The Incomparable

18: Christmas with the Doctor

the incomparable podcast episode 80 [TS]

  christmas 2010 [TS]

this is us this is a quick one yes it's [TS]

a quick flash it's a flash pass [TS]

yes the Rose recent podcasts we'll see [TS]

you next year and then this can be like [TS]

a surprise haha Christmas podcast [TS]

podcast it's a Christmas miracle [TS]

oh yeah Oh featuring Jim Nabors god no [TS]

this podcast is over but that began this [TS]

podcast has just begun hundred a hundred [TS]

and then to see that's when you that's [TS]

what you gotta admit that's when you cut [TS]

in the doctor came in [TS]

  it's being comfortable podcast [TS]

  mobile [TS]

it's close to midnight we're getting [TS]

morning is ladies and gentlemen and you [TS]

can tell and it's Christmas night as we [TS]

record this i'm jason l and this is the [TS]

uncomfortable podcast after dark after [TS]

christmas a day and after most [TS]

importantly after the doctor who [TS]

christmas special the Christmas Carol [TS]

which aired today in both England and [TS]

the United States actually we could be [TS]

talking about this legally and not [TS]

because of bittorrent although I realize [TS]

that many of us probably saw it on [TS]

bittorrent I could say honestly want to [TS]

  make an admission here [TS]

listen the first episode of the new [TS]

Doctor Who that i have seen first by a [TS]

legal means I I 2i to just watch the BBC [TS]

america version of this with commercials [TS]

and everything and if you got some of [TS]

  the commercials [TS]

some of them were kind of interesting it [TS]

slightly did choices it makes thousands [TS]

  of universes at once [TS]

yeah it's hard to see infomercial are [TS]

just infomercial that's right and miss [TS]

Alice and commercial breaks are very [TS]

strange in Doctor Who there they're [TS]

  wrong [TS]

really yeah it was very strange to get [TS]

every time we hit a cliffhanger right [TS]

now what will happen and then to [TS]

actually go to a commercial break very [TS]

jarring is at least they don't edit [TS]

anything out so it was like an hour and [TS]

20 minutes with commercials but at least [TS]

they keep it all intact which is good [TS]

yes at one point that was the only way [TS]

you could watch television is with [TS]

commercials also me phones carry rotor [TS]

dials that's madness and that is a [TS]

plug-in all the lights that these days [TS]

they don't believe you let me introduce [TS]

my cast of characters by the way because [TS]

i'm drinking beer and and i realized [TS]

that i missed several important portions [TS]

of the format are joining us via Skype [TS]

from his iphone from somewhere in a wet [TS]

upstate New York where he wrote where he [TS]

celebrated the holiday with his family [TS]

DN more'n I Jason hi there i'll make you [TS]

say other things later using editing ha [TS]

and joining me from I think los angeles [TS]

greater los angeles where she is [TS]

celebrated the holiday with her family [TS]

rain Caldwell hi hello good to have [TS]

here from Philadelphia where he [TS]

  celebrated his holiday alone [TS]

it's got Mykelti oh excuse me while I [TS]

  continue to weep [TS]

Oh through a confluence of it's sort of [TS]

like a sitcom really the Scots the link [TS]

but wait that means I'll be alone for [TS]

the oh no because it was her and my [TS]

mother telling me that said she called [TS]

me and the first thing she said hello [TS]

mom and she said thing she said was [TS]

Christmas is cancelled which was in the [TS]

doctor who christmas rap haha oh very [TS]

  good [TS]

Wow and Glenn fleischmann from Seattle [TS]

who did you celebrate this holiday at [TS]

all or did you just get Chinese food [TS]

I i celebrated in every possible way [TS]

except involving a certain individual [TS]

  boring 2,010 years ago [TS]

Santa Claus yes that's right huh it's [TS]

because the party pressure is pretty [TS]

much my Christianity and I Jeff also [TS]

notice Jeff I i am and i should say that [TS]

I'm I'm speaking to you from the [TS]

sovereign state of Arizona where I spent [TS]

the favorite place with my favorite [TS]

  place [TS]

papers please idiots amusing scheduling [TS]

this podcast I kept trying to explain it [TS]

in terms of pacific time I'm actually on [TS]

mountain time so I kept having to you [TS]

know pretend to be a time zone i'm not [TS]

actually in because Arizona refuses to [TS]

daylight savings and it's a hotel right [TS]

there you go anyway doctor who doctor [TS]

who doctor whom I'm this is this is the [TS]

what the 5th 6 christmas special they've [TS]

done it once the particles in yet three [TS]

cities isn't a quarter results series [TS]

even after breakfast didn't have one [TS]

because the United regenerated right and [TS]

I was right about hates Christmas [TS]

Christmas asian 2005 david tennant began [TS]

so precise invasion seriously the mall [TS]

today the next Doctor to doctor who are [TS]

the Doctor Who proms if anybody saw any [TS]

of them were actually pretty awesome [TS]

yeah they were age of voyage of the [TS]

Damned yeah that's right the runaway [TS]

  bride [TS]

that's right that's the end for the end [TS]

of time part 10 you're ready i forgot [TS]

about this is not always like that [TS]

figures especially because the six then [TS]

yes this is the second set of questions [TS]

wikipedia says well as we had the weird [TS]

here where it was actually the end of [TS]

this special yeah I was a leap year it's [TS]

a lovely tradition though I think it's [TS]

barely IM it's not Christmas without [TS]

doctor who now for me I feel like oh [TS]

yeah that's the reason for the season [TS]

I spend spend Christmas with my cousins [TS]

and their two daughters and they're all [TS]

we finished you know escorted the rest [TS]

of the family out with each other to [TS]

doctor who touched you immediately into [TS]

the living room fired up the DVR [TS]

that's a beautiful thing it was a [TS]

  beautiful thing [TS]

it's funny how Christmas season after [TS]

being russell davies book writers tail [TS]

  it's clear that they're like they're [TS]

sort of freak at the same time they want [TS]

to do some really dark things such as as [TS]

a spoiler warning off this is all [TS]

spoiler ordinary alright yes yes was [TS]

officially fire off the Christmas [TS]

spoiler horn now the angry and very well [TS]

so that you know this episode [TS]

well 4003 people are going to be killed [TS]

so you know you start off with that and [TS]

so they clearly every year they worry [TS]

about like we want to do something [TS]

that's scary but a little pantomime and [TS]

that's really interesting and different [TS]

that you can do in this slightly [TS]

  slightly longer slightly different [TS]

format not always longer but now it's [TS]

longer used to be just a regular episode [TS]

like so it's kind of fascinating to see [TS]

how they told that line like all [TS]

families we watching this in England and [TS]

some other countries you get the step [TS]

the really super dark freaky dr. Ivo was [TS]

  right [TS]

although it's funny the the Christmas [TS]

format i mean it's always wrestle Davis [TS]

set this up and at and he said I want to [TS]

I want to be brought on christmas day I [TS]

want to be the whole family settling in [TS]

they've had some drinks they've had some [TS]

food now they're settling in to watch [TS]

what i thought was interesting is that [TS]

Steven Moffat this is his first [TS]

Christmas special and I thought it was [TS]

much more Christmassy having looked back [TS]

and some of the other oh yeah especially [TS]

and that's when i see you have a winter [TS]

was really like an excuse like Donna [TS]

yeah she's getting married on Christmas [TS]

  Eve sure that's right [TS]

Christmas ish who doesn't yeah why not [TS]

and then in the end of time yet [TS]

it happens to be Christmas sure why not [TS]

you know and so it didn't really have [TS]

anything even the Christmas invasion [TS]

I mean it had the robot Santa's at the [TS]

beginning and that's right and I was [TS]

like let's dispense with the Christmas [TS]

now until the very end so there's was am [TS]

so into the same had a bit [TS]

Christmas yeah a little bit little bit [TS]

yeah alien space Christmas we have one [TS]

of his favorite doctor who [TS]

so little queer monologues too he's got [TS]

a whole bit about how he's 900 years old [TS]

and blood what's really good my life I'm [TS]

a Time Lord from Gallifrey Gallifrey in [TS]

  the constellation of service [TS]

I'm 902 years old and I'm the one who's [TS]

going to save us all got a problem with [TS]

that no classic classic not just watch [TS]

that this another two years old and I [TS]

can kick and i can split and I can kick [TS]

so so very Christmasy this one and [TS]

obviously it's got that a bit of [TS]

dickinson it but there's just so much [TS]

  you so much [TS]

  christmas stuff there's a sleigh that's [TS]

being pulled by a shark that my which I [TS]

  don't [TS]

that's how I celebrate my Christmas [TS]

usually you guys did a tie in shacks did [TS]

they literally jump over the Sharks [TS]

episode was supposed to be a joke in [TS]

  there you know [TS]

nice i wonder what they were kind of [TS]

sticking it to people accusing them of [TS]

jumping the shark or something but it [TS]

seems very pointed in someone I thought [TS]

it would be ridiculous when i heard i [TS]

admit i actually heard that there was [TS]

going to be a flying shark and I thought [TS]

that was the most ridiculous thing I've [TS]

ever heard and yet I thought the little [TS]

fish around the light pole on the on the [TS]

outside whitwer it was kind of fun and [TS]

beautiful my kids thought it was really [TS]

cool and then the shark appears and it's [TS]

kind of frightening and and legitimately [TS]

scary yeah yeah yeah I give I give all [TS]

credit to Steven Moffat who once again [TS]

delivered I think fantastic episode [TS]

especially in terms of his dialogue [TS]

writing which it fantastic i mean you [TS]

know clearly he's been waiting for a [TS]

chance in some ways to cut loose with [TS]

his own you know doctor and I think he [TS]

feels matt smith's you know the 11th [TS]

doctor is very very hyperactive and very [TS]

kinetic in a lot of his roles and I [TS]

think you know moffatts writing style [TS]

  suits him perfectly [TS]

I mean if I point my favorite line from [TS]

this episode i think it would be [TS]

breaking of the psychic paper but you're [TS]

  responsible adult [TS]

I finally broke it so I too big the [TS]

other thing that was great too is I have [TS]

to say is i'm kinda with with them [TS]

Rory and Amelia up being really [TS]

relegated in this episode maybe sort of [TS]

happy I was like Matt Smith is there [TS]

toe-to-toe with michael gambon in some [TS]

  marvelous child in [TS]

teen or adult actors playing gap on a [TS]

different ages who are they were all [TS]

terrific about all the different people [TS]

playing that roller or barbless but [TS]

gamble on particularly just I just love [TS]

him to pieces and the screen was bigger [TS]

with the two of them on it and then they [TS]

cut to Rory Amelia and I was like I [TS]

would be so sorry if they got sucked [TS]

through a warm also place off this [TS]

season is done about Amy Pond come on I [TS]

  you know she's I'm not that i don't [TS]

think the actress has really proved [TS]

herself she doesn't scream as much you [TS]

know it's like I just don't feel she has [TS]

  the moxie [TS]

  I don't know I think I i like i like her [TS]

and I like those scenes I mean it-it's [TS]

hard to compete with michael gambon [TS]

right oh you mean you can't although it [TS]

i thought it was funny that we have this [TS]

instance where while Amy and Rory are [TS]

about to plunge to their death we have [TS]

this whole series of events that from [TS]

the doctor's perspective takes quite a [TS]

bit of time and its really like he's got [TS]

  two new companions [TS]

yeah enter the Christmas the onions and [TS]

they do have all these adventures in the [TS]

doctor Mary's Marilyn Monroe and pals [TS]

around with albert einstein and Frank [TS]

Sinatra and all these things happen and [TS]

and so that's sort of your companion set [TS]

for the episode and meanwhile i think [TS]

actually kind of hilariously Amy and [TS]

Rory are stuck in a Star Trek episode [TS]

oh god yelling anyone the fridge at the [TS]

uniforms were like dress that was also [TS]

resting area there are many and they [TS]

have the lens flares from the new star [TS]

trek movie too little hole right doc now [TS]

they're wearing their costumes because [TS]

they were obviously having some fun in [TS]

the honeymoon suite when I saw the [TS]

preview for this episode I was kind of [TS]

skeptical i was like we are they're [TS]

doing another time reset where [TS]

everybody's know like because that's the [TS]

after she's in very first episode so you [TS]

think that the outfit he's in at the [TS]

  very last step [TS]

yeah exactly i'm not gonna say also [TS]

another crashing spaceship for Christmas [TS]

yes the second time we can't get enough [TS]

  of the crashing spaceships [TS]

oh that was like Star Trek the you know [TS]

Star Trek was at five with a William [TS]

Shatner and don't don't mention started [TS]

fine but i wanted a semester and [TS]

  screaming hot rockin wrong [TS]

would you please just edit that out [TS]

think what does a Time Lord need with a [TS]

  spaceship [TS]

shocker e Scott are you a regular doctor [TS]

who watch her i am in fact a regular [TS]

doctor who watch her i must say that his [TS]

continuing flower planting of the [TS]

temporal prime directive is really well [TS]

distressing very distressing to use got [TS]

it is very distressing but the one thing [TS]

I mean this is it's funny because you [TS]

know obviously it in past Doctor Who's [TS]

there's been this talk about how time [TS]

can be changed and yet you in the Mafia [TS]

Tara clearly time can be changed time [TS]

you know can be rewritten as the line [TS]

keeps going at you know and i remember i [TS]

also remember that used to not be able [TS]

to touch yourself from a different point [TS]

in the timeline and yet possibly explode [TS]

oh yeah but you've got the little bitch [TS]

levitation effect or something at and [TS]

and yet you've got that we're all right [TS]

in season 1 episode which grows goes [TS]

back to see her father when she touches [TS]

herself as a child that's when the giant [TS]

  huh [TS]

you know I meters come out night doctor [TS]

who screwed up and get the pic in the [TS]

Big Bang episode the doctor touches you [TS]

know his future version of himself and [TS]

in this episode michael gambon touches [TS]

the child version of himself and it's [TS]

not a big deal because we're just [TS]

rewriting history you know I i actually [TS]

don't mind but I think it's kind of [TS]

funny that's like whatever let's just [TS]

change the past we don't get well I i [TS]

think i think that's kind of struggling [TS]

to me the same thing that you get from [TS]

the last episode of this season of [TS]

doctor who which is that you know with [TS]

Moffat taking over it's become less [TS]

science fiction and more Fairy Tail [TS]

right and you know a lot of this serves [TS]

to function as a yeah we don't really [TS]

need to worry about the water what is [TS]

she dying from why is she only got seven [TS]

days like nothing already to fix that [TS]

you know is there why is a las vegas pro [TS]

  is a nice [TS]

why is it Eric extension number is it a [TS]

six digit number on the front of the but [TS]

  i i i i questioned at me [TS]

knowledge is a six-digit number it says [TS]

years and days underneath if you look at [TS]

it very closely you go [TS]

it's why we have this podcast is just [TS]

like its I don't understand how it works [TS]

though because so you take a loan out [TS]

from the sky right and then so you say [TS]

okay well here's my sister so you can [TS]

hold her as collateral and you can [TS]

freezer but then when you unfreeze her [TS]

she's gonna die in seven days so if i [TS]

pay what I no no no he was no matter [TS]

what thats that in bed in the same sense [TS]

as kind of like yeah we'll give you this [TS]

  one she's sick already [TS]

I don't like what it was yeah that's the [TS]

idea there is that they said we're gonna [TS]

get the poor damaged goods as collateral [TS]

because she's gonna die anyway and she's [TS]

  probably presumably volunteered because [TS]

she knows she's gonna die anyway but [TS]

then why would all of the the time [TS]

frizzy pod things have countdowns on [TS]

  them [TS]

it doesn't make any sense to me it [TS]

doesn't make any sense alright I don't [TS]

need to find areas of pairing else got [TS]

it's the Somme it's the same having just [TS]

watch the Christmas invasion to get it's [TS]

the same reason why there's a button on [TS]

the outside of the spaceship and the [TS]

aliens the Christmas invasion that can [TS]

be hit by an orange chemical weapons a [TS]

tiny part of the outside of the [TS]

spaceship so that the guy falls off and [TS]

i just that just makes sense about your [TS]

awesomeness and I don't even want to see [TS]

why are the people on this planet [TS]

frightened of little fish that can swim [TS]

through fog modern p and that can be [TS]

never seen have they never seen a bow [TS]

tie before the penthouse sequence when [TS]

he's growing up and he slowly adopting [TS]

the doctors fashion statement is the [TS]

most adorable thing just complete side [TS]

note and he had an incredible growth [TS]

  spurt [TS]

yes anyone still probably it is I don't [TS]

know what's what I think it was [TS]

  beautiful this is [TS]

ll go back to the matter on this with a [TS]

big picture was I i found myself crying [TS]

number of times this thing which i do it [TS]

for christmas specials especially our [TS]

tearjerkers but they're just I mean [TS]

cambon he presented himself very [TS]

effectively as somebody who just did not [TS]

and he really the point where he says I [TS]

  just don't care [TS]

I'm not like you and you know and he [TS]

sells it like he's always going to die [TS]

and it is completely abstract and he [TS]

doesn't care i'm gonna die lonely cold [TS]

and alone yet what else we all do that [TS]

you know what what else do you have in [TS]

your cabinet of whores instead what that [TS]

he brings them is this sort of [TS]

recognition himself embracing himself he [TS]

gets the pullback from the events he [TS]

gets to embrace this better self it's [TS]

very lovely is not a damning line where [TS]

he says you know we asked all you're [TS]

gonna show me the future now he says no [TS]

I i just did only possible but only [TS]

helping I thought I thought that whole i [TS]

  agree i like I thought Gamboa's [TS]

  performance was pretty awesome [TS]

I really liked as that twist became an [TS]

apparent what he was doing good that the [TS]

doctor was going back and basically [TS]

rewriting his past because you know you [TS]

start out and it's very clearly like [TS]

this is you know we know it's called a [TS]

christmas carol is a christmas carol [TS]

call out right you know that starts with [TS]

him being all grumpy and Scrooge like [TS]

and denying the the poor family the [TS]

chance to see their you know relative on [TS]

christmas eve and you think I was gonna [TS]

be predicted was going to turn them [TS]

around can be happy but the way in which [TS]

they did it was different and often [TS]

novel enough to keep me guessing right [TS]

because you know i love moment you [TS]

realize he's going back in time and [TS]

changing everything is kind and I love [TS]

that it's a great cameras moment to [TS]

where it shows up on the video recording [TS]

just classic and bittersweet because he [TS]

falls in love with a woman who he knows [TS]

is going to die the next time he sees [TS]

her know there's definitely some [TS]

edginess to it that is the things that [TS]

you know keep the parents entertained [TS]

even though while the kids are waiting [TS]

for the shark to come back and I i will [TS]

say this to this is the first time that [TS]

I watched an episode of Doctor Who that [TS]

I'd never seen before with my kids and [TS]

we're gonna both my kids watch it with [TS]

us and my son was you know tuning in and [TS]

  out [TS]

although he was fascinated by the shark [TS]

my doctor my daughter was watching [TS]

pretty much the whole thing and was a i [TS]

think i think pretty into it so it was a [TS]

it was kind of a cool family thing to be [TS]

able to watch it on you know it's seven [TS]

o'clock on on Christmas night when was [TS]

avoiding he walks she had a great reason [TS]

to watch that this evening [TS]

yes you want everything he walks other [TS]

stationary under siege and pasadena [TS]

their helicopters overhead he walks and [TS]

chip Carey who is that where he walks [TS]

retired to pasadena Aaron think Jim [TS]

Carrey how you felt so I mean I [TS]

definitely everybody seems to be pretty [TS]

positive about this episode I i [TS]

definitely thought it was great [TS]

what is called once other than my [TS]

  misgivings about the economic [TS]

underpinnings of the squirrel no no you [TS]

forget they're tying into the something [TS]

something that made it official to cool [TS]

them to freeze them down there remember [TS]

the father of the oddly Frogley so with [TS]

that takes away the fog less traumatic [TS]

stress got that even got rolls the Frog [TS]

  Lake [TS]

control the planet no he throws the [TS]

clouds apparently controls the plan yes [TS]

yes I'm really curious on the side note [TS]

why everybody was wearing goggles other [TS]

than it's just make it somewhat Stevens [TS]

community foggy and Doctor Who and dr. [TS]

Seuss not dr. Scott's they have those [TS]

hats that were like so yes those are the [TS]

places will attack your eyes they go for [TS]

the eyes and my first thought right [TS]

I you know so and I have to ask are [TS]

there Zeppelin some answers no but there [TS]

are seven like flying sharks hereafter [TS]

wheels and Zeppelin like flying [TS]

spaceships to falling Wales why not [TS]

I didn't like the the kind of Peter Pan [TS]

beeping sonic screwdriver in the shark [TS]

  though [TS]

oh I didn't understand what I'm going [TS]

sorry worried did he get it out don't [TS]

know he said he was gonna just replace [TS]

it anyway so make them give it to [TS]

Michael Gambon right but what I forget [TS]

which is happening and the sharp as the [TS]

  other half [TS]

what's wonderful is I didn't catch the [TS]

crocodile reference you're totally right [TS]

your you are right i just excellent i [TS]

just saw Peter Pan 360 a few days ago [TS]

and my son was enthralled by the ticket [TS]

aki crocodile and you're absolutely [TS]

right that is that is the reference [TS]

  there so there [TS]

this is loaded with references this [TS]

let's discuss this with your points at [TS]

which we don't which we don't [TS]

  that's a dog that's what i thought would [TS]

win every time if we gave that point at [TS]

structural analysis really the best [TS]

Christmas after all we see and that's [TS]

part of redemption is part of this [TS]

podcast now encompass the theme [TS]

well personally I was a great loss he [TS]

also the promos for the next season oh [TS]

yeah you know I haven't had a chance to [TS]

watch them back to prove her like [TS]

  although I will [TS]

there's a scene with mashup has a beard [TS]

and longer hair be a highlight of [TS]

  prisoners change [TS]

yeah yeah there's always there filming [TS]

there filming in the in the US for the [TS]

first time next season so [TS]

oh yeah how was I yeah yeah we'll steps [TS]

in that steps you're cool [TS]

yeah second in utah they shot a lot of [TS]

promise for BBC america are actually not [TS]

while they were out there today we know [TS]

how many episodes they're shooting in [TS]

Utah because it seems like a long way [TS]

to go in there really pumping it up it's [TS]

a two-part episode they shot in utah for [TS]

like three days i think and they shot [TS]

and in the valley of the gods for a day [TS]

and then they shot at Lake Powell where [TS]

I've actually been been around Page [TS]

Arizona just north of there across the [TS]

Utah border and that's where a lot of [TS]

those promos were where he sort of got a [TS]

lake in the background and that's all [TS]

for the season-opening to partner we're [TS]

there again spoiler horn sorry but [TS]

there's a it's a USA this is all sort of [TS]

been released as promotional material [TS]

it's set at least in part in the US and [TS]

that's why they shot a bunch of stuff [TS]

out and in Utah because you can't really [TS]

replicate that scenery and I think BBC [TS]

america actually funded some of that BBC [TS]

america is really has really gotten [TS]

behind doctor who with this I've noticed [TS]

on TV critics got screener editions of [TS]

this episode and iOS Android and San [TS]

Francisco Chronicle had a piece on it [TS]

  two days ago [TS]

well ready with the river you know if [TS]

you're gonna broadcast in the u.s. [TS]

obviously good you and CNN story about [TS]

it said that they're committed to airing [TS]

the show on the day same day with the UK [TS]

with the noose is really now that's nice [TS]

all I mean they'll cut down on I mean I [TS]

you know arguably will cut down on the [TS]

  piracy from some people [TS]

oh well I think about which is pretty [TS]

big but I also i might i find it amusing [TS]

that and this is sort of slightly [TS]

tangential but also can't Torchwood is [TS]

going to the US next season though not [TS]

alone not in the BBC america vain i [TS]

think because they made a deal with star [TS]

yes and it will take all this act again [TS]

probably not Torchwood is not visiting [TS]

Torchwood is being shot in the bu living [TS]

in the United States apparently flap 29 [TS]

years if everybody has died [TS]

yeah i was very much it's an anchor show [TS]

you can see why don't you have your [TS]

dinner table to fit in just fucking yeah [TS]

that's this is true so so they showed [TS]

alex kingston the previews I i love her [TS]

as an actress I guess this is my problem [TS]

carrying Gilliam is she is a young and [TS]

callow woman vs the mature strong [TS]

  confidence knowledgeable alex king [TS]

static gasps don't you know man i'm [TS]

gonna take that experience there's room [TS]

for both men and I actually kind of like [TS]

it when they're playing off each other [TS]

you have both of them in a room together [TS]

and it's all of a sudden very very [TS]

interesting and very good i think they [TS]

  have [TS]

I think all three of them especially [TS]

when they have very good chemistry [TS]

  Rory's I'm what's attached to but I [TS]

think Amy and the doctor certainly have [TS]

very good rapport a while you remember [TS]

the line elisabeth sladen straight line [TS]

as Mary Jane Mary Jane out already [TS]

sarah-jane in the episode with the a [TS]

schoolroom you know the one I'm talking [TS]

about what would scooby had school [TS]

reunion thank you and she says you know [TS]

the keto you keep the younger and they [TS]

keep getting younger something like that [TS]

you know the doctor about his companions [TS]

after seeing Billy and it's like yeah [TS]

they sort of do although I guess Karen [TS]

Gillan's technically probably older than [TS]

Billy was all times is the least this [TS]

river song right and I mean that that's [TS]

interesting about throwing her in the [TS]

mix although i want all having seen the [TS]

Big Bang most of it before they they [TS]

aired that right before this episode on [TS]

BBC america I i was struck by the rep [TS]

the rapport between Karen Gillan but [TS]

will the scene where they take his feds [TS]

right i mean yeah they're sensing and [TS]

then at the end when when you will [TS]

that's right the beginning of that scene [TS]

she just Amy and the centurian and [TS]

they're like yeah he's with us that's [TS]

okay but it's yeah that whole scene is [TS]

really nice with NN a shootout the feds [TS]

because it's got to be stopped i do a [TS]

podcast that it's cool i guess i guess [TS]

you could I love the explanation for the [TS]

boat I also i can't remember the exact [TS]

when they're not and he's I wear it and [TS]

nobody care and eyewear and I don't care [TS]

what people think or something like that [TS]

and that's why it's cool and it's the [TS]

best the best to that well I mean that's [TS]

the definitely that's the definition of [TS]

  cool right [TS]

you know not caring doing your own thing [TS]

then we're all really cool [TS]

uh yeah true because we had got a [TS]

cricket sound here somewhere that I have [TS]

a trick here Frank in Arizona his name's [TS]

Jimmy haha that's another podcast so so [TS]

did you guys have any other sort of a [TS]

geeky Christmas things today that you [TS]

would like to admit to in addition to [TS]

what plan your entire day around [TS]

watching Doctor Who entire he's down in [TS]

a minute and watching and then talking [TS]

about dr. besides the preponderance of [TS]

electronic gadgets in our family's house [TS]

i think we had at least for ipads and [TS]

half-a-dozen iphones at least my host he [TS]

might mind generous cousins who are host [TS]

we all were wearing geeky t-shirts for [TS]

the day so my cousin was wearing a [TS]

t-shirt from thinkgeek with a guy with [TS]

astronaut dragging his little toys [TS]

spaceship away because he's a science [TS]

geek and he said about the shuttle [TS]

program being discontinued my uh one of [TS]

my cousin's the daughters was wearing a [TS]

exterminate Dalek shirt that I gave her [TS]

for Christmas which was appropriate and [TS]

then the other her sister was wearing a [TS]

  sunnyvale high school [TS]

Oh insurance Sunnydale sorry Sunnydale [TS]

  high school [TS]

nice which has fangs and fire coming out [TS]

of it because sunnyvale high school is [TS]

just that's just an actual high school [TS]

for much more boring and i'm wearing a [TS]

it's a trap shirt so we have is that [TS]

  from a movie it's a trap [TS]

ya never know maybe the anybody's ever [TS]

heard of its kind of accident i think [TS]

access so punny keeps in this household [TS]

  for Christmas [TS]

alright i was sadly the loan geek this [TS]

year because my parents my mother who is [TS]

my geek repartee she was often the [TS]

kitchen doing work and my sister and my [TS]

father are very unattended I was kind of [TS]

sitting in the living room and watching [TS]

star wars and then waiting for dr. food [TS]

download zip it was it was it was very [TS]

very sad Christmas for the geek [TS]

household here but that's all right [TS]

Scott how did you spend your spend your [TS]

day I was also right so that I was I was [TS]

I was alone geek because I was all alone [TS]

but i did spend a good portion of my [TS]

time I gave my mother a kindle for [TS]

Christmas so I she apparently does not [TS]

know how to use amazon that huh [TS]

you have every reason every now you have [TS]

to start spreading them what I was gonna [TS]

ask scott is did you get her a new [TS]

Wonder did you get her one from the [TS]

collection the collection is a historic [TS]

monument and cannot be tampered with [TS]

each of the hundreds of kindle has no [TS]

name and personality if they dragged the [TS]

day they were born a stranger not only [TS]

will tag actually the way Scott work for [TS]

the readers as he buys them and only [TS]

loads one book on them truth and again [TS]

another and ultimate shell ratio [TS]

okay you're not an ebooks reader exactly [TS]

so I I helped my mother set up her [TS]

candle which was was kept little trying [TS]

but far away from because she had that [TS]

the way it worked was that you went to [TS]

the abdomen to amazon.com and looked at [TS]

the book that you wanted on amazon and [TS]

it would magically appear on your kindle [TS]

without you doing anything so i had to [TS]

explain to her it was a little you have [TS]

to do a little more than that just [TS]

looking at that's actually where that's [TS]

how Google ebooks work so it actually is [TS]

going to confuse people make sure you [TS]

can work that way i should say you just [TS]

look at it and it depends magically [TS]

appear to serialize what if you just [TS]

look at a book on your shelf does it [TS]

appear on your kindle does that work [TS]

Scott Academy think the confusion is [TS]

that she's thinking not about you [TS]

probably got her the kid with Wi-Fi and [TS]

she's thinking of the kindle with Wi-Fi [TS]

  + telepathy [TS]

oh I'm cheap so i didn't spring for that [TS]

one yeah it's very only costs seven [TS]

thousand dollars school will be an old [TS]

  model next year anyway [TS]

oh you have to hammer the antenna into [TS]

the head that's painful part was a [TS]

  sidekick ii paper huh [TS]

she wanted their little doctor foo what [TS]

  about You Glenn [TS]

well I spend this Christmas I do every [TS]

Christmas watching the tron 92 christmas [TS]

special course over and over it Shay [TS]

  wow I haven't actually haven't watched [TS]

that yet although i've been told by [TS]

Steve lots are very own Steve let's that [TS]

the the really right thing to do is to [TS]

watch the star wars holiday special with [TS]

the rifftrax track on top of it i've [TS]

  been told that to [TS]

yes no I was in a house full of [TS]

non-geeks so I was forced to suppress I [TS]

had to sneak out the ipad while the [TS]

children were occupied to watch Doctor [TS]

Who ah you got in have got indoctrinate [TS]

your kids into doctor who might my son [TS]

  he would he [TS]

whenever he was passing by he'll be like [TS]

God the blue box the blue box like my [TS]

older son ben is a lovely lovely fellow [TS]

and is currently obsessed by geography [TS]

at the age of six you can tell you where [TS]

I'd like adjoining states on the map and [TS]

things like that but he is very [TS]

sensitive lad and we try to show me your [TS]

  ago [TS]

winnie the pooh and the part [TS]

the bees made him cry so I think doctor [TS]

who is a little further his future like [TS]

20 to 30 years so I'm really going to [TS]

thank you for this podcast at some point [TS]

we're going to do that let you know to [TS]

go to the fuel and a doctor who makes [TS]

you cry Glenn so oh well I'm gonna go [TS]

and race on sat weeks is me alex it runs [TS]

  in the family [TS]

  you're a weepy family and there's [TS]

nothing wrong with me cry now you seen [TS]

the ghost of Christmas future of your [TS]

spirits and let's not be changed [TS]

yeah I i showed my kids a doctor who [TS]

episode of like a year ago and that [TS]

night my son came out and said it the I [TS]

can't even remember which monster it was [TS]

but he's always like that monster is not [TS]

going to come this is like no notice [TS]

that it's not going to cover my wife [TS]

glared at me he's like what I see [TS]

see this is what happens when you show [TS]

kids scary things in the capital there's [TS]

supposed to be scared they like it [TS]

you can't be a kid and not be afraid of [TS]

something come on let's go to NW w go [TS]

back to eventually gonna turn my memory [TS]

gold collection never fade the the [TS]

counter tenor is going to sing now know [TS]

the face spiders by the way we're home [TS]

yeah absolutely it's like oh no are [TS]

there other face butters in this closet [TS]

no no that gun to your head there in the [TS]

mattress now you need to have fears in [TS]

  order to overcome them [TS]

so apparently this episode was is [TS]

another example uh I think the third [TS]

example of Steven Moffat rifling through [TS]

a story that he wrote when doctor who [TS]

was off the air a short story of pros [TS]

story about a Doctor Who story though [TS]

previously he he used a story as the [TS]

basis for blink where he wrote a story [TS]

about Sally Sparrow who was a younger [TS]

girl then but she was getting messages [TS]

in her wallpaper from the doctor from [TS]

the past telling her what to do in the [TS]

future so that he could get his target [TS]

bag and then there's another story he [TS]

  wrote called continuity errors [TS]

apparently he's rifled through twice now [TS]

because it was about a library with that [TS]

all the books in the world and all of [TS]

that and we know what happened there but [TS]

the other point was that there was this [TS]

librarian who was very angry and [TS]

wouldn't give him this book that he [TS]

needed to save a lot of people and he [TS]

kept going back and changing things in [TS]

her past in order to get her to be more [TS]

  likely to let him [TS]

have the book and so that that is [TS]

apparently the basis for this episode [TS]

well well done because I thought it was [TS]

really funny and interesting way to [TS]

approach a christmas carol kind of thing [TS]

but it is interesting but he is [TS]

shameless in taking his old ideas from [TS]

these things that you know don't really [TS]

I don't really count nobody really read [TS]

just the hardcore fans and saying that's [TS]

a good idea i'm going to use that idea i [TS]

got it's done it was think wrinkle in [TS]

time the third the second sequel to [TS]

  wrinkle in time [TS]

what is that quality swiftly tilting [TS]

  planet [TS]

yes you remember that he goes Charles [TS]

Charles what's-his-face goes back in [TS]

time and changes things in prehistory in [TS]

order to change the behavior of a [TS]

dictator in the current day was gonna [TS]

blow up the world a madman [TS]

huh no i don't remember I'm have been [TS]

reading that book little bit that's that [TS]

didn't know that many waters many waters [TS]

is going after that because that's also [TS]

prehistory right there so yeah there's [TS]

the the second wrinkle in time when [TS]

after a long time is what's wrong with [TS]

the midi-chlorians i'm sorry the [TS]

mitochondria I've got your party that's [TS]

very similar wow audiences every one of [TS]

our podcast have star wars in it but yes [TS]

we're going to actually obligated but [TS]

this this is the episode with star trek [TS]

  in it [TS]

this is dr. this ass you talk about the [TS]

writers tail unit Russell Davis really [TS]

wanted to do first you wanted to do a [TS]

crossover with enterprise which is that [TS]

would have free community and how [TS]

completely insane with deadlines he was [TS]

because he'd see what kind of plot of [TS]

the whole thing out before and then also [TS]

harry potter crossover y JK Rowling [TS]

appears yourself and the doctor to be [TS]

involved was like oh I can she act like [TS]

  I don't know she's a writer should [TS]

probably define like Brussels get some [TS]

sleep please yes yes and you [TS]

you know it's funny I can kind of see [TS]

what he's going forward that like you [TS]

know especially in terms of trying to [TS]

box arrives the series which is so [TS]

pretty eccentric but also the idea that [TS]

like I don't know kinda reminds me of [TS]

the Stephen King darktower idea like all [TS]

the stories are connected in some way [TS]

right so he also then talked about doing [TS]

a which I think ended up being planted [TS]

the dead one of the specials he wanted [TS]

to do a star trek episode basically [TS]

where there would be a spaceship that [TS]

would be very Star Trek like and and he [TS]

never got around to it but it's kind of [TS]

funny that the here Steven Moffat who is [TS]

I believe in a valid Star Trek fan and [TS]

he doesn't talk about that a lot because [TS]

he's the Doctor Who showrunner but i [TS]

believe he was a huge Star Trek fan and [TS]

he's stuck in all these very funny [TS]

  references it's a galaxy-class ship [TS]

that's gonna crash and it's got the star [TS]

trek JJ Abrams lens flares on the bridge [TS]

and it's got the the guy with the funny [TS]

eyepiece who's the navigator who is the [TS]

your Geordi LaForge kinda guess it's [TS]

just you know I and it is really [TS]

  important [TS]

it's just funny and when the flavor yeah [TS]

yeah it's just i mean i'm reading the [TS]

comic book just since this is the [TS]

incomparable I can do this [TS]

the comic-book invincible which is I a [TS]

pretty good superhero comic book by [TS]

Robert Kirkman the guy does the walking [TS]

dead and they've got this recurring set [TS]

of characters in a very serious [TS]

storyline where people are getting kind [TS]

of torn to bits and killed and horribly [TS]

wounded and it's the spaceship that is [TS]

just a joke of the enterprise from Star [TS]

Trek The Next Generation and there's a [TS]

bald captain and a and a robot crewmen [TS]

and they're all just kind of slightly [TS]

off-kilter from Star Trek but it's very [TS]

obvious that that's the reference and I [TS]

don't know I i I'm amused by that that [TS]

is still a reference that can be made [TS]

all this time later that it's really got [TS]

you know enough that they're like yeah [TS]

let's make that reference with everybody [TS]

knows star trek we can do that and star [TS]

trek is far superior to start wars so it [TS]

makes our that's where was she supposed [TS]

to have a quick podcasts we make [TS]

predictions for next christmas is next [TS]

Christmas is episode gosh board [TS]

what would you guess Glenn what would [TS]

you like to see me in the colin as the [TS]

guest star that's what i did with [TS]

  messages using out [TS]

I don't care what he does probably he's [TS]

  Shakespeare or Shakespeare's [TS]

  great-grandchild [TS]

I don't care what it is but in mcallen [TS]

or maybe old magnetic substances with [TS]

his mind that would also be okay clearly [TS]

patrick stewart Treasury Stewart yell [TS]

yeah you have an account you have to [TS]

have Patrick story with Natalie other [TS]

sheets again we are actually making the [TS]

x-men but because they're sure [TS]

by the way did you notice the BBC [TS]

  previews for next year [TS]

christopher eccleston has his own series [TS]

dick attendant has his own series very [TS]

  gritty looking difficult thing [TS]

as in which they're threatening people [TS]

are being threatened in the preview so [TS]

will will certainly make of three [TS]

doctors show you know father very gritty [TS]

characters against matt smith at the end [TS]

of the year i would like to see the [TS]

debut first Doctor Who Hanukkah episode [TS]

haha eight crazy nights now way they use [TS]

that title for something that would be [TS]

that would be interesting actually I i [TS]

think that we didn't have any series you [TS]

did a miniseries kind of like children [TS]

reverse for Torchwood except you did for [TS]

doctor who and you did it one night of [TS]

Hanukkah line minute episodes over the [TS]

country look do a job yet [TS]

network executives never know the eight [TS]

episodes we quite as good as you got hit [TS]

on the title it would be called doctor [TS]

who and the dreidel of doom [TS]

oh that's sort of the final episode [TS]

that's really big spinning dreidel space [TS]

from Daleks much comics not really don't [TS]

need all right don't you no matter how [TS]

about playing mr. i dono pls pls leave [TS]

the chinese restaurant now look I'm just [TS]

picturing Daleks with them now because [TS]

on their head all crying oh wow two sets [TS]

  so wrong [TS]

that's so wrong Merry Christmas [TS]

  everybody [TS]

oh that's right Hanukkah Happy Hanukkah [TS]

falls over Christmas next year dan I [TS]

didn't know that because the schism in [TS]

the space-time continuum and that is the [TS]

point and there you have it is right [TS]

wow this is interesting also I this is [TS]

the first Doctor Who in i think since [TS]

the first doctor who christmas special [TS]

that has had regular companions in it [TS]

Oh as a excellent point strip which [TS]

happens I wasn't a companion at that [TS]

point the russell davis series they [TS]

tended other than the two years with [TS]

Rose they tended to cycle through new [TS]

companions every season and you know who [TS]

did the companions from last season are [TS]

coming back for next season so it's a [TS]

little stability at least I mean until [TS]

presumably they'll completely wreck by [TS]

the time this season is over but right [TS]

now they got them intact and it was kind [TS]

of nice to see them even though I I to [TS]

glens pointed with I kind of appreciated [TS]

that they were on the side and it wasn't [TS]

really about them they were just sort of [TS]

present but not operate they were the [TS]

people they were important and 900 years [TS]

have you ever met anyone who wasn't [TS]

  important [TS]

that's true i mean they were worried [TS]

about you want me the diameter of the [TS]

doctor doesn't get involved right you [TS]

know you he only comes to save them [TS]

really well i guess i actually was a [TS]

little disappointed when he said I you [TS]

know I can't walk on there was a quick [TS]

throw a line I can't lock onto the ship [TS]

because what i wanted to say was I [TS]

couldn't get all of them off in time [TS]

that's what i want to have to say [TS]

because he you know I would like to just [TS]

say yes well of course I could save [TS]

those two I could just move my TARDIS up [TS]

there and get them but there are 4,000 [TS]

people on that ship and I can't get them [TS]

all off and i'm here to save all of them [TS]

not not two of them and he didn't do [TS]

  that [TS]

he just said I can't walk on there's [TS]

nothing to be Jason Jason that's what he [TS]

  meant [TS]

oh sure in my fantasy action later I [TS]

will yes where I tell the stories of of [TS]

the doctor and sardick and the girl who [TS]

was frozen and thought out every year [TS]

their adventures on Christmas Eve that's [TS]

37 others so that in there I'm workin on [TS]

fanfiction of the 4,000 people that were [TS]

  on the scholarship [TS]

thank you very talented singers sing [TS]

extract no actually not talented fingers [TS]

because if they were as good a singer as [TS]

the girl who was frozen [TS]

they were going to shift they wouldn't [TS]

hear the break the better singing for [TS]

  their lives [TS]

come on the fact she have destroyed [TS]

their starship what I don't matter their [TS]

feet there was maybe said she got a nice [TS]

touch though I will say that was [TS]

Carmine's got that terrible episode of [TS]

Star Trek where they have to feed the [TS]

big limb like Remora thing that sucks on [TS]

  the enterprise [TS]

oh that was great but it's our the milk [TS]

love that one terrible default alchemist [TS]

hyper involved a hyper deck thingamabob [TS]

  you know [TS]

ya see ya / star wars holiday special [TS]

the hollow shed our three equals really [TS]

helping wrong with celebrating some life [TS]

  day [TS]

okay yeah yeah is this another one of [TS]

those episodes of the house shed where [TS]

people become real again okay [TS]

don't make me get siracusa here [TS]

somewhere else huh i'm sure you could [TS]

pull them out of iraq now we're good [TS]

we're beating up beating up on Dan now [TS]

while he can't defend himself because [TS]

he's a lot i can deflect here is going [TS]

on this podcast what know this is all [TS]

just a recording of campus is outrageous [TS]

so this is Robo dad for Dan so any other [TS]

final one final thoughts of how about [TS]

that for a transition that we might be [TS]

wrapped canvas that is emergency podcast [TS]

up any other final thoughts about this [TS]

the Christmas episode that you'd like to [TS]

  share [TS]

I really kinda hoped that a that the [TS]

whole changing somebody's past then gets [TS]

really occurred in series six because i [TS]

would like to see it go horribly wrong [TS]

maybe that's just morbid but I mean that [TS]

would be because we didn't really get a [TS]

chance to play with it in this episode [TS]

because it was very kind of upbeat but [TS]

he revisited later on what he tries to [TS]

do it again to fix something and then it [TS]

horribly horribly backfires it could be [TS]

well I think just plays into the whole [TS]

thread of what he learned last season in [TS]

that you know at a certain point his [TS]

worst enemy is himself is your time lord [TS]

victorious again a little bit not quite [TS]

but it could go that direction [TS]

yeah actually run homer simpson changing [TS]

the past no take that butterfly star who [TS]

and Homer Simpson have a lot of [TS]

similarities exuberant hey did you [TS]

notice that i'm at one point Matt Smith [TS]

is basically wearing Tom Baker scarf [TS]

yes I was wondering the prospects yeah I [TS]

had to stop that and I was wait a second [TS]

  that's i I just I mean it's for probably [TS]

in the wardrobe somewhere in the TARDIS [TS]

right as sure as affecting as the whole [TS]

episode was i love the fact that Steven [TS]

Moffat being a very skilled comedy [TS]

  writer had no problem [TS]

sliding in just a huge amount of jokes [TS]

amid the more serious kind of material i [TS]

thought that was a really nice mixture [TS]

because he kept it a little bit lighter [TS]

while not you know making it ridiculous [TS]

this was one of these genuine like [TS]

funniest I think episodes in the last [TS]

several seasons even perhaps just in the [TS]

terms of I feel like even just in terms [TS]

of the writing and that equips and stuff [TS]

like that workers at some point I felt [TS]

like well that's funny but it's not [TS]

  necessarily laugh-out-loud funny i don't [TS]

know i found myself laughing a lot more [TS]

this episode also would like to thank [TS]

you David also know i was saying it's [TS]

like the larger worry you just let Matt [TS]

Smith talked and the more Matt Smith [TS]

talks the funnier the jet in general the [TS]

episode of this is the deal with like [TS]

some of the episodes because Martin so [TS]

extensively four seasons one through [TS]

four you can just picture david tennant [TS]

doing the same lines this is one you [TS]

can't see David Tennant doing this is [TS]

matt smith doctor who and fully is like [TS]

the larger that's true i was thinking [TS]

that david tennant at the end of the [TS]

david tennant doctor who he was kind of [TS]

crazy but bad crazy and Matt Smith's [TS]

doctor who is crazy but you know good [TS]

crazy like this one moment in his [TS]

circles crazy exactly i like when he was [TS]

like oh the knobby thing has drawn me [TS]

here and it has my name written all over [TS]

it well not really but if you give me a [TS]

crayon and sometime it will how the the [TS]

it's interesting you know Steven Moffat [TS]

ride for a while as as revealed in the [TS]

writers tail i think actually to get [TS]

David Tennant to come back and I believe [TS]

several of the episodes for the four [TS]

last season were originally written with [TS]

the idea that it might be David Tennant [TS]

by and it and you did get the sense i [TS]

think especially early on that that this [TS]

could be David Tennant and it's not but [TS]

if you could see how they could play it [TS]

that way i'm not i do think you're right [TS]

that this is a full-fledged this is an [TS]

episode written not just knowing that [TS]

it's matt smith but having seen a year [TS]

of matt smith and knowing what he's good [TS]

at which is actually gets me excited for [TS]

next year that they've got your under [TS]

their belt if you point towards I think [TS]

the two episodes and these from the [TS]

first season of the larger as everyone [TS]

has said which I agree and also the [TS]

eleventh hour which I think was the [TS]

other that the whole scene with the food [TS]

at the beginning that one is a great [TS]

example of who the 11th doctor is which [TS]

is just kind of kind of crazy Scott said [TS]

good crazy good yet these are he's our [TS]

concentration that isn't fish sticks and [TS]

putting that's right this time putting [TS]

very good Americanizing by the way Scott [TS]

fish fingers and custard which doesnt we [TS]

we won the Revolutionary War and let's [TS]

not look at what they say he's got not [TS]

next season didn't don't to the victors [TS]

  go new jersey [TS]

oh I can see the new jersey from my [TS]

  house [TS]

thanks Sarah Palin highway version to [TS]

  the wrong territory [TS]

what spot gases over i think maybe it is [TS]

well so thank you all for coming out on [TS]

this out into the cold world of the [TS]

podcast I don't really understand what [TS]

  that means [TS]

Glenn pointed out quite rightly that one [TS]

of the questions that must be asked is [TS]

uh is what are you drinking [TS]

essentially if you'll indulge me for a [TS]

second while I do this let's see how [TS]
