00:00:47   allowed sign was put on the door tonight [TS]

00:00:50   because their design was very tired and [TS]

00:00:52   had to bow out that makes us sad and we [TS]

00:00:55   blame canada because one of the movies [TS]

00:00:57   were going to discuss tonight not [TS]

00:00:58   available in canada i don't know why not [TS]

00:01:00   available in canada indian taco is not [TS]

00:01:03   in Canada and therefore is here [TS]

00:01:05   hi Andy hey Jason that if we're gonna be [TS]

00:01:11   pipe okay did not know let's just see [TS]

00:01:14   what happens [TS]

00:01:15   it'd be it'd be a shame if we got like [TS]

00:01:17   90 minutes of beautiful stellar stuff [TS]

00:01:19   and then poof just like related [TS]

00:01:21   Magnificent Ambersons all over again [TS]

00:01:23   oh I don't think there's much risk it [TS]

00:01:26   now you might think that me and the [TS]

00:01:29   three people have already introduced [TS]

00:01:31   would be really enough people to fill [TS]

00:01:33   this very small stateroom that were in [TS]

00:01:36   and you'd be right so let's but but in [TS]

00:01:39   fact bring it in bring it on in David [TS]

00:01:41   Laura come on in with whatever you're [TS]

00:01:42   bringing come on into the stateroom it's [TS]

00:01:44   good to have on [TS]

00:01:44   Oh huh make that five all days I yeah [TS]

00:01:51   yep and Amanda she can do this the whole [TS]

00:01:54   podcast broccoli and I and the [TS]

00:01:57   impresario of the old movie club your [TS]

00:02:00   your your master of ceremonies it is [TS]

00:02:03   Philip Michaels hello hello how are you [TS]

00:02:05   tonight I'm doing just fine how are you [TS]

00:02:08   I'm okay I'm okay alright just okay yeah [TS]

00:02:13   little bit sleepy little bit sleepy very [TS]

00:02:16   sleepy trying to keep the any energy of [TS]

00:02:18   energy and I and I hope our listeners in [TS]

00:02:20   Canada have turned off the podcast [TS]

00:02:22   because it's not for you appearance [TS]

00:02:24   no no one must know about the Marx [TS]

00:02:27   Brothers anyway are our topic tonight is [TS]

00:02:30   the Marx Brothers and the reason i [TS]

00:02:31   wanted to do this [TS]

00:02:32   toward the end of the year is because of [TS]

00:02:34   a tradition that that Philip Michaels [TS]

00:02:37   that you you have and actually passed on [TS]

00:02:39   to me and now and now this happens in [TS]

00:02:43   our family to wear where there's a [TS]

00:02:45   ritualistic playing of the Marx Brothers [TS]

00:02:47   film duck soup around about New Year's [TS]

00:02:51   Eve can you explain a little bit about [TS]

00:02:54   how that came about because we're we're [TS]

00:02:56   going to talk about duck soup and we're [TS]

00:02:58   going to talk about a night at the opera [TS]

00:02:59   and we're going to more generally talk [TS]

00:03:01   about the Marx Brothers in this end of [TS]

00:03:03   the year edition so on when I was a when [TS]

00:03:06   I was elite well a wee lad growing up in [TS]

00:03:09   Southern California channel 5 KTLA or [TS]

00:03:13   killa as well call it from here on out [TS]

00:03:15   its law so every New Year's Eve channel [TS]

00:03:18   5 down in LA or at least for New Year's [TS]

00:03:21   Eves when I was a lad they would show [TS]

00:03:23   Marx Brothers movies and probably [TS]

00:03:26   because they were very cheap to air it [TS]

00:03:29   was a very cheap tvs it's a very cheap [TS]

00:03:32   TV station and the one that I most ring [TS]

00:03:36   true to me as a youngster probably [TS]

00:03:38   because the air did have an hour in [TS]

00:03:39   which I was actually awake on New Year's [TS]

00:03:41   Eve was a duck soup and the movie itself [TS]

00:03:44   has nothing to do whatsoever with new [TS]

00:03:47   years even yet subsequently I just [TS]

00:03:49   associated with that holiday and I am [TS]

00:03:52   watch that and other movies on on New [TS]

00:03:55   Year's Eve rather than go out and revel [TS]

00:03:57   with other people because as the the man [TS]

00:04:01   once said hell is other people yeah and [TS]

00:04:03   i would rather just watch movies yeah [TS]

00:04:04   yeah so so what do you think should we [TS]

00:04:06   start with our super we started let's [TS]

00:04:08   let's start with duck soup on the [TS]

00:04:10   earlier the DSP relievers yes this is [TS]

00:04:12   the their last movie that they did with [TS]

00:04:14   paramount which will be important once [TS]

00:04:17   we get to the the Night at the Opera [TS]

00:04:19   portion of this conversation but duck [TS]

00:04:21   soup [TS]

00:04:23   is stars all four of the Marx Brothers [TS]

00:04:25   including the the the little remembered [TS]

00:04:30   Zeppo and it's a it's set in the [TS]

00:04:33   mythical country of fredonia which is [TS]

00:04:35   going through a tough time I'm [TS]

00:04:37   recounting the plot like it actually [TS]

00:04:38   matters you're about done yes wait [TS]

00:04:41   there's a plot [TS]

00:04:42   yeah no it'll take me about a minute if [TS]

00:04:44   we without interruptions anyhow for [TS]

00:04:46   doughnut locks for dad for johnny is on [TS]

00:04:48   the rocks they apparently are entirely [TS]

00:04:51   funded by wealthy patron efforts because [TS]

00:04:55   I be the the great market to mod who is [TS]

00:04:58   mrs. Teasdale and she demands that Rufus [TS]

00:05:01   T Firefly be named the leader for donia [TS]

00:05:04   Rufus T Firefly is of course Groucho now [TS]

00:05:07   there's an rival country called sylvania [TS]

00:05:09   that are very much like to take over her [TS]

00:05:11   don't ya i love i look and i just [TS]

00:05:12   mentioned that i love that [TS]

00:05:13   sylvania is every time I laugh when they [TS]

00:05:15   announced that because I imagined that [TS]

00:05:17   their main exporter light bulbs yes in [TS]

00:05:20   the original draft here is that here's a [TS]

00:05:21   little fun fact it was apparently the [TS]

00:05:23   country of amnesia and so that they are [TS]

00:05:28   the the main sylvanian is ambassador [TS]

00:05:30   ambassador Trentino trentino played by [TS]

00:05:34   lee calhoun was actually a really [TS]

00:05:37   accomplished actor he goes on to do a [TS]

00:05:39   lot of things he plays julius caesar in [TS]

00:05:41   the Marlon Brando julius caesar ii he's [TS]

00:05:43   in asphalt jungle and blackboard jungle [TS]

00:05:46   and other movies without jungle in the [TS]

00:05:48   title [TS]

00:05:48   easy easy he's quite a good dramatic and [TS]

00:05:52   comedic actor and you you get to see the [TS]

00:05:53   comedy on display here anyhow he's [TS]

00:05:55   trying to subvert democracy such a [TS]

00:05:59   person is no donors there's no democracy [TS]

00:06:02   it it's basically from mrs. Teasdale say [TS]

00:06:05   so and she's crazy [TS]

00:06:07   so so was was mrs. Teasdale's husband [TS]

00:06:10   sort of the rich benefactor of fredonia [TS]

00:06:12   is that is one at one assumes hear that [TS]

00:06:15   it back story James Franco will play him [TS]

00:06:18   in a prequel with that the only [TS]

00:06:21   backstory i care about is how the hell [TS]

00:06:23   she decided that Rufus T Firefly would [TS]

00:06:24   make a good eater for the country haha [TS]

00:06:26   yeah there's no explanation of that one [TS]

00:06:28   characteristic of Margaret Dumont is [TS]

00:06:30   that she's always in love with Groucho [TS]

00:06:32   no matter who he is or how horribly he [TS]

00:06:34   treats her [TS]

00:06:35   yeah actually sweet on him [TS]

00:06:36   and so she wants to have him take this [TS]

00:06:38   job because she's sweet on him and [TS]

00:06:40   that's that's that's nice [TS]

00:06:42   evolving terrible for the people of [TS]

00:06:44   fredonia and so the ambassador of [TS]

00:06:49   sylvania enlist the help of two spies [TS]

00:06:52   chucklino and pinky are you go and [TS]

00:06:55   purple marks and they change sides about [TS]

00:06:58   20 times during the BS the girls so [TS]

00:07:00   they're so chicolini is a because he's [TS]

00:07:05   it's not chico it's chico apparently and [TS]

00:07:08   so you know we all call him chico but [TS]

00:07:10   he's chico and so then I was like oh [TS]

00:07:12   chicolini that's perfect pinky I have no [TS]

00:07:14   explanation for its because harpos hair [TS]

00:07:16   is supposed to be red [TS]

00:07:17   ok sorry I'm colorblind and also is in [TS]

00:07:21   black and white [TS]

00:07:21   yeah well you know what color Lucille [TS]

00:07:23   Ball's hair was right [TS]

00:07:25   yeah but I saw the ones that she was in [TS]

00:07:27   that were in color so that was just [TS]

00:07:29   explaining these all right Thank you [TS]

00:07:31   Thank You Monty things that period [TS]

00:07:32   between fredonia and sylvania one of the [TS]

00:07:35   things I really like about this is how [TS]

00:07:37   fast duck soup moves that it is [TS]

00:07:38   yeah it it it doesn't care to make sense [TS]

00:07:41   of things and I actually kind of love [TS]

00:07:43   that at the beginning that first scene [TS]

00:07:45   is like well if you want my money you've [TS]

00:07:47   got to put Rufus T Firefly in charge and [TS]

00:07:49   everybody's like but ok cut to this is a [TS]

00:07:52   seasoned minute movie it is they do not [TS]

00:07:54   waste any time they they get work they [TS]

00:07:57   say that you're in but the entire first [TS]

00:07:59   six minutes is almost wasted time you [TS]

00:08:01   have internet i remembered radicals in [TS]

00:08:04   drag down right away but Zeppo has a [TS]

00:08:06   song before graph shows there's a [TS]

00:08:08   there's a full six minutes with Neri [TS]

00:08:10   laughs from the from the opening credits [TS]

00:08:12   to when Groucho finally makes his [TS]

00:08:14   entrance there's well you got it you got [TS]

00:08:16   to have your setup you got it well that [TS]

00:08:18   I mean come on six minutes set up for a [TS]

00:08:19   60-minute movie [TS]

00:08:21   check your said field i have and wow [TS]

00:08:26   there but they're waiting for the clock [TS]

00:08:27   to strike 10 because very exciting [TS]

00:08:29   things are going to happen a clock [TS]

00:08:30   strikes ten as the song says and and [TS]

00:08:32   then they play the hill for DoDEA song [TS]

00:08:34   like a given begin again hoping that [TS]

00:08:36   something will happen i find this that [TS]

00:08:37   we've gotta get simple something to do [TS]

00:08:39   so he doesn't quit the act part that [TS]

00:08:41   didn't work [TS]

00:08:42   you know I never [TS]

00:08:42   as a movie on those last-minute yeah in [TS]

00:08:44   this movie he doesn't even have a [TS]

00:08:46   romance which i find fascinating he [TS]

00:08:48   plays out hehe as Groucho secretary yes [TS]

00:08:51   if for those of you keeping score at [TS]

00:08:54   home and his name is Bob said he sent a [TS]

00:08:58   letter to my dentist [TS]

00:08:59   there's a theory in the last episode was [TS]

00:09:01   secretly a brilliant comedian and he's [TS]

00:09:03   parodying straight men and always rolls [TS]

00:09:06   if he is this is his best performance if [TS]

00:09:10   you read the various Marx Brothers [TS]

00:09:12   biographies apparently off-screen he was [TS]

00:09:14   he was just the naturally funniest Tom [TS]

00:09:17   but he never really developed a [TS]

00:09:19   character because he was he replaced his [TS]

00:09:22   brother gumbo in the act [TS]

00:09:24   get it in the the vaudeville act got mo [TS]

00:09:27   apparently wasn't too into it when he [TS]

00:09:30   was apparent when he was drafted into [TS]

00:09:31   world war one he said anything's better [TS]

00:09:33   than being an actor and coffee when and [TS]

00:09:37   Zeppo who was the youngest of the the [TS]

00:09:39   brothers uh could sing a bit and and and [TS]

00:09:42   apparently filled in a lot for the for [TS]

00:09:45   the other brothers when they couldn't do [TS]

00:09:47   parts but anyhow here he's he's ill use [TS]

00:09:51   likes it or not really used at no but I [TS]

00:09:55   as I was saying conditions devolved [TS]

00:09:57   between fredonia and sylvania and war [TS]

00:10:00   breaks out and really this is all just a [TS]

00:10:02   thin excuse for the Marx Brothers to to [TS]

00:10:05   do there there little bits whether it's [TS]

00:10:07   a the physical comedy of Harpo or [TS]

00:10:10   whether it's the the interplay between [TS]

00:10:13   chico and and and Groucho and and [TS]

00:10:17   Groucho pitching woo to market to mod [TS]

00:10:20   while simultaneously insulting her and [TS]

00:10:22   there's a there's a couple of really [TS]

00:10:23   good I i enjoy the musical numbers some [TS]

00:10:26   some people may disagree but I i said [TS]

00:10:30   earlier today on twitter that duck soup [TS]

00:10:32   i think is my favorite comedy and and I [TS]

00:10:35   stand by that I think it holds up really [TS]

00:10:37   well for a movie that's doing math in my [TS]

00:10:40   head now 80 usual one now 81 years old [TS]

00:10:43   yeah you know I was going to compare [TS]

00:10:44   this when we get to night at the opera [TS]

00:10:47   the the songs in this I like the songs [TS]

00:10:50   in this too I like the clock strikes ten [TS]

00:10:52   i like the repeated help Adonia i really [TS]

00:10:55   love Groucho's [TS]

00:10:56   song you know wait til I get through [TS]

00:10:58   with it how he's going to destroy the [TS]

00:10:59   design life one of my favorite [TS]

00:11:01   graduation songs that and whatever it is [TS]

00:11:03   I'm against it from horsefeathers I [TS]

00:11:06   think those are those are grouches two [TS]

00:11:08   greatest musical numbers [TS]

00:11:10   yeah I'm waiting I'm pausing for someone [TS]

00:11:12   to dispute that I'm sure money money and [TS]

00:11:14   he will have local 121 good moment about [TS]

00:11:17   the circus Lydia oh well that's true i [TS]

00:11:21   feel obliged to put in for Captain [TS]

00:11:24   Spaulding I think it's a really fun song [TS]

00:11:25   know the goods not better than whatever [TS]

00:11:27   it is I'm against it but it's a fun song [TS]

00:11:29   and I i really i really love the musical [TS]

00:11:32   number at the end the Fredonia is going [TS]

00:11:34   to war song we got guns [TS]

00:11:36   yeah I only have two let's go out it's [TS]

00:11:38   uncomfortable but I i think that there's [TS]

00:11:43   a clever bit of political commentary [TS]

00:11:45   going on there about nationalism I think [TS]

00:11:48   and I it's done in a really fun way and [TS]

00:11:52   it's it's got them playing a drum solo [TS]

00:11:55   on the helmet of soldiers and and it's [TS]

00:11:59   it's fun yeah move it is not every movie [TS]

00:12:02   it's it's nice to have a movie that's [TS]

00:12:05   fun to watch and zips along and six [TS]

00:12:09   minutes of us setup notwithstanding from [TS]

00:12:11   there you go baby go [TS]

00:12:13   that's where you're winding the little [TS]

00:12:14   car up and then you let go and it is it [TS]

00:12:16   hot rod taking off after you want it and [TS]

00:12:19   I don't know [TS]

00:12:20   again not knowing a lot about the [TS]

00:12:22   history of this is obviously many of you [TS]

00:12:24   do I can't decide whether how much of [TS]

00:12:28   this is sort of skating and and and [TS]

00:12:32   brutal criticism of the way that [TS]

00:12:35   governments work and the way that [TS]

00:12:36   they've read in a war and people died [TS]

00:12:38   and how much of it is sort of well it's [TS]

00:12:40   a it's a thing to hang our our silliness [TS]

00:12:43   off of because from the perspective of [TS]

00:12:45   80 years later I am surprised pleasantly [TS]

00:12:48   at how kind of you know straightforward [TS]

00:12:53   they are about about ripping into the [TS]

00:12:56   way that governments treat their people [TS]

00:12:57   I it baby it amazes me [TS]

00:13:00   I mean I know this is a lot of times we [TS]

00:13:02   get the perspective that that films are [TS]

00:13:04   sort of whitewashed and and simplified [TS]

00:13:06   and and I think that actually came later [TS]

00:13:08   in the history [TS]

00:13:09   30 film this but I just everytime [TS]

00:13:11   everytime i see this movie I am I I [TS]

00:13:13   think it's kind of breathtaking about [TS]

00:13:15   how I how political it is and how [TS]

00:13:18   anti-establishment it is it's it love it [TS]

00:13:21   there's that famous Groucho quote where [TS]

00:13:24   whenever someone would bring up the [TS]

00:13:25   political savvy of the movie he would [TS]

00:13:28   just sort of roll his eyes and say what [TS]

00:13:30   we were just for just trying to get a [TS]

00:13:32   laugh but right proud graduate said a [TS]

00:13:34   lot of things that Groucho was a master [TS]

00:13:38   of deflection I think I i think there [TS]

00:13:40   was um I i think there was a bit of some [TS]

00:13:44   subversiveness to this movie which is [TS]

00:13:46   why it holds up really well for a for a [TS]

00:13:50   movie that's eight decades old [TS]

00:13:52   I think the political aspects were [TS]

00:13:54   probably inevitable because they just [TS]

00:13:56   made horsefeathers where the joke is [TS]

00:13:58   what if they're in charge of a college [TS]

00:14:00   and what well now we just turn it up now [TS]

00:14:03   their charge of a country but that [TS]

00:14:05   doesn't mean they have to go to war and [TS]

00:14:07   deliberately wear different uniforms in [TS]

00:14:09   every scene that's what that is a great [TS]

00:14:11   visual children that should also points [TS]

00:14:14   to like how different this is from all [TS]

00:14:15   the later MGM movies because this is [TS]

00:14:18   definitely this is definitely one in [TS]

00:14:19   which you can have a gag in which [TS]

00:14:21   Groucho is completely unaware that the [TS]

00:14:24   mirror separating gantu runs and broken [TS]

00:14:27   and that this three-dimensional image [TS]

00:14:29   looking back is actually another person [TS]

00:14:31   they could take that they can think what [TS]

00:14:33   they could make an exchange they could [TS]

00:14:34   walk break through the plane and it's [TS]

00:14:36   it's just a game that we're playing that [TS]

00:14:38   as soon as one of them fails to do the [TS]

00:14:39   other thing you've got the other person [TS]

00:14:41   then you can legally buy madonia rules [TS]

00:14:43   now sees them as a spy [TS]

00:14:45   yes there are other movies where you [TS]

00:14:47   can't you can't do that there's [TS]

00:14:48   somewhere [TS]

00:14:49   yes you can its cartoon physics notes [TS]

00:14:52   it's like I love it 630 that's there's [TS]

00:14:54   so many like rules of comedy that way [TS]

00:14:57   we're just like is it really is almost [TS]

00:14:59   like that's part of the social contract [TS]

00:15:01   in this movie like when like a like when [TS]

00:15:03   Harper on Chico are having that fight [TS]

00:15:06   with the lemonade vendor outside and [TS]

00:15:09   it's such a plastic thing we're now we [TS]

00:15:11   all understand what the rules are [TS]

00:15:13   first I do something to you and then I [TS]

00:15:15   wait patiently while you do something to [TS]

00:15:17   me i'm not going to i'm not going to [TS]

00:15:19   stop you from taking the hat off my head [TS]

00:15:21   and sing something [TS]

00:15:22   fire to it that would be wrong that [TS]

00:15:24   would not be supported in the book [TS]

00:15:28   Groucho Harpo chico and sometimes eppo [TS]

00:15:30   by Joe adamson which is a great look at [TS]

00:15:32   the market others whole career he makes [TS]

00:15:35   the point that especially in duck soup [TS]

00:15:37   the Marx Brothers deliberately make [TS]

00:15:39   things harder for themselves [TS]

00:15:41   just out of pure perversity like Groucho [TS]

00:15:45   could just reach out and see if there's [TS]

00:15:48   a mirror there but nope he's gonna dance [TS]

00:15:50   around because that's more fun when [TS]

00:15:53   Chico and her people have to break into [TS]

00:15:54   a house they break in they break back [TS]

00:15:56   out they break back in again just for [TS]

00:15:58   the fun of that this whole seen the [TS]

00:16:01   breaking into the house scene would take [TS]

00:16:03   forever in a Laurel and Hardy movie [TS]

00:16:05   because they be unable to get past the [TS]

00:16:07   door but the Marx Brothers it makes no [TS]

00:16:12   difference to them what the rules are [TS]

00:16:13   that are just do whatever they want [TS]

00:16:15   they'll get caught because it's more fun [TS]

00:16:17   that way like a monkey business when [TS]

00:16:20   they're trying to get past the customs [TS]

00:16:22   people it's clearly possible for them to [TS]

00:16:24   do it anytime they want [TS]

00:16:26   yeah too much work yeah I i want to talk [TS]

00:16:29   about the mirror scene because i don't [TS]

00:16:32   know i haven't sat down and thought [TS]

00:16:35   about my favorite scenes ever in [TS]

00:16:37   comedies but boy that has been cracked [TS]

00:16:38   the top five [TS]

00:16:39   yeah because I I easy I i think i've [TS]

00:16:43   watched duck soup [TS]

00:16:45   well I but I'm 42 years old i'm going to [TS]

00:16:47   say at least three dozen times in my [TS]

00:16:49   life and there is not a time that I've [TS]

00:16:52   watched it that i don't i don't crack up [TS]

00:16:55   at the mirror scene I know what's coming [TS]

00:16:56   and it's fantastic and I finally showed [TS]

00:16:59   it to my daughter who's 4 years old [TS]

00:17:01   just this week and and and she laughed [TS]

00:17:05   hysterically and and talks about it [TS]

00:17:07   because it's it's great and then let's [TS]

00:17:10   ruin it for the people listening who who [TS]

00:17:12   haven't seen it it's basically a spoiler [TS]

00:17:15   spoiler for a two-year-old movie [TS]

00:17:18   yeah that is the subject of the podcast [TS]

00:17:20   you've chosen to listen to radio exactly [TS]

00:17:22   everyone everyone is uh all of the Marx [TS]

00:17:27   Brothers except for Zeppo are in mrs. [TS]

00:17:29   Teasdale sounds [TS]

00:17:31   and they've all disguised themselves as [TS]

00:17:32   Groucho except for graduate who is [TS]

00:17:34   currently Groucho and that trying to get [TS]

00:17:37   the plans for war and there's a great [TS]

00:17:40   bit with a UH Harpo confusing a radio [TS]

00:17:44   with a safe and he turns on the radio [TS]

00:17:46   and it can't turn it off even after he [TS]

00:17:49   smacks into pieces and still making it [TS]

00:17:51   so it's going on my god it's so many of [TS]

00:17:54   these 0 that window these bits that came [TS]

00:17:57   from the Marx Brothers I saw so many [TS]

00:17:59   times over and over again in Bugs Bunny [TS]

00:18:02   cartoon we have years without realizing [TS]

00:18:04   that they had originated years ago in [TS]

00:18:06   the Marx Brothers absolutely lifted [TS]

00:18:09   explore stuff i think i've seen the [TS]

00:18:11   mirror thing three or four times and [TS]

00:18:12   Warner Brothers cartoon as well and so [TS]

00:18:15   so Harpo panics and runs into a mirror [TS]

00:18:17   and breaks the mirror and Groucho [TS]

00:18:18   finally is is convinced to go look at [TS]

00:18:22   all this commotion and its species [TS]

00:18:24   basically Harpo dresses him and assume [TS]

00:18:26   so it's my reflection and they do a [TS]

00:18:28   whole series of actions and and that the [TS]

00:18:32   the crowning moment is when Groucho [TS]

00:18:34   doesn't elaborate dance maneuver and [TS]

00:18:36   spins around hoping our can't even be [TS]

00:18:38   bothered to spend just sticks his arms [TS]

00:18:41   like he's really does the flourish at [TS]

00:18:43   the end of that is are you kids graduate [TS]

00:18:46   can't see because he's facing the wrong [TS]

00:18:47   way why should I bother that single [TS]

00:18:49   gesture that single gesture is my [TS]

00:18:52   favorite single thing in any movie ever [TS]

00:18:55   I quite liked the bit where Groucho [TS]

00:18:58   tries to trip him up by picking up a hat [TS]

00:19:00   ok and and and Harpo on the other side [TS]

00:19:03   of the mirror doesn't have that same hat [TS]

00:19:05   so he's got a different head and they [TS]

00:19:08   they sort of walk around each other as [TS]

00:19:10   Groucho is trying to get a look at the [TS]

00:19:11   Hat yes walking through with the mirror [TS]

00:19:13   with you what right do they make it walk [TS]

00:19:16   through the plane of the mirror [TS]

00:19:17   three-dimensional learned at the end the [TS]

00:19:19   CUDA grass is is grouchy flips it up [TS]

00:19:22   onto his head and the hat has somehow [TS]

00:19:25   changed that Harpo had into the same hat [TS]

00:19:28   graduate had somewhere in the process of [TS]

00:19:30   that and it ends up being a perfect [TS]

00:19:32   reflection you forgot you forgot one of [TS]

00:19:34   the funniest parts of that we're Harper [TS]

00:19:35   like drops had Groucho like picks up [TS]

00:19:37   cancer 20 yeah yeah yeah thank you [TS]

00:19:40   that's okay that part doesn't break it [TS]

00:19:42   into account when he saw the Hat [TS]

00:19:44   behind her post back it doesn't count [TS]

00:19:46   that Harpo is dissolving into silent [TS]

00:19:48   laughter right in front of him [TS]

00:19:49   no wonder those count ok it's only when [TS]

00:19:52   chica wanders into the shot that the [TS]

00:19:54   same wait a minute jig is up [TS]

00:19:56   that is yeah that is a spectacular thing [TS]

00:19:58   and it's and silent completely and [TS]

00:20:01   absolutely silent once you've accepted [TS]

00:20:03   the fact that there is an identical room [TS]

00:20:05   behind the mirror you can pretty much [TS]

00:20:08   except anything [TS]

00:20:09   yeah well see that visit this is why for [TS]

00:20:11   donations in such financial straits they [TS]

00:20:13   make certain concessions every room [TS]

00:20:15   facing every other room is the mirror [TS]

00:20:17   and bring it with style even kim jang [TS]

00:20:19   hoon doesn't do that stuff and that's a [TS]

00:20:21   pretty rare seen by the way because [TS]

00:20:23   Groucho and Harpo don't pair off that [TS]

00:20:25   often [TS]

00:20:26   right now they do not yeah Chico is the [TS]

00:20:29   link between them [TS]

00:20:30   hmm yeah it's not enough is written [TS]

00:20:33   about just how terrible country for Tony [TS]

00:20:35   yes from we've already talked about the [TS]

00:20:39   The Millionaire heiress like deciding [TS]

00:20:42   who gets to be the ruler but you can [TS]

00:20:44   pick cabinet ministers who are selling [TS]

00:20:46   peanuts outside your window you can you [TS]

00:20:49   can do all sorts of terrible things it's [TS]

00:20:51   there's apparently some sort of lemonade [TS]

00:20:53   shortage because there's like a [TS]

00:20:54   20-person line at the guys lemonade card [TS]

00:20:56   it's a very popular Lemonade Stand he's [TS]

00:20:58   he really he has the artisanal uh [TS]

00:21:01   address of the the native fredonia ins [TS]

00:21:03   so it is it is apparently it's entirely [TS]

00:21:06   possible that a financial bailout is not [TS]

00:21:08   going to rescue this government that may [TS]

00:21:11   or may be one of those moods where those [TS]

00:21:13   too-big-to-fail sort of things it in the [TS]

00:21:16   real world President Johnson would have [TS]

00:21:18   sent in like an exploratory force and [TS]

00:21:20   set up a puppet government and how that [TS]

00:21:22   would enable fredonia declared a society [TS]

00:21:25   and chaos and install the colonial [TS]

00:21:26   government but you said the dude with [TS]

00:21:28   the old british way that's actually one [TS]

00:21:31   of the things that I appreciate about [TS]

00:21:32   this movie is that it is populated by by [TS]

00:21:36   American actors and other other people [TS]

00:21:39   that we would see is our people in it as [TS]

00:21:41   a member of the United States seeing [TS]

00:21:43   these people in in these little [TS]

00:21:44   country's going to war with each other i [TS]

00:21:46   like that i like i like that thing that [TS]

00:21:49   it's not like the US and canada or [TS]

00:21:51   something like that it's putting it and [TS]

00:21:53   it's very easy for you as a person in [TS]

00:21:56   the united states especially to say well [TS]

00:21:57   you know these little country [TS]

00:21:58   that fight off the dividend to them [TS]

00:21:59   that's not us and I always like that in [TS]

00:22:02   this movie that it's us we're seeing but [TS]

00:22:03   they're in these little countries having [TS]

00:22:05   this crazy thing going on i love that [TS]

00:22:07   combination that's all what do we want [TS]

00:22:09   to talk about market demand now i love i [TS]

00:22:12   love Margaret tomorrow I'll be I'll be [TS]

00:22:14   happy to talk about market tomorrow [TS]

00:22:16   yes I i lost count of how many Marx [TS]

00:22:19   Brothers movie see appears and maybe [TS]

00:22:21   Montier or and he can jump in with the [TS]

00:22:23   the actual total but seven okay there [TS]

00:22:27   you go to the one she's not in stock [TS]

00:22:29   because I feel like they would be [TS]

00:22:30   nothing without her she's so perfect [TS]

00:22:32   they are the later ones and the very [TS]

00:22:34   early winter so gather it beyond it [TS]

00:22:36   isn't monkey business has somewhat odd [TS]

00:22:39   is the yes yes yeah and that's ok that [TS]

00:22:43   that's probably the best-known market [TS]

00:22:45   demand movie but market tomorrow really [TS]

00:22:49   shichi is the glue that holds things [TS]

00:22:53   together because it's the old it's the [TS]

00:22:56   old comedy adage it doesn't work if the [TS]

00:22:58   SAP doesn't have dignity you don't feel [TS]

00:22:59   like she's a victim you like for reasons [TS]

00:23:02   that she doesn't wish to do wish to [TS]

00:23:04   share he feels as though the price [TS]

00:23:06   whatever it is that he delivers to her [TS]

00:23:08   life is worth what she absolutely [TS]

00:23:10   acknowledges i know i gotta put up with [TS]

00:23:12   this but believe me there's upsides this [TS]

00:23:15   relationship that you can't figure out [TS]

00:23:16   she's not a victim she's a masochist [TS]

00:23:18   constant abuse and insulting it she [TS]

00:23:23   comes back from over all but I'm a [TS]

00:23:26   multi-person teach me the reading of the [TS]

00:23:29   word respect spalding Chico is the is [TS]

00:23:31   the the character that that it sits [TS]

00:23:33   between Groucho and Harpo I feel like [TS]

00:23:36   Margaret Dumont is essentially the [TS]

00:23:38   conduit between Groucho and like logical [TS]

00:23:41   thought and reality [TS]

00:23:42   yeah and it's amazing to watch it [TS]

00:23:45   because he's telling jokes at her [TS]

00:23:47   expense [TS]

00:23:47   she everything he says is completely [TS]

00:23:50   ridiculous on the face of it and she [TS]

00:23:52   reacts to it and the way she's written [TS]

00:23:54   to but the the actress bring such a [TS]

00:23:56   great dignity to it she reacts to it all [TS]

00:23:58   as if it's perfectly fine and logical [TS]

00:24:01   and behaves as if what's happening [TS]

00:24:03   around her is anchored somehow in the [TS]

00:24:05   real world which of course it's not [TS]

00:24:07   remotely and i think without that it [TS]

00:24:10   isn't as effective I and [TS]

00:24:12   love that I actually it's I think it's [TS]

00:24:13   fundamentally hilarious that she behaves [TS]

00:24:17   completely as if this is a logical when [TS]

00:24:20   it's completely not that is so funny and [TS]

00:24:23   so important I think in accepting what [TS]

00:24:26   you're seeing it as a person who lives [TS]

00:24:28   in a logical world to to look at this [TS]

00:24:30   thing and be like this is ridiculous but [TS]

00:24:32   she makes it funnier because she anchors [TS]

00:24:35   into reality a little and her delivery [TS]

00:24:37   is just so perfect sheet that it'sit's [TS]

00:24:39   your your typical wealthy Gallinger of [TS]

00:24:42   the the whole exchange between her and [TS]

00:24:47   Groucho where he says you might think me [TS]

00:24:49   a sentimental old fluff but can I have a [TS]

00:24:51   lock of your hair and the way that she [TS]

00:24:53   says loculi yeah you're getting off easy [TS]

00:24:57   i was gonna ask for the whole wig [TS]

00:24:59   maybe it's just it's just a great little [TS]

00:25:00   bit but it's it's sold just by the way [TS]

00:25:03   that she delivers that the setup line [TS]

00:25:06   no yeah the complete list of firm Marx [TS]

00:25:09   Brothers movies is starts all the way [TS]

00:25:11   back at the coconuts then animal [TS]

00:25:13   crackers duck soup night at the opera [TS]

00:25:15   day at the races at the circus and the [TS]

00:25:17   big store so she skipped monkey business [TS]

00:25:20   and horsefeathers [TS]

00:25:20   yeah she's not a horse feathers and I I [TS]

00:25:25   like horsefeathers uh but it suffers for [TS]

00:25:29   her lack of presence in the chat room we [TS]

00:25:32   had several people praising as i was [TS]

00:25:34   wanting to do a lemonade man yeah Edgar [TS]

00:25:37   Kennedy yeah it who great slow burn [TS]

00:25:41   yeah oh yeah as and then his hat which [TS]

00:25:44   is a fast burn so you know you lose as [TS]

00:25:47   many hats it said I actually feel fit [TS]

00:25:50   he's the only character in this entire [TS]

00:25:51   movie that I kind of feel bad for [TS]

00:25:52   because he had had those nice hats [TS]

00:25:55   he wasn't doing nothing those two just [TS]

00:25:57   started picking on him for no reason it [TS]

00:25:59   gets cold at the end yep [TS]

00:26:01   yeah and it's bath is interrupted yeah [TS]

00:26:03   isn't this better than interrupted the [TS]

00:26:07   last insult there's clearly something in [TS]

00:26:09   that in that weird fredonia in protocol [TS]

00:26:11   that states that you can't just crush [TS]

00:26:13   the hell out of people who are [TS]

00:26:14   irritating you because it's he's a very [TS]

00:26:16   large man and Chico and [TS]

00:26:19   and Harpo are not nearly quite so large [TS]

00:26:21   and it seems like any normal man who was [TS]

00:26:24   not held back by some sort of societal [TS]

00:26:26   mores would have it would have put them [TS]

00:26:30   in the peanut machine itself and watch [TS]

00:26:32   them burn to a crisp [TS]

00:26:33   I like to think of some poor kid is a [TS]

00:26:35   big big fan of these movies like in the [TS]

00:26:37   thirties think oh I have very little [TS]

00:26:39   experience with other people [TS]

00:26:40   this is this is how conflicts are [TS]

00:26:41   handled i could just take this person's [TS]

00:26:43   account for half of their head try to [TS]

00:26:45   set it on fire and he will just stay [TS]

00:26:46   there do nothing and wait for [TS]

00:26:48   retribution like new [TS]

00:26:50   you know that's not how it works video [TS]

00:26:51   we will be wearing that hat internally [TS]

00:26:54   sir you ever tried to walk up somebody [TS]

00:26:56   and just put your leg in their hand it [TS]

00:26:57   doesn't go well no that is by far by the [TS]

00:27:00   way my favorite thing I'm all the [TS]

00:27:01   interactions with the lemonade man is [TS]

00:27:03   that is the fact that somebody keeps [TS]

00:27:05   ending up with somebody else's leg in [TS]

00:27:06   there and just it's so bizarre [TS]

00:27:10   see the reason it's so nice to each [TS]

00:27:12   other is that previously were the hot [TS]

00:27:14   dog vendor who was one of the other [TS]

00:27:15   vendors murdered and so they're they're [TS]

00:27:18   all kind of on edge because they don't [TS]

00:27:20   they know yeah it's gonna go badly if [TS]

00:27:22   there's any more violence in the fender [TS]

00:27:24   adonian street vendor wars have 1925 [TS]

00:27:27   reaction reaction that they're all [TS]

00:27:29   wearing body cams now they all know [TS]

00:27:30   they're being recorded [TS]

00:27:32   it's a yeah they crack down on that in [TS]

00:27:34   front of what's in front of the the the [TS]

00:27:36   Capitol building to Harper doesn't have [TS]

00:27:38   a cami as a live dog that lives inside [TS]

00:27:40   his chest that keeps an eye out [TS]

00:27:42   yeah something like that I do love that [TS]

00:27:44   that is a that is a fun sequence of bits [TS]

00:27:47   with the peanuts lemonade leg and [TS]

00:27:51   somebody's arm and then and then to pay [TS]

00:27:52   off at the end where the lemonade man [TS]

00:27:54   after losing many hats that it has his [TS]

00:27:56   bath interrupted [TS]

00:27:57   it's like of all the houses in all of [TS]

00:28:00   fredonia the poor eliminated man it's [TS]

00:28:02   just yeah it's a few happen as a young [TS]

00:28:04   impressionable kid might my favorite [TS]

00:28:07   bits in the movie besides the mirror bit [TS]

00:28:09   i love the the three times that graduate [TS]

00:28:14   tries to get in the the sidecar and our [TS]

00:28:16   post speeds awesome my son my son [TS]

00:28:18   thought was so saw a little bit of this [TS]

00:28:20   while we were watching it and he thought [TS]

00:28:22   that was the funniest thing ever [TS]

00:28:23   yeah now that's it when you're when when [TS]

00:28:25   you're in that when you're in that eight [TS]

00:28:28   to thirteen age range [TS]

00:28:30   Harpo on the motorcycle is is the [TS]

00:28:33   greatest thing ever and the other thing [TS]

00:28:34   is when Harper was writing to to warn [TS]

00:28:37   the Fredonia is that Slovenia is [TS]

00:28:40   attacking and the young lady calls to [TS]

00:28:44   him up to the room and he rushes up to [TS]

00:28:46   the room and they cut to the shot of his [TS]

00:28:49   boots on the floor and her boots on the [TS]

00:28:51   floor and then the four horseshoes and [TS]

00:28:54   has it as you got me and I began to [TS]

00:28:57   think that there's something weird about [TS]

00:28:58   that but because of the Hays Code she's [TS]

00:29:03   in a separate bed [TS]

00:29:04   exactly and horses between them yeah the [TS]

00:29:06   horses in the bed when part but that's [TS]

00:29:08   okay [TS]

00:29:09   there is a crackpot theory that I kind [TS]

00:29:12   of like which is that the harp oh that [TS]

00:29:14   is gross driver is not the same [TS]

00:29:16   character as the harp oh that is a spy i [TS]

00:29:19   was going to say that a pinky and [TS]

00:29:21   chicolini really terrible spies [TS]

00:29:23   generally responsible every pad like I [TS]

00:29:26   know I I'll acela peanuts [TS]

00:29:28   ok unless one of them is also the driver [TS]

00:29:31   for the President and onia like that's [TS]

00:29:34   really good spying if he got that job [TS]

00:29:36   now that's why I think that's a whole [TS]

00:29:38   different character that's also played [TS]

00:29:40   by her up although he never drives him [TS]

00:29:41   know he's there for about 30 seconds in [TS]

00:29:44   something takes off on his own [TS]

00:29:45   yeah he's a double agent he's pretty [TS]

00:29:47   he's saving him by back to crappy spy [TS]

00:29:49   again yeah could be going for the double [TS]

00:29:51   bluff where he's goin property he can't [TS]

00:29:53   possibly be at that as super-state [TS]

00:29:55   super-agent this [TS]

00:29:57   meanwhile he made while he's there with [TS]

00:29:58   a Minox camera his Excellency's car like [TS]

00:30:02   things like Oh mm what if he's [TS]

00:30:04   deliberately keeping his Excellency from [TS]

00:30:06   his important meetings sabotage [TS]

00:30:08   haha oh ya know there is good except so [TS]

00:30:11   in the in advance my career that [TS]

00:30:13   wednesday as a doubleheader nobody go we [TS]

00:30:15   see him really hoping I think we have a [TS]

00:30:18   great man [TS]

00:30:19   no bulky think we follow the wrong man [TS]

00:30:22   ok bad spies terrible bad Dino is [TS]

00:30:27   another character who has to pretend [TS]

00:30:28   that things that happen around ya sense [TS]

00:30:30   yeah actually you know that my favourite [TS]

00:30:32   bit in the whole what we we follow him [TS]

00:30:34   we go to the game he doesn't go to the [TS]

00:30:36   game [TS]

00:30:36   my favourite bit is where he says what [TS]

00:30:40   is it they the the kid there's no game [TS]

00:30:42   everybody goes [TS]

00:30:44   like what you see if it leads to [TS]

00:30:47   complete the illogic it's wonderful [TS]

00:30:50   that's no good that's no good no I think [TS]

00:30:52   we follow the wrong way and i'm a big [TS]

00:30:54   fan of shadow day because I feel like [TS]

00:30:56   they deliberately only followed up on [TS]

00:30:58   saturday so that they'd be able to stay [TS]

00:31:00   this stupid stupid joke during their [TS]

00:31:02   reports yeah like in thursday should we [TS]

00:31:04   not [TS]

00:31:05   I got a plan you know if you like plays [TS]

00:31:07   on words a Chico is your man in this [TS]

00:31:09   movie [TS]

00:31:10   yeah you know yes he does dallas texas i [TS]

00:31:13   got i got a job I got a job for you in [TS]

00:31:15   the mint no no like a mint whatever [TS]

00:31:18   flavors you got stupid that one that's [TS]

00:31:22   the kind of joke where you laugh out [TS]

00:31:24   loud man you say that stupid i sold a [TS]

00:31:26   code into Parapan plans [TS]

00:31:28   yeah their plans you [TS]

00:31:32   shame on you Chico and but he's always [TS]

00:31:35   looking around for approval for his [TS]

00:31:36   horrible nice cold glass of lemonade [TS]

00:31:38   jokes and he looks around haha that's a [TS]

00:31:42   good one in it boss no it's not a good [TS]

00:31:44   one chico quieter will have zero sing [TS]

00:31:48   and the place was doing wordplay based [TS]

00:31:51   on products that are no longer available [TS]

00:31:52   like okay I know that calomel he's [TS]

00:31:56   trying to do a wordplay and caramel I [TS]

00:31:58   just don't know what I calomel is well [TS]

00:32:00   there's calomel is also i walk a mile [TS]

00:32:02   for a calomel which is a joke on the [TS]

00:32:04   line I'd walk a mile for a camel camel [TS]

00:32:07   there must be a citizen I got my second [TS]

00:32:08   paper's like hey I will laugh at that is [TS]

00:32:11   though it's a joke and over want to go [TS]

00:32:13   to Wikipedia to find out what [TS]

00:32:14   integration I was like 30 it so this is [TS]

00:32:18   a reference that I always that there's a [TS]

00:32:20   reference and I always win stat and it's [TS]

00:32:22   not like a day at the races where [TS]

00:32:24   there's the school seniors will see [TS]

00:32:27   that's unfortunate but I'm just saying [TS]

00:32:29   that goes on forever [TS]

00:32:30   yeah it's also the time stops in that [TS]

00:32:32   yeah but beautiful silico so in this [TS]

00:32:36   Groucho says what is it [TS]

00:32:40   my mother was a little Armstrong the [TS]

00:32:42   head with little headstrong the [TS]

00:32:44   headstones married the armstrongs and [TS]

00:32:45   that's why darkies were born he says and [TS]

00:32:47   I think oh ok there's some racism so [TS]

00:32:50   went to the internet tried to get to the [TS]

00:32:53   bottom of this and discovered that [TS]

00:32:56   that's actually pair [TS]

00:32:57   partying a song called that's why [TS]

00:33:00   darkies were born which is a satire on [TS]

00:33:04   racism [TS]

00:33:05   yeah and so it turns out i don't have to [TS]

00:33:07   win that anymore because they're in on [TS]

00:33:09   that they're there they're making a [TS]

00:33:11   double reference to something that's [TS]

00:33:13   actually a satire against racism makes [TS]

00:33:15   me feel a lot better [TS]

00:33:16   well you say that and yet about and then [TS]

00:33:20   maybe and they went made the day at the [TS]

00:33:21   races so yeah yeah that that's seven [TS]

00:33:24   years ago I want to go see a duck soup [TS]

00:33:28   at on at the paramount theatre in [TS]

00:33:30   oakland on the big screen and they bring [TS]

00:33:32   out the Wurlitzer organ and showing [TS]

00:33:34   newsreel beforehand that joke not go [TS]

00:33:37   over well with the audience [TS]

00:33:40   well yeah you would essentially you need [TS]

00:33:42   to stop at me professor come up on [TS]

00:33:44   stands one giving a lecture we have PT [TS]

00:33:46   entry and that's what makes things funny [TS]

00:33:49   yeah maybe the only thing that got a [TS]

00:33:51   worse reaction was the newsreel [TS]

00:33:52   beforehand which had a thing about the [TS]

00:33:54   Shah of Iran and he didn't [TS]

00:33:57   Oakland is not ready to forgive the Sean [TS]

00:34:00   come anyway I at least at least i can [TS]

00:34:03   not win that and just go back to wincing [TS]

00:34:05   more at the the scene in India the races [TS]

00:34:08   it's yes no sure so I at the end of this [TS]

00:34:11   movie they do that we're going to war [TS]

00:34:13   song and then also Groucho is literally [TS]

00:34:15   in a different outfit in every single [TS]

00:34:16   scene because that's just like at this [TS]

00:34:18   point [TS]

00:34:19   look we've been watching a movie for [TS]

00:34:21   whatever 15 minutes and we already know [TS]

00:34:23   that it they don't care it doesn't [TS]

00:34:25   matter and that and if it's funny that [TS]

00:34:28   whatever they do there's just no there [TS]

00:34:30   are no rules here but and yet at this [TS]

00:34:33   moment you're like okay this is even [TS]

00:34:34   crazier than the previous 15 minutes of [TS]

00:34:37   this movie has been in a funny way also [TS]

00:34:39   if there's a boy scout costume yes right [TS]

00:34:41   to ya it becomes completely chaotic at [TS]

00:34:43   that point maybe using working with with [TS]

00:34:45   war makes perfect sense [TS]

00:34:47   I've seen this movie many times not as [TS]

00:34:49   many as Phil I still don't know why [TS]

00:34:51   Chico and her PO are on the Fredonia [TS]

00:34:54   inside for the end of the movie [TS]

00:34:56   well chicken comes in and says that he's [TS]

00:34:58   changed sides yes this is the one time [TS]

00:35:00   that he admits that he switch sides [TS]

00:35:01   because the food's better over here and [TS]

00:35:04   they actually have people encounter and [TS]

00:35:05   talk about all your partner is deserted [TS]

00:35:07   us [TS]

00:35:07   so that's that explains more about [TS]

00:35:09   oh I enjoy that are you know is always a [TS]

00:35:12   giant shells flying through the windows [TS]

00:35:14   but i'm sure i enjoy when they when they [TS]

00:35:17   when they call out for help you know [TS]

00:35:20   send help if you can't send help send [TS]

00:35:22   two more women and then they didn't cut [TS]

00:35:24   to the footage of first it's a fire [TS]

00:35:27   engines than police then marathon [TS]

00:35:30   runners and MPs are comin to get ya [TS]

00:35:33   florist and that is that is just one of [TS]

00:35:37   the greatest uses of stock footage ever [TS]

00:35:39   like it's like not answered and that [TS]

00:35:41   fundamentally that's one of the reasons [TS]

00:35:42   i love this movie is that is it it's [TS]

00:35:44   absurd but what it's talking about is [TS]

00:35:46   the absurdity of war and and that's just [TS]

00:35:49   it's so great it is so hilarious and [TS]

00:35:51   absurd and yet has that has that point [TS]

00:35:53   to it that this whole thing is [TS]

00:35:55   ridiculous and these are you know that [TS]

00:35:57   this is what 20 years after 15 years [TS]

00:36:01   after the ones that woman is officially [TS]

00:36:04   made its 360 no rotation [TS]

00:36:07   yeah yeah so not too long after the [TS]

00:36:09   horrors of World War one and with Europe [TS]

00:36:12   not looking very good right in the [TS]

00:36:14   mid-30s oh what a great time for a movie [TS]

00:36:18   like this but there is very clear and [TS]

00:36:19   and and it's apparently not everybody [TS]

00:36:21   saw it [TS]

00:36:22   yeah I guess then and of course as soon [TS]

00:36:25   as war is declared in the next scene [TS]

00:36:28   rubble everywhere [TS]

00:36:29   yeah yeah so fun fact about this movie [TS]

00:36:32   Mussolini banded in Italy busy if he [TS]

00:36:36   founded insulting which delighted the [TS]

00:36:38   Marx Brothers so I'm not saying if you [TS]

00:36:41   liked this movie or the same as [TS]

00:36:43   Mussolini practice but it is a little [TS]

00:36:45   known fact that the only reason [TS]

00:36:46   Mussolini got the job as there's a rich [TS]

00:36:48   widow who insisted for you because [TS]

00:36:50   people don't remember that but it's it's [TS]

00:36:54   absolutely true unless you give the job [TS]

00:36:56   to you [TS]

00:36:57   that's what we'll do change means [TS]

00:37:00   collection to chair the trains running [TS]

00:37:08   the time its chemical that's in the [TS]

00:37:12   ghoul it seems like chico isn't a better [TS]

00:37:14   miscellany stand-in yeah that's a good [TS]

00:37:18   right boss not is not good [TS]

00:37:21   hey that terrible German accent means we [TS]

00:37:25   should probably transition to Night at [TS]

00:37:26   the Opera in sickroom what is in that [TS]

00:37:29   one [TS]

00:37:30   i'm going to say a few things about duck [TS]

00:37:32   soup a cure and particular one thing [TS]

00:37:34   which is that this is the film that that [TS]

00:37:38   I guess made the Marx Brothers give me a [TS]

00:37:41   second chance with the Marx Brothers i [TS]

00:37:42   guess i should say because I had always [TS]

00:37:44   always grown up and as I was growing up [TS]

00:37:46   I would catch bits and pieces of Marx [TS]

00:37:49   Brothers films or like you know on [TS]

00:37:50   retrospectives on TV and catch like [TS]

00:37:53   classic bits from the mark brother marx [TS]

00:37:54   brothers and I was fun kind of [TS]

00:37:57   irritating and obnoxious it's in [TS]

00:37:59   particular Harpo with you know the [TS]

00:38:01   silence and the horns and the capering [TS]

00:38:03   and Harpo can be an acquired taste [TS]

00:38:06   mm-hmm i had always only ever seen bits [TS]

00:38:08   and pieces I've never seen a full film [TS]

00:38:11   and and I'm going to throw some glaring [TS]

00:38:13   in here and say that one day i was [TS]

00:38:15   having a beer with mike nelson I and [TS]

00:38:18   several the other rifftrax people Mike [TS]

00:38:21   Nelson of mst3k faith that's right that [TS]

00:38:23   Mike Nelson not actually his sister's [TS]

00:38:25   barbers dentist and rifftrax somewhat [TS]

00:38:28   lesser Fame the person or the character [TS]

00:38:30   that or the guy from sea hunt different [TS]

00:38:32   as I can tell there are virtually [TS]

00:38:33   identical episode 223 of the [TS]

00:38:36   uncomfortable for more about mystery [TS]

00:38:37   science theater 3000 little footnote [TS]

00:38:41   their side editor so Mike and several of [TS]

00:38:44   the other people who work for rifftrax [TS]

00:38:45   we're talking about how much they love [TS]

00:38:47   the Marx Brothers now great Marx [TS]

00:38:48   Brothers films were and i nearly open my [TS]

00:38:51   mouth and said I find them rather stupid [TS]

00:38:53   and irritating and then I realized you [TS]

00:38:55   know I've never actually seen an entire [TS]

00:38:56   Marx Brothers so I really need to go and [TS]

00:38:59   do that so that then I can then rightly [TS]

00:39:02   comment on them and at least bash them [TS]

00:39:05   righteously so I went watch duck soup [TS]

00:39:08   this is a couple years back and and i [TS]

00:39:11   watched it and I didn't think it was [TS]

00:39:12   hilarious but I it with the the bad [TS]

00:39:15   attitude that I went into the fact that [TS]

00:39:17   I came out of it saying actually yeah [TS]

00:39:19   that's pretty funny is is kind of [TS]

00:39:21   impressive and ironically it was Harpo i [TS]

00:39:23   ended up being most amused by because [TS]

00:39:25   that tapering is what he does but that [TS]

00:39:27   is some damn good caper even the bits [TS]

00:39:31   that that in in a lesser artist hands [TS]

00:39:33   would be horrible and unwatchable but [TS]

00:39:37   somehow the genius with which he [TS]

00:39:39   approaches it and the way throws himself [TS]

00:39:41   at it it makes it not just tolerable [TS]

00:39:44   wonderful and so yeah duck soup turned [TS]

00:39:48   me around made me if not a Marx Brothers [TS]

00:39:50   fan then at least somebody that doesn't [TS]

00:39:52   say obnoxious things when people are [TS]

00:39:54   discussing them at beer gardens [TS]

00:39:56   god bless you see plots yes Steve's [TS]

00:39:59   heart grew three times that damn yes [TS]

00:40:01   which would have been awkward in packets [TS]

00:40:04   in large part that you should see a [TS]

00:40:06   doctor [TS]

00:40:06   two things I i don't think the mirror [TS]

00:40:09   scene would be nearly as effective if it [TS]

00:40:10   wasn't completely silent [TS]

00:40:12   yeah fact that all the sound goes out [TS]

00:40:14   during that is it is just a complete [TS]

00:40:16   stroke of genius and secondly favorite [TS]

00:40:19   line i can see you right now in the [TS]

00:40:21   kitchen bending over a hot stove but I [TS]

00:40:23   can't see the stove [TS]

00:40:24   yeah i guess the best Marga Dumont burn [TS]

00:40:27   i will leave you i will leave with one [TS]

00:40:29   with one more left favorite line where [TS]

00:40:31   they've locked Roger in the bathroom and [TS]

00:40:33   his party on Thursday [TS]

00:40:35   hey let me out of here at least 40 [TS]

00:40:36   magazine yeah yeah I held him in my arms [TS]

00:40:41   and kissed him out so is murder and [TS]

00:40:44   that's one thing i really like about [TS]

00:40:46   duck soup is that there isn't the [TS]

00:40:48   standard piano solo and harp solo which [TS]

00:40:51   yes in so many other movies i agree with [TS]

00:40:54   Monty I think it's not about it [TS]

00:40:56   there isn't one because the previous [TS]

00:40:58   movie Groucho had insisted on playing [TS]

00:41:01   the guitar just to show everybody what [TS]

00:41:03   it was like to sit through his singing I [TS]

00:41:07   have to sit there listen to this but you [TS]

00:41:09   never asked you people from going out [TS]

00:41:10   into the lobby the cliq blows over [TS]

00:41:12   that's how I feel that it's my fault for [TS]

00:41:15   watching all of their movies so often [TS]

00:41:17   but you see because you I nearly [TS]

00:41:20   accidentally heard gradual play guitar [TS]

00:41:21   but I like chicos piano routine but it [TS]

00:41:25   doesn't need to be in all the movies [TS]

00:41:27   yeah right does he do the same routine [TS]

00:41:28   and everything every film very nearly [TS]

00:41:30   doesn't always do the orange rolling bit [TS]

00:41:32   but the running his finger along [TS]

00:41:34   shooting the keys [TS]

00:41:36   that's his move and say there's only so [TS]

00:41:38   much you can do with the piano as Victor [TS]

00:41:40   borja taught us time [TS]

00:41:42   there certainly is if you've got chicos [TS]

00:41:45   piano skills and watching him play piano [TS]

00:41:47   is like watching a drunk guy trying to [TS]

00:41:49   trust god traffic Road it's like it's [TS]

00:41:52   this is going to be ugly [TS]

00:41:54   even if it's successful so my favorite [TS]

00:41:57   line pop it possibly is since well we're [TS]

00:42:01   doing that before we move on is possibly [TS]

00:42:03   after Margaret Dumont says no your [TS]

00:42:05   excellency I'm so glad you've come and [TS]

00:42:07   chickas i'm glad i come to you got the [TS]

00:42:10   plans because you know graduate with [TS]

00:42:15   such a stylized figure anyway and so [TS]

00:42:17   then having somebody else feel [TS]

00:42:19   something's got Groucho I mean yeah okay [TS]

00:42:21   sure that it's all the same right and [TS]

00:42:23   then he talks that there's something [TS]

00:42:25   wonderful about the fact that Groucho's [TS]

00:42:26   got like these brilliant hilarious [TS]

00:42:28   witticisms and Harpo has this utter [TS]

00:42:31   genius at physical comedy and Chico has [TS]

00:42:34   a really bad temper [TS]

00:42:35   yup and a hat that's the biggest but [TS]

00:42:37   they all have a had sort of scratches [TS]

00:42:40   got horrible hair look like Groucho can [TS]

00:42:43   get the better of anyone in the world [TS]

00:42:44   unless it's chico in which case grotto [TS]

00:42:48   is almost always going to lose the [TS]

00:42:49   exchange not through any genius on [TS]

00:42:53   chicos part which is through utter [TS]

00:42:54   stupidity his own action which with an [TS]

00:42:56   idiot [TS]

00:42:56   yeah you're like fighting it isn't my [TS]

00:42:59   thing doesn't work with this guy [TS]

00:43:00   why a doc I don't know you got me yeah [TS]

00:43:03   that's no good [TS]

00:43:06   I i was my favorite line would be the [TS]

00:43:08   will you marry me did he leave you any [TS]

00:43:09   money [TS]

00:43:10   answer the second question for ya I do i [TS]

00:43:13   do that all the time but the answer the [TS]

00:43:15   second question first I that is that [TS]

00:43:17   it's there's not a week that goes but i [TS]

00:43:21   like when he says can't you see what I'm [TS]

00:43:22   trying to tell you i love you but that's [TS]

00:43:25   me setting something up i'm going to say [TS]

00:43:26   a similar thing later on at the end of [TS]

00:43:28   the night at the opera discussion [TS]

00:43:29   alright have it your money i do we say [TS]

00:43:32   11 last thing yeah okay Steve miguel [TS]

00:43:34   torres haba raba oh yes she wears a very [TS]

00:43:39   tight metallic dress in lots of [TS]

00:43:41   inappropriate the scenes I think she [TS]

00:43:43   looks very uncomfortable throughout most [TS]

00:43:45   the movie she looks like she eats [TS]

00:43:47   something very dead that did not agree [TS]

00:43:49   with her yeah she is clutching her [TS]

00:43:51   midsection through my [TS]

00:43:52   the movie I think she's yeah I think [TS]

00:43:54   she's very uncomfortable in that but but [TS]

00:43:56   she's I think she looks neat she does [TS]

00:43:58   she [TS]

00:43:58   she's lovely she does she's lovely and [TS]

00:44:01   then she talks and it's unclear why [TS]

00:44:04   she's there for others and that she [TS]

00:44:05   looks nice but that's okay [TS]

00:44:08   he's definitely not 20 knows Margaret [TS]

00:44:10   Dumont i'll say that no no time for the [TS]

00:44:13   last sponsor read of the year for the [TS]

00:45:57   being our final sponsor of the year [TS]

00:45:59   alright let's move on to the Night at [TS]

00:46:01   the Opera Night at the Opera was their [TS]

00:46:02   first movie 4mg [TS]

00:46:04   um after their after their five picture [TS]

00:46:06   run with paramount ended and it was [TS]

00:46:10   basically they were under the [TS]

00:46:11   supervision of her Irving Thalberg who [TS]

00:46:14   you may remember from the memorial award [TS]

00:46:16   that bears his name and hit and and [TS]

00:46:20   Thornburg's opinion was the problem with [TS]

00:46:22   the Marx Brothers is they were just [TS]

00:46:24   going around being agents of chaos and [TS]

00:46:26   anyone who came within their path ended [TS]

00:46:30   up on the wrong side of history and that [TS]

00:46:33   there was no wonder root for in the the [TS]

00:46:35   Marx Brothers were off-putting [TS]

00:46:36   particularly to female audiences so he [TS]

00:46:40   insisted that what they were going to do [TS]

00:46:42   is more tightly plotted movies rather [TS]

00:46:45   than just sort of these random bits of [TS]

00:46:47   of whimsy and chaos and there would be a [TS]

00:46:51   love interest that they would so the [TS]

00:46:54   audience would have something root for [TS]

00:46:56   and I depo not Zeppo because my was done [TS]

00:46:59   at this point he went off to become an [TS]

00:47:01   agent and I'm not of chaos know and not [TS]

00:47:06   of chaos of actors who are like chaos [TS]

00:47:08   but a better-paid haha education field [TS]

00:47:14   yeah so so that's what every fall bird [TS]

00:47:18   what you're saying is everything felt [TS]

00:47:19   fallbrook said you know what these [TS]

00:47:20   movies need is Roland subplots and Link [TS]

00:47:24   the musical numbers the landing musical [TS]

00:47:27   numbers and basically scenes that have a [TS]

00:47:29   beginning middle and end is a very much [TS]

00:47:31   what serving Thalberg introduced to the [TS]

00:47:33   mix and pretty much all the MGM movies [TS]

00:47:36   that they did from that point on [TS]

00:47:39   followed that formula and not at the [TS]

00:47:41   Opera really reflects that in this in [TS]

00:47:44   this particular case Groucho is Otis be [TS]

00:47:47   driftwood and he is helping Margaret [TS]

00:47:50   Dumont join society now is he always [TS]

00:47:53   first name initial item in every home so [TS]

00:47:58   is almost always here and the in yeah [TS]

00:48:00   pretty much longer to and this is all [TS]

00:48:04   happening in which will answer me this [TS]

00:48:06   where is this because then they take a [TS]

00:48:08   ship so where where are they so there is [TS]

00:48:10   a bit they're really think they're going [TS]

00:48:12   somewhere they generally and accorded [TS]

00:48:14   apparently where we are not watching the [TS]

00:48:16   ridge [TS]

00:48:16   animal print of Night at the Opera when [TS]

00:48:19   we watch it because there used to be in [TS]

00:48:21   if you if you love the setup for ducks [TS]

00:48:24   if you love the original setup for Night [TS]

00:48:27   at the Opera which featured a very [TS]

00:48:29   lengthy musical number in it and there [TS]

00:48:31   was actually a caption that said italy [TS]

00:48:33   where they sing all day and watch [TS]

00:48:35   operate night which seems vaguely [TS]

00:48:38   stereotypical but no joda they put in [TS]

00:48:41   silent movie title card [TS]

00:48:43   exactly so there's is riveted infamously [TS]

00:48:46   make any pasta all day [TS]

00:48:48   yes and then go to the Opera tonight the [TS]

00:48:50   best thing about this being initially [TS]

00:48:52   said in Italy is for a change Chico is [TS]

00:48:54   not the least Italian Italian in the [TS]

00:48:56   room [TS]

00:48:57   exactly so yes it's supposedly said in [TS]

00:49:01   Italy and that the plot that a Groucho [TS]

00:49:06   settles on to get the market amounted to [TS]

00:49:10   society is that she is going to [TS]

00:49:13   basically donate lots of money to the [TS]

00:49:15   New York opera so that they can bring [TS]

00:49:16   over a great Italian tenor to perform [TS]

00:49:19   and there is a is that there's a [TS]

00:49:23   basically the zippo role is this this a [TS]

00:49:27   piece of war meet who he's not that warm [TS]

00:49:31   know haha happy he loves a lady and he [TS]

00:49:35   also sings and Chico is his good friend [TS]

00:49:38   and harpos the dresser of the jerky [TS]

00:49:40   famous Italian tenor that market de [TS]

00:49:43   menthe is going to fund and they all go [TS]

00:49:47   over on the cruise ship together 22 to [TS]

00:49:50   New York and and then chaos ensues the [TS]

00:49:53   Opera for a tightly plotted movie this [TS]

00:49:55   has even less plot the duck soup and [TS]

00:49:59   it's basically a Groucho and Chico and [TS]

00:50:03   Harpo causing all sorts of chaos among [TS]

00:50:06   society swells like Margaret Dumont like [TS]

00:50:09   signalmen who is the head of the New [TS]

00:50:11   York opera and the and I gotta read mr. [TS]

00:50:16   Godley mr. haire Gottlieb oh yeah that [TS]

00:50:18   way and i say this i am like legal label [TS]

00:50:21   Dudley listeners may not know sick Roman [TS]

00:50:24   from a hole in the ground but basically [TS]

00:50:26   if you needed a pompous German between [TS]

00:50:28   1930 and then [TS]

00:50:30   eighteen sixty he is going to show up in [TS]

00:50:31   your movie because yeah because this [TS]

00:50:33   voice heard [TS]

00:50:34   ah alright have mr. driftwood and he [TS]

00:50:38   generally were a monocle he's under [TS]

00:50:40   Schultz installing 17 [TS]

00:50:42   yeah it's probably his biggest role but [TS]

00:50:44   basically he plays the the the the [TS]

00:50:48   Teutonic jerk in lots of movies and he [TS]

00:50:52   and he's great hear any some the the guy [TS]

00:50:56   who plays the pompous tenor is is less [TS]

00:51:00   good now i think yeah I felt bad for [TS]

00:51:03   that guy towards the end of the movie [TS]

00:51:04   because people were really dumping on [TS]

00:51:06   him for no reason right and he was [TS]

00:51:09   historically a journey i guess like [TS]

00:51:11   there's the scene where he comes in [TS]

00:51:12   finds out that his woman is with some [TS]

00:51:14   other guy says oh she she was never his [TS]

00:51:17   woman remember he was trying to like [TS]

00:51:18   sort of a workplace harass her [TS]

00:51:21   ok I'm i'ma go the big i'm going to me [TS]

00:51:24   and I won't be I'm being worried about [TS]

00:51:25   your coupler company if you come with me [TS]

00:51:27   that can find a place for you in the new [TS]

00:51:29   yorker right by the woman he wishes to [TS]

00:51:31   what he walks in says huh [TS]

00:51:34   there's a guy already here well in the [TS]

00:51:36   boudoir to his company and three's a [TS]

00:51:38   crowd and that and rages them and they [TS]

00:51:41   attack him they were hoping for a [TS]

00:51:43   ménage I think he was very polite there [TS]

00:51:46   this this is again part of irving [TS]

00:51:47   thalberg theory is that now the Marx [TS]

00:51:49   Brothers will just be chaotic and mean [TS]

00:51:53   around people who themselves bring it to [TS]

00:51:55   bring it on themselves like like sick [TS]

00:51:58   Ruhlman and jerky Italian tenor and at [TS]

00:52:00   the end of the Opera why is everybody [TS]

00:52:02   booing jerky Italian tender I know the [TS]

00:52:04   audience liked the other guy a little [TS]

00:52:06   more but come on he didn't do anything [TS]

00:52:08   to you for watching a movie that you [TS]

00:52:10   wanted to get to see this famous guy now [TS]

00:52:12   you're booing and therefore an apple at [TS]

00:52:14   him because watermelons are had a season [TS]

00:52:16   huh [TS]

00:52:18   the i always am confused by this movie [TS]

00:52:21   because I and I think that says [TS]

00:52:24   something about what's memorable to me [TS]

00:52:26   about it is I always want this movie to [TS]

00:52:28   be called something like a trip on a [TS]

00:52:30   boat got a night at the opera it's like [TS]

00:52:33   oh it's the one with the Opera is that [TS]

00:52:34   the one with the boat because the boat [TS]

00:52:36   part is the part I like way around the [TS]

00:52:37   boat and they have to get on the boat [TS]

00:52:39   and then there are much longer than the [TS]

00:52:41   part of the up [TS]

00:52:41   yeah perfect sets and they already did a [TS]

00:52:43   movie that's a movie out of boat now I [TS]

00:52:47   guess so this is about the Opera but [TS]

00:52:49   it's on a boat [TS]

00:52:50   ok this is hell yeah you're hit you're [TS]

00:52:53   hinting at the central problem of Night [TS]

00:52:55   at the Opera which is actually a movie i [TS]

00:52:56   enjoy though God not nearly as much as [TS]

00:53:00   as duck soup but basically night at the [TS]

00:53:02   opera has a couple of great scenes in it [TS]

00:53:05   and in between those great scenes is a [TS]

00:53:07   lot of filler and sometimes that fill [TS]

00:53:10   her musical numbers that do not feature [TS]

00:53:12   the Marx Brothers in any way shape or [TS]

00:53:14   form and some of the time it's it's Marx [TS]

00:53:18   Brothers bits that that didn't work out [TS]

00:53:21   very well i also find the pacing of this [TS]

00:53:24   movie problematic compared to two duck [TS]

00:53:27   soup because they they worked in pause [TS]

00:53:29   for laughs and that's a byproduct of as [TS]

00:53:32   we mentioned they would put they took [TS]

00:53:34   the show out on the road and timed it to [TS]

00:53:36   see when people with laughs and you you [TS]

00:53:39   can see them paws on screen so that they [TS]

00:53:41   that they don't talk over the laugh [TS]

00:53:44   lines of whereas in duck soup they're [TS]

00:53:46   just doing laughing laughing laugh line [TS]

00:53:48   and and if you if you're laughing and [TS]

00:53:50   you miss it that's that's great because [TS]

00:53:52   you're laughing but but I kind of love [TS]

00:53:54   those moments because frequently what [TS]

00:53:56   they'll fill that space with is a look [TS]

00:53:58   at it like a zoom in on Groucho and his [TS]

00:54:00   eyes are like pointing at the ceiling [TS]

00:54:01   and sharing in opposite directions and [TS]

00:54:03   somehow that makes the the whole bit [TS]

00:54:06   funnier me i don't think i don't think [TS]

00:54:07   this hold for Laughs either i die i [TS]

00:54:09   think of it as part of the pacing the [TS]

00:54:10   timing of the show em for me for me to [TS]

00:54:14   talk the pacing doesn't work there's a [TS]

00:54:15   feeling to me actually in in all the [TS]

00:54:17   Marx Brothers movies where there are [TS]

00:54:19   there are moments where you feel like [TS]

00:54:20   these are two people standing at the [TS]

00:54:21   front of the stage doing there it's like [TS]

00:54:23   okay now we're now we're here at the [TS]

00:54:25   front of the stage now we're going to do [TS]

00:54:26   our lips and especially especially when [TS]

00:54:28   he and Chico or negotiating the contract [TS]

00:54:30   yeah oh yeah like Oh curtain comes down [TS]

00:54:33   there doing something back there [TS]

00:54:35   these two are just going to open up [TS]

00:54:37   they're going to their with double-talk [TS]

00:54:38   and it's funny it's funny it's not bad [TS]

00:54:40   but you can suddenly any feel so much so [TS]

00:54:43   stagey so yeah so much like this is the [TS]

00:54:45   bit where they stand at the front of the [TS]

00:54:47   stage and talk to the audience and are [TS]

00:54:48   doing the pause and look and sometimes [TS]

00:54:51   there's a cut to a closer shot where [TS]

00:54:53   there's a reaction but it feels [TS]

00:54:55   very much like you know like like [TS]

00:54:57   something you'd see on stage and and [TS]

00:54:59   timing works as a stage timing i suppose [TS]

00:55:02   seems like that reminds me a lot of [TS]

00:55:04   abbott and costello movies were they [TS]

00:55:06   clearly like every 15 minutes just wrote [TS]

00:55:08   down and then they do this well [TS]

00:55:10   rehearsed routine [TS]

00:55:11   mm then they do slowly a turn then they [TS]

00:55:14   do who's on first they have to do the [TS]

00:55:16   Susquehanna hat company Costello does [TS]

00:55:19   math on chalkboard you can't fool me [TS]

00:55:21   there's no such thing as Santa Claus [TS]

00:55:23   yeah that's one of the great fits in [TS]

00:55:25   there the sandy claws bit and the [TS]

00:55:27   stateroom bit and surrounded stateroom [TS]

00:55:30   the stateroom bit is is spectacular and [TS]

00:55:32   after another thing that my [TS]

00:55:34   four-year-old gloves as i alluded to the [TS]

00:55:36   top I was the thing I love at the more [TS]

00:55:38   times i watch the stateroom scene which [TS]

00:55:39   I've been seeing since I was 18 years [TS]

00:55:40   old or something like that that the the [TS]

00:55:43   thing I like now that I think liam is as [TS]

00:55:45   Groucho waving everybody into the room [TS]

00:55:48   that at no point is it it's not because [TS]

00:55:51   it in another comedy will be like oh [TS]

00:55:53   geez what do I do [TS]

00:55:54   there are more people coming in how do i [TS]

00:55:56   get mo don't come in no no they came in [TS]

00:56:00   we dress like on in at the best fish [TS]

00:56:02   would you like a manicure [TS]

00:56:03   no come on it i'm going to leave the [TS]

00:56:07   room you're going to start better you [TS]

00:56:09   have to start on the ceiling up come on [TS]

00:56:10   the part I like is during the ordering [TS]

00:56:13   food part now Groucho was in the role of [TS]

00:56:16   the guy who has to just accept every [TS]

00:56:18   pretend everything's normal [TS]

00:56:20   right so he's like Oh work hard boiled [TS]

00:56:23   eggs ok does not plan to hire players it [TS]

00:56:26   I beg your pardon about this is my trunk [TS]

00:56:28   this is your truck i don't remember [TS]

00:56:29   packing your boys won one of the things [TS]

00:56:34   that I offended a couple years ago about [TS]

00:56:35   the stateroom seen at that point Buster [TS]

00:56:39   Keaton was sort of you know there were [TS]

00:56:42   no more silent movies he'd sort of [TS]

00:56:43   washed out of making his own talking [TS]

00:56:46   films and he was working as a gag man at [TS]

00:56:49   MGM and he helped design the stateroom [TS]

00:56:53   seen inspired by seen in one of his [TS]

00:56:54   silent movies [TS]

00:56:56   yeah yeah he did a lot he would he would [TS]

00:56:58   sell a lot of the gags that were on his [TS]

00:57:00   friends previous movies and basically [TS]

00:57:03   someone to other other shows like the [TS]

00:57:05   Red Skelton films later on we're [TS]

00:57:07   essentially remakes of [TS]

00:57:08   films we'd already made in a night at [TS]

00:57:11   the opera a lot of stuff that the Harper [TS]

00:57:13   was doing like with the rigging in the [TS]

00:57:14   backstage that was also like busting [TS]

00:57:17   stuff [TS]

00:57:17   yeah I like I i gotta say that I this is [TS]

00:57:20   not the most popular opinion I usually [TS]

00:57:23   prefer like horse feathers and duck soup [TS]

00:57:26   excuse me I'm sorry I might be really [TS]

00:57:28   prefer a night at the opera to duck soup [TS]

00:57:31   chiefly because like I feel as though [TS]

00:57:33   they're both really really funny [TS]

00:57:36   the problem is that like we never leave [TS]

00:57:38   the Marx Brothers world in duck soup [TS]

00:57:42   I think it's fine I i prefer this [TS]

00:57:44   version of it in tonight the Opera [TS]

00:57:46   because they are the only crazy people [TS]

00:57:48   in the in the real world of of New York [TS]

00:57:51   much maybe they got more straight-laced [TS]

00:57:53   people to go up against then they have [TS]

00:57:55   the previous one so i think that most of [TS]

00:57:58   their energy lands a lot better in this [TS]

00:58:01   movie that doesn't mean duck soup i'm [TS]

00:58:04   actually gonna agree with Andy here this [TS]

00:58:06   is actually only my second Marx Brothers [TS]

00:58:07   movie and maybe that's part of it but [TS]

00:58:10   I've seen duck soup and a senior night [TS]

00:58:11   at the opera and this one for some [TS]

00:58:14   reason I think duck soup is probably [TS]

00:58:16   funnier but as a movie this is this is [TS]

00:58:19   actually a movie where and said that [TS]

00:58:21   soup was not now not ever [TS]

00:58:23   that's a fair criticism yeah duck soup [TS]

00:58:25   is a pile of sketches and then the [TS]

00:58:26   second thing again kind of plumbing on [TS]

00:58:28   what Angie and he said having actual [TS]

00:58:31   characters that aren't the goofy Marx [TS]

00:58:33   Brothers to kind of live on their own [TS]

00:58:35   insane plane or characters that are just [TS]

00:58:38   total rooms I think kind of anchors the [TS]

00:58:40   outlandish sense of what they're doing [TS]

00:58:41   and and their reference feels likes [TS]

00:58:43   being aimed at realistic targets instead [TS]

00:58:45   of just strawman and it's it's to me [TS]

00:58:47   it's a lot funnier for it [TS]

00:58:49   yeah it's also interesting that this is [TS]

00:58:51   a movie which other people get the [TS]

00:58:52   better road marks and start chico or [TS]

00:58:55   Harpo where the head of the Opera [TS]

00:58:56   Company once the once he's eat he's got [TS]

00:59:00   he's got you figured out and he's just [TS]

00:59:02   looking for an opportunity to get him [TS]

00:59:04   turfed out and of course he gets the [TS]

00:59:06   opportunity he gets thrown off the top [TS]

00:59:08   of the stairs and now he's living in the [TS]

00:59:09   park next to the other two like I'm [TS]

00:59:11   something I'm sure sure I'm glad I met [TS]

00:59:13   you two fellows also it's nice to have [TS]

00:59:16   someone to kind of root [TS]

00:59:18   we're here I mean you can't you can't [TS]

00:59:20   really root for the Marx Brothers [TS]

00:59:21   because you know nothing can possibly [TS]

00:59:23   harm them you know that they live on [TS]

00:59:25   this different plane of existence their [TS]

00:59:26   cartoon characters they're like they're [TS]

00:59:28   like a band of Jewish Ferris Bueller's [TS]

00:59:30   their Jewish fairy godmothers to these [TS]

00:59:33   this young couple fit anybody else [TS]

00:59:36   booing them to get back together just [TS]

00:59:38   because they're in a hope in a hotel [TS]

00:59:41   room and there's a detective looking for [TS]

00:59:43   them it's not really worried they're [TS]

00:59:45   just going to rearrange furniture while [TS]

00:59:47   running away [TS]

00:59:48   yeah right so I mean if you if you if [TS]

00:59:50   you care enough about alan jones and [TS]

00:59:52   kitty Carlisle and i'm not saying [TS]

00:59:53   everybody will but if you care enough [TS]

00:59:55   about them to to to be too invested and [TS]

00:59:58   how things turn out for them then [TS]

00:59:58   how things turn out for them then [TS]

01:00:00   and yeah i mean it's it's nice to see [TS]

01:00:01   the Marx Brothers sort of training their [TS]

01:00:04   chaos on on somebody that you want to [TS]

01:00:07   see lose whereas everybody that they [TS]

01:00:09   bang on in in duck soup is just there to [TS]

01:00:12   be banged up so I agree with everything [TS]

01:00:13   you said just there except for one thing [TS]

01:00:15   which is I don't care about these other [TS]

01:00:17   characters they're really boring the [TS]

01:00:19   musical numbers that therein are very [TS]

01:00:21   interesting and that's why although I [TS]

01:00:23   mean this is what I'm saying [TS]

01:00:24   duck soup is arguably if you had [TS]

01:00:26   inserted those things you could get you [TS]

01:00:28   could inflate it up to 90 minutes and it [TS]

01:00:30   had to be the length of a night at the [TS]

01:00:31   opera I I quite honestly would rather go [TS]

01:00:35   the other way and deflate Night at the [TS]

01:00:37   Opera to have to be less of a movie and [TS]

01:00:39   more that was funny because that stuff [TS]

01:00:41   doesn't it doesn't work for me I i do [TS]

01:00:43   dream of the perfect Marx Brothers movie [TS]

01:00:46   that has a really good interesting plot [TS]

01:00:48   with interesting characters and maybe [TS]

01:00:50   even songs that I care about but and [TS]

01:00:52   perhaps it's just because i'm not you [TS]

01:00:55   know perhaps Irving Thalberg knew very [TS]

01:00:56   well what audiences in 1935 wanted to [TS]

01:00:59   see but it now from this vantage point I [TS]

01:01:01   look back and it's like I'm really only [TS]

01:01:03   there for the jokes and yeah but not the [TS]

01:01:06   rapids a day back in the day [TS]

01:01:08   movies like this and Laurel and Hardy [TS]

01:01:09   when they would be edited down for you [TS]

01:01:13   know let's fit in as many commercials as [TS]

01:01:14   we can [TS]

01:01:15   they would focus on the plots because [TS]

01:01:18   like oh well there's the plot we need to [TS]

01:01:19   take this defect because it has nothing [TS]

01:01:20   to do with anything and that was before [TS]

01:01:22   TV stations figured out that await your [TS]

01:01:25   watching it for Laurel and Hardy and the [TS]

01:01:27   Marx Brothers which you know why watch [TS]

01:01:30   Night at the Opera unless you're a kitty [TS]

01:01:32   Carlisle Hart fan i tend to IA I'm gonna [TS]

01:01:36   steal roger ebert's assessment of this [TS]

01:01:38   movie and it's basically it's it's good [TS]

01:01:41   but i finally ate you fast-forward [TS]

01:01:42   through the parts that don't involve the [TS]

01:01:45   Marx Brothers that the number that kitty [TS]

01:01:48   Carlisle and alan jones singh is just oh [TS]

01:01:51   my finger seems to have slipped to the [TS]

01:01:53   fast-forward button and also alone [TS]

01:01:57   no no yeah which was written by the guys [TS]

01:02:00   who wrote duk-soo yeah we have only one [TS]

01:02:02   song and it's not very good but we're [TS]

01:02:04   just gonna keep on repeating it [TS]

01:02:06   hopefully I when I think you're being [TS]

01:02:08   very unfair co co saw pitches well that [TS]

01:02:12   we're also insulting Trovatore yes but [TS]

01:02:15   that was that was only to do some of [TS]

01:02:17   those songs come from the world and then [TS]

01:02:20   there's alone [TS]

01:02:21   yeah it's been this movie look at that [TS]

01:02:23   is what we talk we're talking about two [TS]

01:02:25   different kinds of comedy [TS]

01:02:26   yeah we're at what I I again I have no [TS]

01:02:29   complaints about duck soup just an [TS]

01:02:31   observation that if you come in at the [TS]

01:02:33   halfway point duck soup doesn't matter [TS]

01:02:36   if my greens in order doesn't matter [TS]

01:02:38   there is a sort there's a certain payoff [TS]

01:02:40   to watch to starting 90 operate the [TS]

01:02:42   beginning and then sing it to the very [TS]

01:02:44   very end there's a payoff there that is [TS]

01:02:46   the duck soup at the end they win a war [TS]

01:02:48   and save a nation and you really don't [TS]

01:02:50   care what you know doesn't matter at all [TS]

01:02:53   without the offers like okay great they [TS]

01:02:55   got the the good guys won the bad guys [TS]

01:02:57   lost and you really do care about that [TS]

01:02:59   to an extent when they only won because [TS]

01:03:01   of a strange technicality where if you [TS]

01:03:03   capture the ambassador and wanders into [TS]

01:03:05   your house everything with oranges the [TS]

01:03:07   war is over [TS]

01:03:08   that's what that is but that is the [TS]

01:03:10   perfect statement of that kind of comedy [TS]

01:03:12   we're at the there they're playing this [TS]

01:03:14   with like live ammunition but basically [TS]

01:03:15   there are two bunch of neighborhood kids [TS]

01:03:17   in the backyard playing play capture the [TS]

01:03:19   flag or burger or keep away and now it's [TS]

01:03:22   over put up the card info i flipped over [TS]

01:03:24   look at the general i win haha one [TS]

01:03:26   pretty everything mrs. Trent inos pretty [TS]

01:03:30   brave normally ambassador's aren't out [TS]

01:03:32   on the front lines like that wander do [TS]

01:03:34   not find dick cheney around anywhere [TS]

01:03:36   near the middle east [TS]

01:03:37   that's very true well grouches the [TS]

01:03:39   president of the country and he's out [TS]

01:03:41   there [TS]

01:03:41   yeah that's drinking responsibility for [TS]

01:03:43   his actions you see so I i think this is [TS]

01:03:46   interesting this is really what's [TS]

01:03:47   different about these about these two [TS]

01:03:49   films that the the night at the opera [TS]

01:03:50   has the trappings of actual like what we [TS]

01:03:53   expect from a movie it's got these other [TS]

01:03:55   characters got the subplots get the [TS]

01:03:57   romance it's got the the musical [TS]

01:04:00   interludes with including with the Marx [TS]

01:04:03   Brothers and I got the sense from it [TS]

01:04:06   like again like of like a variety [TS]

01:04:10   there were submitted variety the people [TS]

01:04:12   want variety will give them some music [TS]

01:04:13   will give us some romance and we'll give [TS]

01:04:14   him some laughs and well packaged it all [TS]

01:04:16   together and that's a movie and that's [TS]

01:04:18   fine except that like i said from my [TS]

01:04:20   perspective in the 21st century i look [TS]

01:04:22   at this and think I'm really i really [TS]

01:04:24   only interested in the last give me more [TS]

01:04:27   laughs and and that's just I mean and I [TS]

01:04:30   agree that by having none of that in [TS]

01:04:32   duck soup is kind of like not even a [TS]

01:04:34   movie it is just a series of comedy [TS]

01:04:37   routines it's totally true and that's I [TS]

01:04:39   think that's sort of what's fascinating [TS]

01:04:40   about how these how these things are [TS]

01:04:42   different and I think you could argue i [TS]

01:04:44   haven't seen have seen every Marx [TS]

01:04:46   Brothers movie i don't think i have but [TS]

01:04:48   so please tell me if I'm wrong but would [TS]

01:04:52   you say that there is a perfect Marx [TS]

01:04:54   Brothers movie because if these are [TS]

01:04:55   generally thought to be the two best I [TS]

01:04:56   mean it seems to me that all of them are [TS]

01:04:58   kind of problematic because there are [TS]

01:05:00   the funny bits and then there's kind of [TS]

01:05:01   the loose stuff around the funny bits [TS]

01:05:03   coconuts is more of an actual movie like [TS]

01:05:07   it was originally a musical that had [TS]

01:05:10   some funny people in it but the funny [TS]

01:05:12   people kind of took over it so they're [TS]

01:05:14   big stretch of that they don't have any [TS]

01:05:16   mark Brothers movie Marx Brothers in it [TS]

01:05:18   and it's pretty passable as an early [TS]

01:05:22   screen musical is that does anything for [TS]

01:05:24   you it doesn't for a lot of people i [TS]

01:05:27   like monkey business a lot i think [TS]

01:05:29   monkey business has basically a [TS]

01:05:32   storyline and is very funny [TS]

01:05:34   also it animal crackers let's not forget [TS]

01:05:37   about that one [TS]

01:05:37   yeah I I think I I great the adjacent oh [TS]

01:05:40   I think that I think they're all good is [TS]

01:05:43   good but before the agreed-upon decline [TS]

01:05:45   i think they're all great i think [TS]

01:05:47   they're just great for different reasons [TS]

01:05:48   i don't think i don't think there's one [TS]

01:05:50   that's like blazing saddles we can say [TS]

01:05:52   here is a perfectly made by they nailed [TS]

01:05:55   it but but you're but you're laughing so [TS]

01:05:57   much of these movies that ok I'm not [TS]

01:05:59   here to find out here with the scorecard [TS]

01:06:00   to tell them about what where they [TS]

01:06:02   missed opportunities but yeah you're [TS]

01:06:03   right that up this isn't there's no [TS]

01:06:05   blazing saddles in there yeah I what [TS]

01:06:08   else do we want to say about a night at [TS]

01:06:09   the opera I've got a couple things yeah [TS]

01:06:12   right i love i love that Margaret Dumont [TS]

01:06:14   gets a dig in this film crouches how's [TS]

01:06:17   that for lovemaking and he says I think [TS]

01:06:19   the Europeans do it better that [TS]

01:06:21   one of the funniest movie and she's [TS]

01:06:23   great she nails so good [TS]

01:06:25   let's see the other the other things as [TS]

01:06:28   much as I i like that what the work that [TS]

01:06:30   Harpo does it is surprisingly satisfying [TS]

01:06:32   to see him get vigorously cane in the [TS]

01:06:35   open [TS]

01:06:36   yeah are you saying you didn't have that [TS]

01:06:38   coming [TS]

01:06:39   I i enjoyed the seam where were they [TS]

01:06:43   what is it a chick oh good the chicken [TS]

01:06:46   throws the harmonic out the porthole [TS]

01:06:48   that's next to me it's just like I'm [TS]

01:06:51   tired of your music get out with you [TS]

01:06:53   this is finger where everyone tires of [TS]

01:06:55   harp osu looked like the audience i [TS]

01:06:59   always enjoy how quickly the Marx [TS]

01:07:01   Brothers lock into their characters with [TS]

01:07:03   each other even like in this movie [TS]

01:07:06   Groucho doesn't know either of the other [TS]

01:07:08   two at all at the beginning and yet it [TS]

01:07:11   takes about five seconds of him saying [TS]

01:07:14   oh hello [TS]

01:07:15   all right now we'd or stick there [TS]

01:07:17   obviously kindred spirits yeah sense [TS]

01:07:19   that in the opening moments [TS]

01:07:20   well that's what I like about it like in [TS]

01:07:22   some ways you can't even tell whether or [TS]

01:07:24   not they know each other I think monkey [TS]

01:07:27   business is the only one where they [TS]

01:07:28   definitely do know each other and that's [TS]

01:07:30   only because they're all in similar [TS]

01:07:31   barrels [TS]

01:07:32   no that's about that that's what we're [TS]

01:07:34   talking about where the their first [TS]

01:07:36   meeting is when it's is when the Rodolfo [TS]

01:07:39   is a my percent Rodolfo is that is that [TS]

01:07:43   the groucho soccer goal for ruffle gets [TS]

01:07:46   knocked unconscious checkout counters [TS]

01:07:48   like okay it wasn't going on they only [TS]

01:07:50   pulling for me so I shot him [TS]

01:07:52   yeah okay and our characters know each [TS]

01:07:56   other [TS]

01:07:57   there's a scene i really like in [TS]

01:07:59   Gottlieb's box and that the action is [TS]

01:08:03   focused on God leave in Claypool and [TS]

01:08:05   they're talking and that's that's [TS]

01:08:07   obviously the focus what's going on and [TS]

01:08:09   in the background we see ground to turn [TS]

01:08:11   around and he says something to some [TS]

01:08:14   poor woman sitting in another box oh [TS]

01:08:15   yeah and he clearly offends the hell out [TS]

01:08:17   of her and we have no idea what it is he [TS]

01:08:19   says but not a pretty good educated yes [TS]

01:08:21   your present do it but yeah and that's [TS]

01:08:23   almost funny than actually hearing what [TS]

01:08:25   he says is out there goes that gradual [TS]

01:08:26   again [TS]

01:08:27   yeah alright already pulls up in from [TS]

01:08:30   the upper companies like hey I told you [TS]

01:08:32   to go slowly [TS]

01:08:33   how do i was caught the Opera [TS]

01:08:35   you save a lot of time by always playing [TS]

01:08:38   exactly the same character in your [TS]

01:08:39   movies [TS]

01:08:40   yeah it's also it's also good user [TS]

01:08:42   interface for the audience to its like [TS]

01:08:44   and at this it's not lazy at all just [TS]

01:08:46   like we go to Marx Brothers movie to see [TS]

01:08:48   the Marx Brothers that means that we [TS]

01:08:50   don't have to explain what are pros deal [TS]

01:08:52   is which goes dealing with rosemary is [TS]

01:08:54   it there's a part of me that wishes that [TS]

01:08:56   they still did things like the Marx [TS]

01:08:59   Brothers where you have the actors [TS]

01:09:01   playing the same characters are the road [TS]

01:09:02   movies with hope and Crosby half where [TS]

01:09:05   it's just done basically it's hoping [TS]

01:09:09   Crosby and now they're now they're in [TS]

01:09:11   Alaska now they're in valley and did it [TS]

01:09:14   and should they have different names but [TS]

01:09:16   it's help hoping Crosby yeah when it [TS]

01:09:19   when I love what I miss the most about [TS]

01:09:20   that is not just the there that [TS]

01:09:23   repetitive like familiar formula but the [TS]

01:09:25   idea that these are two really really [TS]

01:09:27   rich and famous guys who got together [TS]

01:09:29   and decided to bang out a movie they're [TS]

01:09:31   not taking it too seriously they're not [TS]

01:09:33   trying to reinvent the art form and they [TS]

01:09:35   don't care if it makes up a billion [TS]

01:09:38   dollars or just a good profit they just [TS]

01:09:41   are there to have fun for a good month [TS]

01:09:43   for good like 22 weeks of shooting and [TS]

01:09:45   perhaps where we're beginning to see [TS]

01:09:46   that with your Seth Rogen's and and [TS]

01:09:48   James Franco's to end your oceans 11 [TS]

01:09:51   TSA's and your ocean is a very Clooney [TS]

01:09:54   yeah it's a good formula that there's [TS]

01:09:56   this reason why of things for formulaic [TS]

01:09:58   and that's because the formulas always [TS]

01:09:59   work they've been FDA approved they [TS]

01:10:01   don't kill children [TS]

01:10:02   yeah this movie did feature the return [TS]

01:10:06   of her playing the ps4 will help others [TS]

01:10:08   play the piano but I meant to say chico [TS]

01:10:10   playing the piano and harp playing the [TS]

01:10:12   harp yeah but I feel like they weren't [TS]

01:10:14   all that confident in it because of that [TS]

01:10:16   home least surrounded them with a horde [TS]

01:10:19   of children cheering and laughing every [TS]

01:10:21   single yeah when we have you done with [TS]

01:10:24   that now i gotta say as as I had not [TS]

01:10:26   actually ever seen them do their harp [TS]

01:10:27   and piano thing I was actually excited [TS]

01:10:29   to get the opportunity to see what they [TS]

01:10:31   had going from the harp and piano [TS]

01:10:33   department but yet i was actually was a [TS]

01:10:35   little disturbed by the fact that they [TS]

01:10:37   throw through all this adoring fans in [TS]

01:10:39   there to tell me how crazy it's [TS]

01:10:41   entertaining CC well the nice thing [TS]

01:10:43   about that to the extent that is nice it [TS]

01:10:46   seems like the people watching Harpo [TS]

01:10:48   are generally are genuine they're not [TS]

01:10:50   acting they're there they're pleased by [TS]

01:10:52   his capering in this case it's extremely [TS]

01:10:56   convenient that cruise ships of the time [TS]

01:10:57   always had a gypsy dance party and [TS]

01:10:59   endless pasta bar access that's clearly [TS]

01:11:02   you have never been on a cruise it was [TS]

01:11:04   there was passion the SS olive garden [TS]

01:11:07   separated fireman friend and it's more [TS]

01:11:10   so when a man down that is a food [TS]

01:11:13   category there is an endless black bar [TS]

01:11:15   yeah there's a puppet show in the other [TS]

01:11:18   boat movie they did and if we're going [TS]

01:11:20   to do favorite lines yes [TS]

01:11:22   for me it's it it's a tie between the [TS]

01:11:25   groucho talking about the second party [TS]

01:11:26   during the contrast are the contract [TS]

01:11:28   scene and just throwing in as an aside i [TS]

01:11:31   was blind for three days and the second [TS]

01:11:33   party and party you know because I've [TS]

01:11:35   been there Groucho uh-huh but i think i [TS]

01:11:38   think the best one is probably when [TS]

01:11:40   they're in the hotel room and grouchy [TS]

01:11:41   looks over and says why don't you fellas [TS]

01:11:43   be nice [TS]

01:11:44   get out of here before I get arrested [TS]

01:11:45   and chicken comes back with now I'd like [TS]

01:11:47   to stay and see that just know just kind [TS]

01:11:51   of casually yeah that's what I think I'd [TS]

01:11:53   enjoy that last night it can attract [TS]

01:11:55   thousands sheep in those three beds and [TS]

01:11:57   have another bed to sleep in [TS]

01:11:58   you wouldn't want me to sleep with the [TS]

01:11:59   Sheep would you like Harpo and his horse [TS]

01:12:02   exactly how i like that time grow told [TS]

01:12:06   Margaret Dumont can't you see what I'm [TS]

01:12:07   trying to tell you i love you [TS]

01:12:09   haha power of call back every day go of [TS]

01:12:13   that the whole restaurant scene at the [TS]

01:12:15   beginning [TS]

01:12:16   oh yeah is is nothing but puns and I [TS]

01:12:22   mean and rapid fire just one joke after [TS]

01:12:24   another and decides where you like to [TS]

01:12:27   graduate and he's like looking at the [TS]

01:12:29   camera saying oh and I've got this other [TS]

01:12:30   joke here and then turns back to the [TS]

01:12:32   original reality i mean it is it that's [TS]

01:12:34   all it is [TS]

01:12:35   and the and that would be my favorite [TS]

01:12:37   line if you if you ever dine with me at [TS]

01:12:39   any point in a restaurant i will pick up [TS]

01:12:41   the bill and say that's outrageous if I [TS]

01:12:44   were you I wouldn't say and that I do [TS]

01:12:45   that all the time into not yet this time [TS]

01:12:47   I am I was amused by what the outrageous [TS]

01:12:49   prices its nine dollars and forty cents [TS]

01:12:52   nine dollars 40 since this is an outrage [TS]

01:12:55   if i were you i wouldn't pay it all [TS]

01:12:56   those hotel bill is 540 dollars yes [TS]

01:12:59   that's true but the dinner dinner was 94 [TS]

01:13:01   40 that threat remember his spiel when [TS]

01:13:05   he gets in the quote motor accident when [TS]

01:13:07   he's writing his trunk lock on that on [TS]

01:13:09   that card throughout the the cruise ship [TS]

01:13:10   say hey look at my favorite opt out of [TS]

01:13:12   shape i thought was you have insurance [TS]

01:13:13   no well you just like I've got a policy [TS]

01:13:15   that covers your excellency and if you [TS]

01:13:17   lose a little help you look for it is [TS]

01:13:19   only eighteen dollars if you lose a limb [TS]

01:13:21   Bobby look for it yeah one more thing I [TS]

01:13:24   wanted to throw in about a night at the [TS]

01:13:25   opera which is that the whole sequence [TS]

01:13:29   where harpos swing around on the stage [TS]

01:13:31   ropes and the backdrops are bouncing up [TS]

01:13:33   and down is so inspired in that the the [TS]

01:13:38   scenes that get you know the name [TS]

01:13:40   dropping on this or that crowded [TS]

01:13:41   stateroom and and the contract seen some [TS]

01:13:43   of the other bits but that's like a [TS]

01:13:45   whole swashbuckling movie that gets [TS]

01:13:46   thrown out at the end what and just just [TS]

01:13:49   the up-and-down would be good but the [TS]

01:13:51   fact that we keep coming coming back to [TS]

01:13:53   the stage as the ridiculous output of [TS]

01:13:56   what's happening on the ropes is [TS]

01:13:57   happening where things are dropping down [TS]

01:13:59   and coming back up and all that that [TS]

01:14:01   adds that whole other layer to it [TS]

01:14:04   yeah it is spectacularly good I'm also [TS]

01:14:07   fascinated by the anvil chorus bit [TS]

01:14:09   because he had the the special effect on [TS]

01:14:12   stage appears to be two hammers that are [TS]

01:14:14   connected to a huge source of voltage to [TS]

01:14:17   current to throw off sparks ok [TS]

01:14:19   every time that happens it's funny but I [TS]

01:14:20   look I look at those huge huge cables [TS]

01:14:23   that are part of the gags are just there [TS]

01:14:25   to like make sure there's enough of it [TS]

01:14:27   and there's enough was enough amps to [TS]

01:14:29   make sure that it's throwing off sparks [TS]

01:14:31   i'm wondering oh I wonder how many [TS]

01:14:33   people were killed [TS]

01:14:36   opera is no place for the weak I wonder [TS]

01:14:39   how but I wonder how many Harper's they [TS]

01:14:40   they went they burned through on that [TS]

01:14:42   day's shooting 30 my favorite from that [TS]

01:14:45   sequence is when he likes the match and [TS]

01:14:47   the guys apps that just that just tears [TS]

01:14:51   me up each time I see anything else [TS]

01:14:52   yes the the Hat the graduates for his [TS]

01:14:56   work with is what is wearing during the [TS]

01:14:57   party scene on the cruise ship [TS]

01:14:59   I don't understand that hat i love it [TS]

01:15:02   it's the one with like a paper hat but [TS]

01:15:04   his top is going like 40 to the left and [TS]

01:15:07   i'm trying to figure out is that this is [TS]

01:15:09   like buying a hat or they decide it's [TS]

01:15:11   funny if we make this super long and [TS]

01:15:13   every time he moves his head it just [TS]

01:15:14   flips her [TS]

01:15:15   and that there is no explanation of the [TS]

01:15:18   accents for that I don't think they they [TS]

01:15:20   said this is funny they moved on like I [TS]

01:15:22   forgot to mention this during duck soup [TS]

01:15:24   but I love during the Hat swapping scene [TS]

01:15:27   after Harpo uses the hat like a yo-yo [TS]

01:15:30   the string is clearly visible on the Hat [TS]

01:15:33   for the whole rest of the scene this [TS]

01:15:35   industry was actually visible on the hat [TS]

01:15:37   while he was wearing it last time I i [TS]

01:15:40   watch there's there's clearly a string [TS]

01:15:42   that's draped down over this the back of [TS]

01:15:44   the lemonade guy that I love that they [TS]

01:15:47   didn't bother to swap out a different [TS]

01:15:49   hat just fine [TS]

01:15:50   mm well Phil I feel like we perhaps have [TS]

01:15:53   come to the end of our little journey [TS]

01:15:54   with the Marx Brothers how do you think [TS]

01:15:55   it went [TS]

01:15:56   I think it went surprisingly well I [TS]

01:15:58   think we've pretty much decided that if [TS]

01:16:02   you don't enjoy Marx Brothers movie you [TS]

01:16:04   soulless monster yes that was my plan [TS]

01:16:08   with this episode yeah so I'm pleased i [TS]

01:16:12   and i hope i hope that if people listen [TS]

01:16:15   to this have not seen a duck soup or a [TS]

01:16:17   night at the opera that they would watch [TS]

01:16:19   those monkey business is also good [TS]

01:16:22   horsefeathers I i find enjoyable do not [TS]

01:16:26   watch knighted a night in casablanca [TS]

01:16:28   right I'll call you know for the love of [TS]

01:16:31   god no it's not good you know I i really [TS]

01:16:34   want to watch a bad Marx Brothers film [TS]

01:16:36   now I didn't like the one that's the one [TS]

01:16:38   watch love happy love happy is there [TS]

01:16:41   left last one are good friends sick [TS]

01:16:43   Roman is in that as the as the Nazi yeah [TS]

01:16:46   Groucho is barely in it it does have a [TS]

01:16:49   literal walk-on cameo by Marilyn Monroe [TS]

01:16:51   in her first screen appearance a [TS]

01:16:53   wonderful this movie produced by chicos [TS]

01:16:56   gambling debts [TS]

01:16:57   yeah yeah yeah yeah but the only one [TS]

01:17:01   based on a story by Harpo for what [TS]

01:17:04   that's worth yes it was just a series of [TS]

01:17:05   hunks doubt you know if it would have [TS]

01:17:10   been better number with the Algonquin [TS]

01:17:13   Round time but seriously watch watch [TS]

01:17:15   duck soup and 90 opera and and some of [TS]

01:17:17   the other earlier ones those are those [TS]

01:17:19   are quite enjoyable and even dancing [TS]

01:17:22   races just get ready to fast-forward [TS]

01:17:25   through the scene in the stable [TS]

01:17:27   oh yeah but watch the codebook seen yes [TS]

01:17:31   yeah they're good scenes in day at the [TS]

01:17:33   races yeah just not the one know the one [TS]

01:17:36   is not [TS]

01:17:37   yeah okay and I'm gonna wrap it up now [TS]

01:17:41   so here we're gonna get rid of sloppy [TS]

01:17:43   ending is emblematic of the way Marx [TS]

01:17:44   Brothers in getting her out at the end [TS]

01:17:47   and then it wasn't within and that's I [TS]

01:17:49   don't think they were never this sloppy [TS]

01:17:50   ambassador Trentino let's get him with [TS]

01:17:53   oranges [TS]

01:17:54   i'm looking for a needle in a haystack [TS]

01:17:56   Groucho says and then the movies over [TS]

01:17:58   and then they and then they pelted the [TS]

01:18:00   bad guy with fruit or found a guy and I [TS]

01:18:04   and everybody boo'd and then that was at [TS]

01:18:07   the end and so I would like to thank my [TS]

01:18:09   guests because we've reached the end [TS]

01:18:38   but i am telling you we must be closing [TS]

01:18:41   in Phil Michaels but they're a dancing [TS]

01:18:44   in the streets drinking in the salons [TS]

01:18:46   and necking in the parlor play dog that [TS]

01:18:49   makes everybody out there for what I way [TS]

01:18:51   I hope this episode is appreciated in 80 [TS]

01:20:00   so David you want to kick this off at [TS]

01:20:03   that [TS]

01:20:53   Scoutmaster green whatever is that on [TS]

01:20:55   the monitor [TS]

01:20:56   it looks like some kind of spa hurtling [TS]

01:20:58   towards the Copernicus yeah and she [TS]

01:21:01   opened here [TS]

01:21:02   what is that cut [TS]

01:21:06   let's try that again blend what that yes [TS]

01:21:09   that what the line [TS]

01:21:11   what's this stop that that's it take to [TS]

01:21:14   Arkham on skin bracer by men and not a [TS]

01:21:21   minute [TS]
