The Incomparable

88: Skywalker`s Eleven

today digital digital blue internet did [TS]

a did you do did to do [TS]

yeah that was really bad [TS]

the Intolerable podcast number 88 april [TS]

  twenty well [TS]

welcome back everyone to the [TS]

incomparable i am your host Jason snow [TS]

and we are here tonight to kick off the [TS]

third in our trilogy of podcasts about [TS]

the original Star Wars trilogy we [TS]

started a long time ago feels like a [TS]

year ago with the original star wars and [TS]

then we followed it up in the fall with [TS]

the Empire Strikes Back and we're back [TS]

here in the spring just as just as the [TS]

seasons change so too does our target we [TS]

move on to return of the jedi target [TS]

return of the jedi the third in the [TS]

original Star Wars trilogy I remember [TS]

quite well the wait for this movie [TS]

between the dip the weight between the [TS]

Empire Strikes Back and Return of the [TS]

Jedi so painful i remember sitting [TS]

doodling on my paper in eighth grade [TS]

you know imagining Star Wars things as [TS]

we waited for for for the the summer [TS]

when Return of the Jedi would come out [TS]

and we could actually see the resolution [TS]

of the story of the the Star Wars saga [TS]

which which for me for people of my age [TS]

you know this was a story that that [TS]

spanned really our childhood and we had [TS]

to wait wait don't like those [TS]

whippersnappers have got to watch it all [TS]

at once i'm joined today by [TS]

whippersnappers by the way again i am [TS]

jason hall hosted the incomparable i [TS]

have with me some returning Star Wars [TS]

commentators Dan Morgan is here hello [TS]

Dan adjacent to point out which aisle [TS]

which I'll mention later I saw this in [TS]

  the theater [TS]

good job good job we will what we like [TS]

outside of your mother's womb [TS]

yeah i was i was five alright i think it [TS]

was the real was rereleased a home ok [TS]

well that's the way I was alive when it [TS]

  came out yeah yeah [TS]

also joining me a serenity caldwell who [TS]

probably saw the re-release when it came [TS]

out in 1999 seven and yes haha yes thank [TS]

you for being here together again huh [TS]

it is here we do it we're doing this [TS]

again this is it right there won't be [TS]

any more of these right said I'm a [TS]

  little tearful about that [TS]

yeah wouldn't miss is they certainly [TS]

weren't any other movies will loop back [TS]

  around and do [TS]

start all over yours again yeah exactly [TS]

miss and of course a comment about star [TS]

wars would not be complete without with [TS]

the exception of dan moore and I guess [TS]

the the other sorry rain but the the one [TS]

of the two people I know who loves Star [TS]

Wars the most John siracusa hi John [TS]

hello Jason it's good to have you have [TS]

you back for part 3 [TS]

wouldn't miss it or actually when we [TS]

when we reach the half point halfway [TS]

point today I believe we will enter [TS]

episode 6 of our six episodes about Star [TS]

Wars so that works that is fitting yes [TS]

I'll to fitting so we're gonna take this [TS]

chronologically as you may have gathered [TS]

there but fear was nineteen eighty-three [TS]

it was nineteen eighty-three so I guess [TS]

what i said it was eighth grade I was [TS]

wrong with seventh grade when I was [TS]

doodling in my notebook daydreaming [TS]

about Star Wars well yeah so here's the [TS]

weird thing it was rereleased in [TS]

theaters in 85 I believe because that I [TS]

have this argument with my parents [TS]

because I Drive I have a very vivid [TS]

memory of being picked up by my mother [TS]

  at preschool [TS]

I wasn't even in kindergarten yet and [TS]

being like super sight to go to get to [TS]

go see you return the Jedi because they [TS]

adjust I like I thought he had just come [TS]

out but frankly I just five so I I don't [TS]

think I really knew what was going on [TS]

but they insist that I you know I knew [TS]

for years I came out in 83 so i must [TS]

been three years old no no we would not [TS]

take you to that movie at three years [TS]

old does like I remember it so i looked [TS]

it up at some point i think it was [TS]

re-released in theaters in 1985 because [TS]

they used to do that [TS]

yeah actually a day before home video [TS]

  really took root [TS]

they absolutely did that but I did see [TS]

it i actually saw it I as a [TS]

seventh-grader I got to the theater long [TS]

line it up the front they say well it's [TS]

almost sold out there's probably like a [TS]

couple of seats but they're they're [TS]

really bad as you do you want to do you [TS]

want to watch it that way [TS]

of course I want to watch are you [TS]

kidding all of my kind of study did not [TS]

carrying about Star Wars so much because [TS]

I like to start tracking all that by the [TS]

time returned to the Jedi came out it [TS]

was out the window it's like no I will [TS]

sit and i did in the front row [TS]

in the far right corner and seat and so [TS]

when when when the climactic moment of [TS]

this all these years of buildup of my [TS]

childhood came my neck hurts so bad [TS]

feeling care jason i didn't know where [TS]

it was so skewed on that giant screen [TS]

I'm all the way in the corner and all [TS]

that but it didn't matter [TS]

no you're right it didn't matter up so [TS]

does anybody and i'm looking at John [TS]

when I say this have any opening remarks [TS]

that they would like to share with us [TS]

before we move into our chronological [TS]

stepping through return of the jedi I do [TS]

have a brief brief opening statement [TS]

  I'll allow it [TS]

have a few very specific things today [TS]

barbage excellent so here we are [TS]

return of the jedi the beginning of the [TS]

  end [TS]

in hindsight all the signs were there we [TS]

know this now because we live here in [TS]

the future and 2012 all the signs of the [TS]

George Lucas that we would come to know [TS]

in the new millennium are in this movie [TS]

so you you are a proponent of the theory [TS]

that that in some ways the that return [TS]

of the jedi points the way to the [TS]

prequels and yet and the axles yeah yeah [TS]

and yet this movie does many many things [TS]

well including the most important thing [TS]

it has to do which is provide a [TS]

satisfying and to the series which as we [TS]

know contains only three movies [TS]

yes and it also has what i think is one [TS]

of the boldest messages of any action [TS]

adventure trilogy and it conveys that [TS]

message successfully and I'm sure we [TS]

will discuss this as the movie continues [TS]

that is my name's David nice setup there [TS]

are you creating some drama we know that [TS]

this podcast will have an end and it [TS]

will probably be satisfying because it's [TS]

the uncomfortable or our turnout but we [TS]

are we're creating some dramatic tension [TS]

  to lead us through [TS]

I think that's excellent work you [TS]

learned from the Masters alright so [TS]

return of the jedi it uh it starts with [TS]

credits yeah okay and I just a few care [TS]

to read the opening school first [TS]

I know it involves Luke returning to [TS]

Tatooine actually it its it's funny the [TS]

my son is a is an avid reader and yet [TS]

when we watch this movie this weekend [TS]

he completely ignored the the scroll I [TS]

think it's too much work to look at the [TS]

slanting lines as you read it but it [TS]

does hurt the eyes a little bit but it's [TS]

a way for George Lucas and his and his [TS]

team of people to to basically say yeah [TS]

this stuff happened I we're not gonna [TS]

show it to you it's like suffice to say [TS]

they're building a new Death Star [TS]

I mean is that that's essentially what [TS]

it is it's fine i wish i mean we see in [TS]

the opening shot anyways yeah right [TS]

where but we're about to show it to you [TS]

I'll be honest empires credits i [TS]

  remember fairly well [TS]

Star Wars credits are fairly iconic but [TS]

the this open and crawl i can never [TS]

focus on for more than five seconds I'm [TS]

  like yeah the movie [TS]

ok let's get to the movie yeah we want [TS]

to find out what happened to hunt solo [TS]

saber gnite words words words the [TS]

outrider at where is he [TS]

and then instead of that what we get is [TS]

the death star under construction [TS]

completing get our are third in you know [TS]

every opening sequence begins with a [TS]

star destroyer essentially type and down [TS]

to a planet and the Star Destroyer right [TS]

while pants down and there's a estar and [TS]

then the star destroyer coming over as [TS]

like it doesn't it's just sort of a [TS]

throwback to us the first Star Wars yeah [TS]

I love that moment of sickness the the [TS]

death star again because that was the [TS]

for me that was one of those unexpected [TS]

things like wow that going all the way [TS]

back there building we're building [TS]

another Death Star we're gonna notice [TS]

that they must have started it like when [TS]

the first one was already done though [TS]

right yeah like it's a little bit a few [TS]

years since the building one would build [TS]

two for twice the price [TS]

exactly right and and although in most [TS]

upscale you know but it looks you know [TS]

it's it's only partially constructed [TS]

it's probably not fully operational [TS]

it looks much cooler doesn't everyone [TS]

think it looks me air than the athlete [TS]

and one the completed ones like it's [TS]

kind of a big golf tennis with all the [TS]

great the imperfections of it i think [TS]

make it that much more intriguing and it [TS]

gives its scale because when it's when [TS]

it's featureless in a giant sphere you [TS]

can imagine it being smaller than it is [TS]

but the tiny cracks in this thing makes [TS]

you think it looks larger I'm a big i [TS]

love the the incomplete tests are [TS]

there's a shot later on which will get [TS]

to what that actually that i love [TS]

because it tries to put the death star [TS]

in in size perspective with the the moon [TS]

that its orbiting around but [TS]

so in this opening scene Darth Vader [TS]

arrives on this constructed Death Star [TS]

to talk to the the gentleman who's in [TS]

charge of building it and I was [TS]

immediately struck by what kind of a [TS]

manager the Emperor is the guy seems to [TS]

talk a good game is like oh no we're on [TS]

  track [TS]

we're doing great star we're gonna make [TS]

it we're going to get all our schedules [TS]

and and and Arthur's like rent but [TS]

directors writers like yeah whatever [TS]

doesn't share your enthusiasm I so I'm [TS]

here to basically kick you in the shins [TS]

and make sure that you do your job so I [TS]

so immediately my thought is wow that [TS]

Emperor he's a jerk he's a player of the [TS]

Darth Vader's like the one the one my [TS]

capable guy in the Empire and he's doing [TS]

his job is to like get around like [TS]

yellow people until they actually do [TS]

their job is the fixer [TS]

yeah yes is the Emperor's fixer i love [TS]

also I I could not believe that that [TS]

this was the first time I sort of [TS]

thought about the fact that in that [TS]

first shot the shuttle comes out of the [TS]

Star Destroyer slinging things down is [TS]

over to the dark clothes little wing [TS]

things up land and i was first time [TS]

actually that was it needs a little [TS]

things for the situation it made sense [TS]

to me because they're entering the [TS]

hangar which probably has artificial [TS]

gravity it was some sort of with that [TS]

but it really goes in that space [TS]

Donald continues I was amused idea I [TS]

well I mean you know 20 what to almost [TS]

30 years of watching this movie and I [TS]

did this is the first time it actually [TS]

even occurred to me i didn't care before [TS]

but now i'm looking for all the little [TS]

details looking for the Knicks as i said [TS]

i watch this with my kids and my kids [TS]

have played lego star wars through many [TS]

many times and I i like to bring up [TS]

funny things Mike it's a while watching [TS]

it down in these podcasts and that the [TS]

funniest thing that my son said during [TS]

the entire watching return of the jedi [TS]

which my kids love it's mike it's my [TS]

kids and we can talk about this too and [TS]

we talked about the prequels and all of [TS]

  that [TS]

this is my kids favorite of the Star [TS]

Wars movies which I you know I think [TS]

says something about its effectiveness [TS]

as a kids movie it and I do think that [TS]

maybe points the way a little bit to [TS]

where George Lucas was with [TS]

headed but anyway darth vader drips into [TS]

this poor guy who's been put in charge [TS]

of building the Death Star and leaving [TS]

behind the guy is standing there on the [TS]

shuttle deck and my son turns to me and [TS]

says in lego star wars that cries haha [TS]

also in return of the jedi he also cries [TS]

it's just inside he's yeah he goes into [TS]

a little side room to weep and write a [TS]

letter home explaining he may not be [TS]

  coming back [TS]

haven't started the negative high enough [TS]

to see his tix yet it could have been a [TS]

you know it could've been really driven [TS]

home if Darth Vader been like remember [TS]

the last guy who ran the desktop is a [TS]

severe amount of or lack thereof of [TS]

force choking in this movie i've noticed [TS]

me to make up for all this challenge [TS]

  then what happened that [TS]

yeah exactly yeah you don't think that [TS]

struck me about the hangar scene was the [TS]

obviously they built this set which they [TS]

used a couple times in this movie of the [TS]

big black floor and then like the matte [TS]

paintings behind in everything right [TS]

yeah and some that's a big tile black [TS]

floor with like scuff marks all over it [TS]

and looking at that floor like you know [TS]

if they did that and a green screen they [TS]

wouldn't have made the floor so kind of [TS]

like dingy looking because it's hard to [TS]

get a giant serve polished surface you [TS]

know in a computer you can get a [TS]

perfectly smooth classy black surface [TS]

made of tiles but these are these are [TS]

beat up tiles on a soundstage somewhere [TS]

and that that real this will be it is [TS]

something that still quite haven't quite [TS]

captured with CG and I mean they were so [TS]

excited about that floor that they [TS]

clipped it out to reuse it in the Empire [TS]

special edition in one answered it was [TS]

  good-looking floor [TS]

well so yeah so Darth Vader comes and [TS]

and and checks up on this poor guy who [TS]

then in lego star wars he cries and we [TS]

the stage is set the Death Star is being [TS]

rebuilt although I'm i guess by the way [TS]

know all the thermal exhaust is just [TS]

kept inside the Death Star forever there [TS]

no ports you would think they learned [TS]

  that lesson [TS]

  yeah it's like a it's about it's about [TS]

92 degree once we close up our once we [TS]

close up the superstructure will be safe [TS]

yeah right well so that they didn't [TS]

  build the time [TS]

and middle they haven't finished [TS]

constructing whether they left on huge [TS]

  tunnels and not done [TS]

yeah that's part of the current driver's [TS]

license through there but I think it's [TS]

pretty unlike once it's closed up [TS]

bulletproof or just I'm just saying [TS]

Emperor bulletproof once we finish it [TS]

but nobody we gotta protect me until [TS]

then it's not gonna work anyway so I on [TS]

to Tatooine I were back on Tatooine hey [TS]

that that was my notes like look its [TS]

tattoo we are again it was lazy but like [TS]

I kind of liked that book ending again [TS]

back to the first movie [TS]

yeah there's a lot of there's a lot of [TS]

callbacks obviously you know this being [TS]

the end of the trilogy there are a lot [TS]

of things in there that we visit that [TS]

our director of X either star wars or [TS]

Empire right you know because we go back [TS]

to Dagobah we go back to Tatooine on the [TS]

Death Star you know there's a lot of [TS]

time spent sort of you know referring to [TS]

things that happened earlier movies but [TS]

it's good gets it provides sort of [TS]

shorthand i think which is which is nice [TS]

we don't spend too much time you know [TS]

having to learn about new stuff we kind [TS]

of get tattooing right it's set up for [TS]

us and it's a good wraparound because so [TS]

this is a series of three movies and [TS]

then the first movie console mentions [TS]

Jabba the Hutt although the scene with [TS]

him is cut because he was just some [TS]

  Irish dude job [TS]

Oh hut well he's not still just an Irish [TS]

dude he might be I don't know it's hard [TS]

to tell me what that but he's mentioned [TS]

and then and then you wait until you [TS]

know one movie and then add another [TS]

movie and then you're like oh yeah [TS]

that's that guy that they talked about [TS]

in the first movie and he's an integral [TS]

part of this movie you know it up the [TS]

most movie series don't have that kind [TS]

of patience and I don't know it's just [TS]

because Lucas didn't have any idea what [TS]

or who job about was in the beginning [TS]

and just needed Han Solo somebody money [TS]

and then I thought if the third movie [TS]

  remember that job [TS]

why don't we just put him in this one [TS]

and then they figure out what he is or [TS]

you know because most of the time movies [TS]

will not plan out a narc that long i can [TS]

you mentioned job that you mentioned job [TS]

with a hard act 1 and i get off your ass [TS]

and check out once said ya back to that [TS]

job that's got to go all he's got he's [TS]

got to be hired again so so you're right [TS]

it's funny when you think about it that [TS]

this is the story about Luke and his [TS]

journey and our theater and the [TS]

rebellion but all three movies have as [TS]

one of the major plot elements on solo [TS]

owing some money to a big blob on [TS]

Tatooine we know he's a big blob we [TS]

don't know it turns out he's a big blob [TS]

but yeah so he owns he owes the money [TS]

that's why takes the job in the first [TS]

movie that's why both that is looking [TS]

for him in a second movie and of course [TS]

then we have to free him in the third [TS]

movie so in the end it feels very [TS]

effective as this overarching story even [TS]

though i think you're right John that it [TS]

you know it may just have been the [TS]

screenwriters picking up the plot [TS]

threads it's like a it's out there you [TS]

know gives us something to do so let's [TS]

let's keep following through and they [TS]

chose to make that the second [TS]

sort of downer is that are here are one [TS]

of the characters that we love gets [TS]

captured because of this he's you know [TS]

taking off by belief that you have to [TS]

find out what happened on so that's what [TS]

we're all waiting for right [TS]

oh yeah so you know he he was sent the [TS]

bounty hunter goddamn goes back to job [TS]

hunt you gotta find that worried about [TS]

ya so they knock on job as front door as [TS]

  you do [TS]

r2d2 and c3po very wizard of oz like [TS]

  shot [TS]

yes there's some there's some nice [TS]

backfill in there to where they're like [TS]

oh you know Lando into we went to this [TS]

place and never came back [TS]

yeah follow along kids were already set [TS]

  up [TS]

yeah there definitely is a lot of that [TS]

sort of trying to there's a condensed [TS]

yeah trying to set your out delivering [TS]

you with this information that you need [TS]

i'll tell the story that you've yeah [TS]

although that's actually a problem [TS]

because when c-3po and r2d2 get inside [TS]

one of the wines that struck me as a [TS]

real clunker is where c-3po says are to [TS]

look captain solo and he's still frozen [TS]

in carbonite as he was at the end of the [TS]

last film where we if you recall the you [TS]

know it's like yeah yeah we saw the [TS]

movie but clearly this is just like [TS]

recap for those who you know because [TS]

it's a movie and maybe you have to start [TS]

  over [TS]

he's an avid God while singing he is [TS]

yes java is a collector of art really [TS]

the droids are always used for that [TS]

expedition type stuff it's just that you [TS]

can do it gracefully and you can do it [TS]

clumsily this example of the ones and [TS]

Jedi start sliding over to that other [TS]

side and you know again getting back to [TS]

the signs being there to George Lucas [TS]

didn't write this movie by himself [TS]

Kasdan is credited with the the screen [TS]

play along with him so I don't know what [TS]

the split was there but clearly it's not [TS]

Lucas by himself and it's like well this [TS]

has been asked to do it you can make the [TS]

droids provide exposition that does not [TS]

make our teeth go on edge but now it's [TS]

like a little kiss in there you know [TS]

just saying let's do the casting got all [TS]

the good lines and Lucas got all the bad [TS]

  ones [TS]

it's pretty same exemption it's [TS]

expedient yeah because we have evidence [TS]

of waters can do on his own with Leigh [TS]

  Brackett I guess [TS]

and what does Lucas doing his own and [TS]

it's it's a very very clear line there [TS]

let's say also I I suppose that this [TS]

could have happened off-screen but you [TS]

know I think job as security is really [TS]

  bad [TS]

it's like I mean like our to just like [TS]

let these guys rolling I mean if I [TS]

r2d2 is like a packed with explosives [TS]

boom that's the end of Jabba the Hutt [TS]

right so it's so hard to find good help [TS]

you know I mean they're not the most [TS]

strong-willed smart guy knows those a [TS]

beginner marine guards not really not [TS]

really great hired for their [TS]

intelligence to pick the big guys did [TS]

you let in somebody's Jessa give them [TS]

their actual name it guards [TS]

ah guards guards right there goes [TS]

forward to my name right i mean i'm not [TS]

in another movie the people i think the [TS]

competence of the guards and jobs [TS]

palaces in fitting with the overall tone [TS]

of this section of the movie in the [TS]

whole movie there's a little bit of a [TS]

kind of action adventure jokey thing not [TS]

  they're going into self-parody but i [TS]

would like some of the Indiana draw [TS]

movies start to sway into this a little [TS]

bit too will ya Jones is more kind of [TS]

light-hearted but this movie is much [TS]

more about look at these funny villains [TS]

aren't they they're kind of scary but [TS]

they're also kind of goofy and it's it [TS]

it's not i'm not gonna say it's devolved [TS]

  into self-parody but it's it's there's [TS]

enough of a history with the two movies [TS]

behind it that they can do a little bit [TS]

of the self tweaking and that I think [TS]

you had influences the whole tone of [TS]

this movie and I don't think that's [TS]

  appropriate [TS]

yeah yeah I know it also means a little [TS]

more it's a little more humor than we've [TS]

seen I mean there is humor in the [TS]

earlier movies but it's a little more [TS]

overt here i think or the the tone of it [TS]

is slightly different and I think that's [TS]

not agree that's not a bad thing you [TS]

know they kind of earned it at this [TS]

point and it's not all jokey right like [TS]

there's definitely some stuff later on [TS]

which will get to which is which is [TS]

actually pretty dramatic and pretty [TS]

serious so we are two fires off again a [TS]

call back to the first movie fires off [TS]

his hologram skywalker jedi priest and [TS]

there's Luke Skywalker wearing his [TS]

little black priest and say I've always [TS]

thought he looks like a pretty it's that [TS]

literally the contrary right but i like [TS]

  it smaller [TS]

yeah he's got a little taller but like [TS]

it looks like a like it ya like a dog [TS]

  collar [TS]

yeah I i love that Jedi priest we find [TS]

out why he sent the droids all the way [TS]

  there [TS]

yeah right we got was just mailing some [TS]

pigeons isn't typical typical droids [TS]

  comic relief and [TS]

nothing funnier than seeing c-3po [TS]

flustered it's the I give you these [TS]

droids and what did he say that was good [TS]

delivery because they don't linger on it [TS]

and they keep going you're playing the [TS]

wrong message that that is a senior [TS]

video is not Katherine Hepburn sorry [TS]

  about that [TS]

  no he's not he's I and a callback that I [TS]

really appreciate it is the restraining [TS]

bolt which is used on them because that [TS]

is the coolest bolt of all the [TS]

restraining bolt that makes how it works [TS]

droids do that your bidding [TS]

you can still see in the corner when in [TS]

that shot when they're like being [TS]

processed you can see these sort of [TS]

David where the first restraining bolt [TS]

was put on c-3po and it's kind of like [TS]

all but a nice callback just they didn't [TS]

ever replace that piece of the armor [TS]

no I mean they could have in Cloud City [TS]

but there were no guns and stormtroopers [TS]

so so what else do we have here there's [TS]

a an arrival of a strange Bounty Hunter [TS]

we haven't seen before before that you [TS]

got the the recurring that we like [TS]

thrown into to the unseen rank or [TS]

  monster [TS]

yeah i got set up yeah they didn't show [TS]

you she goes she falls down a pit [TS]

everyone books but we don't get to see [TS]

so that's not right now during their [TS]

yeah and you get to see her dance around [TS]

and stuff briefly while you get that you [TS]

get that lovely eighties inspired disco [TS]

e number with the max rebo's band tear [TS]

she's a maniac on the floor hey it's yes [TS]

it's Jabba the Hutt's Flashdance one of [TS]

the things that I get out again [TS]

not that we're going this early a whole [TS]

bunch of the special edition but man the [TS]

musical number in the special election [TS]

  is terrible [TS]

now mr. it totally doesn't fit the tone [TS]

of the pieces the thing I didn't you [TS]

  know as a whole [TS]

yeah that's dated the sort of musical [TS]

number for the original one but it's [TS]

consistent with the rest of the movie [TS]

yeah and it's about balance it's about [TS]

balancing the tone this isn't a musical [TS]

and it's not like we're and now for this [TS]

commercial break now right well I mean [TS]

it feels right for a sort of the CD [TS]

gangster palace there's even a little [TS]

bit of sort of bug a new re field be a [TS]

nightclub in common is they're not going [TS]

to hire first class musicians it's just [TS]

kinda like yeah this is our hand [TS]

apparently made them in you know not [TS]

shooting them so did all of us watch the [TS]

d specialized version for this podcast [TS]

or did did you watch the special edition [TS]

else these specialized yeah yeah [TS]

  specialized [TS]

of course yeah okay I like the lead [TS]

singer is hideously ugly that creature [TS]

yeah i mean with a little stick though [TS]

on the agency is now a giant potato with [TS]

  legs [TS]

well how much you get again and Tatooine [TS]

yeah well you know the dancer one of the [TS]

dancer girls is attractive but the [TS]

singer is just shoot i like I was like [TS]

that part of both the cantina and this [TS]

is like you know these aliens are here [TS]

and they're gonna have attractive women [TS]

but attractive doesn't mean attractive [TS]

to us maybe that alien is attractive to [TS]

aliens of its species you know she's the [TS]

lead singer and she's all dolled up [TS]

  right [TS]

plus you got max rebo who is awesome the [TS]

blue LOL keyboard and yeah but you're [TS]

right the singer is just like got a big [TS]

cause mouth for two bronze spindly [TS]

  Muppet legs [TS]

yeah that's really where so that seems [TS]

weird in both versions but you're right [TS]

it's more like a pop performing as a [TS]

hospital attention it's a very nineties [TS]

feeling pop number unsurprisingly a plus [TS]

we've got the the introduction of also [TS]

of salacious crumb the little yeah [TS]

laughing Muppet guy at least one been [TS]

delightful my creepy way thanks for [TS]

finally sees reveal his found is equal [TS]

his nemesis malaysia scrub i will eat [TS]

your I droid okay because he does remind [TS]

me of them of like a like the who's the [TS]

guy who throws the fish in the muppet [TS]

show reminds me of that guy a little bit [TS]

like it is very Muppet like in his he's [TS]

Rizzo except he doesn't talk is really [TS]

  so there you go [TS]

ok just laughs maniacally and press III [TS]

PS i think someone told me recently that [TS]

they met a girl who laughs just like [TS]

kind of terrible here so so so new [TS]

bounty hunter we've never seen before [TS]

nobody hired calm and let me tell you [TS]

with a thermal detonator more haha [TS]

that's what my favorite languages like [TS]

that whole that later home and rock it [TS]

yeah like that net word that is a [TS]

  multi-purpose word that is [TS]

hey how's it going hey I want 50,000 hey [TS]

I've got a bomb like it's just two words [TS]

that it's all about intonation one of my [TS]

notes here is the star wars star wars [TS]

made-up language suck this is [TS]

this is about the same time that there [TS]

that they had in the e if you're going [TS]

to give anything to the star trek movies [TS]

let's give them that they actually had a [TS]

linguist make up a language that more [TS]

with Klingon a little bit with Vulcan [TS]

that that more or less [TS]

sounds like a a language that is not [TS]

English whereas the star wars made up [TS]

languages are just did the same [TS]

syllables as the English words and they [TS]

just throw in different sounds amazing [TS]

justin is a standard though [TS]

Harold all the stars speak languages [TS]

have character though because the lines [TS]

delivered in the make no sense [TS]

grammatically or have any relation to [TS]

what it is they're saying but they have [TS]

a sort of singsong quality like it's the [TS]

sound that these characters should make [TS]

you know that the bounty hunter should [TS]

sound like the fact that the the [TS]

intonation is exactly the information of [TS]

the subtitles is so painful to me [TS]

because it like but I just like a [TS]

language that little a little kid would [TS]

make up like I'm going to speak make [TS]

language now my morning bika make money [TS]

mo it's like you know that wouldn't know [TS]

it's not in English with different [TS]

sounds fun of the show uh I started [TS]

giving credit the you know as I did I [TS]

think in the first movie for you know [TS]

being willing to put a subtitles right [TS]

moving right that's right is ostensibly [TS]

forget and be there are lots of lines [TS]

that they don't subtitle exactly my idea [TS]

to pick it up for all of good Fortuna's [TS]

dialogue right when he's talking to them [TS]

at the beginning it's all on subtitled [TS]

three people understand it and we just [TS]

sort of we pick it up from context and [TS]

later on with the Ewok same thing like [TS]

they don't speak you know anything [TS]

that's intelligible it's not translated [TS]

all we just have to understand what [TS]

they're saying it's very well i think [TS]

that's that's pretty brave Pharaoh for a [TS]

movie that's you know intended for a a [TS]

mass audience that's very specifically [TS]

selected to there's one scene in Jabba's [TS]

palace when with between the bounty [TS]

hunter I think we're the one the only [TS]

subtitled line we get in that exchange [TS]

between the bounty hunter at least of [TS]

java of Java's between the bounty hunter [TS]

and java is his like this bounty hunter [TS]

is my kind of scum and then it is an [TS]

event yes it's almost like the subtitles [TS]

are our personal asides right [TS]

no it'sit's very artfully done i just i [TS]

think the sound of the made-up languages [TS]

  is is that bullsh [TS]

they didn't put a lot of work into into [TS]

  it back [TS]

to making fun of yourself a little bit [TS]

so it's like yeah we're not we're not [TS]

linguists its star wars it's a space [TS]

opera modeled after flash gordon we're [TS]

just gonna have some fun and make are [TS]

made up languages sound as ridiculous as [TS]

  possible [TS]

Jillian's do you really think that this [TS]

was a conscious decision or do you think [TS]

this was just in confidence because it [TS]

feels to me it honestly I this is one of [TS]

those ones that I'm just not buying it I [TS]

feel like I this is always rubbed me [TS]

wrong i'm actually surprised that I mean [TS]

because it's you could say just say it's [TS]

just our track right but likely Klingon [TS]

I mean it's yeah it's funny that people [TS]

will teach Klingon but i think it's in [TS]

  confidence i think it's just it's a [TS]

difference of priorities i think that [TS]

you know in the in the star trek [TS]

universe i think the people creating [TS]

that universe were very interested in [TS]

the same way that Tolkien was in like [TS]

creating a language that actually was [TS]

made sense right they did it with death [TS]

rockridge with Dothraki and Game of [TS]

Thrones too i think i think its star [TS]

wars they just it's not so much [TS]

confidence says this was not a priority [TS]

they didn't really care the mother [TS]

focusing on how these languages sound [TS]

the mean characters gotta have a mean [TS]

sounding thing and like that it was all [TS]

  about it [TS]

conveying things about character very [TS]

little about it believable language or [TS]

culture but it couldn't have just [TS]

changed the syllable pattern a little [TS]

bit couldn't have written you know java [TS]

syllable pattern is off a little bit [TS]

from what he says or like that or like [TS]

change the subtitle so it's not a [TS]

literal translation of what they were [TS]

saying in English and turned into sound [TS]

because it just it always felt it just [TS]

meant a little too close to the [TS]

subtitles and always rang wrong for me [TS]

  just struck me wrong I didn't I don't [TS]

wanna you know get up too much it's just [TS]

you always wanted another 20 minutes it [TS]

always just made me think like wow [TS]

that's awfully awfully close to the what [TS]

i'm reading in the subtitle here [TS]

no I so they're not even speaking [TS]

english Jason it's a long time ago and I [TS]

don't fucking so it back to that bounty [TS]

hunter sounds like says that one word [TS]

over and over again that me has many [TS]

different meanings movie what I was [TS]

struck by listening to that process [TS]

voices you know carrie fisher's voice [TS]

now sounds actually exactly how much I [TS]

was gonna say she's got a couple lines [TS]

later in the movie where you like oh [TS]

that's the current day Carrie Fisher you [TS]

can only out she's been she's been [TS]

smoking a little bit there's a little [TS]

she was living hard a bit of a rascal [TS]

so did anybody know either because of [TS]

spoilers or because they figured it out [TS]

that was Princess Leia when they first [TS]

see there's no no no i don't know that i [TS]

can remember that sorry I'll rend i [TS]

noticed Lando and i noticed Lando giving [TS]

the bounty hunter like it and like it [TS]

  hmm you're interesting [TS]

windows like to something was either [TS]

Luke or was laying it was like well I [TS]

had the only thing I remember picking up [TS]

was that both that was clearly trying to [TS]

pick up this bounty hunter so then I [TS]

love ya under its not bow [TS]

isn't that nice my favorite we call the [TS]

  above fed nod [TS]

Oh was so cold though I I admire your [TS]

  skills [TS]

nicely played it safe yes very clever [TS]

but you're no good for cocky this is my [TS]

arena but also be saying hey ladies and [TS]

so that tipped me off as a kid that [TS]

tipped me off that this is a female [TS]

bounty hunter but I in no way knew that [TS]

was Princess Leia because I was not very [TS]

smart as a child apparently but I so [TS]

this this is a great thing about these [TS]

movies that it was still bet it was back [TS]

when you could still be surprised about [TS]

stuff like this because even if I was [TS]

the same age in the modern era trailers [TS]

and stuff would have ruined it for me [TS]

because they always do and would have [TS]

revealed that that's Princess Leia but I [TS]

was totally surprised that this is this [TS]

ends up being Princess Leia I was even [TS]

surprised when he made the nodding like [TS]

a girl bounty hunter didn't sound like a [TS]

girl but you know they don't do that [TS]

much of a job hiding the fact that she's [TS]

built like a girl like you can see that [TS]

you have smaller and has helped you look [TS]

  at her legs too [TS]

yeah right which I wasn't clearly doing [TS]

  as a kid [TS]

yoto the highest compliment you can pay [TS]

someone in that language I'm just saying [TS]

it's also be the highest insult [TS]

so what is the that I've got some [TS]

strategy questions here for those of you [TS]

who know so much about this for my first [TS]

question is about job because they allow [TS]

even a java likes his hatzolah wall [TS]

  hanging [TS]

they allow the this new bounty hunter [TS]

with a thermal detonator to sneak back [TS]

into the room later in the evening and [TS]

fallout han solo while they watch is [TS]

Lando part of that why i meant to look [TS]

and I forgot to look this time when I [TS]

was watching through but if he's gonna [TS]

get you out of low i kind of feel like [TS]

he almost tipped them off too [TS]

done like javas jobs good side and get [TS]

on the knowledge like i don't know i [TS]

mean i was thinkin away with it there [TS]

Dean they're out there right [TS]

I think it fits with job Java's it [TS]

strikes me as a practical jokester and [TS]

all the people hang out with him it's [TS]

kind of like an entourage hanging around [TS]

a celebrity yeah they're hanging out [TS]

because they want to like have fun and [TS]

do the board the board most of the time [TS]

in this palace that's why they drop the [TS]

slave girl down to the rank order to see [TS]

you good eating like me something to [TS]

detain them and this is pretty darn [TS]

entertaining like the guys are sneaking [TS]

in and taking out the thing and then we [TS]

catch them in the act and we throw him [TS]

into the sorrow I know and he's and he's [TS]

a bit cocky too right [TS]

it's like yeah whatever you guys think [TS]

it's gonna get freedom later [TS]

yeah it won't have to kill him against [TS]

like I caught him in carbonite and now I [TS]

  get to kill him [TS]

bonus everything's coming up java ok so [TS]

my next I mean really the next 10 [TS]

minutes you have someone next strategy [TS]

question is they bring in chewy right [TS]

Chewie is brought in by the bounty [TS]

hunter and wen wen Han is thought out in [TS]

the end and Leia and Han Akkad and they [TS]

throw hon down into the into the hit but [TS]

a little bit Ranger well they decide [TS]

with chewy right so I have something [TS]

that I haven't thought of before is was [TS]

that there was that plan B was that [TS]

chewy would be there for him because [TS]

he's actually kind of protects on while [TS]

he's blind and all that did I mean I [TS]

suppose I'm trying to make a reason why [TS]

this incredible coincidence might make [TS]

sense but they're my plan basically flat [TS]

bar it's all a long con [TS]

I mean why why would the droids get sent [TS]

there are two with the lightsaber inside [TS]

of him me and that's right inside you [TS]

know it's it's all a complete long con [TS]

devised by luke and I would say also by [TS]

Lando and chewy as a way to get around i [TS]

don't think we're never getting out [TS]

well everything maybe we'll get out but [TS]

if not then we've got you know the next [TS]

circle and then we got the next circle [TS]

I don't take anything as a plan with [TS]

contingencies right they have they have [TS]

plan a plan B Plan C and plan B and Plan [TS]

B is our teachers got a lightsaber [TS]

inside them and recenter boots and [TS]

everything to explain something is our [TS]

duty to use it the lightsaber nobody [TS]

wants to see that and didn't did you [TS]

guys see scott Walker's 11 [TS]

I mean it was pretty much the same plot [TS]

yea RT has little sparkle thing he just [TS]

pretty well when playing outfits we go [TS]

dr. r2d2 suicide bomber he just played [TS]

the crap out of the home with you got [TS]

another moment that you don't ya [TS]

only the rancor survives speaking of [TS]

unfreezing i like how Harrison Ford [TS]

looks like a wet dishrag when it comes [TS]

out of that carbonite didn't just happen [TS]

like come out until i came here i am he [TS]

looks like someone shoot him up and spit [TS]

him out he does a great job shakes it [TS]

anyways to know that he doesn't have his [TS]

trademark fest pork-belly say he was [TS]

taken away from Dino wearing obviously [TS]

exactly just what he was wearing when he [TS]

got thrown in except i think they [TS]

actually tie his arms or something in an [TS]

empire which is not there but I i kinda [TS]

like he does a good job of sort of the [TS]

whole hibernation sickness thing and the [TS]

thing that always struck me and I could [TS]

never tell if it was a result of some [TS]

like a ATR looping or something is that [TS]

in that scene where they train with [TS]

chewy he's got that whole like I'm [TS]

alright and then the second time he says [TS]

it is voices like BAM alright O'Malia [TS]

he's like I'm all right tail [TS]

yeah they were good they have a tender [TS]

relationship in this movie i love i love [TS]

the relationship between shooting on [TS]

just one the edge of tears and that last [TS]

that last bit when he has been chilly is [TS]

holding him it's really cute so uh [TS]

top-10 romances so uh Luke Skywalker [TS]

finally appears in his robe [TS]

we've got the you know Luke has come a [TS]

long way last time we saw him on [TS]

Tatooine you know he was just this kid [TS]

who wanted to go to Tashi station to [TS]

pick up some power converters and now [TS]

he's got his robe and he's kind of a [TS]

badass and he force he forced jokes a [TS]

pig guard that's right to two of ya out [TS]

for a little island which is always [TS]

exciting friend it is a little little [TS]

bit of our society and older exercise [TS]

wear all black right i mean what bad [TS]

guys were black or good guys wear black [TS]

guys white right like all the [TS]

  stormtroopers wear white [TS]

they got to be a for you guys you gotta [TS]

wear black just to differentiate [TS]

yourself i guess so so so any use of the [TS]

jedi mind trick to see force-choked [TS]

sandy uses the Jedi mind trick so [TS]

shocking thing is all is a little [TS]

interesting and I had a debate and [TS]

endless debate with my friend Evan as a [TS]

kid as to whether or not you know well [TS]

isn't that dark side and he replied no [TS]

no he just made them think they were [TS]

choked with Israel and help you to loved [TS]

but do you have any evidence that no but [TS]

I'm pretty sure that's true [TS]

I recall very clearly from what I [TS]

watched this movie the first time that [TS]

that seeing Luke in black and and very [TS]

serious it's a real you know it's a real [TS]

change like wow he's serious and it's [TS]

like he's walking the walk of being a [TS]

Jedi now and yet with the fourth [TS]

Shogun's also like well he's kinda scary [TS]

he and which is setting up the whole [TS]

could he be turned to the dark side [TS]

thing too and it's it's a big change [TS]

people his whole demeanor is so [TS]

different from Star Wars and empire [TS]

right and they doing I think you know a [TS]

lot of people not not Campbell but I [TS]

think he does a really good job of doing [TS]

that transition from you know that the [TS]

the farm boy and the first one to the [TS]

guy who sort of still impetuous and [TS]

brash and the second one but is sort of [TS]

calming down a little bit you know [TS]

also i love that they you know he was [TS]

great in the middle one right like to go [TS]

from white to gray black and the last [TS]

one he's pues extremely chill there are [TS]

a couple scenes where that facade brakes [TS]

a little bit but like for the most part [TS]

he does a really good job and I think [TS]

unfortunately that you know for better [TS]

or worse that his facial reconstruction [TS]

definitely makes him look older yeah and [TS]

you know this works with han han comes [TS]

out of the carbonite and he's like what [TS]

Luke saving us that guy that kid you [TS]

know who I saved twice and where we like [TS]

the audience are like Han lights blue [TS]

he's gonna say mostly he just got his [TS]

butt kicked by Vader and his hand [TS]

chopped off he sucks right well remember [TS]

that the last time that those two [TS]

characters saw each other is actually [TS]

the beginning of empire right right [TS]

where he was like saying you wanna come [TS]

into at on you know that the guy who's [TS]

gonna come save me i'm constantly saving [TS]

my god now we're really screwed so we [TS]

the audience feel the same way and it's [TS]

nice to see Luke kind of walk in he's [TS]

all calm and more like you know you [TS]

don't know like who is this guy whoever [TS]

lets on that this is plan D ya he really [TS]

you know these things calm even then [TS]

even the face of plans a B and CEO fail [TS]

every plant is planning a and one of the [TS]

nice cuts that they made is there is and [TS]

i think this is included on the Real on [TS]

the blu-ray edition there is an early [TS]

scene which shows you mean basically [TS]

like obi-wan's house building his [TS]

lightsaber yeah nothing says a dramatic [TS]

entrance to exactly i think the entrance [TS]

is much much better serve this way and [TS]

that's really not necessary plus the [TS]

whole thing like wait where is like like [TS]

he lost his lightsaber oh crap that's [TS]

why is like grabbed the gun from the guy [TS]

with his forceful there and I think it's [TS]

really interesting when he gets dropped [TS]

down into the rancor pit and strikes [TS]

javas higher that there's actually a few [TS]

moments where we get terrified farm boy [TS]

Luke when he realizes oh crap I'm up [TS]

against a giant monster but i like it i [TS]

like his plan and his plan is I'm gonna [TS]

let him pick me up [TS]

grab the bone let him bring me all the [TS]

way to us me that's a pretty risky plan [TS]

considered you know so even though he is [TS]

kinda like a giant rank are he execute a [TS]

plan that shows some confidence in the [TS]

abilities that constantly running away [TS]

his plan involves being brought right up [TS]

to the monsters mouth and stick in a [TS]

  bone in it [TS]

yeah because he sees what happens that [TS]

guard finger looking good now yeah yeah [TS]

you know the pig guards by the way they [TS]

have a really lack in empathy because [TS]

one of one of their own guys falls into [TS]

the pit in there rootin for anything and [TS]

they laugh like humans do that to Jason [TS]

  humans do that [TS]

oh it's that's well it's terrible going [TS]

to the Roman Colosseum it's horrible [TS]

shame on the pig guards we left out if I [TS]

left that I think I loved with the the [TS]

Han Solo when he first gets on frozen [TS]

and he's talking to you know he's got [TS]

the whole I know that laugh and the [TS]

turnaround i love that he starts talking [TS]

to the wall your return and Leia has to [TS]

drive around this is one of those it [TS]

undercuts at all a job [TS]

no no he's not over there [TS]

life hey job look at this job I was just [TS]

on my way to pay you back and I got a [TS]

little sidetrack it's not my fault [TS]

java update trip you're throwing away a [TS]

fortune here don't be a fool [TS]

princess Leia's famous a bikini makes [TS]

its appearance here too and I had all [TS]

exchange with somebody on Twitter the [TS]

other hand about and i'll say hear what [TS]

I said there which is for all the [TS]

  pop-culture significance that Princess [TS]

Leia and her in her kind of bondage [TS]

chains bikini all that as a like [TS]

fabulous seminal the teenager but lost [TS]

object kind of thing whatever you know [TS]

it well as we said on our Empire podcast [TS]

and carrie fisher's way more attractive [TS]

in the Empire Strikes Back and here it's [TS]

it's really kind of creepy and and it's [TS]

not supposed to be nice she's in like a [TS]

slave and it's easy it's yucky so I just [TS]

thought I'd say that I was coming to Dan [TS]

the first shot we see of her in the in [TS]

the bikini is of her legs and ass as [TS]

it's a slow pan like we don't even we [TS]

see like the tail and then the bottom [TS]

half of Carrie Fisher like oh ok that's [TS]

a and objectively it's also just kind of [TS]

it's kind of a we're talking about the [TS]

tone of this movie again and that's [TS]

that's an odd choice to or a movie bet [TS]

as we were saying does seem to veer a [TS]

little more into the kid-friendly yeah [TS]

that's you know by far the most risque [TS]

this stores gets and the reason it [TS]

stands out is the kids who are into Star [TS]

Wars kind of hit them right at the time [TS]

where is a character that you knew it's [TS]

like it's like seeing the girl next door [TS]

in a bikini and I mean because he is the [TS]

person we knew for a long time and now [TS]

we're seeing skin just basically comes [TS]

down to that we're seeing more skin than [TS]

we saw in the previous movies but i [TS]

agree with Jason she is she's more [TS]

attractive and you're like yeah and it [TS]

only had no idea what's going on and [TS]

Carrie Fisher the actresses life during [TS]

this time she got her she's got her [TS]

cocaine body is real slow really Slim's [TS]

  you down [TS]

she's not good and everything but she [TS]

also looks more of a mile lot it's the [TS]

  mileage [TS]

yeah I also i also got to say that a [TS]

that this I had this I kept expecting a [TS]

couple shots that I realized were [TS]

  because [TS]

I grew up watching this movie so many [TS]

times on my old pan and scan [TS]

oh yeah happy and so like there are [TS]

times where there's a scene where I well [TS]

during the rake or fights going on they [TS]

sort of you know go up cut up to the to [TS]

carry like struggling against you know a [TS]

struggle against the chain from java and [TS]

it's an in my recollection is always a [TS]

shot of salacious crumb and in a pan [TS]

over to c java and Leia and then [TS]

everytime i watch this on widescreen and [TS]

it's actually oh we can fit the whole [TS]

shot in there because i'm actually [TS]

watching a widescreen version of this [TS]

but it's so in your to me from my [TS]

childhood where it was just like that [TS]

was the copy i had was you know my VHS [TS]

copies from like the early nineties or [TS]

  something [TS]

yeah I have that with a couple movies [TS]

from the eighties to similar thing it's [TS]

like you know if you watch the pan and [TS]

scan version a lot is Ghostbusters find [TS]

yourself wishing to raise the last are [TS]

going there lots of movies like that I [TS]

i'm expecting the pan and scan and I'm [TS]

reminded that it's not there anymore [TS]

that we're back to the movie as it was [TS]

made i got yeah it's good it's good to [TS]

the rancor in the I believe Roger Ebert [TS]

review of Return of the Jedi he has a a [TS]

great comment about the rancor being [TS]

killed and it and it's something that I [TS]

i laughed at when i read it because I I [TS]

I feel this way to the shirtless man who [TS]

is obviously the keeper and trainer of [TS]

the rancor beast is very sad almost [TS]

beside himself needs to be consoled when [TS]

he discovers that his beast has been [TS]

killed and what Hebert says about it is [TS]

it shows that even a monster has [TS]

somebody who loves it and I always loved [TS]

that it was a great great little see [TS]

that the guy is really upset because [TS]

it's his monster he won't really hard on [TS]

that monster and now it's dead and [TS]

that's really more a year jokey you know [TS]

type stuff where you like to think of [TS]

the trash compactor monster a new hope [TS]

all right there was some joking [TS]

involvement but when the trash compactor [TS]

monster was attacking and they were [TS]

escaping it was pretty darn serious you [TS]

know but here is now like you got to [TS]

have the gag line after the thing is [TS]

killed to show the guy laughing so that [TS]

that fits with the tone of this movie is [TS]

being held slightly more lighthearted [TS]

you know i love the I love the design of [TS]

the rank or two which is the one thing [TS]

another thing I notice is there's this [TS]

great little detail where when you sort [TS]

  of bearing [TS]

down Luke and you seem sort of snarl and [TS]

embarrassed Heath or whatever you can [TS]

see that his forehead actually kind of [TS]

depresses it's fascinating little detail [TS]

and I think there's sort of a vague [TS]

illusion or foreshadowing there's like [TS]

that's basically right where the door [TS]

hit him when it comes down it's like [TS]

always got a soft spot on top of his [TS]

head but it's lovely little you if you [TS]

haven't seen it just go back and watch [TS]

  that scene there's a little there's a [TS]

little clip where it's like he breathes [TS]

out and you see his forehead sort of a [TS]

concave there which is just it's it's a [TS]

throwaway thing that they just shows how [TS]

much energy and time they put into [TS]

creating these models which it i love [TS]

stop-motion drool stop-motion drool we [TS]

have a hanging from someone's got to [TS]

animate that piece of drool [TS]

I will say though that the am adding [TS]

compositing in the in the high def [TS]

version that is taken from the special [TS]

edition is vastly that but then I [TS]

remember that that's another shot is so [TS]

ingrained in me from watching years upon [TS]

years of the old VHS version is that [TS]

shot looks just like the leg of the [TS]

rancor and looks behind it and it seems [TS]

you have scales it's such a terrible [TS]

Matt but a it looks it looks it looks [TS]

pretty good actually in the the more [TS]

modern version so shall we move outside [TS]

to Jabba's Sail Barge where r2d2 was [TS]

  previously assigned coincidentally party [TS]

barge nothing like having a floating [TS]

party over the sand on their weight as [TS]

certain prisoners death as the store [TS]

Olympic but we missed one that we missed [TS]

one of the great dialogue scenes that [TS]

which at which is one of my favorites of [TS]

all time which is the you know together [TS]

  again yes [TS]

  alright fine together again [TS]

would listen how we do it always that [TS]

  bad huh [TS]

that scene starts to really push the [TS]

boundaries of how jokey we can be while [TS]

still taking things seriously and it [TS]

works mostly because of Harrison Ford's [TS]

charm and the lines are not bad but like [TS]

what every time i watch that now I [TS]

remember loving that seems so much about [TS]

the kid and I'm when I see it now i'm [TS]

likely they're really skirting the line [TS]

there was there you try it you know you [TS]

you wanted to wear your imagine John I'm [TS]

not a lot of come out like that the [TS]

lines nothing are fine it's just like [TS]

that's it that's almost as far as they [TS]

take the the tone into the [TS]

lightheartedness until we get to the [TS]

Ewoks so it doesn't bring me out of this [TS]

thing but it's kind of like it i take it [TS]

now is like kind of a little bit of [TS]

foreshadowing and i think i was this is [TS]

something I i found for watching this [TS]

movie over and over again as I've ages [TS]

that kids can handle shift in tone much [TS]

more easily than or at least I could [TS]

when I was a kid much more than adults [TS]

like these kids you can have a movie [TS]

with incredibly dramatic scenes which [TS]

the kids will take totally seriously and [TS]

ridiculous you know humor scenes in the [TS]

whole giant range and adults want some [TS]

consistency of tone otherwise they're [TS]

like what kind of movie am I watching [TS]

here and so I i found that i delighted [TS]

in this movie when i saw it as a kid and [TS]

the shift in tone didn't bother me at [TS]

all and now I can kind of see the seams [TS]

between the transitions of we're ok now [TS]

we're gonna take this seriously and now [TS]

we're going to be joking uh see them a [TS]

little bit more now than I did when I [TS]

  was a kid [TS]

well this whole set piece at the [TS]

beginning to write is very it's clearly [TS]

demarcated from the rest of the movie [TS]

you know you've got sort of that briefly [TS]

brief opening scene with darth vader own [TS]

on the Death Star and then you kind of [TS]

forgot about that she gets to Tatooine [TS]

and the whole thing on Tatooine is this [TS]

great sort of you know like we're saying [TS]

action adventure ii serial type things [TS]

like Indiana Jones movie really yeah [TS]

it's a little bit like an Indiana Jones [TS]

movie and there's some there's some [TS]

really fantastic scenes and like sort of [TS]

taken as itself you know i think it's [TS]

  it's really internally [TS]

this is consistent but yeah then when [TS]

you sort of shift to other places and [TS]

you always need as we'll talk a little [TS]

bit about the structure but like [TS]

directly after this right we're sort of [TS]

taken to another you know palate [TS]

cleanser scene with the Empire before we [TS]

get into a really dramatic see but yeah [TS]

the whole i love this whole section if [TS]

only because i love the whole skiff back [TS]

always we're about to discuss yes the [TS]

skiff battle it's it's great it's so [TS]

  well done [TS]

r2d2 is is delivering drinks he has a [TS]

drink platter tied to his head and he's [TS]

a man of many talents you do also have [TS]

  you have this scene [TS]

this is like the final bit where I I [TS]

remember loving this is a given Luke [TS]

gets up there is on the end of the plank [TS]

that's great you know a good puppy kind [TS]

of face is gonna make him walk the plank [TS]

they going to think and he's like this [TS]

is your last job chance job of free us [TS]

or die and like at that point like come [TS]

on is he serious is he seemed so [TS]

confident like don't you realize you're [TS]

about to be pushed into the pit with the [TS]

monster and you and everything has gone [TS]

well how did you think this was going to [TS]

be like a push through Skywalker off and [TS]

he's dead that's the end of the movie [TS]

it reminded me of a doctor who too [TS]

because that was I think with david [TS]

tennant especially that was like a thing [TS]

that you always you always get my which [TS]

  I I suppose I suppose it's probably [TS]

inspired by this but it's that heroes [TS]

moment of like all right I'm gonna give [TS]

you I'm gonna destroy you [TS]

unless you change your ways I'm giving [TS]

  you a chance [TS]

yeah he gives him so many chances but I [TS]

didn't believe him as a kid and as a kid [TS]

I said but Luke you can't your you can't [TS]

get out of this Luke you don't you [TS]

understand why is he so confident why is [TS]

confident Luke yeah why it looks so [TS]

confident in DCM higher when he got his [TS]

  butt kicked [TS]

and that makes is that makes this [TS]

triumph in this thing all the more [TS]

satisfying you can like he was serious [TS]

he did do it you know like he knew it [TS]

was gonna be all right all along he's [TS]

  not that simple [TS]

he's not a kid anymore right he's not [TS]

confident general about and i love the [TS]

musical cue here which is one of my [TS]

favorite Star Wars music you don't have [TS]

all three movies it all perfectly time [TS]

to build that suspension and then you [TS]

sort of go into the heroic theme from [TS]

there and I love you know there's so [TS]

much to love about this entire segment [TS]

of the movie I love this sort of yeah [TS]

again we're sort of veer into the comic [TS]

Jackie to orlando gets thrown you know [TS]

off the skiff and you slide down [TS]

saturday and honestly you're trying to [TS]

get them out and i think that works so [TS]

well here because then you're as soon as [TS]

the music starts playing and swing in [TS]

that green lights around like a baseball [TS]

bat you're like if your kids always like [TS]

you're so big smile on your face you [TS]

can't steam saying your seat and here we [TS]

go really fits with like the you know I [TS]

I thought you were blind all that stuff [TS]

going on totally works with the scene [TS]

because you just that's like the the [TS]

release the joyous crescendo this entire [TS]

  sequence [TS]

the boba fett dying without guys like a [TS]

chump doesn't like Jim not i'm not a [TS]

great way mr. wilhelm scream and he's [TS]

going to deserve better and by the way [TS]

this movie has the it will help screens [TS]

that are the farthest front and the mix [TS]

in any movie I can ever recall getting [TS]

there multiple ones of them and it's [TS]

like be dominant sounds like you know in [TS]

the background while had a couple [TS]

Wilhelm's they have like no I think it's [TS]

three times or two times they do a full [TS]

frontal Wilhelm that this is the main [TS]

audio you are hearing every piece of it [TS]

the loudest thing in the scene then [TS]

purchase want to make sure it got [TS]

recognize another so there's a comical [TS]

belt that's the second one in the movie [TS]

too so far there's the there's the one [TS]

outside a little frog outside of Jabba's [TS]

palace that eats a shower right burps [TS]

yeah and i think that the green light [TS]

saver like again going to the movie i [TS]

had no idea Luke's lightsaber would be [TS]

green because as far as i know he lost [TS]

his lightsaber it's just green it's like [TS]

a hundred percent green but it's such a [TS]

an iconic image from my childhood of [TS]

cinema like Luke with the green [TS]

lightsaber equals return of the jedi and [TS]

it it it works so well in a palette that [TS]

was the you know it's andy it's brown [TS]

there in the dark and Jabba's palace and [TS]

now you have this neon green thing [TS]

slicing through people and it's thicker [TS]

this is getting a little Freudian it's [TS]

thicker and bigger than then like the [TS]

the blue one is that especially Justin [TS]

but it's more of a broadsword than yeah [TS]

well it's gonna be like her own [TS]

lightsaber why you gonna get it right [TS]

well but it's special effects though [TS]

because they begin the new hope they had [TS]

like you know rods with beads on them [TS]

they were spinning and they would shine [TS]

lights in them and then an empire they [TS]

had I don't know if they still use that [TS]

effect but it was like skinnier looking [TS]

but by this time they had the Rose [TS]

coping stuff down there like no this is [TS]

gonna be a like a man slice here well [TS]

and you know worth bearing out the [TS]

special effects in this movie are in [TS]

many ways better than although so much [TS]

about it i'm going to say that some I [TS]

thought I'd Empire someone Empire stuff [TS]

  is better [TS]

yeah that's what we want to assistant [TS]

because you don't have all the yeah [TS]

really many tries stuff they try things [TS]

here that there were just a little bit [TS]

beyond their abilities where's Empire [TS]

was in the sweet spot where they went [TS]

beyond a new hope but everything they [TS]

did they executed like very very well in [TS]

this their kind of things to execute so [TS]

what that at the flip side there are a [TS]

couple things like its space battle at [TS]

the end which are just amazing which is [TS]

  still [TS]

are still unbeaten in my opinion don't [TS]

we also get a great call back to the [TS]

original movie here where Luke and Leia [TS]

are swinging on a rope again which I [TS]

really liked which is attached to what [TS]

it's attached i figured this out when I [TS]

was a kid with a lot to me too [TS]

alright here's what they're trying to [TS]

say where it's attached to this would be [TS]

like to be a pain having a barge right a [TS]

sail barge has a has a cloth roof thing [TS]

and the claw through thing extend out [TS]

past the edges of the sail barge so this [TS]

is one of the ropes that was attached to [TS]

the cloth things that he disengaged so i [TS]

can grow your diagram from but it [TS]

doesn't quite work with the distances [TS]

involved but it gives you something [TS]

it looks good up until that last shot [TS]

where they land on the little skittish [TS]

this too far holding it and the angles [TS]

wrong and it's just like a break 408 [TS]

degree line that's the issue [TS]

yeah i mean it's it's way too far away [TS]

and doesn't quite work as attached some [TS]

piece of writing on the set but at least [TS]

there's something hanging it will share [TS]

between them and the thing that's the [TS]

sort of the with a lightsaber thing i [TS]

like to point out that it apparently is [TS]

quite the bludgeoning weapon as yeah [TS]

with it and they just fall off the skin [TS]

instead of getting like cleaved and a [TS]

half is not so much slicing in these [TS]

movies because it easy supposed to be a [TS]

good guy and he was dismembering people [TS]

left and right and plus it i think the [TS]

trees on the lower setting guys I mean [TS]

is he added on-site sharp [TS]

yeah i think it's basically because the [TS]

special effects required to make a [TS]

lightsaber actually slice people up [TS]

didn't exist at the time would have been [TS]

tremendously expensive it's much cheaper [TS]

to have a stunt guy fall out right [TS]

yeah although we do have only one in the [TS]

first movie slicing that guy's well we [TS]

don't see that we just had we see slice [TS]

and then we see rubber arm falling [TS]

fluorine is a little bit more with blood [TS]

with blood pouring out which makes this [TS]

and it's wrong and anyway this is my [TS]

grass loot look at shot in the arm here [TS]

and and it's that moment then said is [TS]

setting up a later moment but it's that [TS]

it's that haha mechanical arm remember [TS]

an adult like that yet like so do we [TS]

know somebody else has got lots of [TS]

  mechanical parts [TS]

mm don't dwell on a nice little bit yeah [TS]

that they just set it up right just a [TS]

  setup [TS]

that's what's nice about it is it's [TS]

kinda subtle like they showed a couple [TS]

times you're like oh yeah is that [TS]

mechanical hand could guys hand cut off [TS]

and so I think that the payoff on it is [TS]

then is an excellent because you're not [TS]

really thinking about it in that [TS]

  direction if you [TS]

large if you want to start blowing up by [TS]

the way down because i'm watching that [TS]

the pits the more you watch yourself [TS]

hard blow up you can see that the thing [TS]

that he was swinging from standing out a [TS]

little bit on it they don't think this [TS]

thing that i'm reminded of is when a [TS]

bubblehead meets his said and I not [TS]

right before right before he does [TS]

consoles as Boba Fett and then he says [TS]

but that we're and I for the longest [TS]

time when I was a kid whose father being [TS]

it doesn't bother me as much now but I [TS]

still think about it he says boba fett [TS]

twice and they just replayed the same [TS]

set of him saying both that twice yeah [TS]

yep they didn't have a set of time I [TS]

also I'll interject with one of my as I [TS]

as I want to do there are a couple lines [TS]

i like a lot I i like better in the in [TS]

the radio drama version of Jedi for [TS]

example i really enjoy you don't want [TS]

your Mariette ID it's not legal in this [TS]

state yet but i really enjoy that when [TS]

when Hans hanging over and he liked [TS]

lowers the blaster to shoot the [TS]

technical describing Lando and let the [TS]

way that you were blind in the radio [TS]

  drama there's a scene because it's [TS]

alright i could see a lot better now [TS]

  I was the [TS]

that explosion is really large to i [TS]

wonder if there's like a plan [TS]

hey which was well and everything goes [TS]

really badly and it looks like we're [TS]

  gonna die [TS]

we've lined job the sale barn they've [TS]

actually just put on two droids with [TS]

explosive lab orange things because [TS]

animal detonators just explode really [TS]

big again it doesn't go up a little bit [TS]

it goes up a lot [TS]

  that's a highly flammable it wouldn't [TS]

pass inspection no wonder to java is [TS]

like kerosene that lives outside the law [TS]

yeah because that's a lot of interests [TS]

we left out that uh that lady gets to [TS]

delete deliver the killing blow [TS]

now on Jabba the Hutt but she still [TS]

  feisty one [TS]

yeah we've got her I mean it's nice they [TS]

do center a nice parallel job with on [TS]

trying to rescue Lando who's kicking [TS]

  everybody's ass and I'm incidentally i [TS]

also love the little judo flip that the [TS]

judo when he jumps onto the sail barge [TS]

and the world or pops up [TS]

there's a guy there and he's like [TS]

clinging on with one hand he's just like [TS]

a let me just put this guy out this [TS]

window here and lay gets to strangle [TS]

jabba the hut with your chain with a [TS]

  chain [TS]

yeah put me in Chains I'll show you [TS]

so moving on let's leave Tatooine behind [TS]

and we've got the arrival of the Emperor [TS]

at the new Death Star because again the [TS]

Emperor not a not just sending Darth [TS]

Vader to check up on on what's going on [TS]

with the Death Star he's actually his [TS]

advance man and the the Emperor is going [TS]

to make his own appearance and set up [TS]

shop in the under-construction death [TS]

star where you get this really [TS]

spectacular you know it's some actors [TS]

and mostly matte painting of these [TS]

stormtroopers and other people assembled [TS]

by the hundreds on the shuttlebay to [TS]

welcome be welcomed the Emperor to the [TS]

to the death star with his Red Guard [TS]

with the record i love the Red Guards so [TS]

much as even at the time I was like whoa [TS]

who are those guys and they don't really [TS]

do anything they're just kind of present [TS]

their the Imperial Guard but i always [TS]

loved them and this is another place [TS]

where my son exclaimed oh those guys are [TS]

so hard to kill in like a star wars' [TS]

right but but I remember as a kid I was [TS]

enthralled by the red it's like wait a [TS]

  second [TS]

these are stormtroopers he's like these [TS]

scary here that's like the Red Guards [TS]

with they stay with the Emperor and I [TS]

like the other I like his little advisor [TS]

guys you never get much to do kinda look [TS]

like rejects from like Wizard of Oz or [TS]

something now the pale they've got like [TS]

a purple yeah the purple face painting [TS]

like crazy like Russian hats and stuff [TS]

like that and again with the red with [TS]

the red guys they waited three movies [TS]

they had a two movies full [TS]

  black-and-white stormtroopers basically [TS]

and waited waited to the last movie to [TS]

pull out the red dudes and they're all [TS]

the more dramatic for it i also like [TS]

they do a good job we were talking about [TS]

the with this the hangar basing again is [TS]

that they set up for you [TS]

there's an isolette go back to the [TS]

opening shot where Darth Vader shows up [TS]

and there's like a bunch of storm [TS]

troopers and officers lined up and [TS]

really excited and when the Emperor [TS]

shows up everybody turns everybody there [TS]

like so we got tonight we've got like a [TS]

perspective for you thought you thought [TS]

there are a bunch of people waiting for [TS]

a guy to get off the shuttle last time [TS]

you ain't seen nothing yet although you [TS]

get this is the invaders appearances [TS]

like a snap inspection or it's like oh [TS]

jeez were there checking up on us [TS]

whereas with the Emperor it's like the [TS]

Pope coming to visit somewhere it's like [TS]

everybody's gonna be clean and in line [TS]

and we're all gonna be here for the [TS]

uppercut also had warning over the [TS]

Emperor yes peter has said or we'll [TS]

never get here you've got Vader kneeling [TS]

again just like an empire we have a big [TS]

tough guy from New Hope who all his boss [TS]

makes him scared so he's gonna kneel on [TS]

the hologram think talk to him an empire [TS]

and then here at when emperor comes down [TS]

the little ramp from his shuttle better [TS]

is sitting there kneeling already with [TS]

his head down you know and God and you [TS]

know what's interesting I remember as a [TS]

kid thinking like you know Darth Vader [TS]

  is is outwardly right [TS]

the really scary one but the Emperor [TS]

  because he's big [TS]

  because he's big [TS]

you can Hawking and he seems like he's [TS]

really impressive and we see him fight a [TS]

lot and the Emperor is like this wizened [TS]

old little man right and i think that [TS]

the the contrast there is really [TS]

interesting and you do get this sort of [TS]

I don't know is it anti-climactic when [TS]

you see the Emperor come and be like oh [TS]

he's just like an old dude until he [TS]

delivers a line because all these yams [TS]

are delivered with so much venom and [TS]

evil it just oozes from as far as I'm [TS]

ever been freaked out by the Emperor [TS]

when I was a girl he's scared the crap [TS]

out of me was I couldn't even look at [TS]

the action figure but I you know super [TS]

credit to even McDermott who you know [TS]

you know does show up in some other [TS]

movies later that but uh it wasn't even [TS]

  that old this one [TS]

yeah well that's the thing is I was you [TS]

always look at him and think like oh my [TS]

god he must be like the super old guy [TS]

but he was probably is like 30 days at [TS]

that point just made us to be hideously [TS]

  doesn't fan-tastic job [TS]

I mean you know he sells that he's [TS]

another one like so oily like he's just [TS]

a professional right he's just like BAM [TS]

all right you all the evil like you know [TS]

  guy fine [TS]

sign me up i'll do it like you know it's [TS]

my job is one of the few actors who can [TS]

really hone both speech and eyes where [TS]

it's just you're constantly looking into [TS]

the Emperor's eyes with every single [TS]

word he says and you're like oh god [TS]

please stop looking at me and its [TS]

delivery is very kind of affected but [TS]

like you know he doesn't just read the [TS]

lines he did I don't know if he decided [TS]

he was directed in this manner but it's [TS]

a character just based on the voice you [TS]

can have the Emperor read the back of a [TS]

cereal box and you would notice the [TS]

Emperor saying it because of the way he [TS]

says everything like is hit the choices [TS]

of how he enunciates words and what he [TS]

emphasizes and his cadence is distinctly [TS]

Emperor's almost and not a comic book a [TS]

cartoon kind of way but but in a [TS]

slightly heightened more than reality [TS]

type of way and that can very quickly go [TS]

into silly parody where you sound like a [TS]

buffoonish villain up that avoids and I [TS]

think that's avoided entirely this movie [TS]

is just scary and creeping and yes so [TS]

distinct from his brief appearance and [TS]

empire right because it's a totally [TS]

different actor and it's a fake and hows [TS]

it face and everything and I remember be [TS]

that being very confusing when I was a [TS]

kid as like I could tell the difference [TS]

right kid he looked totally different [TS]

than makeup was different the boy [TS]

so the and the sound is this the the [TS]

sound of his voices is so different that [TS]

it is like you know you have to again [TS]

with the rationalization wanted to get [TS]

just that much more evil between the [TS]

louisiana right exactly a deterrence [TS]

they tried he tried to get out of the [TS]

field to send a clear transmission but [TS]

there was still some problems [TS]

yeah sugar is the second ingredient my [TS]

young jedi these cheerios are suitable [TS]

for you haha i was trying to do the [TS]

Emperor reading a cereal box anyway um [TS]

should we move on to Yoda notice notice [TS]

you but it's just trying to get some [TS]

sleep and maybe die and and Luke just [TS]

keeps on bugging him and you cannot [TS]

watch this movie a lot when I was [TS]

  growing up [TS]

simply because i hated watching video [TS]

dying see yeah he's he's a lot [TS]

um yeah he homered in this one although [TS]

i did my favorite part of the other [TS]

  sequences talk he's he's mellow he's [TS]

dying he's talking to Luke or whatever [TS]

and then Lucas so I am a Jedi and yours [TS]

micro haha now are you have right that's [TS]

nice try kid and then the old yoda-like [TS]

he's buried in areas like coughing and [TS]

sputtering tyrick yeah that's my Empire [TS]

Yoda no more training do you require I [TS]

struck me as being like well that's [TS]

awfully sudden wasn't it just here [TS]

screwing up and he ran off and now we [TS]

doesn't need anymore even sense that we [TS]

just saw what he's capable of Vienna has [TS]

been doing some studying work at home [TS]

that it can i come effects work at home [TS]

he's got he's got the the correspondence [TS]

course in july four anyway i think i [TS]

think the university of phoenix offers a [TS]

Jedi correspondence course yeah but [TS]

that's my so I am a Jedi and then he [TS]

gets put in this place one last time [TS]

  before Yoda fades away [TS]

well I also really enjoy yoga being we'd [TS]

see you're being evasive right when he's [TS]

like yea though you know is Darth Vader [TS]

my dad you know yeah I need a nap then I [TS]

just started my sleep and i will [TS]

probably die so I don't have to answer [TS]

your awkward questions i like the fact [TS]

that he's looking away from from locally [TS]

at the camera on your energy looking [TS]

away from you told you he did [TS]

unexpected this bloody nose like that [TS]

that's a good he gets to have he gets to [TS]

have one more feisty scene where he [TS]

lasted looking as a Jedi gets to have [TS]

one more gravely serious scene where [TS]

he's kind of talking to himself and look [TS]

at the same time so even his brief [TS]

appearance here we get the the full [TS]

range of yoda well at the scene as a [TS]

hole is fantastic because i love you [TS]

know we start with sort of the is the [TS]

interplay with Luke and Yoda in terms of [TS]

him watching Yoda and Yoda's like I see [TS]

you know you're making faces [TS]

yeah I'm getting old and I again I think [TS]

handle does a really good job of selling [TS]

this sort of you know sadness of seeing [TS]

someone who is that you know your mentor [TS]

ass away basically you know waste away [TS]

in front of your eyes and and this you [TS]

know there's a lot of emotional weight [TS]

for this scene here which I think holds [TS]

up pretty well I mean as a kid you know [TS]

your sort of sad for the abstract reason [TS]

that always dying and dying is sad but [TS]

you know sort of it holds up as an adult [TS]

to watch it in sort of you know think [TS]

about the implications of of your [TS]

passing on here and I think it's [TS]

remarkably affecting for a scene again [TS]

performed by a guy using a puppet you [TS]

know AI think that the yoda the the you [TS]

know the yoda that we see here is it's [TS]

still so much more powerful than the [TS]

yoda that we see in any event any other [TS]

movies that might exist or might not [TS]

  exist [TS]

I just I don't know I think you know [TS]

Frank Oz does a fantastic job here as he [TS]

did an empire and and yet manages to do [TS]

such a stink job as as John saying like [TS]

it is a little there are some throwbacks [TS]

here to empire but at the same time this [TS]

is a different side of Yoda in some way [TS]

he said he doesn't he dies and fade to [TS]

win which at this point I remember [TS]

expecting him to fade away yeah like [TS]

he's gonna fade away like hope you want [TS]

and a lot of great another great musical [TS]

cue here yeah that when the fate of the [TS]

fadeaway happens is that like a lot of [TS]

lot of the music here i think does a [TS]

really good job of enhancing the action [TS]

and said and I guess the unkind [TS]

description would be that it's very on [TS]

the nose but i think it works for the [TS]

most part it it's you know it's like [TS]

it's like a musical salt it is it [TS]

changes the flavor by when it works it [TS]

really works like when you get [TS]

everything behind as many other later [TS]

seen the movie regions like the musical [TS]

cues line up exactly with the dramatic [TS]

things and that can be hokey but not [TS]

when your music is this good and the [TS]

moment works that it just it just makes [TS]

  it even better [TS]

did you know Two and also you know to [TS]

the credit of our camera once again I [TS]

really that last bit you know [TS]

we're Yoda's ok that is at yeah you know [TS]

which took me as a kid I was like [TS]

there's another fly flopper thanks [TS]

another butterflies water i was that I [TS]

was hanging on that because i know there [TS]

is another with the red lights from the [TS]

take what's the other yeah yeah I was [TS]

waiting years to find out what it wants [TS]

  it [TS]

you know that i love handle the rambles [TS]

reaction shot there where he's like he's [TS]

like sitting on every word and then it [TS]

takes a second for him to realize oh he [TS]

just died like your head after he gave [TS]

me this group but you can sort of see it [TS]

in his eyes widen and just be like oh oh [TS]

crap you know like and I think that's [TS]

  just a that's a [TS]

it's another remarkably powerful shot [TS]

there so after the drama of Yoda and his [TS]

  final words [TS]

Luke is preparing his x-wing to take off [TS]

and he gets a visit from ghost obi-wan [TS]

Kenobi story story time with Uncle Ben [TS]

and he managed for some reason you [TS]

wouldn't think that ghosts potato days [TS]

for schools you continue to age well it [TS]

turns out and he sits on a log coming [TS]

log because it's very tiring being a [TS]

force ghost he's gonna hat he's been [TS]

hanging out there actually my theory [TS]

about the force ghost is that they when [TS]

they're not visible time no time passes [TS]

for them so for him it's been like 10 [TS]

minutes since he got struck down the [TS]

Death Star me papa casa pushes like I'm [TS]

fine aside to let me go but he's got [TS]

he's got some splainin to do to their [TS]

  one with the force [TS]

presumably they can move things around [TS]

the yeah this is this is much less [TS]

effective than the yoda seen as much as [TS]

I love Guinness he sleepwalks through [TS]

this scene and I don't know if that's [TS]

because he's not playing it opposite [TS]

Hamill like heat if they shot it [TS]

separately take a positive men but he's [TS]

just flat through this scene for the [TS]

most part I don't like his delivery [TS]

around under the emperor has already won [TS]

because he's an example seems tired and [TS]

he got the complete lines off but a lot [TS]

of it is very you know some of this [TS]

material is not because of the fact that [TS]

he's basically the other the other great [TS]

line is like a liar here though that [TS]

mean this is the problem with it and I [TS]

am is tarnished he doesn't he's well [TS]

what I told you is true from a certain [TS]

point of view that and that's another [TS]

  great line [TS]

I love the classroom on it look awesome [TS]

on it sir its reversal of the historic [TS]

relationships where you know he had [TS]

these teachers telling him and now he's [TS]

calling them on there because they [TS]

didn't lie to him you know and it's I [TS]

think that's part of their characters [TS]

they should be a little bit troubled and [TS]

ashamed at this point you know I mean [TS]

Luke has to take this on himself you [TS]

know he's basically like you've got a [TS]

face Vader you've got to go do it we're [TS]

not here to teach you anymore and by the [TS]

way we kinda lied to you and you can [TS]

call us on it will feel kind of ashamed [TS]

but you know what kind of crappy force [TS]

is this if you guys are the sparkly [TS]

ghosts and you're lying to me [TS]

he's one of the one of the worst ghost [TS]

you know sort of reveals ever which is [TS]

the out that's why your sister remains [TS]

  safely anonymous its lair [TS]

yeah well you know dammit if i wasn't [TS]

really trying to tell Vader yeah don't [TS]

  even think it [TS]

you think about thinking I think of [TS]

  something else barium feelings [TS]

yes please pop into your head you don't [TS]

try to fit trying to think of a pink [TS]

elephant Stay Puft Marshmallow Man yeah [TS]

but we also this is also the first [TS]

reveal of Anakin Skywalker Anakin [TS]

Skywalker I remember watching this movie [TS]

going home what Skywalker huh what and [TS]

just totally missed it's like I guess [TS]

he's got a name of something thing [TS]

well my cousin had the you could save up [TS]

like your box tops or maybe Zack of the [TS]

like cancer action figure something and [TS]

send it in foreign Anakin Skywalker [TS]

figure which was like limited edition [TS]

which I remember him having as a kid [TS]

that you like couldn't get anywhere i [TS]

was the god is awesome with his helmet [TS]

off all bernos actually I think it's [TS]

either it's I think it's like the force [TS]

ghost version of him basically the end [TS]

like these little translucent or [TS]

  something [TS]

not looking like hayden christensen not [TS]

the time he was the guy who was in that [TS]

  movie shattered glass [TS]

yeah yeah we might be an interesting [TS]

start with it but it's not really acting [TS]

really what not so much it will know [TS]

that by making a perfect start with sky [TS]

don't know when we didn't even I mean [TS]

off the top we didn't even talk about [TS]

revenge of the Jedi either [TS]

yeah yeah yeah so there was the the [TS]

movie title to step with that there was [TS]

revenge of the Jedi and of course before [TS]

that it was even get was code-named [TS]

while they were shooting it [TS]

because everybody wanted to know yes you [TS]

know so they harvest the code name and [TS]

they had the t-shirts and hats and [TS]

everything made up and told everybody [TS]

was a horror film that they were making [TS]

the tag line free with the tagline [TS]

oh yeah it's something kind of helium or [TS]

something like worse than you ever [TS]

believe there's something like that [TS]

yeah i'm looking it up blue harvest and [TS]

it and then what was it was that what [TS]

was the sequence they then the people [TS]

who are making structure to the [TS]

Vengeance of Khan didn't want to be too [TS]

close to the revenge of the Jedi so they [TS]

changed it to the wrath of khan and then [TS]

George Lucas decided the jedis didn't [TS]

horror beyond imagination and eyes [TS]

  didn't do vengeance [TS]

so they changed the name to return of [TS]

the jedi and nobody right was a good [TS]

choice i have a very good choice because [TS]

revenge does not fit with this with the [TS]

feeling of this movie know and and not [TS]

  to support spoiler alert [TS]

uh the George Lucas decided that the [TS]

Sith perhaps were more appropriately [TS]

having revenge and so he just used that [TS]

title late one of my I remember again [TS]

when i got my cousins were older than I [TS]

were so they had all the awesome Star [TS]

Wars stuff but they they had a at some [TS]

point had a revenge of the Jedi poster [TS]

that I guess was a pre-release poster [TS]

but it later i think it was met with [TS]

unfortunate ends in the sense that they [TS]

didn't really take care of it but I [TS]

remember as a kid thinking that was the [TS]

coolest thing that is cool [TS]

yeah and get their revenge you're right [TS]

sweet finally been waiting three podcast [TS]

  for that [TS]
