00:00:33   podcast I'm your host Jason Snell and [TS]

00:00:36   tonight we're going to discuss some news [TS]

00:00:39   of note something that just happened the [TS]

00:00:41   other day as we record this which is the [TS]

00:00:45   cast of Star Wars Episode 7 was [TS]

00:00:49   announced so this is another installment [TS]

00:00:51   on our run up to the new Star Wars [TS]

00:00:53   movies we did that episode when disney [TS]

00:00:55   bought Star Wars and announced that [TS]

00:00:56   would be an episode 7 where we all just [TS]

00:00:58   sort of were shell-shocked and going [TS]

00:00:59   what this is happening and now we know [TS]

00:01:02   even more about it and I think there's [TS]

00:01:04   some interesting wrinkles to this so i [TS]

00:01:05   thought it was worth spending a little [TS]

00:01:07   bit of time talking about it and also [TS]

00:01:09   this is not a bad week to do a star wars [TS]

00:01:11   episode since that most commercial [TS]

00:01:14   hallmark holiday of for space holidays [TS]

00:01:17   may the fourth is coming up like we're [TS]

00:01:19   posting this episode of me the third so [TS]

00:01:21   made the third be with you anyway here [TS]

00:01:23   are my guests to talk about Star Wars [TS]

00:01:24   things indian taco [TS]

00:01:26   hello hello buddy open your presence [TS]

00:01:29   made the mate of the fourth be the star [TS]

00:01:31   wars day evar star wars day day I like [TS]

00:01:34   to open one on on the evening of me the [TS]

00:01:37   third and then we save the rest of them [TS]

00:01:38   for me the fourth it's just so hard to [TS]

00:01:40   get the kids wound down and get into bed [TS]

00:01:41   after the excitement of opening a [TS]

00:01:42   present that's all good good to know [TS]

00:01:46   good the good point [TS]

00:01:47   I like what you're like what you're [TS]

00:01:48   saying there Dan Morgan is also here [TS]

00:01:50   hello [TS]

00:01:51   I you know totally invented may the 4th [TS]

00:01:54   by the dancing queen greeting card [TS]

00:01:56   company and I really couldn't be more [TS]

00:01:58   upset about it totally takes all the all [TS]

00:02:01   the joy and love out of may the 4th yeah [TS]

00:02:05   I decide to be adjacent they keep the [TS]

00:02:08   may Parker in may the 4th that's what I [TS]

00:02:11   say wow [TS]

00:02:11   crossing the streams that's extra [TS]

00:02:14   confusing and all owned by disney [TS]

00:02:15   certain and serenity Caldwell's also out [TS]

00:02:18   there hello hi I'm gonna be sleeping on [TS]

00:02:21   may the 4th because hopefully we'll have [TS]

00:02:22   just wanted roller derby game so may the [TS]

00:02:26   fourth be merry and and sleep filled [TS]

00:02:30   have a Merry maybe for can you celebrate [TS]

00:02:33   me the fourth when you're in canada i [TS]

00:02:35   don't know if that's a thing [TS]

00:02:36   no you can celebrate me the fourth [TS]

00:02:38   early if they celebrated never like [TS]

00:02:40   april twentieth ok [TS]

00:02:43   oh yeah we've already missed it yeah and [TS]

00:02:46   Lisa Schmeisser is here hi Lisa how are [TS]

00:02:49   you [TS]

00:02:49   you'll I know you love casting and so [TS]

00:02:52   two ideas para el that makes it that [TS]

00:02:55   makes this extra exciting [TS]

00:02:56   oh and John syracuse of course we [TS]

00:02:59   wouldn't do an episode without a mobile [TS]

00:03:00   we almost did but he he's here hi john i [TS]

00:03:03   arrived at the appointed time [TS]

00:03:05   yeah that's what you say maybe but maybe [TS]

00:03:08   the third be with you or something like [TS]

00:03:11   that [TS]

00:03:11   ok so episode 7 it's uh it's happening [TS]

00:03:15   we already covered that and now i'm now [TS]

00:03:17   we have cast members so so first off [TS]

00:03:22   we've got as as rumored as suggested [TS]

00:03:26   we've got Harrison Ford Carrie Fisher [TS]

00:03:29   and Mark Hamill all back but they're [TS]

00:03:31   playing each other's roles so it's [TS]

00:03:32   really just kind of an interesting [TS]

00:03:33   exercise that's a mistake don't you [TS]

00:03:36   Harrison Ford as Princess Leia yeah I [TS]

00:03:38   think you'll rock the brain [TS]

00:03:40   yeah alright i agree it's already got [TS]

00:03:41   the earring i remember they're gonna be [TS]

00:03:44   doing and ian mckellen and patrick [TS]

00:03:45   stewart thing where they keep swapping [TS]

00:03:46   roles every other day of shooting just [TS]

00:03:49   keep it alive interesting always in [TS]

00:03:50   mcallen this one because I sort of feel [TS]

00:03:52   like he doesn't have a lock enough [TS]

00:03:53   science fiction franchises ya didn't eat [TS]

00:03:57   there has to be an egot for fantasy [TS]

00:03:59   franchises so that he can he can win [TS]

00:04:01   because at this point he's got the x-men [TS]

00:04:03   he's got that he's got the Lord of the [TS]

00:04:05   Rings thing going on [TS]

00:04:06   yeah why not or you know you could throw [TS]

00:04:08   bonding portion Connery since he penis [TS]

00:04:10   that on the action and was just in the [TS]

00:04:12   league of extraordinary gentlemen I [TS]

00:04:14   think he retired after that wisely [TS]

00:04:15   probably have probably so yeah crying [TS]

00:04:18   big Scottish castle somewhere capital so [TS]

00:04:22   so in addition to those three other [TS]

00:04:26   returning original stars anthony daniels [TS]

00:04:30   because you know 30 Daniels literally [TS]

00:04:33   hasn't done nothing apple this is all he [TS]

00:04:35   does i love you you're great at it [TS]

00:04:38   he's so good and could never have been [TS]

00:04:40   played by anyone else but you it's it's [TS]

00:04:42   hilarious because it's always by anyone [TS]

00:04:44   else I understand that that the guy who [TS]

00:04:47   played miles on Frasier they had to be [TS]

00:04:49   david Hyde Pierce epi [TS]

00:04:51   Jim Parsons would be oh no well what is [TS]

00:04:54   it like Anthony Daniels like laid the [TS]

00:04:56   groundwork for those to have a career [TS]

00:04:58   they should send him a fruit basket [TS]

00:05:00   I'm just saying that I once got like a [TS]

00:05:01   terrible audiobook I think the i want to [TS]

00:05:04   say like the dark Empire comic book and [TS]

00:05:06   Anthony Daniels is playing see-through [TS]

00:05:08   beyond that there were no other cast [TS]

00:05:10   members it but damn he is not gonna let [TS]

00:05:12   somebody else play c-3po it's his [TS]

00:05:15   character he staked it out [TS]

00:05:17   yeah so we lost it with motion capture [TS]

00:05:20   it'll fit back into the suit [TS]

00:05:22   well with that tells you that would have [TS]

00:05:23   been the last limiting factor for oh I'm [TS]

00:05:26   telling you Jim Parsons or or david Hyde [TS]

00:05:29   Pierce so go see Lisa's already fantasy [TS]

00:05:32   casting it's amazing what you know it's [TS]

00:05:34   a superpower Soviet there will be other [TS]

00:05:37   drugs so so also also I let's see who [TS]

00:05:42   also the other continuing Chewbacca [TS]

00:05:44   right Peter may you and and r2d2 Kenny [TS]

00:05:49   Baker because it wouldn't be the same [TS]

00:05:51   and let me finger was inside a [TS]

00:05:54   campaigner shake your most mysterious [TS]

00:05:55   like what at this point what is he doing [TS]

00:05:58   exactly [TS]

00:05:58   yeah nobody can wiggle that suit anybody [TS]

00:06:02   uh-huh he just makes it have such [TS]

00:06:04   personality it's an apple is he gonna is [TS]

00:06:06   there going to be a physical r2d2 onset [TS]

00:06:08   a lot of the time I figured they were [TS]

00:06:09   just cg him entirely [TS]

00:06:11   how dare you never never I'm just going [TS]

00:06:15   on pad on recent history [TS]

00:06:16   I feel like that you have upgrading from [TS]

00:06:18   windows XP but that's all he doesn't [TS]

00:06:20   want in episode 7just spends the entire [TS]

00:06:22   time you know her cheating on windows [TS]

00:06:26   yep he's come on and what you have much [TS]

00:06:30   of a mac is any droid on that is that [TS]

00:06:33   what you want to be running [TS]

00:06:35   yeah you've connected things that should [TS]

00:06:38   never be connected police other that [TS]

00:06:40   they're way too many accessories that [TS]

00:06:42   they didn't have to add onto r2d2 get [TS]

00:06:44   word Apple Design droid you basically [TS]

00:06:47   have to keep that you have to buy that [TS]

00:06:48   probe thing you have to buy the jet pack [TS]

00:06:50   it up to buy the laser important you'd [TS]

00:06:53   be supporting an exciting new democracy [TS]

00:06:55   its commerce and exciting democracy [TS]

00:06:57   because I'm Betty the Empire probably [TS]

00:06:58   had first controls and state-sponsored [TS]

00:07:00   industry and in and in an apple-designed [TS]

00:07:03   r2d2 world you would [TS]

00:07:05   the free market would be glorious have [TS]

00:07:07   you seen a Soviet design TV set [TS]

00:07:10   that's not the height of design and [TS]

00:07:11   function that's all I'm saying so in [TS]

00:07:13   addition to those so let's start there [TS]

00:07:15   let's start before we get into the new [TS]

00:07:17   actors are I wanted to talk about the [TS]

00:07:19   returning actors you know this was all [TS]

00:07:21   sort of speculation when we talked about [TS]

00:07:23   it when disney bought lucasfilm and said [TS]

00:07:26   that would be more star wars movies but [TS]

00:07:29   i'm interested what you guys think about [TS]

00:07:31   the prospect now that it's it's clear [TS]

00:07:34   that you know we're gonna see 30 years [TS]

00:07:38   later we're going to see Han Solo and [TS]

00:07:41   Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker again [TS]

00:07:43   and I'm I'm just you know that's that to [TS]

00:07:46   me seems to be I would actually say a [TS]

00:07:48   bigger deal than like the existence of [TS]

00:07:51   the prequels because now you're not [TS]

00:07:53   going to be able to look at return of [TS]

00:07:54   the jedi and say and that's the last we [TS]

00:07:56   ever solve them and I think that's I [TS]

00:07:58   think that's kind of a big deal i think [TS]

00:08:01   it's a huge deal [TS]

00:08:03   um I realize that this they're also [TS]

00:08:05   nuking all of the continuity that [TS]

00:08:07   they've spent the last 20 years building [TS]

00:08:09   like all the time of these on novels and [TS]

00:08:11   it got that yeah so they killed they [TS]

00:08:15   killed Chewbacca and the Expanded [TS]

00:08:16   Universe and brothers movie so so yeah [TS]

00:08:19   thank you lovey [TS]

00:08:20   so has anyone check on timothy zahn is [TS]

00:08:22   he doing ok you see actually in the [TS]

00:08:24   video and now it's ok alright i'm [TS]

00:08:27   announcing that he or you can call the [TS]

00:08:29   expanding universe though it took is [TS]

00:08:30   nuking it there just telling it out [TS]

00:08:32   there being are being selective but to [TS]

00:08:35   get back to but to get off your cases [TS]

00:08:36   original point on I don't know if I want [TS]

00:08:40   to see these people 30 years later and [TS]

00:08:42   the reason I say that is in my head [TS]

00:08:45   they're all the age that they were when [TS]

00:08:46   i first watched that blew my world open [TS]

00:08:48   and I kind of don't want to see the [TS]

00:08:50   ravages of time and I'm kind of dreading [TS]

00:08:52   it as well and not for the same reason [TS]

00:08:54   though it's not so much that I don't [TS]

00:08:56   want to see them although i understand [TS]

00:08:57   that perspective it's mostly because I'm [TS]

00:08:59   here's what I'm kind of dreading with [TS]

00:09:02   this i'm dreading being in the theater [TS]

00:09:03   and each time one of the returning [TS]

00:09:04   characters comes on the screen a bunch [TS]

00:09:06   of people applaud like I don't want to [TS]

00:09:08   be I don't want to be about them [TS]

00:09:10   I don't want person making the movie to [TS]

00:09:12   leave room for that applause I want to [TS]

00:09:14   see new stories in the same universe and [TS]

00:09:16   maybe they could have cameos but [TS]

00:09:18   I don't I want them to hand the baton [TS]

00:09:20   over i'm not that I'm rooting for Adam [TS]

00:09:22   to divert like I would have been just as [TS]

00:09:24   I would have felt better if they were no [TS]

00:09:26   returning characters not just not [TS]

00:09:28   because I think they're gonna ruin the [TS]

00:09:30   characters anything it's just that I [TS]

00:09:31   feel like the way down the the way down [TS]

00:09:34   this first movie with these with these [TS]

00:09:36   expectations about having to either tie [TS]

00:09:38   off old story lines or continual [TS]

00:09:40   storyline since their their time they [TS]

00:09:43   did their thing there time is over and i [TS]

00:09:45   don't like the tri don't like the trend [TS]

00:09:47   I don't like the trend of nostalgia is [TS]

00:09:48   fanservice though because I feel like [TS]

00:09:50   pop culture has kind of become inundated [TS]

00:09:51   with that its kind of horrifying to open [TS]

00:09:54   up a browser and see 50 articles on the [TS]

00:09:56   10th anniversary of mean girls for [TS]

00:09:57   example it's a movie it happened 10 [TS]

00:10:00   years ago I get that a lot of people [TS]

00:10:01   quoted but come on ten years is not that [TS]

00:10:03   long in the great span of things and I [TS]

00:10:06   feel like we as a culture like like to [TS]

00:10:08   ceaselessly dwell on these insignificant [TS]

00:10:10   landmarks or and here's what they're [TS]

00:10:12   doing now or or so on and so forth and [TS]

00:10:15   and I sort i sort of feel like it's I [TS]

00:10:17   sort of feel like this is where its fine [TS]

00:10:18   with that is it's you love these guys [TS]

00:10:20   back in 1978 so you know here they are [TS]

00:10:24   but we're presuming that the main story [TS]

00:10:27   is about these characters as opposed to [TS]

00:10:29   their being sort of a passing the [TS]

00:10:30   torture basically this is this these [TS]

00:10:32   three characters with these four [TS]

00:10:34   characters are there to sort of root us [TS]

00:10:35   in this world and refresh us it's not [TS]

00:10:38   gonna be a reboot so much but it's [TS]

00:10:40   saying we're going to pretend though the [TS]

00:10:42   prequels were the peak the prequels [TS]

00:10:43   we're gonna have this continuity of this [TS]

00:10:46   movies that everybody agrees that they [TS]

00:10:48   like and I like I like the impression [TS]

00:10:52   that i get from this that they're going [TS]

00:10:54   to write this like it's a play which is [TS]

00:10:57   the way that really every single movie [TS]

00:10:59   science fiction used to be done where [TS]

00:11:01   there's going to be a beginning a middle [TS]

00:11:02   and an end with a linear storyline it [TS]

00:11:05   would be I would be kind of interested [TS]

00:11:08   if they were making movie set in the [TS]

00:11:10   Expanded Universe but my big worry there [TS]

00:11:13   is there would be like like other [TS]

00:11:15   franchise movies where you feel like [TS]

00:11:17   you're seeing the middle of every movie [TS]

00:11:19   is the middle of a story because they [TS]

00:11:22   want to basically set up the next movie [TS]

00:11:24   with different characters and also pick [TS]

00:11:26   up stuff from a previous movie that you [TS]

00:11:27   didn't see that had a different name [TS]

00:11:29   it's the comic-book model that you're [TS]

00:11:31   talking about whatever Stanley's [TS]

00:11:32   family's famous a prism every comic book [TS]

00:11:35   issue a summons first comic book issue [TS]

00:11:36   every kind of pushes someone's last [TS]

00:11:37   competition but that's the challenge of [TS]

00:11:39   time the story and movies and and and [TS]

00:11:42   movies have begun to pick up that model [TS]

00:11:43   to the right i mean there they've always [TS]

00:11:45   fundamentally been episodes though is [TS]

00:11:47   the thing right like this going back to [TS]

00:11:49   the initial you know pitch by lucas is [TS]

00:11:51   these are you know the serials right [TS]

00:11:53   which were continuing story is back in [TS]

00:11:55   the you know the ones that he was [TS]

00:11:56   harkening back to they were these [TS]

00:11:58   lengthy continuing stories that ran you [TS]

00:12:01   know every weekend granted they were [TS]

00:12:02   shorter you know we're talking like [TS]

00:12:03   20-30 minutes and I cases but you know [TS]

00:12:06   they're what he was telling an ongoing [TS]

00:12:07   series of adventures not i want to stick [TS]

00:12:10   up for the the older cast this point [TS]

00:12:12   because you know well there has been a [TS]

00:12:14   lot of talking and i'm sure we will [TS]

00:12:16   discuss the the issues of the diversity [TS]

00:12:18   or lack thereof among the cast [TS]

00:12:20   I at least want to say hey I can't old [TS]

00:12:22   people have adventures [TS]

00:12:24   I mean I i kinda want to root for them [TS]

00:12:26   like it's good to you [TS]

00:12:27   I like the idea of students on an [TS]

00:12:30   Indiana Jones movie right i did but you [TS]

00:12:33   know what that had this one doesn't have [TS]

00:12:35   George Lucas so I was talking about the [TS]

00:12:37   Last Crusade the good one Harrison Ford [TS]

00:12:39   was not the problem with the kids [TS]

00:12:42   Crystal Skull you know he his age was [TS]

00:12:45   not did that bastard and I was like I'm [TS]

00:12:46   saying that there are movies with old [TS]

00:12:48   people men anyway having adventures but [TS]

00:12:50   and and it's not like I'm against these [TS]

00:12:52   people if if she I would almost feel [TS]

00:12:54   better if the if the old people are the [TS]

00:12:56   only people sitting in that big circle [TS]

00:12:57   of ikea couches talking to each other [TS]

00:12:59   because it's clear that they have a [TS]

00:13:01   bunch of young actors who are going to [TS]

00:13:03   be in this movie and so it's not like if [TS]

00:13:05   you just want to have these guys have a [TS]

00:13:06   bunch of ventures old people that's [TS]

00:13:08   that's fine i'll i'll see that story [TS]

00:13:09   it's just like it's Reds in space [TS]

00:13:12   I feel like this there's another story [TS]

00:13:14   with these young actors they have to [TS]

00:13:15   tell and it is incredible balancing act [TS]

00:13:17   between how much do we put the old [TS]

00:13:19   people on so it doesn't feel like [TS]

00:13:20   they're just talking cameos versus how [TS]

00:13:22   much they taking spotlight with everyone [TS]

00:13:24   wants to see Luke Skywalker but what [TS]

00:13:25   about these new guys and like I it's a [TS]

00:13:27   really difficult balance its it really [TS]

00:13:29   amps up i think the degree of difficulty [TS]

00:13:31   of making this into a good movie but [TS]

00:13:33   throwing those guys in the neck the [TS]

00:13:34   rumor is that Michael Arndt script was [TS]

00:13:37   focused mostly on the new generation [TS]

00:13:38   with a hat tip to the old and that the [TS]

00:13:41   JJ Abrams [TS]

00:13:42   and Lawrence Kasdan version that is now [TS]

00:13:45   the one that they're gonna do the old [TS]

00:13:48   cast members are much more involved than [TS]

00:13:49   they were with you know you would think [TS]

00:13:51   if Joss Whedon was doing you would think [TS]

00:13:53   at least one or two of them would die [TS]

00:13:54   right [TS]

00:13:55   sure i would wrap that would wrap them [TS]

00:13:56   up that would wrap up their story they [TS]

00:13:57   would die heroically they would die as a [TS]

00:13:59   sacrifice maybe one of them would have [TS]

00:14:01   troubles and died tragically but like in [TS]

00:14:03   any way you gotta tie those off [TS]

00:14:05   yeah and then that and that's not a bad [TS]

00:14:07   thing I i wanna i mean i actually am [TS]

00:14:10   sort of Lisa on the fact that I think I [TS]

00:14:13   you know how people talk about how the [TS]

00:14:16   prequel sort of ruined their childhood [TS]

00:14:18   memories of star wars because now [TS]

00:14:20   they've got these prequels in the way [TS]

00:14:21   what I think I think this is a riskier [TS]

00:14:24   move and I actually think this is gonna [TS]

00:14:26   have a much higher degree of a chance of [TS]

00:14:28   success than that then the prequels in [TS]

00:14:30   hindsight being the prequels were [TS]

00:14:31   failures I i I'm fairly positive that [TS]

00:14:33   this movie is going to be at the very [TS]

00:14:34   least fine and maybe good you know right [TS]

00:14:39   i like James has proven i think with a [TS]

00:14:41   Star Trek movies especially that he's a [TS]

00:14:42   he's a capable guy I think he [TS]

00:14:44   understands why Star Wars popular which [TS]

00:14:47   George Lucas doesn't like we already [TS]

00:14:50   made what we might read with the best [TS]

00:14:52   Star Wars movie in here in which star [TS]

00:14:53   trek into darkness right so so but but i [TS]

00:14:56   think it's risky and it's for something [TS]

00:14:58   that the that i mentioned at least [TS]

00:15:00   mentioned earlier I think it's risky [TS]

00:15:01   because you know the prequels backfilled [TS]

00:15:04   what you thought of this universe but [TS]

00:15:07   now they're going to tell us this is [TS]

00:15:09   what happened to han and Leia and Luke [TS]

00:15:10   and that's it [TS]

00:15:12   this is this is them 30 years later and [TS]

00:15:14   that's I feel like that is a bigger [TS]

00:15:16   gamble because everybody has been able [TS]

00:15:19   to kind of imagine what the rest of the [TS]

00:15:20   story was and now they're gonna show us [TS]

00:15:22   what the rest of the story was for those [TS]

00:15:24   characters and that that's scary [TS]

00:15:26   well they skipping skipping 30 years so [TS]

00:15:28   we can still imagine was 30 years recall [TS]

00:15:30   what it's like you did that that story [TS]

00:15:34   ended with ok so they've just like this [TS]

00:15:36   they disrupted the wedding in the back [TS]

00:15:37   of the bus now what happens that really [TS]

00:15:39   was the end of the story where the point [TS]

00:15:42   was now we don't know what happens but [TS]

00:15:44   they've done something that they wanted [TS]

00:15:45   to do and yet the idea that they have [TS]

00:15:48   defeated the enemy that they needed to [TS]

00:15:50   be defeated now anything can happen from [TS]

00:15:52   this point on and we're not gonna tell [TS]

00:15:53   you what that is but by the by the [TS]

00:15:55   buildup in the [TS]

00:15:56   music at the very end we are implying [TS]

00:15:58   that positive things happen and now [TS]

00:15:59   you're right if we if we if we rack back [TS]

00:16:02   40 years later find out that [TS]

00:16:03   yeah turns out that layout turned to the [TS]

00:16:06   dark side and killed a whole bunch of [TS]

00:16:08   people and hand was like actually [TS]

00:16:10   locking carbon for the past 25 years and [TS]

00:16:13   he's the only person who knew the access [TS]

00:16:14   codes to release the oh man you just [TS]

00:16:17   ruined the opti uplifting ending that we [TS]

00:16:19   had grown man I've got two words for you [TS]

00:16:21   trade negotiation as long as I keep that [TS]

00:16:25   away [TS]

00:16:26   it's not as if I'm saying that the what [TS]

00:16:28   we're gonna get is something with some [TS]

00:16:29   fulfilling but it's going to be [TS]

00:16:31   definitive and that means that all the [TS]

00:16:34   other kind of dreams of what the story [TS]

00:16:36   could have been will be collapsed 21 and [TS]

00:16:40   which is true but we've also done the [TS]

00:16:42   same we've already compartmentalize the [TS]

00:16:43   previous and I reserve the right to [TS]

00:16:45   totally cut these off of their crappy to [TS]

00:16:47   sure doesn't those middle movies will [TS]

00:16:49   stand on their own forever and I don't [TS]

00:16:51   care what comes before them or what [TS]

00:16:52   comes after me for crying out loud is [TS]

00:16:53   all sorts of novels that I probably [TS]

00:16:55   think you're terrible that came after i [TS]

00:16:56   just didn't read them and if i had read [TS]

00:16:58   them i would be like well i'm not paying [TS]

00:16:59   attention that there was this little [TS]

00:17:00   story that's good [TS]

00:17:01   ever you know it's the roommates the [TS]

00:17:03   removal of mystery that i have the [TS]

00:17:05   problem with that was my problem the [TS]

00:17:06   first three movies is that it took all [TS]

00:17:08   the mystery way from Darth Vader because [TS]

00:17:09   you think about episodes 4 5 and 6 and [TS]

00:17:11   you're like what the hell how does a man [TS]

00:17:13   turned out to be this half machine [TS]

00:17:15   hybrid with connections to an evil [TS]

00:17:17   sorcerer and you don't really get a good [TS]

00:17:18   answer to that and that's what makes the [TS]

00:17:21   earth better such a tragic and [TS]

00:17:22   interesting the removal of history the [TS]

00:17:24   bigger problem is that it was sucky and [TS]

00:17:26   then you find out like episodes one [TS]

00:17:27   through three that while he's just kind [TS]

00:17:28   of a douche nozzle and you're like wait [TS]

00:17:31   what and how [TS]

00:17:34   wait why how that this guy because his [TS]

00:17:36   legs cut off somehow turns into a cyborg [TS]

00:17:38   and then Ben Kenobi turns out look like [TS]

00:17:39   a massive idiot retrospect because of [TS]

00:17:42   inexplicable scripture and decisions in [TS]

00:17:44   episode 3 blah blah blah and I kind of [TS]

00:17:46   don't want that to happen with episode 7 [TS]

00:17:48   through 9 where the mystery as to what [TS]

00:17:51   happens to han and Leia and everybody [TS]

00:17:53   else gets revealed I I don't want the [TS]

00:17:56   answers on because i don't want to I [TS]

00:17:58   don't want to risk the disappointment as [TS]

00:18:00   it were you may want to hide for the [TS]

00:18:01   next six years then you know it and then [TS]

00:18:05   again the other things I kind of don't [TS]

00:18:07   care as much like as I would have if [TS]

00:18:09   right if if I were a child or teenager [TS]

00:18:10   or younger person you know at this point [TS]

00:18:13   it's kind of a mess with something i [TS]

00:18:15   really like and i'll still go to the [TS]

00:18:18   movies and I'll probably look at them [TS]

00:18:19   and say okay what if what has been [TS]

00:18:21   updated to reflect the cinematic [TS]

00:18:23   sensibilities of the early 21st century [TS]

00:18:25   but I haven't you know I'm not burning [TS]

00:18:28   to find out what happened to the old [TS]

00:18:30   guard i am kind of interested to see if [TS]

00:18:33   they do manage to do a graceful [TS]

00:18:34   balancing act or perhaps these trees [TS]

00:18:36   movies transition away from the founders [TS]

00:18:38   of the New Republic whatever you want to [TS]

00:18:41   call it and into the people were like [TS]

00:18:42   okay yes that's great you took down the [TS]

00:18:45   Death Star blah blah blah you haven't [TS]

00:18:47   really done anything interesting last 25 [TS]

00:18:48   years sense so some out-of-the-way [TS]

00:18:50   grandpa this is time for Phase two turns [TS]

00:18:52   out they just kept the Empire running [TS]

00:18:54   all those years are like well the [TS]

00:18:55   infrastructure is already here we could [TS]

00:18:57   probably just slaughter sales area with [TS]

00:18:58   a rebranded I mean they they took a new [TS]

00:19:01   logo it was you know it's all rebranding [TS]

00:19:03   effort its agents of shield Hydra time [TS]

00:19:08   for a sponsor break and this one's for [TS]

00:19:10   the gentlemen this is for Harry's [TS]

00:19:15   Harry's is all about shaving Harry's was [TS]

00:19:18   sparked by a personal experience of one [TS]

00:19:21   of the hairies founders and e2 [TS]

00:19:23   emblematic of the experience that a lot [TS]

00:19:25   of us guys have dealt with he went to a [TS]

00:19:27   drugstore waited 10 minutes for someone [TS]

00:19:29   to unlock the case where the razors were [TS]

00:19:31   being held about a four pack of blades [TS]

00:19:33   and shaving cream [TS]

00:19:34   it was kind of a crappy experience he [TS]

00:19:36   walks out looks in his bag [TS]

00:19:38   he's gonna receive for 25 bucks with a [TS]

00:19:41   bunch of stuff that didn't speak to him [TS]

00:19:42   and thought there's gotta be a better [TS]

00:19:44   way to do shaving higher quality stuff a [TS]

00:19:47   better customer experience and that's [TS]

00:19:48   what hair is all about its focused on [TS]

00:19:50   providing guys a great shaving [TS]

00:19:52   experience for a fraction of the price [TS]

00:19:53   of their competitors half the price of [TS]

00:19:56   other razor blades when you get your [TS]

00:19:58   razors & harry's now it's got a [TS]

00:20:00   beautiful clean product design i've got [TS]

00:20:02   one of these Harry's razors is simple [TS]

00:20:05   its functional it's pretty it's not all [TS]

00:20:08   flashy and crazy it doesn't have like [TS]

00:20:10   extra grooves and and plastic bits that [TS]

00:20:14   have like wings and flames and all the [TS]

00:20:16   other kind of crazy comics you see with [TS]

00:20:17   the stuff they that are sold in in [TS]

00:20:19   regular stores its it's simple and it's [TS]

00:20:22   pretty nice metal handle really liked it [TS]

00:20:24   high-quality blades they have their own [TS]

00:20:26   factory in Germany high quality engineer [TS]

00:20:29   for sharpness and strength and their [TS]

00:20:31   half the price of say Gillette [TS]

00:20:34   convenience is a big thing with Harry's [TS]

00:20:37   to you by this stuff online it's super [TS]

00:20:39   easy it's shipped to your door you don't [TS]

00:20:41   have to worry about it when i go to my [TS]

00:20:43   local drugstore and I'm looking for [TS]

00:20:45   razors that you know a lot of times [TS]

00:20:47   they're they're missing from the shelves [TS]

00:20:49   like their whole sections where where [TS]

00:20:51   one of the refill blades that I might [TS]

00:20:53   want to get there just gone [TS]

00:20:55   I gotta come back later maybe they'll be [TS]

00:20:56   there then maybe they won't it's really [TS]

00:20:58   frustrating so i tried out Harry stuff [TS]

00:21:00   the blades are beautiful I i shave with [TS]

00:21:03   him today super smooth skin my wife was [TS]

00:21:05   really appreciating it when I came home [TS]

00:21:07   from work she's like wow still smooth [TS]

00:21:09   very nice high-quality blades [TS]

00:21:11   high-quality handle on the razor and [TS]

00:21:13   then there's that Harry's shaving cream [TS]

00:21:15   that comes with and I'm an unscented [TS]

00:21:17   shaving foam kind of guy i don't really [TS]

00:21:19   like a lot of sense the hair shaving [TS]

00:21:21   cream it's really nice and it's got a [TS]

00:21:23   smell and it's very light and a little [TS]

00:21:26   minty and quite pleasant so even [TS]

00:21:29   somebody like me who's super sensitive [TS]

00:21:30   about shaving cream that the hair [TS]

00:21:32   shaving cream is really nice and it's a [TS]

00:21:34   little in a little squeeze bottle it's [TS]

00:21:35   not one of those big cans that shoots [TS]

00:21:38   out foam little squeeze bottle and you [TS]

00:21:40   squeeze a little bit out and rub it into [TS]

00:21:42   your face and then you shave really nice [TS]

00:21:44   high quality stuff so if you want to [TS]

00:21:46   give it a try here's what you do go to [TS]

00:21:49   Harry's use the promo code smell that's [TS]

00:21:52   my last names now you'll save five bucks [TS]

00:21:55   on your first purchase Harry's dot-com [TS]

00:21:58   har ry s.com shipped to your door [TS]

00:22:02   high-quality shaving equipment great [TS]

00:22:05   prices check them out and thanks so much [TS]

00:22:08   to harry's for sponsoring the [TS]

00:22:09   uncomfortable and I would love it if [TS]

00:22:12   they dislike from fanservice thing like [TS]

00:22:13   it's just too bad that you walked ending [TS]

00:22:15   with the rest of the rainforest planted [TS]

00:22:16   after the rain of debris but you know [TS]

00:22:18   like if they did something like her [TS]

00:22:20   actually no consequences i don't have to [TS]

00:22:22   happen box of the sequel's i'm giving [TS]

00:22:24   this a thumbs up [TS]

00:22:25   yeah yeah thank you so so the positive [TS]

00:22:29   side is you know we're going to see [TS]

00:22:31   we're going to see Han Solo again I [TS]

00:22:33   don't you know there is we're gonna see [TS]

00:22:34   Princess Leia [TS]

00:22:35   Luke Skywalker get that there is that [TS]

00:22:37   that's the other way to look and see [TS]

00:22:39   Lando Calrissian between you gosh-darned [TS]

00:22:41   move this guy and he was very important [TS]

00:22:45   by the end of Jedi it seems very likely [TS]

00:22:46   from adams i'm assuming he's not holding [TS]

00:22:48   out for not holding out for a lot of [TS]

00:22:50   money or something [TS]

00:22:52   still getting cold 45 residuals probably [TS]

00:22:54   yes I think he would have been in much [TS]

00:22:56   better shape on Dancing with the Stars [TS]

00:22:57   Dancing with the Stars because you see [TS]

00:22:59   everything that picture on the homestead [TS]

00:23:02   han solo but you're Harrison Ford has [TS]

00:23:04   always been like ready to grade to pilot [TS]

00:23:06   a chopper for the entire rest of his [TS]

00:23:08   life [TS]

00:23:08   these other two guys were like you know [TS]

00:23:10   I'm we're kind of retired now we don't [TS]

00:23:11   necessarily have to work out that much [TS]

00:23:13   but when you started suddenly see the [TS]

00:23:15   carrie fisher and Mark Hamill are now [TS]

00:23:17   trim and looking good [TS]

00:23:19   like ok they're going to be in some sort [TS]

00:23:21   of a movie and it's not a direct to DVD [TS]

00:23:23   release so it must be star wars that [TS]

00:23:26   that's why i don't think that Billy Dee [TS]

00:23:28   Williams going to be in this one [TS]

00:23:29   yeah well we'll see just to Basle it's [TS]

00:23:32   actually addresses one of the big [TS]

00:23:33   criticisms about the casting wall when [TS]

00:23:35   we move from original flavor into the [TS]

00:23:38   new people they've added which is this [TS]

00:23:39   is a remarkably white male cast [TS]

00:23:41   yep I i was thinking about how how Star [TS]

00:23:45   Trek dodged the bullet on this one [TS]

00:23:46   because I mean I and part of it is the [TS]

00:23:48   increased awareness of this whole issue [TS]

00:23:49   in our little circle that we traveling [TS]

00:23:51   on the internet but the other thing is [TS]

00:23:52   like when Star Trek did the reboot they [TS]

00:23:54   dodged it more or less by saying well we [TS]

00:23:57   didn't make up these characters these [TS]

00:23:58   were established characters and this is [TS]

00:23:59   how many females there are and when I [TS]

00:24:00   was thinking about that i thought about [TS]

00:24:01   Battlestar it's like well they have the [TS]

00:24:03   same situation well here's the [TS]

00:24:04   characters is what they are they just [TS]

00:24:06   said no actually we're going to change [TS]

00:24:07   starbucks to a woman and it wasn't that [TS]

00:24:08   big of a deal to boomer was also carry [TS]

00:24:10   out a changed woman is that sound like [TS]

00:24:12   and so that that that cuts in Star Trek [TS]

00:24:15   did it no one called them on oh you [TS]

00:24:17   didn't change spark into a woman right [TS]

00:24:18   there like what these are the starter [TS]

00:24:20   characters you have to go but when [TS]

00:24:21   introducing new characters that's an [TS]

00:24:23   opportunity to like that I think that's [TS]

00:24:25   why they're getting slammed this is like [TS]

00:24:27   you know it HSP it just reads is really [TS]

00:24:30   retrogressive to me that it's all its [TS]

00:24:32   most it's one woman and however many [TS]

00:24:34   dudes and it was an awfully white cast [TS]

00:24:36   picture and it's not like there's any [TS]

00:24:39   lack of talent and I mention this to [TS]

00:24:43   film photos will Lisa it was a long time [TS]

00:24:45   ago in a galaxy far far away before [TS]

00:24:48   not that well they do still have slavery [TS]

00:24:50   on these planets so that there are you [TS]

00:24:52   know [TS]

00:24:52   oh my god did with the setting and [TS]

00:24:55   everything I know the thing about Star [TS]

00:24:57   Trek actually when i noticed watching [TS]

00:24:59   star trek into darkness is that they [TS]

00:25:01   introduced Carol Marcus in the second [TS]

00:25:03   movie because they realize they they [TS]

00:25:04   needed another woman and the crew and [TS]

00:25:06   that is she [TS]

00:25:07   it's implied at the end that she's now [TS]

00:25:08   part of the crew and they will bring her [TS]

00:25:10   back because the fact is that original [TS]

00:25:12   Star Trek cast had one woman in it and [TS]

00:25:15   so that was kind of a problem so you can [TS]

00:25:18   actually see them kind of grappling with [TS]

00:25:20   that problem and trying to introduce [TS]

00:25:22   other characters from corners of their [TS]

00:25:23   cannon just to get a little more balance [TS]

00:25:27   in some way but we don't know about the [TS]

00:25:29   new set of Star Trek Star Wars actressy [TS]

00:25:32   I did it i'm gonna get kicked by people [TS]

00:25:34   that we do what we don't know is what [TS]

00:25:35   the balance is we've been given a list [TS]

00:25:37   so we've got we've got what I don't know [TS]

00:25:40   how to pronounce all these names John [TS]

00:25:41   boyega is that right way got from attack [TS]

00:25:45   the block [TS]

00:25:46   Daisy Ridley Adam driver from girls [TS]

00:25:49   which is that makes me laugh [TS]

00:25:50   oscar isaac a famous motion-capture [TS]

00:25:53   performance of node andy serkis dumb [TS]

00:25:57   Domhnall Gleeson and of course the [TS]

00:26:00   famous classic actor max pondside oh but [TS]

00:26:03   we don't we don't know what the balance [TS]

00:26:05   of this cast is and although we look at [TS]

00:26:07   that we say wow there's only one woman [TS]

00:26:09   and I and there is only one non-white [TS]

00:26:13   actor in that group our oscar isaac is I [TS]

00:26:16   believe our Hispanic hispanic and latino [TS]

00:26:18   it ok but so here's the thing what what [TS]

00:26:20   if the what if the three main characters [TS]

00:26:23   in this our John boyega Daisy Ridley and [TS]

00:26:26   Adam driver and it's a black man a woman [TS]

00:26:28   and a white man then if they are the [TS]

00:26:31   three main characters this movie seems [TS]

00:26:33   more diverse you know it's not like but [TS]

00:26:36   but it is true that the seven people [TS]

00:26:38   they announced our it's not a [TS]

00:26:40   particularly diverse group but you know [TS]

00:26:42   if John boyega is the lead [TS]

00:26:44   there's a weather big deal to that they [TS]

00:26:46   release this lesson like that's [TS]

00:26:47   everything Lando's on list all he can [TS]

00:26:49   have a cameo it's like you figure if he [TS]

00:26:50   was going to be in the movie would be on [TS]

00:26:51   this list like they didn't listen extras [TS]

00:26:53   they didn't list like you know Imperial [TS]

00:26:55   triple people that they're holding [TS]

00:26:57   people back specifically for canada i [TS]

00:26:59   mean it it could be into ever [TS]

00:27:01   first female so I was joking that the [TS]

00:27:03   genius about pacific rim is that [TS]

00:27:04   Guillermo del Toro sold the movie as [TS]

00:27:06   handsome Charlie Hunnam takes off shirt [TS]

00:27:08   the beginning of the movie and then goes [TS]

00:27:10   in fights with giant robots and the [TS]

00:27:12   movie actually made was a black man and [TS]

00:27:14   his surrogate asian daughter managed to [TS]

00:27:17   work some heavy emotional stuff before [TS]

00:27:18   saving the world so they want with giant [TS]

00:27:21   robot so I feel like it and it was and [TS]

00:27:24   what was interesting was when you looked [TS]

00:27:25   at pacific rim was marketed it was [TS]

00:27:27   handsome Charlie Hunnam will go and [TS]

00:27:28   fight monsters with robots and then [TS]

00:27:30   again I remind you the movie as African [TS]

00:27:33   if you're handsome black man [TS]

00:27:36   oh god so handsome handsome black man [TS]

00:27:37   and is a diet and his adopted asian [TS]

00:27:40   daughter work out their emotional issues [TS]

00:27:42   and go fight and go fight aliens and [TS]

00:27:44   robots and if he--if Star Wars is using [TS]

00:27:46   that tactic where they're selling it as [TS]

00:27:48   a fan boys this is the kind of [TS]

00:27:51   comfortable nerdery cast that you can [TS]

00:27:52   get used to and then the movie turns out [TS]

00:27:54   to be and some black guy and his [TS]

00:27:56   kick-ass female companion do interesting [TS]

00:27:59   things in the galaxy like my hat is off [TS]

00:28:02   to stars if that's how they do it but i [TS]

00:28:04   think that when you're handed the keys [TS]

00:28:06   to a huge franchise this isn't just a [TS]

00:28:08   creative endeavor there there are [TS]

00:28:09   probably really specific business [TS]

00:28:11   benchmarks they have to hit and big [TS]

00:28:13   studios tend to be really concerned [TS]

00:28:15   about things like casting and marketing [TS]

00:28:17   and and creative product and what [TS]

00:28:18   they're going to do is look at the [TS]

00:28:19   bottom line and say what is more [TS]

00:28:21   saleable a white space captain and you [TS]

00:28:25   know his crew of bro Himes or somebody [TS]

00:28:28   else [TS]

00:28:28   it reminds me of the brian michael [TS]

00:28:30   bendis interview i tweeted today where [TS]

00:28:32   he points out that little kids are [TS]

00:28:34   showing up to see him in handmade Miles [TS]

00:28:35   Morales costumes because nobody has [TS]

00:28:38   thought it's a good idea to license and [TS]

00:28:39   manufacture the spider-man costume for [TS]

00:28:41   the half hispanic for had a half Latino [TS]

00:28:44   half black spider-man which to me is [TS]

00:28:46   crazy like that should be too given but [TS]

00:28:48   you do have these cross-marketing [TS]

00:28:50   considerations to play you know it's it [TS]

00:28:52   which is why again but yet but the look [TS]

00:28:54   at--look at pacific was presented as [TS]

00:28:56   opposed to what it is and I question [TS]

00:28:58   whether star wars going on the same same [TS]

00:29:00   tack that's absolutely true [TS]

00:29:01   there's a long list of you compare movie [TS]

00:29:04   posters of comedies dramas action movies [TS]

00:29:07   that have non-white non-male leads and [TS]

00:29:10   they've been you of course they take out [TS]

00:29:12   the they they pull out the white males [TS]

00:29:14   as [TS]

00:29:14   for the movie posters even though [TS]

00:29:16   they're basically cameos and supporting [TS]

00:29:18   characters but i think that we we can [TS]

00:29:20   make this we should make the mistake of [TS]

00:29:22   extrapolating the entire movie out of [TS]

00:29:24   this one photo in this one list i do [TS]

00:29:26   think this was the photo they had to [TS]

00:29:28   release because they knew that they will [TS]

00:29:30   get every hashtag every trending topic [TS]

00:29:33   for two days just on the strength of [TS]

00:29:36   here all the original cast members from [TS]

00:29:38   the original over the Holy trilogy and [TS]

00:29:40   then later on we can talk we can tell [TS]

00:29:42   you about these people that you may or [TS]

00:29:43   may not have heard of but it's you're [TS]

00:29:46   absolutely right thing if they don't [TS]

00:29:47   diversify the cast then they're not [TS]

00:29:49   going to start creating new legends that [TS]

00:29:51   a whole new generation is going to feel [TS]

00:29:53   connected to and grew up with [TS]

00:29:54   i mean i-i I would like to think that i [TS]

00:29:57   will fell in love with the character of [TS]

00:29:59   Han Solo and I fell in love with the [TS]

00:30:01   character of Indiana Jones [TS]

00:30:02   for more reasons than he is simply a [TS]

00:30:04   white male in America which I can [TS]

00:30:06   definitely find a connection to but [TS]

00:30:07   there's here is absolutely right now [TS]

00:30:09   there you have no idea what it's like to [TS]

00:30:11   not see you're suddenly the faces you [TS]

00:30:13   see in the mirror every morning [TS]

00:30:14   represented in popular culture so Star [TS]

00:30:17   Wars has a bigger role to play than [TS]

00:30:18   simply being a mega blockbuster movie [TS]

00:30:20   and I just hope they take advantage of [TS]

00:30:21   that opportunity [TS]

00:30:22   yeah princess leia was me as a little [TS]

00:30:24   girl I dresses are for Halloween every [TS]

00:30:26   year and I could identify with her and [TS]

00:30:30   you know and i want to point out that [TS]

00:30:32   I'm extraordinary privilege in terms of [TS]

00:30:34   pop culture relative to say women of [TS]

00:30:36   color or or people who are not cisgender [TS]

00:30:39   or anything like that um the reason I'm [TS]

00:30:42   not so willing to give this photograph [TS]

00:30:44   that the the benefit of the doubt is [TS]

00:30:46   again this is an image machine they [TS]

00:30:48   there they depict a photograph that to [TS]

00:30:49   send a very specific message and that [TS]

00:30:51   was a pretty carefully chosen photograph [TS]

00:30:53   and the message they're sending is hey [TS]

00:30:55   hey hey fans its more of what you know i [TS]

00:30:58   love it and that I feel like that's the [TS]

00:31:00   message they're sending I I will concede [TS]

00:31:02   to everybody else's point that the [TS]

00:31:04   message I'm perceiving may not be the [TS]

00:31:06   final product but I'm not filled with a [TS]

00:31:09   lot of optimism just based on you know [TS]

00:31:11   11 photo I mean I I sympathize with all [TS]

00:31:15   those things and I i guess like you [TS]

00:31:17   Jason I'm I'm more willing to sort of [TS]

00:31:19   take a step back and see what the plans [TS]

00:31:22   are there are still some rumors that [TS]

00:31:24   there are major parts that have not [TS]

00:31:25   announced including a major female part [TS]

00:31:28   so i don't know i mean i agree that it [TS]

00:31:31   would be I I'm much in favor of seeing a [TS]

00:31:34   more diverse cast here for all the [TS]

00:31:35   reasons that have been mentioned but you [TS]

00:31:38   know at the same time I think there's a [TS]

00:31:40   lot of there's a lot of reasons not you [TS]

00:31:42   you know panic about like one photograph [TS]

00:31:46   and gank assless that's been announced [TS]

00:31:48   so yeah also I I don't know how much [TS]

00:31:51   that's going to change you know based on [TS]

00:31:53   what we say either so there's a question [TS]

00:31:56   of that as well but I i don't know i'm [TS]

00:31:59   excited by a lot of the people who are [TS]

00:32:00   in the cast for their talents if you [TS]

00:32:03   know if nothing else I think you know [TS]

00:32:05   John boyega everything I've heard about [TS]

00:32:07   him [TS]

00:32:07   sounds awesome he sounds like a great [TS]

00:32:09   actor I've not seen attack the block but [TS]

00:32:11   I've heard nothing but good things about [TS]

00:32:12   it and about his role in that I a lot of [TS]

00:32:16   the other folks we you know there are [TS]

00:32:19   some people like I think our Daisy [TS]

00:32:21   riddle that we don't we don't know [TS]

00:32:22   anything about her really because she [TS]

00:32:23   hasn't been in much which is interesting [TS]

00:32:26   i think in and of itself in terms of [TS]

00:32:28   casting somebody for a role this this [TS]

00:32:30   pivotal who is not a known quantity i [TS]

00:32:32   mean that kind of harkens back to me you [TS]

00:32:34   know to the original movies for me much [TS]

00:32:37   less than the prequels in which case [TS]

00:32:39   they seem to really kind of we're gonna [TS]

00:32:40   rely more on star power in a lot of [TS]

00:32:43   those cases and it didn't really work [TS]

00:32:45   out for them but I think mainly what i [TS]

00:32:48   end up thinking about me is you know i'm [TS]

00:32:50   intrigued want to know what the story is [TS]

00:32:52   now right like that's where sort of [TS]

00:32:53   going to the gradation of steps where [TS]

00:32:54   it's like we new Star Wars back and [TS]

00:32:56   we're gonna make an episode 7 we knew [TS]

00:32:58   eventually the JJ Abrams going to direct [TS]

00:32:59   it now we know who's gonna be in it and [TS]

00:33:02   to me the big question is still what [TS]

00:33:04   story are we going to tell here you know [TS]

00:33:06   what is what is the story 30 years later [TS]

00:33:08   because I I again as I said earlier I [TS]

00:33:10   don't I don't mind the the older folks [TS]

00:33:13   in there i agree that it's a it's a [TS]

00:33:14   bigger risk because it looks much more [TS]

00:33:17   like the original movies but at the same [TS]

00:33:19   time I think you know the bigger the [TS]

00:33:21   risk the bigger the reward potentially I [TS]

00:33:23   mean it could be very good and in that [TS]

00:33:24   case you do have a potential touchstone [TS]

00:33:27   for not only new people you know who are [TS]

00:33:29   your kids who are entering the franchise [TS]

00:33:31   for the first time we're seeing these [TS]

00:33:32   movies like this on the big screen for [TS]

00:33:34   the first time but also those of us who [TS]

00:33:35   have enjoyed them for so many years so I [TS]

00:33:38   again as [TS]

00:33:39   as with every stage of the process I [TS]

00:33:40   think I end up feeling of falling into [TS]

00:33:42   the sort of cautiously optimistic pin [TS]

00:33:44   yeah I'm on that I'm sort of on the [TS]

00:33:46   fence in that I i see where Lisa's [TS]

00:33:48   coming from and I am a little bit [TS]

00:33:50   nervous for my first impression when I [TS]

00:33:52   saw the picture after being like oh my [TS]

00:33:55   god original cast was hey that's not it [TS]

00:33:59   it's like Daisy Ridley and Carrie Fisher [TS]

00:34:01   partying over on a couch together and [TS]

00:34:03   they're surrounded by white dudes and I [TS]

00:34:05   guess kathleen kennedy is kind of [TS]

00:34:07   hanging out in a chair but you can't [TS]

00:34:08   actually see her face she just she is [TS]

00:34:10   the Emperor and this position next one [TS]

00:34:12   of the weasleys also the Zapruder [TS]

00:34:17   filming of like what the significance of [TS]

00:34:19   where everybody is sitting o it is not [TS]

00:34:22   it's it's a it's a criminologist we're [TS]

00:34:25   talking about writing my was the [TS]

00:34:27   Minister of Agriculture not present at [TS]

00:34:29   the made a really easy one to call its [TS]

00:34:31   jayjay is next on solo because if you're [TS]

00:34:33   the director you get to sing song that's [TS]

00:34:35   right [TS]

00:34:35   oh yeah also they have a connection [TS]

00:34:37   think it was John you remember from our [TS]

00:34:38   when we saw that JJ Abrams a couple [TS]

00:34:40   years ago he sat down with him when he [TS]

00:34:43   like on the first movie he ever wrote [TS]

00:34:44   which was I think regarding Henry yes [TS]

00:34:47   yeah yeah so they are they're connected [TS]

00:34:49   was not a good movie sorry guys that has [TS]

00:34:52   a really bad movie but oh boy time for a [TS]

00:34:56   sponsor break i'd like to tell you about [TS]

00:34:58   our sponsor proflowers.com in a moment [TS]

00:35:01   but first i'm going to tell you a little [TS]

00:35:02   story because mother's day is coming up [TS]

00:35:06   and one of my great memories of time [TS]

00:35:10   that I made my mother really angry [TS]

00:35:11   my brother and I decided to play catch [TS]

00:35:13   in the living room [TS]

00:35:14   I think I you got me why we would even [TS]

00:35:18   do such a stupid thing and I think we [TS]

00:35:20   were playing catch with something soft [TS]

00:35:22   but it didn't matter [TS]

00:35:23   there was a candy bowl with a lid that [TS]

00:35:27   my mother I think got for her [TS]

00:35:29   grandmother or maybe her [TS]

00:35:30   great-grandmother it was a family [TS]

00:35:32   heirloom was part of I think of family [TS]

00:35:35   China set [TS]

00:35:36   well you know what happened the ball hit [TS]

00:35:39   the thing and it fell on the floor and [TS]

00:35:42   it broke into a bunch of pieces however [TS]

00:35:46   because we don't want to get in trouble [TS]

00:35:47   my brother and i superglued that thing [TS]

00:35:50   back together into [TS]

00:35:52   it until it worked it was actually it [TS]

00:35:55   all fit together you would never know [TS]

00:35:57   that had broken other than all of the [TS]

00:36:00   lines all over it that indicated it had [TS]

00:36:03   been broken into pieces and superglued [TS]

00:36:05   together again my kids they'll never [TS]

00:36:08   notice those lines sure well of course [TS]

00:36:10   they noticed immediately and got really [TS]

00:36:12   really angry at us and I could laugh [TS]

00:36:16   about it now haha [TS]

00:36:17   who anyway I'm sure mom got a lot of [TS]

00:36:20   gray hairs from that so you have [TS]

00:36:22   probably got a story like that so thank [TS]

00:36:24   your mom for putting up with your [TS]

00:37:20   from amazon you just go to [TS]

00:37:21   proflowers.com and order so here's what [TS]

00:37:24   you do go to proflowers.com click the [TS]

00:37:26   little blue microphone in the top right [TS]

00:37:28   corner of the web page and type in [TS]

00:37:31   comfortable that's at proflowers.com [TS]

00:37:33   click the blue microphone type in [TS]

00:37:35   uncomfortable this deal expires soon so [TS]

00:37:38   make sure you order it today so we'll [TS]

00:37:40   get there to your mom before mother's [TS]

00:37:42   day and thanks proflowers for sponsoring [TS]

00:37:44   the uncomfortable and thanks mom for not [TS]

00:37:46   being too mad when we broke the candy [TS]

00:37:48   bowl was it was there any significance [TS]

00:37:50   to the fact that was black and white to [TS]

00:37:52   be honest before I i saw a description [TS]

00:37:54   of the photo i thought that this is a [TS]

00:37:56   vintage photo because there are no [TS]

00:37:57   laptops there were no other clothes were [TS]

00:38:00   very seventies all the furniture is very [TS]

00:38:02   70 and it's at Pinewood Studios is what [TS]

00:38:04   it was [TS]

00:38:05   supposed to evoke the feeling that you [TS]

00:38:06   had when you saw the behind-the-scenes [TS]

00:38:08   photos and documentaries of the original [TS]

00:38:09   trilogy because that was one of my first [TS]

00:38:12   exposure to pop culture's and child were [TS]

00:38:14   like PBS documentary somehow ilm work to [TS]

00:38:16   you also see still photos of you know [TS]

00:38:18   like Princess leaning against the [TS]

00:38:20   Millennium Falcon and laughing with [TS]

00:38:21   somebody and behind-the-scenes pictures [TS]

00:38:23   so maybe it was supposed to evoke that [TS]

00:38:25   feeling with look you're getting a [TS]

00:38:26   behind-the-scenes look and and just like [TS]

00:38:28   we've been giving you since the eighties [TS]

00:38:30   yeah it was meant to evoke this is all [TS]

00:38:32   meant to evoke the nostalgia of of this [TS]

00:38:36   period of the original of the original [TS]

00:38:38   series so we've got a black and white [TS]

00:38:39   picture without a lot of Technology and [TS]

00:38:42   we've got it you know they're shooting [TS]

00:38:44   the movie where they shot the original [TS]

00:38:45   films and that's this is all part of the [TS]

00:38:48   marketing thing [TS]

00:38:49   also I have to say I you know you plan [TS]

00:38:52   this sort of thing because I you're [TS]

00:38:54   about to shoot and people are gonna know [TS]

00:38:56   where these people are and they're gonna [TS]

00:38:58   figure it out so you want to take [TS]

00:38:59   control of the situation reminds me of [TS]

00:39:01   when you know they announced now they [TS]

00:39:04   announce who the new actors are who are [TS]

00:39:06   cast in Doctor Who like two days before [TS]

00:39:08   they do their location shooting because [TS]

00:39:09   as soon as they're on location [TS]

00:39:11   everybody's going to know it so you want [TS]

00:39:13   to get ahead of it and they announced [TS]

00:39:14   the Chewbacca's in the movie you know a [TS]

00:39:16   few days before that they say yeah they [TS]

00:39:18   expand you force play because it is that [TS]

00:39:21   it brings up the question so they just [TS]

00:39:22   laid today this is PR I mean this is PR [TS]

00:39:26   as its supposed to be so that that's [TS]

00:39:28   what's that's what's going on here at [TS]

00:39:30   having seen girls Adam driver i'm [TS]

00:39:32   fascinated by that bit of casting [TS]

00:39:33   because I think he's a very interesting [TS]

00:39:35   actor although again as you know with a [TS]

00:39:37   lot of casting you've got that you know [TS]

00:39:39   I attaching remember what their other [TS]

00:39:42   roles were like and then being like okay [TS]

00:39:44   just let's you know he will not be [TS]

00:39:46   playing the same character presumably as [TS]

00:39:50   his character on girls in Star Wars [TS]

00:39:52   because that would be really weird [TS]

00:39:53   although he could yeah he's the Jedi who [TS]

00:39:55   walks around without a shirt on all the [TS]

00:39:56   time [TS]

00:39:57   sure i would not have a problem with [TS]

00:39:59   that ninety i have a problem with what [TS]

00:40:03   is this luke why is the entire New Jedi [TS]

00:40:05   core service look it's a thing that time [TS]

00:40:07   I love that idea of a look at it [TS]

00:40:14   obviously haha fascinating fascinating [TS]

00:40:18   group but it makes sense to speculate [TS]

00:40:20   about any of these characters these [TS]

00:40:21   actors being under makeup for andy [TS]

00:40:24   serkis we should talk about that is but [TS]

00:40:26   he's going to play a motion-capture guy [TS]

00:40:27   mean he's a i would assume that he's [TS]

00:40:29   been a lot of live-action movies as an [TS]

00:40:31   actor he is NDE could be doing that but [TS]

00:40:33   there's also the possibility that he's [TS]

00:40:35   gonna be a completely cgi characters but [TS]

00:40:37   i think he looks right for the star wars [TS]

00:40:39   universe like him actually a kind of got [TS]

00:40:41   a he's got a he's got an email [TS]

00:40:43   german thing go and all right or even [TS]

00:40:44   like a bounty hunter I mean like this [TS]

00:40:46   and he looks like he's gonna looks [TS]

00:40:48   vaguely alien to that helps right that [TS]

00:40:50   this was thinking with Adam driver that [TS]

00:40:52   it's not like you can see oh oh you know [TS]

00:40:54   would be great in these movies and [TS]

00:40:56   Cassidy Jones oh my god I'm gonna need [TS]

00:40:59   to get done Jones movies Adam driver ID [TS]

00:41:02   to me sounds like he he he feels like [TS]

00:41:05   the bad guy i have to say i think that [TS]

00:41:07   is what is behind Lisa's any murder yeah [TS]

00:41:10   I think he's got my god i just looked up [TS]

00:41:12   a picture without Jones and he looks [TS]

00:41:13   like a terrifying Sith Lord [TS]

00:41:15   oh ya think he's the greatest he does he [TS]

00:41:18   does a lot of really great body might be [TS]

00:41:19   missing and you should be glad when he [TS]

00:41:21   was ambassador he was that helpful body [TS]

00:41:23   he was the body for oh god for a but [TS]

00:41:25   what's his favorite band album or a pin [TS]

00:41:27   hellboy on you know he's a really gifted [TS]

00:41:30   physical actor and he's also got a [TS]

00:41:32   reputation for being one of the nicest [TS]

00:41:34   people in the industry so that kind of [TS]

00:41:35   fits in with the star wars with because [TS]

00:41:37   Star Wars does the actors do seem to [TS]

00:41:39   have a culture of of actively not being [TS]

00:41:41   jerks [TS]

00:41:41   so I I feel like needs to work with [TS]

00:41:44   jerks [TS]

00:41:45   no I feel like you fit in culturally [TS]

00:41:46   with both the workplace and and the [TS]

00:41:48   fandom as it were and he's incredibly [TS]

00:41:50   gifted physically and he looks like [TS]

00:41:52   something from another planet and it [TS]

00:41:54   would be not it would be nice if you had [TS]

00:41:56   some pretty explicitly Ellen [TS]

00:41:59   alien-looking people or after to [TS]

00:42:00   convincingly channel this otherworldly [TS]

00:42:02   quality you know it could it could be [TS]

00:42:04   that all the new actors have blue skin [TS]

00:42:05   and this shot you know like every star [TS]

00:42:08   trek would say these guys are for and [TS]

00:42:09   makeup that's that's why it's in black [TS]

00:42:11   and white parts there in blue face [TS]

00:42:15   oh my god it's justwell avatar did so [TS]

00:42:17   well but of course [TS]

00:42:20   oh no no it's not channel after why is [TS]

00:42:23   blue such a big science fiction [TS]

00:42:24   because you don't run into a lot of [TS]

00:42:27   people with school probably not and DZ [TS]

00:42:32   what Stacy's last name we really these [TS]

00:42:35   she's what 19 20 she's pretty young [TS]

00:42:39   right like I that was the one that [TS]

00:42:41   struck me the most besides the fact that [TS]

00:42:43   she was female but clearly she is [TS]

00:42:45   playing the child of somebody she's [TS]

00:42:47   either that or they find some random [TS]

00:42:50   child on a because it's it's very odd [TS]

00:42:53   right i think the youngest person we've [TS]

00:42:54   ever seen in the star wars universe and [TS]

00:42:56   I'm think talking about the cannon star [TS]

00:42:58   wars universe not the prequels jacobs [TS]

00:43:00   you've got well you yet [TS]

00:43:02   well but like not talking about Jake [TS]

00:43:04   Lloyd for something like talking about [TS]

00:43:05   the original three movies you've got [TS]

00:43:06   Leia and Leia is supposed to be like 19 [TS]

00:43:10   to 24 yeah right so she's well Carrie [TS]

00:43:12   Carrie Fisher's like 21 she made those [TS]

00:43:14   movies yeah it was a few times as casted [TS]

00:43:16   salutes honestly yeah assume that Daisy [TS]

00:43:19   Ridley is playing Han and Leia's [TS]

00:43:21   daughter right all right look also [TS]

00:43:24   heavily rumored did you did you look at [TS]

00:43:27   her IMDB page it's hilarious because got [TS]

00:43:29   a picture of her head shot from [TS]

00:43:30   publishers and the only other photo on [TS]

00:43:32   the page is that shot of them in the [TS]

00:43:33   circle of chairs so talk about an [TS]

00:43:35   unknown [TS]

00:43:35   it's like she's known for being in this [TS]

00:43:37   chair she looks like she also like [TS]

00:43:39   natalie portman around the eyes instead [TS]

00:43:41   of the mouth too so there's a little bit [TS]

00:43:42   so there's that that almost looks like [TS]

00:43:44   your grandmother yeah so the her her [TS]

00:43:48   real was up for a very very short time [TS]

00:43:50   and I was able to watch it and then they [TS]

00:43:52   pulled it down which is interesting it's [TS]

00:43:55   like why would you pull down a real from [TS]

00:43:57   an actress unless you want to you want [TS]

00:43:59   to be the ones launching her career like [TS]

00:44:02   clearly she has a major role in in the [TS]

00:44:06   in the upcoming movie we just you know [TS]

00:44:09   we can speculate on whose daughter she [TS]

00:44:10   is or or what precisely that role is but [TS]

00:44:14   needless to say it like she is the [TS]

00:44:16   person that they're they're clearly [TS]

00:44:18   pinning some some major star power [TS]

00:44:20   behind but it can be a defensive action [TS]

00:44:22   to nobody is going to be an end up in [TS]

00:44:25   the pr blackout that's going to happen [TS]

00:44:27   over the next X number of months while [TS]

00:44:29   this thing is being filmed so much [TS]

00:44:31   speculation on the credibility of every [TS]

00:44:32   one of these actors is going to be just [TS]

00:44:34   filling every single modulus [TS]

00:44:36   and if you have some kind of roby [TS]

00:44:38   credits to your name their kind of okay [TS]

00:44:41   movies for not very good or one scene [TS]

00:44:43   that is in your real that you kind of [TS]

00:44:44   wish weren't there [TS]

00:44:45   that's all you're gonna be about for the [TS]

00:44:48   next eight to nine months i it's it's [TS]

00:44:50   it's such a great opportunity it's a [TS]

00:44:51   great idea so it's a wonderful part 2 [TS]

00:44:54   thing to be part of this legacy again [TS]

00:44:55   but i'm not sure if it's a little bit [TS]

00:44:57   like running for office every single [TS]

00:44:59   thing you do is going to be scrutinized [TS]

00:45:01   and they're gonna be a lot of people who [TS]

00:45:03   are going to be projecting their own [TS]

00:45:04   fears and their own misconceptions onto [TS]

00:45:06   you and blaming you for stuff that [TS]

00:45:08   didn't take long would write do an [TS]

00:45:10   interview where he just said that this [TS]

00:45:11   is I hate the fact that I did this movie [TS]

00:45:13   because there's so many people who were [TS]

00:45:15   just using my name as an expletive on [TS]

00:45:17   everything that is wrong and unholy on [TS]

00:45:18   this planet [TS]

00:45:19   yeah he claims and star wars are in his [TS]

00:45:22   life [TS]

00:45:23   well i think i might have a mutual so [TS]

00:45:25   adorable little boy is fighting stuff [TS]

00:45:31   with child actor then he didn't write [TS]

00:45:33   the script you know like but I'm having [TS]

00:45:35   I'm realizing how much the prequels [TS]

00:45:37   messed me up in terms of like another [TS]

00:45:38   it's like this should be trigger [TS]

00:45:39   warnings on his casting things because [TS]

00:45:41   whatever i say like I remember how [TS]

00:45:44   excited I was like when you and Gregor [TS]

00:45:45   was cast like these could be the best [TS]

00:45:47   move would like the caliber of actors [TS]

00:45:48   are getting in these prequels this is [TS]

00:45:50   gonna be amazing right even the bit [TS]

00:45:51   parts like you know Samuel Jackson is [TS]

00:45:53   good and then when I see all these [TS]

00:45:54   actors some point I really I really I [TS]

00:45:56   really like I'm driver I these new [TS]

00:45:59   actress like I look at them and I don't [TS]

00:46:00   know anything about them like wow that i [TS]

00:46:02   can just imagine them being great and [TS]

00:46:03   then all I office i get a flash of these [TS]

00:46:05   awesome actors standing as a green [TS]

00:46:07   screen saying terrible dialogue like no [TS]

00:46:09   it's just I don't want to remember that [TS]

00:46:11   happens to disney flying out right here [TS]

00:46:15   I won't get better i'm trying to have [TS]

00:46:18   trying to have hope but like that's I [TS]

00:46:19   mean this is like by lawrence kasdan [TS]

00:46:21   that's why I wanted this I just wanted [TS]

00:46:23   to be a good movie it's all like I don't [TS]

00:46:25   even I don't even need to feel like star [TS]

00:46:27   wars are needed to like a never think [TS]

00:46:28   about in terms of the overall plot I [TS]

00:46:31   almost hope this isn't the case i know [TS]

00:46:32   is a silly hope but like I kind of feel [TS]

00:46:35   like the antagonist in the three real [TS]

00:46:37   star wars movies and the prequels more [TS]

00:46:39   or less was well it's light side of the [TS]

00:46:40   forest for the dark side of the force [TS]

00:46:41   right and I feel like now that conflict [TS]

00:46:44   was resolved for all eternity at the end [TS]

00:46:45   of general but more or less the light [TS]

00:46:47   side one and [TS]

00:46:48   you know balance has been restored or [TS]

00:46:50   whatever I don't want all the movies to [TS]

00:46:53   every movie has to be about let's see [TS]

00:46:54   how this if they're going to worm their [TS]

00:46:55   way back in this time and how they're [TS]

00:46:57   going to be is it doesn't always have to [TS]

00:46:58   be light side of the force for his dark [TS]

00:46:59   side of the force forever and ever for [TS]

00:47:01   the next 15 movies are other stories we [TS]

00:47:03   can tell in the star wars universe [TS]

00:47:05   we're gonna find out and I think what I [TS]

00:47:07   think one of the things that make [TS]

00:47:08   filming with such optimism is that this [TS]

00:47:11   that the entire package has been sold to [TS]

00:47:13   a totally new production company [TS]

00:47:15   it's a totally new director totally knew [TS]

00:47:17   everything that people who don't feel as [TS]

00:47:20   though they have that much of an [TS]

00:47:21   obligation to pay homage to the previous [TS]

00:47:25   culture yes there yes they have the the [TS]

00:47:27   lot of the original cast members but I [TS]

00:47:29   feel as though a lot of the problems [TS]

00:47:31   with the prequels came about with [TS]

00:47:33   wanting to make fans happy with the same [TS]

00:47:36   characters that they had earlier the the [TS]

00:47:39   fancy what is Chewbacca doing at the end [TS]

00:47:41   of the at the inn at the end of episode [TS]

00:47:43   three what are all these other [TS]

00:47:44   characters appearing even though they [TS]

00:47:45   don't make much sense but they're trying [TS]

00:47:47   to make more toys try to expand expand [TS]

00:47:50   the line trying to make this whole thing [TS]

00:47:51   makes sense was not supposed to really [TS]

00:47:53   make sense you're supposed to have a [TS]

00:47:54   republic cereal done with really really [TS]

00:47:57   great ultra-modern 1977 style [TS]

00:47:59   special-effects keep it simple with the [TS]

00:48:01   beginning middle and end consistent [TS]

00:48:02   characters and every character playing [TS]

00:48:04   exactly one role in the story that [TS]

00:48:07   nobody no other character can duplicate [TS]

00:48:09   if you just try to make this as a really [TS]

00:48:11   really good story and not try not to [TS]

00:48:13   make it into a Star Wars movie you're [TS]

00:48:15   seventy percent of the way towards [TS]

00:48:16   making a great film I think I can't see [TS]

00:48:18   a political thriller version time for [TS]

00:50:44   much to squarespace for their support of [TS]

00:50:47   the incomparable Squarespace everything [TS]

00:50:49   you need to create an exceptional [TS]

00:50:51   website [TS]

00:50:53   yeah i think one of the one of things [TS]

00:50:54   that might happen here is that is that [TS]

00:50:56   you know this is going to be franchise [TS]

00:50:58   that they want to do I mean a new [TS]

00:51:00   franchise they want to do a movie every [TS]

00:51:02   year and on the off years it'll be [TS]

00:51:04   spin-off kind of thing so one approach [TS]

00:51:07   they might take here is very much not a [TS]

00:51:09   narrowing of the story to be like let's [TS]

00:51:11   just tell another set of three movies [TS]

00:51:13   that are [TS]

00:51:15   about the return of you know the the [TS]

00:51:17   tried to sit in the Empire trying to [TS]

00:51:19   return to glory you know that I I feel [TS]

00:51:23   like they they are trying to paint a bit [TS]

00:51:25   bigger picture here partially because [TS]

00:51:26   that's what movie franchises are now is [TS]

00:51:28   lots and lots of movies Thank You Marvel [TS]

00:51:30   but which is also owned by disney but [TS]

00:51:33   also just because they want lots of [TS]

00:51:36   movies there the goal the end goal here [TS]

00:51:38   is not to just tell a 33 story in a 3 [TS]

00:51:42   movie story and so that I think that [TS]

00:51:45   might be good in the sense that it might [TS]

00:51:48   actually take some of the pressure off [TS]

00:51:50   and let give them a little more room to [TS]

00:51:52   tell to create you know a new take on [TS]

00:51:55   this universe instead of doing what they [TS]

00:51:59   might have done otherwise which is [TS]

00:52:01   replay the past and tell that same story [TS]

00:52:03   basically invert that story until it [TS]

00:52:05   began [TS]

00:52:05   I think Marvel has the same problem that [TS]

00:52:07   i was just talking about though in that [TS]

00:52:08   the problem with all I I don't follow [TS]

00:52:10   the comics I don't know where the all [TS]

00:52:12   these things are coming from the [TS]

00:52:13   conflict or not but the problem with [TS]

00:52:14   every Marvel movie is that's like are we [TS]

00:52:17   have these characters that are heroes [TS]

00:52:20   everybody loves them each one is able to [TS]

00:52:22   carry its own movie you know like it [TS]

00:52:25   everything works out but like but we [TS]

00:52:26   need something for them to do we need [TS]

00:52:28   them to fight me than to fight an enemy [TS]

00:52:30   we need the world to be in peril and [TS]

00:52:32   it's like the antagonist is always the [TS]

00:52:33   biggest scare factor in those movies [TS]

00:52:35   like if they pick a bad villain or if [TS]

00:52:37   it's just a stupid you know if I don't [TS]

00:52:39   care about them saving the world from [TS]

00:52:40   think I like what is it that they're [TS]

00:52:41   doing what is the conflict and I'm like [TS]

00:52:44   I don't like you're Batman was like he's [TS]

00:52:45   got a bag of villains witness to reach [TS]

00:52:47   one this is the real movie this is the [TS]

00:52:48   whatever movie comic books kind of go [TS]

00:52:50   that direction too but with the marble [TS]

00:52:51   ones like well also it has to be in [TS]

00:52:53   peril everyone points7 movies we have to [TS]

00:52:55   have the entire Earth be in parallel [TS]

00:52:57   systems and it's so hard to keep coming [TS]

00:52:59   up with those that we love the heroes [TS]

00:53:00   but but you know you need something from [TS]

00:53:02   the doing Star Wars they have like oh we [TS]

00:53:04   don't have to have a villain of the week [TS]

00:53:06   but do we have to keep going back to the [TS]

00:53:08   light side versus dark side six verses [TS]

00:53:10   Jedi like I feel like that story has [TS]

00:53:11   been told and I'm ready for to cycle [TS]

00:53:14   back around in and movie 10 for the city [TS]

00:53:16   to come back but I don't want right away [TS]

00:53:17   after Jedi it's like I just clean this [TS]

00:53:19   place up to sit there back again who [TS]

00:53:20   where are these it we're getting in the [TS]

00:53:22   house so would you prefer like a medical [TS]

00:53:24   MIT would you prefer like a medical [TS]

00:53:25   mystery drama were oh my god his [TS]

00:53:26   midi-chlorian are being killed [TS]

00:53:28   I have iron continues to attack them [TS]

00:53:30   it's like an immune system disorder [TS]

00:53:31   what's going on i'm not saying they're [TS]

00:53:33   going to do this like I i have no idea [TS]

00:53:34   what the plot of this movie is going to [TS]

00:53:36   be and I don't want to be spoiled by [TS]

00:53:37   brother i really hope that they are like [TS]

00:53:39   there are many other choices to have I'm [TS]

00:53:41   sure the extent expanding universe [TS]

00:53:42   novels did all these choices is this a [TS]

00:53:44   spy book is this a war story is this a [TS]

00:53:47   you know a romance is thriller like they [TS]

00:53:50   can do all these things and I don't know [TS]

00:53:52   what you're going to do I'm just I'm [TS]

00:53:53   just expressing my fear is not that I'm [TS]

00:53:55   gonna hurt anything that they're going [TS]

00:53:57   to do this but i like the idea of seeing [TS]

00:53:59   the different you know angles that we're [TS]

00:54:01   talking about here i mean for example to [TS]

00:54:02   start going back to another movie we [TS]

00:54:04   talked about not long ago the captain [TS]

00:54:06   america the winter soldier was a nice i [TS]

00:54:08   think twist on the e it wasn't about [TS]

00:54:10   necessarily the entire world being [TS]

00:54:12   parallel yeah they did raise you know [TS]

00:54:13   and feel like they have to raise the [TS]

00:54:15   stakes a couple points but he had a [TS]

00:54:18   feeling of like a spy thriller to it and [TS]

00:54:19   it's like and I could I would love to [TS]

00:54:20   see a Star Wars movie that's in that [TS]

00:54:22   vein that's like hey turns out the New [TS]

00:54:24   Republic isn't that much better than the [TS]

00:54:26   Empire that we were playing so well but [TS]

00:54:27   you know what i loved about the winter [TS]

00:54:29   soldier and i miss that discussion [TS]

00:54:30   because I think parenting [TS]

00:54:32   um but yeah yeah parenting small can [TS]

00:54:35   happen but yeah like a virus [TS]

00:54:38   anyway I'm what I like about that it was [TS]

00:54:40   actually it was actually something where [TS]

00:54:42   people had to use their brains to get [TS]

00:54:43   out of the situation it wasn't merely oh [TS]

00:54:45   look he's filled with serum and he can [TS]

00:54:46   do things with it was it was genuine [TS]

00:54:48   like you actually saw cap string a [TS]

00:54:50   couple thoughts together and then get [TS]

00:54:53   all strategically on you and my hope is [TS]

00:54:55   that they actually did that with star [TS]

00:54:56   wars 2 because in theory someone like [TS]

00:54:58   Princess Leia was already a political [TS]

00:55:00   operator before she had her adventures [TS]

00:55:02   with her brother and his best friends so [TS]

00:55:04   you know I wouldn't mind seeing a [TS]

00:55:07   princess leia who is basically the [TS]

00:55:08   Hillary Rodham Clinton of the Republic [TS]

00:55:10   30 years later and you know and and and [TS]

00:55:13   was basically operating is as a power [TS]

00:55:15   player with amusing tumblers devoted to [TS]

00:55:17   her I think there's room for brains in [TS]

00:55:19   the franchise that makes sense it's not [TS]

00:55:21   just in a mystical Muppets yammering on [TS]

00:55:23   about medical lorians i would really [TS]

00:55:24   like to see something where where where [TS]

00:55:26   in its people tackling the question of [TS]

00:55:29   good force versus bad for sand and maybe [TS]

00:55:31   somebody i have no problem good versus [TS]

00:55:33   bad because that's your eternal you know [TS]

00:55:35   man vs himself type struggle so so what [TS]

00:55:38   if you do have some takeout drivers like [TS]

00:55:39   but what if we can use the bad for us to [TS]

00:55:41   do good thing [TS]

00:55:41   listen and then you've got an antihero [TS]

00:55:43   an interesting question to be answered [TS]

00:55:45   and it turns into a 10cm drama [TS]

00:55:47   I'd love that was it's a customer [TS]

00:55:50   optimism that there we are planning on [TS]

00:55:52   doing a movie every single year now [TS]

00:55:54   because that's it does its I think if [TS]

00:55:56   you don't if you have two or three years [TS]

00:55:58   to do a sequel it seems like the that [TS]

00:56:01   you have to basically say this has to be [TS]

00:56:02   the biggest most sprawling epic movie [TS]

00:56:05   and all and yeah exactly [TS]

00:56:07   yes there it feels like they can see if [TS]

00:56:09   one of your people yeah and so if you're [TS]

00:56:12   writing the story for whatever the first [TS]

00:56:13   movie is and you have this great idea [TS]

00:56:15   for we won't be great we should have [TS]

00:56:16   another character sort of off against [TS]

00:56:18   this other person so that's great let's [TS]

00:56:20   do that next year or the year after that [TS]

00:56:22   let's keep this one movie streamline its [TS]

00:56:24   like I'll there's the most bizarre thing [TS]

00:56:27   I'm gonna be throwing into this but it [TS]

00:56:29   is a little bit like the strength of [TS]

00:56:30   Woody Allen movies where he just makes a [TS]

00:56:33   movie every single year and some of them [TS]

00:56:35   can be kinda weird some of them can be [TS]

00:56:36   very mainstream and some of them can be [TS]

00:56:38   exactly what you expect a Woody Allen [TS]

00:56:40   movie to be you don't have to love every [TS]

00:56:42   single one of them but over five years [TS]

00:56:44   he's gonna make five movies of which one [TS]

00:56:46   you think is great [TS]

00:56:47   3like and to you don't even bother to [TS]

00:56:49   see and I would be perfectly fine at [TS]

00:56:51   this time for bed [TS]

00:56:52   that's what i was saying bye-bye having [TS]

00:56:54   the pressure be off a little bit that [TS]

00:56:55   right that uh you know it it uh it could [TS]

00:56:59   be really good in the sense that the [TS]

00:57:01   that the canvas is really wide now and [TS]

00:57:03   this is like the core right this is the [TS]

00:57:04   continuation of the old story and that's [TS]

00:57:07   why it's episode 78 and nine but they [TS]

00:57:10   don't have to do everything and in fact [TS]

00:57:12   it's better if the universe is set up [TS]

00:57:14   for them to be able to tell lots of [TS]

00:57:15   other stories because they're gonna want [TS]

00:57:17   to keep telling stories in this universe [TS]

00:57:19   so you know this may be the you know [TS]

00:57:22   dark side of the force versus lights out [TS]

00:57:24   of the forest big story that is at the [TS]

00:57:26   core of of this universe but it's not [TS]

00:57:29   the only story and it would be nice to [TS]

00:57:30   see ya to see something a little bit [TS]

00:57:33   different from the the two variations on [TS]

00:57:35   that we've seen with its the original [TS]

00:57:37   trilogy in the prequel july i think [TS]

00:57:38   they're doing the inverted Avengers that [TS]

00:57:40   like like it's an it's it in the [TS]

00:57:42   Avengers movies and we're gonna do a [TS]

00:57:43   bunch of small movie some of them every [TS]

00:57:44   crap so I'm gonna be good what we're all [TS]

00:57:46   building up to here guys is the Avengers [TS]

00:57:48   and then after the Avengers we're going [TS]

00:57:49   to do a couple more small moves into [TS]

00:57:50   captain america movie do this [TS]

00:57:51   we and then we're going to have Avengers [TS]

00:57:52   2 and then we're going to do a couple [TS]

00:57:54   more small boobs and then we're gonna [TS]

00:57:55   have interest three this they're doing [TS]

00:57:56   Avengers 1 2 & 3 upfront and rensing ok [TS]

00:57:59   here's all the spin-off movies and maybe [TS]

00:58:01   one of them will turn out like green [TS]

00:58:02   lantern sorry about that but one of the [TS]

00:58:03   many deaths in America you know [TS]

00:58:05   Green Lantern to start your engines John [TS]

00:58:06   I don't know what I just know that was [TS]

00:58:09   bad [TS]

00:58:10   yeah that's good for you have no clothes [TS]

00:58:12   burned holes all the way to go when [TS]

00:58:15   you're using fire [TS]

00:58:16   ya know what I mean that they are i [TS]

00:58:18   think the plan is to have them alternate [TS]

00:58:20   so they are going to do sort of like the [TS]

00:58:22   big movie and then a little movie and [TS]

00:58:23   then a big movie and then a little movie [TS]

00:58:25   and and that there are lots of rumors [TS]

00:58:27   about how you gonna do that it's [TS]

00:58:28   interesting i was talking to my wife [TS]

00:58:29   about this the other day that's like you [TS]

00:58:32   know Star Wars being an active franchise [TS]

00:58:35   like the Marvel movies are now that's [TS]

00:58:38   kind of weird [TS]

00:58:39   it's it me feel it's like it's kind of [TS]

00:58:41   weird I mean because it's always been [TS]

00:58:43   something that goes into hibernation [TS]

00:58:45   right even between like you know 20 [TS]

00:58:47   years between the prequels and and the [TS]

00:58:50   original movies right and then another [TS]

00:58:51   you know decade and it so it's something [TS]

00:58:54   that comes and goes in spurts and yeah [TS]

00:58:55   you have other properties like your [TS]

00:58:57   clone wars you know TV show or the books [TS]

00:59:00   or the comic books yourself running [TS]

00:59:01   between but then you have these tent [TS]

00:59:03   poles that seem to pop up every couple [TS]

00:59:04   decades so it is really different to [TS]

00:59:08   think of it being something that's like [TS]

00:59:09   I mean it's not out of the question that [TS]

00:59:11   we see a star wars like live-action TV [TS]

00:59:12   show which is something they had had [TS]

00:59:14   talked about for years but never really [TS]

00:59:16   got off the ground but it's certainly [TS]

00:59:17   with with Disney's backing not at all [TS]

00:59:20   i've got their own TV network and you [TS]

00:59:22   know that we've seen that they have a [TS]

00:59:24   willingness to take the Marvel stuff and [TS]

00:59:26   do a TV outpost of that so why would you [TS]

00:59:29   not do that with star wars shirt or [TS]

00:59:31   camper adventure huh generated Godhead [TS]

00:59:35   well the Trade Federation the series but [TS]

00:59:38   one thing I don't want to see is like [TS]

00:59:41   the like the kevin smith version where [TS]

00:59:43   hey now we're gonna have a whole story [TS]

00:59:45   we get to the storm troopers who are [TS]

00:59:46   like really just kind of jaded and just [TS]

00:59:49   hang it out and they're saying omen [TS]

00:59:50   I think it's been done on the internet [TS]

00:59:53   and sketch looks like a robot chicken [TS]

00:59:55   sketch way and and a bunch of other [TS]

00:59:57   things my troop remember Trudy area [TS]

00:59:59   they're so [TS]

00:59:59   they're so [TS]

01:00:00   many things was funny because it was [TS]

01:00:01   just like a YouTube video but one like [TS]

01:00:03   once like a movie studio says we're [TS]

01:00:05   going to work we're too cool to say that [TS]

01:00:08   star wars is awesome we're really [TS]

01:00:09   excited about doing a great story with [TS]

01:00:12   classic characters [TS]

01:00:13   no actually oh no I'm too cool for this [TS]

01:00:15   I'm gonna make poke fun and i have two [TS]

01:00:16   characters talk about a butt man [TS]

01:00:18   why did we even build a desktop to begin [TS]

01:00:21   with they could be so easily blown up [TS]

01:00:22   what's up with that took come on Jerry [TS]

01:00:25   Seinfeld let's start with what you know [TS]

01:00:28   what I see are the nexus poor i think [TS]

01:00:30   was idea was this [TS]

01:00:32   Star Trek has shown that they are in JJ [TS]

01:00:34   least I think strikes the right balance [TS]

01:00:36   between not taking yourself too [TS]

01:00:38   seriously but taking it seriously enough [TS]

01:00:39   like it's not that's why i was back in [TS]

01:00:42   the beginning I was talking about [TS]

01:00:42   fearing a dead that I a poor director [TS]

01:00:46   would acknowledge that people are going [TS]

01:00:48   to apply but Luke Skywalker first [TS]

01:00:50   appeals and they would build it into the [TS]

01:00:51   movie in the editing and the directing [TS]

01:00:52   and JJ will not do that I think you will [TS]

01:00:54   have the movie go straight forward that [TS]

01:00:56   the movie the play with a movie plays it [TS]

01:00:57   will take itself seriously a wink itself [TS]

01:00:59   perhaps even less we can get itself than [TS]

01:01:01   Jedi just about the Empire level winking [TS]

01:01:03   itself but it will never be like that [TS]

01:01:05   cynical or whatever because like if you [TS]

01:01:07   look at the star trek movies he really [TS]

01:01:09   believes in the drama of these things [TS]

01:01:11   happening and is not gonna be like well [TS]

01:01:13   as spaceship and the aliens whatever who [TS]

01:01:15   cares like he's gonna sell he's gonna [TS]

01:01:17   sell the emotion of everything like I'm [TS]

01:01:19   really glad that he he's doing this when [TS]

01:01:20   I think about the star trek movies it [TS]

01:01:21   makes me optimistic for these movies to [TS]

01:01:24   strike the right balance because water [TS]

01:01:25   and he was saying like if someone else [TS]

01:01:27   was helping this I could see that being [TS]

01:01:29   a possibility but I feel like with him [TS]

01:01:31   behind it and presumably his influence [TS]

01:01:33   on whatever other properties spin-off of [TS]

01:01:35   it I i I'm hoping that you know [TS]

01:01:37   everything goes well and Star Wars was [TS]

01:01:39   his you know he's not his baby but his [TS]

01:01:42   that was his french fries [TS]

01:01:43   you know he was practicing with Star [TS]

01:01:45   Trek as is appropriate i think but if [TS]

01:01:48   you go back and watch lost like clearly [TS]

01:01:50   he is a huge Star Wars fan right like [TS]

01:01:52   that all sorts of jokes about Star Wars [TS]

01:01:53   monster stuff and you know that's the [TS]

01:01:55   reason I think we all know that he [TS]

01:01:56   ultimately took this right even though [TS]

01:01:58   he was doing the star trek franchise [TS]

01:02:00   like he could not say no to star wars [TS]

01:02:02   sounds like he actually was afraid to [TS]

01:02:04   say yes because it means so much to him [TS]

01:02:06   and but so so this is something i wanted [TS]

01:02:09   to close with it's good to talk a little [TS]

01:02:11   bit about JJ Abrams which you know is [TS]

01:02:13   there [TS]

01:02:13   he's got it he's got his critics and [TS]

01:02:15   he's definitely got some issues in the [TS]

01:02:16   end of Star Trek movies he's done you [TS]

01:02:18   know are not are not perfect but I'm I'm [TS]

01:02:20   really encouraged by his choice because [TS]

01:02:22   he does love Star Wars and like I said [TS]

01:02:26   at the beginning of the show I feel like [TS]

01:02:28   he under he understands why Star Wars is [TS]

01:02:31   great like hehe i feel like he gets it [TS]

01:02:34   in that way and that's vitally important [TS]

01:02:37   that that you've got creative people who [TS]

01:02:39   actually like understand why people love [TS]

01:02:40   star wars because I really do believe [TS]

01:02:42   that was George Lucas's ultimately yeah [TS]

01:02:45   he can't write dialogue with a lot of [TS]

01:02:46   things but his fatal flaw was George [TS]

01:02:48   Lucas never understood why people loved [TS]

01:02:50   his thing he never got why people [TS]

01:02:53   actually attached to it and I think JJ [TS]

01:02:54   Abrams totally gets it and what we saw [TS]

01:02:56   him do with Star Trek was taking a [TS]

01:02:58   franchise that was essentially dead and [TS]

01:03:00   rethink it and and make it in the [TS]

01:03:02   context of modern moviemaking while [TS]

01:03:04   still honoring the things that people [TS]

01:03:07   loved about it and that mean that you [TS]

01:03:09   that's the perfect template for this and [TS]

01:03:11   speaking of the guy was sitting next to [TS]

01:03:13   JJ the more I see about Harrison Ford [TS]

01:03:16   like how he operates as an actor in the [TS]

01:03:18   various movies that he's in that in [TS]

01:03:20   addition to all his grouchiness and all [TS]

01:03:21   is you know just the way he line reading [TS]

01:03:23   the reading the gigantic making a [TS]

01:03:25   vampire book and like I its he has a [TS]

01:03:28   surprising amount of influence [TS]

01:03:29   increasing with his you know fame on the [TS]

01:03:32   movies that he's in for the better [TS]

01:03:34   I you know like all the all the ways he [TS]

01:03:37   was contributing to these scenes in [TS]

01:03:38   Empire where he was more or less just a [TS]

01:03:40   kid right and now at this point when [TS]

01:03:42   he's in a movie he feels like he's [TS]

01:03:44   practically the second director [TS]

01:03:45   obviously that's going to be reined in [TS]

01:03:46   by JJ you know i'm assuming he can [TS]

01:03:48   handle him but like his his influence [TS]

01:03:51   his understanding i think harrison ford [TS]

01:03:53   also understands what makes our way even [TS]

01:03:55   though he's grumpy about it even though [TS]

01:03:56   he's kind of gets pissed off these han [TS]

01:03:57   Solo and he likes in the engines better [TS]

01:03:59   all these other things he's got a head [TS]

01:04:01   on his shoulders about what makes good [TS]

01:04:02   movies and so like when I see them [TS]

01:04:04   leaning into each other and talking like [TS]

01:04:05   yes listen to him he may be a jerk [TS]

01:04:07   sometimes but he knows what he's talking [TS]

01:04:08   about he and almost certain point of [TS]

01:04:10   view [TS]

01:04:10   yeah exactly i got that reference I [TS]

01:04:13   appreciate that reference very good [TS]

01:04:16   you're fired and nobody knowledge to [TS]

01:04:18   direct this money I'm different if [TS]

01:04:20   there's a bad feeling about this in in [TS]

01:04:22   like I mean I will give him 14 episode [TS]

01:04:25   7i will happen one bed [TS]

01:04:26   and that's it and it better be like [TS]

01:04:28   middle to late movie better be like I [TS]

01:04:30   have a bad feeling that person just gets [TS]

01:04:32   shot in the hair yes right that's the [TS]

01:04:34   that's the amount of linking you're [TS]

01:04:35   allowed you get one of those preferably [TS]

01:04:37   the person gets killed before you [TS]

01:04:38   complete the sentence that's it [TS]

01:04:39   The Scream don't they'll be with their [TS]

01:04:41   grandkids there be playing a game of the [TS]

01:04:43   grandkids hey wait admitted toga shot [TS]

01:04:46   first at-bats over the line that had [TS]

01:04:49   long as they don't have those high-fives [TS]

01:04:51   where they failed to make contact [TS]

01:04:53   Leah will give to bottom angel and and [TS]

01:04:56   I'm told you can be arranged but much [TS]

01:05:00   let's all write a bad for outsourcing [TS]

01:05:02   this script right here right now if we [TS]

01:05:05   do it here then they won't do it there [TS]

01:05:07   that's the idea right we just saved here [TS]

01:05:09   is like saying bad things before you get [TS]

01:05:11   on a plane flight just say all the bad [TS]

01:05:13   things that you don't want to see the [TS]

01:05:15   star wars movie and they won't happen [TS]

01:05:17   that's exactly what banks charge of inks [TS]

01:05:18   Jar Jar Jar Binks guns at all no guns [TS]

01:05:22   and not even the background shot he [TS]

01:05:23   walks he walks baby baby walks I i think [TS]

01:05:27   the opening crawl will just say you know [TS]

01:05:29   the galaxy is internal turmoil following [TS]

01:05:32   wake of the Gungan extinction and then [TS]

01:05:36   just continue on [TS]

01:05:37   just remember that they're they're not [TS]

01:05:39   already times can we say we're sorry [TS]

01:05:41   here here's Hans solo again you like [TS]

01:05:44   consoles are Wars Episode 7 the apology [TS]

01:05:47   of your money back on any of the [TS]

01:05:48   prequels or any of the toys you bought [TS]

01:05:50   but let's just try to rebuild and that's [TS]

01:05:53   the scroll to say Star Wars Episode 7 [TS]

01:05:55   than a big long empty space and then a [TS]

01:05:58   thing imprint lisa says don't worry we [TS]

01:05:59   got this [TS]

01:06:00   yahoo or gotcha team is getting well I [TS]

01:06:04   mean the message sent by having at [TS]

01:06:07   having not only hiring JJ Abrams but but [TS]

01:06:11   having Lawrence cast and involve right [TS]

01:06:13   that that is a message of like hey you [TS]

01:06:16   know that guy who wrote that Empire [TS]

01:06:17   Strikes Back movie that you kinda like [TS]

01:06:19   he's going to be really deeply involved [TS]

01:06:20   in in the in the creative aspects and [TS]

01:06:22   and one question I have and I don't know [TS]

01:06:24   the answer i don't know whether it's [TS]

01:06:25   lawrence casting JJ Abrams or or or if [TS]

01:06:28   it's kathleen kennedy but she's more of [TS]

01:06:30   a producer which is like the Marvel [TS]

01:06:32   movies have some cut kinda like a [TS]

01:06:35   showrunner or a creative supervisor who [TS]

01:06:37   are plotting what they're doing and [TS]

01:06:39   I assume you know looking at all the [TS]

01:06:42   stories that Lawrence casting is sort of [TS]

01:06:44   doing some of that for Star Wars of [TS]

01:06:46   franchisees you know they've got [TS]

01:06:48   somebody has to watch this stuff and say [TS]

01:06:50   what are we doing and where we going [TS]

01:06:52   from here and I think that's good i I [TS]

01:06:55   think it's not just PR but i think it's [TS]

01:06:56   a little message that this is a guy who [TS]

01:06:58   understands the franchise and did good [TS]

01:07:00   work in it and he's we brought him in to [TS]

01:07:02   make sure that this stuff is okay that's [TS]

01:07:04   kind of dangerous to like the whole the [TS]

01:07:06   whole showrunner thing like that the [TS]

01:07:07   person's the one person's personality is [TS]

01:07:10   imprinted so heavily on the things [TS]

01:07:12   they're running whereas again reading [TS]

01:07:13   the the Empire book you see how how did [TS]

01:07:16   the Empire story come to be we got the [TS]

01:07:17   lead bracket thing with the more or less [TS]

01:07:19   straight away then you had Kasdan and [TS]

01:07:20   then you had Lucas and Kirshner and the [TS]

01:07:23   three of them would argue with each [TS]

01:07:25   other until they figure out what the [TS]

01:07:26   hell the story was going to be and that [TS]

01:07:28   the three of them kind of fighting with [TS]

01:07:29   each other and no one of the you know [TS]

01:07:30   that was before Lucas was like well it's [TS]

01:07:33   going to be the way I wanted to be so I [TS]

01:07:34   just do this like they would argue [TS]

01:07:36   around the table to see how things were [TS]

01:07:38   going to go and I think that benefited [TS]

01:07:40   the movie because it had just been [TS]

01:07:41   Kazmir gets to do whatever he wants it [TS]

01:07:43   would have been as good as a movie in [TS]

01:07:44   Italy because what you want filmic [TS]

01:07:46   filmmaking the collaborative art by [TS]

01:07:48   graduation right but like what I'm [TS]

01:07:50   seeing here is like oh now it's like [TS]

01:07:51   it's not cast in the nineteen seventies [TS]

01:07:53   and eighties its casting now and I hope [TS]

01:07:55   you if I don't I hope there's no one [TS]

01:07:57   person running the show including JJ I [TS]

01:07:59   hope that it is more of a like you know [TS]

01:08:01   it because it's not like around this [TS]

01:08:04   background to the Soviets yeah it always [TS]

01:08:07   comes back there [TS]

01:08:08   well don't like like Marvel you know Jon [TS]

01:08:10   Jon Favreau was involved from the early [TS]

01:08:12   stages and now Joss Whedon sort of the [TS]

01:08:14   the dominant that thing although they've [TS]

01:08:16   also got Kevin I keefy whose bethpage [TS]

01:08:20   the pitch fade so he's like a disease [TS]

01:08:23   anyway the they've got they've got some [TS]

01:08:26   people who are working on it but that [TS]

01:08:28   doesn't mean the winter soldier isn't [TS]

01:08:29   still heavily influenced by the [TS]

01:08:31   screenwriters and directors of it so so [TS]

01:08:33   you know there's room for that [TS]

01:08:35   creativity but there's also sort of like [TS]

01:08:36   a an overarching vision that I think is [TS]

01:08:38   kind of important like where we going [TS]

01:08:40   and how is this all going to relate and [TS]

01:08:42   I do wonder about that but I like I just [TS]

01:08:44   like see Lawrence cast in there he just [TS]

01:08:46   just because it's like he did this he [TS]

01:08:48   kind of gets it gives you a link to the [TS]

01:08:50   past and it's somebody who understands [TS]

01:08:52   the franchise [TS]

01:08:53   so I think that's a good message to send [TS]

01:08:54   we'll we'll see what you know what the [TS]

01:08:56   screenplay is like but I think it's a [TS]

01:08:58   good message sent [TS]

01:09:00   well as soon as JJ send us a copy of his [TS]

01:09:03   script will be will be [TS]

01:09:05   yeah you got to have about it i was [TS]

01:09:06   trying to avoid I'm trying to avoid [TS]

01:09:08   spoilers so I'm i want to go into this [TS]

01:09:10   movie not knowing what it's about not [TS]

01:09:12   knowing who dies not and maybe maybe [TS]

01:09:14   that's a tall order but i'm going to try [TS]

01:09:15   its yeah that is I mean I accidentally [TS]

01:09:18   remember I've ever getting the Phantom [TS]

01:09:21   Menace will quite an active am [TS]

01:09:23   soundtrack yeah so I'm child would like [TS]

01:09:25   to avoid that this time around [TS]

01:09:27   episode 7 the death of Han Solo will [TS]

01:09:29   anything else we should talk about [TS]

01:09:32   before we wrap it up anything else you [TS]

01:09:34   based on sort of like anything that's [TS]

01:09:36   happened since this was all announced [TS]

01:09:38   that you've got buzzing around your [TS]

01:09:39   brains that we should talk I just I just [TS]

01:09:41   keep thinking again we're sort of [TS]

01:09:43   touched upon the holster reality of this [TS]

01:09:45   actually happening i think when we [TS]

01:09:47   talked about the the disney [TS]

01:09:49   announcements but yeah I mean the idea [TS]

01:09:52   that like well it's not gonna be very [TS]

01:09:54   long before we see like a trailer or [TS]

01:09:55   something that like I remember that I [TS]

01:09:57   remember the episode 1 trailer being [TS]

01:09:58   like a huge you and that we turn out to [TS]

01:10:01   be crap but i still can't you know can't [TS]

01:10:04   quite avoid getting excited about the [TS]

01:10:06   idea of seeing this and let's so fair [TS]

01:10:09   the episode 1 trailer was pretty cool [TS]

01:10:11   that original one with the with the [TS]

01:10:13   breathing that was great [TS]

01:10:14   if only I had been building the next one [TS]

01:10:17   was a bad but like yeah if they move [TS]

01:10:19   they could have made a two-minute movie [TS]

01:10:20   like it probably could have pulled it [TS]

01:10:22   off [TS]

01:10:23   no I'm hopeful i want to be hopeful i [TS]

01:10:26   want to believe JJ I want to believe I [TS]

01:10:30   mean it's Star Wars Spencer formative [TS]

01:10:32   part of my life and my geekdom that I I [TS]

01:10:37   can't like even if it's terrible even if [TS]

01:10:39   it's the worst thing ever i can't help [TS]

01:10:42   but want to love it and i'm going to try [TS]

01:10:44   and stay positive and want to love it [TS]

01:10:46   and like John avoid spoilers because you [TS]

01:10:49   know what it's like as as in adults as a [TS]

01:10:52   kid I love spoilers and I was like yes [TS]

01:10:54   give me all the spoilers I want to know [TS]

01:10:56   everything ahead of time i'll try and [TS]

01:10:58   download the movie so I can watch the [TS]

01:11:00   first 10 minutes over and over because [TS]

01:11:02   the restaurant download it but now I you [TS]

01:11:05   know [TS]

01:11:05   I appreciate the move I appreciate [TS]

01:11:07   stories being told in their in their [TS]

01:11:09   fullest you know completest extent and I [TS]

01:11:12   would i I'm excited to see what they do [TS]

01:11:15   with it they certainly I mean they have [TS]

01:11:16   a banner cast and they potentially have [TS]

01:11:19   good screenwriters I don't see you know [TS]

01:11:21   or sour or skirts skirts i can say his [TS]

01:11:26   last war zone first vault or seven parts [TS]

01:11:28   pasta is writing the script we have many [TS]

01:11:31   people [TS]

01:11:33   well sometimes their lines end up being [TS]

01:11:36   lame pasta I just say more zone risotto [TS]

01:11:39   I exactly terrible building i think [TS]

01:11:42   through silly has done some excellent [TS]

01:11:43   work only with all an Italian and it [TS]

01:11:46   really just you know what the dog for [TS]

01:11:48   graduation [TS]

01:11:49   yes plots have great twist though the [TS]

01:11:52   fusilli wants nicely but I'm bummed this [TS]

01:11:55   this podcast has devolved now I it's [TS]

01:11:58   gotten late now [TS]

01:11:59   it all starts to make sense to me now [TS]

01:12:01   because that I haven't you you should be [TS]

01:12:03   very concerned right now you could [TS]

01:12:06   possibly seek some sort of medical all [TS]

01:12:08   right anything else we should talk about [TS]

01:12:09   before we go I am I just gonna want my [TS]

01:12:13   capper on this movies i predict escaping [TS]

01:12:15   my music i'm predicting my response was [TS]

01:12:18   going to be very similar to my response [TS]

01:12:20   to the star trek reboot but magnified [TS]

01:12:22   because i'm not as invested in Star Trek [TS]

01:12:23   is as some other people on this podcast [TS]

01:12:25   but i do care about it you know a little [TS]

01:12:27   bit and my reaction to the the first the [TS]

01:12:30   star trek reboot was like I had I had [TS]

01:12:33   this things like this should be a really [TS]

01:12:35   good movie and I'm going to hold it to a [TS]

01:12:37   higher standard because i really like [TS]

01:12:38   this franchise right and I did that with [TS]

01:12:40   the movie and then what i found is when [TS]

01:12:42   you know I had a little grudge like well [TS]

01:12:44   that wasn't a bad movie it was actually [TS]

01:12:46   pretty good but it should have been a [TS]

01:12:48   little bit better because hey it's Star [TS]

01:12:49   Trek right and then I found on repeat [TS]

01:12:50   watchings i gave the movie a break and [TS]

01:12:52   I'm like you know what I really enjoy [TS]

01:12:53   this the same guy with a second movie [TS]

01:12:55   like i was able to like you know and my [TS]

01:12:57   attachment of Star Wars is even stronger [TS]

01:12:59   so it's probably no matter how good this [TS]

01:13:00   movie is I'm gonna be like well that was [TS]

01:13:02   pretty good but and on repeat viewings I [TS]

01:13:05   think it'd be like just relax just you [TS]

01:13:07   know go with it like you just let go of [TS]

01:13:10   your preconceived notions and how you [TS]

01:13:12   think this has to be like Godfather Part [TS]

01:13:14   2 in space with lightsabers because i'm [TS]

01:13:15   not going to be and just allow it to be [TS]

01:13:17   biggest star movies I [TS]

01:13:19   maintain like there are things I don't [TS]

01:13:20   like about the micellar podcast but [TS]

01:13:22   every time I rewatched the moment you [TS]

01:13:24   know what I enjoyed watching that and [TS]

01:13:26   like every time I watch it gets better [TS]

01:13:28   that's not a bad thing to have this to [TS]

01:13:29   say i would like this movie to be fun i [TS]

01:13:31   would like to enjoy this movie like just [TS]

01:13:34   that [TS]

01:13:35   yeah i mean i have the worst thing that [TS]

01:13:37   would happen for me is if they try to [TS]

01:13:39   make this into we're going to totally [TS]

01:13:41   reinvent the star wars universe because [TS]

01:13:43   again this was not designed to ever be [TS]

01:13:45   ground-breaking taxi drivers style [TS]

01:13:48   seventies epics and you set the cinema [TS]

01:13:50   this was designed to be we're going to [TS]

01:13:52   take the very very classic warriors [TS]

01:13:55   journey and we're going to make this in [TS]

01:13:57   the style of a dogfight movies from the [TS]

01:13:59   nineteen thirties and Republic cereals [TS]

01:14:01   and we're just gonna deliver a lot of [TS]

01:14:02   popcorn value for someone's 90 minutes [TS]

01:14:05   for the running time and my overall [TS]

01:14:07   attitude is that I'm perfectly fine i'm [TS]

01:14:09   i'm really looking forward to these [TS]

01:14:10   movies because if it's a terrible movie [TS]

01:14:14   the first the movies that i still liked [TS]

01:14:16   will still be there i will still be able [TS]

01:14:18   to watch them like them and there's [TS]

01:14:20   always a chance that they'll be really [TS]

01:14:21   really good and we have an advantage [TS]

01:14:24   that a lot of other generations don't [TS]

01:14:26   have which is even if it's not a great [TS]

01:14:29   movie we get to reconnect with that part [TS]

01:14:32   of our childhood that we treasure and [TS]

01:14:34   all of those influences that star wars [TS]

01:14:36   had on as both personally and from an [TS]

01:14:39   entertainment value and how it shaped [TS]

01:14:41   our word worldview and every great [TS]

01:14:42   memory that we have that's going to be [TS]

01:14:44   really triggered and rekindle that we're [TS]

01:14:45   going to enjoy it even a mediocre movie [TS]

01:14:47   the way that other with the viewers are [TS]

01:14:50   just not going to be able to access and [TS]

01:14:52   certain star trek worked on that level [TS]

01:14:53   for me exactly right it's like all these [TS]

01:14:56   buttons that only that you know original [TS]

01:14:59   set of characters could possibly push [TS]

01:15:01   and and i'm also reminded i want to [TS]

01:15:05   mention serenity not called well [TS]

01:15:08   although i could mention you to the move [TS]

01:15:11   the firefly a continuation film i [TS]

01:15:15   remember coming and i said this on the [TS]

01:15:16   pockets before my wife and I came out of [TS]

01:15:17   that movie and said pipes fun i haven't [TS]

01:15:20   seen a movie that was a sci-fi movie [TS]

01:15:21   that was fun like that in a long time [TS]

01:15:23   and some of the Marvel movies are like [TS]

01:15:24   that too and there are there other [TS]

01:15:26   movies like that but like I would like [TS]

01:15:27   it to be fun right i would like it to be [TS]

01:15:29   fun and and fun adventure yet [TS]

01:15:32   out we're gonna have this burden of [TS]

01:15:33   expectation we're gonna be like well you [TS]

01:15:35   know it didn't do this and didn't do [TS]

01:15:37   that and I don't know about that but in [TS]

01:15:39   the end [TS]

01:15:40   god I would if I had to pick one thing [TS]

01:15:42   for a new star wars movie to be i would [TS]

01:15:44   choose fun just if you if it's a fun [TS]

01:15:47   ride and it doesn't check 20 different [TS]

01:15:50   boxes and it isn't got the Godfather in [TS]

01:15:53   space and then yeah that's fine as long [TS]

01:15:57   as it's enjoyable fun and I leave the [TS]

01:16:00   theater energized right well see even [TS]

01:16:03   the fun aspects of like in the star trek [TS]

01:16:05   movie like I was holding against the [TS]

01:16:07   parts that I deemed not didn't take it [TS]

01:16:09   seriously enough for example like there [TS]

01:16:10   are parts of the starter motor resistor [TS]

01:16:11   week giving it the example from into [TS]

01:16:13   darkness is like the bikini scene or [TS]

01:16:14   whatever but like in the first one like [TS]

01:16:16   when his hand gets puffy I was like well [TS]

01:16:17   that that's a little bit to slapstick [TS]

01:16:20   for Star Trek right and i still think [TS]

01:16:22   that's not the best sequence in the [TS]

01:16:24   movie but now when i watch the movie I [TS]

01:16:26   like I don't hold that against that I'm [TS]

01:16:28   like okay well here's the silly part [TS]

01:16:29   usually doesn't work because because [TS]

01:16:31   there are good parts if you don't like [TS]

01:16:33   their weaknesses in the movie and like [TS]

01:16:35   and it's I don't want to take those [TS]

01:16:36   weaknesses and say but you had this [TS]

01:16:38   weakness but you have this one thing [TS]

01:16:40   that I think wasn't the best choice and [TS]

01:16:42   it's like just just ignore that part if [TS]

01:16:44   the rest of the movie is good like I [TS]

01:16:46   mean that there's their limits like I [TS]

01:16:47   can't put the jar level kind of disaster [TS]

01:16:49   in the middle of the good movie but I [TS]

01:16:51   really just need to not get obsessed [TS]

01:16:54   with the things that I know are wrong [TS]

01:16:55   with the movie and just say what about [TS]

01:16:57   things that are right about the movie [TS]

01:16:58   right what about the good parts and [TS]

01:16:59   especially in like maybe like a real [TS]

01:17:01   started rebooting when I rewatching I'm [TS]

01:17:03   like this opening sequence is [TS]

01:17:04   unbelievable like with the childbirth I [TS]

01:17:06   guess it's melodrama is ridiculous space [TS]

01:17:08   opera like yes that's what it's supposed [TS]

01:17:10   to be yourself seriously it's [TS]

01:17:12   beautifully shot there's lots of lens [TS]

01:17:13   the lens flares if you really like those [TS]

01:17:14   you know really good lens flares contain [TS]

01:17:17   a coded message for John you love in [TS]

01:17:20   that like I'm I'm multiple viewings I'm [TS]

01:17:21   like you know what [TS]

01:17:23   that's an obvious stylistic choice and [TS]

01:17:24   it's something interesting it's a little [TS]

01:17:26   bit different if they use lens flares [TS]

01:17:27   all the Star Wars maybe i'll be pissed [TS]

01:17:28   but it's making choices and I think [TS]

01:17:30   that's what it comes down to for a lot [TS]

01:17:31   for good direction is making choices and [TS]

01:17:33   not just being like that whatever [TS]

01:17:36   whatever works like bunch of people on a [TS]

01:17:38   catch against a green screen should be [TS]

01:17:40   time for its making definitive choices [TS]

01:17:42   sometimes those choices will be bad but [TS]

01:17:44   a lot of times they'll be good [TS]

01:17:45   so you know that's kind of what you got [TS]

01:17:46   to go for ya almost certainly not all [TS]

01:17:50   right i think this is a good discussion [TS]

01:17:52   about a movie that's not coming out for [TS]

01:17:53   a year and a half but you know Star Wars [TS]

01:17:56   as much on our minds and it's [TS]

01:17:58   interesting to see this this news [TS]

01:18:00   continue to progress it is a funny thing [TS]

01:18:02   to be in a world where star wars is an [TS]

01:18:06   active franchise actively shooting you [TS]

01:18:08   know as we sit here were or like in a [TS]

01:18:10   week's time you know Harrison Ford will [TS]

01:18:13   be acting in front of a camera as han [TS]

01:18:15   solo how crazy is that [TS]

01:18:17   I don't believe it I like the world that [TS]

01:18:21   I live in right now [TS]

01:18:22   yeah it's pretty great i didn't i look [TS]

01:18:24   forward to being back with you guys here [TS]

01:18:30   go to frame 107 that's right now advance [TS]
