11: Frankenstein Car Monster

00:00:00   I already costing blew my nose once [TS]

00:00:02   enjoy ok so i have to topic ideas [TS]

00:00:06   one of them is what I kept trying to do [TS]

00:00:08   last weekend we never got around to it [TS]

00:00:09   which is automatic and so I figured we [TS]

00:00:11   could start there if I don't have any [TS]

00:00:12   complaints or request for follow-up yeah [TS]

00:00:15   I think that's great i mean i-i think [TS]

00:00:17   the big problem with this so what we're [TS]

00:00:20   talking about for the listeners is it [TS]

00:00:24   automatic calm right as their site i [TS]

00:00:26   believe that's right and it's it's a [TS]

00:00:28   it's a set of his wife only your iphone [TS]

00:00:31   and android is both I don't know to be [TS]

00:00:33   honest I think maybe the iphone first [TS]

00:00:35   but the android coming soon something [TS]

00:00:36   anyway it's at least an iphone app [TS]

00:00:38   platform that includes a nap and [TS]

00:00:41   services that that a mimic or replace a [TS]

00:00:45   lot of premium car services such as [TS]

00:00:47   built-in navigation the roadside [TS]

00:00:50   assistance and things like that that [TS]

00:00:52   usually you have to get as part of your [TS]

00:00:53   car if you want it all built in and you [TS]

00:00:56   know we discussed previously about [TS]

00:00:58   aftermarket navigation systems versus [TS]

00:01:00   stock navigation systems and paying for [TS]

00:01:02   navigation and this looks like a pretty [TS]

00:01:04   cool alternative i guess the problem i [TS]

00:01:05   have with that or we're discussing it [TS]

00:01:07   right now is that none of us have ever [TS]

00:01:09   tried to cut some out yet right [TS]

00:01:11   you don't really know how good it is why [TS]

00:01:13   should that stop us though [TS]

00:01:15   what's wrong with you know I don't [TS]

00:01:17   really understand why this is awesome [TS]

00:01:19   and and I I want to like it but I don't [TS]

00:01:22   see what this really gets me in that and [TS]

00:01:24   I don't think that's me being the newly [TS]

00:01:26   reformed snob jerk BMW driver even for [TS]

00:01:30   the subaru I don't know what this really [TS]

00:01:31   buys me in the sense that microphone [TS]

00:01:33   already had navigation my phone doesn't [TS]

00:01:36   currently have the ability to read check [TS]

00:01:40   engine light codes or whatever which is [TS]

00:01:42   very neat so you can diagnose engine [TS]

00:01:44   problems because the way automatic works [TS]

00:01:46   is you plug this little [TS]

00:01:47   bluetooth-enabled box into the 000 BD is [TS]

00:01:50   that right on board diagnostics obd2 [TS]

00:01:52   port that's typically around that around [TS]

00:01:55   your left knee if you drive on the [TS]

00:01:57   correct side of the road as the driver [TS]

00:01:59   in anyway so you plug this this box into [TS]

00:02:02   the obd2 port it beams things via [TS]

00:02:04   bluetooth I think low energy to your [TS]

00:02:06   phone and so you can do things like to [TS]

00:02:08   see what check engine lights are being [TS]

00:02:09   thrown or what other coach being thrown [TS]

00:02:11   it will tell you how good your mileage [TS]

00:02:13   and what [TS]

00:02:13   you drive like a jerk like Marco and I [TS]

00:02:15   or if you drive like a human like John [TS]

00:02:16   and to be honest I think that is that [TS]

00:02:20   seems to be the thing that that i got [TS]

00:02:22   from their website that their most [TS]

00:02:23   excited about is telling you how to [TS]

00:02:25   drive more responsibly from an [TS]

00:02:27   economical perspective and I just don't [TS]

00:02:29   care and i know it certainly would make [TS]

00:02:32   a huge difference but I just don't think [TS]

00:02:35   that that really is is fixing a problem [TS]

00:02:37   i have in my life but maybe i missed the [TS]

00:02:38   boat I don't know what you guys glean [TS]

00:02:40   from this I i think you're right i mean [TS]

00:02:42   and yeah I guess I probably should have [TS]

00:02:44   had the website open when i made my [TS]

00:02:45   first opening statements now i do have [TS]

00:02:47   it but I'm being reminded of all this [TS]

00:02:48   stuff that yeah it does seem like I mean [TS]

00:02:51   there's a lot of other interesting stuff [TS]

00:02:53   here [TS]

00:02:53   things like the you know the the obd ODB [TS]

00:02:57   ODB is a rapper obd2 port okay isn't he [TS]

00:03:01   dead anyway there's a there's a lot here [TS]

00:03:05   and I think a lot of it could be very [TS]

00:03:07   compelling [TS]

00:03:08   so you know it has it says that calls [TS]

00:03:09   for helping a crash or how about the [TS]

00:03:11   roadside assistance kind of thing that a [TS]

00:03:13   lot of course I've built in but you know [TS]

00:03:14   it has in this app and we should say the [TS]

00:03:16   app and it's currently they say [TS]

00:03:18   pre-order the little dongle 470 bucks [TS]

00:03:21   and I guess it just includes the app [TS]

00:03:23   services for an additional charge maybe [TS]

00:03:25   or is there a subscription [TS]

00:03:26   I think it says there's no subscription [TS]

00:03:27   somewhere but yeah that is correct i [TS]

00:03:29   could change the future who knows but so [TS]

00:03:31   far it looks like it's 70 bucks one time [TS]

00:03:33   which of course is dramatically cheaper [TS]

00:03:34   than buying these things for your car [TS]

00:03:36   stock from the manufacturer in almost [TS]

00:03:39   every case is a dramatically cheaper so [TS]

00:03:41   it has stuff like that it has like a [TS]

00:03:43   find your car when it's parked kind of [TS]

00:03:46   thing like there's a bunch of services [TS]

00:03:48   like this but you're right that all the [TS]

00:03:50   stuff that uses the obd port with the [TS]

00:03:55   exception of telling me engine error [TS]

00:03:57   codes which honestly doesn't happen very [TS]

00:03:58   often so it's something it's not [TS]

00:04:00   not that useful to me all the stuff [TS]

00:04:03   about monitoring your mileage and how [TS]

00:04:05   how economically and responsible you're [TS]

00:04:07   driving i would also want to turn all [TS]

00:04:10   that off because you know i'm not one of [TS]

00:04:13   those like hypermiling hybrid people [TS]

00:04:16   like a if you if you're really into that [TS]

00:04:18   then this could be really useful to you [TS]

00:04:21   but I i think between the three of us [TS]

00:04:24   obviously kc you and I will [TS]

00:04:27   not at all be interested in that because [TS]

00:04:29   if you're interested in gas mileage [TS]

00:04:30   generally don't buy BMWs at all and and [TS]

00:04:33   certainly the way we drive them is not [TS]

00:04:36   particularly fuel-efficient know John [TS]

00:04:39   you seem like you actually care about [TS]

00:04:41   this stuff so would you actually use [TS]

00:04:43   this for your car and would you would [TS]

00:04:46   you actually care about the the the [TS]

00:04:49   mileage evaluations and telling you when [TS]

00:04:51   you're being a good driver or not [TS]

00:04:53   well it about Casey was the one who like [TS]

00:04:56   writes down how much gas he puts in does [TS]

00:04:57   all this meticulous record keeping [TS]

00:04:59   wasn't he the yes the book editor [TS]

00:05:01   sometimes at so it's obvious i don't [TS]

00:05:03   care about I don't measure my mileage at [TS]

00:05:05   all like I mean I care about it and that [TS]

00:05:07   i liked not having to fill up the tank [TS]

00:05:09   very often and you know I by relatively [TS]

00:05:13   high mileage cars but I'm not sitting [TS]

00:05:15   there figuring out what my mileage is so [TS]

00:05:17   I really care but like when I look at [TS]

00:05:20   this did I think of two things one the [TS]

00:05:21   first thing i was thinking of us would I [TS]

00:05:23   would I buy this because i mean that's [TS]

00:05:25   like that's cheap like 70 bucks you know [TS]

00:05:27   so what my wife's already got an iphone [TS]

00:05:29   so that's not like you know you gotta [TS]

00:05:30   buy an eight-hundred-dollar phone the [TS]

00:05:32   cost two thousand dollars of a [TS]

00:05:33   three-year already got that stupid phone [TS]

00:05:34   so you know it's 70 bucks right and the [TS]

00:05:37   one feature that it has that I thought [TS]

00:05:40   that she would actually use is the thing [TS]

00:05:42   where you find your car [TS]

00:05:43   that's not to imply that she loses their [TS]

00:05:45   cars in parking lots but it's just you [TS]

00:05:47   know you maybe even i would use it [TS]

00:05:49   occasionally I come out to a big parking [TS]

00:05:51   lot in pay attention to where I parked [TS]

00:05:52   it you know I didn't know the general [TS]

00:05:53   area it's nice to have pinpointed but [TS]

00:05:55   this whole website in this entire [TS]

00:05:56   product just the reason i look at it and [TS]

00:05:59   I get simultaneously excited and [TS]

00:06:01   disgusted is that like this i'm not [TS]

00:06:06   assuming it's like a start-up it's got a [TS]

00:06:07   bunch of people some good iOS [TS]

00:06:09   programmers the site looks nice the [TS]

00:06:11   shots of the UI they show you it looks [TS]

00:06:12   like looks like a nice iOS app right you [TS]

00:06:14   know we know what we know what iOS apps [TS]

00:06:17   look like these days it's like is a [TS]

00:06:18   stunned by competent people why is it [TS]

00:06:21   that these five guys here with this [TS]

00:06:24   website web designer some iOS [TS]

00:06:25   programmers marketing guide like why is [TS]

00:06:27   it that they are doing this and it is [TS]

00:06:29   car manufacturers with huge tables of [TS]

00:06:32   highly paid presumably intelligent [TS]

00:06:34   employees are not why is this not why is [TS]

00:06:36   the third party products so like there's [TS]

00:06:39   no reason every Carmen you [TS]

00:06:40   actually entire world should already [TS]

00:06:42   have something that was more than this [TS]

00:06:43   thing does like building that stupid [TS]

00:06:46   thing [TS]

00:06:46   bluetooth thing that connects to your [TS]

00:06:47   the the diagnostic port put a bunch of [TS]

00:06:51   apps on your website i mean you know in [TS]

00:06:52   case you're talking about the thing use [TS]

00:06:53   for the BMW to send the stuff or [TS]

00:06:55   whatever but like it's like they have no [TS]

00:06:58   idea what they're doing over there the [TS]

00:06:59   carmaker's you know it does not rocket [TS]

00:07:01   science here that the 5 iOS people who [TS]

00:07:03   made this application are not super [TS]

00:07:05   geniuses are just confident right now I [TS]

00:07:07   feel like this this just emphasizes to [TS]

00:07:10   me how far behind the curve all [TS]

00:07:13   carmakers are in anything having to do [TS]

00:07:15   with electronic stuff because the [TS]

00:07:16   technology is there to do so many [TS]

00:07:17   obvious things I mean who's got the [TS]

00:07:19   onstar GM is that damn thing up like [TS]

00:07:22   they're so proud of onstar and how the [TS]

00:07:24   person helps you and he's like that's [TS]

00:07:25   like I look at that it looks like [TS]

00:07:27   nineteen sixties tech looks like you [TS]

00:07:29   know pre apollo mission NASA like oh [TS]

00:07:31   great you're real proud of that and [TS]

00:07:33   everything you know we've moved on we've [TS]

00:07:34   got these pretty amazing devices in our [TS]

00:07:35   pockets could do incredible things like [TS]

00:07:37   this is an aftermarket hack sing so you [TS]

00:07:39   stupid car manufacturers you don't even [TS]

00:07:41   have to pretty smart in the freaking car [TS]

00:07:42   you need to put this little dog will [TS]

00:07:44   probably cost him 25 bucks to make and [TS]

00:07:46   then just read these in iOS app and you [TS]

00:07:47   get all these features which you may or [TS]

00:07:49   may not be interested in but I feel like [TS]

00:07:50   this should be like the baseline that of [TS]

00:07:53   course when you get your car you [TS]

00:07:54   download the app port and you get all [TS]

00:07:55   these features like of course you can [TS]

00:07:56   control the entire media center we think [TS]

00:07:58   it all your mileage information and find [TS]

00:08:00   your car when it's parking just why [TS]

00:08:01   wouldn't you have the way you don't have [TS]

00:08:03   it because car makers are pretty good at [TS]

00:08:05   making cars but terrible at anything [TS]

00:08:07   having to do with software it kind of [TS]

00:08:09   reminds me of the you know the cs worse [TS]

00:08:11   processing software thing that I roads [TS]

00:08:13   like so many products that didn't used [TS]

00:08:15   to be about software inevitably will be [TS]

00:08:18   about software and if the companies that [TS]

00:08:20   make those products don't get a clue [TS]

00:08:21   about the software someone else is going [TS]

00:08:23   to do it for them and/or we're just [TS]

00:08:26   going to be stuck with crap for a long [TS]

00:08:27   time or they're going to try to [TS]

00:08:28   themselves and and do a terrible job [TS]

00:08:30   like all these you know in car you is [TS]

00:08:32   that we talked about everything that are [TS]

00:08:33   not up to snuff so I give thumbs up to [TS]

00:08:37   the automatic guys for doing something [TS]

00:08:39   that the carmaker should have done but I [TS]

00:08:41   get funds down to the world for making [TS]

00:08:43   it that so that this has to be a thing [TS]

00:08:45   that exists as an outside third party [TS]

00:08:46   thing and we're all excited about it [TS]

00:08:48   that's how pathetic the internals of [TS]

00:08:50   cars are these days [TS]

00:08:51   yeah I couldn't agree with you more [TS]

00:08:53   about that it is [TS]

00:08:54   it's really sad that that there isn't [TS]

00:08:56   more manufacturers support and i will [TS]

00:08:58   say that that one thing that that I've [TS]

00:08:59   note that I've done with the BMW that's [TS]

00:09:01   very cool is if you have that was a BMW [TS]

00:09:05   Assist which is there knock off on start [TS]

00:09:07   I think like you said i might mention [TS]

00:09:08   this previously but they actually have a [TS]

00:09:09   very simple app or at least it doesn't [TS]

00:09:11   do much with my car but I can unlock and [TS]

00:09:13   lock the doors remotely and I can see [TS]

00:09:15   where the car is as long as with him [TS]

00:09:16   I'm within a mile of the car and it is [TS]

00:09:19   pretty darn accurate to the point that i [TS]

00:09:21   could get within a couple of parking [TS]

00:09:22   spots of where the car isn't so that's [TS]

00:09:23   pretty nice though the thing that I [TS]

00:09:25   think is kind of a Miss on automatic is [TS]

00:09:28   as a cornered and thus is a not as a non [TS]

00:09:31   regular person I i think it would be [TS]

00:09:34   really cool if they had a very similar [TS]

00:09:35   slick UI but will show you real-time [TS]

00:09:38   gauges like it's been a car with the [TS]

00:09:40   turbocharger maybe you can see a boost [TS]

00:09:41   gauge or maybe you could see oil [TS]

00:09:43   temperature something like that and yeah [TS]

00:09:45   these are the things you could do if you [TS]

00:09:47   are the actual car maker with the BF is [TS]

00:09:49   more company has to just use that stupid [TS]

00:09:51   diagnostic port which was not designed [TS]

00:09:52   for this purpose but if you're making [TS]

00:09:53   the car like you can do anything you [TS]

00:09:56   could be four sensors and you could get [TS]

00:09:58   cameras into a panorama to provide a [TS]

00:10:01   pseudo 3d view of your car relation to [TS]

00:10:03   other travelling like the stuff we're [TS]

00:10:05   talking about here it's not like amazing [TS]

00:10:07   new technology that they would have to [TS]

00:10:08   develop on their own it's like existing [TS]

00:10:11   technology used in applications that [TS]

00:10:13   people already using by or existing game [TS]

00:10:16   technology and all most of it is not [TS]

00:10:18   safety-related so you wouldn't have all [TS]

00:10:20   these sort of legal things just kind of [TS]

00:10:21   like oh nice to have I want to see my [TS]

00:10:23   old temperature i want to be able to [TS]

00:10:24   drag out a little you know gauge cluster [TS]

00:10:26   thing and stick to my you know it [TS]

00:10:28   doesn't have to be an ipod can be your [TS]

00:10:29   own screen or whatever to but I'm saying [TS]

00:10:31   like take the easy way out car guys are [TS]

00:10:32   you so you can make an iphone so you [TS]

00:10:34   can't figure out how to make a screen [TS]

00:10:36   with bluetooth and Wi-Fi and a good GPU [TS]

00:10:39   and cpu and operates sorry that's too [TS]

00:10:41   much for your fine just let us use the [TS]

00:10:42   devices we already own right some nice [TS]

00:10:44   app store you can you get five go to San [TS]

00:10:47   Francisco scoop up five people and you [TS]

00:10:49   know who know you know that UI kit and [TS]

00:10:53   give them a bunch of money like I just [TS]

00:10:56   think of all the money they spend on [TS]

00:10:57   every other part of the car making [TS]

00:10:59   process and somehow it it's left to [TS]

00:11:03   these automatic people to show them like [TS]

00:11:05   despite your best [TS]

00:11:07   Fritz carmakers we can still do things [TS]

00:11:10   that people are amazed that just by [TS]

00:11:12   sticking it stupid Don go into the sport [TS]

00:11:14   that was never designed for this purpose [TS]

00:11:15   what a lot of it i think is is is their [TS]

00:11:19   desire you know we see this a lot in the [TS]

00:11:21   electronics business it's each [TS]

00:11:23   manufacturers desire to distinguish [TS]

00:11:25   themselves through their software and [TS]

00:11:27   their features the last thing I would [TS]

00:11:29   want would be to enable something like [TS]

00:11:32   automatic on a big scale which would [TS]

00:11:34   then give the exact same luxuries and [TS]

00:11:38   the exact same features to any car [TS]

00:11:40   regardless of what brand it is that did [TS]

00:11:42   you know they don't want that they want [TS]

00:11:43   their cars to run their proprietary [TS]

00:11:46   stuff so they have an advantage over the [TS]

00:11:48   other makers of course that's what I'm [TS]

00:11:49   saying I'm saying they should they [TS]

00:11:51   should be making like they should be [TS]

00:11:52   competing on the software that comes [TS]

00:11:53   with their cars like oh I was going to [TS]

00:11:55   get you know a tard about you know the [TS]

00:11:58   the nissan has much better apps and [TS]

00:12:01   everything like that should be like when [TS]

00:12:02   you buy like a Mercedes or BMW which [TS]

00:12:04   should have awesome apps in the app [TS]

00:12:06   should be like for you know maybe maybe [TS]

00:12:08   Mercedes can have apps that only run the [TS]

00:12:10   iphone 5 because that's a reasonable [TS]

00:12:11   assumption if you're buying Mercedes [TS]

00:12:12   right whereas like the toes would have [TS]

00:12:14   to have android apps are you don't even [TS]

00:12:16   like they can distinguish based on price [TS]

00:12:20   discrimination and who's likely to have [TS]

00:12:21   a device or maybe the very little place [TS]

00:12:24   cards don't require you to have a [TS]

00:12:25   expensive smartphone and they haven't [TS]

00:12:27   been some sort of built-in screen like [TS]

00:12:28   it should be like every other aspect of [TS]

00:12:31   the car you don't get the fancy super [TS]

00:12:33   engine you don't get the nice interior [TS]

00:12:34   but when you go up to the high class [TS]

00:12:35   once I want to get awesome stuff no I [TS]

00:12:36   haven't seen these BMW apps that Casey [TS]

00:12:38   has but like I i'm just picturing in my [TS]

00:12:41   head and I'm imagining they do not look [TS]

00:12:43   even as good as these like potentially [TS]

00:12:44   just knocked up screenshots outside of [TS]

00:12:46   it [TS]

00:12:46   no not at all they're terrible yeah in [TS]

00:12:48   other words you're correct everything I [TS]

00:12:49   do not look good [TS]

00:12:50   yeah and why is that it's not just BMW [TS]

00:12:52   not have enough money to go charging off [TS]

00:12:53   for their cars like they can't afford to [TS]

00:12:55   hire you know one twenty-one-year-old [TS]

00:12:57   hipster to write their app it it's not [TS]

00:13:00   it's not rocket science we know how to [TS]

00:13:02   make apps i agree with you it's it's odd [TS]

00:13:05   in yeah I guess I wonder [TS]

00:13:07   isn't this 142 has been trying to do [TS]

00:13:09   with the my was in my ford sync or four [TS]

00:13:12   times and I've heard different reviews [TS]

00:13:14   and that some people say all this stuff [TS]

00:13:15   it's too like that's the thing people [TS]

00:13:16   just started like wow it's amazing you [TS]

00:13:19   can do it because we just so used two [TS]

00:13:20   cars being [TS]

00:13:21   way they are despite all these other [TS]

00:13:22   aspects of our life that we we accept [TS]

00:13:24   that the you know the technology has [TS]

00:13:26   made to progress or just amazed like I [TS]

00:13:29   can open the cars or visit our doors [TS]

00:13:30   remotely with app isn't that awesome [TS]

00:13:32   no that's not awesome you should have [TS]

00:13:33   been able to do that like 20 years ago [TS]

00:13:35   in fact you could with you know their [TS]

00:13:36   little remote interesting but like it's [TS]

00:13:39   where so star for features that the [TS]

00:13:41   myford touch sync stuff it's like wow [TS]

00:13:44   the only features are great and they are [TS]

00:13:46   interesting but then the other hand [TS]

00:13:47   people say the way they're implemented [TS]

00:13:48   you know they look like they were [TS]

00:13:49   implemented by my car company and not by [TS]

00:13:52   software- business this is expectation [TS]

00:13:54   gap and but even despite the expectation [TS]

00:13:57   gap I've heard very bad things about my [TS]

00:14:00   for touch but also very good things from [TS]

00:14:02   people who are just amazed that you can [TS]

00:14:04   do these things with a car before we [TS]

00:14:06   leave the automatic topic i do want to [TS]

00:14:08   point out one thing very near and dear [TS]

00:14:11   to our hearts in the driving feedback [TS]

00:14:14   section of their site it says and i [TS]

00:14:17   quote automatic learns about your [TS]

00:14:19   driving style and gives you subtly audio [TS]

00:14:21   cues when you do things that waste gas [TS]

00:14:24   like Rob breaking speeding and rapid [TS]

00:14:27   acceleration that they missed an [TS]

00:14:29   opportunity here because they should [TS]

00:14:30   have is the make you a better driver [TS]

00:14:34   mode that has nothing to do with fuel [TS]

00:14:35   efficiency has everything to do with [TS]

00:14:37   like whether your signals on signaling [TS]

00:14:41   would be one thing if you don't think i [TS]

00:14:42   was thinking of is the people who when [TS]

00:14:44   coming to a stop [TS]

00:14:45   increase the pedal of the pressure on [TS]

00:14:47   the brake pedal as the car slows rather [TS]

00:14:49   than decreasing it I this how do you [TS]

00:14:53   represent that with a subtle audio cue I [TS]

00:14:56   think what you have to do is actually an [TS]

00:14:58   acceleration grabbin see you want is a [TS]

00:15:01   nice smooth thing that is not called the [TS]

00:15:03   heads of the people in your car to snap [TS]

00:15:04   forward what you're doing is the [TS]

00:15:05   opposite curve you know it would be like [TS]

00:15:07   you know that the curve would be instead [TS]

00:15:09   of being like a you know a ski slope [TS]

00:15:12   going down it would be like a hump you [TS]

00:15:14   know that i would like a visual [TS]

00:15:15   representation of that so then you can [TS]

00:15:17   you know so how's my driving and give [TS]

00:15:19   you a star rating of like your stops are [TS]

00:15:22   not smooth or if you're learning stick [TS]

00:15:23   shift like you're not doing well [TS]

00:15:25   accelerating pc power you know that's [TS]

00:15:27   that's useful thing to do and meet you [TS]

00:15:29   can make fun and interesting different [TS]

00:15:31   ratings and people helping you to learn [TS]

00:15:33   and how to drive you could you can [TS]

00:15:34   imagine a little app helping you to [TS]

00:15:36   learn how to drive stick better but like [TS]

00:15:38   a little you know the version of Clippy [TS]

00:15:40   they're saying it looks like you're [TS]

00:15:42   trying to heel toe but you're doing it [TS]

00:15:43   wrong and then you crash you're looking [TS]

00:15:46   too much of the ball you don't have to [TS]

00:15:47   be audio or whatever that there are many [TS]

00:15:49   options for for driving everybody [TS]

00:15:52   yeah I this the the things that we can [TS]

00:15:55   just think of things on top of her head [TS]

00:15:56   like if you had access to all the [TS]

00:15:58   information that you know is available [TS]

00:16:00   somewhere inside this car you can do [TS]

00:16:02   lots of interesting things even if you [TS]

00:16:04   just like you know like RunKeeper where [TS]

00:16:05   you know you do you go on your workouts [TS]

00:16:07   and stuff why does anything you know [TS]

00:16:08   track your your roots and I maybe I [TS]

00:16:10   guess at a certain point it becomes like [TS]

00:16:12   a speeding type thing where you're [TS]

00:16:14   trying to beat your best record getting [TS]

00:16:15   from home to work and i don't know i [TS]

00:16:18   have lots of ideas let's just say that I [TS]

00:16:20   don't know all these ideas are good or [TS]

00:16:22   possibly legal but this is just you know [TS]

00:16:26   thinking about it for five minutes and [TS]

00:16:27   the carmaker's seem to not be interested [TS]

00:16:30   in pursuing any of these are doing any [TS]

00:16:32   of them well it really isn't miss I mean [TS]

00:16:36   just like you said I know people like us [TS]

00:16:39   which granted our small group inning and [TS]

00:16:41   an extremely nerdy group but if it was a [TS]

00:16:44   choice between a 335 with or without a [TS]

00:16:47   technology package or maybe it's a [TS]

00:16:49   choice between an audi within [TS]

00:16:50   unbelievably good technology package [TS]

00:16:52   with a really robust app and so on and [TS]

00:16:54   so forth and 335 which has no such [TS]

00:16:57   support i mean that the i'm nerdy enough [TS]

00:17:00   that i would think about going out e and [TS]

00:17:01   then market would never talk to me again [TS]

00:17:03   but probably you know its price I might [TS]

00:17:05   well it's funny though is like when i [TS]

00:17:07   was when i was looking for you know for [TS]

00:17:08   our next family car i considered audi [TS]

00:17:11   and i took a test drive back to back [TS]

00:17:13   almost a year ago now of a 550 versus an [TS]

00:17:18   a6 and what I found and obviously the [TS]

00:17:22   fight is a faster car because there is [TS]

00:17:24   no v 8 a-6 and they didn't have an s62 [TS]

00:17:27   test drive at the time but i liked a lot [TS]

00:17:32   about the audi driving wise like that [TS]

00:17:35   the handling i thought was a little bit [TS]

00:17:36   tighter than the standard 5-series like [TS]

00:17:38   it it didn't feel like as big of a car [TS]

00:17:40   there are things about if I liked a lot [TS]

00:17:42   however I really didn't like the [TS]

00:17:45   computer interface to it and [TS]

00:17:46   and that was before I got the rocket so [TS]

00:17:49   I had never used I Drive before so I [TS]

00:17:51   wasn't like I was just biased towards I [TS]

00:17:53   Drive I really didn't like Audi system [TS]

00:17:56   and I like I could figure out I dry very [TS]

00:17:57   quickly in the $YEAR 5 series analysis [TS]

00:17:59   system in the a6 a year ago what I don't [TS]

00:18:02   know if it's different now but i think [TS]

00:18:03   it's roughly the same it was just really [TS]

00:18:07   not my style i find it very unintuitive [TS]

00:18:09   and i found lots of things about didn't [TS]

00:18:11   work very well in my you know 20 minutes [TS]

00:18:14   of testing so who knows but like the car [TS]

00:18:17   was great in a lot of ways but it really [TS]

00:18:19   bothered me how bad that interface was [TS]

00:18:21   to these accessory features and I think [TS]

00:18:24   that only underscores John how important [TS]

00:18:26   your point is about how important [TS]

00:18:28   software is these things whereas five [TS]

00:18:31   years ago or ten years ago when I bought [TS]

00:18:32   a car [TS]

00:18:33   the they didn't have all these built-in [TS]

00:18:35   features at least one of my price range [TS]

00:18:37   student slick all these media things [TS]

00:18:39   navigation things you know they didn't [TS]

00:18:41   have those so i would have bought the [TS]

00:18:43   car based on just the car and the way it [TS]

00:18:45   drove in those kind of factors and now i [TS]

00:18:48   will base my decisions more on things [TS]

00:18:51   like software because it matters now and [TS]

00:18:53   we've come to expect good things out of [TS]

00:18:55   that now the same reason we you know [TS]

00:18:57   you're willing to buy max or even iOS [TS]

00:18:59   devices even if they don't have like oh [TS]

00:19:01   it did you know there's like an eight [TS]

00:19:02   core android phones you can take your [TS]

00:19:04   phone isn't that what software-defined [TS]

00:19:06   so much of the experience that it's [TS]

00:19:08   obvious that of course you're not going [TS]

00:19:09   to pick your phone or your personal [TS]

00:19:10   computer based solely on hardware but [TS]

00:19:13   that was not obvious you know decades [TS]

00:19:14   ago be like well I don't care what I [TS]

00:19:17   don't care that i have a das prompting [TS]

00:19:18   you have a graphical user interface but [TS]

00:19:20   my cpu as more megahertz than your [TS]

00:19:22   business [TS]

00:19:23   yeah that we grew out of that and we've [TS]

00:19:25   grown out of it with these antique cars [TS]

00:19:26   is the car equivalent is like once I [TS]

00:19:29   started to have nice interiors and stuff [TS]

00:19:31   it's like well you have this car is [TS]

00:19:32   faster but this is more comfortable [TS]

00:19:35   seats it has a more pleasant interior [TS]

00:19:36   it's it's less no easiest I'll but it [TS]

00:19:38   doesn't matter if you just care about [TS]

00:19:39   the performance figures will know of [TS]

00:19:40   course we can I care about where i'm [TS]

00:19:42   sitting on a live in a nice place and [TS]

00:19:43   software is just an extension of that [TS]

00:19:44   where you don't just pick the car based [TS]

00:19:47   on that knows the analogy was used to [TS]

00:19:49   use back in the days of the pc weenies [TS]

00:19:51   haranguing me about using a mac the [TS]

00:19:53   eternal car analogy is good for so many [TS]

00:19:55   things because people like it would be [TS]

00:19:58   ridiculous for for someone to say [TS]

00:20:00   did they choose a car solely based on [TS]

00:20:02   performance numbers because everybody [TS]

00:20:04   picks on things like like how it looks [TS]

00:20:05   like what color it is on the outside on [TS]

00:20:08   the internet see the outside when you're [TS]

00:20:09   driving like you barely see it right and [TS]

00:20:11   yet that is such an incredibly important [TS]

00:20:13   part of buying a car known whatever say [TS]

00:20:16   you can't discount how the car looks on [TS]

00:20:17   the outside of course I'm not gonna buy [TS]

00:20:19   another carbon only computer sure yeah [TS]

00:20:21   lineup is you know it's it's faster it's [TS]

00:20:23   got more memory and it's cheaper and I [TS]

00:20:24   can get a bigger hard drive and like but [TS]

00:20:27   you know people if you don't see you [TS]

00:20:28   don't see it but the cars people totally [TS]

00:20:30   accepted and I think iOS devices you [TS]

00:20:32   know or you know mobile devices people [TS]

00:20:34   accept that as well people bicone a [TS]

00:20:36   phone because it's cute right and but [TS]

00:20:38   you know since it's mostly screen [TS]

00:20:40   obviously the software factors into that [TS]

00:20:41   one cars we buy a based on all these [TS]

00:20:43   criteria that had nothing to do with [TS]

00:20:45   performance and software as it slowly [TS]

00:20:47   absorbs like the inside of the car and [TS]

00:20:49   becomes more prominent and it has [TS]

00:20:51   hopefully carmakers or maybe third [TS]

00:20:53   parties this is how it has to be but I [TS]

00:20:54   really don't like it i come to enhance [TS]

00:20:57   the experience of owning a car by [TS]

00:20:59   finally giving us the software that like [TS]

00:21:01   matches what our computers and phones [TS]

00:21:03   could do 10 years ago that will become a [TS]

00:21:06   defining characteristic that's why i [TS]

00:21:07   think it's like such as there's a [TS]

00:21:08   squandered opportunity if for example [TS]

00:21:10   honda like you know apple buys honda and [TS]

00:21:13   totally integrates you know Apple does [TS]

00:21:15   the entire software experience of the [TS]

00:21:17   car suddenly honda has become a lot more [TS]

00:21:19   attractive for not much more money [TS]

00:21:20   because it does not cost that much more [TS]

00:21:22   money to wire up the components you need [TS]

00:21:24   to let Apple go hog-wild with your honda [TS]

00:21:26   you know I mean this opportunity it is [TS]

00:21:30   and it's funny because I'm hearing you [TS]

00:21:31   talk about this and I'm thinking to [TS]

00:21:33   myself and about how I've been raving [TS]

00:21:35   about the fact that i can send address [TS]

00:21:38   to my car from my computer that you said [TS]

00:21:41   you sound like I could send electronic [TS]

00:21:43   man message exactly that's right Nick [TS]

00:21:45   and that is so impressive because it's [TS]

00:21:48   so rare to be for somebody actually be [TS]

00:21:50   implemented and work that's so rare in [TS]

00:21:53   the in the car business and and in the [TS]

00:21:55   car you know when using in using most [TS]

00:21:57   cars people having it's so rare to have [TS]

00:21:58   anything that's that technologically [TS]

00:22:01   advanced by 15 years ago standards [TS]

00:22:03   remember crying out loud what we're [TS]

00:22:05   excited now that we have aux audio in [TS]

00:22:07   and we're not even asking like actual [TS]

00:22:09   audio controls or like the ability to to [TS]

00:22:11   like you know full song from from [TS]

00:22:14   cloud-based streaming service or have [TS]

00:22:15   have an integrated itunes migration [TS]

00:22:17   talks audio in and we'll fumble with the [TS]

00:22:19   stupid ipod someplace else and some of [TS]

00:22:21   the cars have the ipod connector where [TS]

00:22:22   who now I can do next and previous track [TS]

00:22:24   on the radio controls its advanced [TS]

00:22:26   technology it's like a god they're [TS]

00:22:27   willing to but we're willing to accept [TS]

00:22:29   anything you know it's true yet because [TS]

00:22:31   you know our standards are just so low [TS]

00:22:33   in this area [TS]

00:22:35   yeah well that the car makers are are [TS]

00:22:37   failing display of its it's not that our [TS]

00:22:39   standards of my standards are very high [TS]

00:22:40   it's just that we are so used to [TS]

00:22:42   disappointment we just give it like we [TS]

00:22:44   have no faith in car makers abilities to [TS]

00:22:46   figure this out and because making cars [TS]

00:22:49   such a complicated endeavor [TS]

00:22:51   I is nothing to talk about in the worst [TS]

00:22:54   word processing software is like that [TS]

00:22:56   cars the car makers are protected by the [TS]

00:22:59   extreme difficulty of making a good car [TS]

00:23:01   because the car parts of the car is [TS]

00:23:02   really hard you need lots of expertise [TS]

00:23:05   and most important lots of experiences [TS]

00:23:06   just asked s lower you know the code [TS]

00:23:08   fisker karma or whatever always a little [TS]

00:23:10   car companies making cars really hard [TS]

00:23:12   and so it's very difficult for someone [TS]

00:23:14   to say i'm going to disrupt the car [TS]

00:23:17   industry by i'll do the software part [TS]

00:23:19   right and i just did i'll just make the [TS]

00:23:20   car part in making the car part is [TS]

00:23:22   actually pretty darn hard and cost a lot [TS]

00:23:23   of money and the barrier to entry is [TS]

00:23:25   very high so these guys are protected [TS]

00:23:27   sitting there with all of the collective [TS]

00:23:30   inability to have a clue about software [TS]

00:23:31   and like what [TS]

00:23:33   yeah we can't figure it out and we do a [TS]

00:23:34   great job but as long as we kind of do a [TS]

00:23:37   similar job to our competitors it [TS]

00:23:39   doesn't really matter that the overall [TS]

00:23:40   the average level the entire industries [TS]

00:23:42   terrible as long as we're kind of in the [TS]

00:23:44   next we're fine we don't have to worry [TS]

00:23:45   about someone who understands all for [TS]

00:23:46   coming out making a better car because [TS]

00:23:48   there's no way they'll figure out how to [TS]

00:23:49   make a decent car it's not like the [TS]

00:23:51   cellphone business in like 2003 yeah [TS]

00:23:55   well because all the other cell phone [TS]

00:23:56   makers well that was some more [TS]

00:23:58   competition there in the tech sector [TS]

00:23:59   like it's easier to make it a cell phone [TS]

00:24:01   then to make a car so dominant in terms [TS]

00:24:04   of you know it's like that experience [TS]

00:24:06   you can buy parts you know from other [TS]

00:24:09   makers and put them together and make a [TS]

00:24:10   decent phone you you can buy an interim [TS]

00:24:14   somebody you can buy a chassis from [TS]

00:24:15   someone you can kind of hobble cobble [TS]

00:24:17   together some sort of Frankenstein car [TS]

00:24:19   monster but it's never going to be [TS]

00:24:20   cohesive and your manufacturing quality [TS]

00:24:23   will be bad and your assembly like [TS]

00:24:25   this is that it is the shame of it is [TS]

00:24:28   that making cars is a very difficult [TS]

00:24:30   thing to do to make it really really [TS]

00:24:31   well and experience counts for a lot so [TS]

00:24:36   as a kind of corollary question and I'm [TS]

00:24:39   gonna ask Marco and then all answer then [TS]

00:24:41   John I'd like you to wrap it up [TS]

00:24:43   who is going to be the first [TS]

00:24:45   manufacturer to really get a clue and do [TS]

00:24:47   this well what's your guess i don't know [TS]

00:24:50   i think BMW have shown a lot of efforts [TS]

00:24:55   to be fairly progressive with like ipod [TS]

00:24:59   integration and analysis eerie [TS]

00:25:01   hands-free and stuff they're the only [TS]

00:25:04   ones but they have certainly been pretty [TS]

00:25:06   early to a lot of these things but I [TS]

00:25:08   look at their software and and again [TS]

00:25:10   like I get their software still looks [TS]

00:25:12   like it's being made by car people and [TS]

00:25:14   not by tech people and and that might [TS]

00:25:16   never change so i'm not sure it will be [TS]

00:25:18   them honestly it and another company i [TS]

00:25:23   would think of off the top of my head [TS]

00:25:24   might be well as you say toyota because [TS]

00:25:30   toyota is all is big on a lot of this [TS]

00:25:32   like good interface even though I [TS]

00:25:34   disagree with a lot of their choices but [TS]

00:25:35   they at least care alot and make some [TS]

00:25:37   bold choices about things like good [TS]

00:25:39   interfaces and you know quantifying how [TS]

00:25:43   well you're driving like the previous [TS]

00:25:44   was very early to that where you know to [TS]

00:25:48   to appeal even more to mileage conscious [TS]

00:25:50   people [TS]

00:25:51   the president has had that diagram [TS]

00:25:53   showing you how it was using energy at [TS]

00:25:55   any given moment and and for the time [TS]

00:25:57   when the time that came out at first [TS]

00:26:01   that was actually a a very advanced [TS]

00:26:03   thing to be showing in a car so you know [TS]

00:26:07   they I i would say them but Toyota is [TS]

00:26:09   also really conservative with a lot of [TS]

00:26:14   this stuff in general so I wouldn't i [TS]

00:26:17   think think they would want you know [TS]

00:26:19   they certainly wouldn't invite somebody [TS]

00:26:21   into to redesign their entire media [TS]

00:26:25   software experience like that I can't [TS]

00:26:27   see them ever doing that they're there [TS]

00:26:29   too conservative and controlling for [TS]

00:26:31   that so I'm going to revise my answer [TS]

00:26:33   and say I would either expected to come [TS]

00:26:35   from BMW seems pretty progressive in [TS]

00:26:37   this area or i would expect it [TS]

00:26:39   from an American company like maybe Ford [TS]

00:26:42   because they tend to work really closely [TS]

00:26:44   with Microsoft a lot and and I can see [TS]

00:26:48   it coming from that way maybe more so [TS]

00:26:51   than a than a predominantly not American [TS]

00:26:56   company [TS]

00:26:57   alright so i don't know obviously with [TS]

00:27:00   the answer is but i have a couple of [TS]

00:27:01   guesses I'm gonna stick with one of my [TS]

00:27:04   first thought was perhaps many and I [TS]

00:27:08   said that because they seem to be like [TS]

00:27:10   you said kind of progressive kind of [TS]

00:27:13   bubbly and fun especially for BMW who [TS]

00:27:16   depending on how you look at them is [TS]

00:27:18   arguably very stodgy but then it [TS]

00:27:21   occurred to me well if they're gonna do [TS]

00:27:23   this really cool tech thing why would [TS]

00:27:26   they do it in many yeah they could [TS]

00:27:28   probably get away with it but doesn't [TS]

00:27:29   that strike me as more of a 7-series [TS]

00:27:31   sort of thing [TS]

00:27:34   also many many is we should talk about [TS]

00:27:37   me separately able to do that to the [TS]

00:27:39   sponsor break but uh mit the way many is [TS]

00:27:41   designed internally the controls and [TS]

00:27:43   everything it's very much like the retro [TS]

00:27:45   that rotation priority and so I can't [TS]

00:27:49   imagine them revamping the interior [TS]

00:27:51   enough to accommodate something like [TS]

00:27:53   this that's actually very good . I [TS]

00:27:54   hadn't considered that [TS]

00:27:56   so I so I don't think its many my next [TS]

00:27:58   thought was just like you said maybe [TS]

00:27:59   forward since Ford is shown some promise [TS]

00:28:02   with the ford sync or whatever it's cool [TS]

00:28:04   i can't remember the name of it but it [TS]

00:28:05   doesn't matter the forward thing that [TS]

00:28:06   Microsoft did but here again I don't [TS]

00:28:09   know it seems like it's kinda [TS]

00:28:10   half-hearted maybe that's just because [TS]

00:28:11   it's microsoft microsoft has a hard time [TS]

00:28:14   doing anything progressive well but as I [TS]

00:28:17   had another word you have so i thought [TS]

00:28:20   maybe not afford and believe it or not [TS]

00:28:22   the one that I landed on that I think [TS]

00:28:24   might it is my final answer although I'm [TS]

00:28:26   going out on a limb here is what about [TS]

00:28:28   sion because sion seems to be toyota who [TS]

00:28:32   is a stodgy company with with [TS]

00:28:34   progressive flirtations if you will they [TS]

00:28:39   they used scion to do things that are a [TS]

00:28:41   little while to take the Toyota peru for [TS]

00:28:43   example which is a scion in the in the [TS]

00:28:45   united states i wouldn't be surprised if [TS]

00:28:47   someone in sion got hit with the Smart [TS]

00:28:49   stick and tried something a little wild [TS]

00:28:51   with some sort of software integration [TS]

00:28:53   and I I wouldn't i would say Sion is the [TS]

00:28:56   most likely in my own well I think the [TS]

00:28:58   problem there though is you know what [TS]

00:28:59   you said earlier about many like it [TS]

00:29:00   could be a cost thing you know I think [TS]

00:29:02   people directing something like a [TS]

00:29:05   radical new software environment [TS]

00:29:08   directing that at a at young people is [TS]

00:29:11   smart [TS]

00:29:12   however it's going to have a cost [TS]

00:29:14   premium and almost everything directed [TS]

00:29:16   at young people in the car market is an [TS]

00:29:18   economy brand so that they might not be [TS]

00:29:21   able to wait that it necessarily that's [TS]

00:29:23   at the start I would agree but also [TS]

00:29:25   consider software compared to the rest [TS]

00:29:27   of the car is fairly cheap so i don't [TS]

00:29:29   know i mean i'm not disagreeing I just [TS]

00:29:31   really don't know John will show what [TS]

00:29:33   would you say so i think this this thing [TS]

00:29:38   is revolution if it comes at all [TS]

00:29:40   I is not going to come from the [TS]

00:29:43   expensive car manufacturers which seems [TS]

00:29:47   counterintuitive is like wouldn't they [TS]

00:29:48   have the the room in their margins to [TS]

00:29:53   undergo project with this i mean i think [TS]

00:29:57   they are they do continue to try to make [TS]

00:29:59   their software better and they do spend [TS]

00:30:00   money on it but I think all of them and [TS]

00:30:04   in fact most of the existing well-known [TS]

00:30:06   car manufacturers have a problem of [TS]

00:30:10   pride they think they can do this stuff [TS]

00:30:14   like I think they have departments that [TS]

00:30:16   really feel like they are doing out [TS]

00:30:19   there at the cutting edge of car [TS]

00:30:20   interiors and computer controls and they [TS]

00:30:24   don't want to hear about this automatic [TS]

00:30:25   company where these five guys and a loft [TS]

00:30:27   somewhere made this app it's better than [TS]

00:30:29   everything we've been doing and I mean [TS]

00:30:31   like that in that video with that dude [TS]

00:30:32   you see that the video with the dude who [TS]

00:30:34   makes a little ring noises for the BMW [TS]

00:30:35   Marco of course the CNBC original right [TS]

00:30:38   right right so that guy in that room [TS]

00:30:40   that whole department that whole [TS]

00:30:41   organization those guys like it there [TS]

00:30:45   they do not want it they're not going to [TS]

00:30:47   be receptive to the to the reality that [TS]

00:30:50   they are just so far behind right so [TS]

00:30:53   that's what I think they will continue [TS]

00:30:54   to do if we make their stuff better and [TS]

00:30:55   perhaps that's how we arrived at it is [TS]

00:30:57   like them over a long long time [TS]

00:30:58   but it's not going to be a disruption [TS]

00:30:59   thing when I think about this I think of [TS]

00:31:02   it coming from i don't wanna name a [TS]

00:31:05   specific company because only specific [TS]

00:31:06   coming to make terrible cars but like [TS]

00:31:08   that's that's how disruptions work like [TS]

00:31:10   you know it was that indian company Tata [TS]

00:31:12   or something or even like some of the [TS]

00:31:14   lesser-known Korean makers of cars like [TS]

00:31:19   it's going to be an hour maybe hyundai [TS]

00:31:21   is the best example the people might [TS]

00:31:22   have heard of it's going to be a company [TS]

00:31:24   that doesn't yet have a name for itself [TS]

00:31:27   it doesn't have anything to lose and [TS]

00:31:30   it's going to be the type of thing kind [TS]

00:31:31   of like a Saturn or it where the entire [TS]

00:31:35   line of cars the entire brand of cars is [TS]

00:31:38   defined by oh those are the cars that [TS]

00:31:40   have the computer crap that actually [TS]

00:31:41   works right because it's a weigh-in for [TS]

00:31:44   an unknown car manufacturer and it's not [TS]

00:31:46   going to be on one model is not going to [TS]

00:31:47   be on the just a specific model it's [TS]

00:31:50   going to be the type of thing we say if [TS]

00:31:51   we make all our cars like this right it [TS]

00:31:53   won't add that much of the cost they can [TS]

00:31:55   still be cheap cars [TS]

00:31:57   we're just going to commit to it and [TS]

00:31:58   this is gonna be the reputation of our [TS]

00:31:59   cars it's not going to be over that car [TS]

00:32:02   when you don't have to haggle for the [TS]

00:32:03   price or that car that's kind of like a [TS]

00:32:05   Mercedes but it's as reliable as as a [TS]

00:32:07   Toyota you know like their message will [TS]

00:32:10   be its the car that does all those cool [TS]

00:32:11   computer things and they all do it if [TS]

00:32:13   you buy any account like apple stuff [TS]

00:32:14   they all do it if you buy any of them [TS]

00:32:16   you will have this good experience and I [TS]

00:32:18   don't know who that is and Hyundai's [TS]

00:32:19   probably you know has already kind of [TS]

00:32:21   done their thing and come up from [TS]

00:32:23   underneath so it's probably going to be [TS]

00:32:24   some carmaker that either haven't heard [TS]

00:32:26   of or dismissed as a maker of crappy [TS]

00:32:27   cars because remember all the Japanese [TS]

00:32:29   makers were dismisses makers of toy [TS]

00:32:30   crappy cars that fell apart and they [TS]

00:32:33   learn pretty quickly you know when they [TS]

00:32:34   eventually become honey but i think all [TS]

00:32:36   the incumbents are have too much pride I [TS]

00:32:39   mean that that's what the American car [TS]

00:32:40   companies have an advantage in that hurt [TS]

00:32:43   for a forever you know on the financial [TS]

00:32:45   ropes like almost going out of business [TS]

00:32:47   for is actually an exceptional cases [TS]

00:32:49   actually been doing well they've done a [TS]

00:32:50   reasonable turn around but when you're [TS]

00:32:52   on the ropes [TS]

00:32:53   you're more inclined to possibly partner [TS]

00:32:55   with Microsoft or whatever but those [TS]

00:32:57   partnerships like I really like you have [TS]

00:32:59   to either have like a real partnership [TS]

00:33:02   where like you become 50-percent owned [TS]

00:33:04   by apple or something [TS]

00:33:06   of course that's only gonna happen if [TS]

00:33:07   Apple's interested like that that's not [TS]

00:33:08   under your control or it has to be the [TS]

00:33:11   type of thing [TS]

00:33:12   you say you know what we're going to [TS]

00:33:13   build this expertise in-house and it's [TS]

00:33:15   not going to be a big deal because we're [TS]

00:33:16   not displacing people who have been [TS]

00:33:17   working here 50 years making the stupid [TS]

00:33:19   little dingy tone so we're never going [TS]

00:33:20   to accept the fact that they're terrible [TS]

00:33:22   at their jobs and be replaced with a [TS]

00:33:23   bunch of young people to do something [TS]

00:33:25   entirely different you know what I mean [TS]

00:33:26   it would have to be we're a small [TS]

00:33:29   company we no one knows who we are we're [TS]

00:33:31   going to build a reputation is we're [TS]

00:33:33   going to build that aren't start [TS]

00:33:33   staffing up now you know I find that [TS]

00:33:37   entire scenario very unlikely i think [TS]

00:33:39   we're just gonna continue to be stuck [TS]

00:33:40   with the crappy cars from the existing [TS]

00:33:42   manufacturers that we have now but if it [TS]

00:33:43   does happen if we have a disruption it [TS]

00:33:45   does happen i think it's going to come [TS]

00:33:46   from some company that makes cars that [TS]

00:33:49   we all hate that we think of crap [TS]

00:33:50   well what about and I I realized in the [TS]

00:33:52   middle of that block their that we've [TS]

00:33:55   been for I think forgetting about [TS]

00:33:57   something obvious what about Tesla that [TS]

00:34:01   they're already they've already picked [TS]

00:34:01   their thing and their thing is our cars [TS]

00:34:03   are electric [TS]

00:34:04   I think that's more than enough to buy [TS]

00:34:05   no but Tesla has made a dramatic very [TS]

00:34:09   progressive move in in car software and [TS]

00:34:14   and the interface 28 know we've talked [TS]

00:34:16   in the past how we don't really [TS]

00:34:17   necessarily care for how far they've [TS]

00:34:18   gone with it but i think that's that's a [TS]

00:34:21   very obvious possibility that they might [TS]

00:34:24   be the ones are showing this in although [TS]

00:34:26   they're gonna have to get a lot more you [TS]

00:34:28   know cheap mass-market models out there [TS]

00:34:30   before it can make much of a difference [TS]

00:34:32   it's hard to tell with one data point [TS]

00:34:33   because when I look at I think oh well [TS]

00:34:35   they got they got good people to do this [TS]

00:34:37   one interface but like i need at least [TS]

00:34:39   two or three to see like a line or curve [TS]

00:34:41   you know what I mean to see if it's just [TS]

00:34:43   added first of all that's excluding out [TS]

00:34:46   there big thing they're focusing on [TS]

00:34:47   focus on it's an electric car we have [TS]

00:34:48   the supercharger stations is a [TS]

00:34:50   revolution in transportation ball but [TS]

00:34:52   also focus on that all by the way it [TS]

00:34:53   also has futuristic interior if they [TS]

00:34:55   take off Tesla is completely positioned [TS]

00:34:58   to say oh we actually to staff up we [TS]

00:35:00   need to have an entire department of [TS]

00:35:02   people who just like I mean for example [TS]

00:35:03   why is there no iOS app for the Tesla [TS]

00:35:06   like that's right in the center of their [TS]

00:35:08   market you know everyone is buying that [TS]

00:35:09   thing as a smartphone right you know i [TS]

00:35:11   mean like why does not exist just it [TS]

00:35:13   looks like something that they sort of [TS]

00:35:14   contracted out to be made to their [TS]

00:35:16   specifications there don't consider it a [TS]

00:35:18   core competency of the company it seems [TS]

00:35:20   like the company is basically a battery [TS]

00:35:22   battery manufacturer [TS]

00:35:25   that wraps the car around it is trying [TS]

00:35:27   to get some expertise in cars and that's [TS]

00:35:29   more than enough to buy off at once if [TS]

00:35:31   if they succeed beyond everyone's [TS]

00:35:34   wildest dreams they will have the [TS]

00:35:35   capital to do that but i'm not sure if [TS]

00:35:37   like I always feel like you know a lot [TS]

00:35:39   of people in the old Steve Jobs thing of [TS]

00:35:41   like how can i can't i can't stop [TS]

00:35:43   talking about apple in the car show [TS]

00:35:45   I like when he went to Xerox PARC and he [TS]

00:35:46   saw all these different things are [TS]

00:35:47   networking object-oriented programming [TS]

00:35:49   the GUI and all he could see was the GUI [TS]

00:35:50   came back with a good but there was two [TS]

00:35:52   other gravity is right in front of space [TS]

00:35:53   but it's like I can only handle one at [TS]

00:35:55   once and I feel like that the people [TS]

00:35:56   running Tesla it's like electric cars [TS]

00:35:59   man and they just don't distract me [TS]

00:36:01   those that much your cars man no but [TS]

00:36:03   what about the UN not everybody will put [TS]

00:36:04   a futuristic sorry i don't know if they [TS]

00:36:05   can I don't think hold those two big [TS]

00:36:07   ideas are three big ideas or 400 are in [TS]

00:36:10   their head at once I think maybe they [TS]

00:36:12   just they just come back with you know [TS]

00:36:14   the car full of the GUI and they go nuts [TS]

00:36:16   with that and maybe take someone else or [TS]

00:36:20   maybe their second or third try to see [TS]

00:36:22   those other things [TS]

00:36:23   that's why I feel like there's there's [TS]

00:36:25   like three ideal homes in my head for [TS]

00:36:27   for like where this technology would [TS]

00:36:29   would have the biggest splash you know [TS]

00:36:32   we're like you know a big revamp of the [TS]

00:36:33   software experience in a car where that [TS]

00:36:35   we have the biggest splash and then one [TS]

00:36:37   of them is the previous which we've [TS]

00:36:39   already seen I've already said I don't [TS]

00:36:40   think too it would be that daring with [TS]

00:36:42   it [TS]

00:36:43   another one is the chevy volt which had [TS]

00:36:46   as many of those same issues Tesla has [TS]

00:36:49   which is like they have to concentrate [TS]

00:36:51   their their marketing and and their [TS]

00:36:53   differentiation if they have to [TS]

00:36:54   concentrate people's attention on the [TS]

00:36:56   fact that has such a different power [TS]

00:36:58   train than every other hybrid and most [TS]

00:37:00   other hybrids and the advantages that [TS]

00:37:02   gives you so obviously they can't really [TS]

00:37:04   afford to you know have everything be [TS]

00:37:07   focused on their software but and I i [TS]

00:37:10   don't think they actually did anything [TS]

00:37:11   impressive and I've never actually been [TS]

00:37:13   in a vault but I don't from what i [TS]

00:37:16   remember i don't think they've done [TS]

00:37:17   anything particularly noteworthy in the [TS]

00:37:19   in the software area there but and then [TS]

00:37:23   the third place I could think of would [TS]

00:37:25   be you know basically in in premium [TS]

00:37:29   sports sedans like things that upscale [TS]

00:37:32   young people buy like a 3-series RNA for [TS]

00:37:34   i can see that going [TS]

00:37:37   being a good place for it because [TS]

00:37:38   there's margin for it and people who are [TS]

00:37:41   like kind of nerdy about what their car [TS]

00:37:44   can do I think they're likely to be [TS]

00:37:47   picking cars like that if they can so [TS]

00:37:49   you'll definitely see the features and [TS]

00:37:51   those things but i really really think [TS]

00:37:53   this type of effort has to be like [TS]

00:37:55   product line wide brand wide [TS]

00:37:58   top-to-bottom every single car gets it [TS]

00:38:01   because it's not you like they don't [TS]

00:38:04   feel like they can just do it for one [TS]

00:38:05   car because yeah you're right to the [TS]

00:38:06   premium cars will continue to have these [TS]

00:38:08   fancy features but it'll just be like [TS]

00:38:09   one-offs like even the stuff in the [TS]

00:38:10   previous you know I've been lots of the [TS]

00:38:12   producers or pre / you / the florals and [TS]

00:38:14   they have interesting features them and [TS]

00:38:17   so good that they added them but they're [TS]

00:38:18   clearly features made by car [TS]

00:38:20   manufacturer like there's no there's no [TS]

00:38:23   understanding of like what a platform is [TS]

00:38:25   what a general-purpose computing [TS]

00:38:27   experience like the possibilities that [TS]

00:38:29   are there when you treat your car as a [TS]

00:38:33   computing platform and and build it up [TS]

00:38:36   in that matter all your cars I does it [TS]

00:38:38   only makes sense to do that for your [TS]

00:38:39   entire car line it doesn't you it's [TS]

00:38:41   probably not economically feasible and [TS]

00:38:43   wise to just to pilot it but that's what [TS]

00:38:45   they always do this like oh but we'll [TS]

00:38:47   put the features a high-end car and I'll [TS]

00:38:48   trickle down to the other ones and by [TS]

00:38:50   the time it gets down to my honda accord [TS]

00:38:52   it's like the worst touchscreen [TS]

00:38:53   experience entire universe because it's [TS]

00:38:54   basically technology that's from you [TS]

00:38:56   know the high-end cars from five years [TS]

00:38:58   ago which were already awful you know so [TS]

00:39:00   it's not like it has to be it has to be [TS]

00:39:03   if we're talking about some sort of wow [TS]

00:39:05   that's the car with all the computer [TS]

00:39:06   stuff that works it has to be that type [TS]

00:39:08   of thing but i said i don't i find that [TS]

00:39:10   less likely than what Mark was talking [TS]

00:39:12   about in that will just continue to have [TS]

00:39:14   slightly better stuff slightly less [TS]

00:39:17   embarrassing it does a little bit more [TS]

00:39:18   just year after year continually lagging [TS]

00:39:20   like what the rest of the tech industry [TS]

00:39:22   does but still making positive progress [TS]

00:39:24   this episode is sponsored once again by [TS]

00:39:28   Squarespace Squarespace you know that [TS]

00:39:31   they gave me a script i'm gonna ignore [TS]

00:39:32   it look [TS]

00:39:33   Squarespace is awesome and this is a [TS]

00:39:36   place where you can go and host your [TS]

00:39:37   site and that site can be a blog it can [TS]

00:39:40   be a portfolio can be your business the [TS]

00:39:42   site if you run a shop or restaurant or [TS]

00:39:44   consulting former anything you can you [TS]

00:39:46   can put all the stuff on Squarespace you [TS]

00:39:48   can put your podcast there this podcast [TS]

00:39:50   is there [TS]

00:39:50   really it's fantastic and it lets you [TS]

00:39:54   it lets you build a beautiful-looking [TS]

00:39:56   site with very little effort you don't [TS]

00:39:58   hire your own designer you can you can [TS]

00:40:00   use the built-in templates or you can [TS]

00:40:02   customize everything if you really want [TS]

00:40:03   to but were they really shine is people [TS]

00:40:07   who don't already have stock designs [TS]

00:40:09   their pre pre defined designs they want [TS]

00:40:10   to use who want to just make a website [TS]

00:40:12   and not not to like work on it for [TS]

00:40:14   months you know you can go there and [TS]

00:40:15   build something in minutes or a couple [TS]

00:40:18   hours if you really want to put a whole [TS]

00:40:19   lot into it and it's done and then you [TS]

00:40:22   don't have to know the hosting is [TS]

00:40:23   built-in if you get link to buy somebody [TS]

00:40:25   big it won't go down [TS]

00:40:27   i mean it's it's really a fantastic [TS]

00:40:28   platform so go to squarespace.com look [TS]

00:40:32   at their plans you can even sell stuff [TS]

00:40:33   now with the Commerce stuff we talked [TS]

00:40:35   about in previous episodes it's really a [TS]

00:40:38   complete all-in-one platform for hosting [TS]

00:40:41   so many different kinds of websites and [TS]

00:40:43   it's so consumer friendly as i said i [TS]

00:40:45   recommend that everybody go to [TS]

00:40:47   squarespace to build stuff like this [TS]

00:40:49   because you know people always ask me [TS]

00:40:51   where I should build my site you know [TS]

00:40:52   how do I put up a website you know [TS]

00:40:54   non-technical people a lot of times ask [TS]

00:40:56   me that and even technical people i mean [TS]

00:40:57   look I'm putting stuff there [TS]

00:40:59   it's a great place to go to checkout [TS]

00:41:01   Squarespace use coupon code neutral [TS]

00:41:04   three at checkout that's neutral and [TS]

00:41:06   three for the month of $MONTH march [TS]

00:41:07   neutral three check out will save you an [TS]

00:41:10   additional ten percent off their already [TS]

00:41:11   very affordable plans which start at [TS]

00:41:14   about 10 bucks a month so check out [TS]

00:41:16   Squarespace and thanks to them for [TS]

00:41:17   sponsoring neutral soon i still think we [TS]

00:41:21   should tell sell t-shirts on Christmas [TS]

00:41:24   we can they do allow that your [TS]

00:41:26   advertising is working on me we would [TS]

00:41:28   need to have t-shirts first though [TS]

00:41:29   but anyway we could have a content so i [TS]

00:41:34   did want to come back briefly to many [TS]

00:41:36   yeah i was gonna send you people have [TS]

00:41:38   asked us about that including somebody [TS]

00:41:39   in quality foo and the feedback a few [TS]

00:41:42   people have asked about what we think of [TS]

00:41:43   many and I have my opinions do you guys [TS]

00:41:47   want to start though like no because I [TS]

00:41:50   I'll be quick [TS]

00:41:51   I ignore me because I think the cars [TS]

00:41:53   look silly but ok moving on [TS]

00:41:55   easy enough i agree moving so I what I [TS]

00:41:59   was buying the subaru which you guys [TS]

00:42:02   adore so much [TS]

00:42:03   I actually also looked at getting a mini [TS]

00:42:06   cooper s and if memory serves at the [TS]

00:42:08   time they were so they were still [TS]

00:42:10   supercharged and turbocharged and I also [TS]

00:42:12   looked at the scion tc or whatever the [TS]

00:42:16   little coupe thing was which had like 3 [TS]

00:42:18   horsepower right I I i liked the mini in [TS]

00:42:23   principle I hated the humongous [TS]

00:42:25   centrally mounted is that the [TS]

00:42:27   speedometer in there is everything I [TS]

00:42:29   thought that was obscenely ugly and [TS]

00:42:31   stupid i like that it was a fair bit of [TS]

00:42:34   car for at the time OK money it was [TS]

00:42:37   still a little bit expensive for what it [TS]

00:42:38   was but it wasn't atrocious [TS]

00:42:40   I thought it was kind of a kind of cool [TS]

00:42:42   that it was a front-wheel-drive car with [TS]

00:42:44   limited slip differential which you [TS]

00:42:45   didn't see too terribly often but for a [TS]

00:42:48   bunch of reasons mostly size go figure [TS]

00:42:50   it the mini is actually kind of small [TS]

00:42:52   isn't that weird [TS]

00:42:53   i I didn't end up doing it in retrospect [TS]

00:42:56   I'm kind of glad because i don't [TS]

00:42:57   typically care front-wheel-drive cars [TS]

00:43:00   I don't didn't want something that small [TS]

00:43:02   even though i strictly speaking the [TS]

00:43:03   reason for anything bigger and I don't [TS]

00:43:05   know it just didn't feel like me and and [TS]

00:43:08   I've driven a mini cooper s after that I [TS]

00:43:11   never actually even got as far as [TS]

00:43:12   test-driving one when I was thinking [TS]

00:43:13   about it and i drove a $YEAR mini cooper [TS]

00:43:15   s and I believe this was the last year [TS]

00:43:17   the supercharged ones and it was [TS]

00:43:19   definitely fun and it was moderately [TS]

00:43:21   Pepe but it was nowhere near as quick as [TS]

00:43:23   a subaru the subaru while fast is not [TS]

00:43:26   marcos rocket so I liked it it was fun [TS]

00:43:30   but I I didn't feel like I had never had [TS]

00:43:33   a pang of regret by not having one and [TS]

00:43:35   that in when I see the michael that's [TS]

00:43:37   kinda cool [TS]

00:43:38   it's a mini cooper s and I guess you're [TS]

00:43:40   kind of a car person if you got the mini [TS]

00:43:42   cooper s but me I think i agree with [TS]

00:43:45   almost everything you just said i am in [TS]

00:43:47   fact maybe even everything for the first [TS]

00:43:49   time ever [TS]

00:43:49   although you would do a profit and white [TS]

00:43:51   but now i would get the the Union Jack [TS]

00:43:54   on the roof man come on i'm not kidding [TS]

00:43:58   I we looked at many for tips car i drove [TS]

00:44:01   $OPERAND min is a lot during my zipcar [TS]

00:44:03   year in Brooklyn before i discovered the [TS]

00:44:05   328i so I've driven many I i should [TS]

00:44:09   clarify these are all mini coopers and [TS]

00:44:11   now they have like 14 models but [TS]

00:44:13   I've given the mini cooper a lot and all [TS]

00:44:18   not even the cut there's a new one now i [TS]

00:44:20   think it's like $MONEY a year old but [TS]

00:44:21   the one before that address [TS]

00:44:23   overall I i really enjoyed using it as a [TS]

00:44:29   zipcar like a temporary rental any kind [TS]

00:44:31   of rental i think many is a fun choice [TS]

00:44:33   but i also not sure I want to own one [TS]

00:44:37   part of the problem is of course yes it [TS]

00:44:39   is very small that's kind of part of the [TS]

00:44:41   appeal also it does it is a fun car to [TS]

00:44:43   handle and a fun car to drive and an [TS]

00:44:45   easy car park part of the problem though [TS]

00:44:48   is just that because it is kind of bmw's [TS]

00:44:52   brand aimed at young people it's try its [TS]

00:44:56   attempts to be inexpensive in the US and [TS]

00:44:59   it really isn't [TS]

00:45:00   I it really is not a very good value [TS]

00:45:02   also it has terrible resale value so as [TS]

00:45:07   a result of finance and lease rates are [TS]

00:45:09   pretty hostile for hit and you end up [TS]

00:45:12   like you can almost lease a 328 for the [TS]

00:45:15   same price as a mini even though at [TS]

00:45:18   retail it's like it's like a 10,000 our [TS]

00:45:19   difference but you know the lease rates [TS]

00:45:22   are terrible and usually they also you [TS]

00:45:26   know reliability wise they don't have [TS]

00:45:27   very good history [TS]

00:45:29   generally speaking you probably [TS]

00:45:30   shouldn't have an old mini and they have [TS]

00:45:32   a lot of resale issues because they are [TS]

00:45:34   so incredibly customizable that there [TS]

00:45:37   are all these different paint options [TS]

00:45:38   decals and stripes and mirror finishes [TS]

00:45:41   like you you can get so many different [TS]

00:45:43   cosmetic choices which part of the [TS]

00:45:45   appeal of buying one if you want [TS]

00:45:46   something really like custom looking [TS]

00:45:47   look that looks like it's your [TS]

00:45:49   personality you have way more than like [TS]

00:45:51   the standard five colors to choose from [TS]

00:45:52   but the problem is nobody wants to buy [TS]

00:45:55   your crazy combination that you made a [TS]

00:45:58   tree Sahel so it's harder than like that [TS]

00:46:02   that's part of the damage of the resale [TS]

00:46:03   value and part of makes it harder to [TS]

00:46:04   find used ones in addition to them [TS]

00:46:06   having mediocre at best reliability [TS]

00:46:09   ratings the market for using this [TS]

00:46:10   terrible so overall they're on a very [TS]

00:46:13   good value they are though they're very [TS]

00:46:16   fun to drive and they have decent engine [TS]

00:46:19   specs for especially for their size but [TS]

00:46:21   the interiors I find are just miserable [TS]

00:46:26   I don't think that part of it is that [TS]

00:46:29   retro design we mentioned earlier you [TS]

00:46:31   mentioned had the big speedometer is in [TS]

00:46:33   the front like the window the electric [TS]

00:46:35   window switches are in the middle with [TS]

00:46:37   his ancient-looking switches like it's [TS]

00:46:39   maybe look all retro but I think in in [TS]

00:46:44   trying to achieve that it's appealing to [TS]

00:46:47   a retro image that most of the buyers [TS]

00:46:48   have never seen most most people who buy [TS]

00:46:50   menus have never been in the original [TS]

00:46:53   old British car that there but they're [TS]

00:46:55   made to look like and instead you know [TS]

00:46:59   we would appreciate things like more [TS]

00:47:01   friendly designs of the controls and [TS]

00:47:03   dials and they have chosen not to do [TS]

00:47:07   that for the most part so that's that's [TS]

00:47:09   part of the problem and the other thing [TS]

00:47:13   is just you know if for what you get [TS]

00:47:15   there are so many better choices so I [TS]

00:47:18   feel like it's a decent choice if its [TS]

00:47:21   strengths are your top priorities and [TS]

00:47:24   but know what those are its trains are [TS]

00:47:26   that it looks pretty cool from the [TS]

00:47:28   outside and it's really small [TS]

00:47:31   that's great if that's what you're going [TS]

00:47:32   for then sure consider and if those are [TS]

00:47:35   your top priorities if you if you have [TS]

00:47:38   other priorities they're like oh if [TS]

00:47:39   those just aren't that important to you [TS]

00:47:41   and you instead want like maybe a [TS]

00:47:44   compact efficient fun to drive car there [TS]

00:47:47   are other choices that are better i [TS]

00:47:48   think such as well the Toyota brew for [TS]

00:47:52   one that's that's exactly what is so [TS]

00:47:54   that's that's a really obvious choice [TS]

00:47:56   but even even like even in the less [TS]

00:47:59   sporty category you want to talk my head [TS]

00:48:04   I'm not really sure but I mean the [TS]

00:48:05   problem is like when you configure one [TS]

00:48:06   of these it ends up being almost thirty [TS]

00:48:08   thousand dollars right i mean i haven't [TS]

00:48:10   looked at like two years but when i was [TS]

00:48:12   looking it was in this warm orgasm for [TS]

00:48:14   it was kissing 30 grand or maybe even [TS]

00:48:17   just barely over a forget now it's been [TS]

00:48:19   so long but it was it was a lot more [TS]

00:48:21   money than i would have thought oh you [TS]

00:48:23   know the market is right for the right [TS]

00:48:24   kind of retro in the the Toyota biru is [TS]

00:48:29   a great example of a bit like give that [TS]

00:48:31   that's a throwback to you know that [TS]

00:48:33   their original like you know the [TS]

00:48:34   original z-cars it's a small [TS]

00:48:36   rear-wheel-drive reliable Japanese [TS]

00:48:38   sporty car [TS]

00:48:39   it's not too fast but it's fun light and [TS]

00:48:42   all that good stuff what you're talking [TS]

00:48:43   about like what are the alternatives to [TS]

00:48:44   the many-to-many is kind of a grotesque [TS]

00:48:47   version of what we used to have a lot of [TS]

00:48:49   which was the relatively cheap [TS]

00:48:52   lightweight fun sporty car not just real [TS]

00:48:55   drive but even front-wheel-drive me [TS]

00:48:56   think of the honda CRX yeah love that [TS]

00:48:59   song is old absolutely like the CRX [TS]

00:49:02   honors talk to them they will still talk [TS]

00:49:03   about like the olden board fiesta in [TS]

00:49:05   hushed tones no no one likes that kind [TS]

00:49:07   of people like that [TS]

00:49:09   oh come on this if this is a good [TS]

00:49:11   example I think the moment here is [TS]

00:49:13   something right hold following right the [TS]

00:49:14   prelude where the heck is equal to the [TS]

00:49:16   prelude used to be a staple of honda's [TS]

00:49:18   lineup but you know like the choice was [TS]

00:49:20   either you keep blowing it up like the [TS]

00:49:22   subaru until become super the super [TS]

00:49:24   light super until it becomes this [TS]

00:49:25   gigantic super-expensive bloated beast [TS]

00:49:28   that has no recognition of the car from [TS]

00:49:29   whence it came [TS]

00:49:31   or you just can it like the CRX and you [TS]

00:49:33   know they have the cr-z but everyone is [TS]

00:49:35   like no that's not what we meant even [TS]

00:49:37   the integra the integra was another [TS]

00:49:39   example is like the integra just keeps [TS]

00:49:41   getting bigger morphs into the RSX and [TS]

00:49:43   it's like it's losing you know there is [TS]

00:49:44   the market is still there i think [TS]

00:49:47   especially now for the people like only [TS]

00:49:49   the CRX is their first car maybe now [TS]

00:49:51   have a little bit more money make that [TS]

00:49:53   you know do the do the you know FRS brz [TS]

00:49:57   thing make a modern version of that type [TS]

00:50:00   of car let me out is the one that's [TS]

00:50:01   actually stayed true to it so it's still [TS]

00:50:03   small lightweight convertible that you [TS]

00:50:05   toss around that's not fast and I like [TS]

00:50:06   oh the next to me out is gonna go zero [TS]

00:50:08   to 60 in four seconds no it's not it's [TS]

00:50:10   gonna be me out i mean it's got a little [TS]

00:50:11   bit bulkier for safety reasons and stuff [TS]

00:50:13   but that the mini is like a good idea [TS]

00:50:17   not not for 30 grand you don't mean like [TS]

00:50:20   that a little fun toss around car then [TS]

00:50:23   the many reminds me of like an ugly [TS]

00:50:26   British CRX i will say maybe a good [TS]

00:50:29   alternative would be a golf actually GTI [TS]

00:50:32   is a very good call though it's similar [TS]

00:50:34   money [TS]

00:50:35   well maybe but like the base golf yeah i [TS]

00:50:37   don't know i mean it's not that's slow [TS]

00:50:39   but i think you're right i think you're [TS]

00:50:41   on the basement is slow to yeah that's [TS]

00:50:43   fair . very fair . you know I i would [TS]

00:50:46   say if i would if i had to buy either [TS]

00:50:49   the many or the golf III might pick the [TS]

00:50:51   Gulf that's and agree [TS]

00:50:53   I'm a little surprised John you didn't [TS]

00:50:54   bring up the civic I mean the civic has [TS]

00:50:56   also gotten bigger to see you soon again [TS]

00:50:57   it's true with the Civic Si was like [TS]

00:51:00   beginning of the last its stomach acid I [TS]

00:51:02   still has a little bit of credit that [TS]

00:51:03   area where it's like you want a cheap [TS]

00:51:05   car maybe like front-wheel drive [TS]

00:51:07   performance cars what the heck you [TS]

00:51:08   talking about but you know there's like [TS]

00:51:10   people enjoy them because they they're [TS]

00:51:11   cheap they're lightweight kids can own [TS]

00:51:13   them they're fun that you know that [TS]

00:51:15   they're quirky without being like you [TS]

00:51:17   know comically quirky like the mini i [TS]

00:51:20   mean i don't know i'm not gonna slam the [TS]

00:51:21   mini like if you want a car that's like [TS]

00:51:23   that that's you know it's kind of like [TS]

00:51:24   the the new beetle bug thing right that [TS]

00:51:27   they made much uglier in the new [TS]

00:51:28   revision but like if that's what you [TS]

00:51:30   want you you know it's good at that car [TS]

00:51:31   I like the fact that is it you sing [TS]

00:51:33   credit car maker that you either you [TS]

00:51:34   want no you want that you know you don't [TS]

00:51:36   want that but did I there's definitely a [TS]

00:51:40   market for cars that harken back to all [TS]

00:51:43   the things that modern cars have gone [TS]

00:51:44   away from and you have the civic has [TS]

00:51:46   gotten big and ugly and weird and you [TS]

00:51:49   know it was the silicon always kind of [TS]

00:51:50   boring but you know the SI was supposed [TS]

00:51:52   to be the exciting one even that when [TS]

00:51:54   people complain with each new sis like [TS]

00:51:55   all this isn't the SI that I want up [TS]

00:51:58   I don't want to be lighter they wanted [TS]

00:51:59   to be cheaper they wanted to be a [TS]

00:52:02   high-revving you know it's sort of like [TS]

00:52:04   the m3 actually in that the m3 gets more [TS]

00:52:06   and more bloated each year and all the [TS]

00:52:09   BMW nut jobs are always like a hawk god [TS]

00:52:11   they made the m3 heavier again and now [TS]

00:52:14   it's the m4 if you get a coupe which I [TS]

00:52:15   still don't know if I really agree with [TS]

00:52:17   but they're kind of holding the line on [TS]

00:52:19   the like I think the m3 is fluctuating [TS]

00:52:21   it's kinda like the 911 where yeah it [TS]

00:52:23   gets more modern yeah that one from [TS]

00:52:25   their cruel the water-cooled like that [TS]

00:52:26   you can't stop progress but you just [TS]

00:52:28   want to again the BRC is a great example [TS]

00:52:30   you just want to recapture the spirit of [TS]

00:52:32   the you are you don't have to match [TS]

00:52:33   expect respect and maybe it's not even [TS]

00:52:35   possible or wise and a lot of it is [TS]

00:52:37   nostalgia like you know that the noise [TS]

00:52:39   levels and comfort levels or and [TS]

00:52:41   performances all across a really [TS]

00:52:42   terrible you have fond memories of it [TS]

00:52:43   because it was a long time ago but just [TS]

00:52:45   captured the spirit of it or you know do [TS]

00:52:47   with the miata is and just carry that [TS]

00:52:49   spirit forward preserving as best you [TS]

00:52:52   can in a modern mold [TS]

00:52:55   yeah i agree i will say also to complete [TS]

00:52:58   the discussion on many there they did [TS]

00:52:59   they now have so many models that you [TS]

00:53:01   know I've been basing almost all of what [TS]

00:53:03   I said on the Cooper's that's what I [TS]

00:53:04   drove i will say though they had [TS]

00:53:06   they now have bigger ones of and one of [TS]

00:53:09   the things we looked at was I forget [TS]

00:53:12   what it's called i think it might be the [TS]

00:53:13   countryman there there's a it's the one [TS]

00:53:17   that came out like two years ago and all [TS]

00:53:18   the drive for the first time I believe [TS]

00:53:21   that's right although I'm probably wrong [TS]

00:53:22   and you can email marketing and [TS]

00:53:24   whichever one that has are have to look [TS]

00:53:26   it up whenever one of them had all the [TS]

00:53:27   drive for the first time and came out [TS]

00:53:28   about two years ago it and it the [TS]

00:53:31   problem with that one we went to go for [TS]

00:53:34   tips Carter considering that because we [TS]

00:53:35   want to drive for we want a little more [TS]

00:53:37   space than the Cooper little more [TS]

00:53:39   storage so we went to a dealer and and [TS]

00:53:43   we sat in one of the showroom and we [TS]

00:53:45   didn't even want to take a test drive [TS]

00:53:46   just having sat in the showroom that was [TS]

00:53:50   enough for like you know what this [TS]

00:53:51   interior is still terrible it's the same [TS]

00:53:53   it was the same mediocre interior from [TS]

00:53:56   the you know the base level Cooper at a [TS]

00:53:59   much higher price . it was like a bigger [TS]

00:54:01   you know I guess more upscale type model [TS]

00:54:03   and you know the interior was still [TS]

00:54:07   terrible and proportionally it really [TS]

00:54:10   looks like an SUV like it's it's very [TS]

00:54:13   it's not very many anymore like and I [TS]

00:54:15   feel like a lot of the models are doing [TS]

00:54:17   this where yes the many appeals a lot to [TS]

00:54:19   young people as a brand as an aesthetic [TS]

00:54:22   appeal of young people but young people [TS]

00:54:25   often have the beginnings of a family or [TS]

00:54:27   have to haul stuff back and forth to [TS]

00:54:29   college or something and so that's why [TS]

00:54:31   hatchbacks are so popular among young [TS]

00:54:33   people and why so many small cheap cars [TS]

00:54:36   are hatchbacks to have that kind of [TS]

00:54:38   cargo versatility and so many has tried [TS]

00:54:41   to address this by making all these [TS]

00:54:43   additional models that are bigger and [TS]

00:54:45   fatter and and have more cargo room and [TS]

00:54:48   more seating room and more doors you [TS]

00:54:50   know that they have for many for the [TS]

00:54:51   first time in the last couple years [TS]

00:54:52   never had before and I feel like that's [TS]

00:54:56   kind of messing with why people bought [TS]

00:54:59   them in the first place and so they [TS]

00:55:00   still offer the cooper and that's good [TS]

00:55:02   and they probably always should offer [TS]

00:55:03   that but i think they're over reaching [TS]

00:55:07   in in what they should be doing and [TS]

00:55:11   focusing on by having these additional [TS]

00:55:12   models because we're not doing very well [TS]

00:55:14   and like if you're in the market for the [TS]

00:55:19   big fat many with four doors I feel like [TS]

00:55:21   it's a pretty terrible contender for [TS]

00:55:23   that role and their end all the other [TS]

00:55:26   competitors to it are better choices [TS]

00:55:27   than that I mean they see they see what [TS]

00:55:30   people are buying and it's like everyone [TS]

00:55:32   else is a small SUV and you know we need [TS]

00:55:34   that we need to have a small SUV [TS]

00:55:36   I mean like when Lamborghini is making [TS]

00:55:37   an SUV you know the pressure is on for [TS]

00:55:39   like you know I mean I at least Ferraris [TS]

00:55:43   held won't help line with the 44 with dr [TS]

00:55:45   thing that I make an SUV like it you [TS]

00:55:47   small SUV sell like crazy and that many [TS]

00:55:49   knows they're never gonna make cars good [TS]

00:55:51   as the rav4 right they're not going to [TS]

00:55:52   make it you know they may not even match [TS]

00:55:54   the crv but they can make a small [TS]

00:55:57   forward or looking kind of sport you [TS]

00:55:59   thinking what does it have that all the [TS]

00:56:01   cars don't looks kind of like a mini or [TS]

00:56:03   kind of like you peel the skin off mini [TS]

00:56:05   instruction / rap for hot and so you [TS]

00:56:09   know people in the showroom [TS]

00:56:10   presently they like that bug-eyed big [TS]

00:56:13   mouth look and here's a bug-eyed big [TS]

00:56:15   mouth thing but could we get a little [TS]

00:56:16   bit bigger and with four doors and yeah [TS]

00:56:18   that's kinda I like the small suvs it [TS]

00:56:20   looks like a mini that's it's kind of [TS]

00:56:24   like I could bring up the lexus you no [TS]

00:56:26   RX 300 now 350 that became their [TS]

00:56:29   best-selling model and it's like well [TS]

00:56:31   alexis was not there nice fancy luxury [TS]

00:56:34   cars some of them are kind of sporty and [TS]

00:56:35   elegant looking and you're gonna make [TS]

00:56:37   this weird truck looking thing out [TS]

00:56:40   best-selling model and it's a bit it's a [TS]

00:56:42   business after all like and so I don't [TS]

00:56:44   know how these things are selling but I [TS]

00:56:47   don't blame them for trying [TS]

00:56:49   well i guess in summary of my many [TS]

00:56:50   opinion i think its overall a pretty [TS]

00:56:53   poor value and so you have to love it [TS]

00:56:56   for other reasons and and I and those [TS]

00:57:00   reasons are mostly aesthetic especially [TS]

00:57:02   from the exterior if you're looking for [TS]

00:57:05   other priorities in a car i think it [TS]

00:57:06   made a pretty bad choice [TS]

00:57:08   I i think i like the idea that the car [TS]

00:57:11   makers are out there like that car like [TS]

00:57:13   sob you know you either got you know [TS]

00:57:15   you're like a sob but you know you don't [TS]

00:57:16   like using credit car makers that you're [TS]

00:57:20   not like that's their whole brand [TS]

00:57:21   they're not going to make it bland [TS]

00:57:23   they're not going to tone it down [TS]

00:57:25   going to they're going to be distinctive [TS]

00:57:26   in a particular way and as consolidation [TS]

00:57:29   has happened you know as the carmaker's [TS]

00:57:31   all get owned by fewer and fewer things [TS]

00:57:32   they are starting to look more the same [TS]

00:57:34   they're all making many SUVs I don't [TS]

00:57:36   like the fact that cars are you know i [TS]

00:57:39   like the diversity maybe it's just [TS]

00:57:41   hindsight the diversity of the weirdness [TS]

00:57:44   and cars that existed when i was younger [TS]

00:57:46   i missed that in in the current market [TS]

00:57:48   and how many many as an example of one [TS]

00:57:51   still like up there's still some [TS]

00:57:52   weirdness out there's weirdness I don't [TS]

00:57:54   like but it's definitely weirdness and I [TS]

00:57:56   like that it's out there [TS]
