Top Four

Top Four 13: Bagel Flavors

00:00:00   she tries 10 do I have to yeah yeah you

00:00:03   have to fancy pen people just try it

00:00:06   it's it's awesome

00:00:08   you should try em yeah don't look at my

00:00:10   notes what is this this is called what

00:00:12   it's the stubby blue thing just write

00:00:14   with it doesn't matter what's called you

00:00:15   called tornado stop just probably retro

00:00:19   something I just got a refill for it

00:00:22   let me see we got here actually nice yes

00:00:26   that writes very well yeah like yeah

00:00:30   it's actually yeah well one no

00:00:32   definitely not

00:00:32   I can get it in black no that's okay I

00:00:35   mean if I I don't like I don't write

00:00:38   with anything with pens ever like if I I

00:00:41   don't write anything down if I was gonna

00:00:43   ever if I was gonna start writing things

00:00:45   down on a regular basis then I would

00:00:47   probably just want an iPad Pro and I

00:00:49   would use the pen the Apple pencil and

00:00:51   the note daily yeah really I don't I

00:00:53   don't write I just give me the pen back

00:00:56   you don't deserve nice pens that is a

00:00:58   nice pen though thank you

00:01:00   it's like it's like saying if somebody

00:01:02   has like a really nice SUV like I don't

00:01:03   really want an SUV that's you but I'm

00:01:06   willing to recognize whether an SUV is

00:01:08   nice or not there's a bunch of

00:01:09   children's soccer balls in it

00:01:11   yeah I'd also don't I'm not sure I can

00:01:13   name a nice SUV actually I don't know

00:01:15   anyway so we're doing top 4 yes

00:01:18   bagels top four bagels now do I forget

00:01:22   where we land on whether we're including

00:01:25   obviously we're gonna talk about bagel

00:01:27   flavors but are we also going to talk

00:01:28   about like entire bagel sandwiches like

00:01:31   what all goes on that bagel your

00:01:33   favorite bagel flavor you have to have

00:01:36   reasons behind it and one of those

00:01:37   reasons should obviously you have

00:01:39   reasons it should include sandwich or

00:01:43   not so you want to decide you know like

00:01:46   the reason you like the bagel is based

00:01:49   on its application in your life that you

00:01:52   prefer so if you like if you're a

00:01:54   sandwich person and you prefer bagels

00:01:56   most with sandwich you're obviously

00:01:58   going to pick the superior bagel

00:02:00   sandwich bagel but if you like it with

00:02:03   butter or you like it with cream cheese

00:02:04   that's gonna be your preference is

00:02:06   whatever your favorite bagel is with

00:02:08   those accoutrement I guess you would say

00:02:11   okay that makes sense though

00:02:13   so that so that should inform your

00:02:15   listing decisions because I mean no one

00:02:18   just eats a plain bagel I mean who does

00:02:20   that you're like yes somebody does

00:02:22   children with no teeth like little

00:02:25   babies that gnaw on bagels yeah even

00:02:28   they tended like so memory isn't better

00:02:29   yeah well they like anything cuz they

00:02:31   just like gumming it to death and then

00:02:33   it becomes like a big messy lump cuz

00:02:36   they're so cute yeah it's so cute when

00:02:38   they eat anyway babies they're all just

00:02:44   gumming on bagels first yeah I could go

00:02:49   first I have a toss up for my number

00:02:53   four because okay I have for right

00:02:57   perfectly just for the record you know

00:02:58   all the other ones okay two and three

00:03:00   I'm also waffling but number one is the

00:03:03   cure two and three are waffling between

00:03:04   each other and number four is okay let

00:03:07   me tell you why I'm feelin all weird

00:03:08   here because my number four choice

00:03:12   potentially would be a bagel that I do

00:03:14   not get access to very often which is

00:03:17   asiago cheese

00:03:18   I have not hat don't say anything yet

00:03:21   stop looking at me like that

00:03:23   okay asiago cheese I've only had it in

00:03:26   Ohio from a bagel place that were

00:03:29   Brooklyn people who came and started a

00:03:31   bagel place so it wasn't just like

00:03:34   bruger's or something like that out

00:03:36   there none of the blocks yes I had it a

00:03:39   blocks okay so it was sure I didn't they

00:03:43   offered that flavor yes I had it with a

00:03:45   chicken salad on it and it's very very

00:03:47   good with chicken salad okay maybe I did

00:03:48   have it at bruger's oh my gosh so I saw

00:03:52   your cheese bagels I mean so I know my

00:03:55   world is just okay my number four bagel

00:03:57   is a blueberry bagel because it is

00:04:01   accessible everywhere that our great

00:04:03   bagels are accessible which is all of

00:04:05   the New York lower area which has the

00:04:08   best bagels the New York the lower New

00:04:12   York region yeah okay pocket that's okay

00:04:16   keep going yeah so blueberry yeah I was

00:04:21   gonna say asiago cheese because I really

00:04:23   do like it I haven't had it in a very

00:04:25   long time I think it's kind of a really

00:04:27   good

00:04:27   savory it has like the cheese melted I

00:04:29   don't know it's just very good but it is

00:04:30   kind of a base of a plain bagel with

00:04:33   kind of a mild cheese on it melted kind

00:04:36   of like into it ish

00:04:38   so yeah honorable mention Accio which is

00:04:41   number four blueberry because blueberry

00:04:44   bagels are excellent and they sound

00:04:46   really weird and they sound like

00:04:47   something a child would have but I like

00:04:51   them a lot they do not taste like

00:04:52   blueberry cake donuts that is very sweet

00:04:57   this is more of a weird savory blueberry

00:05:00   happening and I really like it with

00:05:02   plain cream cheese interesting no see

00:05:05   like eye or butter yeah usually I would

00:05:08   expect the the fruity bagels the

00:05:10   cinnamon raisin and the blueberry to be

00:05:12   toasted with butter most of the time

00:05:14   well toast with butter does bring it

00:05:16   like a little bit more sweetness to it

00:05:18   especially because you know you have

00:05:19   sweet cream butter and all that has

00:05:20   stuff but if you want more of a

00:05:22   substantial breakfast I guess blueberry

00:05:26   with cream cheese is there is really

00:05:28   really really good and it's way better

00:05:30   than all of the other weird seeded

00:05:32   bagels that are out there I should say

00:05:36   lonely seeded bagels we will get there

00:05:39   better man those are terrible and plain

00:05:44   why bother why bother we are in complete

00:05:47   agreement on that yeah plain to me a

00:05:49   plain bagel plain bagels are delicious

00:05:51   however there are so many better bagels

00:05:55   I would rather get any other bagel than

00:05:56   plain I feel like then you're just

00:05:57   eating like a dough ring like well I

00:06:00   mean okay bad bagels our dough rings

00:06:02   good bagels are malted nice and

00:06:03   delicious but like a plain bit it's just

00:06:06   like you might as well I don't know I

00:06:07   rather pick a croissant you know I

00:06:09   actually that's a tough call between

00:06:11   like it's been the mode of meeting if if

00:06:14   I have like you know a croissant with

00:06:15   you know stuff in it or like a plain

00:06:17   bagel like you know maybe with with some

00:06:19   flavored cream cheese on it or toast it

00:06:21   with some nice butter like I would

00:06:23   rather have other bagel flavors if I

00:06:25   have the option but if I don't have the

00:06:26   option if my option is either plain

00:06:28   bagel or like just plain old bread I

00:06:30   would take the bagel over the bread even

00:06:32   if it's plain however there are so many

00:06:35   good breads now like all the crazy

00:06:37   breads that come out the focaccia and

00:06:39   something-something and the flat this

00:06:41   and the I suppose I see that I don't

00:06:43   know but like there's lots of different

00:06:45   breads out there that if I'm gonna have

00:06:47   a bagel I'm gonna want my favorite bagel

00:06:49   flavors my top four bagels favorite play

00:06:51   baby before favorite bagel flavors or

00:06:57   something else that's okay that's a

00:07:00   difference in opinion yep

00:07:02   speaking of another difference of

00:07:03   opinion that was almost the same my

00:07:04   number four bagel is yes I go cheese

00:07:07   bagel really good stir over there

00:07:11   because I pick the same thing thinking

00:07:13   that you wouldn't have so my number yeah

00:07:16   so I cheese bagels you know they most

00:07:18   New York bagel places don't even offer

00:07:20   them that's why I kind of was like

00:07:23   honorable mention waffling because no

00:07:25   it's not around here it's not a true

00:07:28   bagel flavor well it's not an old-school

00:07:30   bagel flavor it's alright it isn't the

00:07:31   traditional bagel flavor and I think a

00:07:34   lot of places don't offer it or don't

00:07:36   consider it or even look down on it

00:07:38   because it isn't one of the like

00:07:39   old-school traditional like New York

00:07:41   slash Jewish previously how fast did the

00:07:44   cinnamon sugar a french toast bagel

00:07:48   we're all into everyone's baskets in the

00:07:50   in the bagel places sure similar that

00:07:52   jumped the that that jumped in pretty

00:07:54   quickly and now it's like a standard in

00:07:56   most places that's true I mean maybe

00:07:58   maybe that one sells a lots of kids and

00:07:59   that's one of the reasons I don't know

00:08:01   anyway regardless people like Sarah the

00:08:04   usher good cheese bagel I it seemed to

00:08:06   become really big in like the early

00:08:07   2000s with with the spread of the big

00:08:09   chain bagel stores and and then ideas

00:08:12   and and I feel a New York don't even

00:08:15   know what those are no they would never

00:08:17   survive here exactly so I first had them

00:08:20   at bruger's and Panera and actually

00:08:22   first Panera I think then bruger's I

00:08:24   think they are kind of swept the nation

00:08:26   with the I see I go cheese bagel then

00:08:28   everyone else kind of followed suit but

00:08:30   what I like about it and I think it

00:08:33   deserves more respect than it gets

00:08:35   because it has brought a lot of people

00:08:38   like Midwesterners in to bagels a lot

00:08:40   more effectively than previous attempts

00:08:42   had do you think that there's a secret

00:08:44   bagel cartel happening in New York State

00:08:47   that keeps out the chain bagel places I

00:08:50   think it's the I first of

00:08:53   do we know that I mean they they have

00:08:55   Panera's in the New York area but no one

00:08:57   buys their Pagels I don't know I don't

00:09:01   even think they make they make them for

00:09:02   the sandwiches I guess but that's about

00:09:04   it I mean if you know one going in

00:09:06   buying a dozen bagels from Panera I mean

00:09:07   I bet sigh but people do I mean people

00:09:09   having shoes at Subway in the city I

00:09:11   will judge them so hard if someone

00:09:14   brought a dozen Panera bagels to our

00:09:16   house I'd be like what are you doing

00:09:20   yeah not not so much that that like

00:09:22   they're bad but just we have so many

00:09:25   problems better like I rather they go to

00:09:27   a really crappy bagel place then bring

00:09:30   Panera because at least so the bagel

00:09:33   place that that were I'm not going to

00:09:35   name it because it's mean but there's a

00:09:37   bagel place that's near us that is I

00:09:40   think worse than Panera hotring of

00:09:42   garbage yeah so I don't know anyway I

00:09:46   shall go cheese bagel I think deserves

00:09:48   special mention here because it really

00:09:52   has advanced bagel flavors past the old

00:09:54   cartel flavors and it was like one of

00:09:56   the first ones to do that and it really

00:09:58   has brought in a lot of people from the

00:09:59   rest of the country who did who aren't

00:10:00   in like bagel strong areas and also as

00:10:04   just a you know the reason why I thought

00:10:06   my number four is not just for honorable

00:10:08   mention because it really is a very good

00:10:11   bagel for sandwiches I don't think it's

00:10:14   very good toasting it I it's actually

00:10:17   kinda difficult to touch with it making

00:10:18   a catch on fire because the cheese tends

00:10:20   to burn but anyway so don't toast them

00:10:22   but for sandwiches I I think they're

00:10:25   actually quite good if you're gonna have

00:10:27   like like Turkey or something like you

00:10:29   know exactly right yeah it works it

00:10:36   totally works

00:10:36   so I think it is great for that it is my

00:10:40   number four for that reason so my

00:10:42   brother he moved out to Moline Illinois

00:10:45   and he lives out there and works for

00:10:47   John Deere and being a New Yorker in you

00:10:51   know the the corn Heartland out there a

00:10:53   whole bunch of people they eat bagels in

00:10:58   their shop and the bagels they get are

00:11:00   like lender's bagels from the grocery

00:11:02   store like in bags right that's what I

00:11:04   grew up on in Ohio which is right

00:11:06   I love them they were so good so they're

00:11:10   barely bagels but okay so when he went

00:11:13   home he was telling us about this he's

00:11:16   like I can't believe the bagels they

00:11:17   have out there they're so terrible so he

00:11:19   brought to them a whole bunch of New

00:11:22   York bagels like we packed them all up

00:11:24   and and he he brought them back to

00:11:26   Illinois and when he put them out for

00:11:29   everyone at breakfast they were all

00:11:31   really confused that they weren't cut

00:11:33   and they're like what kind of cheap

00:11:36   bagel place do you get these from that

00:11:38   they don't cut their bagels and he's

00:11:40   like you're so used to them being from

00:11:42   the package that you just expect them

00:11:45   all to be cut whether they're from a

00:11:46   fresh bakery or they're from the grocery

00:11:49   store and that to me is just astounding

00:11:51   so I put a lot of people listening right

00:11:52   now are like wow yeah yeah we don't cut

00:11:55   our bagels they just arrive in a brown

00:11:57   bag do you think there are any listeners

00:12:00   that have made it this far into both

00:12:01   knowing us and also into listening to

00:12:03   this episode who don't know like proper

00:12:07   East Coast bagels it's possible Wow if

00:12:09   you I mean look at the the guys that my

00:12:11   brother was working with you know and

00:12:13   and guys and and women who my brother

00:12:15   was working with but they aren't listen

00:12:16   to our show they're not listening to our

00:12:18   show but I mean they're out there and

00:12:20   they didn't expect that to show up when

00:12:22   he you know my brother tells them oh I'm

00:12:24   gonna bring you real bagels and then he

00:12:26   shows up and they're like no I'm just

00:12:28   surprised that those people would be

00:12:29   tolerating us this long I figured if he

00:12:32   were that much if you were that far from

00:12:34   like bagels snobbery culture I figure

00:12:37   you would have turned this off long ago

00:12:38   well some people like to get knowledge

00:12:40   regardless right well for those people

00:12:43   we salute you know if there are people

00:12:46   listening out there who have not had a

00:12:50   like coastal bagel california bagels are

00:12:56   kind of weak i mean i mean but there are

00:12:58   plenty i mean look at the place blocks

00:12:59   in in columbus you know there are plenty

00:13:03   of places where brooklyn natives or

00:13:06   someone New York native has gone out and

00:13:08   brought bagel making technology to the

00:13:11   rest of the world no it's serious like

00:13:13   in a kettle yeah I mean a lot of places

00:13:16   don't boil their bagels that's like a

00:13:18   weird thing not weird but that's like

00:13:20   the way to make

00:13:21   people a lot of people don't know how to

00:13:22   make an authentic New York bagel yeah

00:13:25   it's just you know they think they're

00:13:27   making bagels but they're just making

00:13:29   rings of dough right they're making

00:13:31   circular bread with a hole in the middle

00:13:33   yeah and oftentimes that doesn't even

00:13:35   work out no all right what's your number

00:13:38   three all right

00:13:39   my number three is the cinnamon raisin

00:13:42   interesting I know I have two sweet ones

00:13:44   so that yeah number three double yeah

00:13:46   cinnamon raisin is my number three it

00:13:48   was almost my number two as I really

00:13:50   like it but it's my number three and I

00:13:52   love it with scallion cream cheese a

00:13:54   little salty sweet that is weird

00:13:56   it's so awesome and you don't think as

00:13:58   well you think it's weird every time but

00:14:00   you totally know my order it and see I I

00:14:03   totally respect both the cinnamon raisin

00:14:05   bagel and scallion cream cheese on their

00:14:08   own and in other combinations I love

00:14:10   both of those things however the

00:14:12   combination of those two is really weird

00:14:14   oh no it's so good okay listeners out

00:14:16   there you're gonna first you're gonna

00:14:18   tell us if you're from the Midwest and

00:14:19   have never seen a real bagel second

00:14:21   you're going to tell us you're going to

00:14:23   go out right now if it's the morning and

00:14:26   you're gonna get yourself a bagel and

00:14:27   you're gonna get yourself some scallion

00:14:29   cream cheese and you will put them

00:14:30   together and you will be amazed at how

00:14:32   delicious it is that's right I should

00:14:34   also point out to you said if it's the

00:14:37   morning to go to bagels it is not

00:14:39   possible to get good bagels after about

00:14:42   2:00 p.m.

00:14:43   oh no yeah yeah you cannot no yeah don't

00:14:47   do it like it really goes later get an

00:14:50   early bagel and then wrap it up and and

00:14:53   keep it I don't know because they leave

00:14:54   them out in the baskets that's the

00:14:55   problem so if you get early bagels

00:14:57   you can always wrap them up and keep

00:14:58   them a little bit more moist in like a

00:15:01   paper bag in a plastic bag paper and

00:15:04   then plastic over that and then your

00:15:06   bagel will last exactly all right so my

00:15:09   number three it's kind of a valley to

00:15:12   find flavor it's kind of the general

00:15:15   category of like medium brown

00:15:18   whole-wheat honey kind of like wheat

00:15:22   bagels that usually have oats adhered to

00:15:24   the outside yes I know what you're

00:15:28   talking about but I can't believe that's

00:15:29   on your list it is because the first one

00:15:32   my list is short as you'll see well it

00:15:34   should

00:15:34   for yes and they're thinking about it

00:15:39   yeah I see that for you

00:15:41   yeah yeah so yeah I actually a travel

00:15:44   coming up before

00:15:46   that's how blueberry got on my list

00:15:48   exactly crazy thing so so these these

00:15:50   kind of like you know we honey wheat

00:15:52   whatever whole wheat whatever with oats

00:15:54   on the outside those are excellent

00:15:57   when toasted with butter and that is

00:16:00   it's such a nice like um kind of unique

00:16:03   combo of like texture and flavor and

00:16:05   everything I really enjoy that as a

00:16:08   breakfast combo just the whole wheat

00:16:10   with oats on the outside toast with

00:16:12   butter I always feel like that the whole

00:16:14   wheat bagel has a little bit of bagel

00:16:16   guilt that you're eating a whole wheat

00:16:17   bagel because you feel guilty for eating

00:16:19   a bagel so you're really oh the whole

00:16:22   wheat because it's better right yeah I

00:16:25   mean I hold none of those illusions but

00:16:29   or whatever that word is there but

00:16:30   delusions delusions there we go that's

00:16:33   much better

00:16:34   yeah English major obviously yeah so I

00:16:37   hold none of those delusions I know that

00:16:40   every time I eat a bagel it's just the

00:16:41   way too much carbs and gluten and

00:16:44   everything for what we should be doing

00:16:46   but yeah that combo whole wheat with

00:16:49   oats and an side with toast with butter

00:16:50   awesome

00:16:50   bagel guilt okay my number two is the

00:16:54   everything bagel I do not like all these

00:16:59   seeded bagels I do not like regular

00:17:01   poppy seed or sesame seed I do not like

00:17:04   the single bagels I all a single seeded

00:17:06   bagels I only like the multi seed bagel

00:17:09   and the reason the multi seed bagel is

00:17:12   the best because it has salt and it has

00:17:15   garlic on it and it doesn't have those

00:17:18   flavors so exclusively like there's so

00:17:21   much it's so it's not just like a salt

00:17:23   bag or bagel which exists if everyone is

00:17:26   surprised by that who is not from over

00:17:28   around here or a garlic bagel which is

00:17:32   just way too much garlic because a lot

00:17:34   of times they do put the garlic in the

00:17:35   dough as well so it has yeah John I've

00:17:39   never seen that I mean I should point

00:17:41   out like garlicky those are garlic

00:17:43   bagels I should point out about bagels

00:17:45   too they have it in the dough

00:17:46   they have salt in the dough you

00:17:48   well yeah they put that it's extra salt

00:17:49   like it there's chunks of salt in the

00:17:51   dough sometimes mmm that's weird is it

00:17:54   no I mean so I should point out so I

00:17:56   worked at bruger's in high school in

00:17:58   Ohio and so my my experience of like how

00:18:03   the bagel restaurants work is solely

00:18:05   based on that which was granted

00:18:07   something like sixteen seventeen years

00:18:11   ago and was also a provers in Ohio so

00:18:15   obviously I don't know I've never worked

00:18:16   in like a like a you know quote a real

00:18:17   bagel store but I do know from back then

00:18:20   like all the flavors that they did you

00:18:23   know like the all the seeded bagels and

00:18:25   the salt and Moe which kind of council

00:18:28   those were all based on the plain bagel

00:18:30   dough you know just whatever seed you

00:18:32   put on top you know many of the flavors

00:18:34   just have the same plain bagel dough in

00:18:36   the middle and you just put different

00:18:37   things on top some of them are a little

00:18:40   bit more complicated than that certain

00:18:41   bagel places its but yeah it's possible

00:18:43   like hot bagels I'm pretty sure they put

00:18:45   it all in it's it's tricky you know what

00:18:48   what makes garlic and onion so good on

00:18:51   the outside of a bagel

00:18:52   is that they are baked so it gets kind

00:18:55   of toasted garlic right when it goes on

00:18:58   it's not it's raw when it goes on it

00:18:59   gets toasted in the baked and so if you

00:19:02   if you put these on the inside in the

00:19:03   dough it doesn't really work it doesn't

00:19:05   really develop that that nice toasty

00:19:07   flavor so it act that that's you know

00:19:10   even you can think about it like you

00:19:11   know when you bake things at home you

00:19:12   have the same issue of like when

00:19:14   something's inside something it takes on

00:19:16   a very different characteristic when

00:19:18   cooking than when it's on the outside

00:19:20   being toasted or heated directly okay

00:19:22   for the sake of argument then we can say

00:19:24   it's only outside but anyway regardless

00:19:26   of what's on the outside I don't like

00:19:28   when they are singular things on the

00:19:29   outside I find them too strong and so I

00:19:32   but for an everything bagel I like the

00:19:35   combination and the balance that it

00:19:37   brings and I believe that the best

00:19:39   interior for an everything bagel is

00:19:40   chicken salad because it it's not as

00:19:44   it's not like you're biting through a

00:19:46   wall of meat or a wall of vegetables

00:19:48   depending on what you put on your sliced

00:19:51   kind of sandwiches or like a wall of

00:19:53   cheese those type of things taste much

00:19:55   better on the asiago cheese bagel and

00:19:58   but for the everything bagel the

00:20:01   the the velvety texture of a really good

00:20:04   chicken salad balance is super well with

00:20:07   all the flavors of an everything so I

00:20:09   love everything bagels I would not toast

00:20:12   it with butter I find it that to be too

00:20:14   strong there's like too much seed going

00:20:17   on well there's a lot of salt if you do

00:20:19   that because you have salted butter on

00:20:20   top of a salty bagel it's okay with

00:20:22   cream cheese scallion cream cheese is

00:20:25   very good with an everything bagel but

00:20:27   there are other bagels which is my

00:20:28   number one bagel that is better off with

00:20:32   cream cheese so chicken salad on and

00:20:34   everything bagel is my number two and

00:20:36   also want to point out that oftentimes

00:20:38   everything bagels they get quarantined

00:20:40   in their own little bag because people

00:20:42   get horrified when everything bagels

00:20:44   kind of assault all the other bagels in

00:20:47   the bag yeah you know acid step yeah

00:20:49   that's totally fair because that that is

00:20:50   obviously what happens like you know you

00:20:52   put a but especially good like when you

00:20:53   put good bagels into a bag they're

00:20:56   probably still warm so you have this bag

00:20:58   worth if there's all this like kind of

00:20:59   like semi like steamy moisture in there

00:21:01   and the moisture makes the onion and the

00:21:04   garlic on the everything bagel is very

00:21:05   sticky yep and it makes it stick to all

00:21:07   the other bagels that are near its it's

00:21:11   very like it's it's kind of like a bagel

00:21:12   faux pas to package everything bagels

00:21:14   into a mixed dozen touching everything

00:21:17   there's are a lot of people that do not

00:21:20   like everything bagels at all like they

00:21:22   really don't like them so it's a strong

00:21:24   flavor and any of the other flavors

00:21:26   don't seem to contaminate each other but

00:21:28   the everything definitely does yeah I

00:21:30   mean I'm sure you know if you got only

00:21:32   onion or only garlic yeah those should

00:21:34   probably be quarantined too but honestly

00:21:36   I don't know I've never seen anybody a

00:21:39   quarantine onion or and well I've ever

00:21:41   seen anybody even buy them with the

00:21:42   exception of what I worked at bruger's

00:21:43   well you know people would would buy

00:21:45   them there but not often absent in the

00:21:48   rest of the world now in civilization

00:21:50   where like you know I've just been a

00:21:52   customer going these places and you know

00:21:54   just be ordering myself ordering with

00:21:57   friends you know ordering dozens and

00:21:58   everything I've never seen anybody I

00:22:00   don't think order a garlic or onion

00:22:03   bagel or at least it's very very rare

00:22:05   because to me it's like if you're gonna

00:22:07   have those flavors I'm with you on like

00:22:10   I don't want that much of them as when

00:22:14   they're when they're so low

00:22:15   i if you're gonna have those flavors at

00:22:17   all I feel like you're probably gonna

00:22:18   like the everything bagel better because

00:22:20   it has so much more and it's I think

00:22:22   it's in better balance yep that's the X

00:22:24   that's exactly why I said um but so but

00:22:26   when you go up to the counter and you're

00:22:28   like hey give me a dozen and they give

00:22:30   you 15 because that's the New York dozen

00:22:33   I guess don't they just throw in no you

00:22:38   tell me what you want I mean if you just

00:22:39   I'm sure like you're bringing the bagels

00:22:45   to somebody and so you don't have

00:22:47   specific orders like oh yeah I was just

00:22:49   gonna say have you ever gotten bagels at

00:22:51   school of course not because your school

00:22:53   isn't Ohio so you didn't get bagels in

00:22:54   school but we had teachers bring us

00:22:56   bagels in school because my school was

00:22:58   amazing and movie school yeah we had our

00:23:05   robot to go to the bagel store and get

00:23:07   us bagels and then we swam the pool and

00:23:09   looked at stars in the planetarium so

00:23:11   after we did all that we had some bagels

00:23:13   none of those things were jokes yeah

00:23:16   it's a public school so like you if

00:23:21   you're freaking for a group of people

00:23:23   just breakfast occasionally bought

00:23:25   bagels like for the office to bring in

00:23:27   you don't know who's gonna like what so

00:23:29   you just go up to the guy and you're

00:23:30   like just give me a dozen of everything

00:23:33   like give me something of everything

00:23:34   I've never I've always specific made it

00:23:37   just cuz I'm me and I like to control

00:23:39   things but I've never specifically order

00:23:41   things like that and I would even argue

00:23:42   that if you're getting a sort of bagels

00:23:44   for an unknown audience or people with

00:23:47   unknown tastes I would argue that garlic

00:23:50   or onion and even poppy maybe would be

00:23:53   bad choices because not enough people

00:23:55   like that much of those things salt too

00:23:58   is risky my own that's my mom's favorite

00:24:00   bagel assault bagel your mom is the only

00:24:03   person I've ever met who eats salt

00:24:04   bagels including the time when I worked

00:24:06   at burgers and sold them every day no

00:24:08   I've never met anyone who really but she

00:24:10   loves him but she when she gets them she

00:24:13   takes some of the salt off the top

00:24:14   because it's too much because it's

00:24:16   literally like crusted with salt yeah

00:24:19   the salt bail is when I was recruiters

00:24:21   those were always the ones that you'd

00:24:23   have the most left at the end of the day

00:24:24   like every other flavor you know you'd

00:24:26   be baking them throughout the morning as

00:24:28   to run out of things the salt bagel

00:24:30   you'd only have to bake once and you'd

00:24:33   only you'd throw on like maybe six of

00:24:36   them for the whole day and there would

00:24:38   always be some left and I mean there's

00:24:40   no reason to even have them except that

00:24:41   like those like for people who would

00:24:44   come in during the day wanting a salt

00:24:45   bagel would you like if that's what you

00:24:48   want and you're out of that like there

00:24:50   is no substitute that is not salty the

00:24:52   everything comes a little bit of along

00:24:54   the way but it's no but then you have to

00:24:55   have all the other flavors too if you

00:24:57   don't want all that and you just want

00:24:58   like a very like if you like a lot of

00:25:00   salt like that's yeah it's it's

00:25:02   basically a pretzel at that point that's

00:25:04   right you're right that's exactly what

00:25:06   it is but it's it's salt people who

00:25:08   really like pretzels but it's even

00:25:10   saltier than most salty pretzels yeah

00:25:13   yeah as I said my mom she always thumbs

00:25:15   off half the salt right yeah yeah so

00:25:19   there she was one of those very few

00:25:21   people who eat salt bagels yep I always

00:25:22   got to get a salt bagel from one in the

00:25:24   dozen for my family so as your number

00:25:27   two my number two is also a kind of

00:25:30   vaguely defined flavor but it's a little

00:25:32   more narrow it is the the Rye family so

00:25:36   this includes rye pumpernickel and

00:25:38   marble which is right plus pumpernickel

00:25:40   is pumpernickel really is a rye weight

00:25:42   so your top four bagels are not for

00:25:43   bagels we're not doing top four families

00:25:46   of bagels

00:25:47   well it's pumpernickel is rye and

00:25:50   there's also some times where I with

00:25:52   seeds in it and there's also sometimes

00:25:53   marbled rye which is yeah so it's well

00:25:55   you got a pick one because it doesn't

00:25:56   matter when there's sometimes you got to

00:25:58   pick which one if you went to the most

00:26:00   beautiful perfect bagel place ever and

00:26:03   you and they have had everything that

00:26:06   you ever ever had and you you want to

00:26:09   try it or you want to taste so they have

00:26:11   a rye and the marble of rye and a

00:26:13   pumpernickel what would you pick that's

00:26:16   a really tough call I think I'd probably

00:26:18   go rye but I also use the bagel shop of

00:26:22   our mind

00:26:22   I wouldn't go marble because to me you

00:26:24   got to commit one or the other okay so

00:26:26   you got to take that off the list but

00:26:28   but if only one of these is available it

00:26:30   still gets that slot that's what I'm

00:26:32   saying okay all right and I like these

00:26:35   for the same reason I like the the wheat

00:26:37   with oats on the outside toasting it

00:26:39   with butter is just awesome like a nice

00:26:42   Rai family bagel toasted with butter

00:26:44   with or without the caraway seeds I

00:26:46   don't mind I don't mind them and that in

00:26:47   bread they don't belong there but in

00:26:49   vehicles I don't mind them that is a

00:26:51   fantastic combo just the you know like

00:26:53   the nice ride flavor with the butter all

00:26:56   through it and a nice crisp coating on

00:26:58   the outside that that is fantastic and

00:27:01   again hard to beat for for the butter

00:27:04   combo most of your bagels seem to be

00:27:06   preferable with butter well there's a

00:27:08   reason for that that I'll get to but so

00:27:11   yeah I mean so you know number four is

00:27:13   Asiago that's not a butter bingo that's

00:27:14   a sandwich bagel so I have a sandwich at

00:27:16   the bottom I know two are both kind of

00:27:18   butter only bagels like I wouldn't put a

00:27:19   sandwich on a rye or a wheat so what's

00:27:22   your number one my number one bagel is

00:27:25   the best universal bagel that is great

00:27:29   with cream cheese it's great with plain

00:27:33   cream cheese or flavored cream cheese of

00:27:35   pretty much any flavor it is wonderful

00:27:38   with sandwiches

00:27:39   it is wonderful with sandwich salads it

00:27:42   is just the best

00:27:44   it is fantastic toasted with butter it

00:27:46   is just the universally it's like it's

00:27:49   like the o-blood type of bagels right

00:27:52   it's not the no I well it's like

00:27:54   versatile receiver baby I think oh is

00:27:57   the donor I don't know anyway it's it's

00:27:59   the most universal blood bagel of bagels

00:28:03   I'm getting crazy here okay it's the egg

00:28:06   bagel the egg bagel is the best bagel it

00:28:09   has a flavor but yet it can carry all

00:28:12   other flavors it is just no don't listen

00:28:16   it is amazing

00:28:18   think of it it is it is just crisp and

00:28:20   it has its own like rich texture and

00:28:23   flavor that with just butter or it can

00:28:26   carry like a really sweet cream cheese

00:28:29   like strawberry cream cheese or it could

00:28:31   carry more of a savory cream cheese like

00:28:33   a scallion or vegetable Oh egg bagel

00:28:37   with vegetable cream cheese come on it's

00:28:40   amazing yeah and you could have it with

00:28:43   sandwiches it's so good with like turkey

00:28:45   and cheese I agree with most of what

00:28:49   you've said so it is my best most number

00:28:52   one for sure' top of the charts bagel

00:28:54   because it goes with

00:28:56   everything and I always feel like it

00:28:57   there is never anything that I would

00:28:59   feel like going on a bagel that wouldn't

00:29:01   be great with an egg bagel don't didn't

00:29:03   ah egg bagel see I wonder if the egg

00:29:07   bagel is really very similar to the

00:29:09   plain big don't say that oh no no I'm

00:29:12   not saying it's that's horrible just

00:29:14   take it back that in our kits very

00:29:16   similar the a bagel is not that much of

00:29:19   a departure from the plain bagel it's

00:29:20   really a very subtle difference it's not

00:29:22   very subtle it is bright yellow

00:29:24   first of all in color it's effective all

00:29:26   in flow

00:29:27   there's flavor if you bite into a plain

00:29:30   bagel you're just like bagel whatever

00:29:33   but if you bite into an egg bake oh you

00:29:36   were like wow this feels like a plane

00:29:38   because there's not a lot of you know

00:29:40   crazy texture going on there and that's

00:29:42   a reason why it's so universal because

00:29:43   it doesn't like distract from a whole

00:29:45   bunch of things but it has this great

00:29:48   rich flavor to it that you feel like

00:29:53   you're eating something and not just a

00:29:55   ring of dough like it's like an eggy

00:29:56   bread like it's like when you have a

00:29:59   slice of challah bread versus a slice of

00:30:01   you know like white Italian bread or

00:30:04   something you know the challah bread has

00:30:06   like something to it you got some like

00:30:07   mmm right like it's there I I loved

00:30:10   challah bread and I and I like egg

00:30:11   bagels like a mop-up some sauce it's

00:30:15   okay don't mean I agree with with how

00:30:18   much you like the a bagel but I think a

00:30:20   lot of that applies to the plane it's

00:30:23   the egg bagel is better for sure I'm not

00:30:25   gonna doubt that but I don't think the

00:30:27   difference between egg and plain is as

00:30:29   big as you the plain bagel cannot carry

00:30:31   butter the way an egg bagel can a plain

00:30:34   bagel cannot carry plain cream cheese

00:30:36   the way an egg bagel can no contest I

00:30:40   wonder I love to do it I'd be willing to

00:30:44   do a blind test with you to see if you

00:30:46   can actually I take that on against

00:30:50   plain blind

00:30:51   tomorrow morning let's go you mean we're

00:30:55   going Ardsley okay do it I wonder I mean

00:30:59   and I mean you try what happened when be

00:31:02   a little hard to control because like

00:31:04   the two bagels might might have been

00:31:05   like differently made or differently

00:31:07   we're going 6:00 in the morning I am

00:31:09   yeah well I'm saying we may have to do

00:31:11   multiple tests to really make it valid

00:31:13   hey when our friends didn't believe us

00:31:15   that we did not like that one bagel

00:31:17   place and thought that the bagel is that

00:31:18   we go to was superior and they tried to

00:31:20   bring over those bagels that time and

00:31:22   they tried to trick us and be like oh

00:31:24   here take this bagel

00:31:26   we knew the second that bagel came out

00:31:28   of the bag that that was from the bad

00:31:30   bagel place oh not the good bagel place

00:31:32   and they were very surprised by that and

00:31:34   said okay from now on when we get you

00:31:36   bagels we'll get it from the good place

00:31:37   because they're amazing friends but I

00:31:39   bet that I will be able to taste test

00:31:42   this no problem blind and I will be able

00:31:46   to tell the difference I think you

00:31:47   probably will be would you be doing it

00:31:49   plane like totally unadulterated with

00:31:51   anything or would we toast both of them

00:31:53   with butter or something on them see I

00:31:56   mean the more variables you put in the

00:31:58   harder it is to control but as long as I

00:32:00   have the same variables yeah I mean I

00:32:03   would say toast with butter would be a

00:32:05   good overall test cuz day and more

00:32:07   certain I will get it right right well

00:32:09   cuz but plane you play would actually be

00:32:11   easier because there be fewer like the

00:32:13   the salty fetters the butter is going to

00:32:15   actually distract you from the make

00:32:17   bagel I am ready okay and it's like my

00:32:21   superpower I think you probably will be

00:32:23   able to tell the difference but I I

00:32:24   really I'm hoping that you'll really be

00:32:26   honest but like how different is it

00:32:28   really and I want to I want to tell to

00:32:30   like you know how I have no promises

00:32:32   about being honest about how different

00:32:33   it is okay that's all right so I reserve

00:32:38   the right to exaggerate that's yeah

00:32:40   that's fine me too that that's us the

00:32:44   original preference is that strong all

00:32:47   right so overall I think I think that's

00:32:51   a solid pick I don't agree with it but I

00:32:53   do think the egg bagel is good and I see

00:32:56   I respect I respect that other choice

00:32:58   Thanks what's your number one bagel you

00:33:03   know everyone knows when everyone knows

00:33:05   my number one bagel is the everything

00:33:06   bagel you know for all the reasons you

00:33:08   said about both the reason you like

00:33:11   everything bagels and I should clarify

00:33:13   too because you didn't quite we didn't

00:33:15   quite say it yet and everything bagel

00:33:18   includes the following seeds only sesame

00:33:22   garlic poppy

00:33:23   onion and salt that's it no caraway

00:33:27   seeds no sunflower seeds no other seeds

00:33:30   go on and everything bagel sesame poppy

00:33:32   garlic onion salt and it has to have all

00:33:34   five of those if you omit the salt

00:33:35   that's a way we core bagel so the really

00:33:38   install the bring all go this is this is

00:33:40   new I know you are looking at me like of

00:33:42   course but you know I'm trying to

00:33:43   remember the George Carlin shower

00:33:45   routine oh that's a rbirtle crotch and

00:33:48   teeth thank you anyway

00:33:56   so everything bagel has to have those

00:33:58   things

00:33:58   ideally there there should be seeds on

00:34:01   both sides and the the the whatever the

00:34:04   bottom side of the bagel is doesn't need

00:34:06   to necessarily have as much seating as

00:34:09   the top half but there should be some

00:34:11   that have like fallen around the edges

00:34:12   and maybe maybe when they were flipped

00:34:14   maybe with it maybe some guy on the back

00:34:15   either way there should be some on both

00:34:17   sides so that when you if you slice the

00:34:19   bagel in the traditional way one side

00:34:22   isn't just totally blank right so you

00:34:24   can insert you can have it open face

00:34:25   without exact lain bagel exactly exactly

00:34:29   that's burnt exactly so that that is the

00:34:33   parameters with which I'm defining

00:34:35   everything bagels that being said one of

00:34:37   the reasons they're my number one is

00:34:39   because of their incredible versatility

00:34:40   you can get an everything bagel at a

00:34:44   place where the bagels aren't that great

00:34:45   and it's still pretty good any kind of

00:34:48   like diner or restaurant anything in

00:34:50   most of the country even if they offer

00:34:52   an everything bagel as an option to put

00:34:54   a sandwich on her as an option to have

00:34:55   toasted we know with butter or something

00:34:57   it's actually pretty passable most

00:34:59   places I forgot about the egg sandwich

00:35:01   right situation yeah everything's best

00:35:04   for egg sandwiches yeah so to me and

00:35:06   everything bagel is kind of the

00:35:08   universal bagel in that you can have it

00:35:10   everything you said about the egg bagel

00:35:12   I think about the everything bagel where

00:35:13   I think it works in every circumstance

00:35:16   whether you're toasting it with butter I

00:35:17   don't think it's too much oh I don't

00:35:18   like a test day with butter so it is it

00:35:20   is strong but I don't think it's too

00:35:21   much of whether you're toasting with

00:35:22   butter whether you're putting cream

00:35:24   cheese on it and I would say almost

00:35:25   strawberry cream cheese on an everything

00:35:27   bagel I don't like sweet cream cheeses

00:35:31   so it may be maybe for me that doesn't

00:35:33   matter but you know for me every other

00:35:35   kind of flavor whether your hat whether

00:35:37   it's

00:35:37   plain cream cheese or one of the

00:35:39   vegetable ones scallion anything like

00:35:41   that to me everything bagels carry

00:35:44   everything sandwiches

00:35:46   cream cheese butter toasted or not

00:35:48   toasted they are the universal bagel to

00:35:51   me where they make all those things good

00:35:54   not just not just decent but they make

00:35:56   all of them like great and the flavor I

00:35:58   just love the that flavor combo of the

00:36:00   of those five seeds well for C its plus

00:36:03   salt well two seats plus two or

00:36:05   anybody's matter the five things that go

00:36:08   on top of an everything baby to me that

00:36:11   there's it's very hard for me to go into

00:36:14   a bailer shop and order anything else

00:36:16   when that's an option you know I mean

00:36:18   and if I'm getting a toast with butter

00:36:19   it's it's easier for me to get something

00:36:22   else I guess but like if I'm if I'm in a

00:36:23   sandwich no contest if I'm in a bagel

00:36:25   sandwich for a bailer shop chicken salad

00:36:27   or meat or any you know we're like you

00:36:29   know turkey deli meat any of those

00:36:31   things eggs I'm putting all those on an

00:36:33   everything bagel if they're available as

00:36:35   long as they're not like totally old and

00:36:36   rock-hard which fortunately they hardly

00:36:38   ever are because they're so popular that

00:36:40   they're always baking them throughout

00:36:42   the day chances are everything bagels

00:36:44   your bigger risk wanting everything

00:36:46   bagel is that they'll be out of them

00:36:48   now that they'll be old once Dale would

00:36:49   you bring it on a plane no you would not

00:36:53   you would bring an egg baby on a plane

00:36:54   on a plane I would opt for a different

00:36:56   choice you're right just saying you're

00:36:58   right one step more universal to egg

00:37:00   bagel well so big baby bagel to your mom

00:37:03   who learns to eggs no so no well that's

00:37:06   a different story

00:37:07   well say okay if you're gonna if you

00:37:09   want the true universal bagel without

00:37:11   regard to how much you love it it's the

00:37:13   plain bagel because the plane bail

00:37:15   couldn't really go everywhere but you

00:37:17   know the plain bagel can't be given to

00:37:19   people that are allergic to wheat

00:37:20   neither can any of the bails the egg is

00:37:24   not going to help you there they don't

00:37:25   replace the flour with ace there's no

00:37:30   gluten free bagel I'm sure somebody has

00:37:33   made that somewhere that I label like

00:37:36   clay please don't make it illegal ah

00:37:39   it's bad enough that we made flat bagels

00:37:42   and then people call them that stupid

00:37:43   combo word flagel don't the words like I

00:37:45   can't sit I just can't can we talk about

00:37:48   weirdo bagels bialys the new crazy

00:37:51   rainbow bagel I mean come on go home

00:37:53   Bethel you're drunk like that's insane

00:37:54   that's crazy yeah I like I like a bialy

00:37:56   and again toasted with butter to me the

00:37:58   alleys are amazing especially what is

00:38:00   that in the middle onion it's kind of no

00:38:03   it's I think it's all onion and I think

00:38:04   I think the dough is even an onion IDO

00:38:06   it's like dough a little bit doughy in

00:38:07   the middle I don't know bialys are

00:38:09   really good and we always have a strange

00:38:11   property for us that that our favorite

00:38:14   bialys are just from our grocery store

00:38:18   bakery like thank you stop and shop yeah

00:38:21   like I don't know if stop and shop has

00:38:23   particularly amazing bakers and like

00:38:26   their bagels and their roles and

00:38:27   everything are all mediocre at best but

00:38:29   they're beyond these are really good

00:38:30   yeah and those rainbow bagels I mean

00:38:33   come on people don't you know you're

00:38:34   just eating like a gallon of food die

00:38:36   like yeah and it's just bagels it's a

00:38:39   plain bagel like swirled with they dial

00:38:42   the dough and then they swirl it all

00:38:44   together and then they bake it I'm like

00:38:46   people are around the lot like around

00:38:48   the block and Lions waiting for these

00:38:50   rainbow bagels with like yeah with with

00:38:53   cream cheese that's pretty much full of

00:38:55   sprinkles like with more dye like this

00:38:58   is that's just so weird your people

00:39:00   colors don't have flavors like they

00:39:01   don't taste like anything just get off

00:39:05   the line and go get an egg bagel

00:39:07   I'd go everything hi everyone the

00:39:14   morning after we recorded as we

00:39:15   threatened do during the show we

00:39:17   performed a blind taste test to see if

00:39:19   TIFF could reliably distinguish between

00:39:20   plain and egg bagels here's how that

00:39:22   went

00:39:23   first I gave her a piece of an egg bagel

00:39:26   this is not egg I mean youyou can just

00:39:32   take bites out of them you don't have to

00:39:34   actually eat them

00:39:38   next a plain bagel I think that one was

00:39:41   egg next another plain bagel let me see

00:39:46   that one see it let me taste the other

00:39:49   one what do you think this is a gig or

00:39:51   not I'm thinking not and it tastes bland

00:39:55   and horrible next another plain bagel

00:39:58   this is egg absolutely 100% I can feel

00:40:02   it in the texture so I'm really good

00:40:05   let every egg you raise the next one

00:40:09   Oh enjoy my egg bagel next an egg bagel

00:40:15   it's also eggs finally another egg bagel

00:40:19   this is not egg taste it's plain this

00:40:25   alright that was the last one you ready

00:40:27   to take your blindfold off and yeah I

00:40:29   did mmm-hmm okay you did very poorly you

00:40:45   got most of them wrong I think I have to

00:40:47   go back and double-check but I'm pretty

00:40:48   sure so it turns out my favourites

00:40:52   you got many of them wrong how do you

00:40:55   how do you feel about this so good but I

00:40:59   do want more bagels there are a little

00:41:01   kitchen thanks
