00:00:41   uncomfortable we are continuing our [TS]

00:00:43   journey through the films of hayao [TS]

00:00:44   miyazaki and this episode is going to be [TS]

00:00:48   about 1986 'as castle in the sky lap [TS]

00:00:54   utah i am joining i'm jason still as [TS]

00:00:57   always I'm floating in a castle in the [TS]

00:00:58   sky suspended merely by the power of a [TS]

00:01:01   crystal joining me here are a collection [TS]

00:01:03   of moss-covered robots led by Steve [TS]

00:01:06   let's hi Steve I'm in love with you [TS]

00:01:10   hello Merlin Mann make your shirt [TS]

00:01:13   explode [TS]

00:01:14   oh no John siracusa based on some of the [TS]

00:01:17   other panelists introductions I'm [TS]

00:01:19   thinking some puss may have listened to [TS]

00:01:21   the dub that's pretty quite possible i [TS]

00:01:23   don't recognize that those are cheaters [TS]

00:01:25   no I read the read the subs playing sims [TS]

00:01:28   here hello hello and Erica and sign one [TS]

00:01:31   for all and all for Mom [TS]

00:01:33   Oh mom little mom mama mama in Japanese [TS]

00:01:38   she's mama and not mom I discovered that [TS]

00:01:42   this time anybody have any opening [TS]

00:01:45   statements John siracusa have a [TS]

00:01:47   statement about the opening the other [TS]

00:01:50   thing that I do that so that's pretty [TS]

00:01:52   why don't we start there because if you [TS]

00:01:54   don't have any opening statements then [TS]

00:01:55   the next thing to do is talk about the [TS]

00:01:56   opening of the film so that's pretty [TS]

00:01:58   much what a reasonable an opening [TS]

00:02:00   statement [TS]

00:02:00   yeah go ahead John time pretty sure I [TS]

00:02:02   talked about the opening of this movie [TS]

00:02:04   in other episodes of incompetent maybe [TS]

00:02:06   in [TS]

00:02:08   uh the miyazaki survey course that we [TS]

00:02:11   did ya the only two persons episode of [TS]

00:02:13   the incomparable ever you and me John [TS]

00:02:15   refresh our memory from episode 22 or [TS]

00:02:17   whatever that is it was the incomparable [TS]

00:02:19   number 84 March 2012 the opening of this [TS]

00:02:24   movie is my second favorite Opening [TS]

00:02:26   second to the Gnostic opening and it is [TS]

00:02:29   very similar to it [TS]

00:02:30   this movie is very so much Monica in [TS]

00:02:32   many superficial ways and that this it [TS]

00:02:35   opens with an action sequence and then [TS]

00:02:37   there are there's a montage with a [TS]

00:02:39   stylized sort of not title cards but [TS]

00:02:43   like animations that are done in a [TS]

00:02:44   different style than the rest of the [TS]

00:02:45   movie and writing way that you have that [TS]

00:02:47   you have that montage animation in the [TS]

00:02:48   beginning of hours ago and you get the [TS]

00:02:50   the theme music from the movie playing [TS]

00:02:52   over it and i love that I love the sort [TS]

00:02:56   of i'm going to give you background on [TS]

00:02:57   the world wordlessly with some music but [TS]

00:03:00   this one book ends it with the action [TS]

00:03:03   sequence in the beginning which is you [TS]

00:03:05   know frames this movie well and says [TS]

00:03:06   this is going to be this is the kind of [TS]

00:03:08   movie this is going to be and of course [TS]

00:03:09   our hero falls from the airship and then [TS]

00:03:13   the montage plays and then when the [TS]

00:03:15   montage is over they cut back to our [TS]

00:03:18   hero still falling because of course you [TS]

00:03:20   still falling we saw her fall and a [TS]

00:03:23   rather than say a and she falls for [TS]

00:03:25   death like nope she's still falling [TS]

00:03:27   she's unconscious and she's dropping [TS]

00:03:28   through this guy which i think is one of [TS]

00:03:30   the most dramatic sort of reveals and [TS]

00:03:32   interest to the movie and it's brave and [TS]

00:03:34   interesting and it's something you [TS]

00:03:36   normally don't see like it even if they [TS]

00:03:37   were going to have the hero fall in the [TS]

00:03:39   pre credit sequence in a more [TS]

00:03:41   conventional movie especially an [TS]

00:03:42   animated one you would resume to find [TS]

00:03:46   her on the ground you not sure how she [TS]

00:03:48   got there or at the moment with the [TS]

00:03:51   crystal reveal rather than just showing [TS]

00:03:53   the seemingly lifeless in artbody [TS]

00:03:55   hurdling downwards which is straight [TS]

00:03:57   down headfirst right which is very [TS]

00:03:59   dramatic for an animated kids filming I [TS]

00:04:01   think overall this movie has shown that [TS]

00:04:03   is very opening sequence dances on this [TS]

00:04:06   weird line between cartoon physics and [TS]

00:04:09   cartoon violence no you know where [TS]

00:04:11   there's lots of shooting and guns and [TS]

00:04:13   they're pirates and they're slightly [TS]

00:04:14   comical but they're using realistic [TS]

00:04:17   weapons and there's a little bit of an [TS]

00:04:19   edge of danger it's like [TS]

00:04:21   three steps of GI joe where everybody [TS]

00:04:23   Jax just in time and nobody actually [TS]

00:04:24   gets hit by bullets but it's it's a it's [TS]

00:04:28   like a realistic and the drawings are [TS]

00:04:30   all realistic so I think the opening [TS]

00:04:33   this movie definitely sets the tone for [TS]

00:04:35   it and is one of my favorite things and [TS]

00:04:38   i think i may like the opening better [TS]

00:04:39   than the rest of this entire movie [TS]

00:04:41   combined so we just sit here and dwell [TS]

00:04:43   on that for a while i agree with [TS]

00:04:46   everything John said except for the [TS]

00:04:48   unfortunate fact that we start with the [TS]

00:04:50   Pirates and therefore we get joe [TS]

00:04:51   hisaishi she's pirate theme which is [TS]

00:04:54   really not good [TS]

00:04:56   it's unbelievably eighties very kind of [TS]

00:05:00   jarring synth music and it's possible to [TS]

00:05:03   have synth music that has kind of an [TS]

00:05:05   epic feel to it that feels lush and this [TS]

00:05:07   particular theme does not it's a it's [TS]

00:05:10   it's kind of a dull thud of a music cue [TS]

00:05:13   which is unfortunate because all the the [TS]

00:05:16   orchestral stuff with the opening theme [TS]

00:05:18   and everything else is really beautiful [TS]

00:05:20   and well done and this just sticks out [TS]

00:05:21   like a sore thumb and unfortunately it [TS]

00:05:23   opens up the movie also your first [TS]

00:05:25   impression of this film is as I wrote in [TS]

00:05:26   my notes a clown and some guys and [TS]

00:05:28   jumpsuits takeover Zeppelin it's got my [TS]

00:05:33   castle kali-aastra kind of feel to it [TS]

00:05:34   and no we haven't done that one yet but [TS]

00:05:36   it's in that vein of like sort of [TS]

00:05:38   nineteen thirties or forties stylized [TS]

00:05:40   cartoon-like all the characters they [TS]

00:05:44   look more or less human but they sort of [TS]

00:05:46   do squashes and stretches if they're [TS]

00:05:47   learning to his characters in many [TS]

00:05:48   regards like even when the door is [TS]

00:05:50   bursting in when they come to the door [TS]

00:05:51   the door bends and bulges in a cartoony [TS]

00:05:55   way but then shatters into [TS]

00:05:56   realistic-looking fragments is weird [TS]

00:05:58   that the end is weird balance between if [TS]

00:06:01   you take any individual grip frame like [TS]

00:06:03   this is a realistically animated movie [TS]

00:06:04   but if you happen to catch them in the [TS]

00:06:06   middle of one of their cartoon physics [TS]

00:06:07   things it's it's strange the Pirates are [TS]

00:06:09   the same way they are both brandishing [TS]

00:06:13   semi-realistic guns with bullets in them [TS]

00:06:16   but totally comical and the the audio [TS]

00:06:19   impression that I get yes the Pirates a [TS]

00:06:20   goofy and you have that that stuff in [TS]

00:06:22   the beginning but the sound that opens [TS]

00:06:24   the film and the theme i think that [TS]

00:06:27   opens the film is yeah basically [TS]

00:06:29   miyazaki love flying machines flying [TS]

00:06:31   machines make weird noises like this one [TS]

00:06:33   the rhythmic buzzing and whining of [TS]

00:06:35   their strange bird looking ship and the [TS]

00:06:38   the little insect things they're flying [TS]

00:06:40   on this could not be more miyazaki you [TS]

00:06:43   know like it's just very wacky yeah my [TS]

00:06:46   first note is all airships all the time [TS]

00:06:48   yeah so true so true um I love that [TS]

00:06:51   opening sequence i love the woodcut kind [TS]

00:06:54   of style of it i think it's not only is [TS]

00:06:56   the music good but I i just love how the [TS]

00:06:58   whole thing looks I could watch that [TS]

00:07:00   again and again on its own because I [TS]

00:07:02   think it's really beautiful and I and [TS]

00:07:05   I'm a sucker for that kind of like [TS]

00:07:06   change in art style an animated movie [TS]

00:07:08   and and that's a great one [TS]

00:07:11   I love the I love the whole opening [TS]

00:07:12   sequence it's beautiful now I assume the [TS]

00:07:15   change in art style is because we're [TS]

00:07:16   seeing kind of a montage of what has [TS]

00:07:18   come before least that's what I got out [TS]

00:07:19   of that the image shown there's that [TS]

00:07:21   that's the build-up to the building of [TS]

00:07:24   LA and and the end is they have returned [TS]

00:07:28   to Earth on their giant spaceship which [TS]

00:07:29   looks like it crashed and there's tons [TS]

00:07:31   and tons of people streaming out and [TS]

00:07:33   then we're back to the pastoral scene [TS]

00:07:35   only now it's sheets standing out there [TS]

00:07:37   with her weird mole creature instead of [TS]

00:07:39   the previous guy [TS]

00:07:41   yeah wraps around because they show in [TS]

00:07:42   the beginning they start off they [TS]

00:07:44   figured out they can make windmills that [TS]

00:07:46   are very basic and used to pump water [TS]

00:07:48   from the ground and that it progresses [TS]

00:07:50   where they start you know putting [TS]

00:07:51   propellers on propellers and you know [TS]

00:07:53   culminating with the most ridiculous [TS]

00:07:54   giant propeller underneath the floating [TS]

00:07:56   city and all these cities are floating [TS]

00:07:58   around and look at what we've done but [TS]

00:07:59   then of course calamity and the forces [TS]

00:08:02   of nature and or war force them back to [TS]

00:08:04   the ground and in the end they're back [TS]

00:08:07   where they started or just a sense they [TS]

00:08:09   needed to return to the earth because of [TS]

00:08:10   course man is indelibly attached to the [TS]

00:08:13   rocks in the early yeah well it shows [TS]

00:08:15   like all that you know the lightning and [TS]

00:08:16   the storms and stuff like that but they [TS]

00:08:18   end up back where they started which is [TS]

00:08:19   now you know what was once known was [TS]

00:08:21   lost to set this is such a classic [TS]

00:08:23   premise for things like there was the [TS]

00:08:24   the old world and great advancement and [TS]

00:08:26   they flew too close to the Sun and there [TS]

00:08:28   and now you know none now live there [TS]

00:08:31   remember it so it's over we're back to [TS]

00:08:33   back to that single propeller only knows [TS]

00:08:34   that [TS]

00:08:34   there's a little girl there and think [TS]

00:08:37   like like the Star Wars crawl it gets a [TS]

00:08:40   lot of expedition out of the way only [TS]

00:08:41   without even using words and sets up the [TS]

00:08:45   whole world so you can just cut right [TS]

00:08:46   back to the store and say okay now I see [TS]

00:08:48   where we are and back to the phone girl [TS]

00:08:50   the only problem that is it took me two [TS]

00:08:51   viewings to realize that that was the [TS]

00:08:53   before times that I was seeing [TS]

00:08:55   yeah it just appeared to be images of [TS]

00:08:57   sky technology which we had already seen [TS]

00:08:59   quite a bit of so you know there was no [TS]

00:09:02   real reason to not assume that that was [TS]

00:09:04   just present time you got my attention [TS]

00:09:05   is a progression it's like the montage [TS]

00:09:07   in journey in the game journey it's [TS]

00:09:08   almost the same time on tosh brand new i [TS]

00:09:11   had had seen now she has so many times [TS]

00:09:13   that that's it's the same same kind of [TS]

00:09:15   thing I mean it's not exactly a woodcut [TS]

00:09:17   but it's giving you sort of that the [TS]

00:09:18   history so as soon as this started I was [TS]

00:09:20   like oh I see I see where this is going [TS]

00:09:22   alright and paying attention the other [TS]

00:09:24   thing i like most about the opening and [TS]

00:09:25   it's actually for the thing I like most [TS]

00:09:26   about the first half hour of the of the [TS]

00:09:29   movie is the way it kind of toys with [TS]

00:09:31   your assumptions because the first time [TS]

00:09:33   through I just sort of assumed that the [TS]

00:09:35   the man that she was traveling within [TS]

00:09:37   the glasses was her father and the [TS]

00:09:40   Pirates were straight up the bad guys [TS]

00:09:42   and I didn't notice the subtle touches [TS]

00:09:45   like how she's refusing her dinner yeah [TS]

00:09:47   he puts the plate towards her and she [TS]

00:09:49   just turns the head he shoves look very [TS]

00:09:51   subtle animation again in a movie where [TS]

00:09:52   things get completely cartoonish very [TS]

00:09:54   soon and even that same scene and when [TS]

00:09:56   she constant with the bottle i just [TS]

00:09:58   assumed well it's because he's trying to [TS]

00:09:59   protect her and she knows that he's [TS]

00:10:01   gonna get killed if he protects her so [TS]

00:10:03   she's shocked him and knock him out [TS]

00:10:05   take the crystal that she knows the [TS]

00:10:07   Pirates want she's gonna head out and [TS]

00:10:08   and and save her father you got your [TS]

00:10:11   Hall the movie run your mom yeah a lot [TS]

00:10:13   of sense [TS]

00:10:14   well I did you know it'sit's tropes that [TS]

00:10:15   I'm used to seeing in this sort of thing [TS]

00:10:16   you know and and so I was going with [TS]

00:10:19   that assumption until actually 30 [TS]

00:10:20   minutes in when they finally revealed [TS]

00:10:22   that she is afraid of the guy when he [TS]

00:10:23   appears so I thought it was really cool [TS]

00:10:26   very well done and and and more [TS]

00:10:28   effective than perhaps it was to anybody [TS]

00:10:30   else because i'm an idiot talking about [TS]

00:10:33   sheet for a second because it you know [TS]

00:10:35   within the miyazaki heroines are not so [TS]

00:10:37   popular a lot of movies you watch and [TS]

00:10:39   this one the first couple times I watch [TS]

00:10:41   this [TS]

00:10:42   I always felt mildly disappointed that [TS]

00:10:44   she was that the Delete in this one [TS]

00:10:47   is it's kind of a split type thing i'm [TS]

00:10:50   not sure you can see the lead but she [TS]

00:10:53   does our main character but she is [TS]

00:10:55   immediately you know falling to her [TS]

00:10:57   seeming death but on a subsequent [TS]

00:11:00   viewings i watched I've seen that she [TS]

00:11:02   does she actually does most of the [TS]

00:11:05   things that heroin does is just like Oh [TS]

00:11:08   heroin in the movie like her little [TS]

00:11:11   friend so she's she's prisoner and can't [TS]

00:11:14   do much about it when she sees a chance [TS]

00:11:16   to free herself from her situation she [TS]

00:11:19   takes initiative and consummate the [TS]

00:11:20   bottle then she's brave by going out the [TS]

00:11:23   window but she's also located and [TS]

00:11:25   miscalculate sand falls and so that that [TS]

00:11:29   all fits and then she has to be carried [TS]

00:11:30   by pot soup down and you know she ends [TS]

00:11:33   up unconscious for a long period of time [TS]

00:11:34   but as the movie progresses in and now [TS]

00:11:36   my 900 you doing [TS]

00:11:39   I was taking note of when is she being [TS]

00:11:41   swept along by them by the plot and when [TS]

00:11:43   is she doing something making a decision [TS]

00:11:47   and advancing the story or at least [TS]

00:11:50   deciding her own fade rather than having [TS]

00:11:52   the events of the movie decide for and [TS]

00:11:54   I've come around a little bit to [TS]

00:11:55   thinking that she's not as sort of [TS]

00:11:58   cookie cutter damsel as I originally [TS]

00:12:00   thought she was other thing i noticed [TS]

00:12:01   watching it I'm really watches in [TS]

00:12:03   earnest in 45 years and I think this is [TS]

00:12:06   true of most miyazaki movies but this is [TS]

00:12:09   a great example our is you know we've [TS]

00:12:12   talked before about how difficult it is [TS]

00:12:13   to know when and where this is supposed [TS]

00:12:16   to be the only thing I usually feel with [TS]

00:12:18   some certainty easy things are usually [TS]

00:12:19   not in the future I don't know if [TS]

00:12:21   they're in the past but you know the [TS]

00:12:22   combination the dick different [TS]

00:12:23   technologies you know the wackadoo [TS]

00:12:25   outfits that people have this feels very [TS]

00:12:27   steampunk to me [TS]

00:12:29   sialic steampunk whales so you know but [TS]

00:12:31   it's like it it opens but it opens with [TS]

00:12:34   this almost James Bond beginning when [TS]

00:12:37   you think about the way she's falling [TS]

00:12:38   and I guess I just feel like it's I'm [TS]

00:12:41   realizing more and more how draw him how [TS]

00:12:43   do i am to win these things start like I [TS]

00:12:45   don't want to miss a single detail of [TS]

00:12:47   what's happening because not only trying [TS]

00:12:49   to figure out who's who who's good who's [TS]

00:12:51   bad guy you know what I mean what the [TS]

00:12:53   relationships are but you know I'm [TS]

00:12:55   thinking about what you know where this [TS]

00:12:56   is what parts of this is the magical [TS]

00:12:58   things [TS]

00:12:59   and I i think these movies and the [TS]

00:13:02   course it's just visually stunning and [TS]

00:13:04   maybe on top of it all like I don't [TS]

00:13:06   think this looks like it's from 1986 [TS]

00:13:08   it's that's the other thing these movies [TS]

00:13:10   it's very difficult for me to tell you [TS]

00:13:12   from my parents what order these were [TS]

00:13:13   made in and kind of out of time [TS]

00:13:16   yeah yeah it is but i think that that [TS]

00:13:17   conflict different things and you know [TS]

00:13:19   as circuses talked about so many times [TS]

00:13:21   before like you know sometimes things [TS]

00:13:22   from different countries and cultures [TS]

00:13:24   are just they're interesting because [TS]

00:13:25   they are so different but in this case [TS]

00:13:28   like why are these guys wearing like [TS]

00:13:29   hoods and ballet slippers and what's [TS]

00:13:30   happening and I'm feeling that meeting [TS]

00:13:32   that especially attenuates my interest [TS]

00:13:34   in what's going on i pay super duper [TS]

00:13:36   amounts of attention in a way that i may [TS]

00:13:38   not with with other kinds of movies [TS]

00:13:40   that's part of why that supremely [TS]

00:13:41   eighties pirates theme is so [TS]

00:13:43   disappointing to me because it really [TS]

00:13:45   kind of drops the the action right into [TS]

00:13:48   a specific time period and I'm [TS]

00:13:50   intimately aware that it's 1986 whenever [TS]

00:13:52   that plays I'm happy without awareness [TS]

00:13:55   and i like that you had in mind that I [TS]

00:13:57   it having not seen a whole lot of [TS]

00:14:00   miyazaki and the few ones that I had [TS]

00:14:01   things that I had seen kind of thinking [TS]

00:14:03   that maybe it just do it wasn't for me [TS]

00:14:05   if I didn't dislike anything I'd seen I [TS]

00:14:07   just hadn't enjoyed it except for now [TS]

00:14:09   and I was thinking maybe that was just a [TS]

00:14:10   an outlier and that was just the only 1i [TS]

00:14:13   liked this was the first time that I [TS]

00:14:15   watched castle in the sky and when it [TS]

00:14:17   started it i was just immediately swept [TS]

00:14:19   up in it felt like sort of coming home [TS]

00:14:22   it felt like putting on a warm blanket [TS]

00:14:23   like this all just sort of feels right [TS]

00:14:26   all the things you guys have talked [TS]

00:14:27   about so far and then it wasn't tell I [TS]

00:14:30   don't know just a little bit earlier [TS]

00:14:31   today and i watch this yesterday that I [TS]

00:14:33   realized why it felt so comforting and [TS]

00:14:35   it was because it reminded me an awful [TS]

00:14:37   lot of a series called Nadia the secret [TS]

00:14:39   of blue water which starts out with the [TS]

00:14:41   mysterious the are young girl with a [TS]

00:14:43   mysterious past who has a jeweled [TS]

00:14:45   necklace that some sort of wacky since [TS]

00:14:49   the sort of wacky they're not pirates I [TS]

00:14:51   remember exactly what they are but [TS]

00:14:52   they're a wacky crew of people that are [TS]

00:14:54   somewhat funny trying to trying to catch [TS]

00:14:56   her and she meets a young boy was trying [TS]

00:14:58   to invent an airplane and they go on [TS]

00:15:00   these adventures only to discover today [TS]

00:15:02   that it was written by miyazaki so no [TS]

00:15:05   surprise but I love Nadia so all of [TS]

00:15:09   those pieces sort of came together [TS]

00:15:11   um and and and it just made me feel kind [TS]

00:15:14   of at home and it's it's very it's a [TS]

00:15:17   little more fantastical than nadia is [TS]

00:15:19   not yet gets weird because it ends up [TS]

00:15:20   being 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea [TS]

00:15:21   whereas I think this i now prefer castle [TS]

00:15:25   in the sky because it's a little a [TS]

00:15:26   little less goofball later on I wanted [TS]

00:15:30   to get back to what John was saying [TS]

00:15:32   about sheet a kind of being mildly [TS]

00:15:34   disappointing because it doesn't seem [TS]

00:15:37   like she has a whole lot of agency [TS]

00:15:38   although she does indeed make several [TS]

00:15:40   moves that that are the heroic moves but [TS]

00:15:43   and I think a lot of the disappointment [TS]

00:15:46   that is is just in contrast to the the [TS]

00:15:48   strong female protagonist that have been [TS]

00:15:50   another miyazaki films I mean she kind [TS]

00:15:52   of stands out in that respect but I i [TS]

00:15:54   think a lot of that is just because I [TS]

00:15:55   mean this whole thing is so much just a [TS]

00:15:57   like a boy's adventure tale like a [TS]

00:16:00   treasure island except with airplanes [TS]

00:16:02   really sure and it's so much from [TS]

00:16:04   positive perspective I mean he's he's [TS]

00:16:06   he's an orphan sure but he's got this [TS]

00:16:08   cool pad was able to build this pencil [TS]

00:16:10   and pad ever [TS]

00:16:12   yeah and then this really beautiful girl [TS]

00:16:15   just descends from the sky and lands in [TS]

00:16:17   his arms and he's able to save her and [TS]

00:16:19   then anything adventure and they fall [TS]

00:16:20   into some done mining tunnels but [TS]

00:16:22   they're not really that scary because [TS]

00:16:23   they brought sandwiches and then uncle [TS]

00:16:25   palm shows up and uncle tom is this [TS]

00:16:27   school is happy guys buddy and and then [TS]

00:16:30   they join the Pirates and then there's a [TS]

00:16:31   giant robot and you know so much of it [TS]

00:16:34   is just from that perspective that I [TS]

00:16:36   think I think she kind of gets lost in [TS]

00:16:38   in in the mix but on the other hand [TS]

00:16:40   really the only character in this thing [TS]

00:16:43   that is a complex fully-formed character [TS]

00:16:46   is dola who is a wonderful character yet [TS]

00:16:49   and very very nuanced so I think that [TS]

00:16:53   someone makes up for it [TS]

00:16:54   yeah the speaking a bed that opening [TS]

00:16:56   sequence with his house and her finding [TS]

00:16:58   it like they spent so much movie so much [TS]

00:17:00   time and music he always says he'll [TS]

00:17:01   spend all the time in the world just [TS]

00:17:03   establishing atmosphere and whimsy like [TS]

00:17:05   pot to fixing the Machine getting [TS]

00:17:07   meatballs for his boss the unconscious [TS]

00:17:10   she is up top and he's running around [TS]

00:17:11   doing his job [TS]

00:17:13   you know you learn that you know that [TS]

00:17:15   he's a kid he's gotta work he's gotta [TS]

00:17:17   work hard everyone else is gone home the [TS]

00:17:18   economy's not that you have the miners [TS]

00:17:20   are talking comin up in the elevator and [TS]

00:17:22   all that about [TS]

00:17:23   gonna run out of stuff in the mine yeah [TS]

00:17:25   learn to work the break then he goes [TS]

00:17:26   back to his house and it's all foggy in [TS]

00:17:28   the morning and he lets the dogs out in [TS]

00:17:30   places trumpet minutes later the [TS]

00:17:32   whimsies just coming onto your head is [TS]

00:17:34   like unbelievable do you think the town [TS]

00:17:35   appreciates that trumpet playing by the [TS]

00:17:37   way or do they hate the orphan on the [TS]

00:17:38   hill [TS]

00:17:39   well that's why they sent him to the [TS]

00:17:40   hill yeah and take your trumpet with you [TS]

00:17:44   and his job he jumps off with the [TS]

00:17:46   crystalline like here's the thing about [TS]

00:17:47   these two characters like they're you [TS]

00:17:48   know this is an adventure movie and the [TS]

00:17:50   characters aren't that complicated but [TS]

00:17:51   for a good character the traits of the [TS]

00:17:54   characters have pots mashita they are [TS]

00:17:56   good-natured like chill people basically [TS]

00:18:00   like that they're both of their [TS]

00:18:01   personalities he's a bit of a goofball [TS]

00:18:03   she's generally nice they both have grit [TS]

00:18:05   and determination but neither one of [TS]

00:18:07   them has the complicated character flaws [TS]

00:18:10   of I mean I guess I have an older person [TS]

00:18:12   I suppose right they they both have the [TS]

00:18:16   naivete of children at which is probably [TS]

00:18:18   appropriate but they didn't need one of [TS]

00:18:20   them are are like even is complicated [TS]

00:18:22   and have as much of an inner world is [TS]

00:18:24   for example key who I think it's just [TS]

00:18:26   supposed to be a little bit older but I [TS]

00:18:28   get a Kiki vibe from this beginning part [TS]

00:18:30   because of the amount of time they spend [TS]

00:18:32   dwelling on the deep the mundane details [TS]

00:18:36   of their life of you know their house [TS]

00:18:38   and the breakfast and the trumpets and [TS]

00:18:41   the doves and feeding them and just they [TS]

00:18:44   spend a lot of time here and that that [TS]

00:18:47   gives me the warm fuzzies because he is [TS]

00:18:49   basically an entire movie of that right [TS]

00:18:50   and this is this is a nice sort of [TS]

00:18:52   interlude between the big dramatic [TS]

00:18:55   falling from the airship to two tanks [TS]

00:18:59   driving down train tracks and falling [TS]

00:19:01   into a giant pit you know like it says [TS]

00:19:03   this has a nice roller case roller [TS]

00:19:04   coaster in terms of the the wacky action [TS]

00:19:06   and then the interludes retargeting no [TS]

00:19:08   palm and and that the rocks are lighting [TS]

00:19:10   out there's there's another part that is [TS]

00:19:13   I think it runs through somewhat through [TS]

00:19:15   the movies which is obviously it's a [TS]

00:19:17   movie there's events we are we are [TS]

00:19:19   seeing the action happening and part of [TS]

00:19:21   that is the pacing the storytelling all [TS]

00:19:23   that kind of stuff that you think about [TS]

00:19:24   a lot of the characters especially the [TS]

00:19:26   kids in his movies think about what [TS]

00:19:28   their life is like all the time when [TS]

00:19:30   they're not doing that action [TS]

00:19:32   you might imagine a pretty lonely kid if [TS]

00:19:34   you think about really just a whole lot [TS]

00:19:36   of the characters and in this case these [TS]

00:19:38   are two kids that that were probably you [TS]

00:19:40   know the pretty lonely and you know you [TS]

00:19:43   know what it's like when you make a [TS]

00:19:44   friend and now you know you're looking [TS]

00:19:45   out for that person and if there's [TS]

00:19:47   something you know it something you know [TS]

00:19:49   kind of sweet and organic about that and [TS]

00:19:52   then again also maybe a little bit [TS]

00:19:53   melancholy I I'm could be a little off [TS]

00:19:55   base here but i think i think a lot of [TS]

00:19:56   his characters if you imagine them in [TS]

00:19:58   their repose would probably just spent a [TS]

00:19:59   lot of time ruminating and feeling a [TS]

00:20:01   little bit alone and it's nice to see [TS]

00:20:02   people come together like that you know [TS]

00:20:03   with common cause that's what I like [TS]

00:20:05   about shita and pots are working [TS]

00:20:07   together is that it feels more like I [TS]

00:20:09   don't know you know more fairy tale-like [TS]

00:20:11   but it's where there's a boy and a girl [TS]

00:20:12   and no it's like Hansel and Gretel [TS]

00:20:14   almost right there kind of lost it on [TS]

00:20:15   their own and they have to take care of [TS]

00:20:17   themselves and their team and yeah they [TS]

00:20:19   go off and do some different things and [TS]

00:20:20   she gets taken because she's the key to [TS]

00:20:22   this because she's royalty she gets [TS]

00:20:24   taken away and pops who has to have his [TS]

00:20:25   little daring do but i do feel like [TS]

00:20:27   they're a team and that's one of the [TS]

00:20:28   things I like about it is that they're [TS]

00:20:30   there on equal footing also by the way [TS]

00:20:32   if you listen to the dubbed version [TS]

00:20:33   english dub the voices of pots to and [TS]

00:20:36   Sheeta are much older sounding than they [TS]

00:20:39   are in japanese version so i think the [TS]

00:20:41   right way to look at them is that [TS]

00:20:42   they're pretty young married there maybe [TS]

00:20:44   even not just a little younger than key [TS]

00:20:46   they're a lot younger than key these are [TS]

00:20:48   fairly young kids that was the same [TS]

00:20:50   issue I had with nasik aware where [TS]

00:20:51   suddenly she jumped from like a [TS]

00:20:53   thirteen-year-old girl to a [TS]

00:20:54   seventeen-year-old girl [TS]

00:20:56   yeah i mean the way those pirates were [TS]

00:20:57   retreating shita did at first I was like [TS]

00:21:00   oh yeah they're little kids and then [TS]

00:21:02   suddenly all these Pirates are falling [TS]

00:21:03   over each other in love with her I'm [TS]

00:21:05   like okay she's older how old are they [TS]

00:21:08   supposed to be do you think is based on [TS]

00:21:10   the viruses the Japanese know that the [TS]

00:21:12   kids because based on the Japanese I [TS]

00:21:14   assume yet 1211 yeah yeah but obviously [TS]

00:21:18   the the English dub suggest and perhaps [TS]

00:21:20   that's just because of the Pirates in [TS]

00:21:21   later that suggests that they're a bit [TS]

00:21:23   older but this they shouldn't look at [TS]

00:21:24   but i don't know how much of my [TS]

00:21:26   assumption that there Yung comes from [TS]

00:21:28   the fact that they just have [TS]

00:21:28   high-pitched voices and that could be [TS]

00:21:30   coming from you know fifteen-year-old [TS]

00:21:32   they're small they're small they're [TS]

00:21:33   small people there are small child [TS]

00:21:35   constructed people [TS]

00:21:37   yeah that's certainly how they seem i [TS]

00:21:38   was thinking even maybe like nine could [TS]

00:21:41   be [TS]

00:21:41   oh well yeah i was thinking they're [TS]

00:21:42   really really little bit than you know [TS]

00:21:45   as we will discuss some things that [TS]

00:21:48   happen later read that really creepy [TS]

00:21:49   also the idea of a nine-year-old just [TS]

00:21:52   living all by himself in a house taking [TS]

00:21:55   care of himself well that's that's part [TS]

00:21:56   of the melancholy like it was supposed [TS]

00:21:58   to be a gentle giant peach kind of thing [TS]

00:22:01   yeah she there when her parents died or [TS]

00:22:03   whatever she just has to keep staying on [TS]

00:22:04   the farm and taking out the axe and and [TS]

00:22:06   you know doing all the stuff and and [TS]

00:22:08   pasta doesn't have parents he's gotta [TS]

00:22:10   work as a kid but he has to work and [TS]

00:22:12   it's hard being a kid who works and he [TS]

00:22:13   works hard and he lives by himself and [TS]

00:22:15   he makes his own food and he takes care [TS]

00:22:17   of his own doves and like that's the [TS]

00:22:19   world forget you know this this is kind [TS]

00:22:21   of a fallen world where that the ruins [TS]

00:22:23   of the past civilization are there if [TS]

00:22:25   you look at where they're living their [TS]

00:22:26   kind of living in like a crater you [TS]

00:22:28   actually see it at various points there [TS]

00:22:29   are like like impact craters all over [TS]

00:22:31   the ground like old impact craters were [TS]

00:22:33   4 meteors are from bombs from the past [TS]

00:22:35   civilization however that are falling [TS]

00:22:37   the city's yeah you know it's not it's a [TS]

00:22:39   tough world for everybody that randomly [TS]

00:22:41   fired off weapons from Sky fortresses [TS]

00:22:43   could they live they live in a tough [TS]

00:22:45   world but they are both of these [TS]

00:22:47   characters are cheerfully determined to [TS]

00:22:50   do whatever needs to be well i think a [TS]

00:22:51   lot of it just comes from that whole [TS]

00:22:53   adventure tailed you from the childhood [TS]

00:22:55   view anyway I mean it's you know you're [TS]

00:22:58   sitting around fantasizing well you know [TS]

00:23:00   if I could get rid of these idiot [TS]

00:23:01   parents of mine i could live in a hut [TS]

00:23:04   somewhere and have great adventure [TS]

00:23:05   really self-sufficient and I don't have [TS]

00:23:08   to worry about anything like building or [TS]

00:23:10   purchasing a house one would just appear [TS]

00:23:12   for me and I could live in it all by [TS]

00:23:13   myself [TS]

00:23:14   he's whistle though because he misses [TS]

00:23:15   his dad and his he's his project like [TS]

00:23:18   you sell because must be lonely party [TS]

00:23:20   was a project this project is to build a [TS]

00:23:21   plane and prove his missing or deceased [TS]

00:23:24   father right there you know this picture [TS]

00:23:26   we took that everyone said he was crazy [TS]

00:23:27   like he's you know he's he has something [TS]

00:23:30   that is trying to do we're not quite [TS]

00:23:31   sure what she was doing other then she [TS]

00:23:33   was just hanging out on her farm in the [TS]

00:23:34   absence of her parents and got stolen [TS]

00:23:36   right let's talk about the Pirates and [TS]

00:23:38   the pirate chase one of the things that [TS]

00:23:40   happens so after after we have our [TS]

00:23:41   moment in the in the mind and all of [TS]

00:23:44   that one of the next thing that happens [TS]

00:23:46   in this movie is this big pirate chase [TS]

00:23:49   they come down on their bug flyers [TS]

00:23:51   there's a chase through town it leads to [TS]

00:23:53   which chase a train chase and then and [TS]

00:23:58   then [TS]

00:23:58   it becomes a three-way chase because [TS]

00:24:00   then the army is on the train tracks and [TS]

00:24:02   the Pirates are kind of battling the [TS]

00:24:04   army and and there's a crumbling bridge [TS]

00:24:07   and and you know it ends with them [TS]

00:24:08   falling from the for the crumbling [TS]

00:24:11   bridge that they're dangling on and of [TS]

00:24:14   course they float down because as we saw [TS]

00:24:16   in the opening sequence if you've got [TS]

00:24:18   that crystal you don't fall to your [TS]

00:24:21   death you float down but i love this [TS]

00:24:23   whole thing i love this whole thing be [TS]

00:24:27   the train chase it's great it's a great [TS]

00:24:31   action sequence where they they're [TS]

00:24:33   coming up behind them and they've got [TS]

00:24:34   the extra cars and then they try to [TS]

00:24:36   disconnect the cars so that they'll hit [TS]

00:24:39   them but then they push forward and then [TS]

00:24:41   they have to try to put the brake on in [TS]

00:24:43   order to to delay them further like all [TS]

00:24:46   of that and there's also the way they [TS]

00:24:48   frame it where like there's the great [TS]

00:24:50   there's a slow-motion chest-thumping [TS]

00:24:51   fight scene that has all the sons [TS]

00:24:53   interests right we're bursting olvera [TS]

00:24:55   their shirts the ID we should talk about [TS]

00:24:58   that was good yeah we have mom gets the [TS]

00:24:59   binoculars and is and she they're all [TS]

00:25:02   wanted to watch the fight she's a [TS]

00:25:03   wonderful shot that kind of frames this [TS]

00:25:05   the beginning of this where she's at [TS]

00:25:07   first starts out looking at the front [TS]

00:25:09   right and then she slowly turns and [TS]

00:25:11   looks down she's a smart one [TS]

00:25:13   she figures out that they went out the [TS]

00:25:14   back door and that kind of frames the [TS]

00:25:16   beginning of that while the suns like [TS]

00:25:17   you are watching all anyone knows saying [TS]

00:25:18   like I just the framing that all the way [TS]

00:25:21   the tracks are torn up like why are they [TS]

00:25:23   throwing the car off i'm not sure but [TS]

00:25:25   like it was it was it was a great action [TS]

00:25:27   seen you again like something from James [TS]

00:25:29   Bond it was it was really good [TS]

00:25:30   they were throwing those off so they [TS]

00:25:31   could they could pull their car forward [TS]

00:25:34   forward [TS]

00:25:34   yeah yeah and they are and the army [TS]

00:25:36   thing is great where they're like whoa [TS]

00:25:37   we can't go there it's the army and we [TS]

00:25:39   can oh no but another coming and they go [TS]

00:25:40   across the other at the other bridge [TS]

00:25:42   they're running at this point across the [TS]

00:25:44   other bridge and the army like takes it [TS]

00:25:47   out and I yeah it's all it's all very [TS]

00:25:50   exciting i just i i really love the [TS]

00:25:52   whole thing a felt very he gave me the [TS]

00:25:54   same feeling that like watching a good [TS]

00:25:56   like a watching indiana jones kind of [TS]

00:25:59   sequence makes me feel it's just again [TS]

00:26:01   it's adventure and daring do and some [TS]

00:26:03   surprises and some interesting actions [TS]

00:26:06   that the characters have to go through [TS]

00:26:07   although who builds these trestle [TS]

00:26:08   bridges that fall apart when a car [TS]

00:26:10   rides over yeah there's a lot of damage [TS]

00:26:12   that wasn't in the specs t yeah I [TS]

00:26:15   wondered about the physics of those just [TS]

00:26:16   kind of in general they seem like [TS]

00:26:18   they're you know like a mile off the [TS]

00:26:19   ground all wood and have slaves I gotta [TS]

00:26:23   be imbued with some kind of magic to [TS]

00:26:25   actually be holding together at all here [TS]

00:26:28   and there barely holding together [TS]

00:26:29   yes your flavor you get from the [TS]

00:26:31   sequences when pots you like it when [TS]

00:26:33   he's running to catch the train [TS]

00:26:35   originally hey you got the impression [TS]

00:26:37   that he's run to catch train many times [TS]

00:26:39   and it's confirmed when he gets on there [TS]

00:26:41   and the end the the engineer of the [TS]

00:26:43   train recognize them so much like like [TS]

00:26:45   you get the idea of you get a picture of [TS]

00:26:47   his life that he is a scamp he's running [TS]

00:26:48   around he's doing his job [TS]

00:26:50   sometimes you catch the train and of [TS]

00:26:51   course our engineer knows him because he [TS]

00:26:53   does this all the time and that you know [TS]

00:26:55   that kind of gives a sense of community [TS]

00:26:56   that this isn't it on his home turf and [TS]

00:26:58   that's why he's able to outsmart them [TS]

00:27:01   all right because he knows the territory [TS]

00:27:04   despite the Army and the Pirates [TS]

00:27:05   afternoon when he knows the Pirates to [TS]

00:27:07   he's the one that announces its the dole [TS]

00:27:08   again following yeah and he's tied into [TS]

00:27:11   all of everything that's going on finger [TS]

00:27:12   on the pulse of people want to talk [TS]

00:27:14   about that the previous scene where [TS]

00:27:15   they're in the town in there the the [TS]

00:27:17   Pirates come and there's the we have the [TS]

00:27:19   battle as the people whose who can swell [TS]

00:27:21   their chest up to the shirts are way too [TS]

00:27:23   tight [TS]

00:27:24   what does that nothing is that your [TS]

00:27:25   shirt is too tight if you can break your [TS]

00:27:27   they say like a do that thing where [TS]

00:27:29   you're where you're sure bursts open mic [TS]

00:27:31   all right i'll do that make your shirt [TS]

00:27:33   explode had the wife of the potters boss [TS]

00:27:36   who's the the big strong guy his wife is [TS]

00:27:38   there with like I don't actually like a [TS]

00:27:40   pan or a rolling pin or so yeah and when [TS]

00:27:42   the fights gonna go out she grabs that [TS]

00:27:44   the daughter the the wonderfully Rumple [TS]

00:27:46   haired daughter right there LMAO yeah [TS]

00:27:49   polls are inside and of course pots was [TS]

00:27:51   next to his boss making his big thing [TS]

00:27:52   she comes back a minute later grabbed [TS]

00:27:54   him pulled him into it's like it's not [TS]

00:27:56   this is another case where like all the [TS]

00:27:58   women have to take the women folk and [TS]

00:28:00   she's taking the children in yeah and [TS]

00:28:01   she just had to take one and then she [TS]

00:28:02   comes back out pop so you come and he [TS]

00:28:04   has to she has to convince him all your [TS]

00:28:06   job is to protect doubt it convince him [TS]

00:28:08   to stay here that he's not being [TS]

00:28:09   emasculated as an eleven-year-old that [TS]

00:28:11   all your job is to protect your friend [TS]

00:28:13   right it's like oh yeah okay i can do [TS]

00:28:14   and that's another great bit of [TS]

00:28:16   animation too because you you actually [TS]

00:28:17   see the thoughts behind her little [TS]

00:28:20   animated is going [TS]

00:28:22   yeah let's see I need this kid to stay [TS]

00:28:23   inside [TS]

00:28:24   what can i say that's gonna make him [TS]

00:28:25   actually haha you can click practically [TS]

00:28:27   see a light bulb going off and the way [TS]

00:28:29   he sort of went in the Japanese are in [TS]

00:28:31   the subtitles this [TS]

00:28:32   she's saying it's ken this is maddening [TS]

00:28:34   how different these are but she said [TS]

00:28:36   something like you know there's a pretty [TS]

00:28:37   girl here and you see him go [TS]

00:28:39   hmm any kind of pops up is just a little [TS]

00:28:41   bit like realizes he has a job to do [TS]

00:28:42   there is no way i can think of that i [TS]

00:28:46   would love this scene in any other type [TS]

00:28:49   of movie than a miyazaki movie city as I [TS]

00:28:51   was watching it tonight i was trying to [TS]

00:28:53   imagine ok if this were a live-action [TS]

00:28:54   thing I would be like I don't know [TS]

00:28:57   rolling my eyes if it works some kind of [TS]

00:29:00   like Disney movie I guess guest on does [TS]

00:29:02   that kind of but still not my favorite [TS]

00:29:04   put in this it just absolutely delights [TS]

00:29:07   me it is so over-the-top and so I don't [TS]

00:29:11   know man preening it's just it's just [TS]

00:29:15   hilarious and i love it so much and I [TS]

00:29:17   love boss's wife and she's just kind of [TS]

00:29:20   standing back there observing all this [TS]

00:29:22   and she's like I'm not fixing that for [TS]

00:29:23   you and you know it's just so so many [TS]

00:29:27   little delightful things that just make [TS]

00:29:29   me grin every time I see the scene it's [TS]

00:29:31   one of my favorites in the movie [TS]

00:29:33   actually [TS]

00:29:33   and you can tell from his wife like [TS]

00:29:35   again the wife and the daughter the [TS]

00:29:36   rumble daughter and the wife you could [TS]

00:29:37   tell like like everyone else in this [TS]

00:29:39   town it's a hard life like these are [TS]

00:29:41   hardworking people there you know [TS]

00:29:43   everything is not perfectly clean they [TS]

00:29:45   tried to make the best home they can in [TS]

00:29:47   what looks like the ruins of a city that [TS]

00:29:49   they didn't build the buildings of the [TS]

00:29:50   side of a cliff just such a flavor for [TS]

00:29:53   for everything involved even though like [TS]

00:29:55   that town is not going to be part of [TS]

00:29:56   this movie for long like we will leave [TS]

00:29:58   this setting but it's what you get you [TS]

00:30:00   get so much out of the the community [TS]

00:30:02   part also we should give a shout-out [TS]

00:30:03   without enlist in the dub trust McNeil [TS]

00:30:05   said her name [TS]

00:30:06   the woman does all the voices on like [TS]

00:30:07   futurama in the simpsons yeah and she's [TS]

00:30:09   so good in that small role but also just [TS]

00:30:11   the way the whole like there's a sense [TS]

00:30:12   of community pride and like wanting to [TS]

00:30:14   protect you know these people and kind [TS]

00:30:17   of the honor of the community they throw [TS]

00:30:19   everything ya need or throws it was [TS]

00:30:21   going throws a grenade at like a German [TS]

00:30:23   looking like i got like a potato masher [TS]

00:30:25   heart it's not a potato masher it's not [TS]

00:30:27   gonna like again totally realistically [TS]

00:30:30   rendered but you know that it's not [TS]

00:30:31   actually going to kill anybody with [TS]

00:30:32   shrapnel because this type of movies is [TS]

00:30:35   that everyone will see it and go whoa [TS]

00:30:36   there are no way they'll be a big orange [TS]

00:30:37   explosion everyone will be fine again [TS]

00:30:39   this really weird balance with these [TS]

00:30:41   photorealistic weapons and and nobody [TS]

00:30:43   getting hurt and then it ends with like [TS]

00:30:46   with them all hiding under covers and [TS]

00:30:47   what you've got the spy planes all of [TS]

00:30:49   the spy planes going around like we got [TS]

00:30:51   this government planes making an ominous [TS]

00:30:53   noise almost silently overhead and dola [TS]

00:30:56   for the millionth time is the is the [TS]

00:30:58   smart one that she she's the one who [TS]

00:31:01   knows stay undercover and the kids are [TS]

00:31:03   like oh the coast is clear we can leave [TS]

00:31:05   in a course they trapped they caught [TS]

00:31:06   right now the only thing that bugs me [TS]

00:31:08   about the sequences that the the [TS]

00:31:10   animation on the characters sometimes it [TS]

00:31:11   dips into that anime wackiness thing [TS]

00:31:14   where I guess it might be the squash and [TS]

00:31:16   stretch that you were referring to [TS]

00:31:17   before they're like like Looney Tunes [TS]

00:31:19   cartoons they were their legs [TS]

00:31:21   exaggerated like this suddenly they're [TS]

00:31:22   made of jello yeah they're like stomping [TS]

00:31:24   their feet and weirdly slow-motion [TS]

00:31:26   sometimes like when they get here with a [TS]

00:31:27   shovel it's like it one-third speed with [TS]

00:31:30   the grin on their face it's so odd [TS]

00:31:32   yeah like that's when they purposely go [TS]

00:31:34   again with the put the punching thing [TS]

00:31:35   where they both punch each other in the [TS]

00:31:36   stomach and make big expressions and you [TS]

00:31:38   might as well see a giant beetle sweat [TS]

00:31:39   appear on their they don't go that far [TS]

00:31:41   but like a lot of the animatrix come in [TS]

00:31:43   and they'll slide right back to [TS]

00:31:45   completely you know realistic sort of [TS]

00:31:48   kinky style animation for other [TS]

00:31:49   sequences like when they're having lunch [TS]

00:31:50   in the tunnel but when it comes to the [TS]

00:31:51   action scenes suddenly become a made of [TS]

00:31:54   rubber again so I fall down in the in [TS]

00:31:56   the pit and and the end are saved by the [TS]

00:31:59   glowing and the crystal and they meet [TS]

00:32:02   uncle palm who lives down in the caves [TS]

00:32:05   for whatever can see you clearly at [TS]

00:32:07   goblin and and they learned that if they [TS]

00:32:10   turn off all the lights the the rocks [TS]

00:32:13   down there in the mines glow and it [TS]

00:32:15   looks like looks like stars or something [TS]

00:32:17   and this is etherium the material that [TS]

00:32:20   her her necklace is made out of these [TS]

00:32:23   are just sort of trace amounts in the [TS]

00:32:24   rocks [TS]

00:32:25   I I markdown that with all that glowing [TS]

00:32:27   all around them in this in the rocks [TS]

00:32:29   it seems like it seems a little [TS]

00:32:31   dangerous like that sits with radium [TS]

00:32:33   everybody if no no don't don't but it's [TS]

00:32:36   ok anyway the floating city had ethereal [TS]

00:32:39   that's why they can squash and stretch [TS]

00:32:40   now they've been living in a nuclear [TS]

00:32:42   waste dump for the last 50 years the [TS]

00:32:45   etherium thing I remember thinking the [TS]

00:32:47   first time through that I really liked [TS]

00:32:49   etherium because [TS]

00:32:50   the opening sequence with like the [TS]

00:32:52   little title cards in the different [TS]

00:32:53   style showing these ridiculous that like [TS]

00:32:56   giant floating you know castles in the [TS]

00:32:58   sky with big lazy propellers you like [TS]

00:33:01   those propellers well couldn't make [TS]

00:33:03   those things float that's that doesn't [TS]

00:33:04   make any sense like why even bother [TS]

00:33:06   having the propellers are probably [TS]

00:33:07   practicing like oh it's not the [TS]

00:33:09   propellers that are making it throws the [TS]

00:33:10   etherium that's making it float the [TS]

00:33:12   theorem is Magic the powers are just [TS]

00:33:14   there for steering and aesthetics and [TS]

00:33:16   suddenly the world is coherent within [TS]

00:33:19   within his real assistant because none [TS]

00:33:21   of them not depressing stuff makes sense [TS]

00:33:23   and if you look at the modern things all [TS]

00:33:25   the modern devices they don't have a [TS]

00:33:26   theory and they're all they're all [TS]

00:33:27   dirigibles of some kind they're all big [TS]

00:33:29   there you know lighter-than-air craft [TS]

00:33:30   with a bunch of crap strap to them [TS]

00:33:32   because they don't have a theorem and so [TS]

00:33:34   all their vehicles look I mean maybe not [TS]

00:33:36   realistic because you have these hot-air [TS]

00:33:38   balloons or you know helium-filled [TS]

00:33:40   things or whatever they're supposed to [TS]

00:33:41   be with tons of iron strapped to it but [TS]

00:33:43   you know we'll get some creative license [TS]

00:33:45   but i like that it is a system that [TS]

00:33:47   makes sense instead of just saying oh [TS]

00:33:48   castles float and these propellers do it [TS]

00:33:51   now remember we had that the propellers [TS]

00:33:53   are there because miyazaki will put a [TS]

00:33:54   propeller on anytime your propellant [TS]

00:33:56   belhaj yeah they're on a bike [TS]

00:33:59   I don't get a windmill a windmill put it [TS]

00:34:02   on the field and make somebody stand [TS]

00:34:03   next to it its propellers all the way [TS]

00:34:05   down we also learned that shita is a [TS]

00:34:07   princess ? because how my god those [TS]

00:34:11   orphans materials and their she's a [TS]

00:34:13   secret princess [TS]

00:34:14   it's a disney movie I don't do you [TS]

00:34:15   listen to tal la puta she is actually [TS]

00:34:18   from the mythical but not after all [TS]

00:34:22   floating city of la pita I want I want a [TS]

00:34:25   name like a board a story that's a clean [TS]

00:34:27   here now we'll hear another one of those [TS]

00:34:29   late-night disney movie wouldn't have [TS]

00:34:31   had the scene where shita is on her farm [TS]

00:34:33   hang out with the axe the blue y axis [TS]

00:34:35   wherever they are doing her chores right [TS]

00:34:37   and then that like that again with a [TS]

00:34:40   realistic framing like this is right out [TS]

00:34:42   of like an adult movie that the [TS]

00:34:44   beautiful hill and the four men walking [TS]

00:34:47   up from the distance that's all you need [TS]

00:34:48   to see to know she's being kidnapped by [TS]

00:34:51   men by serious men in suits right well I [TS]

00:34:55   don't you kind of need the part at the [TS]

00:34:56   end where positive says so you were [TS]

00:34:58   kidnapped because i didn't get that at [TS]

00:35:00   all actually said that right but they [TS]

00:35:02   don't they don't go through the [TS]

00:35:02   kidnapping [TS]

00:35:03   scene they don't see the struggle is [TS]

00:35:04   just in the distance for a uniformed men [TS]

00:35:07   walking up and her looking at them it's [TS]

00:35:09   like a we don't need to show any of that [TS]

00:35:11   nastiness just like we didn't need to [TS]

00:35:13   show the colonel thomas dolby get conked [TS]

00:35:16   on the head with a wine bottle earlier [TS]

00:35:18   we cut away from that that's right the [TS]

00:35:20   UH let's see so so now we know that [TS]

00:35:22   she's got her her royal lineage and that [TS]

00:35:26   la la the the pottses father insisted [TS]

00:35:29   was real is real talk about Uncle palm [TS]

00:35:33   for just a second were first I was like [TS]

00:35:35   he's really cool and then I'm like wait [TS]

00:35:37   is he actually gone take away the [TS]

00:35:40   precious i don't want to see the [TS]

00:35:42   pressure that's all it'll be rating them [TS]

00:35:44   that radium tearing him up he's got the [TS]

00:35:46   marie curie problem [TS]

00:35:47   it's ok he sees goblins and he talks to [TS]

00:35:50   rocks sometimes also power he's used to [TS]

00:35:52   low levels of etherium and that is just [TS]

00:35:54   it's too much you can't even taste [TS]

00:35:55   strong but he's lying he's like reaching [TS]

00:35:58   for it in his hand is shaking and you're [TS]

00:35:59   thinking oh he is galloping yeah but no [TS]

00:36:03   he's just he's a he's a friendly old [TS]

00:36:05   talking to rocks guy yea he's not all [TS]

00:36:08   there but he's he's a friendly enough [TS]

00:36:09   dude [TS]

00:36:10   so when we could get shita one of the [TS]

00:36:11   things that happens is there is our [TS]

00:36:14   first view of a robot that is the [TS]

00:36:16   coolest robot designed by the way my [TS]

00:36:19   love and i could not love that robot [TS]

00:36:20   more i love the kind of flexible design [TS]

00:36:24   of the arms and the super-long arms that [TS]

00:36:26   turn into wings and just it's something [TS]

00:36:28   super creepy and cool about that [TS]

00:36:29   although he does kind of look like he [TS]

00:36:31   should be standing out in front of a car [TS]

00:36:32   dealership a giant-sized one in the [TS]

00:36:36   studio ghibli museum in Japan like I'd [TS]

00:36:39   full-size metal statue of it looks very [TS]

00:36:41   impressive look nice this whole setup of [TS]

00:36:43   like where where they kidnapped you like [TS]

00:36:45   this sort of castle / military base such [TS]

00:36:49   a great look it said you know sort of [TS]

00:36:51   exaggerated medieval castle mixed with [TS]

00:36:54   like world war two bunker and and pods [TS]

00:36:57   in the in the little dungeon where the [TS]

00:36:59   door is two feet up off the ground and [TS]

00:37:01   tries to squeeze himself through like a [TS]

00:37:02   little archery slit that leads on to the [TS]

00:37:05   parade grounds for the soldiers are [TS]

00:37:06   marching such atmosphere again [TS]

00:37:09   total total removed from like the weird [TS]

00:37:11   mining town [TS]

00:37:12   into this which will soon see wrecked in [TS]

00:37:15   another great action scene but I i just [TS]

00:37:18   love everything this is the thing we [TS]

00:37:20   talked about before like the combination [TS]

00:37:21   of multiple of Earth cultures from the [TS]

00:37:25   past as as invented imagined by Japanese [TS]

00:37:29   people is always delightful [TS]

00:37:31   yeah i agree and i do love this robot [TS]

00:37:33   one of the things about the robot design [TS]

00:37:35   that I really like is that I think when [TS]

00:37:37   rendered if you rendered it [TS]

00:37:38   realistically you would entirely lose [TS]

00:37:41   its it you entirely lose its charm i [TS]

00:37:46   think because i think its charm is that [TS]

00:37:47   it is a dream it's a it's an animated [TS]

00:37:49   robot it's a drawing of a robot and I [TS]

00:37:52   think I think you can see like i love [TS]

00:37:55   how the arms hanging down like and [TS]

00:37:57   that's the thing that I think it was [TS]

00:37:58   rendered realistically it would look [TS]

00:38:00   dumb but the way that it's wrong it's [TS]

00:38:02   just beautiful [TS]

00:38:03   it's it's yeah that also allows it to [TS]

00:38:05   move on four limbs in a way that is [TS]

00:38:07   extremely creepy and really cool looking [TS]

00:38:09   right at it doesn't it doesn't uh it [TS]

00:38:12   doesn't squash and stretch for the most [TS]

00:38:13   part it bike its face is entirely nerd [TS]

00:38:15   it doesn't blink it has two differently [TS]

00:38:17   shaped and sized eyes and they're all of [TS]

00:38:20   its emotion is expressed through body [TS]

00:38:22   language and to blinking red lights [TS]

00:38:24   that's pretty great i love the way it's [TS]

00:38:26   animated to when it's a when its kind of [TS]

00:38:28   testing out the fact that it's missing [TS]

00:38:29   part of its arm and one of its feet [TS]

00:38:32   yes I guess it's kind of its kind of [TS]

00:38:34   identifying the fact that this piece is [TS]

00:38:36   missing and it's got to kind of adjust a [TS]

00:38:38   little bit and clearly it doesn't do it [TS]

00:38:39   completely properly because it has some [TS]

00:38:41   trouble flying around when it swings get [TS]

00:38:44   out initially but just that the whole [TS]

00:38:46   dynamic of that is really cool but I [TS]

00:38:49   draw the insides of it like this you can [TS]

00:38:51   see it with the broken up arm the inside [TS]

00:38:52   of the right like look like a person's [TS]

00:38:54   guts but it's still all clearly [TS]

00:38:56   mechanical like this that fine line of [TS]

00:38:58   like it an organic robot like what if [TS]

00:39:00   what if organic beings were made of [TS]

00:39:02   metal instead of four [TS]

00:39:03   if we don't know whether it's metal or [TS]

00:39:04   ceramic is that the two choices but like [TS]

00:39:09   it as you know living things as [TS]

00:39:11   envisioned made of something other than [TS]

00:39:12   flesh and [TS]

00:39:14   you know it does such a great job both [TS]

00:39:16   here and later of being convincingly [TS]

00:39:19   advanced like so clearly this technology [TS]

00:39:22   is beyond the people who found like the [TS]

00:39:24   short falling from the sky with a [TS]

00:39:26   stylized animation on to the farmers [TS]

00:39:27   right this is so clearly super advanced [TS]

00:39:30   tech they have no idea how it works but [TS]

00:39:32   at the same time it also looks like old [TS]

00:39:34   and steampunk right like it's it's so [TS]

00:39:36   confusing to them like they don't [TS]

00:39:38   understand they think it's dead they [TS]

00:39:39   don't understand it works its weapons [TS]

00:39:40   are so much more powerful than the other [TS]

00:39:42   weapons thats just one this one gardener [TS]

00:39:44   robot or whatever the hell it was [TS]

00:39:45   I could have been one of the common ones [TS]

00:39:47   i suppose but it doesn't look like it's [TS]

00:39:50   not it doesn't look like all techno [TS]

00:39:52   metal like sci-fi future as we would [TS]

00:39:55   imagine so to us it looks old but to [TS]

00:39:57   them it's super-advanced i love i love [TS]

00:39:58   it's near indestructibility and and the [TS]

00:40:01   havoc it wreaks on the entire army this [TS]

00:40:02   one [TS]

00:40:03   pour half broken robot yeah I think that [TS]

00:40:05   was the thing that spoke to me the most [TS]

00:40:07   was just how effective it was at him [TS]

00:40:11   burning and bashing and killing like [TS]

00:40:13   everything that I mean more than [TS]

00:40:16   anything else yes the technology looks [TS]

00:40:18   really you know advanced as compared to [TS]

00:40:20   the you know [TS]

00:40:21   steampunk city with the wooden bridges [TS]

00:40:23   that fall down when you drive over them [TS]

00:40:24   but the fact that all i had to do was [TS]

00:40:26   just basically point it's little head [TS]

00:40:28   and shoots laser beam out and just [TS]

00:40:29   suddenly things are erupting into flame [TS]

00:40:31   and by the end of everything has erupted [TS]

00:40:33   into flames I was like okay this [TS]

00:40:35   perfectly illustrates how advanced these [TS]

00:40:37   you know Latin people must have been and [TS]

00:40:40   and the kind of thing that these two [TS]

00:40:42   kids are about to get themselves into in [TS]

00:40:44   their adventure looking for this place [TS]

00:40:46   like wow you kids have bit off perhaps [TS]

00:40:48   more than you can chew which just [TS]

00:40:49   ratchet up the tension and was [TS]

00:40:51   delightful and this this is another is [TS]

00:40:53   another action scene and this is a shift [TS]

00:40:57   i think into alright so we've got [TS]

00:40:59   realistic-looking guns and we've got the [TS]

00:41:00   potato masher grenade and we got [TS]

00:41:02   fistfights but really no one gets hurt [TS]

00:41:04   and this this bring it brings it up [TS]

00:41:07   another level where there you know the [TS]

00:41:09   music is more ominous there's flames [TS]

00:41:11   everywhere there's not as much cartoon [TS]

00:41:14   cartoon violence is more like regular [TS]

00:41:17   rounds you really see people burning to [TS]

00:41:18   death or dying but you see people [TS]

00:41:19   screaming you see a lot of flames and [TS]

00:41:22   for both of my kids this was a very [TS]

00:41:23   intense scene in the first few times my [TS]

00:41:25   daughter watches we should not make it [TS]

00:41:27   past the scene and for many many years [TS]

00:41:29   this was known as the robot movie can i [TS]

00:41:31   see the robot she eventually watch it [TS]

00:41:33   through and became one of her favorite [TS]

00:41:34   movies you watch it over and over again [TS]

00:41:36   essentially like you wouldn't think i'll [TS]

00:41:38   cast Muscat it's the robot movie but to [TS]

00:41:39   my daughter this is absolutely the robot [TS]

00:41:41   moment yeah it's kind of amazing that [TS]

00:41:43   with as as little emoting as the thing [TS]

00:41:45   is able to do i actually wrote down when [TS]

00:41:48   it gets destroyed haha or in [TS]

00:41:49   discriminately descriptive giant robot I [TS]

00:41:51   know just trying to protect his princess [TS]

00:41:55   this is the big turn for she's right [TS]

00:41:57   she's not going to stimulate you know [TS]

00:41:58   that what's-his-name a most got tries to [TS]

00:42:00   give her like dresses and stuff and and [TS]

00:42:02   you know we need you to work the crystal [TS]

00:42:04   because we're not sure you know he he's [TS]

00:42:06   playing out his plot and rather being [TS]

00:42:08   captured and plied with dresses is it [TS]

00:42:10   such a stereotypical thing but it's a [TS]

00:42:13   complete role reversal what happens here [TS]

00:42:14   because normally what happens is the [TS]

00:42:16   girl is is trapped somewhere and the [TS]

00:42:18   hero sacrifices himself says i don't [TS]

00:42:20   care what you don't care what you do to [TS]

00:42:22   me I'll help you with your evil plot [TS]

00:42:24   just let the girl go and the girl goes [TS]

00:42:26   free and and the male hero sacrifices [TS]

00:42:28   himself to you know is that that's all [TS]

00:42:31   he cares about to protect it [TS]

00:42:32   she does that for him and says I will [TS]

00:42:35   deal whatever i'll do the deal just let [TS]

00:42:38   pots to go and he comes out of done is [TS]

00:42:40   what I'm ready to fight gone it's like I [TS]

00:42:41   actually you know you can go free she's [TS]

00:42:43   gonna help everything's fine she plays [TS]

00:42:44   it up like no it's good i'm fine here [TS]

00:42:46   you can go and he leaves of course he's [TS]

00:42:49   all crushed because he doesn't feel like [TS]

00:42:50   you know it feels like he couldn't save [TS]

00:42:53   her [TS]

00:42:53   he doesn't try probably buy that she [TS]

00:42:55   wasn't but she she makes a choice there [TS]

00:42:57   she makes a heroic choice sacrifices [TS]

00:43:00   herself and it's the exact opposite of [TS]

00:43:02   the same movie you see a million other [TS]

00:43:03   movies and again the first many times I [TS]

00:43:05   saw it [TS]

00:43:06   well I couldn't get over the fact that [TS]

00:43:07   she was just being held prisoner in this [TS]

00:43:08   castle by the bad guy which is just so [TS]

00:43:10   stereotypical but it's really actually [TS]

00:43:13   less conventional than that and i think [TS]

00:43:16   it plays pretty well because even though [TS]

00:43:17   they do the reversal that both of their [TS]

00:43:19   reactions to the situation are not what [TS]

00:43:22   you expect she cries in the tower after [TS]

00:43:24   after making this decision because she's [TS]

00:43:26   upset about it should now she'd made the [TS]

00:43:29   sacrifice but it's tough to make [TS]

00:43:30   sacrifices and he runs away and he's [TS]

00:43:32   dejected because even though he is free [TS]

00:43:34   he doesn't feel that he's been saved [TS]

00:43:35   because he feels like it's his [TS]

00:43:37   responsibility as gender role too [TS]

00:43:39   protect her and so they're both they're [TS]

00:43:41   both stuck in the opposite roles and [TS]

00:43:42   both the characters in movies know it [TS]

00:43:44   and I just don't handle it well they're [TS]

00:43:46   like can we be in start a stereotypical [TS]

00:43:48   fairytale wear these roles reversed I [TS]

00:43:49   feel much more comfortable but the [TS]

00:43:51   answer is no they both act like kids [TS]

00:43:53   would act in that situation to my senses [TS]

00:43:55   yeah she's sort of manipulated into into [TS]

00:43:59   believing that the safest thing is to [TS]

00:44:01   send a way possible [TS]

00:44:02   katsu for his own good and he you know [TS]

00:44:06   his response when he's being told to get [TS]

00:44:08   the hell out is well okay if that's how [TS]

00:44:10   you feel and I'm out of here we go but [TS]

00:44:11   he's gonna give him the money and he's [TS]

00:44:13   so bitter about the money he's gonna [TS]

00:44:15   throw it away but of course he's a poor [TS]

00:44:17   kid so we can actually throw it away [TS]

00:44:19   like his pride is hurt right because he [TS]

00:44:21   expects to be the hero because I mean [TS]

00:44:23   even dola throws in his face because [TS]

00:44:24   they're waiting for me back in this [TS]

00:44:25   house that I go I guess you couldn't [TS]

00:44:27   save her right he doesn't he doesn't [TS]

00:44:28   take the money as a bribe he takes the [TS]

00:44:30   money because he's he's clearly in some [TS]

00:44:32   form of shock during that whole speech [TS]

00:44:34   right not like he's like okay fine I'll [TS]

00:44:36   take the money and you go ahead and do [TS]

00:44:37   whatever you want with right guys he's [TS]

00:44:38   walking home he's like it was going to [TS]

00:44:40   throw the money off the cliff but then [TS]

00:44:42   he can't he can't do it because you [TS]

00:44:43   can't throw away that kind of money [TS]

00:44:44   might have taken that was much much [TS]

00:44:46   simpler and and not as politically [TS]

00:44:48   advance to as much more of like I have [TS]

00:44:50   this new friend and i have either let [TS]

00:44:53   them down and/or they have been left an [TS]

00:44:56   impression that is you know that i did [TS]

00:44:58   not have a role in how this thing turned [TS]

00:45:00   out and now this person's gonna hate me [TS]

00:45:01   that was more i read it was a double [TS]

00:45:04   throws in his face is all I guess you [TS]

00:45:06   couldn't save her took the money and ran [TS]

00:45:07   didn't she is Rush album roaming in his [TS]

00:45:10   worst fear is worse fear is that he that [TS]

00:45:12   he didn't do all he could do and that he [TS]

00:45:14   feels like he was expected to he does [TS]

00:45:16   not you have been saved her but I mean [TS]

00:45:19   when you look at the the society likey [TS]

00:45:21   yes they are sort of doing the opposite [TS]

00:45:24   gender role things that you would expect [TS]

00:45:25   but I think the reason that shita is is [TS]

00:45:28   a special character is because of the [TS]

00:45:32   fact that she does something different [TS]

00:45:33   this world has very stereotypical gender [TS]

00:45:36   roles they even call it out that you [TS]

00:45:38   know but now we're talking about do [TS]

00:45:40   later on [TS]

00:45:41   well your female you know you because [TS]

00:45:43   you're doing all this stuff i should be [TS]

00:45:44   able to fly the kite too so I I'd while [TS]

00:45:48   it's nice that she is is doing things [TS]

00:45:50   that are are not necessarily [TS]

00:45:52   the stereotypical you know that [TS]

00:45:53   princessy things to do the fact that [TS]

00:45:56   she's doing them is really if she's [TS]

00:45:59   she's special for that it's not that the [TS]

00:46:01   society is advanced [TS]

00:46:03   oh yeah no that's what i was getting at [TS]

00:46:04   like that that both of them have the [TS]

00:46:06   same general expectation that you would [TS]

00:46:07   expect but the events don't let them [TS]

00:46:10   thaw it into there and it is [TS]

00:46:11   disconcerting to all involved i came in [TS]

00:46:14   like even dollar running around people [TS]

00:46:16   aren't that comfortable with our main [TS]

00:46:18   she's their mom and like the husband's [TS]

00:46:20   they're down there in the engineering [TS]

00:46:21   and like you said they bring it up in [TS]

00:46:23   the things like wait a second you're [TS]

00:46:24   gross like well yeah I guess like it [TS]

00:46:26   they are against the structure of the [TS]

00:46:28   rest of the world and it is [TS]

00:46:29   uncomfortable for them there they are [TS]

00:46:31   people of their time in place put into [TS]

00:46:33   situations that that don't fit which i [TS]

00:46:35   think it is the best thing you can do in [TS]

00:46:37   these types of movies are rather than [TS]

00:46:39   just pretend imitate even an osmosian [TS]

00:46:41   doesn't like where she's she's very [TS]

00:46:43   conservative person in that movie but [TS]

00:46:45   she is expected to fill these roles as [TS]

00:46:48   the princess as the leader of the people [TS]

00:46:49   as the the you know the girl that all [TS]

00:46:52   the the killed the children gather [TS]

00:46:54   around its I think it works better when [TS]

00:46:57   you show a character doing something [TS]

00:47:00   different [TS]

00:47:01   despite the fact that the entire [TS]

00:47:02   surrounding world has different [TS]

00:47:04   expectations yeah I feel like in this [TS]

00:47:05   scene neither one of them has any other [TS]

00:47:07   choice than to do what it is they do so [TS]

00:47:09   i'm not sure that you can really put a [TS]

00:47:11   lot of you know agency of them you know [TS]

00:47:15   changing up gender roles or anything of [TS]

00:47:17   that sort I mean what is she gonna do [TS]

00:47:19   she's clearly surrounded by a bunch of [TS]

00:47:22   adults who can basically tell her what [TS]

00:47:25   to do and shoot her if she gets out of [TS]

00:47:27   hand and he's in the same boat i mean [TS]

00:47:29   he's just been released from a dungeon [TS]

00:47:31   so well if you decide to sex rider in it [TS]

00:47:33   and what you would expect to happen is [TS]

00:47:35   he breaks out a dungeon and save [TS]

00:47:36   certainly make their escape [TS]

00:47:37   perhaps I guess one of the things I like [TS]

00:47:39   in here is that in this section of the [TS]

00:47:41   film is that we've got this idea that [TS]

00:47:44   the secrets of the floating city have [TS]

00:47:47   been passed down from generation to [TS]

00:47:49   generation using an it's an oral [TS]

00:47:52   tradition because it turns out that that [TS]

00:47:54   she knows secret words and phrases and [TS]

00:47:58   poems that have power when combined with [TS]

00:48:01   the crystal and you know she uses the [TS]

00:48:04   the dad to the awakened the robot and [TS]

00:48:08   later we see more of that I think that's [TS]

00:48:10   kind of fun the idea that that you're [TS]

00:48:12   uncovering her legacy and it's not just [TS]

00:48:14   that she's discovering that she's [TS]

00:48:16   royalty on this uh on this floating city [TS]

00:48:18   but that some of these funny things her [TS]

00:48:20   grandmother told her are actually like [TS]

00:48:22   super important powerful secret things I [TS]

00:48:25   think that's very cool [TS]

00:48:26   that brings up another question I have [TS]

00:48:28   about the the subtitling because the way [TS]

00:48:30   it was subtitled in the version i [TS]

00:48:31   watched she refers to those that is [TS]

00:48:33   spells and I always thought it was very [TS]

00:48:35   weird that her grandmother's teaching [TS]

00:48:37   her purse spells it is it different in a [TS]

00:48:42   different version or is that actually [TS]

00:48:43   the closest thing that again but i think [TS]

00:48:46   it's that spells because I i bet that is [TS]

00:48:48   the most reasonable translation of the [TS]

00:48:50   japanese word but i don't i don't think [TS]

00:48:52   it has the same cultural connotations [TS]

00:48:54   whatever the original Japanese world is [TS]

00:48:56   doesn't that you don't mean like direct [TS]

00:48:58   translation be always like a spell but [TS]

00:49:00   it's not like a spell because when we [TS]

00:49:01   hear that we think magicians casting [TS]

00:49:03   spells so I'm willing to the kind of [TS]

00:49:05   thing you tell a little kid when you're [TS]

00:49:07   trying to comfort them on something each [TS]

00:49:08   other it's a magic spell and if you say [TS]

00:49:10   it you'll feel better [TS]

00:49:11   well I kind of is I mean there is magic [TS]

00:49:13   in this world and these words that you [TS]

00:49:15   know this is this is another common [TS]

00:49:16   thing like that you learn a song and [TS]

00:49:17   childhood the turns out to be a special [TS]

00:49:19   magical incantation and you know like [TS]

00:49:20   this is all straightforward stuff but uh [TS]

00:49:23   yeah I'm totally willing to go along [TS]

00:49:25   with this and it's easy even though it's [TS]

00:49:27   a trope and I and spells I I kind of [TS]

00:49:31   like it when i watch japanese movies [TS]

00:49:33   where they do the most direct literal [TS]

00:49:35   translation even if it seems super weird [TS]

00:49:37   because I get to imagine that I'm [TS]

00:49:39   actually hearing the Japanese and I [TS]

00:49:40   could say okay well don't think that is [TS]

00:49:42   what the word actually is an English [TS]

00:49:43   just said like this is their direct [TS]

00:49:45   translation of what the words were and [TS]

00:49:47   then turn that into what you think they [TS]

00:49:49   were trying to say like make up some [TS]

00:49:50   cultural background that you don't [TS]

00:49:51   understand for which is basically what I [TS]

00:49:53   did let me do the work myself I'll [TS]

00:49:54   figure it out i mean i'm already reading [TS]

00:49:56   the subtitles guys it's not like I just [TS]

00:49:57   want to sit back and watch a dub exactly [TS]

00:50:00   i have to go back to the scene where [TS]

00:50:01   dole is reading is reading positive the [TS]

00:50:03   riot act for for letting shita saying [TS]

00:50:06   anything at giant ham [TS]

00:50:07   yeah well maybe on the giant ham which [TS]

00:50:10   is also which is also great i mean it's [TS]

00:50:12   not ladylike how to open a lobster you [TS]

00:50:14   don't always see them [TS]

00:50:15   no lady she's apparently lady / cloud [TS]

00:50:18   but yeah i mean this this right here is [TS]

00:50:21   the big turning point for the Pirates [TS]

00:50:22   because up until this moment you know [TS]

00:50:25   their characters and their bad guys and [TS]

00:50:28   the thing that changes here is is dola [TS]

00:50:32   is swayed by positives determination to [TS]

00:50:34   protect sheet after she's kind of read [TS]

00:50:36   him the riot act about leaving her and [TS]

00:50:38   and she makes out at this point like [TS]

00:50:40   she's bringing them along just because [TS]

00:50:41   he can help make sure to cooperate but [TS]

00:50:43   it's clear from the look on her face [TS]

00:50:45   that she's actually touched by his his [TS]

00:50:47   willingness to want to save her is the [TS]

00:50:49   star with a heart of gold [TS]

00:50:50   there's only I mean it's distant a huge [TS]

00:50:52   change that happens here I mean it's [TS]

00:50:53   kind of the hinge point of the movie for [TS]

00:50:55   me at least I mean you can see all that [TS]

00:50:56   in her once you watching movies [TS]

00:50:58   obviously thats all from the beginning [TS]

00:50:59   to use don't know the number like you [TS]

00:51:01   did the sons are all still goofy and [TS]

00:51:03   they're goofy through the whole movie [TS]

00:51:03   but she is the smart one she is the one [TS]

00:51:05   who understands the the tactics and and [TS]

00:51:08   knows how to negotiate the battle [TS]

00:51:09   between the army and the spies and all [TS]

00:51:12   that other stuff and they're you know as [TS]

00:51:14   we will see later scenes there is much [TS]

00:51:16   more depth are ya then you would think [TS]

00:51:18   she has depth which sets her apart my [TS]

00:51:21   memory of this film from five years ago [TS]

00:51:23   I had her and her but her boys as much [TS]

00:51:26   more wacky and slapstick then they are i [TS]

00:51:28   mean the boys are wacky and slapstick [TS]

00:51:30   and they really like desert by the way [TS]

00:51:32   they're very enthusiastic i get to lick [TS]

00:51:36   the spatula dessert but but dola mom [TS]

00:51:39   mama is uh she is a very interesting [TS]

00:51:43   character and not a you know zany wacky [TS]

00:51:45   character at all she's got much more [TS]

00:51:47   going on which I really like the robot [TS]

00:51:49   blows a bunch stuff up by the way at [TS]

00:51:52   about this point in the movie and [TS]

00:51:54   there's the Army and the robot and the [TS]

00:51:55   major plot point that happens here is [TS]

00:51:57   mush could get the necklace and they're [TS]

00:52:00   going to take the their big army airship [TS]

00:52:03   the Goliath and find lap utah and [TS]

00:52:06   meanwhile everybody else goes back with [TS]

00:52:08   mom the boys to the biggest mother ship [TS]

00:52:12   mother ship her own ship and head him [TS]

00:52:16   off [TS]

00:52:16   it is a mom-and-pop operation it turns [TS]

00:52:18   out because pop is like tinkering with [TS]

00:52:20   stuff in the ship that is a mole man [TS]

00:52:22   stop yelling at me [TS]

00:52:23   he says the guy from spirited away [TS]

00:52:27   there with multiple army in the belly [TS]

00:52:29   that's my favorite part about him is he [TS]

00:52:31   has a jug that it that is apparently [TS]

00:52:33   named Ben because it has been [TS]

00:52:35   yep oh and look at the they all of [TS]

00:52:39   Mama's boys love shita they try to give [TS]

00:52:41   them jobs but the boys are like hey I'll [TS]

00:52:44   let me help you with that and also [TS]

00:52:46   they'll love to sort when you put on [TS]

00:52:47   gigantic bloomers it makes you utterly [TS]

00:52:50   irresistible to men place your age [TS]

00:52:51   that's pretty well known pirate Rosen [TS]

00:52:53   has to put our moms clothes and like the [TS]

00:52:55   size of a tent [TS]

00:52:56   yeah yeah they fit her pretty well as it [TS]

00:52:59   turns out though but somehow they found [TS]

00:53:00   a shirt that was a little yellow shirt [TS]

00:53:02   that's perfect and the but the pants are [TS]

00:53:04   not that's dad's yeah maybe so [TS]

00:53:06   and this is where we see those gender [TS]

00:53:08   roles again where she's put in the [TS]

00:53:10   kitchen and was like okay you go you're [TS]

00:53:12   cooking five times a day these these [TS]

00:53:13   boys get hungry [TS]

00:53:14   although she does she does resist in [TS]

00:53:16   that wonderful scene where I mean this [TS]

00:53:18   section the movie is really great [TS]

00:53:19   because you've got all the climb [TS]

00:53:20   climbing around all over this airship [TS]

00:53:22   and all that but she she where she kind [TS]

00:53:25   of like refuses and basically climbs up [TS]

00:53:26   to the top of the airship to see pots [TS]

00:53:28   ooh she's not gonna she's not going to [TS]

00:53:30   shrink from it [TS]

00:53:31   yep you know about you in this thing the [TS]

00:53:32   dad is sort of the you know the sort of [TS]

00:53:35   countdown he's in the engine room with [TS]

00:53:37   this yes and she's the leader of the [TS]

00:53:39   Titans his only friend and the ship but [TS]

00:53:42   she gets shot right into the kitchen [TS]

00:53:43   right and then and she does come out [TS]

00:53:44   again later with the kite flying thing [TS]

00:53:46   you notice is all you can't do that it's [TS]

00:53:48   not even even dollars going to us not [TS]

00:53:50   that's not a thing for girls like what [TS]

00:53:51   what are you talking about you're in [TS]

00:53:52   charge of the whole ship he's like yeah [TS]

00:53:54   but she's she's clearly saying that to [TS]

00:53:55   prod her into doing it anyway [TS]

00:53:57   yeah i don't i don't know it's hard it's [TS]

00:53:59   hard to say but I feel like dola is a [TS]

00:54:00   creature of the same society with all [TS]

00:54:02   these same roles and she just somehow [TS]

00:54:04   doesn't see herself she sees herself as [TS]

00:54:06   a man essentially in this world because [TS]

00:54:07   him [TS]

00:54:08   she's in charge but she totally accept [TS]

00:54:10   the roles like feel your little girl get [TS]

00:54:11   right into the kitchen [TS]

00:54:12   yeah this is um one of my favorite [TS]

00:54:14   little moments in this movie is when uh [TS]

00:54:17   when scheana and pots who are up on the [TS]

00:54:19   top of the of the ship is easy [TS]

00:54:22   he's taken over the watch and the other [TS]

00:54:23   guys a lot of detail here that's really [TS]

00:54:25   great to the the other guy is waiting [TS]

00:54:27   and they tell him to put on you know put [TS]

00:54:29   on a jacket because it's really cold up [TS]

00:54:30   there up there it's dark your loan it's [TS]

00:54:33   when any other guys like oh great you [TS]

00:54:34   know he's relieved to be off of duty and [TS]

00:54:36   then she goes up there and the the art [TS]

00:54:38   direction of just the details [TS]

00:54:40   this of this steampunk airship or so [TS]

00:54:44   it's so great and then there's that [TS]

00:54:46   moment where they are from up above the [TS]

00:54:50   cloud layer and like like a whale or a [TS]

00:54:54   shark or something down in the cloud [TS]

00:54:56   layer there's the realization that the [TS]

00:54:58   Goliath is right below them [TS]

00:55:00   that is a beautiful shot that I really [TS]

00:55:02   like and of course it's also a dramatic [TS]

00:55:03   moment the movie because it's like oh [TS]

00:55:05   the Goliath is here and then lots of [TS]

00:55:08   crazy stuff is in the nebula [TS]

00:55:10   yeah exactly what before that I want [TS]

00:55:11   that when they're up there on the thing [TS]

00:55:13   you got dola down there listening to [TS]

00:55:15   them oh god yeah the whole sequence [TS]

00:55:17   where oh yeah yeah I love that always [TS]

00:55:19   listening [TS]

00:55:20   she's listening in and the expressions [TS]

00:55:21   on your face then eventually going to [TS]

00:55:23   start getting to like the part where [TS]

00:55:24   they may be going to get all mushy she [TS]

00:55:26   she politely is about to like close the [TS]

00:55:29   thing and say okay well i'm not gonna [TS]

00:55:30   listen anymore out of privacy is such a [TS]

00:55:32   great because I'm having line she's just [TS]

00:55:33   there and you can hear expression and [TS]

00:55:35   look at her as she listened to them [TS]

00:55:37   because they're talking about her [TS]

00:55:38   they don't know she's listening but [TS]

00:55:39   she's just just listening to their [TS]

00:55:41   relationship and what they think of her [TS]

00:55:43   and everything like that and eventually [TS]

00:55:44   she's just like now just let them up [TS]

00:55:46   then you know that the client comes in [TS]

00:55:48   yeah thing that I think is what makes it [TS]

00:55:50   clear that they're supposed to be maybe [TS]

00:55:51   11 or 12 or so because there's so many [TS]

00:55:53   sequences where you know they put on the [TS]

00:55:56   same poncho or whatever to stay warm or [TS]

00:55:58   he picks her up and carries her off to [TS]

00:56:01   look over the edge on the Buddha and I [TS]

00:56:03   mean those are clear scenes where in [TS]

00:56:05   movies where they were slightly older [TS]

00:56:06   they would suddenly be like a romantic [TS]

00:56:08   moment or a moment of awkwardness right [TS]

00:56:10   but there's there's none of that all [TS]

00:56:11   they're just two friends looking at you [TS]

00:56:13   and then they get that reading skipped [TS]

00:56:14   over this but that highlights the [TS]

00:56:15   weirdness of the the sun's being all I [TS]

00:56:18   want to help cheetah and I think like [TS]

00:56:20   you're someone explain this attempt to [TS]

00:56:22   myself not because you see this in a lot [TS]

00:56:25   of Japanese movies the impression i get [TS]

00:56:27   as a complete outsider not knowing [TS]

00:56:28   anything about this is just having seen [TS]

00:56:30   a lot of Japanese animation that is more [TS]

00:56:33   accepted that that men will find young [TS]

00:56:37   girls beautiful not perhaps in like a [TS]

00:56:40   sexual way [TS]

00:56:41   although perhaps that way as well but in [TS]

00:56:43   general that it is that that's a hand [TS]

00:56:45   baby right men and so in this movie for [TS]

00:56:48   them to be comically head over heels for [TS]

00:56:50   wanting to help her in the kitchen which [TS]

00:56:52   is up as a funny scene of like everyone [TS]

00:56:53   the school wants to help out she was [TS]

00:56:55   going to be the one doing and she gets [TS]

00:56:56   puts them all to work but the fact that [TS]

00:56:58   they're all gaga over her doesn't make [TS]

00:57:00   sense to us for a Western perspective [TS]

00:57:02   but we see this amigo danger danger like [TS]

00:57:05   it's not this is not correct are [TS]

00:57:07   acceptable but in this movie it's played [TS]

00:57:09   as like well everybody knows this is a [TS]

00:57:12   thing and look isn't just a sweet [TS]

00:57:14   innocent in the same way that the two [TS]

00:57:16   are two leads are just sweet innocent [TS]

00:57:18   with each other hand and it is jarring [TS]

00:57:21   and it just it doesn't fit into my brain [TS]

00:57:24   or my expectations for anything and it's [TS]

00:57:27   it's creepy but because it's played so [TS]

00:57:30   matter-of-factly because I've seen it so [TS]

00:57:31   many times before and was like I guess [TS]

00:57:34   is they just think this is okay and it's [TS]

00:57:36   just expected [TS]

00:57:37   I don't know my hope is that these guys [TS]

00:57:40   are actually only supposed to be about [TS]

00:57:41   maybe 17 or 18 themselves so it's not as [TS]

00:57:44   I also really interesting it does a [TS]

00:57:46   little [TS]

00:57:47   I mean it depends on it depends on how [TS]

00:57:48   old they're weirdos and they're not very [TS]

00:57:51   bright and they live on a ship on an [TS]

00:57:53   airship with their mom and the only [TS]

00:57:55   woman in their life that they ever seen [TS]

00:57:57   and mom has clearly said when you get [TS]

00:58:01   married you need to find someone like [TS]

00:58:03   she tried sure right because she's mushy [TS]

00:58:06   like me so maybe they just [TS]

00:58:07   misinterpreted that [TS]

00:58:09   yeah she found the measure not very [TS]

00:58:11   bright to again but they really like [TS]

00:58:13   dessert is what I'm saying they're not [TS]

00:58:14   very bright but they really like deserve [TS]

00:58:16   these scenes really reminds me of [TS]

00:58:18   futurama with mom and her kids or three [TS]

00:58:21   times like I kept thinking about [TS]

00:58:24   futurama and so I think I have a little [TS]

00:58:26   bit of that headcanon that makes it okay [TS]

00:58:28   because in futurama those kids are [TS]

00:58:31   really messed up for a lot of reasons [TS]

00:58:33   and and so I think that I've got a [TS]

00:58:36   little bit of crossover in that that [TS]

00:58:37   makes it a little bit more okay in my [TS]

00:58:39   head but these are pirates were talking [TS]

00:58:41   about they're not good people [TS]

00:58:42   I mean and again in the movie she is not [TS]

00:58:45   fazed by this at all [TS]

00:58:47   she is not she's not intimidated or [TS]

00:58:49   scared or worried about she puts them to [TS]

00:58:51   work immediately [TS]

00:58:52   no because she sees it as a way to get [TS]

00:58:54   other people to peel the damn potatoes [TS]

00:58:56   right and she's smart she is she has [TS]

00:58:58   this daunting task and she rolled up her [TS]

00:59:00   sleeves and she gets to it and just [TS]

00:59:01   heard possible just so sweet together [TS]

00:59:04   again like there's never any any [TS]

00:59:05   romantic tension between them [TS]

00:59:07   we're just good friends who care about [TS]

00:59:09   each other if they never tease you with [TS]

00:59:11   anything more than that and it's just so [TS]

00:59:13   sweet and innocent that you know [TS]

00:59:15   especially from the respective a kid [TS]

00:59:16   watching we it all plays office [TS]

00:59:18   perfectly explicable and i would imagine [TS]

00:59:21   all that have not interrogating my kids [TS]

00:59:22   about that they it hasn't even occurred [TS]

00:59:24   to them to be creeped out in fact that [TS]

00:59:26   the bombs you know sons are all over [TS]

00:59:29   it's a cartoon and they're goofy and [TS]

00:59:31   that's I just let it go [TS]

00:59:33   I just don't think it's that it's all [TS]

00:59:35   there such caricatures yeah that's the [TS]

00:59:37   really the saving grace is because [TS]

00:59:39   they're squash and stretchers and [TS]

00:59:40   they're clearly not meant to be [TS]

00:59:43   realistic in any way shape or form still [TS]

00:59:45   gross though i would say actually this [TS]

00:59:48   is a part of the movie that feels the [TS]

00:59:49   most not the most miyazaki like it's [TS]

00:59:51   like the it's just like it's miyazaki [TS]

00:59:54   gonna miyazaki here this is the thing [TS]

00:59:55   because it's like the Goliath is there [TS]

00:59:57   we've got this kind of like act [TS]

00:59:57   we've got this kind of like act [TS]

01:00:00   action sequence happening between the [TS]

01:00:01   Goliath and-and-and-and mom's ship and [TS]

01:00:05   they put they fly up on their little [TS]

01:00:07   kind of like kite thing that they have [TS]

01:00:09   there's the crazy storm there's clouds [TS]

01:00:11   everybody incredibly dangerous looking [TS]

01:00:13   kite thing like a in in the in the realm [TS]

01:00:16   of like ridiculous machines that [TS]

01:00:17   probably wouldn't work and also would be [TS]

01:00:19   incredibly dangerous hey there's a [TS]

01:00:21   there's a totally crazy store looks like [TS]

01:00:23   a hurricane yeah why don't we send two [TS]

01:00:24   kids up in a hang glider tied to the [TS]

01:00:26   shot at by a rope with a winch yeah [TS]

01:00:28   also they have controls but i have no [TS]

01:00:30   indication that they actually do [TS]

01:00:32   anything I think just different [TS]

01:00:34   expertise to each other so they don't [TS]

01:00:35   fall how it's going to get the rest [TS]

01:00:38   classic pirate stuff right there [TS]

01:00:39   yeah but it's very exciting that it's [TS]

01:00:41   also just like it's miyazaki being like [TS]

01:00:43   yeah one airship two airships a third [TS]

01:00:45   flying vehicle clouds and then finally I [TS]

01:00:48   mean it's a nice moment for pots because [TS]

01:00:50   he's like I you know I know this locket [TS]

01:00:52   I is inside those clouds and that's the [TS]

01:00:55   that's the thing that I'm unlocks it but [TS]

01:00:57   it's just it'sit's more air aerial [TS]

01:00:59   action from miyazaki because that is his [TS]

01:01:01   thing he loves it and it also look at [TS]

01:01:03   the beginning of the the scene in The [TS]

01:01:05   Kite when they're they're launching it [TS]

01:01:07   is my one of my favorite cheetah moments [TS]

01:01:09   because you know she's it it's actually [TS]

01:01:11   just after dola says you know that's not [TS]

01:01:14   a thing for girls to do and she throws [TS]

01:01:16   it back in her face and then she's like [TS]

01:01:18   web but wont when you're gone [TS]

01:01:20   once you detach your gonna have to use [TS]

01:01:21   the phone to talk to me and immediately [TS]

01:01:23   the phone rings picks up but it's like [TS]

01:01:26   wow she really is good i think she's [TS]

01:01:27   gotta go shi de that's right and so so [TS]

01:01:29   they it's a great action sequence and [TS]

01:01:31   then we are at laputa of the castle in [TS]

01:01:34   the sky this city that is floating [TS]

01:01:36   inside this I was trying to think like [TS]

01:01:38   if they're inside the big hurricane [TS]

01:01:41   cloud all the time i was wondering what [TS]

01:01:45   life is like a lot better because that [TS]

01:01:47   means that they don't have a lot of [TS]

01:01:48   sunlight I guess because there's a whole [TS]

01:01:50   big cloud around them all the time or [TS]

01:01:51   sunlight comes from the top or maybe I [TS]

01:01:53   know but it was a defense that was a [TS]

01:01:55   defense mechanism because remember the [TS]

01:01:56   clouds went away afterward yeah the [TS]

01:01:58   shields are up so when she arrives [TS]

01:01:59   they'll clear out you can only get [TS]

01:02:01   through if if ghost dad lead you through [TS]

01:02:03   the lightning [TS]

01:02:04   I think that was creeping interesting [TS]

01:02:06   like legs seeing you know that his [TS]

01:02:08   father came this way before whether [TS]

01:02:10   that's literally something [TS]

01:02:12   or whether it's just his memory i like [TS]

01:02:14   that moment of like this is what this is [TS]

01:02:16   what my father did that pot so I think [TS]

01:02:18   he's been struck by lightning at that it [TS]

01:02:19   could be illuminating could be or they [TS]

01:02:22   could be that there's some sort of time [TS]

01:02:24   vortex inversion layer between though [TS]

01:02:26   that's what it is you probably want it's [TS]

01:02:28   clear i mean science really obvious it's [TS]

01:02:31   a great reveal because the kite sort of [TS]

01:02:33   plops down on the little platform and [TS]

01:02:35   the clouds are floating by it at ankle [TS]

01:02:37   level because of course they're up in [TS]

01:02:38   the sky and just that the way this is [TS]

01:02:41   drawn as like this beautiful castle [TS]

01:02:43   floating in the sky but so clearly [TS]

01:02:44   overgrown with everything and just the [TS]

01:02:46   birds flapping around the moss and the [TS]

01:02:48   grass over everything it's a place where [TS]

01:02:49   you would love to hang out I like that [TS]

01:02:51   they have their moment to themselves [TS]

01:02:52   when we don't think about the fact that [TS]

01:02:55   Goliath is still out there and the [TS]

01:02:56   Pirates are have just been shot down you [TS]

01:02:59   know they've got maybe five to ten [TS]

01:03:00   minutes to walk around and discover [TS]

01:03:03   shocked that a miyazaki movie has a [TS]

01:03:05   giant tree at the center of everything [TS]

01:03:07   but they have that time when we just [TS]

01:03:10   ignore the fact that [TS]

01:03:11   oh yeah the clouds probably blew away [TS]

01:03:13   because the Goliath has come in and [TS]

01:03:15   there's probably some you know some [TS]

01:03:18   exploding of the city happening but we [TS]

01:03:20   get that that sort of brief respite [TS]

01:03:23   where they just get to explore I think [TS]

01:03:24   that's we have the flowers the the robot [TS]

01:03:26   finds the bird eggs that has to protect [TS]

01:03:28   from light [TS]

01:03:29   yeah more robots that makes me very [TS]

01:03:32   happy there they're robots that have [TS]

01:03:33   been there awhile and they're covered [TS]

01:03:35   with plants and moss on your fuzzy fuzzy [TS]

01:03:37   robot little fox squirrels upright as [TS]

01:03:41   ago you know i love the fox squirrels [TS]

01:03:43   this is the scene the everytime i watch [TS]

01:03:46   it it makes my heart hurt and everytime [TS]

01:03:50   i watch this movie and I forget and then [TS]

01:03:52   I see the scene and my heart just hurts [TS]

01:03:54   because I know I feel sad for the little [TS]

01:03:57   robot with the giant robot that's been [TS]

01:04:00   alone for so long and like all these [TS]

01:04:02   things that it's taken guardianship or [TS]

01:04:05   was assigned guardianship or whatever [TS]

01:04:06   and then what's gonna happen you know [TS]

01:04:09   you know that their environment even [TS]

01:04:11   though the garden itself survives in the [TS]

01:04:14   end I know the environment is going to [TS]

01:04:16   change vastly and all those little robot [TS]

01:04:19   friends general but friends fall to [TS]

01:04:21   their doom and all of that degrades in [TS]

01:04:23   HS little upper [TS]

01:04:25   garden stays intact we do see that as [TS]

01:04:27   the tree floats off into this guy [TS]

01:04:28   yeah but it's like it's the sweet [TS]

01:04:31   moments but it still is okay lean the [TS]

01:04:33   robot going on and I told me about it [TS]

01:04:36   just keeps on going I don't know if he's [TS]

01:04:38   allowed to go up with the trees it's [TS]

01:04:40   just like it you know in nature vs [TS]

01:04:42   machines in miyazaki movie always been a [TS]

01:04:44   nature and the next 200 years people [TS]

01:04:46   living in that world are going to be [TS]

01:04:48   digging up robots and they're gonna like [TS]

01:04:50   that have landed injury somewhere and [TS]

01:04:52   they're going to come alive and making [TS]

01:04:54   friends everybody's gonna have their own [TS]

01:04:55   robot they've all landed in that [TS]

01:04:57   gigantic crater that has been made but [TS]

01:04:59   the mushroom cloud that was you can [TS]

01:05:02   order on amazon by the way a a planter [TS]

01:05:04   that is the head of of the robot and you [TS]

01:05:08   can plant but you know there's no you [TS]

01:05:10   guys that fell down there too so [TS]

01:05:11   whatever kind of destruction was wrought [TS]

01:05:13   will probably be fertilized pretty well [TS]

01:05:15   on the ocean will be soon come back [TS]

01:05:17   that's right they were the ocean that's [TS]

01:05:19   right i forgot they made a point of [TS]

01:05:20   mentioning that they were over the ocean [TS]

01:05:22   you're falling into the ocean from that [TS]

01:05:24   height you're not going to live [TS]

01:05:25   no I'm just saying like the ocean will [TS]

01:05:27   swallow up all the debris you know like [TS]

01:05:29   the romance you know exactly debris [TS]

01:05:30   that's true when there's the whole bit [TS]

01:05:32   where he fires off the massive cannon or [TS]

01:05:36   whatever it is and in there's a mushroom [TS]

01:05:38   cloud which one it's not it's not anime [TS]

01:05:40   movie about a mushroom cloud come you [TS]

01:05:41   gotta have it and and it's in keeping [TS]

01:05:44   with everything else in this movie [TS]

01:05:45   because it's the boy's adventure tale [TS]

01:05:47   where bad things don't really happen or [TS]

01:05:49   at least they do they happen off-screen [TS]

01:05:51   where we don't have to see them you have [TS]

01:05:53   to know that that explosion was just [TS]

01:05:56   over the ocean so nobody died [TS]

01:05:58   it's okay except for all the army man [TS]

01:06:00   who got dumped out of the bottom of the [TS]

01:06:01   glass for girly yeah they're ice cream [TS]

01:06:04   and they probably they probably just [TS]

01:06:06   splashed into this into the water [TS]

01:06:08   they're okay but they bobbed up and row [TS]

01:06:10   54 53 miles is yep but this is a I do [TS]

01:06:17   like the deposit we get it's very nice [TS]

01:06:19   and then of course the Army is there and [TS]

01:06:21   ruined everything and they arrest the [TS]

01:06:23   Pirates and their looting the city they [TS]

01:06:25   find jewels and treasure and and they're [TS]

01:06:29   distracted by because they don't know [TS]

01:06:30   the true power and Mischka goes off and [TS]

01:06:32   you know he's our true villain here and [TS]

01:06:34   he's got his own plan that he's going to [TS]

01:06:36   that he's going to put into [TS]

01:06:38   well into plant place that the whole [TS]

01:06:40   thing is beautiful to look at everyone [TS]

01:06:42   every little bit of it is just beautiful [TS]

01:06:44   to look at this little beaver creature [TS]

01:06:46   swimming in the water when they zoom [TS]

01:06:47   down into the water that is filled the [TS]

01:06:49   chasms you see these prehistoric fish [TS]

01:06:50   echoes of a early foreshadowing of ponyo [TS]

01:06:54   there where this is ancient place where [TS]

01:06:56   these prehistoric fish swim and like [TS]

01:06:57   two-thirds of this movie as it turns out [TS]

01:06:59   is it involves whatever the kids are [TS]

01:07:02   hanging from falling off [TS]

01:07:04   yeah yeah this is the animators got a [TS]

01:07:06   lot of exercise at making things fall [TS]

01:07:09   apart into pieces rather be a railroad [TS]

01:07:11   trestles are you know masonry thing [TS]

01:07:14   Rick's in his house yeah when he when [TS]

01:07:16   when pots who jumps over at one point to [TS]

01:07:19   the other side I'll go first and then it [TS]

01:07:20   just progressively starts falling and he [TS]

01:07:22   keeps climbing up in that part falls and [TS]

01:07:24   it just keeps climbing up [TS]

01:07:25   that's really great there i love the art [TS]

01:07:28   direction when they go when they get [TS]

01:07:29   inside there's that really weird inner [TS]

01:07:31   chamber that's all those floating blocks [TS]

01:07:33   there's like a control chamber that [TS]

01:07:35   looks fairly intact but then there's [TS]

01:07:36   this other control chamber that's just [TS]

01:07:38   like clotted with tree roots and there [TS]

01:07:41   are bugs and and a big crystal and like [TS]

01:07:45   a tablet stone tablet instruction manual [TS]

01:07:48   on how to run the castle in the sky i [TS]

01:07:50   guess but i also many different [TS]

01:07:52   environments that are all beautiful and [TS]

01:07:54   interesting as we go through it's the [TS]

01:07:56   it's the blackstone has spoken of in [TS]

01:07:58   legend sure you heard of it of course so [TS]

01:08:00   she does captured pot sue is you know he [TS]

01:08:03   frees the mom and mom and the Pirates [TS]

01:08:04   and all that they didn't you don't want [TS]

01:08:07   to just skip over the fart joke Jason [TS]

01:08:08   yeah that was a fart joke there's always [TS]

01:08:10   think it's a pretty good one too i gotta [TS]

01:08:12   say Pazuzu climbs into the window and [TS]

01:08:14   one of those a you know exploding [TS]

01:08:17   potatoes gets thrown in after him [TS]

01:08:18   there's an explosion we see dola rise up [TS]

01:08:21   off of the ground and smoke kind of [TS]

01:08:23   emanates from around her fundament and [TS]

01:08:26   and everybody kind of looks at her and [TS]

01:08:29   says it wasn't me [TS]

01:08:31   it's good it's good it's a solid one [TS]

01:08:33   who's also the point where I think for [TS]

01:08:35   me I kind of mushka went from a [TS]

01:08:38   character that I probably shouldn't [TS]

01:08:40   admit this but I sort of had a crush on [TS]

01:08:42   to being like really really obnoxious [TS]

01:08:45   over-the-top mustache twirling villain [TS]

01:08:48   so yeah whatever [TS]

01:08:49   but he doesn't care about any of the [TS]

01:08:51   people who came there with them it [TS]

01:08:52   doesn't care about the army people he [TS]

01:08:53   just wanted the Machine and he's going [TS]

01:08:55   to kill everybody else and it's gonna [TS]

01:08:57   get a little creepy stuff like oh she's [TS]

01:09:00   you're going to be here with me because [TS]

01:09:01   we're both busy he reveals that he is [TS]

01:09:03   part he also has a secret a la la pita [TS]

01:09:06   name and is also royalty and he's [TS]

01:09:08   declared himself he literally just [TS]

01:09:10   declared himself king and starts killing [TS]

01:09:12   everybody else is easy [TS]

01:09:14   he's a doing everything with his name [TS]

01:09:16   translation is we hear that she's the [TS]

01:09:18   true ruler what isn't a 2l fake the fake [TS]

01:09:22   ruler that's what his name translates [TS]

01:09:23   doing the he won the electoral college [TS]

01:09:25   there is I well if they're if there's a [TS]

01:09:30   man alive like then the rule transfers [TS]

01:09:33   to the man even though she's technically [TS]

01:09:34   closer to the throne who knows that [TS]

01:09:36   whatever rules it translator army [TS]

01:09:38   deployed really in charge seems to me [TS]

01:09:39   like whoever's got the got the the [TS]

01:09:41   control of the throne room can can make [TS]

01:09:44   it happen because nobody's really paying [TS]

01:09:45   attention but this we do end up with our [TS]

01:09:47   confrontation where much because there [TS]

01:09:49   and and r2 r2 kid friends are there and [TS]

01:09:52   i love this part and the and there's [TS]

01:09:54   that moment where it's basically like [TS]

01:09:56   you know just give me he's got the gun [TS]

01:09:58   that he's used to to to the blast open [TS]

01:10:01   the hole and go in there and he's got [TS]

01:10:03   the the crystal and Mischka once the [TS]

01:10:05   crystal and there's like give me a [TS]

01:10:06   minute to talk to her and then mr. [TS]

01:10:09   whisper whisper whisper villain error [TS]

01:10:11   yeah but he's got he's got a gun and a [TS]

01:10:14   crystal right so there's this it's sort [TS]

01:10:16   of like you stand off he's kinda gotta [TS]

01:10:18   give him and he's like alright then [TS]

01:10:19   we'll do it and of course that's the the [TS]

01:10:21   secret plan is that she's going to use [TS]

01:10:23   the the spell of destruction the [TS]

01:10:25   implementation which is very short spell [TS]

01:10:29   very well someone was like one worried [TS]

01:10:31   about right and also like it's one of [TS]

01:10:33   those things where like what exactly is [TS]

01:10:34   the purpose of the spell that destroys [TS]

01:10:36   the entire city like I know what the [TS]

01:10:37   self-destruction but like its supposed [TS]

01:10:39   more comments entire city like is this [TS]

01:10:41   dispelled that fires the big weapon to [TS]

01:10:43   make so much about no this is about to [TS]

01:10:45   destroy the entire thing you're [TS]

01:10:46   currently floating on John you have to [TS]

01:10:48   have a spell of destruction if you're [TS]

01:10:49   gonna have a spell of creation is just [TS]

01:10:51   how it works [TS]

01:10:51   I think it's that Aloha hello i think my [TS]

01:10:55   headcanon here is that what they've [TS]

01:10:57   passed down across the generations is [TS]

01:10:59   basically like protection stuff so that [TS]

01:11:02   if something goes wrong and [TS]

01:11:03   people do go back to laputa and are [TS]

01:11:05   using it for evil then this blind of the [TS]

01:11:08   family can put a stop to it that because [TS]

01:11:10   they decide to remember they decided not [TS]

01:11:11   to live there anymore and go back down [TS]

01:11:13   to earlier so that's what i think is [TS]

01:11:15   like the spell of destruction is like a [TS]

01:11:16   last resort because as we see here a bad [TS]

01:11:19   guy is basically going to take over the [TS]

01:11:21   the the castle in the sky and that could [TS]

01:11:23   well have been something they programmed [TS]

01:11:24   into the crystal just before they left [TS]

01:11:27   yes i do it might be needed to get [TS]

01:11:28   otherwise you might say it accidentally [TS]

01:11:29   that makes perfect sense too because if [TS]

01:11:31   if you're the people who have you been [TS]

01:11:33   living in the city your entire life and [TS]

01:11:35   you're finally you know deciding your [TS]

01:11:36   it's gonna be hard decision to leave and [TS]

01:11:38   go back to earth [TS]

01:11:39   the idea of actually destroying your [TS]

01:11:42   home as you leave is probably too much [TS]

01:11:44   for them but they knew that they needed [TS]

01:11:46   to build a snow failsafe just give [TS]

01:11:48   somebody else discovered it later [TS]

01:11:50   it's like a wall actually checks out [TS]

01:11:51   because why wouldn't you just blow it up [TS]

01:11:53   as soon as you took off but yeah it [TS]

01:11:54   makes good sense because it's been a [TS]

01:11:56   long time making this the gardens are [TS]

01:11:57   beautifully really and also want to give [TS]

01:11:59   the robot sometimes yeah and also by the [TS]

01:12:04   way this is the place where earlier [TS]

01:12:06   forecast misguidance gorges a huge flood [TS]

01:12:08   of these robots is out there was just [TS]

01:12:10   wanted to take care of the garden and [TS]

01:12:11   don't know it's like Sunderland you know [TS]

01:12:13   and they go out with their wings and [TS]

01:12:15   they're blowing up the Calliope and [TS]

01:12:16   killing all the army guys I'm more [TS]

01:12:18   robots because many Republicans Trump [TS]

01:12:20   around you don't actually see them [TS]

01:12:22   plug-in it's in the same vein where you [TS]

01:12:24   don't actually see any of the murder and [TS]

01:12:26   awfulness and people just kind of far [TS]

01:12:28   out of the the Catholic we come out with [TS]

01:12:30   their wings like it it's like a swarm of [TS]

01:12:32   them they're all fly and don't become [TS]

01:12:34   too they're attacking the Goliath true [TS]

01:12:36   which person to flames but if they're [TS]

01:12:38   probably non-lethal and arrow cancer [TS]

01:12:42   they slowly float to the ground and [TS]

01:12:44   probably purchase between two buildings [TS]

01:12:45   where somebody has to come out right [TS]

01:12:47   so the destruction of pappadeaux is a [TS]

01:12:50   great exercise and these animators [TS]

01:12:52   drawing blocks yep falling apart in [TS]

01:12:54   beautiful patterns and you know tumbling [TS]

01:12:56   over each other it's like like animator [TS]

01:12:59   school with like basic shapes and just [TS]

01:13:01   you know take them to the nth degree [TS]

01:13:03   yeah there's a real tetris field is / 3d [TS]

01:13:04   Tetris it is the big version of that [TS]

01:13:06   that thing where the party was climbing [TS]

01:13:09   up and things keep falling off now it's [TS]

01:13:10   like the whole but it's not the whole [TS]

01:13:12   city that one of the things I really [TS]

01:13:13   like about this destruction and I [TS]

01:13:15   every time i watch this movie i'm [TS]

01:13:16   reminded of it is is the the tree and [TS]

01:13:20   you know remains it's like the core of [TS]

01:13:21   the city is this tree and it still gets [TS]

01:13:24   to float around it's just all the stuff [TS]

01:13:26   the course of history remains this is a [TS]

01:13:28   miyazaki exactly i mean and as the idea [TS]

01:13:31   is like when they left that tree was [TS]

01:13:33   just like the central tree right but you [TS]

01:13:35   leave for a few hundred years and that [TS]

01:13:36   tree is now the whole thing we have [TS]

01:13:38   roots go everywhere they're constantly [TS]

01:13:39   fighting with the roots in the various [TS]

01:13:41   scenes party was saved by root when he's [TS]

01:13:43   like on the route that's wrapping around [TS]

01:13:44   the bottom he comes back into the bottom [TS]

01:13:46   kind of like Luke trying to climb up [TS]

01:13:47   through the the thing at the bottom of [TS]

01:13:49   the best friend only 52 makes it because [TS]

01:13:50   he uses bare feet that's in the cute [TS]

01:13:52   thing where he takes up the sox to get a [TS]

01:13:54   better grip and he's he's running around [TS]

01:13:55   with his bare feet but a little monkey [TS]

01:13:57   feet like gripping onto things like [TS]

01:13:59   bunnies jumping up trying to i get back [TS]

01:14:01   to shoot at worming his way through [TS]

01:14:02   these little holes that he blasted the [TS]

01:14:04   wood with his they do a good thing [TS]

01:14:06   without giving him like three bullets in [TS]

01:14:07   your counting them as he uses them so [TS]

01:14:09   you know he's got the one bullet to make [TS]

01:14:10   the hole in the one bolt for this and [TS]

01:14:11   then you know he's out of ammo later [TS]

01:14:13   it's a nice a nice sequence although i [TS]

01:14:15   feel like in the inner chamber she [TS]

01:14:17   doesn't have anything to do [TS]

01:14:19   she's fans there listens to the mustache [TS]

01:14:21   twirling guy do his thing [TS]

01:14:23   well she just tried to stop him from [TS]

01:14:24   killing all the army guys you do see [TS]

01:14:26   some of that but then she gets smacked [TS]

01:14:28   for it and she does get shot in the back [TS]

01:14:30   kind of like he's running after he [TS]

01:14:32   shoots but she actually just trips you [TS]

01:14:33   might think he just shot her dead now [TS]

01:14:35   she's fine she gets back up i remember [TS]

01:14:37   seeing that and thinking wow that's a [TS]

01:14:38   bold move to have her she scratches on [TS]

01:14:40   the back at the end of the credits but [TS]

01:14:43   eventually of course that tree lands and [TS]

01:14:45   takes root in Japan and totoro moves in [TS]

01:14:48   and there's a cat bus and also some corn [TS]

01:14:51   is left at some hospital all fits [TS]

01:14:54   together and I i feel like the climax of [TS]

01:14:56   this movie is one of the what one of the [TS]

01:14:59   many things that I feel like slots it [TS]

01:15:01   and for me below Nozick acknowledging it [TS]

01:15:03   does almost all the same things but in a [TS]

01:15:05   way that I find more pleasing is in [TS]

01:15:06   general more sophisticated and more you [TS]

01:15:08   know self-serious unless squash and [TS]

01:15:10   stretch because that the climax of the [TS]

01:15:13   movie is them saying the spell together [TS]

01:15:16   that destroys it and defeats are much [TS]

01:15:19   just chillin villain but by that point [TS]

01:15:20   like everything else had been stripped [TS]

01:15:22   away we only care about this one evil [TS]

01:15:24   guy getting the city once you eliminate [TS]

01:15:26   him it's like out [TS]

01:15:27   well I guess we're done then be [TS]

01:15:28   the army guys for taking care of earlier [TS]

01:15:30   and you two are safe and you've defeated [TS]

01:15:33   the one guy and now you just have the [TS]

01:15:35   big floating city and it you know it's [TS]

01:15:38   like they don't know how to end it like [TS]

01:15:39   and floating three credits [TS]

01:15:41   yeah well you end it with a scooby-doo [TS]

01:15:43   sound effect Isis i did my notes are [TS]

01:15:47   much less from the very end of the film [TS]

01:15:49   because it's just sort of there's the [TS]

01:15:51   action and it happens and then in the [TS]

01:15:53   end they pull the self-destruct lever [TS]

01:15:55   basically and it all and everybody's [TS]

01:15:57   okay and you know they they leave they [TS]

01:16:00   kind of a kind away at the end and roots [TS]

01:16:03   save them because trees are our friends [TS]

01:16:04   at the Pirates at some point that we [TS]

01:16:06   never saw we're able to make off with [TS]

01:16:08   some treasure although i have no idea [TS]

01:16:11   when that was never part of the closer i [TS]

01:16:13   stealing putting in their pockets [TS]

01:16:14   immediately connect all the little bug [TS]

01:16:16   ships together in a little wacky [TS]

01:16:17   centipedes group gets nude and the any [TS]

01:16:19   land there little of their little tight [TS]

01:16:21   they'd land there and they're like it's [TS]

01:16:23   totally overloaded and then part Sioux [TS]

01:16:24   and she to come in they're like all [TS]

01:16:26   right I guess we'll get you can come on [TS]

01:16:28   board to but they've got their jewels [TS]

01:16:29   that they're gonna what I like about [TS]

01:16:31   that is like we've come to like the [TS]

01:16:33   pirate family and here it's like they're [TS]

01:16:34   gonna be fine even if even a pop kind of [TS]

01:16:36   want and shit [TS]

01:16:37   yeah yeah because I got all those jewels [TS]

01:16:39   and stuff they're gonna be fine never [TS]

01:16:40   had it all had no mind to the fact that [TS]

01:16:42   the mining community from which positive [TS]

01:16:44   hails is spreading out of mining things [TS]

01:16:46   and is probably going to starve to death [TS]

01:16:47   at every movie yeah we should ignore [TS]

01:16:49   that all of that glowing stuff was [TS]

01:16:52   causing terrible environmental carnage [TS]

01:16:55   so they really need to stop lining its [TS]

01:16:57   before the best hearing noises all [TS]

01:16:59   mining town should move back to like you [TS]

01:17:02   know the hills are alive with the sound [TS]

01:17:03   of music where she is from because that [TS]

01:17:04   place is beautiful [TS]

01:17:05   she's there with the yaks on the grass [TS]

01:17:07   covered Hill as the scenic mountains [TS]

01:17:08   around what do you feel about raising [TS]

01:17:10   yaks whatever she's doing she was able [TS]

01:17:13   to support herself and it was way nicer [TS]

01:17:15   than this crater infested gash in the [TS]

01:17:18   earth filled with trains know maybe [TS]

01:17:20   maybe that's where they'll end up with [TS]

01:17:21   that that's where they'll end up well so [TS]

01:17:23   this is the the end yes trees are our [TS]

01:17:24   friends if they save the day of tree is [TS]

01:17:26   floating in the sky perhaps there is a [TS]

01:17:28   total virgin air from the usual miyazaki [TS]

01:17:31   I know exactly [TS]

01:17:32   alright so there's some great things i [TS]

01:17:34   gotta mention that i did not feel like [TS]

01:17:36   interrupting the flow of the podcast [TS]

01:17:37   with little details that I loved [TS]

01:17:40   there's the bit where shita is [TS]

01:17:42   descending from the heavens and her body [TS]

01:17:45   suddenly regains gravity [TS]

01:17:47   yeah that is raising its heavy this rule [TS]

01:17:50   animation I've seen you can find you [TS]

01:17:52   look very very careful next time in his [TS]

01:17:54   knees it already but it's like you know [TS]

01:17:57   it's about to happen you know you see [TS]

01:17:58   the crystal suddenly dimming and then [TS]

01:18:00   suddenly all overweight lands on him as [TS]

01:18:03   ridiculous as his his response to it is [TS]

01:18:05   you can feel that when she when she [TS]

01:18:07   suddenly gains weight crazy i got the [TS]

01:18:09   other thing where he's working the break [TS]

01:18:11   it like this all you got to you to work [TS]

01:18:12   the the thing for the elevator right and [TS]

01:18:15   he's you know this like maybe the first [TS]

01:18:17   or second time he gets to write a letter [TS]

01:18:19   to do is they're concentrating and he's [TS]

01:18:21   doing and his little tongue sticking out [TS]

01:18:22   of the corner of his mouth when he gets [TS]

01:18:23   distracted by just seeing her feet about [TS]

01:18:26   you know but she's still up there on the [TS]

01:18:27   platform yeah it looks up at her feet [TS]

01:18:28   for a second as one with the break [TS]

01:18:30   lots of the lots of subtle moments in [TS]

01:18:32   there that you know that you see it much [TS]

01:18:34   more in later movies where they don't [TS]

01:18:37   oversell it [TS]

01:18:38   that whole thing is great because it's [TS]

01:18:40   like oh yeah girl fell from the sky [TS]

01:18:42   right but I got a difficult job and you [TS]

01:18:44   trying to tell me boss the boss the [TS]

01:18:46   girls like yeah yes dear whatever blah [TS]

01:18:49   we're all going to starve I got things [TS]

01:18:50   to worry about it [TS]

01:18:52   there's also another great little detail [TS]

01:18:54   i liked the bit where she hands the [TS]

01:18:57   crystal through the wall to him and he [TS]

01:18:59   put in my mouth so that it can blow a [TS]

01:19:01   hole through the wall so we can get [TS]

01:19:02   through and there's a couple of little [TS]

01:19:04   bits where he opens his mouth slightly [TS]

01:19:05   lineup is shot and you can his mouth [TS]

01:19:07   closed a little close the crystal insect [TS]

01:19:09   terrific and the last thing I promised [TS]

01:19:12   last thing I love the sequence where [TS]

01:19:15   dola passes out on her sky mosquito [TS]

01:19:17   because she got hit by a pitch and [TS]

01:19:18   angling this is attached by the thing to [TS]

01:19:20   her belt so good and he's got to reach [TS]

01:19:23   around her and of course she wakes up at [TS]

01:19:24   the exact right moment and puts one hand [TS]

01:19:26   on his head and it's just for the [TS]

01:19:28   control with the other hand she's got a [TS]

01:19:29   broken goggle like the glass tanks off [TS]

01:19:31   of it and just look right and he said no [TS]

01:19:34   is that only animemovies male Miyazaki's [TS]

01:19:37   flying things make that neither not [TS]

01:19:39   because we made that noise many times so [TS]

01:19:40   I'm interested what everybody over also [TS]

01:19:42   we heard from John there how he ranks [TS]

01:19:43   this you know in terms of miyazaki at [TS]

01:19:46   least we know John that did that it's [TS]

01:19:48   it's a it's below nastya for you [TS]

01:19:50   yeah it is is a like it does so many [TS]

01:19:54   things the nausea does like i'm gonna [TS]

01:19:56   say it's the same movie because clearly [TS]

01:19:57   the settings different but it is is that [TS]

01:19:59   in the genres of music movies there is [TS]

01:20:01   the the wacky kids movies which is a [TS]

01:20:04   whole section over there you've got the [TS]

01:20:06   latter day I a little bit more artsy my [TS]

01:20:10   kids really like how and spirited away [TS]

01:20:12   and stuff and then in in the eighties [TS]

01:20:14   you have these movies that are like [TS]

01:20:16   adventure movies with varying degrees of [TS]

01:20:18   seriousness and among them [TS]

01:20:20   la posada has many things going for it i [TS]

01:20:23   love the musical of the opening [TS]

01:20:24   sequences great things in the middle but [TS]

01:20:26   overall it feels less sophisticated to [TS]

01:20:29   me then has got a lot of musical feels [TS]

01:20:32   more fully realized and if you like this [TS]

01:20:34   story has a more satisfying climax and [TS]

01:20:37   conclusion and most damningly this movie [TS]

01:20:40   does not have a post-credit sequence [TS]

01:20:41   agility how everybody ended up in a [TS]

01:20:42   bunch of cute montages anything that the [TS]

01:20:45   only thing that matters is how the tree [TS]

01:20:47   ended up you should not sure I don't [TS]

01:20:49   care about that really floating entry [TS]

01:20:51   through all phases of the day and [TS]

01:20:52   talking about the the cartoonishly [TS]

01:20:55   curved it so this one feels more like a [TS]

01:20:57   trifle to me and if this was the only [TS]

01:20:59   one that existed i would love it but [TS]

01:21:01   when the not because they're as well I [TS]

01:21:03   feel like this is just you know poor [TS]

01:21:05   man's mask wow yeah I kind of thought [TS]

01:21:07   that the tree was gonna die at the end [TS]

01:21:08   because it got so far away from the [TS]

01:21:09   earth there's no oxygen left plenty of [TS]

01:21:12   Sun plenty of you don't need oxygen when [TS]

01:21:13   you got a theory of yeah exactly right [TS]

01:21:15   propellers for that matter but we put [TS]

01:21:16   them on anyway carbon dioxide again [TS]

01:21:18   alright Steve what about you how do you [TS]

01:21:19   how do you feel overall the castle in [TS]

01:21:21   the sky [TS]

01:21:21   where's this rank you know I I like this [TS]

01:21:24   a lot i thought it was I just like the [TS]

01:21:26   the tone of it was a romp and nautica is [TS]

01:21:29   not I actually like this better than [TS]

01:21:31   Oscar because of that and I also like [TS]

01:21:34   the lack of complexity i think it's it's [TS]

01:21:38   nice to have a film that's just really [TS]

01:21:41   legitimately an adventure tale and it [TS]

01:21:44   doesn't really attempt to be anything [TS]

01:21:47   more than that it's strangely enough it [TS]

01:21:50   took me a little while to get into it [TS]

01:21:52   but once I did I really enjoyed it but [TS]

01:21:54   yeah I really dug it [TS]

01:21:56   I'm not sure how it sits with say keys [TS]

01:21:58   and totoro [TS]

01:22:00   because those are kind of off by [TS]

01:22:01   themselves they're not really the same [TS]

01:22:03   kind of movie yeah they're not really [TS]

01:22:04   even in the same universe and so it's [TS]

01:22:07   hard for me to slap them in against that [TS]

01:22:09   but but but against Moscow which is in a [TS]

01:22:12   lot of ways a very similar movie I i [TS]

01:22:14   enjoyed this more just because of the [TS]

01:22:16   tone Erica what do you think i've seen a [TS]

01:22:19   lot less miyazaki and previously know [TS]

01:22:22   she was my favorite by like a million [TS]

01:22:24   million miles but I actually think I [TS]

01:22:26   like this better not buy not a ton [TS]

01:22:28   it's kind of like just by a hair but [TS]

01:22:30   actually for a lot of the same reasons [TS]

01:22:31   that Steve said I just appreciated the [TS]

01:22:34   fact that this was a fairly [TS]

01:22:36   straightforward adventure story with you [TS]

01:22:40   know two characters and that was another [TS]

01:22:41   thing that I really appreciate it was [TS]

01:22:43   that we had two characters working [TS]

01:22:44   together and going on an adventure [TS]

01:22:46   together whereas in now chica it's [TS]

01:22:48   mostly mostly just her she's really the [TS]

01:22:51   center of the movie and while I i love [TS]

01:22:53   that now she has kind of more to say [TS]

01:22:55   about you know humanity and in that sort [TS]

01:22:59   of thing there's there's it's in castle [TS]

01:23:01   in the sky but it's more like a hint of [TS]

01:23:02   it that's kind of in the background and [TS]

01:23:04   be the the adventure itself is for [TS]

01:23:06   fronted and it just it really felt like [TS]

01:23:09   a lot of the anime that I have enjoyed a [TS]

01:23:12   lot throughout the years so i mean if if [TS]

01:23:14   castle in the sky is your thing i do [TS]

01:23:16   recommend checking out Nadia the secret [TS]

01:23:18   of blue water it's 39 episodes so it's a [TS]

01:23:20   heck of a lot longer but it feels very [TS]

01:23:23   very much the same and apparently that's [TS]

01:23:26   because the idea was up from back in [TS]

01:23:30   like the seventies or something like [TS]

01:23:31   that that means hockey was first started [TS]

01:23:32   working out and he ended up being [TS]

01:23:33   cannibalizing it for some of the ideas [TS]

01:23:35   for castle in the sky and then they [TS]

01:23:37   ended up doing Nadia anyway after the [TS]

01:23:39   fact so yeah this does feel more like [TS]

01:23:41   it's like I can't imagine this as a TV [TS]

01:23:43   show cuz it feels like that now that [TS]

01:23:44   it's episodic but when you see [TS]

01:23:46   characters like adventure stories lend [TS]

01:23:48   themselves well to a bunch of you know [TS]

01:23:50   25 minute episodes like it is like [TS]

01:23:53   future boy conan is the you know the [TS]

01:23:54   prototypical super early example a lot [TS]

01:23:57   of the lot of the characters the ages of [TS]

01:23:59   the characters how old is the boy hero [TS]

01:24:01   in this story lots of anime series have [TS]

01:24:03   boy heroes like that I need everyone to [TS]

01:24:06   be dead of course so I'd like nothing [TS]

01:24:08   better but [TS]

01:24:09   i will say that now she had the fox [TS]

01:24:11   squirrel being much more important is [TS]

01:24:12   this [TS]

01:24:15   this did not have nearly enough Fox [TS]

01:24:16   group had so many of them was like nine [TS]

01:24:18   you gotta love that little bit of [TS]

01:24:19   fanservice though I think whatever their [TS]

01:24:21   PA scampered on the shoulders of a robot [TS]

01:24:23   covered with moss that's kind of that's [TS]

01:24:25   good that's true yes quantity quantity [TS]

01:24:26   over quality but yeah actually I will [TS]

01:24:28   point out that Nadia has a little grey [TS]

01:24:31   lion cub named Kingu so you know that's [TS]

01:24:34   another thing you know you to lean what [TS]

01:24:38   what do you think i'm going with Stephen [TS]

01:24:40   Eric on this and nossek i like because [TS]

01:24:43   she's definitely the heroine she's got a [TS]

01:24:45   lot of agency but it's it's definitely [TS]

01:24:48   more serious and this is a little bit [TS]

01:24:50   more lighthearted a little bit more fun [TS]

01:24:52   little bit more teamwork II and I like [TS]

01:24:57   that there's a lot of pink pink hair [TS]

01:25:00   pink pants on everybody feel like dora [TS]

01:25:04   has insisted because that's her favorite [TS]

01:25:06   yeah yeah yeah I love that and I love [TS]

01:25:08   that because you wouldn't [TS]

01:25:10   and according to you know kind of our [TS]

01:25:13   expectations of what color she would [TS]

01:25:15   like pink is definitely not it you know [TS]

01:25:17   gender stereotyping she's surrounded by [TS]

01:25:19   men and she makes them all wear pink [TS]

01:25:20   pants and yeah they slit pigtails this [TS]

01:25:24   is the end of your past me as I can be [TS]

01:25:25   44 is up with the cold pigtails she gets [TS]

01:25:28   her picture shot off first of all poor [TS]

01:25:30   little thing nothing is worse than [TS]

01:25:31   having your pigtails shut up dont [TS]

01:25:33   pigtails could choke a horse [TS]

01:25:35   they're like this incredibly powerful [TS]

01:25:37   make that nothing is worse than having [TS]

01:25:39   your pigtail shot and anyone with the [TS]

01:25:40   cartoon physics when they are surprised [TS]

01:25:42   your pigtails go up like there in 10 a [TS]

01:25:44   or something yes everybody helpfully [TS]

01:25:46   works in context you totally by it's [TS]

01:25:48   like wait a second is her pigtails [TS]

01:25:49   floating yes they are [TS]

01:25:50   yeah it's there yeah yes so I love that [TS]

01:25:53   and it's also one of the first miyazaki [TS]

01:25:55   movies i saw so it's got kind of a [TS]

01:25:58   special sentimental place in my heart to [TS]

01:26:00   for the for just that reason [TS]

01:26:02   so I'm mtm castle in the sky if I have [TS]

01:26:05   to pit against anything and it's [TS]

01:26:07   definitely in my top [TS]

01:26:09   I don't know three or four miyazaki [TS]

01:26:11   movies and we're all worried about you [TS]

01:26:14   yeah this is a weird one very strong [TS]

01:26:17   feelings about this movie because my kid [TS]

01:26:18   really loved it when she was little and [TS]

01:26:20   I think [TS]

01:26:22   this was the second miyazaki movie I saw [TS]

01:26:24   everything totoro a couple times and I I [TS]

01:26:28   feel like in the taxonomy I want to [TS]

01:26:31   slaughter alongside like porco rosso [TS]

01:26:33   where it's like whoa what is this who is [TS]

01:26:36   this for [TS]

01:26:37   but like it's it's very well done it's [TS]

01:26:39   it's you know it's charming and weird [TS]

01:26:41   but uh yeah yeah we would not be in my [TS]

01:26:44   top five but I i do think there's a lot [TS]

01:26:47   to love about it [TS]

01:26:49   the music is astonishing I like the way [TS]

01:26:52   that sounds so mundane I like the way [TS]

01:26:54   the characters are drawn i like the sort [TS]

01:26:57   of straightforwardness the almost notnot [TS]

01:26:58   dizziness of them but i like the [TS]

01:27:00   straightforwardness of the way a lot of [TS]

01:27:01   the characters that the two main [TS]

01:27:03   characters are drawn [TS]

01:27:04   ya know I i think it's terrific i did [TS]

01:27:07   not have been quiet this episode partly [TS]

01:27:10   because i did not feel I didn't love it [TS]

01:27:13   as much as I just left my side there are [TS]

01:27:16   others now they get big no-no this is [TS]

01:27:18   nothing against the movie mean it's like [TS]

01:27:19   John says I mean how do you grade on [TS]

01:27:21   this particular curve it's crazy I mean [TS]

01:27:22   like we just saw the I've seen the [TS]

01:27:24   trailer for baby boss three times and I [TS]

01:27:26   want to take my life like you look at [TS]

01:27:28   this and it's like oh my god this is an [TS]

01:27:29   extraordinary achievement but it is [TS]

01:27:31   funny over time as i get older the ones [TS]

01:27:33   that kind of rise and you know not cause [TS]

01:27:35   one of those ones were like you know [TS]

01:27:36   that it's it's so weird and it's so [TS]

01:27:39   ambitious and it was you know done so [TS]

01:27:43   relatively early now I have a great [TS]

01:27:46   feelings like and like i said to you [TS]

01:27:47   earlier on slack Jess and I such fond [TS]

01:27:49   memories of you know my kid loving this [TS]

01:27:51   movie when I was a kid so I still like [TS]

01:27:53   it a lot i would still highly recommend [TS]

01:27:55   it but like as I'm drawn to the weird [TS]

01:27:58   miyazaki I i find myself like just mymy [TS]

01:28:02   brain is still untangling a lot of [TS]

01:28:04   things about what spirited away right [TS]

01:28:08   house i know a lot of people howl's [TS]

01:28:09   moving castle is not a lot of people's [TS]

01:28:10   favorite movie but like that movie is [TS]

01:28:12   strange the weird it is so weird [TS]

01:28:14   there's so much I don't understand in [TS]

01:28:16   that movie like what you know and John [TS]

01:28:17   John explained to me something wise hair [TS]

01:28:19   keeps changing like a bit like i I just [TS]

01:28:21   I when it comes to weird miyazaki I like [TS]

01:28:24   a pedal to the metal [TS]

01:28:25   I think I think porco rosso little [TS]

01:28:27   weirder than this one but early charming [TS]

01:28:28   movie but yeah I i don't want to sound [TS]

01:28:32   on plus i really do like it and enjoyed [TS]

01:28:34   watching it but [TS]

01:28:35   didn't grab me as much as it did a few [TS]

01:28:37   years ago but i still really enjoyed [TS]

01:28:40   funny I mean listen to you describe [TS]

01:28:42   tosca and-and-and describe this movie I [TS]

01:28:45   think I I kind of agree but with a [TS]

01:28:48   different result which is nasik you know [TS]

01:28:51   it is i I'd say more challenging it is [TS]

01:28:53   weird and there are there it's I can [TS]

01:28:58   appreciate it in many ways on an [TS]

01:29:00   intellectual level at a way that maybe I [TS]

01:29:02   don't castle in the sky [TS]

01:29:03   however darker and more Graham yeah yeah [TS]

01:29:05   yeah but it kick will it's not even [TS]

01:29:09   close to the amount of funness that i [TS]

01:29:11   have for castle in the sky [TS]

01:29:13   I love this movie I want to give it a [TS]

01:29:15   big hug [TS]

01:29:16   it is not at the level of keeping a [TS]

01:29:17   totoro because I consider those two of [TS]

01:29:19   my best things ever made in the sunset [TS]

01:29:23   the film but I put it above any other [TS]

01:29:25   miyazaki I've seen I i love the [TS]

01:29:28   adventure story i love the look of it [TS]

01:29:31   you get the weird train stuff you get [TS]

01:29:33   the weird airship stuff I i think it [TS]

01:29:35   looks great [TS]

01:29:36   it moves really well it is is it light [TS]

01:29:40   is it a little bit of a trifle yeah I [TS]

01:29:43   guess that's fair but it's so it's a [TS]

01:29:45   really good adventure series so it is [TS]

01:29:47   unimpeachable mean raiders of the lost [TS]

01:29:49   ark is a really good adventure story too [TS]

01:29:51   and that's one of my favorite one of my [TS]

01:29:52   favorite movies I I can forgive I can [TS]

01:29:54   forgive a lot for for having it be a a [TS]

01:29:58   you know there's more to raiders that [TS]

01:29:59   this is not raiders of the lost ark but [TS]

01:30:01   it gave me some of those feelings and [TS]

01:30:03   some of those scenes I so I like a lot [TS]

01:30:05   although not at the level of of kiki or [TS]

01:30:08   or totoro really going to see those [TS]

01:30:10   everything castle kali-aastra there's no [TS]

01:30:12   I have not [TS]

01:30:13   well we'll see where it's lots but mmm [TS]

01:30:15   yeah but it is this this is very much [TS]

01:30:18   like that in terms of tone but that it [TS]

01:30:20   but it that one is so much more i'm not [TS]

01:30:22   gonna say primitive but it's like like [TS]

01:30:25   prehistoric any way that we can maybe [TS]

01:30:27   we'll get to it eventually [TS]

01:30:28   well this is this is a swashbuckling [TS]

01:30:29   pirate adventure like treasure island [TS]

01:30:32   but you felt it didn't have quite enough [TS]

01:30:33   airship yeah we don't have we wouldn't [TS]

01:30:36   do Howl's Moving Castle we have not M [TS]

01:30:39   stands my favorite [TS]

01:30:41   it's my favorite I wonder where we will [TS]

01:30:42   go next with miyazaki movie club it [TS]

01:30:47   could be there we could go on a moving [TS]

01:30:48   castle its paws [TS]

01:30:49   able to party o.o know huh all right [TS]

01:30:52   things to say about you [TS]

01:30:54   I'll i thought it was alright my yeah [TS]

01:30:56   it's weird but we'll get there we'll get [TS]

01:30:57   there all right but that is for another [TS]

01:30:59   podcast so for this podcast I think it's [TS]

01:31:01   time to wrap up another edition of our [TS]

01:31:03   miyazaki movie club and I want to thank [TS]

01:31:26   nothing's worse than getting your [TS]

01:31:32   fox squirrels more fox squirrels and the [TS]

01:31:36   John siracusa did we determine if the [TS]

01:31:40   that but i can tell you that if you keep [TS]

01:31:42   watching the credits at the end you find [TS]

01:31:44   out the tree talks [TS]

01:31:46   oh that's right in my wheelhouse can [TS]

01:31:48   anybody hear the tree is the question [TS]

01:31:50   every tree floats above the earth and [TS]

01:31:52   nobody here tree going through to make a [TS]

01:31:54   sound [TS]

01:31:55   it says me-yow in the voice of phil [TS]
