The Incomparable

113: Indiana Jones is Immortal Now!

the incomparable podcast episode 113 [TS]

when Jason's now Dan Lauren serenity [TS]

Caldwell Lex Leland recorded lime a [TS]

disabled in Congress in montreal canada [TS]

  October granted well [TS]

flex this is music from Indiana Jane see [TS]

reason of movies starring Harrison Ford [TS]

right you may know him [TS]

have you seen Star Wars some of them yes [TS]

okay he got one of the guys if you [TS]

placed our jar binks I picked that i am [TS]

familiar with Harrison I i have not seen [TS]

Indiana Jones however and yet you're on [TS]

this panel and that you wanted to mock [TS]

me this is the incomparable podcast live [TS]

from the singleton symposium in montreal [TS]

canada we have fled the united states of [TS]

america because they have caught up to [TS]

our crimes after a hundred and twelve or [TS]

so episodes and our topic today is is [TS]

the Indiana Jones series we did a [TS]

podcast with John grouper back in [TS]

episode 9 i want to say something like [TS]

that donator nanya about raiders of the [TS]

lost ark where Dannan and john and i [TS]

just talked about how great it was but [TS]

we thought we would come back and try to [TS]

do something less obscure for something [TS]

where we actually have people watching [TS]

us talk and so we're going to talk about [TS]

  everybody's favorite archaeologists / [TS]

teacher indiana jones i actually just [TS]

got Louis Leakey is my favorite [TS]

  archaeologists slideshow floor almost [TS]

too bad for you know it's everything's [TS]

  everybody's favorite archaeologists and [TS]

what is wrong with you actually just got [TS]

a link on twitter right before we [TS]

started to a mcsweeney's article about [TS]

how success has been denied tenure [TS]

because he's really in class and having [TS]

his methods are questionable ethically [TS]

if you recall he climbs out of a window [TS]

to avoid doing office hours so not [TS]

generally the kind of Professor looking [TS]

for hands-on time but since they made [TS]

the institution co-educational the women [TS]

  students apparently love him [TS]

that's what I'm told and the men that [TS]

men want to be him [TS]

that's right mainly from Apple's anyway [TS]

joining me i should say for those who [TS]

haven't detected already who these [TS]

people are our Dan Morgan who has seen [TS]

  all the movies that [TS]

hello certainly caldwell who has seen [TS]

  all the movies right [TS]

even the one we're not talking about [TS]

what we'll talk about it maybe have to [TS]

well at the end and Lex Friedman who [TS]

  hasn't seen them [TS]

  I don't know why I'm here max hasn't [TS]

seen that's that's Lex has seen many [TS]

movies it's it's not true that he's not [TS]

seen any movies he just hasn't seen any [TS]

movies that anybody else has seen right [TS]

i basically there was a large gap in the [TS]

eighties and early nineties when if the [TS]

movie was fantastical my parents weren't [TS]

interested in they were the arbiters of [TS]

what we got to watch at home so I didn't [TS]

  see it [TS]

so relax and I haven't made up for that [TS]

  lost time [TS]

what do you know about Indiana Jones I [TS]

want to start before we start talking [TS]

about these movies i would like to quiz [TS]

you just let you see that youtube video [TS]

about the three-year-old explaining Star [TS]

Wars yeah this is basically the same [TS]

  thing [TS]

yes only 31 yeah its other that is [TS]

getting this is what I know I know it [TS]

stars Harrison Ford I believe Shawn [TS]

consciousness will do that yes Sean [TS]

Connery's island over in the fourth one [TS]

that people don't like that had the [TS]

nuclear bomb that he hides from a [TS]

refrigerator right doing great so far [TS]

yes it's like you've seen them in the [TS]

first 1i think the first one I don't [TS]

know which title goes with which movie [TS]

but in the first one there's the big [TS]

boulder that he runs away from yes and [TS]

everything I know about the first movie [TS]

i know from UHF and there's a thing [TS]

where he's got a bag of sand that he's [TS]

gotta replace the weight and he's got a [TS]

time right after that the see you've [TS]

seen the weird al yankovic parody of ya [TS]

see but not the actual movie and I know [TS]

there's one of the odm that I know that [TS]

at the end the the Nazis spoiler alert [TS]

get fried when the Ark of the Covenant [TS]

opens I know that happens that is [TS]

approximately he is basically seen it [TS]

  for them [TS]

he's seen the first five minutes in the [TS]

last five minutes there's nothing in the [TS]

middle right I know about the scene we [TS]

talked about where there's the Harrisons [TS]

got the gun and there's something else [TS]

with a sword and he just shoots the guy [TS]

with the sword instead of sword fighting [TS]

that's 30 seconds in the middle [TS]

something so I've essentially as the [TS]

audience our bases are covered [TS]

really shit so I grabbed two thumbs up [TS]

so when you weren't on our Raiders of [TS]

the Lost podcast but this is where that [TS]

this is where the whole series starts [TS]

and that's one of my favorite movies of [TS]

all time we should probably talk about [TS]

at least briefly although i just bought [TS]

that the blu-ray set of this which comes [TS]

with all four movies by the way you [TS]

cannot buy all four movies [TS]

meaning you get the kingdom of the [TS]

crystal skull which is this i believe [TS]

was animated with claymation monkeys [TS]

  something i don't know that's why I [TS]

maintain that movie would have been way [TS]

better if you know how everybody in the [TS]

Jones family is afraid of something like [TS]

Indiana Jones afraid of snakes didn't [TS]

know that i know and his dad's afraid of [TS]

rats i thought it would be much better [TS]

if his son had been afraid of monkeys [TS]

and so you can get the line you know [TS]

monkeys by dividing monkeys that would [TS]

have made my didn't happen so on the on [TS]

the blu-ray which looks beautiful and i [TS]

know you just saw the imax release which [TS]

preceded the blu-ray coming out but it [TS]

is it has this terrible revisionism in [TS]

it which it is now labeled as indiana [TS]

jones and the raiders of the lost ark [TS]

which is not the name but they decided [TS]

to insert that because it's it's like [TS]

that's as close to steven spielberg [TS]

comes to George Lucas level at least [TS]

even replace all the guns with [TS]

walkie-talkies liquidity that was awful [TS]

it was something that will not he has [TS]

since apologized and reverse it would [TS]

not make any sense of the guy with the [TS]

sword with the sword i want my [TS]

walkie-talkie and he falls down that [TS]

doesn't make any 7th Indiana Jones [TS]

single were you doing so so you have [TS]

things you'd like to say rant about [TS]

writers block start about righteousness [TS]

are so great well my mother is a huge [TS]

Indiana Jones fan and raised me to be a [TS]

  huge Indiana Jones fan [TS]

although elects raised me to be a huge [TS]

fan of the first and the third movie i [TS]

don't think i've seen temple of doom [TS]

since I was seven and I think I've only [TS]

seen it once or twice but Last Crusade [TS]

was pretty much on repeat in our house [TS]

where my mother would just go around not [TS]

necessarily always on the telly [TS]

vision but she would be quoting it [TS]

constantly so like no ticket was [TS]

sometimes a very popular line like when [TS]

she was giving my friends rides in our [TS]

minivan where she throw one of them out [TS]

of the purse and everything noticing it [TS]

but now is I'm indiana jones in general [TS]

is just a sort of cultural mainstay for [TS]

my mom in in the house and raiders i [TS]

hadn't i hadn't actually seen Raiders in [TS]

a couple years until the 35 millimeter [TS]

restoration which is very very poor of [TS]

me I know but I i came back to it [TS]

I out of sheer luck because i think you [TS]

told me about a 35-millimeter screening [TS]

happening in mill valley last year that [TS]

happen to have all of well all of the [TS]

heads of the effects Department [TS]

thereafter they showing to answer [TS]

questions and one of them poles this [TS]

little time like that at the end of the [TS]

film you know the Nazis get incinerated [TS]

but before they get incinerated they're [TS]

like oh you know what we are going to [TS]

film the opening of the Ark of the [TS]

Covenant for posterity we're gonna you [TS]

know we're going to see and take this [TS]

film and send it back to the Third Reich [TS]

and so they can see our glory and our [TS]

you know our magic I accept you know [TS]

that doesn't go so well for them in the [TS]

film camera melts and you know but I to [TS]

do that they use maquettes spoiler I and [TS]

one of the guys are ability to react [TS]

small model little yeah but sometimes I [TS]

made out of clay sometimes made out of [TS]

several various plastics but I the one [TS]

of the props guys who is there [TS]

he's like oh yeah i have that i have the [TS]

film or the the little camera in my [TS]

pocket you want to come see you just [TS]

don't sit out the terrible why but [TS]

everybody's do not do not follow that I [TS]

have my cats for raiders of the lost ark [TS]

money and my pain my car [TS]

actually I know he pulls out this tiny [TS]

little camera and it's only you know I [TS]

I'm gesturing for our real audience but [TS]

our radio audience it's only about you [TS]

know and an inch or two tall this little [TS]

tiny things like here you want to hold [TS]

it and I'm like yeah [TS]

this but so that mean that was really [TS]

cool and the way to a woman's heart is [TS]

  through models [TS]

yes little tiny monster monster movies [TS]

amazing movies that I love dearly [TS]

how old were you when you saw it for the [TS]

first time because it's a little weird i [TS]

just showed my kids rid of the lost ark [TS]

and and it's a little bit scary [TS]

I mean that plus people like melt at the [TS]

end which is a little harsh [TS]

you know the strange i think i saw last [TS]

crusade before I saw a raiders because i [TS]

think my mother deemed that more you [TS]

know more more child-friendly yeah well [TS]

I mean there are there are some you know [TS]

scary things in i mean there's a guy [TS]

melting away into nothingness and bones [TS]

and betta other than I but that also [TS]

happens in rare so what was the movie [TS]

your kids introduction to Nazis Jason [TS]

that's a good question i was gonna say [TS]

that is actually the one more than ok [TS]

cool part so the reality is my kids knew [TS]

the entire plot of all three movies [TS]

before they ever saw the movies because [TS]

of lego indiana jones which they played [TS]

all the way through and this is actually [TS]

troops the Star Wars movies 2 which is a [TS]

really bizarre way to be introduced to a [TS]

movie series is to know the plot but [TS]

retold through kind of wacky lego high [TS]

jinks because they don't and they don't [TS]

say anything there's no dialogue no no [TS]

they cry and they laugh and and and [TS]

there are like movie references that the [TS]

kids kind of don't get it all so i'm [TS]

very curious uh how do they handle the [TS]

face melting seen Raiders in lego [TS]

indiana jones no i don't know i think i [TS]

think there's just a big explosion in [TS]

May and their blocks that all they were [TS]

  blown two blocks right [TS]

nothing looks just like the Nazis [TS]

deserved yeah I think that's what they [TS]

know about that and I have an issue in [TS]

Raiders of the Lost Ark be the Nazis are [TS]

  there they're scary they're they're not [TS]

i mean there are competent to a certain [TS]

extent and then beyond that I mean the [TS]

truck eat there are better ways to move [TS]

of a piece of valuable historical [TS]

content through the desert rather than [TS]

having sort of what a guy in a truck [TS]

with a couple of guys in the back and [TS]

then a car and then the guys in car [TS]

watches the truck is slowly assaulted [TS]

and a plane Jackson that well then they [TS]

blew it up but apparently Nazis can't [TS]

drive like the the level of competence [TS]

in that driving squad and envy you know [TS]

general competence shot squad is very [TS]

low feel like oh yeah we're just we're [TS]

just gonna watch this guy you know this [TS]

guy with the hat come and take over [TS]

literally just watch as Indiana Jones [TS]

could gradually takes control of the [TS]

truck they don't want to crash into the [TS]

truck they don't try to slow down they [TS]

they just sort of like no no there's an [TS]

action scene going on just it's cool [TS]

let's watch what i want to tell me a pro [TS]

and I there's probably there's one thing [TS]

in that action chase scene where I think [TS]

all the Nazis were either in the back of [TS]

the truck or the Nazis in like the truck [TS]

next door that eventually come over they [TS]

all have this like oh there's something [TS]

exciting happen we get to go [TS]

participated and they start climbing [TS]

over one by one is that is that behind [TS]

the truck is that the transmittance the [TS]

guys the guys in the truck climb over [TS]

the obvious you're going back this [TS]

really excited look like oh we're going [TS]

to get to do something rather than stand [TS]

around and watch people dig room and [TS]

  they all died [TS]

yeah they'll die I don't know the [TS]

downfall of the Third Reich was their [TS]

inability to obey traffic laws but the [TS]

Nazis and the Raiders are scary and in [TS]

somewhat competent and and Minnesota [TS]

medicine menacing and you got towed who [TS]

is the guy who goes to visit he follows [TS]

indie on the on the plane and then he [TS]

goes to Marion's bar and it almost [TS]

brings her face with a red-hot poker and [TS]

ends up with the the impression of the [TS]

staff on burned into his hand mean he's [TS]

a scary guy so scary in fact that when [TS]

he takes off his coat and is a making a [TS]

little metal little a little hanger it [TS]

you think that he's got a torture device [TS]

but it turns out he's just gonna hang [TS]

his coat up but he's really scary and [TS]

the Nazis in general scary with the [TS]

problem i have with last crusade is that [TS]

the Nazis in that movie or more like [TS]

like the like Boss Hogg from the Dukes [TS]

of Hazzard here a little there a little [TS]

bit wackier and incompetent which I [TS]

don't think doesn't but all those movie [TS]

  set [TS]

like in the late thirties early forties [TS]

is it happening during World War Two [TS]

idea is once again so we have you know [TS]

you have Raiders and then [TS]

Temple of Doom is actually a prequel I [TS]

don't say you're too early and 236 yeah [TS]

and then last year's which takes place [TS]

of those three movies are our buddy or [TS]

fighting World War two and then that [TS]

fourth movie is is set like in the [TS]

actual sort of time just distance within [TS]

the fifties so when you're the second [TS]

one he said is a prequel then so there's [TS]

no you never fear for his life if you [TS]

know that he will rest don't know I was [TS]

gonna say that if their first movie that [TS]

you saw his last crusade you know you [TS]

know he's probably okay because I'm [TS]

gonna get that kind of movie anyways [TS]

doesn't matter it's a rock right it was [TS]

really fun movie you know James Bond's [TS]

never gonna die they're not gonna kill [TS]

him off or will then I mean the only [TS]

leaves too many so just bring in another [TS]

yeah we didn't know the Nazis are [TS]

considerably more bumbling in Last [TS]

  Crusade I don't think that's necessarily [TS]

a problem totally it's a very different [TS]

movie it's a lot it's a lot more comedic [TS]

I mean not say the Raiders isn't funny [TS]

and witty and there are clever lines of [TS]

dialogue is clever and set pieces but [TS]

the last crusade is clearly much more of [TS]

  a character-driven p-side saying in some [TS]

ways and it's really about the [TS]

relationship between Andy and his dad [TS]

and it's edit is lighter and I think one [TS]

of the reasons it's lighter and [TS]

strainers has some darkness in it and [TS]

some funny things and but it's and i [TS]

love that movie so much the second movie [TS]

which we should talk about at least a [TS]

little bit and I don't particularly like [TS]

about them the first five or ten minutes [TS]

is really dark and I feel like the third [TS]

movie is lighter and more Robbie [TS]

partially I think as backlash it because [TS]

it was that movie was criticized and not [TS]

really liked by a lot of people because [TS]

it was so dark I mean people like [TS]

ripping people's hardly because i [TS]

believe it was the first movie ever to [TS]

have a pg-13 rating was the first one to [TS]

have it was the were the one that [TS]

necessitated they needed to have another [TS]

rating because people were taking their [TS]

kids to see this movie and it was really [TS]

dark and scary it's the opening sequence [TS]

in as families do miss grade right with [TS]

which is what kate capshaw singing [TS]

anything goes in in Chinese except [TS]

during yeah yeah yeahs which is great [TS]

but it felt like I mean what i liked [TS]

about it was that and Shanghai right it [TS]

feels it feels a little bit like a James [TS]

Bond movie there's this scene where [TS]

  indeed [TS]

he's wearing a tux and he's basically [TS]

there to like make a trade off for this [TS]

this gem accident down at the tables [TS]

that have moved it over the lazy susan [TS]

and then it's sort of like there's this [TS]

constant shift of power back and forth [TS]

where he and this gangster sort of [TS]

trying to outdo each other than the guy [TS]

turns out the guys poisoned him and has [TS]

the antidote so we need to get the [TS]

antidote and of course all hell breaks [TS]

loose and they're running around and [TS]

it's a little more slap sticky at that [TS]

point but there is it reminds me of a [TS]

james bond set because there's a giant [TS]

diamond and there's the vial containing [TS]

the antidote and there's a a riot on [TS]

this dance floor and both of those [TS]

objects are being kicked throughout as [TS]

as kate capshaw is seeking the diamond [TS]

than India seeking his his a vial of [TS]

  antidote [TS]

I would just point out that whatever de [TS]

Morgan's on the dance floor there's a [TS]

ride on the dance floor [TS]

it's true he's a very good dancer [TS]

little-known fact about the morning [TS]

thanks Lex any other thoughts you have [TS]

about the what do you do you know [TS]

anything about the second moving but I [TS]

you just mentioned that somebody rip [TS]

somebody's heart out of your chest yeah [TS]

that's about all that's pretty scary [TS]

yes it is the first is the person live [TS]

to see the heart rate down [TS]

I don't think so no well yeah it's not i [TS]

don't i really don't like the temple of [TS]

doom I think it's a real angel i skip it [TS]

because Dave risk is yes the whole city [TS]

should use good watching the first 10 [TS]

minutes watch until they bail out of the [TS]

plane there's a great isn't mine mine [TS]

sequence there's a great laugh line when [TS]

they get to the airport and you think [TS]

everything is resolved and he slams the [TS]

door shut on the airplane and and nice [TS]

trial oj and he closes the door and it [TS]

says /a air freight like okay [TS]

unaenda cameo a brief cameo rip dan [TS]

Aykroyd yeah strange why is he and yeah [TS]

because doing a British accent there's [TS]

the whole mind chase thing that the end [TS]

  set-pieces really well done [TS]

there's you know a couple nice action [TS]

sequences at the end there's a lot of [TS]

gross out stuff right there's that other [TS]

is there's a whole banquet of like [TS]

delicacies which are all these really [TS]

like monkey brain res yeah and the two [TS]

things I remember it's really a bit [TS]

differently in my head again totally [TS]

it's very weird and then there's a scene [TS]

with a bunch of bugs around whether and [TS]

then they're gonna get crushed by these [TS]

giant rocks and I don't know I kind of [TS]

  like short round [TS]

  I am you sure [TS]

down to is a kind of a cool side [TS]

characters you see you ever seen the [TS]

goonies know is i just used and what is [TS]

the reason we brought you here but I [TS]

mean there isn't there a couple nights [TS]

set pieces in Temple of Doom i think but [TS]

overall it lacks the residence in many [TS]

ways and I think part of that for me as [TS]

a kid was knowing about these movies in [TS]

knowing walnut in the first movie goes [TS]

after the ark of the covenant which is a [TS]

fairly prominent you know archaeological [TS]

artifact in the third movie goes after [TS]

the Holy Grail which is obviously you're [TS]

pretty prominent and the second one is [TS]

  about these rocks [TS]

that's why and like a death cult right [TS]

that's right and its kind of Holly's [TS]

death cold it's kind of not it doesn't [TS]

resonate as well I think in some ways [TS]

because it's not as much of a pop [TS]

  culture thing [TS]

yeah well and even India has his off [TS]

days but that doesn't necessarily mean [TS]

we have to watch him [TS]

the thing that drives me the most crazy [TS]

about Temple of Doom is that Kate [TS]

Capshaw is such ilike kate capshaw [TS]

outside of this movie inside of this [TS]

movie she's the most screeching in [TS]

  comprehensible completely impossible to [TS]

deal with character who just seems to [TS]

get in a lot of trouble and doesn't [TS]

really do anything I mean you know [TS]

Marion in the first movie gets in a lot [TS]

of trouble but she at least smart talks [TS]

are way out of some things and she's [TS]

she's got some point she's got spunk [TS]

she's confident she survived in the [TS]

you-know-what where she didn't Islander [TS]

not in thailand in Russia where she was [TS]

appalled appalled in the beginning of [TS]

the movie like she survives therefore [TS]

God knows how many years after her [TS]

father dies before I'm winters you can [TS]

happen is you know she's a confident [TS]

character even the not the Nazi woman [TS]

whose name I Elsa race Elsa she's more [TS]

competent like she she is not my [TS]

favorite of the Indiana Jones heroin [TS]

earth the ladies ladies yeah leading [TS]

ladies not but you know Kate Capshaw I [TS]

feel like has no reason for being there [TS]

other than she can sing anything goes in [TS]

Mandarin and she ended up marrying [TS]

steven spielberg so that was really [TS]

great for Steven Spielberg well right in [TS]

Raiders and he's got his [TS]

collects a group as he goes and it's [TS]

ending these competent people he's got [TS]

sala in Egypt and then marian says I'm [TS]

your goddamn partner right so she's [TS]

gonna come along for the ride and the [TS]

second movie it's almost like to get [TS]

saddled with sidekicks and calling out [TS]

of play and made sure around this is [TS]

kind of fun although there is also that [TS]

moment of like why are you why are you [TS]

taking a little kid and having him like [TS]

drive a getaway car through the streets [TS]

of Shanghai while you're being shot at [TS]

anything goes Jayson it's and then so in [TS]

again in the third movie in Last Crusade [TS]

  it's like back-to-basics it's let's [TS]

let's go back to the Nazis and [TS]

historical artifact solid is back Marcus [TS]

Brody they dragged him along you tried [TS]

for mocking Charlotte turns is brought [TS]

is brought out from the University and [TS]

we see more of him and it turns out a [TS]

lot of people to survive anything [TS]

you know it's tough because a lot of [TS]

people think he's got this he's got the [TS]

sort of mentor role in the first one [TS]

right he's and so of course in the in [TS]

the last one he ends up being somewhat [TS]

more bumbling but i still love him and [TS]

then home elliott as an actor they're [TS]

doing these things it has such great [TS]

moments would be you know Andy trying to [TS]

convince the Nazis like he'll blend and [TS]

he knows every local culture he speaks [TS]

dozen languages got friends everywhere [TS]

  you'll never find him [TS]

Maxine it is insane here speak English [TS]

or perhaps ancient Greek no one's gonna [TS]

do he's been in the ivory tower too long [TS]

I thought you said even blood did you [TS]

know Marcus he got lost in the museum [TS]

once lost his own Museum yeah but it was [TS]

so great to see those characters back [TS]

again I both both solid Marcus in a [TS]

movie and then we of course we get sean [TS]

connery Henry Jones as as as in tennis [TS]

is really what makes the the third movie [TS]

for me is that and what 10 years apart [TS]

in age to it yet we're traveling 12 [TS]

years apart in age so it's sean connery [TS]

really only tenuously able to be [TS]

Harrison Ford father so I love the fact [TS]

that you said you gotta cast you know [TS]

Indiana Jones father who is the only [TS]

person who's badass enough to be Indiana [TS]

Jones father james bond and yet he plays [TS]

totally against high prairie and he does [TS]

a fantastic job of this you know [TS]

professor you know professor of [TS]

archaeology like his son but they're [TS]

also they don't talk they're estranged [TS]

they have this very difficult [TS]

relationship you get the hinted support [TS]

that you know his mother was sick and [TS]

  didn't tell [TS]

his father and so she died and left him [TS]

to raise india by himself right and they [TS]

they're very strained and they have even [TS]

though they work in the same field [TS]

there's a certain element of you know [TS]

the competitiveness and it to me [TS]

it resonates as a father-son [TS]

relationship they do a great job of [TS]

capturing that there's a brilliant [TS]

moment where the riding on this [TS]

motorcycle in the sidecar and their plan [TS]

through Nazis and you know it yeah [TS]

Indiana Jones grabs he grabs the flanks [TS]

of Hazzard Nazis but yes he grabs a [TS]

flagpole and there's this guy come up [TS]

and more cycling is on swing his gun and [TS]

he takes flight plan sticks in the guys [TS]

wheel and flips the the motorcycle be [TS]

kind of greens to himself he looks down [TS]

his dad and that just gives him his [TS]

disapproving look checks and watch and [TS]

it's like anyone who's ever you know [TS]

tried to do anything you know any songs [TS]

every right to bottom for their father [TS]

or something like that kind of [TS]

experience that moment or something like [TS]

that when you're with your day [TS]

never never never he's never run away [TS]

from Nazis with your dad you get in the [TS]

sidecar of your motorcycle on your way [TS]

to Berlin to get the fewer to sign an [TS]

autograph its last a lot of stuff [TS]

my favorite moment there is actually [TS]

when Indy first runs into his father and [TS]

by runs into I mean he smashes through a [TS]

window where his father is being held [TS]

captive in a formerly is it was like ask [TS]

it's supposed to be a castle or Austrian [TS]

border yes so he crashes through the [TS]

window and henry john senior hit him [TS]

over the head with a fake replica vat of [TS]

Oz and he falls always like I was like [TS]

junior any ghost is like yes sir [TS]

it's like he's just gonna hit over there [TS]

I thought you were one of them [TS]

dad they come into the door code and [TS]

you've seen this movie a lot of this is [TS]

one of your favorite movies is that is [TS]

one of my favorite movies i did like [TS]

like when I saw it first [TS]

um in it was something I saw in my [TS]

aunt's house when I was kid you're so [TS]

young i know i saw this i saw to the [TS]

movie theater in college you're killing [TS]

  me here [TS]

well at least I saw already by the time [TS]

it come out was not married he had no no [TS]

I was doing some favors but I and I went [TS]

back from there to fill in i mean i [TS]

remember my experience watching it then [TS]

and I really liked it and then I went [TS]

over to my friend Evan's house when I [TS]

was in high school and a bunch of us [TS]

were there for a sleepover for his [TS]

birthday when we were like 15 16 or [TS]

  something like that [TS]

your hands like always watch all three [TS]

Indiana Jones movies we watch the [TS]

raiders of the lost ark start to watch [TS]

temple of doom we got through the first [TS]

10 minutes ago the rest of this movie [TS]

sucks turns about that we went to last [TS]

year's day and watch the rest of that [TS]

but yeah I don't know that maybe it's [TS]

just cuz the comedic aspect you know I [TS]

think really I i really enjoy that and I [TS]

really enjoyed the dynamic between her [TS]

support and sean connery there's a mean [TS]

there's a lot of reasons to like the [TS]

Last Crusade I wanted to before we talk [TS]

about that a little bit more i wanted to [TS]

talk about something that I think makes [TS]

Indiana Jones a great action hero which [TS]

is the fact that he is affected and [TS]

troubled and and isn't he's rumpled he's [TS]

he's you know he he gets hurt [TS]

he has phobias he he gets kind of [TS]

tormented and you can tell that it that [TS]

these things bother him and that [TS]

includes his father treating him kind of [TS]

badly and you can tell that it upsets [TS]

him in the in the first movie he gets [TS]

beat up and and you know he's not [TS]

impervious when he gets beat up he feels [TS]

it and in it hurts all over except like [TS]

here right here honey it's the mileage [TS]

yeah yeah and that's one of the things I [TS]

love about that character is that he [TS]

doesn't he doesn't show us that he's [TS]

this impervious superhero he's in fact [TS]

really human and can really get hurt and [TS]

get angry and and also just be annoyed [TS]

right which i think in the second movie [TS]

that's I mean that's the reason Kate [TS]

Capshaw's there is really just to bug [TS]

him and she does a great books everybody [TS]

was happy to remind me a lot of John [TS]

McClane to from die hard right Sam [TS]

certainly feels like they're very [TS]

vulnerable right and to me we actually [TS]

we had a discussion about this when we [TS]

watch Last Crusade about the end scene [TS]

where they you know try to force indeed [TS]

to basically we gotta find you know the [TS]

you gotta go get the Grail right and to [TS]

save your damsel and you know the guy's [TS]

got a gun on musically you can't shoot [TS]

me is like you know what you're right [TS]

and shoots his dad which i think is just [TS]

one of the brilliant moments of your [TS]

right there is no threat to that from [TS]

either from him he knows he's not it's [TS]

not an issue that because they need they [TS]

need him to get it and from us as the [TS]

audience we know it's Indiana Jones he's [TS]

not gonna he's not a threat but like [TS]

Superman for example which is another [TS]

great example he is impervious right so [TS]

there's never any threat to Superman [TS]

let's do the whole kryptonite thing but [TS]

the way to get Superman [TS]

to get to the people that he loves that [TS]

is that is the way to make that have [TS]

steaks is by putting those people in [TS]

jeopardy applies if you personally this [TS]

  is real kryptonite [TS]

let's say you heard of Superman i have [TS]

heard Superman i have not seen die hard [TS]

oh wow put on the list put on the list [TS]

lacquer sing list but one of the nice [TS]

things about and I know another movie [TS]

that you loved and especially as [TS]

Lawrence of Arabia yes I and we share [TS]

that I i love that movie too especially [TS]

the 1st half 2nd half a little dark but [TS]

still got a classic right one of the [TS]

nice things about the scope of the last [TS]

crusade is that they are out in the [TS]

desert and they're there are you know it [TS]

  feels big [TS]

yes it is an epic and going out having [TS]

them out in the desert miss that hold [TS]

like the tank battle and they're dead [TS]

they're going through the sand and the [TS]

writing on the horses at the end and [TS]

there's everything that's in the caves [TS]

it's just I i love that whole part [TS]

because it's such a tank battle goes on [TS]

maybe a little too long but it's such a [TS]

  it's a such a balance 0 [TS]

yeah it really is that it feels wide [TS]

open and epic in a in a classic movie [TS]

  kind of way [TS]

arg it's got claws 14 units are not [TS]

random vistas hello i believe has often [TS]

been speaking or a lot of that scene the [TS]

tank sequence was in Spain Spain it's [TS]

got some terrain that they can double [TS]

  for ya [TS]

although the tank battle does give us [TS]

that lovely moment at the end but the [TS]

tape goes over the cliff and sean [TS]

connery thinks that Indies also fallen [TS]

over the cliff with it and of course in [TS]

the edge he pulls himself up by the vine [TS]

and all three of them you know Marcus [TS]

insallah and Henry are all like looking [TS]

over the edge and he comes up behind [TS]

them just goes you know look at the [TS]

hands shaking his hand close well as [TS]

close it was down there what are you [TS]

  looking at [TS]

  yeah so I know I agree there's a [TS]

suitably epic scope to it that you don't [TS]

get in temple of doom which is a much [TS]

  more claustrophobic movie [TS]

yeah anyways and there is a plans and [TS]

there are Zeppelin's yes but the one of [TS]

my favorite things in any piece of [TS]

fiction frankly is are there Zeppelin's [TS]

you have to ask question and the answer [TS]

is yes there's a good chance i'm gonna [TS]

like it at the Zeppelin in in Last [TS]

Crusade he where they go on without a [TS]

  ticket it's a german [TS]

well they go up they go on I have [TS]

tickets they're they're being hunted [TS]

right and so the idea not see them come [TS]

to Berlin comes to trade like check on [TS]

everybody and of course Harrison Ford [TS]

season doing this and basically dresses [TS]

up as you know the the attended and as [TS]

the Nazis questioning his father tapped [TS]

him on the shoulder and gets that brief [TS]

moment of recognition and indeed just [TS]

throw them out the Zeppelin yeah looks [TS]

around he goes no tako ticket is not [TS]

only got a ticket but another great [TS]

moment there I mean you know you end up [TS]

with a conversation between the the [TS]

henry and India about you know well we [TS]

never really talked when I was a kid me [TS]

that's what we're here now what do you [TS]

want to talk about he's like I can't [TS]

think of anything it's hard it's hard to [TS]

is hard to have I do find it very very [TS]

illuminating the as a relationship [TS]

because it again to that point of him [TS]

being not a Superman you know he has a [TS]

dad right and there's a certain amount [TS]

of vulnerability to having your father [TS]

you know trying to impress on your [TS]

  father that you know I'm a grown-up I [TS]

have accomplished things in my life I [TS]

don't do things the way that you do but [TS]

that doesn't mean I'm not successful and [TS]

especially when you know for people who [TS]

end up in similar career paths to their [TS]

fathers you know you get a lot of [TS]

friction i think a lot of times a lot of [TS]

butting heads and records he didn't do [TS]

it the way his dad did oldest [TS]

archaeology different meals good Sean [TS]

Connery should talk a little bit about [TS]

the opening to that movie too since we [TS]

get sort of a nice little flashback to [TS]

what is it is supposed to be 12 [TS]

oh its young Indiana Jones 13 hours with [TS]

river with River Phoenix as young and [TS]

jones and we and we learn the origin of [TS]

Indy's fear of snakes and of that the [TS]

scar that Harrison Ford has on his chin [TS]

that he always has on his chin but in [TS]

this it's explained that he gets it in [TS]

this adventure that he has out again out [TS]

in the wide-open spaces of like it's [TS]

like 1918 and he's 12 and 12 minutes on [TS]

my scalp a railroad duh [TS]

this is a railroad main yes so he's on [TS]

my waist to have a boy scout adventure [TS]

on that day on horses or mules or [TS]

they're tracking After let's explore [TS]

some caves but don't get too lost and of [TS]

course the cave that indie simples upon [TS]

  happens [TS]

to be excavated right there are [TS]

necessary figure out and there and there [TS]

archaeologists who yeah it's a fake [TS]

because you think it's gonna be in [TS]

general because you see a guy in a hat [TS]

and there's anything else who has not [TS]

been identified yet yeah but it turns [TS]

out that he is he is a the the bad kind [TS]

of archaeologists right well easy [TS]

I mean I always wondered about that was [TS]

he just Indiana Jones I think he's a [TS]

slightly more mercantile your mercenary [TS]

sorry mercenary Indiana Jones you know [TS]

he's kind of more than the grave robber [TS]

side he's kind of the all the other [TS]

polarizing figure because you've got his [TS]

dad who is the very by-the-book [TS]

archaeologists and you've got this other [TS]

influencing figure who says you know [TS]

leaves him with those you know you lost [TS]

today but you don't have to like it and [TS]

give them the hat and everything you [TS]

know that the end in Raiders Belloc is [TS]

his his competitor and he has that great [TS]

line about where you know we're not that [TS]

different you and i genuinely sad line [TS]

that has been reused everything every [TS]

terrible right it would take only what [TS]

is it one small not just two nights to [TS]

make you like me haha but but that's [TS]

that that's the point is that if you [TS]

look at at what he does he does bring [TS]

mean in Raiders when he got comes back [TS]

he says I got a lot of good pieces and [TS]

the museum will buy them and there is [TS]

that question like is he [TS]

I mean he's kind of a grave robber I [TS]

there's a question about the overall [TS]

ethics of what of what he does and in [TS]

Last Crusade you that's this guy you [TS]

know he you know he is he good is he bad [TS]

he's a lot like indie and that's I think [TS]

that's one of the questions [TS]

well and it's also one of the [TS]

overarching themes of Indiana Jones is a [TS]

character where you know he he's an [TS]

archaeologist first and foremost and he [TS]

is fascinated by certain pieces and [TS]

certain things and those drive him [TS]

forward and it doesn't necessarily no [TS]

laws and rules don't necessarily need to [TS]

matter it's just about getting something [TS]

done and finding a way to do that and [TS]

getting battered up and bruised in the [TS]

process and you see that a little bit in [TS]

the prologue Ruiz you know he's taking [TS]

that piece away from them even though [TS]

they rightfully found it because he's [TS]

like no this is a very important [TS]

historical piece this should be in a [TS]

museum red heels righteous about it he [TS]

carries it on for like 20 more years [TS]

because I mean we we passed through time [TS]

from thirteen-year-old indiana jones two [TS]

you know your late twenties early [TS]

  thirties [TS]

en Jones and he's on a boat and he's [TS]

like yes I finally found this piece it's [TS]

only taken me 20 years but hey you know [TS]

a man with his obsessions [TS]

yeah just like his father really i mean [TS]

because that's the whole sort of point [TS]

there's his dad was really obsessed with [TS]

Grail lore and to the detriment of [TS]

raising his son and so it turns out they [TS]

have a lot of common but you have gone [TS]

about it different ways to movies about [TS]

obsessions you know I Indies mother dies [TS]

because she doesn't tell him something [TS]

Andy's father spends the rest of his [TS]

life trying to figure out something for [TS]

eternal life because you know if you [TS]

can't help but think that those are [TS]

those two things are connected [TS]

electrically have you seen monty python [TS]

and the holy grail I have yes [TS]

oh ok this is just like that it wasn't [TS]

  like that [TS]

  that's what I mean it doesn't have a [TS]

knight of the round table so maybe [TS]

that's the roundtable those know it's [TS]

the it's gonna say Crusades Crusades [TS]

  nights [TS]

yeah it's um thats the end of that movie [TS]

is a with the steps that he has to take [TS]

and any already goes over the the bridge [TS]

and and it's that leap of faith that [TS]

he's got and then with the really [TS]

classic moment where Julian Glover who [TS]

we haven't mentioned from from empire [TS]

strikes back from the Empire Strikes [TS]

Back and he was he was in one of my [TS]

favorite old doctor who episodes to the [TS]

city of death by Douglas Adams see it [TS]

all is well connected is all connected [TS]

um Julian Glover is gets his shot at the [TS]

Holy Grail from the wall of cups which [TS]

is such a great but sadly he lets the [TS]

femme fatale choose and deliberately [TS]

  killed him [TS]

yeah he hecho is poorly right which is [TS]

that classic line that the that that [TS]

it's such a great moment where India [TS]

gets to use his the the Jones the Jones [TS]

smarts to say who would have what would [TS]

that cut be actually and it's the [TS]

plainest cup of all and use it to not to [TS]

give himself eternal life necessarily or [TS]

does he is any images together only [TS]

debate is anybody you know when we are [TS]

30 states his dad but then you know just [TS]

statistics every every every I think [TS]

once you watch this for the first time [TS]

especially if you watch it when you're [TS]

like a teenager you have to have that [TS]

debate like Indiana Jones immortal now [TS]

but you know you can find all the [TS]

loopholes and everything well he cross [TS]

past the seal maybe has to keep drinking [TS]

from it to keep alive because that guy [TS]

I you know there's a knight who has been [TS]

there for 700 years and clearly he's not [TS]

like you know buying food to the grocery [TS]

store down the street and coming back [TS]

and hanging out the Holy Grail right so [TS]

  I don't think so [TS]

he hasn't delivered yeah yeah it may [TS]

have been a little and predicates a [TS]

really long time to get the takeout [TS]

pizza when the pizza guy keeps getting [TS]

decapitated by your defense it's true [TS]

that's a good point so yeah and I like [TS]

the the ending of that movie too where [TS]

you have that brief scene where you know [TS]

Elsa of course tries to take the Grail [TS]

past the seal which they're not supposed [TS]

to do the whole thing starts so break up [TS]

in this earthquake and she falls down [TS]

the chasm and Andy's grabbed her and she [TS]

thinks she can reach the Grail and she [TS]

won't give in to your other hand and she [TS]

falls to her death which is pretty dark [TS]

also for an Indiana Jones movie this is [TS]

interesting because she had their [TS]

services James Bond parallel we have [TS]

these two you know female leads from the [TS]

previous movies who our heroines in [TS]

various ways and this one clearly not a [TS]

heroine right she is manipulative she's [TS]

an opportunist she is there to do her [TS]

own thing and she basically you know but [TS]

raised in d into giving up all of the [TS]

location of the Grail and all this but [TS]

she still also tries to argue that we [TS]

can get out of here it's just you and me [TS]

and we've got this and she's really [TS]

looking for that opportunity and so when [TS]

she falls her death you know he stumbles [TS]

in and he thinks he can reach it and it [TS]

takes his dad coming over and saying you [TS]

  know let it go [TS]

and of course this from the guy who is [TS]

notoriously obsessed with the Grail so [TS]

it brings a weight to that of even him [TS]

saying I found this thing I've been [TS]

looking for my entire life and it's not [TS]

worth losing my son over like I've got [TS]

he is a matter of perspective of my [TS]

priorities now I don't have to watch it [TS]

  now [TS]

now you know what it all means you still [TS]

really should watch it lacks utilize I [TS]

think he is immortal though because then [TS]

he hides in a refrigerator during a [TS]

nuclear bomb blast and survives so i [TS]

think he is actually immortal should we [TS]

talk about what happened what happened [TS]

i'll tell my favorite story about of [TS]

that it's not a prequel I was sequel I [TS]

will tell my favorite story about this [TS]

there was years and years of speculation [TS]

of there being another Indiana Jones [TS]

movie and people would ask repeatedly [TS]

  Harrison Ford [TS]

whether or not there's going to be [TS]

another one and a certain point I think [TS]

even after they sort of announce ok [TS]

we're going to do one at some point I [TS]

remember a story where someone asked him [TS]

what's the what's going to be in [TS]

harrison ford clearly i don't know if he [TS]

was drunk or what he told that [TS]

oh yeah it's uh indiana jones and the [TS]

opal of the MERM and prints and and [TS]

people ran with that it's not even [TS]

  serious her why not [TS]

and i love it because it sounds like a [TS]

harry potter book that you know one of [TS]

the funny things about about these [TS]

movies is that they don't get done [TS]

without Steven Spielberg and George [TS]

Lucas and I think that's one of the [TS]

reasons why it would they went so long [TS]

as they they had other stuff to do [TS]

really George Lucas hello George Lucas [TS]

was doing some other stuff and Steven [TS]

Spielberg I mean these are the innocent [TS]

Spielberg's a busy guy who is making [TS]

lots of movies many of which are [TS]

meaningful and win Oscars and things [TS]

like that right there is he's arguably [TS]

one of the you know great living [TS]

directors right and has made some bad [TS]

movies and has made some fantastic [TS]

movies but they did the deal was always [TS]

that Spielberg directed and Lucas would [TS]

come up with a story now there's some [TS]

issues there right but it is it's [TS]

fascinating to see Spielberg come back [TS]

to the series because Spielberg i would [TS]

argue maybe does his best work in any [TS]

movie and raiders of the lost ark it [TS]

it's not just it's an adventure and it's [TS]

got its silly moments but it's kind of [TS]

brilliantly directed I think you can [TS]

actually one of the was talking to John [TS]

Gruber before this about one of the [TS]

possibilities of doing a podcast here [TS]

and I said you know we we should do [TS]

sometimes somewhere is take that blu-ray [TS]

of raiders and do what Roger Ebert does [TS]

with Citizen Kane which is play it and [TS]

then at any point anybody can raise [TS]

their hands and pause it and talk about [TS]

what they're seeing on the screen I i [TS]

think it Raiders is so great as a as a [TS]

movie with the way it's shot in the way [TS]

it's directed at you that it would it [TS]

would withstand that level of scrutiny [TS]

is a i will i will happily conceded as a [TS]

better craftedmovie than the last [TS]

crusade though last state has a special [TS]

place in my sure sure but it's funny [TS]

then with the Kingdom of the Crystal [TS]

Skull to see these guys get the band [TS]

  back together and [TS]

to our state fairs and as it turns out [TS]

and maybe you shouldn't get again and [TS]

get back together after that you know it [TS]

makes me sad because there are little [TS]

snippets of crystal skull that I [TS]

actually somewhat in like rereading I [TS]

haven't seen since i saw it in theaters [TS]

and going over the synopsis before we [TS]

sat down to talk about Indiana Jones [TS]

today I I realized you know some of the [TS]

stuff that i remember i actually really [TS]

like and there are some that it's nice [TS]

to see a little bit of closure to indy [TS]

the story Mary and things like that [TS]

that's that's nice that's great but then [TS]

the other two-thirds of the movie are [TS]

you know okay we're going to push the [TS]

boundary of is it isn't it magic to [TS]

full-on alien speculation and we're [TS]

going to throw in CGI monkeys and we're [TS]

going to throw in all you know exploding [TS]

things and nuclear fridges and it just [TS]

it it takes a small want the want for a [TS]

closure of a fun romp in a story and [TS]

then it just you know it's it's as if a [TS]

bunch of terrible's a bunch of terrible [TS]

Hollywood types got together and sat [TS]

down a room like all right we have this [TS]

  great Indiana Jones nugget [TS]

what can we put around it to make sure [TS]

that everybody will come see it and make [TS]

it the blockbuster of the summer I don't [TS]

know you know I I at the risk of of [TS]

being pelted to death by all other [TS]

righteous geeks around I I don't think [TS]

  that's I don't think it's that bad [TS]

the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull I think [TS]

that it i think it suffers because of [TS]

first officer it's a Steven Spielberg [TS]

movie and doesn't you know isn't [TS]

spectacularly put together it's with its [TS]

fine it suffers because it's part of [TS]

this series that's beloved and has these [TS]

two movies especially the people that [TS]

are really really good and it's not as [TS]

good as anything maybe it's you know [TS]

it's better than the temple doom I think [TS]

I don't know if I agree with that high [TS]

well this is what I'm saying is I i [TS]

think and i think the parts of it that [TS]

are actually pretty good i think i think [TS]

maybe they're big mistake was that that [TS]

the premise that George Lucas came up [TS]

with with crystal skull was literally we [TS]

you know these are movies that are about [TS]

the genre of movie that was popular at [TS]

the time and so that the first three [TS]

movies are really in this you know [TS]

adventure cereal style and so with time [TS]

having moved on he decided that this is [TS]

going to be more like a fifties Cold War [TS]

  sci-fi movie [TS]

and I'm not sure that that is a good fit [TS]

with Indiana Jones told her because [TS]

you're forced into the pushing the time [TS]

forward because of the fact that your [TS]

stars are from a certain age and so that [TS]

necessitates a a shift in what we get to [TS]

talk about and I didn't even mind having [TS]

the you know the Communists replace the [TS]

Russians replace the Nazis you know that [TS]

I think they're perfectly good foil for [TS]

that sort of thing but there was the [TS]

whole i agree that the the thing i [TS]

always love with the the supernatural [TS]

was evident but often kind of vague it's [TS]

opaque it's not come directly out and [TS]

stated i mean i don't know the the [TS]

implication seems it has a much depth or [TS]

touch in the in the Last Crusade and [TS]

rays lost ark but it does not in Kingdom [TS]

of the Crystal Skull we're really is [TS]

just your beaten over the head with the [TS]

fact that her taking your aliens and [TS]

they have a spaceship in Mexico and and [TS]

then to me that is it takes away the the [TS]

any need for speculation or discussion [TS]

we're not sitting around talking about [TS]

you know we talked about is Indiana [TS]

Jones and moreover sitting around [TS]

talking about whether or not they're [TS]

aliens you know having an action [TS]

sequence in the big room full of boxes [TS]

from the first movie i thought was a [TS]

kind of funny and bold choice it does [TS]

make me feel kind of queasy because [TS]

they're going back over territory that [TS]

  it cheapens it [TS]

yeah which is a little unfortunate [TS]

because that is one of the great moments [TS]

that we all agreed in the first podcast [TS]

we did that last shot [TS]

that's one of the best last shots of a [TS]

movie ever yeah that mocks receding into [TS]

the building the giant building full of [TS]

boxes with who knows what other secrets [TS]

and to go back to the well they're [TS]

lessens the impact of that and that is [TS]

unfortunate but i just-i I think we risk [TS]

as fans of a of anything the becoming [TS]

the the kind of jaded cynical people who [TS]

say well then they try to do another one [TS]

and it's dark and we you know that's [TS]

what everybody says about the prequels [TS]

for star wars and that's what everybody [TS]

says about the Kingdom of the Crystal [TS]

Skull maybe put me right to it may be [TS]

true it may it may absolutely be true [TS]

but I I have to at least question a [TS]

little bit because I I thought as an as [TS]

an action movie a summer blockbuster [TS]

action movie kingdom of the crystal [TS]

skull was fine i don't actually have you [TS]

seen it again i I've only seen it the [TS]

one time but i have the blue right now [TS]

yeah i've also only see the one time and [TS]

  I [TS]

don't think that I'm in a hurry to go [TS]

see it again which is even with temple [TS]

of doom i watch that every once in [TS]

awhile because it's not just about is a [TS]

good movie it's about what is it what is [TS]

it due to your memory of your perception [TS]

of these other things that our beloved [TS]

  and I think there's I think there's some [TS]

  I think that's a stronger argument [TS]

against it a stronger argument against [TS]

the Star Wars prequels than their actual [TS]

quality as movies and whether they work [TS]

as movies for other people because you [TS]

know in some ways it's really more about [TS]

your memories and your fondness for the [TS]

for the this thing that you grew up with [TS]

and you and that you love and if that [TS]

stuff gets rewritten I mean I said this [TS]

about um the third alien movie which I [TS]

begins executing the alien movies so I [TS]

actually haven't seen me there really be [TS]

  okay I'll just that [TS]

yeah aliens it was aliens really great [TS]

taught kind of more horror sci-fi movie [TS]

aliens is a James Cameron movie and it's [TS]

  a it's a huge action spectacle they're [TS]

  both great at it [TS]

the goal in in the in the second movie [TS]

in aliens is a triply Sigourney Weaver [TS]

is trying to save the people on this [TS]

planet especially this little girl that [TS]

they find Newt and they want to save her [TS]

and that's you know it's a big deal that [TS]

at the end of that movie again spoiler [TS]

alerts ignore the river doesn't die at [TS]

the end of aliens she saves SI States a [TS]

little girl and few other people and [TS]

they escaped on the spaceship from this [TS]

planet that's covered with aliens the [TS]

the third alien movie begins with a [TS]

scene where they wake Sigourney Weaver [TS]

up she's landed somewhere and they say [TS]

yeah everybody else is dead but you're [TS]

alive and and the problem with that is [TS]

that it's basically a big f you to all [TS]

of people who liked the previous movie [TS]

which is everybody who would see a [TS]

sequel to the previous movie and that's [TS]

how i feel about crystal skull and I [TS]

feel about the prequels it's more than [TS]

it offends me because it's trying on my [TS]

memories of like what would happen to [TS]

Indiana Jones later then it is maybe [TS]

offending me by being a movie that's [TS]

mediocre there's an element of tone [TS]

deafness to it i think because as you [TS]

  say you are you [TS]

the thing that's great about reading [TS]

series or seeing series of movies i [TS]

think is feeling like to a certain [TS]

extent you're being rewarded for your [TS]

continued viewing in the same way the [TS]

television shows one of the things I [TS]

like about watching a long serial on [TS]

television is that you get rewarded as [TS]

to things that are callbacks to previous [TS]

episodes or things that you already [TS]

learned all right that's interesting [TS]

because you know last season these two [TS]

characters have this interchange and [TS]

that's rewarding and so going into [TS]

something which seems to just throw that [TS]

all out the window is kind of tone deaf [TS]

from the point of view of creator saying [TS]

that didn't matter that was not [TS]

  important [TS]

nothing that you just saw you wasted [TS]

your time or your mind filled in the [TS]

blanks in a very different way and it [TS]

was better when it was all just a matter [TS]

of you know you could imagine what [TS]

Indiana Jones's future life or his past [TS]

life I mean that's why when Last Crusade [TS]

came out I i wanted to see more about [TS]

like him at home in in indiana jones at [TS]

home at the University and well yes what [TS]

was like sweaters just like snow [TS]

justjust more of that because it's so [TS]

brief and raiders right but at the same [TS]

time youyou there's always a risk that [TS]

it's gonna be something that you didn't [TS]

want to actually see because your mental [TS]

impression of what it might be is much [TS]

  more [TS]

  well it's a it's a it's a it's a [TS]

schrödinger's capping it can be all [TS]

those things that those right but as [TS]

soon as its as soon as that box is [TS]

opened its defined oh yeah and you split [TS]

between watching the people or 12 people [TS]

  who [TS]

oh I only want to see anyone he's in the [TS]

hat when he's out and about and the [TS]

people who oh I would like to see more [TS]

  about his home life [TS]

yes what he cooks for dinner yeah [TS]

exactly what things what crash is [TS]

currently happening in his classroom we [TS]

haven't done an episode about battle [TS]

battlestar galactica yet but just to [TS]

mention it here i know a lot of people [TS]

really disappointed in the ending of [TS]

that show but I i find that Lex I'm only [TS]

i finished the first season there you [TS]

know spoiler i'll try not to spoil it [TS]

what I'll say is I think the end the way [TS]

that show ended is if you watch from the [TS]

beginning one of the very serious [TS]

possibilities of how it was going to end [TS]

and I think the reaction a lot of people [TS]

had to it was because they were able to [TS]

it was that schrödinger's cat thing [TS]

they were able to think that it was [TS]

going to end in a different way and kind [TS]

of not be emphasized the parts that were [TS]

like that that part of the story I'm not [TS]

that interested in I kind of don't buy [TS]

that kind of deep prioritize that and [TS]

believe that there was going to be an [TS]

ending that fulfilled what they thought [TS]

the show was about and and for me I [TS]

always thought that the show is going to [TS]

end the way it did [TS]

  actually so i wasn't i wasn't [TS]

disappointed by it because I knew that's [TS]

where they were going i felt that but I [TS]

totally understand that somebody else [TS]

you know your expectations are different [TS]

and at the end you have to make a choice [TS]

and it can collapse the wider than a dad [TS]

and I said account i had a conversation [TS]

last night about lost about the ending [TS]

of loss which I think falls into a [TS]

similar scenario where some people were [TS]

really disappointed I was will do that [TS]

  episode 2 [TS]

yeah well I was not and I was having a [TS]

discussion but I'm the most and I think [TS]

that episode was great last episode but [TS]

but there's a chance there is an issue [TS]

of this idea that you know you have to [TS]

have a payoff and at some point people [TS]

are going to be disappointed to find [TS]

Indiana Jones on the island at the end [TS]

you may not have understood that [TS]

  refugees in a box [TS]

yes he may be alive or dead yeah well [TS]

this has been great talking to you guys [TS]

about this movie series which we really [TS]

love parts of and don't apparently love [TS]

other parts up and land at least have [TS]

seen all of Iraq's what you are [TS]

suggesting when I watch it down i should [TS]

only watch the first 10 minutes of the [TS]

second 1i when I would start i watch the [TS]

first movie in the third movie and I [TS]

wish they'd watch watch temple do do it [TS]

don't watch it with the dogs for the [TS]

kids know but you know watch it to know [TS]

what it is and then know that the third [TS]

movie is better so that leaves you get [TS]

through that today and I wasn't a good [TS]

you know okay well at least there was [TS]

gonna be better and if you want to see a [TS]

man and hide in the refrigerator to [TS]

survive a nuclear test then watch the [TS]

enforcement honestly I think the fridge [TS]

thing not having seen the movie is is [TS]

Spielberg finally getting to have the [TS]

refrigerator scene he wanted originally [TS]

when he was working with the metas on [TS]

back to the future the original time [TS]

machine was supposed to be a [TS]

refrigerator but they got worried the [TS]

kids would see the movie and hidin [TS]

frigerator to travel time and and I so I [TS]

think he just wanted to get his [TS]

refrigerator stead with that play of [TS]

kids trying to hide in DeLoreans yeah [TS]

  that was much worse [TS]

and on that note I want to thank my gas [TS]

for being in this very special live [TS]

episode of the uncomfortable Dan Morgan [TS]

thank you very much thank you Jason Lex [TS]

Friedman see the movie adult see the [TS]

movies answer Nicole well thank you as [TS]

always thank you and thanks to everybody [TS]

at singleton who is hanging out and one [TS]

of those rare times when we have a live [TS]

studio audience and they haven't booted [TS]

off yet so I think it's time to say [TS]

goodbye thanks to you guys in the [TS]

audience and thanks for listening to be [TS]

  comfortable [TS]
