626: Droid Does

00:00:07 ◼   ► Hello and welcome to Connected Episode 626th.

00:00:13 ◼   ► Today is Thursday, October twenty ninth, twenty twenty six.

00:00:16 ◼   ► Lots of twenty sixes, which is weird because I'm twenty-six years old.

00:00:20 ◼   ► I'm your annual chairman, Stephen Hackett, and I'm joined by Mike Hurley.

00:00:25 ◼   ► Hello.

00:00:26 ◼   ► Why are you you return to the show and just lies?

00:00:28 ◼   ► Like it's Like is that is that your new thing?

00:00:31 ◼   ► Like have you been been away from the show learning how to lie?

00:00:34 ◼   ► No, I'm not twenty six.

00:00:35 ◼   ► No, you're

00:00:37 ◼   ► far away from it.

00:00:37 ◼   ► Forty closer to forty six, you know?

00:00:40 ◼   ► Geez, man.

00:00:41 ◼   ► It's true though.

00:00:42 ◼   ► I've been back five seconds.

00:00:44 ◼   ► Catching strays.

00:00:46 ◼   ► Well, you know.

00:00:46 ◼   ► Hello.

00:00:47 ◼   ► That's what happens when you're gone.

00:00:48 ◼   ► We've turned it villain.

00:00:50 ◼   ► So there you go.

00:00:51 ◼   ► That's what happened.

00:00:52 ◼   ► Don't leave again 'cause we keep turning into villains.

00:00:54 ◼   ► Just me and you today, 'cause Federico is in the city of Angels.

00:00:58 ◼   ► Being a villain.

00:01:00 ◼   ► You know what may be, actually.

00:01:01 ◼   ► I haven't checked in.

00:01:04 ◼   ► The man's the man's typing on an iPhone duo with a kickstand.

00:01:08 ◼   ► Yes, we'll talk about that next week.

00:01:09 ◼   ► Yes.

00:01:10 ◼   ► He sent that picture to our group chat and um I opened Notion for

00:01:14 ◼   ► next week and just like we needed like added as a bullet point, like

00:01:18 ◼   ► Federico's blogging setup on the duo.

00:01:20 ◼   ► But pretty classic Federico that so basically he is sitting there with a keyboard

00:01:26 ◼   ► in front of an iPhone duo and he's half cut kickstand.

00:01:29 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:01:30 ◼   ► And he's blogging and there's like four people taking a picture of him.

00:01:34 ◼   ► Which is that feels about right for Federico.

00:01:38 ◼   ► Like he's just he's just living his life out there.

00:01:40 ◼   ► He's blogging and kickstanding,

00:01:44 ◼   ► meeting John Turnus.

00:01:46 ◼   ► Yep.

00:01:46 ◼   ► We'll get to all that stuff.

00:01:48 ◼   ► Okay.

00:01:48 ◼   ► But first we gotta get the follow up.

00:01:50 ◼   ► Okay.

00:01:51 ◼   ► Which I did notice at least on one episode when I was gone, you

00:01:54 ◼   ► didn't first.

00:01:56 ◼   ► Yeah, there was something got in the way.

00:01:58 ◼   ► I don't remember what it was.

00:01:58 ◼   ► I think we had enough on a tangent.

00:02:00 ◼   ► I don't remember usually, so I just go with it.

00:02:04 ◼   ► Check the weather.

00:02:05 ◼   ► Weather unit helped with underscore root.

00:02:08 ◼   ► Uh a couple feedback points on it.

00:02:11 ◼   ► Uh Griff wrote in, Mike, shout out to choosing Flagstaff for check the weather

00:02:16 ◼   ► screenshots.

00:02:16 ◼   ► My welcome martyr.

00:02:18 ◼   ► Go Jack.

00:02:19 ◼   ► You're welcome.

00:02:19 ◼   ► You're welcome.

00:02:20 ◼   ► I love choosing those screenshots.

00:02:22 ◼   ► Man, flag staff.

00:02:23 ◼   ► Woo baby, do I love to staff some flags?

00:02:26 ◼   ► You didn't make you didn't you I don't know what anyone's talking about.

00:02:29 ◼   ► So in the in the absolute screenshots, it's flag staff.

00:02:32 ◼   ► Um it came time to make app store screenshots, which I do at the

00:02:37 ◼   ► very end of the process because you know in fact UI tweaks were made

00:02:40 ◼   ► after I made these screenshots and the ones in the app store actually slightly

00:02:44 ◼   ► photoshopped to like cover up something.

00:02:46 ◼   ► Um you have to wait until the end 'cause you can't trust these developers

00:02:49 ◼   ► and designers.

00:02:50 ◼   ► No.

00:02:50 ◼   ► Like they'll tell you it's done, but it's Oh let me move this button

00:02:54 ◼   ► over here.

00:02:54 ◼   ► Yeah, oh I'm just gonna restart

00:02:59 ◼   ► it again.

00:02:59 ◼   ► This is what they do.

00:03:00 ◼   ► You can't trust them.

00:03:01 ◼   ► They can't.

00:03:02 ◼   ► They're they're a wily bunch.

00:03:03 ◼   ► Yep.

00:03:04 ◼   ► So the day came to come make screenshots.

00:03:07 ◼   ► And we have coverage in several places around the world in the app, but

00:03:11 ◼   ► I wanted the screenshots to be in the US.

00:03:14 ◼   ► We think that's gonna be predominantly the the the use base based on our

00:03:19 ◼   ► other apps, right?

00:03:19 ◼   ► We have a lot of US customers.

00:03:20 ◼   ► It's like, well, let's do it here.

00:03:22 ◼   ► Um there was no rain in the US that day anywhere.

00:03:26 ◼   ► And of course you want the screenshots to show off the radar.

00:03:29 ◼   ► It's like the whole point.

00:03:30 ◼   ► Like the whole backdrow of the app is the radar.

00:03:32 ◼   ► Pr precipitation, very important for for an app which is predominantly focused on weather

00:03:37 ◼   ► radar.

00:03:38 ◼   ► Yes.

00:03:38 ◼   ► I was like, Well, what do I do?

00:03:41 ◼   ► Then I remembered I have a computer.

00:03:44 ◼   ► Computers can do things for you when you're not there.

00:03:48 ◼   ► So I had Claude look at the National Weather Service website every 30 minutes

00:03:54 ◼   ► and look for weather, like look for storms.

00:03:58 ◼   ► And if it found one,

00:04:01 ◼   ► load like get that location and put it in the simulator running on my

00:04:06 ◼   ► local MacBook Pro with check the weather up and running in it.

00:04:10 ◼   ► And then take the set of screenshots I wanted um um every two minutes

00:04:14 ◼   ► until the storm passed that area.

00:04:17 ◼   ► And I gave it was like, you know, it needs to be the top

00:04:19 ◼   ► fifty like cities in the US.

00:04:21 ◼   ► Like I d you know, it needs to be somewhat recognizable.

00:04:23 ◼   ► I think Flagstaff is recognizable.

00:04:26 ◼   ► And um it rain overnight and I finally caught one in Flagstaff like in

00:04:31 ◼   ► the middle of the night and I came upstairs and I had screenshots and

00:04:35 ◼   ► it was ready to go.

00:04:37 ◼   ► So it it was not a problem I was anticipating that there wouldn't be

00:04:41 ◼   ► any weather to take screenshots of,

00:04:44 ◼   ► which is just uh just a situation I found myself in that I don't

00:04:48 ◼   ► think many people have found themselves in.

00:04:50 ◼   ► No.

00:04:51 ◼   ► Um but then I was like, you know, I need to be able to

00:04:53 ◼   ► make these screenshots on demand.

00:04:56 ◼   ► Right.

00:04:56 ◼   ► Like I I I don't want to be beholden to Mother Nature when I

00:05:00 ◼   ► need a new screenshot.

00:05:01 ◼   ► And I thought, well I can create weather.

00:05:03 ◼   ► Mother Nature can't hold you down.

00:05:04 ◼   ► I can I can create weather.

00:05:07 ◼   ► Whoa.

00:05:08 ◼   ► And so uh oh.

00:05:09 ◼   ► He's drunk for power.

00:05:11 ◼   ► He had one afternoon with Claude and next now he thinks he can make

00:05:15 ◼   ► the weather.

00:05:15 ◼   ► So I have a little Mac app called Weatherman.

00:05:19 ◼   ► Uh uh.

00:05:20 ◼   ► And it takes the radar system that Dave built as like the base layer.

00:05:26 ◼   ► This genuinely sounds like a like a Bon villain original.

00:05:30 ◼   ► Oh, it's bad.

00:05:30 ◼   ► And like this app is not good.

00:05:32 ◼   ► Like I don't think anyone else knows how to use it.

00:05:36 ◼   ► Um it uses like the radar, like the base radar how to check the

00:05:40 ◼   ► weather uh in a Mac app, and I can overlay storms on the radar

00:05:47 ◼   ► and then it uh it pulls real data, like real weather information from the

00:05:53 ◼   ► National Weather Service forever that is, and then predicts, based on like National Weather

00:05:59 ◼   ► Service history, what temperature wind speed, et cetera would be for a storm in

00:06:04 ◼   ► that area at that time.

00:06:06 ◼   ► But are they real storms or are you making storms?

00:06:08 ◼   ► No, I have a button and I can I can add like a squall

00:06:11 ◼   ► line.

00:06:11 ◼   ► Oh my God.

00:06:12 ◼   ► Scattered rain.

00:06:13 ◼   ► I made a hurricane the size of the US accidentally.

00:06:16 ◼   ► Um

00:06:18 ◼   ► everyone's dead.

00:06:19 ◼   ► See what I'm saying?

00:06:19 ◼   ► This is villain.

00:06:20 ◼   ► Like this is just villains.

00:06:22 ◼   ► Everyone's dead.

00:06:23 ◼   ► Um and so now I can make screenshots on demand.

00:06:25 ◼   ► And

00:06:27 ◼   ► I think if Federico was here, he would cry when you would for you

00:06:31 ◼   ► telling the story.

00:06:32 ◼   ► Like I think he would actually shed real human tears.

00:06:36 ◼   ► Like just at the when you just so nonchalantly said So I asked Claude

00:06:40 ◼   ► and I I just imagine he would just burst into to actual human man

00:06:44 ◼   ► tears if if he was here right now.

00:06:46 ◼   ► Yeah, I can just uh I can just add a squad line.

00:06:50 ◼   ► If you're listening live, if you're a a relay member, you have access to

00:06:53 ◼   ► the Discord.

00:06:54 ◼   ► Um I'm gonna put a screenshot of it in Discord for you, right?

00:06:58 ◼   ► You gotta put it in the show notes too.

00:07:00 ◼   ► Don't you know?

00:07:00 ◼   ► I'll put it in the show notes too.

00:07:02 ◼   ► I'm a man of the people.

00:07:03 ◼   ► Show note to show note show note friends, you know.

00:07:05 ◼   ► I'll look out for you.

00:07:06 ◼   ► Don't worry.

00:07:07 ◼   ► Steven might not, but I will.

00:07:08 ◼   ► I'll I'll look out for you.

00:07:09 ◼   ► Weather man These are the kinds of ways that you think when you don't

00:07:14 ◼   ► have any honorifics like you like you do, you know?

00:07:17 ◼   ► I do.

00:07:17 ◼   ► I am honored.

00:07:19 ◼   ► I am a man of the people and this is kind of like one

00:07:21 ◼   ► of the ways in which I uh Okay.

00:07:22 ◼   ► I'll get you a link.

00:07:23 ◼   ► I'm uploading it to five twelve.

00:07:25 ◼   ► Okay.

00:07:26 ◼   ► Um, so yeah, weatherman.

00:07:28 ◼   ► Um Weatherman.

00:07:29 ◼   ► What a weird problem to have, but these things happen to us.

00:07:33 ◼   ► But it's like this is one of these things, you know, we so many

00:07:36 ◼   ► people are talking about this stuff right now for good reason, uh, and bad

00:07:40 ◼   ► of course, but for good reason of like

00:07:43 ◼   ► these are tools that n don't exist and they will make your life better,

00:07:48 ◼   ► make your work better.

00:07:49 ◼   ► Like what else were you supposed to do?

00:07:51 ◼   ► Like wait, like an indeterminate amount of time for weather?

00:07:54 ◼   ► Like wait maybe Photoshop it?

00:07:56 ◼   ► Like I don't know what really what else you would have done.

00:07:58 ◼   ► Well that's the road it was gonna go down.

00:07:59 ◼   ► Uh yeah.

00:08:00 ◼   ► But this is way better than that.

00:08:02 ◼   ► Like just way better than that.

00:08:03 ◼   ► Okay, the icon is for members only.

00:08:05 ◼   ► Okay.

00:08:05 ◼   ► Yeah, you gotta pay to see the icon.

00:08:07 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:08:08 ◼   ► Pretty good.

00:08:09 ◼   ► And I won't say anything about it.

00:08:10 ◼   ► Um it's a masterpiece, I think, is what you would say.

00:08:14 ◼   ► All right.

00:08:14 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:08:15 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:08:16 ◼   ► I I there is something that someone could say.

00:08:18 ◼   ► There's something you would say.

00:08:20 ◼   ► Um

00:08:21 ◼   ► It was we were actually really lucky in the testing of this app because

00:08:25 ◼   ► just as we were getting ready to put it out to the world, two

00:08:27 ◼   ► storms hit the UK.

00:08:28 ◼   ► So it really helped for t for final precipitation awareness testing.

00:08:32 ◼   ► Mm-hmm.

00:08:33 ◼   ► You need to be weather aware, Mike.

00:08:36 ◼   ► What does that mean?

00:08:37 ◼   ► You're aware of the weather.

00:08:38 ◼   ► Okay.

00:08:39 ◼   ► Weather aware.

00:08:40 ◼   ► All right.

00:08:41 ◼   ► It feels like that's like a slogan for something.

00:08:44 ◼   ► Be weather aware.

00:08:45 ◼   ► Yeah, weather aware.

00:08:46 ◼   ► It feels like that is like like neighborhood watch but for weather or something.

00:08:51 ◼   ► It feels like it's going to start one of those.

00:08:53 ◼   ► Isn't that a thing though?

00:08:55 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:08:55 ◼   ► Yeah, 'cause you are like yeah this is Elliot wrote in about this.

00:08:59 ◼   ► Stephen recently linked to his old post about check the weather one point oh

00:09:03 ◼   ► and this sentence struck stuck out to me.

00:09:05 ◼   ► Somebody's and I almost got killed one night chasing a tornado an hour or

00:09:09 ◼   ► so east of Memphis.

00:09:11 ◼   ► That's a story for a different time.

00:09:13 ◼   ► Uh well, Elliot wants to know if that time is now.

00:09:16 ◼   ► Thirteen years later?

00:09:18 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:09:19 ◼   ► Actually I think I've told the story since You may have.

00:09:22 ◼   ► You may have.

00:09:22 ◼   ► But There are only so many stories, you know?

00:09:25 ◼   ► I I'm only I mean, when you're twenty six, you really just haven't lived

00:09:27 ◼   ► that much life yet.

00:09:28 ◼   ► That's true.

00:09:29 ◼   ► That is true.

00:09:30 ◼   ► Uh yeah, so briefly, uh in high school, so before iPhones and smartphones and

00:09:35 ◼   ► stuff, right?

00:09:35 ◼   ► Um some friends of mine and I were gonna go camping.

00:09:38 ◼   ► Uh a friend I think had some like extended family with some farmland east

00:09:42 ◼   ► of the city.

00:09:43 ◼   ► We were gonna go out there and camp and a big storm came up.

00:09:46 ◼   ► It was, you know, late summer in the south.

00:09:48 ◼   ► We get these big storms sometimes that are really unpredictable.

00:09:51 ◼   ► And we weren't weather aware.

00:09:53 ◼   ► We wouldn't have smartphones and have a weather radio.

00:09:55 ◼   ► And so we realized like, okay, this is gonna be bad.

00:09:59 ◼   ► We should like go somewhere.

00:10:01 ◼   ► We don't need to be in the middle of this field.

00:10:04 ◼   ► And uh we were driving we're gonna drive back to town and it just

00:10:08 ◼   ► like I mean it's like all hell was breaking loose.

00:10:10 ◼   ► And I was in a buddy of mine suburban, like the four of us

00:10:14 ◼   ► were in there And it we couldn't see anything.

00:10:17 ◼   ► The wind was just unbelievable.

00:10:18 ◼   ► It was pitch black.

00:10:20 ◼   ► It was like it was like, hey, there's a there's a gas station, like

00:10:22 ◼   ► a you know, like half torn down, like abandoned gas station.

00:10:25 ◼   ► Uh let's just pull in behind here, you know, get real close to the

00:10:28 ◼   ► building and just wait this out.

00:10:30 ◼   ► And we had been there, I don't know, not even a minute or two,

00:10:36 ◼   ► and just the loudest

00:10:39 ◼   ► wind and the weirdest feeling I've ever experienced occurred.

00:10:43 ◼   ► And it was like very clearly like uh some sort of something bad was

00:10:48 ◼   ► happening.

00:10:48 ◼   ► Oh like a pressure drop kind of thing.

00:10:51 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:10:52 ◼   ► And uh you know, that lasted for uh I don't know, less than a

00:10:56 ◼   ► minute and then it was still dark and then, you know, once the storm

00:10:58 ◼   ► kind of subsided, we came out from around the back of the building and

00:11:02 ◼   ► the front of the gas station, like the you know I don't know what

00:11:06 ◼   ► it's called, like you go the the gas pumps and like the overhead things

00:11:09 ◼   ► you don't get rained on.

00:11:10 ◼   ► Like an awning.

00:11:11 ◼   ► The awning, the portico was destroyed and like very clearly like whoops with the

00:11:19 ◼   ► pressure differential had been a tornado went across the front of the building and

00:11:23 ◼   ► we were parked right next to it behind it and thankfully we were okay

00:11:27 ◼   ► but it was really scary and it was one of those things like we

00:11:30 ◼   ► drove back and no one said anything.

00:11:32 ◼   ► You know, like if you ever have a close call and accident like in

00:11:35 ◼   ► in traffic, you like turn your music off and just drive home quietly.

00:11:38 ◼   ► Um it was one of those.

00:11:40 ◼   ► Super scary.

00:11:41 ◼   ► I've never had that experience, but I can understand it.

00:11:47 ◼   ► So I've never had any of these experiences, if I'm being completely honest with

00:11:50 ◼   ► you.

00:11:50 ◼   ► I've never seen a gas station torn apart by a tornado or whatever.

00:11:55 ◼   ► Um

00:11:56 ◼   ► I don't know if this is a Steven thing, uh, but it it turns

00:12:00 ◼   ► out it is.

00:12:01 ◼   ► Can be sometimes.

00:12:02 ◼   ► Mm-hmm.

00:12:03 ◼   ► So yes, I am Skyworn certified.

00:12:06 ◼   ► Uh Yeah.

00:12:06 ◼   ► Is that's different to weather aware.

00:12:08 ◼   ► Um I'm the most weather aware.

00:12:11 ◼   ► Okay.

00:12:11 ◼   ► I guess.

00:12:12 ◼   ► I'm trained to be weather aware.

00:12:13 ◼   ► I'm fixing a broken link in a twenty thirteen blog post.

00:12:16 ◼   ► Here we go.

00:12:17 ◼   ► Why?

00:12:18 ◼   ► Because it's broken.

00:12:20 ◼   ► Bloggers have a sickness.

00:12:22 ◼   ► I'm also updating to the new Check the Weather website because we changed URLs.

00:12:25 ◼   ► Uh see, but that doesn't make any sense because now you're erasing history.

00:12:30 ◼   ► Okay.

00:12:31 ◼   ► I won't tell you.

00:12:32 ◼   ► There is no you know now if you link to it, it's where are

00:12:35 ◼   ► we going now?

00:12:35 ◼   ► You know what I mean?

00:12:36 ◼   ► It's like look at this thing.

00:12:38 ◼   ► Could be.

00:12:39 ◼   ► Nevertheless.

00:12:40 ◼   ► Anyways, that is follow up.

00:12:42 ◼   ► Okay.

00:12:42 ◼   ► We have done a follow up.

00:12:45 ◼   ► Okay.

00:12:46 ◼   ► So I've been using the iPhone Duo for a week now.

00:12:49 ◼   ► I have a second one.

00:12:50 ◼   ► I have two.

00:12:51 ◼   ► Wow.

00:12:53 ◼   ► It's off.

00:12:54 ◼   ► Uh I haven't done anything with it.

00:12:56 ◼   ► It's a review unit from Apple.

00:12:58 ◼   ► Um it's the blue one, which is nice to see and to ha to

00:13:01 ◼   ► like see the colour and stuff, but like I don't not entirely sure what

00:13:04 ◼   ► what to do with it yet.

00:13:06 ◼   ► But I'll work out something, you know.

00:13:07 ◼   ► But I've just been spending time with my one.

00:13:10 ◼   ► Um do you have an iPhone duo yet?

00:13:13 ◼   ► I do.

00:13:14 ◼   ► Okay.

00:13:14 ◼   ► You do owe.

00:13:15 ◼   ► I do owe.

00:13:18 ◼   ► My Apple store pre-order got delayed out because I was on that vacation and

00:13:22 ◼   ► I wrote about it, but I couldn't.

00:13:24 ◼   ► It was coming uh the end of November, early December.

00:13:28 ◼   ► I did end up getting a Best Buy pre-order for November third.

00:13:31 ◼   ► And that's I still have that.

00:13:33 ◼   ► But I was like, you know what?

00:13:34 ◼   ► Let me see if I can just get lucky at the Apple store.

00:13:38 ◼   ► And so Monday, Tuesday, one day this week, Tuesday, I had breakfast with a

00:13:42 ◼   ► friend of mine right across the street from the Apple store.

00:13:45 ◼   ► And so we wrapped up and I was like, Oh, the store opens in

00:13:48 ◼   ► forty five minutes.

00:13:49 ◼   ► Um, let me just go over there and just I'll be there when they

00:13:52 ◼   ► open and sit in my truck and like ha you know, th thirty minutes

00:13:57 ◼   ► till and like other cars were pulling up.

00:13:58 ◼   ► And I was like, No, no, no, no, no.

00:14:00 ◼   ► No, no, no.

00:14:00 ◼   ► I was here first.

00:14:01 ◼   ► And so I got out of my truck.

00:14:02 ◼   ► I was the first one in line at the Apple store, which is the

00:14:05 ◼   ► most cringe thing I maybe have ever done.

00:14:07 ◼   ► I d I felt so awkward.

00:14:08 ◼   ► So awkward.

00:14:09 ◼   ► You've never done it?

00:14:10 ◼   ► No.

00:14:11 ◼   ► They applauded when I walked in, Mike, and not because I'm a podcaster.

00:14:15 ◼   ► They're still applauding?

00:14:17 ◼   ► I was just coming in.

00:14:18 ◼   ► What if I'm so many days later now?

00:14:20 ◼   ► I wanted so many days.

00:14:21 ◼   ► I wanted to buy a USB C cable and walk out just to spite

00:14:24 ◼   ► the applause, you know?

00:14:25 ◼   ► Like you thought I was doing something big.

00:14:27 ◼   ► You would have been the loot, but you were though.

00:14:29 ◼   ► You did something a very big.

00:14:32 ◼   ► Tell them what you did.

00:14:33 ◼   ► There were it turns out there were three duos in stock that morning.

00:14:37 ◼   ► So I have since I talked about this on Mac Break Weekly earlier this

00:14:41 ◼   ► week.

00:14:42 ◼   ► Um, and someone emailed me who works in the Apple store and said how

00:14:44 ◼   ► it how it's working is they get a very small number a day and

00:14:48 ◼   ► not even every day that they're they're very they're trickling in.

00:14:53 ◼   ► And they they'll sell if you're there early.

00:14:56 ◼   ► And if they have more than that or no one is there for some

00:14:59 ◼   ► reason, then they put them up for, you know, order for pickup.

00:15:03 ◼   ► Which interesting I have not seen one for I was looking every day.

00:15:06 ◼   ► There was one like in Little Rock, which is like two hours away, and

00:15:11 ◼   ► then one in St.

00:15:12 ◼   ► Louis.

00:15:12 ◼   ► I was like, Well, I'm not uh I'm not driving five hours to get

00:15:15 ◼   ► get this phone.

00:15:15 ◼   ► So anyway, Did you consider the Little Rock one?

00:15:18 ◼   ► I did.

00:15:19 ◼   ► Um but it wasn't a day where I like had four hours to go

00:15:24 ◼   ► there and back.

00:15:25 ◼   ► Um if it had been like on Saturday or something, like on a weekend,

00:15:28 ◼   ► I maybe I would have done it.

00:15:29 ◼   ► But um

00:15:30 ◼   ► anyways, so I get in, he's like, Great, you're the first one.

00:15:34 ◼   ► I was like, what do you have?

00:15:36 ◼   ► And I really wanted the white one.

00:15:38 ◼   ► I really don't like the blue.

00:15:40 ◼   ► And I panicked.

00:15:42 ◼   ► They had three models.

00:15:43 ◼   ► They had uh uh two blue 512s,

00:15:47 ◼   ► and they had a white one.

00:15:51 ◼   ► In the two terabyte model.

00:15:53 ◼   ► Mm-hmm.

00:15:54 ◼   ► Mm-hmm.

00:15:56 ◼   ► And I realized I can't really waver because there's someone already helping the person

00:16:01 ◼   ► behind me.

00:16:02 ◼   ► I was like, well, if they make their decision quickly, like, ah, freaked out.

00:16:06 ◼   ► So I bought the two terabyte one.

00:16:09 ◼   ► Now I took with me the phone I was gonna trade in with my

00:16:13 ◼   ► Apple pre-order, which was helped.

00:16:15 ◼   ► Um, but I've kept my Best Buy pre-order, which is a 256.

00:16:20 ◼   ► And my plan is when that comes in, hopefully next week, I'll pick it

00:16:24 ◼   ► up.

00:16:24 ◼   ► I'm gonna return this very expensive two terabyte model.

00:16:28 ◼   ► Um But uh yeah, so I've had a duo for a couple of days.

00:16:32 ◼   ► Uh uh, you know, just a duo of days

00:16:36 ◼   ► if you will.

00:16:37 ◼   ► Mm-hmm.

00:16:38 ◼   ► Um I will.

00:16:39 ◼   ► Uh like you, I think everyone in my life has asked me what it's

00:16:43 ◼   ► like.

00:16:44 ◼   ► And it really garners attention.

00:16:47 ◼   ► It's been a very like hectic week for me.

00:16:49 ◼   ► I've been out and about more than normal.

00:16:51 ◼   ► And every time like you know, like last night I was setting up something

00:16:56 ◼   ► with somebody for like a breakfast and I pulled it out to look at

00:16:59 ◼   ► my calendar and they were like, Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, stop.

00:17:02 ◼   ► Like what is this?

00:17:03 ◼   ► What is this about?

00:17:05 ◼   ► Um and uh my thoughts are early, but basically that this phone is really

00:17:09 ◼   ► weird and I like a lot of it, but iOS feels incredibly sloppy in

00:17:15 ◼   ► places.

00:17:16 ◼   ► And that's a little frustrating to me.

00:17:19 ◼   ► My current pet peeve is if you're in messages, so like uh everyone's seen

00:17:25 ◼   ► this, the controls that are at the bottom end up on the side.

00:17:29 ◼   ► Well, also some controls that are at the top and End up on the

00:17:32 ◼   ► side.

00:17:33 ◼   ► Which doesn't make any sense to me.

00:17:35 ◼   ► And in messages, that means the send button and the FaceTime button are very

00:17:41 ◼   ► close to each other.

00:17:43 ◼   ► In particular, if you're running a live activity, say listening to music or a

00:17:47 ◼   ► podcast.

00:17:48 ◼   ► I have twice faced um somebody I didn't mean to.

00:17:53 ◼   ► And twice close.

00:17:55 ◼   ► And twice it's somebody who I have never and would not FaceTime with because

00:18:00 ◼   ► like we're not like I basically just FaceTime with like family and case.

00:18:05 ◼   ► You're just like your eyes closed when you hit the bottom.

00:18:07 ◼   ► I don't know.

00:18:08 ◼   ► I'm just chunking and jiving and FaceTiming people.

00:18:11 ◼   ► So some of that like it just it feels weird in places.

00:18:16 ◼   ► Um, you know, and look, uh, we talked about this on Mac break, but

00:18:19 ◼   ► a lottery viewers harp on the third-party app situation, which I think is a

00:18:23 ◼   ► problem of Apple's okay.

00:18:25 ◼   ► Even but even now, like

00:18:28 ◼   ► the third party apps that support it, I think will continue to get tweaked.

00:18:32 ◼   ► Um

00:18:34 ◼   ► I mean certainly even stuff that we're working on, right?

00:18:36 ◼   ► It's like now that we have them in hand, it's like oh okay, like

00:18:39 ◼   ► this doesn't actually Like maybe it made sense in the simulator, but when it's

00:18:44 ◼   ► in your hand, it's just different, right?

00:18:46 ◼   ► Hmm.

00:18:49 ◼   ► But yeah, I mean, it's I think I'm in the camp of people who

00:18:53 ◼   ► would be okay with just the outside part of the phone like just a

00:18:56 ◼   ► wide short iPhone air, which is weird because I despise the squatty iPod Nano.

00:19:04 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:19:05 ◼   ► But it sounds like your complaints are about the outside more than Oh my

00:19:09 ◼   ► complaints are Apple should put buttons in places that make more sense, mostly.

00:19:13 ◼   ► Um like like in messages, like if I have you up, like it's your

00:19:17 ◼   ► name and there's a bunch of space between you and the camera.

00:19:21 ◼   ► Like put FaceTime up there.

00:19:22 ◼   ► It's like that's kind of like a destructive action if you don't mean to

00:19:26 ◼   ► do it.

00:19:26 ◼   ► So um I will say I I talked to you about this yesterday.

00:19:31 ◼   ► I've been a little bit flummoxed with the shutting the phone doesn't lock it.

00:19:36 ◼   ► And people I'm inherent this.

00:19:38 ◼   ► People were having this problem.

00:19:39 ◼   ► And and like I think it might just be like how do people handle

00:19:42 ◼   ► their phones before?

00:19:44 ◼   ► Like I think I don't know what you'd have ever done, but m in

00:19:49 ◼   ► with any iPhone, before I lock the iPhone I always return to the home

00:19:52 ◼   ► screen.

00:19:53 ◼   ► It's just a habit that I have.

00:19:55 ◼   ► And so maybe that habit means that I don't feel this problem on the

00:19:59 ◼   ► duo.

00:20:00 ◼   ► I'm not just like doing a thing and and like closing the iPhone.

00:20:04 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:20:05 ◼   ► I'm like setting it back to a neutral state first.

00:20:08 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:20:09 ◼   ► Maybe that helps me.

00:20:10 ◼   ► Because you can end up in a state where like you're doing something accidentally

00:20:13 ◼   ► with a touch because it's closed or your phone's still actually unlocked.

00:20:17 ◼   ► So I tried for a day the the shortcut that's going around where you

00:20:21 ◼   ► it's just two actions.

00:20:22 ◼   ► It's like when iPhone closes or like when the screen closes, lock the phone.

00:20:28 ◼   ► Yeah um so I tried that for a day and today I'm trying not

00:20:31 ◼   ► that.

00:20:32 ◼   ► I've disabled it, like try to use it kind of the way it was

00:20:35 ◼   ► designed.

00:20:36 ◼   ► And the trick is Robles kind of adapted it in a way that I

00:20:39 ◼   ► thought was quite clever, which was if an app is open, don't do it.

00:20:44 ◼   ► Mm.

00:20:46 ◼   ► I didn't see that.

00:20:47 ◼   ► That may be Right, so but I don't know if that's gonna help you

00:20:49 ◼   ► for what what you care about.

00:20:51 ◼   ► Yeah, dunno.

00:20:52 ◼   ► Um The trick is just like to lock it with the button.

00:20:56 ◼   ► But then if you have rest finger to open, disable, then like it doesn't

00:21:01 ◼   ► always like it's just it's just kind of a there's a little bit of

00:21:04 ◼   ► a dance to this that I haven't quite internalized.

00:21:06 ◼   ► And I'm sure that when I do like it'll just be second nature.

00:21:11 ◼   ► But it's only two days in.

00:21:13 ◼   ► So we will uh we will see.

00:21:16 ◼   ► But um it's it's fascinating, man.

00:21:19 ◼   ► I mean it is it is the most interesting iPhone in as long as

00:21:22 ◼   ► I can remember.

00:21:23 ◼   ► I think I think it blows the 10 out of the water in terms

00:21:26 ◼   ► of how it changes iOS.

00:21:29 ◼   ► The 10 didn't really change it.

00:21:30 ◼   ► When you now when you look I and I know it did, but like

00:21:34 ◼   ► you compare 'em, it's like the All the 10 did was just you just

00:21:37 ◼   ► swipe up instead of pressing the home button.

00:21:39 ◼   ► Like where this is like, what if we just do everything differently?

00:21:42 ◼   ► Would you like to try everything different?

00:21:44 ◼   ► And say, oh yeah, I would.

00:21:46 ◼   ► I actually really would.

00:21:48 ◼   ► Yeah, it's um

00:21:51 ◼   ► It's just it's fascinating the some of the decisions that went into it.

00:21:55 ◼   ► And uh I think you and Jason were talking about like the volume buttons,

00:21:59 ◼   ► like how it's set um differently than the iPad in terms of the defaults,

00:22:04 ◼   ► like on the iPad, whichever one is up, is volume up.

00:22:07 ◼   ► And it's funny, I actually prefer the way the duo does it.

00:22:11 ◼   ► I didn't really think about it till I had six been using it.

00:22:15 ◼   ► Where like the button closest to the corner of the phone is volume up.

00:22:19 ◼   ► Regardless of orientation.

00:22:21 ◼   ► And I will say I I'm I'm struggling with this a little bit because

00:22:25 ◼   ► sometimes I'm hitting the wrong buttons still, even though I've done that thing where

00:22:29 ◼   ► it's like it did it does, you know, it's like it moves based on

00:22:32 ◼   ► what's up and what's down.

00:22:34 ◼   ► But it's it's not consistent for me.

00:22:36 ◼   ► I i I I think no matter what way I do it, sometimes I

00:22:39 ◼   ► do always get that wrong.

00:22:40 ◼   ► And but I do like the I think just in general, I like the

00:22:45 ◼   ► idea that it changes based upon device orientation.

00:22:49 ◼   ► As opposed to being a fixed being a fixed thing.

00:22:52 ◼   ► Because like sometimes I'm holding this iPhone upside down, essentially, and doing stuff.

00:22:58 ◼   ► And like that's not an accident.

00:22:59 ◼   ► It's a it's a choice that I'm making for certain reasons or whatever.

00:23:03 ◼   ► So So I gotta tell you, man.

00:23:06 ◼   ► I just gotta say, I am in love with this phone.

00:23:09 ◼   ► I love it.

00:23:11 ◼   ► I love it.

00:23:12 ◼   ► Like I can't remember feeling so positively about an iPhone.

00:23:17 ◼   ► Like it's been a very, very very long time.

00:23:20 ◼   ► I just love using it.

00:23:22 ◼   ► I love using the outside.

00:23:24 ◼   ► I love using the inside.

00:23:25 ◼   ► It is absolutely not perfect.

00:23:28 ◼   ► Like I have I have like a standing issue with the like kind of

00:23:34 ◼   ► washed out look of the inside display.

00:23:36 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:23:37 ◼   ► Uh I used mine outside yesterday during a cross country meet and it in

00:23:42 ◼   ► direct light, like it's great that it's not reflections.

00:23:45 ◼   ► But

00:23:47 ◼   ► the vibrancy difference between the inside and outside is shocking.

00:23:51 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:23:52 ◼   ► And in my studio I have horrible overhead lighting.

00:23:55 ◼   ► Uh-huh.

00:23:56 ◼   ► And that is a problem.

00:23:58 ◼   ► Like the the the the like bright overhead lights that I have, it washes

00:24:04 ◼   ► out the screen a lot.

00:24:06 ◼   ► But

00:24:07 ◼   ► the thing is I love the way it feels to you.

00:24:09 ◼   ► So and I I think like the the feeling of the of the matte

00:24:13 ◼   ► cover is wonderful.

00:24:15 ◼   ► So it's like it's you know, I I have problems with this device, but

00:24:18 ◼   ► man, I love using it.

00:24:19 ◼   ► I love using the outside display because it feels like some weird thing from

00:24:23 ◼   ► a science fiction movie.

00:24:24 ◼   ► Like it's just like it is just f just stupendous.

00:24:29 ◼   ► I can't at this point I still have no idea, but at this point

00:24:33 ◼   ► I can't imagine going back to the eighteen pro.

00:24:37 ◼   ► The eighteen pro feels really weird.

00:24:40 ◼   ► Oh yeah.

00:24:41 ◼   ► There's been lots of memes.

00:24:42 ◼   ► I don't know if you seen the memes.

00:24:44 ◼   ► Lots of

00:24:45 ◼   ► things which I like.

00:24:45 ◼   ► It's like a banana film.

00:24:47 ◼   ► It's like Yeah.

00:24:48 ◼   ► Like what are we doing?

00:24:49 ◼   ► Today I switched my um I sent a picture to you.

00:24:52 ◼   ► I I I've been using a fifteen Pro Max as my webcam for a

00:24:57 ◼   ► long time.

00:24:58 ◼   ► And I switched it to my seventeen pro.

00:25:00 ◼   ► So I was doing a bunch of stuff with a Pro Max today and

00:25:03 ◼   ► it's like, What is this thing?

00:25:04 ◼   ► Oh, I know.

00:25:05 ◼   ► Like that is just like ridiculous.

00:25:07 ◼   ► It's a big boy.

00:25:08 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:25:09 ◼   ► Yeah, it's very my little phone.

00:25:11 ◼   ► You got your little phone, little buddy.

00:25:12 ◼   ► Uh it's heavy.

00:25:13 ◼   ► That's the other thing like people I've handed it to.

00:25:15 ◼   ► It's the first thing they say.

00:25:16 ◼   ► It's like what Yeah, it was the first thing I noticed, but then I

00:25:19 ◼   ► realized for whatever reason I'm just using this phone two handed all the time.

00:25:23 ◼   ► So it doesn't really mean affect me so much.

00:25:26 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:25:26 ◼   ► Um for that reason.

00:25:27 ◼   ► And I also haven't found that to be as awkward as I would have

00:25:32 ◼   ► assumed.

00:25:32 ◼   ► Like just using it two handed all the time.

00:25:34 ◼   ► It's it's working pretty fine.

00:25:37 ◼   ► Mm-hmm.

00:25:38 ◼   ► The uh the going back to like the inside outside screen a little bit,

00:25:42 ◼   ► I think I'm using the outside screen most of the time.

00:25:46 ◼   ► Yeah, for sure.

00:25:47 ◼   ► But like this morning, right as I I was looking through the Notion document

00:25:51 ◼   ► on my phone and I opened it as like Oh snap.

00:25:54 ◼   ► Like this is this is it didn't snap.

00:25:55 ◼   ► That's a bad choice of words.

00:25:57 ◼   ► Um you can make it snap.

00:25:58 ◼   ► Oh crack.

00:26:01 ◼   ► Oh no, green line.

00:26:02 ◼   ► I mean But it was like, oh, this is like very usable.

00:26:07 ◼   ► And there's weirdness like my word the the icon spacing in portrait mode yeah

00:26:13 ◼   ► on the inside screen is like everything bad about the iPad home screen just

00:26:17 ◼   ► dialed up.

00:26:17 ◼   ► It's like well that is actually what an iPad mini looks like in portrait.

00:26:21 ◼   ► Oh I know.

00:26:21 ◼   ► I know.

00:26:22 ◼   ► One of my kids has an iPad mini.

00:26:23 ◼   ► And I actually went and got it, like out of the out of like

00:26:26 ◼   ► the little place we keep their iPads.

00:26:28 ◼   ► I was like, oh, this is never.

00:26:32 ◼   ► I did I did have a terrible thought that this phone maybe really benefits

00:26:39 ◼   ► from using the large icons without the labels.

00:26:43 ◼   ► Oh, I haven't tried that.

00:26:44 ◼   ► And I'm not usually that kind of person, but I'm trying it.

00:26:50 ◼   ► And it kinda especially on the inside screen, I think it's I kind of

00:26:53 ◼   ► wish you could set it separately, maybe.

00:26:56 ◼   ► Um, but yeah, trying to try and think what else.

00:26:59 ◼   ► I mean, it is uh I think from a hardware perspective, my big piece

00:27:04 ◼   ► of feedback so far is I wish the sides were flat and not

00:27:11 ◼   ► curved.

00:27:12 ◼   ► Okay.

00:27:13 ◼   ► Maybe just on the outside.

00:27:14 ◼   ► I don't know.

00:27:14 ◼   ► Something about it, like maybe it's the titanium.

00:27:17 ◼   ► I don't know.

00:27:18 ◼   ► But it can be a little bit tricky to like get pull them apart

00:27:23 ◼   ► like with just your thumb.

00:27:24 ◼   ► Like you kind of have to use both hands.

00:27:28 ◼   ► And maybe there are times where like I wish it was a little bit

00:27:31 ◼   ► easier to kind of get that started.

00:27:33 ◼   ► I don't know if flat sides would actually help with that.

00:27:34 ◼   ► Maybe it'd make it worse, but I don't think so.

00:27:36 ◼   ► I I think that the strength of the hinge is what makes it hard

00:27:39 ◼   ► to open.

00:27:40 ◼   ► And I just think that r you're not supposed to open this foam with

00:27:43 ◼   ► one hand.

00:27:44 ◼   ► Mm-hmm.

00:27:45 ◼   ► Like they w they want you to use both hands, I think to open

00:27:48 ◼   ► it up.

00:27:48 ◼   ► So you're being more careful with it.

00:27:50 ◼   ► When you close yours, where do you start?

00:27:52 ◼   ► Like where do you put pressure?

00:27:54 ◼   ► I naturally because I've been using falling phones for a long time, I I

00:27:58 ◼   ► push on the edge.

00:27:59 ◼   ► I don't push on the screen.

00:28:01 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:28:01 ◼   ► Just like the the bezel.

00:28:03 ◼   ► Yeah, 'cause that is the the theory one of the many theories as to

00:28:08 ◼   ► why these phones could be breaking, the the I will say very small amount

00:28:13 ◼   ► of them that are breaking Is that maybe people are pressing on the screen

00:28:17 ◼   ► too much when they're closing it and maybe putting too much force in.

00:28:20 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:28:20 ◼   ► But yeah, I kind of just naturally top bottom just kind of like push

00:28:24 ◼   ► the plastic kind of um that goes around the edge.

00:28:27 ◼   ► I found myself doing that very naturally because pushing on the screen felt real

00:28:31 ◼   ► bad.

00:28:31 ◼   ► It doesn't feel good.

00:28:32 ◼   ► Like you you feel like you're doing something you shouldn't.

00:28:35 ◼   ► Probably because you're doing something you shouldn't be doing.

00:28:38 ◼   ► Exactly.

00:28:38 ◼   ► I mean, but I I think you can do it and it should be

00:28:41 ◼   ► okay as you know, like it should be fine to do, right?

00:28:44 ◼   ► Like if that is a problem, then they need to go back to the

00:28:47 ◼   ► drawing board a little bit.

00:28:49 ◼   ► But I think just as like a general thing, if you're making a conscious

00:28:52 ◼   ► choice, I think the choice that you make should be to press on the

00:28:55 ◼   ► fully firm part rather than the slightly soft part of the of the screen

00:29:00 ◼   ► when you're when you're closing it.

00:29:02 ◼   ► But yeah, I've I've naturally found myself doing that anyway, so it isn't it

00:29:06 ◼   ► isn't so much of an issue for me.

00:29:08 ◼   ► I will say, you know, you're saying about sitting down like at w it

00:29:12 ◼   ► was the weekend and Adina was like I was doing something on my phone

00:29:15 ◼   ► or whatever, like opening and closing and you know, walking away.

00:29:18 ◼   ► And Idina's like, Whoa, you just look so serious with that one.

00:29:22 ◼   ► Like Like it just looks like a serious endeavor.

00:29:25 ◼   ► Like when you just like open it up and close it and like she's

00:29:28 ◼   ► like, Oh, it just looks like you're really doing stuff.

00:29:30 ◼   ► You know, it's like oh yeah, I guess I am doing stuff.

00:29:32 ◼   ► You're doing business.

00:29:33 ◼   ► I'm business on this phone.

00:29:35 ◼   ► I d I have not opened it in public except to show people.

00:29:38 ◼   ► I have used it in public.

00:29:40 ◼   ► I have not opened it in public yet.

00:29:42 ◼   ► I don't I don't know if I want to be that guy.

00:29:45 ◼   ► I think I will over time.

00:29:47 ◼   ► I just think at the moment at the moment I'm very self conscious when

00:29:51 ◼   ► using the phone.

00:29:52 ◼   ► Um but that is the case for any new thing that they do.

00:29:56 ◼   ► I was self conscious when using the iPhone for the first time.

00:29:59 ◼   ► Oh yeah.

00:29:59 ◼   ► I was self conscious, you know, with the Apple Watch, the AirPods.

00:30:03 ◼   ► I was self conscious the first time I took an iMac to a coffee

00:30:05 ◼   ► shop, you know, like just like the regular just like the regular things that

00:30:10 ◼   ► put that in there all the time.

00:30:12 ◼   ► Well, I mean it's normal now, you know, it's just like a regular thing

00:30:15 ◼   ► that you do and uh it just take these things just take a little

00:30:18 ◼   ► bit of time to get used to.

00:30:19 ◼   ► And and then it won't be so weird.

00:30:21 ◼   ► Like I see people using folding phones on public transport.

00:30:24 ◼   ► Like it's like a thing that happens.

00:30:26 ◼   ► And I note it because it's interesting to me, but I don't feel like

00:30:30 ◼   ► I see everyone being like, What is that?

00:30:32 ◼   ► But an iPhone is just different.

00:30:34 ◼   ► People know what this phone is and so you know, like I have um

00:30:38 ◼   ► like you mentioned, like I have people in my life who are like my

00:30:40 ◼   ► mum is like, Oh I can't wait to see it.

00:30:42 ◼   ► And I'm like, why?

00:30:44 ◼   ► But It's because it just permeates culture in a way that I'm sorry Samsung,

00:30:48 ◼   ► but Samsung doesn't, you know?

00:30:50 ◼   ► Or Google doesn't.

00:30:51 ◼   ► They're just not part of culture in that way, but Apple's are.

00:30:54 ◼   ► Droid does.

00:30:55 ◼   ► That's a different does.

00:30:56 ◼   ► Remember that?

00:30:57 ◼   ► Yep.

00:30:58 ◼   ► One of those ads was about copy and paste because it was before the

00:31:01 ◼   ► iPhone had copy and paste.

00:31:02 ◼   ► Well, 'cause Droid does, that's

00:31:06 ◼   ► yeah, uh it has permeated

00:31:09 ◼   ► co I mean that's just uh Apple's brand strength, right?

00:31:12 ◼   ► That even if you don't for the you know, the handful of people on

00:31:15 ◼   ► the planet who don't show, um, if you don't follow, you know, tech blogs

00:31:21 ◼   ► or anything, like this this phone makes like the news news, right?

00:31:25 ◼   ► Yeah, my mom was like, Oh, I saw about that on BBC News And

00:31:28 ◼   ► I'm like, Yeah, I'm sure you did.

00:31:29 ◼   ► I'm sure that you did.

00:31:30 ◼   ► Like I'm sure the morning shows like have a segment of somebody like trying

00:31:33 ◼   ► it for the first time.

00:31:34 ◼   ► Right.

00:31:34 ◼   ► And yeah, that is something that I mean, how powerful is it if you're

00:31:39 ◼   ► Apple that you have that sort of, I guess, awareness or cachet to your

00:31:43 ◼   ► brand?

00:31:44 ◼   ► Um, but yeah, it's little weird using it.

00:31:46 ◼   ► Um I did a tap to pay somewhere today.

00:31:49 ◼   ► I was like, Oh, this is I was like, Please don't look at please

00:31:51 ◼   ► don't look at my phone.

00:31:52 ◼   ► Please don't look at my phlease don't look at my phone.

00:31:54 ◼   ► Really palming my phone when I'm using Apple Pay.

00:31:57 ◼   ► Like I am like you have to really be paying attention to me to

00:32:01 ◼   ► understand what I'm doing.

00:32:03 ◼   ► Mm hmm.

00:32:05 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:32:05 ◼   ► What a problem.

00:32:06 ◼   ► I'm embarrassing my expensive phone.

00:32:08 ◼   ► But you know what we're saying.

00:32:09 ◼   ► It is a problem.

00:32:10 ◼   ► It's a real problem.

00:32:11 ◼   ► I mean, I I remember getting the iPhone uh I got it pretty early

00:32:15 ◼   ► on and

00:32:17 ◼   ► I the first time I or like I I went out with some friends

00:32:20 ◼   ► or whatever and like had it out and man, it was just like people

00:32:23 ◼   ► just like surround you, right?

00:32:25 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:32:26 ◼   ► Um this phone will have You have a lot of nerd friends though, you

00:32:28 ◼   ► know?

00:32:29 ◼   ► Um normal people, just strangers.

00:32:32 ◼   ► Hmm.

00:32:32 ◼   ► Strangers in the night.

00:32:34 ◼   ► I had you know I got a lot of messages uh from friends who

00:32:37 ◼   ► were like, Oh three thousand pounds.

00:32:39 ◼   ► I'm like, No, I didn't spend that.

00:32:41 ◼   ► I should say Steven did.

00:32:42 ◼   ► No, just temporarily.

00:32:43 ◼   ► But I didn't.

00:32:44 ◼   ► I I didn't do that, but Steven did do that.

00:32:47 ◼   ► That's what I should tell them and they'll be like, Who's Steven?

00:32:49 ◼   ► I'm like, J I know man, look him up.

00:32:51 ◼   ► He's the guy, he spent all that money's wild.

00:32:53 ◼   ► Look him up.

00:32:54 ◼   ► His site runs on a stack site generator.

00:32:57 ◼   ► That's how that's how he could afford this.

00:32:59 ◼   ► They all love that.

00:35:22 ◼   ► Bh.

00:35:23 ◼   ► Why would I do that?

00:35:24 ◼   ► Doesn't even fold, man.

00:35:26 ◼   ► Doesn't even fold, man.

00:35:27 ◼   ► Droid does.

00:35:28 ◼   ► Droid does.

00:35:30 ◼   ► I mean, John Voorhees folded an iPad once.

00:35:34 ◼   ► Do you remember that when he closed it in close it in the boot

00:35:36 ◼   ► of the car?

00:35:37 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:35:37 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:35:39 ◼   ► Oh John.

00:35:40 ◼   ► John.

00:35:42 ◼   ► Oh John.

00:35:43 ◼   ► I remember him telling us that I was like, I like I felt pain.

00:35:47 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:35:47 ◼   ► Uh such an easy mistake to make.

00:35:50 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:35:50 ◼   ► Like it yeah.

00:35:52 ◼   ► It happens.

00:35:52 ◼   ► It happens.

00:35:53 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:35:53 ◼   ► Uh so this was one of s you know, obviously several things Apple did

00:35:56 ◼   ► this week.

00:35:56 ◼   ► Uh new iPad mini.

00:35:58 ◼   ► Slightly larger display.

00:36:00 ◼   ► It's OLED now, twelve hundred nits, peak brightness.

00:36:04 ◼   ► But I want to see how you feel about this.

00:36:06 ◼   ► No promotion.

00:36:08 ◼   ► It's terrible.

00:36:09 ◼   ► What are we doing?

00:36:10 ◼   ► Unbelievable.

00:36:11 ◼   ► I'm so annoyed about this.

00:36:12 ◼   ► It's like why why did they decide to be so close?

00:36:18 ◼   ► Right?

00:36:18 ◼   ► It's like, why can't you just do the thing?

00:36:21 ◼   ► Because what this means now is we are many years away from the iPad

00:36:25 ◼   ► mini with OLED getting promotion.

00:36:27 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:36:28 ◼   ► Because they're not gonna touch this thing for years.

00:36:31 ◼   ► And it's so expensive.

00:36:34 ◼   ► Right?

00:36:34 ◼   ► Like why are we d I'm I as you can tell, I am very

00:36:38 ◼   ► frustrated about this.

00:36:39 ◼   ► I think that it is a it's a move that I don't understand.

00:36:43 ◼   ► Like I could understand it if they have made a decision that it's only

00:36:49 ◼   ► pro products that get promotion.

00:36:52 ◼   ► But that's not the truth anymore, right?

00:36:54 ◼   ► Like the regular iPhone 17 has promotion because it is 2026.

00:37:02 ◼   ► You should not be shipping 60 hertz displays anymore, and especially an OLED display,

00:37:08 ◼   ► like a beautiful OLED display and it's running at at sixty hertz.

00:37:13 ◼   ► I think is a is a real bummer because this iPad looks incredible.

00:37:18 ◼   ► Right?

00:37:18 ◼   ► It's super thin.

00:37:20 ◼   ► It's basically as thin as the thinnest product they've ever made.

00:37:24 ◼   ► M it is as light as the duo.

00:37:27 ◼   ► I think it's lighter than the duo by a little bit, if I'm remembering

00:37:30 ◼   ► rightly.

00:37:31 ◼   ► A twenty pro chip, water and dust resistance, like the the no speaker grills

00:37:37 ◼   ► on this it just is beautiful.

00:37:38 ◼   ► It's beautiful iPad and they're just missing out on that.

00:37:42 ◼   ► It's just one thing and it's not even like

00:37:46 ◼   ► it's I don't it's not it's not like if I was like, ah they

00:37:49 ◼   ► didn't put mag safe on this.

00:37:50 ◼   ► You know what I mean?

00:37:51 ◼   ► It's like, well that's that would be a silly thing to ask for.

00:37:54 ◼   ► Or if there's like I don't know, some other f some other feature, right?

00:37:57 ◼   ► Where it's like, Oh, you're really pushing it by asking for that.

00:38:00 ◼   ► I just don't think promotion is is the thing, you know?

00:38:05 ◼   ► So yeah.

00:38:06 ◼   ► I feel I feel a lot of feelings.

00:38:08 ◼   ► For so long the iPad mini has had those like weird trade-offs though.

00:38:12 ◼   ► Right?

00:38:12 ◼   ► I mean it feels like they're trying to walk the line of like it's

00:38:15 ◼   ► a niche product.

00:38:17 ◼   ► It's small but expensive.

00:38:19 ◼   ► Most people should probably just get a regular size iPad.

00:38:23 ◼   ► But uh yeah, it's a it's a it's a bit of a mess.

00:38:25 ◼   ► But then why did they make it the first one with OLED?

00:38:28 ◼   ► That's not the uh you know, like Yeah.

00:38:30 ◼   ► I I agree with you, but it's like I just it just makes me

00:38:33 ◼   ► sad.

00:38:34 ◼   ► A little bit.

00:38:35 ◼   ► I think it is really cool though that it brings water and dust resistance

00:38:39 ◼   ► to the iPad for the first time.

00:38:41 ◼   ► Yep.

00:38:41 ◼   ► Uh especially the mini where you know you may be more prone to carry

00:38:44 ◼   ► it more places than than a bigger tablet.

00:38:47 ◼   ► Uh it's weird though, because it's there's no speaker grills.

00:38:50 ◼   ► It's uh all behind the display.

00:38:53 ◼   ► I don't understand.

00:38:54 ◼   ► I think you said this on upgrade.

00:38:55 ◼   ► Phones have speaker grills.

00:38:57 ◼   ► Yeah, it doesn't make sense to me.

00:38:58 ◼   ► And people keep trying to explain it to me in in a ways that

00:39:01 ◼   ► are completely unsatisfying.

00:39:02 ◼   ► Where they're like, Well, a lot of work has to go into the ingress

00:39:06 ◼   ► point at the speaker grill.

00:39:07 ◼   ► It's like, Okay.

00:39:09 ◼   ► They do it on the phone.

00:39:10 ◼   ► You they do it on the phone.

00:39:11 ◼   ► So like why do they need to go to these lengths?

00:39:14 ◼   ► Because I I'm I have to assume the speaker isn't as good.

00:39:17 ◼   ► I have to assume this, right?

00:39:19 ◼   ► 'Cause otherwise this is what you would do with every product.

00:39:23 ◼   ► So or maybe you can't maybe it's better, but you can't fit it in

00:39:27 ◼   ► the iPhone.

00:39:28 ◼   ► I don't know.

00:39:28 ◼   ► I have not tried one of these.

00:39:30 ◼   ► I will be I would be keen to try one for that reason, like

00:39:33 ◼   ► comparing it to the because I have the the predecessor model, I think.

00:39:38 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:39:39 ◼   ► Or maybe there was an update in the middle or something.

00:39:41 ◼   ► Does yours do Apple Intelligence?

00:39:44 ◼   ► I don't know, man.

00:39:46 ◼   ► I I have not okay, I've not looked into that for the iPad that

00:39:50 ◼   ► we keep keeping the nursery for a white noise machine.

00:39:53 ◼   ► Gotcha.

00:39:54 ◼   ► Uh it's the iPad mini sixth generation, which is the previous one.

00:39:57 ◼   ► So

00:39:59 ◼   ► it that's the one I have.

00:40:00 ◼   ► They only did one version of that.

00:40:02 ◼   ► Yeah I mean hopefully

00:40:04 ◼   ► Pro one I don't think I have that one.

00:40:06 ◼   ► I think I have the sixth generation one.

00:40:07 ◼   ► So let's say that mine doesn't apple intelligence.

00:40:11 ◼   ► Well maybe it does, but I don't know that it does.

00:40:14 ◼   ► Yeah, so I it'll be it'll be very curious to see how it sounds,

00:40:17 ◼   ► to hear how it sounds.

00:40:18 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:40:19 ◼   ► Some of this isn't some of this also present in the home view.

00:40:23 ◼   ► Remember that thing that was announced that hasn't shipped?

00:40:25 ◼   ► Um I guess we'll be talking about that in a few weeks.

00:40:28 ◼   ► That's yeah, 'cause it's not because it just never ends, right?

00:40:31 ◼   ► It never ends.

00:40:32 ◼   ► Uh so yeah, I hope that dust water resistance makes it to more iPads.

00:40:37 ◼   ► I think that's really great.

00:40:38 ◼   ► Um

00:40:41 ◼   ► some other stuff to bring it in line, cameras on the landscape side supports

00:40:44 ◼   ► USB C uh and the pencil pro.

00:40:48 ◼   ► So yep.

00:40:49 ◼   ► I'm not in the market, but even uh even without a folding phone, like

00:40:55 ◼   ► I I always like the idea of the mini, but I always end up

00:40:59 ◼   ► wanting something a little bit bigger.

00:41:00 ◼   ► So Yeah, my honestly for me, like the mini is an amazing iPad, but

00:41:06 ◼   ► we're so close to the duo in size now that doesn't feel like I

00:41:11 ◼   ► would would want it for from my user.

00:41:13 ◼   ► I mean, they did make the screen a little bit bigger, it's eight point

00:41:16 ◼   ► five inches now, which is good, right?

00:41:18 ◼   ► Okay.

00:41:18 ◼   ► That is it's a great iPad.

00:41:20 ◼   ► And the iPad Mini is such an incredible iPad.

00:41:23 ◼   ► Um I do wanna have can I just throw one more please uh frustration

00:41:27 ◼   ► on the pile for the screen thing.

00:41:29 ◼   ► Please.

00:41:30 ◼   ► You can get a nanotexture screen.

00:41:32 ◼   ► Why are we going that far?

00:41:34 ◼   ► You know?

00:41:35 ◼   ► Like why why are we going that far but it doesn't have promotion?

00:41:39 ◼   ► Just put promotion on the more expensive one if you need to, you know?

00:41:43 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:41:44 ◼   ► My favorite detail is that if you get the most expensive one, you do

00:41:48 ◼   ► get a different processor.

00:41:50 ◼   ► Which is just brilliant.

00:41:51 ◼   ► You get a dual core dual sixteen core Neural Engine rather than a regular

00:41:55 ◼   ► sixteen core Neural Engine if you go for the five twelve gigabyte model.

00:41:58 ◼   ► Mm.

00:41:59 ◼   ► Which is just funny.

00:42:00 ◼   ► It's just is funny.

00:42:01 ◼   ► I understand how chip binning works, but it's just funny.

00:42:05 ◼   ► It is pretty uh hilarious that that's the like that's the difference?

00:42:12 ◼   ► Yeah it's like th it also has I think an extra GPU for which

00:42:17 ◼   ► I understand more, right?

00:42:18 ◼   ► Like but it's funny.

00:42:21 ◼   ► It's like, Oh, would you like the six d a second sixteen core neural

00:42:24 ◼   ► engine for your iPad mini?

00:42:25 ◼   ► And like the way that they try and like look at all this local

00:42:27 ◼   ► AI, you can do it.

00:42:28 ◼   ► No one it ain't happening on the iPad mini.

00:42:31 ◼   ► I've I've I feel confident in that.

00:42:33 ◼   ► Um I would love to be proven wrong.

00:42:36 ◼   ► But also, look, I do know that it might not be happening now, but

00:42:40 ◼   ► this product is gonna be this way for a long time.

00:42:42 ◼   ► So maybe in the next year or two, y y you will actually, if

00:42:45 ◼   ► you have this one, really benefit.

00:42:48 ◼   ► Like in the same way that do you remember when Apple had the increased

00:42:51 ◼   ► RAM on the one terabyte model of the iPad Pro, and then a couple

00:42:56 ◼   ► of years later it turned out that there were some benefits for that.

00:42:59 ◼   ► Like I think something in multitasking may have been better, but at least like

00:43:02 ◼   ► Procreate was better on the on the big one 'cause you have more layers

00:43:07 ◼   ► on it and stuff.

00:43:08 ◼   ► So like things come down the line that maybe don't make so much sense

00:43:12 ◼   ► right now.

00:43:12 ◼   ► They do.

00:43:13 ◼   ► And I would say right now a a dual sixteen core Neural Engine um

00:43:17 ◼   ► it doesn't really make sense to me on the iPad Mini.

00:43:19 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:43:22 ◼   ► Someone out there, man.

00:43:23 ◼   ► They're just expanding images.

00:43:26 ◼   ► They're doing Jinmoji super fast.

00:43:29 ◼   ► They're very excited.

00:43:30 ◼   ► I just don't know if I mean sh uh yeah, but I don't know

00:43:33 ◼   ► if the if the Neural Engine how important that is for those things.

00:43:37 ◼   ► No, th this what this really is is a product that is solving a

00:43:42 ◼   ► supply chain thing for them.

00:43:44 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:43:45 ◼   ► They're very good at that.

00:43:46 ◼   ► Because they've got these chips.

00:43:48 ◼   ► Right, that that didn't for whatever reason weren't able to be fully featured for

00:43:54 ◼   ► an iPhone.

00:43:55 ◼   ► And I mean, it's been a minute since the iPad mini has had like

00:43:59 ◼   ► the most up to date chip.

00:44:01 ◼   ► Right.

00:44:02 ◼   ► Uh and you're right, it will hang out for a while so like this

00:44:05 ◼   ► A twenty pro will be in the I've had mini for several years.

00:44:09 ◼   ► Now, which is good.

00:44:10 ◼   ► It means it gives longevity to a product, right?

00:44:13 ◼   ► Um, but they have these chips, they have this product, you put the two

00:44:16 ◼   ► together and everyone's happy.

00:44:18 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:44:18 ◼   ► I they do um they do find ways to use those chips now though.

00:44:23 ◼   ► Like that's for sure.

00:44:24 ◼   ► For sure.

00:44:24 ◼   ► They're putting them in everything.

00:44:26 ◼   ► And they've I mean look, and then the the state of the world with

00:44:29 ◼   ► chips and everything else right now, like you've gotta you gotta be as efficient

00:44:32 ◼   ► as possible with what you have.

00:44:34 ◼   ► Like maybe there was a time where these things would have sat around longer

00:44:37 ◼   ► or I don't know, been melted down or something.

00:44:40 ◼   ► Um I would also imagine that if the MacBook Neo gets the A twenty

00:44:45 ◼   ► pro at some point, whenever it does, my guess would be the SKUs for

00:44:51 ◼   ► that, like for that chip, would be very similar to this, that maybe they're

00:44:55 ◼   ► all bend or you know the they're Well yeah you're you're probably right, right?

00:44:59 ◼   ► The the cheaper one gets whatever and then the more expensive one gets the

00:45:03 ◼   ► extra GPU core on the Neural engine.

00:45:05 ◼   ► Mm-hmm.

00:45:05 ◼   ► Yeah, if they've got if they've got these around then um then it could

00:45:10 ◼   ► be uh could be something that we see.

00:45:12 ◼   ► Yeah, I think Mark Gurman said that he expects the next MacBook Neo in

00:45:17 ◼   ► the first half of next year, so that would be running

00:45:21 ◼   ► the A twenty pro, Right.

00:45:24 ◼   ► In that scenario, 'cause we're not gonna have a new chip before then.

00:45:27 ◼   ► No.

00:45:27 ◼   ► And so 'cause they what do they run now?

00:45:29 ◼   ► Is it the eighteen or the nineteen?

00:45:31 ◼   ► The eighteen, I believe.

00:45:32 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:45:33 ◼   ► I can't I I mean, look, maybe they'll do it on the A nineteen,

00:45:36 ◼   ► but I it seems more likely you'd do it on the A twenty.

00:45:38 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:45:39 ◼   ► Um, which would be great.

00:45:41 ◼   ► I mean, uh I think I think it's funny with the Neo now, like

00:45:44 ◼   ► Apple has more places to to put this.

00:45:47 ◼   ► It would significantly increase the RAM, I believe.

00:45:50 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:45:50 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:45:50 ◼   ► I think I cause uh twenty has much more RAM.

00:45:53 ◼   ► Six is it twelve gigs?

00:45:55 ◼   ► I think it's twelve.

00:45:56 ◼   ► My memory says it's twelve, but I'm not trusting that right now because it's

00:45:59 ◼   ► a twenty plate.

00:46:01 ◼   ► Twelve gigs.

00:46:02 ◼   ► Yeah, and that is a big what is it, eight?

00:46:05 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:46:05 ◼   ► Is on the so that's like fifty percent more RAM.

00:46:08 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:46:09 ◼   ► And that's the thing of like, what's that gonna do to the cost?

00:46:12 ◼   ► You know, like I mean we gonna go up.

00:46:14 ◼   ► Um but it would be, you know, hopefully that's what what ends up in

00:46:18 ◼   ► there at some point.

00:46:18 ◼   ► I think it's just a matter of time, right?

00:46:20 ◼   ► And and how often like what we don't know about the NEO is

00:46:26 ◼   ► what is the strategy moving forward.

00:46:29 ◼   ► There's just one, right?

00:46:30 ◼   ► One dot doesn't make a line.

00:46:32 ◼   ► Is it that it gets the A twenty pro and it gets updated kind

00:46:36 ◼   ► of every year and a half with whatever's current at the time?

00:46:38 ◼   ► Um is a little bit longer.

00:46:40 ◼   ► You know, is it different now that the world has changed since the Neo

00:46:43 ◼   ► was introduced.

00:46:45 ◼   ► Who knows?

00:46:46 ◼   ► Well I and also I Apple did not anticipate the success of the Neo

00:46:49 ◼   ► and that must have changed plans.

00:46:51 ◼   ► Absolutely.

00:46:52 ◼   ► I was in that scenario, I would be putting one out every year, essentially,

00:46:56 ◼   ► with new colours.

00:46:58 ◼   ► Mm-hmm.

00:46:59 ◼   ► Like that that would be my because it's like, well, you d this product

00:47:02 ◼   ► is a success, so let's keep revising it so every school year there's another

00:47:07 ◼   ► Neo to get.

00:47:08 ◼   ► Like th you know, you just keep for every you know, every year there

00:47:13 ◼   ► are kids that need to go to school.

00:47:15 ◼   ► Uh and so you just keep putting out new Neos, different colors, you put

00:47:19 ◼   ► in the the best chip that you can put in it with the stock

00:47:21 ◼   ► that you have available to you, and you just you keep rolling.

00:47:25 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:47:26 ◼   ► Someone's thinking a lot about that somewhere.

00:47:29 ◼   ► Someone's thinking a lot about that.

00:47:32 ◼   ► And I expect there are more people thinking about it than there were the

00:47:35 ◼   ► first time.

00:47:36 ◼   ► Maybe so.

00:47:38 ◼   ► Because that is like, you know, I mean we've it's Just rehashing previous conversations,

00:47:42 ◼   ► but that is like their biggest hit product in a long time.

00:47:46 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:47:46 ◼   ► Like of a product that is actually like, Oh, people really are excited about

00:47:51 ◼   ► this and want it.

00:47:52 ◼   ► Like and it's new.

00:47:54 ◼   ► Like I don't you know like I it it feels like it's been a

00:47:57 ◼   ► while since that has happened.

00:47:59 ◼   ► I would say the duo feels like a hit.

00:48:01 ◼   ► Um, but I don't know if they're selling them, you know?

00:48:04 ◼   ► Like I I in that people are excited about it and interested in it.

00:48:09 ◼   ► Um but I can't tell that the the hitness is actually translating to sales,

00:48:16 ◼   ► but that definitely happened for the Neo.

00:48:20 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:48:20 ◼   ► I've seen 'em.

00:48:21 ◼   ► Like I've I see I've seen Neos in the world.

00:48:24 ◼   ► Um I love that compu I love the look of that computer.

00:48:27 ◼   ► It's great.

00:48:27 ◼   ► Like I got the blue one.

00:48:28 ◼   ► It's a beautiful computer.

00:48:29 ◼   ► It's it's fantastic.

00:48:31 ◼   ► It's downstairs, right?

00:48:31 ◼   ► It's downstairs.

00:48:33 ◼   ► Actually I think it's up here because uh I need to remake one of

00:48:36 ◼   ► my screenshot library screenshots.

00:48:40 ◼   ► Um, and that's the machine I do that on.

00:48:42 ◼   ► But uh yeah, go iPad mini.

00:48:44 ◼   ► It's for somebody, someone's excited.

00:48:46 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:48:47 ◼   ► Oh, I mean without the duo uh mini heads out there.

00:48:50 ◼   ► I would have been buying this thing, like for sure.

00:48:53 ◼   ► Um Um I I love the iPad mini.

00:48:55 ◼   ► It is a great product.

00:48:56 ◼   ► I'll probably I would probably have bought this and traded in my eleven inch

00:49:00 ◼   ► pro, I think.

00:49:01 ◼   ► Really?

00:49:02 ◼   ► Um are you just not using it?

00:49:04 ◼   ► N I do, but I use it just for media.

00:49:07 ◼   ► Hmm.

00:49:08 ◼   ► And the iPad mini is the best media thing.

00:49:11 ◼   ► You put an OLED display on it?

00:49:12 ◼   ► I mean it's not gonna be as good.

00:49:13 ◼   ► I would have had to have tried it and I would have thought about

00:49:16 ◼   ► it.

00:49:16 ◼   ► But I'm not uh I ca I I've taken my iPad Pro back out

00:49:20 ◼   ► of the magic keyboard case now and it's back in the smart folio.

00:49:24 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:49:25 ◼   ► Um and and I'm and I love it.

00:49:27 ◼   ► Like I love that iPad.

00:49:28 ◼   ► I think it's I think it's iPad they've ever made.

00:49:31 ◼   ► That one specifically.

00:49:33 ◼   ► But I'm not using it for the majority of stuff that it does.

00:49:37 ◼   ► I actually have been meaning to turn off uh the windowing on it.

00:49:40 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:49:41 ◼   ► 'Cause it's just it's just not what I want out of that iPad right

00:49:44 ◼   ► now.

00:49:45 ◼   ► Sure.

00:49:45 ◼   ► Like I I want it more for just watching TV stuff than I want

00:49:49 ◼   ► it for working because now I work right I've I've been you know, if

00:49:54 ◼   ► I'm doing work I'm doing it on my m on my MacBook, but now

00:49:56 ◼   ► I have an iPhone that is like significantly better for work.

00:49:59 ◼   ► And so it's like what what is my iPad for now, you know?

00:50:02 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:50:03 ◼   ► The uh that is one thing um about the duo we didn't touch on,

00:50:06 ◼   ► but it it fits with the iPad.

00:50:08 ◼   ► I really like the multitasking on the inner display.

00:50:11 ◼   ► Oh my god.

00:50:12 ◼   ► I'm wanting to and I'm planning to make some like Instagram videos, reels or

00:50:17 ◼   ► whatever just showing like the work that I'm doing.

00:50:20 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:50:21 ◼   ► 'Cause I think people might be interested in that.

00:50:23 ◼   ► But like I am I am like legitimately using this thing in the landscape.

00:50:28 ◼   ► Uh sorry, the um the little laptop shape thing.

00:50:31 ◼   ► Really?

00:50:32 ◼   ► Posture.

00:50:32 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:50:32 ◼   ► And I'm typing on it and it's brilliant.

00:50:36 ◼   ► I have mostly shown that to people as a joke.

00:50:39 ◼   ► Uh maybe I should take it more.

00:50:41 ◼   ► You should try it.

00:50:42 ◼   ► It the spacing that they have put on that keyboard, it is perfect for

00:50:47 ◼   ► hump peg typing.

00:50:48 ◼   ► Like it's it I like they've made some decisions, right?

00:50:52 ◼   ► Like I think naturally you would put more buttons on that keyboard.

00:50:56 ◼   ► Like you'd have like a like a backspace and stuff, like in the space

00:51:00 ◼   ► that you would expect it to be, but they have not done that.

00:51:03 ◼   ► And I think they have not done that so it works better for being

00:51:07 ◼   ► a little laptop uh keyboard.

00:51:09 ◼   ► Hmm.

00:51:09 ◼   ► Hm.

00:51:10 ◼   ► The you know, like the backspace is in place of shift rather than you

00:51:14 ◼   ► know above P or whatever.

00:51:15 ◼   ► Right.

00:51:16 ◼   ► The thing that uh that I like though is the dragging the app to

00:51:21 ◼   ► one side or the other.

00:51:22 ◼   ► Oh, it's brilliant.

00:51:23 ◼   ► Then the home screen shows up on the other.

00:51:25 ◼   ► I think it's better than basically anything they've tried on the iPad in terms

00:51:30 ◼   ► of multitasking.

00:51:32 ◼   ► I mean, the multi-winner thing is cool if that's what you want, but this

00:51:35 ◼   ► should be the basic version of multitasking on the iPad.

00:51:39 ◼   ► It's it's sort of the best version of split screen that we've had.

00:51:43 ◼   ► You can lock them together still for people who want it, but it's so

00:51:48 ◼   ► understandable what it's doing.

00:51:50 ◼   ► And I I hope that they Capitalize on that elsewhere.

00:51:54 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:51:55 ◼   ► And I would like to see them add slideover to this.

00:51:58 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:51:59 ◼   ► Like to the duo?

00:52:00 ◼   ► That would like on the inside?

00:52:03 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:52:03 ◼   ► So I can have two apps and also a slideover app.

00:52:06 ◼   ► Like I I would like that.

00:52:07 ◼   ► I just think that would be why not, right?

00:52:09 ◼   ► So I can just peek at something and and get it or throw it

00:52:12 ◼   ► away again.

00:52:12 ◼   ► Like I I don't want them to go crazy with this.

00:52:15 ◼   ► Like I really don't.

00:52:16 ◼   ► I like the restraint, but I think it would be fun.

00:52:19 ◼   ► I mean I guess the thing you can do is you can do the

00:52:23 ◼   ► swipe multitasking on the individual panes.

00:52:26 ◼   ► Did you know that?

00:52:28 ◼   ► Hmm.

00:52:28 ◼   ► Oh.

00:52:29 ◼   ► Do you know like on an iPhone when you swipe the the like the

00:52:31 ◼   ► home bar and it goes backwards and forwards between the apps that you're using.

00:52:34 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:52:35 ◼   ► You can do that on each side independently.

00:52:37 ◼   ► What hang on, let me try.

00:52:39 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:52:39 ◼   ► So you can swap between apps that you've been using.

00:52:43 ◼   ► Because really it works just like two iPhones.

00:52:46 ◼   ► And like and so they've maintained that.

00:52:49 ◼   ► So that's nice.

00:52:50 ◼   ► But sometimes I would maybe want to just quickly have a look at another

00:52:54 ◼   ► app and swipe it away again.

00:52:55 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:52:57 ◼   ► Oh yeah, that's that's clever.

00:52:59 ◼   ► Isn't This is such this is so much better than what they've done elsewhere.

00:53:02 ◼   ► They have thought this out to a very nice degree, I will say.

00:53:06 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:53:07 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:53:07 ◼   ► Hopefully they uh they they continue to work on the iPad.

00:53:12 ◼   ► 'Cause like on the mini, right?

00:53:13 ◼   ► This is like I mean it's the same size basically.

00:53:15 ◼   ► But like the mini or even, you know, just casual people.

00:53:18 ◼   ► Like the the kind of the problem I have with multitasking on the iPad

00:53:21 ◼   ► right now is you have to be a power user to understand it.

00:53:26 ◼   ► 'Cause it's look, I'm gonna be like technically you can do all of this

00:53:30 ◼   ► on an iPad.

00:53:31 ◼   ► Like you can just pick up a window and you can drag it to

00:53:33 ◼   ► the side and it will snap to half.

00:53:35 ◼   ► Yeah, but it's like you can do it.

00:53:37 ◼   ► This is so much It's just not as simple.

00:53:39 ◼   ► But like you can have this experience, but you also but to have that

00:53:45 ◼   ► experience, you also have to deal with the multi-window thing.

00:53:48 ◼   ► Right.

00:53:48 ◼   ► So it's like you can do this, you can do split screen.

00:53:52 ◼   ► Like it's a thing that you can do but then you're also dealing with

00:53:56 ◼   ► a lot of the other complexity that that they have.

00:54:00 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:54:00 ◼   ► Um, which I understand why some people don't want to deal with that.

00:54:05 ◼   ► I think if you do, the iPad I think iPad OS multitasking is the

00:54:09 ◼   ► best it has ever been.

00:54:11 ◼   ► And it it really makes using the iPad a joy.

00:54:15 ◼   ► But I you know, I just I like to move around um in the

00:54:18 ◼   ► the devices that I'm using.

00:54:20 ◼   ► And I had a real good run using the iPad as a work machine

00:54:23 ◼   ► like in since twenty six came out.

00:54:26 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:54:26 ◼   ► Um but now I've now I've kind of shifted back to the Mac again.

00:54:31 ◼   ► Um and now I'm shifting to the duo.

00:54:34 ◼   ► Like I this is what I enjoy, right?

00:54:36 ◼   ► Like I like to be kind of like nimble and move around from device

00:54:39 ◼   ► to device.

00:54:40 ◼   ► And right now I'm I'm just using my I use my iPad every single

00:54:44 ◼   ► day, but I'm just watching video on it.

00:54:45 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:54:46 ◼   ► Zoe points out in Discord, remember when the plus phones had a whole bunch

00:54:49 ◼   ► of extra buttons?

00:54:50 ◼   ► Oh yeah.

00:54:51 ◼   ► There was a version was gonna be a thing.

00:54:53 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:54:53 ◼   ► Then there was there was a version that had like paste buttons and stuff.

00:54:57 ◼   ► It was very strange.

00:54:58 ◼   ► The uh the home screen rotated.

00:55:01 ◼   ► Um I'm glad some of that's uh some of that was ahead of its

00:55:04 ◼   ► time, I guess.

00:55:05 ◼   ► But yeah, slide over back now.

00:55:07 ◼   ► It's back now.

00:55:08 ◼   ► Slideover would be really cool.

00:55:09 ◼   ► Um just to, you know, have have a video up, have a spreadsheet up

00:55:14 ◼   ► and like be able to bounce into basically I always kept in slide over

00:55:19 ◼   ► messages and one password.

00:55:21 ◼   ► Like those are the two things I kinda want all the time.

00:55:24 ◼   ► And then I'm doing whatever else I want.

00:55:26 ◼   ► And it would be cool for that to be on the inner display and

00:55:29 ◼   ► if you could keep your slide over apps sort of always in slide over

00:55:35 ◼   ► so you don't have to like tear it down and rebuild it every time.

00:55:38 ◼   ► Um but they'll get there and they may add those things, right?

00:55:41 ◼   ► I mean it we have seen from the iPad Apple is not shy about

00:55:46 ◼   ► changing the multitasking scheme on these devices.

00:55:49 ◼   ► I cannot wait for twenty seven point three.

00:55:53 ◼   ► Like have they put anything in twenty seven point three that's new for the

00:55:56 ◼   ► duo?

00:55:56 ◼   ► Is it in beta yet?

00:55:58 ◼   ► No.

00:56:00 ◼   ► Maybe soon.

00:56:01 ◼   ► Yeah, it's close though, I expect.

00:56:04 ◼   ► Because that's what the two is out.

00:56:05 ◼   ► That's what the and the Touch MacBook Pros are running twenty seven point three.

00:56:08 ◼   ► Are they?

00:56:09 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:56:10 ◼   ► So that's gonna come within the next week then?

00:56:13 ◼   ► Um yeah, I think so.

00:56:16 ◼   ► Well maybe 274 then.

00:56:18 ◼   ► Maybe 273 won't have anything in it.

00:56:20 ◼   ► It maybe really don't.

00:56:22 ◼   ► Man, they're all over the place.

00:56:23 ◼   ► The software team must be pulling their hair out.

00:56:25 ◼   ► Dude, I know.

00:56:25 ◼   ► And like even like in the app development world it's like you have 271,

00:56:29 ◼   ► which does certain things on the duo.

00:56:30 ◼   ► 272's the full one.

00:56:33 ◼   ► Uh it's it's been it's been a little yeah, it's been a little messy.

00:56:38 ◼   ► Mm-hmm.

00:56:39 ◼   ► It'll settle down though.

00:56:40 ◼   ► I think I think once these these products launch, then we'll get back to

00:56:45 ◼   ► sort of the normal cadence and I can't wait.

00:56:48 ◼   ► No, I I want faster cadence.

00:56:49 ◼   ► They've got to keep putting new features in the operating system now.

00:56:53 ◼   ► We're gonna talk about that.

00:56:54 ◼   ► We're gonna talk about it if if uh if Apple's changed forever.

00:56:58 ◼   ► Maybe in a minute.

00:57:01 ◼   ► This episode of Connected is brought to you by Insert Affiliate.

00:57:06 ◼   ► If you run a mobile app and you want creators and influencers to help

00:57:09 ◼   ► you grow your subscriber base, Insert Affiliate makes it easy to see who's actually

00:57:14 ◼   ► bringing in paying customers.

00:57:16 ◼   ► It's an affiliate and creator marketing program built specifically for mobile apps.

00:57:22 ◼   ► Because getting creators to promote your app is one thing.

00:57:25 ◼   ► Knowing who's driving subscriptions and how much they're owed is another.

00:57:30 ◼   ► So here's how it works.

00:57:31 ◼   ► Each creator gets their own unique link or short code.

00:57:35 ◼   ► So when someone they refer subscribes or makes a purchase in your app, Insert

00:57:39 ◼   ► Affiliate automatically tracks it and credits the correct creator.

00:57:43 ◼   ► No more guessing where your subscribers came from or trying to work out who

00:57:47 ◼   ► deserves what.

00:57:49 ◼   ► And it works with the tools you're probably already using.

00:57:52 ◼   ► Whether you're Revenue Cat, Adapte, Aptic, Stripe, App Hud, or connecting directly to the

00:57:57 ◼   ► App Store or Google Play, Insert Affiliate fits right into your existing setup.

00:58:03 ◼   ► In fact, Insert Affiliate is an official partner of Revenue Cat and was recently

00:58:07 ◼   ► featured on their sub club podcast.

00:58:10 ◼   ► You get complete control over how you reward your creators.

00:58:14 ◼   ► You can offer a percentage of sales or a fixed amount, choose whether commissions

00:58:19 ◼   ► apply to renewals or just the first purchase, and even set different terms for

00:58:23 ◼   ► different creators.

00:58:25 ◼   ► So you can build a program that works for you and your app rather

00:58:29 ◼   ► than trying to fit your app around someone else's rules.

00:58:32 ◼   ► And when it comes to paying everyone, that's taken care of too.

00:58:35 ◼   ► Pay creators through Stripe and over 130 currencies or switch on automatic payouts and

00:58:41 ◼   ► let Insert Affiliate handle payments for you daily.

00:58:45 ◼   ► And if you're still building your creator network, there's built-in marketplace where you can

00:58:49 ◼   ► discover affiliates who are interested in promoting apps like yours and then invite them

00:58:53 ◼   ► directly.

00:58:55 ◼   ► Creators get their own dashboard where they can track their sales and see exactly

00:58:59 ◼   ► what they've earned, which means fewer messages back and forth asking how much they're

00:59:04 ◼   ► owed and more time for you to focus on growing your app.

00:59:08 ◼   ► So if you have an app and want creators driving subscribers to it, go

00:59:13 ◼   ► to insertaffiliate.com.

00:59:15 ◼   ► That's insertaffiliate.com.

00:59:18 ◼   ► The link is in the show notes.

00:59:19 ◼   ► Our thanks to insert affiliates for their support of the show and all of

00:59:23 ◼   ► Relay.

00:59:26 ◼   ► Have you ever wanted to reach out and touch your MacBook Pro?

00:59:29 ◼   ► Yes.

00:59:30 ◼   ► I have good news.

00:59:32 ◼   ► Well, I don't have a MacBook.

00:59:35 ◼   ► Pro and th the ro the route to this news is not good, I

00:59:39 ◼   ► think.

00:59:40 ◼   ► But sure.

00:59:41 ◼   ► Wha wait uh okay.

00:59:42 ◼   ► Well let me le uh uh let me what do you mean?

00:59:46 ◼   ► I mean a MacBook Pro is a lot of money.

00:59:48 ◼   ► They're very expensive.

00:59:49 ◼   ► Compared to a MacBook Air.

00:59:51 ◼   ► It's less of an increase than I thought it would be.

00:59:54 ◼   ► So they start at $2,900 for the 14-inch

00:59:58 ◼   ► and $3,400 for the 16-inch.

01:00:02 ◼   ► That's basically a four hundred dollar increase over the base.

01:00:04 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:00:05 ◼   ► I mean, that's a lot of money, but I really thought it'd be more.

01:00:08 ◼   ► I thought the fourteen inch was gonna be a three thousand dollar machine.

01:00:11 ◼   ► But um I mean you're not far though.

01:00:14 ◼   ► I'm not f no, no, I'm not far.

01:00:15 ◼   ► And w again, like any of these products, the second you touch the configurator,

01:00:18 ◼   ► like, goodbye.

01:00:20 ◼   ► You're going to the stratosphere.

01:00:22 ◼   ► Because this is the problem, right?

01:00:23 ◼   ► Is like,

01:00:25 ◼   ► do you want twenty four gigabytes of RAM in your three thousand dollar computer?

01:00:29 ◼   ► Nope.

01:00:30 ◼   ► No, you want more, right?

01:00:32 ◼   ► Because you're spending three thousand dollars on a computer, so you need it to

01:00:36 ◼   ► last.

01:00:36 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:00:37 ◼   ► And I think RAM is more important than ever.

01:00:40 ◼   ► Or is more expensive than ever.

01:00:42 ◼   ► Both both.

01:00:43 ◼   ► It's this is yeah.

01:00:45 ◼   ► So I mean these things go up.

01:00:46 ◼   ► They go up in price very, very quickly.

01:00:49 ◼   ► Whoa.

01:00:49 ◼   ► But we yes, we are talking about the brand new MacBook Pro with pro

01:00:54 ◼   ► led XDR display.

01:00:56 ◼   ► That's the first time I've got to say that out loud.

01:00:59 ◼   ► Is it proled?

01:01:01 ◼   ► Yes.

01:01:02 ◼   ► I can't be the only person that said that right.

01:01:04 ◼   ► There was a debate in a slack we're in.

01:01:06 ◼   ► It was like, is it Pro OLED?

01:01:08 ◼   ► Is it pro LED?

01:01:10 ◼   ► It's pro LED.

01:01:12 ◼   ► I look.

01:01:14 ◼   ► I know they're like marketing professionals at Apple,

01:01:18 ◼   ► but they are too high on their own supply when it comes to display

01:01:21 ◼   ► names.

01:01:22 ◼   ► This usually I'm fine with it, right?

01:01:24 ◼   ► Like the display names there they are bonkers, but I'm fine with it.

01:01:28 ◼   ► I don't like a pun.

01:01:31 ◼   ► In the in the in the product name.

01:01:33 ◼   ► In the most expensive laptop.

01:01:35 ◼   ► It got a joke in the name.

01:01:37 ◼   ► Especially because they are calling it the ProLED display MacBook Pro.

01:01:42 ◼   ► Like it's it's not like that they are just Yeah, and and Jambohar in

01:01:46 ◼   ► Discord makes a really good point.

01:01:47 ◼   ► Like, why is it in all caps?

01:01:49 ◼   ► Like that makes it so much worse.

01:01:51 ◼   ► MacBook Pro with ProLED XDR display.

01:01:54 ◼   ► It's like, but but why isn't the R and the O in ProLED lowercase?

01:01:59 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:02:00 ◼   ► I don't know, man.

01:02:01 ◼   ► Or even the R, I mean that's why actually because OLED is all uppercase.

01:02:05 ◼   ► That's what they've done it.

01:02:05 ◼   ► I realize it now only the R would be lowercase and that would be

01:02:08 ◼   ► weird.

01:02:09 ◼   ► Um But look,

01:02:12 ◼   ► I'm I'm going to get used to it very quickly, but I think it

01:02:15 ◼   ► is wild that they called it the ProLed XDR.

01:02:19 ◼   ► Like the the the name for this thing is the ProLed XDR display.

01:02:22 ◼   ► I mean they did do this before, right?

01:02:24 ◼   ► It was MacBook Pro with Retina display and but people really like retina display.

01:02:31 ◼   ► I don't know if people like ProLED XDR display or liquid liquid display.

01:02:36 ◼   ► The current MacBook Pro is MacBook okay, here's another problem.

01:02:40 ◼   ► The new one, I'm gonna read the whole name.

01:02:42 ◼   ► MacBook Pro with Pro LED XDR display.

01:02:46 ◼   ► The current MacBook Pro, the one I'm speaking to you on, MacBook Pro parentheses,

01:02:52 ◼   ► liquid retina XDR.

01:02:54 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:02:55 ◼   ► Pick a lane.

01:02:56 ◼   ► That's what I'm Well what I wanna know is what is different.

01:03:01 ◼   ► I mean I'm gonna see if I can try and find this out by

01:03:03 ◼   ► looking at tech specs between this display and the iPad Pro display.

01:03:11 ◼   ► Uh yeah.

01:03:12 ◼   ► I'm looking at it now.

01:03:13 ◼   ► There are differences because

01:03:16 ◼   ► stuff, right?

01:03:17 ◼   ► Or different things.

01:03:17 ◼   ► Well, I mean I don't know about everything, but like the the iPad Pro

01:03:21 ◼   ► does a thousand nits peak brightness and this is two thousand nits peak brightness,

01:03:25 ◼   ► for example.

01:03:26 ◼   ► So maybe there are a cause they're both tandem OLED, right?

01:03:29 ◼   ► And that's why I was I was wondering.

01:03:31 ◼   ► Yeah, okay.

01:03:31 ◼   ► The contrast ratio on the iPad Pro is two million to one and it

01:03:35 ◼   ► is ten million to one on the on the back So okay, they're both

01:03:39 ◼   ► tandem OLED, but they are significantly better.

01:03:42 ◼   ► And I will say

01:03:44 ◼   ► now I'm more interested because I ha the iPad Pro display is the best

01:03:49 ◼   ► display.

01:03:50 ◼   ► I have used on any computer.

01:03:53 ◼   ► It is astounding.

01:03:56 ◼   ► This one's a lot better, it looks like, just on the numbers.

01:03:59 ◼   ► And I will say, like, people that I know that have seen it are

01:04:02 ◼   ► like, it's the real deal, this display like ignore the touch if you want

01:04:05 ◼   ► to.

01:04:05 ◼   ► Like the display is like good real good.

01:04:11 ◼   ► Yeah, it's uh it I think it's gonna be incredible.

01:04:13 ◼   ► And like the pro display XDR like that you have.

01:04:17 ◼   ► All the reference modes are really unlock workflows for people with like very specialized

01:04:24 ◼   ► needs.

01:04:25 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:04:25 ◼   ► Like for you and me, it looks sick, but if you are doing very

01:04:29 ◼   ► specific things in imagery or in the medical field like you can set the

01:04:34 ◼   ► display exactly how you need it.

01:04:36 ◼   ► Um, and there are people for which that that's a huge deal.

01:04:40 ◼   ► Yep.

01:04:40 ◼   ► For the rest of us, it's a very, very, very nice looking display that

01:04:46 ◼   ► that adds touch.

01:04:47 ◼   ► Um, but you do pay for it.

01:04:48 ◼   ► I actually just built um actually I didn't even build, let me actually make

01:04:52 ◼   ► it exactly like mine.

01:04:54 ◼   ► Um to rebuild my MacBook Pro, I have the M4 Max MacBook Pro.

01:05:01 ◼   ► Uh it is almost eight thousand dollars.

01:05:04 ◼   ► I plug in my serial number for trade in and I would still owe

01:05:08 ◼   ► Apple over four thousand dollars for a new fourteen inch MacBook Pro.

01:05:12 ◼   ► Stephen, a four thousand dollar trade in is incredible.

01:05:14 ◼   ► Yeah they gave me they gave me uh thirty five hundred dollars for my

01:05:19 ◼   ► trade in.

01:05:20 ◼   ► That is an amazing price in that I could get an iPad uh a

01:05:24 ◼   ► MacBook Air and they would have to pay me, probably.

01:05:26 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:05:27 ◼   ► Um but the yeah, so the display it does seem incredible.

01:05:31 ◼   ► And you're right, the name will fade, just like the MacBook Pro with running

01:05:34 ◼   ► a display.

01:05:35 ◼   ► I obviously have not listened to ATP.

01:05:37 ◼   ► I think it just I think it just recorded last night, but I'm terrified

01:05:40 ◼   ► of whatever stupid name Casey gave it.

01:05:42 ◼   ► Like you know can it can he can he give a stupider one?

01:05:47 ◼   ► It's like what's he gonna do?

01:05:48 ◼   ► Like maybe Casey can improve it.

01:05:52 ◼   ► Maybe.

01:05:52 ◼   ► But you know, he was into the like the retina what did he call

01:05:55 ◼   ► it?

01:05:56 ◼   ► Um he had some name for the like the Retina MacBook Pro, I forget.

01:06:00 ◼   ► Anyways, we'll I love Casey, I'm sorry.

01:06:03 ◼   ► Um

01:06:04 ◼   ► Well, as I say, he's my most infuriating friend.

01:06:07 ◼   ► Like he understands.

01:06:08 ◼   ► I'm going to his house.

01:06:10 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:06:11 ◼   ► I look forward to the content.

01:06:12 ◼   ► We had a FaceTime call where he was under his house showing me things

01:06:15 ◼   ► that I that I'm gonna fix for him.

01:06:16 ◼   ► You're getting under his house?

01:06:18 ◼   ► Yeah, man.

01:06:19 ◼   ► Are you gonna ruin his house?

01:06:21 ◼   ► No.

01:06:22 ◼   ► Are you sure you're gonna not gonna ruin his house?

01:06:24 ◼   ► Um dude, I'm professional.

01:06:27 ◼   ► How confident do you feel?

01:06:28 ◼   ► I'm very confident that we can pull this cable and not destroy a home.

01:06:32 ◼   ► Okay.

01:06:33 ◼   ► I do have to drill through his garage wall, but it'll be fine.

01:06:37 ◼   ► Uh so you've got the the niceties.

01:06:40 ◼   ► One thing I'm excited to see, and like some of the videos sort of

01:06:43 ◼   ► show it, but I really want to see what reviewers think is about the

01:06:46 ◼   ► dynamic island.

01:06:48 ◼   ► So the notch is gone.

01:06:51 ◼   ► It's very funny to me.

01:06:52 ◼   ► I mean Golden Gate like totally broke the macOS menu bar and any menu

01:06:57 ◼   ► bar apps you may use are still probably pretty janky.

01:07:00 ◼   ► But they finally in Golden Gate did something for the system to understand there's

01:07:04 ◼   ► a notch and not plow your menu bar items into it.

01:07:07 ◼   ► And then like a month later there's a new MacBook Pro without a notch.

01:07:10 ◼   ► It's like, well we fixed it.

01:07:12 ◼   ► The new one doesn't need the fix.

01:07:13 ◼   ► Um no but that's great though.

01:07:15 ◼   ► I actually think it's very encouraging that they still fixed it even though they're

01:07:19 ◼   ► starting to bring up computers.

01:07:20 ◼   ► And look, the notch is gonna I mean, the regular MacBook Pro is sticking

01:07:23 ◼   ► around.

01:07:24 ◼   ► This is gonna take ages to get to the MacBook Air.

01:07:26 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:07:27 ◼   ► If it ever does.

01:07:28 ◼   ► I mean I think By the way, I I did price mine out.

01:07:30 ◼   ► Uh um, it would cost me four thousand to get what I want.

01:07:33 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:07:33 ◼   ► Like what I would want from a from this computer, which is just the

01:07:37 ◼   ► pro chip.

01:07:38 ◼   ► I would want to bump up from twenty four to forty eight gigs of

01:07:41 ◼   ► RAM.

01:07:42 ◼   ► Although I would like thirty six, so I don't need forty eight, but should

01:07:45 ◼   ► I I got sixty four right now.

01:07:47 ◼   ► And then I would want a two terabyte SSD.

01:07:50 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:07:50 ◼   ► And that brings me to four grand.

01:07:53 ◼   ► Which is like I believe that in the current market this computer is worth

01:07:57 ◼   ► that money, but like I don't I don't for me, I just don't think

01:08:01 ◼   ► I really want to try one of these.

01:08:02 ◼   ► Like I wanna see what the the weight is like.

01:08:04 ◼   ► I wanna see what the thickness is like, and I am I am really,

01:08:09 ◼   ► really keen on a touch screen map pro.

01:08:11 ◼   ► Like I'm very, very keen on that.

01:08:13 ◼   ► But But I don't think that I will love the overall like day to

01:08:19 ◼   ► day experience more than a MacBook Air, which is so thin and so light

01:08:23 ◼   ► and it just goes in my bag.

01:08:24 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:08:24 ◼   ► Like I I would notice this in my bag way, way, way, way more.

01:08:28 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:08:28 ◼   ► I think.

01:08:29 ◼   ► And and the MacBook Air will get some of this.

01:08:31 ◼   ► Like I think the MacBook Air will get a dynamic island.

01:08:34 ◼   ► I think it'll get a touch screen.

01:08:35 ◼   ► It may not be this dual panel OLED.

01:08:39 ◼   ► Uh I I would ex I would bet that it gets a touch screen

01:08:42 ◼   ► before it gets OLED.

01:08:44 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:08:44 ◼   ► But it's gonna be a long time though.

01:08:46 ◼   ► It's gonna be years, I think, until they roll out touch on other computers.

01:08:51 ◼   ► Yeah, we'll get to that because I think you're right.

01:08:54 ◼   ► Um It seems one thing that a lot of people I think were were

01:08:58 ◼   ► concerned about talking about before this is what are they gonna do with macOS?

01:09:02 ◼   ► Rather famously, maybe infamously, when Microsoft first tried to ad well they they tried

01:09:09 ◼   ► for years to like it have pinned versions of Windows, even back to like

01:09:13 ◼   ► Windows three point one.

01:09:14 ◼   ► Um and then they started doing some touch stuff very famously, like Windows eight

01:09:20 ◼   ► with the Metro UI that blew up Windows and had to redo it in

01:09:24 ◼   ► 8.1.

01:09:25 ◼   ► And Windows 10 and 11, even without a touch display, you know, the targets

01:09:30 ◼   ► are bigger.

01:09:31 ◼   ► It's a little spaced out.

01:09:32 ◼   ► I think it looks I think Windows 11 in particular has some weird UI

01:09:35 ◼   ► stuff on the desktop

01:09:37 ◼   ► But here for this machine, it doesn't seem like Apple's reinvente macOS.

01:09:44 ◼   ► Um if you touch a menu, like open a menu or a context menu

01:09:48 ◼   ► the spacing is a little bit bigger.

01:09:50 ◼   ► And for the spot, for the stoplight controls, the window controls, it's actually just

01:09:56 ◼   ► like the iPad.

01:09:57 ◼   ► So you tap into the area, they get bigger, and then you tap again

01:10:01 ◼   ► for red, yellow, green, you know, close, minimize, maximize.

01:10:05 ◼   ► Um

01:10:07 ◼   ► but I think I think what Apple is saying here and the way they

01:10:12 ◼   ► demoed it is this an additive thing to mac OS?

01:10:17 ◼   ► And if you're using these professional applications like Logic or Final Cut or Procreate

01:10:23 ◼   ► or whatever, you can have an enhanced user experience but is not the default

01:10:30 ◼   ► user experience.

01:10:32 ◼   ► And I think that is exactly the right way to go when it comes

01:10:36 ◼   ► to the Mac for a bunch of reasons, right?

01:10:38 ◼   ► The Mac has been an indirect input system that was mentioned in the wired

01:10:43 ◼   ► uh article that Stephen Levy wrote.

01:10:46 ◼   ► It is a mouse and keyboard driven system.

01:10:49 ◼   ► And that is not changing.

01:10:50 ◼   ► This is on top of it.

01:10:52 ◼   ► And for me, like in addition to the obscene amount of money it would

01:10:55 ◼   ► take, I I I was worried going into this that I would think as

01:10:59 ◼   ► someone who loves the Mac and follows it and talks about it, that I

01:11:03 ◼   ► would see this and be like, Oh, if I don't get one, then I'm

01:11:07 ◼   ► like missing the future of the Mac.

01:11:09 ◼   ► And today I don't feel that way at all.

01:11:11 ◼   ► Like I I think maybe because of my setup, because most of the time

01:11:15 ◼   ► I'm looking at a Pro Display XDR with my MacBook Pro to the side.

01:11:19 ◼   ► It's not my primary interface.

01:11:21 ◼   ► And it's additive, and like it would be really cool to have it in

01:11:24 ◼   ► the simulator and have it in logic, but they're not redefining what mac OS

01:11:29 ◼   ► is or even really how mac OS looks and works with this.

01:11:33 ◼   ► And I think I think they have to do that because also for the

01:11:38 ◼   ► foreseeable future, 99.9% of Macs aren't gonna have touch screens, right?

01:11:42 ◼   ► We talked about how long this is gonna take to roll down.

01:11:45 ◼   ► And you have desktop users, right?

01:11:47 ◼   ► Even laptop users like me and like you

01:11:51 ◼   ► use them very very often or all the time as desktop Macs.

01:11:55 ◼   ► And so they can't, they shouldn't blow up the Mac OS interface figuratively and

01:12:02 ◼   ► literally for touch.

01:12:04 ◼   ► And so I'm encouraged by what I've seen so far that they really were

01:12:08 ◼   ► thoughtful about this in terms of what are the interactions like, what is it

01:12:13 ◼   ► gonna be good for?

01:12:14 ◼   ► And uh Federico wrote this, I mean just like incredible piece.

01:12:19 ◼   ► I guess on his duo with a kickstand at the at the Apple event.

01:12:24 ◼   ► I don't think he took another computer with him.

01:12:25 ◼   ► It's incredible.

01:12:26 ◼   ► Uh MacBook Pro with Touch, a Mac for the iPad generation.

01:12:30 ◼   ► And I think he absolutely nails it that for the Mac to be attractive

01:12:37 ◼   ► to

01:12:39 ◼   ► iPhone and iPad people who are younger, who maybe haven't used a Mac or

01:12:43 ◼   ► have used it maybe just in school or something they're gonna want this and

01:12:49 ◼   ► to have it as an option.

01:12:51 ◼   ► Look, you can buy this machine.

01:12:52 ◼   ► Uh Marquez said this in his review.

01:12:54 ◼   ► He's gonna buy this computer potentially never touch the screen.

01:12:56 ◼   ► And like that's totally fine because it's secondary.

01:12:59 ◼   ► But for people who want it, the Mac hasn't had it.

01:13:02 ◼   ► And adding it seems to have not cost the MacBook Pro or Mac OS

01:13:07 ◼   ► all that much in terms of uh experience.

01:13:11 ◼   ► Yep.

01:13:13 ◼   ► Can we talk about the light up logo though?

01:13:15 ◼   ► Dude.

01:13:16 ◼   ► I opened my article with it.

01:13:19 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:13:20 ◼   ► Uh uh I wrote the most important thing about this laptop is that the

01:13:23 ◼   ► Apple logo lights up on the lid.

01:13:25 ◼   ► I will never forgive Johnny Ive and Tim Cook for taking that away ten

01:13:28 ◼   ► years ago.

01:13:29 ◼   ► I understood it on the twelve inch MacBook in twenty fifteen, but taking it

01:13:33 ◼   ► off the MacBook Pro was in poor taste.

01:13:35 ◼   ► No, it's good.

01:13:36 ◼   ► You take it away so you can bring it back again.

01:13:39 ◼   ► No, no it is this happened on like the ten year and one day

01:13:43 ◼   ► anniversary of those really bad MacBook Pros coming out.

01:13:46 ◼   ► Um I read about that over the weekend.

01:13:48 ◼   ► Apple knows what they're doing here.

01:13:50 ◼   ► Like it it's Turnus' profile picture on X gross and it is like in

01:13:54 ◼   ► the wired article, like big.

01:13:56 ◼   ► Um, it's also my wallpaper on my laptop now for Okay, makes sense.

01:14:00 ◼   ► Private reasons.

01:14:01 ◼   ► Um like d have you seen the Instagram reel of him announcing the thing?

01:14:06 ◼   ► 'Cause they had a little keynote presentation.

01:14:08 ◼   ► His swagger, like remember when Phil Schiller uh came out with the Mac with

01:14:14 ◼   ► the Mac Pro and he said, you know, can't innovate anymore, my like same

01:14:19 ◼   ► energy here.

01:14:21 ◼   ► Well, I just it's for me, it's just it is an example.

01:14:24 ◼   ► Uh yeah, another example of the fact that Turnus really knows what he's doing

01:14:29 ◼   ► and he knows

01:14:31 ◼   ► who he's making these computers for, I think.

01:14:34 ◼   ► And I think he is aware of people like us and what we like

01:14:40 ◼   ► and what we would be excited by.

01:14:43 ◼   ► And I think it is very clever that in a the first Mac where

01:14:48 ◼   ► they are changing something pretty significant about the Mac, they're also like, Yeah, but

01:14:53 ◼   ► you love the nostalgia though.

01:14:55 ◼   ► Come on.

01:14:56 ◼   ► Yeah, it's I think it's very clever hardware design.

01:14:59 ◼   ► It's a very new machine right?

01:15:02 ◼   ► Yep.

01:15:03 ◼   ► Uh but it has this this throwback.

01:15:05 ◼   ► And what's interesting, I I'm not I mean we'll see how it is in

01:15:08 ◼   ► the real world, but it appears like black when it's off, which is cool.

01:15:12 ◼   ► It may so and Marquez's video, he was talking about this that it looks

01:15:17 ◼   ► metallic when it's off.

01:15:18 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:15:19 ◼   ► And when it's on, it's lit up.

01:15:20 ◼   ► And he's like Well, but the thing is with this whole thing is this

01:15:23 ◼   ► didn't come for free.

01:15:25 ◼   ► Like the the it used to come for free because it was the backlight

01:15:28 ◼   ► of the L C of the L C D display.

01:15:30 ◼   ► LED display.

01:15:31 ◼   ► Whatever one, whichever one of those is the correct phrase.

01:15:34 ◼   ► I think it's E D, right?

01:15:35 ◼   ► Yes.

01:15:35 ◼   ► Yes.

01:15:36 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:15:37 ◼   ► The backlight did it.

01:15:38 ◼   ► Well, there isn't a backlight display.

01:15:41 ◼   ► So they had to engineer a light into this logo.

01:15:45 ◼   ► So it's like this this was a specific effort.

01:15:48 ◼   ► This wasn't like a oh we can do this again because it's easy.

01:15:52 ◼   ► They were like, no, we are bringing back the LED light up logo and

01:15:58 ◼   ► it's like, ah yeah, I I get you.

01:16:00 ◼   ► Like this is good.

01:16:01 ◼   ► This is just good stuff.

01:16:02 ◼   ► It's not a side effect of something.

01:16:04 ◼   ► It is it was the it was part of the plan.

01:16:08 ◼   ► It is a purposeful decision.

01:16:10 ◼   ► And I I just

01:16:13 ◼   ► let's have an aside about John Tannis real quick.

01:16:16 ◼   ► Okay.

01:16:19 ◼   ► This is good.

01:16:20 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:16:21 ◼   ► Like all of this is good.

01:16:23 ◼   ► And

01:16:25 ◼   ► These past three months, two months have been unrelenting, right?

01:16:32 ◼   ► This is what he wants the company to be.

01:16:35 ◼   ► This is his Apple.

01:16:36 ◼   ► Like I and and you know, people always try and couch it to be

01:16:40 ◼   ► like, Well, he's only just been the CEO and like did it but they

01:16:43 ◼   ► knew this was coming.

01:16:44 ◼   ► He was involved in all these, like And these are all his products, right?

01:16:48 ◼   ► Like these are all his products because he would have been el when he

01:16:53 ◼   ► got kind of got elevated

01:16:55 ◼   ► would be the time that a lot of this stuff would have been in

01:16:58 ◼   ► consideration.

01:16:59 ◼   ► And Apple chose now to be the time to make him the CEO because

01:17:05 ◼   ► of what was about to happen.

01:17:07 ◼   ► Like they lined all of this up.

01:17:09 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:17:09 ◼   ► So the only thing that I am able to draw from this right now

01:17:12 ◼   ► is this is what they want the company to look like.

01:17:16 ◼   ► Like this is how he wants his Apple to be.

01:17:20 ◼   ► And there has been reporting from Mark Gurman to further suggest this, right?

01:17:25 ◼   ► That he wants to like eliminate a lot of red tape in the company,

01:17:30 ◼   ► make them move quicker, make them the more agile, like really push.

01:17:34 ◼   ► And I I see things like this computer.

01:17:38 ◼   ► I see things like the iPhone Duo.

01:17:40 ◼   ► And then all these little decisions that they're making in between.

01:17:43 ◼   ► It's like the home view kind of looks like the iMac G4 enough, right?

01:17:47 ◼   ► If you squint, it's like, oh that's interesting.

01:17:50 ◼   ► They're bringing back the the uh the illuminated uh Apple logo on the laptop.

01:17:55 ◼   ► That's interesting.

01:17:56 ◼   ► They're using the six color logo in the invite in the last thing.

01:18:00 ◼   ► Like all of these little bits, it's like

01:18:04 ◼   ► this is all I can't see in this anything other than

01:18:09 ◼   ► he is one of us and he now runs the company.

01:18:14 ◼   ► Like ment like from a mentality perspective, Turnus is like an all god Apple

01:18:19 ◼   ► diehard.

01:18:20 ◼   ► And he now runs the business.

01:18:23 ◼   ► And I think that

01:18:25 ◼   ► he is doing a lot of the things that you or I would want

01:18:29 ◼   ► to do if we were put in this position.

01:18:32 ◼   ► Yep.

01:18:33 ◼   ► And that is fascinating to me and incredibly exciting.

01:18:38 ◼   ► Like and and I can't help but look at these decisions and be like

01:18:43 ◼   ► he is telegraphing his company to the to all of us.

01:18:47 ◼   ► Yes.

01:18:47 ◼   ► This is what they do.

01:18:48 ◼   ► And it's like it's a please.

01:18:50 ◼   ► It's a younger, faster feeling thing.

01:18:53 ◼   ► Yes.

01:18:53 ◼   ► And and of course, like the next three months are not gonna have the

01:18:58 ◼   ► product cycle the the past three months have had.

01:19:01 ◼   ► I mean you'd hope so.

01:19:02 ◼   ► I mean geez, you gotta stop.

01:19:03 ◼   ► You gotta stop point.

01:19:04 ◼   ► They wanted to come out with a bang and they surely have, right?

01:19:07 ◼   ► And what's funny is the home view wasn't supposed to be part of that

01:19:10 ◼   ► bang because it seems like they were built for a long time.

01:19:13 ◼   ► Um and then the software finally came around.

01:19:16 ◼   ► It's I think it's I think that's like a bonus that Turnus got to

01:19:19 ◼   ► to you know be involved with that.

01:19:21 ◼   ► But iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro, which is a great I mean, the iPhone

01:19:26 ◼   ► 18 Pro is great.

01:19:27 ◼   ► It just lives in the shadow of the duo.

01:19:29 ◼   ► You've got this.

01:19:31 ◼   ► Um, it is a lot of stuff back to back to back but they

01:19:35 ◼   ► want to make a statement with him.

01:19:37 ◼   ► And because he has worked on those products, it is a bigger statement than

01:19:41 ◼   ► w than it would have been if someone else had been promoted to CEO.

01:19:46 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:19:46 ◼   ► Right.

01:19:46 ◼   ► Say that that Sabi Khan was CEO instead of John Turnus.

01:19:50 ◼   ► We wouldn't have this feeling of okay, someone who really gets the products is

01:19:55 ◼   ► in charge now.

01:19:56 ◼   ► He's comfortable with them.

01:19:57 ◼   ► You can see it.

01:19:58 ◼   ► He totally is.

01:19:59 ◼   ► That that video of him doing like the weird music wall thing, he's the

01:20:02 ◼   ► A twenty pro ring from the iPad and the other one.

01:20:04 ◼   ► I don't know why he's

01:20:06 ◼   ► wearing it.

01:20:07 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:20:07 ◼   ► You know?

01:20:08 ◼   ► It's like why is he wearing that ring?

01:20:09 ◼   ► I don't understand.

01:20:10 ◼   ► I can only imagine he decided that 'cause I don't think anyone would put

01:20:14 ◼   ► it on him.

01:20:14 ◼   ► No.

01:20:15 ◼   ► Like, you've got to wear that ring.

01:20:16 ◼   ► I'm not wearing that ring.

01:20:17 ◼   ► No, he's like, I want give me that thing.

01:20:18 ◼   ► I wanna wear.

01:20:19 ◼   ► It was in the commercial game.

01:20:20 ◼   ► I think he's cool and very funny in real life.

01:20:22 ◼   ► Uh and that seems to be the case from people who have met him,

01:20:24 ◼   ► but it is uh it is a sign that that he is approaching these

01:20:29 ◼   ► things differently.

01:20:31 ◼   ► And I I had this thought this morning, so it's not like fully formed,

01:20:35 ◼   ► but he he clearly is not Steve Jobs 2.0.

01:20:38 ◼   ► He is much more

01:20:41 ◼   ► a man of the people,

01:20:43 ◼   ► much more uh I don't know if playful is the right word, but like

01:20:48 ◼   ► his presentation style does not indicate that he's got it all worked out and

01:20:52 ◼   ► you just need to do whatever he says which is what Jobs' whole thing

01:20:55 ◼   ► was, right?

01:20:55 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:20:56 ◼   ► Like he's not coming in and being like, You don't even know what to

01:21:00 ◼   ► think right now and I'm gonna tell ya.

01:21:02 ◼   ► You know, like that was Jobs' whole kind of like vibe, right?

01:21:05 ◼   ► Mm-hmm and his isn't you're right it's not like that.

01:21:08 ◼   ► It's like we think really hard about this stuff and we really love it

01:21:11 ◼   ► and we think you're gonna love it too.

01:21:12 ◼   ► Like it there's a bit more of a like

01:21:15 ◼   ► he he feels like a guy you wanna have a beer with, right?

01:21:19 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:21:20 ◼   ► Jobs wasn't that.

01:21:21 ◼   ► Jobs is a guy who would throw a beer at you.

01:21:25 ◼   ► Right.

01:21:25 ◼   ► And you would know it's coming.

01:21:27 ◼   ► Like at any moment.

01:21:28 ◼   ► And like but Turnus doesn't have that.

01:21:31 ◼   ► Turnus has a different vibe.

01:21:33 ◼   ► That's right.

01:21:33 ◼   ► And it's so refreshing and I'm so pleased.

01:21:36 ◼   ► I'm just so happy about it.

01:21:39 ◼   ► Right?

01:21:39 ◼   ► Like I just the it makes me happy.

01:21:41 ◼   ► Like all of the stuff that that is happening right now around them.

01:21:46 ◼   ► Like I it is just it just feels

01:21:49 ◼   ► really good.

01:21:50 ◼   ► And I'm I'm very excited and encouraged.

01:21:54 ◼   ► And look, we're talking about like change, right?

01:21:56 ◼   ► He is the first CEO that's that's that is under the split iPhone era.

01:22:00 ◼   ► Like what happens in the spring?

01:22:02 ◼   ► What does that look like?

01:22:04 ◼   ► They are clearly trying a lot of new stuff, right?

01:22:07 ◼   ► Like they are doing the event that Federico and Jason were at, it was

01:22:12 ◼   ► an influencer event.

01:22:14 ◼   ► It was like and but this time they invited media to it as well.

01:22:18 ◼   ► But they have moved into a experiential thing.

01:22:24 ◼   ► They're doing this more and more, right?

01:22:25 ◼   ► And they're calling them experiences.

01:22:27 ◼   ► And they're like, they're stretching that out.

01:22:29 ◼   ► That's new.

01:22:30 ◼   ► Wired has now been pre-briefed twice.

01:22:34 ◼   ► Apple and The Verge got pre-briefs on the home view.

01:22:37 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:22:38 ◼   ► They don't do that, but they're doing it.

01:22:40 ◼   ► And Wired even even met one of the embargoes out of the two.

01:22:45 ◼   ► Although when

01:22:47 ◼   ► were they early this time too?

01:22:48 ◼   ► No, no, no.

01:22:49 ◼   ► So l with the home view, they were early and they published the whole

01:22:51 ◼   ► article, right?

01:22:52 ◼   ► And took it down.

01:22:53 ◼   ► When Levy posted at embargo time it four oh four'd for like twenty minutes.

01:22:58 ◼   ► Oh obviously they were so terrified about it about it being wrong again, they

01:23:03 ◼   ► didn't right.

01:23:04 ◼   ► So or some so like this article was like four oh fouring for Ages.

01:23:08 ◼   ► That's brilliant.

01:23:09 ◼   ► But yeah, they didn't break embargo this time, which is really great work to

01:23:12 ◼   ► everybody at Wired.

01:23:13 ◼   ► Wired you're a you're an incredible organization.

01:23:15 ◼   ► I'm sorry for making fun of you.

01:23:17 ◼   ► Uh but th but that's new though, right?

01:23:20 ◼   ► They're they're pre briefing journalists.

01:23:22 ◼   ► They They they do not do this, but they're doing it.

01:23:25 ◼   ► And it's like I'm excited about all of that.

01:23:28 ◼   ► It's like 'cause, you know, people that we love the products and we like

01:23:30 ◼   ► to watch the company and like to kind of like judge like what are

01:23:33 ◼   ► they doing?

01:23:34 ◼   ► And right now the answer is it's all new.

01:23:37 ◼   ► It's like, oh yeah, give it to me.

01:23:39 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:23:40 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:23:40 ◼   ► And I I think it will continue to evolve.

01:23:42 ◼   ► They are going to experiment with stuff until they find what works for Turnus

01:23:48 ◼   ► and the current crop of Apple PR people, right?

01:23:52 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:23:52 ◼   ► Um I think they've probably landed on it pretty quickly.

01:23:55 ◼   ► Like I this feels like a sustainable, like good thing.

01:23:59 ◼   ► Um, but we'll see.

01:24:01 ◼   ► I will not be surprised if if things continue to to change and evolve.

01:24:07 ◼   ► Um, you know, this was live on stage, right?

01:24:10 ◼   ► The Neo was kind of live on stage.

01:24:13 ◼   ► Like are they working up to something bigger?

01:24:16 ◼   ► I Yeah, they've done a few things now where they're doing these little s

01:24:19 ◼   ► like little presentations right?

01:24:20 ◼   ► And it's like, is are they moving in that direction?

01:24:23 ◼   ► And then also like to kind of build on what you were saying, like

01:24:26 ◼   ► how available do they want to make turn us?

01:24:28 ◼   ► I I think that's the thing they don't know yet, right?

01:24:31 ◼   ► Like how often are we going to hear from him in the media?

01:24:34 ◼   ► Which was a thing that Tim didn't, right?

01:24:38 ◼   ► I think John Turnus has done more interviews, like r like casual interviews in

01:24:44 ◼   ► the last two months and turn us uh then than Cook maybe did in

01:24:47 ◼   ► five years, right?

01:24:48 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:24:49 ◼   ► Where where they're not like I'm doing a piece of Good Morning America.

01:24:52 ◼   ► No, it's like I'm I'm sitting down with someone and having a long form

01:24:55 ◼   ► conversation and you're gonna hear all of it.

01:24:58 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:24:59 ◼   ► It's cool.

01:24:59 ◼   ► Uh and it's it is we've watched this company a long time.

01:25:03 ◼   ► And we really started I was thinking about this too.

01:25:06 ◼   ► We really started this in depth at you know, the very basically the very

01:25:12 ◼   ► beginning of the Tim Cook era right?

01:25:15 ◼   ► Um twenty eleven, twenty twelve.

01:25:17 ◼   ► Um the prompts start in twenty thirteen.

01:25:20 ◼   ► Like it's the we uh we're seeing a new side now, and I I

01:25:25 ◼   ► do think it's good.

01:25:25 ◼   ► And I think I think this very machine sort of um embraces that, which

01:25:31 ◼   ► we can talk about in a second.

01:25:32 ◼   ► But I do want to touch on the specs of this machine before we

01:25:36 ◼   ► move on.

01:25:36 ◼   ► Okay.

01:25:37 ◼   ► It's a new computer, it's not new specs.

01:25:40 ◼   ► So it is still M5 Pro and M5 Max.

01:25:44 ◼   ► There are a couple of minor differences.

01:25:47 ◼   ► I did a big table uh on 512.

01:25:49 ◼   ► You can get 16 terabytes of storage in the new one for a cool

01:25:54 ◼   ► seven thousand dollars.

01:25:56 ◼   ► Um tops out at 128 gigabytes of RAM.

01:26:00 ◼   ► Um, and of course they are a slightly, slightly thinner, but a good bit

01:26:07 ◼   ► lighter, which comes down to uh a lot of it was with the thermal

01:26:12 ◼   ► design, apparently.

01:26:14 ◼   ► I'm very curious to see one of these open to see what they did,

01:26:17 ◼   ► but uh the vent layout is a little bit different.

01:26:19 ◼   ► They've been able to bring the weight down, uh, which is great.

01:26:22 ◼   ► I mean three pounds for a 14-inch MacBook Pro is pretty sweet.

01:26:25 ◼   ► And it seems like they were able to do it without decimating the battery

01:26:29 ◼   ► life.

01:26:30 ◼   ► This comes in the wake of Gurman reporting that the M6, which we we

01:26:35 ◼   ► skipped over it, but the base 14-inch MacBook Pro got the M6 this week

01:26:40 ◼   ► as well.

01:26:40 ◼   ► That's a great machine that I think a lot of people buy.

01:26:43 ◼   ► Uh Gurman has said that the M six Pro and Max are out and

01:26:47 ◼   ► that Apple's racing toward the M seven generation for technical reasons.

01:26:51 ◼   ► Um, I don't know.

01:26:52 ◼   ► I mean this seems to back that up, but we don't know for sure.

01:26:56 ◼   ► Uh uh uh we just don't know.

01:26:57 ◼   ► Um but if you're looking at this, if you have an M5 Pro or

01:27:01 ◼   ► Max MacBook Pro, or like me an M4 Max, like this machine is not

01:27:05 ◼   ► about the raw performance, even though it will be better than my computer.

01:27:10 ◼   ► This is about the other features, right?

01:27:11 ◼   ► This is about Oh, my workflow would really benefit from the display technology.

01:27:16 ◼   ► I really want touch.

01:27:17 ◼   ► I'm working in iOS simulators all day.

01:27:19 ◼   ► I want touch.

01:27:20 ◼   ► Something like that.

01:27:21 ◼   ► Um, this is not gonna blow my machine out of the water by any

01:27:25 ◼   ► means.

01:27:26 ◼   ► Um, and I just find that a little bit interesting.

01:27:28 ◼   ► It it's not super often that we get you know, it's not a redesign,

01:27:32 ◼   ► it's it's a refresh design.

01:27:34 ◼   ► Uh still has the same ports and everything, thankfully.

01:27:37 ◼   ► But it is the same, basically the same inside.

01:27:40 ◼   ► That's just a little unusual.

01:27:41 ◼   ► Yeah, it's weird that they've

01:27:44 ◼   ► they've essentially changed nothing visually or port wise, but they've obviously made changes because

01:27:51 ◼   ► it's the cases are physically different.

01:27:53 ◼   ► Mm-hmm.

01:27:53 ◼   ► Um but so they obviously just really believe in this current design, which is

01:27:57 ◼   ► great, right?

01:27:58 ◼   ► They they I'm pleased that they haven't tried to to to kind of rethink

01:28:02 ◼   ► the MacBook Pro's design for rethinking sake.

01:28:05 ◼   ► Um

01:28:06 ◼   ► that they've kind of stuck with the overall kind of look and feel of

01:28:10 ◼   ► the the machine without like making big changes because it's not needed.

01:28:14 ◼   ► It's it's pretty like perfect laptop right now, sh design wise.

01:28:21 ◼   ► Yeah, and I'm so glad the port stayed.

01:28:23 ◼   ► I was a little afraid, like I was like, I like looked at my

01:28:26 ◼   ► MacBook Pro.

01:28:27 ◼   ► I was like, okay, MacSafe is thin enough, USB C is thin enough.

01:28:30 ◼   ► I was like, does HDMI does it make the cut?

01:28:33 ◼   ► And it did.

01:28:33 ◼   ► Like it's the same I think that's the one you could get rid of.

01:28:36 ◼   ► You get rid of it.

01:28:36 ◼   ► I think so too.

01:28:38 ◼   ► I think people like it for presentations and stuff like that, but but I

01:28:43 ◼   ► think Out of the Out of them all, I would be most okay with

01:28:47 ◼   ► that one.

01:28:47 ◼   ► Um but they were able to hold on to all of them, which is

01:28:51 ◼   ► fantastic.

01:28:51 ◼   ► Again, I think uh, you know, people w were nervous.

01:28:55 ◼   ► I certainly had some of this that Apple was gonna repeat the twenty sixteen

01:28:58 ◼   ► MacBook Pro mistakes.

01:29:00 ◼   ► And they didn't.

01:29:01 ◼   ► Like they just didn't it.

01:29:02 ◼   ► You know, the IO's the same, the battery life still seems really good.

01:29:05 ◼   ► They've added these features.

01:29:06 ◼   ► They haven't MacBook Pro the way they did in 2016.

01:29:11 ◼   ► And so I'm I'm very optimistic about this computer, about about Apple about wha

01:29:17 ◼   ► how they think about the Mac.

01:29:18 ◼   ► Um and I'm excited to see reviews of it.

01:29:21 ◼   ► I'm not buying one, but I'm excited to see what people think of it.

01:29:23 ◼   ► Don't say that.

01:29:24 ◼   ► You shouldn't say it out loud because you can't be trusted.

01:29:27 ◼   ► I can't be trusted.

01:29:28 ◼   ► I mean, I may have like three grand of Apple store credit in a

01:29:31 ◼   ► few days.

01:29:31 ◼   ► Say look, you s I just want everyone to hear how he is like

01:29:35 ◼   ► already starting to I did not want a two terabyte phone.

01:29:38 ◼   ► It happened to me.

01:29:39 ◼   ► Yeah, but now now you're like, Well now I mean I'm kinda I did

01:29:43 ◼   ► it already.

01:29:43 ◼   ► That's gotta go.

01:29:44 ◼   ► I was gotta go back to my credit card.

01:29:46 ◼   ► Half of the price is taken up by the MacBook Pro and so then

01:29:50 ◼   ► in like six weeks' time Stephen will just casually drop into conversation.

01:29:54 ◼   ► You know, I was touching my MacBook Pro screen the other day and then

01:29:57 ◼   ► like that's I want everybody to know this is how that's going to go

01:30:01 ◼   ► and we can go we can like use this uh as evidence in the

01:30:04 ◼   ► conversation later on.

01:30:05 ◼   ► Wow.

01:30:07 ◼   ► This episode of Connected is brought to you by Mercury Weather.

01:30:11 ◼   ► Mercury Weather is a thoughtfully designed weather app that shows all the essential weather

01:30:16 ◼   ► details at a glance.

01:30:17 ◼   ► It has a gorgeous, colorful interface that dynamically adapts to the conditions.

01:30:21 ◼   ► So if it's a sunny day, like it is today for me, you get

01:30:24 ◼   ► a nice warm orange palette.

01:30:25 ◼   ► Or if it's a cold day and cloudy, things are going to have these

01:30:28 ◼   ► icy tones.

01:30:29 ◼   ► It's really cool.

01:30:30 ◼   ► Mercury uses a glanceable chart layout to present hourly and daily forecasts in a

01:30:35 ◼   ► way that feels intuitive right away.

01:30:37 ◼   ► And if you travel a lot, Mercury Weather's forecast feature is really cool.

01:30:42 ◼   ► It automatically sets up the weather and shows it to you at your destination,

01:30:47 ◼   ► right in your forecast timeline.

01:30:48 ◼   ► So if you're flying across the country and you don't know to expect when

01:30:51 ◼   ► you land, it can pull all that together for you.

01:30:54 ◼   ► And with a recent update, you can now set exact start and end times

01:30:58 ◼   ► for your trip.

01:30:59 ◼   ► So you always see the weather for where you will be, not just where

01:31:03 ◼   ► you are.

01:31:04 ◼   ► And of course, Mercury Weather is ready for the iPhone Duo.

01:31:07 ◼   ► It's been thoughtfully adapted to the new device, bringing the same care and attention

01:31:12 ◼   ► to detail to an exciting new way to check the weather.

01:31:16 ◼   ► And here's a really useful feature: hourly history.

01:31:19 ◼   ► The forecast tells you what's coming, but sometimes it's just useful to know what

01:31:23 ◼   ► happened earlier.

01:31:25 ◼   ► With hourly history, you can scroll back through the previous 24 hours and see

01:31:29 ◼   ► how warm it was yesterday, or maybe did it rain overnight?

01:31:32 ◼   ► Do I need to get out and water the garden?

01:31:35 ◼   ► Mercury Weather's UI really is a delight.

01:31:38 ◼   ► I love that the colors and the feel of the app change based on

01:31:41 ◼   ► the weather.

01:31:41 ◼   ► I think it's really a nice it's a nice detail.

01:31:44 ◼   ► And when the weather gets serious, you want to be ready.

01:31:48 ◼   ► So Mercury offers fire maps and tracks storms and looks at hurricanes.

01:31:53 ◼   ► It has forecast paths, cones, and intensity information, plus home screen widgets so you

01:31:58 ◼   ► can keep tab on a specific storm or the one closest to you.

01:32:01 ◼   ► It's available in iOS, Watch OS, Mac OS, and Vision OS.

01:32:06 ◼   ► You can download it and use the standard features for free or upgrade to

01:32:10 ◼   ► Mercury Premium to unlock all the features.

01:32:14 ◼   ► So go to MercuryWeather.app slash connected to download Mercury Weather now.

01:32:19 ◼   ► Use that link and they will know you came from us.

01:32:22 ◼   ► That's mercuryweather.app slash connected.

01:32:25 ◼   ► It's also in the show notes.

01:32:27 ◼   ► Try it out and get all the standard features for free.

01:32:30 ◼   ► My thanks to Mercury Weather for their support of the show and all of

01:32:33 ◼   ► Relay.

01:32:36 ◼   ► So we mentioned the wired interview.

01:32:38 ◼   ► The wired interview is focused around kind of the move to a touch screen

01:32:43 ◼   ► MacBook Pro here.

01:32:45 ◼   ► And there's like a few extra little bits to kind of to talk about.

01:32:48 ◼   ► And essentially, right so everyone's talking about the Steve Jobs thing.

01:32:54 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:32:55 ◼   ► Right.

01:32:56 ◼   ► We have the audio of it.

01:32:58 ◼   ► Should we just play it?

01:32:59 ◼   ► I mean, probably everyone's heard it in the last forty eight hours, but we

01:33:02 ◼   ► should just play it anyway for the conversation.

01:33:04 ◼   ► You know, the first thing you think about is this, right?

01:33:08 ◼   ► We thought about this years ago.

01:33:11 ◼   ► We've done tons of user testing on this, and it turns out it doesn't

01:33:17 ◼   ► work.

01:33:18 ◼   ► Touch surfaces don't want to be vertical.

01:33:21 ◼   ► It gives great demo,

01:33:24 ◼   ► but after a short period of time you start to fatigue and after an

01:33:28 ◼   ► extended period of time your arm wants to fall off.

01:33:32 ◼   ► It doesn't work.

01:33:33 ◼   ► It's ergonomically terrible.

01:33:36 ◼   ► Touch surfaces want to be horizontal, hence pads.

01:33:43 ◼   ► For a notebook, that's why we've perfected our multi-touch trackpads over the years.

01:33:49 ◼   ► So Federico had a good kind of aside about this in his article that

01:33:54 ◼   ► you referenced earlier.

01:33:55 ◼   ► And you know, he's just saying and I'm I'll read from Federico.

01:33:58 ◼   ► The famous quote comes from twenty ten, uh, from a time before Apple even

01:34:03 ◼   ► knew that the iPad was going to be a massive success.

01:34:06 ◼   ► That quote predates an entire generation of kids who've grown up using iPads and

01:34:10 ◼   ► are now familiar with multi-touch and probably think that it's odd that MacBooks only

01:34:14 ◼   ► come with a tiny trackpad and no direct manipulation.

01:34:17 ◼   ► That quote belongs to a time when iPhones had only existed for three years.

01:34:21 ◼   ► Sixteen years later, touch screens have penetrated every corner of the technology consumer market,

01:34:26 ◼   ► from games, consoles, and car dashboards to smart fridges and coffee makers.

01:34:30 ◼   ► And then like my kind of feeling on this, like adding on to what

01:34:33 ◼   ► Federico said, is this quote also comes from a man who was just a

01:34:38 ◼   ► master marketer.

01:34:40 ◼   ► Like

01:34:41 ◼   ► We will never know what the other side of this conversation is because Steve

01:34:46 ◼   ► Jobs died, right?

01:34:47 ◼   ► Like he did not live long enough to show us how he would market

01:34:51 ◼   ► a touchscreen Mac.

01:34:52 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:34:53 ◼   ► Because there are many more examples of him saying one thing and changing his

01:34:58 ◼   ► mind than there are things left that he said that then they went into

01:35:02 ◼   ► a different direction on.

01:35:04 ◼   ► And also what we do know is that this time in twenty ten, he

01:35:10 ◼   ► didn't want to put touch on a Mac because he wanted you to buy

01:35:12 ◼   ► an iPad.

01:35:13 ◼   ► Like

01:35:15 ◼   ► it like there was no incentive for them to do it and there was

01:35:18 ◼   ► incentive for them to say it doesn't work.

01:35:21 ◼   ► And maybe they felt it at the time, but there wasn't I I don't

01:35:25 ◼   ► believe that there would have been as much of a push as there is

01:35:28 ◼   ► today for them to to do the engineering work needed uh to get to

01:35:34 ◼   ► where we are now.

01:35:35 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:35:36 ◼   ► Look you either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself

01:35:40 ◼   ► become

01:35:41 ◼   ► an entire podcast and YouTube video.

01:35:44 ◼   ► What?

01:35:45 ◼   ► Yep.

01:35:46 ◼   ► Um I mean

01:35:48 ◼   ► You mentioned it earlier, right?

01:35:50 ◼   ► That it's uh they didn't do a lot, really.

01:35:54 ◼   ► No.

01:35:54 ◼   ► Like they they didn't they didn't go wild with it.

01:35:57 ◼   ► There are some bits where they've taken from iPad, like the the traffic light

01:36:01 ◼   ► controls, right, that they expand when you tap them, which is what iPad OS

01:36:05 ◼   ► does.

01:36:06 ◼   ► Um and then there are some affordances that they've done in certain places.

01:36:12 ◼   ► But really it is just Mac OS.

01:36:14 ◼   ► And it's fascinating to see people like videos from people using them and you

01:36:20 ◼   ► s like Federico was was like dragging and dropping files and it just looks

01:36:25 ◼   ► so weird.

01:36:26 ◼   ► It is strange.

01:36:28 ◼   ► I think it shows the amount of effort that Apple would have put in

01:36:31 ◼   ► that they didn't like change the shape that like the the you know I

01:36:35 ◼   ► can column view in the finder, right?

01:36:37 ◼   ► That is the touch targets are tiny.

01:36:40 ◼   ► And so they would have had to have done a lot of work in

01:36:42 ◼   ► that like predictive where that we think you want to be kind of stuff.

01:36:45 ◼   ► Like it's to really kind of get it right would be my assumption is

01:36:48 ◼   ► a lot of that going on here too.

01:36:50 ◼   ► Um so yeah, I I think I again I need to try it myself

01:36:54 ◼   ► to really kind of settle on it.

01:36:56 ◼   ► But I'm pleased with where they've ended up uh with this, I think.

01:37:00 ◼   ► I think so too.

01:37:01 ◼   ► Uh I think it's very carefully thought out.

01:37:04 ◼   ► And yeah the Steve Jobs quote is really old.

01:37:06 ◼   ► It's from a different time.

01:37:08 ◼   ► Yep.

01:37:08 ◼   ► And It's there's a framing of this of like, oh, Apple's going back on

01:37:14 ◼   ► 16 years.

01:37:15 ◼   ► Like, I mean, maybe the touch bar I think was a was clearly like

01:37:21 ◼   ► a middle ground approach.

01:37:22 ◼   ► Like, well, we're not doing a screen, but we'll do this like weirdo let

01:37:25 ◼   ► thing and you can slide around and it just didn't work.

01:37:27 ◼   ► Part of that's because Apple never invested in it software wise and it didn't

01:37:31 ◼   ► really go anywhere.

01:37:33 ◼   ► This will be different, I think.

01:37:35 ◼   ► Um I think this makes much more sense.

01:37:38 ◼   ► Well they're not gonna reverse course.

01:37:39 ◼   ► No.

01:37:40 ◼   ► Like they did with the touch bar.

01:37:41 ◼   ► Like you're you're not gonna get like the next MacBook Pro is not gonna

01:37:44 ◼   ► be a non touch screen MacBook Pro.

01:37:47 ◼   ► That's right.

01:37:47 ◼   ► Uh this is this is the way forward and

01:37:52 ◼   ► again, because it's additive, if you don't care about it, you just never have

01:37:56 ◼   ► to use it.

01:37:57 ◼   ► Right.

01:37:57 ◼   ► One of the problems with the touch bar uh out of many was that

01:38:01 ◼   ► it was forced upon you no matter what.

01:38:03 ◼   ► It took stuff away.

01:38:04 ◼   ► It did.

01:38:04 ◼   ► It took the escape key away, which made everybody angry.

01:38:06 ◼   ► They added that back.

01:38:08 ◼   ► But if you were a person to ever change screen brightness or volume, you

01:38:12 ◼   ► had to interact with it.

01:38:13 ◼   ► You had to deal with it.

01:38:14 ◼   ► And this is not that way.

01:38:17 ◼   ► You could buy one of these, like Jason, right?

01:38:19 ◼   ► Jason uses, we have the same laptop.

01:38:21 ◼   ► He's M4 Max MacBook Pro.

01:38:23 ◼   ► He uses his closed and a stand with a display.

01:38:26 ◼   ► Mine is open, his is closed.

01:38:28 ◼   ► Jason could buy one of these, close it, stick it in that stand, and

01:38:32 ◼   ► never touch the screen in four years of ownership.

01:38:35 ◼   ► And And it's not gonna now not work.

01:38:37 ◼   ► And it's yeah, and you're not gonna miss anything from it.

01:38:41 ◼   ► And that that's the key difference here.

01:38:44 ◼   ► Yep.

01:38:44 ◼   ► Between this and the touch bar.

01:38:46 ◼   ► And so yeah, Apple drug its feet, but that's what Apple does, right?

01:38:49 ◼   ► Apple says, uh, there's gonna be video on the iPod, and there is a

01:38:52 ◼   ► year later.

01:38:53 ◼   ► It's harping on this quote and saying, Oh my God, apples are total Apple's

01:38:59 ◼   ► totally reverse course.

01:39:00 ◼   ► Like it's just not as spicy as people think it is.

01:39:03 ◼   ► It just isn't and it's an ancient quote from a guy who's n hasn't

01:39:06 ◼   ► been around in a long time, sadly, and products have changed greatly and expectations

01:39:14 ◼   ► have changed greatly.

01:39:16 ◼   ► Because there are people who absolutely want touch on a laptop and there are

01:39:20 ◼   ► absolutely people who do not want it.

01:39:22 ◼   ► Right.

01:39:22 ◼   ► There's all sorts of all sorts of consumers out there.

01:39:25 ◼   ► And so Apple has found a way to offer this,

01:39:29 ◼   ► perhaps make this machine more approachable to a new class of people who, like

01:39:35 ◼   ► Federico so wisely wrote, ex Expect to be able to touch their computers because

01:39:40 ◼   ► all their computers they've had to this point you can touch.

01:39:43 ◼   ► Right?

01:39:44 ◼   ► I think about my kids, right?

01:39:45 ◼   ► My kids are uh 10, 16, and 17, and they've grown up in the

01:39:52 ◼   ► iPad era, you know, since they've been using computers.

01:39:55 ◼   ► And now they ha use laptops for schools.

01:39:58 ◼   ► And you can see it break their brains a little bit that they can't

01:40:01 ◼   ► reach up and touch the screen of a MacBook Neo and scroll it.

01:40:05 ◼   ► Um, and that is only gonna continue to be the case.

01:40:08 ◼   ► And so you've gotta address that.

01:40:10 ◼   ► They did it in a way that makes a lot of sense.

01:40:11 ◼   ► It doesn't Mac experience for everybody else.

01:40:15 ◼   ► And do you really want like if you're really hung up on that quote,

01:40:19 ◼   ► my question for you is this.

01:40:21 ◼   ► Do you want Apple to be beholden to something they said fifteen years ago?

01:40:26 ◼   ► Like what other things did Apple say fifteen years ago do you want them

01:40:29 ◼   ► to be beholden to I don't think that people by and large really feel

01:40:33 ◼   ► this way.

01:40:34 ◼   ► I just think it is an e it's like an easy lead in It's

01:40:37 ◼   ► a hook.

01:40:37 ◼   ► A a hook.

01:40:38 ◼   ► And it's like how I have decided to bring into this conversation of like

01:40:42 ◼   ► it is a it is a good lens to look at things through of

01:40:46 ◼   ► like how things have changed.

01:40:48 ◼   ► And some people decide that that what they want to do is make it

01:40:50 ◼   ► like a well, so why have you changed your mind?

01:40:53 ◼   ► Well, like I just don't feel like I would need to ask that question

01:40:55 ◼   ► because I understand it.

01:40:57 ◼   ► Um but I I find it as a more of like an interesting thing

01:41:00 ◼   ► to look back on historically.

01:41:01 ◼   ► Of like there was a time when they absolutely would say this as a

01:41:05 ◼   ► company and and uh Tim Cook had a different version of it.

01:41:09 ◼   ► I think Tim Cook was the person who said zombie arms or it might

01:41:12 ◼   ► have been Craig Federigi, but it wasn't Steve Jobs.

01:41:14 ◼   ► People, I believe, misattribute that part of the quote to Jobs when Jobs said

01:41:20 ◼   ► what we played, where he was just saying like it doesn't work.

01:41:23 ◼   ► I love that phrase.

01:41:24 ◼   ► It gives great demo.

01:41:25 ◼   ► So it's like a very good f like turn of phrase that I like,

01:41:29 ◼   ► that the word choice that you have.

01:41:30 ◼   ► Um but so I just think people like use it.

01:41:33 ◼   ► I mean even Levy, right?

01:41:34 ◼   ► Like an and I understand why, like if you're if you're given the exclusive,

01:41:37 ◼   ► you would you would this is the the angle you would take.

01:41:40 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:41:40 ◼   ► And he presses them on it.

01:41:41 ◼   ► And I and I actually think it's good though because it because Levy has

01:41:45 ◼   ► the access, we are kind of getting the answers.

01:41:48 ◼   ► So this is from John Turners.

01:41:49 ◼   ► He said we needed to get to a point where adding touch didn't make

01:41:53 ◼   ► the product lesser in any way.

01:41:54 ◼   ► It didn't make it heavier.

01:41:56 ◼   ► It didn't thicker.

01:41:57 ◼   ► That came together with the OLED screen, the best display put in the Mac,

01:42:01 ◼   ► all of these things and oh yeah, it has touch as well.

01:42:04 ◼   ► So like that's you know for what that is what they are saying, you

01:42:08 ◼   ► know, how I'm sure there's a little bit of that, there's a little bit

01:42:11 ◼   ► of something else, but that is like a thing where they wanted to make

01:42:13 ◼   ► sure that they could make the experience great and that it wasn't going to

01:42:17 ◼   ► undermine the computer in any way.

01:42:19 ◼   ► Uh and Suruji says, uh Johnny Suruji, ten years is a very, very long

01:42:24 ◼   ► time.

01:42:24 ◼   ► Many things have changed, whether it's display technology, custom silicon, etc.

01:42:29 ◼   ► Um, and said that like all of that together kind of met the bar

01:42:32 ◼   ► that Apple has and so they were willing to do it.

01:42:35 ◼   ► Um I like my engineers to be gated by physics, not imagination or timelines.

01:42:39 ◼   ► Wow.

01:42:39 ◼   ► Which is fun.

01:42:41 ◼   ► Uh tough It's interesting too, because he talks uh or he talks about Schiller

01:42:47 ◼   ► and apparently he interviewed Schiller uh in the touch bar era.

01:42:52 ◼   ► Yep.

01:42:53 ◼   ► And uh Schiller said, you know, you can't optimize both for touch and keyboard

01:42:58 ◼   ► and trackpad uh and he said we absolutely came away from uh user testing

01:43:03 ◼   ► with the belief that it isn't to do.

01:43:05 ◼   ► Our instincts were correct.

01:43:07 ◼   ► So that's ten years ago, right?

01:43:09 ◼   ► Jobs quote is fifteen years ago, this is ten years ago.

01:43:12 ◼   ► Um, you know, maybe this is why Phil Siller left.

01:43:15 ◼   ► Maybe he was really against touch.

01:43:16 ◼   ► I'm just kidding.

01:43:17 ◼   ► Maybe I I like that Stephen Levy like he puts it in the articles,

01:43:20 ◼   ► like I asked to speak to Phil again and they just laughed.

01:43:22 ◼   ► And it's like he was like, Come on, get let's make him answer for

01:43:26 ◼   ► his sins.

01:43:27 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:43:28 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:43:29 ◼   ► And internus, apparently in 2021, told Joanna Stern kind of similar things.

01:43:33 ◼   ► But look, things change.

01:43:35 ◼   ► No, because it's marketing.

01:43:36 ◼   ► This is what I was saying earlier, right?

01:43:38 ◼   ► It's like it doesn't matter what they do or don't believe, right?

01:43:42 ◼   ► They have to tell you the thing.

01:43:43 ◼   ► They can't be like, oh yeah, man.

01:43:46 ◼   ► Touch screens, so much better.

01:43:48 ◼   ► We don't offer one.

01:43:49 ◼   ► You should probably go down the road, right?

01:43:50 ◼   ► Like buy from someone else.

01:43:52 ◼   ► Like, yeah.

01:43:53 ◼   ► There isn't like a a c a grand conspiracy here.

01:43:56 ◼   ► It's just like this is just what else are you supposed to do?

01:44:00 ◼   ► You know?

01:44:02 ◼   ► Very funny stuff.

01:44:06 ◼   ► It'll be cool when it comes to other Macs.

01:44:09 ◼   ► You know?

01:44:10 ◼   ► Oh yeah.

01:44:10 ◼   ► That aren't eight thousand dollars.

01:44:12 ◼   ► Oh yeah.

01:44:12 ◼   ► What about uh what about desktops?

01:44:15 ◼   ► Even in the PC world, right?

01:44:17 ◼   ► Touch is on a lot of notebooks.

01:44:20 ◼   ► Microsoft had that weird iMac kind of thing that had touch and like the

01:44:23 ◼   ► dial and stuff, a lot of interesting ideas there actually.

01:44:26 ◼   ► Um I don't I don't see them rushing to put this on the iMac

01:44:30 ◼   ► or the next studio display, like you know.

01:44:35 ◼   ► The if they if they do the laptops, they've hit most of their users.

01:44:37 ◼   ► And I feel like that's enough.

01:44:39 ◼   ► But do you think that there's a world where this this migrates further?

01:44:45 ◼   ► I mean

01:44:47 ◼   ► Sure.

01:44:48 ◼   ► I mean I think they'll they'll put a touch screen on everything

01:44:53 ◼   ► everything in time.

01:44:55 ◼   ► Think so?

01:44:56 ◼   ► Yeah, I mean why not?

01:44:58 ◼   ► It's how you interact with a computer now.

01:45:01 ◼   ► Hmm.

01:45:02 ◼   ► Like what do you think they wouldn't?

01:45:04 ◼   ► Uh I maybe just cause no one has other than that weird Microsoft product.

01:45:09 ◼   ► I think there are some like all in ones that in the PC world

01:45:12 ◼   ► that have it, but may maybe so.

01:45:15 ◼   ► And maybe it's technology issue that like bigger screens, you know, maybe that's a

01:45:18 ◼   ► a different set of challenges.

01:45:20 ◼   ► I don't think it this is a very long time frame where also a

01:45:25 ◼   ► bunch of other stuff has to change, right?

01:45:27 ◼   ► That like

01:45:29 ◼   ► there is maybe an a a an ergonomic question of m being able to

01:45:33 ◼   ► move the screen down towards you like that Microsoft Surface Studio thing, right?

01:45:38 ◼   ► But like I I on you know, on an as the the the the

01:45:42 ◼   ► phrase goes, on an infinite timescale, yes I do think everything would have touch.

01:45:47 ◼   ► But I think that d i desktop displays, that is a very long way

01:45:52 ◼   ► away from now.

01:45:53 ◼   ► But I just think at a certain point it just becomes too difficult to

01:45:57 ◼   ► make a non-touch display.

01:46:00 ◼   ► Like how how far into the future does it get before like just this

01:46:05 ◼   ► is just how these things are made?

01:46:07 ◼   ► Like they're they're made with the expectation that they're touch screens.

01:46:10 ◼   ► Yeah, maybe so.

01:46:12 ◼   ► Yeah, an infinite time scale.

01:46:14 ◼   ► I think that that could that's probably right.

01:46:16 ◼   ► Um, I don't see them rushing headlong into it.

01:46:20 ◼   ► It's a long path.

01:46:22 ◼   ► I think it is.

01:46:23 ◼   ► I do hope it's not a thousand years before it shows up on the

01:46:25 ◼   ► MacBook Air.

01:46:26 ◼   ► I think it's a few years.

01:46:28 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:46:28 ◼   ► Which is a shame.

01:46:30 ◼   ► I would like it to be the next one, but I don't think they're

01:46:32 ◼   ► gonna do that.

01:46:33 ◼   ► It makes a lot of sense on a consumer device.

01:46:35 ◼   ► Yes.

01:46:36 ◼   ► You know, like let alone the Neo.

01:46:37 ◼   ► I mean, who knows?

01:46:39 ◼   ► But

01:46:40 ◼   ► it would be it'll be interesting to see because they've tied it with this

01:46:44 ◼   ► to this amazing OLED panel.

01:46:47 ◼   ► They don't have to, right?

01:46:49 ◼   ► They they can do it like we were talking about earlier with the MacBook

01:46:51 ◼   ► Air.

01:46:52 ◼   ► They can do it with other display types.

01:46:53 ◼   ► I'm hoping they do.

01:46:56 ◼   ► If anything, so like the whole line has it.

01:46:58 ◼   ► It just makes sense for the whole line to have it.

01:47:00 ◼   ► The MacBook Pro as well is the MacBook Air as well as having a

01:47:03 ◼   ► touch screen, should also have an OLED screen at this point.

01:47:06 ◼   ► Hmm.

01:47:07 ◼   ► A lot of cheaper devices do.

01:47:10 ◼   ► Yes.

01:47:11 ◼   ► A lot of cheaper devices do.

01:47:12 ◼   ► A lot of competitor products do.

01:47:14 ◼   ► They wait because they can, but I I would like I would like I

01:47:19 ◼   ► would be very happy

01:47:21 ◼   ► that the next MacBook Pro update is an OLED touch screen.

01:47:24 ◼   ► Doesn't have to be this one.

01:47:25 ◼   ► Mm-hmm.

01:47:26 ◼   ► I don't wouldn't expect I don't want it to be this display.

01:47:29 ◼   ► It's too much, right?

01:47:30 ◼   ► But like we have OLED again, I just keep coming back to the iPhone.

01:47:35 ◼   ► The iPhone the regular iPhone is a hundred and twenty hertz refresh rate OLED

01:47:43 ◼   ► touch screen.

01:47:44 ◼   ► Why can't the MacBook Air also have that?

01:47:47 ◼   ► I know it's a bigger screen, but like why can't we have that too?

01:47:52 ◼   ► So I I want you know for me it's like I I know the

01:47:55 ◼   ► the realism of it all, but I also feel like we should continue to

01:47:59 ◼   ► push on them and this is something that I I believe that they should

01:48:02 ◼   ► they should advance quite quickly.

01:48:04 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:48:05 ◼   ► They won't, but I want them to.

01:48:07 ◼   ► Maybe they will.

01:48:08 ◼   ► Maybe maybe Turnus wants to to move faster on these things.

01:48:11 ◼   ► I y maybe.

01:48:13 ◼   ► I I I think I think we will see a a touch screen MacBook

01:48:17 ◼   ► air in twenty twenty eight.

01:48:18 ◼   ► That's what I think.

01:48:19 ◼   ► I would love it to be sooner, but my my bet is twenty twenty

01:48:22 ◼   ► eight.

01:48:22 ◼   ► All right.

01:48:22 ◼   ► Well we're doing annual picks pretty soon, so you could you could have a

01:48:25 ◼   ► negative pick.

01:48:27 ◼   ► Touch screen map gear does not come in twenty twenty seven.

01:48:30 ◼   ► Yeah, I mean that is a pick that I would be willing to make,

01:48:33 ◼   ► but I'm not gonna talk about that yet.

01:48:35 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:48:36 ◼   ► That is coming up soon.

01:48:38 ◼   ► Horrifyingly.

01:48:40 ◼   ► Mm-hmm.

01:48:42 ◼   ► I actually had that meme happen to me yesterday where I like I was

01:48:47 ◼   ► like, man, what a week.

01:48:49 ◼   ► It's like, oh wait, no wait, it's Wednesday.

01:48:51 ◼   ► Oh dude, I know.

01:48:52 ◼   ► I genuinely had that thought.

01:48:54 ◼   ► I know it's a meme that people use a lot.

01:48:56 ◼   ► And you know me.

01:48:57 ◼   ► I find that annoying because people use it a lot.

01:49:00 ◼   ► But like it genuinely actually happened in my own brain.

01:49:02 ◼   ► So I I meme myself.

01:49:04 ◼   ► That's weird.

01:49:05 ◼   ► The one I often have is Hello fellow kids.

01:49:08 ◼   ► Yeah.

01:49:08 ◼   ► Yeah, I can see that.

01:49:09 ◼   ► I mean you are what is it, forty eight we decided earlier on?

01:49:12 ◼   ► N forty six, that was it, yep.

01:49:14 ◼   ► You did say I was forty eight when I was gone, I think.

01:49:17 ◼   ► Did I?

01:49:18 ◼   ► Yeah, I think you did.

01:49:19 ◼   ► Ah, I mean what's a year or two?

01:49:21 ◼   ► Oh my god.

01:49:25 ◼   ► Well, what a week.

01:49:26 ◼   ► Uh the f September's not over though, right?

01:49:29 ◼   ► We've got uh home view reviews in a couple weeks.

01:49:32 ◼   ► MacBook Pro reviews.

01:49:34 ◼   ► MacBook Pro reviews.

01:49:36 ◼   ► It's offered to Apple T V four K reviews.

01:49:38 ◼   ► HomePod Mini Two.

01:49:39 ◼   ► I think that ships today.

01:49:41 ◼   ► The Home Pod Mini Two, I've already seen people unboxing that.

01:49:44 ◼   ► It's that is as much as any as they're getting.

01:49:47 ◼   ► You know, like we're not getting reviews.

01:49:49 ◼   ► We're getting unboxings.

01:49:50 ◼   ► And I assume the Apple T V would be in a similar case, but

01:49:54 ◼   ► I don't know if they've really actually given review units to anyone.

01:49:59 ◼   ► Um I mean surely, surely not.

01:50:01 ◼   ► Did did you buy any of that stuff?

01:50:03 ◼   ► Any any small home things?

01:50:05 ◼   ► No.

01:50:05 ◼   ► I mean I have a home view on order.

01:50:07 ◼   ► Yeah, me too.

01:50:08 ◼   ► But not the not the other stuff.

01:50:11 ◼   ► Okay.

01:50:12 ◼   ► It's funny, the uh original home pod mini is getting like the color thing

01:50:17 ◼   ► on the little display.

01:50:20 ◼   ► Is it?

01:50:21 ◼   ► Yeah, you have to enable it in settings.

01:50:23 ◼   ► You can turn it on sound glow.

01:50:25 ◼   ► Display ambient light that responds to the colors and rhythm of what's playing.

01:50:29 ◼   ► Oh, that's really funny.
