Hypercritical

99: New Siracusa County Bros. U

00:00:00   no no don't let that happen this is [TS]

00:00:04   hypercritical a talk show ruminating on [TS]

00:00:05   exactly what is wrong in the world of [TS]

00:00:07   Apple and related technologies and [TS]

00:00:09   businesses nothing is so perfect that it [TS]

00:00:11   can't be complained about by my friend [TS]

00:00:13   and yours John Siracusa I am Dan [TS]

00:00:17   Benjamin today is Friday December 24 [TS]

00:00:19   2012 this is our 99th second last [TS]

00:00:25   episode of all time we would like to say [TS]

00:00:30   thank you very much to our sponsors [TS]

00:00:31   hover com source bits calm and [TS]

00:00:34   shutterstock.com tell you all about them [TS]

00:00:36   as show continues we would also like to [TS]

00:00:38   say thank you very much to our bandwidth [TS]

00:00:40   sponsor has been with us all for the [TS]

00:00:42   month of December its igloo your digital [TS]

00:00:45   workplace that means you can give [TS]

00:00:47   updates have discussions and share files [TS]

00:00:48   with your team all in one place sign up [TS]

00:00:50   and get started at igloo software com / [TS]

00:00:54   5 by 5 do you have any opening opening [TS]

00:01:00   statements about the t-shirt before we [TS]

00:01:01   begin show proper ah yes that's right we [TS]

00:01:04   do have an update here about the t-shirt [TS]

00:01:07   so if you remember last week on episode [TS]

00:01:09   number 98 we did a we did a poll [TS]

00:01:16   hypercritical t-shirt poll and I'm going [TS]

00:01:21   to go in and close the poll right now [TS]

00:01:22   but we have results from this poll we [TS]

00:01:28   asked the listeners on the show we said [TS]

00:01:31   what what kind of t-shirt would you want [TS]

00:01:34   would you want a t-shirt for [TS]

00:01:36   hypercritical that excuse me that has [TS]

00:01:40   just the word or you know the stylized [TS]

00:01:44   text hypercritical on it that was one [TS]

00:01:47   choice another choice was it could it [TS]

00:01:52   could just it could have the there are [TS]

00:01:55   many things wrong with this shirt text [TS]

00:01:57   and your avatar on it and then the final [TS]

00:02:00   choice was your avatar with hyper the [TS]

00:02:04   word just hyper the word hypercritical [TS]

00:02:06   on it we had 3330 votes and I am now I'm [TS]

00:02:12   now turning it off it is [TS]

00:02:13   off now though a voting is closed of [TS]

00:02:16   those 3330 votes 1661 voted for just [TS]

00:02:22   hypercritical that's forty nine point [TS]

00:02:24   eighty eight percent thirteen hundred [TS]

00:02:26   and fifteen voted for the Siracusa [TS]

00:02:28   avatar plus there are many things wrong [TS]

00:02:30   with the shirt at 39.4 nine percent and [TS]

00:02:32   closing it out 10.6 three percent voted [TS]

00:02:35   for siracusa avatar plus the word [TS]

00:02:37   hypercritical 354 votes there so the [TS]

00:02:40   clear winner as you I believe you [TS]

00:02:42   predicted and we we both thought would [TS]

00:02:45   happen just hypercritical far and away [TS]

00:02:49   the winner so if it again you you get [TS]

00:02:53   final choice here but that sounds like [TS]

00:02:56   what's going to happen that sounds like [TS]

00:02:57   the the winner that sounds like where [TS]

00:02:59   we're going with this yeah unless you're [TS]

00:03:01   gonna make two shirts there you know the [TS]

00:03:02   one to pick and that people have pointed [TS]

00:03:04   out that it's not a majority it was only [TS]

00:03:06   you know forty-nine percent and then [TS]

00:03:08   other people who were who didn't want [TS]

00:03:10   just that shirt said well if you combine [TS]

00:03:11   the other two items it makes a larger [TS]

00:03:14   percentage than the 49 so that shows [TS]

00:03:16   that people at least one and avatar [TS]

00:03:18   because the other two items have an [TS]

00:03:19   avatar in the one that one doesn't but [TS]

00:03:21   that doesn't make any sense because if [TS]

00:03:23   you combine the first and third choices [TS]

00:03:26   you can say see people want the word [TS]

00:03:27   hypercritical and it and that [TS]

00:03:29   combination becomes the majority so [TS]

00:03:31   anyway we're not gonna have 18 polls and [TS]

00:03:33   runoff elections or whatever it seems [TS]

00:03:36   like if you wanted to get everybody you [TS]

00:03:38   can make the top two shirts but if you [TS]

00:03:39   want to get the most people and just [TS]

00:03:40   make one shirt it's got to be the one [TS]

00:03:42   that got the most votes right so there [TS]

00:03:44   you have it so the one with the most [TS]

00:03:48   votes wins yep and we will produce this [TS]

00:03:54   shirt we need to figure out a color [TS]

00:03:57   that's a inconsequential me and a font I [TS]

00:04:02   mean like I don't know if they can [TS]

00:04:03   exactly match the night course I can we [TS]

00:04:05   will create the art so I mean like the [TS]

00:04:07   color the color of the shirt itself not [TS]

00:04:09   the thought on it like you know like the [TS]

00:04:11   because the what he called the cover art [TS]

00:04:13   for the show what would you call that [TS]

00:04:15   yeah whatever color green that is like [TS]

00:04:18   that with white text on it seems like it [TS]

00:04:19   would look good or whatever but yeah [TS]

00:04:20   just you know once you have some design [TS]

00:04:23   to send it my way and I will give it a [TS]

00:04:24   thumbs up or thumbs down [TS]

00:04:25   but there's not much room for variation [TS]

00:04:27   and what we're going to do in the past [TS]

00:04:30   the last time that I did that I did [TS]

00:04:32   shirts I did a run of five by five [TS]

00:04:34   shirts and in addition we did the back [TS]

00:04:36   to work the back to work that's fine for [TS]

00:04:39   Merlin shirt but logistically figuring [TS]

00:04:43   out and separating out because I you [TS]

00:04:46   know you you will you will get profits [TS]

00:04:49   from the shirt you're gonna you stand to [TS]

00:04:50   make some money here you might you might [TS]

00:04:52   even know they might even be able to [TS]

00:04:54   quit your job but these shirts you will [TS]

00:05:00   profit from them so it was it was a [TS]

00:05:02   logistical nightmare to separate the two [TS]

00:05:06   different shirts because just the way [TS]

00:05:07   the systems are set up and splitting it [TS]

00:05:09   out so these are just going to be doing [TS]

00:05:11   hypercritical shirts and Hattie and I [TS]

00:05:14   will be packaging the shirts ourselves [TS]

00:05:16   there you go by hand you're gonna put [TS]

00:05:19   like a mint into each one a mint maybe a [TS]

00:05:23   sticker for some people like if we know [TS]

00:05:25   who you are if we recognize your name [TS]

00:05:27   from the chat room or something maybe [TS]

00:05:28   you get a sticker I'm just saying all [TS]

00:05:31   right that's it shirt up date pull [TS]

00:05:35   closed ok and i hope by everyone i hope [TS]

00:05:39   everyone who answered the poll buys a [TS]

00:05:41   shirt it's the dangers that people [TS]

00:05:43   really want to vote in a poll but don't [TS]

00:05:44   want to buy a shirt obviously i don't [TS]

00:05:46   expect the people who voted for the [TS]

00:05:48   other shirts to buy the shirt that they [TS]

00:05:49   didn't vote for but surely the people [TS]

00:05:50   who voted for this shirt now that [TS]

00:05:52   they're going to get it i hope they buy [TS]

00:05:54   it I do too yeah alright some follow up [TS]

00:05:59   a little bit before we begin our wii u [TS]

00:06:03   topic for the day first come most common [TS]

00:06:07   piece of fall from last week is everyone [TS]

00:06:08   lunch tell me about command l in itunes [TS]

00:06:10   which brings you to the currently [TS]

00:06:11   playing track I last week we're talking [TS]

00:06:15   about iTunes 11 the point I was trying [TS]

00:06:17   and apparently failing to make was about [TS]

00:06:20   hidden state and making the UI simpler [TS]

00:06:23   than the functionality of the app so let [TS]

00:06:25   me give you one more brief try here i [TS]

00:06:27   think i think i've got this time to [TS]

00:06:28   clarify what it is I'm talking about ah [TS]

00:06:30   it's just one play pause stop button [TS]

00:06:33   like the big circle button and on iTunes [TS]

00:06:35   the old version and like the center [TS]

00:06:37   button on the new version there's just [TS]

00:06:38   one of those [TS]

00:06:39   buttons right when you select a track in [TS]

00:06:42   the interface that button may or may not [TS]

00:06:45   apply to the thing you just selected [TS]

00:06:47   depending on one of those pieces of [TS]

00:06:49   hidden state so the functionality of the [TS]

00:06:51   app is more complicated it should really [TS]

00:06:53   have not i'm saying it should have more [TS]

00:06:55   than one button but they there's it [TS]

00:06:57   there's just one button but there's more [TS]

00:07:00   than one thing it could possibly apply [TS]

00:07:01   to and so and it depends on this thing [TS]

00:07:04   that you can't see so internally it has [TS]

00:07:07   to ask okay all right so you selected a [TS]

00:07:09   track does that big button apply to the [TS]

00:07:11   track you just select it but first ask [TS]

00:07:13   to ask is a track currently playing if [TS]

00:07:15   the answer to that question is yes it [TS]

00:07:17   says is the track you selected the one [TS]

00:07:20   that's currently playing if the answer [TS]

00:07:22   to that is yes then make it a pause [TS]

00:07:24   button and have it apply to the to the [TS]

00:07:26   track that you just select it if the [TS]

00:07:29   answer is no then how'd it be a stop [TS]

00:07:32   button and have it applied to the track [TS]

00:07:34   it's not the one that you selected but [TS]

00:07:36   rather the track that's currently [TS]

00:07:37   playing and backing out one letter C I [TS]

00:07:39   wish I have curly braces in the show or [TS]

00:07:41   you know begin end or whatever the Ruby [TS]

00:07:44   people like in 15 I lanius curlies there [TS]

00:07:48   yeah if there's not a currently playing [TS]

00:07:51   track then it's a play button and it [TS]

00:07:53   does apply to the track you've selected [TS]

00:07:54   this is like three level nesting of [TS]

00:07:56   logic just to explain when i click a [TS]

00:07:58   track what does that button apply to and [TS]

00:08:00   what does it do so it does different [TS]

00:08:02   things and it applies to different [TS]

00:08:04   things all depending on this piece of [TS]

00:08:05   hidden state information internal this [TS]

00:08:07   in this internal logic of the [TS]

00:08:09   application would it be more or less [TS]

00:08:12   confusing to have multiple buttons maybe [TS]

00:08:14   it would be more confusing I'm not [TS]

00:08:15   proposing a solution to this problem [TS]

00:08:17   just saying the way it's set up is the [TS]

00:08:18   user interface tries to provide this [TS]

00:08:19   very simple thing like they don't want [TS]

00:08:22   you to have tons of controls in seven [TS]

00:08:23   different windows and five different [TS]

00:08:25   things to look at but then you're just [TS]

00:08:27   pushing the complexity on to the user to [TS]

00:08:29   understand uh-oh when I select this [TS]

00:08:31   track what is that middle button going [TS]

00:08:32   to do and if you don't think about you [TS]

00:08:33   just reach for you let go accidentally [TS]

00:08:35   hit stops and I've lost my playback [TS]

00:08:36   position and I didn't do what I wanted [TS]

00:08:39   to do and it really should have applied [TS]

00:08:40   to that thing so it's not so much about [TS]

00:08:41   finding the be currently playing track [TS]

00:08:44   it's about the fact that when you click [TS]

00:08:45   on something that button may or may not [TS]

00:08:48   apply to the thing that you clicked on [TS]

00:08:49   which is not you know a simple interface [TS]

00:08:51   would be like you click on a thing and [TS]

00:08:52   then you click one of [TS]

00:08:53   button somewhere else that applies to [TS]

00:08:54   the thing and that's not really the case [TS]

00:08:55   in itunes so and command l i would say [TS]

00:08:58   as a symptom of this because it's like [TS]

00:09:00   well we know that we have this multiple [TS]

00:09:03   state thing so we want people to be able [TS]

00:09:04   to quickly go back and do something to [TS]

00:09:06   this track that's playing so that you [TS]

00:09:08   know because if you go back and pause [TS]

00:09:09   the track that's playing then when you [TS]

00:09:10   go to a different place now when you [TS]

00:09:12   selected the middle button will apply to [TS]

00:09:13   the track this plane because you can [TS]

00:09:14   start playing the new one because you [TS]

00:09:15   pause the old one but if you haven't [TS]

00:09:17   balls the old one the button stops the [TS]

00:09:18   old one de yucky so that's what I was [TS]

00:09:22   trying to get up not so much that the [TS]

00:09:24   iTunes makes it too hard to find the [TS]

00:09:26   currently playing track but that itunes [TS]

00:09:27   even requires you at all to find they're [TS]

00:09:29   currently playing track because of this [TS]

00:09:31   mismatch between what the application [TS]

00:09:33   can do and the simplified interface that [TS]

00:09:35   they want to present to you and related [TS]

00:09:38   to iTunes 11 many people wanted to point [TS]

00:09:40   out that my guest for when iTunes 11 [TS]

00:09:42   might have been released with November [TS]

00:09:43   31st which is not a day hmm yeah I I do [TS]

00:09:51   not know how many days are in months [TS]

00:09:52   period the end I want to try to learn on [TS]

00:09:55   your knuckles or what it on the knuckles [TS]

00:09:56   yeah i know the knuckle thing but i [TS]

00:09:58   forgot the knuckle think so right forget [TS]

00:10:00   but this reminds me of you know because [TS]

00:10:04   i don't know these things because dates [TS]

00:10:05   are annoying anyone who's been a [TS]

00:10:06   programmer for a while so annoyed by [TS]

00:10:07   dates I remember maybe I told the story [TS]

00:10:10   already but i think it was in formics [TS]

00:10:12   the IBM on database yeah a is no not and [TS]

00:10:17   then in denen did that was the follow up [TS]

00:10:19   to it right Oh ax is an operating system [TS]

00:10:21   in formics is like their crappy version [TS]

00:10:23   of oracle likes primary database really [TS]

00:10:26   old i forget what its origins were so [TS]

00:10:28   it's gonna be X I'm sure it did that's [TS]

00:10:31   what I used on I think I mean I'm Watson [TS]

00:10:33   trading lots of date things that lots of [TS]

00:10:35   databases have date functions and then [TS]

00:10:37   because you don't want to do date [TS]

00:10:38   Matthew want to be able to do you know [TS]

00:10:39   select date created plus one day from [TS]

00:10:40   orders because you don't want to figure [TS]

00:10:42   out what you know the date plus one day [TS]

00:10:44   as you want the database there was got [TS]

00:10:45   some manipulation libraries it knows [TS]

00:10:47   that it's a state store internally suici [TS]

00:10:49   select date plus one day there's [TS]

00:10:51   something some sort of syntax that [TS]

00:10:52   expresses that and informix provided [TS]

00:10:55   these functions where you could add and [TS]

00:10:57   subtract units you just say one day one [TS]

00:10:59   year one week one month or whatever I [TS]

00:11:01   don't know if you could do month but [TS]

00:11:03   that's a whole weekend worms but but [TS]

00:11:05   certainly days you could [TS]

00:11:06   created plus one day the problem was [TS]

00:11:08   that if the date created was April [TS]

00:11:09   thirtieth informix would gladly add one [TS]

00:11:12   day to it and come up with April 31st [TS]

00:11:13   and then it would immediately explode [TS]

00:11:15   because April 31st isn't a date so I was [TS]

00:11:18   the worst of all possible was like why [TS]

00:11:19   even provide a date library if you're [TS]

00:11:20   not gonna do actual date math and then [TS]

00:11:22   when you do the date math wrong you the [TS]

00:11:24   whole query blows up and you if your [TS]

00:11:26   throws an exception so that was [TS]

00:11:27   maddening anyway that's why I date [TS]

00:11:31   manipulation library should exist and [TS]

00:11:32   maybe I should have used one in my brain [TS]

00:11:33   when I guessed what day iTunes 11 was [TS]

00:11:36   released but alas all right a couple [TS]

00:11:42   more pieces here we speculated about the [TS]

00:11:44   order of authors on academic [TS]

00:11:47   publications briefly when discussing a [TS]

00:11:49   paper about changing programs at runtime [TS]

00:11:51   and Kieran Healy was the first to [TS]

00:11:53   provide a nice link for this that I put [TS]

00:11:55   in the show notes it's an answer on the [TS]

00:11:56   academia stack exchange that talks about [TS]

00:11:59   the water authors and publications and [TS]

00:12:02   the short answer is it depends of course [TS]

00:12:04   it depends so you can read the answer [TS]

00:12:05   for the longer version and academics can [TS]

00:12:09   all debate each other about what is the [TS]

00:12:10   correct method but it really just [TS]

00:12:12   depends um all right one more thing last [TS]

00:12:16   show I talked about those glasses that [TS]

00:12:18   invert your vision yeah you said these [TS]

00:12:21   are the things where if you put you put [TS]

00:12:22   on these glasses and inverts your vision [TS]

00:12:24   in the new saying that your brain will [TS]

00:12:26   adjust to having your vision upside down [TS]

00:12:29   and they you'll be able to function [TS]

00:12:31   after short period of time in that way [TS]

00:12:33   yeah I don't remember that topic came up [TS]

00:12:35   but anyway uh Gordon Shepherd wrote in [TS]

00:12:38   to burst my bubble that apparently this [TS]

00:12:39   was a scientific study that was done but [TS]

00:12:41   it was done in 1897 by George Stratton [TS]

00:12:44   and it was called vision without an [TS]

00:12:46   inversion of the retinal image and he [TS]

00:12:48   wrote about it experience with the [TS]

00:12:50   glasses and said after a while it seemed [TS]

00:12:52   right side up to him and everything [TS]

00:12:53   which is all well and good except that [TS]

00:12:55   you know scientists have tried to [TS]

00:12:57   reproduce that study and none of them [TS]

00:12:59   have been able to reproduce it everyone [TS]

00:13:00   who tries in the most recent was in 1999 [TS]

00:13:02   said eventually you get used to it being [TS]

00:13:04   upside down but it never looks right [TS]

00:13:06   side up to you so this is one of those [TS]

00:13:09   things that is too good to be true it [TS]

00:13:12   seems like and although this experiment [TS]

00:13:14   did exist and get spattered it around [TS]

00:13:15   and kind of an urban legend type of [TS]

00:13:17   thing if people can't reproduce it then [TS]

00:13:19   you have [TS]

00:13:20   George Stratton was talking out his butt [TS]

00:13:22   in 1897 so bummer there I like the idea [TS]

00:13:26   that it would eventually look right side [TS]

00:13:27   up they did say that you know that they [TS]

00:13:29   do things where they have glasses that [TS]

00:13:31   distort your vision by making it look [TS]

00:13:34   like a funhouse mirror or whatever and [TS]

00:13:35   your brain does eventually make that [TS]

00:13:36   look normal total inversion it doesn't [TS]

00:13:38   it doesn't account for oh so oh well oh [TS]

00:13:41   god I thought it was only a little bit [TS]

00:13:45   of follow-up I guess has two more semi [TS]

00:13:46   big things right the first one is I [TS]

00:13:48   tried to find it back to work episode of [TS]

00:13:49   this refers to but I couldn't because it [TS]

00:13:51   was just a minor one off point do you [TS]

00:13:53   remember the episode when you're talking [TS]

00:13:54   to Merlin and he mentioned that he was [TS]

00:13:55   he said I'm gonna learn the terminal dan [TS]

00:13:57   I'm gonna learn it it was it was [TS]

00:13:59   dedicating himself to trying to learn [TS]

00:14:00   wasn't just a relatively recent episode [TS]

00:14:03   though yeah it was like one or two [TS]

00:14:05   episodes ago but I couldn't find a buddy [TS]

00:14:06   but he was saying that he wanted to [TS]

00:14:08   learn more about that part of the system [TS]

00:14:09   who knows if he's actually going to do [TS]

00:14:11   it but anyway when I heard that like so [TS]

00:14:14   I know what he means when he says and I [TS]

00:14:16   hear this low I'm gonna learn the [TS]

00:14:17   terminal learning the terminal in Mac OS [TS]

00:14:18   10 we all know what that's community is [TS]

00:14:20   shorthand and and it's clear that the [TS]

00:14:24   idea has been communicated I've talked [TS]

00:14:25   in the past that you know writing and [TS]

00:14:27   speaking of rubber regardless of what [TS]

00:14:28   you're saying that the main point is [TS]

00:14:31   that you're supposed to be communicating [TS]

00:14:32   something IQ successfully communicate [TS]

00:14:34   that idea then it doesn't really matter [TS]

00:14:35   so much about how you said it like [TS]

00:14:37   that's the details it's better to be [TS]

00:14:39   successful at communication but not be [TS]

00:14:41   strictly correct or formal or whatever [TS]

00:14:42   then the reverse of being correct and [TS]

00:14:44   formal but then you don't communicate [TS]

00:14:46   your idea but unfortunately what's also [TS]

00:14:48   being communicated when you say you want [TS]

00:14:51   to learn the terminal is the idea that [TS]

00:14:53   the terminal application is where all [TS]

00:14:55   the stuff that you're want to learn [TS]

00:14:57   resides like that if you deleted [TS]

00:14:59   terminal app from your Applications [TS]

00:15:01   folder that all that stuff is gone uh [TS]

00:15:04   and I I'm sure Marilyn didn't mean that [TS]

00:15:08   because he probably knows that's not the [TS]

00:15:09   case but i think that additional piece [TS]

00:15:11   of communication that you're [TS]

00:15:12   accidentally sending along by saying [TS]

00:15:15   learning the terminal is bad and it [TS]

00:15:17   ended grates on me and so my advice to [TS]

00:15:19   merlin and others is don't say learn the [TS]

00:15:22   terminal because if you really want to [TS]

00:15:23   learn all the stuff that the terminal [TS]

00:15:25   provides you access to you can start by [TS]

00:15:28   being clearer about communicating what [TS]

00:15:30   it is that you're actually learning and [TS]

00:15:32   learn [TS]

00:15:32   the words in the vocabulary and [TS]

00:15:34   everything because i think you know part [TS]

00:15:37   of the the entry point to learning the [TS]

00:15:39   unix velocity Munich's is learning what [TS]

00:15:41   unix actually is and how it manifests [TS]

00:15:44   itself and the terminal application is [TS]

00:15:45   very very far from that that is merely [TS]

00:15:47   you know a window into that world it's [TS]

00:15:51   an application that simulates a [TS]

00:15:52   character-based input and output device [TS]

00:15:55   remove that application all that stuff [TS]

00:15:58   is still there you haven't removed any [TS]

00:16:00   of the eunuch stuff it's yeah so that [TS]

00:16:02   that is like step zero in understanding [TS]

00:16:05   unix is that it's not inside the [TS]

00:16:07   terminal application so don't say [TS]

00:16:10   learning determine that's my advice for [TS]

00:16:12   the day oh one more final piece of [TS]

00:16:16   follow-up here I think before we get to [TS]

00:16:17   the Wii U which may be long um so Gruber [TS]

00:16:22   did an article this week called a [TS]

00:16:24   dropbox colon the linchpin where he [TS]

00:16:27   cites an article by warren ellis who [TS]

00:16:28   describes how he uses his ipad to write [TS]

00:16:31   and uh Gruber says that it's good that [TS]

00:16:36   people like to use their iPads to get [TS]

00:16:37   work done but the scary part is a [TS]

00:16:39   recurrent theme that he sees whenever he [TS]

00:16:41   sees someone's story about how they use [TS]

00:16:42   the iPad is that the dropbox is the [TS]

00:16:45   linchpin of the workflow like they [TS]

00:16:47   couldn't get any work done if they [TS]

00:16:48   didn't have grok box and Gruber says [TS]

00:16:50   it's scary because drop box outside [TS]

00:16:51   apples control and if not for dropbox a [TS]

00:16:54   lot of these people wouldn't even [TS]

00:16:55   consider using the ipad to work with and [TS]

00:16:57   it's scary because Apple's iCloud fall [TS]

00:17:00   short iCloud falls short of short of [TS]

00:17:02   Dropbox ah I think I mean my experience [TS]

00:17:06   echoes if you see someone who uses an [TS]

00:17:07   ipad I know in my own iPad usage Dropbox [TS]

00:17:09   is a key part of getting stuff done and [TS]

00:17:11   if you took away Dropbox from those [TS]

00:17:13   people like I mean I guess we'd come up [TS]

00:17:15   with something else that sort of works [TS]

00:17:17   but you know I cloud does not work the [TS]

00:17:18   way a lot of people want file management [TS]

00:17:21   to work and I would think would make a [TS]

00:17:23   lot of people said so Gruber concludes [TS]

00:17:26   by saying long time readers know that I [TS]

00:17:29   seldom opine that Apple should acquire [TS]

00:17:31   other companies but Apple should buy [TS]

00:17:32   Dropbox right now the second piece of [TS]

00:17:35   this is Michael psy whose blogs also [TS]

00:17:39   gradient should read if you don't he [TS]

00:17:41   cites Gruber's article and quotes that [TS]

00:17:45   he says [TS]

00:17:46   Gruber says that opposite by Dropbox [TS]

00:17:47   this might be a good move for Apple but [TS]

00:17:49   I doubted we would be good for dropbox [TS]

00:17:51   users and what I thought when I read [TS]

00:17:54   this I guess its third level commentary [TS]

00:17:58   because Gruber's comments hannah warren [TS]

00:17:59   ellis and sighs commenting on Gruber's [TS]

00:18:01   commenting and one else is it this is [TS]

00:18:04   how you can tell that Apple is still no [TS]

00:18:06   good at network services and that Apple [TS]

00:18:09   doesn't really understand them when the [TS]

00:18:12   prospect of Apple buying a popular well [TS]

00:18:15   implemented network servers causes [TS]

00:18:18   people to fear for that service that's [TS]

00:18:20   how you can tell that Apple still is not [TS]

00:18:22   I mean as you can say all you want I was [TS]

00:18:24   pretty good and apples not as bad as [TS]

00:18:26   people think or whatever but if you [TS]

00:18:27   throw out there hey there's a popular [TS]

00:18:29   service meeting apples buying it [TS]

00:18:31   everybody goes no no don't let that [TS]

00:18:32   happen until until that changes that's a [TS]

00:18:36   bad sign for Apple because we say oh [TS]

00:18:37   they'll just screw it up or they'll just [TS]

00:18:39   make it Apple only and that's what [TS]

00:18:41   another way that Apple doesn't get it it [TS]

00:18:42   network service is made much less [TS]

00:18:43   valuable when you can only use it with [TS]

00:18:45   one brand of device and so nobody wants [TS]

00:18:47   helpful to my dropbox feels like don't [TS]

00:18:49   put apple anywhere near my dropbox that [TS]

00:18:51   they're gonna make a mac only your iOS [TS]

00:18:53   only remove the web interface or just [TS]

00:18:55   screw it up in some way and that is the [TS]

00:18:58   most telling thing i think of about when [TS]

00:19:00   we stop having that opinion we will know [TS]

00:19:02   that apple has truly turned a corner on [TS]

00:19:03   network services and Google understands [TS]

00:19:06   this philosophy like you know for all [TS]

00:19:07   the things you may hate about Google [TS]

00:19:08   they understand this philosophy of like [TS]

00:19:10   you know when they buy a company they [TS]

00:19:12   may destroy it and ruin all the good [TS]

00:19:14   things about it but they don't like [TS]

00:19:15   confine it just Android like you know [TS]

00:19:16   Apple maps is on iOS right they want you [TS]

00:19:19   to be able to get to your gmail from [TS]

00:19:20   anywhere than not saying okay well we [TS]

00:19:23   can provide the best integration if we [TS]

00:19:24   only allow you access gmail from Android [TS]

00:19:26   devices now that's not how how it works [TS]

00:19:28   they understand the value of network [TS]

00:19:30   services they got to be available [TS]

00:19:31   everywhere work everywhere all that [TS]

00:19:32   stuff so ah that's something to watch [TS]

00:19:35   for in the coming years then the next [TS]

00:19:37   time you know Apple is going to buy some [TS]

00:19:40   popular network service look at people's [TS]

00:19:43   reactions and see if the fans that [TS]

00:19:44   service say no don't let Apple by me [TS]

00:19:46   it's kind of trying to think of an [TS]

00:19:46   example like we used to be afraid that [TS]

00:19:48   Microsoft would buy a company that we [TS]

00:19:49   liked because that would sort of crush [TS]

00:19:51   it and it's kind of the same way we're [TS]

00:19:53   afraid that Google's ever going to buy [TS]

00:19:54   like a software company that makes [TS]

00:19:56   applications like we didn't want Google [TS]

00:19:57   to buy Sparrow because you know they [TS]

00:19:59   kill it off [TS]

00:20:00   alright so this is the reverse that we [TS]

00:20:01   do so we don't want Google to buy like [TS]

00:20:03   native applications companies and we [TS]

00:20:05   don't want Apple to buy network service [TS]

00:20:06   companies what if they just owned a [TS]

00:20:11   portion of it a portion of what of the [TS]

00:20:14   company what if they just had some money [TS]

00:20:16   they were just in that in that way [TS]

00:20:17   because i feel like if they owe them [TS]

00:20:19   let's say they own a minority stake in [TS]

00:20:22   it but they still in a stake in it [TS]

00:20:25   because i think i think even though we [TS]

00:20:26   know Dropbox is doing really well like [TS]

00:20:29   there's always that fear that it could [TS]

00:20:31   go away and somehow having like a [TS]

00:20:34   significant apple investment in it would [TS]

00:20:37   make me feel really good like well [TS]

00:20:38   that's never going away now you know for [TS]

00:20:40   a while there was nothing for Apple [TS]

00:20:41   really to buy with Dropbox it was only [TS]

00:20:43   once native applications started [TS]

00:20:45   integrating Dropbox into them like using [TS]

00:20:47   the dropbox api for one within their [TS]

00:20:49   applications that's when Apple really [TS]

00:20:51   are now you have something because Apple [TS]

00:20:53   could have made what Dropbox made on its [TS]

00:20:55   own like technically speaking you know [TS]

00:20:57   in Firefox start as a bunch of Python [TS]

00:20:58   scripts and on Apple's got good [TS]

00:20:59   developers they could have made exactly [TS]

00:21:00   what Dropbox is they didn't though they [TS]

00:21:02   didn't want to make that they wanted to [TS]

00:21:03   make something different but at any [TS]

00:21:06   point until Dropbox starting getting [TS]

00:21:08   integrated into all these apps Apple [TS]

00:21:09   could have said okay well you know this [TS]

00:21:11   iCloud document container thing is not [TS]

00:21:12   working out let's just make Dropbox they [TS]

00:21:14   just don't want to do that and I'm it [TS]

00:21:16   makes me wonder why it you know the [TS]

00:21:17   rumor is that Apple tried to buy Dropbox [TS]

00:21:19   why just to eliminate a competitor [TS]

00:21:21   because you could have made something [TS]

00:21:22   just like back when Apple was supposedly [TS]

00:21:24   bidding for dropbox there's no reason [TS]

00:21:26   that Apple couldn't have uh just made [TS]

00:21:29   that themselves Brian that makes me [TS]

00:21:30   think the only reason they wanted to buy [TS]

00:21:31   it was just to get it again remove that [TS]

00:21:33   distraction from the screen so now [TS]

00:21:35   everybody let's all just concentrate on [TS]

00:21:36   iCloud document containers and don't be [TS]

00:21:38   distracted by the drop box but now it's [TS]

00:21:40   too late like applications are written [TS]

00:21:42   against Dropbox and have apple bought [TS]

00:21:44   they would have to continue to support [TS]

00:21:45   the API for at least some period of time [TS]

00:21:46   and if they killed that people would [TS]

00:21:47   hate them and it's just it's too late [TS]

00:21:49   for that to happen like Apple buying or [TS]

00:21:51   investing in dropbox doesn't that you [TS]

00:21:54   know Apple benefits now Apple is [TS]

00:21:55   benefiting now from a healthy [TS]

00:21:57   independent thriving Dropbox even if it [TS]

00:21:59   is like a thorn in the side of their [TS]

00:22:00   supposed one true way to do document [TS]

00:22:02   management that we all hate huh so I [TS]

00:22:05   don't know I don't know how this comes [TS]

00:22:06   but there yeah at the time the time to [TS]

00:22:09   strike is fast in anyway apparently [TS]

00:22:10   Dropbox didn't want to sell because I [TS]

00:22:12   supposedly they had bid [TS]

00:22:13   a lot of different people and didn't [TS]

00:22:14   take any of them yeah they have not they [TS]

00:22:16   have no interest in selling and I don't [TS]

00:22:18   know what their I mean the one interview [TS]

00:22:20   that I recall reading with them is that [TS]

00:22:22   they didn't they don't want to sell the [TS]

00:22:24   simple reason that they want to build a [TS]

00:22:25   big business i remember being that being [TS]

00:22:27   one of the quotes is that they were [TS]

00:22:28   saying their goal is to be a big [TS]

00:22:32   business they want to have a cool office [TS]

00:22:34   they won't have lots of employees they [TS]

00:22:35   want to do amazing things and they don't [TS]

00:22:37   see an exit through acquisition as a [TS]

00:22:41   path to that and that makes sense and [TS]

00:22:43   guess what there they've got a great [TS]

00:22:45   service I my opinion they're like the [TS]

00:22:47   number one service out there for this [TS]

00:22:49   and I don't yeah but don't you think [TS]

00:22:51   their service has like a date stamp on [TS]

00:22:53   it like it's got an expiration date can [TS]

00:22:54   you tell me what do you mean like you [TS]

00:22:58   think of think of a company like Dropbox [TS]

00:23:00   in the 80s or something I don't know [TS]

00:23:01   maybe you'd have to be like some company [TS]

00:23:03   that sold like this defragmenting [TS]

00:23:04   software okay for das or something and [TS]

00:23:07   it's like we sell the best disk defrag [TS]

00:23:09   trading software and we don't want to [TS]

00:23:10   sell to anyone else because weird like [TS]

00:23:11   and people say oh you just got one [TS]

00:23:12   product but like but no just everybody [TS]

00:23:14   uses our product you really need to [TS]

00:23:15   defrag your desk and eventually [TS]

00:23:17   defragging your desk isn't something [TS]

00:23:19   that regular people do anymore and like [TS]

00:23:20   that that business that map application [TS]

00:23:22   has expired that business of selling [TS]

00:23:24   that one application it's no longer [TS]

00:23:27   relevant like it didn't become bed [TS]

00:23:28   didn't get beat by competitors Justin [TS]

00:23:30   own cameras about that anymore and in [TS]

00:23:32   theory what Dropbox does dealing with [TS]

00:23:34   network-based files in a folder like if [TS]

00:23:36   Apple had its fantasy way and said we [TS]

00:23:38   have a better way to do files and will [TS]

00:23:39   convince the whole world and eventually [TS]

00:23:40   it will seem barbaric that we ever [TS]

00:23:42   manually dealt files and folders then [TS]

00:23:45   drop box you know through no fault of [TS]

00:23:47   their own except sticking with their one [TS]

00:23:49   product for too long like then its just [TS]

00:23:51   oh well so much for that makes just fade [TS]

00:23:52   away and I feel like a one product [TS]

00:23:56   business like Dropbox seems to be has an [TS]

00:23:58   expiration date on it may be a long [TS]

00:24:00   expiration data may be an expiration [TS]

00:24:01   date after the entire current management [TS]

00:24:02   is retired or dead but it exists versus [TS]

00:24:05   like I want to build it becoming like [TS]

00:24:07   Apple where in you know 30 years it will [TS]

00:24:10   be doing things unimaginative at the [TS]

00:24:12   time the company was founded uh you know [TS]

00:24:15   basically Dropbox needs to show that it [TS]

00:24:18   is more than I mean when your company is [TS]

00:24:20   named after your one product like where [TS]

00:24:21   can you go from there I don't know like [TS]

00:24:23   I'm not saying Dropbox needs to start [TS]

00:24:24   making like a social networking tool [TS]

00:24:26   with a [TS]

00:24:27   image filters all I have it recently out [TS]

00:24:29   of that camera crap but I know I work I [TS]

00:24:31   think Dropbox does have an expiration [TS]

00:24:34   date none I just don't know what that [TS]

00:24:36   date is it's not next year but it's [TS]

00:24:38   there that's it for the follow-up but ok [TS]

00:24:42   first sponsor yeah hover com simplified [TS]

00:24:47   domain management it's my register I've [TS]

00:24:50   choice was before they became a sponsor [TS]

00:24:53   because I really like how simple they [TS]

00:24:55   make everything started talking to him [TS]

00:24:57   and they said oh well you know we want [TS]

00:24:58   to sponsor some your stuff this is a you [TS]

00:25:00   know I don't six months ago maybe it's [TS]

00:25:03   more than that actually and I said well [TS]

00:25:05   would be great because i use you guys [TS]

00:25:06   what i like about them and what I think [TS]

00:25:09   you guys will like about them you know [TS]

00:25:11   what it's the thing John it's really [TS]

00:25:13   easy because people like us we register [TS]

00:25:15   domain names all the time and you figure [TS]

00:25:17   you know try something new will try [TS]

00:25:18   something a little different will try [TS]

00:25:19   something new once in a while see how it [TS]

00:25:22   works just one domain name then you'll [TS]

00:25:25   find you like them so much you want to [TS]

00:25:26   switch everything over there and they [TS]

00:25:27   make that really easy because they I [TS]

00:25:29   just saw somebody tweeted me about this [TS]

00:25:30   that make it really easy to do that [TS]

00:25:32   because they have this domain name [TS]

00:25:34   transfer valet service I mean there's [TS]

00:25:36   simple service that they offer is as [TS]

00:25:39   simple as it could possibly be they [TS]

00:25:41   don't upsell you on stuff they give you [TS]

00:25:43   free who is privacy and then if you want [TS]

00:25:46   they will handle the entire domain name [TS]

00:25:48   transfer process for you for you like [TS]

00:25:51   everything they'll do everything they [TS]

00:25:53   don't even charge for it you just want [TS]

00:25:56   to register commnet whatever you can [TS]

00:25:58   just go and do that or you can do more [TS]

00:26:01   stuff like DNS management which is built [TS]

00:26:03   in they have add-on which email hosting [TS]

00:26:04   and more and you can use the code dan [TS]

00:26:07   sent me you get ten percent off [TS]

00:26:09   everything that you buy Hakam / dan sent [TS]

00:26:12   me supports the show it supports five by [TS]

00:26:14   five and it gives you ten percent off or [TS]

00:26:16   you can just enter in the code dance at [TS]

00:26:18   me when you're checking out like if [TS]

00:26:19   you're already customer so go check them [TS]

00:26:22   out hover com / dan sent me people in [TS]

00:26:28   chat room a complain there was only 20 [TS]

00:26:29   minutes of follow-up don't worry guys [TS]

00:26:30   the wii u might take a while and then [TS]

00:26:32   after the wii u if we have any time left [TS]

00:26:35   dan can ask us questions well I have [TS]

00:26:37   some questions there you go so I think [TS]

00:26:39   it'll be fine all right [TS]

00:26:41   today's topic today's one and only topic [TS]

00:26:43   the wii u hopefully provided by Dan now [TS]

00:26:48   thoroughly play tested by myself and the [TS]

00:26:51   rest of my family very cool what overall [TS]

00:26:55   overall impressions thumbs up thumbs [TS]

00:26:56   down let's start with that we end with [TS]

00:26:59   the overall impressions you can end with [TS]

00:27:01   the conclusion yeah but and there's a [TS]

00:27:02   lot of people who want you know they [TS]

00:27:03   want to read that last thing first and [TS]

00:27:06   then diamond yeah I don't know if I can [TS]

00:27:09   give it a thumbs up or thumbs down see [TS]

00:27:10   before i got this thing I really you [TS]

00:27:13   know like I'm thinking about what I'm [TS]

00:27:14   going to talk about on the show when I [TS]

00:27:16   talk about it I really did not think [TS]

00:27:18   that I would spend much time or perhaps [TS]

00:27:20   any time talking about the setup process [TS]

00:27:22   of the console but in fact that is what [TS]

00:27:26   I'm going to do now the first part of [TS]

00:27:28   this hmm surprisingly the setup process [TS]

00:27:30   itself was a significant part of my [TS]

00:27:34   experience for this device and not in a [TS]

00:27:36   good way ah alright so i think i have a [TS]

00:27:41   lot of advantages when it comes to [TS]

00:27:42   setting up electronics you know i'm i'm [TS]

00:27:45   electronic guy i'm a computer guy i have [TS]

00:27:47   a basic understanding of networking if [TS]

00:27:49   somebody I can't figure out I know how [TS]

00:27:51   to use Google I good that's all that's [TS]

00:27:54   already like a big leg up on most people [TS]

00:27:56   aren't you when you get a bite [TS]

00:27:57   electronics device don't you sometimes [TS]

00:27:58   think man uh I can set this up but if I [TS]

00:28:02   just threw this to some random person [TS]

00:28:04   who doesn't know anything about [TS]

00:28:05   computers they would struggle yeah then [TS]

00:28:07   nothing calls record yeah they can never [TS]

00:28:08   get it right i mean maybe that's being [TS]

00:28:10   unfair to the murder but basically what [TS]

00:28:12   I'm saying is I feel like I'm not a [TS]

00:28:13   dummy here like I know I know what I'm [TS]

00:28:15   doing I have many many advantages when [TS]

00:28:18   it comes to setting up devices i also [TS]

00:28:20   have a couple of disadvantaged just when [TS]

00:28:22   it comes to setting of devices and other [TS]

00:28:23   people might not have first is I have a [TS]

00:28:25   lot of electronic devices which means my [TS]

00:28:28   setup is extremely complex I don't have [TS]

00:28:29   just one flat screen TV and then this is [TS]

00:28:31   the first thing I'm connecting to it [TS]

00:28:32   right uh and the other one the big one [TS]

00:28:35   that gets me a lot is my network is [TS]

00:28:37   locked down a much more than most [TS]

00:28:39   people's maybe foolishly maybe I'm doing [TS]

00:28:42   this for no reason I shouldn't but you [TS]

00:28:43   know like most nerds like well okay I [TS]

00:28:45   gotta turn on the SuperDuper Wi-Fi [TS]

00:28:47   security and all the other stuff and so [TS]

00:28:49   these two things combined I think it [TS]

00:28:50   should be a wash most of the time like [TS]

00:28:52   I'm good at setting stuff up but i have [TS]

00:28:53   i'm making things harder for [TS]

00:28:55   myself because of you know the way I've [TS]

00:28:57   had everything set up here and the [TS]

00:28:58   complexity of my setup so it should be [TS]

00:29:00   it should you know even now but the the [TS]

00:29:04   wii u setup process conspired to push [TS]

00:29:06   things over into the negative a little [TS]

00:29:08   bit more despite my supposed advantages [TS]

00:29:10   uh and the first thing is this happens [TS]

00:29:15   not just in the wii u bahn a lot of [TS]

00:29:16   devices uh most things that you can buy [TS]

00:29:19   the do network in these days prefer to [TS]

00:29:21   use Wi-Fi for networking sometimes they [TS]

00:29:23   only have Wi-Fi for networking like your [TS]

00:29:25   you rarely see ethernet ports on things [TS]

00:29:27   well a lot of things come with Wi-Fi [TS]

00:29:28   because who has ethernet cables running [TS]

00:29:30   to the back of their TV you know except [TS]

00:29:31   for me right but most people don't know [TS]

00:29:32   don't have a gigabit switch sitting in [TS]

00:29:35   their entertainment center right so they [TS]

00:29:37   use Wi-Fi for everything and that makes [TS]

00:29:39   perfect sense and people like Wi-Fi it's [TS]

00:29:41   like magic you just plug in your blu-ray [TS]

00:29:42   player and it can magically see Netflix [TS]

00:29:43   right and you didn't you know just it [TS]

00:29:45   just worked and they work hard to make [TS]

00:29:47   that just work and most you know most [TS]

00:29:49   isp's routers include Wi-Fi remember [TS]

00:29:51   when they start doing that i'm like wow [TS]

00:29:52   that's gonna means everyone's house [TS]

00:29:53   people just assume you have Wi-Fi like [TS]

00:29:55   if you have an isp you know comcast or [TS]

00:29:57   verizon where everyone just assumes you [TS]

00:29:59   also have Wi-Fi in your house because [TS]

00:30:00   the routers they give you a little [TS]

00:30:02   antennas on okay gifted way to disable [TS]

00:30:06   that yeah if you don't want it like so [TS]

00:30:08   ever that's why all these things come [TS]

00:30:09   with things you know one has cables [TS]

00:30:11   ethernet cables running all over the [TS]

00:30:12   house and Wi-Fi just you know it's user [TS]

00:30:14   friendly technology but what that means [TS]

00:30:15   is it during the setup process most [TS]

00:30:18   electronic devices want to get on the [TS]

00:30:20   network and a lot of them want to get on [TS]

00:30:21   the network early in the setup process [TS]

00:30:23   like not like at the end because they [TS]

00:30:25   didn't work at all if you don't get on [TS]

00:30:27   the network and my problem when it comes [TS]

00:30:29   to all these wireless devices is that i [TS]

00:30:31   do mac address restriction on my [TS]

00:30:32   wireless network maybe I'm crazy do you [TS]

00:30:34   do this stand at your home I too much [TS]

00:30:37   much more diligently I have stopped [TS]

00:30:40   doing it just because the hassle of it [TS]

00:30:42   just think is the hassle yeah now like I [TS]

00:30:44   think every time I run into this think [TS]

00:30:46   like why am i bothering to do mac [TS]

00:30:48   address restriction you know cuz it's [TS]

00:30:49   not like it's one of the security things [TS]

00:30:50   like look if someone can crack my wpa [TS]

00:30:52   two keys or just even just sniffing [TS]

00:30:55   stuff going on they can see the mac [TS]

00:30:56   address as i'm assuming they can see the [TS]

00:30:58   mac address is flying through the [TS]

00:31:00   wireless error on my house and they can [TS]

00:31:02   just take one of them and spoof that mac [TS]

00:31:04   address but my hope still like the [TS]

00:31:05   reason it or enable it is like okay so [TS]

00:31:06   fine they can eventually crack the [TS]

00:31:09   security and see the mac address and [TS]

00:31:10   they can just say okay I'll going to [TS]

00:31:12   make that my mac address I'm assuming if [TS]

00:31:14   they did that it wouldn't be a good [TS]

00:31:17   experience for them because I have a [TS]

00:31:18   device on the network with the same mac [TS]

00:31:20   address and if you have two devices the [TS]

00:31:21   network could say mac address both of [TS]

00:31:22   them are going to get screwed up so the [TS]

00:31:24   only thing it would be good for is sort [TS]

00:31:25   of a denial of service attack on [TS]

00:31:27   whatever a device that they steal the [TS]

00:31:28   mac address so they wouldn't have a good [TS]

00:31:29   experience using my network by spoofing [TS]

00:31:32   a mac address that's also being used by [TS]

00:31:34   an active device on the network so [TS]

00:31:35   that's why I keep it there I think it [TS]

00:31:37   actually is I think it actually is a a [TS]

00:31:40   reasonable way to keep people from [TS]

00:31:42   stealing my wife I basically because [TS]

00:31:44   just because they can grab my mac [TS]

00:31:47   address and use it does not mean that [TS]

00:31:48   they can successfully use my network it [TS]

00:31:50   will be very frustrating for them and [TS]

00:31:51   then we'll stop it you know it would be [TS]

00:31:54   easier for you so I think mac address [TS]

00:31:57   restrictions are still worthwhile maybe [TS]

00:31:59   maybe not that I'm gonna have a lot of [TS]

00:32:00   fall upon the on the next and final [TS]

00:32:02   episode but if someone has some concrete [TS]

00:32:04   reason why mac address restrictions just [TS]

00:32:07   does not help at all I will consider a [TS]

00:32:09   disabling but the point is right now I [TS]

00:32:11   have enable and most the time it's not [TS]

00:32:13   that bad because how many times the new [TS]

00:32:14   devices coming to the house right you [TS]

00:32:16   don't have to deal with that much but [TS]

00:32:19   anyway when I get to that step in any [TS]

00:32:20   setup process where it says okay now [TS]

00:32:22   it's time for you to get on the network [TS]

00:32:23   I need to know the mac address so I can [TS]

00:32:25   go to my little thing and add you know [TS]

00:32:27   add the mac address for the dua so on [TS]

00:32:28   ahead uh and i have yet to see a single [TS]

00:32:31   device that asks for net access really [TS]

00:32:33   early like before the rest of the system [TS]

00:32:34   is set up and you can't get out of it [TS]

00:32:36   like you know it stops you you know you [TS]

00:32:38   can't go to the main menu I've yet to [TS]

00:32:40   see a device that does that and tells [TS]

00:32:42   you or gives you a way to find the mac [TS]

00:32:44   address and i don't understand why they [TS]

00:32:46   wouldn't do this like all you gotta do [TS]

00:32:47   is give me some way to get to a menu [TS]

00:32:49   where i can see the mac address or just [TS]

00:32:50   put it right there on the screen or have [TS]

00:32:52   a button with a little eye on it [TS]

00:32:53   something that lets me see the mac [TS]

00:32:55   address otherwise i'm stuck now i'm sure [TS]

00:32:58   there are devices out there that do this [TS]

00:33:00   just I haven't run across any of them [TS]

00:33:02   and to be fair maybe some devices I have [TS]

00:33:04   do do this but if they have an ethernet [TS]

00:33:06   port adorning bother with the wireless i [TS]

00:33:07   just plug in ethernet so maybe I never [TS]

00:33:09   see that process and the wii u [TS]

00:33:11   supposedly has a USB Ethernet adapter [TS]

00:33:13   but I don't have one I don't have one [TS]

00:33:14   yet maybe I do have one but anyway there [TS]

00:33:17   I am in any DS devices including me you [TS]

00:33:20   stuck at this step cannot proceed with [TS]

00:33:21   this setup process because it's [TS]

00:33:23   I need to get on the network and I can't [TS]

00:33:25   get you in the number because I don't [TS]

00:33:26   know what your mac addresses uh so you [TS]

00:33:29   know worst-case well if I can't continue [TS]

00:33:31   at all what I have to do is just go turn [TS]

00:33:33   off mac address restriction on my [TS]

00:33:34   network and because Apple stupid routers [TS]

00:33:36   offer and require you to reboot every [TS]

00:33:38   time you change any kind of setting than [TS]

00:33:39   a knock everyone off the network and [TS]

00:33:41   people are sad and it's just not a good [TS]

00:33:43   experience but in the case of the wii u [TS]

00:33:45   you know I eventually got past that [TS]

00:33:47   process got it on the network and [TS]

00:33:49   continued found the mac address but the [TS]

00:33:51   restriction back on did all the things [TS]

00:33:52   but that's a bad start for the wii u [TS]

00:33:54   like they're always usually think of [TS]

00:33:55   everything with the setup process I'm [TS]

00:33:56   gonna make this easy as possible and [TS]

00:33:58   here's a case where I feel like it [TS]

00:33:59   wouldn't take that much more effort to [TS]

00:34:01   provide some sort of expert option for [TS]

00:34:03   me to find the mac address and put it on [TS]

00:34:05   the box put it you know cuz I was [TS]

00:34:06   anywhere somewhere that's the kind of [TS]

00:34:08   thing it's like you're saying it's like [TS]

00:34:09   that goes along with that device forever [TS]

00:34:12   it's not like it's not like pro l [TS]

00:34:15   printing it on the box it could chant [TS]

00:34:16   you know I'm saying like it's it's [TS]

00:34:17   pretty much set in stone yeah and this [TS]

00:34:20   is a case where you know being an expert [TS]

00:34:22   user is biting me more like a novices [TS]

00:34:24   would have an easier time they have [TS]

00:34:25   totally unprotected networks and they [TS]

00:34:27   not to worry about any of this right but [TS]

00:34:28   I'm an expert user I know what I know [TS]

00:34:30   what I need to know I know and I know it [TS]

00:34:32   knows the information that I need it [TS]

00:34:34   just won't give it to me because it you [TS]

00:34:37   know it wants to do this friendly setup [TS]

00:34:38   process uh alright so so with the wii u [TS]

00:34:41   i get it on the network the next thing [TS]

00:34:42   wants me to do is set up a user account [TS]

00:34:43   ah and you know I this is a case where [TS]

00:34:48   being an expert user I think kind of [TS]

00:34:50   help but kind of freaked me out a little [TS]

00:34:51   bit because I know about Nintendo's [TS]

00:34:52   crazy drm system that they have or like [TS]

00:34:55   originally would the wii i think i [TS]

00:34:56   mentioned this before with when they [TS]

00:34:58   originally sold the wii they said any [TS]

00:34:59   game that you buy like over the network [TS]

00:35:00   on the we will be tied to that console [TS]

00:35:03   not tied to a user account not tied to [TS]

00:35:06   you as a customer but tied to that piece [TS]

00:35:07   of hardware which seems crazy to me [TS]

00:35:09   because it's like how does that make any [TS]

00:35:11   sense can't you at least tie it to me as [TS]

00:35:13   a person you know as if you got your we [TS]

00:35:14   repaired that have to give you another [TS]

00:35:16   one or only Nintendo can do the super [TS]

00:35:18   secret process that transfers your [TS]

00:35:19   assets the new console and stuff like [TS]

00:35:21   that so I knew going into this thing [TS]

00:35:26   when it maybe wanted me to make a user [TS]

00:35:27   accounts like okay well now they're [TS]

00:35:28   going to type to an account which is [TS]

00:35:29   better but I also knew that I wanted to [TS]

00:35:31   bring over all my user information and [TS]

00:35:33   stuff from the week and I knew it was [TS]

00:35:36   this [TS]

00:35:37   really crazy one time move only process [TS]

00:35:39   for games like you could take things off [TS]

00:35:41   of the wii and put them on the wii u but [TS]

00:35:43   you can only do that one time and they [TS]

00:35:45   were gone from the wii when you did that [TS]

00:35:46   why because thats that crazy drm god [TS]

00:35:48   forbid you have the you know game that [TS]

00:35:50   you bought in two places at once oh no [TS]

00:35:52   what would that mean piracy everywhere [TS]

00:35:54   uh and i believe there is a move still [TS]

00:36:00   not a copy operation but a move [TS]

00:36:01   operation for your game data but but you [TS]

00:36:03   can at least copy the game data pack you [TS]

00:36:05   can't copy the games back ah so I didn't [TS]

00:36:09   want to set up an account because I I [TS]

00:36:11   just wanted all my info from the we on [TS]

00:36:14   here I don't want to make a new person [TS]

00:36:15   with a new me and said all stopped up [TS]

00:36:17   with a new name and stuff like that i [TS]

00:36:18   mislike know I've already got like my [TS]

00:36:20   own me on the wii and I've all the stuff [TS]

00:36:21   uh I want that on to my we already know [TS]

00:36:24   what I want I want the wii stuff on my [TS]

00:36:26   wii u but you have no choice you have to [TS]

00:36:29   all right fine i'll set up but set up a [TS]

00:36:30   thing you know so i can just start using [TS]

00:36:32   but you can't get to the park that lets [TS]

00:36:33   you bring stuff over the wii yet you [TS]

00:36:35   have to set up an account and i was like [TS]

00:36:36   maybe i'll just call this user temp [TS]

00:36:38   right but then I was afraid I'm going to [TS]

00:36:39   be stuck with the username temp if I [TS]

00:36:41   can't delete it you know so I had to [TS]

00:36:44   give it the name John but I'm like well [TS]

00:36:45   what if only allows one user with the [TS]

00:36:47   name John then by can won't be able to [TS]

00:36:48   transfer over my thing like I'm [TS]

00:36:49   second-guessing everything about this [TS]

00:36:51   they know how brain dead their entire [TS]

00:36:52   system is and and the way this should [TS]

00:36:56   work the way this it should actually [TS]

00:36:58   work is when i plug in the wii u it [TS]

00:37:00   should find my we on the network and say [TS]

00:37:03   hey i see you have a weed you want me to [TS]

00:37:05   set this wii u up just like your wii was [TS]

00:37:06   set up right and it could do this like [TS]

00:37:09   it could do this even before it gets the [TS]

00:37:10   network you could do this with like [TS]

00:37:11   local proprietary networking or some [TS]

00:37:13   other things doesn't even require to get [TS]

00:37:14   on the Wi-Fi because Nintendo makes both [TS]

00:37:16   of the boxes I mean they already making [TS]

00:37:17   a proprietary Wi-Fi thing to control [TS]

00:37:19   their gamepad like there's no reason to [TS]

00:37:21   Nintendo boxes sitting next to each [TS]

00:37:23   other both with wireless networking [TS]

00:37:24   cannot find each other without access to [TS]

00:37:27   my network and then it could ask the [TS]

00:37:28   other wii u box of it you know this [TS]

00:37:30   wouldn't help in my case with the mac [TS]

00:37:31   restriction but it should be able to ask [TS]

00:37:32   hey we i know you're on the Wi-Fi [TS]

00:37:34   network can you tell me the setup info [TS]

00:37:36   and which SSID you're connected to and [TS]

00:37:38   what the password like that's how it [TS]

00:37:39   should work it should be like because [TS]

00:37:42   you are a Nintendo household you bring [TS]

00:37:43   in this new thing and it just it sets [TS]

00:37:45   itself up and it should configure [TS]

00:37:46   everything it would still be screwed [TS]

00:37:47   because the mac address restriction you [TS]

00:37:48   know because I'm crazy but [TS]

00:37:50   but that's how it should work there's no [TS]

00:37:52   reason this can't be done and then when [TS]

00:37:54   it finds the way it should copy over all [TS]

00:37:56   my stuff not move it in a destructive [TS]

00:37:58   one time if anything goes wrong during [TS]

00:38:00   this transfer process you're screwed [TS]

00:38:02   type of process that that isn't credible [TS]

00:38:04   you know so it should either be a one [TS]

00:38:05   step or a zero step process depending on [TS]

00:38:07   how crazy your network is but it is not [TS]

00:38:09   so instead this is what I had to do ah [TS]

00:38:12   so again I'm lucky that I read about [TS]

00:38:14   this all over the net before I tried it [TS]

00:38:16   to see what this process was so I was [TS]

00:38:17   prepared so I had that SD card that i [TS]

00:38:19   knew i would need that was not too big [TS]

00:38:20   to be read by the way you a big enough [TS]

00:38:22   to fit all my stuff on and everything ah [TS]

00:38:24   so the first thing you do once you get [TS]

00:38:26   in and it's on your Wi-Fi network and [TS]

00:38:27   you have your account set up or whatever [TS]

00:38:29   uh is to do a system update of course [TS]

00:38:31   you do because every time you buy an [TS]

00:38:33   electronic device now and you plug in [TS]

00:38:34   and immediately needs to have a so do [TS]

00:38:35   assistance actually look I was a little [TS]

00:38:37   surprised by that I guess it's I guess [TS]

00:38:39   it shows me out i'm not a touch i am [TS]

00:38:41   with consoles and stuff because when we [TS]

00:38:43   i have one here too and that was you [TS]

00:38:46   know the first thing that it makes you [TS]

00:38:48   do once they're in the network is the [TS]

00:38:49   system update a and you're saying that [TS]

00:38:50   standard that's a no-no is ever like if [TS]

00:38:52   you get you know an xbox ps3 especially [TS]

00:38:54   on launch especially ones like you know [TS]

00:38:56   launch day of the thing because they [TS]

00:38:58   have to go to manufacturing before the [TS]

00:38:59   software is done to software oh you know [TS]

00:39:01   software is always late right it's [TS]

00:39:02   always more you can do so they go the [TS]

00:39:04   things that they put on the machines in [TS]

00:39:06   the factory that's always like you know [TS]

00:39:08   a month old version of the software or [TS]

00:39:09   whatever and it and if unlaunchable yeah [TS]

00:39:13   and even when even later when you buy [TS]

00:39:14   one off the shelf that may have been [TS]

00:39:16   sitting in the back stock room for a [TS]

00:39:17   couple weeks or a month or whatever and [TS]

00:39:19   there's been a system update since then [TS]

00:39:20   so even if it was the current version [TS]

00:39:21   when it was made in the factory it's not [TS]

00:39:23   anymore so you just expect that uh to [TS]

00:39:26   happen right so i started the system [TS]

00:39:29   update and the little progress bar [TS]

00:39:31   filled in a tiny little bit and i just [TS]

00:39:33   sort of let it sit there and then i came [TS]

00:39:34   back in i noticed the progress bar [TS]

00:39:36   wasn't moving it had moved on like you [TS]

00:39:37   know a couple of millimeters but it was [TS]

00:39:39   not moving over like 15 minutes and I [TS]

00:39:41   start getting paranoid about Wi-Fi [TS]

00:39:42   reception this despite the fact that my [TS]

00:39:44   wii u is on the television entertainment [TS]

00:39:46   center that's only one room away from [TS]

00:39:48   where my actual router is but in line of [TS]

00:39:51   sight between that room and the other is [TS]

00:39:52   a wall and in the middle that wall is my [TS]

00:39:54   gigantic brick chimney so I'm like you [TS]

00:39:56   know and also the Wii U is on the far [TS]

00:39:58   side of my giant metal receiver box [TS]

00:40:00   whereas the wii is on the near side so [TS]

00:40:02   now i have the chimney and this big [TS]

00:40:04   box I'm like maybe he's just not getting [TS]

00:40:05   good Wi-Fi reception from where it is [TS]

00:40:07   and like I really need needs because I [TS]

00:40:09   have the ethernet switch right like two [TS]

00:40:11   feet away just plug it in but I'm like [TS]

00:40:12   oh I'm paranoid about the the wireless [TS]

00:40:15   not working but the progress bar isn't [TS]

00:40:16   moving uh now i had read this story [TS]

00:40:19   about uh poor Ben Kuchera who of the [TS]

00:40:22   penny arcade report who bricked his wii [TS]

00:40:24   u during the system update because they [TS]

00:40:26   give you all these dire warnings during [TS]

00:40:28   the system update do not unplug your [TS]

00:40:30   we'd like you always messaging you [TS]

00:40:32   always breathing like who's gonna unplug [TS]

00:40:34   their thing in the middle of a system [TS]

00:40:35   update who unplugs their things ever [TS]

00:40:36   that's just idiotic right it seems like [TS]

00:40:38   messages for dummies like you know they [TS]

00:40:40   do not eat thing on the silica gel pack [TS]

00:40:42   it inside you come on who's gonna eat [TS]

00:40:44   these right uh but Ben who is not [TS]

00:40:47   unfamiliar with games having been a [TS]

00:40:48   spending his career as a game writer in [TS]

00:40:51   dealing with consoles out the wazoo [TS]

00:40:53   including you know Deb consoles on her [TS]

00:40:55   stuff like that ah you can read the [TS]

00:40:57   story I put in the show notes the [TS]

00:40:59   incredible true story of high brick my [TS]

00:41:00   wii u uh you can see what he did like [TS]

00:41:04   it's not he what he did anyone could do [TS]

00:41:08   it you could forget that what you're [TS]

00:41:09   actually doing is is turning a thing off [TS]

00:41:12   because you know he had i know you read [TS]

00:41:14   about and see how he got himself into a [TS]

00:41:16   situation where wasn't clear to him that [TS]

00:41:18   the update was still going on and it [TS]

00:41:20   wasn't clear to him that he was [TS]

00:41:21   unplugging it and he got into a bad [TS]

00:41:22   situation so i have this bad Wi-Fi [TS]

00:41:25   reception i'm like you know what if i [TS]

00:41:26   could just if I could just get the wii u [TS]

00:41:30   console clear of the big metal receiver [TS]

00:41:32   box maybe you would have a better line [TS]

00:41:33   of sites i know this is not how a [TS]

00:41:35   wireless works please don't write me and [TS]

00:41:36   tell me the Wi-Fi is not lying upside i [TS]

00:41:37   know i know i'm just i'm just thinking [TS]

00:41:39   the progress bar is not moving maybe the [TS]

00:41:41   signal is not as strong in this location [TS]

00:41:43   for whatever reason and maybe if I just [TS]

00:41:44   pull it out of the entertainment center [TS]

00:41:46   who'll be clear but all the while I'm [TS]

00:41:47   pulling this thing Adam like do not [TS]

00:41:49   brick this thing make sure the power [TS]

00:41:51   cable stays in like I'm pulling it [TS]

00:41:52   forward setting up these little wooden [TS]

00:41:54   blocks for it to sit on so it's clear [TS]

00:41:55   and the second I pull it clear of the [TS]

00:41:58   the receiver the progress bar started [TS]

00:42:00   moving and that could have been totally [TS]

00:42:02   unrelated maybe it was just a stall in [TS]

00:42:04   their servers who knows what the heck [TS]

00:42:05   the problem was but yeah but you know I [TS]

00:42:07   I mean if this makes you relax a little [TS]

00:42:10   bit I saw the same exact kind of [TS]

00:42:13   behavior where it was [TS]

00:42:16   it had stopped for quite a long time and [TS]

00:42:19   then would start and I didn't touch [TS]

00:42:21   anything but who who knows yeah you [TS]

00:42:23   can't diagnosable you have the progress [TS]

00:42:25   bar so like I thought maybe wireless was [TS]

00:42:27   a problem and it perhaps fooled me by [TS]

00:42:30   all of a sudden jumping as soon as I [TS]

00:42:31   cleared the thing from and maybe maybe [TS]

00:42:32   the Wi-Fi signal strength was a problem [TS]

00:42:34   so I don't know so I managed to keep the [TS]

00:42:36   power cord in and the progress bar went [TS]

00:42:37   through and a medical assistant up they [TS]

00:42:38   went through of course while it was [TS]

00:42:40   running I was googling around for Wii U [TS]

00:42:42   ethernet adapters which apparently [TS]

00:42:43   exists but or not I found like a third [TS]

00:42:46   party would I'm like how could there be [TS]

00:42:47   a third party USB to ethernet adapter [TS]

00:42:49   for the Wii U but not a first-party one [TS]

00:42:51   so anyway I might still look into that [TS]

00:42:52   alright so next the time to transfer [TS]

00:42:55   stuff for my week because all I've done [TS]

00:42:56   now is have an updated system with the [TS]

00:42:58   user account that I don't want to use I [TS]

00:43:00   want my stuff from my way so you have to [TS]

00:43:02   run this week for a transfer we you [TS]

00:43:04   transfer application which has really [TS]

00:43:05   long very wordy instructions that tries [TS]

00:43:07   to get you prepared for what you're [TS]

00:43:09   going to do which is nice they're trying [TS]

00:43:10   to guide you but bad that they need 17 [TS]

00:43:12   paragraphs of text to explain a process [TS]

00:43:14   that you shouldn't be involved in it [TS]

00:43:15   anyway because Nintendo makes both of [TS]

00:43:17   the boxes up eventually it asks you to [TS]

00:43:20   insert your blank SD card into the wii u [TS]

00:43:22   and then it prepares the card bit of the [TS]

00:43:24   heck that means maybe formats it maybe [TS]

00:43:27   put something on it or whatever and all [TS]

00:43:28   the while it's also communicating with [TS]

00:43:30   the server so this process is going to [TS]

00:43:31   involve the Wii the Wii U and SD card [TS]

00:43:33   and also Nintendo's servers and all [TS]

00:43:35   those things have to work in concert [TS]

00:43:36   with us to be pulled off so it's a lot [TS]

00:43:38   of moving parts here I then you have to [TS]

00:43:40   go on to your we make sure it's got the [TS]

00:43:42   system update then go to the Wii Shop [TS]

00:43:44   Store to download the wii u transfer [TS]

00:43:45   application which is free but you got to [TS]

00:43:47   go through that whole thing and now you [TS]

00:43:49   have the wii u transfer application on [TS]

00:43:50   your way which is confusing because it's [TS]

00:43:52   we you transfer anyway at some point it [TS]

00:43:54   wants you to take the SD card out of the [TS]

00:43:56   wii u and put it into the wii but it [TS]

00:43:58   does not make it very clear when it's [TS]

00:43:59   when you're supposed to do that like it [TS]

00:44:02   should say it should have like you neyo [TS]

00:44:03   next next term you do each step it [TS]

00:44:05   should have a thing that says you hit [TS]

00:44:06   next and it says okay now please take [TS]

00:44:08   the thing out but it doesn't it just [TS]

00:44:09   leaves you at the end of the current [TS]

00:44:10   instructions and you're like I guess I [TS]

00:44:12   take it out now like because the the wee [TS]

00:44:14   one says please insert the SD card so I [TS]

00:44:16   guess I'll take as soon as you take it [TS]

00:44:17   out of the wii u the screen changes to [TS]

00:44:18   confirm that what you did was the [TS]

00:44:19   correct thing but i was so paranoid [TS]

00:44:21   about screwing this thing up that it was [TS]

00:44:22   not clear to me that was going on and i [TS]

00:44:24   read those instructions and I read [TS]

00:44:26   online and I read the instruction [TS]

00:44:27   manuals I read [TS]

00:44:28   everything I'm making sure that I'm [TS]

00:44:29   doing the right thing but it was you [TS]

00:44:30   know I didn't make any mistakes but it [TS]

00:44:33   was not for all the texts they provided [TS]

00:44:35   it was not as clear to me that what I [TS]

00:44:36   was doing was the right thing even [TS]

00:44:37   though it was so you put the SD card [TS]

00:44:39   into the wii and a copy stuff onto it [TS]

00:44:41   there's a cute little Pikmin animation [TS]

00:44:43   that runs uh but unfortunately nothing [TS]

00:44:46   can hide the fact that this copy process [TS]

00:44:47   takes forever and I don't know why is it [TS]

00:44:49   because the SD card is slow is because [TS]

00:44:51   there's lots of data is because it's [TS]

00:44:52   communicating with a server in between [TS]

00:44:53   doing each move who knows why but it [TS]

00:44:55   takes way too long to do this and [TS]

00:44:57   finally you take the SD card out of the [TS]

00:45:00   we put it back into the wii u oh and by [TS]

00:45:03   the way when you're doing this that [TS]

00:45:04   means of course you have to have both [TS]

00:45:05   the wii and the way you don't have to be [TS]

00:45:06   on at the same time you can do it so you [TS]

00:45:08   turn what off on the other but it's you [TS]

00:45:09   know again i want to keep them both on [TS]

00:45:10   because i was paranoid so that means you [TS]

00:45:12   have to be controlling both the wii in [TS]

00:45:13   the wii u at the same time so you have [TS]

00:45:15   to make sure that you didn't repair all [TS]

00:45:17   your wiimotes with one or the other [TS]

00:45:18   let's not show you enjoy the whole [TS]

00:45:21   remote sharing thing alright so you put [TS]

00:45:23   the SD card back from your way into your [TS]

00:45:25   wii u and you see more pigment [TS]

00:45:27   animations and a more really really long [TS]

00:45:28   wait and at the end of that process all [TS]

00:45:31   of your wiiware games and all the things [TS]

00:45:33   that you bought on your we are now only [TS]

00:45:35   on your wii u and even though I knew [TS]

00:45:38   this was gonna happen during the cottage [TS]

00:45:40   how did you know that was gonna happen [TS]

00:45:41   well because I'd read every article [TS]

00:45:43   about I mean it research ahead of time [TS]

00:45:45   like the hell is the regular consumer [TS]

00:45:47   would would have been too what does it [TS]

00:45:49   tell you the process or what it [TS]

00:45:51   emphasizes in the process that it's [TS]

00:45:53   gonna be a moves not a copy like it [TS]

00:45:54   tells you many many times but you it's [TS]

00:45:56   kind of like the shrink wrap stuff on [TS]

00:45:57   software how many people are actually [TS]

00:45:58   gonna read that like they tell you many [TS]

00:46:00   many times keep in mind you know a if [TS]

00:46:02   this screws up your screw they kind of [TS]

00:46:03   say that and be this stuff will be gone [TS]

00:46:05   from your wii and will only be on your [TS]

00:46:07   wii u and even though i knew that you [TS]

00:46:09   know intellectually when it was copying [TS]

00:46:11   us it wait a second you know what that [TS]

00:46:12   means that i won't be able to play mario [TS]

00:46:14   64 with a gamecube controller anymore [TS]

00:46:16   because my way is the good one that has [TS]

00:46:18   the Gamecube compatibility and I like [TS]

00:46:20   playing the mario 64 with my gamecube [TS]

00:46:22   controller can't do that anymore because [TS]

00:46:25   now Mary 64 is only on the Wii U and the [TS]

00:46:27   Wii U has no way from you use a gamecube [TS]

00:46:28   patrol and I don't have a pro controller [TS]

00:46:30   I don't think you're gonna like it [TS]

00:46:31   better than the gamecube controller [TS]

00:46:32   anyway ah so that was sad but my [TS]

00:46:35   solution was just to brute force and say [TS]

00:46:38   fine i will just repurchase mario 64 on [TS]

00:46:40   the wii so i can play with the gamecube [TS]

00:46:41   so that's what I did I'm trying to stop [TS]

00:46:44   doing that for every game I like to play [TS]

00:46:45   with the gamecube controller but i gotta [TS]

00:46:47   keep mary 64 around it's a favorite so [TS]

00:46:51   after that was done the next thing i did [TS]

00:46:52   was i tried Skyward Sword on the wii u [TS]

00:46:57   because i wanted my son was in the [TS]

00:46:58   middle of one of his i think a second [TS]

00:47:00   playthrough of Skyward Sword I wanted to [TS]

00:47:02   see can we just like not use the wii any [TS]

00:47:04   more like basically pretend that we as a [TS]

00:47:05   gamecube pretending that wii u is both a [TS]

00:47:07   way in a way you can we stop using that [TS]

00:47:09   for wii games so that i compare all my [TS]

00:47:11   remotes with the wii u and only leave [TS]

00:47:14   the the wii for gamecube stuff and this [TS]

00:47:17   gets into something we talked about in [TS]

00:47:19   the television episode so you run the [TS]

00:47:22   wii application on the wii u and it [TS]

00:47:23   turns the wii u into a week oh god this [TS]

00:47:26   this this sounds like the other foreign [TS]

00:47:28   language or nonsense words with all this [TS]

00:47:30   wii u wii stuff and you launch the game [TS]

00:47:33   but it shows skyward sword with a with a [TS]

00:47:37   black border around the entire screen [TS]

00:47:39   top bottom left and right like it [TS]

00:47:41   doesn't fill the entire screen and i [TS]

00:47:43   realized the reason it's doing this is [TS]

00:47:45   because i have my HDTV set to i don't [TS]

00:47:49   know what you would call this like the [TS]

00:47:51   correct native resolution like you know [TS]

00:47:53   HDTV has a certain resolution whatever [TS]

00:47:54   it is 1080 x whatever the other [TS]

00:47:56   resolution that i can never remember is [TS]

00:47:57   that's how many pixels are you know [TS]

00:47:59   picture elements are in the image but [TS]

00:48:02   most hdtvs comes set up so that actually [TS]

00:48:06   what you're seeing is like it chops off [TS]

00:48:08   the top bottom left and right borders [TS]

00:48:10   like a top saw chops off a margin of the [TS]

00:48:12   image and zooms the rest of the image up [TS]

00:48:13   a little bit i don't know why they do [TS]

00:48:16   that well actually i dunno why do I they [TS]

00:48:17   do that because the legacy of crts is [TS]

00:48:19   that CRT's used to not be able to show [TS]

00:48:22   that the picture around the edge or [TS]

00:48:24   cathode ray tube was distorted and bad [TS]

00:48:26   and so they would build television sets [TS]

00:48:30   with a little plastic rim around the [TS]

00:48:33   edge that would prevent you from even [TS]

00:48:35   seeing you remember when you had a TV [TS]

00:48:37   set like that it was like a tube shaped [TS]

00:48:38   thing and it wasn't a rectangle it was [TS]

00:48:40   kind of like a rounded rectangular [TS]

00:48:41   bulges yeah you know because the plastic [TS]

00:48:45   bezel was covering all that stuff up [TS]

00:48:46   like and so literally was not a [TS]

00:48:48   rectangle it was his weird rounded shape [TS]

00:48:50   there was sometimes picture being shown [TS]

00:48:52   underneath them but you couldn't see it [TS]

00:48:53   because it was you know covered up by [TS]

00:48:54   the [TS]

00:48:54   plastic bit as televisions eventually [TS]

00:48:56   became actual rectangles they continue [TS]

00:48:58   this practice I think they called that [TS]

00:48:59   was like the title safe area maybe we [TS]

00:49:01   think something else but they were [TS]

00:49:02   basically your television signal back in [TS]

00:49:04   the CRT days they would always hide the [TS]

00:49:06   edges of the screen because they assumed [TS]

00:49:07   that would look crappy eventually [TS]

00:49:09   display technology advanced to the point [TS]

00:49:10   where display technology was good enough [TS]

00:49:13   that the image on the edge of the screen [TS]

00:49:14   was just fine and then all you're doing [TS]

00:49:16   is losing information and scaling things [TS]

00:49:18   up and making them ugly so when the wii [TS]

00:49:23   u sends out the signal for a wii game [TS]

00:49:25   over its hdmi cable it sends it out just [TS]

00:49:28   as that little inset image assuming that [TS]

00:49:30   the television set is going to take that [TS]

00:49:32   image and zoom it so that those black [TS]

00:49:33   borders disappear and the actual an [TS]

00:49:35   image part of the image just touches the [TS]

00:49:36   edges of the screens ah but i don't want [TS]

00:49:39   that i don't want the black border [TS]

00:49:40   around it i mean for burnin purposes [TS]

00:49:42   alone like why would i want that why [TS]

00:49:43   wouldn't i want to fill my screen just [TS]

00:49:44   fill my screen up with it now when i'm [TS]

00:49:46   running it on the way i have it [TS]

00:49:47   connected with component video and it's [TS]

00:49:48   an analog output and that does fill the [TS]

00:49:50   screen so this upset me because like my [TS]

00:49:55   television has a setting that can change [TS]

00:49:56   it they be mine on Panasonic's they call [TS]

00:49:58   it size one and size to size two is like [TS]

00:50:00   the correct size but you get to see [TS]

00:50:02   every single pixel the video signal that [TS]

00:50:03   you're paying for and size one says [TS]

00:50:05   throw out the top bottom left and right [TS]

00:50:07   sides and zoom the screen slightly [TS]

00:50:08   making everything blurry so that's why I [TS]

00:50:10   have my television always said to size 2 [TS]

00:50:11   and all my input but with this setup [TS]

00:50:13   what I would have to do every time my [TS]

00:50:14   son wanted to play Skyward Sword is [TS]

00:50:16   trained him to ensure that he does go to [TS]

00:50:19   the stupid television menu with these [TS]

00:50:21   super advanced picture settings which [TS]

00:50:23   like nine menus and change the thing [TS]

00:50:25   from size to back to size one right but [TS]

00:50:27   only when he's playing the wii games cuz [TS]

00:50:28   when you come back come play the wii u [TS]

00:50:29   games you gotta change it to size two [TS]

00:50:31   and you can't do different inputs [TS]

00:50:32   because you know it's all the same but [TS]

00:50:34   it's all the wii u so Skyward Sword on [TS]

00:50:36   the wii u out the window that still has [TS]

00:50:38   to also be played on the wii which means [TS]

00:50:39   i have to keep at least one motion [TS]

00:50:40   control remote tied to the wii to play [TS]

00:50:43   the wii games that was kind of [TS]

00:50:44   disappointing because i was hoping I [TS]

00:50:45   could you know retire the wii for [TS]

00:50:47   everything except for gamecube games but [TS]

00:50:48   that is not possible so i also copied [TS]

00:50:51   all of my save game data back to the way [TS]

00:50:53   again why does it move it when it could [TS]

00:50:55   copy it it just does the game data games [TS]

00:50:58   save data can be moved back to the way [TS]

00:51:00   so you can have your Skyward Sword save [TS]

00:51:01   games back over there so we can play it [TS]

00:51:03   successfully you can't transfer back [TS]

00:51:05   save data for any game that has a [TS]

00:51:06   network component [TS]

00:51:07   I think like mario kart wii where you [TS]

00:51:09   can play people over the network because [TS]

00:51:11   i don't know they tie that to your [TS]

00:51:12   network ID or some stuff like that you [TS]

00:51:14   can't transfer that back so some games [TS]

00:51:16   some wii games i can now only play in [TS]

00:51:18   the wii u 0 give a thumbs down to that [TS]

00:51:20   alright so finally now I've got [TS]

00:51:23   everything over there including my meez [TS]

00:51:24   and everything I finally create a new [TS]

00:51:26   user account associated with the me that [TS]

00:51:29   I transferred from my wii because we [TS]

00:51:31   have Me's for the whole family over [TS]

00:51:32   there apparently i couldn't just [TS]

00:51:34   reassign the me of the original user i [TS]

00:51:36   made i pretty sure i tried that it [TS]

00:51:37   didn't take good notes on it but like I [TS]

00:51:39   didn't want to assume that all I can [TS]

00:51:41   make a temporary user and then just [TS]

00:51:42   change the me associated with it and I [TS]

00:51:43   believe it's actually not the case and [TS]

00:51:44   like my paranoia would paid off there i [TS]

00:51:46   made a new user gave it my actual name [TS]

00:51:48   associated with my actual me and after [TS]

00:51:51   me the new user allowed me to leave [TS]

00:51:52   delete the old user so good so far then [TS]

00:51:56   I had to make a Nintendo network ID and [TS]

00:51:58   I had no idea what the hell that is so [TS]

00:52:01   back to the manual back to Google what [TS]

00:52:03   the hell is an attender no cry do you [TS]

00:52:04   know what is this thing they give no [TS]

00:52:06   good explanation for it in tendo's own [TS]

00:52:08   website like has very bad information [TS]

00:52:11   they try to explain it like friendly [TS]

00:52:12   turn since like no explain to me in [TS]

00:52:14   technical terms what does this mean [TS]

00:52:15   right so I hadn't you'd enter an email [TS]

00:52:18   address a username and by the way every [TS]

00:52:19   time they want you to enter username it [TS]

00:52:21   says please enter username and make sure [TS]

00:52:22   you don't use any personally [TS]

00:52:24   identifiable information and of course [TS]

00:52:26   my username I always use like on Twitter [TS]

00:52:27   and everything is my last name right and [TS]

00:52:29   so it's like it is that like forbidden [TS]

00:52:31   do they not want me to use my last name [TS]

00:52:33   is my username do I have to make up [TS]

00:52:35   something I guess it's like to protect [TS]

00:52:37   kids so you know nothing to get on your [TS]

00:52:39   yeah cuz I like if you're if you're [TS]

00:52:40   grown up and you're John siracusa like [TS]

00:52:43   who cares you know what I mean like oh [TS]

00:52:45   it that's John sirak used to running [TS]

00:52:47   around but I think I think you're like a [TS]

00:52:48   little kid it'll raise that not like so [TS]

00:52:52   much like a suggestion but like it was a [TS]

00:52:53   requirement so I was afraid I think I [TS]

00:52:55   ended up just using Syracuse I actually [TS]

00:52:56   forget what i pyxeas I don't think this [TS]

00:52:58   name comes up a much in there but that I [TS]

00:53:01   don't I mean because every what are you [TS]

00:53:03   gonna pick like you know uh duty head 65 [TS]

00:53:06   like you back I gotta pick something it [TS]

00:53:08   doesn't have any personally identifying [TS]

00:53:10   information not based on any of my [TS]

00:53:11   name's or any where I live or anything [TS]

00:53:13   like that so I guess people probably [TS]

00:53:15   just picking their their names were just [TS]

00:53:16   fine uh then I wanted to add users for [TS]

00:53:21   and [TS]

00:53:21   network ID you know I mean I understand [TS]

00:53:24   that you need to use it to play online [TS]

00:53:25   games and stuff like that my questions [TS]

00:53:27   about it were not like what is an [TS]

00:53:28   attendant at work addy but like how does [TS]

00:53:29   it manifest itself in the rest of the [TS]

00:53:31   system so when I went to add users for [TS]

00:53:33   the rest of my family you know both my [TS]

00:53:35   kids in my wife because we have the [TS]

00:53:36   little me set up my choices were and [TS]

00:53:39   this is from memory i think this is the [TS]

00:53:40   wording it was like add a new user and [TS]

00:53:43   it says for first time users or [TS]

00:53:44   something like that and the other choice [TS]

00:53:46   was add to an existing nintendo network [TS]

00:53:48   ID and I didn't know what to choose or [TS]

00:53:51   what the implications were despite [TS]

00:53:52   reading the manual reading all the stuff [TS]

00:53:53   like would I have to log out every time [TS]

00:53:55   my son wanted to play if I made a [TS]

00:53:57   separate account from him would separate [TS]

00:53:59   accounts not share saved a their [TS]

00:54:01   unlockables like uh you know on the wii [TS]

00:54:03   and on like all pastel de games and [TS]

00:54:05   stuff like that when you play the game [TS]

00:54:06   there's like three or five saved game [TS]

00:54:08   slots so like one game could be yours [TS]

00:54:09   the one game could be your son's right [TS]

00:54:11   and that's all the same slots you get [TS]

00:54:12   with those save slots be a new set of [TS]

00:54:14   save slots through him if we use [TS]

00:54:15   different network IDs or where they you [TS]

00:54:16   know if we if I want to play part of the [TS]

00:54:18   game and unlock things so that he can [TS]

00:54:20   play them like if I wanna unlock boards [TS]

00:54:21   on you know we you married kart game and [TS]

00:54:24   I want my son to see them do we have to [TS]

00:54:25   share the same account is it even [TS]

00:54:27   possible to use a single Nintendo [TS]

00:54:28   network ID with multiple like we me [TS]

00:54:31   account things on here would we share [TS]

00:54:34   funds when i buy things or get a gift [TS]

00:54:35   certificate but he not be able to see [TS]

00:54:37   them with my son Nina's on credit card [TS]

00:54:39   or his own email and like this is what I [TS]

00:54:40   want to know what are the implications [TS]

00:54:42   of this thing is it like a Mac os10 user [TS]

00:54:43   account is it like Netflix where you can [TS]

00:54:46   have one account but everybody different [TS]

00:54:48   people can put things on a cure you can [TS]

00:54:49   have separate queues for that's what you [TS]

00:54:52   know maybe regular people don't care and [TS]

00:54:53   they just do whatever they want but I [TS]

00:54:54   didn't know what the right choice was I [TS]

00:54:56   kept reading it from what I can tell if [TS]

00:54:58   I had selected add to an existing [TS]

00:54:59   Nintendo network ID I would have [TS]

00:55:01   disassociated that network ID with the [TS]

00:55:03   me that represented me and associated it [TS]

00:55:05   with a new one that's I didn't try it [TS]

00:55:07   but that's as far as I understand i [TS]

00:55:08   think that's what would happen uh very [TS]

00:55:10   confusing maybe more confusing to nerds [TS]

00:55:12   than regular people who wouldn't think [TS]

00:55:13   about this but I'm immediately thinking [TS]

00:55:15   about what the implications of this [TS]

00:55:16   choice are or how it works and the [TS]

00:55:18   wording does not make it clear nor does [TS]

00:55:19   any of the helpdesk text and i even [TS]

00:55:21   googled then you saw a couple people [TS]

00:55:22   asking the same question but no good [TS]

00:55:24   answers because I guess the console is [TS]

00:55:26   too new all right so eventually i just [TS]

00:55:29   decided look I'm going to make separate [TS]

00:55:30   Nintendo network IDs for everyone so I [TS]

00:55:33   had to make a username for everyone and [TS]

00:55:34   for Mike [TS]

00:55:35   I didn't want any personally [TS]

00:55:36   identifiable information so it couldn't [TS]

00:55:37   contain the first or last name or [TS]

00:55:38   anything about them so I had to make up [TS]

00:55:39   names for them which I got they don't [TS]

00:55:42   even know what those names are because I [TS]

00:55:43   don't think they would like them but [TS]

00:55:44   tough luck kids uh and a password for [TS]

00:55:47   each person and I have to remember their [TS]

00:55:49   passwords right because you know they're [TS]

00:55:51   not gonna remember their passwords right [TS]

00:55:53   and when I set up my wife's account [TS]

00:55:54   which was second one did I had to set up [TS]

00:55:55   an email for our we just find she's got [TS]

00:55:57   an email but when I did the kids I'm [TS]

00:55:58   like well kids don't have email [TS]

00:55:59   addresses because I too young yet well [TS]

00:56:02   they can't they kind of do but they [TS]

00:56:03   don't actually know about them or use [TS]

00:56:04   them uh and they don't have credit cards [TS]

00:56:07   obviously right but what the first time [TS]

00:56:09   I set up an account because it asks for [TS]

00:56:10   your birth date when you're setting mine [TS]

00:56:12   account if you pick a birth date and [TS]

00:56:13   they determined that's a child based on [TS]

00:56:15   the birthday you then have to prove that [TS]

00:56:17   you're an adult setting it up and they [TS]

00:56:19   do that by charging you fifty cents on [TS]

00:56:21   your credit card like non-refundable [TS]

00:56:22   which is fine whatever that's your way [TS]

00:56:24   in doing you just have to do it one time [TS]

00:56:26   not once for each kid once you've proved [TS]

00:56:28   that you're an adult setting up the [TS]

00:56:29   thing it says fine ah it's very weird [TS]

00:56:32   and very non obvious but I think all [TS]

00:56:35   this stuff supports the idea that I made [TS]

00:56:36   the right choice because by making a [TS]

00:56:38   separate Nintendo network ID for them [TS]

00:56:39   it's clear that they don't expect [TS]

00:56:41   everyone to tender network at eight to [TS]

00:56:42   be an adult that it's clear that they [TS]

00:56:44   might be a kid and you just have to [TS]

00:56:45   prove as their parent regarding that [TS]

00:56:47   you're allowing this to happen and they [TS]

00:56:49   don't ask for an email for the kid they [TS]

00:56:51   don't require the kid accounts that have [TS]

00:56:53   a credit card I still don't quite [TS]

00:56:54   understand what this means about you [TS]

00:56:56   know especially the point in the set up [TS]

00:56:57   process say I login is me and buy a game [TS]

00:57:00   and the you know downloadable game did [TS]

00:57:03   they see it when they log in as them [TS]

00:57:04   like even though I bought it with my [TS]

00:57:06   network ID and password can they play it [TS]

00:57:09   like all these questions are not [TS]

00:57:10   answered i'm assuming the answer she'll [TS]

00:57:12   be fine but it's the uncertainty that [TS]

00:57:13   bothers me all right so i got everyone's [TS]

00:57:16   account set up and finally I said okay [TS]

00:57:19   now wait now let me look at all the non [TS]

00:57:21   game stuff hadn't started any game discs [TS]

00:57:23   finally the system is updated the [TS]

00:57:25   accounts are created the data is [TS]

00:57:26   transferred let me look at all this [TS]

00:57:27   other stuff that's there you know then [TS]

00:57:29   let me look at the netflix app let me [TS]

00:57:30   look at their TV control thing let me [TS]

00:57:32   get everything set up every time I [TS]

00:57:34   launch one of those things the [TS]

00:57:36   individual applications also want to [TS]

00:57:37   download an update Michael what the hell [TS]

00:57:39   are you doing when you're doing a system [TS]

00:57:40   update if you weren't updating like the [TS]

00:57:41   netflix app and all the other stuff [TS]

00:57:42   isn't that part of the system software [TS]

00:57:44   so each one of those icons that I tapped [TS]

00:57:46   on I was like up sorry you can't launch [TS]

00:57:47   it I have to download [TS]

00:57:48   update and then I go do something else [TS]

00:57:49   uh the total time it took me to get the [TS]

00:57:53   system from out of the box well I'm not [TS]

00:57:55   ignoring the connecting to television to [TS]

00:57:56   get from like all rights all connect to [TS]

00:57:57   the television everything is set up [TS]

00:57:59   start the clock now you're turning [TS]

00:58:00   system on for the first time right five [TS]

00:58:03   hour from 8pm to 1am five hours to set [TS]

00:58:08   this thing and I'm not let's not like [TS]

00:58:09   I'm doing crazy stuff here all I wanted [TS]

00:58:11   was like make it like my we was with the [TS]

00:58:12   counts for everybody no games played [TS]

00:58:14   nothing installed like just bare bones [TS]

00:58:16   and transfer the stuff from the week [TS]

00:58:18   that is not a good first launch [TS]

00:58:20   experience no I can set up a mac pro [TS]

00:58:23   computer from being in the box and [TS]

00:58:25   considerably less time that it took me [TS]

00:58:27   to set this stupid thing I but a lot it [TS]

00:58:28   to be fair a lot of that time was [TS]

00:58:29   waiting for the stupid downloads to go [TS]

00:58:31   and maybe it's because their servers [TS]

00:58:32   were slow or you know my wife I say it [TS]

00:58:34   was bad but this is not it's not a good [TS]

00:58:37   experience did you do have you said you [TS]

00:58:39   have one and you set it up by assume [TS]

00:58:40   your experience was not five hours in [TS]

00:58:42   college because you're not as obsessed [TS]

00:58:43   as I am making it look having these [TS]

00:58:45   where all your family and making it look [TS]

00:58:46   like your we know I mean we I have a wii [TS]

00:58:49   but that's at home and I set this up at [TS]

00:58:51   here at the the world headquarters five [TS]

00:58:53   by five world headquarters so I was not [TS]

00:58:55   concerned at all about migrating [TS]

00:58:57   anything I had what could be described [TS]

00:59:01   as essentially a vanilla install kind of [TS]

00:59:04   experience where I set it up plugged it [TS]

00:59:07   in and let it do its thing downloading [TS]

00:59:10   and I think it yeah the download itself [TS]

00:59:14   of the update was the long part and I [TS]

00:59:16   think that probably took an hour so for [TS]

00:59:18   me it was more like a 90 maybe 120 [TS]

00:59:21   minute kind of thing but still it was [TS]

00:59:25   still a long time did you launch any [TS]

00:59:27   other apps did you look at the netflix [TS]

00:59:28   client or the hulu client or the amazon [TS]

00:59:30   video like all the did you launch each [TS]

00:59:32   one of those because each one those also [TS]

00:59:33   triggered and download yeah for me i did [TS]

00:59:36   and i saw at this all my guests at 120 [TS]

00:59:39   minutes would include the you know like [TS]

00:59:42   that little like then how is the weird [TS]

00:59:43   thing is like you're saying it's like [TS]

00:59:45   you launch something and you think it's [TS]

00:59:46   just going to be there but no then that [TS]

00:59:47   has to do it but those were much shorter [TS]

00:59:49   those are like more like a five or ten [TS]

00:59:51   minute yeah although each other like for [TS]

00:59:53   the netflix one you had to go to the [TS]

00:59:54   netflix website and type in this code or [TS]

00:59:56   go to this URL to confirm these device [TS]

00:59:58   to be able to you know it's like [TS]

00:59:58   to be able to you know it's like [TS]

01:00:00   just interminable setup and in all cases [TS]

01:00:01   I feel like you know because all this [TS]

01:00:04   stuff came out of the box it's not [TS]

01:00:05   third-party that the nintendo stuff [TS]

01:00:07   should be able to set this absolves you [TS]

01:00:09   know this is not Nintendo strength [TS]

01:00:10   system software is not their strength [TS]

01:00:12   traditionally they didn't have any [TS]

01:00:13   system software you shoved in a [TS]

01:00:14   cartridge in your nes turn it on the [TS]

01:00:16   game took over that was it there's you [TS]

01:00:17   know and as that becomes less and less [TS]

01:00:20   the case an intent was weakness and [TS]

01:00:22   system software is becoming apparent all [TS]

01:00:25   right so you want to do on the sponsor [TS]

01:00:27   before I continue with us because [TS]

01:00:28   there's so much more there is more okay [TS]

01:00:29   shutterstock.com you'll find over 20 [TS]

01:00:31   million stock photos vectors [TS]

01:00:33   illustrations video clips start your [TS]

01:00:36   search at shutters calm and you will [TS]

01:00:38   find the perfect image or video I mean [TS]

01:00:41   whatever it is that you're looking for [TS]

01:00:42   if you have an ad that you're working on [TS]

01:00:44   maybe you're just doing a blog post and [TS]

01:00:46   you want to do Christmas blog post and [TS]

01:00:47   you want to have a little little festive [TS]

01:00:49   image up there I mean where you going to [TS]

01:00:50   find this stuff legit you get you get to [TS]

01:00:52   get it from somewhere and they're going [TS]

01:00:53   to have it you can do image packs he [TS]

01:00:55   could do monthly subscription packages [TS]

01:00:56   whatever you just choose whatever you [TS]

01:00:58   need you know have to compromise it's [TS]

01:01:00   more affordable than you think because [TS]

01:01:01   they don't charge for the extra large [TS]

01:01:03   sized files they don't nickel and dime [TS]

01:01:06   you that way then you just download any [TS]

01:01:07   image and any size and you pay only one [TS]

01:01:09   price you can sign up for a free browse [TS]

01:01:12   account you can look around you can put [TS]

01:01:14   together these things that are called [TS]

01:01:15   like boxes which are very cool cool ways [TS]

01:01:18   to organize the different images that [TS]

01:01:20   you find that you can share those so if [TS]

01:01:21   you're collaborating working with other [TS]

01:01:22   people you can share them you can make [TS]

01:01:25   them public just go to shutterstock.com [TS]

01:01:27   no credit card or anything like that and [TS]

01:01:30   if you find an image that you want to [TS]

01:01:31   purchase or a pack of images or a [TS]

01:01:33   monthly subscription you just use the [TS]

01:01:35   code dan sent me 12 dan sent me 12 and [TS]

01:01:38   you'll get thirty percent off any [TS]

01:01:40   package go check it out shutterstock.com [TS]

01:01:44   alright so the setup process or clear of [TS]

01:01:51   that now and really it is a one-time [TS]

01:01:53   thing and maybe you know it's like well [TS]

01:01:54   fine whatever its pain in the butt to do [TS]

01:01:56   but everything went fine and you got [TS]

01:01:58   through it and you won't have to do it [TS]

01:01:59   again it's still black mark I'll briefly [TS]

01:02:03   about the console itself which really is [TS]

01:02:05   not you know I mean the actual thing [TS]

01:02:07   that you stick the disc into right [TS]

01:02:09   that's not a big deal sis on your TV [TS]

01:02:11   whatever it's a little bit bigger than [TS]

01:02:12   the wii console [TS]

01:02:13   curved on the sides and stuff the noise [TS]

01:02:15   level seems i'm gonna say lower than the [TS]

01:02:18   wii if it's not lower by like measuring [TS]

01:02:21   in decibels at least it's a nicer sound [TS]

01:02:23   kind of in the philosophy of apples [TS]

01:02:25   thing with their asymmetrical fans where [TS]

01:02:27   if it's going to be just as loud just [TS]

01:02:28   make it like less irritating it's almost [TS]

01:02:30   as if it has a larger diameter fan [TS]

01:02:32   that's going at lower RPM I don't know [TS]

01:02:34   if that's actually the case but that's [TS]

01:02:35   the quality of the sound it's like less [TS]

01:02:37   high pitched whiny and obnoxious and [TS]

01:02:40   that that's a trend because I've got a [TS]

01:02:42   gamecube a wii and wii u all connected [TS]

01:02:44   to my TV and the gamecube is the most [TS]

01:02:46   sort of kissing and annoying and the wii [TS]

01:02:48   is a little bit better and the wii u is [TS]

01:02:50   better still so thumbs up on that i [TS]

01:02:51   would like it if it was even quieter but [TS]

01:02:53   at least we're making at least we're [TS]

01:02:54   going in the right direction right the [TS]

01:02:57   recess sync button in the front is a [TS]

01:02:58   little bit hard to press if you don't [TS]

01:02:59   have good finger nails and even if you [TS]

01:03:02   do kind of feeling around trying to [TS]

01:03:03   press it in there that's only a problem [TS]

01:03:06   if you know how often do you think we [TS]

01:03:08   remotes but now that I have two devices [TS]

01:03:09   that want to share and fight over the [TS]

01:03:11   wii remotes and i don't have enough to [TS]

01:03:12   put four in each one right i am now [TS]

01:03:15   opening the stupid battery doors and [TS]

01:03:17   taking off the wii remote condom opening [TS]

01:03:19   the battery door person that little red [TS]

01:03:20   button and going up to the TV pushing [TS]

01:03:22   the red button on a little thing that is [TS]

01:03:24   not a fun or good process for you know [TS]

01:03:27   the sinking works fine but it's a pain [TS]

01:03:29   to resync things from one to the other [TS]

01:03:30   and it's difficult for the kids to do [TS]

01:03:31   when they get frustrated if they don't [TS]

01:03:32   do it right and yeah but that's all i [TS]

01:03:36   have to say about the console itself [TS]

01:03:37   it's mostly non issue with the slot [TS]

01:03:38   loading drive is nice and sturdy it does [TS]

01:03:41   not feel cheap unlike the new super slim [TS]

01:03:45   ps3 with a sliding door and just shove [TS]

01:03:47   the disc in there that looks and feels [TS]

01:03:48   cheap this feels nice and expensive so [TS]

01:03:52   the gamepad controller now that I [TS]

01:03:54   finally got one of these in my hands [TS]

01:03:55   actually brought it and it's sitting on [TS]

01:03:56   the desk next to me in case I need to [TS]

01:03:57   refer to it and or fondle it while [TS]

01:03:59   speaking although i'm not going to turn [TS]

01:04:01   turn it on to the screen in the middle [TS]

01:04:05   of the thing the viewing angle is not up [TS]

01:04:08   to the standards set by the best iOS [TS]

01:04:10   devices i guess that's to be expected [TS]

01:04:11   like cuz those are I OS devices cost a [TS]

01:04:14   lot of money and there you know it's a [TS]

01:04:15   basically a big battery in a screen and [TS]

01:04:17   a little tiny printed circuit board so [TS]

01:04:19   yeah this is not forget about retina [TS]

01:04:21   just in terms of color saturation and [TS]

01:04:23   viewing angle this is not up to the [TS]

01:04:24   standards of of even an iPod [TS]

01:04:27   sure certainly not an iPad screen which [TS]

01:04:28   is fine i understand it has to be cheap [TS]

01:04:30   and whatever but like i don't know what [TS]

01:04:33   i've paid fifty dollars more for a [TS]

01:04:35   better screen maybe maybe not maybe [TS]

01:04:37   they'll actually improve the screens [TS]

01:04:39   like years later in newer versions the [TS]

01:04:41   touch the screen is touchscreen is [TS]

01:04:43   pressure sensitive not capacitive i use [TS]

01:04:47   palm devices for years so I was kind of [TS]

01:04:48   used to pressure sensitive touch uh but [TS]

01:04:51   of course then I always came along and I [TS]

01:04:53   got used to capacitive touch yeah for [TS]

01:04:57   people who don't know capacitive touch [TS]

01:04:58   like you don't actually have to press on [TS]

01:04:59   the glass it doesn't doesn't sense how [TS]

01:05:01   hard you press so please stop pressing [TS]

01:05:03   really hard on your iPad's because it [TS]

01:05:04   makes me cringe but pressure sensitive [TS]

01:05:06   touch you actually have to press with a [TS]

01:05:08   certain amount of force and the screen [TS]

01:05:09   deflects not a lot but it deflects and [TS]

01:05:11   that's how it senses that you're [TS]

01:05:13   touching it but now going back to using [TS]

01:05:15   a touchscreen after using capacitive [TS]

01:05:17   touch is really weird feeling like an [TS]

01:05:20   early example or in the setup process [TS]

01:05:21   they had like you know text for you to [TS]

01:05:23   read or something on the gamepad screen [TS]

01:05:25   and they have this gigantic like [TS]

01:05:28   comically big like brontosaurus scroll [TS]

01:05:30   thumb did you see that anything like it [TS]

01:05:32   it's like a proportional scroll thumb [TS]

01:05:35   that fills up more than half the screen [TS]

01:05:36   is comically huge it's like it's like [TS]

01:05:39   super sized and so you see that and [TS]

01:05:42   you're like uh you know right away this [TS]

01:05:43   is weird because it's like wait wait [TS]

01:05:45   this is a touchscreen why aren't they [TS]

01:05:47   using the iOS way we're like you don't [TS]

01:05:48   see a giant squirrel thumb and iOS like [TS]

01:05:50   don't scroll them only appears that you [TS]

01:05:51   grabbed the whole page and you drag it [TS]

01:05:53   why don't they do that but I kind of see [TS]

01:05:55   why they don't do that because when I [TS]

01:05:57   went to grab this girl thumb and move it [TS]

01:05:58   it was like hit or miss because I'm not [TS]

01:06:00   used applying enough pressure especially [TS]

01:06:02   when you're sliding your finger like you [TS]

01:06:03   want to put your finger on this girls [TS]

01:06:05   come and move it down the touchscreen [TS]

01:06:06   but it's not you realize you have to [TS]

01:06:08   apply constant pressure otherwise it [TS]

01:06:10   thinks you've stopped pressing the [TS]

01:06:11   screen because it has no idea that [TS]

01:06:12   you're your finger is touching the [TS]

01:06:13   screen unless you press and so it's kind [TS]

01:06:15   of like stop start or sometimes we would [TS]

01:06:18   register at app instead of a drag and [TS]

01:06:20   you know all sorts of fumbling problems [TS]

01:06:23   like that because you're not used to and [TS]

01:06:24   it's uncomfortable to apply pressure [TS]

01:06:25   like that and so now I see why they [TS]

01:06:26   didn't just make you grab the whole [TS]

01:06:28   region because he tried to grab the [TS]

01:06:29   whole region and scroll it if it if you [TS]

01:06:32   let up pressure and it suddenly [TS]

01:06:33   interprets what you're doing is a tap [TS]

01:06:34   that could beat apple stuff in there [TS]

01:06:35   like links or buttons or other things so [TS]

01:06:37   they want to give you a dedicated region [TS]

01:06:38   here's where you screw up you're [TS]

01:06:39   scrolling you [TS]

01:06:40   growing over here and eventually I guess [TS]

01:06:42   it will train us to apply the right [TS]

01:06:44   pressure with our fingernail or whatever [TS]

01:06:45   to to scroll the thing but that said the [TS]

01:06:49   scrolling was surprisingly responsive if [TS]

01:06:51   you provided enough pressure like the [TS]

01:06:53   the jitteriness was not because it [TS]

01:06:55   couldn't keep up with my scrolling and [TS]

01:06:56   that was one of my fears from seeing the [TS]

01:06:57   videos was that they couldn't even get [TS]

01:06:59   like a scrollable region of text to [TS]

01:07:00   perform well that fear was unfounded the [TS]

01:07:03   performance and the menus for just [TS]

01:07:04   growing text areas perfectly fine very [TS]

01:07:06   responsive if you applied the right [TS]

01:07:08   pressure and you can also scroll using [TS]

01:07:10   the analog sticks in the d-pad and stuff [TS]

01:07:12   so you don't need to mess with the [TS]

01:07:13   screen scrolling if you just want to do [TS]

01:07:14   with those then advantage that the iOS [TS]

01:07:17   devices don't have is this a million [TS]

01:07:18   other giggles around the thing there's [TS]

01:07:20   also a stylist so according to Steve [TS]

01:07:23   Jobs intend to blew it but you know [TS]

01:07:25   using using a stylus on a [TS]

01:07:27   pressure-sensitive screen really does [TS]

01:07:29   take me back to my palm days because [TS]

01:07:30   that's what it was got these little [TS]

01:07:31   plastic stylist things and a [TS]

01:07:33   pressure-sensitive screen and it's like [TS]

01:07:35   going back in time it what that was [TS]

01:07:37   actually i did not know maybe you know [TS]

01:07:39   i'm just shows how out of loop i was i [TS]

01:07:41   did not know that this thing had a [TS]

01:07:42   stylus period until at one point it's [TS]

01:07:45   like get the style and i was like oh why [TS]

01:07:47   of course it has one day what does it [TS]

01:07:49   not have it doesn't have like a solar [TS]

01:07:52   powered generator ain't nothing they [TS]

01:07:54   know and I'm like oh I guess it has a [TS]

01:07:56   stylist that's weird and I found that I [TS]

01:08:00   did not want to use it yeah well you [TS]

01:08:02   know it makes some sense because some [TS]

01:08:03   parts of the interfacing system allow [TS]

01:08:05   you to draw pictures you know you can [TS]

01:08:06   draw pictures to yourself that you see [TS]

01:08:08   in the me verse and intend to lend stuff [TS]

01:08:09   and drawing pictures you do not want to [TS]

01:08:11   draw with your finger on a precious [TS]

01:08:12   industry and let me tell you and solace [TS]

01:08:15   is perfect for that so it totally makes [TS]

01:08:17   sense of this styles and therefore for [TS]

01:08:19   the drawing type activities and you know [TS]

01:08:21   the thing is so big and it got [TS]

01:08:22   everything why the heck not uh one [TS]

01:08:25   problem with the stylist we already [TS]

01:08:26   almost lost it like in the first day we [TS]

01:08:28   had is like whereas the style it's right [TS]

01:08:30   because the kids take it out and they [TS]

01:08:31   use it because it is actually use in [TS]

01:08:33   gameplay which I'll get to in a little [TS]

01:08:34   bit they do sell these though and like [TS]

01:08:36   Target and wherever else for they're not [TS]

01:08:37   too expensive yeah so I felt like you [TS]

01:08:39   know the things should come out of the [TS]

01:08:40   box with like a packet of 17 of these [TS]

01:08:42   little cheap plans it's just a little [TS]

01:08:43   stick of plastic so I know should just [TS]

01:08:45   go out and buy them I should just [TS]

01:08:46   preemptively by all pack of them just [TS]

01:08:48   assume they're going to be lost and I [TS]

01:08:49   prefer them to be lost than to have it [TS]

01:08:51   attached with the string which something [TS]

01:08:52   like the leappad does [TS]

01:08:54   for little kids but they attach the [TS]

01:08:55   stylus with a string that is terrible [TS]

01:08:56   because the string is always in the way [TS]

01:08:57   and yeah yeah so I would prefer to lose [TS]

01:09:00   it then and have attached by string but [TS]

01:09:02   this they will get lost so next up to [TS]

01:09:06   the analog sticks on these things the [TS]

01:09:08   analog sticks is two of them were on the [TS]

01:09:09   bar on the right and left side of the [TS]

01:09:10   gamepad controller I hope everyone is [TS]

01:09:13   from the past shows knows what the [TS]

01:09:14   gamepad controller is not gonna you know [TS]

01:09:15   go back and read ascribe to thing but [TS]

01:09:17   now that have it in my hands we're just [TS]

01:09:19   going to the detail so if you don't know [TS]

01:09:20   what I'm talking about and don't [TS]

01:09:21   understand what I'm talking about with a [TS]

01:09:22   screen and a stylist and sticks just [TS]

01:09:24   look up we u gamepad and you will find [TS]

01:09:26   it up the analog sticks are commendably [TS]

01:09:30   typed a very little slop slop is like [TS]

01:09:33   when you there's a dead spot in the [TS]

01:09:35   center where you can move the stick in a [TS]

01:09:37   certain direction and nothing happens [TS]

01:09:38   yet because you haven't actually sent a [TS]

01:09:40   signal to the council all you're doing [TS]

01:09:42   is moving in an empty space between like [TS]

01:09:44   the lever that controls the little [TS]

01:09:45   thingy so these things feel super tight [TS]

01:09:47   as they showed out of the box but they [TS]

01:09:48   feel very very tight oh and when I was [TS]

01:09:51   noting that tightness it when i was [TS]

01:09:54   first using the thing and playing with [TS]

01:09:55   it it made me think about oh my god what [TS]

01:09:57   the heck am I gonna do if they start to [TS]

01:09:59   loosen up because you know my original [TS]

01:10:01   GameCube controller the one that came [TS]

01:10:03   with my original purple Game Cube has a [TS]

01:10:04   huge amount of slop and it like this is [TS]

01:10:06   gigantic dead zone all around center [TS]

01:10:08   point of that thing because you know the [TS]

01:10:10   plastic internal parts with whatever [TS]

01:10:11   we're out from just years and years of [TS]

01:10:13   abuse especially if you have super smash [TS]

01:10:14   brothers for the Gamecube you will [TS]

01:10:15   destroy your analog stick so over the [TS]

01:10:18   years i purchased many new game [TS]

01:10:20   controllers and i'm purchasing not [TS]

01:10:21   because the old ones bro quit because i [TS]

01:10:23   want a tighter stick lots of innuendo in [TS]

01:10:25   the show ha i mean you can't play monkey [TS]

01:10:27   ball with it with a loose analog stick [TS]

01:10:29   you just can't needs to be tight so if [TS]

01:10:32   the analog sticks on the game pits start [TS]

01:10:34   to loosen up after you what do I have to [TS]

01:10:36   do I have to buy like a new game pad for [TS]

01:10:38   $85 or whatever it costs I don't want to [TS]

01:10:40   you know that's I don't want to have to [TS]

01:10:42   buy a whole new game pad in the ifixit [TS]

01:10:44   teardown they showed that the internal [TS]

01:10:45   parts are easily replaceable so maybe [TS]

01:10:47   they'll be like aftermarket things where [TS]

01:10:49   i can buy new analog sticks but i'm not [TS]

01:10:51   looking forward to the day that the [TS]

01:10:53   analog sticks loosen up in this game but [TS]

01:10:54   maybe they've made a breakthrough in [TS]

01:10:55   technology and they won't loosen up and [TS]

01:10:56   they're made of like adamantium [TS]

01:10:57   internally or something I don't know but [TS]

01:10:59   I feel like super smash brothers for the [TS]

01:11:01   Wii U or for any console can destroy any [TS]

01:11:03   analog stick with enough usage [TS]

01:11:07   so anyway the sticks themselves are a [TS]

01:11:08   lot like the analog sticks on the wii [TS]

01:11:09   nunchuk and there's no octagonal [TS]

01:11:12   surround as i already planned about so [TS]

01:11:16   I'm sad about that and if you really pay [TS]

01:11:19   attention when you're first just [TS]

01:11:20   flicking around the pads you'll notice [TS]

01:11:21   that there's this tell me if you notice [TS]

01:11:24   this may be just me there's this tiny [TS]

01:11:27   sticky sensation and sound just off [TS]

01:11:29   center so if you move the stick just a [TS]

01:11:31   little bit in any direction you hear [TS]

01:11:33   this little sound almost like a sticker [TS]

01:11:35   is being partially peeled off a surface [TS]

01:11:37   like right you feet and you also feel a [TS]

01:11:40   little hitch ah and that sensation which [TS]

01:11:43   is weird is giving you a clue it's that [TS]

01:11:47   sensation is part of the mechanism that [TS]

01:11:49   allows both sticks to be pressed in word [TS]

01:11:51   for an additional input you can press [TS]

01:11:52   the sticks in you can do is I think on [TS]

01:11:53   the xbox too and I don't know if you can [TS]

01:11:55   do the ps3 but anyway a lot of these [TS]

01:11:58   makers for you like we can add one more [TS]

01:11:59   possible button just push the stick [TS]

01:12:01   inward right and what you're feeling [TS]

01:12:03   when you're not pushing this big gamer [TS]

01:12:05   but just using a stick as a normal stick [TS]

01:12:06   is that little off-center stickiness is [TS]

01:12:08   the hint them that mechanism exists i [TS]

01:12:11   don't think it's an attentional hint but [TS]

01:12:12   that's what i'm attributing to it all [TS]

01:12:14   right so here's the problem I don't mind [TS]

01:12:15   that sensation the office Anderson [TS]

01:12:17   station with the sticky thing maybe [TS]

01:12:18   that'll go away when they loosen up [TS]

01:12:19   which you don't want to happen but [TS]

01:12:22   actually doing this actually pressing [TS]

01:12:24   one or both of the sticks inward to get [TS]

01:12:26   that press which some things some games [TS]

01:12:28   actually do require this as part of the [TS]

01:12:30   gameplay doing that feels and sounds [TS]

01:12:32   awful it I mean there's no slop it's not [TS]

01:12:36   it's not like you know it has slapping [TS]

01:12:38   anything but like is that's the one [TS]

01:12:40   thing is like if you have a press and [TS]

01:12:41   you're like oh every time I'm just using [TS]

01:12:42   the stickers normal stick accidentally [TS]

01:12:43   press it in and that feels bad too but [TS]

01:12:45   that doesn't happen here but when you [TS]

01:12:47   press them in it's like you're cracking [TS]

01:12:49   the gamepad's knuckles and and I'm not a [TS]

01:12:51   person who's grossed out by knuckle [TS]

01:12:52   cracking sounds for the most part but [TS]

01:12:54   pressing downward on those gamepads fix [TS]

01:12:56   just feels like he gives it just like [TS]

01:12:59   nails on a chalkboard just makes me feel [TS]

01:13:01   icky and the other sensation that comes [TS]

01:13:03   to mind again bringing back to my palm [TS]

01:13:04   days is the spine crunching sound that [TS]

01:13:07   you would get when you took an old palm [TS]

01:13:08   thing with a big proprietary multi-pin [TS]

01:13:10   port on the bottom when you put one of [TS]

01:13:12   those into their dock you remember ahead [TS]

01:13:13   doing that like I do like at an angle [TS]

01:13:16   and it would like crunching that was [TS]

01:13:18   like a dry crunch the game [TS]

01:13:20   and pressing in that is a wet knuckle [TS]

01:13:22   cracking noise you should get your have [TS]

01:13:24   how to get your your gamepad controller [TS]

01:13:26   now press that thing and tell me that is [TS]

01:13:27   not like the the worst sensation that [TS]

01:13:30   you know intentional I don't sentential [TS]

01:13:32   sensation but it's something you're [TS]

01:13:33   going to feel and it's not just a sound [TS]

01:13:36   it feels like wet and gross and [TS]

01:13:39   unsatisfying is not good and the bottom [TS]

01:13:42   line is it actively discourages me from [TS]

01:13:44   using the features in the game the [TS]

01:13:46   required pressing in like boost the [TS]

01:13:47   boosting mechanic in the Metroid blast [TS]

01:13:49   game Nintendo land I just avoid boosting [TS]

01:13:52   ever because I don't want to feel that [TS]

01:13:53   feeling of pressing in that you know I [TS]

01:13:55   don't like that mechanic in general I [TS]

01:13:57   don't like pressing in the sticks for [TS]

01:13:58   any type of movie feel like you should [TS]

01:13:59   be able to use the face buttons and the [TS]

01:14:00   triggers that are there especially if it [TS]

01:14:02   requires fine you know analog [TS]

01:14:04   directional control i don't want also [TS]

01:14:05   have to shove the thing in but this is [TS]

01:14:07   just this is a key maybe this is the [TS]

01:14:09   personal thing you can try it yourself [TS]

01:14:10   and see if you agree that indeed a key [TS]

01:14:12   you want me to go get it I don't you [TS]

01:14:17   have people to do that yes can you go [TS]

01:14:19   get please Robin the here's the key in [TS]

01:14:23   the they do you want me to bring I have [TS]

01:14:25   the pro controller you can want to ask [TS]

01:14:27   me about that I'll have ever get it [TS]

01:14:28   right now yeah you can give me your gear [TS]

01:14:30   bags I suppose that we controller the [TS]

01:14:32   one with the screen and the other one [TS]

01:14:34   thank you Hattie's on a plane so Rob [TS]

01:14:38   Robin is going to get hey go there she [TS]

01:14:42   goes so uh next bit while you wait the [TS]

01:14:45   trigger is on the thing triggers in the [TS]

01:14:47   shoulder buttons I think they're good [TS]

01:14:48   they fall under your fingers readily [TS]

01:14:50   than uh talk word to hit they feel good [TS]

01:14:52   it's kind of a shame that they are all [TS]

01:14:54   digital buttons rather than analog [TS]

01:14:57   meaning you're either pressing the [TS]

01:14:58   button or you're not there's no like [TS]

01:15:00   halfway so you can't use it as like a [TS]

01:15:01   fine-tuned throttle in a racing game [TS]

01:15:03   where you press it in partially uh the [TS]

01:15:06   the gamecube controllers analog trigger [TS]

01:15:10   buttons we're kind of crappy but the [TS]

01:15:11   analog triggers on the xbox controller [TS]

01:15:13   actually are good and useful you can use [TS]

01:15:15   them for throttles and racing games but [TS]

01:15:16   that's not gonna happen you're busy to [TS]

01:15:17   just on/off buttons unless it's a shame [TS]

01:15:19   but the texture on the buttons thanks [TS]

01:15:22   i'm very very much trouble how you got [TS]

01:15:24   announced she has them thank you you can [TS]

01:15:26   give it a try first of all did first of [TS]

01:15:28   all did I before I mentioned this did [TS]

01:15:30   you even know that that was a thing you [TS]

01:15:31   could do with this controller pressing [TS]

01:15:32   me out [TS]

01:15:33   sticks no no never never I mean you [TS]

01:15:36   would have eventually known if you play [TS]

01:15:37   one of the games that instruct you to do [TS]

01:15:38   it but it never occurred to you that [TS]

01:15:39   that was a thing that could be done so [TS]

01:15:42   now do it tell me how it feels that's it [TS]

01:15:45   do you hear it and I hear it I mean it's [TS]

01:15:47   not gonna sound the same over you know [TS]

01:15:48   over Skype over it is not it's not as [TS]

01:15:51   bad as you're making it out but it's not [TS]

01:15:53   it's not good maybe you got a defective [TS]

01:15:55   one no I mean I mean it's not you're [TS]

01:15:58   right it's not terrible i'm doing i'm [TS]

01:15:59   doing right now with mine too it just [TS]

01:16:01   does not feel good to me maybe really [TS]

01:16:02   it's not it's not like it I get what you [TS]

01:16:06   mean when you because I hadn't even [TS]

01:16:07   tried this I get what you mean that it [TS]

01:16:09   feels more like a like something like [TS]

01:16:13   like you're your prey you're pushing the [TS]

01:16:16   boundaries of the the way that this [TS]

01:16:18   thing has been a fixed in there as [TS]

01:16:20   opposed to somebody you should be doing [TS]

01:16:23   yeah is like yeah like you're not [TS]

01:16:25   breaking your fingers or making them do [TS]

01:16:27   something they're not supposed to do but [TS]

01:16:29   on the other hand it's also like not the [TS]

01:16:31   normal operation of fingers to be [TS]

01:16:33   cracking the knuckled and it makes a [TS]

01:16:34   similar sound and feels a similar way [TS]

01:16:36   maybe you know again I'd rather have it [TS]

01:16:39   be this tight and have an icky sound [TS]

01:16:41   than be loosened annoying me when I'm [TS]

01:16:42   just using analog controls but I find it [TS]

01:16:44   not satisfying and that's what the [TS]

01:16:47   things that make a controller these fine [TS]

01:16:48   details like it's about to mention [TS]

01:16:49   before you got the controllers and that [TS]

01:16:51   the texture on the shoulder buttons if [TS]

01:16:54   you flip it over and look at those like [TS]

01:16:56   it that's a nice plastic texture like [TS]

01:16:58   it's a matte finish off I knit you know [TS]

01:17:02   he can't even answer he's gonna have a [TS]

01:17:03   show anymore yeah would would find this [TS]

01:17:07   texture of plastic right at home on a [TS]

01:17:08   BMW console like for the texture that's [TS]

01:17:11   on the shoulder button in the trigger [TS]

01:17:13   buttons it's a nice matte finish [TS]

01:17:14   expensive feeling and you know those the [TS]

01:17:17   details that make up the great [TS]

01:17:18   controller you know all the little parts [TS]

01:17:20   that you touch and feel have to feel [TS]

01:17:21   good now I'm holding the pro controller [TS]

01:17:23   now does it do the same thing it does [TS]

01:17:25   exactly the same thing it's a little [TS]

01:17:27   it's a little cheaper feeling when you [TS]

01:17:31   press it down but it feels like it goes [TS]

01:17:33   down a little bit more it does it feel [TS]

01:17:38   like the little the squishing do you [TS]

01:17:40   feel like the wet squish or is it are [TS]

01:17:42   kind of a dry thunk is more dry than [TS]

01:17:46   what [TS]

01:17:46   like when you're taking walk and does it [TS]

01:17:48   have like cinnamon or nutmeg [TS]

01:17:50   connoisseurs of the controller a bit of [TS]

01:17:52   a blackberry no time getting here and [TS]

01:17:54   the finish is like cherry and horse [TS]

01:17:57   manure a little bit of a musty and [TS]

01:17:59   there's a taste of the barnyard in this [TS]

01:18:02   one yeah yeah it it does not feel as [TS]

01:18:05   good as the main controller but it does [TS]

01:18:08   not feel bad it looks good it feels [TS]

01:18:11   great the Wii U pro controller it feels [TS]

01:18:13   great though yeah I'm gonna get when I [TS]

01:18:15   was and check it out although I don't [TS]

01:18:17   think it will displace the Gamecube no [TS]

01:18:18   I'm sure it won't so the d-pad speaking [TS]

01:18:22   of things to feel good the deep head on [TS]

01:18:23   the the gamepad controller after the [TS]

01:18:26   embarrassing d-pad on the gamecube [TS]

01:18:28   controller which was the low point in [TS]

01:18:29   the history of Nintendo's d-pads this [TS]

01:18:31   d-pad on the gamepad controller is great [TS]

01:18:32   it's really big it's they got the nice [TS]

01:18:34   finish on its nicely curved it's a [TS]

01:18:36   beautiful d-pad maybe people might [TS]

01:18:38   complain that they want to load impul in [TS]

01:18:39   the middle I don't I think it's great [TS]

01:18:40   the way it is and you know the material [TS]

01:18:44   choice is overall in the game Pettit [TS]

01:18:46   really nice like that the glossy finish [TS]

01:18:47   on the top I thought maybe that's going [TS]

01:18:49   to be lame and of course you know glossy [TS]

01:18:50   black finish plastics gonna show [TS]

01:18:52   fingerprints and it does it shows [TS]

01:18:53   fingerprints and it gets all mucky and [TS]

01:18:55   everything but like in practice it [TS]

01:18:57   doesn't bother me like look this is the [TS]

01:18:58   thing you're gonna hold in your hand [TS]

01:18:59   it's gonna get your monkey finger grease [TS]

01:19:00   all over it fine I think it works I [TS]

01:19:02   think having the glossy top with the [TS]

01:19:04   matte finish buttons and matte finish [TS]

01:19:05   you know controller things combined with [TS]

01:19:08   like the non-glossy bottom where you [TS]

01:19:10   grip it it all it all works out because [TS]

01:19:12   I want more traction on the bottom but [TS]

01:19:15   I'm okay for being slippery on the top [TS]

01:19:16   in fact it might even be a benefit so I [TS]

01:19:18   can differentiate by texture that you [TS]

01:19:19   know the controls and everything so I [TS]

01:19:22   give a thumbs up to to that design the [TS]

01:19:24   main button area with a B and X and Y [TS]

01:19:26   arranged in a diamond pattern [TS]

01:19:27   disappointing to me because all the [TS]

01:19:29   buttons are the same size and they're [TS]

01:19:30   arranged in a perfectly symmetrical [TS]

01:19:32   diamond pattern because that looks nice [TS]

01:19:33   not because that's the best way to put [TS]

01:19:35   them for your fingers which is a shame [TS]

01:19:36   the buttons are also not in the primary [TS]

01:19:39   control position but having played [TS]

01:19:41   several dual-stick games with the [TS]

01:19:42   gamepad controller I can see why they [TS]

01:19:44   did that like it's much better to have [TS]

01:19:46   none offset analog sticks than to put [TS]

01:19:48   the buttons in the primary control [TS]

01:19:50   position on the right side what burns me [TS]

01:19:53   more is the pro controller does the same [TS]

01:19:54   thing you've got in front of it also [TS]

01:19:55   doesn't have the buttons in the primary [TS]

01:19:57   position it's like you gotta do that [TS]

01:19:58   with both of them [TS]

01:19:59   I can only hope the next real Mario or [TS]

01:20:01   Zelda game like not the 2d ones or [TS]

01:20:03   anything we'll use the wii remote and [TS]

01:20:06   the nunchuck or something so i don't [TS]

01:20:07   have to play an 80-hour game with my [TS]

01:20:09   left thumb 3 inches higher than my right [TS]

01:20:11   thumb because they're offset you know I [TS]

01:20:13   that may upset me but for now I [TS]

01:20:15   understand why they did the way they did [TS]

01:20:17   it make sense with the the games that I [TS]

01:20:18   played on the gamepad gripping the [TS]

01:20:21   gamepad controller it's got a minor case [TS]

01:20:24   of Dreamcast syndrome Dreamcast [TS]

01:20:26   controller syndrome a Dreamcast had a [TS]

01:20:29   controller where the sides were straight [TS]

01:20:31   and you sort of put your fingers under [TS]

01:20:32   little ridges on the side that's very [TS]

01:20:35   much like the gamepad only it's much [TS]

01:20:36   wider and the sides of the gamepad are [TS]

01:20:39   exactly perpendicular to the front and [TS]

01:20:40   back I mean it's curved it's got curve [TS]

01:20:42   you know corners and everything but it's [TS]

01:20:43   a rectangle shape and that's also mostly [TS]

01:20:46   true of the gamecube controller the game [TS]

01:20:47   coupe with all doesn't flare out in the [TS]

01:20:49   same way that the ps3 controllers horns [TS]

01:20:51   do but the design of the game controller [TS]

01:20:55   with the actual little horn nubby things [TS]

01:20:56   is such that your arm can still come in [TS]

01:20:58   from an angle and you can comfortably [TS]

01:21:00   grip the thing using a little horns you [TS]

01:21:03   don't have to make like for example your [TS]

01:21:04   the line from your elbow to your wrists [TS]

01:21:06   you know have to make two parallel lines [TS]

01:21:08   like go like you know Tyrannosaurus Rex [TS]

01:21:10   where you get your elbows together so [TS]

01:21:11   they're so that your elbows are two [TS]

01:21:13   inches apart because so your hands can [TS]

01:21:15   be two inches apart you don't come in [TS]

01:21:17   from an angle right well if you try to [TS]

01:21:18   come in from an angle on the gamepad [TS]

01:21:20   controller it feels awkward because all [TS]

01:21:21   you've got us that little ribbed ridge [TS]

01:21:23   on the bottom to put your fingers [TS]

01:21:25   underneath so it forces your hands to [TS]

01:21:27   start to become parallel with the edges [TS]

01:21:29   of the gamepad which means you have lots [TS]

01:21:30   of risk deflection this would much be [TS]

01:21:32   much better with a diagram but if you're [TS]

01:21:33   holding your gamepad controller you can [TS]

01:21:35   kind of see this you know it's hard to [TS]

01:21:37   keep alignment between your forearms and [TS]

01:21:40   your wrists it's hard not to let your [TS]

01:21:42   hands just go flat to the side and then [TS]

01:21:43   your arms go out at an angle and that's [TS]

01:21:45   very bad if you have our sire even if [TS]

01:21:47   you don't to have to make be making [TS]

01:21:49   constant repeated to find motions of [TS]

01:21:51   your fingers while your tendons go [TS]

01:21:53   through a risk that's bent at an angle [TS]

01:21:55   you want you want your wrist to be [TS]

01:21:57   straight so you want your arms to come [TS]

01:21:58   in from an angle from it so again I hope [TS]

01:22:01   not to use the gamepad in the majority [TS]

01:22:04   of the time that I use that I play like [TS]

01:22:06   my serious games no serious my like my [TS]

01:22:09   real Zelda game that I'm going to play [TS]

01:22:10   on the thing in the real 3d Mario game [TS]

01:22:12   that I'm going to play maybe [TS]

01:22:13   fooling myself and I should just resign [TS]

01:22:14   myself to the fact that I'm gonna be [TS]

01:22:15   playing zelda for 80 hours on a by [TS]

01:22:17   holding a gamepad but I will be sad [TS]

01:22:19   about that because the ergonomics are [TS]

01:22:20   not great then why the ergonomics not [TS]

01:22:22   great there's no reason they couldn't [TS]

01:22:23   made this thing some crazy shape that [TS]

01:22:25   was perfect for gripping onto listen no [TS]

01:22:27   we got to make it look like a rectangle [TS]

01:22:28   that's like you know I understand why [TS]

01:22:30   they did it with the wii remote it's [TS]

01:22:31   supposed to look like a television [TS]

01:22:32   remote control at least they curve the [TS]

01:22:33   bottom up but that worked out okay for [TS]

01:22:34   them there's no reason this thing has to [TS]

01:22:36   be a rectangle except for them saying [TS]

01:22:37   well we wanted to look kind of like a [TS]

01:22:38   tablet I mean it does looks like a leap [TS]

01:22:40   pad not a not an iPad but you know I [TS]

01:22:43   wish they would have said you know what [TS]

01:22:44   there's no reason this has to look like [TS]

01:22:45   a tablet make it so that if not you [TS]

01:22:48   don't have to be adult hands there make [TS]

01:22:49   it so that it has handles that you know [TS]

01:22:52   you can grip from an angle and have your [TS]

01:22:54   hands full readily on the controls it [TS]

01:22:55   doesn't have to look like a tablet at [TS]

01:22:57   all and in fact they've already because [TS]

01:22:59   it's made kind of like a tablet [TS]

01:23:00   frequently you know we'll put it down on [TS]

01:23:03   the couch for a second or put it down on [TS]

01:23:04   a lap or on a pillow on someone's lap [TS]

01:23:06   and it will accidentally activate the [TS]

01:23:07   left or right shoulder buttons causing [TS]

01:23:09   the screen to jump and then you know the [TS]

01:23:10   kids are confused about why the screen [TS]

01:23:12   keeps changing and they're not touching [TS]

01:23:13   it it's because they're activating the [TS]

01:23:14   shoulder buttons because the shoulder [TS]

01:23:15   buttons you know touch the ground when [TS]

01:23:17   you put it down because it's made kind [TS]

01:23:19   of like a flat tray so I do wish that [TS]

01:23:21   they had made it much uglier looking and [TS]

01:23:23   weird-looking but there was more [TS]

01:23:24   comfortable to hold and than it is but [TS]

01:23:26   what can you do video lag once you turn [TS]

01:23:30   the thing on like if you use a game that [TS]

01:23:32   shows the same image on the TV screen as [TS]

01:23:35   I goes yeah what did that I was very [TS]

01:23:37   curious to hear your thoughts on this [TS]

01:23:40   yeah remember the video that I think of [TS]

01:23:41   putting the show notes of showing some [TS]

01:23:43   guy like showing it was like 17 frames [TS]

01:23:45   of lag between like it would you know [TS]

01:23:47   Remy look we learned that the game pad [TS]

01:23:49   gets its signal 160 of a second later [TS]

01:23:53   than the tell the back of the television [TS]

01:23:55   set gets that same signal but then we [TS]

01:23:56   also learn from that video that many [TS]

01:23:58   television sets introduced tremendous [TS]

01:23:59   delays and that causes it to look like [TS]

01:24:02   the gamepad is actually way way ahead of [TS]

01:24:03   the television because the television [TS]

01:24:05   even though we got it signal first it [TS]

01:24:06   had to be processed through all these [TS]

01:24:07   different steps and by the time it gets [TS]

01:24:08   displayed the gamepad is way ahead uh in [TS]

01:24:11   my setup with my television set into [TS]

01:24:14   like you know the game mode that [TS]

01:24:16   supposedly removes all the processing [TS]

01:24:17   and everything I have like a custom game [TS]

01:24:19   mode the tweaks the color settings so [TS]

01:24:21   though not hideous by the way if you [TS]

01:24:22   have game mode for your television don't [TS]

01:24:24   just set it to game mode because game [TS]

01:24:25   mode always cranks up the [TS]

01:24:27   eration and brightness to insane levels [TS]

01:24:28   and makes everything look cartoonish try [TS]

01:24:30   to actually adjust the color bounds but [TS]

01:24:31   also try to disable all the noise [TS]

01:24:34   filtering stuff that slows down your [TS]

01:24:36   processing so what I did was played the [TS]

01:24:38   new super mario bros u which mirrors the [TS]

01:24:40   screen in both locations and hold the [TS]

01:24:41   thing out in front of me and see if i [TS]

01:24:43   could detect visually any difference [TS]

01:24:45   between what i see on the TV screen and [TS]

01:24:48   what i see on the gamepad screen and i [TS]

01:24:50   could not I couldn't tell if one was [TS]

01:24:52   ahead or they look it looked exactly [TS]

01:24:53   dead-on maybe it's because my television [TS]

01:24:56   introduces a 160 of a second delay and [TS]

01:24:57   now they're exactly in sync or maybe [TS]

01:24:59   it's because I can't detect the 163 of a [TS]

01:25:01   second delay but suffice it to say that [TS]

01:25:03   it is a non issue with my setup it is ah [TS]

01:25:05   perfectly support someone else then chat [TS]

01:25:08   room off my TV s THX mode it does I [TS]

01:25:10   don't know how that helps me though is [TS]

01:25:13   that THX mode still leave some [TS]

01:25:14   processing on it leave um so system [TS]

01:25:18   menus and stuff i'm also gonna skip [TS]

01:25:19   these because they're boring with the [TS]

01:25:21   miiverse and all that stuff but suffice [TS]

01:25:22   it to say that the load times between [TS]

01:25:24   menu screens is way way way way way too [TS]

01:25:26   long I guess imagine if you were using [TS]

01:25:28   iOS and every time you hit the home [TS]

01:25:30   button it was a 15 second delay before [TS]

01:25:31   you saw a springboard again okay that's [TS]

01:25:33   what it's like using this thing because [TS]

01:25:34   it has a home button and you press it [TS]

01:25:35   you're like all right come on I shall we [TS]

01:25:39   throw me out screaming all the icons [TS]

01:25:40   again and you're staring at it there's [TS]

01:25:41   no progress bar there's no waiting [TS]

01:25:43   cursor you're just staring at a thing it [TS]

01:25:44   says like we liked it frees you is it [TS]

01:25:46   dead no it's just that's unacceptable as [TS]

01:25:48   Lemongrab would say I actually did see [TS]

01:25:51   that episode damn should be excited [TS]

01:25:53   about that I'm thrilled to hear that I [TS]

01:25:54   had no idea that you had just seen that [TS]

01:25:56   i paid a season pass for words but i [TS]

01:25:57   thought the kids might like it and i [TS]

01:25:58   showed it to him and they did not like [TS]

01:25:59   it but one of them says they watched was [TS]

01:26:01   uh unacceptable huh yeah i don't [TS]

01:26:05   understand why these menus are so slow [TS]

01:26:07   because this entire thing like the OS [TS]

01:26:09   and all those like you live in a [TS]

01:26:11   springboard that's all n flash on the [TS]

01:26:13   wii it's not like there's an optical [TS]

01:26:14   just to slow it down it's not like we're [TS]

01:26:15   waited waiting on game load times are [TS]

01:26:17   seek from some little optical you know [TS]

01:26:19   laser reading a spinning disk why is it [TS]

01:26:22   so slow why is it take so long to go [TS]

01:26:23   back to the screen so i really hope [TS]

01:26:25   system updates improve this mine fed and [TS]

01:26:28   chat room says supposedly there's [TS]

01:26:29   already a update to help fix this i I [TS]

01:26:31   believe they can fix it and it amazes me [TS]

01:26:34   that a company so obsessed with [TS]

01:26:36   responsiveness in the actual games is so [TS]

01:26:38   bad at making just you know menus that [TS]

01:26:40   can travel between like it should be [TS]

01:26:41   instantaneous you know but it's not all [TS]

01:26:46   right so I want to talk about the two [TS]

01:26:49   games that i got and then some overall [TS]

01:26:52   comments but do you want to do another [TS]

01:26:53   sponsor before i do that certainly we [TS]

01:26:55   can do our third and final sponsor its [TS]

01:26:56   source bits com a mobile app development [TS]

01:26:58   house these guys help you develop and [TS]

01:27:00   design your next application or game and [TS]

01:27:02   they instantly put over 300 dedicated [TS]

01:27:05   programmers and interface designers [TS]

01:27:07   behind your project and they can do that [TS]

01:27:08   full time they stand behind the idea [TS]

01:27:11   that when you focus on brilliant design [TS]

01:27:12   your product will become your marketing [TS]

01:27:14   your customers will become your [TS]

01:27:16   advertising these guys build [TS]

01:27:17   applications for iPhone iPad Android [TS]

01:27:20   Blackberry facebook I mean you name it [TS]

01:27:22   they can also build websites and web [TS]

01:27:24   backends it's pretty much full shop full [TS]

01:27:27   service they can integrate all these [TS]

01:27:30   things and they have a lot of experience [TS]

01:27:32   they've built more than 500 applications [TS]

01:27:34   for mobile web and desktop platforms 20 [TS]

01:27:37   of those have reached the top 10 in [TS]

01:27:38   global application marketplaces they [TS]

01:27:40   know what they're doing but don't let [TS]

01:27:42   those numbers of like 300 developers [TS]

01:27:45   scare you you can have a very small [TS]

01:27:47   project and maybe they only need one or [TS]

01:27:48   two of their developers to build it but [TS]

01:27:51   if you want to scale this thing up you [TS]

01:27:52   can do that they know how to do it you [TS]

01:27:54   go check these guys out source bits [TS]

01:27:57   dot-com when you're there click on the [TS]

01:27:59   work link and you'll see just how many [TS]

01:28:01   apps they built and I guarantee there's [TS]

01:28:03   a few of them you've used and probably [TS]

01:28:04   on your iPhone right now go check them [TS]

01:28:06   out source bits com all right I have two [TS]

01:28:11   games for my wii u I've got a Nintendo [TS]

01:28:13   land which came with the console right [TS]

01:28:15   which was really I think the only game I [TS]

01:28:17   needed to get a measure of the system [TS]

01:28:19   because it is kind of the UH that's the [TS]

01:28:21   purpose that game and I also have what [TS]

01:28:24   does the full title this thing uh okay [TS]

01:28:28   imma know it's a new super mario [TS]

01:28:29   brothers you it's kind of long longer [TS]

01:28:34   title yeah I think that's I think it [TS]

01:28:35   should i'm looking it up right now but I [TS]

01:28:41   just delete everything about your super [TS]

01:28:43   marry you did you delete that yeah my [TS]

01:28:46   notes like maybe I just leave okay it is [TS]

01:28:48   called new super mario brothers you oh [TS]

01:28:50   there it is I just Kim and I put it into [TS]

01:28:53   the show notes which [TS]

01:28:54   by the way can be found at five by five [TS]

01:28:55   TV / hypercritical / 99 yeah that's too [TS]

01:29:01   much like how long can you put new in [TS]

01:29:02   front of Super Mario Brothers and it's [TS]

01:29:04   obvious they already had new super mario [TS]

01:29:06   brothers like was like originally on the [TS]

01:29:07   des or something like you can't still be [TS]

01:29:09   new why see why do they need to put new [TS]

01:29:11   I think it's Ben's like we stop making [TS]

01:29:14   2d Mario's for a while and then they [TS]

01:29:15   said you know we're gonna make more 2d [TS]

01:29:17   Mario's and now it's like the new super [TS]

01:29:18   mario brothers you to distinction I [TS]

01:29:20   don't know and how it would wait so it [TS]

01:29:23   there's there isn't a super mario [TS]

01:29:25   brothers you buy without the new yeah [TS]

01:29:28   new super mario brothers parenthesized [TS]

01:29:30   that expression that i get at indicates [TS]

01:29:34   the second second run at making to do [TS]

01:29:36   marrow games that nintendo started a [TS]

01:29:38   couple years but on it okay and now it's [TS]

01:29:40   the U version of that I wondered that I [TS]

01:29:42   wondered that I do having been out of [TS]

01:29:44   this for a long time I'd I had no idea [TS]

01:29:46   and I thought that they would just were [TS]

01:29:48   calling it new because hey like the Wii [TS]

01:29:50   U is new you know yeah it doesn't make [TS]

01:29:55   sense and once again proves that uh [TS]

01:29:56   spoken and written languages should have [TS]

01:29:59   parentheses just like programming [TS]

01:30:00   languages do because it really helps to [TS]

01:30:02   aid an understanding of precedence I [TS]

01:30:05   don't think it's gonna catch on though [TS]

01:30:08   alright so let me start by saying as you [TS]

01:30:10   might have noticed that i am not a fan [TS]

01:30:12   of 2d Mario games yes you did mention [TS]

01:30:14   that you said you don't like [TS]

01:30:15   side-scrollers in general you would [TS]

01:30:17   prefer the 3d type games yeah I mean not [TS]

01:30:19   that I think the terrible and don't like [TS]

01:30:21   them but it's certainly they were you [TS]

01:30:22   know mesmerizing when the NES came out [TS]

01:30:24   to see the little guy run to the right [TS]

01:30:26   and jump like it was awesome right but [TS]

01:30:27   once the 3d versions came out I like how [TS]

01:30:29   I left those behind alright so I enjoyed [TS]

01:30:31   them when they were the state of the art [TS]

01:30:32   but once they weren't 3d gives much more [TS]

01:30:34   of what I wanted from that but the [TS]

01:30:35   reason I got it was that I just really [TS]

01:30:38   wanted to see uh I finally see Mario in [TS]

01:30:43   high definition this ain't was just like [TS]

01:30:44   it's been too long it's a long time [TS]

01:30:47   coming i waited so long was so [TS]

01:30:48   disappointed to the wii was in high [TS]

01:30:49   definition i just want to see the little [TS]

01:30:52   guy with the plumber hat and the [TS]

01:30:53   mustache running in high definition and [TS]

01:30:56   it definitely delivers on that the new [TS]

01:30:59   super barbells you looks really really [TS]

01:31:01   really good it doesn't look like a [TS]

01:31:03   groundbreaking it looks like what you [TS]

01:31:05   would expect a 2d Mario game [TS]

01:31:07   fuckin high definition but it really [TS]

01:31:08   yeah the backgrounds are beautiful [TS]

01:31:11   everything is nice and crisp and sharp [TS]

01:31:12   and I like how they designed everything [TS]

01:31:14   it's not like they didn't go for like [TS]

01:31:16   dark and edgy or whimsical is just [TS]

01:31:17   straight on right down the middle 2d [TS]

01:31:19   Mario game that's that it didn't get [TS]

01:31:21   very far on the game because I stink at [TS]

01:31:22   it and you know for the most part it [TS]

01:31:26   plays like a traditional 2d Mario game I [TS]

01:31:28   don't know if they've ever tweaked the [TS]

01:31:29   acceleration curves and stuff like that [TS]

01:31:30   certainly they have tweaked the graphics [TS]

01:31:32   but it feels the same that slow build up [TS]

01:31:34   that you can move around in the air and [TS]

01:31:35   all the different moves you can make and [TS]

01:31:36   they add extra things with the squirrel [TS]

01:31:38   suit and all the other spin moves that [TS]

01:31:40   you can do it's a little bit the [TS]

01:31:41   controls a little bit weird because you [TS]

01:31:42   can use the wii remote but then you have [TS]

01:31:45   use it sideways and i hate using the wii [TS]

01:31:46   remote sideways it is terrible [TS]

01:31:48   controller i'd rather have a i would [TS]

01:31:49   rather have an actual nes controller [TS]

01:31:51   than the wii remote sideways that tells [TS]

01:31:52   you how bad in terms of comfort level [TS]

01:31:54   the wii remote being sideways especially [TS]

01:31:57   but as the motion pro success around it [TS]

01:31:59   it's just a mess but then you have like [TS]

01:32:01   shake it to do a certain effect and you [TS]

01:32:03   don't wanna be shaking the thing while [TS]

01:32:04   you're trying to do precision [TS]

01:32:04   platforming you can use the triggers on [TS]

01:32:06   the gamepad to do it so the gamepad is [TS]

01:32:08   actually a superior controller for this [TS]

01:32:09   up one frustrating thing while playing [TS]

01:32:12   games like this that you can play in [TS]

01:32:13   either place is that when you choose to [TS]

01:32:15   play on the television ah you know I [TS]

01:32:17   don't want to be distracted by seeing [TS]

01:32:19   the same images moving around on the [TS]

01:32:20   gamepad screen all right like I mean I [TS]

01:32:23   guess I could just say well just don't [TS]

01:32:24   look down there because there's no [TS]

01:32:25   reason for you to look in there but it [TS]

01:32:26   but it's it's emitting light right and [TS]

01:32:28   if the room is a little bit dark and the [TS]

01:32:29   changes you know it I find a distracting [TS]

01:32:32   what I would really like is a simple way [TS]

01:32:33   to turn off the gamepad screen while [TS]

01:32:35   playing on the TV and there is a system [TS]

01:32:37   controlled way on the gamepad to turn [TS]

01:32:39   off the gamepad screen but every time [TS]

01:32:41   you tried to do that it turns right back [TS]

01:32:42   on as soon as I start using the gamepad [TS]

01:32:43   to control things I mean I guess I could [TS]

01:32:45   put a piece of paper over it or [TS]

01:32:47   something else to block it but you know [TS]

01:32:48   I suppose I'll just get used to ignoring [TS]

01:32:50   it but I would like it would be nice if [TS]

01:32:52   there was like a button bland there's a [TS]

01:32:53   hardware volume control on like a and [TS]

01:32:55   peppered is great I would like a [TS]

01:32:56   hardware just turn off the screen pun [TS]

01:32:57   but I guess probably people would [TS]

01:32:58   accidentally turn off the screen and [TS]

01:32:59   then not figure out what the heck is [TS]

01:33:00   going on and think the thing is [TS]

01:33:01   defective and return it so again I [TS]

01:33:03   understand why they didn't include it [TS]

01:33:05   but it would be nice ah the two player [TS]

01:33:09   aspects the playing this game with the [TS]

01:33:13   gamepad not particularly exciting the [TS]

01:33:14   second player can add blocks for their [TS]

01:33:16   first player and this is a place where [TS]

01:33:17   the stylist might come in because you [TS]

01:33:19   might want it you're looking at the [TS]

01:33:20   gamepad screen [TS]

01:33:20   all you're seeing is what I also see on [TS]

01:33:22   the television but you can tap with the [TS]

01:33:23   stylist to place blocks for me to jump [TS]

01:33:26   on adore a series of blocks you can also [TS]

01:33:28   stun enemies with your styles and stuff [TS]

01:33:29   like that so that's kind of fun but not [TS]

01:33:32   that earth-shattering in practice the [TS]

01:33:36   most effective use of that skill at [TS]

01:33:38   least for this household of people who [TS]

01:33:39   are not good at 2d Mario games is to [TS]

01:33:41   just place blocks preemptively place [TS]

01:33:44   brock's blocks on top of bottomless pits [TS]

01:33:46   just in case the person who's playing [TS]

01:33:47   this is a jump they'll land on your [TS]

01:33:49   blocks like it's not using blocks to [TS]

01:33:50   help them to get tuned out of reach area [TS]

01:33:51   so much is just blocking off the [TS]

01:33:53   bottomless pit so if they miss a jumpy [TS]

01:33:55   they'll still survive I think there's [TS]

01:33:58   also a multiplayer mode were multiple [TS]

01:34:00   people complain Mary's at the same time [TS]

01:34:01   sort of like the previous New Super [TS]

01:34:03   Mario Brothers games what we didn't try [TS]

01:34:04   that one and we didn't try that one [TS]

01:34:06   mostly because my son was raised on 3d [TS]

01:34:08   games and has very meager 2d skills like [TS]

01:34:12   I'm not good but I can you know clear [TS]

01:34:13   the first couple levels with no problem [TS]

01:34:15   you know yeah I don't expect to die and [TS]

01:34:17   tell them you know four or five levels [TS]

01:34:18   in he couldn't get past the very first [TS]

01:34:20   level this is not someone who's [TS]

01:34:21   incompetent of games is someone who's [TS]

01:34:24   like you know played through Twilight [TS]

01:34:26   Princess twice and in the process of [TS]

01:34:28   playing through Skyward Sword twice and [TS]

01:34:30   I wouldn't wake her twice as well he's [TS]

01:34:31   played 80-hour complicated games all the [TS]

01:34:34   way through to the end but he just has [TS]

01:34:37   no concept of how you know these 2d [TS]

01:34:39   controls work differently than 3d [TS]

01:34:41   controls and it's just too unforgiving [TS]

01:34:43   like if you miss one jump you fall into [TS]

01:34:45   the pit that's it you don't you can't [TS]

01:34:47   save yourself you know and he doesn't he [TS]

01:34:50   doesn't find it fun enough to continue [TS]

01:34:52   playing like he almost made it to the [TS]

01:34:54   end of the first board is like man you [TS]

01:34:55   know then ran into lives and that was it [TS]

01:34:56   hmm so you know I I don't blame and I [TS]

01:35:02   don't I didn't try to give him a 2d [TS]

01:35:04   gaming education because I think 3d [TS]

01:35:05   games are more fun so there we have it [TS]

01:35:06   with this game when I did play on the [TS]

01:35:09   game pet only I did notice a slight [TS]

01:35:10   softness of the image compared to what [TS]

01:35:12   it looks like on my fancy shmancy HDTV [TS]

01:35:14   because it is lower resolution you know [TS]

01:35:16   that the gamepad screen is not full [TS]

01:35:18   1080p HD resolution so it does have to [TS]

01:35:20   be scaled down and it looks a little bit [TS]

01:35:22   softer and part of that is also just [TS]

01:35:23   that my cell phone screen is higher [TS]

01:35:25   quality than this not-so-great LCD [TS]

01:35:27   screen here in terms of color saturation [TS]

01:35:29   in response time and all that stuff but [TS]

01:35:31   it's perfectly acceptable I would be [TS]

01:35:33   very happy [TS]

01:35:34   playing game just on the gamepad uh if [TS]

01:35:37   it was my only option and I was in the [TS]

01:35:38   middle of something and people wanted to [TS]

01:35:39   use the TV but you know I didn't really [TS]

01:35:42   have that problem I think it's more of [TS]

01:35:44   an appeal for kids because if you're an [TS]

01:35:46   adult no one gets to take the t be away [TS]

01:35:48   from you except for maybe your wife but [TS]

01:35:50   if you're a kid grown-ups are always [TS]

01:35:52   coming in and saying all right well you [TS]

01:35:53   know we want to watch whatever you want [TS]

01:35:54   to watch and you want to keep playing [TS]

01:35:55   your game and so you can on the gamepad [TS]

01:35:57   controller and I think that use case [TS]

01:35:59   actually will come in for kids playing [TS]

01:36:00   things and it's perfectly fine to play [TS]

01:36:02   on the device although I tested out the [TS]

01:36:04   range like how far away from the way you [TS]

01:36:06   can you get with the gamepad right and [TS]

01:36:08   still play with the thing and they kept [TS]

01:36:10   saying like it was like 26 feet but you [TS]

01:36:11   could actually go like a hundred feet [TS]

01:36:12   maybe you can go 100 feet in an empty [TS]

01:36:15   field but in my house with walls [TS]

01:36:17   apparently filled with metal or what I'm [TS]

01:36:18   that is going on here I just go into the [TS]

01:36:20   next room just one room over and that's [TS]

01:36:22   it can't get the signal anymore like I [TS]

01:36:24   couldn't even bring I couldn't even [TS]

01:36:25   bring the gamepad over to my computer in [TS]

01:36:27   the other room to look at the mac [TS]

01:36:28   address because the screen and the worst [TS]

01:36:29   thing about is that screen turns off and [TS]

01:36:31   says oh sorry lost signals the wii u was [TS]

01:36:33   like just leave the previous image on it [TS]

01:36:34   had the mac address that I me or [TS]

01:36:36   whatever I needed to copy down uh yeah I [TS]

01:36:39   can't use it in any other room than the [TS]

01:36:41   room the television this which is fine [TS]

01:36:42   like those couches in that room and or [TS]

01:36:44   whatever but don't expect that you're [TS]

01:36:45   gonna be able to go three floors up in [TS]

01:36:47   your house and keep playing your mario [TS]

01:36:48   game because you want maybe if your [TS]

01:36:50   house is more radio transparent than my [TS]

01:36:51   ancient house you'll have better luck [TS]

01:36:52   but i think it probably has very long [TS]

01:36:56   range as long as there's no obstructions [TS]

01:36:57   but once you get obstructions like the [TS]

01:36:58   gamepad just says no sorry lost signal [TS]

01:37:00   which makes some kind of sense because [TS]

01:37:01   it has very stringent latency demands [TS]

01:37:05   that you know to provide the performance [TS]

01:37:06   that it wants so it's not like Wi-Fi in [TS]

01:37:08   the house where if you can just barely [TS]

01:37:09   get a signal you know TCP we'll just [TS]

01:37:10   keep retrying and eventually your [TS]

01:37:12   packets will get through that's not the [TS]

01:37:13   same area has to be kind of real time so [TS]

01:37:17   that's Mary are you well that's not the [TS]

01:37:19   actual that's why i like to call it [TS]

01:37:20   because it's less of a mouthful then [TS]

01:37:22   there's nintendo land nintendo land is [TS]

01:37:25   trying to fill the role that wii sports [TS]

01:37:26   played kind of showing what's possible [TS]

01:37:28   with the system because when you get a [TS]

01:37:30   wii comes with wii sports and it'd be [TS]

01:37:31   like oh you can do this is what you do [TS]

01:37:33   with you wave your arms around like [TS]

01:37:34   crazy person and you can bowl and stuff [TS]

01:37:35   alright uh and so nintendo land is ok i [TS]

01:37:38   got this crazy system with this weird [TS]

01:37:39   control over the screen on it how is [TS]

01:37:41   this supposed to work what are you [TS]

01:37:42   supposed to do and mario does not show [TS]

01:37:44   that off because Mario was like good [TS]

01:37:45   samaria game have fun right it doesn't [TS]

01:37:47   show [TS]

01:37:48   all the millions of ways you can use [TS]

01:37:49   think but that's the role of [TS]

01:37:50   nintendoland but it's very different [TS]

01:37:54   than wii sports in terms of the game is [TS]

01:37:56   actually like so first big differences [TS]

01:37:57   that is far far less accessible than wii [TS]

01:37:59   sports was wii sports you know you had [TS]

01:38:02   some constructions that showed like hold [TS]

01:38:04   the thing like this and they'd show like [TS]

01:38:05   a stick figure saying roll this way or [TS]

01:38:07   whatever before the game started and you [TS]

01:38:10   could basically go yeah yeah yeah and [TS]

01:38:11   not pay too much tension it and anyone [TS]

01:38:13   be able to quickly figure it out like it [TS]

01:38:14   may be because they were analogies in [TS]

01:38:15   real life like tennis you don't have to [TS]

01:38:17   now to play tennis just swing your hand [TS]

01:38:18   it looks kind of like you're swinging at [TS]

01:38:19   a tennis thing and it would work and you [TS]

01:38:21   didn't have to spend time poring over [TS]

01:38:23   the instructions and people would pick [TS]

01:38:24   it up like that like you know if you've [TS]

01:38:26   ever been bowling before maybe it's a [TS]

01:38:27   little bit tricky to fare with the be [TS]

01:38:28   trigger but you know some some gamer [TS]

01:38:30   person who's there to assist says I [TS]

01:38:31   don't know you hold them be and then you [TS]

01:38:33   let it go once you figure that out it's [TS]

01:38:34   natural but you know especially things [TS]

01:38:36   like tennis perfectly natural right [TS]

01:38:37   Nintendo laying games are much more [TS]

01:38:39   complicated as much more sophisticated [TS]

01:38:41   instructors that you actually have to [TS]

01:38:42   read even if you're a gamer otherwise [TS]

01:38:44   you won't know what that you're doing [TS]

01:38:45   even if you do read them it's so [TS]

01:38:47   unnatural like their interactions that [TS]

01:38:50   even gamers aren't used to that you just [TS]

01:38:51   it takes a while for you to sort of [TS]

01:38:53   figure it out so you cannot take grandma [TS]

01:38:55   plop or down in front of an tenderloin [TS]

01:38:57   game and have her go nuts because it's [TS]

01:38:58   just it's too much I think too many too [TS]

01:39:03   many things move it too many moving [TS]

01:39:04   parts too much do you actually have to [TS]

01:39:06   read and the odds of a first time user [TS]

01:39:08   correctly guessing how a game works [TS]

01:39:10   without actually reading and paying [TS]

01:39:11   attention the instructions are very very [TS]

01:39:13   slim like if you say you just skip [TS]

01:39:14   through the instructions on the wii game [TS]

01:39:15   you could probably figure out tennis [TS]

01:39:17   without seeing them but if you skip to [TS]

01:39:18   the instructions of some of these games [TS]

01:39:19   you will have no idea what's going on [TS]

01:39:21   you will not have a fun experience you [TS]

01:39:22   will not figure it out even if you're a [TS]

01:39:23   gamer you'd be like let me try this this [TS]

01:39:25   because sometimes you just you just [TS]

01:39:26   can't guess what they're trying to make [TS]

01:39:28   you do because you've never played a [TS]

01:39:29   game like this before ah and once the [TS]

01:39:31   controls are understood it requires some [TS]

01:39:35   of the games require substantial gaming [TS]

01:39:36   experience to effectively use the [TS]

01:39:38   controls like you may understand how it [TS]

01:39:40   works but there's a lot of stuff to do [TS]

01:39:41   in multiple screens and triggers and [TS]

01:39:43   sticks and and some people using remotes [TS]

01:39:45   and where am I looking on the screen [TS]

01:39:46   you're supposed to look over there they [TS]

01:39:48   try to help you saying like you know if [TS]

01:39:50   you're looking in the wrong place [TS]

01:39:50   they'll be a messages says please look [TS]

01:39:52   down on the gamepad if you're like me [TS]

01:39:53   the gamepad you're not supposed to [TS]

01:39:54   assess please look up the TV screen but [TS]

01:39:55   uh having to see that message all the [TS]

01:39:58   time and not understanding what's going [TS]

01:39:59   on is not good like it's hard enough in [TS]

01:40:01   a split screen game I [TS]

01:40:02   you know mara kart double dash on the [TS]

01:40:04   gamecube or something where you you know [TS]

01:40:06   you play with somebody and you have to [TS]

01:40:08   tell your the upper left corner just [TS]

01:40:09   look over there don't look at my guy was [TS]

01:40:11   there looking at your guy and think [TS]

01:40:12   they're doing great when really they [TS]

01:40:13   just driving off into the water right [TS]

01:40:14   that's hard enough now double the number [TS]

01:40:16   of screens and some people have a remote [TS]

01:40:18   control and some people have a gamepad [TS]

01:40:19   and it's just yeah it's computing [TS]

01:40:21   sometimes you have to point the gamepad [TS]

01:40:22   at the TV screen which people are now [TS]

01:40:24   also not used to doing uh and you know [TS]

01:40:26   just understanding how control inputs [TS]

01:40:29   translate into motion in a 3d space is [TS]

01:40:31   hard enough like ignore everything just [TS]

01:40:32   have a TV screen and a controller just [TS]

01:40:34   getting people to understand how to [TS]

01:40:35   control a little dude in 3d space is [TS]

01:40:37   hard enough now add to that the [TS]

01:40:39   possibility of moving the controller [TS]

01:40:41   itself in 3d space which changes the [TS]

01:40:44   viewport on the on the gamepad screen [TS]

01:40:45   and now figure out how now when i move [TS]

01:40:48   the analog stick now that i've moved the [TS]

01:40:49   gamepad to change the viewport now what [TS]

01:40:51   does it's it's like another degree of [TS]

01:40:54   indirection in figuring stuff out and [TS]

01:40:56   for gamers it comes pretty easily but if [TS]

01:40:58   you if you don't if you have trouble [TS]

01:40:59   moving around a simple character 3d [TS]

01:41:01   space you are not going to like moving a [TS]

01:41:02   character on 3d space while moving the [TS]

01:41:04   gamepad around in 3d space which changes [TS]

01:41:05   your view of that space it will not be [TS]

01:41:08   good right now it's not an [TS]

01:41:09   insurmountable barrier by any means it [TS]

01:41:12   is just a huge contrast with the amazing [TS]

01:41:15   accessibility of wii sports in the way [TS]

01:41:16   where everyone was did the whole [TS]

01:41:18   families happily wave and wii remotes [TS]

01:41:19   around within five minutes that will not [TS]

01:41:21   happen with Nintendo land unless your [TS]

01:41:23   whole family is whole hardcore gamers so [TS]

01:41:26   there and I think they're there will be [TS]

01:41:27   a longer period of confusion and [TS]

01:41:29   possibly also frustration within ten [TS]

01:41:30   dolan and i'm not sure some people may [TS]

01:41:32   not last because if you try to show aunt [TS]

01:41:34   sue how to play nintendo land and it's [TS]

01:41:36   frustrating she's got like a timer and [TS]

01:41:38   like three minutes goes by she's like [TS]

01:41:39   yeah you know not for me right it [TS]

01:41:41   doesn't if it doesn't become within a [TS]

01:41:43   certain threshold then that's it i don't [TS]

01:41:45   think this is bad for nintendo [TS]

01:41:46   necessarily i'm just characterizing [TS]

01:41:47   intend Elena's not like we sports uh as [TS]

01:41:50   for showing what's possible the system [TS]

01:41:52   in tenderloin does a really good job uh [TS]

01:41:54   because it tries out many many many [TS]

01:41:57   different possibilities now certainly [TS]

01:41:58   not all the ones but it shows the range [TS]

01:42:00   of what you might be able to do [TS]

01:42:01   unfortunately many of the possibilities [TS]

01:42:03   explored don't result in games that I [TS]

01:42:06   want to play you know it's a lot of [TS]

01:42:07   experiments and some of them are failed [TS]

01:42:08   experience some of them maybe I consider [TS]

01:42:10   cautionary tales like you could do this [TS]

01:42:12   but does it make a fun game actually no [TS]

01:42:14   it does not so [TS]

01:42:15   maybe third party game makers don't do [TS]

01:42:16   this because it's not fun but I think [TS]

01:42:19   that's an important role to play like [TS]

01:42:20   show all the different things you can do [TS]

01:42:21   the interaction i find most off-putting [TS]

01:42:24   is any game that requires me to look at [TS]

01:42:28   the television screen and the gamepad [TS]

01:42:29   like interleaved look at the television [TS]

01:42:31   screen now like while you're playing now [TS]

01:42:33   if you look at the television screen now [TS]

01:42:34   to look at the gamepad now I've looked [TS]

01:42:35   at the elegant screen back to the game [TS]

01:42:36   pet they use it a lot to heighten [TS]

01:42:38   tension where you have to like take your [TS]

01:42:40   eyes off something briefly to look at [TS]

01:42:42   the other screen and you know that when [TS]

01:42:43   you're taking your eyes off something [TS]

01:42:44   bad could be happening but you have to [TS]

01:42:45   do something on the other screen all the [TS]

01:42:47   while worried that you're missing some [TS]

01:42:48   piece of information is only visible on [TS]

01:42:50   the screen you're not looking at it [TS]

01:42:51   that's fine it does increase tension but [TS]

01:42:54   maybe I'm an old man now but the [TS]

01:42:56   constantly changing your focal distance [TS]

01:42:58   is not not friendly to old people eyes [TS]

01:43:01   right now the constant look not [TS]

01:43:02   something you look forward to doing it [TS]

01:43:04   actually makes you feel tired when you [TS]

01:43:06   think about doing that yeah and like [TS]

01:43:08   maybe young people it's not a big deal [TS]

01:43:09   to them but for all people it is a big [TS]

01:43:11   deal it's not comfortable to constantly [TS]

01:43:13   change your focal distance it's just not [TS]

01:43:14   uh so that you know that makes those [TS]

01:43:18   type of games you know I give those with [TS]

01:43:19   thumb down do not make me during [TS]

01:43:21   real-time game place which one's going [TS]

01:43:23   to that it's fine if you wanna use it [TS]

01:43:24   for like an inventory or a map screen [TS]

01:43:25   where it's like task-based then the game [TS]

01:43:28   is paused when you're going down to it [TS]

01:43:29   like that type of thing would be fine [TS]

01:43:30   but you know real-time things combing in [TS]

01:43:33   one direction or the other on screen I [TS]

01:43:34   don't think what is that word chroming [TS]

01:43:37   know anyway there's a word that I mean [TS]

01:43:39   that sounds something like that but it's [TS]

01:43:41   not that word moving around on the [TS]

01:43:42   screen I don't want to be added to add [TS]

01:43:46   to this to be constantly refocusing my [TS]

01:43:48   eyes it makes me not feel good so thumbs [TS]

01:43:51   down on that Oh for me two types of [TS]

01:43:55   games work to the best with the set up [TS]

01:43:57   the first for the games where the second [TS]

01:44:01   screen was used to create an imbalance [TS]

01:44:02   and information where the person with [TS]

01:44:04   the gamepad screen could see things and [TS]

01:44:06   new things that the people who are [TS]

01:44:07   looking in television didn't know or [TS]

01:44:08   nice person right that works really well [TS]

01:44:11   because no one has to look for one [TS]

01:44:12   screen to go you either play the whole [TS]

01:44:13   time looking to the TV you play the [TS]

01:44:14   whole time looking at the gamepad ah and [TS]

01:44:16   that imbalance and information it's the [TS]

01:44:19   same type of imbalance information you [TS]

01:44:20   have an online multiplayer game only you [TS]

01:44:22   can have it with the whole family [TS]

01:44:23   sitting in the same room which is great [TS]

01:44:25   so there's a whole bunch of multiplayer [TS]

01:44:27   chasing capture games that use this [TS]

01:44:28   mechanic [TS]

01:44:29   and there they are very fun surprisingly [TS]

01:44:31   fun for how simple they are some of them [TS]

01:44:33   are even just on one screen where [TS]

01:44:34   nothing actually moves like you just [TS]

01:44:36   filling your television with one board [TS]

01:44:37   looks like a maze and that's the whole [TS]

01:44:40   game those are surprisingly fun simply [TS]

01:44:42   done with the imbalance information the [TS]

01:44:44   other type of game it was very [TS]

01:44:45   successful was the time that uses the [TS]

01:44:47   second screen to allow multiplayer [TS]

01:44:50   cooperative or a competitive gameplay [TS]

01:44:51   without having to split the television [TS]

01:44:53   screen and it may not seem like a big [TS]

01:44:55   deal was like all right well so used to [TS]

01:44:57   split screen multiplayer who cares you [TS]

01:44:58   all find so you get your whole screen [TS]

01:44:59   back to yourself is that really that big [TS]

01:45:00   of a deal I think it is first of all [TS]

01:45:03   because I think split screen is very [TS]

01:45:04   unfriendly even experienced players can [TS]

01:45:06   find themselves accidentally thinking [TS]

01:45:07   that there are the other side of the [TS]

01:45:09   screen and forgetting which side they [TS]

01:45:10   were on and thinking that they're doing [TS]

01:45:11   great when really they're you know [TS]

01:45:12   driving off into a ditch uh and seeing [TS]

01:45:15   the full screen for your stuff is good [TS]

01:45:17   but also because you can see you know [TS]

01:45:19   again you can have the imbalance [TS]

01:45:20   information for competitive games you [TS]

01:45:22   don't want the other person's to see [TS]

01:45:23   that you're sneaking up on him and you [TS]

01:45:24   know Goldeneye or whatever now you can [TS]

01:45:26   actually have that experience both of [TS]

01:45:27   you sitting in the same room not having [TS]

01:45:29   to be on pcs or bring in some weird [TS]

01:45:30   setup or whatever slang one console [TS]

01:45:32   system but having real true two-player [TS]

01:45:35   game where you both have the proper you [TS]

01:45:37   know multiplayer experience now as a [TS]

01:45:44   bonus a lot of these games also track [TS]

01:45:47   the motion of the gamepad as if were you [TS]

01:45:50   pour it into a larger world so the [TS]

01:45:51   person who uses the gamepad actually [TS]

01:45:53   gets a different control experience [TS]

01:45:55   because it's not you know the person who [TS]

01:45:57   is playing the regular thing maybe has a [TS]

01:45:59   camera control or something like that [TS]

01:46:00   but the person who is playing the game [TS]

01:46:01   pad is two analog sticks but also can [TS]

01:46:03   just by moving the gamepad controller [TS]

01:46:05   look in a different direction the best [TS]

01:46:07   games that allowed you to do this type [TS]

01:46:09   of thing also let you move the camera [TS]

01:46:10   with one of the analog sticks and again [TS]

01:46:13   it's getting its like expert games well [TS]

01:46:14   okay to change where I'm looking I can [TS]

01:46:16   actually you know move the gamepad [TS]

01:46:18   around to be facing in their direction [TS]

01:46:20   but I can also move the camera with the [TS]

01:46:22   thumb stick and you know this this [TS]

01:46:26   combination would be this is kind of [TS]

01:46:27   expert controls but this combination [TS]

01:46:28   being able to change the camera with [TS]

01:46:30   both the stick and a thing that's [TS]

01:46:31   essential to keep you from ending up [TS]

01:46:33   facing backwards basically like if you [TS]

01:46:35   want to turn around look behind you but [TS]

01:46:37   if you don't realize that you can [TS]

01:46:38   control the camera with thumb sticks [TS]

01:46:39   you're gonna find yourself sitting on [TS]

01:46:40   the couch twisting your body entirely [TS]

01:46:41   around backwards like it's not come [TS]

01:46:43   bonus weird right so they have to give [TS]

01:46:45   you they have to give you a way to [TS]

01:46:46   combine them so that may seem like it's [TS]

01:46:48   bad it's like well so am I supposed to [TS]

01:46:50   look with the camera shy use a thumb [TS]

01:46:52   stick maybe I'll just you know ignore [TS]

01:46:54   the stupid gamepad crap and I'll just [TS]

01:46:55   use it the way the way you would [TS]

01:46:58   normally use it with you know I'm used [TS]

01:47:00   to first-person shooters on on a console [TS]

01:47:03   so I'm just gonna control my camera [TS]

01:47:05   control where I'm aiming with with the [TS]

01:47:06   analog stick is fine with me i don't [TS]

01:47:08   could do anything i'm not going to twist [TS]

01:47:09   my body around at all right and i'm not [TS]

01:47:11   a fan of first-person aiming with analog [TS]

01:47:13   sticks like they have in console games [TS]

01:47:15   uh I find you know aiming that way is [TS]

01:47:18   terrible and the mouse and keyboard is [TS]

01:47:20   better right uh and so when I was using [TS]

01:47:23   this thing with a camera control to [TS]

01:47:24   places like oh well once i figure that [TS]

01:47:26   out why am I ever gonna like you know [TS]

01:47:28   turn my torso to look in a slightly [TS]

01:47:31   different direction it seems insane why [TS]

01:47:32   would I just use the thumbstick well the [TS]

01:47:34   reason you wouldn't is because aiming by [TS]

01:47:37   moving where the gamepad is not for the [TS]

01:47:40   big moves for the small fine-tune move [TS]

01:47:42   yes way more precise and accurate it's [TS]

01:47:45   not mouse and keyboard accurate but it's [TS]

01:47:47   really close yeah it's so much better [TS]

01:47:48   than using the stick and if you don't [TS]

01:47:50   realize that cuz you're like an old [TS]

01:47:51   grumpy gamer like the first time you do [TS]

01:47:52   it you like I don't like this I can pick [TS]

01:47:55   these guys off by dusting up this small [TS]

01:47:56   movement so I use the thumb stick for [TS]

01:47:59   the gross movements of like I want to [TS]

01:48:01   look to my left now and when I'm aiming [TS]

01:48:03   i'm using and the gamepad the gyros that [TS]

01:48:05   we talked about with all those six you [TS]

01:48:06   know six different accelerometers [TS]

01:48:07   wherever the heck it was it is rock [TS]

01:48:09   solid it is very responsive no matter [TS]

01:48:12   where I point the thing I have never had [TS]

01:48:13   to recalibrate or reorient it except for [TS]

01:48:15   like the you know during the game start [TS]

01:48:16   up it feels really good so whatever they [TS]

01:48:19   did inside this thing to make it since [TS]

01:48:20   it really feels like you know I could [TS]

01:48:22   just move it where I want and it's very [TS]

01:48:24   accurate and feels really good like [TS]

01:48:26   Metroid blast is the game that combines [TS]

01:48:27   the most of these things because uh it [TS]

01:48:30   metro a blast i give you a warning to be [TS]

01:48:32   anything like this is the nintendo land [TS]

01:48:33   game most geared for advanced players [TS]

01:48:35   like so they warn you going in like [TS]

01:48:37   don't maybe try to get grandma to play [TS]

01:48:39   metroid blast but it is my favorite game [TS]

01:48:42   and i like to play as the ship you can [TS]

01:48:44   play as samus's ship and you play on the [TS]

01:48:46   gamepad and you can fly around level and [TS]

01:48:48   everyone else is on foot and they either [TS]

01:48:50   they divide up the screen if there's [TS]

01:48:51   more than one of them and the ship is [TS]

01:48:53   controlled with both analog sticks with [TS]

01:48:55   a kind of weird arrangement [TS]

01:48:57   one stick makes you with higher and [TS]

01:48:59   lower like altitude and lets you twist [TS]

01:49:01   the ship left and right the other stick [TS]

01:49:03   moves the ship forward and backwards and [TS]

01:49:05   strafe seeeeee I don't know how about [TS]

01:49:06   that word came from like doom I guess it [TS]

01:49:08   really means no does it I don't know I [TS]

01:49:10   can never decide if strafe is accurate [TS]

01:49:12   but everyone who plays for a certain [TS]

01:49:13   games knows what I mean so the other [TS]

01:49:15   stick you know it translates you [TS]

01:49:16   laterally without twisting right and so [TS]

01:49:19   you have two sticks to control a thing [TS]

01:49:21   in 3d space and you can pull off some [TS]

01:49:22   pretty sophisticated maneuvers once you [TS]

01:49:24   can get your head wrap your head around [TS]

01:49:25   the controls and the aiming is done by [TS]

01:49:28   positioning the camera with you know [TS]

01:49:30   with the gamepad by looking in one [TS]

01:49:32   direction or another I mean you can also [TS]

01:49:34   aim by you know moving left to right [TS]

01:49:37   twisting your ship left to right but you [TS]

01:49:39   can also be aiming in a direction that's [TS]

01:49:40   slightly different from the direction [TS]

01:49:41   you're traveling so it's a very [TS]

01:49:42   complicated control screaming you can [TS]

01:49:44   choose some pretty amazing things with [TS]

01:49:45   it and it's fun game or you know it's [TS]

01:49:47   all these games are not let's not like [TS]

01:49:49   real Metro supposed to like you're an [TS]

01:49:50   amusement park and you dress up like [TS]

01:49:51   Metroid and you fight against [TS]

01:49:53   animatronic versions of Metroid enemies [TS]

01:49:55   which are sort of comical wooden block [TS]

01:49:57   creations that resemble you know that [TS]

01:50:00   looks like cray but it's not actually [TS]

01:50:01   great ah that's a fun game and I like [TS]

01:50:04   being able to fly on the level you can [TS]

01:50:05   pick up the little guys and they can [TS]

01:50:06   grapple onto you and you can you know [TS]

01:50:08   swoop down and you know get power-ups [TS]

01:50:10   for them and drop them off and save [TS]

01:50:12   people who are injured and you only lose [TS]

01:50:13   the game when everyone loses all there [TS]

01:50:16   you know they have a collective health [TS]

01:50:17   bar for everybody combined when my son [TS]

01:50:22   was playing on his own he chose to play [TS]

01:50:23   the Zelda battle quest game which is [TS]

01:50:27   sort of kind of like the Zelda fide [TS]

01:50:29   version of the sword game from wii [TS]

01:50:32   sports resort where you don't you know [TS]

01:50:34   it's on Rails they move you for you [TS]

01:50:35   don't you don't control where how you [TS]

01:50:37   wall right right hope you stop or go and [TS]

01:50:39   you the gamepad shoots arrows and the [TS]

01:50:42   Wii Remote fights with the sword huh so [TS]

01:50:45   intend to land overall I would say if [TS]

01:50:48   you have a wii u you should get nintendo [TS]

01:50:49   land if only to see all the things that [TS]

01:50:51   are possible and i guarantee you will [TS]

01:50:53   find at least one or two games that are [TS]

01:50:55   worth the purchase nothing maybe no not [TS]

01:50:56   worth 60 bucks maybe be better if it was [TS]

01:50:58   like 30 bucks but if it's a packing game [TS]

01:50:59   that's why you should get the black one [TS]

01:51:01   so why everyone should get the black one [TS]

01:51:02   ah I give him 10 to let a thumbs up and [TS]

01:51:04   if you like to do Mario's I suppose I [TS]

01:51:06   give New Super Mario Bros u a thumbs [TS]

01:51:08   upses well [TS]

01:51:10   one frustrating aspect of the gamepad as [TS]

01:51:13   we talked about this before the two to [TS]

01:51:15   five hour battery life that really does [TS]

01:51:17   end up being a problem it's not so much [TS]

01:51:19   that a single person is going to play [TS]

01:51:21   you know we--you for two to five hours [TS]

01:51:24   because you know you hear your mother [TS]

01:51:25   scolding are you playing that game for [TS]

01:51:26   five hours you're gonna stop right [TS]

01:51:27   although that can certainly happen when [TS]

01:51:29   you have you know long-running games [TS]

01:51:30   that's just something the gamers do is [TS]

01:51:32   go on this gaming binges the social [TS]

01:51:33   gamers who don't have young kids or [TS]

01:51:35   families because they can actually have [TS]

01:51:36   that ability in other words gamers ya [TS]

01:51:39   know i'm a gamer and I have it right but [TS]

01:51:41   but you know even in the case of my [TS]

01:51:43   house while the kids running around like [TS]

01:51:45   on that first day we got the thing set [TS]

01:51:46   up it wasn't just me playing like [TS]

01:51:47   everyone was taking a turn right [TS]

01:51:49   everyone gets a turn with a thing and by [TS]

01:51:51   the end of the whole family having a [TS]

01:51:52   turn you know two and a half hour three [TS]

01:51:54   hours go by and your battery is dead and [TS]

01:51:56   you know someone still wants to be [TS]

01:51:58   playing and it comes with a charger like [TS]

01:52:01   a charging cradle that you can stick it [TS]

01:52:03   in to charge it and the charging cradle [TS]

01:52:05   is attached with like a detachable cable [TS]

01:52:07   you can detach from the cradle and [TS]

01:52:08   attached directly to the gamepad so you [TS]

01:52:10   can and it comes like a really long [TS]

01:52:12   skinny table so you can be charging it [TS]

01:52:14   while you're using it's like it's clear [TS]

01:52:15   they realize the battery life was not [TS]

01:52:16   sufficient so they needed a way for you [TS]

01:52:19   to be able to plug it in and continue [TS]

01:52:21   playing your game of course the cord [TS]

01:52:23   that comes with is just a bit too short [TS]

01:52:25   to reach my couch of course it is it [TS]

01:52:27   always is but it's clear that they they [TS]

01:52:30   should they realize that battery life [TS]

01:52:31   would be an issue ah and you know [TS]

01:52:35   remember when we did the look at the I [TS]

01:52:36   fix it we you tear down I put this [TS]

01:52:38   picture in relation though and they [TS]

01:52:40   showed that inside the battery [TS]

01:52:41   compartment on the gamepad the [TS]

01:52:44   rechargeable battery that ships with it [TS]

01:52:46   barely fills half of the available space [TS]

01:52:47   in the battery compartment ah and they [TS]

01:52:50   had like why why that's a sin it's a sin [TS]

01:52:53   I was trying to figure out what why they [TS]

01:52:55   were using it but having used the [TS]

01:52:56   gamepad for a while now I'm no longer so [TS]

01:52:59   quick to dismiss the idea that was done [TS]

01:53:00   for weight saving purposes because I [TS]

01:53:02   remember in the show I said I don't [TS]

01:53:03   think they did a save weight because [TS]

01:53:04   like you know why would they do that but [TS]

01:53:06   like you do end up holding this thing up [TS]

01:53:07   a lot and it's pretty lightweight the [TS]

01:53:09   way it is and maybe doubling the size of [TS]

01:53:10   the battery would make it especially for [TS]

01:53:12   kids hands it's not a big deal for me [TS]

01:53:13   but I can imagine a little kid holding [TS]

01:53:15   this game thing up for two hours their [TS]

01:53:17   arms might get tired uh so I I mean cost [TS]

01:53:21   was my guess the last time we talked [TS]

01:53:23   about this now I [TS]

01:53:24   combination of cost and weight all that [TS]

01:53:26   said as soon as someone makes a larger [TS]

01:53:28   heavier higher capacity battery I'm [TS]

01:53:29   gonna buy one and stick it in this thing [TS]

01:53:31   because you know my arms don't get that [TS]

01:53:32   tired but it is it weird and interesting [TS]

01:53:35   trade-off kind of like the ipad 3 where [TS]

01:53:38   you have to you know you can't get [TS]

01:53:40   everything and so they decided to [TS]

01:53:42   sacrifice battery life for weight and [TS]

01:53:44   cost and probably not a good move like [TS]

01:53:48   it just double the battery life it would [TS]

01:53:49   be perfectly acceptable the way it is [TS]

01:53:51   now the batteries you can be running out [TS]

01:53:53   and people and people are going to be [TS]

01:53:54   sad so overall overall comments I think [TS]

01:53:59   the wii u shows a lot of promise I think [TS]

01:54:02   the games that are good on the gamepad [TS]

01:54:03   are really good I think they're good in [TS]

01:54:05   ways that other single screen consoles [TS]

01:54:07   can't duplicate which is that's exactly [TS]

01:54:10   what Nintendo once they're not as [TS]

01:54:12   accessible as the as the wii games were [TS]

01:54:16   so maybe it won't make them a mass [TS]

01:54:17   market success but they have [TS]

01:54:18   successfully made a game console capable [TS]

01:54:22   of things that are fun that the other [TS]

01:54:24   game consoles can't do right I do fear [TS]

01:54:26   that a lot of my favorite franchise [TS]

01:54:28   games might be burdened with the bad [TS]

01:54:30   aspects of gamepad control that I don't [TS]

01:54:32   like I don't want to get the neck sell [TS]

01:54:33   the game and have to constantly looking [TS]

01:54:34   for one screen to the other in real-time [TS]

01:54:36   combat I'll be very upset with that [TS]

01:54:37   right I in fact I hope the new zelda [TS]

01:54:39   game that comes out HD does not even use [TS]

01:54:41   the gamepad except for like map [TS]

01:54:43   management inventory or something and [TS]

01:54:44   like down times you know I'd rather yeah [TS]

01:54:47   that's that's a big fear of mine ville [TS]

01:54:49   but no sense worrying about that because [TS]

01:54:50   off in the future in the end I I have to [TS]

01:54:54   think that high definition may actually [TS]

01:54:56   be that we use most important attribute [TS]

01:54:58   like I was one of the people who said [TS]

01:54:59   yeah the wii's standard definition but [TS]

01:55:01   it's not a big deal and it never really [TS]

01:55:02   bothered me like I have a ps3 connected [TS]

01:55:04   to my TV and I have a mac so it's not [TS]

01:55:06   like I'm unfamiliar with what no you [TS]

01:55:08   know high definition gaining looks like [TS]

01:55:09   cuz I knew what I was missing but it was [TS]

01:55:11   like not a big deal now that I can [TS]

01:55:12   finally see you intend those properties [TS]

01:55:14   in high definition you know I don't want [TS]

01:55:17   to go back ever we need to just close [TS]

01:55:19   the door on standard definition and you [TS]

01:55:21   know continue moving forward and that [TS]

01:55:23   that it's like a rising tide lifts all [TS]

01:55:25   boats every game every genre just [TS]

01:55:27   becomes way better and better things to [TS]

01:55:29   be impossible they can use smaller text [TS]

01:55:30   more details when you do splitscreen [TS]

01:55:32   it's not as blurry I see more detail in [TS]

01:55:33   your split screen now that I've seen it [TS]

01:55:36   I crave more [TS]

01:55:37   and and finally we're kind of let's [TS]

01:55:41   enjoy the spot last we are in a and an [TS]

01:55:43   amazing brief very brief golden age [TS]

01:55:46   where Nintendo's console is not [TS]

01:55:48   embarrassingly under power because right [TS]

01:55:50   now the consoles that you can buy in a [TS]

01:55:53   store are the wii u the ps3 and xbox 360 [TS]

01:55:55   and they all have just about comparable [TS]

01:55:59   power it said that the wii u is apple's [TS]

01:56:01   next generation console and as soon as [TS]

01:56:02   the ps4 and Xbox 720 or how they call it [TS]

01:56:05   come out then the way you will be back [TS]

01:56:06   to sucking but at least it's HD and for [TS]

01:56:08   right now we have a brief period of time [TS]

01:56:10   where everyone is on a level playing [TS]

01:56:11   field and Nintendo does not have a [TS]

01:56:13   whiskey console they can't play all the [TS]

01:56:15   cool modern games that we want so enjoy [TS]

01:56:17   it while last intendo fans so i have to [TS]

01:56:21   have to give it an overall thumbs up or [TS]

01:56:22   down i give it a thumbs up there's [TS]

01:56:24   potential potential yeah that's your [TS]

01:56:28   final word I found a word on the wii u [TS]

01:56:32   I'm not glad I'm very glad that we have [TS]

01:56:37   it I do not regret this non purchase or [TS]

01:56:39   this gift at all I I appreciate it [TS]

01:56:41   greatly I look forward to lots more fun [TS]

01:56:44   with this device man that's all you got [TS]

01:56:50   to say that's not that's not your like [TS]

01:56:52   it's enough that's enough will you will [TS]

01:56:53   you be permanently retiring you're the [TS]

01:56:55   old we I mean you kind of have to but I [TS]

01:56:57   mean there are you happy with that I [TS]

01:56:59   have to keep it around because I like to [TS]

01:57:02   play GameCube games neon sup so dumb [TS]

01:57:03   ideas so you're gonna keep it aren't you [TS]

01:57:05   it's i still have my gamecube welcome to [TS]

01:57:07   my TV i have three generation of [TS]

01:57:08   nintendo console hooked up like i guess [TS]

01:57:10   i won't have a fourth so when the next [TS]

01:57:12   one comes out i'll have to retire the [TS]

01:57:13   gamecube but i still want a way to play [TS]

01:57:15   gamecube games like i can still play [TS]

01:57:16   nintendo 64 games if they're available [TS]

01:57:18   on Louise you know virtual console thing [TS]

01:57:21   so i play mario 64 but it don't have an [TS]

01:57:23   antenna 64 hooked up well I want to [TS]

01:57:24   still play marriott Double Dash and the [TS]

01:57:26   original monkey ball uh but i can't play [TS]

01:57:29   them on the wii u because doesn't have a [TS]

01:57:30   place to put in Game Cube ports you know [TS]

01:57:32   so I'll keep them running as long as I [TS]

01:57:35   can all right I wanted to him to have [TS]

01:57:41   time for your questions but I didn't [TS]

01:57:42   maybe I'll reserve some time in a final [TS]

01:57:43   show underneath 30 minutes great how you [TS]

01:57:45   get it almost exactly like a Hyundai [TS]

01:57:47   it's 119 minutes right now figure after [TS]

01:57:50   almost 100 of the [TS]

01:57:51   Stan I better you know he's getting a [TS]

01:57:54   feel for it all right so we have one [TS]

01:57:59   more of these things left in to do this [TS]

01:58:01   is episode 99 100 will be the final [TS]

01:58:04   episode and that will take place you [TS]

01:58:21   thinking she'll be able to join in join [TS]

01:58:26   in with us John already knows the topic [TS]

01:58:29   he already knows the title the show's [TS]

01:58:31   already been written he was written at [TS]

01:58:32   the same time as the toilet I don't know [TS]

01:58:34   the title someone cept I don't think of [TS]

01:58:36   the titles already been decided that you [TS]

01:58:37   said that no I have many options for the [TS]

01:58:40   title many suggestions many people have [TS]

01:58:42   suggested things you suggested things [TS]

01:58:43   other people I have a little section of [TS]

01:58:45   my notes that list like five possible [TS]

01:58:47   tiles I just know what the show is gonna [TS]

01:58:48   be about there there are many titles [TS]

01:58:49   like it but this one is mine yeah so [TS]

01:58:54   that's it for this week though no you'd [TS]

01:58:56   it has to be the Syracuse County one cuz [TS]

01:58:59   you promised one more the title are we [TS]

01:59:01   going right to the title selection no [TS]

01:59:02   I'm saying for next week cuz this week [TS]

01:59:04   you're gonna it's gonna be about [TS]

01:59:05   something else you don't know what this [TS]

01:59:06   two big style is gonna be honey we [TS]

01:59:07   looked at it yet and also the bridges of [TS]

01:59:10   Syracuse to County because it has to be [TS]

01:59:12   said the bridges of siracusa County [TS]

01:59:13   siracusa County that's fine for Buddha [TS]

01:59:17   that's fine for John Siracusa what else [TS]

01:59:22   should I say cuz if I we don't say it [TS]

01:59:24   during the show we can't use it some [TS]

01:59:25   Chinese don't know me that's that that's [TS]

01:59:26   don't you remember that's the exception [TS]

01:59:28   I don't think you said the bridges of [TS]

01:59:30   Surak using well I said it show yeah [TS]

01:59:32   that's that that rule does not apply [TS]

01:59:33   force R coos county show us because the [TS]

01:59:35   original one was the exception to the [TS]

01:59:37   rule it did not I allowed it to go [TS]

01:59:39   through hmm even though it wasn't said [TS]

01:59:41   on the show so you don't have to say [TS]

01:59:43   these things Michelle we will be able to [TS]

01:59:44   pick titles to this show without regard [TS]

01:59:47   to what we said on the show in boobs [TS]

01:59:48   rube says that the mines were off by [TS]

01:59:50   week if they thought the world was [TS]

01:59:51   ending for the penultimate episode of [TS]

01:59:53   hyper critical yeah well you know it's [TS]

01:59:56   tough to make predictions that far in [TS]

01:59:57   advance about about my back you [TS]
