00:00:17   season we like to do this every year [TS]

00:00:18   this was actually one of our very first [TS]

00:00:20   episodes that we did [TS]

00:00:21   I've assembled a group of people who [TS]

00:00:22   watch television shows and they have [TS]

00:00:24   comments about new shows and returning [TS]

00:00:27   shows and hopefully what you'll get out [TS]

00:00:29   of this is some ideas about shows you [TS]

00:00:31   might watch and also shows you might [TS]

00:00:33   want to point at and laugh [TS]

00:00:35   joining me to talk about the fall TV [TS]

00:00:37   season are these fine people Monty [TS]

00:00:39   ashley is there hi Monty hi Jason [TS]

00:00:42   I've been watching television constantly [TS]

00:00:44   yes you you are somebody who writes [TS]

00:00:46   about television as one of the things [TS]

00:00:48   that you do sometimes i do i write about [TS]

00:00:50   television that previously that TV [TS]

00:00:51   that's right that's very exciting [TS]

00:00:53   Lisa Schmeisser is also here Lisa hi [TS]

00:00:57   nice to be here are you writing about [TS]

00:00:58   television somewhere right now i just [TS]

00:01:01   turned up my first blog post for the [TS]

00:01:03   Atlantic so if they like it [TS]

00:01:04   I'm hoping to parlay I see ya and they [TS]

00:01:07   have to like it first but if anybody's [TS]

00:01:10   looking for somebody to write about TV [TS]

00:01:11   please consider me [TS]

00:01:12   alright excellent and you you are also [TS]

00:01:14   recapping sons of anarchy on the TV pod [TS]

00:01:16   yeah almost like and i are doing the [TS]

00:01:18   flash cast four sons of anarchy this [TS]

00:01:20   year i love it when you do a podcast [TS]

00:01:21   with people named Philip M so this week [TS]

00:01:25   I was confusing but my guess is also [TS]

00:01:27   here hello Phillip Michaels hello it's [TS]

00:01:30   great to be here on TV talk machine [TS]

00:01:31   applique wait what thank you for that [TS]

00:01:35   cross promotion that we will pick up on [TS]

00:01:37   later [TS]

00:01:38   yes dr you writing about television for [TS]

00:01:41   outlets at this point yes i'm also [TS]

00:01:43   writing about previously [TS]

00:01:45   i'm also reading for previously TV where [TS]

00:01:49   I i hasten to say I'm the second-best [TS]

00:01:51   previously dot TV writer on this podcast [TS]

00:01:53   very nice very nice gain more and also [TS]

00:01:57   hear how Dan i'm watching TV right now [TS]

00:02:00   your head but not writing about that [TS]

00:02:04   sure i'm not writing about yeah I mean [TS]

00:02:06   he'll if someone wants to pay me to [TS]

00:02:07   write about television i have a lot of [TS]

00:02:08   opinions right fair enough that's so so [TS]

00:02:11   if Lisa's it turns down your offer then [TS]

00:02:14   go to 10 more and that's what we said [TS]

00:02:15   and also David jail or is here because [TS]

00:02:19   he's on every podcast hi David a second [TS]

00:02:22   lieutenant [TS]

00:02:22   I hands on every other podcast on over [TS]

00:02:26   yeah i've got all kinds of shows to [TS]

00:02:29   point and laugh at but some of them are [TS]

00:02:31   even comedies top so because that's a [TS]

00:02:35   good sign [TS]

00:02:35   so that's what that's our panel we're [TS]

00:02:37   going to talk about the fall stuff and [TS]

00:02:39   we should talk about new shows [TS]

00:02:42   first I am going to throw out a show [TS]

00:02:45   first I and this is not a draft we're [TS]

00:02:48   going to talk about whatever you guys [TS]

00:02:49   want to talk about I thought it was all [TS]

00:02:51   interact always yeah probably [TS]

00:02:53   ok everyone gets phil hartman yes yes [TS]

00:02:56   but so I i want to talk about the flash [TS]

00:02:59   which is on the CW and I've been [TS]

00:03:03   watching and I don't watch [TS]

00:03:04   i I don't I never watch smallville I [TS]

00:03:06   don't watch arrow I'm like four episodes [TS]

00:03:09   in the first season of arrow i hear its [TS]

00:03:10   good people like it but I've been [TS]

00:03:12   watching the flash and I I've been [TS]

00:03:15   really enjoying it i think it's a lot of [TS]

00:03:16   fun [TS]

00:03:17   what are you getting lisa is oh my god [TS]

00:03:19   yes [TS]

00:03:20   first of all I'd i am a huge huge arrow [TS]

00:03:23   fan and one of these days I'm going to [TS]

00:03:25   have to Shanghai somebody else into [TS]

00:03:27   talking about it with me so it's not [TS]

00:03:28   just a 40 minute podcast and be going I [TS]

00:03:30   know damn good and you can be there [TS]

00:03:33   I'm all for that yeah we have to talk [TS]

00:03:35   about John Barrowman because he's just [TS]

00:03:36   the best oh my gosh um but I I've been [TS]

00:03:41   enjoying the flash but it's nice to have [TS]

00:03:43   a superhero series where the superhero [TS]

00:03:45   is not particularly conflicted about his [TS]

00:03:47   burden or his responsibilities and he [TS]

00:03:50   appears to have interests outside of his [TS]

00:03:52   feelings and yes and thanks to do a job [TS]

00:03:57   tom cab and Jesse L Martin's is kind of [TS]

00:04:00   killing it is the you know they did that [TS]

00:04:01   to you kids dad figure as a dad cop [TS]

00:04:05   yesterday but but his razor so it's not [TS]

00:04:08   just you just one forearm is his name i [TS]

00:04:10   think i think i'm lieutenant dad copped [TS]

00:04:12   that is actually i think what makes him [TS]

00:04:14   so effective his life he brings a little [TS]

00:04:16   bit of gravitas to it so it's not like [TS]

00:04:18   all you kids who were 22 years old [TS]

00:04:21   it's like a lot of emotional resonance [TS]

00:04:22   some of us have jobs here [TS]

00:04:24   yeah and I love Tom Cavanagh performance [TS]

00:04:26   so far because they have found yes they [TS]

00:04:28   have found the right role for his brand [TS]

00:04:30   of kind of twitchy weird and ability [TS]

00:04:33   that was you know that was the thing [TS]

00:04:35   that was [TS]

00:04:36   always a little unsettling about a dude [TS]

00:04:37   is is this is a stalker who bought a [TS]

00:04:39   bowling alley and then have someone out [TS]

00:04:41   there out of mary rogers county wearing [TS]

00:04:44   hers on cute with it there's like this [TS]

00:04:46   weird undercurrent of like it could it [TS]

00:04:47   could have gone either way he could have [TS]

00:04:49   wanted to find Carol Bessie's face one [TS]

00:04:50   of those days that Lord out and [TS]

00:04:55   admittedly Edward have been much more [TS]

00:04:56   enjoyable have an episode ended with EDD [TS]

00:04:59   stabbing someone [TS]

00:05:00   lovely Michael Ian Black yeah but it's [TS]

00:05:03   here his whole family [TS]

00:05:06   I'm a restrained damage genius-guy until [TS]

00:05:08   i get to my magical Braille script from [TS]

00:05:10   the future and read newspapers from 20 [TS]

00:05:13   years for nothing that's great okay good [TS]

00:05:15   haha i love also waiting and waiting [TS]

00:05:17   they're gonna be still be newspapers one [TS]

00:05:18   hears no that'sthat's bets book that's [TS]

00:05:22   actually can do Sabres believes [TS]

00:05:24   believable thing about this show [TS]

00:05:26   make him run fast sure but newspapers no [TS]

00:05:28   actually one thing that made me laugh as [TS]

00:05:30   they wanted it so badly to be a [TS]

00:05:31   newspaper from the future but they're [TS]

00:05:32   like this is implausible so it's like a [TS]

00:05:34   web page from the future yeah okay I [TS]

00:05:37   guess whatever at least it's like a nap [TS]

00:05:39   where he's loading the iphoto the future [TS]

00:05:41   and it's embedded in his skull and he's [TS]

00:05:43   like oh and I see from my eye out that [TS]

00:05:45   I'm just glad the headline wasn't [TS]

00:05:47   something along the lines of you won't [TS]

00:05:49   believe what happened to the flash up [TS]

00:05:51   the brain newspaper would like to send [TS]

00:05:53   you push notification there's actually [TS]

00:05:55   an easter egg in that in that newspaper [TS]

00:05:56   to which which talks about a Wayne [TS]

00:05:59   Enterprises merger with Queen [TS]

00:06:00   consolidated oh really i'm getting yeah [TS]

00:06:03   yes the whole shows full of Easter eggs [TS]

00:06:05   one thing i love about it is that just [TS]

00:06:07   it's packed like every character is [TS]

00:06:11   named the secret identity of some d-list [TS]

00:06:13   superhero yeah so if you know your stuff [TS]

00:06:16   you can be like that guy's vibe [TS]

00:06:18   he's gonna start breakdancing any second [TS]

00:06:20   causing earthquakes [TS]

00:06:21   incidentally I that character cisco is [TS]

00:06:24   also i love that they've used him as [TS]

00:06:26   sort of the audience proxy in that so [TS]

00:06:29   the flash has the most probably i would [TS]

00:06:31   argue the most ridiculous supervillain [TS]

00:06:32   nemesis [TS]

00:06:33   yeah he's right mindset to come up with [TS]

00:06:37   the name from which we haven't really [TS]

00:06:38   because i'm just waiting for all these [TS]

00:06:40   moments with like McLean captain [TS]

00:06:41   boomerangs can have to show up [TS]

00:06:43   eventually and you just know he's gonna [TS]

00:06:44   be like oh yeah the captain Byrne [TS]

00:06:46   Captain Cold [TS]

00:06:47   more master come on it's the outback [TS]

00:06:50   assaulter in the like Cisco shut up [TS]

00:06:52   because the good [TS]

00:06:54   no no wait it's the little Menace know [TS]

00:06:57   so I loved one of the things i like [TS]

00:06:58   about the grant gustin is that his name [TS]

00:07:01   yes yeah adorable oh my gosh she's above [TS]

00:07:04   zero first of these it's funny because [TS]

00:07:06   he's playing like 22 but for 23 or [TS]

00:07:09   whatever which is his actual age but [TS]

00:07:11   he's a kind of actor he's an actor of an [TS]

00:07:12   age that they would just cast him as a [TS]

00:07:14   high school kid and say sure he's a high [TS]

00:07:16   school kid except he's in this he's not [TS]

00:07:18   but he's really likable and seems really [TS]

00:07:21   young so you get the sense that he's [TS]

00:07:22   he's like young and idealistic and just [TS]

00:07:24   learning about the world and but what I [TS]

00:07:27   really like about it is it's got that [TS]

00:07:28   almost like that first that like the Sam [TS]

00:07:30   Raimi's spider-man movies kind of thing [TS]

00:07:32   where it's like light like Peter Parker [TS]

00:07:34   he's like just this guy he's narrating [TS]

00:07:35   his own life and it's like this stuff [TS]

00:07:37   happen to me i'm trying to figure it out [TS]

00:07:39   he's really likable character and and [TS]

00:07:41   and it except without that like super XD [TS]

00:07:44   mean his he's got the history and his [TS]

00:07:46   dad's in jail and all that and yet he [TS]

00:07:47   did he never seems like a wet blanket [TS]

00:07:48   which I like i have to point out i am [TS]

00:07:51   glad you mentioned spider-man here [TS]

00:07:52   because i'm really looking forward to in [TS]

00:07:53   10 years when Grant Gustin play [TS]

00:07:55   spider-man [TS]

00:07:55   yeah that's where things are going he's [TS]

00:07:57   channeling the andrew garfield thing [TS]

00:08:00   yeah yeah I guess I agree it's nice you [TS]

00:08:03   know especially in counterpoint to arrow [TS]

00:08:04   which this started as a spin-off of you [TS]

00:08:07   know an arrow is great but really on the [TS]

00:08:09   sort of like dark side and they take [TS]

00:08:10   everything very everything is very [TS]

00:08:12   realistic and gritty like there aren't [TS]

00:08:13   super powers on there and so not only if [TS]

00:08:15   they diverged and said like okay let's [TS]

00:08:17   do a show that's all about like actual [TS]

00:08:19   people with superpowers but at the same [TS]

00:08:21   time let's also kind of make it lighter [TS]

00:08:24   and more comic booky in some way let's [TS]

00:08:26   have a lighter too and let's have jokes [TS]

00:08:28   and let's have a you know charismatic [TS]

00:08:30   people here and I think it really really [TS]

00:08:32   works but it introduces problems when [TS]

00:08:34   they eventually cross those series over [TS]

00:08:36   cuz like which that it was just like [TS]

00:08:37   right how do you just not call the flash [TS]

00:08:39   every time you have a problem like oh [TS]

00:08:41   man that guy he keeps getting away from [TS]

00:08:43   us let's call our friend who runs really [TS]

00:08:44   takes like 15 minutes from to run their [TS]

00:08:46   it's come on it's easy and us to more [TS]

00:08:48   general that way it's hungry actually [TS]

00:08:51   really like the fact that was the that [TS]

00:08:53   was what they realized about him is like [TS]

00:08:55   wow you use a lot of calories you you're [TS]

00:08:57   gonna pass out you know I knew it was [TS]

00:08:58   coming the energy bars [TS]

00:08:59   in the justice in the Justice League [TS]

00:09:01   version they do that 285 what is it like [TS]

00:09:04   85 tacos [TS]

00:09:05   yeah I thought I was good but it's a fun [TS]

00:09:07   show I mean I remember like the flash [TS]

00:09:09   from the show from the nineties with [TS]

00:09:10   with john wesley shipp who is the dad [TS]

00:09:12   invented really nice little call back [TS]

00:09:15   but that was a that was very much like [TS]

00:09:17   the TV version of the Michael Keaton [TS]

00:09:19   Batman movies and and the this flash is [TS]

00:09:24   it's just lighter and fun and I think [TS]

00:09:29   that the the having tom cavanagh having [TS]

00:09:32   Jesse L Martin adds that adds a little [TS]

00:09:34   bit of weight to it that's really nice [TS]

00:09:35   and he's got his team like at the [TS]

00:09:37   science lab at STAR Labs and so it's [TS]

00:09:41   also not like he's a loner and only I [TS]

00:09:43   can do this like spider-man is right [TS]

00:09:45   soon instead it's like team flashes [TS]

00:09:46   there and there and there is a conflict [TS]

00:09:48   of like Tom Cavanagh says that he want [TS]

00:09:50   he just wants to take care of berry but [TS]

00:09:52   jesse martin wants to take care of Barry [TS]

00:09:54   I just gets it's a really dad it's a [TS]

00:09:56   good to my two dads reboot it actually [TS]

00:09:59   it's actually three dads if you can't [TS]

00:10:00   jail that the tensor well yeah how could [TS]

00:10:02   we forget chill dad totally Marva three [TS]

00:10:06   men and a shiner past big here's why I [TS]

00:10:08   like flashing my three dads tables its [TS]

00:10:10   kind of the exact opposite of arrow [TS]

00:10:12   where is no it's their storage spaces [TS]

00:10:14   military yeah there are no dad even when [TS]

00:10:16   dads are physically present and dropping [TS]

00:10:18   paternity bombs on on poor people in [TS]

00:10:20   there are still no dad's president sad [TS]

00:10:23   dadless show Dad freakshow even and so [TS]

00:10:26   so having s'mores exactly the opposite [TS]

00:10:27   where berries all I need you guys you're [TS]

00:10:30   my teammate like rod team flash to flush [TS]

00:10:32   rotation rate and it cuts through a lot [TS]

00:10:34   of the BS that in mind I love arrow but [TS]

00:10:37   like about fifteen percent of the [TS]

00:10:39   conflict is completely unnecessary [TS]

00:10:40   because it's it's all over [TS]

00:10:41   no no I can't too many people I care [TS]

00:10:43   about get hurt by what i do and people [TS]

00:10:45   like Oliver knock it off and they've [TS]

00:10:47   managed to cut out that fifteen percent [TS]

00:10:49   here it's great but the study of the [TS]

00:10:51   strongest parts of arrow were always [TS]

00:10:52   been team like when the team developed [TS]

00:10:55   later in the first series like ya mero [TS]

00:10:57   parts are definitely stronger parts of [TS]

00:10:58   the show and so with the flash they're [TS]

00:11:00   smart enough to be like yeah we gotta do [TS]

00:11:02   this from the get-go working there's [TS]

00:11:03   people who know who he is [TS]

00:11:05   it's not like oh I have to keep my [TS]

00:11:06   identity secret from everybody and I [TS]

00:11:08   think that the secret anything like that [TS]

00:11:10   rope is just were in a period where [TS]

00:11:12   that's kind of like in [TS]

00:11:13   low and we're not gonna do that right [TS]

00:11:15   now we're going to worry about that [TS]

00:11:17   dilemma [TS]

00:11:18   I'll be in terrible at keeping it is [TS]

00:11:20   hehe is everyone you know [TS]

00:11:21   yeah it's actually really love that it's [TS]

00:11:24   great for went on the show but the one [TS]

00:11:26   guy who was in charge of finding out who [TS]

00:11:28   you are so I i have a bit of a I guess [TS]

00:11:32   unique perspective i do why do you hit [TS]

00:11:36   the flash well because know you have [TS]

00:11:38   your the second fastest man alive and [TS]

00:11:40   for windows that exactly [TS]

00:11:42   I you know I don't like funny books and [TS]

00:11:46   I don't really like shows about funny [TS]

00:11:48   books and I'm kind of iffy on people who [TS]

00:11:50   do like you forget I know where he lives [TS]

00:11:55   I I do very much enjoy the flash I i [TS]

00:11:58   find myself looking forward to the flash [TS]

00:12:01   yeah the flash has the seal of approval [TS]

00:12:03   hey all you to listeners of the [TS]

00:12:05   incomparable you don't really care for [TS]

00:12:07   comic books [TS]

00:12:08   this is an ok show that the other people [TS]

00:12:10   who write in and say I wish you would [TS]

00:12:11   never talk about comic books exactly [TS]

00:12:13   yeah that would be me writing under [TS]

00:12:15   various aliases and I understand but [TS]

00:12:17   yeah I i like it in a way that the few [TS]

00:12:20   times I've seen arrow [TS]

00:12:21   I don't like my arrow has kind of a a [TS]

00:12:27   nineteen nineties basic cable field [TS]

00:12:29   goals were ouch [TS]

00:12:31   no it doesn't know I'm sorry [TS]

00:12:34   now if they ever do the Black Canary [TS]

00:12:36   spin-off i am watching that show that's [TS]

00:12:39   a great show but in your mind but what [TS]

00:12:43   flash is a just really well put together [TS]

00:12:46   for all the all the reasons you outlined [TS]

00:12:48   even if you're even if you don't sit [TS]

00:12:50   there with your your your DC Comics [TS]

00:12:53   checklist yeah and up until previously I [TS]

00:12:56   had no idea there was a guy named vibe [TS]

00:12:58   now I do so I've learned something today [TS]

00:13:01   i'm with you because i am a i'm a Marvel [TS]

00:13:04   Comics guy so although i love the the [TS]

00:13:05   funny books and the superhero genre I I [TS]

00:13:10   don't know any of the Baxter I mean I [TS]

00:13:12   lot like Barry Allen and iris I i know a [TS]

00:13:14   little tiny bit of flash but very little [TS]

00:13:16   and so I don't get any other references [TS]

00:13:19   and this matter because it'sit's I like [TS]

00:13:20   that it's not super angsty and that [TS]

00:13:23   there's a really nice ensemble around [TS]

00:13:24   them [TS]

00:13:25   that the main character is kind of [TS]

00:13:26   winning and you want to root for enemies [TS]

00:13:28   not you know I I like him I actually do [TS]

00:13:31   want to root for him which honestly [TS]

00:13:33   there's a lot of superhero things you [TS]

00:13:35   like yeah [TS]

00:13:36   get over yourself right but he's he's a [TS]

00:13:38   lot what Barry Barry Allen to do well in [TS]

00:13:40   and for his dad to get out of jail all [TS]

00:13:42   those things and just yell Martin to to [TS]

00:13:44   you know it embraces a his role as his [TS]

00:13:48   surrogate father and all i want all that [TS]

00:13:50   and I you know I even like you know Tom [TS]

00:13:52   Cavan eyes his mysterious future stabbed [TS]

00:13:55   and dudes rail office from the future [TS]

00:13:59   yeah i'm convinced that the dots on the [TS]

00:14:01   wall or elaborate data encoding systems [TS]

00:14:04   and the pattern not something she lost [TS]

00:14:06   all of its installing from the TARDIS [TS]

00:14:07   yeah sure you know whatever it is it's [TS]

00:14:09   not just the randomly now the only weak [TS]

00:14:11   part of the show for me to be honest is [TS]

00:14:13   iris yeah [TS]

00:14:14   yes I I feel like it's and to be fair [TS]

00:14:16   it's a tough character because you have [TS]

00:14:19   to have somebody who is is smart and [TS]

00:14:22   funny and and clearly can go toe-to-toe [TS]

00:14:25   with Barry and yet has somehow managed [TS]

00:14:28   to miss the fact that this guy [TS]

00:14:29   practically has cartoon hearts popping [TS]

00:14:31   out his eyeballs every time he looks at [TS]

00:14:32   her but the performances in quite [TS]

00:14:34   landing with me and I can't put my [TS]

00:14:36   finger on why but every time is on the [TS]

00:14:38   screen like modeling they're smart [TS]

00:14:41   enough to sort of rejigger that as they [TS]

00:14:43   I think they kind of have done with [TS]

00:14:45   arrow we asked set up a very like in the [TS]

00:14:48   beginning of that show it set up a very [TS]

00:14:49   clear sort of like love interest and [TS]

00:14:51   then they realized wow he's really not a [TS]

00:14:53   bad story at all [TS]

00:14:54   hey everyone's responding to these other [TS]

00:14:56   Jew and chemistry so maybe they'll go to [TS]

00:14:57   summer direction you can tell that they [TS]

00:14:59   lead it with arrow because they have [TS]

00:15:00   literally thrown almost every other [TS]

00:15:02   woman who's working in Los Angeles out [TS]

00:15:03   and just to see what will stick and [TS]

00:15:05   because the original it's just but I [TS]

00:15:09   like that they're doing that I like that [TS]

00:15:10   they're actually breaking free of [TS]

00:15:11   cannoneer because it it we may actually [TS]

00:15:13   see green arrow were green arrow and [TS]

00:15:14   black Canary just decide they're better [TS]

00:15:16   off as friends just but yeah exactly and [TS]

00:15:19   that'd be refreshing take on that whole [TS]

00:15:21   arc there is something I don't like [TS]

00:15:22   about flash and this is kind of nitpicky [TS]

00:15:25   and I do not apologize for it but a lot [TS]

00:15:27   of times [TS]

00:15:28   Barry will be running really fast and [TS]

00:15:31   Cisco is talking to him over the head [TS]

00:15:32   phones but this thing to don't sync up [TS]

00:15:37   at all [TS]

00:15:38   look like in this last episode there's a [TS]

00:15:40   time when Barry over ran where he was [TS]

00:15:42   going to supposed to go for by a couple [TS]

00:15:44   of blocks and Cisco's like Barry Barry [TS]

00:15:47   stop you missed it by two blocks by the [TS]

00:15:50   time you finish saying that at the speed [TS]

00:15:52   Barry was going he should have been out [TS]

00:15:54   of the city but maybe was yeah fair [TS]

00:15:58   enough haha yeah maybe he wasn't running [TS]

00:16:00   at full speed that up like a point [TS]

00:16:02   coming up because I mean there's enough [TS]

00:16:04   nerdly bring their one can truly say one [TS]

00:16:06   of these days you're going to run faster [TS]

00:16:07   than sound and we have to find a way to [TS]

00:16:10   be able to communicate with you and then [TS]

00:16:11   Tom cabins characters like I may have a [TS]

00:16:13   theory and we find out this is how he [TS]

00:16:15   pops back and forth between here and the [TS]

00:16:17   future is he's figured out how to [TS]

00:16:18   origami space and time into CB radio [TS]

00:16:22   wavelengths there's something to be [TS]

00:16:23   register time that would be cool but [TS]

00:16:24   historically flash comics have just [TS]

00:16:26   ignored this problem you'll just have to [TS]

00:16:28   go now I'm great at the speed of light I [TS]

00:16:31   appreciate our finger on why they've [TS]

00:16:33   ignored and probably one of the greatest [TS]

00:16:34   things about DC adaptations for TV [TS]

00:16:36   though no one of the great things about [TS]

00:16:38   do DC adaptations for TV though is [TS]

00:16:40   they've actually managed to throw out a [TS]

00:16:41   lot of the cannon stuff for a lot of the [TS]

00:16:42   historic problems that they're like you [TS]

00:16:44   know it's not gonna plant in eight this [TS]

00:16:46   i love that they've done that with arrow [TS]

00:16:48   where they have streamlined a lot of the [TS]

00:16:49   stuff and instead of making ride junkie [TS]

00:16:51   its just oh my got injected with some [TS]

00:16:53   crazy super soldiers to royal thing and [TS]

00:16:55   he now has a big feelings about that so [TS]

00:16:59   you know that there's no one there but [TS]

00:17:00   they also sort of tip their hat we had a [TS]

00:17:02   nice like they they don't they don't [TS]

00:17:03   throw everything out like probably you [TS]

00:17:05   know they they tip their hand and they [TS]

00:17:06   put in the Easter eggs and stuff to make [TS]

00:17:08   people who are comic fans be like oh [TS]

00:17:10   that thing I totally recognize what that [TS]

00:17:12   thing is thats related to this other [TS]

00:17:14   thing but they're not going to strictly [TS]

00:17:15   they don't they don't consider like a [TS]

00:17:16   straitjacket of like we've got to follow [TS]

00:17:18   yeah and I think that's actually one of [TS]

00:17:20   the DC I think that's why DC does a [TS]

00:17:22   better job of adapting to the television [TS]

00:17:24   universe are we need to we move on yes [TS]

00:17:27   we can move onto a flash cast we can to [TS]

00:17:30   Gotham for vacationers yes indeed police [TS]

00:17:33   and we should talk about the other one [TS]

00:17:35   yeah just Gotham that's making of DC [TS]

00:17:37   adaptations this of course is the [TS]

00:17:38   identity before before they were super [TS]

00:17:41   villains when they were clearly failing [TS]

00:17:43   its Gotham with Christina coz is Jim [TS]

00:17:47   Henson's Gotham baby but the kid from [TS]

00:17:49   the OC a [TS]

00:17:50   Commissioner Gordon and uh yeah so what [TS]

00:17:55   remember all the things we said about [TS]

00:17:57   flash having a light touch so that every [TS]

00:18:01   week when it comes on my my oldest son [TS]

00:18:04   just sees the time when he goes got ham [TS]

00:18:06   and nope [TS]

00:18:09   anyway depends get Smith does he have a [TS]

00:18:12   whole she's still but she's named yeah [TS]

00:18:14   she's a completely different show than [TS]

00:18:16   everybody else like feeling well gonna [TS]

00:18:17   finger on it when you tweeted last week [TS]

00:18:19   that Gotham is three different shows and [TS]

00:18:21   only different shows and only one of [TS]

00:18:22   them is good [TS]

00:18:23   yeah so okay so whatever and you don't [TS]

00:18:25   even want to watch that one okay [TS]

00:18:26   the three the three shows are one show [TS]

00:18:29   is a is DC villain factory where you [TS]

00:18:32   meet like all the ability was like [TS]

00:18:34   absolutely have to [TS]

00:18:35   Mr Freeze used to just be a guy who [TS]

00:18:38   liked ice cubes know to be honest that [TS]

00:18:41   sounds like the next that sounds like [TS]

00:18:42   the next dumb project runway like you [TS]

00:18:44   would have Tim Gunn and heidi klum [TS]

00:18:45   hosting DC villain factoring every week [TS]

00:18:47   Tim going to be like oh you're spend X [TS]

00:18:49   isn't isn't quite snapping to when you [TS]

00:18:51   run go make that work it would all be [TS]

00:18:53   great i would watch that this pilot is [TS]

00:18:55   especially bad at this words literally [TS]

00:18:56   like hello I just happen to be a crime [TS]

00:18:59   scene tech named Edward make my I enjoy [TS]

00:19:01   riddles but what what does that matter [TS]

00:19:02   and it's like we call we call him the [TS]

00:19:04   penguin because he walks funny bahaha [TS]

00:19:07   and look I found a card it's a joker [TS]

00:19:09   what the last episode they really dialed [TS]

00:19:13   back the edward nygma dive going to be [TS]

00:19:15   the riddler around here you just kind of [TS]

00:19:18   smiles creepily and I think that's great [TS]

00:19:20   um that's show number one show number [TS]

00:19:22   two is a is Bruce Wayne tortured boy [TS]

00:19:25   genius and asses that is a double dog [TS]

00:19:28   dragged over here and then show 3 which [TS]

00:19:31   is the sort of good one is is the kid [TS]

00:19:34   from the OC and and Donal Logue having [TS]

00:19:37   their they're good cop bad cop [TS]

00:19:38   adventures together and I kind of like [TS]

00:19:40   the interplay between them and I would I [TS]

00:19:42   ate it it it reminds me of a version of [TS]

00:19:46   terriers honest but still good enough to [TS]

00:19:52   where i go Terriers i wish i was [TS]

00:19:54   watching that right now but this is ok [TS]

00:19:56   yeah if you get rid of all the other [TS]

00:19:57   shows and also ben mckenzie I think I'm [TS]

00:19:59   totally into this show low move to a new [TS]

00:20:02   city [TS]

00:20:02   oh and [TS]

00:20:03   and then there's jada pinkett smith who [TS]

00:20:06   is no now I think it was it was someone [TS]

00:20:08   else on Twitter who said this but boy [TS]

00:20:11   she is sheets landed on that landed on [TS]

00:20:15   that character is just sticking with it [TS]

00:20:17   I think she saw one minute of Eartha [TS]

00:20:19   Kitt and then oh that's what that was [TS]

00:20:21   for like here I go [TS]

00:20:22   it feels like sort of a third wave [TS]

00:20:24   feminist reinterpretation of Eartha Kitt [TS]

00:20:26   and like they got all the sex positivity [TS]

00:20:29   in there but they kind of forgot the [TS]

00:20:30   rest of it it's it's it's really loud [TS]

00:20:32   and weird and broad and I don't like it [TS]

00:20:34   at all [TS]

00:20:35   whatever what if we took a bad Andre [TS]

00:20:37   Braugher impersonation and made a woman [TS]

00:20:39   i'm not sure telling straight girls to [TS]

00:20:43   seduce you counts as sex positive so [TS]

00:20:46   much as just weird [TS]

00:20:47   yeah well the shuttles has a really [TS]

00:20:49   weird attitude towards lesbianism too [TS]

00:20:50   because there they treat Barbara's [TS]

00:20:52   dalliance with Renee Montoya as some [TS]

00:20:54   sort of weird guilty shameful secret [TS]

00:20:55   which is complete and and it's like to [TS]

00:20:57   feel my we had a discussion about this [TS]

00:20:59   like half an hour we were trying to [TS]

00:21:00   figure out when exactly Gotham is [TS]

00:21:02   supposed to be set because parts of it [TS]

00:21:03   are weirdly contemporary so we're trying [TS]

00:21:06   to figure out if the homophobia is it [TS]

00:21:08   supposed to be like socially consistent [TS]

00:21:10   with the time the show is set in or if [TS]

00:21:12   it's just the right Israel in girls with [TS]

00:21:14   each other [TS]

00:21:15   I'm both fascinating and recalled it's a [TS]

00:21:18   show written by nineteen-year-old Boyd's [TS]

00:21:20   boys for 12 year old boys I would be [TS]

00:21:22   happy to worry about that but with [TS]

00:21:24   Barbara just hung up on wondering is she [TS]

00:21:26   actually living in a clock tower [TS]

00:21:28   oh she's the worst or does she just have [TS]

00:21:30   a lock painted on the outside of room we [TS]

00:21:32   don't I wonder if it's supposed to be a [TS]

00:21:34   mirage to the eventual oracle living in [TS]

00:21:36   the closet having like the clock tower [TS]

00:21:37   HQ and any of that old but when the [TS]

00:21:39   other times but we know that this barber [TS]

00:21:41   doesn't become oracle like her job is [TS]

00:21:43   basically to give birth to an awesome [TS]

00:21:45   robot Barbara Gordon and then I [TS]

00:21:46   disappear but I I think Barbara that the [TS]

00:21:49   Barbara Gordon character and or the [TS]

00:21:50   actress is like one of the biggest [TS]

00:21:52   weakness she tell you every time you use [TS]

00:21:54   a screen the worst character in that [TS]

00:21:56   show although all the Jada Pinkett is [TS]

00:21:57   also a senior shareware so jaded and get [TS]

00:22:00   short you're writing it you can do a [TS]

00:22:03   data-rich for the stuff and let's not [TS]

00:22:05   let's not let let's not let the kid off [TS]

00:22:08   the hook for p90 Bruce Wayne only the [TS]

00:22:10   other kid to all the Salina Kyle child [TS]

00:22:13   is [TS]

00:22:13   yes Bob I have a well-known animus [TS]

00:22:15   against child actors anyway haha [TS]

00:22:17   actually I i really i like to I like to [TS]

00:22:20   Selina Kyle stuff i actually thought [TS]

00:22:21   there was some of the the better stuff [TS]

00:22:23   because with her and Ben McKenzie and [TS]

00:22:24   and I thought that was I thought that's [TS]

00:22:26   that was stuff was ok I'm has a strange [TS]

00:22:29   idea of how to be a stealthy pickpocket [TS]

00:22:31   the wheel rolls over cars and stay and [TS]

00:22:34   somebody had deserted streets in cats [TS]

00:22:37   one too many times on PBS but but she [TS]

00:22:39   can hide in a bus that is just her in [TS]

00:22:43   the bus and no one will ever see her [TS]

00:22:45   i freakin love Lili Lili Taylor and [TS]

00:22:48   Frank Whaley that week that they were on [TS]

00:22:49   it i was going to every minute there on [TS]

00:22:51   the screen was great yeah i don't i [TS]

00:22:53   don't like the show either identity i [TS]

00:22:55   don't actually even like Donald low very [TS]

00:22:58   much we just really disappoints me [TS]

00:22:59   because I feel like I think what I [TS]

00:23:01   decided is it's so operatic it's so [TS]

00:23:04   over-the-top even even the Donal Logue [TS]

00:23:07   stuff is too far over the top and the [TS]

00:23:09   Jada Pinkett stuff is so far over the [TS]

00:23:12   top it wraps all the way back around and [TS]

00:23:14   and then goes back all the way up over [TS]

00:23:15   the top again yeah and and when you [TS]

00:23:19   contrast with something like the flash [TS]

00:23:20   and trying to do very different things [TS]

00:23:21   it's like I just don't I just don't like [TS]

00:23:23   it I i think i think you're right Phil [TS]

00:23:25   that the show that is the most [TS]

00:23:26   interesting to me is James Gordon trying [TS]

00:23:29   to wrestle with what it means to how can [TS]

00:23:32   he keep some honor and try to bring [TS]

00:23:34   justice to Gotham when it's completely [TS]

00:23:37   messed up but that's the only like [TS]

00:23:40   nugget of this that I find interesting [TS]

00:23:41   at all and the rest of it is so [TS]

00:23:44   over-the-top and and crazy that I just [TS]

00:23:47   as a tone wise i just can't accept it [TS]

00:23:50   it's just yeah yeah I i just i just [TS]

00:23:53   spent like 45 minutes on a non-electric [TS]

00:23:56   shadow podcast with my says talking [TS]

00:23:59   about how much i really don't like this [TS]

00:24:00   show so go listen to that evaluates [TS]

00:24:03   database basically maybe it's just sort [TS]

00:24:06   of you know if Gotham is a font than [TS]

00:24:10   this is Comic Sans Batman all i'll say [TS]

00:24:12   let me get money let me do over let me [TS]

00:24:15   say a few kind words in defensive of [TS]

00:24:17   Gotham though not really and I call it I [TS]

00:24:21   call this the shark phenomenon a few [TS]

00:24:23   years ago on CBS there was a show called [TS]

00:24:24   shark yes [TS]

00:24:25   oh and gentlemen do because it's hard to [TS]

00:24:30   love is a strong word that we delighted [TS]

00:24:33   and James was just so it was James Woods [TS]

00:24:36   was like a really sleazy attorney who [TS]

00:24:38   became a force for good in the DA's [TS]

00:24:41   office and it was not a very difficult [TS]

00:24:45   to follow so you could go about your [TS]

00:24:47   business and and like do your email [TS]

00:24:50   surfing the net and and and you said [TS]

00:24:52   earlier how you mail by yeah and look up [TS]

00:24:55   and shark would be doing his Sharkey [TS]

00:24:57   things and you go home shark you've [TS]

00:24:59   solved it not cancer and I don't think [TS]

00:25:02   every show needs to be homework I don't [TS]

00:25:04   want to spend every show sitting there [TS]

00:25:06   with my flowchart plotting out the [TS]

00:25:08   various threads i think that there are [TS]

00:25:11   some shows that need to be disposable [TS]

00:25:12   that you can you can look up and go [TS]

00:25:15   Oh Batman how are you up to today and [TS]

00:25:19   and got them right now is scratching [TS]

00:25:21   that itch when it's not being terrible [TS]

00:25:23   clutches about a third method on i have [TS]

00:25:26   an observation about the people of [TS]

00:25:28   Gotham which is that they all deserve to [TS]

00:25:30   die and don't deserve a Batman huh yeah [TS]

00:25:33   in three consecutive episodes they had a [TS]

00:25:35   super villain whose diabolical plan was [TS]

00:25:37   to walk up to people and say do this [TS]

00:25:40   incredibly unlikely thing [TS]

00:25:42   oops you just killed yourself here grab [TS]

00:25:45   this weather balloon oh now you're [TS]

00:25:46   floating away to death [TS]

00:25:47   yeah here hold this metal tube up to [TS]

00:25:50   your eyeball [TS]

00:25:50   yeah you had a very good point on [TS]

00:25:52   twitter about that money about the about [TS]

00:25:54   the assassin it is very tim burton e but [TS]

00:25:57   with without the humor of Tim Burton you [TS]

00:25:59   know it's it's it's sort of it's like a [TS]

00:26:01   releases to get a mousetrap i'm i'm [TS]

00:26:03   going to probably watch the show on hulu [TS]

00:26:04   the season and see how i feel about it [TS]

00:26:06   by the end of it [TS]

00:26:07   um I really like Donald Logan will watch [TS]

00:26:10   him in anything and so obviously you [TS]

00:26:12   have yes it's effective and I think [TS]

00:26:18   Benjamin McKenzie is doing a fine job [TS]

00:26:20   with his role it's a nice kitchen [TS]

00:26:22   Mackenzie well we're not our first they [TS]

00:26:25   are very for multimedia yes mr. [TS]

00:26:27   Mackenzie is doing an excellent job [TS]

00:26:29   yeah Donaldson logo doing very well it's [TS]

00:26:33   it's it's sort of did you work for [TS]

00:26:35   itself with me [TS]

00:26:36   oh yes [TS]

00:26:36   ya know he is basically taking his [TS]

00:26:39   cellphone character and kinda get a [TS]

00:26:40   greater twist and it's nice and I really [TS]

00:26:43   love what they're doing penguin I feel [TS]

00:26:46   like the show just lights up whenever [TS]

00:26:48   that guys on-screen and I can't wait to [TS]

00:26:50   see him become like the Lord of the [TS]

00:26:51   underworld or whatever so i'm i'm [TS]

00:26:53   basically rooting for him which is [TS]

00:26:54   probably not what the show wants me to [TS]

00:26:56   do but i am much more invested in what [TS]

00:27:00   the penguin is basically the flipside of [TS]

00:27:02   Batman at this point where he's coming [TS]

00:27:04   back to Gotham City and he's going to [TS]

00:27:05   make the city his which is what Batman [TS]

00:27:08   does later it's just the Penguins idea [TS]

00:27:09   of what he's going to do with the city [TS]

00:27:11   vs Batman so diametrically opposed i [TS]

00:27:13   can't wait to see how it works out [TS]

00:27:13   alright so flashes gets it gives a [TS]

00:27:16   thumbs-up Gotham man not it's a half [TS]

00:27:19   them not so yeah I would give it a [TS]

00:27:21   thumbs up to nitrate three-quarters i'm [TS]

00:27:23   not going to because i'm i'm i'm [TS]

00:27:25   sticking with it at the halfway point [TS]

00:27:27   that three-quarters understand i watch [TS]

00:27:29   this you know second episode just was [TS]

00:27:31   like I don't want to watch the show [TS]

00:27:32   yeah and I mean the thought that by the [TS]

00:27:36   end of the series if we're never gonna [TS]

00:27:37   see Batman by the end of the series [TS]

00:27:40   things are still going to be so dark [TS]

00:27:42   that the city needs a Batman so your [TS]

00:27:45   heroes Gordon is never going to win you [TS]

00:27:48   know it's like why do I want that in my [TS]

00:27:49   life one once a week for the next time I [TS]

00:27:52   don't I don't entirely agree with that [TS]

00:27:54   because i feel like the story arc of the [TS]

00:27:55   show is going to be cordon getting more [TS]

00:27:58   and more power mais you know no one hour [TS]

00:28:02   and was going to clean it up to the [TS]

00:28:04   point where he can at least side with [TS]

00:28:07   Batman that like but you know whether he [TS]

00:28:09   becomes Commissioner he's just a [TS]

00:28:11   higher-ranking cop that he's going to [TS]

00:28:12   have made things less corrupt but still [TS]

00:28:15   not enough that he does not develop a [TS]

00:28:17   stat man but I'm oohs yeah that's not [TS]

00:28:20   the point in my life once a week I agree [TS]

00:28:22   ok so we should but we should move on [TS]

00:28:24   what other new shows are out there that [TS]

00:28:26   that you guys are watching that you [TS]

00:28:27   would like to talk about perhaps [TS]

00:28:29   Constantine Constantine's and I asked [TS]

00:28:32   for me or the other the other night as [TS]

00:28:33   we record this DC times might have been [TS]

00:28:36   doing the superhero yeah we just [TS]

00:28:37   continuing the DC Comics so uh this [TS]

00:28:39   watch to see I haven't seen it well tell [TS]

00:28:41   me about it [TS]

00:28:42   Monty well the topic is about iie yeah i [TS]

00:28:49   know the top [TS]

00:28:50   but but yes you're gonna love me some [TS]

00:28:52   people might not [TS]

00:28:53   it's an Iraqi on rives yeah well it's a [TS]

00:28:56   bad guy because when i started to me [TS]

00:28:58   it's a show about konstantine chernenko [TS]

00:29:00   and to ever live up to the legacy set by [TS]

00:29:05   urien drop-off byzantine empire John [TS]

00:29:08   Constantine is the latest in a long line [TS]

00:29:10   of musicians who musicians magicians [TS]

00:29:12   they're like met there like that the [TS]

00:29:14   Laughing magician or something like that [TS]

00:29:16   because they they always manage to land [TS]

00:29:18   on their feet and get the best of a deal [TS]

00:29:19   and through a series of really bad [TS]

00:29:23   decisions he ends up mortgaging his soul [TS]

00:29:25   two three or four different demonic [TS]

00:29:27   entities and basically but the comic [TS]

00:29:31   book series is about him staying one or [TS]

00:29:32   two steps ahead whichever demon own a [TS]

00:29:34   piece of the sold any given point and by [TS]

00:29:36   the end of it is ready to die and he [TS]

00:29:38   solved supernatural mysteries along the [TS]

00:29:40   way [TS]

00:29:40   yeah yeah and the TV show appears to be [TS]

00:29:43   they have seemed to have set it up where [TS]

00:29:46   he is again a wizard but not like the [TS]

00:29:49   harry potter type of wizard more like a [TS]

00:29:50   p.i who happens to be able to cast [TS]

00:29:52   spells he consigned an innocent girl to [TS]

00:29:55   hell through his own hubris and an angel [TS]

00:29:58   is now using this as leverage against [TS]

00:30:00   him so he kind of has to fight the [TS]

00:30:02   forces of evil for heaven and in order [TS]

00:30:04   to redeem his own soul and try to get [TS]

00:30:06   this innocent child back from the damned [TS]

00:30:08   so that all supernatural mysteries along [TS]

00:30:11   the way [TS]

00:30:11   yeah i mean that's that yeah i mean this [TS]

00:30:13   is obviously going to like a demon of [TS]

00:30:14   the week or whatever it's going to kind [TS]

00:30:15   of like Reaper that way this is [TS]

00:30:17   basically like if Reaper went to grad [TS]

00:30:19   school but / supernatural yeah so the [TS]

00:30:23   good news is that the guy looks exactly [TS]

00:30:24   like the constant in the comics and he's [TS]

00:30:28   a Christmas she like that is the correct [TS]

00:30:31   that was something that sold me out like [TS]

00:30:32   the first like 30 seconds you're like [TS]

00:30:34   yeah this guy is John Constantine that [TS]

00:30:36   they did a good job with that they may [TS]

00:30:38   have done like a pentagram on the [TS]

00:30:39   Florida and just like brought him up [TS]

00:30:41   from somewhere because like I had never [TS]

00:30:43   had not been through this actress work [TS]

00:30:45   before and then he walks onto the screen [TS]

00:30:47   and body scan fortunately nothing in [TS]

00:30:49   your heart she left him [TS]

00:30:51   it's the pilot well the pilots kind of a [TS]

00:30:53   hot mess because it's an island time and [TS]

00:30:56   I think you should get the reshot yeah [TS]

00:30:58   because apparently they wanted to cut [TS]

00:30:59   out the lady in it so they got [TS]

00:31:02   don't think they got rid of the [TS]

00:31:03   character who was supposed to be his [TS]

00:31:04   female sidekick [TS]

00:31:05   um she returns to her home planet at the [TS]

00:31:08   end of the episode off-screen yes it's a [TS]

00:31:11   shame because she's not a bad I bad [TS]

00:31:12   actress I've seen her and she was in the [TS]

00:31:14   BBC robin hood show a couple years ago [TS]

00:31:16   as maid marian she's finding that but [TS]

00:31:18   they're making her do that fake American [TS]

00:31:19   accent and they put her in the sort of [TS]

00:31:22   aunjanue role of like I don't know [TS]

00:31:24   anything that's going on here and [TS]

00:31:25   literally I like it was paying attention [TS]

00:31:27   every line of dialogue do that they gave [TS]

00:31:31   her was like the what's what's this [TS]

00:31:33   about what's that about what was going [TS]

00:31:34   on who are you [TS]

00:31:35   what's that what are these things it's [TS]

00:31:38   when they start screaming the best time [TS]

00:31:39   gun straight go straight [TS]

00:31:41   it was but I got a couple levels even [TS]

00:31:46   though and see and see how this goes [TS]

00:31:49   and I thought that Chaz was well cast [TS]

00:31:52   and is an interesting character on [TS]

00:31:54   Harold Perrineau is incredibly creepy [TS]

00:31:55   guy like him so you you've got a couple [TS]

00:31:58   intriguing hooks and I think it's too up [TS]

00:32:01   a couple episodes on hulu and see how [TS]

00:32:02   you like it yeah i'll keep watching it [TS]

00:32:04   it might not be good but it'll be [TS]

00:32:05   fascinating and the thing is you don't [TS]

00:32:07   have to have actually read the comics to [TS]

00:32:09   enjoy the the series I feel like we [TS]

00:32:11   should we should reassure people on this [TS]

00:32:13   point because Constantine like John [TS]

00:32:15   Constantine's kind of the wolverine of [TS]

00:32:17   the vertical university just get popping [TS]

00:32:19   up everywhere and like working with [TS]

00:32:21   everybody and he's got this crazy-long [TS]

00:32:23   back started like swamp thing and with [TS]

00:32:25   Timothy hunter the boy wizard and with [TS]

00:32:28   the guys from the endless and so on and [TS]

00:32:29   so forth and that gets old and tedious [TS]

00:32:31   and tired so just ignore the comment [TS]

00:32:33   posted book history and see how this [TS]

00:32:35   works for you [TS]

00:32:36   yeah the show might just be supernatural [TS]

00:32:38   private investigator Mike Stevens right [TS]

00:32:40   well I i think it does a good job of [TS]

00:32:43   focusing on what's interesting about [TS]

00:32:45   this character is that he's likeable but [TS]

00:32:46   he's kind of ultimately cursed in that [TS]

00:32:49   they make a point of this in the first [TS]

00:32:50   episode like basically all of his [TS]

00:32:52   friends die or get in trouble in one way [TS]

00:32:56   or another [TS]

00:32:57   like you know he's kind of a walking bad [TS]

00:32:59   luck token for everybody else around him [TS]

00:33:01   which is kind of what makes him [TS]

00:33:03   fascinating as a characters because you [TS]

00:33:05   know he ends up being not impervious but [TS]

00:33:08   like you know he he ends up suffering [TS]

00:33:10   causing a lot of pain stuff like that [TS]

00:33:12   but that's kind of his nurses that he [TS]

00:33:14   realized that like he needs and craves [TS]

00:33:16   human companionship and then he realizes [TS]

00:33:17   he's like the worst thing that happens [TS]

00:33:19   to most people [TS]

00:33:20   yeah but it'sit's really actually watch [TS]

00:33:21   the production values in the pilot I [TS]

00:33:23   thought were really good [TS]

00:33:25   I thought they they pulled some [TS]

00:33:26   interesting strings the the right I knew [TS]

00:33:29   that they had changed the last scene [TS]

00:33:30   where they sort of write out the female [TS]

00:33:33   lead but it comes across as incredibly [TS]

00:33:35   handsome you like oh my god do terrible [TS]

00:33:39   fortunately you're gonna want a [TS]

00:33:40   journalist worth noting that ever [TS]

00:33:41   happened [TS]

00:33:43   fortunately she left us a map of all [TS]

00:33:45   these things that we can turn into like [TS]

00:33:46   25 more episodes [TS]

00:33:48   yeah well because they recast the [TS]

00:33:50   actress right there like not just recast [TS]

00:33:52   the changes Tupac similarities wholly [TS]

00:33:54   different character and they tacked on [TS]

00:33:55   this little bit in the very end that [TS]

00:33:57   sort of leads into that which is a nice [TS]

00:33:59   little segue but there's a scene at the [TS]

00:34:01   end Rishi's that somebody has been [TS]

00:34:03   drawing John Constantine at least one of [TS]

00:34:05   which is actually a picture from the [TS]

00:34:06   comics I've yeah it was a couple of my [TS]

00:34:08   book covers there which i like to think [TS]

00:34:10   they did just so they could throw some [TS]

00:34:12   money [TS]

00:34:12   the artist's way I don't think that was [TS]

00:34:14   her i thought it was like some mystery [TS]

00:34:15   woman we're gonna find out how John [TS]

00:34:17   Constantine is horribly screwed her over [TS]

00:34:19   to it's signed by her who is the new [TS]

00:34:22   characters said oh ah clever [TS]

00:34:25   well that's one way to do it so [TS]

00:34:27   Constantine worth far i give it a few [TS]

00:34:30   episodes I think I said keep your [TS]

00:34:31   netflix and I it might work better if [TS]

00:34:34   you watch two or three in a row [TS]

00:34:36   I'm i have a lot of I I have big love [TS]

00:34:38   with the character from my comic book [TS]

00:34:39   reading days and so obvious and we all [TS]

00:34:41   know i'm a sucker because i'm still [TS]

00:34:42   watching off them so i think that people [TS]

00:34:45   may want to try two or three and fell I [TS]

00:34:48   I had no idea konstantine chernenko is [TS]

00:34:50   so ill for so much of his rule of the [TS]

00:34:52   Soviet Union yeah now it's really a it's [TS]

00:34:55   really a sad series that it's mostly [TS]

00:34:56   about him good I don't feel so good the [TS]

00:34:58   big that is a Russian series it only [TS]

00:35:02   goes from one season to after the video [TS]

00:35:04   is intended realize my garbage off with [TS]

00:35:06   you ! big blob of the series of my right [TS]

00:35:09   shoulder mob anyone [TS]

00:35:11   ok go for it great job what what what [TS]

00:35:15   I've been uh what other shows should we [TS]

00:35:17   talk about you as anybody else watched [TS]

00:35:19   forever at all [TS]

00:35:20   yes I do yes yes i saw the pilot it's a [TS]

00:35:24   it's one of those shows you can watch [TS]

00:35:26   where literally you can you can leave [TS]

00:35:27   the room and come back [TS]

00:35:28   and not miss a beat yes but that's not a [TS]

00:35:33   point against it because sometimes you [TS]

00:35:35   really don't want to have to watch TV [TS]

00:35:36   where you're like oh someone somewhere [TS]

00:35:38   some some northwestern grad students [TS]

00:35:40   about the launcher PhD thesis on this um [TS]

00:35:42   it's a very CBS procedural which is [TS]

00:35:45   funny because it's on ABC ABC mind it is [TS]

00:35:48   the like it [TS]

00:35:49   the show it has the most come with [TS]

00:35:50   obviously i think is Elementary where [TS]

00:35:52   he's a super knowledgeable guy who [TS]

00:35:55   solves crimes but with a different spin [TS]

00:35:57   because he's got this strange [TS]

00:35:58   supernatural curse / blessing where ya [TS]

00:36:01   is a morally we're and resurrected in [TS]

00:36:04   the water and he's got like a weird [TS]

00:36:06   immortal stalker 2 is like I may have [TS]

00:36:08   answers but i'm not going to write i'll [TS]

00:36:09   just keep calling you like a weird out [TS]

00:36:11   so what will you sit like the CBS [TS]

00:36:13   procedural but half the time I expect [TS]

00:36:15   castle to walk in turn we have a castle [TS]

00:36:18   is in self-esteem it's a central exactly [TS]

00:36:21   out and at least he gets to use his own [TS]

00:36:23   accent and I think you watch it mostly [TS]

00:36:26   for the performance is younger and has [TS]

00:36:27   very charming yeah here he he's easy [TS]

00:36:30   they they have finally found a project [TS]

00:36:32   for this do because they're i have [TS]

00:36:34   watched him bombing a lot of things that [TS]

00:36:35   I enjoy watching him and read her hang [TS]

00:36:37   out they don't yes that's the best [TS]

00:36:40   combination like the best part of the [TS]

00:36:42   show is watching them just banter with [TS]

00:36:43   each other it's phenomenal and the [TS]

00:36:46   creepy dude who used to be on bones and [TS]

00:36:48   is now like the under corner [TS]

00:36:50   I can't Joel dates after corner that is [TS]

00:36:52   like the weird uh for movie version of [TS]

00:36:55   quincy under koruna we have come to the [TS]

00:37:00   interesting world of Forensic Sciences [TS]

00:37:02   yeah he's like this actors but on Avatar [TS]

00:37:07   he was that he was one of the squints on [TS]

00:37:09   bones and now he's on this and he's got [TS]

00:37:11   like a really nice hangdog thing going [TS]

00:37:13   and he's fun [TS]

00:37:14   it's a fun show to watch is it doesn't [TS]

00:37:16   take itself too seriously [TS]

00:37:17   yeah and they do the flashbacks well [TS]

00:37:20   we're actually kind of the only [TS]

00:37:21   criticism I would level against it is [TS]

00:37:24   this dude was like the most progressive [TS]

00:37:26   colonial to ever walk the speed of the [TS]

00:37:28   streets of New Amsterdam because like he [TS]

00:37:31   was appalled by tenement conditions and [TS]

00:37:33   like all you fools tuberculosis and [TS]

00:37:35   isn't caused by night air one day we'll [TS]

00:37:37   find the cause and and like that [TS]

00:37:39   was not a social cause that he was not [TS]

00:37:42   firmly on the right side of history on [TS]

00:37:44   the show that this reminds me of [TS]

00:37:45   actually is highlander the series not [TS]

00:37:49   just got the guy gets killed in every [TS]

00:37:50   episode just like all the flashbacks are [TS]

00:37:54   just like that a Highlander where Duncan [TS]

00:37:57   was just the greatest guy wherever he [TS]

00:37:59   was it would be great if there was a [TS]

00:38:01   show about a guy who like travel through [TS]

00:38:03   time and just had a board social views i [TS]

00:38:07   would be an entertaining show [TS]

00:38:09   quantum lout know that was american [TS]

00:38:10   horror story that was the last season of [TS]

00:38:12   american horror story with it turns out [TS]

00:38:14   that Kathy Bates is pretty much that [TS]

00:38:16   character [TS]

00:38:16   oh yeah and to torture her they tired of [TS]

00:38:19   her and make her watch like President [TS]

00:38:20   Obama on TV because they figure it's [TS]

00:38:22   like the worst thing in the world for [TS]

00:38:23   and they're right she loses her mind [TS]

00:38:25   it's really fucking it forever forever [TS]

00:38:28   forever seem to be one of those kind of [TS]

00:38:30   disposable shows i didn't just like it [TS]

00:38:31   at all but i felt no need to watch more [TS]

00:38:34   of it but I if if it were on or as Phil [TS]

00:38:37   said something you put on the background [TS]

00:38:38   and don't need to pay attention to I [TS]

00:38:40   thought it seemed perfectly fine the the [TS]

00:38:43   opposite of this show in tone is how to [TS]

00:38:45   get away with murder which takes itself [TS]

00:38:47   very seriously and I don't like any of [TS]

00:38:49   the characters I'm having a really hard [TS]

00:38:51   time trying to stick with that show um [TS]

00:38:53   and somebody I forget who had the [TS]

00:38:55   perfect tweet where they're like how to [TS]

00:38:56   commit murder is basically what happens [TS]

00:38:58   when slytherin goes to law school and I [TS]

00:39:02   i get that shonda rhimes does [TS]

00:39:03   complicated characters who are both good [TS]

00:39:05   and bad and have motives and and [TS]

00:39:07   everybody's human has flaws and feelings [TS]

00:39:09   but it's boring the flashbacks are kind [TS]

00:39:12   of deliberately obfuscating they're [TS]

00:39:14   wasting viola davis and i can't connect [TS]

00:39:18   to the key to play Dean in the last few [TS]

00:39:20   of harry potter with I can't connect to [TS]

00:39:22   him or any of the other people and I [TS]

00:39:24   have like three episodes piled up and [TS]

00:39:26   hula right now just because i keep [TS]

00:39:28   trying them and I'm like yeah I cut it [TS]

00:39:29   loose after a couple just because i [TS]

00:39:31   don't want to spend any more time with [TS]

00:39:33   any of these jerks [TS]

00:39:34   yeah another awful cool [TS]

00:39:37   so but I should also tipped my hand here [TS]

00:39:40   and and say I've never been able to [TS]

00:39:42   stick out any Shonda Rhimes show after [TS]

00:39:44   two or three episodes anyway [TS]

00:39:46   police he'll be really disappointed when [TS]

00:39:47   she finally makes the ABC Marvel synergy [TS]

00:39:50   work and this is my idea that I'm just [TS]

00:39:52   gonna spread around until finally it [TS]

00:39:54   happens which is shonda rhimes she-hulk [TS]

00:39:56   that's what i want right Marvin take the [TS]

00:39:58   Marvel intellectual property is a loss [TS]

00:40:00   show with she-hulk she's a lawyer she's [TS]

00:40:02   a superhero you put it all together [TS]

00:40:04   she's a person of color the color is [TS]

00:40:06   green but still and I I think shonda [TS]

00:40:09   rhimes would do a great job with that [TS]

00:40:10   kind of like law hero kind of things [TS]

00:40:13   that's what I want him she holds a shot [TS]

00:40:15   away an IDF and this is why you're [TS]

00:40:16   running Kapiolani let's get our agency [TS]

00:40:19   Marvel you got that one for free [TS]

00:40:20   maybe they can free maybe they can [TS]

00:40:22   repeat that that that nice lady from red [TS]

00:40:24   band society to and she can call man oh [TS]

00:40:26   you had to say it [TS]

00:40:28   so did anybody watch watch red gram you [TS]

00:40:30   know because that was that was [TS]

00:40:31   singularly the worst the worst thing i [TS]

00:40:34   saw this doesn't make me a bad person [TS]

00:40:36   that I'm rooting for the deaths of [TS]

00:40:37   multiple ya know it doesn't know because [TS]

00:40:40   they're in a bad show and they made [TS]

00:40:41   their characters they all need to just [TS]

00:40:43   die by the show dying which i think it [TS]

00:40:46   will because its ratings are turning [TS]

00:40:47   point I i have to that I had even worse [TS]

00:40:50   than ribbons some real really so wet [TS]

00:40:52   right very rarely i mean it's like it [TS]

00:40:54   right there very quickly red band [TS]

00:40:55   society is an unwatchable show about [TS]

00:40:57   people who are in a hospital and [TS]

00:40:58   apparently dying but they're the [TS]

00:41:00   hospital's almost like a dorm I don't [TS]

00:41:02   really understand it doesn't make any [TS]

00:41:03   sense [TS]

00:41:04   the characters are directly is it really [TS]

00:41:06   anorexic she's just really cute [TS]

00:41:08   yeah it's so bad it's like patch Adams [TS]

00:41:13   the series is what you're told ya you [TS]

00:41:14   know basically the angriest about oh [TS]

00:41:17   it's Octavia Spencer want to liberate [TS]

00:41:18   for better things and think of angry [TS]

00:41:19   about is is you've got this this [TS]

00:41:20   anorexic who's supposedly like a [TS]

00:41:22   long-term resident and she suppose and [TS]

00:41:24   anorexia is it is is a legitimate [TS]

00:41:27   psychological and physical disorder [TS]

00:41:29   um terrible things happen when you have [TS]

00:41:32   it you lose your hair you grow all a [TS]

00:41:34   layer of fur all over your body your [TS]

00:41:35   organs start eating themselves your [TS]

00:41:37   immune system collapses and she looks [TS]

00:41:40   great yeah sure [TS]

00:41:41   and it is the most harmful thing I can [TS]

00:41:43   possibly think of [TS]

00:41:45   because the one plot line that I saw was [TS]

00:41:46   when she goes to like a friend some [TS]

00:41:48   coming and she showered with attention [TS]

00:41:49   for how good [TS]

00:41:50   she looks and we're supposed to as [TS]

00:41:53   viewers think oh this is terrible but [TS]

00:41:54   instead the message was [TS]

00:41:55   yeah she does clean up nice as a [TS]

00:41:56   skeletal flapper so it was just it's [TS]

00:41:59   it's a poison shown that way is a really [TS]

00:42:01   it is a really bad show and uh the the [TS]

00:42:04   narrator is the guy in a coma which is [TS]

00:42:06   kind of quirky but ends up not being [TS]

00:42:08   very interesting and octavia spencer [TS]

00:42:10   totally wasted and I hate to say it [TS]

00:42:13   because i read an interview with her [TS]

00:42:14   work she basically said well i usually [TS]

00:42:15   people suggest that i play the you know [TS]

00:42:19   the the strict strict nurse type and I [TS]

00:42:22   say now that's a tight that's [TS]

00:42:23   typecasting i'm not going to do that but [TS]

00:42:24   in this case what they wrote you a [TS]

00:42:26   paycheck and so you took this job it is [TS]

00:42:28   a stereotypical performance of you know [TS]

00:42:31   this character that's like so lazy [TS]

00:42:33   that's a bad shot but I i think it's [TS]

00:42:34   going to cancel very quickly so people [TS]

00:42:36   don't need to worry about it too much [TS]

00:42:36   but red band society bad [TS]

00:42:39   what could possibly be worse than that [TS]

00:42:40   David I've got an answer let David go [TS]

00:42:43   first [TS]

00:42:43   yes yes i have instances craft I take [TS]

00:42:47   red band society what's next oh man had [TS]

00:42:48   left already canceled which already been [TS]

00:42:50   canceled [TS]

00:42:51   i won my did ya society has set us free [TS]

00:42:53   to cells that's the only one that they [TS]

00:42:55   turned off in the middle of the first [TS]

00:42:57   episode [TS]

00:42:57   oh my definition that's why do with red [TS]

00:42:59   band society about halfway through and [TS]

00:43:01   like life's too short for watching this [TS]

00:43:02   terrible Phil yeah yeah [TS]

00:43:04   and so we don't even have to talk about [TS]

00:43:06   the handle of sips 10 you dodged you [TS]

00:43:08   dodged a bullet if you didn't see it [TS]

00:43:10   because it's gone now the the other one [TS]

00:43:13   that i had and i feel bad because I [TS]

00:43:15   really wanted it to work you know I like [TS]

00:43:17   the guy is a writer and comedian but yes [TS]

00:43:20   I'm with you you have a language is like [TS]

00:43:22   it's like an anti sitcom because it's [TS]

00:43:24   doing all of the tropes it's doing all [TS]

00:43:26   the things but it's almost like it's [TS]

00:43:28   intentionally unfunny it's really weird [TS]

00:43:31   when Martin Short is the most [TS]

00:43:33   naturalistic actor in your category is [TS]

00:43:35   gone [TS]

00:43:37   yeah well the i watch the second episode [TS]

00:43:40   are i'll have another tryout man David [TS]

00:43:43   they have the whole thing ago [TS]

00:43:45   hey are you dating a doula yes I'm [TS]

00:43:48   dating the doula and it goes and its [TS]

00:43:50   trying to make the doula into a thing [TS]

00:43:52   right and the other plot that they've [TS]

00:43:55   got running along this is his air [TS]

00:43:57   conditioners stopped working his window [TS]

00:43:59   air conditioner and they have to get out [TS]

00:44:00   of the window and immediately my brain [TS]

00:44:02   goes the duel is going to help [TS]

00:44:04   and talk it through the window just yeah [TS]

00:44:06   it's a baby and 15 minutes later [TS]

00:44:08   guess what happened and and I just want [TS]

00:44:11   no this this is wrong [TS]

00:44:13   so Phil made reference to the fact that [TS]

00:44:15   I i launched recently this podcast on me [TS]

00:44:18   uncomfortable network with Tim Goodman [TS]

00:44:20   from The Hollywood Reporter to be [TS]

00:44:21   talking to you and he was being subtle [TS]

00:44:23   to he was quoted think I can you keep [TS]

00:44:25   the promise something from Iraq you fail [TS]

00:44:27   brought us yeah thank you feel it's all [TS]

00:44:29   your fault so good but Goodman quote on [TS]

00:44:32   Mulaney was there is no no idea there [TS]

00:44:34   was a TV talking shit there's no saving [TS]

00:44:37   a show this heinous and and the new york [TS]

00:44:39   times quoted them and mr. Mullaney this [TS]

00:44:41   is actually with mr. maleeni responded [TS]

00:44:43   and basically got all bent out of shape [TS]

00:44:45   because somebody said that is it shows [TS]

00:44:47   bad dude you should make a better show [TS]

00:44:50   you're sure you were not Jerry Seinfeld [TS]

00:44:53   and this show is is not good it is a [TS]

00:44:55   funny stand-up in a funny writer he [TS]

00:44:57   might not be a funny stand-up comic in [TS]

00:45:00   the middle of 87 sitcom so I i hesitate [TS]

00:45:02   to bring this up because i I've never [TS]

00:45:04   seen Elena nor the show how about to [TS]

00:45:06   compare it to so I'm speaking from a [TS]

00:45:08   position of a sort of this is very much [TS]

00:45:09   like your podcast but yeah we always [TS]

00:45:11   mention because this this this bit I [TS]

00:45:13   suppose [TS]

00:45:14   does anyone remember the the louis ck [TS]

00:45:17   show that he did on HBO lucky Louie [TS]

00:45:19   lucky Louie sorry I think it was HBO [TS]

00:45:22   yeah your call no one like that all no [TS]

00:45:25   one liked it at all right that was the [TS]

00:45:27   that was the multi-camera sitcom parody [TS]

00:45:30   ish thing yeah so maybe that's what's [TS]

00:45:33   happening here where you've gotten [TS]

00:45:35   otherwise talented guy who just just had [TS]

00:45:39   a bad day at the office when he was [TS]

00:45:41   conceiving this entire show [TS]

00:45:43   well it's weird because it's been [TS]

00:45:44   through several cycles I mean NBC [TS]

00:45:47   developed it and turned it down and [TS]

00:45:48   they've they've kept almost the same [TS]

00:45:50   cast and crew together and they did it [TS]

00:45:51   again for Fox and I don't know it's it's [TS]

00:45:55   really when trying to make fetch happen [TS]

00:45:57   yeah yeah yeah yeah it's it's it's good [TS]

00:46:00   training if he happens organically and [TS]

00:46:03   and does his millennial thing that works [TS]

00:46:05   the rest of America that's fantastic but [TS]

00:46:07   whatever he's doing now is is the exact [TS]

00:46:09   opposite of it's working so well i'm [TS]

00:46:11   gonna compare it to a much better show [TS]

00:46:13   okay in the pilot episode of The Cosby [TS]

00:46:16   Show [TS]

00:46:17   there's a spot where Bill Cosby does [TS]

00:46:20   about five minutes directly from his act [TS]

00:46:22   about giving birth [TS]

00:46:25   yeah and it fits perfectly because the [TS]

00:46:26   characters observation it's hilarious in [TS]

00:46:29   the pilot episode of Mulaney there's a [TS]

00:46:31   big section where John Mulaney does the [TS]

00:46:33   section directly from his act and the [TS]

00:46:36   entire show shuts down while you seen [TS]

00:46:39   her [TS]

00:46:39   watching to a section from his act yeah [TS]

00:46:42   it's almost the opposite i like that [TS]

00:46:44   everyone is sitting facing the audience [TS]

00:46:46   there's no it's not natural looking at [TS]

00:46:48   what I mean that's why part of me was [TS]

00:46:50   thinking this is intentionally [TS]

00:46:52   ironically bad [TS]

00:46:55   all right we're gonna move we're going [TS]

00:46:56   to move on from badness although a [TS]

00:46:58   definite Mulaney maybe badness of Monte [TS]

00:47:01   do you have something else that's too [TS]

00:47:02   that's that's also bad that you want to [TS]

00:47:04   mention well I can assure you that [TS]

00:47:06   project runway threads is not very good [TS]

00:47:08   ok thank you but this project runway for [TS]

00:47:10   kids alright they're doing that they're [TS]

00:47:14   getting the MasterChef kids thing but to [TS]

00:47:16   less effective such a thing were [TS]

00:47:18   possible yeah it's that sounds awful [TS]

00:47:23   it's a series of one episode things sort [TS]

00:47:27   of like Cupcake Wars where you have [TS]

00:47:29   three kids instead of ending a group of [TS]

00:47:31   kids over the state worries about kids [TS]

00:47:34   yeah good they're called cupcakes as [TS]

00:47:36   they're adorable [TS]

00:47:38   oh and the host is Christian Siriano [TS]

00:47:41   stripped of all is interesting [TS]

00:47:43   catchphrases and clothing he's naked [TS]

00:47:46   doing the show [TS]

00:47:48   no he's gotta like our grow-ops asses [TS]

00:47:50   home Edward events honey boo boo and [TS]

00:47:52   this is going on [TS]

00:47:54   Wow anyway i'm watching it cuz i'm [TS]

00:47:55   writing about it okay not a good show [TS]

00:47:57   well as long as it's like you're just [TS]

00:48:00   doing it for money yeah it's the wrong [TS]

00:48:02   with a body allah none of us will just [TS]

00:48:05   want to make mention a show that was so [TS]

00:48:06   dumb that I couldn't watch the second [TS]

00:48:08   episode of it and that was scorpion oh [TS]

00:48:10   god the ten-year-old is hooked on it so [TS]

00:48:14   i was in every episode and I have a [TS]

00:48:16   slight now I'm sitting there watching [TS]

00:48:18   your message hit everyone starts with [TS]

00:48:20   the little prolong that introduces all [TS]

00:48:22   the characters by name and shows you [TS]

00:48:24   their name on the screen and tells you [TS]

00:48:25   they are [TS]

00:48:26   I can't [TS]

00:48:28   after five episodes name any of these [TS]

00:48:29   people there's there's Walter because [TS]

00:48:32   everyone calls him Walter there's agent [TS]

00:48:34   Doggett [TS]

00:48:35   yes psychiatrist with a hat [TS]

00:48:39   you mean the Terminator to this would be [TS]

00:48:41   well-trained just put a hat right Eliza [TS]

00:48:44   that environment that guy and a great [TS]

00:48:46   team ash [TS]

00:48:48   yeah that's right smash smash now David [TS]

00:48:51   when you have yes he was what i did with [TS]

00:48:53   many years ago i was i was commuting [TS]

00:48:57   between LA and San Francisco and when I [TS]

00:48:59   stayed in San Francisco and stay with my [TS]

00:49:00   parents and my parents loved the TV show [TS]

00:49:04   drag and so every night was spent [TS]

00:49:07   watching various episodes of jag I have [TS]

00:49:10   no idea what the characters names are in [TS]

00:49:11   Jack because i gave them all my own [TS]

00:49:13   yes there will ya is jag yes there is [TS]

00:49:17   jag and Lady Jags and jen you called her [TS]

00:49:20   mrs. de jag and Jack's boss and jags [TS]

00:49:23   friend and those were all the characters [TS]

00:49:25   in jag [TS]

00:49:26   oh and my father-in-law would get so [TS]

00:49:28   angry about this like you would prefer [TS]

00:49:29   his teeth their names are harder man [TS]

00:49:31   yeah and everyone is jealous that always [TS]

00:49:34   obvious its scorpion and scratch jr. [TS]

00:49:37   yeah that's all happy and tonight's [TS]

00:49:39   episode and they they've it's not even a [TS]

00:49:43   related company but they had a crossover [TS]

00:49:45   with NCIS LA tonight and so Linda hunt [TS]

00:49:49   shows up on that early huh that's Dan [TS]

00:49:51   and and not only that it was one of [TS]

00:49:53   these fake jeopardy things of all your [TS]

00:49:56   we might have to break up the team and [TS]

00:49:58   we're going to put your all into psych [TS]

00:49:59   testing and you know but but it has [TS]

00:50:02   linda hunt on the show and in the hold [TS]

00:50:04   every time she's in there [TS]

00:50:05   I'm thinking wow you know NCS la is such [TS]

00:50:09   a better show and I don't like NCIS [TS]

00:50:12   yeah it's at least competent it knows [TS]

00:50:14   what it's doing yes yes it does what it [TS]

00:50:16   says on the box some more important [TS]

00:50:18   takeaway here is that it's part of the [TS]

00:50:20   jack universe yes [TS]

00:50:22   scorpion scorpion I for those who don't [TS]

00:50:25   know scorpion is about a team of super [TS]

00:50:28   smart ian's house its team of detectives [TS]

00:50:30   a great team [TS]

00:50:32   yes it would be much easier to as much [TS]

00:50:34   better fit about their either somebody [TS]

00:50:36   there's her t-there's out to go [TS]

00:50:38   is a team and services and a half of [TS]

00:50:40   super smart super-smart professionals [TS]

00:50:42   who are managed by a scorpion [TS]

00:50:45   ah the only babies like Charlie and [TS]

00:50:48   charlie's angels and it turns out you [TS]

00:50:50   just here being the king / yes mr. [TS]

00:50:52   scorpion likes it is so a this is this [TS]

00:50:55   is a show made by people who think [TS]

00:50:57   computers are magical devices controlled [TS]

00:51:00   by elves [TS]

00:51:01   speaking of that can I just mention the [TS]

00:51:03   show that is not out yet but it's going [TS]

00:51:05   to be the worst show ever and i will [TS]

00:51:06   watch everything so hot [TS]

00:51:08   yes do you have you CSI cyber [TS]

00:51:11   yes here are some details from the cast [TS]

00:51:15   list you've got Patricia Arquette as [TS]

00:51:17   avery Ryan cyber psychologist you know [TS]

00:51:20   she should wear a hat generation like [TS]

00:51:22   baby as Elijah mundo you've got shad [TS]

00:51:26   moss who you may know as little bow as [TS]

00:51:29   cyber hacker and a shape that's not his [TS]

00:51:33   actual name is codenamed no no his [TS]

00:51:35   character name is Brody Nelson his role [TS]

00:51:37   is cyber cyber hacker yeah and KW [TS]

00:51:40   Enderby court enough you've also got [TS]

00:51:41   Luke Perry oh my god have 2y is going to [TS]

00:51:45   be that it's you know is it when this [TS]

00:51:47   day be odd genuine ever CBS case [TS]

00:51:49   something went one right as soon as [TS]

00:51:52   scorpion is cancelled i think when I [TS]

00:51:54   didn't just gotta Pharisees order Raven [TS]

00:51:56   are here is and Stavros stifter that was [TS]

00:51:59   Peter metros sifter Stavros Peter make [TS]

00:52:03   Michael look at every shipping magnate [TS]

00:52:05   abs app is out of control now this is [TS]

00:52:07   going to be so great [TS]

00:52:09   just imagine the people pounding on [TS]

00:52:10   keyboard frantically i would i would [TS]

00:52:12   like I would like to anyway scorpions [TS]

00:52:14   the episode where they were they have to [TS]

00:52:16   drive fast under a plane and plug the [TS]

00:52:18   ethernet cable in order to save the [TS]

00:52:19   plane because reasons it is amazing and [TS]

00:52:23   I can't watch it because it's just it [TS]

00:52:25   f yeah it kills too many brain cells [TS]

00:52:28   speaking of NCIS is to NCIS New Orleans [TS]

00:52:31   competent show Scott Bakula gets to [TS]

00:52:35   smile so I'm happy about that better [TS]

00:52:37   project [TS]

00:52:38   yeah yeah but I maintain that it would [TS]

00:52:40   be a much more entertaining show if it [TS]

00:52:42   were scott bakula and a cartoon [TS]

00:52:44   alligator who walked on two feet and [TS]

00:52:46   spoke with like a crazy Cajun voice and [TS]

00:52:48   always hungry but they're solving crimes [TS]

00:52:51   it is an alligator only [TS]

00:52:52   scott bakula can see no not to tell you [TS]

00:52:54   later it [TS]

00:52:55   no it's a talking alligator ok so what [TS]

00:52:57   we hoped my advice would be yeah and [TS]

00:53:00   Emeril is there lieutenant [TS]

00:53:02   yeah you know let's get sky anne rice's [TS]

00:53:05   they have a supernatural problem me the [TS]

00:53:07   alligator is at R'lyeh Fontaine you know [TS]

00:53:11   but they just solve crimes they've [TS]

00:53:12   probably convertible would be awesome [TS]

00:53:14   drew brees drops in every now and again [TS]

00:53:16   to give them like tips [TS]

00:53:18   yeah i mean frankly just NCIS treme I'd [TS]

00:53:21   watch that sir david simon on the line [TS]

00:53:25   i'm sure he'd love to be part of it all [TS]

00:53:27   is franchise yes David site when I think [TS]

00:53:29   and I think CBS procedural i think david [TS]

00:53:32   simon that would be kind of brilliant [TS]

00:53:33   woman that would be what a combination [TS]

00:53:35   leslie moonves says hey David Simon I i [TS]

00:53:38   think we should be in the David Simon [TS]

00:53:39   business and David side has ok David [TS]

00:53:44   Simon visit steady paycheck with it [TS]

00:53:46   turns out heater signed away the DVD [TS]

00:53:48   rights to the wire [TS]

00:53:50   so Dave it so CSI the wire i wanted to [TS]

00:53:54   mention i want to mention a show that I [TS]

00:53:56   i really enjoyed which is Jane the [TS]

00:53:58   Virgin also on the CW I can't wait is [TS]

00:54:02   that time so you know ugly betty was a [TS]

00:54:05   was a telenovela turned into an American [TS]

00:54:07   show with it was very broad and and and [TS]

00:54:10   soapy and telenovela and what I love [TS]

00:54:12   about jane the virgin is that it is [TS]

00:54:14   unabashedly from a telenovela and [TS]

00:54:17   actually telenovelas figure in the [TS]

00:54:20   background plot of the show and yet it [TS]

00:54:23   keeps an emotional realism that you [TS]

00:54:27   probably couldn't do if you were [TS]

00:54:28   spending all the time everything [TS]

00:54:29   heightened and over-the-top and Jane at [TS]

00:54:32   the center of the kid that the character [TS]

00:54:33   is a really interesting grounded person [TS]

00:54:37   and even though her scenario and the [TS]

00:54:40   idea is that she's she's saving herself [TS]

00:54:41   for marriage and then in a series of [TS]

00:54:44   unfortunate events she is accidentally [TS]

00:54:45   inseminated so she becomes pregnant at [TS]

00:54:49   the actors office at the doctor's office [TS]

00:54:51   and the dog in terms of the doctors the [TS]

00:54:52   sister of the the father of the baby and [TS]

00:54:54   the their day there is the telenovela [TS]

00:54:57   effective everybody being connected to [TS]

00:54:59   everybody else in some way but to keep [TS]

00:55:02   that kind of pot boiling plot advancing [TS]

00:55:05   while [TS]

00:55:05   also keeping some really genuine moments [TS]

00:55:08   of character and emotion is quite a [TS]

00:55:11   magic trick and they've managed to do it [TS]

00:55:13   where like the characters likable they [TS]

00:55:15   all have motivations characters that [TS]

00:55:17   could be cardboard cutout villains [TS]

00:55:19   suddenly are you understand why they're [TS]

00:55:22   doing what they're doing and even if you [TS]

00:55:23   don't agree with it that you like you [TS]

00:55:25   you like the the father of the baby his [TS]

00:55:27   wife is so easily could have been a [TS]

00:55:30   caricature and a villain and yet you [TS]

00:55:33   actually kind of feel for her after two [TS]

00:55:35   episodes so i'm really liking and I [TS]

00:55:37   think it I think it's very good and if [TS]

00:55:39   you're not if you're not watching it [TS]

00:55:41   because you think well one it's on the [TS]

00:55:42   CW two it's not about superheroes and [TS]

00:55:44   three it's probably it basically telling [TS]

00:55:46   fellow so it's probably ridiculous it's [TS]

00:55:48   not it's it's really good it's charming [TS]

00:55:51   and that's not it is that's not a word I [TS]

00:55:53   use much for TV i used a lot for me but [TS]

00:55:56   you use is very way so it is and in and [TS]

00:55:59   you're casting goes a long way it's [TS]

00:56:02   funny as that is fantastic [TS]

00:56:04   she because she's living in this in the [TS]

00:56:07   telenovelas a part of her life living [TS]

00:56:10   with her mom and her abuela she's on the [TS]

00:56:12   bus and like the guy in the billboard [TS]

00:56:14   for the telenovela like talks to her and [TS]

00:56:17   links that are in things and he's the [TS]

00:56:19   narrator and it's it's just the way it's [TS]

00:56:22   done it could it could so easily have [TS]

00:56:24   been done wrong and instead it's like [TS]

00:56:26   every decision is the right decision and [TS]

00:56:29   you end up with this show that is able [TS]

00:56:31   to walk that line of like honoring the [TS]

00:56:33   these kind of crazy plots and broad [TS]

00:56:36   ideas of the telenovela while being [TS]

00:56:38   grounded [TS]

00:56:39   I don't know how they do it it's amazing [TS]

00:56:41   yeah yeah so i recommend it james [TS]

00:56:44   version [TS]

00:56:45   you should check it out David said David [TS]

00:56:47   said it was great it was a it was good [TS]

00:56:49   in words that I overused so there you go [TS]

00:56:50   David good job I think blackish a [TS]

00:56:53   half-decent show I was the other one I [TS]

00:56:55   was going to mention any other than i [TS]

00:56:56   wanted to i get some yes I laughed I [TS]

00:56:58   watched watched the first two or three [TS]

00:57:00   episodes that know that I think the [TS]

00:57:01   second episode I laughed so hard that I [TS]

00:57:04   cried twice in one episode and that is I [TS]

00:57:08   don't do that to comedies and and I've [TS]

00:57:11   been really impressed with blackish yeah [TS]

00:57:13   you weren't like really great i'm not [TS]

00:57:18   just look some parts [TS]

00:57:19   anytime you agree with pops as a [TS]

00:57:21   character in that show you may be [TS]

00:57:23   thinking you're confident you are on the [TS]

00:57:25   wrong side of history but it's so he's [TS]

00:57:28   so good looks like the last episode is [TS]

00:57:31   about spanking into spanked or not to [TS]

00:57:33   spank and Anthony Anderson's character [TS]

00:57:36   decides he's not going to a nice and and [TS]

00:57:38   so everyone is watching the door to the [TS]

00:57:40   room and and also the the kids start [TS]

00:57:44   crying and bawling his eyes out the door [TS]

00:57:46   opens it comes out and and Mary fish [TS]

00:57:49   birds what did you do is why i like to [TS]

00:57:52   spank might I told him you know I talked [TS]

00:57:54   with him to add said I disappointed him [TS]

00:57:57   and very good-looking kids up picket [TS]

00:58:00   fences and told I didn't tell you to [TS]

00:58:02   break his spirit is very small and all [TS]

00:58:06   my garbage i love it it's got all the I [TS]

00:58:09   feel like it's got it in the same vein [TS]

00:58:11   as modern family and that he had no [TS]

00:58:13   interest areas heard with it is a good [TS]

00:58:14   idea but yes it shows you can do a show [TS]

00:58:18   that's actually got a premise and it's [TS]

00:58:19   about something while at while never [TS]

00:58:22   really compromising on making good jokes [TS]

00:58:24   because it is about anthony anderson who [TS]

00:58:25   is also really likable fun character a [TS]

00:58:29   good just I really like the character [TS]

00:58:31   even though he's often wrong which is [TS]

00:58:33   actually one of the things I really like [TS]

00:58:34   about reminds me a little bit of bernie [TS]

00:58:35   mac and that show which also had some of [TS]

00:58:39   the same people working on very well [TS]

00:58:41   more Larry Wilmore who's going to be [TS]

00:58:42   Stephen Colbert's replacement is on is [TS]

00:58:45   on this on the show as a writer and he's [TS]

00:58:47   really funny and he basically [TS]

00:58:49   masterminded Bernie Mac so yeah that [TS]

00:58:51   they brought him in to sort of ease the [TS]

00:58:53   way because it's a first-time show [TS]

00:58:55   creator right and and he basically said [TS]

00:58:58   I don't need to do anything here this is [TS]

00:59:00   this is solid and that's why after like [TS]

00:59:03   three episodes he was off to in the the [TS]

00:59:05   minority room in order to restore yeah [TS]

00:59:07   yeah my only problem with the shows they [TS]

00:59:09   got a couple kids too many but there are [TS]

00:59:12   there I forget how many kids there are [TS]

00:59:14   many many in the end too many is always [TS]

00:59:17   the answer on any don't ya okay I'm not [TS]

00:59:20   a crackpot it but they are really good [TS]

00:59:23   there they are good and and I feel like [TS]

00:59:26   like with modern family you you're sort [TS]

00:59:28   of getting the idea of where the kids [TS]

00:59:30   slot and what their story arcs are going [TS]

00:59:31   to be and how they how they fit together [TS]

00:59:33   and over time I think it's gonna make [TS]

00:59:34   more sense like it because the modern [TS]

00:59:36   family I I appreciate that the kids are [TS]

00:59:38   all different and it just took a little [TS]

00:59:40   time for me to to keep track of them all [TS]

00:59:42   but it's it's a it's a really really [TS]

00:59:45   good funny funny show and a point where [TS]

00:59:48   modern family is as she is showing its [TS]

00:59:49   age blackish seems really really fresh [TS]

00:59:52   and there are lots of different ways to [TS]

00:59:55   just have the idea that this is a [TS]

00:59:56   ultimately it's not even about the the [TS]

00:59:59   father [TS]

00:59:59   father [TS]

01:00:00   in concerned about the racial identity [TS]

01:00:01   of his kids it's sort of like again it's [TS]

01:00:04   the father is really being concerned [TS]

01:00:06   about what what his kids are doing and [TS]

01:00:08   he his ideas are not entirely based in [TS]

01:00:10   reality and that leads to comedy which [TS]

01:00:13   is actually a lot of fun and yet his [TS]

01:00:15   hearts in the right place it's a it's a [TS]

01:00:17   really good show and if you've ever [TS]

01:00:19   liked like modern family or something [TS]

01:00:20   like that it's a it's worth your time I [TS]

01:00:22   I found it really really funny [TS]

01:00:25   so yeah what else what else we have [TS]

01:00:28   did anybody else see what anybody else [TS]

01:00:30   watch any of a doozy [TS]

01:00:32   yeah some guy I haven't been queued up [TS]

01:00:34   um it's actually pretty good i would say [TS]

01:00:36   I I don't know will last but it you [TS]

01:00:38   wanted to show what benefit is if it [TS]

01:00:41   kinda reminds me of benin Kate in the [TS]

01:00:43   sense that you have a really easy and [TS]

01:00:45   simple cast chemistry and they are [TS]

01:00:48   better than the materials are given Tom [TS]

01:00:50   and they're pushing too hard on some [TS]

01:00:52   points and they really it and the [TS]

01:00:54   sidekicks keep running with the show [TS]

01:00:56   because just like Lucy punch basically [TS]

01:00:58   walked off with a lot of episodes of [TS]

01:00:59   benin Kate the two actors whose names i [TS]

01:01:03   have not bothered to learn yet who are [TS]

01:01:04   the besties of the two cutie booty [TS]

01:01:06   lovebirds are our super funny in any [TS]

01:01:09   subplot there and they are funny I [TS]

01:01:10   although i would argue that some of the [TS]

01:01:12   later episodes they take their stick [TS]

01:01:15   gets a little less sticky as it goes [TS]

01:01:17   along and I think you have a positive [TS]

01:01:18   either growing as characters which i [TS]

01:01:21   find interesting and gratifying because [TS]

01:01:23   the episode where they decided that all [TS]

01:01:24   right fine we hate each other but [TS]

01:01:25   because our friends are together we will [TS]

01:01:27   pretend to like each other around our [TS]

01:01:28   friends like that was that that showed [TS]

01:01:30   growth and I was like hey um the two [TS]

01:01:33   elements up [TS]

01:01:35   I'm wildly and decided on i'm not sure [TS]

01:01:36   how I feel about the crazy CEO of the [TS]

01:01:38   dating company because I feel like [TS]

01:01:40   you're playing Harlem too broadly and [TS]

01:01:42   i'm not sure how I feel about the weird [TS]

01:01:44   dating IT people who pop-up and and [TS]

01:01:46   deadpan things and then pop off again [TS]

01:01:49   I'll look as for cracking heads [TS]

01:01:51   um I feel like that's kind of geek [TS]

01:01:53   blackface and I don't like it [TS]

01:01:55   yeah after after watching the pilot the [TS]

01:01:58   twelve-year-old looked at and when [TS]

01:01:59   oh it's photo i met your mother fair [TS]

01:02:03   enough but it's not bad obama come from [TS]

01:02:07   I mean why has a long story was also [TS]

01:02:09   this premise morale is something that I [TS]

01:02:11   find it and [TS]

01:02:12   totally disoriented the katey sagal is [TS]

01:02:13   narrating it too so yeah [TS]

01:02:15   katey sagal narrator I find incredibly [TS]

01:02:17   disorienting because i had watch her be [TS]

01:02:19   evil one night a week on sons of anarchy [TS]

01:02:21   so I like to imagine you the same yeah [TS]

01:02:24   getting she goes on the run from the MC [TS]

01:02:26   and starts narrating so it counts for [TS]

01:02:28   ibc i'm a fan of both the leads who i [TS]

01:02:30   think are very charismatic and have [TS]

01:02:32   really good chemistry I'm he was [TS]

01:02:34   Christian madman yeah a christian vande [TS]

01:02:37   velde manacles Milioti more intently [TS]

01:02:39   really welcome and the mother [TS]

01:02:41   yeah yeah gender they they're both very [TS]

01:02:44   they're both very good very good [TS]

01:02:45   together and I i agree i mean there's [TS]

01:02:49   some elements of them quite so yes I [TS]

01:02:50   kinda like the the vignette approach [TS]

01:02:53   that they're taking even though because [TS]

01:02:55   it's the kind of thing that you know ten [TS]

01:02:56   years ago a network never would have [TS]

01:02:59   done was like well there's kind of a [TS]

01:03:01   hard limit to how long the show can go [TS]

01:03:03   on and yes you can find ways around that [TS]

01:03:06   but in some ways it's like if this was [TS]

01:03:08   one show that lasted 26 episodes and [TS]

01:03:11   they followed their conceit all the way [TS]

01:03:12   through i like that would be that would [TS]

01:03:14   be fine [TS]

01:03:15   there's no need to string it out until [TS]

01:03:16   like 10 seasons of a show but and i and [TS]

01:03:19   i liked it i appreciate that they're [TS]

01:03:20   willing willing to take willing to go a [TS]

01:03:23   little bit bizarre and nerdy at times [TS]

01:03:26   like there's a back to the future [TS]

01:03:27   reference in the first episode [TS]

01:03:29   yeah hover more actually kind of [TS]

01:03:31   hilarious I'm and that's why i like i [TS]

01:03:33   like the Stinger with the hoverboard [TS]

01:03:35   that was quite a night in that whole [TS]

01:03:36   subplot were like he has to go find out [TS]

01:03:38   the hoverboards don't really exist from [TS]

01:03:40   where Thompson is like it's clever its a [TS]

01:03:42   little bit out of the box and it's not [TS]

01:03:44   just your same Pat like rom-com and you [TS]

01:03:47   know i think it its I feel like a hell I [TS]

01:03:50   had a leg up on a lot of your [TS]

01:03:51   traditional romantic comedy sitcoms 11 [TS]

01:03:55   things [TS]

01:03:56   speaking of stringing it out one thing [TS]

01:03:58   i'll give it over how i met your mother [TS]

01:03:59   is we know he's going to end up with the [TS]

01:04:01   right woman this time let's she dies in [TS]

01:04:05   the final ah who burns and that scab [TS]

01:04:11   just heal please try hehe i'm gonna [TS]

01:04:17   watch out for the season and i have the [TS]

01:04:20   marry me show queued up with Ken Marino [TS]

01:04:23   and casey wilson and they haven't [TS]

01:04:24   got around to that one yet i'm kind of [TS]

01:04:25   curious to see how that goes I'm [TS]

01:04:27   enjoying that [TS]

01:04:28   oh good I'm glad to get I was worried [TS]

01:04:30   that it might be a little bit too much [TS]

01:04:31   of casey wilson doing the the spastic [TS]

01:04:34   physical comedy I'm a hot mess but [TS]

01:04:36   adorable anyway thing that kind of [TS]

01:04:37   happens in the pilot but she settles [TS]

01:04:39   down and said okay I'm good house Ken [TS]

01:04:43   Marino is great [TS]

01:04:44   what do you mean okay because I'm oh [TS]

01:04:48   come on i love the state as much as the [TS]

01:04:49   next person I'm just how is he like to [TS]

01:04:51   see this easy going to your z charming [TS]

01:04:53   exactly easy bolt-on busy neither he's [TS]

01:04:56   kind of bullshit man behaving badly Ken [TS]

01:04:59   Marino or is it a better Ken Marino it's [TS]

01:05:01   a better camera no than that it's I mean [TS]

01:05:05   he's been acting with a lot of ladies [TS]

01:05:07   lately in like hotwives of orlando and [TS]

01:05:10   oh god that was set other show that [TS]

01:05:14   series we have a shot that one burning [TS]

01:05:16   love [TS]

01:05:17   see what I remember most from Reaper [TS]

01:05:20   working and Michael in black were both [TS]

01:05:21   demons and life partners he does a very [TS]

01:05:23   good job when Casey Wilson freaks out [TS]

01:05:26   Casey Wilson style of convincing you [TS]

01:05:29   that he would forgive her [TS]

01:05:32   okay right so we got those on the list [TS]

01:05:37   I anything else any other new shows that [TS]

01:05:39   it's a show i haven't watched that I'm [TS]

01:05:41   fascinated by bad judge open judge [TS]

01:05:44   haven't watched it not going to watch it [TS]

01:05:46   but this is that still oh yeah it feels [TS]

01:05:48   like place in my heart that house left [TS]

01:05:50   because I've never seen an episode of [TS]

01:05:51   house but i love the house promos and [TS]

01:05:54   now I like doing bad judge promos where [TS]

01:05:57   this week on that Judge bad judges badge [TS]

01:05:59   uh objection excessive sexiness [TS]

01:06:03   objections stayed bad judge Thursday [TS]

01:06:06   condition to sustain for more than four [TS]

01:06:08   hours apparently a group of of lawyers [TS]

01:06:11   has has demanded that bad judge beach [TS]

01:06:16   oh yeah [TS]

01:06:18   is bad judges a bad knee bad judge huh [TS]

01:06:21   did but possibly have the up the [TS]

01:06:25   promotional photo of it with with Kate [TS]

01:06:27   Walsh and she had puppet legs and yes [TS]

01:06:30   that's what the hell is the wrong with [TS]

01:06:33   kate walsh's legs my goodness so bad [TS]

01:06:37   judge i read please America keep [TS]

01:06:39   watching bad judge so i can do back [TS]

01:06:40   judge jokes without ever having watched [TS]

01:06:42   the show that's a good good good tip to [TS]

01:06:45   get the other one [TS]

01:06:46   yes another one that I'm i'm watching is [TS]

01:06:48   as a hostage stockholm syndrome thing [TS]

01:06:50   the ten-year-old is also hooked on the [TS]

01:06:53   mysteries of Laura oh no change [TS]

01:06:55   yes which appears in the homes [TS]

01:06:59   christened cop mom mom cop and she's [TS]

01:07:03   amazing in this i will finally come to [TS]

01:07:06   mama and can yeah she's a cop she's a [TS]

01:07:09   mom stop mom stop [TS]

01:07:12   I was receiving hit show all critics [TS]

01:07:14   hate that show and yet people should be [TS]

01:07:15   watching it because people like Debra [TS]

01:07:17   Messing [TS]

01:07:18   I guess I I knew that you can I do it [TS]

01:07:22   was a while you actually does i don't i [TS]

01:07:24   don't think that's true tips of the [TS]

01:07:25   biggest mystery of laura is why anyone [TS]

01:07:27   watched every episode of smashed I don't [TS]

01:07:30   recall liking no no I was very [TS]

01:07:33   perceptive smash to I i finally said you [TS]

01:07:36   know why are you watching this thing [TS]

01:07:38   oh my god i mean okay it's got mysteries [TS]

01:07:40   ok you know fine [TS]

01:07:41   well Laura but it's going to your hand [TS]

01:07:44   and you know it's like is that you like [TS]

01:07:46   well she s yes I like her and and she's [TS]

01:07:49   a horrible mom [TS]

01:07:50   oh well okay she is in the show but fine [TS]

01:07:54   that's why are you watching this again [TS]

01:07:56   we don't feel better about my own [TS]

01:07:58   heritage [TS]

01:07:59   yeah yeah it's it's weird it's it's kind [TS]

01:08:06   of amazing just how awful the character [TS]

01:08:09   is to everybody else in the show and [TS]

01:08:11   they all just go up that's Laura [TS]

01:08:14   brilliant detective and what if you can [TS]

01:08:17   figure is going to kill her first [TS]

01:08:19   yeah now see I'd watch that show I i [TS]

01:08:22   wanted to mention the this section of [TS]

01:08:25   the podcast is Doctor Who actors doing [TS]

01:08:26   fake American accent section [TS]

01:08:29   send another selfie with karen gillan [TS]

01:08:31   and which is always that loose part way [TS]

01:08:34   through the first episode [TS]

01:08:35   oh it's such a terrible terrible well my [TS]

01:08:38   my understanding a little but I said [TS]

01:08:41   well that nice doctor who girl so not [TS]

01:08:45   good in the hood in the selfie that [TS]

01:08:47   always show someday you'll find one [TS]

01:08:49   here's here's one here's the thing you [TS]

01:08:52   know if Karen Gillan John show they're [TS]

01:08:55   likable actors and so why the second is [TS]

01:08:59   dead i don't know the guy [TS]

01:09:01   my understanding is that is that the [TS]

01:09:03   pilot is worse than the regular episodes [TS]

01:09:07   of the pilot is like literally we dare [TS]

01:09:08   you to watch the show because you're [TS]

01:09:11   going to hate everybody who's loved it [TS]

01:09:12   and it seems a little misguided for [TS]

01:09:15   additional pylons yeah it's like [TS]

01:09:17   somebody said what if we stripped out [TS]

01:09:19   all of the sharp and funny and humane [TS]

01:09:22   insights that my fair lady had you know [TS]

01:09:24   and then what we're left is the story of [TS]

01:09:26   a man bullying a woman until she turns [TS]

01:09:28   into what he wants and someone else had [TS]

01:09:30   green light that sucker [TS]

01:09:31   it's it's it's big is a breathtaking [TS]

01:09:34   tour de force of misogyny in under half [TS]

01:09:36   an hour it is it is the first 1i watched [TS]

01:09:39   it through the first thing I thought was [TS]

01:09:40   wow they they really are doing their [TS]

01:09:43   part to because this woman that the [TS]

01:09:44   protagonist is issues basically [TS]

01:09:46   internalised every message she's ever [TS]

01:09:48   gotten via advertising you have to look [TS]

01:09:49   this way you have to act this way people [TS]

01:09:51   will only like you if you have if you [TS]

01:09:53   quite if you do this female performance [TS]

01:09:55   where you're sexually available and [TS]

01:09:58   attractive and not a deep thinker and [TS]

01:10:00   your feet you're not touch with your [TS]

01:10:02   feelings and superficial and so she [TS]

01:10:03   internalizes these messages she acts on [TS]

01:10:05   them and she's held up and it reviled as [TS]

01:10:08   an object of duration from everybody who [TS]

01:10:09   meets her it's it's it is literally the [TS]

01:10:12   illustration of women can't win for [TS]

01:10:14   losing [TS]

01:10:14   and then the rest of the episodes people [TS]

01:10:16   busy telling her what's wrong with [TS]

01:10:18   herself and how she deserves not to have [TS]

01:10:20   human contact or meaningful connections [TS]

01:10:22   with anybody and in order to be part of [TS]

01:10:24   the human race [TS]

01:10:25   she has to radically reconfigure [TS]

01:10:26   everything about herself it's if it's [TS]

01:10:29   infuriating [TS]

01:10:31   yeah I've like my head is I'm busy find [TS]

01:10:34   the pieces of my head that are over the [TS]

01:10:35   porch because the more I think about [TS]

01:10:36   this show that the more vile I think the [TS]

01:10:38   premise is because again [TS]

01:10:39   like in the original my fair lady part [TS]

01:10:42   of the point was that Henry Henry [TS]

01:10:44   Higgins was a just as blinded by his own [TS]

01:10:47   inability to perceive people who were [TS]

01:10:49   not came as human beings and a joke was [TS]

01:10:51   he's also these inferior people pull [TS]

01:10:53   them up from the market whereas he [TS]

01:10:54   couldn't see that that his lack of [TS]

01:10:56   humanity was much much worse and Eliza [TS]

01:10:59   had her own inherent dignity because she [TS]

01:11:01   was somebody with a rich inner life and [TS]

01:11:02   aspirations and goals and her [TS]

01:11:04   willingness to work with Henry Higgins [TS]

01:11:06   was her what was a really shrewd move [TS]

01:11:09   and a little bit of an emotional [TS]

01:11:10   evolution none of that is in this and [TS]

01:11:13   what's amazing to me is this is from the [TS]

01:11:15   creators Suburgatory which they [TS]

01:11:17   cancelled and gave her this instead and [TS]

01:11:20   that was a show about maintaining your [TS]

01:11:22   individuality and maintaining you know [TS]

01:11:23   being who you were in the midst of [TS]

01:11:26   everybody else conforming and this is [TS]

01:11:29   almost the opposite thing and different [TS]

01:11:31   things about Suburgatory it was really [TS]

01:11:33   nuanced about how it treated women's [TS]

01:11:35   expectations though because in the last [TS]

01:11:37   few in the last one of the episodes it [TS]

01:11:39   shows how Dallas was really effectively [TS]

01:11:41   hemmed in and and scented as a person [TS]

01:11:44   because she had always tried to do an [TS]

01:11:47   exterior performance of femininity and [TS]

01:11:49   it had her as a person so she had to [TS]

01:11:51   basically stripped out who she wasn't [TS]

01:11:52   start over again and they did a great [TS]

01:11:54   job of pointing that out and they did a [TS]

01:11:56   great job of pointing out that dolly I [TS]

01:11:57   could put on a performance as a hyper [TS]

01:12:00   consump as a hyper consumer and sexually [TS]

01:12:03   accessible person but she also had deep [TS]

01:12:05   reserves of competence and she knew [TS]

01:12:07   herself inside and out and she had a [TS]

01:12:09   full of interesting emotional life and [TS]

01:12:11   one of the things I liked about [TS]

01:12:11   Suburgatory is that test it comes to [TS]

01:12:14   this place with all these prejudices [TS]

01:12:15   intact and she learns over and over [TS]

01:12:17   again that there are different and [TS]

01:12:19   equally viable ways to be a [TS]

01:12:20   fully-realized person and this show is [TS]

01:12:22   basically the exact opposite about [TS]

01:12:24   counterpoint superga Tory also had a lot [TS]

01:12:27   of that show gave into a lot of bad [TS]

01:12:30   instincts [TS]

01:12:31   yes yes it and it sounds like from what [TS]

01:12:34   you're telling me about a lot of those [TS]

01:12:35   bad instincts are on display in in [TS]

01:12:38   selfie yeah I also in this category at [TS]

01:12:41   the other the other show with the other [TS]

01:12:43   answer would have accepted his grace [TS]

01:12:44   point which is a shot-for-shot remake of [TS]

01:12:46   a perfectly good show called broadchurch [TS]

01:12:48   featuring david tennant in the same part [TS]

01:12:50   except with a fake American accent there [TS]

01:12:52   and [TS]

01:12:53   reason to watch GracePoint ever there is [TS]

01:12:55   and it's because northern very northern [TS]

01:12:57   california is gorgeous and i want to [TS]

01:12:59   live there permanently and until i can i [TS]

01:13:00   will just drink in the scenery and all [TS]

01:13:02   you have to deal with his child murder [TS]

01:13:04   to look at the pretty pictures yeah well [TS]

01:13:06   I already got like it [TS]

01:13:07   the making child actors and I don't want [TS]

01:13:09   the point is they already made this [TS]

01:13:11   exact show and that show was better and [TS]

01:13:15   unless you don't understand English [TS]

01:13:17   accents you should probably just watch [TS]

01:13:19   broadchurch because it's the same show [TS]

01:13:22   they you know I can see all right let's [TS]

01:13:25   make something inspired by it and you [TS]

01:13:27   know and they say oh and the story is [TS]

01:13:28   changing its gonna be able to deliver [TS]

01:13:30   his first is that social identical yeah [TS]

01:13:32   seven it does happen so just seven [TS]

01:13:35   yeah I'm not gonna last that long new [TS]

01:13:38   god yes every tenant 7 a 7 out of 7 the [TS]

01:13:43   first last two episodes i guess was [TS]

01:13:44   slightly diverge so that the the [TS]

01:13:46   solution is different to them or but you [TS]

01:13:48   just watch broadchurch it's good [TS]

01:13:49   david tennant does his actual proper [TS]

01:13:51   Scottish accent it's got Olivia Colman [TS]

01:13:53   and it [TS]

01:13:54   oh god I read about this show it sounds [TS]

01:13:56   so awful it is totally great but it is [TS]

01:13:59   spectacularly depression depressing but [TS]

01:14:01   really great and you know although it [TS]

01:14:03   was great tattoo point so you know [TS]

01:14:05   because it's the same show also uh uh [TS]

01:14:08   who else is in that that's that's so [TS]

01:14:11   great [TS]

01:14:12   Arthur Darvill isn't david bradley [TS]

01:14:13   though is a heartbreakingly great as you [TS]

01:14:17   may know him as films from Harry Potter [TS]

01:14:19   he is fantastic and projects for sad [TS]

01:14:23   so those are my those are my doctor who [TS]

01:14:25   actors doing inexplicable American any [TS]

01:14:27   other new shows we should cover before [TS]

01:14:29   we wrap this up because I feel like [TS]

01:14:30   we're we we are rapidly running out of [TS]

01:14:33   time we have so many shows that we've [TS]

01:14:34   been talking about its amazing well you [TS]

01:14:36   know i'm looking at the list we've had [TS]

01:14:38   almost all of them [TS]

01:14:39   the only thing was probably not hit yet [TS]

01:14:41   we have not hit stalker and don't know [TS]

01:14:44   wow that that you can't I can't even [TS]

01:14:45   watch that based on the ads because the [TS]

01:14:47   address is wrong with Leslie Anderson [TS]

01:14:49   these days how do you go from dawson's [TS]

01:14:51   creek to this and also that just got a [TS]

01:14:53   full season renewal of course the dead [TS]

01:14:56   Madam Secretary know that's why you need [TS]

01:15:00   that that's not a real show that's a [TS]

01:15:02   simpsons episode what are you talking [TS]

01:15:03   about [TS]

01:15:04   that cabinet secretary ready anderson [TS]

01:15:06   and and the only other thing is [TS]

01:15:12   christella haven't seen yet [TS]

01:15:14   oh yeah I want to require to see if you [TS]

01:15:17   those hurt okay i was just one of those [TS]

01:15:18   yeah it's it people who have to watch TV [TS]

01:15:22   for a living considers its it's [TS]

01:15:24   watchable so let's try it and then the [TS]

01:15:26   only other thing i can think of that's [TS]

01:15:27   coming soon is marvel's agent carter so [TS]

01:15:31   whatever your lassie I am excited about [TS]

01:15:33   that that's going to be super spicy that [TS]

01:15:36   I'm actually surprised at how well [TS]

01:15:37   Marvel the the agents of shield has [TS]

01:15:40   managed to turn itself around because it [TS]

01:15:42   was kind of in the weeds for a while [TS]

01:15:43   last year and aside from the [TS]

01:15:45   inexplicable continuation of skyping on [TS]

01:15:47   my screen it's been really good yeah I i [TS]

01:15:49   agree been pretty straight like I mean [TS]

01:15:51   since the whole winter soldier tie and I [TS]

01:15:54   feel like yes done it's maintained a [TS]

01:15:56   pretty steady pace and if I know you [TS]

01:15:58   can't she looks like the best thing i [TS]

01:16:00   really like that show they took the [TS]

01:16:02   leash off like that was it's very clear [TS]

01:16:04   now looking back like all right you know [TS]

01:16:06   you guys can run this show but you can't [TS]

01:16:08   really do anything important for about [TS]

01:16:10   the first half of the first season so [TS]

01:16:12   it's really boring [TS]

01:16:13   okay and no interesting characters and [TS]

01:16:16   now yeah i just i just watched the was [TS]

01:16:18   the last week where we're uh Tyra from [TS]

01:16:21   Friday Night Lights is Mockingbird and [TS]

01:16:23   I'm like oh my god [TS]

01:16:24   wherewhere why was this not on last year [TS]

01:16:27   this is so great and they've expanded [TS]

01:16:29   the ensemble and there are like the [TS]

01:16:32   other characters are much more [TS]

01:16:33   interesting than the other people caring [TS]

01:16:34   dude great job with the well i mean i [TS]

01:16:37   think they've done a great job of of [TS]

01:16:38   modifying you know the characters from [TS]

01:16:40   the first season I mean I think that [TS]

01:16:42   fits it fits his ark in this season has [TS]

01:16:44   been really i thought he had seen with [TS]

01:16:45   Warren was like one of the best yeah [TS]

01:16:48   senior season it's just I mean it's [TS]

01:16:51   definitely I it's hard to it's really [TS]

01:16:53   hard to figure out what is it is the one [TS]

01:16:56   of you one of the few shows I've ever [TS]

01:16:57   watch sports like a light switch was [TS]

01:16:59   flipped on its way from being terrible [TS]

01:17:01   to being great really quick and i am [TS]

01:17:04   delighted by kyle maclachlan oh yeah oh [TS]

01:17:07   well yeah anything really but yes yes [TS]

01:17:10   was great mean I don't want you to come [TS]

01:17:13   in and be friendly but super creepy [TS]

01:17:16   oh you're doing it all right but this is [TS]

01:17:18   my lover that's what I do like bread [TS]

01:17:20   yeah following that and I kept waiting [TS]

01:17:22   for music died and it's been about 10 [TS]

01:17:24   days since i've been waiting your voice [TS]

01:17:26   your daughter at pori diamond has a [TS]

01:17:28   light have absolutely enjoying this is [TS]

01:17:30   read by medieval not see coming diamond [TS]

01:17:33   is the immortal Nazis just do ya like [TS]

01:17:35   every time he looks good like this is [TS]

01:17:37   the rule your planet [TS]

01:17:38   come on edge I will always think of him [TS]

01:17:40   as as Terry from the from the shield but [TS]

01:17:43   other than that like the ten minutes you [TS]

01:17:45   don't know just what I still think I'm [TS]

01:17:47   is detective Kellermann a scalar many's [TS]

01:17:49   the cop on the edge for always beside ya [TS]

01:17:52   always be he was so so babyface and then [TS]

01:17:57   open did bad things you did I will say [TS]

01:17:59   that agents of shield does not know what [TS]

01:18:01   an obelisk is yeah it's just hard thing [TS]

01:18:04   anything you want but it's not an [TS]

01:18:06   obelisk yeah you're right now and again [TS]

01:18:10   my only problem is i find Skye to be the [TS]

01:18:13   least interesting about yeah and I hate [TS]

01:18:15   that they're like oh well clearly she's [TS]

01:18:17   the reason everybody gets up in the [TS]

01:18:18   morning and I'm just done with it all [TS]

01:18:20   they've done is good with that character [TS]

01:18:22   is they've made her useful and not [TS]

01:18:23   useless and so she seems she seems [TS]

01:18:26   capable and functional and and although [TS]

01:18:29   I don't really like her she's using [TS]

01:18:33   she's useful now we're before issue i [TS]

01:18:35   like I didn't like her and she was [TS]

01:18:36   useless [TS]

01:18:37   looks like why are you on the screen go [TS]

01:18:38   away the process of making your useful [TS]

01:18:41   has involved throwing out everything we [TS]

01:18:42   already knew about her [TS]

01:18:43   yes well I longer a hacker which used to [TS]

01:18:46   be all she did I endorse this plan [TS]

01:18:48   because she was not interesting i start [TS]

01:18:50   by getting rid of her then i get rid of [TS]

01:18:52   Ward yeah then we got a lot of the evil [TS]

01:18:54   ward come on Eve award is great but he's [TS]

01:18:57   not evil ward anymore now he's just [TS]

01:18:59   apologetic Ward all I come on and like [TS]

01:19:02   like he's not going to get out halfway [TS]

01:19:03   through the season [TS]

01:19:05   yeah and that is that is just like it's [TS]

01:19:07   like check out just like Chekhov's ward [TS]

01:19:09   guys and he's not going to get out and [TS]

01:19:10   be evil this is the only way to redeem [TS]

01:19:12   unless they're killing off that [TS]

01:19:14   character in that actor what they're [TS]

01:19:15   going to do because that's what they do [TS]

01:19:17   on ABC once they think you're guilty and [TS]

01:19:19   actually actually it's a little-known [TS]

01:19:21   tell us anything it's been a disney [TS]

01:19:23   policy for a long time anyway before [TS]

01:19:25   they don't forget [TS]

01:19:27   karen gillan he's going to escape and [TS]

01:19:29   then he's gonna do something that proves [TS]

01:19:30   that he's actually telling the truth and [TS]

01:19:32   then everybody's gonna be like well I [TS]

01:19:33   guess we can trust work after all and [TS]

01:19:35   then everything's going to be okay again [TS]

01:19:37   that tell of my worries literally a Nazi [TS]

01:19:39   who killed a bunch of people on their [TS]

01:19:41   team last season [TS]

01:19:42   yeah I'm pretty sad that built that bill [TS]

01:19:44   paxton is not around though because he [TS]

01:19:46   was like a real shot in the arm for that [TS]

01:19:48   show last year he was every minute he [TS]

01:19:50   was on i was planning an accident his [TS]

01:19:52   accent was pretty fantastic though and I [TS]

01:19:55   loved his ending that was such a [TS]

01:19:57   perfectly clear in treating this like a [TS]

01:20:00   look at what the last last fall we did [TS]

01:20:02   this episode we talked about how boring [TS]

01:20:04   and uninteresting agents of shield was [TS]

01:20:05   and it's interesting that we get get [TS]

01:20:07   here this year of like they turned [TS]

01:20:09   around in a way that is surprising [TS]

01:20:10   because it really was not good and you [TS]

01:20:13   haven't watched agents of shield i would [TS]

01:20:14   say watch the first couple and then [TS]

01:20:16   figure out which episode happened right [TS]

01:20:18   after I would start with about nine or [TS]

01:20:21   ten am feeling so 10-11 usually one of [TS]

01:20:23   us and ask us questions yes do that [TS]

01:20:25   everyone happened after Captain America [TS]

01:20:27   is right word I i will say this which is [TS]

01:20:30   that the shows that I look forward to [TS]

01:20:32   the most every week now are the [TS]

01:20:34   comic-book ship yeah I mean between the [TS]

01:20:36   flash arrow agents of shield and you [TS]

01:20:39   know i'm interested in Constantine as [TS]

01:20:41   well I feel like the strangely strong [TS]

01:20:43   performing shows out there from the [TS]

01:20:45   comic book chandra well if you're gonna [TS]

01:20:47   be like that walking dead also counsels [TS]

01:20:48   a comic book show ideal driving that and [TS]

01:20:51   and Brooklyn nine-nine and Andy Samberg [TS]

01:20:53   is basically a cartoon so I i was i [TS]

01:20:55   watched very soon links know i love [TS]

01:20:58   Terry Crews and Terry Crews the [TS]

01:21:00   halloween 2episode oh my god that wasn't [TS]

01:21:03   so that was the really thing about that [TS]

01:21:05   was watching that and realize the guy [TS]

01:21:06   that they bring into play a pickpocket [TS]

01:21:08   is hollow Robbins who is an odious [TS]

01:21:11   likewise all speak like a month ago and [TS]

01:21:13   is awesome and they totally [TS]

01:21:14   underutilized in some ways but like he's [TS]

01:21:16   really that good it was just right yeah [TS]

01:21:18   that's a great show yeah alright [TS]

01:21:20   anything before we go anything else one [TS]

01:21:22   of people went through out there really [TS]

01:21:23   fast [TS]

01:21:25   that would be your chance to pop the [TS]

01:21:26   burgers okay well yes i agree i endorse [TS]

01:21:29   Bob's Burgers that's a very like i said [TS]

01:21:31   if you're watching it is instead you get [TS]

01:21:33   confused yeah we'll answer your [TS]

01:21:34   questions well answer all of your comic [TS]

01:21:36   book related questions actually between [TS]

01:21:38   the opposite field those yet good Phil [TS]

01:21:41   yeah maybe we know how I feel awesome if [TS]

01:21:42   your questions about scorpion or CSI [TS]

01:21:55   exactly it's a gift to all of us alright [TS]

01:21:57   I'm gonna wrap up the fall TV reviews [TS]

01:22:02   episode for now and forever until next [TS]

01:22:04   year we're going to do it again and see [TS]

01:22:06   which ones we have these shows make it [TS]

01:22:09   remember when we didn't like Gotham yeah [TS]

01:22:12   yeah was not only does show that feels [TS]

01:22:16   like that was so long yeah i know that [TS]

01:22:17   way and when this once Batman V Superman [TS]

01:22:19   came out that just took off totally took [TS]

01:22:22   a whole new level actually making a [TS]

01:22:24   flash movie and if the flash days on the [TS]

01:22:26   air thinking more like a different flash [TS]

01:22:28   what are they gonna do and it's like you [TS]

01:22:29   know they're just gonna do they'll do a [TS]

01:22:31   crossover episode to promote the movie [TS]

01:22:32   were flash from Earth one is right too [TS]

01:22:35   and they're like a you're the flash to [TS]

01:22:37   Wow somewhere about the flash high fives [TS]

01:22:40   crisis on infinite crossover over an [TS]

01:22:43   electric shadows suggested what if what [TS]

01:22:45   if the Flash movie is kinda like their [TS]

01:22:47   captain america what if it's an earlier [TS]

01:22:49   flash and you have that crossover ma'am [TS]

01:22:51   it's not going to be that they're just [TS]

01:22:52   gonna do that it's not gonna be that [TS]

01:22:53   clever the complete be completely in [TS]

01:22:56   parallel but they won't be able to [TS]

01:22:57   resist promoting one on the other and so [TS]

01:22:59   they'll do the earth parallel earth [TS]

01:23:00   flash crisis crisis on infinite media [TS]

01:23:03   yeah well that's actually how they could [TS]

01:23:04   reboot the Green Lantern those they [TS]

01:23:05   could they could ditch help Jordan just [TS]

01:23:07   go with somebody on Stewart Jon Stewart [TS]

01:23:09   played by Jon Stewart now that would be [TS]

01:23:11   what they as i'm sure you know Jason the [TS]

01:23:14   flash is how they invented the earth one [TS]

01:23:16   and earth to concepts in the first place [TS]

01:23:18   indeed I do monte so thank you for that [TS]
