Top Four 18: Childhood Console Games 🎮

00:00:00   so welcome back to top for everybody

00:00:01   this week we are talking about this is

00:00:04   this was a tricky category to define but

00:00:07   we decided to talk about our top four

00:00:09   childhood console games yeah because we

00:00:12   wanted to restrict it in some way but

00:00:15   our choices were kind of being tricky

00:00:18   and unrestricted because we wanted to

00:00:21   jump around between different consoles

00:00:23   so we didn't want to pick specifically

00:00:25   consoles because I don't think we could

00:00:26   pick four out of like every single one

00:00:28   although I guess if you twisted our arm

00:00:30   I guess we'd have to but since it's our

00:00:34   show we're making up the rules and we

00:00:36   are picking a whole bunch of stuff that

00:00:38   I guess ranged from our childhood gaming

00:00:41   experiences of the late 80s through the

00:00:44   90s kind of into the time when we kind

00:00:47   of stopped playing games because we got

00:00:49   like friends and stuff well I mean it

00:00:54   for me like it you know because we're

00:00:56   shipping this to console game

00:00:57   specifically so this kind of this era

00:01:00   for me ended mostly when I went to

00:01:02   college but you know and I started

00:01:04   really just playing computer games and

00:01:05   buddy that even bled into like late high

00:01:07   school that the last console I had as a

00:01:09   child was a Sega Genesis like that one

00:01:12   console really we've always had console

00:01:14   games pretty much all of them because my

00:01:16   dad really liked playing right so he was

00:01:19   cool with getting them we never had to

00:01:21   like wait really for Christmas that I

00:01:23   can remember they just were kind of

00:01:25   there all the time advantage to having a

00:01:28   parent who was also into the game but

00:01:31   yeah I kind of fell out of them when I

00:01:33   started going to high school and getting

00:01:35   really busy with clubs and stuff to do

00:01:38   that I just couldn't play and then my

00:01:39   brother was coming up he's five years

00:01:41   younger than me so he started playing a

00:01:43   lot of like the Nintendo 64 games so I

00:01:46   didn't really get that into though it's

00:01:49   because he was playing them the majority

00:01:51   at the time so I actually had a lot of

00:01:54   time on n64 so I guess like all my

00:01:56   friends had the n64 but I didn't so I

00:01:59   didn't get into like friend gaming until

00:02:01   Starcraft and so we started playing

00:02:04   computer games with friends ta so much

00:02:07   better than Starcraft all right so you

00:02:09   didn't know you picked the wrong team on

00:02:11   that one I didn't know it just happened

00:02:13   to me

00:02:14   not true anyway so so basically we're

00:02:17   talking about like our top four console

00:02:19   games from roughly the 8 and 16-bit era

00:02:23   but I actually have I don't know if you

00:02:26   want to start with things that didn't

00:02:28   make your list quite I have two

00:02:30   honorable mentions that I wanted to oh I

00:02:31   have a bunch of honorable mentions too

00:02:33   but before we say that I think that we

00:02:34   wanted to say that because we came to

00:02:36   this category because our son is four

00:02:39   now well four and a half and he's been

00:02:43   really enjoying watching us play through

00:02:45   a whole bunch of these older games he

00:02:47   watched us play through the Mario's the

00:02:50   Sonics the Zelda's and we can only

00:02:54   emulate up to Super Nintendo so I think

00:02:57   that that is why we are kind of picking

00:03:00   this games that we have recently been

00:03:02   remembering because we've been having

00:03:04   fun reliving them with him yeah it was

00:03:07   really into them he is really into them

00:03:09   he can't quite play them yet but he is

00:03:11   an avid watcher which I'm very proud of

00:03:13   and it's nice that you know playing

00:03:15   through these old games it's really nice

00:03:16   to to rediscover them now to kind of

00:03:19   look back on them with it with a

00:03:20   critical adult I also and to really see

00:03:23   how great most of them are and they

00:03:26   really you know these not not every game

00:03:28   that we've like you know I have a whole

00:03:30   lot of Genesis and Super Nintendo and

00:03:32   NES roms that we play here on Apple TV

00:03:35   emulator and many of them don't hold up

00:03:39   at all many of them you know are in the

00:03:41   past and should stay in the past but but

00:03:43   some of the really great ones are are

00:03:44   still really great even by today's you

00:03:47   know they don't the graphics don't look

00:03:48   as good but you stopped paying attention

00:03:50   to that after the first 30 seconds and

00:03:52   then you just enjoy how fun the game is

00:03:53   and it's it's pretty great

00:03:55   alright so honorable mentions the ones

00:03:57   that didn't make your list I have to

00:03:58   hear do you want to start it should I go

00:04:01   I've been flip-flopping around my number

00:04:03   three and four anyway and I have a whole

00:04:04   bunch of honorable mentions one is going

00:04:07   to confuse and stupefy you okay the

00:04:11   other ones you'll probably you might

00:04:14   have the same one I don't know we

00:04:16   haven't talked about it yet I think it's

00:04:17   something that we should emulate with

00:04:19   Adam actually oh not not mine neither of

00:04:22   my honorable mentions should be emulated

00:04:23   with Adam one of mine definitely should

00:04:25   okay so I guess I'll bring that one up

00:04:27   for

00:04:27   f zero that's a good one yeah which one

00:04:30   the n64 the Super Nintendo the one words

00:04:33   like do nu nu nu nu nu you firmly refer

00:04:39   to the Super Nintendo one that yes yeah

00:04:45   Super Nintendo is probably when you're

00:04:46   talking about yeah is it Super Nintendo

00:04:48   yeah I guess it was the same one with

00:04:50   the super scope yeah yeah Super Nintendo

00:04:52   yeah yeah yeah the n64 one was was also

00:04:55   pretty good but most people didn't have

00:04:57   it it seemed like everybody had the

00:04:59   Super in them yeah I'm picturing the

00:05:00   cartridge right now and it was a Super

00:05:01   Nintendo one it was awesome my brother

00:05:03   and I and my dad played that game a lot

00:05:05   on weekends it was so much fun and I can

00:05:09   pretty much remember all of the theme

00:05:10   songs you're like coming up to this door

00:05:14   I could I hear that game it was great it

00:05:17   was a really fun racing game it was

00:05:20   unlike anything that we've seen very

00:05:22   often at the time and the music was

00:05:25   super catchy and it was a little tricky

00:05:27   I liked going through all the power-ups

00:05:29   and making the jumps and stuff so it was

00:05:33   a great game for me because I remember

00:05:35   with having fun with my family and I

00:05:37   also think it was a pretty fantastic

00:05:39   racing game yeah I mean I I didn't have

00:05:42   a lot of time with it because as I

00:05:43   mentioned I only had a Genesis for most

00:05:45   of my for all my childhood I really

00:05:48   until I went to college and played pcs

00:05:50   for a while and after college I started

00:05:51   buying a couple old consoles but we know

00:05:53   during during my whole childhood I could

00:05:55   only play non Genesis games at friends

00:05:58   houses so I was really limited by what

00:06:00   my friends had I'm willing to play with

00:06:01   me so that's why I like I have seen

00:06:03   almost none of the single-player

00:06:04   Nintendo games like the RPGs and

00:06:06   everything I've seen very little of

00:06:07   those yeah so most of my Nintendo

00:06:09   experience is the multiplayer stuff and

00:06:11   the Mario games everybody had of course

00:06:12   yeah we owned f-zero and like a whole

00:06:14   bunch of others and of course you know

00:06:17   the big popular ones of course but we

00:06:19   also rented games a lot at the video

00:06:22   store it was an expensive luxury we

00:06:24   didn't have it we would you know we

00:06:26   would go and we would get a family movie

00:06:29   or something for the weekend and then

00:06:31   but you know when my brother and I were

00:06:32   both old enough to play these games that

00:06:34   we would we would rent a game for the

00:06:37   weekend as well which was also really

00:06:39   fun so we got to play all of like the

00:06:41   simpsons games that why would you buy

00:06:43   them but they were super fun to rent so

00:06:46   bad yeah it was like it was like renting

00:06:48   all like the garbage candy and if you

00:06:50   got to just like get a sugar high on

00:06:52   them for the weekend and then send them

00:06:54   back because no one actually wants to

00:06:55   finish those games no nobody even wants

00:06:58   dark all right so my number my first

00:07:01   honorable mention that didn't quite make

00:07:02   my list ties into what I was just saying

00:07:05   but only having a Genesis it is Street

00:07:07   Fighter 2 for the Super Nintendo yeah we

00:07:10   can't play that with my with that yeah

00:07:12   no definitely not Street Fighter 2 you

00:07:15   know I I don't know how many of our

00:07:16   listeners were around playing video

00:07:18   games in 1992 but if you were this game

00:07:22   like swept the video game playing world

00:07:25   it was a phenomenon I mean the one that

00:07:27   but yeah and it has like you know Ryu

00:07:29   and Ken and chun-li like all that like

00:07:31   it's like this game the chick with all

00:07:33   the boobs and the the looks all the legs

00:07:36   that you're thinking of but oh that's

00:07:37   right she choked people yeah okay I

00:07:40   thinking of some something else that's

00:07:43   maybe not appropriate no lady with the

00:07:47   with the legs looked a million leg kick

00:07:49   it looks like Channel two legs like I

00:07:51   thought she jumped on someone's head and

00:07:52   strangled them with her thighs I don't

00:07:55   know I don't I didn't play as her often

00:07:57   so I don't know if that was I don't

00:07:58   remember that is one of her moves anyway

00:08:00   so Street Fighter 2 I mean either side

00:08:02   like it this basically took the world by

00:08:04   storm it is kind of like like what we

00:08:07   see today when like an iOS game hits it

00:08:09   really big and like everyone you know is

00:08:11   playing it everyone was playing this and

00:08:13   I and this was especially relevant to me

00:08:15   because I didn't have a Super Nintendo

00:08:16   and it didn't come to Genesis for like

00:08:18   two years afterward there was a long

00:08:19   time and I would say Street Fighter 2

00:08:23   probably sold more Super Nintendo

00:08:25   systems than any other game ever for the

00:08:28   Super Nintendo like it was a I can't

00:08:30   overestimate how much it swept the road

00:08:32   and for good reason because it like that

00:08:34   that style of fighting game like that

00:08:36   was the original that style like that

00:08:39   was the first game to really bring that

00:08:40   to people and there it just spawned a

00:08:43   genre and now there

00:08:44   is that style game eighty million

00:08:46   different wage for every possible system

00:08:48   that came after that wasn't like in an

00:08:50   arcade first and then it came to you

00:08:51   yeah but it I don't remember I mean I

00:08:54   didn't go to arcades much like I was

00:08:55   slightly too young to really hit the

00:08:57   arcade scene like when they were really

00:09:00   big so I didn't I never really saw it on

00:09:03   arcade but I know it was an arcade hit

00:09:05   beforehand and it really took off when

00:09:06   it came to home consoles and Men it was

00:09:08   rough to be a Genesis owner at the time

00:09:11   when everybody was behind the Super

00:09:12   Nintendo to play that key so yeah I

00:09:15   didn't play any of those fighting games

00:09:16   I mean I've seen them and stuff but we

00:09:18   really didn't have any of those in the

00:09:20   house we were more racing Mario yeah

00:09:23   zelda family anyway my other honorable

00:09:26   mention is talk about not having having

00:09:30   strange games in the house we had this

00:09:32   game called vegas dream on nes and it

00:09:40   was like you were in a casino you need

00:09:42   to look you need to look up the

00:09:43   screenshots do this while I'm talking

00:09:45   about it you are in a casino you show up

00:09:49   and you have all the games available to

00:09:51   you and then you can like go to the bar

00:09:53   and like strange people approach you

00:09:54   with like propositions for stuff and you

00:09:57   can you know play special players or you

00:10:00   can go see a show and they have just

00:10:02   like this little like ooh these dancing

00:10:04   girls that don't really dance there's

00:10:06   just like music playing I don't know why

00:10:07   but as a child I like a fairly young to

00:10:10   I don't know how old would I have been

00:10:12   this looks so bad we played it upstate

00:10:14   in the Upstate house we had and I would

00:10:16   play this all the time I really liked

00:10:17   playing keno I think that that's how you

00:10:19   say it oh yeah yeah who knows anyway I

00:10:22   didn't know what I was doing for like

00:10:24   any of these games I just would gamble

00:10:26   and bet and play blackjack and yep there

00:10:29   it is and play play roulette ins up I

00:10:33   loved playing this game I don't know if

00:10:36   my parents knew I was playing this game

00:10:38   but they had to it looks like it's

00:10:41   fairly adult themed I mean the graphics

00:10:44   are buttons but oh I just remember the

00:10:48   music I really love this game I would

00:10:50   totally play it again and I think that

00:10:52   everyone should kind of look up and we

00:10:54   should get this on emulator just so you

00:10:56   can see it I have no I

00:10:57   I mean like I I really enjoyed Vegas

00:11:00   dream yeah and I'm so not a gambler

00:11:02   either but I just well playing this game

00:11:05   when I was probably like eight I don't

00:11:07   know how old was I yeah something like

00:11:09   that I mean I mean yeah like this is

00:11:11   like one of the games I really enjoyed

00:11:13   growing up was California games for the

00:11:16   Sega Master System that because you

00:11:18   could play Master System games on the

00:11:19   Genesis with this like a little like $15

00:11:22   adapter that sat on top of the Genesis

00:11:23   and I got the ROM for that I tried

00:11:26   playing it here it was so bad like and

00:11:30   not to mention like incredibly like

00:11:32   sexist and a ho ho well yeah but like

00:11:35   even the gameplay was horrendous by

00:11:39   modern standards and that that's one

00:11:40   that really did not hold up this your

00:11:42   Vegas dream for NES I have a feeling

00:11:45   this is going to be that kind of

00:11:46   scenario but like there are men that

00:11:48   come up to you and you might get married

00:11:50   so I don't think it really or women I

00:11:53   can't I couldn't remember I just

00:11:55   remember thinking maybe I might have

00:11:56   been playing as a woman batter know when

00:11:58   you like leave and you lose all your

00:11:59   money and you have to play like the

00:12:01   final slot before they kick you out of

00:12:02   Vegas and all this stuff then you have

00:12:05   like this walking away scene where

00:12:06   there's these four guys in like suits

00:12:10   you bounced you know you're walking away

00:12:13   to the airport which isn't a screen shot

00:12:15   it's like guys in in like hats like and

00:12:19   trench coats yeah sounds like you're

00:12:21   getting thrown out by like the Mafia is

00:12:23   that I don't know what mafia things do

00:12:25   come up like it's just so you got you

00:12:29   guys defense right because Nintendo for

00:12:31   a long time and they still do to some I

00:12:33   don't know how this game got in my house

00:12:34   like my my dad again it was definitely

00:12:37   from my dad but like it was around and I

00:12:39   would play it constantly like Nintendo

00:12:41   used to be a lot more strict than they

00:12:43   are now even about family-friendly stuff

00:12:46   like everything had to be

00:12:47   family-friendly like back speaking of

00:12:49   fighting games when Mortal Kombat first

00:12:51   came on on Nintendo systems if they had

00:12:54   to like color the blood I think white or

00:12:57   yellow to make it the enemy they just

00:12:58   called it sweat even though it was

00:13:00   obviously like the same blood from the

00:13:01   genesis version just like a different

00:13:03   color well nothing was racy in Vegas

00:13:05   dream it was just gambling okay

00:13:09   the the chorus girls they aren't dressed

00:13:12   so bad they have like you know like a

00:13:14   bathing suit there's age thing with a

00:13:16   headdress pool scene here well I don't

00:13:18   know what that pool thing is I never saw

00:13:20   any pools themed yeah that's looking

00:13:21   messed up it's not messed up anyway

00:13:24   Vegas dream

00:13:25   it almost made my list because I played

00:13:28   it that much but I didn't it didn't make

00:13:30   my list because I had no idea what I was

00:13:32   doing all right my my second and final

00:13:36   honorable mention is Golden Eye for the

00:13:38   n64 ooh

00:13:39   nice I was hoping you'd say that yeah

00:13:41   this is so again this is what Street

00:13:43   Fighter 2 and Goldeneye are not games

00:13:44   and going to play with Adam at least not

00:13:46   until he's much older and playing way

00:13:47   more violent games and these would be

00:13:49   like the tame ones that I try to lure

00:13:50   him back to reality with but yeah

00:13:52   Goldeneye for n64 this this came out in

00:13:55   97 and this was I you I was in high

00:13:58   school we were both in high school

00:13:59   during this time all my friends had this

00:14:01   the n64 was the first console that came

00:14:04   with four controller ports and that

00:14:06   really helped it with like local

00:14:08   multiplayer like multiplayer in the same

00:14:10   room with the n64 was amazing and it was

00:14:12   it was one of the first systems that was

00:14:14   powerful enough to really do that well

00:14:16   to actually have four player

00:14:17   split-screen and do that reasonably well

00:14:19   and two games really define this for the

00:14:22   time you know I know later on smack but

00:14:24   Master others happen but that was kind

00:14:25   of after my time the first three games

00:14:27   really defined this where Mario Kart 64

00:14:28   and Goldeneye 64 mario kart wii had a

00:14:32   lot of time with that but ultimately

00:14:33   gold and I we had we spent much more

00:14:35   time with and that game sold so many

00:14:39   controllers that game everyone I knew

00:14:44   every high school kid I knew at that

00:14:45   time was plenty of both genders by the

00:14:47   way was playing that game constantly

00:14:49   like every weekend almost every night

00:14:52   we'd go to somebody's house for like a

00:14:54   year and a half and play Goldeneye that

00:14:55   was like the thing we did every time

00:14:57   there was a family party at our house we

00:14:59   would the kids would all go upstairs and

00:15:01   play Goldeneye yeah that's what everyone

00:15:03   would play because it was great because

00:15:04   a lot of people you know relative to

00:15:07   other games could play altogether and

00:15:09   you wouldn't have to wait that long

00:15:11   before you kind of like got rotated in

00:15:13   exactly yeah and that I mean you know

00:15:15   now there are much more advanced games

00:15:17   of like you know the general for player

00:15:19   like shoot you know first-person shooter

00:15:21   on a console and you know

00:15:23   we've gotten much better since then but

00:15:24   Goldeneye was really the first one to do

00:15:26   that well did you play the single-player

00:15:27   I did actually not again not often

00:15:30   because I can only do it at friends

00:15:31   houses but I did play it and it was

00:15:34   decent I only got like a little bit of

00:15:35   the way through before I got kind of

00:15:37   tired of it again this was when I was

00:15:39   older and kind of falling out of games

00:15:40   my brother was starting to play a lot

00:15:42   more at this time in the 64 era but yeah

00:15:46   I mean I played some of it I liked it

00:15:48   the other thing in typical Marco fashion

00:15:50   I laid through the entire single-player

00:15:53   game and played the multiplayer game

00:15:54   quite a lot years before I ever saw the

00:15:56   movie so like when I saw the movie I was

00:15:59   like I know where this is like I'll just

00:16:01   walk down this hallway and there's a guy

00:16:02   there oh this is where the crossbow is

00:16:07   yep exactly

00:16:08   [Laughter]

00:16:10   anyway alright so finally let's move on

00:16:12   to our number four pigs all right so you

00:16:14   were talking about honourable mentions

00:16:16   and I'm gonna talk about this in okay I

00:16:20   wanted to put a Mario Kart on my list

00:16:22   because I my brother and I had a great

00:16:25   time together playing Mario Kart and so

00:16:29   it was a important game but again it was

00:16:32   a lot later that we started to play

00:16:33   Mario Kart so I think it's gonna I'm

00:16:35   gonna bump it back to my honorable

00:16:37   mentions because Mario Kart 64 was way

00:16:40   better than the original Mario Kart yeah

00:16:42   but we play both so all right yeah ok um

00:16:46   I'm feel good that's in the honorable

00:16:47   mentions moving on my number 4 you're

00:16:50   gonna die you're just gonna you're just

00:16:52   gonna stop breathing for a second and

00:16:54   I'm gonna have to revive you it's Mario

00:16:56   - oh my god that game is terrible I know

00:17:02   it's terrible I know my god you know why

00:17:06   I really like real Mario game it is but

00:17:09   listen it's it's his dream they fixed it

00:17:12   Thanks his little wet dream yeah it's

00:17:14   his fever

00:17:15   drug-induced dream he ate too many

00:17:17   mushrooms and he went to sleep and he

00:17:18   had this crazy dream anyway let me say

00:17:22   my reason I'm not saying the reason I

00:17:25   was also debating putting Mario Kart in

00:17:26   here mario 2 was the first time i got to

00:17:30   play as a girl playing as a female

00:17:33   character in a game that i already knew

00:17:36   that was why I loved it I loved playing

00:17:39   as Princess Peach

00:17:41   like I didn't care about princesses and

00:17:43   all of that stuff I just really cared

00:17:45   that I got to play as a female character

00:17:48   and I remember being like that being

00:17:51   exciting to me even as a little kid and

00:17:53   I would only play as her mm-hm and again

00:17:56   it wasn't because she was pink or an

00:17:58   address or anything like that it was

00:17:59   just because she was a she and I felt

00:18:03   like I could I don't know I just I loved

00:18:05   that I loved that I could pick the

00:18:07   different characters and even though it

00:18:10   was kind of fever dreamy I remember

00:18:12   playing it alot and it was right around

00:18:15   the time that I was getting good and and

00:18:17   into games so it was a game that like I

00:18:19   felt like I could play so yeah yeah yeah

00:18:23   I feel good I feel good about it being

00:18:25   my number four

00:18:26   it was almost my number three I almost

00:18:28   moved it up in the ranks all right well

00:18:30   I'm glad you left it there at least yeah

00:18:31   I mean that you gave good reasons that

00:18:33   is you know that's a perspective that

00:18:35   was an important thing for me of course

00:18:37   it was yeah like that makes it the way

00:18:39   you explained it that makes a lot of

00:18:40   sense and I wouldn't have thought of

00:18:41   that obviously cuz I didn't you know

00:18:42   haven't seen perspective growing up

00:18:44   right cuz men have the luxury of not

00:18:45   ever thinking that like the game is this

00:18:47   game gonna be made for me

00:18:48   well it right right but so for me at

00:18:53   that time that was just that was great

00:18:55   for a little girl who likes to play

00:18:56   games and I was I was a young I was a

00:18:59   very young girl who liked to play these

00:19:00   games that I was playing with my dad you

00:19:03   know like yeah so so that was good that

00:19:05   was really good and I actually like how

00:19:08   weird it is I just recently replayed it

00:19:10   with Adam it's super weird there's like

00:19:13   strange mice and but we had it snakes

00:19:16   that was the only Mario or Sonic game

00:19:18   that I refuse to play with I tried and I

00:19:21   got like one at one level in and I was

00:19:23   like I was like no and I even played

00:19:26   Sonic Spinball and I refused to remember

00:19:30   all the secrets were I loved the ice

00:19:32   level the ice levels so great with those

00:19:35   little like bees that look like they

00:19:36   have skis on and oh they're so cute and

00:19:38   then the whales it's awesome well

00:19:41   actually no I I misspoke there were two

00:19:43   Mario Sonic games that I refused to play

00:19:45   with Adam

00:19:46   I did play through incomplete Sonic

00:19:49   Spinball but I did not play Mario - and

00:19:52   for you know I bailed out after I think

00:19:54   two levels I also he bailed out after

00:19:56   two levels of Sonic 3d blast which is

00:19:58   also terrible yeah oh and man for Mario

00:20:01   - I love that desert level I just could

00:20:03   dig for days like I just wanted to like

00:20:05   dig the whole level and make sure there

00:20:08   was no sand left that was like a I don't

00:20:11   know what that would be I mean more to

00:20:13   like all the Mario games are acid trips

00:20:16   but Mario to it like take it Mario -

00:20:19   makes all the other ones seem like IBM I

00:20:22   love everything come on that like

00:20:24   funny-looking cactus it's so random

00:20:26   everything is so crazy random there's

00:20:29   like pumpkins and turnips and oh - I

00:20:33   love how weird it is it's so weird so

00:20:35   bizarre jumping spiders oh man

00:20:40   congratulations on that

00:20:41   interesting pic I'm gonna get a t-shirt

00:20:43   and wear it it's gonna be okay alright

00:20:47   my number four is probably the most

00:20:49   boring opposite of that I could have

00:20:51   possibly picked cuz Mario 2 is the most

00:20:54   exciting

00:20:54   oh it's wacky that's for sure my number

00:20:57   four is Tetris for the NES ooh is a

00:21:00   really good one this was 1989 this came

00:21:04   out it Tetris has an interesting history

00:21:06   the game actually existed a couple years

00:21:09   before that but I think what made it big

00:21:11   and well-known was the NES and then Game

00:21:13   Boy versions so Tetris I mean it is

00:21:16   timeless and again Tetris you know like

00:21:19   like Street Fighter 2 Tetris really

00:21:21   defined an entire genre that really

00:21:23   hadn't been done before and it is it is

00:21:27   so infectious it is so compelling like

00:21:30   Tetris is playable by everybody like

00:21:33   whether you're barely even a gamer at

00:21:35   all or whether you're not a gamer at all

00:21:37   all the way up to like if you're like a

00:21:39   pro game competitor they're like Tetris

00:21:41   tournaments like really intense

00:21:43   competition with like really customized

00:21:45   special versions of it this game has

00:21:47   gone everywhere its ubiquitous it is on

00:21:49   every possible computing platform that

00:21:52   can run it even like flip phones which

00:21:55   had almost nothing would almost always

00:21:56   have Tetris available for them graphing

00:22:00   my graphing calculator in high school

00:22:01   that like Tetris is everywhere our son

00:22:04   what did he call it the city game

00:22:06   something like that these big towers of

00:22:10   blocks yeah I mean Tetris is everywhere

00:22:12   I spent a lot of time playing it mostly

00:22:14   on my graphing calculator but it is it

00:22:17   is a great game and I feel unfortunately

00:22:19   in the current era of most casual gaming

00:22:22   happening on touchscreens

00:22:23   it's kind of a shame because Tetris

00:22:25   sucks on touchscreens you really need a

00:22:27   d-pad and buttons to do it well and

00:22:29   there are iPhone versions but they're

00:22:31   not very good for that reason I do kind

00:22:33   of miss Tetris in my in my modern casual

00:22:37   gaming in the rare times that happens

00:22:39   because it's almost you know I'm always

00:22:40   doing that on an iPhone or an iPad and

00:22:41   Tetris just has no no place on the

00:22:44   touchscreen at least you have this cool

00:22:45   test relate that we got you for Father's

00:22:47   Day that's true yeah oh also I wanted to

00:22:49   mention Tetris is so good it not only

00:22:51   did it define a genre but the things the

00:22:54   other entries in the genre are

00:22:56   themselves often so good they could have

00:22:58   made my list like I put dr. Mario as a

00:23:01   potential like amazing Tetris like game

00:23:04   like you know if not for Tetris dr.

00:23:05   Mario wouldn't certainly wouldn't exist

00:23:07   also poyo poyo which I played as dr.

00:23:10   Robotnik's mean bean machine that game

00:23:13   is amazing it's so fun and especially

00:23:15   multiplayer on both dr. Mario and poyo

00:23:18   poyo

00:23:18   the end like these these were really

00:23:20   kind of Tetris kind of spin-offs both of

00:23:23   them amazing games in themselves not to

00:23:25   mention the amazingness of the original

00:23:26   Tetris like it's again it's like this

00:23:28   historic ubiquitous timeless game that

00:23:32   spawned an entire category of other

00:23:34   amazing games like that can't that can't

00:23:36   go pass without getting on my list

00:23:38   awesome that's a really good pick I've

00:23:40   totally forgot about Tetris honestly all

00:23:43   right let's do our sponsor well while we

00:23:44   are here respond to this week by Casper

00:23:47   Casper is a company that's focused on

00:23:49   sleep they've created one perfect

00:23:51   mattress that they sell directly to

00:23:53   consumers

00:23:53   eliminating Commission driven inflated

00:23:55   prices Casper's revolutionize in the

00:23:57   mattress industry by cutting the cost of

00:23:59   dealing with the retailers and showrooms

00:24:00   and passing that savings directly on to

00:24:02   the consumer the award-winning Casper

00:24:04   mattress was developed by them in-house

00:24:06   with a sleek design and it's delivered

00:24:08   an impossibly small box an addition to

00:24:11   the mattress Casper also offers an

00:24:12   adaptive pillow and

00:24:13   soft breathable sheets now an in-house

00:24:15   team of engineers spent thousands of

00:24:17   hours developing the Casper mattress

00:24:19   it's an obsessively engineered mattress

00:24:20   at a shockingly fair price this combines

00:24:23   springy latex and supportive memory

00:24:24   foams to create a mattress that's got

00:24:26   just the right sink and just the right

00:24:28   bounce plus it's it's breathable design

00:24:30   helps you to regulate your temperature

00:24:31   throughout the night rather than just

00:24:33   being like super hot from sweaty foam

00:24:34   mattresses usually can cost well over

00:24:37   $1,500 for high quality but Casper

00:24:39   mattress would cost just 500 for a twin

00:24:42   750 for a full 850 for a queen and 950

00:24:46   for a king these prices are incredible

00:24:48   values for the quality you're getting

00:24:49   here and these are all made in America

00:24:52   now by a Casper mattress scent it sounds

00:24:54   kind of weird to buy a mattress on the

00:24:55   Internet

00:24:56   so they they know this so they're taking

00:24:57   care you hear they offer free delivery

00:24:59   and free returns to the US and Canada

00:25:01   with a 100 night home trial so if you

00:25:04   don't love it you call them up and they

00:25:05   will actually send somebody to come pick

00:25:07   it up at your house and give you a full

00:25:09   refund so there's no risk here a hundred

00:25:11   night home trial if you don't like it

00:25:13   they will pick it up and give you a full

00:25:14   refund they understand the importance of

00:25:16   truly sleeping on a mattress before you

00:25:17   commit especially considering you're

00:25:19   gonna be spending a third of your life

00:25:20   on it so I get $50 towards any mattress

00:25:22   purchase by visiting Casper comm / top 4

00:25:25   and using coupon code top 4 terms and

00:25:28   conditions do apply once again $50

00:25:30   toward any mattress purchase Casper comm

00:25:32   / top 4 code top 4 thank you so much to

00:25:35   Casper for supporting this show all

00:25:37   right so let's move on to our number

00:25:38   three picks what's your number three all

00:25:40   right my number three is the Legend of

00:25:43   Zelda which is the original Zelda game

00:25:46   on the NES came with a gold cartridge

00:25:47   yes you got have the gold cartridge

00:25:50   otherwise you know why live oh yeah um

00:25:52   so yeah I love this game it was the

00:25:56   first time I or anybody I guess has

00:25:59   encountered the Zelda okay and again

00:26:06   it's a it's very much rooted in my

00:26:08   childhood and I remember playing it alot

00:26:11   I remember not getting very far and I

00:26:13   remember calling up my grandmother all

00:26:15   the time for all of the tips on where to

00:26:18   like which bush to burn to get the

00:26:20   secret staircase to go down and get like

00:26:22   you know the partial heart from the guy

00:26:24   that brings back fantastic memories my

00:26:26   grandma was act

00:26:27   a really big gamer when it came to the

00:26:30   Zelda games and the Final Fantasy games

00:26:32   which I never got into but she did so

00:26:34   all of the grandkids would always be

00:26:36   calling up grandma

00:26:37   for the tips and tricks' get past stuff

00:26:40   because she's stay up late playing all

00:26:42   these games and my grandfather would

00:26:44   yell at her Norma come up to bed stop

00:26:46   playing that Zelda that's amazing yeah

00:26:49   it's pretty great

00:26:50   shout out to my grandma legends of Zelda

00:26:52   I have recently just played through it

00:26:55   with Adam and he really loved it and he

00:26:58   loved it so much that he wants to be

00:27:00   linked for Halloween so I'm pretty

00:27:02   excited about that

00:27:03   that's awesome yeah I feel like that is

00:27:05   an achievement I have unlocked I'm gonna

00:27:09   get a badge for that one when I make his

00:27:10   adorable little Zelda costume I can't

00:27:13   wait so legends of Zelda it was very

00:27:16   hard it wasn't that long of a game but

00:27:19   it was tricky I just really like the the

00:27:21   dungeon concept I really liked the

00:27:23   foraging concept and I think that and it

00:27:27   you know gaining pieces of equipment to

00:27:30   better your journey so this was the

00:27:32   first time I had a game like that that I

00:27:35   really attached to so yeah I'm a big fan

00:27:40   of the franchise and probably not as

00:27:43   much as siracusa because I eventually

00:27:44   stopped playing them at around winwaker

00:27:47   because i could not stand sailing all

00:27:49   those stupid boats all over the place it

00:27:51   was so damn boring anyway Legend of

00:27:55   Zelda number 4 sound pick thanks I'm

00:27:58   gonna go with another game from that

00:28:00   time period that's my number 4 or my

00:28:03   number 3 rather is Super Mario Brothers

00:28:06   3 you know the Mario series overall is

00:28:09   excellent but but to me there there are

00:28:10   there are a couple of really clear

00:28:13   standouts here Mario 3 is one of them

00:28:14   this is considered by many people we

00:28:16   were like one of the best games ever

00:28:17   made so I'm not alone here

00:28:19   Mario 3 at the time if this was a huge

00:28:22   leap forward in platformer games long

00:28:24   with Mario - sorry no God no I like how

00:28:29   it come by how it was I think one of the

00:28:30   first major platform games to

00:28:32   incorporate the level map mm-hmm and to

00:28:34   have the map be like kind of a mini game

00:28:36   in itself you could like you know that

00:28:38   you could like find hidden areas in the

00:28:39   map you could go around and

00:28:41   hammer brothers moved yeah the hammer

00:28:43   brothers move the ship moved you could

00:28:44   skip certain levels optionally you could

00:28:46   choose like if you really hated like you

00:28:48   know level one three but you could do

00:28:49   level one for you can you could go

00:28:51   around and kind of skip one of them who

00:28:53   would do forward that's that was the

00:28:54   floating one I don't actually get that

00:28:56   yeah four was the worst that was the one

00:28:57   everyone's gift I know yeah when I was

00:28:59   playing through with Adam I made myself

00:29:02   a rule that I had to play all the levels

00:29:04   and that was when I regret immediately

00:29:06   was like getting one for like oh god I

00:29:08   have to finish this but I did I did

00:29:10   finish I didn't use any warping and

00:29:12   played every level in the game I did

00:29:14   like the warping whistle aspect of that

00:29:16   game and all the secret stuff oh yeah I

00:29:19   mean that was fun

00:29:20   although Mario one had had warping

00:29:21   whistles - or warping at least warping

00:29:23   pipes but you had to find this yeah yeah

00:29:25   you can go above yeah yeah yeah but but

00:29:29   over like Mario 3 I really think added

00:29:31   so much dimension in this game it

00:29:33   introduced the the items and the

00:29:35   inventory that persisted between levels

00:29:36   you could have like special items and

00:29:38   choose to use though this level I could

00:29:39   really use like you know a star for the

00:29:41   first little quick scene in full of

00:29:43   Hammer Rose I can get it right through

00:29:44   that you know it and and the items were

00:29:46   very varied like and more varied than

00:29:49   than most other Mario games that I've

00:29:50   ever played

00:29:51   maybe all Mario ever played like like

00:29:54   you know even like Mario world like had

00:29:55   way fewer items and power-ups you know

00:29:57   Super Mario 3 had just a ridiculous

00:30:01   amount of stuff I loved all the suits

00:30:02   you could wear exactly that was so much

00:30:04   fun it was the raccoon suit and what's

00:30:06   the one where it like froze you that was

00:30:08   the Tanooki suit yeah I loved that I was

00:30:11   like riding boots yeah yeah there's like

00:30:14   one level of world 5

00:30:15   it's the boot level and it's like it's

00:30:17   so fun and I love the boot level but

00:30:19   there's so many things in Mario 3 like

00:30:21   that where it's like you just get like

00:30:22   one level something really cool or like

00:30:24   like I mentioned some of us before what

00:30:25   the hammer brothers suit there the

00:30:27   sledge hammer suit it's one of the

00:30:28   power-ups you only you're lucky if you

00:30:30   get one in the game generally you'll get

00:30:33   you'll get like one at most I think the

00:30:34   most they'll give you is two and the

00:30:37   sledge hammer shoe is amazing you can

00:30:38   kill everything in the game with

00:30:39   including like you know things like the

00:30:42   like the thwomps the big rocks that fall

00:30:44   on you and the castle is like you can

00:30:45   kill everything with sledge hammers

00:30:46   they're so fun but they only give you

00:30:48   like one of these suits in the game so

00:30:49   you have it until you get hit and it's

00:30:50   just gone that's alright well that's all

00:30:52   you get like the boot they didn't find

00:30:53   that this whole other mechanic

00:30:54   that's only in one level and again if

00:30:56   you get hit it's just over and they know

00:30:58   the other boot you have to kick the

00:31:01   dudes out of the boot well yeah but only

00:31:02   in that one level yeah yeah only in the

00:31:04   one level and those dude rolling in one

00:31:05   part of it like it's there's so many

00:31:08   these little these I like to cut the

00:31:10   ships too you have to change the ship

00:31:12   around and fly on the map yeah I mean

00:31:14   Mario 3 is so intricate and and also a

00:31:18   very big game considering this is back

00:31:20   you know back then in in the in the old

00:31:22   consoles they were very limited by how

00:31:25   much memory the cartridges had because

00:31:27   cartridge memory was very expensive so

00:31:29   they had to fit the game into very small

00:31:31   memory and that was often one of the

00:31:33   main limiting factors in how long game

00:31:35   could be so any game that that managed

00:31:37   to be on on an affordable cartridge that

00:31:40   was also very long had lots of levels

00:31:42   was was pretty impressive and pretty

00:31:44   rare and then Mario 3 just like if you

00:31:48   look at all the other games for the NES

00:31:50   and how good they are and how good their

00:31:52   graphics are how good their sound and

00:31:54   music is compare any other NES game -

00:31:57   Mario 3 and you just like min.i it's

00:31:59   amazing they fit this game on the NES it

00:32:02   was it was a huge I don't even think I

00:32:03   played through the entire game because I

00:32:05   would just use the warping whistle

00:32:06   you should play through with that if

00:32:08   it's fun yeah I should if they're very

00:32:10   hard they're harder than you remember

00:32:12   because you don't have the muscle memory

00:32:14   you used to when you were a kid and

00:32:15   you're just like let me just fly through

00:32:16   this section I don't know you're so good

00:32:18   at it and now I feel like I'm an old

00:32:20   feeble person like falling over my thumb

00:32:23   because I can't recreate what I used to

00:32:26   be able to do so second nature you know

00:32:29   that muscle memory is just gone and you

00:32:32   get into it yeah like I I was taking a

00:32:35   bear thing how bad you are at first

00:32:36   though yeah I was terrible for using a

00:32:39   week or so but but after about a week I

00:32:41   kind of got back into it mm-hmm okay I

00:32:43   should try it because I really did like

00:32:45   Mario 3 I played a lot of that it was

00:32:47   great it really holds up yeah alright

00:32:49   what's your number two right yeah number

00:32:53   two I'm going with Super Mario World cuz

00:32:56   okay that game was a game changer anyway

00:33:00   so Eddy work anyway so I've loved this

00:33:08   game it was so much fun to go through

00:33:10   all the worlds and find the secret

00:33:12   passages I love the cute little ghosts

00:33:14   there's no little booze and the big boot

00:33:18   just finding all of the different things

00:33:20   and then at the end changing spoiler

00:33:23   changing the world all different colors

00:33:25   and the star levels and the different

00:33:27   color Yoshi is there was just so much

00:33:29   going on in this game and when you first

00:33:31   step into this game the first time you

00:33:34   turn it on and picture yourself is like

00:33:36   you just came off of NES games and now

00:33:39   the Super Nintendo shows up and you put

00:33:42   this game in and you are Mario on top of

00:33:47   a little Yoshi pretty much eating this

00:33:49   adorable little fruit off of these trees

00:33:53   and everything's so bright and

00:33:54   everything so colorful it's all like

00:33:56   candy it looks like it just looks like

00:33:58   visual video game candy and you're a kid

00:34:02   and you are just ready to devour the

00:34:06   entire thing because it it was just so

00:34:09   joyful and wonderful and in addition to

00:34:13   the joy and the wonder of the game it

00:34:15   was hard and it was challenging and you

00:34:19   had to think about stuff and you had to

00:34:20   go through secret spots and it was it

00:34:23   was just really great and I have really

00:34:25   good memories of this game and it was

00:34:27   kind of I was of the age where I could

00:34:29   accomplish more in a game so this is

00:34:32   probably one of the first games that I

00:34:33   play it all the way through by myself as

00:34:36   you know as it being a new game you know

00:34:39   some of the older games I of course went

00:34:40   back and played through when I was a

00:34:42   little bit older but this was the first

00:34:44   one that I could play through right away

00:34:46   when it first came out so yeah Super

00:34:49   Mario World so great and I just loved

00:34:53   every part of it solid pick alright my

00:34:57   number two and this is kind of a weird

00:34:59   one I wasn't sure if this counted but

00:35:01   because it's top four I'm going to make

00:35:02   it count this is Sonic and Knuckles with

00:35:06   Sonic 3 locked on so most people don't

00:35:10   weren't aware of this because this

00:35:12   wasn't very very big hit I don't think

00:35:13   but but something in my ears was was

00:35:16   like kind of the last good Sonic game

00:35:18   for the Genesis the last like

00:35:19   traditional styled one at least so

00:35:21   it had it was a cartridge that wins the

00:35:23   Genesis but on top of the sonic Knuckles

00:35:24   cartridge was a second cartridge slot

00:35:27   and you could put Sonic 2 or Sonic 3 on

00:35:31   top of the cartridge making this

00:35:32   tremendous stupid looking pile and then

00:35:35   it would basically add Knuckles into

00:35:38   those games so you could play as

00:35:39   knuckles through Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 and

00:35:42   Sonic Sonic 3 was kind of a half game

00:35:45   because cyma 2 this was like made

00:35:48   independently but when Sonic 3 came out

00:35:50   they made it with Sonic and Knuckles in

00:35:52   mind so it was kind of like the first

00:35:55   half of what should have been a much

00:35:56   larger game and they were like spots in

00:35:58   Sonic 3 that was like oh here's like a

00:36:00   rock wall that looks obviously breakable

00:36:02   but Sonic can't break it and there's

00:36:03   like oh there's like a path behind it

00:36:05   and you can't see where it goes like

00:36:07   there's more level there how do you get

00:36:08   there and the answer came later which

00:36:10   was oh you you buy sonic a knuckles and

00:36:12   then knuckles can break through that

00:36:13   wall when you're playing as him but it

00:36:15   was when when you had the two games

00:36:17   together it formed this like massive

00:36:21   mega Sonic game that it blows away all

00:36:26   the other Sonic games it like Sonic and

00:36:28   Knuckles with Sonic 3 you know first of

00:36:30   all I thought the whole lock-on concept

00:36:32   was cool and interesting technically at

00:36:33   the time but this the resulting game it

00:36:37   was massive it was it has hours and

00:36:40   hours of gameplay the levels are huge

00:36:42   because you basically have to Sonic

00:36:44   include together you have multiple

00:36:45   levels you have all their bonus stages

00:36:47   intertwined throughout so there's like

00:36:49   six different kind of bonus stages one

00:36:51   thing I noticed a lot about Sonic and

00:36:52   Knuckles I'm playing through is that

00:36:53   compared to the other Sonic games

00:36:55   it has especially good music like the

00:36:58   music of Sonic no just sticks in my head

00:37:00   so much also the enemies are a lot

00:37:03   harder than most like just like the

00:37:04   everyday level enemies are much harder

00:37:06   in Sonic Mode there's an excellent long

00:37:10   story arc building to what I would

00:37:13   consider probably the best final bosses

00:37:15   and final boss levels in the entire

00:37:17   generation knuckles mode is is not quite

00:37:20   as good as a little bit shorter but it

00:37:22   actually is different enough to be worth

00:37:23   playing if you're a super fan like I am

00:37:25   and and again like we were saying about

00:37:27   how Mario 3 kind of embarrassed other

00:37:30   NES games I would say Sonic and Knuckles

00:37:32   with Sonic 3 really embarrassed is

00:37:34   almost everyone

00:37:35   game in just how incredibly good it is

00:37:38   graphics music depth even just overall

00:37:41   fun an amazing amazing game that's my

00:37:45   number two I never got into the Sonic

00:37:46   games my brother really liked them and

00:37:49   we had a Genesis we were one of those

00:37:51   terrible families that had you've got

00:37:53   all those two of the same generation

00:37:56   system we had a Genesis and a Super

00:37:59   Nintendo at the same time anyway so that

00:38:03   was the only time that that ever

00:38:04   happened we then went forth with

00:38:06   Nintendo holdings and oh yeah

00:38:08   well honestly I mean the Sega Master

00:38:10   System really was not a very competitive

00:38:12   system yet the NES owned that generation

00:38:14   and then after you know after the 16-bit

00:38:18   era with the n64 versus Sega Saturn and

00:38:22   then you know Dreamcast came later and

00:38:24   they're like say basically the Genesis

00:38:26   was the only System Sega ever made that

00:38:28   was really successful

00:38:29   what was the Sega leg laserdisc one well

00:38:32   if the Sega CD and then there was a 32x

00:38:34   I mean like sick I had a long string of

00:38:37   not great products after the Genesis and

00:38:39   I don't think either of us really played

00:38:41   it any original PlayStation either you

00:38:43   know the original PlayStation was a crap

00:38:45   system that was it is sometimes they

00:38:47   were mad at the controllers they hit

00:38:49   shapes so weird with other time losses

00:38:51   badly and in that case the market shows

00:38:54   badly like that the original PlayStation

00:38:56   was I mean part of the reason was like

00:38:59   cd-rom games back then they were loading

00:39:01   off of these 1x cd-rom drives they were

00:39:04   incredibly slow to load the disk would

00:39:06   get scratched and break all the time and

00:39:08   they they these systems were 3d capable

00:39:11   but they could they couldn't do 3d well

00:39:14   so you had these like crappy like low

00:39:16   polygon lobe you know blurry big

00:39:18   textures everything was like a flat wall

00:39:20   you walk down the hallways and what they

00:39:22   would like warp you know that first

00:39:24   generation of like Saturn and

00:39:25   PlayStation one was just so bad a 3d the

00:39:28   the first lesson was your 3d well was

00:39:30   n64 and even it just barely did it well

00:39:32   but anyway you're number one my number

00:39:35   one is Mario to number four and number

00:39:42   one anyway my number one is the Legend

00:39:44   of Zelda a link to the past which is the

00:39:46   Zelda on Super Nintendo this game

00:39:49   very much like why I picked Mario the

00:39:54   Super Mario World is because it again

00:39:57   it just looks beautiful that a suit when

00:40:00   you go from that 8-bit world of the NES

00:40:04   and you jump into the Super Nintendo

00:40:06   unless you were alive during that time

00:40:08   and it was a big thing for you and the

00:40:11   first time you saw these games and how

00:40:14   great they looked how much they looked

00:40:16   like a cartoon you were normally used to

00:40:18   watching and just the age of wonder that

00:40:21   you that we were at that time when these

00:40:23   came out seeing Zelda and I should say

00:40:27   seeing link in that light and in that

00:40:30   world and the way that they were able to

00:40:33   navigate through the world and the way

00:40:34   things had so much more texture and

00:40:36   depth and the puzzles in the water and

00:40:40   definitely the way the map was just the

00:40:44   map itself is very beautiful to look at

00:40:47   and the way you got to interact with

00:40:48   other characters it just made the game

00:40:51   come alive like you couldn't believe I

00:40:54   mean just like playing a little flute

00:40:56   and seeing the little animals scurrying

00:40:58   around like having all of that they're

00:41:01   just brought this game alive and again I

00:41:04   love that I love the Zelda games because

00:41:07   of the collecting aspect of it I like

00:41:10   the sword fighting the arrows I like

00:41:14   getting all the different boots and

00:41:17   tunics and all this kind of like I like

00:41:18   gathering all that kind of stuff you get

00:41:20   the flippers from the people in the

00:41:22   water anyway so there's so much great

00:41:25   stuff I was very into fairies and all of

00:41:28   that fantasy world when I was younger so

00:41:31   that just really really appealed to me

00:41:33   and the first time seeing a Link to the

00:41:36   Past

00:41:36   it just it was great I loved every part

00:41:41   of it and again this was another game

00:41:42   that on my own I was able to play

00:41:45   through all the way and it was just

00:41:48   delightful and yes

00:41:50   Zelda Link to the Past number one a very

00:41:54   solid pick also thanks alright my number

00:41:57   one the reason I didn't say much about

00:41:59   your Mario world picks but my number one

00:42:01   is Super Mario World for the Super and

00:42:03   yeah which is and this is this is a

00:42:05   tough pick to make because I didn't own

00:42:07   a Super Nintendo as I said I was a

00:42:09   Genesis owner but you got to play how

00:42:11   did you play all these games I ended up

00:42:13   playing mode I mean I some of these like

00:42:15   Mario actually did play that time just

00:42:17   at friends houses some of the other ones

00:42:19   like Super Metroid said I played later

00:42:21   on like emulated in college but really

00:42:24   Mario World

00:42:25   I mean to the rest of the road when I

00:42:28   was talking earlier about Street Fighter

00:42:29   to like kind of taking the world by

00:42:30   storm and like blowing everybody away it

00:42:33   did that for me but not nearly as much

00:42:35   as it could've because I wasn't that

00:42:37   into fighting style games really but I

00:42:40   was very much into platformers like

00:42:42   platformers were like might might like

00:42:44   that that is the only kind of game I

00:42:45   really played it in in in great length

00:42:49   at great length on those generation of

00:42:51   consoles as a Genesis owner very few

00:42:54   Super Nintendo games ever made me think

00:42:56   man I wish I had a Super Nintendo right

00:42:57   now but Super Mario World did that in in

00:43:01   spades I mean Super Mario World it for

00:43:04   Genesis owner because the gym just came

00:43:06   out first for a Genesis owner to then

00:43:08   see that for the first time to see Mario

00:43:12   well for the first time I think all of

00:43:14   us were just like oh crap that's really

00:43:15   good like oh crap we might have bought

00:43:18   the wrong system or we wish we had this

00:43:19   system right now it is so so good and

00:43:23   you know in all the ways that I

00:43:24   described earlier about how you know

00:43:26   compared to other games in the system it

00:43:27   really does embarrass most of them like

00:43:28   compared to most Super Nintendo games

00:43:30   Mario World really does embarrass the

00:43:32   crap out of them like it's such a game

00:43:33   but yeah I have to say though when

00:43:36   you're saying you know you got the

00:43:37   Genesis and Genesis owners were

00:43:39   embarrassed when they saw Summer Games

00:43:40   NES owners were embarrassed once they

00:43:43   saw Genesis games yeah of course when

00:43:46   you saw that first Genesis game when you

00:43:48   saw altered beast for the first time it

00:43:51   isn't oh that just blew my mind so fast

00:43:54   I could not believe that a game could

00:43:57   look like that I am no grave I just it

00:44:00   was affected me in a very deep way thank

00:44:03   you altered beast and then Ecco the

00:44:05   Dolphin after that but it was mostly

00:44:06   altered it's a big gap between us well

00:44:09   if by the time we got our Genesis it

00:44:11   came with Ecco the Dolphin yeah that's

00:44:12   and when my stall of Sonic in the middle

00:44:14   of a well

00:44:15   we got the gate sonic games too but like

00:44:17   you know my uncle when he first brought

00:44:18   home the Genesis it came home with

00:44:20   altered beast yeah and yeah when games

00:44:22   when consoles used to come with games

00:44:24   that uh certain bundles do you I mean no

00:44:28   I mean like my Genesis came with altered

00:44:30   beast and that was the only game I had

00:44:32   the flitter over the first six months I

00:44:33   had a Genesis the only game I had was

00:44:35   altered fees like for level yeah I think

00:44:37   it's six yeah it's it was not not a

00:44:41   great game

00:44:42   power up anyway welcome to your doom so

00:44:46   mario world you know going back to the

00:44:48   Super Mario for the Super Nintendo I

00:44:49   mean this game like I I remember when I

00:44:51   first saw it at at my neighbor's house

00:44:54   who'd gotten you know the soup of the

00:44:55   brand new Super Nintendo what really

00:44:56   blew me away about it was not only the

00:44:59   graphics as you said like that so the

00:45:01   genesis had focused a lot on sheer

00:45:03   processor power to drive a whole bunch

00:45:05   of stuff on screen like so the genesis

00:45:08   was good if you had like a sports game

00:45:09   like a football game where you have to

00:45:11   animate like 16 different sprites on the

00:45:13   screen at once Genesis could do that

00:45:15   better than Super Nintendo where the

00:45:17   Super Nintendo was better was in the the

00:45:19   level of detail that individual graphics

00:45:22   could have so it had more colors it had

00:45:25   I think I had way better sound chip and

00:45:28   so it'd be it kind of what it was able

00:45:31   to show on screen was like fewer moving

00:45:33   on just like fewer things but those

00:45:36   things could look way better than other

00:45:37   Genesis and so that's like kind of what

00:45:39   what I noticed immediately when I when I

00:45:41   first saw Mario World

00:45:42   not only how just amazing the colorful

00:45:44   graphics were like that you could tell

00:45:46   immediately this was like a massive leap

00:45:49   forward and then I also do remember the

00:45:51   sound being a really big thing like when

00:45:53   he first moved to the cave levels oh and

00:45:55   all the sounds echo yes I love that I

00:45:58   don't think I think that was the first

00:45:59   game I ever saw that where like the

00:46:02   sound would have echo effects would go

00:46:05   like the dripping noise and yeah yeah

00:46:07   that's something it had ambience to like

00:46:11   it like and a lot of the ambience was

00:46:13   simply just some of the enemy noises

00:46:14   being different like when you were in

00:46:15   the cave hear the birds flapping away

00:46:16   mm-hmm well when you did it you were on

00:46:19   the spring in the cave and it how how

00:46:21   that would echo or like if you if you

00:46:23   like if you threw a shell you got the

00:46:25   blue you know with like at that part

00:46:26   would echo like it was it did such a

00:46:28   great

00:46:29   of sound design and of ambience and of

00:46:31   graphic design that it really made you

00:46:33   feel like you were moving through these

00:46:34   different advanced places more so than

00:46:36   much of the games and of course you know

00:46:37   I love the sound of the bubbles popping

00:46:39   in the forest in the fall yeah

00:46:42   ballistic yeah yeah yeah the level

00:46:44   reading all the lives yeah yeah I mean

00:46:47   it's just incredible game and again like

00:46:51   compared to most other platformers the

00:46:52   level of depth you have in that game

00:46:54   there are so many levels first of all

00:46:56   and so many levels have two different

00:46:59   ways to leave have you alternate exits

00:47:01   and you like you have to find the old

00:47:02   friend I just to get to certain parts of

00:47:04   the map or to finish certain levels and

00:47:05   like just the amount of depth in that

00:47:08   game it was also one of the first

00:47:09   platforms where you could replay levels

00:47:10   mm-hmm that was another another

00:47:12   innovation like most games before that

00:47:14   most platforms you couldn't replay

00:47:15   levels infinite times and that was one

00:47:17   you'd go back to certain levels to get

00:47:19   certain stuff right or to find the

00:47:20   second exit so you kind of had to go

00:47:22   back to different levels you actually

00:47:23   wanted to play the full game which was

00:47:25   that was actually very fun was

00:47:27   remembering oh let me go back here and

00:47:28   get the blue Yoshi instead and yeah

00:47:31   Mario World and you know as a Genesis

00:47:34   owner I only had one Jenna's game on my

00:47:36   list like this for good reasons like I

00:47:38   was able to play all these afterwards

00:47:39   and some during that time and and I

00:47:42   think overall while there were some

00:47:44   really great Genesis games the best

00:47:46   games of the generation were on

00:47:48   incentive platforms of both 8 and 16-bit

00:47:50   and and even after it you know even the

00:47:52   n64 generation I'd say the same thing

00:47:53   which is you know it kind of hurts as a

00:47:57   second person to say that but it these

00:47:59   games were just so good at Mario World

00:48:02   by far is the one that that like draws

00:48:04   me back in whenever I see it and like I

00:48:06   want to play it more than any other ones

00:48:08   it's pull you back in yeah and now I'm

00:48:10   probably gonna play it again after this

00:48:11   cuz I haven't that was that was the

00:48:12   first one I played on the emulator with

00:48:14   Adam that was like two months ago so

00:48:16   like now I want to go back and and start

00:48:18   that again because I now I played

00:48:19   through all the Sonics all the other

00:48:20   Mario's I did the mm mm you know all

00:48:24   those yeah I have to say that my top

00:48:27   Zelda pick is my favorite Zelda game

00:48:29   period yeah the supers had no one yeah

00:48:31   it was great after that it just started

00:48:33   getting weird yeah anything all right so

00:48:35   I think that's it for now

00:48:36   right that's that's if it's episode

00:48:38   right yeah I mean I was really expecting

00:48:40   you to have a lot more sonic games I was

00:48:42   I fir

00:48:42   got about Tetris so I'm not surprised

00:48:44   about that because I do know how when

00:48:45   she really liked that I've gotten you

00:48:47   various tetris gifts throughout the

00:48:48   years but I completely am surprised that

00:48:51   you went more mario instead of more

00:48:54   sonic that's the thing I mean like I

00:48:56   love the Sonic games and I you know they

00:48:59   will always hold a special place in my

00:49:00   in my nostalgic heart because that's

00:49:02   what I had growing up we still have your

00:49:04   Sega in the Attic yeah you know and and

00:49:06   Sonic and uncles with Sonic 3 was my top

00:49:08   with my number two pick so like they are

00:49:10   really good

00:49:11   just Mario World is better it's simple

00:49:14   as that like now you know it and even I

00:49:17   mean I even I even kind of knew this at

00:49:18   the time like I Mario World was one of

00:49:20   the games I would always want to play at

00:49:21   my friends houses because I just wanted

00:49:23   more of it like it's so good and I

00:49:25   played through it a number of times in

00:49:26   college on emulators and so yeah it's

00:49:28   it's such a good game we should play

00:49:32   Mario Kart with Adam I think he'd be

00:49:33   really into that yeah you seen that

00:49:35   Mario's the 6401 was especially with the

00:49:37   balloons on the back yeah I think we're

00:49:39   probably enough to get some kind of

00:49:40   Nintendo system pretty soon so we could

00:49:42   buy all the old games on the Virtual

00:49:43   Console and fun cuz like we can't go

00:49:45   past 16 bid on this emulator we were

00:49:46   happy we have an Apple TV so all right

00:49:48   we're good shot cool thank you everyone

00:49:50   for listening and right yeah doo doo doo

00:49:54   doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo

00:49:57   doo doo are you gonna join in or what no
