The Incomparable

211: These Are All Good Ideas

00:00:00   the incomparable number 212 September [TS]

00:00:11   welcome back everybody to the [TS]

00:00:12   comfortable i'm your host Jason smell [TS]

00:00:14   and we're joined here today for a little [TS]

00:00:16   bit different kind of episode we're [TS]

00:00:17   gonna be talking about [TS]

00:00:19   it's not a draft i know that's shocking [TS]

00:00:21   to many of you it's instead what we've [TS]

00:00:24   been calling the TV reboot pitch session [TS]

00:00:26   where we will [TS]

00:00:28   my-my associated panelist will and I [TS]

00:00:30   will be pitching TV shows that we think [TS]

00:00:35   should come back and how they should [TS]

00:00:36   come back so let me introduce my fine [TS]

00:00:38   guests to you tonight who will be [TS]

00:00:40   pitching to our imaginary TV network [TS]

00:00:43   that has access to all old intellectual [TS]

00:00:46   property [TS]

00:00:47   David lower hi hello there are you [TS]

00:00:51   prepared [TS]

00:00:51   I i am prepared i have notes oh god okay [TS]

00:00:56   voice is too jaan is out there high [TS]

00:00:59   moisture is hi Jason are you prepared [TS]

00:01:03   I hope for I hope you're ready for a lot [TS]

00:01:05   of things involving mustaches [TS]

00:01:07   I'm always ready for some things [TS]

00:01:10   involving mustaches Indian eiko is also [TS]

00:01:15   out there Andy are you prepared to [TS]

00:01:16   reboot something I i'm prepared i will [TS]

00:01:20   say that I'm probably not as prepared as [TS]

00:01:21   what I now think the rest of you are but [TS]

00:01:24   this is going to be a hollywood-style [TS]

00:01:25   pitch where we have a long-standing [TS]

00:01:27   relationship with my production company [TS]

00:01:29   we're all casual right here and we can [TS]

00:01:31   just sort of work things out [TS]

00:01:32   also joining us is mr. Philip Michaels [TS]

00:01:34   hello are you put on now yes i'm [TS]

00:01:36   prepared i have i have as many as two [TS]

00:01:38   browser tabs open that's research you [TS]

00:01:43   putting David Lord shame they're all [TS]

00:01:46   right well we should get started this is [TS]

00:01:47   again it is not a draft i know and that [TS]

00:01:52   is shocking and I'm expecting that the [TS]

00:01:54   other panelists may want to jump in at [TS]

00:01:56   some point and ask questions and that's [TS]

00:01:58   fine and if they want to do their own [TS]

00:02:00   alternate pitch go for it but we're [TS]

00:02:03   going to let everybody to their initial [TS]

00:02:04   pitch as if they were in the room with [TS]

00:02:06   the fictional TV executives so who is [TS]

00:02:09   nice and go first [TS]

00:02:11   Jason I can i request that Phil get to [TS]

00:02:14   go first because he he said before we [TS]

00:02:16   started that he's prepared backups [TS]

00:02:19   okay justjust I don't think any of us [TS]

00:02:22   want to step on Phil's toes i pass [TS]

00:02:25   courteously uh-oh let's go to David Lord [TS]

00:02:31   okay well you know I was thinking about [TS]

00:02:35   shows that I you know that i wrote a [TS]

00:02:37   spec script for and things that like to [TS]

00:02:39   see again but most of those i just want [TS]

00:02:42   to bring back as is you know I wouldn't [TS]

00:02:44   reboot them so much as just start them I [TS]

00:02:48   thought about you know maybe an hour [TS]

00:02:50   long musical about the ennui that sits [TS]

00:02:52   in with a long-running Broadway show and [TS]

00:02:54   call it after smash but no well there [TS]

00:02:58   goes my idea thanks [TS]

00:03:00   ya see and no mustaches yet but a couple [TS]

00:03:06   years ago I I got to thinking about this [TS]

00:03:08   this was a show that I had the lunchbox [TS]

00:03:12   when I was in kindergarten because my [TS]

00:03:15   grandparents thought I liked the show [TS]

00:03:17   and I guess I watched it and I came back [TS]

00:03:20   to it many years later I had the action [TS]

00:03:22   figures i had the playset space 1999 and [TS]

00:03:27   the thing is I mean a couple years ago I [TS]

00:03:30   saw that someone was trying to get the [TS]

00:03:31   rights to do it and call it space 2099 [TS]

00:03:34   and it's like it doesn't sound right [TS]

00:03:37   if you're gonna change the name just do [TS]

00:03:38   something original by that point so then [TS]

00:03:41   I thought well how would you do it [TS]

00:03:43   without changing the name so i thought [TS]

00:03:47   well alright what if we have like a you [TS]

00:03:50   know do like Battlestar Galactica do a [TS]

00:03:52   miniseries right if you just get to tell [TS]

00:03:54   the one story and tell the one-story so [TS]

00:03:57   it starts off well i guess i should give [TS]

00:04:00   a little background for the show right [TS]

00:04:03   it's set on the moon in the far future [TS]

00:04:05   year of 1999 the base was run by [TS]

00:04:08   Commander John Kane egg played by martin [TS]

00:04:11   landau and dr. Helena Russell barber [TS]

00:04:14   bein they were sort of a couple i don't [TS]

00:04:17   think they ever explicitly made the [TS]

00:04:19   characters a couple but it was kind of [TS]

00:04:23   implied since they were married in real [TS]

00:04:24   life and basically in the in the first [TS]

00:04:29   episode there's a nuclear explosion that [TS]

00:04:31   might be sabotage [TS]

00:04:32   and the moon is blasted out of the [TS]

00:04:35   Earth's orbit and basically becomes the [TS]

00:04:37   starship enterprise and goes across the [TS]

00:04:39   galaxy and finds new planets and it's [TS]

00:04:41   very exciting [TS]

00:04:42   that's good physics right that's all it [TS]

00:04:44   fit yeah yeah and and everything else [TS]

00:04:47   back on earth is going to be fine and [TS]

00:04:48   you know they'll come back to earth [TS]

00:04:50   someday and they'll find it just in you [TS]

00:04:52   know so so yeah it's you know it's not [TS]

00:04:55   exactly great TV so I thought all right [TS]

00:04:59   well he keep the name and he get rid of [TS]

00:05:01   the the silliness of ripping the earth [TS]

00:05:04   out of its ripping the moon out of the [TS]

00:05:05   Earth's orbit and turning it into a [TS]

00:05:08   spaceship and I thought well alright you [TS]

00:05:10   start where you're at this planet [TS]

00:05:12   it's the year 1999 and they're they're [TS]

00:05:17   building an ark ship that is of moon [TS]

00:05:21   size and shape and it's just out past [TS]

00:05:24   the moon's orbit and you find out that [TS]

00:05:28   well this is a planet that's in trouble [TS]

00:05:30   right the the environment is collapsing [TS]

00:05:32   the upper classes are financing and [TS]

00:05:37   funding this and building this and [TS]

00:05:38   they're planning to escape kind of Atlas [TS]

00:05:40   Shrugged style and as this is going on [TS]

00:05:45   as they're preparing it there's an act [TS]

00:05:47   of sabotage and it blows that out of [TS]

00:05:50   range at the same time it knocks the [TS]

00:05:54   moon out of its orbit and causes a mass [TS]

00:05:57   extinction event on this planet and we [TS]

00:06:00   find out that it's not earth so as it as [TS]

00:06:04   this sort of basically takes that setup [TS]

00:06:06   and you know it still run by Commander [TS]

00:06:08   John Koenig and it travels and travels [TS]

00:06:10   and discovers a planet that looks very [TS]

00:06:13   similar to their planet and its earth [TS]

00:06:16   and the weird thing is on earth it's the [TS]

00:06:20   year 2014 9 there's no space program [TS]

00:06:24   there's no exploration there's no [TS]

00:06:26   anything because they gave up and people [TS]

00:06:31   that are missing from our heroes [TS]

00:06:35   timeline our heroes existence you know [TS]

00:06:38   commander john candy grins the station [TS]

00:06:40   but his Helena wrestle died years before [TS]

00:06:43   on earth there's dr. Helen [TS]

00:06:46   wrestle but the cake the john candy she [TS]

00:06:49   knew died years before so you have this [TS]

00:06:52   sort of underlying mystery of why are [TS]

00:06:54   their parallels why are their timelines [TS]

00:06:57   out of sync [TS]

00:06:58   you know it's 50 years off and so while [TS]

00:07:01   they're sort of getting to know each [TS]

00:07:02   other [TS]

00:07:03   boom another sabotage their blown out of [TS]

00:07:07   the orbit and it effects the moon around [TS]

00:07:11   our earth and as part of the second half [TS]

00:07:14   of the miniseries they have to figure [TS]

00:07:15   out how to basically save the earth and [TS]

00:07:21   themselves and from there it sort of [TS]

00:07:25   goes forward as they you know they have [TS]

00:07:27   a way of propelling this thing through [TS]

00:07:29   space it's not the moon it's an actual [TS]

00:07:33   shape it just happens to be shaped like [TS]

00:07:35   the moon [TS]

00:07:37   you know it's like it's like that but [TS]

00:07:39   but you know you get to do all your [TS]

00:07:40   daughter throw moon that's no moon [TS]

00:07:43   you get to have all your star trek [TS]

00:07:45   strange new world stuff you get to have [TS]

00:07:47   the underlying mysteries of those [TS]

00:07:50   disconnects and parallels and why did [TS]

00:07:52   they happen and what's going on and you [TS]

00:07:55   know maybe you get to the end of the [TS]

00:07:56   first season they discover another earth [TS]

00:07:59   now what's going on I don't know but it [TS]

00:08:03   sort of seemed interesting to me to have [TS]

00:08:04   that as your mystery and to sort of take [TS]

00:08:07   the point of view of this other planet [TS]

00:08:09   as you know that's where we start [TS]

00:08:12   so you can sort of step back and look at [TS]

00:08:14   humanity that way like Roddenberry like [TS]

00:08:16   to do so in in a sense to our heroes the [TS]

00:08:20   the earth manner are the aliens so there [TS]

00:08:24   you go [TS]

00:08:25   it's not an elevator pitch but it's at [TS]

00:08:28   least not the 30 paragraphs i wrote out [TS]

00:08:30   a couple years ago interesting now when [TS]

00:08:32   you told me this pitch in san diego a [TS]

00:08:35   while ago I i suggested my alternate [TS]

00:08:38   version of space 1999 you mind if I [TS]

00:08:40   throw that out there [TS]

00:08:41   well i was going to say that was before [TS]

00:08:43   I had found all the notes because it's [TS]

00:08:45   I've had this for a couple years now so [TS]

00:08:47   that's more worked up than I told you [TS]

00:08:49   back then but i like your solution [TS]

00:08:51   because it's more sciency her science [TS]

00:08:54   fiction endorsement by the lady that's [TS]

00:08:57   the technical to science and space [TS]

00:08:59   1999 meets cosmos yes interesting with [TS]

00:09:05   the animation interesting so my pitches [TS]

00:09:08   that there's a actual astronomical [TS]

00:09:10   phenomenon called the rogue planet where [TS]

00:09:12   the planets that are not tied into solar [TS]

00:09:14   systems and that they are uh you know [TS]

00:09:17   this this rogue planet is is shooting [TS]

00:09:19   along it and he comes through our solar [TS]

00:09:24   system and rips the the moon out of its [TS]

00:09:26   orbit which actually could happen and it [TS]

00:09:28   lays waste to the earth [TS]

00:09:30   so what happens is is the moon is taken [TS]

00:09:32   away in the people on the moon base are [TS]

00:09:33   taken away from the earth and I don't [TS]

00:09:34   know whether they're going to go into [TS]

00:09:35   outer space like deep space or whether [TS]

00:09:37   they're gonna be in a weird orbit around [TS]

00:09:39   our Sun in the end but there's [TS]

00:09:41   opportunity for them to discover what [TS]

00:09:43   else is on the moon discover what [TS]

00:09:45   mysteries are down on the rogue planet [TS]

00:09:47   and then also potentially have survivors [TS]

00:09:48   from Earth who have fled who are trying [TS]

00:09:50   to chase after the moon because the [TS]

00:09:52   earth has been laid waste and they know [TS]

00:09:53   that there's a survivable base on the [TS]

00:09:55   moon and there's a bunch of kind of [TS]

00:09:57   stuff that could go on so that was mine [TS]

00:09:59   then you probably called space 2099 [TS]

00:10:01   because really it's 1999 already [TS]

00:10:03   happened [TS]

00:10:03   yeah means my one challenge was trying [TS]

00:10:07   to keep the name and how do you explain [TS]

00:10:08   that right could pull a galactic in 1980 [TS]

00:10:11   and have people travel back in time from [TS]

00:10:13   the future into the present world of [TS]

00:10:16   1999 well you know can't record isn't [TS]

00:10:19   doing anything right now [TS]

00:10:21   sure [TS]

00:10:23   it's sort of a farscape cross over there [TS]

00:10:26   still be like a dark side of the moon [TS]

00:10:27   that we never get to see and you're sort [TS]

00:10:29   of holding that off for like your end of [TS]

00:10:30   season three like big reveal [TS]

00:10:32   yeah that would work like it turns out [TS]

00:10:35   there were these there's like a huge [TS]

00:10:36   like mall of america like covering the [TS]

00:10:38   entire thing and like people out there [TS]

00:10:40   taco bell's McDonald's or like pants [TS]

00:10:42   stores everywhere [TS]

00:10:43   why did we never bother to check okay [TS]

00:10:45   yeah you know I don't have this mapped [TS]

00:10:47   out like lost that would also hook into [TS]

00:10:49   the plot point of like the people from [TS]

00:10:51   Earth wanted to find it because they're [TS]

00:10:53   probably gonna pass that at some point [TS]

00:10:54   and there may be there might be an [TS]

00:10:56   Orange Julius over there [TS]

00:10:58   ok then have a gap is just an old navy [TS]

00:11:00   store but even like twenty dollar really [TS]

00:11:02   cheap as crap jeans you know [TS]

00:11:04   beggars can't be choosers coming in some [TS]

00:11:06   network higher indian tacos and [TS]

00:11:08   executive because i like your notes [TS]

00:11:09   thank you thank you I i I'm as a [TS]

00:11:13   creative professional I pride myself on [TS]

00:11:15   being that idiot executive will be [TS]

00:11:17   saying okay I mean pixar you're great [TS]

00:11:21   I just need you to walk me through the [TS]

00:11:22   idea that their cars on the planet out [TS]

00:11:25   what did there used to be humans are you [TS]

00:11:27   going to ask about this question or not [TS]

00:11:29   or maybe I'm just not getting so fossil [TS]

00:11:31   fuels exist so this is a world in which [TS]

00:11:33   dinosaurs existed and cars have evolved [TS]

00:11:37   to be the dominant is getting hung up on [TS]

00:11:38   the fact that these people have seats [TS]

00:11:40   and yeah well you know if their seats [TS]

00:11:42   inside these living beings what's [TS]

00:11:44   supposed to sit on those seats what's [TS]

00:11:45   the purpose of the seats great pitch [TS]

00:11:48   only backburner before we go on with [TS]

00:11:49   everything if there are talking cars in [TS]

00:11:51   David's match tonight I'm all for it [TS]

00:11:54   so the thing I like about Andy's notes [TS]

00:11:56   as think of all the opportunities for [TS]

00:11:58   product placement there go the distance [TS]

00:12:01   just like look what battle on five [TS]

00:12:03   different zima the ones you're fine i [TS]

00:12:05   didn't just have to take your star away [TS]

00:12:07   what I have to pick apart Nandi [TS]

00:12:08   suggestion areas that he suggested that [TS]

00:12:10   we that we would find that out in season [TS]

00:12:12   3 and we know for a fact that no TV show [TS]

00:12:14   would be able to resist that for like [TS]

00:12:15   halfway through season one probably [TS]

00:12:17   right that we have you want to be a [TS]

00:12:19   season finale [TS]

00:12:20   yeah cuz cuz we have mid season finales [TS]

00:12:23   now why I don't know how about now [TS]

00:12:28   no I mean I'm just going to mail this [TS]

00:12:29   there are no bad suggestions were all [TS]

00:12:31   here in a better pitch meeting all right [TS]

00:12:32   what if we were make to make it like the [TS]

00:12:34   19th is the future version of them [TS]

00:12:36   that life blimp and it's like coca-cola [TS]

00:12:39   has like has this big floating space [TS]

00:12:41   platform that keeps the logo up there [TS]

00:12:43   and then it that's what gets blasted [TS]

00:12:45   into into into deep space [TS]

00:12:47   ok and they still have a study that's [TS]

00:12:50   also with the lab where they keep [TS]

00:12:51   developing their new coca-cola products [TS]

00:12:53   so when it's like berry burst mellow [TS]

00:12:55   yellow [TS]

00:12:56   they could still be drinking that [TS]

00:12:57   because that's where that product was [TS]

00:12:59   developed and then one of the first [TS]

00:13:01   things they do to test the time portal [TS]

00:13:03   to see that just like in Voyager season [TS]

00:13:04   five where they've freakishly figure out [TS]

00:13:06   a way to send messages back to like the [TS]

00:13:08   the previous time they could you send [TS]

00:13:11   back the formula for berry burst mellow [TS]

00:13:12   yellow and then boom it's on store [TS]

00:13:15   shelves that you just synergy wager [TS]

00:13:17   well you know share a space platform [TS]

00:13:21   with a friend so I I think so anyway i [TS]

00:13:25   like i like your idea i like the kind of [TS]

00:13:27   bizarre like almost like they're [TS]

00:13:28   traveling parallel worlds kind of thing [TS]

00:13:30   it's a spider's kind of thing we're [TS]

00:13:32   going to put that on the whiteboard we [TS]

00:13:33   will come back to later [TS]

00:13:34   yeah but I like red planet it's a little [TS]

00:13:37   like a jack mcdevitt novel or something [TS]

00:13:38   you got the mystery of this alien planet [TS]

00:13:39   that was hurled through space from [TS]

00:13:41   somewhere else what might what secrets [TS]

00:13:42   might have perhaps there's more to [TS]

00:13:44   what's down on that planet than we even [TS]

00:13:45   know strange things happen and then [TS]

00:13:47   there's the refugees from Earth and in [TS]

00:13:48   fact may not in fact like a I I was [TS]

00:13:51   measuring like a win worlds collide [TS]

00:13:53   thing where they're coming off the [TS]

00:13:54   surface of the planet before the end [TS]

00:13:56   because they think they're going to be [TS]

00:13:57   destroyed but who's to say if it's in a [TS]

00:13:58   we know weird orbit but they're still [TS]

00:14:00   orbiting the Sun who's to say that we [TS]

00:14:02   don't make contact and it turns out that [TS]

00:14:04   the what happened on earth is actually [TS]

00:14:06   not what they expected so I think you [TS]

00:14:07   feel greater lots of wacky twist that [TS]

00:14:09   you could do in the moon base without it [TS]

00:14:11   completely violating the laws of physics [TS]

00:14:12   like the original one like i said in san [TS]

00:14:16   diego [TS]

00:14:17   I'd almost do your version as its own [TS]

00:14:19   show because that's a really good idea [TS]

00:14:22   or space [TS]

00:14:23   yeah 2015 I'm smelling third season [TS]

00:14:27   spin-off I don't know about the rest of [TS]

00:14:29   you guys but it sounds like gold to me [TS]

00:14:31   while you went to the UN to the guy the [TS]

00:14:34   the pitch guy voice the old formula [TS]

00:14:35   we're going to do this hold out episode [TS]

00:14:37   like I'm not David what I like about [TS]

00:14:39   your idea is that it's fresh i mean it's [TS]

00:14:41   a reboot of an old show and if we're not [TS]

00:14:42   fresh but yet it feels fresh even though [TS]

00:14:44   we're not [TS]

00:14:45   yeah Jason I see what you're saying i'm [TS]

00:14:47   going to restate exactly what you said [TS]

00:14:49   could sound like like I said sometimes I [TS]

00:14:50   was very good to me i think that's a [TS]

00:14:52   good idea is better in an invoice on a [TS]

00:14:54   podcast [TS]

00:14:55   well we we've had our meeting studio [TS]

00:14:57   executive Peter Parker's colombo I i'm [TS]

00:15:01   showering body but I just broadcasting [TS]

00:15:03   network is our mixture and I cool let me [TS]

00:15:06   just make sure you do we have to do we [TS]

00:15:08   have hair about space 1999 before we [TS]

00:15:12   move on I could pitch it again in [TS]

00:15:14   bullwinkles voice I think it goes [TS]

00:15:16   something like this [TS]

00:15:17   I think it's so adorable the way Jason [TS]

00:15:19   keeps trying to steer this back on topic [TS]

00:15:21   let's let solid form of it [TS]

00:15:24   look at you and so it's blown out of the [TS]

00:15:27   Earth's orbit it'll be amazing it's like [TS]

00:15:29   he wants this to be a comfortable [TS]

00:15:31   podcast not an incomparable podcast so [TS]

00:15:35   thank you David that's your that's your [TS]

00:15:37   that's your pitch I appreciate it [TS]

00:15:39   alright let's put the brakes on the [TS]

00:16:10   player in your car's dashboard he's out [TS]

00:16:13   in the snow somewhere the camcorders [TS]

00:16:15   kind of listing to one side it can be [TS]

00:18:04   sponsoring the uncomfortable we will [TS]

00:18:06   move on to the next pitch let's go to [TS]

00:18:08   assess so I thank you so much free time [TS]

00:18:13   everybody I've got a good pitch for you [TS]

00:18:16   I gotta get a few other spins on it too [TS]

00:18:18   because I think there's a lot of [TS]

00:18:19   different ways we can go this way I i [TS]

00:18:22   think the only way forward is magnum p.i [TS]

00:18:23   and i'll give you a reason why CBS [TS]

00:18:26   already has hawaii 50 on the year and [TS]

00:18:29   magnum p.i came in as Hawaii five-o [TS]

00:18:32   needed to go gently into that good night [TS]

00:18:34   and and I think a lot of people would [TS]

00:18:36   agree that the current version of Hawaii [TS]

00:18:38   five-o needs to need to do the same [TS]

00:18:39   thing so so there's a version of this [TS]

00:18:42   that we could do with Tom Selleck and in [TS]

00:18:45   the way that they restarted maverick [TS]

00:18:47   with a show called Bret maverick [TS]

00:18:48   starring James Garner 20 years later I [TS]

00:18:51   feel like we could do effectively [TS]

00:18:53   thomasmagnum go ahead and call it magnum [TS]

00:18:55   p.i all over again and and and have him [TS]

00:18:58   just a just pick up the reins and keep [TS]

00:19:00   going we could do that we could do that [TS]

00:19:03   alternately [TS]

00:19:06   we could friends right there with the [TS]

00:19:07   way that lets just do that [TS]

00:19:09   yeah just go ahead and I want let's [TS]

00:19:11   listen to your idea to so so so there's [TS]

00:19:13   you know the kids these days that they [TS]

00:19:15   like they like their moustaches yeah I [TS]

00:19:17   like a mustache [TS]

00:19:18   I've got a mustache it's something [TS]

00:19:20   treats me well we could we could you [TS]

00:19:23   think it up we could we could go to you [TS]

00:19:24   we could go magnum p.i junior you know [TS]

00:19:27   there's a cartoon called James Bond [TS]

00:19:29   junior so why not magnum p.i jr. we can [TS]

00:19:32   basically he'll be wearing the mustache [TS]

00:19:33   ironically he's wearing a mustache [TS]

00:19:36   ironically to piss off his dad who takes [TS]

00:19:38   on the Higgins role so it's his dad's [TS]

00:19:41   mention that his dad is like what you [TS]

00:19:43   know what you kids with these raves and [TS]

00:19:45   these laser lights what did Thomas [TS]

00:19:47   Magnum get a mansion [TS]

00:19:49   I roadmaster grass just left it left [TS]

00:19:52   Terra yeah why wouldn't he don't know [TS]

00:19:55   why wouldn't you get when you let the [TS]

00:19:56   guy drive all of your fancy cars I mean [TS]

00:19:58   that there must have been some sort of a [TS]

00:19:59   significant relationship you know I [TS]

00:20:02   where were these guys are really just [TS]

00:20:04   got along [TS]

00:20:04   I mean age it just makes sense because [TS]

00:20:06   we're talking about TV [TS]

00:20:08   I mean right so Thomas Magnum is now the [TS]

00:20:11   Owens and is also the the operator of [TS]

00:20:14   this mansion on on Oahu ok he's the one [TS]

00:20:17   saying oh my god and he's gone he's [TS]

00:20:20   eating dogs of course he's got dogs and [TS]

00:20:22   instead of Zeus and Apollo there [TS]

00:20:25   Hera and Aphrodite why not ok ok so so [TS]

00:20:29   we've got magnum p.i jr. and we [TS]

00:20:31   effectively do magnum p.i but with a kid [TS]

00:20:34   ok so maybe maybe maybe let's say you [TS]

00:20:37   want another option [TS]

00:20:38   I've got another option for you Jim [TS]

00:20:40   Henson's magnum babies sold that was my [TS]

00:20:45   fourth that was my fourth page but but [TS]

00:20:47   but no let me get there let me get there [TS]

00:20:49   let me let me get there let me get there [TS]

00:20:51   when we get there let me go please don't [TS]

00:20:52   tell the worst picture for us gents week [TS]

00:20:54   James realize your hobbies gentlemen [TS]

00:20:57   let's think it's think the city is that [TS]

00:21:00   like a character we go hip we want to go [TS]

00:21:02   young we want to do magnum p.i meet [TS]

00:21:04   Veronica Mars lady magnum junior so [TS]

00:21:08   madam has a daughter instead of a male [TS]

00:21:09   son we reenact the opening set of setup [TS]

00:21:13   of the pilot where it's magnum a couple [TS]

00:21:15   of attractive girls so we're really just [TS]

00:21:17   faking people out there making him think [TS]

00:21:19   it's it's it's magnum junior with his [TS]

00:21:21   hipster mustache and and his his douchey [TS]

00:21:23   ways but in fact one of the girls is the [TS]

00:21:25   one that threw the party and they're in [TS]

00:21:26   trouble with dad who owns the mansion [TS]

00:21:28   just like just like in the just previous [TS]

00:21:30   version now different than that of [TS]

00:21:31   course is that is the magnum jr. is a [TS]

00:21:34   girl on top of that now let's see let's [TS]

00:21:38   see how many magazines we got tcf [TS]

00:21:40   daughter [TS]

00:21:41   mhm TC had a daughter who went missing [TS]

00:21:44   and her name was melody and guess who [TS]

00:21:48   mag lady magnum juniors best friend is [TS]

00:21:50   Lady magnum junior you get together we [TS]

00:21:52   got a lot of titles in there can say [TS]

00:21:55   that you hear what was going I might [TS]

00:21:57   have we might have some intellectual [TS]

00:21:58   property problems because i believe [TS]

00:22:00   there is a feminine deodorant called [TS]

00:22:01   lady Beckham jr. it was the men's [TS]

00:22:03   deodorant and then they came up with the [TS]

00:22:05   lady magnum and then they want it was [TS]

00:22:06   too dark for Lady Anne are so we can get [TS]

00:22:09   being a clearance I'm just saying that [TS]

00:22:10   don't be wedded to ladyman interesting [TS]

00:22:12   product placement smells like Tom [TS]

00:22:14   Selleck but i like it to you don't like [TS]

00:22:19   smelling like Tom Selleck my god what's [TS]

00:22:22   wrong with strong enough for Rick ragan [TS]

00:22:24   respect almost everything about somebody [TS]

00:22:26   alright so once you've got you've got a [TS]

00:22:28   you've got Thomas magnums daughter and [TS]

00:22:31   TCS daughter is Rick involved somehow or [TS]

00:22:35   offspring of Rick or ice pick [TS]

00:22:37   I think Rick's trying to date them I [TS]

00:22:39   think it would be amazing to bring Larry [TS]

00:22:41   Manetti back as Rick I think that he's [TS]

00:22:45   really busy these days he's he's he's a [TS]

00:22:49   he actually just joined the the hawaii [TS]

00:22:53   five-o reboot last year [TS]

00:22:55   mhm so he basically is playing roughly [TS]

00:22:58   the same kind of his characters in [TS]

00:23:00   Hawaii and available he's he's in hawaii [TS]

00:23:02   and available [TS]

00:23:03   alright we chance to tell to in Hawaii [TS]

00:23:05   and available indicate as sort of like [TS]

00:23:08   Oh could you just move to got a bad [TS]

00:23:10   relationship she's moved away to get a [TS]

00:23:12   fresh start [TS]

00:23:13   she doesn't have a place to live so she [TS]

00:23:14   lives and she rented a room in a mansion [TS]

00:23:16   run by a guy wearing a detroit tigers [TS]

00:23:18   baseball cap but we never named him we [TS]

00:23:21   only see him from behind right well yeah [TS]

00:23:24   then he has to wear the baseball cap [TS]

00:23:26   turned around so we can see the do is [TS]

00:23:28   just a blue baseball cap we want to pay [TS]

00:23:30   major league baseball for the licensing [TS]

00:23:31   fee so it's just [TS]

00:23:32   bingo baseball cap think i am I I don't [TS]

00:23:35   want to diminish although the fine work [TS]

00:23:38   and effort you put into this but I was [TS]

00:23:41   waiting for this this is going to make [TS]

00:23:43   the whole evening for it [TS]

00:23:45   I i feel that i feel that you're really [TS]

00:23:50   giving short shrift to the Higgins [TS]

00:23:52   character i think that Higgins character [TS]

00:23:54   was so essential to the the the series [TS]

00:23:58   and to make it highly [TS]

00:24:00   yeah old man magnum I don't think really [TS]

00:24:02   cuts it is Higgins that but i agree [TS]

00:24:04   about the thing about Higgins was the [TS]

00:24:06   tea you know had his own adventures and [TS]

00:24:09   the the two directions i would take it [TS]

00:24:12   in one would be the Higgins chronicles [TS]

00:24:15   where it's all of all of these [TS]

00:24:17   adventures that Higgins is always [TS]

00:24:19   recounting only there only there they're [TS]

00:24:22   set to film and its star John Hodgman it [TS]

00:24:26   could try that would be I i think that [TS]

00:24:28   is good really SR John high-fat when I [TS]

00:24:30   say that I think he is the theological [TS]

00:24:33   error to John Hillerman I think he could [TS]

00:24:34   play all of the different uh [TS]

00:24:36   half-brothers and have brothers of the [TS]

00:24:39   Higgins guyana with aplomb [TS]

00:24:42   no I like the show i'm not going to even [TS]

00:24:44   bring up the other one which i think [TS]

00:24:45   would be old man magnum which is magnum [TS]

00:24:48   uh leaves the islands after the the [TS]

00:24:51   unsatisfying a season of magnum p.i go [TS]

00:24:54   to Kansas City yeah is what you're [TS]

00:24:56   saying [TS]

00:24:56   yeah it goes back to the mainland and [TS]

00:24:58   has adventures and I i was always struck [TS]

00:25:02   by a the young indiana jones chronicles [TS]

00:25:05   where they had the one book and episode [TS]

00:25:08   where was Harrison Ford and he was [TS]

00:25:09   wearing an eyepatch and how did Harrison [TS]

00:25:12   Ford lose the I neighbor [TS]

00:25:13   yeah that's all they left the fit friend [TS]

00:25:15   actually on all the old thomasmagnum and [TS]

00:25:19   uh adventures [TS]

00:25:20   yeah old thomasmagnum wandering around [TS]

00:25:22   maybe maybe goes back to Virginia for a [TS]

00:25:25   while and finds that you can't go home [TS]

00:25:26   again maybe he tries to make a go of it [TS]

00:25:28   in Detroit catch tigers game that he was [TS]

00:25:31   so cruelly denied in season 4 of magnum [TS]

00:25:34   p.i maybe he travels from city to city [TS]

00:25:37   like the fugitive for reasons that we [TS]

00:25:39   don't quite understand but I daughter [TS]

00:25:43   cycle like reading [TS]

00:25:44   yes exactly I got one alright how about [TS]

00:25:48   old man magnum he's still at the estate [TS]

00:25:51   he's pretty much living in the computer [TS]

00:25:54   room now and he has a protégé a young [TS]

00:25:59   not not a relative Overlord perhaps [TS]

00:26:02   award on and he's controlled by this [TS]

00:26:07   computerized Hawaiian shirt and he [TS]

00:26:09   guides the young Ward through all these [TS]

00:26:11   adventures magnum beyond you know tom [TS]

00:26:14   selleck's only 69 he could he you know [TS]

00:26:17   he could do he could make some [TS]

00:26:19   appearances I'm just saying that blue [TS]

00:26:20   blood show has to end soon because a [TS]

00:26:22   Wahlberg brothers luck can only last so [TS]

00:26:24   long i have to admit the the Higgins [TS]

00:26:29   chronicles intrigues me and hit i didn't [TS]

00:26:31   i'm a variety and in the in the inspired [TS]

00:26:33   John Hodgman casting I wonder if John [TS]

00:26:36   Hodgman would be up for an eight year [TS]

00:26:37   long Hawaiian vacation [TS]

00:26:39   well I his chronicler yeah they will [TS]

00:26:41   happen all over the place yes he would [TS]

00:26:43   be a world traveler like the the [TS]

00:26:45   reclusive billionaire that he is exactly [TS]

00:26:48   yeah this is the these are all these are [TS]

00:26:50   all good possibilities [TS]

00:26:52   I mean we basically have a network full [TS]

00:26:53   of magnums shows now which only makes me [TS]

00:26:55   happy [TS]

00:26:56   you know I would dive that i would i [TS]

00:26:58   would throw the remote control out the [TS]

00:26:59   window there are mad I just want to say [TS]

00:27:04   that i am actually currently missing the [TS]

00:27:07   deja who episode just to record with [TS]

00:27:09   your job because I've seen it before and [TS]

00:27:12   I remember if i keep seeing it again [TS]

00:27:13   sure sure alright met any other any [TS]

00:27:17   final thomasmagnum comments before we [TS]

00:27:18   move on I mean we could we could ruin [TS]

00:27:21   the Higgins Chronicles by then doing a [TS]

00:27:22   spin-off i call as they're saying in the [TS]

00:27:24   chatroom of the sons of higgins where [TS]

00:27:27   where you would expect magnet to have [TS]

00:27:29   loads of illegitimate children but but [TS]

00:27:32   Higgins own o'higgins got no interest no [TS]

00:27:34   no it's all the half brothers because [TS]

00:27:37   how many Higgins have brothers are there [TS]

00:27:39   there are at least three and Randy dead [TS]

00:27:41   three or four [TS]

00:27:42   yeah I I think you can also spin off one [TS]

00:27:45   of the characters on magnum p.i who was [TS]

00:27:48   really crying out for a [TS]

00:27:50   their own show and that's Agatha Chumlee [TS]

00:27:53   could could get a nice little series [TS]

00:27:56   where it's sort of her adventures on the [TS]

00:27:58   island murder she pondered he has a life [TS]

00:28:00   too you are missing one thing that he [TS]

00:28:02   Higgins had all these half-brothers [TS]

00:28:04   right but they all suspicious looked [TS]

00:28:06   exactly like him so we do like sort of a [TS]

00:28:08   westworld twist where they're all every [TS]

00:28:10   Higgins you see is actually an android [TS]

00:28:12   sent back from the future and that's the [TS]

00:28:14   best the mission of magnum who had [TS]

00:28:17   failed in his mission because now he's [TS]

00:28:18   too old now he has to basically have [TS]

00:28:20   like a Batman core of of magnums to [TS]

00:28:23   basically to handle the the Higgins [TS]

00:28:25   incursion so it's sort of like a [TS]

00:28:27   terminator meets magnum p.i Terminator [TS]

00:28:30   meets magnum p.i with a nicely groomed [TS]

00:28:35   mustache and then of them calling about [TS]

00:28:38   up the edges I want to be just basic [TS]

00:28:41   hard-working Marlboro Man style mustache [TS]

00:28:43   he isn't his knee is nothing but [TS]

00:28:45   business is dead [TS]

00:28:48   these are all good ideas now you know [TS]

00:28:51   when you said earlier that there there [TS]

00:28:53   are no bad ideas i really believe that [TS]

00:28:55   extends the magnum p.i know it is the [TS]

00:28:59   Rosetta Stone of TV drama [TS]

00:29:01   yeah yep yep first show everyone [TS]

00:29:05   respects script for i would like to read [TS]

00:29:07   that spec script i will get home alright [TS]

00:29:09   perhaps even acted out no do all the [TS]

00:29:12   party you know is there a part for me [TS]

00:29:14   and that David uh oh of course [TS]

00:29:17   okay good you know heavens and I approve [TS]

00:29:20   of your script [TS]

00:29:21   no all right let's let us uh that was [TS]

00:29:25   all under the byline of Moises xian [TS]

00:29:28   little just coming file and Moyes is [TS]

00:29:32   Andy do you have a reboot pitch for us [TS]

00:29:35   yes I do and I'll oh I'm glad because [TS]

00:29:38   otherwise why are you here [TS]

00:29:40   really excellent i'm here because it's [TS]

00:29:43   nice to hear human voices [TS]

00:29:44   okay fair not unless you also got a [TS]

00:29:46   pitch that's nice well I also have to [TS]

00:29:48   thank like this group because I thought [TS]

00:29:49   that's what this was a rock-solid pitch [TS]

00:29:51   before but there was one four-syllable [TS]

00:29:55   word to add to add to the end of the [TS]

00:29:57   this title that makes it about thirty [TS]

00:29:59   percent more awesome [TS]

00:30:01   ok [TS]

00:30:02   Rockford Files 1999 ok rock first of all [TS]

00:30:08   located the awesomeness of the Rockford [TS]

00:30:11   Files is that though the basic concedes [TS]

00:30:14   that you have this incredibly likeable [TS]

00:30:16   but kind of down-on-his-luck private [TS]

00:30:18   detective who he's an ex-con but he [TS]

00:30:20   wasn't one of these like serious ex-cons [TS]

00:30:22   just like okay I made some mistakes now [TS]

00:30:24   I really just don't want anybody to pay [TS]

00:30:26   any attention to me so he's always [TS]

00:30:27   taking these like sort of low-level [TS]

00:30:28   low-level things and not trying to get [TS]

00:30:31   his you get his nose out of joint he [TS]

00:30:33   wants to basically go go straight and [TS]

00:30:35   also not be bothered and that's the tone [TS]

00:30:37   of every single episode of the Rockford [TS]

00:30:39   Files my idea here is that we I'm seeing [TS]

00:30:43   this as one of these like cable sort of [TS]

00:30:46   series where there's like six episodes [TS]

00:30:47   per season because what I really want to [TS]

00:30:50   do is I want to populate this show with [TS]

00:30:52   nothing but great character actors [TS]

00:30:54   people who are necessary were usually in [TS]

00:30:57   demand but if you say that [TS]

00:30:58   look we're doing another 6 episode arc [TS]

00:31:00   you saw how many emmy nominations we got [TS]

00:31:02   last season it's only going to take [TS]

00:31:03   about five days shooting days out of [TS]

00:31:05   your time it's gonna be a blast can come [TS]

00:31:07   on come on board also the other twist [TS]

00:31:10   about this not necessarily twist but [TS]

00:31:12   there's not going to be any like [TS]

00:31:14   season-long arcs you will never street [TS]

00:31:17   the rockford will not spend six episodes [TS]

00:31:19   trying to get to the hatch of the bottom [TS]

00:31:21   of the ladder and then open the hatch [TS]

00:31:22   and find out oh my god it's a no clocks [TS]

00:31:24   door don't see you next year every [TS]

00:31:27   single episode is a self-contained [TS]

00:31:29   90-minute show of awesomeness now I've [TS]

00:31:31   got I've got some got some casting ideas [TS]

00:31:34   here now I want Matt Damon as rockford [TS]

00:31:36   because you have to get that guy perfect [TS]

00:31:38   james garner the idea was that you're [TS]

00:31:40   familiar with them you could get a part [TS]

00:31:43   you get a part of his career he's still [TS]

00:31:44   hot but willing to sort of trade you [TS]

00:31:47   know eight months in Budapest shooting [TS]

00:31:49   what movie were just doing nothing but [TS]

00:31:50   waiting where what if we just live in a [TS]

00:31:52   comfortable house and you commute about [TS]

00:31:54   six months to get this done [TS]

00:31:56   he's got these are you can't believe [TS]

00:31:58   he's had a rough for you refuse you [TS]

00:31:59   can't believe he can he can beat people [TS]

00:32:01   up but also its he has a likable quality [TS]

00:32:04   and also I don't think he's at a low in [TS]

00:32:06   his career but i think that he's at a [TS]

00:32:07   point where if you tell them what if we [TS]

00:32:09   book you for five months out of the year [TS]

00:32:10   to do this TV show I think he's got [TS]

00:32:12   three four kids now I think that he'd be [TS]

00:32:14   excited [TS]

00:32:15   animal to it now there's angel who is [TS]

00:32:17   the his best friends are confident and [TS]

00:32:20   sort of assistant in being a private [TS]

00:32:22   detective I see jack black in this role [TS]

00:32:25   he is the you got a parent together you [TS]

00:32:27   need a funny guy to be the the second [TS]

00:32:30   guys some guys punching someone out some [TS]

00:32:31   guys being held hostage and saying witty [TS]

00:32:33   things about drawing inside and groaning [TS]

00:32:35   and beer second because i assume that [TS]

00:32:38   would be your character that would be [TS]

00:32:39   right for a gender reversal [TS]

00:32:41   well I have well I haven't general [TS]

00:32:43   rehearsal coming home always all I yeah [TS]

00:32:46   he also he also has like his the the cop [TS]

00:32:49   that kind of put them away but now it's [TS]

00:32:51   like still active [TS]

00:32:52   first of all this is all happening so la [TS]

00:32:54   la is another character and rockford [TS]

00:32:56   files you need another signature cities [TS]

00:32:58   of the character for Matt Damon of [TS]

00:33:00   course has to be Boston so for his four [TS]

00:33:02   days before Jim Rockford unofficial [TS]

00:33:05   liaison to the Boston Police we have Amy [TS]

00:33:07   Adams who has had a lot of promotions [TS]

00:33:10   since he essentially first put rockford [TS]

00:33:12   in jail now she's sort of a Deputy [TS]

00:33:15   Commissioner sort of person where she's [TS]

00:33:17   got access to intelligence and access to [TS]

00:33:19   lots of information but she's not so [TS]

00:33:21   high up that you can occasionally be [TS]

00:33:23   seen hanging out with with Jim Rockford [TS]

00:33:25   I am scribbling so many angry notes [TS]

00:33:27   right now okay that's not contain you [TS]

00:33:31   mind if we do that's fine just keep [TS]

00:33:33   going you know that somebody had to be [TS]

00:33:35   the worst to one who let out the rest of [TS]

00:33:38   his life so yeah I'm the guy who turned [TS]

00:33:40   down the Beatles that's my legacy that [TS]

00:33:42   we need he was part of the story right [TS]

00:33:44   now but today we're talking but we're [TS]

00:33:46   talking about like I'll just go through [TS]

00:33:47   i'll just go through some some other [TS]

00:33:48   casting ideas John Hodgman as sort of [TS]

00:33:50   his liaison to the mayor's office I sort [TS]

00:33:52   of see him as the nerdy guy who has [TS]

00:33:55   access to the IBM PC 80 the 386 packard [TS]

00:33:59   bell computer that controls all the [TS]

00:34:00   information inside the mayor's office to [TS]

00:34:02   this is this is why 1999 is a great [TS]

00:34:04   place to go because not everybody has an [TS]

00:34:06   iphone in their pocket there you need to [TS]

00:34:08   have act not everybody knows how to use [TS]

00:34:10   technology but it's there so we can use [TS]

00:34:12   that for the shortcut to get the [TS]

00:34:13   information but this doesn't mean that [TS]

00:34:15   rockford doesn't have to still busting [TS]

00:34:17   shoe-leather kevin Pollak as pops as [TS]

00:34:20   Rockford's dad [TS]

00:34:21   Anjelica Huston is his pops is a wife [TS]

00:34:24   and and Rockford's mom but they're [TS]

00:34:26   divorced but they still like our buddy [TS]

00:34:27   buddy together [TS]

00:34:28   I want to put honeysuckle weeks in here [TS]

00:34:31   somewhere after after seeing everything [TS]

00:34:34   foyle's war we need castor something I [TS]

00:34:37   see here sort of as a sort of a son who [TS]

00:34:39   owns or is responsible for company that [TS]

00:34:42   has a fleet of trucks and go to the city [TS]

00:34:44   of Boston I'm thinking either MBTA [TS]

00:34:46   official or taxi dispatcher sanitation [TS]

00:34:49   or liquor distributor so she's the [TS]

00:34:51   person who can not only have that sort [TS]

00:34:53   of street-level experience but also tell [TS]

00:34:54   Jim you dr. Fineman well you know I had [TS]

00:34:59   one by one of my trucks was like late [TS]

00:35:00   for delivered because because church [TS]

00:35:02   street was blocked for like 45 minutes [TS]

00:35:04   because of it the one of his one of his [TS]

00:35:05   cars and that's that but that's the the [TS]

00:35:08   third act reveal that gets you on the [TS]

00:35:09   other place [TS]

00:35:10   robbie coltrane as in thats the local [TS]

00:35:12   minor crime lord who is is in and out of [TS]

00:35:15   almost every story he's not controlling [TS]

00:35:17   everything but he sort of he doesn't [TS]

00:35:19   have people killed he just simply has he [TS]

00:35:21   has the deliveries diverter he's like og [TS]

00:35:24   hijacking a shipment from from logan [TS]

00:35:27   diverting into it other places i also [TS]

00:35:29   want to get william h macy in there [TS]

00:35:31   somewhere maybe as the mayor who makes [TS]

00:35:33   occasional guest appearances that they [TS]

00:35:36   will be talking about him but we never [TS]

00:35:38   see them until there's a really good [TS]

00:35:39   reason to sing but when we when we need [TS]

00:35:41   the mayor of Boston will get me really [TS]

00:35:43   makes me see [TS]

00:35:44   but that's it 1999 lack of technology [TS]

00:35:47   but some technology front loaded with [TS]

00:35:49   lots of really great character actors [TS]

00:35:51   and no season arcs you can miss the [TS]

00:35:53   Deaconess for shows in a row and time to [TS]

00:35:56   an end for the fifth and that will look [TS]

00:35:57   you to get you to binge-watch the first [TS]

00:35:59   for every single one of them is going to [TS]

00:36:01   be a beautiful little inexpensive many [TS]

00:36:04   movie set in the city of Boston about [TS]

00:36:06   this very very likeable guy that we've [TS]

00:36:07   all seen in a hundred different pictures [TS]

00:36:09   i have I brought an empty pillowcase for [TS]

00:36:12   the money [TS]

00:36:13   yeah i will pass before you may each put [TS]

00:36:16   about a quarter million dollars inside [TS]

00:36:18   it all right [TS]

00:36:19   interesting interesting Phil DF thoughts [TS]

00:36:22   I I think you might have some notes I [TS]

00:36:24   have some thoughts [TS]

00:36:25   hey you know when I said that I had [TS]

00:36:27   multiple pitches prepared one of them [TS]

00:36:29   was for the Rockford Files I was [TS]

00:36:31   expected lower to pocket haha [TS]

00:36:35   but I never knew until this day that was [TS]

00:36:38   not come along haha I i will say that i [TS]

00:36:41   was lucky enough [TS]

00:36:42   well lucky might not be the word to read [TS]

00:36:44   the script for the attempt they made at [TS]

00:36:48   rebooting it a couple years ago and all [TS]

00:36:51   I will say is thank God that did not go [TS]

00:36:53   exactly because now it's in play for my [TS]

00:36:56   pitch to thank you very much for your [TS]

00:36:57   support [TS]

00:36:58   see anything with by sending in 1999 we [TS]

00:37:00   can keep the answering machine opening [TS]

00:37:02   and it'll be sort of a signature thing [TS]

00:37:05   for rocker that even in 1999 it's sort [TS]

00:37:07   of weird that you're still using a [TS]

00:37:08   cassette answering system is now in in [TS]

00:37:11   in my version it would be AT&T iphone [TS]

00:37:14   voicemail accepted hardly ever works [TS]

00:37:16   eight years in advance [TS]

00:37:19   yeah well I wouldn't no I wouldn't set [TS]

00:37:21   in 1999 here's the problem with your [TS]

00:37:23   pitch [TS]

00:37:24   Andy decides it's too perfect it'll [TS]

00:37:26   raise the bar for everybody yes if it [TS]

00:37:28   will make all other TV shows feel bad [TS]

00:37:31   and what if we give Howie Mandel role as [TS]

00:37:34   the medical examiner because that would [TS]

00:37:35   like a st. elsewhere reference the kids [TS]

00:37:37   will or not the four-year-old and fifty [TS]

00:37:39   year old kids will love that he has the [TS]

00:37:40   kids and guys are very many loads you [TS]

00:37:42   can lower the bar of anything he's in [TS]

00:37:44   believe me so my piece is probable [TS]

00:37:47   problems that's all I'm saying [TS]

00:37:49   besides the fact that it's set in Boston [TS]

00:37:50   which i I really don't think is in [TS]

00:37:52   movies and TV shows enough at this point [TS]

00:37:55   in our history [TS]

00:37:57   it's really weird looking like symptom [TS]

00:38:01   yeah we could i I was thinking about [TS]

00:38:03   what would update rockford for the [TS]

00:38:07   modern era and Jason hit upon it earlier [TS]

00:38:09   I i would i would make rock I its Jane [TS]

00:38:12   rockford when one of us is colombo was [TS]

00:38:17   such a hit [TS]

00:38:18   well no here's why I think that uh [TS]

00:38:20   rockford files would work with a female [TS]

00:38:22   uh lead is because so many of your [TS]

00:38:25   female crime-fighters female Crime [TS]

00:38:27   Solvers it's always i'm going to its the [TS]

00:38:31   avenging angel its Mariska Haggerty on [TS]

00:38:34   crime on l lon order SUV or where yet or [TS]

00:38:39   or the lady with the bad hair on the [TS]

00:38:41   show where she saw the cold cases [TS]

00:38:43   what was it called bad hair I don't [TS]

00:38:45   remember but you really don't have the [TS]

00:38:48   gym rock [TS]

00:38:49   preferred style female character where [TS]

00:38:51   it's sort of someone who's down on their [TS]

00:38:52   heels kinda you know is okay with where [TS]

00:38:55   they are in the world and I i think that [TS]

00:38:57   would be a more interesting [TS]

00:38:59   I I think making that character uh a [TS]

00:39:03   woman allows for a some more interesting [TS]

00:39:06   storylines and for some a unique [TS]

00:39:08   storytelling and I was racking my brains [TS]

00:39:12   with a blue 22 cast in that part and and [TS]

00:39:16   two names came up [TS]

00:39:17   you can pooh-pooh them if you like but [TS]

00:39:19   doing right now [TS]

00:39:21   yeah on the most recent season of [TS]

00:39:23   justified i really liked which was not [TS]

00:39:25   one of justified best seasons but i [TS]

00:39:27   really liked Alicia wits work on it [TS]

00:39:29   I i kinda thought she did a very good [TS]

00:39:32   job of playing someone who was coming [TS]

00:39:36   from a lower station in the world but [TS]

00:39:39   had enough with 22 maybe uh sorry to uh [TS]

00:39:45   uh move beyond that and I I could see [TS]

00:39:48   her doing a rockford thing if you wanted [TS]

00:39:51   to make the show a little bit more [TS]

00:39:52   goofier uh Casey Wilson a most recently [TS]

00:39:56   of happy endings I think would be a [TS]

00:39:57   would be a fine casting decision i love [TS]

00:40:00   i love the cheese casey wilson of of [TS]

00:40:02   happy endings a show that is no longer [TS]

00:40:04   on the year [TS]

00:40:05   well thatthat's the the most recent [TS]

00:40:07   reference i could think of I i like to [TS]

00:40:10   exercise her name at the comic con casey [TS]

00:40:12   wilson of marry me [TS]

00:40:14   coming this fall well not not when she [TS]

00:40:16   gets the Rockford Files guys right did [TS]

00:40:18   it well as soon as you said gender [TS]

00:40:21   reversal you know my first thought was [TS]

00:40:23   that just like the film version of [TS]

00:40:26   Maverick spoiler horn you you would have [TS]

00:40:29   that moment of you know where you just [TS]

00:40:31   you're just accepting this like a normal [TS]

00:40:33   it's just a total reboot and at the very [TS]

00:40:35   end someone's is why did you get into [TS]

00:40:36   this and she's as well it did runs in [TS]

00:40:38   the family and the camera pans over to [TS]

00:40:40   the like family photos on her wall and [TS]

00:40:42   there's Jim Gardner guess that's a copy [TS]

00:40:45   of a 1974 issue of TV Guide yeah I love [TS]

00:40:49   that you changed it legally changed my [TS]

00:40:51   name to rockford because i love that [TS]

00:40:52   show so much i'm not actually licensed [TS]

00:40:55   detective there let me show you the [TS]

00:40:56   tattoo on my bomb as the angel character [TS]

00:40:59   i would i would see if john c reilly [TS]

00:41:00   would do some television [TS]

00:41:02   think he would be outstanding in there [TS]

00:41:04   also also also a good choice we were we [TS]

00:41:06   wanted we want a funny guy 211 some of [TS]

00:41:08   the drama that might happen and people [TS]

00:41:09   say I will say though that i do have to [TS]

00:41:12   say no to the gender reversal because [TS]

00:41:14   that's get this point this is kind of a [TS]

00:41:17   hack move that's like oh and guess what [TS]

00:41:20   Rockford's not a dude Wow blow your mind [TS]

00:41:23   well I do think that you you need to add [TS]

00:41:25   more women characters to the cast of a [TS]

00:41:27   lot of these old shows so but I got [TS]

00:41:29   don't necessarily like a tool to and the [TS]

00:41:31   lien behind recast alone [TS]

00:41:33   I got it I got it I think and and well [TS]

00:41:37   captain EO Houston a regular recurring [TS]

00:41:40   role as well David mentioned the captain [TS]

00:41:43   EO is something we could be good you [TS]

00:41:48   know they do have that hologram michael [TS]

00:41:49   jackson now so we've got some not like a [TS]

00:41:51   license that we can also license back to [TS]

00:41:53   the lake to the bad era my son Michael [TS]

00:41:55   attraction i would actually doing who I [TS]

00:41:57   think is hungry for work is being [TS]

00:42:00   sourced an exact I David mentioned the [TS]

00:42:04   Dermot Mulroney failed pilot of the [TS]

00:42:07   rocks reboot on NBC a few years ago I i [TS]

00:42:10   will say I'll put in a vote if we're [TS]

00:42:12   doing a little bit of fantasy casting [TS]

00:42:13   here I feel like the guy who is best [TS]

00:42:16   suited to play rebooted Jim Rockford is [TS]

00:42:19   josh holloway formerly of lost and then [TS]

00:42:22   a bunch of failed TV show since then I [TS]

00:42:25   think he's the I think he's got the [TS]

00:42:27   appropriate amount of kind of rumpled to [TS]

00:42:29   do it while still being a leading a [TS]

00:42:31   leading man to people like I'm sorry [TS]

00:42:33   I've already cast him as a as gambit in [TS]

00:42:35   my X file serious look can we get a [TS]

00:42:39   medic and dancing kids on The X Files [TS]

00:42:42   that sky is really wow yeah it's a dick [TS]

00:42:45   Marcus boards ready to the x-files [TS]

00:42:47   rabbit goes around looking for aliens [TS]

00:42:50   because he's kinda kooky okay i don't i [TS]

00:42:53   don't read your funny books and i know [TS]

00:42:55   it started like whatever he was in the [TS]

00:42:57   running for the rockford reboot and when [TS]

00:43:00   they didn't cast him that was sort of [TS]

00:43:02   like the first rumbling of oh this yes [TS]

00:43:04   they don't know what they're doing [TS]

00:43:05   because he was the right guy for that [TS]

00:43:06   that pressure and I wouldn't fit it just [TS]

00:43:09   thinking always that guy from Los but [TS]

00:43:10   there was that season loss where he is [TS]

00:43:12   sort of the sheriff of the dharma [TS]

00:43:14   initiative in the seventies [TS]

00:43:15   and uh oh my god and a he perfect [TS]

00:43:18   perfect at that I could totally do so [TS]

00:43:21   even even watching the show intelligence [TS]

00:43:22   which was not going to be marshall awful [TS]

00:43:25   masculine awful awful awful show not [TS]

00:43:28   intelligence is not the word for that no [TS]

00:43:30   but he was still entertaining either and [TS]

00:43:33   I I hated every second of that show but [TS]

00:43:36   he was 64 yeah get-get josh holloway [TS]

00:43:39   good show any other uh rockford mm [TS]

00:43:43   thoughts before we move on i'm open to [TS]

00:43:46   having him live on a boat [TS]

00:43:48   I think he's got absolutely no [TS]

00:43:50   absolutely even if he's it in Boston I [TS]

00:43:52   think he's got to be like in the harbor [TS]

00:43:54   or something I think you've got to have [TS]

00:43:55   that that feeling of being by the water [TS]

00:43:57   I put him in Seattle myself because I [TS]

00:44:00   think that has a more today kind of feel [TS]

00:44:03   I don't see this going to want to pick [TS]

00:44:05   up a woman when harry met sally by [TS]

00:44:06   because that all that's beyond people's [TS]

00:44:08   mind in seattle where the Harriman's how [TS]

00:44:10   he said New York and there are no seams [TS]

00:44:12   and I think I think you might be [TS]

00:44:13   thinking didn't have the five of us got [TS]

00:44:15   any mail which is another movie with meg [TS]

00:44:17   Ryan and it was only your notes [TS]

00:44:20   Sleepless in Seattle we're both wrong [TS]

00:44:21   just to show you how nor effort [TS]

00:44:23   identical very light palette is it was [TS]

00:44:26   actually Sleepless in Seattle Nora [TS]

00:44:28   Ephron was painting with like mac paint [TS]

00:44:29   one point others just not either [TS]

00:44:34   witnessing the dollars in your Frazier [TS]

00:44:36   kelsey grammer could be on the show has [TS]

00:44:42   the governor so we have sort of like we [TS]

00:44:45   have we need a mayor menino sort of guy [TS]

00:44:47   like as the as as the mayor so like let [TS]

00:44:50   the guy who will make sure that the [TS]

00:44:51   lights in his home neighborhood are [TS]

00:44:52   always working and are always the first [TS]

00:44:54   street get plowed in the wintertime but [TS]

00:44:56   Kelsey Grammer is the guy who's got his [TS]

00:44:58   eyes on you could we could we could have [TS]

00:45:00   like it hadn't have presidential [TS]

00:45:01   ambitions just like another sort of [TS]

00:45:04   slick-haired made-for-tv character that [TS]

00:45:06   once ran for president was webmasters [TS]

00:45:07   governor you see this is so clicking [TS]

00:45:10   together or thomasmagnum could be [TS]

00:45:13   President of the United States time to [TS]

00:47:17   i'm going to go next and save him the [TS]

00:47:18   last what [TS]

00:47:20   ok because i don't i don't feel I i have [TS]

00:47:24   no notes although I gave it a slight [TS]

00:47:25   amount of thought i gave it no notes in [TS]

00:47:27   this way also if you are truly picking [TS]

00:47:28   gambit in the x-files I will have you be [TS]

00:47:31   at my x-files reboot does not feature [TS]

00:47:35   gambit in any one thing but thatthat's [TS]

00:47:38   my pitches i think i think we should [TS]

00:47:40   bring back the x-files I think I think [TS]

00:47:42   that's a great [TS]

00:47:43   go with a great premise of we talk about [TS]

00:47:45   standalone episodes great standalone [TS]

00:47:47   monster-of-the-week kind episodes thread [TS]

00:47:49   through with a little bit of a [TS]

00:47:50   conspiracy it was wheezing by the end [TS]

00:47:53   the last few years were awful i think [TS]

00:47:55   that the movies have been problematic to [TS]

00:47:57   awful as well it's a franchise though [TS]

00:48:00   that I feel like it has a lot of legs in [TS]

00:48:01   it because at its core it is law [TS]

00:48:03   enforcement people investigating strange [TS]

00:48:05   happenings and and there are [TS]

00:48:08   opportunities to tell Twilight Zone like [TS]

00:48:10   stories but in an anthology format but [TS]

00:48:13   with some continuing cast and i really [TS]

00:48:15   like shows like that that's one of the [TS]

00:48:16   reasons i think i like Doctor Who so [TS]

00:48:17   much is that it is essentially an [TS]

00:48:19   anthology show with a recurring element [TS]

00:48:21   and characters you get a little bit of [TS]

00:48:23   both you get some jamba shifts and some [TS]

00:48:27   different locations while also having [TS]

00:48:29   some continuity which I think people [TS]

00:48:31   like people don't want completely new [TS]

00:48:33   characters every week so I think you [TS]

00:48:35   bring back the x-files what I would not [TS]

00:48:37   do honestly is go down the path of the [TS]

00:48:42   world of TV has changed a lot since the [TS]

00:48:44   x-files one there are lots of shows [TS]

00:48:45   about teams of people who do autopsies [TS]

00:48:47   and investigate strange happenings of [TS]

00:48:49   one sort or another and the mai-mai show [TS]

00:48:52   pitch is most like how fringe started [TS]

00:48:56   but fringe went off the rails and in a [TS]

00:48:59   good way sort of but off the rails very [TS]

00:49:01   quickly into a very different show than [TS]

00:49:03   what i'm really describing here which is [TS]

00:49:04   you've got a team of people it's a [TS]

00:49:06   obviously a post-911 world there is a [TS]

00:49:08   department of homeland security group [TS]

00:49:10   that has people connections to various [TS]

00:49:13   government agencies and it's and it's a [TS]

00:49:15   team that's investigating various a [TS]

00:49:18   mysterious happenings and checking them [TS]

00:49:21   for major security problems and is there [TS]

00:49:23   terrorism involved and and one of these [TS]

00:49:25   teams is caught up in something in the [TS]

00:49:28   pilot episode that is a very strange [TS]

00:49:30   occurrence that they may be there is [TS]

00:49:32   missing time maybe they see something [TS]

00:49:34   that they don't understand but what that [TS]

00:49:36   does is it leads them to become a to [TS]

00:49:39   start to wonder that these these cases [TS]

00:49:42   that they just pawn off and file away in [TS]

00:49:43   the in the you know the draw big X on [TS]

00:49:46   them and throw them in a pile because [TS]

00:49:47   they're they're ridiculous they're [TS]

00:49:48   obviously fake maybe some of those [TS]

00:49:50   strange alien supernatural psychic [TS]

00:49:54   whatever kind of cases that they they [TS]

00:49:55   wrote off both [TS]

00:49:56   or maybe there's something to them [TS]

00:49:58   because they've all experienced [TS]

00:49:59   something that they don't quite [TS]

00:50:00   understand and they don't entirely [TS]

00:50:01   believe it actually think that you you [TS]

00:50:05   would still have two lead characters who [TS]

00:50:06   are the two main investigators but i'd [TS]

00:50:07   like to give them a team I'd like them [TS]

00:50:09   to have a a an NSA kind of spy computer [TS]

00:50:14   person I'd like them to have a commander [TS]

00:50:19   of the group maybe there's a forensic [TS]

00:50:21   specialist or something like that but I [TS]

00:50:22   don't want to be I wanted to kind of be [TS]

00:50:24   the group against the world and not the [TS]

00:50:27   group against each other where the [TS]

00:50:28   bottom where the bosses like you guys [TS]

00:50:30   following your crazy x-files things get [TS]

00:50:32   back to work I I kind of wanted the team [TS]

00:50:34   to be kind of unified and then have the [TS]

00:50:36   other agencies in Washington skeptical [TS]

00:50:38   of what they're doing and yes we will [TS]

00:50:41   cast John Hodgman since that seems to be [TS]

00:50:43   required as one of the government [TS]

00:50:46   something's John Hodgman for everything [TS]

00:50:48   maybe the condition of the computer guy [TS]

00:50:50   i'm going to get your digits [TS]

00:50:52   yeah she could be it could be that's his [TS]

00:50:54   nickname yea it's not his legal name he [TS]

00:50:56   gave me the same he will play all of the [TS]

00:50:59   lone gunman curious people he will be [TS]

00:51:01   yes they will call him the lone gunman [TS]

00:51:03   but he's just one guy singular just the [TS]

00:51:05   one lone government uh so yeah you'll [TS]

00:51:08   have two characters who are who are more [TS]

00:51:10   or less the leads are male and female i [TS]

00:51:11   actually one of the problems with the [TS]

00:51:13   x-files after hundred episodes where [TS]

00:51:15   Mulder is always right that it's [TS]

00:51:17   something supernatural Scully saying RG [TS]

00:51:19   Mulder I don't know you seriously [TS]

00:51:20   believe that yes I he's always right [TS]

00:51:23   stop being so skeptical so in this i'm [TS]

00:51:25   thinking more that they'll have [TS]

00:51:26   different angles on what they're seeing [TS]

00:51:28   where somebody will be more inclined [TS]

00:51:30   toward conspiracies or aliens or [TS]

00:51:32   something like that and somebody else [TS]

00:51:33   will be more inclined toward the [TS]

00:51:34   supernatural or psychic abilities or [TS]

00:51:36   something like that and it's really an [TS]

00:51:38   argument about not it is this real or [TS]

00:51:40   not but what is the the form that this [TS]

00:51:42   strange thing will take so I just I [TS]

00:51:44   think you do that and then to andy's [TS]

00:51:46   point about standalone you know i should [TS]

00:51:48   like this is going to have to have a an [TS]

00:51:50   overarching archive I'd like it to be [TS]

00:51:51   something not about grey aliens and [TS]

00:51:55   flying saucers so I'm thinking something [TS]

00:51:56   like strange events that might be like [TS]

00:51:59   the emergence of an artificial [TS]

00:52:01   intelligence that's taking over [TS]

00:52:02   computers around the world or some other [TS]

00:52:04   kind of more sci-fi premise that's not [TS]

00:52:06   the grey alien thing [TS]

00:52:08   and.and yeah i just think within that [TS]

00:52:11   you have that a very light story arc [TS]

00:52:13   that plays out over many seasons but you [TS]

00:52:16   spend a lot of time going to weird small [TS]

00:52:19   towns that her probably just vancouver [TS]

00:52:21   doubling for everywhere else in the [TS]

00:52:23   world and investigating strange things [TS]

00:52:25   in small towns and discovering bizarre [TS]

00:52:27   anthology like twilight zone like things [TS]

00:52:30   week to week which was for me why i love [TS]

00:52:32   that show when it was on and I think [TS]

00:52:33   that core got lost when they got into [TS]

00:52:37   all the mythology and you know David [TS]

00:52:39   Duchovny made to move the show to LA and [TS]

00:52:41   it got really popular and they cast a [TS]

00:52:43   dancer and Lily Tomlin and you got out [TS]

00:52:45   of hand but I think you could dial it [TS]

00:52:46   back [TS]

00:52:47   learn some of the lessons of your CSI [TS]

00:52:49   NCIS is your bones is and and do a show [TS]

00:52:53   that that that is that more modern on [TS]

00:52:56   procedural ensemble with the x-files DNA [TS]

00:52:59   and it so that's my pitch [TS]

00:53:01   so how does josh holloway figuring I'm [TS]

00:53:03   glad you asked i was gonna say i love [TS]

00:53:06   the idea of the team [TS]

00:53:07   I just think if you're gonna have gambit [TS]

00:53:09   you want to balance them out with your [TS]

00:53:10   particular orgasmic would be on love [TS]

00:53:13   dance with dazzler I mean come on [TS]

00:53:14   yeah sure Oh Cheryl me guess in the end [TS]

00:53:16   the end the end of course professor x [TS]

00:53:18   who's the leader of the x-files who do [TS]

00:53:20   you see as Nightcrawler yes I I that's a [TS]

00:53:25   good question perhaps josh holloway [TS]

00:53:27   there you go [TS]

00:53:29   uh I collect structure the deal so that [TS]

00:53:31   you do you have to do like to james [TS]

00:53:33   michael Straczynski thing where you have [TS]

00:53:34   the red binder where you personally have [TS]

00:53:37   written down the entire story arc season [TS]

00:53:40   four season four season and even put [TS]

00:53:42   into self-destruct laws so that it can't [TS]

00:53:44   proceed beyond the five seasons you work [TS]

00:53:45   it out [TS]

00:53:46   in fact I've already destroyed all my [TS]

00:53:47   notes so there's no risk that it will [TS]

00:53:50   have to be uncovered stays me the [TS]

00:53:52   trouble there's the door [TS]

00:53:53   I don't know Jason for the part of [TS]

00:53:55   Scully are you open to Casting vin [TS]

00:53:57   scully in that role [TS]

00:53:59   I'm walking into a dark and scary room [TS]

00:54:04   and suddenly is alien dripping subsets [TS]

00:54:06   of primordial ooze like a young Sandy [TS]

00:54:10   Koufax but that that's missing an [TS]

00:54:12   opportunity I i think i think that this [TS]

00:54:14   works great this is another great [TS]

00:54:15   opportunity to a gender flips instead of [TS]

00:54:17   a guy in a woman it's a woman and [TS]

00:54:18   excellent [TS]

00:54:20   you know I and I considered that very [TS]

00:54:22   strongly but i think i'm a bridge too [TS]

00:54:24   far i actually wouldn't in the [TS]

00:54:26   characters Mulder and Scully and I would [TS]

00:54:27   leave open the possibility of as we said [TS]

00:54:29   with these other shows you make the nod [TS]

00:54:31   and you say yes oh well there were other [TS]

00:54:33   people who worked on these cases in the [TS]

00:54:34   past and and you you pay its respect [TS]

00:54:37   while also not having it be a direct [TS]

00:54:40   gets really Andrea's dressed as a guide [TS]

00:54:43   but Dustin Hoffman dressed as a girl I [TS]

00:54:45   think vin scully though is very tempting [TS]

00:54:47   you could be the head of the Union maybe [TS]

00:54:50   as batman's organs up into small pieces [TS]

00:54:53   of meat like farmer John sausages [TS]

00:54:56   that's too bad that's just tell me [TS]

00:55:00   there's that there's like one line in [TS]

00:55:01   which their superior size now look I [TS]

00:55:03   won't have you going all moulder on me [TS]

00:55:05   there you go you know is exactly why you [TS]

00:55:08   at all [TS]

00:55:09   I can't believe this horrible hit thing [TS]

00:55:11   happened under the beautiful cerulean [TS]

00:55:13   blue sky and and the most important [TS]

00:55:16   thing [TS]

00:55:17   whichever network picks it up that's the [TS]

00:55:19   first name of the lead actor ever [TS]

00:55:22   that's right that's right el rey moulder [TS]

00:55:24   how can you do that now given the [TS]

00:55:26   contemporary audience could you started [TS]

00:55:29   off as a reboot of the x-files and then [TS]

00:55:32   slowly turn into a reboot of twin peaks [TS]

00:55:34   without telling anybody any of the [TS]

00:55:36   audience was way too late it's possible [TS]

00:55:39   i think that in some ways for motor [TS]

00:55:40   starts like eating cherry pies that said [TS]

00:55:43   that could have could all work in the in [TS]

00:55:45   the Timothy Westfall unified theory [TS]

00:55:47   universe if we're if we're shooting area [TS]

00:55:49   if we're shooting in Vancouver then it [TS]

00:55:52   will we might as well make it twin peaks [TS]

00:55:54   because you know international exposure [TS]

00:55:57   to friend we've been traveling all over [TS]

00:55:59   the country and yet it's the same phone [TS]

00:56:01   company that runs all of these phone [TS]

00:56:02   company all these billboards and pay [TS]

00:56:04   phones [TS]

00:56:05   it's part of the conspiracy or Phil we [TS]

00:56:07   take a page from the old television City [TS]

00:56:09   Chronicle premise of TV and we have them [TS]

00:56:11   investigate various things each of which [TS]

00:56:13   is itself a reference to some strange TV [TS]

00:56:15   show or other so there's a murder [TS]

00:56:17   insistently Alaska there's a murderer in [TS]

00:56:19   twin peaks you know where the whole [TS]

00:56:21   town's been abducted and we just go and [TS]

00:56:23   every every week they investigate a new [TS]

00:56:25   crime that happened in some other TV [TS]

00:56:27   show will be another effectively be cops [TS]

00:56:29   the TV [TS]

00:56:31   measure reference guest star of the week [TS]

00:56:33   show of shows [TS]

00:56:35   yes it could be that but that's not my [TS]

00:56:37   initial premise but you know I'll do [TS]

00:56:38   whatever it takes to get this baby on [TS]

00:56:39   the air [TS]

00:56:40   I'm just saying if you don't have Angela [TS]

00:56:42   Lansbury in there in the murder she [TS]

00:56:43   wrote tribute episode you know why are [TS]

00:56:45   you doing the show I i would write that [TS]

00:56:48   show in a heartbeat is their part for me [TS]

00:56:52   why did he leave town will be back he [TS]

00:56:55   just went down about you go to talk to [TS]

00:56:57   his psychoanalyst where where where [TS]

00:57:00   Angela Lansbury ends up being an [TS]

00:57:02   extraterrestrial monster that his [TS]

00:57:04   convinced a small town that she solves [TS]

00:57:06   all the murders and she's been the one [TS]

00:57:08   doing all the murders that was the [TS]

00:57:09   original I that because around that one [TS]

00:57:11   is after you not remember we have [TS]

00:57:12   murdered shot it is that's exactly how [TS]

00:57:14   it and i am now closing my browser tab [TS]

00:57:16   for murders everybody uh I thought that [TS]

00:57:21   was at the Chumley yeah murder she [TS]

00:57:24   caused anyway I I like exhales I feel [TS]

00:57:27   like they it's sitting right out there [TS]

00:57:29   as a premise and making these terrible [TS]

00:57:30   movies every few years is not the way [TS]

00:57:31   they should do what they should bring [TS]

00:57:32   back and i think i think it works beyond [TS]

00:57:35   the actors way so what movies [TS]

00:57:37   yeah complete that's this example plate [TS]

00:57:40   will put good [TS]

00:57:41   hey Phil help me out here what do you [TS]

00:57:42   have I have two pitches Jason ok one a [TS]

00:57:46   serious pitch and on one first for us [TS]

00:57:49   okay and one a very serious [TS]

00:57:52   alright alright let's start off with the [TS]

00:57:55   series but first let me take you back to [TS]

00:57:57   a a time in our country that i like to [TS]

00:58:00   call 1986 alright it's a fantastical [TS]

00:58:04   time where there's music television [TS]

00:58:07   also I've got I've got a tab open for [TS]

00:58:09   google music what's what song from the [TS]

00:58:11   era shall be playing as the background [TS]

00:58:12   think you deserve the air tonight by [TS]

00:58:14   Phil Collins might be good [TS]

00:58:15   that's the that's the guess i'm going to [TS]

00:58:17   make here it's a very good guess because [TS]

00:58:19   attribution there was a very popular [TS]

00:58:21   series called Miami Vice yes you may [TS]

00:58:24   want to play the collected works of yon [TS]

00:58:25   hammer now Jan Hammer as his friends [TS]

00:58:29   column let you do the gender switch and [TS]

00:58:33   yeah sure [TS]

00:58:34   yes ok 96 Miami Vice josh holloway might [TS]

00:58:37   be excellent [TS]

00:58:38   it's a very popular show that's not the [TS]

00:58:40   one I'm rebooting now the 1 i'm [TS]

00:58:42   rebooting is the follow-up series to my [TS]

00:58:44   advice that Michael man did when NBC [TS]

00:58:46   said you're brilliant we give you carte [TS]

00:58:49   blanche I'm gonna do it showed called [TS]

00:58:53   crime story I'm story i love you [TS]

00:58:56   that's two of us baby crime story was [TS]

00:59:05   set in the nineteen sixties it started [TS]

00:59:08   off in Chicago it gradually moved to Las [TS]

00:59:10   Vegas it was a very stylish show very [TS]

00:59:14   good madam respects not so good in some [TS]

00:59:17   other respects in that it went crazy and [TS]

00:59:20   went off the practicals several times um [TS]

00:59:24   the the first season 1 cliffhanger was [TS]

00:59:28   that the main villain was blown up in a [TS]

00:59:30   nuclear nuclear test in las vegas desert [TS]

00:59:33   only he didn't die he came back alive [TS]

00:59:36   but didn't have Hulk powers and and they [TS]

00:59:40   had one plot line where the main villain [TS]

00:59:43   after surviving the nuclear blast flew [TS]

00:59:45   down to like a banana republic to set up [TS]

00:59:47   some crime domain just as it happened in [TS]

00:59:50   real life and it it it was um it was in [TS]

00:59:55   many ways a very good series and in many [TS]

00:59:57   ways a very bad series and do not [TS]

00:59:57   ways a very bad series and do not [TS]

01:00:00   if you go back and watch some of the [TS]

01:00:01   episodes as i have uh because some of [TS]

01:00:04   the movement posted to YouTube what [TS]

01:00:06   you're struck by is how slow the pacing [TS]

01:00:09   is because um somewhere around the [TS]

01:00:12   mid-nineties with ER in such the pacing [TS]

01:00:15   for TV shows became very very different [TS]

01:00:18   so that some of your ad shows and crime [TS]

01:00:20   story is a a prime example with this you [TS]

01:00:23   are just sitting there waiting for [TS]

01:00:24   things to happen going to come on [TS]

01:00:27   so what I would do is reboot crime story [TS]

01:00:30   uh and the main thing i do is make it a [TS]

01:00:33   limited run series so you don't have [TS]

01:00:35   these stupid cliffhangers where a guy [TS]

01:00:38   goes out into the desert and gets blown [TS]

01:00:40   up by a nuclear bomb and comes back [TS]

01:00:42   alive [TS]

01:00:43   you don't have these of these open ended [TS]

01:00:46   things rather you have 12 episodes you [TS]

01:00:49   madman the hell out of it where it [TS]

01:00:51   mirrors actual things going on [TS]

01:00:53   throughout history and it tells the [TS]

01:00:55   story of of a las vegas i think is a [TS]

01:00:59   very a interesting story to tell with a [TS]

01:01:03   lot of dramatic possibilities there was [TS]

01:01:06   a show not too long ago with dennis [TS]

01:01:07   quaid that failed miserably at doing [TS]

01:01:10   this and i think uh in the hands of a [TS]

01:01:13   competent director a competent [TS]

01:01:16   showrunner could really be done well [TS]

01:01:20   over the course of 13 to 24 episodes and [TS]

01:01:25   that would be my pitch bring back crime [TS]

01:01:27   story but this time put a couple of put [TS]

01:01:31   a couple of limits on it I think that's [TS]

01:01:34   good i I think that premise a period [TS]

01:01:39   pieces kinda hard-bitten police [TS]

01:01:41   detective guys limited-run i think i [TS]

01:01:45   think that's a nice so I think that's a [TS]

01:01:47   nice idea it was stylish it was really [TS]

01:01:48   stylish and and the period thing was was [TS]

01:01:51   a very different thing for TV in that [TS]

01:01:53   area to go back to the sixties like that [TS]

01:01:55   i remember well you have i've got a [TS]

01:01:58   whole half shelf of books on Vegas [TS]

01:02:00   history here that might go into a [TS]

01:02:03   project i'm thinking about so it is a [TS]

01:02:07   very interesting times that project [TS]

01:02:09   crime story the TV [TS]

01:02:11   it might be now and let's not sell short [TS]

01:02:14   the the Chicago portions of the the [TS]

01:02:17   serio actually I like many ways my [TS]

01:02:19   favorite part of the series I really [TS]

01:02:21   liked how they did that it was a more [TS]

01:02:23   solid show at that point and sort of the [TS]

01:02:25   vegas thing was sort of like oh well [TS]

01:02:27   let's make it flashy yeah and and then [TS]

01:02:30   you have the nuclear bomb so I can't [TS]

01:02:32   help but feel that the biggest parts [TS]

01:02:33   were NBC go network notes yeah we yeah [TS]

01:02:35   we wanted we wanted to Miami Vice like [TS]

01:02:38   show this isn't my advice is moody and [TS]

01:02:40   set the sixties what the hell are you [TS]

01:02:42   doing okay i'll move it to Vegas their [TS]

01:02:44   nuclear bomb tho crime story nuke the [TS]

01:02:47   fridge 25 years earlier [TS]

01:02:50   exactly i see a young George Lucas in [TS]

01:02:52   1986 going I'm going to have to use this [TS]

01:02:55   and so what's your what's your what's [TS]

01:02:58   your more serious pitch my very serious [TS]

01:03:00   bitch huh [TS]

01:03:02   and I i will brook no dissent on this [TS]

01:03:04   one here that Andy I'm and I'm listening [TS]

01:03:08   intently and making notes about how i'm [TS]

01:03:09   going to descend with all right it's set [TS]

01:03:11   in boston MA let me take you back in [TS]

01:03:14   time out to the battery [TS]

01:03:17   okay are we still in 1986 or have we [TS]

01:03:19   moved now imagine world where you go [TS]

01:03:22   back in time again for the very first [TS]

01:03:24   time and win a World Gym we've gotten in [TS]

01:03:28   our time machine [TS]

01:03:29   how can i watched crime story in 1986 [TS]

01:03:31   we've set the dial back 10 years to time [TS]

01:03:34   I like to call 1976 [TS]

01:03:36   ok it's the Bicentennial those tall [TS]

01:03:39   ships are really raising America's [TS]

01:03:41   spirits after Watergate a young peanut [TS]

01:03:45   farmer has emerged from the fields of [TS]

01:03:47   Georgia his name Jimmy Carter [TS]

01:03:50   meanwhile a young Roone Arledge says [TS]

01:03:53   what can we do to bring joy to this [TS]

01:03:57   nation ribbon asunder by Watergate [TS]

01:04:00   bye-bye vietnam by by scandal and and [TS]

01:04:04   and recession i know just like we need [TS]

01:04:08   to bring this nation together we will [TS]

01:04:10   bring networks together and have a [TS]

01:04:13   battle a battle of network stars so I [TS]

01:04:21   I think we need to bring back battle of [TS]

01:04:22   the Network Stars it has been too long [TS]

01:04:24   it has been a 25 years i believe since [TS]

01:04:28   the last battle of the Network Stars and [TS]

01:04:31   I think that that the TV universe is [TS]

01:04:35   change so much you could literally have [TS]

01:04:37   a battle of the Network Stars olympics [TS]

01:04:39   with a parade of networks [TS]

01:04:41   here's the delegation from netflix oh [TS]

01:04:43   look it's FX Margo Martindale is leading [TS]

01:04:46   the charge [TS]

01:04:47   hey everyone here's the AMC exactly uh [TS]

01:04:52   they have imagined of madmen and then [TS]

01:04:54   the walking dead i would love to see Tom [TS]

01:04:56   Selleck and corey burton you know in a [TS]

01:05:00   foot race against each other [TS]

01:05:02   god damn you sir i had odd [TS]

01:05:05   damn you sir do you realize how many [TS]

01:05:07   years and lives we've applied to finally [TS]

01:05:10   diffusing that situation but no you've [TS]

01:05:13   got stretching I'll on adidas tank tops [TS]

01:05:15   to sell and you want to reiterate my [TS]

01:05:17   hostilities just so you can profiteer I [TS]

01:05:19   say god damn you sir but we barely got [TS]

01:05:23   Gabe Kaplan out of that alive and here [TS]

01:05:25   between the networks and now this Chuck [TS]

01:05:27   Conrad is still on the loose [TS]

01:05:29   still the ace of spades of the dick and [TS]

01:05:30   the deck of most-wanted Tim Reed is [TS]

01:05:33   still trying to get out of the kayak [TS]

01:05:35   race so many of my happiest childhood [TS]

01:05:39   memories revolve around that wasn't [TS]

01:05:43   motorcars it has it has a fan of team [TS]

01:05:45   ABC i will never forget the tears that I [TS]

01:05:48   said when longtime kaplan long time [TS]

01:05:50   captain Gabe Kaplan switched over to [TS]

01:05:53   team NBC [TS]

01:05:54   that's right oh yeah I was like that was [TS]

01:05:57   a good day when I Ciara see proud as a [TS]

01:05:59   peacock you just got to be there [TS]

01:06:02   yeah yeah yep I mean ratings were [TS]

01:06:05   important but they won the Network Stars [TS]

01:06:07   and I i suspect to this day that NBC [TS]

01:06:12   cast bubba smith and show specifically [TS]

01:06:14   so that they could have bubba smith on [TS]

01:06:18   their team one year I mean you don't go [TS]

01:06:20   into battle with Charlene Tilton you [TS]

01:06:22   don't go into battle with Randy oaks you [TS]

01:06:24   bring Bubba Smith to the table so how [TS]

01:06:26   does but how does this work as a show is [TS]

01:06:28   it is it on one network doesn't rotate [TS]

01:06:30   around like the emmys is it is it a [TS]

01:06:34   series it's just that I feel like an [TS]

01:06:37   elimination competition because there's [TS]

01:06:38   so many networks now in exactly 4 13 to [TS]

01:06:42   26 weeks it's funny that you should [TS]

01:06:44   mention the emmys Jason because I sort [TS]

01:06:46   of envision this as being an [TS]

01:06:47   end-of-the-summer type type gathering [TS]

01:06:50   hasta love TV that culminates in the [TS]

01:06:53   emmys you have your week-long of [TS]

01:06:55   competition and games and tournaments [TS]

01:06:57   and and and you bring back the dunking [TS]

01:07:01   booth and the relay race in the end and [TS]

01:07:04   the obstacle course but you also simon [TS]

01:07:06   says yes i was going to say this fails [TS]

01:07:08   without Simon sighs you and other [TS]

01:07:10   elements to the show you have a show [TS]

01:07:13   that's on the on the cusp of getting [TS]

01:07:15   renewed hey bring in the the stars of [TS]

01:07:18   that show to compete in the Battle of [TS]

01:07:19   the Network Stars Hunger Games style and [TS]

01:07:22   we'll figure out if if community [TS]

01:07:24   deserves another season hope you're good [TS]

01:07:28   at cycling joel mchale because that's [TS]

01:07:31   the only way your show is coming back [TS]

01:07:33   maybe it should be like the like the [TS]

01:07:34   all-star game where May sweeps decides [TS]

01:07:37   which network gets the home-field [TS]

01:07:38   advantage [TS]

01:07:39   I like the way you're thinking yeah yeah [TS]

01:07:41   we watch which junior college gets the [TS]

01:07:44   penny pollack and how it's going to be a [TS]

01:07:46   pepper done it has to be a pepper done I [TS]

01:07:49   i think that the one factor if you'll [TS]

01:07:53   notice when battle of the Network Stars [TS]

01:07:56   really lost its cultural cachet as it [TS]

01:07:59   were was when they replaced Howard [TS]

01:08:01   Cosell as the the host of it they they [TS]

01:08:03   brought me you brought dick Van Patten [TS]

01:08:04   on and I I'm sure we all dearly love [TS]

01:08:08   dick Van Patten and his contributions to [TS]

01:08:10   the world poker tour but quite honestly [TS]

01:08:13   he's no Howard Cosell so the only person [TS]

01:08:17   that I could think of that brings that [TS]

01:08:19   equal party either love him or you hate [TS]

01:08:21   him would be Gus Johnson who's a fox [TS]

01:08:24   sports announcer who is most famous [TS]

01:08:26   currently for screaming at people when [TS]

01:08:29   when things of varying degrees of [TS]

01:08:32   excitement happen i don't see I think he [TS]

01:08:34   would be a fantastic uh co celion like [TS]

01:08:38   addition to a show that i'm calling [TS]

01:08:40   battle of the stars 21st cent battle of [TS]

01:08:43   the Network Stars 21st century edition [TS]

01:08:46   maybe down up with tim mccarver just for [TS]

01:08:49   extra hate I i think so i think you're [TS]

01:08:52   on behalf of mr. vice guys like I'm [TS]

01:08:54   definitely be on board with this because [TS]

01:08:56   especially like if you really update the [TS]

01:08:58   obstacle course because i would love to [TS]

01:08:59   see Lena Dunham have to do the wipeout [TS]

01:09:01   course or the American Ninja Warrior [TS]

01:09:02   first and fore and forced to keep trying [TS]

01:09:06   until she finishes everybody because [TS]

01:09:07   everybody has those like TV people they [TS]

01:09:09   really don't like and you can't and [TS]

01:09:12   usually because they're on popular shows [TS]

01:09:14   they don't wind up on those bottom of [TS]

01:09:15   the basement reality TV shows like i'm a [TS]

01:09:18   celebrity get out of here let's get me [TS]

01:09:19   out of here but yeah if you if your [TS]

01:09:21   basic contractually say you also current [TS]

01:09:23   work we're contracting it for 12 super [TS]

01:09:25   12 episodes [TS]

01:09:26   + 1 special and they don't tell you that [TS]

01:09:29   by the way if we don't if you give us [TS]

01:09:30   some guff about about your per diem that [TS]

01:09:32   one special is going to have to be [TS]

01:09:34   Battle Network Stars and yes it will be [TS]

01:09:36   the the Ninja Warrior course we won't [TS]

01:09:39   shift to show around we'll leave it on [TS]

01:09:40   for 10 weeks in a row but you have to do [TS]

01:09:43   the dunk tank we've heard a lot of [TS]

01:09:45   pitches tonight but I don't think we've [TS]

01:09:46   heard one bad idea involving battle of [TS]

01:09:49   the Network Stars all of this is gold [TS]

01:09:51   oh yeah and you know where we're having [TS]

01:09:53   some last what happens [TS]

01:09:54   having some chuckles but I i really [TS]

01:09:57   wouldn't fight everyone within the sound [TS]

01:09:59   of my voice to go on youtube and lookup [TS]

01:10:02   battle of the Network Stars clip where [TS]

01:10:04   Robert Conrad is in said step out some [TS]

01:10:07   sort of rules violation that's what I [TS]

01:10:10   was it's it's also something that would [TS]

01:10:12   fill all of these networks primetime [TS]

01:10:15   schedule we're having trouble coming up [TS]

01:10:17   with stuff that actually works it's [TS]

01:10:19   literally on all of them at the same [TS]

01:10:21   time [TS]

01:10:22   yeah because I mean Hollywood game night [TS]

01:10:24   please shoot me [TS]

01:10:25   ya know but I'm not another week I was [TS]

01:10:28   sitting here fired up [TS]

01:10:30   youtube on the appletv and we watched [TS]

01:10:32   about I don't know three hours of old [TS]

01:10:34   battle of the Network Stars clips and [TS]

01:10:36   the kids were fascinated like TV stars [TS]

01:10:38   used to do this and I had to explain why [TS]

01:10:41   the one the one set of Clips had billy [TS]

01:10:43   crystal and Howard Cosell and why that [TS]

01:10:45   was a big deal and david letterman [TS]

01:10:47   telecasters and and and they were like [TS]

01:10:50   why is Billy Crystal doing that because [TS]

01:10:52   you can do a Howard Cosell impression [TS]

01:10:53   who's Howard Cosell that guy that guy [TS]

01:10:55   and by the end by the end of that they [TS]

01:10:58   were totally they're like why don't we [TS]

01:10:59   do this [TS]

01:11:00   no Phil Phil has given us the gift that [TS]

01:11:02   will keep on giving which is that [TS]

01:11:03   there's not like there's literally is [TS]

01:11:05   not a bad part of this pitch it would [TS]

01:11:07   even be once I don't want to reboot [TS]

01:11:09   celebrity bowling i love was a little [TS]

01:11:13   boy I would like to just run by anmol [TS]

01:11:14   that November because it used to be [TS]

01:11:17   twice a year that battle of the Network [TS]

01:11:19   Stars would come along and here is the [TS]

01:11:21   November 1978 CBS team as Captain by [TS]

01:11:24   McLean Stevenson he had valerie [TS]

01:11:27   bertinelli he had LeVar Burton he had [TS]

01:11:29   Lou Ferrigno he had David Letterman he [TS]

01:11:32   had Tim breed he had shearling Tilton [TS]

01:11:34   and someone named Pat Klaus yep [TS]

01:11:37   from veteran hi that is a fantastic team [TS]

01:11:40   i should say that they are bringing mac [TS]

01:11:43   celebrity bowling is apparently being [TS]

01:11:44   done by Nerdist industries and this they [TS]

01:11:48   are they did a bunch of episodes over [TS]

01:11:49   yeah it's gonna be awful but I would [TS]

01:11:52   know what's good [TS]

01:11:53   it's actually not yet daytime maximum [TS]

01:11:55   karen gillan bowling a comic con that [TS]

01:11:57   was kind of hilarious to watch doctor [TS]

01:12:00   who tried to bolt [TS]

01:12:00   you know i will go say go find the [TS]

01:12:03   celebrity bowling episode with Michael [TS]

01:12:06   Douglas as one of the guests because the [TS]

01:12:08   whole time he has this look on his face [TS]

01:12:10   of just fury that he has been trapped in [TS]

01:12:14   a bowling alley and forced to do this [TS]

01:12:15   it's a BCS change of San Francisco's [TS]

01:12:18   michael douglas and not the talk show [TS]

01:12:19   host Mike Douglas right yeah okay [TS]

01:12:22   yes and over an extinction talk talk [TS]

01:12:25   show host Mike Douglas raging with fury [TS]

01:12:27   is a beautiful thing to there is in fact [TS]

01:12:29   a a multi DVD set of celebrity bowling [TS]

01:12:32   which are you can probably order using [TS]

01:12:34   the incomparables amazon affiliate code [TS]

01:12:36   it's like 20 bucks and it has it has [TS]

01:12:38   shatter it has loads of really great [TS]

01:12:41   celebrity bowling episodes on it and i [TS]

01:12:43   would argue that it is more enjoyable [TS]

01:12:44   than most things that you could buy on [TS]

01:12:46   DVD these days [TS]

01:12:47   several years ago I I live-tweeted a [TS]

01:12:49   marathon of it under a celebrity bowling [TS]

01:12:51   account [TS]

01:12:52   Jamie Farr was a two-time captain of the [TS]

01:12:57   CBS team on battle of the Network Stars [TS]

01:12:59   other multiple captain that magic figure [TS]

01:13:02   included several merchants jamie farr [TS]

01:13:06   I'd like to I'd like to take a moment to [TS]

01:13:07   pause for word from our sponsor the [TS]

01:13:09   battle of the Network Stars page on [TS]

01:13:11   wikipedia now i'm reading through it [TS]

01:13:13   I I have lost all interesting thought [TS]

01:13:15   you people who i am in a battle of the [TS]

01:13:17   Network Stars wormhole yeah yeah pretty [TS]

01:13:19   much all right if there's nothing more [TS]

01:13:21   than i'm going to close up the TV reboot [TS]

01:13:23   pitch but we just got just one note one [TS]

01:13:26   or more oh I got a black and brown or [TS]

01:13:28   dancing around it i hope you will bring [TS]

01:13:30   out our dead now if you've got other [TS]

01:13:31   pitches you'd like to make quickly [TS]

01:13:32   please go okay well I've got one that [TS]

01:13:36   serious and one that's less serious the [TS]

01:13:37   one that serious and this is something [TS]

01:13:38   not more serious its user it's it's more [TS]

01:13:41   it's more serious than very serious fair [TS]

01:13:43   enough [TS]

01:13:44   firefly the animated series it's [TS]

01:13:46   literally the only way to get that cast [TS]

01:13:47   back together [TS]

01:13:48   there's an audience for it and even with [TS]

01:13:51   the comic adaptations which are being [TS]

01:13:52   treated as canonical go ahead and do [TS]

01:13:54   that as something like what DC [TS]

01:13:57   Entertainment has been doing with their [TS]

01:13:59   features do that as a as a feature kick [TS]

01:14:01   off to an actual netflix or hulu series [TS]

01:14:03   or something like that [TS]

01:14:05   why not do it i mean i literally can get [TS]

01:14:07   each of the actors as their availability [TS]

01:14:09   allows into a studio there you go over [TS]

01:14:11   and done great idea less serious less [TS]

01:14:14   serious WKRP FM a show about johnny [TS]

01:14:20   fever doing podcasts peridot FM don't [TS]

01:14:25   have him yeah well there's somebody I [TS]

01:14:26   just checked and somebody actually owns [TS]

01:14:28   WKRP dot FM and it looks awful and I [TS]

01:14:30   think it's hosted on godaddy yeah well [TS]

01:14:32   by well and replace it but please can we [TS]

01:14:36   please David you have something I have [TS]

01:14:38   to one that I I'd be very serious about [TS]

01:14:42   because i have about I don't know 80 [TS]

01:14:46   outlines for stories for this and I [TS]

01:14:48   don't have to do it under this name but [TS]

01:14:50   it would be so much more fun to do it [TS]

01:14:51   under the name twilight zone because [TS]

01:14:54   it's just because the main things might [TS]

01:14:56   the main rules i have for that is it's [TS]

01:14:58   got to be in black and white [TS]

01:14:59   it's got to be in period it's it's like [TS]

01:15:01   film noir it's like science noir it [TS]

01:15:04   never works in in modern-day color and I [TS]

01:15:07   mean they're ok they're just not all [TS]

01:15:09   that entertaining and and it has to kind [TS]

01:15:12   of ignore science reality because how [TS]

01:15:15   many of those episodes I mean how many [TS]

01:15:17   millions of miles are we from the Sun [TS]

01:15:18   but according to Rod Serling where three [TS]

01:15:21   so so it's like it you don't need [TS]

01:15:25   science fact [TS]

01:15:26   necessarily it's not important the other [TS]

01:15:29   one is also kind of serious but it's a [TS]

01:15:31   show that nobody knows and I fell in [TS]

01:15:33   love with it and i think it would really [TS]

01:15:36   work these days 60 minutes will [TS]

01:15:40   reanimate more least I'm I'm ways on [TS]

01:15:43   Eddie I'm seeing John Hodgman is more of [TS]

01:15:45   a safer world one john hodgman is Morley [TS]

01:15:47   Safer Josh Holloway is mike wallace yes [TS]

01:15:49   no wait he'd be Dan Rather he'd be dan [TS]

01:15:50   Rather jack black is mike wallace but no [TS]

01:15:55   I like Holloway's mike wallace Jackie [TS]

01:15:57   Jackie black as more of a sudden [TS]

01:16:00   everything kosher salt lake city really [TS]

01:16:02   that's good yeah [TS]

01:16:03   will smith is it brand ok no no this is [TS]

01:16:07   what you want to know is actually this [TS]

01:16:10   this was on for 13 weeks in 1964 between [TS]

01:16:13   Gilligan's Island Gunsmoke and there's [TS]

01:16:15   just no logical reason why they [TS]

01:16:18   scheduled this was a show called mr. [TS]

01:16:21   Broadway with all what's-his-name friend [TS]

01:16:26   Broadway the Craig Craig what's this who [TS]

01:16:29   was Peter Gunn as as a Broadway press [TS]

01:16:31   agent who is sometimes he would solve [TS]

01:16:33   murders and sometimes he would deal with [TS]

01:16:35   christine celebrities and it i just see [TS]

01:16:38   this is like you know the good parts of [TS]

01:16:40   smash with with a little bit of mad men [TS]

01:16:43   with a little bit of crime story all [TS]

01:16:46   hearts of smash so you mean all of them [TS]

01:16:48   the songs [TS]

01:16:51   oh we're going to have it about smash [TS]

01:16:54   aren't me [TS]

01:16:55   no I don't think there'll be a lot of [TS]

01:16:57   fun and ok thank God but there's there's [TS]

01:17:00   a dave brubeck album he did the music [TS]

01:17:01   for it and it's called jazz impressions [TS]

01:17:04   of New York gorgeous gorgeous music so [TS]

01:17:07   it'd be great to to just like take that [TS]

01:17:10   and give it life [TS]

01:17:11   alright and we can we get quick can we [TS]

01:17:14   get dave brubeck for the reboot we'd [TS]

01:17:17   have to reanimate but josh holloway [TS]

01:17:18   would make a good Dave group [TS]

01:17:20   alright good good to know good to know [TS]

01:17:22   and and it would start John John Hodgman [TS]

01:17:26   as mr. Broadway reality narrowness [TS]

01:17:28   Broadway the deranged millionaire ok [TS]

01:17:32   goes to tear it out and make condos [TS]

01:17:34   that's right but there's going to be a [TS]

01:17:35   bikini car wash that will earn money [TS]

01:17:39   to prevent him from destroying broadway [TS]

01:17:41   and replace mr. and mr. Broadway's rival [TS]

01:17:44   is Freddie park place [TS]

01:17:46   yep and just mock see if this next show [TS]

01:17:48   is a hit I bringing the bulldozers head [TS]

01:17:51   off Broadway let's count avenue of the [TS]

01:17:54   americas this is archenemy [TS]

01:17:57   uh Andy did you have introduced fifty [TS]

01:17:59   first Street how do you have anymore [TS]

01:18:01   one-line neil patrick harris alan [TS]

01:18:05   cumming and kristin chenoweth in cop [TS]

01:18:08   Rock oh my god so we go perfectly [TS]

01:18:12   oh my god and smash it's a it's about a [TS]

01:18:14   bunch of it's about a bunch of cops who [TS]

01:18:16   get stranded on a large rock it's it's [TS]

01:18:18   about Broadway cops you'd want to show [TS]

01:18:21   called Broadway cops [TS]

01:18:22   alright rum tum tugger we're bringing [TS]

01:18:24   you in [TS]

01:18:26   sorry anything else out there we are we [TS]

01:18:28   done i have no other pitches that was I [TS]

01:18:29   i I'm i justjust the Exile storing [TS]

01:18:32   gambit and professor and spyware where [TS]

01:18:34   they were the throw a jokes a star trek [TS]

01:18:36   the next next generations or wagered our [TS]

01:18:39   track return to Voyager island i do [TS]

01:18:42   think there needs to be a star trek show [TS]

01:18:43   in all seriousness and and that I don't [TS]

01:18:46   want to set it in the JJ Abrams reboot [TS]

01:18:48   universe in that time period i think [TS]

01:18:50   that would be great because it there [TS]

01:18:51   unencumbered by a lot of continuity then [TS]

01:18:53   but i do think Star Trek actually works [TS]

01:18:55   better on happening on through the third [TS]

01:18:57   move on TV so they need to do [TS]

01:18:58   yeah yeah it's happening after the third [TS]

01:19:01   me what I wanted to do a show called [TS]

01:19:02   before mash alright it's just the [TS]

01:19:08   adventures of Hawkeye Pierce and main if [TS]

01:19:09   that really takes off you could follow [TS]

01:19:11   the sequel during mash Terry mashed [TS]

01:19:13   potato mash the young Hawkeye Pierce [TS]

01:19:15   adventures yes sir [TS]

01:19:17   during match what sort of me this [TS]

01:19:18   Rashomon version of mass where it's the [TS]

01:19:20   same plots but filmed from different [TS]

01:19:22   perspectives [TS]

01:19:25   I i think it's a good time to end I [TS]

01:19:27   think this has been an interesting [TS]

01:19:28   exercise i like that it wasn't a draft i [TS]

01:19:30   like it was a little bit more [TS]

01:19:31   collaborative I don't know why we are [TS]

01:19:34   not producing shows at at TV networks [TS]

01:19:39   today however I haven't listened to this [TS]

01:19:40   episode yet so that might give give it [TS]

01:19:43   away but i thought this was a lot of fun [TS]

01:19:45   and I do think that there [TS]

01:19:48   I mean Hollywood is dedicated to [TS]

01:19:49   bringing back all the old stuff and [TS]

01:19:51   turning it into movies or TV [TS]

01:19:53   shows again so if you're gonna do it do [TS]

01:19:55   it right and and I think we've got some [TS]

01:19:57   suggestions so you know where r please [TS]

01:19:59   contact us we have a reasonable fee if [TS]

01:20:02   you would if you would like to to get in [TS]

01:20:04   on our brilliant ideas about how the [TS]

01:20:05   back bring back some old TV shows [TS]

01:20:07   I'd like to thank my guests for [TS]

01:20:50   watch the shows we talked about the [TS]

01:20:52   original sir are generally pretty good [TS]
