The Incomparable

39: Bigger on the Inside

the incomparable product test number 39 [TS]

may 2011 we're back on the hospital with [TS]

another of our flash podcasts talking [TS]

about the season of doctor who and [TS]

tonight we are going to talk about the [TS]

latest installment an episode called the [TS]

doctor's wife by renowned writer of [TS]

comics and novels and TV and movies and [TS]

all sorts of other things you know I [TS]

don't know songs stage plays poems [TS]

comics ice economics he actually gets [TS]

done bro he wrote a lot of them so we [TS]

  should say it twice [TS]

yeah exactly i'm here right here's a [TS]

Twitter feed Neil Neil Gaiman wrote this [TS]

episode the doctor's wife and so join me [TS]

today as you may have heard to talk [TS]

about it we have damn Ouran High Dam [TS]

  sandwiches [TS]

Glenn fleischmann how do and Scott [TS]

McNulty hello hello i enjoy how you say [TS]

  hello [TS]

thank you it's very exciting very [TS]

energetic which I like enthusiasm is [TS]

good so the doctor's wife this is [TS]

perhaps in some ways the most hyped [TS]

episode single episode of doctor who and [TS]

what it's in a long time i mean i think [TS]

if you take the sort of regenerations [TS]

and and season premieres and things like [TS]

that out of it just as a run-of-the-mill [TS]

standalone episode largely because it's [TS]

neil gaiman and he's got quite a [TS]

following himself but it you know the [TS]

fact is no matter whose name is on the [TS]

credits it's still an episode of Doctor [TS]

Who and it's something that needs to be [TS]

judged on its own merits i'm curious [TS]

what you guys what you guys thought [TS]

where you mean the hype was so huge that [TS]

it's kinda I felt on one level was going [TS]

to really hard for this episode to live [TS]

up to the hype and had a titillating [TS]

title right now just life [TS]

add me as it turns out was kind of a red [TS]

herring in some ways I you know I go [TS]

further and say that I think I think it [TS]

was a terrible title i think that it was [TS]

a title that was chosen for marketing or [TS]

services especially for the British [TS]

media to get all you know tutor about [TS]

  and go home [TS]

what does it mean to lead people astray [TS]

and when i when i read that one of the [TS]

other titles for it was bigger on the [TS]

inside i thought well that's your title [TS]

while the original title apparently was [TS]

the house of nut house of night is also [TS]

which is also pretty good I thought yeah [TS]

it's it's not appetizing pocket if it's [TS]

got something going on there [TS]

yeah the way it didn't I knew that going [TS]

in when i watch the episode I thought [TS]

that's not a great title for could have [TS]

called it behind the blue door as well [TS]

huh might have had some connotation [TS]

problems a lot of bigger on the inside [TS]

and around the inside i think that would [TS]

know that one of its a little it's a [TS]

little flip it's a little flip for them [TS]

yeah i feel i thought i'd have basically [TS]

no game and wrote a two-part christmas [TS]

episode and they managed to squeeze into [TS]

42 minutes or 48 minutes might have been [TS]

better and I might even better in a [TS]

Christmas episode VII I think that I i [TS]

don't mean it's bad but like I felt I [TS]

felt like there was so much that there [TS]

needed to be you know and I know that [TS]

they cut a bunch of stuff out [TS]

I mean like obviously you always do that [TS]

but I know specifically in this case the [TS]

machines that were cut out and I guess I [TS]

felt like again maybe part of this is [TS]

just coming up to the hype and i find [TS]

that often with things that are really [TS]

hyped like this my first watching is not [TS]

a good not as positive because of the [TS]

hype and then after I've already seen it [TS]

was declared never seen it you know i [TS]

have to worry about the hype but i [TS]

haven't had a chance to rewatch it so [TS]

but apparently i live under a rock [TS]

because the first time i heard of that [TS]

this was even going to be like a hyped [TS]

thing was last week when i was on [TS]

another incomparable and someone mention [TS]

that neil gaiman had Roach doctor who [TS]

episode was like I should probably watch [TS]

the hockey ball week who I'd been in [TS]

there are villa in Afghanistan but I i [TS]

thought was pretty good i mean i think [TS]

one was saying about it kind of feeling [TS]

like a Christmas episode is right on [TS]

because you know you know gaming rights [TS]

kind of like fairytale s kind of things [TS]

and I think that that kind of feeling [TS]

came through the episode i think it had [TS]

it had that same kind of had more whimsy [TS]

they're used to in this sort of [TS]

Mythology episodes of the show that you [TS]

know chasing the big plot arc for the [TS]

season and I mean I like it had you know [TS]

it had the death the Time Lords [TS]

references had humanity that little bit [TS]

i should listen to matt smith four times [TS]

figure out what he was saying [TS]

when he says to him you want to be [TS]

forgiven don't you and he said don't we [TS]

all but I couldn't make it out it was [TS]

bloody have trouble with keep mumbles a [TS]

  lot [TS]

yeah i got that a previous episode oh [TS]

yeah but I thought you said big themes [TS]

that had the righteous Time Lord you [TS]

know righteous Time Lord it had a madman [TS]

with the box i don't have the box [TS]

anymore which is which is great so he's [TS]

left to entirely his own devices and [TS]

then he goes all MacGyver so he built [TS]

stuff out of nothing which we love with [TS]

the doctor has to work without having [TS]

his TARDIS with him but he hasn't [TS]

started with them and then you have [TS]

worrying Amy screaming running down [TS]

hallways which is always good almost [TS]

falling down pits anytime you have [TS]

characters almost falling down pits [TS]

  great episode [TS]

alright you don't worry dies so just i [TS]

know i would you got it wasn't gonna [TS]

happen through I got to be going like at [TS]

least even killed him with aa realize [TS]

that I didn't remember that you're so [TS]

right i was but he's just gonna be rain [TS]

Joe because he actually died every [TS]

episode behind the first episode this [TS]

season to order a terrible he died the [TS]

second but can they go so far around [TS]

that becomes funny again I'd like that [TS]

worried also you have criticized [TS]

worrying previous episodes I think [TS]

Arthur Darvill is a is a perfectly fine [TS]

actor and their moments and illegal [TS]

yeah it pulls it out of times but this [TS]

thing about they've actually the point [TS]

  he's a nurse and I i actually the [TS]

moments where he's actually professional [TS]

you're like oh he's not just some guy [TS]

you know amy was like most of the [TS]

Companions of doctor takes are aimless [TS]

people then figure out the way the world [TS]

they're not as directed Martha Jones [TS]

maybe notwithstanding soundtrack to be a [TS]

doctor and she fell into running along [TS]

with other people don't know whether way [TS]

and he's like he's got a profession is a [TS]

nurse she does job damn well and when [TS]

they actually need medical help [TS]

he's there and I actually like the fact [TS]

that the Rory you know he could he when [TS]

he turned off the shield's he was the [TS]

telepathic interface you know all the [TS]

things that actually the pretty one [TS]

he's thinking I agree with good i really [TS]

i mean i think i think he hasn't even [TS]

given a like a fair shake basically and [TS]

I and I think it was nice to see him get [TS]

much more stuff to do in this episode [TS]

and I feel like he's that I feel like [TS]

he's a good character who is then [TS]

misused as a plot device [TS]

I mean I really I and that's where the [TS]

  deaths come [TS]

and I think that although you know what [TS]

you know there was a nice touch in this [TS]

episode i thought was in that that scene [TS]

where they have to telepathically unlock [TS]

the door to the control room and she and [TS]

Amy thinks about what these you know [TS]

those those words mean to her right and [TS]

the scene was a joy where she had [TS]

enlarged their lights yeah delight your [TS]

pictures your wedding right which is I [TS]

thought was a nice touch it was not [TS]

because it's one of those things that it [TS]

was a subtle reinforcement of their [TS]

relationship and we've seen a lot of [TS]

like late-night your fit right and so it [TS]

was nice to see that like oh that's [TS]

that's the way it should be right like [TS]

that's the relationship we want to root [TS]

for is the one that's that sort of you [TS]

know that's solid and they can't be [TS]

holding a bigger wedge for us to his [TS]

time goes on it's like now Amy's already [TS]

you know sort of over the doctor not [TS]

always sure but we're getting further [TS]

and further away from that and now it's [TS]

like she's like oh oh you're in love [TS]

with the TARDIS and you always have been [TS]

and of course she's always with you and [TS]

now she's been personified so that wedge [TS]

gets even broader there's not like less [TS]

and less of a romantic thing over time [TS]

yeah 3 people who tardis is one too many [TS]

it's probably a good rule of thumb [TS]

  that's not a picture I mean there's also [TS]

some there is some great dialogue [TS]

especially I thought the interactions [TS]

between the doctor in the TARDIS were [TS]

for the most part that was the part I [TS]

  enjoyed I don't think the plot I didn't [TS]

pay much attention to in some ways [TS]

well minutes they need to stop a even [TS]

they even admit that the the root of [TS]

this story is just what if the TARDIS [TS]

were personified and that's what this [TS]

episode is it's the doctor gets the one [TS]

chance to interact with the TARDIS and [TS]

actually talk with her in a bit of a [TS]

comic book filled from that standpoint [TS]

is I haven't allowed the Doctor Who [TS]

comics I think they're sort of thin but [TS]

the ones i read our little more like [TS]

this there's a lot of what if things [TS]

that are hard to do on screen I [TS]

understand the radio plays a bit like [TS]

that as well where it's things that like [TS]

it would cost such a fortune to do the s [TS]

that this ssei for it so they can't do [TS]

it then attended do so they have stories [TS]

that play out the comic books and same [TS]

thing here like there are aspects of [TS]

this that that they figure way to do [TS]

this without it being expensive but [TS]

being interesting in the same kind of [TS]

what-if scenario apparently it's quite [TS]

  it was quite extreme [TS]

and some which is what has this season [TS]

instead of last they ran out of money [TS]

  last year that's funny [TS]

you got a real game and talking about [TS]

all the scenes they caught on the [TS]

specimens in the special features but [TS]

yeah i'm wondering that's why i say that [TS]

did feel like a spectacular that they [TS]

pulled off i mean i think it had a I [TS]

think it a good through-line I think [TS]

it's some good like B&C plots to it I [TS]

thought it was very very neil gaiman [TS]

dish without violating the canon of the [TS]

universe but it wasn't a more to that [TS]

point it makes deliveries i was reading [TS]

the wikipedia article afterwards there's [TS]

law stuff I didn't get but they're [TS]

apparently a lot of direct references [TS]

into that into past you know third [TS]

fourth doctor stories in terms of things [TS]

like getting rid of the rooms in the [TS]

target ordering a bite extra thrust [TS]

  those are all references [TS]

I mean what I really castro valley yeah [TS]

yeah i like to put the the over i loved [TS]

seeing the old control room [TS]

archives and spending the night the [TS]

Tenth Doctor I that gave me a brief [TS]

paying of like oh they kept that very [TS]

radical it's a standing for for more [TS]

than a year it's at the doctor who [TS]

experience now in life thoughts all you [TS]

want but they can't be blown it up [TS]

no they they blow up little parts [TS]

actually you can see at the doctor who [TS]

organized it is that it's scorched a [TS]

little bit from the pyrotechnics of of [TS]

david tennant's regeneration but they [TS]

left it standing for like a year because [TS]

they knew they were going to use it in [TS]

that episode and got delayed so they [TS]

kept standing until they shot that scene [TS]

in this episode and then they finally [TS]

could take it down but it was a really [TS]

cool you know kind of moment to see Amy [TS]

and Rory run-in ok that's the old [TS]

control room of this place [TS]

yeah it was good so so what did you [TS]

think of saran Jones as interests who [TS]

you know that but the personification of [TS]

the TARDIS I thought she was kind of [TS]

appropriately batty and trying to figure [TS]

out what it like i like i like the touch [TS]

that the idea is the TARDIS is eternal [TS]

it lives everywhere in time and space [TS]

and so doesn't know how to react when it [TS]

suddenly living time linearly because it [TS]

knows everything that's going to happen [TS]

and everything that has happened and is [TS]

trying to just get a grasp on what it's [TS]

like to be one of these people walking [TS]

  around [TS]

yeah I thought she did a great job and [TS]

she held her own you know that was and [TS]

that's the important thing right [TS]

the TARDIS as glamazon like the TARDIS [TS]

is the doctors constant companion right [TS]

  and in that way [TS]

his is sort of original his partner [TS]

and it needs to be a symbiotic equal [TS]

when given take relationship and so she [TS]

stole her own right exactly which makes [TS]

  it earlier [TS]

not only is that funny that you know I [TS]

know I told I stole a Time Lord escaped [TS]

which is the just don't understand this [TS]

entire series mythos but it also puts [TS]

them on equal footing or puts her one up [TS]

on him but that means you know you can't [TS]

take her as being anything less than the [TS]

  doctors match [TS]

  I love and I guess I don't know there's [TS]

lots of great little dialogue bits but [TS]

my favorite possibly was about the the [TS]

  the door [TS]

you never read the instructions on the [TS]

door it says polls it's what do you do [TS]

every time you push this was to open [TS]

outwards yeah that was that was really [TS]

funny although i believe that that is [TS]

about the panel that's got the phone in [TS]

  it [TS]

not the whole door but you know it was [TS]

too funny to what I was amusing else [TS]

because i have noted earlier in the [TS]

episode because they showed it a shot oh [TS]

they linger on it right and I was like [TS]

good you're looking at the wrong day i [TS]

was i was thinking the exact same thing [TS]

it's funny they opened the wrong way and [TS]

then they mentioned it was like oh [TS]

  that's great yeah I thought she's I [TS]

thought you did a lovely job of having [TS]

um you know we have too many fish out of [TS]

water there's always the you know what [TS]

is this thing you call love you know I [TS]

always kinda hate the android alien [TS]

whatever and she's like no she just had [TS]

a hard time for what now was in verb [TS]

tenses but then she got the hang of it [TS]

and was totally on board and I you know [TS]

and put the whole thing where she's [TS]

she's playing him she knows she has a [TS]

  limited time with him [TS]

it really felt like this beautiful [TS]

little how to do between the two of them [TS]

as opposed to being like she wasn't [TS]

important she wasn't serious she wasn't [TS]

larger-than-life but i'm not even that [TS]

great line she had the you know she's [TS]

living things you know you're bigger on [TS]

the inside right that's why they're so i [TS]

think that would have been a good title [TS]

is this i just it isn't just flip it you [TS]

think it's going to be and then you [TS]

realize that does have this extra [TS]

meaning when she says that I thought the [TS]

one the one place where this episode did [TS]

kind of fall down and i think and i [TS]

liked it but I i think this has to do [TS]

with the fact that it's so packed and [TS]

they had to fit in the in the time slot [TS]

and it really was probably more like 60 [TS]

minutes worth like you said like a [TS]

little special is the stuff on the [TS]

dammit before we get into the act in the [TS]

TARDIS and Serrato while with Raymond [TS]

Raymond while the doctor and interests [TS]

are building the kind of replacement [TS]

artists the stuff with with auntie and [TS]

uncle or people that kind of like [TS]

they're there for to advance the plot [TS]

and then they literally are just like [TS]

now this interesting stuff there right [TS]

that they are patchwork and they're [TS]

assembled and there but the thralls of [TS]

of the house and I felt like you wanted [TS]

more of that you wanted to see who they [TS]

were and why they were this way and you [TS]

wanted more of them being kind of [TS]

dominated and threatened by the house so [TS]

that when the house goes into the TARDIS [TS]

it's you know it's scary it's scarier [TS]

and they die and it's more affecting and [TS]

you don't like the food i love the food [TS]

but the unit was really just sort of [TS]

like why not let's make it a nude was [TS]

just there was not another was a hat-tip [TS]

yeah but it wasn't it there was no point [TS]

you're right it didn't matter that it [TS]

was in it I thought like the stakes [TS]

could have been up to a little bit more [TS]

than either let's give him that one line [TS]

about another route I couldn't say it [TS]

right but what are you going to cut [TS]

right i mean that's sort of how I felt [TS]

is that this is obviously the stuff that [TS]

they would you would need to cut because [TS]

you can't cut all this other stuff but [TS]

it did suffer i think because we didn't [TS]

get enough of that time with those [TS]

characters are the first scene is really [TS]

quite remarkable especially in a show [TS]

that is for children because the first [TS]

scene is essentially these two people [TS]

leading a third person and who says I [TS]

guess it so it's me and they're like [TS]

yeah it's gonna be you and what here's [TS]

what we're going to do we're going to [TS]

kill you and stick somebody else inside [TS]

your body and she's like I'm scared well [TS]

I would be it's gonna hurt like hell and [TS]

  then bang she's dead [TS]

I mean wow what it is trigger dark dark [TS]

yellow is the implied that I don't know [TS]

why she's a name and the other three [TS]

have character attributes but it seems [TS]

to be implied that they've done this so [TS]

many times before that you know maybe [TS]

there's not much of a person in there I [TS]

don't know that may be the limiting [TS]

factor later I don't know I was little I [TS]

was a little sad that the I mean I don't [TS]

know if you want call red herring around [TS]

i get and it made sense at the time lord [TS]

angle with the mail and every getting [TS]

him getting mail and everything I [TS]

although it was entirely i mean i guess [TS]

the house sent that last message to try [TS]

and entice them they're right but yeah I [TS]

  mean it was cool [TS]

it as someone who has not watched a lot [TS]

of the prior like the non modern doctor [TS]

who you always feel like you you lack a [TS]

little bit not having seen all the you [TS]

know the other time lords in except for [TS]

you know the master master yeah and a [TS]

little bit of you have more cancel it [TS]

was cool to have his attention like I [TS]

don't like it was cool to hear about [TS]

like he's like all the Corsair that was [TS]

great that was like oh wow that sounds [TS]

cool like what i wanna i wanna know more [TS]

  about that guy [TS]

ya he's dead yeah but they always got it [TS]

he's gonna get to see the arm the [TS]

Corsair the math you don't get to see [TS]

his arms and guests are the arm of the [TS]

questionnaire or said no that was good [TS]

actually that is a apparently I i saw [TS]

this episode once and I can't have no [TS]

recollection of it all but Patrick [TS]

travels last episode 1969 the war games [TS]

there's a scene where the doctor i [TS]

believe puts a message he has to some of [TS]

the time lords and he puts a message in [TS]

a cube and sends it off and neil gaiman [TS]

said oh I want to do I want to use that [TS]

that we haven't seen that since 1969 [TS]

always thought that was cool [TS]

so that's what those cubes are is [TS]

actually a reference to Doctor Who from [TS]

you know 40-plus years ago which is [TS]

nobody was a giant doctor he's a huge [TS]

Doctor Who yeah I can believe it also [TS]

there's the developed telepathic thing [TS]

which they use at times seems like it [TS]

was used quite a bit this time I thought [TS]

the way I just love the fact that it's [TS]

like what's going on it's like getting [TS]

some kind of message it's painful like I [TS]

either this or this beauty of in the [TS]

previous seasons when you actually [TS]

including this one when they had to use [TS]

a time when they call it say a look at [TS]

artists on the wrist thing it's a [TS]

teleportation the time vortex or you're [TS]

at a time or text me later or give or [TS]

take particular image and holes to use [TS]

it really it doesn't feel good to use [TS]

and love the fact that like there's [TS]

these things like it's hack together [TS]

technology or or it's painful to receive [TS]

the telepathic message from the TARDIS [TS]

not just like oh its ethereal wonderful [TS]

  states like now okay [TS]

crimson 11 delight in the great words [TS]

that i can remember it must be a real [TS]

word because your game and used it and [TS]

  it perhaps not [TS]

caracal parents file yeah I don't know [TS]

  it wasn't [TS]

you know running around in quarters it's [TS]

doctor who write it was a little bit [TS]

silly but at the same time I like they [TS]

were in the TARDIS in there and and it's [TS]

you get the invoice very retro wouldn't [TS]

normally be you know quite that way but [TS]

because the house is running things he's [TS]

basically just making them run around [TS]

and entertain him but it was cool to see [TS]

them to told me this opportunity to say [TS]

  menacingly Michael she missed [TS]

opportunity minutes with a and the house [TS]

always wins you know haha because it [TS]

always bet on black and yeah [TS]

Wesley Snipes with whatever lies gone [TS]

  bad [TS]

Scott great ways did I like it yes i did [TS]

i did have one problem with it will have [TS]

two problems with that both of which are [TS]

not important but I'll bring them up [TS]

because that's the kind of person I am I [TS]

so you know the doctor gets this message [TS]

in there like who we have to go outside [TS]

the universe at the doctors like I've [TS]

been outside the university everyone's [TS]

like oh how do we get 30 days ago it's [TS]

really hard at two seconds later that's [TS]

how do you reverse not so hard and the [TS]

other thing is that they bade this big [TS]

deal about the doctors like well I can [TS]

finally talk to the TARDIS and yet the [TS]

TARDIS can send telepathic messages to [TS]

Rory and how hard is it the computer in [TS]

  Star Trek can talk [TS]

how hard is it to hook up something in [TS]

the TARDIS they can let the time I think [TS]

there was dialogue about the actual [TS]

being well yeah I mean they see I think [TS]

Amy said said you know you [TS]

why don't why doesn't the terms to talk [TS]

to you and there was an answer and it [TS]

was something like that all it did you [TS]

know it is its eternal and it just [TS]

doesn't work that way and it wouldn't [TS]

understand it doesn't mean it was it was [TS]

explaining it away but I appreciate that [TS]

they that they did it yesterday anything [TS]

then he tries to explain it and then [TS]

made clear get it says its basic ways [TS]

yeah I actually one of the things I [TS]

really like about the University of [TS]

having read as i mentioned on a recent [TS]

podcast i read these books you know why [TS]

Brian Greene about parallel universes [TS]

and about string theory and he tries [TS]

very hard to explain these incredibly [TS]

crazy complex in 11 dimensional [TS]

universes and curled-up dimensions by [TS]

using metaphors and and you get you to [TS]

get the distinct sense that that the [TS]

metaphor is not really right but it's [TS]

the clothes closest we can get for my [TS]

  puny brain to comprehend [TS]

and so I love that in we've seen it [TS]

twice the cs and I think we're the [TS]

doctors not like that at all [TS]

he says if it helps then great but it's [TS]

really actually not like that wasn't [TS]

there is an XKCD strip like last week [TS]

that had the same joke about cavities [TS]

like a you know like a rubber sheet we [TS]

putting in what's pulling things down if [TS]

there's no gravity it's not like that at [TS]

all but here would understand otherwise [TS]

use your dimensional representation of a [TS]

three-dimensional universe just if you [TS]

know just go with it [TS]

I didn't think this was the most quantum [TS]

leap like episode in terms of [TS]

explanation where the TARDIS is like you [TS]

know she's like you never take me where [TS]

you don't take me we're trying to go and [TS]

take you where you need to be yes and [TS]

then I was like I was like you know we [TS]

can always stopping and never be able to [TS]

get home trying to make that last leap [TS]

home and I just had that sense of I [TS]

thought actually the modern series have [TS]

been a lot more like that where the [TS]

doctor sets out to go somewhere winds up [TS]

somewhere else or just find some other [TS]

animal serious was like that to mean [TS]

that was why that was such a beautiful [TS]

line is that it's always been the case [TS]

that that the doctor ends up right i [TS]

mean that's the premise of the show is [TS]

that hehe how does he go to be in all of [TS]

these places and and everything goes a [TS]

little wonky knee goes unexpected places [TS]

and the answer is that the TARDIS is [TS]

  taking you out [TS]

I always felt that was the case right [TS]

that that if he goes where he's needed [TS]

and that's why he goes there but so [TS]

having her say no I take you where you [TS]

need to be it's just all those the [TS]

argument that because everything is [TS]

  interconnected in tiny widely [TS]

wibbly-wobbly that that there could be [TS]

the notion that artist takes to where he [TS]

was because that's where already was [TS]

because he had to be there at that [TS]

particular time that he wasn't the [TS]

universe we've been destroyed or I want [TS]

you to explain that and by some i had [TS]

medical 11 or was it meant oh very well [TS]

I can't walking on your destinations [TS]

there are plenty of episodes in which he [TS]

actually goes somewhere and it happens [TS]

that when he's there something terrible [TS]

happens or he's the cause of it such as [TS]

midnight in the right tenant years right [TS]

but I'm you want me right it's like time [TS]

are there so that would so that he would [TS]

be able to do that i don't i'll also say [TS]

this to this remind anyone of the star [TS]

trek episode with the souring the milk [TS]

episode the no no well child every tiny [TS]

galaxy's child every time you touch me [TS]

your time you touch the ship you're [TS]

touching me because Leah Brahms is the [TS]

holodeck of the which is actually the [TS]

enterprise computer while it was ya [TS]

later my only other episode the man i [TS]

really enjoyed that you know like what's [TS]

my name and so he's going there sexy to [TS]

you sweet i was I mean it's funny lot of [TS]

fun lots of funny stuff right i mean III [TS]

you know it's it could have been it [TS]

could've been dark I was actually [TS]

worried it would be scarier and it [TS]

wasn't a scary episode really my kids [TS]

weren't scared I mean it was it was [TS]

important that's atomized the your [TS]

breathing would yeah well where was he [TS]

he was standing over there oh well [TS]

or actually that that's a funny line or [TS]

distribute stay and stay out of the way [TS]

how we know where you're landing or I [TS]

don't know it's okay so no I mean lots [TS]

of funny stuff and obviously written by [TS]

somebody who loves the show and it was a [TS]

good episode I feel like like Dan [TS]

actually like on one level it's hard to [TS]

judge it having only seen at one time [TS]

  because because the hype [TS]

it's very hard for me to calibrate sort [TS]

of where it really ranks because there [TS]

was so much hype going in and and [TS]

honestly watching it with my kids I [TS]

actually had a little bit of a sinking [TS]

feeling when i started to watch it [TS]

because I thought man you know how can [TS]

it live up to all of the hype here I [TS]

feel like I need to just kinda let it [TS]

wash over me and and not not get too [TS]

excited about it so I really don't know [TS]

how to ultimately judging other than to [TS]

say that I did like it i thought it was [TS]

well written it did feel a rush but so [TS]

many of the Moffett episodes especially [TS]

these last couple years have felt rushed [TS]

to felt totally insanely packed over [TS]

packed with stuff and yeah I wish this [TS]

was an hour-long episode because i think [TS]

that they could have used it but i do [TS]

think it was beautifully written in many [TS]

parts and and was well done i'm not sure [TS]

measures up to some of the best episodes [TS]

of the new rebooted doctor who though [TS]

including a bunch by steven moffat a few [TS]

by russell davis to it was never any [TS]

real sense of actual threat i mean i [TS]

think that's it is like the house was [TS]

ominous and it was evil and so forth but [TS]

you never felt there was any doctor [TS]

wasn't about to learn new truths about [TS]

  himself percent [TS]

but he wasn't going to know one's got [TS]

everything yeah well nor were they nor [TS]

were they put in I mean except for [TS]

really want me an imaginary Rory torment [TS]

right but it was not like amy was Amy [TS]

and Rory and I believe we call it war [TS]

meant i'm going to go very quickly that [TS]

we don't we don't know about you now [TS]

sorry no the contract oh you call it [TS]

that no but you know it wasn't as if [TS]

they were they were tortured or [TS]

something like that they were sort of [TS]

scared a little bit and they have to run [TS]

around but that wasn't really the point [TS]

again it was perfect it was more of a [TS]

cardiovascular workout i like the idea [TS]

  though [TS]

what's scary is the idea that some you [TS]

know another malevolent consciousness is [TS]

taken over the TARDIS and it's going to [TS]

fly around I mean that was that was [TS]

scary in the sense that you know it's [TS]

we've come to know and love the TARDIS [TS]

and now there's this bad guy inside her [TS]

that's nice but he's going to the [TS]

universe but there are no other time [TS]

lord so the house is going to die [TS]

well I think the doctors you'll figure [TS]

something we'll find something else to [TS]

eat you know he'll need a black hole [TS]

like something i don't know what the [TS]

next am I said that are suffering but he [TS]

will go to hand planet [TS]

yeah and where that that is pure roar [TS]

meant sorry also good i am your dad it's [TS]

not forget it don't matter it's got on [TS]

you got rolled mental and I hope now I [TS]

you know it's over time moving on this [TS]

podcast was really can't enter this [TS]

podcast so I rod is not add up [TS]

oh and we were left with a brief tidbit [TS]

relating presumably to the to the [TS]

overarching plot of the season in that [TS]

the TARDIS told Rory something before [TS]

she became the targets again about the [TS]

river in a forest I remember but [TS]

sometimes important i guess i would [TS]

appreciate away at it wasn't like the [TS]

only way out of the forest the only [TS]

water in the forest is the river the [TS]

river right out what it is concerning [TS]

tonight you know what that Holly you [TS]

don't know anybody know rivering be [TS]

  ridiculous [TS]

the i'm waiting for the scene where mrs. [TS]

worry I'm still worried about is what [TS]

shut the hell up about the doctor time [TS]

we all know we got other things to deal [TS]

  with you're going to [TS]

start every episode with her during the [TS]

Aurora's going to say you're still [TS]

thinking about it aren't you [TS]

well least they didn't end this episode [TS]

with the doctor flipping a switch and [TS]

  check on her [TS]

alright so i was waiting for that to see [TS]

that is wreaking he's making quantum up [TS]

quantum bunk belts it's gonna it's all [TS]

and jump difficulty between one and two [TS]

bunk beds they're just gonna you're just [TS]

gonna go to the the next step which is [TS]

going to be flipping and going [TS]

  boy-girl-boy-boy-girl-boy-girl i did [TS]

like the line about the bunk beds [TS]

it's cool to bed with the ladder how do [TS]

you put in that your room on kids are [TS]

  awesome [TS]

my children will soon discover that [TS]

lucky if i give them a ladder [TS]

oh no so it so any other thoughts about [TS]

about the the what-is-it the doctor's [TS]

wife was fun and amusing which is kind [TS]

  of nice [TS]

yeah it was i liked it to be I mean my [TS]

complaint about the pirate episode is [TS]

that they felt like they didn't have [TS]

enough material and I'd rather I'd [TS]

rather have overflowing with material [TS]

more material than you can do anything [TS]

with then than the other so you know it [TS]

as a standalone it was much work much [TS]

  better [TS]

that's the only problem with the pirate [TS]

episode was that it was horrible [TS]

haha so 11 one little flaw fatal flaw [TS]

they could have just fixed it i mean if [TS]

they just tweaked it a little bit it [TS]

  would have been horrible [TS]

yeah well let's not talk about that [TS]

people are angry at us for being so down [TS]

on that episode so it's all like [TS]

everything from now on I honest so I oh [TS]

I watched it on I rented it from itunes [TS]

so i want to i wonder if anyone else had [TS]

this problem where they were on the [TS]

makeshift TARDIS and I couldn't hear [TS]

anything that they were saying to each [TS]

other just my ok 10 years it was tough [TS]

  because the general problems [TS]

yeah I think they just there's a bad mix [TS]

on the shade the problem is that i think [TS]

maybe part of it is because all of us [TS]

are Americans it's it's sometimes hard [TS]

to figure out what they're saying that's [TS]

uncle own rules a bit uncle was Welsh i [TS]

think i'm using a weird accent I think [TS]

was fascinating actually I think it's if [TS]

I discovered if I can't figure out in [TS]

the UK accent is its well we'll just [TS]

call it Welsh he said it just like [TS]

Catherine zeta-jones so have you ever [TS]

  heard about Cheryl strangely [TS]

first-order have you ever heard her talk [TS]

when she wasn't character she talks yuge [TS]

it does not correspond it is making the [TS]

show they make the show in Wales so [TS]

that's not that's not surprising they [TS]

actually make a show in Catherine [TS]

zeta-jones oh she's making around the [TS]

inside optic oh my ok so next week we [TS]

have a two-parter by Matthew Graham who [TS]

was a writer for life on Mars and its [TS]

  successor ashes to ashes [TS]

he also wrote david tennant episode that [TS]

was a low budget last minute fill-in [TS]

episode i believe called fear her which [TS]

was terrible i couldn't even watch them [TS]

when i started watching so bad I've [TS]

never is the only Doctor Who and the [TS]

miles you don't have watched that was [TS]

one of the kids drawing thing yeah we [TS]

will struggle but they didn't have the [TS]

money to like do the I think originally [TS]

they were gonna be like animated parts [TS]

where the doctor was in a kids drawing [TS]

and then they didn't have the money for [TS]

head so they just had like a shadow on a [TS]

wall and a picture of this carriage I [TS]

there's a bit more uses the one is [TS]

always uses a sonic screwdriver to knock [TS]

a piece of drawing out of the air it was [TS]

just lie here s if he does the Olympic [TS]

torch in the london 2012 olympics in [TS]

that episode that episode but you know [TS]

but life on Mars was good so I you know [TS]

did I like ashes ashes as a guy i watch [TS]

the entire series those good performance [TS]

in the first couple of that but so so [TS]

  he's got you know he's he's got a [TS]

special i think i think it's worth not [TS]

blaming him for fear her [TS]

everybody's got a bad episode and I'm [TS]

but a two-part episode i am looking [TS]

forward to it actually I think I think [TS]

it sounds from what I've heard is creepy [TS]

it's kind of dark and creepy and it said [TS]

I think in the near future and so it's [TS]

yeah it's i'm looking forward to it so I [TS]

guess we'll be back in two weeks then to [TS]

talk about the the two-parter as a whole [TS]

rather talk about how worried eyes maybe [TS]

I'll twice twice actually but I believe [TS]

this episode is is about it i don't [TS]

think this is a spoiler it's it's called [TS]

it called it the red flash I think right [TS]

i think that i think there's like the [TS]

idea here is that there's like cloning [TS]

involved so if we're very very lucky [TS]

the clone war ii and killing them twice [TS]

or like seven or eight times because why [TS]

  not why not [TS]

it's like I mean buying in bulk yeah [TS]

guess I got extra six [TS]

back of robberies at costco I was just [TS]

at costco or you picked up a 12 pack of [TS]

Rory's you get a palette and I'm still [TS]

  open [TS]

i'm still holding out for the return of [TS]

bird Cribbins though I know now it's a [TS]

  party that's impossible universally [TS]

episode when I just I want him back i [TS]

miss them i will be returning [TS]

that's right said fred on that note i am [TS]

going to wrap it up for this flash [TS]

incomparable episode we'll have a [TS]

regular episode in the next day or so [TS]

but thank you for listening to our [TS]

doctor who recaps will be back in two [TS]

weeks and thank you for recapping and [TS]

reviewing the doctor's wife by Neil [TS]

Gaiman thank you Scott McNulty those [TS]

like youjizz Thank You Glenn fleischmann [TS]

thank you and thank you very much mr. [TS]

dan more it's always a pleasure until [TS]

next time when worried eyes again but [TS]

how this is jason l for the incumbent [TS]

  thankful [TS]
