The Incomparable

107: A Little Obsessed With Kirk

  [Music] [TS]

the Intolerable podcast number 107 [TS]

  September Atlanta [TS]

  [Music] [TS]

welcome back to being comfortable [TS]

podcast I'm your host Jason Snell and [TS]

tonight we are going to be discussing [TS]

one of my favorite movies of all time [TS]

it's true it is a fine film from 1982 [TS]

directed by Nicholas Meyer UMaine mostly [TS]

know it for the the title the title [TS]

character a fellow named god never was [TS]

your head shaking and rages you always [TS]

you made out of that because it almost [TS]

needs my fists were shaking [TS]

who yes I think I've i think i've blown [TS]

out my microphone while shouting and [TS]

your voice should be echoing in space [TS]

right a dead moon it's it's very exactly [TS]

con-con it started to the wrath of khan [TS]

and joining me tonight to talk about [TS]

this most excellent of Star Trek movies [TS]

here on we are recording this on Khan [TS]

  Wednesday everybody's favorite chain [TS]

  restaurant [TS]

Star Trek theme chain restaurant it's [TS]

always wednesday con Wednesday are my [TS]

fellow Star Trek fan Scott McNulty hi [TS]

  Scott [TS]

hello jason i have been and always will [TS]

be recording indeed also joining me is [TS]

the great Steve let's hi Steve [TS]

Oh was were you expecting the great [TS]

Steve laughs I'm sorry better get off so [TS]

we can write star trek in Babylon 5 or [TS]

not in the same university i'm really [TS]

looking forward to discussing star trek [TS]

  that like the excellent [TS]

this is from the Babylon 5 extended [TS]

start exactly right exactly right where [TS]

it's from and joining me as somebody [TS]

I've been talking to about this podcast [TS]

since we before we started and he has [TS]

not been on it until tonight he is a [TS]

sci-fi fan extraordinaire and immobile [TS]

  analyst extraordinaire to he's a he's a [TS]

lovely fellow and we're glad to finally [TS]

have money and comfortable it's Michael [TS]

Gartenberg hi your task me Jason let's [TS]

ask me you task to task me and i shall [TS]

happen is going to chase you around the [TS]

  flames of perdition [TS]

yes and then some nebulae that was not [TS]

  in mobile [TS]

dick which apparently they knew about in [TS]

1996 this is not a subtle there's a lot [TS]

of depth and yeah they're actually [TS]

they're there is some subtlety in it but [TS]

there is also some not subtlety in it so [TS]

I let's get started in the great [TS]

tradition of incomparable movie episodes [TS]

i was going to die i suppose first even [TS]

though John Syracuse's and here i should [TS]

ask if anybody has any opening remarks [TS]

but otherwise I thought we would just [TS]

sort of walk through the movie [TS]

chronologically and and see where that [TS]

takes us because you know that that [TS]

seems to be the most effective way to [TS]

approach these movies and I have to say [TS]

I I like John circular saw a lot but i [TS]

am very glad he's not on this podcast [TS]

yeah i love this movie [TS]

I'm i continued not think this movie was [TS]

not invited yes I I should probably [TS]

point out that i am not here to bash [TS]

this film I am NOT as you know a a up [TS]

big-time star trek favorite you got a [TS]

star trek good i I'm not filled with [TS]

nostalgia for the TV show but and in [TS]

fact i just saw this film for the first [TS]

time last week are you seriously and i [TS]

watched it for a second time this week I [TS]

but I'm not here to bash a classic film [TS]

watch it like 90 more times and you'll [TS]

  catch up with me [TS]

ya know I was I was I was not expecting [TS]

much from this movie because the the [TS]

star trek first-generation series always [TS]

struck me as if fun but largely goofy [TS]

and and then I watched this film and it [TS]

turns out that it is fun but largely [TS]

goofy sea and in the first time I was [TS]

picking at it a bit but then I the [TS]

second time i watched I just SAT back in [TS]

Washington I have to admit once I did [TS]

that I really enjoyed the movie a couple [TS]

of years how I cannot believe that we [TS]

found the only person in the world who [TS]

had it before last we cannot see mr. two [TS]

buddies yes well now having said that I [TS]

i'm not sure i would place it even in [TS]

the same quadrant as any of the Star [TS]

Wars films from the original mm and and [TS]

I know I knew you and you end and Scott [TS]

have both said that you prefer this to [TS]

empire is heavily yes indeed india also [TS]

i come to this podcast in the hope that [TS]

I may cultivate and understand [TS]

ending of why don't some love well for [TS]

one there were no he walks in it and I [TS]

just felt I know I must be missing [TS]

something because Jason I know to be a [TS]

man of some refinement given his [TS]

appreciation of a real genius not see [TS]

  there you go [TS]

but it is interesting because this film [TS]

came two years after Empire and I think [TS]

there was a lot of influences way Empire [TS]

was made in the way they made this film [TS]

as opposed to star trek one which if you [TS]

watch this film they just simply pretend [TS]

  they don't exist [TS]

yeah yeah when when we were talking last [TS]

week I think and wisely so we think you [TS]

said well if we got at least mention the [TS]

original Star Trek before we talk about [TS]

star trek to because it was you know [TS]

kind of ponderous and Estelle's yeah it [TS]

was not really a very good movie it's [TS]

like they try to do everything in that [TS]

movie and so they did nothing and it was [TS]

like the worst day off of the film ever [TS]

they got to the end of that movie after [TS]

sitting for three hours like what I [TS]

still remember the ad campaign from that [TS]

film which was plainly leaving the [TS]

theater and and dumping their thoughts [TS]

on camera and nobody could really think [TS]

of what to say that in fact i just i [TS]

still remember the young kid at the very [TS]

end he just stares out into space and [TS]

doesn't say anything for about three [TS]

seconds and then the only thing you can [TS]

  say is fun [TS]

yeah any quite know what to do with the [TS]

franchise the franchise had been gone I [TS]

mean don't have never done this before [TS]

right I went off the air all of a sudden [TS]

Star Wars is this popular thing and [TS]

Roddenberry convinces this video let's [TS]

do star trek again but now i can do with [TS]

a big-budget special effects and you can [TS]

see the influence of the first film of [TS]

star wars star wars had a light speed [TS]

jump and stow Star Trek's only had to a [TS]

work jump but we're going to ours a [TS]

color as opposed to the black-and-white [TS]

wanted they traveled by rainbow [TS]

yeah the absolutely it was it was [TS]

totally there and you know 45 minutes of [TS]

dots of the enterprise which think it [TS]

was good because they reuse those shots [TS]

like you know when the next five films [TS]

they're building up the librarian stock [TS]

  photography yeah [TS]

we got that's what it was but the thing [TS]

is everything is so totally different in [TS]

this film like this is the film that [TS]

really should have started the franchise [TS]

alright because it's got the characters [TS]

right it's got character interaction and [TS]

the characters were always the strength [TS]

of the original series anyway and so to [TS]

make it about the sort of special [TS]

effects and and and have this kind of [TS]

really long ponderous preachy kind of [TS]

plot as opposed to in this where it's [TS]

there's action and then there are some [TS]

really nice character interactions and [TS]

  there's a you know there's a theme and [TS]

  there's a message but it's not it's not [TS]

preachy and you know you're right it is [TS]

this is the movie that was the movie [TS]

that they should have made but they they [TS]

didn't they took this kind of leftover [TS]

TV episode and blew it up and yeah not [TS]

so good but they create pretended that [TS]

the first one didn't exist then you go [TS]

right into the fact that uniforms are [TS]

different the ship is different i think [TS]

this is like only don't think it's the [TS]

same is kirk is an admiral and isn't it [TS]

basically the same opening I mean I seem [TS]

to recall i remember the first well but [TS]

i remember that the they were they were [TS]

wandering up to the newly go up to the [TS]

new ship and both of them and a lot of [TS]

the stuff that it thats instructor to is [TS]

is effect scenes from from Star Trek one [TS]

so that part is the same but again they [TS]

  do it [TS]

this is jumping a slightly ahead but [TS]

they do it in like 30 seconds in this [TS]

movie and then start to recommend motion [TS]

pictures like 10 minutes but one thing [TS]

but they were not planning to be on the [TS]

enterprise in that first film where they [TS]

have I thought they were retired in that [TS]

film as well and then ended up just by [TS]

virtue of something yes yes curtain both [TS]

movies does take over for the actual [TS]

captain right and then while the first [TS]

in the first movie they were sort of [TS]

less subtle about that Curtis takes over [TS]

and with that that will be open with [TS]

like 20 minutes of Klingons being [TS]

destroyed that's true that's true [TS]

where's this movie begins with the the [TS]

were thrown into the 23rd century and we [TS]

don't know what we're looking at it [TS]

looks like it's the bridge of the [TS]

enterprise going into the neutral zone [TS]

accept that some of our familiar friends [TS]

are there but there's this girl with [TS]

pointy ears who's who's in the captain's [TS]

chair and and she manages to get the [TS]

ship blown up girls equipment drivers no [TS]

  survivors were all [TS]

here in that music and then you see [TS]

Spock whore you see McCoy and soon [TS]

actually wrote this down last night and [TS]

then all of a sudden she turns rally the [TS]

hell is sitting in that chair was some [TS]

mystery is going on here [TS]

corona I with you and so this is the [TS]

first time I've watched this movie with [TS]

a critical eye because usually i'm just [TS]

basking in the glory that is star trek [TS]

to date so I do you think about it too [TS]

much but as I'm watching it so I know [TS]

obviously what the first scene is right [TS]

it's kasia peru we find out that you [TS]

know it's there in a simulator and it's [TS]

a no-win situation it sets up one of [TS]

these great pieces of lower in the star [TS]

trek universe right and we find out [TS]

there's a payoff later on with the the [TS]

whole Kobayashi Maru thing but as I'm [TS]

watching it so it's a training exercise [TS]

and I think why do they have these [TS]

experience to office alright playing [TS]

along in this training exercise it makes [TS]

no sense wouldn't it all be cadets yes [TS]

well I guess presumably they're there [TS]

because you think that they're going to [TS]

give you some guidance right and then [TS]

they're killed off in Reverse to whom [TS]

McCoy spot they're all going and my [TS]

question is who's wired the bridge [TS]

yeah yeah there's a lot of pyrotechnics [TS]

involved and and has no one yet put [TS]

seatbelts on the enterprise they're the [TS]

only ones with enough experience to [TS]

reasonably throw themselves across the [TS]

bridge in a convincing and Kirk seems [TS]

quite upset about the fact that they he [TS]

says they destroyed the bridge and and [TS]

you with it like you know how dare you [TS]

know you broke my ship will who wired [TS]

this thing to explode when fake playing [TS]

  with fire fake torpedoes [TS]

well if you remember in the first one [TS]

they had seatbelt like the armrest sort [TS]

of collapsed in their mysterious figure [TS]

that was kind of stupid mistake and it [TS]

is just roll of quarters roll across the [TS]

floor that will shake the ship so any [TS]

questions so the star trek to ever there [TS]

was a rumor before it came out that spot [TS]

was going to get killed so they put the [TS]

scene in and killed Spock immediately in [TS]

the first thing I uh okay he's not [TS]

really its just faked out [TS]

yeah he'll be fine but it but you know [TS]

the first time you see you don't know [TS]

that it's a simulation we don't know [TS]

what's going on any open the door and [TS]

you see kind of Kirk in that shadow that [TS]

  sell variants [TS]

now we're now we're going to get some [TS]

explanations to what's going on in his [TS]

parallel universe but first you think [TS]

it's God but then you think what does [TS]

God need with this time for a hairpiece [TS]

I Captain Kirk at the beginning aids [TS]

it's really funny in the beginning of [TS]

  the movie he's he's kind of a a a jerk [TS]

right he's like he does no sense of [TS]

humor he he really kind of gives it to [TS]

sonic when he comes in and says you know [TS]

you you screwed this up and and McCoys [TS]

making jokes and and he's not listening [TS]

and he and he has a conversation with [TS]

Spock that is not he accepts this case [TS]

it's implied but it's never said [TS]

outright this is like 50th birthday and [TS]

he's feeling very old and washed up in [TS]

his little Admirals Admirals job and and [TS]

bone the same so you get the book from [TS]

Spock and bones brings him [TS]

antique glasses and booze in Romulan now [TS]

but I thought that was great the scene [TS]

with him and McCoy and those glasses [TS]

it's me that's one of the best scenes in [TS]

the film because this is about age this [TS]

is about like these people that have [TS]

grown old together and everyone else is [TS]

kind of accepted their place in life [TS]

except for Kirk and he's trying to deal [TS]

with it you know got moping around the [TS]

galaxies is that game for the young and [TS]

I'm not doing that anymore [TS]

and of course like that's not you are [TS]

really the whole theme of this film is [TS]

our journey through Kirk's midlife [TS]

  crisis [TS]

oh yeah absolutely that's what this is [TS]

in fact the final line of the film is I [TS]

  feel young [TS]

what part what part of this with me was [TS]

the young Kirk remember this is the guy [TS]

who is the youngest Starfleet captain [TS]

history who brought the enterprise back [TS]

in a five-year mission without killing [TS]

most of his crew he was a hero and now [TS]

he's like this middle-aged guy and the [TS]

rest of this build is him taking [TS]

consequences for all of his actions and [TS]

you know we look back at some of those [TS]

actions like that was pretty stupid like [TS]

you just left them on that planet just [TS]

that they know like I found myself for [TS]

the first time I was rooting for con [TS]

last night have been out khan khan has a [TS]

lot of issues but but it he's a jerk is [TS]

not without blame right Kahn is a little [TS]

peeved i watched space seed before i [TS]

watch this for watch this I really did [TS]

  my homework [TS]

I take this thing I did too and it's [TS]

basically he's kind of not Michael guy [TS]

you know Kirk brings my hibernation [TS]

tries to kill you know take over the [TS]

ship and you know in classic stuff that [TS]

you don't think about when you're [TS]

  watching the show [TS]

well I'll just remove removing you on [TS]

this planet and you know we move along [TS]

and this film sort of explores all those [TS]

things we see that with his relationship [TS]

with Carol Marcus we've never heard of [TS]

before and you know all the exposition [TS]

that they set up i think that see with [TS]

mccoy really set up the best because [TS]

those classes come into play [TS]

I never noticed this before those [TS]

classes come into play at three or four [TS]

times throughout the film at critical [TS]

moments and it's like whoever directed [TS]

those scenes are great products chapter [TS]

was middle-aged at that point he plays [TS]

  it really well [TS]

yeah and the glasses of course make a [TS]

cameo appearance in Star Trek for what [TS]

he sells the glasses and of course like [TS]

I gave you those as a present and of [TS]

  course [TS]

Crixus the great things you're going to [TS]

do it again it's right there in a time [TS]

  loop [TS]

I kind of like to forget about Star [TS]

  Trek's 34 [TS]

  well I think what I I think I don't get [TS]

too i believe that but that's another [TS]

  story [TS]

I don't know you and so I watch star [TS]

trek 3 and it made me because I blocked [TS]

my memory and it made me remember that [TS]

two three and four are really just one [TS]

long story that's the kind of yeah if [TS]

you watch them all together it's kind of [TS]

neat and then there's five yeah I don't [TS]

know no other thing that struck me about [TS]

this was recorded about the body is so [TS]

great because in the first series don't [TS]

know who this guy was [TS]

and then this guy want to be associated [TS]

with your car in fee and leather he was [TS]

mr. Arcon Fantasy Island gotten anything [TS]

like that and you see him in this thing [TS]

and all of scenes cop I'm yeah oh yeah [TS]

harder much about what Ricardo Montalban [TS]

please this like a real actor as good as [TS]

Montalban is though and i do not deny [TS]

that he is fantastic in this when they [TS]

made the space seed episode could they [TS]

not find an East Indian actually [TS]

addition to yeah yeah well I mean this [TS]

was you know let's face this fix these [TS]

weak ass to everybody with people that [TS]

wasn't a white guy i mean if we gotta [TS]

get you on a white guy is that close [TS]

enough yeah that's closer it almost [TS]

works in the TV episodes got these are [TS]

the olive complexion as the long black [TS]

  hair [TS]

in the movie with his with his hair [TS]

silver and is his chest of soft [TS]

Corinthian leather he doesn't look [TS]

  Indian any longer [TS]

yeah I think they gave up on the whole [TS]

Indian line he was just a superhuman you [TS]

know superhuman East Indians had a [TS]

different look than anyhow ninety 90 [TS]

seconds genetically engineered to look [TS]

split look mexican in the far future of [TS]

manned sound six the nineties were [TS]

different today was a very different [TS]

time for genetic engineering sleeper [TS]

ships with cryogenic you the eugenics [TS]

wars it was crazy it was it was a wild [TS]

time and I was also another great idea [TS]

lets us know these people and it's been [TS]

damaged basis would have yeah someone [TS]

else probably happiness every step of [TS]

the problem at to someone else later [TS]

lead and it happens again right that's [TS]

all content forget since they just like [TS]

stick him somewhere else until he [TS]

escapes again it's a bad idea is there [TS]

any reason this man is more than a [TS]

  little bit grumpy [TS]

yeah we met was he put on the sleeper [TS]

ship or what did he put him no no he was [TS]

thinking assumption was always that he [TS]

escaped yet flat again he fled exactly [TS]

right they were going to get him so he [TS]

took off thats that's right in space [TS]

seed so um I let's see I i want to go [TS]

from from Kirk's birthday though the [TS]

  saddest birthday party ever [TS]

well there's some Romulan ale but other [TS]

than that it's true and that the first [TS]

time Robin L is mentioned and start yeah [TS]

I had some Romulan ale at the star trek [TS]

experience in Las Vegas it was beer that [TS]

was colored blue Syria and and it wasn't [TS]

  particularly stronger now [TS]

no but had blue food color which me [TS]

makes you wonder why how hard was it to [TS]

smuggle the stuff like is it like [TS]

alcohol in the 23rd century just like [TS]

really really blue from the blue food [TS]

coloring that's hard to get your hands [TS]

  up [TS]

well synthehol so you know nobody wants [TS]

exactly so drunk so we cut to a starship [TS]

reliant which has got a recognizable [TS]

face in mr. check off and if you're a [TS]

fan of the original series you'll [TS]

actually see that the transporter room [TS]

guide mr. Kyle from the original series [TS]

is one of the bridge officers on the [TS]

Reliant which is just random random [TS]

little tidbit to Darmok and and Captain [TS]

Darmok is on this but one of the things [TS]

that's really funny as they make this [TS]

call to Carol Marcus who we first meet [TS]

here who becomes a very important part [TS]

of this movie to talk about in one of my [TS]

favorite lines in this movie checkup [TS]

says doesn't have to be completely [TS]

  lifeless [TS]

and i find that funny because I mean the [TS]

assumption here is that these guys have [TS]

gone from planet to planet throughout [TS]

the known galaxy and every planet has [TS]

life on it which if you think about like [TS]

modern scientific knowledge this is not [TS]

very likely in fact it's probably much [TS]

less likely that and that there are very [TS]

rare plant planets with life right any [TS]

given mode should work as a matter of [TS]

fact exactly the the little space [TS]

station is orbiting at a lifeless movie [TS]

right well they were a little bit [TS]

concerned about the nanoparticle current [TS]

and it because you never know when you [TS]

might find a particle of proto matter [TS]

and maybe it's the words in the sensors [TS]

it's screwed up but there's two big [TS]

metal cargo containers and like a dozen [TS]

super engineered humans down on the [TS]

planet and their sensors and fun get [TS]

nothing but there's not i don't know [TS]

what's good and more importantly is [TS]

every starship not commanded by Kirk you [TS]

know run by an idiot go back to go back [TS]

to every episode i'm doing dr. are just [TS]

these these guys like bozos I mean no [TS]

wonder Kirk was the youngest starship [TS]

captain because I everyone else [TS]

Starfleet Academy there's a recruitment [TS]

problem but Starfleet mike seemed like [TS]

he was competent but he was he was [TS]

immediately thrown aside yeah but I like [TS]

that see because you know the Federation [TS]

and Starfleet officers are always like [TS]

oh we're all professional and we want to [TS]

do a great job and in this scene they're [TS]

kinda like does it really have to be [TS]

things we like it was just kidding baby [TS]

plan that we budget a bit it's close to [TS]

  home [TS]

come on come on with a little microbe or [TS]

two between friends dr. marks private us [TS]

  a little bit crazy [TS]

yeah yeah they don't seem really [TS]

thrilled with this man isn't the whole [TS]

idea of transplanting whatever it is [TS]

kind of against the the prime directive [TS]

well that's funny though because then [TS]

they cut to Carol Marcus and she's like [TS]

well let me get this straight [TS]

it seems when transplanted like yes well [TS]

I don't know that she hangs up and and [TS]

immediately we get that we get that was [TS]

really funny line where where her son [TS]

says it's like a boy scout you you dated [TS]

and she's like look Jim Kirk was many [TS]

things but he was never a boy scout [TS]

which is a great line [TS]

let's do a little work for saturday just [TS]

a little our out its ok and then having [TS]

not seen this film I have to say that I [TS]

immediately said oh sorry yeah yeah i [TS]

mean everyone everyone who's ever seen [TS]

that movie back exactly right in spite [TS]

of in spite of the misdirection that [TS]

they attempt to pull by giving him that [TS]

righteous person yeah yeah which matches [TS]

the curls in shadows to pay so so so [TS]

then we go to study alpha 5 which is a [TS]

sound stage with like a optical print of [TS]

like extra sand blowing and its really [TS]

fake no no that's Teddy office six so [TS]

this is Ceti alpha 5 which is my [TS]

favorite line in the movie and my i was [TS]

saying it over and over again tonight my [TS]

wife is like you are more on the hood [TS]

doesn't have to be able to which i [TS]

replied this is the album [TS]

yeah although there's the scene where it [TS]

is there's some really nice creepy bits [TS]

in here and I like the scene where they [TS]

go into the cargo containers and they're [TS]

like what the hell is this [TS]

in fact i think i think captain Darmok [TS]

says what the hell is this like twice in [TS]

a row he does he does what the hell is [TS]

this and then check off sees the Botany [TS]

Bay logo you know get your own in the [TS]

gift shop Botany Bay thing goes on no [TS]

blood me bay and and and they run [TS]

outside so that's kind of creepy and [TS]

then right where they are immediately [TS]

  unexpectedly presented with the [TS]

polyphonic spree which I thought was [TS]

strange in 98 do this is so bizarre for [TS]

couple of things first of all they do [TS]

that pan over the bookshop because [TS]

you've got to see this copy of Moby Dick [TS]

that right yes and King Lear again we're [TS]

going to foreshadow just a little bit [TS]

arm but then they go outside they see [TS]

these people on my first reaction is why [TS]

aren't they calling the ship it back as [TS]

soon as they see the botany they want to [TS]

getting the hell out of there don't they [TS]

have phasers that communicators they're [TS]

not they're not just a bunch of people [TS]

they're not making any threats Adam they [TS]

don't appear to have any weapons like [TS]

it's never quite clear what they're [TS]

doing other than driving the pot forward [TS]

and in the perennial star trek question [TS]

why to the captain and the first officer [TS]

beam-down themselves to this planet [TS]

well they don't think there's anything [TS]

down there they just want to find [TS]

something to transplant right they're [TS]

lazy and still why wouldn't you say the [TS]

Science Officer yeah it's true as soon [TS]

as they see the cargo container you [TS]

would think that maybe they call in [TS]

backup or but they don't they don't have [TS]

Saavik to to quote regulations at them [TS]

or else they probably would [TS]

is there is one place that can be down [TS]

to and get his communicator control and [TS]

then but they leave there and they can [TS]

it doesn't really make it why wouldn't [TS]

they just be like all know Botany Bay [TS]

no check off too reliant get us out of [TS]

here let's get out the shower i have a [TS]

  simpler explanation [TS]

this is not the a team of stark know [TS]

these guys are on the Reliant looking [TS]

for dead for different roles is probably [TS]

you know we're not trusting these guys [TS]

to actually go out into the neutral zone [TS]

you don't want to exploring sinking [TS]

strange new worlds new life new symbols [TS]

that nobody wanted to find dead and you [TS]

can work for the Genesis people just [TS]

there right now whatever now right no [TS]

first contact for you that there is true [TS]

that when they stay they show the [TS]

Reliant bridge and the two crew members [TS]

are concerned they're they're hailing [TS]

  accountant [TS]

what should be the ones which we do AG [TS]

give it a little shit sometime i'm sure [TS]

  you could find it [TS]

yeah this is something on TV we can [TS]

watch your exactly and they never even [TS]

show them taking over the room because [TS]

they don't have to because these people [TS]

just like you know we surrender yeah [TS]

we're not going to network we're not [TS]

going to audition we're getting else no [TS]

self-destruct nothing we go out they go [TS]

outside of the cargo containers in there [TS]

they're all standing in the desert there [TS]

but the show up on sensors and they [TS]

bring Matt back inside and we know that [TS]

it's constant his bookshelf where he's [TS]

he's got a photographic memory and he [TS]

only has five books and he's been [TS]

married for 15 years so he's cranky and [TS]

he didn't quote every and when I missed [TS]

some sort of regulation yeah it's not [TS]

very no I mean this is why he's so mad [TS]

at Kirk is that correct left with like [TS]

five books for for for all eternity and [TS]

I don't make me mad too [TS]

it's like give me a kid no candles no [TS]

Tigers in the 23rd century it's one of [TS]

those other times one of those books [TS]

have been feed Jason yellowboy of Kirk [TS]

so right can we just say that content a [TS]

few years to think on this city was used [TS]

about it a little bit i'm doing it so [TS]

there's some shots in the in the cargo [TS]

containers the scene of cons people and [TS]

first off there's not sure if there's [TS]

not very many of them it's it's it's not [TS]

a big cast and they're all like 18 year [TS]

old blonde white people right con seems [TS]

to rule a largely headband and multiple [TS]

yet so which is weird because he's this [TS]

he's this eugenic Lee you know you know [TS]

Superman from India and yet he's got [TS]

like a bunch of suburban teenagers [TS]

  following him [TS]

  it's it's it very weird i don't really [TS]

  understand that [TS]

the casting of that it doesn't i [TS]

expected that to be a you know a more [TS]

ethnically diverse and probably like age [TS]

diverse group unless the implication [TS]

there is that the kids were the only [TS]

ones who survived and all the older [TS]

people got heels in their heads except [TS]

for con I don't know I i seem to recall [TS]

though in space seed it was also a [TS]

similarly not averse crowd maybe that [TS]

says well I mean the enterprise itself [TS]

wasn't exactly what we call racially [TS]

diverse you know what actually the Jason [TS]

most of them or from various ethnic [TS]

backgrounds but the whole genetic [TS]

  engineering thing [TS]

oh I see it turned a Mexican into an [TS]

indie I see if it's what i mean but they [TS]

got more than 15 years ago and these [TS]

people were like 19 so did con have a [TS]

was the secret of conscious that most of [TS]

the people who were frozen in it were [TS]

like four-year-olds was this like on [TS]

daycare and it's interesting he did aged [TS]

quite a bit and nobody else appeared to [TS]

ya anyway I are that start putting its [TS]

there's a possibility that they are they [TS]

they are the offspring of khan and his [TS]

wife they could all be his babies having [TS]

  babies [TS]

Tom Jim Henson's cotton panties so [TS]

here's the thing we talked about how [TS]

good you know multiple bond he does lots [TS]

of lots of shouting and and great [TS]

over-the-top stuff but there-there is he [TS]

shows a little restraint very few places [TS]

in this movie but early on in this movie [TS]

he showed some great restraint that [TS]

right at the beginning when uh when maze [TS]

today I demand to know the meaning of [TS]

this and he has these create initial [TS]

lines which is you know you're in a [TS]

position to demand nothing and then he [TS]

starts sighs and says I am in a position [TS]

to grant nothing un un it's it's he [TS]

could have he could chew the scenery [TS]

with outline to and what I like about [TS]

that is that that's that moment when you [TS]

realize you know the ego that he has his [TS]

frustration at having been beaten and [TS]

been stewing about it for 15 years and [TS]

you know he's going to explode but it's [TS]

that it's a nice moment where you just [TS]

  know he's he's a he's he's building up [TS]

his anger he's ready to explode yeah [TS]

Montalban hasn't you know he's not going [TS]

to go over the top two in order to [TS]

explode you first have to have to dial [TS]

it down a little bit so you have some [TS]

range and it's a nice moment where you [TS]

just send his frustration it's like you [TS]

know I I think so highly of me [TS]

self but I got nothing here this is [TS]

we've been living out of boxes for 15 [TS]

  years [TS]

that's the fuse hissing as the sparkle [TS]

you have towards the body of the this is [TS]

setting out 45 but I looked at that [TS]

scene and i said and i have one you [TS]

choose like no he's not he's got mad and [TS]

and now he's like you could see the [TS]

wheels spinning like he's putting his [TS]

plan into action by I he's got something [TS]

here I was trying to figure out what [TS]

he's got and and how can he play it to [TS]

his advantage and you see it when he [TS]

says you know and check out those no [TS]

captain kirk captain because that [TS]

Admiral Curtis but that they promoted [TS]

that bone tries out all of the potential [TS]

life stress points all pronunciations [TS]

yes add mirror at mirror rah Commodore [TS]

no ad marrow Admiral Kirk never bothered [TS]

to check our progress and that's when [TS]

you start thinking about ya was that [TS]

list or idea current good [TS]

oh maybe not you know making a note of [TS]

it somewhere in a log [TS]

just so y'all know yeah maybe the rest [TS]

of the federal check on them send [TS]

someone out that now they just went [TS]

about their merry way that was what they [TS]

done anyway and then I started thinking [TS]

wow how many planets that these guys [TS]

drop how many civilizations because they [TS]

just did stuff and said not our problem [TS]

anymore you know wow we're destroying [TS]

civilization and their God in their [TS]

culture and now we're just going to move [TS]

  right along [TS]

true but and you would think so check [TS]

off was there well he wasn't actually [TS]

there in the original show right right [TS]

you would the in this movie he [TS]

apparently was there because a con [TS]

recognizes him and so you would think [TS]

hey we are in this system i happen to [TS]

know who that we ruin these people at [TS]

city of 45 so while we're checking the [TS]

lifeless Ceti alpha six maybe mission [TS]

structure for that they're still there [TS]

just drop by and see how cons doing at [TS]

that party will just bought me a big pot [TS]

and you down the planets count the [TS]

planets a planet is missing [TS]

huh let's check closer huh the the [TS]

carpets are a little bit wrong the [TS]

missing planet shouldn't and that's when [TS]

  I think there's a line [TS]

message on the screen a little alert [TS]

comes up a dialog box on the screen of [TS]

the Reliant that says recent things that [TS]

have happened in this system khan was [TS]

marooned here what it was disturbed by [TS]

  it [TS]

planet exploded hurt never bother filing [TS]

a report with the Federation he was [TS]

never big on pillow it just never got [TS]

this area you mentioned it is Captain's [TS]

Log though I yeah at the end he [TS]

mentioned something about con reject the [TS]

captain at the captain's log with [TS]

Russian yeah I just like the best part [TS]

when I saw this in the theaters and [TS]

  condos [TS]

I know you like 10 people in the [TS]

audience go no you don't you worn in [TS]

space down in the depths of the shipment [TS]

something in 1982 when you could get [TS]

netflix it did it was serious [TS]

I mean these people weren't absolutely [TS]

serious and I'm gonna accuse in that [TS]

Nicholas II know you guys really didn't [TS]

know each other or at that point checkup [TS]

was already showing his potential and [TS]

was like swabbing decks on the [TS]

enterprise no gearing him up his future [TS]

work on the remaining like 15 years [TS]

that's not yet with the monkeys haircut [TS]

yeah so so we shift gears from study of [TS]

45 to go back to the what we talked [TS]

about their we get the flyby of the [TS]

enterprise which shows a little bit of [TS]

restraint not coming because before you [TS]

get to that right at you get that really [TS]

gross scene they cut the Kirk and he's [TS]

sitting there with his reading glasses [TS]

on the shuttle yes totally [TS]

and i love that right the rest of the [TS]

world is about to explode and he's [TS]

sitting there with those granny glasses [TS]

on trying to read as a lot of these [TS]

newspapers they're flying up there and [TS]

it's like to me it was like great like [TS]

his world is about to fall apart yeah [TS]

the transition starts with the with Khan [TS]

saying where can I find James Kirk and [TS]

they got away to Kirk in the shuttle and [TS]

it looks for all the world like he's [TS]

  sitting on the can [TS]

yeah reading the paper he's a book with [TS]

his pants down again I'm gonna sit there [TS]

smoking jacket on you know but not some [TS]

  Klingon opera rod [TS]

just chilling out exactly what else I [TS]

also I i have a whole line here that I'm [TS]

not gonna get into too much about i'm [TS]

not convinced about the set eels biology [TS]

why wasn't that it was the only animal [TS]

on the entire planet who survived why [TS]

does it keep the young between its [TS]

spines what is the motivation to crawl [TS]

into a near why does it crawl out of [TS]

Chekhov's here at the end I don't really [TS]

understand that is puzzling that was [TS]

yeah that was a big is it not a hundred [TS]

percent fatal maybe sometimes they [TS]

  decide to leave [TS]

other times they don't wanna kill you I [TS]

don't know it's a peculiar animal is all [TS]

I'm saying lied about that part [TS]

yes he didn't he didn't do a survey of [TS]

the planet to find out whether other [TS]

animals had survived liar he just [TS]

assumed that might have been what what [TS]

they were out doing when check off and [TS]

and the other captain arrived [TS]

well you know this is another one of [TS]

those worlds within its higher you know [TS]

just mono climate yeah it's the desert [TS]

well it used to have more climates but [TS]

but then then another planet exploded [TS]

inexplicably night there was life you [TS]

would given a fair chance this is [TS]

setting out for Scott is that good I [TS]

just going to keep doing that because i [TS]

know i'm just-just kit is good yeah that [TS]

you've ruined us all you've ruined it [TS]

for all of our lives and family members [TS]

best scenes and the court cases answer [TS]

  to any question [TS]

ok so they get to get on the ship and [TS]

Kirk keeps walking around with that book [TS]

under his arm to throughout this which I [TS]

occasionally I will find myself [TS]

somewhere with a book under my arm and I [TS]

and i get i get all tense I'm like I'm [TS]

like Captain Kirk now I gotta book under [TS]

my arm it's very strange and and they [TS]

get on the bridge and there's this the [TS]

funny moment where spot gets out of the [TS]

chair and basically says his sonic how [TS]

many times you piloted ship out of space [TS]

to actually well I've never done it like [TS]

to do it take it out and then and then [TS]

Kirk and McCoy you're like holy cow what [TS]

Scott was back spark you drive the ship [TS]

don't I love the bones line there to [TS]

which you like right click here and and [TS]

the looks on their faces are so volatile [TS]

yeah you know a horrible and it's like [TS]

using your kid out to drive for the [TS]

first time you're standing in you know [TS]

the passenger seat you kind of have your [TS]

foot on an invisible break [TS]

trust me about that what I'm looking at [TS]

is how difficult is it to take the ship [TS]

  out of stock involved [TS]

basically saying the following things [TS]

after oscars just one quarter and more [TS]

word that's ahead step grandmother said [TS]

  warp nine [TS]

well having now seen galaxy quest i know [TS]

that it's harder than if you crash don't [TS]

blame Sulu at that point of lines [TS]

I mean soon what did you do I just said [TS]

forward why did you left I I didn't say [TS]

that spirit is their manual transmission [TS]

on the enterprise that I don't know what [TS]

what's nice about it is it it put Spock [TS]

in his role as a teacher right Kirk is [TS]

uncomfortable because Kirk wants to be [TS]

in the chair he wants to be in command [TS]

Spock doesn't need to be in the chair he [TS]

and he says this again later [TS]

he's he's here to teach her and make [TS]

give her that the first experience of [TS]

piloting the ship because she's his you [TS]

know officer that he's grooming for for [TS]

promotion and leadership and that's why [TS]

Spock is here and that's that's the [TS]

difference between Kirk and Spock is [TS]

kirk is the man of action [TS]

he wants to be in the chair giving [TS]

commands and Spock doesn't need it he's [TS]

just here to have his students learn so [TS]

but in this scene though it almost seems [TS]

like although it would be entirely [TS]

illogical that he's kind of dorky and [TS]

with Kirk because he sees him come in oh [TS]

  yeah [TS]

his eyebrow go up notices that card box [TS]

and this is true then does he have [TS]

static come and take the Conn well yeah [TS]

but i think i think Spock throughout [TS]

these things is trying to teach calculus [TS]

incur keep saying you know is denying [TS]

himself and said throughout this movie [TS]

spot keeps trying to say look you know [TS]

what you may be middle-aged but this is [TS]

who you are you going to do this until [TS]

you die yeah so stop sitting there [TS]

pushing paper and I think he doesn't [TS]

intentionally just drive Kirk a little [TS]

bit crazy you know that the HU and that [TS]

should be you in that chair you you and [TS]

I both know you should be sitting there [TS]

not her and I'm gonna have her dry [TS]

yeah now see that is entirely logical [TS]

good work you go sit in the back in and [TS]

put your glasses on and read a book [TS]

called a Lincoln she's gonna say the [TS]

sentences that makes this Bashir move [TS]

yeah she's gonna tell he's gonna tell [TS]

Sulu to press the button because of our [TS]

head half a good job so then that [TS]

  there's a there's a really nice scene [TS]

that win in the in the turbolift where [TS]

Kirk goes into the elevator and and and [TS]

he runs into sabic and she's got her [TS]

hair different her hair's down and she's [TS]

wearing like this kind of regulation [TS]

  Starfleet [TS]

bath robe or something it's her straight [TS]

and and as a kid watching this on VHS [TS]

this scene was a couple of single shots [TS]

back and forth as they talk and then I [TS]

got the DVD in its letter box and it [TS]

turns out that the way they did this and [TS]

the DVD is it's a it's a single shot so [TS]

they they entered the turbolift in the [TS]

doors closed and there in one and by the [TS]

end of the scene they open again and [TS]

they're in someplace else so they've [TS]

obviously been like moving the set [TS]

around and the VHS version completely [TS]

ruins it by cutting back and forth but [TS]

what's cool about it is you know Kirk [TS]

ass about her hair and all of that which [TS]

is just kind of random and and and then [TS]

she asked about the Kobayashi Maru and [TS]

he he completely evades her and then she [TS]

leaves and and McCoy comes in and set [TS]

and does the question we always ask [TS]

who's been holding up the damn elevator [TS]

right because they pause these elevators [TS]

all the time and it's like how many [TS]

backup elevators Union and the [TS]

enterprise for people have conversations [TS]

like meetings are held in the elevators [TS]

and bone says like what the hell i'm [TS]

waiting for an elevator here she leaves [TS]

he comes in and then alignment kills me [TS]

and I just I love it for what it says [TS]

about bones and what it says about [TS]

courtesies it did she change her hair [TS]

and purchase i didn't notice wire first [TS]

and you know he noticed because she at [TS]

one point she goes for the button and he [TS]

actually flinches only pulls away [TS]

oh yeah oh my god what's going on well [TS]

just freaking out because it's sort of [TS]

like an intern being alone with you know [TS]

Bill Clinton and it's sort of like you [TS]

know its regulations are haha wow I'm [TS]

dressed properly a nice podcast and told [TS]

her about Kirk I think that's very [TS]

clearly he's done that so then Carol [TS]

Marcus comes up and that's actually a [TS]

really nice moment where bones like low [TS]

Carol Marcus ah and perk just gets [TS]

really pissed off and and and and bones [TS]

like sorry I you know geez I didn't [TS]

sensitive there but it's I i really love [TS]

that scene because there's so much going [TS]

on it this would be a good time probably [TS]

to point out how crucial bones at home [TS]

and enjoyment of Star Trek problem and [TS]

well he said such a great Harry during [TS]

his his delivery is fantastic he always [TS]

gets the best yawns it's the [TS]

cantankerous bastard is probably my [TS]

all-time favorite archetype and and I [TS]

don't think before anybody has done it [TS]

better than the forest Kelly in any TV [TS]

show that I can anytime [TS]

anything is being taken too seriously [TS]

you get bones in there in these needling [TS]

people and it doesn't matter who you can [TS]

needle kirky needle Spock hehe will [TS]

question the whole premise of something [TS]

  just because he's cranky [TS]

it's great he is such a great goes well [TS]

there's a couple of great moments and [TS]

where we're not we're not quite there [TS]

yet there's one great line when they're [TS]

actually you know later on Spock says [TS]

then they are leaving its boxes be [TS]

careful Jim before he goes we will like [TS]

the classic of between India are these [TS]

are three people that have you know [TS]

grown older together they've been [TS]

through a lot together and you know that [TS]

they're just trying to help them get [TS]

through this midlife crisis and [TS]

fortunately there was a little crisis up [TS]

the universe coming longer to help this [TS]

yeah yeah absolutely it's everything [TS]

that that interaction the character [TS]

interaction is is one of the things that [TS]

makes the movie so much fun [TS]

so the next scene is we cut away to [TS]

space station regular one and at the end [TS]

the one seat scene where it's not just [TS]

sort of Carol and David but that you've [TS]

got like five or six other members of [TS]

the science team there and I just wanted [TS]

to mention that because they don't [TS]

really you know until they're dead [TS]

bodies are hanging upside down you don't [TS]

really see much of them and I feel like [TS]

there's an entire other movie here that [TS]

we don't see which is the story of the [TS]

science team that infants this amazing [TS]

thing and they're working with the [TS]

government to figure out where to deploy [TS]

it and then the thing gets perverted and [TS]

this you know the ship comes to take it [TS]

away but it turns out there these crazy [TS]

people who are like almost savage people [TS]

who come out and they they they attack [TS]

them and they're they're trying to buy [TS]

time for the people to escape and that [TS]

people are tortured but they don't give [TS]

up the information just like this [TS]

amazing other story about what happens [TS]

to the science team and we don't see any [TS]

of it right i mean we see them murmur [TS]

what do you mean that they're coming to [TS]

get our thing and then they're dead and [TS]

and we don't see the rest of its absence [TS]

but I think that's great because they [TS]

did not spend a lot of time in this [TS]

movie with stupid exposition there [TS]

aren't a whole lot of long speeches if [TS]

they made that today they would have [TS]

  added on [TS]

another 40 minutes to tell that I'm sure [TS]

but I want to need like that in me as a [TS]

kid I read the read the novelization of [TS]

this of this movie and there's a little [TS]

bit more of character development of [TS]

these guys and and I think about that [TS]

every time I see them hanging upside [TS]

down with their throats got it's like oh [TS]

poor scientists they did you know [TS]

because it's kind of a nice story they [TS]

like they refused to answer common [TS]

questions they buy time for them to get [TS]

Genesis away but so there's that moment [TS]

here where we were we see them getting [TS]

upset that that Chekhov is said they're [TS]

going to come take Genesis away and we [TS]

know that bad things are gonna happen to [TS]

this poor our friends in the in the [TS]

science team and then you cut back to [TS]

the enterprise and once again the [TS]

enterprise's the only ship in the [TS]

quadrant that can deal with a with a [TS]

crisis absolutely no sense why would the [TS]

enterprise be the only ship in the [TS]

quadrant that has earth it has a very [TS]

City headquarters of Starfleet doesn't [TS]

make any sense i guess study alpha 5 is [TS]

a back with this is Ceti alpha 5 and but [TS]

not only that but don't they know the [TS]

run line isn't that quadrants [TS]

yeah it's true it's very close by so I I [TS]

have a theory that it's not the only [TS]

ship in the quadrant and it's really [TS]

just Kirk being like it's Carol Marcus [TS]

something's going on I want to take [TS]

control of the ship anyway [TS]

yeah we're the only ones really who are [TS]

closed um really so I'm gonna take over [TS]

now okay just let me know checkout is at [TS]

the helm of the reliance so there's that [TS]

they got a problem my sexy with Carol [TS]

Marcus is great because it's where [TS]

they're using AT&T to communicate so [TS]

it's not under century 80s the franchise [TS]

they can't keep a signal goes only one [TS]

bar that regular one that's right one [TS]

bar why it was right like talking on an [TS]

iphone in your idea what you say I can't [TS]

  hello what up [TS]

it was programmed by the same gun is [TS]

auto pilot out of this big throughout [TS]

their static to which is funny because [TS]

now in a digital era there's no snow but [TS]

it's like TV static like [TS]

oh I could barely make you out let them [TS]

eat static yes exactly right [TS]

it's all it's all actually TV static but [TS]

what is this static of which you speak [TS]

let them eat MPEG artifacts haha that'll [TS]

  teach me [TS]

let them eat skype interference but then [TS]

you have a great scene with Kirk and [TS]

Spock I think that's a fantastic see [TS]

yes I always like seeing Spock's [TS]

quarters because it looks for all the [TS]

world like that the anteroom of a [TS]

benihana expecting somebody to walk up [TS]

and ask if you want to sit in the dining [TS]

room or do you want tap on interesting [TS]

interesting i did make an i made a note [TS]

that says Spock's quarters kind of tacky [TS]

yeah he's not into the material things [TS]

he's just got a rug gonna thing hanging [TS]

on the wall a dreamcatcher maybe range [TS]

mirror made of pennies apparently yeah [TS]

and I swear to God that mirror with all [TS]

the lightbulbs my parents had that on [TS]

their wall shop in 1984 yeah well most [TS]

people don't know is that Spock really [TS]

was a fan of nineteen seventies [TS]

memorabilia and connected it yeah he's [TS]

got a Fleetwood Mac Fleetwood Mac [TS]

outside there's a lava lamp on his [TS]

bedside table that I believe that cut on [TS]

the internet you go it's only logical to [TS]

Remember Who khan was in space seed but [TS]

spock knew all about the lava lamp [TS]

exactly that's correct this is this is [TS]

the key scene that we're we're yes and [TS]

actually I i would like to pair it with [TS]

the scene that follows immediately which [TS]

is where cons right-hand man [TS]

yo Keem talks to him we can't you know [TS]

cons right-hand man is you walk him [TS]

yes lock in yes your walkie now I love n [TS]

jus he does say it you said at the end [TS]

he does said unlike some of the Star [TS]

Wars characters that Dan and John talked [TS]

about and they know them and they're [TS]

only actually named that because of [TS]

their action figure you're walking home [TS]

is actually named in the in the movie [TS]

it's justin scott he was in a bunch of [TS]

TV shows in the eighties if you'd like [TS]

to prefer to say that it's jason scott [TS]

from like the Phoenix and other random [TS]

shows that were on the eighties but [TS]

anyway so no I'm okay with lockheed [TS]

Milwaukee no always baby always be [TS]

walking to me that what you notice i [TS]

didn't know he was out of an issue or a [TS]

bubble wrap or something at one point [TS]

and that's how you knew his name no no [TS]

that's the only reason anybody knew the [TS]

  lig 88 was exactly [TS]

no no he's actually mentioned move [TS]

unlike many of the Star Wars characters [TS]

so we get the needs of the many and the [TS]

needs of the few i have been and always [TS]

shall be your friend but what really is [TS]

great here is that Kirk is really [TS]

apologetic right he's like well there's [TS]

this thing and it's box-like take a ship [TS]

and critics like no no I don't want the [TS]

  show [TS]

no no you just drop me on the getting [TS]

getting this year we just let me off [TS]

drop me off in yourself responsible time [TS]

time again you can command the ship full [TS]

of trainees and nothing bad will happen [TS]

to them yeah exactly right [TS]

surely there were not be at an emergency [TS]

of some kind that well well we forgot [TS]

that scene when he meets body when they [TS]

first get on there he goes over to one [TS]

of the trainees you like what's your [TS]

name and it's like I'm going he's dead [TS]

shirt and apparently movie categorize [TS]

guy at some point that guy is that I [TS]

think in the novelization that was like [TS]

studies it's actually think they shot [TS]

scenes and and cut them and they're in [TS]

the deleted scenes that is scotty's [TS]

nephew and there's there's more about [TS]

that makes it that much it actually is a [TS]

very sad scene when he dies and Scotty [TS]

said it doesn't really matter whether [TS]

he's relative or not he's got he's just [TS]

upset that he was doing his duty and me [TS]

and he died there there is a certain set [TS]

of logic that these not Scotty's nephew [TS]

isn't why the hell is he bringing this [TS]

one who guided the bridge instead of [TS]

sickbay because he's loopy from the fee [TS]

i mean is that they may be the place [TS]

maybe well he was he was the only one [TS]

that stayed at his post know what's [TS]

going well everybody else bailed and so [TS]

he was probably the one that was close [TS]

at hand so Scotty could come and present [TS]

  him dramatically [TS]

yeah yeah that's right here that's right [TS]

that's the young kid in the war movie [TS]

you know he's dead he's got seconds to [TS]

show me that that's 23rd century this is [TS]

the first they don't have any red shirts [TS]

anymore they're all wearing red shirts [TS]

we now have the white guys white [TS]

jumpsuit guy white is the new red yeah [TS]

so so I'm so I i like and one other [TS]

thing that I noticed at in the scene [TS]

where they enter and Spock is sitting [TS]

there and maybe this is just common lore [TS]

amongst the Star Trek fans but Spock is [TS]

actually sitting there meditating with [TS]

the live long and prosper hands going oh [TS]

he's got it he's got his hands together [TS]

and kind of a praying way but his [TS]

  fingers are separated [TS]

live long and prosper style that's how [TS]

they do it on Vulcan man and how they [TS]

roll that is so so so this box has taken [TS]

ship look I'm here as a teacher you know [TS]

you should be in charge anyway and I [TS]

want to get the counterpoint is with [TS]

your welcome and con is your items like [TS]

dude we got a ship or three [TS]

we're not on the sand planet anymore we [TS]

can go anywhere we want [TS]

let's get out of here and cut his condo [TS]

no I gotta get Kirk it doesn't matter of [TS]

your high heat ask me that's I mean [TS]

  that's it you know [TS]

easy and I said that's the point where [TS]

Kirk becomes the white well right at [TS]

that scene yeah and you know these guys [TS]

are just too loyal to him and they're [TS]

not going to say no but you can think on [TS]

my god this you know he's lost it [TS]

we could be out of here we got the [TS]

remaining because we captured the [TS]

dumbest ruined in the Federation yeah [TS]

what do we need this work and he'll try [TS]

  that again [TS]

no we're going to see that movie where [TS]

he goes later and we got Genesis we got [TS]

through a lot of what more do you want [TS]

let's get out of here now what's [TS]

interesting though is he does later [TS]

  actually listen to what [TS]

joaquim says to him and he actually [TS]

forget what the point is but oh when [TS]

  they're they're damaged and they're [TS]

forced to pull away right [TS]

he actually leaves us with your not so [TS]

far gone that he won't listen to his is [TS]

like whenever he fights first first the [TS]

argument right now and he goes and goes [TS]

you know commander is it that there is [TS]

some degree you could see that he said [TS]

some grip on reality but every so often [TS]

he slips kind of back into that madness [TS]

but right there is a thing there with [TS]

the council on the advice that he's [TS]

getting that's sort of when we get the [TS]

sense that this is now personal this is [TS]

no longer you know I you know that this [TS]

is nuts the band of marauders he's after [TS]

Admiral Kirk and I think the fact that [TS]

he made Admirals but pushed him over the [TS]

edge at marijuana that was it at at mira [TS]

that just push them over it and Tamara [TS]

at this point I made a note that is [TS]

common is a little obsessed with Kirk [TS]

analysis very good insight yes thank you [TS]

agree agree how did you catch that it's [TS]

  subtle [TS]

it's subtle most of us would have missed [TS]

it it's true you have to really pay [TS]

attention to pick up that subtlety of [TS]

his performance is very cold you're [TS]

walking City le Larry it is where i am a [TS]

third watch you'll see it now i think [TS]

around the 30 second time i got so the [TS]

Genesis briefing room seemed the first [TS]

major like CGI in a movie [TS]

remember when retinal scans were science [TS]

fiction so I i would have my notes say I [TS]

get a retina scan of the doctor every [TS]

year its there's a picture shows you top [TS]

  secret information [TS]

yeah I think about that scene every time [TS]

identify for retinal scan and it's like [TS]

  yeah it looks good [TS]

come back next year but but it you know [TS]

  we don't have glaucoma [TS]

yeah and this is where McCoy is again at [TS]

his cranky best right which is like you [TS]

green-blooded Vulcan this is bad spots [TS]

like whatever and in Japanese and you [TS]

know what I'm thinking I'm thinking this [TS]

is a kickstarter video it is it is sure [TS]

that's right it's the root cause up if [TS]

you give us up if we get enough backers [TS]

and frankly you know for 500 credits you [TS]

will get my call planet of your own will [TS]

take your visit the moon will just do [TS]

  something for you [TS]

they really kind of blow it though [TS]

because they talked up and how it's a [TS]

life generating device but they don't [TS]

make any mention at all of how it's [TS]

apparently also a water and atmosphere [TS]

generated and and son it creates a [TS]

sun-times it does a lot of haha cool [TS]

stuff even indoors it creates a son [TS]

it's amazing it is it but I don't don't [TS]

but no the Kickstarter like bonuses if [TS]

you take it to 1 million credits then [TS]

we'll make dragons that's just so that's [TS]

just a little sweetener if we get to a [TS]

million obviously you can have your own [TS]

species yeah and if you have one guy do [TS]

all the fields for you slide apart fast [TS]

he'll Brandon struck me as you know I [TS]

said this is like 23rd century [TS]

Kickstarter they're putting it out there [TS]

is kickstarter video and the [TS]

Federation's alright will find you and I [TS]

will give the other is just the venture [TS]

capital arm arm you said they only put [TS]

enough to get the t-shirt though [TS]

yeah yeah and and the Reliant what [TS]

and you know someone had a good copy of [TS]

photoshop and rendering program is just [TS]

the demo showing you were just showing [TS]

you some graphic that's a little CTR [TS]

it's pretty basic bond it's all done in [TS]

  flash 23rd century flash [TS]

oh I love I did you love one bit though [TS]

in that briefing well tube it's actually [TS]

the first is that is that I'd i love how [TS]

Kirk always sort of half rolls his eyes [TS]

when spot goes on what is magical and [TS]

there's a great instances where are we [TS]

going to do this again talking he's [TS]

talking to bones about logic and [TS]

incorrect size just go to the rainbow [TS]

over the other side of his head it's [TS]

it's a great scene and McCoys ranting [TS]

about them around that's what this thing [TS]

right it doesn't be used as a weapon for [TS]

of it as a weapon my god and furthermore [TS]

Spock there is great too which is you [TS]

must learn to govern your passions they [TS]

will be your undoing which is given the [TS]

way this movie plays out is is prescient [TS]

  in a different way [TS]

interesting yeah yes all right space [TS]

battle this is this is for my money I [TS]

think this is the best sort of like [TS]

tactical space battle scene that I've [TS]

ever seen and I there are Star Wars Star [TS]

Wars movies we've got the fleet of ships [TS]

and they're all coming on pew pew and [TS]

they're moving around are very exciting [TS]

but you know I never really get much of [TS]

a sense of tactics from that whereas in [TS]

star trek to we've got you know two [TS]

ships and and it's like a battled see or [TS]

  a submarine battle it's it's it's a [TS]

one-on-one kind of thing and then you [TS]

can actually understand where they are [TS]

which in modern action movies is [TS]

actually quite rare and what they're [TS]

doing and what the strategy is first [TS]

when the Reliant sneak sort of sneaks up [TS]

right in plain view on the enterprise [TS]

and blows them away before they can turn [TS]

on their shields and then the the [TS]

reversal that happens at the end of the [TS]

scene just so much tension the music [TS]

James Horner's music is great in this [TS]

whole movie but here it's a it's State [TS]

Building vacuum is that starts coming up [TS]

the music builds and these were awake [TS]

capital ships should be finding they're [TS]

not dog fighting i'm gonna find around [TS]

each other and then you know is it with [TS]

joysticks is and perhaps later films we [TS]

discovered that the enterprise can be [TS]

  flown by a joystick [TS]

but what I loved about this was here's [TS]

where we see Kirk slipping up he's a [TS]

  half's he's literally a half-step to [TS]

slow and I i remember seeing this movie [TS]

even last night I was watching your [TS]

screaming raise the shield yeah that [TS]

  states the racing shields [TS]

yes and and they're charging faces yes [TS]

and and they're locking on target [TS]

yes and I didn't uh it does support his [TS]

theory that he's going senile to be [TS]

  honest [TS]

well that's why i said he is he really [TS]

is a half step slower this is where he [TS]

gets sort of shaking out of this [TS]

complacency and shakes the rest off [TS]

though i think is is this moment yes but [TS]

but true to your point he's still miles [TS]

better than every other commander in [TS]

Starfleet in spite of everything lost [TS]

  his step [TS]

but once again seen that I love he's [TS]

looking up the prefix though he's got to [TS]

put the damn glasses on because he can [TS]

speak just the second card i gotta put [TS]

my hearing aid in got glasses on its [TS]

second turn around and say hi to tell [TS]

Conda to wait for him that I love that [TS]

it's whip them off turns around tells [TS]

con hold it and then put them back on so [TS]

we can look again and it grew up in it [TS]

as a theater actor and there's some of [TS]

this theatrical flourishes of the got [TS]

the glasses and it's coming through now [TS]

con but this is so great because you see [TS]

the wheel starting to spin with kirk and [TS]

this is the the archetypal Captain Kirk [TS]

has a trick to pull from the original [TS]

series which is he's figuring it out and [TS]

there's that I love the moment where he [TS]

says keep nodding like I'm still giving [TS]

orders but it's just not just keep it no [TS]

ever tell you that I gotta say I'm [TS]

  working it out now [TS]

i do question the security ramifications [TS]

of being able to have a five digit pin [TS]

number to control some any random [TS]

because I had never thought of that [TS]

before as i watch this but I was like [TS]

what you can take over another starship [TS]

if you know a five-digit code my [TS]

password to get into my email is longer [TS]

than the code you need to take over a [TS]

  Federation starship I i think it's i [TS]

think it's the Kirk as an admiral and [TS]

and they're on the enterprise they've [TS]

got like the the master key and then [TS]

they also need the encryption pin and [TS]

it's supposed to stop the runaway [TS]

starships yeah five digits and [TS]

and they're not even input on like a [TS]

like a number pad their input on a [TS]

series of individual switches and 0 [TS]

  through 9 [TS]

what thats that's the tricky part though [TS]

you need to know the sequence of [TS]

switches yeah that is exactly what he [TS]

said I'm drop down down left right left [TS]

right be a their shields are dropping [TS]

there was one other thing in that scene [TS]

that I thought was a little bit strange [TS]

because he calls out Scotty oh do we [TS]

have anything now we're dead in the [TS]

water and purchase try the auxiliary [TS]

power is guys like oh yeah okay I didn't [TS]

think I think that everything smells [TS]

really good hour on the ship so so I'm [TS]

the C batteries in the warp drive we're [TS]

going to get so when you watch this back [TS]

one of the things that that is [TS]

fascinating knowing every single bead of [TS]

this movie is to watch the setups and [TS]

and we see the the mechanism for knowing [TS]

but shields are up or down like four [TS]

times before the moment where he drops [TS]

the shields on them and so when that [TS]

  moment comes [TS]

you're like oh I know what's happening [TS]

at the little dots are leaving around [TS]

the ship and that means their shields [TS]

are down but they they set it up there's [TS]

like you know there's multiple shots of [TS]

different times of shields coming up or [TS]

down showing that screen and it is such [TS]

  a wonderful moment I mean I know it's [TS]

just it's it's a they invented something [TS]

so it's in some ways it's a deus ex [TS]

machina but you know i love that it's [TS]

it's showing the characters thinking [TS]

about you know Kirk's advantages the [TS]

Kirk knows the rules here and even [TS]

though he's he has blown it by being a [TS]

  step too slow [TS]

he knows things and this this ends up [TS]

being cons on doing at the end to in the [TS]

final fight scene is you know client is [TS]

  brilliant but he's obsessed [TS]

that's one problem and the second [TS]

problem is the con is not from he's from [TS]

the 20th century and Kirk knows the [TS]

rules that he doesn't know and and so [TS]

knowing the prefix code and and this [TS]

time Kirk doesn't hesitate right he's [TS]

  like drop the shields [TS]

fire fire fire and there we go for the [TS]

first time his age is not on our up on [TS]

  liability [TS]

he's got experience he knows right any [TS]

lectures you'll have to know just you [TS]

know how things were going to know why [TS]

  they were [TS]

right but we should know from space seed [TS]

though that Khan has studied the [TS]

technical manuals of the enterprise fish [TS]

really should be something that's in [TS]

there but he didn't think to to change [TS]

the prefix codes and he forgot his nine [TS]

right I guess that wasn't in the tech [TS]

manual I've it would have been nice if [TS]

there had been the scene where your [TS]

argument comes up into sir I think we [TS]

should change the prefixes no no thats [TS]

want him without history fix coat and an [TS]

expression of a space that's the first [TS]

time you see the old Kirk when he goes [TS]

here it comes on to number you just [TS]

stand by their side over its on the legs [TS]

and you know he would have just turned [TS]

change the password to Ceti alpha five [TS]

so really you could've guessed it easily [TS]

and then yeah might as well now a [TS]

question for the the star trek that I [TS]

don't you want to the shield's actually [TS]

turn on slowly around the ship as they [TS]

appear to in the in the overhead display [TS]

that is if you have the dramatic setting [TS]

on on your shields yes they should they [TS]

had a comment I would you turn that off [TS]

I did you have to charge you know it [TS]

makes a certain amount of sense is super [TS]

excited that we've ever seen some of [TS]

these systems in operation i thought [TS]

they played out pretty logical yeah i'm [TS]

just wondering if that ever comes up in [TS]

a film or an emphasis as the shields are [TS]

traveling slowly around the back and [TS]

never somebody shoots him in the back [TS]

never see the shield's I mean it's [TS]

really only the device of like you know [TS]

shields are down to twenty percent we [TS]

can't take another hit like that you [TS]

know that kind of that kind of thing [TS]

this is this is a closed complex shield [TS]

kind of thing and star trek because it's [TS]

like to go up and down and it actually [TS]

actually matters whether it's up or down [TS]

there's something technical about it [TS]

it's like you know they also like the [TS]

battery on my phone you know what [TS]

minutes a hundred percent next not a [TS]

10-percent there's no wonder these [TS]

things for a hundred percent next minute [TS]

they're about like this field can take [TS]

one it would be interesting if i press [TS]

the sleep button on my iPhone and [TS]

instead of just shutting off when do [TS]

people around the edges and then went [TS]

off that would be the best bit about [TS]

that tactical that whole battle scene [TS]

though is as always is the case in Star [TS]

Trek is the reaction of the crew and [TS]

that and the command team when they get [TS]

hit but there's nothing more wonderful [TS]

than seeing guys hurl themselves across [TS]

the parade there's a champion that first [TS]

shot that they take there's a guy and [TS]

you gotta watch for it [TS]

who is screaming and his body just flies [TS]

on I totally nominate him for the the [TS]

successor to the wilhelm scream because [TS]

it is a fantastic screen he lets out [TS]

he's flying all the way actually then [TS]

hurls himself all the way across the [TS]

bridge from one side to the other [TS]

it's magnificent there is some mayhem [TS]

going on there and i love that scene [TS]

also right before they just over the [TS]

  bridge [TS]

it's not clear why he does that they're [TS]

not any safer off the bridge but it's [TS]

like he doesn't want to screw up is his [TS]

subject and they don't know about the [TS]

prefix codes and they're not going to be [TS]

good actors this is between me and [TS]

Connie won't nod as if i'm giving orders [TS]

so they're going to get it will be like [TS]

what you're not giving orders captain [TS]

I I Admiral Kirk up [TS]

I I Admiral Kirk up [TS]

very confused what's going on i also [TS]

love how parts of the bridge just sort [TS]

of spontaneously burst into flame even [TS]

though one would assume that the bridge [TS]

is insulated from the outer Hall by at [TS]

least a couple hundred yards [TS]

it's the manual exfoliation Kobayashi [TS]

Maru simulation but the console that [TS]

Kirk is that is is always it's like [TS]

somebody just little barbecue right in [TS]

fact that there's like a hibachi going [TS]

on in the background space wiring is [TS]

hard Steve space wiring and right you [TS]

know it's clear that that someone has [TS]

been giving payoffs to the Federation [TS]

  electrical engineering inspectors goes [TS]

to the lowest bid contractor so that's [TS]

right this is what happens when it's out [TS]

there and first line of a thing right [TS]

everything's blowing up so let's see I [TS]

guess they go there at that point they [TS]

go to regular one because they beaten [TS]

con off and maybe they need to go find [TS]

out what's going on and we get some [TS]

nicer weather first there's the gym be [TS]

  careful [TS]

we will we will I love that and then [TS]

they said absolutely go over to this [TS]

empty space station and again some [TS]

almost again i want i want to say that I [TS]

mean it's star star trek movie but I [TS]

almost sense a little bit of the set the [TS]

influence of alien here in the sense [TS]

that they do try to stretch this out [TS]

words like empty space ship these long [TS]

slope and you actually see hora she's [TS]

married but she's been conveniently [TS]

they're only able to find indeterminate [TS]

life site because their scanners are [TS]

there's the scene with the mouse [TS]

yeah those are the other way I have my [TS]

notes to reminds me Ali this was two [TS]

years or three years after Alan came out [TS]

and you kept waiting for something [TS]

really got to the bone time bones turns [TS]

around and there's like eight dead [TS]

bodies hanging out which is kind of you [TS]

know Star Trek that's kind of rough [TS]

that's kind of like I I jumped the first [TS]

time I saw that yeah that was also know [TS]

as a scary it was pretty gruesome to is [TS]

there like a lowering them down [TS]

yeah i love that that hora is muted but [TS]

you see her she's still trying to hail [TS]

cuz you know whether or not she's like [TS]

  hello hello hello [TS]

and finally Kirstie Alley opens up her [TS]

computer and communicator and goes we're [TS]

fine out like shut up shut up or [TS]

business just say something about these [TS]

communicators with these like Nokia [TS]

casts off from radioshack was like big [TS]

they're conky they're ugly too thick but [TS]

they're also super wide it's like the [TS]

  gala [TS]

c-note communicator yes it's like super [TS]

wide it's a redundant circuitry and I [TS]

just went back to check this because i [TS]

have structure one and back then they [TS]

had risk communities in the first movie [TS]

they had slimmed everything down [TS]

figuring technology advanced this looks [TS]

like something that picked up at radio [TS]

shack on the way out the door their [TS]

style maybe I'm stylish my theory was [TS]

trainees you know we don't give him the [TS]

good equipment they're gonna use these [TS]

old communicators in a war surplus stuff [TS]

we got laying around from the eugenics [TS]

technology doesn't usually get bigger [TS]

but they between the original series in [TS]

this movie that the great has got a lot [TS]

bigger but i think they wanted to go [TS]

back to the whole I want to think that [TS]

they flip open and looks like the old [TS]

star trek communicators did but let's [TS]

make them bigger and clunkier yeah and [TS]

you know if this really looks like i [TS]

don't know something from like the 1950s [TS]

science movie fiction movies it was one [TS]

of those little continuity things that [TS]

just gonna bug me that in the flat that [TS]

Kirk spends the rest of the movie with [TS]

his tunic unbuttoned bugs the hell out [TS]

of me for some reason let's stay just [TS]

like that i don't know what that's their [TS]

other than show me like you know the [TS]

blood that he's still there but now I [TS]

went back and looked and he actually [TS]

unbuttons that himself on purpose yeah [TS]

he's walking across the ground shortly [TS]

  after they get shot [TS]

  yeah so it's I think it's just he's [TS]

  wearing himself out exactly [TS]

yeah and there's a lot of apparently [TS]

stuff that you can buy the Starfleet you [TS]

know what I don't know swag store [TS]

because now they have waiting jackets [TS]

that you can wear with nice buckles on [TS]

and then Kirk's where it is using the [TS]

data so you can give them to your [TS]

girlfriend when she's cold in the [TS]

Genesis kid it was like a leather jacket [TS]

uh yeah it is it's the space leather [TS]

jacket i like the Stars leather jacket [TS]

but if you if you're gonna happen long [TS]

enough you get a Letterman's jacket with [TS]

a high collar and he wears his up with [TS]

the highway to do it i'm a i-i-i gotta [TS]

love the boots got the high collar but [TS]

what is with the design of that though [TS]

that that short with that with the one [TS]

thing hanging down that I mean was this [TS]

new kids inspired or you can do several [TS]

  years later it [TS]

I know but that why you know patent [TS]

leather belt buckle up right now [TS]

Starfleet units by oshkosh b'gosh yeah [TS]

yeah it's oh in the chatroom somebody [TS]

points out that that Kirk opens his his [TS]

vest because con he's got a little chest [TS]

  out [TS]

he wants a man cleavage and in the [TS]

original Star Trek his shirts were [TS]

always ripped and fight so he's me [TS]

that's as close to season comes to [TS]

unbuckle it that the regular one seems I [TS]

mean me that the creepiness kind of [TS]

continues to because then they go to the [TS]

did the transporter room and it's left [TS]

running and abandoned and they're like [TS]

well there's some coordinates here but [TS]

well first we see checkoff back wanna [TS]

there there in the crate right they open [TS]

the crate and they're like eyes rolled [TS]

back in their heads like maybe they're [TS]

dead right we don't know what they are [TS]

but then we discovered that walter [TS]

Koenig is a really bad they put what [TS]

your shirt on audio general or deny the [TS]

creature all their value and sa lie [TS]

that's the madness that is promised by [TS]

come thing but they said they put [TS]

creatures illness and McCoys then there [TS]

may be getting a quick scale yeah [TS]

they're creatures still in oh yeah but [TS]

maybe you guys want to stay here you [TS]

want to come down with us and we we [TS]

brought the we brought the antiquated [TS]

tricorders so i will pick up later [TS]

I'm sure nothing bad can happen we let [TS]

you out of this create their creatures [TS]

  in your head [TS]

come with us so they beam down to the [TS]

empty to the empty coordinates which is [TS]

again that creepy moment of like they [TS]

bought time to get they didn't get down [TS]

this far and and and of course there's a [TS]

funny McCoy line where where I another [TS]

record suppose they win your heart you [TS]

know where well it's your best it's your [TS]

chance to get away from it all and I [TS]

don't know what if that's what you want [TS]

me to say we got nothing with this is [TS]

the only option bone so you want to stay [TS]

here with the rats no dead bodies no [TS]

okay energized and another this is a [TS]

foreshadow that i get i think they might [TS]

have overplayed a little bit if we go by [TS]

mobile look that is like I like mrs. Sam [TS]

this is the biggest problem i have with [TS]

the movie is that at a two year old [TS]

chimpanzee could figure out this [TS]

situation of genetics Superman whereas [TS]

the genetically modified brilliant con [TS]

somehow completely misses that hours and [TS]

days and was too busy focused on how [TS]

clever he is that he's he's [TS]

eavesdropping and why can all of their [TS]

  communications be encrypted [TS]

  yeah well it's a magical I couldn't stop [TS]

  it figure it out [TS]

know anyone who's watching this movie [TS]

and he's like he's not even being subtle [TS]

this is like you know when a [TS]

six-year-old is trying to tell you a [TS]

  secret [TS]

  why the book [TS]

ours will seem like minutes when yeah [TS]

you know but when I was 11 years old now [TS]

watch this movie for the first time I'm [TS]

totally missed that I was so engrossed [TS]

in other stuff i totally missed it and [TS]

so with that moment where Kurt flips his [TS]

  communicator opens giant communicator [TS]

open later was like cool [TS]

oh wow right when I was 11 so it is a [TS]

great scene and and I think the [TS]

greatness of that scene is so powerful [TS]

that you forget how lame this was when [TS]

I'm watching it now and I'm seeing him [TS]

because you can skip same by-the-book [TS]

  remember by the book [TS]

yeah but maybe he's suggesting that you [TS]

  purchased the novelization available [TS]

from penguin yes by it LOL tell you the [TS]

date of the science team if you read [TS]

them as and of course you know we know [TS]

  that regulations because sabatino's [TS]

every regulation of the book by heart [TS]

now she's broken she remembers he sees [TS]

so when they when they beam down into [TS]

the Genesis cave the the hallway that [TS]

leads to the genesis game i guess more [TS]

accurate right the the phil collins [TS]

memorial hallway then uh then uh you [TS]

know we we see that there's the betrayal [TS]

of Chekhov and and captain Tyrell they [TS]

call up con and he steals the Genesis [TS]

device and the trail kills himself and [TS]

check of yeah I don't understand why [TS]

does Terrell have to kill himself but [TS]

then the thing just jumped out of [TS]

Chekhov said well that's what jumps out [TS]

of his head it's like I'm getting the [TS]

hell out of here somebody's gonna blow [TS]

ya abandoned ship its self-presentation [TS]

yeah and it's one of them was a [TS]

disposable captain in the other one had [TS]

a feature credit so it was just you know [TS]

it goes but it kinda like that struggle [TS]

like you know where cons you're pushing [TS]

him shoot him shoot him he's like a cat [TS]

can't do it can't do I thought there was [TS]

a missing line of dialogue there that [TS]

they didn't put in which would have been [TS]

con being like point the phaser and pull [TS]

the trigger right and so what he does [TS]

what he does he turns it on himself [TS]

because he's got a fire the gun and he [TS]

doesn't want to fire it at Kirk so he he [TS]

fires it himself but then yeah and then [TS]

and then boy he did feel bad because [TS]

turns out if he had waited like I'm [TS]

another 30 seconds this thing would have [TS]

just fallen out of this year street was [TS]

just a shape also we shot the other guy [TS]

and that's yeah that because what David [TS]

did get his getting over that [TS]

self-defense though that's how the way i [TS]

figure i actually like that that's a [TS]

good theory i think i'm pretty proud of [TS]

myself for coming up with that I think [TS]

the thing really bailed his ear because [TS]

the other one got vaporized your moment [TS]

to get out of here ously maybe two feet [TS]

to his right it didn't work because he [TS]

still got some toast i'm gonna find [TS]

another year one of my one of my [TS]

absolute favorite lines comes up on you [TS]

manage to kill just about everyone else [TS]

con you bloodsucker you've managed to [TS]

kill just about everyone else but like a [TS]

poor marksman you keep missing the [TS]

target and what I really like about this [TS]

thing as a place up well against the [TS]

next scene is right he's obviously [TS]

trying to talk on and constant comm yeah [TS]

calm down I i got better I got the jet [TS]

is your advice you're not going to get [TS]

me to lose my cool i got it under [TS]

control it's about monday i was gonna [TS]

get that little areas like hey I get to [TS]

maroon you this time haha what and [TS]

walking game a couple tranquilizers [TS]

yes sit down yeah and it's like I will [TS]

  go on hurting [TS]

yeah blouses on the other pic tomorrow [TS]

at a breaking story and brandy and [TS]

silicon is calm now he's he's he's had [TS]

some drinks now when the creature [TS]

vacates check out the year and is Kirk [TS]

zaps it with the phaser which setting is [TS]

that on the phaser i seem to recall stun [TS]

and kill but this appears to be bugs out [TS]

host marshmallow or something but [TS]

example rocket yeah I'm deep-fry very [TS]

useful in finding need to cook a hot dog [TS]

yeah yeah it is a pacetti lure cook a [TS]

hot dog that's what that's what we'll do [TS]

we start 45 from the camping [TS]

yeah and you can tell by the way he has [TS]

that setting because what's on his mind [TS]

is the next thing he says was anyone got [TS]

  any food [TS]

yeah right and then the response to that [TS]

is there's food in the Genesis k which I [TS]

guarantee that's the exact same line she [TS]

used when they conceived David yeah [TS]

enough to last a lifetime and so we [TS]

finally get the big reveal don't duh [TS]

this is indeed captain kirk's a son but [TS]

it's in this moment of Kirk again we [TS]

were back to the whole I feel old stuff [TS]

with Captain Kirk right but he's got [TS]

this guy who killed him in years [TS]

the son hates me and I feel like an old [TS]

man and and she tries to cheer him up [TS]

she's like I got let me show you my my [TS]

Genesis cave which comes with its own [TS]

off-camera son that is inside and I [TS]

  don't know how [TS]

and you wonder about Starfleet's a [TS]

record keeping because they look at the [TS]

the kickstarter video yeah and McCoys [TS]

like well it doesn't work and and Chris [TS]

like I don't know the film this year but [TS]

that's not how the phase two [TS]

let's go see because blockers donate and [TS]

then forget about was not in the loop [TS]

they were still waiting to get their [TS]

money archives letter because they had [TS]

not another planet they not the dragons [TS]

and they basically just wrote it off [TS]

that you know what's never back in [TS]

another capital markets project I always [TS]

figured that it was just cooking like [TS]

yeah you know this came across my desk [TS]

  and it's Carol and I I don't wanna I [TS]

don't wanna know about it see I guess [TS]

she's doing her thing i told her i would [TS]

just leave her alone so let's see what [TS]

the other side is that she did say that [TS]

right it took them 10 months which is [TS]

almost a year to all out that cave and [TS]

then they built genesis in a day [TS]

yeah they fired off the thing and it may [TS]

decline in the day yeah yeah okay but [TS]

then we come back to the Kobayashi Maru [TS]

store because she's the person I was not [TS]

letting this guy yea he's like it's [TS]

bugging her that she can't she could [TS]

beat this and Kirk's the wall tell McCoy [TS]

is the one finally you know and let her [TS]

  in on the secret [TS]

yeah yeah this is the legendary not only [TS]

does it fit with the Kirk that we've [TS]

known from from the original series but [TS]

it becomes this you know it's something [TS]

that really stuck with people afterward [TS]

which is he he cheated he changed the [TS]

conditions reprogram the simulator and [TS]

this is something so fixed and lower [TS]

after this movie that that in the JJ [TS]

Abrams Star Trek movie they actually [TS]

show Kirk cheating on the Kobayashi Maru [TS]

test and it turns out that in that movie [TS]

  he's cheating [TS]

against Spock who is running tests which [TS]

is funny too but it's it's fun to see [TS]

how sabic who is a has sort of come to [TS]

respect kirky and she's kind of appalled [TS]

  think you're a cheater [TS]

I was like you know I change the [TS]

conditions and and David Marcus she's a [TS]

shader no I totally called him on it no [TS]

you just and then so you get the pivot [TS]

right i don't believe in the no-win [TS]

scenario Kurtis spoke with the [TS]

communicator right Curtis pocket you [TS]

ready but yep I'm ready all right let's [TS]

get out and why do you feel the need to [TS]

keep it a secret that point by the way [TS]

out drama school with you all you guys [TS]

just don't have some coffee and [TS]

restaurants current finally got a drama [TS]

I i got the secret code spot that no one [TS]

else had figured out by the book by the [TS]

  book [TS]

I don't like to lose but that is great i [TS]

don't believe in the no-win scenario and [TS]

that's that's the key moment of the [TS]

movie and really the key moment I think [TS]

of Star Trek period is the reason that [TS]

people like Star Trek is because Kirk is [TS]

  basically infallible [TS]

I mean he's more or less space Ferris [TS]

Bueller we'll figure it out you you know [TS]

he's gonna he's gonna use his superior [TS]

intellect and he's going to win out in [TS]

the end and you know [TS]

oh yeah but his actions keep coming back [TS]

to haunted in other words even when he [TS]

has the victory over the Reliant it's [TS]

not a victory i get the best he's able [TS]

to do now is a stalemate in the past [TS]

they would kick reliance but now and [TS]

then and Kirk isn't the smartest guy [TS]

he's the cleverest sky right he's not [TS]

Spock is smarter than Kirk but he [TS]

doesn't have the kind of the reckless [TS]

abandon didn't have guile eggs anything [TS]

outer just has this all-consuming [TS]

  confidence in himself [TS]

I will figure this out i can change the [TS]

rules i can get out of any situation and [TS]

these other people help me but it is all [TS]

about me and I made a note here this is [TS]

this is the point where he decides to [TS]

finally fix his lobster bib so that that [TS]

really I think maybe the whole purpose [TS]

of that is to represent his his [TS]

vulnerability I mean it at the point [TS]

that the the enterprise gets hit he [TS]

pulls the thing open and then once he's [TS]

he's got the upper hand again he closes [TS]

  it up [TS]

  he's no longer vulnerable it's a [TS]

you know what is your shields but with [TS]

that was a parallel to if you remember [TS]

in Apollo 30 when Ed Harris the very end [TS]

of the senior all hairy doing everything [TS]

like that he's wearing like a tab collar [TS]

shirt and the Yankee this is this is [TS]

going to be a disaster this guy's never [TS]

gonna make it and Harris goes I think [TS]

it's gonna be our finest hour button his [TS]

shirt and fixes his tie and that's what [TS]

it reminded me of like I'm going into [TS]

this final moment and i really love at [TS]

this point because he goes he's going on [TS]

the offensive con I'm my thing at you [TS]

and your superior intellect and he [TS]

finally manages to provoke kind of walk [TS]

inside we got Genesis that it's even [TS]

better we gotta run by it we got campus [TS]

event you'd never off the damn pilot [TS]

with the crazy worms can we please go [TS]

find something else I think cons almost [TS]

ready in that final taunt I laugh at [TS]

your superior intellect up makes fun of [TS]

  anything you want [TS]

not mine so I'll say this for me is [TS]

consistent great don't call me honey [TS]

modred as because i like spring [TS]

scoreline it's contact marty mcfly via [TS]

the other lights brings forward like [TS]

ridiculously fast senior like haha i got [TS]

them he's on the line and and your [TS]

argument to the end is like we don't [TS]

need to do this but it's too bad [TS]

honestly though it's pure overkill [TS]

because really at that point when he [TS]

realized that he was duped by the [TS]

by-the-book reduction scheme that should [TS]

have been enough to make him realize his [TS]

  superior intellect was entirely [TS]

fictional yeah right well it wasn't he [TS]

said that he is intelligent but not [TS]

experienced yes and finally like you [TS]

Kirk sage counts for something [TS]

experience counts for something that I [TS]

say this is a middle-aged guy I kind of [TS]

like you don't like that moment you know [TS]

  what [TS]

just the fact that he's been around [TS]

Federation longer than time has counts [TS]

  for something [TS]

arm and at this point the movie kind of [TS]

gets a little bit cheesy you know what [TS]

there's a convenient nebula but this one [TS]

  is there [TS]

this is this is the nebula is I remember [TS]

when I was a kid I I friend of mine gave [TS]

me a star log magazine and it said it [TS]

said star trek tues plot involves con [TS]

stealing a weather machine and trapping [TS]

the enterprise in a cloud and it turns [TS]

out that's not that far off it's sort of [TS]

like you can see the dates [TS]

somebody kind of got it wrong but the [TS]

the I think about that every time that [TS]

they go into the nebula it's like oh [TS]

here's the space cloud I i actually [TS]

remember that night and me that was like [TS]

you know it's like an apple rumor you [TS]

get part of the story right but it's not [TS]

going exactly into nebulous don't work [TS]

like that there's no like snow base [TS]

lightning and nebulous you wouldn't have [TS]

liked it if the viewscreen has static on [TS]

it why wouldn't you like go look out a [TS]

window because in the long shots in the [TS]

nebula you can find your perfect [TS]

thousands of miles but but they're like [TS]

others TV reception is bad so it's in [TS]

someone fix the rabbit ears on the TV [TS]

set because it wouldn't because we're a [TS]

submarine battle moment and they want to [TS]

have it be that Khan and I like this [TS]

part of it is like conscious thinking [TS]

like he's in a ship on the ocean and in [TS]

the end that's his 20th century sent [TS]

thinking is one idiot is two-dimensional [TS]

think emotional right he thinks [TS]

two-dimensional a-and and this is sort [TS]

of where you know comes back but it's [TS]

like just even if they're going to the [TS]

nebula like he goes all they're going in [TS]

there and he goes you know let's try and [TS]

discourage them from doing that like [TS]

watches blow them to hang out at his [TS]

page on idea i don't instead and then [TS]

he's like Peters just trying to [TS]

discourage us from going into you know [TS]

just shoot them you want to kill her [TS]

the spaceship the family the people [TS]

you're not the warning shot goes [TS]

straight to the destruction shot ya know [TS]

that that kind of whole thing was a [TS]

little bit illogical to me but you're [TS]

right i did like this seems though in [TS]

there where they are looking like [TS]

capital ships where no ones on top and [TS]

the other one sort of on the bottom we [TS]

don't see each other it is like that [TS]

that submarine Jace and that's that's [TS]

the part that I thought was very [TS]

scooby-doo like it was a draw it was [TS]

like it all along the hallway and you [TS]

know that the shaggy and scooby running [TS]

the in the front across the two doors [TS]

right in the background this the snow [TS]

ghost friends bass going the other way [TS]

  at the very [TS]

I'll it's that yeah we're going to open [TS]

up up a little bit of aggression here [TS]

yeah but that you know the point from a [TS]

structural standpoint is to once again [TS]

have it be like Kirk you know Kirk knows [TS]

some facts that Khan doesn't really [TS]

think of and that's that's what get some [TS]

Kirk's experience gets him the win [TS]

except it turns out that the that i [TS]

actually wrote in my notes after they [TS]

after they knock than the engine off the [TS]

Reliant i wrote game over which made me [TS]

laugh when Conn immediately says no Kirk [TS]

the game's not and at this point Khan [TS]

has lost it right now walking this that [TS]

if he ever had everybody you know right [TS]

the personal he's lifted up that piece [TS]

of styrofoam off opponents show his [TS]

superhuman strength steels are dead [TS]

yeah right it's just been a bad at a [TS]

  more calm [TS]

I like that kind of visibly woozy check [TS]

off stumbles onto the bridge and say [TS]

immediately put him in charge of the [TS]

weapons cuts which which is a good idea [TS]

that they're being they're just [TS]

patronizing the weapons console is a [TS]

joystick with a button that says press [TS]

to fire the torpedo that's all it is [TS]

  it's actually a lite-brite Boing go [TS]

everything videogame doing a great job [TS]

just to get a cover [TS]

okay okay buddy let's play space [TS]

invaders for the next 15 minutes you [TS]

  know [TS]

will will will forgive you all the [TS]

deception in the worm in the ear [TS]

good job time really getting mascara got [TS]

a whole not not letting anyone know [TS]

about I'm push the white where your ship [TS]

  and white button that [TS]

yeah you just push that one about it [TS]

  again [TS]

alright champ good luck somebody check [TS]

  out fire fire fire [TS]

so looking you get to press the buttons [TS]

president like you're on fire [TS]

oh do would be to say lies or two things [TS]

no that's the button check off so the [TS]

Genesis torpedo gets activated this is [TS]

this is constable revenge is currently [TS]

to have a very strange kind of detonator [TS]

device I don't know the [TS]

a lot of circles you have to push down [TS]

it's kind of strange it reminded me of [TS]

like the you know two keys to launch the [TS]

nuclear missiles kind of thing and it's [TS]

like you got only one you gotta twist of [TS]

thing and then the thing goes down and [TS]

then you twist another thing and it goes [TS]

down and it's like Carol how much of the [TS]

Kickstarter money went toward the [TS]

bizarre launch manage the aluminum then [TS]

it was that the guy that that's also not [TS]

from alien actually that the whole self [TS]

destruction alien is very similar to [TS]

  that right and it's a it's a cool it's [TS]

cool moment where you know you see when [TS]

you watch it back you see that were we [TS]

need warp speed three minutes or we're [TS]

all dead and you see Spock and it camera [TS]

hold on Spock and he he thinks and you [TS]

know when you watch it back especially [TS]

it's like this is his decision it's like [TS]

I gotta go down there and he goes down [TS]

there and and sacrifices himself [TS]

this is obi Oshie me exactly right and [TS]

and and and he can't cheat but he does [TS]

kind of well also so they wrote they [TS]

they added in after leonard nimoy said i [TS]

wanna i want you to kill off Spock why [TS]

he said that I don't know [TS]

so uh so he was tired of it so but they [TS]

wrote in he was having such a good time [TS]

doing the movie that he started to waver [TS]

so they wrote in this thing where you [TS]

guys remember 222 dr. McCoy before he [TS]

goes into the chamber us and just in [TS]

  case [TS]

yeah you are a little back to know might [TS]

might might want to do an addition on [TS]

the house and then you my family you [TS]

  know [TS]

alright i love the moment but you want [TS]

more i love the moment we're up so he's [TS]

in there and Scotty is has gotten up and [TS]

even though he's not you know he's [TS]

collapsing all that it and you get the [TS]

sense that when Scott Lewis box in there [TS]

Scotty's like you gotta come back out [TS]

like he might be sickened by this but [TS]

it's he could still survive and then he [TS]

takes the like the lid off the engine [TS]

thing and scott is like no [TS]

that's the most like he's dead that's it [TS]

he's gone yeah it's not lookin real good [TS]

but you know it is what i really like [TS]

you put the gloves on first because we [TS]

want to be sanitary about this yeah a [TS]

  clean room please [TS]

you know his parents always said you [TS]

know the little per hour before you go [TS]

into a warp core reactor it it's never [TS]

clear exactly what he does but he does [TS]

she keep fixing something special down [TS]

underneath the little lid of the thing [TS]

and maybe we have the gloves his hands [TS]

was just like burned off so he has the [TS]

  gloves she absorbs radiation [TS]

speaking of gloves i meant to bring this [TS]

up earlier but can anyone explain y con [TS]

keeps one on at all times he takes one [TS]

off right at the very beginning right [TS]

and then that's it and I I yeah I kept [TS]

on wondering like does he have like [TS]

metals and really Michael Jackson [TS]

reference serve when he took he took one [TS]

glove off but then he became so obsessed [TS]

with Kirk that he forgot videos [TS]

forgotten the whole movie it's a sign of [TS]

his madness remember on has gone into [TS]

space 1996 which would have been right [TS]

about the time of of Michael Jackson's [TS]

geek of thing that's where the whole [TS]

club thing came from and it was a little [TS]

oh gosh what Michael Jackson may have [TS]

been a commander in the eugenics wars I [TS]

like at this point where where they tell [TS]

Sulu soon will get us out of here best [TS]

possible speed and Sulu proceed to make [TS]

the world's slowest three-point turn [TS]

yeah to back away from the hot you're [TS]

not giving any good you really have to [TS]

tell sue best possible oh you I was [TS]

going to save gas and running i was [TS]

going to happen pulse but I alternative [TS]

  as possible right [TS]

Sulu you killed us all Sulu damn you [TS]

it is kind of sad that so and who are [TS]

basically serve the same purpose that [TS]

they served in the show which is [TS]

absolutely they in any Star Trek movies [TS]

to come they found plot beats for all of [TS]

the ensemble this movie all over it does [TS]

is repeat herself again and again until [TS]

Kirstie Alley tells her to shut up and [TS]

and also Lou has really are his little [TS]

one-liners like we're not going to make [TS]

it our way and that's about it [TS]

Sulu though in this movie he serves as a [TS]

surrogate for the audience in that he's [TS]

damn glad to be there [TS]

he's just going like an idiot the whole [TS]

  time and he [TS]

pleased as punch to be on board the [TS]

enterprise for whatever reason but he's [TS]

got nothing to do i would give a crisp [TS]

andhra dollar bill two Georges decay [TS]

just to hear him say soft Corinthian [TS]

  leather [TS]

he might he might be available check is [TS]

a check is kickstarter surely there's a [TS]

con somewhere that he's appearing every [TS]

hon yeah the UH so the enterprise so the [TS]

enterprise gets away if they get away [TS]

know something happens and then captain [TS]

everything's working Jimmy better get [TS]

down here and like once again Kirk [TS]

pulled off America a lot no consequences [TS]

friend everybody's fine the crew what [TS]

happens when you get that other world [TS]

there are ramifications gym you may want [TS]

to get down here right away i'm not [TS]

going to tell you what kinda empty [TS]

Jerrica they cut to the engineer one who [TS]

has a trusted loyal first officer and [TS]

has long friend raise your hands Jim [TS]

knots go past the biggest so so and then [TS]

comes the big good the big goodbye [TS]

this scene is is pretty fantastic i have [TS]

to say though as an on track guide that [TS]

the particularly the early parts of it [TS]

where we see Spock being weak and [TS]

disoriented and it's silent which is [TS]

just a brilliant move to have him be [TS]

separated by the by the thick glass or [TS]

whatever it is and and he's stumbling [TS]

about any it's it's not clear whether [TS]

you can see and it's it's really [TS]

  heartbreaking [TS]

I mean even if somebody who's only [TS]

dabbled in Star Trek minorly it's it [TS]

brought ear he's blind and burned his [TS]

you-know-what call me though and i only [TS]

noticed it for the first time last night [TS]

they cut the net see spots in the corner [TS]

you can barely get up and gets up and [TS]

what does he do he fixes his goals down [TS]

his uniform yes yes it's touching [TS]

I saw the exact and it got some dignity [TS]

no matter what I I'm dead but my [TS]

captain's here i'm going to present [TS]

myself friday happy I'm gonna walk into [TS]

walls i'm gonna make sure that no [TS]

creases in my generation I don't walk [TS]

around with my shirt open half the time [TS]

I some people jerks and that's me just [TS]

showed how great my dream I was that [TS]

little detail i had to be a pilot but [TS]

that's what Spock would have done [TS]

yeah that's good right little moment i [TS]

like i like the like Scotty's he's dead [TS]

  already [TS]

yeah it's like it's like no he died I [TS]

gotta go save him know it's too late [TS]

it's too late and change the rules on [TS]

  this one [TS]

there's nothing left for spot but a [TS]

torpedo coffin that we will shoot in [TS]

explaining a mark 6 torpedo coffee [TS]

incidentally because you didn't catch [TS]

the gigantic leather recliner a hot and [TS]

it's very tasty little marks and we saw [TS]

the top of the spacecraft which is very [TS]

ponderously lowered because it turns out [TS]

that the Dozen taking that you don't [TS]

need to rush when you're shooting [TS]

torpedo it starts to just take your time [TS]

just lower it very slowly the mark the [TS]

mark five used to really drool their way [TS]

out of the the launch Bay [TS]

mark mark sixes are the only ones that r [TS]

is true for the regulations are the only [TS]

ones that are allowed to come to carry [TS]

  uh [TS]

Vogons as a payload yeah it was it [TS]

wasn't until the mark 7 that they [TS]

realize you should probably put the [TS]

writing on the bottom of the coffin so [TS]

it's doesn't really ruin the ceremony as [TS]

they're watching you out of the torpedo [TS]

Bay yes and what exactly did they do [TS]

that as opposed to taking his body back [TS]

  to his family [TS]

I just never quite got that I think [TS]

McCoy suggested with spots like I guess [TS]

very much space but never made sense for [TS]

Kirk what's popular family and because [TS]

he his was the most human yes you know [TS]

it's because McCoy said I've got some [TS]

strange for some strange reason I'm [TS]

hearings box-boy saying to fire him into [TS]

the newly generated plan tonight I don't [TS]

I remember some time but i'm not sure [TS]

whether it so how many I mean it's so [TS]

funny when you look back on this that [TS]

and this is skipping ahead a little bit [TS]

but not only do we have to remember [TS]

thing I and the last line is it you know [TS]

that there's the whole thing with the [TS]

all is well which is like come on is all [TS]

well Spock died right but but we're ok [TS]

we're going what really makes me that [TS]

should have been looking at that thing [TS]

we're all happy little me feel young [TS]

not really Chloe looks like looks at the [TS]

camera and says he's not really dead as [TS]

long as we remember him here by the book [TS]

he's not really dead must come back to [TS]

this place one day soon is and don't rip [TS]

your fake Vulcan ears off in a horror [TS]

come back for star trek 3 we promise [TS]

  it'll it'll be good i mean there's [TS]

there's something that there's some nice [TS]

stuff here at the end but I mean that [TS]

that as we wind out of the conclusion [TS]

with Scotty gets to play the bagpipes [TS]

isn't that nice glad he brings uh we [TS]

have a nice shot of the New Genesis [TS]

planet which has a son that its orbiting [TS]

and again I don't know where the Sun [TS]

came from Commodore before we get down [TS]

to this point i wanted to point out one [TS]

more thing we are going from the death [TS]

seemed to yeah there's there's the bit [TS]

where he's saying his final goodbyes to [TS]

Kirk through the through the universe [TS]

the glass here and he's wearing the big [TS]

  gloves [TS]

transparent aluminum yeah take them off [TS]

right but it's so fast he whips that [TS]

glove off so fast so we can pull his [TS]

live long and prosper up against the [TS]

glass watch the scene again you'll see [TS]

  in water [TS]

one moment he's got the glove on and it [TS]

drops below frame and within [TS]

microseconds it's often that hand is on [TS]

  the glass [TS]

it's amazing he news with Spock knew he [TS]

was going to die very soon so we need to [TS]

get his hand up fast [TS]

  I think there's a little a whole subtext [TS]

here about gloves though in this film [TS]

not sure what it is you know but I did [TS]

like the line where he said that I never [TS]

took the Kobayashi Maru out what do you [TS]

  think of my solution [TS]

you know I had it so I took some [TS]

consequences for my actions but yeah [TS]

unlike you who frankly was because of [TS]

this whole mess and my death I might add [TS]

thank you very much oh and live longer [TS]

process and drop car off at Starbase [TS]

five we could have done that but [TS]

no no no no green program the parameters [TS]

of the seeds for a future culture that [TS]

will spring and the worship me as a god [TS]

probably is the great Kirk who delivered [TS]

of their whatever let's just leave it [TS]

messy was you had to teach him a lesson [TS]

because of your superior intellect you [TS]

were kind of annoyed that he tried to [TS]

kill you so you moved into my planet [TS]

know perfectly within the prime [TS]

directive what thanks to spot get [TS]

  torpedo coffin [TS]

yeah and you know they didn't check for [TS]

existing biomatter before they dumped a [TS]

  con on that planet [TS]

yeah they just dumped him yeah exactly [TS]

didn't try to transplant anything [TS]

Kurt there was also no sign of a planet [TS]

there at all doing were there any I [TS]

proto matter particles like was going to [TS]

be a problem for Lucius the nebula I [TS]

think they use the yeah it's really fun [TS]

and it sucked in the nebula and created [TS]

the planet is brains yeah and then why [TS]

didn't they just do that instead of [TS]

looking for a life was planet with no my [TS]

crew because nebula weather systems are [TS]

unpredictable so you from home what's [TS]

gonna happen yeah this is what happens [TS]

when you back the kickstarter project [TS]

from someone with no track records and I [TS]

don't work someone you can put together [TS]

you know what they can do a photoshop [TS]

render and people are throwing money [TS]

Adam I oh and I should mention that that [TS]

that Captain Kirk gets a hug gets to hug [TS]

his son at the end you get the world's [TS]

  most awkward hug too [TS]

it doesn't i like that it was very [TS]

awkward hug the little pat i think Kirk [TS]

just noticed the perm at that moment in [TS]

time and he think he's thinking to [TS]

himself is this really my style [TS]

he's tall and blonde he also probably [TS]

sees the the cardigan he's got tied [TS]

around his neck and he's trying to [TS]

figure out whether we should hug mercy [TS]

for slapping silly fight for his party [TS]

was on his way to play tennis before [TS]

it's right up there are even in the 23rd [TS]

century you don't like red [TS]

yeah at Genesis tennis and I was ya [TS]

genesis genesis genesis genesis its [TS]

trail assistance but I did like the one [TS]

seen even though it was a cameras over [TS]

the head to go see you never faced [TS]

  before [TS]

no one's ever accused kill people I'm [TS]

you maroon them on planets but you've [TS]

never had anyone die around you have you [TS]

anyone who matters and this is sort of [TS]

like a little bit human and also that [TS]

idea was of course I know I'm adopted [TS]

  you idiots [TS]

  but yeah here's a here's your message i [TS]

haven't faced death there you go haha [TS]

theme that's the theme of this movie [TS]

yeah but he doesn't he's pretty happy at [TS]

the end though yeah all is well now it's [TS]

more of the midlife crisis stuff ma'am [TS]

he's faced death and now he feels you're [TS]

like wow this is this crisis is over I [TS]

feel great Spock's dead i feel young [TS]

let's go is awesome it was that it was [TS]

that Vulcan that was dragging me down [TS]

making me feel so freaking old I'm glad [TS]

he's God find me books what prozac was a [TS]

waste of money i don't need these [TS]

glasses anymore on that logic crap all [TS]

  the time [TS]

screw logic let's go find some triple [TS]

breast green chicks let's go [TS]

I should have shot spotter planet ages [TS]

  ago [TS]

you know what I'm gonna come back here [TS]

one day but right now we find a bar girl [TS]

needs some Romulan ale i gotta-i gotta [TS]

feed my job this will pick up Spock's [TS]

  body later right now [TS]

Starbase eight let's get this brace for [TS]

everyone on base eight the bart sorbet [TS]

say let's swing by Babylon 5 and pick up [TS]

some cock Marat sure because that whole [TS]

would feel young feel you what young and [TS]

something Spock was trying to tell me on [TS]

  my birthday [TS]

now you got the message ya see it was [TS]

the worst of times when Spock died that [TS]

it was the best of times when he [TS]

realized that he felt young sure the [TS]

best of times like stock is no longer [TS]

painted my uh oh say Kurt is a very [TS]

selfish is like Spock is dead but I feel [TS]

  great [TS]

that's right everybody is great you [TS]

don't want you know what right people [TS]

have died the ship is wracked with I'm I [TS]

snapped out of that midlife crisis here [TS]

we go by mwr some I don't mind the [TS]

glasses so much now that that dude is [TS]

  dead [TS]

yeah but he cracked his classes oh [TS]

that's right yeah I know I know but [TS]

he'll have to sell them instructor for [TS]

so so uh before we go I want it I wanted [TS]

to talk about p.m. some of the [TS]

ramifications of of a later movies [TS]

especially of surgery 32 this because i [TS]

feel like in some ways star trek 3 kind [TS]

of ruins the same movie [TS]

hey ya know each other's let's fire is [TS]

  over [TS]

four star trek through the search for [TS]

spock fired fired off for me because I [TS]

  haven't seen it [TS]

spoiler alert they find Spock they find [TS]

their there there's one scene in that [TS]

that absolutely kills me when they're on [TS]

the Genesis planet and the Klingons are [TS]

behind them and again another in depth [TS]

captain and you're just going oh [TS]

Klingon battlecruiser d close behind you [TS]

want to throw up the shields [TS]

nope no you learn nothing would do it so [TS]

starkly here's the things that ruin I I [TS]

don't want to get into starts at three [TS]

but but like my criticism actually alien [TS]

3 where the first scene of alien 3 they [TS]

wake up Ripley and they say oh yeah that [TS]

girl that you saved in the first in the [TS]

  last movie she's dead [TS]

everyone's dead so it sorry it was [TS]

  totally invalidates everything that [TS]

happened in your previous movie let's [TS]

start our new movie which is a big help [TS]

to have any attachment to those guys [TS]

yeah the middle finger to the audience [TS]

so in star trek 3 what let's see what [TS]

  happens [TS]

they bring back Spock so the sacrifice [TS]

here I mean it's nice to have spot back [TS]

he was in a bunch of other movies he was [TS]

even in the new star trek movie but he's [TS]

brought back which lessens his sacrifice [TS]

a little bit the Genesis device turns [TS]

out to be kind of a a scientific fraud [TS]

where they used like unstable proto [TS]

matter instead of so supersoft on your [TS]

own matric Carol mark oue the new Star [TS]

  illegal rodeo matter [TS]

well we could we wanted to get funds and [TS]

Carol and her team are turning out to be [TS]

kind of frauds David gets like stabbed [TS]

in the back by a Klingon so Kirk son [TS]

that he's met and had a understanding [TS]

with now is is just dead and worst of [TS]

all is that a sonic becomes a really [TS]

awful actress it's true it's very [TS]

strange but I think David getting killed [TS]

is important because it sets of Star [TS]

Trek 6i guess it from wearing future [TS]

  cardigans [TS]

yeah true I i think it's unfortunate [TS]

that they kill them off before they can [TS]

really be more kind of like a [TS]

interaction with with Kirk it does make [TS]

you wonder what the point of that whole [TS]

David thing was it's used later just [TS]

like spot comes back might my wife was [TS]

saying today that she prefers to think [TS]

that that a spot died and then he came [TS]

back and save the whales and what [TS]

  happened between men [TS]

  I don't know he's back [TS]

yeah there we go back there was a lot of [TS]

star trek 3 where I felt the unraveled [TS]

everything that they built up in the [TS]

second movie yeah and although i don't [TS]

hate star trek 3 is a movie I I feel [TS]

like it backtracked on many of the [TS]

important things in star trek to and I [TS]

would rather you know sort of think of [TS]

star trek to as as the as it is and not [TS]

about like all the things that they kind [TS]

of backup because I don't want to think [TS]

looking at the science team and the [TS]

Genesis device that well it turns out it [TS]

was all scientific fraud this whole [TS]

thing was for nothing and now it's just [TS]

a weapon and you know it was all just [TS]

like really irresponsible and bad things [TS]

and you know what was a weapon and by [TS]

the way you know David Marcus was [TS]

irresponsible on its worst part is going [TS]

to have to use midi-chlorians in the [TS]

yeah in the rocket mix mix in the [TS]

medical reasons and so the other thing i [TS]

want to mention before we go is the [TS]

impact on future star trek's I feel like [TS]

structure to is a little bit like [TS]

Goldfinger was with James Bond movies [TS]

which is it was so successful in so many [TS]

ways that everything it almost every [TS]

further movie in the series sort of [TS]

tries to be this one like Goldfinger if [TS]

you lie i've seen all the bond movies [TS]

and it you know the first to bond movies [TS]

are not at all really like gold finger [TS]

and then Goldfinger's its broader and [TS]

it's got a really wacky villain and you [TS]

know and and and yeah and gadgets cars [TS]

you have three further bond movie is [TS]

sort of like trying to be Goldfinger to [TS]

the template and star trek to you know [TS]

not every star trek movie but many Star [TS]

Trek movies to come our template today [TS]

on star trek to including the JJ premise [TS]

movie which you know has its not Stu and [TS]

I I feel like it's interesting that this [TS]

is the movie that became definitive and [TS]

every you know every star trek movie [TS]

afterward owes a huge amount to what was [TS]

defined in this movie which is funny [TS]

because it's not the first movie the [TS]

first movie they just kind of like [TS]

Michael said at the beginning just look [TS]

back you know whatever but uh but this [TS]

one keeps coming black like Star Trek [TS]

six is almost like a replay of star trek [TS]

to and a couple of this next-generation [TS]

movies feel very much like Star Trek to [TS]

and the JJ Abrams feels a lot like Star [TS]

Trek to so I feel like you know and [TS]

that's not a bad thing [TS]

I think it's just interesting that this [TS]

just like with Goldfinger it's almost [TS]

like ah that let's do that again that [TS]

  was good that worked [TS]

this is where we rebooted the franchise [TS]

and this is where we started making [TS]

money and we're just going to keep [TS]

trying to make that movie over and over [TS]

again it is it there was also a curse of [TS]

the even-numbered movies being much [TS]

better than the odd-numbered movies like [TS]

13 and five as opposed to 24 yes [TS]

oh yeah this is also the moment of like [TS]

oh this is how you do a movie about TV [TS]

characters like I got it [TS]

we figured after that because if the [TS]

successful star trek movies focus on the [TS]

relationships between the the characters [TS]

right so that's why the I think got this [TS]

for instructor they figured that out the [TS]

star trek it was kind of very clinical [TS]

and coal right and there's a weird [TS]

satellite thing yeah like who spoke has [TS]

lost his emotions all chick and nobody [TS]

knows what's going on with the weird [TS]

balch eight eight hours long [TS]

oh one other thing i have on my little [TS]

list is is and it's funny because you [TS]

mentioned the bulb the bulb lady [TS]

i Leah from Star Trek the motion picture [TS]

i wanted to mention again kirstie alley [TS]

as slovak because I think this is [TS]

probably the most effective new [TS]

character introduced to the ensemble at [TS]

any point in the original Star Trek I [TS]

think I think it's a great character and [TS]

I think that Kirstie Alley's performance [TS]

is good and it's kind of a shame that I [TS]

mean I joked about it they replace her [TS]

with Robin Curtis I guess she didn't [TS]

wanted to come back there was a salary [TS]

dispute or something and Robin Curtis [TS]

instructor is terrible and then we never [TS]

see sonic again because it was a huge [TS]

mistake and and it's kind of too bad in [TS]

the sense that that that that character [TS]

works really well and she feels like [TS]

she's kind of part of the ensemble in a [TS]

way that I don't think other characters [TS]

did and I think they tried to bring her [TS]

back in Star Trek 6 i'm assuming that [TS]

the character that ends up game played [TS]

by Kim control capture it's the same [TS]

caster this road here they couldn't hold [TS]

the pickle to Darren trick ya anymore [TS]

they don't have anything sound nice avex [TS]

we have so that's really smart [TS]

it's smart that far into the star trek [TS]

mythos to bring on a character who [TS]

doesn't really know the ropes so that as [TS]

you bring new people on particularly [TS]

  with with the [TS]

movie bringing new people into the [TS]

franchise to have somebody that can ask [TS]

silly questions and bring up regulations [TS]

that the track he's already knew by [TS]

heart right was was pretty general order [TS]

a team of course and it's one also to [TS]

act as a foil for people who didn't grow [TS]

up with the series to you know service [TS]

the ass position exactly but i also like [TS]

to see there is one scene in there which [TS]

he quotes the General Order and it's not [TS]

correct that tells you to shop it's [TS]

  pakka [TS]

it's like he knows he knows that he [TS]

knows nao and the Admirals familiar with [TS]

the orders why you insolent little bit [TS]

you don't have parents familiar with [TS]

them enough to know that order 15 does [TS]

not exist yeah exactly right that you [TS]

just quoting orders and locking that bar [TS]

right after the horse leaves but she's [TS]

great she's great in this and it's just [TS]

kind of a shame that this is this is [TS]

that was her first role introducing [TS]

Christian you and she did a good job [TS]

it's sort of sad that but it's it's it's [TS]

great in this movie so it's also a [TS]

little creepy sex in the city and you [TS]

see you know it's in Belarus yes can [TS]

control yeah yeah that's true only [TS]

reading wikipedia tells me that that [TS]

character was supposed to be 7i think [TS]
