353: Young Sexy Harry Mudd

00:00:01   the Intolerable number 353 may 2017 [TS]

00:00:10   [Music] [TS]

00:00:13   welcome back everybody to the [TS]

00:00:15   incomparable we're doing a flash podcast [TS]

00:00:17   here to talk about trailer that's right [TS]

00:00:18   people are really just desperately [TS]

00:00:20   wanted us to talk about that uh that [TS]

00:00:22   Star Wars trailer and we're not gonna [TS]

00:00:23   instead we're gonna talk about the Star [TS]

00:00:25   Trek Discovery trailer that got released [TS]

00:00:26   this week sorry [TS]

00:00:29   Star Wars fans but hey Star Trek fans [TS]

00:00:32   we're gonna talk and speculate a little [TS]

00:00:34   bit about the much promoted and not yet [TS]

00:00:37   you know much delayed but now we've got [TS]

00:00:40   something to talk about about Star Trek [TS]

00:00:41   discovery joining me to talk about Star [TS]

00:00:43   Trek discovery are these wonderful [TS]

00:00:44   people David Jay Laura hello hey may the [TS]

00:00:46   force be with you Jason thank you David [TS]

00:00:48   and also with you Tony Sindelar is also [TS]

00:00:50   there hello hi hi Scott McNulty is here [TS]

00:00:53   because he's a Star Trek expert and I [TS]

00:00:55   don't like to talk about Star Trek [TS]

00:00:56   without him this is a non random Trek [TS]

00:00:58   for you Scott that is true this is a [TS]

00:01:00   carefully selected Trek and for Star [TS]

00:01:03   Wars fans the trailer starts off on a [TS]

00:01:05   desert planet and you Star Wars people [TS]

00:01:06   love district planets right yeah totally [TS]

00:01:09   Moises Giuliana's here hello Jason snow [TS]

00:01:12   my old friend none of this would have [TS]

00:01:14   happened if Gene Roddenberry were a lie [TS]

00:01:16   sure he'd be Ferriero that very very old [TS]

00:01:20   and again another one of my Star Trek [TS]

00:01:23   ringers Brianna Wu is back hello what's [TS]

00:01:25   up I has been we were born to sense [TS]

00:01:29   death and that's why I'm here I'm here [TS]

00:01:32   comprable today that's good are you not [TS]

00:01:35   feeling good about the are you stating [TS]

00:01:37   off death or are you welcoming death by [TS]

00:01:39   doing this I I'm welcoming it okay good [TS]

00:01:42   let's let's do it good that's all that's [TS]

00:01:43   all for the best so we got we got two [TS]

00:01:46   two minutes and 24 seconds of a Star [TS]

00:01:49   Trek trailer to talk about Jason I think [TS]

00:01:51   we've done two minutes and 24 seconds [TS]

00:01:53   alright thanks everybody for listening [TS]

00:01:54   let everybody keep your real nerds but [TS]

00:01:56   that's good everybody signed off that's [TS]

00:01:58   great we do start out on a desert planet [TS]

00:02:00   so I guess we should talk about that icy [TS]

00:02:02   desert planets in Star Trek and I think [TS]

00:02:03   Vulcan but it could be Vulcan it could [TS]

00:02:05   be something totally different I mean I [TS]

00:02:06   don't know why they'd be walking around [TS]

00:02:08   in the desert on Vulcan and being lost [TS]

00:02:11   but that's where we meet [TS]

00:02:13   the the two characters here we have [TS]

00:02:16   Michelle Yeoh as Captain George Yeo and [TS]

00:02:18   also we have our series leads in equal [TS]

00:02:22   art and green as Michael Barnum and they [TS]

00:02:24   are walking across the desert having a [TS]

00:02:25   chat about Burnham's career prospects as [TS]

00:02:29   you do I should do she doesn't have a [TS]

00:02:31   she doesn't have a star to guide her [TS]

00:02:33   because they're in a cloudy desert [TS]

00:02:36   that's right they Lindy they seem to [TS]

00:02:38   have tricorders which I would imagine [TS]

00:02:40   would help them if they were lost but [TS]

00:02:43   I'm assuming it's a sandstorm of yeah [TS]

00:02:46   interference Scotty yeah the big [TS]

00:02:47   billowing clouds suggest that there's [TS]

00:02:49   she actually glances over her shoulder [TS]

00:02:51   one point is like like why are we out [TS]

00:02:53   here we're before tos and after [TS]

00:02:55   enterprise all bets are off [TS]

00:02:57   well that's are off so it's Arrakis oh [TS]

00:02:59   the spice must flow so I'm not sure that [TS]

00:03:03   this that that there isn't something [TS]

00:03:05   that whether this is linear or not but I [TS]

00:03:08   think it's an interesting introduction [TS]

00:03:09   since since Burnham is going to be our [TS]

00:03:11   main character throughout the show we [TS]

00:03:13   get to see her talking to her captain [TS]

00:03:15   now what what they said in PR which I [TS]

00:03:18   guess we should believe is that Michelle [TS]

00:03:20   iya is being it she's the captain of the [TS]

00:03:23   Shenzhen and that that's supported by [TS]

00:03:25   this trailer and that's a Western show [TS]

00:03:27   Sorry Sorry [TS]

00:03:29   Shenzhen is is where about whether big [TS]

00:03:32   actions [TS]

00:03:32   it's the Shenzhen Jojo name you're right [TS]

00:03:34   of the Chinese of the Chinese space [TS]

00:03:36   burger and there's a little robot that's [TS]

00:03:38   got a Shinjo like label on it later for [TS]

00:03:42   like a half a second which suggests that [TS]

00:03:43   that brilliant that Liu Sheng Joe is [TS]

00:03:46   indeed [TS]

00:03:47   well Star Trek is all about the branding [TS]

00:03:48   so this is this is obviously from the [TS]

00:03:50   beginning of the first episode because [TS]

00:03:51   the idea here is that this is where [TS]

00:03:53   Burnham starts but she doesn't end here [TS]

00:03:56   she will go on to beyond the titular USS [TS]

00:03:59   Discovery at some point none of which we [TS]

00:04:01   see we see in this trailer so I like [TS]

00:04:03   that about it that it doesn't seem to be [TS]

00:04:05   spoiling its entire premise by by what [TS]

00:04:09   it shows us in this first teaser it's [TS]

00:04:11   not we don't even see the the starship [TS]

00:04:14   discovery in the teaser at all yeah or [TS]

00:04:16   the captain or the composedly yeah it's [TS]

00:04:18   not bad [TS]

00:04:19   III don't mind I don't mind being teased [TS]

00:04:21   and not having the entire pilot of the [TS]

00:04:24   show strip-mine four parts to show [TS]

00:04:26   Oh totally I approve yeah that's good so [TS]

00:04:29   what people think about this the you [TS]

00:04:31   want you want to break it down bit by [TS]

00:04:32   bit we've got to start the desert if we [TS]

00:04:34   do that if you gotta do it let's just [TS]

00:04:37   take it stick in order that's right I [TS]

00:04:39   will say that there was a really nice [TS]

00:04:40   Twitter thread that I liked that Liz [TS]

00:04:42   Myles who's often on our podcasts did [TS]

00:04:44   about how just she's blown away by the [TS]

00:04:46   fact that the very first thing we see is [TS]

00:04:48   two women of color having a conversation [TS]

00:04:51   about their career in so it's not about [TS]

00:04:55   men passes the Bechdel test immediately [TS]

00:04:57   and she's like this is modern Star Trek [TS]

00:05:00   and it is pretty cool um so what yeah [TS]

00:05:03   what do people think about this a little [TS]

00:05:04   little desert walk that ends with a [TS]

00:05:06   surprise Kirk like almost like a ha but [TS]

00:05:09   I can call a spaceship and then we could [TS]

00:05:11   night I loved it but yeah that for me [TS]

00:05:14   was a big overriding feeling for the [TS]

00:05:17   whole trailer that we only get more of [TS]

00:05:20   as we go which is that it feels like [TS]

00:05:22   some of the cool nifty sci-fi stuff that [TS]

00:05:25   we've gotten in other mediums while [TS]

00:05:27   we've been waiting for a news Trek [TS]

00:05:29   series to exist [TS]

00:05:29   yeah Bri would you think about this [TS]

00:05:31   opening well obviously I'm very psyched [TS]

00:05:33   uh you know I was out I was out trying [TS]

00:05:36   to get of town and I was working on my [TS]

00:05:38   car and I get this frantic call my [TS]

00:05:40   husband's phone and I pick it up it's my [TS]

00:05:43   neighbor and he's so upset about the [TS]

00:05:45   Star Trek trailer I thought it was just [TS]

00:05:47   absolutely terrible and he's just [TS]

00:05:50   blasting me I'm like oh go inside Frank [TS]

00:05:52   and I watch it and it was the same thing [TS]

00:05:54   like you see two women of color talking [TS]

00:05:57   to each other and I was just like this [TS]

00:05:59   is great this is awesome [TS]

00:06:01   it does worry me I am of the opinion the [TS]

00:06:05   Voyager is held in low regard by most [TS]

00:06:07   Trek fans because of unconscious sexism [TS]

00:06:10   I think a big part of it is that they [TS]

00:06:12   didn't actually why I also agree with [TS]

00:06:13   that well to be fair the first season [TS]

00:06:15   was not good I I don't agree with that [TS]

00:06:18   so I worry about I worry [TS]

00:06:20   I worry in talking about the show about [TS]

00:06:24   politicizing it from the very beginning [TS]

00:06:27   of it and I'm I'm hyper excited about [TS]

00:06:30   this like this is like I fought for this [TS]

00:06:32   so hard in my own career it's awesome [TS]

00:06:35   this is Star Trek in 2017 and that's [TS]

00:06:38   great [TS]

00:06:39   they're not in [TS]

00:06:40   this opening scene because they're women [TS]

00:06:41   that's the thing that is just irrelevant [TS]

00:06:42   they're Starfleet officers having a [TS]

00:06:44   conversation about her career the the [TS]

00:06:45   fact that Michelle Yeoh is is playing a [TS]

00:06:48   Starfleet captain and not just a [TS]

00:06:50   Starfleet captain who shows up in an [TS]

00:06:51   episode of something to say oh hello [TS]

00:06:53   Captain Picard how's it going yes we'll [TS]

00:06:55   help you with this blockade run that [TS]

00:06:56   you're doing the the fact that the [TS]

00:06:57   United Federation of Planets [TS]

00:06:59   right off the bat feels like the United [TS]

00:07:01   Federation of Planets with humans from [TS]

00:07:03   Earth that aren't just from the United [TS]

00:07:05   States and a couple of their funny [TS]

00:07:06   friends from other continents every once [TS]

00:07:09   in a while having her front and center [TS]

00:07:10   feels like the exact opposite of of [TS]

00:07:12   tokenism right off the start because [TS]

00:07:14   yeah she has the poise and presence of a [TS]

00:07:17   Starfleet captain whether we see her at [TS]

00:07:19   the forefront of this show as it goes [TS]

00:07:22   forward I mean we know that Michael [TS]

00:07:23   Burnham is is supposed to be our lead [TS]

00:07:25   but her having a prominent role whether [TS]

00:07:28   we see a little of her or a lot of her [TS]

00:07:29   she has the kind of presence that a [TS]

00:07:32   literal cinema legend that to me was was [TS]

00:07:35   the thing that just as we get this first [TS]

00:07:37   breadth of things that that really that [TS]

00:07:40   really made me feel good in particular [TS]

00:07:42   looking at the demographics of planet [TS]

00:07:44   Earth and humans on planet earth right [TS]

00:07:47   the fact that Star Trek has like not had [TS]

00:07:51   a whole lot of Chinese participation [TS]

00:07:54   over the years to have Michelle Yeoh as [TS]

00:07:56   a captain to have the shinzo as the ship [TS]

00:08:00   it's a big deal I like like it didn't [TS]

00:08:03   it's not logical that humans leaving [TS]

00:08:06   Earth would be largely Americans and [TS]

00:08:09   Europeans right it should be a broader [TS]

00:08:12   worldview and so this a little bit like [TS]

00:08:14   having Chekov beyond the on the [TS]

00:08:16   enterprise looks like oh of course there [TS]

00:08:18   should be Russians in space so they [TS]

00:08:19   added Chekov it's like yeah because of [TS]

00:08:21   you know you're a government stuff yeah [TS]

00:08:23   yeah like he was a big deal to be the [TS]

00:08:25   first man in space whatever so to add a [TS]

00:08:27   Chinese presence and Starfleet here [TS]

00:08:29   right out of the bat it's like that's [TS]

00:08:30   smart it's the way the way it should be [TS]

00:08:32   Tony what do you think of this opening [TS]

00:08:35   any any any thoughts in the desert and [TS]

00:08:37   with the reveal of the ship coming [TS]

00:08:39   through the dust storm I guess I like it [TS]

00:08:41   it's a dramatic you know if you have the [TS]

00:08:44   trailer magic where you don't know [TS]

00:08:45   what's going on in [TS]

00:08:46   is the context right like are they in [TS]

00:08:49   dire straits wandering through a [TS]

00:08:50   sandstorm or you know or they just just [TS]

00:08:52   doing their job are they talking about [TS]

00:08:55   this because this might be the last [TS]

00:08:56   conversation they ever have or this is [TS]

00:08:58   just you know they don't have a lot of [TS]

00:08:59   time away from the rest of the crew and [TS]

00:09:01   she wants to impart this wisdom before [TS]

00:09:03   they beam up so exciting and fun [TS]

00:09:06   introduction to these two characters we [TS]

00:09:09   get some we get some transporter being [TS]

00:09:11   action too which is nice yeah yeah Scott [TS]

00:09:14   what do you think of the transporter [TS]

00:09:16   beam in particular been offended you or [TS]

00:09:20   you found a sign or anything else about [TS]

00:09:22   the desert I thought it was interesting [TS]

00:09:24   I did think about the transporter beam [TS]

00:09:26   because that's the kind of Star Trek [TS]

00:09:27   nerd that I am I'm with you and so an [TS]

00:09:29   enterprise they established the fact [TS]

00:09:31   that transporters not so reliable they [TS]

00:09:34   are still trying them out they don't use [TS]

00:09:36   them a lot so I was happy to see that [TS]

00:09:38   this is ten years old [TS]

00:09:40   I forget how what the difference between [TS]

00:09:41   enterprise in the original series is but [TS]

00:09:43   this is ten years before the original [TS]

00:09:45   series [TS]

00:09:45   so clearly the kinks have been worked [TS]

00:09:47   out yeah I did like that so it seems [TS]

00:09:50   like there's like a grid that appears on [TS]

00:09:51   the the targets of the transporting [TS]

00:09:54   which I thought was a cool effect of [TS]

00:09:55   them a little traditional swirl around [TS]

00:09:57   so thumbs up on the new transporter [TS]

00:09:59   effect nice that's right I company also [TS]

00:10:01   like the new Klingons so come at me yeah [TS]

00:10:05   yeah I'll get there is we do get the [TS]

00:10:09   following there's some there's some [TS]

00:10:11   voiceover and we see we we see Burnham [TS]

00:10:17   on the bridge of her ship looks like [TS]

00:10:20   this is uh this is michelle yeoh ship do [TS]

00:10:23   we do we do we have the lengthy [TS]

00:10:25   discussion about the the meanings of [TS]

00:10:27   uniforms now or do we save that friendly [TS]

00:10:29   I think we got to talk about the [TS]

00:10:30   uniforms right now I think this is sorry [TS]

00:10:32   I'm but you know no you're right is this [TS]

00:10:35   is it I bet everybody who is in a [TS]

00:10:37   Starfleet uniform in this caste doesn't [TS]

00:10:39   understand how lucky they already have [TS]

00:10:41   pockets the uniforms because you know [TS]

00:10:44   back in the day being in Starfleet meant [TS]

00:10:46   not having any pockets and wearing a [TS]

00:10:48   body sock I assumed in the in the future [TS]

00:10:50   I would not have any personal items I [TS]

00:10:52   would not need any pockets personal [TS]

00:10:54   items like hands where do hands go okay [TS]

00:10:56   I've seen some people being bummed out [TS]

00:10:58   about how it they don't look like [TS]

00:11:00   original series and while I would love a [TS]

00:11:03   show that just fully embraced the [TS]

00:11:04   original series aesthetic nobody else [TS]

00:11:06   would Jason Jason what what you really [TS]

00:11:10   need on a starship is a velour sweater [TS]

00:11:12   mmm [TS]

00:11:14   this feels a little more like uh taking [TS]

00:11:17   the enterprise design and evolving it [TS]

00:11:21   forward toward I think like sort of [TS]

00:11:24   toward the JJ Abrams Star Trek design [TS]

00:11:26   it's it's modern but there's it's it's [TS]

00:11:29   sort of familiar um and there's gonna be [TS]

00:11:31   a theme for I think many of us perhaps [TS]

00:11:33   is its different and I'm okay with it [TS]

00:11:35   being different but what do you think we [TS]

00:11:37   all think of a lot of blue a lot of [TS]

00:11:40   little kind of Gold's gold stripes in [TS]

00:11:42   that famous emblem and as like a zipper [TS]

00:11:44   it kind of made me think of you know [TS]

00:11:46   Nick Nick Meyer is involved in this and [TS]

00:11:48   he was the one who sort of said you know [TS]

00:11:50   what let's forget the motion picture [TS]

00:11:52   costumes and let's go naval and military [TS]

00:11:54   and all that and I think that's that [TS]

00:11:56   might be a little bit of his influence [TS]

00:11:58   saying all right the enterprise uniforms [TS]

00:12:00   kind of made sense but let's do [TS]

00:12:02   something a little nicer and and it [TS]

00:12:04   almost feels like it would evolve [TS]

00:12:06   eventually into the Wrath of Khan era [TS]

00:12:09   Wow you know Jim I haven't thought of [TS]

00:12:11   that but I think maybe you're right so [TS]

00:12:12   leo blue version that's headed toward [TS]

00:12:13   the Wrath of Khan kind of costumes what [TS]

00:12:15   right clothes I think that this also [TS]

00:12:17   doesn't necessarily preclude the notion [TS]

00:12:21   that ten years from now the right middle [TS]

00:12:22   manager inside of Starfleet middle [TS]

00:12:24   management decided you know what [TS]

00:12:26   everybody's always complaining they want [TS]

00:12:29   their uniforms to be less stuffy they [TS]

00:12:31   want to be more relaxed so they go they [TS]

00:12:32   have not too many pockets yeah too many [TS]

00:12:34   pockets I mean do you want a different [TS]

00:12:37   texture black slacks keys and uh [TS]

00:12:40   everybody gets a cup I got a deal on [TS]

00:12:41   these colored shirts so no we're gonna [TS]

00:12:43   go in that now you know it's something [TS]

00:12:45   that you know you can wear a girdle with [TS]

00:12:46   it'll look really good yeah and there's [TS]

00:12:48   an alternate rap for the captain's who [TS]

00:12:50   are large right right so something I [TS]

00:12:53   think is really interesting to think [TS]

00:12:54   about when you last television series [TS]

00:12:57   came out you know like CRTs were the [TS]

00:13:02   main way that most of the saw you know [TS]

00:13:04   Star Trek I mean when Enterprise came [TS]

00:13:06   out we were just barely like moving into [TS]

00:13:09   LCD and you know higher def formats [TS]

00:13:12   so something I notice is if you like [TS]

00:13:15   look at a Star Trek costume like from [TS]

00:13:18   Voyager or TNG on ebay it doesn't really [TS]

00:13:22   have the pop of a movie costume so I [TS]

00:13:26   look at this I see a live texture in the [TS]

00:13:29   fabric detail is just subtle it's like [TS]

00:13:31   it's it's cutting the difference between [TS]

00:13:34   like a more pragmatic like jumpsuit that [TS]

00:13:37   you might wear in space and you know [TS]

00:13:40   like a movie costume so I I like it I [TS]

00:13:43   think it's splitting the difference just [TS]

00:13:45   like you said Jason and it's it's [TS]

00:13:47   awesome I need a costume thoughts we [TS]

00:13:49   cannot get it out now let it out let [TS]

00:13:50   your inner cosmic there are pips pips on [TS]

00:13:53   the badges I like the design I think I [TS]

00:13:55   would I miss the the you know using [TS]

00:13:58   color to indicate what what their role [TS]

00:14:00   is right unless everybody that we see is [TS]

00:14:03   has the same role I like the more [TS]

00:14:05   dramatic but I do like the use of color [TS]

00:14:07   but well they they have different colors [TS]

00:14:10   I think because the alien but I mean [TS]

00:14:11   it's the dance color right yeah well [TS]

00:14:15   they have like those stripes or [TS]

00:14:16   different colors I think yes yeah that's [TS]

00:14:19   your rank insignia kind of thingy I [TS]

00:14:20   think we have we have our first glimpse [TS]

00:14:23   of a cannon character in the net very [TS]

00:14:29   next shot which is CEREC who's played by [TS]

00:14:32   james frain here he has a conversation [TS]

00:14:35   with Burnham in a couple of places and [TS]

00:14:39   we'll get more of Surak later there are [TS]

00:14:42   a couple of cannon characters that are [TS]

00:14:45   existing Star Trek characters that are [TS]

00:14:47   going to be dropping into discovery at [TS]

00:14:49   some point [TS]

00:14:50   how does every feel about you know 10 [TS]

00:14:53   years 10 years away from original series [TS]

00:14:56   you get to sort of do this younger [TS]

00:14:57   version of characters we saw in the [TS]

00:14:59   original series thing in Serac's the the [TS]

00:15:02   example how does everybody feel about [TS]

00:15:03   about this approach of you know [TS]

00:15:07   enterprise was harder to do this but [TS]

00:15:09   with with discovery they're going to be [TS]

00:15:11   able to do it and this is we've got a [TS]

00:15:13   new Sarek who's got obviously a personal [TS]

00:15:15   connection to our main character which [TS]

00:15:17   is kind of interesting [TS]

00:15:18   I can't wait for young sexy Harry Mudd I [TS]

00:15:20   mean I know I'm not alone I I did not [TS]

00:15:24   think that Harry Mudd was something I [TS]

00:15:26   needed more of in my life I thought it [TS]

00:15:27   was free of that and here it comes but [TS]

00:15:29   how do you how do you filled by Rainn [TS]

00:15:31   Wilson that's me that's me trying to [TS]

00:15:33   send Harry Mudd off into the Delta [TS]

00:15:35   Quadrant and as far away from this as [TS]

00:15:36   possible yeah hoping for it means that [TS]

00:15:38   they just won't even touch it I I don't [TS]

00:15:41   understand how that happens yeah yeah [TS]

00:15:43   but Zarek i think makes a lot of sense [TS]

00:15:45   when i heard that they were doing this i [TS]

00:15:46   was like oh that's kind of cool right [TS]

00:15:47   cuz welcome to live a long time and he [TS]

00:15:49   would have been in an important position [TS]

00:15:50   at that point this is you know 10 or 15 [TS]

00:15:53   years before journey to Babel yeah and [TS]

00:15:55   he can be a mentor figure and I mean he [TS]

00:15:57   doesn't have to be the focus of anything [TS]

00:16:00   but he can be he can be a nice tether [TS]

00:16:01   where as Harry Mudd it's like why why [TS]

00:16:04   why why well we we have this plot about [TS]

00:16:07   sexy androids and who how would we how [TS]

00:16:10   would we make sexy androids believable [TS]

00:16:12   if we didn't have Harry Mudd it just it [TS]

00:16:14   doesn't work and so here we are the the [TS]

00:16:16   presence of Sarac ties this to the canon [TS]

00:16:19   in a way that that in the first glance [TS]

00:16:22   that this is makes me feel good about it [TS]

00:16:24   because with the weird divorce of the [TS]

00:16:26   Star Trek franchise where all the TV [TS]

00:16:29   stuff is in CBS's hands and the movies [TS]

00:16:30   or on Paramount's hands and it's kind of [TS]

00:16:32   a weird like Marvel TV versus movies [TS]

00:16:34   sort of a thing I'm much more [TS]

00:16:36   comfortable with the vast majority of [TS]

00:16:38   the Canon side of things where they're [TS]

00:16:40   at once visibly doing some new and [TS]

00:16:43   different things both aesthetically and [TS]

00:16:44   you know just with it the way that [TS]

00:16:46   they're telling the story where it's a [TS]

00:16:48   15 episode show in sort of like 25 [TS]

00:16:50   episodes of season I like that I'm [TS]

00:16:52   seeing that mix of things that they are [TS]

00:16:54   distinctly trying new things and that [TS]

00:16:57   they are not afraid to dig into you know [TS]

00:17:01   what when we get to the Klingons [TS]

00:17:03   with stuff that could be some really [TS]

00:17:05   weird big time like deep cut Trek nerd [TS]

00:17:09   lore type of stuff but and that's that's [TS]

00:17:11   the thing that it really excited me in [TS]

00:17:13   the beginning was when when they first [TS]

00:17:15   announced Bryan Fuller is going to do [TS]

00:17:16   this and it's like yeah Bryan Fuller god [TS]

00:17:19   has got to start on Voyager and he is a [TS]

00:17:21   trek nerd and he is he knows you know [TS]

00:17:24   it's not like one of these people who [TS]

00:17:26   goes oh yes I was hired I've never seen [TS]

00:17:28   an episode of Star Trek [TS]

00:17:30   like Nick Meyer loved him but he had [TS]

00:17:33   never seen Star Trek before Wrath of [TS]

00:17:34   Khan [TS]

00:17:35   and so you know I was I was expecting [TS]

00:17:38   some deep cuts and I'm glad to see we're [TS]

00:17:41   gonna get them I love that kind of world [TS]

00:17:43   building and I if it's done really well [TS]

00:17:45   uh it should be alright even Harry Mudd [TS]

00:17:49   I'm okay with Harry Mudd and we'll see [TS]

00:17:51   how sweet see how it's done I guess I [TS]

00:17:53   don't understand why we keep returning [TS]

00:17:55   to this era you know like Tos is awesome [TS]

00:18:00   but you know Enterprise went back to it [TS]

00:18:03   and then you've got the movies that are [TS]

00:18:04   all around this era am i the only person [TS]

00:18:07   that like wants to find out more about [TS]

00:18:10   like what happened to the Borg after [TS]

00:18:12   Voyager what happened to the Dominion [TS]

00:18:14   after ds9 I mean I want us to I want to [TS]

00:18:18   find out the next chapter of the story [TS]

00:18:20   and it's it's sort of frustrating to me [TS]

00:18:23   that every time again new Star Trek [TS]

00:18:24   property it seems to be going backwards [TS]

00:18:27   in time like where's the faith that the [TS]

00:18:30   ventures that are coming next or you [TS]

00:18:34   know worthwhile why do we keep like [TS]

00:18:36   retreading these same concepts because [TS]

00:18:39   it just it feels like this has been [TS]

00:18:40   everything we've done yet pretty much [TS]

00:18:42   this it turned the millennium there were [TS]

00:18:44   credible rumors that went around right [TS]

00:18:46   when the show was being announced that [TS]

00:18:48   this was going to actually be an [TS]

00:18:49   anthology show which it doesn't seem to [TS]

00:18:51   be necessarily but I agree like one of [TS]

00:18:54   the things that struck me as odd was [TS]

00:18:56   again we're going back in time again [TS]

00:18:58   we're going back to origin story ish [TS]

00:19:00   kind of territory rather than just going [TS]

00:19:04   on the back you know even if you're [TS]

00:19:05   going to 10 20 years in the future of [TS]

00:19:08   Voyager why not do that you know why why [TS]

00:19:13   say that all of the next generation [TS]

00:19:15   forward stuff is yet to come [TS]

00:19:16   you know what why are they telling this [TS]

00:19:19   story is a big question for me but you [TS]

00:19:22   know again like I'm cautiously [TS]

00:19:23   optimistic to where I trust that you [TS]

00:19:26   know I I have a very soft spot in my [TS]

00:19:28   heart for mirror universe episodes [TS]

00:19:30   I would love to a mirror universe [TS]

00:19:31   episode II house new show I would love [TS]

00:19:33   to see I would love to see this crew [TS]

00:19:35   somehow end up 150 years in the future [TS]

00:19:37   and be like the the USS Bozeman showed [TS]

00:19:41   up in TNG with with beardy mcfreak rain [TS]

00:19:45   captaining it [TS]

00:19:47   forward through time and having to deal [TS]

00:19:49   with having missed a ton of history and [TS]

00:19:51   be a crew out of time that's something [TS]

00:19:53   that they haven't really done with one [TS]

00:19:55   of these crews they've displaced them [TS]

00:19:57   you know a quadrant away in Voyager [TS]

00:19:59   they've put them on not a Federation [TS]

00:20:02   Starship Enterprise with you space 9 I [TS]

00:20:04   I'm with you in that I would I would [TS]

00:20:06   like something different and at the very [TS]

00:20:08   at the base level I feel like I'm [TS]

00:20:09   getting some of that and I would just I [TS]

00:20:11   want them to not feel like they've got [TS]

00:20:13   to hedge their bets and just let loose [TS]

00:20:15   and go nuts and maybe they might I mean [TS]

00:20:17   and we still don't know what if there's [TS]

00:20:19   a second season what that second season [TS]

00:20:21   will be since the pattern right now for [TS]

00:20:23   anthology series seems to be a full [TS]

00:20:25   season and then something new so it [TS]

00:20:27   might still do that we don't know but [TS]

00:20:30   yeah I think part of the reason we all [TS]

00:20:32   come back to the the same era is just [TS]

00:20:35   because when most people around the [TS]

00:20:36   world think Star Trek they think Kirk [TS]

00:20:38   Spock McCoy there's no there's no other [TS]

00:20:41   Star Trek those are other things they [TS]

00:20:43   might not even know them and and so it's [TS]

00:20:47   a calculated thing on the studio's part [TS]

00:20:49   I'm with you I want to see more I want [TS]

00:20:51   to see the future I want to see 20 years [TS]

00:20:54   after Voyager I want to see those people [TS]

00:20:56   who grew up in Starfleet you know [TS]

00:21:00   hearing about the stories of Janeway and [TS]

00:21:01   Cisco and all that I think it's fear on [TS]

00:21:04   the executive level in part I mean I [TS]

00:21:07   think Bryan Fuller had a thought he had [TS]

00:21:08   a good idea of something that sort of [TS]

00:21:10   calls back but I think the allure of the [TS]

00:21:12   Kirk Spock McCoy era is also buttress by [TS]

00:21:15   this fear that people think of Star Trek [TS]

00:21:18   and they think of that and that if they [TS]

00:21:19   make a show that is at the end of the [TS]

00:21:22   Canon as its established that they worry [TS]

00:21:26   like will it only appeal to people [TS]

00:21:28   who've seen all of the other shows will [TS]

00:21:30   it you know will they have to invent new [TS]

00:21:33   villains because if you keep the [TS]

00:21:35   Klingons as the villains and the [TS]

00:21:36   Romulans where you don't have to evolve [TS]

00:21:37   it at all although then you have to do [TS]

00:21:39   weird things to get things like the Borg [TS]

00:21:40   involved so I think it I think it's some [TS]

00:21:42   fear then again it is a little [TS]

00:21:44   surprising because maybe good idea from [TS]

00:21:47   Bryan Fuller here but like the lessons I [TS]

00:21:49   think this was a hard lesson of [TS]

00:21:50   enterprise that once you're in something [TS]

00:21:53   that's deep in the Canon and this isn't [TS]

00:21:54   set in the movie alternate universe this [TS]

00:21:57   is said in the prime television [TS]

00:21:59   basically to Moises [TS]

00:22:01   point cannon universe like well at that [TS]

00:22:03   point it's it's much harder to [TS]

00:22:05   contradict cannon and you have to do you [TS]

00:22:07   like no we can't show the Romulans faces [TS]

00:22:09   or we can't show the Borg unless we [TS]

00:22:11   cheat and even Enterprise tried to cheat [TS]

00:22:13   a little bit but it was really hard yeah [TS]

00:22:15   I think it's harder to make a show when [TS]

00:22:17   you've got this established cannon going [TS]

00:22:19   on so that III agree I think that it's [TS]

00:22:22   fear that is preventing them from going [TS]

00:22:23   further in the future and it's too bad [TS]

00:22:25   because I'd much rather see a next [TS]

00:22:27   next-generation then yeah then then sort [TS]

00:22:30   of retread over the same 20-year 30-year [TS]

00:22:33   period again and again but deep space 18 [TS]

00:22:36   this is where we are this is uh we do [TS]

00:22:39   get a view of this crew and there are [TS]

00:22:42   some interesting kind of character [TS]

00:22:44   design things here there's a guy with [TS]

00:22:45   like a thing wrapped around his head [TS]

00:22:47   there's another guy who's got like stuff [TS]

00:22:49   going up the side of his face and then [TS]

00:22:51   there's Doug Jones as a regular on the [TS]

00:22:55   show lieutenants aru who is the guy who [TS]

00:22:57   later will tell us as he sends his death [TS]

00:23:00   which people were laughing at that [TS]

00:23:02   dialogue it's like I I could tell you [TS]

00:23:03   what the context of that dialogue is [TS]

00:23:05   that it's not quite at this point but it [TS]

00:23:07   comes later which is you know his speed [TS]

00:23:09   he's gonna say his species evolved and [TS]

00:23:10   they were they were prey species and [TS]

00:23:12   they learned to have this ability to [TS]

00:23:15   sense you know when when they were going [TS]

00:23:17   to be attacked and I think that that's [TS]

00:23:19   you know it's creepy but I think that [TS]

00:23:21   there's probably a context that makes it [TS]

00:23:22   a little less silly that you don't get [TS]

00:23:24   in a trailer yeah it's a little goofy [TS]

00:23:26   yeah it's still it's still a little bit [TS]

00:23:28   theatrical a little bit silly I guess [TS]

00:23:30   but it's a science fiction universe [TS]

00:23:32   where matter can transport from one [TS]

00:23:33   place to another with a minimal of power [TS]

00:23:35   instead of weird you know weird and the [TS]

00:23:37   face design is kind of fun it's not just [TS]

00:23:39   a thing on his forehead which is kind of [TS]

00:23:42   cool right so this at this point the [TS]

00:23:44   trailer is were just sort of forwarding [TS]

00:23:46   they find an unknown object and Birnam [TS]

00:23:50   basically gets out in a spacesuit and [TS]

00:23:53   fires off her thrusters to go find this [TS]

00:23:56   unknown mysterious object that obviously [TS]

00:23:59   is the thing that sets off the plot of [TS]

00:24:01   this show yes this is I think this is a [TS]

00:24:04   very Star Trek II scene right there like [TS]

00:24:06   it's an unknown object and we can't just [TS]

00:24:08   leave it we have to go look at it [TS]

00:24:10   because that's what we do and then let's [TS]

00:24:12   hop into our motion picture [TS]

00:24:14   pack yeah and fly through the the cosmos [TS]

00:24:18   and get to this weird thing yeah there's [TS]

00:24:19   an asteroid belt over there and we are [TS]

00:24:21   gonna fly over to it we're not just [TS]

00:24:22   gonna scan it from a distance that's [TS]

00:24:24   lame yeah that's right [TS]

00:24:25   I need to touch it our scanners aren't [TS]

00:24:27   that good we have to do we have to send [TS]

00:24:28   somebody over we gotta go over there and [TS]

00:24:30   look at it write a report headed back to [TS]

00:24:33   Starfleet and it looks like it looks [TS]

00:24:35   like from the next scene that that [TS]

00:24:36   there's a there's a lot of interesting [TS]

00:24:37   stuff happening over there this it's [TS]

00:24:39   edited together with some other shots [TS]

00:24:41   that suggests that maybe there's a [TS]

00:24:43   there's Klingon involvement and maybe [TS]

00:24:46   alien involvement in that but it's a [TS]

00:24:47   it's a bunch of quick cuts and it's [TS]

00:24:49   unclear there's some kind of alien [TS]

00:24:50   ceremony that there's a quick cut of [TS]

00:24:52   that III was unclear if that was Klingon [TS]

00:24:54   or not it it looked ambiguous it's some [TS]

00:24:57   sort of a Klingon ceremony and as far as [TS]

00:24:59   I can tell the object that they find is [TS]

00:25:01   this sarcastic saying you know I read a [TS]

00:25:06   couple of articles and you know I try to [TS]

00:25:08   be as skeptical of what people write [TS]

00:25:10   about the stuff as possible because then [TS]

00:25:11   I find myself in my head Canon agreeing [TS]

00:25:13   with what somebody just puts forward as [TS]

00:25:15   a fact that may or may not be but it's [TS]

00:25:17   at least a close enough visual match [TS]

00:25:19   with the minimum amount of stuff that [TS]

00:25:20   they're showing us in this that that is [TS]

00:25:22   the thing that they find and I you know [TS]

00:25:25   I feel I feel like they're pretty [TS]

00:25:27   heavily hinting at yeah this is the [TS]

00:25:30   thing that works a bunch of Klingons [TS]

00:25:32   into into surrounding this one [TS]

00:25:35   Federation ship and it's a meaningful [TS]

00:25:37   object to this sarcophagus or whatever [TS]

00:25:39   it is is a meaningful Klingon object and [TS]

00:25:41   they want it and our crew finds it a [TS]

00:25:44   bunch of Klingon symbols appear on on [TS]

00:25:48   the the screen of the ship suggesting [TS]

00:25:50   that Klingons are attacking and and [TS]

00:25:52   that's scary and then we get a shot of a [TS]

00:25:56   guy whose name is Takuma which is Chris [TS]

00:26:01   Obi and he is he is the the Klingon with [TS]

00:26:05   the with the you know it's a very [TS]

00:26:07   different Klingon look so I guess we [TS]

00:26:09   should talk about the Klingons you know [TS]

00:26:10   one of the problems with Klingons is [TS]

00:26:12   that the original Klingons were like [TS]

00:26:14   let's get some guys with beards some [TS]

00:26:17   facial hair and that's what a Klingon [TS]

00:26:18   will be and then in next generation [TS]

00:26:20   they're like well we're going to do a [TS]

00:26:21   little more makeup and we're gonna have [TS]

00:26:22   a little bit more which was sort of [TS]

00:26:24   following on the motion picture the star [TS]

00:26:26   trek into darkness Klingons are [TS]

00:26:27   are also a little bit different and then [TS]

00:26:30   Enterprise tried to explain all of this [TS]

00:26:33   and say well there's the augments and [TS]

00:26:34   there's two versions and all that and [TS]

00:26:36   and it's this great thing that kind of [TS]

00:26:37   doesn't make any sense we do not speak [TS]

00:26:39   of it right the best thing that any Star [TS]

00:26:41   Trek ever did was have Worf just say no [TS]

00:26:44   don't don't even here here's the thing [TS]

00:26:46   is I feel like this show maybe is going [TS]

00:26:48   to speak of it here's the thing I hope [TS]

00:26:51   not either they're gonna speak of it or [TS]

00:26:52   they're gonna lean in and on this what [TS]

00:26:54   I'm hoping is they're gonna lean into [TS]

00:26:55   the idea that you know what every time [TS]

00:26:57   we show the Klingons they look different [TS]

00:26:58   it's because it's a different show and [TS]

00:27:00   the makeup is different and these are [TS]

00:27:02   better in designing these things and [TS]

00:27:05   like just you got to go with it just [TS]

00:27:06   like why do why aren't we wearing the [TS]

00:27:08   pajamas from the original series because [TS]

00:27:10   it's a different show and you just have [TS]

00:27:12   to go with it it's not a photographic [TS]

00:27:14   representation of what really happened [TS]

00:27:15   because it's a TV show [TS]

00:27:17   why does the interior of the TARDIS look [TS]

00:27:19   different with each dot yeah so I'm kind [TS]

00:27:20   of going with that which is like [TS]

00:27:22   historical records from this era or [TS]

00:27:23   sketchy you know how do you solve how do [TS]

00:27:26   you solve the problem of like are they [TS]

00:27:27   guys with beards or are they people with [TS]

00:27:29   bumpy heads and the answers we're gonna [TS]

00:27:30   make totally new ones and then you're [TS]

00:27:31   really not gonna know what the Klingons [TS]

00:27:33   are but yeah moisés it is also true [TS]

00:27:35   they may try to explain that I kind of [TS]

00:27:37   want them to not but maybe they will [TS]

00:27:38   well here's the thing is I I see them [TS]

00:27:41   being able to go almost a half measure [TS]

00:27:43   and and speak to the divide in in in the [TS]

00:27:46   Klingon homeworld between the the people [TS]

00:27:49   who look like Takuma and the people who [TS]

00:27:52   look like the the racial appropriation [TS]

00:27:56   half fu-manchu's half Russian Jung ons [TS]

00:27:59   of the original shows the ones like you [TS]

00:28:02   know the Romulans and Riemann's sorry to [TS]

00:28:05   bring back memories of Nemesis I didn't [TS]

00:28:08   think we're gonna talk about that when [TS]

00:28:09   no yeah that's really uncalled for [TS]

00:28:12   really unfamiliar with this trip my [TS]

00:28:14   tests show me on the on the Nemesis DVD [TS]

00:28:17   where it hurt you yes okay the whole DVD [TS]

00:28:19   hurt me that's where but there yeah I [TS]

00:28:22   mean there's you know again because [TS]

00:28:23   they're going with the TV the TV Canon [TS]

00:28:26   of things and the deep Canon of all [TS]

00:28:28   kinds of stuff the untold story in the [TS]

00:28:31   past of Star Trek lore that does [TS]

00:28:33   interest me that yes okay we got a [TS]

00:28:35   billion Klingon episodes in Deep Space [TS]

00:28:36   nine and there are people who hate them [TS]

00:28:38   I love them you know there is there is [TS]

00:28:40   something [TS]

00:28:41   to be explored in looking at at this [TS]

00:28:45   relatively early stage of the Federation [TS]

00:28:47   dealing with Klingons in in a way that [TS]

00:28:51   establishes a way to move forward with [TS]

00:28:53   them where they don't necessarily have [TS]

00:28:55   to look one way or another way or they [TS]

00:28:58   can look half way between or you know [TS]

00:29:01   you can you can keep as much or use as [TS]

00:29:04   much or throw out as much of the [TS]

00:29:07   production design as you want as [TS]

00:29:10   behooves you to make something look good [TS]

00:29:12   on high-def 4k TV screens in the year [TS]

00:29:14   2017 as opposed to what looked totally [TS]

00:29:18   fine on a CRT in 1968 what I have seen [TS]

00:29:21   makes me trust whichever direction they [TS]

00:29:23   go whether they give in to the stuff [TS]

00:29:25   that I'm kind of okay with them doing [TS]

00:29:27   like the deep the deep lore like you [TS]

00:29:30   know not to say this is the only way to [TS]

00:29:32   describe the kind of schism but like the [TS]

00:29:34   difference between Sunni and Shia [TS]

00:29:35   Muslims that kind of major major [TS]

00:29:39   conflict within a specific culture that [TS]

00:29:41   is something that I think is a [TS]

00:29:43   fascinating thing to explore in a Star [TS]

00:29:45   Trek show and it's something that as [TS]

00:29:48   much as Star Trek lore has been steeped [TS]

00:29:50   in bringing a new perspective to [TS]

00:29:53   cultures and cultural divisions and [TS]

00:29:57   political strife that not everybody has [TS]

00:30:00   the same perspective on I think there [TS]

00:30:02   there could be something really [TS]

00:30:03   fascinating to that where it is less cut [TS]

00:30:05   and dry I so [TS]

00:30:07   I hear where you're coming from on that [TS]

00:30:09   this is this is what concerns me and [TS]

00:30:11   Jason was talking to you about this in [TS]

00:30:13   slack the other day like you know so [TS]

00:30:16   many Star Trek's they they kind of come [TS]

00:30:18   off with a premise that you can explain [TS]

00:30:21   this and write like TOS is a five year [TS]

00:30:24   mission [TS]

00:30:25   you know DSM's Space Station Voyager [TS]

00:30:28   they're trapped you know a long way from [TS]

00:30:31   home for this it it I don't see any [TS]

00:30:36   concept around the show that makes me go [TS]

00:30:38   that really pulls me in like I feel like [TS]

00:30:41   the the Klingons and humans and the [TS]

00:30:44   relations that they had around this era [TS]

00:30:46   has been so hyper explored that I don't [TS]

00:30:50   like they can add a new subspecies it's [TS]

00:30:53   going on or [TS]

00:30:54   secret treaty which is why you know the [TS]

00:30:57   the ship looks half Klingon they can do [TS]

00:30:59   that that doesn't innately like draw me [TS]

00:31:02   into it and maybe this ends up being the [TS]

00:31:05   kind of show that's more character based [TS]

00:31:07   like homeland or billions like these are [TS]

00:31:10   shows that really aren't built off a [TS]

00:31:12   premise they are built around characters [TS]

00:31:15   and maybe you know this show will have [TS]

00:31:17   the kind of acting and actors that can [TS]

00:31:19   pull that off but I I just have to say [TS]

00:31:22   that the everything I'm seeing around [TS]

00:31:25   the show doesn't make me go oh cool [TS]

00:31:28   that's a premise I want to watch it's [TS]

00:31:30   just the Star Trek name that I feel like [TS]

00:31:33   cashing in on is this this trailer is [TS]

00:31:35   very much like Star Trek remember Star [TS]

00:31:37   Trek let's show you all these things [TS]

00:31:38   about Star Trek yeah like I feel like [TS]

00:31:40   it's missing because I mean my [TS]

00:31:41   assumption is that the premise for the [TS]

00:31:44   show is Birnam gets basically thrust [TS]

00:31:47   into a command position and has to [TS]

00:31:49   struggle with that and and challenges [TS]

00:31:51   are overcome but we don't we don't get [TS]

00:31:53   that in that trailer right [TS]

00:31:54   the trailer is Star Trek they're kind of [TS]

00:31:56   hiding the premise for now it seems yeah [TS]

00:31:58   which which yeah I think I I think there [TS]

00:32:01   will be one although I think any [TS]

00:32:02   expectations there is going to be the [TS]

00:32:04   show to have a premise yeah yeah the [TS]

00:32:07   premise is Star Trek yeah that's right [TS]

00:32:09   there you go to space that's the alien [TS]

00:32:11   that's that's oh yeah no I think but I I [TS]

00:32:15   do think that Star Trek that's why I'm [TS]

00:32:17   fascinated by the idea of the show is [TS]

00:32:19   Star Trek in 2017 and modern television [TS]

00:32:21   it's going to be different it is going [TS]

00:32:23   to be character driven it's going to be [TS]

00:32:24   a big story arc it's going to not be [TS]

00:32:25   episodes of the you know week where [TS]

00:32:28   there's an adventure and then it's over [TS]

00:32:29   and we move on to the next adventure [TS]

00:32:30   it's going to be a very different beast [TS]

00:32:33   than any Star Trek we've seen before [TS]

00:32:35   I think Eve it is not going to be an [TS]

00:32:36   episode where Doug Jones teaches Birnam [TS]

00:32:38   had it like jazz tap or something like [TS]

00:32:40   that no I mean ever since this is how we [TS]

00:32:43   apply decontamination gel on my planet [TS]

00:32:45   anything's possible but but I think I [TS]

00:32:49   also do think that there this is my [TS]

00:32:51   suspicion throughout this and the fact [TS]

00:32:53   that we don't see the discovery in this [TS]

00:32:54   and all it's like yeah they're trying to [TS]

00:32:55   keep quiet on what I think they're going [TS]

00:32:59   to do which is the classic TV fake-out [TS]

00:33:02   where they show you characters that you [TS]

00:33:04   think you're going to be seeing for the [TS]

00:33:05   rest of the show and then very rapidly [TS]

00:33:07   they are either left behind or killed [TS]

00:33:10   and I suspect that's going to happen [TS]

00:33:12   there are a lot of actors that have been [TS]

00:33:14   named as being on this show I have my [TS]

00:33:17   doubts that all of them are going to [TS]

00:33:18   make it through but they're keeping them [TS]

00:33:21   on that right now because because that's [TS]

00:33:22   an expensive cast for a streaming show I [TS]

00:33:24   feel like what they were trying to do [TS]

00:33:26   with this specific trailer was make [TS]

00:33:28   people go hey guess what Star Trek looks [TS]

00:33:30   really friggin expensive by the way [TS]

00:33:32   looks expensive [TS]

00:33:33   also the lens flares were brought in [TS]

00:33:34   spared no expense we bought them in bulk [TS]

00:33:37   the next shot here is uh is interesting [TS]

00:33:41   it's Eric again but what we get is the [TS]

00:33:43   suggestion that Birnam actually has a [TS]

00:33:46   long-standing connection to Sarah and [TS]

00:33:48   Vulcan that she seems to have grown up [TS]

00:33:50   at least in part on Vulcan shit there's [TS]

00:33:52   a little girl who looks like her with a [TS]

00:33:53   Vulcan haircut yeah but she can't speak [TS]

00:33:55   Vulcan right because she has a stupid [TS]

00:33:56   human tongue and can't do it so the this [TS]

00:33:58   this line posed a lot of questions for [TS]

00:34:01   me because so I mean for example do we [TS]

00:34:03   know that Birnam is human she looks very [TS]

00:34:06   he was around ears but well jason is you [TS]

00:34:09   know I mean she could be half-human yeah [TS]

00:34:11   I got a quarter or something else she's [TS]

00:34:14   a secret Vulcan aging the entire time it [TS]

00:34:16   seems unlikely to me because she's got [TS]

00:34:19   tears welling up and all of that but you [TS]

00:34:21   know you never you never know I think [TS]

00:34:22   she's a human her top half as human her [TS]

00:34:25   bottom half is locusts like I'm like a [TS]

00:34:27   merman yes although oddly enough now I [TS]

00:34:29   want to see a show just called Star Trek [TS]

00:34:31   secret Vulcan so I think totally watch I [TS]

00:34:34   think I'm intrigued by the premise we've [TS]

00:34:36   had all this stuff about Spock being [TS]

00:34:38   like Howard dealing with his human half [TS]

00:34:39   and and and this is more like Spock's [TS]

00:34:42   mom this is a was it being a human [TS]

00:34:45   growing up on Vulcan [TS]

00:34:46   it sounds like it kind of sucks from [TS]

00:34:48   this yes let's not look great well it [TS]

00:34:51   seems like being a Vulcan growing up on [TS]

00:34:53   Vulcan kind of sucks so yeah they should [TS]

00:34:55   fix that [TS]

00:34:55   it's a choice so that's intriguing that [TS]

00:34:58   what we get out of this is that this is [TS]

00:35:00   not a drive-by necessarily performance [TS]

00:35:03   with CEREC but that actually Birnam has [TS]

00:35:05   a direct connection with CEREC which is [TS]

00:35:08   kind of it I think in that in that shot [TS]

00:35:09   he's like a hologram right so I don't [TS]

00:35:11   know if that she's watching a past [TS]

00:35:13   message that she always goes back or [TS]

00:35:14   like you know he's just calling her all [TS]

00:35:17   the time that he's not a hologram in [TS]

00:35:18   that there's there's also show where [TS]

00:35:19   he's not [TS]

00:35:20   Grammy's but that may be a flashback [TS]

00:35:22   that flashback of when when she was [TS]

00:35:24   living with the small girl yeah I think [TS]

00:35:26   it's totally a flashback yep she doesn't [TS]

00:35:28   turn into a small girl no a well and [TS]

00:35:30   cook time travel it is Star Trek well [TS]

00:35:32   it's true anything is possible [TS]

00:35:33   they she gets turned to a small group or [TS]

00:35:35   small girl along with three other crew [TS]

00:35:36   members they're stuck in a turbo lift [TS]

00:35:37   for an episode it's yeah can't wait [TS]

00:35:39   Sarek is there so we get a bunch of we [TS]

00:35:42   get a bunch of quick flashes of the ship [TS]

00:35:44   is in the shadow is in jeopardy uh [TS]

00:35:47   the Klingons do a lot of shouting we got [TS]

00:35:51   they do they all like to look up and go [TS]

00:35:53   wrong like they do like Klingons do well [TS]

00:35:56   to be fair that's what they always do [TS]

00:35:57   yeah Burnham uh says we need to we need [TS]

00:36:00   to attack them [TS]

00:36:01   and Michelle Yeoh says we do not fire [TS]

00:36:03   Starfleet doesn't fire first just like [TS]

00:36:05   we got to do this we gotta take them [TS]

00:36:07   that's a pretty good line um yeah I mean [TS]

00:36:10   I kind of questioned it as a strategy [TS]

00:36:12   but like that's that's an ethos it's [TS]

00:36:14   very Picardie with a good guys we don't [TS]

00:36:16   fire first it's all defensive our [TS]

00:36:17   weapons are for defense we're an [TS]

00:36:19   exploration ship right that's very Star [TS]

00:36:20   Trek yeah but that's how your ship gets [TS]

00:36:22   blown up and yeah that's how you die in [TS]

00:36:24   episode 1 and then episode discovery so [TS]

00:36:27   that's true I think I'm pretty sure all [TS]

00:36:29   the Starfleet officers we see in this [TS]

00:36:30   trailer almost all of them are going to [TS]

00:36:32   be dead by the end of the first steps [TS]

00:36:33   except for maybe Doug Jones yeah some of [TS]

00:36:35   them could be in Klingon work camps have [TS]

00:36:37   a little strip repented I'll come back [TS]

00:36:39   yeah good if you're that one of the [TS]

00:36:42   things that happens is a bunch of [TS]

00:36:44   prisoners of war taken and somehow [TS]

00:36:47   they've got to be rescued or or you know [TS]

00:36:50   satisfy the Klingons forced to sit [TS]

00:36:52   through a Klingon biology class where [TS]

00:36:54   they explain the differences of the [TS]

00:36:56   various excellent actually it's done out [TS]

00:36:59   for lunch today we will have gone well [TS]

00:37:00   we have that we have that shot of [TS]

00:37:03   Michelle Yeoh it looks like from behind [TS]

00:37:04   looking at the view screen and it's like [TS]

00:37:06   white like fleN it's like oh that that [TS]

00:37:08   doesn't look good and then they [TS]

00:37:10   immediately could they cut to black and [TS]

00:37:11   then they fade up on John Doug Jones's [TS]

00:37:14   character saying you know my race [TS]

00:37:16   evolved to sense death and I sent it now [TS]

00:37:19   which I you know what I like I really [TS]

00:37:22   like it cuz it's super creepy I think [TS]

00:37:24   that's going to like what did they do [TS]

00:37:26   like get a species of people invite them [TS]

00:37:29   into the Federation to be like [TS]

00:37:31   essentially Canaries in a coal [TS]

00:37:34   and like Harsha presents an idea you [TS]

00:37:37   hope that they have other skills [TS]

00:37:39   it's very Star Trek but like I said I [TS]

00:37:41   think it's gonna be like we're a prey [TS]

00:37:43   species yeah we know when this kind of [TS]

00:37:45   stuff is happening and not not as a we [TS]

00:37:46   were brought in to Starfleet for this [TS]

00:37:48   but more like we gotta get out of here [TS]

00:37:50   way to go Jonas you hope that it's just [TS]

00:37:53   a biological feature they have it not [TS]

00:37:54   like that their entire culture is based [TS]

00:37:56   around that like really you guys don't [TS]

00:37:59   have like one guy that builds spaceships [TS]

00:38:00   how did we let you into the Federation [TS]

00:38:01   knowing meerkats it's just a whole race [TS]

00:38:03   of meerkat people they pop up they look [TS]

00:38:05   for death and I pop back down Admiral my [TS]

00:38:07   death sensing officer has something to [TS]

00:38:09   add one moment please [TS]

00:38:10   I guess I guess maybe the qualifications [TS]

00:38:13   to get into the Federation were [TS]

00:38:14   different back then there'll only know [TS]

00:38:18   like seven aliens so like I have them [TS]

00:38:19   get in yeah and this this show is about [TS]

00:38:22   the reason why they had to tighten that [TS]

00:38:24   up [TS]

00:38:24   yes wooly it's could be the reason why [TS]

00:38:26   we never see them again later yes right [TS]

00:38:28   a premise it's guys know episodes about [TS]

00:38:30   people getting evicted for the [TS]

00:38:31   Federation right yet I always assumed [TS]

00:38:35   that there there are lots of planets [TS]

00:38:37   very low populations and so they're [TS]

00:38:39   happy to be in the Federation but they [TS]

00:38:40   don't send a lot of people out there [TS]

00:38:41   just be there's only a few thousand [TS]

00:38:43   years and they just yeah I mean there's [TS]

00:38:44   got to be people who are in the [TS]

00:38:45   Federation they don't like they don't [TS]

00:38:46   have anyone in Starfleet earning right [TS]

00:38:48   they're just in the Federation like for [TS]

00:38:50   paper tax purpose yeah that's right they [TS]

00:38:52   just got a little an eye on what we send [TS]

00:38:54   you nobody to be officers and we just [TS]

00:38:56   let you mine all the ore that you want [TS]

00:38:58   just don't destroy our biosphere we want [TS]

00:39:00   replicators in holodeck so that we never [TS]

00:39:01   have to prepare our own food or work [TS]

00:39:04   jobs again oh and what could go wrong so [TS]

00:39:06   the last shot of the trailer is back out [TS]

00:39:09   in space and burn them in this her [TS]

00:39:11   spacesuit and and there's like I guess [TS]

00:39:14   Klingon in a space suit with a big bat [TS]

00:39:18   left kind of thingy it looks like a bat [TS]

00:39:20   left if you show it if you slow it down [TS]

00:39:21   it looks definitely looks like a sword [TS]

00:39:23   of Kahless a bat'leth I agree yeah and [TS]

00:39:26   and he swings it at her and that's the [TS]

00:39:29   end of the trailer that's all we get to [TS]

00:39:30   see ninja dies at the end how much you [TS]

00:39:34   want to bet the cliffhanger is her out [TS]

00:39:35   in space in the suit and the ship is [TS]

00:39:37   destroyed Oh interesting [TS]

00:39:39   and the discovery funds er I like that [TS]

00:39:42   we have to parse parse this out that [TS]

00:39:45   that they have been now it may [TS]

00:39:47   that they've been squirrely about the [TS]

00:39:49   premise of the show in a lot of ways [TS]

00:39:50   because they've been figuring it out [TS]

00:39:52   because there's been so much turmoil [TS]

00:39:53   behind the scenes that maybe but I do [TS]

00:39:56   like the fact that we we don't really [TS]

00:39:58   have a great sense of what this of what [TS]

00:40:02   happens in the first episode [TS]

00:40:04   beyond this confrontation that that she [TS]

00:40:07   has out in his spacesuit and what might [TS]

00:40:09   be happening back on the ship [TS]

00:40:10   I love that I love the notion of her [TS]

00:40:12   maybe being demoted or somehow you know [TS]

00:40:15   somehow stigmatized for screwing [TS]

00:40:18   something up you know we get an [TS]

00:40:19   indication of her wanting to be [TS]

00:40:20   impulsive and her captain thinking [TS]

00:40:23   better and you know I I just love the [TS]

00:40:26   idea of lucius malfoy as captain of a [TS]

00:40:28   starship you know giving her you've done [TS]

00:40:30   quite enough Glee I think everything we [TS]

00:40:32   know about Starfleet in that era would [TS]

00:40:34   reward that kind of behavior yeah yeah [TS]

00:40:37   like you did something ruthless and [TS]

00:40:38   brash here's your own starship please [TS]

00:40:40   enjoy [TS]

00:40:41   it's there's Klingons and aliens and [TS]

00:40:43   action and lens flares and a lot of [TS]

00:40:47   viral effects yeah I like it so yeah so [TS]

00:40:50   I mean there are a lot of people out [TS]

00:40:52   there breed mentioned earlier what [TS]

00:40:53   people are freaking out about this when [TS]

00:40:54   we go it looks so terrible I honestly I [TS]

00:40:56   don't get where that's coming from I [TS]

00:40:58   think it looks really good in fact my [TS]

00:40:59   worry about it is it looks so good that [TS]

00:41:01   they're over selling it and there's no [TS]

00:41:03   way it's going to look this good on a [TS]

00:41:04   week-by-week basis that they won't have [TS]

00:41:06   the budget for it I don't understand why [TS]

00:41:08   people are freaking out about this like [TS]

00:41:10   it looks I mean I'm not sold on it yet [TS]

00:41:13   I'm excited for this it it seems like [TS]

00:41:16   the building blocks are there but I [TS]

00:41:18   think I think the more interesting [TS]

00:41:19   questions are how are they going to like [TS]

00:41:23   bring this to be a show in 2017 because [TS]

00:41:27   something they're saying earlier about [TS]

00:41:28   yeah the the the short script and the [TS]

00:41:32   adventure of the week not working [TS]

00:41:33   anymore [TS]

00:41:34   I I can't help but think that we're [TS]

00:41:37   going to lose part of Star Trek if it's [TS]

00:41:39   not that you know we have a Star Trek [TS]

00:41:42   main franchise right now that is [TS]

00:41:45   essentially action movies in space and I [TS]

00:41:48   I don't think that I think they really [TS]

00:41:51   missed the entire point the series I [TS]

00:41:53   have liked every sequel less and less so [TS]

00:41:56   I want to I want to see something where [TS]

00:42:00   there [TS]

00:42:01   really wrestling with these deep [TS]

00:42:03   philosophical questions about what it [TS]

00:42:06   means to be human like where our better [TS]

00:42:08   nature is you know what is what our [TS]

00:42:11   epics in war like Star Trek really [TS]

00:42:13   helped shape my thinking and my politics [TS]

00:42:16   on that and I think we need a show that [TS]

00:42:19   can do that very bravely and what I'm so [TS]

00:42:22   worried about here is you know I feel [TS]

00:42:24   like I feel like Enterprise in Voyager [TS]

00:42:28   or two series that never got a fair [TS]

00:42:30   shake by the audience because I think [TS]

00:42:32   the half fans the fans at just like half [TS]

00:42:35   of it and they're just variant ly [TS]

00:42:37   against the rest of it [TS]

00:42:38   I really wonder worried that they're [TS]

00:42:40   going to come into this and they're not [TS]

00:42:42   going to give it a fair shot [TS]

00:42:43   particularly because it looks like it's [TS]

00:42:45   going to start to women into women of [TS]

00:42:48   color and I just really wonder if the [TS]

00:42:50   audience is going to hold them to [TS]

00:42:53   unconscious double standards I'll tell [TS]

00:42:55   you something based on my experience [TS]

00:42:56   actually with Doctor Who coming back in [TS]

00:42:58   2005 which is I think the best thing to [TS]

00:43:02   do is to not care what the Star Trek [TS]

00:43:04   fans think because for the future of the [TS]

00:43:07   franchise and the success of this show I [TS]

00:43:10   think they need to appeal to a new [TS]

00:43:12   generation of fans who will be super [TS]

00:43:14   into this people who grew up watching [TS]

00:43:16   Star Trek on Netflix not watching it [TS]

00:43:18   when it aired they're going to be a lot [TS]

00:43:20   younger if there's anything like the [TS]

00:43:22   Doctor Who audience it's going to be a [TS]

00:43:23   lot younger and it's going to be a lot [TS]

00:43:25   more gender-balanced [TS]

00:43:26   than the old fandom was and I think that [TS]

00:43:30   that that the existing fans will come [TS]

00:43:32   along because it's Star Trek to a [TS]

00:43:33   certain degree and give it a shot but [TS]

00:43:36   that they got to expand beyond that and [TS]

00:43:38   this is actually one of the reasons why [TS]

00:43:40   I'm a little frustrated that in the u.s. [TS]

00:43:41   it's going to be on CBS all access [TS]

00:43:43   because it seems to me like that she [TS]

00:43:46   should be on CBS it should just be on [TS]

00:43:48   the network yeah because what they're [TS]

00:43:49   saying is it's really for the Trekkies [TS]

00:43:51   and they'll pay for it and that's gonna [TS]

00:43:53   that's going to limit their ability to [TS]

00:43:55   reach that new audience at least at the [TS]

00:43:57   beginning everywhere else in the world [TS]

00:43:57   it'll be on Netflix and I think it'll be [TS]

00:43:59   a hit but in the u.s. will people see it [TS]

00:44:01   I don't see there being harm in giving [TS]

00:44:03   people who subscribe to all access like [TS]

00:44:06   a week advance access to it and then [TS]

00:44:08   playing that episode a week later on the [TS]

00:44:11   network you could window it that way and [TS]

00:44:13   achieve the same [TS]

00:44:15   kind of thing the people who really want [TS]

00:44:16   it want it now and want to pay for it [TS]

00:44:18   are going to pay for it piracy is [TS]

00:44:20   something that if if you think out just [TS]

00:44:22   putting it on all access is going to [TS]

00:44:23   prevent people from pirating it guess [TS]

00:44:24   what and I you know Jason it sounds to [TS]

00:44:26   me like you're saying that a next [TS]

00:44:28   generation of fans could be born out of [TS]

00:44:30   this oh it's a tough one because I also [TS]

00:44:33   get that they're trying to kind of go [TS]

00:44:34   back to something that's familiar to [TS]

00:44:36   people in this in the in the kind of [TS]

00:44:38   Kirk Spock McCoy era but it's not that [TS]

00:44:40   same ground I don't know it's a tough [TS]

00:44:42   one right how do you bring back a [TS]

00:44:43   franchise that I point to Doctor Who [TS]

00:44:45   only because that is an example of a [TS]

00:44:46   completely dead franchise that they [TS]

00:44:48   brought back to life with a revitalized [TS]

00:44:51   fan base and they did it in continuity [TS]

00:44:55   without replaying you're saying no it's [TS]

00:44:58   we're going to start from scratch and [TS]

00:44:59   they managed to make it work so I have [TS]

00:45:01   some hope and they botched that launch [TS]

00:45:03   in the US and it's still managed to make [TS]

00:45:05   it after a few years so it's it's I have [TS]

00:45:08   some hope there that that the a lot of [TS]

00:45:11   the classic Trek fans will come along [TS]

00:45:12   but that there will be a new generation [TS]

00:45:14   of fans will be drawn into this and I [TS]

00:45:15   have actually a lot of hope Bri for what [TS]

00:45:17   you said about what Star Trek is that it [TS]

00:45:20   may be maybe summer tentpole action [TS]

00:45:22   movies in general can't do which is the [TS]

00:45:24   classic social commentary and character [TS]

00:45:27   interaction I feel like long-form [TS]

00:45:29   television is a place where you can you [TS]

00:45:31   have the leisure to do that in a way [TS]

00:45:34   that you can't in a movie and that you [TS]

00:45:36   kind of can't in a classic TV series [TS]

00:45:38   that resets every week you can do a [TS]

00:45:39   little a little parable and then you [TS]

00:45:41   have to move on so I guess that puts our [TS]

00:45:43   hope in Bryan Fuller who came up with [TS]

00:45:45   the story arc that the story arc he's [TS]

00:45:47   chosen is something that allows them to [TS]

00:45:49   explore the characters and explore [TS]

00:45:51   social issues and be Star Trek I think [TS]

00:45:54   if they haven't messed with it too much [TS]

00:45:56   since he left [TS]

00:45:57   I feel like Bryan Fuller gets that that [TS]

00:45:58   is what Star Trek is and I'm looking [TS]

00:46:01   forward to them having the the ability [TS]

00:46:03   to stretch that story out over 15 hours [TS]

00:46:05   instead of having these hour-long cycles [TS]

00:46:08   or a two and a half hour long movie and [TS]

00:46:09   then they have to get out of town where [TS]

00:46:11   there's no way to do I feel like the the [TS]

00:46:13   divorce the divorce between the TV [TS]

00:46:15   franchise and the movie franchise is [TS]

00:46:16   something that again makes me more [TS]

00:46:18   optimistic for this TV series because [TS]

00:46:20   you have Nicholas Meyer working on it [TS]

00:46:22   you have the movies having doubled and [TS]

00:46:25   tripled down on [TS]

00:46:26   action bang bang bang flash and look [TS]

00:46:28   here sexy people taking off the clothes [TS]

00:46:29   and here more sexy people taking off [TS]

00:46:31   their clothes and guess what we've got [TS]

00:46:32   new sexy people to take off their [TS]

00:46:34   clothes in the next movie and ride [TS]

00:46:35   motorbikes I enjoy the new movies [TS]

00:46:37   they're fine but I don't think that [TS]

00:46:39   they're trying to do that specifically [TS]

00:46:42   just you know from what we've seen and [TS]

00:46:44   from what we can extrapolate from what [TS]

00:46:48   we know about who they've cast what [TS]

00:46:50   they've put into it the fact that there [TS]

00:46:52   are a bunch of people saying that the [TS]

00:46:54   you know this trailer wasn't white or [TS]

00:46:55   male enough gentlemen I would like to [TS]

00:46:59   direct you to literally olive starch I [TS]

00:47:01   think you've not been watching a show [TS]

00:47:03   called Star Trek mm-hmm is all a Star [TS]

00:47:06   Trek still available to those people [TS]

00:47:08   they have hope that it hasn't [TS]

00:47:09   disappeared so I know it's gone it's [TS]

00:47:11   done they deleted it I mean the thing [TS]

00:47:13   that that excites me about the writing [TS]

00:47:15   staff is not just Nick Meyer but the the [TS]

00:47:18   people who stayed behind after Brian [TS]

00:47:20   Foley left have worked with fuller for [TS]

00:47:22   years so I don't think they're gonna [TS]

00:47:24   deviate too far from where he was going [TS]

00:47:28   with it and and they have Crick visit [TS]

00:47:31   Kristen or Kirsten Bayer who wrote [TS]

00:47:35   several Voyager novels which are [TS]

00:47:36   actually very good they're very good [TS]

00:47:39   yeah yeah and she's on staff so so I'm [TS]

00:47:42   I'm kind of trust in the writing staff [TS]

00:47:44   and the story arc thing it's just like [TS]

00:47:46   modern modern TV storytelling I'm really [TS]

00:47:48   excited about that I mean Star Trek put [TS]

00:47:49   a tan in that with some of the arcs that [TS]

00:47:51   they had in in Deep Space Nine and [TS]

00:47:54   Enterprise and maybe a little bit [TS]

00:47:56   Voyager but here it's going to be you [TS]

00:47:59   know full-on 2017 TV series it's going [TS]

00:48:01   to be interesting to see how how that [TS]

00:48:03   plays out but I am hopeful that we're [TS]

00:48:05   going to get those moments also for the [TS]

00:48:07   fact that the trailer is high production [TS]

00:48:08   value and has lots of action in it you [TS]

00:48:10   know it's a trailer - that's right [TS]

00:48:12   they're not going to they start with a [TS]

00:48:14   quiet introspective moment and then they [TS]

00:48:16   have lots of explosions in action [TS]

00:48:17   because they do want to get people [TS]

00:48:19   excited but III imagine we'll have those [TS]

00:48:22   moments I don't think we've seen a third [TS]

00:48:24   of the named actors that have you know [TS]

00:48:26   had their names out in a variety and [TS]

00:48:28   deadlines press releases of so-and-so [TS]

00:48:30   has been cast in circle whole crew of [TS]

00:48:32   the USS discovery is not in this trailer [TS]

00:48:34   right and that includes several named [TS]

00:48:37   actors that we are just not seeing [TS]

00:48:39   oh the Klingon guy among multiple [TS]

00:48:42   Klingon guys yeah yeah well it's like [TS]

00:48:44   you know thinking about that next [TS]

00:48:46   generation of fans my boys watch the [TS]

00:48:49   trailer and I mean yes they have been [TS]

00:48:52   inducted into Star Trek just by osmosis [TS]

00:48:55   because it's just on in our house but [TS]

00:48:57   but they're watching it going that looks [TS]

00:48:59   kind of interesting what's going on [TS]

00:49:01   I said let's watch it again I don't know [TS]

00:49:03   and we watched it you know four or five [TS]

00:49:05   times and and they really want to know [TS]

00:49:08   what's going on they want to know why we [TS]

00:49:10   haven't seen the discovery and why we [TS]

00:49:12   don't know what's going on they said [TS]

00:49:14   what's it about that's exactly that but [TS]

00:49:16   they weren't they weren't disturbed by [TS]

00:49:18   the lack of a premise they just wanted [TS]

00:49:20   to get to the premise it's like well [TS]

00:49:21   tell me more so I was just kind of like [TS]

00:49:24   okay they seem not to be ready to tell [TS]

00:49:26   her that that tell tell us more which is [TS]

00:49:28   probably again just speculating here but [TS]

00:49:30   it's probably that something bad happens [TS]

00:49:32   to that shape and that she is she is put [TS]

00:49:36   on a different ship and has to deal with [TS]

00:49:39   what happens so it starts out with them [TS]

00:49:42   talking and saying well you're my first [TS]

00:49:43   officer and you you really need a [TS]

00:49:45   command you need to move up now and we [TS]

00:49:47   know that she is not moving up right [TS]

00:49:51   she's not the captain so no something [TS]

00:49:53   has to keep her at that level right [TS]

00:49:55   maybe she just likes it interesting yes [TS]

00:49:57   is the Riker [TS]

00:49:58   it's a Riker fan she's a right now she [TS]

00:50:00   should do the Riker River before Riker [TS]

00:50:01   was even born [TS]

00:50:02   did this trailer make people uh excited [TS]

00:50:05   about new Star Trek to come yeah yeah [TS]

00:50:08   definitely [TS]

00:50:09   I watched on my phone and that's not [TS]

00:50:12   really the place to watch it so I was [TS]

00:50:14   kind of like well alright but then I put [TS]

00:50:16   it up on the on the Apple TV on the big [TS]

00:50:18   screen and and yeah I was I was ready [TS]

00:50:21   yeah I wanted more [TS]

00:50:22   I am ready I'm excited I am I'm in it [TS]

00:50:27   feels like Star Trek to me I am fine [TS]

00:50:31   with people not liking it that's fine I [TS]

00:50:33   am NOT fine with people saying it's not [TS]

00:50:35   real Star Trek which just means it's not [TS]

00:50:37   the Star Trek I like which is fine it's [TS]

00:50:41   not real Star Trek says people who have [TS]

00:50:42   not seen the Star Trek yet [TS]

00:50:44   in Doctor Who fandom by the way that [TS]

00:50:47   phrase is it's not proper Doctor Who and [TS]

00:50:49   those people will exist for this too and [TS]

00:50:51   they're dumb people of course you didn't [TS]

00:50:53   like it as I like but it's dark magics I [TS]

00:50:55   fully expect a lot of hardcore Star Trek [TS]

00:50:59   fans to watch the show I'd just hate it [TS]

00:51:01   because there's no Captain Picard [TS]

00:51:03   they're not wearing colorful Captain [TS]

00:51:06   Kirk shirts even though that's stupid [TS]

00:51:08   whatevs [TS]

00:51:09   why doesn't why why aren't the sets made [TS]

00:51:11   of cardboard pepper knobs on the inner [TS]

00:51:13   this is ten years before the my [TS]

00:51:15   enterprise and it's too advanced and [TS]

00:51:18   guess what that's dumb and you're dumb [TS]

00:51:20   for thinking it I I will say I'm not [TS]

00:51:23   crazy about the title font but it's much [TS]

00:51:26   better than the next generation it's [TS]

00:51:28   grown on me fine David [TS]

00:51:30   I've got a theme song to talk to you [TS]

00:51:31   about oh yeah well we don't know that [TS]

00:51:34   like what's the theme song gonna be I [TS]

00:51:35   guess we're gonna have to find out [TS]

00:51:36   anything new I hope it's a remix of the [TS]

00:51:38   Enterprise theme so no I hope it don't [TS]

00:51:40   know Eric's no let's just go back to our [TS]

00:51:42   Kestrel I think everybody's learned [TS]

00:51:43   their lesson it's been a longer oh god [TS]

00:51:46   don't I will hang up the sky that's [TS]

00:51:49   right that's right so take a go guys [TS]

00:51:52   Tony you excited I'm excited I wish I [TS]

00:51:56   knew when this was coming exactly yeah [TS]

00:51:59   you know what Falls a big time yeah I [TS]

00:52:01   think it's awesome that they've really [TS]

00:52:03   committed to a three-month period that [TS]

00:52:05   happens in 2017 because I was a little [TS]

00:52:07   worried this was gonna be coming January [TS]

00:52:09   28th day because they've only committed [TS]

00:52:11   to 2017 how many times now I think fall [TS]

00:52:14   means November 30th I don't know I'm [TS]

00:52:17   hopeful that that they will run the [TS]

00:52:19   whole of 15 episodes in in calendar 2017 [TS]

00:52:23   but who knows they we know that they [TS]

00:52:25   have been shooting already and they have [TS]

00:52:27   some stuff that looks like finished [TS]

00:52:28   effects so I mean yeah you know I I [TS]

00:52:32   would I would say that I'm bullish on [TS]

00:52:33   them actually delivering it now it's [TS]

00:52:35   good and I I don't think they would have [TS]

00:52:36   previewed it at the upfront if it were [TS]

00:52:38   in like somewhere within its absolute [TS]

00:52:40   Oberer absolutely I think that's right [TS]

00:52:43   plus I want to give it a boost they want [TS]

00:52:44   to they want to premiere it on CBS and [TS]

00:52:46   get people really intrigued by it and [TS]

00:52:48   and then fork out money on CBS all [TS]

00:52:51   access so I'm excited by it I think [TS]

00:52:53   we'll probably see more and they'll [TS]

00:52:55   probably give away the premise and [TS]

00:52:56   they'll take away all this air of [TS]

00:52:57   mystery that [TS]

00:52:58   built up with this with this teaser [TS]

00:52:59   trailer but new Star Trek right I mean [TS]

00:53:01   fundamentally how could you not be [TS]

00:53:03   excited about a new Star Trek my my [TS]

00:53:05   final thought is I mentioned Mass Effect [TS]

00:53:07   earlier and I am somebody who came very [TS]

00:53:10   very late to Mass Effect everybody was [TS]

00:53:12   talking about a great Mass Effect was [TS]

00:53:13   and and how fantastic it was and how [TS]

00:53:16   great the storytelling was and all that [TS]

00:53:17   stuff and it came during a very dark [TS]

00:53:18   period of me playing games and there are [TS]

00:53:21   a lot of people who have kind of dealt [TS]

00:53:24   with a dearth of I guess you would say [TS]

00:53:26   spaceship going science fiction shows on [TS]

00:53:29   TV for a while now [TS]

00:53:30   not just Star Trek and I feel like I [TS]

00:53:33   feel like you mentioned 2017 TV [TS]

00:53:36   serialized storytelling styles I think [TS]

00:53:40   there is that evolution that we've seen [TS]

00:53:42   in TV that has affected the way that [TS]

00:53:45   stories and a lot of games have been [TS]

00:53:46   told where we have trilogies of games [TS]

00:53:49   that tell this big like season arc type [TS]

00:53:53   of a story per game and I like the idea [TS]

00:53:56   of you know they're being shows like the [TS]

00:53:57   good place out there that subvert [TS]

00:53:59   expectations for what you're going to [TS]

00:54:01   get by the end of a season of that show [TS]

00:54:03   and by the end of season one it's almost [TS]

00:54:06   like you're part of the way into season [TS]

00:54:08   three of how a network show would [TS]

00:54:10   ordinarily do things business as usual [TS]

00:54:13   and I I want to I want to say that my [TS]

00:54:16   optimism will be rewarded I hope so [TS]

00:54:19   because Bryan Fuller had so much of a [TS]

00:54:21   formative influence on this and he [TS]

00:54:23   trusted the right people to handle the [TS]

00:54:25   show once he left it where we will get [TS]

00:54:28   that kind of Oh God [TS]

00:54:30   Star Trek can be this now Star Trek can [TS]

00:54:32   do this kind of stuff it's not hampered [TS]

00:54:34   by this it doesn't have to meet a [TS]

00:54:36   specific order number [TS]

00:54:37   originally we were told it was going to [TS]

00:54:38   be what like 10 episodes 12 was going to [TS]

00:54:40   be 12 it was going to be less than 15 [TS]

00:54:43   episodes and I don't think that they [TS]

00:54:45   just wanted to add another three [TS]

00:54:46   episodes I think they found three more [TS]

00:54:49   episodes of story to tell and that's [TS]

00:54:51   just the shape that the story took and [TS]

00:54:52   that if there's any of that kind of [TS]

00:54:55   Kremlinology that I can do about this [TS]

00:54:57   kind of stuff I really want that to come [TS]

00:54:59   through and deliver on yeah I I hate [TS]

00:55:03   even using the word franchise with Star [TS]

00:55:05   Trek even though it [TS]

00:55:07   help define what we think as a franchise [TS]

00:55:10   because to me it is about what it makes [TS]

00:55:12   me feel and what it has philosophically [TS]

00:55:14   behind it and I feel like we will get [TS]

00:55:17   will get breeze magic golden trophy of a [TS]

00:55:20   this is what this show is kind of [TS]

00:55:22   elevator pitch yeah I know that we're [TS]

00:55:24   gonna get that and I can't wait for us [TS]

00:55:27   to get that for it to hopefully confirm [TS]

00:55:29   a lot of the the optimism that I've got [TS]

00:55:32   for this show well you know you know [TS]

00:55:33   what those three episodes are once they [TS]

00:55:36   signed rain will scenario 3 order yep [TS]

00:55:39   the hearing but trilogy yes oh my god I [TS]

00:55:42   wonder where did that Harry Mudd come [TS]

00:55:45   from [TS]

00:55:45   I'll just go watch deep space 9 for [TS]

00:55:47   those uppers yes all right so the the [TS]

00:55:50   the last thing we got to to do is a [TS]

00:55:55   tease everybody about what we're going [TS]

00:55:57   to do at the incomparable about a weekly [TS]

00:56:00   Star Trek new Star Trek episodes we [TS]

00:56:03   don't know but I don't know if that's a [TS]

00:56:05   TV [TS]

00:56:06   YG's TV series or if it if it's if [TS]

00:56:10   random Trek does random Trek become [TS]

00:56:11   linear for 15-week waters and then go [TS]

00:56:15   back why I don't know what happens I [TS]

00:56:17   don't know I guess we've got until fall [TS]

00:56:20   to find out well and of course they have [TS]

00:56:23   also announced that they're going to [TS]

00:56:25   follow each episode with yeah talking [TS]

00:56:27   tracking Trek which is they should hire [TS]

00:56:29   why have they not hired us to do that [TS]

00:56:31   yet come on [TS]

00:56:32   right we're ready we're here yeah CBS [TS]

00:56:35   you have my numbered les Moonves you [TS]

00:56:37   know why do you know why all right we're [TS]

00:58:15   great unifiers a few and far between but [TS]
