The Incomparable

47: Death Star University

sorry this is like twice as the [TS]

incomparable podcast number 47 july 2011 [TS]

we're back on the incomparable and yes [TS]

this is the second part of our epic [TS]

two-part discussion of Star Wars i will [TS]

continue to be joined by John siracusa [TS]

dan moore and Scott healthy and [TS]

recognized and let's pick up the [TS]

discussion so the millennium fawlcon [TS]

comes out of hyperspace and finds the [TS]

ruins of Alderaan also can i just say [TS]

how awesome it is when the million [TS]

fucking jump to Lightspeed that is the [TS]

moment you know of any moment in the [TS]

movie the one that might grab me was [TS]

like holy crap i wish i lived in this [TS]

universe the jump to light speed and [TS]

it's such a simple effect but so [TS]

affecting all the stars turning into [TS]

lines it looks so often but it's still [TS]

  think it looks awesome [TS]

it still does look awesome you know what [TS]

makes it look awesome the twist at the [TS]

end and that doesn't go watch back it to [TS]

see that the magician's trick the slight [TS]

  twist [TS]

that's what does it oh you mean when [TS]

they get from the perspective outside [TS]

when you seal it with a twist oh yeah [TS]

star your lawyers and they do a little [TS]

twist without the Swiss no good if you [TS]

ever played star raiders on the atari [TS]

8-bit you got to do it yourself at the [TS]

exact same effect slightly isolated you [TS]

need the sound and everything you need [TS]

and that the interior which looks so [TS]

real and the fact that you can do stars [TS]

and have them look real business [TS]

pinpoints of light that's just like the [TS]

perfect union of like what was possible [TS]

and what what's the coolest thing you [TS]

could do that would look a hundred [TS]

percent real and it was that affect [TS]

anyone you know I'm in my thirties now [TS]

and I still want i still want to jump to [TS]

Lightspeed that's all I'm saying [TS]

who wouldn't we all want you to jump to [TS]

Lightspeed but don't don't live on [TS]

  Alderaan [TS]

I you know I hear that incidentally [TS]

though the real estate prices create [TS]

yeah you know you know what's good about [TS]

this movie that they would [TS]

there's nothing they would have done [TS]

they made Star Wars now they would have [TS]

guaranteed they would have had some [TS]

stupid scene showing people on Alderaan [TS]

like with their families and their dogs [TS]

and like their grandmothers an apple pie [TS]

like guaranteed they would do that is [TS]

like how can you feel any compassion for [TS]

these people let's have let's have a dub [TS]

montage not using weapons grandmother's [TS]

eating apple pie that would be it [TS]

yes holding American flags kissing [TS]

babies with puppies in their hands cut [TS]

to Princess Leia's grandmother adoptive [TS]

  grandmother eat [TS]

by a cop is about to retire the next day [TS]

she looks up and I planet was [TS]

uninhabited like maybe we shouldn't feel [TS]

so bad maybe they were lying about it [TS]

  being Alderaan [TS]

I just saying that you know they didn't [TS]

they had enough faith in the audience to [TS]

realize that when they blow up the whole [TS]

planet will feel bad for the people we [TS]

don't need to see the people's home [TS]

lives to like feel bad whereas nowadays [TS]

in any disaster movie so they're going [TS]

to blow up like you know it's like [TS]

independence there one of those types of [TS]

movies they're gonna blow up Japan they [TS]

got to show us the Japanese family like [TS]

cowering and feel like we understand [TS]

there are people there don't wait let's [TS]

not use your parents example [TS]

yes soon and respecting like they always [TS]

show you know the foreign cities and [TS]

they can't just drives me nuts yeah I [TS]

think you're absolutely right they would [TS]

  show a dog minimalism adopt-a-family a [TS]

dog and a grandmother and behold Iranian [TS]

dog that's the universal sign for doom [TS]

that you made herself from scratch [TS]

first he did it and we have any would-be [TS]

product placement it would be like [TS]

  pillsbury pie crust [TS]

oh wow well actually so you talk about [TS]

that but that's one of the that's a [TS]

strange segue but one of the things [TS]

about having this be set in a galaxy far [TS]

far away that it's an interesting choice [TS]

that you know and i think they have to [TS]

put that up front what they're really [TS]

saying there is this is not a story [TS]

  about our future [TS]

this is more mythical than that as a [TS]

result though you know we're not [TS]

anywhere where there's earth stuff which [TS]

means that you can't cut any corners at [TS]

  all [TS]

by having some product or something [TS]

that's recognizable from Earth at all [TS]

because you're not anywhere in our [TS]

future or anything which is a challenge [TS]

well not intentionally anyway they did [TS]

the opposite of product placement they [TS]

they imported stuff from the star wars [TS]

universe to our world our world to blow [TS]

well you just blew my mind the first [TS]

product placement and we pay them money [TS]

so although apparently they do have [TS]

functions in this universe as XKCD [TS]

pointed sure what the hell is an [TS]

aluminum falcon and see the great robot [TS]

  chicken line [TS]

we may blew up the Death stop [TS]

o.o is a what the hell is an aluminum [TS]

falcon look at you I'm just dealing with [TS]

a lot of crap right now it Death Star [TS]

blown up by a bunch of teenagers you [TS]

know I didn't mean to snap [TS]

oh the Emperor is not pleased [TS]

alright where are we dr. B movie tractor [TS]

been no meme that's no moon [TS]

so so great scene they come out of [TS]

hyperspace and Ben obi-wan says that's [TS]

no moon and and how solo expressing [TS]

skepticism again because that's what he [TS]

does and then there's that moral reasons [TS]

I think the old man is from its let's [TS]

get out of here and it's too late [TS]

Oh stuck in a tractor beam look at [TS]

meeting for next small moon think i can [TS]

get it before yes there is almost in [TS]

  range [TS]

  that's no moon [TS]

it's a space station too big the space [TS]

  station [TS]

very bad feeling a part on the ship [TS]

  around [TS]

I think you're right reverse joy lock in [TS]

  the auxiliary power [TS]

why are we still going towards fun [TS]

trying to harness and there's gotta be [TS]

something you can do there's nothing I [TS]

can do about him full power and Chester [TS]

  going to be related [TS]

complan but the alternatives to fighting [TS]

wonder where they got the idea for a [TS]

tractor beam maybe you star trek oh this [TS]

first movie has a lot of has a lot of [TS]

Technology you never see again that [TS]

you've got that circle-shaped blaster [TS]

that its layout on attending singer [TS]

that's just because you never see that [TS]

again right you got the tractor beams [TS]

not really about your games in the [TS]

opening scene when they walk onto the [TS]

ambassadorship yeah but they don't say [TS]

you know I and I they don't have a [TS]

visual effect the tractor beam anyway [TS]

but it seems like there's a lot of [TS]

things in this movie they decided were [TS]

not at an important part of the star [TS]

wars universe and we just wouldn't be [TS]

seeing too much of again lightsaber is [TS]

much more of those you know circle shape [TS]

sunbeams not so much the Empire gave up [TS]

on studying people you kill everybody [TS]

another thing I love about that robot [TS]

chicken noticed is that the guy says [TS]

said set the set the blast study and [TS]

play immediately like kills high like [TS]

she doesn't care she's not being taken [TS]

alive she's gonna kill all you for [TS]

  stupids bad shot stormtroopers [TS]

  stormtroopers a only Imperial [TS]

Stormtroopers or so percent against you [TS]

know the bar and that's that's the the [TS]

ultimate question right the fight [TS]

between the stormtroopers and the red [TS]

shirts from Star Trek the rest he's got [TS]

a guy in the river troopers gotta shoot [TS]

some you know that they will kill [TS]

themselves will be just a match to us [TS]

our cable off a cliff here the red [TS]

shirts with die of starvation and start [TS]

to really sure that you just each other [TS]

that's exactly what would happen [TS]

sergeant so so when you talk again when [TS]

you talk about loving the Millennium [TS]

Falcon one of the things that i love [TS]

about the Millennium Falcon is that it [TS]

is the smuggling ship and so the when [TS]

they get my cowboy the tractor beam [TS]

they're gonna be brought in what's going [TS]

to happen now how are they gonna get out [TS]

of this one the answer is that they they [TS]

basically close themselves up in little [TS]

hidden compartments in the Millennium [TS]

Falcon what else can it do that doesn't [TS]

make any sense because in the beginning [TS]

they scan the escape pods like oh [TS]

they're no life-forms there and then [TS]

later they scan and they're like oh look [TS]

their droids look what get your scanner [TS]

technology together shielded it's it's [TS]

totally shield because it's a smuggler [TS]

ship it's brilliant they've got a fake [TS]

image of I don't know if something can [TS]

  droid machinery [TS]

whenever something goes wrong and I'm [TS]

just glad that those deck plates for [TS]

things which are not probably intended [TS]

to smuggle people have releases on the [TS]

inside like like the trunk of your car [TS]

and air holes in their holes they all [TS]

held their breath only like three of [TS]

them need to breathe but that moment [TS]

always get cracks me up that like a the [TS]

kind of classic movie vibe or so they [TS]

have this game go in and then they bring [TS]

the camera and you're like hey where are [TS]

they right and they do the musical sting [TS]

just a little crack on the floor comes [TS]

up it's the so corny but like somehow [TS]

you just buy it at this type of movie [TS]

your cat's a you guys down there [TS]

give us a hand yeah the storm the storm [TS]

troopers are really not very competent [TS]

wherever they are the worst lackeys ever [TS]

i really enjoy in this movie that you [TS]

get the little bits like I love the [TS]

scene later where been deactivated [TS]

attacked me the two guys it just like [TS]

  talking [TS]

look at you see those new 238 yeah [TS]

they're pretty cool like yeah that's the [TS]

you know thing that the other things [TS]

  that were ruined [TS]

you know what they should do is find one [TS]

really good soldier and then clone him [TS]

about you know what shut up now they [TS]

will never wonder who those [TS]

stormtroopers are we will never know we [TS]

will never find know that they just [TS]

walked by and they go hey did you see [TS]

Vader he got he floated a cup of coffee [TS]

/ friend history it's kind of like Apple [TS]

employees talking about Steve Jobs [TS]

behind his back as the vibe you do not [TS]

want to be in a turbolift with there's a [TS]

divide third theater where do you which [TS]

level of the Death Star you recuperate [TS]

what do you what exactly do you do there [TS]

and overthinking at combat a whole one [TS]

on what do the stormtroopers really [TS]

think of Darth Vader it basically mining [TS]

this territory of like today like him to [TS]

make fun of him behind his back at the [TS]

  afraid of him [TS]

  you know I don't way what's the what's [TS]

the deal there also they have the black [TS]

storm troopers who are the pilots of the [TS]

TIE fighter right so they're going to [TS]

uniform is not a race that you don't [TS]

like steel Jimmy Walker was gonna play [TS]

that nobody got like it's like Darth [TS]

Vader's a cousin or something [TS]

it's just a suit dude well you're not [TS]

going to get anywhere the same color [TS]

  seat [TS]

the flight suits are black because it's [TS]

camouflage in space it's also very spot [TS]

is right and God you know how much it [TS]

pains me to say that at and it is very [TS]

slimming because those guys are actually [TS]

could drop a few pounds to fit into the [TS]

  TIE fighter [TS]

well i have an explanation for those [TS]

students for Jason if you really wanted [TS]

the reason why they have the big full [TS]

face mask you know like Darth Vader is [TS]

because the inside of the TIE fighters [TS]

don't have life support because they're [TS]

built as cheaply as they possibly can be [TS]

so there's no air in there and they're [TS]

not pressurized so they need to be [TS]

essentially wearing a spacesuit inside [TS]

the fire they also have no ratio pink [TS]

  and black is slimming [TS]

so why not exactly so that's the actual [TS]

official Star Wars universe explanation [TS]

the Empire loves its fashion also also [TS]

  it looks cool [TS]

it does look cool so they the the [TS]

stormtroopers are incompetent and they [TS]

break into the death star and then goes [TS]

off to turn off the tractor beam and and [TS]

I think you'll find this pretty us time [TS]

  for fisticuffs [TS]

it's never taken a space movie people [TS]

going to punching each other yeah [TS]

there'll be some fisticuffs sure and [TS]

some blasters and and what and maybe my [TS]

what I think it's the funniest scene in [TS]

the movie which is a han Solo trying to [TS]

explain to the guy on the other end of [TS]

the radio what's going on w hen should I [TS]

  everything's under control [TS]

situation normal what happened I like [TS]

  weapons malfunction but everything's [TS]

perfectly all right now we're fine we're [TS]

  all fine here now [TS]

thank you are you having a water- [TS]

negative we have a reactor leak here now [TS]

units lockdown largely very dangerous [TS]

man what your operating number [TS]

conversation anyway that is that is one [TS]

of the one of the brief moments that [TS]

reminds you that occasionally George [TS]

Lucas could write a funny bit of [TS]

dialogue I'm I always assume that our [TS]

support and provide anything is fine [TS]

kiss me and tell me how are you was [TS]

added by him because it's not always all [TS]

  right with that [TS]

yeah just like the I know in a later [TS]

  movie [TS]

yeah I don't know yeah it seems like it [TS]

seems like it's applet so garbage trash [TS]

  collector another memorable memorable [TS]

set-piece and something that I also took [TS]

away one with the two sons as a kid was [TS]

the air down the garbage and there's a [TS]

monster in the garbage with a you know [TS]

  and I there's that I mean this there's a [TS]

couple of lines in that scene 2 i really [TS]

enjoy the understand why there's a [TS]

monster in the trash compactor [TS]

I never did it's like rats you can't get [TS]

rid of him but it's a trash compactor [TS]

life finds away we learn anything from [TS]

jurassic park like i loved what i love [TS]

that i know guys they're everywhere [TS]

he's not gonna have a very long life [TS]

style lifespan and it will come from how [TS]

often do they use the trash compactors [TS]

apparently not long enough he started [TS]

very small someone flushed them down the [TS]

toilet like a pet alligator and then [TS]

grows to a huge size and I like the fact [TS]

that this garbage on the Death Star the [TS]

vault the same thing with the University [TS]

of course there would be garbage on the [TS]

desktop / they do with it was compacted [TS]

you know it as opposed to just being [TS]

like everything is magic and it's the [TS]

future and we don't have bathrooms are [TS]

garbage or anything like that [TS]

  although started stories apparently [TS]

shoot him in space before they jump into [TS]

  hyperspace [TS]

once they turn on stanford a trash [TS]

compactor the monster knows that it's [TS]

gonna get squished and it leaves and [TS]

co-star else you say somewhere else [TS]

that's what saves Luke I think is that I [TS]

thought were saved and then they realize [TS]

they're going to be squished to death i [TS]

do love that exchange though where he's [TS]

got that the technical wrapped around [TS]

  his neck [TS]

we're aware that that is a really funny [TS]

segment all around because another great [TS]

bit is that when they radio Threepio [TS]

yeah he your dog and he saves them and [TS]

he thinks that their shouts of [TS]

excitement or they're horrible horrible [TS]

death scripts because my metal body i [TS]

was fast for three via always feeling [TS]

the comments to it and and they do that [TS]

they did they do a lot of stuff and like [TS]

when your kid maybe you wouldn't get [TS]

that part but also at that part they [TS]

have the you know are two can't talk [TS]

right you going here the reactions to [TS]

them so the reaction of this point c-3po [TS]

says i don't care what you know I don't [TS]

care what the computer is telling you to [TS]

shut down the guard you know they're [TS]

basically relaying a piece of [TS]

information about the the you know [TS]

  hyperdrive has been deactivated [TS]

right right we're tracking has been [TS]

played honestly say whatever i did but [TS]

that's the regular text with the next [TS]

movie mi the hyperdrive generator i [TS]

think i do the same thing for the video [TS]

whenever listen stars you need to know [TS]

that while you know he has it he's [TS]

  inappropriate he has information [TS]

inappropriate times but he keeps cursing [TS]

and the only one who could understand [TS]

them because counsel telling him to be [TS]

quiet so what-what also while we're on [TS]

the death star any any other topics that [TS]

people want to bring up we got we gonna [TS]

there's nobody see Ben Kenobi sneaking [TS]

around has start he's everywhere [TS]

he's usually the force he's using the [TS]

  clouding their mind [TS]

hey he's city the sneaky guy he's [TS]

wearing old man slippers you can hear ya [TS]

well further proof of the stormtroopers [TS]

in competences wen han solo around the [TS]

corner and they're like 5000 [TS]

stormtroopers all trying to shoot him [TS]

there another 5,000 check this out in in [TS]

subversion over there are five that got [TS]

apparently saw even so a couple of storm [TS]

yeah there's i basically they hit a dead [TS]

end and they turn around because they [TS]

think they're being chased and it turns [TS]

out it was only one guy chase but he was [TS]

  always great [TS]

yeah I think that's a great scene i just [TS]

went back and looked you're right i was [TS]

misremembering the city central computer [TS]

thing from Empire I'm ashamed I'm little [TS]

  disappointed you job [TS]

Wow well I don't have as much as this is [TS]

actually this movie is burned into my [TS]

brain that other one even more so [TS]

so it's hard it does tend to take over [TS]

alright so so darth vader and obi-wan [TS]

Kenobi have a have a climactic kinda [TS]

boring sort they have something sword [TS]

battle you do kind of wish they'd spend [TS]

a little more time on the classical [TS]

classical fencing backstage kind of what [TS]

I would call it tepid lightsaber batting [TS]

when they bat against each other i think [TS]

there's anyone i see the obi-wan Kenobi [TS]

shuffle in there is little scene is [TS]

listening to every other little striking [TS]

  out yet [TS]

it's hilarious yo Kenobi shuffle dance [TS]

move that all the kids were doing and in [TS]

the end he just sees Luke and says [TS]

alright and then holds up his lightsaber [TS]

and this is turn but he does that was [TS]

like that's why Alec Guinness smile [TS]

that's a more of a million bucks right [TS]

there when he does that little smile [TS]

we did a when I was a when I think camp [TS]

as you okay we filmed I took like a [TS]

video production class and we filmed [TS]

like a parody of star wars and the only [TS]

joking that i really enjoyed what you [TS]

want to video camp now i just add a camp [TS]

that had a video class anyways much [TS]

  better [TS]

the only part of that they only part of [TS]

that parody that still makes me laugh a [TS]

bit is that we had the scene where you [TS]

know he gets you know that they're [TS]

fighting and then he lets himself get [TS]

cut down and we cut to a shot of just [TS]

like robot the floor and then like out [TS]

of frame this janitors broom comes and [TS]

  sweeps it up off-screen I i think it's [TS]

interesting that they are there's the [TS]

the shot of Vader stepping on it like [TS]

  what we're doing [TS]

where to go I couldn't have killed him [TS]

at badly and stepping on the row matter [TS]

and wondering where where he went well [TS]

shouldn't he know what happened to him [TS]

yes but it's funny that it that he you [TS]

know again strange things with darth [TS]

vader and said something about becoming [TS]

  more [TS]

yeah what he's saying but he's saying [TS]

when he steps on is like this can't be [TS]

  good [TS]

it's not there it's not there but i need [TS]

some coffee so you want the robe fit me [TS]

because I think what he's saying is true [TS]

free lightsaber also like that he gets [TS]

shot like they shoot the door and it [TS]

closes in front of them and it's like [TS]

dude he's got the force like you [TS]

couldn't stop the door from closing [TS]

he was tired from his yet from a [TS]

strenuous battle yet this particular [TS]

scene has some of the worst lightsabre [TS]

effects to the other ones were in sort [TS]

of dark rooms and they have better [TS]

lighting but they were still going with [TS]

practical effects with the head-spinning [TS]

sticks with reflective beads on them and [TS]

sometimes in this thing you can see a [TS]

spending stick with reflective BTW when [TS]

they pointed down to the the tip is [TS]

  towards the camera [TS]

yes like a very thin little yeah yeah [TS]

it's endearing in some ways but like [TS]

it's clear that green they had a limited [TS]

budget can only spend so much i think [TS]

they spent very wisely on you know space [TS]

models flying through space over a blue [TS]

screen and you know stuff like and [TS]

assets and the fact that lightsabers are [TS]

not all that like people think Star Wars [TS]

lightsaber but if you watch Star Wars [TS]

the original Star Wars is so little [TS]

lightsaber and they are so not the most [TS]

exciting thing this movie in fact I [TS]

would say it going back to the scene [TS]

with a with Luke in the nobody wants a [TS]

little hot there on on tattooing that [TS]

the second they turn that thing on [TS]

that's all they need to do for this [TS]

movie turn that sucker on show kids with [TS]

a lightsaber is their jaws dropped open [TS]

and then that would sustain them for the [TS]

rest of the movie and the fact that they [TS]

were shown again briefly as you know I [TS]

had a flashlight with a colored tube [TS]

yeah also I mean that because that [TS]

effect was was just unbelievably good [TS]

compared to every other space type of [TS]

effect on the whole idea of you know a [TS]

laser sword type that's all they need to [TS]

turn that sucker on wave it around every [TS]

kid one of those in two seconds and they [TS]

didn't need to have you didn't need Luke [TS]

wielding it for the complex Lucas Lucas [TS]

flying a spaceship for the climax [TS]

obi-wan and drop the various little [TS]

battle not that important i think that [TS]

was you know that was all you needed in [TS]

this movie that sound would it would [TS]

have been handy if he'd been carrying [TS]

that lightsaber all around the desktop [TS]

  with him [TS]

well yeah he didn't know how to use it [TS]

he would it's like that thing went [TS]

around the internet the other day of [TS]

like about what you would do if you had [TS]

your own lightsaber as a pie chart and [TS]

it's like using the final you're only [TS]

  one person tonight [TS]

  ninety-nine percent immediate accidental [TS]

  amputation [TS]

so moving forward again to let see they [TS]

escaped and there's a there's that they [TS]

jump into little cannons and do in some [TS]

  ways it's a shot-for-shot reenactment of [TS]

a world war two movie [TS]

yeah unnecessary but Lucas loves the [TS]

  world war two stuff [TS]

well that's great stuff I i love the [TS]

answer between the two guys that you [TS]

know you get seem like you know a little [TS]

bit Millennium Falcon you know [TS]

come on baby hold come on baby hold [TS]

together plus they had to try and stop [TS]

them and they had to shoot him I mean [TS]

they let him go but they had to make it [TS]

the escape seem believable there needs [TS]

to be much so that shows layer being [TS]

cynical that's one of my favorite at [TS]

addition to her character is that after [TS]

this big battle where the two men are [TS]

like yeah we did it she goes for it let [TS]

us go which is football cynical and [TS]

deflates the two male heroes with her [TS]

not a bad bit of rescuing huh you know [TS]

sometimes I amaze even myself [TS]

that doesn't sound too hard they let us [TS]

  go [TS]

the only explanation for the ease of our [TS]

escape easy you call that easy [TS]

they're tracking us not this sister [TS]

although she gets into that her [TS]

character is really developed in that's [TS]

one of my favorite scenes the entire [TS]

movie 44 lay out what she's just taught [TS]

there walking down the hallway after [TS]

pulling her out and and and they're [TS]

trying to talk and it's basically [TS]

establishing a relationship going on [TS]

later she's testy and there you know [TS]

spar with each other at this [TS]

I don't know who you are where you came [TS]

  from [TS]

now on you do is lie to you k look your [TS]

worshipfulness let's get one thing [TS]

  straight [TS]

I take orders from just one person me so [TS]

  one day still alive [TS]

somebody get this big walking carpet out [TS]

  of my way [TS]

no reward is worth this that is great [TS]

interplay and I think that's that [TS]

dialogue you know clearly Carrie Fisher [TS]

and Harrison Ford had had really good [TS]

chemistry i think the most part that was [TS]

that was like a Sorkin scene because [TS]

they're walking and talking and it's [TS]

just sparkling you know like the lines [TS]

as written or not great but the [TS]

performances Aaron circuit star wars and [TS]

that was that was that seriously they're [TS]

walking down the hallway and they're [TS]

doing the little snappy with the [TS]

dialogue and the writing is not that the [TS]

lines are not that great with the [TS]

  delivery sells it [TS]

this is the part of the movie where [TS]

there's a very strange shift and you you [TS]

end up on like the the moon and there's [TS]

  like a there's like a briefing don't [TS]

like they're like it and would get our [TS]

university basically i always think of [TS]

it as rebel you because they've got that [TS]

exterior shot of that huge building that [TS]

looks kinda like maybe it's on a college [TS]

campus you know you think about the [TS]

scene and how like it's out there this [TS]

university and they're talking about [TS]

stuff but if you look at some of the [TS]

things that they built this humongous [TS]

set with life-size x-wing and why wings [TS]

in it just for this like establishing [TS]

shot showing here is the rebel fleet [TS]

impressive now it's very they're [TS]

scrapping it ya know I the time sequence [TS]

here always confused me too because [TS]

they're being tracked by the Empire [TS]

presumably the death star takes a little [TS]

time to move its kind of big [TS]

that's true wait for it I don't know how [TS]

it travels between solar systems but [TS]

takes an hour to get in range of the [TS]

  planet [TS]

well you can't get it can jump in the [TS]

tender but remotely and then it has to [TS]

kind of navigate they used older you [TS]

know speed up jumping to the you can't [TS]

exit hyperspace near gravity well Greg [TS]

is right of course that starts large [TS]

enough to have its own gravity well that [TS]

they have to stop they get the Death [TS]

Star gas station they come back with the [TS]

plans and there and there immediately [TS]

analyzed in the one flaw is found even [TS]

though the Empire should have known then [TS]

that there was a flaw shoddy [TS]

  construction government the lowest [TS]

bidder built the best are [TS]

scalpel it would have been really sad to [TS]

say but along the way down that trench [TS]

shot at it and it turned out that they [TS]

  fixed it [TS]

yeah they patched it may be that star [TS]

1.1 yeah combination shot this port just [TS]

seems to be concreted over i got that [TS]

bit ya know I am I missing something [TS]

here great star wars fan rationalize [TS]

that seems to be one of those strange [TS]

points in the movie where explainers not [TS]

rationalize errs the broader point is [TS]

valid is that when you build something [TS]

really large you're not thinking of [TS]

threats from small things and mostly [TS]

this is a bad strategy because of you if [TS]

you only have a small fleet it's like [TS]

we're going to pick them off it's the [TS]

idea of the Nets attacking the giant [TS]

where if you can you can do attack it in [TS]

a way where its defenses were not set up [TS]

for that type of attack so that's the [TS]

only chance you have because you have a [TS]

small fleet so that that type of [TS]

scenario it is kind of plausible the [TS]

exact way it's done with the tunnel that [TS]

leads directly to the heart the [TS]

vulnerable heart of the thing well you [TS]

know that's poetic license but well yeah [TS]

they made I mean they tried to make it [TS]

like it's it's there's this tiny little [TS]

flaw right like it's this tiny little [TS]

flaw we need to get there and you need [TS]

to be a super good shot they establish [TS]

upfront it's not like you can just you [TS]

know it's not easy to hit the many [TS]

people make attempts at that you know [TS]

you have to be amazingly skilled you [TS]

might have to use the Force you know [TS]

that's not there is a on the upside [TS]

there's a trench that leads right to [TS]

  that sucker [TS]

well this trenches all over the thing [TS]

but that's a good design but and Luke we [TS]

know you've never flown an x-wing before [TS]

and because we're rebels we probably [TS]

don't have that many x-wings use the [TS]

moment whoppers st16 back home did you [TS]

see 16 was in the battle but his dad was [TS]

a really good pilot to their kind of [TS]

short on pilots were the t16 controls [TS]

similar to the x-wing control [TS]

technically yes both are made by income [TS]

it's just like driving a car man is like [TS]

a steering wheel and three pedals you [TS]

know or to peddle techniques and [TS]

technically they are made by the same [TS]

manufacturer of just saying that's right [TS]

artoo is flying up it really is our take [TS]

except he gets shot in the head doesn't [TS]

  eat and yeah [TS]

alright is amazingly resilient though [TS]

lots of redundancy in the arterial [TS]

  minutes [TS]

I don't understand why the death star [TS]

you know it's kind of basic military [TS]

tactics are you have a giant target and [TS]

then you have it's full of little tiny [TS]

planes that will go out in patrol and [TS]

then when they see the 30 played the 30 [TS]

starship coming they will attack them [TS]

with their tie fighters they have [TS]

  million thousands of them [TS]

it's like it's like an aircraft carrier [TS]

because they come into low for the laser [TS]

cannon turbolaser cabinets doesn't make [TS]

any sense it doesn't the case was just [TS]

like the cantina was set up for [TS]

merchandising the trenching was set up [TS]

  for video games [TS]

yeah I don't think they have that in [TS]

  mind thanks something's happened [TS]

I can't listen to that music that the [TS]

music in that scene and actually the [TS]

music and the scene in the Millennium [TS]

Falcon weather in the gun turrets too [TS]

because I've heard those bits in various [TS]

video games so much that it makes me [TS]

sweaty when I hear it like a bit between [TS]

x-wing and I target am a very tense [TS]

oh well i just lost I lost levels in [TS]

like x-wing TIE fighter so many times [TS]

that they play that same music over and [TS]

over and over again David segue between [TS]

different sections yeah uh-huh well I [TS]

say that that one effect that we think [TS]

of it I don't remember not having seen [TS]

this movie but i do remember the the [TS]

biggest emotional moment for me was when [TS]

they swoop that camera into that trench [TS]

because previously this all like [TS]

spaceship movies had looked fake or [TS]

whatever and have been slow speed even [TS]

today when i watch it [TS]

even today when I see that camera move [TS]

it is still like more exciting than [TS]

ninety percent of the CD stuff that I [TS]

say you've just taken that camera [TS]

swooping into that trench they use that [TS]

they reuse that that's used twice [TS]

mmm yeah i was with many people go into [TS]

the trench but i like it because it [TS]

looks so real you know it was expensive [TS]

film sure yeah and the thing is that [TS]

it's the biggest cheat because if you [TS]

want something to look real you know do [TS]

it at night or in space and it do it you [TS]

know like monochrome with harsh lighting [TS]

like you don't have to look like a [TS]

forest it's not it's not an alien [TS]

creature it's the easiest thing you [TS]

could possibly do but it looks so dead [TS]

real and right-wing with into my job [TS]

because it's also it's POV right again [TS]

like your yeah it's we have a background [TS]

so you get the impression of speed plus [TS]

they're shooting at you with JT anybody [TS]

  else [TS]

excellent it was it even to this day I [TS]

say that that is like so fast and so [TS]

dramatic and it feels like you know that [TS]

you are there and that's exciting and [TS]

interesting much more so than they would [TS]

like the third person shots nowadays [TS]

where you pulled back and you see like [TS]

the amazing jet fighter crashing into [TS]

the buildings that you see it from a [TS]

distance here you're you're in it you [TS]

  know what I mean [TS]

good job yeah and I like in general i [TS]

like the fact that the the trench run [TS]

seen there there is a lot of jeopardy [TS]

and we we do see we're right in the [TS]

cockpit with some of these guys just as [TS]

they get blown up but generally they're [TS]

not afraid to kill people and kids [TS]

moving everyone doesn't come out of it [TS]

like everyone's fine all my friends are [TS]

saved out a pretty much kill everybody [TS]

looks like that almost everybody died [TS]

including Porkins porking Lucas is never [TS]

good at naming people but i feel that [TS]

one is particularly cruel troll [TS]

well that was his nickname they were [TS]

they were a bunch of mean bastards in [TS]

the x-wing canada lol they have you have [TS]

you have all the you have all the [TS]

vestiges of the cutscenes in the [TS]

relationship between Luke and Biggs yeah [TS]

dammit pigs were ru or poo yeah we [TS]

talked to do and then they cut they [TS]

actually cut at some point too i think [TS]

something that's like a little bit like [TS]

there's abrupt end to one of those shots [TS]

where that sounds like he's about to [TS]

talk about something like pigs my best [TS]

friend where are you know and they [TS]

necessarily top but I thought home was [TS]

  your best friend [TS]

yeah you guys just met you guys should [TS]

be like bffs also the the pilot the TIE [TS]

fighter pilot who bangs into Vader [TS]

because he's so concerned the truth is a [TS]

true hero of the movie i was going to [TS]

get to that point there's a good article [TS]

on from last year saying [TS]

that the true hero of Star Wars and hope [TS]

it does not have a Kiki TIE fighter [TS]

pilot and it's not on sold this house [TS]

all comes in and he's got a clear shot [TS]

they don't know is there does he shoot [TS]

Darth Vader no he doesn't he could've [TS]

picked any one of those typewriters [TS]

should he shoots the guy next to Darth [TS]

  Vader who explodes [TS]

then what happens then does issue Darth [TS]

Vader know he does nothing else he talks [TS]

over the intercom nothing going on then [TS]

  what happens [TS]

the guy next to Darth Vader flips out [TS]

crashing into darth vader and eyes and [TS]

causing I just getting off that guy is [TS]

  so fired [TS]

honda low on funny though possibly the [TS]

worst choice ever in like I'm going to [TS]

come save you I'm coming out [TS]

don't be haha that was all that was all [TS]

what he had planned he saw this chain [TS]

reaction like four steps in advance if I [TS]

got you shoot that guy over there is [TS]

gonna be a lot easier to hit it if Hans [TS]

doing what you suggest there's no [TS]

  sequels [TS]

yeah we can't kill that's that's what [TS]

that was totally on his mind getting [TS]

your adventures that a shot at Vader and [TS]

missed and just wing them an invader [TS]

would have flipped out and his little [TS]

tumbling thing the other two guys could [TS]

have bugged out of here because I mean [TS]

he's flying and shooting at the same [TS]

time he might just you know people get [TS]

off wanting my to his head [TS]

anyway i'm playing with a little apple [TS]

to Joystiq basically and as the story of [TS]

this story points out the the TIE [TS]

fighter who flips out has enough time to [TS]

say over the intercom lookout as he's [TS]

stumbling towards may not know he was [TS]

totally unperturbed no one shot him [TS]

didn't graduate anything he just looked [TS]

out at lookout I'm coming with you [TS]

there's no reason to live he's like my [TS]

wingman Bob just got blown up [TS]

yeah buddy just yeah just got you should [TS]

have swerve towards the wall not towards [TS]

vader i love Bader's grunt of surprise [TS]

to and the other hooks winblows water [TS]

hot i will say that that is one of my [TS]

the the end sort of climax there's my [TS]

favorite teams and i still get [TS]

goosebumps at that Han Solo's you know [TS]

yeah he comes out of the Sun that's [TS]

another lesson of the scene where it's [TS]

so easy to do you just do a spotlight [TS]

for the Sun that the ship the ship model [TS]

sort of stops the sunbeams a little bit [TS]

yeah her face it is so easy to do with [TS]

personal checks and they that they knew [TS]

  what would work [TS]

you know sometimes I think they knew or [TS]

work and they stuck to the sweet spot [TS]

again i would say i challenge you to [TS]

take computer and make a better looking [TS]

version of that to second scene with [TS]

computer online Falcon and compassion i [TS]

will say that you know in the Death Star [TS]

battle there are clearly from my mind [TS]

you know there's a lot of rough edges [TS]

there's a lot of scenes of people going [TS]

in for attacks on the Death Star [TS]

yeah and that they didn't have the money [TS]

to do it the way they want to look at [TS]

you know terrible there are a lot of [TS]

things that look really good and I think [TS]

that's why the terrible scenes look look [TS]

sad look worse because they're put up [TS]

against a lot of things that look really [TS]

really quite impressive especially for [TS]

the time and so you know later versions [TS]

of special effects were they to exist if [TS]

someone were to redo that section of the [TS]

  movie [TS]

for example you know you could [TS]

definitely make stuff that looks cool [TS]

but you know at the same time I think it [TS]

there there's definitely a nostalgic [TS]

value an A and an appreciation value to [TS]

a lot of those scenes even out there [TS]

awesome struck by how well they cut [TS]

together the limited footage they have [TS]

because they only have so many foot [TS]

pictures of and the ships are going to [TS]

the trench and chasing them and they're [TS]

going to the trench again and they reuse [TS]

scenes but they entered the intercut [TS]

with scenes from inside the cockpit [TS]

where they move the camera as if like [TS]

  they're riding slow-moving bucking [TS]

Broncos for every x-wing fighter is [TS]

bouncing every excellent pilot is slowly [TS]

bouncing up and down so they cut to the [TS]

close-up of that cut the side view of [TS]

them going to the chance to cut to the [TS]

point of view from Vader you know that [TS]

they are hiding the fact that none of [TS]

these shots are as good as that one [TS]

camera move into the trench right but [TS]

i'm amazed at how well it holds up [TS]

without any enhancement or anything like [TS]

that where they just keep it moving fast [TS]

enough and I music and the tension of [TS]

the scene you know you're not you're not [TS]

paying attention right like you're [TS]

you're focusing on the plot and every [TS]

right you're caught up you caught up in [TS]

the moment and they you know they don't [TS]

let them linger on any one bad shot [TS]

enough to for you to get upset but you [TS]

know there are a couple there are a [TS]

couple really really bad shots where [TS]

they like the x-wing swoops in and shoot [TS]

something on the surface of the Death [TS]

Star it's like that looks that's a model [TS]

but the terrible little model City there [TS]

to the surface of decimal things were [TS]

all shot in daylight so a lot of my [TS]

meeting education and it shows but again [TS]

you know i would use that is it a [TS]

drawing attention to you know compared [TS]

to the next two movies which clearly [TS]

they're like well we learned a lot from [TS]

that things never to do again and the [TS]

next two movies look you know by the [TS]

time you hit Jedi you know the effects [TS]

are just a those effects look perfect to [TS]

  me still [TS]

yeah and and song this the kids showing [TS]

this to my children I don't I was trying [TS]

to quiz them and in and in a way they [TS]

don't know they're being asked but I [TS]

don't think they'd notice any difference [TS]

and if you're my koala lights like [TS]

  pointing down at them [TS]

what did you see well you know that they [TS]

can't distinguish like these effects are [TS]

better than those effects with this [TS]

movie looks better than that what you [TS]

know sometimes they can tell but for [TS]

Star Wars I don't think they noticed a [TS]

real big difference between you know [TS]

Star Wars and return of the jedi in [TS]

terms of the effects quality because [TS]

when you again when your kid all they [TS]

see is the emotion of that scene and [TS]

attention and they have no idea about [TS]

anything else and that's certainly how [TS]

it was for all of us [TS]

I i do remember when I was some when i [TS]

was 14 or 13 and so return of the jedi [TS]

actually noticed how much better the [TS]

effects were because there were so many [TS]

different things moving at once right [TS]

but I'm so so at the end we have the the [TS]

death star blows up spoiler horn like [TS]

you have the great sex scene of the of [TS]

the photon torpedoes going in wait what [TS]

when looking i know is this [TS]

although there is a nice detail married [TS]

you can see where the first shot missed [TS]

  ya [TS]

and then it doesn't impact on the [TS]

surface Luca takes a deep breath and [TS]

whenever its metals for everybody except [TS]

you probably like rebels who can take [TS]

time to make medals for people [TS]

what is the real without racism he was [TS]

just the copilot if you're going to give [TS]

the melt all the copilot's to then just [TS]

how many metals we have to buy now I [TS]

mean these aren't you gonna get one he [TS]

was the copilot there were three guys [TS]

you survived we give them to the main [TS]

character is how the number of chips on [TS]

  the hand [TS]

aliens don't get medals we don't serve [TS]

their kind here get everyone everyone [TS]

who survived gets a medal this isn't [TS]

like kindergarten where everybody gets a [TS]

medal of start they helped this is a [TS]

medal for that cheese from a bow and she [TS]

has you knows it she has to walk behind [TS]

like someone's wife too and they go down [TS]

the aisle he's gonna walk a step behind [TS]

i believe chewy gets a medal in the [TS]

comic also also I believe r2d2 and c3po [TS]

have had necklaces with a big medallion [TS]

of feel they are nicely polished up for [TS]

the final scene that's another thing [TS]

that struck me from from the beginning [TS]

to the end of this movie [TS]

how how good the props for the droids [TS]

look they look like shiny metal robots [TS]

and I don't like it when they don't be [TS]

able to make shiny metal anymore but [TS]

they just look more shiny in metal then [TS]

shiny metal things moves today [TS]

well it's not it's not i think the point [TS]

is they don't look shiny to me because I [TS]

think that's a problem with the cg stuff [TS]

well when they get polished at the end [TS]

but even even in the beginning when [TS]

they're all scuffed up they look like [TS]

  metal [TS]

yeah well they're scuffed up but like [TS]

they look like there's a dull sort of [TS]

matte finish to like artis dome I think [TS]

that looks it looks like metal but it [TS]

looks like you know well-worn metal Nazi [TS]

threepio's got like a dentist a dent in [TS]

his head like and he's all dusty and [TS]

  dirty [TS]

I think they make them out [TS]

plastic now maybe that's the problem [TS]

they don't want it so easy to mold [TS]

plastic that they didn't have some guy [TS]

hammer out metal you know although i [TS]

will say this time i did i don't know [TS]

why but maybe because the pacing i [TS]

laughed a kind of a previously at the [TS]

part where they they take our two out of [TS]

the x-wing afterwards and he's been shot [TS]

by darth vader and looks terrible he's [TS]

all blown up and everything and there's [TS]

that brief my second of like oh no artoo [TS]

and threepio goes on and then like like [TS]

  two seconds later [TS]

everybody's like that will be by mr. [TS]

  robot isn't there a like a like a [TS]

  hard-bitten mechanic I this that's all [TS]

right we'll get a patched-up without to [TS]

that yeah but feel like they're like all [TS]

right great glad to hear it let's go [TS]

back to celebrate party we have it back [TS]

in your mother for everybody's before [TS]

they go into by we backed him up we [TS]

totally backed him up beforehand so it [TS]

will be fine also nobody seems to care [TS]

about the the the like dozens of people [TS]

the two dozen people who died and I've [TS]

hack hero's of the rebellion [TS]

yeah they're dead metals sprite more [TS]

  medals for me [TS]

hey guys example we have extra metals [TS]

here that the copilot's could get a [TS]

except for that Wookiee room that scene [TS]

has the worst line the entire movie for [TS]

me tho you gotta do it well you let you [TS]

get all the credit and take all the [TS]

reward money they knew there was more to [TS]

you than money you see what I'm saying [TS]

here with this text that's an example of [TS]

you know Arizona's great line George you [TS]

can type the ship and you sure as hell [TS]

can't say it but doesn't works written [TS]

line not delivered well in the entire [TS]

movie it's okay i do declare [TS]

well that brings us actually John [TS]

pointing that out i want i want you all [TS]

to tell me something that you think is [TS]

bad and Star Wars tell me somethin bad [TS]

everybody who criticizes it is bad but [TS]

they will never make another movie is [TS]

good i think we covered a lot of stuff [TS]

with the bad lightsabre effects some of [TS]

the author the dialogue looping is bad [TS]

sometimes that words coming out of my [TS]

campers mouth don't match up with the [TS]

word oh yeah the screen with a guy in [TS]

Syracuse's bad the the death sentence on [TS]

five planets or whatever he it's like [TS]

almost nothing he says man [TS]

just up with ya it's like they couldn't [TS]

be bothered it ADR is a lost art or [TS]

something and enough for a dr you know [TS]

they're making all these crazy special [TS]

effects in costumes i think they don't [TS]

have time like something yeah something [TS]

had to fall by the wayside there and if [TS]

it's the loop and dialogue well nobody's [TS]

really paying attention to their mouths [TS]

you're ignoring his alien physiology he [TS]

doesn't speak out of his mouth he speaks [TS]

out of an organ lower down in his chest [TS]

it doesn't necessarily match his lips [TS]

that's racist years no metal for him [TS]

then we don't look at me I know he'd be [TS]

too on it with his chest mouth [TS]

well I think it's funny that obi-wan [TS]

Kenobi goes into hiding and he says i [TS]

will use is assumed identity of Ben [TS]

Kenobi know and we'll have a 5v what the [TS]

Kenobi's are like the smiths of the [TS]

Empire that's right yeah wizard Scott [TS]

that was just a crazy old man okay well [TS]

never finds get that line did he break [TS]

that to that line of God in the other [TS]

  direction [TS]

yeah that crazy old man is just a wizard [TS]

now I don't argue it but he's still [TS]

admitting he's a wizard either way it [TS]

doesn't make sex crazy old with his head [TS]

to marry and said very quickly so it's [TS]

cause you don't have to think about is a [TS]

wizard what I decide whether teachers [TS]

always in all caps with periods between [TS]

the letters that crazy old man is [TS]

littered all right so my next my next [TS]

round table question is I give me a [TS]

favorite line from Star Wars your [TS]

  favorite line [TS]

I gotta go with I find your lack of [TS]

faith disturbing because it is one of [TS]

the badass easiest of all badass lines [TS]

delivered so calmly while talking [TS]

someone without actually touching them [TS]

without seemingly breaking a sweat sweat [TS]

after the guys tried to chew you out you [TS]

know it's like if the ultimate meeting [TS]

scene like in your meetings at work and [TS]

some guy knowing you and maybe your boss [TS]

is getting on your case or whatever [TS]

don't you wish you could force choke [TS]

someone and calmly say I find your lack [TS]

of faith in my plan to stick to hold [TS]

their cup of starbucks cup of coffee [TS]

that I gotta go with the way go with the [TS]

line that i wrote on the back of the [TS]

exam for my Christianity class in [TS]

college which was hokey religions and [TS]

ancient weapons are no match for a good [TS]

blaster who said you found my professor [TS]

  professor didn't like that [TS]

large on actually stole my answer so I i [TS]

will agree with job plus 1 lots of words [TS]

Greg yeah there's just there's too many [TS]

but i'll go with John Wow [TS]

come on guys this is your life and your [TS]

lack of pants disturbing basically [TS]

that's like it and if i had to go for a [TS]

segment I would go for that walking down [TS]

the hallway seen so many good lines that [TS]

the Han Solo uh you know the baby ad lib [TS]

dialogue when when she gets loose [TS]

what I was gonna kill though I was like [TS]

I'm gonna go with the wilhelm scream oh [TS]

alright haha I you know everything [TS]

really that you need to know in life I [TS]

think you can learn from Star Wars for [TS]

example I think you just got a book [TS]

contract first find the controls that [TS]

extend the bridge then shoot the control [TS]

panel that advice will serve you and let [TS]

me tell you come in handy more times and [TS]

and the meta advice have a woman tell [TS]

you what to do at all times [TS]

there is a serious like workman's comp [TS]

problem on the Death Star is being out [TS]

with the classical chasms and the [TS]

bridges but yeah they're carrying this [TS]

number has no railings and all I mean I [TS]

realize show would have our feet there's [TS]

no place osha they were probably you [TS]

know over budget and they gotta build [TS]

the whole big ball when I ever met [TS]

planet killing laser but there's no [TS]

railings anywhere so you just you know [TS]

you stepped through a door that's like [TS]

whoa get to the end of the world they [TS]

lose more stormtroopers that way but you [TS]

know the Emperor had the Senate [TS]

dissolved it stands to reason he's going [TS]

to dissolve all related bureaucracies [TS]

like the space IRS star wars it's not [TS]

it's not it's not silly safety [TS]

regulations what's really easy if you [TS]

need to get rid of somebody's [TS]

incompetent you just gotta be like hey [TS]

joe is it over there and over your right [TS]

  thigh [TS]

it's just a painting on glass it's [TS]

actually two feet it seems like a very [TS]

odd safe workplace that's taking a [TS]

picture of of all the mattresses that [TS]

are under the yeah the antenna hanging [TS]

off of the bottom of Cloud City yes [TS]

yeah it it takes away some of the [TS]

mystique well you know like they have [TS]

the spaceports we're like the Millennium [TS]

Falcon parks just open to space with [TS]

magnetic shielding to keep for the [TS]

vacuum of space and killing everybody so [TS]

presumably you just walk to the edge [TS]

there and check your body through the [TS]

magnetic you know she'll be waiting [TS]

  plus there's like a 15 amp fuse that's [TS]

holding the whole thing together or [TS]

somebody plugs in their air conditioner [TS]

on the Death Star hairdryers whatsoever [TS]

we just vented a airlock to space along [TS]

had just actually what happens is [TS]

favored is brewing a new pot of coffee [TS]

  just goes off [TS]

yeah I find your lack of voltage [TS]

  disturbing against regulation that's [TS]

right this is really not up to code [TS]

dan I know you mentioned this we should [TS]

talk a little bit at least about about [TS]

John Williams score for this i have I [TS]

totally have a man-crush on John [TS]

Williams true he's awesome isn't magic [TS]

think you have still got tangles anytime [TS]

I hear the star wars-themed startup I [TS]

there's something something that has [TS]

been hardwired into my brain I have a [TS]

physiological reaction to it you should [TS]

  consult a neurologist [TS]

I see them conduct the boston pops up [TS]

with the star wars music anytime and [TS]

it's just a fantastic experience but i [TS]

mean i think this is one of the the [TS]

earlier of his really sort of bombastic [TS]

scores which I think then became sort of [TS]

a a trademark perhaps overused later on [TS]

but it's just is such a great sword and [TS]

John talked a little bit before about [TS]

filling out you know the soundscape and [TS]

if without the music this this movie [TS]

would not be the movie that it is i mean [TS]

it just it would I think it would fall [TS]

flat in a lot of places but there's [TS]

something in the complexity of it the [TS]

the interweaving all the motifs and the [TS]

different themes for the different [TS]

characters that really you know enhances [TS]

the entire experience and and dare I say [TS]

there are there are movies there are [TS]

related movies that without dialogue [TS]

could still be saved by the music [TS]

yeah like the the music in this thing is [TS]

it does acting for the [TS]

actors who either can't or won't do it [TS]

in particular seems and the one that [TS]

comes to mind the clip that i picked for [TS]

possibly bookending the show with is [TS]

that the dual sunsets in Luke has no [TS]

lines that scene in terms of facial [TS]

acting he's not asked to do too much and [TS]

in fact lead into that scene he does [TS]

this child just kick the dirt [TS]

frustration thing which doesn't look [TS]

that great but the music is the actor in [TS]

that scene like that that is like the [TS]

heart of the movie of Luke you know [TS]

wants to get off the planet [TS]

he doesn't have any lines you didn't say [TS]

anything the music does all the talking [TS]

in that scene and that's that's the one [TS]

musical cues home we not the bombastic [TS]

opening that that always gets me is that [TS]

the the binary son said you know strings [TS]

thing with the crescendo that is just [TS]

that's the best musical moment of this [TS]

  whole movie that's a group that's a [TS]

great piece I mean that's my point in [TS]

the entire series for me it just [TS]

visually with the music that's the one [TS]

that gets me so this is something [TS]

  special [TS]

  [Music] [TS]

  [Music] [TS]

and no dialogue no acting it's all the [TS]

music i actually went to tosha's station [TS]

to get power converters yeah it makes us [TS]

free makes us forget that whiny boy that [TS]

  we saw [TS]

yeah absolutely when I wouldn't listen [TS]

the score you know that last bit too i [TS]

think right at the death star you know [TS]

right when all this sort of the tension [TS]

is is all ramped up there's just a great [TS]

moment there i think in the music as [TS]

well that like I can listen to that [TS]

music and it's hard for me to listen to [TS]

music and do something else at the same [TS]

time because immediately I'm transported [TS]

to the Death Star trench and like oh my [TS]

god this is it does i got to make this [TS]

shot you know and i think it's just it [TS]

raises the tension so much it's so it's [TS]

so evocative that I think it just it [TS]

just transports me how did Lucas and get [TS]

these people and one knows bribery [TS]

  blackmail [TS]

I think you you know he has the American [TS]

  Graffiti you [TS]

Thank You American Graffiti that's the [TS]

that's his whole résumé other than his [TS]

college movies but he gets people who [TS]

are just absolutely brilliant at what [TS]

they do with he knew lots of people here [TS]

including Francis Ford Coppola and you [TS]

know hehe so he had connection American [TS]

Graffiti made a lot of money and i'm [TS]

american graffiti was a huge hit on a [TS]

lot of these people were not you know [TS]

the people there John Williams while a [TS]

great composer was not right on Williams [TS]

haven't you know to get John Williams [TS]

before he's John Williams is it is a [TS]

bigger achievement than getting him [TS]

after his John Williams yeah true i I've [TS]

been I think you know part of it is like [TS]

like like jason said United he had the [TS]

connections he was in with that [TS]

community and I think they're just you [TS]

know maybe someone it's just luck [TS]

they're like you got Mark Hamill right [TS]

but then also got everything forward so [TS]

you don't know which one is going to [TS]

turn out to be the Harrison Ford and [TS]

which one is going to be the mark hamill [TS]

although I shouldn't say bad things [TS]

about Mark Hamill because i have good [TS]

things to say about him because his [TS]

Joker in Batman the series right there [TS]

you go that I was gonna say anybody who [TS]

says Mark Hamill is not a good actor [TS]

that's just proof that you know you can [TS]

go he can still do some some he's got [TS]

some chops they just happen to be in a [TS]

different direction so the I think it's [TS]

time for us to break the glass and [TS]

discuss the fact that these movies were [TS]

then sort of jute we do her as this for [TS]

  our three [TS]

  well I'm hoping [TS]

will be the last topic of this special [TS]

  two-part uncomfortable i hope it's two [TS]

parts because i was those are great way [TS]

  to wreck on [TS]

  yes special editions [TS]

I'm just gonna throw it out there [TS]

because we pretend they don't exist but [TS]

I think we have to talk about them they [TS]

made special editions where they cleaned [TS]

up a lot of stuff so a lot of it looks [TS]

better but they also made changes and [TS]

then they did some things that don't [TS]

that are very different and don't [TS]

necessarily look better and i know there [TS]

are some strong feelings about this [TS]

well I want to give some good feelings [TS]

about the special editions this is [TS]

saying that i have good feelings with [TS]

the pickles here's my good feelings [TS]

about the special launch their accuses [TS]

bad 100 now let's this is 0 you'll feel [TS]

better after it so star wars we've all [TS]

seen it and lived in whatever and [TS]

hitting on away and we knew they were [TS]

doing these prequel things the prospect [TS]

of which was unbelievably exciting to [TS]

all of us right because we didn't know [TS]

I'm whoa whoa they did they did what [TS]

yeah so but they have these ads in the [TS]

movie theater for the special editions [TS]

and what they would show is a look at [TS]

one of the one i remember is they show a [TS]

little television screen with our or [TS]

playing on it saying this is how you [TS]

remember Star Wars people because you [TS]

probably didn't see in the theater [TS]

because you were just born around that [TS]

time and i have liked any mono audio [TS]

coming out of it and then they have a CG [TS]

x-wing come flying out of the screen [TS]

shoot a TIE fighter and fly through the [TS]

resulting explosion with all the [TS]

surround sound on and it was like that [TS]

was like you know that little thing to [TS]

show the TV screens like that's not how [TS]

I remember star wars and then exploded [TS]

into that it's like yes that's how I [TS]

remember star wars and they showed us [TS]

the CG and next the typewriters [TS]

everything and it was an exciting [TS]

feeling of like I'm going to get to see [TS]

Star Wars again in the theater [TS]

little did we know what they would do to [TS]

the movie all we knew is that you know [TS]

that explains look really good [TS]

yeah those were really effective ads but [TS]

that's an artifact of the cultural [TS]

ubiquity of Star Wars i mean i remember [TS]

star wars in the theaters that's my [TS]

memory stores not on the TV screen but I [TS]

mean there's a generation of people like [TS]

me who did wrong as the most of it will [TS]

not turn off i'm saying it was exciting [TS]

we were excited to see these special we [TS]

were excited to see if they just [TS]

re-released in theaters period we've [TS]

been great but we're excited to see this [TS]

special new edition of Star Wars and [TS]

they didn't show you all the horrible [TS]

  things that they [TS]

due to the movies individuals at that [TS]

point you thought like hey cool we see [TS]

you know it's like Star Wars but better [TS]

  right [TS]

and like so let's take let's check them [TS]

off one of the horrible things that [TS]

we're done reduces first I have says the [TS]

worst 320 shoot cars that's the worst [TS]

terrible and it's worse because so [TS]

needless to say then reconnected to [TS]

having it be sort of like get hit on [TS]

kind of twitches and and they shoot [TS]

someone that was in the original special [TS]

edition looks terrible there it's bad [TS]

technically it's bad plot-wise yeah okay [TS]

  so there's there's a doubles there's [TS]

  their little creatures underfoot [TS]

  everywhere there's little flourishes [TS]

they're just extraneous like throughout [TS]

the entire movie establishing shot of [TS]

Mos Eisley when they fly in and they [TS]

have a big dinosaur by and I guy punches [TS]

a robot out of the air and all sorts [TS]

yeah there is a shot [TS]

there's one shot that I really love from [TS]

the special edition which you know it [TS]

doesn't bother me that it's not in the [TS]

the original movie like I'm fine without [TS]

it but like as a shot i love the shot of [TS]

the phone can actually taking off from [TS]

authorized Lee there's like an overhead [TS]

shot that looks better than the original [TS]

shot yes it's just a great-looking shot [TS]

and it's kinda again i said i just love [TS]

the Millennium Falcon so much like it [TS]

just it's so cool to see it like in [TS]

  action [TS]

it's a little early 90 CGS a lot of [TS]

these things I mean it's not yeah a lot [TS]

of it looks dated now which is they [TS]

don't look as good on Mike [TS]

no they don't I didn't mind the Haunted [TS]

job scene just because it had a Harrison [TS]

Ford you know it had been shot original [TS]

  I don't think it's necessary and I think [TS]

job looks pretty bad but it was the clip [TS]

of Harrison Ford from the original [TS]

filming that we hadn't seen before but [TS]

it looks like a deleted scene you know [TS]

well it looks like something we [TS]

shouldn't be seen because this [TS]

performance is not that great and the [TS]

horrible effects and walking over and it [TS]

lately duplicated in the in the grito [TS]

seem it's like it's some the Lucan big [TS]

scene though that they didn't know [TS]

eventually found its way to youtube from [TS]

  on Tatooine [TS]

yeah that didn't add anything it like [TS]

that's the stuff they cut it for a [TS]

reason you know right right of course [TS]

but it's still need to see it you've [TS]

seen every year you know square [TS]

centimeter of this movie again and again [TS]

because it doesn't need to be in the [TS]

  movie though [TS]

and you're right i just ate it's an [TS]

extra scene collectors thing I have a [TS]

copy of you like the role playing game 4 [TS]

star wars and they had like photo in [TS]

certain parts of it and there's a photo [TS]

in there of a scene that I couldn't [TS]

remember from the movie which is from [TS]

Jedi it's like a sandstorm we're getting [TS]

back on the money fuckin and like which [TS]

i think is a cutscene from Jedi and I [TS]

was just like well where is this from [TS]

like how can i find this where is it [TS]

like that and to see a movie that like [TS]

like greg did like you know inside and [TS]

out like you know every scene every line [TS]

every little detail and all of a sudden [TS]

someone tells you about the way there's [TS]

this other hole like you know a [TS]

10-minute scene and you'll be like what [TS]

it's like looking at looking at the [TS]

storyboards or the the production art [TS]

you know it's like oh wow you know I [TS]

collected all that the cards bedsheets [TS]

the double album that folded open this [TS]

the visual book that was just a [TS]

collection of stills from the movie I i [TS]

devoured this stuff and then the special [TS]

editions came along and and just kind of [TS]

  shit all over it [TS]

I mean you know and I was an age where [TS]

like I was 17 or something and so you [TS]

know watching that was it was really [TS]

exciting at the time and I think it took [TS]

a while before we started to think like [TS]

one you know maybe this is her tampered [TS]

with something I think you know it sort [TS]

of felt wrong right away the ring they [TS]

put around the death star explosion of [TS]

some stuff that's all wrong i don't like [TS]

all wrong way although we did we did [TS]

take delight in coming out of the movie [TS]

theater from watching star wars and [TS]

saying loudly to everybody I can't [TS]

believe the death star actually blew up [TS]

the moon this time we were assholes i [TS]

did like the the the idea of the the [TS]

things they couldn't do in the dogfight [TS]

that they try to do better [TS]

that was a noble effort I so I think the [TS]

cg dated too badly for really but at [TS]

least at least that was like you can [TS]

imagine that they would have filmed that [TS]

scene like that whereas for example the [TS]

establishing shot mostly they never [TS]

would have found that like that with [TS]

those camera moves and always kept it [TS]

was generally never thought I was just [TS]

showing off right and that that feels [TS]

that feels cheap yet and it's not it [TS]

doesn't fit in with the movie they would [TS]

have shot those angles they wouldn't [TS]

shop those those actions they would have [TS]

done those camera moves just from a [TS]

different movie it's it doesn't belong [TS]

there at all yeah so the I think see I [TS]

don't even have the originals in any [TS]

form now i think the the DVD [TS]

transference of the laser disc is what i [TS]

  have in those [TS]

you know i think i have those and I may [TS]

have those somewhere that's what I used [TS]

to have now they did actually release a [TS]

DVD version right that that has the [TS]

original untampered versions on it [TS]

yeah they're not like its standard-def [TS]

  horrible quality [TS]

well it's exactly what my understanding [TS]

is it's exactly what's on the laser [TS]

  discs [TS]

yeah but his worst quality than [TS]

laserdisc quality like they heavily [TS]

heavily compressed inch and shoved it on [TS]

my just watched it on a laserdisc and i [TS]

will say the quality is not that great [TS]

know about the quality of my DVD as i [TS]

have the DVD transfers of that when i [TS]

watch that as compared to the hidden [TS]

original new hope that's on one of my [TS]

official star wars dvds that the [TS]

transfers look better I don't they clean [TS]

them up or something that it's they that [TS]

is surprising to me I mean I know [TS]

they've already went on HDTV and they're [TS]

all standard yeah you know I have to [TS]

zoom in on mine just take it even fill [TS]

up the screen because it's widescreen [TS]

it's a widescreen format laserdisc but [TS]

laser discs were only 43 so you get bars [TS]

  all the way around [TS]

what is best in your mind if I can't [TS]

really watch it as easily in my no oh [TS]

yes you can write i believe when they [TS]

release the blu-rays they're going to [TS]

release a version of the movie but it's [TS]

not going to be cleaned up in any way of [TS]

the original I don't think that's the [TS]

case i'll be very surprised i mean they [TS]

really so there's also technically [TS]

there's another edition right like there [TS]

because there's the specialist and I [TS]

have like a set i have two sets of VHS [TS]

tapes i have the original like you know [TS]

early nineties version i guess and then [TS]

these but i do have a special edition [TS]

version on VHS and i believe the [TS]

versions that were then subsequently [TS]

released on DVD have further changes in [TS]

them because yet I for example they have [TS]

hayden christensen in there there's an [TS]

ultimate edition i guess is what I'm [TS]

  sorry [TS]

Hayden so maidens con Hayden Planetarium [TS]

i don't know i keep forgetting that [TS]

version and that's the version that I've [TS]

got your brain protecting you from it's [TS]

a leave the fact i actually don't even [TS]

own star wars on DVD which feels weird [TS]

  to me [TS]

wow I mean I bought the laser discs with [TS]

the extent of transferring them to my [TS]

computer and making dvds out of them and [TS]

then was stymied on several occasions [TS]

where i try to actually do that's just [TS]

go download them they're easier to find [TS]

for now yes but I own the [TS]

I got a you have no idea so I acquired a [TS]

laserdisc player that my best friend's [TS]

dad just happened to be throwing away [TS]

after i already had the laser discs and [TS]

was like how the hell am I ever coming [TS]

so i have this latest player which is [TS]

dedicated to playing Star Wars it sits [TS]

on a shelf unless it's fucking stuck for [TS]

  words [TS]

Wow yes that's commitment that is [TS]

commitment i should be committed [TS]

yes that is for sure well what else any [TS]

anything that we haven't already covered [TS]

for for this in our special epic [TS]

two-part podcast almost certainly but [TS]

we'll have to just come back into a star [TS]

  trek is still better [TS]

oh no how you just wait you just SAT [TS]

through two hours just so you can pop [TS]

  that out didn't you [TS]

  victory is mine haha [TS]

can you imagine having a two-hour [TS]

conversation about any of the Star Trek [TS]

movies seriously stuck no its got milk [TS]

  is bad huh [TS]

he's almost as bad as Stockman healthy [TS]

guy is pretty much worse [TS]

that's the less interesting one who [TS]

wears a shirt with no patterns on the [TS]

stock McNulty I mean don't get me wrong [TS]

I like Star Wars it's very nice but uh [TS]

huh and scrapping all these bad but it [TS]

never really get it so I'm excited to [TS]

rewatch Star Wars movies right and then [TS]

when i rewatch them there's always parts [TS]

where i am incredibly bored and I think [TS]

this is much better in my mind then was [TS]

supposed to star trek one you know [TS]

well start required which is riveting [TS]

still going on it let's not lower [TS]

  celebrating his level [TS]

yes oh I'm not saying it's bad i'm just [TS]

saying that it is not i don't have a [TS]

special laser disc player to watch for [TS]

example i admit that i am a little bit [TS]

on the obsessive side just a time tab so [TS]

it's fun and it's fine but it's just [TS]

that it never really get captured my [TS]

imagination I'm a Star Trek fan I have [TS]

imagination I'm a Star Trek fan I have [TS]

breitling like most of you I've written [TS]

to star trek spec script [TS]

uh-huh Star Wars is a seminal cultural [TS]

event know and i agree with you and I [TS]

think that it changed the world [TS]

I think that the star wars as a cultural [TS]

phenomenon is more interesting than the [TS]

movies themselves the movies are you [TS]

trying to include the second movie in [TS]

that and even our own exists because of [TS]

the movies i know but it's it's taken [TS]

out a greater importance than the movies [TS]

itself there's a lot of people who are [TS]

wrong and they say empires a better [TS]

movie than Star Wars now there and know [TS]

how to run because because when you had [TS]

going into Empire you are coming from [TS]

Star Wars going into Star Wars you're [TS]

coming from zero your grading on degree [TS]

of difficulty will discuss in the next [TS]

episode if you could be on the go from a [TS]

world without star wars is not this is [TS]

not diving there's no degree of [TS]

difficulty because into a world with [TS]

Star Wars it changes everything [TS]

yes if you're doing the back half gainer [TS]

its core differently than if you just [TS]

doing straight you know yeah but on a [TS]

diving term yeah could you try i wanted [TS]

to back out of the ordinary game woman [TS]

yes but we understand the concept degree [TS]

of difficulty and this is the argument [TS]

  being made [TS]
