00:00:11   welcome everybody to the incomparable [TS]

00:00:14   podcast we welcome past listeners we [TS]

00:00:17   welcome new listeners just discovering [TS]

00:00:19   us with this very episode this is a [TS]

00:00:21   podcast we talked about many things [TS]

00:00:22   including old movies that we watch and [TS]

00:00:24   then talk about and in this case we're [TS]

00:00:26   watching a classic sci-fi horror thing [TS]

00:00:31   something stirring the governor of [TS]

00:00:33   california i am referring to 1984 is the [TS]

00:00:38   Terminator directed by james cameron and [TS]

00:00:40   starring arnold schwarzenegger in a role [TS]

00:00:42   that he says like less than a hundred [TS]

00:00:44   words [TS]

00:00:45   joining me to talk about the first of [TS]

00:00:47   the Terminator movies it's an all-star [TS]

00:00:49   panel of of or even know where I'm going [TS]

00:00:54   up people who watch this movie [TS]

00:00:55   david lawrence here hello David hello [TS]

00:00:58   when you said the governor of california [TS]

00:01:00   i did have a split-second worried that [TS]

00:01:02   Jerry Brown and I really want to see [TS]

00:01:04   that i was going to say it's great Davis [TS]

00:01:06   as the Terminator who want to see that [TS]

00:01:08   uncertainty that's it bores you to death [TS]

00:01:10   that's how that one works [TS]

00:01:12   Eric and sign is also here and saw this [TS]

00:01:14   movie yes I I guess I've seen it a few [TS]

00:01:17   times of one of those times was recently [TS]

00:01:19   good excellent that's what we're looking [TS]

00:01:21   for [TS]

00:01:21   that's pretty much it and Steve Lutz who [TS]

00:01:24   i believe watched it twice recently [TS]

00:01:27   first I'm gonna rip the buttons off your [TS]

00:01:29   blouse yeah I'm one of you [TS]

00:01:33   ah it was either that or don't make me [TS]

00:01:36   bust you up man [TS]

00:01:38   yeah yeah I like that guy that character [TS]

00:01:40   Matt you're bunking with whatever it [TS]

00:01:42   covers me if you want to live [TS]

00:01:44   yes i did watch this movie twice [TS]

00:01:46   recently all right over the past week [TS]

00:01:48   actually two-and-a-half times because [TS]

00:01:50   the netflix DVD skipped midway through [TS]

00:01:53   during key scene and so I had to go out [TS]

00:01:55   and buy the blu-ray [TS]

00:01:56   oh I'm happy I did because this movie is [TS]

00:02:00   is a longtime favorite of mine although [TS]

00:02:03   having not watched it in probably a [TS]

00:02:05   couple of decades and watched again [TS]

00:02:07   twice this week it its it's not quite as [TS]

00:02:11   much of a favorite message [TS]

00:02:13   be well you know I'm glad I'm not the [TS]

00:02:14   only one that felt that way it has it [TS]

00:02:17   has a lot of issues i actually I [TS]

00:02:21   watching it back I like it but it's not [TS]

00:02:25   it has a lot of issues yeah well I [TS]

00:02:27   suppose we'll get to get to all of this [TS]

00:02:29   it's it started a it started the [TS]

00:02:33   franchise it's hard to watch it without [TS]

00:02:35   I saw the second one first [TS]

00:02:37   I never said I i was only after [TS]

00:02:39   terminator two became a huge hit in the [TS]

00:02:41   nineties that I went back and watch the [TS]

00:02:42   original terminator [TS]

00:02:44   I think has a kind of a charm a [TS]

00:02:46   low-budget kind of an eighties very this [TS]

00:02:50   is the most eighties movie I've seen in [TS]

00:02:51   a long time but it's pretty eighties [TS]

00:02:53   yeah like blend Hamilton's hair is in [TS]

00:02:57   her clothes this area the play at be the [TS]

00:03:00   street she walks down to me being lug [TS]

00:03:03   and the techno war club in particular [TS]

00:03:06   yeah our first introduction to sarah [TS]

00:03:08   connor is is her writing her honda [TS]

00:03:11   scooter [TS]

00:03:11   oh yes very enormous hair feathered [TS]

00:03:14   within an inch of its life she's got on [TS]

00:03:16   a pink backpack some sort of teal [TS]

00:03:18   scoopneck members-only like jacket [TS]

00:03:21   acid-washed guess Gino yes yes she is [TS]

00:03:25   the nineteen eighties in this scene and [TS]

00:03:27   it's all brought home you in that one [TS]

00:03:29   moment its wondrous and I mean the music [TS]

00:03:31   is so eighties I its 18th I felt like I [TS]

00:03:34   was watching a live-action video game [TS]

00:03:36   and because it's so low-budget none of [TS]

00:03:38   it is is licensed music so it's all like [TS]

00:03:40   anonymous move music by some friend of [TS]

00:03:42   James Cameron yeah it's all the same guy [TS]

00:03:45   i believe it i didn't mind investing so [TS]

00:03:48   here's my opinion about the music is I [TS]

00:03:50   didn't mind the yamaha piano synthesizer [TS]

00:03:53   mood music where it was like this is [TS]

00:03:56   what sort of sounds like a piano I did [TS]

00:04:00   mind and there's actually it's very [TS]

00:04:01   jarring when they have they're not to [TS]

00:04:03   just jump to the end the movie business [TS]

00:04:04   for talk about the music that you know [TS]

00:04:06   they Sarah and Kyle have their moment [TS]

00:04:09   and it's sort of in this in this calm [TS]

00:04:11   and peaceful piano music and then the [TS]

00:04:15   Terminator appears and we immediately [TS]

00:04:16   get it [TS]

00:04:18   just this this just simply ball that [TS]

00:04:24   happens it's is very casio the phrase i [TS]

00:04:29   wrote down in my notes is action info [TS]

00:04:32   pulse [TS]

00:04:33   is shitty that I wrote [TS]

00:04:38   wow you know I i do have notes on that [TS]

00:04:48   scene between between the two of them [TS]

00:04:51   because that's that is my favorite scene [TS]

00:04:52   in the whole movie because i'm being [TS]

00:04:53   sloppy know girls that we can still play [TS]

00:04:58   well for you [TS]

00:04:59   these many years later it really does [TS]

00:05:01   iced I got tears this time just like I [TS]

00:05:03   do every single time and I I really did [TS]

00:05:06   like the music in that part I think [TS]

00:05:07   because it was so different from the [TS]

00:05:09   reference to the movie I was yeah it was [TS]

00:05:12   it wasn't this big spiky these days when [TS]

00:05:14   you get a scene like that movies quite [TS]

00:05:16   often you get this big swelling bit of [TS]

00:05:18   music that telling you what you're [TS]

00:05:20   supposed to feel doctor who I'm looking [TS]

00:05:22   at you are you get hella luya yeah in [TS]

00:05:24   this case it was super minimal and like [TS]

00:05:27   it just it leaves the viewer to feel [TS]

00:05:28   however they want to feel about that [TS]

00:05:29   scene without the note that I hate being [TS]

00:05:32   directed by music sometimes and and i [TS]

00:05:35   like that but then I think I blocked out [TS]

00:05:37   the fact that this has popped into it [TS]

00:05:39   can't so soon afterwards even something [TS]

00:05:42   like Miami Vice i remember from this era [TS]

00:05:44   they had their the you know Michael man [TS]

00:05:47   like to do the occasional moody moody [TS]

00:05:49   part so that would be the movie part it [TS]

00:05:51   would be that quiet kind of tingly synth [TS]

00:05:53   piano and that was like I think they did [TS]

00:05:56   that that is aged better because it was [TS]

00:05:59   it was meant to be low-key although i [TS]

00:06:02   think the bumble bumble the drum thing [TS]

00:06:05   pom-poms grandma still works pretty well [TS]

00:06:07   yeah that's the part that they kept [TS]

00:06:09   using right [TS]

00:06:11   yes we have jumped ahead i did want to [TS]

00:06:13   say after saying that this is no longer [TS]

00:06:14   a huge favorite of mine that I i still [TS]

00:06:18   like it a lot and largely because i can [TS]

00:06:21   remember how great it seemed in 1984 [TS]

00:06:24   when it came out and and how different [TS]

00:06:27   it was then a lot of the other yeah i'm [TS]

00:06:30   not sure what to do as you mentioned [TS]

00:06:32   earlier it's it's a little hard to [TS]

00:06:33   categorize this into a genre and then [TS]

00:06:35   there's a lot of there's a lot of horror [TS]

00:06:36   elements like a horror movie minutes [TS]

00:06:39   with a cyber but there's there's not [TS]

00:06:41   enough of like the kind of the tents [TS]

00:06:43   quiet the somebody's going to jump out [TS]

00:06:46   of your moments [TS]

00:06:47   to really be a horror movie so there's a [TS]

00:06:48   lot of action more technically I guess i [TS]

00:06:51   would say it's a monster movie [TS]

00:06:53   ok sure like I could see that but then [TS]

00:06:55   it's wrapped in sort of that that that [TS]

00:06:57   time time-travel creek it's like she's [TS]

00:07:01   like 40 around this it's burrito film [TS]

00:07:04   didn't make me hungry [TS]

00:07:06   yeah i think i need to eat something the [TS]

00:07:08   huh [TS]

00:07:09   it is i'm glad you mentioned the the her [TS]

00:07:14   riding up in her scooter at the [TS]

00:07:16   beginning when we first see sarah and [TS]

00:07:17   this isn't where the movie starts but [TS]

00:07:18   since you mentioned i'm going to win it [TS]

00:07:20   back just to mention that i watch this [TS]

00:07:22   with my wife and i and i was commenting [TS]

00:07:24   on the scooter which is like that so [TS]

00:07:27   eighties the boxee kind of scooter shape [TS]

00:07:29   it's a honda elite 120 and she's got her [TS]

00:07:32   hair and all that and then and then she [TS]

00:07:34   gets off and my hand and lauren just [TS]

00:07:36   says it's it's not the scooter it's the [TS]

00:07:39   acid washed guess jeans really put it [TS]

00:07:42   over the top it is but but one of the [TS]

00:07:44   things I love about that is even when [TS]

00:07:47   even now it helps you read is like this [TS]

00:07:50   is not somebody whose fate it determines [TS]

00:07:54   the fate of the human race right that's [TS]

00:07:56   the whole point is she's friendly [TS]

00:07:57   unassuming person she's the kind of gal [TS]

00:08:00   that gets ice cream scoop into her [TS]

00:08:01   pocket and Syngenta and you got the [TS]

00:08:06   blu-ray I rented the HD version from [TS]

00:08:08   itunes and that's the other thing I [TS]

00:08:09   remember is when I did watch this movie [TS]

00:08:11   for the first time which was after [TS]

00:08:12   Terminator came out it was a really [TS]

00:08:14   terrible SD you know TV probably TV [TS]

00:08:19   network transfer and it was awful and it [TS]

00:08:22   looks a lot better clean up they cleaned [TS]

00:08:24   it up pretty well and it's still it is [TS]

00:08:26   what it is but it was nice to see an hd2 [TS]

00:08:28   I did originally see this movie by long [TS]

00:08:31   before Terminator 2 I think mainly [TS]

00:08:34   because I heard it had horror elements [TS]

00:08:35   and I was always kind of into or as a [TS]

00:08:37   kid but it in my recollection this movie [TS]

00:08:41   seems like it just came and went from [TS]

00:08:42   the theater is almost instantly and and [TS]

00:08:45   we're really got huge was on video just [TS]

00:08:47   through word-of-mouth of people who had [TS]

00:08:48   seen it I've sense read that that it [TS]

00:08:51   actually is considered kind of a modest [TS]

00:08:53   hit of of the time period that was [TS]

00:08:55   released in which i think was like late [TS]

00:08:57   October [TS]

00:08:58   which is not a particularly high season [TS]

00:09:00   for 44 movies so do not hit that point [TS]

00:09:04   doesn't mean a whole lot but it really [TS]

00:09:06   doesn't surprise me that it wasn't like [TS]

00:09:08   a gigantic blockbuster because if if you [TS]

00:09:11   look at the marketing from the trailer [TS]

00:09:12   to the the poster which is just like [TS]

00:09:14   Arnold face it looks absolutely awful [TS]

00:09:17   tasting all the all the PR I mean the [TS]

00:09:21   trailer is so bad it looks like an ultra [TS]

00:09:23   low budget just piece of crap and none [TS]

00:09:26   of the one of the interesting effects or [TS]

00:09:28   you know I guess it would kind of be a [TS]

00:09:31   bit of a spoiler to show Arnold in all [TS]

00:09:33   torn up with the robot parts coming [TS]

00:09:35   through and so I guess it's good from [TS]

00:09:36   that perspective but it certainly [TS]

00:09:38   doesn't make you want to run out and [TS]

00:09:39   watch the movie so this movie starts by [TS]

00:09:42   the way with the year 2029 los angeles [TS]

00:09:46   in the most eighties computer font ever [TS]

00:09:48   you know I always forget that it starts [TS]

00:09:51   in the future I mean as many times as i [TS]

00:09:53   watch this i always forget about how [TS]

00:09:55   much happens in the future with the [TS]

00:09:57   crazy models and a little skulls [TS]

00:09:59   disintegrating and stuff makes me happy [TS]

00:10:02   every time holla motion which is [TS]

00:10:03   surprisingly well done I've got their [TS]

00:10:05   parts of this that don't hold up well [TS]

00:10:07   but i think a lot of that particularly [TS]

00:10:08   the big treaded gigantic robot that that [TS]

00:10:13   drives around crushing massive piles of [TS]

00:10:15   skulls and shooting at people lot of [TS]

00:10:17   skulls and that's a that's a very [TS]

00:10:19   well-done piece of work right there it [TS]

00:10:21   looks fairly authentic even today [TS]

00:10:23   yeah they've got the and and then it [TS]

00:10:25   comes back not only is there the [TS]

00:10:26   beginning but then there's this sort of [TS]

00:10:28   future flashforward that happens later [TS]

00:10:30   in the movie so we spend more time than [TS]

00:10:31   I ever remember in this movie seeing [TS]

00:10:34   this this future wasteland with the [TS]

00:10:37   rusty like rusty cars from the eighties [TS]

00:10:40   that that are driving around but it's [TS]

00:10:44   pretty cool and and then one of the [TS]

00:10:46   things I really like is that this is [TS]

00:10:48   obviously the theme that camera is [TS]

00:10:50   trying to have in this movie is about [TS]

00:10:52   the machines because we see these giant [TS]

00:10:54   machines in the future and then the next [TS]

00:10:56   thing we see is like that big trash [TS]

00:11:00   truck dump truck tow truck whatever it [TS]

00:11:02   is another huge machine in the present [TS]

00:11:04   and this throughout this movie we keep [TS]

00:11:06   seeing robots and machines and stuff [TS]

00:11:09   like that to say you know basically [TS]

00:11:11   they're here [TS]

00:11:12   they are they're all around us kind of [TS]

00:11:13   thing but i like it i it wasn't it [TS]

00:11:16   didn't seem totally hammered home it was [TS]

00:11:17   it was more it was I thought really [TS]

00:11:20   nicely done when we get to the president [TS]

00:11:21   there's that big truck [TS]

00:11:23   well that's cool too because for a [TS]

00:11:24   second you're not aware that you're in [TS]

00:11:25   the present so right you're looking at [TS]

00:11:27   the lift arms on this trash truck and [TS]

00:11:29   you're thinking oh well we're still in [TS]

00:11:31   the post-apocalyptic future and then [TS]

00:11:33   tell the driver says what the hell and [TS]

00:11:35   opens the film with that line in just a [TS]

00:11:38   few seconds later you get the little toy [TS]

00:11:39   truck being completely crushed under the [TS]

00:11:41   tread of a bigger of the mega-resort [TS]

00:11:44   something that's not a skull but it you [TS]

00:11:46   know I get it I get it [TS]

00:11:48   yeah yeah I like that that was what [TS]

00:11:50   that's how mean the Terminator is that [TS]

00:11:52   he drives over somebody's toy truck [TS]

00:11:54   Oh bad guy so so the Terminator appears [TS]

00:11:57   in a flash of lightning and stuff and [TS]

00:12:02   he's totally naked [TS]

00:12:03   yes we see an awful lot of Arnold model [TS]

00:12:06   are yes indeed I he's got uh he visits [TS]

00:12:11   with a a quartet of Punk's a trio trio [TS]

00:12:15   Punk's you're right 30 Punk's one of [TS]

00:12:18   them is Bill Paxton yes I had never [TS]

00:12:21   noticed that before I have another thing [TS]

00:12:23   i always forget I knew that but i always [TS]

00:12:24   forget that he's in this and the end and [TS]

00:12:27   one of whom is the guy who played the [TS]

00:12:29   alien bounty hunter in the x-files [TS]

00:12:31   yes I told that was this was the first [TS]

00:12:33   time i picked that out and he was also [TS]

00:12:35   one of the master's apprentices and [TS]

00:12:37   buffy the vampire slayer that first [TS]

00:12:38   season of that he's been Brian [TS]

00:12:40   something-or-other he's been in a [TS]

00:12:41   million things but I was like is that [TS]

00:12:42   guy so he was so the Terminator give me [TS]

00:12:47   a close there's some words David those [TS]

00:12:51   give them to me now [TS]

00:12:52   No nice night for a walk but the in one [TS]

00:12:57   respect it's nice that this film doesn't [TS]

00:12:59   have very many Arnold lines because we [TS]

00:13:01   can recite them all of course this box [TS]

00:13:03   and stripping there's no reason to hold [TS]

00:13:06   back and then Michael Biehn shows up as [TS]

00:13:09   well yeah [TS]

00:13:11   sorry and he gets his eighties clothes [TS]

00:13:13   and this is this is the parallel so [TS]

00:13:14   we've got try it's hard to put yourself [TS]

00:13:16   in the mind of the filmgoers the AV mode [TS]

00:13:19   Steve you you SAT through this movie [TS]

00:13:20   upfront we're not it's not really clear [TS]

00:13:23   whoo-hoo shorts- really is that he's a [TS]

00:13:28   robot in fact it seems like the movie is [TS]

00:13:30   trying to play with like this question [TS]

00:13:32   of is is Michael being good or bad even [TS]

00:13:36   at this point although i think it's [TS]

00:13:37   pretty clear that he's gonna be good i [TS]

00:13:40   think just by virtue of the fact that [TS]

00:13:41   you've got one guy that's clearly evil [TS]

00:13:43   you know he picks up and killing people [TS]

00:13:45   although that's not necessarily a bad [TS]

00:13:47   thing it could be in hiring so you [TS]

00:13:49   assume that the guy that comes after is [TS]

00:13:51   the cop right [TS]

00:13:52   yeah yeah the one thing that bothers me [TS]

00:13:54   a little bit is is Reese's running from [TS]

00:13:57   the cops he he does a little bargain [TS]

00:13:59   clothes shopping which is which is sort [TS]

00:14:02   of amusing he's so little concerned [TS]

00:14:05   about the police that are chasing him [TS]

00:14:06   that he takes the time to measure the [TS]

00:14:07   shoes up to his feet make sure they're [TS]

00:14:09   gonna fit well you know these are these [TS]

00:14:11   are softies these are these are folks [TS]

00:14:13   that are alive before the big war so you [TS]

00:14:15   think you can probably take well he's [TS]

00:14:16   covered with scars which we've already [TS]

00:14:17   seen I mean that first shot of him [TS]

00:14:19   getting up from good the ground he's [TS]

00:14:20   he's got all sorts of very old very [TS]

00:14:22   nasty-looking scars on his back so we [TS]

00:14:24   already know he's pretty tough but that [TS]

00:14:26   just kind of drives the point home you [TS]

00:14:28   see he's picking out a nice shirt and [TS]

00:14:30   and some and some cool kik said some [TS]

00:14:32   nikes which may be an early instance of [TS]

00:14:35   some product placement although this is [TS]

00:14:37   so low budget i doubt that actually [TS]

00:14:39   happened but but the thing that bothers [TS]

00:14:41   me is he still is wearing the pants that [TS]

00:14:43   he pulled off the bomb in the alley [TS]

00:14:45   yes and he never changes it several [TS]

00:14:49   times during the movie I just looked at [TS]

00:14:50   him and five [TS]

00:14:51   you know those pants probably smell like [TS]

00:14:53   pee that's what I'm thinking and the [TS]

00:14:55   whole love scene that's all performed [TS]

00:14:57   with the pee soaked pants oh why did [TS]

00:15:00   y'all go and ruin it for music happen [TS]

00:15:03   these are the times [TS]

00:15:04   no no that's not how strong their love [TS]

00:15:06   is they were truly meant to be because [TS]

00:15:08   she can get past right now [TS]

00:15:10   alright well I mean he has thats that [TS]

00:15:12   sweet line that he lays on her i came [TS]

00:15:14   across time for you yes that for you [TS]

00:15:18   know that's a quality line because it it [TS]

00:15:19   it had to be to overcome the fact that [TS]

00:15:21   he's still wearing the bum [TS]

00:15:22   but yeah you know he's gotta be rancid [TS]

00:15:27   that whole thing i'm just wondering you [TS]

00:15:28   know why don't you pick out some new [TS]

00:15:29   pants and I'm thinking that you maybe [TS]

00:15:31   school that maybe like sit well in the [TS]

00:15:33   future in the Machine Holocaust those [TS]

00:15:37   bums pants are considered clean that's [TS]

00:15:39   can't pinpoint that's true you know [TS]

00:15:42   mhm you know it's tough in the future he [TS]

00:15:46   it's a it's a smell of home in fact I [TS]

00:15:48   bet that I betcha [TS]

00:15:50   the other thing here is we're introduced [TS]

00:15:52   to Reese that's a little strange that he [TS]

00:15:56   also has some pretty serious hair [TS]

00:15:58   feathering going on every style comes [TS]

00:16:01   back around eventually we have all the [TS]

00:16:03   things to survive the apocalypse I would [TS]

00:16:05   never have expected the bryan adams [TS]

00:16:06   haircut to make it but he's got it and [TS]

00:16:11   it's it's pretty well groomed for a [TS]

00:16:13   future dude he wears it well that and [TS]

00:16:16   that's an effect of the of the time [TS]

00:16:18   travel [TS]

00:16:18   thanks to the fact that you're here [TS]

00:16:21   tricity in there you didn't like strips [TS]

00:16:24   off your clothes feathers your hair [TS]

00:16:26   kinda mooses you a little bit yeah if [TS]

00:16:28   you go to the eighties it maybe some [TS]

00:16:30   other decade the hairstyle is different [TS]

00:16:31   but in the eighties and that's what [TS]

00:16:32   happens [TS]

00:16:33   so when we perfect time travel basically [TS]

00:16:35   you get up in the morning time travel [TS]

00:16:36   forward one minute and then you're done [TS]

00:16:38   for you know your preparations for the [TS]

00:16:39   day I gotta do is put on some deodorant [TS]

00:16:42   wow I want that yeah forget this going [TS]

00:16:44   back in time and kill Hitler business i [TS]

00:16:46   just want the haircut it's just don't [TS]

00:16:48   want to do my hair and so there's [TS]

00:16:54   another lady nice lady named Sarah [TS]

00:16:55   Connor who is has the unfortunate is [TS]

00:16:58   this movie but by the way brought to you [TS]

00:16:59   by the phone book [TS]

00:17:00   pour one out for the cellphone payphones [TS]

00:17:03   in the phone book [TS]

00:17:04   let your fingers do the walking isn't a [TS]

00:17:07   little strange that the last remaining [TS]

00:17:09   humans were still able to give Rhys the [TS]

00:17:11   special training needed to look in the [TS]

00:17:13   phone book and use it was probably an [TS]

00:17:16   elder a tribal elder in 2020 that said I [TS]

00:17:19   gotta go to pages there was four books [TS]

00:17:22   well they probably have a bunch of bunk [TS]

00:17:23   phone book somewhere and they're just [TS]

00:17:24   using them as like toilet papers [TS]

00:17:27   warehouse i assume the nuclear holocaust [TS]

00:17:29   they all burnt up right now but he knows [TS]

00:17:31   and and Arnold nose and I can sort of i [TS]

00:17:33   can sort of understand why the [TS]

00:17:35   Terminator would know because that [TS]

00:17:36   probably is in the database somewhere in [TS]

00:17:38   the program whether they're gonna say [TS]

00:17:39   look you there's no searchable anything [TS]

00:17:41   on the internet right now so it you know [TS]

00:17:43   so what you're going to have to do on [TS]

00:17:45   the skynet so what you're gonna have to [TS]

00:17:47   do is there these printed directories [TS]

00:17:49   and you look at them and so so there are [TS]

00:17:51   three Sarah Connors in la fortunately [TS]

00:17:52   our sarah connor is the third one and so [TS]

00:17:55   we visit we visit the the nice lady [TS]

00:17:58   sarah connor who is horribly murdered by [TS]

00:18:00   the the Terminator which is our first [TS]

00:18:03   firsthand Arnold Schwarzenegger or I [TS]

00:18:05   guess that's not even the first in a bad [TS]

00:18:07   guy and he's coming for Sarah Connor [TS]

00:18:08   very bad guy [TS]

00:18:10   help meanwhile Michael beam has seen a [TS]

00:18:12   large machine at a construction site and [TS]

00:18:14   I think if those pants didn't already [TS]

00:18:16   smell like pee [TS]

00:18:19   yeah and then he has a little flash [TS]

00:18:21   forward of big machines that killed [TS]

00:18:22   everybody in that the beach of skulls [TS]

00:18:24   what where the other body parts i asked [TS]

00:18:26   you to collect the skulls and make like [TS]

00:18:28   piles of skulls and another place [TS]

00:18:30   there's like ribs the skulls tend to [TS]

00:18:32   tend to be on top there well organized [TS]

00:18:34   as the people get shot all the the other [TS]

00:18:37   bones drop and the skulls land on top [TS]

00:18:39   they have used for the other body parts [TS]

00:18:41   they are machines they might like to put [TS]

00:18:43   them in like organize them and sort them [TS]

00:18:45   into a good point well they may have a [TS]

00:18:46   whole khadra humans that just sort the [TS]

00:18:49   bones and sort of sales and one spot [TS]

00:18:51   like the guys that have to run the [TS]

00:18:52   disposal units all day and not there's [TS]

00:18:54   also bone sorters that's good that makes [TS]

00:18:56   me that makes you feel better having fun [TS]

00:18:58   with it doesn't really make any man can [TS]

00:19:00   we talk a little bit about his next [TS]

00:19:01   flash forward there [TS]

00:19:02   oh yeah and he sees the the construction [TS]

00:19:04   machine I i really liked it because I [TS]

00:19:07   mean when I think about this movie [TS]

00:19:08   overall it's it's your stereotypical a [TS]

00:19:10   dude goes back in time and he's saving a [TS]

00:19:12   lady in blah blah blah but when he gets [TS]

00:19:14   forward his his fellow soldier who's [TS]

00:19:17   running around with him in and trying to [TS]

00:19:19   take out the giant machines is a woman [TS]

00:19:21   yeah so I just I thought that was really [TS]

00:19:22   cool right right at the beginning there [TS]

00:19:25   that you see it yeah the future maybe [TS]

00:19:27   the gender lines aren't going to be [TS]

00:19:28   quite so strictly drawn because you know [TS]

00:19:31   we just need to survive and ignore all [TS]

00:19:33   that BS that sort of comes along with it [TS]

00:19:34   now so that that seemed really perked me [TS]

00:19:37   up this time watching it and there's a [TS]

00:19:39   whole line later where [TS]

00:19:40   says that the women of his time are good [TS]

00:19:41   fighters that's the first thing that [TS]

00:19:42   comes to his mind [TS]

00:19:43   yes exactly like it of course she gets [TS]

00:19:47   killed but just about everybody in the [TS]

00:19:49   future gets killed so that's I think she [TS]

00:19:51   largely disintegrates and maybe the [TS]

00:19:52   skull is all that's left [TS]

00:19:54   ah maybe that's how it works [TS]

00:19:58   could be yeah I like that I like that [TS]

00:20:00   line later where he's like I you know [TS]

00:20:03   they're there they're warriors they're [TS]

00:20:05   very strong warriors women are the [TS]

00:20:07   future what do you mean I don't know [TS]

00:20:08   what you're talking about so glad [TS]

00:20:10   Henrickson and paul winfield eighties [TS]

00:20:12   cops they're the original lethal weapons [TS]

00:20:15   so excited to see the guy from wrath of [TS]

00:20:17   khan and you recognize him for what's [TS]

00:20:19   and mr. millennium yeah [TS]

00:20:22   oh I have such a huge Lance Henriksen [TS]

00:20:24   crisis i'll always be a bishop to me [TS]

00:20:26   yes well he gave up that's why I think [TS]

00:20:28   that's the source of my land Henry [TS]

00:20:30   single conviction [TS]

00:20:31   this is true you're right you know [TS]

00:20:32   rightly so absolutely [TS]

00:20:34   so there there in the eighties police [TS]

00:20:37   precinct before that we have the great [TS]

00:20:41   scene in the gun shop with Arnold [TS]

00:20:43   picking out is always up for that ok [TS]

00:20:45   he's picking out his new his armory is [TS]

00:20:48   portable armory [TS]

00:20:49   so if you own a gun shop wouldn't you be [TS]

00:20:51   hesitant to give people the materials to [TS]

00:20:54   arm themselves and then kill you and [TS]

00:20:56   take the guns [TS]

00:20:57   it does seem a little odd although this [TS]

00:20:59   gun shop owner does make a point of [TS]

00:21:01   saying any one of these is ideal for [TS]

00:21:03   home defense as Arnold as are looking at [TS]

00:21:05   his e 9 millimeters he might not be [TS]

00:21:09   entirely balanced to begin with [TS]

00:21:11   hey this guy looks like the governor [TS]

00:21:13   I'll trust him they got the time wrong [TS]

00:21:14   they're talking a little early [TS]

00:21:18   here's where we get roughly two-thirds [TS]

00:21:20   of Arnold's lines he reads on religious [TS]

00:21:23   guns that he looked about the phase [TS]

00:21:24   plasma cannon do you have one of those [TS]

00:21:26   in the 40-watt range [TS]

00:21:29   yeah it's just what you see here but [TS]

00:21:31   alright that I would kill you now that's [TS]

00:21:35   the whole scene wrong well that's that [TS]

00:21:37   might be his very first that wrong right [TS]

00:21:40   there might be his very first quip huh [TS]

00:21:42   I'm not sure he got any approach it at [TS]

00:21:45   Arnold clips in Conan I like the when [TS]

00:21:49   the cops i think it is call Sarah Connor [TS]

00:21:53   they get the the annoying answering [TS]

00:21:55   answering machine that i think is her [TS]

00:21:57   roommate [TS]

00:21:58   yes and that that's great because again [TS]

00:22:00   we're talking about these all these [TS]

00:22:01   machine things that happened in this [TS]

00:22:03   movie and that's the hi there [TS]

00:22:04   fooled you you're talking to a machine [TS]

00:22:07   yeah oh and it follows up with oh but [TS]

00:22:10   machines need love too [TS]

00:22:11   yes no ginger it doesn't go well for her [TS]

00:22:17   yes it seems a little odd that the they [TS]

00:22:19   would send the car that's watching [TS]

00:22:20   Sarah's house out on a call in order for [TS]

00:22:23   Arnold to walk up to the house you know [TS]

00:22:26   the bad luck it's not well it's not good [TS]

00:22:28   policing I'll tell you that no now one [TS]

00:22:31   Lance Henriksen would be very angry [TS]

00:22:32   about it later if he weren't dead then [TS]

00:22:36   nipple [TS]

00:22:37   timing is everything so so i'm sarah [TS]

00:22:40   connor is being stalked by michael biehn [TS]

00:22:43   which is funny she knows he's following [TS]

00:22:44   her and she's uh she's kind of creeped [TS]

00:22:47   out by that so she ducks into a swinging [TS]

00:22:50   nightclub called tech Noir [TS]

00:22:52   I know it's on pico it is on pico I know [TS]

00:22:55   yeah I find it hard to believe that that [TS]

00:22:57   that middle-aged police detective paul [TS]

00:22:59   winfield knows exactly where tech nor in [TS]

00:23:02   this this crappy like restaurant [TS]

00:23:05   converted into a really awful my club is [TS]

00:23:08   like they've tried to break up some [TS]

00:23:10   break dancing competitions that got out [TS]

00:23:11   of control or something yeah I just like [TS]

00:23:13   I felt like the idea that that that was [TS]

00:23:15   just giving us a little bit of a [TS]

00:23:17   backstory for him in a very subtle way I [TS]

00:23:19   think his character fleshed out a little [TS]

00:23:21   bit for me when he gave that line he [TS]

00:23:22   knows he also used to work the beat on [TS]

00:23:24   pico and so he knows where all the [TS]

00:23:27   businesses are on that's much less [TS]

00:23:30   interesting yeah you're right it sure is [TS]

00:23:31   also take more probably has only been [TS]

00:23:33   there for about like five days are done [TS]

00:23:36   believing it's a long-serving member of [TS]

00:23:39   the los angeles club scene i think both [TS]

00:23:41   Winfield and Hendricks and make them [TS]

00:23:43   make the best of their few moments on [TS]

00:23:45   screen in this movie [TS]

00:23:46   given that given how little time they [TS]

00:23:48   have I think we get a pretty good [TS]

00:23:49   fleshing out of their characters you [TS]

00:23:51   know Winfield of course the [TS]

00:23:52   long-suffering lieutenant and and [TS]

00:23:55   hendrickson you know he's he's got a lot [TS]

00:23:57   of stories he'd like to tell but chief [TS]

00:23:59   never lets him get to the end of the get [TS]

00:24:01   to the good part [TS]

00:24:03   is endlessly amused by thinks he's [TS]

00:24:05   seeing but the chief keeps him in line [TS]

00:24:06   its they're both pretty entertaining in [TS]

00:24:08   this they don't seem they seemed [TS]

00:24:10   competent to right i mean they're [TS]

00:24:11   they're they're dealing with something [TS]

00:24:13   that's completely outside of their of [TS]

00:24:15   their sphere of understanding and they [TS]

00:24:16   got they talk about its the phonebook [TS]

00:24:17   killer catchy name but they're actually [TS]

00:24:20   pretty fast buy it buy it buy standards [TS]

00:24:23   of these kinds of movies that they pick [TS]

00:24:24   up on after only two kills any other [TS]

00:24:27   horror movie it would take at least [TS]

00:24:28   three or four different different kills [TS]

00:24:30   and then it would still be the cops kind [TS]

00:24:32   of figuring out that there's a phonebook [TS]

00:24:33   killer that would be watching instead of [TS]

00:24:35   and refusing to believe it for no good [TS]

00:24:37   Yeah right [TS]

00:24:38   no there's not enough time in the in [TS]

00:24:40   this movie for them to be like that [TS]

00:24:42   right because and then not enough budget [TS]

00:24:44   to keep them around that many days yeah [TS]

00:24:45   so we've only got this police precinct [TS]

00:24:49   for these two scenes [TS]

00:24:50   that's her Megan County up there [TS]

00:24:53   actually is a little bit of a deleted [TS]

00:24:55   scene content with with lieutenant [TS]

00:24:58   Traxler paul winfield where he gradually [TS]

00:25:01   comes to believe Michael Biehn story uh [TS]

00:25:03   it was a it would end in the end is [TS]

00:25:06   they're leaving the building and he's [TS]

00:25:07   bleeding out he tells me he tells Kyle [TS]

00:25:10   you know you got to keep her safe but it [TS]

00:25:13   it really was pretty extraneous no he [TS]

00:25:17   didn't really need a character arc it's [TS]

00:25:19   actually a little better when he's just [TS]

00:25:20   kind of the anonymous police chief dies [TS]

00:25:23   technical or maybe my favorite thing in [TS]

00:25:25   this entire movie I've decided because [TS]

00:25:27   it is like the distilled eighties in oh [TS]

00:25:32   yeah that's a tease freebase right it is [TS]

00:25:34   so amazing but we cut away from tech [TS]

00:25:37   Noir to visit with ginger and her [TS]

00:25:40   boyfriend rick rossovich from top gun so [TS]

00:25:42   maybe bust you up man and Roxanne right [TS]

00:25:46   he's the dumb see that is inserted yes [TS]

00:25:48   yes yes yes I recognize him from okay so [TS]

00:25:51   here's the years we have two more [TS]

00:25:53   message that james cameron's laying down [TS]

00:25:55   here because ginger after having sex [TS]

00:25:58   with her boyfriend decides she really [TS]

00:26:00   wants a giant sandwich so I can argue so [TS]

00:26:05   she puts on her what I mean a giant said [TS]

00:26:07   not a little set a giant sandwich so [TS]

00:26:09   like a Dagwood kind of school [TS]

00:26:11   this is a writer who understands women [TS]

00:26:13   so she puts on her she puts on her [TS]

00:26:15   Walkman and I feel like this is a [TS]

00:26:17   commentary on you know we're shutting [TS]

00:26:19   out our world she's gonna be in it's the [TS]

00:26:21   middle of the night or whatever you put [TS]

00:26:22   on her Walkman she's gonna make herself [TS]

00:26:24   a giant sandwich and as a result she [TS]

00:26:26   doesn't even realize that there's a [TS]

00:26:28   killer cyborg in her apartment until [TS]

00:26:31   it's far too late [TS]

00:26:32   that's the scene that really it just [TS]

00:26:33   plays out like a slasher yeah sure flick [TS]

00:26:36   their that was one name that was when I [TS]

00:26:37   was watching it realizing this time how [TS]

00:26:40   much more the horror stands out the [TS]

00:26:42   science fiction than can I think about [TS]

00:26:44   it in hindsight I always remember the [TS]

00:26:46   syfy bit because I think it's the story [TS]

00:26:48   that really appeals to me but then [TS]

00:26:50   watching it play out it was it was a lot [TS]

00:26:52   more horror II you know definitely agree [TS]

00:26:55   that the you know that the headphones [TS]

00:26:57   was another nod to machine you know [TS]

00:26:59   yeah they're they're troublesome that's [TS]

00:27:01   actually very similar to a scene in [TS]

00:27:02   halloween where I think it's pj soles is [TS]

00:27:04   raiding the fridge well I was creeping [TS]

00:27:06   up on her so I may even be in the [TS]

00:27:08   category of homage but yet it plays out [TS]

00:27:11   very horror ESCA specialist she's [TS]

00:27:13   continuing to make your sandwich is her [TS]

00:27:15   boyfriend is being kicked all around the [TS]

00:27:18   room now [TS]

00:27:19   seriously look at look at that sandwich [TS]

00:27:21   it is it is the biggest in which you [TS]

00:27:23   will ever see it is awesome even if she [TS]

00:27:25   was making for herself and him and they [TS]

00:27:27   would be room for for the Terminator to [TS]

00:27:29   have some it is a huge sandwich that's [TS]

00:27:31   what I was no recollection of this film [TS]

00:27:33   I remember they're actually having been [TS]

00:27:35   more blood and guts and and having me [TS]

00:27:38   watched it I thought wow there's there's [TS]

00:27:39   very little i did i mention that because [TS]

00:27:41   this is the one scene is as the [TS]

00:27:43   boyfriend pops out of the door and says [TS]

00:27:45   no and in arnold then bursts out after [TS]

00:27:49   he's a little bloody and a little beaten [TS]

00:27:52   up and in bad shape but it's it's really [TS]

00:27:54   not bad and I i remember it being a lot [TS]

00:27:57   more i remember this the r-rating having [TS]

00:27:59   been earned a lot to a lot of cutting [TS]

00:28:02   away of you know you you the gun goes up [TS]

00:28:05   to 2.2 the person's head and then I were [TS]

00:28:07   first shot and you hear the the bang of [TS]

00:28:10   the gun but you don't see like there had [TS]

00:28:11   exploded the brains why it's like it's [TS]

00:28:15   the horror of you know what happened to [TS]

00:28:17   them and yeah and and I was I like the [TS]

00:28:20   restraint but also it's cheaper so [TS]

00:28:23   yeah there's that he did learn from [TS]

00:28:24   roger corman after all the man had to be [TS]

00:28:27   cheap sure she poor I mean that as a [TS]

00:28:31   compliment ya but ya know why they and [TS]

00:28:33   you could argue that you don't you don't [TS]

00:28:34   need that that's it you don't that's a [TS]

00:28:36   different kind of movie right you can [TS]

00:28:37   you can go with the blood and guts or [TS]

00:28:39   you can go with the the more [TS]

00:28:40   psychological of you know and that's the [TS]

00:28:42   point here is this is a relentless [TS]

00:28:44   killing machine [TS]

00:28:45   well that's the thing is I there isn't a [TS]

00:28:47   lot of blood and guts and yet i still [TS]

00:28:48   remember it as having been pretty [TS]

00:28:50   violent pretty pretty bloody and in fact [TS]

00:28:52   that's it was just me it's what you [TS]

00:28:54   don't see it you know what what's in [TS]

00:28:57   your head is going to be more horrific [TS]

00:28:58   than anything they can show you [TS]

00:29:00   so if they don't show you anything just [TS]

00:29:02   like oh I know what that was I don't [TS]

00:29:03   know about that hurts [TS]

00:29:06   well it's kinda like in psycho you never [TS]

00:29:09   actually see the knife plunging body but [TS]

00:29:12   everyone knows how i sought over she [TS]

00:29:13   fits over and over [TS]

00:29:15   no never happened uh let's see uh come [TS]

00:29:19   with me if you want to live [TS]

00:29:21   now i do want to say before we get to [TS]

00:29:23   that particular line that of the things [TS]

00:29:27   that I think still work pretty well in [TS]

00:29:28   this movie the scene in tech more tech [TS]

00:29:31   nor where the slow mo kind of kicks in [TS]

00:29:33   yeah the crappy eighties music slowly [TS]

00:29:35   gets more and more muffled by the bumble [TS]

00:29:38   that that scene is still wonderfully [TS]

00:29:40   tense and I think as effective as it was [TS]

00:29:42   in nineteen eighty-four which is good to [TS]

00:29:44   see this is the one seemed to where you [TS]

00:29:46   really get the payoff of or you know the [TS]

00:29:49   Terminator goes down right there [TS]

00:29:51   gunshots he goes down and and and you [TS]

00:29:55   earn that like he's not dead because [TS]

00:29:59   he's you know this magical creature is [TS]

00:30:02   it like a unicorn it just like but yeah [TS]

00:30:06   I guess I like all the technical stuff [TS]

00:30:08   but this is the moment and again i have [TS]

00:30:10   this line in my head because it's [TS]

00:30:12   repeated in the second terminator movie [TS]

00:30:14   from arnold schwarzenegger but here it's [TS]

00:30:17   not it's it's it's a car race who says [TS]

00:30:19   Michael being who says come with me if [TS]

00:30:21   you want to live and this is the moment [TS]

00:30:23   where we know now it's been revealed [TS]

00:30:24   he's a killer robot that's going to be [TS]

00:30:26   trying to kill sarah Conner we get a POV [TS]

00:30:28   shot for the first time we can talk [TS]

00:30:32   about the govt shot yes [TS]

00:30:34   so back in the day you know in the VHS [TS]

00:30:38   days you could try to pause during the [TS]

00:30:40   Terminator POV but you would get a bunch [TS]

00:30:43   of jittery tracking lines and that would [TS]

00:30:46   be about it you have no chance of ever [TS]

00:30:47   reading what's actually on the screen [TS]

00:30:49   during this POV shots [TS]

00:30:51   nowadays with blu-ray you can read it [TS]

00:30:53   and you can discover that you're looking [TS]

00:30:54   at somebody's assembly code with [TS]

00:30:57   comments no less i'm not entirely sure [TS]

00:30:59   why the t101 was programmed with [TS]

00:31:02   comments including comments that read [TS]

00:31:05   poke 16k Ram bank so he's got a 16k bank [TS]

00:31:10   of memory somewhere in inside that metal [TS]

00:31:12   skull you know which just a hair is like [TS]

00:31:15   a timex sinclair yeah so there's there's [TS]

00:31:17   some pretty old code you know in some in [TS]

00:31:20   some of these movies where you got a [TS]

00:31:21   cyborg or a robot POV what you end up [TS]

00:31:23   with him I think Terminator 2 is like [TS]

00:31:25   this it actually is showing you like [TS]

00:31:27   what the on-board computer system is is [TS]

00:31:31   is doing so would be like Target and you [TS]

00:31:34   know tracking sarah connor and all that [TS]

00:31:36   kind of stuff on the screen this movie [TS]

00:31:37   makes no attempt to do that at all it's [TS]

00:31:40   literally just like we put a red thing [TS]

00:31:41   so everything will look a little [TS]

00:31:43   different we got some computer crap that [TS]

00:31:45   will just appear and disappear i have [TS]

00:31:47   whatever some credit that they actually [TS]

00:31:48   did use something that came from a [TS]

00:31:50   computer its computer reference for a [TS]

00:31:53   little bit later you see an output of a [TS]

00:31:54   run from key perfect four-point-oh which [TS]

00:31:56   was a checksum generator when you use to [TS]

00:31:59   type in programs for magazines and and [TS]

00:32:02   you run this checksum generator to make [TS]

00:32:04   sure you didn't miss type one of the [TS]

00:32:05   various hex codes deep cuts to and so it [TS]

00:32:08   again in this case the file in question [TS]

00:32:10   is overlaid on object vly dot obj wow so [TS]

00:32:15   i did i did a little searching around [TS]

00:32:16   for overall I'd object the internet it [TS]

00:32:18   turns out that code was originally [TS]

00:32:20   written by harlan ellison back in [TS]

00:32:22   nineteen deep winter acknowledgement to [TS]

00:32:30   the computer programs a Harlan Ellison I [TS]

00:32:33   have no computer and I must code oh I i [TS]

00:32:36   saw ki perfect for dough and I just [TS]

00:32:38   started crying because wow you guys [TS]

00:32:43   tried but not not so hard [TS]

00:32:46   so much it did come from a computer but [TS]

00:32:49   it was nice of Skynet to leave the [TS]

00:32:51   comments it in this anybody wants to [TS]

00:32:53   dissect Arnold later and figure out what [TS]

00:32:55   makes his 16k Ram bank work [TS]

00:32:59   yeah you know I actually put in my notes [TS]

00:33:00   that that bit like I said watching this [TS]

00:33:03   was not as a quite as enjoyable as I [TS]

00:33:05   sort of remembered and i just put in my [TS]

00:33:07   notes this movie must have been before I [TS]

00:33:09   get bored with car chases [TS]

00:33:10   there's an awful lot of car chases going [TS]

00:33:12   on and I find extended car chases and [TS]

00:33:14   action scenes highly boring something [TS]

00:33:17   like in the the techno our action [TS]

00:33:18   sequence that that is fun to me that [TS]

00:33:21   that by going nuts are choreographed for [TS]

00:33:23   ya when it goes on and on i just i get i [TS]

00:33:27   get a little bored so I appreciate the [TS]

00:33:28   exposition part of it but I felt like it [TS]

00:33:31   was the chasing didn't need to go on [TS]

00:33:33   quite as long as well it's not just car [TS]

00:33:35   chases either roughly two-thirds of this [TS]

00:33:37   movie is somebody being chased you know [TS]

00:33:39   where it's either on foot or in cars [TS]

00:33:42   will get the cops chasing read through [TS]

00:33:44   the department store we get the giant [TS]

00:33:45   future robot chasing reach through the [TS]

00:33:47   hellish future scape Terminator chases [TS]

00:33:50   recent Sarah on foot from tech Noir [TS]

00:33:51   there's a car chase that he chases him [TS]

00:33:53   later on a motorcycle and he chases him [TS]

00:33:55   a fuel truck then the skeleton chases [TS]

00:33:57   recent Sarah the Machine job and then [TS]

00:34:00   the skeleton torso slow-speed chase and [TS]

00:34:02   Sara through the hydraulic press [TS]

00:34:04   yep and then thankfully the chases are [TS]

00:34:06   over but it's really very chase heavy [TS]

00:34:09   Phil yeah I felt like they could they [TS]

00:34:11   could shorten it could shorten it down [TS]

00:34:13   to like a half-hour episode of of some [TS]

00:34:16   TV show and I would have probably been [TS]

00:34:17   just like sitting with the outer limits [TS]

00:34:19   you don't typically see the last Chase [TS]

00:34:24   is that the top of the press catches up [TS]

00:34:26   with the bottom of the press [TS]

00:34:27   oh that's a good point the last last [TS]

00:34:30   well then maybe the kid like chases [TS]

00:34:31   sarah connor to take her photo could be [TS]

00:34:33   there you go yeah and she's chasing a [TS]

00:34:36   storm at the very and she is i just [TS]

00:34:39   realized there's probably like a [TS]

00:34:40   45-minute cassette tape somewhere in [TS]

00:34:42   your Jeep about how to use the yellow [TS]

00:34:43   pages [TS]

00:34:44   oh yeah that's good [TS]

00:34:47   the UH this is the image of the [TS]

00:34:49   exposition here is that Kyrie stels her [TS]

00:34:52   he's not a robot is a sideboard this can [TS]

00:34:54   happen 40 years ago i wrote down I i do [TS]

00:34:56   like this line a lot it's the it can't [TS]

00:34:58   be bargained with [TS]

00:34:59   a reason with it doesn't feel pity or [TS]

00:35:01   fear it won't stop until you're dead [TS]

00:35:04   yeah that's really nice and and that's [TS]

00:35:06   what I like about about this monster [TS]

00:35:08   movies horror movie that's also a sci-fi [TS]

00:35:10   movie is so often you get these you get [TS]

00:35:13   these creatures that keep coming and you [TS]

00:35:15   kill them and they they're still alive [TS]

00:35:16   and they keep coming and here that's the [TS]

00:35:18   premise of the Terminator is it will [TS]

00:35:21   just keep coming all it does kill it [TS]

00:35:22   can't be reasoned with you can so we get [TS]

00:35:24   a we get a car chase with some [TS]

00:35:27   exposition it [TS]

00:35:30   I like that she thats Sarah buys into [TS]

00:35:33   what reeses telling her fairy fairly [TS]

00:35:34   quickly here which is somewhat realistic [TS]

00:35:37   given that she's just seen him you know [TS]

00:35:38   shot with a shotgun multiple times and [TS]

00:35:40   then get up right but she initially [TS]

00:35:42   tries to get away [TS]

00:35:43   she's in a panic and then she eventually [TS]

00:35:44   settles in that you know about probably [TS]

00:35:47   that guy shouldn't have been getting up [TS]

00:35:48   and walking towards me so we don't need [TS]

00:35:50   to go through 20 minutes of her [TS]

00:35:51   continuing to try to get away from [TS]

00:35:53   research into any any silliness like [TS]

00:35:56   that the line that i liked happened [TS]

00:35:58   during that scene where you know she's [TS]

00:36:00   trying to bite him or stabbed or [TS]

00:36:02   whatever it is and and he says to her [TS]

00:36:03   cyborgs don't feel pain i do don't do [TS]

00:36:06   that again so it's a good line it also [TS]

00:36:09   really just sort of delineate that [TS]

00:36:10   difference between you know i am the [TS]

00:36:12   human here who has come to help you he [TS]

00:36:15   is on the other side you know I'm the [TS]

00:36:17   good guy and she does get it pretty [TS]

00:36:19   quick [TS]

00:36:20   also after he while he's driving and he [TS]

00:36:23   tells about about the Terminator and all [TS]

00:36:24   that he then recounts the entire plot of [TS]

00:36:26   Terminator to essentially conveniently [TS]

00:36:29   forward promoting the next movie in the [TS]

00:36:31   series I thought that was really nice [TS]

00:36:33   one thing that bothers me in this scene [TS]

00:36:36   i realized that Reese has to be scarred [TS]

00:36:38   up noticeably but did they have to stick [TS]

00:36:39   one right under the corner of his mouth [TS]

00:36:41   maybe this whole scene it looks like as [TS]

00:36:43   a chunk of spaghetti stuck to this gym [TS]

00:36:45   it in the parking garage they have this [TS]

00:36:49   they have this rapid exchange of gunfire [TS]

00:36:53   followed by more cars driving around the [TS]

00:36:56   chase but but the the thing that really [TS]

00:36:59   struck me about this is that after [TS]

00:37:01   immediately following this massive [TS]

00:37:03   exchange of gunfire they're rolling in [TS]

00:37:05   separate aisles and the Terminator [TS]

00:37:06   shooting out their windows and they're [TS]

00:37:08   shooting back and all of that as soon as [TS]

00:37:10   that's over [TS]

00:37:11   sara is sitting there like she's [TS]

00:37:13   go into the 7-eleven or something and [TS]

00:37:15   that was the moment that really broke it [TS]

00:37:17   for me where I thought you know she [TS]

00:37:18   should be really freaked out and she [TS]

00:37:20   totally I think it's just something [TS]

00:37:22   about the way it was directed at the way [TS]

00:37:24   that they were thinking about it seemed [TS]

00:37:26   like a mistake to me she's just [TS]

00:37:27   completely like she's just taking a ride [TS]

00:37:29   somewhere [TS]

00:37:30   one thing that's always kind of bothered [TS]

00:37:32   me about his whole long exposition on [TS]

00:37:34   the future and and what went down [TS]

00:37:36   he points out that the old Terminator [TS]

00:37:38   models had rubber skin but these new [TS]

00:37:40   ones are much harder to spot ya [TS]

00:37:42   it strikes me when we later see the [TS]

00:37:44   Hubble that he lives in and all the [TS]

00:37:46   emaciated people who eat nothing but [TS]

00:37:47   gruel and rats you know just look for [TS]

00:37:50   the gigantic Austrian yeah that's [TS]

00:37:52   probably your terminated the one that's [TS]

00:37:55   not all you know it looks like he just [TS]

00:37:57   got out of a death camp that's the one [TS]

00:37:59   he's the Terminator shoot him would be [TS]

00:38:02   this this movie The Matrix have a lot in [TS]

00:38:04   common right sun post-apocalypse [TS]

00:38:07   machines take control [TS]

00:38:08   there's a are they real humans are the [TS]

00:38:11   machines you know there are a lot of lot [TS]

00:38:14   of those things that these things have [TS]

00:38:15   in common and that means it's sensible [TS]

00:38:16   that did it would have to be a fairly [TS]

00:38:18   muscle-bound looking human because they [TS]

00:38:20   have that huge skeleton they've got a [TS]

00:38:22   cover-up sure but he doesn't blend in [TS]

00:38:25   with the crowd very well no I it's [TS]

00:38:27   unclear to me if there are humans being [TS]

00:38:28   kept as pets somewhere else in there [TS]

00:38:30   what why do you build I mean I you think [TS]

00:38:33   that if you're building the Terminator [TS]

00:38:34   soy blend in and fight the humans that [TS]

00:38:37   they would like you said match the [TS]

00:38:40   humans and not look like big well-fed [TS]

00:38:42   muscley Austrians yes I don't know that [TS]

00:38:45   they necessarily need to blend in for [TS]

00:38:47   that long I think they're just trying to [TS]

00:38:49   infiltrate because really as soon as [TS]

00:38:50   they got through the door [TS]

00:38:51   it's you know the dogs sniffed amount of [TS]

00:38:54   dollars you know you just started firing [TS]

00:38:56   he just needed to get through the door [TS]

00:38:58   he's under like a cowl or something but [TS]

00:39:00   even underneath the cal you would expect [TS]

00:39:02   you know the bulging biceps to make [TS]

00:39:03   themselves pretty obvious right was that [TS]

00:39:06   huge guy with us when we went out pretty [TS]

00:39:08   serious was it oh well I want some gruel [TS]

00:39:13   and I got some rats to wait for me said [TS]

00:39:15   the Terminator gets wounded by the way [TS]

00:39:17   we have what I think is maybe the [TS]

00:39:18   grossest thing in this movie which is [TS]

00:39:20   the exacto knife to the I self-surgery [TS]

00:39:22   that's getting [TS]

00:39:23   yeah yeah I have to say for Arnold say [TS]

00:39:28   what you will about his acting [TS]

00:39:29   capabilities but his vaguely robotic [TS]

00:39:31   acting is I think pretty darn good in [TS]

00:39:33   this movie [TS]

00:39:34   yeah particularly in the in the cop car [TS]

00:39:36   is he's scanning and and kind of like [TS]

00:39:38   trying to locate where they're hidden [TS]

00:39:41   out in the other car he does a pretty [TS]

00:39:44   fine job of looking robotic here and [TS]

00:39:46   there's some nice subtle makeup work [TS]

00:39:48   that helps here too i think but he's [TS]

00:39:51   decent in this movie it [TS]

00:39:53   he's also very much better than the fake [TS]

00:39:55   Arnold head that we see in a couple of [TS]

00:39:58   scenes but see that's what i'm saying is [TS]

00:40:00   they set up that the fake Arnold head it [TS]

00:40:03   works a lot better than it should [TS]

00:40:04   because of the work the way you really [TS]

00:40:06   are in the film and and also that makeup [TS]

00:40:08   work that they have on him in that car [TS]

00:40:10   seen it right he already looks a little [TS]

00:40:11   fake at that point that's true the to [TS]

00:40:15   pull the police psychologist who talks [TS]

00:40:18   to 2a oh god I left elbow and is the [TS]

00:40:21   criminal psychologist he's definitely [TS]

00:40:22   one of those he's that guy he is a high [TS]

00:40:24   quality grade a eighties movie douchebag [TS]

00:40:27   well that's always going to say is he [TS]

00:40:28   this this is the same role as William [TS]

00:40:31   Atherton and go to 70 i generally Oh No [TS]

00:40:34   decade and films ever produced more [TS]

00:40:35   wonderfully smarmy bastard that he is so [TS]

00:40:39   good at this and he shows up in the [TS]

00:40:40   other films to is every called isn't he [TS]

00:40:43   oh yeah he's in the second why he's in [TS]

00:40:45   the second and the third is that he [TS]

00:40:46   Sarah's keep her at the institution and [TS]

00:40:49   I think you're right attitude you know [TS]

00:40:50   you're right so he made it he made an [TS]

00:40:52   impact during his short scene [TS]

00:40:54   yeah oh no it's a good it's a good you [TS]

00:40:56   know hehe is the just like just like [TS]

00:40:59   women and ghostbusters he is this [TS]

00:41:01   authority figure that thinks he knows [TS]

00:41:02   everything and in a normal world he [TS]

00:41:04   would be right but this is the sci-fi [TS]

00:41:06   world and he's completely wrong he [TS]

00:41:08   pauses the tape to talk about i could [TS]

00:41:10   make so much money just you know taking [TS]

00:41:13   this guy out on the carnival circuit [TS]

00:41:14   illusions are brilliant but he never [TS]

00:41:17   really finds out that he's wrong because [TS]

00:41:19   when i first saw him I was like isn't [TS]

00:41:20   that the guy from the second unit seems [TS]

00:41:22   that seems weird i just assumed he would [TS]

00:41:24   get killed but then he walks out of the [TS]

00:41:25   police station just as Arnold's coming [TS]

00:41:27   in so he gets to go home and he you know [TS]

00:41:30   he gets to eat up whatever excuse the [TS]

00:41:32   police end up trying to come up with 44 [TS]

00:41:34   what happened just no terrorist [TS]

00:41:36   whatever random generic thing is so he [TS]

00:41:38   can go on believing that he was right [TS]

00:41:40   the whole time and he finally gets to [TS]

00:41:41   lock her up later on [TS]

00:41:43   he's the expert somehow he gets a page [TS]

00:41:46   so he has to look down to clear his [TS]

00:41:47   pager [TS]

00:41:48   well we're at the we're at that moment [TS]

00:41:50   now we're a visitor pays pays a visit [TS]

00:41:53   today LOL what is that Jason well it's [TS]

00:41:56   it's a it's a classic moment where [TS]

00:41:58   Arnold Schwarzenegger decides he's going [TS]

00:42:01   to go in the front door of the police [TS]

00:42:02   station and just sort of state of the [TS]

00:42:04   back see if he could he can check in and [TS]

00:42:07   provide some ID and that doesn't happen [TS]

00:42:09   and so he wants to reassure the clerk at [TS]

00:42:12   the front desk that uh that that he'll [TS]

00:42:15   be back [TS]

00:42:17   I think your plight of him to do that [TS]

00:42:19   iconic scene for a reason because it's [TS]

00:42:21   hilarious [TS]

00:42:22   it really it's got that Indiana Jones [TS]

00:42:24   shooting the swordsman gotta feel do it [TS]

00:42:26   well and that the funny thing i mean [TS]

00:42:28   people quote the line but the funny [TS]

00:42:29   thing is not just that he says he'll be [TS]

00:42:31   back it's that he's back immediately [TS]

00:42:33   with a car driving through the front of [TS]

00:42:35   the police station [TS]

00:42:36   well he also holds back a little and he [TS]

00:42:38   looks any kind of sizes up the the [TS]

00:42:40   tensile strength of the partition that [TS]

00:42:42   get a desk clerk is hi I'm behind which [TS]

00:42:44   is a nice bit and then yes he's right [TS]

00:42:47   back [TS]

00:42:47   he didn't say how long it would be [TS]

00:42:48   before you don't know that there's also [TS]

00:42:51   that really nice [TS]

00:42:52   it seems extraneous at the time but it [TS]

00:42:55   suddenly becomes incredibly important [TS]

00:42:57   which is he [TS]

00:42:58   he can't hurt you here we got like 30 [TS]

00:42:59   guys here which we are you can see to [TS]

00:43:02   see him killed my goal and connects [TS]

00:43:04   thanks for giving us the body count up [TS]

00:43:06   front [TS]

00:43:07   yeah we got 30 guys kill 30 guys and [TS]

00:43:11   then the Terminator comes and he just [TS]

00:43:13   just starts killing all the cops which [TS]

00:43:15   wich after after the comp massacre is [TS]

00:43:17   done there's this scene where they're [TS]

00:43:19   looking at the TV and there's this a.m [TS]

00:43:21   and I was thinking there's no way that [TS]

00:43:24   30 cops would be shot dead in downtown [TS]

00:43:27   Los Angeles and there'd be like story [TS]

00:43:30   number three on the local news is though [TS]

00:43:32   there was an incident at the police [TS]

00:43:34   station right there's no way that would [TS]

00:43:36   be bad for the eighties this was bad for [TS]

00:43:40   3 24 hour news so you know know if that [TS]

00:43:43   if if if the 30-30 guys police station [TS]

00:43:47   were were shot to death they would [TS]

00:43:49   listen to it then [TS]

00:43:50   you see you were there there there [TS]

00:43:52   listening to the radio and they talk [TS]

00:43:53   about the largest manhunt has been [TS]

00:43:55   spotted in California history of [TS]

00:43:57   something [TS]

00:43:58   yeah doesn't get on it fairly fast ya [TS]

00:44:01   sure it's just it surprised me that it [TS]

00:44:02   wasn't quite as bad as a freak out as [TS]

00:44:05   well this is late at night this is this [TS]

00:44:06   is a this is post John shoe back time at [TS]

00:44:09   this point so they the kid he kills [TS]

00:44:11   everybody basically uh and and then [TS]

00:44:16   sarah & and reefs have to escape we get [TS]

00:44:21   another nice little horror scene in [TS]

00:44:22   there too as you know is it the [TS]

00:44:24   Terminator inside the door outside the [TS]

00:44:25   door the shadow outside the door but [TS]

00:44:27   hiding under the desk [TS]

00:44:28   it's it's it's kyle reese instead and [TS]

00:44:30   they escape along with their accomplice [TS]

00:44:32   a very rapidly played synthesizer for [TS]

00:44:38   that don't have a little by little the [TS]

00:44:42   horrible now that's it you got it you [TS]

00:44:45   build it you can be the score for [TS]

00:44:48   terminator four five six [TS]

00:44:50   whatever genocide I they had a bit [TS]

00:44:54   underpass or something like an underpass [TS]

00:44:57   I don't know it's an underpass alright [TS]

00:44:59   ya hear cars driving overhead and this [TS]

00:45:02   is where this is where we get the [TS]

00:45:04   another flash forward right his future [TS]

00:45:07   time [TS]

00:45:07   yep this one's long another enormous man [TS]

00:45:10   verse percent shoot everybody now this [TS]

00:45:14   happens all the time [TS]

00:45:15   filthy people eat gruel there are rats [TS]

00:45:17   that are eating as well and Sarah's [TS]

00:45:20   picture turns up [TS]

00:45:21   yeah we use television sets as make sure [TS]

00:45:23   fireplaces the future is not so bad [TS]

00:45:27   friend [TS]

00:45:27   that's a good honestly i would i would [TS]

00:45:30   enjoy that more than some TV shows I'm [TS]

00:45:32   scenically yeah it's been that kind of [TS]

00:45:35   season there's that there's a little pre [TS]

00:45:40   discussion in the in the underpass about [TS]

00:45:43   about what John Connor is like and the [TS]

00:45:47   rice line here where she asks him to [TS]

00:45:49   describe her son and and recess he's [TS]

00:45:52   about my height which is a nice little [TS]

00:45:54   bit of foreshadowing you know I really [TS]

00:45:57   like that she she keeps throughout the [TS]

00:45:59   whole film she keeps asking him you know [TS]

00:46:00   talk to me tell me more things that is [TS]

00:46:02   absolutely [TS]

00:46:03   kind of thing that would help me through [TS]

00:46:05   such a awful situation like that just [TS]

00:46:08   you know keep talking keep my mind [TS]

00:46:09   occupied and that seems like a really [TS]

00:46:11   simple and realistic thing to do and I'm [TS]

00:46:14   I've been trying to think of other films [TS]

00:46:16   that that that sort of thing happens and [TS]

00:46:18   it doesn't happen as often as I feel [TS]

00:46:19   like it should you get the impression [TS]

00:46:20   that she has pretty good instincts for [TS]

00:46:22   survival and she she whips up a pretty [TS]

00:46:26   good field dressing on his arm on her [TS]

00:46:28   first try [TS]

00:46:29   you and I i assume that part of why she [TS]

00:46:32   keeps asking for description is because [TS]

00:46:34   she needs to store it up for use later [TS]

00:46:35   right [TS]

00:46:36   she's already kind of sensing that she's [TS]

00:46:38   she's got the weight of the world on her [TS]

00:46:40   shoulders and so she's preparing well [TS]

00:46:42   she says do I look like the mother of [TS]

00:46:44   the future but this is this story is in [TS]

00:46:46   that way this is this is sara realizing [TS]

00:46:49   who she's going to be and it's not like [TS]

00:46:53   who she needs to be and she has to [TS]

00:46:54   change who she is it's like she's [TS]

00:46:56   capable of doing these things and so she [TS]

00:46:58   does them in the future and it's a it's [TS]

00:47:01   quite a transformation I mean it's not [TS]

00:47:02   quite as much a transformation is the [TS]

00:47:04   first time we see her in Terminator 2 [TS]

00:47:05   but but it's quite a transformation from [TS]

00:47:08   when she's on that scooter at the [TS]

00:47:10   beginning when she's driving into the [TS]

00:47:11   mountains at the end I think right yeah [TS]

00:47:13   steven says you know you're talking [TS]

00:47:15   about things I haven't done yet in the [TS]

00:47:16   past tense it's driving me crazy [TS]

00:47:18   I bet that it's kind of a mind trip [TS]

00:47:20   actually takes it really well she does a [TS]

00:47:22   pretty good job of a kind of having the [TS]

00:47:24   duality of her character come out in [TS]

00:47:25   this because you even towards the end [TS]

00:47:27   where she tells Reese you know you stand [TS]

00:47:29   up soldier [TS]

00:47:30   she still sounds like kind of the cutesy [TS]

00:47:32   trendy sarah connor of earlier [TS]

00:47:35   she's not she's not made the full [TS]

00:47:36   transition even at that point so she [TS]

00:47:38   does have a pretty pretty good job with [TS]

00:47:40   this character she does i think one of [TS]

00:47:41   the other things that i noticed we got [TS]

00:47:43   all our car chases watching her toughen [TS]

00:47:46   up throughout she even suddenly plays it [TS]

00:47:49   differently when they're in the car [TS]

00:47:50   doing the chases from from one to the [TS]

00:47:52   next to the next the chasing at the end [TS]

00:47:54   when she's driving that truck [TS]

00:47:56   she's driving with way more [TS]

00:47:57   determination than she was driving the [TS]

00:47:59   car earlier so she just but it's not [TS]

00:48:02   over-the-top it's not like she's totally [TS]

00:48:04   perfect at it yet it's if it's a [TS]

00:48:06   believable amount of transformation and [TS]

00:48:08   she plays it well I they end up at the [TS]

00:48:10   motel where she asks like we talked [TS]

00:48:12   about earlier [TS]

00:48:13   tell me about the women in your time was [TS]

00:48:15   there one was there someone [TS]

00:48:17   no no there there good warriors and then [TS]

00:48:21   he talks about her picture and how you [TS]

00:48:23   were locked in a great line you were [TS]

00:48:25   young like you are now I love the tenses [TS]

00:48:30   in the grammar of this film could see [TS]

00:48:32   you seem so sad and of course we will [TS]

00:48:34   see that scene where that picture is [TS]

00:48:36   taken later in the movie [TS]

00:48:38   this is the point to where Sarah gives [TS]

00:48:39   her quote and quote mom the hotel phone [TS]

00:48:41   number so apparently your instincts [TS]

00:48:43   aren't so good after all [TS]

00:48:45   oh yeah but it gives us that that [TS]

00:48:46   wonderful pan across the darkened cabin [TS]

00:48:48   up in Big Bear as we kind of take in [TS]

00:48:50   that huge shotgun hole in the door and [TS]

00:48:52   we realized that's probably not mom [TS]

00:48:54   talking and then yet suddenly it's [TS]

00:48:56   revealed yet its determinant another [TS]

00:48:58   power of the turbine which we got a [TS]

00:49:00   little bit of earlier when he speaks as [TS]

00:49:02   the cop on the on the radio so little [TS]

00:49:06   setup their pays off nicely those of you [TS]

00:49:09   who like michael biehn i'm going to say [TS]

00:49:10   something that maybe you will dislike [TS]

00:49:12   but I'm not gonna throw it out there [TS]

00:49:13   that this moment having watched the this [TS]

00:49:16   is the this scene between the living [TS]

00:49:18   Hamilton michael biehn in the motel room [TS]

00:49:19   i thought to myself i think this guy's [TS]

00:49:22   not very charismatic with this move with [TS]

00:49:24   this movie have been more effective if [TS]

00:49:26   there was somebody who is a bigger star [TS]

00:49:29   or a bigger personality in this part [TS]

00:49:32   because he seems kinda like a cipher to [TS]

00:49:34   me [TS]

00:49:35   yeah how do i love him i find him just [TS]

00:49:38   he's he's not over-the-top he's not [TS]

00:49:41   super charismatic he just he's a real [TS]

00:49:43   person he's a soldier he's he's a virgin [TS]

00:49:45   I mean this is gonna be the kind of guy [TS]

00:49:47   who's super smooth and comes and sweeps [TS]

00:49:49   her off her feet [TS]

00:49:50   he's just trying to get the job done and [TS]

00:49:52   make her safe and I think that in itself [TS]

00:49:54   just the fact that he just cares so much [TS]

00:49:57   is is much more endearing than it would [TS]

00:50:00   have been if he was you know giving her [TS]

00:50:01   a wink and equip or something like that [TS]

00:50:03   i just i would like the way he played [TS]

00:50:05   the character it was underplayed and for [TS]

00:50:07   me that completely work and it's not [TS]

00:50:09   just because he's dreamy [TS]

00:50:10   I change back there during other parts [TS]

00:50:14   of the movie i have some problems with [TS]

00:50:15   him I I think he could have been a bit [TS]

00:50:16   stronger as an actor but in this I think [TS]

00:50:18   in this lead up to the love scene I [TS]

00:50:20   think he's actually pretty good he looks [TS]

00:50:22   yeah delightfully uncomfortable with [TS]

00:50:24   what's going on like he's not really [TS]

00:50:25   sure what you almost like a little kid [TS]

00:50:27   who's about to have his first experience [TS]

00:50:29   you know [TS]

00:50:30   I think he does that very well there are [TS]

00:50:33   there other sequences where I feel like [TS]

00:50:34   you know maybe a little more emphasis on [TS]

00:50:37   certain lines would have to work i'll [TS]

00:50:39   give you that yeah and-and-and as Jason [TS]

00:50:42   noted earlier they come with me if you [TS]

00:50:44   want to live which turned out to be an [TS]

00:50:46   iconic line is is it's kind of a clunker [TS]

00:50:48   it's deliver he yeah it it's an iconic [TS]

00:50:51   line in the second second movie right [TS]

00:50:54   well I mean but it's in the second movie [TS]

00:50:55   because it was iconic from the first we [TS]

00:50:57   well yeah he's fine i just i i gotta [TS]

00:51:00   tell you when i think about this movie I [TS]

00:51:01   think about Arnold Schwarzenegger and I [TS]

00:51:03   think about linda hamilton and then I [TS]

00:51:05   know Michael Biehn is the other person [TS]

00:51:07   in this movie and I try to picture him I [TS]

00:51:09   try to think about his character [TS]

00:51:11   I can't he just doesn't register for me [TS]

00:51:14   he is just a blank and maybe that's good [TS]

00:51:17   in that you know John Connor is the [TS]

00:51:19   leader in the future and if his his dad [TS]

00:51:22   was this super charismatic guy who's [TS]

00:51:24   just you know who you know the the [TS]

00:51:27   mother made this intelligent indelible [TS]

00:51:30   impression on her and now he's the super [TS]

00:51:32   charismatic charismatic guy who's [TS]

00:51:34   working for John Connor and it's gonna [TS]

00:51:35   get set back in time maybe it doesn't [TS]

00:51:37   work maybe he does need to just be a [TS]

00:51:39   foot soldier and kind of anonymous but [TS]

00:51:41   as a movie it always struck me how the [TS]

00:51:44   other two main characters in this our [TS]

00:51:47   are immediately come to mind and even [TS]

00:51:49   like Lance Henriksen and paul winfield [TS]

00:51:52   are more I don't notable for me than him [TS]

00:51:56   he just doesn't I don't know there's [TS]

00:51:58   something about him he just doesn't [TS]

00:52:00   register for me and I think it it works [TS]

00:52:02   for me [TS]

00:52:03   exactly because of that because the [TS]

00:52:05   footsoldier thing that he's yeah yes [TS]

00:52:07   someone who should be forgotten [TS]

00:52:10   I mean not that he should be forgotten [TS]

00:52:11   but it doesn't make sense if he is this [TS]

00:52:14   you know it's like oh well he made this [TS]

00:52:15   huge sacrifice no he's just a guy and it [TS]

00:52:19   would overshadow Sarah and would [TS]

00:52:21   overshadow John buddy i'm with you guys [TS]

00:52:25   we're kind of in the rest of the movie I [TS]

00:52:27   wanted maybe a little bit more and I [TS]

00:52:31   think his most painful line read is [TS]

00:52:33   probably the message he brings back from [TS]

00:52:35   John Connor the whole the whole [TS]

00:52:37   soliloquy where it goes into you must [TS]

00:52:39   live so that I can be [TS]

00:52:41   just it doesn't play at all and and part [TS]

00:52:44   of that's not at all i think that light [TS]

00:52:45   actually frankly that whole sequence [TS]

00:52:47   should probably have been scrapped [TS]

00:52:48   because it makes John seemed like a [TS]

00:52:50   dweeb to em but it's also yeah maybe [TS]

00:52:54   there's no proper way to perform that [TS]

00:52:56   line is clunky as it is [TS]

00:52:58   uh-oh he's a michael biehn is also the [TS]

00:53:01   really the antagonist in James Cameron's [TS]

00:53:04   movie the abyss which I love a whole lot [TS]

00:53:07   and I I find him not particularly [TS]

00:53:09   interesting in that movie either so and [TS]

00:53:12   he's actually not tremendously [TS]

00:53:14   interesting in aliens either should [TS]

00:53:16   point to pick and yet I like him in all [TS]

00:53:19   three of those movies there's something [TS]

00:53:20   here is Matt yeah even as he even as [TS]

00:53:23   he's not a terrific actor I think [TS]

00:53:24   there's something just in his life [TS]

00:53:26   interesting [TS]

00:53:28   it's like it's like some sort of weird [TS]

00:53:29   reverse hidden charisma [TS]

00:53:31   I don't understand just like an old that [TS]

00:53:34   only that only some of us can see maybe [TS]

00:53:37   it's pity I don't know [TS]

00:53:39   ok anyway I that's my that was that was [TS]

00:53:42   something that struck me again in an [TS]

00:53:44   hour watching that weekend we then get [TS]

00:53:45   things we talked about which is there's [TS]

00:53:47   more more Terminator POV with random [TS]

00:53:49   code we did skip over what is probably [TS]

00:53:52   my favorite line in the movie [TS]

00:53:53   oh yeah okay as Arnold is looking [TS]

00:53:55   through Sarah's little phone book and [TS]

00:53:57   finding mom's cabin phone number and [TS]

00:53:59   beginning to rot as we see his face is [TS]

00:54:01   starting to come apart and analyzer are [TS]

00:54:03   clinging to him and that the custodian [TS]

00:54:05   wanders by and catches a whiff of him [TS]

00:54:07   and says hey buddy you got a dead cat in [TS]

00:54:08   there or what [TS]

00:54:09   and that's where we see the POV shot of [TS]

00:54:11   it trying to select an appropriate [TS]

00:54:12   response to open it finally comes upon [TS]

00:54:14   fuck you asshole yeah yeah just it which [TS]

00:54:18   is wonderful it's nice to have some [TS]

00:54:21   lightness in the middle of everything [TS]

00:54:22   many options there are various degrees [TS]

00:54:26   which is funny and he chose just the [TS]

00:54:28   right one he picked a winner the [TS]

00:54:29   delivery is not so great [TS]

00:54:30   yeah but the line is good well he's a [TS]

00:54:32   he's a cyborg from the future he doesn't [TS]

00:54:35   know what it means he's just you know [TS]

00:54:36   picking something out right well yet [TS]

00:54:38   comes back to he doesn't have to carry [TS]

00:54:40   on the the masquerade for very long [TS]

00:54:42   usually so the voice module wasn't [TS]

00:54:44   something they have to spend a whole lot [TS]

00:54:46   of time on in fact one one wonders why [TS]

00:54:48   they even bothered [TS]

00:54:49   yeah and he's not used to the colorful [TS]

00:54:51   metaphors of the past ah yes double the [TS]

00:54:54   mass on you and so forth [TS]

00:54:55   that is already a colorful an hour of [TS]

00:55:00   the past this is this is where I have [TS]

00:55:04   the m-my at action simple streets quick [TS]

00:55:07   method note it's time it's time for the [TS]

00:55:11   crank up the synth music and have a a [TS]

00:55:14   tot car chase just hit the demo button [TS]

00:55:18   on the chasm [TS]

00:55:23   so so let me tell you I find it a high [TS]

00:55:30   degree of difficulty to try and detonate [TS]

00:55:33   a bomb by looking at the fuse checking [TS]

00:55:38   it out the back of a moving vehicle and [TS]

00:55:40   hoping minute hits a guy on a motorcycle [TS]

00:55:42   dead-on [TS]

00:55:43   well this is why he never comes and he [TS]

00:55:44   never gets close i wrote those are some [TS]

00:55:48   pretty useless pipe bombs at this point [TS]

00:55:50   yeah and and i'm not even sure why he [TS]

00:55:52   bothers because it there doesn't appear [TS]

00:55:53   to be any shrapnel there's just a big [TS]

00:55:55   puff of smoke yeah you have emerged from [TS]

00:55:57   the pipeline he's over to just knock him [TS]

00:55:58   off the bike maybe they'll just get back [TS]

00:56:00   up and get back on my bike I don't know [TS]

00:56:02   it just provides an opportunity for him [TS]

00:56:04   to ride his motorcycle dramatically out [TS]

00:56:05   of the cloud yes that's true which is [TS]

00:56:08   nice so nice [TS]

00:56:09   sure but it's just really an effective [TS]

00:56:10   weapon against the Terminator all those [TS]

00:56:12   later proves to be useful useful twice [TS]

00:56:15   yeah but not not when chuck from the [TS]

00:56:16   backdrop of a truck [TS]

00:56:18   yeah he should have saved them to use a [TS]

00:56:20   new better circumstances later perhaps [TS]

00:56:22   yeah thats i agree a better actor would [TS]

00:56:26   have no so he does something so he does [TS]

00:56:28   end up the Terminator ends up on in the [TS]

00:56:31   gas truck that flipped the the car flips [TS]

00:56:33   over and and he'll he he flies off his [TS]

00:56:38   motorcycle and then he gets in the gas [TS]

00:56:40   truck and this is I really like that [TS]

00:56:42   moment where the exterminator is is a [TS]

00:56:44   hit by the truck that's a funny that's a [TS]

00:56:46   really funny moment that right and then [TS]

00:56:49   he's dragged quite a ways yes no yes [TS]

00:56:51   well and the great part of that is it [TS]

00:56:53   tears off another good chunk of his face [TS]

00:56:55   so we have got great scene where he gets [TS]

00:56:57   into the cab and the guy says let's get [TS]

00:56:59   out of here and it's actually Arnold and [TS]

00:57:00   now we get a good full shot of of more [TS]

00:57:03   of the skeleton being revealed under [TS]

00:57:04   racial that's that's good stuff that's [TS]

00:57:07   the that's really nice [TS]

00:57:08   so I'm sorry sticks a bomb in the gas [TS]

00:57:11   truck and I think this is as they're [TS]

00:57:13   being chased i should point [TS]

00:57:15   yeah and i think this is a funny uh cool [TS]

00:57:18   moment where you see Linda Hamilton [TS]

00:57:19   running and the and the bomb goes off in [TS]

00:57:23   the gas truck does rain fire down [TS]

00:57:25   everywhere it's in the dumpster where [TS]

00:57:28   michael biehn is hiding and he has to [TS]

00:57:29   roll out of the dumpster and stop stop [TS]

00:57:31   drop and roll to extinguish the flames [TS]

00:57:35   I think I thought that was really it's [TS]

00:57:36   it's very clearly [TS]

00:57:37   rear projection but I thought that was a [TS]

00:57:40   really cool cool little bit where the [TS]

00:57:43   with a gas truck [TS]

00:57:44   I mean if you're gonna put a pipe bomb [TS]

00:57:45   in a giant truck full of gasoline it [TS]

00:57:49   better blow up good and it does it does [TS]

00:57:51   that's a nice explosion and you're right [TS]

00:57:53   you don't usually get that sort of [TS]

00:57:54   attention to detail where the dumpster [TS]

00:57:55   is also in flames [TS]

00:57:57   yeah it's like raining down fire [TS]

00:57:58   everywhere and and I like that he could [TS]

00:58:01   he kinda like it the implication there [TS]

00:58:03   is that you know you're in there to hide [TS]

00:58:06   from the explosion and then suddenly [TS]

00:58:07   you're dumpsters on fire and he like I [TS]

00:58:10   gotta get out of here and you'll roll [TS]

00:58:11   out ya gotta get out of here you see the [TS]

00:58:13   Terminator emerged from the cab take a [TS]

00:58:15   couple of steps and collapsed Dead sure [TS]

00:58:18   done [TS]

00:58:19   he's he's done this time for sure [TS]

00:58:21   unfortunately he is not done he rises as [TS]

00:58:27   a ray harryhausen style stop motion [TS]

00:58:30   robots and this is that this is the [TS]

00:58:32   worst part of the film for me now I just [TS]

00:58:33   say I it actually made me sad because [TS]

00:58:36   you know it's bad when it when it's a [TS]

00:58:38   not his whole body it's all that's what [TS]

00:58:40   I'm saying is because they they actually [TS]

00:58:41   have a model that looks like they built [TS]

00:58:43   the Terminator and they have been like [TS]

00:58:44   banging into things for the up close [TS]

00:58:46   shots but when it's when it's him sort [TS]

00:58:48   of limping along with the fire behind [TS]

00:58:50   where we're totally in Sinbad territory [TS]

00:58:52   at that point which is it it's the [TS]

00:58:55   reason it's unfortunate is because i [TS]

00:58:56   think that's really the only part of the [TS]

00:58:59   effects that doesn't hold up at all [TS]

00:59:01   I great they picked me and they try so [TS]

00:59:03   hard to make about like cinematic like [TS]

00:59:06   that the stop-motion robot goes down the [TS]

00:59:08   hallway and a pan down the hallway and [TS]

00:59:10   you can depend you can see that the [TS]

00:59:12   frames are not in sync [TS]

00:59:13   yeah because it's not motion and and [TS]

00:59:16   it's not even that scene where they're [TS]

00:59:17   looking through the doorway as he's [TS]

00:59:19   coming towards them and you can almost i [TS]

00:59:20   think in a couple of scenes it almost [TS]

00:59:22   seems like the perspective goes wrong [TS]

00:59:24   yeah like it it looks like those [TS]

00:59:26   terrible scenes where like they open a [TS]

00:59:28   door in like a kid's show and there's [TS]

00:59:30   like a Western going on outside the tour [TS]

00:59:32   I don't know what the alternative would [TS]

00:59:33   be whether it would have been like [TS]

00:59:34   almost like a puppet kind of thing where [TS]

00:59:36   they have it moving or just added a [TS]

00:59:39   little more artfully but they seemed [TS]

00:59:41   really really proud of their Ray [TS]

00:59:42   Harryhausen style stop-motion robot [TS]

00:59:45   well when i watch this in 1984 that [TS]

00:59:47   didn't stick out that [TS]

00:59:48   I don't remember there being anything [TS]

00:59:50   that that was ridiculous looking it [TS]

00:59:53   except maybe the the self-surgery scene [TS]

00:59:55   where it was pretty obvious that it was [TS]

00:59:57   a prosthetic face that they are working [TS]

00:59:59   on be sure [TS]

00:59:59   on be sure [TS]

01:00:00   but but i don't remember anything in [TS]

01:00:02   this whole sequence of the skeleton [TS]

01:00:04   chasing after them where where there was [TS]

01:00:06   anything that I thought looked [TS]

01:00:07   ridiculous and sadly now it does and in [TS]

01:00:10   fact I can hardly believe I'm saying [TS]

01:00:11   this but I could almost get behind them [TS]

01:00:14   going back and special edition izing [TS]

01:00:16   this film just to fix those sequences [TS]

01:00:18   because the rest of it is still so good [TS]

01:00:20   you know in a way it adds to the charm [TS]

01:00:22   because obviously this is still a [TS]

01:00:24   product of the eighties evidence of that [TS]

01:00:26   is everywhere [TS]

01:00:28   it does it does pull you out of it [TS]

01:00:30   though it does a little bit and I feel [TS]

01:00:31   like if I showed this to the kids we [TS]

01:00:34   watched a clash of the titans not too [TS]

01:00:36   long ago and my daughter really enjoyed [TS]

01:00:38   it but she was laughing at the [TS]

01:00:40   stop-motion pretty much throughout the [TS]

01:00:43   what's great about this is that you know [TS]

01:00:45   Arnold Schwarzenegger is the star of [TS]

01:00:46   this movie but at this point he's gone [TS]

01:00:47   it's just a metal robot that's gonna [TS]

01:00:49   tell Anna I don't love that again it's [TS]

01:00:51   like the robot has been taking damage [TS]

01:00:53   and and that's one of the great things [TS]

01:00:54   about this the the Terminator as a [TS]

01:00:57   villain is that it's taking damage it's [TS]

01:01:00   just not affected by it like we would be [TS]

01:01:02   and so it just keeps on coming and now [TS]

01:01:04   with what when you finally like okay [TS]

01:01:06   it's on fire [TS]

01:01:07   I whole gas truck blew up it's gone it's [TS]

01:01:09   like no now it's just a shiny metal [TS]

01:01:11   robot that's gonna kill you [TS]

01:01:13   it's great to really finally get that [TS]

01:01:14   that confirmation that yeah it's been a [TS]

01:01:16   robot along there there are no traces of [TS]

01:01:18   humanity left it all at that point I [TS]

01:01:20   think that really drives the point home [TS]

01:01:21   in that moment the red-eyes is the [TS]

01:01:23   connection to where you you see hit [TS]

01:01:25   Schwarzenegger with the one red eye so [TS]

01:01:27   that when you see the red eyes and the [TS]

01:01:28   Terminator love letter later you know [TS]

01:01:30   you know it's the same and you've just [TS]

01:01:32   been peeling off the layers as we go [TS]

01:01:34   plus the design for that skeleton is [TS]

01:01:36   incredibly good it is so intimidating [TS]

01:01:39   working and it's so shiny and and [TS]

01:01:41   marvelous looking and the fact that it's [TS]

01:01:44   it still has a limp from from the crash [TS]

01:01:46   is nice too because it maintains almost [TS]

01:01:49   at human feature but it's it's clearly [TS]

01:01:51   not this point down its damage but it's [TS]

01:01:53   still coming for them so they run into a [TS]

01:01:55   factory that's that's full of autumn [TS]

01:01:58   machinery odds other robots that are [TS]

01:02:02   then ironically turn it on and and at [TS]

01:02:04   this moment Lauren Lauren I said it's [TS]

01:02:07   robots and lauren said hey buddies [TS]

01:02:10   it's Terminator your buddies it's your [TS]

01:02:14   guys 10 it's your robots our ancestors [TS]

01:02:18   yeah that was pretty funny almost [TS]

01:02:20   expected to go down on his knees [TS]

01:02:22   that's right i paid tribute to the [TS]

01:02:25   ancestors does something like that great [TS]

01:02:29   bottling machine giving you always do [TS]

01:02:31   that's right hydraulic press how do you [TS]

01:02:33   do it how do you stay looking so young I [TS]

01:02:38   do a lot of push-ups and crunches so now [TS]

01:02:41   we have a chase Erica here we go again [TS]

01:02:43   now we have a chasing in a in a factory [TS]

01:02:45   and is conveniently located factory I [TS]

01:02:47   with honestly at this point yes it was [TS]

01:02:49   yet another chase but I I was more [TS]

01:02:52   interested by this because it wasn't [TS]

01:02:53   another car chase those people this is a [TS]

01:02:56   horror movie and yeah it's very much a [TS]

01:02:58   horror movie chase and it's in a much it [TS]

01:03:00   more interesting terrain it's [TS]

01:03:02   two-dimensional they have they're going [TS]

01:03:04   up and down stairs and there's stuff [TS]

01:03:06   happening all around them you know [TS]

01:03:08   machinery and stuff so i was i was much [TS]

01:03:10   more engaged by this then I was any of [TS]

01:03:13   the car chases in the film [TS]

01:03:14   yeah i was personally agree with this [TS]

01:03:16   yeah and this is that that horror movie [TS]

01:03:18   thing and that the bombs come in handy [TS]

01:03:20   here [TS]

01:03:21   yeah this is the point where you realize [TS]

01:03:22   they've actually been through a lot [TS]

01:03:23   because we get a shot of Sarah running [TS]

01:03:25   and her jeans have come on tuck from her [TS]

01:03:27   socks at this point so you know it's [TS]

01:03:29   gotten that that's seriously it's pretty [TS]

01:03:32   serious her giant legwarmer ask socks [TS]

01:03:35   and reeses pants have some stains on [TS]

01:03:37   them [TS]

01:03:37   oh no that's probably where they were [TS]

01:03:38   there for you know that's a feature [TS]

01:03:40   estate these two future future style as [TS]

01:03:44   he calls it features style that's right [TS]

01:03:46   this reminds me of home i'm going to [TS]

01:03:48   continue to wear these so he sticks a [TS]

01:03:50   bomb and the Terminator he's gonna blow [TS]

01:03:51   the Terminator up and the Terminator is [TS]

01:03:54   exploded and it is dead [TS]

01:03:56   goodnight everybody yeah baby and sadly [TS]

01:03:59   sarah has taken a big piece of [TS]

01:04:01   Terminator in the leg and and is kyle is [TS]

01:04:08   no more her leg seems to be sort of [TS]

01:04:09   broken so she can't stand and kyle is a [TS]

01:04:13   goner [TS]

01:04:13   his eyes are open dead r.i.p old [TS]

01:04:18   what's-his-name but wait it's not over [TS]

01:04:19   but the Terminator the top [TS]

01:04:23   half of the Terminator survives yes and [TS]

01:04:26   and we get the low-speed chase it so [TS]

01:04:28   it's this i really do I i love this that [TS]

01:04:31   she's crawling and it's crawling yes [TS]

01:04:34   known as as false endings go [TS]

01:04:36   even now the bit where the torso comes [TS]

01:04:38   back to life i think still works quite [TS]

01:04:40   well [TS]

01:04:41   oh yeah because we've already done the [TS]

01:04:42   one false ending and you're not really [TS]

01:04:43   expecting another and yet it's earned [TS]

01:04:46   because this thing won't stop right so [TS]

01:04:47   it doesn't you don't roll your eyes like [TS]

01:04:49   oh yeah right it's like now of course [TS]

01:04:50   it's actually I should say both back in [TS]

01:04:52   the day both false endings worked pretty [TS]

01:04:54   well because they did it they do a good [TS]

01:04:55   job with the first one they have the [TS]

01:04:57   nice woodwind theme that kicks in is [TS]

01:04:59   Sarah reunites with recent a hug and you [TS]

01:05:02   know it's this is clearly the end of the [TS]

01:05:04   movie and then it rises from the rubble [TS]

01:05:05   so that works pretty well and then again [TS]

01:05:08   you know the torso comes back to life [TS]

01:05:10   and at this point Reese is dead so it's [TS]

01:05:12   entirely up to Sarah to polish the thing [TS]

01:05:14   off and it's I it to eat that part still [TS]

01:05:17   maybe not the first one but the second [TS]

01:05:19   one still works pretty well on me even [TS]

01:05:20   as I was kind of picking out all the [TS]

01:05:22   things that don't work anymore in this [TS]

01:05:24   film this is a this is a really fun [TS]

01:05:26   chase it's very slow it's very painful [TS]

01:05:28   that with its kind of what makes it good [TS]

01:05:30   she's trying to get away yeah there's [TS]

01:05:32   the you know the little Terminator hand [TS]

01:05:34   keeps catching her foot she keeps [TS]

01:05:36   pulling a foot away so it's like I [TS]

01:05:37   almost got you always got you again [TS]

01:05:39   there's a bit too that's almost [TS]

01:05:41   unintentionally funny where she ends up [TS]

01:05:43   on a conveyor belt [TS]

01:05:44   oh yeah and and she's sort of rolling [TS]

01:05:47   along dragging herself and behind her [TS]

01:05:49   the Terminator torso is just ridin yeah [TS]

01:05:52   he's not pulling himself along or [TS]

01:05:53   anything and he almost has it he has [TS]

01:05:55   that sort of scholars grin on his face [TS]

01:05:57   it's almost like he's enjoying it i [TS]

01:06:01   might get too i love how it's so slow [TS]

01:06:03   except for the conveyor about which is I [TS]

01:06:04   i like to be very about it because I [TS]

01:06:06   just I felt like she deserved that to [TS]

01:06:10   have like to be able to get a little bit [TS]

01:06:11   farther without having to do quite so [TS]

01:06:13   much work even though of course she's [TS]

01:06:15   still trying to pull yourself along but [TS]

01:06:16   it's just it's torturously slow and [TS]

01:06:19   it-it-it ratchet up the tension for me [TS]

01:06:21   because I I just feel like in in that [TS]

01:06:24   circumstance I mean I've had a lot of [TS]

01:06:26   Dreams where like you know i'm i'm [TS]

01:06:27   trying to run but I can't move very fast [TS]

01:06:29   like you just being stuck in in [TS]

01:06:31   slow-motion and and I feel like that's [TS]

01:06:33   exactly what she is but she's stabbed in [TS]

01:06:35   the leg so that that [TS]

01:06:36   added terror of you know you're trying [TS]

01:06:39   to get away but you you can't even [TS]

01:06:40   function as well as you normally could [TS]

01:06:42   it's just that that's much more fun than [TS]

01:06:44   cartoons and I just that wonderfully [TS]

01:06:45   disturbing moment where she crawls for [TS]

01:06:48   the drill press and it's about two feet [TS]

01:06:49   of space that she's got two were [TS]

01:06:52   awestruck logically overall through and [TS]

01:06:54   plus it's depressed so it was good yeah [TS]

01:06:56   its sheer and it's flat and she has [TS]

01:06:58   nothing to grab it grab onto with her [TS]

01:06:59   hands and she tries to press a button [TS]

01:07:01   and it will squish you [TS]

01:07:03   that's it too yep we've already seen it [TS]

01:07:05   has a hair trigger so she gets through [TS]

01:07:07   it and turn radius following her and she [TS]

01:07:09   presses the button and push the button [TS]

01:07:12   and squish now first first she says [TS]

01:07:15   you're communicating artery which is a [TS]

01:07:17   great and then present invention presses [TS]

01:07:19   the button after a lot I mean that [TS]

01:07:20   that's a quick bit of crazy like [TS]

01:07:22   crescendo quick cuts right where it's [TS]

01:07:24   like it's coming she's sitting there [TS]

01:07:25   it's coming she's looking at it you know [TS]

01:07:27   if she's settled back and she's got her [TS]

01:07:29   arm you know reaching over for the [TS]

01:07:30   button and it all happened so fast and [TS]

01:07:33   then she's got her line and press the [TS]

01:07:36   button and then it it gets quashed and [TS]

01:07:39   it's on its hands on her at that point [TS]

01:07:41   it's going on our shoulder and it stays [TS]

01:07:43   there as she passed yes i think that [TS]

01:07:46   that is the moment for me where it all [TS]

01:07:48   comes together my favorite part about [TS]

01:07:49   this film is watching her go from you [TS]

01:07:52   know that the girl who doesn't need to [TS]

01:07:54   wear a helmet the beginning because her [TS]

01:07:56   hair is just that good with you [TS]

01:07:58   her hair is managed to be fish yes [TS]

01:08:00   exactly so she's a bit and then at the [TS]

01:08:03   end she's she's gotten through all of [TS]

01:08:05   this she's progressed and she's to the [TS]

01:08:07   point where she's she's quitting the [TS]

01:08:09   first before she's taking out the bad [TS]

01:08:11   guy like that that is a full arc i am [TS]

01:08:13   pleased with it if that's that's why i [TS]

01:08:16   like this movie she's crossed over she's [TS]

01:08:17   quitting [TS]

01:08:18   mm yep it's an it's an important you [TS]

01:08:21   know moment in in every action hero's [TS]

01:08:24   life to reach that quick days it's like [TS]

01:08:27   puberty your first clip [TS]

01:08:29   yep yep so at that point uh we are in [TS]

01:08:32   Mexico [TS]

01:08:33   yes and I find myself wondering was [TS]

01:08:35   anybody at all concerned about the bits [TS]

01:08:37   of homicidal futuristic robot that they [TS]

01:08:39   found in that bottling plant along with [TS]

01:08:41   the dead guy in the unconscious girl [TS]

01:08:42   well so you know in Terminator to one of [TS]

01:08:44   the really nice reveals of Terminator 2 [TS]

01:08:46   is that beautiful man [TS]

01:08:48   little hand that we we don't even think [TS]

01:08:51   of that much after she crushes the body [TS]

01:08:54   but it turns out to be in true time [TS]

01:08:56   paradox fashion the technology that is [TS]

01:08:58   taken and leads to the creation of [TS]

01:09:01   Skynet through the analysis of the [TS]

01:09:03   advanced Terminator technology while [TS]

01:09:05   watching this time I i did think you [TS]

01:09:08   know [TS]

01:09:09   also they have the whole crushed killer [TS]

01:09:11   robot you know it's right and but but [TS]

01:09:14   the second movie tries to explain this [TS]

01:09:16   and say that you know somehow the [TS]

01:09:17   scientists were called in by the [TS]

01:09:19   government or whatever it when they [TS]

01:09:21   found this thing to investigate it so [TS]

01:09:23   but if this movie is just like and she [TS]

01:09:26   crushed the robot goodbye the end in the [TS]

01:09:28   deleted scenes there's actually a [TS]

01:09:30   sequence that I assume was the alternate [TS]

01:09:31   ending where its people that work at the [TS]

01:09:34   factory or the manager of the factory [TS]

01:09:36   and they find a microchip and they say [TS]

01:09:39   is this anything you've seen before any [TS]

01:09:41   more advanced than we have and then [TS]

01:09:43   there's this really cheesy sort of back [TS]

01:09:45   out of the building and we see that it's [TS]

01:09:47   cyberdyne systems they were chasing each [TS]

01:09:49   other around in all along [TS]

01:09:51   instead we get that pay off in the [TS]

01:09:52   second movie which is fun yeah I think [TS]

01:09:54   that's a time paradox too far and glad [TS]

01:09:57   they can add because that [TS]

01:09:58   yeah the John Connor father thing that [TS]

01:10:00   that you can make logical sense of that [TS]

01:10:03   if you work hard enough but the the [TS]

01:10:05   technology that nobody built that just [TS]

01:10:09   appeared from the future and nobody got [TS]

01:10:11   around actually creating it is strapped [TS]

01:10:14   down [TS]

01:10:15   that's good that's good stuff so Sarah [TS]

01:10:18   get some gas in Mexico and the the nice [TS]

01:10:20   nice old man who runs the gas station [TS]

01:10:22   lets her look up words in Spanish when [TS]

01:10:25   he clearly speaks English just fine and [TS]

01:10:29   little boy comes and takes her picture [TS]

01:10:31   which is the picture which is totally [TS]

01:10:34   not a Polaroid after she takes yes [TS]

01:10:36   totally wrong margin around the image of [TS]

01:10:40   the Hollywood but that's the you note [TS]

01:10:43   that this is the picture and she's she [TS]

01:10:46   sad because of what's just happened in [TS]

01:10:48   rhesus died but she escaped and then [TS]

01:10:51   honestly the line that makes my eyes [TS]

01:10:54   roll is there's a storm coming [TS]

01:10:57   agreed I know I don't get it [TS]

01:10:59   double-clicking on it [TS]

01:11:01   it it's not even good symbolism so just [TS]

01:11:04   the apocalypse [TS]

01:11:06   that's the storm yeah I guess yeah I i [TS]

01:11:10   would have been fine with ya 11 layer [TS]

01:11:13   back would have been fine right like be [TS]

01:11:15   careful miss there's you know it's a bet [TS]

01:11:17   there's a bad storm coming and she and [TS]

01:11:19   she said something like I'll be ready or [TS]

01:11:21   I'm not worried or something like that [TS]

01:11:23   would be okay but instead to have her be [TS]

01:11:25   like there's a storm coming [TS]

01:11:27   yeah okay it's not raining i'm afraid of [TS]

01:11:30   its robots robots and robot rain that's [TS]

01:11:34   right it's Iranian robots hallelujah [TS]

01:11:37   acknowledgments the works parlan else [TS]

01:11:41   oh I have that is my last note 2 and [TS]

01:11:43   pursue I was gonna use that as my exit [TS]

01:11:46   quote this would be a good time to [TS]

01:11:50   acknowledge the works of Harlan Ellison [TS]

01:11:52   in the creation of this podcast by the [TS]

01:11:53   way well yeah yeah David you want to do [TS]

01:11:55   you need you know the story or so [TS]

01:11:56   there's two episodes of two episodes of [TS]

01:11:59   the outer limits that Mike I don't know [TS]

01:12:02   if we know the facts here I always [TS]

01:12:03   assumed that James Cameron saw them when [TS]

01:12:05   he was young and integrated them into [TS]

01:12:08   his sort of like worldview of wow that [TS]

01:12:10   was a cool story and then came up with [TS]

01:12:12   this story and thought this is a cool [TS]

01:12:13   story and just didn't even connect the [TS]

01:12:15   dots the fact that he had seen it but [TS]

01:12:17   it's very clearly this movie I so so I'd [TS]

01:12:20   like to believe they didn't like just [TS]

01:12:22   take those episodes rip them off but it [TS]

01:12:23   was more like they forgot that that's [TS]

01:12:25   where they got the idea that right when [TS]

01:12:27   they were a kid and they watch those [TS]

01:12:28   episodes right and and it's very clearly [TS]

01:12:30   i mean the eye as i recall the lawsuit [TS]

01:12:34   was about the episode soldier but it [TS]

01:12:37   really i mean this really is a blend of [TS]

01:12:39   that and demon with a glass and yes [TS]

01:12:41   which which are the two episodes and [TS]

01:12:43   they're really good episodes by the way [TS]

01:12:46   demon with a glass and is just fantastic [TS]

01:12:50   and they're apparently making it into a [TS]

01:12:51   big-budget movie now officially haha and [TS]

01:12:57   yeah but yeah I mean apparently he had [TS]

01:13:02   said at the time yeah i used to watch [TS]

01:13:04   the outer limits and you know it was a [TS]

01:13:06   big influence on me and and that's [TS]

01:13:08   apparently what they seized on and when [TS]

01:13:11   hot now you have to put a disclaimer at [TS]

01:13:13   the end [TS]

01:13:13   yeah and give him an acknowledgement and [TS]

01:13:15   give him money and there's a gag order [TS]

01:13:17   which he completely ignored it seems [TS]

01:13:21   cameron came out and said Harlan Ellison [TS]

01:13:23   is a parasite who can kiss my ass [TS]

01:13:26   he's the strange sort of parasite that [TS]

01:13:28   gives you something to do a toast [TS]

01:13:31   apparently which it simply is not a [TS]

01:13:33   parasite as it turns out and and a [TS]

01:13:36   better writer [TS]

01:13:37   yeah well yeah but anyway yeah you know [TS]

01:13:40   I don't really like a lot of james [TS]

01:13:41   cameron's work but you know you cannot [TS]

01:13:43   go more than about 10 minutes and James [TS]

01:13:45   Cameron movie without having some [TS]

01:13:47   dialogue that makes you cry on the [TS]

01:13:49   getaway date like this i love the abyss [TS]

01:13:51   they're stuck there are some dialogue in [TS]

01:13:53   the abyss that is so terrible but you [TS]

01:13:55   know I still love that movie so it's a [TS]

01:13:58   camera think so [TS]

01:13:59   so anyway Harlan Ellison you know gets [TS]

01:14:01   acknowledged now on all copies of [TS]

01:14:03   Terminator for the rest of time [TS]

01:14:05   yeah because really I think through [TS]

01:14:09   osmosis basically they were inspired by [TS]

01:14:13   you know they probably thought like hey [TS]

01:14:16   there's a cool story my friends and I [TS]

01:14:17   talked about when we were kids and it [TS]

01:14:18   turns out well it was this episode of [TS]

01:14:20   that outer limits you didn't invent it [TS]

01:14:21   so oh well oh well oh well but we got [TS]

01:14:26   the Terminator out of it so thanks [TS]

01:14:27   Harlan Ellison yeah yeah good job York [TS]

01:14:31   imagine the old bastard yeah i just [TS]

01:14:33   think about it like you know songwriting [TS]

01:14:35   there's there are you know if you [TS]

01:14:36   listened to enough music that there's no [TS]

01:14:38   such thing as a completely new song [TS]

01:14:40   they're going to be chord progressions [TS]

01:14:41   that are going to be similar and you're [TS]

01:14:42   gonna be able to point to several of [TS]

01:14:43   them so it's this just kind of plays out [TS]

01:14:46   in that way for me anything else about [TS]

01:14:48   the Terminator before we wrap it up [TS]

01:14:51   I still like it i still like it too yeah [TS]

01:14:54   you too very eighties me three [TS]

01:14:58   yeah i love this movie I have to have [TS]

01:14:59   like i said i wish it was a little but I [TS]

01:15:02   yeah exactly a little less car chasey [TS]

01:15:04   but but that's really my only big [TS]

01:15:07   complaint i honestly don't mind that the [TS]

01:15:09   special effects don't hold up completely [TS]

01:15:12   all the way through and it's it's very [TS]

01:15:13   dated an eighties I like that sort of [TS]

01:15:15   thing I me being a doctor who fan I like [TS]

01:15:17   looking at things as sort of you know [TS]

01:15:19   just archaeological sort of it's like a [TS]

01:15:23   dig back into the past [TS]

01:15:24   this is this is what it looked like in [TS]

01:15:25   the nineteen eighties and it always will [TS]

01:15:27   and I appreciate that the reason that [TS]

01:15:29   that stop-motion hurts just because the [TS]

01:15:31   rest of it looks so good [TS]

01:15:33   yeah much better than it doesn't invite [TS]

01:15:34   you to that model budget film from 1984 [TS]

01:15:37   that robot the robot cyborgs skeleton [TS]

01:15:40   thing when it's the practical effect in [TS]

01:15:43   that in those scenes is so good that is [TS]

01:15:46   contrasts with the stop motion which is [TS]

01:15:49   all janky too bad because it's really [TS]

01:15:53   that first a low-budget movie that is a [TS]

01:15:55   great piece of industrial design at [TS]

01:15:57   which they have used again and again now [TS]

01:16:00   ok wanted and it's kind of amazing now [TS]

01:16:03   watching it after having seen you know [TS]

01:16:06   how many years of mystery science [TS]

01:16:07   theater and all these modern eighties [TS]

01:16:09   movies that obviously it influenced them [TS]

01:16:13   and they were working with even less of [TS]

01:16:14   a budget maybe and you know it's it's [TS]

01:16:17   sort of like this this is so close to [TS]

01:16:19   the edge of not being good but somehow [TS]

01:16:22   it is good compared to all of those [TS]

01:16:24   other you know I'm a warrior of the lost [TS]

01:16:26   world and haley in LA and you know [TS]

01:16:28   that's what the trailer makes it out to [TS]

01:16:31   be is is yes something that should roll [TS]

01:16:34   on mst3k years later [TS]

01:16:36   yeah so it's amazing the movie is as [TS]

01:16:38   good as it was if I had ever seen the [TS]

01:16:40   trailer i probably would have not seen [TS]

01:16:41   many years later seeing it now I just [TS]

01:16:45   shake my head and laughs I can't have [TS]

01:16:47   anybody actually bought a ticket there [TS]

01:16:48   are times when being in a slow movie [TS]

01:16:50   period is actually a baboon and I think [TS]

01:16:52   this probably was one of them i think so [TS]

01:16:54   alright well we have come to the end we [TS]

01:16:57   are we are terminated and 0 therefore I [TS]

01:17:00   would like to say goodbye to my guest [TS]

01:17:02   David lord thank you for being here [TS]

01:17:04   thank you and and I will be back [TS]

01:17:06   good as they say well well pronounced [TS]

01:17:09   Erica and sign thank you for being here [TS]

01:17:11   you know the few hours that we had [TS]

01:17:13   together we podcasting a lifetime's oh [TS]

01:17:15   boy [TS]

01:17:16   beautiful its to end Steve lots of come [TS]
