The Incomparable

110: Cyborg Cowboy

not the most important element of humor [TS]

  is [TS]

the incomparable podcasts number 110 [TS]

  october twenty ground [TS]

welcome back everybody to the [TS]

incompetent podcast I'm your host Jason [TS]

smell and in this episode we're going to [TS]

be talking about the just-concluded [TS]

first half of the latest season of [TS]

doctor who which is no spit it split in [TS]

half with part ever gonna fall which [TS]

just finished another part airing in the [TS]

spring after the Christmas special bc [TS]

Doctor Who joining me to discuss this [TS]

interesting 5 episode mini season are [TS]

  Glenn fleischmann hi Colin [TS]

hello there hello I also hear Dan Morgan [TS]

  hi [TS]

hey what's up a wow yeah [TS]

hey well I was good we'll get some cig I [TS]

did more in our garbage truck driver [TS]

also joining us is the ever pleasant [TS]

  Scott McNulty hi Scott [TS]

hello it's nice that you also watch [TS]

television and don't just read books [TS]

sometimes i do both at the same time [TS]

  that's crazy that's crazy [TS]

it's madness and of course he would not [TS]

dare to be missed on this episode it's [TS]

  john siracusa hi John [TS]

we're doing Dalek impressions on this [TS]

one or not I just want to know how [TS]

excited I should be we can we should do [TS]

  Rory impressions [TS]

I'm doing my weeping angel impression [TS]

right now okay less excited by the [TS]

moment and and to be fair he starts at a [TS]

  pretty low level seven [TS]

yeah funny about that i'm only excited [TS]

when you're not looking at me huh [TS]

john is a Weeping Angel of joy that's [TS]

  good I like that [TS]

um so we did a flash podcast about the [TS]

first episode of this 5 episode set [TS]

which was the asylum of the daleks so [TS]

you can look that one up [TS]

we we did that and and spend a about now [TS]

we're talking about it so I thought we [TS]

would go through the other episodes [TS]

unless there's somebody out there who's [TS]

got a UH another axe to grind about [TS]

asylum of the daleks I thought we move [TS]

on and talk about the other four [TS]

episodes i hearing no grinding i will [TS]

  move on so the [TS]

second episode and in the this mini [TS]

season was the literally titled [TS]

  dinosaurs on a spaceship [TS]

I if you don't remember which episode [TS]

this was it's the one with the dinosaurs [TS]

on a spaceship had to recap after that [TS]

we had they're all all these uh forward [TS]

titles there was a town called mercy [TS]

which is the Western there was the power [TS]

of three which is the story about the [TS]

invasion of boxes and then we had the [TS]

angels take manhattan which aired like [TS]

most recently underwent the muppets did [TS]

it didn't we talk about haha i want to [TS]

start with dinosaurs on a spaceship I I [TS]

  am I i thought this was a clunker I I [TS]

didn't like this one but there were [TS]

dinosaurs and they're on a spaceship [TS]

Nefertiti was there for no particular [TS]

reason for no reason and that and some [TS]

some dude who was like a an adventure [TS]

dude it was it was a Lestrade yeah way [TS]

that it was inspector Lister that was on [TS]

a spaceship with Dinosaurs i was to say [TS]

they're the the only thing that I really [TS]

thought was the most redeeming thing [TS]

about this episode was I really love for [TS]

  his dad [TS]

oh yeah you think that's awesome I just [TS]

what a great what a great piece of [TS]

casting and what a great i mean he may [TS]

be my favorite thing about this entire [TS]

little mini season i have to say i just [TS]

i really enjoyed him I i entered into [TS]

like roses moms with background context [TS]

you reminded me of wolf actually which [TS]

was another one of my favorite [TS]

  characters lead [TS]

yeah no it was um that yeah he was that [TS]

he was really the only redeeming thing [TS]

in this episode I thought I thought it [TS]

was a I in fact in some ways the worst [TS]

of the Russell T Davis era [TS]

let's take a high concept that we know [TS]

is sure to be sure to please the kids [TS]

and and honestly dinosaurs wander ships [TS]

yeah and honestly dinosaurs on a [TS]

spaceship might have worked as that core [TS]

story but it isn't just that right it's [TS]

about 15 other things poured in here [TS]

with this at some point in the future on [TS]

earth and the Indian subcontinent is now [TS]

  in charge of [TS]

of Earth space defenses they're just in [TS]

charge of space which is a nice touch [TS]

and apparently they make nuclear weapons [TS]

  that once locked on [TS]

there's nothing you can ever do again [TS]

because you always want as with the [TS]

assignment the Daleks you always want to [TS]

make sure that once you've triggered [TS]

  something [TS]

there's never an eye on any [TS]

circumstances we turn off because you [TS]

never want to do that as we know [TS]

surely even if you want to do it later [TS]

you still don't understand call me [TS]

Shirley and there's Nefertiti and [TS]

there's and there's the adventure guy [TS]

and why are they there and then they get [TS]

Rory and Amy and Rory's dad which is [TS]

  funny [TS]

now we're not mentioning is nothing [TS]

obvious we're missing here too which is [TS]

we have to harry potter actors in the [TS]

same episode which I was kind of looking [TS]

forward to and they never gonna be the [TS]

same scene together just about very [TS]

little because i love i think to the [TS]

best characters in the harry potter [TS]

franchise are in fact the visitor easily [TS]

mr. Weasley and the on argus filch i [TS]

think is a great character in the book [TS]

he's a great actress the fellow who play [TS]

that was it a Solomon in the episode [TS]

his name is david john bradley i have [TS]

looked up he reminded me of I anybody [TS]

remember that episode the most the most [TS]

toys that episode of The Star Trek The [TS]

Next Generation here this yeah well as a [TS]

daisy his page oh yes where data is [TS]

collected Solomon in this actually [TS]

reminded me of that character is a he's [TS]

a guy with a spaceship and he's really [TS]

just a thief and he's he has no [TS]

  redeeming qualities and what's [TS]

interesting about this episode is that [TS]

in the end the doctor basically just [TS]

kills him which that when he's [TS]

completely defenseless and he's an awful [TS]

guy who's killed lots of people and [TS]

maybe even made the Silurians extinct [TS]

but a kind of a kind of extreme and [TS]

makes you wish for the days of you know [TS]

the doctor who was just so clever that [TS]

they could come up with the perfect the [TS]

perfect punishment that was worse than [TS]

death right in something or like to [TS]

something really appropriate that but [TS]

like that's something that's clever as [TS]

opposed to it was very crude we're [TS]

getting out of here in your debt as [TS]

opposed to the you know look he tries to [TS]

save dive Ross right over and over again [TS]

and you're like the average submitted [TS]

the dollar Alex that what they call the [TS]

inside the Daleks and that's despite [TS]

habitat yeah I and he won't save this [TS]

guy is just a voracious sort of pain in [TS]

the ass and killed that killed thousands [TS]

  of civilians [TS]

Davros is responsible for you know [TS]

billions of deaths and whatever you're [TS]

like the threshold has changed when the [TS]

doctor just says all right we're gonna [TS]

touch this thing and we're gone and your [TS]

stock always expect the doctor to appeal [TS]

to the better angels of our nature and [TS]

in this he does for shoveling and and [TS]

honestly this is yes I this is actually [TS]

another russell t davies thing I wanted [TS]

to bring up where I feel like this this [TS]

whole mini season felt like the david [TS]

tennant specials era to me where these [TS]

standalone stories there's no real [TS]

ongoing plot its leading what's the only [TS]

ongoing plot is that you know it's [TS]

leading to a conclusion where actors [TS]

leave the show but otherwise not up if [TS]

there's not a real plot reason for it [TS]

which is unfortunate is very contrived [TS]

yeah otherwise we-we're just advancing [TS]

toward an ending and then in in the one [TS]

thing that was kind of interesting about [TS]

the the that era with the with david [TS]

tennant was that there was this whole [TS]

talk about how he was losing his [TS]

connection to humanity by not traveling [TS]

with a regular companion and so that [TS]

keeps coming up here except of course he [TS]

keeps traveling with amy and rory so it [TS]

kind of doesn't make any sense and yet [TS]

you have this whole it really which [TS]

seemed to insert it was like you must [TS]

always travel with someone or you're [TS]

gonna you're kind of losing it but I [TS]

never felt like it was real I felt that [TS]

it was just contrived it was not as well [TS]

executed as the david tennant era where [TS]

to me that it that contains that arc [TS]

contains one of the most just chillin [TS]

and depressing scenes in Doctor Who but [TS]

well executed which is the scene where [TS]

he rescues at alliant from Mars [TS]

oh yes back and she kills herself right [TS]

because he screwed over the timeline and [TS]

that that was effective that worked [TS]

it was really really wrenching to watch [TS]

that and especially that scene where he [TS]

realizes basically what he's done and [TS]

you don't get that emotional gravitas [TS]

here I wanted it I wanted to see it you [TS]

don't get it if you have a doctor just [TS]

have some missiles blow a guy up because [TS]

  he doesn't like them [TS]

um it reduces it to the to the cartoon [TS]

hero yeah it used to do the thing where [TS]

like you said earlier find the [TS]

punishment it's worse than death what he [TS]

actually used to do is like the [TS]

equivalent of like the Time Lord shabbat [TS]

device where it's like well I can't kill [TS]

  you [TS]

but by failing to act in this manner i [TS]

will and i will cause this lever to fall [TS]

over which will cause the oven to turn [TS]

on you know what I mean like he used to [TS]

do that which I thought was a cheat so [TS]

I'm glad to see him kill somebody but [TS]

like the man said that I know what they [TS]

were going for but they didn't get it [TS]

because he'd always traveling alone [TS]

off-camera and we didn't see that using [TS]

the companions are in part is shabbos [TS]

  Coy's it [TS]

yeah well no they don't do the work for [TS]

me time to do those sometimes yeah [TS]

sometimes it's just it's just physics [TS]

that does the work for that's pretty [TS]

  funny [TS]

I can't kill you but all these people [TS]

and travel with my or perhaps the random [TS]

circumstances of nature will be a shame [TS]

if something happened anyway I thought [TS]

this was i had enough if somebody who [TS]

wants to speak up for it but I i just i [TS]

do I this one will speak for the [TS]

dinosaur who will I mean no one they're [TS]

  all dead [TS]

I like the print the fundamental premise [TS]

of lies a ship why is there a ship with [TS]

dinosaurs and there's like if there were [TS]

Silurians maybe they would take the the [TS]

extinct soon to be extinct races away [TS]

and and try to take them somewhere else [TS]

so that was kind of fun and interesting [TS]

and yet completely squandered on all of [TS]

  this other junk [TS]

well I'm sort of PE i'm sort of ppl tell [TS]

you this is a metal thing without [TS]

talking another episode yet is I'm sort [TS]

of peeved about how many great concepts [TS]

that were this season that just were [TS]

pissed away basically and this is one of [TS]

them you're like okay we have the slurry [TS]

and set we have the doctor saying I've [TS]

never had a gang before going to try [TS]

again you're like okay you know you're [TS]

right there's rarely a time except that [TS]

season enters got a bunch of people it's [TS]

a silly premise you know it they [TS]

actually sort of sold it because we've [TS]

seen the Silurians multiple times we [TS]

know they come back they know [TS]

resuscitate on earth at some point from [TS]

last season of the season before really [TS]

where we know they live will cohabitate [TS]

with humans and blah blah we know all [TS]

  this [TS]

the Silurians recurring element of the [TS]

universe and he's like oh well we found [TS]

a bad cube this is also one of the first [TS]

Doctor Who's I remember where they can [TS]

talk to a computer it does things they [TS]

  want it to [TS]

it seemed very Star Trek I'm not what we [TS]

call any episode in which they have to [TS]

do some weird hand waving like computer [TS]

where are things here they are [TS]

what happened there are a couple of [TS]

using i did i was amused by the Amy like [TS]

wasn't in that scene where she likes [TS]

starts typing on the computer like well [TS]

everything the doctor to start pressing [TS]

  buttons until it happen [TS]

I mean there there were there are a [TS]

couple of reading lines here in there [TS]

  and stuff like that [TS]

yeah amy was used effectively because [TS]

this is the episode where he was like I [TS]

know how to do this now and that was [TS]

that was again if there's a story arc [TS]

here it's the fact that amy has now been [TS]

travelling with the doctor so long that [TS]

she can do his job which is very much [TS]

like sort of how Rose ended up at the [TS]

end before she left and and that's kind [TS]

of a rite of passage almost like once [TS]

once you're no longer really the [TS]

companion you're actually being the [TS]

doctor it's time for you to go because [TS]

there's you know that that's the end you [TS]

you've progressed all the way and and [TS]

that was good because she's very capable [TS]

she she's able to do you know to do [TS]

everything and tap into the computer and [TS]

do every everything she needs to do i [TS]

should also say that mitchell and webb [TS]

the great comedy team is harder wandered [TS]

here in this ridiculous like robots who [TS]

are like robot children robot babysitter [TS]

children things it was it's really [TS]

disappointing second the Doctor Who [TS]

universe needs to invest in better [TS]

robotic design because every robot we [TS]

meet is just completely worthless [TS]

yeah I guess that's the the overall [TS]

overarching message of Doctor Who which [TS]

is robots are our rubbish they also i [TS]

think they lost the opportunity to do [TS]

some dress park stuff they have the [TS]

Raptors comments like let's get some [TS]

guns and shoot at them and will be 500 [TS]

for no reason we're standing here [TS]

fending off like eight of them or [TS]

whatever it was just like whatever yeah [TS]

no it'sit's um I I think Moffat a flaw [TS]

and you know you're gonna have a flaw I [TS]

guess having a flower you where you try [TS]

to stuff way too many ideas in an [TS]

episode I guess is not the worst flaw [TS]

you could have but I feel that again and [TS]

again that he takes these you know it [TS]

it's almost like he's just got to his to [TS]

again to his credit he's got like a [TS]

giant that of ideas and and there's a [TS]

tube that runs out of the VAT and he's [TS]

got a spray gun and he just sprays the [TS]

ideas and this episode was written by [TS]

Martha but it has that same feel of like [TS]

I i will likely written I feel like his [TS]

style I feel like his style encourages [TS]

this spray guns just batter of ideas and [TS]

and and David dinosaurs on a spaceship [TS]

  again full of ideas [TS]

none of them really hanging together and [TS]

none of them fully realized that the one [TS]

thing i did like was the Compendium that [TS]

  Solomon had [TS]

which was the value of everything in [TS]

time and space that sort of useful like [TS]

a you know a comic-book god it's like oh [TS]

I found another 40 well she's with the [TS]

firm at our take her own then and that [TS]

was of course just a an excuse to have [TS]

it scanned the doctor and he's not in it [TS]

and it all he's deleted himself from all [TS]

  the databases shocking [TS]

alright well there it is so we move on [TS]

  these yes [TS]

yeah okay so let's talk about the [TS]

Western I kind of like parts of it maybe [TS]

  that's cuz I'm a sucker for westerns I'm [TS]

again the plot stuff is kind of I mean [TS]

this is going to be a recurring theme [TS]

where sometimes that the redeeming [TS]

things in it or not the plot [TS]

yeah that has been the to the case for [TS]

the entire season is no theme of Doctor [TS]

Who the show could be yeah but they've [TS]

gotten away with it better before you [TS]

keep to you keep telling me that every [TS]

time I complain about the plot like well [TS]

doctor who isn't really about your blog [TS]

and also because those times you can get [TS]

away with that there's time where it's [TS]

an awkwardly detrimental in here i think [TS]

for my my part my problem here was just [TS]

that this one felt way too predictable [TS]

like you can kind of figure out where [TS]

the whole thing was going with the [TS]

doctor in about five minutes right like [TS]

oh he's he did something terrible right [TS]

and now he's here to do a tone matter at [TS]

least it had many had that old star trek [TS]

feel in the sense that was trying to [TS]

come up with a real moral quandary where [TS]

you know you said you need to save this [TS]

guy but he's actually criminal and you [TS]

can save the village by turning him in [TS]

and having him die but you know you sort [TS]

of you can't do that you need to you you [TS]

need to be better than that and that [TS]

accepted it all got kind of messy and [TS]

ben browder who is great yeah the wasted [TS]

again another wasted actor he was great [TS]

in that little bit was great and then he [TS]

sacrifices himself and then the guy ends [TS]

up killing himself at the end anyway so [TS]

why did he even bother [TS]

why didn't the guy just let him just ah [TS]

you know I gotta say the plot this [TS]

doctor who episode was so it was just [TS]

very thin in that the guy wasn't really [TS]

threatening the town like you didn't [TS]

feel like it felt like the cyborgs gonna [TS]

get this guy kill him and you're done [TS]

and the town will be fine and there was [TS]

no sense that there was a menace beyond [TS]

that which is what makes science fiction [TS]

great we're like oh we're going to feed [TS]

the Virgin's the volcano in the volcano [TS]

  will erupt [TS]

oh no the volcanoes talking Iraq [TS]

you guys made the wrong moral choice and [TS]

now you're gonna pay for it like no no [TS]

if you make the right royal choice here [TS]

you'll be fine just move on the with [TS]

that you'll get past it and that could [TS]

have been done better because they do [TS]

have that moment where like you know the [TS]

the sideboard goes into the church and [TS]

everyone's like no it's gonna kill us [TS]

and it's like now in these people are [TS]

the people i'm looking for like you're [TS]

like he said he was gonna kill them all [TS]

and he doesn't let the hell yeah it [TS]

  doesn't make any sense [TS]

yeah but the Renee but we kind of knew [TS]

that we already knew that was gonna [TS]

happen in some way like i don't think [TS]

anybody was genuinely scared he was this [TS]

sad cyborg a sense of I mean like I [TS]

think but i think i love that I love the [TS]

  production design of it [TS]

yes I mean I like the look of it again [TS]

there are some great scenes in a couple [TS]

great interactions ben browder is [TS]

another great like you know guests are [TS]

that they again waste but like there's [TS]

all it everything he keeps putting all [TS]

these ingredients into a bowl and mixing [TS]

up my god yeah that looks good that's [TS]

going in all that was good that going in [TS]

and it comes out well with like a pile [TS]

  of blah [TS]

it's disappointing and a spaceship [TS]

shaped like an egg yeah they ran out of [TS]

money on that space oh my god it's like [TS]

generic uh had Jonathan winters in here [TS]

this whole thing where he's chasing the [TS]

isaac character the sheriff and Rory [TS]

right and his displayed as the arnold [TS]

schwarzenegger has no percentage chance [TS]

at happiness and life is 34 whatever you [TS]

know retreat and then the next moment [TS]

he's out trying to shoot and kill them [TS]

and then he's called off by something [TS]

else and then there's the rocks you're [TS]

like why not just set up like we know [TS]

which we want to be any collateral [TS]

damage and so is he has overrides of [TS]

innocence or spare but he managed to [TS]

work around its programming so I as the [TS]

his creator is no longer innocent even [TS]

though we're not at war i mean one line [TS]

instead is like those rocks we can't [TS]

sleep over the rocks now we can step [TS]

over the rocks but with rocks that we [TS]

don't know but he could somebody who it [TS]

was he set up that [TS]

ya found ya but which still doesn't make [TS]

any sense I don't understand why I mean [TS]

there's definitely can't just walk in [TS]

right he should have just walked he is a [TS]

cyborg designed to kill people i don't [TS]

understand why he doesn't just walk into [TS]

  the town [TS]

no one's gonna stop it was bad about it [TS]

and shoot the guy but that that that [TS]

could have been so good though is the [TS]

thing like there could have been such a [TS]

thing where you have like the town like [TS]

you know oh we're going to surround this [TS]

  guy with innocent people [TS]

yeah because we believe like that to me [TS]

would have been much more compelling is [TS]

if they actually had you know some sort [TS]

of reason why he would not like go and [TS]

do this the place aren't important per [TS]

se right they often it's the it's the [TS]

show is fun to watch and the plots are [TS]

mechanism to watch the sort of fun [TS]

interaction more so than is really [TS]

paying close attention the plot but when [TS]

you I i stopped playing a pinch of the [TS]

plot and I ignored or something silly if [TS]

  it's consistent and well-constructed [TS]

it's a machinery that grinds away and [TS]

surprises me at times with a certain [TS]

kind of unexpected moral dilemma or [TS]

other no scientific thing comes up this [TS]

interesting the problem this season [TS]

including this episode is there's too [TS]

much time with the gears grind together [TS]

you're like oh come on i don't want to [TS]

care about that you're making me care [TS]

about that you got a plot that's even [TS]

not serviceable is the problem right if [TS]

the plot is serviceable you can get away [TS]

with it but I in the cases where is [TS]

actively being like now wait why is no [TS]

you get you get the shovel where plot [TS]

where we're really there's so much snow [TS]

shoveled into the plot that they don't [TS]

it doesn't actually lineup or connector [TS]

makes sense but there's a lot of it and [TS]

I think it's dropped beneath all of our [TS]

siracusa thresholds you know it's like [TS]

maybe John just does this all the time [TS]

and like now it's a point of the final [TS]

fantasy you know when I have been when [TS]

they have the ark seasons were like you [TS]

know the first season with matt smith [TS]

there was an ark to that season right [TS]

with on the ark ones that the reason i'm [TS]

able to get and stay engaged with those [TS]

despite the ridiculous possibly have [TS]

something to hold onto like old is a [TS]

narc they're like they're trying to say [TS]

is the girl who waited and this thing [TS]

going on to something with the TARDIS [TS]

and then this little Pete explore piece [TS]

of in the cracks like that's silly but [TS]

it draws you through the season and then [TS]

you can kind of push the stuff out but [TS]

the season had no arc so all you're left [TS]

with is that other stuff that you used [TS]

to ignore while you concentrate on at [TS]

least I used to ignore what I [TS]

concentrate on the ark stuff because if [TS]

you think about their plots their [TS]

  nonsensical another they undercut [TS]

themselves because he deliberately set [TS]

out to make the standalone season in [TS]

some ways by taking out all the stuff [TS]

that alludes to the arc they have like [TS]

probably like 5-10 minutes of extra time [TS]

in every episode just like this before [TS]

but up in there to make their nobody's [TS]

missing anything you can do stay good [TS]

standalone episodes i mean their whole [TS]

shows based on good standing out you [TS]

know there's no reason we can't do like [TS]

blink was basically a standalone [TS]

episodes like me there's no reason you [TS]

can't do it well agree they read it [TS]

  didn't know that's that's what's [TS]

frustrating as they set out to do a [TS]

season without an arc except for us [TS]

knowing that this was the last season [TS]

with the companions and they wound up [TS]

it's like I think they just let the [TS]

plant machinery is so clunky it you do [TS]

get the sense that the you know again [TS]

and I i could take us back to Russell [TS]

Davis because he used to make these [TS]

pronouncements all the time during his [TS]

seasons which was you know you have this [TS]

tendency toward the high concept and [TS]

it's like well the kids will be playing [TS]

on the schoolyard like okay that's fine [TS]

uh done well the adults will enjoy it [TS]

and the kids will enjoy it too i have no [TS]

doubt that you know the kids in England [TS]

were doing more Cowboys stuff after the [TS]

cowboy episode aired and talking about [TS]

dinosaurs and space ships after that [TS]

episode aired that's fine as it goes but [TS]

what else is there and you know in this [TS]

in this episode there was an attempt [TS]

there's something inside this episode [TS]

about mercy right town called mercy and [TS]

about how you know in opposition to the [TS]

dinosaur episode that's it there's that [TS]

there's this attempt to do this moral [TS]

quandary about you protect this guy [TS]

who's not innocent but you've given him [TS]

your word that you'll protect him and [TS]

can somebody be changed and can somebody [TS]

  be redeemed [TS]

ok that's in there but it's executed so [TS]

poorly and in the end it's completely [TS]

messed up because he just leaves to go [TS]

back to his little oval spaceship and [TS]

kill himself and you know it's just ok [TS]

all the parts are here to do a good [TS]

story and then it just falls apart it's [TS]

it straight well here's the thing that [TS]

kills me to is I thought there was great [TS]

the jail tops conversation between Jax [TS]

and the doctor is actually quite [TS]

wonderful with Jackson sort of almost [TS]

teasing him almost saying like look you [TS]

know and I expect the doctors say no I [TS]

have that quandary and my quandary was [TS]

instead of creating killing machines i [TS]

  became the killing machine [TS]

I am that cyborg I killed everyone in my [TS]

race and entire the race and still [TS]

living with that and I had to do it [TS]

again and then I had to kill that race [TS]

again and again and again so I've been [TS]

where you are and so how does he have a [TS]

moral superiority I thought that's it [TS]

felt like they forgot the entire [TS]

mythology of it just like an asylum of [TS]

the daleks where they forgot that a [TS]

memory had a child in this case you [TS]

forgot it's like the doctor killed [TS]

everyone and he became that killer in [TS]

order to prevent the universe will be [TS]

destroyed he already made the moral [TS]

choice and he's not engaging a minute [TS]

  you're [TS]

company just felt lazy to have that in [TS]

front of us you know those school kids [TS]

  in the playground [TS]

I'd I don't think any school kids are [TS]

playing anybody from this episode and I [TS]

keep school kids more credit miss I mean [TS]

like there are their episodes where it's [TS]

a credit episode the plot makes no sense [TS]

but there's one character that piques [TS]

your interest in that character has [TS]

sparked there's no characters what [TS]

sparked the doctor didn't have that [TS]

stupid robot guy didn't have it like [TS]

there's no equivalent of like textin my [TS]

son was intrigued by the robot cowboy i [TS]

have to say that because you know robot [TS]

cowboy coming through and say he know he [TS]

was he was he was like oh always like [TS]

  the robot cowboy [TS]

so I think there maybe is a little bit [TS]

but it's on that super simple level of [TS]

like what if they were a robot cowboy ok [TS]

  done [TS]

how about a story about the road bike [TS]

and no no we don't have a story but we [TS]

do have a robot you have a row between a [TS]

cyborg we're going to put a hat on him [TS]

will not wear my cowboy for new list [TS]

that's true and that once again not a [TS]

  very good [TS]

cyborg cowboy no nobody and then for the [TS]

last 20 minutes you know that he's gonna [TS]

end up being the sheriff of the town [TS]

  right yeah [TS]

yes and I I don't even think they [TS]

  executed that very well [TS]

no it's like it's like okay so you're [TS]

you're implacable your implacable hatred [TS]

is now gone because everyone you try to [TS]

  kill is dead [TS]

what do you guys like I don't know water [TS]

the desert and blow myself up I have an [TS]

  idea [TS]

this County the sheriff ok ok I killed [TS]

the last one and then surely Charles [TS]

surely trusted after you almost killed [TS]

all of them i'm sure they'll be happy to [TS]

  welcome with open arms [TS]

no one will ever question why there's a [TS]

  robotic a sheriff [TS]

some say he waters those hills even now [TS]

fightin crime scan and face tattoos 11 [TS]

stuff wearing terrible special effects [TS]

on his body battling coyotes uh actually [TS]

that's did the increase in tattoos and [TS]

popular culture in the in the thousands [TS]

caused a series of terrible accidents [TS]

where the robot chair had to kill [TS]

innocent they were going to burning man [TS]

they just were passing through but no [TS]

yeah all right let's uh let's move on to [TS]

the power of three the cube episode I [TS]

you know what I'm gonna speak of in [TS]

defense of this one I like the QB too i [TS]

think i think it was the best episode of [TS]

The Seagull wow you like all of it from [TS]

  until the very [TS]

and I like the cube not all of it not [TS]

all of it I thought again the plot part [TS]

again there's two thirds what makes it [TS]

good is that they're actually characters [TS]

  in this one [TS]

yeah exactly it's interesting all the [TS]

stuff with Rory and Amy and like having [TS]

their other life and going back and [TS]

forth and there's all these cubes [TS]

showing up and everyone's like I don't [TS]

know that's weird like I i like that [TS]

setup like all of that was interesting [TS]

it was funny to see Amy and Rory [TS]

bouncing between their real life and [TS]

their life with the doctor it was funny [TS]

when the doctor had to come and hang out [TS]

with him for a while we just got so [TS]

bored you know and I mean it was an [TS]

interesting dynamic you know the doctor [TS]

almost comes off as like this is an [TS]

increasing thing where the doctor comes [TS]

up is like their kid you know a certain [TS]

extent because you have them as the [TS]

parent figures almost is their [TS]

son-in-law let me ask this [TS]

let me ask this how many people liked [TS]

the first like eighty percent us episode [TS]

everyone liked it yeah yeah yeah it's [TS]

ridiculous the game into cubes actually [TS]

open yeah but it's the end it's like [TS]

running out within the pulp fiction [TS]

suitcase it's like now that's not [TS]

important it's not a problem with [TS]

finding out what's in that black you so [TS]

like dan I will defend this episode and [TS]

I but but first i will say the last 20 [TS]

minutes or so is ridiculous you hit [TS]

literally the doctor goes up to a [TS]

spaceship that was there before but we [TS]

never saw it and then he takes a sonic [TS]

screwdriver out and goes boot and it [TS]

solves the plot and that's it right so [TS]

that that's ridiculous but I liked this [TS]

episode because of the amy and rory [TS]

stuff because of the idea of what what [TS]

what's happening in a companions life [TS]

and it's out of sync there there's some [TS]

nice stuff in here about how they keep [TS]

aging but they keep coming back to where [TS]

they began to their friends are starting [TS]

to wonder why they looked older and [TS]

they're sort of the doctor there's some [TS]

some kind of larger flavored stuff where [TS]

the doctors trying to understand human [TS]

regular life and he and he can't and and [TS]

then the the alien invasion itself is so [TS]

weird and awesome and kind of like a [TS]

like unimportant but just as below the [TS]

radar it's like obvious that it's [TS]

happening and yet nobody cares and that [TS]

the cubes end up being used as flower [TS]

pots and things like that i mean well [TS]

and that's a really impress is the idea [TS]

of like this is a plant that has been [TS]

invaded so many times right everybody so [TS]

boring that nobody cares like see how we [TS]

can see I mean that's a great setup [TS]

they're playing the longest the [TS]

his greatest aliens playing the long [TS]

game it's like sleeper cells while they [TS]

bring in you bring Brian's dad back [TS]

again i love that he's watching the Q [TS]

yeah Q tired time it's day 3 22 no cubed [TS]

us far but he's so earnest that's what's [TS]

great about him as a character they [TS]

should've left the cubes around that's [TS]

what they should have done is like the [TS]

end of this episode okay I'll should [TS]

have ended with no with no resolution [TS]

that would speculation because they then [TS]

you can bring it back which is totally a [TS]

doctor who thing to do would have been [TS]

impossible cell but i agree would have [TS]

  been great [TS]

I kind of like it right for this tended [TS]

and there was no alien invasion [TS]

there's no resolution that would be kind [TS]

of cool or an alien spaceship that is [TS]

like I'd like that UPS of space comment [TS]

like and I did you find our missing [TS]

cubes because we like lost those but [TS]

they didn't even squandered this one [TS]

because like anything remotely hard [TS]

sci-fi thing that little cubes come down [TS]

and then you know they are inexplicable [TS]

whatever you you would have people like [TS]

we're trying to cut into it we blew it [TS]

up with a nuclear bomb we tried to crush [TS]

it we cooked it you are doing little [TS]

  unit units doing that [TS]

yeah you don't like it the in an episode [TS]

where inexplicable cubes come down you [TS]

have to like that's one of the things [TS]

one of the directions you can go as [TS]

someone for you and you can just say if [TS]

I'm were ignoring it someone else is [TS]

feeling that were not but when the [TS]

doctor is there shouldn't he be like [TS]

examining the cubes in some way other [TS]

than looking at it like hit his level of [TS]

Investigation is similar to Rory's dad I [TS]

took it as being that the doctor was was [TS]

actually I didn't think that any of the [TS]

investigation was necessary he was like [TS]

look all we need to do is wait around [TS]

and they'll do something eventually [TS]

they'll try to kill him then we'll [TS]

figure it out its gonna grab a jacket [TS]

strangle that that's a very Doctor Who [TS]

strategy i think is a look I'm the main [TS]

character here I i regenerate and I'm [TS]

protected by the plot so I figured out [TS]

why I've got a magic wand right here [TS]

that I will wave and solve it [TS]

so let's just wait and see what happens [TS]

right and it's like Oh what happens is [TS]

disappointment I like that little aside [TS]

where they're at the the anniversary [TS]

party and then he dragged them away you [TS]

know and they come back [TS]

how long were they got seven weeks you [TS]

know like they've gone off and they have [TS]

a little montage of the the various [TS]

adventures like I was I don't know [TS]

there's a big alien spaceship underneath [TS]

the Savoy Hotel in the frame it you feel [TS]

like you'd rather watch those episodes [TS]

sometimes though like they go off on [TS]

those ones they do it they show one [TS]

  other senior like [TS]

oh you would rather watch that episode [TS]

but yeah but you know if they executed [TS]

that it would be better for 130 years [TS]

population is going to be a heart attack [TS]

because house so terrible was like [TS]

however they said that they were dead [TS]

they were dead for like an hour and they [TS]

all suffered terrible Terry behind [TS]

five-part they got me that part out that [TS]

i was like i was i was texting James [TS]

could have gotten away with that over [TS]

there was like two yeah like 3 34 [TS]

seconds yet lag time Jason they were [TS]

dead the brand so it's so it's so bad [TS]

the area and yet i'll defend this [TS]

episode because again it ended stupidly [TS]

was going to I really enjoyed it up to [TS]

that point I because i love the [TS]

character stuff and it was founded [TS]

charming and and like to John's point [TS]

from earlier which is well if you don't [TS]

have the plot what is left and the [TS]

answer is in many of these episodes not [TS]

much but in this 1i i found it into this [TS]

was to me actually this was the great [TS]

use of Amy and Rory and Rory's dad and I [TS]

wish there had been more of that this [TS]

season because I felt like that you fit [TS]

for this little 5 episode block that [TS]

sort of about saying goodbye to Amy and [TS]

Rory there could have been more of that [TS]

and in fact in some ways this is the [TS]

episode that makes me feel like you know [TS]

sad to say goodbye the amy and read more [TS]

than their final episode because this is [TS]

I would have actually been happy if this [TS]

had been their final episode and a [TS]

resolution had been we're too old for [TS]

  this crap [TS]

yeah we'll stay they made a choice right [TS]

like and i love that the ending the [TS]

actually was good with his father [TS]

yeah so what happens you know what [TS]

happens everybody else travels with you [TS]

and then later on the whole you know [TS]

take care of them because they're not [TS]

gonna give you up you know that to me [TS]

was more had more of that like emotional [TS]

impact yeah he had to be honest as they [TS]

said you know what happens is that thing [TS]

and you're like you think about how many [TS]

campaigns that have been like 20 or 30 [TS]

over the seasons and you like some are [TS]

lost some are you know go on with their [TS]

lives i'm projecting leave in a few of [TS]

them died like yeah i mean the ones that [TS]

is one that don't die don't remember [TS]

because most of them but some of them [TS]

wind up for getting me your brain erased [TS]

  another dimension [TS]

he's got multiple different dimensions [TS]

so let's talk about the angels take [TS]

manhattan which is the the big capital [TS]

  angels take manhattan please [TS]

and a little group and the Daleks take [TS]

staten island haha uh this is the big [TS]

farewell where the weeping angels come [TS]

back and there's a new york city and a [TS]

modern-day very briefly and then we're [TS]

back to thirties New York what is our [TS]

the British obsessed with thirties and [TS]

somebody else I know Scott math naughty [TS]

but you wrote this episode didn't use [TS]

gotta admit I i wrote parts of it and [TS]

you guess which parts there are a lot of [TS]

british actor lot of British actors you [TS]

want to try it out a hard-boiled [TS]

detective accident as well or poorly as [TS]

  they can [TS]

I've got the better be soon as the [TS]

narration came out of like that's a [TS]

British person doing a really bad New [TS]

York acts I know these solar was [TS]

  terrible [TS]

now Mike machine by the way my Christian [TS]

  Americans are available actually [TS]

America's American he was a terrific 11 [TS]

he's an old improv comedian who's on [TS]

whose line is it anyway the British run [TS]

of it and I was in The Groundlings and [TS]

I've seen some terrible films and I [TS]

thought he was fabulous i wanted to see [TS]

much large guy the ritual that mobster [TS]

it was the monster got it right i wanted [TS]

to understand what is point was like the [TS]

idea was he like the tool of the Angels [TS]

like the pond at the Angels Florida and [TS]

sunnah remote so he was he was a [TS]

collector much like once again kiss pho [TS]

and he wanted to get the ball back to [TS]

anything angel Zach for some reason and [TS]

then they being angels can't break down [TS]

  doors [TS]

well that's probably not because if you [TS]

were smart as a lot of locked doors have [TS]

an I max but what does that even have to [TS]

do with the whole like battery far I [TS]

I don't know sherry I again I was so [TS]

  angry [TS]

how did they feed those people for 40 [TS]

years in the hotel room service [TS]

yesterday i'm very good room service is [TS]

close your eyes were coming in with your [TS]

  food [TS]

close your eyes the food appears it's a [TS]

core of interesting ideas here right [TS]

  there's this there's that there's the [TS]

the book thing which is played more for [TS]

Laughs actually than 40 the book is [TS]

telling us our future there was a little [TS]

bit more that i like the idea that the [TS]

Angels if we got this premise of the [TS]

angel send people back in time and they [TS]

feed on the time energy we got that from [TS]

blink so yeah I like the idea that the [TS]

Angels have created a place that they [TS]

didn't stores entirely without you ever [TS]

but you're right the whole idea should [TS]

be that the Angels just sent him back in [TS]

time but this like well now they cheat [TS]

they send you back in time and then they [TS]

go find you back in time they send you [TS]

further back and then may you just kind [TS]

of loop around and you know it was iight [TS]

like someone pointed out in the image am [TS]

just now it's the matrix right that's [TS]

what bothers me about it is like I've [TS]

seen that plot device three or four [TS]

times right like in the last what's the [TS]

corridors look like the matrix to write [TS]

it looks actually like we're neo gets [TS]

his powers and and but I mean it takes [TS]

me we know it is making logical sense [TS]

you send them back once maybe something [TS]

back further there's a point when the [TS]

building doesn't exist and then why do [TS]

you take care of them for 40 years until [TS]

they die you kill them at that point [TS]

they're not nice Psychopaths they're [TS]

Psychopaths so it didn't make it's like [TS]

you need to feed off the energy as they [TS]

grow older the whole body that's part of [TS]

it in a plot point that wasn't added i [TS]

don't know well and it makes them seem [TS]

more scheming and I think they're more [TS]

threatening is just sort of this or Ajax [TS]

exam and that's scarier and like the [TS]

fact that they're like haha now we are [TS]

even planning things like we have having [TS]

charities that will get you blah i mean [TS]

those were created because those were [TS]

not scary this fat little kids that they [TS]

made they I think couldn't help they [TS]

were trying to plan for last or not but [TS]

they're not they're not scary look that [TS]

one scene with the repose of the match [TS]

that was pretty good i like your credit [TS]

and here's the thing to the episode [TS]

drove me insane i watched it twice [TS]

because i want to see if maybe of we [TS]

were looking for the cause all these [TS]

  years [TS]

beside this is what drove me German [TS]

attributed insane and it's my god i yes [TS]

your room service will be there soon [TS]

going ok we're done and actually only 15 [TS]

or something so the thing that drove me [TS]

crazy episode is the invention the [TS]

invention of rules that govern the [TS]

entire universe that we've never been [TS]

told about in the entire can of the show [TS]

and the doctors center space toppings [TS]

that are I know but this is this is [TS]

ridiculous like if you read something or [TS]

you see a gravestone now it is immutable [TS]

and they're fixed points in time which [TS]

has any we've seen things change the [TS]

gravestone in fact changes when Amy goes [TS]

back into the episode it's it's absurd [TS]

energy specialist haha but time can be [TS]

rewritten to which he says yeah I except [TS]

  sometimes not [TS]

yeah exactly what I'm just like why not [TS]

go back to the TARDIS and try to save if [TS]

you read ahead it doesn't suddenly you [TS]

can't fix anything even things that [TS]

aren't that means everything ever [TS]

written in the history book can't be [TS]

changed because people read it except [TS]

dr. you change those things are [TS]

sometimes cause them all the time so it [TS]

irritated the heck out of me that they [TS]

did that they even changed the rules for [TS]

the angels to like the one thing that [TS]

would be the one episode that we like we [TS]

all like blink and I said well guess [TS]

what we're gonna change the angel rules [TS]

and angels used to be anyone is looking [TS]

at them they can attack the new rule is [TS]

if you're not looking at them they can [TS]

attack you but other people can be [TS]

looking at them which makes no sense [TS]

w-wait know even if they framed [TS]

incredibly carefully i watch the second [TS]

time because i thought they were doing [TS]

that and it's what they're what they're [TS]

maintaining is that is that you it is [TS]

like when the NEC name is blocking the [TS]

line of sight to the eyes for the angels [TS]

she's not blocking that line of sight [TS]

she is they set up the stage they're [TS]

  very carefully it's but here's a here's [TS]

the 1 refrigeration to that the Statue [TS]

of Liberty along yes sir yeah I don't [TS]

know but but if it's got this [TS]

it's hip tellers nobody noticed pose if [TS]

that's not because it goes boom baby [TS]

won't stop looking at the table i look [TS]

at it and it doesn't move any incredible [TS]

they're looking to each other's eyes and [TS]

the Statue of Liberty's like I'll just [TS]

stay here because i don't have that we [TS]

don't have the budget to move me anymore [TS]

so this is it i'm gonna set [TS]

I can't move anymore also that was a [TS]

plot device that had no point while they [TS]

wanted they wanted to say wouldn't it be [TS]

neat of the statuary was an [TS]

yesterday it was an idea right like [TS]

again it's a premise that has like it [TS]

doesn't deliver but i wanted to say the [TS]

about the point of Glen earlier I what [TS]

bothered me was the will full changing [TS]

of the characters to make them act in [TS]

ways that were out of character because [TS]

we know they had to end up leaving [TS]

because when the doctors like come back [TS]

to the TARDIS will figure this out there [TS]

is no way Amy would be like oh yeah you [TS]

know what I'm just going to commit [TS]

suicide instead instead of oh you know [TS]

what that's great let's go back to the [TS]

TARDIS and figure this out because that [TS]

is what Amy Pond done right like it [TS]

  doesn't make any sense [TS]

it only makes sense if you think well [TS]

she's leaving the show so of course [TS]

she's gotta be something I contract [TS]

running out this sheet its a cheat to [TS]

have it try and pull emotional heart [TS]

strings that don't work because it's [TS]

clearly achieved clearly the you know [TS]

and I think we all saw this coming right [TS]

that when we heard that the Angels going [TS]

to be in the last episode with amy and [TS]

rory my immediate thought was they're [TS]

going to send them back in time that's [TS]

ever gonna send Rory back in time [TS]

because we always dies or something [TS]

right at least at least they had a joke [TS]

about that this time I gave them a [TS]

thumbs up for that so so we all knew [TS]

that that I think or guessed that this [TS]

would be the way and that's how this [TS]

episode felt like we had the idea which [TS]

is I want to send Rory back in time and [TS]

then Amy makes a choice to be with him [TS]

and that's the end of their trip and [TS]

everything else is predicated on that [TS]

but everything else is we have to find a [TS]

way we'll wait we can't say that once [TS]

you sent back in time you can travel in [TS]

time anymore because the doctor and [TS]

Martha get the TARDIS impact in 1969 and [TS]

then they travel in time so let's come [TS]

up with a you know a time some sort of [TS]

time locked premise and everything [TS]

seemed to be reverse engineered to get [TS]

to the desired result kinda like the [TS]

cyborg becoming the sheriff right and [TS]

none of it felt natural and that that [TS]

the rules of the of the angels were [TS]

actually being subverted in order to get [TS]

I to the destination it means I you know [TS]

I thought that the the end of the [TS]

emotional impact of the scene on the [TS]

rooftop with amy and rory and we're [TS]

being willing to jump off the building [TS]

and take the chance as he didn't want to [TS]

be locked in that room is always willing [TS]

to kill himself come on that's growing [TS]

life I thought that was a nice i thought [TS]

that was a nice is you and I thought [TS]

some of the shots of the of the Angels [TS]

chasing people in the lights blinking [TS]

all that work active but as the story [TS]

  it's just like a [TS]

complete mess because they just they [TS]

know where they want to go and then it's [TS]

just a matter of back packing up to go [TS]

out there and we know where they want to [TS]

go when they find when you find out he's [TS]

been torturing the angel to see if it [TS]

can hurt whatever that means the mob [TS]

boss you get that and I'm thinking oh so [TS]

the setup is there's a woman and a child [TS]

across the street the statues across [TS]

street that are watching your like [TS]

they're going to actually humanize the [TS]

angels are gonna make this not be you [TS]

know more applicable black rebel forces [TS]

of nature there's gonna be there's gonna [TS]

be negotiation the doctors going to [TS]

negotiate because this is actually he's [TS]

watching them scream right you know that [TS]

that's what River says no they're [TS]

screaming you know the others can hear [TS]

him and I thought well here's where you [TS]

  get this [TS]

these aren't just like you know yes [TS]

they're predators but we're going to go [TS]

deeper than that and then now this is [TS]

squandered also yeah well I were writing [TS]

this episode I would have had because i [TS]

did like when Amy and Rory jumped off [TS]

the building but then i would have had [TS]

them just died there and the paradox [TS]

  just didn't work boots [TS]

yeah yeah that would have been really i [TS]

thought about that I wondered if that [TS]

was how they're going to get out of a [TS]

bummer was like that seems too dark [TS]

even for this show but it would have [TS]

been better it would've been more [TS]

  effective [TS]

I thought the whole setup at the [TS]

beginning suck to like the whole private [TS]

I wanted it to be kind of more [TS]

interesting but it was just there for a [TS]

you know is that one good part of the [TS]

show and see I know what I'm gonna pick [TS]

to write if someone took one good part [TS]

of the show up with your pic of this [TS]

episode or is it people say there's none [TS]

the scene where Rory goes to get coffee [TS]

haha the river dr interaction and then [TS]

the risk breaking thing out so at least [TS]

one person picker same thing is going to [TS]

pick the same thing I like River Song [TS]

breaking her on rest to get anything [TS]

Heidi if you yeah that's good then I [TS]

realized like that i like the idea of [TS]

what if an angel grabs you by the wrist [TS]

what the heck do you do then I mean that [TS]

whole that whole bit was good i like [TS]

seeing on the rooftop i like i like that [TS]

little that that was like that the [TS]

farewell the actual farewell to Rory [TS]

where he go ahead Glenn enumerator [TS]

old-time arias die thank you i made a [TS]

list of curiosity and so you how we [TS]

  tried twice [TS]

how many times is where he died and I [TS]

count nine or ten so mrs. pocket kills [TS]

him in Amy's choice which is a dream [TS]

the doctor blows up the TARDIS name is [TS]

tres which is a dream [TS]

he's actually shot by race trac silurian [TS]

in cold blood as really killed but then [TS]

this is where I say you know this is an [TS]

additional one he's also and then raced [TS]

for AC unit of track right so don't know [TS]

that doesn't count twice but it's sort [TS]

of like another kind of death it's a 24 [TS]

he's shot by canton day of the Moon [TS]

which is faked he's drowned in the curse [TS]

of the black spot and then revived [TS]

  that's real [TS]

yeah he's found is a skeleton by amy and [TS]

the doctor's wife which was an illusion [TS]

eat then this is the best part he dies [TS]

of old age and angels take manhattan [TS]

then he jumps off a building angels take [TS]

manhattan baby dies of old age Nichols [TS]

take manhattan but it's one of those [TS]

real twice or well he dies twice twice a [TS]

real it was such a crappy scene and when [TS]

they come back and then like an angel [TS]

pops out because it's about that there [TS]

to kill it at the back of town [TS]

what that's so stupid i was expecting [TS]

the last but I want to see the doctor [TS]

actually take out the sonic screwdriver [TS]

and have the angel crack in a million [TS]

pieces because he's so angry [TS]

that's the doctor does he quits genocide [TS]

when he's angry and he didn't commit [TS]

genocide when you think of these as I [TS]

don't tell me kill species her bag [TS]

well i thought i did I got a little [TS]

misty-eyed at the last part there [TS]

because as so Amy of course throughout [TS]

this whole time when Amy and Rory are [TS]

together you always think well she loves [TS]

Rory but she really loves the doctor and [TS]

at this point she makes a choice and she [TS]

chooses Rory which I thought was very [TS]

touching because you find your last [TS]

season and I what they've also they've [TS]

done a couple more times with this is [TS]

like the final 11 assume so he's married [TS]

to keep reading you were already married [TS]

  to her daughter [TS]

I mean I don't they and they never were [TS]

quite able to escape that Spectre I [TS]

think of its the doctor and a femaie [TS]

attractive female companion and clearly [TS]

there you know it's going to be and [TS]

sparks sparks will fly he goes back on [TS]

the ship pieces oh I'm sure that your [TS]

parents and they're dead i forgot you're [TS]

like a palace does he say almost those [TS]

exact words but then also when when Amy [TS]

and Rory jump off the building the [TS]

doctor yells after Amy he doesn't care [TS]

about road and yeah and I thought that [TS]

was a really good moment because you [TS]

think well that's kinda he's a jerk [TS]

really cares about himself you know the [TS]

  rooftop the sexual liberties [TS]

side eye the rooftop scene i was [TS]

disappointed that the rooftop scene was [TS]

not the final scene that that right that [TS]

we had they had to do the well and we do [TS]

this magic thing and then everything is [TS]

fine and all the angels defeated yay [TS]

only it's not a and i would rather that [TS]

benefit that they they jump and the [TS]

whole thing goes kablooey and they end [TS]

up still being in the thirties and for [TS]

some reason they can't you know that's [TS]

the end and they can't move anymore but [TS]

instead they come forward and then [TS]

there's that random angel in the [TS]

graveyard and more even if they had this [TS]

then thrown it back to the previous [TS]

episode where it's like they come back [TS]

and you know if they had developed a [TS]

theme throughout the entire thing where [TS]

it's like you know what maybe maybe when [TS]

it's time for us to stop traveling and [TS]

then you know it gets too close right [TS]

the end is like that's it that's too [TS]

close you know we've got to go back to [TS]

our to our real wife like even that [TS]

would have been perfect river says river [TS]

points out she's gonna vortex [TS]

manipulator they can cut through time [TS]

without it being a problem and they [TS]

don't use it and also you have Captain [TS]

Jack Harkness in that time he's got a [TS]

vortex manipulator doesn't work and [TS]

river can still go visit them right just [TS]

a doctor who can tell what why can't the [TS]

doctor so the doctor can't go to that [TS]

time period that already can't go to New [TS]

York because can you just take the topic [TS]

autonomous to like Staten Island and [TS]

then take the ferry no one no one wants [TS]

to communicate in from jersey or Staten [TS]

  Island come on [TS]

I was like if you can't go in 1938 go in [TS]

  like nineteen forty-two I mean it's [TS]

still there they waited before [TS]

yeah was there are five year difference [TS]

in their ages because I thought that [TS]

they'd agree on pages on a gravestone [TS]

were like oh she missed my couple years [TS]

but she waited five years like that [TS]

would be the better way to end it is to [TS]

show them you know just leave because [TS]

  women live longer [TS]

yeah figured that's what that was Angelo [TS]

they may who knows what the real wages [TS]

were right because they've been aging [TS]

and out i can try to figure that a few [TS]

times because if your time traveler how [TS]

do you even keep track of what your real [TS]

age Israeli gravestones have your age on [TS]

them instead of the years of your life [TS]

well TV gravestones going here so that [TS]

  you know [TS]

ah yeah it was i was disappointed the [TS]

episode and there were some things about [TS]

that i like but it just felt like [TS]

overstuffed and over trying to create a [TS]

super dramatic ending and i will [TS]

actually would have preferred something [TS]

along the lines of the power of three [TS]

that was a little quieter [TS]

and uh and just I does every severing of [TS]

the doctor and his companions have to be [TS]

this operatic exercise i mean i guess [TS]

the point of this season was that [TS]

they've tried to slowly step away and [TS]

they just can't do it but I feel like a [TS]

much more adult and reasonable thing for [TS]

Amy and Rory to do this married couple [TS]

who is travelling with the doctor which [TS]

is a rarity right would be for them to [TS]

say you know what its we're done [TS]

we've seen it but we need to get on with [TS]

our lives I think they they can't do [TS]

  that though [TS]

more to the point what would have made [TS]

more sense about that is that this [TS]

entire the entire Amy doctor thing is a [TS]

fairytale and like basically the end you [TS]

get like the peter pan thing right like [TS]

I think the nice thing at the end would [TS]

be like it's time for them to grow up [TS]

and have a real life like that would [TS]

have been the way out and that would [TS]

have worked so well with the last scene [TS]

where he goes back and and there's that [TS]

scene from Amy's first episode where [TS]

young Amelia sitting in her backyard [TS]

with her suitcase in the morning and she [TS]

looks and she looks up as if to as if [TS]

she can hear the TARDIS and then in the [TS]

11th hour it cuts to a grownup eh but [TS]

did he actually go back to configure how [TS]

to know the implication in this episode [TS]

is that he goes back and and tells her [TS]

that while she's waiting that she's [TS]

gonna have some great adventures in [TS]

  future entire timeline [TS]

  no i don't i don't think it necessarily [TS]

does because i believe mom that actually [TS]

was planning that from the beginning but [TS]

um but a it's it's sweet right but but [TS]

you're right then that that would be the [TS]

way to do is like it's time to grow up [TS]

were married you know we've got our [TS]

lovely house with a blue door that you [TS]

bought that you got for us somehow at [TS]

you know and and let's move on does it [TS]

need to be like like with every other [TS]

companion this kind of horrible operatic [TS]

you know high high concept [TS]

goodbye I i we got that with Martha [TS]

Martha Martha essentially did that and [TS]

  Martin yeah [TS]

the sarah jane send-off in the david [TS]

tennant you know the sort of last rounds [TS]

I mean she you know she had her life and [TS]

he was saying goodbye to her and she had [TS]

kind of gone on you know shouldn't come [TS]

back with him but they reconnected then [TS]

this appears we've gotten some of that [TS]

but i think the problem is that when [TS]

usually when the something selfless has [TS]

to happen for the for the companion to [TS]

be killed or disappear and it didn't [TS]

happen here was like a mistake it was [TS]

like an air of the doctor screwed up and [TS]

let an angel slept through or whatever [TS]

and so they didn't have which they [TS]

didn't do this to save the world induce [TS]

that the throwing themselves at the [TS]

building saved all those people and [TS]

maybe destroyed the Angels nexus and God [TS]

knows what's important there but this [TS]

one they're like oh it was a mistake and [TS]

  now we're both gone [TS]

yeah I say a few words about angels [TS]

before we go yes please [TS]

so the first thing is that i think the [TS]

Angels have become the new Daleks which [TS]

is disappointing it used to be whenever [TS]

they needed to have a big dramatic [TS]

episode that will get the fans excited [TS]

they would pull the Daleks and they did [TS]

that for like five years and now it's [TS]

like all right all right enough for the [TS]

Daleks right by the everyone loves blank [TS]

so then it's like uber now the new tool [TS]

to excite the fanboys to bring back [TS]

angels at so that's problem number one [TS]

with them and problem number two is I [TS]

the angels are a good concept but they [TS]

think they work so well on blink that's [TS]

kind of the same reason that the shark [TS]

work so well in Jaws because they you [TS]

know didn't show it all the time yes and [TS]

now when the angels are constantly being [TS]

show but the big scary fangs mouth like [TS]

you got to save that or not do it don't [TS]

like yeah you have to get them on hidden [TS]

and off-camera and they're just getting [TS]

overused and it's a shame together [TS]

scarier by imagination right like [TS]

there's great when you do have to think [TS]

about it like okay the angels come yeah [TS]

not when I can have it you can have a [TS]

chase scene with angels so much like [TS]

it's not that bad i like well they're [TS]

very fast when you're not looking but I [TS]

i agree with Dan said earlier again I [TS]

said simultaneously that there are when [TS]

they're a force of nature and there are [TS]

aspects of the the time of angels [TS]

episode in Matt Smith's first season [TS]

that I liked in the sense that it was [TS]

still they what they didn't do is send [TS]

people back in time they broke their [TS]

next which was lame because that the [TS]

consumers they send them back in time [TS]

but I did like that that was the you [TS]

know we're in this place where all the [TS]

statues and some of them are angels and [TS]

we don't know which ones they are and [TS]

and and there was some of the creepiness [TS]

there but you're right the more you see [TS]

them the less value they seem to have [TS]

their better when they're this [TS]

  completely unthinking essentially just [TS]

they're currently carnivores they touch [TS]

you they want to eat your time energy [TS]

they they're a force of nature [TS]

you can't deal with them you can't [TS]

strategize you just have to survive and [TS]

blink was great at that and the more we [TS]

see them you know this may be true with [TS]

any interest with all these enemies [TS]

right the more you see of them kinda [TS]

more ridiculous they're all the Cyberman [TS]

were ridiculous from the start so at [TS]

least they don't get any worse than just [TS]

a dance and happy haha it's so [TS]

embarrassing the Statue of Liberty thing [TS]

was it was like a turd in the pool it [TS]

was really like is just it was [TS]

ridiculous in the middle of an episode [TS]

that it makes sense anyway you're like [TS]

  come on [TS]

I was embarrassed by watching that [TS]

actually there you go you embarrass me [TS]

doctor with your with your statue of [TS]

  liberty [TS]

yeah I thought it was a cool idea but [TS]

ridiculous in the premise that if you're [TS]

looking at an angel can move so then the [TS]

special Liberty know what nevermind I [TS]

how did everybody else in this every [TS]

night like it was to get loudly I mean [TS]

we think of a clover so if you want to [TS]

  yeah exactly [TS]

well if you wanna if you want to do the [TS]

Statue of Liberty joke right [TS]

think of the end of blink you know it [TS]

why not have it why don't do a thing [TS]

where there's a blackout or or people [TS]

look away and then essentially just gone [TS]

or something I mean it could be a really [TS]

great gag or a blue links you're right [TS]

with like to end music from the link [TS]

place to continue to hold the torch in [TS]

the other hand right that would be funny [TS]

just sort of like clump through the city [TS]

and then growls and make the scary face [TS]

in the background while no one's looking [TS]

at it I have scary face and that I mean [TS]

who you could even have like some kind [TS]

of story where that is the the queen of [TS]

the angels or something in the doctor in [TS]

prisons it there because that's the [TS]

statue that people look at all the [TS]

time's right you'll never guess so it's [TS]

always trapped there I just like I i [TS]

just realized i remembered a moment in [TS]

the last episode that i did like a lot [TS]

so they're in New York modern-day New [TS]

York right now obviously they pay to get [TS]

people there so they have to shoot in [TS]

places in New York that people will [TS]

recognize so for no real reason [TS]

Amy and the doctor have this [TS]

conversation that takes them from [TS]

Central Park Times Square to the george [TS]

washington bridge and as they're talking [TS]

it was like what's happened at the [TS]

doctor says I don't know where New York [TS]

and then they go to pass new york and i [TS]

just thought that was they could think [TS]

because it there's no reason for them to [TS]

be walking around these places they're [TS]

just in New York so they have to [TS]

so so before we go I wanted to at least [TS]

touch on Amy and Rory's characters and [TS]

it since we're saying goodbye to them [TS]

any sort of last thoughts about how [TS]

they're out how you're going to think of [TS]

these characters and and and how you [TS]

think that that the story went I you [TS]

know I ended up liking Rory a lot which [TS]

is surprising that he had he ended up [TS]

being you know a funny you know loyal [TS]

husband to Amy and and honorable and [TS]

always tried he got to get a couple [TS]

scenes of badasses yeah well being a [TS]

sensory and yeah I mean I hehe was much [TS]

more than I thought he would be [TS]

and you know I thought amy was a lot of [TS]

fun that she was capable and sassy and [TS]

and all the things that a Doctor Who [TS]

companion needs to be and she wasn't you [TS]

know wasn't really a screamer and she [TS]

wasn't really after her first sort of [TS]

infatuation with the doctor was not [TS]

mooning over him at all and you know I i [TS]

enjoyed the run with with Amy and Rory I [TS]

thought I thought that for [TS]

two-and-a-half seasons which is actually [TS]

quite a long time in modern Doctor Who [TS]

terms i thought i thought it was a good [TS]

ride and III and honestly i think is [TS]

probably enough and I think it's time [TS]

for something to yeah i agree i really i [TS]

grew up I grew to like them a lot [TS]

I mean I like I thought amy was pretty [TS]

good from the get-go right starts out as [TS]

kind of a wet blanket and they can I [TS]

realize they need to you know give him [TS]

something and I think starting with the [TS]

second matt smith season is any better [TS]

it doesn't much better job yeah and i [TS]

think they give him some really fun [TS]

stuff to do which I enjoy and that the [TS]

dynamic I think Arthur Darvill and and [TS]

karen gillan and end up having really [TS]

great they have really good chemistry [TS]

and I think they clearly really enjoy [TS]

working with each other and with matt [TS]

smith and that shows and I think that [TS]

for me was always the best part of it [TS]

was seeing these these two companions [TS]

who are fairly gift fairly capable and [TS]

fairly used to this idea of traveling [TS]

around the doctor but are there to keep [TS]

them sort of grounded and I think that [TS]

that relationship works really well for [TS]

me and I will be I will miss them all I [TS]

wish there they're ending itself had [TS]

more a little more weight to it i mean [TS]

that to me the gold standard of [TS]

companion leavings was the Donna Noble I [TS]

group with Glenn that one to me is [TS]

always just the most heartbreaking [TS]

  yeah and [TS]

I wanted it to be more of that level and [TS]

it wasn't but I as a whole as a run when [TS]

I i really enjoyed them i will be sad to [TS]

see them go but I look forward to seeing [TS]

what's next and hoping that maybe [TS]

freeing us from them will give steven [TS]

moffat a chance to try some new stuff [TS]

and maybe we can get back to some some [TS]

some better better qualities though I [TS]

had to go and watch the opening of [TS]

demons run the other day because I want [TS]

to remember that terrific seen that was [TS]

I thought our Arthur Darvill best moment [TS]

I feel like I wonder if the actor they [TS]

didn't know how entertaining he would be [TS]

with the chemistry be like because [TS]

introduced him instead of passing you [TS]

figure he's the he's the schlemazel he's [TS]

going to gets left off and Amy's gonna [TS]

go off the doctor and will fall in love [TS]

with him again whatever and then you see [TS]

he was so funny and so good and so [TS]

different I feel like they don't know if [TS]

this is true but I feel like they then [TS]

made him have to be better ass and live [TS]

2,000 years and have that memory so that [TS]

opening of demons run where she's [TS]

talking to her melody as a infinite say [TS]

you're you know this man is known across [TS]

the galaxy he lived for hundreds of [TS]

years I know mrs. ensuring your like [TS]

it's pretty funny they're like and then [TS]

he shows up like a message from the [TS]

doctor and a question you know for [TS]

myself and you're like as a great one of [TS]

the best openings of any episode the [TS]

ship's blow up its the siren many like [TS]

the document even involved it was great [TS]

as my Scott melty thing I never warmed [TS]

her re oh never he never wanted me over [TS]

like it's not because the actor the [TS]

actor is great i just think his [TS]

character they never gave him enough [TS]

like its characters more too much of a [TS]

wet dish rack like he had a good noble [TS]

intentions but he just never he never [TS]

asserted himself even when he was [TS]

supposed to be asserting himself like in [TS]

many points in the plot if you were to [TS]

explain the plot here is worried his [TS]

ex-wife's like always totally asserting [TS]

himself but it didn't it didn't play out [TS]

like that site i never warmed to him as [TS]

a character I think he worked in the [TS]

context of the three of them as [TS]

companions like that that trio worked [TS]

but I like Rory is not like oh he's a [TS]

cool guy like Tim like I didn't like his [TS]

character I and Amy I liked Amy i like [TS]

that i like to me the most when she had [TS]

self-doubt that's the Amy character that [TS]

I like like the spunky sassy one I like [TS]

to think that mostly was an act [TS]

and when she started to own that as if [TS]

that's the real her i don't know if i [TS]

was completely earned i really like the [TS]

Amy who really doubts whether she's [TS]

doing the right thing or thought she was [TS]

crazy because you saw the raggedy man [TS]

when she was younger and that are all [TS]

her all her doubt about everything you [TS]

know about what is she doing the right [TS]

thing with her life who should she be [TS]

with should be doing this at all what [TS]

you know that's being with that I like [TS]

so I think she went out just as the last [TS]

ounces of a meself that was being [TS]

squeezed and it's kind of a shame too [TS]

because I felt like I still think back [TS]

to the episode with the old Amy where [TS]

she got left there for 30 years and she [TS]

was all bitter and amy was never given [TS]

those kind of scenes and like it cheats [TS]

stretch yourself and that episode more [TS]

than she did most of the other one so I [TS]

think she's a good actress and I would [TS]

have liked to seen her use a little bit [TS]

better but overall the three of them [TS]

mostly work together as a trio but I'm [TS]

more than ready for them to sail off [TS]

  into the sunset [TS]

it's time on a pirate ship haha [TS]

Rory is a dope and that's my main [TS]

problem with him he is just he doesn't [TS]

do much of anything he's just there with [TS]

this rag he is kind of annoying he's [TS]

still annoying he's less annoying now [TS]

that I guess he's dead for the 11-time [TS]

but it's i watch and I never re fans [TS]

still letter or fam and i'm not i'm kind [TS]

of lukewarm with a me too i just i don't [TS]

  i don't know i guess they're better [TS]

together you're gonna like the hot new [TS]

chick is replacing them now she's a [TS]

Dalek so maybe that'll be exciting you [TS]

know it's got I'm disappointed hear you [TS]

say that because I I've always thought [TS]

of you as our worry all well I am a dope [TS]

as well maybe that's why don't I just [TS]

like you so I've killed Scott seven [TS]

attack got a certain himself away more [TS]

than Rory ever did and you really live [TS]

in 1938 as well so perfect [TS]

  that's true i don't know i just always [TS]

felt like he's kinda just a sad sack but [TS]

he's just kind of tagging along he's the [TS]

third wheel or like it's the fifth wheel [TS]

yes i'm a third wheel is a tricycle so [TS]

that's using your card has no wheels is [TS]

the wheel like his father [TS]

I vote for Rory's father to be the next [TS]

companion i do love his father Royce's [TS]

Royce dad's great instead was great [TS]

yeah so who's gonna tell Rory's a where [TS]

is dead that's what i thought that [TS]

is the part I thought I wanted to see [TS]

that after after the end of the power of [TS]

the right link right I want I want I [TS]

want that blink ending where where where [TS]

Sally Sparrow gets the letter from her [TS]

friend who's been sent back in time I [TS]

wanted that I wanted like river song i [TS]

wanted the doctor to have to go tell him [TS]

like I wanted the doctor to have to look [TS]

them in the face and tell him what [TS]

yeah I kind of screwed up imagine river [TS]

bringing a letter from Amy to her [TS]

parents and and from Rory to Rory's dad [TS]

from the past saying we said we had a [TS]

good life hurts you know that's right [TS]

our parents I had no degree no warrants [TS]

never exist really they do exist they [TS]

got reimagined really existed except [TS]

then they never gets they never get seen [TS]

  again [TS]

they were your parents like to see river [TS]

go to amy's parents who say well I'm [TS]

your granddaughter and your children [TS]

died at age 84 w seven whole days [TS]

not that long line yeah it's fine that [TS]

late but I am your granddaughter even [TS]

though it's a good luck isn't yeah now I [TS]

mean I maintain that I would love to [TS]

have seen it seen with the doctor having [TS]

to tell Rory's dad what happened because [TS]

i think that would have had more [TS]

emotional weight to it because we saw [TS]

the previous episode was like take care [TS]

of them and it's like yeah turns out now [TS]

of them and it's like yeah turns out now [TS]

so much they live again they were not [TS]

killed by a Dalek service i remember [TS]

anything they just live their lives and [TS]

then died of old age in a hotel with no [TS]

no the hotel i'm just-just backward [TS]

Scott mykelti's era solving crimes they [TS]

opened the detective agency and i'm [TS]

writing a series of books about our head [TS]

  there you go [TS]

yeah yeah alright well that brings us to [TS]

the end of our I guess twice a year now [TS]

since they split the season recap of [TS]

doctor who doctor who seasons will be [TS]

back at Christmas if I will be back at [TS]

Christmas yes a poorly Scott and i'll be [TS]

here but not Scott's mom [TS]

no she won't be here she doesn't like [TS]

doctor who know but i think i can go out [TS]

on a limb and say that our summary of [TS]

this 5 episode stretch of doctor who is [TS]

  disappointing [TS]

  that's unfair yeah [TS]

yes bad but fair there's so few they [TS]

have to be good and weather like this [TS]

you think i know i mean you know we all [TS]

know his predecessors showrunner Russell [TS]

T Davies was going to know practically [TS]

killed himself writing these episodes [TS]

and some turned on even but on the whole [TS]

the Ark's everything else were you could [TS]

argue about them whatever there is some [TS]

great stuff in it and I feel like Moffat [TS]

is burned out he's got either too much [TS]

going on or he's just not pulling [TS]

together because these feel like drafts [TS]

instead of final shows and they [TS]

shouldn't with with this few episodes [TS]

here let him concentrate on shiraki [TS]

already slipped up one episode last [TS]

quote unquote season of Sherlock slim [TS]

concentrate their because I at this [TS]

point I like Sherlock so much better [TS]

very funny yeah even fewer episodes less [TS]

often and out well but still like he got [TS]

order to get two out of three good ones [TS]

  last time [TS]

yeah so now if it's like 1 out of 3 10 [TS]

23 it's like well now they're uneven [TS]

  footing [TS]

alright so thank you to my panel for [TS]

this nice discussion of this show that I [TS]

love and that is disappointing me [TS]

  greatly [TS]

it's good to have you with me to confirm [TS]

my feelings that I are my feelings of [TS]

  unease work [TS]

we're all John Syracuse on this episode [TS]

9 also yeah really that we cross the [TS]

threshold there's no doubt about it we [TS]

and like I like in Spartacus [TS]

yes and I reserve siracusa I'm not he's [TS]

  over there [TS]

John syracuse number to thank you [TS]

timing Jason all about the time is all [TS]

about the timing on syracuse number [TS]

three is Glenn fleischmann thank you [TS]

like to think of myself as John siracusa [TS]

seaside alright from parallel universe [TS]

exactly and not John siracusa is Scott [TS]

  healthy [TS]

well I'm just glad to hear that you [TS]

think of me as the Rory to your image [TS]

  I didn't say I didn't say who anyone [TS]

basin is the prettiest to Amyas and it's [TS]

glenn look at your heart so until next [TS]

time on the uncomfortable this is jason [TS]

still signing off thanks everybody for [TS]

  listening [TS]

  [Music] [TS]

there's no reason for them to be walking [TS]

around these places they're just in New [TS]

York so they have to show us where the [TS]

end up at Katz's Deli eating a sandwich [TS]

they should have been a dollar would [TS]

have said I'll have what he's having [TS]

yay data compression condom meant egg [TS]

salad date consu mate consummated [TS]

consumate and then it and then they went [TS]

to a spa x fully 80 and then the Dalek [TS]

died it was sent back in time by an [TS]

angel of death of a Dalek [TS]

yeah well I want to the Daleks fight the [TS]

Angels ultimate ultimate 10 what we did [TS]

westerns Daleks women westerns dogs that [TS]

Nazi Daleks and your way to the Daleks [TS]

wear hats with art deco Daleks we [TS]

haven't had western-themed on some [TS]

people say that that Dalek is still [TS]
