The Incomparable

8: Top Men

00:00:00   that is Jango Fett minus boba fett but [TS]

00:00:04   that's adding reasonable people can [TS]

00:00:05   reasonably disagree on that there's a [TS]

00:00:07   generational thing that right here's [TS]

00:00:09   angle that is like what if we took Boba [TS]

00:00:10   Fett and made him just even more awesome [TS]

00:00:13   by expanding his character and of course [TS]

00:00:15   it's my son with Jango Fett for [TS]

00:00:17   Halloween last year his argument is vice [TS]

00:00:20   city has two pounds and are coming out [TS]

00:00:23   that really would you rather have two [TS]

00:00:24   guns but I think they're kind of not [TS]

00:00:26   looking at guns or one really [TS]

00:00:27   cool-looking i'm more of a one cool [TS]

00:00:29   looking down the type guy like you know [TS]

00:00:32   just wait [TS]

00:00:34   the incomparable Todd test at this [TS]

00:00:39   little date October 2010 with Jason's [TS]

00:00:43   now and marlin and special guest john [TS]

00:00:47   you know the funny thing is I i asked [TS]

00:00:56   you guys here today to talk about [TS]

00:00:58   raiders of the lost ark and while we [TS]

00:01:02   were waiting to start recording [TS]

00:01:04   John was pointing out that his son is [TS]

00:01:06   watching The Last Crusade downstairs as [TS]

00:01:09   we speak which i would put second and [TS]

00:01:11   then the list perhaps but really ok [TS]

00:01:13   that's me [TS]

00:01:14   I know you love that one I actually [TS]

00:01:15   thought you might have put it first but [TS]

00:01:16   you put at second base it's a close one [TS]

00:01:18   but i think you know the Raiders is [TS]

00:01:20   probably the superior technically [TS]

00:01:22   superior of the film's I i love Raiders [TS]

00:01:25   I was really sad when it came out on DVD [TS]

00:01:27   and they wanted you to force you to buy [TS]

00:01:29   all three movies together because to me [TS]

00:01:32   raiders is just so much better than the [TS]

00:01:35   other two and I like I think the third [TS]

00:01:37   1i think i think last crusade is is good [TS]

00:01:40   but Raiders there's something maybe [TS]

00:01:42   there's something about it I don't know [TS]

00:01:43   every time I go back and try to look at [TS]

00:01:45   them though I still think that that the [TS]

00:01:47   first one is the best one [TS]

00:01:48   my son is six and he he got on a big [TS]

00:01:51   Indiana Jones kick [TS]

00:01:53   I don't know about two years ago years [TS]

00:01:55   ago whenever we first started watching a [TS]

00:01:56   man and bring up probably honestly you [TS]

00:01:59   know that the book of good parenting [TS]

00:02:00   probably too young to be watching them [TS]

00:02:02   but and I watch them a lot when I was [TS]

00:02:04   younger too but having watched them [TS]

00:02:06   again and many many times and just even [TS]

00:02:09   just stop thru as mosis by having a kid [TS]

00:02:11   on Saturday afternoon watching it again [TS]

00:02:14   and again and again just in you know i'm [TS]

00:02:15   not even watching it with them every [TS]

00:02:17   time but I've seen them a lot recently [TS]

00:02:19   all of them and it just it it's just one [TS]

00:02:21   of those things were my mile long time [TS]

00:02:23   feeling it just has reiterated every [TS]

00:02:25   time the Raiders to me it stands apart [TS]

00:02:27   it's not even it's not that did the [TS]

00:02:29   other ones aren't good but they're not [TS]

00:02:31   even the same type of movie because I [TS]

00:02:33   think all the ones after i think the [TS]

00:02:34   other three temple of doom and [TS]

00:02:36   definitely Last Crusade and and that the [TS]

00:02:39   goofy one the Crystal Skull they are [TS]

00:02:41   Indiana Jones movies you know there's [TS]

00:02:43   like a formula and he's indiana jones [TS]

00:02:45   and it's like making a James Bond movie [TS]

00:02:47   whereas Raiders it wasn't it was like [TS]

00:02:49   they didn't even know what Indiana Jones [TS]

00:02:51   movie is which is interesting too [TS]

00:02:52   because when they did we release them on [TS]

00:02:54   DVD they change the title because it [TS]

00:02:57   used to be when it came out it was just [TS]

00:02:58   raiders of the lost ark and then it's [TS]

00:03:00   now if you look [TS]

00:03:01   I think it's officially indiana jones [TS]

00:03:03   and the raiders of the lost ark to like [TS]

00:03:05   on the labeling yeah to fit on the label [TS]

00:03:07   yeah but i just want just go look at [TS]

00:03:09   netflix because i just did a minute ago [TS]

00:03:11   and it will not come up if you just [TS]

00:03:13   search for i typed in Raiders and I [TS]

00:03:15   couldn't find it and I want huh i typed [TS]

00:03:17   in Raiders of the Lost Ark and the [TS]

00:03:18   autocomplete was indiana jones and the [TS]

00:03:20   raiders of the lost ark at least they [TS]

00:03:21   didn't retouch the credits they had the [TS]

00:03:23   credit still are that old you know kind [TS]

00:03:25   of like real old republic cereal credits [TS]

00:03:28   that just a raiders in big letters of [TS]

00:03:30   the Lost Ark they didn't sort of redcon [TS]

00:03:33   the the title in the film itself but all [TS]

00:03:36   the packaging they did and you know I [TS]

00:03:38   don't know there's like a i [TS]

00:03:40   don't--there's like a certain visceral [TS]

00:03:41   miss to it that it isn't in the other [TS]

00:03:43   ones because the other ones are Indiana [TS]

00:03:46   Jones movie i'm gonna steal this from [TS]

00:03:47   from our friend John siracusa who I [TS]

00:03:49   think mentioned this but some point when [TS]

00:03:51   I was tweeting or something about [TS]

00:03:52   Raiders before that one of the [TS]

00:03:54   differences and am definitely feeling [TS]

00:03:56   this from him is that because the other [TS]

00:03:58   ones are Indiana Jones movies you know [TS]

00:04:01   that Indiana Jones isn't gonna die [TS]

00:04:03   whereas the Raiders that's it's not even [TS]

00:04:05   clear like you know what if you've you [TS]

00:04:07   know watch them all 20 times you know [TS]

00:04:08   that but like the first time you saw it [TS]

00:04:10   there wasn't even a certainty that he [TS]

00:04:12   was going to make it out of it you know [TS]

00:04:14   that it was the beginning of a franchise [TS]

00:04:16   you know it didn't feel like it was just [TS]

00:04:18   a movie about this guy on a crazy [TS]

00:04:20   adventure on the way it starts you know [TS]

00:04:22   he's he's a mystery at the beginning [TS]

00:04:25   right i mean for the first five minutes [TS]

00:04:26   three minutes of the movie you just see [TS]

00:04:28   him in shadow and or just his back or [TS]

00:04:32   just the back of his head or just his [TS]

00:04:34   hand with the whip and it's it's only [TS]

00:04:36   three or four minutes in when he steps [TS]

00:04:38   out of the shadows and into the light [TS]

00:04:40   you're like a high terrorism forward and [TS]

00:04:42   you know it's not one of those [TS]

00:04:43   portrayals of like here's our hero you [TS]

00:04:45   know him you love him [TS]

00:04:46   it's this who's this guy you know Izzy [TS]

00:04:48   Izzy bad but he's kind of he's kind of [TS]

00:04:50   menacing and quiet and then you meet him [TS]

00:04:53   as opposed to any other movies I think [TS]

00:04:55   it's just like hey there is it's our [TS]

00:04:56   buddy [TS]

00:04:57   well I me and then the sense you know [TS]

00:04:58   the other two movies and three if you [TS]

00:05:01   will are all four still live up to that [TS]

00:05:03   first one to write I mean like John says [TS]

00:05:06   it you know became sort of a formula at [TS]

00:05:08   that point well how do we emulate this [TS]

00:05:09   movie that was so great [TS]

00:05:11   and it's well you know let's try to [TS]

00:05:12   follow some of the things that we did in [TS]

00:05:14   the first one but they're never quite [TS]

00:05:16   going to live up to to the original [TS]

00:05:18   source material as it were [TS]

00:05:20   well the last crusade is the most [TS]

00:05:24   obvious attempt to replay Raiders right [TS]

00:05:27   i mean the second one is to be credited [TS]

00:05:29   for trying to be different the third one [TS]

00:05:31   it's like well okay we're going to go [TS]

00:05:32   back to the Nazis and we're gonna have a [TS]

00:05:34   religious artifact right and i think [TS]

00:05:36   it's salvaged mainly by the fact that [TS]

00:05:38   the the sean connery Harrison Ford [TS]

00:05:40   relationship is just fantastic but yes [TS]

00:05:42   it does go back to the same well if you [TS]

00:05:44   will then full snakes that well there's [TS]

00:05:48   a bunch of things though about Raiders [TS]

00:05:50   that ma'am and I'll even go this far and [TS]

00:05:52   I've said this NP i say this to people [TS]

00:05:53   and I'm a fan of all sorts of movies i [TS]

00:05:56   moved you know love serious series [TS]

00:05:58   movies in addition to you know sigh fine [TS]

00:06:01   adventure type stuff [TS]

00:06:02   honestly I mean this is totally [TS]

00:06:04   straightforward that I think Raiders is [TS]

00:06:07   the best movie steven spielberg's ever [TS]

00:06:09   made I think it's one of the it's one of [TS]

00:06:10   the greatest movies ever made not just [TS]

00:06:12   in the in terms of action and stuff i [TS]

00:06:14   would hold it up there as one of the [TS]

00:06:16   easy top 10 movies ever made [TS]

00:06:18   maybe top 5i really i ate technically [TS]

00:06:21   it's just so well done it so well paced [TS]

00:06:23   it's it is original in ways that I [TS]

00:06:27   everything I mean you know the opening [TS]

00:06:30   that just I can't say enough good things [TS]

00:06:33   about it i was watching it this weekend [TS]

00:06:35   and in preparation semi preparation for [TS]

00:06:37   this and I was reminded actually couple [TS]

00:06:40   of things i was reminded roger ebert [TS]

00:06:41   writes about how before he lost his [TS]

00:06:43   voice he would he would do these [TS]

00:06:44   sessions with citizen came in front of a [TS]

00:06:47   group where he would they would posit [TS]

00:06:49   anybody could just shout pause at any [TS]

00:06:51   time and they would look at the frame [TS]

00:06:52   and talk about it and I thought I [TS]

00:06:54   actually think Raiders could withstand [TS]

00:06:55   that level of scrutiny [TS]

00:06:57   yeah as I was watching and I was [TS]

00:06:58   thinking you know even every the economy [TS]

00:07:01   of it every shot every line of dialogue [TS]

00:07:03   has a reason for being there some of it [TS]

00:07:06   really not obvious at the time and and [TS]

00:07:08   and doesn't feel obvious but at [TS]

00:07:10   everything you see the reason the monkey [TS]

00:07:12   is there the conversations that Marion [TS]

00:07:15   has when she's closing up the bar the [TS]

00:07:17   drinking the drinking scene which seems [TS]

00:07:19   to just be about her character until you [TS]

00:07:20   see her do it again in the desert with [TS]

00:07:22   Belloc there's so much there that is [TS]

00:07:25   perfectly every shot is there for a [TS]

00:07:27   reason and you could really take it [TS]

00:07:29   apart and the other the other thought I [TS]

00:07:30   had when I was watching it is it's old [TS]

00:07:32   enough now because it was made in what [TS]

00:07:34   1981 yeah sometimes 1988 it's old enough [TS]

00:07:37   now that it feels like a classic movie [TS]

00:07:39   and instead of being of its time I look [TS]

00:07:41   at it now and I think I feel about this [TS]

00:07:43   movie like I feel about Lawrence of [TS]

00:07:44   Arabia except actually liked this movie [TS]

00:07:45   more than Lawrence of Arabia so I I [TS]

00:07:48   think you're right I i would say it is [TS]

00:07:50   one of the best movies and and it might [TS]

00:07:52   be Spielberg's best it doesn't have a [TS]

00:07:54   lot of Spielberg he's got a lot of [TS]

00:07:56   things that he does that are kind of [TS]

00:07:57   kind of sappy I'm kind of over played [TS]

00:08:00   there are a few of those things in here [TS]

00:08:01   i think at one point in the monkey [TS]

00:08:03   actually goes 0 which is just like come [TS]

00:08:05   on [TS]

00:08:06   but generally I think you're right yeah [TS]

00:08:07   and then that whole class of filmmakers [TS]

00:08:09   those you know the Lucas Spielberg [TS]

00:08:11   Coppola you know that whole seventies [TS]

00:08:13   generation went through this whole thing [TS]

00:08:16   and it was fantastic what they did I [TS]

00:08:18   think I mean it's you know everybody [TS]

00:08:19   realizes the seventies were a fantastic [TS]

00:08:22   decade for movies and I think we're [TS]

00:08:24   traitors is a little bit more like one [TS]

00:08:26   of those seventies movies then the [TS]

00:08:29   eighties you know I think it feels a [TS]

00:08:30   little bit more like something from the [TS]

00:08:32   end of the came out a couple years after [TS]

00:08:35   but it was like of that you know whose [TS]

00:08:37   it was to this genre what star wars was [TS]

00:08:39   to science fiction you know well I think [TS]

00:08:41   about the Godfather the right is what [TS]

00:08:42   the Godfather he's a mobster movie right [TS]

00:08:44   and yet it's got all this praise right [TS]

00:08:46   was so what those guys did is they took [TS]

00:08:48   the genres that were typically schlocky [TS]

00:08:50   but they loved them and had good things [TS]

00:08:52   about them and so what if we did them [TS]

00:08:53   straight guy what if we did what if we [TS]

00:08:55   with good production values and we cast [TS]

00:08:59   you know the best actors in the world [TS]

00:09:00   you know Marlon Brando in a gangster [TS]

00:09:03   movie alec guinness as as the the you [TS]

00:09:06   know the wizard in Star Wars and play it [TS]

00:09:10   straight do all these things and do [TS]

00:09:11   these you know these things that [TS]

00:09:13   typically would look terrible real goofy [TS]

00:09:15   action you know bad bad special effects [TS]

00:09:18   on a soundstage let's do it straight and [TS]

00:09:20   I it really stands out whereas all the [TS]

00:09:24   other ones i think you know they come [TS]

00:09:26   across is doing an Indiana Jones movie [TS]

00:09:28   well I mean there's a certain also [TS]

00:09:30   certain i mean i guess for lack of a [TS]

00:09:31   better term total consistency to raiders [TS]

00:09:34   that I think is lacking for the other [TS]

00:09:35   ones and I think chasing your point [TS]

00:09:36   about like the monkey like theirs [TS]

00:09:38   there's a lot less you know I think a [TS]

00:09:40   lot of people who drive last crusade [TS]

00:09:42   especially focus on a couple specific [TS]

00:09:44   things such as making some of the [TS]

00:09:46   characters into caricatures specifically [TS]

00:09:49   saleh and Marcus who both are in the [TS]

00:09:53   first and raiders you know are both very [TS]

00:09:55   you know serious presences yeah right [TS]

00:09:58   and great characters and then it in in [TS]

00:10:01   Last Crusade they become the comic [TS]

00:10:02   relief especially Marcus yeah especially [TS]

00:10:04   Marcus it's the terrible what they did [TS]

00:10:07   to that character but I mean and I and I [TS]

00:10:08   can definitely see that in some way that [TS]

00:10:10   the Raiders you know can get Raiders has [TS]

00:10:12   genuinely funny moments without relax [TS]

00:10:15   relying on things that are you know [TS]

00:10:17   bumbling comedy you know for example I [TS]

00:10:19   mean one of the best games of all time [TS]

00:10:21   in that movie and of course in a movie [TS]

00:10:23   full of great scenes is the scene where [TS]

00:10:25   you know Andy's chasing Marion through [TS]

00:10:27   the marketplace when she's in the basket [TS]

00:10:29   and the care of the crowds part and the [TS]

00:10:31   guy comes out with a sword and you know [TS]

00:10:33   does this cool like flipping his sword [TS]

00:10:35   around whatever and and and he looks in [TS]

00:10:37   for a minute and pulls out his gun [TS]

00:10:38   shoots it and it's just such a it's a [TS]

00:10:40   great moment of of sort of you know kind [TS]

00:10:42   of darkish comedy but it's not it [TS]

00:10:45   doesn't sort of fall back on cheap [TS]

00:10:47   tropes it's unexpected which is what [TS]

00:10:49   makes it so funny right [TS]

00:10:51   doesn't seem implausible seems like [TS]

00:10:52   actually why not it's actually I'd like [TS]

00:10:54   why do you ask the question why wouldn't [TS]

00:10:56   you just shoot right right exactly [TS]

00:10:58   you know the backstory behind that right [TS]

00:10:59   yeah that's he got sick right nuclei in [TS]

00:11:01   terrible diarrhea [TS]

00:11:03   yeah and so then they did it there's a [TS]

00:11:04   reference to it in Temple of Doom they [TS]

00:11:06   sort of do a call back to that because [TS]

00:11:08   there's a minute where he goes for his [TS]

00:11:10   gun to shoot a guy and he doesn't have [TS]

00:11:12   it so he does he whips the sword out of [TS]

00:11:14   his hand or whatever [TS]

00:11:15   yeah there's the the only the only [TS]

00:11:16   moment in the whole Raiders that I think [TS]

00:11:18   is often wanted the the monkey stuff [TS]

00:11:21   like I think maybe stretches it but [TS]

00:11:23   doesn't go over the only thing that I [TS]

00:11:24   think is off is the scene on the boat [TS]

00:11:26   where Marion flips the mirror around and [TS]

00:11:28   hits him on the chin and it cuts to [TS]

00:11:30   outside it isn't even cut well it like [TS]

00:11:33   cuts to outside the boat and Indiana [TS]

00:11:35   Jones screams in pain and she just goes [TS]

00:11:37   what like she doesn't know what happened [TS]

00:11:39   like if you it doesn't make any sense [TS]

00:11:41   like if you swing a mirror like that and [TS]

00:11:43   hit somebody you know you hit them you'd [TS]

00:11:45   feel it you know on the mirror is the [TS]

00:11:47   only moment in the whole thing that [TS]

00:11:50   that feels off to me would you say it's [TS]

00:11:58   like they needed a a a comic relief beat [TS]

00:12:00   because they were really smack between [TS]

00:12:02   two sections of the movie and that [TS]

00:12:04   supposed to be a romantic moment with [TS]

00:12:06   Marion and indie before that the final [TS]

00:12:10   act kicks in but the mirror hitting him [TS]

00:12:12   in the chin isn't this is slapstick and [TS]

00:12:14   it is a little slap see i love it though [TS]

00:12:16   I there's something about that scene [TS]

00:12:17   that that I think is I mean yes the sort [TS]

00:12:20   of reaction never quite made sense but [TS]

00:12:22   at the same time I love that right the [TS]

00:12:23   scene is good i love that bit yeah [TS]

00:12:26   there's a scene early on that I really [TS]

00:12:28   appreciated and watching this movie [TS]

00:12:29   again you talk about taking this movie [TS]

00:12:32   and playing it straight these genres [TS]

00:12:33   pictures like The Godfather and star [TS]

00:12:36   wars and and raiders and I love a scene [TS]

00:12:39   actually if you have a broad comedy the [TS]

00:12:41   scene where where we cut from the jungle [TS]

00:12:43   to the college and India is giving his [TS]

00:12:45   lecture and there's the girl and this is [TS]

00:12:47   supposed to be the thirties and there's [TS]

00:12:48   the girl with i love you written on her [TS]

00:12:51   eyelids which I thought I'm know that [TS]

00:12:54   that seems kind of wacky for the [TS]

00:12:57   thirties but anyway the scene where he [TS]

00:12:59   gets called by marcus into the library [TS]

00:13:01   basically because the FBI men are there [TS]

00:13:03   asking about this naughty telegram that [TS]

00:13:07   mentions a bit rate Ravenwood and as [TS]

00:13:10   they're discussing Tanis did you keep [TS]

00:13:13   dropping all these bombs that that we [TS]

00:13:15   don't understand what they mean and it's [TS]

00:13:17   tennis and Ravenwood and the Lost Ark if [TS]

00:13:20   you watch that scene you look at just [TS]

00:13:22   look at harrison ford and denim Elliot [TS]

00:13:25   looking at each other as these guys are [TS]

00:13:27   reading this dialogue it's amazing [TS]

00:13:29   because they are they are basically [TS]

00:13:31   underlining all the things that are [TS]

00:13:33   important in that scene with just their [TS]

00:13:36   eyes glancing at each other because you [TS]

00:13:38   know that these two guys and you get the [TS]

00:13:39   sense immediately these guys really know [TS]

00:13:41   what they're doing [TS]

00:13:42   Tanis development preceding choir [TS]

00:13:46   headpiece staff of raw Abner Ravenwood [TS]

00:13:51   us Nazis of discovered tunis just what [TS]

00:13:55   does that mean to you panic [TS]

00:13:56   well city of tennis is one of the [TS]

00:13:59   possible resting places of the Lost Ark [TS]

00:14:01   the Lost Ark of the Covenant the chest [TS]

00:14:05   the Hebrews used to carry around the 10 [TS]

00:14:06   commandments anybody making managed to [TS]

00:14:08   let the Ten Commandments is the actual [TS]

00:14:11   Ten Commandments the original stone [TS]

00:14:13   tablets that Moses brought down out of [TS]

00:14:15   Monterra and smashed if you believe in [TS]

00:14:16   that sort of thing you guys ever going [TS]

00:14:19   to send a spoon [TS]

00:14:20   however an Egyptian pharaoh mission yes [TS]

00:14:23   invaded the city of Jerusalem run about [TS]

00:14:24   980 BC may have taken the artifact the [TS]

00:14:27   city of tennis and hidden in a secret [TS]

00:14:30   chamber Holy Well of Souls secret [TS]

00:14:33   chamber however about a year after the [TS]

00:14:36   affair would return to Egypt the city of [TS]

00:14:38   tennis was consumed by the desert in a [TS]

00:14:41   sandstorm which lasted a whole year like [TS]

00:14:45   clean by the rules of obviously we've [TS]

00:14:51   come to the right man I i would argue [TS]

00:14:53   that might be the best plot explication [TS]

00:14:55   scene ever I know they're unaware [TS]

00:14:57   they're rolling out that entire plot [TS]

00:14:59   with all that backstory and it's [TS]

00:15:01   gripping and one of the reasons i think [TS]

00:15:03   it is just because Harrison Ford and [TS]

00:15:05   denim Elliot are looking at each other [TS]

00:15:07   and you you realize you're not just [TS]

00:15:09   watching a download here you're watching [TS]

00:15:11   really smart people understand what's [TS]

00:15:14   important in the download right and the [TS]

00:15:16   whole thing and it play it also yeah [TS]

00:15:17   it's a great acting you know it's a [TS]

00:15:20   great cast great great scene it's even [TS]

00:15:22   in a beautiful room just that big big [TS]

00:15:24   huge wake up on a stage [TS]

00:15:27   yeah it's like a giant lecture hall or [TS]

00:15:29   something they really make any sense [TS]

00:15:30   that they have the meeting there but [TS]

00:15:31   it's great and then there's that there's [TS]

00:15:33   a blackboard though and you can use it [TS]

00:15:34   to diagram and you kind of it also gives [TS]

00:15:37   you a better feeling for Indiana Jones [TS]

00:15:40   as a professor because instead of being [TS]

00:15:42   in the middle of some boring lecture is [TS]

00:15:44   not really even into all of a sudden [TS]

00:15:46   this is when he's really into it you [TS]

00:15:47   know and this is his research right like [TS]

00:15:50   and we're his class we the audience get [TS]

00:15:52   to be his class and he's telling us [TS]

00:15:53   exactly what we need to know it is it's [TS]

00:15:55   it's a great explanation and it's sort [TS]

00:15:57   of like that the old a [TS]

00:15:59   adage about how to give a presentation [TS]

00:16:00   tell people what you're going to tell [TS]

00:16:02   them tell them and then tell them what [TS]

00:16:04   you told them [TS]

00:16:04   indian Marcus they interrupt each other [TS]

00:16:06   down and and talk over each other and [TS]

00:16:09   finish each others sentences and it's [TS]

00:16:10   done in a way that brilliantly by I i [TS]

00:16:13   guess i should say by Lawrence Kasdan I [TS]

00:16:15   wrote the screenplay and then and by the [TS]

00:16:17   actors in performing the scene you're [TS]

00:16:19   informed about their entire relationship [TS]

00:16:20   really in that scene based on what they [TS]

00:16:24   do that you know Marcus knows as much as [TS]

00:16:26   indie does and he's very enthusiastic [TS]

00:16:29   Marcus is happy to let him because he's [TS]

00:16:31   back at the college now india's roaming [TS]

00:16:33   around he's happy to let him finish and [TS]

00:16:35   tell the story because he's so [TS]

00:16:36   enthusiastic about it it says so much [TS]

00:16:38   about those characters just in the way [TS]

00:16:40   they interact and something else i [TS]

00:16:41   noticed about it is it sets up Indy as [TS]

00:16:45   as a non-believer because this is a [TS]

00:16:47   movie about a religious artifact and at [TS]

00:16:50   several points the the government men [TS]

00:16:52   talked about it and talked about the ten [TS]

00:16:54   commandments and andy says if you [TS]

00:16:56   believe that sort of thing and it's very [TS]

00:16:58   clear from the stuff that he says her [TS]

00:17:00   throughout throughout the movie even [TS]

00:17:02   leading up to the to the end where the [TS]

00:17:05   breath of God is made manifest is that [TS]

00:17:07   he doesn't really believe in that stuff [TS]

00:17:09   he sort of in it because the stuff is [TS]

00:17:10   old and valuable and cool and not [TS]

00:17:13   because of the religious significance it [TS]

00:17:15   sort of doesn't mean anything to him [TS]

00:17:16   which is interesting given what ends up [TS]

00:17:18   happening and it is also good it's you [TS]

00:17:21   know if part part screenplay part acting [TS]

00:17:23   part direction it's all of it all the [TS]

00:17:25   way that movies are all those things [TS]

00:17:27   combined is the way that their [TS]

00:17:28   conversation between each other with the [TS]

00:17:30   interrupting is clearly that they are [TS]

00:17:32   both experts and they respect each other [TS]

00:17:34   right and when they're talking to each [TS]

00:17:36   other they're not really there they know [TS]

00:17:38   that they're talking over the other two [TS]

00:17:39   guys heads and when they talk to the [TS]

00:17:41   government guys there they're talking [TS]

00:17:43   down to them not necessarily [TS]

00:17:44   dismissively but we know you guys are [TS]

00:17:46   idiots but that's helpful to us the [TS]

00:17:47   audience because we're that we don't [TS]

00:17:49   know this stuff either [TS]

00:17:50   the other thing too about that scene is [TS]

00:17:52   I've always thought that it it just the [TS]

00:17:54   whole thing seems totally credible like [TS]

00:17:56   like duh [TS]

00:17:57   didn't you ever learn this in in bible [TS]

00:17:58   school but you know the headpiece to the [TS]

00:18:00   staff of raw and and all this stuff it [TS]

00:18:02   all seemed you know you know the Ark of [TS]

00:18:04   the Covenant is an actual [TS]

00:18:06   biblical artifact but then all the other [TS]

00:18:08   stuff to me and all all seems totally [TS]

00:18:10   real like it gets to buy into the entire [TS]

00:18:12   premise right that somebody ought to be [TS]

00:18:14   able to actually do this somebody if if [TS]

00:18:16   somebody actually discovered Tanis they [TS]

00:18:19   should they should be able to find the [TS]

00:18:20   map room and if they had the headpiece [TS]

00:18:22   to the staff of raw they could they [TS]

00:18:25   could find the Ark of the Covenant and [TS]

00:18:26   and you know the elements that are there [TS]

00:18:28   of the supernatural I think are so well [TS]

00:18:31   played in terms of being at least up [TS]

00:18:33   until the very last scene they're very [TS]

00:18:35   subtle and I think that's yeah I prior [TS]

00:18:38   to the very last scene i think the only [TS]

00:18:40   indication you get is that one scene of [TS]

00:18:42   the arc on the interest in the hold of [TS]

00:18:44   the boat where it with the rat where [TS]

00:18:48   it's like robbing or whatever and you [TS]

00:18:49   see the rap like getting pushed away and [TS]

00:18:51   then they see the Nazi symbol like [TS]

00:18:52   burned off of it later but although [TS]

00:18:54   thatthat's just these little touches [TS]

00:18:56   that like it's still not mean that's the [TS]

00:18:58   part where you start thinking okay this [TS]

00:19:00   is you know a little bit more out there [TS]

00:19:01   but up until that point everything does [TS]

00:19:03   seem very well we like India are very oh [TS]

00:19:05   this is just you know in a valuable and [TS]

00:19:08   artifact that we'd like to have that's [TS]

00:19:11   written that I agree and it's part of [TS]

00:19:13   the story it's part of what makes it [TS]

00:19:14   great and and there's yeah it gives it a [TS]

00:19:16   sort of why are they even why they've [TS]

00:19:18   been going through all this before you [TS]

00:19:19   know it is quit is a cool artifact is it [TS]

00:19:22   worth it to go through all this there is [TS]

00:19:24   another scene where I'm the lock is I [TS]

00:19:28   guess romancing romancing Marion in the [TS]

00:19:32   tent where he talks about the ark as an [TS]

00:19:35   artifact and i was i was tuned into it [TS]

00:19:38   because then all of a sudden he sort of [TS]

00:19:39   like shift gears and starts to say oh [TS]

00:19:42   and no army can be defeated if it's got [TS]

00:19:44   the arc in front of it because it's got [TS]

00:19:46   the power of God which always seemed [TS]

00:19:47   very strange to me because I other than [TS]

00:19:50   that seen Belloc seems to be completely [TS]

00:19:52   mercenary although you know I guess at [TS]

00:19:54   the end when it's revealed that he too [TS]

00:19:56   has this hope that it's religiously [TS]

00:19:58   powerful but only because he can use it [TS]

00:20:00   for his own purposes so he sort of more [TS]

00:20:02   of a believer than indy but much more [TS]

00:20:04   cynical about it than India's well he's [TS]

00:20:06   very advantageous to and we see that in [TS]

00:20:08   the very first scene with him to write [TS]

00:20:09   where he gets the idol and he takes it [TS]

00:20:11   and use it to basically tell all the [TS]

00:20:14   name is it you have to go after it [TS]

00:20:17   go after indie and so I think there's [TS]

00:20:18   clearly an idea that like in these kind [TS]

00:20:21   of in this for you know knowledge for [TS]

00:20:23   for his own sort of curiosity where as [TS]

00:20:26   bella is really interested in in getting [TS]

00:20:29   power and I think that I mean it's again [TS]

00:20:31   it's kind of summer but it sets up [TS]

00:20:32   blocks character perfectly like when we [TS]

00:20:35   see him in that last scene why is he [TS]

00:20:36   doing this well we can kind of [TS]

00:20:37   understand that like this you know we've [TS]

00:20:39   sort of seen his behavior in this in [TS]

00:20:41   this example before there's a great [TS]

00:20:43   scene between Bella candy that when they [TS]

00:20:45   really are there in the cafe in cairo [TS]

00:20:47   yeah and right and Andy thanks Marion is [TS]

00:20:51   dead and he's been drinking and he's [TS]

00:20:52   basically gonna it ended [TS]

00:20:54   he's like willing to go out in a hail of [TS]

00:20:56   gunfire and what is what struck me about [TS]

00:20:58   it and watching it again is that it [TS]

00:21:00   could have been written so badly and it [TS]

00:21:02   isn't unlocked is your typical sort of [TS]

00:21:04   villain speech of we are so alike you [TS]

00:21:07   and I ND and you would take very little [TS]

00:21:09   to make you like me and the the wrong [TS]

00:21:11   way to write that scene is to have it [TS]

00:21:13   mean I'll never be like you and you [TS]

00:21:14   don't understand and you and I have very [TS]

00:21:16   much alike ecology is our invention that [TS]

00:21:22   we have both fallen from the pure faith [TS]

00:21:24   methods are not different as much as you [TS]

00:21:27   pretend I'm a shadowy reflection of you [TS]

00:21:33   don't take on a nudge to make you like [TS]

00:21:35   me to push you out of the life now you [TS]

00:21:38   get nest you know it's a nice look at [TS]

00:21:45   this it's worthless [TS]

00:21:48   ten dollars from a vendor in the street [TS]

00:21:51   but i think it and buried in the sand [TS]

00:21:53   for a thousand years it becomes [TS]

00:21:54   priceless black the armed men will [TS]

00:21:58   comfort you and me I think though I [TS]

00:22:03   think that part of it too and i agree [TS]

00:22:05   that you know and and that happened [TS]

00:22:07   hundreds of movies before and hundreds [TS]

00:22:09   after the the you know we're not that [TS]

00:22:11   you know there are two sides of the same [TS]

00:22:13   coin speech from the bad guy to the UK i [TS]

00:22:15   think it's cool in that 10 because it [TS]

00:22:17   act i think it actually is sort of true [TS]

00:22:19   well there's that too right that he [TS]

00:22:22   doesn't he doesn't respond and he [TS]

00:22:24   doesn't deny it right it actually is [TS]

00:22:27   true because and that's one of the [TS]

00:22:28   things in a lot of these movies of of [TS]

00:22:30   that John you know Star Wars is one of [TS]

00:22:32   them to what yeah but where there's [TS]

00:22:34   multiple bad guys it's not just one dr. [TS]

00:22:37   evil guy at the head and a bunch of [TS]

00:22:39   no-name of Stormtroopers underneath [TS]

00:22:41   there's a couple of bad guys so you've [TS]

00:22:42   got taught you know the Nazi with the [TS]

00:22:45   burned hand who's sort of the boogeyman [TS]

00:22:47   bad guy like there's really just [TS]

00:22:49   irredeemable I mean he's just sort of [TS]

00:22:51   like an evil evil guy who's you know [TS]

00:22:53   willing to burn people's faces and and [TS]

00:22:56   stuff right don't wanna buy you some [TS]

00:22:58   wine and truly are pretty travel and [TS]

00:23:01   he's lazy he's yeah he's not well he's [TS]

00:23:04   are scrupulous but he's not evil right [TS]

00:23:06   and these obsessed most with getting [TS]

00:23:09   these artifacts and that's sort of [TS]

00:23:11   indiana jones' thing too is it's just in [TS]

00:23:13   it to get the artifacts you know and [TS]

00:23:15   like you said he's not really a believer [TS]

00:23:16   he doesn't really care it doesn't even [TS]

00:23:18   really it never really seems to even [TS]

00:23:19   cross his mind about what if the are [TS]

00:23:21   really is what legend says that it is he [TS]

00:23:24   just wants it in fact they ask you know [TS]

00:23:26   you're going to give it to Hitler and [TS]

00:23:27   he's like well eventually but like he's [TS]

00:23:30   going to take it for himself and i'm [TS]

00:23:31   hitler you know I'll deal with it later [TS]

00:23:34   what about your boss their fear I [TS]

00:23:37   thought he was waiting to take position [TS]

00:23:41   all in good time when I'm finished and i [TS]

00:23:45   love that India's willing I mean like [TS]

00:23:47   not only he not only are they not that [TS]

00:23:49   different in some ways but you know in [TS]

00:23:51   these response in that in that scene in [TS]

00:23:52   the cafe is basically like i am going to [TS]

00:23:55   kill you and and you know they're gonna [TS]

00:23:57   kill me so let's just do this right like [TS]

00:23:59   that's not exactly what you expect your [TS]

00:24:02   good guy to do right left [TS]

00:24:04   I mean and i love that line that that [TS]

00:24:06   line about you know he says Jones do you [TS]

00:24:09   realize what the art is it's time to me [TS]

00:24:12   that it's a radio for speaking to God [TS]

00:24:16   and it's within my reach you want to [TS]

00:24:21   talk to God [TS]

00:24:24   let's go see them together I've got [TS]

00:24:26   nothing it's just I just love the way he [TS]

00:24:35   drives at home like you know what I got [TS]

00:24:37   I have nothing left you know you [TS]

00:24:38   basically taken away everything so I [TS]

00:24:41   don't have it handy I should have [TS]

00:24:43   probably but somebody could probably [TS]

00:24:45   google it I don't remember who wrote it [TS]

00:24:47   but somebody wrote a blog post i think [TS]

00:24:49   it was in the last two years might have [TS]

00:24:51   been too much which who writes at a good [TS]

00:24:54   filmmaking weblog just analyzing that [TS]

00:24:58   scene and the editing the camera angles [TS]

00:25:01   and and when they cut and what you see [TS]

00:25:03   of that cafe where you know Andy thanks [TS]

00:25:06   Mary instead and he meets Belloc and [TS]

00:25:08   he's rescued by solace kids and it is [TS]

00:25:11   it's you know and he just goes through [TS]

00:25:13   shot by you know like like sort of like [TS]

00:25:14   Woody versus going you can just go [TS]

00:25:16   through shot-by-shot and it's just one [TS]

00:25:18   set up after another and it's just [TS]

00:25:20   perfect the next the next scene after [TS]

00:25:22   there are no throwaway that's one of the [TS]

00:25:24   things about writers there's no [TS]

00:25:25   throwaway scenes every scene has [TS]

00:25:27   something that you can talk about yes [TS]

00:25:29   sure I actually noticed something when I [TS]

00:25:30   was watching it i watch some of it on [TS]

00:25:32   the bus coming into work this morning [TS]

00:25:34   that I'm there are these scenes that [TS]

00:25:35   scene is set up by the scenes of the the [TS]

00:25:38   guys that sort of Nazis in their suits [TS]

00:25:41   blocking some alleyways that leads to [TS]

00:25:44   the whole basket chase and all of that [TS]

00:25:46   right and you know there aren't very [TS]

00:25:47   many of them and it's sort of unclear [TS]

00:25:49   there's not a lot of detail about who [TS]

00:25:51   they are it doesn't really matter you [TS]

00:25:52   know that there's a guy with the eye [TS]

00:25:54   patch and their the Nazis in the suits [TS]

00:25:56   and then they were there they're walking [TS]

00:25:58   down the corridor and you know that [TS]

00:25:59   essentially it's going to corner Indian [TS]

00:26:02   marion and lead into this entire section [TS]

00:26:04   of the movie and it's it's so economical [TS]

00:26:06   and it's all it's all necessary stuff to [TS]

00:26:10   drive it along and and the scene where [TS]

00:26:12   the where we're solid sort of cheering [TS]

00:26:14   indie up and it and explain about the [TS]

00:26:17   the headpiece where the monkey is is [TS]

00:26:20   eating the poison dates and dying that [TS]

00:26:22   scene is has a lot of amazing shots [TS]

00:26:24   including that last scene which is [TS]

00:26:25   almost like the requiem for the monkey [TS]

00:26:27   which is shot from above the ceiling [TS]

00:26:29   looking through the fan down to the dead [TS]

00:26:31   monkey with its hand open and the date [TS]

00:26:33   on the floor it's like you know that [TS]

00:26:35   scene isn't so vital that it needs [TS]

00:26:37   did and an amazing piece of of setup and [TS]

00:26:41   yet it's amazing anyway it didn't need [TS]

00:26:43   to be amazing but it is just a monkey [TS]

00:26:45   right every scene stands is like a [TS]

00:26:47   little short film great i wanted to [TS]

00:26:50   bring up Karen Allen allowed because one [TS]

00:26:54   of the things that's really interesting [TS]

00:26:54   about the next two movies and and of [TS]

00:26:57   course they ended up bringing your path [TS]

00:26:58   for but for the Crystal Skull is the [TS]

00:27:01   next two movies i feel like and i think [TS]

00:27:03   there was I think there was a falling [TS]

00:27:04   out or something where they where she [TS]

00:27:05   wanted more money or they have this [TS]

00:27:07   famous lesions fieldwork I think didn't [TS]

00:27:09   get along or something yeah because boy [TS]

00:27:11   those next to movies seem desperate to [TS]

00:27:14   try and find a way to replace her and I [TS]

00:27:15   don't think they do I think they fail [TS]

00:27:17   and I think that they're weaker in some [TS]

00:27:19   ways specifically because Marion isn't [TS]

00:27:22   in I think you're right she's so great [TS]

00:27:24   but at the same time yet they can't find [TS]

00:27:25   a worthy file right so in in Temple of [TS]

00:27:27   Doom we have cake tap shah which who is [TS]

00:27:30   probably stands alone is one of the [TS]

00:27:32   worst just I that she is just terrible [TS]

00:27:34   in that movie which is which is [TS]

00:27:35   unfortunate but i always thought last [TS]

00:27:38   crusade did a fascinating twists on that [TS]

00:27:40   which is in that you have the the [TS]

00:27:42   character of Ilsa [TS]

00:27:43   whoo-hoo turns out of course to be evil [TS]

00:27:45   and in fact dies at the end of the film [TS]

00:27:48   which is kind of just this fascinating [TS]

00:27:50   like you know it's like you know I John [TS]

00:27:53   reference the bond movies earlier and [TS]

00:27:54   bond movies kind of usually have this [TS]

00:27:56   formula of there is usually the bad [TS]

00:27:57   woman a good woman and then good woman [TS]

00:28:00   that's really kind of insignificant and [TS]

00:28:02   I thought it was just it was such a [TS]

00:28:03   fascinating set up to have this woman [TS]

00:28:06   who you can think of [TS]

00:28:08   she'll get redeemed right because she [TS]

00:28:10   she gives indie up to the Nazis as well [TS]

00:28:12   as dad and in the end she really doesn't [TS]

00:28:15   and kind of only serves as like a [TS]

00:28:17   character lesson for indy in terms of [TS]

00:28:20   you know not not getting obsessed but [TS]

00:28:23   you're right that Karen Allen I think as [TS]

00:28:25   Sir Marion is the de facto you know [TS]

00:28:28   she's I know if you want a soul mate but [TS]

00:28:31   like I think that's the idea of bringing [TS]

00:28:32   her back in the fourth one was that they [TS]

00:28:35   had a report in a chemistry that that [TS]

00:28:37   was totally unmatched by anything that [TS]

00:28:39   we saw and it was a really original [TS]

00:28:40   thinking and casting I mean I think it's [TS]

00:28:42   half half Princess Leia and then [TS]

00:28:45   half making it even better so with with [TS]

00:28:49   Princess Leia you've got this character [TS]

00:28:52   who is sarcastic sassy uses a gun you [TS]

00:28:57   know now on the other hand she's still a [TS]

00:28:59   princess [TS]

00:29:00   you know I still think that's sort of in [TS]

00:29:02   hindsight sort of a goofy thing you know [TS]

00:29:03   that you know you gotta rescue the [TS]

00:29:05   princess it's like little a little corny [TS]

00:29:07   but you know the way that the carrie [TS]

00:29:09   fisher character is not what you think [TS]

00:29:11   of as a sci-fi princess at all at least [TS]

00:29:13   pre Star Wars know if it's lucas did [TS]

00:29:16   that movie now she would have been like [TS]

00:29:17   the undersecretary for agriculture right [TS]

00:29:20   between unions as good as she gets right [TS]

00:29:22   you know she's like he keeps up with [TS]

00:29:24   guys right she's not a tough but she's [TS]

00:29:26   not quite as much of a tough chick is [TS]

00:29:28   Karen Allen is but she's right yeah [TS]

00:29:29   Karen Allen has the same you know that [TS]

00:29:33   the she's not demure you know she's not [TS]

00:29:36   a shrinking violet she's not there to be [TS]

00:29:38   rescued now and and then exist you know [TS]

00:29:39   think think exactly like what's-her-name [TS]

00:29:42   and temple of doom [TS]

00:29:43   kay-kay capture capture right Kate [TS]

00:29:46   Capshaw where Kate Capshaw's you know is [TS]

00:29:48   that to me is actually the obvious way [TS]

00:29:50   to do it where you've got this woman [TS]

00:29:52   who's completely helpless and I know [TS]

00:29:54   that they played it for comedy and and [TS]

00:29:56   you know that you couldn't do anything [TS]

00:29:57   and she was worried about breaking her [TS]

00:29:58   nails and you have to stick her hand and [TS]

00:30:00   the bugs and all this stuff and she was [TS]

00:30:02   scared of all this but that's the the [TS]

00:30:05   more obvious way to do it you know that [TS]

00:30:07   that the the woman is real girly and [TS]

00:30:10   needs to be rescued and you know the man [TS]

00:30:13   is the guy who does everything Karen [TS]

00:30:14   Allen is total opposite and then you [TS]

00:30:16   take it to the other instead of being a [TS]

00:30:17   princess she's she's really in desperate [TS]

00:30:20   straight to the beginning of the movie [TS]

00:30:21   she's living in Nepal running a bar [TS]

00:30:24   running a boring her money by i'm having [TS]

00:30:27   a drinking contest right she's in a [TS]

00:30:29   dirty ball barn apology don't have [TS]

00:30:31   enough money to get back to the United [TS]

00:30:33   States and [TS]

00:30:34   and you know as you know severe when [TS]

00:30:36   she's drunk she's drinking big guys [TS]

00:30:37   under the table right through which I [TS]

00:30:38   mean what it what a welcome for your [TS]

00:30:40   heroine right right right and just you [TS]

00:30:43   know and just the whole way that I [TS]

00:30:44   honestly it's probably my favorite scene [TS]

00:30:47   in the whole I don't know it's hard for [TS]

00:30:48   me to pick a favorite thing i love the [TS]

00:30:49   movie so much but the one that I can [TS]

00:30:51   recite every line from his is taught [TS]

00:30:54   coming tom is his henchmen coming into [TS]

00:30:56   the bar [TS]

00:30:57   good evening for line the bars closed [TS]

00:31:01   here we have not testy when you want the [TS]

00:31:08   same thing your friend dr. Jones wanted [TS]

00:31:10   Shirley told you there would be as [TS]

00:31:13   interested parties must have slipped his [TS]

00:31:17   mind [TS]

00:31:17   the man is the various I hope for your [TS]

00:31:23   sake he is not eating planet [TS]

00:31:25   why are you willing to offer more almost [TS]

00:31:29   certainly [TS]

00:31:31   but she's so you know it is not it [TS]

00:31:36   you know who who who is the woman like [TS]

00:31:38   that movie before you know it's like [TS]

00:31:40   nobody I mean there were tough women out [TS]

00:31:42   there were some great characters played [TS]

00:31:43   in the old war movies which clearly [TS]

00:31:45   Raiders withdrawing from great [TS]

00:31:47   absolutely not just from the serials but [TS]

00:31:49   it drew from those new war movies you [TS]

00:31:52   know with the Bogart and Bacall I mean [TS]

00:31:55   there's definitely a lot of lauren [TS]

00:31:56   bacall oh absolutely Aryan but those [TS]

00:31:59   those movies from like the forties and [TS]

00:32:01   fifties they were they were head you [TS]

00:32:04   know they couldn't they couldn't push it [TS]

00:32:05   that far in terms of what could a woman [TS]

00:32:07   do you could not seen in the bar with [TS]

00:32:09   Indian and Karen Allen gonna be bogart [TS]

00:32:12   and bacall oh absolutely no internet [TS]

00:32:14   practically the models right out to have [TS]

00:32:16   and have-nots and you know even the way [TS]

00:32:18   it's lit and it now its color not black [TS]

00:32:20   and white but it's it's almost [TS]

00:32:21   monochrome with those real warm tones [TS]

00:32:25   from you know where all the light is [TS]

00:32:26   from actual like fire like a fireplace [TS]

00:32:28   and right handle and it's all and it's [TS]

00:32:29   all shadows and the shadows throughout [TS]

00:32:31   this movie I mean it's one it's like the [TS]

00:32:33   look for the shadows the next time you [TS]

00:32:35   watch it its it's hilarious this movie [TS]

00:32:37   is all shadows but in that scene that's [TS]

00:32:40   where the shadows of the most obvious [TS]

00:32:41   india shadow when he walks in during the [TS]

00:32:44   gunfight ensues people shot with in [TS]

00:32:46   shadow just their silhouette is getting [TS]

00:32:48   shot just amazing the lighting in there [TS]

00:32:49   i'm not even i'm not really a great [TS]

00:32:51   visualizer of things just close my eyes [TS]

00:32:54   and imagine what it would look like but [TS]

00:32:55   I I can you can actually it's easy you [TS]

00:32:57   can just imagine that scene in black and [TS]

00:32:59   white [TS]

00:32:59   oh yeah I can you know 1940 start over [TS]

00:33:02   right that's my favorite scene and it's [TS]

00:33:05   not because it's the one and it's it [TS]

00:33:07   they do such a good job with the [TS]

00:33:09   introductions of all the characters you [TS]

00:33:11   know like you said like at the very [TS]

00:33:12   beginning of the movie when you're [TS]

00:33:13   introduced to indiana jones and it's [TS]

00:33:14   this long the serious tease [TS]

00:33:16   well here's your introduction Marion [TS]

00:33:18   first the drinking contest then you know [TS]

00:33:20   the Nazis come together and she's not [TS]

00:33:21   afraid she's not afraid until they've [TS]

00:33:23   actually got a red-hot poker about to [TS]

00:33:25   Scarface up and it's a great [TS]

00:33:28   introduction but she's just she's not [TS]

00:33:30   what you expect is the heroine in action [TS]

00:33:32   movie [TS]

00:33:32   absolutely not and even casting wise [TS]

00:33:35   she's she doesn't look like you know [TS]

00:33:37   it's not the is she's not that she's not [TS]

00:33:39   an attractive woman but she's not like a [TS]

00:33:41   bombshell she's not the [TS]

00:33:43   however that woman as you play Elsa and [TS]

00:33:45   in the third movie poor allison duty who [TS]

00:33:48   never never really did anything else [TS]

00:33:49   right [TS]

00:33:50   you know she just doesn't even look the [TS]

00:33:52   part in another way that they subvert [TS]

00:33:54   the whole the whole heroin hero [TS]

00:33:57   relationship is you mentioned you know [TS]

00:33:59   she's not your usual kind of heroin [TS]

00:34:01   where you gotta rescue her and all that [TS]

00:34:02   but there is in fact the scene in the [TS]

00:34:04   desert where indie comes into the tent [TS]

00:34:06   discover she's alive it's great here to [TS]

00:34:08   rescue her of it and again he doesn't [TS]

00:34:10   rescue realize our backup think thinks [TS]

00:34:13   better of it ties her back up there [TS]

00:34:14   doesn't it puts his blade away puts the [TS]

00:34:17   gag back on her and says I'll see you [TS]

00:34:19   later and leaves her and then of course [TS]

00:34:20   she's almost you know tortured again i'm [TS]

00:34:23   at after that so it which is it's just [TS]

00:34:25   amazing it's like what am I watching [TS]

00:34:27   here the hero is found found the girl he [TS]

00:34:29   can rescue where he's like but doesn't [TS]

00:34:31   that is so we battle without the whole [TS]

00:34:33   the whole thing with with indie right is [TS]

00:34:35   that even though he's set up to be our [TS]

00:34:38   hero think about like you know if you [TS]

00:34:40   look at his track record right like in [TS]

00:34:42   the movie he doesn't do such a good job [TS]

00:34:45   right he makes it all the way through [TS]

00:34:46   the damn temple and then you know Belloc [TS]

00:34:48   takes the thing away from him he's [TS]

00:34:50   scared of the snake in the cockpit you [TS]

00:34:52   know like he's constantly doing these [TS]

00:34:54   things which are probably not like you [TS]

00:34:56   know the real is like crack the Well of [TS]

00:34:58   Souls they crack the Well of Souls is [TS]

00:34:59   this great moments like me haha we've [TS]

00:35:01   got Hitler and then it gets kinda looks [TS]

00:35:02   down he's like oh well nobody's ever [TS]

00:35:04   seen when they open up his neck so the [TS]

00:35:06   the the atomistic comes out its like the [TS]

00:35:08   this hasn't been opened since biblical [TS]

00:35:10   times and he looks down he's like how [TS]

00:35:13   snakes right it's like completely I mean [TS]

00:35:15   and I think this again about like the [TS]

00:35:16   scene [TS]

00:35:17   another great scene i think is that [TS]

00:35:19   scene where he has a boxing match with [TS]

00:35:22   the big huge Germany I it was going to [TS]

00:35:24   get scrapped but basically does frequent [TS]

00:35:26   you know it kind of like you see him [TS]

00:35:27   going into it like sighing like a man i [TS]

00:35:30   just gonna I'm not gonna win this one [TS]

00:35:32   any punches the guy right like once and [TS]

00:35:34   like purses and you know and I mean I [TS]

00:35:37   think in some ways he's kind of the only [TS]

00:35:39   the only other film character i can [TS]

00:35:41   think who takes that level of abuses [TS]

00:35:42   like John McClane in the die hard movies [TS]

00:35:44   with the yoga's we have this great like [TS]

00:35:47   15 minutes [TS]

00:35:48   chase scene which is just a [TS]

00:35:50   fantastically shot chasing where he's [TS]

00:35:52   all of you know jump and run over the [TS]

00:35:53   trucks and getting dragged behind the [TS]

00:35:55   trucks and everything and I [TS]

00:35:57   yeah i think what's great is that you [TS]

00:35:58   know he's he's kind of indestructible [TS]

00:36:00   yes to that certain extent in the way [TS]

00:36:02   that that all good action heroes are but [TS]

00:36:05   he doesn't it's not all about him just [TS]

00:36:07   like beating the crap out of everybody [TS]

00:36:09   right like he got he shows the we're [TS]

00:36:11   right you should run out of the car he [TS]

00:36:14   gets punched by a bunch of Germans he [TS]

00:36:16   gets dragged behind the car for a while [TS]

00:36:17   I mean he really has hit points don't [TS]

00:36:19   come back [TS]

00:36:21   exactly and I mean I love and that of [TS]

00:36:23   course is the setup for that great line [TS]

00:36:25   in the scene with Marion it's not the [TS]

00:36:27   years it's the mileage which is just you [TS]

00:36:30   know I think one of those years sums up [TS]

00:36:33   Indiana Jones kind of in a nutshell i [TS]

00:36:35   love Raiders so much more than the other [TS]

00:36:37   movies and I just don't think they [TS]

00:36:38   really stand up that much what but there [TS]

00:36:40   is some stuff that I like about them and [TS]

00:36:41   I do think they sort of have like an [TS]

00:36:43   interesting arc 11 interesting aspect of [TS]

00:36:46   it is this angle that he doesn't get [TS]

00:36:47   what he never gets what he's actually [TS]

00:36:49   after until Raiders because and it's not [TS]

00:36:53   obvious it's only after like read the [TS]

00:36:55   actual you know thing at the bottom that [TS]

00:36:58   the beginning of the movie but Temple of [TS]

00:36:59   Doom is a prequel not a sequel right [TS]

00:37:01   takes place a year before Raiders and he [TS]

00:37:03   doesn't get it doesn't end up with those [TS]

00:37:06   stones either you know he never comes [TS]

00:37:08   back with what he's looking for the main [TS]

00:37:11   thing I mean I guess he could have kept [TS]

00:37:13   the stones but he gave it back to the [TS]

00:37:14   the villagers or whatever and then you [TS]

00:37:17   know he's in Raiders and he goes after [TS]

00:37:19   that I'll at the beginning and blocks [TS]

00:37:20   steals it and then he doesn't get to [TS]

00:37:23   keep the ark the government takes it [TS]

00:37:25   away but it's like that's that he went [TS]

00:37:27   and got it for them you know they kind [TS]

00:37:29   of had it in writing get to keep it but [TS]

00:37:30   they got it is like what redeemed him [TS]

00:37:32   and then the next movie it doesn't get [TS]

00:37:34   too greatly there and again no no not [TS]

00:37:37   really no it was an open with the [TS]

00:37:38   granite rocks at the beginning Ross and [TS]

00:37:41   then he when he gets back home and then [TS]

00:37:43   then he has this line races to Marcus I [TS]

00:37:45   got it Marcus [TS]

00:37:46   I got it it's like now because of [TS]

00:37:48   raiders he's a guy who gets the things [TS]

00:37:50   he's after right and then the lesson of [TS]

00:37:53   of two of that movie is supposed to be [TS]

00:37:55   you know where he is dad says let it go [TS]

00:37:58   you know that there's it you know the [TS]

00:38:00   lesson is there some things that are [TS]

00:38:01   more important than getting [TS]

00:38:03   the thing I mean presumably if he hadn't [TS]

00:38:05   listened to his father he would have [TS]

00:38:07   slipped and fallen into the crevice to [TS]

00:38:09   bike by trying to reach that that grill [TS]

00:38:11   that was like a fingertip away but I you [TS]

00:38:14   know but i had to me the more telling [TS]

00:38:16   part is that he got that cross he was [TS]

00:38:17   after in the opening adventure and he [TS]

00:38:19   doesn't get the the one that he doesn't [TS]

00:38:21   get the diamond that he was after he [TS]

00:38:23   doesn't get the idol doesn't get the art [TS]

00:38:26   but now he gets the cross so I you know [TS]

00:38:28   that's interesting you mentioned the [TS]

00:38:30   that he doesn't get the ark me and the [TS]

00:38:32   government gets it and of course there's [TS]

00:38:34   the famous scene at the end with the [TS]

00:38:36   with the warehouse which is one of my [TS]

00:38:38   favorite things in any movie maybe the [TS]

00:38:42   best ending to any movie ever [TS]

00:38:43   yeah uh it's it's okay this is it really [TS]

00:38:46   is the best I mean it's just [TS]

00:38:47   unbelievably good next time you watch it [TS]

00:38:50   they look look at that again this we're [TS]

00:38:51   going to come back to that seen with [TS]

00:38:52   with Harrison Ford and gentlemen Elliot [TS]

00:38:54   up on that stage talking to the [TS]

00:38:56   government men at the beginning and I [TS]

00:38:58   think it's actually right after that the [TS]

00:38:59   government and leaving their they're [TS]

00:39:00   toasting their success at at somebody's [TS]

00:39:03   house in these are or for Marcus's i'm [TS]

00:39:06   not sure which and there's a moment [TS]

00:39:08   where andy says you know and they said [TS]

00:39:12   would they said the university gets it [TS]

00:39:14   the museum gets it when they're done [TS]

00:39:16   with it the ark and one of the great [TS]

00:39:19   moments i think really well played by [TS]

00:39:22   denim Elliot is he sort of make some [TS]

00:39:25   noise and goes of course and i look at [TS]

00:39:29   that scene and I think he knows that [TS]

00:39:31   there's no way the government's going to [TS]

00:39:33   let them keep it and he's kinda lying to [TS]

00:39:35   indy I think I think he's just sort of [TS]

00:39:37   like stringing him along and saying I [TS]

00:39:38   don't want to break this guy's heart but [TS]

00:39:40   what are the chances that the government [TS]

00:39:41   is really going to let us have it and of [TS]

00:39:42   course they don't [TS]

00:39:43   at the end it goes in the it goes in the [TS]

00:39:45   box is being studied by top men top men [TS]

00:39:49   yeah such a great ending all that exists [TS]

00:39:51   that your hero has succeeded and it's [TS]

00:39:54   hard home MacGuffin and and and then it [TS]

00:39:58   gets put in a box to never be spotted [TS]

00:40:00   again extend till they make a fourth [TS]

00:40:02   movie that has an entire scene set in [TS]

00:40:04   the heart Harrower Howard's line reading [TS]

00:40:06   on that is is so good and when you need [TS]

00:40:08   to says who [TS]

00:40:10   your country a great service and we [TS]

00:40:14   trust you found the settlement [TS]

00:40:16   satisfactory for the money situation is [TS]

00:40:19   totally unacceptable gentlemen I guess [TS]

00:40:21   that just about wraps it up [TS]

00:40:23   where is the arch I thought we settled [TS]

00:40:27   that the r is somewhere very safe remove [TS]

00:40:32   the r is a source of unspeakable power [TS]

00:40:35   and it has to be researched and it will [TS]

00:40:38   be assure you dr. Brody back to Jones we [TS]

00:40:42   have top men working on it right now [TS]

00:40:49   top men you know began its spoken by a [TS]

00:40:53   guy who knows the top men [TS]

00:40:56   yeah right like if I'm not right like [TS]

00:40:58   who you raise it [TS]

00:40:59   there's a certainty to that that the [TS]

00:41:02   only guy who actually is a top man who [TS]

00:41:05   top men it's it's just I mean I I think [TS]

00:41:11   about that was thinking about that [TS]

00:41:11   earlier in terms of just overall from [TS]

00:41:15   the first and we talk to you know we [TS]

00:41:17   mentioned several times there are no [TS]

00:41:18   super flu shots in this movie but I [TS]

00:41:20   really think from the first shot you [TS]

00:41:23   know as the paramount logo basically [TS]

00:41:26   gets like cross faded into you know that [TS]

00:41:29   mountain all the way up to the warehouse [TS]

00:41:32   shot at the end like I mean there are [TS]

00:41:34   few movies that have both such an iconic [TS]

00:41:36   opening and an iconic closing and that [TS]

00:41:40   really from start to finish are just all [TS]

00:41:42   like a plus perfect like shots [TS]

00:41:50   so we can't can't go [TS]

00:41:59   we haven't mentioned the music at all oh [TS]

00:42:01   yeah did you were listening earlier to [TS]

00:42:03   die in fact I listened to the entire [TS]

00:42:04   score today just to just to get in the [TS]

00:42:06   right lane and I was thinking about it [TS]

00:42:07   because it occurred to me at one point [TS]

00:42:08   that i actually thought I'd there's a [TS]

00:42:12   queue in another film score by james [TS]

00:42:15   horner which i think is is almost [TS]

00:42:17   clearly an homage to the Williams score [TS]

00:42:20   in the scene where at the very end of [TS]

00:42:23   the scene with the ark there's this [TS]

00:42:25   great like dissonant like you see all [TS]

00:42:27   the spirits coming out of the ark and [TS]

00:42:29   then in one of them comes right up to [TS]

00:42:31   the camera and then you see it basically [TS]

00:42:33   turn into this horrific ghost and the [TS]

00:42:36   music turns all discordant and very [TS]

00:42:38   jarring almost almost reminiscent of the [TS]

00:42:40   the psycho theme by bernard herrmann yet [TS]

00:42:50   [Music] [TS]

00:42:56   and I think that James Horner actually [TS]

00:42:59   has a scene in the movie The Rocketeer [TS]

00:43:02   there is the score to that which also [TS]

00:43:04   involves Nazi Zeppelin lose everyone and [TS]

00:43:08   which a Timothy Dalton villain why [TS]

00:43:10   jetpacks away and then he blows up or [TS]

00:43:12   something and I think that there's a [TS]

00:43:13   scene that looks own very much in the [TS]

00:43:15   shot of it like he's coming right at the [TS]

00:43:17   camera and then you seem sort of turn [TS]

00:43:19   all horrified as you realize he's not [TS]

00:43:21   going to get away and it blows up in the [TS]

00:43:22   music changes and I think that movie [TS]

00:43:24   actually if i recall was also directed [TS]

00:43:26   by a Joe Johnston who I think was [TS]

00:43:29   Spielberg's second unit director on a [TS]

00:43:31   lot of stuff i remember if he worked on [TS]

00:43:33   Raiders as well but dan must everything [TS]

00:43:35   come back to the rocketeer with you [TS]

00:43:37   not everything but many is it is a great [TS]

00:43:42   score it is end and I i hate to keep [TS]

00:43:46   saying the word economical but but the [TS]

00:43:48   core of it it does a lot of different [TS]

00:43:50   things but that core theme medium just [TS]

00:43:52   think that's famous is is great but [TS]

00:43:54   there's a lot of other great stuff [TS]

00:43:55   oh the Ark theme Marion's theme I mean [TS]

00:43:58   it's you know it is advised with the [TS]

00:44:01   Star Wars movies as Williams best score [TS]

00:44:04   i think of all time probably I think I [TS]

00:44:06   liked it better than the star wars [TS]

00:44:07   scores don't say that stuff on it it's [TS]

00:44:11   really you know it's it's I would say [TS]

00:44:13   they're on par with each other they're [TS]

00:44:15   so perfect i think that they really help [TS]

00:44:18   especially in these movies with they [TS]

00:44:21   just feel so right and they're so just [TS]

00:44:24   just emotionally on cue that they make [TS]

00:44:28   the preposterous feel more real right [TS]

00:44:31   it's somehow the way that's the star [TS]

00:44:34   wars the end Star Wars is clearly the [TS]

00:44:35   more out there scenario i mean the whole [TS]

00:44:37   thing is you know laser guns in outer [TS]

00:44:39   space and and stuff but it somehow makes [TS]

00:44:42   this preposterous premise feel real and [TS]

00:44:46   raiders is absolutely got that you know [TS]

00:44:48   there's I don't know it's it's it's just [TS]

00:44:50   a fantastic day and it's great perfect [TS]

00:44:54   music and it's the best music of all [TS]

00:44:56   four movies [TS]

00:44:57   oh yes that's that that's a little true [TS]

00:44:59   i mean i think in it from its a movie [TS]

00:45:01   it's so good in the way that you can [TS]

00:45:04   listen to it from start to finish just [TS]

00:45:06   the score and have the entire it's like [TS]

00:45:08   a story the whole thing is just [TS]

00:45:10   laid out for you and I think it really [TS]

00:45:12   all the q's do such a good job of [TS]

00:45:15   reflecting the various moments I mean [TS]

00:45:18   and punctuating them along with the [TS]

00:45:19   scene changes i'm thinking particularly [TS]

00:45:21   of the the scene towards the end where [TS]

00:45:24   they are sorry in the round most second [TS]

00:45:27   act is where he they get out of the well [TS]

00:45:29   souls and solid comes up its appointed [TS]

00:45:31   they're loading their loading it onto a [TS]

00:45:33   truck and Harrison Ford goes what truck [TS]

00:45:36   and then we have this cut into the into [TS]

00:45:38   the beginning of the chase and that the [TS]

00:45:40   queue there is just as its setting it up [TS]

00:45:42   i think it's just perfect [TS]

00:45:44   india and we have no time if you still [TS]

00:45:47   want the rock is being loaded onto a [TS]

00:45:48   truck for chiral from what truck [TS]

00:46:04   and totally hear that same sort of [TS]

00:46:06   change from this we've we've broken our [TS]

00:46:09   way out of the well souls which has this [TS]

00:46:11   very sort of creepy ominous music into [TS]

00:46:13   this more fast-paced action music and I [TS]

00:46:16   think you know William's manages to run [TS]

00:46:18   pretty much the whole gamut from from [TS]

00:46:20   romance to action and back again in in a [TS]

00:46:24   fantastic score just great [TS]

00:46:26   the the Ark theme gives me the creeps [TS]

00:46:28   even now and the end it and it it [TS]

00:46:30   doesn't even mean just the ark to me [TS]

00:46:32   it's sort of like this kind of ancient [TS]

00:46:34   scary old testament wrath of God kind of [TS]

00:46:38   feeling like don't mess with this it's [TS]

00:46:40   it would be bad right [TS]

00:46:42   uh just it's not for people and it plays [TS]

00:46:45   over solace lying about how perhaps the [TS]

00:46:48   ark was not meant to be possessed by man [TS]

00:46:50   it's like blue it's it's chilling and [TS]

00:46:54   then of course there's the great [TS]

00:46:55   playback in in a temple of doom where he [TS]

00:46:59   sees a picture of the sets at last [TS]

00:47:02   crusade always that last cruise in the [TS]

00:47:03   catacombs I'll guess what it is yeah [TS]

00:47:05   that's right yeah that was just for a [TS]

00:47:06   moment [TS]

00:47:07   yeah it was a great a great little bit [TS]

00:47:09   what is that Ark of the Covenant only [TS]

00:47:11   thing i don't like about it is that and [TS]

00:47:12   they do the same thing in the when it [TS]

00:47:14   goes by and that the crystal skull one [TS]

00:47:17   right when they go by that box they play [TS]

00:47:20   the same thing but both times it's cool [TS]

00:47:23   because I recognize it and you get that [TS]

00:47:25   thrill of being clever and a big enough [TS]

00:47:27   fan to recognize the what's that called [TS]

00:47:30   when they do that it comes from term [TS]

00:47:32   comes from a motif [TS]

00:47:34   yes a motif her you know and then and [TS]

00:47:37   then there's an instant sadness where [TS]

00:47:38   you think this movie sounds good [TS]

00:47:41   yeah yeah there's only the one monkey [TS]

00:47:44   and raiders of the lost ark as opposed [TS]

00:47:45   to the tribe of swinging monkeys and the [TS]

00:47:47   Crystal Skull I maintain that would have [TS]

00:47:49   been a better movie if so like Sean [TS]

00:47:51   Connery's characters afraid of rats [TS]

00:47:53   Indiana Jones afraid of snakes if if [TS]

00:47:55   Sheila boss character had been like [TS]

00:47:56   deathly afraid of monkeys monkeys why'd [TS]

00:47:59   it have to be monkeys like that that to [TS]

00:48:01   me would have allowed that opportunity [TS]

00:48:03   is all about let me tell you it would [TS]

00:48:05   have taken it from a very very low [TS]

00:48:06   rating to a slightly less low ready yeah [TS]

00:48:09   and thank you for reminding me by the [TS]

00:48:11   way that the last crusade has upland in [TS]

00:48:12   it [TS]

00:48:13   indeed of course at that that raises it [TS]

00:48:16   in my estimation [TS]

00:48:17   just there one of the things that's [TS]

00:48:19   interesting about Raiders of the Lost [TS]

00:48:20   Ark is that it was the highly promoted [TS]

00:48:23   collaboration between Steven Spielberg [TS]

00:48:25   and George Lucas George Lucas shares a [TS]

00:48:27   story credit on raiders of the lost ark [TS]

00:48:29   as well as a producer credit he didn't [TS]

00:48:31   write the screenplay and this is back [TS]

00:48:33   i'll say this is back in the days when [TS]

00:48:35   you'd see George Lucas name in the [TS]

00:48:37   credits and you'd be like you George [TS]

00:48:39   Lucas as opposed to an hour it's more [TS]

00:48:41   like a turtle focus but it's interesting [TS]

00:48:43   that this was a collaboration between [TS]

00:48:45   these two figures from the late [TS]

00:48:48   seventies who had incredible success [TS]

00:48:49   with blockbuster pictures and this this [TS]

00:48:52   was I mean talk about you're setting [TS]

00:48:54   yourself up for failure right i mean how [TS]

00:48:56   much hype could you get for a movie that [TS]

00:48:58   was like the return of the great [TS]

00:48:59   adventure with the tagline and Steven [TS]

00:49:01   Spielberg and George Lucas it's Star [TS]

00:49:03   Wars Close Encounters jaws it all [TS]

00:49:05   together in this one thing with Han Solo [TS]

00:49:07   is the star right and you know how high [TS]

00:49:10   the bar do you have to set and yet they [TS]

00:49:12   they pulled it off in fact more more [TS]

00:49:15   than perhaps they ever would again this [TS]

00:49:17   one that they really did hit it out of [TS]

00:49:19   the park in and whatever Lucas [TS]

00:49:20   contributed to it you know it's it's a [TS]

00:49:23   good contribution because this was a [TS]

00:49:24   great collaboration and of course I [TS]

00:49:25   think Lucas tried to block Harrison Ford [TS]

00:49:28   i think at first because he was on [TS]

00:49:31   Selleck for yes Tom Selleck impact [TS]

00:49:33   screen-tested was it was almost the was [TS]

00:49:35   almost heard it was almost Indian Jones [TS]

00:49:37   I think Lucas didn't want to because he [TS]

00:49:39   was already tied into Star Wars there [TS]

00:49:41   like I'm a weekend getaway from that but [TS]

00:49:42   I mean obviously it would have been a [TS]

00:49:44   very different movie with Tom's epic I [TS]

00:49:46   don't even know if it's true it's it [TS]

00:49:48   i've never been able to find it actually [TS]

00:49:50   attributed to and who knows maybe [TS]

00:49:51   somebody else but there's a one of the [TS]

00:49:53   quotes i have from stanley kubrick is a [TS]

00:49:55   ninety-percent of directing is casting [TS]

00:49:57   and I never been i don't even think I've [TS]

00:49:59   so you can't it don't go around quoting [TS]

00:50:01   him on that because i had maybe a [TS]

00:50:03   pocketful but it rings true though that [TS]

00:50:05   it's just the most important part of [TS]

00:50:08   directing a movie is picking the right [TS]

00:50:10   people for the rules [TS]

00:50:11   well when you think about writers you [TS]

00:50:13   you think about not only Harrison Ford [TS]

00:50:15   and Karen Allen but John rhys-davies and [TS]

00:50:19   denim Elliot I mean it has some great [TS]

00:50:21   actors doing some some great work who [TS]

00:50:24   plays Belloc I don't know the guys name [TS]

00:50:26   Pope Paul Freeman paulina and he's great [TS]

00:50:29   he hits it right [TS]

00:50:31   right on going and as John said told the [TS]

00:50:33   guy who plays tote who I cannot name for [TS]

00:50:36   the life of me but is such a fantastic [TS]

00:50:38   bad guy you know and that and you know [TS]

00:50:42   there's anything you need to have a [TS]

00:50:43   claymation character dies at the end but [TS]

00:50:45   there's something to that whole you know [TS]

00:50:46   even picking the another carrier the [TS]

00:50:50   actors who are not necessarily a list [TS]

00:50:51   names but are perfect for those those [TS]

00:50:53   roles that are so important because it's [TS]

00:50:56   so much you know they bring so much to a [TS]

00:50:58   role which may only be a secondary role [TS]

00:51:00   but it somehow became an iconic part [TS]

00:51:03   nonetheless right well I'll say that [TS]

00:51:06   i'll give that to last crusade is I [TS]

00:51:07   think there was really good casting last [TS]

00:51:09   crusade not just Sean Connery but even [TS]

00:51:11   like Julian clever you know yeah there's [TS]

00:51:14   some good [TS]

00:51:15   there's some good actors and in that [TS]

00:51:16   movie too is it here's another good [TS]

00:51:18   thing to say about writer so whenever we [TS]

00:51:20   go on three hours on this we may have to [TS]

00:51:21   do a sequel [TS]

00:51:22   I hope it's better than the raiders [TS]

00:51:24   you'll never be as good I think you can [TS]

00:51:26   argue that then Raiders and is that this [TS]

00:51:29   this goes to the story from Lucas in the [TS]

00:51:31   screenplay and it you know so credit to [TS]

00:51:33   Lucas and and Larry Kasdan but yeah but [TS]

00:51:37   the whole thing everybody is smart like [TS]

00:51:39   there's no like the bad guy wit plot the [TS]

00:51:41   bad guys don't do anything stupid and I [TS]

00:51:44   can't you know I can't say how much that [TS]

00:51:46   is unlike almost every other movie in [TS]

00:51:48   the genre you know and and including the [TS]

00:51:50   other movies in the Indiana junks series [TS]

00:51:52   you know nobody ever does anything [TS]

00:51:53   that's stupid and block it block is is a [TS]

00:51:56   perfect example of it the lock never [TS]

00:51:59   really does anything done Bieber quotes [TS]

00:52:01   gene siskel I think about the about hit [TS]

00:52:03   the complaint about the idiot plot which [TS]

00:52:05   is if your plot has to require somebody [TS]

00:52:06   to do something just outrageously stupid [TS]

00:52:09   that they shouldn't do there's something [TS]

00:52:11   wrong and I don't think I see that in [TS]

00:52:14   Raiders I i agree with you [TS]

00:52:16   alright the way that that Indiana Jones [TS]

00:52:18   pursues the Ark is smart and you know [TS]

00:52:21   sala is smart you know even you know a [TS]

00:52:23   great example of that is is the the [TS]

00:52:26   thing you said where when he first saw [TS]

00:52:28   Marion didn't have thought she was dead [TS]

00:52:30   here's it she's alive and then he thinks [TS]

00:52:33   it through and realizes we can entire [TS]

00:52:35   because they don't know is there right [TS]

00:52:38   it's smart it's like he's you know [TS]

00:52:39   they're I it's like that throughout the [TS]

00:52:42   whole movie the only thing you could [TS]

00:52:44   argue in [TS]

00:52:44   is dumb it's not a character being dumb [TS]

00:52:48   it's just like the only corner they [TS]

00:52:50   painted themselves in story-wise is the [TS]

00:52:53   house ND survive on top of the submarine [TS]

00:52:55   uh-huh that's the one that a one-time in [TS]

00:52:59   the whole movie that they painted [TS]

00:53:00   themselves into a corner [TS]

00:53:02   all they need to do is have a have a [TS]

00:53:03   like you know I assume that there's an [TS]

00:53:05   action scene that we don't see where he [TS]

00:53:07   like overpowers the guy at the hatch and [TS]

00:53:09   and tucks himself in under the hatch and [TS]

00:53:11   there is there's a shot of that I think [TS]

00:53:14   of the filming and but i think it may be [TS]

00:53:16   of a scene that was cut in which he's [TS]

00:53:18   holding onto the periscope and I can [TS]

00:53:21   kind of see why they would cut that like [TS]

00:53:23   he's he's standing on it over like on [TS]

00:53:25   the water and holding onto the periscope [TS]

00:53:26   i believe there may be a cutscene of [TS]

00:53:28   that but yes I can i yeah that is one of [TS]

00:53:31   the sort of like I'd rather an engine he [TS]

00:53:33   fights his way just into the and hides [TS]

00:53:35   in the in the sub maybe they never go [TS]

00:53:37   underwater [TS]

00:53:38   that was my thought you got a sub you [TS]

00:53:39   got to take it down right i mean why do [TS]

00:53:41   you were you the u-boat captain if you [TS]

00:53:42   don't if you're not talking to us to [TS]

00:53:44   vote which they actually say dive the [TS]

00:53:46   u-boat well then here's the thing though [TS]

00:53:48   they weren't they weren't at war yet [TS]

00:53:50   worldwartwo is still years away so it [TS]

00:53:52   wasn't like they needed to to submerge I [TS]

00:53:54   think you can i don't know i don't i [TS]

00:53:56   don't know what standard operating [TS]

00:53:57   procedure is for a for a German sub in [TS]

00:54:00   1936 if they always out under if it's [TS]

00:54:02   more taking the command to dive though [TS]

00:54:03   they do injure in in the bad and i will [TS]

00:54:06   say this the German somebody took high [TS]

00:54:08   school and college German the Germans [TS]

00:54:10   and greater speak high school and [TS]

00:54:12   college camp it's not the best German [TS]

00:54:15   and the Pali boy [TS]

00:54:17   in the comic book app adaptation he and [TS]

00:54:22   I you know who knows i think i think [TS]

00:54:24   that the Marvel guys just got to do that [TS]

00:54:26   on her own but they had him lashing [TS]

00:54:28   himself to the periscope with his whip [TS]

00:54:29   it could be from the screen player or I [TS]

00:54:32   have some some some sketches that we're [TS]

00:54:35   done that we're never shot right either [TS]

00:54:37   the either that's either that's what [TS]

00:54:39   we're supposed to believe in the comic [TS]

00:54:40   book guys exposed force or the [TS]

00:54:41   comic-book guys had the same [TS]

00:54:43   conversation we're having right we got [TS]

00:54:44   it we got to figure out some kind of way [TS]

00:54:46   that he could be on top of a sub for a [TS]

00:54:48   couple you know for this trip [TS]

00:54:50   the the stupidity of villains and how [TS]

00:54:52   and how we don't have a lot of that I [TS]

00:54:53   that one of the things I like about how [TS]

00:54:54   the movie ends is that in the end you [TS]

00:54:57   know you don't defeat the villains [TS]

00:54:58   because of their stupidity they defeat [TS]

00:55:00   themselves really mean it and he doesn't [TS]

00:55:02   win at the end what happens is that the [TS]

00:55:05   not the evil of the Nazis and the greed [TS]

00:55:08   of of the Nazis and a Belloc is what it [TS]

00:55:13   destroys them right and and it is that [TS]

00:55:15   fruit from steven spielberg you know [TS]

00:55:17   Jewish filmmaker making a movie about [TS]

00:55:19   Old Testament stories that starts out [TS]

00:55:22   very with his hero being a non believer [TS]

00:55:24   in the end that's sort of what happens [TS]

00:55:26   at the end of this movie not to get all [TS]

00:55:28   kinda highfalutin about it but in the [TS]

00:55:30   end it's the it's the evil in their [TS]

00:55:33   characters that that lose the day for [TS]

00:55:36   them not something that our heroes [TS]

00:55:38   goodness ducks right our heroes goodness [TS]

00:55:40   is close your eyes right and ride it out [TS]

00:55:42   right [TS]

00:55:43   I like that and and I do think that's [TS]

00:55:45   why it resonates so well and it's it is [TS]

00:55:47   in fact what most action you know [TS]

00:55:50   popcorn movies whatever you want to call [TS]

00:55:51   them you know good guys versus bad guys [TS]

00:55:53   movies implicitly want to argue that the [TS]

00:55:56   good guys going to win because he's good [TS]

00:55:58   and good wins over evil but plot-wise [TS]

00:56:01   it's always the good guy wins because [TS]

00:56:03   the bad guy does something stupid or [TS]

00:56:04   foolish whereas this one it actually is [TS]

00:56:09   the good guy wins simply because it you [TS]

00:56:11   know it comes down to actually being [TS]

00:56:13   good right it's this that right i mean [TS]

00:56:15   because the Nazis them Nazis they get it [TS]

00:56:18   right they get the ark they're ready [TS]

00:56:19   they've sort of one right until that [TS]

00:56:21   point they've taken into the secret [TS]

00:56:23   island but they still pay the price [TS]

00:56:26   so raise lost i guess we liked it i get [TS]

00:56:29   a thumbs up [TS]

00:56:30   well I want to thank both of you John [TS]

00:56:33   and Dan for for joining me and we should [TS]

00:56:35   do this again sometime this was a lot of [TS]

00:56:36   fun we should have a second the second [TS]

00:56:38   one we should be what we talked about [TS]

00:56:39   everything that's wrong with the other [TS]

00:56:40   Indiana Jones movies and that would be a [TS]

00:56:44   sequel worthy of the original right I i [TS]

00:56:47   would have to watch them again now but [TS]

00:56:49   you can seriously you get a wet i think [TS]

00:56:50   we spent like 20 seconds talk about [TS]

00:56:52   what's wrong with raiders of the lost [TS]

00:56:53   ark we could we could spend four hours [TS]

00:56:54   talking about what's wrong with the [TS]

00:56:56   other one [TS]

00:56:56   you know I actually haven't seen temple [TS]

00:56:59   of doom since i saw it like on VHS right [TS]

00:57:01   when it came out on VHS after exercise [TS]

00:57:03   in theory opening is good the open china [TS]

00:57:06   is the first half minute opening I seem [TS]

00:57:08   as happy and I talked about this on the [TS]

00:57:09   phone this podcast last month that I've [TS]

00:57:11   seen the opening on cable and up to the [TS]

00:57:12   point which wich i said i love up to the [TS]

00:57:15   point where they jump out of the plane [TS]

00:57:15   yet it's actually great and I don't and [TS]

00:57:17   there's that moment with a nice trial oj [TS]

00:57:19   and then close the door and latch onto [TS]

00:57:20   the plane right i love that and then [TS]

00:57:22   they did when they jump out so I can you [TS]

00:57:24   know that's an accurate yet you get the [TS]

00:57:26   movie wednesday and Aykroyd not allow [TS]

00:57:28   che but these the the no but he's the [TS]

00:57:30   guy yeah the guy you like gets in the [TS]

00:57:32   booking on the plane [TS]

00:57:33   yeah i'm jumping out of that plane is it [TS]

00:57:36   it is the quality of the whole series [TS]

00:57:39   it used to be up here and I did right [TS]

00:57:42   here as they're jumping out of the plane [TS]

00:57:43   here [TS]

00:57:44   Jericho circuits that and they pass a [TS]

00:57:47   shark on the way that that's the crystal [TS]

00:57:49   shark [TS]

00:57:50   thank you thank you very much mr. screen [TS]

00:57:53   pump yeah that was a lot of fun [TS]

00:57:54   alright that's it [TS]

00:57:59   [Music] [TS]

00:58:15   [Applause] [TS]

00:58:16   [Music] [TS]

00:58:19   we didn't even get to the debate about [TS]

00:58:22   who's better boba fett jango fett so [TS]

00:58:26   we'll have to Jonas grouper argues that [TS]

00:58:29   it's django right my son says you can't [TS]

00:58:31   that's right he's got two guns who [TS]

00:58:34   yeah that's a convincing argument I [TS]

00:58:36   think nothing made me happier in in [TS]

00:58:38   episode 2 then 3 a boba fett backpack [TS]

00:58:41   rocket launcher go off which is a [TS]

00:58:44   references that episode 2 right which is [TS]

00:58:46   that in reference to the the recall [TS]

00:58:48   that's the toy [TS]

00:58:49   yeah because they went much shoots right [TS]

00:58:51   that that class almost enough to make me [TS]

00:58:53   like Jango Fett the best but I I'm i was [TS]

00:58:56   born in the seventies so it's got to be [TS]

00:58:58   boba focus the best you know what the [TS]

00:59:00   universe is one thing I know we're [TS]

00:59:01   talking indiana jones i was just [TS]

00:59:03   watching empire strikes back with with [TS]

00:59:05   my boy the other day and when Luke first [TS]

00:59:08   gets to best been and he's you know Han [TS]

00:59:13   Solo has already been frozen he's been [TS]

00:59:14   wheeled away he's coming down the [TS]

00:59:16   hallway Boba Fett is with those best [TS]

00:59:18   regards and they've got on levitated [TS]

00:59:20   there they're pushing him down the [TS]

00:59:21   hallway [TS]

00:59:21   Luke season duck's back weights and then [TS]

00:59:24   he goes and boba fett notices you had [TS]

00:59:26   you know never moved didn't turn his [TS]

00:59:28   head but of course is both fat he knows [TS]

00:59:30   that Luke Skywalker's down there he's [TS]

00:59:32   there he's waiting he takes a shot at [TS]

00:59:33   him and almost hit him almost shoots him [TS]

00:59:35   right in the face it like hits the wall [TS]

00:59:37   right next to his face [TS]

00:59:38   imagine how this Darth Vader with a [TS]

00:59:40   witness over that would not look at the [TS]

00:59:43   face to go ahead and pay you for for [TS]

00:59:45   Skywalker I paid you for solo right man [TS]

00:59:48   got him [TS]

00:59:48   it's just that all of the what if [TS]

00:59:50   something had gone slightly there who's [TS]

00:59:52   just imagine how pissed are faded set [TS]

00:59:54   this whole thing out [TS]

00:59:55   imagine of people with that she had Luke [TS]

00:59:58   enough it's aight i assume you [TS]

00:59:58   enough it's aight i assume you [TS]

01:00:00   in the robot chicken star wars yes yeah [TS]

01:00:02   John is that that that strikes me as [TS]

01:00:04   being a bunch of guys who have gone [TS]

01:00:07   through everyone if like all of us have [TS]

01:00:09   in Star Wars and then and then it ended [TS]

01:00:11   up animating them which is why i love [TS]

01:00:13   those those two so much is because it is [TS]

01:00:16   everything that I always ask myself Who [TS]

01:00:18   how do the little black boxes on wheels [TS]

01:00:20   get around and who's inside them and the [TS]

01:00:22   answer is there's a there's a mouse with [TS]

01:00:24   the flask of alcohol inside [TS]

01:00:26   also I IRA had an idea for a short film [TS]

01:00:29   called Vader and son here's the here's [TS]

01:00:32   the pitch the pitch is it's it's Luke's [TS]

01:00:38   Luke is let's say two years old what [TS]

01:00:41   maybe one year always gotta be I get [TS]

01:00:42   more like a baby so it'sit's soon after [TS]

01:00:44   the the third movie ended right and and [TS]

01:00:49   you see Vader he's in his little [TS]

01:00:50   meditation chamber and he suddenly [TS]

01:00:53   thinks about like let's and I still [TS]

01:00:55   don't know what the quite the MacGuffin [TS]

01:00:56   is but he thinks is something back home [TS]

01:00:58   on Tatooine from his boyhood maybe it's [TS]

01:00:59   3pl right he decides to go as Darth [TS]

01:01:03   Vader to tattooing to get Threepio and [TS]

01:01:06   boom he finds Luke cut to something you [TS]

01:01:10   know like and Peru saying as he's taken [TS]

01:01:12   away like where's where's hope you want [TS]

01:01:14   cut to the cantina and there's obi-wan [TS]

01:01:17   he's just an alcoholic and that's how he [TS]

01:01:20   knows that it's a wretched hive of scum [TS]

01:01:22   and villainy is that ends up Toby well [TS]

01:01:24   what we want to do that during those 20 [TS]

01:01:26   years right that's it that's what did [TS]

01:01:27   you what did he do I say he was drinking [TS]

01:01:29   right so Vader it takes Luke away and [TS]

01:01:33   take them to the Emperor and the Emperor [TS]

01:01:35   hold him he's a baby and says he can [TS]

01:01:39   destroy me i have foreseen it right and [TS]

01:01:42   then all the sudden spate babybaby [TS]

01:01:44   Lupe's on the Emperor and while the [TS]

01:01:46   Emperor's distracted Vader to cut them [TS]

01:01:48   down and now Vader and rule the galaxy [TS]

01:01:51   as father and son right and he's a [TS]

01:01:53   little baby that that is the [TS]

01:01:55   oscar-winning short all over it [TS]

01:01:57   I think pixar were to do that so baby [TS]

01:02:01   Luke isn't properly diapered now he's [TS]

01:02:04   just Vader Vader obviously has no idea [TS]

01:02:06   about how to be a father so he's just [TS]

01:02:08   got a naked baby rhino diaper anything [TS]

01:02:10   so that you can just spray right on the [TS]

01:02:11   Emperor or maybe like it's like a bad [TS]

01:02:13   sadly diaper diaper that falls down [TS]

01:02:15   while the Emperor's holding like I [TS]

01:02:16   imagine the Emperor holding I'm sorted [TS]

01:02:18   by the pits like in front of them you [TS]

01:02:20   know from what he doesn't know like [TS]

01:02:22   chief of protocol of the Empire would be [TS]

01:02:24   like Oh Emperor was just looking at the [TS]

01:02:26   baby and he says that he can destroy me [TS]

01:02:28   i have foreseen it and he does because [TS]

01:02:31   it's while he's distracted better cut [TS]

01:02:33   them down [TS]

01:02:35   out of the mouths of babes not the [TS]

01:02:38   mouths friend i drive-a kids I don't [TS]

01:02:42   know how that works it could be it up on [TS]

01:02:45   on on the Emperor to I just think there [TS]

01:02:47   would be a great dad little hardcore [TS]

01:02:50   certainly a lot of hardware be a lot of [TS]

01:02:52   fun i think you have a lot of fun i mean [TS]

01:02:54   yeah i probably pretty strict but need [TS]

01:02:58   to be a lot of upside to it you have [TS]

01:03:00   failed me for the last time you did not [TS]

01:03:03   take out the garbage [TS]

01:03:05   I find your lack of bathroom hygiene [TS]

01:03:07   disturbing great look like imagine this [TS]

01:03:09   imagine your looks right so now it's [TS]

01:03:11   that happens when Lucas like what you [TS]

01:03:13   know there's nine months old or [TS]

01:03:14   something like that now you know couple [TS]

01:03:15   years later Luke's in kindergarten now [TS]

01:03:17   imagine your loops kindergarten teacher [TS]

01:03:19   and later cums in a parent-teacher it's [TS]

01:03:23   too much homework they shouldn't have [TS]

01:03:24   homework in kindergarten right [TS]

01:03:29   give them a little force around the neck [TS]

01:03:32   it's an old Jedi mind trick [TS]

01:03:37   this has been the incomparable podcast [TS]

01:03:44   yes it is finally over there is exactly [TS]

01:03:48   in comfortable dot-com [TS]

01:03:54   [Music] [TS]
