00:00:38   tonight we are going to be discussing [TS]

00:00:40   one of my favorite movies of all time [TS]

00:00:45   it's true it is a fine film from 1982 [TS]

00:00:50   directed by Nicholas Meyer UMaine mostly [TS]

00:00:58   know it for the the title the title [TS]

00:01:02   character a fellow named god never was [TS]

00:01:10   your head shaking and rages you always [TS]

00:01:12   you made out of that because it almost [TS]

00:01:14   needs my fists were shaking [TS]

00:01:15   who yes I think I've i think i've blown [TS]

00:01:18   out my microphone while shouting and [TS]

00:01:21   your voice should be echoing in space [TS]

00:01:23   right a dead moon it's it's very exactly [TS]

00:01:25   con-con it started to the wrath of khan [TS]

00:01:29   and joining me tonight to talk about [TS]

00:01:32   this most excellent of Star Trek movies [TS]

00:01:35   here on we are recording this on Khan [TS]

00:01:37   Wednesday everybody's favorite chain [TS]

00:01:39   restaurant [TS]

00:01:40   Star Trek theme chain restaurant it's [TS]

00:01:41   always wednesday con Wednesday are my [TS]

00:01:45   fellow Star Trek fan Scott McNulty hi [TS]

00:01:49   Scott [TS]

00:01:50   hello jason i have been and always will [TS]

00:01:52   be recording indeed also joining me is [TS]

00:01:57   the great Steve let's hi Steve [TS]

00:01:59   Oh was were you expecting the great [TS]

00:02:01   Steve laughs I'm sorry better get off so [TS]

00:02:03   we can write star trek in Babylon 5 or [TS]

00:02:05   not in the same university i'm really [TS]

00:02:07   looking forward to discussing star trek [TS]

00:02:09   that like the excellent [TS]

00:02:10   this is from the Babylon 5 extended [TS]

00:02:12   start exactly right exactly right where [TS]

00:02:14   it's from and joining me as somebody [TS]

00:02:16   I've been talking to about this podcast [TS]

00:02:18   since we before we started and he has [TS]

00:02:20   not been on it until tonight he is a [TS]

00:02:24   sci-fi fan extraordinaire and immobile [TS]

00:02:29   analyst extraordinaire to he's a he's a [TS]

00:02:31   lovely fellow and we're glad to finally [TS]

00:02:33   have money and comfortable it's Michael [TS]

00:02:35   Gartenberg hi your task me Jason let's [TS]

00:02:38   ask me you task to task me and i shall [TS]

00:02:42   happen is going to chase you around the [TS]

00:02:44   flames of perdition [TS]

00:02:45   yes and then some nebulae that was not [TS]

00:02:48   in mobile [TS]

00:02:48   dick which apparently they knew about in [TS]

00:02:50   1996 this is not a subtle there's a lot [TS]

00:02:57   of depth and yeah they're actually [TS]

00:02:59   they're there is some subtlety in it but [TS]

00:03:01   there is also some not subtlety in it so [TS]

00:03:03   I let's get started in the great [TS]

00:03:06   tradition of incomparable movie episodes [TS]

00:03:08   i was going to die i suppose first even [TS]

00:03:11   though John Syracuse's and here i should [TS]

00:03:12   ask if anybody has any opening remarks [TS]

00:03:14   but otherwise I thought we would just [TS]

00:03:15   sort of walk through the movie [TS]

00:03:16   chronologically and and see where that [TS]

00:03:18   takes us because you know that that [TS]

00:03:21   seems to be the most effective way to [TS]

00:03:23   approach these movies and I have to say [TS]

00:03:24   I I like John circular saw a lot but i [TS]

00:03:26   am very glad he's not on this podcast [TS]

00:03:27   yeah i love this movie [TS]

00:03:29   I'm i continued not think this movie was [TS]

00:03:31   not invited yes I I should probably [TS]

00:03:33   point out that i am not here to bash [TS]

00:03:35   this film I am NOT as you know a a up [TS]

00:03:39   big-time star trek favorite you got a [TS]

00:03:41   star trek good i I'm not filled with [TS]

00:03:44   nostalgia for the TV show but and in [TS]

00:03:47   fact i just saw this film for the first [TS]

00:03:49   time last week are you seriously and i [TS]

00:03:52   watched it for a second time this week I [TS]

00:03:54   but I'm not here to bash a classic film [TS]

00:03:59   watch it like 90 more times and you'll [TS]

00:04:02   catch up with me [TS]

00:04:03   ya know I was I was I was not expecting [TS]

00:04:06   much from this movie because the the [TS]

00:04:09   star trek first-generation series always [TS]

00:04:13   struck me as if fun but largely goofy [TS]

00:04:15   and and then I watched this film and it [TS]

00:04:20   turns out that it is fun but largely [TS]

00:04:22   goofy sea and in the first time I was [TS]

00:04:25   picking at it a bit but then I the [TS]

00:04:26   second time i watched I just SAT back in [TS]

00:04:28   Washington I have to admit once I did [TS]

00:04:30   that I really enjoyed the movie a couple [TS]

00:04:33   of years how I cannot believe that we [TS]

00:04:35   found the only person in the world who [TS]

00:04:36   had it before last we cannot see mr. two [TS]

00:04:39   buddies yes well now having said that I [TS]

00:04:41   i'm not sure i would place it even in [TS]

00:04:44   the same quadrant as any of the Star [TS]

00:04:46   Wars films from the original mm and and [TS]

00:04:49   I know I knew you and you end and Scott [TS]

00:04:52   have both said that you prefer this to [TS]

00:04:54   empire is heavily yes indeed india also [TS]

00:04:57   i come to this podcast in the hope that [TS]

00:05:00   I may cultivate and understand [TS]

00:05:02   ending of why don't some love well for [TS]

00:05:05   one there were no he walks in it and I [TS]

00:05:07   just felt I know I must be missing [TS]

00:05:09   something because Jason I know to be a [TS]

00:05:12   man of some refinement given his [TS]

00:05:14   appreciation of a real genius not see [TS]

00:05:17   there you go [TS]

00:05:17   but it is interesting because this film [TS]

00:05:19   came two years after Empire and I think [TS]

00:05:22   there was a lot of influences way Empire [TS]

00:05:24   was made in the way they made this film [TS]

00:05:25   as opposed to star trek one which if you [TS]

00:05:28   watch this film they just simply pretend [TS]

00:05:29   they don't exist [TS]

00:05:31   yeah yeah when when we were talking last [TS]

00:05:33   week I think and wisely so we think you [TS]

00:05:36   said well if we got at least mention the [TS]

00:05:38   original Star Trek before we talk about [TS]

00:05:40   star trek to because it was you know [TS]

00:05:42   kind of ponderous and Estelle's yeah it [TS]

00:05:47   was not really a very good movie it's [TS]

00:05:50   like they try to do everything in that [TS]

00:05:52   movie and so they did nothing and it was [TS]

00:05:55   like the worst day off of the film ever [TS]

00:05:57   they got to the end of that movie after [TS]

00:05:58   sitting for three hours like what I [TS]

00:06:02   still remember the ad campaign from that [TS]

00:06:04   film which was plainly leaving the [TS]

00:06:06   theater and and dumping their thoughts [TS]

00:06:09   on camera and nobody could really think [TS]

00:06:12   of what to say that in fact i just i [TS]

00:06:14   still remember the young kid at the very [TS]

00:06:16   end he just stares out into space and [TS]

00:06:18   doesn't say anything for about three [TS]

00:06:20   seconds and then the only thing you can [TS]

00:06:22   say is fun [TS]

00:06:24   yeah any quite know what to do with the [TS]

00:06:30   franchise the franchise had been gone I [TS]

00:06:31   mean don't have never done this before [TS]

00:06:32   right I went off the air all of a sudden [TS]

00:06:35   Star Wars is this popular thing and [TS]

00:06:37   Roddenberry convinces this video let's [TS]

00:06:39   do star trek again but now i can do with [TS]

00:06:41   a big-budget special effects and you can [TS]

00:06:44   see the influence of the first film of [TS]

00:06:45   star wars star wars had a light speed [TS]

00:06:48   jump and stow Star Trek's only had to a [TS]

00:06:50   work jump but we're going to ours a [TS]

00:06:52   color as opposed to the black-and-white [TS]

00:06:54   wanted they traveled by rainbow [TS]

00:06:55   yeah the absolutely it was it was [TS]

00:06:58   totally there and you know 45 minutes of [TS]

00:07:01   dots of the enterprise which think it [TS]

00:07:03   was good because they reuse those shots [TS]

00:07:04   like you know when the next five films [TS]

00:07:06   they're building up the librarian stock [TS]

00:07:08   photography yeah [TS]

00:07:09   we got that's what it was but the thing [TS]

00:07:11   is everything is so totally different in [TS]

00:07:14   this film like this is the film that [TS]

00:07:15   really should have started the franchise [TS]

00:07:19   alright because it's got the characters [TS]

00:07:21   right it's got character interaction and [TS]

00:07:23   the characters were always the strength [TS]

00:07:24   of the original series anyway and so to [TS]

00:07:26   make it about the sort of special [TS]

00:07:27   effects and and and have this kind of [TS]

00:07:30   really long ponderous preachy kind of [TS]

00:07:32   plot as opposed to in this where it's [TS]

00:07:34   there's action and then there are some [TS]

00:07:36   really nice character interactions and [TS]

00:07:38   there's a you know there's a theme and [TS]

00:07:39   there's a message but it's not it's not [TS]

00:07:42   preachy and you know you're right it is [TS]

00:07:45   this is the movie that was the movie [TS]

00:07:48   that they should have made but they they [TS]

00:07:49   didn't they took this kind of leftover [TS]

00:07:51   TV episode and blew it up and yeah not [TS]

00:07:55   so good but they create pretended that [TS]

00:07:58   the first one didn't exist then you go [TS]

00:07:59   right into the fact that uniforms are [TS]

00:08:01   different the ship is different i think [TS]

00:08:03   this is like only don't think it's the [TS]

00:08:05   same is kirk is an admiral and isn't it [TS]

00:08:09   basically the same opening I mean I seem [TS]

00:08:11   to recall i remember the first well but [TS]

00:08:13   i remember that the they were they were [TS]

00:08:16   wandering up to the newly go up to the [TS]

00:08:17   new ship and both of them and a lot of [TS]

00:08:19   the stuff that it thats instructor to is [TS]

00:08:21   is effect scenes from from Star Trek one [TS]

00:08:24   so that part is the same but again they [TS]

00:08:25   do it [TS]

00:08:26   this is jumping a slightly ahead but [TS]

00:08:28   they do it in like 30 seconds in this [TS]

00:08:29   movie and then start to recommend motion [TS]

00:08:31   pictures like 10 minutes but one thing [TS]

00:08:33   but they were not planning to be on the [TS]

00:08:35   enterprise in that first film where they [TS]

00:08:37   have I thought they were retired in that [TS]

00:08:39   film as well and then ended up just by [TS]

00:08:41   virtue of something yes yes curtain both [TS]

00:08:43   movies does take over for the actual [TS]

00:08:45   captain right and then while the first [TS]

00:08:48   in the first movie they were sort of [TS]

00:08:49   less subtle about that Curtis takes over [TS]

00:08:51   and with that that will be open with [TS]

00:08:53   like 20 minutes of Klingons being [TS]

00:08:55   destroyed that's true that's true [TS]

00:08:56   where's this movie begins with the the [TS]

00:09:00   were thrown into the 23rd century and we [TS]

00:09:03   don't know what we're looking at it [TS]

00:09:04   looks like it's the bridge of the [TS]

00:09:05   enterprise going into the neutral zone [TS]

00:09:07   accept that some of our familiar friends [TS]

00:09:09   are there but there's this girl with [TS]

00:09:11   pointy ears who's who's in the captain's [TS]

00:09:13   chair and and she manages to get the [TS]

00:09:16   ship blown up girls equipment drivers no [TS]

00:09:20   survivors were all [TS]

00:09:22   here in that music and then you see [TS]

00:09:23   Spock whore you see McCoy and soon [TS]

00:09:26   actually wrote this down last night and [TS]

00:09:28   then all of a sudden she turns rally the [TS]

00:09:30   hell is sitting in that chair was some [TS]

00:09:34   mystery is going on here [TS]

00:09:37   corona I with you and so this is the [TS]

00:09:38   first time I've watched this movie with [TS]

00:09:40   a critical eye because usually i'm just [TS]

00:09:42   basking in the glory that is star trek [TS]

00:09:44   to date so I do you think about it too [TS]

00:09:46   much but as I'm watching it so I know [TS]

00:09:48   obviously what the first scene is right [TS]

00:09:50   it's kasia peru we find out that you [TS]

00:09:53   know it's there in a simulator and it's [TS]

00:09:55   a no-win situation it sets up one of [TS]

00:09:57   these great pieces of lower in the star [TS]

00:09:59   trek universe right and we find out [TS]

00:10:01   there's a payoff later on with the the [TS]

00:10:03   whole Kobayashi Maru thing but as I'm [TS]

00:10:05   watching it so it's a training exercise [TS]

00:10:06   and I think why do they have these [TS]

00:10:09   experience to office alright playing [TS]

00:10:12   along in this training exercise it makes [TS]

00:10:14   no sense wouldn't it all be cadets yes [TS]

00:10:16   well I guess presumably they're there [TS]

00:10:19   because you think that they're going to [TS]

00:10:21   give you some guidance right and then [TS]

00:10:22   they're killed off in Reverse to whom [TS]

00:10:24   McCoy spot they're all going and my [TS]

00:10:26   question is who's wired the bridge [TS]

00:10:28   yeah yeah there's a lot of pyrotechnics [TS]

00:10:30   involved and and has no one yet put [TS]

00:10:33   seatbelts on the enterprise they're the [TS]

00:10:35   only ones with enough experience to [TS]

00:10:36   reasonably throw themselves across the [TS]

00:10:39   bridge in a convincing and Kirk seems [TS]

00:10:41   quite upset about the fact that they he [TS]

00:10:43   says they destroyed the bridge and and [TS]

00:10:46   you with it like you know how dare you [TS]

00:10:48   know you broke my ship will who wired [TS]

00:10:49   this thing to explode when fake playing [TS]

00:10:52   with fire fake torpedoes [TS]

00:10:54   well if you remember in the first one [TS]

00:10:56   they had seatbelt like the armrest sort [TS]

00:10:58   of collapsed in their mysterious figure [TS]

00:11:00   that was kind of stupid mistake and it [TS]

00:11:03   is just roll of quarters roll across the [TS]

00:11:05   floor that will shake the ship so any [TS]

00:11:07   questions so the star trek to ever there [TS]

00:11:09   was a rumor before it came out that spot [TS]

00:11:10   was going to get killed so they put the [TS]

00:11:12   scene in and killed Spock immediately in [TS]

00:11:14   the first thing I uh okay he's not [TS]

00:11:16   really its just faked out [TS]

00:11:18   yeah he'll be fine but it but you know [TS]

00:11:19   the first time you see you don't know [TS]

00:11:21   that it's a simulation we don't know [TS]

00:11:22   what's going on any open the door and [TS]

00:11:24   you see kind of Kirk in that shadow that [TS]

00:11:26   sell variants [TS]

00:11:28   now we're now we're going to get some [TS]

00:11:30   explanations to what's going on in his [TS]

00:11:32   parallel universe but first you think [TS]

00:11:34   it's God but then you think what does [TS]

00:11:35   God need with this time for a hairpiece [TS]

00:11:38   I Captain Kirk at the beginning aids [TS]

00:11:40   it's really funny in the beginning of [TS]

00:11:42   the movie he's he's kind of a a a jerk [TS]

00:11:46   right he's like he does no sense of [TS]

00:11:48   humor he he really kind of gives it to [TS]

00:11:51   sonic when he comes in and says you know [TS]

00:11:54   you you screwed this up and and McCoys [TS]

00:11:56   making jokes and and he's not listening [TS]

00:11:58   and he and he has a conversation with [TS]

00:12:02   Spock that is not he accepts this case [TS]

00:12:05   it's implied but it's never said [TS]

00:12:07   outright this is like 50th birthday and [TS]

00:12:09   he's feeling very old and washed up in [TS]

00:12:11   his little Admirals Admirals job and and [TS]

00:12:14   bone the same so you get the book from [TS]

00:12:17   Spock and bones brings him [TS]

00:12:18   antique glasses and booze in Romulan now [TS]

00:12:22   but I thought that was great the scene [TS]

00:12:24   with him and McCoy and those glasses [TS]

00:12:26   it's me that's one of the best scenes in [TS]

00:12:28   the film because this is about age this [TS]

00:12:30   is about like these people that have [TS]

00:12:31   grown old together and everyone else is [TS]

00:12:33   kind of accepted their place in life [TS]

00:12:35   except for Kirk and he's trying to deal [TS]

00:12:37   with it you know got moping around the [TS]

00:12:39   galaxies is that game for the young and [TS]

00:12:41   I'm not doing that anymore [TS]

00:12:43   and of course like that's not you are [TS]

00:12:46   really the whole theme of this film is [TS]

00:12:47   our journey through Kirk's midlife [TS]

00:12:50   crisis [TS]

00:12:50   oh yeah absolutely that's what this is [TS]

00:12:52   in fact the final line of the film is I [TS]

00:12:55   feel young [TS]

00:12:56   what part what part of this with me was [TS]

00:12:58   the young Kirk remember this is the guy [TS]

00:13:00   who is the youngest Starfleet captain [TS]

00:13:03   history who brought the enterprise back [TS]

00:13:05   in a five-year mission without killing [TS]

00:13:06   most of his crew he was a hero and now [TS]

00:13:09   he's like this middle-aged guy and the [TS]

00:13:11   rest of this build is him taking [TS]

00:13:12   consequences for all of his actions and [TS]

00:13:15   you know we look back at some of those [TS]

00:13:16   actions like that was pretty stupid like [TS]

00:13:19   you just left them on that planet just [TS]

00:13:21   that they know like I found myself for [TS]

00:13:25   the first time I was rooting for con [TS]

00:13:26   last night have been out khan khan has a [TS]

00:13:29   lot of issues but but it he's a jerk is [TS]

00:13:31   not without blame right Kahn is a little [TS]

00:13:34   peeved i watched space seed before i [TS]

00:13:36   watch this for watch this I really did [TS]

00:13:39   my homework [TS]

00:13:40   I take this thing I did too and it's [TS]

00:13:43   basically he's kind of not Michael guy [TS]

00:13:44   you know Kirk brings my hibernation [TS]

00:13:46   tries to kill you know take over the [TS]

00:13:48   ship and you know in classic stuff that [TS]

00:13:50   you don't think about when you're [TS]

00:13:51   watching the show [TS]

00:13:52   well I'll just remove removing you on [TS]

00:13:54   this planet and you know we move along [TS]

00:13:56   and this film sort of explores all those [TS]

00:13:58   things we see that with his relationship [TS]

00:14:00   with Carol Marcus we've never heard of [TS]

00:14:02   before and you know all the exposition [TS]

00:14:05   that they set up i think that see with [TS]

00:14:07   mccoy really set up the best because [TS]

00:14:09   those classes come into play [TS]

00:14:12   I never noticed this before those [TS]

00:14:13   classes come into play at three or four [TS]

00:14:14   times throughout the film at critical [TS]

00:14:16   moments and it's like whoever directed [TS]

00:14:19   those scenes are great products chapter [TS]

00:14:21   was middle-aged at that point he plays [TS]

00:14:24   it really well [TS]

00:14:25   yeah and the glasses of course make a [TS]

00:14:28   cameo appearance in Star Trek for what [TS]

00:14:30   he sells the glasses and of course like [TS]

00:14:32   I gave you those as a present and of [TS]

00:14:33   course [TS]

00:14:34   Crixus the great things you're going to [TS]

00:14:36   do it again it's right there in a time [TS]

00:14:37   loop [TS]

00:14:38   I kind of like to forget about Star [TS]

00:14:41   Trek's 34 [TS]

00:14:42   well I think what I I think I don't get [TS]

00:14:43   too i believe that but that's another [TS]

00:14:45   story [TS]

00:14:46   I don't know you and so I watch star [TS]

00:14:48   trek 3 and it made me because I blocked [TS]

00:14:51   my memory and it made me remember that [TS]

00:14:53   two three and four are really just one [TS]

00:14:55   long story that's the kind of yeah if [TS]

00:14:57   you watch them all together it's kind of [TS]

00:14:59   neat and then there's five yeah I don't [TS]

00:15:01   know no other thing that struck me about [TS]

00:15:06   this was recorded about the body is so [TS]

00:15:09   great because in the first series don't [TS]

00:15:11   know who this guy was [TS]

00:15:12   and then this guy want to be associated [TS]

00:15:13   with your car in fee and leather he was [TS]

00:15:15   mr. Arcon Fantasy Island gotten anything [TS]

00:15:18   like that and you see him in this thing [TS]

00:15:20   and all of scenes cop I'm yeah oh yeah [TS]

00:15:22   harder much about what Ricardo Montalban [TS]

00:15:24   please this like a real actor as good as [TS]

00:15:28   Montalban is though and i do not deny [TS]

00:15:31   that he is fantastic in this when they [TS]

00:15:34   made the space seed episode could they [TS]

00:15:36   not find an East Indian actually [TS]

00:15:37   addition to yeah yeah well I mean this [TS]

00:15:39   was you know let's face this fix these [TS]

00:15:41   weak ass to everybody with people that [TS]

00:15:43   wasn't a white guy i mean if we gotta [TS]

00:15:45   get you on a white guy is that close [TS]

00:15:47   enough yeah that's closer it almost [TS]

00:15:48   works in the TV episodes got these are [TS]

00:15:50   the olive complexion as the long black [TS]

00:15:52   hair [TS]

00:15:53   in the movie with his with his hair [TS]

00:15:54   silver and is his chest of soft [TS]

00:15:56   Corinthian leather he doesn't look [TS]

00:15:58   Indian any longer [TS]

00:15:59   yeah I think they gave up on the whole [TS]

00:16:01   Indian line he was just a superhuman you [TS]

00:16:03   know superhuman East Indians had a [TS]

00:16:05   different look than anyhow ninety 90 [TS]

00:16:07   seconds genetically engineered to look [TS]

00:16:09   split look mexican in the far future of [TS]

00:16:12   manned sound six the nineties were [TS]

00:16:14   different today was a very different [TS]

00:16:15   time for genetic engineering sleeper [TS]

00:16:17   ships with cryogenic you the eugenics [TS]

00:16:20   wars it was crazy it was it was a wild [TS]

00:16:21   time and I was also another great idea [TS]

00:16:23   lets us know these people and it's been [TS]

00:16:25   damaged basis would have yeah someone [TS]

00:16:28   else probably happiness every step of [TS]

00:16:29   the problem at to someone else later [TS]

00:16:32   lead and it happens again right that's [TS]

00:16:34   all content forget since they just like [TS]

00:16:36   stick him somewhere else until he [TS]

00:16:37   escapes again it's a bad idea is there [TS]

00:16:39   any reason this man is more than a [TS]

00:16:41   little bit grumpy [TS]

00:16:42   yeah we met was he put on the sleeper [TS]

00:16:44   ship or what did he put him no no he was [TS]

00:16:47   thinking assumption was always that he [TS]

00:16:48   escaped yet flat again he fled exactly [TS]

00:16:51   right they were going to get him so he [TS]

00:16:53   took off thats that's right in space [TS]

00:16:55   seed so um I let's see I i want to go [TS]

00:17:00   from from Kirk's birthday though the [TS]

00:17:02   saddest birthday party ever [TS]

00:17:04   well there's some Romulan ale but other [TS]

00:17:06   than that it's true and that the first [TS]

00:17:08   time Robin L is mentioned and start yeah [TS]

00:17:09   I had some Romulan ale at the star trek [TS]

00:17:11   experience in Las Vegas it was beer that [TS]

00:17:13   was colored blue Syria and and it wasn't [TS]

00:17:16   particularly stronger now [TS]

00:17:17   no but had blue food color which me [TS]

00:17:19   makes you wonder why how hard was it to [TS]

00:17:21   smuggle the stuff like is it like [TS]

00:17:22   alcohol in the 23rd century just like [TS]

00:17:24   really really blue from the blue food [TS]

00:17:26   coloring that's hard to get your hands [TS]

00:17:27   up [TS]

00:17:27   well synthehol so you know nobody wants [TS]

00:17:29   exactly so drunk so we cut to a starship [TS]

00:17:32   reliant which has got a recognizable [TS]

00:17:34   face in mr. check off and if you're a [TS]

00:17:37   fan of the original series you'll [TS]

00:17:39   actually see that the transporter room [TS]

00:17:41   guide mr. Kyle from the original series [TS]

00:17:43   is one of the bridge officers on the [TS]

00:17:44   Reliant which is just random random [TS]

00:17:46   little tidbit to Darmok and and Captain [TS]

00:17:50   Darmok is on this but one of the things [TS]

00:17:52   that's really funny as they make this [TS]

00:17:53   call to Carol Marcus who we first meet [TS]

00:17:56   here who becomes a very important part [TS]

00:17:57   of this movie to talk about in one of my [TS]

00:18:00   favorite lines in this movie checkup [TS]

00:18:02   says doesn't have to be completely [TS]

00:18:03   lifeless [TS]

00:18:05   and i find that funny because I mean the [TS]

00:18:07   assumption here is that these guys have [TS]

00:18:09   gone from planet to planet throughout [TS]

00:18:10   the known galaxy and every planet has [TS]

00:18:12   life on it which if you think about like [TS]

00:18:14   modern scientific knowledge this is not [TS]

00:18:16   very likely in fact it's probably much [TS]

00:18:18   less likely that and that there are very [TS]

00:18:21   rare plant planets with life right any [TS]

00:18:23   given mode should work as a matter of [TS]

00:18:25   fact exactly the the little space [TS]

00:18:27   station is orbiting at a lifeless movie [TS]

00:18:29   right well they were a little bit [TS]

00:18:31   concerned about the nanoparticle current [TS]

00:18:33   and it because you never know when you [TS]

00:18:34   might find a particle of proto matter [TS]

00:18:36   and maybe it's the words in the sensors [TS]

00:18:38   it's screwed up but there's two big [TS]

00:18:40   metal cargo containers and like a dozen [TS]

00:18:42   super engineered humans down on the [TS]

00:18:44   planet and their sensors and fun get [TS]

00:18:47   nothing but there's not i don't know [TS]

00:18:49   what's good and more importantly is [TS]

00:18:51   every starship not commanded by Kirk you [TS]

00:18:54   know run by an idiot go back to go back [TS]

00:18:57   to every episode i'm doing dr. are just [TS]

00:19:00   these these guys like bozos I mean no [TS]

00:19:02   wonder Kirk was the youngest starship [TS]

00:19:04   captain because I everyone else [TS]

00:19:05   Starfleet Academy there's a recruitment [TS]

00:19:06   problem but Starfleet mike seemed like [TS]

00:19:08   he was competent but he was he was [TS]

00:19:10   immediately thrown aside yeah but I like [TS]

00:19:13   that see because you know the Federation [TS]

00:19:14   and Starfleet officers are always like [TS]

00:19:16   oh we're all professional and we want to [TS]

00:19:18   do a great job and in this scene they're [TS]

00:19:19   kinda like does it really have to be [TS]

00:19:21   things we like it was just kidding baby [TS]

00:19:23   plan that we budget a bit it's close to [TS]

00:19:25   home [TS]

00:19:26   come on come on with a little microbe or [TS]

00:19:29   two between friends dr. marks private us [TS]

00:19:32   a little bit crazy [TS]

00:19:33   yeah yeah they don't seem really [TS]

00:19:35   thrilled with this man isn't the whole [TS]

00:19:37   idea of transplanting whatever it is [TS]

00:19:39   kind of against the the prime directive [TS]

00:19:41   well that's funny though because then [TS]

00:19:43   they cut to Carol Marcus and she's like [TS]

00:19:44   well let me get this straight [TS]

00:19:45   it seems when transplanted like yes well [TS]

00:19:49   I don't know that she hangs up and and [TS]

00:19:51   immediately we get that we get that was [TS]

00:19:53   really funny line where where her son [TS]

00:19:55   says it's like a boy scout you you dated [TS]

00:19:58   and she's like look Jim Kirk was many [TS]

00:20:00   things but he was never a boy scout [TS]

00:20:02   which is a great line [TS]

00:20:04   let's do a little work for saturday just [TS]

00:20:06   a little our out its ok and then having [TS]

00:20:08   not seen this film I have to say that I [TS]

00:20:09   immediately said oh sorry yeah yeah i [TS]

00:20:13   mean everyone everyone who's ever seen [TS]

00:20:14   that movie back exactly right in spite [TS]

00:20:17   of in spite of the misdirection that [TS]

00:20:19   they attempt to pull by giving him that [TS]

00:20:20   righteous person yeah yeah which matches [TS]

00:20:23   the curls in shadows to pay so so so [TS]

00:20:28   then we go to study alpha 5 which is a [TS]

00:20:30   sound stage with like a optical print of [TS]

00:20:32   like extra sand blowing and its really [TS]

00:20:34   fake no no that's Teddy office six so [TS]

00:20:37   this is Ceti alpha 5 which is my [TS]

00:20:42   favorite line in the movie and my i was [TS]

00:20:44   saying it over and over again tonight my [TS]

00:20:46   wife is like you are more on the hood [TS]

00:20:48   doesn't have to be able to which i [TS]

00:20:50   replied this is the album [TS]

00:20:51   yeah although there's the scene where it [TS]

00:20:55   is there's some really nice creepy bits [TS]

00:20:57   in here and I like the scene where they [TS]

00:20:58   go into the cargo containers and they're [TS]

00:21:00   like what the hell is this [TS]

00:21:01   in fact i think i think captain Darmok [TS]

00:21:04   says what the hell is this like twice in [TS]

00:21:06   a row he does he does what the hell is [TS]

00:21:08   this and then check off sees the Botany [TS]

00:21:10   Bay logo you know get your own in the [TS]

00:21:13   gift shop Botany Bay thing goes on no [TS]

00:21:16   blood me bay and and and they run [TS]

00:21:19   outside so that's kind of creepy and [TS]

00:21:21   then right where they are immediately [TS]

00:21:22   unexpectedly presented with the [TS]

00:21:23   polyphonic spree which I thought was [TS]

00:21:25   strange in 98 do this is so bizarre for [TS]

00:21:29   couple of things first of all they do [TS]

00:21:30   that pan over the bookshop because [TS]

00:21:32   you've got to see this copy of Moby Dick [TS]

00:21:34   that right yes and King Lear again we're [TS]

00:21:35   going to foreshadow just a little bit [TS]

00:21:37   arm but then they go outside they see [TS]

00:21:40   these people on my first reaction is why [TS]

00:21:42   aren't they calling the ship it back as [TS]

00:21:43   soon as they see the botany they want to [TS]

00:21:44   getting the hell out of there don't they [TS]

00:21:46   have phasers that communicators they're [TS]

00:21:49   not they're not just a bunch of people [TS]

00:21:50   they're not making any threats Adam they [TS]

00:21:51   don't appear to have any weapons like [TS]

00:21:53   it's never quite clear what they're [TS]

00:21:55   doing other than driving the pot forward [TS]

00:21:57   and in the perennial star trek question [TS]

00:22:00   why to the captain and the first officer [TS]

00:22:03   beam-down themselves to this planet [TS]

00:22:06   well they don't think there's anything [TS]

00:22:06   down there they just want to find [TS]

00:22:08   something to transplant right they're [TS]

00:22:09   lazy and still why wouldn't you say the [TS]

00:22:11   Science Officer yeah it's true as soon [TS]

00:22:12   as they see the cargo container you [TS]

00:22:14   would think that maybe they call in [TS]

00:22:16   backup or but they don't they don't have [TS]

00:22:18   Saavik to to quote regulations at them [TS]

00:22:20   or else they probably would [TS]

00:22:22   is there is one place that can be down [TS]

00:22:23   to and get his communicator control and [TS]

00:22:26   then but they leave there and they can [TS]

00:22:27   it doesn't really make it why wouldn't [TS]

00:22:29   they just be like all know Botany Bay [TS]

00:22:31   no check off too reliant get us out of [TS]

00:22:33   here let's get out the shower i have a [TS]

00:22:35   simpler explanation [TS]

00:22:36   this is not the a team of stark know [TS]

00:22:38   these guys are on the Reliant looking [TS]

00:22:40   for dead for different roles is probably [TS]

00:22:44   you know we're not trusting these guys [TS]

00:22:46   to actually go out into the neutral zone [TS]

00:22:48   you don't want to exploring sinking [TS]

00:22:50   strange new worlds new life new symbols [TS]

00:22:52   that nobody wanted to find dead and you [TS]

00:22:54   can work for the Genesis people just [TS]

00:22:55   there right now whatever now right no [TS]

00:22:57   first contact for you that there is true [TS]

00:22:59   that when they stay they show the [TS]

00:23:01   Reliant bridge and the two crew members [TS]

00:23:02   are concerned they're they're hailing [TS]

00:23:04   accountant [TS]

00:23:05   what should be the ones which we do AG [TS]

00:23:08   give it a little shit sometime i'm sure [TS]

00:23:11   you could find it [TS]

00:23:12   yeah this is something on TV we can [TS]

00:23:15   watch your exactly and they never even [TS]

00:23:17   show them taking over the room because [TS]

00:23:19   they don't have to because these people [TS]

00:23:20   just like you know we surrender yeah [TS]

00:23:21   we're not going to network we're not [TS]

00:23:24   going to audition we're getting else no [TS]

00:23:25   self-destruct nothing we go out they go [TS]

00:23:28   outside of the cargo containers in there [TS]

00:23:30   they're all standing in the desert there [TS]

00:23:32   but the show up on sensors and they [TS]

00:23:33   bring Matt back inside and we know that [TS]

00:23:35   it's constant his bookshelf where he's [TS]

00:23:37   he's got a photographic memory and he [TS]

00:23:39   only has five books and he's been [TS]

00:23:40   married for 15 years so he's cranky and [TS]

00:23:42   he didn't quote every and when I missed [TS]

00:23:44   some sort of regulation yeah it's not [TS]

00:23:46   very no I mean this is why he's so mad [TS]

00:23:47   at Kirk is that correct left with like [TS]

00:23:49   five books for for for all eternity and [TS]

00:23:52   I don't make me mad too [TS]

00:23:53   it's like give me a kid no candles no [TS]

00:23:55   Tigers in the 23rd century it's one of [TS]

00:23:58   those other times one of those books [TS]

00:23:59   have been feed Jason yellowboy of Kirk [TS]

00:24:02   so right can we just say that content a [TS]

00:24:06   few years to think on this city was used [TS]

00:24:09   about it a little bit i'm doing it so [TS]

00:24:11   there's some shots in the in the cargo [TS]

00:24:13   containers the scene of cons people and [TS]

00:24:16   first off there's not sure if there's [TS]

00:24:18   not very many of them it's it's it's not [TS]

00:24:20   a big cast and they're all like 18 year [TS]

00:24:23   old blonde white people right con seems [TS]

00:24:26   to rule a largely headband and multiple [TS]

00:24:28   yet so which is weird because he's this [TS]

00:24:30   he's this eugenic Lee you know you know [TS]

00:24:33   Superman from India and yet he's got [TS]

00:24:36   like a bunch of suburban teenagers [TS]

00:24:38   following him [TS]

00:24:40   it's it's it very weird i don't really [TS]

00:24:42   understand that [TS]

00:24:43   the casting of that it doesn't i [TS]

00:24:45   expected that to be a you know a more [TS]

00:24:48   ethnically diverse and probably like age [TS]

00:24:50   diverse group unless the implication [TS]

00:24:52   there is that the kids were the only [TS]

00:24:54   ones who survived and all the older [TS]

00:24:56   people got heels in their heads except [TS]

00:24:58   for con I don't know I i seem to recall [TS]

00:25:00   though in space seed it was also a [TS]

00:25:02   similarly not averse crowd maybe that [TS]

00:25:05   says well I mean the enterprise itself [TS]

00:25:07   wasn't exactly what we call racially [TS]

00:25:09   diverse you know what actually the Jason [TS]

00:25:10   most of them or from various ethnic [TS]

00:25:13   backgrounds but the whole genetic [TS]

00:25:15   engineering thing [TS]

00:25:16   oh I see it turned a Mexican into an [TS]

00:25:18   indie I see if it's what i mean but they [TS]

00:25:21   got more than 15 years ago and these [TS]

00:25:22   people were like 19 so did con have a [TS]

00:25:24   was the secret of conscious that most of [TS]

00:25:26   the people who were frozen in it were [TS]

00:25:28   like four-year-olds was this like on [TS]

00:25:30   daycare and it's interesting he did aged [TS]

00:25:32   quite a bit and nobody else appeared to [TS]

00:25:34   ya anyway I are that start putting its [TS]

00:25:37   there's a possibility that they are they [TS]

00:25:40   they are the offspring of khan and his [TS]

00:25:42   wife they could all be his babies having [TS]

00:25:45   babies [TS]

00:25:45   Tom Jim Henson's cotton panties so [TS]

00:25:49   here's the thing we talked about how [TS]

00:25:51   good you know multiple bond he does lots [TS]

00:25:53   of lots of shouting and and great [TS]

00:25:56   over-the-top stuff but there-there is he [TS]

00:25:58   shows a little restraint very few places [TS]

00:26:01   in this movie but early on in this movie [TS]

00:26:03   he showed some great restraint that [TS]

00:26:05   right at the beginning when uh when maze [TS]

00:26:09   today I demand to know the meaning of [TS]

00:26:10   this and he has these create initial [TS]

00:26:12   lines which is you know you're in a [TS]

00:26:14   position to demand nothing and then he [TS]

00:26:16   starts sighs and says I am in a position [TS]

00:26:18   to grant nothing un un it's it's he [TS]

00:26:21   could have he could chew the scenery [TS]

00:26:23   with outline to and what I like about [TS]

00:26:25   that is that that's that moment when you [TS]

00:26:27   realize you know the ego that he has his [TS]

00:26:30   frustration at having been beaten and [TS]

00:26:32   been stewing about it for 15 years and [TS]

00:26:34   you know he's going to explode but it's [TS]

00:26:36   that it's a nice moment where you just [TS]

00:26:39   know he's he's a he's he's building up [TS]

00:26:44   his anger he's ready to explode yeah [TS]

00:26:45   Montalban hasn't you know he's not going [TS]

00:26:47   to go over the top two in order to [TS]

00:26:48   explode you first have to have to dial [TS]

00:26:51   it down a little bit so you have some [TS]

00:26:52   range and it's a nice moment where you [TS]

00:26:53   just send his frustration it's like you [TS]

00:26:55   know I I think so highly of me [TS]

00:26:57   self but I got nothing here this is [TS]

00:26:59   we've been living out of boxes for 15 [TS]

00:27:01   years [TS]

00:27:01   that's the fuse hissing as the sparkle [TS]

00:27:03   you have towards the body of the this is [TS]

00:27:06   setting out 45 but I looked at that [TS]

00:27:09   scene and i said and i have one you [TS]

00:27:11   choose like no he's not he's got mad and [TS]

00:27:14   and now he's like you could see the [TS]

00:27:16   wheels spinning like he's putting his [TS]

00:27:17   plan into action by I he's got something [TS]

00:27:22   here I was trying to figure out what [TS]

00:27:23   he's got and and how can he play it to [TS]

00:27:25   his advantage and you see it when he [TS]

00:27:27   says you know and check out those no [TS]

00:27:29   captain kirk captain because that [TS]

00:27:32   Admiral Curtis but that they promoted [TS]

00:27:36   that bone tries out all of the potential [TS]

00:27:40   life stress points all pronunciations [TS]

00:27:43   yes add mirror at mirror rah Commodore [TS]

00:27:49   no ad marrow Admiral Kirk never bothered [TS]

00:27:53   to check our progress and that's when [TS]

00:27:55   you start thinking about ya was that [TS]

00:27:57   list or idea current good [TS]

00:27:59   oh maybe not you know making a note of [TS]

00:28:01   it somewhere in a log [TS]

00:28:03   just so y'all know yeah maybe the rest [TS]

00:28:05   of the federal check on them send [TS]

00:28:07   someone out that now they just went [TS]

00:28:08   about their merry way that was what they [TS]

00:28:10   done anyway and then I started thinking [TS]

00:28:11   wow how many planets that these guys [TS]

00:28:13   drop how many civilizations because they [TS]

00:28:16   just did stuff and said not our problem [TS]

00:28:18   anymore you know wow we're destroying [TS]

00:28:21   civilization and their God in their [TS]

00:28:23   culture and now we're just going to move [TS]

00:28:24   right along [TS]

00:28:25   true but and you would think so check [TS]

00:28:27   off was there well he wasn't actually [TS]

00:28:28   there in the original show right right [TS]

00:28:30   you would the in this movie he [TS]

00:28:32   apparently was there because a con [TS]

00:28:34   recognizes him and so you would think [TS]

00:28:37   hey we are in this system i happen to [TS]

00:28:40   know who that we ruin these people at [TS]

00:28:42   city of 45 so while we're checking the [TS]

00:28:44   lifeless Ceti alpha six maybe mission [TS]

00:28:46   structure for that they're still there [TS]

00:28:48   just drop by and see how cons doing at [TS]

00:28:52   that party will just bought me a big pot [TS]

00:28:53   and you down the planets count the [TS]

00:28:56   planets a planet is missing [TS]

00:28:58   huh let's check closer huh the the [TS]

00:29:01   carpets are a little bit wrong the [TS]

00:29:03   missing planet shouldn't and that's when [TS]

00:29:05   I think there's a line [TS]

00:29:06   message on the screen a little alert [TS]

00:29:08   comes up a dialog box on the screen of [TS]

00:29:10   the Reliant that says recent things that [TS]

00:29:13   have happened in this system khan was [TS]

00:29:15   marooned here what it was disturbed by [TS]

00:29:19   it [TS]

00:29:20   planet exploded hurt never bother filing [TS]

00:29:23   a report with the Federation he was [TS]

00:29:24   never big on pillow it just never got [TS]

00:29:27   this area you mentioned it is Captain's [TS]

00:29:29   Log though I yeah at the end he [TS]

00:29:31   mentioned something about con reject the [TS]

00:29:34   captain at the captain's log with [TS]

00:29:35   Russian yeah I just like the best part [TS]

00:29:38   when I saw this in the theaters and [TS]

00:29:39   condos [TS]

00:29:40   I know you like 10 people in the [TS]

00:29:41   audience go no you don't you worn in [TS]

00:29:43   space down in the depths of the shipment [TS]

00:29:47   something in 1982 when you could get [TS]

00:29:49   netflix it did it was serious [TS]

00:29:51   I mean these people weren't absolutely [TS]

00:29:52   serious and I'm gonna accuse in that [TS]

00:29:55   Nicholas II know you guys really didn't [TS]

00:29:57   know each other or at that point checkup [TS]

00:29:59   was already showing his potential and [TS]

00:30:00   was like swabbing decks on the [TS]

00:30:02   enterprise no gearing him up his future [TS]

00:30:04   work on the remaining like 15 years [TS]

00:30:05   that's not yet with the monkeys haircut [TS]

00:30:09   yeah so so we shift gears from study of [TS]

00:30:12   45 to go back to the what we talked [TS]

00:30:14   about their we get the flyby of the [TS]

00:30:15   enterprise which shows a little bit of [TS]

00:30:17   restraint not coming because before you [TS]

00:30:19   get to that right at you get that really [TS]

00:30:21   gross scene they cut the Kirk and he's [TS]

00:30:24   sitting there with his reading glasses [TS]

00:30:25   on the shuttle yes totally [TS]

00:30:27   and i love that right the rest of the [TS]

00:30:29   world is about to explode and he's [TS]

00:30:31   sitting there with those granny glasses [TS]

00:30:33   on trying to read as a lot of these [TS]

00:30:34   newspapers they're flying up there and [TS]

00:30:36   it's like to me it was like great like [TS]

00:30:38   his world is about to fall apart yeah [TS]

00:30:40   the transition starts with the with Khan [TS]

00:30:43   saying where can I find James Kirk and [TS]

00:30:46   they got away to Kirk in the shuttle and [TS]

00:30:48   it looks for all the world like he's [TS]

00:30:49   sitting on the can [TS]

00:30:50   yeah reading the paper he's a book with [TS]

00:30:53   his pants down again I'm gonna sit there [TS]

00:30:56   smoking jacket on you know but not some [TS]

00:30:58   Klingon opera rod [TS]

00:30:59   just chilling out exactly what else I [TS]

00:31:02   also I i have a whole line here that I'm [TS]

00:31:04   not gonna get into too much about i'm [TS]

00:31:05   not convinced about the set eels biology [TS]

00:31:08   why wasn't that it was the only animal [TS]

00:31:09   on the entire planet who survived why [TS]

00:31:11   does it keep the young between its [TS]

00:31:12   spines what is the motivation to crawl [TS]

00:31:15   into a near why does it crawl out of [TS]

00:31:17   Chekhov's here at the end I don't really [TS]

00:31:19   understand that is puzzling that was [TS]

00:31:21   yeah that was a big is it not a hundred [TS]

00:31:22   percent fatal maybe sometimes they [TS]

00:31:24   decide to leave [TS]

00:31:25   other times they don't wanna kill you I [TS]

00:31:27   don't know it's a peculiar animal is all [TS]

00:31:30   I'm saying lied about that part [TS]

00:31:31   yes he didn't he didn't do a survey of [TS]

00:31:34   the planet to find out whether other [TS]

00:31:35   animals had survived liar he just [TS]

00:31:38   assumed that might have been what what [TS]

00:31:41   they were out doing when check off and [TS]

00:31:42   and the other captain arrived [TS]

00:31:44   well you know this is another one of [TS]

00:31:46   those worlds within its higher you know [TS]

00:31:48   just mono climate yeah it's the desert [TS]

00:31:50   well it used to have more climates but [TS]

00:31:52   but then then another planet exploded [TS]

00:31:54   inexplicably night there was life you [TS]

00:31:56   would given a fair chance this is [TS]

00:31:59   setting out for Scott is that good I [TS]

00:32:04   just going to keep doing that because i [TS]

00:32:05   know i'm just-just kit is good yeah that [TS]

00:32:08   you've ruined us all you've ruined it [TS]

00:32:09   for all of our lives and family members [TS]

00:32:11   best scenes and the court cases answer [TS]

00:32:13   to any question [TS]

00:32:15   ok so they get to get on the ship and [TS]

00:32:17   Kirk keeps walking around with that book [TS]

00:32:21   under his arm to throughout this which I [TS]

00:32:23   occasionally I will find myself [TS]

00:32:24   somewhere with a book under my arm and I [TS]

00:32:26   and i get i get all tense I'm like I'm [TS]

00:32:29   like Captain Kirk now I gotta book under [TS]

00:32:31   my arm it's very strange and and they [TS]

00:32:35   get on the bridge and there's this the [TS]

00:32:36   funny moment where spot gets out of the [TS]

00:32:38   chair and basically says his sonic how [TS]

00:32:40   many times you piloted ship out of space [TS]

00:32:41   to actually well I've never done it like [TS]

00:32:43   to do it take it out and then and then [TS]

00:32:45   Kirk and McCoy you're like holy cow what [TS]

00:32:47   Scott was back spark you drive the ship [TS]

00:32:50   don't I love the bones line there to [TS]

00:32:52   which you like right click here and and [TS]

00:32:55   the looks on their faces are so volatile [TS]

00:32:57   yeah you know a horrible and it's like [TS]

00:33:00   using your kid out to drive for the [TS]

00:33:01   first time you're standing in you know [TS]

00:33:04   the passenger seat you kind of have your [TS]

00:33:05   foot on an invisible break [TS]

00:33:07   trust me about that what I'm looking at [TS]

00:33:09   is how difficult is it to take the ship [TS]

00:33:11   out of stock involved [TS]

00:33:13   basically saying the following things [TS]

00:33:14   after oscars just one quarter and more [TS]

00:33:16   word that's ahead step grandmother said [TS]

00:33:19   warp nine [TS]

00:33:20   well having now seen galaxy quest i know [TS]

00:33:22   that it's harder than if you crash don't [TS]

00:33:24   blame Sulu at that point of lines [TS]

00:33:26   I mean soon what did you do I just said [TS]

00:33:28   forward why did you left I I didn't say [TS]

00:33:31   that spirit is their manual transmission [TS]

00:33:34   on the enterprise that I don't know what [TS]

00:33:36   what's nice about it is it it put Spock [TS]

00:33:39   in his role as a teacher right Kirk is [TS]

00:33:42   uncomfortable because Kirk wants to be [TS]

00:33:44   in the chair he wants to be in command [TS]

00:33:47   Spock doesn't need to be in the chair he [TS]

00:33:49   and he says this again later [TS]

00:33:51   he's he's here to teach her and make [TS]

00:33:53   give her that the first experience of [TS]

00:33:55   piloting the ship because she's his you [TS]

00:33:58   know officer that he's grooming for for [TS]

00:34:00   promotion and leadership and that's why [TS]

00:34:03   Spock is here and that's that's the [TS]

00:34:04   difference between Kirk and Spock is [TS]

00:34:05   kirk is the man of action [TS]

00:34:07   he wants to be in the chair giving [TS]

00:34:08   commands and Spock doesn't need it he's [TS]

00:34:10   just here to have his students learn so [TS]

00:34:13   but in this scene though it almost seems [TS]

00:34:15   like although it would be entirely [TS]

00:34:16   illogical that he's kind of dorky and [TS]

00:34:18   with Kirk because he sees him come in oh [TS]

00:34:20   yeah [TS]

00:34:20   his eyebrow go up notices that card box [TS]

00:34:22   and this is true then does he have [TS]

00:34:24   static come and take the Conn well yeah [TS]

00:34:26   but i think i think Spock throughout [TS]

00:34:28   these things is trying to teach calculus [TS]

00:34:30   incur keep saying you know is denying [TS]

00:34:32   himself and said throughout this movie [TS]

00:34:34   spot keeps trying to say look you know [TS]

00:34:35   what you may be middle-aged but this is [TS]

00:34:37   who you are you going to do this until [TS]

00:34:39   you die yeah so stop sitting there [TS]

00:34:41   pushing paper and I think he doesn't [TS]

00:34:43   intentionally just drive Kirk a little [TS]

00:34:44   bit crazy you know that the HU and that [TS]

00:34:46   should be you in that chair you you and [TS]

00:34:47   I both know you should be sitting there [TS]

00:34:49   not her and I'm gonna have her dry [TS]

00:34:51   yeah now see that is entirely logical [TS]

00:34:53   good work you go sit in the back in and [TS]

00:34:55   put your glasses on and read a book [TS]

00:34:56   called a Lincoln she's gonna say the [TS]

00:34:59   sentences that makes this Bashir move [TS]

00:35:01   yeah she's gonna tell he's gonna tell [TS]

00:35:03   Sulu to press the button because of our [TS]

00:35:05   head half a good job so then that [TS]

00:35:09   there's a there's a really nice scene [TS]

00:35:11   that win in the in the turbolift where [TS]

00:35:15   Kirk goes into the elevator and and and [TS]

00:35:19   he runs into sabic and she's got her [TS]

00:35:22   hair different her hair's down and she's [TS]

00:35:23   wearing like this kind of regulation [TS]

00:35:25   Starfleet [TS]

00:35:26   bath robe or something it's her straight [TS]

00:35:28   and and as a kid watching this on VHS [TS]

00:35:32   this scene was a couple of single shots [TS]

00:35:36   back and forth as they talk and then I [TS]

00:35:38   got the DVD in its letter box and it [TS]

00:35:40   turns out that the way they did this and [TS]

00:35:42   the DVD is it's a it's a single shot so [TS]

00:35:44   they they entered the turbolift in the [TS]

00:35:46   doors closed and there in one and by the [TS]

00:35:48   end of the scene they open again and [TS]

00:35:49   they're in someplace else so they've [TS]

00:35:51   obviously been like moving the set [TS]

00:35:52   around and the VHS version completely [TS]

00:35:54   ruins it by cutting back and forth but [TS]

00:35:56   what's cool about it is you know Kirk [TS]

00:35:59   ass about her hair and all of that which [TS]

00:36:01   is just kind of random and and and then [TS]

00:36:04   she asked about the Kobayashi Maru and [TS]

00:36:05   he he completely evades her and then she [TS]

00:36:10   leaves and and McCoy comes in and set [TS]

00:36:13   and does the question we always ask [TS]

00:36:14   who's been holding up the damn elevator [TS]

00:36:16   right because they pause these elevators [TS]

00:36:18   all the time and it's like how many [TS]

00:36:20   backup elevators Union and the [TS]

00:36:21   enterprise for people have conversations [TS]

00:36:22   like meetings are held in the elevators [TS]

00:36:24   and bone says like what the hell i'm [TS]

00:36:27   waiting for an elevator here she leaves [TS]

00:36:28   he comes in and then alignment kills me [TS]

00:36:31   and I just I love it for what it says [TS]

00:36:33   about bones and what it says about [TS]

00:36:34   courtesies it did she change her hair [TS]

00:36:36   and purchase i didn't notice wire first [TS]

00:36:40   and you know he noticed because she at [TS]

00:36:41   one point she goes for the button and he [TS]

00:36:43   actually flinches only pulls away [TS]

00:36:45   oh yeah oh my god what's going on well [TS]

00:36:48   just freaking out because it's sort of [TS]

00:36:50   like an intern being alone with you know [TS]

00:36:51   Bill Clinton and it's sort of like you [TS]

00:36:53   know its regulations are haha wow I'm [TS]

00:36:57   dressed properly a nice podcast and told [TS]

00:36:59   her about Kirk I think that's very [TS]

00:37:01   clearly he's done that so then Carol [TS]

00:37:03   Marcus comes up and that's actually a [TS]

00:37:04   really nice moment where bones like low [TS]

00:37:07   Carol Marcus ah and perk just gets [TS]

00:37:09   really pissed off and and and and bones [TS]

00:37:11   like sorry I you know geez I didn't [TS]

00:37:14   sensitive there but it's I i really love [TS]

00:37:16   that scene because there's so much going [TS]

00:37:17   on it this would be a good time probably [TS]

00:37:19   to point out how crucial bones at home [TS]

00:37:21   and enjoyment of Star Trek problem and [TS]

00:37:23   well he said such a great Harry during [TS]

00:37:25   his his delivery is fantastic he always [TS]

00:37:27   gets the best yawns it's the [TS]

00:37:30   cantankerous bastard is probably my [TS]

00:37:32   all-time favorite archetype and and I [TS]

00:37:35   don't think before anybody has done it [TS]

00:37:36   better than the forest Kelly in any TV [TS]

00:37:39   show that I can anytime [TS]

00:37:40   anything is being taken too seriously [TS]

00:37:41   you get bones in there in these needling [TS]

00:37:44   people and it doesn't matter who you can [TS]

00:37:46   needle kirky needle Spock hehe will [TS]

00:37:48   question the whole premise of something [TS]

00:37:50   just because he's cranky [TS]

00:37:52   it's great he is such a great goes well [TS]

00:37:55   there's a couple of great moments and [TS]

00:37:57   where we're not we're not quite there [TS]

00:37:58   yet there's one great line when they're [TS]

00:38:02   actually you know later on Spock says [TS]

00:38:05   then they are leaving its boxes be [TS]

00:38:07   careful Jim before he goes we will like [TS]

00:38:10   the classic of between India are these [TS]

00:38:14   are three people that have you know [TS]

00:38:15   grown older together they've been [TS]

00:38:17   through a lot together and you know that [TS]

00:38:20   they're just trying to help them get [TS]

00:38:21   through this midlife crisis and [TS]

00:38:23   fortunately there was a little crisis up [TS]

00:38:26   the universe coming longer to help this [TS]

00:38:29   yeah yeah absolutely it's everything [TS]

00:38:31   that that interaction the character [TS]

00:38:33   interaction is is one of the things that [TS]

00:38:35   makes the movie so much fun [TS]

00:38:38   so the next scene is we cut away to [TS]

00:38:42   space station regular one and at the end [TS]

00:38:45   the one seat scene where it's not just [TS]

00:38:47   sort of Carol and David but that you've [TS]

00:38:49   got like five or six other members of [TS]

00:38:51   the science team there and I just wanted [TS]

00:38:54   to mention that because they don't [TS]

00:38:56   really you know until they're dead [TS]

00:38:57   bodies are hanging upside down you don't [TS]

00:38:59   really see much of them and I feel like [TS]

00:39:01   there's an entire other movie here that [TS]

00:39:04   we don't see which is the story of the [TS]

00:39:07   science team that infants this amazing [TS]

00:39:10   thing and they're working with the [TS]

00:39:11   government to figure out where to deploy [TS]

00:39:13   it and then the thing gets perverted and [TS]

00:39:15   this you know the ship comes to take it [TS]

00:39:17   away but it turns out there these crazy [TS]

00:39:19   people who are like almost savage people [TS]

00:39:21   who come out and they they they attack [TS]

00:39:23   them and they're they're trying to buy [TS]

00:39:25   time for the people to escape and that [TS]

00:39:27   people are tortured but they don't give [TS]

00:39:28   up the information just like this [TS]

00:39:30   amazing other story about what happens [TS]

00:39:32   to the science team and we don't see any [TS]

00:39:35   of it right i mean we see them murmur [TS]

00:39:37   what do you mean that they're coming to [TS]

00:39:39   get our thing and then they're dead and [TS]

00:39:41   and we don't see the rest of its absence [TS]

00:39:43   but I think that's great because they [TS]

00:39:44   did not spend a lot of time in this [TS]

00:39:46   movie with stupid exposition there [TS]

00:39:48   aren't a whole lot of long speeches if [TS]

00:39:50   they made that today they would have [TS]

00:39:51   added on [TS]

00:39:52   another 40 minutes to tell that I'm sure [TS]

00:39:54   but I want to need like that in me as a [TS]

00:39:56   kid I read the read the novelization of [TS]

00:39:58   this of this movie and there's a little [TS]

00:40:00   bit more of character development of [TS]

00:40:01   these guys and and I think about that [TS]

00:40:03   every time I see them hanging upside [TS]

00:40:04   down with their throats got it's like oh [TS]

00:40:06   poor scientists they did you know [TS]

00:40:08   because it's kind of a nice story they [TS]

00:40:09   like they refused to answer common [TS]

00:40:11   questions they buy time for them to get [TS]

00:40:13   Genesis away but so there's that moment [TS]

00:40:15   here where we were we see them getting [TS]

00:40:17   upset that that Chekhov is said they're [TS]

00:40:19   going to come take Genesis away and we [TS]

00:40:21   know that bad things are gonna happen to [TS]

00:40:23   this poor our friends in the in the [TS]

00:40:25   science team and then you cut back to [TS]

00:40:27   the enterprise and once again the [TS]

00:40:30   enterprise's the only ship in the [TS]

00:40:31   quadrant that can deal with a with a [TS]

00:40:33   crisis absolutely no sense why would the [TS]

00:40:36   enterprise be the only ship in the [TS]

00:40:37   quadrant that has earth it has a very [TS]

00:40:40   City headquarters of Starfleet doesn't [TS]

00:40:43   make any sense i guess study alpha 5 is [TS]

00:40:44   a back with this is Ceti alpha 5 and but [TS]

00:40:48   not only that but don't they know the [TS]

00:40:49   run line isn't that quadrants [TS]

00:40:51   yeah it's true it's very close by so I I [TS]

00:40:54   have a theory that it's not the only [TS]

00:40:56   ship in the quadrant and it's really [TS]

00:40:57   just Kirk being like it's Carol Marcus [TS]

00:40:59   something's going on I want to take [TS]

00:41:00   control of the ship anyway [TS]

00:41:02   yeah we're the only ones really who are [TS]

00:41:04   closed um really so I'm gonna take over [TS]

00:41:07   now okay just let me know checkout is at [TS]

00:41:10   the helm of the reliance so there's that [TS]

00:41:12   they got a problem my sexy with Carol [TS]

00:41:14   Marcus is great because it's where [TS]

00:41:15   they're using AT&T to communicate so [TS]

00:41:17   it's not under century 80s the franchise [TS]

00:41:20   they can't keep a signal goes only one [TS]

00:41:21   bar that regular one that's right one [TS]

00:41:23   bar why it was right like talking on an [TS]

00:41:26   iphone in your idea what you say I can't [TS]

00:41:28   hello what up [TS]

00:41:31   it was programmed by the same gun is [TS]

00:41:32   auto pilot out of this big throughout [TS]

00:41:34   their static to which is funny because [TS]

00:41:36   now in a digital era there's no snow but [TS]

00:41:38   it's like TV static like [TS]

00:41:41   oh I could barely make you out let them [TS]

00:41:43   eat static yes exactly right [TS]

00:41:46   it's all it's all actually TV static but [TS]

00:41:48   what is this static of which you speak [TS]

00:41:50   let them eat MPEG artifacts haha that'll [TS]

00:41:54   teach me [TS]

00:41:55   let them eat skype interference but then [TS]

00:41:57   you have a great scene with Kirk and [TS]

00:41:59   Spock I think that's a fantastic see [TS]

00:42:00   yes I always like seeing Spock's [TS]

00:42:02   quarters because it looks for all the [TS]

00:42:03   world like that the anteroom of a [TS]

00:42:05   benihana expecting somebody to walk up [TS]

00:42:09   and ask if you want to sit in the dining [TS]

00:42:11   room or do you want tap on interesting [TS]

00:42:13   interesting i did make an i made a note [TS]

00:42:16   that says Spock's quarters kind of tacky [TS]

00:42:18   yeah he's not into the material things [TS]

00:42:22   he's just got a rug gonna thing hanging [TS]

00:42:25   on the wall a dreamcatcher maybe range [TS]

00:42:28   mirror made of pennies apparently yeah [TS]

00:42:30   and I swear to God that mirror with all [TS]

00:42:32   the lightbulbs my parents had that on [TS]

00:42:34   their wall shop in 1984 yeah well most [TS]

00:42:39   people don't know is that Spock really [TS]

00:42:41   was a fan of nineteen seventies [TS]

00:42:43   memorabilia and connected it yeah he's [TS]

00:42:46   got a Fleetwood Mac Fleetwood Mac [TS]

00:42:47   outside there's a lava lamp on his [TS]

00:42:48   bedside table that I believe that cut on [TS]

00:42:51   the internet you go it's only logical to [TS]

00:42:53   Remember Who khan was in space seed but [TS]

00:42:55   spock knew all about the lava lamp [TS]

00:42:57   exactly that's correct this is this is [TS]

00:42:58   the key scene that we're we're yes and [TS]

00:43:01   actually I i would like to pair it with [TS]

00:43:03   the scene that follows immediately which [TS]

00:43:04   is where cons right-hand man [TS]

00:43:07   yo Keem talks to him we can't you know [TS]

00:43:10   cons right-hand man is you walk him [TS]

00:43:12   yes lock in yes your walkie now I love n [TS]

00:43:15   jus he does say it you said at the end [TS]

00:43:18   he does said unlike some of the Star [TS]

00:43:19   Wars characters that Dan and John talked [TS]

00:43:21   about and they know them and they're [TS]

00:43:22   only actually named that because of [TS]

00:43:24   their action figure you're walking home [TS]

00:43:26   is actually named in the in the movie [TS]

00:43:28   it's justin scott he was in a bunch of [TS]

00:43:30   TV shows in the eighties if you'd like [TS]

00:43:31   to prefer to say that it's jason scott [TS]

00:43:33   from like the Phoenix and other random [TS]

00:43:36   shows that were on the eighties but [TS]

00:43:38   anyway so no I'm okay with lockheed [TS]

00:43:40   Milwaukee no always baby always be [TS]

00:43:42   walking to me that what you notice i [TS]

00:43:44   didn't know he was out of an issue or a [TS]

00:43:46   bubble wrap or something at one point [TS]

00:43:48   and that's how you knew his name no no [TS]

00:43:49   that's the only reason anybody knew the [TS]

00:43:50   lig 88 was exactly [TS]

00:43:52   no no he's actually mentioned move [TS]

00:43:54   unlike many of the Star Wars characters [TS]

00:43:55   so we get the needs of the many and the [TS]

00:43:57   needs of the few i have been and always [TS]

00:43:58   shall be your friend but what really is [TS]

00:44:00   great here is that Kirk is really [TS]

00:44:03   apologetic right he's like well there's [TS]

00:44:04   this thing and it's box-like take a ship [TS]

00:44:06   and critics like no no I don't want the [TS]

00:44:09   show [TS]

00:44:10   no no you just drop me on the getting [TS]

00:44:12   getting this year we just let me off [TS]

00:44:13   drop me off in yourself responsible time [TS]

00:44:15   time again you can command the ship full [TS]

00:44:17   of trainees and nothing bad will happen [TS]

00:44:19   to them yeah exactly right [TS]

00:44:22   surely there were not be at an emergency [TS]

00:44:23   of some kind that well well we forgot [TS]

00:44:26   that scene when he meets body when they [TS]

00:44:29   first get on there he goes over to one [TS]

00:44:31   of the trainees you like what's your [TS]

00:44:32   name and it's like I'm going he's dead [TS]

00:44:34   shirt and apparently movie categorize [TS]

00:44:37   guy at some point that guy is that I [TS]

00:44:39   think in the novelization that was like [TS]

00:44:41   studies it's actually think they shot [TS]

00:44:43   scenes and and cut them and they're in [TS]

00:44:45   the deleted scenes that is scotty's [TS]

00:44:47   nephew and there's there's more about [TS]

00:44:49   that makes it that much it actually is a [TS]

00:44:50   very sad scene when he dies and Scotty [TS]

00:44:52   said it doesn't really matter whether [TS]

00:44:54   he's relative or not he's got he's just [TS]

00:44:55   upset that he was doing his duty and me [TS]

00:44:58   and he died there there is a certain set [TS]

00:45:00   of logic that these not Scotty's nephew [TS]

00:45:02   isn't why the hell is he bringing this [TS]

00:45:04   one who guided the bridge instead of [TS]

00:45:05   sickbay because he's loopy from the fee [TS]

00:45:08   i mean is that they may be the place [TS]

00:45:11   maybe well he was he was the only one [TS]

00:45:12   that stayed at his post know what's [TS]

00:45:14   going well everybody else bailed and so [TS]

00:45:16   he was probably the one that was close [TS]

00:45:17   at hand so Scotty could come and present [TS]

00:45:19   him dramatically [TS]

00:45:20   yeah yeah that's right here that's right [TS]

00:45:22   that's the young kid in the war movie [TS]

00:45:23   you know he's dead he's got seconds to [TS]

00:45:26   show me that that's 23rd century this is [TS]

00:45:28   the first they don't have any red shirts [TS]

00:45:30   anymore they're all wearing red shirts [TS]

00:45:31   we now have the white guys white [TS]

00:45:33   jumpsuit guy white is the new red yeah [TS]

00:45:36   so so I'm so I i like and one other [TS]

00:45:40   thing that I noticed at in the scene [TS]

00:45:43   where they enter and Spock is sitting [TS]

00:45:44   there and maybe this is just common lore [TS]

00:45:46   amongst the Star Trek fans but Spock is [TS]

00:45:49   actually sitting there meditating with [TS]

00:45:51   the live long and prosper hands going oh [TS]

00:45:54   he's got it he's got his hands together [TS]

00:45:56   and kind of a praying way but his [TS]

00:45:58   fingers are separated [TS]

00:45:59   live long and prosper style that's how [TS]

00:46:01   they do it on Vulcan man and how they [TS]

00:46:03   roll that is so so so this box has taken [TS]

00:46:08   ship look I'm here as a teacher you know [TS]

00:46:10   you should be in charge anyway and I [TS]

00:46:12   want to get the counterpoint is with [TS]

00:46:15   your welcome and con is your items like [TS]

00:46:18   dude we got a ship or three [TS]

00:46:20   we're not on the sand planet anymore we [TS]

00:46:22   can go anywhere we want [TS]

00:46:23   let's get out of here and cut his condo [TS]

00:46:26   no I gotta get Kirk it doesn't matter of [TS]

00:46:29   your high heat ask me that's I mean [TS]

00:46:32   that's it you know [TS]

00:46:33   easy and I said that's the point where [TS]

00:46:34   Kirk becomes the white well right at [TS]

00:46:36   that scene yeah and you know these guys [TS]

00:46:38   are just too loyal to him and they're [TS]

00:46:40   not going to say no but you can think on [TS]

00:46:42   my god this you know he's lost it [TS]

00:46:44   we could be out of here we got the [TS]

00:46:46   remaining because we captured the [TS]

00:46:48   dumbest ruined in the Federation yeah [TS]

00:46:50   what do we need this work and he'll try [TS]

00:46:52   that again [TS]

00:46:53   no we're going to see that movie where [TS]

00:46:55   he goes later and we got Genesis we got [TS]

00:46:58   through a lot of what more do you want [TS]

00:47:00   let's get out of here now what's [TS]

00:47:02   interesting though is he does later [TS]

00:47:03   actually listen to what [TS]

00:47:05   joaquim says to him and he actually [TS]

00:47:07   forget what the point is but oh when [TS]

00:47:11   they're they're damaged and they're [TS]

00:47:12   forced to pull away right [TS]

00:47:14   he actually leaves us with your not so [TS]

00:47:15   far gone that he won't listen to his is [TS]

00:47:17   like whenever he fights first first the [TS]

00:47:19   argument right now and he goes and goes [TS]

00:47:21   you know commander is it that there is [TS]

00:47:23   some degree you could see that he said [TS]

00:47:25   some grip on reality but every so often [TS]

00:47:28   he slips kind of back into that madness [TS]

00:47:32   but right there is a thing there with [TS]

00:47:35   the council on the advice that he's [TS]

00:47:37   getting that's sort of when we get the [TS]

00:47:38   sense that this is now personal this is [TS]

00:47:41   no longer you know I you know that this [TS]

00:47:44   is nuts the band of marauders he's after [TS]

00:47:46   Admiral Kirk and I think the fact that [TS]

00:47:47   he made Admirals but pushed him over the [TS]

00:47:49   edge at marijuana that was it at at mira [TS]

00:47:53   that just push them over it and Tamara [TS]

00:47:57   at this point I made a note that is [TS]

00:48:00   common is a little obsessed with Kirk [TS]

00:48:05   analysis very good insight yes thank you [TS]

00:48:08   agree agree how did you catch that it's [TS]

00:48:11   subtle [TS]

00:48:12   it's subtle most of us would have missed [TS]

00:48:13   it it's true you have to really pay [TS]

00:48:15   attention to pick up that subtlety of [TS]

00:48:17   his performance is very cold you're [TS]

00:48:20   walking City le Larry it is where i am a [TS]

00:48:23   third watch you'll see it now i think [TS]

00:48:26   around the 30 second time i got so the [TS]

00:48:28   Genesis briefing room seemed the first [TS]

00:48:32   major like CGI in a movie [TS]

00:48:34   remember when retinal scans were science [TS]

00:48:36   fiction so I i would have my notes say I [TS]

00:48:39   get a retina scan of the doctor every [TS]

00:48:40   year its there's a picture shows you top [TS]

00:48:44   secret information [TS]

00:48:45   yeah I think about that scene every time [TS]

00:48:47   identify for retinal scan and it's like [TS]

00:48:50   yeah it looks good [TS]

00:48:52   come back next year but but it you know [TS]

00:48:55   we don't have glaucoma [TS]

00:48:56   yeah and this is where McCoy is again at [TS]

00:48:58   his cranky best right which is like you [TS]

00:49:01   green-blooded Vulcan this is bad spots [TS]

00:49:04   like whatever and in Japanese and you [TS]

00:49:07   know what I'm thinking I'm thinking this [TS]

00:49:09   is a kickstarter video it is it is sure [TS]

00:49:12   that's right it's the root cause up if [TS]

00:49:14   you give us up if we get enough backers [TS]

00:49:16   and frankly you know for 500 credits you [TS]

00:49:20   will get my call planet of your own will [TS]

00:49:22   take your visit the moon will just do [TS]

00:49:23   something for you [TS]

00:49:24   they really kind of blow it though [TS]

00:49:26   because they talked up and how it's a [TS]

00:49:27   life generating device but they don't [TS]

00:49:29   make any mention at all of how it's [TS]

00:49:30   apparently also a water and atmosphere [TS]

00:49:32   generated and and son it creates a [TS]

00:49:35   sun-times it does a lot of haha cool [TS]

00:49:38   stuff even indoors it creates a son [TS]

00:49:41   it's amazing it is it but I don't don't [TS]

00:49:43   but no the Kickstarter like bonuses if [TS]

00:49:45   you take it to 1 million credits then [TS]

00:49:48   we'll make dragons that's just so that's [TS]

00:49:52   just a little sweetener if we get to a [TS]

00:49:54   million obviously you can have your own [TS]

00:49:56   species yeah and if you have one guy do [TS]

00:49:58   all the fields for you slide apart fast [TS]

00:50:00   he'll Brandon struck me as you know I [TS]

00:50:02   said this is like 23rd century [TS]

00:50:03   Kickstarter they're putting it out there [TS]

00:50:05   is kickstarter video and the [TS]

00:50:07   Federation's alright will find you and I [TS]

00:50:08   will give the other is just the venture [TS]

00:50:10   capital arm arm you said they only put [TS]

00:50:12   enough to get the t-shirt though [TS]

00:50:13   yeah yeah and and the Reliant what [TS]

00:50:16   and you know someone had a good copy of [TS]

00:50:20   photoshop and rendering program is just [TS]

00:50:22   the demo showing you were just showing [TS]

00:50:24   you some graphic that's a little CTR [TS]

00:50:25   it's pretty basic bond it's all done in [TS]

00:50:29   flash 23rd century flash [TS]

00:50:31   oh I love I did you love one bit though [TS]

00:50:32   in that briefing well tube it's actually [TS]

00:50:34   the first is that is that I'd i love how [TS]

00:50:36   Kirk always sort of half rolls his eyes [TS]

00:50:38   when spot goes on what is magical and [TS]

00:50:40   there's a great instances where are we [TS]

00:50:43   going to do this again talking he's [TS]

00:50:46   talking to bones about logic and [TS]

00:50:47   incorrect size just go to the rainbow [TS]

00:50:51   over the other side of his head it's [TS]

00:50:53   it's a great scene and McCoys ranting [TS]

00:50:55   about them around that's what this thing [TS]

00:50:56   right it doesn't be used as a weapon for [TS]

00:50:59   of it as a weapon my god and furthermore [TS]

00:51:03   Spock there is great too which is you [TS]

00:51:05   must learn to govern your passions they [TS]

00:51:07   will be your undoing which is given the [TS]

00:51:09   way this movie plays out is is prescient [TS]

00:51:11   in a different way [TS]

00:51:12   interesting yeah yes all right space [TS]

00:51:15   battle this is this is for my money I [TS]

00:51:18   think this is the best sort of like [TS]

00:51:20   tactical space battle scene that I've [TS]

00:51:23   ever seen and I there are Star Wars Star [TS]

00:51:26   Wars movies we've got the fleet of ships [TS]

00:51:28   and they're all coming on pew pew and [TS]

00:51:30   they're moving around are very exciting [TS]

00:51:31   but you know I never really get much of [TS]

00:51:34   a sense of tactics from that whereas in [TS]

00:51:35   star trek to we've got you know two [TS]

00:51:38   ships and and it's like a battled see or [TS]

00:51:41   a submarine battle it's it's it's a [TS]

00:51:43   one-on-one kind of thing and then you [TS]

00:51:45   can actually understand where they are [TS]

00:51:48   which in modern action movies is [TS]

00:51:50   actually quite rare and what they're [TS]

00:51:52   doing and what the strategy is first [TS]

00:51:54   when the Reliant sneak sort of sneaks up [TS]

00:51:57   right in plain view on the enterprise [TS]

00:51:58   and blows them away before they can turn [TS]

00:52:00   on their shields and then the the [TS]

00:52:03   reversal that happens at the end of the [TS]

00:52:04   scene just so much tension the music [TS]

00:52:07   James Horner's music is great in this [TS]

00:52:09   whole movie but here it's a it's State [TS]

00:52:12   Building vacuum is that starts coming up [TS]

00:52:14   the music builds and these were awake [TS]

00:52:16   capital ships should be finding they're [TS]

00:52:18   not dog fighting i'm gonna find around [TS]

00:52:21   each other and then you know is it with [TS]

00:52:23   joysticks is and perhaps later films we [TS]

00:52:25   discovered that the enterprise can be [TS]

00:52:26   flown by a joystick [TS]

00:52:28   but what I loved about this was here's [TS]

00:52:33   where we see Kirk slipping up he's a [TS]

00:52:35   half's he's literally a half-step to [TS]

00:52:38   slow and I i remember seeing this movie [TS]

00:52:42   even last night I was watching your [TS]

00:52:44   screaming raise the shield yeah that [TS]

00:52:46   states the racing shields [TS]

00:52:48   yes and and they're charging faces yes [TS]

00:52:52   and and they're locking on target [TS]

00:52:53   yes and I didn't uh it does support his [TS]

00:52:57   theory that he's going senile to be [TS]

00:52:58   honest [TS]

00:52:59   well that's why i said he is he really [TS]

00:53:02   is a half step slower this is where he [TS]

00:53:05   gets sort of shaking out of this [TS]

00:53:06   complacency and shakes the rest off [TS]

00:53:08   though i think is is this moment yes but [TS]

00:53:11   but true to your point he's still miles [TS]

00:53:13   better than every other commander in [TS]

00:53:14   Starfleet in spite of everything lost [TS]

00:53:17   his step [TS]

00:53:18   but once again seen that I love he's [TS]

00:53:20   looking up the prefix though he's got to [TS]

00:53:22   put the damn glasses on because he can [TS]

00:53:23   speak just the second card i gotta put [TS]

00:53:28   my hearing aid in got glasses on its [TS]

00:53:30   second turn around and say hi to tell [TS]

00:53:33   Conda to wait for him that I love that [TS]

00:53:35   it's whip them off turns around tells [TS]

00:53:36   con hold it and then put them back on so [TS]

00:53:38   we can look again and it grew up in it [TS]

00:53:40   as a theater actor and there's some of [TS]

00:53:42   this theatrical flourishes of the got [TS]

00:53:43   the glasses and it's coming through now [TS]

00:53:45   con but this is so great because you see [TS]

00:53:47   the wheel starting to spin with kirk and [TS]

00:53:49   this is the the archetypal Captain Kirk [TS]

00:53:52   has a trick to pull from the original [TS]

00:53:54   series which is he's figuring it out and [TS]

00:53:56   there's that I love the moment where he [TS]

00:53:57   says keep nodding like I'm still giving [TS]

00:53:59   orders but it's just not just keep it no [TS]

00:54:03   ever tell you that I gotta say I'm [TS]

00:54:05   working it out now [TS]

00:54:06   i do question the security ramifications [TS]

00:54:08   of being able to have a five digit pin [TS]

00:54:10   number to control some any random [TS]

00:54:13   because I had never thought of that [TS]

00:54:15   before as i watch this but I was like [TS]

00:54:17   what you can take over another starship [TS]

00:54:20   if you know a five-digit code my [TS]

00:54:22   password to get into my email is longer [TS]

00:54:25   than the code you need to take over a [TS]

00:54:28   Federation starship I i think it's i [TS]

00:54:30   think it's the Kirk as an admiral and [TS]

00:54:33   and they're on the enterprise they've [TS]

00:54:34   got like the the master key and then [TS]

00:54:37   they also need the encryption pin and [TS]

00:54:39   it's supposed to stop the runaway [TS]

00:54:40   starships yeah five digits and [TS]

00:54:42   and they're not even input on like a [TS]

00:54:43   like a number pad their input on a [TS]

00:54:45   series of individual switches and 0 [TS]

00:54:48   through 9 [TS]

00:54:49   what thats that's the tricky part though [TS]

00:54:52   you need to know the sequence of [TS]

00:54:53   switches yeah that is exactly what he [TS]

00:54:55   said I'm drop down down left right left [TS]

00:54:59   right be a their shields are dropping [TS]

00:55:02   there was one other thing in that scene [TS]

00:55:06   that I thought was a little bit strange [TS]

00:55:09   because he calls out Scotty oh do we [TS]

00:55:11   have anything now we're dead in the [TS]

00:55:12   water and purchase try the auxiliary [TS]

00:55:14   power is guys like oh yeah okay I didn't [TS]

00:55:16   think I think that everything smells [TS]

00:55:19   really good hour on the ship so so I'm [TS]

00:55:22   the C batteries in the warp drive we're [TS]

00:55:25   going to get so when you watch this back [TS]

00:55:27   one of the things that that is [TS]

00:55:29   fascinating knowing every single bead of [TS]

00:55:31   this movie is to watch the setups and [TS]

00:55:34   and we see the the mechanism for knowing [TS]

00:55:38   but shields are up or down like four [TS]

00:55:40   times before the moment where he drops [TS]

00:55:43   the shields on them and so when that [TS]

00:55:46   moment comes [TS]

00:55:47   you're like oh I know what's happening [TS]

00:55:48   at the little dots are leaving around [TS]

00:55:49   the ship and that means their shields [TS]

00:55:51   are down but they they set it up there's [TS]

00:55:53   like you know there's multiple shots of [TS]

00:55:55   different times of shields coming up or [TS]

00:55:56   down showing that screen and it is such [TS]

00:55:59   a wonderful moment I mean I know it's [TS]

00:56:00   just it's it's a they invented something [TS]

00:56:04   so it's in some ways it's a deus ex [TS]

00:56:06   machina but you know i love that it's [TS]

00:56:09   it's showing the characters thinking [TS]

00:56:11   about you know Kirk's advantages the [TS]

00:56:14   Kirk knows the rules here and even [TS]

00:56:15   though he's he has blown it by being a [TS]

00:56:18   step too slow [TS]

00:56:19   he knows things and this this ends up [TS]

00:56:22   being cons on doing at the end to in the [TS]

00:56:23   final fight scene is you know client is [TS]

00:56:25   brilliant but he's obsessed [TS]

00:56:27   that's one problem and the second [TS]

00:56:29   problem is the con is not from he's from [TS]

00:56:31   the 20th century and Kirk knows the [TS]

00:56:33   rules that he doesn't know and and so [TS]

00:56:36   knowing the prefix code and and this [TS]

00:56:38   time Kirk doesn't hesitate right he's [TS]

00:56:40   like drop the shields [TS]

00:56:42   fire fire fire and there we go for the [TS]

00:56:46   first time his age is not on our up on [TS]

00:56:48   liability [TS]

00:56:49   he's got experience he knows right any [TS]

00:56:52   lectures you'll have to know just you [TS]

00:56:53   know how things were going to know why [TS]

00:56:55   they were [TS]

00:56:56   right but we should know from space seed [TS]

00:56:58   though that Khan has studied the [TS]

00:56:59   technical manuals of the enterprise fish [TS]

00:57:03   really should be something that's in [TS]

00:57:05   there but he didn't think to to change [TS]

00:57:08   the prefix codes and he forgot his nine [TS]

00:57:10   right I guess that wasn't in the tech [TS]

00:57:12   manual I've it would have been nice if [TS]

00:57:14   there had been the scene where your [TS]

00:57:15   argument comes up into sir I think we [TS]

00:57:16   should change the prefixes no no thats [TS]

00:57:20   want him without history fix coat and an [TS]

00:57:23   expression of a space that's the first [TS]

00:57:25   time you see the old Kirk when he goes [TS]

00:57:27   here it comes on to number you just [TS]

00:57:31   stand by their side over its on the legs [TS]

00:57:34   and you know he would have just turned [TS]

00:57:35   change the password to Ceti alpha five [TS]

00:57:37   so really you could've guessed it easily [TS]

00:57:41   and then yeah might as well now a [TS]

00:57:43   question for the the star trek that I [TS]

00:57:45   don't you want to the shield's actually [TS]

00:57:47   turn on slowly around the ship as they [TS]

00:57:49   appear to in the in the overhead display [TS]

00:57:52   that is if you have the dramatic setting [TS]

00:57:54   on on your shields yes they should they [TS]

00:57:57   had a comment I would you turn that off [TS]

00:57:58   I did you have to charge you know it [TS]

00:58:00   makes a certain amount of sense is super [TS]

00:58:03   excited that we've ever seen some of [TS]

00:58:05   these systems in operation i thought [TS]

00:58:07   they played out pretty logical yeah i'm [TS]

00:58:09   just wondering if that ever comes up in [TS]

00:58:10   a film or an emphasis as the shields are [TS]

00:58:14   traveling slowly around the back and [TS]

00:58:16   never somebody shoots him in the back [TS]

00:58:18   never see the shield's I mean it's [TS]

00:58:20   really only the device of like you know [TS]

00:58:21   shields are down to twenty percent we [TS]

00:58:23   can't take another hit like that you [TS]

00:58:25   know that kind of that kind of thing [TS]

00:58:26   this is this is a closed complex shield [TS]

00:58:29   kind of thing and star trek because it's [TS]

00:58:31   like to go up and down and it actually [TS]

00:58:32   actually matters whether it's up or down [TS]

00:58:35   there's something technical about it [TS]

00:58:36   it's like you know they also like the [TS]

00:58:38   battery on my phone you know what [TS]

00:58:40   minutes a hundred percent next not a [TS]

00:58:41   10-percent there's no wonder these [TS]

00:58:46   things for a hundred percent next minute [TS]

00:58:47   they're about like this field can take [TS]

00:58:48   one it would be interesting if i press [TS]

00:58:49   the sleep button on my iPhone and [TS]

00:58:51   instead of just shutting off when do [TS]

00:58:52   people around the edges and then went [TS]

00:58:55   off that would be the best bit about [TS]

00:58:57   that tactical that whole battle scene [TS]

00:58:59   though is as always is the case in Star [TS]

00:59:02   Trek is the reaction of the crew and [TS]

00:59:06   that and the command team when they get [TS]

00:59:09   hit but there's nothing more wonderful [TS]

00:59:12   than seeing guys hurl themselves across [TS]

00:59:15   the parade there's a champion that first [TS]

00:59:17   shot that they take there's a guy and [TS]

00:59:19   you gotta watch for it [TS]

00:59:20   who is screaming and his body just flies [TS]

00:59:22   on I totally nominate him for the the [TS]

00:59:25   successor to the wilhelm scream because [TS]

00:59:27   it is a fantastic screen he lets out [TS]

00:59:29   he's flying all the way actually then [TS]

00:59:32   hurls himself all the way across the [TS]

00:59:34   bridge from one side to the other [TS]

00:59:36   it's magnificent there is some mayhem [TS]

00:59:38   going on there and i love that scene [TS]

00:59:40   also right before they just over the [TS]

00:59:42   bridge [TS]

00:59:42   it's not clear why he does that they're [TS]

00:59:44   not any safer off the bridge but it's [TS]

00:59:46   like he doesn't want to screw up is his [TS]

00:59:48   subject and they don't know about the [TS]

00:59:50   prefix codes and they're not going to be [TS]

00:59:51   good actors this is between me and [TS]

00:59:52   Connie won't nod as if i'm giving orders [TS]

00:59:55   so they're going to get it will be like [TS]

00:59:57   what you're not giving orders captain [TS]

00:59:58   I I Admiral Kirk up [TS]

00:59:58   I I Admiral Kirk up [TS]

01:00:00   very confused what's going on i also [TS]

01:00:01   love how parts of the bridge just sort [TS]

01:00:02   of spontaneously burst into flame even [TS]

01:00:05   though one would assume that the bridge [TS]

01:00:06   is insulated from the outer Hall by at [TS]

01:00:09   least a couple hundred yards [TS]

01:00:10   it's the manual exfoliation Kobayashi [TS]

01:00:12   Maru simulation but the console that [TS]

01:00:15   Kirk is that is is always it's like [TS]

01:00:17   somebody just little barbecue right in [TS]

01:00:19   fact that there's like a hibachi going [TS]

01:00:21   on in the background space wiring is [TS]

01:00:23   hard Steve space wiring and right you [TS]

01:00:25   know it's clear that that someone has [TS]

01:00:27   been giving payoffs to the Federation [TS]

01:00:29   electrical engineering inspectors goes [TS]

01:00:32   to the lowest bid contractor so that's [TS]

01:00:34   right this is what happens when it's out [TS]

01:00:36   there and first line of a thing right [TS]

01:00:39   everything's blowing up so let's see I [TS]

01:00:41   guess they go there at that point they [TS]

01:00:43   go to regular one because they beaten [TS]

01:00:45   con off and maybe they need to go find [TS]

01:00:47   out what's going on and we get some [TS]

01:00:49   nicer weather first there's the gym be [TS]

01:00:51   careful [TS]

01:00:52   we will we will I love that and then [TS]

01:00:55   they said absolutely go over to this [TS]

01:00:58   empty space station and again some [TS]

01:01:01   almost again i want i want to say that I [TS]

01:01:03   mean it's star star trek movie but I [TS]

01:01:04   almost sense a little bit of the set the [TS]

01:01:06   influence of alien here in the sense [TS]

01:01:08   that they do try to stretch this out [TS]

01:01:09   words like empty space ship these long [TS]

01:01:12   slope and you actually see hora she's [TS]

01:01:14   married but she's been conveniently [TS]

01:01:15   they're only able to find indeterminate [TS]

01:01:17   life site because their scanners are [TS]

01:01:19   there's the scene with the mouse [TS]

01:01:21   yeah those are the other way I have my [TS]

01:01:23   notes to reminds me Ali this was two [TS]

01:01:25   years or three years after Alan came out [TS]

01:01:27   and you kept waiting for something [TS]

01:01:29   really got to the bone time bones turns [TS]

01:01:32   around and there's like eight dead [TS]

01:01:34   bodies hanging out which is kind of you [TS]

01:01:36   know Star Trek that's kind of rough [TS]

01:01:37   that's kind of like I I jumped the first [TS]

01:01:40   time I saw that yeah that was also know [TS]

01:01:42   as a scary it was pretty gruesome to is [TS]

01:01:45   there like a lowering them down [TS]

01:01:48   yeah i love that that hora is muted but [TS]

01:01:51   you see her she's still trying to hail [TS]

01:01:52   cuz you know whether or not she's like [TS]

01:01:54   hello hello hello [TS]

01:01:56   and finally Kirstie Alley opens up her [TS]

01:01:58   computer and communicator and goes we're [TS]

01:02:00   fine out like shut up shut up or [TS]

01:02:03   business just say something about these [TS]

01:02:04   communicators with these like Nokia [TS]

01:02:06   casts off from radioshack was like big [TS]

01:02:09   they're conky they're ugly too thick but [TS]

01:02:11   they're also super wide it's like the [TS]

01:02:13   gala [TS]

01:02:13   c-note communicator yes it's like super [TS]

01:02:16   wide it's a redundant circuitry and I [TS]

01:02:21   just went back to check this because i [TS]

01:02:23   have structure one and back then they [TS]

01:02:25   had risk communities in the first movie [TS]

01:02:27   they had slimmed everything down [TS]

01:02:28   figuring technology advanced this looks [TS]

01:02:30   like something that picked up at radio [TS]

01:02:31   shack on the way out the door their [TS]

01:02:33   style maybe I'm stylish my theory was [TS]

01:02:35   trainees you know we don't give him the [TS]

01:02:37   good equipment they're gonna use these [TS]

01:02:38   old communicators in a war surplus stuff [TS]

01:02:40   we got laying around from the eugenics [TS]

01:02:41   technology doesn't usually get bigger [TS]

01:02:43   but they between the original series in [TS]

01:02:45   this movie that the great has got a lot [TS]

01:02:47   bigger but i think they wanted to go [TS]

01:02:48   back to the whole I want to think that [TS]

01:02:51   they flip open and looks like the old [TS]

01:02:53   star trek communicators did but let's [TS]

01:02:55   make them bigger and clunkier yeah and [TS]

01:02:59   you know if this really looks like i [TS]

01:03:00   don't know something from like the 1950s [TS]

01:03:03   science movie fiction movies it was one [TS]

01:03:05   of those little continuity things that [TS]

01:03:06   just gonna bug me that in the flat that [TS]

01:03:09   Kirk spends the rest of the movie with [TS]

01:03:10   his tunic unbuttoned bugs the hell out [TS]

01:03:13   of me for some reason let's stay just [TS]

01:03:14   like that i don't know what that's their [TS]

01:03:16   other than show me like you know the [TS]

01:03:18   blood that he's still there but now I [TS]

01:03:20   went back and looked and he actually [TS]

01:03:21   unbuttons that himself on purpose yeah [TS]

01:03:24   he's walking across the ground shortly [TS]

01:03:26   after they get shot [TS]

01:03:27   yeah so it's I think it's just he's [TS]

01:03:29   wearing himself out exactly [TS]

01:03:30   yeah and there's a lot of apparently [TS]

01:03:32   stuff that you can buy the Starfleet you [TS]

01:03:34   know what I don't know swag store [TS]

01:03:36   because now they have waiting jackets [TS]

01:03:38   that you can wear with nice buckles on [TS]

01:03:41   and then Kirk's where it is using the [TS]

01:03:43   data so you can give them to your [TS]

01:03:44   girlfriend when she's cold in the [TS]

01:03:45   Genesis kid it was like a leather jacket [TS]

01:03:47   uh yeah it is it's the space leather [TS]

01:03:50   jacket i like the Stars leather jacket [TS]

01:03:52   but if you if you're gonna happen long [TS]

01:03:53   enough you get a Letterman's jacket with [TS]

01:03:55   a high collar and he wears his up with [TS]

01:03:58   the highway to do it i'm a i-i-i gotta [TS]

01:04:00   love the boots got the high collar but [TS]

01:04:01   what is with the design of that though [TS]

01:04:03   that that short with that with the one [TS]

01:04:06   thing hanging down that I mean was this [TS]

01:04:08   new kids inspired or you can do several [TS]

01:04:10   years later it [TS]

01:04:11   I know but that why you know patent [TS]

01:04:13   leather belt buckle up right now [TS]

01:04:15   Starfleet units by oshkosh b'gosh yeah [TS]

01:04:18   yeah it's oh in the chatroom somebody [TS]

01:04:20   points out that that Kirk opens his his [TS]

01:04:22   vest because con he's got a little chest [TS]

01:04:25   out [TS]

01:04:26   he wants a man cleavage and in the [TS]

01:04:28   original Star Trek his shirts were [TS]

01:04:29   always ripped and fight so he's me [TS]

01:04:31   that's as close to season comes to [TS]

01:04:32   unbuckle it that the regular one seems I [TS]

01:04:35   mean me that the creepiness kind of [TS]

01:04:37   continues to because then they go to the [TS]

01:04:38   did the transporter room and it's left [TS]

01:04:40   running and abandoned and they're like [TS]

01:04:42   well there's some coordinates here but [TS]

01:04:45   well first we see checkoff back wanna [TS]

01:04:48   there there in the crate right they open [TS]

01:04:50   the crate and they're like eyes rolled [TS]

01:04:52   back in their heads like maybe they're [TS]

01:04:53   dead right we don't know what they are [TS]

01:04:55   but then we discovered that walter [TS]

01:04:57   Koenig is a really bad they put what [TS]

01:04:59   your shirt on audio general or deny the [TS]

01:05:04   creature all their value and sa lie [TS]

01:05:07   that's the madness that is promised by [TS]

01:05:09   come thing but they said they put [TS]

01:05:11   creatures illness and McCoys then there [TS]

01:05:12   may be getting a quick scale yeah [TS]

01:05:14   they're creatures still in oh yeah but [TS]

01:05:16   maybe you guys want to stay here you [TS]

01:05:17   want to come down with us and we we [TS]

01:05:19   brought the we brought the antiquated [TS]

01:05:20   tricorders so i will pick up later [TS]

01:05:23   I'm sure nothing bad can happen we let [TS]

01:05:25   you out of this create their creatures [TS]

01:05:26   in your head [TS]

01:05:27   come with us so they beam down to the [TS]

01:05:28   empty to the empty coordinates which is [TS]

01:05:31   again that creepy moment of like they [TS]

01:05:33   bought time to get they didn't get down [TS]

01:05:34   this far and and and of course there's a [TS]

01:05:38   funny McCoy line where where I another [TS]

01:05:40   record suppose they win your heart you [TS]

01:05:41   know where well it's your best it's your [TS]

01:05:44   chance to get away from it all and I [TS]

01:05:45   don't know what if that's what you want [TS]

01:05:46   me to say we got nothing with this is [TS]

01:05:47   the only option bone so you want to stay [TS]

01:05:49   here with the rats no dead bodies no [TS]

01:05:52   okay energized and another this is a [TS]

01:05:54   foreshadow that i get i think they might [TS]

01:05:56   have overplayed a little bit if we go by [TS]

01:05:59   mobile look that is like I like mrs. Sam [TS]

01:06:04   this is the biggest problem i have with [TS]

01:06:06   the movie is that at a two year old [TS]

01:06:09   chimpanzee could figure out this [TS]

01:06:11   situation of genetics Superman whereas [TS]

01:06:14   the genetically modified brilliant con [TS]

01:06:16   somehow completely misses that hours and [TS]

01:06:19   days and was too busy focused on how [TS]

01:06:22   clever he is that he's he's [TS]

01:06:23   eavesdropping and why can all of their [TS]

01:06:26   communications be encrypted [TS]

01:06:27   yeah well it's a magical I couldn't stop [TS]

01:06:30   it figure it out [TS]

01:06:31   know anyone who's watching this movie [TS]

01:06:32   and he's like he's not even being subtle [TS]

01:06:34   this is like you know when a [TS]

01:06:35   six-year-old is trying to tell you a [TS]

01:06:36   secret [TS]

01:06:37   why the book [TS]

01:06:39   ours will seem like minutes when yeah [TS]

01:06:43   you know but when I was 11 years old now [TS]

01:06:45   watch this movie for the first time I'm [TS]

01:06:46   totally missed that I was so engrossed [TS]

01:06:48   in other stuff i totally missed it and [TS]

01:06:50   so with that moment where Kurt flips his [TS]

01:06:52   communicator opens giant communicator [TS]

01:06:54   open later was like cool [TS]

01:06:55   oh wow right when I was 11 so it is a [TS]

01:06:58   great scene and and I think the [TS]

01:07:00   greatness of that scene is so powerful [TS]

01:07:01   that you forget how lame this was when [TS]

01:07:04   I'm watching it now and I'm seeing him [TS]

01:07:06   because you can skip same by-the-book [TS]

01:07:08   remember by the book [TS]

01:07:10   yeah but maybe he's suggesting that you [TS]

01:07:13   purchased the novelization available [TS]

01:07:16   from penguin yes by it LOL tell you the [TS]

01:07:19   date of the science team if you read [TS]

01:07:21   them as and of course you know we know [TS]

01:07:22   that regulations because sabatino's [TS]

01:07:24   every regulation of the book by heart [TS]

01:07:26   now she's broken she remembers he sees [TS]

01:07:28   so when they when they beam down into [TS]

01:07:29   the Genesis cave the the hallway that [TS]

01:07:33   leads to the genesis game i guess more [TS]

01:07:35   accurate right the the phil collins [TS]

01:07:37   memorial hallway then uh then uh you [TS]

01:07:42   know we we see that there's the betrayal [TS]

01:07:44   of Chekhov and and captain Tyrell they [TS]

01:07:47   call up con and he steals the Genesis [TS]

01:07:49   device and the trail kills himself and [TS]

01:07:52   check of yeah I don't understand why [TS]

01:07:54   does Terrell have to kill himself but [TS]

01:07:55   then the thing just jumped out of [TS]

01:07:57   Chekhov said well that's what jumps out [TS]

01:07:58   of his head it's like I'm getting the [TS]

01:07:59   hell out of here somebody's gonna blow [TS]

01:08:01   ya abandoned ship its self-presentation [TS]

01:08:05   yeah and it's one of them was a [TS]

01:08:07   disposable captain in the other one had [TS]

01:08:09   a feature credit so it was just you know [TS]

01:08:11   it goes but it kinda like that struggle [TS]

01:08:13   like you know where cons you're pushing [TS]

01:08:15   him shoot him shoot him he's like a cat [TS]

01:08:17   can't do it can't do I thought there was [TS]

01:08:19   a missing line of dialogue there that [TS]

01:08:20   they didn't put in which would have been [TS]

01:08:21   con being like point the phaser and pull [TS]

01:08:25   the trigger right and so what he does [TS]

01:08:26   what he does he turns it on himself [TS]

01:08:28   because he's got a fire the gun and he [TS]

01:08:30   doesn't want to fire it at Kirk so he he [TS]

01:08:33   fires it himself but then yeah and then [TS]

01:08:36   and then boy he did feel bad because [TS]

01:08:38   turns out if he had waited like I'm [TS]

01:08:40   another 30 seconds this thing would have [TS]

01:08:42   just fallen out of this year street was [TS]

01:08:45   just a shape also we shot the other guy [TS]

01:08:46   and that's yeah that because what David [TS]

01:08:49   did get his getting over that [TS]

01:08:50   self-defense though that's how the way i [TS]

01:08:53   figure i actually like that that's a [TS]

01:08:54   good theory i think i'm pretty proud of [TS]

01:08:56   myself for coming up with that I think [TS]

01:08:57   the thing really bailed his ear because [TS]

01:08:59   the other one got vaporized your moment [TS]

01:09:02   to get out of here ously maybe two feet [TS]

01:09:03   to his right it didn't work because he [TS]

01:09:06   still got some toast i'm gonna find [TS]

01:09:07   another year one of my one of my [TS]

01:09:09   absolute favorite lines comes up on you [TS]

01:09:11   manage to kill just about everyone else [TS]

01:09:14   con you bloodsucker you've managed to [TS]

01:09:17   kill just about everyone else but like a [TS]

01:09:19   poor marksman you keep missing the [TS]

01:09:21   target and what I really like about this [TS]

01:09:26   thing as a place up well against the [TS]

01:09:27   next scene is right he's obviously [TS]

01:09:28   trying to talk on and constant comm yeah [TS]

01:09:32   calm down I i got better I got the jet [TS]

01:09:34   is your advice you're not going to get [TS]

01:09:36   me to lose my cool i got it under [TS]

01:09:38   control it's about monday i was gonna [TS]

01:09:40   get that little areas like hey I get to [TS]

01:09:42   maroon you this time haha what and [TS]

01:09:46   walking game a couple tranquilizers [TS]

01:09:48   yes sit down yeah and it's like I will [TS]

01:09:52   go on hurting [TS]

01:09:54   yeah blouses on the other pic tomorrow [TS]

01:09:56   at a breaking story and brandy and [TS]

01:10:00   silicon is calm now he's he's he's had [TS]

01:10:03   some drinks now when the creature [TS]

01:10:05   vacates check out the year and is Kirk [TS]

01:10:09   zaps it with the phaser which setting is [TS]

01:10:11   that on the phaser i seem to recall stun [TS]

01:10:14   and kill but this appears to be bugs out [TS]

01:10:16   host marshmallow or something but [TS]

01:10:17   example rocket yeah I'm deep-fry very [TS]

01:10:21   useful in finding need to cook a hot dog [TS]

01:10:24   yeah yeah it is a pacetti lure cook a [TS]

01:10:26   hot dog that's what that's what we'll do [TS]

01:10:31   we start 45 from the camping [TS]

01:10:33   yeah and you can tell by the way he has [TS]

01:10:35   that setting because what's on his mind [TS]

01:10:36   is the next thing he says was anyone got [TS]

01:10:37   any food [TS]

01:10:38   yeah right and then the response to that [TS]

01:10:40   is there's food in the Genesis k which I [TS]

01:10:42   guarantee that's the exact same line she [TS]

01:10:44   used when they conceived David yeah [TS]

01:10:48   enough to last a lifetime and so we [TS]

01:10:56   finally get the big reveal don't duh [TS]

01:10:58   this is indeed captain kirk's a son but [TS]

01:11:01   it's in this moment of Kirk again we [TS]

01:11:03   were back to the whole I feel old stuff [TS]

01:11:07   with Captain Kirk right but he's got [TS]

01:11:09   this guy who killed him in years [TS]

01:11:10   the son hates me and I feel like an old [TS]

01:11:12   man and and she tries to cheer him up [TS]

01:11:15   she's like I got let me show you my my [TS]

01:11:17   Genesis cave which comes with its own [TS]

01:11:18   off-camera son that is inside and I [TS]

01:11:21   don't know how [TS]

01:11:23   and you wonder about Starfleet's a [TS]

01:11:27   record keeping because they look at the [TS]

01:11:30   the kickstarter video yeah and McCoys [TS]

01:11:33   like well it doesn't work and and Chris [TS]

01:11:35   like I don't know the film this year but [TS]

01:11:37   that's not how the phase two [TS]

01:11:39   let's go see because blockers donate and [TS]

01:11:43   then forget about was not in the loop [TS]

01:11:44   they were still waiting to get their [TS]

01:11:46   money archives letter because they had [TS]

01:11:47   not another planet they not the dragons [TS]

01:11:49   and they basically just wrote it off [TS]

01:11:51   that you know what's never back in [TS]

01:11:52   another capital markets project I always [TS]

01:11:54   figured that it was just cooking like [TS]

01:11:55   yeah you know this came across my desk [TS]

01:11:57   and it's Carol and I I don't wanna I [TS]

01:12:00   don't wanna know about it see I guess [TS]

01:12:01   she's doing her thing i told her i would [TS]

01:12:03   just leave her alone so let's see what [TS]

01:12:05   the other side is that she did say that [TS]

01:12:07   right it took them 10 months which is [TS]

01:12:08   almost a year to all out that cave and [TS]

01:12:11   then they built genesis in a day [TS]

01:12:13   yeah they fired off the thing and it may [TS]

01:12:15   decline in the day yeah yeah okay but [TS]

01:12:18   then we come back to the Kobayashi Maru [TS]

01:12:20   store because she's the person I was not [TS]

01:12:23   letting this guy yea he's like it's [TS]

01:12:25   bugging her that she can't she could [TS]

01:12:27   beat this and Kirk's the wall tell McCoy [TS]

01:12:30   is the one finally you know and let her [TS]

01:12:33   in on the secret [TS]

01:12:33   yeah yeah this is the legendary not only [TS]

01:12:35   does it fit with the Kirk that we've [TS]

01:12:37   known from from the original series but [TS]

01:12:39   it becomes this you know it's something [TS]

01:12:41   that really stuck with people afterward [TS]

01:12:43   which is he he cheated he changed the [TS]

01:12:45   conditions reprogram the simulator and [TS]

01:12:46   this is something so fixed and lower [TS]

01:12:49   after this movie that that in the JJ [TS]

01:12:52   Abrams Star Trek movie they actually [TS]

01:12:54   show Kirk cheating on the Kobayashi Maru [TS]

01:12:57   test and it turns out that in that movie [TS]

01:13:00   he's cheating [TS]

01:13:01   against Spock who is running tests which [TS]

01:13:05   is funny too but it's it's fun to see [TS]

01:13:07   how sabic who is a has sort of come to [TS]

01:13:10   respect kirky and she's kind of appalled [TS]

01:13:14   think you're a cheater [TS]

01:13:15   I was like you know I change the [TS]

01:13:17   conditions and and David Marcus she's a [TS]

01:13:20   shader no I totally called him on it no [TS]

01:13:24   you just and then so you get the pivot [TS]

01:13:26   right i don't believe in the no-win [TS]

01:13:27   scenario Kurtis spoke with the [TS]

01:13:29   communicator right Curtis pocket you [TS]

01:13:31   ready but yep I'm ready all right let's [TS]

01:13:33   get out and why do you feel the need to [TS]

01:13:34   keep it a secret that point by the way [TS]

01:13:36   out drama school with you all you guys [TS]

01:13:38   just don't have some coffee and [TS]

01:13:39   restaurants current finally got a drama [TS]

01:13:41   I i got the secret code spot that no one [TS]

01:13:44   else had figured out by the book by the [TS]

01:13:45   book [TS]

01:13:46   I don't like to lose but that is great i [TS]

01:13:50   don't believe in the no-win scenario and [TS]

01:13:53   that's that's the key moment of the [TS]

01:13:54   movie and really the key moment I think [TS]

01:13:56   of Star Trek period is the reason that [TS]

01:13:59   people like Star Trek is because Kirk is [TS]

01:14:02   basically infallible [TS]

01:14:04   I mean he's more or less space Ferris [TS]

01:14:06   Bueller we'll figure it out you you know [TS]

01:14:08   he's gonna he's gonna use his superior [TS]

01:14:10   intellect and he's going to win out in [TS]

01:14:11   the end and you know [TS]

01:14:14   oh yeah but his actions keep coming back [TS]

01:14:16   to haunted in other words even when he [TS]

01:14:18   has the victory over the Reliant it's [TS]

01:14:21   not a victory i get the best he's able [TS]

01:14:23   to do now is a stalemate in the past [TS]

01:14:25   they would kick reliance but now and [TS]

01:14:27   then and Kirk isn't the smartest guy [TS]

01:14:29   he's the cleverest sky right he's not [TS]

01:14:31   Spock is smarter than Kirk but he [TS]

01:14:33   doesn't have the kind of the reckless [TS]

01:14:34   abandon didn't have guile eggs anything [TS]

01:14:36   outer just has this all-consuming [TS]

01:14:38   confidence in himself [TS]

01:14:40   I will figure this out i can change the [TS]

01:14:42   rules i can get out of any situation and [TS]

01:14:44   these other people help me but it is all [TS]

01:14:46   about me and I made a note here this is [TS]

01:14:49   this is the point where he decides to [TS]

01:14:50   finally fix his lobster bib so that that [TS]

01:14:54   really I think maybe the whole purpose [TS]

01:14:55   of that is to represent his his [TS]

01:14:57   vulnerability I mean it at the point [TS]

01:14:59   that the the enterprise gets hit he [TS]

01:15:01   pulls the thing open and then once he's [TS]

01:15:03   he's got the upper hand again he closes [TS]

01:15:05   it up [TS]

01:15:06   he's no longer vulnerable it's a [TS]

01:15:08   you know what is your shields but with [TS]

01:15:10   that was a parallel to if you remember [TS]

01:15:12   in Apollo 30 when Ed Harris the very end [TS]

01:15:17   of the senior all hairy doing everything [TS]

01:15:18   like that he's wearing like a tab collar [TS]

01:15:20   shirt and the Yankee this is this is [TS]

01:15:22   going to be a disaster this guy's never [TS]

01:15:23   gonna make it and Harris goes I think [TS]

01:15:25   it's gonna be our finest hour button his [TS]

01:15:27   shirt and fixes his tie and that's what [TS]

01:15:29   it reminded me of like I'm going into [TS]

01:15:31   this final moment and i really love at [TS]

01:15:34   this point because he goes he's going on [TS]

01:15:36   the offensive con I'm my thing at you [TS]

01:15:39   and your superior intellect and he [TS]

01:15:42   finally manages to provoke kind of walk [TS]

01:15:45   inside we got Genesis that it's even [TS]

01:15:46   better we gotta run by it we got campus [TS]

01:15:49   event you'd never off the damn pilot [TS]

01:15:51   with the crazy worms can we please go [TS]

01:15:55   find something else I think cons almost [TS]

01:15:57   ready in that final taunt I laugh at [TS]

01:16:00   your superior intellect up makes fun of [TS]

01:16:02   anything you want [TS]

01:16:03   not mine so I'll say this for me is [TS]

01:16:04   consistent great don't call me honey [TS]

01:16:07   modred as because i like spring [TS]

01:16:09   scoreline it's contact marty mcfly via [TS]

01:16:12   the other lights brings forward like [TS]

01:16:14   ridiculously fast senior like haha i got [TS]

01:16:17   them he's on the line and and your [TS]

01:16:19   argument to the end is like we don't [TS]

01:16:21   need to do this but it's too bad [TS]

01:16:22   honestly though it's pure overkill [TS]

01:16:24   because really at that point when he [TS]

01:16:26   realized that he was duped by the [TS]

01:16:27   by-the-book reduction scheme that should [TS]

01:16:30   have been enough to make him realize his [TS]

01:16:32   superior intellect was entirely [TS]

01:16:33   fictional yeah right well it wasn't he [TS]

01:16:36   said that he is intelligent but not [TS]

01:16:39   experienced yes and finally like you [TS]

01:16:40   Kirk sage counts for something [TS]

01:16:42   experience counts for something that I [TS]

01:16:44   say this is a middle-aged guy I kind of [TS]

01:16:46   like you don't like that moment you know [TS]

01:16:48   what [TS]

01:16:48   just the fact that he's been around [TS]

01:16:49   Federation longer than time has counts [TS]

01:16:51   for something [TS]

01:16:52   arm and at this point the movie kind of [TS]

01:16:56   gets a little bit cheesy you know what [TS]

01:16:58   there's a convenient nebula but this one [TS]

01:17:00   is there [TS]

01:17:01   this is this is the nebula is I remember [TS]

01:17:04   when I was a kid I I friend of mine gave [TS]

01:17:08   me a star log magazine and it said it [TS]

01:17:11   said star trek tues plot involves con [TS]

01:17:13   stealing a weather machine and trapping [TS]

01:17:16   the enterprise in a cloud and it turns [TS]

01:17:19   out that's not that far off it's sort of [TS]

01:17:21   like you can see the dates [TS]

01:17:22   somebody kind of got it wrong but the [TS]

01:17:24   the I think about that every time that [TS]

01:17:26   they go into the nebula it's like oh [TS]

01:17:28   here's the space cloud I i actually [TS]

01:17:30   remember that night and me that was like [TS]

01:17:32   you know it's like an apple rumor you [TS]

01:17:34   get part of the story right but it's not [TS]

01:17:35   going exactly into nebulous don't work [TS]

01:17:37   like that there's no like snow base [TS]

01:17:38   lightning and nebulous you wouldn't have [TS]

01:17:41   liked it if the viewscreen has static on [TS]

01:17:44   it why wouldn't you like go look out a [TS]

01:17:45   window because in the long shots in the [TS]

01:17:48   nebula you can find your perfect [TS]

01:17:50   thousands of miles but but they're like [TS]

01:17:53   others TV reception is bad so it's in [TS]

01:17:57   someone fix the rabbit ears on the TV [TS]

01:17:59   set because it wouldn't because we're a [TS]

01:18:01   submarine battle moment and they want to [TS]

01:18:04   have it be that Khan and I like this [TS]

01:18:07   part of it is like conscious thinking [TS]

01:18:09   like he's in a ship on the ocean and in [TS]

01:18:11   the end that's his 20th century sent [TS]

01:18:14   thinking is one idiot is two-dimensional [TS]

01:18:16   think emotional right he thinks [TS]

01:18:18   two-dimensional a-and and this is sort [TS]

01:18:20   of where you know comes back but it's [TS]

01:18:22   like just even if they're going to the [TS]

01:18:24   nebula like he goes all they're going in [TS]

01:18:26   there and he goes you know let's try and [TS]

01:18:28   discourage them from doing that like [TS]

01:18:30   watches blow them to hang out at his [TS]

01:18:31   page on idea i don't instead and then [TS]

01:18:33   he's like Peters just trying to [TS]

01:18:35   discourage us from going into you know [TS]

01:18:38   just shoot them you want to kill her [TS]

01:18:39   the spaceship the family the people [TS]

01:18:42   you're not the warning shot goes [TS]

01:18:44   straight to the destruction shot ya know [TS]

01:18:47   that that kind of whole thing was a [TS]

01:18:48   little bit illogical to me but you're [TS]

01:18:50   right i did like this seems though in [TS]

01:18:52   there where they are looking like [TS]

01:18:54   capital ships where no ones on top and [TS]

01:18:56   the other one sort of on the bottom we [TS]

01:18:57   don't see each other it is like that [TS]

01:18:58   that submarine Jace and that's that's [TS]

01:19:01   the part that I thought was very [TS]

01:19:02   scooby-doo like it was a draw it was [TS]

01:19:04   like it all along the hallway and you [TS]

01:19:06   know that the shaggy and scooby running [TS]

01:19:08   the in the front across the two doors [TS]

01:19:10   right in the background this the snow [TS]

01:19:12   ghost friends bass going the other way [TS]

01:19:14   at the very [TS]

01:19:21   I'll it's that yeah we're going to open [TS]

01:19:24   up up a little bit of aggression here [TS]

01:19:28   yeah but that you know the point from a [TS]

01:19:30   structural standpoint is to once again [TS]

01:19:31   have it be like Kirk you know Kirk knows [TS]

01:19:33   some facts that Khan doesn't really [TS]

01:19:36   think of and that's that's what get some [TS]

01:19:38   Kirk's experience gets him the win [TS]

01:19:42   except it turns out that the that i [TS]

01:19:44   actually wrote in my notes after they [TS]

01:19:45   after they knock than the engine off the [TS]

01:19:48   Reliant i wrote game over which made me [TS]

01:19:50   laugh when Conn immediately says no Kirk [TS]

01:19:53   the game's not and at this point Khan [TS]

01:19:59   has lost it right now walking this that [TS]

01:20:01   if he ever had everybody you know right [TS]

01:20:03   the personal he's lifted up that piece [TS]

01:20:05   of styrofoam off opponents show his [TS]

01:20:07   superhuman strength steels are dead [TS]

01:20:10   yeah right it's just been a bad at a [TS]

01:20:13   more calm [TS]

01:20:15   I like that kind of visibly woozy check [TS]

01:20:17   off stumbles onto the bridge and say [TS]

01:20:20   immediately put him in charge of the [TS]

01:20:21   weapons cuts which which is a good idea [TS]

01:20:24   that they're being they're just [TS]

01:20:25   patronizing the weapons console is a [TS]

01:20:27   joystick with a button that says press [TS]

01:20:29   to fire the torpedo that's all it is [TS]

01:20:31   it's actually a lite-brite Boing go [TS]

01:20:34   everything videogame doing a great job [TS]

01:20:38   just to get a cover [TS]

01:20:42   okay okay buddy let's play space [TS]

01:20:44   invaders for the next 15 minutes you [TS]

01:20:46   know [TS]

01:20:47   will will will forgive you all the [TS]

01:20:48   deception in the worm in the ear [TS]

01:20:50   good job time really getting mascara got [TS]

01:20:53   a whole not not letting anyone know [TS]

01:20:54   about I'm push the white where your ship [TS]

01:20:56   and white button that [TS]

01:20:59   yeah you just push that one about it [TS]

01:21:01   again [TS]

01:21:02   alright champ good luck somebody check [TS]

01:21:06   out fire fire fire [TS]

01:21:08   so looking you get to press the buttons [TS]

01:21:11   president like you're on fire [TS]

01:21:14   oh do would be to say lies or two things [TS]

01:21:20   no that's the button check off so the [TS]

01:21:24   Genesis torpedo gets activated this is [TS]

01:21:26   this is constable revenge is currently [TS]

01:21:28   to have a very strange kind of detonator [TS]

01:21:30   device I don't know the [TS]

01:21:32   a lot of circles you have to push down [TS]

01:21:33   it's kind of strange it reminded me of [TS]

01:21:35   like the you know two keys to launch the [TS]

01:21:37   nuclear missiles kind of thing and it's [TS]

01:21:39   like you got only one you gotta twist of [TS]

01:21:41   thing and then the thing goes down and [TS]

01:21:43   then you twist another thing and it goes [TS]

01:21:44   down and it's like Carol how much of the [TS]

01:21:47   Kickstarter money went toward the [TS]

01:21:49   bizarre launch manage the aluminum then [TS]

01:21:52   it was that the guy that that's also not [TS]

01:21:54   from alien actually that the whole self [TS]

01:21:57   destruction alien is very similar to [TS]

01:21:58   that right and it's a it's a cool it's [TS]

01:22:02   cool moment where you know you see when [TS]

01:22:05   you watch it back you see that were we [TS]

01:22:07   need warp speed three minutes or we're [TS]

01:22:09   all dead and you see Spock and it camera [TS]

01:22:11   hold on Spock and he he thinks and you [TS]

01:22:13   know when you watch it back especially [TS]

01:22:14   it's like this is his decision it's like [TS]

01:22:16   I gotta go down there and he goes down [TS]

01:22:18   there and and sacrifices himself [TS]

01:22:20   this is obi Oshie me exactly right and [TS]

01:22:23   and and and he can't cheat but he does [TS]

01:22:26   kind of well also so they wrote they [TS]

01:22:30   they added in after leonard nimoy said i [TS]

01:22:32   wanna i want you to kill off Spock why [TS]

01:22:34   he said that I don't know [TS]

01:22:36   so uh so he was tired of it so but they [TS]

01:22:39   wrote in he was having such a good time [TS]

01:22:41   doing the movie that he started to waver [TS]

01:22:42   so they wrote in this thing where you [TS]

01:22:43   guys remember 222 dr. McCoy before he [TS]

01:22:47   goes into the chamber us and just in [TS]

01:22:49   case [TS]

01:22:50   yeah you are a little back to know might [TS]

01:22:52   might might want to do an addition on [TS]

01:22:53   the house and then you my family you [TS]

01:22:55   know [TS]

01:22:55   alright i love the moment but you want [TS]

01:22:57   more i love the moment we're up so he's [TS]

01:22:59   in there and Scotty is has gotten up and [TS]

01:23:02   even though he's not you know he's [TS]

01:23:04   collapsing all that it and you get the [TS]

01:23:06   sense that when Scott Lewis box in there [TS]

01:23:08   Scotty's like you gotta come back out [TS]

01:23:09   like he might be sickened by this but [TS]

01:23:11   it's he could still survive and then he [TS]

01:23:13   takes the like the lid off the engine [TS]

01:23:15   thing and scott is like no [TS]

01:23:18   that's the most like he's dead that's it [TS]

01:23:20   he's gone yeah it's not lookin real good [TS]

01:23:23   but you know it is what i really like [TS]

01:23:24   you put the gloves on first because we [TS]

01:23:26   want to be sanitary about this yeah a [TS]

01:23:29   clean room please [TS]

01:23:30   you know his parents always said you [TS]

01:23:32   know the little per hour before you go [TS]

01:23:34   into a warp core reactor it it's never [TS]

01:23:36   clear exactly what he does but he does [TS]

01:23:39   she keep fixing something special down [TS]

01:23:41   underneath the little lid of the thing [TS]

01:23:43   and maybe we have the gloves his hands [TS]

01:23:44   was just like burned off so he has the [TS]

01:23:46   gloves she absorbs radiation [TS]

01:23:49   speaking of gloves i meant to bring this [TS]

01:23:51   up earlier but can anyone explain y con [TS]

01:23:53   keeps one on at all times he takes one [TS]

01:23:57   off right at the very beginning right [TS]

01:23:59   and then that's it and I I yeah I kept [TS]

01:24:01   on wondering like does he have like [TS]

01:24:02   metals and really Michael Jackson [TS]

01:24:04   reference serve when he took he took one [TS]

01:24:06   glove off but then he became so obsessed [TS]

01:24:07   with Kirk that he forgot videos [TS]

01:24:09   forgotten the whole movie it's a sign of [TS]

01:24:12   his madness remember on has gone into [TS]

01:24:15   space 1996 which would have been right [TS]

01:24:17   about the time of of Michael Jackson's [TS]

01:24:19   geek of thing that's where the whole [TS]

01:24:22   club thing came from and it was a little [TS]

01:24:23   oh gosh what Michael Jackson may have [TS]

01:24:26   been a commander in the eugenics wars I [TS]

01:24:29   like at this point where where they tell [TS]

01:24:30   Sulu soon will get us out of here best [TS]

01:24:32   possible speed and Sulu proceed to make [TS]

01:24:35   the world's slowest three-point turn [TS]

01:24:37   yeah to back away from the hot you're [TS]

01:24:40   not giving any good you really have to [TS]

01:24:41   tell sue best possible oh you I was [TS]

01:24:44   going to save gas and running i was [TS]

01:24:47   going to happen pulse but I alternative [TS]

01:24:49   as possible right [TS]

01:24:51   Sulu you killed us all Sulu damn you [TS]

01:24:55   it is kind of sad that so and who are [TS]

01:24:57   basically serve the same purpose that [TS]

01:24:59   they served in the show which is [TS]

01:25:00   absolutely they in any Star Trek movies [TS]

01:25:04   to come they found plot beats for all of [TS]

01:25:07   the ensemble this movie all over it does [TS]

01:25:10   is repeat herself again and again until [TS]

01:25:13   Kirstie Alley tells her to shut up and [TS]

01:25:15   and also Lou has really are his little [TS]

01:25:18   one-liners like we're not going to make [TS]

01:25:20   it our way and that's about it [TS]

01:25:22   Sulu though in this movie he serves as a [TS]

01:25:24   surrogate for the audience in that he's [TS]

01:25:26   damn glad to be there [TS]

01:25:28   he's just going like an idiot the whole [TS]

01:25:29   time and he [TS]

01:25:30   pleased as punch to be on board the [TS]

01:25:32   enterprise for whatever reason but he's [TS]

01:25:34   got nothing to do i would give a crisp [TS]

01:25:37   andhra dollar bill two Georges decay [TS]

01:25:38   just to hear him say soft Corinthian [TS]

01:25:41   leather [TS]

01:25:42   he might he might be available check is [TS]

01:25:44   a check is kickstarter surely there's a [TS]

01:25:47   con somewhere that he's appearing every [TS]

01:25:49   hon yeah the UH so the enterprise so the [TS]

01:25:53   enterprise gets away if they get away [TS]

01:25:55   know something happens and then captain [TS]

01:25:58   everything's working Jimmy better get [TS]

01:25:59   down here and like once again Kirk [TS]

01:26:01   pulled off America a lot no consequences [TS]

01:26:04   friend everybody's fine the crew what [TS]

01:26:07   happens when you get that other world [TS]

01:26:09   there are ramifications gym you may want [TS]

01:26:11   to get down here right away i'm not [TS]

01:26:15   going to tell you what kinda empty [TS]

01:26:16   Jerrica they cut to the engineer one who [TS]

01:26:20   has a trusted loyal first officer and [TS]

01:26:22   has long friend raise your hands Jim [TS]

01:26:24   knots go past the biggest so so and then [TS]

01:26:28   comes the big good the big goodbye [TS]

01:26:30   this scene is is pretty fantastic i have [TS]

01:26:33   to say though as an on track guide that [TS]

01:26:36   the particularly the early parts of it [TS]

01:26:38   where we see Spock being weak and [TS]

01:26:40   disoriented and it's silent which is [TS]

01:26:42   just a brilliant move to have him be [TS]

01:26:45   separated by the by the thick glass or [TS]

01:26:47   whatever it is and and he's stumbling [TS]

01:26:50   about any it's it's not clear whether [TS]

01:26:52   you can see and it's it's really [TS]

01:26:55   heartbreaking [TS]

01:26:56   I mean even if somebody who's only [TS]

01:26:57   dabbled in Star Trek minorly it's it [TS]

01:27:00   brought ear he's blind and burned his [TS]

01:27:03   you-know-what call me though and i only [TS]

01:27:05   noticed it for the first time last night [TS]

01:27:07   they cut the net see spots in the corner [TS]

01:27:10   you can barely get up and gets up and [TS]

01:27:11   what does he do he fixes his goals down [TS]

01:27:13   his uniform yes yes it's touching [TS]

01:27:16   I saw the exact and it got some dignity [TS]

01:27:19   no matter what I I'm dead but my [TS]

01:27:22   captain's here i'm going to present [TS]

01:27:24   myself friday happy I'm gonna walk into [TS]

01:27:26   walls i'm gonna make sure that no [TS]

01:27:28   creases in my generation I don't walk [TS]

01:27:30   around with my shirt open half the time [TS]

01:27:32   I some people jerks and that's me just [TS]

01:27:35   showed how great my dream I was that [TS]

01:27:37   little detail i had to be a pilot but [TS]

01:27:39   that's what Spock would have done [TS]

01:27:41   yeah that's good right little moment i [TS]

01:27:44   like i like the like Scotty's he's dead [TS]

01:27:47   already [TS]

01:27:48   yeah it's like it's like no he died I [TS]

01:27:51   gotta go save him know it's too late [TS]

01:27:53   it's too late and change the rules on [TS]

01:27:56   this one [TS]

01:27:57   there's nothing left for spot but a [TS]

01:27:58   torpedo coffin that we will shoot in [TS]

01:28:02   explaining a mark 6 torpedo coffee [TS]

01:28:05   incidentally because you didn't catch [TS]

01:28:06   the gigantic leather recliner a hot and [TS]

01:28:10   it's very tasty little marks and we saw [TS]

01:28:12   the top of the spacecraft which is very [TS]

01:28:13   ponderously lowered because it turns out [TS]

01:28:17   that the Dozen taking that you don't [TS]

01:28:19   need to rush when you're shooting [TS]

01:28:20   torpedo it starts to just take your time [TS]

01:28:23   just lower it very slowly the mark the [TS]

01:28:25   mark five used to really drool their way [TS]

01:28:27   out of the the launch Bay [TS]

01:28:29   mark mark sixes are the only ones that r [TS]

01:28:32   is true for the regulations are the only [TS]

01:28:34   ones that are allowed to come to carry [TS]

01:28:36   uh [TS]

01:28:36   Vogons as a payload yeah it was it [TS]

01:28:39   wasn't until the mark 7 that they [TS]

01:28:40   realize you should probably put the [TS]

01:28:41   writing on the bottom of the coffin so [TS]

01:28:43   it's doesn't really ruin the ceremony as [TS]

01:28:46   they're watching you out of the torpedo [TS]

01:28:47   Bay yes and what exactly did they do [TS]

01:28:51   that as opposed to taking his body back [TS]

01:28:53   to his family [TS]

01:28:54   I just never quite got that I think [TS]

01:28:57   McCoy suggested with spots like I guess [TS]

01:28:59   very much space but never made sense for [TS]

01:29:01   Kirk what's popular family and because [TS]

01:29:03   he his was the most human yes you know [TS]

01:29:06   it's because McCoy said I've got some [TS]

01:29:08   strange for some strange reason I'm [TS]

01:29:10   hearings box-boy saying to fire him into [TS]

01:29:12   the newly generated plan tonight I don't [TS]

01:29:16   I remember some time but i'm not sure [TS]

01:29:18   whether it so how many I mean it's so [TS]

01:29:21   funny when you look back on this that [TS]

01:29:23   and this is skipping ahead a little bit [TS]

01:29:25   but not only do we have to remember [TS]

01:29:26   thing I and the last line is it you know [TS]

01:29:29   that there's the whole thing with the [TS]

01:29:30   all is well which is like come on is all [TS]

01:29:33   well Spock died right but but we're ok [TS]

01:29:35   we're going what really makes me that [TS]

01:29:37   should have been looking at that thing [TS]

01:29:39   we're all happy little me feel young [TS]

01:29:41   not really Chloe looks like looks at the [TS]

01:29:43   camera and says he's not really dead as [TS]

01:29:47   long as we remember him here by the book [TS]

01:29:52   he's not really dead must come back to [TS]

01:29:55   this place one day soon is and don't rip [TS]

01:30:00   your fake Vulcan ears off in a horror [TS]

01:30:02   come back for star trek 3 we promise [TS]

01:30:05   it'll it'll be good i mean there's [TS]

01:30:07   there's something that there's some nice [TS]

01:30:08   stuff here at the end but I mean that [TS]

01:30:10   that as we wind out of the conclusion [TS]

01:30:12   with Scotty gets to play the bagpipes [TS]

01:30:14   isn't that nice glad he brings uh we [TS]

01:30:17   have a nice shot of the New Genesis [TS]

01:30:20   planet which has a son that its orbiting [TS]

01:30:21   and again I don't know where the Sun [TS]

01:30:23   came from Commodore before we get down [TS]

01:30:26   to this point i wanted to point out one [TS]

01:30:28   more thing we are going from the death [TS]

01:30:29   seemed to yeah there's there's the bit [TS]

01:30:32   where he's saying his final goodbyes to [TS]

01:30:35   Kirk through the through the universe [TS]

01:30:36   the glass here and he's wearing the big [TS]

01:30:40   gloves [TS]

01:30:40   transparent aluminum yeah take them off [TS]

01:30:42   right but it's so fast he whips that [TS]

01:30:46   glove off so fast so we can pull his [TS]

01:30:48   live long and prosper up against the [TS]

01:30:50   glass watch the scene again you'll see [TS]

01:30:52   in water [TS]

01:30:53   one moment he's got the glove on and it [TS]

01:30:56   drops below frame and within [TS]

01:30:58   microseconds it's often that hand is on [TS]

01:31:01   the glass [TS]

01:31:02   it's amazing he news with Spock knew he [TS]

01:31:06   was going to die very soon so we need to [TS]

01:31:07   get his hand up fast [TS]

01:31:09   I think there's a little a whole subtext [TS]

01:31:11   here about gloves though in this film [TS]

01:31:13   not sure what it is you know but I did [TS]

01:31:15   like the line where he said that I never [TS]

01:31:16   took the Kobayashi Maru out what do you [TS]

01:31:18   think of my solution [TS]

01:31:20   you know I had it so I took some [TS]

01:31:22   consequences for my actions but yeah [TS]

01:31:23   unlike you who frankly was because of [TS]

01:31:26   this whole mess and my death I might add [TS]

01:31:29   thank you very much oh and live longer [TS]

01:31:31   process and drop car off at Starbase [TS]

01:31:34   five we could have done that but [TS]

01:31:36   no no no no green program the parameters [TS]

01:31:39   of the seeds for a future culture that [TS]

01:31:42   will spring and the worship me as a god [TS]

01:31:44   probably is the great Kirk who delivered [TS]

01:31:46   of their whatever let's just leave it [TS]

01:31:48   messy was you had to teach him a lesson [TS]

01:31:50   because of your superior intellect you [TS]

01:31:52   were kind of annoyed that he tried to [TS]

01:31:54   kill you so you moved into my planet [TS]

01:31:55   know perfectly within the prime [TS]

01:31:57   directive what thanks to spot get [TS]

01:31:59   torpedo coffin [TS]

01:32:01   yeah and you know they didn't check for [TS]

01:32:03   existing biomatter before they dumped a [TS]

01:32:05   con on that planet [TS]

01:32:07   yeah they just dumped him yeah exactly [TS]

01:32:09   didn't try to transplant anything [TS]

01:32:11   Kurt there was also no sign of a planet [TS]

01:32:14   there at all doing were there any I [TS]

01:32:15   proto matter particles like was going to [TS]

01:32:17   be a problem for Lucius the nebula I [TS]

01:32:19   think they use the yeah it's really fun [TS]

01:32:22   and it sucked in the nebula and created [TS]

01:32:25   the planet is brains yeah and then why [TS]

01:32:28   didn't they just do that instead of [TS]

01:32:29   looking for a life was planet with no my [TS]

01:32:31   crew because nebula weather systems are [TS]

01:32:34   unpredictable so you from home what's [TS]

01:32:36   gonna happen yeah this is what happens [TS]

01:32:38   when you back the kickstarter project [TS]

01:32:39   from someone with no track records and I [TS]

01:32:41   don't work someone you can put together [TS]

01:32:43   you know what they can do a photoshop [TS]

01:32:45   render and people are throwing money [TS]

01:32:46   Adam I oh and I should mention that that [TS]

01:32:48   that Captain Kirk gets a hug gets to hug [TS]

01:32:51   his son at the end you get the world's [TS]

01:32:52   most awkward hug too [TS]

01:32:54   it doesn't i like that it was very [TS]

01:32:56   awkward hug the little pat i think Kirk [TS]

01:33:01   just noticed the perm at that moment in [TS]

01:33:02   time and he think he's thinking to [TS]

01:33:03   himself is this really my style [TS]

01:33:05   he's tall and blonde he also probably [TS]

01:33:08   sees the the cardigan he's got tied [TS]

01:33:10   around his neck and he's trying to [TS]

01:33:11   figure out whether we should hug mercy [TS]

01:33:13   for slapping silly fight for his party [TS]

01:33:15   was on his way to play tennis before [TS]

01:33:17   it's right up there are even in the 23rd [TS]

01:33:19   century you don't like red [TS]

01:33:21   yeah at Genesis tennis and I was ya [TS]

01:33:24   genesis genesis genesis genesis its [TS]

01:33:27   trail assistance but I did like the one [TS]

01:33:29   seen even though it was a cameras over [TS]

01:33:30   the head to go see you never faced [TS]

01:33:32   before [TS]

01:33:34   no one's ever accused kill people I'm [TS]

01:33:35   you maroon them on planets but you've [TS]

01:33:38   never had anyone die around you have you [TS]

01:33:40   anyone who matters and this is sort of [TS]

01:33:42   like a little bit human and also that [TS]

01:33:44   idea was of course I know I'm adopted [TS]

01:33:46   you idiots [TS]

01:33:47   but yeah here's a here's your message i [TS]

01:33:50   haven't faced death there you go haha [TS]

01:33:52   theme that's the theme of this movie [TS]

01:33:56   yeah but he doesn't he's pretty happy at [TS]

01:33:58   the end though yeah all is well now it's [TS]

01:34:00   more of the midlife crisis stuff ma'am [TS]

01:34:02   he's faced death and now he feels you're [TS]

01:34:04   like wow this is this crisis is over I [TS]

01:34:06   feel great Spock's dead i feel young [TS]

01:34:08   let's go is awesome it was that it was [TS]

01:34:12   that Vulcan that was dragging me down [TS]

01:34:13   making me feel so freaking old I'm glad [TS]

01:34:15   he's God find me books what prozac was a [TS]

01:34:19   waste of money i don't need these [TS]

01:34:21   glasses anymore on that logic crap all [TS]

01:34:24   the time [TS]

01:34:25   screw logic let's go find some triple [TS]

01:34:26   breast green chicks let's go [TS]

01:34:29   I should have shot spotter planet ages [TS]

01:34:32   ago [TS]

01:34:32   you know what I'm gonna come back here [TS]

01:34:35   one day but right now we find a bar girl [TS]

01:34:39   needs some Romulan ale i gotta-i gotta [TS]

01:34:41   feed my job this will pick up Spock's [TS]

01:34:44   body later right now [TS]

01:34:47   Starbase eight let's get this brace for [TS]

01:34:50   everyone on base eight the bart sorbet [TS]

01:34:52   say let's swing by Babylon 5 and pick up [TS]

01:34:54   some cock Marat sure because that whole [TS]

01:35:00   would feel young feel you what young and [TS]

01:35:04   something Spock was trying to tell me on [TS]

01:35:06   my birthday [TS]

01:35:07   now you got the message ya see it was [TS]

01:35:09   the worst of times when Spock died that [TS]

01:35:11   it was the best of times when he [TS]

01:35:12   realized that he felt young sure the [TS]

01:35:15   best of times like stock is no longer [TS]

01:35:17   painted my uh oh say Kurt is a very [TS]

01:35:20   selfish is like Spock is dead but I feel [TS]

01:35:22   great [TS]

01:35:23   that's right everybody is great you [TS]

01:35:25   don't want you know what right people [TS]

01:35:27   have died the ship is wracked with I'm I [TS]

01:35:30   snapped out of that midlife crisis here [TS]

01:35:33   we go by mwr some I don't mind the [TS]

01:35:35   glasses so much now that that dude is [TS]

01:35:36   dead [TS]

01:35:37   yeah but he cracked his classes oh [TS]

01:35:40   that's right yeah I know I know but [TS]

01:35:41   he'll have to sell them instructor for [TS]

01:35:43   so so uh before we go I want it I wanted [TS]

01:35:46   to talk about p.m. some of the [TS]

01:35:48   ramifications of of a later movies [TS]

01:35:52   especially of surgery 32 this because i [TS]

01:35:54   feel like in some ways star trek 3 kind [TS]

01:35:56   of ruins the same movie [TS]

01:35:57   hey ya know each other's let's fire is [TS]

01:36:00   over [TS]

01:36:01   four star trek through the search for [TS]

01:36:02   spock fired fired off for me because I [TS]

01:36:04   haven't seen it [TS]

01:36:05   spoiler alert they find Spock they find [TS]

01:36:09   their there there's one scene in that [TS]

01:36:12   that absolutely kills me when they're on [TS]

01:36:14   the Genesis planet and the Klingons are [TS]

01:36:15   behind them and again another in depth [TS]

01:36:17   captain and you're just going oh [TS]

01:36:19   Klingon battlecruiser d close behind you [TS]

01:36:21   want to throw up the shields [TS]

01:36:23   nope no you learn nothing would do it so [TS]

01:36:25   starkly here's the things that ruin I I [TS]

01:36:27   don't want to get into starts at three [TS]

01:36:28   but but like my criticism actually alien [TS]

01:36:31   3 where the first scene of alien 3 they [TS]

01:36:35   wake up Ripley and they say oh yeah that [TS]

01:36:36   girl that you saved in the first in the [TS]

01:36:38   last movie she's dead [TS]

01:36:40   everyone's dead so it sorry it was [TS]

01:36:42   totally invalidates everything that [TS]

01:36:43   happened in your previous movie let's [TS]

01:36:44   start our new movie which is a big help [TS]

01:36:47   to have any attachment to those guys [TS]

01:36:48   yeah the middle finger to the audience [TS]

01:36:50   so in star trek 3 what let's see what [TS]

01:36:52   happens [TS]

01:36:53   they bring back Spock so the sacrifice [TS]

01:36:55   here I mean it's nice to have spot back [TS]

01:36:57   he was in a bunch of other movies he was [TS]

01:36:58   even in the new star trek movie but he's [TS]

01:37:01   brought back which lessens his sacrifice [TS]

01:37:03   a little bit the Genesis device turns [TS]

01:37:05   out to be kind of a a scientific fraud [TS]

01:37:07   where they used like unstable proto [TS]

01:37:10   matter instead of so supersoft on your [TS]

01:37:12   own matric Carol mark oue the new Star [TS]

01:37:15   illegal rodeo matter [TS]

01:37:17   well we could we wanted to get funds and [TS]

01:37:19   Carol and her team are turning out to be [TS]

01:37:21   kind of frauds David gets like stabbed [TS]

01:37:25   in the back by a Klingon so Kirk son [TS]

01:37:27   that he's met and had a understanding [TS]

01:37:30   with now is is just dead and worst of [TS]

01:37:32   all is that a sonic becomes a really [TS]

01:37:36   awful actress it's true it's very [TS]

01:37:38   strange but I think David getting killed [TS]

01:37:40   is important because it sets of Star [TS]

01:37:42   Trek 6i guess it from wearing future [TS]

01:37:45   cardigans [TS]

01:37:45   yeah true I i think it's unfortunate [TS]

01:37:48   that they kill them off before they can [TS]

01:37:49   really be more kind of like a [TS]

01:37:52   interaction with with Kirk it does make [TS]

01:37:55   you wonder what the point of that whole [TS]

01:37:56   David thing was it's used later just [TS]

01:37:59   like spot comes back might my wife was [TS]

01:38:01   saying today that she prefers to think [TS]

01:38:03   that that a spot died and then he came [TS]

01:38:07   back and save the whales and what [TS]

01:38:09   happened between men [TS]

01:38:11   I don't know he's back [TS]

01:38:14   yeah there we go back there was a lot of [TS]

01:38:16   star trek 3 where I felt the unraveled [TS]

01:38:18   everything that they built up in the [TS]

01:38:20   second movie yeah and although i don't [TS]

01:38:22   hate star trek 3 is a movie I I feel [TS]

01:38:24   like it backtracked on many of the [TS]

01:38:26   important things in star trek to and I [TS]

01:38:28   would rather you know sort of think of [TS]

01:38:30   star trek to as as the as it is and not [TS]

01:38:35   about like all the things that they kind [TS]

01:38:37   of backup because I don't want to think [TS]

01:38:37   looking at the science team and the [TS]

01:38:39   Genesis device that well it turns out it [TS]

01:38:41   was all scientific fraud this whole [TS]

01:38:43   thing was for nothing and now it's just [TS]

01:38:44   a weapon and you know it was all just [TS]

01:38:47   like really irresponsible and bad things [TS]

01:38:50   and you know what was a weapon and by [TS]

01:38:52   the way you know David Marcus was [TS]

01:38:55   irresponsible on its worst part is going [TS]

01:38:57   to have to use midi-chlorians in the [TS]

01:38:58   yeah in the rocket mix mix in the [TS]

01:39:01   medical reasons and so the other thing i [TS]

01:39:03   want to mention before we go is the [TS]

01:39:04   impact on future star trek's I feel like [TS]

01:39:06   structure to is a little bit like [TS]

01:39:07   Goldfinger was with James Bond movies [TS]

01:39:11   which is it was so successful in so many [TS]

01:39:13   ways that everything it almost every [TS]

01:39:15   further movie in the series sort of [TS]

01:39:17   tries to be this one like Goldfinger if [TS]

01:39:20   you lie i've seen all the bond movies [TS]

01:39:22   and it you know the first to bond movies [TS]

01:39:23   are not at all really like gold finger [TS]

01:39:25   and then Goldfinger's its broader and [TS]

01:39:27   it's got a really wacky villain and you [TS]

01:39:29   know and and and yeah and gadgets cars [TS]

01:39:33   you have three further bond movie is [TS]

01:39:34   sort of like trying to be Goldfinger to [TS]

01:39:36   the template and star trek to you know [TS]

01:39:38   not every star trek movie but many Star [TS]

01:39:41   Trek movies to come our template today [TS]

01:39:44   on star trek to including the JJ premise [TS]

01:39:47   movie which you know has its not Stu and [TS]

01:39:49   I I feel like it's interesting that this [TS]

01:39:51   is the movie that became definitive and [TS]

01:39:55   every you know every star trek movie [TS]

01:39:57   afterward owes a huge amount to what was [TS]

01:40:00   defined in this movie which is funny [TS]

01:40:02   because it's not the first movie the [TS]

01:40:04   first movie they just kind of like [TS]

01:40:05   Michael said at the beginning just look [TS]

01:40:06   back you know whatever but uh but this [TS]

01:40:09   one keeps coming black like Star Trek [TS]

01:40:11   six is almost like a replay of star trek [TS]

01:40:14   to and a couple of this next-generation [TS]

01:40:17   movies feel very much like Star Trek to [TS]

01:40:19   and the JJ Abrams feels a lot like Star [TS]

01:40:21   Trek to so I feel like you know and [TS]

01:40:23   that's not a bad thing [TS]

01:40:24   I think it's just interesting that this [TS]

01:40:26   just like with Goldfinger it's almost [TS]

01:40:27   like ah that let's do that again that [TS]

01:40:30   was good that worked [TS]

01:40:31   this is where we rebooted the franchise [TS]

01:40:33   and this is where we started making [TS]

01:40:34   money and we're just going to keep [TS]

01:40:36   trying to make that movie over and over [TS]

01:40:37   again it is it there was also a curse of [TS]

01:40:40   the even-numbered movies being much [TS]

01:40:41   better than the odd-numbered movies like [TS]

01:40:43   13 and five as opposed to 24 yes [TS]

01:40:47   oh yeah this is also the moment of like [TS]

01:40:49   oh this is how you do a movie about TV [TS]

01:40:52   characters like I got it [TS]

01:40:54   we figured after that because if the [TS]

01:40:56   successful star trek movies focus on the [TS]

01:40:59   relationships between the the characters [TS]

01:41:01   right so that's why the I think got this [TS]

01:41:04   for instructor they figured that out the [TS]

01:41:07   star trek it was kind of very clinical [TS]

01:41:09   and coal right and there's a weird [TS]

01:41:11   satellite thing yeah like who spoke has [TS]

01:41:14   lost his emotions all chick and nobody [TS]

01:41:17   knows what's going on with the weird [TS]

01:41:19   balch eight eight hours long [TS]

01:41:21   oh one other thing i have on my little [TS]

01:41:23   list is is and it's funny because you [TS]

01:41:25   mentioned the bulb the bulb lady [TS]

01:41:28   i Leah from Star Trek the motion picture [TS]

01:41:29   i wanted to mention again kirstie alley [TS]

01:41:32   as slovak because I think this is [TS]

01:41:34   probably the most effective new [TS]

01:41:36   character introduced to the ensemble at [TS]

01:41:38   any point in the original Star Trek I [TS]

01:41:41   think I think it's a great character and [TS]

01:41:44   I think that Kirstie Alley's performance [TS]

01:41:45   is good and it's kind of a shame that I [TS]

01:41:48   mean I joked about it they replace her [TS]

01:41:50   with Robin Curtis I guess she didn't [TS]

01:41:52   wanted to come back there was a salary [TS]

01:41:54   dispute or something and Robin Curtis [TS]

01:41:56   instructor is terrible and then we never [TS]

01:41:58   see sonic again because it was a huge [TS]

01:41:59   mistake and and it's kind of too bad in [TS]

01:42:02   the sense that that that that character [TS]

01:42:04   works really well and she feels like [TS]

01:42:06   she's kind of part of the ensemble in a [TS]

01:42:08   way that I don't think other characters [TS]

01:42:10   did and I think they tried to bring her [TS]

01:42:12   back in Star Trek 6 i'm assuming that [TS]

01:42:15   the character that ends up game played [TS]

01:42:16   by Kim control capture it's the same [TS]

01:42:19   caster this road here they couldn't hold [TS]

01:42:21   the pickle to Darren trick ya anymore [TS]

01:42:23   they don't have anything sound nice avex [TS]

01:42:25   we have so that's really smart [TS]

01:42:27   it's smart that far into the star trek [TS]

01:42:29   mythos to bring on a character who [TS]

01:42:31   doesn't really know the ropes so that as [TS]

01:42:34   you bring new people on particularly [TS]

01:42:36   with with the [TS]

01:42:37   movie bringing new people into the [TS]

01:42:38   franchise to have somebody that can ask [TS]

01:42:41   silly questions and bring up regulations [TS]

01:42:43   that the track he's already knew by [TS]

01:42:44   heart right was was pretty general order [TS]

01:42:46   a team of course and it's one also to [TS]

01:42:48   act as a foil for people who didn't grow [TS]

01:42:51   up with the series to you know service [TS]

01:42:52   the ass position exactly but i also like [TS]

01:42:54   to see there is one scene in there which [TS]

01:42:56   he quotes the General Order and it's not [TS]

01:42:57   correct that tells you to shop it's [TS]

01:42:59   pakka [TS]

01:43:00   it's like he knows he knows that he [TS]

01:43:01   knows nao and the Admirals familiar with [TS]

01:43:04   the orders why you insolent little bit [TS]

01:43:06   you don't have parents familiar with [TS]

01:43:08   them enough to know that order 15 does [TS]

01:43:10   not exist yeah exactly right that you [TS]

01:43:14   just quoting orders and locking that bar [TS]

01:43:16   right after the horse leaves but she's [TS]

01:43:18   great she's great in this and it's just [TS]

01:43:20   kind of a shame that this is this is [TS]

01:43:22   that was her first role introducing [TS]

01:43:24   Christian you and she did a good job [TS]

01:43:26   it's sort of sad that but it's it's it's [TS]

01:43:28   great in this movie so it's also a [TS]

01:43:30   little creepy sex in the city and you [TS]

01:43:32   see you know it's in Belarus yes can [TS]

01:43:35   control yeah yeah that's true only [TS]

01:43:36   reading wikipedia tells me that that [TS]

01:43:39   character was supposed to be 7i think [TS]

01:43:41   you run Barry objected to it because I [TS]

01:43:43   don't want to spoil star trek 64 you [TS]

01:43:45   know [TS]

01:43:48   no you ruined starter x64 me but the [TS]

01:43:51   character ends up being a trainer so [TS]

01:43:53   gene roddenberry's like no uh-huh [TS]

01:43:56   we can't have a beloved character be a [TS]

01:43:58   trader the traitor and also apparently [TS]

01:44:00   kim cattrall didn't want to be the third [TS]

01:44:01   actress playing the second time I don't [TS]

01:44:03   blame her i don't blame looks like being [TS]

01:44:05   the fourth guarantee which assistance [TS]

01:44:07   yeah that's right i have just one thing [TS]

01:44:09   to say Jason yes it is very cold in [TS]

01:44:13   Spain this is Ceti alpha five that's my [TS]

01:44:17   problem [TS]

01:44:17   how does he know an old Klingon proverb [TS]

01:44:21   and is that he was really has been [TS]

01:44:23   reading at the library on the enterprise [TS]

01:44:25   before he got kicked that's right i was [TS]

01:44:28   that not a thing though revenge's is [TS]

01:44:29   best served cold until it was introduced [TS]

01:44:31   by start record does that come from [TS]

01:44:33   something else original it comes it [TS]

01:44:35   comes from something else but that's [TS]

01:44:36   sort of like you know you haven't heard [TS]

01:44:38   Shakespearean so you've heard it done in [TS]

01:44:39   the original try knocking on you it's [TS]

01:44:42   all kind of display systems are the old [TS]

01:44:44   the old Vulcan problem only Nixon could [TS]

01:44:46   go [TS]

01:44:47   it's a star trek exactly that's a Vulcan [TS]

01:44:49   all ok you know it's the old i think jay [TS]

01:44:51   leno right back when he was actually [TS]

01:44:53   funny did this joke which was that the [TS]

01:44:55   star trek you always have to have the [TS]

01:44:56   ridiculous premise sold by the the [TS]

01:44:58   legitimate premises so it's I'm sure [TS]

01:45:00   you're all familiar with the works of [TS]

01:45:02   Plato Socrates and creaminess of Rydell [TS]

01:45:05   seven crap that's a little like that [TS]

01:45:08   Star Trek logic that's just you got [TS]

01:45:11   ahold of course the three are synonymous [TS]

01:45:12   right it's Christmas [TS]

01:46:21   superior to start with yes we have been [TS]

01:46:24   heavily settled that route with that [TS]

01:46:25   scientific every night I think [TS]

01:46:27   motion carried yes [TS]
