The Incomparable

276: Don`t Drink the Bacta Tea

the Intolerable number 276 December 2015 [TS]

welcome back everybody to be [TS]

uncomfortable i'm your host Jason smell [TS]

we as we record this we are weak away [TS]

from the release of star wars the force [TS]

awakens and this could be a little [TS]

change of pace this episode little break [TS]

we did a couple holiday episodes and of [TS]

course I imagine that in the next couple [TS]

of weeks are our episodes are going to [TS]

be devoted to the force awakens but i [TS]

wanted to take that this moment in [TS]

between to talk about the anticipation [TS]

and our expectations a little bit and [TS]

what our plans are and and just just set [TS]

the stage a little bit for the Star Wars [TS]

revival that is to come [TS]

so let me introduce the three people who [TS]

i would i would expect you would expect [TS]

to be here wherever we're talking about [TS]

Star Wars the people who have been on I [TS]

believe essentially all our star wars [TS]

episodes first coming to her coming to [TS]

hear from her sickbed just just revive [TS]

temporarily before retreating there and [TS]

and i'm very glad that she could could [TS]

make it serenity Caldwell I hi i just [TS]

came out of a back to thank to come [TS]

podcast for 45 minutes every record out [TS]

Jason couldn't that's girl you got back [TS]

to take come on that's why it's not that [TS]

serious which has to be some liquid [TS]

while it's dr. droid goes if I could [TS]

just have some tea like back to sac did [TS]

you also the back to t they just heat up [TS]

the stuff from the from the tank it's [TS]

not no don't drink that was the idea is [TS]

that it's like Andy 30 John syracuse you [TS]

heard him of course he's here hi hope [TS]

we're not going to talk about the [TS]

trailer i didn't watch know that would [TS]

be crazy to be wrong [TS]

we can talk about why you didn't watch [TS]

it maybe yeah and a moron hi [TS]

this deal is getting worse all the time [TS]

it is it is well how bad is this deal i [TS]

  looked it up [TS]

we did our flash podcast about disney [TS]

announcing the new Star Wars trilogy [TS]

three years ago wow it was October [TS]

  thirty-first halloween 2012 [TS]

remember it it was a Thursday warm day [TS]

up but episode 214 this is 276 that is [TS]

how long it's been it's been a long time [TS]

i require an outrageous and once we've [TS]

seen the movie and talked about it did [TS]

we just shut down the podcast are we [TS]

done that it was probably no more star [TS]

wars that i heard they're gonna make a [TS]

new one of these every year it's a rumor [TS]

service its gonna be like next taking [TS]

over apple from the inside this will [TS]

slowly become a star wars' podcast the [TS]

star the star wars a minute will never [TS]

be able to catch up [TS]

never ever they will never be able to do [TS]

it and then in may of 2014 [TS]

we talked about casting and then it [TS]

  Thanksgiving of 2014 [TS]

we got the teaser trailer and then of [TS]

course this year they released the the [TS]

final trailer and everybody asked us if [TS]

one final except for like additional [TS]

scenes that kept getting added into [TS]

international versions of the trailers [TS]

which is also pretty funny and everybody [TS]

asks what we're going to do a trailer [TS]

analysis episode which sort of you know [TS]

we did it a couple of times why would [TS]

why would we not do it again and the [TS]

answer was no because a Miss Jones [TS]

siracusa has decided to put himself in a [TS]

bubble as much as possible and not be [TS]

spoiled any further about what's going [TS]

on how's that been going John going [TS]

pretty well actually like a set of a [TS]

bunch of filters on Twitter and my [TS]

eyeballs are really good filter so if I [TS]

see like anything related to star wars [TS]

whether it be a picture or word or [TS]

whatever I just scrolled off the screen [TS]

before I can read it [TS]

do you have somebody to vent like if [TS]

your kids come in to talk to you is [TS]

there someone to vent their topics [TS]

before because you know they can go [TS]

off-book sometimes and I think I've come [TS]

and found one of the computers in the [TS]

house showing like you that trailer [TS]

viewed on YouTube you know my son has [TS]

hasn't he knows enough not to talk to me [TS]

about it you may have AG knots [TS]

you should check nasty and say yeah but [TS]

it works out pretty well like the thing [TS]

that Jason just mentioned that they had [TS]

been adding scenes for international I [TS]

didn't know that that's how well my [TS]

filter is working now John you could [TS]

guess that that's like oh the trailer [TS]

has been released in japan and it has an [TS]

extra see me yeah of course it does of [TS]

course it's surprise after we watch the [TS]

movie i will tell you the few things [TS]

  that [TS]

it leaked through my filter that i may [TS]

or may not know I don't even say them [TS]

now but my little girl BBS John is [TS]

actually not sure if this movie is [TS]

longer than the two minutes of footage [TS]

that we've seen JJ Abrams pranking us [TS]

  all [TS]

that's what's happening we just go in [TS]

the theater industry back guarantee if [TS]

the movie is cancelled somebody tell me [TS]

well i think i think that there's great [TS]

i mean look Ren and i spent a we had a [TS]

long I message thread on the night that [TS]

the full trailer came out so long where [TS]

we were we almost just recorded that [TS]

just like this just do a do a little [TS]

facetime chat and require dramatic [TS]

reading of your im's good we could I [TS]

gotta check the transcript and we have [TS]

theories all that and it was very [TS]

exciting but what I what I liked about [TS]

it was that although I've seen those [TS]

scenes i think i think JJ Abrams is done [TS]

a good job because although with some [TS]

analysis you can probably get a better [TS]

idea of the shape of the film i really [TS]

  don't know I i if there's enough there [TS]

and enough that they may have withheld [TS]

that i really have no idea what this [TS]

what this film is is about other than [TS]

the sort of broad strokes that we got [TS]

essentially from the casting and I like [TS]

that I thought I like feeling even [TS]

though I've seen more of it than you [TS]

have John I like that idea that I'm not [TS]

isolated that with doctor who this year [TS]

I didn't go to the gala freebase spoiler [TS]

forum and I stayed away the whole time [TS]

and it was kind of delightful in in its [TS]

way to to not have any spoilers and not [TS]

know what's coming and just let it let [TS]

it happen and I I'm the real question is [TS]

will any of us be able to get other than [TS]

perhaps John who may be sealed in a [TS]

mayonnaise go in his closet are we going [TS]

to be able to avoid the last few days [TS]

when people start to see it in [TS]

screenings and things and are we going [TS]

to try to avoid damn you're gonna try to [TS]

avoid yeah okay I almost didn't watch [TS]

the last trailer and eventually broke [TS]

down and did it's because you're weak i [TS]

am it's true i fell to the dark side i [TS]

think the the tricky thing you know part [TS]

of the reason for not watching this is [TS]

part of it is just not wanting to be [TS]

spoiled on the movie itself but there's [TS]

also sort of that larger meta picture of [TS]

now the idea that you might go in and [TS]

see a new star wars movie for the first [TS]

time and have it not suck its kind of [TS]

you know novel for the last [TS]

30 odd years so I think you know there's [TS]

also a bit of that hesitancy like a half [TS]

i see anything else I might start [TS]

doubting whether or not you know may [TS]

prejudice myself so I'm gonna try my [TS]

darnedest to not find out anything and [TS]

already I've I'm sure I've seen more [TS]

than i would like to though nothing like [TS]

you just and I don't think there's [TS]

anything that we like particularly [TS]

compromise it's just that every [TS]

additional little seed gets you thinking [TS]

yeah and that's the for me that's always [TS]

the danger is you know being someone who [TS]

watches a lot of movies reads a lot of [TS]

books and sort of writes books works and [TS]

you know look at narrative structures [TS]

  things like that [TS]

I I start feeling like a helmet can I [TS]

put these puzzle pieces together and go [TS]

away brain go away brain to go do [TS]

something about you take the settings in [TS]

the trailer right and you could try to [TS]

make an order out of them and that's [TS]

that moment where you're like I kind of [TS]

don't want to do that exact you want to [TS]

leave that alone you don't you don't [TS]

want to explore into that dark crevices [TS]

i mean i think the the majority the vast [TS]

majority of the trailer scenes i think [TS]

are more character building then they [TS]

are necessarily story building which I [TS]

really appreciate because I don't really [TS]

have an idea of how the Ark of the movie [TS]

is going to go i know that there's you [TS]

know planet a-and planet be because they [TS]

look different and God forbid star wars [TS]

as a planet that looks the same or that [TS]

doesn't look the same the entire planet [TS]

over it has different seasons so I know [TS]

they're probably multiple planets in the [TS]

movie but ultimately I think what [TS]

they've done with the what they've done [TS]

with the trailers very much is showcased [TS]

the characters that are going to be [TS]

involved in this and really humanize the [TS]

characters and I think above all else [TS]

like I could piece together i could try [TS]

and piece together stories and I could [TS]

put my own hopes and dreams for certain [TS]

characters prey on my in in my my brain [TS]

but i think that the biggest sort of [TS]

success that in my opinion that JayJay's [TS]

had with the with the trailers has been [TS]

like hey remember those those three [TS]

movies that sort of looked like Star [TS]

Wars but there was no characterization [TS]

at all and the characters were [TS]

  essentially cardboard cutouts we're [TS]

going to give you like seven or eight [TS]

  trailers including the International [TS]

spots and the and the television [TS]

colors that that show hey this movie is [TS]

essentially nothing but characters and [TS]

their good characters and they have [TS]

depth and personality and wisecracks [TS]

entertainment weekly to the story that [TS]

had something that I thought was [TS]

interesting which are i think is the [TS]

corporate explanation of what they're [TS]

doing which is I think it was JJ Abrams [TS]

said when we thought about what we [TS]

wanted to do that we want what we want [TS]

to do is go back to the original trilogy [TS]

and recapture how people felt about that [TS]

and I thought that was the kindest way [TS]

possible to say forget about them [TS]

student the the prequels son forget [TS]

  about them [TS]

we're not going to deny that they exist [TS]

but our goal is to not do them but [TS]

that's basically what they were saying [TS]

and i think that i think that the a lot [TS]

of the sands labor materials like hey [TS]

remember the things you liked about Star [TS]

Wars that's what this movie is it's the [TS]

things you like about the one star wars [TS]

thing I've been doing lately is a mostly [TS]

watching my son play star wars [TS]

battlefront which is the rare in modern [TS]

day star wars game that absolutely [TS]

pretends the prequels do not exist [TS]

I mean basically after the prequels [TS]

every game with a star wars property had [TS]

to at least if not have right frequent [TS]

based game had to like include [TS]

characters or ships or settings or you [TS]

notes or just some acknowledgement of [TS]

those movies existing had defined things [TS]

in the star wars universe before the [TS]

parade was obviously all the game's [TS]

  original trilogy games instance [TS]

variables came out it was podracer this [TS]

and moving droid armies around that and [TS]

star wars battlefront here is this [TS]

modern console game i did just looks and [TS]

feels and sounds like the original [TS]

trilogy 100-percent and as far as I'm [TS]

aware there's absolutely nothing in the [TS]

game acknowledge those movies exist you [TS]

know Jason interesting you point out you [TS]

know JJ Abrams talking about this maybe [TS]

sort of the corporate line but i think [TS]

what we are you know realizing from this [TS]

is that this is possibly the file [TS]

certainly the first time in 30 years but [TS]

maybe the first time ever that a Star [TS]

Wars movie has been made by a star wars [TS]

fan because I think we can all agree in [TS]

light of this recent conference George [TS]

Lucas isn't really a star wars fan right [TS]

i mean definitely didn't that's fine but [TS]

he's not not a fan in the way that the [TS]

  people who can [TS]

assume that were a fan and so that's an [TS]

  entirely different perspective because [TS]

that is the perspective that the most of [TS]

the rest of us are coming up you know [TS]

coming in with so I i think you know JJ [TS]

Abrams I'm sure probably felt the way [TS]

many of us did when the prequels came [TS]

out and is probably just as sort of hell [TS]

bent on not replicating that experience [TS]

so you know he's sort of in our corner i [TS]

guess you could say I think that's [TS]

driving when you look like what Lucas [TS]

has been he's pretty di I feel like he's [TS]

got his billions of dollars and he [TS]

should probably just shut up and not [TS]

talk about Star Wars anymore but yet [TS]

every now and then he in the last month [TS]

he said these things that has just yeah [TS]

that just could just continue with the [TS]

very it's very clear that George Lucas [TS]

does not think Star Wars is what [TS]

everybody who loves it thinks it is [TS]

which explains a lot about the prequels [TS]

and and I think the clincher is when [TS]

  asked [TS]

now that he's seen the force awakens [TS]

which he hadn't seen until the last week [TS]

when asked about it he said I think the [TS]

fans are going to love it it's very much [TS]

the kind of movie they've been looking [TS]

for and I i love that quote because it [TS]

puts him at opposition with the fans [TS]

which is exactly the right place for him [TS]

to be and and you're right JJ Abrams is [TS]

a star wars fan and the people really [TS]

the people making this movie r star wars [TS]

fans and and we've seen with some other [TS]

some other stuff like that like the JJ [TS]

abrams star track who's writers were [TS]

were start to start her fans with doctor [TS]

who read relaunch that that's what i was [TS]

going to bring up the dangers of this [TS]

entrance to think like the doctor who [TS]

that the relaunch of doctor who with [TS]

Russell T Davies has a big goof and [TS]

  doing doctor who [TS]

it had good aspects of it but I think if [TS]

there was also it also had bad aspects [TS]

where like it not gonna say it's like [TS]

fan fiction but where it says you know i [TS]

said with the Daleks in the Cybermen [TS]

haven't like a rap battle that was [TS]

pretty much fanfiction like you can you [TS]

can be in too deep and I here here i am [TS]

in my little bubble of trying to not [TS]

know things and I've actually what i [TS]

found is it's kind of leading me [TS]

speaking of the dark side toward towards [TS]

like a I'm like going to the cave on [TS]

Dagobah like solid thinking we would you [TS]

  bring with you I'm [TS]

having trouble holding onto the [TS]

possibility that I could like this movie [TS]

more than I like to be the recent Star [TS]

Trek movies not Star Wars like I'm not [TS]

even like oh you see I'm saying am I [TS]

even gonna like this movie as much as I [TS]

like to read i'm not even a big star [TS]

trek fan and I didn't like you know that [TS]

movies are fun and like i like is i had [TS]

the best I can help for this that I'm [TS]

gonna go to Star Wars movie and best [TS]

case scenario i'll come out gone [TS]

that was a fun movie which is exactly [TS]

what I thought after the day's rooms the [TS]

to start movies they were funny movie [TS]

every time I see them again on TV and [TS]

like these are fun these are nice but [TS]

then i say is that is that all i can [TS]

expect out of a Star Wars movie so I [TS]

don't know I'm a little bit fearful of a [TS]

Star Wars movie by a plan and i'm trying [TS]

to think back to like the other aspect [TS]

was like is there any piece of media [TS]

that is it going to feel the way started [TS]

obviously not cuz resource moves me [TS]

younger and their formative and so on [TS]

and so forth what is the most profound [TS]

media experience that I've had in the [TS]

past several years as an adult and I [TS]

have trouble thinking of what those [TS]

might be I mean most recent memory i [TS]

guess i like the best thing i've seen in [TS]

moving pictures like this past year is [TS]

probably something like mr. robot which [TS]

really surprised me and i found really [TS]

intriguing and interesting but it's also [TS]

very weird not like Star Wars at all so [TS]

like whatever your answers that like [TS]

what have you seen your brother movie or [TS]

TV in your adult life that has come [TS]

close to being as important to you as [TS]

you know things that you've seen your [TS]

formative your road was pretty [TS]

impressive to me it's still sticking [TS]

with me which is impressive given that [TS]

it's been almost a year i would agree [TS]

with mr. robot better that was the one [TS]

that sort of came to me off the top of [TS]

  my head [TS]

moviesmovies you went into expecting or [TS]

media you went into expecting something [TS]

completely different than what you [TS]

actually came out with our time together [TS]

movies that are sort of in that same [TS]

vein I mean I could think of like you i [TS]

can make movies that i went into and [TS]

came out thinking hey that was a really [TS]

fun movie and I can think of movies that [TS]

i went in and went into and came out [TS]

thinking hey that was a really good [TS]

movie and you know the latter case would [TS]

be something like I saw spotlight [TS]

recently which is about the Boston Globe [TS]

uncovering the the Catholic Church [TS]

scandal here in Boston great movie [TS]

not exactly kind of the star wars vain i [TS]

actually think this thing that's closest [TS]

in my mind is reading the expanse books [TS]

i actually I really love this one [TS]

I mean for books that are you know 500 [TS]

600 pages I just devoured those and they [TS]

to me they read is very cinematic so I'm [TS]

looking forward to that being translated [TS]

the screen but again that's it feels a [TS]

little too close in some ways because [TS]

it's like it's almost like riding on [TS]

Star Wars coattails to a certain extent [TS]

you know space adventure and and i don't [TS]

know i think you're right John that the [TS]

problem being that not only is this [TS]

where these formative and things that we [TS]

saw you know as a as young as young [TS]

people but also they were you know kind [TS]

of the revolutionary in their own way [TS]

right like in the context of the cinema [TS]

that was going on there so it's it's a [TS]

lot of lot of boxes to check to to find [TS]

something that appeals to you at that [TS]

age that also causes such a big seismic [TS]

shift in the way that things are done i [TS]

think actually the closest thing is sort [TS]

of a media experience in some ways the [TS]

the marvel cinematic universe and the [TS]

fact that they've created this huge like [TS]

just like huge Hydra like technical [TS]

property that crosses all these [TS]

different genres and different types of [TS]

media is just utterly unlike anything [TS]

that i have seen before in any way as [TS]

star star wars certainly gets the [TS]

closest in that way but even it was [TS]

fairly limited compared to the MCU which [TS]

seems to have all these different [TS]

properties everywhere on TV you know in [TS]

movies on netflix direct TV series some [TS]

comic books all of that it's just it's a [TS]

its enormous undertaking and i don't [TS]

think i would have been possible without [TS]

star wars of success but that's where [TS]

the closest i can think of something [TS]

that is just kind of taken on a life of [TS]

its own criticized one movie to take [TS]

  their place [TS]

haha MCU is definitely a feat and that [TS]

definitely I think right off of the [TS]

previous and prior success of Star Wars [TS]

  I don't know it's and it's it's an [TS]

interesting question to think about i [TS]

think for a fury road was a good example [TS]

because you wrote is not new like oh if [TS]

you're going to do something no movie [TS]

has ever done before because they're [TS]

been mad max moves before and I think [TS]

nothing in fury road was particularly [TS]

groundbreaking terms of the boundary it [TS]

was just done really well and distilled [TS]

  down to it [TS]

essence and the reason it stood out so [TS]

much is because modern movies feel like [TS]

they have to have all these particular [TS]

elements and sort of a feeling and the [TS]

paces ferry road is like cut out all [TS]

that distill it down to this very [TS]

concentrated form of a particular thing [TS]

that had existed in the past that were [TS]

all kind of like had our help [TS]

blonde back in the theater because like [TS]

oh yeah that I remember that and this is [TS]

a really good example of that and I [TS]

haven't seen a movie like this in a long [TS]

time and it you know and thatthat's what [TS]

stood out to me that like I think that [TS]

probably road did was maybe the most [TS]

affecting theater experience I've had in [TS]

awhile but because it was so pure and [TS]

you know so primal it doesn't quite fall [TS]

into the same category as me as a movie [TS]

that just like really stick with sticks [TS]

with being because I I you know I'm [TS]

gonna watch that movie for years and [TS]

years i'm going to keep it in my [TS]

collection i'm going to treasure it [TS]

doesn't feel like that to me it doesn't [TS]

stick in your mind the same way but it [TS]

does it's funny to me because fury road [TS]

kind of feels like the Orson Welles of [TS]

  sci-fi movies where it's just it's it's [TS]

such a great its impeccably built [TS]

science fiction film um and it just it [TS]

hits all of the buttons but it doesn't [TS]

you know i'm i'm picturing you know the [TS]

thing that that star wars really did for [TS]

me is a kid is it gave me something to [TS]

identify with and something to strive [TS]

towards in a strange way and it's like I [TS]

would you know I built God knows how [TS]

many cardboard spaceships from age 72 [TS]

age 15 and I can't imagine building [TS]

cardboard war rigs to this to the same [TS]

extent yeah I mean I think about it and [TS]

like if if we're talking about films in [TS]

particular that affect me is like I I [TS]

would categorize some certain pixar [TS]

  films in that category [TS]

I know you know Wally is not the most [TS]

not the not the best pixar film but [TS]

definitely would is very affecting and [TS]

it's something that I go back to a lot [TS]

and now I feel like I saw when I was old [TS]

enough to both appreciate it as a as a [TS]

film as well as you know it I wouldn't [TS]

consider that a formative because it [TS]

came out past college I don't know it's [TS]

I think that bringing up animation that [TS]

  remind [TS]

me if I had to pick a movie that I saw [TS]

on scene in my adult life not seen in my [TS]

adolescence formative years that is [TS]

really stuck with me to the green stars [TS]

have I don't have to go through the [TS]

Miyazaki's and so yeah I was gonna say [TS]

yeah I think about those a lot [TS]

they really stuck with me I do watch it [TS]

over and over again i do treasure them [TS]

in the same way that I try to star wars [TS]

what what I'm getting at is like is it [TS]

even possible because a lot of the [TS]

criticism is like there is no movie that [TS]

you can never see that is going to be as [TS]

important to you as Star Wars was two [TS]

people who were you know mostly mine [TS]

Jason hbu guys two or there's no music [TS]

ever gonna hear that's that's gonna [TS]

affect you as much as the music and [TS]

adolescents and I just don't think [TS]

that's true because a lot of miyazaki [TS]

wasn't even made until I was completely [TS]

an adult and it's really important to me [TS]

and really you know knock my socks off [TS]

and i keep going back to us I believe it [TS]

is possible i'm trying to come to become [TS]

okay with not watching any of the stuff [TS]

related to star wars is am I gonna be [TS]

okay if the star wars movie comes out [TS]

and it's not like Miyazaki's to me but [TS]

it's merely a good movie in the same way [TS]

like for me that I enjoyed the new star [TS]

trek movies or did you know that you [TS]

might enjoy a good you know [TS]

Marvel Cinematic Universe movie we okay [TS]

with that if it comes out and it does [TS]

that like obviously like oh it's better [TS]

than the prequels yeah it's still better [TS]

than the prequels right like I mean we [TS]

had the extremes i guess is the way you [TS]

can put it is like we've we've seen what [TS]

happens when everything is firing on all [TS]

cylinders and working and is just sort [TS]

of you know genius level stuff and we've [TS]

seen the other end where it's just [TS]

garbage and so chances are it probably [TS]

will be somewhere in between right and [TS]

you are we okay with that [TS]

I think I'm okay with that I mean there [TS]

have been enough Star Wars properties [TS]

that i have certainly enough stars [TS]

properties that I've read that were [TS]

terrible and i read it because hey more [TS]

star worse I've you know Chewbacca dying [TS]

i can i'm glad that's not canon anymore [TS]

because you know I I could have I could [TS]

easily erase that from my memory but I'm [TS]

you know I mean I stuck with the clone [TS]

wars despite the fact that some of the [TS]

early episodes are rough going and you [TS]

get a lot of really you know you you you [TS]

get rewarded for that there's some great [TS]

moments in clone wars in Star Wars [TS]

rebels is a fantastic show and i don't [TS]

think i would have given that a chance [TS]

originally had I not seen clone wars and [TS]

I kind of feel like if it's if it's [TS]

  anything even remove [TS]

Lee in that vein where it's like yet if [TS]

I'm having fun and it gives me glimmers [TS]

of the of the feeling like if it puts a [TS]

smile on my face and it it doesn't [TS]

necessarily i don't think it necessarily [TS]

has to be brand-new nostalgia like [TS]

instant nostalgia it doesn't have to be [TS]

a groundbreaking phone and it doesn't [TS]

have to at least for me be you know the [TS]

end-all-be-all Star Wars movies if I saw [TS]

Star Wars movie it was better than [TS]

Empire i think i would have to question [TS]

my entire life so I I feel like I'm okay [TS]

with it you know i'm ok with it just [TS]

settling into the pantheon as this is a [TS]

really good piece of Star Wars lore that [TS]

once you've reached average watch the [TS]

original trilogy this is what you should [TS]

see next because this you know carries [TS]

on the story and really interesting [TS]

things happen I would be okay with that [TS]

and as a side note it looks like we're [TS]

going to get a female protagonist you [TS]

know just guessing here hypothetically [TS]

but it looks like we're gonna get a [TS]

female protagonist in Star Wars which is [TS]

pretty darn exciting regardless and I'm [TS]

just like I'm i'm really looking forward [TS]

  to that [TS]

let me take a break to tell you about [TS]

our sponsor its Howell dot FM that's [TS]

right how is a new app and website that [TS]

changes the way you think about podcast [TS]

it's a lot like Netflix except for [TS]

podcasts when you subscribe to how [TS]

premium you get exclusive access to [TS]

dozens of original miniseries audio [TS]

documentaries and comedy albums plus all [TS]

the archives from WTF with marc maron [TS]

and all the ear world shows like comedy [TS]

bang bang and how did this get made the [TS]

house original miniseries are truly [TS]

unique the cannon commentaries features [TS]

film critics and host of the cannon [TS]

podcast amy nicholson and devin faraci [TS]

they provide their own commentary tracks [TS]

for movies the listeners have voted into [TS]

the cannon episode one might be the most [TS]

contentious commentary track ever Amy [TS]

and Devin take on goodfellas that's [TS]

totally in the canon by the way and then [TS]

  there's super-ego forgotten classics [TS]

this is a comedy podcast where the [TS]

people from super ego which is another [TS]

podcast improvise a famous work of [TS]

  fiction [TS]

ok improvising a work of fiction it's an [TS]

  interesting idea [TS]

wait for it they are not familiar with [TS]

  that worked [TS]

not at all they get the title the first [TS]

and last lines and the names of the [TS]

characters and the rest is up to them so [TS]

the first episode of that it's the Red [TS]

Badge of Courage a book that I hate and [TS]

it's ridiculous and that's all the [TS]

better i think that the super-ego [TS]

forgotten classics version is ridiculous [TS]

it can't be worse than the original [TS]

sorry to Stephen Crane fans out there so [TS]

anyway how that FM has so much the [TS]

originals and the archive material like [TS]

Netflix for podcast you can get access [TS]

the promo code create your account on [TS]

the web at how about mm that's howw l [TS]

dot FM and Inter code smell at checkout [TS]

that's howw l dot FM use promo code [TS]

smell thank you to hold on FM for [TS]

sponsoring the incomparable one of the [TS]

questions we have to ask is what is [TS]

disney doing here because you Disney [TS]

bought lucasfilm for billions of dollars [TS]

several billion dollars and you know [TS]

they're not buying this for a nostalgia [TS]

trip right there buying this to be one [TS]

of these eternal franchise properties [TS]

that appeals to young and old alike [TS]

right and the idea is so that's not what [TS]

Star Wars has been right when Star Wars [TS]

came out it's not just that we were [TS]

young or not born yet but that they were [TS]

singular those first movies were all of [TS]

Star Wars and yeah there were some [TS]

ancillary stuff but it was early and now [TS]

for Star Wars to be what you know to [TS]

  make back [TS]

disney's investment it needs to be [TS]

franchise it needs to be a movie series [TS]

that with a new movie every year and be [TS]

you know what a modern and TV spin-offs [TS]

and all these things that that star wars [TS]

needs to be so it's never gonna be the [TS]

same but i do think that disney one star [TS]

wars to be for everybody and and so even [TS]

if we don't even know what we get is [TS]

different from seeing the original [TS]

movies and it's more like you know a [TS]

little bit it just us being happy that [TS]

we're playing in that world and people [TS]

are ripping off of the things that we [TS]

know by heart from those other movies [TS]

like watching a band that we loved [TS]

from 20 years ago or for some of us on [TS]

this conversation 10 years ago you know [TS]

along to when we were kids [TS]

um and that that will be good for us but [TS]

I think that's not good enough for [TS]

disney and I think that's the other part [TS]

of what's being crafted here is they [TS]

want this to be something that I a [TS]

teenager would really like and that a [TS]

ten-year-old would would really like and [TS]

buy the toys for and all of those things [TS]

and become a lifelong star wars fan too [TS]

and that's all that's a lot to ask and [TS]

it may be unreasonable and the net [TS]

result may be that it is something like [TS]

like like John said about Marvel movies [TS]

or star trek movies where you come out [TS]

of the theater as a jaded adult and [TS]

you're like yeah that was a fine piece [TS]

of of entertainment but not not life [TS]

changing it for us but i would say the [TS]

Disney would succeed and and and [TS]

Lucasfilm would would succeed if we came [TS]

  out liking it [TS]

feeling better about the franchise as a [TS]

whole getting you know that warm glow of [TS]

things that we recognized and loved [TS]

being playback for us a little bit in [TS]

new ways and that you know the other [TS]

part of this gets fulfilled which is [TS]

that you know the kids want to buy the [TS]

toys & and play and and no more about [TS]

Star Wars well and part of the other [TS]

sort of ingredient there is that tastes [TS]

have changed as well right I mean [TS]

because of what star wars didn't because [TS]

of all the other media that we've [TS]

experienced over the last you know 10 or [TS]

20 years 30 years etc we all have [TS]

different expectations for movies now so [TS]

you know in some ways putting up the [TS]

star trek movies in the Marvel movies is [TS]

a good barometer because it is kind of [TS]

you know those are attempts to sort of [TS]

distill that like this is the experience [TS]

we want to sell to everybody into like a [TS]

concrete little package that's like it's [TS]

got everything it's got action it's got [TS]

adventure it's got outer space [TS]

you know and in the appeals to everybody [TS]

and so the formula and and you know [TS]

ingredients of moviemaking have changed [TS]

in some ways compared to you know back [TS]

in 1977 where a nobody was making things [TS]

in quite that quite that packaged a [TS]

format that point and so moviemaking has [TS]

been home to this risky perfect engine [TS]

of commercialism and so I think you know [TS]

  in some ways to [TS]

that means that everything sort of [TS]

levels out as we go because our [TS]

expectations lower and the movies you [TS]

know maybe get a little bit better but [TS]

everything sort of tends towards that [TS]

middle ground I i don't know but i do [TS]

i'm not sure maybe maybe some you know [TS]

kids some seven-year-olds gonna walk out [TS]

of this movie and you know not having [TS]

seen any other Star Wars movies and [TS]

their eyes are going to be opened in [TS]

this is going to have the effect on them [TS]

that it had on offs back then but yeah [TS]

it's it's hard to tell because you can't [TS]

sort of really can't run the experiment [TS]

again right now the franchise that [TS]

actually reminds me the most of sort of [TS]

this this reinvention is a little bit [TS]

doctor who you think about you know I i [TS]

ended up watching old doctor who but not [TS]

until long after i had discovered the [TS]

new episodes and I became a fan solely [TS]

from the new episodes and then and that [TS]

new world building and since then i've [TS]

gone back and I've been like oh this is [TS]

why people loved it so much you know in [TS]

the past and then also been able to [TS]

enjoy the newer stuff from the new [TS]

doctors and and emphasized with all of [TS]

that and I I feel like there is a great [TS]

potential for if Disney does this right [TS]

and all indications seem to to point [TS]

toward yes they are in fact doing this [TS]

right and there is you know potential [TS]

here we could be looking at that and I [TS]

mean honestly I hate to say this but [TS]

like I know kids who are obsessed with [TS]

Star Wars because it sounds horrible to [TS]

say but like their first their first [TS]

exposure to it was the prequels which [TS]

seems like a horrible thing to do to a [TS]

child but the children really don't [TS]

realize what's good or not like when [TS]

you're really little kids have bad taste [TS]

right kids yeah kids can have bad taste [TS]

but no i mean like you'll see like I one [TS]

of my my fiancĂ©'s cuz around meet [TS]

nephew is is completely obsessed with [TS]

Star Wars and all is he all he seen as [TS]

the prequels but he he loves the idea [TS]

he's like I would you know I want to [TS]

pilot a fighter and I can't wait for the [TS]

force awakens and I think that Jedi are [TS]

so cool like he didn't get the you know [TS]

the small picture details that we [TS]

focused on his adults big [TS]

like oh my god this is awful he focused [TS]

on the big picture stuff the stuff that [TS]

makes star wars star wars and I'm [TS]

praying that you know force awakens is [TS]

heads and shoulders a better than than [TS]

the prequels but still it gives you know [TS]

it gives me hope that no matter what a [TS]

generation of children will come away [TS]

being like Star Wars is part of our life [TS]

four stars as part of our blood will [TS]

pick it up you know from from the new [TS]

  generation so to speak [TS]

you're right about when we can be done [TS]

John mentioned that there is definitely [TS]

an aspect of the of the fanfiction thing [TS]

and we want though the Doctor Who [TS]

rebooted but at the same time it was [TS]

fans who understood why they were fans [TS]

and when they when they perhaps even [TS]

though they were also world-class TV [TS]

writers when they would slip and put in [TS]

things that work basically fanservice [TS]

you know uh no giving fans what fans [TS]

want is not always the worst thing in [TS]

the world especially if you're trying to [TS]

revive a fandom that has been on hard [TS]

times and Doctor Who fandom certainly [TS]

was and when I look at the when I go to [TS]

that doctor convention in LA every year [TS]

good lord it is young now in a way that [TS]

it was not even five years ago and um [TS]

and that that is a success that is a [TS]

rebooted fandom where it's not just the [TS]

die hard to remember it from the [TS]

eighties it is brand-new people who love [TS]

it because of 2005 through 2015 and that [TS]

is a that that's something that star [TS]

wars strives for and you know aside from [TS]

the marketing blitz which is there and [TS]

the TV shows which are there in the end [TS]

you know if if they do their job right [TS]

then this movie will capture the [TS]

imagination of kids in a similar way at [TS]

least then it captured our imaginations [TS]

as kids I would think you're getting [TS]

back to what Dan said about sort of [TS]

  modern moviemaking sensibilities and [TS]

definitely see that in the Star Trek [TS]

like well there have been Star Trek [TS]

movies but here stark movies with the [TS]

new twist and they were made more like [TS]

modern movies right and I think Star [TS]

Wars this the same reason thinking like [TS]

well if they just make a movie in the [TS]

star wars universe in the style of [TS]

modern moviemaking and it's a good movie [TS]

and it's a good story and it's fun to [TS]

watch and it is respectful of the [TS]

the the setting a lot of hands John the [TS]

characters and all that stuff now but [TS]

like you come out and think it's fun but [TS]

i think it's still possible especially [TS]

now where john williams is still alive [TS]

the all the all the original actors are [TS]

  still alive [TS]

JJ did this one himself I think it's [TS]

still possible to do kind of miyazaki's [TS]

done because over so many years you know [TS]

if you look at Miyazaki's early movies [TS]

and you look like a spirited away versus [TS]

like castle in the sky [TS]

those movies are separated by many years [TS]

that nothing to do with each other [TS]

really they just made by the same studio [TS]

one of them does look older than the [TS]

other one but throughout all of the [TS]

studio ghibli movies of miyazaki's [TS]

movies there is something there is that [TS]

something that intangible quality of the [TS]

movie that makes you think this is a [TS]

miyazaki movie that is just as magical [TS]

now as it was then and I think there is [TS]

an equivalent of that for Star Wars [TS]

there is there is a certain star wars [TS]

magic that's a combination of you know [TS]

sort of adventure good-natured optimism [TS]

excitement I maybe a little bit of [TS]

novelty but like I don't even think you [TS]

need like oh these amazing special [TS]

effects like miyazaki again and again [TS]

made a movie that you're like there [TS]

there's just something magical about [TS]

this movie and even though it has no [TS]

relation to those other movies and those [TS]

other movies could not exist at all and [TS]

I would watch this one in isolation and [TS]

say there's something about this movie I [TS]

feel like there's something about Star [TS]

Wars the prequels didn't have it all and [TS]

I think it's possible to recapture that [TS]

and have the movie Rigby raised above [TS]

the level of all those just a fun movie [TS]

set in the star wars universe i give [TS]

like I think I feel better about this [TS]

movie when more of them come out which [TS]

is a weird thing to say but like when [TS]

they do the movie where there were [TS]

whatever the one they were doing what [TS]

that's like off of the trilogy not like [TS]

this movie and ecology films Yeah right [TS]

there whatever they're doing the getting [TS]

this thats our plans or whatever other [TS]

stories they want to tell the universe [TS]

those movies and they'll do their thing [TS]

and I think I'll be more comfortable [TS]

those but there is a certain weight of [TS]

expectation oh this is a new trilogy [TS]

with its gonna be you know seven eight [TS]

and nine and seven eight nine can follow [TS]

  four five and six [TS]

there's a lot of pressure there and i [TS]

feel like these movies i will feel [TS]

  better about said [TS]

Ben probably after it comes out maybe [TS]

after nine different I mean because then [TS]

I'll be like oh yeah it's not all hang [TS]

on this one thing but I just really hope [TS]

like if you're going to recapture that [TS]

star wars magic it's not because the [TS]

original people are doing in the same [TS]

way then you have the miyazaki the magic [TS]

is he was doing all the movies and he [TS]

got better with age and and you know he [TS]

put himself in those movies you can see [TS]

  he was still there [TS]

I just want I just want a little bit of [TS]

that magic in this movie before before [TS]

it becomes impossible to get that magic [TS]

and the movies have to become modern [TS]

movies I don't think this has to be a [TS]

modern we can make this can discovery [TS]

recapture the magic kind of in the same [TS]

way that you could say that last crusade [TS]

even though it's a pale shadow raters [TS]

Last Crusade captured some of that [TS]

energy magic because a lot of the same [TS]

people were involved and you can see ya [TS]

couple moments that movie like all this [TS]

is this is indeed this is Indiana Jones [TS]

is this is the guy I know from Raiders I [TS]

just want that in this but I think [TS]

  that's possible [TS]

honestly I really do and and going back [TS]

to clone wars i mean i-i think there are [TS]

there moments of that of s star wars [TS]

magic and clone wars and there are [TS]

moments in in rebels that are that REM [TS]

that make me reminisce Star Wars even [TS]

without the original people and in a [TS]

completely different medium i wanted the [TS]

biggest sort of most telling factors and [TS]

sort of this pre anticipation faces I've [TS]

been going in mostly spoiler-free I've [TS]

watched the trailers but I haven't [TS]

really been seeking out spoilers or [TS]

wanted to confirm any potential theories [TS]

i have but i'll watch semi like mostly [TS]

  spoiler-free conversations with work [TS]

with with Harrison Ford and with Carrie [TS]

Fisher there if there are a couple [TS]

interviews that they have done that are [TS]

pretty much entirely spoiler-free and [TS]

all they all they're doing the entire [TS]

interview is grinning and being like [TS]

it's really good it's really fun and [TS]

that's not that not like I've seen I've [TS]

seen Harrison have two drunks like her [TS]

support have to drug seller movie where [TS]

it's just like yes it's really good and [TS]

you don't see his eyes light up it's [TS]

just the this my like the fake fake sad [TS]

smile that actors have to do when [TS]

they're not passionately involved in a [TS]

project but watching I think Harrison [TS]

Ford in a dog suit on Jimmy Fallon a [TS]

while a couple a couple month or two [TS]

back and Carrie Fisher last week with [TS]

her dog on I think good morning america [TS]

and both of them seem to have such [TS]

exuberant joy for the film in a way that [TS]

I I feel like you don't see actors with [TS]

this kind of passion for projects that [TS]

they don't actually think are something [TS]

special and and to have the original [TS]

actors and especially Harrison Ford who [TS]

is notoriously grumpy like he's the [TS]

man's in his early seventies he doesn't [TS]

have to he doesn't really have to show [TS]

for movies he doesn't like anymore [TS]

um to see both of them so excited about [TS]

the release of this film and so excited [TS]

about the screenings that they've seen [TS]

that that fills me with that fills me [TS]

with so much new hope [TS]

aho of john i would say on there are [TS]

some interesting opportunities here to [TS]

recapture the magic in different ways [TS]

i'm thinking of again to i'm going to [TS]

bring up a doctor who think that the [TS]

season finale of Doctor Who features [TS]

i'll say asset that is a recreation of a [TS]

unoriginal more or less doctor who set [TS]

from the sixties and/or i'm reminded of [TS]

life when Star Trek The Next Generation [TS]

did that episode that we're Scotty we [TS]

use a holodeck to make the original [TS]

enterprise bridge like they're the road [TS]

one movie next year which is about the [TS]

ceiling of the Death Star plans that [TS]

leads into into episode 4 into the [TS]

original star wars film that's going to [TS]

be interesting because art direction [TS]

wise it can actually have to measure it [TS]

it it will feel like and look like the [TS]

original star wars in a way that this [TS]

film doesn't need to and that's that's [TS]

an interesting opportunity to tell a [TS]

different kind of story too i mean it [TS]

that that's a bit of artistic freedom [TS]

that having these films that are not [TS]

part of the main saga can can provide so [TS]

i'm actually kinda interested in that [TS]

I'm also interested in that what they're [TS]

not doing at least at this point is [TS]

making the whole film series and [TS]

interconnected story like the Marvel [TS]

stories and realizing that their star [TS]

wars advantage here is that they've got [TS]

this this long set of years to play with [TS]

and tell stories in with the first you [TS]

know with with episodes one through [TS]

seven now and and that they're they're [TS]

gonna be able to hop all all all around [TS]

and tell stories from within this rich [TS]

  universe [TS]

I think that's exciting the idea of [TS]

seeing other kinds of star [TS]

his movies and other kinds of Star Wars [TS]

content and and you may get some of that [TS]

kind of old vibe feel from rug one I [TS]

don't think there's much less pressure [TS]

with those stories oh yeah i do whatever [TS]

you want like make make a new our [TS]

detective story make make one of them a [TS]

horror movie don't care do her assigned [TS]

  IP I it's a big it's a big universe like [TS]

make make a romantic comedy star wars [TS]

universe i don't care go for right it's [TS]

just that the 789 i would like one of [TS]

them doesn't have to you know it doesn't [TS]

have to be fancy services shouldn't be [TS]

in fact I don't want like it almost [TS]

scares me a little bit the original [TS]

characters and of course i love them i [TS]

want to see them again but on the other [TS]

hand my call but don't ruin this because [TS]

this should really be a new story with [TS]

new characters it's not really about you [TS]

and like we talked about in the past [TS]

  podcast about this [TS]

what are you gonna do with those little [TS]

characters just like there's a certain [TS]

magic of star wars in the same way I [TS]

think Miyazaki's the best example I can [TS]

think of the certain magic miyazaki and [TS]

even though his movies are just so [TS]

incredibly wildly different from each [TS]

other like you know robots vs creatures [TS]

vs magic did you know little kids adults [TS]

animals just there there's so much [TS]

variation and yet through it all you [TS]

feel this this similarity feel that [TS]

there's something about it that it did [TS]

regard you know even though you know the [TS]

settings are the same and they're not [TS]

the same time period there's no [TS]

characters in common whatsoever you can [TS]

feel it and that's what I want out of [TS]

this like in this does have characters [TS]

  in common [TS]

this will have settings and comments is [TS]

part of continuity I just don't think it [TS]

should lean on those things for for the [TS]

feeling I wonder who ever is you know my [TS]

surrogate in this movie I want to care [TS]

about as much as I care about like Luke [TS]

you know flying through the trench or [TS]

you know a character that i can connect [TS]

with as much as Yoda or a villain as [TS]

good as darth vader i mean this [TS]

tolerance i know i obviously not going [TS]

to get it all if it's just it's just [TS]

nearly as good as the star trek movies [TS]

will walk out and probably call it a win [TS]

and then just look forward to for [TS]

further movies in the universe but if [TS]

they're going to capture recapture [TS]

anything original star wars now is the [TS]

time to do it please [TS]

well the good news is I feel like we've [TS]

probably already God we knock on every [TS]

piece of wood is nearby feel like we [TS]

probably already seen the workers that [TS]

we've got to offer in this franchise so [TS]

you know and then again setting a little [TS]

bar but you know it's in the romantic [TS]

  comedy [TS]

I know but I've seen the Ewok movies so [TS]

that's pretty much the same thing just [TS]

having like AKA brain trust of of people [TS]

rather than having it be this creator [TS]

who can do whatever he wants would make [TS]

me doesn't even like Star Wars bed with [TS]

me think that it's probably unlikely [TS]

that we'll get something quite as [TS]

disastrous as the prequels but you never [TS]

never seen everything yet you have the [TS]

hobbit movies well one but we've got [TS]

we've got we've got Peter Jackson [TS]

after-the-fact saying Hobbit movies are [TS]

a mess because they didn't give us time [TS]

to to storyboard or time to actually [TS]

solve problems as a director dropped out [TS]

and so he had seven and there's no I [TS]

mean there's a lot of a lot of things [TS]

there but yeah bad things could happen [TS]

yeah like anyway I'm i give them plenty [TS]

of room to make bad movies in the future [TS]

just tried to blow 789 a modest proposal [TS]

from John siracusa time to take a non [TS]

sponsor break i just want to tell [TS]

everybody out there were going to be [TS]

recording our year and wrap up episode [TS]

on December 28 if you have particular [TS]

favorites from the incomparable or being [TS]

comfortable spin-off podcast from 2015 [TS]

send them to podcast at the incomparable [TS]

dot-com we'd love to hear from you and [TS]

then we will celebrate everything 2015 [TS]

in our first episode of 2016 [TS]

because that's how we roll and thanks to [TS]

everybody out there for listening to the [TS]

incomparable this year we really [TS]

  appreciate it [TS]

so what's the plan i want to ask you all [TS]

this what's the plan right now and when [TS]

you're thinking about do you when you [TS]

  seeing it [TS]

do you plan to see it again have you [TS]

already built in other times you're [TS]

going to see it what is your what is [TS]

your your plan for watching this movie [TS]

ran what's what's your plan [TS]

all right well here's the plan to see it [TS]

thursday night with friends but I [TS]

couldn't get into that screen so I'm [TS]

going thursday night slightly before so [TS]

i get to see it before all my friends [TS]

which kind of is responsible for [TS]

  spoilers [TS]

yeah I can shout i can go into the next [TS]

theater as i finish that probably be [TS]

like 30 minutes from the end be like [TS]

  that God ours [TS]

yeah but I'm but yeah and I'm going [TS]

with with Rick and I i think we're going [TS]

again friday morning i think that's [TS]

that's what I've heard is then we've [TS]

bought a second round of tickets and [TS]

chances are knowing me will probably go [TS]

again and like monday because i need the [TS]

weekend to like actually digest I see [TS]

all of the ne ne pivotal movies and this [TS]

is a bad habit from when I was a kid but [TS]

like I'll see them three or four times [TS]

mostly partially because i want to get [TS]

sick of them even with super expensive [TS]

movie tickets but part honestly a lot of [TS]

its just enjoying the world building and [TS]

enjoying the scenery and and everything [TS]

that I didn't catch the first time [TS]

because I'm you know your game in the oh [TS]

my god new stuff in this franchise and I [TS]

feel like Star Wars Star Wars is for me [TS]

a special franchise in the way that like [TS]

the MCU just simply isn't i'm not going [TS]

to go see MCU movie 5 times but I will [TS]

definitely see a Pixar movie two or [TS]

three times and i will see a Star Wars [TS]

movie two or three times even if it's [TS]

  terrible one [TS]

John what's your plan something about [TS]

thursday i'm in the same shows dan I [TS]

think although it's reserved seating so [TS]

will be seated so i think i think [TS]

there's literally sitting behind me away [TS]

from you guys from the from the 30 [TS]

minutes early if showing your joke but [TS]

this is legit fear that I have for my [TS]

mother most dangerous time is why i'm in [TS]

the theater familiar but sauron to go [TS]

into your clutter and other people are [TS]

coming out and I don't want to see their [TS]

faces or anything or anything they have [TS]

to say i don't want to see hand motions [TS]

I mean I'm glad I'm seeing Thursday [TS]

because I really just need to see it so [TS]

i can safely use the internet again [TS]

right so yeah so thursday and you know [TS]

Thursday's a regular work day so I'm [TS]

just gonna go to work nor the internet [TS]

come home have dinner and go to the [TS]

theater watching and then I'll feel safe [TS]

and then on friday i'm going with my [TS]

wife taking friday off work and we're [TS]

just gonna go see it together and then [TS]

on Saturday the whole family is going [TS]

well that's the full so that's the full [TS]

  siracusa three-day extravaganza keep [TS]

adding family members and these are all [TS]

2d screenings by the way I want maybe on [TS]

if I really like it on sunday i'll try [TS]

and imax one or maybe the next weekend [TS]

i'll stop trying imax one because I [TS]

kind of interested to see it in and all [TS]

the formats that it's going to be out in [TS]

assuming it's any good like if I the [TS]

third time i see it like you don't [TS]

  you'll know by then [TS]

yeah Shirley Shirley says the man who [TS]

saw phantom menace five times the [TS]

theater surely you'll know about their [TS]

time it's good i only saw episodes two [TS]

and three one time in the house same [TS]

  same here [TS]

dan what's your plan yes I too am going [TS]

on Thursday later in the evening at [TS]

which with a with a bunch of people [TS]

  including apparently John syracuse [TS]

sitting behind me which should be fun [TS]

just get the commentary is really what [TS]

I'm looking forward to I don't have any [TS]

subsequent showing plans yet but I would [TS]

not bet against seeing it again at some [TS]

point that weekend and I was just [TS]

discussing with some family members [TS]

possibly going over the christmas break [TS]

well i'm visiting them so yeah so I [TS]

think that it will it will definitely be [TS]

cynical times I like John if it is the [TS]

end up being it's good i will probably [TS]

consider an imax showing just because [TS]

I'm curious to see how it looks on a [TS]

giant screen for me it's a it is [TS]

thursday evening with the family were [TS]

all we're all going jamie has a we're [TS]

going to the seven o'clock showing on [TS]

Thursday James gotta a final the next to [TS]

the next day I'm it's too bad she's [TS]

going to see Star Wars she said that for [TS]

study after there is no study during [TS]

Star Wars we're gonna go see Star Wars [TS]

and i have no plans beyond that it's [TS]

great how the movies open on the day [TS]

before they actually open now I don't [TS]

even get this midnight showing started [TS]

like seven the previous day is like [TS]

Christmas creep you know it's so here [TS]

eventually like the really stable me [TS]

nothing in the midnight showing of three [TS]

days before I've seen Tuesday Tuesday [TS]

showings for friday movie before in Los [TS]

Angeles it does happen but you know in [TS]

in some way I actually kind of like it [TS]

because it means not having to be awake [TS]

at night and then go home at three in [TS]

  the morning [TS]

anybody remember dark knight the first [TS]

the second Dark Knight movie the second [TS]

Dark Knight movie where it was like what [TS]

two and a half hours long and i didn't [TS]

get home until four in the morning it [TS]

was was a dark time for the Empire i use [TS]

my creaky old man wasn't remember that [TS]

went to the Phantom Menace at a midnight [TS]

showing and then went out to like ihop [TS]

and dissected you type of movie until [TS]

  about 5am [TS]

went back to my friends house slept for [TS]

two hours woke up picked up Tony sent [TS]

away from school if it's cool still [TS]

because we were seniors I think or we [TS]

were in freshman in college and then [TS]

went and saw it again [TS]

yeah that was um speaking of dark times [TS]

sleep deprivation explains all they [TS]

realized midnight showings is so much [TS]

fun you can make even more money if you [TS]

showed at 10pm and then I realized well [TS]

we're going to 10pm you can also show at [TS]

7pm couldn't we just really firsthand [TS]

why not what its gonna be like JJ Abrams [TS]

want your rough cut of the movie like I [TS]

think I think what they've realized this [TS]

is a market for people to go out and see [TS]

him a big movie on thursday and then why [TS]

would you hold it for friday at that [TS]

point why not why not extend the weekend [TS]

another day and make money on thursday [TS]

evening at least buy you know I think [TS]

hey if the customers are there then take [TS]

advantage of it so I know so many people [TS]

who are seeing this on thursday that was [TS]

pretty funny i think i was just 3d which [TS]

I'm not thrilled about but you know [TS]

whatever where were we're going to see [TS]

it and hope Jamie gets a good score on [TS]

  her finals [TS]

Jason what I'm what theater are you [TS]

seeing it in i'm seeing it as the [TS]

century corte madera which is a single [TS]

screen movie theater which they're [TS]

probably going to close the next [TS]

surprisingly playing star wars are only [TS]

movie for that the screen [TS]

ya welcome that that that is the thing [TS]

that they do is they tend to put the big [TS]

the big you know blockbuster film on [TS]

that one screen with the big with the [TS]

big screen and legend has it this is the [TS]

George Lucas's preferred movie theater [TS]

so i hope it doesn't ruin it by like I [TS]

don't know what he stands up in the [TS]

middle of a movie about how my mommy [TS]

tell you what my outline said it was [TS]

going to get pictures of the circular so [TS]

the next question is well how we gonna [TS]

how are we gonna find time to talk about [TS]

this on the podcast next weekend we're [TS]

going to find the time we're going to [TS]

find some time we're gonna do it we're [TS]

going to do it somehow [TS]

all right i mean i-i literally in the [TS]

incomparable schedule it just says OMG [TS]

star wars on that next weekend and that [TS]

the following weekend it literally says [TS]

OMG more star wars because I figure [TS]

we'll probably have more than one [TS]

episode worth between all of us and [TS]

everybody else in the incomparable [TS]

panelist calendar who is also [TS]

going to see it so you know i do think [TS]

that we're gonna we're gonna have a lot [TS]

of opportunity to break it down a great [TS]

time to announce our new star wars [TS]

sub-caste yeah well there is a feed full [TS]

of everything that the network posts [TS]

about Star Wars so I'm sure climb and [TS]

I'm sure Joe and dan will be doing a [TS]

defocused about it since they've been [TS]

covering all the Star Wars movies on d [TS]

focus lately too but yeah this is yeah [TS]

we we don't need a sub caste dan it's [TS]

all star wars now the resident December [TS]

practically incomparable has just become [TS]

the incomparable Star Wars channel it [TS]

  could [TS]

did you realize that I'm Star Wars [TS]

awakens comes out essentially a week [TS]

before christmas day we are literally [TS]

getting Christmas early actually I it [TS]

kind of bugs me that it's so close to [TS]

Christmas I'd hoped you know and some of [TS]

that is just podcast scheduling like [TS]

okay I wish we had more easy AJ more [TS]

weeks you get re ballon d'or Christmas [TS]

but instead it's just like it's right [TS]

  before Christmas [TS]

it's right there although you know what [TS]

if they done the previous week then it [TS]

would have been on my birthday and I [TS]

can't handle the star wars movie [TS]

potentially being bad on my birthday [TS]

  would just be awful [TS]

this is going to be interesting we've [TS]

invested a lot I mean all the given that [TS]

we were talking about this three years [TS]

ago in you know zero information terms [TS]

at that point just that Lucasfilm had [TS]

bought or I had been bought by disney [TS]

and that there was going to be a new [TS]

trilogy which blew our minds but it you [TS]

know it's come to this which is there is [TS]

a movie we have plans we have tickets [TS]

bought way in advance which is also kind [TS]

of hilarious and it's a it's gonna be a [TS]

real thing that's uh so I'll just sounds [TS]

harken back to one of my cousin's [TS]

telling me that she remembered being in [TS]

school and worrying that you know after [TS]

watching empire that she would die [TS]

before the Jedi came out so everybody [TS]

stay safe out there this because all I'm [TS]

saying that's the same topic came up on [TS]

a recent podcast i was on tonight [TS]

the same thought yeah take no chances [TS]

this week people if you're gonna go [TS]

skydiving put it off just a week [TS]

well I hope I don't break my neck and [TS]

roller derby this weekend that would be [TS]

  sad [TS]

well wheel you into the theater don't [TS]

worry I mean yeah the the roller derby [TS]

tournament is called state wars and its [TS]

star wars-themed so you know maybe maybe [TS]

you'll be okay maybe the star wars God's [TS]

will be looking over but yeah i'm [TS]

probably doing too many dangerous things [TS]

  this week [TS]

oh well it'll be okay don't know yeah [TS]

  yeah don't yeah I'm sure I'm sure we'll [TS]

  be fine [TS]

I've got BBA to protect me 20 yeah we [TS]

put a lot of we put a lot of effort into [TS]

this movie so we need to see it now [TS]

yeah but I've decided not to go [TS]

well i should i should say speaking of [TS]

  pretty anticipation [TS]

um if you end up it disneyland or disney [TS]

world before you see the movie [TS]

do not go on Star Tours this is this is [TS]

something i discovered and it doesn't [TS]

spoil a whole lot but it definitely is [TS]

like oh this is a new thing this is a [TS]

new and interesting thing that probably [TS]

I shouldn't be seeing right now oh well [TS]

so yeah John I don't think you have any [TS]

plans to go to start to to disneyland [TS]

before seeing the force awakens but you [TS]

know just in case you were thinking of [TS]

like a quick trip down to Florida or [TS]

California just don't do it probably [TS]

about yeah probably just apparently and [TS]

by the only reason I went on Star Tours [TS]

was because you raved about it so much [TS]

and so i figured i'm going to try to [TS]

brave the motion sickness but I could [TS]

end up closing my eyes for a lot of oh [TS]

  no [TS]

yeah just as that's a rough ride for me [TS]

but I didn't want to i will probably [TS]

never do it again I'm am looking forward [TS]

to eventually going back to disney after [TS]

they do the whole crazy Star Wars land [TS]

whatever yeah and that's that that's a [TS]

  great dick there already [TS]

I think they're already constructing [TS]

they're tearing down the but they were [TS]

  tearing animal at Disneyland [TS]

yeah am they took down a bunch of [TS]

  disneyland everything's space mountain [TS]

to hyperspace mountain in disneyland [TS]

proper and disney world they they [TS]

basically cordon off a whole section of [TS]

hollywood studios they actually we were [TS]

one day off from seeing the star wars [TS]

launch Bay experience we just timed our [TS]

tickets and properly but on the day that [TS]

  I was leaving [TS]

something on Twitter actually messaged [TS]

me and was like you know i would say [TS]

that you guys just missed this being [TS]

here but i'm just in line and I've [TS]

already seen three major spoilers so [TS]

perhaps it was good that you you know [TS]

narrowly missed it was like okay yeah [TS]

  they think [TS]

thank you and i miss Twitter person for [TS]

a plotting our are good decisions [TS]

yeah but I the idea of a whole star [TS]

  wars-themed part of disneyland that's a [TS]

good idea i think people need to get [TS]

such a good i guess people get such a [TS]

kick out of like the stormtroopers in [TS]

near near the star tours section of of [TS]

disneyland that that will be on the that [TS]

will be a lot of fun but because the [TS]

thing that makes me really excited about [TS]

that is like a few years ago I guess few [TS]

more than a few years ago wanted Wally [TS]

come out 2007-8 something like that they [TS]

had a Wally rolling around in 2008 wet [TS]

disneyland and I'm like the the wally [TS]

was in like a small area and didn't [TS]

really go very far but I'm like you have [TS]

a Wally you have a tiny proof-of-concept [TS]

bb-8 I've seen the real life version [TS]

proof-of-concept bb-8 the concept of [TS]

  droids autonomously rolling around [TS]

disney world and disneyland is not out [TS]

of the question and that thrills me [TS]

especially given disney's history with [TS]

  really really good [TS]

automatic design like one of the reasons [TS]

why i want to go to someplace like harry [TS]

potter land is the thematics like I [TS]

don't even care about the rights I just [TS]

  care about [TS]

oh I'm gonna walk into a section of the [TS]

park and all of a sudden it feels like [TS]

i'm in i'm in harry potter story or all [TS]

of a sudden it feels like I'm on a rebel [TS]

base or you know I'm in the jungle on [TS]

ready to join a Jedi Temple like all of [TS]

these that the potential of that is so [TS]

exciting to me so exciting [TS]

see there's always more to anticipate [TS]

isn't there always always more spoilers [TS]

to avoid yeah that's right so many [TS]

spoilers there are always new spoilers [TS]

being always in motion the spoilers are [TS]

see I can occasionally reference every [TS]

now and then I do it all right well uh [TS]

  everybody get your [TS]

you know get ready get ready get your [TS]

get your starter shoes on I don't know [TS]

what those would be put on your on your [TS]

Jedi hat i'll go by those [TS]

three-hundred-dollar boots that Ray is [TS]

  wearing in the trailer [TS]

alright well everybody out there i hope [TS]

you to stay safe in this week of [TS]

anticipation don't do anything foolish [TS]

because you need we need you to be there [TS]

at the at the Star Wars premieres two [TS]

and then we will we'll be back here at [TS]

some point next weekend with some cast [TS]

of characters hopefully this one and [TS]

we'll break down at least our initial [TS]

impressions about it i feel like you [TS]

know what will i will have some [TS]

impressions about it and that and and [TS]

that that will be exciting and then [TS]

we'll have another week maybe that to [TS]

put thoughts together in a simple of [TS]

some other panels and talk about it too [TS]

so much more star wars to come in for [TS]

the rest of the month but uh until then [TS]

i would like to thank my stars pals have [TS]

been on this episode 7 journey with me [TS]

the last three-plus years now good Lord [TS]

and more'n thank you i guess the force [TS]

is still with us at least for now [TS]

John siracusa thanks very much no [TS]

spoilers Jason no spoilers and certainly [TS]

called well thank you thank you and may [TS]

the force be with you all [TS]

beep boop that's droid for something [TS]

that won't even know thanks everyone for [TS]

  listening [TS]

that's what it's for pp-put poop and [TS]

we'll see you next week [TS]

  [Music] [TS]
