64: Ghosts Cause Cancer

00:00:00   the incontrovertible Todd test number 64 [TS]

00:00:10   halloween 2011 we're back on the [TS]

00:00:14   incomparable podcast I'm your host Jason [TS]

00:00:16   Snell and in honor of Halloween we are [TS]

00:00:21   going to talk about a movie that is not [TS]

00:00:23   really scary but it's all about ghost's [TS]

00:00:26   its ghost busters from 1984 one of my [TS]

00:00:30   favorite movies of all time [TS]

00:00:34   John Syracuse's not here to tear it [TS]

00:00:36   apart i learned my lesson instead here [TS]

00:00:40   to probably say terrible things about it [TS]

00:00:42   are Dan more'n dan how many times have [TS]

00:00:46   you seen ghostbusters [TS]

00:00:48   I think as I was I was I was confiding a [TS]

00:00:51   moment ago but now that you've decided [TS]

00:00:52   to air my dirty laundry [TS]

00:00:54   I think that was earlier this week when [TS]

00:00:56   i watch it was my second time seeing the [TS]

00:00:58   whole thing but Jason I how is that [TS]

00:01:01   possible [TS]

00:01:02   I need to point out that despite that I [TS]

00:01:05   ain't afraid of no good [TS]

00:01:06   I i don't know if you've only seen it [TS]

00:01:09   twice you might actually be afraid I'm [TS]

00:01:11   slightly afraid of some ghosts ok [TS]

00:01:13   alright alright the ghost in this movie [TS]

00:01:15   yes serenity Caldwell his voice you just [TS]

00:01:17   heard how many times have you seen this [TS]

00:01:18   at many or or only the once i have seen [TS]

00:01:22   it more times than I can count [TS]

00:01:24   not enough times not enough time that it [TS]

00:01:27   goes in my all-time favorite movies list [TS]

00:01:29   but it was definitely a film on repeat [TS]

00:01:33   often when I was growing up as a child [TS]

00:01:35   alright that that qualifies you for more [TS]

00:01:37   than Dan so excellent work also [TS]

00:01:40   also joining us is my compatriot for [TS]

00:01:44   many years ago [TS]

00:01:46   he's an old man like me ben boychuk I [TS]

00:01:50   been a Jason hey everybody [TS]

00:01:52   and how many times have you seen [TS]

00:01:54   Ghostbusters too many to count [TS]

00:01:55   well yes but I was going to say since [TS]

00:01:58   we're old men three times in the theater [TS]

00:02:01   in the summer of nineteen eighty-four [TS]

00:02:03   there you go and then probably 15 times [TS]

00:02:08   since then including today [TS]

00:02:11   wow I i saw [TS]

00:02:13   uh-huh once or twice in the theater in [TS]

00:02:17   the summer of 84 and I remember when it [TS]

00:02:21   came out on on VHS which was not too [TS]

00:02:24   long after i think it was i mean at the [TS]

00:02:26   time that was not too long it was like [TS]

00:02:28   six months later or seven months later [TS]

00:02:30   but boy I watched it on VHS [TS]

00:02:34   I cannot tell you how many times it's [TS]

00:02:36   probably i think it's i want to say at [TS]

00:02:40   least at least 30 it's probably more [TS]

00:02:42   like 50 and because I just had I had the [TS]

00:02:46   tape to the point where now when i watch [TS]

00:02:48   the DVD or blu-ray which is in [TS]

00:02:50   widescreen I actually noticed the scenes [TS]

00:02:53   that were panned and scanned in the VHS [TS]

00:02:55   i can i can still remember [TS]

00:02:57   oh yeah they used to have to pan back [TS]

00:02:59   and forth for that conversation and now [TS]

00:03:01   they don't because it's burned on my [TS]

00:03:02   brain [TS]

00:03:03   anyway so Ghostbusters should be no [TS]

00:03:07   surprise to anybody except perhaps dan I [TS]

00:03:10   directed by ivan reitman from a [TS]

00:03:13   screenplay by two of the stars of the [TS]

00:03:16   movie [TS]

00:03:17   dan Aykroyd and harold ramis and then [TS]

00:03:20   starting starting Aykroyd Ramos Bill [TS]

00:03:22   Murray Sigourney Weaver Rick Moranis [TS]

00:03:24   there lots of giants in this movie [TS]

00:03:27   Ernie hot Bernie Hudson Ernie Hudson [TS]

00:03:29   isn't Ernie Hudson deer heads Larry King [TS]

00:03:32   casey kasem william atherton way out a [TS]

00:03:35   great William Atherton and roger grimsby [TS]

00:03:38   newsman roger grimsby also in this in a [TS]

00:03:41   cameo and Casey Kasem's wife blonde wife [TS]

00:03:45   Jean Kasem also in this movie [TS]

00:03:47   how's that for the knowledge haha also i [TS]

00:03:50   think i think i noticed a trivia factoid [TS]

00:03:52   in any pots i should mention too yes go [TS]

00:03:54   ahead [TS]

00:03:55   so William Atherton excuse me William [TS]

00:03:57   Atherton of course from designer of the [TS]

00:04:00   trifecta of william atherton rolls right [TS]

00:04:03   right from die hard but I believe there [TS]

00:04:05   is in fact a second diehard actor algos [TS]

00:04:10   I hard that you're at a New York cop in [TS]

00:04:13   this movie for one scene about 23 [TS]

00:04:16   seconds right yeah he goes hey [TS]

00:04:18   ghostbusters [TS]

00:04:19   the mayor wants to talk to you yeah hey [TS]

00:04:21   get accounts it's al from die hard right [TS]

00:04:24   there [TS]

00:04:25   there you go and I heard too [TS]

00:04:27   yes but not die hard with a vengeance [TS]

00:04:29   not that hard with inches and of course [TS]

00:04:32   family matters [TS]

00:04:33   that's a good that's good knowledge i [TS]

00:04:34   actually have in my notes something that [TS]

00:04:36   I didn't really ever think about before [TS]

00:04:38   but this time through when i watched it [TS]

00:04:40   yesterday I thought hey that's out from [TS]

00:04:42   die hard and that's yet I I sky see you [TS]

00:04:45   know what I was just looking at the [TS]

00:04:46   credits after they rolled myself wait [TS]

00:04:48   Reggie veljohnson yeah it's got me [TS]

00:04:50   Reginald veljohnson [TS]

00:04:50   yeah you're playing playing it on a cock [TS]

00:04:54   city cop you know we never really got [TS]

00:04:57   out of that they must they must have [TS]

00:04:59   seen Ghostbusters so let's get that guy [TS]

00:05:01   to be in dire yeah i think they did so [TS]

00:05:04   um I actually can't go to New York City [TS]

00:05:07   without thinking about this movie it's [TS]

00:05:10   funny because there's so many movies [TS]

00:05:12   that are set in New York and it for [TS]

00:05:14   whatever reason you know when I go past [TS]

00:05:18   the library with the lion statues I [TS]

00:05:20   cannot help but think of the first scene [TS]

00:05:22   of ghostbusters when i'm in Central Park [TS]

00:05:24   and looking over at central park west [TS]

00:05:26   I can recognize the building even though [TS]

00:05:29   it had a matte painting on it in a movie [TS]

00:05:31   but spook central is there on Central [TS]

00:05:34   Park West just doesn't have the top with [TS]

00:05:36   the the you know horrible horrible demon [TS]

00:05:40   creatures on it that's just a matte [TS]

00:05:42   painting it's not real that's probably [TS]

00:05:44   for the best if you have spooked that [TS]

00:05:46   spook central doesn't actually exist [TS]

00:05:47   with its silentium girders and the paid [TS]

00:05:52   by the animal sacrifice architect evo [TS]

00:05:55   stand or it might be a little bit hard [TS]

00:05:58   to get people to live there i mean no [TS]

00:06:00   new york city is kind of a commodity for [TS]

00:06:02   real estate but the you know [TS]

00:06:04   well clearly there are things you draw [TS]

00:06:06   the line at clearly musician Dana [TS]

00:06:08   Barrett and accountant lowest le felt it [TS]

00:06:13   was a perfectly fine place to live [TS]

00:06:15   although I guess that you know pls fix [TS]

00:06:17   they they learned their lesson did Mac [TS]

00:06:20   for today I don't know anyway so it's [TS]

00:06:24   funny that that for me [TS]

00:06:26   the setting of New York and and the [TS]

00:06:29   library and central park west and all [TS]

00:06:31   that I just can't it's just funny that [TS]

00:06:34   it's it's connected in my brain with it [TS]

00:06:36   I i'll admit that the the first time I [TS]

00:06:39   ever visited New York when I was about [TS]

00:06:41   12 or 13 my mother insisted that we [TS]

00:06:43   walked past the firehouse and indeed it [TS]

00:06:45   is there and and it's a little adorable [TS]

00:06:47   i haven't done that information they [TS]

00:06:50   didn't go for sale or something recently [TS]

00:06:52   there was something in an in the news [TS]

00:06:54   better than the last year where it was [TS]

00:06:55   either for sale or they wanted to knock [TS]

00:06:57   it down or something like that [TS]

00:06:58   relax everybody has three mortgages [TS]

00:06:59   nowadays so they're jokes in this movie [TS]

00:07:02   not to skip ahead slightly but their [TS]

00:07:03   jokes in this movie that I'm I'm I'm [TS]

00:07:05   fascinated by because as I don't know [TS]

00:07:09   the agent some red and you were when you [TS]

00:07:12   first saw this but I I i saw it at well [TS]

00:07:15   i don't know i mean dan you've only seen [TS]

00:07:17   it twice for all I know you saw it last [TS]

00:07:18   year I i cannot i cannot lie the first [TS]

00:07:21   time that I can remember seeing the [TS]

00:07:23   entire thing and i'm certain i saw bits [TS]

00:07:25   and pieces of it before then the first [TS]

00:07:27   time I can remember seeing it all the [TS]

00:07:28   way through his freshman year of college [TS]

00:07:30   where it was shown on a projected [TS]

00:07:33   outside I'm like a big screen for like a [TS]

00:07:35   freshman movie night in the first like [TS]

00:07:37   week or two of college and I remember [TS]

00:07:39   the time thinking like the I you know I [TS]

00:07:41   to say to get into my defense to a [TS]

00:07:43   certain extent was like I really did not [TS]

00:07:45   like scary movies as a child and this is [TS]

00:07:47   not a super scary movie but there's [TS]

00:07:48   there's enough parts of it that for me [TS]

00:07:50   as a kid [TS]

00:07:51   we're kind of scary the idea of ghost [TS]

00:07:53   was a little bit scary [TS]

00:07:54   so I I as i said i was afraid of some [TS]

00:07:57   ghosts at library Stan yes wibrary I [TS]

00:08:00   didn't want to go to the library [TS]

00:08:02   scenarios prayers [TS]

00:08:03   exactly i mean that that might be the [TS]

00:08:05   scariest ghost in the movie [TS]

00:08:07   I think so yeah even scarier than the [TS]

00:08:09   one who looks like David Bowie so i [TS]

00:08:12   think i think that the you know I I [TS]

00:08:16   think I i watch it as an [TS]

00:08:17   eighteen-year-old and thought this is [TS]

00:08:18   actually really funny movie what was I [TS]

00:08:20   scared of all those years and and did [TS]

00:08:21   find it incredibly amusing at that point [TS]

00:08:23   so I think I probably got most of the [TS]

00:08:25   jokes that would have flown over the [TS]

00:08:27   head of a of me if I had only seen it as [TS]

00:08:29   a younger as a 13 or 12 year old yea [TS]

00:08:32   though i was very precocious so I you [TS]

00:08:35   know some of these jokes like there are [TS]

00:08:37   there's the joke when ray takes out the [TS]

00:08:40   three mortgages on the bank around that [TS]

00:08:43   at the bank on his parents and his [TS]

00:08:44   parents are here it's left to me [TS]

00:08:46   yeah exactly um you know [TS]

00:08:49   I didn't understand that joke it and [TS]

00:08:51   then Egon points out that it's like [TS]

00:08:54   eighteen percent interest nineteen [TS]

00:08:56   percent interest i'm ninety ninety-five [TS]

00:08:58   thousand dollars over the first five [TS]

00:09:00   years of a look [TS]

00:09:01   yeah so I didn't understand any of that [TS]

00:09:05   and then there is a famous scene later [TS]

00:09:07   on we're uh we're uh ray awakens to a [TS]

00:09:13   beautiful ghost hovering over him who [TS]

00:09:16   unzips his pants and moves downward and [TS]

00:09:18   his eyes cross and he falls out of the [TS]

00:09:20   bed and as I remember as a [TS]

00:09:22   thirteen-year-old thinking that was [TS]

00:09:23   hilarious scene had no idea what it was [TS]

00:09:28   suggesting so that's just that's just [TS]

00:09:30   that's just left the comedy right it's [TS]

00:09:33   like three stooges stuff [TS]

00:09:34   yeah it's nothing she unzipped his pants [TS]

00:09:36   and he hilarious he his eyes crossed all [TS]

00:09:39   these fellows are unzipped man that's [TS]

00:09:41   that he's gonna it's like a great fall [TS]

00:09:43   down it's like yeah it's like she tied [TS]

00:09:44   his shoelaces together [TS]

00:09:45   yeah a format that you were weren't you [TS]

00:09:48   about 14 years 11-13 yeah huh yep nope [TS]

00:09:53   no idea about that but so initially [TS]

00:09:57   flowers your total yeah no innocents [TS]

00:09:59   maintained because little business [TS]

00:10:01   maintained [TS]

00:10:03   yeah I kind of knew are you know it was [TS]

00:10:06   it was a magic summer 1984 olympics were [TS]

00:10:09   in Los Angeles Ghostbusters came out my [TS]

00:10:14   mind I remember my mom driving me and a [TS]

00:10:17   couple of my pals down to the Alex [TS]

00:10:20   theater in glendale california i'll just [TS]

00:10:23   see it and yeah it was great that was [TS]

00:10:26   that that was really that was really [TS]

00:10:29   magic my uh for me that was the summer [TS]

00:10:33   between high school or between [TS]

00:10:35   elementary school in high school and I [TS]

00:10:37   remember my friends and I with nothing [TS]

00:10:40   to do in this on the on a bunch of [TS]

00:10:42   summer nights after we saw Ghostbusters [TS]

00:10:44   where we would just wander around it [TS]

00:10:46   actually a ghost town where I grew up [TS]

00:10:49   seeing if there was any paranormal [TS]

00:10:53   activity [TS]

00:10:55   spoiler alert the only thing paranormal [TS]

00:10:58   was us anyway for those of us who were [TS]

00:11:01   were paying attention or [TS]

00:11:02   Dora life in the summer of nineteen [TS]

00:11:04   eighty-four yes I was not a lot on my [TS]

00:11:09   parents I'm sure my parents went to go [TS]

00:11:11   see it in los angeles in a way you've [TS]

00:11:12   seen it in your race memory [TS]

00:11:14   yes it's a DNA that's good [TS]

00:11:18   there's a lot of good semester so [TS]

00:11:19   sponsors as it should be [TS]

00:11:21   so um so the movie begins with a scary [TS]

00:11:25   ghost in the library and I believe this [TS]

00:11:31   is one of the first movies ever to not [TS]

00:11:33   to completely avoid up credit credit [TS]

00:11:38   sequence at the beginning of the movie i [TS]

00:11:40   think i read somewhere that they [TS]

00:11:41   actually had to do something get some [TS]

00:11:44   special approval so that it just shows [TS]

00:11:46   the title and that's in the Directors [TS]

00:11:48   Guild yeah yeah I have the Guild's yeah [TS]

00:11:51   he's very up in arms about it [TS]

00:11:52   yeah so it's just you know Ghostbusters [TS]

00:11:54   and the song plays for a second and [TS]

00:11:57   that's it and that's it until the end of [TS]

00:12:00   the movie and were immediately in [TS]

00:12:02   columbia university which made a deal [TS]

00:12:05   with the filmmakers that they could film [TS]

00:12:07   at columbia university they just [TS]

00:12:09   couldn't ever say the name so they [TS]

00:12:13   didn't and we and we drop in on Peter [TS]

00:12:17   Venkman played by Bill Murray who is [TS]

00:12:20   conducting an experiment into ESP that [TS]

00:12:23   this is the most up just horrible breach [TS]

00:12:27   of scientific protocols you will ever [TS]

00:12:30   see figure 8 incredible that's 5 45 you [TS]

00:12:34   can't see these games [TS]

00:12:35   no you're not cheating area no I swear [TS]

00:12:38   they're just coming to me i don't like [TS]

00:12:40   this he only have 75 more to go [TS]

00:12:43   what's this one couple wavy lines sorry [TS]

00:12:47   this isn't your lucky day [TS]

00:12:49   no get a little tired of this you [TS]

00:12:53   volunteer didn't you [TS]

00:12:54   we're paying you are wait yeah but I [TS]

00:12:56   don't think we have to give me electric [TS]

00:12:57   shocks he is this ski easiest yet most [TS]

00:13:00   lovable professor i think has ever been [TS]

00:13:02   put on screen because ultimately you [TS]

00:13:04   want to kick him in the balls and you [TS]

00:13:06   also want to hug him and I don't I can't [TS]

00:13:07   wrap my head around this [TS]

00:13:09   yeah I'm not sure he really grows during [TS]

00:13:11   the movie no he started all pretty I [TS]

00:13:15   mean he is I think [TS]

00:13:16   the one I wrote down my notes is [TS]

00:13:18   unrepentant fraud he's just he is [TS]

00:13:23   putting the moves on the little blonde [TS]

00:13:26   coed from Charles in Charge and right I [TS]

00:13:30   think she was she from is that where [TS]

00:13:32   she's from [TS]

00:13:32   I think Charles jared is it is it [TS]

00:13:34   Jennifer run yeah I you know because I [TS]

00:13:36   looked her up because that you know I [TS]

00:13:38   looked at all this up on IMDb and you [TS]

00:13:41   know again 2202 just get a sense of how [TS]

00:13:45   old this movie is and how old we are not [TS]

00:13:48   that that woman I mean you know you this [TS]

00:13:50   lovely coed is now 51 years old [TS]

00:13:53   sure sure but at the time pretty brought [TS]

00:13:56   pretty blonde coed from Charles in [TS]

00:13:58   Charge also again showing at what a [TS]

00:14:01   clueless thirteen-year-old I was you [TS]

00:14:03   know I i got that bill murray was [TS]

00:14:07   putting the moves on her but I didn't [TS]

00:14:10   really get that he was pretty much [TS]

00:14:12   locked in on you know get give me an [TS]

00:14:15   hour or so [TS]

00:14:16   yeah you know god so what I mean it's [TS]

00:14:20   funny it's a really funny scene he [TS]

00:14:22   shocks the guy even though he gets one [TS]

00:14:24   of the cards right he tells her [TS]

00:14:27   everything she does is right but at the [TS]

00:14:29   same time you know you [TS]

00:14:30   he is he is introduced as being this you [TS]

00:14:35   know total fraud [TS]

00:14:38   yeah just funny since he's been its main [TS]

00:14:41   character right not only not only that [TS]

00:14:43   but you know they're there you could [TS]

00:14:45   argue there's a parallel between his [TS]

00:14:47   character here and William athens [TS]

00:14:48   character in another one of your [TS]

00:14:50   favorite movies [TS]

00:14:52   Oh in in real genius yeah i mean they're [TS]

00:14:55   always professor les I have the right [TS]

00:14:57   right there flip sides of the same coin [TS]

00:14:59   brilliant and you think about that [TS]

00:15:01   yeah i'm going to drop some knowledge in [TS]

00:15:03   this podcast is my english major stuff [TS]

00:15:04   we've tied to die hard and real genius [TS]

00:15:07   now it's still tied to every seminal [TS]

00:15:09   movie the eighties well no I mean it was [TS]

00:15:11   torture [TS]

00:15:12   this first five minutes at Columbia or [TS]

00:15:17   you know fictional columbia Empire State [TS]

00:15:19   University for spider-man fan's at the [TS]

00:15:24   fictional fictional columbia there's a [TS]

00:15:27   lot of good stuff because the Dean comes [TS]

00:15:29   and says that you know we're kicking you [TS]

00:15:32   out because you're frauds which we've [TS]

00:15:34   seen that they are although we do we [TS]

00:15:37   meet you know we meet ray and Egon and [TS]

00:15:41   they seem to be more enthusiastic and [TS]

00:15:44   and you know they're more enthusiastic [TS]

00:15:48   about what they're what they're doing [TS]

00:15:50   and maybe it turns out actually know [TS]

00:15:51   something about what they're doing but [TS]

00:15:53   the the incomes and kicks them out and [TS]

00:15:55   that leads to this up this great scene [TS]

00:15:57   where they're where they're drinking [TS]

00:15:59   right out of a bottle and and staring [TS]

00:16:03   out on the campus and talking about how [TS]

00:16:05   it out when you're not in when you're [TS]

00:16:09   not in college [TS]

00:16:11   I'm which Venkman has never been outside [TS]

00:16:13   of a college campus you actually held to [TS]

00:16:17   you know did they expect results in the [TS]

00:16:19   real world which is a it's a really [TS]

00:16:21   funny so set of scenes where these guys [TS]

00:16:25   are being are being kicked out and and [TS]

00:16:27   you know thank man especially as it has [TS]

00:16:30   essentially been freeloading his entire [TS]

00:16:32   life i know i know some PhDs who have [TS]

00:16:35   been like that most of them study things [TS]

00:16:39   that are marginally more verifiable than [TS]

00:16:42   parapsychology and what happened but and [TS]

00:16:45   psychology right yahoo two PhDs he holds [TS]

00:16:47   because he's been there that long [TS]

00:16:51   it's a nice classy like that no I mean I [TS]

00:16:55   think I you know I think it's got very [TS]

00:16:57   real things to say about this the [TS]

00:16:58   bartender system in the society [TS]

00:17:00   ok it's very meaningful forecast now [TS]

00:17:03   it's deep [TS]

00:17:03   I'm saying this entire movie it says its [TS]

00:17:05   layers Ghostbusters was for a long time [TS]

00:17:09   I think the highest growing grossing [TS]

00:17:10   comedy movie of all time and made [TS]

00:17:13   something like 240 million and it was [TS]

00:17:16   really the the first comedy 2 The with [TS]

00:17:24   with like special effects the first sort [TS]

00:17:25   of special-effects comedy to be a hit [TS]

00:17:28   and it really kind of created the genre [TS]

00:17:30   of the of the summer comedy blockbuster [TS]

00:17:36   and and from there you get back to the [TS]

00:17:40   future and you can draw a line from [TS]

00:17:42   marrow [TS]

00:17:43   a way to like men in black and and and [TS]

00:17:44   and other movies that are action but [TS]

00:17:46   they're also comedy back to the future [TS]

00:17:49   it you know which was the big hit of the [TS]

00:17:51   following year I really think that [TS]

00:17:53   there's a you know Ghostbusters success [TS]

00:17:55   was one of the reasons why it really [TS]

00:17:57   kind of paved the way for back to the [TS]

00:17:58   future so in back-to-back years we got [TS]

00:18:00   these great sci-fi comedies basically [TS]

00:18:05   which is a you know it's pretty funny [TS]

00:18:09   when you think about it you not normally [TS]

00:18:12   you wouldn't really necessarily combine [TS]

00:18:14   those things in a major motion picture i [TS]

00:18:16   guess but action and comedies [TS]

00:18:17   construction all on one [TS]

00:18:19   It's A Wrap together it's a it's a genre [TS]

00:18:21   vendor right cuz cuz Ghostbusters is is [TS]

00:18:24   at its core you know it's a comedy but [TS]

00:18:29   it's got I remember the time now I [TS]

00:18:30   realize you guys from your from your [TS]

00:18:33   perspective i mean it's it's this [TS]

00:18:35   eighties movie and the special effects [TS]

00:18:36   are obviously miniatures and there's a [TS]

00:18:38   lot of rotoscope kind of stuff but at [TS]

00:18:40   the time it really a it blew away [TS]

00:18:45   audiences that the effects were what [TS]

00:18:48   they were because i don't think anybody [TS]

00:18:50   came into that movie expecting it to [TS]

00:18:52   have a big budget kind of Hollywood [TS]

00:18:55   special effects and that's what those [TS]

00:18:56   are that Ghostbusters actually has that [TS]

00:18:59   yeah I mean I i was thinking about that [TS]

00:19:01   as i watched it and and sort of you know [TS]

00:19:03   thinking movies that came out around [TS]

00:19:05   similar times and certainly it doesn't [TS]

00:19:07   necessarily have the same mean this is [TS]

00:19:09   what you're after Return of the Jedi [TS]

00:19:10   which I would argue as much better [TS]

00:19:12   special effects but obviously that's [TS]

00:19:13   sort of like you know like a bigger a [TS]

00:19:15   little bit of your knowledge it's a [TS]

00:19:16   bigger budget if I got like it's on the [TS]

00:19:18   guy was on the cutting edge of [TS]

00:19:19   special-effects right but you know that [TS]

00:19:21   aside the effects are actually still [TS]

00:19:24   pretty good and I you know some of us [TS]

00:19:27   especially a lot of the ghost stuff [TS]

00:19:29   early on and you know it later and don't [TS]

00:19:31   want to get ahead but like you know safe [TS]

00:19:32   partial meant pretty awesome [TS]

00:19:34   yeah that it is it is you know growing [TS]

00:19:37   up because i watched i watched a lot of [TS]

00:19:40   eighties movies growing up because [TS]

00:19:41   that's what just we had in our illegal [TS]

00:19:43   beta tape collection i want to you know [TS]

00:19:46   when I was when I was young my parents [TS]

00:19:48   to get away from having to rent lots of [TS]

00:19:50   movies would borrow movies from their [TS]

00:19:52   friends and rent movies from blockbuster [TS]

00:19:54   and then rip everything for [TS]

00:19:56   more VHS player to our beta player that [TS]

00:19:57   was common person that was a common [TS]

00:19:59   procedure i I'd ministers and other [TS]

00:20:01   limitations here huh [TS]

00:20:02   I think there is i had the ancestors of [TS]

00:20:04   my watch time and time again was copied [TS]

00:20:06   one VCR to another but I feel don't feel [TS]

00:20:10   so bad since I've never bought it i [TS]

00:20:12   don't know how many times another for [TS]

00:20:14   exactly you even more than paid for it [TS]

00:20:16   but I mean who among us hasn't broken [TS]

00:20:19   though anyway [TS]

00:20:21   going forward I know but most of the [TS]

00:20:24   movies I've watched I'd say you know [TS]

00:20:26   from age four or five to age 14 were all [TS]

00:20:31   eighties movies with varying levels of [TS]

00:20:33   special-effects and and varying you know [TS]

00:20:36   levels of comedy and watching those I [TS]

00:20:40   didn't really know like it wasn't in my [TS]

00:20:42   brain to notice the special effects it [TS]

00:20:43   was just more like hey a hundred foot [TS]

00:20:47   tall Stay Puft Marshmallow Man that's [TS]

00:20:49   awesome and that you know ghost that's [TS]

00:20:53   really cool not from that Matt line [TS]

00:20:55   looks a little strange you know when I [TS]

00:20:57   you could appreciate it i'm gonna kind [TS]

00:20:59   of pure level that this is a ghost story [TS]

00:21:02   that's also a comedy exactly i got [TS]

00:21:04   completely raw trapped up into the film [TS]

00:21:06   and when I saw it I think I had like a [TS]

00:21:08   five or six-year gap between the the [TS]

00:21:11   last time I saw it when I was a kid and [TS]

00:21:12   then maybe I saw it again when i was 17 [TS]

00:21:15   or 18 and rewatching I'm like oh yeah I [TS]

00:21:17   guess there are you know there are [TS]

00:21:18   problems in there are bits that there's [TS]

00:21:20   something really funny movie [TS]

00:21:22   yeah exactly but I mean most of my [TS]

00:21:24   favorite films are from that time period [TS]

00:21:26   and you know Empire and Jedi and I'm [TS]

00:21:28   like you know it [TS]

00:21:29   Matt lines don't really matter so much [TS]

00:21:31   because the story is great you know as [TS]

00:21:35   as I was watching it again today it [TS]

00:21:37   occurred to me that I mean I was [TS]

00:21:38   thinking about the special effects and I [TS]

00:21:41   thought overall pretty good except for [TS]

00:21:43   two things when the the devil dog is is [TS]

00:21:48   chasing our Rick Moranis there there's a [TS]

00:21:52   couple of audit when it when the thing [TS]

00:21:54   moves it looks doesn't look very good [TS]

00:21:56   and a second just the bike by far the [TS]

00:22:00   worst special effect the whole thing is [TS]

00:22:02   is a Sigourney Weaver's hair haha [TS]

00:22:06   yeah yeah yeah they just don't know what [TS]

00:22:11   to do with Sigourney Weaver's here [TS]

00:22:13   those are those the terror dogs are like [TS]

00:22:15   stop motion animation you have a great [TS]

00:22:17   Harry house and kinda kind of stuff on [TS]

00:22:19   kinda I kind of enjoyed that that aspect [TS]

00:22:22   of it honestly like from a from sort of [TS]

00:22:24   nostalgia perspective ivan reitman has [TS]

00:22:26   not gone back and and created a special [TS]

00:22:29   edition of of ghostbusters with CGI [TS]

00:22:32   terror dogs or anything like that so [TS]

00:22:35   thank goodness of God but if he did ya [TS]

00:22:37   know that's that would be bad [TS]

00:22:40   let us let us put the stake in the [TS]

00:22:42   ground right now no CGI stop-motion dogs [TS]

00:22:46   alright so we've already talked about [TS]

00:22:47   Bill Murray let's talk about the rest of [TS]

00:22:49   the Ghostbusters we have raced dance the [TS]

00:22:51   heart of the Ghostbusters played by dan [TS]

00:22:53   Aykroyd [TS]

00:22:54   he is the most enthusiastic guy ever [TS]

00:22:59   he is very excited he comes in to the to [TS]

00:23:03   Colombia to their office and says oh its [TS]

00:23:07   Bluebook soft-shells it buried the [TS]

00:23:09   needle it's really exciting and I love [TS]

00:23:14   dan Aykroyd in this movie he's just he's [TS]

00:23:17   just super excited i guess a real-life [TS]

00:23:19   dynamic word believes in ghosts and [TS]

00:23:21   other paranormal things and you know [TS]

00:23:23   whatever but hehe that his character ray [TS]

00:23:26   is just like childlike with enthusiasm [TS]

00:23:30   about all things ghostly he has one of [TS]

00:23:33   the best lines in the movie which is [TS]

00:23:34   I've worked in the private sector they [TS]

00:23:37   expect results have wonder where he [TS]

00:23:39   worked in the practice sector [TS]

00:23:41   oh really i like it being left through [TS]

00:23:44   where was he employed me he's very happy [TS]

00:23:48   private ghost research facility the [TS]

00:23:52   government i don't know i can just see [TS]

00:23:54   him as you know a grad school student [TS]

00:23:56   working part time retail with read their [TS]

00:23:58   retail haha okay that may be at that [TS]

00:24:01   actually might be it [TS]

00:24:03   and then there's a another sheet on [TS]

00:24:04   Spangler played by harold ramis who is [TS]

00:24:06   the very serious scientist who collect [TS]

00:24:12   spores molds and fungus declares that [TS]

00:24:15   print is dead which you have I and I had [TS]

00:24:17   a lot of that in 1984 [TS]

00:24:20   yeah yeah it's like I must be reading [TS]

00:24:22   magazines on his iPad yeah yeah the [TS]

00:24:25   thing he wasn't harold ramis I believe [TS]

00:24:27   wasn't actually supposed to play Egon [TS]

00:24:29   originally i was just reading the tree [TS]

00:24:31   page apparently know what none of the [TS]

00:24:33   characters are like supposed to be [TS]

00:24:34   played by the actors who ended up [TS]

00:24:36   playing them Peter Venkman was supposed [TS]

00:24:37   to be John Belushi [TS]

00:24:39   yeah we Ally was supposed to be John [TS]

00:24:40   Candy when Sam was supposed to be Eddie [TS]

00:24:43   Murphy yeah goes you're supposed to be [TS]

00:24:45   Paul Reubens this to the entire the [TS]

00:24:48   entire cast was like yeah you know they [TS]

00:24:50   didn't get those guys imagine that movie [TS]

00:24:51   I don't know be better [TS]

00:24:54   yeah I don't know if it could have been [TS]

00:24:56   better i think Bill Murray especially is [TS]

00:24:59   summary is pretty and so great in this [TS]

00:25:02   in this part but there's some good [TS]

00:25:05   there's a good stuff i mean at for the [TS]

00:25:07   for the serious guy [TS]

00:25:08   Egon has some have some great lines [TS]

00:25:10   including our I collect spores molds and [TS]

00:25:13   fungus and and toward the end of the [TS]

00:25:15   movie he asks Rick Moranis for some [TS]

00:25:18   brain tissue which is just a great it's [TS]

00:25:22   it's a very night off [TS]

00:25:23   he's great deadpan you know ya [TS]

00:25:25   experience feelings of dread [TS]

00:25:26   in-your-face Manhattan haha are you [TS]

00:25:28   troubled by strange noises in the middle [TS]

00:25:30   of the night [TS]

00:25:31   your experience feelings of dread in [TS]

00:25:33   your basement or attic you or any of [TS]

00:25:35   your family ever seen a spook vector or [TS]

00:25:37   goes if the answer is yes then don't [TS]

00:25:39   wait another minute pick up your phone [TS]

00:25:40   and call the professionals logo starters [TS]

00:25:43   are courteous and efficient staff is on [TS]

00:25:44   call 24 hours a day to serve all your [TS]

00:25:46   supernatural elimination needs we're [TS]

00:25:48   ready to believe you i love that [TS]

00:25:51   commercial it's so low budget and end [TS]

00:25:53   and it's used to set up [TS]

00:25:56   Sigourney Weaver in her apartment she's [TS]

00:25:57   watching it but it's so perfect that [TS]

00:26:00   they are it's like the most prominently [TS]

00:26:03   I mean having you know as we I'm sure [TS]

00:26:06   we've all seen our fair share of you [TS]

00:26:07   know like lawyer commercials or [TS]

00:26:09   what-have-you unlikely a television and [TS]

00:26:11   man it took me back to some of the [TS]

00:26:13   terrible ones i remember seeing college [TS]

00:26:14   when I lived in upstate New York and [TS]

00:26:17   it's ok if they just nail it [TS]

00:26:18   it's pretty is totally perfect for you [TS]

00:26:21   know what it is [TS]

00:26:23   so are our first adventure with the [TS]

00:26:28   Ghostbusters is back at the library and [TS]

00:26:31   this is for me this is the moment where [TS]

00:26:33   I realized that I was that I love this [TS]

00:26:35   movie [TS]

00:26:36   unconditionally and it's when it's not [TS]

00:26:40   when they walk in and and talk to the [TS]

00:26:43   library and and and ask her if she's [TS]

00:26:47   menstruating and Bill Murray shouts back [TS]

00:26:49   off man [TS]

00:26:50   I'm a scientist it's not that it's when [TS]

00:26:54   it's when they're walking down the [TS]

00:26:55   stacks and there's a giant pile of books [TS]

00:26:58   in the center of the stacks this is hard [TS]

00:27:00   race symmetrical book stacking just like [TS]

00:27:03   the Philadelphia master violence of 1947 [TS]

00:27:05   you're right no human being which text [TS]

00:27:09   books like this [TS]

00:27:11   that's what I just realized this is the [TS]

00:27:12   this is one of the funniest movies i've [TS]

00:27:14   ever seen [TS]

00:27:15   it's that I worked in a library it's [TS]

00:27:17   true no human would stack books like [TS]

00:27:19   that again because you've got that great [TS]

00:27:20   interplay it's a it's almost star trek [TS]

00:27:24   like in that you've got the you've got [TS]

00:27:27   the the serious person the enthusiastic [TS]

00:27:30   person in that kind of I don't know how [TS]

00:27:33   you describe Bill Murray event under the [TS]

00:27:34   squad but he's that slow easy does he [TS]

00:27:37   doesn't believe it and he's really in it [TS]

00:27:39   for the girls and then and then you've [TS]

00:27:42   got ray who's who is so enthusiastic and [TS]

00:27:45   and Egon who is dead serious and so [TS]

00:27:46   they're walking through the library [TS]

00:27:49   together and and Rick his big plan is [TS]

00:27:52   get her to a ghost [TS]

00:27:55   how would you get a ghost I you know [TS]

00:27:59   whether you work with what you got [TS]

00:28:01   better so they had really thought it out [TS]

00:28:03   so it shows these guys are not are not [TS]

00:28:06   thinking practically but but as they [TS]

00:28:08   walk out of this they get the idea to [TS]

00:28:11   form the the Ghostbusters company which [TS]

00:28:14   wich until they get lucky and there's a [TS]

00:28:17   horrible spate of of ghosts attacks it [TS]

00:28:21   seems like it'd probably a really bad [TS]

00:28:23   idea they get the they get the [TS]

00:28:25   overpriced firehouse but it's going to [TS]

00:28:28   whole gotta try this poll [TS]

00:28:31   ah yeah it's so that's another thing [TS]

00:28:32   that i didn't get when i was a kid which [TS]

00:28:34   is that [TS]

00:28:35   Egon is running down the firehouse [TS]

00:28:37   listing everything that's wrong with it [TS]

00:28:39   right in front of my really is trying to [TS]

00:28:41   get them to drop the price [TS]

00:28:42   yeah absolutely which at the time I just [TS]

00:28:44   thought he was listing the things that [TS]

00:28:45   were bad but no he's playing the real [TS]

00:28:48   estate asian and then rages jumps down [TS]

00:28:50   the pole goes I want to get my stuff and [TS]

00:28:52   stay here tonight [TS]

00:28:53   alright fine oh right yeah that's great [TS]

00:28:58   that's just but i did i had no idea [TS]

00:29:00   because you know I thirteen-year-old kid [TS]

00:29:01   this milk real estate real estate and [TS]

00:29:05   financial and mortgage jokes i was [TS]

00:29:08   flipping underwater mortgages when I was [TS]

00:29:10   13 strange about you you were flipping [TS]

00:29:12   mortgages while underwater [TS]

00:29:15   yes i do is a scuba thing the one thing [TS]

00:29:18   that's out of place there though we we [TS]

00:29:21   brought this up earlier but I mean the [TS]

00:29:22   one thing we didn't mention was the [TS]

00:29:23   nineteen percent interest rate which [TS]

00:29:27   we're not even close to that now I mean [TS]

00:29:29   that's very much very much an early [TS]

00:29:31   nineteen eighties thing right but they [TS]

00:29:35   should have thrown in a joke about you [TS]

00:29:37   know around copy no that was her that [TS]

00:29:39   with that was a little bit later that [TS]

00:29:40   was later later later they should have [TS]

00:29:44   talked about turning co / overthrowing [TS]

00:29:47   the Shah I don't know [TS]

00:29:48   next stop spook central Central Park [TS]

00:29:52   West [TS]

00:29:53   the apartments of Dana Barrett lowest [TS]

00:29:58   ISO Sigourney Weaver uh not exactly [TS]

00:30:02   aliens right still be natural but now [TS]

00:30:07   but but that was two years before aliens [TS]

00:30:10   right or two or three years or aliens [TS]

00:30:12   it's after alien after alien butt but [TS]

00:30:15   aliens came out and Lady six right right [TS]

00:30:17   right yeah no it's after alien bow so [TS]

00:30:20   she's not a totally you know the action [TS]

00:30:23   movie person because the in her role in [TS]

00:30:25   alien is is not is not quite a bit but [TS]

00:30:28   I'm interesting interesting part she's [TS]

00:30:30   she is one of only really what two women [TS]

00:30:33   in this movie unless you count count [TS]

00:30:36   closer where you know a lot of men in [TS]

00:30:41   this movie at you know and she's but [TS]

00:30:43   she's really sympathetic i think it's [TS]

00:30:44   interesting that you know she she sees a [TS]

00:30:48   ghost she sees she sees duel in her [TS]

00:30:50   refrigerator and goes to the [TS]

00:30:53   Ghostbusters you know but she's the one [TS]

00:30:56   who's not putting up with any of Bill [TS]

00:30:57   Murray's crap which i kinda like that [TS]

00:31:00   that she she is not until she's [TS]

00:31:03   possessed [TS]

00:31:04   anyway you know he wants to have her but [TS]

00:31:06   she's not taking any crap from him [TS]

00:31:08   because he's more like a game show host [TS]

00:31:10   right [TS]

00:31:11   she doesn't take any crap from men on [TS]

00:31:13   either side of the spectrum because she [TS]

00:31:14   doesn't put up with Venkman but she also [TS]

00:31:16   doesn't put up with Lewis right well [TS]

00:31:19   she's way before I mean she'd that that [TS]

00:31:21   guy is what you know she isn't yeah no [TS]

00:31:25   wait for sure she doesn't crush him [TS]

00:31:27   though right [TS]

00:31:28   no but it's a very nice she knows how to [TS]

00:31:30   push away people depending on their [TS]

00:31:32   personality types and you know bacon she [TS]

00:31:35   has to be a little sarcastic to and then [TS]

00:31:37   Lewis just kind of like oh honey no no I [TS]

00:31:40   have got to go to rehearsal now you know [TS]

00:31:42   there there's a deleted scene and then [TS]

00:31:44   it comes at the end of the movie but but [TS]

00:31:47   there's a deleted scene where where you [TS]

00:31:53   know poor poor Lewis says hated did you [TS]

00:31:57   and i and and she says to him very [TS]

00:32:00   firmly very very sternly no no we didn't [TS]

00:32:04   know [TS]

00:32:05   No so it's just total you know which is [TS]

00:32:09   totally not true but you know [TS]

00:32:10   yes again as a thirteen-year-old maybe [TS]

00:32:13   it was unclear but it's clear that the [TS]

00:32:16   keymaster in the gatekeeper know [TS]

00:32:18   something had to happen you know those [TS]

00:32:21   names you gotta lock the gate where it [TS]

00:32:23   is done [TS]

00:32:24   whoa the gates nobody knows where the [TS]

00:32:27   key went that was a question teenagers [TS]

00:32:29   were asking themselves for years yeah [TS]

00:32:31   after afterward [TS]

00:32:33   it's true Rick Moranis you know kind of [TS]

00:32:38   funny performance he's not [TS]

00:32:40   I he's he's kind of funny as Louis he's [TS]

00:32:44   absolutely hilarious once he is [TS]

00:32:46   possessed by by the the by vince clortho [TS]

00:32:49   keymaster of gozer at that point it's [TS]

00:32:53   off the charts that he's I don't that's [TS]

00:32:55   the I don't think he's human [TS]

00:32:57   you're quite a humanitarian I don't [TS]

00:32:58   think he's humans scene where he shows [TS]

00:33:01   up on the monitors as the dog and he's [TS]

00:33:03   sniffing the bowl of popcorn for her and [TS]

00:33:07   wiping it heats on his face yeah was [TS]

00:33:09   facing I was basically that guy in high [TS]

00:33:11   school goes are the traveler he will [TS]

00:33:14   come in one of the preachers and forms [TS]

00:33:16   during the rectification of Ultron I the [TS]

00:33:19   traveller came as a large moving toward [TS]

00:33:21   then during the third reconciliation the [TS]

00:33:23   last of the McKettrick supplements they [TS]

00:33:25   chose a new forum forum that of a giant [TS]

00:33:27   sloths are many shops and schools knew [TS]

00:33:30   what it was to be roasting the depths of [TS]

00:33:31   the slower that day I can tell you have [TS]

00:33:33   been running around like kind of this [TS]

00:33:36   weird like his legs are spread wide [TS]

00:33:38   apart and he's kind of hoping around [TS]

00:33:40   looking up at the sky the prisoners will [TS]

00:33:43   be really yeah yeah what that that's [TS]

00:33:46   great and he again he's he's like in [TS]

00:33:48   three scenes right because then he gets [TS]

00:33:50   taken over by the dog and he's gone [TS]

00:33:52   until the end what we see him in the [TS]

00:33:54   party right right well yeah who brought [TS]

00:33:56   who brought the dog which apparently was [TS]

00:33:59   a tall one take and improvised yeah [TS]

00:34:01   that's a good that that's a great seeing [TS]

00:34:03   the party scene because that's where he [TS]

00:34:04   explains that he in order to get a tax [TS]

00:34:07   deduction he's invited clients instead [TS]

00:34:08   of friends let's see what else do we [TS]

00:34:11   have here we have Janine Janine yes our [TS]

00:34:14   other are other female character unless [TS]

00:34:16   you count go sir any pots [TS]

00:34:19   as the UH she's she's like out of [TS]

00:34:22   another movie isn't she's like out of a [TS]

00:34:24   movie from the forties she's aggressive [TS]

00:34:26   the Krusty receptionist but it makes the [TS]

00:34:29   entire that makes that it makes the [TS]

00:34:32   business because you just you know you [TS]

00:34:35   have the Ghostbusters who are more or [TS]

00:34:36   less bumbling along and you have hurt [TS]

00:34:38   you know I I don't take crap from nobody [TS]

00:34:41   with the you know with the Brooklyn [TS]

00:34:42   accent and not great right bill murray [TS]

00:34:45   tells her you know [TS]

00:34:46   hey if you don't like it I'm sure you [TS]

00:34:48   get a job in the food service for [TS]

00:34:50   housekeeping in consultation streets [TS]

00:34:52   yeah yeah she's got she's uh I've quit [TS]

00:34:55   better jobs in this universe there's [TS]

00:34:57   somebody like that at every single job [TS]

00:35:00   you may not see her but she's there [TS]

00:35:03   she's there lurking different always [TS]

00:35:06   there's always one she starts out [TS]

00:35:08   enthusiastic when her job involves [TS]

00:35:11   nothing but sitting and reading because [TS]

00:35:13   she's a big reader she's she's quite [TS]

00:35:14   intellectually and intellectually uh [TS]

00:35:17   polygon is underneath her desk setting [TS]

00:35:19   up her computer for her and edgy [TS]

00:35:23   yes yes that sure that's what he's doing [TS]

00:35:25   down there was that was Adam or was that [TS]

00:35:26   a euphemism yes he was in CS he was [TS]

00:35:30   setting up her pc and who and the I [TS]

00:35:35   don't know what you're talking about but [TS]

00:35:36   the coast unzips his pants and he falls [TS]

00:35:38   out of the bed basically holds listen I [TS]

00:35:41   don't know what you're talking about [TS]

00:35:42   this is rated PG what do you mean uh the [TS]

00:35:47   but later when she's overworked that's [TS]

00:35:49   when she's very funny cuz shes that [TS]

00:35:51   that's what her her fellow Ghost Busters [TS]

00:35:53   becomes Ghostbusters what do you want [TS]

00:35:55   I just love the first the the first [TS]

00:35:58   switch was like yes of course they're [TS]

00:36:00   serious [TS]

00:36:02   hello girls busters yes of course this [TS]

00:36:06   series he do you have no kidding huh [TS]

00:36:13   well just that just give me the address [TS]

00:36:16   yes of course oh they'll be totally [TS]

00:36:18   discreet we and then she just screams [TS]

00:36:24   and slams be a lot it's great [TS]

00:36:26   yeah that's a good moment and that's [TS]

00:36:28   when they're low point right because [TS]

00:36:30   they're eating the chinese food with the [TS]

00:36:31   last of the petty cash never run out of [TS]

00:36:33   money and nobody is ever gonna influence [TS]

00:36:35   busters [TS]

00:36:36   yeah exactly your food it's all we've [TS]

00:36:39   got [TS]

00:36:39   it's a call and they get the call and [TS]

00:36:41   they slide down the polls and they're [TS]

00:36:43   often the active mobile 22 snooty arms [TS]

00:36:48   hotel I guess which is the LA biltmore [TS]

00:36:51   hotel by that it is i've had many a [TS]

00:36:54   rubber chicken and I think that protect [TS]

00:36:57   a little room yeah the studio arms hotel [TS]

00:36:59   I've only had one you outrank me on [TS]

00:37:02   rubber chickens [TS]

00:37:03   oh god I've had so many rubber chickens [TS]

00:37:05   so many i'm actually half rubber are the [TS]

00:37:09   are the chandeliers a lovely Chevalier [TS]

00:37:12   still there yeah i think so where do ya [TS]

00:37:14   chandeliers also i think the those [TS]

00:37:16   restrictions uh I remember actually [TS]

00:37:19   setting up a bar mitzvah I got a I got [TS]

00:37:21   like my one of my many part-time jobs [TS]

00:37:24   there and coming in it was like for kids [TS]

00:37:26   like a kid Bar Mitzvah with with cats is [TS]

00:37:29   the theme or something like that and [TS]

00:37:30   looking at the chandeliers I'm like wait [TS]

00:37:32   a second this is the Ghostbusters hotel [TS]

00:37:35   and I got very very excited and insisted [TS]

00:37:37   that they use one of the portable like [TS]

00:37:39   the disposable cameras to take a picture [TS]

00:37:40   of me like with the with the pose and it [TS]

00:37:44   was yeah that's that's my one story [TS]

00:37:47   about the hotel did you say cat themed [TS]

00:37:49   bar mitzvah it really work at themed bat [TS]

00:37:51   mitzvah excuse me but yes it was cat [TS]

00:37:53   themes they're like little kittens on or [TS]

00:37:56   not real kittens but but paper mache [TS]

00:37:58   kittens on every table like 40 bucks for [TS]

00:38:00   that job that was good for 12 13 [TS]

00:38:03   year-old awesome or what it's like to go [TS]

00:38:05   skiing so it just killed the things [TS]

00:38:08   apart with stories it's the topic today [TS]

00:38:10   will never speak of cats the day and [TS]

00:38:14   then they put a cap [TS]

00:38:15   on a chair and picked it up and dance [TS]

00:38:17   around with it [TS]

00:38:20   no now you are a tomcat are they so the [TS]

00:38:25   open the elevator and and and this is a [TS]

00:38:29   great hole the sequence of the hotel is [TS]

00:38:30   great because the hotel is just trying I [TS]

00:38:32   don't know what the hotel says I know we [TS]

00:38:35   have that it's a ghost let's call the [TS]

00:38:36   Ghostbusters so they come and they they [TS]

00:38:39   almost killed a maid and in center [TS]

00:38:42   Center toilet paper on fire [TS]

00:38:44   don't forget they're all wearing [TS]

00:38:45   particle accelerator always unlicensed [TS]

00:38:48   nuclear accelerator on their backs where [TS]

00:38:52   they got those someone saw a cockroach [TS]

00:38:54   up behind me now [TS]

00:38:55   yes I think they got some bite your head [TS]

00:38:59   off man i think that I i think they got [TS]

00:39:02   some plutonium from Libyans wait a [TS]

00:39:07   second that's a totally different we're [TS]

00:39:09   crossing the streams we are crossing the [TS]

00:39:10   stream see look at that [TS]

00:39:13   so one of one of the the big laugh line [TS]

00:39:16   in this movie is he slimy where where [TS]

00:39:18   ray tries to zap the the green [TS]

00:39:21   gelatinous blob and it just scares them [TS]

00:39:24   away and he runs through the wall and [TS]

00:39:27   runs into bank bancnet charges Venkman [TS]

00:39:29   and we cut away and we see thank them [TS]

00:39:32   laying on the ground is covered in [TS]

00:39:33   ectoplasmic goo and he says he slide me [TS]

00:39:37   and I remember the theater erupting with [TS]

00:39:41   laughter for like a minute and when you [TS]

00:39:44   watch the movie you can actually tell [TS]

00:39:46   that they tried to build in some pause [TS]

00:39:48   knowing that would be a funny line but i [TS]

00:39:51   always thought that the that that there [TS]

00:39:54   are two good jokes after that line that [TS]

00:39:56   nobody ever hears which is actual [TS]

00:39:59   physical content well if this others i [TS]

00:40:01   feel so funky which i think is hilarious [TS]

00:40:03   line by Bill Murray and and then uh ray [TS]

00:40:08   says with bank when he got slimed any [TS]

00:40:11   God says great save some for me save [TS]

00:40:14   some I have to say as a as a kid I did [TS]

00:40:19   have believed I had some Ghostbusters [TS]

00:40:21   action figures including I had like a [TS]

00:40:25   little plastic [TS]

00:40:27   slammer like yeah container full of [TS]

00:40:29   slime full of ectoplasm [TS]

00:40:30   oh nice which was like the awesomest [TS]

00:40:32   stuff if you're like it's I don't [TS]

00:40:34   it's the same stuff they used to make [TS]

00:40:35   like a Teenage Mutant Ninja lose myself [TS]

00:40:37   captain sex-crazy like Google yeah [TS]

00:40:39   usually but it's hard but it's going but [TS]

00:40:41   it's not like sticky or anything it's [TS]

00:40:43   got this weird its i don't know i don't [TS]

00:40:45   understand i don't know how they make it [TS]

00:40:47   maybe it's real active plasm not sure [TS]

00:40:49   but it's awesome its people [TS]

00:40:52   ektoplazm is people ectoplasm is people [TS]

00:40:55   explains a lot [TS]

00:40:57   yeah yeah so they go into the ballroom [TS]

00:40:59   Amanda and destroy it with you got to [TS]

00:41:04   tell you something very important Jason [TS]

00:41:05   don't cross the streams so cross the [TS]

00:41:08   streams it seemed extraneous at the time [TS]

00:41:10   and yet it becomes important to the plot [TS]

00:41:11   later on [TS]

00:41:12   yes it made it seem extreme is he [TS]

00:41:14   deliberately balls off after he doesn't [TS]

00:41:16   by the way [TS]

00:41:17   well no because it's a lot of white plot [TS]

00:41:19   point plot point but it's a it's a good [TS]

00:41:20   joke right because it's you know it [TS]

00:41:22   would be bad wouldn't do that imagine [TS]

00:41:25   every particle in your body exploding at [TS]

00:41:27   the speed of light right bad good tip [TS]

00:41:30   that's what that that scene i did I like [TS]

00:41:33   quit so there's that's a great scene [TS]

00:41:34   because there's there's there's the [TS]

00:41:36   escalating they're tryin there's the [TS]

00:41:37   action right there trying to chase it [TS]

00:41:39   and and and learn how to use this [TS]

00:41:41   equipment and there's nice shooting Tex [TS]

00:41:43   and all that meanwhile they keep cutting [TS]

00:41:45   outside the ballroom and and playing the [TS]

00:41:48   sound effects of glass things being [TS]

00:41:50   destroyed while the wall the uptight [TS]

00:41:52   hotel manager is like actually I think [TS]

00:41:56   literally has a handkerchief and is [TS]

00:41:58   touching it to his forehead mopping off [TS]

00:42:00   his sweat [TS]

00:42:01   well and and you know they're only half [TS]

00:42:03   really trying to catch it right because [TS]

00:42:05   thanksmas got that whole scene with I [TS]

00:42:07   always wanted to try the not replace the [TS]

00:42:08   tablecloth out the flowers flowers [TS]

00:42:11   gentle standing but I you like that sort [TS]

00:42:15   of you know typical for his character i [TS]

00:42:17   guess yeah so they totally are wrecking [TS]

00:42:19   you know again they're hip they're there [TS]

00:42:21   to help the hotel and that they manage [TS]

00:42:24   right like minutes before a wedding [TS]

00:42:25   reception presumably they completely [TS]

00:42:28   destroy the ballroom but they can't it's [TS]

00:42:32   at they capture a ghost [TS]

00:42:34   don't look at the trap my little trap [TS]

00:42:37   perfect [TS]

00:42:38   that I love the design i have to say you [TS]

00:42:41   know Superman production design [TS]

00:42:42   standpoint i love the design of the [TS]

00:42:45   entire the Ghostbusters i love the [TS]

00:42:46   jumpsuit equipment i love the proton fax [TS]

00:42:49   the trap is such a cool in a little box [TS]

00:42:52   with a slide out in the end like that [TS]

00:42:54   like the foot-pumps yeah that you open [TS]

00:42:56   it with I wanted one of those when I was [TS]

00:42:58   a kid I remember that i think i think i [TS]

00:43:00   have to see most of my exposure to the [TS]

00:43:01   special actually came from the fact that [TS]

00:43:02   there was a Ghostbusters cartoon right [TS]

00:43:04   which I definitely saw a lot of the real [TS]

00:43:06   ghostbusters [TS]

00:43:07   yes that's because there was a fake [TS]

00:43:09   Ghostbusters cartoon as well yeah very [TS]

00:43:10   confusing when you're like five years [TS]

00:43:12   old you're like I i thought it's a ghost [TS]

00:43:14   I did they sound differently but I is so [TS]

00:43:18   I had you know some of the toys stuff [TS]

00:43:19   and I think there was at one point a toy [TS]

00:43:21   my proton pack and a toy at trap you can [TS]

00:43:24   get I really wanted to talk about [TS]

00:43:25   everyone else there was it had little [TS]

00:43:27   LED lights but it didn't actually do [TS]

00:43:29   anything very student didn't catch [TS]

00:43:31   ghosts [TS]

00:43:32   I really know you kind of have to hope [TS]

00:43:35   it's the same thing when you get a [TS]

00:43:36   lightsaber as a kid like you secretly [TS]

00:43:38   kind of wanted to turn on and cut off [TS]

00:43:41   somebody's arm there's a lot of people's [TS]

00:43:43   arms of Wicca so I'm so one of the [TS]

00:43:48   things in this in this movie that I i [TS]

00:43:49   think is fascinating we're up to the [TS]

00:43:51   scene where I'm not going to go see it [TS]

00:43:54   actually sort of all kind of goes in a [TS]

00:43:56   rush after after the Maxine I'm but [TS]

00:43:58   Ernie Hudson comes into the firehouse [TS]

00:44:03   and is given the most perfunctory job [TS]

00:44:06   interview ever by Jeanine i love i love [TS]

00:44:09   winston zeddemore he's a great character [TS]

00:44:11   sheet the guys looking for a paycheck he [TS]

00:44:14   is he's it is Ernie Hudson you know I [TS]

00:44:16   don't know if it had been any Murphy and [TS]

00:44:18   they had brought him in sooner and have [TS]

00:44:19   them be more of a wisecracking guy i [TS]

00:44:21   like i like Winston he is a he [TS]

00:44:25   yeah he's a guy and he's got opinions I [TS]

00:44:27   mean he and Ray have a great [TS]

00:44:28   conversation about you know what if that [TS]

00:44:31   book of Revelation is true and what [TS]

00:44:32   they're really seeing is the end of the [TS]

00:44:34   world and and I really like that i [TS]

00:44:37   really like that scene and and when [TS]

00:44:39   jeneane give him the job interview he [TS]

00:44:40   says you know I believe anything you [TS]

00:44:42   want as long as there's a paycheck [TS]

00:44:43   yeah I know I like that he's just he's [TS]

00:44:45   just the smoke was like you know maybe [TS]

00:44:48   these guys need to hire somebody [TS]

00:44:50   and.and he also has what what may be my [TS]

00:44:53   favorite line in the entire movie [TS]

00:44:55   this job isn't worth 11-5 a year that's [TS]

00:44:58   yes yes that's right as it started I [TS]

00:45:01   killed by a God from another dimension [TS]

00:45:03   right he says this job is definitely not [TS]

00:45:06   worth 11-5 and I thought you were gonna [TS]

00:45:08   go with another one which i really like [TS]

00:45:10   which is ray if someone asks you you're [TS]

00:45:12   if you're a god you say yes I always [TS]

00:45:15   expect that to be most Bill Murray's [TS]

00:45:17   line but it's not it's no it's Winston [TS]

00:45:19   now it's Winston's oh that's all good so [TS]

00:45:22   you know yeah it's a great great [TS]

00:45:24   character and he they'll allow them to [TS]

00:45:26   explain there's the hotel tell him about [TS]

00:45:28   the Twinkie where they try to explain [TS]

00:45:30   about what's going on in terms of the as [TS]

00:45:32   a big Queen that's how big it's a good [TS]

00:45:35   character mean it's in it he could have [TS]

00:45:36   easily been the kind of pointless [TS]

00:45:38   extraneous Ghostbuster and i think that [TS]

00:45:40   the reason that he's in the movie is [TS]

00:45:41   because he's got good you know he's got [TS]

00:45:44   good stuff he's good he's a good [TS]

00:45:46   character and and people always make [TS]

00:45:48   jokes about what was that for there's [TS]

00:45:49   the fourth guy but he's actually a great [TS]

00:45:52   character and he brings some it's a nice [TS]

00:45:55   extra interaction to the to the three [TS]

00:45:57   guys to have him I i assume he's there [TS]

00:45:59   mostly because they split them up sort [TS]

00:46:02   of two and two and so they want to they [TS]

00:46:05   want to send him off with Ray and have [TS]

00:46:06   those scenes over there so Reyes by [TS]

00:46:08   himself but but he's a great character [TS]

00:46:11   yeah I i really like him maybe you may [TS]

00:46:14   be my favorite Ernie Hudson so I'm he [TS]

00:46:18   walks in and go and then we can't wait [TS]

00:46:21   antigen right also about the same time [TS]

00:46:24   declaring himself he's he's he's with [TS]

00:46:27   the EPA I laughs what I think that about [TS]

00:46:29   this now because he's yeah he's with the [TS]

00:46:30   EPA in the Reagan administration I guess [TS]

00:46:33   he was a career bureaucrats oh yeah it's [TS]

00:46:37   also such a weird choice for a villain [TS]

00:46:40   the EPA ya rais odd well you know well [TS]

00:46:44   how are you gonna get to chase down the [TS]

00:46:46   Ghostbusters they got halfway through [TS]

00:46:48   right and they're like what we needed [TS]

00:46:50   we need sort of a villain hot brunette [TS]

00:46:52   official yeah I non-supernatural [TS]

00:46:54   antagonist let's call William Atherton [TS]

00:46:57   where can he work [TS]

00:47:00   yeah let's pick up at least some sort of [TS]

00:47:01   government I mean like going on with [TS]

00:47:02   like they couldn't like IRS [TS]

00:47:04   you know everybody hates the IRS that [TS]

00:47:06   could've worked they don't pay their [TS]

00:47:08   taxes clearly was with always the EPA [TS]

00:47:10   the real subject of been you know you [TS]

00:47:13   know politics was the EPA in 1984 a [TS]

00:47:16   great source of of hatred in in the [TS]

00:47:21   world [TS]

00:47:21   well in not the way it is now but don't [TS]

00:47:23   forget the that back in the eighties it [TS]

00:47:26   was you know james watt who is the [TS]

00:47:28   Secretary of Interior was talking about [TS]

00:47:33   things among other things he was talking [TS]

00:47:35   about things like we don't need to worry [TS]

00:47:38   about environmental protection because [TS]

00:47:42   the rapture is coming soon [TS]

00:47:45   he did say that in other words to that [TS]

00:47:46   effect is basically you know the Lord is [TS]

00:47:48   going to in the world soon but but but [TS]

00:47:51   yeah there was some but i think there [TS]

00:47:53   was i don't i don't think that there was [TS]

00:47:55   this sort of regulatory overreach that [TS]

00:48:01   people like me complain about now but [TS]

00:48:03   but i think that was certainly on [TS]

00:48:05   everybody's radar at least a lot of [TS]

00:48:07   people's radar but it is that it was a [TS]

00:48:10   fascinating choice i think i think what [TS]

00:48:12   really what they wanted was you know we [TS]

00:48:14   need we need some government bureaucrat [TS]

00:48:16   to come in and make their lives hell and [TS]

00:48:18   and who better than other the IRS would [TS]

00:48:21   have been a good choice who better than [TS]

00:48:22   the EPA [TS]

00:48:25   ever yeah and he is a certain is just so [TS]

00:48:31   why me and gonna help him [TS]

00:48:34   I'm alter pack i represent the [TS]

00:48:36   Environmental Protection Agency the [TS]

00:48:38   third District great how's it going down [TS]

00:48:40   there are you Peter Venkman yes i'm dr. [TS]

00:48:45   Franklin exactly what are you would dr. [TS]

00:48:47   of mr. Bregman life phd's in [TS]

00:48:50   parapsychology and psychology IC and now [TS]

00:48:54   you catch ghosts [TS]

00:48:56   yeah you could save them and how many [TS]

00:48:59   ghosts if you called mr. monk I'm not at [TS]

00:49:01   liberty to say [TS]

00:49:02   and where do you put these ghosts [TS]

00:49:05   once you catch them into a storage [TS]

00:49:07   facility and with the storage facility [TS]

00:49:09   located on these premises yes [TS]

00:49:13   and may I see this storage facility you [TS]

00:49:17   know and why not mr. Venkman because you [TS]

00:49:20   did not use the magic word [TS]

00:49:22   what is the magic word mr. Beckman [TS]

00:49:26   please and Bill Murray it is righteously [TS]

00:49:31   indignant and should be but you know it [TS]

00:49:36   but but in the end they blow up the [TS]

00:49:39   containment unit he tells the con edison [TS]

00:49:41   got to switch off the switch off the [TS]

00:49:43   grid and the whole thing blow sky-high [TS]

00:49:46   but uh yeah he's so great because he has [TS]

00:49:51   no idea and doesn't care is it even [TS]

00:49:54   unclear what his motivation is other [TS]

00:49:55   than that he wants to he's a busybody [TS]

00:49:58   yeah busybody that's that's what his [TS]

00:50:00   motivation is the guy you want so he [TS]

00:50:02   wants the power right he's got power he [TS]

00:50:04   wants to exercise that our yeah and you [TS]

00:50:07   can tell he's the kind of guy you got it [TS]

00:50:09   emailed you got tormented by people like [TS]

00:50:11   banking right [TS]

00:50:12   yes you can tell man during a criminal [TS]

00:50:15   violation of the Environmental [TS]

00:50:17   Protection arrest them at once [TS]

00:50:19   there's a there's a great there's a [TS]

00:50:20   great scene when they're in the mayor's [TS]

00:50:22   office where of course there's yes it's [TS]

00:50:25   true this man has no dick we can test [TS]

00:50:27   yes we get that scene but there's [TS]

00:50:29   actually i noticed this time watching it [TS]

00:50:30   that the police captain who's there [TS]

00:50:32   you know Peck talks about how his theory [TS]

00:50:36   that the Ghostbusters are drinking [TS]

00:50:37   everybody [TS]

00:50:38   with psychedelic a loser and sensory [TS]

00:50:42   agents and addresses yes and the one [TS]

00:50:45   police captain says the walls of the [TS]

00:50:47   23rd precinct were bleeding [TS]

00:50:50   how do you explain that and it's I i [TS]

00:50:53   just realized that that's he's basically [TS]

00:50:55   giving the finger mr. Peck right her [TS]

00:50:57   yeah I like that line also because i was [TS]

00:51:00   just that I was going to make a comment [TS]

00:51:02   about how I think what what I do like a [TS]

00:51:04   lot about this movie is clearly this is [TS]

00:51:06   an influential movie for a lot of other [TS]

00:51:07   media that I've enjoyed so I was [TS]

00:51:10   watching recent I I just happened to [TS]

00:51:11   look up this and clips from the [TS]

00:51:12   middleman which is a favorite of mine [TS]

00:51:14   and there's a whole episode in which [TS]

00:51:15   that's full of Limoges to Ghostbusters [TS]

00:51:17   yes which begins with a line about the [TS]

00:51:19   walls are you know full-on walls were [TS]

00:51:21   bleeding situation they go to the it's [TS]

00:51:24   like right men university at like Ray [TS]

00:51:26   Parker jr. avenue and and they posed as [TS]

00:51:30   dr. Stan said more you know it's just I [TS]

00:51:33   love that this is a clearly you know [TS]

00:51:35   it's such a cultural touchstone that [TS]

00:51:37   does get referencing among other things [TS]

00:51:38   even I think to a certain degree one of [TS]

00:51:41   my favorite TV shows supernatural has [TS]

00:51:44   some has some you know dues to pay i [TS]

00:51:46   think of every time I see you know [TS]

00:51:47   someone on that show pull out like they [TS]

00:51:49   have like the EMF meters we're scanning [TS]

00:51:51   for like Paranormal Activity like you [TS]

00:51:53   know that there's a clear homage there [TS]

00:51:55   to you know the Ghostbusters era [TS]

00:51:57   oh yeah yeah no I think this is it was [TS]

00:52:00   so popular and successful but I think I [TS]

00:52:05   mean I yet you could argue to a certain [TS]

00:52:07   extent that all those terrible terrible [TS]

00:52:09   reality ghost shows these day oh yeah [TS]

00:52:11   all payments really are ya are all like [TS]

00:52:14   clear callbacks 22 ghostbusters [TS]

00:52:17   ya know I think you're right we should [TS]

00:52:20   talk about when thinking goes to the [TS]

00:52:21   apartment when the keymaster is is is a [TS]

00:52:26   out on the loose right and he goes to [TS]

00:52:30   Dana's apartment for his date and she's [TS]

00:52:33   been possessed by zuul and what's what's [TS]

00:52:36   great about this scene is that it's not [TS]

00:52:39   you know in a modern-day movie it would [TS]

00:52:41   be played very much for like a certain [TS]

00:52:44   amount of dramatic irony right like the [TS]

00:52:46   audience would know she's possessed but [TS]

00:52:48   it would be played like oh he just [TS]

00:52:49   thinks you know she's doing weird things [TS]

00:52:52   right like and it's he he pretty clearly [TS]

00:52:55   like Cotton's on to what's going on [TS]

00:52:57   various immediately clean which I kind [TS]

00:53:00   of love because then he's just playing [TS]

00:53:01   like this woman is possessed by like you [TS]

00:53:03   know a like a power like being out of it [TS]

00:53:05   but to accept that's a different ways he [TS]

00:53:07   say that's a different look for you or [TS]

00:53:09   the same yeah yeah he's cracking jokes [TS]

00:53:11   the whole time can I speak is Dana in [TS]

00:53:14   there [TS]

00:53:14   can I speak to Dana only Zuul easily [TS]

00:53:17   yeah I mean it's played very very much [TS]

00:53:20   for the comedy aspect i really enjoy [TS]

00:53:22   because he's got that like there isn't [TS]

00:53:25   like the bug-eyed like when she starts [TS]

00:53:27   floating above the best she sleeps on [TS]

00:53:28   top of the sheets and no 4 feet meter [TS]

00:53:31   from the covers feed him know you know [TS]

00:53:33   the line the line is I want you inside [TS]

00:53:35   me and he goes like sure I used too many [TS]

00:53:38   people in there are as community police [TS]

00:53:41   to you got at least two yeah I love that [TS]

00:53:43   you know what else to love is this is [TS]

00:53:45   the part where again that means this [TS]

00:53:46   little bit of a sleeves but you can also [TS]

00:53:48   tell like he doesn't cross the line here [TS]

00:53:51   he's not gonna sleep with a possessed [TS]

00:53:52   woman although he's coming he's [TS]

00:53:54   conflicted right i mean he knows it be [TS]

00:53:55   bad for him he sort of does but yes but [TS]

00:53:59   he's conflicted readies like I have a [TS]

00:54:01   rule not to sleep with possess people [TS]

00:54:02   well actually they were regarded as a [TS]

00:54:04   guideline yeah well he keeps on going [TS]

00:54:06   back and forth by it but it's at a [TS]

00:54:07   certain point he just like all right I'm [TS]

00:54:09   gonna take care of you as much as this [TS]

00:54:11   hurts my my sleeves playboy image so [TS]

00:54:14   that he tranquil axes her which [TS]

00:54:15   apparently means he carries tranquilizer [TS]

00:54:17   around with him [TS]

00:54:19   I mean he's a Ghostbuster a little [TS]

00:54:20   ghosts maybe [TS]

00:54:22   wow I I yeah but that's a great scene [TS]

00:54:25   category we were there see right there [TS]

00:54:26   is your special effect by the way but [TS]

00:54:29   the grievers hair [TS]

00:54:30   yes I by like I think I think he may [TS]

00:54:33   have run into a problem with the with [TS]

00:54:35   the FDA there because when he easy PhD [TS]

00:54:39   in psychology right yes I don't cut he's [TS]

00:54:42   not a psychiatrist so the injector with [TS]

00:54:45   with with a powerful seven with the [TS]

00:54:47   Thorazine right yes yeah yeah with the [TS]

00:54:50   he would have a problem with your DEA [TS]

00:54:52   yeah yeah yeah you're going to jail [TS]

00:54:55   it's very unscrupulous I mean they did [TS]

00:54:57   go to officially the fortunately v the [TS]

00:55:00   the building exploded Slater so have a [TS]

00:55:04   wrap that on [TS]

00:55:05   that got that cleared up pretty much any [TS]

00:55:07   evidence she's well well but that is [TS]

00:55:10   that is a great scene and and he is he's [TS]

00:55:13   conflicted and she's there is no dana [TS]

00:55:16   only so we'll only zuul are you the [TS]

00:55:18   keymaster I'm friend of this [TS]

00:55:19   yeah he asked me to come over yeah yeah [TS]

00:55:22   well that's that's that's good stuff [TS]

00:55:24   I mean that's bill I mean it's bill [TS]

00:55:25   murray at Bill Murray best right this [TS]

00:55:27   sort of like I'm just rolling with the [TS]

00:55:29   punches [TS]

00:55:30   I'm just you know I'm written spot is [TS]

00:55:36   this a trick question [TS]

00:55:39   I guess the roses working take me now [TS]

00:55:42   subcreature we never talk anymore [TS]

00:55:47   yeah I make it a rule never to get [TS]

00:55:51   involved with possess people [TS]

00:55:52   mhm mhm actually it's more of a [TS]

00:55:56   guideline a rule you know I can flip [TS]

00:55:58   what you inside but had no I can't [TS]

00:56:05   sounds like you got at least two people [TS]

00:56:06   in there already might be a little [TS]

00:56:08   crowded so one topic I want to talk [TS]

00:56:12   about it in all this way they're working [TS]

00:56:13   on the on the active Beal and pecks [TS]

00:56:16   walking into the the firehouse and all [TS]

00:56:18   that one thing that strikes me about [TS]

00:56:20   this movie because it is from the [TS]

00:56:23   eighties everyone smoked everyone [TS]

00:56:26   smoking you're exactly right at this [TS]

00:56:27   time whereas that definitely grab mode [TS]

00:56:29   that mean you know it's not just it's [TS]

00:56:32   not just an effect these days of [TS]

00:56:34   somebody smoking a movie it's gonna mean [TS]

00:56:35   something yeah it suggests something [TS]

00:56:37   right everybody in this movie and you [TS]

00:56:39   think about all these things where [TS]

00:56:40   they're like they're doing all this [TS]

00:56:41   stuff we're really they probably [TS]

00:56:42   shouldn't be smoking right like with [TS]

00:56:44   like an unlicensed nuclear accelerator [TS]

00:56:46   on your back maybe not the best time to [TS]

00:56:48   light up a cigarette so so here's the [TS]

00:56:50   trap so whatever i'm going to say and [TS]

00:56:52   this is my this is my little essay [TS]

00:56:53   portion of the of the of the program i [TS]

00:56:57   think there is a reason and it's that [TS]

00:57:00   I'm with the jumpsuits & ray is like [TS]

00:57:04   working on the car engine is smoking a [TS]

00:57:06   cigarette with the jumpsuits i mean i-i [TS]

00:57:08   i-i wish i wish there wasn't so much [TS]

00:57:10   smoking in this movie it's actually one [TS]

00:57:12   of the things that kind of turns me off [TS]

00:57:13   about it in hindsight but but they are [TS]

00:57:16   like plumbers hey there's really this [TS]

00:57:18   attempt to make these guys we first see [TS]

00:57:20   is like you know their ivory tower [TS]

00:57:24   huh you know fraud fraudulent professors [TS]

00:57:26   and then as Ghostbusters that we're [TS]

00:57:29   supposed to kind of seemed like working [TS]

00:57:31   class guys they're like the guys their [TS]

00:57:33   blue-collar slobs that you know they [TS]

00:57:36   they got their their sleeves rolled up [TS]

00:57:38   there where the jumpsuits there they're [TS]

00:57:40   fixing the you know the fixing the [TS]

00:57:42   engine of the car and all of that and [TS]

00:57:45   and you know pigments got the clipboard [TS]

00:57:47   and he comes in he smoking he's like you [TS]

00:57:50   know they'll play by visa [TS]

00:57:52   we got a free repeater over here here's [TS]

00:57:54   the next order sheet and all this stuff [TS]

00:57:56   all of a sudden these guys have gone [TS]

00:57:59   from being you know a columbia [TS]

00:58:01   university professors to being a [TS]

00:58:05   plumber's ghost plumbers I guess but you [TS]

00:58:08   that was the original original title of [TS]

00:58:11   the movie Ghost Hunters am I am i off [TS]

00:58:13   base here I mean I I feel like that was [TS]

00:58:15   like done specifically to give them kind [TS]

00:58:17   of a blue-collar feeling it does seem to [TS]

00:58:19   happen at a specific point i noticed [TS]

00:58:21   very there's a very distinct like you [TS]

00:58:23   said there's not much of it in earlier [TS]

00:58:26   in the week they're not doing their [TS]

00:58:27   columbia right right and all of a sudden [TS]

00:58:29   there is this which I know it is very [TS]

00:58:31   it's very stark the contrast between the [TS]

00:58:33   two of them at and I don't know if if [TS]

00:58:35   that's why or it's just you know hey we [TS]

00:58:38   got money in our tobacco company well I [TS]

00:58:40   were risking our lives doing all this [TS]

00:58:42   stuff to write write with smoking is [TS]

00:58:43   probably not what's going on right the [TS]

00:58:45   ghost will kill its first I don't enjoy [TS]

00:58:48   it [TS]

00:58:48   I don't know but it's really noticeable [TS]

00:58:49   it's very strange oh yeah I love the [TS]

00:58:54   scene of a jail i wanted to talk about [TS]

00:58:56   that is it to get through my day of a [TS]

00:58:59   briefly airplane a little I don't know [TS]

00:59:01   why there's definitely that comedic sort [TS]

00:59:03   of atmosphere to it with its its subtle [TS]

00:59:07   its subtle right the background [TS]

00:59:08   characters right they got all the gods [TS]

00:59:10   to hearing all the way Prince and [TS]

00:59:12   there's something in that that's very [TS]

00:59:13   much got that slapstick comedy words [TS]

00:59:15   like there's not much acknowledgement of [TS]

00:59:17   the fact that it's bizarre that [TS]

00:59:19   everybody thought watching them you know [TS]

00:59:22   it's just sort of taken it yet let's [TS]

00:59:23   roll with it will just keep going you [TS]

00:59:25   know I i think it's a lovely moment [TS]

00:59:27   because it's kind of surreal and not [TS]

00:59:29   overplayed there's lots of exposition in [TS]

00:59:32   there right that's where he got explains [TS]

00:59:33   that they that that they the cult of [TS]

00:59:36   gozer you know built this spook central [TS]

00:59:39   and had the crazy construction and [TS]

00:59:41   worshipped animal or sacrificed animals [TS]

00:59:44   and all that stuff but there are also [TS]

00:59:47   some great jokes because that there's [TS]

00:59:48   actually if you look carefully at at at [TS]

00:59:52   Bill Murray especially when I went [TS]

00:59:55   occurrences you never studied that [TS]

00:59:59   they're totally [TS]

00:59:59   they're totally [TS]

01:00:00   just laughing through that entire scene [TS]

01:00:01   they they they can't keep a straight [TS]

01:00:03   face and it just as it's in the movie [TS]

01:00:05   because I guess that's that's as good as [TS]

01:00:07   a god but then he comes back with goes [TS]

01:00:10   our worship for instance is never [TS]

01:00:11   studied like he's scored points on each [TS]

01:00:14   other and meanwhile these all these [TS]

01:00:16   random like guys in the hoosegow or just [TS]

01:00:18   kind of listing is the Ghostbusters have [TS]

01:00:21   these whole arguments and at one point [TS]

01:00:23   said Morris like I gotta get my own [TS]

01:00:25   lawyer I gotta get out of here I I [TS]

01:00:27   wasn't even there let me out and Bill [TS]

01:00:31   Murray sings Santa Claus is coming to [TS]

01:00:33   town but he seems the spooky version to [TS]

01:00:36   scare all of the guys from the jail who [TS]

01:00:38   are listening in to their conversations [TS]

01:00:40   will be good for goodness sake [TS]

01:00:42   whoa somebody's we have to get out of [TS]

01:00:45   here we've got one shot your son where [TS]

01:00:48   hey [TS]

01:00:50   Oh hold it and we actually go to go [TS]

01:00:52   before a federal judge and say that some [TS]

01:00:54   moly Babylonian God is going to drop in [TS]

01:00:56   on Central Park West and start tearing [TS]

01:00:57   up the city Sumerian not baloney [TS]

01:01:00   yea big difference it's just it's a [TS]

01:01:02   crazy scene because it is doing comedy [TS]

01:01:04   character comedy its advancing the plot [TS]

01:01:07   a lot of exposition and there's the [TS]

01:01:10   surreal aspect of the fact that they're [TS]

01:01:12   surrounded by like 15 prisoners while [TS]

01:01:15   there while they're looking at [TS]

01:01:17   blueprints that they've apparently been [TS]

01:01:18   allowed to have in the jail cell which [TS]

01:01:20   makes no sense because you you can't cut [TS]

01:01:24   a prisoner with the blueprint right when [TS]

01:01:26   you get the sense that the Ghostbusters [TS]

01:01:28   have been placed in the jail reluctantly [TS]

01:01:30   right that although the EPA guy wants [TS]

01:01:32   him in jail everybody else you know that [TS]

01:01:35   presumably they're well-known and [TS]

01:01:36   they're kind of like so there is that [TS]

01:01:38   great scene that we sort of glossed over [TS]

01:01:39   a little bit where they come and shut [TS]

01:01:41   down the reactor where you got that I [TS]

01:01:42   love that they've got the con Edison guy [TS]

01:01:44   there who is like I'd never say never [TS]

01:01:46   seen anything like this and he's you [TS]

01:01:48   know in the hard hat is just like I'm [TS]

01:01:49   just doing what they tell me to you know [TS]

01:01:51   you can see thinks it's a bad idea yeah [TS]

01:01:53   but i mean i kind of like that's the [TS]

01:01:56   same sort of dichotomy right that we're [TS]

01:01:58   talking about with the you know I think [TS]

01:02:00   there's like the blue-collar like like [TS]

01:02:02   stick together this right to a certain [TS]

01:02:04   extent like utility guys like I don't [TS]

01:02:06   want to screw these guys they're doing [TS]

01:02:07   their job but yeah you know I gotta do [TS]

01:02:09   my job or else I'll get fired and [TS]

01:02:10   everything the prison's kind of [TS]

01:02:12   well you know they're not really a [TS]

01:02:15   thread or anything they're just they're [TS]

01:02:17   just doing this thing there they provide [TS]

01:02:19   a public service [TS]

01:02:20   yeah exactly so Alfred diehard comes and [TS]

01:02:23   freeze them from themselves here wants [TS]

01:02:25   to see the baby gotta go [TS]

01:02:27   the bear was to rap with me about some [TS]

01:02:28   things seen the mayor's office which we [TS]

01:02:32   touched on earlier are one of the weird [TS]

01:02:35   things and it is that the Cardinal comes [TS]

01:02:36   in yeah what should idea and it's silent [TS]

01:02:40   right he there like talking about you [TS]

01:02:42   know what does it all mean and where is [TS]

01:02:44   that coming from and the Cardinal walks [TS]

01:02:45   into their like haha he will have the [TS]

01:02:48   answer and instead he's just like how [TS]

01:02:50   you doing let me tell you that's the [TS]

01:02:52   thing that you know I went out I [TS]

01:02:54   remember the first time I saw it with my [TS]

01:02:55   mom who's kind of anti-catholic and and [TS]

01:02:59   she's and I remember what you want to [TS]

01:03:01   chat like school I i went to Catholic [TS]

01:03:03   school but my mom is kind of [TS]

01:03:04   anti-catholic there's that you know [TS]

01:03:09   which went when the Cardinal comes in [TS]

01:03:11   and he was probably an archbishop right [TS]

01:03:14   the mayor kiss his ring and I guess I [TS]

01:03:17   remember my mom went uh Wow of course [TS]

01:03:20   she groaned over over the punchline to [TS]

01:03:23   that bit was house killing Mike do [TS]

01:03:26   thanks for coming Mike how's it going [TS]

01:03:28   Lenny severity we're gonna fix here and [TS]

01:03:31   and of course you know it turns out is [TS]

01:03:34   it [TS]

01:03:34   oh no don't quote me on this the church [TS]

01:03:37   isn't going to take it's a very [TS]

01:03:38   political scene oh yeah you know the [TS]

01:03:40   church isn't going to take an official [TS]

01:03:42   position on whether this is somehow you [TS]

01:03:44   know the end of the world but you know I [TS]

01:03:47   personally personally [TS]

01:03:49   yeah so that I love that scene it's it's [TS]

01:03:51   very--it's ridge road down i give me of [TS]

01:03:53   a remind me the scene from another one [TS]

01:03:56   of my favorite movies which I think we [TS]

01:03:57   discussed in a previous podcast Hudson [TS]

01:03:59   Hawk where there's a will there's a [TS]

01:04:01   scene with with the Aqua Cardinal [TS]

01:04:04   talking to someone he goes all the Pope [TS]

01:04:05   warned me never to trust the CIA has it [TS]

01:04:09   has that great little like yeah yeah [TS]

01:04:12   sure he's using the church but he's just [TS]

01:04:14   an ordinary share every time you had [TS]

01:04:15   been around a podcast you're gonna have [TS]

01:04:17   to bring up hugs to talk [TS]

01:04:19   it'sit's require its narrative yes i [TS]

01:04:22   know this is a great scene and then we [TS]

01:04:24   in addition to you know [TS]

01:04:26   yes this man has no dick and all that we [TS]

01:04:28   we have uh you-you-you Letty you'll save [TS]

01:04:34   the lives of millions of registered [TS]

01:04:35   voters he makes bank and makes the [TS]

01:04:37   political appeal and the mayor [TS]

01:04:39   calculates it basically does the right [TS]

01:04:41   thing which is like well you know I [TS]

01:04:43   could throw the Ghostbusters in jail and [TS]

01:04:45   have no idea what to do they seem to [TS]

01:04:47   think they know what to do [TS]

01:04:49   so let's go with that speaking of call [TS]

01:04:53   back [TS]

01:04:53   did anyone maybe it's just me again but [TS]

01:04:55   that reminded me greatly of a Miracle on [TS]

01:05:00   thirty-fourth Street where the judges [TS]

01:05:03   trying to figure out whether or not the [TS]

01:05:04   weather out this analytical calculation [TS]

01:05:06   political maybe guys like you know I [TS]

01:05:09   know these guys are all the voters and [TS]

01:05:10   think about you know what the kids will [TS]

01:05:12   say and all that but they were in there [TS]

01:05:13   was definitely a weird sort of sympatico [TS]

01:05:15   vibe going on there for you write that [TS]

01:05:17   in the end in the end I and there's that [TS]

01:05:19   the cynical aspect of it that was [TS]

01:05:21   actually funny which is yes [TS]

01:05:22   the world may be ending the lives of [TS]

01:05:24   everybody in on planet Earth may be on [TS]

01:05:26   the line and in the end it's kind of a [TS]

01:05:29   political decision by the mayor of New [TS]

01:05:31   York City that that ends up solving it [TS]

01:05:34   is like you know we'll go with the [TS]

01:05:36   Ghostbusters get the easy guy out of [TS]

01:05:38   here [TS]

01:05:38   that's how things in New York gets it [TS]

01:05:40   right there that that's how I understand [TS]

01:05:42   things [TS]

01:05:42   yeah i'm going to miss him when i get [TS]

01:05:44   done understand your friend pastor and [TS]

01:05:48   we never seen William averaging again [TS]

01:05:50   except silently on the street where he's [TS]

01:05:52   covered in marshmallow it's a lovely end [TS]

01:05:55   with ignominious and for mr. Peck [TS]

01:05:58   ok so that the queue up the music and [TS]

01:06:00   they run some red lights and they go we [TS]

01:06:03   have a can we have a minute about about [TS]

01:06:05   Ray Parker jr. rape and how awesome that [TS]

01:06:08   song is alright alright that's not the [TS]

01:06:10   song they play right here but yeah [TS]

01:06:12   that's let's talk about let's talk about [TS]

01:06:14   Ray Parker jr. I hear that he stole huey [TS]

01:06:17   lewis is baseline right that is the the [TS]

01:06:20   same price borrow borrowed car and it [TS]

01:06:23   will return all right we'll return it [TS]

01:06:25   I i mean that that song besides being [TS]

01:06:28   arguably one of the most iconic things [TS]

01:06:29   from this movie oh yeah it's just that [TS]

01:06:32   no I i started playing in my car because [TS]

01:06:34   I happen to have it on a obviously I can [TS]

01:06:36   mp3 or something I started playing in my [TS]

01:06:38   car and segments a really good song is [TS]

01:06:40   catchy is what I was just and I was just [TS]

01:06:43   reading through the trivia on the IMDb [TS]

01:06:45   page about how he had a real trouble [TS]

01:06:47   coming up with it until he saw the [TS]

01:06:48   commercial rights they apparently were [TS]

01:06:49   showing on TV as part of the publicity [TS]

01:06:52   campaign like the the actual [TS]

01:06:55   Ghostbusters you know [TS]

01:06:57   yes like you know you haunted by a spook [TS]

01:06:59   Specter i do that and and he really [TS]

01:07:01   envisioned it as a jingle and like it [TS]

01:07:03   you know came right out there and it's [TS]

01:07:06   just I don't know there's something [TS]

01:07:07   about that song that is just it's got [TS]

01:07:09   everything right like you know weird [TS]

01:07:11   sound effects at the beginning yeah [TS]

01:07:12   crazy like you know Beverly Hills cops [TS]

01:07:15   in yeah I have an AT&T without it's just [TS]

01:07:19   so good and what you don't know is it [TS]

01:07:21   probably is that on the soundtrack there [TS]

01:07:23   they put the instrumental version of it [TS]

01:07:26   which meant that every episode of dr. [TS]

01:07:28   Demento for 10 years featured some guy [TS]

01:07:30   singing fake lyrics over this the the [TS]

01:07:33   theme from ghostbusters because that [TS]

01:07:36   everybody had the instrumental version [TS]

01:07:38   of ghostbusters [TS]

01:07:39   just the other day this hat in my house [TS]

01:07:44   my kids tried to make who you gonna call [TS]

01:07:49   joke and they got it wrong which is the [TS]

01:07:51   funniest part they're like who is it [TS]

01:07:54   that you're going to talk to on the [TS]

01:07:55   phone [TS]

01:07:56   no you should have said ghostbusters but [TS]

01:07:59   that's not that nevermind 0 plus they're [TS]

01:08:02   trying to hurt you i lying they know [TS]

01:08:05   they know that their mother has taught [TS]

01:08:07   them actually very specifically that [TS]

01:08:08   whenever anybody asks you who you're [TS]

01:08:10   going to call there is only one answer [TS]

01:08:13   to be given ghostbusters [TS]

01:08:15   it's the it is the only attracted only [TS]

01:08:17   in trail [TS]

01:08:19   ok so they go to spook central they run [TS]

01:08:21   the red lights in the national guard and [TS]

01:08:23   all of that and I funny fall into a pit [TS]

01:08:26   of money to do before they get out for [TS]

01:08:28   their big fig and the air crowd is [TS]

01:08:29   cheering and shaded Ghostbusters and and [TS]

01:08:31   and Eggman introduces you know raised a [TS]

01:08:35   lot of the Ghostbusters and then the [TS]

01:08:37   ground opens up and swallows them whole [TS]

01:08:39   no CGI there no no they built like a [TS]

01:08:41   nice nice movable side you have a [TS]

01:08:44   special effects scene they built a [TS]

01:08:45   sidewalk [TS]

01:08:46   with a crack but that's nice that they [TS]

01:08:47   think they're so cool and then [TS]

01:08:49   immediately there swallowed but they get [TS]

01:08:52   out they get out they climb out of the [TS]

01:08:54   pit and and then immediately have to [TS]

01:08:57   walk up all the flights of stairs to get [TS]

01:09:00   to be a to get to the penthouse on tell [TS]

01:09:02   me just tell me when its twenty so i can [TS]

01:09:04   throw up huh [TS]

01:09:06   so you know very heroic and they get it [TS]

01:09:11   to the top and uh and uh we get to see [TS]

01:09:14   you go sir [TS]

01:09:17   the the terror dogs get on their little [TS]

01:09:20   pedestals and and they open the they [TS]

01:09:23   open the gate and incomes goes or who it [TS]

01:09:26   looks like either David Bowie or a I'm [TS]

01:09:29   gonna go David Laura and Eastern [TS]

01:09:31   European model oppose or yeah yeah why [TS]

01:09:34   can't it be both it actually can it was [TS]

01:09:37   yeah it is [TS]

01:09:38   she's from lakewood Czechoslovakia or [TS]

01:09:40   something yeah its Lobby or one of the [TS]

01:09:42   one of them one of them slots itself is [TS]

01:09:44   something that doesn't exist and made up [TS]

01:09:45   and then they dubbed in of voice but [TS]

01:09:47   that was that that's kind of cool weird [TS]

01:09:50   moment where where's that more says I [TS]

01:09:53   thought goes there was a man and and it [TS]

01:09:55   races or Egon says it's at whatever it [TS]

01:09:57   wants to be that it really it's kind of [TS]

01:09:59   off-putting it's like this is not you [TS]

01:10:02   know this is not a a person this is a [TS]

01:10:05   supernatural being in their bubble wrap [TS]

01:10:08   outfit but scratching their giant terror [TS]

01:10:11   dogs on the ahead and yet ray still [TS]

01:10:14   tries to talk to it sensibly yeah he go [TS]

01:10:18   get array why the authority of this city [TS]

01:10:21   pony and state of New York please return [TS]

01:10:25   to the nearest convenient parallel [TS]

01:10:27   dimension [TS]

01:10:28   that's great ray thanks i'm going to [TS]

01:10:30   tell people off in the next one [TS]

01:10:31   yeah from now on yeah please please [TS]

01:10:34   return to your your home dimension or [TS]

01:10:36   the nearest convenient parallel to [TS]

01:10:37   mention are you a god no and died and I [TS]

01:10:43   or at least be pushed around by purple [TS]

01:10:48   lightning and that was kind of lame that [TS]

01:10:51   you think but little little wonder where [TS]

01:10:53   they got that from yeah well almost [TS]

01:10:55   there he goes or must think that humans [TS]

01:10:57   are even more fragile than [TS]

01:10:59   we actually are that the purple [TS]

01:11:01   lightning will kill them bitches toast [TS]

01:11:05   yeah but so they get out their stuff and [TS]

01:11:07   they shoot and the shooter and and she [TS]

01:11:09   disappears which is interesting so you [TS]

01:11:13   know that they try to use the tools that [TS]

01:11:14   they've got may they may think they've [TS]

01:11:17   won its Miller time and only then do we [TS]

01:11:20   have the thing that that maybe makes [TS]

01:11:22   this movie a as much of a classic as it [TS]

01:11:27   is and the reason i think people [TS]

01:11:28   remember it so finally other than the [TS]

01:11:30   song is is they're given the option to [TS]

01:11:34   choose and parish and then j edgar [TS]

01:11:37   hoover appears to destroy them all so I [TS]

01:11:40   mean you can see when you watch that [TS]

01:11:42   seemed to you can see that everybody [TS]

01:11:43   else is keeping it out of their heads [TS]

01:11:45   and you can see dan Aykroyd its face as [TS]

01:11:47   he kind of it enters a reverie about his [TS]

01:11:49   time roasting marshmallows by the fire [TS]

01:11:50   at Camp locanda can't hurt anybody and [TS]

01:11:54   it just popped in there and then we if [TS]

01:11:58   the state parchment which is I mean [TS]

01:12:01   which its alluded to earlier in the film [TS]

01:12:03   which I really enjoyed when Dana's [TS]

01:12:04   Dana's unpacking her girls she's got a [TS]

01:12:07   bag before and there's a sign somewhere [TS]

01:12:10   so i can add a billboard for state pop a [TS]

01:12:14   little bit like the Michelin what what a [TS]

01:12:16   wonderful fantastic creatively purpose [TS]

01:12:20   is to have a godzilla-like creature [TS]

01:12:23   accepted this adorable Michelin Man like [TS]

01:12:26   marshmallow man rampaging through the [TS]

01:12:29   streets of New York smashing churches [TS]

01:12:32   and stepping on people and with a smile [TS]

01:12:34   on his face yeah I'm just guns line here [TS]

01:12:38   where it's like Peters like all right [TS]

01:12:40   what do you got [TS]

01:12:40   no sorry I'm terrified beyond the [TS]

01:12:42   capacity for rational log yeah yeah yeah [TS]

01:12:46   cause Ray's got bye-bye [TS]

01:12:47   and then he got his terrified beyond the [TS]

01:12:49   capacity for rational thought and then [TS]

01:12:53   bagman goes nobody steps on a church in [TS]

01:12:55   my own mother cost [TS]

01:12:58   yeah I way past that church again new [TS]

01:13:01   york city would pass the truth I was [TS]

01:13:02   like nobody steps on a church in my town [TS]

01:13:05   entrance [TS]

01:13:06   uh that's not of one of their better [TS]

01:13:08   special effects it's like a picture now [TS]

01:13:10   the picture of a foot it's like yeah [TS]

01:13:12   that's [TS]

01:13:12   but really crushed that church yeah you [TS]

01:13:14   show on foot but then a day we don't [TS]

01:13:17   catches on fire as positron packs and we [TS]

01:13:19   can we can roast the marshmallow man not [TS]

01:13:22   how I expected to go out roasted by a [TS]

01:13:24   hundred foot tall marshmallow man but [TS]

01:13:27   that I mean yeah i think the marshmallow [TS]

01:13:29   man is so I cannot stop laughing when i [TS]

01:13:32   see that every single time I can't stop [TS]

01:13:33   laughing because he's got a big smile [TS]

01:13:36   he's got his little hat he's very happy [TS]

01:13:38   and he's walking down the streets of New [TS]

01:13:40   York crushing crushing taxis and [TS]

01:13:43   smashing buildings its arm and that is [TS]

01:13:47   that is great and then and then he's [TS]

01:13:50   quite horrifying right when he gets the [TS]

01:13:51   building and he looks up and he goes [TS]

01:13:52   right yeah I go home god I hope this is [TS]

01:13:57   bad [TS]

01:13:58   um and so they cross the streams and she [TS]

01:14:03   said that was a battery yeah you know [TS]

01:14:05   that turned out that turned out that it [TS]

01:14:06   really wasn't that big of a deal across [TS]

01:14:08   the streams was it [TS]

01:14:09   I mean yeah you can close a dimensional [TS]

01:14:11   portal but we need there was no it's [TS]

01:14:14   definitely very tired person will [TS]

01:14:15   survive [TS]

01:14:16   yeah this job not worth 11-5 year again [TS]

01:14:19   get a Wilson said were asked for a raise [TS]

01:14:23   you know that was a pretty big explosion [TS]

01:14:26   to that followed [TS]

01:14:27   yeah well I really was it was a [TS]

01:14:29   cross-dimensional explosion in fact well [TS]

01:14:32   there was a lot of fire out therein in [TS]

01:14:34   new york city right that's true [TS]

01:14:36   Andrew and it really to this day I don't [TS]

01:14:40   understand how it was that all of those [TS]

01:14:43   people were covered in goo & with [TS]

01:14:45   everything else fellow XLR thing except [TS]

01:14:48   for bankin we just had to have been like [TS]

01:14:50   a country was that it was that it was [TS]

01:14:52   that a contractual thing only thing [TS]

01:14:54   already didn't want to be covered in [TS]

01:14:55   shaving cream [TS]

01:14:56   yeah I don't know it makes you wonder [TS]

01:14:58   there is there is that moment where he [TS]

01:14:59   appears and and at they asked how he is [TS]

01:15:02   Jesus fine and dandy it looks it up like [TS]

01:15:05   why are you not covered in goo and it's [TS]

01:15:08   never explained [TS]

01:15:10   one of the tragedies left left as an [TS]

01:15:13   exercise for the audio the audience [TS]

01:15:15   where was bangin that he that he didn't [TS]

01:15:19   get covered in marshmallow and then we [TS]

01:15:22   were super very sad that the Dana [TS]

01:15:24   Barrett clearly it just smells like the [TS]

01:15:26   burned-up dog here but in fact Dana and [TS]

01:15:30   Lewis survived isn't that nice that when [TS]

01:15:33   the terror dogs are are are burned up [TS]

01:15:36   they they leave you're like humans the [TS]

01:15:39   little human shell inside little human [TS]

01:15:42   nougat delicious [TS]

01:15:46   that's exactly what I want my candy in [TS]

01:15:48   your candy terror dog [TS]

01:15:50   there's a hand side not not my Halloween [TS]

01:15:53   carretera dog shell on the outside [TS]

01:15:56   creamy human nugget in the end of course [TS]

01:15:59   over on the side [TS]

01:16:00   ok so we get this this entire film this [TS]

01:16:03   hour and 40 45 minute film [TS]

01:16:06   yes we're asked to accept that there are [TS]

01:16:08   there are ghosts in in the New York City [TS]

01:16:11   Library that there is this Marian God [TS]

01:16:14   that there was a there was a death cult [TS]

01:16:16   in the nineteen-twenties that had the [TS]

01:16:19   the resources to to build this this [TS]

01:16:23   building with the liquid selenium core [TS]

01:16:26   yeah um yeah but you gotta I I'm willing [TS]

01:16:29   to accept all that but i am absolutely [TS]

01:16:31   unwilling to this day to accept that [TS]

01:16:34   those people were able to survive and [TS]

01:16:37   end up in in little little terrier dog [TS]

01:16:39   shells that at that they lost me right [TS]

01:16:41   that's where that was it makes it that [TS]

01:16:43   was it for me [TS]

01:16:44   what how was it how is it that they [TS]

01:16:45   could end up in the in ridiculous [TS]

01:16:48   ridiculous absurd [TS]

01:16:50   yeah yeah you know bad luck by the way [TS]

01:16:54   for the for the ghosts are worshipers [TS]

01:16:56   that you know they tried to make those [TS]

01:16:58   are coming in in the twenties and they [TS]

01:17:00   failed but uh you know that there's a [TS]

01:17:04   moment there which makes me think of it [TS]

01:17:05   as a it kind of comes across almost like [TS]

01:17:08   a doctor who episode to me a little bit [TS]

01:17:10   also I don't know there's something [TS]

01:17:13   about the strychnine survive maybe [TS]

01:17:14   because there was an episode of doctor [TS]

01:17:15   who would like a vampire State Building [TS]

01:17:16   was there in the last few years now and [TS]

01:17:18   like the twenties [TS]

01:17:19   yeah they just don't think about it [TS]

01:17:20   struck me as like well you know we're [TS]

01:17:23   going to use science and [TS]

01:17:24   gonna turn out ok everybody thought was [TS]

01:17:26   dead I turns out they're alive I pretty [TS]

01:17:28   cool [TS]

01:17:28   everyone's going buddy dies damn second [TS]

01:17:31   a second viewing of ghostbusters [TS]

01:17:34   what do you think go and you know as a [TS]

01:17:36   relative know Jason I knowledgeable can [TS]

01:17:39   lure can summon up in just couple words [TS]

01:17:42   by saying busting makes me feel good [TS]

01:17:45   alright that's that's a nice verdict [TS]

01:17:48   will you watch it a third time someday i [TS]

01:17:51   think i will i'm not not perhaps [TS]

01:17:52   immediately but right i think i would [TS]

01:17:55   certainly not say now i will never watch [TS]

01:17:57   ghostbusters again alright because i [TS]

01:17:59   would hurt your feelings quite a big if [TS]

01:18:02   not invited to this I may never watch [TS]

01:18:04   real genius and I hate to break it up [TS]

01:18:06   but I I don't not not the only wanted me [TS]

01:18:09   out in fact ok now i will never want [TS]

01:18:11   your body and you're paying for your [TS]

01:18:13   band you don't deserve it you don't [TS]

01:18:15   appreciate you don't deserve it i will [TS]

01:18:20   and you will not you can enjoy him in [TS]

01:18:22   this movie [TS]

01:18:23   yes i would I heard you know I i do love [TS]

01:18:26   diary I say we knew that about you and I [TS]

01:18:29   read positive feelings about [TS]

01:18:30   Ghostbusters very positive I i will [TS]

01:18:33   indeed call on the Ghostbusters again [TS]

01:18:35   for a for a feel-good funny movie [TS]

01:18:37   they're ready to believe you [TS]

01:18:39   they are sometimes they do then are you [TS]

01:18:44   going to watch ghostbusters [TS]

01:18:46   15 more times before you die had become [TS]

01:18:48   a ghost i will and and i'll watch it [TS]

01:18:51   with my children but you know I was [TS]

01:18:52   thinking as I was watching it in [TS]

01:18:54   preparation for this for this podcast [TS]

01:18:56   just how much the incomparable has in [TS]

01:19:00   common with Eggman stance and Spangler [TS]

01:19:03   something your theories are the worst [TS]

01:19:05   kind of popular tripe [TS]

01:19:07   yes your methods are sloppy yes and your [TS]

01:19:09   conclusions are highly questionable [TS]

01:19:10   indeed which one of us is which so [TS]

01:19:15   that's a good question it's already can [TS]

01:19:19   be Winston because this this this [TS]

01:19:22   podcast definitely not worth 11-5 year [TS]

01:19:24   uh-huh that's right ok well I i'm going [TS]

01:19:52   we've uh huh [TS]

01:19:54   we should split up and do more damage [TS]

01:19:55   that way but it and and so in order to [TS]

01:19:59   do that we will close this edition of [TS]

01:20:02   the incomparable it's been nice [TS]

01:20:03   reminiscing about Ghostbusters it was [TS]

01:20:05   nice to watch it again and and pay [TS]

01:20:06   attention and and take some notes about [TS]

01:20:22   it's not gory or anything it's not [TS]

01:20:24   really scary but it's it's fun and [TS]

01:21:47   hat there i did I this is and just you [TS]

01:21:49   know I roll with the punches so we can [TS]

01:21:51   count and for movie references [TS]

01:21:53   even if they're from movies he's rarely [TS]

01:21:55   seen this is true i've only seen real [TS]

01:21:58   genius i wanted one time yeah we'll talk [TS]

01:22:01   about some movies of the late nineties [TS]

01:22:14   you didn't appreciate them [TS]

01:22:16   I really didn't and all i remember is [TS]

01:22:18   having a terrible haircut and being [TS]

01:22:19   married me to wear terrible close to [TS]

01:22:21   remember you're married in the end it [TS]

01:22:22   it's our business I would find you know [TS]

01:22:25   what fine forced I was married in the [TS]

01:22:28   eighties it was it was it was really [TS]

01:22:30   times the legal so it was an old later I [TS]

01:22:33   didn't want to talk about it but now [TS]

01:22:35   it's out there now my secret is I'm [TS]

01:22:37   coming clean maybe travel back in time [TS]
