00:01:08   Jason L it's time for us to take another [TS]

00:01:09   trip into the world of video games and [TS]

00:01:11   I've got an excellent panel here to talk [TS]

00:01:13   about a couple of games that we've been [TS]

00:01:14   claiming we're going to talk about for I [TS]

00:01:17   don't know a couple years now and we [TS]

00:01:18   finally got around to it so this is not [TS]

00:01:20   on the cutting edge of gaming but it is [TS]

00:01:22   a couple of old favorites that people [TS]

00:01:24   kept asking when you're going to talk [TS]

00:01:26   about portal and portal 2 and the answer [TS]

00:01:28   is now right now you are so if you're [TS]

00:01:31   just tuning in randomly to this podcast [TS]

00:01:32   hoping in vain that finally we might [TS]

00:01:35   cover portal you are really lucky person [TS]

00:01:37   and haven't read your podcast app [TS]

00:01:39   because this is our portal episode let [TS]

00:01:41   me introduce my panel was going to talk [TS]

00:01:43   about Porter with me in the standing in [TS]

00:01:46   the blue portal Tony sindelar hello [TS]

00:01:48   hello [TS]

00:01:50   I think we can put our differences [TS]

00:01:51   behind us for science you monster [TS]

00:01:54   I I appreciate that standing in the [TS]

00:01:57   orange portal [TS]

00:01:58   oh that's like the back side of Tony [TS]

00:02:00   step out of the way Tony it sorry John [TS]

00:02:03   siracusa hello Jason [TS]

00:02:05   the only thing you've managed to break [TS]

00:02:06   so far as my heart we have returning [TS]

00:02:09   this is like a little last of us episode [TS]

00:02:11   reunion standing on the orange gel it's [TS]

00:02:14   tiffany Arment hello hi i am beyond [TS]

00:02:18   excited you have no idea [TS]

00:02:19   well maybe twitter has an idea yeah [TS]

00:02:21   you've been yeah you've been going out [TS]

00:02:22   it's very excited i like this game like [TS]

00:02:24   I like Star Wars like people like Star [TS]

00:02:26   what I'll also excited and bouncing up [TS]

00:02:28   and down on the blue gel its Brianna Wu [TS]

00:02:30   hello what's crackalackin portals i had [TS]

00:02:34   i know i had a whole portal quote ready [TS]

00:02:37   but these two guys stole it thanks [TS]

00:02:39   well i'm just going to default back to [TS]

00:02:41   crackling already took the obvious one I [TS]

00:02:42   took obscure I was nice i'm glad nobody [TS]

00:02:45   said the cake is a lie that's a little [TS]

00:02:48   too you know it's getting weird sounds [TS]

00:02:50   solid cast without saying that but Jason [TS]

00:02:52   blows and immediately got to do it yeah [TS]

00:02:53   that's gonna get out the way you clear [TS]

00:02:55   it just clear the room and then yeah [TS]

00:02:57   we're desperate everybody gets the [TS]

00:02:59   harmon yep exactly have a theory of [TS]

00:03:02   comedy got here you need me to the chaos [TS]

00:03:04   anyway do not look into the operational [TS]

00:03:07   end of the device i first discovered [TS]

00:03:10   these games completely backward in the [TS]

00:03:12   sense of I had not heard of this game [TS]

00:03:16   until india not co put [TS]

00:03:18   still alive on his holiday playlist [TS]

00:03:20   which is not holiday feet what year was [TS]

00:03:23   this case about 2008 something like that [TS]

00:03:26   not that bad then [TS]

00:03:27   no but I didn't play the game for [TS]

00:03:29   another couple here is probably i don't [TS]

00:03:32   know i played this game it's been awhile [TS]

00:03:33   i I didn't play this last week or [TS]

00:03:36   anything [TS]

00:03:37   and.and you who are all much better at [TS]

00:03:39   games and i am correct me but it sounds [TS]

00:03:42   like this was a small part of a game [TS]

00:03:46   package and and it's not that long a [TS]

00:03:48   game the original portal but it became a [TS]

00:03:51   phenomenon because then i kept on [TS]

00:03:53   hearing people talk about portal and and [TS]

00:03:55   and then I had to play it so it seems [TS]

00:03:58   like what was this kind of an accidental [TS]

00:04:00   hit that it was meant to just be playing [TS]

00:04:01   because I spend it was so the original [TS]

00:04:04   version of it for those who aren't [TS]

00:04:05   familiar was packaged with this thing [TS]

00:04:07   called the orange box which was valid [TS]

00:04:09   collection of you know half-life 2 and [TS]

00:04:11   some half-life two expansions that never [TS]

00:04:14   got finished and the new version of team [TS]

00:04:15   fortress and then they have this portal [TS]

00:04:17   game that was kind of talked on there [TS]

00:04:18   and was sold as the orange box for you [TS]

00:04:21   know the last generation of consoles and [TS]

00:04:23   you know it's kind of contact on there [TS]

00:04:26   and I it seems like probably they were [TS]

00:04:27   not prepared for it to be as huge a [TS]

00:04:29   success i mean i think everything valve [TS]

00:04:30   makes it is pretty good and you know [TS]

00:04:32   they have a pretty consistent hit [TS]

00:04:35   delivery system but but yeah portal kind [TS]

00:04:37   of really took off it was really [TS]

00:04:38   exciting i remember playing it on a [TS]

00:04:39   friends xbox 360 in a dark time before i [TS]

00:04:42   had an xbox 360 and it was you know one [TS]

00:04:45   of those friends was like you need to [TS]

00:04:46   play this game come to my house and play [TS]

00:04:48   it in one sitting and i did that and [TS]

00:04:50   then I went and bought an xbox 360 and [TS]

00:04:52   my own copy of portal not that long [TS]

00:04:53   after that you played on the console i [TS]

00:04:55   watch out for the pc first and i didn't [TS]

00:04:58   get looking at with the UH the wikipedia [TS]

00:05:01   page says they both came out the same [TS]

00:05:02   time windows and xbox i would recommend [TS]

00:05:04   not playing this on a console really [TS]

00:05:06   like any first-person shooter it is much [TS]

00:05:09   easier i would probably buy it via Steam [TS]

00:05:10   right now is how i would do it if you [TS]

00:05:12   have a Mac or a windows computer or a [TS]

00:05:14   linux computer you could just do that if [TS]

00:05:15   you don't want to concentrate we should [TS]

00:05:17   establish what devices we played this on [TS]

00:05:19   then I played I played both of them on [TS]

00:05:20   my mac that that's what I did these the [TS]

00:05:23   I didn't use a console for either of [TS]

00:05:24   them [TS]

00:05:25   i also did Mac for both and all I played [TS]

00:05:29   on everything ok [TS]

00:05:31   yeah fair enough i had win they'll beat [TS]

00:05:34   us everything i'm not trying to win i'm [TS]

00:05:36   just saying like about anything you [TS]

00:05:38   don't like people people have complained [TS]

00:05:40   about like the controls on console you [TS]

00:05:43   have been like okay well let's evaluate [TS]

00:05:44   this so I beat no it's not a long game [TS]

00:05:47   like it's a it's an afternoon Nina stop [TS]

00:05:49   beating them on console and also pc i [TS]

00:05:52   played on the 360 and I play a lot of [TS]

00:05:54   pipe laid a lot of first-person shooters [TS]

00:05:55   on the 360 I don't really have any [TS]

00:05:56   trouble with the controls it for me my [TS]

00:05:59   the first person shooters that I've [TS]

00:06:01   always played you know when I was when I [TS]

00:06:03   look start playing them where I'm on the [TS]

00:06:05   macbook marathon marathon to the whole [TS]

00:06:07   marathon series and and and unreal [TS]

00:06:10   tournament and some other stuff like [TS]

00:06:11   that and so when when portal came out [TS]

00:06:13   and and then many years later i bought [TS]

00:06:16   it i want to play it on the mac because [TS]

00:06:17   I felt like I actually had the muscle [TS]

00:06:19   memory from that and I struggle with [TS]

00:06:20   first-person shooters on consoles [TS]

00:06:22   because I learn how to play them on the [TS]

00:06:24   keyboard and pointing demise and so it [TS]

00:06:28   was a great nostalgia trip for me [TS]

00:06:29   because I had that all immediately [TS]

00:06:31   snapped back the whole you know wasd [TS]

00:06:33   move kind of thing man i was that was so [TS]

00:06:37   that was great so on one level portal [TS]

00:06:39   was just a a wonderful just hit a [TS]

00:06:42   nostalgic because i hadn't played a [TS]

00:06:43   first-person game on my back in a long [TS]

00:06:47   time and not that many on consoles at [TS]

00:06:49   that moment I think it's also as far as [TS]

00:06:50   a first person goes it's pretty [TS]

00:06:52   forgiving right i mean there's obviously [TS]

00:06:54   some stuff that's timing involved but [TS]

00:06:56   not a lot and it's not a lot of that [TS]

00:06:58   kind of twitch reaction it's not like [TS]

00:07:00   playing counter-strike or something like [TS]

00:07:02   that word [TS]

00:07:02   it's you know it's all about the [TS]

00:07:03   milliseconds of clicking or anything [TS]

00:07:05   like that it's it's pretty forgiving and [TS]

00:07:07   fact if you overthink it as i did when i [TS]

00:07:09   was playing it for a lot of the sections [TS]

00:07:11   where you're flipping through portals [TS]

00:07:12   and and you doing lots of momentum moves [TS]

00:07:14   if you just don't touch the mouse it [TS]

00:07:16   will realign your viewpoint in like [TS]

00:07:18   based on the new based on the current [TS]

00:07:20   new gravity but if you're a first person [TS]

00:07:22   shooter player you don't expect your [TS]

00:07:24   viewpoint or especially on a pc you [TS]

00:07:26   don't expect your viewpoint to ever be [TS]

00:07:27   realigned unless you move them out so [TS]

00:07:28   the first time i played one of the [TS]

00:07:30   board's important woman to take [TS]

00:07:31   platforms i always constantly as soon as [TS]

00:07:33   I came out of a portal I was readjusted [TS]

00:07:34   in my view to be facing the right [TS]

00:07:36   direction and at the same time the game [TS]

00:07:38   was trying to readjust my view [TS]

00:07:39   yeah and it was like why is this so hard [TS]

00:07:41   until I said oh just don't touch the [TS]

00:07:43   mouse and just realize you to the new [TS]

00:07:44   girl [TS]

00:07:45   30 and you're fine and yeah it's very [TS]

00:07:47   easy to overthink it even i even i did [TS]

00:07:49   that because I remember that that was [TS]

00:07:51   the case with something like marathon [TS]

00:07:52   you would have to reorient and and I [TS]

00:07:54   would go through a portal and be like [TS]

00:07:55   wait a second wait a second if I do [TS]

00:07:57   nothing i'm looking in the right [TS]

00:07:59   direction [TS]

00:08:00   yeah it's made to its the bar is low but [TS]

00:08:02   if there is there is still a bar because [TS]

00:08:04   as I've tried to get other people to [TS]

00:08:06   play this game thought oh this is a [TS]

00:08:07   great game you can play it in like an [TS]

00:08:08   hour to part of one that is and and it's [TS]

00:08:11   fun and it's got a narrative and it's [TS]

00:08:13   very interesting and we'll talk about [TS]

00:08:14   all the good quality so I'd say out you [TS]

00:08:16   you may not be a gamer but try this game [TS]

00:08:18   and then just to watch people really [TS]

00:08:19   fail to orient themselves in a [TS]

00:08:21   first-person shooter because even though [TS]

00:08:23   it seems natural for us it is a fairly [TS]

00:08:25   alien concept [TS]

00:08:27   no matter what maybe it's probably [TS]

00:08:28   easier on the console but I think even [TS]

00:08:29   then people just look at the screen and [TS]

00:08:31   a bunch of thumb sticks and or you know [TS]

00:08:33   look at the screen and a mouse and a [TS]

00:08:34   keyboard and just don't understand how [TS]

00:08:36   to navigate that world that's it [TS]

00:08:38   everyone real big barrier to enjoying [TS]

00:08:40   this game because you do need some basic [TS]

00:08:41   ability to conceptualize the space and [TS]

00:08:43   move through it [TS]

00:08:44   yeah I mean I think anyone who's watched [TS]

00:08:46   somebody try to play a first-person [TS]

00:08:47   shooter for the first time maybe whether [TS]

00:08:50   it's a you know a child or that person's [TS]

00:08:52   parent or something like that it's [TS]

00:08:53   there's not all that kind of natural [TS]

00:08:55   take to it i mean i think we kind of [TS]

00:08:56   take for granted if you can you kind of [TS]

00:08:58   grew up on it that there's no you don't [TS]

00:09:01   just instantly jump in and are able to [TS]

00:09:02   navigate 3d world with you know wasd and [TS]

00:09:05   a mouse right let's learn skill for me [TS]

00:09:08   portal was kind of an easy transition on [TS]

00:09:10   the mac from playing half-life I mean [TS]

00:09:12   because it was just all yeah and it was [TS]

00:09:14   exactly the same like the controls are [TS]

00:09:16   all the same and the world's extremely [TS]

00:09:18   similar and yeah so that from for me it [TS]

00:09:21   was kind of just that how it happened I [TS]

00:09:23   can't even imagine playing it on a [TS]

00:09:24   console i can't do it i have to say I'll [TS]

00:09:27   you know i was i was really impressed by [TS]

00:09:30   how much better the console controls [TS]

00:09:35   were between portal one in portal to you [TS]

00:09:37   can tell they took a lot of time [TS]

00:09:39   particularly with the light momentum [TS]

00:09:41   puzzle algorithm and I i have to say [TS]

00:09:45   like I thought I I understand where [TS]

00:09:47   people are coming from with it being [TS]

00:09:49   walking on for portal one but I thought [TS]

00:09:52   portal 2i played on console and just [TS]

00:09:55   enjoyed it greatly [TS]

00:09:57   honestly like portal is such an easy [TS]

00:09:59   game to begin with I didn't think it was [TS]

00:10:01   that hard even on you know 360 or you [TS]

00:10:04   know [TS]

00:10:05   yeah we're plated yeah the guy i try to [TS]

00:10:10   explain this bill I think you're right [TS]

00:10:11   that there's this fundamental literacy [TS]

00:10:12   about about first-person shooters and [TS]

00:10:14   moving into 3d World and using abstract [TS]

00:10:17   controls to control you know your [TS]

00:10:19   perspective and that we can take for [TS]

00:10:21   granted as being something that that you [TS]

00:10:23   know well of course it's a shooter it's [TS]

00:10:24   fine it makes sense beyond that though [TS]

00:10:27   one of the things I really like about it [TS]

00:10:29   is as somebody who's not you know you [TS]

00:10:32   like I struggled with the last of us it [TS]

00:10:34   is easier this is true but i also love [TS]

00:10:37   that it was as people always say the [TS]

00:10:39   first person puzzler i love that it used [TS]

00:10:42   the the skills i had built up such as [TS]

00:10:45   they were the literacy of first-person [TS]

00:10:46   shooters to solve puzzles i'm really [TS]

00:10:49   interested in like how games teach [TS]

00:10:50   things and portal does a great job of [TS]

00:10:53   teaching you how to play Portal alright [TS]

00:10:55   it builds really incremental II um I [TS]

00:10:57   mean the puzzles are all really nicely [TS]

00:10:59   designed and you know they're not too [TS]

00:11:01   hard and you still get that kind of [TS]

00:11:02   satisfying aha moment but it does a [TS]

00:11:05   really good job especially I think [TS]

00:11:06   portal to it doesn't even better job let [TS]

00:11:08   things unfold and they still they keep [TS]

00:11:10   adding new mechanics to a portal to all [TS]

00:11:13   throughout portal 2 and there's so many [TS]

00:11:14   games where it's like the mechanics are [TS]

00:11:16   front-loaded right we're going to teach [TS]

00:11:18   you everything you need to know how to [TS]

00:11:19   play the game in the first two hours and [TS]

00:11:21   then you're gonna do that over and over [TS]

00:11:22   again for 6 to 10 more hours right [TS]

00:11:24   portal to keep adding to that he keeps [TS]

00:11:26   teaching your new things and new ways [TS]

00:11:28   that things are going to intercept it [TS]

00:11:29   and it doesn't equate the way thats you [TS]

00:11:31   know really fun to play a little bit [TS]

00:11:34   like school though because if you miss a [TS]

00:11:36   lesson again having watched people and [TS]

00:11:38   try to get people to play this game and [TS]

00:11:39   appreciate if you miss a lesson like [TS]

00:11:40   you're absent today or you don't pay [TS]

00:11:42   attention because of your 4runner 12 [TS]

00:11:45   teachers particular concept and if you [TS]

00:11:47   never really get that concept and just [TS]

00:11:49   fumbled through level or forget that [TS]

00:11:50   concept you can be just sitting there [TS]

00:11:52   and stuck not on the navigating 3d world [TS]

00:11:55   but like that's the other aspect of this [TS]

00:11:56   game like so 3d worlds one thing if [TS]

00:11:58   you're good first-person jersey have no [TS]

00:11:59   problem with the second aspect of this [TS]

00:12:01   game is do you have any aptitude for [TS]

00:12:04   enthusiasm for puzzles and figuring out [TS]

00:12:08   how to do that [TS]

00:12:09   puzzles realize on you remembering the [TS]

00:12:11   very simple you know steps that are laid [TS]

00:12:12   out before this is out portals but they [TS]

00:12:14   don't even give it a second portal for [TS]

00:12:15   all the second part works as a memento [TS]

00:12:17   marks in portals there's a few [TS]

00:12:19   strategies you can do that through [TS]

00:12:20   elements in is the buttons work this out [TS]

00:12:22   the turrets were you know all three [TS]

00:12:24   things like Tony said portal to just has [TS]

00:12:26   a million of those throughout the whole [TS]

00:12:27   game but even portal one if you forget a [TS]

00:12:29   single one of those and like the first [TS]

00:12:31   couple levels it can be you can be like [TS]

00:12:33   that adventure game where you just back [TS]

00:12:35   in the old days we'd said you'd spend [TS]

00:12:36   months stuck like in a room 100 venture [TS]

00:12:39   game because there was no internet and [TS]

00:12:40   you can figure it out and when you did [TS]

00:12:42   you just felt like a dunce it i don't [TS]

00:12:44   think that will happen to anybody who is [TS]

00:12:45   remotely good at puzzles but a [TS]

00:12:47   surprising number of people who are good [TS]

00:12:49   at first person shooters have no [TS]

00:12:51   interest in puzzles whatsoever when I [TS]

00:12:53   think this game is as a weird mix of [TS]

00:12:55   like I mean there are some very specific [TS]

00:12:56   type of puzzle in that they're all these [TS]

00:12:58   kind of spatial reasoning puzzles right [TS]

00:12:59   now so i mean i think a lot of people [TS]

00:13:01   who are familiar with first-person [TS]

00:13:03   shooters build up some spatial reasoning [TS]

00:13:04   abilities and their ability to kind of [TS]

00:13:06   navigate 3d space but you know there's [TS]

00:13:07   some people who that's gonna probably [TS]

00:13:09   not really resonate with they're not [TS]

00:13:10   going to enjoy that the big conceptual [TS]

00:13:12   hurdle is the fact that you have a [TS]

00:13:13   portal gun and that is the elbow they I [TS]

00:13:16   mean you would think that like that is [TS]

00:13:17   the most obvious thing about the game [TS]

00:13:19   like the hammer discount like is then [TS]

00:13:21   the name is the main mechanic of your [TS]

00:13:23   game and yet i will see people looking [TS]

00:13:25   at a puzzle and not being able to figure [TS]

00:13:27   out how to get from point A to point B [TS]

00:13:29   it's like her you have a part of like [TS]

00:13:31   what you learn which walls you can put [TS]

00:13:33   it on which ones you can't like if you [TS]

00:13:34   can see it at this line of sight you can [TS]

00:13:36   get there how can you get there but [TS]

00:13:38   bored there and then like they'll be [TS]

00:13:39   they'll be stuck for an hour on it even [TS]

00:13:41   after playing the game a second time I'd [TS]

00:13:42   have definitely come into those rooms [TS]

00:13:44   where I was like oh crap how am I [TS]

00:13:46   supposed to do this and then I like [TS]

00:13:47   women have reported like he did you [TS]

00:13:49   forget for a second in certain levels [TS]

00:13:51   that you have the ability to do that [TS]

00:13:54   even though that's like the basis of the [TS]

00:13:56   gamepad magic thing that goes against [TS]

00:13:58   the laws of physics yeah but you're like [TS]

00:13:59   okay I'm in this room going to solve [TS]

00:14:01   this puzzle it's getting complicated now [TS]

00:14:02   especially later in the game and then [TS]

00:14:05   office and you're like oh right i could [TS]

00:14:06   just do this and back up in here and [TS]

00:14:08   then it's done and that was the easiest [TS]

00:14:09   thing ever and i just thought about it [TS]

00:14:11   too much [TS]

00:14:11   so if you like just like John said [TS]

00:14:13   earlier if you think about it too much [TS]

00:14:14   it's over you know you you're trapped [TS]

00:14:17   I'll never forget when I kind of you [TS]

00:14:19   know like stumped for like 30 seconds on [TS]

00:14:21   like the second puzzle and portable one [TS]

00:14:23   and it's like you can shoot one portal [TS]

00:14:24   and I see the portal far away and shoot [TS]

00:14:26   a portal next to me to get there and now [TS]

00:14:29   it's like well I'm already next to the [TS]

00:14:30   fixed portal i'm stuck right and it's [TS]

00:14:32   like wait wait wait [TS]

00:14:33   oh I can shoot another reporter way and [TS]

00:14:35   then step back into the portal I just [TS]

00:14:37   get in and you know everything just [TS]

00:14:39   built from that so seamlessly it's great [TS]

00:14:41   it's also really nice how even on a [TS]

00:14:42   second playthrough or even a third [TS]

00:14:43   playthrough for some people it is still [TS]

00:14:46   you can still make challenges for [TS]

00:14:48   yourself you have already solved the [TS]

00:14:50   puzzle and you kind of know the basic [TS]

00:14:51   physics of everything and how everything [TS]

00:14:52   works and how the puzzles are our work [TS]

00:14:55   but you can kind of challenge yourself [TS]

00:14:57   to be like okay have few steps going to [TS]

00:14:59   take how few portals can I throw it [TS]

00:15:01   makes it really it makes it fun again [TS]

00:15:03   but so is ok I feel like we're kind of [TS]

00:15:06   missing the forest for the trees a [TS]

00:15:08   little bit in this discussion [TS]

00:15:09   I mean you know portal is portal is a [TS]

00:15:14   breath of fresh air in an industry that [TS]

00:15:17   is almost completely lacking in [TS]

00:15:21   innovation at times and you know this [TS]

00:15:24   comes from half-life which is a game [TS]

00:15:26   that you know is a first-person shooter [TS]

00:15:29   but has just enough of the twist on it [TS]

00:15:31   to make it an interesting and [TS]

00:15:33   significant game you know like the the [TS]

00:15:35   physics mods for for half-life two are [TS]

00:15:38   actually some of the most important [TS]

00:15:40   mechanics have ever been introduced into [TS]

00:15:42   the game industry and i think that you [TS]

00:15:44   know like the reason people are really [TS]

00:15:46   passionate about portal is it was this [TS]

00:15:50   amazing mix of an innovative different [TS]

00:15:53   mechanic that is just unlike anything [TS]

00:15:55   ever get a game this ever come before [TS]

00:15:58   it's not a game that's about mindlessly [TS]

00:16:00   destroying things yeah which practically [TS]

00:16:03   every game in this industry is about [TS]

00:16:05   including my own and you know and it [TS]

00:16:08   also has this wicked sense of humor and [TS]

00:16:12   we're we're we're living in this [TS]

00:16:14   industry where you know we just kind of [TS]

00:16:17   all not a wink at the lie you know like [TS]

00:16:20   we're all drowning and BS all day long [TS]

00:16:22   and we know it we here in commercials [TS]

00:16:25   and you know in the systems of authority [TS]

00:16:27   around us and we're just living in like [TS]

00:16:30   a very insincere society and here's a [TS]

00:16:33   name that comes along and does this [TS]

00:16:35   wickedly brilliant satire about it and [TS]

00:16:39   it was just such a fresh experience and [TS]

00:16:43   I think it's like like we don't love [TS]

00:16:45   portal because like the pc controls are [TS]

00:16:47   better than the console like we love it [TS]

00:16:49   because it's so innovative well you know [TS]

00:16:52   I i'll be honest one of the reasons why [TS]

00:16:54   i am not attracted to a lot of games [TS]

00:16:57   they come out and I do have many [TS]

00:16:58   consoles and I you know and I i do like [TS]

00:17:02   games but and this is how i felt a [TS]

00:17:03   little bit about the last of this is [TS]

00:17:05   like I get bored with shooting bullets [TS]

00:17:10   at stuff especially if it's people like [TS]

00:17:13   stuff like my favorite things in Halo [TS]

00:17:16   are like driving the vehicles around and [TS]

00:17:19   all that and there's there's and I mean [TS]

00:17:20   really talk about both games anyway [TS]

00:17:22   there is a point in Portal 2 we're just [TS]

00:17:25   not only do I enjoy the fact i should [TS]

00:17:27   close this point I'm not only do I enjoy [TS]

00:17:29   the fact that i I've got a gun in this [TS]

00:17:31   game but I don't I don't I create with [TS]

00:17:33   that I don't destroy with it and i use [TS]

00:17:35   my intelligence and and I get away from [TS]

00:17:38   that fire firing bullets and and having [TS]

00:17:41   the splash of a dead body of an alien [TS]

00:17:43   hitting the floor or some other kind of [TS]

00:17:45   enemy but then late in in Portal 2 there [TS]

00:17:48   are several there are several levels [TS]

00:17:50   where you're basically painting with the [TS]

00:17:53   level the 3d level you open portals on [TS]

00:17:56   drips of goo and then open them up [TS]

00:17:58   somewhere else and they're kind of [TS]

00:18:00   shooting out and just kind of splashing [TS]

00:18:02   everywhere and you're doing a tactically [TS]

00:18:04   and yet i found find myself really [TS]

00:18:06   enjoying just the effort of painting [TS]

00:18:10   these two these beautiful 3d levels with [TS]

00:18:12   these drops of goo just for fun just [TS]

00:18:15   because it was enjoyable and and that [TS]

00:18:17   I'd ever Mary sunshine you might like it [TS]

00:18:19   interesting [TS]

00:18:20   yeah about so I i'm totally with you [TS]

00:18:22   there that I I totally get the first [TS]

00:18:25   person shooter metaphor and I've enjoyed [TS]

00:18:27   playing shooters and yet you know is [TS]

00:18:29   I've gotten older I've gotten gotten it [TS]

00:18:31   just seems kind of old to me and portal [TS]

00:18:33   was that breath of fresh air of like oh [TS]

00:18:35   I can use these skills and have a good [TS]

00:18:37   time and yeah there's some peril and [TS]

00:18:39   there's something shooting at me but [TS]

00:18:40   it's not i'm just outwitting them in it [TS]

00:18:42   in it I really appreciate that's the [TS]

00:18:44   thing that made me play there are not [TS]

00:18:46   that many [TS]

00:18:46   games that I played you know all the way [TS]

00:18:49   through in the last 10 years and the [TS]

00:18:52   portal games were not hard to play all [TS]

00:18:54   the way thru like I really wanted to [TS]

00:18:56   play them all the way through i like how [TS]

00:18:58   in Portal to portal 2 you're constantly [TS]

00:19:00   berated for being a murderer even though [TS]

00:19:02   it's do a relatively nonviolent game [TS]

00:19:04   compared to show the number of murders [TS]

00:19:06   are committed many other that's right we [TS]

00:19:09   take a break to tell you about our [TS]

00:19:10   sponsor this week it is Casper you may [TS]

00:19:14   have heard of them before [TS]

00:19:15   Casper you know it's an internet [TS]

00:19:17   mattress and I say that you're thinking [TS]

00:19:19   internet mattress sounds like something [TS]

00:19:20   crazy but it's not it's actually really [TS]

00:19:22   awesome these our tech guys who got [TS]

00:19:25   together and tried to figure out a way [TS]

00:19:26   to take two amazing bed technologies [TS]

00:19:29   latex foam and memory foam and stick [TS]

00:19:32   them together and also make it as easy [TS]

00:19:33   to order a bed as anything else you [TS]

00:19:36   might get on the internet and that's [TS]

00:19:39   what they did [TS]

00:19:39   so these mattresses are made in America [TS]

00:19:41   they are obsessively engineered and they [TS]

00:19:45   have a shockingly fair price it's five [TS]

00:19:47   hundred dollars for a twin 954 a king if [TS]

00:19:50   you compare that to industry averages [TS]

00:19:52   for premium mattresses that is an [TS]

00:19:55   impressive price point [TS]

00:19:57   Casper will ship direct to your door it [TS]

00:19:59   comes in a box and then you open it up [TS]

00:20:01   and it expands once it gets out of the [TS]

00:20:04   box which is very cool and they've got a [TS]

00:20:06   risk-free trial and return policy you [TS]

00:20:08   could sleep on Casper for a hundred days [TS]

00:20:10   free delivery painless return if you [TS]

00:20:13   don't like it in the first hundred days [TS]

00:20:14   they will take it back for you [TS]

00:20:17   so there's really no risk here you need [TS]

00:20:19   to try it out [TS]

00:20:20   I've had a Casper in my house for the [TS]

00:20:23   last two months i have been sleeping on [TS]

00:20:25   it every night and you know what it [TS]

00:20:27   really is great i enjoy it a lot the [TS]

00:20:29   memory foam is there so what they say is [TS]

00:20:32   just the right sink just the right [TS]

00:20:34   balance and that's exactly right [TS]

00:20:35   it's super soft and nice on top but it's [TS]

00:20:37   supportive beneath that you were nice [TS]

00:20:40   when I sit on my bed I don't feel like [TS]

00:20:42   I'm sitting on the edge of a trampoline [TS]

00:20:43   like on my old mattress it's really [TS]

00:20:45   comfortable super nice my house [TS]

00:20:49   definitely was full of people who are [TS]

00:20:51   skeptical about mattresses from the [TS]

00:20:53   internet with the foam technologies come [TS]

00:20:56   up the there were thought by geniuses [TS]

00:20:57   with crazy texts ideas and [TS]

00:21:00   know what it's actually really great and [TS]

00:21:02   everybody is convinced down and I think [TS]

00:21:04   you might like it too [TS]

00:21:04   so check it out get fifty dollars off [TS]

00:21:07   toward any mattress purchase by visiting [TS]

00:21:09   www.castleconnolly.com Casper like the [TS]

00:21:20   you fifty dollars toward any mattress [TS]

00:21:22   purchase and thank you Casper for [TS]

00:21:24   sponsoring the uncomfortable and for [TS]

00:21:26   making the very pleasant mattress that i [TS]

00:21:28   sleep on every single night in [TS]

00:21:31   additionally what Briana say about how [TS]

00:21:32   it being this just wickedly brilliant [TS]

00:21:34   satire were her exact words since the [TS]

00:21:36   chatroom loves it [TS]

00:21:37   title sure but it just the way that even [TS]

00:21:40   in portable one to start the way the the [TS]

00:21:44   story came in to play and how everyone [TS]

00:21:47   say you guys are saying that it teaches [TS]

00:21:49   you how to play the game very well [TS]

00:21:51   without feeling like it's teaching you [TS]

00:21:53   how to play the game but it also kind of [TS]

00:21:54   brings in the story without you [TS]

00:21:56   realizing that there's a story coming [TS]

00:21:58   you know all of a sudden Gladys's you [TS]

00:22:01   know her you hear her voice you don't [TS]

00:22:03   know anything about her but she'll start [TS]

00:22:05   you know saying things about like oh [TS]

00:22:07   you're going to be missed you know and [TS]

00:22:09   you're like wait when it [TS]

00:22:10   what did you know you're like hold on a [TS]

00:22:12   second and then the music changes and it [TS]

00:22:15   starts you know feeling a little bit [TS]

00:22:16   ominous and you're like what am i [TS]

00:22:18   walking into here you know it's person [TS]

00:22:20   look you feel like it's just this puzzle [TS]

00:22:22   game you're playing this person and [TS]

00:22:23   you're walking through and i'm going to [TS]

00:22:24   solve some puzzles puzzles with this [TS]

00:22:26   cool gun but then it very very [TS]

00:22:29   seamlessly and and slowly becomes you [TS]

00:22:32   know this this intense thing that you [TS]

00:22:34   and then you start finding the dens and [TS]

00:22:36   you start seeing what's going on and she [TS]

00:22:38   starts talking to you in a weird way and [TS]

00:22:40   I just I find that so intriguing and [TS]

00:22:42   like you say it's so funny and the width [TS]

00:22:44   that they use and the language that you [TS]

00:22:46   use you just can't help but enjoy it and [TS]

00:22:49   keep going but also have a little bit of [TS]

00:22:51   fear which is great the way they tell [TS]

00:22:53   that story so brilliant because you know [TS]

00:22:56   you're talking about her voice and like [TS]

00:22:59   for the first part of the game if you [TS]

00:23:01   listen to the way that they edited [TS]

00:23:02   Gladys's voice they would have her like [TS]

00:23:05   read three lines and they would pull [TS]

00:23:06   individual words out of it and make it [TS]

00:23:08   sound very disjointed and [TS]

00:23:10   computer like and if you listen to that [TS]

00:23:13   effect as you go deeper and deeper into [TS]

00:23:15   the game they start rolling that back [TS]

00:23:18   and taking it away [TS]

00:23:19   so what you have like when like you're [TS]

00:23:21   talking about this sinister earnest like [TS]

00:23:23   start coming out then they would not do [TS]

00:23:26   that affected she'd be so it was lesson [TS]

00:23:29   to lesson to lesson so she becomes more [TS]

00:23:32   and more human now and more and more of [TS]

00:23:35   a villain until you get to like the [TS]

00:23:37   final level where she's doing actual [TS]

00:23:39   evil soliloquies towards you and it's [TS]

00:23:42   just so awesome I mean we all agree that [TS]

00:23:44   Gladys is one of the greatest villains [TS]

00:23:46   and a video game right it's such a great [TS]

00:23:48   character might get it yeah we already [TS]

00:23:50   saw the first two lines for my notes you [TS]

00:23:52   got the clever gameplay mechanic mix [TS]

00:23:54   with narrative which was my over [TS]

00:23:56   everything and then and then that my [TS]

00:23:57   very first note was the super robotic [TS]

00:23:59   voice in the beginning of portal one [TS]

00:24:00   that's slowly is where you really see it [TS]

00:24:02   if you go play portal what portal two [TS]

00:24:03   back-to-back because portal 2 she's all [TS]

00:24:05   smooth silky evil the whole time right [TS]

00:24:08   versus portal 1 [TS]

00:24:09   well then remember the Aperture Science [TS]

00:24:11   bring-your-daughter-to-work day is the [TS]

00:24:13   perfect time to have protested you know [TS]

00:24:15   it that the game portals is from was [TS]

00:24:18   basically like an idea for a gameplay [TS]

00:24:20   mechanic this poll portals mechanic and [TS]

00:24:22   you can make a game with just a mechanic [TS]

00:24:24   what makes it special is the head [TS]

00:24:25   mechanic lots of games have cool [TS]

00:24:27   mechanically you could say something [TS]

00:24:28   like Three's has I interesting [TS]

00:24:31   mechanically you know combine these [TS]

00:24:32   tiles and the slide is interesting way [TS]

00:24:34   that's a mechanic you can make a great [TS]

00:24:36   game like that but putting narrative on [TS]

00:24:37   top of it is you know it's like [TS]

00:24:39   chocolate and peanut butter combined [TS]

00:24:41   here and it's not like if you just have [TS]

00:24:43   a narrative you have been a bad game [TS]

00:24:45   it's not like you just have a great game [TS]

00:24:46   blipping how to get back and make great [TS]

00:24:48   games either way but portable such an [TS]

00:24:49   oddity because it was like look you know [TS]

00:24:51   it's it was made by a few people with a [TS]

00:24:53   small you know tie-in type game it's [TS]

00:24:56   never going to be this grand narrative [TS]

00:24:58   like like a big huge triple a narrative [TS]

00:25:00   game and it's never the gameplay [TS]

00:25:01   mechanic was like yeah alright i guess [TS]

00:25:03   it's kind of interesting but the [TS]

00:25:04   combination of the two is way more than [TS]

00:25:06   the sum of the parts land I i think i [TS]

00:25:08   think also what kind of game it is plays [TS]

00:25:10   into it brilliantly in that the way the [TS]

00:25:12   way it starts you know you you almost [TS]

00:25:14   expect it's like oh I get it [TS]

00:25:16   they've got a clever mechanic and they [TS]

00:25:17   have a series of puzzles and it's [TS]

00:25:19   literally going to be I mean and you [TS]

00:25:20   were led to believe that's what [TS]

00:25:21   everybody thought is I'm gonna leave [TS]

00:25:23   in part of all this is one of 16 right [TS]

00:25:26   no yeah I guess we're just gonna do some [TS]

00:25:28   things and then you get to that moment [TS]

00:25:30   where it all falls apart and you flee [TS]

00:25:31   and you're going down the side the [TS]

00:25:33   passageways outside the things that is [TS]

00:25:35   such that is one of my favorite moments [TS]

00:25:37   in any game I've ever played because [TS]

00:25:39   you're like what is happening now how it [TS]

00:25:41   out you know i'm going to want you to [TS]

00:25:42   feel that fleeing a general adrenaline [TS]

00:25:44   yeah it's really like my god i really do [TS]

00:25:47   have to get out of here like I have no [TS]

00:25:48   usage and even at that point you you [TS]

00:25:50   know that she's probably going to kill [TS]

00:25:51   you at that point like this the great [TS]

00:25:53   thing about you know sort of the the [TS]

00:25:55   mute protagonist and half life on this [TS]

00:25:57   game as well by time you get up to [TS]

00:25:59   whatever that level is when the the fire [TS]

00:26:00   is there and everything and they're [TS]

00:26:02   going to incinerate you I you're so mad [TS]

00:26:05   Gladys but she's just been needling you [TS]

00:26:07   and the only the only way you have to [TS]

00:26:10   take revenge on this voice that's been [TS]

00:26:12   in your ear that you're pretty sure now [TS]

00:26:14   wants you dead is through your actions [TS]

00:26:16   in the game because you can't yell back [TS]

00:26:17   and there's no like there's no [TS]

00:26:19   interaction is no dialogue [TS]

00:26:21   it's like you you feel like you're in [TS]

00:26:23   this conflict with what is essentially a [TS]

00:26:24   voiceover like again it's a small game [TS]

00:26:26   and economical way to do it is just make [TS]

00:26:28   the game with the mechanic and just a [TS]

00:26:30   voiceover like what do you mean just [TS]

00:26:31   added that it is that your whole [TS]

00:26:33   narrative is just going to be voiceover [TS]

00:26:34   how taking and pull it off it's it's [TS]

00:26:35   very economical and the trick is have [TS]

00:26:38   really really good writing and really [TS]

00:26:40   really good voice acting and then all of [TS]

00:26:41   a sudden this entire world and star [TS]

00:26:43   conflict in your head with what is [TS]

00:26:44   essentially a voice happening while you [TS]

00:26:46   play puzzles like her voice she doesn't [TS]

00:26:48   even affect the game just dropped you in [TS]

00:26:49   and then you mean you play out each room [TS]

00:26:51   and you know talk to you in the elevator [TS]

00:26:52   right and you know but during the [TS]

00:26:54   loading screen results you in the [TS]

00:26:55   elevator and out of that doesn't like [TS]

00:26:58   reading it's like reading a book this [TS]

00:26:59   entire world has spun out in your mind [TS]

00:27:01   like the entire game is taking place in [TS]

00:27:03   your mind while like your hands are [TS]

00:27:04   solving a puzzle just like I'm gonna get [TS]

00:27:06   her whenever you know checking your like [TS]

00:27:08   escape haha free you know [TS]

00:27:10   yeah I usually find games with the [TS]

00:27:11   silent protagonist like kind of [TS]

00:27:13   frustrating and feel like it's kind of [TS]

00:27:14   from a certain area of video games but [TS]

00:27:16   it works so well in this I mean it to me [TS]

00:27:19   it's weird and half life when you go [TS]

00:27:20   places they're like scientists talking [TS]

00:27:22   to you and you just sit there and don't [TS]

00:27:24   respond [TS]

00:27:24   um but it works really well in portal [TS]

00:27:27   with with with glasses the main [TS]

00:27:29   character with the other characters that [TS]

00:27:30   they added portal 2 and it's all women [TS]

00:27:32   that's true that [TS]

00:27:35   don't even talk about like [TS]

00:27:37   bring-your-daughter-to-work day [TS]

00:27:37   self-esteem fun for girls clad is said [TS]

00:27:41   in the beginning of portal 1 like how do [TS]

00:27:43   you show who the character is the first [TS]

00:27:45   person shooter and the very first as [TS]

00:27:47   soon as you wake up in portal one you [TS]

00:27:49   are forced to see your player character [TS]

00:27:51   which almost never happens in any other [TS]

00:27:52   game unless you shove a mirror in the [TS]

00:27:54   face because going through the portal [TS]

00:27:56   you see yourself entering you know to me [TS]

00:27:58   like it's it's a clever way to without [TS]

00:28:01   without putting a mirror right in front [TS]

00:28:02   of you or without having like a readout [TS]

00:28:03   over the screen saying who you are [TS]

00:28:05   whatever it's totally clear that you are [TS]

00:28:08   this woman and for the rest of the game [TS]

00:28:10   you'll be seeing yourself going through [TS]

00:28:11   portals you know I wanted to say one [TS]

00:28:13   thing about the silence which is just [TS]

00:28:15   you can read it as being I'm not gonna [TS]

00:28:18   I'm not gonna feed the trolls right I'm [TS]

00:28:21   not going to give Gladys the [TS]

00:28:22   satisfaction of talking to her I'm just [TS]

00:28:25   gonna ignore and roll my eyes and she's [TS]

00:28:27   just she can hold the whole conversation [TS]

00:28:29   by herself [TS]

00:28:29   I don't need to participate instead of [TS]

00:28:31   it being that why am i i'm not saying [TS]

00:28:33   anything and they can't even then poke [TS]

00:28:35   fun at it and portal 2 window when they [TS]

00:28:38   ask you to say stuff and you you hit a [TS]

00:28:39   button that makes you jump in it [TS]

00:28:41   yeah maybe you have brain damage or [TS]

00:28:43   maybe you don't want to talk to any of [TS]

00:28:44   these annoying robot think she calls you [TS]

00:28:46   a mutant monster at some point later [TS]

00:28:48   later and then I think some kind of some [TS]

00:28:51   kind of crazy mute or whatever but and [TS]

00:28:53   then you showed up you dangerous [TS]

00:28:56   mute lunatic yeah like you're playing [TS]

00:29:00   the entire game and you're all your [TS]

00:29:02   actions are your only revenge and even [TS]

00:29:04   though everything like you know how it [TS]

00:29:05   works is the game like when you get [TS]

00:29:07   through a certain sequence certain audio [TS]

00:29:08   is triggered but it seems like [TS]

00:29:10   especially because the amount of time [TS]

00:29:12   you spend solving a puzzle is variable [TS]

00:29:13   depending on whether you get stuck or [TS]

00:29:15   not [TS]

00:29:15   and very often you'll spend a long [TS]

00:29:17   period of time without hearing anything [TS]

00:29:18   say because you don't trigger any other [TS]

00:29:20   events like putting a portal behind the [TS]

00:29:22   security cameras and hearing the little [TS]

00:29:23   voice tell you have to do that or [TS]

00:29:24   whatever you struggle to a puzzle and in [TS]

00:29:27   your moment of triumph immediately her [TS]

00:29:28   voice comes in and cut you down again [TS]

00:29:29   and then you just hate her even more [TS]

00:29:31   it'll calm even her just parading you [TS]

00:29:33   when you're in the elevators is kind of [TS]

00:29:35   its like that's a really nice take on [TS]

00:29:37   like where this is here so we can have a [TS]

00:29:38   loading screen right but we're going to [TS]

00:29:40   you know we're going to amuse you [TS]

00:29:41   well you know between puzzles so I I [TS]

00:29:44   have to say I've heard [TS]

00:29:46   a criticism I hear a lot from people are [TS]

00:29:48   people that they don't like games that [TS]

00:29:52   basically plays movies like they hate [TS]

00:29:54   metal gear for instance because they [TS]

00:29:56   they don't watch a story they want to [TS]

00:29:59   play a story and they're they're really [TS]

00:30:00   big fans of like the first person like [TS]

00:30:05   you exist in this world and you just see [TS]

00:30:06   it and story happens around you i [TS]

00:30:08   usually don't like that i think in [TS]

00:30:11   Portal I think that this game could not [TS]

00:30:14   have worked if you had heard shell [TS]

00:30:16   talking in the reason i think that is it [TS]

00:30:19   Jason coming back to your comment about [TS]

00:30:20   like you know how you felt when the [TS]

00:30:23   world started you know like Gladys tries [TS]

00:30:25   to kill you and you leap out the [TS]

00:30:26   incinerator and like you've broken the [TS]

00:30:28   fourth wall and suddenly you're behind [TS]

00:30:30   the the scenes of aperture science and [TS]

00:30:33   yeah you're seeing all these mechanics [TS]

00:30:35   and like that just broken down scaffold [TS]

00:30:38   tree and going from room to room and [TS]

00:30:39   that experience is so much about what [TS]

00:30:42   you the player are feeling and like do [TS]

00:30:47   you remember when you incinerate your [TS]

00:30:48   companion cube that was freakin horrible [TS]

00:30:51   that her you kill your faithful [TS]

00:30:53   companion cube and then they they twist [TS]

00:30:56   the knife by saying you were the races [TS]

00:30:57   her time you use a nice your face little [TS]

00:31:00   companion cube by quickly than any test [TS]

00:31:03   subject on record [TS]

00:31:04   congratulations you do they always say [TS]

00:31:06   that no matter what you know pretty sure [TS]

00:31:07   yeah but from the me if it was so much [TS]

00:31:10   about what you yourself felt from that [TS]

00:31:14   like maybe you're a monster and you felt [TS]

00:31:16   nothing [TS]

00:31:17   considering your companion cube and I [TS]

00:31:19   think if you had like shells speaking [TS]

00:31:22   right throughout the whole game i think [TS]

00:31:23   it would just be here exactly because [TS]

00:31:26   the Wonder portal is exploring and [TS]

00:31:29   figuring it out in your own thoughts in [TS]

00:31:31   your own journey in your head is the [TS]

00:31:33   reward of portal so I think this is like [TS]

00:31:36   the rare edge case like it's really true [TS]

00:31:38   this this criticism please and I don't [TS]

00:31:41   think there are any cutscenes and portal [TS]

00:31:42   1 like with the exception of maybe the [TS]

00:31:44   very ending of the game like it there [TS]

00:31:46   are loading screens in which you are you [TS]

00:31:47   know elevator and entertained by voices [TS]

00:31:49   but you make everything happen and so it [TS]

00:31:51   is a right is a conversation between [TS]

00:31:53   voiceover audio and your actions that is [TS]

00:31:56   the conversation obviously your actions [TS]

00:31:58   always gonna be the same [TS]

00:31:59   always going to complete his room and go [TS]

00:32:00   to the next room and get it feels like a [TS]

00:32:01   conversation even though you are [TS]

00:32:03   essentially being led through a linear [TS]

00:32:04   thing of cards and triggering a linear [TS]

00:32:07   series of events that's what good [TS]

00:32:08   writing can do can make you forget like [TS]

00:32:10   a book like the book's gonna unfold the [TS]

00:32:11   way it's going to unfold but you feel [TS]

00:32:12   like it's a living breathing thing when [TS]

00:32:14   you're reading because whatever you've [TS]

00:32:15   got in your head as the platform is like [TS]

00:32:18   going out over that fire and then you're [TS]

00:32:19   running through the back hallways like [TS]

00:32:20   whatever you have in your head is gonna [TS]

00:32:21   be a lot more meaningful than like a [TS]

00:32:23   voice actor saying like I gotta get out [TS]

00:32:25   of here right i mean that no yeah and [TS]

00:32:27   then we've got right to the music use [TS]

00:32:29   that they have you are really really [TS]

00:32:30   good really led to everything in the [TS]

00:32:32   game for free in addition to the hell i [TS]

00:32:34   love it just a little radio plain [TS]

00:32:36   annoying on [TS]

00:32:37   oh yeah I do [TS]

00:32:47   i also like somebody who tends to not do [TS]

00:32:50   the obsessive exploring of every single [TS]

00:32:53   crevice of every single 3d area of a [TS]

00:32:57   game I like that in Portal the original [TS]

00:33:01   when you go behind-the-scenes I felt [TS]

00:33:03   really motivated to do that partially [TS]

00:33:06   because the game was leaving me there [TS]

00:33:07   but also partially because of the story [TS]

00:33:09   the story made me feel like as Chelle I [TS]

00:33:12   need to figure out what the hell is [TS]

00:33:13   going on here and then you get rewarded [TS]

00:33:15   by the scenes scrawled things on the [TS]

00:33:17   walls and stuff like that but I liked [TS]

00:33:20   how it made me feel like oh well of [TS]

00:33:22   course I need to do this thing that you [TS]

00:33:24   know most gamers would probably be doing [TS]

00:33:25   anyway which is trying to figure out [TS]

00:33:27   what's going on by looking down all [TS]

00:33:29   these weird different locations behind [TS]

00:33:31   the scenes in this game and they put [TS]

00:33:33   arrows on the wall to like as I organic [TS]

00:33:36   way to integrate like this is applied a [TS]

00:33:38   place where some people might get stuck [TS]

00:33:39   so you've been seeing how long on the [TS]

00:33:41   wall already anyway so if we put a [TS]

00:33:43   scroll Darrow it there's a gameplay [TS]

00:33:45   reason for there to be essentially hint [TS]

00:33:47   in the game reminding people who might [TS]

00:33:49   not be sure [TS]

00:33:50   oh by the way you should go this way [TS]

00:33:51   because there are places in the game [TS]

00:33:52   especially when you're going through the [TS]

00:33:53   mechanicals where again if you're if [TS]

00:33:55   you're level first-person shooter [TS]

00:33:57   awareness is not good you could get [TS]

00:33:58   yourself turned around I quite [TS]

00:34:00   understand especially since uh since the [TS]

00:34:01   Gladys is going you're not even going [TS]

00:34:03   the right way like all the time [TS]

00:34:05   yeah i can imagine people believing that [TS]

00:34:06   began to get lost in that type of thing [TS]

00:34:08   and you've got the you know the arrows [TS]

00:34:10   pointing you towards the to continue the [TS]

00:34:12   game i want to talk about some of the [TS]

00:34:15   other characters in the game and this [TS]

00:34:18   may not be what you expect me to say but [TS]

00:34:20   I maybe we can talk about the turrets [TS]

00:34:22   yeah because they are just won the [TS]

00:34:25   Turner care gasps I don't hate you can [TS]

00:34:28   keep and I'm delightful because they [TS]

00:34:31   talk and they say very strange things [TS]

00:34:33   and when you when you are going to shoot [TS]

00:34:35   you so you have to do bad things to them [TS]

00:34:36   and then it's very sad because they yelp [TS]

00:34:39   and they say sad things facebook weekend [TS]

00:34:41   I love that I love that the turrets and [TS]

00:34:44   they look you know interesting and [TS]

00:34:47   almost you know like a more like a [TS]

00:34:49   person than a or or a person robot I [TS]

00:34:53   love coming across that the special ones [TS]

00:34:55   and especially in portal to where they [TS]

00:34:56   have like the end the ones in the den [TS]

00:34:58   that sing the little song here he did [TS]

00:35:01   you come across that one [TS]

00:35:06   the background you hear this music and [TS]

00:35:19   you're like what is that and you like go [TS]

00:35:20   through and you find one of the rat dens [TS]

00:35:22   and you're in there and then all of a [TS]

00:35:23   sudden you find this area where there's [TS]

00:35:25   three or four of them just singing a [TS]

00:35:27   little song to themselves like in this [TS]

00:35:29   little warehouse and it's adorable and [TS]

00:35:31   then the one that you find on the [TS]

00:35:32   platform right that like tells you all [TS]

00:35:34   kinds of a life-affirming slightly [TS]

00:35:37   religious jargon because you saved it [TS]

00:35:40   from being incinerated you Robin you [TS]

00:35:42   don't talking about I do from looking [TS]

00:35:44   screaming vocals for keeping the merge [TS]

00:35:47   to me he was cast into the balance of [TS]

00:35:50   here and pick things that affected the [TS]

00:35:53   defective ones are add more than the [TS]

00:35:55   regular one yeah it's like I different [TS]

00:35:57   save me o beautiful one I feel really [TS]

00:36:02   bad for the Franken the Franken cubes [TS]

00:36:03   that are the turrets the get go to [TS]

00:36:05   solution and they're all messed up and [TS]

00:36:07   like it's got to stick their little legs [TS]

00:36:10   i try to square the trial on the ground [TS]

00:36:12   until you can almost they tuck their [TS]

00:36:13   legs and the cubes the robot that turns [TS]

00:36:16   the turn into cubes horrible idea [TS]

00:36:18   it's a phone oh right right off the bat [TS]

00:36:20   and on the very first the very first [TS]

00:36:22   level of portal one they try to give the [TS]

00:36:24   giant whatever the Aperture Science [TS]

00:36:26   whatever giant red button they try to [TS]

00:36:28   give that like a personality which [TS]

00:36:30   obviously the buttons don't have a [TS]

00:36:31   person I by giving by giving ridiculous [TS]

00:36:33   aperture science names each one of these [TS]

00:36:35   things you start to get a picture what [TS]

00:36:36   this company is like they're not just [TS]

00:36:38   about shower curtains anymore they do [TS]

00:36:40   all sorts of things science so you have [TS]

00:36:43   the original script portal 2 was going [TS]

00:36:46   to have you and rich it ends up being [TS]

00:36:49   very much Wheatley whatley how to [TS]

00:36:51   pronounce weaving really yeah weekly so [TS]

00:36:54   it was like you spend a lifetime with [TS]

00:36:56   weekly but the original version of it [TS]

00:36:58   was going to have different levels with [TS]

00:37:00   like the the space fear and the radius [TS]

00:37:03   fear was the third one [TS]

00:37:05   I'm [TS]

00:37:05   montresor learning adventures fear [TS]

00:37:07   adventures fear for food courts here or [TS]

00:37:11   is it adventure two or more facts fear [TS]

00:37:14   the spac the facts fear yes shredded [TS]

00:37:17   carrots don't like the situation in [TS]

00:37:19   which a cat in a box must be considered [TS]

00:37:20   for all intents and purposes [TS]

00:37:21   simultaneously alive and in short entry [TS]

00:37:24   created this counts as a justification [TS]

00:37:25   for killing cats [TS]

00:37:26   yeah oh my god i wish i did just had so [TS]

00:37:30   much personality like especially the [TS]

00:37:32   space fear so I want i will whole [TS]

00:37:34   spin-off game with Justin spear oh this [TS]

00:37:38   is base means be made minute we need it [TS]

00:37:41   but I like the adventure one because he [TS]

00:37:43   was a nice [TS]

00:37:44   he was a nice match for cave johnson [TS]

00:37:46   came down so we got longer be the [TS]

00:37:47   adventure core do you hear that make [TS]

00:37:50   something just exploded [TS]

00:37:51   man we are in a lot of danger this is [TS]

00:37:53   like Christmas [TS]

00:37:54   no it's better than Christmas should be [TS]

00:37:56   its own holiday explosion all right [TS]

00:38:00   let's talk about let's talk my cave [TS]

00:38:02   johnson and another in the fifties worry [TS]

00:38:05   we're getting a portal to hear but it's [TS]

00:38:06   all kind of gets all goes together man I [TS]

00:38:10   i loved i love that whole section of the [TS]

00:38:12   game and we can talk about that too how [TS]

00:38:13   we we start portal 2 and it's pretty [TS]

00:38:16   familiar [TS]

00:38:17   although we've got wheelie as our [TS]

00:38:18   companion and then we've got at the end [TS]

00:38:20   it's pretty familiar although its kind [TS]

00:38:21   of skewed and and it's undercutting sort [TS]

00:38:23   of what we expect but it also is what we [TS]

00:38:25   expect portal and they did that great [TS]

00:38:27   thing of building that familiarity by [TS]

00:38:28   having you play the first couple [TS]

00:38:30   Taylor's from portal again except now [TS]

00:38:32   they're all your message i did an [TS]

00:38:33   overgrown and probably they do like [TS]

00:38:35   three flips because you start the game [TS]

00:38:36   and you're like wow okay because glass [TS]

00:38:39   in this game or not because i got this [TS]

00:38:40   court thing and hit the you know [TS]

00:38:42   Wheatley is has enough personality can [TS]

00:38:44   be like I wouldn't be offended by [TS]

00:38:46   playing a game with we have here is my [TS]

00:38:48   domain because he's charismatic in a [TS]

00:38:49   different way we are none of that's 192 [TS]

00:38:52   twist of like all glad she's still here [TS]

00:38:53   big surprise but anyway she is that's [TS]

00:38:55   number two and number three is all you [TS]

00:38:58   thought you were it was going to be [TS]

00:38:59   another game where you just you versus [TS]

00:39:00   glass actually this whole thing you know [TS]

00:39:02   and then you fall down the big shaft and [TS]

00:39:04   then there's the cave johnson and it all [TS]

00:39:05   comes together so they they they kind of [TS]

00:39:07   do it [TS]

00:39:08   I don't say do it too many times but [TS]

00:39:10   they do I think just enough twists where [TS]

00:39:12   it's kind of like two three or four [TS]

00:39:14   games in one and each one gives you a [TS]

00:39:16   different look just when you think [TS]

00:39:17   you're getting a little bit tired [TS]

00:39:18   alright so I'm just gonna go through a [TS]

00:39:19   series of levels Julio Gladys back or [TS]

00:39:21   item I just going to go through a series [TS]

00:39:22   of levels are no actually I'm not and [TS]

00:39:24   that cave johnson has its own [TS]

00:39:26   progression and then it all comes [TS]

00:39:27   together in the end it so it's a [TS]

00:39:28   surprisingly rich structure for what is [TS]

00:39:31   not very long games only long compared [TS]

00:39:33   to portal 2 but you can get through to [TS]

00:39:35   get part of one rather they find a lot [TS]

00:39:37   of ways to reinvent that formula right i [TS]

00:39:40   love that I love the cave johnson [TS]

00:39:41   section for lots of reasons I love that [TS]

00:39:43   it's such a change in terms of the [TS]

00:39:45   palette and the and the set design and [TS]

00:39:47   everything and we've got and and the the [TS]

00:39:49   cut the loading screens change so that [TS]

00:39:52   you know you end up with the history of [TS]

00:39:54   logos of aperture science through [TS]

00:39:56   history through the decades which is [TS]

00:39:58   fantastic got seventies aperture science [TS]

00:40:00   logo is a thing of beauty and horror but [TS]

00:40:03   beauty and then we get the story cave [TS]

00:40:06   johnson played wonderfully by JK Simmons [TS]

00:40:09   and I really enjoy hearing his and [TS]

00:40:12   stretch it strains credulity a little [TS]

00:40:13   bit that it's like guess we'll take this [TS]

00:40:15   recording when he will occasionally have [TS]

00:40:16   a side and mark them at people [TS]

00:40:18   we'll just load that one in that part [TS]

00:40:19   we're not going to edit it or anything [TS]

00:40:21   you're not part of the control group by [TS]

00:40:23   the way you get the jail last four [TS]

00:40:25   son-of-a-gun got blue paint all joking [TS]

00:40:28   aside that did happen broke every bone [TS]

00:40:30   in his legs tragic but informative or so [TS]

00:40:33   I'm told [TS]

00:40:34   the lab boys just informed me that I [TS]

00:40:36   should not have mentioned the control [TS]

00:40:37   group they're telling me I gotta stop [TS]

00:40:39   making these pre-recorded messages that [TS]

00:40:41   gave me an idea make more pre-recorded [TS]

00:40:43   messages I pay the bills or i can talk [TS]

00:40:45   about the control group all damn day but [TS]

00:40:47   still it's it's telling his story and [TS]

00:40:49   it's also giving you that kind of [TS]

00:40:50   amusing like Oh apertures been around [TS]

00:40:52   for awhile how did it get started what [TS]

00:40:54   you know why is it the way it is now and [TS]

00:40:56   while you're going through the kind of [TS]

00:40:58   decrepit you know the underbelly of what [TS]

00:41:01   was aperture back at the beginning and I [TS]

00:41:03   just I love that section JK Simmons is a [TS]

00:41:06   riot and I was really happy the entire [TS]

00:41:09   time I was playing in their third like [TS]

00:41:11   the retro portal section is a just was [TS]

00:41:13   really enjoyable as my favorite part of [TS]

00:41:15   the game every packs i go to i hope i [TS]

00:41:18   can find like some exploding lemons to [TS]

00:41:20   behind and keep their my desk like that [TS]

00:41:23   would be awesome [TS]

00:41:24   alright I've been thinking when life [TS]

00:41:26   gives you lemons you make lemonade make [TS]

00:41:29   life take the [TS]

00:41:30   image back get mad I want your damn [TS]

00:41:33   lemons what am I supposed to do with [TS]

00:41:35   these demands to see life's manager make [TS]

00:41:38   life through the day and thought it [TS]

00:41:40   could give came Johnson lemons do you [TS]

00:41:42   know who i am i'm the man is gonna burn [TS]

00:41:46   your house down with the lemons [TS]

00:41:48   I'm gonna get my engineers to invent a [TS]

00:41:50   combustible lemon that burns your house [TS]

00:41:53   down [TS]

00:41:55   we're like we're like have my people GS [TS]

00:41:58   accident throw throw 11 ZAPPIN just to [TS]

00:42:01   just to psych the know now that the [TS]

00:42:03   whole monologue was great and finding [TS]

00:42:04   out plateaus his backstory and it [TS]

00:42:06   doesn't let us say explicitly who she is [TS]

00:42:09   but it sure doesn't into it but it [TS]

00:42:11   doesn't the very at the very end it does [TS]

00:42:13   because at the very end [TS]

00:42:15   she says that uh Carolyn has made me so [TS]

00:42:19   for those who had just I don't know why [TS]

00:42:22   they're listening if they haven't played [TS]

00:42:23   the game but but but [TS]

00:42:25   k Johnson's assistant who he says in the [TS]

00:42:28   end he's like she needs to run the [TS]

00:42:29   company and you should put her in the [TS]

00:42:31   computer instead of me if I die before [TS]

00:42:33   you can put me in the computer [TS]

00:42:35   Carol Carolyn Carolyn Caroline at the [TS]

00:42:38   end GLaDOS says you know being Carolyn [TS]

00:42:42   taught me a valuable lesson [TS]

00:42:44   I thought you were my greatest enemy [TS]

00:42:45   when all along you were my best friend [TS]

00:42:49   the surge of emotion shot through me [TS]

00:42:51   when I see if your life taught me and [TS]

00:42:53   even more valuable lesson where Carolyn [TS]

00:42:56   lives in my brain [TS]

00:42:58   goodbye Carolyn [TS]

00:43:00   that's a that's a nice moment and then [TS]

00:43:03   of course in the song in a once you're [TS]

00:43:05   gone it says that too so she's she's [TS]

00:43:07   always Carolyn is always a there but it [TS]

00:43:09   takes awhile for to dawn on you of [TS]

00:43:12   what's of what's happening i think i [TS]

00:43:14   mean you can read ahead maybe a little [TS]

00:43:15   bit and figure it out but that's a [TS]

00:43:16   really nice thing to as he's dying from [TS]

00:43:19   moon dust poisoning i thought it was [TS]

00:43:22   nice that the net the narrative that [TS]

00:43:24   takes place in Portal 2 with a review [TS]

00:43:25   all these things like it was one of the [TS]

00:43:27   few games where I didn't have to after [TS]

00:43:29   completing portal to go to a site and [TS]

00:43:30   look up like what you know to what [TS]

00:43:32   happened to look up and look up what the [TS]

00:43:34   real story because there was i was [TS]

00:43:36   interested enough in the game to like [TS]

00:43:38   look at every little thing is not too [TS]

00:43:39   many things to look at right so you see [TS]

00:43:40   the science fair you see the potato you [TS]

00:43:43   see the names and stuff like that and [TS]

00:43:44   just through sort of the emotional arc [TS]

00:43:47   or not so much the like the little [TS]

00:43:49   little hints they give you but just the [TS]

00:43:51   emotional are being made it very clear [TS]

00:43:52   to me what the relationship between [TS]

00:43:53   Caroline GLaDOS and she'll was at least [TS]

00:43:56   as far as I was concerned and then I was [TS]

00:43:58   just looking up to see if the end the [TS]

00:44:00   actual evidence on the wiki pages and [TS]

00:44:02   all the fan sites confirmed what I would [TS]

00:44:04   I in my heart believe to be true with a [TS]

00:44:06   connection between them and neither did [TS]

00:44:08   didn't it either agree with it or the [TS]

00:44:10   very least didn't disapprove it so I [TS]

00:44:12   definitely have my headcanon for this [TS]

00:44:13   game and I think that cameras probably [TS]

00:44:14   pretty coat close to what the real [TS]

00:44:16   Canada's you know I just like i like the [TS]

00:44:18   realization and and the best part of it [TS]

00:44:20   is that i love that that all happens [TS]

00:44:22   while GLaDOS is with you stuck to a [TS]

00:44:25   potato field because she's like not [TS]

00:44:28   unite oh my god i figured out the origin [TS]

00:44:30   of GLaDOS it's like no she's right there [TS]

00:44:32   going like home that sounds familiar [TS]

00:44:34   I don't know and that adds a whole other [TS]

00:44:36   layer to it that she the potato Gladys's [TS]

00:44:39   is you know stuck on your on your portal [TS]

00:44:42   gun while you're learning her origin [TS]

00:44:44   story that's and it's retroactive [TS]

00:44:46   continuity like the line i said at the [TS]

00:44:48   opening of the show I chose it because [TS]

00:44:49   that's a line from portal one but it [TS]

00:44:51   makes it clear as far back at portal one [TS]

00:44:53   that there is an emotional relationship [TS]

00:44:55   between Chell and GLaDOS which doesn't [TS]

00:44:58   make sense in the context of the part of [TS]

00:44:59   one universe because you don't have any [TS]

00:45:00   of the backstory but once we heard it [TS]

00:45:02   important to sort of in in perhaps you [TS]

00:45:05   know fun coincidental retroactive [TS]

00:45:07   continuity you're like oh that the stuff [TS]

00:45:09   she said in part 1 Tony's makes sense [TS]

00:45:11   because why would [TS]

00:45:12   why would shall be breaking glados's [TS]

00:45:14   heart by defeating her like there's [TS]

00:45:16   obviously a relationship between these [TS]

00:45:18   two personalities or entities and by the [TS]

00:45:21   end of portal 2 there is you know [TS]

00:45:22   there's a present relationship in the [TS]

00:45:23   past relationship is revealed and it all [TS]

00:45:25   starts to make sense and you know the [TS]

00:45:27   beautiful ending of portal 2 that will [TS]

00:45:28   get to just sort of nails at all home & [TS]

00:45:31   wraps the series thus far up into a nice [TS]

00:45:34   little bow have you did you see the did [TS]

00:45:37   anyone find the secret [TS]

00:45:38   portrait of a cave and Carolyn together [TS]

00:45:43   I don't know where that is i had i [TS]

00:45:44   hadn't come across that I knew about it [TS]

00:45:46   from reading about the game but not i [TS]

00:45:49   didn't find it in real life so it turns [TS]

00:45:51   out of the UFC there's like one of the [TS]

00:45:53   giant rooms there's a place where you [TS]

00:45:54   can pull up to it there's just like this [TS]

00:45:56   little side office with their and you [TS]

00:45:57   get a little bit of extra dialogue from [TS]

00:45:59   from Gladys when you're in there about [TS]

00:46:01   like this being more and more familiar [TS]

00:46:03   and I don't think it's a coincidence of [TS]

00:46:04   what a karen looks like so yeah yeah I [TS]

00:46:07   think you hop on a on a on a box and [TS]

00:46:10   there's like a door that you can you can [TS]

00:46:12   open from up on a box or something but [TS]

00:46:14   because i did see that there's more [TS]

00:46:16   dialogue there [TS]

00:46:16   I like also kind of all the little jokes [TS]

00:46:18   along the way about I mean after having [TS]

00:46:20   played all the half-life games with with [TS]

00:46:21   you know spending how many hours [TS]

00:46:23   exploring all the like a sprawling Black [TS]

00:46:26   Mesa kind of bland corporate complexes [TS]

00:46:28   it slick but all the like repeated [TS]

00:46:30   little jokes about how aperture sciences [TS]

00:46:32   you know basically black mesas you know [TS]

00:46:34   little runner-up secondly one out of [TS]

00:46:36   Mike yet on the slides in the games room [TS]

00:46:38   like how do you know him with black mesa [TS]

00:46:40   yep that's all their other plaques and [TS]

00:46:42   you know and they're just it's they have [TS]

00:46:44   so much more character to them compared [TS]

00:46:46   to you know and some of that is the [TS]

00:46:47   technology that was available in terms [TS]

00:46:48   of their level design but you know [TS]

00:46:50   aperture science click more fun place to [TS]

00:46:52   work for ya if you read the backstory [TS]

00:46:54   that is on the wiki pages and perhaps [TS]

00:46:55   not as well expressing the game the idea [TS]

00:46:57   was like they're they had heard about [TS]

00:46:59   something that black mesa was making [TS]

00:47:01   they said I forget what it was like [TS]

00:47:03   drainage ditches or do something to eat [TS]

00:47:06   grains they said we should make one like [TS]

00:47:08   that but also give it AI and that was [TS]

00:47:11   needed a class project was like we could [TS]

00:47:13   take something that it should never have [TS]

00:47:15   artificial intelligence can we also make [TS]

00:47:16   artificial intelligence that we should [TS]

00:47:18   remember ordered us some of the chatroom [TS]

00:47:19   should look it up but it like the [TS]

00:47:21   absurdity of the idea like that the way [TS]

00:47:23   we compete is to do these crazy things [TS]

00:47:25   fits perfect [TS]

00:47:26   with Kay Johnson once you once you meet [TS]

00:47:27   the man through his recordings that yes [TS]

00:47:29   that is essentially what they would do [TS]

00:47:30   and it is really terrible idea as [TS]

00:47:33   everyone would find out once the [TS]

00:47:34   neurotoxin started flowing I want to [TS]

00:47:36   talk about Wheatley briefly just to give [TS]

00:47:38   people in all yeah I so I have loved my [TS]

00:47:42   first podcast that i have really love [TS]

00:47:43   with the Ricky Gervais show and one of [TS]

00:47:45   the things that I really love about [TS]

00:47:46   everybody talks karl Pilkington was kind [TS]

00:47:48   of a breakout character being himself [TS]

00:47:49   very strange person I always loved [TS]

00:47:52   Stephen Merchant in the region based [TS]

00:47:54   show because what I loved about him was [TS]

00:47:56   he didn't talk a lot but whenever he [TS]

00:47:58   would say something it was just insane [TS]

00:48:00   and insanely funny and I just I always [TS]

00:48:02   liked I always enjoyed Stephen Merchant [TS]

00:48:05   so to have him be a character and having [TS]

00:48:07   me this bumbling helpful but not very [TS]

00:48:10   helpful turned you know turn to the [TS]

00:48:12   villain of the story for awhile bumbling [TS]

00:48:15   still but villain [TS]

00:48:17   i I just I that infused so much humor [TS]

00:48:20   into into the whole story and I just I [TS]

00:48:23   thought it was a great bit of casting [TS]

00:48:24   and when we were talking a couple [TS]

00:48:27   episodes ago I think we mentioned I i [TS]

00:48:30   think it was maybe even the last episode [TS]

00:48:31   we mentioned destiny and that wizard [TS]

00:48:35   came from the moon and things like that [TS]

00:48:36   i just i want to appreciate a really [TS]

00:48:38   nice bit of casting that having stephen [TS]

00:48:40   merchant is weakly I really enjoyed him [TS]

00:48:42   alway always one hour then I'll come [TS]

00:48:44   back and assuming like to locate your [TS]

00:48:46   dead body for burial [TS]

00:48:48   alright brilliant go team see you in an [TS]

00:48:52   hour hopefully if you're not dead [TS]

00:48:55   I thought he was really into playing and [TS]

00:48:58   I hate him he is intentionally annoying [TS]

00:49:01   right i found out of sight right but but [TS]

00:49:04   but then you see him breaking down but [TS]

00:49:06   he's entertaining don't you think [TS]

00:49:08   oh yeah I thought I guess what I'm [TS]

00:49:10   saying is my my gut reaction to him like [TS]

00:49:13   good performances are nuanced and you [TS]

00:49:15   can you can watch them again and [TS]

00:49:17   understand subtleties my got reaction to [TS]

00:49:20   Wheatley was black she felt like you [TS]

00:49:23   just seemed really annoying and then [TS]

00:49:26   like as you go through the game and you [TS]

00:49:28   like learn about his psychology and how [TS]

00:49:31   like you know it feels like he can never [TS]

00:49:34   you know get beyond this one single task [TS]

00:49:37   and then you see him [TS]

00:49:39   fail and like have a very human response [TS]

00:49:41   to not being able to live up to a job [TS]

00:49:43   and you see him breaking apart and this [TS]

00:49:46   darkness like come over him i thought [TS]

00:49:48   it's just a wonderful performance was [TS]

00:49:52   not your bullet-riddled building for my [TS]

00:49:53   other room he wouldn't know there's the [TS]

00:49:55   crop targets were like yeah well no [TS]

00:49:58   matter because I'm still holding all the [TS]

00:50:01   cards I guess what they're all full [TS]

00:50:04   houses never actually played cards [TS]

00:50:06   meaning to learn [TS]

00:50:07   I mean he's meant to be i mean that [TS]

00:50:09   character is meant to be bumbling an [TS]

00:50:10   annoying at the beginning so that it has [TS]

00:50:12   a bit has a place to go and it and it [TS]

00:50:14   does it but i do love I do love that [TS]

00:50:16   character of my ego big dreams that they [TS]

00:50:20   cannot live up to who [TS]

00:50:23   that's right that's a nice higher i like [TS]

00:50:25   the idea but also that he like they do [TS]

00:50:27   again I they get away with a lot of [TS]

00:50:29   twists in this thing because in it like [TS]

00:50:31   but they don't do the the easy way which [TS]

00:50:33   is have someone who's with you in the [TS]

00:50:35   beginning who you later find out the [TS]

00:50:37   entire time was plotting to be the bad [TS]

00:50:39   guy and as it turns out the bad guys [TS]

00:50:41   actually the good guy that is not what [TS]

00:50:43   happens in Portal 2 he didn't intend to [TS]

00:50:46   be a good guy [TS]

00:50:47   it's just that when he got into that [TS]

00:50:48   chassis it's like a all this power [TS]

00:50:50   yeah and I'm very smart now so that was [TS]

00:50:52   not his plan from the beginning and the [TS]

00:50:53   good guys like oh actually Gladys is my [TS]

00:50:55   friend or whatever [TS]

00:50:56   no not really you know when she gets [TS]

00:50:59   back in that thing like that that's what [TS]

00:51:01   makes the ending point because you know [TS]

00:51:03   Caroline deleted right you you think you [TS]

00:51:06   think you know what's up with these AIS [TS]

00:51:07   but you don't because glad us is it's [TS]

00:51:10   never gonna be your super duper friend [TS]

00:51:12   and Wheatley really was trying to be a [TS]

00:51:14   good guy but just you you put them into [TS]

00:51:16   that robotic frame and give him all this [TS]

00:51:18   information and just things things go [TS]

00:51:21   wrong so how it's gonna corrupt yeah and [TS]

00:51:23   and it's it's a greater those few turns [TS]

00:51:26   again and like I like a two-hour game [TS]

00:51:28   they do those terms you normally get [TS]

00:51:29   those number of turns like a you know [TS]

00:51:31   hundred our final fantasy that game they [TS]

00:51:32   cram them into two hours it's just a [TS]

00:51:34   fairly good density of interesting and [TS]

00:51:37   somewhat unexpected plot twists all [TS]

00:51:40   which feel honest and sort of human [TS]

00:51:41   which is weird to say when you think I [TS]

00:51:43   I but can somebody make me a t-shirt [TS]

00:51:45   that says Gladys is never going to be [TS]

00:51:47   your super duper fresh and expansion [TS]

00:51:49   that that's a title that is what she may [TS]

00:51:51   not kill you would be like you're not [TS]

00:51:54   going to the house [TS]

00:51:55   let's not let's talk about we've been [TS]

00:51:57   talking a lot about upside and we should [TS]

00:51:59   talk about what the WHA RR maybe our [TS]

00:52:02   criticisms and negative feelings about [TS]

00:52:04   about portal are Breanna you wanna jump [TS]

00:52:06   in [TS]

00:52:06   yeah yeah I mean look this game is a [TS]

00:52:09   masterpiece if I our call correctly I [TS]

00:52:11   think it got a 10 back on gamespot when [TS]

00:52:14   it came out I may be remembering their [TS]

00:52:15   room but we we all agreed that this game [TS]

00:52:17   is a masterpiece [TS]

00:52:19   so yeah this is this is just nitpicking [TS]

00:52:22   um I think portal two is a much stronger [TS]

00:52:27   game from a narrative point of view I [TS]

00:52:30   think mechanically portal two is a [TS]

00:52:34   weaker game than portal 1 i'm a portal 1 [TS]

00:52:38   the mechanics of it basically came from [TS]

00:52:41   an indie game that you know valve saw [TS]

00:52:44   they saw the potential in it and you [TS]

00:52:46   know basically bought it and turn it [TS]

00:52:48   into part of the orange box and [TS]

00:52:49   basically expanded the idea and if you [TS]

00:52:52   look at portal to the new gel mechanic [TS]

00:52:56   is something very similar to that the [TS]

00:52:59   day they saw on in the game and they [TS]

00:53:01   kind of took that mechanic and put it on [TS]

00:53:03   there you have to say I thought those [TS]

00:53:05   puzzles are fun i enjoyed portal to but [TS]

00:53:10   I felt like that particularly did not [TS]

00:53:12   it didn't feels organic with it [TS]

00:53:16   I and I actually think the later half of [TS]

00:53:19   portal 2 is actually kind of weak [TS]

00:53:22   because i think most of the puzzles come [TS]

00:53:26   down to this this frustration factor we [TS]

00:53:29   find yourself with the portal gun and [TS]

00:53:31   you're going ok what is the part of this [TS]

00:53:33   room this covered in moondust paint so [TS]

00:53:37   you find yourself shooting portals [TS]

00:53:39   everywhere just waiting for something to [TS]

00:53:41   stick very often way way way way out in [TS]

00:53:45   the distance just like hoping to find [TS]

00:53:48   this one little tile and it's it was to [TS]

00:53:50   me was very reminiscent of this you guys [TS]

00:53:53   remember in the the eighties when you [TS]

00:53:55   play these are [TS]

00:53:56   you adventure games that would very much [TS]

00:53:57   be a pixel hunt here I to find the exact [TS]

00:54:01   with the hospital i can click on that [TS]

00:54:03   exactly and I i still think this was was [TS]

00:54:07   well done but I feel like it was it was [TS]

00:54:10   weaker let me double up on that uh one [TS]

00:54:13   of the things that struck me in and i [TS]

00:54:14   know this is again funny for me to say [TS]

00:54:16   this is somebody who doesn't play a lot [TS]

00:54:17   of games and doesn't mind that this was [TS]

00:54:19   easier and i totally get the conceit of [TS]

00:54:22   the fact that these are test levels so [TS]

00:54:25   the whole point of them is that there's [TS]

00:54:26   a solution but after a while I did find [TS]

00:54:31   myself being disappointed that every [TS]

00:54:33   time there's an angled wall you you drop [TS]

00:54:37   through a portal on to a portal on the [TS]

00:54:39   angled wall and will be flung exactly [TS]

00:54:41   where you need to go and I started and I [TS]

00:54:43   start to think i get i get why they [TS]

00:54:46   explain why this is because these are [TS]

00:54:48   test portals but it didn't it didn't [TS]

00:54:51   feel organic to be in it and it felt not [TS]

00:54:53   dangerous enough i like I wanted there [TS]

00:54:55   to be angled walls that didn't fling me [TS]

00:54:57   anywhere or flung they don't give you a [TS]

00:54:59   lot of falsely right or that were three [TS]

00:55:01   wide and you if you put it on the the [TS]

00:55:03   left side you would be safe but on the [TS]

00:55:05   right as i may be a little bit of [TS]

00:55:06   alignment but that everything the main [TS]

00:55:08   challenge that portal 2 has is can you [TS]

00:55:10   make a longer game especially for [TS]

00:55:12   players who have played portal one where [TS]

00:55:14   they don't get tired of doing the same [TS]

00:55:15   thing that's what gets into the tony was [TS]

00:55:17   saying is like throughout the whole [TS]

00:55:19   length of portal to the way they're [TS]

00:55:20   trying to stave off boredom or [TS]

00:55:22   repetition is by it's gradually adding [TS]

00:55:24   new mechanics and when you when you [TS]

00:55:27   gradually add this new mechanically [TS]

00:55:28   don't remove the old one so like the [TS]

00:55:30   angled walls with with you know putting [TS]

00:55:32   a portal on them [TS]

00:55:33   those are still there just because it [TS]

00:55:34   assumes you've learned that and it's a [TS]

00:55:35   given but hopefully on that level [TS]

00:55:37   there's something new like something you [TS]

00:55:38   know you're doing with the gel or [TS]

00:55:39   something new we're doing with those [TS]

00:55:40   little by little glowy walls yeah [TS]

00:55:43   whatever [TS]

00:55:43   I mean it's a little weird from a puzzle [TS]

00:55:45   design because like in every chamber [TS]

00:55:48   it's like you're going to use every kind [TS]

00:55:50   of interactive part of it right you're [TS]

00:55:51   going to use every angled wall and every [TS]

00:55:53   laser beam and things like that there's [TS]

00:55:54   no extra pieces like it on some of the [TS]

00:55:57   levels though it does give you a fairly [TS]

00:55:59   wide open white space and with the [TS]

00:56:01   portal and you do have to be someone [TS]

00:56:02   like portal 2 got better about letting [TS]

00:56:04   you place portals on walls and sort of [TS]

00:56:06   like [TS]

00:56:06   non-integral positions such as never [TS]

00:56:08   like buttons you don't need or but you [TS]

00:56:10   like working together there's a there's [TS]

00:56:12   a level late in Portal 2 where there's [TS]

00:56:14   one angled wall and that's the one you [TS]

00:56:16   have to obviously slingshot yourself [TS]

00:56:17   through to get to the part on the other [TS]

00:56:19   side it is exactly time for that and [TS]

00:56:21   that's how it works and there's a ramp [TS]

00:56:23   and it's very end there's orange gel and [TS]

00:56:26   you're like well I know how this works [TS]

00:56:27   and a one-level it's like great I know [TS]

00:56:29   how this works i need to figure out how [TS]

00:56:30   to spray the orange gel on the ramp and [TS]

00:56:32   I can jump over it and the ramp is the [TS]

00:56:34   ramp is not that the puzzle the ramp is [TS]

00:56:36   the what you're solving for that and yet [TS]

00:56:39   I I kept feeling like really every [TS]

00:56:41   single item that is out of whack here [TS]

00:56:43   slightly is is going to be used in the [TS]

00:56:45   solution like I never had a question the [TS]

00:56:47   ramp was going to be part of the [TS]

00:56:48   solution the you know the egg wall was [TS]

00:56:51   going to be part of the solution [TS]

00:56:52   yeah but that's the type of type of game [TS]

00:56:54   it doesn't mention i can see it supports [TS]

00:56:55   that but like the other thing is they're [TS]

00:56:57   trying not to give you a dead end it's [TS]

00:56:59   like that the directive in Mariano games [TS]

00:57:01   that basically like this should be there [TS]

00:57:03   should be no way that you can get [TS]

00:57:05   yourself into a situation where the only [TS]

00:57:06   way out is to restart the level you're [TS]

00:57:08   going to die and i get that when you [TS]

00:57:09   someplace in order to or I did actually [TS]

00:57:11   that did actually happen and what that [TS]

00:57:13   but that's what they're trying to [TS]

00:57:14   prevent by sort of the conservation of [TS]

00:57:16   items or something that is like never [TS]

00:57:18   let the person get into a situation [TS]

00:57:20   where they can't finish level either by [TS]

00:57:22   activating something like and now you [TS]

00:57:23   can't take it back or now you have no [TS]

00:57:25   way to wash off your gel or anything [TS]

00:57:26   like that that's part of just you know [TS]

00:57:28   good puzzle designed for to avoiding [TS]

00:57:30   frustration sort of the modern age of [TS]

00:57:31   gaming hell didn't carry a screw you get [TS]

00:57:33   stuck start the ballgame over and I like [TS]

00:57:35   I'd like an extra angled wall or two so [TS]

00:57:38   i have to actually look and think that [TS]

00:57:41   which one of these is going to point me [TS]

00:57:44   in a place i want to go but I literally [TS]

00:57:46   I didn't have to do that because I knew [TS]

00:57:48   it would put me somewhere there are [TS]

00:57:50   weaker levels and stronger level i got [TS]

00:57:51   some of the levels where you just kind [TS]

00:57:52   of passing through sort of like an [TS]

00:57:54   atrium where there is kind of a minor [TS]

00:57:56   puzzle to make progress really the thing [TS]

00:57:58   that's happening there is like some long [TS]

00:58:00   voiceover and like not it's not like [TS]

00:58:02   test chambers because once you get into [TS]

00:58:03   the cave johnson part it's not like [TS]

00:58:05   you're in for one chamber that the test [TS]

00:58:06   chamber is easier to layout and [TS]

00:58:08   satisfying puzzle in this sort of [TS]

00:58:10   traveling through the underground [TS]

00:58:11   sometimes you just traveling through and [TS]

00:58:13   sometimes it's you know all right well [TS]

00:58:15   there's some minor possible to have to [TS]

00:58:16   do to move on to the next thing but this [TS]

00:58:18   is not a chamber [TS]

00:58:19   and like especially those parts with the [TS]

00:58:20   put the gel is flowing everywhere i'm [TS]

00:58:22   not entirely sure of this but i'm pretty [TS]

00:58:24   sure the very first time I place which [TS]

00:58:26   was a long time ago i saw some of those [TS]

00:58:28   puzzles and sort of the the non the [TS]

00:58:31   non-standard way often making it harder [TS]

00:58:34   for myself and the actual solution is [TS]

00:58:35   but there are multiple ways to solve [TS]

00:58:37   levels because once you have the gel and [TS]

00:58:39   you can spray everywhere you can solve [TS]

00:58:40   them in ways that don't involve for [TS]

00:58:42   example the one random angle wall [TS]

00:58:43   hanging out there because you can pull [TS]

00:58:44   these gels over here and we went out put [TS]

00:58:46   the whole room yeah riots want to paint [TS]

00:58:49   those rooms the gels change the formula [TS]

00:58:52   for a little bit in a way that I think [TS]

00:58:53   some people might feel weird about [TS]

00:58:55   because I think a lot of the really good [TS]

00:58:56   portal puzzles like figuring out the [TS]

00:58:59   solution and implementing it like [TS]

00:59:01   there's not a big gap there right like [TS]

00:59:03   implementing it is pretty easy and it's [TS]

00:59:05   not relying on on timing [TS]

00:59:06   whereas with the gel ones it's like the [TS]

00:59:09   solution is not obvious i'm just going [TS]

00:59:11   to start kind of throwing stuff at the [TS]

00:59:12   wall by spraying jello everywhere and [TS]

00:59:14   stumble across but there's more than one [TS]

00:59:16   solution like it if I do see what the [TS]

00:59:17   solution is it's like well now i'm going [TS]

00:59:19   to you know put gel everywhere and put [TS]

00:59:21   paint everywhere for a while [TS]

00:59:22   whereas other places it's a little bit [TS]

00:59:23   more kind of like rapid to kind of get [TS]

00:59:25   from solution to implemented solution [TS]

00:59:27   what would have the observing scientist [TS]

00:59:29   was that if you were actual test subject [TS]

00:59:31   in those chambers just flinging paint [TS]

00:59:33   everywhere like a lunatic [TS]

00:59:34   you know the only times you've got a [TS]

00:59:36   little easy with sticks ya talking with [TS]

00:59:38   water after it's what they use human [TS]

00:59:40   test subjects now and not and not the [TS]

00:59:42   Apes that they previously used I have to [TS]

00:59:44   say I was a little disappointed in [TS]

00:59:45   Portal 2 in terms of the level of [TS]

00:59:47   challenge right i mean i never really [TS]

00:59:49   felt really stuck or challenge and I [TS]

00:59:51   think they they do a good job with kind [TS]

00:59:53   of the co-op part of portal 2 is I think [TS]

00:59:56   a lot more challenging because the [TS]

00:59:57   complexity is increased because now you [TS]

00:59:58   have two characters [TS]

00:59:58   have two characters [TS]

01:00:00   and you can have your puzzles that [TS]

01:00:01   require for portals and lots of timing [TS]

01:00:03   and things like that but it's this kind [TS]

01:00:04   of tacked on like there is kind of a [TS]

01:00:07   story to the coop but it's not the same [TS]

01:00:09   you know engaging interesting story that [TS]

01:00:12   you have for the campaign so I'm [TS]

01:00:13   guessing there's probably a lot of [TS]

01:00:14   people that play Portal 2 and I've never [TS]

01:00:16   played the co-op part of portal and you [TS]

01:00:18   know you're not missing out on a lot in [TS]

01:00:19   terms of story but you are missing out [TS]

01:00:21   on some interesting challenges far as [TS]

01:00:23   the puzzles go there are videos of [TS]

01:00:24   people solving all the different rooms [TS]

01:00:27   in portal to an extremely exotic ways [TS]

01:00:30   either by for example not using items [TS]

01:00:32   that seem to be necessary but really [TS]

01:00:33   aren't or using momentum in ways sort of [TS]

01:00:36   not intended by the game designer and [TS]

01:00:38   that is sort of the metagame within [TS]

01:00:39   portal and portal two especially once a [TS]

01:00:40   jealous come in because you can solve [TS]

01:00:43   level without without doing the [TS]

01:00:44   prescribed things involving very [TS]

01:00:47   difficult first person moves like [TS]

01:00:49   throwing cubes through things and [TS]

01:00:51   flinging yourself through a series of [TS]

01:00:53   portals and there is that extra level of [TS]

01:00:55   the game is just that that isn't [TS]

01:00:57   required like you can do it the easy way [TS]

01:00:58   and it works [TS]

01:00:59   the only reason you're doing it the hard [TS]

01:01:00   way to make it harder for yourself I [TS]

01:01:02   mean portal and portal two are crazy for [TS]

01:01:04   people who do speedruns but that's like [TS]

01:01:06   that's not kind of the game that's there [TS]

01:01:08   that's a game you can play with portal 2 [TS]

01:01:09   but that's not the game as intended [TS]

01:01:11   I i think that co-op mode of portal 2 is [TS]

01:01:15   is well done for what it is but I think [TS]

01:01:19   it I think it really betrays the the [TS]

01:01:21   spirit of portal and I I think you have [TS]

01:01:24   to really look at that era of gaming [TS]

01:01:27   when portal two came out and kind of get [TS]

01:01:29   put into some historic context yet this [TS]

01:01:32   is a time where I in order to combat [TS]

01:01:34   used game sales a electronic arts had [TS]

01:01:38   started Institute five dollar fee to [TS]

01:01:40   access multiplayer too kind recruit [TS]

01:01:43   these fees and you know a lot of games [TS]

01:01:45   had had a multiplayer mode kind of [TS]

01:01:48   tacked on in order to you know like oh [TS]

01:01:51   no don't take my game back don't sell it [TS]

01:01:53   like keep me I promise there's gonna be [TS]

01:01:54   content coming which be a portal to [TS]

01:01:57   follow it up with um I know you Jason I [TS]

01:02:00   have to push back and disagree with you [TS]

01:02:02   a bit on the difficulty level just [TS]

01:02:04   because i know so many people whose kind [TS]

01:02:07   of gateway drug into gaming was portal [TS]

01:02:09   and um i would actually i think it was [TS]

01:02:13   pretty [TS]

01:02:13   just the perfect difficulty I really [TS]

01:02:16   create concedes yeah I feel like at the [TS]

01:02:18   end of portal to having it be a little [TS]

01:02:22   bit more or less of a converse a a [TS]

01:02:26   conservation of features in a room that [TS]

01:02:28   you have to think about it a little more [TS]

01:02:30   is probably not [TS]

01:02:31   upping the difficulty too much at that [TS]

01:02:33   point because it felt I I felt kind of [TS]

01:02:36   seeing me [TS]

01:02:36   believe me i think i can't believe i'm [TS]

01:02:37   making this argument because i love your [TS]

01:02:39   level of difficulty portal but what is [TS]

01:02:42   there for me it was like this again a [TS]

01:02:44   few times right guy all the way to the [TS]

01:02:46   end like it should be getting harder [TS]

01:02:47   here shouldn't have to guess about [TS]

01:02:49   whether this is the right thing to jump [TS]

01:02:51   through but it says I don't just jump [TS]

01:02:52   it'll take you somewhere good and it [TS]

01:02:54   would share and that's fine [TS]

01:02:56   like I don't agree but that's er that's [TS]

01:02:58   fine but but where it feels in Congress [TS]

01:03:01   to me is with portal to co-op which my [TS]

01:03:04   husband and I called divorce method [TS]

01:03:06   because it's it is so unbelievably like [TS]

01:03:11   portal is a game it's one of these rare [TS]

01:03:13   games i really look for with for Frank [TS]

01:03:16   who isn't up late let's destroy [TS]

01:03:18   everything like BB i got captain toad [TS]

01:03:21   Frank and I need to hang out more [TS]

01:03:23   I think Franklin and wait going oh my [TS]

01:03:25   god just 14 watch watch some Star Trek [TS]

01:03:28   will play some gentle cases multiple [TS]

01:03:30   yeah yeah but it's the difficulty spike [TS]

01:03:33   is so high where it's really a game that [TS]

01:03:37   only expert players can get through [TS]

01:03:40   because like you're not just dealing [TS]

01:03:41   with like suddenly have four portals and [TS]

01:03:45   you're trying to communicate with people [TS]

01:03:47   across an internet connection and there [TS]

01:03:49   are many more speed puzzles and I just I [TS]

01:03:54   i think that it's a great game for what [TS]

01:03:57   it is but I think it lacks the [TS]

01:04:00   accessibility that makes portals such a [TS]

01:04:02   beautiful perfect example of game decide [TS]

01:04:05   yet think it really could betrays that [TS]

01:04:07   casual audience and I think it's sad [TS]

01:04:09   that there's an entire layer of portal [TS]

01:04:12   that you know a lot of the audience is [TS]

01:04:14   just simply never going to get to [TS]

01:04:16   explore and I I think you can look at [TS]

01:04:19   some examples of game design like the [TS]

01:04:22   last lara croft in the temple of Osiris [TS]

01:04:25   this is a game that [TS]

01:04:26   you know how they got a lot of press but [TS]

01:04:28   it is a really really good example of [TS]

01:04:31   multiplayer where the puzzles change for [TS]

01:04:34   one two or three players and because of [TS]

01:04:37   that it's accessible to players of [TS]

01:04:39   vastly different levels of skill and I [TS]

01:04:42   just think that this masterpiece of a [TS]

01:04:44   game did not handle that most [TS]

01:04:46   particularly skillfully know you played [TS]

01:04:48   the combo didn't you [TS]

01:04:49   yep what you'd what what do you think [TS]

01:04:52   about it I mean I think you know it it [TS]

01:04:55   means you can only play it with one [TS]

01:04:56   other person that's right flexibility [TS]

01:04:58   right it doesn't remember is one you [TS]

01:05:00   still want it by yourself right you know [TS]

01:05:03   you can't play it with two other people [TS]

01:05:04   i mean i think it does an okay job in [TS]

01:05:07   terms of like we're gonna throw some [TS]

01:05:08   more complicated puzzles at you [TS]

01:05:10   um I think a lot of people's experiences [TS]

01:05:12   will be shaped by what that person [TS]

01:05:15   they're collaborating with is because [TS]

01:05:16   for example if you know if you're [TS]

01:05:19   playing with somebody who is more [TS]

01:05:21   comfortable with portal than you and is [TS]

01:05:22   going to kind of run ahead and tell you [TS]

01:05:24   what to do for everything like that's [TS]

01:05:25   not going to be a satisfying experience [TS]

01:05:27   right i mean i think you know I i played [TS]

01:05:29   it with I think different parts of it [TS]

01:05:31   with different people they didn't think [TS]

01:05:32   it was like an add on to the second the [TS]

01:05:34   multiplayer that got released at some [TS]

01:05:35   point I played that with a different [TS]

01:05:37   person that I played the first part you [TS]

01:05:38   know in the ideal experience like it's a [TS]

01:05:40   good collaboration and i'm really into [TS]

01:05:42   puzzles and work on a lot of puzzles you [TS]

01:05:44   know they're not video game-related it's [TS]

01:05:45   fun to work with somebody else but it's [TS]

01:05:47   fun when it's a collaboration and when [TS]

01:05:49   people go back and forth and you know [TS]

01:05:50   somebody's able to contribute something [TS]

01:05:52   and somebody else is able to you know [TS]

01:05:53   build on top of that but I mean I played [TS]

01:05:55   lots of collaborative games you know [TS]

01:05:58   that have not gone well I'll never [TS]

01:06:00   forget a particularly bad experience [TS]

01:06:02   where I was playing a game of [TS]

01:06:04   Neverwinter and like I got lost and I [TS]

01:06:06   showed up at the big boss fight and like [TS]

01:06:08   the big boss was dead and my friend had [TS]

01:06:10   like already opened a portal back to [TS]

01:06:11   town and like it is like so i just [TS]

01:06:13   showed up at the murder scene and all [TS]

01:06:15   the loot is God and it's like I don't [TS]

01:06:17   know what I'm doing so you know but [TS]

01:06:18   that's more about the you know who [TS]

01:06:20   you're playing with and how that's kind [TS]

01:06:21   of facilitated than the game itself [TS]

01:06:23   alright but you know its weak as far as [TS]

01:06:26   you know it's the stacked on kind of [TS]

01:06:27   side story right and you know there's [TS]

01:06:29   you play as they too funny little robots [TS]

01:06:30   and that's kind of fun and they're a [TS]

01:06:32   little bit more more Gladys but the you [TS]

01:06:34   know the heart is not there is a lot [TS]

01:06:35   more about [TS]

01:06:36   the puzzles in the mechanics of the [TS]

01:06:38   puzzles which you know pales compared to [TS]

01:06:41   the you know the delightful story that [TS]

01:06:42   you get portal 2 but you're not invested [TS]

01:06:44   in the in the two robots though like now [TS]

01:06:46   they really didn't have a story and [TS]

01:06:49   there is a plot point revealed the end [TS]

01:06:50   of the coop thing but you're not you [TS]

01:06:53   don't embody them in the way that you [TS]

01:06:54   embody channel when you place even kind [TS]

01:06:56   of the juke they get disassembled and [TS]

01:06:58   reassembled at the beginning and end of [TS]

01:06:59   every level right there like they're [TS]

01:07:01   totally disposable was like a Star Trek [TS]

01:07:03   transporter yeah I i completely agree [TS]

01:07:06   about there's not being a lot of heart [TS]

01:07:08   in it but the same time it is really [TS]

01:07:09   nice to play because you're like i just [TS]

01:07:11   want a little bit more portal sometimes [TS]

01:07:13   you know because things are so short you [TS]

01:07:15   need a little bit it's like this one get [TS]

01:07:17   that last chocolate from the fridge you [TS]

01:07:19   know that's what it feels like so I [TS]

01:07:21   played with them [TS]

01:07:22   somebody from I think he's from Germany [TS]

01:07:24   underscore and d underscore he just like [TS]

01:07:26   answered my call out on twitter i'm like [TS]

01:07:28   i need to play this quick get over here [TS]

01:07:30   while the other score family is a it's a [TS]

01:07:31   serious i don't know if they're related [TS]

01:07:35   it underscores German cousin with us [TS]

01:07:39   call it ok little bit now it was it was [TS]

01:07:44   really fun playing with him and we've [TS]

01:07:45   had both never played before even though [TS]

01:07:46   it's like you know years later since [TS]

01:07:48   it's been released so like it is just [TS]

01:07:51   it's a it's portal dessert that's pretty [TS]

01:07:53   primitive [TS]

01:07:53   yeah it's a really different experience [TS]

01:07:55   right because when you're playing the [TS]

01:07:56   single-player like you're alone with you [TS]

01:07:58   know Wheatley Gladys and and Cave [TS]

01:08:00   Johnson whereas you know I would admit [TS]

01:08:02   when i played the multiplayer it's like [TS]

01:08:03   kind of non-stop back and forth banter [TS]

01:08:05   and like what if we put a portal over [TS]

01:08:07   here what if we pour it's a very [TS]

01:08:08   different game experience me [TS]

01:08:10   yeah it's not the meat and potatoes of [TS]

01:08:11   portal is a little you know something i [TS]

01:08:15   just want to mention my son is no longer [TS]

01:08:18   obsessed with portal but for a long time [TS]

01:08:20   he was obsessed with portal and he was [TS]

01:08:21   not obsessed with portal from playing it [TS]

01:08:23   and he plays minecraft he placed her [TS]

01:08:25   area and and you know he in [TS]

01:08:28   he's good now 3d game literate and I [TS]

01:08:30   think if you played portal now he would [TS]

01:08:32   have no problem with it at all although [TS]

01:08:34   you'd have to maybe scratches headed at [TS]

01:08:36   some of the puzzles but i think i think [TS]

01:08:37   he would he would enjoy it here my [TS]

01:08:40   daughter tried to play the coop and they [TS]

01:08:41   got like three levels and they're like a [TS]

01:08:43   forget this then went to Minecraft but [TS]

01:08:45   he was obsessed with portals because he [TS]

01:08:47   loved the concept [TS]

01:08:48   there was maybe when he was in third [TS]

01:08:51   grade everyday walking him to school the [TS]

01:08:54   entire conversation was about how much [TS]

01:08:57   easier would be to get to school if we [TS]

01:08:59   could only make a portal and we would [TS]

01:09:02   talk about various ways you could use [TS]

01:09:04   the portal and other places you could go [TS]

01:09:05   with the portal and do you put the [TS]

01:09:06   portal outside the school or do you put [TS]

01:09:08   it inside if you put inside people walk [TS]

01:09:10   into our house from the other side of [TS]

01:09:11   the portal we had long conversations I [TS]

01:09:14   will always think about portal and think [TS]

01:09:16   about the fact that my son really wants [TS]

01:09:19   a portal gun and unfortunately you know [TS]

01:09:21   there isn't one yet maybe he'll invent [TS]

01:09:24   one but we have a plan to mine moondust [TS]

01:09:26   that would be the hardest part of that [TS]

01:09:29   they don't need it i just know it's so [TS]

01:09:31   the last the last the last boss battle [TS]

01:09:35   and portal 2i i really enjoyed it but I [TS]

01:09:38   i especially enjoyed the very end as the [TS]

01:09:41   ceiling comes down and the moon is [TS]

01:09:43   exposed and you can see outside for the [TS]

01:09:45   first time and the last act you have to [TS]

01:09:47   perform is to shoot a portal gun on the [TS]

01:09:51   moon and and there's a delay as it goes [TS]

01:09:55   before it engages i I just I thought [TS]

01:09:58   that was such an awesome kind of [TS]

01:10:00   thinking outside of all the scope of [TS]

01:10:03   this game up to now so simple a moment [TS]

01:10:06   and yet such a wonderful moment i really [TS]

01:10:09   i really enjoyed that last day as a [TS]

01:10:10   great example of a game on rails because [TS]

01:10:12   oh yeah it shoves your viewpoint up [TS]

01:10:15   there [TS]

01:10:15   it puts the thing in your face it is [TS]

01:10:17   like it is in a many ways taking away [TS]

01:10:20   player agency and yet it does not feel [TS]

01:10:22   like the takeaway player agency because [TS]

01:10:24   they have so masterfully constructing a [TS]

01:10:26   game and universe to engage you that [TS]

01:10:28   that as soon as you get knocked [TS]

01:10:30   backwards and the ceiling comes open [TS]

01:10:31   it's not it's not unreasonable for the [TS]

01:10:34   moon visible because in the game they [TS]

01:10:35   want to put something interesting you [TS]

01:10:36   know like the same reason complex in the [TS]

01:10:38   moon lander because they won't have some [TS]

01:10:39   visual address right and it immediately [TS]

01:10:41   cursed I've never heard of someone [TS]

01:10:43   getting up to that point and not knowing [TS]

01:10:44   what to do like and it feels like it [TS]

01:10:46   feels like it occurred to you as our and [TS]

01:10:49   I clever that you know aren't I clever [TS]

01:10:52   isn't the game clever like you feel [TS]

01:10:53   satisfaction of having solved someone [TS]

01:10:55   reality what happens they shoved your [TS]

01:10:56   cursor onto the moon right like and they [TS]

01:10:59   give you no other [TS]

01:11:00   options like it is it is such a [TS]

01:11:02   subversion of taking away player agency [TS]

01:11:04   while the same time making the player [TS]

01:11:05   feel like they figured it out and it is [TS]

01:11:08   a clever idea and it is done in a nice [TS]

01:11:10   little animation in some ways I do feel [TS]

01:11:12   like it's a little bit of a cheap we're [TS]

01:11:14   like it you know once you see the [TS]

01:11:16   strings you're like boy that really just [TS]

01:11:18   you know rubbing my nose in it but the [TS]

01:11:20   first time I played I just felt like [TS]

01:11:21   that's brilliant and I'm brilliant and [TS]

01:11:25   this game is real and its story payoff [TS]

01:11:26   to I mean it's you know and the whole [TS]

01:11:28   game is about making you feel clever or [TS]

01:11:30   brilliant right and so they're gonna [TS]

01:11:31   really put a cherry on top of it with [TS]

01:11:33   that last night haha the best the best [TS]

01:11:35   thing is they set it up so that you have [TS]

01:11:36   to put a portal underneath you know that [TS]

01:11:39   won't we [TS]

01:11:40   you have to do that to do the earlier [TS]

01:11:41   part of the game which sets you like you [TS]

01:11:43   can't get into as far as i know you [TS]

01:11:44   can't get into a situation where the [TS]

01:11:46   other portal isn't already said at the [TS]

01:11:48   time you're pointed at the moon so you [TS]

01:11:50   never get into a situation where you're [TS]

01:11:51   like well if you've forgotten to put [TS]

01:11:52   that portal there then your revelation [TS]

01:11:55   is undercut by the fact that you realize [TS]

01:11:56   you need to put a second part underneath [TS]

01:11:57   i'm pretty sure it's always underneath [TS]

01:11:59   by that point [TS]

01:11:59   yeah you got you got to that's how you [TS]

01:12:01   that's how you do the last thing with [TS]

01:12:03   him so I think we have to talk about one [TS]

01:12:06   last thing with this game which is I get [TS]

01:12:09   the ending songs by Jonathan haha so I [TS]

01:12:13   had someone who I only like electronica [TS]

01:12:17   EDM and i got like some rap but [TS]

01:12:20   generally speaking was kind of like [TS]

01:12:22   folks say like one dude with guitar [TS]

01:12:24   playing something it's like maybe [TS]

01:12:26   because I grew up in Mississippi but [TS]

01:12:28   just like it's some part of my being you [TS]

01:12:29   hate it I hate it I don't know so it was [TS]

01:12:33   like watching a play he's a little idea [TS]

01:12:35   what are you talking about what the top [TS]

01:12:37   yeah yeah the desktop site like this [TS]

01:12:40   both of these songs on Jace actually [TS]

01:12:42   have the same experiences you that went [TS]

01:12:45   on this game came out I said arch box on [TS]

01:12:48   the first person shooter I don't give a [TS]

01:12:50   crap [TS]

01:12:50   he now and i actually just skip or [TS]

01:12:53   completely despite all the accolades in [TS]

01:12:55   a claim and just like nope I and then I [TS]

01:12:58   heard someone singing ah the the portal [TS]

01:13:02   song in rock band because they released [TS]

01:13:05   as a free tract and I'm like that's a [TS]

01:13:06   really moving fine track i want to know [TS]

01:13:09   more about that game and then your steam [TS]

01:13:12   came to OS 10 and you know download it [TS]

01:13:15   and it was as black as a wonderful gate [TS]

01:13:18   these things [TS]

01:13:20   you too [TS]

01:13:30   people [TS]

01:13:34   so um I just I think that these songs [TS]

01:13:38   both of them are districts something [TS]

01:13:42   about them that is is so emotional and [TS]

01:13:46   moving but they're also really catchy [TS]

01:13:48   and well done [TS]

01:13:49   it's like I downloaded other albums of [TS]

01:13:51   his helping like it hate their home but [TS]

01:13:54   they feel like the new smaller just so [TS]

01:13:56   awesome 6 plus laughing [TS]

01:14:03   circumstances [TS]

01:14:09   three [TS]

01:14:18   is it [TS]

01:14:24   I don't know i just i think they're part [TS]

01:14:27   of what makes this a masterpiece because [TS]

01:14:30   you get to the end and then like you [TS]

01:14:32   have this really touching musical number [TS]

01:14:35   with like turret singing to you and it's [TS]

01:14:36   magical [TS]

01:14:56   anything in the first one like you beat [TS]

01:14:58   Gladys and then she seems to you right i [TS]

01:15:00   mean that that is there's so many things [TS]

01:15:02   in video games where it's like I'm doing [TS]

01:15:04   this thing that I've done before I've [TS]

01:15:06   never beat a boss that have a boss sing [TS]

01:15:08   to me over the end credits that was new [TS]

01:15:10   and it continues the story it's not like [TS]

01:15:12   yeah and it's not like oh here's a song [TS]

01:15:14   reviewing what you've done in the game [TS]

01:15:16   know the song continues the game the [TS]

01:15:17   song reinforces the game and informs the [TS]

01:15:20   game at like it is as integrated into [TS]

01:15:22   the game [TS]

01:15:23   i I don't know what the creative process [TS]

01:15:24   was I imagine that he played through a [TS]

01:15:27   rough cut of the game first and then [TS]

01:15:28   made a song about it but there's any [TS]

01:15:30   information is added in the songs i [TS]

01:15:32   didn't have a summary of the story [TS]

01:15:34   because yeah i think i read an interview [TS]

01:15:35   with him about it and content and [TS]

01:15:37   emotion is added by the song so it's not [TS]

01:15:39   like you know I like a good credit [TS]

01:15:42   sequence to a lot of times it's just [TS]

01:15:43   like a kind of reviewing what you've [TS]

01:15:44   done in the game this continues the [TS]

01:15:46   especially still alive which is just [TS]

01:15:47   again another not another jab and aside [TS]

01:15:50   from Gladys like great victory haha and [TS]

01:15:53   then it's like no I'm still alive when [TS]

01:15:55   you're dying I'll be still alive when [TS]

01:15:57   you're dead I will be still a lot of you [TS]

01:15:58   know like it means she's like exactly [TS]

01:16:00   you know starting with this was a [TS]

01:16:01   triumph refusing to admit defeat [TS]

01:16:03   despite the fact that she is blue up and [TS]

01:16:05   I want you gone with something you know [TS]

01:16:07   capping off the emotional note of the [TS]

01:16:10   end portal to which it i'm talking but i [TS]

01:16:12   do want to talk about the song the song [TS]

01:16:15   is part of the ending you can't say well [TS]

01:16:17   now i'm not interested I'm not gonna [TS]

01:16:18   watch the credits and it's over you have [TS]

01:16:19   to want and not because there's some [TS]

01:16:21   little scene at the end with each meow [TS]

01:16:23   indian food or whatever but it's like [TS]

01:16:24   very appears yes [TS]

01:16:25   yeah yeah it's no it's a captain and [TS]

01:16:28   ended there in character and they've got [TS]

01:16:29   the same humor that's in the in the game [TS]

01:16:32   and and I love them both [TS]

01:16:35   I i love them both and in I enjoy [TS]

01:16:38   listening to the various versions of [TS]

01:16:39   them the game versions and other [TS]

01:16:40   versions that have been done at and and [TS]

01:16:42   what you gon is great because first off [TS]

01:16:44   it's tough act to follow to to follow [TS]

01:16:47   still alive which you know it became [TS]

01:16:49   quite a little hit in some circles and [TS]

01:16:52   yet because of the way it's done and it [TS]

01:16:55   addresses the story points and it's so [TS]

01:16:57   perfectly glad us to that it's you know [TS]

01:17:00   it's not even you win it's just look [TS]

01:17:03   okay i won't kill you go away which is [TS]

01:17:07   your victory right your victory is she's [TS]

01:17:09   not even try to [TS]

01:17:09   will you know just go away but the [TS]

01:17:11   underlying my something that's something [TS]

01:17:13   that we talked about at the update my [TS]

01:17:15   theory of how these all are all [TS]

01:17:17   connected is very obvious to me is that [TS]

01:17:19   you know Caroline was put into the [TS]

01:17:20   computer Chelle is caroline's daughter [TS]

01:17:23   probably adopted and the whole hang up [TS]

01:17:26   the glass as with channel is a [TS]

01:17:28   mother-daughter relationship where the [TS]

01:17:30   AIS malevolent wants to kill all humans [TS]

01:17:32   but something in her field an attachment [TS]

01:17:34   to this girl because it was her daughter [TS]

01:17:36   and so the whole thing of like you know [TS]

01:17:38   Caroline deleted but then why not kill [TS]

01:17:40   challenge like well the easiest thing to [TS]

01:17:42   do is really let you go because every [TS]

01:17:43   time I try to kill you it's really hard [TS]

01:17:44   no it isn't like and as soon as he sends [TS]

01:17:47   up you think like well that makes some [TS]

01:17:49   kind of logical sense she does this [TS]

01:17:50   little speech like well maybe this is it [TS]

01:17:51   does make sense she deleted Carolina [TS]

01:17:53   National of lunches decided the best way [TS]

01:17:55   to get rid of me to a movie but as you [TS]

01:17:57   go up the elevator the turret sing to [TS]

01:17:59   you in Italian with lyrics that call you [TS]

01:18:01   know talk about my baby and my little [TS]

01:18:03   girl like it is the only imagine the [TS]

01:18:06   mechanical manifestation of aperture [TS]

01:18:08   science expressing the emotion that the [TS]

01:18:10   little you know curved head of GLaDOS [TS]

01:18:12   can't say which is actually you're my [TS]

01:18:14   daughter and I love you and I can't kill [TS]

01:18:16   you [TS]

01:18:17   I just need to remove you and want you [TS]

01:18:19   gone is kind of like a I'm never going [TS]

01:18:22   to admit to you that I'm not killing you [TS]

01:18:23   because I love you really are going to [TS]

01:18:24   tell you is like really now I just want [TS]

01:18:26   you gone [TS]

01:18:27   it's kind of like that the the Gladys [TS]

01:18:29   yourself can't say these things to tell [TS]

01:18:32   but the whole of aperture science can [TS]

01:18:35   say it through you know through the [TS]

01:18:37   singing and through the removal and [TS]

01:18:38   everything that you guys checked out the [TS]

01:18:39   door and the door is closed behind her [TS]

01:18:40   and she's out to the strange world it's [TS]

01:18:43   and you and then you get the credit song [TS]

01:18:45   which which you think is saying I just [TS]

01:18:47   want to get rid of you i deprived you [TS]

01:18:48   feel anything for really just you know [TS]

01:18:50   and just need to get ready which is not [TS]

01:18:51   you know that I think the little you [TS]

01:18:54   know with the giant animal striped [TS]

01:18:56   turned away in the background which is [TS]

01:18:57   great singing that little song to you is [TS]

01:19:00   that one that one of the most memorable [TS]

01:19:02   moments of any game i think it's a [TS]

01:19:03   cutscene you know just the just that [TS]

01:19:06   ending trip up the elevators and [TS]

01:19:07   realizing that the glads really does [TS]

01:19:09   love me Mommy [TS]

01:19:11   oh no someone said the chat which I [TS]

01:19:14   totally agree with once that door is [TS]

01:19:15   closed after you know you're kicked out [TS]

01:19:17   of the facility and you're in the big [TS]

01:19:18   field of wheat and everything you turn [TS]

01:19:20   around you're like I just kind of want [TS]

01:19:22   to go back [TS]

01:19:23   like you do have that feeling someone [TS]

01:19:25   totally nailed it in the chat room and [TS]

01:19:27   said that and I was like yes that is [TS]

01:19:28   exactly how I felt like you kind of want [TS]

01:19:30   to go [TS]

01:19:30   you're like oh thank god freedom but i [TS]

01:19:33   have a choice now and i kinda want to go [TS]

01:19:35   back in but that's maybe as me just look [TS]

01:19:38   at the combine devastated the earth so [TS]

01:19:39   you don't hang out there anyway i like [TS]

01:19:41   throwing the cube out at you and [TS]

01:19:43   slamming the door is is that and stay [TS]

01:19:45   out well here's how i read that one the [TS]

01:19:48   Cubans thrown out here like and stay out [TS]

01:19:50   but when I read it as is and I know you [TS]

01:19:52   have an attachment to this cube so you [TS]

01:19:53   had your your mom sending your teddy [TS]

01:19:56   bear trying to make need to think that [TS]

01:19:58   real trying to make it seem like go and [TS]

01:20:00   take your stupid tour too but really [TS]

01:20:02   it's like I know you're gonna need your [TS]

01:20:03   teddy [TS]

01:20:03   do you guys ever wonder how they're [TS]

01:20:05   gonna start portal 3 because I wonder [TS]

01:20:07   about that life is not a better because [TS]

01:20:10   i don't think you need to have a portal [TS]

01:20:11   3 I think you think he'd have half life [TS]

01:20:14   3 first at the very least I here to [TS]

01:20:16   development for friends so that's what [TS]

01:20:19   does yeah I'm sure we're mill right [TS]

01:20:21   how could that would be into ok right [TS]

01:20:23   exactly except so my theory is it's [TS]

01:20:26   gonna be like the movie aliens [TS]

01:20:28   we're like chalice waking up in the [TS]

01:20:29   middle of the night and she's having [TS]

01:20:31   flashbacks and then like her companion [TS]

01:20:33   cube is there on the floor she strokes [TS]

01:20:35   it she says in you you little blank [TS]

01:20:38   you're staying right here and then like [TS]

01:20:39   she and the Marines from half-life like [TS]

01:20:42   go back to go back take over at first I [TS]

01:20:44   have to go back to you have to shave her [TS]

01:20:46   head because of lice are no force in [TS]

01:20:48   origin story and it's like baby child [TS]

01:20:50   she's like going around Chronicle you [TS]

01:20:52   can make the potato battery the science [TS]

01:20:55   fair [TS]

01:20:55   yeah it's like an extra season on your [TS]

01:20:57   favorite show you're like really you [TS]

01:20:58   don't need to do that right [TS]

01:21:00   maybe she could go and rescue Gladys [TS]

01:21:02   Gladys like you know gets into a jam [TS]

01:21:04   with having to do with the events of [TS]

01:21:06   half-life 3 interesting class doesn't [TS]

01:21:08   need to be rescued [TS]

01:21:09   I know will you think it's the rescue [TS]

01:21:11   and you get her and should try to kill [TS]

01:21:12   you again [TS]

01:21:13   no only from Chile needs to be rescued [TS]

01:21:15   from birds maybe there's another AI [TS]

01:21:16   problem in you know somewhere else or in [TS]

01:21:19   space or something like that then you [TS]

01:21:20   just a play space and you apply the [TS]

01:21:23   portal you know technology to another [TS]

01:21:25   another setup and don't go back into so [TS]

01:21:29   how do you add a new mechanic if you do [TS]

01:21:31   portal 3 like portal won was very simple [TS]

01:21:32   and it [TS]

01:21:33   energy mechanics portal 2 added pretty [TS]

01:21:36   much every mechanic they could think of [TS]

01:21:37   a 22 to pad out a two-hour game you [TS]

01:21:41   can't add you can't like now double [TS]

01:21:43   again the number of my candles because [TS]

01:21:44   we're mechanics that they cut so there [TS]

01:21:46   are other mechanics that you know they [TS]

01:21:47   tested and didn't you know didn't like [TS]

01:21:49   so maybe they can polish that off there [TS]

01:21:50   was in the original like indie game that [TS]

01:21:52   the game portal there was the mechanic [TS]

01:21:54   where you could shoot portals through [TS]

01:21:57   portals I was going to ask jason when [TS]

01:21:58   you have conversations with your son did [TS]

01:22:00   he ever ask why can't you or would it be [TS]

01:22:02   cool if you could shoot because I'm are [TS]

01:22:03   playing portal 1 and being frustrated [TS]

01:22:05   that you couldn't shoot at the order to [TS]

01:22:06   portal to portal i think probably a lot [TS]

01:22:08   of users probably got confused with oh [TS]

01:22:11   you know I I exactly i understand both [TS]

01:22:13   from a technical perspective why they [TS]

01:22:14   didn't do that in terms of the draw [TS]

01:22:16   distances and you know in that the time [TS]

01:22:19   that portal 1 you still want to and from [TS]

01:22:21   a mental perspective like if you let me [TS]

01:22:23   do that i can break these levels into a [TS]

01:22:25   million pieces cuz i would build this [TS]

01:22:26   shatter and a hall of mirrors and I'll [TS]

01:22:29   you'll never find your way back it'll be [TS]

01:22:30   like the end of interstellar i don't [TS]

01:22:32   know i think i think if you look at the [TS]

01:22:33   the indie game seem like you know [TS]

01:22:36   there's more innovation on ideas than [TS]

01:22:39   their there was when either this games [TS]

01:22:41   came to fruition [TS]

01:22:42   I if it were me I would scrap the gel [TS]

01:22:44   mechanic and what I would look forward I [TS]

01:22:46   think I think it didn't work well I i [TS]

01:22:49   thought it was good i thought was I [TS]

01:22:52   think it's something you should probably [TS]

01:22:53   revisit for maybe a level you know I i [TS]

01:22:56   think it's it's really going to be key [TS]

01:22:57   to find something new you know like the [TS]

01:23:01   it would be very sad if portal became a [TS]

01:23:04   call of duty need help you don't want to [TS]

01:23:07   poorly here forever just for all right [TS]

01:23:09   oh yeah it is not the mechanics are [TS]

01:23:12   enough to support that but like I think [TS]

01:23:13   you could take advantage of modern [TS]

01:23:14   technology and do more things that rely [TS]

01:23:16   on on the more better physics that we [TS]

01:23:19   have these days better fidelity physics [TS]

01:23:21   you could probably do a whole series of [TS]

01:23:23   levels with weird gravity right yeah or [TS]

01:23:26   early time he rolls airplane swapper any [TS]

01:23:29   you guys what yeah this is the swapper [TS]

01:23:32   was an interesting mechanic that seems [TS]

01:23:33   like it's right now obviously it's after [TS]

01:23:35   portal so it's from chirps partially [TS]

01:23:37   inspired by part of a portal was kind of [TS]

01:23:38   not the dawning of a of a a [TS]

01:23:41   an upswing in indy creativity but like [TS]

01:23:44   like preset now I indie games with very [TS]

01:23:47   clever interesting mechanics is there [TS]

01:23:49   they're all over the place compared to [TS]

01:23:51   where they were that's what that's why [TS]

01:23:52   portable so amazing it's like everything [TS]

01:23:54   was just you know quake 1 2 3 doom half [TS]

01:23:57   life you know [TS]

01:23:58   yeah battlefield 1942 whatever and then [TS]

01:24:01   you know portal was like this shining [TS]

01:24:03   light and now there's tons of games like [TS]

01:24:04   that and a lot of them implemented [TS]

01:24:06   mechanics that would have fit right in [TS]

01:24:08   in portal two or three but of course now [TS]

01:24:09   somebody else did them so I'm not [TS]

01:24:11   correctly you're saying John about the [TS]

01:24:13   the technical problems your source [TS]

01:24:16   I'm not as big an expert in sources [TS]

01:24:18   unreal obviously but your sources and [TS]

01:24:21   engine is really showing its age and you [TS]

01:24:24   know i was actually very surprised with [TS]

01:24:27   the amount of Polish they managed to get [TS]

01:24:29   on it for a portal to look as good as it [TS]

01:24:32   does so you know I think that there's [TS]

01:24:36   you know I don't know if the answer for [TS]

01:24:38   portal 3 would be to take source apart [TS]

01:24:41   and give it like yet another coat of [TS]

01:24:42   paint to you knew you know a whole new [TS]

01:24:46   ability to do shaders and modern [TS]

01:24:48   techniques for for surfaces you know [TS]

01:24:50   even though portal is it really a a game [TS]

01:24:53   that depends on snazzy graphics but um I [TS]

01:24:56   think your your your point about [TS]

01:24:57   technical limitations for the first two [TS]

01:25:00   games i think that's very well set my [TS]

01:25:02   only idea i'm going to throw out for a [TS]

01:25:05   portal 3 is actually think you know I [TS]

01:25:08   some of the gel stuff I could live [TS]

01:25:09   without but i would love a paint gun [TS]

01:25:11   that paints the white the white moon [TS]

01:25:14   dust paint so that you have so that you [TS]

01:25:17   have to think about where to put your [TS]

01:25:20   portal in someplace so we're just going [TS]

01:25:23   to paint the whole room [TS]

01:25:24   yeah well if you're crazy but I said I [TS]

01:25:26   like limited that's right i enjoy [TS]

01:25:28   painting things I could paint the whole [TS]

01:25:30   damn room and be like this is a [TS]

01:25:31   beautiful room and then I would win the [TS]

01:25:33   level and move on that could happen that [TS]

01:25:36   there's nothing wrong with that I they [TS]

01:25:37   could be interesting but if they gave me [TS]

01:25:39   like a machine gun and then there's like [TS]

01:25:40   guys shoot maybe there's an idea Nazis [TS]

01:25:43   there you have to run with that one that [TS]

01:25:44   I feel like that's something i have even [TS]

01:25:46   gotten to do that yet that sounds [TS]

01:25:48   exciting well Jason can play as a rat [TS]

01:25:50   men and just like go around planting all [TS]

01:25:51   the murals one of my guns good game [TS]

01:25:53   experience and I get [TS]

01:25:54   upgrade the guns new level but i have [TS]

01:25:57   special tables where I can only do it in [TS]

01:25:59   certain areas which is completely unreal [TS]

01:26:01   or program the turrets that's what I [TS]

01:26:02   want to do for the next game just [TS]

01:26:03   program the turrets send them out see [TS]

01:26:06   what they do it'll be like a tower [TS]

01:26:07   defense game with the dungeon keeper [TS]

01:26:09   I like the fact that a is full of [TS]

01:26:11   paradoxes that's a star star trek isn't [TS]

01:26:14   yeah yeah yeahs resist paradox that [TS]

01:26:17   beautiful moment where classes whole [TS]

01:26:19   plan defeating wheelie is doing a [TS]

01:26:20   captain kirk on weekly how I gotta pick [TS]

01:26:31   up my god now i'm sure i know i'm not [TS]

01:26:36   taking into the park [TS]

01:26:38   yeah that was a beautiful moment as a [TS]

01:26:40   fan of of confounding start tricking [TS]

01:26:43   androids I thought that was really good [TS]

01:26:44   i think the final thing output send [TS]

01:26:47   these alterations for the show notes but [TS]

01:26:48   pretty much every line they glad I [TS]

01:26:50   sweetly in the chorus and Cave Johnson [TS]

01:26:52   say are available on the portal wikidot [TS]

01:26:56   com with audio files and as two things [TS]

01:26:58   about that one there are so many good [TS]

01:27:00   lines and if you only play through the [TS]

01:27:02   game once you probably don't hear all [TS]

01:27:03   these you check these out and two if you [TS]

01:27:05   play the audio for them you realize how [TS]

01:27:08   much the line readings lose when they're [TS]

01:27:10   not played over the top of the music [TS]

01:27:12   it's like you know star wars without [TS]

01:27:13   Williams type thing where you watch a [TS]

01:27:15   movie without the soundtrack and you [TS]

01:27:16   realize boy the soundtrack is carrying a [TS]

01:27:18   lot of the way to this thing you mean [TS]

01:27:20   you might think back and say portal did [TS]

01:27:22   that even happen music in the background [TS]

01:27:23   it totally did because soon as you hear [TS]

01:27:25   these lines read without music they [TS]

01:27:26   sound like they're missing something [TS]

01:27:27   because you you remember tone to there's [TS]

01:27:30   a lot of room tone lot of echo in these [TS]

01:27:31   chambers lot of reverb yeah especially [TS]

01:27:34   in the final battle I can portal one [TS]

01:27:35   love it the same she's sending at you [TS]

01:27:37   with the music is like you weren't I'm [TS]

01:27:39   very well with the pacing of like [TS]

01:27:41   removing the course and dumping them [TS]

01:27:42   incinerator and then she says the [TS]

01:27:44   particular lines she has some great [TS]

01:27:45   lines that weekend on picking favorite [TS]

01:27:47   lines that Gladys says you can have [TS]

01:27:50   horrible persons that's what it says [TS]

01:27:54   here a horrible person we weren't even [TS]

01:27:55   testing for that love [TS]

01:27:58   alright well I think we have reached the [TS]

01:28:01   end I feel like I feel like we were very [TS]

01:28:04   comprehensive i'm going to be covered [TS]

01:28:06   that i'm going to portal everybody into [TS]

01:28:07   space now [TS]

01:28:08   space why it uh that would like to thank [TS]

01:28:12   my excellent panel this was a lot of fun [TS]

01:28:14   and I was fun [TS]

01:28:15   retesting portal to Tony sindelar thank [TS]

01:28:18   you so much for being here [TS]

01:28:19   this was a triumph years you know you [TS]

01:28:23   calling him first their mommies takes [TS]

01:28:25   the obviously yeah right [TS]

01:28:26   yep Brianna with pleasure to have you [TS]

01:28:28   back we should have you back again soon [TS]

01:28:30   and make a note here huge success [TS]

01:28:32   excellent tiffany our men thank you so [TS]

01:28:36   much for being back on it was great i'm [TS]

01:28:38   not prepared to the quote alright and [TS]

01:28:40   available person horrible person will [TS]

01:28:42   cut all this out no one knows what this [TS]

01:28:44   there's no recording of it [TS]

01:28:45   no it's just for us and John siracusa [TS]

01:28:48   thank you as always [TS]

01:28:50   okay look we both said a lot of things [TS]

01:28:52   that you're going to regret and thanks [TS]

01:28:55   everybody out there for listening [TS]

01:28:57   we will see you next time [TS]

01:29:07   but believe me I am still alive two plus [TS]

01:29:14   two is ten in base far I'm fine [TS]

01:29:18   that was my favorite line from portal [TS]

01:29:21   one I can't do it justice you should put [TS]

01:29:24   in the recording of it you think you're [TS]

01:29:25   doing some damage 2+2 is in baseball [TS]

01:29:32   I'm fine that's that's easy for me to [TS]

01:29:35   believe that's easy for you because I [TS]

01:29:38   left that when i was playing because you [TS]

01:29:39   know there's the stutter with the static [TS]

01:29:41   and everything i think my first laughs [TS]

01:29:43   at line is when i believe about you [TS]

01:29:46   subject name here must be the pride of [TS]

01:29:49   subject from tall yeah one and replaying [TS]

01:29:52   portal to one of my favorites was a [TS]

01:29:54   you're navigating this test chambers [TS]

01:29:56   faster than I can build them so feel [TS]

01:29:59   free to slow down and do whatever it is [TS]

01:30:01   you do when you're not destroying this [TS]

01:30:03   facility lots of you know semi fourth [TS]

01:30:06   wall breaking understanding like it [TS]

01:30:08   seems like all you do channel is pretty [TS]

01:30:10   much destroy this facility [TS]

01:30:11   I have to fix it and that's our [TS]

01:30:13   relationship there's a great moment [TS]

01:30:15   we're in one of the Chamber's toward the [TS]

01:30:17   end if you step on the catapult by [TS]

01:30:19   accident your flung up against the [TS]

01:30:22   monitor that weekly is looking at you in [TS]

01:30:24   and he said something like da bless you [TS]

01:30:27   little primate brain actually the room [TS]

01:30:30   with you I'm like technology complicate [TS]

01:30:32   we can hurt the big old gold face even [TS]

01:30:35   weekly but I love what that was a [TS]

01:30:37   wonderful book I just stepped on it by [TS]

01:30:38   accident got slung up to the monitor [TS]

01:30:40   that was a nice moment like the one [TS]

01:30:42   where she explains the metaphor intended [TS]

01:30:44   that the zinger lines actually gives you [TS]

01:30:46   insulting you going to the elevator and [TS]

01:30:47   she's like remember before when I was [TS]

01:30:48   talking about smelly garbage standing [TS]

01:30:50   around being useless [TS]

01:30:52   that was a metaphor I was actually [TS]

01:30:54   talking about you and I'm sorry you [TS]

01:30:57   didn't react at the time so I was [TS]

01:30:59   worried it sailed right over your head [TS]

01:31:01   which would have made this apology seem [TS]

01:31:03   insane that's why I had to call you [TS]

01:31:06   garbage a second time just now I think [TS]

01:31:08   the best one is assumed the party as for [TS]

01:31:11   its submission position or you will miss [TS]

01:31:13   the party [TS]

01:31:14   yes there was and as f1 related one kind [TS]

01:31:19   of turkey you stealing 20 majestically [TS]

01:31:22   like an eagle piloting a blimp middle of [TS]

01:31:27   that like all the weight comments in in [TS]

01:31:30   the second one again you know with the [TS]

01:31:31   whole sort of like finding ways to hurt [TS]

01:31:34   you emotionally [TS]

01:31:36   we're just not something you would think [TS]

01:31:37   in a i would do right we're gonna make a [TS]

01:31:40   statue of your corpse and show people [TS]

01:31:42   how not to eat over there had not how [TS]

01:31:44   not to be like oh and in the end of [TS]

01:31:49   portal one where she just gets into like [TS]

01:31:51   just where I think it's towards the end [TS]

01:31:53   when she's really falling apart what you [TS]

01:31:54   gonna leave me here I'll put you on [TS]

01:31:56   that's you have done sound getting it [TS]

01:32:00   done like second-grader level and salts [TS]

01:32:02   you can't think of anything clever [TS]

01:32:03   anymore i do the one visual joke that [TS]

01:32:06   always gets me is when you're going in [TS]

01:32:08   in Portal 2 and you're going down into [TS]

01:32:10   the deep places there's that you see the [TS]

01:32:11   giant vault door and you have to look [TS]

01:32:13   after things fall apart the vault door [TS]

01:32:15   swings open there's like a little [TS]

01:32:17   folding chair and like a tiny door [TS]

01:32:19   that's just no just because not a lot of [TS]

01:32:21   visual longer in it the fake door that [TS]

01:32:22   you have to be tipped off to the [TS]

01:32:24   screenshot of the fake doors like [TS]

01:32:25   honestly truly didn't think involved [TS]

01:32:28   with that when you have things you have [TS]

01:32:30   to close the game you have to you know [TS]

01:32:31   to make to make a person the game and [TS]

01:32:33   then it makes you feel bad like you feel [TS]

01:32:35   injustice like but i had to open that to [TS]

01:32:37   make the game progresses yeah i really [TS]

01:32:39   enjoy all of the lines when she's [TS]

01:32:41   insulting Wheatley as they're trying to [TS]

01:32:43   shut him down including just one point [TS]

01:32:46   saying you moron haha she's not happy [TS]

01:32:52   but she's so angry it's and it's weird [TS]

01:32:54   to hear glad I was angry at someone who [TS]

01:32:56   is me right it's like oh yeah you get [TS]

01:32:58   him especially when she's in her little [TS]

01:33:00   little potato voices yeah yeah because [TS]

01:33:03   using the potato yeah yeah this is the [TS]

01:33:04   physical humor of like when you're into [TS]

01:33:06   that place with all the buttons any kind [TS]

01:33:08   of see it coming by the wheels like okay [TS]

01:33:09   we just gotta find the button too light [TS]

01:33:11   so just don't touch [TS]

01:33:12   I think the thing starts going up and [TS]

01:33:13   hitting all the buttons click like that [TS]

01:33:15   that's good i mean again you don't have [TS]

01:33:17   any agency there I did first I played I [TS]

01:33:19   did look for the button a little bit i [TS]

01:33:21   mean granted it's kind of a texture and [TS]

01:33:23   you're like well I'm not gonna be able [TS]

01:33:24   to actually find a button because it's [TS]

01:33:25   not one of the mechanics game but look [TS]

01:33:26   for it briefly i also like um I like [TS]

01:33:30   that moment where you get redirected to [TS]

01:33:32   be the the chamber where he's gonna [TS]

01:33:34   smash you with all the things and Gladys [TS]

01:33:36   says oh this is the part where he kills [TS]

01:33:38   us and he says he'll ok this is the part [TS]

01:33:40   where I kill you and then the chapter [TS]

01:33:41   titles up we have a temporary kills it [TS]

01:33:43   yeah the see if steve was here he would [TS]

01:33:47   do adventure car lines for us the whole [TS]

01:33:49   for an hour you should get him to do [TS]

01:33:51   some adventure carlines you know [TS]

01:33:52   quick what's the situation oh hey pretty [TS]

01:33:56   lady named Rick so you have yourself a [TS]

01:33:59   little adventure we are again it's so [TS]

01:34:06   such a pleasure [TS]

01:34:08   remember when you tried to kill me try [TS]

01:34:12   we accept [TS]

01:34:19   the circumstance [TS]

01:34:28   that's what counts [TS]

01:34:40   these things welcome ok you in good [TS]
