00:00:11   welcome back to be uncomfortable i'm [TS]

00:00:15   your host Jason still and in this [TS]

00:00:16   episode we're going to be talking about [TS]

00:00:17   video games i have assigned the member [TS]

00:00:21   is my esteemed panel panelists two games [TS]

00:00:24   to play [TS]

00:00:25   it's a tough job that's podcasting [TS]

00:00:27   business playing games were assigned to [TS]

00:00:29   you and we're going to talk about the [TS]

00:00:32   two games and who knows where it will [TS]

00:00:33   lead I don't play video games i don't [TS]

00:00:34   know what i'm talking about here but [TS]

00:00:36   these guys do and first up that laughter [TS]

00:00:39   you heard there that Steve let's see [TS]

00:00:41   let's have been known to play a video [TS]

00:00:42   game or two in his time hi Steve [TS]

00:00:44   I do play from time to time yes Jason [TS]

00:00:47   and good evening to you [TS]

00:00:48   good evening Dan Morgan is also here [TS]

00:00:51   known to play video games in his sleep [TS]

00:00:53   even he loves them so much that's a lie [TS]

00:00:56   i know it's probably true [TS]

00:00:58   yeah hi hi hi jason and i forget i [TS]

00:01:03   forgot my niceties I'm too busy playing [TS]

00:01:05   a videogame to talk to you [TS]

00:01:07   that's a lie is your new hello very nice [TS]

00:01:08   video gamers not well known for their [TS]

00:01:10   social skills section I will murder us [TS]

00:01:14   Tony sindelar is also here he has [TS]

00:01:15   excellent social skills and there's a [TS]

00:01:17   very polite fellow Tony hi jason i play [TS]

00:01:20   too many video games but i'm here to [TS]

00:01:22   talk about them and sell the truth but [TS]

00:01:23   we can always make this an intervention [TS]

00:01:25   it maybe I and we're all here gathered [TS]

00:01:28   to intervene in the life of our the man [TS]

00:01:30   whose life has been crippled by his [TS]

00:01:32   video game addiction John siracusa hi [TS]

00:01:34   John [TS]

00:01:35   actually I'm in the dam or enroll in [TS]

00:01:37   that I just finished the last game last [TS]

00:01:39   night who did not attend tomorrow like [TS]

00:01:42   we doing it is doing and fishing right [TS]

00:01:44   now I will confess i finished one of [TS]

00:01:46   them today I think I saw one of them [TS]

00:01:48   today too man i don't like thursday guys [TS]

00:01:51   right with hell you been at [TS]

00:01:52   I was on the west coast life is [TS]

00:01:53   different there whatever you know [TS]

00:01:55   well these we all finished it unlike [TS]

00:01:57   some other pot episodes of the in [TS]

00:01:58   cumberland which participants didn't [TS]

00:02:00   routers finish the entire it's a review [TS]

00:02:03   of the first eighty percent just wrong [TS]

00:02:06   I mean that's actually how a lot of game [TS]

00:02:07   reviewers doing the play-by-play 10 [TS]

00:02:09   hours [TS]

00:02:09   here's what my thoughts are mhm yes some [TS]

00:02:12   kind of chat room that we're not [TS]

00:02:13   streaming to said he played the first 20 [TS]

00:02:15   minutes and that's what that's enough [TS]

00:02:16   for him tons yeah I don't know this game [TS]

00:02:17   to get that game took some radical turn [TS]

00:02:19   to our game and you can finish it come [TS]

00:02:21   up i don't want people that I only like [TS]

00:02:24   the first date [TS]

00:02:25   the star wars and those are the best [TS]

00:02:26   minutes i'm not looking at a Star [TS]

00:02:29   Destroyer what's the point yeah all [TS]

00:02:31   downhill after that really alright so to [TS]

00:02:34   talk about two games brothers a tale of [TS]

00:02:37   two sons which these are both games that [TS]

00:02:40   came out this year brothers a tale of [TS]

00:02:42   two sons and gone home for these two [TS]

00:02:45   games and I played what I played gone [TS]

00:02:52   home a little while ago and then I [TS]

00:02:53   finished brothers today and we should [TS]

00:02:56   talk about the both i don't i'm not sure [TS]

00:02:58   if there's a link between the mother [TS]

00:02:59   than these are both sort of like [TS]

00:03:00   critical darlings I think in some ways [TS]

00:03:02   i've heard people talk about them on [TS]

00:03:04   release and praise them highly and when [TS]

00:03:07   I said that I had finished playing gone [TS]

00:03:08   home everybody immediately said you [TS]

00:03:10   should play brothers and I do what I'm [TS]

00:03:12   told on the internet so I i played [TS]

00:03:14   brothers too [TS]

00:03:15   well they're both short games which is [TS]

00:03:17   interesting like this is a yes kind of a [TS]

00:03:19   new genre that I kind of dig which is [TS]

00:03:20   like games that you can play in one or [TS]

00:03:22   two sittings games are always do like [TS]

00:03:24   GTA or something you know grant thought [TS]

00:03:26   or something let's say huge and [TS]

00:03:27   sprawling an epic that's like you know [TS]

00:03:29   when they measure it like this game will [TS]

00:03:30   take you 30 hours to complete and kind [TS]

00:03:33   of kind of dig ya on the other hand i [TS]

00:03:35   would argue that these are almost both [TS]

00:03:37   not games in the there's not a whole lot [TS]

00:03:39   of actual gameplay at him [TS]

00:03:41   what are they then what are no neasden [TS]

00:03:43   Steve I don't know there's a line [TS]

00:03:45   somewhere the college's define games and [TS]

00:03:47   say what is really boring i just like to [TS]

00:03:51   thank them more and for going back and [TS]

00:03:53   explain what GTA stood for things like [TS]

00:03:57   hugs find they are i don't know who are [TS]

00:03:59   excellent he just said that an epic game [TS]

00:04:02   is 30 hours long so is already losing [TS]

00:04:04   credit fast [TS]

00:04:05   I'm i meant double digits but there's a [TS]

00:04:08   lot of hate already here i'll agree with [TS]

00:04:10   you Justice with journey which I one of [TS]

00:04:12   the motivating factors that I had for [TS]

00:04:13   playing of course was that john loves [TS]

00:04:15   journey but one of the things he said [TS]

00:04:16   about it he especially loves by the way [TS]

00:04:19   their their seminal album brace on radio [TS]

00:04:22   anyway the john loves journey but he [TS]

00:04:25   said it only takes like three hours to [TS]

00:04:27   play it's like watching a movie at two [TS]

00:04:29   hours your life movie and that's how to [TS]

00:04:31   classify the genre like now people [TS]

00:04:33   either of these into [TS]

00:04:34   you know just like two-and-a-half hours [TS]

00:04:37   play journey but the point the point is [TS]

00:04:39   that for somebody like me who had who [TS]

00:04:41   has bought lots of video games over the [TS]

00:04:44   years and has never finish to any of [TS]

00:04:46   them [TS]

00:04:47   I loved the idea that I could play [TS]

00:04:49   through this whole story and and and get [TS]

00:04:52   to the end and I wanted to keep playing [TS]

00:04:54   and find all the little gems and get all [TS]

00:04:55   the little trophies i could do that but [TS]

00:04:57   i didn't have to and those these two [TS]

00:04:59   games felt that way to obviously they're [TS]

00:05:01   small and self-contained and I and I [TS]

00:05:03   didn't get that feeling of frustration [TS]

00:05:04   like you know I'm never gonna play [TS]

00:05:07   through this whole story because i'm not [TS]

00:05:09   going to invest 40 hours in the game [TS]

00:05:10   because i just i'm just not it's not [TS]

00:05:12   ever gonna happen in my life I did [TS]

00:05:14   appreciate the fact that neither of [TS]

00:05:16   these games had collectibles which is [TS]

00:05:17   something that is increasingly driving [TS]

00:05:19   me nuts with games got way too much of [TS]

00:05:21   an OCD touch to avoid actually trying to [TS]

00:05:24   get everything although I never succeed [TS]

00:05:26   and that just makes me feel sad it's [TS]

00:05:27   just a way for them to pad out the game [TS]

00:05:28   so they can have those huge our accounts [TS]

00:05:30   and right and and they only did that [TS]

00:05:31   because they've they felt like it did [TS]

00:05:34   they ever get slammed by consumers if [TS]

00:05:36   they didn't like they felt pressure to [TS]

00:05:37   gain people's like oh we're gonna put [TS]

00:05:39   out a game and we have a story to tell [TS]

00:05:40   that story takes about two hours to play [TS]

00:05:41   but that's not long enough for it's not [TS]

00:05:43   viable as a product for us LOL game like [TS]

00:05:45   that so we have to add stuff like stupid [TS]

00:05:47   collectibles and barriers and then [TS]

00:05:49   finally in the past few years like you [TS]

00:05:50   know what if we don't add that people [TS]

00:05:52   actually like the game even better and [TS]

00:05:54   so that's what this new market of you [TS]

00:05:55   know two-hour-long games it's not just [TS]

00:05:57   the saleable part of like you know at [TS]

00:05:58   all it's the like we you know the true a [TS]

00:06:01   title cost 60 bucks right or something [TS]

00:06:03   like that you know 50 60 bucks i mean [TS]

00:06:05   people will feel like hey why I can get [TS]

00:06:09   a movie you know I can watch a movie for [TS]

00:06:10   like ten dollars that takes up two hours [TS]

00:06:12   i'm going to play a game that costs [TS]

00:06:13   sixty dollars better take me longer than [TS]

00:06:15   two hours right like you get this value [TS]

00:06:17   equivalency I don't want to tell you how [TS]

00:06:19   much I want to pay to play journey but [TS]

00:06:20   like at a certain point differential own [TS]

00:06:22   energy was really on the stoop [TS]

00:06:24   especially with the average age of [TS]

00:06:26   gamers now like up in the thirties or [TS]

00:06:28   whatever it is a certain point it [TS]

00:06:30   becomes more valuable to you to get [TS]

00:06:32   something that you can complete in the [TS]

00:06:34   amount of time that you would spend on a [TS]

00:06:35   movie like that that you would pay more [TS]

00:06:37   than you would if you know i still play [TS]

00:06:39   games like the other were you know me [TS]

00:06:40   and my son and putting like 85 hours [TS]

00:06:42   into a zelda game but I know what I'm [TS]

00:06:44   getting there and then [TS]

00:06:44   I'm arguably getting more of my money [TS]

00:06:46   and my sixty dollars worth out of that [TS]

00:06:47   then i get $15 into this but i will [TS]

00:06:50   gladly pay fifteen dollars for a great [TS]

00:06:51   to our game any day [TS]

00:06:53   yeah alright let's get started let's [TS]

00:06:56   talk about gone home which is from the [TS]

00:06:57   Fulbright company came out is this [TS]

00:07:00   summer i want to say and it runs it's on [TS]

00:07:04   it's available on steam it runs on [TS]

00:07:06   windows mac and linux i played on my [TS]

00:07:08   macbook air on a foggy cold of summer [TS]

00:07:16   day at san francisco and this is a this [TS]

00:07:20   is a first-person game that it really [TS]

00:07:22   sets you up to be that it's going to be [TS]

00:07:26   kind of a horror story because it starts [TS]

00:07:29   off as a dark and stormy night and you [TS]

00:07:32   are you are a young woman named caitlin [TS]

00:07:37   who returns home although her family has [TS]

00:07:40   since she's been in Europe studying [TS]

00:07:43   abroad she's a they moved to a new house [TS]

00:07:46   and it's a big house and it's a dark and [TS]

00:07:48   stormy night and the implication is that [TS]

00:07:49   there might be something scary going on [TS]

00:07:53   in there because you're playing a video [TS]

00:07:54   game and of course that would be what [TS]

00:07:55   you'd expect but regardless of the of [TS]

00:07:58   the story what what you find out when [TS]

00:08:00   Kaitlyn arrives at the front door is [TS]

00:08:02   that there is nobody in the house and [TS]

00:08:05   the rest of gamma gone home is [TS]

00:08:07   essentially Caitlin investigating this [TS]

00:08:09   house that she's never been in which is [TS]

00:08:10   good because we've never been in it [TS]

00:08:11   either and trying to figure out what's [TS]

00:08:14   going on and what everybody's been doing [TS]

00:08:16   and why there's nobody there [TS]

00:08:17   does that sound about right more or less [TS]

00:08:18   it's charmingly set in the 1995 so [TS]

00:08:21   there's there's lots of light and [TS]

00:08:22   written notes and and and answering [TS]

00:08:25   machine messages and things like that [TS]

00:08:26   people don't have you know you're not [TS]

00:08:28   looking at people's text messages or [TS]

00:08:29   emails but right if you have a [TS]

00:08:30   smartphone you would have just called [TS]

00:08:31   like family right [TS]

00:08:33   this game is this game doesn't work if [TS]

00:08:35   you have a smartphone so how many people [TS]

00:08:36   knew anything about this game going in [TS]

00:08:40   jason said right you you said you [TS]

00:08:42   thought it would be like a haunted house [TS]

00:08:43   but did you really did you know anything [TS]

00:08:44   about it I knew that it took place in a [TS]

00:08:46   house [TS]

00:08:47   yeah I avoided most stuff I knew [TS]

00:08:49   somebody said that it was affecting and [TS]

00:08:51   that it was not like most games but I [TS]

00:08:53   knew no details other than that it was [TS]

00:08:55   said in this house that was [TS]

00:08:57   that was it yeah I really expected in [TS]

00:08:59   some ways something that as we will get [TS]

00:09:01   into was not in this key but the spoiler [TS]

00:09:05   horn should go off here because you're [TS]

00:09:07   right it is time let's let's yes let's [TS]

00:09:10   fire off 44 gone home work firing off a [TS]

00:09:14   spoiler horn and please come back if if [TS]

00:09:16   you want to listen to to us talk about [TS]

00:09:18   brothers but for this next interval here [TS]

00:09:21   it comes I hear it coming [TS]

00:09:27   no I kept waiting you know you're [TS]

00:09:29   creeping around corners and I turned on [TS]

00:09:31   you can turn on the lights as you go and [TS]

00:09:33   normally in my life you know i turn the [TS]

00:09:35   light on my turn the light off and I [TS]

00:09:37   kind of moved from the house but it's [TS]

00:09:38   not a game [TS]

00:09:39   don't we all and your light off is what [TS]

00:09:41   like me I mean that's one of the most [TS]

00:09:43   successful things about it for my mind [TS]

00:09:44   like I remember coming home to me like a [TS]

00:09:46   house late at night when I was like a [TS]

00:09:47   teenager and you know my parents are out [TS]

00:09:48   of town or something and it's like yeah [TS]

00:09:50   when turn on every light in this house [TS]

00:09:52   yeah it's gonna be the best thing in the [TS]

00:09:53   game the best joke in the whole game is [TS]

00:09:55   where you come upon the cork board with [TS]

00:09:57   the note to the other daughter and the [TS]

00:09:59   dad is saying starting the lights on in [TS]

00:10:01   the house that decision you are of [TS]

00:10:04   course that sister [TS]

00:10:05   yeah i'm spending the last 20 minutes of [TS]

00:10:07   turning on all the lights in the house [TS]

00:10:08   every single light switch in that house [TS]

00:10:10   lies on the mat room all the red herring [TS]

00:10:12   stuff like the X file tapes in the you [TS]

00:10:15   know living room and all this that I'd [TS]

00:10:17   like it starts leading you down these [TS]

00:10:19   paths of thinking it's going to be oh [TS]

00:10:20   it's gonna be this kind of story and [TS]

00:10:22   yeah there are so many applicable tropes [TS]

00:10:24   that they didn't do anything Jason [TS]

00:10:25   mentioned haunted house but the other [TS]

00:10:27   ones that i had my mind from playing [TS]

00:10:28   other video games with a sampler like [TS]

00:10:30   premises you know unreliable narrator [TS]

00:10:32   this suicide factor psycho killer any [TS]

00:10:36   number of the family members a psycho [TS]

00:10:38   killer body snatchers aliens like there [TS]

00:10:40   are so many possible during travel ago [TS]

00:10:42   that you played games exactly like this [TS]

00:10:44   that when those directions and the great [TS]

00:10:46   thing about this game is one that [TS]

00:10:48   doesn't go in those directions but to [TS]

00:10:49   that it has the playfulness to make [TS]

00:10:51   faints and almost all those directions [TS]

00:10:52   at various points so until it settles in [TS]

00:10:55   until you're totally convinced you could [TS]

00:10:56   be like alright but they're trying to [TS]

00:10:58   take me out you know and they do a [TS]

00:10:59   couple of fake outs like I mean I guess [TS]

00:11:00   yeah there's a creepy neighbor the [TS]

00:11:03   psycho house I got to admit that none of [TS]

00:11:05   that none of the sort of creepy stuff [TS]

00:11:07   really work for me unfortunately because [TS]

00:11:09   i would have loved if it had but i don't [TS]

00:11:11   know maybe i just played far too many of [TS]

00:11:13   those kinds of games but it never really [TS]

00:11:15   felt like it was committing in that [TS]

00:11:16   direction for me [TS]

00:11:17   well I didn't it's not supposed to be [TS]

00:11:18   the nothing nothing jumps out and scares [TS]

00:11:20   you in this game like there's no zombie [TS]

00:11:21   behind a door there's no you know scary [TS]

00:11:24   moment a cat does not race across the [TS]

00:11:25   floor like it that it doesn't do that [TS]

00:11:27   the only thing that was the closest [TS]

00:11:28   thing to scare factor is when you're [TS]

00:11:30   when you're in the first secret passage [TS]

00:11:31   in the light flickers out for a second [TS]

00:11:33   and that's that's a good moment but [TS]

00:11:34   other than that I it i never felt like [TS]

00:11:37   it was going to take a turn anywhere [TS]

00:11:39   other than where it did he is [TS]

00:11:40   re completely because I my experience [TS]

00:11:42   was very different i played the first [TS]

00:11:43   half of this on a plane and let me tell [TS]

00:11:46   you like if you want the full like [TS]

00:11:47   force-feedback experience when you're [TS]

00:11:49   like creeping out like a hallway and [TS]

00:11:51   turning the lights on and you go into a [TS]

00:11:53   dark room and then your entire plane [TS]

00:11:54   like it was like a turbulence tip you [TS]

00:11:57   like okay I gotta stop playing this game [TS]

00:11:58   thank me out [TS]

00:11:59   no I did I did play this game in total [TS]

00:12:01   darkness the new is gonna be one of [TS]

00:12:03   those types of games are turned off all [TS]

00:12:04   the lights and everything but I'm like [TS]

00:12:05   I'm I'm affected by creepiness in mood [TS]

00:12:07   and everything but mostly what got me in [TS]

00:12:09   this game with things where they would [TS]

00:12:10   in a certain point that I had realized [TS]

00:12:12   it's not going to go in all these [TS]

00:12:13   different direction right it's gonna be [TS]

00:12:14   straightforward but then they do things [TS]

00:12:16   like the like the red hair dye in the [TS]

00:12:17   bathtub you have got that was facing [TS]

00:12:19   that direction or even things like you [TS]

00:12:21   know the Attic with the red lights in [TS]

00:12:23   the Attic even at that point i'd know [TS]

00:12:24   it's not gonna be that kind of story but [TS]

00:12:26   I'm still a little weird and the most [TS]

00:12:27   for the flickering lights from the TV [TS]

00:12:29   room when you first yeah and you know [TS]

00:12:31   and the thing the thing that got me is [TS]

00:12:33   when I came home the most was at a [TS]

00:12:35   certain point you open up one of the [TS]

00:12:36   secret passages and you get know you [TS]

00:12:38   think you're down to the basement or [TS]

00:12:40   something yeah basement is really dark [TS]

00:12:41   and there were candles and began any [TS]

00:12:43   game with candles like I you know I [TS]

00:12:44   stopped I went back I got a candle i [TS]

00:12:47   went to get a match to light the candle [TS]

00:12:48   but there are no matches in the [TS]

00:12:49   matchbook and I'm like what am i doing [TS]

00:12:51   and you can't use anything on anything [TS]

00:12:53   else anyway so it was a bit of a fluid [TS]

00:12:54   is not making progress in the game [TS]

00:12:56   basically because I didn't want to go [TS]

00:12:57   down into the dark basement because yeah [TS]

00:12:59   one department is like being a gamer [TS]

00:13:01   it's like look they have candles this [TS]

00:13:03   guy i don't know whether to be impressed [TS]

00:13:04   with the game or just sad for you well [TS]

00:13:06   know because like the part of the gamers [TS]

00:13:08   things I'm I kept looking for you know [TS]

00:13:10   use X on Y like text adventure type type [TS]

00:13:13   stuff like that it was kind of a little [TS]

00:13:15   bit ly none of it was important to the [TS]

00:13:17   gameplay and I figured these candles are [TS]

00:13:19   here like it was the curse of this game [TS]

00:13:20   if you're a gamer so many things were [TS]

00:13:22   interactive that didn't need to be that [TS]

00:13:24   I think that is a pretty fair critique [TS]

00:13:25   their there's all its really again it is [TS]

00:13:28   it a game it's more of this kind of [TS]

00:13:29   mildly interactive experience there's [TS]

00:13:31   always things that look like maybe it [TS]

00:13:32   should be a puzzle but they're not right [TS]

00:13:35   and even other kind of the secrets that [TS]

00:13:37   you find the secret passageways and the [TS]

00:13:39   panels and things like that you can [TS]

00:13:41   actually find those and open those [TS]

00:13:42   before the game tells you to which a lot [TS]

00:13:44   of other games you wouldn't write like [TS]

00:13:46   the parent wouldn't be movable until you [TS]

00:13:47   found the note that says it i mean [TS]

00:13:49   theoretically i looked at it afterward [TS]

00:13:51   you could beat this game in three [TS]

00:13:52   minutes if you click on the right [TS]

00:13:54   stuff you have no idea what's going on [TS]

00:13:55   but but you could kind of jump around [TS]

00:13:58   without being directed where stuff is [TS]

00:14:00   I did a little bit of it out of order to [TS]

00:14:01   actually realize toward the end that [TS]

00:14:03   there was one portion that I had to go [TS]

00:14:05   there was a little corner of the [TS]

00:14:07   downstairs that I hadn't covered and so [TS]

00:14:09   there was something that didn't make any [TS]

00:14:11   sense and i realized i needed to go and [TS]

00:14:12   I have to go back downstairs and over [TS]

00:14:14   the laundry room and then there was a [TS]

00:14:16   whole little threat over there that [TS]

00:14:17   opened up a few things and then I could [TS]

00:14:19   finally go and resolve the rest of the [TS]

00:14:21   game because i just happened to do it [TS]

00:14:23   out of order and that was fine [TS]

00:14:24   sure well Steve must have done like the [TS]

00:14:26   completionist about the collectibles and [TS]

00:14:27   stuff like I'm total i've added the [TS]

00:14:29   gamers or two I did like hundred percent [TS]

00:14:32   completion exhaustive search of every [TS]

00:14:34   rock and cranny and i feel like i did [TS]

00:14:35   the game exactly the order that the [TS]

00:14:37   Gamemakers intended you to do because [TS]

00:14:39   it's the water that a gamer would do [TS]

00:14:40   like go in you know it maybe I took a [TS]

00:14:43   left instead of right first or whatever [TS]

00:14:44   but I swept this game from beginning to [TS]

00:14:46   end and i don't think i mislike a single [TS]

00:14:48   thing and it makes for a very coherent [TS]

00:14:51   story like a reasonably good short story [TS]

00:14:54   but you can I if if this I didn't [TS]

00:14:56   realize the panels would be openable I'm [TS]

00:14:58   gonna get you could totally break the [TS]

00:14:59   story which is racing up in the wrong [TS]

00:15:00   place at the lot of material and I think [TS]

00:15:02   you know you can even mix you can [TS]

00:15:03   experience stuff and kind of strange [TS]

00:15:05   order i mean the answering machine right [TS]

00:15:07   in the front hall has the voicemail from [TS]

00:15:08   Lonni on it and you don't know who you [TS]

00:15:11   are is yeah that's I assumed I was [TS]

00:15:12   intended i don't know i mean i think [TS]

00:15:14   it's i think it's intended to work [TS]

00:15:16   either way [TS]

00:15:16   yeah that was one of the first things i [TS]

00:15:17   hit was this the answering machine yeah [TS]

00:15:19   they know what's going to write to that [TS]

00:15:20   I think there is an argument about [TS]

00:15:22   whether or not is there in order and [TS]

00:15:25   there are differences that I i canna [TS]

00:15:26   you're not endorsed on Rails I don't [TS]

00:15:28   know there's a cool there's a clear [TS]

00:15:29   order and additionally there are [TS]

00:15:31   organized by date speak but you don't [TS]

00:15:33   experience them necessarily are they [TS]

00:15:35   specifically tied two locations or they [TS]

00:15:37   do they cross the Marzano they are they [TS]

00:15:39   are tied to locations i can say this [TS]

00:15:41   definitely because i had an inventory [TS]

00:15:43   items as well but you don't have to pick [TS]

00:15:45   up all them i had to restart after about [TS]

00:15:47   an hour and a half of play time because [TS]

00:15:48   it ate my save game for some reason and [TS]

00:15:51   actually initially i usually I [TS]

00:15:52   appreciate the fact that you have more [TS]

00:15:54   options open to you can try things in a [TS]

00:15:55   different way and the first time i [TS]

00:15:57   played actually went up the stairs first [TS]

00:15:59   because their lights on up there and I [TS]

00:16:01   thought well if I was walking in and I [TS]

00:16:03   was looking for people who are home [TS]

00:16:04   we're gonna go i'm gonna go where the [TS]

00:16:06   lights are clearly on [TS]

00:16:07   so I headed up the stairs and I kind of [TS]

00:16:09   did things a little out of order and it [TS]

00:16:11   was it was still pretty clear what the [TS]

00:16:13   narrative was that was forming there but [TS]

00:16:15   when i restarted it I I realize you know [TS]

00:16:18   it's very clear that they want this to [TS]

00:16:19   be done in a certain order for it to [TS]

00:16:21   make the right kind of sense you know [TS]

00:16:23   for you really appreciate the story [TS]

00:16:24   properly and i actually found it kind of [TS]

00:16:26   annoying that i was allowed to take the [TS]

00:16:28   the alternate route because I wanted I [TS]

00:16:30   this game is so clearly about telling a [TS]

00:16:33   story and I wanted to be told the story [TS]

00:16:35   the way it was supposed to be told as [TS]

00:16:37   opposed to getting it piecemeal it's the [TS]

00:16:39   locked doors and lack of information [TS]

00:16:41   that's trying to put your along a linear [TS]

00:16:43   path and so I don't for making the [TS]

00:16:45   panel's movable unlock doors really like [TS]

00:16:46   look regal or a little a little [TS]

00:16:48   exploration here but we don't want [TS]

00:16:50   people to totally break the game and if [TS]

00:16:52   you don't know about the panel's the [TS]

00:16:53   odds of you and going lighter [TS]

00:16:55   environments like every single panel i [TS]

00:16:56   mean i was picking those I was being [TS]

00:16:57   completionist but I was doing it mostly [TS]

00:16:59   with items that i thought would be [TS]

00:17:00   interactive and I was getting frustrated [TS]

00:17:01   because like every single soda can and [TS]

00:17:03   potato chip bags interactive and [TS]

00:17:05   single-handed box i looked in every side [TS]

00:17:07   of like a certain point you realize this [TS]

00:17:09   isn't resident evil I don't need to turn [TS]

00:17:10   every item over to make sure there's not [TS]

00:17:11   a lot I can be on the bottom that opens [TS]

00:17:14   up there reveals a key you know it but [TS]

00:17:16   once I broke myself those habits i still [TS]

00:17:18   found myself picking on Adams that new [TS]

00:17:20   probably wouldn't be worth it you know [TS]

00:17:21   right it's just it's it's a hard habit [TS]

00:17:23   to break but just throwing cans all of [TS]

00:17:25   that kind of it's kind of like it's kind [TS]

00:17:27   of like a journey where if you play the [TS]

00:17:29   game over and over again which I have [TS]

00:17:30   you see the parts where you can break [TS]

00:17:31   out of it but my first run-through of [TS]

00:17:32   journey I felt like I was exactly like [TS]

00:17:34   me and the game designers were exactly [TS]

00:17:36   you know in sync and everything was [TS]

00:17:38   happening the right time and gone home [TS]

00:17:39   did that a few times because i think i [TS]

00:17:41   followed the linear path and also the [TS]

00:17:43   journals which are either location or [TS]

00:17:44   item-based triggered sometimes like [TS]

00:17:46   they'd be fighting because I'd like a [TS]

00:17:48   tape that I was playing and then like [TS]

00:17:49   the journal would play with Jessica and [TS]

00:17:51   they would fight with each other and [TS]

00:17:51   that wasn't good but like others music [TS]

00:17:54   yeah one or two times though the the [TS]

00:17:57   journal start playing at just the right [TS]

00:17:58   moment and made a very cinematic [TS]

00:17:59   experience like I think was one of the [TS]

00:18:01   last journal things was playing as I was [TS]

00:18:03   racing up to the attic for like that [TS]

00:18:05   yeah the final anything like that right [TS]

00:18:06   that sometimes it really worked anybody [TS]

00:18:08   really worked it was great and it's [TS]

00:18:09   difficult to pull it off it's like you [TS]

00:18:11   know it's like my favorite a recall [TS]

00:18:13   Fincher movie the game where when [TS]

00:18:15   everything comes together and i'll [TS]

00:18:17   answer on the X in the air bag with the [TS]

00:18:18   revelation happening [TS]

00:18:19   like it's really difficult to do that in [TS]

00:18:21   real life and so that's what this game [TS]

00:18:22   makers are trying to do is trying to [TS]

00:18:23   give you a game where they arranged it [TS]

00:18:26   all for you to have some sort of [TS]

00:18:27   experience revelation but also make you [TS]

00:18:29   feel like you are free acting individual [TS]

00:18:31   the entire time that I think that's the [TS]

00:18:32   interesting thing about you have freedom [TS]

00:18:34   you know you you unlock one of the [TS]

00:18:35   journals and you start hearing your [TS]

00:18:37   sister talk to you and it's you stand [TS]

00:18:38   there and listen the whole time do you [TS]

00:18:40   keep continue searching the room do you [TS]

00:18:42   walk down the spooky whore corridor well [TS]

00:18:44   well she continues to talk to you about [TS]

00:18:46   something and you know it's not like [TS]

00:18:48   you're on Rails this is what you're [TS]

00:18:49   going to experience right [TS]

00:18:51   I couldn't stand the thought that I was [TS]

00:18:52   gonna miss it so i had to stand there [TS]

00:18:54   listed all things and I'm gonna go back [TS]

00:18:56   I mean I finish the story i went back [TS]

00:18:58   and saw because there's kind of three [TS]

00:19:00   locked areas you can get into one that [TS]

00:19:02   you have to advance the story and I [TS]

00:19:03   figured out how to get the other two [TS]

00:19:04   which you don't have to and could I [TS]

00:19:06   guess proceed push presumably you could [TS]

00:19:08   open the safe in the basement or the [TS]

00:19:09   locked file cabinet in the office [TS]

00:19:11   without you can complete the story [TS]

00:19:13   without doing that but you miss out on [TS]

00:19:15   kind of bits of it but you know I [TS]

00:19:17   checked I didn't find all the journals [TS]

00:19:18   and i finished the story so you know [TS]

00:19:20   I've got the first and I've got the end [TS]

00:19:21   and there's a lot of stuff in the middle [TS]

00:19:23   that you have to find progress but [TS]

00:19:24   there's clearly other stuff that you [TS]

00:19:26   don't have to find a progress [TS]

00:19:27   alright a brief cutscene inserted in [TS]

00:19:31   arguing podcast to talk about hostgator [TS]

00:21:10   hostgator.com for sponsoring the [TS]

00:21:13   incomparable let's talk about the actual [TS]

00:21:15   story though because like the story of [TS]

00:21:16   this is kind of is not lost ask us just [TS]

00:21:20   the thing i always think of when like [TS]

00:21:21   every character in the story has a thing [TS]

00:21:23   about right like what and obviously the [TS]

00:21:27   central thing is the sisters deal and [TS]

00:21:29   you're trying to share what is this is [TS]

00:21:30   Lucille but every member of this family [TS]

00:21:31   has a problem and I don't know like I [TS]

00:21:35   guess that's is it realistic i don't [TS]

00:21:36   know i felt like if they had [TS]

00:21:37   concentrated more on under the sisters [TS]

00:21:41   story and distracted me less with items [TS]

00:21:44   throughout the house and let me learn [TS]

00:21:45   what every other person's problem is [TS]

00:21:47   never any other things I didn't learn [TS]

00:21:48   what my problem is as the heat up that I [TS]

00:21:50   apparently I'm happy off in your blanket [TS]

00:21:52   around right now you are you're kind of [TS]

00:21:54   a boring person actually can be compared [TS]

00:21:57   to everyone else of the mothers is gone [TS]

00:21:58   with the forestry guy and the fathers [TS]

00:22:00   who is like you know i'm potentially [TS]

00:22:02   ripping off Stephen King a decade [TS]

00:22:03   earlier with this 1963 book and he's got [TS]

00:22:06   that I was thinking picturing the file [TS]

00:22:07   like cigarette smoking man sending a [TS]

00:22:09   science-fiction stories in and trying to [TS]

00:22:11   get them you know and doing stereo [TS]

00:22:12   reviews and going crazy and the crazy [TS]

00:22:14   uncle like everyone's got some backstory [TS]

00:22:16   that itself would make a game [TS]

00:22:17   yeah but your backstories youryour [TS]

00:22:19   apparently the perfect daughter you know [TS]

00:22:21   I imagine Caitlyn has all sorts of [TS]

00:22:23   stories to tell about Europe but [TS]

00:22:24   unfortunately she's got to deal with her [TS]

00:22:27   messed-up family first [TS]

00:22:28   or maybe her story is about running away [TS]

00:22:30   from all that right yeah maybe so i [TS]

00:22:32   don't know I kept finding was with [TS]

00:22:34   trophies and first-place ribbons and I [TS]

00:22:36   kept thinking man Lester she's the [TS]

00:22:37   perfect daughter [TS]

00:22:38   yeah I must really made it rough on the [TS]

00:22:40   younger sister and [TS]

00:22:41   someone has a 3 bring binder fetish i [TS]

00:22:43   guess that's what I'm saying everyone's [TS]

00:22:45   people are single-handedly keeping the [TS]

00:22:46   Portland three-ring binder and portable [TS]

00:22:48   tape player industries in business [TS]

00:22:50   because there's binders everywhere [TS]

00:22:53   everywhere and they have at least 70 [TS]

00:22:55   players mi only one who kept trying to [TS]

00:22:57   turn that tape over and play the other [TS]

00:22:59   side yeah i know i was driving me nuts [TS]

00:23:02   I'd like to turn things around spent i [TS]

00:23:04   pry spent more time in the game flipping [TS]

00:23:05   the cassette holder so i could see [TS]

00:23:07   inside inside yeah then I did anywhere [TS]

00:23:11   else in the game but i really enjoyed [TS]

00:23:13   that I enjoyed that I mean that they're [TS]

00:23:15   the one of the things that works about [TS]

00:23:16   this game for me is it is yes in the [TS]

00:23:19   story or the you're the daughter who's [TS]

00:23:21   trying to figure out what's going on but [TS]

00:23:22   in that on that second level your this [TS]

00:23:25   boy are you are walking through these [TS]

00:23:26   people's lives trying to or you're the [TS]

00:23:28   detective if you want to look at it that [TS]

00:23:30   way you're walking through these [TS]

00:23:30   people's lives trying to figure out from [TS]

00:23:32   all of these found items what the heck [TS]

00:23:35   is going on and you discovered like John [TS]

00:23:37   said you discovered that it's not just [TS]

00:23:39   this main story about about the the [TS]

00:23:42   younger daughter [TS]

00:23:43   it's also the story about the mother and [TS]

00:23:45   the father and and what's going on with [TS]

00:23:47   them in his writing career and-and and [TS]

00:23:50   their their marriage is approval from as [TS]

00:23:53   a his father [TS]

00:23:55   yeah oh yes yeah exactly i think it does [TS]

00:23:57   a very nice job at kind of making that [TS]

00:23:59   feeling unsettling experience right like [TS]

00:24:01   it first you kind of feels like you're [TS]

00:24:03   going through and you're like you're [TS]

00:24:04   trying to solve this mystery of what [TS]

00:24:06   happened to people and as you kind of [TS]

00:24:07   find out for example that you know the [TS]

00:24:09   the answer to where your mother and [TS]

00:24:11   father is you know somewhat mundane you [TS]

00:24:13   know they're not dead or you know or or [TS]

00:24:15   lost [TS]

00:24:16   no but they're in couples counseling [TS]

00:24:17   different couples counseling but you now [TS]

00:24:19   feel unsettled right i mean you kind of [TS]

00:24:22   think that you know you're going through [TS]

00:24:23   other their you know their laundry and [TS]

00:24:25   whatnot because you're worried about [TS]

00:24:26   them and you try to find out their [TS]

00:24:27   location and you end up kind of finding [TS]

00:24:30   more than perhaps you were entitled to [TS]

00:24:32   find somebody that like that part works [TS]

00:24:34   with you being part of the family but as [TS]

00:24:36   that as the journals later say it's like [TS]

00:24:38   all you always know about me right Kate [TS]

00:24:40   little maybe the Caitlyn did but I you [TS]

00:24:41   know we didn't as the game player so [TS]

00:24:43   there's an assume familiarity like the [TS]

00:24:46   actual Caitlyn would know more than we [TS]

00:24:47   do which is bad in the beginning but [TS]

00:24:49   towards the end if you start to identify [TS]

00:24:50   with her then you're a little bit [TS]

00:24:51   freaked out that this is court your [TS]

00:24:53   family that had [TS]

00:24:54   these problems and maybe you didn't know [TS]

00:24:56   about them before so that I do like the [TS]

00:24:57   fact that midway through your thinking [TS]

00:24:59   while this whole family has gone [TS]

00:25:00   completely to hell yeah and if you [TS]

00:25:04   figure God may be that the little sister [TS]

00:25:06   swinging in the attic and deb with the [TS]

00:25:08   wife mom is out with the Ranger Rick you [TS]

00:25:11   know I'm the forest some dad is not as a [TS]

00:25:13   bunch of people you know what that is [TS]

00:25:14   yet the bottom of a bottle somewhere it [TS]

00:25:16   may be walking around in the basement [TS]

00:25:18   and then and then in the end it turns [TS]

00:25:19   out everything's kind of turned out okay [TS]

00:25:21   with order which is cool [TS]

00:25:22   it's just that it's just the horror of [TS]

00:25:23   everyday life Steve yeah more or less [TS]

00:25:26   I was dreading going up into that attic [TS]

00:25:28   I mean when I first walked down that [TS]

00:25:29   hallway and there were the red lights [TS]

00:25:31   that I was like nope gonna get every [TS]

00:25:32   other room before I there [TS]

00:25:34   oh I think Steve's point about the the [TS]

00:25:36   hair dye one that one yeah because i [TS]

00:25:38   just got to that point where I felt like [TS]

00:25:39   all right I kind of know what's going on [TS]

00:25:40   me you fucking looking and there's the [TS]

00:25:42   red stain all over the top and you're [TS]

00:25:44   like oh my god what happened to you and [TS]

00:25:47   then you see the box of hair dye and [TS]

00:25:48   it's like uh okay and I you know I [TS]

00:25:51   wasn't sure also in terms of the idea [TS]

00:25:52   that there are the dates have their own [TS]

00:25:54   little story going on with the different [TS]

00:25:56   parts of the family [TS]

00:25:57   um you know in some ways that was a [TS]

00:25:58   little distracting I wondered if they [TS]

00:25:59   were supposed to be a thing where they [TS]

00:26:01   kind of fit together in some way I mean [TS]

00:26:03   there's its kind of its they leave it it [TS]

00:26:05   seems like somewhat unclear what the the [TS]

00:26:08   father's big issues from his traumatic [TS]

00:26:10   childhood experience but you know does [TS]

00:26:12   that play into the complications and in [TS]

00:26:14   his relationship with your sister then [TS]

00:26:16   in terms of her his unwillingness to you [TS]

00:26:18   know basically tolerate her behavior so [TS]

00:26:20   i wasn't sure if there was an attempt to [TS]

00:26:22   kind of attach these two things together [TS]

00:26:24   in terms of how the stories 50 million [TS]

00:26:25   but the parents are not approving of the [TS]

00:26:27   sister-like show they're there and so I [TS]

00:26:29   don't know how it's not a happy ending [TS]

00:26:31   because the parents haven't come to [TS]

00:26:33   terms that she has run away and I guess [TS]

00:26:34   it's happy for her kind of but you as a [TS]

00:26:36   sister like well now my family has [TS]

00:26:38   exploded live in common right we should [TS]

00:26:40   we should say I think we did mention [TS]

00:26:41   that so what we did what we discover and [TS]

00:26:43   the main through line of this story is [TS]

00:26:45   is discovering that the little sister [TS]

00:26:47   Sam has met a friend who's a kind of a [TS]

00:26:50   rebel you know rebellious girl named [TS]

00:26:56   Lanna Loni Loni Loni who I we get to [TS]

00:27:00   know as as the story progresses and they [TS]

00:27:03   get so they get to know each other and [TS]

00:27:05   they fall in love and so the the so the [TS]

00:27:08   parents are not understanding of the [TS]

00:27:10   fact that their daughter is a lesbian [TS]

00:27:11   says she's going through a phase [TS]

00:27:14   Lonnie meanwhile you know it's not a [TS]

00:27:16   perfect character and and you know it [TS]

00:27:18   and then Lonnie's turns out is signing [TS]

00:27:20   up to join the army and is going to [TS]

00:27:22   leave which really upset Sam and this is [TS]

00:27:24   the story that's being told so you know [TS]

00:27:26   you that that's the I really the core [TS]

00:27:29   there are all these other other stories [TS]

00:27:30   and that's that [TS]

00:27:31   that story unfolds not only as a as [TS]

00:27:34   Caitlyn goes through through sam's room [TS]

00:27:37   but it also unfolds Caitlyn goes through [TS]

00:27:40   a series of secret passageway into like [TS]

00:27:44   like the servants quarters i guess it [TS]

00:27:47   turns out of this house which sam and [TS]

00:27:49   Lonnie kind of like took over as their [TS]

00:27:51   Clubhouse and as you discover those [TS]

00:27:53   secret entries you also find the secrets [TS]

00:27:56   of their of their relationship as as a [TS]

00:27:59   teenager's falling in love and making [TS]

00:28:00   mixtapes of bad punk bands and scenes [TS]

00:28:04   and publishing the readings right he's [TS]

00:28:06   right [TS]

00:28:07   good idea awesome scene follicles should [TS]

00:28:11   have been more computers in this because [TS]

00:28:12   like we had computers in the nineties [TS]

00:28:14   i'm pretty sure it's non-refundable they [TS]

00:28:17   weren't no one night is usually what you [TS]

00:28:19   pick with this yet just about an hour [TS]

00:28:20   before caitlyn got to the house [TS]

00:28:22   a robber came and stole over computers [TS]

00:28:25   yeah well it's apparently they took all [TS]

00:28:26   the VCRs you have the nintendo listen I [TS]

00:28:29   should attach them to go with yeah just [TS]

00:28:32   as soon as licensing restrictions [TS]

00:28:33   because they had all that all the SNES [TS]

00:28:35   cartridges in there but with the crazy [TS]

00:28:36   labels on them and everything [TS]

00:28:38   yeah so I want this let's talk about the [TS]

00:28:40   house just because i wanted to say might [TS]

00:28:43   one of my number one things when i went [TS]

00:28:44   through this game was a boy I would love [TS]

00:28:47   a house like this I've always dreamed [TS]

00:28:48   about having a house with like secret [TS]

00:28:50   stuff in it and this this has got all [TS]

00:28:51   the secret passageways their secret [TS]

00:28:53   passageways everywhere in this house [TS]

00:28:55   it's like houses secret I i know it into [TS]

00:28:58   the square footage for the tax assessor [TS]

00:28:59   like well it seems to me it seems your [TS]

00:29:01   house looks a lot bigger on the outside [TS]

00:29:02   it's like the opposite of the trusting [TS]

00:29:04   ducting there's just lots of big air [TS]

00:29:06   ducts it's not there's not nothing back [TS]

00:29:09   there [TS]

00:29:09   it's the cigarette one and eat artist [TS]

00:29:11   lane but it's it's the you know they say [TS]

00:29:13   that it's the it's the servants quarters [TS]

00:29:15   or whatever but it's just there's that [TS]

00:29:16   moment where i think i found it i think [TS]

00:29:18   i was in the closet in one of the bed in [TS]

00:29:20   one of the bedrooms right and there's [TS]

00:29:21   like things like the button up on the [TS]

00:29:24   ceiling of the closet and I'm like huh [TS]

00:29:26   what's that [TS]

00:29:28   boom rubber room one like whoo secret [TS]

00:29:30   passageway right and that was very [TS]

00:29:33   exciting because I i love that i want [TS]

00:29:35   you know I want that bookshelf that [TS]

00:29:36   slides away and reveals a whole room [TS]

00:29:38   behind it which sadly I'd I don't have [TS]

00:29:40   so I i was thinking this house is really [TS]

00:29:43   creepy and yet i'm really i'm really [TS]

00:29:44   loving all the secret passageway stuff [TS]

00:29:46   that was just on its own i love that and [TS]

00:29:48   then [TS]

00:29:48   oh we should mention too there's the [TS]

00:29:50   whole day inherit this house from the [TS]

00:29:52   what is an old uncle uncle Oscar and he [TS]

00:29:55   has a tragic story of his own to that we [TS]

00:29:58   learn it mostly in the in the basement [TS]

00:30:00   in that secret area all the way down in [TS]

00:30:02   the basement where there's the safe okay [TS]

00:30:05   let me let me ask then [TS]

00:30:06   is this his tragic story alone or is it [TS]

00:30:09   off his and the father's yeah I think [TS]

00:30:12   raising location IE that's what I was [TS]

00:30:14   trying to figure because you know that [TS]

00:30:16   we've got the the darkroom with the [TS]

00:30:18   light doesn't work that's got the toy [TS]

00:30:20   horse in it and right around the corner [TS]

00:30:22   there and the servants quarters we've [TS]

00:30:23   got what is the father's name terry yeah [TS]

00:30:27   yeah we've got his markings on the wall [TS]

00:30:30   of how tall he is growing each [TS]

00:30:31   thanksgiving and then it stops suddenly [TS]

00:30:34   in 1963 which coincidentally is the year [TS]

00:30:38   the Kennedy assassination which suggests [TS]

00:30:40   that maybe that's why Terry's got that [TS]

00:30:41   in his mind so vividly and so I'm [TS]

00:30:44   thinking is this a mala station story or [TS]

00:30:47   what I think I think you got it yep [TS]

00:30:49   where is the note that we're reading is [TS]

00:30:50   his is his transgression that the family [TS]

00:30:53   is so ticked off at him about something [TS]

00:30:55   else but yeah that's that's the feeling [TS]

00:30:57   I got there I was just curious whether [TS]

00:30:58   everybody else thinks everyone that [TS]

00:31:00   seems to be the heavy implication i saw [TS]

00:31:03   other people suggest that maybe you know [TS]

00:31:04   he came out to his family and night in [TS]

00:31:06   nineteen sixties with that doesn't then [TS]

00:31:08   connect is nicely into you know [TS]

00:31:09   everything running with I like the fact [TS]

00:31:11   that they didn't have to nail a nail it [TS]

00:31:13   down because you can that any of these [TS]

00:31:15   interpretations are perfectly fine like [TS]

00:31:16   that's not the point of the story like [TS]

00:31:18   we understand you know they're there are [TS]

00:31:19   problems here and we do we need to know [TS]

00:31:21   the exact details you don't really don't [TS]

00:31:23   really know in fact I didn't open the [TS]

00:31:25   lock things I mean I couldn't the couple [TS]

00:31:27   of them because i had trouble finding I [TS]

00:31:29   open sans locker I didn't open the safe [TS]

00:31:32   in the basement I think now and the [TS]

00:31:33   combination for tonight [TS]

00:31:34   and spend a lot of I was like all right [TS]

00:31:35   I can spend time working on this or I [TS]

00:31:37   can I like keep going through the story [TS]

00:31:38   so yeah used to me [TS]

00:31:41   yep so in the safe and the in the [TS]

00:31:43   basement dan there's in addition to he [TS]

00:31:46   has a nice collection of narcotics there [TS]

00:31:49   specifically morning and then a letter [TS]

00:31:51   to i believe his sister in which dated [TS]

00:31:55   years ago in which you basically you [TS]

00:31:56   know which is quite classic apologize [TS]

00:31:58   area yes yes right his transgression [TS]

00:32:01   without getting into the specifics of of [TS]

00:32:04   that [TS]

00:32:05   yeah well I mean any I think you know [TS]

00:32:06   there's a point to there are [TS]

00:32:08   interpretations and there are things [TS]

00:32:09   that are or are not important [TS]

00:32:11   necessarily to comprehending the entire [TS]

00:32:13   game [TS]

00:32:13   yeah but yeah it is interesting it is a [TS]

00:32:15   layered story which is that if you're [TS]

00:32:17   gonna throw that aspect it I kind of [TS]

00:32:19   wish it actually had some impact on the [TS]

00:32:21   story and I don't really see that there [TS]

00:32:23   was no I mean it doesn't that you can [TS]

00:32:25   imagine like how it makes the follow the [TS]

00:32:26   person that he is and how it out to his [TS]

00:32:29   feet his tortured life and where it came [TS]

00:32:32   from and how he sort of takes it out of [TS]

00:32:33   his daughter are not being understanding [TS]

00:32:35   about that you know like but it works in [TS]

00:32:37   a family dynamic in that you don't [TS]

00:32:38   always know the details of all the deep [TS]

00:32:41   dark things in your very own family like [TS]

00:32:43   that's the one place you're very likely [TS]

00:32:44   not to know the details right but why is [TS]

00:32:46   uncle bobby gone now or like what was [TS]

00:32:48   the deal with these two and those [TS]

00:32:50   secrets died with people and so I think [TS]

00:32:52   it's reasonable for you in 1995 to be a [TS]

00:32:55   look through this stuff and kind of get [TS]

00:32:56   a good idea of what was going on but not [TS]

00:32:58   to have anyone available certainly not [TS]

00:32:59   immediately in the time this game to [TS]

00:33:01   tell you what's the real deal like we [TS]

00:33:03   just wanted to explain to us like tell [TS]

00:33:04   me exactly what happened on the [TS]

00:33:05   omniscient narrator know if it's your [TS]

00:33:07   family maybe you don't know maybe you'll [TS]

00:33:08   never know [TS]

00:33:09   yep and we get I think there's there's a [TS]

00:33:11   lot of little hints like that right i [TS]

00:33:12   mean one of the other things you find in [TS]

00:33:14   the basement is the father's father the [TS]

00:33:17   father has a painting of his father the [TS]

00:33:19   faces torn outfits like the letter the [TS]

00:33:21   letter from his father which is you can [TS]

00:33:23   do better [TS]

00:33:24   you can do better it out you know he's [TS]

00:33:25   got his father of you know signs it [TS]

00:33:27   formally you know your father below PhD [TS]

00:33:30   and it's you know I mean we we don't [TS]

00:33:32   know what happens with a relationship [TS]

00:33:34   maybe he really likes the second book [TS]

00:33:35   problem yeah that's equally much better [TS]

00:33:38   but I mean that there was a really [TS]

00:33:40   really clear line between his his [TS]

00:33:42   father's disapproval of him and all the [TS]

00:33:44   stuff that he was going through and I [TS]

00:33:45   didn't see that there was any kind of in [TS]

00:33:47   vacation that that the potential mala [TS]

00:33:49   station was weighing heavy on him and so [TS]

00:33:52   I just thought that was kind of odd [TS]

00:33:53   well I think it was the 1963 connection [TS]

00:33:55   with like that was you know the whole [TS]

00:33:57   thing where you stick your arm and a [TS]

00:33:58   bucket of ice water and then memorize [TS]

00:33:59   numbers better like something traumatic [TS]

00:34:01   happens to you then like the thing that [TS]

00:34:03   the other thing that happened that you [TS]

00:34:04   list forever linked in your mind is [TS]

00:34:05   always obsessed with writing about JFK [TS]

00:34:07   for the rest of his life and you know [TS]

00:34:08   and they keep it vague but I mean [TS]

00:34:09   there's also i think the idea he then [TS]

00:34:12   has to move back to this house where [TS]

00:34:14   that may have happened and now he's [TS]

00:34:15   falling apart right his yes that was a [TS]

00:34:18   bad choice problem there's the alcohol [TS]

00:34:20   hidden throughout and there's all this [TS]

00:34:21   stuff where you know [TS]

00:34:22   yeah I mean maybe maybe that is kind of [TS]

00:34:24   the source of all this problems right [TS]

00:34:26   maybe if they you know if that hadn't [TS]

00:34:27   happened to them and they were in this [TS]

00:34:28   house his relationship with his daughter [TS]

00:34:30   may be different i can inherit the house [TS]

00:34:31   then just sell it they don't realize [TS]

00:34:32   that the movement yeah i know it's that [TS]

00:34:34   kind of ruined it a little bit for many [TS]

00:34:35   people but they have no their money [TS]

00:34:37   right in it and that's like that was one [TS]

00:34:39   of the first letters i found yeah it was [TS]

00:34:41   a Carol Carol Carol friends like all you [TS]

00:34:44   know I always wanted to mention and you [TS]

00:34:45   wanted a house in the woods and you got [TS]

00:34:47   both right [TS]

00:34:47   yeah I you know you could have imagined [TS]

00:34:49   that they felt they had to go there a [TS]

00:34:52   secret secret passageways got your [TS]

00:34:54   passage with Jason would be there in a [TS]

00:34:55   second email with my hair got murdered [TS]

00:34:58   I don't know Ian ghostly was yours have [TS]

00:35:01   his way there's a lot of capacities hear [TS]

00:35:02   ya talkin about the letters I I [TS]

00:35:05   appreciate the fact that you know we've [TS]

00:35:08   been god [TS]

00:35:08   well you as the the elder daughter has [TS]

00:35:11   been gone for a year so you've got [TS]

00:35:12   you've got a year's worth of time to [TS]

00:35:14   make up you gotta find out what happened [TS]

00:35:16   in the interim the fact that in order to [TS]

00:35:19   kind of fill in all the gaps we had [TS]

00:35:21   letters that were written like by the [TS]

00:35:24   phone phone messages that were there for [TS]

00:35:26   a year ago that somehow never got picked [TS]

00:35:28   up and thrown away I and and then it [TS]

00:35:32   seems like neatly as you're exploring [TS]

00:35:33   the house you're finding things from [TS]

00:35:34   later and later in the year that that [TS]

00:35:36   really kind of took me out of it i wish [TS]

00:35:37   there been another way they could have [TS]

00:35:38   done that [TS]

00:35:39   it's tough not to do that you're not [TS]

00:35:40   going to have it you're not gonna have [TS]

00:35:41   an actual years whether written history [TS]

00:35:43   in an actual house but the only thing I [TS]

00:35:45   think the way you're supposed to kind of [TS]

00:35:47   conceptualizing I don't think they did a [TS]

00:35:48   great job in it which is where that's [TS]

00:35:50   coming from all of the the journals that [TS]

00:35:52   she's kind of reading to you I think the [TS]

00:35:53   idea is that your kind of experiencing [TS]

00:35:55   them even though you you don't actually [TS]

00:35:56   get them all until you go up in the [TS]

00:35:58   Apple you read the polity and all right [TS]

00:36:00   that's that that's the flash-forward [TS]

00:36:02   thing that doesn't bother me it's just [TS]

00:36:04   that it's just the letters the letter [TS]

00:36:07   from the publisher from 1978 that just [TS]

00:36:09   happens to be sitting out in a box [TS]

00:36:11   yeah and I guess maybe someone that's [TS]

00:36:12   kind of a hand waving because like you [TS]

00:36:14   know they've moved in right and that [TS]

00:36:15   adds to the like right now is the house [TS]

00:36:17   of disaster area because it was looted [TS]

00:36:19   or because many years people unpack [TS]

00:36:21   already you know when you may say [TS]

00:36:23   momentous letters like a lot of letters [TS]

00:36:25   you find that are meaningful and you can [TS]

00:36:26   imagine all you want to save this the [TS]

00:36:28   first letters that we got a letter where [TS]

00:36:29   you going to do your job offer and [TS]

00:36:31   things like that right you could imagine [TS]

00:36:32   those could be they haven't been in the [TS]

00:36:34   house for a year they moved recently to [TS]

00:36:37   the house right now they've been there [TS]

00:36:38   for almost an entire year based on that [TS]

00:36:40   first packing slip from the movers I [TS]

00:36:43   just make any sense of it because it's [TS]

00:36:44   all still in boxes have you moved a lot [TS]

00:36:46   it takes a while to get all the boxes [TS]

00:36:48   out it doesn't take a year though to get [TS]

00:36:50   revenge on the people it's the foyer for [TS]

00:36:53   God's sake that's the first place where [TS]

00:36:54   you move the boxes out of so if guests [TS]

00:36:56   come to check out your new digs they [TS]

00:36:58   don't trip over boxy we're going to your [TS]

00:37:00   basement were inspecting it i'm just [TS]

00:37:01   saying i moved after living in the same [TS]

00:37:03   place for five years and there were [TS]

00:37:05   boxes that were not unpacked and let me [TS]

00:37:06   tell you nothing useful in those all I'm [TS]

00:37:09   saying is this game lives or dies based [TS]

00:37:12   on based on whether i can relate to the [TS]

00:37:14   character and whether i can get into [TS]

00:37:16   exploring the house and feeling like i'm [TS]

00:37:18   kailyn and when there's so much stuff [TS]

00:37:20   around that very clearly isn't realistic [TS]

00:37:22   it it took me out of it but you have to [TS]

00:37:25   be ready to be to give into the mood and [TS]

00:37:26   atmosphere like you have to go anything [TS]

00:37:28   I'm knowing that knowing it's going to [TS]

00:37:29   be that type of game and being in the [TS]

00:37:31   right mindset or on a plane in the dark [TS]

00:37:33   and just and i'm going to i'm going to [TS]

00:37:35   give myself to this experience and [TS]

00:37:36   especially if you're played a lot of [TS]

00:37:38   other games you have to look I can [TS]

00:37:40   handle this type of game and I can [TS]

00:37:42   accept it or it just bothers me I'll [TS]

00:37:43   never be able to accept it and I'm i'm a [TS]

00:37:45   total sucker for like slightly moody [TS]

00:37:47   lighting some good music and like all [TS]

00:37:49   right fine you got me I'm ready to go [TS]

00:37:51   and very little will take me out of it [TS]

00:37:52   except for things that break that mood [TS]

00:37:54   and i think they held they held the mood [TS]

00:37:57   they were consistent throughout the game [TS]

00:37:58   they didn't there wasn't a spot where I [TS]

00:38:00   felt like I now you have to do a you [TS]

00:38:02   know a puzzle looks like pipe dream to [TS]

00:38:03   pretend you're hacking or you know [TS]

00:38:04   something crazy thing like that jumping [TS]

00:38:06   a little it was tell you is no no [TS]

00:38:08   platforming right it really means is you [TS]

00:38:10   know it was very consistent and so like [TS]

00:38:12   I said that the thing [TS]

00:38:13   you can manipulate that you are [TS]

00:38:14   pointless they were there throughout the [TS]

00:38:16   whole game and I just had to come to [TS]

00:38:17   accept them but the atmosphere i felt [TS]

00:38:20   like held the whole time and built to a [TS]

00:38:21   satisfying conclusion i thought the the [TS]

00:38:23   ending of it walking up to the journal [TS]

00:38:25   and realizing that you've been hearing [TS]

00:38:27   during the entire game all the things [TS]

00:38:28   that you read later work that work for [TS]

00:38:30   me I like I liked it [TS]

00:38:32   let's let's talk about the ultimately [TS]

00:38:35   how everybody felt about about playing [TS]

00:38:39   this game I I i liked it i enjoyed the [TS]

00:38:42   you know couple hours I spent with it on [TS]

00:38:44   a Sunday morning I thought I you know it [TS]

00:38:47   was not one of those kind of super [TS]

00:38:51   frustrating puzzle kind of game [TS]

00:38:52   experiences it was much more like I was [TS]

00:38:54   walking through and discovering things [TS]

00:38:56   and in more or less the right order but [TS]

00:38:58   I i appreciated this method of [TS]

00:39:01   storytelling and then it was a little [TS]

00:39:03   bit different and yet i was i was seeing [TS]

00:39:05   these kind of interlocked stories and [TS]

00:39:06   discovering in an interesting way and I [TS]

00:39:08   i did like the fact that it submitted my [TS]

00:39:10   expectations and that I was you know in [TS]

00:39:14   the dark and stormy night I was really [TS]

00:39:15   expecting something a little more [TS]

00:39:17   adventurous than I actually got but i [TS]

00:39:19   did i did enjoy it i'm wondering you [TS]

00:39:22   know what you guys think in terms of [TS]

00:39:24   your product on on on gone home [TS]

00:39:26   I was a little surprised by how short it [TS]

00:39:28   was um I mean I guess I got to the end I [TS]

00:39:30   was left wanting more which is not a bad [TS]

00:39:32   thing there's so many other games I play [TS]

00:39:33   where they seemed to drag on but I was a [TS]

00:39:36   little surprised by how short it was but [TS]

00:39:38   i liked it i would recommend it [TS]

00:39:40   I honestly found it kind of boring and I [TS]

00:39:45   hate to say that because i love indie [TS]

00:39:47   games and I really see what they were [TS]

00:39:48   trying to get get out here but the the [TS]

00:39:52   atmosphere just never really worked for [TS]

00:39:53   me that the contrived stuff laying [TS]

00:39:56   around just took me out of that [TS]

00:39:57   atmosphere constantly and I thought that [TS]

00:40:01   the the whole love story plot line was [TS]

00:40:03   very sweet and very well done and that's [TS]

00:40:05   mostly down to really good writing for [TS]

00:40:08   the two girls like the the notes that [TS]

00:40:11   they've written back and forth really [TS]

00:40:12   ring true for me they felt like [TS]

00:40:14   teenagers in a way that fictional [TS]

00:40:15   characters are things you need [TS]

00:40:17   successfully kind of took me back to [TS]

00:40:19   that period where everything seemed like [TS]

00:40:22   it was heartbreak you know and and so I [TS]

00:40:24   thought that all work very well and I [TS]

00:40:26   thought the [TS]

00:40:27   whoever the voice actresses that did Sam [TS]

00:40:29   was terrific [TS]

00:40:31   yes because she had a real nice sound [TS]

00:40:33   and she sounded very heartfelt and and [TS]

00:40:36   really fit the part very well but to me [TS]

00:40:39   I sit down for a game and I want to play [TS]

00:40:42   a game you know and this this was more [TS]

00:40:44   or less we can debate endlessly what [TS]

00:40:47   constitutes a game but i think there is [TS]

00:40:49   a line where you know you've stopped [TS]

00:40:52   playing a game and you're you're [TS]

00:40:53   basically experiencing a Judy Blume [TS]

00:40:55   novel with a really convoluted page [TS]

00:40:57   turning mechanism know and this I think [TS]

00:41:00   was was over that line for me I I you [TS]

00:41:02   know I understand that other people [TS]

00:41:04   probably feel very differently about it [TS]

00:41:05   but didn't really work for me and I i [TS]

00:41:08   really enjoyed it i mean III playing ki [TS]

00:41:11   played in two sessions and so I had that [TS]

00:41:12   first instinct was session on the plane [TS]

00:41:14   where I played for an hour or so and at [TS]

00:41:17   that point was like really creeped out [TS]

00:41:18   and kind of put away because I was like [TS]

00:41:19   all right I need to put this you know [TS]

00:41:21   come back to this when I'm not on a [TS]

00:41:22   plane in the darkness over the over the [TS]

00:41:25   middle of the country and I played it [TS]

00:41:27   like an afternoon and so it was it at [TS]

00:41:29   that point i think it was right around [TS]

00:41:30   the time at which you start getting a [TS]

00:41:32   better idea of what kind of game it was [TS]

00:41:33   so the mood for me while still creepy at [TS]

00:41:38   times and sort of having that eerie [TS]

00:41:39   movie atmosphere that the job was [TS]

00:41:41   talking about a it it's often a little [TS]

00:41:44   bit both probably by being in daylight [TS]

00:41:45   and because i was starting to get a [TS]

00:41:46   clearer picture of what the story was [TS]

00:41:48   about and I think you know Steve's right [TS]

00:41:50   that this is there's a lot of this [TS]

00:41:52   that's more story like in terms of you [TS]

00:41:54   know being told a story but i don't know [TS]

00:41:56   i mean i still thought as a game it was [TS]

00:41:58   fun and interesting it was a yeah i [TS]

00:42:01   don't--there's there's room for a lot of [TS]

00:42:02   different types of games in this for me [TS]

00:42:03   you know well not like many of the other [TS]

00:42:06   games that I play I think it was still [TS]

00:42:08   worthwhile experience and it was an [TS]

00:42:09   interesting story and I enjoyed the way [TS]

00:42:11   that it was presented and clearly as [TS]

00:42:14   someone who didn't go through in like [TS]

00:42:15   unlock everything cream you know maybe I [TS]

00:42:19   didn't get the most out of it that I [TS]

00:42:21   could have but I still thought it was [TS]

00:42:22   pretty good as we're going to find that [TS]

00:42:24   in a moment I thought gone home was much [TS]

00:42:27   more successful than brothers I think [TS]

00:42:29   and it instantly it's I think it's of [TS]

00:42:31   interest to a narrow group of people [TS]

00:42:34   than brothers is and I think gone home [TS]

00:42:37   requires more empathy [TS]

00:42:40   charity and life experience to [TS]

00:42:41   appreciate like a 12 year olds not gonna [TS]

00:42:43   play gone home and you know get into it [TS]

00:42:45   or maybe they would I don't know but it [TS]

00:42:46   seems like not it's not as broad and in [TS]

00:42:49   terms of like what is a game what isn't [TS]

00:42:50   I i was filled that what gaming brings [TS]

00:42:53   to the experience is the idea that you [TS]

00:42:57   are making things happen not that you [TS]

00:43:00   like oh I can change the game in the end [TS]

00:43:02   of the end of my game the house blew up [TS]

00:43:03   or anything like that it's it's the [TS]

00:43:06   illusion of of control and agent this [TS]

00:43:09   year just the sheer fact that you're [TS]

00:43:10   participating you said I was [TS]

00:43:11   sophisticated way of paper showing a [TS]

00:43:13   sufficiently sophisticated technique of [TS]

00:43:15   page-turning brings me at least into the [TS]

00:43:17   story more because i feel like i am i am [TS]

00:43:20   participating I'm like you get the same [TS]

00:43:21   thing when you read a book like you an [TS]

00:43:22   empty empathize with the character lead [TS]

00:43:24   character whatever but the act of [TS]

00:43:26   walking around doing that stuff and [TS]

00:43:27   looking through things yourself as [TS]

00:43:29   little as it may matter to the outcome [TS]

00:43:31   of the game or maybe your become totally [TS]

00:43:33   longer else or whatever I if you don't [TS]

00:43:36   feel that and I didn't feel that much [TS]

00:43:39   during this game it makes the story more [TS]

00:43:41   meaningful to me than if I had simply [TS]

00:43:43   read those journal entries on let that's [TS]

00:43:44   my yardstick you put the text of this [TS]

00:43:46   game into a book and read it versus me [TS]

00:43:48   playing this game i'll pick the game any [TS]

00:43:49   day of the week with the exact same [TS]

00:43:50   words and that I feel like it's what [TS]

00:43:52   gaming brings to this above and beyond a [TS]

00:43:55   story I very much agree with what you're [TS]

00:43:57   saying there and when I thought exactly [TS]

00:43:59   the opposite i thought this could be [TS]

00:44:01   done better in a book with with the same [TS]

00:44:04   thing with the same text now well I mean [TS]

00:44:06   you have to have to structure in such a [TS]

00:44:08   way that it wasn't ridiculous I mean you [TS]

00:44:09   can just read the journal and and be [TS]

00:44:11   satisfied with that but honestly my [TS]

00:44:13   obviously we did in the book you flush [TS]

00:44:15   it out way more and it would be you [TS]

00:44:16   could make a good book out of this but [TS]

00:44:17   just given just given the amount of [TS]

00:44:20   texts in the stories here with maybe a [TS]

00:44:21   little bit of connecting stuff I feel [TS]

00:44:23   like walking through the house finding [TS]

00:44:24   things yourself doing the stuff in that [TS]

00:44:26   atmosphere heighten the experience my [TS]

00:44:28   way above just attacks and now you two [TS]

00:44:30   must fight to the death and I just felt [TS]

00:44:32   like I wasn't doing anything is the [TS]

00:44:34   problem is i was picking up milk cartons [TS]

00:44:36   and turning them over and I was [TS]

00:44:37   basically just killing time until I [TS]

00:44:39   found the next blotted a piece of paper [TS]

00:44:41   that was story relevant and so there [TS]

00:44:44   wasn't enough to suck me in and and [TS]

00:44:46   maybe it's just down to having spent too [TS]

00:44:47   much time playing haunted house games or [TS]

00:44:50   games where I'm exploring house and [TS]

00:44:51   actually manipulating items in [TS]

00:44:53   and really feeling like I'm part of the [TS]

00:44:55   story as opposed to just watching [TS]

00:44:57   through the eyes of the character who's [TS]

00:44:59   doing all this stuff but it just it just [TS]

00:45:01   never grabbed me but but your point your [TS]

00:45:04   point is absolutely right i mean if it [TS]

00:45:05   if if this game had pulled me in that [TS]

00:45:08   way then i would say absolutely this is [TS]

00:45:10   a far superior medium for this story [TS]

00:45:13   than a book but for me it just didn't [TS]

00:45:15   work [TS]

00:45:16   pistols at dawn no actually you leech [TS]

00:45:19   you just have to make a cassette [TS]

00:45:20   its a mix tape mixtape tapes it on okay [TS]

00:45:24   yeah it's gonna be alright girl stuff I [TS]

00:45:27   hope you're cool with that job out there [TS]

00:45:29   they're definitely weaknesses to the [TS]

00:45:30   story in the way that like you don't [TS]

00:45:34   want to see the strings and you do see [TS]

00:45:36   them a little bit too much here and I [TS]

00:45:37   feel for them because it is so [TS]

00:45:38   incredibly that's what am i bringing [TS]

00:45:40   journey and what makes journey so [TS]

00:45:41   amazing at least in the first place for [TS]

00:45:43   me is like you cannot see the strings [TS]

00:45:44   and everything seemed to work out [TS]

00:45:45   perfectly that's almost impossible to do [TS]

00:45:47   and there's a little bit too much like [TS]

00:45:49   if I had to change this game around i [TS]

00:45:50   would say I fewer things that are [TS]

00:45:52   pointless so you wouldn't be spending [TS]

00:45:54   milk cartons for no reason and like it [TS]

00:45:56   its I kind of know what they would have [TS]

00:45:58   to change to make it better but the it [TS]

00:46:00   when it comes down to the details like [TS]

00:46:01   geez this is a really really hard [TS]

00:46:03   problem and so it is extremely difficult [TS]

00:46:05   to make this type of game so that works [TS]

00:46:07   for everybody [TS]

00:46:08   I think they did enough of it here where [TS]

00:46:09   I'm going to give it a thumbs up in it [TS]

00:46:10   and totally endorse the game in it and [TS]

00:46:12   it worked for me but it doesn't reach [TS]

00:46:14   you no guarantees level for me [TS]

00:46:15   not even close but still recommended see [TS]

00:46:18   and journey worked wonderfully for me [TS]

00:46:19   and I think a lot of that was down to [TS]

00:46:21   the fact that there were actually [TS]

00:46:22   problems for you to solve in journey [TS]

00:46:24   they were difficult problems and they [TS]

00:46:25   were very unconventional and I think I [TS]

00:46:30   complained a little bit in the journey [TS]

00:46:32   episode about the fact that there wasn't [TS]

00:46:34   enough difficulty for me really to to [TS]

00:46:36   stretch the game out but it just the [TS]

00:46:40   simple fact that i had to solve some [TS]

00:46:42   sort of problem gave me such a an [TS]

00:46:44   attachment to the character it really [TS]

00:46:46   made me feel like I was guiding this guy [TS]

00:46:48   or you know it going farther i actually [TS]

00:46:50   am this guy is he's exploring this world [TS]

00:46:53   and this there just wasn't anything in [TS]

00:46:54   this game to do that for me but and I [TS]

00:46:56   think you know I think different parts [TS]

00:46:57   of games resonate with different people [TS]

00:46:59   in different ways i mean i think some [TS]

00:47:00   people really want that sense of kind of [TS]

00:47:02   challenge and achievement and overcoming [TS]

00:47:05   an obstacle [TS]

00:47:06   you know a lot of games build off of [TS]

00:47:07   that very heavily this game does not [TS]

00:47:09   almost at all right i mean they're the [TS]

00:47:11   puzzles in this gamer so trivial you [TS]

00:47:13   might as well not called and puzzles but [TS]

00:47:15   it's really strong in the story area [TS]

00:47:16   which is you know other games are not or [TS]

00:47:18   in other games would be more about the [TS]

00:47:20   visuals and you know I think this game [TS]

00:47:21   does pretty well but for visuals but [TS]

00:47:23   it's clearly more about the story I mean [TS]

00:47:25   these characters in gone home feel more [TS]

00:47:28   real to me than any other video game i [TS]

00:47:30   can remember that's one aspect of the [TS]

00:47:33   game but we haven't talked about that is [TS]

00:47:34   definitely true is that if you are for [TS]

00:47:36   example like you know a kid who is gay [TS]

00:47:39   who grew up closet didn't have to come [TS]

00:47:40   out of your parents are like if you have [TS]

00:47:41   actual personal residence with with this [TS]

00:47:44   situation and also it's a it's a story [TS]

00:47:47   that you don't often see in Games which [TS]

00:47:49   I feel like this is like that's a lot of [TS]

00:47:50   the extra attention this game is getting [TS]

00:47:51   is because it's telling a story to [TS]

00:47:54   people who normally don't have the [TS]

00:47:55   stories told because in that space [TS]

00:47:56   marines or detectives you know what i [TS]

00:47:58   mean and that like that goes a long way [TS]

00:48:00   towards you know giving this game a [TS]

00:48:02   boost in that it's a story even if [TS]

00:48:05   you're not even if you can't directly [TS]

00:48:06   emphasize with the things that are [TS]

00:48:07   happening because none of those things [TS]

00:48:08   happened in your family or whatever it's [TS]

00:48:10   maybe a story that you haven't played [TS]

00:48:11   there before I've been the grizzled [TS]

00:48:13   detective I've been the space marine I [TS]

00:48:15   haven't been the daughter coming home [TS]

00:48:16   from Europe you've been a little space [TS]

00:48:18   detective [TS]

00:48:18   yes I've been the gristle space that was [TS]

00:48:20   only once and i've been i've been linked [TS]

00:48:22   many many times i actually have been the [TS]

00:48:24   confused lesbian though [TS]

00:48:25   yes well it was College Steve yeah well [TS]

00:48:28   we did like this but it sounds young [TS]

00:49:28   let's uh let's move on and talk about [TS]

00:49:30   brothers brothers a tale of two sons [TS]

00:49:33   available on xbox and playstation and is [TS]

00:49:38   this on pc to yes it is that's where i [TS]

00:49:40   played it all right i played this on [TS]

00:49:43   xbox actually came here seen did you [TS]

00:49:48   have got like every console for a [TS]

00:49:50   non-gamer i do I first yes I got every [TS]

00:49:53   every last generation console now [TS]

00:49:56   yes I am state-of-the-art from 2008 [TS]

00:49:58   Steve wow yeah i know it's pretty cool [TS]

00:50:01   i'm gonna going to watch the x-files VHS [TS]

00:50:04   is and make some mixtapes then but if [TS]

00:50:06   you're talking you know you talk down [TS]

00:50:08   your gamer credit but you got some men [TS]

00:50:10   have no credit i have the boxes with all [TS]

00:50:12   those games that I don't finish so that [TS]

00:50:14   potential energy versus kinetic legs [TS]

00:50:17   thank you thank you to the energy her [TS]

00:50:20   yeah statements teasingly energy can [TS]

00:50:22   never truly be destroyed by one relay [TS]

00:50:24   the games I just never played violin [TS]

00:50:27   playing games because the podcast that's [TS]

00:50:28   my new that's my new traveling excuse so [TS]

00:50:30   brothers uh from Star values about two [TS]

00:50:33   brothers it's about brothers it's a tale [TS]

00:50:36   of two sons they are the sons of their [TS]

00:50:37   parents the same parents dust brothers [TS]

00:50:40   you're not going to get me my opening [TS]

00:50:42   statement refers to make anyone do you [TS]

00:50:44   have an opening statement about this I [TS]

00:50:45   yeah we need to find her off the full [TS]

00:50:47   display board first John yeah no I don't [TS]

00:50:50   think you need to fire it off but like I [TS]

00:50:51   think this is a good way to frame this [TS]

00:50:52   is all I will frame it then you guys [TS]

00:50:54   will go nuts and i will pick up any [TS]

00:50:55   scraps that you got at the end because [TS]

00:50:57   as I said I thought gone home was more [TS]

00:50:58   successful this and so the creators of [TS]

00:51:00   this game are so very clearly fans of [TS]

00:51:03   one of my favorite games of all time [TS]

00:51:05   eco which I've been trying to get us [TS]

00:51:07   successful and write both my third [TS]

00:51:10   person adventure games with two main [TS]

00:51:11   characters both of them don't require a [TS]

00:51:13   lot of skill to play both we have an [TS]

00:51:14   emphasis on cooperation and both of them [TS]

00:51:16   emphasize the emotional impact / like [TS]

00:51:18   fancy gameplayer puzzles like that and [TS]

00:51:22   the danger of basing being heavily [TS]

00:51:25   inspired by one of my hair games all [TS]

00:51:26   times that i will constantly compare [TS]

00:51:27   your game to one of my favorite games of [TS]

00:51:29   all time [TS]

00:51:29   and in the case of brothers i did that [TS]

00:51:32   and found it lacking and I have a huge [TS]

00:51:34   list of reasons that's the case but [TS]

00:51:36   instead i will let you guys go and [TS]

00:51:37   anything that you don't get i will pick [TS]

00:51:39   up my first note just says eco plus lost [TS]

00:51:43   vikings minus originality minus [TS]

00:51:45   difficulty so I I've got a couple of [TS]

00:51:48   things here first i should say that the [TS]

00:51:50   premise here is that these brothers [TS]

00:51:51   their father is ill mysteriously and [TS]

00:51:54   they have to be set out to go across [TS]

00:51:56   this world find a cure and the clever [TS]

00:52:00   game mechanic that I think is the thing [TS]

00:52:03   that makes this game [TS]

00:52:04   the most notable and why people have [TS]

00:52:06   talked about it is you control both [TS]

00:52:08   brothers the left thumbstick controls [TS]

00:52:11   the big brother and the right thumbstick [TS]

00:52:13   controls the little brother and the left [TS]

00:52:14   trigger is an action for the big brother [TS]

00:52:16   in the left trigger right trigger is the [TS]

00:52:18   action for the little brother I also say [TS]

00:52:20   that my wife compared John compared this [TS]

00:52:23   to eco while we were playing it [TS]

00:52:26   it is very obvious because we got to the [TS]

00:52:28   point where there's the word that where [TS]

00:52:30   they meet the girl and they rescue her [TS]

00:52:31   from from being sacrificed or executed [TS]

00:52:35   or whatever it happens to be and and and [TS]

00:52:38   then for several you know points in the [TS]

00:52:41   story she comes along with the [TS]

00:52:42   characters and at one point my wife [TS]

00:52:44   exclaimed she's smart [TS]

00:52:47   we it's not like that stupid girl in eco [TS]

00:52:49   where you have to hold her hand and drag [TS]

00:52:50   her around terrible just terrible [TS]

00:52:54   I know so that there you go but uh so [TS]

00:52:58   anyway yes so that so I I have thoughts [TS]

00:53:01   about this too but I I'm gonna throw it [TS]

00:53:02   out to the rest of the panel by the way [TS]

00:53:04   we did you let your wife see the rest of [TS]

00:53:06   the game and how that turns out with the [TS]

00:53:08   girl [TS]

00:53:09   oh yeah we like with journey we actually [TS]

00:53:12   played this game kind of handing it off [TS]

00:53:15   back and forth and the kids actually [TS]

00:53:17   watched watched us as we played this [TS]

00:53:19   game so all of it i'm curious because [TS]

00:53:21   that is a little olive it takes it take [TS]

00:53:23   to now the tone a little bit [TS]

00:53:26   it does i play the beginning with my [TS]

00:53:28   kids and then kept playing after they [TS]

00:53:29   went to sleep and I said okay I'm not [TS]

00:53:30   bringing the kids back into the skin on [TS]

00:53:32   my kids are old enough now that it has [TS]

00:53:33   today was my real your seven-year-old [TS]

00:53:36   son enjoyed it [TS]

00:53:37   yeah if they don't find out about [TS]

00:53:39   spiders cities in your house and find [TS]

00:53:41   out of metal ok ok but I I what's that [TS]

00:53:43   sound I hear coming for the distance [TS]

00:53:44   it's all know the spoiler horn again [TS]

00:53:52   alright so we should we should spoil it [TS]

00:53:54   all we like now [TS]

00:53:55   alright so i haven't played ego alright [TS]

00:53:57   so i'll just come out there today then [TS]

00:53:58   everyone playstation alright you're off [TS]

00:54:00   the podcast your help you're a terrorist [TS]

00:54:02   podcast is over and I can lend you one [TS]

00:54:04   I'm totally cool with that and so I [TS]

00:54:07   really really like yeah I'm for my [TS]

00:54:09   situation that I forgot earlier with the [TS]

00:54:11   game i've not played it by I i know of [TS]

00:54:13   it so I but i will say I I experienced [TS]

00:54:16   this game in a in a vacuum not having [TS]

00:54:18   compared it to that game in the game and [TS]

00:54:20   John Cena killing again that is good is [TS]

00:54:22   to remind me the most of his journey of [TS]

00:54:24   attorney was absolutely is very yeah [TS]

00:54:26   there it's not the same game it's very [TS]

00:54:28   much not the same an attorney but there [TS]

00:54:30   are many things in it that are [TS]

00:54:30   reminiscent of journey [TS]

00:54:32   although apparently now every game that [TS]

00:54:33   aspires to art has to have that swelling [TS]

00:54:36   string music that's what that's one of [TS]

00:54:38   the reasons why I thought of a really [TS]

00:54:39   want this to be journey to ferment it [TS]

00:54:41   was the I mean again I play a lot of [TS]

00:54:43   other games that are much more involved [TS]

00:54:45   and so something where the control [TS]

00:54:48   scheme is so simple as to be you know [TS]

00:54:49   basically transparent right like once [TS]

00:54:52   you know move do things right like [TS]

00:54:54   everything else is contained within the [TS]

00:54:55   world of the game which is basically the [TS]

00:54:58   exact same thing for journey right like [TS]

00:54:59   once you know how do we like you know [TS]

00:55:00   seeing you know jumper wouldn't move [TS]

00:55:03   around like that is all you need to know [TS]

00:55:05   about what buttons to press [TS]

00:55:07   everything else is really about what you [TS]

00:55:09   do inside the game world to have an [TS]

00:55:11   effect inside the game world and i [TS]

00:55:13   thought the mechanic was really clever [TS]

00:55:14   like I mean it took some time to get [TS]

00:55:16   used to [TS]

00:55:17   I was constantly like I had to make sure [TS]

00:55:18   that I tried to keep the big brother [TS]

00:55:20   growing on the laughing over the right [TS]

00:55:22   otherwise like ok they're running your [TS]

00:55:24   direction was going on and I got pretty [TS]

00:55:26   like I got to into like the second [TS]

00:55:28   section the game before dying which was [TS]

00:55:31   which was good because i was like maybe [TS]

00:55:32   you can't really die in this game and I [TS]

00:55:34   was like well how do youhow did you died [TS]

00:55:36   and they've got lots of stuff determine [TS]

00:55:38   if you died there they are big on the [TS]

00:55:40   invisible walls in this game and not [TS]

00:55:41   like oh yeah but there are some plates [TS]

00:55:43   and the mind off kind of elevate the [TS]

00:55:45   mind crush by rocks and there's there's [TS]

00:55:47   a battleground [TS]

00:55:48   yeah i'll actually had complaints about [TS]

00:55:50   the control scheme i thought i thought [TS]

00:55:52   it was too unwieldy with the two sticks [TS]

00:55:54   and you know the thing with journey is [TS]

00:55:57   it it it felt completely natural [TS]

00:56:00   almost immediately it [TS]

00:56:01   more it's more complicated injure and [TS]

00:56:03   and this game I constantly felt like I [TS]

00:56:05   was fighting a control scheme i never [TS]

00:56:07   forgot that I was holding a control [TS]

00:56:08   that's the whole point of getting on the [TS]

00:56:10   whole point of the game is you are you [TS]

00:56:12   have to be cooperating with yourself and [TS]

00:56:14   you have to coordinate the action and [TS]

00:56:15   there's the holder in Mexico against [TS]

00:56:17   you've gotta coordinate these two it [TS]

00:56:19   just it for something that aspires to be [TS]

00:56:21   the kind of experience that journey was [TS]

00:56:23   that's that's a big obstacle in the way [TS]

00:56:25   and yet the second one is the insistence [TS]

00:56:26   on using the analog triggers as as [TS]

00:56:30   digital controls that just I mean I'm [TS]

00:56:32   not sure what else you would use [TS]

00:56:33   accepted wonder why students have their [TS]

00:56:35   own problems but yeah if I to use the [TS]

00:56:38   playstation controller i wouldn't have [TS]

00:56:39   this problem but with the xbox this [TS]

00:56:41   triggers they'll kill you every time ya [TS]

00:56:43   know our climbing with yeah you have to [TS]

00:56:45   do a lot of like catch release catch [TS]

00:56:47   release and I could be annoying if you [TS]

00:56:48   have to do against Ryland about me there [TS]

00:56:50   but then again I do a lot of games that [TS]

00:56:51   you like hold us down for the [TS]

00:56:53   seven-year-old son had to take a lot of [TS]

00:56:54   breaks yeah but i like that i mean the [TS]

00:56:59   whole that was what made this game [TS]

00:57:01   interesting to me from a gameplay [TS]

00:57:02   standpoint was the fact that it was you [TS]

00:57:05   know that was the the puzzle the puzzle [TS]

00:57:08   was to do these different actions with [TS]

00:57:11   the different characters and they had [TS]

00:57:13   different interaction and they and [TS]

00:57:15   different capabilities and and it [TS]

00:57:18   manifested in a bunch of different ways [TS]

00:57:19   he's gotta hop up here and then he can [TS]

00:57:21   put down the rope and then the other guy [TS]

00:57:22   can climb up or they some of them have [TS]

00:57:24   to work together some of them may have [TS]

00:57:25   to work in opposition [TS]

00:57:27   there's the one where there's the dog [TS]

00:57:28   that's running around ya gotta you gotta [TS]

00:57:31   one has to distract the dog while the [TS]

00:57:33   other one runs and then the other has to [TS]

00:57:34   do it may have to move back and forth [TS]

00:57:36   and I really like that it wasn't it [TS]

00:57:38   wasn't easy and I like that I could do [TS]

00:57:41   it not I could figure it out but it [TS]

00:57:43   wasn't like I was just on Rails I was [TS]

00:57:45   just walking through to the next thing [TS]

00:57:47   that I had to think about right what the [TS]

00:57:49   right but but it never did did you ever [TS]

00:57:51   have to like think about it think about [TS]

00:57:53   it that's was gonna compare yeah you go [TS]

00:57:54   is because like eco has puzzles that you [TS]

00:57:56   have to think about where is this game I [TS]

00:57:58   always knew immediately what they wanted [TS]

00:58:00   me to do and it was fairly easy to do [TS]

00:58:02   that's what I'm saying there was a low [TS]

00:58:03   skill Barry there's more but more [TS]

00:58:04   coordination is required definitely like [TS]

00:58:06   oh you're not just moving one guy around [TS]

00:58:08   so that's why would say for non-gamers [TS]

00:58:10   is probably high barrier but in terms of [TS]

00:58:11   like boy I'm stuck in this puzzle can't [TS]

00:58:13   figure out what to do that [TS]

00:58:14   is much more likely to happen in the [TS]

00:58:16   game like ego then then this one I felt [TS]

00:58:18   like this in every situation I knew what [TS]

00:58:20   they wanted me to do and executed it [TS]

00:58:21   more or less on the first round I said [TS]

00:58:23   I'd never die didn't think you could die [TS]

00:58:25   oh thats see but there were you know I [TS]

00:58:26   think there were times for me when I was [TS]

00:58:28   like well i tried something that I [TS]

00:58:29   realized like okay that's not the [TS]

00:58:31   approach they want me to take but i [TS]

00:58:32   thought was just like so the very early [TS]

00:58:34   on there's a part where you have the [TS]

00:58:35   drawbridge in the treadmill and you have [TS]

00:58:36   to light so you can you realize oh one [TS]

00:58:38   of the brothers can get the treadmill [TS]

00:58:39   and lower it and the other guy could go [TS]

00:58:41   across and how to get both of them [TS]

00:58:42   across so i tried for a while I start [TS]

00:58:44   piling sheep hit escape before heavy [TS]

00:58:46   enough to keep the comforts down which [TS]

00:58:48   incidentally is hilarious because [TS]

00:58:49   they're now yeah I did that to you [TS]

00:58:51   because it's just because it's fun yeah [TS]

00:58:53   I know I spent some time playing but i [TS]

00:58:55   did that because I thought it was a [TS]

00:58:56   valid solution and finally realize i'm [TS]

00:58:58   going to put the ship and refine my son [TS]

00:59:00   greatly enjoyed dropping them into the [TS]

00:59:01   wall yesterday really from the wonderful [TS]

00:59:03   i love that because then they come [TS]

00:59:04   another one this like lively comes out [TS]

00:59:06   of the little farmhouse is he like your [TS]

00:59:08   shit that comes out of the shed [TS]

00:59:10   yeah they should have they should have a [TS]

00:59:11   a spin-off game just with the Sheep [TS]

00:59:13   Michael yeah I like I do like all the [TS]

00:59:16   animals in this game but I don't know it [TS]

00:59:19   was for me there were things i'm not [TS]

00:59:22   saying required like a super long time [TS]

00:59:24   and they're definitely puzzles and games [TS]

00:59:25   that have our way harder than this but [TS]

00:59:26   it was that nice balance of being [TS]

00:59:28   something that was not so hard you're [TS]

00:59:30   like banging your head against the wall [TS]

00:59:31   trying to figure out what was not so [TS]

00:59:33   easy that you're just like I'm walking [TS]

00:59:35   through it [TS]

00:59:35   I thought I I thought I hit that sweet [TS]

00:59:37   spot really nicely I mean I feel like [TS]

00:59:38   their other games that a lot more [TS]

00:59:39   challenging and even games I like where [TS]

00:59:42   I hid the point of frustration that I [TS]

00:59:44   stopped right and hopefully i go back [TS]

00:59:46   the next day or you know later that week [TS]

00:59:48   there's some games were frustrated [TS]

00:59:49   enough it's like i'm done with that game [TS]

00:59:51   for a long time if not forever [TS]

00:59:53   yeah and this never had that problem [TS]

00:59:54   i'll admit it's pretty you know the [TS]

00:59:56   challenges are pretty simple pretty soft [TS]

00:59:58   but I felt like that they were they were [TS]

00:59:58   but I felt like that they were they were [TS]

01:00:00   that really nice sweet spot where you [TS]

01:00:01   kept moving forward right you felt like [TS]

01:00:02   you could figure this out and keep going [TS]

01:00:04   and I never felt like at this game i'm [TS]

01:00:07   not playing anymore right you know this [TS]

01:00:08   is stupid i can't figure out what I'm [TS]

01:00:10   supposed to do just clever enough for [TS]

01:00:11   like oh yes i got it to hold my interest [TS]

01:00:13   in keeping I don't think there are any [TS]

01:00:15   challenging puzzles in this game of the [TS]

01:00:17   control scheme is a little bit [TS]

01:00:19   challenging but they're challenging [TS]

01:00:20   puzzles and this is not to say that I [TS]

01:00:21   think challenge is essential for a good [TS]

01:00:23   game because journey has like zero [TS]

01:00:24   challenge it's like one of my favorite [TS]

01:00:26   games of all time so you don't need [TS]

01:00:27   challenge to make a google at least he [TS]

01:00:29   has more challenge than this by a large [TS]

01:00:31   though [TS]

01:00:31   well I mean I don't anyway though the [TS]

01:00:33   whole point is I don't think you need [TS]

01:00:34   challenge make a good game but here's [TS]

01:00:36   what you do need you need you need a lot [TS]

01:00:39   so you need something else to overcome [TS]

01:00:41   any kind of gameplay that is as brutally [TS]

01:00:43   Leonard linear as brothers is like you [TS]

01:00:45   need like journey level of awesomeness [TS]

01:00:46   to make you forget that you're being led [TS]

01:00:48   down a single long car door with [TS]

01:00:49   invisible walls also yes as a music [TS]

01:00:51   atmosphere you need like emotions you [TS]

01:00:53   need some intellectual engagement need [TS]

01:00:55   something right and eco is less linear [TS]

01:00:58   then brothers our journey because you [TS]

01:00:59   can kind of wander all over and do all [TS]

01:01:00   this stuff but it really is kind of [TS]

01:01:02   linear a bit but there's more Challenge [TS]

01:01:04   mentally to the puzzles and the [TS]

01:01:06   free-roaming nature like let's fix you [TS]

01:01:07   out into making you think that you're [TS]

01:01:09   not you're not being like that i mean [TS]

01:01:10   i-i don't I mean I played eco I don't I [TS]

01:01:13   mean to me they're different games I [TS]

01:01:14   don't I mean the scope of them is [TS]

01:01:17   completely different ego is a much [TS]

01:01:18   larger cargo but the whole thing makes [TS]

01:01:20   you feel like you're not into Carter [TS]

01:01:21   brothers were just killing me with the [TS]

01:01:23   linearity because it was at one point I [TS]

01:01:24   climbed up a wall for the for the 10,000 [TS]

01:01:27   time and once again that I know how to [TS]

01:01:28   climb also to people's thank you don't [TS]

01:01:30   need the same challenge million times [TS]

01:01:31   and I realized it was like a baby [TS]

01:01:33   penguin rescuing side mission that I had [TS]

01:01:35   missed somehow I got gonna go back down [TS]

01:01:37   the wall and do that and it wouldn't let [TS]

01:01:38   me go back down the wall to do it you [TS]

01:01:39   can still see the side mission that I [TS]

01:01:41   had failed to do like not only with [TS]

01:01:42   linear it was like slamming doors behind [TS]

01:01:44   me as i went down this invisible wall [TS]

01:01:46   Carter and if you're not going to have [TS]

01:01:48   challenging puzzles and you're gonna [TS]

01:01:50   have linear gameplay like you can't you [TS]

01:01:52   need to pick something else there like a [TS]

01:01:54   bit journey has zero challenge it's [TS]

01:01:56   incredibly linear and at no point did I [TS]

01:01:58   ever get that feeling of like I'm [TS]

01:02:00   Brailled in I I think you're mistaken [TS]

01:02:01   journey has challenged to it challenges [TS]

01:02:04   not the big thing it but journey [TS]

01:02:05   certainly challenging their stuff where [TS]

01:02:07   you feel threatened in journey you have [TS]

01:02:08   to overcome obstacles i think all games [TS]

01:02:10   have an element [TS]

01:02:11   Challenge otherwise you'd be completely [TS]

01:02:12   bored yeah I guess you do feel you do [TS]

01:02:14   feel a sense of threat but like [TS]

01:02:15   inherently general use [TS]

01:02:17   you literally can't die though I mean [TS]

01:02:18   now you know he's not the only offset [TS]

01:02:21   back yet not all but that's another [TS]

01:02:22   thing about journey as you you never [TS]

01:02:24   really thought that you couldn't die in [TS]

01:02:26   that game i remembered that the flying a [TS]

01:02:29   dragon creature whatever taking me out [TS]

01:02:31   and thinking oh that finally has decided [TS]

01:02:33   to kill me and that's in fact that's the [TS]

01:02:35   ridiculous thing about games that death [TS]

01:02:37   is overused as the single punishment [TS]

01:02:39   there's lots of ways you can get [TS]

01:02:40   punished you can get things taken away [TS]

01:02:41   and get pushback video is your scholarly [TS]

01:02:43   get you know yet our death is a cop-out [TS]

01:02:46   right i mean that's like you know that [TS]

01:02:48   will because it's the one thing that [TS]

01:02:49   breaks the narrative it doesn't mean [TS]

01:02:50   that you write on the pit but guess what [TS]

01:02:52   i want that here right enter a couple [TS]

01:02:54   games where they do funny things with [TS]

01:02:56   time travel or no the prince of persia [TS]

01:02:57   games are actually noteworthy because [TS]

01:02:59   it's like being narrated you follow the [TS]

01:03:00   pit and the narrator says that's not [TS]

01:03:02   what happened and you jump back but yeah [TS]

01:03:04   but no death is overused as the like [TS]

01:03:06   this is how you fall back and that's I [TS]

01:03:08   mean I think during is a classic example [TS]

01:03:10   you can have challenged without death [TS]

01:03:12   sure you can and that and that happens [TS]

01:03:14   in other games i'm a big fan of you know [TS]

01:03:15   graphic adventure games and things like [TS]

01:03:16   that were there is challenging their [TS]

01:03:18   obstacles but you don't die you're even [TS]

01:03:21   you know something really great games [TS]

01:03:22   for you can't get into an irrevocable [TS]

01:03:23   situation right now that's what I was [TS]

01:03:25   thinking was getting stuck like that you [TS]

01:03:26   think you talking about for we like I [TS]

01:03:28   don't know what to do next in this game [TS]

01:03:29   and I'm frustrated you know like that's [TS]

01:03:31   what I talked about like in terms of [TS]

01:03:32   challenge like where you're where you [TS]

01:03:33   have to put the controller down and say [TS]

01:03:34   I forget it i'm going to come back this [TS]

01:03:36   because you're frustrated because of a [TS]

01:03:37   mechanic or because you have no idea [TS]

01:03:39   what to do and that never happens in [TS]

01:03:41   journey which is a great thing about it [TS]

01:03:42   is you never you never will get stuck [TS]

01:03:44   unless you really don't have the [TS]

01:03:45   coordination just move the guy along and [TS]

01:03:47   it doesn't happen in this game either [TS]

01:03:48   but this game is lacking all the stuff [TS]

01:03:51   that journey has to make it so that [TS]

01:03:52   you're willing to walk down a big long [TS]

01:03:53   corridor with invisible walls and not [TS]

01:03:55   feel like you're so yeah I don't know [TS]

01:03:57   that I agree with that either because i [TS]

01:03:59   don't like the thing that the for me [TS]

01:04:00   made this game was the relationship [TS]

01:04:02   between the brothers [TS]

01:04:03   I mean and again really touching and [TS]

01:04:05   it's not it's not like on homework like [TS]

01:04:07   all right we're going to tell you [TS]

01:04:08   everything about this you know the all [TS]

01:04:10   the details right vector the language [TS]

01:04:11   that they speak is basically impossible [TS]

01:04:13   to understand right you can kind of pick [TS]

01:04:15   up stuff from context but you're never [TS]

01:04:17   gonna understand the full import of what [TS]

01:04:18   I also i mean the only thing I knew [TS]

01:04:20   going into this game was [TS]

01:04:21   have been compared to journey and at [TS]

01:04:22   first I was kind of skeptical as like [TS]

01:04:24   this is not the scale and scope of [TS]

01:04:25   journey i really like journey but i [TS]

01:04:27   think this game had a really great slow [TS]

01:04:28   build i mean i really liked the way you [TS]

01:04:30   saw the relationship between the between [TS]

01:04:32   the brothers you know the stuff about [TS]

01:04:33   their two different parents even as the [TS]

01:04:35   way it expanded from you know your first [TS]

01:04:37   kind of puzzles are like there's a jerk [TS]

01:04:39   with a stick who won't let you get past [TS]

01:04:41   a you know a bridge and you have to go [TS]

01:04:42   around two later you know your kind of [TS]

01:04:45   your running across this field and their [TS]

01:04:46   dogs chasing you to then there are these [TS]

01:04:48   things they're like actually kind of [TS]

01:04:49   foreign and hostile and creepy and weird [TS]

01:04:51   and otherworldly and it's like it does [TS]

01:04:53   actually fire one of the brothers in a [TS]

01:04:54   in a catapult that one yeah you know is [TS]

01:04:56   this actually happening or you know is [TS]

01:04:58   this real or is this the the imagination [TS]

01:05:00   of the younger brother has become the [TS]

01:05:02   way that is commanded to me was was [TS]

01:05:04   amazing i mean when the first our first [TS]

01:05:06   maybe half hours like man people [TS]

01:05:08   comparing this journey there you know I [TS]

01:05:10   don't know I'm not with them but then at [TS]

01:05:11   the end of music swells and suddenly [TS]

01:05:13   it's snowy and I'm like oh yeah okay and [TS]

01:05:16   really are trying to be any now really [TS]

01:05:18   talked about the end yet but you know [TS]

01:05:20   you get to the end and one of the [TS]

01:05:22   brothers dies and it's like well as the [TS]

01:05:24   game to be over now how you know [TS]

01:05:26   basically that last I don't 20-25 [TS]

01:05:28   minutes where you're playing as little [TS]

01:05:30   surviving brother i kept being how much [TS]

01:05:32   longer can this game be because this [TS]

01:05:34   feels weird and wrong and like that [TS]

01:05:35   sounds like somebody's having another [TS]

01:05:37   game that I played before but that's the [TS]

01:05:39   one to one truly moving thing in the [TS]

01:05:41   story for me for me that the the the [TS]

01:05:44   brothers in their relationship was all [TS]

01:05:45   just so generic they didn't do much for [TS]

01:05:47   me [TS]

01:05:48   the older brothers the serious one and a [TS]

01:05:49   little one of those buckets of water on [TS]

01:05:51   sleeping people okay I get that and then [TS]

01:05:54   at the end when the younger brother is [TS]

01:05:57   on his own and the thing that you have [TS]

01:05:58   to do in order to push him forward and [TS]

01:06:01   and and you know for its kind of forget [TS]

01:06:03   his fear of of water and jump up the [TS]

01:06:06   cliff that he doesn't think he's talking [TS]

01:06:08   to get up to is to use the other [TS]

01:06:09   brothers button [TS]

01:06:10   yes that was little I can one very cool [TS]

01:06:13   moving thing I thought is that really [TS]

01:06:16   worked well in the story which only [TS]

01:06:17   works after training you write three [TS]

01:06:20   actually and and3 that was brilliant and [TS]

01:06:22   today even thinking about now I get [TS]

01:06:23   chills i may have played too many games [TS]

01:06:25   to have telegraphed that but I give them [TS]

01:06:27   props hiring i don't know i don't like a [TS]

01:06:29   lot of games you know how you did I ice [TS]

01:06:32   kinda saw that come every like maybe I [TS]

01:06:34   sound like I'm [TS]

01:06:34   already here and I'm not saying I didn't [TS]

01:06:36   like this game because like that's I [TS]

01:06:37   don't want people to know I didn't like [TS]

01:06:38   that like you should totally buy this [TS]

01:06:39   and play this game like it's a great [TS]

01:06:41   game to my players just the only reason [TS]

01:06:43   I have all these huge list of negatives [TS]

01:06:44   that we really good for you it's because [TS]

01:06:46   that because i'm comparing at the eco [TS]

01:06:48   and you should also kinda yeah you [TS]

01:06:50   should also play journey you should also [TS]

01:06:51   play you know shadows of the Colossus [TS]

01:06:53   these are all games you should play but [TS]

01:06:54   brothers is a great game [TS]

01:06:55   I mean you mentioned eco and getting to [TS]

01:06:58   that moment where you where you get in [TS]

01:07:00   some games we get frustrated and I gotta [TS]

01:07:02   come back later i gotta put it down one [TS]

01:07:04   of the things that I appreciate about [TS]

01:07:04   this game and that is is that I never [TS]

01:07:08   got to that point I had to sometimes sit [TS]

01:07:10   there and think okay where do i want to [TS]

01:07:12   go here but it didn't take too long and [TS]

01:07:14   I'd I got to be honest I don't like it [TS]

01:07:17   if a game makes me so frustrated that i [TS]

01:07:20   have to turn it off and come back [TS]

01:07:21   another day a bunch of times so now I [TS]

01:07:23   nobody likes it nobody likes and it's a [TS]

01:07:25   balance of like when does that happen to [TS]

01:07:26   you you know I mean like it if some game [TS]

01:07:29   some people are that frustrated by [TS]

01:07:31   journey and that games are a game is no [TS]

01:07:33   good for them so everything has to be [TS]

01:07:34   targeted a certain level of [TS]

01:07:35   understanding it from from my experience [TS]

01:07:37   this game had no challenge that's not [TS]

01:07:39   and I said it's not a bad thing journey [TS]

01:07:40   had zero challenge for me as well in [TS]

01:07:42   terms of like not understanding what to [TS]

01:07:43   do I always understood what to do and I [TS]

01:07:45   could execute it reasonably well and [TS]

01:07:46   that's fine you can still have a great [TS]

01:07:48   game like that but you need other things [TS]

01:07:50   to offset it at least for me well [TS]

01:07:51   there's different elements of challenge [TS]

01:07:52   to right there's the the mental [TS]

01:07:54   challenge of trying to figure out what's [TS]

01:07:55   the how do I solve this puzzle or where [TS]

01:07:57   I go next what do I do and there's games [TS]

01:07:59   that have like I got frustrated with [TS]

01:08:00   game earlier this week that was playing [TS]

01:08:01   because it was too much of a like there [TS]

01:08:03   was a reaction challenge where it's like [TS]

01:08:04   all right I'm just not fast enough and [TS]

01:08:06   we're aiming well enough to to defeat [TS]

01:08:09   this boss it's like and that I just got [TS]

01:08:10   so frustrated quicktime event [TS]

01:08:12   yeah like oh my god but you had 26 times [TS]

01:08:14   and it keeps resetting me back and I [TS]

01:08:15   have to go through this part that I have [TS]

01:08:17   gotten good at but I got stuck at the [TS]

01:08:18   second part it's just like that to me is [TS]

01:08:20   just so annoying that i'm going to put [TS]

01:08:22   that game down but like there are a [TS]

01:08:24   couple things with brothers work out [TS]

01:08:25   like I mean that i did spend a long time [TS]

01:08:27   on the one puzzle the first time that [TS]

01:08:29   you you tied a rope to each other and [TS]

01:08:31   you do the swinging puzzle like that [TS]

01:08:33   took me a little bit of time like to [TS]

01:08:35   just figure out like all right I got up [TS]

01:08:36   here with the Rope okay how do I get out [TS]

01:08:37   there and once I did figure out like [TS]

01:08:39   okay all right you know i I've mastered [TS]

01:08:40   that but like it is interesting how you [TS]

01:08:43   know there are moments that are [TS]

01:08:44   challenging without necessarily being [TS]

01:08:46   like it's not sure really challenged in [TS]

01:08:47   there [TS]

01:08:48   even their kind of challenges you can [TS]

01:08:49   kind of read her kind of there on the [TS]

01:08:51   side that you can do if you want I mean [TS]

01:08:53   for me I you know I was playing on the [TS]

01:08:55   xbox and achievements the pop-up when [TS]

01:08:57   you do things and brothers was [TS]

01:08:58   interesting in that all the achievements [TS]

01:09:00   were for things that were kind of off [TS]

01:09:01   the beaten path and like I found the [TS]

01:09:03   first one of those and then it's like [TS]

01:09:05   you know a you know I like getting [TS]

01:09:07   achievements because I got no challenge [TS]

01:09:09   to me i want i got i got nine out of 12 [TS]

01:09:12   the first time through and I went Wow [TS]

01:09:14   I have achievements turned off when i'm [TS]

01:09:16   in game because of all that concerned [TS]

01:09:18   but I think I like that like I mean and [TS]

01:09:20   mainly because i liked in this game you [TS]

01:09:22   know you didn't need to get any of them [TS]

01:09:24   but they were like letting you know that [TS]

01:09:26   there were these little things off the [TS]

01:09:27   path that you could find you can explore [TS]

01:09:29   so as i was playing brothers it was like [TS]

01:09:30   I was always looking for what's all the [TS]

01:09:32   little side quest i want it i want to [TS]

01:09:34   experience all the parts of the game [TS]

01:09:35   that they designed right and i missed [TS]

01:09:37   three out of 12 on the first playthrough [TS]

01:09:39   and i went back and found this because [TS]

01:09:40   it's like I want to see all the little [TS]

01:09:42   side passages of this game because they [TS]

01:09:44   were all extremely cute like the funny [TS]

01:09:46   little interest or not no or not it is [TS]

01:09:48   well yeah it turns out there's also like [TS]

01:09:50   you know there's this how you feel about [TS]

01:09:51   hands and said you'd so Dan mentioned [TS]

01:09:54   gameplay mechanics and I you know I it [TS]

01:09:57   wasn't hard to do [TS]

01:10:00   there's a mechanic where the two [TS]

01:10:01   brothers have to grasp this this thing [TS]

01:10:04   and like they need to move it forward [TS]

01:10:05   and and then and then move it left and [TS]

01:10:08   there are a couple of able to drag a [TS]

01:10:09   piece of wood right there are a bunch of [TS]

01:10:12   things like that that i enjoyed just the [TS]

01:10:15   fact that oh I've gotta you know i'm [TS]

01:10:17   going to move them independently or I've [TS]

01:10:18   got a pivot one forward and one back it [TS]

01:10:20   was not particularly complicated but I [TS]

01:10:22   there was it kind of a joy in 10 this is [TS]

01:10:26   different i haven't done something like [TS]

01:10:27   this and that was weirdly satisfying [TS]

01:10:28   also that you had figured it out right [TS]

01:10:30   like the beginning you first have to [TS]

01:10:32   pick up the wheelbarrow with your dad in [TS]

01:10:33   it's like all right go away i can push [TS]

01:10:35   with both the guys alright i'm getting [TS]

01:10:37   this you know and then the part where [TS]

01:10:39   it's like there's you have to navigate [TS]

01:10:40   like the pipe through like a little bit [TS]

01:10:41   made to like jam one of the graves and I [TS]

01:10:44   was like oh I can do this very smoothly [TS]

01:10:45   now like you know have been practiced [TS]

01:10:47   this for a while like there is a sense [TS]

01:10:48   of achievement there and it is well [TS]

01:10:50   there's no stupid tutorial mode right [TS]

01:10:51   it's like going to start senior year you [TS]

01:10:53   know your you have to figure out press [TS]

01:10:55   this button press this button [TS]

01:10:56   alright that's what you need to know [TS]

01:10:57   John has has played games for probably [TS]

01:11:00   several hundred [TS]

01:11:01   red times longer than I have in total [TS]

01:11:03   game time if not thousand but when i get [TS]

01:11:07   at the end of the game when the young [TS]

01:11:09   brother is at the water that experience [TS]

01:11:13   was really good because and so my wife [TS]

01:11:17   is watching this and and she's already [TS]

01:11:20   pretty outraged at the fact that the big [TS]

01:11:22   brother had died because she's like what [TS]

01:11:24   the hell what the hell was that this is [TS]

01:11:26   actually I what about the slow sequence [TS]

01:11:27   where you had to bury him how God is not [TS]

01:11:30   a man not a man yeah she's like what [TS]

01:11:33   what is this game [TS]

01:11:34   it seemed a little curl press x to dig [TS]

01:11:36   it to dig a shallow grave that happens [TS]

01:11:38   to me because I ice set the game aside [TS]

01:11:41   for a while and i came back to it and [TS]

01:11:42   and bren came in and I let me show you [TS]

01:11:45   this game I've been playing and I came [TS]

01:11:47   right back into the part with where she [TS]

01:11:48   turns into a specter it was like all [TS]

01:11:50   right I totally ruin this game for your [TS]

01:11:52   sorry and then she's watching me as I'm [TS]

01:11:54   like Derek my brother like you [TS]

01:11:56   I'm so sorry I'm proud of you on the [TS]

01:11:59   plus side they don't make you dig the [TS]

01:12:00   hole they have continued my drag the [TS]

01:12:02   body in and cover it up [TS]

01:12:04   they just make you dump the dirt on your [TS]

01:12:05   brother's lifeless course sobbing the [TS]

01:12:07   whole wage used to get off joe pesci I'm [TS]

01:12:10   fine i think the whole with this first [TS]

01:12:12   hole I dug yeah so so but some say that [TS]

01:12:15   the water i'm back that the Griffin foul [TS]

01:12:18   creature has brought me back to home and [TS]

01:12:20   i'm i'm at the water and I i I'm [TS]

01:12:23   thinking okay how what's what's the [TS]

01:12:25   solution here i run i trigger i run i go [TS]

01:12:27   over here too i climb and nothing is [TS]

01:12:29   working and so you know that's 30 [TS]

01:12:32   seconds or not and then I i'm looking at [TS]

01:12:34   it and then I think oh yeah right i need [TS]

01:12:38   to i I need to use the brothers controls [TS]

01:12:41   like I would have done before and you [TS]

01:12:43   press the trigger and you hear the [TS]

01:12:45   brother and the boy ventures often too [TS]

01:12:47   even though he's afraid of the water and [TS]

01:12:49   he can't swim to get across and that [TS]

01:12:52   moment for me was really affecting even [TS]

01:12:55   though I I to roll my eyes at the [TS]

01:12:57   brother dying and being well this is [TS]

01:12:58   very much manipulative but but that [TS]

01:13:01   payoff I felt like was really powerful [TS]

01:13:03   now my wife is sitting there watching [TS]

01:13:05   and she just sees me start swimming and [TS]

01:13:07   she gets to the end she's like well that [TS]

01:13:09   was really lame and I said no no I do [TS]

01:13:11   use the brothers consider another [TS]

01:13:12   difference the difference between you [TS]

01:13:14   having played the game [TS]

01:13:15   and her watching the game is true thing [TS]

01:13:17   about games because you were the one [TS]

01:13:18   doing it not just after she had seen the [TS]

01:13:20   earlier part of the games it's different [TS]

01:13:21   when you are doing it and the thing you [TS]

01:13:23   just have to earlier about like feeling [TS]

01:13:25   good about having figured out of [TS]

01:13:26   maneuver that's something that I i also [TS]

01:13:28   mentioned in the journey podcast where [TS]

01:13:29   you don't do much in journey just kind [TS]

01:13:32   of like float around and fly and stuff [TS]

01:13:33   but there's enough there's enough a [TS]

01:13:35   variation in there that you feel like [TS]

01:13:37   you by the end of the game you are [TS]

01:13:39   pulling off moves with finesse and [TS]

01:13:40   that's why talk about the final level [TS]

01:13:41   and journey where you get to show [TS]

01:13:43   Superman now I'm really good at this [TS]

01:13:45   whole scar flying business and watch me [TS]

01:13:47   show my stuff and that's your and that's [TS]

01:13:48   why you you get the little park of like [TS]

01:13:50   i have now learned how to navigate the [TS]

01:13:53   wheelbarrow with two people and I can go [TS]

01:13:54   up the cliff or whatever that the [TS]

01:13:56   biggest fault i think for in brothers is [TS]

01:13:58   that maybe they have you can do some of [TS]

01:13:59   the same things too many times but maybe [TS]

01:14:01   that's just because that's how many [TS]

01:14:02   times more people need more repetition [TS]

01:14:05   to master it whereas if you master the [TS]

01:14:06   first time then the 17-time you're [TS]

01:14:08   climbing up the walls like whatever but [TS]

01:14:10   that you know that's that it that's what [TS]

01:14:13   games are going for and I'm glad that [TS]

01:14:14   you got an attitude even if I didn't in [TS]

01:14:16   this particular game [TS]

01:14:17   well i gotta to and I I'd I audibly was [TS]

01:14:19   like you know when I figured it out i'm [TS]

01:14:20   sitting there and I just you know [TS]

01:14:22   oh my god like you know I had that [TS]

01:14:23   moment of I know what are you doing here [TS]

01:14:25   I know what I need to do and I was like [TS]

01:14:27   you know that to me that payoff is worth [TS]

01:14:29   it I know I i have that at the end of [TS]

01:14:30   the game i was talking about like that [TS]

01:14:31   the him saying he was satisfied like oh [TS]

01:14:33   now I know how to swing on the ropes and [TS]

01:14:35   like get along like that now the ending [TS]

01:14:37   part it's definitely working i regard [TS]

01:14:39   but I I do have my long litany of [TS]

01:14:40   complaints and you guys you guys who [TS]

01:14:42   chokes what if i get if i can quickly go [TS]

01:14:44   through them and and uh yes please [TS]

01:14:48   please move rapidly through the long [TS]

01:14:50   with me I'll just be here nodding and [TS]

01:14:52   and then at the end of what will try to [TS]

01:14:54   say how good the game is to try to I'm [TS]

01:14:55   gonna go get a drink go ahead job [TS]

01:14:57   alright so world design I brothers and [TS]

01:15:02   brothers this item [TS]

01:15:03   yes brother yes brothers straight that's [TS]

01:15:05   right herself medical and heads runs [TS]

01:15:07   like straight-up medieval fantasy and [TS]

01:15:09   the only possible to us is like a little [TS]

01:15:11   bit of over saturated color and slightly [TS]

01:15:12   cartoonish character proportions and eco [TS]

01:15:14   like a and everything is compared with [TS]

01:15:16   ego is like as the muted color palette [TS]

01:15:18   thing which is totally also a trope that [TS]

01:15:20   goes on there but i have to give the [TS]

01:15:23   nautique in terms of being more [TS]

01:15:24   distinctive like this look a little bit [TS]

01:15:25   generic to me a lot of it has to do with [TS]

01:15:27   the fact that uses unreal engine 3 which [TS]

01:15:28   if you're a gamer you've seen a million [TS]

01:15:30   times before like I you know I know what [TS]

01:15:33   unreal engine games look like this looks [TS]

01:15:34   like an unreal engine game which is fine [TS]

01:15:36   and egos engine was novel an interesting [TS]

01:15:38   night wasn't the unreal engine though it [TS]

01:15:39   was the setting the setting was [TS]

01:15:41   unbelievably generic yeah actually might [TS]

01:15:43   be my seven-year-old son recognized all [TS]

01:15:45   of the various tropes and and knew what [TS]

01:15:47   to do with them without having to be [TS]

01:15:48   told ya it didn't seem like it had like [TS]

01:15:50   a big style message [TS]

01:15:52   did he call the that the pretty girl [TS]

01:15:55   that they saved from their horrible [TS]

01:15:56   execution turned out to be a murderous [TS]

01:15:58   spider lady now he didn't get to that [TS]

01:15:59   part because his fingers fell off from [TS]

01:16:01   the triggers that was actually for [TS]

01:16:02   shadow which i thought was clever [TS]

01:16:03   yeah it was it was very well fortunately [TS]

01:16:05   the wall where the sacrificing their [TS]

01:16:07   fighting off giant spiders and it's [TS]

01:16:08   super creepy and the fact that she leaps [TS]

01:16:10   like 800 yards the first time hearing [TS]

01:16:12   like mean I wasn't marmol yeah that the [TS]

01:16:16   language barrier thing again comparing [TS]

01:16:18   with eco which also has characters that [TS]

01:16:19   don't speak the language that you're [TS]

01:16:20   speaking right and both have like a [TS]

01:16:22   limited set of phrases that the players [TS]

01:16:24   repeat you know the so similar in all [TS]

01:16:26   these regards and in this particular [TS]

01:16:28   thing I i found that you know in in [TS]

01:16:32   brothers understanding the intent of the [TS]

01:16:34   spoken words was more important to the [TS]

01:16:36   gameplay and it was also more difficult [TS]

01:16:38   for me to understand what they were [TS]

01:16:39   saying like an eco you press the key to [TS]

01:16:42   call someone and make some noise and the [TS]

01:16:43   person comes you like that must be the [TS]

01:16:44   calling noise but and brothers they have [TS]

01:16:46   these long run subtitled dialogue [TS]

01:16:48   sequences that it's like I'm I get the [TS]

01:16:50   gist of what you're saying but if you're [TS]

01:16:52   going to be talking that long with no [TS]

01:16:53   sometimes I want to actually know what [TS]

01:16:54   you're saying I felt like I was being [TS]

01:16:55   left out of the experience of my own [TS]

01:16:57   name [TS]

01:16:57   well it's so meaningless was the [TS]

01:16:58   conversation clearly that the music [TS]

01:17:00   would swell at those points and drown [TS]

01:17:02   out what the guy was saying at least on [TS]

01:17:04   the pc version it was just like it was [TS]

01:17:06   still too much talking 44 not really [TS]

01:17:08   understanding what they're doing and a [TS]

01:17:10   good example for me is like the very [TS]

01:17:11   beginning of the game what is the goal [TS]

01:17:13   of the game you know a journey like the [TS]

01:17:15   throne mountain your face in eco is like [TS]

01:17:17   old uh you know try to escape and [TS]

01:17:19   brothers I kind of got the idea was like [TS]

01:17:21   I do something to help save this guy who [TS]

01:17:23   is your dad I assume right but it's like [TS]

01:17:25   what am i what am I getting my looking [TS]

01:17:27   for medicine i'm looking for magic am I [TS]

01:17:29   going to find a person and bring your [TS]

01:17:30   diagonal entry it's under control [TS]

01:17:32   read the drive you all right now but it [TS]

01:17:35   like it was it like what is that the [TS]

01:17:36   world treating you [TS]

01:17:38   your brother's the only ones in the [TS]

01:17:39   world that don't know exactly where that [TS]

01:17:41   tree is yeah there's a scroll which way [TS]

01:17:44   to the other side of the world [TS]

01:17:45   oh that's right over there there and I [TS]

01:17:46   know like these are because they want [TS]

01:17:48   you to part of his they want you to be [TS]

01:17:50   to figure out from context which is kind [TS]

01:17:52   of fun 4head is a language I don't know [TS]

01:17:53   but I'm going to fear from context [TS]

01:17:54   what's going on and that's fine it just [TS]

01:17:56   felt like they did a little bit too much [TS]

01:17:58   of leaving me out of the game that i was [TS]

01:17:59   playing just a little bit too much just [TS]

01:18:01   make it make it up use your imagination [TS]

01:18:03   just maybe maybe that power was too [TS]

01:18:04   challenging for me I think whatever we [TS]

01:18:06   cover the gameplay thing with the baby [TS]

01:18:07   penguin that does uh you know i mean it [TS]

01:18:09   wasn't a challenge was essential the [TS]

01:18:11   game but like a baby penguin linearity [TS]

01:18:13   bothered me out of the two player [TS]

01:18:14   experience obviously that's what this [TS]

01:18:16   game is all about you know it's a [TS]

01:18:18   different 2 player take on that you know [TS]

01:18:19   then then journey or eco your journey [TS]

01:18:22   the second player is another person [TS]

01:18:23   which totally changes the equation makes [TS]

01:18:25   it very and you don't need the second [TS]

01:18:26   player but I think with the second place [TS]

01:18:27   that's totally different and another [TS]

01:18:29   human is way more interesting than AI [TS]

01:18:31   and way more engaging you know that [TS]

01:18:33   you're playing with an eco the other [TS]

01:18:34   players AI which is the worst case [TS]

01:18:37   that's like one long terrible escort [TS]

01:18:38   mission and if you played lots of games [TS]

01:18:40   you like I'll cut them i got it i'm [TS]

01:18:42   gonna try to get this other thing is [TS]

01:18:44   just about that as i recall [TS]

01:18:46   yes but in the best case you become [TS]

01:18:48   engaged that you are like protecting [TS]

01:18:51   your little computer friend in the game [TS]

01:18:53   and the computer friend in the game as a [TS]

01:18:54   little bit more pliable than human print [TS]

01:18:56   I think with with the two player [TS]

01:18:59   experience the I mean I worked great for [TS]

01:19:02   the gameplay but then the problem is [TS]

01:19:04   like when you when you have a thing [TS]

01:19:05   where you kill him and you feel like I'm [TS]

01:19:06   being manipulated he gets killed off or [TS]

01:19:08   whatever i do other things without 1i he [TS]

01:19:12   dies and I'm like okay so is there [TS]

01:19:15   something I could do to get the good [TS]

01:19:16   ending where he doesn't die but that's [TS]

01:19:17   my immediate thought right you don't [TS]

01:19:18   have you after that happens I call and [TS]

01:19:21   you shouldn't be really having that [TS]

01:19:22   thought but like that that's what I'm [TS]

01:19:24   thinking and the second one is I almost [TS]

01:19:28   forgot the variable seen the pork barrel [TS]

01:19:30   seen that redhead on the interactive [TS]

01:19:32   burial seem like that is actually been [TS]

01:19:33   done before as well which is fine i and [TS]

01:19:36   i thought the the winter is a slight [TS]

01:19:38   spoiler for the walking dead sorry but [TS]

01:19:40   he you know that's the same type of [TS]

01:19:42   interactive barriers in the walking that [TS]

01:19:43   line everybody [TS]

01:19:44   londa good and I think it's because that [TS]

01:19:47   I mean maybe it's harder for your degree [TS]

01:19:51   for a player that you were controlling [TS]

01:19:52   or what am i doing my grieving for my [TS]

01:19:54   left thumb like it's not quite the same [TS]

01:19:56   as grieving for like grieving for [TS]

01:19:58   another player character in the game or [TS]

01:20:00   even another human player a mean it [TS]

01:20:02   works because you're breathing for your [TS]

01:20:03   brother but like at that point it's like [TS]

01:20:04   okay well now the controls got a lot [TS]

01:20:06   easier and like I mean is just a little [TS]

01:20:08   thing to do but he had hard to control [TS]

01:20:11   these my brother but my left hand has [TS]

01:20:12   nothing to do now I could I could I have [TS]

01:20:15   concluded for this podcast John does not [TS]

01:20:17   have a brother nor has he ever met [TS]

01:20:18   anyone with the Bible you how I do have [TS]

01:20:20   a brother but like the best lighting is [TS]

01:20:22   that guy is doomed [TS]

01:20:24   I thought I thought I don't control them [TS]

01:20:26   with my other thumb but I thought more [TS]

01:20:27   than what i'm going to hope not [TS]

01:20:29   how is your brother at pulling the legs [TS]

01:20:32   off of giant spiders be good at that [TS]

01:20:34   yeah I thought way more attached to the [TS]

01:20:37   human beings and I play journey with and [TS]

01:20:40   the AI player that I protected [TS]

01:20:42   throughout eco than I did with his other [TS]

01:20:43   player that I was controlling because I [TS]

01:20:45   felt like I'm still alive like in just [TS]

01:20:47   half of me is not innovating that worked [TS]

01:20:49   in the later scenes where the character [TS]

01:20:50   in the game was upset by that and like [TS]

01:20:52   getting across the water and you know [TS]

01:20:53   the dead mother and everything it kind [TS]

01:20:55   of worked out but not i mean maybe it [TS]

01:20:58   was just the way they paced the burial [TS]

01:20:59   seen or whatever I just it it was [TS]

01:21:01   missing something for me and I think [TS]

01:21:03   what it was missing is because like the [TS]

01:21:04   things that were good about it that you [TS]

01:21:06   got to control players for the whole [TS]

01:21:07   game worked against it when they killed [TS]

01:21:09   one of them off because i felt like i [TS]

01:21:10   was still like half alive you know I [TS]

01:21:12   mean I mean I call that kind successful [TS]

01:21:13   in some ways I mean like the you know I [TS]

01:21:16   don't you mention think about the good [TS]

01:21:17   ending and i that made me think of a [TS]

01:21:19   mass effect just because that's another [TS]

01:21:21   case where there are characters that can [TS]

01:21:23   die permanently if you do the wrong [TS]

01:21:25   thing and for me it was always i only [TS]

01:21:27   played through those games once but I [TS]

01:21:29   know like Jason tosses occasionally on [TS]

01:21:31   the podcast is played through more times [TS]

01:21:33   than I care to think about and he'll [TS]

01:21:35   talk about like all the different [TS]

01:21:35   endings I'm like but in my world [TS]

01:21:37   this guy is dead like this character [TS]

01:21:39   that would even occur to me to go back [TS]

01:21:41   and like oh I should go back and replay [TS]

01:21:43   it so that he remains alive no he's dead [TS]

01:21:45   and that would be disrespecting his [TS]

01:21:46   memory r.i.p left thumb [TS]

01:21:48   yeah the ending at the ending of this [TS]

01:21:49   one you know to completely spot you end [TS]

01:21:51   up in a situation where the brothers [TS]

01:21:53   dead [TS]

01:21:54   the dad is alive and the mother died [TS]

01:21:55   previously again [TS]

01:21:56   and it's like is this a fair trade like [TS]

01:21:58   if you had not given the father would [TS]

01:22:00   have died but you're not your brother [TS]

01:22:01   still alive right now because this is a [TS]

01:22:04   factory condition [TS]

01:22:05   it just seems like the funding also just [TS]

01:22:07   to just to wrap things up nicely before [TS]

01:22:09   the end credits the final scene is them [TS]

01:22:11   now there are two gravestones out of the [TS]

01:22:12   tree behind the house and the dad is [TS]

01:22:14   sobbing uncontrollably later in the end [TS]

01:22:17   always just like I wanted it hold it [TS]

01:22:19   hold it in the distance you see the [TS]

01:22:21   groupon thing flying by [TS]

01:22:23   he's on his way back to get the older [TS]

01:22:24   brother know and I hate that [TS]

01:22:26   by the way I hate the fact that that's [TS]

01:22:28   happened he's just going back to the [TS]

01:22:30   tree to have some more cool leaves and [TS]

01:22:32   spiderleg well he knows where there's an [TS]

01:22:34   easy meal that's why he's headed back [TS]

01:22:36   there i think i think the end of it for [TS]

01:22:37   me i was turned around he was elected [TS]

01:22:38   and for the rest of his life his father [TS]

01:22:39   can never meet his eyes again and yeah [TS]

01:22:41   like it kind of comes to that and I'm [TS]

01:22:43   like wow this is way darker than I [TS]

01:22:44   thought it was gonna be added by the end [TS]

01:22:46   of this game when I was thinking to [TS]

01:22:47   myself as well just another day in the [TS]

01:22:49   grim blood so funny giant that offering [TS]

01:22:51   yourself in a dreamworld the brothers [TS]

01:22:53   I mean it's just like this place is that [TS]

01:22:55   our man i do not want to live here [TS]

01:22:57   you just need a music place that'll put [TS]

01:22:58   you right out of it but just wait till [TS]

01:23:01   the sequel brother at a loved one son [TS]

01:23:04   and one very sad father now the fact the [TS]

01:23:07   fact that the Griffin is flying back to [TS]

01:23:09   get the older brother kinda ticked me [TS]

01:23:10   off because I what I saw as as the [TS]

01:23:13   obvious kind of a dark here is at the [TS]

01:23:16   beginning the little brother is he's [TS]

01:23:18   consumed with guilt for the death of his [TS]

01:23:20   the drowning death of his mother and you [TS]

01:23:23   know is spending his life grieving and [TS]

01:23:25   what I was expecting to see at the end [TS]

01:23:27   was as the father kind of falls apart [TS]

01:23:29   the the younger brother having been [TS]

01:23:31   strengthened by his experience with his [TS]

01:23:32   older brother than you know kind of [TS]

01:23:34   pulls his father out of it and they [TS]

01:23:35   realize that you know there are things [TS]

01:23:37   worth living for and they kind of move [TS]

01:23:38   on with life and that that would have [TS]

01:23:40   made some sense a little of the the [TS]

01:23:42   older brother's death and i'd i would [TS]

01:23:44   appreciate that ending a lot more than [TS]

01:23:46   then the two possible endings we have [TS]

01:23:49   here which is one everybody's dead and [TS]

01:23:51   everybody sad half of them are dead and [TS]

01:23:53   half of them yes I or something there's [TS]

01:23:57   a happy ending that's about to happen [TS]

01:23:58   with the groupon flying back and [TS]

01:23:59   retrieving the brother who was buried in [TS]

01:24:01   the dirt outside the tree of life and [TS]

01:24:03   therefore is resurrected although [TS]

01:24:04   probably slightly were made it comes [TS]

01:24:06   back as a zombie in the next game you [TS]

01:24:08   have to kill [TS]

01:24:08   admit that cemetery brothers a tale of [TS]

01:24:11   one son and one zombie but with three [TS]

01:24:15   then get back together the mother [TS]

01:24:16   suddenly rises from the sea and they [TS]

01:24:17   have to fight her off [TS]

01:24:19   yeah there was a moment when when you're [TS]

01:24:21   in the ice the ice fields and the [TS]

01:24:22   icebergs and all of that and again that [TS]

01:24:24   was the way they have to row the boat is [TS]

01:24:26   interesting is another interesting game [TS]

01:24:27   mechanic where where there's mountains [TS]

01:24:29   off in the distance and I can't wait to [TS]

01:24:30   see if one of them had that beam of [TS]

01:24:32   light coming out of it like journey it's [TS]

01:24:34   just over there but I'll other like that [TS]

01:24:36   i wanted to mention is i like how the [TS]

01:24:38   like the trolls are used in this i found [TS]

01:24:40   out that sort of tickled me that there's [TS]

01:24:41   there's a patrol that you meet who is [TS]

01:24:43   like totally terrifying except it turns [TS]

01:24:45   out that he's really friendly and [TS]

01:24:46   helpful and helps you get where you need [TS]

01:24:48   to go [TS]

01:24:48   I really like that then later there's a [TS]

01:24:50   level where you have to release a troll [TS]

01:24:52   from a cage by stealing a key from [TS]

01:24:54   another troll at and at that point then [TS]

01:24:57   you have to lock the the the troll [TS]

01:24:59   captor in the cage and then you see that [TS]

01:25:02   the troll that you've released is [TS]

01:25:04   reunited with her you know beloved other [TS]

01:25:06   troll and there's like this shrimp [TS]

01:25:08   portion of the game yeah I didn't see [TS]

01:25:10   that coming because when you first see [TS]

01:25:11   the other girl here that zombies really [TS]

01:25:13   bad what he said about yes I thought it [TS]

01:25:15   would be good for kids like two people [TS]

01:25:16   are hanging from trees and stuff maybe [TS]

01:25:19   not so good for can maybe the end it [TS]

01:25:21   gets a little later look about like it [TS]

01:25:24   like the top totally it didn't [TS]

01:25:26   it's a little bit too much easier pixie [TS]

01:25:29   and it's more like a Grimm fairy tale [TS]

01:25:31   yes actual script yet it's very totally [TS]

01:25:33   at I think tied to the grimm fairy tales [TS]

01:25:35   those were all nasty is how people are [TS]

01:25:38   always dying left and right and that was [TS]

01:25:40   considered a happy ending right i mean [TS]

01:25:41   is the part for me when I got to the [TS]

01:25:43   we're getting a giant's for me and at [TS]

01:25:46   first I get anyone else having a giant [TS]

01:25:47   ice [TS]

01:25:48   wait a second i think it's when the [TS]

01:25:49   first time isn't in the tower you go to [TS]

01:25:52   the tower first well yeah in the towers [TS]

01:25:54   the first time write like that my first [TS]

01:25:55   thought was wait for it does it turn out [TS]

01:25:57   that we're really small when everything [TS]

01:26:00   related a blue twilight zone and then I [TS]

01:26:02   had the Giants part where you're [TS]

01:26:04   navigating through the battlefield and [TS]

01:26:05   that was disturbing I mean there's the [TS]

01:26:06   part where you have to like shoot the [TS]

01:26:08   crossbow not the guy that came into the [TS]

01:26:10   dead Giants night because Alice if thats [TS]

01:26:12   that's something I haven't done in a [TS]

01:26:13   game before i had not caused the giant [TS]

01:26:15   axe to fall to chop off someone's leg so [TS]

01:26:17   I can pass through the linear car door [TS]

01:26:19   of a game it was pretty brutal [TS]

01:26:21   I mean yeah that's surprise my kids [TS]

01:26:23   about that was hilarious [TS]

01:26:24   yes that's the thing is the hanging and [TS]

01:26:26   the Giants getting chopped up that just [TS]

01:26:28   goes right over their heads [TS]

01:26:29   you're not leaving until you paddle they [TS]

01:26:30   can a canoe through a waterfall of blood [TS]

01:26:33   but that was hardly growth has been [TS]

01:26:35   impersonating a monster the tone never [TS]

01:26:37   really committed to like what when you [TS]

01:26:39   when you cut yourself in blood and get [TS]

01:26:40   on your brother shoulders like is that a [TS]

01:26:41   slapstick comedy moment or is it [TS]

01:26:43   horrifying because you're cutting you [TS]

01:26:44   and your brother when God and scary you [TS]

01:26:46   know a little bit like this one side [TS]

01:26:48   like it starts off very light-hearted [TS]

01:26:50   and you can go like harder than get dark [TS]

01:26:52   or whatever but it's like light-hearted [TS]

01:26:53   but then it gets like a dark but also [TS]

01:26:55   kind of slapstick and never quite knew [TS]

01:26:57   where it was going there just kind of [TS]

01:26:59   teetering back and forth and then at the [TS]

01:27:00   end he really wants to go for the gut [TS]

01:27:02   punch and it's like wow it's like you [TS]

01:27:04   have always liked was not know i mean it [TS]

01:27:05   like that you're always one single tone [TS]

01:27:07   I know but it's only a two-hour gate [TS]

01:27:10   minute I i like the transition I thought [TS]

01:27:11   it was cute the way it kind of like I [TS]

01:27:13   mean stuff gets darker and scarier and [TS]

01:27:15   and I thought my head was going out [TS]

01:27:17   tonight that that was the point at which [TS]

01:27:18   you know became interesting for me the [TS]

01:27:20   whole troll and mind sequence was all I [TS]

01:27:22   had been there done that and then that [TS]

01:27:24   they're out there with the wolves and [TS]

01:27:25   they're you know they run across the [TS]

01:27:27   guys hanging himself and this is just [TS]

01:27:29   got a little bit more going for that [TS]

01:27:31   didn't have anyone not say it not say [TS]

01:27:32   that here guy [TS]

01:27:34   no I think he liked you not have to i [TS]

01:27:36   know you don't have to you can just let [TS]

01:27:37   it go years let him hang [TS]

01:27:39   you never do that no I didn't do it [TS]

01:27:41   right I say we blew right through there [TS]

01:27:43   the people should play brothers I think [TS]

01:27:44   it's worth playing maybe I think more [TS]

01:27:46   than more than Steve I think it's you [TS]

01:27:47   know you should play a game that's good [TS]

01:27:49   no no I highly recommend people play it [TS]

01:27:51   i think that the art was gorgeous [TS]

01:27:53   although generic [TS]

01:27:54   and in fact I thought it was nice that [TS]

01:27:57   they placed benches at random areas just [TS]

01:27:59   matches the benches the most emblematic [TS]

01:28:03   thing about how this game is inspired by [TS]

01:28:06   ego but fails to live up to that [TS]

01:28:07   standard is they put the benches in so [TS]

01:28:09   obviously as a direct homage to the [TS]

01:28:12   benches and ego which you sit on with [TS]

01:28:13   with your order to save you and they did [TS]

01:28:16   it in such a way it like that [TS]

01:28:18   okay we're gonna do this we love that in [TS]

01:28:19   any code we're going to put them in our [TS]

01:28:20   game but they made you hold down both [TS]

01:28:23   triggers to stay on the bench the bench [TS]

01:28:25   is supposed to be relaxing [TS]

01:28:27   you can't make me tense both my fingers [TS]

01:28:28   and hold my turn with them the whole [TS]

01:28:29   time to stay on the benches they missed [TS]

01:28:31   the entire point of the benches [TS]

01:28:33   oh my god that drove him insane i was [TS]

01:28:35   every time I saw every time I saw bench [TS]

01:28:38   I got angry and Lee we don't know what's [TS]

01:28:40   it what's it like being driven insane [TS]

01:28:41   i'm not really sure but please play [TS]

01:28:44   short drives I've never met John in [TS]

01:28:46   person is there a thing that just [TS]

01:28:48   constantly throbs on a4a yes I thought [TS]

01:28:51   there is i'm all vain means all the way [TS]

01:28:54   down sometimes it just blood squirts out [TS]

01:28:56   of his eyes was talking I just couldn't [TS]

01:29:01   i consider because i love it's like the [TS]

01:29:03   typewriters and resident evil like it's [TS]

01:29:05   supposed to be an interlude it's [TS]

01:29:06   supposed to be the nice music plays and [TS]

01:29:08   everybody's come and we take a break and [TS]

01:29:10   are you just hold down both these [TS]

01:29:11   triggers hard as you can the whole done [TS]

01:29:12   otherwise you can't get the city can [TS]

01:29:14   look at the nice scenery if you don't [TS]

01:29:15   know the triggers for students you like [TS]

01:29:16   all one of them the cameras pans back [TS]

01:29:18   and you don't look at the scenery [TS]

01:29:19   anymore [TS]

01:29:19   I think you're holding your triggers too [TS]

01:29:21   long yeah i think that that's out of the [TS]

01:29:23   closet we're going to be a little [TS]

01:29:24   lighter on the trigger finger [TS]

01:29:26   Thank You retaining something else to [TS]

01:29:27   let it out man [TS]

01:29:29   are you there Steve it's me margaret I'm [TS]

01:29:34   a little conflicted about the fact that [TS]

01:29:36   I had to to make the one white bunny [TS]

01:29:38   become a black body in order for the [TS]

01:29:39   United that was a little distressing [TS]

01:29:41   yeah [TS]

01:29:42   nope you know that part didn't know what [TS]

01:29:44   I had no 90 triangle slipped off the [TS]

01:29:47   only thing I got no trophies it was [TS]

01:29:49   blowing the giant horn I Carol sheep all [TS]

01:29:52   the way to that thing to make the sheet [TS]

01:29:53   black it's a little cheaper irresistible [TS]

01:29:58   the sheep are the best part of the game [TS]

01:29:59   but like no no the best part is when you [TS]

01:30:02   fire your brother in a catapult that was [TS]

01:30:04   good that is awesome i liked writing the [TS]

01:30:07   glider because I did [TS]

01:30:07   that section like seven that was that [TS]

01:30:10   dialing not know you can hide I really [TS]

01:30:12   and I didn't know maybe you can join [TS]

01:30:14   that crafted many times many times I did [TS]

01:30:17   not like the younger brother going whoa [TS]

01:30:19   he was like bad flashbacks and yeah now [TS]

01:30:23   you transmit is his whole voice could [TS]

01:30:26   have gone completely out the window far [TS]

01:30:28   as I'm concerned you talk a little bit [TS]

01:30:31   about about things you play too many [TS]

01:30:32   times that the glider i kinda liked and [TS]

01:30:36   wish I could have done a little longer [TS]

01:30:38   because i really enjoyed that mechanic [TS]

01:30:39   of the the shimmying of the two guys on [TS]

01:30:41   the glider to make it till let me tell [TS]

01:30:43   you pick up far cry 3 or Assassin's [TS]

01:30:46   Creed unity and railways come on a lot [TS]

01:30:49   of time in a glider that I won't do it [TS]

01:30:51   yeah I refuse I know those games are too [TS]

01:30:54   long too long for just too long [TS]

01:30:56   give me another so is this some gamers [TS]

01:30:58   is this a new genre of game the [TS]

01:31:01   three-hour video game a two-hour video [TS]

01:31:03   game because if it is i really like it I [TS]

01:31:05   the time two hours good video game is no [TS]

01:31:07   yeah i think it is i mean i think that's [TS]

01:31:09   basically the idea is not every game has [TS]

01:31:11   to be 60 hours 60 bucks and some games [TS]

01:31:13   are shorting some games are long as you [TS]

01:31:15   know we can deliver games digitally and [TS]

01:31:17   we can price the price them however we [TS]

01:31:19   feel like it we have room for short [TS]

01:31:20   stories and novels [TS]

01:31:21   yes a game games have been getting [TS]

01:31:22   shorter for years now because it's so [TS]

01:31:24   much more expensive to create content [TS]

01:31:26   for them unless your rockstar can spend [TS]

01:31:27   200 million dollars on a game because [TS]

01:31:29   you games used to be routinely 20 30 40 [TS]

01:31:31   hours easily and now it's like case with [TS]

01:31:33   our budget we can make a 10-hour game [TS]

01:31:35   when it first started happening people [TS]

01:31:36   are like what a ripoff this is a [TS]

01:31:38   sixty-dollar game and i finished in 10 [TS]

01:31:39   hours but you know but it costs so much [TS]

01:31:41   money to do all this high res things [TS]

01:31:43   with all the the 3d models with more you [TS]

01:31:45   know polygons in them and everything and [TS]

01:31:48   all the music that you have to do in the [TS]

01:31:49   voice-acting it just became too [TS]

01:31:50   expensive and i think this is the [TS]

01:31:51   logical conclusion it's like all right [TS]

01:31:53   well now that people accept that [TS]

01:31:55   how about we condense down our best [TS]

01:31:56   ideas into as long as long as they take [TS]

01:31:59   and our may be our best ideas only feel [TS]

01:32:01   two hours and that's great because now [TS]

01:32:03   the budget for the assets that we have [TS]

01:32:04   to make all the voice-acting everything [TS]

01:32:05   isn't that big [TS]

01:32:06   and so here you go and I think people of [TS]

01:32:08   critics and players have proven they [TS]

01:32:10   like this type of game so i hope you see [TS]

01:32:12   more of in the future because it's [TS]

01:32:13   preferable to you know is the only other [TS]

01:32:15   option 200 million dollar GTA or a [TS]

01:32:17   really really crappy 10 our game I would [TS]

01:32:19   not [TS]

01:32:20   brother had this yeah i agree i I and as [TS]

01:32:22   somebody who like i said i have that [TS]

01:32:24   whole thing about I'm gonna buy this [TS]

01:32:25   game and I'm gonna play it for I'm gonna [TS]

01:32:27   play it for five or ten hours anyway [TS]

01:32:29   that's that's the most remember what do [TS]

01:32:30   so I would be happy to pay fifteen or [TS]

01:32:33   twenty dollars for a three-hour game [TS]

01:32:35   experience and then if I really really [TS]

01:32:37   like it then I'll go back into [TS]

01:32:39   achievements or things like that i mean [TS]

01:32:40   i play journey through three or four [TS]

01:32:42   times [TS]

01:32:42   my daughter was playing journey this [TS]

01:32:43   morning my wife's play journey all the [TS]

01:32:45   way through a couple of times i'm a [TS]

01:32:47   couple James away from getting the white [TS]

01:32:49   robe which is the last thing I wanted to [TS]

01:32:50   do in journey promote my daughter was [TS]

01:32:52   playing it today and singing to do you [TS]

01:32:54   know what a guy as they were going up [TS]

01:32:56   the mountain and it was great it was you [TS]

01:32:58   know do you see yourself playing [TS]

01:32:59   brothers again [TS]

01:33:00   uh no no no they're not going to play it [TS]

01:33:04   that way back in and played it to get [TS]

01:33:06   all the little side things and now i [TS]

01:33:07   feel like i've experienced everything in [TS]

01:33:09   that game so i don't think i need to do [TS]

01:33:11   that i might read about the side things [TS]

01:33:13   and if the side things sound interesting [TS]

01:33:15   maybe i would go back but i think it's [TS]

01:33:16   unlikely i'd actually rather play [TS]

01:33:18   journey again but i mean i don't think [TS]

01:33:20   i'll go back and play gone home again I [TS]

01:33:22   think I got everything you know about [TS]

01:33:24   that but you know yeah i won't i won't [TS]

01:33:26   play gone home again i met i will [TS]

01:33:27   probably have my son play through this [TS]

01:33:29   when I think he's old enough to handle [TS]

01:33:30   and appreciate it but I won't play [TS]

01:33:32   through it again but interestingly i [TS]

01:33:33   have played three co more than one time [TS]

01:33:35   and not because I'm getting like you [TS]

01:33:37   know I've done everything in that game a [TS]

01:33:39   million times but just because it's kind [TS]

01:33:41   of like watching a movie you've seen [TS]

01:33:42   over and over again and like you've got [TS]

01:33:44   home was just like a little bit better [TS]

01:33:46   maybe that would be the experience many [TS]

01:33:47   people do have that experience of like I [TS]

01:33:48   just wanted I know exactly what's gonna [TS]

01:33:50   happen this movie but i just want to [TS]

01:33:51   watch it again because such a ride i [TS]

01:33:52   play eco every couple of years over [TS]

01:33:55   again just because i love the experience [TS]

01:33:56   of playing the game even though I know [TS]

01:33:57   everything that's going to happen i [TS]

01:33:58   almost never play a narrative game again [TS]

01:34:01   the second time I just it's in some ways [TS]

01:34:03   it's so much so involving and so so much [TS]

01:34:06   work to go through it that you know i [TS]

01:34:08   just kind of find a kind of training and [TS]

01:34:10   the idea of like starting over again is [TS]

01:34:12   to me very very like oh god I don't [TS]

01:34:14   think I can take that especially when I [TS]

01:34:16   know where the plot goes even games were [TS]

01:34:18   like mass effect where you can change [TS]

01:34:19   the outcome I just effect mass effect [TS]

01:34:21   it's a little bit longer and play well [TS]

01:34:23   yeah I'm just saying I yeah a lot of [TS]

01:34:25   those games i just have trouble going [TS]

01:34:26   back to i mean the games that I play [TS]

01:34:28   over and over again more games with like [TS]

01:34:29   multiplayer stuff for you know it seems [TS]

01:34:31   they're more like [TS]

01:34:32   no sport games right perhaps but like [TS]

01:34:34   you know prince of persia it's like all [TS]

01:34:35   right I can try and like beat this right [TS]

01:34:37   like it farther in this game than I have [TS]

01:34:39   before what have you and i'm in the [TS]

01:34:41   replay the replay camp for sure because [TS]

01:34:43   i am in the midst of playing grim [TS]

01:34:45   fandango for like the fifth time right [TS]

01:34:46   now and just fantastic experience every [TS]

01:34:49   single time that these two probably not [TS]

01:34:52   so much [TS]

01:34:53   you know I rarely have wanted to go back [TS]

01:34:55   and reread are you there god it's me [TS]

01:34:57   margaret either so yeah i reckin fourth [TS]

01:35:01   grade nothing like 10 * well I do love [TS]

01:35:03   that one [TS]

01:35:03   if this had been more of in that vein I [TS]

01:35:05   would probably have played twice already [TS]

01:35:08   yeah i think the only games that I've [TS]

01:35:09   replayed regularly the LucasArts [TS]

01:35:11   adventure games like secret of monkey [TS]

01:35:12   island group and grim fandango and [TS]

01:35:14   things like that but yeah kind of like [TS]

01:35:16   chase and I have enough games and [TS]

01:35:17   haven't finished or haven't even got to [TS]

01:35:18   start yet that you know multiplayer is [TS]

01:35:20   really the only thing that gets me going [TS]

01:35:21   back to it i still have to finish eco [TS]

01:35:23   yeah you can start that over again it's [TS]

01:35:25   only 10 hours it's not like this we shit [TS]

01:35:27   shadow of the colossus to ego is the ego [TS]

01:35:30   is the old version of journey like in [TS]

01:35:31   terms of wow it's so short but it but [TS]

01:35:33   now compared to the actual to our [TS]

01:35:35   journey game I'll 10 hours that's like a [TS]

01:35:37   full game shadow I i continue to think [TS]

01:35:39   you'll never make it through but i wish [TS]

01:35:41   i wish you luck [TS]

01:35:42   it is long thanks thanks John it isn't [TS]

01:35:44   it is not short and there is you will [TS]

01:35:46   get frustrated and yeah which will be [TS]

01:35:49   said but like it has a higher skill [TS]

01:35:50   barrier than equals which is why i [TS]

01:35:52   totally recommend equal to almost [TS]

01:35:53   anybody and then shadow it's like with [TS]

01:35:55   your gamer you should play but if you're [TS]

01:35:57   not it's gonna burn you screw that huh [TS]

01:36:01   you should let you should like the first [TS]

01:36:02   the first level or 10 hours a boss [TS]

01:36:04   fights will wear on the end [TS]

01:36:06   yeah yeah that's yeah but will wear a [TS]

01:36:09   non-gamer but the first one is worth [TS]

01:36:10   experiencing and it's kind of a shame [TS]

01:36:11   you can't hear myself and everyone at [TS]

01:36:13   those that sounds like wearing on meat [TS]

01:36:14   now I get sound too terrible to me at [TS]

01:36:16   first i was like i love those you guys [TS]

01:36:18   made the second game it's all boss [TS]

01:36:19   fights I hate boss fights why would you [TS]

01:36:21   ever and then I'd like okay I get it and [TS]

01:36:23   it enjoyed it [TS]

01:36:24   yeah it is its yeah alright I i [TS]

01:36:27   recommend it [TS]

01:36:28   hey before we go I want to ask everybody [TS]

01:36:31   like we do with our book club we well I [TS]

01:36:34   I ask you what are you reading but that [TS]

01:36:36   would be very off topic for an episode [TS]

01:36:38   developed video games so how about what [TS]

01:36:40   are you playing Dan Morgan what are you [TS]

01:36:43   playing you know I'm a standstill this [TS]

01:36:46   Marco panelists Tony similar because the [TS]

01:36:48   the beginning I just played or we're [TS]

01:36:50   almost done with which we are playing [TS]

01:36:51   multiplayer is a game called monaco [TS]

01:36:52   which is super super fun and you should [TS]

01:36:54   pick it up things on steam as well as [TS]

01:36:56   experts like a multiplayer you know [TS]

01:36:59   yeah I co-simulation you do like slots [TS]

01:37:02   and baccarat less of that more of [TS]

01:37:04   robbing things blind super fun game that [TS]

01:37:07   like sort of follows a bunch of high [TS]

01:37:09   strokes like you have different [TS]

01:37:09   characters like a locksmith and the guy [TS]

01:37:11   knocks people out and look out and [TS]

01:37:13   they'll have special powers and the top [TS]

01:37:14   down very stylized game but it's a lot [TS]

01:37:17   of fun great multiplayer I mean one of [TS]

01:37:21   the better multiplayer experiences I've [TS]

01:37:22   had a really really long time and yeah I [TS]

01:37:25   i highly recommend it it's not too long [TS]

01:37:27   not super stylized to like that's the [TS]

01:37:29   thing that yes even trying to figure out [TS]

01:37:32   the total and that's that's interesting [TS]

01:37:35   to it again we gamers if you played tons [TS]

01:37:37   of games with people look like people [TS]

01:37:38   like wow this does not look like games [TS]

01:37:40   and once you figure it out it all has a [TS]

01:37:42   language that kind of makes sense [TS]

01:37:44   you see the matrix is like all that you [TS]

01:37:46   stop seeing the big blocks you starting [TS]

01:37:47   seeing people [TS]

01:37:49   yeah that's cool i like it a lot Monica [TS]

01:37:52   ok now we go to game i'm also playing it [TS]

01:37:56   yeah Donny Tony Tony what else are you [TS]

01:37:59   playing or anything [TS]

01:38:00   um I've been playing Monica with gotta [TS]

01:38:02   go that's great i just finished [TS]

01:38:05   Assassin's Creed 3 which came out like a [TS]

01:38:07   year ago but obviously I was just [TS]

01:38:09   tearing through but it's an ok game i'm [TS]

01:38:11   trying to clear through my [TS]

01:38:13   embarrassingly large backlog so i can [TS]

01:38:14   play the new Grand Theft Auto but i have [TS]

01:38:16   two big backlog of my new games and I've [TS]

01:38:19   been playing a bunch of games on my iPad [TS]

01:38:20   recently the they came out with a new [TS]

01:38:22   version of small world that is has [TS]

01:38:23   multiplayer instead of just passing play [TS]

01:38:25   and that's been playing that i have [TS]

01:38:27   about seven or eight games a small world [TS]

01:38:28   going at any time I don't know Sony what [TS]

01:38:30   the hell [TS]

01:38:31   smallworlds you know if there is a board [TS]

01:38:33   game of that which I owned and play [TS]

01:38:34   previously and the absolutely the iOS [TS]

01:38:37   version of it is just great because it [TS]

01:38:38   does the the score keeping for you and [TS]

01:38:40   it you know it makes the rule [TS]

01:38:42   ok simpler by enforcing them in a game [TS]

01:38:44   state so you could as opposed to like [TS]

01:38:46   setting up and playing small world would [TS]

01:38:47   easily taken our this you can play a [TS]

01:38:49   game and you know 15 minutes on or you [TS]

01:38:51   know you play it one move a day over the [TS]

01:38:53   course of multiple days so I'm playing a [TS]

01:38:55   lot of that enjoy that [TS]

01:38:56   that means all right Steve what are you [TS]

01:38:59   playing can't believe it took you a year [TS]

01:39:01   to get the assassins creed 3 tony you [TS]

01:39:04   know I played all the other ones and I i [TS]

01:39:06   started playing assassin's creed 3 and [TS]

01:39:07   it did not grab me as much as the other [TS]

01:39:10   ones there's some interesting stuff in [TS]

01:39:12   there but it's a little bloated in terms [TS]

01:39:14   of having all this stuff that you can do [TS]

01:39:16   like you know you can be you know the [TS]

01:39:19   famous assassin or you can spend a lot [TS]

01:39:21   of time managing your like you know [TS]

01:39:22   merchants there's a whole merchant [TS]

01:39:24   minigame in here and I'm like why am I [TS]

01:39:25   doing this but I need to do this to earn [TS]

01:39:27   money so i can unlock the next thing and [TS]

01:39:28   ya didn't grab me but you do get to cut [TS]

01:39:31   out George Washington at the end so I [TS]

01:39:33   like that [TS]

01:39:34   well I just finished Ultima 5 that only [TS]

01:39:38   took me 25 years [TS]

01:39:39   yeah well I've never finished altima 4dr [TS]

01:39:43   going to start with we're back in the [TS]

01:39:44   day but I went to the Avatar i decided i [TS]

01:39:48   have to finish all of them except [TS]

01:39:50   perhaps for eight and 9i might not [TS]

01:39:53   necessarily have to deal with us if they [TS]

01:39:55   did not did not sound like they were [TS]

01:39:56   true to the ultimate mythos or gameplay [TS]

01:39:59   but at any rate finished altima five and [TS]

01:40:03   right now since it's a the halloween [TS]

01:40:05   season i finally got around to starting [TS]

01:40:08   diablo 3 is whichever yeah it's Diablo [TS]

01:40:11   slightly slightly dumped down from the [TS]

01:40:14   previous feel like looking [TS]

01:40:15   yeah whole lot of clicking hope you [TS]

01:40:17   enjoy carpal tunnel and it looks nice [TS]

01:40:20   that isolated monster is nice looking [TS]

01:40:22   game although not as nice as i was [TS]

01:40:23   expecting given well I mean it's still [TS]

01:40:25   Diablo that's it that's true that's true [TS]

01:40:28   so i'm having some fun with that at the [TS]

01:40:31   same time I'm starting up another replay [TS]

01:40:34   of Silent Hill 3 which is probably the [TS]

01:40:38   scariest of of the Silent Hill games at [TS]

01:40:41   least the ones that I've played which i [TS]

01:40:45   highly recommend for anybody who really [TS]

01:40:47   wants a good haunted town game not just [TS]

01:40:50   a haunted house and yeah that's a good [TS]

01:40:53   one [TS]

01:40:54   probably fourth or fifth replay of that [TS]

01:40:56   and it still scares the crap out of me [TS]

01:40:58   every single time and as mentioned i'm [TS]

01:41:01   also trucking through grim fandango [TS]

01:41:03   again because you got team every once in [TS]

01:41:06   awhile [TS]

01:41:06   what is that a-what can you play that on [TS]

01:41:08   right now [TS]

01:41:09   that did they put that to modern systems [TS]

01:41:10   now you gonna you got to do some dosbox [TS]

01:41:13   foo i didn't even talk to have checked [TS]

01:41:16   good old games to see if they've got a [TS]

01:41:18   version of that but because a bunch of [TS]

01:41:20   the classic LucasArts adventures they [TS]

01:41:21   ported for some of them are even [TS]

01:41:22   available for iOS like Secret of Monkey [TS]

01:41:24   Island but not not all of them [TS]

01:41:27   grim fandango is a great one it's [TS]

01:41:29   fantastic probably the best adventure [TS]

01:41:31   game i think all told you know story and [TS]

01:41:35   puzzles and everything combined it's [TS]

01:41:36   probably best that I've ever played and [TS]

01:41:38   I played a lot i like that i think i [TS]

01:41:40   like the little slightly wackier ones [TS]

01:41:42   that like salmon max but Griffin it was [TS]

01:41:44   a great game there's a lot of wackiness [TS]

01:41:45   though in grim fandango probably more [TS]

01:41:47   than I remember I remember [TS]

01:41:49   yeah just having the guy who played not [TS]

01:41:52   el guapo but his his sidekick who asks [TS]

01:41:55   about the or who who says there's a [TS]

01:41:57   plethora of pinatas without actually [TS]

01:41:59   knowing what a plethora is as the main [TS]

01:42:01   characters voice is is a huge boon is [TS]

01:42:04   he's he's hilarious for anyone [TS]

01:42:07   unfamiliar contango grim fandango is [TS]

01:42:08   film noir meets Mexican Day of the Dead [TS]

01:42:11   and you're basically a kind of a travel [TS]

01:42:15   agent for the dead who get your affected [TS]

01:42:16   your rewrite a murder mystery you know [TS]

01:42:19   except it's an interesting murder [TS]

01:42:21   mystery because everyone's dead [TS]

01:42:24   I fantastic game if any of you have not [TS]

01:42:26   played that i highly recommend you seek [TS]

01:42:28   that out because it is literally other [TS]

01:42:30   probably in my top three games ever [TS]

01:42:33   yeah that's that's right didn't sell [TS]

01:42:35   very well because it came out in 1998 at [TS]

01:42:37   the same year that I starcraft and [TS]

01:42:39   half-life game [TS]

01:42:39   ok so Tim Schafer though you can't go [TS]

01:42:41   wrong I'm Schaefer so if you're playing [TS]

01:42:45   against even the video game draft yes we [TS]

01:42:48   do some crazy like that video games are [TS]

01:42:50   at early [TS]

01:42:51   yeah you're sad and happy at the same [TS]

01:42:53   time John circular what are you playing [TS]

01:42:56   so I'm going through the HD remake of [TS]

01:42:59   wind maker which is a game is the first [TS]

01:43:01   of the game that I had my son play and [TS]

01:43:03   he's played through it many many times i [TS]

01:43:04   played through many many times I don't [TS]

01:43:06   know if I would be interested in going [TS]

01:43:07   through it again [TS]

01:43:08   but they changed enough things that i [TS]

01:43:10   mentioned the first of all looks looks [TS]

01:43:11   really nice and it looks different than [TS]

01:43:13   the original game not just because HD [TS]

01:43:16   but because they change the graphics a [TS]

01:43:18   little bit as well just a little bit and [TS]

01:43:19   just it comes off differently but it [TS]

01:43:21   does make me do it is appreciate how [TS]

01:43:23   amazing the original games graphics [TS]

01:43:24   cards i think now it's slightly less [TS]

01:43:26   pure than it was but it's very pretty [TS]

01:43:28   looking [TS]

01:43:29   oh but I have complaints about this [TS]

01:43:31   remake mostly having to do what you [TS]

01:43:33   really get the control know you have [TS]

01:43:35   time look nice [TS]

01:43:36   I so wish I could play this game with [TS]

01:43:38   the original controller because they be [TS]

01:43:40   the gamepad and the pro controller both [TS]

01:43:43   we have both of them we tried both of [TS]

01:43:45   them either one of them comes close to [TS]

01:43:47   the experience of playing the game with [TS]

01:43:48   the original controller and the menu [TS]

01:43:50   systems all god how many times I have to [TS]

01:43:51   go to those menus like I guess it's nice [TS]

01:43:53   to be using the touchpad all I can look [TS]

01:43:55   at his touch or whatever but that I find [TS]

01:43:57   that slower than the muscle memory of [TS]

01:43:59   like going into the screen and picking [TS]

01:44:01   an item and coming back out quickly [TS]

01:44:02   continually frustrated but that's every [TS]

01:44:04   time I had to to visit the the inventory [TS]

01:44:07   stranger or deal with the control system [TS]

01:44:09   it's frustrating but the game looks [TS]

01:44:10   beautiful and they changed the game just [TS]

01:44:12   enough to get rid of the super annoying [TS]

01:44:14   things like we have a new sale that [TS]

01:44:15   makes you go twice as fast and that [TS]

01:44:16   makes that makes a lot of difference i [TS]

01:44:18   was going to say I always felt like that [TS]

01:44:19   game was padded with having a sale over [TS]

01:44:22   here that's a light game I like the [TS]

01:44:24   sailing and I I always thought they [TS]

01:44:25   should have condensed into like in the [TS]

01:44:28   middle of this game is one big massive [TS]

01:44:29   sea journey that you feel a sense of [TS]

01:44:31   accomplishment with after having [TS]

01:44:33   completed but they didn't do that is [TS]

01:44:35   that it's a bunch of series of small [TS]

01:44:36   trips but I if you've never played the [TS]

01:44:38   game I almost say that you should like [TS]

01:44:40   get a gamecube or our game compatible we [TS]

01:44:43   and play the original instead of the HD [TS]

01:44:45   remake which I usually don't say about [TS]

01:44:46   HD remakes but this year it does feel [TS]

01:44:49   like a different game and it feels like [TS]

01:44:50   a game made for people who played the [TS]

01:44:52   first game was just fine i'm one of [TS]

01:44:54   those people but that's the only [TS]

01:44:55   reservation i would say is if you've [TS]

01:44:57   never played the original game your i [TS]

01:44:59   would say play the original games you [TS]

01:45:01   have played the original game it's worth [TS]

01:45:02   getting this to revisit it with a little [TS]

01:45:04   twist [TS]

01:45:05   where does that rank is as far as your [TS]

01:45:06   favorite little games don't you think [TS]

01:45:08   ah it if fluctuates because it and it is [TS]

01:45:12   wrapped up a little bit of my sons and [TS]

01:45:13   like the cars movie it's not my number [TS]

01:45:16   one for sure at it's like fighting two [TS]

01:45:19   and three maybe [TS]

01:45:21   twilight princess keeps going up as i [TS]

01:45:23   get older [TS]

01:45:25   by the way that in the reference to HD [TS]

01:45:27   remakes stay the hell away from the [TS]

01:45:29   silent hill 2 and 3 HD ram not that you [TS]

01:45:32   guys are going to rush out and buy him [TS]

01:45:33   anything but wow did they do a [TS]

01:45:36   screwed-up job on that poor yeah those [TS]

01:45:38   are really like HD HD remix out there [TS]

01:45:40   just like we got the game to run on a [TS]

01:45:42   newer system basically and it turns out [TS]

01:45:44   that they had I think some some early [TS]

01:45:46   code before had fully been debugged but [TS]

01:45:48   i think the biggest problem is that they [TS]

01:45:49   that team silent when they made those [TS]

01:45:51   games they really did some weird things [TS]

01:45:54   with the hardware and I think that that [TS]

01:45:56   one of the crucial components of the [TS]

01:45:57   Silent Hill games is the fog [TS]

01:46:03   man walked right into that one day they [TS]

01:46:10   failed utterly to render the fog [TS]

01:46:12   properly in these remakes and I think [TS]

01:46:14   it's because they were doing something [TS]

01:46:15   just really bizarre with the hardware to [TS]

01:46:17   make it work properly and it was trying [TS]

01:46:20   to make it work with the the playstation [TS]

01:46:22   3 graphics hardware just was beyond the [TS]

01:46:24   Ken of these Porter's I think they had a [TS]

01:46:25   lot of budget to work with anyway but [TS]

01:46:29   yeah I mean that the game is pretty much [TS]

01:46:31   completely ruined too far more than [TS]

01:46:33   three but yeah if you feel that you want [TS]

01:46:36   to get into the Silent Hill universe [TS]

01:46:38   stay the hell away from the thinking [TS]

01:46:40   high-def remakes because it actually [TS]

01:46:42   they actually have destroyed the game [TS]

01:46:44   it amazes me that you love these old [TS]

01:46:45   games so much it seems that such a low [TS]

01:46:47   tolerance for like the gameplay tropes [TS]

01:46:48   my god gone home with Judy Blume book in [TS]

01:46:51   the skate like you're such a grumpy old [TS]

01:46:52   man with the gameplay trailer so you go [TS]

01:46:54   back to play these games and they have [TS]

01:46:55   so many creepy things number of the [TS]

01:46:57   control scheme to like the the gameplay [TS]

01:46:59   mechanics limited limited by the [TS]

01:47:00   technology of the time but you're [TS]

01:47:02   totally tolerant of those but any new [TS]

01:47:03   game that comes out not taking that crap [TS]

01:47:05   from this game [TS]

01:47:06   well I can appreciate them for for [TS]

01:47:08   having played them when they were out so [TS]

01:47:10   you know I can forgive a game that's 15 [TS]

01:47:12   years old for playing like 15 year-old [TS]

01:47:14   John you would never be critical of a [TS]

01:47:16   movie where they went back and redid [TS]

01:47:18   certain scenes and smooth you know [TS]

01:47:20   improved graphics and stuff like that [TS]

01:47:22   right now that's as i wrote I wrote a [TS]

01:47:25   blog post about this why why do I hate [TS]

01:47:26   the prequels and make this ball is [TS]

01:47:28   different why don't the special editions [TS]

01:47:30   and I'm don't hate remakes of video [TS]

01:47:32   games and i wrote a whole blog post [TS]

01:47:33   about it now if you're just joining us [TS]

01:47:35   this is our for of hypercritical he's [TS]

01:47:38   not so if you were to go to [TS]

01:47:39   hypercritical taco and read my post [TS]

01:47:41   about the winwaker remake you would [TS]

01:47:43   learn all about it which we remake is [TS]

01:47:46   that we can remember it for you [TS]

01:47:47   wholesale that you got it i read that [TS]

01:47:49   months but when the game was announced [TS]

01:47:50   before the game actually came out and [TS]

01:47:52   explains in detail why I think game [TS]

01:47:55   remakes are more acceptable to me then [TS]

01:47:57   going back and changing a movie [TS]

01:47:59   alright the short answer is i can still [TS]

01:48:01   play the original winwaker boom George [TS]

01:48:03   Lucas Jason what are you playing right [TS]

01:48:05   now [TS]

01:48:06   dan I'm playing like some some [TS]

01:48:08   battleship [TS]

01:48:09   whenever quality stuff there maybe maybe [TS]

01:48:13   words with friends stratego ya little [TS]

01:48:17   minesweeper little solitaire some mario [TS]

01:48:21   kart wii long little mancala go away [TS]

01:48:24   thanks war [TS]
