendar

apps on iOS I've I've daily you know

spent months with other one chance but

I've lately I've just been using that

the built-in one uh yep and it's a

really nice improvement there where you

can have month view and actually have a

  reasonably sized list underneath that's

not to say that they redid they didn't

really redo the interface it's just that

there's an app where it really does make

a huge difference where before you only

had like one line underneath where is

now you get like three and a half

lines underneath you know so you can see

your day's agenda underneath the month

yep that's so much better than I can't

think of any other app though that is

  specifically really different it's just

  you know just more right

I wonder those you know new people start

to do maybe you incorporate some sort of

tray in that you know at the bottom or

the top kind of because you have the

more real estate there rather than what

you were doing before I don't know I

have no idea what they'll end up doing

but I would imagine that people will be

  experimenting with that starting you

know soon as they get their hands on the

iphone 5 I would think so too i think

it's really nice for and just for the

obvious reason i said in my thing for

  video but reading too

yep and I'll tell you which app it

really stands out to me is I books

because I've always thought that Apple's

designed for ibooks took away too much

space by keeping a like a chapter or

title at the top and the location thing

at the bottom where no matter how you

set it it didn't seem like you got a

comfortable amount of text on screen at

once whereas now you do it really makes

a big difference in that app and instead

  the upper major sighting instapaper

always took greater advantage of the

screen space like when you tap to make

that the toolbar and everything go away

always use the screen rather than I

books does but it's really really nice

to have instapaper now on this on this

  device

yeah and you get something like tech

named to just a web app you know just to

  a web version of it

this is much better because you just

  you're displaying so much more

  information that's not a native app it's

just you know within within safari

itself but because safari now has so

much more screen real estate you know

one thing I I sort of wish they would

they would have borrowed the same thing

that they're doing now when you hold

safari up horizontally there's a new

button at the bottom to be able to make

the top and bottom fade away the top and

bottom bars but you can't do that in

vertical mode and I really wish they

would have done that you know there's

times when I'm just like scrolling

through a bunch of a bunch of

information like a technique for example

  and I don't really need

even the both the URL bar and the the

bottom bar there so I wish they would

have brought that over to the vertical

  mode yeah I i almost said I suspect it's

because they don't want to cram another

button there whereas when you're in

  horizontal mode there's there's a lot of

room lot more room for a button but I

corrected doing everywhere it it makes

as much sense as if feature in vertical

mode is in horizontal mode and the other

thing right putting another button and i

  don't know i know i'm not i don't want

to design the app for them but I do kind

of wish they'd figure out some way to do

it is iCloud tabs where yes I this is

one of my favorite features that Apple

has added across the system this year

and I really you know i was looking

forward to it getting all my stuff

getting all night computers on mountain

Lomax mountain lion and all my devices

on ios6 and it's great except that on

screen type a safari the the clouds you

just click that cloud button and there's

the list of them and on the phone and it

kind of got to go to bookmarks and then

go back to you got tabs and there it is

and it's you're never going to just

leave it there so you're like always

like three taps away from and it's great

on the ipad yeah because its exact same

way in the ipad where it's it's an

actual it's an icon but yeah it's buried

in the menu on and I think it's a great

feature i mean i am always thinking that

I've got this thing i was reading mg's

review of the phone and where is it i

thought i had it and it's because i

forget i was on a different mac or a

  different device or whatever right

I'm you know I've got open tabs on every

device and I never remember which one

neuron and icloud tab is exactly what I

  need

and while we're in safari someone else

brought up Brad being at being brad says

why does safari still have separate

search and URL field hate that so much

obviously apple just change this in

safari for OS 10 but it remains the same

in safari for iOS were they don't have a

  unified search bar

and I don't know why that is except i

think it makes more sense on an iOS

  device because you're touching something

you're going for a touchdown target with

your thumb rather than you know if

you're using tabs or the tab key or what

not to get it to kind of navigate around

or if you're using a you know your a

your finger to just navigate around its

it's sort of tedious to switch between

two different two different boxes up top

sort of redundant whereas because you're

touching it you can just kind of know

what you know what you want to hit

whether you want to hit the URL or the

search bar and it's the same thing

because it's you know it's always thumps

what is a good question my and I think

the answer is actually even more simple

than that I think it's because when

you're in the URL field they give you a

  special keyboard that's optimized for

URLs with characters like are all ready

for Ash's and don't have a spacebar you

get a dot-com button him and I think

that's the explanation is that the

advantage of having one is there's a big

trade-off there where they would lose

the you'd only have the normal keyboard

whereas now you have this special you're

entering a URL keyboard which you would

go yeah so that's why I think I OS still

has the to field wouldn't be a bad

reference that makes sense and then you

know I mean as far as a bunch of

preferences they even to add a nigga

stash it in that not just in settings

safari go to put it all the way down in

  settings safari advanced where they've

got the new right developer mode webcam

with the web inspector I put it in there

because the sort of people who really

want that room you know right i would

take people who wouldn't hesitate to go

three levels deep in settings to turn it

on but i think it would be a good time

great preference setting there's a then

  there's the conspiratorial thought that

you know that would lead to more google

  searches well I i see i don't think that

carries any water though because if that

were the case then they would have added

it to the mac version of Safari yeah

right i agree if trying to I think I'm

running out of questions here and i

think we're probably running at a time

but do you see any other good ones

someone lets the MIT rental a stem kinda

curious to hear our thoughts about the

rift in ios6 UI elements you know

  between disposer drifted Apple between

the forestall and maybe Johnny I've or

whoever it is but basically with all the

scheme morphix stuff i think is what

he's referring to so some of the you

know the the the felt in in Game Center

and in that kind of thing

yeah the contentious theory on that is

that there's two camps inside Apple that

are sort of a pose where's the camp that

likes the sort of non skeuomorphic look

of apps like male safari and even new

updated ones like may music and the app

store and maps maps is another good

example where it's just like this sort

of pure chrome look versus the game

center calendar whatever I think there's

I think there's some merit to that from

what i've heard that there's definitely

people who are opposed to like the

calendar app on the iPad and a mac but I

don't think it's like you know like a

religious war or somebody really wants

to like you know it I know I don't think

  it's like a problem like a like a sign

  of internal division

well I mean it is certain

  it's just I don't know everyone I talked

to doesn't seem to like the you know

either the felt or or any of the the

calendar stuff but Apple still feels

that go with it i mean it is that for

the don't know that that the common

person to feel like you know you're

  replacing your calendar your desk

calendar with up with a version that's

like a digital representation outfit I

actually wonder how much of it and i

don't know i mean i think forestall was

probably a little bit on the

skeuomorphic side but I really think

that the leading proponent of it was

Steve Jobs personally and that you think

it's now that he's you know no longer

  with us i think it's i think it's

starting to go away coming because

  there's anything gone skeuomorphic since

Steve Jobs died i don't think so i think

  everything everybody complains about was

already in place when Jobs was at the

helm right you know you can

it is there anything like passbook we

open it up here it's I think you know

they do pre and passbook though I really

  do

I don't think I'm not working is not

close to it and in general I think like

passbook is probably a good example

where is my passbook and and while we're

talking about passbook you know someone

asked them how it actually works so you

know during the during my demo time

actually had apple send me some some

demo one since know the app for live yet

it's basically you can do it you can do

as far as i understand you can do one of

two things either apps after you you

  know you buy tickets through

ticketmaster and then you get an email

and in the attached to that email is

basically a file which is a passbook

file and you click on it within mail-in

in iOS and then it just instantly loads

and that's what that's what i did it and

it worked you know within one second it

was a it was loaded into my passbook and

so that seems like a really great thing

I worry a little bit about right now i

have to give the eight different passes

in this thing and it's you know it's

  getting a little crowded i don't know

how they deal with if you have a lot of

these things like so if you have a

starbucks card which is going to be kind

of an evergreen thing apparently that

you have in your in your wallet or or

the Starwood kind of one vs like a movie

  too

which will go away after a time I don't

know how they deal with having so many

of those in there but you know i'm

curious to see how passbook gets adopted

they have a great group of partners it

looks like you know that i saw that a

eventbrite is going to be using it and

then obviously the ones that we've

already seen as the examples of a lot of

airlines using it to get pastor all

  those kinds of things

majorly but I want to leave them MLB now

actually based only like three ballparks

right now but I mean I presumably that's

the sort of thing that might be tough to

roll-out midseason so maybe by next year

we'll have a lot more a lot more the

teams involved but you can buy tickets

in the app and it led i forget which

three ballparks it is but the tickets

you can put them right in your passbook

and then you know just show up at the

gate in the scandium someone asked and i

don't have this open and i think i just

saw it in passing I think they're asking

us that actually for the show like if I

don't know the answer to this and I

don't know if you will either but if you

need some sort of special barcode

scanner to be able to do it through the

iphone screen i think that there is

something to this question because I

think that I have gone to the airport

before and had it on the you know had a

ticket kinda just through the web

browser open to be scanned and it was

either QR code or barcode and they

couldn't scan it for some reason with a

regular bar code reader they needed a

special kind of barcode reader to be

able to do it i don't know if that's

because the pint glass if there's a

reflection problem or or whatever I

don't know if that's been fixed or not

have you heard anything about that now I

haven't heard anything about that i

thought that those yes scanners were

  just like a diamond doesn't that they're

  just red lasers

  I don't know I don't know anything about

it maybe I'm maybe I'm remembering it

incorrectly but I think someone did ask

a question along these lines and it made

me remember back to this one time when I

just couldn't you know they could not

scan my thing because they didn't have

the correct scanner for it and who knows

maybe they had to our code scanner and

  they needed a barcode scanner i don't

know maybe something as simple as that

but there might there may have been

something to the fact that you needed

special scanner and I don't know if

  that's true or not

unfortunately we don't have an answer

but yeah overall I think there's also

talk that you can also download one of

the apps like the MLB app and those

could easily pass the the two

gets right into your passbook rather

than doing it over email and they

actually when you when you click on the

things themselves they all have these

little info in the bottom right-hand

corner things where you can click on it

they can't bunch of them have different

lockscreen Dana toggles and and the

ability to kind of location and those

  yeah I'm with you though I'm I'm i I'm

optimistic but I'm curious as weather

like six months from now it's gonna be

one of those things were all of us have

passbook on our first screen and we've

all got like a thing in there too and

that's where all of our airline tickets

are going or his passbook going to turn

into one of those apps that did stash

into a folder and wish they would just

let you deliver right right and I know

you know there's a lot of the country

developers out there who are working on

kinda loyalty card aggregators and those

types of things who are working out not

integrating within passbooks oh yeah but

I do you know I just remember from WTC I

was one of the sessions I want to and it

really does seem like a very clever

system because it's very simple i mean

it's it really not a lot of work to hook

up to and yes and it does seem like they

thought it through very much so it's not

like a boil the ocean plan like the

whole NFC thing where involves well and

then millions of retailers will install

this hardware that perfect to our system

it's you know really largely based on

hooking up to these things at all these

retailers and gates at the airport

already have right is a huge difference

and that you know and the just doing it

smart with technology where with a few

cross into a certain geofence it will

pop up you know the airline ticket so

it's they're ready to go for you or and

it's on the lock screen even so you

don't have to actually dig through

anything to find it you know i think

that that's they make it pretty

compelling case for why like all the

airlines you get on board with this and

yeah I hope they do is a quick question

from spearheads he asked if you can

split the keyboard when you're in

landscape no you cannot and I don't I

wouldn't it was not enough for import I

  don't think so

I don't know that that's it and to show

mg Siegler thanks for thanks for being

  here
