Roderick on the Line

Ep. 234: "Boo Hoo Hoo"

  [Music] [TS]

hello and I John I'm Merlin has gone [TS]

  it's going pretty good [TS]

  happy Monday happy Monday [TS]

hmm well I wish that I had beds here to [TS]

really make this a happy monday [TS]

yeah hype man everybody's hype man right [TS]

  that's right [TS]

uh-huh uh-huh is the front outside frame [TS]

  in the trunk ride [TS]

yes is that happy mondays lineup for the [TS]

wheels big what I know that I don't know [TS]

about o.o is that the that's the vine [TS]

  lady [TS]

yeah that's the binary I'm sorry to [TS]

bring her back man if you know other [TS]

great things i should know about before [TS]

they're going away let me know about [TS]

them ok i will how about uh American [TS]

democracy wall clock mike del Morro [TS]

  tired I'll I'm I'm where I'm wearing [TS]

  noise-canceling headphones which ipad [TS]

before probably can't hear anything I'm [TS]

saying it's wrong it's all I can hear is [TS]

what you're saying get any other sort of [TS]

background noise and boys it [TS]

disconcerting it's disorienting just a [TS]

you know not to go too far behind the [TS]

wizard curtain but you are you're [TS]

broadcasting remotely from ya family's [TS]

in southern california i'm in i'm in [TS]

southern sunny Southern California where [TS]

it is pouring rain and and so I i always [TS]

try and forget one thing you know you [TS]

know me and no excuse me out one and [TS]

only one thing I try to forget one key [TS]

  thing I don't want I don't want to [TS]

forget multiple things because that [TS]

would seem like I was such as careless [TS]

yeah careless are unprepared didn't know [TS]

what you'd like to keep it Lively [TS]

yeah so a lot of times we all forget is [TS]

my power cord this time I forgot my [TS]

headphones sometimes I forget just the [TS]

simple like USB cable that goes between [TS]

  things [TS]

but yeah so anyway I'm borrowing these [TS]

  noise-cancelling headphones and its [TS]

really either as far as i know they're [TS]

like ambulances going by right here in [TS]

the room and I wouldn't be able to hear [TS]

because the noise has been cancelled [TS]

you sound down a thoughtful son not [TS]

muted would be a term of art but you [TS]

sound very circumspect is not wise [TS]

thank you for saying that i'm i'm [TS]

debating about how to reply to someone [TS]

on ebay 0000 it's what's going on you [TS]

something troubling happen happen i've [TS]

had a couple of you know I I shouldn't [TS]

be on ebay and you know [TS]

nope don't belong there is it's a [TS]

variety of reasons that it is not an [TS]

ideal use of your time and attention [TS]

know and the thing is it's not my [TS]

culture you know I don't understand the [TS]

cultural mores there and I'm I'm an [TS]

interloper i'ma time traipsing through a [TS]

very complicated social environment and [TS]

so a couple of things have happened [TS]

right there was one time I ordered two [TS]

things from a person and ask them to [TS]

combine them in one package ever tell [TS]

you about this mm I know this is [TS]

probably too fascinating for this show [TS]

but i'm going to dive into it anyway [TS]

wanted to combine two things in one [TS]

package and they sent me an email back [TS]

that said I set you a revised invoice [TS]

and so I looked in my email and there [TS]

was a something from this person that [TS]

said pay here and i click on the button [TS]

and I paid for one item plus the [TS]

associated shipping of that one item and [TS]

then I wrote him back and said well i [TS]

paid for the one item can you send me [TS]

the revised and they said well i did [TS]

send you it's in your email and I said [TS]

and I wasn't clear like [TS]

exactly what they were getting at but [TS]

then after two exchanges they said well [TS]

I'm done dealing with this and hadn't [TS]

helped me at all and i ended up having [TS]

to pay for both items and ten dollars [TS]

each shipping for two things that would [TS]

fit into a single envelope and so then [TS]

when it was time to give the the [TS]

feedback the stars if you will a boy I [TS]

wanted to give them zero stars for the [TS]

shipping because they had done nothing [TS]

they'd been not only had they not help [TS]

me but they've been like really rude but [TS]

I noticed that they had 99 percent [TS]

approval rating so I thought you know is [TS]

  this something about me [TS]

mm so again is your problem you're into [TS]

living with the mores yeah I didn't know [TS]

what might look at what I've done wrong [TS]

so I'm going back and was like hey I [TS]

don't know about this i don't know what [TS]

happened i tried to be nice i was just [TS]

like you could put both of these in one [TS]

envelope and only charged me 10 instead [TS]

of twenty bucks no reply as does it [TS]

delhi so he's done with it after two [TS]

emails because he'd sent me a revised [TS]

invoice he said which I explained to her [TS]

you got the revised invoice he's done it [TS]

so it wasn't revised it was just like [TS]

here's my revised invoice fuck you my [TS]

revised invoice says fuck you so but I [TS]

didn't want to leave zero stars because [TS]

i actually like went to leave negative [TS]

feedback and ebay threw up a like a sign [TS]

like are you sure you want to leave [TS]

negative feedback you should try and [TS]

resolve this with the person this is a [TS]

  serious matter [TS]

yeah I was like a shit ok and then I [TS]

figured like he's at five thousand [TS]

transactions he's got 99 percent [TS]

positive how you're dating yourself [TS]

  you're the weirdo [TS]

well yeah and not only that but my [TS]

rating isn't going to affect my brother [TS]

zero stars is going to affect his rating [TS]

but what if he retaliates [TS]

I don't even know if they can retaliate [TS]

but what if he gives me zero stars [TS]

I don't have that many transactions his [TS]

0-star you get a five-star blowback he [TS]

hasn't got to keep our phony baloney [TS]

puffed-up system of useless ratings [TS]

going that if you have screwed things up [TS]

with zero stars but yeah I don't even [TS]

know what I'm doing I'm just something [TS]

like guy like you know bounding in with [TS]

a bullet a bearskin code arm and I'm [TS]

like zero stars and they're like you [TS]

want to c 0 stars bush and then I'm like [TS]

and then all of his all the people that [TS]

wears like satin jackets with his gang [TS]

name on it all 0 starring me [TS]

ya know it's like an episode of [TS]

blackness totally black mirror yeah so I [TS]

didn't know what to do so I was like I [TS]

gotta just random guy got to think about [TS]

it and and I still haven't acted well [TS]

then a couple of times i ordered stuff [TS]

in our lives or not you know that's the [TS]

thing you're not ordering stuff you have [TS]

delayed at night thing goes by I'm like [TS]

help it on that shirt you know [TS]

30 bucks here a bit on that POW a bit on [TS]

it and then it's like you won a [TS]

thirty-dollar thing but it's fifty [TS]

dollars shipping on come on [TS]

because the thing is actually in kuala [TS]

  lumpur kawal alone [TS]

work and you know how water times it in [TS]

ebay if something's in England the the [TS]

amount of money will be in italics [TS]

because you know its foreign if it's in [TS]

canadia it'll be an italic but somehow [TS]

you can sell a thing in kuala lumpur but [TS]

if you put in american dollars [TS]

  [Music] [TS]

it just comes just so I'm up I'm bidding [TS]

on this son-of-a-bitch but now it's now [TS]

I 1 and I look at the shipping that's [TS]

more than what i paid for the thing and [TS]

and I want there to be a thing on ebay [TS]

where I can be like whoa whoa you didn't [TS]

say I didn't see that it was a flaw [TS]

lumpur if there's no there's no like [TS]

whoa whoa button right right right i [TS]

  already committed [TS]

yeah he's actually value sign a contract [TS]

I signed a binding contract with these [TS]

like multi-star people so one time I [TS]

paid it the other this most recent time [TS]

I you know I paid the shipping it takes [TS]

a month to ship their from kuala lumpur [TS]

because they put it into like a raft i [TS]

just checked on ebay today and they said [TS]

oh yeah we delivered that package from [TS]

paul and perform days ago and we handed [TS]

it to an individual that's what the [TS]

  signs [TS]

well you know let's be true there's no [TS]

individual at my house that they could [TS]

have handed it to my neighbors wouldn't [TS]

pick I don't want Randy to have it [TS]

this is this is a real thistle here's [TS]

the latest problem yeah here's the thing [TS]

i'm trying to solve a guy sell sold me a [TS]

Fame and when I got it it had a big x [TS]

over he had documented some damage on on [TS]

the item but when i got it at a big X in [TS]

sharpie over the tag of the item over [TS]

the that tag you know like the little [TS]

UPC scanner code know the brand name [TS]

Oh which I recognized as an article of [TS]

  apparel [TS]

yes it is oh so it's like a cutout a [TS]

remainder exactly it's a factory second [TS]

but he had failed to document that la [TS]

germany and so I just so this is another [TS]

one of these like in ninety-eight [TS]

percent prove reading so i stood on it [TS]

for a couple of weeks and then I was [TS]

sitting and I was thinking about this [TS]

like I gotta give the Oh what it was was [TS]

i had bought something else obviously I [TS]

have to have a problem here and and the [TS]

other person that I bought something [TS]

from was sending me emails like 3a week [TS]

saying hey I noticed you haven't given [TS]

me any feedback yet would you please go [TS]

on and give me some feedback about the [TS]

thing that you bought from me that I [TS]

  sent you [TS]

I was like yeah I bought it from you [TS]

send it to me and leaving any feedback [TS]

sorry but I don't and he's did this [TS]

person is just like really really [TS]

desperate present it feels like it even [TS]

happens on amazon like if you buy [TS]

something through what turns out to be a [TS]

third party you know marketplace vendor [TS]

you get this surfeit of emails about how [TS]

they hope you really have your ramekins [TS]

and how this feels like it's just shy of [TS]

not paying to not go and give a [TS]

five-star review that is what it feels [TS]

like this person was like I don't like [TS]

that system John that's not a good [TS]

system they weren't they weren't hurt [TS]

they were like offended and starting to [TS]

get rude about it i bought a thing from [TS]

you for $90 at it's been a week and a [TS]

half and I didn't give me any feedback [TS]

and it's just really like live from [TS]

older time maybe when we were kids we [TS]

always want to thank you note anything [TS]

like no matter what somebody gave you [TS]

could just be bullshit that the did not [TS]

make your life better you still have to [TS]

write a thank you note it seems [TS]

analogous here where it's like how you [TS]

know I mean obviously the stakes are [TS]

higher in the one case grandma's going [TS]

to get her feelings hurt but in this [TS]

case these these jackals can't keep up [TS]

to five star rating if you weren't there [TS]

pumping mom and well the thing is like [TS]

sometimes you order something like a [TS]

craft or something that someone clearly [TS]

found in a thrift store and manage to [TS]

sell for fifteen dollars and they send [TS]

you a little note they send your little [TS]

handwritten note a little boy toy ly [TS]

with some writing on it in your bag like [TS]

hey thanks a lot hope you enjoyed thing [TS]

but this one item that the person was [TS]

passing me about was just a thing they [TS]

  bought a [TS]

at a like factory second sale and then [TS]

sent to me like this there's no [TS]

personality to it it's not something [TS]

cute just like they bought in for your [TS]

  windbreaker [TS]

yeah they wanted for $90 sold to me for [TS]

ninety-four dollars and what they're [TS]

like where's my feedback so i was on [TS]

there giving this person feedback [TS]

because i was browbeaten into doing it [TS]

and then I looked at this one the the [TS]

person that had sent me the the thing [TS]

with the X on the and i went back and [TS]

looked at the ad no mention of the [TS]

accident and really it's a very [TS]

prominent feature and so I wrote him and [TS]

I said hey you i'm giving them i'm here [TS]

at my hair my office giving everybody [TS]

feedback to him I haven't given you any [TS]

because you know I've been kind of likes [TS]

that kind of stood on this you sent me [TS]

this thing I mean I got a good price on [TS]

the thing but I wouldn't have bet on it [TS]

if i had seen this because i have a [TS]

policy about factory seconds it's just [TS]

something that gets sticks in my craw [TS]

it's not it's not in this is a nerdy [TS]

comparison but like it's not that [TS]

different from being a book collector [TS]

and unless you were collecting a given [TS]

addition because it contained this an [TS]

error that was rare you would reject [TS]

that you would say no this is crazy like [TS]

this is this is not what it appears to [TS]

be no I'm would buy a magazine with the [TS]

cover cut off it says it's exactly like [TS]

being a book collector and it turns out [TS]

you get it down a tiny fine print says [TS]

all booked up among the Month Club [TS]

oh yeah like it now like RCA records the [TS]

month types that you know that's not a [TS]

collectible first edition that's the [TS]

garbage first edition steerage you know [TS]

so i write him and he writes back and he [TS]

goes oh I you know I wondered what that [TS]

was but I didn't even know what it meant [TS]

maybe it means the article of clothing a [TS]

straightedge yeah right or maybe it [TS]

means that somebody soda crew grand into [TS]

the lining of it but i doubt it [TS]

it seems like when you're identifying [TS]

features of a thing and the tag is like [TS]

very visible in it and it has a huge X [TS]

through it anyway so I running backs [TS]

like okay I accept that explanation but [TS]

you know I do feel like I [TS]

a little bit cheated and he's like well [TS]

how can I he said i'll refund the [TS]

purchase price and I was like why would [TS]

she buy what she meant like send it back [TS]

  to me [TS]

mm I was like well you know I don't want [TS]

to go all that a whole hog on it a but [TS]

you know like I don't give me no give me [TS]

twenty bucks off we go back and forth as [TS]

this is i'm just in time [TS]

this is it is in more interesting than I [TS]

expected but this is this is a taking a [TS]

lot of time to describe the general no I [TS]

actually enact this whole no no no i'm [TS]

not i'm not being matter i'm saying like [TS]

first of all if everything goes [TS]

flawlessly on ebay you're spending too [TS]

much time on ebay and now in addition to [TS]

that the post-mortem that you have to [TS]

perform on your purchases is mental [TS]

yes this is a crazy use of your time yes [TS]

it is and your but you are aware of that [TS]

  right but who knows [TS]

ok cool knows you're going out are we [TS]

talking to still work shopping who's [TS]

talking to me that's really a lot i'm [TS]

  talking to me [TS]

mm-hmm so I so those holds the [TS]

respondents anyway so then he says I'm [TS]

in the hospital I can't talk right now [TS]

because I'm zba writing everyone on the [TS]

other every single person on the other [TS]

end of the line was getting his dialysis [TS]

he's doing follow-ups and all the people [TS]

who have not started yet [TS]

oh no he's he said he said I'm sorry I [TS]

have to interrupt this conversation [TS]

because i have to go to the hospital [TS]

like he wasn't talking to me initially [TS]

from the hospital but there's like three [TS]

days that we that wasn't interrupted [TS]

time because he was in the hospital then [TS]

we got back and I had to be like oh are [TS]

you okay i'm worried about you and he's [TS]

like no I'm fine now thanks anyway let's [TS]

get back to this back-and-forth [TS]

back-and-forth and then eventually he [TS]

says Oh actually you know what [TS]

ebay terms of service are that since you [TS]

mentioned feedback that i cannot refund [TS]

you any money because that is extortion [TS]

you didn't know it you're on [TS]

double-secret probation the whole time I [TS]

had that's right i had no I was just and [TS]

then I was like oh [TS]

well that makes sense right what you got [TS]

what do you do now big shot [TS]

yeah of service feedback like eBay is [TS]

gonna be baby is gonna do a Google here [TS]

and there reading our emails yeah [TS]

without us even knowing sure they're [TS]

they're born an uber and they know where [TS]

we are even when we're not using their [TS]

app they're sending you a final letter [TS]

that you're not allowed to receive yeah [TS]

  that's exactly right [TS]

they're filing an injunction and they're [TS]

gonna in jumped me because I mentioned [TS]

feedback and now I'm extorting this [TS]

twenty dollars out of this kind of [TS]

system they got so so he writes me back [TS]

and says you know student same cherry [TS]

language he says well why don't we just [TS]

leave it the way it is [TS]

yeah maybe we can all agree and cheese [TS]

yeah and i wrote back there's like the [TS]

oh you mean leave it the way it is where [TS]

you like failed to tell me what the [TS]

thing was that you were selling me and [TS]

now you know now I've got a little bit [TS]

  of Justice going here [TS]

ok little got my justice ackles it's at [TS]

that point you just walked away right [TS]

well no so that at that point right [TS]

before you called I was composing and [TS]

justice based email to him that was [TS]

going to set this record straight and [TS]

the ppl was BB was reading it over his [TS]

shoulder then they were going to know to [TS]

how things were going to be but but [TS]

mercifully you interrupted me with your [TS]

call man and i haven't sent the email [TS]

yet you know and it's like so far [TS]

there's been a lot he died talk with [TS]

between us we've probably spent 12 [TS]

  emails on come on [TS]

so for the twenty dollars right I'm [TS]

getting pretty good value that's like [TS]

that's you know that's a dollar and [TS]

change per email you explore principle [TS]

here but the total amount that you are [TS]

out including shipping is how much [TS]

hundred dollars no okay so twenty [TS]

dollars is twenty percent yeah but not a [TS]

lot of percent yeah yeah yeah [TS]

  I'm so glad I don't have a surpassing [TS]

number of transactions like that in my [TS]

  life [TS]

mhm you know maybe not bail in general [TS]

I'm i mean like specifically i think one [TS]

of the things when you look at when you [TS]

look at these different I'm really [TS]

avoiding the word community because I [TS]

think that's not the right word for this [TS]

  but whether it's a ride-sharing service [TS]

grocery delivery you at sea [TS]

ebay where you are on some level you may [TS]

be dealing with a person but like what [TS]

if so if i go to safeway and I by half a [TS]

gallon of milk like that's that's a [TS]

really clear transaction I get a little [TS]

receipt for it and like how how well the [TS]

cashier did does not factor that heavily [TS]

into the purchase as long as it's not [TS]

rancid i take it home for you know as [TS]

long as they didn't like grossly mr. [TS]

charge me but they did grossly mr. [TS]

charged me I going to say hey look this [TS]

is an error he accidentally charged me [TS]

twice for this and go hey no problem [TS]

take it off right there's there's so [TS]

  much hubris personality humanity [TS]

involved in buying a jacket online from [TS]

  somebody it's it's so strange i get i [TS]

mean like i say like I i well I do a lot [TS]

of amazon shopping and I tend to prefer [TS]

buying things directly from amazon not [TS]

least because you get the prime shipping [TS]

right so like I get a little psychic i [TS]

I've seen what you're talking about [TS]

here's a set of fancy pencils and if you [TS]

click the wrong link on the wrong buyer [TS]

you're getting fancy pencils that are [TS]

going to be $22 and it's thirty dollars [TS]

shipping know you like you gotta be [TS]

careful it's in parentheses it's not [TS]

necessarily kuala lumpur but you really [TS]

do want to watch that but then I don't [TS]

randomly finally get some USB cable and [TS]

i get done by this by some third party [TS]

seller who sends this generic email [TS]

obviously through some kind of CMS [TS]

that's like bugging me for CMS content [TS]

management system I don't know that [TS]

amazon zone system or some kind of [TS]

third-party thing but they all look the [TS]

same and it's like hey I hope you [TS]

enjoyed your candle that smells like a [TS]

new macintosh computer make sure to go [TS]

in and give us a five-star review of [TS]

Beatle ed ed and so you know you know [TS]

how like in and out burger has a secret [TS]

menu and they're always about what's not [TS]

  secret anymore [TS]

amazon word on the street is that amazon [TS]

has a secret menu to know any more about [TS]

  it [TS]

well for example and change the topic [TS]

because it is actually on topic but for [TS]

example if as in my case with all due [TS]

respect to the united states postal [TS]

system you know my history but the post [TS]

office and yes my deliveries are just I [TS]

mean Donald Trump should have a tweet [TS]

about about the disaster the flaming [TS]

inner city that is my history with just [TS]

think just not appearing at the house [TS]

suppose there's a secret menu where he [TS]

know the NOC you can contact amazon and [TS]

ask them to at the very least I guess [TS]

changed the cascade of how deliveries [TS]

are made to always put the postal [TS]

service at the bottom but I've heard [TS]

noises cascade well you know how it [TS]

works like it used to be everything was [TS]

ups and it was awesome right in [TS]

yes you you have to know yeah i do not [TS]

know how it works like at all why I i [TS]

was wondering about this before is [TS]

everything to me you won't just bring it [TS]

comes from three different services what [TS]

happened it used to be ups and when [TS]

everything work I don't want it straight [TS]

but I'm the cascade is something that [TS]

I'm imagining and cascading i'm [TS]

referring here to a term they use in [TS]

doesn't matter but cascading is this [TS]

idea that there's this this default way [TS]

that things will happen unless for some [TS]

reason that one is not optimal or is not [TS]

available in which case it falls back to [TS]

the second choice etcetera etcetera are [TS]

imagine that amazon has optimized this [TS]

within an inch of its life to where I [TS]

think one I don't know the exact history [TS]

i think one thing that happened was yes [TS]

they used to use UPS for everything and [TS]

it was the glory days like it has worked [TS]

everything was fine but from my point of [TS]

view as a consumer I don't you know I [TS]

don't have a dog in this fight but you [TS]

know it really worked and the floor [TS]

dirty brown trucks coming around Lord [TS]

days and then I think they cut some kind [TS]

of a deal with the failing US postal [TS]

system where I guess they got a special [TS]

deal plus things like sunday delivery [TS]

which nobody else was doing something [TS]

delivered but you know there's this [TS]

thing that happens if your name is on [TS]

  user where at [TS]

you don't track my deliveries I'm a [TS]

tracker and i'll see like oh good [TS]

UPS like we know or like FedEx leaving [TS]

memphis you like ah awesome and you see [TS]

that dreaded like transferred to carrier [TS]

facility and you're like oh I think that [TS]

means people that means it is now into [TS]

the leaky ma of the usps and we just [TS]

don't know if it'll show up common [TS]

service all I learn more about this [TS]

report back on the service of saying one [TS]

supposed secret many thing you can do is [TS]

you can contact amazon and tell them [TS]

look I don't want things delivered by [TS]

postal service anymore sir possibly i'm [TS]

so there's true but that's what there's [TS]

like that there's a you have a profile [TS]

that's not visible to you that's [TS]

maintained somewhere in the commands and [TS]

lewd yeah and your profile is alterable [TS]

you're saying by a by a special ops team [TS]

in a windowless room and amazon and if [TS]

you can get to them [TS]

yeah and say listen I want you to change [TS]

my profile I want you to put it I want [TS]

  your gold star [TS]

I want you to give me an extra level of [TS]

access and they can just be like you're [TS]

good customer we like you your name is [TS]

  Merlin man huh [TS]

my my desk mate has heard of you used to [TS]

  be famous [TS]

yeah you're the guy with the wallet what [TS]

happened to shoot yeah okay we'll put [TS]

that gold star and then all of a sudden [TS]

all your troubles go away is another one [TS]

that I've utilized right heard there's a [TS]

secret menu where you can contact amazon [TS]

and say hey I don't want to receive [TS]

these requests for feedback anymore [TS]

wow I did that they took care of it and [TS]

I wasn't getting them anymore until [TS]

recently when I started getting them [TS]

again so it's time to go back in and try [TS]

the secret menu again I at the kuala [TS]

lumpur problem i actually went onto ebay [TS]

and asked a question of the ebay [TS]

community I went on to their message [TS]

  board [TS]

and i asked the question of the ebay [TS]

community and someone replied and said [TS]

if you don't want to see items from [TS]

kuala lampur all you have to do when [TS]

you're searching for items go down to [TS]

this menu screen go over to this menu [TS]

screen pull down this screen and select [TS]

this option and your problems are solved [TS]

it's like well yeah except that i would [TS]

have to do that for each individual [TS]

search that I did it end at four o'clock [TS]

in the morning i'm on there searching [TS]

for Pendleton blankets Hudson Bay [TS]

Company jackets Native Alaskan Parker's [TS]

and all the things that you need you [TS]

know zippo lighters from Adak Island and [TS]

each one of those i have to pull down at [TS]

six men used to get so it also cuts off [TS]

your your supply chain there might be [TS]

stuff we're willing like it could be [TS]

your once you don't know i'm not trying [TS]

to belittle like John right here if [TS]

you've got your white whale if there's [TS]

something that shows up that you've been [TS]

  looking for for years [TS]

that's right it's only available in [TS]

kuala lumpur you not made of stone [TS]

you might consider that I might pay [TS]

fifty dollars shipping if it's the right [TS]

zippo lighter from from you know a tack [TS]

a cat a car cat from sure net and this [TS]

is a sheet of stickers about my daughter [TS]

not realizing that I wouldn't have [TS]

  homework [TS]

yeah well I get so might the first 1i [TS]

  can find here is [TS]

from try searching for your recent order [TS]

this this one says chok Dee 2016 that's [TS]

their username so they their username [TS]

actually has the year 2016 in it which [TS]

seems like a but seems like a dumb way [TS]

to have pretty simplistic approach to [TS]

  your brand [TS]

yeah and also can i call in 1933 but [TS]

then they have 526 feedbacks i guess or [TS]

transactions which is not very many and [TS]

they have a purple star next to them [TS]

which I don't know what that means but I [TS]

know that it's not a gold star em and [TS]

they say and so i bought from them a [TS]

Gurkha leather pouch is a gorgeous on [TS]

  indian sword [TS]

well there saw a Gurkha is a kind of [TS]

  Indian soldier [TS]

mmm that is drawn from was that there is [TS]

  a hindi machete dingus [TS]

well that's their distinctive knife look [TS]

at that thing look at the Gurkha but the [TS]

Gurkhas were like it's called the quarry [TS]

the signature weapon of the Gurkhas yeah [TS]

the girls are up are like a tribe of [TS]

people who are very very good fighters [TS]

and they were enlisted into the British [TS]

Army like during the colonial period as [TS]

like ferocious Special Forces people [TS]

almost too who fought for the British in [TS]

their various colonial wars so [TS]

  interesting [TS]

they're like you know they're kind of [TS]

like the sikhs they are and they're [TS]

Indians but of a separate ilk look with [TS]

a very identifiable sort of set of [TS]

characteristics that in this case where [TS]

were used in the in the wars clone wars [TS]

you'll see the Gurkhas like in world war [TS]

one you'll see them you know fighting in [TS]

the trenches what school would you mind [TS]

  a wallet [TS]

what are you so no it's not a wallet so [TS]

great but Gurkha the the leather goods [TS]

  company [TS]

is a new york company and the legend is [TS]

that there was some guy the new york's [TS]

rich smartypants who was bidding on that [TS]

an auction at Sotheby's and was bidding [TS]

on the complete luggage collection of a [TS]

former officer in the British [TS]

Expeditionary Forces and he had to sell [TS]

  some nice bags [TS]

yeah and he had this beautiful set this [TS]

is many years ago in the seventies you [TS]

have this beautiful set of luggage that [TS]

was kind of like kind of like the bags [TS]

that louie vuitton bags and Kundalini [TS]

express or whatever talking about Marley [TS]

Hodgson back in the early nineteen [TS]

seventies must have been Miz's only shot [TS]

himself in an estate sale in the UK we [TS]

encounter recollection of campaign gear [TS]

once belonging to british commander [TS]

station yes that was oh I see so the jog [TS]

my memory now I that you're familiar [TS]

  with the story [TS]

sure my Hodgson yeah so anyway Marley [TS]

mr. Hodgman we columns he decided to [TS]

reproduce these instead of because he [TS]

lost this auction instead he decided to [TS]

reproduce these bags at in New York City [TS]

and so it was a very fancy line of bags [TS]

and it was one of the first sort of sets [TS]

of bags that were met it was like the [TS]

patina of the used bag was worth more [TS]

than a new bag but then Merlin as so [TS]

often happens in these heritage brands [TS]

at some point in the nineties the [TS]

company was sold to a to an offshore [TS]

  conglomerate 42 holding company [TS]

yeah basically was sold to Mitt Romney [TS]

yeah and being capital and they changed [TS]

it and they started making bags in China [TS]

and they started making garbage bags and [TS]

all the people that care about these [TS]

things which I am embarrassed to say I [TS]

am not one but I'm adjacent right it's a [TS]

cocktail party and I'm standing [TS]

it's a cocktail party at the red line [TS]

you've ever heard the rumors of the [TS]

  disappointed [TS]

sure i'm walking it's the red line in [TS]

wenatchee washington i'm walking through [TS]

  the halls [TS]

i hear ya and look in it's a big [TS]

everybody's got name tags on I poked my [TS]

head in there talking about heritage [TS]

brands i'll put my foot in the room up [TS]

you know maybe I'll take a drink off of [TS]

  which i'm passing tray [TS]

hmm i'll spend the afternoon there let's [TS]

be honest yeah i'll talk to those people [TS]

I want to know what they're all about [TS]

hmm maybe always you're always seeking [TS]

to learn you want to educate yourself [TS]

yeah and maybe I'll take a brochure [TS]

maybe i'll think about filling it out [TS]

yeah anyway then someone and this [TS]

happened to my own beloved filson [TS]

company of three or four different times [TS]

someone bought Gurkha back from being [TS]

capital and restored the glory [TS]

so we're talking about the CBS offender [TS]

exactly right now we're talking about [TS]

were talking about the Japanese strats [TS]

here with all due respect that's exactly [TS]

right we're talking about it it's very [TS]

its characteristic of of the era so yeah [TS]

I mean the thing is you can't just say [TS]

there's this before and after day you [TS]

have to have some clarity about certain [TS]

models certain years produced and their [TS]

cemeteries and subtlety to that you've [TS]

learned by being adjacent there isn't i [TS]

think there are people out there all the [TS]

time who order a Gurkha bag on the [TS]

internet and then they arrived and there [TS]

and it's made in china but they don't [TS]

know it and so they're perfectly happy [TS]

so they think i have a fancy bag that's [TS]

right somewhere buried down inside an [TS]

inside pocket like tucked in the lining [TS]

is a little made-in-china tag but they [TS]

never see it and so the the the spell is [TS]

never broken for them but you know for [TS]

me I'm the type of person that [TS]

immediately goes looking for the tag [TS]

I can't I would be able to sleep at [TS]

night if it sent made in china and I [TS]

would know I'd been rocked and I had an [TS]

inferior thing anyway so i dunno how to [TS]

find good work of idea how to not buy a [TS]

garbage bag and so i bought this [TS]

  that's a nice little pouch it's not a [TS]

  purse pouch [TS]

it's not a wallet because it's the size [TS]

of a piece of you know you can put like [TS]

a notebook in it it's like a pouch [TS]

definitely not a person but not a person [TS]

it's a package folio yeah let's call it [TS]

a folio um I discovered not very long [TS]

ago that instead of packing my suitcases [TS]

with by just rolling up my clothes and [TS]

packing them in the suitcase that if I [TS]

rolled up my clothes and pack them in a [TS]

pouch and then packed the pouch in my [TS]

  suitcase [TS]

it gave me more gratification so I this [TS]

is this huge for me i know i'm on purim [TS]

  bags and bags [TS]

I've got it I've don't done that one is [TS]

not Columbia but one of those companies [TS]

makes those bags and I gotta bolt goes [TS]

  eagle creek [TS]

yeah and so ya know for me everything [TS]

you to me the idea of putting your [TS]

  clothes directly into suitcases [TS]

monstrous yeah I use like five or six [TS]

different bags for all the different [TS]

constituent parts and I've got down to [TS]

it down to a science at this point let's [TS]

be honest but at some point along the [TS]

way you do have it down to a science [TS]

I've seen in action but I decided at a [TS]

certain point that I was no longer going [TS]

to use nylon 0 and so little reason [TS]

no just because because dollars in [TS]

arbitrary aesthetic not arbitrary but a [TS]

  personal aesthetic decision [TS]

yeah as I because i have so much free [TS]

time where my mind doesn't have enough [TS]

to occupy it which is not true i'm [TS]

actually carving time away any projects [TS]

to think about this but i decided that [TS]

all the bat all the bags were going to [TS]

be made out of either jute or hemp or a [TS]

email like woven grass and attended like [TS]

you get a bamboo bag or wall know and [TS]

all the always be kind of fiber you have [TS]

  financed a Noah's Ark there's there [TS]

should be something there that's organic [TS]

the in the way it's creating your [TS]

  clothes in a group [TS]

right or like sail cloth canvas [TS]

that's nice a-and then leather right so [TS]

so now i'm carrying these leather i'm [TS]

turning my socks and underwear crammed [TS]

into a leather pouch inside my canvas [TS]

and leather and brass bag punish male [TS]

and the whole that's right it was gonna [TS]

be sleeping with the Native American [TS]

soon there was the best of times it was [TS]

i'm looking to my Pocahontas who isn't [TS]

that's right perhaps but what got you in [TS]

a minute but the bag and now weighs [TS]

  about 60 parents [TS]

whereas if I had it all in you know [TS]

nylon ripstop if I was made in china it [TS]

would be half the price would be half [TS]

the way to be 30 pounds probably i'm [TS]

carrying around all this extra brass and [TS]

leather and I don't even know why you're [TS]

probably steampunk look I'm i am outside [TS]

much Circuit cases with gears and [TS]

whistles yeah yeah I don't know what I'm [TS]

trying to do but I'm gonna take you get [TS]

a bespoke leather goggle case when I but [TS]

when i pull up into a hotel and I and [TS]

you know I throw my bag down and it's [TS]

full of all these other bags and inside [TS]

those banks are little bags none of them [TS]

  purses [TS]

um you know then when then down at the [TS]

very bottom there's like a sow's ear [TS]

with a pair of couplings and it's I feel [TS]

like I really living mm it's believe [TS]

this you know let here so anyway here I [TS]

am at anyway so chalky 2016 wants me as [TS]

gender & and he or she [TS]

Ryan's could you please leave this is [TS]

there's no pretense of like I'm I'm [TS]

hoping you enjoyed your product just one [TS]

sentence could you please leave me [TS]

positive feedback when you get a chance [TS]

? and then second sentence [TS]

Thank You period not even thank you ! a [TS]

chilled you know you'd expect a little [TS]

bit of an exclamation point there if [TS]

you're if you're gonna but wait i'm [TS]

  going back here [TS]

Chucky has sent me multiple emails the [TS]

first one was just confirming you [TS]

receive the item i sent if so I would [TS]

  appreciate receiving positive feedback [TS]

  when you chance [TS]

happy new year again no explanation [TS]

happy new year period happy new year [TS]

what kind of monster is this a be your [TS]

period you're right below 90 years going [TS]

obviously very interested in how you're [TS]

doing well wait a minute now between the [TS]

time they sent me that first email the [TS]

first email they had 518 purple stars [TS]

then the second email they sent they [TS]

still at 518 purple stars but now the [TS]

most recent one they have 526 purple [TS]

  stars [TS]

hmm so it seems to be working right [TS]

they've got they've gotten eight more [TS]

purple stars just in the time between [TS]

the two emails something you get from a [TS]

german sex worker purple star purple [TS]

  star [TS]

yeah um what's the purple from from eyes [TS]

  wide shut [TS]

what is the purple commentate is busy [TS]

bay right this is the problem I don't [TS]

knowwe don't know what sickens me [TS]

okay um I'm not enough in this culture [TS]

that I can decipher the curious [TS]

languages star is shorthand to let you [TS]

know the number of ratings that person [TS]

  is received [TS]

yeah yellow blue turquoise purple red [TS]

green purple as you can probably guess [TS]

500 999 they're working on the red star [TS]

ok just bumped up they just bumped up to [TS]

purple because they were 518 right there [TS]

now they're going for the green belt now [TS]

you get ready 2002a 1499 you get red [TS]

oh they know then you get shooting stars [TS]

John you should look at this this is a [TS]

lot like your interest in what they call [TS]

that the the generals have on their [TS]

chests the ham salad salad [TS]

this is a yellow shooting star that's [TS]

10k 2499 turquoise purple red green if [TS]

you get over a million you get a silver [TS]

  shooting star [TS]

well a million transactions number of [TS]

  ratings a million ratings [TS]

mhm whoa whoa wait that somebody five [TS]

stars does that mean that's 5 rating [TS]

no no no no I think that means i think [TS]

  that's a rating [TS]

what that would mean you'd have a [TS]

million transactions at least tell me [TS]

how you do that I don't see how you [TS]

could have a million transactions that's [TS]

hmm i don't know i'm just here on ebay [TS]

page for feedback score stars and your [TS]

  reputation [TS]

oh there they just come right out and [TS]

  say it [TS]

he was selling ratings you know people [TS]

used to commit suicide because they [TS]

because their reputation had suffered a [TS]

thing of it I bet they still do [TS]

oh yeah yeah i mean they used to doing [TS]

more should be here you go here you go [TS]

improved detailed seller ratings item is [TS]

the item as described how was the [TS]

communication the shipping time and then [TS]

the shipping and handling charges i [TS]

  think i don't know i'm i'm not a need a [TS]

lawyer but I think you have a lot of [TS]

grounds on which to call these people on [TS]

  the carpet [TS]

yeah i know but what what they're not at [TS]

what they're not telling you is to those [TS]

people then this is the uber rating this [TS]

is where the prisoner's dilemma part now [TS]

yeah with this game looks like guys oh [TS]

  did they are they [TS]

withholding their rating until I write [TS]

my writing and then they're going to [TS]

give me a sec a pal [TS]

yeah when they give you the paypal [TS]

giving your smaller number of [TS]

  transactions that's a hard kapow that's [TS]

good that's gonna do you hard that's [TS]

just one John I don't want to bear that [TS]

insult to my reputation my ebay its [TS]

reputation Merlin yeah yeah yeah no I [TS]

let me but let me take a look at my ebay [TS]

account and i'll tell you what my [TS]

reputation is ok thank you I knew you [TS]

wanted I knew you wanted to hear it yeah [TS]

i got a lot on my mind [TS]

let me see here ok so aku boy [TS]

this doesn't look good oh no well I have [TS]

a blue star blue stand i have 60 [TS]

transaction so I've actually got more [TS]

than rooster sales rooster sales who [TS]

don't know he has 64 that 756 1599 get [TS]

blue starts the second the second lowest [TS]

  level [TS]

well it's no no it's not like i say [TS]

level I mean it's like experience points [TS]

in D&D you know you play more you get [TS]

more points about some of these boots [TS]

  this says [TS]

I have a hundred percent positive [TS]

feedback what I saw a little difficult [TS]

to believe it says so right there [TS]

quid pro quo clarice what a weird system [TS]

this says I have a hundred and [TS]

eighty-six followers who are these [TS]

  people [TS]

I can tell you you made a big show this [TS]

I don't know seven or eight years ago [TS]

about how you're going to sell [TS]

everything you have on ebay and we [TS]

talked about whether you should have [TS]

museum should there be like a curated [TS]

like pamphlet for it and use you made a [TS]

big thing on here about how you're gonna [TS]

go on ebay you're starting an entire [TS]

store on ebay you're selling everything [TS]

to the right people and and yes people [TS]

to follow you on ebay because that's not [TS]

where you would be doing it [TS]

  no I didn't I didn't tell anybody what [TS]

my BB handle was quite figured it out [TS]

  what it will [TS]

how did you figure it out I think you [TS]

can search on somebody's name i'm [TS]

guessing i don't want to have people [TS]

triangulating here but that's why you [TS]

get the followers people are excited [TS]

they're dying to find out like are you [TS]

gonna sell you know which panties and [TS]

  whatnot [TS]

icic there are a lot you know what I've [TS]

got a lot of eggs [TS]

was there a lot of people it was the [TS]

  equivalent of an egg [TS]

it's just a just a shadowy cameo of a of [TS]

a person's head and shoulders into [TS]

shopping back and frankly I have to say [TS]

the shadowy cameo appears to be a [TS]

short-haired person which seems a little [TS]

  bit [TS]

gender normative em but button i have a [TS]

lot of eggs here right people that have [TS]

never put in any kind of starting [TS]

account just so they could follow you on [TS]

  this important social network [TS]

oh but wait here's the problem i'm an [TS]

egg to she's no I know that you were [TS]

supposed to put a picture and it's [TS]

coming from inside the ebay picture up [TS]

  there too sweet [TS]

all right now let me i'm just going to [TS]

say this right now yeah i'm going to [TS]

tell everybody my ebay because now [TS]

well no showers every other program no [TS]

now I realize that if you have a hundred [TS]

and eighty-six followers that you could [TS]

have liked more than that boy [TS]

and he's going started out with the [TS]

feeling that maybe you were having [TS]

realization you were spending too much [TS]

time on things related to ebay didn't [TS]

feel like this gets us closer that [TS]

direction or a different way [TS]

well so there's never one followers on [TS]

ebay there is a new is just what you [TS]

  need [TS]

just what you need you need a new [TS]

project alright so I'm just going to [TS]

  drive [TS]

hey guys i am I even handle is Morgan [TS]

rides free Morgan rides free all one [TS]

word all lower case but it but here's [TS]

where here's what the thoughtful because [TS]

I I'm because here i'm going to tell you [TS]

  why [TS]

yeah i deleted twitter from my phone to [TS]

get twitter like sisters hundred percent [TS]

five or six days ago [TS]

oh ok i did some just kind of dawning on [TS]

me now okay I you you put up a [TS]

photograph of me on your Instagram and [TS]

then you retweeted that on your tweeter [TS]

is this before or after that so I got [TS]

lots of really nice remarks on that [TS]

thank you everybody thank you very much [TS]

for your comments on personal appearance [TS]

that's super sweet of you [TS]

oh thanks Josh on i am still on [TS]

Instagram who but and the Instagram [TS]

ports over to the Twitter yeah sure does [TS]

but i'm not using I'm not tweeting and I [TS]

see it's a subtle such a fine line [TS]

  ok I mean I haven't like dynamic I don't [TS]

even know how I would go in and actually [TS]

like delete twitter / from my life i [TS]

don't know how i would do that what I [TS]

log off is that how it happens [TS]

they'd still have the user know on the [TS]

phone i just deleted the app and he also [TS]

just go into settings and you would you [TS]

know delete doesn't don't tell me don't [TS]

tell me how to do it all right I won't [TS]

want to know but I'm but i'm not using [TS]

it and this is really the the first time [TS]

i have said i'm not using this anymore [TS]

in the whole time since i first joined [TS]

it back in whenever 2008 have some and [TS]

so it's really been very complex [TS]

  emotionally complex interesting because [TS]

so well you know I was a regular user [TS]

then I had thoughts in the course of a [TS]

day and I would have a flag those [TS]

thoughts as tweets and most of the time [TS]

I would just immediately pull over to [TS]

the side of the road and tweet if I had [TS]

a tweet if I thought a tweet [TS]

uh-huh or I would you know I would hear [TS]

market as a tweet and then later on in [TS]

the day try to try to remember it and a [TS]

lot of times like be unable to remember [TS]

it as as happens right like I had a [TS]

great tweet but i but I was interacting [TS]

with twitter and have been since 2008 [TS]

almost well yeah nine years and I got my [TS]

news from there I kept in touch with [TS]

people there and I just finally couldn't [TS]

be there anymore and I deleted it and [TS]

for the last several days I've had [TS]

  tweets [TS]

I've thought tweets and there wasn't [TS]

  anywhere to put it [TS]

huh and I just let the I just let the [TS]

tweet go right like if you if you have a [TS]

tweet set it free if it if it comes back [TS]

to you it was yours I heard a recent [TS]

dumb analogy for thinking about [TS]

meditation and mindfulness and the guy [TS]

described it as learning to stand by the [TS]

side of a busy highway without feeling [TS]

the need to get into any of the cars and [TS]

that reminds me a little bit of what [TS]

you're saying is like you're so used to [TS]

jumping into every car that goes by or [TS]

you know every 50th car that goes by [TS]

it's difficult to stop it's like that's [TS]

the way you use it if your interaction [TS]

model if I could you make up a term here [TS]

if the way you think about using that is [TS]

like here's where I jump in its it's [TS]

  very difficult to stop [TS]

it's even difficult to watch if you know [TS]

you you're not going to participate it's [TS]

  weird [TS]

timers whole different thing I'm [TS]

struggling with the analogy just because [TS]

I've stood on the side of many highways [TS]

and haven't ever really felt the desire [TS]

to jump in to a car then you might mean [TS]

more be a better at every 50th car [TS]

his name's Jeff Jeff down Jeff Foxworthy [TS]

Jeff did Jeff danbury he's got the [TS]

puppets the other job Daniel Justin just [TS]

dangle the guy the guy from that day Jim [TS]

Carrey movie is also president all those [TS]

  movies [TS]

yeah puppets you might you might be a [TS]

Buddha you might be reassigned reserve [TS]

asking for the vegan option but when do [TS]

you dare to be productive [TS]

dude I'm so jealous right now of New [TS]

Wave songs i think stand the test of [TS]

time partly inspired by last episode [TS]

just you know i made this is what will [TS]

get back to your to your very long story [TS]

but he be in a minute but I I unless we [TS]

can get a playlist for our program of [TS]

lunch the songs that we prefer to be [TS]

referenced songs we read from the lot [TS]

about music last week that's a nice [TS]

feedback about that and so I i took a [TS]

moment to put together a playlist of [TS]

some of the things we mentioned [TS]

including sister golden hair surprise [TS]

oh I thought you were I thought you were [TS]

saying you were making a play list of [TS]

every song we've ever talked about on [TS]

the program which would be one hell of a [TS]

  place yeah i know that's that's not a [TS]

thing I'm gonna do but i think i can put [TS]

  together a music playlist [TS]

yeah so how do you feel about Adam and [TS]

and adam and the ants are you a trolling [TS]

  me [TS]

ok might understand deliver was my [TS]

favorite song for about three years i [TS]

was about to say have you listened to [TS]

standard liver stand and deliver for any [TS]

time recently yes because yeah because [TS]

yesterday I listened to it on my phone a [TS]

couple of times and then I went and [TS]

listen to lots of Adam and I mean that [TS]

was mine that was my third place choice [TS]

for the atom ant song that i would say [TS]

stood the test of time but I add two [TS]

above it and I finally had to just pick [TS]

one and which was I was torn between I [TS]

think it was a with kings of the wild [TS]

frontier good job here are an hour or [TS]

and music both stand the test of time [TS]

better i think kings of the wild [TS]

frontier I still think Stan deliver is a [TS]

greater pop song it's an old number [TS]

don't know Dana and Eric Holder no [TS]

question but no I went to reach these [TS]

are something like okay echo am I gonna [TS]

go with you know Karen's huh that they [TS]

were really hard because they have a [TS]

bunch of good ones i'm going to cleanse [TS]

i don't wanna just pick the obvious [TS]

songs with I spent a lot of time on adam [TS]

and the ants cuz I like a lot of their [TS]

songs but honestly as much as I love the [TS]

prince charming album a lot of that [TS]

  doesn't hold up [TS]

it's still good but it isn't something [TS]

where you could put this song on it [TS]

isn't like you could was the example I [TS]

gave the other day something like [TS]

overkill or something like give our ted [TS]

leo and the pharmacists cover everybody [TS]

wants to rule the world [TS]

I know it's they were on they were on [TS]

that you know the AV AV Club thing we're [TS]

going to do our song its yeah sure it's [TS]

such a rathole I end up just watching [TS]

dozens of those their cover of everybody [TS]

wants to rule the world is so good so [TS]

that's a song I think exclude great saw [TS]

lightly dated you know production sound [TS]

like that or even something like mad [TS]

  world [TS]

I think you could put that on for [TS]

somebody did today and and they're not [TS]

gonna like turn the nose up at it as [TS]

well you know it stands up [TS]

I don't know if we've never really [TS]

discussed tears for fears on this [TS]

  program [TS]

not that I can remember but there's [TS]

actually help you get back to your ebay [TS]

stuff in a minute but no it's all right [TS]

to mention in passing this is something [TS]

  that I'm working on [TS]

mhm well I am I would just interject to [TS]

say that tears for fears is the classic [TS]

example of a band at the time for me at [TS]

least the keyboard drenched eighties [TS]

production and history onyx vocals and i [TS]

will say i will say they sound [TS]

histrionic because he's a pretentious [TS]

investigates the word potentials he's [TS]

very like post Morrissey but that tears [TS]

for fears record turns out when you [TS]

review it again the the hurting or chair [TS]

such are the big was the NICU along with [TS]

  something picture picture [TS]

um uh there is no moss on it every song [TS]

  is great [TS]

  it's alright it's a great [TS]

album front to back and and you know [TS]

we're at the time I was like garbage but [TS]

then i revisited it and it's like tears [TS]

for fears quality rock group that's so [TS]

interesting I have to go in and race pls [TS]

i got so far i got overkill mad world [TS]

I'm torn on this because I will make [TS]

that I might end up going with six [TS]

months in a leaky boat but for split [TS]

ends I've got something I got you [TS]

of course tomorrow sometimes the bet [TS]

sometimes the best of the most [TS]

well-known song is actually the best [TS]

it's a tremendous song starts tomorrow [TS]

night by she was your time whenever [TS]

  you're on my mind [TS]

marshall crenshaw it now very [TS]

controversial I had to pick a new order [TS]

song and this was very difficult for me [TS]

I just after the order profitable i'm [TS]

still not a hundred percent sure i'm [TS]

going to leave me alone from power [TS]

corruption lies but i would probably [TS]

change girl you want by Devo kids in [TS]

America miii yeah don't go by Yaz king [TS]

of the wild frontier out of control by [TS]

you to look of love by ABC hanging on [TS]

the telephone by blondie that's what I [TS]

  got so far [TS]

look good no that's not no seriously [TS]

dude go back to that know me know it's [TS]

so it's so it's still so and it did the [TS]

production on it is so tight it sounds [TS]

so good Trevor Horn buddy really want [TS]

that comes on sometimes twice a year [TS]

than a store and I just started doing [TS]

bump finally I discovered that the band [TS]

it was really hard you know it's a [TS]

beautiful world is one that can really [TS]

introduced the novice to devo because [TS]

it's not that you it's not too wackadoo [TS]

yeah it's actually like yeah right [TS]

there's no like a distraction you go oh [TS]

that's clever that's one is always in [TS]

the YouTube videos of like wacky covers [TS]

but it's like that's fun as a [TS]

deconstruction of that song but it's not [TS]

like the song craft you getting some of [TS]

their you know people just thought of [TS]

those being this weird but their songs [TS]

  are really good [TS]

yes there's something with their cover [TS]

of satisfaction still boggles me i know [TS]

i know it bobbles I don't understand [TS]

that was like it's like it's like rite [TS]

of spring it's like one of those things [TS]

where it's like this we first hear [TS]

you're like what is this now what do you [TS]

  think [TS]

my youtube choice of out-of-control well [TS]

um you know that's a that's like i mean [TS]

i i've seen why I could have gone with [TS]

the ones that i am out of control is in [TS]

my top 10 favorite youtube songs of when [TS]

they were good i didn't want to go with [TS]

i will follow because that was the first [TS]

hit i was kind of conflicted about glory [TS]

out Gloria could be in there but [TS]

out-of-control to me is like kind of the [TS]

apotheosis of young like spunky to think [TS]

that i think still stands up is the key [TS]

part this is the this is the thing about [TS]

you and me and a few other units are [TS]

getting better and it got a B is a you [TS]

  know everything [TS]

pre joshua tree seems real [TS]

yeah and everything post joshua tree [TS]

seems unreal the Hollywood but like you [TS]

know New Year's Day is how I mean it's [TS]

pretty good it's super good all even [TS]

something like 40 you take something [TS]

like you got your bad i really like a [TS]

  sort of homecoming [TS]

I still might just a fantastic song my [TS]

sister was arguing the other day that u2 [TS]

u2 stadium rock which we which we [TS]

  acknowledge started around around [TS]

well you could say you to invent you [TS]

know with stadium rock from the [TS]

beginning but it is then again she's [TS]

like no no those first two records the [TS]

songwriting is really complicated and it [TS]

got all stripped out and streamlined and [TS]

like simplified later for the big big [TS]

epics but like but the Accords and the [TS]

songs are all really like more [TS]

complicated in boy and warnings really [TS]

that's kind of not how I remember it [TS]

well I remember it all but maybe all the [TS]

control is basically a song i can hear [TS]

this to this day and when I hear out of [TS]

  control [TS]

think about how it starts out good [TS]

didn't contended in bham bham bham you [TS]

know that is that's when you hit the [TS]

three primary harmonics across all the [TS]

  strings on your guitar [TS]

  it was written around [TS]

somebody go check it out if I had these [TS]

three things you start out doing the [TS]

that little yes thing you know you don't [TS]

like round about you go team [TS]

what is that you get 12 is it 12 75 [TS]

right 1275 because bong bong bone so [TS]

  anyway I I'm that's how I started [TS]

playing it anyway I don't have a point [TS]

here i just think that I I'm have to [TS]

pray on that connects guess I question [TS]

you took are tricky trip you visited [TS]

here and give me a cello when you're [TS]

driving arm to to the drop-off point [TS]

what kind of what we listening to where [TS]

you listen we talking or were you [TS]

listening to music or podcasts or public [TS]

radio we listen to on the long drive [TS]

we were talking a and then someone [TS]

remarked that that it where we had not [TS]

listened to a single song on the drive [TS]

and you know so the drive that might [TS]

Miami my road trip partners were my 82 [TS]

year-old mother and my 46 year old [TS]

sister and we rented a merchant's house [TS]

Susan is and we drove to just great [TS]

well yeah actually I don't get much [TS]

chance to say I really like her [TS]

iirc energy is is buoyant please places [TS]

with her point energy yes and she seems [TS]

younger than her tender years but if you [TS]

ever are on the highway with her and you [TS]

get into a confrontation with another [TS]

driver in your oregon who will see that [TS]

almost got a knife to a Susan fight [TS]

yeah that although she is a very boy and [TS]

every once a young seeming woman all 46 [TS]

of her hard road years can come out in [TS]

one encounter some women in rural Oregon [TS]

and that should say enough to anyone [TS]

from the West rural Oregon that's enough [TS]

its rural juror and even sounds likely [TS]

  to hear ya [TS]

we're put will pour pulling into a [TS]

parking spot they're pulling out of a [TS]

neighboring parking spot they are miles [TS]

away from our car but somehow they [TS]

  because of their like [TS]

met at old paranoid lack of depth [TS]

  perception [TS]

oh it's dave called it the best [TS]

dependent closet to that setup it they [TS]

felt like I had come close to their card [TS]

swiping their car and you know i'm a [TS]

pipe the meth mobile don't swipe it and [TS]

their cars like a pontiac grand am [TS]

yeah and I I'm piloting my vehicles you [TS]

rolling no bends you know and I just I [TS]

mean I me Lorenzo in the benzo and we [TS]

pull into the parking spot and at no [TS]

point does any part of my car venture [TS]

out of the two lines defining my area [TS]

right I'm just like in my slot I just [TS]

slotted in there like a key in a lock [TS]

and she's not even she's not even in her [TS]

slot she's already backed out but she [TS]

didn't like something about it she [TS]

didn't like and so she honking sound [TS]

easy for her to just drive away so just [TS]

really easy your double she's going with [TS]

  this transaction [TS]

I mean she's already out but she hawks [TS]

and then so I look at her in my rearview [TS]

mirror and she's like literally shaking [TS]

her fist and screaming like you almost [TS]

  hit my car [TS]

fuckin pocket for mac and and I'm like [TS]

you know I'm shrugging at her like I [TS]

don't know what I got you know I don't [TS]

know what what your problem is I don't [TS]

know who you are why you even talking to [TS]

  me [TS]

do I know you that's what I'm saying is [TS]

your mother's day yeah and she's like [TS]

that happened and she pulls up and my [TS]

sisters in the backseat my sister turns [TS]

around and looks at her and then puts [TS]

one hand up under her eye in a kind of [TS]

like fingers forward facing like light [TS]

fist right with her thumb pointing at [TS]

her face and she does the boo-hoo-hoo [TS]

cent sign of like like shaking the fifth [TS]

back and forth like wipes a little [TS]

imaginary tier out of the court [TS]

imaginary tier out of the court [TS]

variety and this and the and the and the [TS]

little fist gesture is so small this is [TS]

what this is what is so devastating [TS]

about it she doesn't go she doesn't do a [TS]

big elbow one she just puts her hand up [TS]

there under eye and just very very [TS]

slightly goes boohoo just a little like [TS]

no you notice and the woman like you see [TS]

the steam coming out of her ears and she [TS]

looks at my sister and my sisters [TS]

looking i can see this from behind right [TS]

  I know I because I've seen this a [TS]

  million times [TS]

my sister is looking at her with eyes [TS]

like the center of the North Pole like [TS]

her eyes are like the depth of of the [TS]

deepest glaciers in Greenland there's no [TS]

emotion of any kind and she's going boo [TS]

hoo and the woman the woman stops and [TS]

you just see her realize that she has no [TS]

there's nowhere to go now with this [TS]

issue it is it is resolved and she needs [TS]

to go away now and she just she just [TS]

turns and just drives and I was like a [TS]

boy and you know and I'm also like okay [TS]

well i'm just going to go into the store [TS]

now because i do not want to get [TS]

boo-hooed you know like that's not and [TS]

and and it's so it was so small just [TS]

such a smaller like wipe away a little [TS]

teeny pier and the only way that Susan [TS]

can the only way that she has that the [TS]

depth of the Greenland in her eyes is [TS]

the is the time that she spent in rural [TS]

organ and in rural everywhere all that [TS]

it's just like that the eyes are old you [TS]

know he's not the skin around the eyes [TS]

that still is young and and and and full [TS]

you know Rose nice nice safe [TS]

it's just deep leave inside deep in the [TS]

  Blackbird all that wisdom [TS]

yeah it's deep in their general Oregon [TS]

no your s know you're mm and I end and [TS]

so ever since them a couple of times [TS]

I've caught myself when I'm alone just [TS]

practicing making that gesture and the [TS]

end but the problem is i'll do that to [TS]

somebody and then we'll be in a fist [TS]

  fight it [TS]

ok right like she can do it in a way [TS]

that like the the issue is resolved but [TS]

for me it would just start it would just [TS]

start something right that the person be [TS]

like what what the but yeah right don't [TS]

cry what is it the is it the opening [TS]

salvo or the or the finishing blow [TS]

yeah yeah I don't know how to do it do [TS]

you remember do you remember the corgis [TS]

  I'm going down i don't feel like i don't [TS]

know i don't talk about Val about very [TS]

early eighties and the song [TS]

everybody's gotta learn sometime oh yeah [TS]

  of course [TS]

oh yeah I covered but you covered my [TS]

back oh I do remember they are they [TS]

  other British ok but it's a it's a [TS]

wonderful wonderful he's all i had that [TS]

to the list very forgot on [TS]

yeah very often forgotten in the list of [TS]

80 songs because even though it was a [TS]

hit it was you know it didn't like make [TS]

it all the way to the cannon and I think [TS]

you know where those songs it's really [TS]

easy to like it sits there it collects [TS]

dust in the corner bring you like I know [TS]

I know this certain song and you don't [TS]

here for 25 years in here on the radio [TS]

and you're like oh yes this [TS]

yep exactly adding to the list [TS]

everybody's kind of some time on these [TS]

tough but I think hanging on the [TS]

telephone which i think is a cover is a [TS]

  timeless quality to it [TS]

yep i agree how do you feel what your [TS]

  flock of seagulls cut [TS]

I mean I don't have 1i thought about it [TS]

I I feel like I would need to go back [TS]

and read listen to the records so I [TS]

either hits as much as i enjoy them [TS]

I think are more of a punch line oh well [TS]

I mean you mean like spaces love song [TS]

  some like that [TS]

no I mean I I find that I behind what [TS]

will you tell me what's your pick [TS]

what's my flock of seagulls but what I'm [TS]

on the list list is called new wave that [TS]

still stands up a playlist by Merlin [TS]

Mann if you're going to put a flock of [TS]

seagulls the USA somebody hates complete [TS]

your mind you have not heard this song [TS]

ever or you haven't heard it in over 30 [TS]

  years [TS]

what what is your pic to say I can't [TS]

believe how well this song still sounds [TS]

still stands up alright it is wishing oh [TS]

if I had to both i have a review [TS]

  something to remind me [TS]

yeah we'll spend my back to shoot down [TS]

no no it's got that drone it's got that [TS]

like the long the emotional lift and [TS]

then that--just deposits you in a state [TS]

  of flying [TS]

alright and you know the other one like [TS]

Iran and especially love songs yeah [TS]

  they're like it's a tease but I but [TS]

fishing is a tune that you know that [TS]

  that I think survives [TS]

I think I think give me corgis and fucks [TS]

eagles are good choices because you're [TS]

part of this is I just don't want to go [TS]

with the obvious there's a part of the [TS]

rabbit hole started before i got the [TS]

deadly oh uh where was I was watching [TS]

because I got that I get youtube on my [TS]

apple TV now and so I watch a lot of [TS]

YouTube at night because i don't want to [TS]

watch some amount of TV shows and I'm [TS]

started making movies now have you have [TS]

you purchased youtube red keep trying to [TS]

sell this to me the best it will so what [TS]

  happens on it [TS]

well the only part that there are lots [TS]

of benefits you get the latest hot [TS]

videos from their YouTube original [TS]

content partners which are mostly like [TS]

18 year old boys with Macklemore [TS]

  haircuts [TS]

what you get is youtube without ads boom [TS]

  end of story [TS]

I think if that means a lot to you as it [TS]

does to me that's pretty great and [TS]

somebody goes to the artist which is a [TS]

  good thing [TS]

so this is that but this is an eel yeah [TS]

it's absolutely no but it'sit's an eli [TS]

take on very happily but uh so yeah I [TS]

watched a lot of name is Rob blah in [TS]

different guises and and what coming [TS]

  down this rabbit hole [TS]

no containment 25th anniversary lame is [TS]

brother that's a thing they bring out [TS]

the foreign affairs at the end they do [TS]

that yeah they think about bringing home [TS]

some with four different job fairs often [TS]

different generations its glorious do [TS]

they do the the masquerade mask yeah the [TS]

price in pain was an adulterated know [TS]

that's a berlin berlin song give your [TS]

Berlin song necessary candy and that's a [TS]

good song or Berlin the thing is that [TS]

what your wii what no one takes into [TS]

consideration with Berlin the band is uh [TS]

is there actually like wonderful because [TS]

you want it you want to be with Berlin [TS]

you don't want to be with the Berlin of [TS]

the of the top gun [TS]

you want to be was way too late you want [TS]

you want that EP yeah you you want the [TS]

you know you want the metro you want sex [TS]

I'm out yep you want to know more word [TS]

and no more promises to explore player [TS]

was really good but the but their [TS]

records which one is it love life out [TS]

oh yeah the one which is like like a [TS]

chanteuse a it is it's it's cool i think [TS]

it's love like no it's like it's like [TS]

they're up there are 4 10 she looks like [TS]

a chanteuse right on the on Vienna a [TS]

cover and that's the one that has no [TS]

more words on it sounds like that but [TS]

that record is atop its top to bottom [TS]

great album it's like very rock and roll [TS]

there's a lot of like wiser and that's [TS]

what I'm thinking about thinking a [TS]

pleasure victim but like there's the [TS]

other what is that there when we make [TS]

love is on that now oh now it's my turn [TS]

that's my Berlin track ok now it's [TS]

matter is all right now these down now [TS]

it's Matt time right cut it up and then [TS]

nevermind that may hurt you again [TS]

  uh-uh that's a that is a totally cool [TS]

rock jam corgis everybody's gotta learn [TS]

sometime everybody's so it all started [TS]

because it going down the AV ad club [TS]

rabbit hole when people come into every [TS]

year AV Club this is a huge rabbit hole [TS]

actually you know about this but AV club [TS]

does this thing for last few years where [TS]

at the beginning of some arbitrary [TS]

period of time they pick out with the [TS]

editors and I guess with some input from [TS]

readers they pick out 25 songs by 25 [TS]

bands and bands come to visit them at [TS]

their little tiny studio in Chicago they [TS]

come in and they can pick any song on [TS]

the list that has not been picked yet [TS]

and they and they cover and have some [TS]

fantastic and very creative ones they [TS]

cover it up just like they pick it in [TS]

the studio and then learn it in 20 [TS]

minutes and coming out a lot of [TS]

questions about this I i gotta feeling [TS]

to listen you know how I feel about Ted [TS]

Leo right of course I mean you really [TS]

know how I feel about to do know [TS]

I know that you feel very strongly felt [TS]

very strongly about Ted Leo trying to [TS]

let this out too much publicly its kind [TS]

of unseemly yeah but I got a hard-on for [TS]

Ted Leo just as nothing but like I mean [TS]

they knew every part yeah everybody [TS]

wants to admit it but evident mean and [TS]

like a course chris wilson has maybe one [TS]

of the greatest drummers in the world [TS]

the shit he's doing on the hi-hat it's [TS]

like how did you just come up with that [TS]

when you think about you think about [TS]

that weird rhythm and yeah everybody but [TS]

attacked but he seems unlikely but they [TS]

just pulled out whereas superchunk came [TS]

in and said well yeah sure we really [TS]

like in-between days and laura says well [TS]

yeah also is easiest song on the list [TS]

uh-huh neighborhood in between days no [TS]

problem right but there was a list that [TS]

  they had in advance [TS]

I wonder it was this one comes in and [TS]

does shake it off and like anyway but so [TS]

and then every year they do this and put [TS]

them out there on YouTube and they're [TS]

all did you have done I've done shake it [TS]

off with deadly oh that's a great song [TS]

always you on the big boo screws [TS]

that's right so what led me there though [TS]

is something i returned to a couple [TS]

times year which is any contemporary as [TS]

in the last few years version of Colin [TS]

Hay covering overkill not covering [TS]

playing overkill academic very good song [TS]

great but lucky you know it's funny [TS]

because it's that the bones of that song [TS]

  are really strong [TS]

yep you know about now with the crazy [TS]

gotta get the sax guy something to do [TS]

but like when just that bones of that [TS]

song which actually reminds me a lot of [TS]

developer in some ways it's got that [TS]

little ascending that little chromatic [TS]

walk down thing be good be good to put [TS]

be happy to be good [TS]

hold on loosely John is that many huge [TS]

fan of the chromatic walk down its had a [TS]

big role in my life you know you taught [TS]

me one the G f-sharp EDC you know know [TS]

you taught me the country and western [TS]

chromatic won't see delete the bar oh no [TS]

Bob I got use that all Alex Chilton and [TS]

from paul westerberg and and often young [TS]

does it in that song you like tell me [TS]

  why don't on now [TS]

well yeah but the thing about it is that [TS]

as soon as you taught it to me you can't [TS]

I just do it I the time I put all I put [TS]

  it ever [TS]

it feels so good to put in every damn [TS]

song you know this song means bounding [TS]

  around the fall [TS]

yep so you don't send orgy and it feels [TS]

  great [TS]

it's so easy to just add a little bit of [TS]

country western sassafras and you know [TS]

as you know every one of my songs in G [TS]

  or she [TS]

that's the way to do it let's just get [TS]

the empirically and the thing you I [TS]

picked up from you I knew how to do this [TS]

but I didn't appreciate it until I heard [TS]

you do it is the sea with the added [TS]

logie all you gotta do that my god it [TS]

changes because I see now me I'm from [TS]

the old school i'm more of the 1i do a [TS]

see I'm gonna do the high g-o-d a little [TS]

bit more college rock you know you do [TS]

the sea with the low G the the rafters [TS]

are rattling understand be upset it'll [TS]

  be a briefing [TS]

yeah and then i also am always doing the [TS]

  I don't I don't argument as much as i as [TS]

i subtract you know I takeaway island I [TS]

let a I let any string in accord any [TS]

pose any chord position where i can take [TS]

one of the fingerings away and let that [TS]

string ring yeah I will play that chord [TS]

in its normal posture and then somewhere [TS]

within the within the bar i'll drop the [TS]

I'll drop a finger out and let a let us [TS]

a like a sympathetic string ring in open [TS]

positions in my experience that [TS]

generates a lot of nice pseudo maj7 it [TS]

does not do a little add onto that and [TS]

do a little wacky up with your with your [TS]

yeah if you have high strings [TS]

yeah it gives you some room and and now [TS]

you said you play like Steve how it [TS]

sounds like you're playing two things at [TS]

once began to sound like you're playing [TS]

two things at once that's especially [TS]

when you are especially when you're the [TS]

only guitarist in the band which [TS]

periodically I was periodically I was [TS]

the only guitar player in the one true [TS]

spirit for many years I've been the only [TS]

guitar player in my bag because I'm the [TS]

  only person to be [TS]

just hit by price that's a it's that now [TS]

I'm yeah now I'm the only bass player my [TS]

band to and and so yeah you know you [TS]

gotta work with what you've got and of [TS]

course I'm not I'm not what you would [TS]

call a good guitar player [TS]

unlike your your good friend Ted Leo [TS]

please Harley ringing a bell [TS]

oh yeah he's except he's exceptional [TS]

guitarist I am NOT one and so I gotta [TS]

throw all the little gym chimes and Jing [TS]

Jing's that I can that i can find in [TS]

  there [TS]

yeah I put it out put a chip John right [TS]

indistinct channel or Jim Jang yeah i'll [TS]

put it up put a gym Jang and then go to [TS]

a gym john i'm back to Jing Jing and [TS]

people are like whoa why that come from [TS]

  was on there [TS]

jonathan coulton the course would listen [TS]

and say that he tell me what the cords [TS]

were and why they work together and what [TS]

a better court i could have thought of [TS]

but that's why I don't hang around him [TS]

because you know these the worst that [TS]

he's a bad person is mounting of [TS]

  giftedness is it's off-putting [TS]

it's not a turn-on to thing is that [TS]

there are a lot of people that you and I [TS]

no problem between us who are very [TS]

talented we know a lot of talented [TS]

people we know a lot of people with a [TS]

lot of with a lot of talent and who have [TS]

who worked hard in addition to having [TS]

talent they have worked hard to to [TS]

fulfill their talent their promise and [TS]

those people are really infuriated any [TS]

operable I really don't like them a lot [TS]

and I wish they would shut up i wish [TS]

they would shut up with their talent i [TS]

wish they would go have some problems [TS]

  that's good [TS]
