  why don't we start there because if you [TS]

  don't have any opening statements then [TS]

  the next thing to do is talk about the [TS]

  opening of the film so that's pretty [TS]

  much what a reasonable an opening [TS]

  statement [TS]

  yeah go ahead John time pretty sure I [TS]

  talked about the opening of this movie [TS]

  in other episodes of incompetent maybe [TS]

  in [TS]

  uh the miyazaki survey course that we [TS]

  did ya the only two persons episode of [TS]

  the incomparable ever you and me John [TS]

  refresh our memory from episode 22 or [TS]

  whatever that is it was the incomparable [TS]

  number 84 March 2012 the opening of this [TS]

  movie is my second favorite Opening [TS]

  second to the Gnostic opening and it is [TS]

  very similar to it [TS]

  this movie is very so much Monica in [TS]

  many superficial ways and that this it [TS]

  opens with an action sequence and then [TS]

  there are there's a montage with a [TS]

  stylized sort of not title cards but [TS]

  like animations that are done in a [TS]

  different style than the rest of the [TS]

  movie and writing way that you have that [TS]

  you have that montage animation in the [TS]

  beginning of hours ago and you get the [TS]

  the theme music from the movie playing [TS]

  over it and i love that I love the sort [TS]

  of i'm going to give you background on [TS]

  the world wordlessly with some music but [TS]

  this one book ends it with the action [TS]

  sequence in the beginning which is you [TS]

  know frames this movie well and says [TS]

  this is going to be this is the kind of [TS]

  movie this is going to be and of course [TS]

  our hero falls from the airship and then [TS]

  the montage plays and then when the [TS]

  montage is over they cut back to our [TS]

  hero still falling because of course you [TS]

  still falling we saw her fall and a [TS]

  rather than say a and she falls for [TS]

  death like nope she's still falling [TS]

  she's unconscious and she's dropping [TS]

  through this guy which i think is one of [TS]

  the most dramatic sort of reveals and [TS]

  interest to the movie and it's brave and [TS]

  interesting and it's something you [TS]

  normally don't see like it even if they [TS]

  were going to have the hero fall in the [TS]

  pre credit sequence in a more [TS]

  conventional movie especially an [TS]

  animated one you would resume to find [TS]

  her on the ground you not sure how she [TS]

  got there or at the moment with the [TS]

  crystal reveal rather than just showing [TS]

  the seemingly lifeless in artbody [TS]

  hurdling downwards which is straight [TS]

  down headfirst right which is very [TS]

  dramatic for an animated kids filming I [TS]

  think overall this movie has shown that [TS]

  is very opening sequence dances on this [TS]

  weird line between cartoon physics and [TS]

  cartoon violence no you know where [TS]

  there's lots of shooting and guns and [TS]

  they're pirates and they're slightly [TS]

  comical but they're using realistic [TS]

  weapons and there's a little bit of an [TS]

  edge of danger it's like [TS]

  three steps of GI joe where everybody [TS]

  Jax just in time and nobody actually [TS]

  gets hit by bullets but it's it's a it's [TS]

  like a realistic and the drawings are [TS]

  all realistic so I think the opening [TS]

  this movie definitely sets the tone for [TS]

  it and is one of my favorite things and [TS]

  i think i may like the opening better [TS]

  than the rest of this entire movie [TS]

  combined so we just sit here and dwell [TS]

  on that for a while i agree with [TS]

  everything John said except for the [TS]

  unfortunate fact that we start with the [TS]

  Pirates and therefore we get joe [TS]

  hisaishi she's pirate theme which is [TS]

  really not good [TS]

  it's unbelievably eighties very kind of [TS]

  jarring synth music and it's possible to [TS]

  have synth music that has kind of an [TS]

  epic feel to it that feels lush and this [TS]

  particular theme does not it's a it's [TS]

  it's kind of a dull thud of a music cue [TS]

  which is unfortunate because all the the [TS]

  orchestral stuff with the opening theme [TS]

  and everything else is really beautiful [TS]

  and well done and this just sticks out [TS]

  like a sore thumb and unfortunately it [TS]

  opens up the movie also your first [TS]

  impression of this film is as I wrote in [TS]

  my notes a clown and some guys and [TS]

  jumpsuits takeover Zeppelin it's got my [TS]

  castle kali-aastra kind of feel to it [TS]

  and no we haven't done that one yet but [TS]

  it's in that vein of like sort of [TS]

  nineteen thirties or forties stylized [TS]

  cartoon-like all the characters they [TS]

  look more or less human but they sort of [TS]

  do squashes and stretches if they're [TS]

  learning to his characters in many [TS]

  regards like even when the door is [TS]

  bursting in when they come to the door [TS]

  the door bends and bulges in a cartoony [TS]

  way but then shatters into [TS]

  realistic-looking fragments is weird [TS]

  that the end is weird balance between if [TS]

  you take any individual grip frame like [TS]

  this is a realistically animated movie [TS]

  but if you happen to catch them in the [TS]

  middle of one of their cartoon physics [TS]

  things it's it's strange the Pirates are [TS]

  the same way they are both brandishing [TS]

  semi-realistic guns with bullets in them [TS]

  but totally comical and the the audio [TS]

  impression that I get yes the Pirates a [TS]

  goofy and you have that that stuff in [TS]

  the beginning but the sound that opens [TS]

  the film and the theme i think that [TS]

  opens the film is yeah basically [TS]

  miyazaki love flying machines flying [TS]

  machines make weird noises like this one [TS]

  the rhythmic buzzing and whining of [TS]

  their strange bird looking ship and the [TS]

  the little insect things they're flying [TS]

  on this could not be more miyazaki you [TS]

  know like it's just very wacky yeah my [TS]

  first note is all airships all the time [TS]

  yeah so true so true um I love that [TS]

  opening sequence i love the woodcut kind [TS]

  of style of it i think it's not only is [TS]

  the music good but I i just love how the [TS]

  whole thing looks I could watch that [TS]

  again and again on its own because I [TS]

  think it's really beautiful and I and [TS]

  I'm a sucker for that kind of like [TS]

  change in art style an animated movie [TS]

  and and that's a great one [TS]

  I love the I love the whole opening [TS]

  sequence it's beautiful now I assume the [TS]

  change in art style is because we're [TS]

  seeing kind of a montage of what has [TS]

  come before least that's what I got out [TS]

  of that the image shown there's that [TS]

  that's the build-up to the building of [TS]

  LA and and the end is they have returned [TS]

  to Earth on their giant spaceship which [TS]

  looks like it crashed and there's tons [TS]

  and tons of people streaming out and [TS]

  then we're back to the pastoral scene [TS]

  only now it's sheets standing out there [TS]

  with her weird mole creature instead of [TS]

  the previous guy [TS]

  yeah wraps around because they show in [TS]

  the beginning they start off they [TS]

  figured out they can make windmills that [TS]

  are very basic and used to pump water [TS]

  from the ground and that it progresses [TS]

  where they start you know putting [TS]

  propellers on propellers and you know [TS]

  culminating with the most ridiculous [TS]

  giant propeller underneath the floating [TS]

  city and all these cities are floating [TS]

  around and look at what we've done but [TS]

  then of course calamity and the forces [TS]

  of nature and or war force them back to [TS]

  the ground and in the end they're back [TS]

  where they started or just a sense they [TS]

  needed to return to the earth because of [TS]

  course man is indelibly attached to the [TS]

  rocks in the early yeah well it shows [TS]

  like all that you know the lightning and [TS]

  the storms and stuff like that but they [TS]

  end up back where they started which is [TS]

  now you know what was once known was [TS]

  lost to set this is such a classic [TS]

  premise for things like there was the [TS]

  the old world and great advancement and [TS]

  they flew too close to the Sun and there [TS]

  and now you know none now live there [TS]

  remember it so it's over we're back to [TS]

  back to that single propeller only knows [TS]

  that [TS]

  there's a little girl there and think [TS]

  like like the Star Wars crawl it gets a [TS]

  lot of expedition out of the way only [TS]

  without even using words and sets up the [TS]

  whole world so you can just cut right [TS]

  back to the store and say okay now I see [TS]

  where we are and back to the phone girl [TS]

  the only problem that is it took me two [TS]

  viewings to realize that that was the [TS]

  before times that I was seeing [TS]

  yeah it just appeared to be images of [TS]

  sky technology which we had already seen [TS]

  quite a bit of so you know there was no [TS]

  real reason to not assume that that was [TS]

  just present time you got my attention [TS]

  is a progression it's like the montage [TS]

  in journey in the game journey it's [TS]

  almost the same time on tosh brand new i [TS]

  had had seen now she has so many times [TS]

  that that's it's the same same kind of [TS]

  thing I mean it's not exactly a woodcut [TS]

  but it's giving you sort of that the [TS]

  history so as soon as this started I was [TS]

  like oh I see I see where this is going [TS]

  alright and paying attention the other [TS]

  thing i like most about the opening and [TS]

  it's actually for the thing I like most [TS]

  about the first half hour of the of the [TS]

  movie is the way it kind of toys with [TS]

  your assumptions because the first time [TS]

  through I just sort of assumed that the [TS]

  the man that she was traveling within [TS]

  the glasses was her father and the [TS]

  Pirates were straight up the bad guys [TS]

  and I didn't notice the subtle touches [TS]

  like how she's refusing her dinner yeah [TS]

  he puts the plate towards her and she [TS]

  just turns the head he shoves look very [TS]

  subtle animation again in a movie where [TS]

  things get completely cartoonish very [TS]

  soon and even that same scene and when [TS]

  she constant with the bottle i just [TS]

  assumed well it's because he's trying to [TS]

  protect her and she knows that he's [TS]

  gonna get killed if he protects her so [TS]

  she's shocked him and knock him out [TS]

  take the crystal that she knows the [TS]

  Pirates want she's gonna head out and [TS]

  and and save her father you got your [TS]

  Hall the movie run your mom yeah a lot [TS]

  of sense [TS]

  well I did you know it'sit's tropes that [TS]

  I'm used to seeing in this sort of thing [TS]

  you know and and so I was going with [TS]

  that assumption until actually 30 [TS]

  minutes in when they finally revealed [TS]

  that she is afraid of the guy when he [TS]

  appears so I thought it was really cool [TS]

  very well done and and and more [TS]

  effective than perhaps it was to anybody [TS]

  else because i'm an idiot talking about [TS]

  sheet for a second because it you know [TS]

  within the miyazaki heroines are not so [TS]

  popular a lot of movies you watch and [TS]

  this one the first couple times I watch [TS]

  this [TS]

  I always felt mildly disappointed that [TS]

  she was that the Delete in this one [TS]

  is it's kind of a split type thing i'm [TS]

  not sure you can see the lead but she [TS]

  does our main character but she is [TS]

  immediately you know falling to her [TS]

  seeming death but on a subsequent [TS]

  viewings i watched I've seen that she [TS]

  does she actually does most of the [TS]

  things that heroin does is just like Oh [TS]

  heroin in the movie like her little [TS]

  friend so she's she's prisoner and can't [TS]

  do much about it when she sees a chance [TS]

  to free herself from her situation she [TS]

  takes initiative and consummate the [TS]

  bottle then she's brave by going out the [TS]

  window but she's also located and [TS]

  miscalculate sand falls and so that that [TS]

  all fits and then she has to be carried [TS]

  by pot soup down and you know she ends [TS]

  up unconscious for a long period of time [TS]

  but as the movie progresses in and now [TS]

  my 900 you doing [TS]

  I was taking note of when is she being [TS]

  swept along by them by the plot and when [TS]

  is she doing something making a decision [TS]

  and advancing the story or at least [TS]

  deciding her own fade rather than having [TS]

  the events of the movie decide for and [TS]

  I've come around a little bit to [TS]

  thinking that she's not as sort of [TS]

  cookie cutter damsel as I originally [TS]

  thought she was other thing i noticed [TS]

  watching it I'm really watches in [TS]

  earnest in 45 years and I think this is [TS]

  true of most miyazaki movies but this is [TS]

  a great example our is you know we've [TS]

  talked before about how difficult it is [TS]

  to know when and where this is supposed [TS]

  to be the only thing I usually feel with [TS]

  some certainty easy things are usually [TS]

  not in the future I don't know if [TS]

  they're in the past but you know the [TS]

  combination the dick different [TS]

  technologies you know the wackadoo [TS]

  outfits that people have this feels very [TS]

  steampunk to me [TS]

  sialic steampunk whales so you know but [TS]

  it's like it it opens but it opens with [TS]

  this almost James Bond beginning when [TS]

  you think about the way she's falling [TS]

  and I guess I just feel like it's I'm [TS]

  realizing more and more how draw him how [TS]

  do i am to win these things start like I [TS]

  don't want to miss a single detail of [TS]

  what's happening because not only trying [TS]

  to figure out who's who who's good who's [TS]

  bad guy you know what I mean what the [TS]

  relationships are but you know I'm [TS]

  thinking about what you know where this [TS]

  is what parts of this is the magical [TS]

  things [TS]

  and I i think these movies and the [TS]

  course it's just visually stunning and [TS]

  maybe on top of it all like I don't [TS]

  think this looks like it's from 1986 [TS]

  it's that's the other thing these movies [TS]

  it's very difficult for me to tell you [TS]

  from my parents what order these were [TS]

  made in and kind of out of time [TS]

  yeah yeah it is but i think that that [TS]

  conflict different things and you know [TS]

  as circuses talked about so many times [TS]

  before like you know sometimes things [TS]

  from different countries and cultures [TS]

  are just they're interesting because [TS]

  they are so different but in this case [TS]

  like why are these guys wearing like [TS]

  hoods and ballet slippers and what's [TS]

  happening and I'm feeling that meeting [TS]

  that especially attenuates my interest [TS]

  in what's going on i pay super duper [TS]

  amounts of attention in a way that i may [TS]

  not with with other kinds of movies [TS]

  that's part of why that supremely [TS]

  eighties pirates theme is so [TS]

  disappointing to me because it really [TS]

  kind of drops the the action right into [TS]

  a specific time period and I'm [TS]

  intimately aware that it's 1986 whenever [TS]

  that plays I'm happy without awareness [TS]

  and i like that you had in mind that I [TS]

  it having not seen a whole lot of [TS]

  miyazaki and the few ones that I had [TS]

  things that I had seen kind of thinking [TS]

  that maybe it just do it wasn't for me [TS]

  if I didn't dislike anything I'd seen I [TS]

  just hadn't enjoyed it except for now [TS]

  and I was thinking maybe that was just a [TS]

  an outlier and that was just the only 1i [TS]

  liked this was the first time that I [TS]

  watched castle in the sky and when it [TS]

  started it i was just immediately swept [TS]

  up in it felt like sort of coming home [TS]

  it felt like putting on a warm blanket [TS]

  like this all just sort of feels right [TS]

  all the things you guys have talked [TS]

  about so far and then it wasn't tell I [TS]

  don't know just a little bit earlier [TS]

  today and i watch this yesterday that I [TS]

  realized why it felt so comforting and [TS]

  it was because it reminded me an awful [TS]

  lot of a series called Nadia the secret [TS]

  of blue water which starts out with the [TS]

  mysterious the are young girl with a [TS]

  mysterious past who has a jeweled [TS]

  necklace that some sort of wacky since [TS]

  the sort of wacky they're not pirates I [TS]

  remember exactly what they are but [TS]

  they're a wacky crew of people that are [TS]

  somewhat funny trying to trying to catch [TS]

  her and she meets a young boy was trying [TS]

  to invent an airplane and they go on [TS]

  these adventures only to discover today [TS]

  that it was written by miyazaki so no [TS]

  surprise but I love Nadia so all of [TS]

  those pieces sort of came together [TS]

  um and and and it just made me feel kind [TS]

  of at home and it's it's very it's a [TS]

  little more fantastical than nadia is [TS]

  not yet gets weird because it ends up [TS]

  being 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea [TS]

  whereas I think this i now prefer castle [TS]

  in the sky because it's a little a [TS]

  little less goofball later on I wanted [TS]

  to get back to what John was saying [TS]

  about sheet a kind of being mildly [TS]

  disappointing because it doesn't seem [TS]

  like she has a whole lot of agency [TS]

  although she does indeed make several [TS]

  moves that that are the heroic moves but [TS]

  and I think a lot of the disappointment [TS]

  that is is just in contrast to the the [TS]

  strong female protagonist that have been [TS]

  another miyazaki films I mean she kind [TS]

  of stands out in that respect but I i [TS]

  think a lot of that is just because I [TS]

  mean this whole thing is so much just a [TS]

  like a boy's adventure tale like a [TS]

  treasure island except with airplanes [TS]

  really sure and it's so much from [TS]

  positive perspective I mean he's he's [TS]

  he's an orphan sure but he's got this [TS]

  cool pad was able to build this pencil [TS]

  and pad ever [TS]

  yeah and then this really beautiful girl [TS]

  just descends from the sky and lands in [TS]

  his arms and he's able to save her and [TS]

  then anything adventure and they fall [TS]

  into some done mining tunnels but [TS]

  they're not really that scary because [TS]

  they brought sandwiches and then uncle [TS]

  palm shows up and uncle tom is this [TS]

  school is happy guys buddy and and then [TS]

  they join the Pirates and then there's a [TS]

  giant robot and you know so much of it [TS]

  is just from that perspective that I [TS]

  think I think she kind of gets lost in [TS]

  in in the mix but on the other hand [TS]

  really the only character in this thing [TS]

  that is a complex fully-formed character [TS]

  is dola who is a wonderful character yet [TS]

  and very very nuanced so I think that [TS]

  someone makes up for it [TS]

  yeah the speaking a bed that opening [TS]

  sequence with his house and her finding [TS]

  it like they spent so much movie so much [TS]

  time and music he always says he'll [TS]

  spend all the time in the world just [TS]

  establishing atmosphere and whimsy like [TS]

  pot to fixing the Machine getting [TS]

  meatballs for his boss the unconscious [TS]

  she is up top and he's running around [TS]

  doing his job [TS]

  you know you learn that you know that [TS]

  he's a kid he's gotta work he's gotta [TS]

  work hard everyone else is gone home the [TS]

  economy's not that you have the miners [TS]

  are talking comin up in the elevator and [TS]

  all that about [TS]

  gonna run out of stuff in the mine yeah [TS]

  learn to work the break then he goes [TS]

  back to his house and it's all foggy in [TS]

  the morning and he lets the dogs out in [TS]

  places trumpet minutes later the [TS]

  whimsies just coming onto your head is [TS]

  like unbelievable do you think the town [TS]

  appreciates that trumpet playing by the [TS]

  way or do they hate the orphan on the [TS]

  hill [TS]

  well that's why they sent him to the [TS]

  hill yeah and take your trumpet with you [TS]

  and his job he jumps off with the [TS]

  crystalline like here's the thing about [TS]

  these two characters like they're you [TS]

  know this is an adventure movie and the [TS]

  characters aren't that complicated but [TS]

  for a good character the traits of the [TS]

  characters have pots mashita they are [TS]

  good-natured like chill people basically [TS]

  like that they're both of their [TS]

  personalities he's a bit of a goofball [TS]

  she's generally nice they both have grit [TS]

  and determination but neither one of [TS]

  them has the complicated character flaws [TS]

  of I mean I guess I have an older person [TS]

  I suppose right they they both have the [TS]

  naivete of children at which is probably [TS]

  appropriate but they didn't need one of [TS]

  them are are like even is complicated [TS]

  and have as much of an inner world is [TS]

  for example key who I think it's just [TS]

  supposed to be a little bit older but I [TS]

  get a Kiki vibe from this beginning part [TS]

  because of the amount of time they spend [TS]

  dwelling on the deep the mundane details [TS]

  of their life of you know their house [TS]

  and the breakfast and the trumpets and [TS]

  the doves and feeding them and just they [TS]

  spend a lot of time here and that that [TS]

  gives me the warm fuzzies because he is [TS]

  basically an entire movie of that right [TS]

  and this is this is a nice sort of [TS]

  interlude between the big dramatic [TS]

  falling from the airship to two tanks [TS]

  driving down train tracks and falling [TS]

  into a giant pit you know like it says [TS]

  this has a nice roller case roller [TS]

  coaster in terms of the the wacky action [TS]

  and then the interludes retargeting no [TS]

  palm and and that the rocks are lighting [TS]

  out there's there's another part that is [TS]

  I think it runs through somewhat through [TS]

  the movies which is obviously it's a [TS]

  movie there's events we are we are [TS]

  seeing the action happening and part of [TS]

  that is the pacing the storytelling all [TS]

  that kind of stuff that you think about [TS]

  a lot of the characters especially the [TS]

  kids in his movies think about what [TS]

  their life is like all the time when [TS]

  they're not doing that action [TS]

  you might imagine a pretty lonely kid if [TS]

  you think about really just a whole lot [TS]

  of the characters and in this case these [TS]

  are two kids that that were probably you [TS]

  know the pretty lonely and you know you [TS]

  know what it's like when you make a [TS]

  friend and now you know you're looking [TS]

  out for that person and if there's [TS]

  something you know it something you know [TS]

  kind of sweet and organic about that and [TS]

  then again also maybe a little bit [TS]

  melancholy I I'm could be a little off [TS]

  base here but i think i think a lot of [TS]

  his characters if you imagine them in [TS]

  their repose would probably just spent a [TS]

  lot of time ruminating and feeling a [TS]

  little bit alone and it's nice to see [TS]

  people come together like that you know [TS]

  with common cause that's what I like [TS]

  about shita and pots are working [TS]

  together is that it feels more like I [TS]

  don't know you know more fairy tale-like [TS]

  but it's where there's a boy and a girl [TS]

  and no it's like Hansel and Gretel [TS]

  almost right there kind of lost it on [TS]

  their own and they have to take care of [TS]

  themselves and their team and yeah they [TS]

  go off and do some different things and [TS]

  she gets taken because she's the key to [TS]

  this because she's royalty she gets [TS]

  taken away and pops who has to have his [TS]

  little daring do but i do feel like [TS]

  they're a team and that's one of the [TS]

  things I like about it is that they're [TS]

  there on equal footing also by the way [TS]

  if you listen to the dubbed version [TS]

  english dub the voices of pots to and [TS]

  Sheeta are much older sounding than they [TS]

  are in japanese version so i think the [TS]

  right way to look at them is that [TS]

  they're pretty young married there maybe [TS]

  even not just a little younger than key [TS]

  they're a lot younger than key these are [TS]

  fairly young kids that was the same [TS]

  issue I had with nasik aware where [TS]

  suddenly she jumped from like a [TS]

  thirteen-year-old girl to a [TS]

  seventeen-year-old girl [TS]

  yeah i mean the way those pirates were [TS]

  retreating shita did at first I was like [TS]

  oh yeah they're little kids and then [TS]

  suddenly all these Pirates are falling [TS]

  over each other in love with her I'm [TS]

  like okay she's older how old are they [TS]

  supposed to be do you think is based on [TS]

  the viruses the Japanese know that the [TS]

  kids because based on the Japanese I [TS]

  assume yet 1211 yeah yeah but obviously [TS]

  the the English dub suggest and perhaps [TS]

  that's just because of the Pirates in [TS]

  later that suggests that they're a bit [TS]

  older but this they shouldn't look at [TS]

  of a fallen world where that the ruins [TS]

  of the past civilization are there if [TS]

  you look at where they're living their [TS]

  kind of living in like a crater you [TS]

  actually see it at various points there [TS]

  are like like impact craters all over [TS]

  the ground like old impact craters were [TS]

  4 meteors are from bombs from the past [TS]

  civilization however that are falling [TS]

  the city's yeah you know it's not it's a [TS]

  tough world for everybody that randomly [TS]

  fired off weapons from Sky fortresses [TS]

  could they live they live in a tough [TS]

  world but they are both of these [TS]

  characters are cheerfully determined to [TS]

  do whatever needs to be well i think a [TS]

  lot of it just comes from that whole [TS]

  adventure tailed you from the childhood [TS]

  view anyway I mean it's you know you're [TS]

  sitting around fantasizing well you know [TS]

  if I could get rid of these idiot [TS]

  parents of mine i could live in a hut [TS]

  somewhere and have great adventure [TS]

  really self-sufficient and I don't have [TS]

  to worry about anything like building or [TS]

  purchasing a house one would just appear [TS]

  for me and I could live in it all by [TS]

  myself [TS]

  he's whistle though because he misses [TS]

  his dad and his he's his project like [TS]

  you sell because must be lonely party [TS]

  was a project this project is to build a [TS]

  plane and prove his missing or deceased [TS]

  father right there you know this picture [TS]

  we took that everyone said he was crazy [TS]

  like he's you know he's he has something [TS]

  that is trying to do we're not quite [TS]

  sure what she was doing other then she [TS]

  was just hanging out on her farm in the [TS]

  absence of her parents and got stolen [TS]

  right let's talk about the Pirates and [TS]

  the pirate chase one of the things that [TS]

  happens so after after we have our [TS]

  moment in the in the mind and all of [TS]

  that one of the next thing that happens [TS]

  in this movie is this big pirate chase [TS]

  they come down on their bug flyers [TS]

  there's a chase through town it leads to [TS]

  which chase a train chase and then and [TS]

  then [TS]

  it becomes a three-way chase because [TS]

  then the army is on the train tracks and [TS]

  the Pirates are kind of battling the [TS]

  army and and there's a crumbling bridge [TS]

  and and you know it ends with them [TS]

  falling from the for the crumbling [TS]

  bridge that they're dangling on and of [TS]

  course they float down because as we saw [TS]

  in the opening sequence if you've got [TS]

  that crystal you don't fall to your [TS]

  death you float down but i love this [TS]

  whole thing i love this whole thing be [TS]

  the train chase it's great it's a great [TS]

  action sequence where they they're [TS]

  coming up behind them and they've got [TS]

  the extra cars and then they try to [TS]

  disconnect the cars so that they'll hit [TS]

  them but then they push forward and then [TS]

  they have to try to put the brake on in [TS]

  order to to delay them further like all [TS]

  of that and there's also the way they [TS]

  frame it where like there's the great [TS]

  there's a slow-motion chest-thumping [TS]

  fight scene that has all the sons [TS]

  interests right we're bursting olvera [TS]

  their shirts the ID we should talk about [TS]

  that was good yeah we have mom gets the [TS]

  binoculars and is and she they're all [TS]

  wanted to watch the fight she's a [TS]

  wonderful shot that kind of frames this [TS]

  the beginning of this where she's at [TS]

  first starts out looking at the front [TS]

  right and then she slowly turns and [TS]

  looks down she's a smart one [TS]

  she figures out that they went out the [TS]

  back door and that kind of frames the [TS]

  beginning of that while the suns like [TS]

  you are watching all anyone knows saying [TS]

  like I just the framing that all the way [TS]

  the tracks are torn up like why are they [TS]

  throwing the car off i'm not sure but [TS]

  like it was it was it was a great action [TS]

  seen you again like something from James [TS]

  Bond it was it was really good [TS]

  they were throwing those off so they [TS]

  could they could pull their car forward [TS]

  forward [TS]

  yeah yeah and they are and the army [TS]

  thing is great where they're like whoa [TS]

  we can't go there it's the army and we [TS]

  can oh no but another coming and they go [TS]

  across the other at the other bridge [TS]

  they're running at this point across the [TS]

  other bridge and the army like takes it [TS]

  out and I yeah it's all it's all very [TS]

  exciting i just i i really love the [TS]

  whole thing a felt very he gave me the [TS]

  same feeling that like watching a good [TS]

  like a watching indiana jones kind of [TS]

  sequence makes me feel it's just again [TS]

  it's adventure and daring do and some [TS]

  surprises and some interesting actions [TS]

  that the characters have to go through [TS]

  although who builds these trestle [TS]

  bridges that fall apart when a car [TS]

  rides over yeah there's a lot of damage [TS]

  that wasn't in the specs t yeah I [TS]

  wondered about the physics of those just [TS]

  kind of in general they seem like [TS]

  they're you know like a mile off the [TS]

  ground all wood and have slaves I gotta [TS]

  be imbued with some kind of magic to [TS]

  actually be holding together at all here [TS]

  and there barely holding together [TS]

  yes your flavor you get from the [TS]

  sequences when pots you like it when [TS]

  he's running to catch the train [TS]

  originally hey you got the impression [TS]

  that he's run to catch train many times [TS]

  and it's confirmed when he gets on there [TS]

  and the end the the engineer of the [TS]

  train recognize them so much like like [TS]

  you get the idea of you get a picture of [TS]

  his life that he is a scamp he's running [TS]

  around he's doing his job [TS]

  sometimes you catch the train and of [TS]

  course our engineer knows him because he [TS]

  does this all the time and that you know [TS]

  that kind of gives a sense of community [TS]

  that this isn't it on his home turf and [TS]

  that's why he's able to outsmart them [TS]

  despite the Army and the Pirates [TS]

  afternoon when he knows the Pirates to [TS]

  he's the one that announces its the dole [TS]

  on the pulse of people want to talk [TS]

  about that the previous scene where [TS]

  they're in the town in there the the [TS]

  Pirates come and there's the we have the [TS]

  battle as the people whose who can swell [TS]

  their chest up to the shirts are way too [TS]

  they say like a do that thing where [TS]

  you're where you're sure bursts open mic [TS]

  explode had the wife of the potters boss [TS]

  pan or a rolling pin or so yeah and when [TS]

  the fights gonna go out she grabs that [TS]

  haired daughter right there LMAO yeah [TS]

  next to his boss making his big thing [TS]

  she comes back a minute later grabbed [TS]

  this is another case where like all the [TS]

  women have to take the women folk and [TS]

  comes back out pop so you come and he [TS]

  again the wife and the daughter the [TS]

  rumble daughter and the wife you could [TS]

  tell like like everyone else in this [TS]

  town it's a hard life like these are [TS]

  hardworking people there you know [TS]

  everything is not perfectly clean they [TS]

  tried to make the best home they can in [TS]

  what looks like the ruins of a city that [TS]

  they didn't build the buildings of the [TS]

  side of a cliff just such a flavor for [TS]

  for everything involved even though like [TS]

  that town is not going to be part of [TS]

  this movie for long like we will leave [TS]

  this setting but it's what you get you [TS]

  get so much out of the the community [TS]

  part also we should give a shout-out [TS]

  without enlist in the dub trust McNeil [TS]

  the woman does all the voices on like [TS]

  futurama in the simpsons yeah and she's [TS]

  so good in that small role but also just [TS]

  the way the whole like there's a sense [TS]

  of community pride and like wanting to [TS]

  getting hurt and then it ends with like [TS]

  with them all hiding under covers and [TS]

  what you've got the spy planes all of [TS]

  the spy planes going around like we got [TS]

  this government planes making an ominous [TS]

  noise almost silently overhead and dola [TS]

  for the millionth time is the is the [TS]

  smart one that she she's the one who [TS]

  knows stay undercover and the kids are [TS]

  like oh the coast is clear we can leave [TS]

  in a course they trapped they caught [TS]

  right now the only thing that bugs me [TS]

  about the sequences that the the [TS]

  animation on the characters sometimes it [TS]

  dips into that anime wackiness thing [TS]

  where I guess it might be the squash and [TS]

  stretch that you were referring to [TS]

  before they're like like Looney Tunes [TS]

  cartoons they were their legs [TS]

  exaggerated like this suddenly they're [TS]

  made of jello yeah they're like stomping [TS]

  their feet and weirdly slow-motion [TS]

  sometimes like when they get here with a [TS]

  shovel it's like it one-third speed with [TS]

  the grin on their face it's so odd [TS]

  yeah like that's when they purposely go [TS]

  again with the put the punching thing [TS]

  where they both punch each other in the [TS]

  stomach and make big expressions and you [TS]

  might as well see a giant beetle sweat [TS]

  appear on their they don't go that far [TS]

  but like a lot of the animatrix come in [TS]

  and they'll slide right back to [TS]

  completely you know realistic sort of [TS]

  kinky style animation for other [TS]

  sequences like when they're having lunch [TS]

  in the tunnel but when it comes to the [TS]

  action scenes suddenly become a made of [TS]

  rubber again so I fall down in the in [TS]

  the pit and and the end are saved by the [TS]

  glowing and the crystal and they meet [TS]

  uncle palm who lives down in the caves [TS]

  for whatever can see you clearly at [TS]

  goblin and and they learned that if they [TS]

  turn off all the lights the the rocks [TS]

  down there in the mines glow and it [TS]

  looks like looks like stars or something [TS]

  and this is etherium the material that [TS]

  her her necklace is made out of these [TS]

  are just sort of trace amounts in the [TS]

  rocks [TS]

  I I markdown that with all that glowing [TS]

  all around them in this in the rocks [TS]

  it seems like it seems a little [TS]

  dangerous like that sits with radium [TS]

  sky with big lazy propellers you like [TS]

  those propellers well couldn't make [TS]

  those things float that's that doesn't [TS]

  make any sense like why even bother [TS]

  having the propellers are probably [TS]

  practicing like oh it's not the [TS]

  propellers that are making it throws the [TS]

  etherium that's making it float the [TS]

  theorem is Magic the powers are just [TS]

  there for steering and aesthetics and [TS]

  suddenly the world is coherent within [TS]

  within his real assistant because none [TS]

  of them not depressing stuff makes sense [TS]

  and if you look at the modern things all [TS]

  the modern devices they don't have a [TS]

  theory and they're all they're all [TS]

  dirigibles of some kind they're all big [TS]

  there you know lighter-than-air craft [TS]

  with a bunch of crap strap to them [TS]

  because they don't have a theorem and so [TS]

  all their vehicles look I mean maybe not [TS]

  realistic because you have these hot-air [TS]

  on the head with a wine bottle earlier [TS]

  super creepy and cool about that [TS]

  although he does kind of look like he [TS]

  should be standing out in front of a car [TS]

  dealership a giant-sized one in the [TS]

  studio ghibli museum in Japan like I'd [TS]

  full-size metal statue of it looks very [TS]

  impressive look nice this whole setup of [TS]

  like where where they kidnapped you like [TS]

  this sort of castle / military base such [TS]

  a great look it said you know sort of [TS]

  exaggerated medieval castle mixed with [TS]

  like world war two bunker and and pods [TS]

  in the in the little dungeon where the [TS]

  door is two feet up off the ground and [TS]

  tries to squeeze himself through like a [TS]

  little archery slit that leads on to the [TS]

  parade grounds for the soldiers are [TS]

  marching such atmosphere again [TS]

  total total removed from like the weird [TS]

  mining town [TS]

  into this which will soon see wrecked in [TS]

  another great action scene but I i just [TS]

  love everything this is the thing we [TS]

  talked about before like the combination [TS]

  of multiple of Earth cultures from the [TS]

  past as as invented imagined by Japanese [TS]

  people is always delightful [TS]

  yeah i agree and i do love this robot [TS]

  one of the things about the robot design [TS]

  that I really like is that I think when [TS]

  rendered if you rendered it [TS]

  realistically you would entirely lose [TS]

  its it you entirely lose its charm i [TS]

  think because i think its charm is that [TS]

  it is a dream it's a it's an animated [TS]

  robot it's a drawing of a robot and I [TS]

  think I think you can see like i love [TS]

  how the arms hanging down like and [TS]

  that's the thing that I think it was [TS]

  rendered realistically it would look [TS]

  dumb but the way that it's wrong it's [TS]

  just beautiful [TS]

  it's it's yeah that also allows it to [TS]

  move on four limbs in a way that is [TS]

  extremely creepy and really cool looking [TS]

  right at it doesn't it doesn't uh it [TS]

  doesn't squash and stretch for the most [TS]

  part it bike its face is entirely nerd [TS]

  it doesn't blink it has two differently [TS]

  shaped and sized eyes and they're all of [TS]

  its emotion is expressed through body [TS]

  language and to blinking red lights [TS]

  that's pretty great i love the way it's [TS]

  animated to when it's a when its kind of [TS]

  testing out the fact that it's missing [TS]

  part of its arm and one of its feet [TS]

  yes I guess it's kind of its kind of [TS]

  identifying the fact that this piece is [TS]

  missing and it's got to kind of adjust a [TS]

  little bit and clearly it doesn't do it [TS]

  completely properly because it has some [TS]

  trouble flying around when it swings get [TS]

  out initially but just that the whole [TS]

  dynamic of that is really cool but I [TS]

  draw the insides of it like this you can [TS]

  see it with the broken up arm the inside [TS]

  of the right like look like a person's [TS]

  guts but it's still all clearly [TS]

  mechanical like this that fine line of [TS]

  like it an organic robot like what if [TS]

  what if organic beings were made of [TS]

  metal instead of four [TS]

  if we don't know whether it's metal or [TS]

  ceramic is that the two choices but like [TS]

  it as you know living things as [TS]

  envisioned made of something other than [TS]

  flesh and [TS]

  you know it does such a great job both [TS]

  here and later of being convincingly [TS]

  advanced like so clearly this technology [TS]

  is beyond the people who found like the [TS]

  short falling from the sky with a [TS]

  stylized animation on to the farmers [TS]

  right this is so clearly super advanced [TS]

  tech they have no idea how it works but [TS]

  at the same time it also looks like old [TS]

  and steampunk right like it's it's so [TS]

  confusing to them like they don't [TS]

  understand they think it's dead they [TS]

  don't understand it works its weapons [TS]

  are so much more powerful than the other [TS]

  weapons thats just one this one gardener [TS]

  robot or whatever the hell it was [TS]

  I could have been one of the common ones [TS]

  i suppose but it doesn't look like it's [TS]

  not it doesn't look like all techno [TS]

  metal like sci-fi future as we would [TS]

  imagine so to us it looks old but to [TS]

  them it's super-advanced i love i love [TS]

  it's near indestructibility and and the [TS]

  havoc it wreaks on the entire army this [TS]

  one [TS]

  pour half broken robot yeah I think that [TS]

  was the thing that spoke to me the most [TS]

  was just how effective it was at him [TS]

  burning and bashing and killing like [TS]

  everything that I mean more than [TS]

  anything else yes the technology looks [TS]

  really you know advanced as compared to [TS]

  the you know [TS]

  steampunk city with the wooden bridges [TS]

  that fall down when you drive over them [TS]

  but the fact that all i had to do was [TS]

  just basically point it's little head [TS]

  and shoots laser beam out and just [TS]

  suddenly things are erupting into flame [TS]

  and by the end of everything has erupted [TS]

  into flames I was like okay this [TS]

  perfectly illustrates how advanced these [TS]

  you know Latin people must have been and [TS]

  and the kind of thing that these two [TS]

  kids are about to get themselves into in [TS]

  their adventure looking for this place [TS]

  like wow you kids have bit off perhaps [TS]

  more than you can chew which just [TS]

  ratchet up the tension and was [TS]

  delightful and this this is another is [TS]

  another action scene and this is a shift [TS]

  i think into alright so we've got [TS]

  realistic-looking guns and we've got the [TS]

  potato masher grenade and we got [TS]

  fistfights but really no one gets hurt [TS]

  and this this bring it brings it up [TS]

  another level where there you know the [TS]

  music is more ominous there's flames [TS]

  everywhere there's not as much cartoon [TS]

  cartoon violence is more like regular [TS]

  rounds you really see people burning to [TS]

  death or dying but you see people [TS]

  screaming you see a lot of flames and [TS]

  for both of my kids this was a very [TS]

  intense scene in the first few times my [TS]

  daughter watches we should not make it [TS]

  past the scene and for many many years [TS]

  this was known as the robot movie can i [TS]

  see the robot she eventually watch it [TS]

  through and became one of her favorite [TS]

  movies you watch it over and over again [TS]

  essentially like you wouldn't think i'll [TS]

  cast Muscat it's the robot movie but to [TS]

  my daughter this is absolutely the robot [TS]

  moment yeah it's kind of amazing that [TS]

  with as as little emoting as the thing [TS]

  is able to do i actually wrote down when [TS]

  it gets destroyed haha or in [TS]

  discriminately descriptive giant robot I [TS]

  know just trying to protect his princess [TS]

  this is the big turn for she's right [TS]

  she's not going to stimulate you know [TS]

  give her like dresses and stuff and and [TS]

  you know we need you to work the crystal [TS]

  because we're not sure you know he he's [TS]

  playing out his plot and rather being [TS]

  captured and plied with dresses is it [TS]

  such a stereotypical thing but it's a [TS]

  complete role reversal what happens here [TS]

  because normally what happens is the [TS]

  girl is is trapped somewhere and the [TS]

  hero sacrifices himself says i don't [TS]

  care what you don't care what you do to [TS]

  me I'll help you with your evil plot [TS]

  just let the girl go and the girl goes [TS]

  free and and the male hero sacrifices [TS]

  himself to you know is that that's all [TS]

  he cares about to protect it [TS]

  she does that for him and says I will [TS]

  deal whatever i'll do the deal just let [TS]

  pots to go and he comes out of done is [TS]

  what I'm ready to fight gone it's like I [TS]

  actually you know you can go free she's [TS]

  gonna help everything's fine she plays [TS]

  it up like no it's good i'm fine here [TS]

  you can go and he leaves of course he's [TS]

  all crushed because he doesn't feel like [TS]

  you know it feels like he couldn't save [TS]

  her [TS]

  he doesn't try probably buy that she [TS]

  wasn't but she she makes a choice there [TS]

  she makes a heroic choice sacrifices [TS]

  herself and it's the exact opposite of [TS]

  the same movie you see a million other [TS]

  movies and again the first many times I [TS]

  saw it [TS]

  well I couldn't get over the fact that [TS]

  she was just being held prisoner in this [TS]

  castle by the bad guy which is just so [TS]

  stereotypical but it's really actually [TS]

  less conventional than that and i think [TS]

  it plays pretty well because even though [TS]

  they do the reversal that both of their [TS]

  reactions to the situation are not what [TS]

  you expect she cries in the tower after [TS]

  after making this decision because she's [TS]

  upset about it should now she'd made the [TS]

  sacrifice but it's tough to make [TS]

  sacrifices and he runs away and he's [TS]

  dejected because even though he is free [TS]

  he doesn't feel that he's been saved [TS]

  because he feels like it's his [TS]

  responsibility as gender role too [TS]

  protect her and so they're both they're [TS]

  both stuck in the opposite roles and [TS]

  both the characters in movies know it [TS]

  and I just don't handle it well they're [TS]

  like can we be in start a stereotypical [TS]

  fairytale wear these roles reversed I [TS]

  feel much more comfortable but the [TS]

  answer is no they both act like kids [TS]

  would act in that situation to my senses [TS]

  yeah she's sort of manipulated into into [TS]

  believing that the safest thing is to [TS]

  send a way possible [TS]

  katsu for his own good and he you know [TS]

  his response when he's being told to get [TS]

  the hell out is well okay if that's how [TS]

  you feel and I'm out of here we go but [TS]

  he's gonna give him the money and he's [TS]

  so bitter about the money he's gonna [TS]

  throw it away but of course he's a poor [TS]

  kid so we can actually throw it away [TS]

  like his pride is hurt right because he [TS]

  expects to be the hero because I mean [TS]

  even dola throws in his face because [TS]

  they're waiting for me back in this [TS]

  house that I go I guess you couldn't [TS]

  save her right he doesn't he doesn't [TS]

  take the money as a bribe he takes the [TS]

  money because he's he's clearly in some [TS]

  form of shock during that whole speech [TS]

  right not like he's like okay fine I'll [TS]

  take the money and you go ahead and do [TS]

  whatever you want with right guys he's [TS]

  walking home he's like it was going to [TS]

  throw the money off the cliff but then [TS]

  he can't he can't do it because you [TS]

  can't throw away that kind of money [TS]

  might have taken that was much much [TS]

  simpler and and not as politically [TS]

  advance to as much more of like I have [TS]

  this new friend and i have either let [TS]

  them down and/or they have been left an [TS]

  impression that is you know that i did [TS]

  not have a role in how this thing turned [TS]

  out and now this person's gonna hate me [TS]

  that was more i read it was a double [TS]

  throws in his face is all I guess you [TS]

  couldn't save her took the money and ran [TS]

  didn't she is Rush album roaming in his [TS]

  worst fear is worse fear is that he that [TS]

  he didn't do all he could do and that he [TS]

  feels like he was expected to he does [TS]

  not you have been saved her but I mean [TS]

  when you look at the the society likey [TS]

  yes they are sort of doing the opposite [TS]

  gender role things that you would expect [TS]

  but I think the reason that shita is is [TS]

  a special character is because of the [TS]

  fact that she does something different [TS]

  this world has very stereotypical gender [TS]

  roles they even call it out that you [TS]

  know but now we're talking about do [TS]

  later on [TS]

  well your female you know you because [TS]

  you're doing all this stuff i should be [TS]

  able to fly the kite too so I I'd while [TS]

  it's nice that she is is doing things [TS]

  that are are not necessarily [TS]

  the stereotypical you know that [TS]

  princessy things to do the fact that [TS]

  she's doing them is really if she's [TS]

  she's special for that it's not that the [TS]

  society is advanced [TS]

  oh yeah no that's what i was getting at [TS]

  like that that both of them have the [TS]

  same general expectation that you would [TS]

  expect but the events don't let them [TS]

  thaw it into there and it is [TS]

  disconcerting to all involved i came in [TS]

  like even dollar running around people [TS]

  aren't that comfortable with our main [TS]

  she's their mom and like the husband's [TS]

  they're down there in the engineering [TS]

  and like you said they bring it up in [TS]

  the things like wait a second you're [TS]

  gross like well yeah I guess like it [TS]

  they are against the structure of the [TS]

  rest of the world and it is [TS]

  uncomfortable for them there they are [TS]

  people of their time in place put into [TS]

  situations that that don't fit which i [TS]

  think it is the best thing you can do in [TS]

  these types of movies are rather than [TS]

  just pretend imitate even an osmosian [TS]

  doesn't like where she's she's very [TS]

  conservative person in that movie but [TS]

  she is expected to fill these roles as [TS]

  the princess as the leader of the people [TS]

  as the the you know the girl that all [TS]

  the the killed the children gather [TS]

  around its I think it works better when [TS]

  you show a character doing something [TS]

  different [TS]

  despite the fact that the entire [TS]

  surrounding world has different [TS]

  expectations yeah I feel like in this [TS]

  scene neither one of them has any other [TS]

  choice than to do what it is they do so [TS]

  i'm not sure that you can really put a [TS]

  lot of you know agency of them you know [TS]

  changing up gender roles or anything of [TS]

  that sort I mean what is she gonna do [TS]

  she's clearly surrounded by a bunch of [TS]

  adults who can basically tell her what [TS]

  to do and shoot her if she gets out of [TS]

  hand and he's in the same boat i mean [TS]

  he's just been released from a dungeon [TS]

  so well if you decide to sex rider in it [TS]

  and what you would expect to happen is [TS]

  he breaks out a dungeon and save [TS]

  certainly make their escape [TS]

  perhaps I guess one of the things I like [TS]

  in here is that in this section of the [TS]

  film is that we've got this idea that [TS]

  the secrets of the floating city have [TS]

  been passed down from generation to [TS]

  generation using an it's an oral [TS]

  tradition because it turns out that that [TS]

  she knows secret words and phrases and [TS]

  poems that have power when combined with [TS]

  the crystal and you know she uses the [TS]

  the dad to the awakened the robot and [TS]

  later we see more of that I think that's [TS]

  kind of fun the idea that that you're [TS]

  uncovering her legacy and it's not just [TS]

  that she's discovering that she's [TS]

  royalty on this uh on this floating city [TS]

  but that some of these funny things her [TS]

  grandmother told her are actually like [TS]

  super important powerful secret things I [TS]

  think that's very cool [TS]

  that brings up another question I have [TS]

  about the the subtitling because the way [TS]

  it was subtitled in the version i [TS]

  watched she refers to those that is [TS]

  spells and I always thought it was very [TS]

  weird that her grandmother's teaching [TS]

  her purse spells it is it different in a [TS]

  different version or is that actually [TS]

  the closest thing that again but i think [TS]

  it's that spells because I i bet that is [TS]

  the most reasonable translation of the [TS]

  japanese word but i don't i don't think [TS]

  it has the same cultural connotations [TS]

  whatever the original Japanese world is [TS]

  doesn't that you don't mean like direct [TS]

  translation be always like a spell but [TS]

  it's not like a spell because when we [TS]

  hear that we think magicians casting [TS]

  spells so I'm willing to the kind of [TS]

  thing you tell a little kid when you're [TS]

  trying to comfort them on something each [TS]

  other it's a magic spell and if you say [TS]

  it you'll feel better [TS]

  well I kind of is I mean there is magic [TS]

  in this world and these words that you [TS]

  know this is this is another common [TS]

  thing like that you learn a song and [TS]

  childhood the turns out to be a special [TS]

  magical incantation and you know like [TS]

  this is all straightforward stuff but uh [TS]

  yeah I'm totally willing to go along [TS]

  with this and it's easy even though it's [TS]

  a trope and I and spells I I kind of [TS]

  like it when i watch japanese movies [TS]

  where they do the most direct literal [TS]

  translation even if it seems super weird [TS]

  because I get to imagine that I'm [TS]

  actually hearing the Japanese and I [TS]

  could say okay well don't think that is [TS]

  what the word actually is an English [TS]

  just said like this is their direct [TS]

  translation of what the words were and [TS]

  then turn that into what you think they [TS]

  were trying to say like make up some [TS]

  cultural background that you don't [TS]

  understand for which is basically what I [TS]

  did let me do the work myself I'll [TS]

  figure it out i mean i'm already reading [TS]

  the subtitles guys it's not like I just [TS]

  want to sit back and watch a dub exactly [TS]

  i have to go back to the scene where [TS]

  dole is reading is reading positive the [TS]

  riot act for for letting shita saying [TS]

  anything at giant ham [TS]

  yeah well maybe on the giant ham which [TS]

  is also which is also great i mean it's [TS]

  not ladylike how to open a lobster you [TS]

  don't always see them [TS]

  no lady she's apparently lady / cloud [TS]

  but yeah i mean this this right here is [TS]

  the big turning point for the Pirates [TS]

  because up until this moment you know [TS]

  their characters and their bad guys and [TS]

  the thing that changes here is is dola [TS]

  is swayed by positives determination to [TS]

  protect sheet after she's kind of read [TS]

  him the riot act about leaving her and [TS]

  and she makes out at this point like [TS]

  she's bringing them along just because [TS]

  he can help make sure to cooperate but [TS]

  it's clear from the look on her face [TS]

  that she's actually touched by his his [TS]

  willingness to want to save her is the [TS]

  star with a heart of gold [TS]

  there's only I mean it's distant a huge [TS]

  change that happens here I mean it's [TS]

  kind of the hinge point of the movie for [TS]

  me at least I mean you can see all that [TS]

  in her once you watching movies [TS]

  obviously thats all from the beginning [TS]

  to use don't know the number like you [TS]

  did the sons are all still goofy and [TS]

  they're goofy through the whole movie [TS]

  but she is the smart one she is the one [TS]

  who understands the the tactics and and [TS]

  knows how to negotiate the battle [TS]

  between the army and the spies and all [TS]

  that other stuff and they're you know as [TS]

  we will see later scenes there is much [TS]

  more depth are ya then you would think [TS]

  she has depth which sets her apart my [TS]

  memory of this film from five years ago [TS]

  I had her and her but her boys as much [TS]

  more wacky and slapstick then they are i [TS]

  mean the boys are wacky and slapstick [TS]

  and they really like desert by the way [TS]

  they're very enthusiastic i get to lick [TS]

  the spatula dessert but but dola mom [TS]

  mama is uh she is a very interesting [TS]

  character and not a you know zany wacky [TS]

  character at all she's got much more [TS]

  going on which I really like the robot [TS]

  blows a bunch stuff up by the way at [TS]

  about this point in the movie and [TS]

  there's the Army and the robot and the [TS]

  major plot point that happens here is [TS]

  mush could get the necklace and they're [TS]

  going to take the their big army airship [TS]

  the Goliath and find lap utah and [TS]

  meanwhile everybody else goes back with [TS]

  mom the boys to the biggest mother ship [TS]

  mother ship her own ship and head him [TS]

  off [TS]

  it is a mom-and-pop operation it turns [TS]

  out because pop is like tinkering with [TS]

  stuff in the ship that is a mole man [TS]

  stop yelling at me [TS]

  he says the guy from spirited away [TS]

  there with multiple army in the belly [TS]

  that's my favorite part about him is he [TS]

  has a jug that it that is apparently [TS]

  named Ben because it has been [TS]

  yep oh and look at the they all of [TS]

  Mama's boys love shita they try to give [TS]

  them jobs but the boys are like hey I'll [TS]

  let me help you with that and also [TS]

  they'll love to sort when you put on [TS]

  gigantic bloomers it makes you utterly [TS]

  irresistible to men place your age [TS]

  that's pretty well known pirate Rosen [TS]

  has to put our moms clothes and like the [TS]

  size of a tent [TS]

  yeah yeah they fit her pretty well as it [TS]

  turns out though but somehow they found [TS]

  a shirt that was a little yellow shirt [TS]

  that's perfect and the but the pants are [TS]

  not that's dad's yeah maybe so [TS]

  and this is where we see those gender [TS]

  roles again where she's put in the [TS]

  kitchen and was like okay you go you're [TS]

  cooking five times a day these these [TS]

  boys get hungry [TS]

  although she does she does resist in [TS]

  that wonderful scene where I mean this [TS]

  section the movie is really great [TS]

  because you've got all the climb [TS]

  climbing around all over this airship [TS]

  and all that but she she where she kind [TS]

  of like refuses and basically climbs up [TS]

  to the top of the airship to see pots [TS]

  ooh she's not gonna she's not going to [TS]

  shrink from it [TS]

  yep you know about you in this thing the [TS]

  dad is sort of the you know the sort of [TS]

  countdown he's in the engine room with [TS]

  this yes and she's the leader of the [TS]

  Titans his only friend and the ship but [TS]

  she gets shot right into the kitchen [TS]

  right and then and she does come out [TS]

  again later with the kite flying thing [TS]

  you notice is all you can't do that it's [TS]

  not even even dollars going to us not [TS]

  that's not a thing for girls like what [TS]

  what are you talking about you're in [TS]

  charge of the whole ship he's like yeah [TS]

  but she's she's clearly saying that to [TS]

  prod her into doing it anyway [TS]

  yeah i don't i don't know it's hard it's [TS]

  hard to say but I feel like dola is a [TS]

  creature of the same society with all [TS]

  these same roles and she just somehow [TS]

  doesn't see herself she sees herself as [TS]

  a man essentially in this world because [TS]

  him [TS]

  she's in charge but she totally accept [TS]

  the roles like feel your little girl get [TS]

  right into the kitchen [TS]

  yeah this is um one of my favorite [TS]

  little moments in this movie is when uh [TS]

  when scheana and pots who are up on the [TS]

  top of the of the ship is easy [TS]

  he's taken over the watch and the other [TS]

  guys a lot of detail here that's really [TS]

  great to the the other guy is waiting [TS]

  and they tell him to put on you know put [TS]

  on a jacket because it's really cold up [TS]

  there up there it's dark your loan it's [TS]

  when any other guys like oh great you [TS]

  know he's relieved to be off of duty and [TS]

  then she goes up there and the the art [TS]

  direction of just the details [TS]

  this of this steampunk airship or so [TS]

  it's so great and then there's that [TS]

  moment where they are from up above the [TS]

  cloud layer and like like a whale or a [TS]

  shark or something down in the cloud [TS]

  layer there's the realization that the [TS]

  Goliath is right below them [TS]

  that is a beautiful shot that I really [TS]

  like and of course it's also a dramatic [TS]

  moment the movie because it's like oh [TS]

  the Goliath is here and then lots of [TS]

  crazy stuff is in the nebula [TS]

  yeah exactly what before that I want [TS]

  that when they're up there on the thing [TS]

  you got dola down there listening to [TS]

  them oh god yeah the whole sequence [TS]

  where oh yeah yeah I love that always [TS]

  listening [TS]

  she's listening in and the expressions [TS]

  on your face then eventually going to [TS]

  start getting to like the part where [TS]

  they may be going to get all mushy she [TS]

  she politely is about to like close the [TS]

  thing and say okay well i'm not gonna [TS]

  listen anymore out of privacy is such a [TS]

  great because I'm having line she's just [TS]

  there and you can hear expression and [TS]

  look at her as she listened to them [TS]

  because they're talking about her [TS]

  they don't know she's listening but [TS]

  she's just just listening to their [TS]

  relationship and what they think of her [TS]

  and everything like that and eventually [TS]

  she's just like now just let them up [TS]

  then you know that the client comes in [TS]

  yeah thing that I think is what makes it [TS]

  clear that they're supposed to be maybe [TS]

  11 or 12 or so because there's so many [TS]

  sequences where you know they put on the [TS]

  same poncho or whatever to stay warm or [TS]

  he picks her up and carries her off to [TS]

  look over the edge on the Buddha and I [TS]

  mean those are clear scenes where in [TS]

  movies where they were slightly older [TS]

  they would suddenly be like a romantic [TS]

  moment or a moment of awkwardness right [TS]

  but there's there's none of that all [TS]

  they're just two friends looking at you [TS]

  and then they get that reading skipped [TS]

  over this but that highlights the [TS]

  weirdness of the the sun's being all I [TS]

  want to help cheetah and I think like [TS]

  you're someone explain this attempt to [TS]

  myself not because you see this in a lot [TS]

  of Japanese movies the impression i get [TS]

  as a complete outsider not knowing [TS]

  anything about this is just having seen [TS]

  a lot of Japanese animation that is more [TS]

  accepted that that men will find young [TS]

  girls beautiful not perhaps in like a [TS]

  sexual way [TS]

  although perhaps that way as well but in [TS]

  general that it is that that's a hand [TS]

  baby right men and so in this movie for [TS]

  them to be comically head over heels for [TS]

  wanting to help her in the kitchen which [TS]

  is up as a funny scene of like everyone [TS]

  the school wants to help out she was [TS]

  going to be the one doing and she gets [TS]

  puts them all to work but the fact that [TS]

  they're all gaga over her doesn't make [TS]

  sense to us for a Western perspective [TS]

  but we see this amigo danger danger like [TS]

  it's not this is not correct are [TS]

  acceptable but in this movie it's played [TS]

  as like well everybody knows this is a [TS]

  thing and look isn't just a sweet [TS]

  innocent in the same way that the two [TS]

  are two leads are just sweet innocent [TS]

  with each other hand and it is jarring [TS]

  and it just it doesn't fit into my brain [TS]

  or my expectations for anything and it's [TS]

  it's creepy but because it's played so [TS]

  matter-of-factly because I've seen it so [TS]

  many times before and was like I guess [TS]

  is they just think this is okay and it's [TS]

  just expected [TS]

  I don't know my hope is that these guys [TS]

  are actually only supposed to be about [TS]

  maybe 17 or 18 themselves so it's not as [TS]

  I also really interesting it does a [TS]

  little [TS]

  I mean it depends on it depends on how [TS]

  old they're weirdos and they're not very [TS]

  bright and they live on a ship on an [TS]

  airship with their mom and the only [TS]

  woman in their life that they ever seen [TS]

  and mom has clearly said when you get [TS]

  married you need to find someone like [TS]

  she tried sure right because she's mushy [TS]

  like me so maybe they just [TS]

  misinterpreted that [TS]

  yeah she found the measure not very [TS]

  bright to again but they really like [TS]

  dessert is what I'm saying they're not [TS]

  very bright but they really like deserve [TS]

  these scenes really reminds me of [TS]

  futurama with mom and her kids or three [TS]

  times like I kept thinking about [TS]

  futurama and so I think I have a little [TS]

  bit of that headcanon that makes it okay [TS]

  because in futurama those kids are [TS]

  really messed up for a lot of reasons [TS]

  and and so I think that I've got a [TS]

  little bit of crossover in that that [TS]

  makes it a little bit more okay in my [TS]

  head but these are pirates were talking [TS]

  about they're not good people [TS]

  I mean and again in the movie she is not [TS]

  fazed by this at all [TS]

  she is not she's not intimidated or [TS]

  scared or worried about she puts them to [TS]

  work immediately [TS]

  no because she sees it as a way to get [TS]

  other people to peel the damn potatoes [TS]

  right and she's smart she is she has [TS]

  this daunting task and she rolled up her [TS]

  sleeves and she gets to it and just [TS]

  heard possible just so sweet together [TS]

  again like there's never any any [TS]

  romantic tension between them [TS]

  we're just good friends who care about [TS]

  each other if they never tease you with [TS]

  anything more than that and it's just so [TS]

  sweet and innocent that you know [TS]

  especially from the respective a kid [TS]

  watching we it all plays office [TS]

  perfectly explicable and i would imagine [TS]

  all that have not interrogating my kids [TS]

  about that they it hasn't even occurred [TS]

  to them to be creeped out in fact that [TS]

  the bombs you know sons are all over [TS]

  it's a cartoon and they're goofy and [TS]

  that's I just let it go [TS]

  I just don't think it's that it's all [TS]

  there such caricatures yeah that's the [TS]

  really the saving grace is because [TS]

  they're squash and stretchers and [TS]

  they're clearly not meant to be [TS]

  realistic in any way shape or form still [TS]

  gross though i would say actually this [TS]

  is a part of the movie that feels the [TS]

  most not the most miyazaki like it's [TS]

  like the it's just like it's miyazaki [TS]

  gonna miyazaki here this is the thing [TS]

  because it's like the Goliath is there [TS]

  we've got this kind of like act [TS]

  we've got this kind of like act [TS]

  action sequence happening between the [TS]

  Goliath and-and-and-and mom's ship and [TS]

  they put they fly up on their little [TS]

  kind of like kite thing that they have [TS]

  there's the crazy storm there's clouds [TS]

  everybody incredibly dangerous looking [TS]

  kite thing like a in in the in the realm [TS]

  of like ridiculous machines that [TS]

  probably wouldn't work and also would be [TS]

  incredibly dangerous hey there's a [TS]

  there's a totally crazy store looks like [TS]

  a hurricane yeah why don't we send two [TS]

  kids up in a hang glider tied to the [TS]

  shot at by a rope with a winch yeah [TS]

  also they have controls but i have no [TS]

  indication that they actually do [TS]

  anything I think just different [TS]

  expertise to each other so they don't [TS]

  fall how it's going to get the rest [TS]

  classic pirate stuff right there [TS]

  yeah but it's very exciting that it's [TS]

  also just like it's miyazaki being like [TS]

  yeah one airship two airships a third [TS]

  flying vehicle clouds and then finally I [TS]

  mean it's a nice moment for pots because [TS]

  he's like I you know I know this locket [TS]

  I is inside those clouds and that's the [TS]

  that's the thing that I'm unlocks it but [TS]

  it's just it'sit's more air aerial [TS]

  action from miyazaki because that is his [TS]

  thing he loves it and it also look at [TS]

  the beginning of the the scene in The [TS]

  Kite when they're they're launching it [TS]

  is my one of my favorite cheetah moments [TS]

  because you know she's it it's actually [TS]

  just after dola says you know that's not [TS]

  a thing for girls to do and she throws [TS]

  it back in her face and then she's like [TS]

  web but wont when you're gone [TS]

  once you detach your gonna have to use [TS]

  the phone to talk to me and immediately [TS]

  the phone rings picks up but it's like [TS]

  wow she really is good i think she's [TS]

  gotta go shi de that's right and so so [TS]

  they it's a great action sequence and [TS]

  then we are at laputa of the castle in [TS]

  the sky this city that is floating [TS]

  inside this I was trying to think like [TS]

  if they're inside the big hurricane [TS]

  cloud all the time i was wondering what [TS]

  life is like a lot better because that [TS]

  means that they don't have a lot of [TS]

  sunlight I guess because there's a whole [TS]

  big cloud around them all the time or [TS]

  sunlight comes from the top or maybe I [TS]

  know but it was a defense that was a [TS]

  defense mechanism because remember the [TS]

  clouds went away afterward yeah the [TS]

  shields are up so when she arrives [TS]

  they'll clear out you can only get [TS]

  through if if ghost dad lead you through [TS]

  the lightning [TS]

  I think that was creeping interesting [TS]

  like legs seeing you know that his [TS]

  father came this way before whether [TS]

  that's literally something [TS]

  or whether it's just his memory i like [TS]

  that moment of like this is what this is [TS]

  what my father did that pot so I think [TS]

  he's been struck by lightning at that it [TS]

  could be illuminating could be or they [TS]

  could be that there's some sort of time [TS]

  vortex inversion layer between though [TS]

  that's what it is you probably want it's [TS]

  clear i mean science really obvious it's [TS]

  a great reveal because the kite sort of [TS]

  plops down on the little platform and [TS]

  the clouds are floating by it at ankle [TS]

  level because of course they're up in [TS]

  the sky and just that the way this is [TS]

  drawn as like this beautiful castle [TS]

  floating in the sky but so clearly [TS]

  overgrown with everything and just the [TS]

  birds flapping around the moss and the [TS]

  grass over everything it's a place where [TS]

  you would love to hang out I like that [TS]

  they have their moment to themselves [TS]

  when we don't think about the fact that [TS]

  Goliath is still out there and the [TS]

  Pirates are have just been shot down you [TS]

  know they've got maybe five to ten [TS]

  minutes to walk around and discover [TS]

  shocked that a miyazaki movie has a [TS]

  giant tree at the center of everything [TS]

  but they have that time when we just [TS]

  ignore the fact that [TS]

  oh yeah the clouds probably blew away [TS]

  because the Goliath has come in and [TS]

  there's probably some you know some [TS]

  exploding of the city happening but we [TS]

  get that that sort of brief respite [TS]

  where they just get to explore I think [TS]

  that's we have the flowers the the robot [TS]

  finds the bird eggs that has to protect [TS]

  from light [TS]

  yeah more robots that makes me very [TS]

  happy there they're robots that have [TS]

  been there awhile and they're covered [TS]

  with plants and moss on your fuzzy fuzzy [TS]

  robot little fox squirrels upright as [TS]

  ago you know i love the fox squirrels [TS]

  this is the scene the everytime i watch [TS]

  it it makes my heart hurt and everytime [TS]

  i watch this movie and I forget and then [TS]

  I see the scene and my heart just hurts [TS]

  because I know I feel sad for the little [TS]

  robot with the giant robot that's been [TS]

  alone for so long and like all these [TS]

  things that it's taken guardianship or [TS]

  was assigned guardianship or whatever [TS]

  and then what's gonna happen you know [TS]

  you know that their environment even [TS]

  though the garden itself survives in the [TS]

  end I know the environment is going to [TS]

  change vastly and all those little robot [TS]

  friends general but friends fall to [TS]

  their doom and all of that degrades in [TS]

  HS little upper [TS]

  garden stays intact we do see that as [TS]

  the tree floats off into this guy [TS]

  yeah but it's like it's the sweet [TS]

  moments but it still is okay lean the [TS]

  robot going on and I told me about it [TS]

  just keeps on going I don't know if he's [TS]

  allowed to go up with the trees it's [TS]

  just like it you know in nature vs [TS]

  machines in miyazaki movie always been a [TS]

  nature and the next 200 years people [TS]

  living in that world are going to be [TS]

  digging up robots and they're gonna like [TS]

  that have landed injury somewhere and [TS]

  they're going to come alive and making [TS]

  friends everybody's gonna have their own [TS]

  robot they've all landed in that [TS]

  gigantic crater that has been made but [TS]

  the mushroom cloud that was you can [TS]

  order on amazon by the way a a planter [TS]

  that is the head of of the robot and you [TS]

  can plant but you know there's no you [TS]

  guys that fell down there too so [TS]

  whatever kind of destruction was wrought [TS]

  will probably be fertilized pretty well [TS]

  on the ocean will be soon come back [TS]

  that's right they were the ocean that's [TS]

  right i forgot they made a point of [TS]

  mentioning that they were over the ocean [TS]

  you're falling into the ocean from that [TS]

  height you're not going to live [TS]

  no I'm just saying like the ocean will [TS]

  swallow up all the debris you know like [TS]

  the romance you know exactly debris [TS]

  that's true when there's the whole bit [TS]

  where he fires off the massive cannon or [TS]

  whatever it is and in there's a mushroom [TS]

  cloud which one it's not it's not anime [TS]

  movie about a mushroom cloud come you [TS]

  gotta have it and and it's in keeping [TS]

  with everything else in this movie [TS]

  because it's the boy's adventure tale [TS]

  where bad things don't really happen or [TS]

  at least they do they happen off-screen [TS]

  where we don't have to see them you have [TS]

  to know that that explosion was just [TS]

  over the ocean so nobody died [TS]

  it's okay except for all the army man [TS]

  who got dumped out of the bottom of the [TS]

  glass for girly yeah they're ice cream [TS]

  and they probably they probably just [TS]

  splashed into this into the water [TS]

  they're okay but they bobbed up and row [TS]

  54 53 miles is yep but this is a I do [TS]

  like the deposit we get it's very nice [TS]

  and then of course the Army is there and [TS]

  ruined everything and they arrest the [TS]

  Pirates and their looting the city they [TS]

  find jewels and treasure and and they're [TS]

  distracted by because they don't know [TS]

  the true power and Mischka goes off and [TS]

  you know he's our true villain here and [TS]

  he's got his own plan that he's going to [TS]

  that he's going to put into [TS]

  well into plant place that the whole [TS]

  thing is beautiful to look at everyone [TS]

  every little bit of it is just beautiful [TS]

  to look at this little beaver creature [TS]

  swimming in the water when they zoom [TS]

  down into the water that is filled the [TS]

  chasms you see these prehistoric fish [TS]

  echoes of a early foreshadowing of ponyo [TS]

  there where this is ancient place where [TS]

  these prehistoric fish swim and like [TS]

  two-thirds of this movie as it turns out [TS]

  is it involves whatever the kids are [TS]

  hanging from falling off [TS]

  yeah yeah this is the animators got a [TS]

  lot of exercise at making things fall [TS]

  apart into pieces rather be a railroad [TS]

  trestles are you know masonry thing [TS]

  Rick's in his house yeah when he when [TS]

  when pots who jumps over at one point to [TS]

  the other side I'll go first and then it [TS]

  just progressively starts falling and he [TS]

  keeps climbing up in that part falls and [TS]

  it just keeps climbing up [TS]

  that's really great there i love the art [TS]

  direction when they go when they get [TS]

  inside there's that really weird inner [TS]

  chamber that's all those floating blocks [TS]

  there's like a control chamber that [TS]

  looks fairly intact but then there's [TS]

  this other control chamber that's just [TS]

  like clotted with tree roots and there [TS]

  are bugs and and a big crystal and like [TS]

  a tablet stone tablet instruction manual [TS]

  on how to run the castle in the sky i [TS]

  guess but i also many different [TS]

  environments that are all beautiful and [TS]

  interesting as we go through it's the [TS]

  it's the blackstone has spoken of in [TS]

  legend sure you heard of it of course so [TS]

  she does captured pot sue is you know he [TS]

  frees the mom and mom and the Pirates [TS]

  and all that they didn't you don't want [TS]

  to just skip over the fart joke Jason [TS]

  yeah that was a fart joke there's always [TS]

  think it's a pretty good one too i gotta [TS]

  say Pazuzu climbs into the window and [TS]

  one of those a you know exploding [TS]

  potatoes gets thrown in after him [TS]

  there's an explosion we see dola rise up [TS]

  off of the ground and smoke kind of [TS]

  emanates from around her fundament and [TS]

  and everybody kind of looks at her and [TS]

  says it wasn't me [TS]

  it's good it's good it's a solid one [TS]

  who's also the point where I think for [TS]

  me I kind of mushka went from a [TS]

  character that I probably shouldn't [TS]

  admit this but I sort of had a crush on [TS]

  to being like really really obnoxious [TS]

  over-the-top mustache twirling villain [TS]

  so yeah whatever [TS]

  but he doesn't care about any of the [TS]

  people who came there with them it [TS]

  doesn't care about the army people he [TS]

  just wanted the Machine and he's going [TS]

  to kill everybody else and it's gonna [TS]

  get a little creepy stuff like oh she's [TS]

  you're going to be here with me because [TS]

  we're both busy he reveals that he is [TS]

  part he also has a secret a la la pita [TS]

  name and is also royalty and he's [TS]

  declared himself he literally just [TS]

  declared himself king and starts killing [TS]

  everybody else is easy [TS]

  he's a doing everything with his name [TS]

  translation is we hear that she's the [TS]

  true ruler what isn't a 2l fake the fake [TS]

  ruler that's what his name translates [TS]

  doing the he won the electoral college [TS]

  there is I well if they're if there's a [TS]

  man alive like then the rule transfers [TS]

  to the man even though she's technically [TS]

  closer to the throne who knows that [TS]

  whatever rules it translator army [TS]

  deployed really in charge seems to me [TS]

  like whoever's got the got the the [TS]

  control of the throne room can can make [TS]

  it happen because nobody's really paying [TS]

  attention but this we do end up with our [TS]

  confrontation where much because there [TS]

  and and r2 r2 kid friends are there and [TS]

  i love this part and the and there's [TS]

  that moment where it's basically like [TS]

  you know just give me he's got the gun [TS]

  that he's used to to to the blast open [TS]

  the hole and go in there and he's got [TS]

  the the crystal and Mischka once the [TS]

  crystal and there's like give me a [TS]

  minute to talk to her and then mr. [TS]

  whisper whisper whisper villain error [TS]

  yeah but he's got he's got a gun and a [TS]

  crystal right so there's this it's sort [TS]

  of like you stand off he's kinda gotta [TS]

  give him and he's like alright then [TS]

  we'll do it and of course that's the the [TS]

  secret plan is that she's going to use [TS]

  the the spell of destruction the [TS]

  implementation which is very short spell [TS]

  very well someone was like one worried [TS]

  about right and also like it's one of [TS]

  those things where like what exactly is [TS]

  the purpose of the spell that destroys [TS]

  the entire city like I know what the [TS]

  self-destruction but like its supposed [TS]

  more comments entire city like is this [TS]

  dispelled that fires the big weapon to [TS]

  make so much about no this is about to [TS]

  destroy the entire thing you're [TS]

  currently floating on John you have to [TS]

  have a spell of destruction if you're [TS]

  gonna have a spell of creation is just [TS]

  how it works [TS]

  I think it's that Aloha hello i think my [TS]

  headcanon here is that what they've [TS]

  passed down across the generations is [TS]

  basically like protection stuff so that [TS]

  if something goes wrong and [TS]

  people do go back to laputa and are [TS]

  using it for evil then this blind of the [TS]

  family can put a stop to it that because [TS]

  they decide to remember they decided not [TS]

  to live there anymore and go back down [TS]

  to earlier so that's what i think is [TS]

  like the spell of destruction is like a [TS]

  last resort because as we see here a bad [TS]

  guy is basically going to take over the [TS]

  the the castle in the sky and that could [TS]

  well have been something they programmed [TS]

  into the crystal just before they left [TS]

  yes i do it might be needed to get [TS]

  otherwise you might say it accidentally [TS]

  that makes perfect sense too because if [TS]

  if you're the people who have you been [TS]

  living in the city your entire life and [TS]

  you're finally you know deciding your [TS]

  it's gonna be hard decision to leave and [TS]

  go back to earth [TS]

  the idea of actually destroying your [TS]

  home as you leave is probably too much [TS]

  for them but they knew that they needed [TS]

  to build a snow failsafe just give [TS]

  somebody else discovered it later [TS]

  it's like a wall actually checks out [TS]

  because why wouldn't you just blow it up [TS]

  as soon as you took off but yeah it [TS]

  makes good sense because it's been a [TS]

  long time making this the gardens are [TS]

  beautifully really and also want to give [TS]

  the robot sometimes yeah and also by the [TS]

  way this is the place where earlier [TS]

  forecast misguidance gorges a huge flood [TS]

  of these robots is out there was just [TS]

  wanted to take care of the garden and [TS]

  don't know it's like Sunderland you know [TS]

  and they go out with their wings and [TS]

  they're blowing up the Calliope and [TS]

  killing all the army guys I'm more [TS]

  robots because many Republicans Trump [TS]

  around you don't actually see them [TS]

  plug-in it's in the same vein where you [TS]

  don't actually see any of the murder and [TS]

  awfulness and people just kind of far [TS]

  out of the the Catholic we come out with [TS]

  their wings like it it's like a swarm of [TS]

  them they're all fly and don't become [TS]

  too they're attacking the Goliath true [TS]

  which person to flames but if they're [TS]

  probably non-lethal and arrow cancer [TS]

  they slowly float to the ground and [TS]

  probably purchase between two buildings [TS]

  where somebody has to come out right [TS]

  so the destruction of pappadeaux is a [TS]

  great exercise and these animators [TS]

  drawing blocks yep falling apart in [TS]

  beautiful patterns and you know tumbling [TS]

  over each other it's like like animator [TS]

  school with like basic shapes and just [TS]

  you know take them to the nth degree [TS]

  yeah there's a real tetris field is / 3d [TS]

  Tetris it is the big version of that [TS]

  that thing where the party was climbing [TS]

  up and things keep falling off now it's [TS]

  like the whole but it's not the whole [TS]

  city that one of the things I really [TS]

  like about this destruction and I [TS]

  every time i watch this movie i'm [TS]

  reminded of it is is the the tree and [TS]

  you know remains it's like the core of [TS]

  the city is this tree and it still gets [TS]

  to float around it's just all the stuff [TS]

  the course of history remains this is a [TS]

  miyazaki exactly i mean and as the idea [TS]

  is like when they left that tree was [TS]

  just like the central tree right but you [TS]

  leave for a few hundred years and that [TS]

  tree is now the whole thing we have [TS]

  roots go everywhere they're constantly [TS]

  fighting with the roots in the various [TS]

  scenes party was saved by root when he's [TS]

  like on the route that's wrapping around [TS]

  the bottom he comes back into the bottom [TS]

  kind of like Luke trying to climb up [TS]

  through the the thing at the bottom of [TS]

  the best friend only 52 makes it because [TS]

  he uses bare feet that's in the cute [TS]

  thing where he takes up the sox to get a [TS]

  better grip and he's he's running around [TS]

  with his bare feet but a little monkey [TS]

  feet like gripping onto things like [TS]

  bunnies jumping up trying to i get back [TS]

  to shoot at worming his way through [TS]

  these little holes that he blasted the [TS]

  wood with his they do a good thing [TS]

  without giving him like three bullets in [TS]

  your counting them as he uses them so [TS]

  you know he's got the one bullet to make [TS]

  the hole in the one bolt for this and [TS]

  then you know he's out of ammo later [TS]

  it's a nice a nice sequence although i [TS]

  feel like in the inner chamber she [TS]

  doesn't have anything to do [TS]

  she's fans there listens to the mustache [TS]

  twirling guy do his thing [TS]

  well she just tried to stop him from [TS]

  killing all the army guys you do see [TS]

  some of that but then she gets smacked [TS]

  for it and she does get shot in the back [TS]

  kind of like he's running after he [TS]

  shoots but she actually just trips you [TS]

  might think he just shot her dead now [TS]

  she's fine she gets back up i remember [TS]

  seeing that and thinking wow that's a [TS]

  bold move to have her she scratches on [TS]

  the back at the end of the credits but [TS]

  eventually of course that tree lands and [TS]

  takes root in Japan and totoro moves in [TS]

  and there's a cat bus and also some corn [TS]

  is left at some hospital all fits [TS]

  together and I i feel like the climax of [TS]

  this movie is one of the what one of the [TS]

  many things that I feel like slots it [TS]

  and for me below Nozick acknowledging it [TS]

  does almost all the same things but in a [TS]

  way that I find more pleasing is in [TS]

  general more sophisticated and more you [TS]

  know self-serious unless squash and [TS]

  stretch because that the climax of the [TS]

  movie is them saying the spell together [TS]

  that destroys it and defeats are much [TS]

  just chillin villain but by that point [TS]

  like everything else had been stripped [TS]

  away we only care about this one evil [TS]

  guy getting the city once you eliminate [TS]

  him it's like out [TS]

  well I guess we're done then be [TS]

  the army guys for taking care of earlier [TS]

  and you two are safe and you've defeated [TS]

  the one guy and now you just have the [TS]

  big floating city and it you know it's [TS]

  like they don't know how to end it like [TS]

  and floating three credits [TS]

  yeah well you end it with a scooby-doo [TS]

  sound effect Isis i did my notes are [TS]

  much less from the very end of the film [TS]

  because it's just sort of there's the [TS]

  action and it happens and then in the [TS]

  end they pull the self-destruct lever [TS]

  basically and it all and everybody's [TS]

  okay and you know they they leave they [TS]

  kind of a kind away at the end and roots [TS]

  save them because trees are our friends [TS]

  at the Pirates at some point that we [TS]

  never saw we're able to make off with [TS]

  some treasure although i have no idea [TS]

  when that was never part of the closer i [TS]

  stealing putting in their pockets [TS]

  immediately connect all the little bug [TS]

  ships together in a little wacky [TS]

  centipedes group gets nude and the any [TS]

  land there little of their little tight [TS]

  they'd land there and they're like it's [TS]

  totally overloaded and then part Sioux [TS]

  and she to come in they're like all [TS]

  right I guess we'll get you can come on [TS]

  board to but they've got their jewels [TS]

  that they're gonna what I like about [TS]

  that is like we've come to like the [TS]

  pirate family and here it's like they're [TS]

  gonna be fine even if even a pop kind of [TS]

  want and shit [TS]

  yeah yeah because I got all those jewels [TS]

  and stuff they're gonna be fine never [TS]

  had it all had no mind to the fact that [TS]

  the mining community from which positive [TS]

  hails is spreading out of mining things [TS]

  and is probably going to starve to death [TS]

  at every movie yeah we should ignore [TS]

  that all of that glowing stuff was [TS]

  causing terrible environmental carnage [TS]

  so they really need to stop lining its [TS]

  before the best hearing noises all [TS]

  mining town should move back to like you [TS]

  know the hills are alive with the sound [TS]

  of music where she is from because that [TS]

  place is beautiful [TS]

  she's there with the yaks on the grass [TS]

  covered Hill as the scenic mountains [TS]

  around what do you feel about raising [TS]

  yaks whatever she's doing she was able [TS]

  to support herself and it was way nicer [TS]

  than this crater infested gash in the [TS]

  earth filled with trains know maybe [TS]

  maybe that's where they'll end up with [TS]

  that that's where they'll end up well so [TS]

  this is the the end yes trees are our [TS]

  friends if they save the day of tree is [TS]

  floating in the sky perhaps there is a [TS]

  total virgin air from the usual miyazaki [TS]

  I know exactly [TS]

  alright so there's some great things i [TS]

  gotta mention that i did not feel like [TS]

  interrupting the flow of the podcast [TS]

  with little details that I loved [TS]

  there's the bit where shita is [TS]

  descending from the heavens and her body [TS]

  suddenly regains gravity [TS]

  yeah that is raising its heavy this rule [TS]

  animation I've seen you can find you [TS]

  look very very careful next time in his [TS]

  knees it already but it's like you know [TS]

  it's about to happen you know you see [TS]

  the crystal suddenly dimming and then [TS]

  suddenly all overweight lands on him as [TS]

  ridiculous as his his response to it is [TS]

  you can feel that when she when she [TS]

  suddenly gains weight crazy i got the [TS]

  other thing where he's working the break [TS]

  it like this all you got to you to work [TS]

  the the thing for the elevator right and [TS]

  he's you know this like maybe the first [TS]

  or second time he gets to write a letter [TS]

  to do is they're concentrating and he's [TS]

  doing and his little tongue sticking out [TS]

  of the corner of his mouth when he gets [TS]

  distracted by just seeing her feet about [TS]

  you know but she's still up there on the [TS]

  platform yeah it looks up at her feet [TS]

  for a second as one with the break [TS]

  lots of the lots of subtle moments in [TS]

  there that you know that you see it much [TS]

  more in later movies where they don't [TS]

  oversell it [TS]

  that whole thing is great because it's [TS]

  like oh yeah girl fell from the sky [TS]

  right but I got a difficult job and you [TS]

  trying to tell me boss the boss the [TS]

  girls like yeah yes dear whatever blah [TS]

  we're all going to starve I got things [TS]

  to worry about it [TS]

  there's also another great little detail [TS]

  i liked the bit where she hands the [TS]

  crystal through the wall to him and he [TS]

  put in my mouth so that it can blow a [TS]

  hole through the wall so we can get [TS]

  through and there's a couple of little [TS]

  bits where he opens his mouth slightly [TS]

  lineup is shot and you can his mouth [TS]

  closed a little close the crystal insect [TS]

  terrific and the last thing I promised [TS]

  last thing I love the sequence where [TS]

  dola passes out on her sky mosquito [TS]

  because she got hit by a pitch and [TS]

  angling this is attached by the thing to [TS]

  her belt so good and he's got to reach [TS]

  around her and of course she wakes up at [TS]

  the exact right moment and puts one hand [TS]

  on his head and it's just for the [TS]

  control with the other hand she's got a [TS]

  broken goggle like the glass tanks off [TS]

  of it and just look right and he said no [TS]

  is that only animemovies male Miyazaki's [TS]

  flying things make that neither not [TS]

  because we made that noise many times so [TS]

  I'm interested what everybody over also [TS]

  we heard from John there how he ranks [TS]

  this you know in terms of miyazaki at [TS]

  least we know John that did that it's [TS]

  it's a it's below nastya for you [TS]

  yeah it is is a like it does so many [TS]

  things the nausea does like i'm gonna [TS]

  say it's the same movie because clearly [TS]

  the settings different but it is is that [TS]

  in the genres of music movies there is [TS]

  the the wacky kids movies which is a [TS]

  whole section over there you've got the [TS]

  latter day I a little bit more artsy my [TS]

  kids really like how and spirited away [TS]

  and stuff and then in in the eighties [TS]

  you have these movies that are like [TS]

  adventure movies with varying degrees of [TS]

  seriousness and among them [TS]

  la posada has many things going for it i [TS]

  love the musical of the opening [TS]

  sequences great things in the middle but [TS]

  overall it feels less sophisticated to [TS]

  me then has got a lot of musical feels [TS]

  more fully realized and if you like this [TS]

  story has a more satisfying climax and [TS]

  conclusion and most damningly this movie [TS]

  does not have a post-credit sequence [TS]

  agility how everybody ended up in a [TS]

  bunch of cute montages anything that the [TS]

  only thing that matters is how the tree [TS]

  ended up you should not sure I don't [TS]

  care about that really floating entry [TS]

  through all phases of the day and [TS]

  talking about the the cartoonishly [TS]

  curved it so this one feels more like a [TS]

  trifle to me and if this was the only [TS]

  one that existed i would love it but [TS]

  when the not because they're as well I [TS]

  feel like this is just you know poor [TS]

  man's mask wow yeah I kind of thought [TS]

  that the tree was gonna die at the end [TS]

  because it got so far away from the [TS]

  earth there's no oxygen left plenty of [TS]

  Sun plenty of you don't need oxygen when [TS]

  you got a theory of yeah exactly right [TS]

  propellers for that matter but we put [TS]

  them on anyway carbon dioxide again [TS]

  alright Steve what about you how do you [TS]

  how do you feel overall the castle in [TS]

  the sky [TS]

  where's this rank you know I I like this [TS]

  a lot i thought it was I just like the [TS]

  the tone of it was a romp and nautica is [TS]

  not I actually like this better than [TS]

  Oscar because of that and I also like [TS]

  the lack of complexity i think it's it's [TS]

  nice to have a film that's just really [TS]

  legitimately an adventure tale and it [TS]

  doesn't really attempt to be anything [TS]

  more than that it's strangely enough it [TS]

  took me a little while to get into it [TS]

  but once I did I really enjoyed it but [TS]

  yeah I really dug it [TS]

  I'm not sure how it sits with say keys [TS]

  and totoro [TS]

  because those are kind of off by [TS]

  themselves they're not really the same [TS]

  kind of movie yeah they're not really [TS]

  even in the same universe and so it's [TS]

  hard for me to slap them in against that [TS]

  but but but against Moscow which is in a [TS]

  lot of ways a very similar movie I i [TS]

  enjoyed this more just because of the [TS]

  tone Erica what do you think i've seen a [TS]

  lot less miyazaki and previously know [TS]

  she was my favorite by like a million [TS]

  million miles but I actually think I [TS]

  like this better not buy not a ton [TS]

  it's kind of like just by a hair but [TS]

  actually for a lot of the same reasons [TS]

  that Steve said I just appreciated the [TS]

  fact that this was a fairly [TS]

  straightforward adventure story with you [TS]

  know two characters and that was another [TS]

  thing that I really appreciate it was [TS]

  that we had two characters working [TS]

  together and going on an adventure [TS]

  together whereas in now chica it's [TS]

  mostly mostly just her she's really the [TS]

  center of the movie and while I i love [TS]

  that now she has kind of more to say [TS]

  about you know humanity and in that sort [TS]

  of thing there's there's it's in castle [TS]

  in the sky but it's more like a hint of [TS]

  it that's kind of in the background and [TS]

  be the the adventure itself is for [TS]

  fronted and it just it really felt like [TS]

  a lot of the anime that I have enjoyed a [TS]

  lot throughout the years so i mean if if [TS]

  castle in the sky is your thing i do [TS]

  recommend checking out Nadia the secret [TS]

  of blue water it's 39 episodes so it's a [TS]

  heck of a lot longer but it feels very [TS]

  very much the same and apparently that's [TS]

  because the idea was up from back in [TS]

  it's episodic but when you see [TS]

  characters like adventure stories lend [TS]

  themselves well to a bunch of you know [TS]

  25 minute episodes like it is like [TS]

  future boy conan is the you know the [TS]

  prototypical super early example a lot [TS]

  of the lot of the characters the ages of [TS]

  the characters how old is the boy hero [TS]

  in this story lots of anime series have [TS]

  boy heroes like that I need everyone to [TS]

  be dead of course so I'd like nothing [TS]

  better but [TS]

  i will say that now she had the fox [TS]

  squirrel being much more important is [TS]

  this [TS]

  this did not have nearly enough Fox [TS]

  group had so many of them was like nine [TS]

  you gotta love that little bit of [TS]

  fanservice though I think whatever their [TS]

  PA scampered on the shoulders of a robot [TS]

  covered with moss that's kind of that's [TS]

  good that's true yes quantity quantity [TS]

  over quality but yeah actually I will [TS]

  point out that Nadia has a little grey [TS]

  lion cub named Kingu so you know that's [TS]

  another thing you know you to lean what [TS]

  what do you think i'm going with Stephen [TS]

  Eric on this and nossek i like because [TS]

  she's definitely the heroine she's got a [TS]

  lot of agency but it's it's definitely [TS]

  more serious and this is a little bit [TS]

  more lighthearted a little bit more fun [TS]

  little bit more teamwork II and I like [TS]

  that there's a lot of pink pink hair [TS]

  pink pants on everybody feel like dora [TS]

  has insisted because that's her favorite [TS]

  yeah yeah yeah I love that and I love [TS]

  that because you wouldn't [TS]

  and according to you know kind of our [TS]

  expectations of what color she would [TS]

  like pink is definitely not it you know [TS]

  gender stereotyping she's surrounded by [TS]

  men and she makes them all wear pink [TS]

  pants and yeah they slit pigtails this [TS]

  is the end of your past me as I can be [TS]

  44 is up with the cold pigtails she gets [TS]

  her picture shot off first of all poor [TS]

  little thing nothing is worse than [TS]

  having your pigtails shut up dont [TS]

  pigtails could choke a horse [TS]

  they're like this incredibly powerful [TS]

  make that nothing is worse than having [TS]

  your pigtail shot and anyone with the [TS]

  cartoon physics when they are surprised [TS]

  your pigtails go up like there in 10 a [TS]

  or something yes everybody helpfully [TS]

  works in context you totally by it's [TS]

  like wait a second is her pigtails [TS]

  floating yes they are [TS]

  yeah it's there yeah yes so I love that [TS]

  and it's also one of the first miyazaki [TS]

  movies i saw so it's got kind of a [TS]

  special sentimental place in my heart to [TS]

  for the for just that reason [TS]

  so I'm mtm castle in the sky if I have [TS]

  to pit against anything and it's [TS]

  definitely in my top [TS]

  I don't know three or four miyazaki [TS]

  movies and we're all worried about you [TS]

  yeah this is a weird one very strong [TS]

  feelings about this movie because my kid [TS]

  really loved it when she was little and [TS]

  I think [TS]

  this was the second miyazaki movie I saw [TS]

  everything totoro a couple times and I I [TS]

  feel like in the taxonomy I want to [TS]

  slaughter alongside like porco rosso [TS]

  where it's like whoa what is this who is [TS]

  this for [TS]

  but like it's it's very well done it's [TS]

  it's you know it's charming and weird [TS]

  but uh yeah yeah we would not be in my [TS]

  top five but I i do think there's a lot [TS]

  to love about it [TS]

  the music is astonishing I like the way [TS]

  that sounds so mundane I like the way [TS]

  the characters are drawn i like the sort [TS]

  of straightforwardness the almost notnot [TS]

  dizziness of them but i like the [TS]

  straightforwardness of the way a lot of [TS]

  the characters that the two main [TS]

  characters are drawn [TS]

  ya know I i think it's terrific i did [TS]

  not have been quiet this episode partly [TS]

  because i did not feel I didn't love it [TS]

  as much as I just left my side there are [TS]

  others now they get big no-no this is [TS]

  nothing against the movie mean it's like [TS]

  John says I mean how do you grade on [TS]

  this particular curve it's crazy I mean [TS]

  like we just saw the I've seen the [TS]

  trailer for baby boss three times and I [TS]

  want to take my life like you look at [TS]

  this and it's like oh my god this is an [TS]

  extraordinary achievement but it is [TS]

  funny over time as i get older the ones [TS]

  that kind of rise and you know not cause [TS]

  one of those ones were like you know [TS]

  that it's it's so weird and it's so [TS]

  ambitious and it was you know done so [TS]

  relatively early now I have a great [TS]

  feelings like and like i said to you [TS]

  earlier on slack Jess and I such fond [TS]

  memories of you know my kid loving this [TS]

  movie when I was a kid so I still like [TS]

  it a lot i would still highly recommend [TS]

  it but like as I'm drawn to the weird [TS]

  miyazaki I i find myself like just mymy [TS]

  brain is still untangling a lot of [TS]

  things about what spirited away right [TS]

  house i know a lot of people howl's [TS]

  moving castle is not a lot of people's [TS]

  favorite movie but like that movie is [TS]

  strange the weird it is so weird [TS]

  there's so much I don't understand in [TS]

  that movie like what you know and John [TS]

  John explained to me something wise hair [TS]

  keeps changing like a bit like i I just [TS]

  I when it comes to weird miyazaki I like [TS]

  a pedal to the metal [TS]

  I think I think porco rosso little [TS]

  weirder than this one but early charming [TS]

  movie but yeah I i don't want to sound [TS]

  on plus i really do like it and enjoyed [TS]

  watching it but [TS]

  didn't grab me as much as it did a few [TS]

  years ago but i still really enjoyed [TS]

  funny I mean listen to you describe [TS]

  tosca and-and-and describe this movie I [TS]

  think I I kind of agree but with a [TS]

  different result which is nasik you know [TS]

  it is i I'd say more challenging it is [TS]

  weird and there are there it's I can [TS]

  appreciate it in many ways on an [TS]

  intellectual level at a way that maybe I [TS]

  don't castle in the sky [TS]

  however darker and more Graham yeah yeah [TS]

  yeah but it kick will it's not even [TS]

  close to the amount of funness that i [TS]

  have for castle in the sky [TS]

  I love this movie I want to give it a [TS]

  big hug [TS]

  it is not at the level of keeping a [TS]

  totoro because I consider those two of [TS]

  my best things ever made in the sunset [TS]

  the film but I put it above any other [TS]

  miyazaki I've seen I i love the [TS]

  adventure story i love the look of it [TS]

  you get the weird train stuff you get [TS]

  the weird airship stuff I i think it [TS]

  looks great [TS]

  it moves really well it is is it light [TS]

  is it a little bit of a trifle yeah I [TS]

  guess that's fair but it's so it's a [TS]

  really good adventure series so it is [TS]

  unimpeachable mean raiders of the lost [TS]

  ark is a really good adventure story too [TS]

  and that's one of my favorite one of my [TS]

  favorite movies I I can forgive I can [TS]

  forgive a lot for for having it be a a [TS]

  you know there's more to raiders that [TS]

  this is not raiders of the lost ark but [TS]

  it gave me some of those feelings and [TS]

  some of those scenes I so I like a lot [TS]

  although not at the level of of kiki or [TS]

  or totoro really going to see those [TS]

  everything castle kali-aastra there's no [TS]

  I have not [TS]

  well we'll see where it's lots but mmm [TS]

  yeah but it is this this is very much [TS]

  like that in terms of tone but that it [TS]

  but it that one is so much more i'm not [TS]

  gonna say primitive but it's like like [TS]

  prehistoric any way that we can maybe [TS]

  we'll get to it eventually [TS]

  well this is this is a swashbuckling [TS]

  pirate adventure like treasure island [TS]

  but you felt it didn't have quite enough [TS]

  airship yeah we don't have we wouldn't [TS]

  do Howl's Moving Castle we have not M [TS]

  stands my favorite [TS]

  it's my favorite I wonder where we will [TS]

  go next with miyazaki movie club it [TS]

  could be there we could go on a moving [TS]

  castle its paws [TS]
