The Incomparable

73: Ugh - A 2011 Clip Show

the incomparable contest number 7 evilly [TS]

january twenty well we are back on the [TS]

uncomfortable podcast and this is a [TS]

strange episode this is going to serve [TS]

as our look back on 2011 basically [TS]

meaning we don't have to do a new [TS]

episode this week instead were but but [TS]

here we are so it is a new episode and [TS]

if you haven't heard the episodes before [TS]

their new to you is joining me today on [TS]

this magical mystery tour our Scott [TS]

McNulty hi Scott thank you for being [TS]

here I've always wanted to be on the [TS]

clip show and now you are dude my bad [TS]

news commander Riker has been bitten by [TS]

something down on a planet as an and now [TS]

is in sickbay reliving the first season [TS]

of star trek the next generation it's [TS]

terrible i hate when he get bitten by [TS]

the clip monster or what is collector [TS]

and also that other Voice you heard is [TS]

  Steve lots [TS]

hi Steve hey Jason happy last year we [TS]

have to hear about the stupid Mayans [TS]

  yeah [TS]

hey that's right behind the last year [TS]

  ever [TS]

but when we didn't hear the Miami we [TS]

have to hear about the Mayan at the [TS]

entry here the Mayans all will climb on [TS]

to it like a boat and push off a ghost [TS]

just disappear into the sea [TS]

  I believe they're boarding a comet [TS]

wearing their Nikes excellent and purple [TS]

munchos that's right that's good [TS]

sassy yeah ah this is so the topic of [TS]

our podcast is the heavens gate doomsday [TS]

colors because he's gonna say these [TS]

  jokes are ripped-from-the-headlines [TS]

we've got ahold lemon grove california [TS]

hello you're on the air I honestly can't [TS]

remember anything that happened in 2011 [TS]

so I'm rolling it way back [TS]

that's the last year i have any [TS]

recollection of also joining me are [TS]

  serenity Caldwell [TS]

hello hello Jason and Dan Morin I'm on [TS]

this podcast you are I am [TS]

hello I'm glad so so we have we have [TS]

four people here with me to have the [TS]

podcast episode that has no topic other [TS]

  than 2011 [TS]

yes we're talking about time and we'll [TS]

also relive some exciting moments [TS]

because this is the incomparable clip [TS]

show exciting moments from the past but [TS]

before we do that I wanted to ask our [TS]

esteemed panel if they would like to [TS]

share a favorite thing from 2011 [TS]

something you discovered or enjoyed in [TS]

2011 just a single it out and give it a [TS]

little last people love before we move [TS]

into the hate and violence and horror [TS]

and torment that is 2012 [TS]

Scott what about you something you like [TS]

from 2011 I should wear I 2011 will go [TS]

  down in history [TS]

well it's got history which is a very [TS]

and focus the register yes it's true [TS]

it's a has limited appeal but it's big [TS]

in Germany as the year but I discovered [TS]

in mcdonald who is the author of the [TS]

different shall be tracked was my [TS]

  favorite novel of 2011 [TS]

I believe you mentioned that on a [TS]

previous podcast i did but i thought i'd [TS]

mention it again since i have this [TS]

  opportunity [TS]

no no Scott you're on a clip show [TS]

I believe you mentioned it on a previous [TS]

podcast I i remember incident like it [TS]

  with you [TS]

his settings are non-western which makes [TS]

it very interesting to me because it's [TS]

an alien culture and yet it's you know [TS]

still humans so in the Dervish houses [TS]

case it we get it set and in Turkey [TS]

yep in the near future and like what 20 [TS]

  40 20 30 something like that yeah it's [TS]

great because i have no idea i don't [TS]

know the cultural enough to know what is [TS]

actually current behavior I mean know [TS]

the technology of course but I don't [TS]

know what's current behavior and what's [TS]

supposed it feels it feels very genuine [TS]

so even if it's wrong and feels right [TS]

but I'm but make it into the [TS]

displacement and a travel log kind of [TS]

feel to it was like this is cool i'm [TS]

learning things that may or may not be [TS]

true but I'm i feel like i'm learning [TS]

things about Turkey and about attitude [TS]

of the Turks toured europe and then [TS]

there's the whole sci-fi element on top [TS]

of him and the the story of the the [TS]

mellah fide man I don't know that which [TS]

is which is like again i don't know if [TS]

it's true or not but it's the the heats [TS]

honey until he dies and then they put [TS]

him in a stone casket full of honey and [TS]

they stored away in the ground and he [TS]

turns it's like his body turns into [TS]

honey and then it's supposed to like [TS]

have magical healing properties of [TS]

  course i love that [TS]

word i was just like Mel ified you read [TS]

that you're just like well I want to [TS]

know what that is but I love the Jewish [TS]

now didn't you didn't you read the [TS]

Dervish house because you read another [TS]

book of his because you thought it was [TS]

required for the Dervish house which it [TS]

wasn't right i did i read the river of [TS]

God's which is a much longer book also [TS]

very good and for some reason i thought [TS]

the dermis house was a sequel to the [TS]

river of gods and it turns out they're [TS]

completely unrelated not even a little [TS]

have you read other a mcdonald this I i [TS]

did he actually he wrote a young adult [TS]

book which is came out last month maybe [TS]

december I'm was last month december i [TS]

don't know our planes runner which was [TS]

you know find it was so the thing I like [TS]

about in mcdonald is that he has in his [TS]

adult books I suppose several plots that [TS]

seemingly are unrelated and then they [TS]

come together and you go oh my god this [TS]

is a beautiful tapestry of wonderful [TS]

writing for his young adult thing he [TS]

decided I kids are stupid so let's have [TS]

one plots and lots of action and so it I [TS]

mean he's though it's it's the will [TS]

well written but it's not as complex or [TS]

as a doesn't have the depth of his other [TS]

works laughing seems like it just put [TS]

kids are stupid on the first page left [TS]

the rest blank true we summed up [TS]

existence at that point so so dan do you [TS]

have a favorite thing from 2011 [TS]

yeah a something that I didn't get to [TS]

manage mention a podcast unfortunately I [TS]

I want to kind of a clip show caster you [TS]

I i mentioned it on a future point this [TS]

is the new content but it's new to you [TS]

yes Shh you mentioned it in the future [TS]

clip I did I did [TS]

can we can we roll that clip yet what's [TS]

wrong now I was gonna say a video game I [TS]

played I played much video games here [TS]

the one that I that I found myself [TS]

returning to thinking about the most is [TS]

a game called deus ex human revolution [TS]

which is a a flawed game in many ways [TS]

but also a really fascinating game just [TS]

in terms of the world that it exposes [TS]

you to and this is a sort of a cyberpunk [TS]

near future game where a lot of people [TS]

have these human the cybernetic [TS]

  augmentation [TS]

and there's a guy i try to figure out [TS]

what I like so much about this game and [TS]

i finally watched a video online from a [TS]

I can't remember where it was but it was [TS]

hosted a penny arcade's one of the [TS]

videos they sort of do for their [TS]

rotating TV series where some people are [TS]

talking about why they thought it was [TS]

like the best game of the year and they [TS]

kept seizing upon well as you know they [TS]

were frustrating parts in the game and [TS]

they had these weird boss battles that [TS]

didn't make they were totally throwbacks [TS]

but in and of itself it provides it was [TS]

  such a case [TS]

  syntactically perfect exploration of [TS]

this world and it's so the atmosphere [TS]

and the ambience of it were so so [TS]

pervasive and so consistent that it was [TS]

really immersive and i just i found [TS]

myself caught up in this entire world [TS]

just wanted to walk around and explore [TS]

things and not even always following the [TS]

plot that was given me but also I think [TS]

I really appreciated the fact that it [TS]

took this idea of sort of branching [TS]

choices and morality in a direction that [TS]

was was much more subtle a lot of games [TS]

that they're trying to implement this [TS]

now and I think this is something going [TS]

forward this can be really important [TS]

video games is idea like you want to be [TS]

a good guide you wanna be a bad guy but [TS]

they didn't make it into this like do [TS]

you want to save all these people or do [TS]

you want to kill all these people it [TS]

  wasn't a heavy-handed choice there was a [TS]

there's a point very early in the game [TS]

where you have to get into a police [TS]

department and you're a former cop and [TS]

so you stopping you you talking to the [TS]

guy at the desk was the guy you served [TS]

with and depending on how you approach [TS]

  it [TS]

there are a number of ways to accomplish [TS]

that objective and I chose to do it by [TS]

serving really sympathetic but this guy [TS]

who's been sort of fallen from grace and [TS]

you know had this terrible experience [TS]

and is oh my i played the character very [TS]

sympathetic and the guy was modified and [TS]

eventually let me and my friend Jason [TS]

Tasi who is also appeared on this [TS]

podcast took the entire opposite tack he [TS]

browbeat the guy into letting him in and [TS]

in a normal game you know me you might [TS]

think that's that's sort of interesting [TS]

you can approach those two ways but it [TS]

struck me later in the game as you're [TS]

  exiting your apartment I hadn't it's a [TS]

second encounter with the guy works at [TS]

all you know i decided to leave police [TS]

department i was i just wasn't feeling [TS]

it didn't feel like I felt that you know [TS]

fit in there anymore and I said hello [TS]

let me get you a job i put in your name [TS]

or something so that'd be great [TS]

Jason least his apartment and the guy [TS]

tries to kill it is like you ruined my [TS]

life and tries to shoot when I was like [TS]

we and so neither of us knew about this [TS]

until we discuss was like wow that [TS]

that's fascinating these little like [TS]

things you set in motion and then later [TS]

on they have these huge you know little [TS]

implications or whatever and and it was [TS]

just it was a great game i really [TS]

enjoyed playing it and despite its flaws [TS]

i just found it was one of my favorite [TS]

  things this year [TS]

alright that's great uh miss Caldwell do [TS]

you have a favorite thing my favorite [TS]

thing is is is broad and specific at the [TS]

same time which is just new things in [TS]

general I mean no this isn't yeah new [TS]

things are great this was taking a [TS]

letter here that last year's new things [TS]

we're good that 2010 things suck though [TS]

there yeah i was awarded more than old [TS]

things here now but I mean to elaborate [TS]

a little bit more on that in 2007 I did [TS]

this thing where i basically i looked at [TS]

what i was reading and I looked at what [TS]

i was watching and and basically said [TS]

you know alright i have i have a certain [TS]

amount of literature that I wanted my [TS]

belt but here it is here some books that [TS]

i really want to read and hear some [TS]

movies that i really want to watch and I [TS]

just lock myself up in a room for a [TS]

while in 2007 and did all that and 2011 [TS]

was a another similar year where I went [TS]

through a lot of content that I'd never [TS]

seen before I went through a bunch of TV [TS]

shows that I had been told repeatedly to [TS]

watch like Veronica Mars and party down [TS]

and buffy and supernatural thanks Dan [TS]

and you know so I television shows yeah [TS]

yeah she did sound that enthused when [TS]

  she said things [TS]

uh-huh well it did take whatever and yes [TS]

seasons to slog through i should point [TS]

out but the lightning it's a delightful [TS]

romp it ruined your 2011 to romp through [TS]

the fields of of undead things I but I [TS]

mean aside from television shows i mean [TS]

i saw real genius for the first time I [TS]

bring yeah I blame the podcast for a lot [TS]

of it because having book club and [TS]

having you know our regular television [TS]

until talking about TV shows and talking [TS]

about movies and books like that it [TS]

gives me a reason beyond I need to be [TS]

more literate and I need to find more [TS]

things to inhale into my brain [TS]

I gives me an additional yes I know [TS]

and inhale and my brain maybe not the [TS]

best word choice but you know anyway [TS]

learning new things is fun and in 2011 I [TS]

did a lot of that who all right [TS]

was there any new thing in particular [TS]

that struck your fancy more than the [TS]

others or is it just all new things are [TS]

  good [TS]

that's a good question i was really [TS]

happy to have seen short circuit for the [TS]

first time because I i adore robots and [TS]

robot movies and I hadn't seen this one [TS]

before and books wise I finally sat down [TS]

and read myself some neal stephenson and [TS]

I had been putting it off for ages and [TS]

I'm very very glad that I finally got [TS]

around to it sort of ice and fire maybe [TS]

not so much but else even I will count [TS]

  as a win [TS]

alright that's great I Steve what about [TS]

  you [TS]

well I 2 i'm going to tout the joys of [TS]

new things in the same way that that Ren [TS]

appreciates them which is to say I have [TS]

a very old thing that I would like to [TS]

talk about because as you know perhaps [TS]

you figured out from my discussion of [TS]

the heavens gate guys earlier how my [TS]

life is basically a tivo that's running [TS]

about 10 years back so this year I [TS]

finally got around to watching a film [TS]

that people have been recommending to me [TS]

for the better part of a decade [TS]

it's a japanese film that's that hails [TS]

from around 2000 and finally had a spare [TS]

moment i was sitting there with the DVD [TS]

and I said let's watch this [TS]

so I finally put on battle royale nice [TS]

which no doubt you know I'm sure that [TS]

most of you have probably absorbed [TS]

already i have not yet an email back [TS]

into my brain oh well you [TS]

yes it's a good it's a good inhale you [TS]

should really have you have you read the [TS]

hunger games because this is better [TS]

right that's another reason why I'm [TS]

bringing it up is because my wife read [TS]

The Hunger Games and she was describing [TS]

the plot to me and I was thinking that [TS]

sounds an awful lot like the plot battle [TS]

royale so it's it's topical even though [TS]

its ancient so yeah basically the film [TS]

is a is about a a dystopian future where [TS]

the children have rebelled and have no [TS]

  respect for [TS]

our elders and it sounds like a stretch [TS]

but but it happens and apparently the [TS]

solution to this is the Japanese [TS]

government each year sequester's a kind [TS]

of its high school but whatever their [TS]

final their final year of schooling is [TS]

in Japan takes one class and they [TS]

sequester them on a deserted island and [TS]

they basically tell them you know one of [TS]

you can survive at the end of three days [TS]

and they give each of them a random [TS]

weapon i think one guy has like a pot [TS]

lid whereas it and somebody else [TS]

randomly ends up with a chainsaw and the [TS]

guy has an Uzi sony has a stun gun and [TS]

basically their dispatch to to dispatch [TS]

each other and if there's not one person [TS]

standing if there are multiple people [TS]

standing on the final day than everybody [TS]

dies it's never really explained how [TS]

this is supposed to cause the youth to [TS]

fall into line since apparently this [TS]

class was totally unaware of the [TS]

existence of this this annual event so [TS]

there are some plot holes at any rate [TS]

  it's a it's a heck of a ride had is it [TS]

set in Japan or just the Japanese [TS]

government come to America and take the [TS]

students at the moment it is in fact [TS]

said in Japan that's really huh that [TS]

makes its yeah it's a heck of a ride [TS]

it's got liberal keepings of Japanese [TS]

over-the-top sort of cartoonish core [TS]

although not as bad as some films and [TS]

I've seen like itchy the killer and a [TS]

few others and it has some interesting [TS]

sort of poignant satire in it as well [TS]

although I'm not sure I understand more [TS]

than maybe a third of it there are a lot [TS]

of sort of recurring scenes from from [TS]

the past of the how the students [TS]

interacted with each other at school and [TS]

in some background as to why certain of [TS]

the students become just utterly [TS]

psychopathic and and seemed to take joy [TS]

and trying to kill their fellow students [TS]

and others can try to band together and [TS]

in sort of form a society or so it's [TS]

like lost except everybody kills each [TS]

other more or less yes they're all [TS]

they're all teenagers but it's a really [TS]

good film and and surprisingly moving in [TS]

  places and [TS]

and I don't get all right and since I [TS]

didn't actually consume anything from [TS]

  2011 in 2011 [TS]

that's my pick for 2011 that is fine but [TS]

it's a new thing perfectly acceptable [TS]

pick in New Year's thing Jason may ask [TS]

what was your was your favorite thing [TS]

for 2011 why thank you for asking damn i [TS]

don't want to i'd like to know I way [TS]

home we're out of time I'm sorry for [TS]

this next time I guess real genius [TS]

that's my favorite thing for all eras [TS]

ever but in if I had to narrow down to [TS]

2011 I I think the thing that I enjoy [TS]

  the most [TS]

which surprises me when I was coming [TS]

down a list of stuff I liked is the HBO [TS]

TV series Game of Thrones which I [TS]

enjoyed a lot and having read those [TS]

books i was very impressed at how good [TS]

job they did in translating it into a TV [TS]

series that was both faithful to the [TS]

books and yet not so slavishly faithful [TS]

that they didn't work as individual TV [TS]

episodes and as a whatever was 10 [TS]

episode story arc the you know the [TS]

special effects were effective the [TS]

acting was good the writing was good it [TS]

could have been a train wreck and [TS]

instead i think it was one of the better [TS]

TV shows of the year and and so I really [TS]

enjoyed game of thrones in the in the [TS]

book category i can throw in somebody [TS]

asked me what my favorite book of the [TS]

year was I think it's probably among [TS]

others which I mentioned on the podcast [TS]

a while back by Joe Walton which I know [TS]

Scott read it and liked it too [TS]

I finally just I finally figured out a [TS]

way to describe what this book is it's a [TS]

fantasy novel about science fiction and [TS]

it's and and it's also about a Welsh [TS]

schoolgirl going to a an English private [TS]

school and it's it's great and strange [TS]

and not what you'd expect and i'm sure [TS]

there are lots of people out there who [TS]

hated because sort of on one level [TS]

nothing happens in it and yet it's great [TS]

and and then if I threw another pick for [TS]

a young adult that i read that i really [TS]

liked would be ship breaker by paulo [TS]

basico loopy who wrote the windup girl [TS]

which I liked in 2010 and this is an [TS]

older I think this is for also from 2010 [TS]

but uh as as the young adult novels go [TS]

it's actually kind of a shame that it [TS]

  isn't more well-known it's a really [TS]

well-executed fun adventure story that [TS]

also has its own you know take on [TS]

environmental consequences and you could [TS]

have wrecked oil tankers figure in the [TS]

plot and it was really good too so but [TS]

if I had to pick one i think i think i'd [TS]

actually picked game of thrones much to [TS]

my own surprise now I this is the [TS]

portion of the program where I'd like to [TS]

  share some listener feedback [TS]

  oh I I didn't I didn't sign up for that [TS]

are you aware that there are listeners [TS]

to this podcast and we know my words [TS]

against tax basat yeah besides you go I [TS]

  gotta go [TS]

I was that correct me if I'm wrong jason [TS]

but it is my understanding that there [TS]

were there were more listeners before a [TS]

podcast that we entitled Stephen Fry [TS]

  does not appear [TS]

oh and then after that it that number [TS]

sort of dropped off sharply we had to [TS]

rebuild our listenership alligator we [TS]

have to make it stronger cousin so the [TS]

Stephen Pryor fri podcast is what [TS]

happened when we basically got like five [TS]

members of the incomparable in a room [TS]

together and close the door and it was a [TS]

very small room with no air and over the [TS]

course of an hour we became increasingly [TS]

loopy and and we discussed about 20 or [TS]

50 or 90 topics and about an hour and [TS]

none of it made any sense [TS]

that did not met never ever left down [TS]

wow you're like this is like the swerve [TS]

easiest podcast ever issue what we'd [TS]

only been drinking would have a much [TS]

  more sense [TS]

ya know we've already men that are I [TS]

think something called all the time I've [TS]

recommended our listeners drink before [TS]

the same I think you should put a recipe [TS]

at the outset of this please pour for [TS]

  example martini [TS]

this is the incomparable after dark that [TS]

was not Muslim you know locked in a room [TS]

Stephen Fry no longer live TV show [TS]

called a bit of fry and laurie at the [TS]

end of each other with you Lori to be [TS]

more he has done your house you won t be [TS]

one of America's finest actors and [TS]

please sing it's not really anybody been [TS]

imitating trumpet very convincing yes [TS]

and they always serve a drink what shall [TS]

we order for the drink can dissolve i'll [TS]

have the hat tricks like all you take [TS]

three pounds of dried ice shavings and [TS]

arsenic mixing together and Shake and [TS]

Shake swell mr. music plays and that's [TS]

what I cannot believe that you brought [TS]

it around to stephen fry again there [TS]

that is I Williams processing plant I am [TS]

amazed by then it's stephen fry did not [TS]

appear never did Elizabeth great find [TS]

when we could still breathe [TS]

yeah I member and not so much after we [TS]

were all about to die so you're more or [TS]

less inhaling each other in the [TS]

  operations [TS]

yeah and you can hear it's all it's [TS]

there on the tape if you play it back [TS]

you can you was that the episode where [TS]

Lex Friedman was joking and jokingly [TS]

laughing at all of our misfortunes in [TS]

  the background [TS]

yeah he was our studio audience for that [TS]

poor bastard he was using up the oxygen [TS]

we should have kicked him out so well I [TS]

don't have any listener feedback about [TS]

the stephen fry episode because really [TS]

nobody listened to it because it was [TS]

unlistenable but i do have some [TS]

interesting i asked on the incomparable [TS]

twitter account at the incomparable [TS]

follow that by the way if you aren't [TS]

already it's full of fans doing it right [TS]

  now [TS]

what is that no at the incomparable that [TS]

I asked i asked the listeners on twitter [TS]

if they have any favorite uncomfortable [TS]

moments from 2011 and here are some of [TS]

the responses i got listener [TS]

chris said John siracusa covertly [TS]

reconstructing the Firefly Firefly cast [TS]

  from discarded part [TS]

mr. Adam similarly said easy [TS]

Syracuse's sneaky lightning but direct [TS]

pic with accompanying see lawyer and [TS]

over Han Solo status as a TV character [TS]

holiday hon or my fifth round pick [TS]

John Syracuse's selects on solo from the [TS]

  star wars holiday special [TS]

oh I almost went there [TS]

judges charges and i quote from the [TS]

rules that a good time that with any TV [TS]

  show ever [TS]

true it counts so does that mean life [TS]

day will feature prominently in your [TS]

thinking the character of Han Solo he [TS]

has an established character from the [TS]

movies yes but he appeared on television [TS]

in that which is any TV show ever in the [TS]

history of TV the exact words from the [TS]

email i'll allow it i'll allow it but it [TS]

but there's there's got to be a [TS]

holiday-themed he always has to remark [TS]

about wiki holiday is I like that rule [TS]

is that where you're at santa hat for [TS]

the whole thing it does not in Star Wars [TS]

and if he shoots first he uses a candy [TS]

cane it's 500 years in the future [TS]

mankind has slipped the surly bonds of [TS]

Earth is spread across the galaxy thanks [TS]

to a repulsion breakthrough that [TS]

  harnesses the powerful electrostatic [TS]

discharges founded the atmospheres of [TS]

gas giant planets yes that'll make sense [TS]

a planetary government controls most of [TS]

the civilized plants but on the more [TS]

outer rim planets let's say government [TS]

authorities less potent on solo is the [TS]

captain of a starship and a smuggler [TS]

surprise river song is the [TS]

second-in-command a tough competently he [TS]

knows their way around a gun an old war [TS]

buddy of Hans its pilot and trusted [TS]

friend Hank Stallworth a ruffled [TS]

good-natured fellow will also happens to [TS]

be riversong husband jay-z Steiners [TS]

ships mechanic she's young and innocent [TS]

but with a hydrospanner James Ford is a [TS]

hired gun he's great in a fight but the [TS]

others on the crew not are not sure that [TS]

he can be trusted your own higher Harris [TS]

is a high-class corazon tagging along [TS]

and hardship for transport and [TS]

protections her presence lends an air of [TS]

legitimacy to another wise ragtag crew [TS]

but there's definitely some sexual [TS]

tension between jones scruffy-looking on [TS]

into the life of this crew falls Jack [TS]

  Shephard a doctor [TS]

one of the civilized planet mr. myko [TS]

from the government but would explain [TS]

why Tywin Lannister's the government [TS]

officer in charge of apprehending Jaco [TS]

and he has no trouble going through some [TS]

anti-government rebels come to get what [TS]

  he wants [TS]

finally at the far reaches of the known [TS]

plants like the nomadic tribes known as [TS]

the Horde by Khal Drogo Oh even [TS]

government ships hear them together on [TS]

his crew flip from planet to planet in [TS]

the tiny spaceship making a dishonest [TS]

living as smugglers what they avoid any [TS]

Imperial entanglements and steer clear [TS]

of the hoard all still trying to be the [TS]

good guys in the movie of their lives [TS]

there on ship crushes the trails heist [TS]

of the week episodes and remote planets [TS]

and overall story are concerning the [TS]

mysterious backstory of jackin echo the [TS]

show's title is the name of hardship the [TS]

lightning bug well and we grow now [TS]

really it's gonna make a million dollars [TS]

well I never heard of anything like this [TS]

before I have a feeling that this show [TS]

will be canceled after 13 episodes only [TS]

10 of which will air not not in the [TS]

correct i'm not even in correct order [TS]

wow so I have nothing to say to that I [TS]

executed the plan not very creative but [TS]

it's kind of like like a pet cemetery [TS]

when the dad really wants a little boy [TS]

to come back to life so he uses dark [TS]

magic antenna and reanimates the corpse [TS]

that's what I've done here I'm still [TS]

  upset about that [TS]

that's ok that's ok move on there was no [TS]

life day mentioned at all in the [TS]

lightning bug pitch as i recall it's [TS]

  shameful wrong [TS]

so listen Laurie liked the cancelled TV [TS]

show draft but she says the TV character [TS]

draft made her laugh from beginning to [TS]

end so i guess my favorite moment steve [TS]

was the drafting of Skeletor yes mr. [TS]

Janus said I laughed so much of the [TS]

character draft that my sister thought i [TS]

  was nuts [TS]

  well there's a good chance you're [TS]

welcome mr. Chad road in simply saying [TS]

Skeletor i must needs to be sick [TS]

well i'm gonna go with one that's a [TS]

that's close to my heart for various [TS]

reasons and I know somebody's just [TS]

raring to pick him so I better grab him [TS]

now i'm going to pick a pic Skeletor [TS]

from the last of the universe seems yeah [TS]

i do not think you should be on the show [TS]

with Tom servo well the beauty of [TS]

Skeletor is that he can die every [TS]

weekend yet miraculously reappear from [TS]

under the pile of rocks that he was [TS]

buried under in subsequent hooks so if [TS]

Anthony tries to send Skeletor the [TS]

cornfield what happens is back to the [TS]

  next week [TS]

that's the intention of the show's [TS]

spoilers no spoilers alright okay so [TS]

  you're you're pretty girly it's crucial [TS]

to my plot which which I look forward to [TS]

making up on the candle [TS]

yeah that's appropriate it its Skeletor [TS]

is the alpha and the omega of our [TS]

podcast he won that draft by killing [TS]

  everyone else so scary [TS]

in addition to the TV drafts wear it in [TS]

which mr. Lutz had the best pic and one [TS]

the pitch session after all of that you [TS]

were also steve the master of trash talk [TS]

i believe i believe telling me to eat it [TS]

in the classic dual image which actually [TS]

I think we may have been John Syracuse's [TS]

  favorite moment of people [TS]

well you know every village needs its [TS]

  idiot [TS]

so I've been happy to provide that role [TS]

you got me Steve nice the bed liners in [TS]

the cornfield with Anthony now eat it [TS]

smells all right I'm gonna trash-talk [TS]

  alright it's getting good [TS]

normally I would reserve that for the [TS]

chat window well played it again Snell [TS]

oh man so you will each I mean it when I [TS]

  say it's now [TS]

  yes no that's that's Steve's line i [TS]

recommend it it's it's highly [TS]

  questionable say it [TS]

that's right mr. mark rhodium that it's [TS]

a tie between the TV draft and pitch [TS]

please do that again he says huh [TS]

okay i think people will have a license [TS]

revoked if we if we do that again thank [TS]

you i will be draft and the i think i [TS]

think we should do a favorite movie drop [TS]

that would be good and the empire [TS]

strikes back to partner he also liked [TS]

listen risk mr. chris l wrote in and [TS]

said both the two-part draft pick and [TS]

pitch and the two-part star wars were [TS]

  golden [TS]

so people like the star wars episodes [TS]

Adam wrote in and said he thought the [TS]

Empire Strikes Back episode was [TS]

incomparable haha there that doesn't [TS]

mean good Jason let's just be clear [TS]

yes it's well it's not necessarily [TS]

conveying a value judgment of any kind [TS]

listener Brandon wrote in and said [TS]

empire strikes back all the way listener [TS]

David wrote in and said to come to mind [TS]

  episode 59 1 episode is 59 I don't [TS]

actually read the tip and the tail end [TS]

of the TV draft and the Empire Strikes [TS]

Back series especially the after dark [TS]

the where we were we talked about the [TS]

empire strikes back for an extra 20 [TS]

minutes after having board everybody to [TS]

death already and this says about about [TS]

things notice how they're not saying the [TS]

star wars two-parter they're saying the [TS]

Empire to know someone said the star [TS]

wars 2 part that I think I think they [TS]

mean the Empire to partner Dan let's [TS]

just face it the empire strikes back [TS]

it's just a vote in the sweet spot me a [TS]

favor just if I might recall where you [TS]

were you on the Star Wars two-parter I [TS]

  was not [TS]

oh yeah so you know what is a no one [TS]

could possibly say that is what youre so [TS]

the reason the star wars episode i think [TS]

it's so touching is because you know we [TS]

we learned so many things in the star [TS]

wars episode we learned that start [TS]

seeing Star Wars can change your life [TS]

and we also learned about the coffee [TS]

  drinking habit [TS]

darth vader that is true my my life [TS]

exists in into separate dimensions one [TS]

pre star wars and one post Star Wars it [TS]

was the transformative experience I I [TS]

was nine years old when Star Wars was [TS]

released and I saw at nine times during [TS]

its initial theatrical run i was just [TS]

totally blown away by everything in it [TS]

was it was perfect in every way and i [TS]

still believe that and I will argue it [TS]

with anybody who wants to that it is it [TS]

remains perfect despite its flaws [TS]

it is the Socratic ideal of what a [TS]

science-fiction movie should be so what [TS]

you're saying is even its flaws are part [TS]

of its reaction that exactly it would it [TS]

it is perfect because of its flaws [TS]

that's for old people like me and Greg [TS]

that's um that's such a strange idea the [TS]

idea that star wars was always there [TS]

I have to think that it would be a [TS]

little disappointing having it always [TS]

around because you didn't get to [TS]

discover it didn't like up here you know [TS]

dawn i might argue that that as as as [TS]

your idea Greg that star wars a Socratic [TS]

ideal in some ways up hasn't it always [TS]

  been there [TS]

we just didn't know it's been inside of [TS]

us it was inside the block of marble it [TS]

was a long time ago in a galaxy far far [TS]

away you don't use the word faith there [TS]

to find his lack of faith disturbing [TS]

I want you need to have faith i'm [TS]

choking you dude you don't have to [TS]

believe believe that I believe it may go [TS]

  Greg can you explain [TS]

can you explain the darth vader coffee [TS]

thing by the way for those who don't [TS]

know because this is one of my favorite [TS]

things about the original star wars in [TS]

the comic version there's the conference [TS]

room scene where they're discussing how [TS]

the plans got away and who's to blame [TS]

and your ancient religion blah blah blah [TS]

and it just as as the people are talking [TS]

around the table Vader floats over a [TS]

Styrofoam cup of coffee and a little yes [TS]

how does he drink it [TS]

yes I don't know using the force and [TS]

then United States he's holding it for [TS]

the rest of the scene including on shoka [TS]

  together [TS]

need to do all the only thing that would [TS]

have been awesome about that is it well [TS]

to give you guys something of a copy [TS]

then throws it in his face installed [TS]

that would be hilarious you should have [TS]

been quietly sipping through his helmet [TS]

while choking the guy that's the dark [TS]

side band confidence for chokers Vader [TS]

doesn't put the cream in his coffee by [TS]

the way he likes it black takes that [TS]

black just like you like I like my [TS]

coffee like my like my evil select [TS]

myself Lords I really should have been [TS]

on the real genius episode back job man [TS]

  yeah I know I I made it I made a [TS]

horrible mistake with that episode it [TS]

was I booked the wrong guests I I needed [TS]

more people on my side [TS]

it happens i went for diversity instead [TS]

of a monoculture that would agree with [TS]

  me like that lesson [TS]

yeah it's very strange to me that so [TS]

there's so much love for the TV draft [TS]

episodes when we were all convinced that [TS]

that was going to be the second coming [TS]

of the stephen fry said I after we [TS]

posted the TV draft episode I really [TS]

they were evenings when I would look out [TS]

my window just to make sure that the [TS]

torches and pitchforks poured out there [TS]

you know if I had it all to do over [TS]

again I think I would do it differently [TS]

are those was that serious wow maybe a [TS]

little little little muslim are you [TS]

expecting us to create a flashback were [TS]

either a song that's about to start that [TS]

  goes with that [TS]

well I drafted a bunch of vampire [TS]

detective and I have no I have no more [TS]

than that sign but even greater problems [TS]

don't seem dry so so more comments about [TS]

Star Wars listener Ryan said Star Wars [TS]

of course now John siracusa must turn [TS]

his lecture like I on episodes one [TS]

through three and he specifies the [TS]

analytical Hannibal Lecter not the [TS]

murderer apartment kind of like I i did [TS]

you get to choose which part of him and [TS]

passage deal i can guess which part [TS]

John would choose to inflict on the [TS]

prequels too and it's not the analytical [TS]

part it's the murder part i see but [TS]

here's the thing if you would just be [TS]

two hours of Dijon saying I don't know [TS]

what movie you're talking about [TS]

it's true that movie existed really is [TS]

his power of self-delusion is great [TS]

you know considering the impact that [TS]

ripples had on Star Wars fans i would [TS]

say that those two were life-changing [TS]

films troops in a different in a [TS]

different sort of way in a vastly [TS]

different sort of way if I could do it [TS]

all over again I think I would do it [TS]

  differently [TS]

mr. Matt throat and said that a episode [TS]

67 68 where the best of the year where [TS]

siracusa got down on Empire Strikes Back [TS]

my favorite moment from this episode yes [TS]

I am bleeding into a clip here is when [TS]

John Syracuse's summed up Han Solo's [TS]

character in just a few seconds the [TS]

character is established to immediately [TS]

fired his weapon upon seeing the enemy [TS]

the only reason he didn't immediately [TS]

shoot gritos gonna get the jump on them [TS]

and had the gun grunting him first and [TS]

he had to talk while he got his general [TS]

Han shoots first for crying out loud he [TS]

doesn't he doesn't even like Chewie [TS]

growls at least on just immediately [TS]

fires and draws his fast again doesn't [TS]

fire once you just aim shoot kill kill [TS]

  kill [TS]

that's hot that's hot solo in that scene [TS]

he is a mayor and of action on solo and [TS]

shoots first people John kill cancerous [TS]

he's succinct yeah yeah but general [TS]

member Hannibal Lecter saying something [TS]

very similar in yeah it's somewhat more [TS]

eloquent my generally in the Empire [TS]

podcast there were some serious nerdery [TS]

going on between Dan and John no I find [TS]

that uh yeah I was nerded out I thought [TS]

I knew a lot but it's a bit of romance [TS]

I just have a curiosity everything from [TS]

your guy's perspective how many days do [TS]

  you think he's there [TS]

not that long maybe like oh we're trying [TS]

to calculate based on like how long they [TS]

spent running away from the the fuckin [TS]

  Spencer anyway [TS]

yeah you don't know how long it took [TS]

them to fly without warp speed 22 miles [TS]

to Cloud City exactly i mean it seems [TS]

like not more than a few days though [TS]

right they make it seem like it's not [TS]

long but I better be like a week yeah [TS]

they spend a week running away from the [TS]

empire but they were they spend a week [TS]

fly they couldn't they couldn't go to [TS]

light speed and takes awhile to get [TS]

around you also don't know how long they [TS]

were sitting on the back of the Star [TS]

Destroyer until they get dumped off for [TS]

track because you see them there and [TS]

it's all dark and you're like you know [TS]

what's our next move that could hang out [TS]

  there for a while I i don't know i [TS]

always seems to me like three or four [TS]

days and like man that's a that's a very [TS]

short time to cram in your Jedi training [TS]

it does seem faster in the movie like [TS]

this look what exactly how much Jedi [TS]

training to look actually get but I [TS]

think even if you think it's only been a [TS]

  few days [TS]

it shows he looks like someone who's had [TS]

like a three day course on you know [TS]

professional driving and now he's not [TS]

camp Jedi boot camp right and and has [TS]

not absorbed it's like if you took a [TS]

  three-day professional driving course [TS]

such as our weekend really well yeah [TS]

  he's a Jedi weekend warrior yah-yah-yah [TS]

dress venue and I had to basically stand [TS]

on the sidelines while while damage on [TS]

just listed all the things they loved [TS]

about the empire strikes back [TS]

yeah we we get our mouths open and then [TS]

John when ordered and will put it more [TS]

succinctly and then and then we go back [TS]

to our caves and be like yeah i really [TS]

love that movie to be there we really [TS]

  love that movie [TS]

like a lot yeah I give it was legal in [TS]

my state to marry that movie [TS]

yeah i think it is it matches [TS]

Massachusetts were very liberal true [TS]

then you and John would have to fight [TS]

over who married that movie [TS]

  oh I'm sure it's a slippery slope it's [TS]

great just maybe both married in three [TS]

two people in the movie are all married [TS]

together and it's it is madness dr. now [TS]

  it's a sitcom sitcom there's yeah [TS]

there's the start of values conquers all [TS]

so mr. Clinton wrote in and said he [TS]

liked the star wars podcast but he also [TS]

specifically like to single out the [TS]

doctor who episodes and our review of [TS]

feed you see some people love it when we [TS]

are critical Scott well that's good [TS]

because that book is crap [TS]

let's relive just how bad that book is [TS]

feed by mira Grant who read fee i did [TS]

mean for child and neither of us like to [TS]

feed is is a novel about bloggers yes [TS]

who are essentially news reporters of [TS]

the future and this is set in the near [TS]

future as well where technology is a [TS]

little more advanced also there's been a [TS]

zombie apocalypse and everybody who dies [TS]

becomes a zombie and if you get bitten [TS]

if by a zombie you die and then your [TS]

zombie and an interesting i think that [TS]

her world building was interesting so [TS]

you can also since the the whatever the [TS]

the zombie particle or whatever you [TS]

wanna call it is been around it has not [TS]

a virus yet the virus that's probably [TS]

better is it so it's in everyone and it [TS]

can just spontaneously activate so you [TS]

don't have to be bitten by a zombie you [TS]

could just spontaneously turn into a [TS]

zombie and animals also turned into [TS]

zombies over 40 pounds or something so [TS]

right there's like there's a law that [TS]

  you can't have a pet that's over 40 [TS]

pounds because it could spontaneously [TS]

turn into like a zombie my Marmaduke but [TS]

think how Bad's on be like mosquitoes [TS]

would be slung be one rat that's why you [TS]

can't do that yet so but zombie horses [TS]

yes this was really not very good know [TS]

it was you mean it would have had [TS]

  bringing an endorsement [TS]

I cannot believe I actually i look at [TS]

this and think how did this get [TS]

  nominated for hugo award [TS]

I don't understand a world where this [TS]

book and the Dervish house can be [TS]

considered in the same group [TS]

it's just the gap is so why don't [TS]

  understand it [TS]

so Dan and Glenn what what can I tell [TS]

you you gotta reach yeah I'm gonna take [TS]

  an article [TS]

oh I'm gonna go right out i'm so glad [TS]

that I didn't just like go on mute for [TS]

this then come back and guys like a [TS]

  totally repeat happy [TS]

sucker and the best part is it's the [TS]

first book in a trilogy so [TS]

oh of course after i love it i love [TS]

however scott i had hate to break it to [TS]

  you [TS]

some people also hate it when we are [TS]

critical listener ash road in and said [TS]

the most infuriating episode was when [TS]

you ravage the best book of the year [TS]

ready player one I have a special i have [TS]

  a message [TS]

I i assume listener ashes illiterate [TS]

because then that book is also crap that [TS]

as much crap as feed i will give him at [TS]

still crap i read the that doesn't I'm [TS]

sample and I felt illiterate after [TS]

finishing just an efficient i think [TS]

that's an episode like the real genius [TS]

episode i think that's an episode with a [TS]

host Letta let the guests get away from [TS]

get wet get away from him now I think [TS]

that hosted an excellent job I i would [TS]

say he was one of the best host of the [TS]

year everything about this book is is [TS]

basically a trope right like the plot [TS]

the characters and the amaj and I guess [TS]

you know it seems like it's one of those [TS]

situations that should be a perfect [TS]

storm of things that people like and yet [TS]

it doesn't quite seem to succeed just [TS]

immune it doesn't have that one thing [TS]

that people like which is a story is a [TS]

story that keeps them guessing and I [TS]

mean like with fine pandered to whatever [TS]

but you want to you want to be kept like [TS]

I'm i was going to the story but it was [TS]

just you just saw where was going in [TS]

there isn't much surprised that's why [TS]

the pacman steam so it out so much [TS]

because there was so little in this [TS]

thing that you knew I'd like in a movie [TS]

that you know anything they show you [TS]

it's like a wall that's going to be [TS]

significant is probably gonna save them [TS]

in the end that because no one else is [TS]

doing it like there wasn't enough stuff [TS]

for it because it like a good mystery [TS]

even a short little mystery novel that [TS]

mean enough stuff going on that you can [TS]

immediately pick out haha when that guy [TS]

came into the room put that thing down [TS]

that was important because so much other [TS]

stuff happens in the story and you [TS]

wrapped up in the people in this thing [TS]

it was just everything was just poking [TS]

up out of the the ground really tall [TS]

appears this tower which is this plot [TS]

point this tower which is this plot [TS]

point and it wasn't any meat on the [TS]

bones you know that it's a new overclock [TS]

processor that's so fast its cycle time [TS]

  board on [TS]

precognition first of all overclocking [TS]

that was like so two decades ago and [TS]

cycle time board its recognition make no [TS]

sense but like I asked my mother to [TS]

write a sentence about how fast the cpu [TS]

I'm glad we didn't get any comments from [TS]

people who said I'll i really like the [TS]

episodes where people who are Jason [TS]

hosted at least in getting episodes [TS]

where they're like I really hated the [TS]

people who subbed in for Jason cuz that [TS]

make me said I liked the episode where [TS]

Glenn breathe a lot thank you enough [TS]

so let them roll the clip you know so [TS]

critical i mean we are we are sometimes [TS]

critical and some people hate that and [TS]

some people like it we don't try to tear [TS]

everything down every week i mean i [TS]

think that reaction of the star wars [TS]

episode shows that people also enjoy it [TS]

when we talk about things we love and so [TS]

it's it's hard to strike a balance I had [TS]

somebody on Twitter the other day said [TS]

that we were all a bunch of a bunch of [TS]

pedis and infrared yeah that's that's [TS]

John job but the rest of us are are are [TS]

are much more kind of you know we love [TS]

things we hate things and that's okay i [TS]

think criticism is good is good to share [TS]

and sometimes we hate things and talk [TS]

about why we hate them but that's not [TS]

all we also love things we hate the dark [TS]

night though nobody likes the dark [TS]

ok we destroyed that that's ahead movie [TS]

held in high regard high regard but what [TS]

we did we toured that into little tiny [TS]

pieces i think i think i missed out on [TS]

that 1i might have defended who ya [TS]

always something that was the superhero [TS]

movie episode where you I was i believe [TS]

i was absent a little i would i would [TS]

argue that were united air [TS]

let's check the tape oh let's go to the [TS]

  videotape [TS]

overrated is the dark knight not because [TS]

it's such a terrible movie because it [TS]

isn't terrible is a superhero movie that [TS]

tries to have everything in it you know [TS]

great acting dramatic fight scenes and [TS]

amazing villain and every possible [TS]

scenario you can imagine for the villain [TS]

to go in a you know a love story the [TS]

loss of a main character revenge and it [TS]

just it just ends up being too much the [TS]

dark knight is a great great movie for [TS]

about sixty percent and then it just [TS]

doesn't end it keeps going keeps trying [TS]

to have more and it it goes off the [TS]

rails at the end I don't wanna I don't [TS]

want to draw a parallel between the dark [TS]

knight and batman returns the second of [TS]

the tim burton Batman's which is a far [TS]

Batman Returns far inferior to the dark [TS]

knight i would say the dark knight is a [TS]

good movie it's just horribly overrated [TS]

but they are similar in that both of [TS]

them the first movie was successful had [TS]

a lot of constraints that I think may [TS]

have made them successful and then they [TS]

took all the constraints off and and the [TS]

with batman returns it was really like [TS]

okay well we made Tim Burton act like a [TS]

grown-up he made a good movie now will [TS]

let him do whatever the hell he wants [TS]

oh god he made he's made something [TS]

  atrocious [TS]

not to mention the fact that that why is [TS]

it that superhero movie franchises feel [TS]

that once a movie is successful the best [TS]

way to do a sequel is by multiplying the [TS]

number of villains in it by a factor of [TS]

  three [TS]

Oh God well the doctor i didn't have [TS]

that problem with the multiple villain [TS]

well I could have Harvey today's any of [TS]

this stuff comes at the end which is in [TS]

my mind the worst part of that movie is [TS]

with because that I know where are you [TS]

always try is trying to lead into the [TS]

next movie with my biggest complaints [TS]

are they like the fairy scene and the [TS]

sort of little brother moralizing those [TS]

two bits didn't need to be in that movie [TS]

a fairy stone i think is terrible and [TS]

  that's actually happening simultaneous [TS]

with another scene that is bad which is [TS]

Batman gets equipped morgan freeman [TS]

equips Batman with his his bat radar [TS]

right his ballot all right he goes into [TS]

a tall building and he's trying to fight [TS]

bad guys in this tall building and it's [TS]

one of the most incompetent we put [TS]

together action scenes I've ever seen in [TS]

a major movie you at no point do you [TS]

  really understand what [TS]

going on you're completely lose track it [TS]

sort of transformers level of confusion [TS]

and it's a shame because again if [TS]

somebody come in and said no no this is [TS]

too much you've got a great movie here [TS]

if we chop off most of the last 30 [TS]

minutes or 45 minutes it would be a much [TS]

better movie than it is [TS]

yeah because it starts really strong and [TS]

it's focused and strong and dramatic and [TS]

I think the worst decision was that they [TS]

tried to make the big dramatic thing [TS]

that happens in the final act is bad [TS]

one of the things is there's not a [TS]

problem is 10 different things that [TS]

happen the final actress Batman [TS]

rejecting the idea of spying on the [TS]

citizenry you know I'll do it this once [TS]

but you have to burn the computers down [TS]

when you're done you know and his and [TS]

his faithful helper almost you know [TS]

threatens to quit because of this great [TS]

decision like no one cares about this [TS]

this is not of Batman's world [TS]

I don't care about Batman spies on his [TS]

to fight the bad guys i was on a later [TS]

  superhero movie episode [TS]

yeah you were talking about this we're [TS]

talking about this year's superhero [TS]

movies i was on that one when I was not [TS]

on the one where we talked about [TS]

superhero movies in general right in the [TS]

dark knight which we didn't like even [TS]

  though my design [TS]

I liked it I liked it speaking of being [TS]

critical now would probably be a good [TS]

time to interject my personal favorite [TS]

podcast moment of this year [TS]

oh yes which is John siracusa in the TV [TS]

draft picking Jack Shephard and he's so [TS]

proud of himself for getting to the [TS]

third round and and still having Jack [TS]

Shephard on the board and immediately he [TS]

gets slammed relentlessly by every [TS]

single other person on the on the [TS]

podcast for picking such a drab dull [TS]

character and literally everybody has [TS]

their say I think 11 a time everybody [TS]

leans it and what is nothing to say at [TS]

the end of him because he's been so [TS]

  abused [TS]

I'm happy to have made into the third [TS]

round for this pic Jack Shephard from [TS]

lost the lead of one of the best shows [TS]

in recent years at least interesting [TS]

there are you sure he wants that well [TS]

maybe I have a plan for him everything [TS]

that everybody has a plan for Jack's [TS]

  gonna cry a lot [TS]

boredom is that you're playing i hope i [TS]

hope you're not counting on your show [TS]

  involving him asking perceptive [TS]

questions i think i think he looks I [TS]

think you look sad a lot and he stares [TS]

in the middle distance a lot so you know [TS]

what would be a good episode of your [TS]

show but let's find out how Jack got his [TS]

tattoos I hear that would be really [TS]

  interesting [TS]

he knew he just needed a doctor for his [TS]

little Firefly show right of course it [TS]

turned out to be you know part of the [TS]

plan but still it was it's it's so funny [TS]

because he's pleased just even John [TS]

siracusa needs needs a little needs to [TS]

be taken down a peg every once in awhile [TS]

it siracusa yeah listen Scott who is not [TS]

scott McNulty crazy or he would become [TS]

invited said that he enjoyed episode 33 [TS]

win Syracuse's skewered real genius [TS]

oh good times and I episode 23 when [TS]

serenity Caldwell picked Mystery Men as [TS]

her superhero movie that she enjoyed I [TS]

believe who Diana and skeletor yeah [TS]

there you go just yet and Scotts request [TS]

is more drafts and more old movies so [TS]

  vote for old things [TS]

whoo yeah you can do that much for that [TS]

are you things that are also old no old [TS]

  things [TS]

nice um I just big 40 you things have a [TS]

lot of canceled shows strapped to which [TS]

wich a which was our lesson same of our [TS]

tube perhaps that we did but there was [TS]

some good stuff and my favorite moment [TS]

of that episode is where we all forgot [TS]

to pick firefly except Scott who hates [TS]

firefly but the rest is just for God [TS]

didn't win forget didn't we make an [TS]

explicit agreement upfront that was [TS]

afterwards that I was named can we make [TS]

it explicit agreement at the word yes it [TS]

was red card I i think if you if you [TS]

listen carefully to a clip that i might [TS]

play in a second you might notice that [TS]

there is a slight edit their where [TS]

we actually went through the first round [TS]

realize nobody picked firefly I need [TS]

that it would be the first pic and then [TS]

moved that section ahead to make it seem [TS]

as if we planned the whole sexy [TS]

oh it's likely they changed the Darren's [TS]

  secrets are revealed [TS]

oh here so i guess it's my choice but [TS]

before I make my my selection did [TS]

everybody just assumed that everybody [TS]

else is going to pick Firefly is that [TS]

  what happened [TS]

I mean what should I just bought us [TS]

should we just site Firefly and spot it [TS]

as saying like number one is firefly but [TS]

and none of us are going to pick it [TS]

because really I could pick it here but [TS]

I've got such a long list and I think it [TS]

kind of goes without saying that [TS]

everybody knows that Joss Whedon's sci [TS]

fi Western e thing firefly got cancelled [TS]

way too soon and was really quite good [TS]

and it died young and left a beautiful [TS]

  corpse [TS]

but you know please somebody wants to [TS]

wants to pick it we can do that but [TS]

otherwise i'm willing to just put it up [TS]

on the word was it was taking anybody's [TS]

was it not on anybody's list [TS]

oh it's on my list but of course I just [TS]

assumed also take it so I didn't you [TS]

know I think we should take it as read [TS]

and move on yes we've talked about it [TS]

all the time and other episodes it was [TS]

20 f pic of the dream it was not on my [TS]

list because i do not like it but I'm I [TS]

you always gonna be Scott and yeah [TS]

  anybody [TS]

yeah I assumed everybody else but Scott [TS]

would pick it will see they're all right [TS]

so I I you get firefly i will like a [TS]

  firefly on the board [TS]

thank God we have an editor wait this [TS]

podcast is ended only slightly I our [TS]

army doctor who / podcasts know these [TS]

are completely unedited yes i have to [TS]

  say and it shows [TS]

ya mean but originally just usually we [TS]

come up with greatness i particularly [TS]

liked our let's quilt Hitler episode if [TS]

only for the nonsense that it happens at [TS]

the very end when we go into things like [TS]

quilting Hitler and finding ways to make [TS]

nazis funny a new plot i just decided [TS]

that i'm going to write a book called [TS]

what's quilt Hitler oh look [TS]

uh-huh okay I know what Scott is my [TS]

daughter should people behind the [TS]

spaceship that's also a man come up with [TS]

a new plan called let's build Hitler i [TS]

like the idea of selling a book called [TS]

but schools filter for me to like now we [TS]

can suss out all the Nazis that's [TS]

expandable that's the way my name is [TS]

some overlap Nazi quilters who doesn't [TS]

want to smuggle with Hitler tonight but [TS]

they're all these while you're over 40 [TS]

so i can have blackmail material [TS]

I'm i know i am still recording our girl [TS]

yeah yeah we discovered one of the [TS]

things about Scott in the podcast and a [TS]

lot about ourselves so i also have have [TS]

have some more reader feedback here [TS]

these are she stayed on two stages on [TS]

studying these are from the contact form [TS]

and if you're wondering how to send us [TS]

information via the contact for perhaps [TS]

a newsletter is it to Center clock yeah [TS]

this historic courthouse that's that's [TS]

that's right it will be delivered to you [TS]

Fred Mertz miracle other forestry will [TS]

read them from the judges desk you go to [TS]

five-by-five a TV / contact and then you [TS]

can send messages like this one from [TS]

Stephen who writes in great show on [TS]

holiday movies but you missed my [TS]

favorite remember the night with Barbara [TS]

Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray are you have [TS]

not seen that 1i have no idea what he's [TS]

  talking about [TS]

now I've never heard of it do you think [TS]

  that stephen fry [TS]

it's possible you know it's a bad sign [TS]

when the title is remember the night and [TS]

nobody does nobody remembers remember [TS]

that night the day you'll always [TS]

remember question from mr. David volada [TS]

who says i'm new to the show and enjoy [TS]

  it tons [TS]

thank you used in in your recent book [TS]

club episode you joked about this being [TS]

  a book club [TS]

it's not it's not a joke okay maybe it [TS]

  is a book club [TS]

he says I'm new so I apologize if this [TS]

is common knowledge but is there such a [TS]

thing where I can learn of a book to be [TS]

discussed in the future read it on my [TS]

own and then listening as its discussed [TS]

and the answer is if we get our act [TS]

together in the previous book club we [TS]

will mention it if we don't get our act [TS]

together we will try to mention it on [TS]

  the previously mentioned the [TS]

incomparable Twitter account so follow [TS]

the incomparable on Twitter and we'll [TS]

try to let you know what books we are [TS]

planning on reading for future editions [TS]

of the book club and FYI you can always [TS]

not listen to episode read the book and [TS]

then listen to it such is the glory of [TS]

the podcast that is a great thing about [TS]

this medium if you guys pick a book [TS]

that's ten years old I might read it [TS]

maybe you already read it [TS]

chew on that Steve a pal of grey Moss [TS]

described only as a pal of greatness [TS]

wrote in to say tell your incomparable [TS]

buddies i have declared jihad on [TS]

siracusa he who despises real genius [TS]

despises life people people feel very [TS]

strongly like John Syracuse's what I'm [TS]

  learning from this [TS]

yes yes he does that uh listener [TS]

Christopher wrote in to suggest a topic [TS]

for an upcoming show before Christmas [TS]

oh well let's get on that haha sorry [TS]

this 2012 but but he wants to hear us [TS]

discuss cult christmas movies so maybe [TS]

we'll see that Barbara Stanwyck movie [TS]

could be a stressed-out 2s9 you all [TS]

remember the night before this time next [TS]

year but he mentioned you mentioned [TS]

diehard a christmas story The Nightmare [TS]

Before Christmas elf home alone all of [TS]

which we mentioned in our christmas [TS]

movie podcast so I thought it was as [TS]

yesterday at least partially satisfy as [TS]

if we listen to Christopher even though [TS]

we didn't read his letter until much [TS]

later he's an avid listener of 2011 [TS]

and I wanted to read my favorite itunes [TS]

review of the podcast please go to [TS]

iTunes and give us a positive review [TS]

because you can count Iraq this review [TS]

left on october tense the subject [TS]

ugh OH was unless my Kathy five people [TS]

talking over top of each other laughing [TS]

at their own poor quote jokes [TS]

close quote and then repeating them [TS]

again because no one else laughed no [TS]

insight no interesting points of view [TS]

no entertainment value unless you have [TS]

no friends to sit around a table and [TS]

chat with listen to be uncomfortable is [TS]

like listening to five different podcast [TS]

  being played at once [TS]

that's an idea a stain on the otherwise [TS]

mostly excellent five-by-five network i [TS]

like that i like the qualifier mostly [TS]

  closely [TS]

I'd like to apologize again for the [TS]

stephen fry episode i'm clearly we're so [TS]

I i think this gentleman might be an m16 [TS]

friday so Stephen Fry I've been playing [TS]

a lot of Wolfenstein 3d lately a [TS]

  twenty-year-old game [TS]

oh and I bought it you name nine out of [TS]

ten models when they're shot die by [TS]

  saying ugh [TS]

oh good point so it's you're saying he's [TS]

a pixelated not see it in the in his [TS]

death throes as he's taken a review [TS]

30 mr. sure he listened to a second [TS]

episode that wasn't Stephen Fry it [TS]

probably it was probably this one and [TS]

this one is subsequently he drafted he [TS]

wrote that i remember seeing that one [TS]

yeah so not everybody loved it [TS]

not everybody loved the TV draft that's [TS]

ok that's ok you can love us you can [TS]

hate it's exactly you're allowed to be [TS]

critical of us we week so good we can [TS]

add ago we can be praised phul you [TS]

should be critical in principle to [TS]

exactly what you're gonna be critical [TS]

keep it to yourself don't want to hear [TS]

  it cries your position [TS]

whenever i'm criticizing if your [TS]

critical at least be at least be [TS]

inventive and innovative don't criticize [TS]

thought you were gonna say at least be [TS]

critical of jobs siracusa for that or [TS]

that God knows I dude he's Syracuse is [TS]

too big to be on this episode tonight by [TS]

the way it's nice to be so this proxies [TS]

and his eye his agent is agent would let [TS]

  up here [TS]

he doesn't do clip shows sadly strictly [TS]

regulated yeah ever since Eric's gonna [TS]

work without the star wars holiday [TS]

season we couldn't afford him couldn't [TS]

afford John cerquita up so I've [TS]

exhausted all of our reader interaction [TS]

for for 2011 there that was able to [TS]

  thank goodness [TS]

can I ask can I throw out my favorite [TS]

moment moment from about yes please God [TS]

I right you know I was racking my brains [TS]

that it popped into my head because I [TS]

just I love this moment I don't remember [TS]

exactly where you put it and i think it [TS]

may be at the beginning of one of one of [TS]

the Empire episodes which is everybody's [TS]

impression of a imperial probe droid [TS]

oh yes that's at the beginning of one of [TS]

the Empire episodes and the other the [TS]

other one ends with yes largely you [TS]

doing your series of sound effects from [TS]

you can learn story star wars soundboard [TS]

very real problem guard and imap matter [TS]

  and a proper environment [TS]

ok and I'll try it remember where ya [TS]

riverbrook super oh how forgot but maybe [TS]

it's a little crass two favorite my own [TS]

appearance and about getting you know [TS]

what no one else did [TS]

so no I thought it was that that was a [TS]

funny moment with John mentioned the [TS]

imperial probe droid have been all four [TS]

of us begin doing our impressions all of [TS]

which are extremely different which is [TS]

also strange its yes but all of them [TS]

good in their own way [TS]

oh i think i will like to give a [TS]

shout-out as the kids say maybe sure [TS]

this will say that to glen relations [TS]

Jack Donaghy impersonation so glad i [TS]

love and II we love we love Glenn Glenn [TS]

Glenn could do a one-man show [TS]

I think he did so so Glenn would do his [TS]

Jack Donnie impression and I believe he [TS]

mispronounces Jack Donaghey we could [TS]

have them do some heavy breathing that's [TS]

  right and and then [TS]

  right and and then [TS]

you could have him to host an episode [TS]

about they might be giants and [TS]

repeatedly delivered of the demand as [TS]

they may be Giants they must be Giants [TS]

there could be done I don't know go and [TS]

don't forget of course is also excellent [TS]

impression of Jimmy Stewart the holiday [TS]

movies episode but of course one of [TS]

these days to the moon [TS]

stop your yapping we have a shipment of [TS]

10 million blackberry playbook stew [TS]

process for the unobtanium that the [TS]

Canadians actually baked into the cpu [TS]

  Canadians to the moon [TS]

Sulu's probables a man of one voice [TS]

stroked out Jimmy's but many [TS]

Impressionists but we love God and a bag [TS]

claim my favorite thing about about the [TS]

Glen contributed to the podcast this [TS]

year is that he came up with the idea [TS]

for the TV draft man wasn't in it as [TS]

well and then refused to to play with [TS]

the team that we in fact drafted for yes [TS]

yes he's he's told me several times that [TS]

this is phase one of his multi-phase [TS]

plan to destroy the podcast [TS]

well I thought phase one with Stephen [TS]

fra that was more like phase zero well [TS]

so you know it was a it was a good year [TS]

we started this podcast in 2010 but we [TS]

did a whole lot of episodes in 2011 and [TS]

it was all it was a lot of fun i'm [TS]

looking forward to what crazy things [TS]

will do when in 2012 like this show [TS]

yeah nothing's gonna stop Skeletor [TS]

though hmm i don't that maybe Skeletor [TS]

nobody can defeat skills or he's in the [TS]

  Hall of Fame now [TS]

well so happy New Year to everybody out [TS]

there and here's to a good 2012 and I [TS]

you know I want to thank not only the [TS]

people who are here on this episode but [TS]

all the contributors to the [TS]

uncomfortable in the past year it's been [TS]

a lot of fun so i would like to thank [TS]

most particularly the people who showed [TS]

up for the clip show so thank you Scott [TS]

  McNulty thank you Jason [TS]

Thank You serenity Caldwell well I thank [TS]

you Jason Snell thank you Dan Morgan I i [TS]

guess thanks are in order even lots [TS]

Prospero annually felicidad snow bank [TS]

and shank stew over all the listeners [TS]

even those who didn't write in or leave [TS]

  one star itunes reviews [TS]

thank you most of all ugh we'll be back [TS]

with regular episodes next week [TS]

  another good good [TS]

there you go that's an episode right [TS]

there episode number 73 argh [TS]

you know I did relate Skeletor sorry I [TS]

  have a school-related most when i was a [TS]

kid i loved i love t man is good and my [TS]

cousins used to babysit for me and my [TS]

cousin Jennie who I think was in her [TS]

teens late teens early twenties but [TS]

recently used to change to breed me a [TS]

heat minute he-man story and should we [TS]

change it to and then Skeletor killed he [TS]

mayhem and I would sit there going no [TS]

  that's impossible [TS]

I thought you were about to say she used [TS]

to change you into a loincloth and a [TS]

purple and blue that's a different [TS]

molecule let's let's do it now and it's [TS]

already very babe attention during my [TS]

  nap now [TS]

oh that was good for it that's good [TS]

radio that's good podcast on you [TS]

that's it etudie are you all was that [TS]

your your impression of a watch on a [TS]

dyslexic stores fan of our stores or [TS]

  stores thank you [TS]

well now go to a solo well I have to say [TS]

  is ugh [TS]
