00:00:00   BMW has major face problems has always [TS]

00:00:04   had major fade problems that that's one [TS]

00:00:07   of the things keeps me away from BMWs [TS]

00:00:08   their face problems I that's the problem [TS]

00:00:11   and and yet well that and the fact that [TS]

00:00:12   again before but it's probably done [TS]

00:00:14   defending out like basically if i had [TS]

00:00:16   you know 40 grand burning a hole in my [TS]

00:00:17   pocket would be like I got 40 grand [TS]

00:00:20   I don't like that face and I spend 40 [TS]

00:00:21   grand face I don't like why don't we try [TS]

00:00:24   to make enough money with this podcast [TS]

00:00:26   that you can afford a BMW lease [TS]

00:00:28   well here's here's the here's the [TS]

00:00:30   problem with the BMW you also have to [TS]

00:00:31   buy me a new has to put it in because if [TS]

00:00:35   I park that car in my driveway it will [TS]

00:00:37   have dents all over the top of it i have [TS]

00:00:39   a large I guess it's an oak tree with [TS]

00:00:42   overhanging my driveway the drops a [TS]

00:00:45   cornstarch tremendous height causing [TS]

00:00:47   literally hundreds of tiny dimple dents [TS]

00:00:50   in the sheet metal and roof of any car [TS]

00:00:53   that's parked in my drop that that's a [TS]

00:00:55   problem [TS]

00:00:55   wow so so for the rest of your cars you [TS]

00:00:57   can tolerate this before be another yeah [TS]

00:00:59   i'll tell you what do you care if it's a [TS]

00:01:01   honda accord you're driving your family [TS]

00:01:02   around and don't care if it's got dents [TS]

00:01:03   all over the roof of it i and you say i [TS]

00:01:06   want you to put in your garage i do have [TS]

00:01:07   a garage but a half-time just fill the [TS]

00:01:09   junk and be the garage is that one of [TS]

00:01:12   those garages made in the nineteen [TS]

00:01:13   thirties for like carriages or something [TS]

00:01:15   and it's so hard to squeeze the car in [TS]

00:01:17   there and then you want to take this [TS]

00:01:18   really expensive car and squeeze it into [TS]

00:01:20   a garage with all your stuff hanging on [TS]

00:01:21   the side and try to open the doors and [TS]

00:01:23   you have to let the kids out before you [TS]

00:01:24   get in or whatever so basically right [TS]

00:01:25   because then i might get a few little [TS]

00:01:27   dents in it [TS]

00:01:28   yeah my entire lifestyle is not being [TS]

00:01:30   has not BMW caliber so just merely [TS]

00:01:32   plopping a BMW like the worst-case [TS]

00:01:34   scenario plopping down like you know a [TS]

00:01:36   supercar something like I would be like [TS]

00:01:37   what am I gonna do with this I can't [TS]

00:01:39   park it on the street I can't park in my [TS]

00:01:40   driveway I need to buy second house with [TS]

00:01:42   this card because it needs to live [TS]

00:01:44   better than we do when I get your eyes [TS]

00:01:47   you're very smart man but you haven't [TS]

00:01:49   thought of just removing the tree it's [TS]

00:01:51   not our tree [TS]

00:01:53   well that was good like matter we could [TS]

00:01:56   like clear cut into the sky [TS]

00:01:58   no blood never been a little bit 32 [TS]

00:02:00   makes bad neighbors and it's better to [TS]

00:02:02   have good and anyway it's not it's not [TS]

00:02:04   actually a problem because i don't care [TS]

00:02:05   if my car's get dented but we actually [TS]

00:02:07   have probably a we just in the last year [TS]

00:02:10   we we moved our driveway [TS]

00:02:13   if you can imagine what that takes two [TS]

00:02:15   to what that does to a yard it was this [TS]

00:02:17   tremendous s-shaped driveway which would [TS]

00:02:20   you know that the garage like on the [TS]

00:02:21   left side a lot and the curb cuts on the [TS]

00:02:23   right side of the lot and it would it [TS]

00:02:24   would it snaked across died when the [TS]

00:02:26   whole front yard cut the whole front [TS]

00:02:28   yard and a half and came out to the side [TS]

00:02:29   and it was all gravel anyway so it a [TS]

00:02:32   gravel driveway sucks for lots of [TS]

00:02:33   reasons and it wasn't even a very good [TS]

00:02:35   gravel and so we were you know we we [TS]

00:02:38   decided to just make it a straight line [TS]

00:02:39   so and and then put down you know brick [TS]

00:02:42   pavers Susan you know you know gravel [TS]

00:02:44   driveway is the rich person's driveway [TS]

00:02:46   marker so you're going backwards here by [TS]

00:02:47   paving it you know your neighbors are [TS]

00:02:49   gonna turn knows you well he used to [TS]

00:02:51   have a tasteful gravel driveway now he's [TS]

00:02:52   got this pavement and shoveling that [TS]

00:02:54   when it's no I know that's why is the [TS]

00:02:56   rich person's driveway and only gonna [TS]

00:02:58   bubble around right boys [TS]

00:02:59   yeah not only can you not shovel or [TS]

00:03:01   really snow blow on on gravel is you [TS]

00:03:03   surely can't plow it you really can't [TS]

00:03:05   move them off at all but this giant [TS]

00:03:08   driver took up our entire front yard it [TS]

00:03:10   was like shoveling the whole front yard [TS]

00:03:11   so well the real rich person's p stone [TS]

00:03:15   to Jeff p stone and what is that that's [TS]

00:03:17   little little rocks that look like [TS]

00:03:19   they've been smooth in a river like [TS]

00:03:20   instead of being a jagged like grabbing [TS]

00:03:21   a fish tank yet will not let their [TS]

00:03:24   smooth cornered stones instead of being [TS]

00:03:26   jagged gravel gravels jagged like [TS]

00:03:28   they're sharp edges are actual piece of [TS]

00:03:30   gravel p stone is small rocks it looks [TS]

00:03:33   like they've been smooth in a river [TS]

00:03:34   water water you know flowing over them i [TS]

00:03:37   would I don't know why anybody would [TS]

00:03:38   want any kind of ground because it's [TS]

00:03:40   more expensive but the thing of it is [TS]

00:03:42   you're both wrong because the rich [TS]

00:03:43   person approaches to have heated a [TS]

00:03:45   heated driveway and I have a story that [TS]

00:03:48   i'll tell you what i actually happy [TS]

00:03:49   about that when we get their tracks see [TS]

00:03:51   but internality it's how you can have a [TS]

00:03:54   heated driveway if you have a real rich [TS]

00:03:56   person driving the real repression [TS]

00:03:57   driveway is like a mile and a half long [TS]

00:03:59   and not helping that that so there when [TS]

00:04:02   I was very when I was 16 I drove a [TS]

00:04:06   family friends [TS]

00:04:07   ferrari and that family friend their [TS]

00:04:10   driveway I'd say what it was an ass and [TS]

00:04:13   this is in Connecticut where I went to [TS]

00:04:15   high school my parents to live and so [TS]

00:04:17   their driver was an ass i want to say it [TS]

00:04:19   was maybe a hundred yards long and [TS]

00:04:20   pretty much the whole thing was heated [TS]

00:04:22   so they would never have to worry about [TS]

00:04:23   plowing or snow blowing or anything like [TS]

00:04:25   that I kid you not see it when I so when [TS]

00:04:27   we gettin drive when i asked the guy [TS]

00:04:29   like so I know he driveways exist like [TS]

00:04:31   what can you tell me about that and he [TS]

00:04:33   basically was like yeah it's like it eat [TS]

00:04:35   you would spend way less money just [TS]

00:04:37   hiring somebody to plow your driveway [TS]

00:04:39   every winter for like the next 30 years [TS]

00:04:41   then you picked by putting the hidden [TS]

00:04:44   it's only guy i guess all you know I i [TS]

00:04:46   can go without the house but anyway the [TS]

00:04:50   reason for that is because there's a [TS]

00:04:51   giant tree on my neighbor's property its [TS]

00:04:53   it is like right across the property [TS]

00:04:56   line is the trunk of this tree and it is [TS]

00:04:58   it is such a big tree and it's in such [TS]

00:05:00   terrible shape that every single time [TS]

00:05:03   there's any kind of wind or rain it [TS]

00:05:06   drops some kind of moderately sized [TS]

00:05:07   branch onto my driveway so after [TS]

00:05:10   building this whole new driveway which [TS]

00:05:11   is really not cheaper fast to do we now [TS]

00:05:15   effectively can't use a third of it [TS]

00:05:17   because either our cars will get damaged [TS]

00:05:21   which has happened when we before we [TS]

00:05:23   learn this you know eat either our cars [TS]

00:05:25   will have branches falling on them and [TS]

00:05:27   even the most mild storms or we would [TS]

00:05:30   have to go to our neighbors and have [TS]

00:05:32   that talk with them and the idea of [TS]

00:05:35   doing that is so scary to me and I I so [TS]

00:05:38   don't want to confront them about this [TS]

00:05:40   that I'm just tolerating not using half [TS]

00:05:44   my driveway at and I don't do it because [TS]

00:05:46   of like I'm afraid of confidential but [TS]

00:05:47   it's not really fair to them even though [TS]

00:05:49   I'd illegally own like up to the sky or [TS]

00:05:51   whatever the heck the thing is I cut it [TS]

00:05:52   like I would be annoyed if someone did [TS]

00:05:54   to me this is a nice tree they have a [TS]

00:05:56   nice tree on their property one of the [TS]

00:05:57   branches happens to go over my driver [TS]

00:05:59   but like I would be killing their their [TS]

00:06:01   tree they have two trees on the front [TS]

00:06:02   lawn this is one of them looks nice and [TS]

00:06:04   then you know that's not a nice thing to [TS]

00:06:06   do it like I could just get it always [TS]

00:06:08   park but one car in the drive one car [TS]

00:06:10   moved up enough so it didn't hit i could [TS]

00:06:12   build myself a car park and do all these [TS]

00:06:13   things I really cared about the cars or [TS]

00:06:15   if I had enough money to afford a car [TS]

00:06:16   that I cared if it got hundreds of [TS]

00:06:18   double sized dent in it i just moved to [TS]

00:06:20   a nicer house that a two-car garage and [TS]

00:06:21   put the cars in but in the grand scheme [TS]

00:06:24   of things nothing [TS]

00:06:25   yeah i guess i have to wonder like you [TS]

00:06:27   know when like of all the options you [TS]

00:06:30   chose for you you've considered you just [TS]

00:06:33   enumerated for us of all those options [TS]

00:06:35   just leaving it getting dense is [TS]

00:06:37   actually the one you chose that's that [TS]

00:06:38   surprises me like knowing you this one [TS]

00:06:40   of the first time I mean I didn't know [TS]

00:06:42   it was gonna dance until the first car [TS]

00:06:44   was like totally dentist as it happens [TS]

00:06:45   basically like overnight you're like [TS]

00:06:46   wait a second you look at you can't [TS]

00:06:47   really see it unless you look at the [TS]

00:06:48   right angle and like the Sun you know [TS]

00:06:50   Glenn saw her dimples you're like oh my [TS]

00:06:52   god what's going on here [TS]

00:06:53   yeah that's what's happening I mean I [TS]

00:06:55   even today if I really really cared [TS]

00:06:57   enough I could always park one car [TS]

00:06:59   inside the driveway make sure inside the [TS]

00:07:00   garage make sure was cleared out and [TS]

00:07:02   park the other car really close up to [TS]

00:07:03   the driveway so clear like the but we're [TS]

00:07:06   just lazy just parking where they are [TS]

00:07:07   it's not a big deal and you know it's [TS]

00:07:09   not it's probably not hurting our resale [TS]

00:07:11   value because you have to be pretty anal [TS]

00:07:12   retentive even notice it like the dents [TS]

00:07:14   are like incidents there just barely [TS]

00:07:15   dimples and we haven't had any problem [TS]

00:07:17   selling our cars we want to trade up man [TS]

00:07:20   that I just that is just paste in the [TS]

00:07:22   link to some long driveways yeah thnkx [TS]

00:07:25   cover cover cover with p stone that I [TS]

00:07:28   mean that really is shocking to me I [TS]

00:07:30   yeah I what you know those are all the [TS]

00:07:33   reasons not to have the car you want [TS]

00:07:35   well that's not something I have to say [TS]

00:07:37   like it the main reason that I want to [TS]

00:07:38   spend how much more out of the money [TS]

00:07:40   that i have discretionary spending that [TS]

00:07:41   i have i would much rather have a really [TS]

00:07:43   nice TV in a really expensive Mac then a [TS]

00:07:45   really nice cars that's where the months [TS]

00:07:46   there and then like kids college funds [TS]

00:07:49   and stuff oh yeah for all the [TS]

00:07:50   responsible stuff right exactly so [TS]

00:07:52   that's it you know it i think the thing [TS]

00:07:55   about nice cars is that like it depends [TS]

00:07:57   on how much you value that in terms of [TS]

00:07:59   proportion to the rest of your money and [TS]

00:08:01   even though i evaluate a lot like I [TS]

00:08:02   realized that all the things that cut [TS]

00:08:04   like I don't have that kind of lifestyle [TS]

00:08:05   like when I've sold the big family house [TS]

00:08:07   and I'm an empty-nester and my kids are [TS]

00:08:09   gone and I you know I'm retired and [TS]

00:08:11   living much more cheaply then i can [TS]

00:08:14   afford to live in a tiny house in the [TS]

00:08:15   middle of nowhere not near any jobs and [TS]

00:08:17   spend my discretionary income on getting [TS]

00:08:19   one nice two-door car they don't have to [TS]

00:08:21   have kids you know I mean like what will [TS]

00:08:22   you answer one that fits in [TS]

00:08:24   I will probably I mean same thing with [TS]

00:08:25   my dad he had like family cars whatever [TS]

00:08:27   but as soon as all the kids left and [TS]

00:08:28   everything he retired he started leasing [TS]

00:08:30   you know nice cars that we now that we [TS]

00:08:33   were gone and we're driving them and [TS]

00:08:35   getting them into accidents [TS]

00:08:36   yeah I feel like you've touched on [TS]

00:08:38   something which I wanted to address some [TS]

00:08:39   time during the show and I'm glad we're [TS]

00:08:41   doing it kind of early i wanted to [TS]

00:08:43   address a foreign cars because for for a [TS]

00:08:46   lot like I I don't feel comfortable [TS]

00:08:48   talking about cars [TS]

00:08:49   most of the time on my blog or [TS]

00:08:52   publicly most of the time because the [TS]

00:08:55   car from talking about are expensive [TS]

00:08:56   cars and I feel like that's like talking [TS]

00:08:58   about my salary you know Gotye feels [TS]

00:09:00   awkward to me like they're like back [TS]

00:09:02   when i when i first ordered my 328i my [TS]

00:09:06   blog readership was much smaller back [TS]

00:09:07   then and I posted a picture of the [TS]

00:09:10   interior from BMWs configurator thing [TS]

00:09:13   online I was so proud like coming soon [TS]

00:09:15   like I was I wanted to you know cuz [TS]

00:09:17   blogs are about sharing this mine was [TS]

00:09:19   back then about sharing your life and [TS]

00:09:21   stuff like that [TS]

00:09:22   I was proud as i wanted to share with [TS]

00:09:24   people and like within an hour i got an [TS]

00:09:27   email from somebody saying that that's [TS]

00:09:29   really it you know that that's a dick [TS]

00:09:30   move like oh you're rich asshole like [TS]

00:09:32   something like it was it was such a [TS]

00:09:34   downer to see the feedback from you know [TS]

00:09:36   from this because cars are so expensive [TS]

00:09:39   they are they are you know that the [TS]

00:09:41   fancier cars are out of reach for so [TS]

00:09:43   many people that it's socially awkward [TS]

00:09:46   to talk to even talk about them a lot 17 [TS]

00:09:48   is it depends on what your peer group is [TS]

00:09:50   like your peer group are people who [TS]

00:09:52   value a computer hardware enough that if [TS]

00:09:57   you posted a picture of your Mac they [TS]

00:09:58   became an cool that's a great new Mac [TS]

00:10:00   because that's where they choose to put [TS]

00:10:01   their income but I don't think it's [TS]

00:10:03   enough people who put that same [TS]

00:10:06   proportion come into their cars and your [TS]

00:10:08   knee and your fans are all rich people [TS]

00:10:09   to whom that car is like nothing special [TS]

00:10:11   right and and I feel like to you know a [TS]

00:10:14   lot of people think of a car at its full [TS]

00:10:17   MSRP sticker price and you know and [TS]

00:10:20   saying that is like saying oh my god you [TS]

00:10:22   live in a hundred and fifty thousand [TS]

00:10:23   dollar house hat [TS]

00:10:25   where did you find a hundred and fifty [TS]

00:10:26   thousand dollars cash he liked it like [TS]

00:10:28   there are all these creative financing [TS]

00:10:31   options that we have 240 people for [TS]

00:10:33   things like expensive cars and houses [TS]

00:10:35   that we otherwise wouldn't be able to [TS]

00:10:36   just spend the cash for upfront and [TS]

00:10:38   you're like a lot of people don't don't [TS]

00:10:41   realize that or when when judging cars [TS]

00:10:43   that are above what they can afford they [TS]

00:10:46   only look at MSRP and and they ignore [TS]

00:10:49   the financing options like when i bought [TS]

00:10:51   my accord it was like twenty four [TS]

00:10:53   thousand dollars or something like that [TS]

00:10:55   and you know I didn't have twenty-four [TS]

00:10:58   thousand dollars i had maybe five [TS]

00:11:00   thousand dollars and I you know I put [TS]

00:11:02   down a reasonable down payment and I [TS]

00:11:04   started making monthly payments on it [TS]

00:11:05   because it was way cheaper than [TS]

00:11:07   maintaining my maxima but you know I [TS]

00:11:10   wasn't thinking I'm spending twenty-four [TS]

00:11:12   thousand dollars up front and and so I [TS]

00:11:14   feel like you know with cars it and [TS]

00:11:16   you're right it is it's a matter of how [TS]

00:11:18   you allocate your income to some degree [TS]

00:11:20   you know like it when i bought the [TS]

00:11:22   accord [TS]

00:11:23   I could almost have afforded the BMW but [TS]

00:11:27   I didn't want to allocate my income that [TS]

00:11:29   way i wanted to save more money and you [TS]

00:11:31   know build up more savings and be more [TS]

00:11:32   responsible because you because you can [TS]

00:11:35   you can be so BMW 4 or something I mean [TS]

00:11:38   you know if you're if you're reasonable [TS]

00:11:42   with the options you can lease a $YEAR 3 [TS]

00:11:44   series for probably a good 500 bucks a [TS]

00:11:46   month and yet you least the wrong [TS]

00:11:49   3-series and that's a whole nother [TS]

00:11:50   discussion for me and that area but but [TS]

00:11:53   but like you know you could you can get [TS]

00:11:55   a BMW you could have a BMW with all the [TS]

00:11:57   maintenance included everything a good [TS]

00:11:59   one for about 500 bucks a month and I [TS]

00:12:02   know it's a lot of money but like [TS]

00:12:03   relative to the world of color paint and [TS]

00:12:06   it's not about a forwarding though but [TS]

00:12:07   here's what it comes down to four people [TS]

00:12:08   for whom that money is real money like [TS]

00:12:11   say you are the person starting out and [TS]

00:12:12   you have a good job and you're single [TS]

00:12:13   and you could afford $500 much what it [TS]

00:12:15   comes down to is alright so that's five [TS]

00:12:17   hundred dollars a month and a cord is [TS]

00:12:20   like 250 with some creative financing or [TS]

00:12:22   something is the BMW 250 dollars a month [TS]

00:12:25   more better than the accord and [TS]

00:12:28   especially if you're not a car person [TS]

00:12:30   you're like there's no way like this car [TS]

00:12:32   is nicer but it's there's no way it's [TS]

00:12:34   worth double the amount per month but [TS]

00:12:36   that's exactly not as it's not like you [TS]

00:12:38   can't afford it like i could put that [TS]

00:12:40   extra twenty four dollars and that but [TS]

00:12:42   then you think well what else can I do [TS]

00:12:43   with this 250 dollars a month and it [TS]

00:12:45   took a lot of people the BMW is not [TS]

00:12:48   twice as good as the accord is just not [TS]

00:12:50   only because they did they're not car [TS]

00:12:51   people and they just like how it just [TS]

00:12:52   gets me around and that's what it comes [TS]

00:12:54   down to I think for you know for people [TS]

00:12:56   who like they start thinking in terms of [TS]

00:12:58   ya a fancy car is nice but is it double [TS]

00:13:02   is good to me as this other car they [TS]

00:13:04   just end up saying no well but you know [TS]

00:13:06   and but I think it's important you know [TS]

00:13:08   what you just said I agree with every [TS]

00:13:09   with all that you know what you just [TS]

00:13:10   said is that it is about you know how [TS]

00:13:14   much do you care about your car and how [TS]

00:13:15   much is that worth to you like for me [TS]

00:13:17   when those people when those people [TS]

00:13:19   your BMW though they assume uh it's also [TS]

00:13:23   not twice as good to him but he has so [TS]

00:13:25   much money doesn't even matter [TS]

00:13:27   right that's what the exactly where as [TS]

00:13:28   well as you know in meanwhile when I had [TS]

00:13:30   my accord I I i bought it i didn't i [TS]

00:13:33   didn't least its financing is paying [TS]

00:13:34   like 340 bucks a month or something like [TS]

00:13:37   that and it was three 4382 yeah I i I've [TS]

00:13:42   wrote that number on so many checks i [TS]

00:13:44   have had memorized for a long time but [TS]

00:13:46   but you know so going from that to the [TS]

00:13:50   BMW was like a five or six dollar range [TS]

00:13:52   depending on what you get like to me [TS]

00:13:55   that Accord was so forgettable yet [TS]

00:13:59   function perfectly fine it got me around [TS]

00:14:02   it did really mess up my back but it got [TS]

00:14:04   me around because it turns out a chord [TS]

00:14:06   seats are terrible for back problems I i [TS]

00:14:08   like the court see that's good for you [TS]

00:14:10   i'll go for short people with that [TS]

00:14:11   problem [TS]

00:14:11   okay yeah but you know but I realized [TS]

00:14:16   like I care so much about cars because [TS]

00:14:18   i'm on that kind of person like I the [TS]

00:14:21   idea of spending more than [TS]

00:14:23   bargain-basement prices on like pants on [TS]

00:14:27   clothing to me thinking about hundred [TS]

00:14:30   dollar pair of jeans makes you go like [TS]

00:14:31   you're crazy like you're dollars for a [TS]

00:14:33   pair of jeans is it really you know [TS]

00:14:34   fifty dollars better than these other [TS]

00:14:36   gene writer you know like though I look [TS]

00:14:38   at other people's decisions like that [TS]

00:14:40   the way they probably look at me with my [TS]

00:14:42   expensive BMW like I IC closes like I [TS]

00:14:46   would not get that kind of value out of [TS]

00:14:48   clothes but i would rather cut out this [TS]

00:14:51   money from a budget somewhere else and [TS]

00:14:54   assign it to a car because i actually [TS]

00:14:56   will get that much more enjoyment out of [TS]

00:14:58   the nicer car and I feel like failing to [TS]

00:15:00   understand these different you know [TS]

00:15:03   budget allocations and priorities is [TS]

00:15:05   what builds this resentment in people [TS]

00:15:07   who either wear expensive clothes or [TS]

00:15:10   have an expensive car or something like [TS]

00:15:11   some people just don't have that much [TS]

00:15:13   money . like it's not even though yeah [TS]

00:15:15   gimme for all of us were not even [TS]

00:15:17   discussing well that the payments on [TS]

00:15:19   Ferraris you are reasonable if you talk [TS]

00:15:20   about the finest know like we understand [TS]

00:15:22   like you know when the car payment is [TS]

00:15:24   five thousand dollars a month like okay [TS]

00:15:26   well maybe not everything is relative [TS]

00:15:28   and there's a little bit some of that [TS]

00:15:30   and you know Marky brands like Mercedes [TS]

00:15:32   you even likes us to some degree and [TS]

00:15:34   certainly Ferrari or whatever where as [TS]

00:15:36   much of these we complained about Max [TS]

00:15:38   being expensive like there really is no [TS]

00:15:40   ferrari equivalent and computers there [TS]

00:15:42   is no computer that actually is really [TS]

00:15:44   really good [TS]

00:15:45   that is like you know an order of [TS]

00:15:47   magnitude more expensive as male [TS]

00:15:48   computers regular people's I don't know [TS]

00:15:50   that probably was some point but we know [TS]

00:15:52   realistically speaking there is no [TS]

00:15:54   equivalent like if you're willing to [TS]

00:15:56   spend instead of you know instead of ten [TS]

00:15:58   thousand dollars for a decked-out mac [TS]

00:15:59   pro if i spend a hundred thousand [TS]

00:16:01   dollars can i get a computer that is as [TS]

00:16:03   much better than a mac pro as you know [TS]

00:16:06   the Ferrari 458 is from like a honda [TS]

00:16:09   accord no you can't like that jump [TS]

00:16:11   thrown from the from the hundreds of the [TS]

00:16:12   Ferrari is real and there's nothing i [TS]

00:16:14   can't spend a hundred grand over a mac [TS]

00:16:16   pro and get something that's a better [TS]

00:16:17   man that much better of a mac pro you [TS]

00:16:19   know so I you know it cars are [TS]

00:16:23   interesting because they actually are [TS]

00:16:25   big physical expensive things and that [TS]

00:16:27   expense doesn't go away like you know in [TS]

00:16:30   terms of materials and everything like [TS]

00:16:32   you just can't get a car that's made [TS]

00:16:34   mostly out of carbon fiber and passes us [TS]

00:16:36   crash dies without spending a huge [TS]

00:16:37   amount of money . and you know you can't [TS]

00:16:39   get a v8 their ribs to like 10,000 RPM [TS]

00:16:42   over the help you know this just [TS]

00:16:43   mechanically there's no way to make that [TS]

00:16:44   cheap it's not like microchips that they [TS]

00:16:46   do a shrink in the next year the v12 [TS]

00:16:48   Ferraris cheaper you know so there's [TS]

00:16:51   such a range there and you know that [TS]

00:16:53   that introduces this phenomenon where [TS]

00:16:55   you know how much do I value cars which [TS]

00:16:57   is how much money do i have is this you [TS]

00:17:00   know instrumental barrier to people [TS]

00:17:02   considering other people's car purchases [TS]

00:17:04   well the funny thing about it is ever [TS]

00:17:05   since getting my 335i in i bought it [TS]

00:17:08   used and so I when I tell people oh you [TS]

00:17:10   know I got a new car and then [TS]

00:17:12   immediately it's not well it's new to me [TS]

00:17:14   and i'm always hedging it [TS]

00:17:16   oh you have BMW yeah well but I got a [TS]

00:17:18   used because I I don't want to be not be [TS]

00:17:21   able to think your full money right [TS]

00:17:22   right [TS]

00:17:23   and I and I don't know maybe that's my [TS]

00:17:25   own hang up that I'm pushing it onto [TS]

00:17:27   other people i mean obviously this isn't [TS]

00:17:28   a psychologist show but but it just it's [TS]

00:17:31   funny to me because I always catch [TS]

00:17:33   myself saying that you know yeah I got a [TS]

00:17:34   BMW buddy I gotta use you know top of [TS]

00:17:37   years our status symbols you don't feel [TS]

00:17:39   like you're bragging like Mercedes it [TS]

00:17:40   works like cuz i'm i'm actually a big [TS]

00:17:42   Mercedes fan but when you say Mercedes [TS]

00:17:44   maybe it's just a generation have you [TS]

00:17:45   I think like you no such thing rolls [TS]

00:17:48   royce it's like well yeah we're [TS]

00:17:49   mercedes-benz like not like I have a b.a [TS]

00:17:52   a Mercedes you know CSeries it's like no [TS]

00:17:54   it's not it's not that expensive it's [TS]

00:17:57   not you know I i still like I i know a [TS]

00:18:00   lot about adding because i like I've [TS]

00:18:01   gone to their dealers have test driven [TS]

00:18:02   their cars against BMWs I still don't [TS]

00:18:04   know anything about mercedes because he [TS]

00:18:06   is yeah [TS]

00:18:07   mercedes people the idea of mercedes to [TS]

00:18:09   me like I don't even consider it as an [TS]

00:18:11   option because I think oh that's you're [TS]

00:18:13   older two people you should you should [TS]

00:18:15   consider it i met in many respects I [TS]

00:18:17   like Mercedes better than BMW and in [TS]

00:18:20   many many ways they're a they have their [TS]

00:18:22   own foibles and idiosyncrasies but the [TS]

00:18:24   Mercedes you're thinking up from the [TS]

00:18:25   ABCs long dead and yeah I have a [TS]

00:18:30   definitely have a definite soft spot for [TS]

00:18:31   mercedes I i have a feeling that even [TS]

00:18:33   though like when i read about cars i [TS]

00:18:34   think for like BMWs probably more my [TS]

00:18:36   Ally in terms of values and everything I [TS]

00:18:38   think secretly and may actually be a [TS]

00:18:40   Mercedes person [TS]

00:18:41   well by the time you buy one you'll be [TS]

00:18:43   old enough [TS]

00:18:44   yeah I don't like it [TS]

00:18:48   yeah I i have i have driven both briefly [TS]

00:18:52   and not enough if the problem with [TS]

00:18:55   Mercedes is an American none of them [TS]

00:18:57   have a state I mean maybe not literally [TS]

00:18:58   i'm sure you could find one with the [TS]

00:18:59   stick but did all the altar of cities in [TS]

00:19:02   America all automatics and one of the [TS]

00:19:03   things that struck me as insane when I [TS]

00:19:06   when I was overseas earlier this year [TS]

00:19:08   was that we got a taxicab insurance that [TS]

00:19:11   was a Mercedes today and i think i see [TS]

00:19:12   class and it had a six-speed it not that [TS]

00:19:14   blew my mind commerce it again in Europe [TS]

00:19:16   you can buy Mercedes with stick shifts [TS]

00:19:18   and cloth seats and used to be able to [TS]

00:19:20   get them with roll-up windows that would [TS]

00:19:23   go back for a second you know I think [TS]

00:19:24   you know what you said casey about not [TS]

00:19:26   wanting to to seem like the rich guy who [TS]

00:19:29   bought this new fancy car like that i'm [TS]

00:19:31   extremely self-conscious about that [TS]

00:19:33   which given the Karzai by does not make [TS]

00:19:36   it easy on me because I I like BMWs a [TS]

00:19:39   lot but like like that's the i would [TS]

00:19:42   never consider buying a Porsche is a [TS]

00:19:45   Porsche I don't know please email you I [TS]

00:19:46   I would never buy a Porsche i would like [TS]

00:19:49   the idea Marcia you know a Porsche or [TS]

00:19:52   Ferrari even like an Aston Martin like [TS]

00:19:54   all those like really recognizable as [TS]

00:19:57   sports car like in-your-face sports car [TS]

00:20:00   and BMWs not will know because BMWs our [TS]

00:20:03   sports sedans like that that differences [TS]

00:20:05   such as just like you're just like the [TS]

00:20:07   one has a sports today [TS]

00:20:09   hi dragons it's a happy that you know [TS]

00:20:11   that the name BMW does have that [TS]

00:20:14   reputation but when you see them on the [TS]

00:20:15   road they just look like square they [TS]

00:20:17   don't yell out you I'm a sports car look [TS]

00:20:20   at me like that's why like you know my [TS]

00:20:21   dream cars the m5 which doesn't look [TS]

00:20:24   like much of a sports car compared to [TS]

00:20:25   you know what people usually think of a [TS]

00:20:27   sports cars i see i don't know if that's [TS]

00:20:29   really true because e39 m5 which was the [TS]

00:20:32   early two thousands that to me was the [TS]

00:20:34   pinnacle of the m5 because it really was [TS]

00:20:37   a fairly understated car and i agree [TS]

00:20:39   with you that I think the best kind of [TS]

00:20:41   sports car or fast car is down that does [TS]

00:20:44   not look fast asleep writers i guess [TS]

00:20:46   they were called long ago and i agree [TS]

00:20:48   with you the m5 and principles still [TS]

00:20:49   probably a bit of a sleeper but the e39 [TS]

00:20:51   m5 which was my ultimate car for the [TS]

00:20:53   longest time that he was in early $MONTH [TS]

00:20:56   2005 it was with the v8 with like the [TS]

00:21:00   crazy van-gogh setup and all that and in [TS]

00:21:02   that had a few badges on the outside but [TS]

00:21:04   very little else and so that to me was [TS]

00:21:06   the pinnacle and the modern m5's while [TS]

00:21:08   still good in that regard are still a [TS]

00:21:11   little bit look at me maybe but the [TS]

00:21:13   hauntings the body cladding is what does [TS]

00:21:15   it the modern high fives they always [TS]

00:21:16   differentiate with the big aggressive [TS]

00:21:18   looking body cladding you can tell [TS]

00:21:19   that's not a regular 50 but it actually [TS]

00:21:21   looks almost identical to the five with [TS]

00:21:23   m sport it's the same the sheet metal's [TS]

00:21:25   all the saying I believe it's just it's [TS]

00:21:27   just the the body cladding and that's [TS]

00:21:28   likely another the plastic wrap around [TS]

00:21:30   the fog lights in the rear bumpers and [TS]

00:21:33   the side thing it was like a few [TS]

00:21:34   accidents here and there are different [TS]

00:21:35   but most are little more than accents [TS]

00:21:38   you know I I think they're ugly it's not [TS]

00:21:40   another damn support i think the the [TS]

00:21:42   regular BMW 5-series is the best car BMW [TS]

00:21:44   best like carbon copies made in years [TS]

00:21:47   and I think the m5 is worse looking than [TS]

00:21:49   the than the regular 5-series I i do [TS]

00:21:52   agree that the 5-series is one of the [TS]

00:21:54   best cards they've made in a long time I [TS]

00:21:55   i like it way better than than the new [TS]

00:21:58   3-series like I i like that like that [TS]

00:22:01   crinkled up hood that there has it and [TS]

00:22:03   like my my 328 has that but the new one [TS]

00:22:06   like and that the current $YEAR 5 series [TS]

00:22:08   looks basically like [TS]

00:22:10   big version of my you know that so [TS]

00:22:11   basically BMW and I think this is true [TS]

00:22:15   of many carbons especially the any of [TS]

00:22:17   them that are bought by enthusiasts [TS]

00:22:18   generally speaking [TS]

00:22:20   everybody always thinks that the best [TS]

00:22:23   kind of BMW was the first one they had [TS]

00:22:26   and they've all gone downhill since then [TS]

00:22:29   that's true of everything computers cars [TS]

00:22:31   and so I did your everything several [TS]

00:22:34   wives [TS]

00:22:35   oh haha i gotta go and you know I feel [TS]

00:22:39   like like my 328 this is like this is [TS]

00:22:43   what got me hooked on BMW actually [TS]

00:22:45   zipcars what kind of that that's when i [TS]

00:22:48   was in Brooklyn during that hellish year [TS]

00:22:50   of trying to drive in and out of [TS]

00:22:51   Brooklyn to various things we didn't [TS]

00:22:55   have a car after I sold the accord so [TS]

00:22:57   we've got is a car membership and zip [TS]

00:22:58   car is is a great service we enjoyed it [TS]

00:23:01   a lot it is way way better than regular [TS]

00:23:04   renters are the regular rentals for [TS]

00:23:07   short trips for so many reasons but we [TS]

00:23:11   would always plan trips last minute and [TS]

00:23:14   so all the cheap cars would already [TS]

00:23:16   booked and the only car we could get [TS]

00:23:19   would be either the pickup truck the van [TS]

00:23:22   or the BMW 328 so obviously i picked [TS]

00:23:27   that because it was it was the most [TS]

00:23:29   expensive sedan to rent and that would [TS]

00:23:31   be the last one picked by zipcar renters [TS]

00:23:33   so i ended up driving through 28 a lot [TS]

00:23:36   because we kept taking these you know [TS]

00:23:37   various out let's go for a quick weekend [TS]

00:23:40   trip or a quick thing up here and I'll [TS]

00:23:41   you know everything's already taken from [TS]

00:23:43   of car except for this and that's how i [TS]

00:23:45   got when i first got into it like that [TS]

00:23:47   the first couple of rides we took I [TS]

00:23:49   thought why this drives really well but [TS]

00:23:51   the controls are completely asinine like [TS]

00:23:54   and I think anybody who's ever been in a [TS]

00:23:56   BMW briefly and not not like owned one [TS]

00:24:00   but who's ever just like been one [TS]

00:24:01   periodically probably thinks the same [TS]

00:24:03   thing especially if ever had to drive it [TS]

00:24:04   or fill it up with gas like where the [TS]

00:24:08   hell is the button to do this why is [TS]

00:24:09   this button backwards why is this [TS]

00:24:10   weirdly modal for some reason like the [TS]

00:24:13   buttons and controls make no sense i [TS]

00:24:15   have knobs in my 328 a car phone for [TS]

00:24:19   nearly three years I don't know what [TS]

00:24:20   they do i select still [TS]

00:24:24   and like BMWs controls make no sense to [TS]

00:24:28   anybody for the first day month or year [TS]

00:24:30   or decade that you have them but you [TS]

00:24:35   just like when you get hooked on the way [TS]

00:24:37   it drives it overcomes all and and you [TS]

00:24:40   start actually it starts becoming like a [TS]

00:24:41   like that symptom where you like your [TS]

00:24:44   captors start from that yet access yet [TS]

00:24:47   starts becoming like that like you [TS]

00:24:48   started like you know what that's [TS]

00:24:48   actually really clever design [TS]

00:24:50   oh yeah i actually like how the [TS]

00:24:52   windshield wipers have no true [TS]

00:24:54   intermittent setting like there's like [TS]

00:24:55   your pictures are hobbies like weird [TS]

00:24:58   little things about BMW but but the [TS]

00:25:00   insanity of what you're saying is you [TS]

00:25:02   were rent your borrowing renting a what [TS]

00:25:04   Annie 9328 which by all accounts when [TS]

00:25:07   that's what you ended up buying and with [TS]

00:25:09   all due respect by all accounts that is [TS]

00:25:10   a rolling piece of trash and medals want [TS]

00:25:13   it is woefully underpowered I'm talking [TS]

00:25:16   from the perspective of somebody who [TS]

00:25:17   cares about going quickly and so on but [TS]

00:25:20   no that's not what the cars are [TS]

00:25:21   necessarily are about yet didn't have it [TS]

00:25:23   wasn't a the powder 8 weight ratio was [TS]

00:25:26   not great in my car but it was you know [TS]

00:25:28   it handled well it was the engine had [TS]

00:25:31   made nice sounds and was smooth good [TS]

00:25:33   power delivery like I've I it's not [TS]

00:25:36   that's not a terrible and I really have [TS]

00:25:38   to say one of the things I enjoyed most [TS]

00:25:39   about it you know I've always been a big [TS]

00:25:40   fan of driving stick and with renter [TS]

00:25:43   it's it's almost impossible to rent a [TS]

00:25:46   stick unless you know the sports car [TS]

00:25:48   rentals sometimes we'll even then [TS]

00:25:49   usually not and so it's a car i was kind [TS]

00:25:53   of resigned to having to drive these [TS]

00:25:54   terrible automatics [TS]

00:25:56   well almost all of this almost automatic [TS]

00:25:58   now have what used to be called [TS]

00:26:00   steptronic modes because that's what [TS]

00:26:02   Audi trip term theirs and they were the [TS]

00:26:04   first ones to really do it in mass i [TS]

00:26:05   think but i thought it was Porsha [TS]

00:26:08   proportions to . well that's it for [TS]

00:26:10   right okay so anyway now all the [TS]

00:26:12   automatics have these what I call both [TS]

00:26:14   the matter both manual modes you know [TS]

00:26:16   it's like an automatic that you can you [TS]

00:26:18   can pick what gear it's in sort of and [TS]

00:26:21   these are all very different between the [TS]

00:26:23   different manufacturers like lexus is a [TS]

00:26:26   complete joke to it is a complete joke [TS]

00:26:27   that there's a few addys is ok but it's [TS]

00:26:30   backwards I it's I don't know they're [TS]

00:26:32   weird [TS]

00:26:32   very few of these will actually satisfy [TS]

00:26:36   a driver complete [TS]

00:26:37   want to be driving stick like if if you [TS]

00:26:39   people in the public are in the market [TS]

00:26:42   for a car and you like driving stick and [TS]

00:26:44   you're considering getting automatic [TS]

00:26:46   that has one of these manual gear [TS]

00:26:47   selection modes I i urge you to [TS]

00:26:49   reconsider that decision if it's not a [TS]

00:26:51   dct which we'll get to those are [TS]

00:26:54   terrible that they here's the problem [TS]

00:26:57   with those they were just two problems [TS]

00:27:00   one you never know what gear you're in [TS]

00:27:01   some of them will have a display in the [TS]

00:27:03   dash somewhere but it's usually really [TS]

00:27:05   small and kinda hard to see and you just [TS]

00:27:09   never know like when you're driving a [TS]

00:27:10   real stick you always know what gear [TS]

00:27:12   you're in you can tell even if you [TS]

00:27:14   haven't been like subconsciously keeping [TS]

00:27:16   track in your head you can at least tell [TS]

00:27:18   by the position of the gear shift or by [TS]

00:27:20   how fast your cars going and how it [TS]

00:27:21   sounds that's be like there's all these [TS]

00:27:23   different cues but why can't you use the [TS]

00:27:25   same cues with the with the tiptronic [TS]

00:27:28   type of thing because you're not you're [TS]

00:27:29   not telling from the position of the [TS]

00:27:30   year student time with well there's i'm [TS]

00:27:32   here to be different with cars that have [TS]

00:27:33   power sometimes used to find driving [TS]

00:27:36   cars that have no power i can tell what [TS]

00:27:37   gear I'm going on the right here the car [TS]

00:27:39   don't go no right otherwise it's small [TS]

00:27:41   now like if I'm in third gear and it's a [TS]

00:27:44   little bit of a hill and I push the gas [TS]

00:27:45   nothing happens like oh that's right [TS]

00:27:47   sorry second we'll just two problems [TS]

00:27:49   the first problem which exacerbates the [TS]

00:27:51   second problem the first problem is that [TS]

00:27:53   when you set a gear number in those [TS]

00:27:56   books manual modes what you're actually [TS]

00:27:58   setting is the maximum gear usually so [TS]

00:28:00   if you say be in third gear the car will [TS]

00:28:03   be in first second or third gear now [TS]

00:28:05   some of the more modern ones have a mode [TS]

00:28:07   where it like literally no listen to me [TS]

00:28:09   when I say go up are you sure you [TS]

00:28:11   weren't the worst case scenario they'll [TS]

00:28:12   do the thing where where they will like [TS]

00:28:16   you said they have the maximum and [TS]

00:28:17   there's other ones different policies [TS]

00:28:19   but usually they have like a knob or [TS]

00:28:20   something you can adjust it says no [TS]

00:28:21   actually the policy I want now is hold [TS]

00:28:24   the gear that you ran until I say so [TS]

00:28:26   even if you hit the rev limiter just cut [TS]

00:28:27   off the gas like most most of those [TS]

00:28:29   automated manual automatics have that [TS]

00:28:33   moment is on the way that's true that [TS]

00:28:36   the problem is let's say let's say [TS]

00:28:37   you're cruising at speed and it's and [TS]

00:28:38   it's an overdrive and you want to pass [TS]

00:28:40   somebody so you you you know drop down [TS]

00:28:43   to you know 54th whatever and you step [TS]

00:28:45   on it if you step on it and a stick and [TS]

00:28:49   you're in too high of gear [TS]

00:28:51   nothing happens if you step on it and [TS]

00:28:54   your to have a gear in both manual mode [TS]

00:28:55   of an automatic it will step down for [TS]

00:28:58   you and almost done that last thing some [TS]

00:28:59   of them have a mode where they just [TS]

00:29:01   literally okay you just tell me exactly [TS]

00:29:02   what to do and I will obey your commands [TS]

00:29:04   hundreds and I'll stay in the i would [TS]

00:29:05   like to hear this is the one thing [TS]

00:29:07   people can email me about i would like [TS]

00:29:08   to hear what cars have that mode that [TS]

00:29:10   aren't sports cars with DC's all that [TS]

00:29:14   mean their sporty cars and not it [TS]

00:29:16   doesn't have anything to do with that [TS]

00:29:17   being a dual-clutch or anything like [TS]

00:29:19   that like this even just with a big [TS]

00:29:20   splash box of torque converter they like [TS]

00:29:22   to put some sort of little thing where [TS]

00:29:23   you can tell it ok stupid / box being [TS]

00:29:27   second being there being forth and yes [TS]

00:29:28   the default water is always like oh you [TS]

00:29:30   know will mostly be the shifting for you [TS]

00:29:31   and this is kind of a suggestion or [TS]

00:29:33   maximum but even those i think they put [TS]

00:29:35   in this is so easy going to do is just [TS]

00:29:36   software it's like all right well like [TS]

00:29:38   it's the motor like you want to go out [TS]

00:29:39   and pass and you push the pedal down if [TS]

00:29:41   you forgot to hit the little [TS]

00:29:41   flappy-paddle thing to go down to girls [TS]

00:29:44   not going to go anywhere and same thing [TS]

00:29:45   with the upshifting we'll just we'll [TS]

00:29:46   just go up to the rev limiter and we [TS]

00:29:48   won't upshift for you will just cut off [TS]

00:29:50   the gas [TS]

00:29:50   sorry hit the paddle that mean the [TS]

00:29:52   problem with those is that when it does [TS]

00:29:54   second-guess you it it makes it more [TS]

00:29:57   likely that you will mentally lose track [TS]

00:29:59   of look you're in [TS]

00:30:00   that's what i was getting at so I guess [TS]

00:30:02   that's true especially if it's [TS]

00:30:03   especially if it's a it's actual [TS]

00:30:05   automatic with the torque converter like [TS]

00:30:06   what it is you're isolated from like the [TS]

00:30:09   engine revs and matching up to the the [TS]

00:30:11   car it's not you know it's not fully [TS]

00:30:13   engaged all the time something that's [TS]

00:30:14   hard i would never buy one of these [TS]

00:30:15   things and if i did buy that pretend it [TS]

00:30:17   didn't exist because I don't know who [TS]

00:30:19   would want to do that it doesn't seem [TS]

00:30:21   like a good time to me what so when i [TS]

00:30:22   was doing my year of zipcar the reason [TS]

00:30:26   why it one of the reasons why i kept [TS]

00:30:27   hitting 328 even though it was so [TS]

00:30:29   expensive and i thought all the controls [TS]

00:30:30   are confusing is because it had by far [TS]

00:30:33   the best both manual mode i've ever used [TS]

00:30:35   and now I find better ones but at the [TS]

00:30:38   time i mean it was it was so good and so [TS]

00:30:42   it was a way for me to simulate and and [TS]

00:30:44   i would i would keep it in manual [TS]

00:30:46   shifting mode all the time you know [TS]

00:30:48   backing up parking all the time just to [TS]

00:30:50   give me some taste of driving stick [TS]

00:30:53   well the interesting thing about the [TS]

00:30:54   BMW's is the automatics have and i [TS]

00:30:56   forget what they call it like a step [TS]

00:30:58   down mode or something like that and so [TS]

00:31:00   whether or not you're in manual mode if [TS]

00:31:01   i'm not mistaken if you floor it you [TS]

00:31:03   actually push push past a stop and then [TS]

00:31:07   there's like another centimeter of depth [TS]

00:31:10   to the gas pedal and so in the theory [TS]

00:31:12   being when you're in full on automatic [TS]

00:31:14   mode and you really need to get up the [TS]

00:31:16   road [TS]

00:31:17   that's kind of like a holy go button [TS]

00:31:20   that's just by pushing the gas all the [TS]

00:31:22   way the floor and then you push it just [TS]

00:31:23   a little bit more kind of the same way [TS]

00:31:25   when you're trying to go into reverse [TS]

00:31:27   and in a proper six-speed you push the [TS]

00:31:30   stick to the wall in a BMW anyway you [TS]

00:31:31   push the stick to the left and then you [TS]

00:31:33   push it just a little bit further in [TS]

00:31:34   forward and that's why getting reverse [TS]

00:31:36   did you ever notice that when you're [TS]

00:31:37   driving 328 i don't think so no I i [TS]

00:31:39   think that i was always doing the you [TS]

00:31:42   know that the manual shifting of the [TS]

00:31:43   automatic and Andy for the most part you [TS]

00:31:47   know because I spent so long either [TS]

00:31:50   owning automatics because that the [TS]

00:31:51   corporate automatic ahead so that's [TS]

00:31:53   another story being spent so long on [TS]

00:31:55   automatics or renting them i've tried [TS]

00:31:59   out the bolt manual mode of a lot of [TS]

00:32:01   automatics and by far the one I like the [TS]

00:32:04   best with BMWs and and and now i know i [TS]

00:32:08   did this might be a separate episode i [TS]

00:32:12   did a a race day with BMW with an event [TS]

00:32:16   we take a bunch of em cars on a track [TS]

00:32:17   and so I got to drive the current m3 and [TS]

00:32:21   m5 both of which had a dual-clutch [TS]

00:32:24   transmissions with you know flappy [TS]

00:32:26   paddles basically automated manuals and [TS]

00:32:29   those are completely different you would [TS]

00:32:31   think they're not but trust me they are [TS]

00:32:33   like you would think that an automatic [TS]

00:32:36   that has a manual shifting my wouldn't [TS]

00:32:38   think that it's okay [TS]

00:32:40   believe me they're different yeah I know [TS]

00:32:42   you know I I was very skeptical of those [TS]

00:32:45   you know before we started driving when [TS]

00:32:47   i said when i got any of these cars were [TS]

00:32:48   not configured to be sticks and I was [TS]

00:32:51   very skeptical like okay so I'm at this [TS]

00:32:53   racetrack driving these race cars and [TS]

00:32:55   what why are you so you you must not [TS]

00:32:57   know a lot about racing because writing [TS]

00:32:58   is all all switch to that ages ago right [TS]

00:33:01   well I didn't know much every second and [TS]

00:33:03   it is the readers a reason although all [TS]

00:33:05   the formula 1 cars have been like that [TS]

00:33:07   for ages like because it's faster like [TS]

00:33:09   is not doing it because they don't want [TS]

00:33:11   that the they didn't want the poor [TS]

00:33:12   racecar drivers that not have to shift [TS]

00:33:14   so much too big because [TS]

00:33:15   makes your cargo around the track faster [TS]

00:33:17   well and it also in a dct is amazing for [TS]

00:33:20   a number i I had never been one before [TS]

00:33:22   this day and and it was shocking how [TS]

00:33:23   good it was [TS]

00:33:24   I mean one of the things that that that [TS]

00:33:26   stick driver should be able to [TS]

00:33:27   appreciate who are you know purists who [TS]

00:33:29   the people who would order the new m5 [TS]

00:33:31   with a stick you know purest would argue [TS]

00:33:34   you know you don't have the field all [TS]

00:33:35   this of believe me i know i am a stick . [TS]

00:33:37   however the dct is better in so many [TS]

00:33:41   ways that make like for instance when [TS]

00:33:44   you shift the next year there is zero [TS]

00:33:47   delay you you push the paddle and you're [TS]

00:33:49   just in that gear like it's it's a very [TS]

00:33:51   weird thing for a stick driver to [TS]

00:33:53   experience the first time at a weird [TS]

00:33:56   awesome thing you just hit the pedal [TS]

00:33:58   you're just there is no delay and [TS]

00:33:59   there's no loss of power you know like [TS]

00:34:01   you don't have to temporarily release [TS]

00:34:03   the gas to change gears and then go back [TS]

00:34:05   on the gas [TS]

00:34:06   there's just no loss of your sin the [TS]

00:34:08   next year it's amazing the mechanics [TS]

00:34:10   behind that or are just fascinating i [TS]

00:34:13   mean insured it's basically two [TS]

00:34:15   different gear boxes that are kind of [TS]

00:34:16   stapled together around the same [TS]

00:34:18   driveshaft if you will and i think i got [TS]

00:34:19   that term wrong but didn't want a little [TS]

00:34:22   eyeliner shows a good terms wrong [TS]

00:34:24   yeah yeah definitely but i agree with [TS]

00:34:27   you a friend of mine had a Volkswagen or [TS]

00:34:29   32 which was one of the earlier [TS]

00:34:32   dual-clutch transmissions and while for [TS]

00:34:34   a litany of reasons that car was not [TS]

00:34:37   really my cup of tea [TS]

00:34:38   it was still one of the best . squirt [TS]

00:34:40   cars I've ever driven in the sense that [TS]

00:34:42   you . the wheel you mash the gas and it [TS]

00:34:44   will go and it had you know a Haldex [TS]

00:34:46   four-wheel-drive system that for the [TS]

00:34:47   most part we'll just sort itself out and [TS]

00:34:49   into your point it would shift [TS]

00:34:51   blindingly fast and by modern standards [TS]

00:34:53   because that car was I don't like a late [TS]

00:34:55   to thousands and by modern standards [TS]

00:34:57   that shifted heinous Lee slowly and so [TS]

00:35:00   it it [TS]

00:35:02   i I don't know I were actually pitched [TS]

00:35:05   to the magazine and I wish I knew [TS]

00:35:06   somebody that worked there an article [TS]

00:35:08   about how the dct is is a very weird [TS]

00:35:11   thing for purists like you were saying [TS]

00:35:13   and I don't know what to make of it and [TS]

00:35:16   I'm sad because I don't know if a proper [TS]

00:35:18   human operated clutch as long for this [TS]

00:35:20   world [TS]

00:35:21   well you know before that before the [TS]

00:35:22   DCPS became common and still in the race [TS]

00:35:25   cars and also still and i believe the [TS]

00:35:26   latest round of Ferraris they go with [TS]

00:35:28   the single clock [TS]

00:35:28   automated manual because ships faster [TS]

00:35:31   because it only has one thing to engage [TS]

00:35:32   and disengage and the reason you don't [TS]

00:35:34   see that in like regular people cars [TS]

00:35:35   it's because it's harsher like the [TS]

00:35:37   dual-clutch lets you not feel like you [TS]

00:35:39   know when you have 600 horsepower [TS]

00:35:40   slamming the next year that he doesn't [TS]

00:35:42   rattle your bones but in race cars they [TS]

00:35:44   don't care about your bones and Ferraris [TS]

00:35:46   they also you know I think it's a [TS]

00:35:48   Ferrari Lamborghini one of the one of [TS]

00:35:49   the two big brands still sticking with [TS]

00:35:51   single clutch because Marcus sound like [TS]

00:35:53   you're instantly netgear well these guys [TS]

00:35:54   are measuring their shift times in [TS]

00:35:56   milliseconds I like well that's 20 [TS]

00:35:58   milliseconds and this is 15 so we're [TS]

00:35:59   sticking with single clutch like that's [TS]

00:36:01   the round that there n whereas how fast [TS]

00:36:03   can you shift with the lever and a [TS]

00:36:05   clutch and letting off the gas and doing [TS]

00:36:07   all that stuff obviously the machine is [TS]

00:36:08   gonna win and they've been holding this [TS]

00:36:09   stuff and known formula one racing for [TS]

00:36:11   years and years so those guys are like [TS]

00:36:13   dual-clutch maybe a little bit soft for [TS]

00:36:15   us we're gonna stick with single [TS]

00:36:16   collection while but they had single [TS]

00:36:18   electron donating manuals and like [TS]

00:36:19   people cars and they were brutal like [TS]

00:36:21   people didn't like them because it would [TS]

00:36:22   hurt their body my next shift gears [TS]

00:36:24   under heavy acceleration but that you [TS]

00:36:27   know so that it it is kind of like a [TS]

00:36:28   softening where I mean it's not it's not [TS]

00:36:30   a slash box with something telling of [TS]

00:36:33   the shift but the dual clutch is kind of [TS]

00:36:35   an evolution of like like humans are [TS]

00:36:37   going to have to drive this and we don't [TS]

00:36:38   want them to hurt their delicate bodies [TS]

00:36:40   so it's fast enough it's like it's 55 [TS]

00:36:42   milliseconds instead of 12 like the [TS]

00:36:44   Ferrari single culture whatever but [TS]

00:36:45   fifty five milliseconds don't think it's [TS]

00:36:47   instant and it's working I guess yeah [TS]

00:36:48   because yeah because as you know it [TS]

00:36:50   isn't it isn't actually incident but it [TS]

00:36:52   feels you know especially when you come [TS]

00:36:54   from a stick when you come from [TS]

00:36:56   relatively slow gearshifts of trying to [TS]

00:36:58   do it yourself manually even the best [TS]

00:37:00   stick drivers can't do it in 55 [TS]

00:37:02   milliseconds and did you see they also [TS]

00:37:04   have now this is that the other trend i [TS]

00:37:05   guess it's probably smart a gimmick to [TS]

00:37:06   sell things but late for what they have [TS]

00:37:08   now is they'll sell you a stick but it's [TS]

00:37:10   a red matching stick nissan has not just [TS]

00:37:12   someone you so when you do it down shift [TS]

00:37:14   you don't have to heel toe and blip the [TS]

00:37:16   throttle or whenever it will read match [TS]

00:37:17   for you when you downshift so which is [TS]

00:37:19   like okay guys I know you want to stick [TS]

00:37:22   if you had a paddle we would do we would [TS]

00:37:23   do this for you with with our engine [TS]

00:37:25   computer if you did the panels but you [TS]

00:37:26   want to move the stick so when you move [TS]

00:37:28   the stick will do the engine rev [TS]

00:37:29   matching for you and and I guess that [TS]

00:37:32   could be kind of my friend has one of [TS]

00:37:34   the new Nissans ease and he says it's he [TS]

00:37:36   says it's fine i have to try and see [TS]

00:37:38   what's that sounds terrible to me it [TS]

00:37:40   seems like thats blending [TS]

00:37:42   the worst of both it's like like you [TS]

00:37:43   have you you're having this automation [TS]

00:37:46   which ruins a lot of the purity and and [TS]

00:37:48   well you can turn it off [TS]

00:37:49   okay you can turn it off and I guess [TS]

00:37:51   it's fun right they did same thing with [TS]

00:37:53   stability control traction control like [TS]

00:37:55   you know all these cars like a mandated [TS]

00:37:57   i believe its ethics every single car [TS]

00:37:59   sold in the US and 2012 model year later [TS]

00:38:01   has become a stability control one of [TS]

00:38:03   the u.s. standards is so yeah something [TS]

00:38:05   like that [TS]

00:38:05   come in yet so it's got to be in [TS]

00:38:06   everything and then on most cars they [TS]

00:38:08   give you mode turned off you know [TS]

00:38:09   down down down down down and in one mode [TS]

00:38:11   usually on all of them is completely off [TS]

00:38:13   which is kind of hilarious video so you [TS]

00:38:15   like he's a viper with 650 horsepower [TS]

00:38:17   you can drive that thing with [TS]

00:38:19   disabilities I could turn the stability [TS]

00:38:20   control totally off like the best race [TS]

00:38:22   car drivers in the world maybe maybe [TS]

00:38:24   might be faster with everything off the [TS]

00:38:26   normal person just going to spin and [TS]

00:38:28   kill themselves like it's just too much [TS]

00:38:29   for our so like you know ever even even [TS]

00:38:32   the car magazines like we turned it down [TS]

00:38:34   to all the way except the last setting [TS]

00:38:36   like so now will interfere when it looks [TS]

00:38:38   like we're gonna die [TS]

00:38:39   it gives us enough rope to almost hang [TS]

00:38:41   ourselves if we turn off with a spin our [TS]

00:38:42   wheels the whole entire time so you know [TS]

00:38:45   that the all these features of like red [TS]

00:38:46   matching and stuff like that like they [TS]

00:38:48   probably come with things like are you [TS]

00:38:50   want to turn off like you don't have to [TS]

00:38:51   pull fuses you don't have to upgrade [TS]

00:38:52   your computer just a dial and you can [TS]

00:38:54   turn it all the way to the I know what [TS]

00:38:56   I'm doing more didn't see how well you [TS]

00:38:57   don't maybe there was some warning [TS]

00:38:58   messages and you know they'll make you [TS]

00:39:00   agree or something and that's how the [TS]

00:39:01   Red matching is just making it slower so [TS]

00:39:03   that's fine too turned on right now I [TS]

00:39:04   finally we want to match to whatever you [TS]

00:39:06   know I feel like you know for a while [TS]

00:39:08   you know from from when i was looking to [TS]

00:39:11   buy my maxima and in 2002 from then [TS]

00:39:15   until really probably the last few years [TS]

00:39:17   it was looking pretty bleak to be a [TS]

00:39:20   stick fan because it was looking like [TS]

00:39:21   sticks for going extinct and it was they [TS]

00:39:25   are well they are however you know now I [TS]

00:39:28   feel like we're getting some of these [TS]

00:39:30   like things like do clutches and and you [TS]

00:39:33   know like a more advanced sticks like [TS]

00:39:35   what you're describing the rev matching [TS]

00:39:36   thing I feel like we're getting things [TS]

00:39:38   that are gonna make transition a little [TS]

00:39:40   easier like for me the dual-clutch was [TS]

00:39:42   the very first time I had ever said i [TS]

00:39:44   can give up my stick for this and be [TS]

00:39:46   very happy with it and and be and [TS]

00:39:48   actually be happier with it and i would [TS]

00:39:50   rather have a dual-clutch then it just [TS]

00:39:52   sticks aren't going away because no one [TS]

00:39:54   cares about perform [TS]

00:39:55   driving the sticks are going away [TS]

00:39:56   because something different is better at [TS]

00:39:58   performance driving that's what that's [TS]

00:40:00   like that they're being replaced it's [TS]

00:40:02   not as if like all of a sudden you know [TS]

00:40:04   your your honda accord is going to come [TS]

00:40:06   with an automated manual transmission [TS]

00:40:07   know that you know the doomsday [TS]

00:40:09   scenarios their your hundred come to the [TS]

00:40:10   CVT which I hope never happens but but [TS]

00:40:12   yeah it's just it's just that upper [TS]

00:40:14   seven percent of the market that's all [TS]

00:40:15   going to turn over the sticks are going [TS]

00:40:17   to go away there are going to be [TS]

00:40:18   replaced with automated manuals because [TS]

00:40:20   automated manuals make you go faster and [TS]

00:40:23   people are gonna complain right now my [TS]

00:40:25   day I need the tiller to you know like [TS]

00:40:27   it's full just died and then right i [TS]

00:40:29   mean at some point complaining about you [TS]

00:40:31   know having having to settle for a [TS]

00:40:33   dual-clutch or something like that [TS]

00:40:35   instead of a real stick is going to [TS]

00:40:37   sound like people now who complained [TS]

00:40:39   about anti-lock brakes and traction [TS]

00:40:41   control you know you know you sound like [TS]

00:40:43   that that battle is gone but I knew that [TS]

00:40:45   I knew that the days of the days of the [TS]

00:40:47   stick were over as soon as for I didn't [TS]

00:40:49   ship one anymore because that unlike [TS]

00:40:51   well that's it he soon as Ferraris no [TS]

00:40:53   longer sticks shit as the ships with a [TS]

00:40:56   stick available even as an option [TS]

00:40:58   the days are over because like that's [TS]

00:40:59   that's my you know dream car that I get [TS]

00:41:01   when I become rich and famous and [TS]

00:41:02   whatever and when my dream car not like [TS]

00:41:06   I can't even get it but I just have to [TS]

00:41:07   admit to myself the time of the stickers [TS]

00:41:09   over and like if anything I'm getting a [TS]

00:41:11   honeymoon period of like well Ferraris [TS]

00:41:13   it's going to be gone that was like what [TS]

00:41:15   five years ago four years ago four wins [TS]

00:41:17   for our stops shipping with their sticks [TS]

00:41:20   but yeah that like now that's just like [TS]

00:41:23   a vintage thing the old Ferrari shifter [TS]

00:41:25   with the with the steel gate in the ball [TS]

00:41:26   and solvent and I'm enjoying a grace [TS]

00:41:28   period now when regular cheap cars it's [TS]

00:41:31   still an economical to put in those good [TS]

00:41:33   automated manual transmission my cord [TS]

00:41:35   will have stick for you know a couple [TS]

00:41:36   more generations until I think I'm [TS]

00:41:38   stupid enough so I feel like the the [TS]

00:41:41   main VI know this is gonna sound biased [TS]

00:41:43   of course but I feel like the main [TS]

00:41:45   vehicle that would illustrate one sticks [TS]

00:41:48   are totally dead is when the 3-series is [TS]

00:41:50   no longer available with one that's [TS]

00:41:53   gonna be like next generation I know [TS]

00:41:54   that's the thing I I don't think it's [TS]

00:41:55   that far off [TS]

00:41:56   I think you're exactly right I i think i [TS]

00:41:58   think everyone was kind of everyone's [TS]

00:42:00   kind of on edge with the f30 is that the [TS]

00:42:03   2012 and forward generation everyone was [TS]

00:42:06   really on edge to see if they would even [TS]

00:42:07   have the option there because we were [TS]

00:42:08   kind [TS]

00:42:09   not sure about it Squarespace is a [TS]

00:43:00   to create an exceptional website we have [TS]

00:43:04   to consider also that that we are taking [TS]

00:43:06   a very American perspective on this [TS]

00:43:08   issue in a sense that that from from [TS]

00:43:11   what I've seen from what I understood [TS]

00:43:13   from from Britain and the rest of Europe [TS]

00:43:15   is that it's very odd to see a car [TS]

00:43:18   that's an automatic and it's very odd to [TS]

00:43:20   see a rental car or hired car if you [TS]

00:43:22   will that's an automatic and so I [TS]

00:43:24   actually agree with everything you guys [TS]

00:43:25   said but I wonder if perhaps we're we're [TS]

00:43:28   being a little myopic about it in the [TS]

00:43:30   sense that maybe you know you'll never [TS]

00:43:32   see it in America anymore but the rest [TS]

00:43:34   of the world who actually treats driving [TS]

00:43:35   as a privilege not a right [TS]

00:43:37   maybe they'll continue to hold onto the [TS]

00:43:39   house but it'll just take them longer [TS]

00:43:41   like the reason they stick with six is [TS]

00:43:42   because first of all sticks are less [TS]

00:43:44   expensive than automatics which I enjoy [TS]

00:43:46   because I by 6i pay less money for my [TS]

00:43:47   cars and so that of course they're gonna [TS]

00:43:49   stick with less expensive things just [TS]

00:43:51   have a culture of people knowing how to [TS]

00:43:52   drive stick there but eventually all [TS]

00:43:54   those stick like I mean I guess it [TS]

00:43:56   depends on what the price thing is [TS]

00:43:57   doesn't automated manual eventually [TS]

00:44:00   dropped the price where it's actually [TS]

00:44:01   even cheaper than putting an automatic [TS]

00:44:03   it's like price i think prices the only [TS]

00:44:05   price and and [TS]

00:44:06   a culture of people knowing how to drive [TS]

00:44:08   stick to what's keeping them sticks not [TS]

00:44:09   because like Europe like they're all of [TS]

00:44:11   drive and they all love sticks they [TS]

00:44:12   don't it's just that you know well they [TS]

00:44:15   they can get their cross with automatic [TS]

00:44:16   for an extra 500 bucks but they you know [TS]

00:44:18   they buy cheap cars they buy small small [TS]

00:44:20   cheap cars in their tiny narrow streets [TS]

00:44:22   and that they don't you know want to pay [TS]

00:44:24   the extra money for an automatic what's [TS]

00:44:25   interesting also is you to go back to [TS]

00:44:27   the world I know I know most the the the [TS]

00:44:31   new m5 is only available in stick in the [TS]

00:44:34   US and and the the heads of a man stuff [TS]

00:44:38   have given statements on this date they [TS]

00:44:40   were going to make one with with just [TS]

00:44:42   the dct option and the u.s. still [TS]

00:44:44   demands sticks among high-end sports [TS]

00:44:46   buyers but that it's like everywhere [TS]

00:44:48   else in the world the high-end sports [TS]

00:44:50   buyers don't want sticks they don't care [TS]

00:44:52   and I wonder if it's because you're [TS]

00:44:54   using seems like what everyday cars [TS]

00:44:56   right normally the crappy cheap patch [TS]

00:44:58   back cars will have steaks what I want [TS]

00:45:00   the right lap and on the luxury fancy [TS]

00:45:02   automatic you know types of things in [TS]

00:45:04   your sports cars everywhere else and in [TS]

00:45:06   the u.s. automatics are are much more [TS]

00:45:08   common and sticks are the crazy exotic [TS]

00:45:11   thing that sports car buyers want and i [TS]

00:45:13   have to say this is not realize that you [TS]

00:45:15   had your chord with an automatic I don't [TS]

00:45:17   like the car with automatic either like [TS]

00:45:18   and unlike any car with automatic but I [TS]

00:45:20   was shocked like I i had an accord when [TS]

00:45:22   I guess the rental they give you and [TS]

00:45:23   your car is being repaired and had an [TS]

00:45:25   automatic and I'm like this is [TS]

00:45:26   disgusting i would never put this kind [TS]

00:45:28   of hard you know is not yet think the [TS]

00:45:32   thing about automatics is like that's [TS]

00:45:33   why you like to BWW wants is a lot of it [TS]

00:45:36   has to do with software and if you have [TS]

00:45:38   you know the cameras have terrible [TS]

00:45:39   automat you know their their software is [TS]

00:45:41   the worst because it's just totally [TS]

00:45:42   tuned for smoothness and just like it's [TS]

00:45:44   just wondering from year-to-year like an [TS]

00:45:45   old person lost in the hallways of the [TS]

00:45:47   hospital you're like alright whatever [TS]

00:45:48   but the accord and I could tell the gear [TS]

00:45:51   was in but it was not making good [TS]

00:45:52   choices and I was like it you know it's [TS]

00:45:54   a thing where you push the pedal car [TS]

00:45:56   doesn't go and when you have a stick [TS]

00:45:57   shift that's your fault when you have an [TS]

00:45:59   automatic like all right car get the [TS]

00:46:01   hint [TS]

00:46:02   come on don't have to floor it for you [TS]

00:46:03   to do something wake up LOL yeah that's [TS]

00:46:05   not a fun experience actually makes me [TS]

00:46:07   motion sick to drive the kind of an [TS]

00:46:09   automatic so the yeah the BMW z1 to be [TS]

00:46:11   able to just came with like normal [TS]

00:46:13   automatics just plain old / boxes at the [TS]

00:46:15   very least their software tuning was [TS]

00:46:16   like intelligent and [TS]

00:46:18   figuring out like you know is the car on [TS]

00:46:19   a hill what are the current g-forces [TS]

00:46:21   what it looks like the drivers doing [TS]

00:46:22   what angles the steering wheel all sorts [TS]

00:46:24   of factors going to say i think i should [TS]

00:46:26   up or down shift at this point and if it [TS]

00:46:29   can guess relatively you know smartly [TS]

00:46:32   like wow this automatic is great even if [TS]

00:46:33   the shift quality or anything is not [TS]

00:46:35   anything special just because it picks [TS]

00:46:36   the same gear and doesn't make you want [TS]

00:46:38   to tear your hair up onto that and [TS]

00:46:41   that's when that step down or whatever [TS]

00:46:42   it was that i was that i was describing [TS]

00:46:44   earlier is really helpful because when [TS]

00:46:46   you want that when you want the car to [TS]

00:46:47   immediately understand i need to go fast [TS]

00:46:50   right now you have a attacked on [TS]

00:46:53   tangible way to do that i had that [TS]

00:46:54   button on my my very first car that i [TS]

00:46:57   drove which was over the 1981 Volvo [TS]

00:46:59   station wagon and there was the air [TS]

00:47:01   conditioning but when you really want to [TS]

00:47:02   go faster how to turn off the AC news [TS]

00:47:04   like whoa extra boost of power we are [TS]

00:47:50   generic cases but they wouldn't have [TS]

00:47:51   their own cases made and they would all [TS]

00:47:52   have used and so there were so many [TS]

00:47:54   computers sold to people that had turbo [TS]

00:47:57   buttons that did nothing [TS]

00:47:59   they lit up when you press them in [TS]

00:48:00   sometimes sometimes nothing everything [TS]
