Cortex 56: Castles Made of Sand

00:00:00   gray I need your help yeah how do you [TS]

00:00:02   break a full week sleep cycle home Mike [TS]

00:00:06   Mike I need your help where have you [TS]

00:00:16   been [TS]

00:00:16   we'll get to that tell me what's going [TS]

00:00:19   on with you well I mean I've come back [TS]

00:00:21   from my holy day my holy day is over and [TS]

00:00:24   [Music] [TS]

00:00:25   I'm suffering from pretty bad jetlag I [TS]

00:00:29   thought that I had mostly gotten over [TS]

00:00:31   jetlag as a problem in my life like it [TS]

00:00:33   takes me a day or two and I just we [TS]

00:00:35   think you thought you thought you saw [TS]

00:00:37   jet lag no this is a general problem I [TS]

00:00:39   wouldn't say that I feel like I solved [TS]

00:00:41   it but it's more that like I've gotten [TS]

00:00:45   used to my pattern that if I just do [TS]

00:00:47   things in a certain way for like a day [TS]

00:00:49   or two just like make sure I stay awake [TS]

00:00:51   embrace the fact that I won't sleep the [TS]

00:00:53   next day wake up at a normal time and [TS]

00:00:55   then I'm good that's usually how I deal [TS]

00:00:58   with this stuff no matter where I am [TS]

00:00:59   like even if I'm on the west coast it [TS]

00:01:01   just takes me like two days and I can [TS]

00:01:03   get back into it and that's mostly [TS]

00:01:04   because I tend to live like close to [TS]

00:01:08   East Coast time in London you know like [TS]

00:01:11   I'm usually like going to bed at 2:00 [TS]

00:01:13   a.m. and I wake up yeah you stay up [TS]

00:01:16   pretty late yeah so so it helps me [TS]

00:01:18   adjust relatively well but this time [TS]

00:01:22   this time is not good like I've been [TS]

00:01:24   home for three or four days and I'm just [TS]

00:01:26   not sleeping and I feel terrible most of [TS]

00:01:30   the day and then like it comes to about [TS]

00:01:32   7 o'clock at night and I'm wired and [TS]

00:01:34   ready to go yeah you hope you have all [TS]

00:01:41   of my sympathies jet lag jet lag is the [TS]

00:01:45   absolute worst surely like how is nobody [TS]

00:01:47   fixed this problem [TS]

00:01:48   why isn't there like a surefire pill to [TS]

00:01:53   take or some kind of beverage to drink [TS]

00:01:56   it just fixes it yeah that is what I [TS]

00:02:00   want I feel like there should be some [TS]

00:02:01   kind of refreshing beverage you could [TS]

00:02:02   just drink and it's like oh great they [TS]

00:02:04   just give it to you when you get off the [TS]

00:02:05   plane yeah now it turned out all I [TS]

00:02:08   needed all I needed was some [TS]

00:02:09   electrolytes at the right time [TS]

00:02:11   and now now I'm set but now I've heard [TS]

00:02:15   that there are like one of those [TS]

00:02:16   Dreamliner planes changes the oxygen [TS]

00:02:18   level and apparently that's supposed to [TS]

00:02:20   help I'm not sure if I believe that [TS]

00:02:21   either but obviously jet lag is one of [TS]

00:02:24   those things because the symptoms are [TS]

00:02:27   like they're hard to define symptoms and [TS]

00:02:30   they're slightly different for everybody [TS]

00:02:31   and this this then breeds a whole world [TS]

00:02:35   of home remedies and just superstition [TS]

00:02:41   around what works or what doesn't work [TS]

00:02:42   just stand on your head and count [TS]

00:02:44   backwards from ten you fixed it [TS]

00:02:47   I I have tried so many so many different [TS]

00:02:51   things and I just I have found nothing [TS]

00:02:54   nothing has any consistent success with [TS]

00:02:57   trying to minimize it okay I guess [TS]

00:02:59   asterisk the only thing I have found [TS]

00:03:02   that successfully works is simply [TS]

00:03:04   refusing to acknowledge the time zone of [TS]

00:03:05   the place that you are in that works [TS]

00:03:07   yeah that no I have found no doesn't [TS]

00:03:11   work for a month though like I feel like [TS]

00:03:13   I would have not really gotten anything [TS]

00:03:15   useful done if I spent four weeks on [TS]

00:03:18   London time in various places in the US [TS]

00:03:21   I feel like I would have I really should [TS]

00:03:23   have just not made that trip if that's [TS]

00:03:24   what I was planning to do right yeah [TS]

00:03:25   it's impossible it's not gonna work out [TS]

00:03:28   for you Mike so so I I have I have [TS]

00:03:33   nothing to help you with this you were [TS]

00:03:35   supposed to be my long-term travel guru [TS]

00:03:37   oh and this is this is the one thing I [TS]

00:03:41   truly need you know is this it this is [TS]

00:03:45   the one this is the one thing that you [TS]

00:03:47   truly need and I have I have failed to [TS]

00:03:48   deliver on this you didn't help me with [TS]

00:03:50   laundry really and or just dealing with [TS]

00:03:53   emotional crawler so this was the one [TS]

00:03:56   thing that I desperately need from you [TS]

00:03:58   that I was hoping for real gist [TS]

00:04:00   CGP grey Brandt life hack and I have [TS]

00:04:03   received just deal with it and or don't [TS]

00:04:08   change your time which is you know never [TS]

00:04:11   of those things neither of those things [TS]

00:04:13   are helpful to me now right yeah no I I [TS]

00:04:16   I understand the reason why I was also [TS]

00:04:18   asking like I need your help with this [TS]

00:04:20   is because one I too would like a [TS]

00:04:22   solution to jetlag that it's in [TS]

00:04:24   magical but the other thing is I have I [TS]

00:04:29   have also since this summer I have not [TS]

00:04:32   been dealing with jetlag like I've been [TS]

00:04:35   home long enough that jetlag is not a [TS]

00:04:37   problem [TS]

00:04:38   but what I have been dealing with is [TS]

00:04:41   clearly my whole sleep cycle is just [TS]

00:04:44   messed up from an entire summer of [TS]

00:04:47   strain schedules and frequent travel and [TS]

00:04:50   it's not jetlag but it's kind of a [TS]

00:04:54   virtual jetlag when you're trying to [TS]

00:04:56   simply iron out your sleep schedule and [TS]

00:04:59   this has been the like the bane of my [TS]

00:05:03   last several weeks is is just trying to [TS]

00:05:06   get my brain back into what I know is [TS]

00:05:09   the optimal schedule for me for work and [TS]

00:05:11   for happiness and it's just like I [TS]

00:05:12   cannot I cannot do it like I can feel my [TS]

00:05:16   brain resisting getting put back into a [TS]

00:05:20   regular schedule after two months three [TS]

00:05:23   months without a regular schedule and as [TS]

00:05:26   well for me the irony is not lost upon [TS]

00:05:28   the fact that I have returned home with [TS]

00:05:30   this terrible sleep cycle and what is [TS]

00:05:32   probably the busiest two weeks of my [TS]

00:05:34   year these two weeks are the busiest two [TS]

00:05:35   weeks of your year iPhone season oh of [TS]

00:05:38   course I was thinking I was thinking why [TS]

00:05:41   is Mike so busy in early September [TS]

00:05:44   but yes by the time of course episode [TS]

00:05:47   comes out the iPhone will have been [TS]

00:05:49   shown to the world or will about to be [TS]

00:05:51   shown to the world so by the time most [TS]

00:05:54   people hear this they're even getting [TS]

00:05:55   ready for an iPhone keno or have already [TS]

00:05:57   seen it that's exciting so they're [TS]

00:06:00   living in a future where we have or do [TS]

00:06:04   not have face unlocking we have or do [TS]

00:06:06   not have touch ID and a big screen you [TS]

00:06:09   know that the people they know gray they [TS]

00:06:11   had they lured that over us right now [TS]

00:06:13   we're stuck in the past we're stuck in [TS]

00:06:15   the past [TS]

00:06:15   yeah although somehow while we're [TS]

00:06:18   recording this show it feels like we're [TS]

00:06:20   already in in that glorious new iPhone [TS]

00:06:23   future yeah so while I'm talking to you [TS]

00:06:25   right now it feels slightly like [TS]

00:06:26   time-traveling but it isn't but yes of [TS]

00:06:30   course for for you in particular for a [TS]

00:06:33   man who does so many tech and tech [TS]

00:06:36   adjacent shows [TS]

00:06:37   would be the busiest season and not a [TS]

00:06:40   good time to have a bunch of jet lag [TS]

00:06:42   interfering with the rest of your work [TS]

00:06:44   no luckily they didn't have the event or [TS]

00:06:47   announced the event before I came home [TS]

00:06:49   like who or that it just didn't overlap [TS]

00:06:52   that like it badly luckily when they [TS]

00:06:54   announced it they announced it was like [TS]

00:06:56   it's gonna be in two weeks time so I was [TS]

00:06:57   able to just come home and then try and [TS]

00:07:00   deal with myself and then get back to [TS]

00:07:02   work again so unfortunately I will just [TS]

00:07:05   I will just live with my weird sleep [TS]

00:07:07   cycle for now and hopefully in October I [TS]

00:07:11   will fixed it ready to go back to the US [TS]

00:07:13   again so hooray pray for her jet lag I [TS]

00:07:18   guess by the time that I get this thing [TS]

00:07:23   fixed I'll have to break it again this [TS]

00:07:25   is what happens this is what happens [TS]

00:07:27   when you have to do a bunch of travel [TS]

00:07:29   it's just it's it's frustrating and and [TS]

00:07:32   this cut this kind of thing really does [TS]

00:07:35   take a while to sort out like getting it [TS]

00:07:38   getting into I find for me anyway [TS]

00:07:41   personally like maybe the number one [TS]

00:07:44   predictor of how well a day is going to [TS]

00:07:48   go is if I got up at the time that I'm [TS]

00:07:51   supposed to like if you had to if you [TS]

00:07:53   had to take a single data point and see [TS]

00:07:56   if it was most correlated with what I [TS]

00:07:59   would consider a productive day that [TS]

00:08:00   would be by far and away the single data [TS]

00:08:02   point that would matter most and it's it [TS]

00:08:06   is very because uh like unlike unlike so [TS]

00:08:11   many other things in our working life [TS]

00:08:13   sleep is a thing that is is like you you [TS]

00:08:17   really have no control over it you can't [TS]

00:08:21   you can't just knuckle down and and get [TS]

00:08:25   to sleep harder then you're trying to [TS]

00:08:27   get to sleep at this very moment and at [TS]

00:08:30   least for me like if you wake up and [TS]

00:08:32   your body wasn't ready to wake up it [TS]

00:08:34   feels like you have woken up dead it's [TS]

00:08:37   it's just awful and it's it's so it's so [TS]

00:08:39   hard to do anything productive I don't [TS]

00:08:42   know it's like a thing that is just [TS]

00:08:43   interesting that at least I find that as [TS]

00:08:46   as time has gone on like this matters [TS]

00:08:49   more and more as a thing that is is [TS]

00:08:52   super important it is the thing that I [TS]

00:08:53   focus on and try to keep on a regular [TS]

00:08:57   schedule but yeah after after the summer [TS]

00:09:01   it like this is a this is a thing that I [TS]

00:09:03   have personally been struggling to get [TS]

00:09:05   back into a regular schedule for awhile [TS]

00:09:07   but it's like I can just I can feel my [TS]

00:09:09   brain just pulling against against the [TS]

00:09:12   regular schedule even though of course [TS]

00:09:14   like it would be better for me in the [TS]

00:09:16   long run but like it doesn't that [TS]

00:09:18   doesn't help you in the short run if you [TS]

00:09:20   could choose to not sleep but lose 25% [TS]

00:09:25   of your productivity would you take that [TS]

00:09:28   wait I get an additional third of my [TS]

00:09:32   life back so you get all the time back [TS]

00:09:34   okay but you want 25% less productive [TS]

00:09:38   would you take that deal [TS]

00:09:40   yeah yeah that seems like a great deal [TS]

00:09:43   I'm getting 33 I'm getting a third of my [TS]

00:09:46   life back and I'm only losing a quarter [TS]

00:09:48   of productivity but it seems like an [TS]

00:09:50   amazing deal okay what if you lost a [TS]

00:09:52   third of your productivity so it just it [TS]

00:09:55   just ended up balancing out would you [TS]

00:09:57   take it then okay so when you say when [TS]

00:10:00   you say balance out you mean I get the [TS]

00:10:03   same amount of stuff done that I get [TS]

00:10:05   done now but I'm also I never have to [TS]

00:10:07   sleep yeah yeah what's the trade-off who [TS]

00:10:11   wouldn't take that but I feel like [TS]

00:10:12   people enjoy sleeping right I thought [TS]

00:10:14   that this is why I'm assuming so there [TS]

00:10:15   are people in or that just will prefer [TS]

00:10:17   to sleep if wishes have it all just [TS]

00:10:19   ended up working out the same just take [TS]

00:10:21   the sleep but like I would say even take [TS]

00:10:23   the the option where it balances out [TS]

00:10:25   because I would just end up playing more [TS]

00:10:26   video games or whatever yeah I mean I [TS]

00:10:31   mean I guess I guess I could say in a [TS]

00:10:34   minor in a very minor way I enjoy sleep [TS]

00:10:37   but that's only because sleep is it gets [TS]

00:10:39   it's the your brain makes you like it [TS]

00:10:41   because it's the solution to a problem [TS]

00:10:43   I only ever enjoy after has happened I [TS]

00:10:46   never want to do it yeah yeah oh yes [TS]

00:10:48   right now actually right now saying that [TS]

00:10:53   I it's half past 4:00 in the afternoon [TS]

00:10:55   might be pretty feel like I could do [TS]

00:10:57   have a good nap right now but I guess [TS]

00:11:00   the answer to your question is now [TS]

00:11:01   like I don't I don't feel like oh asleep [TS]

00:11:03   is the best it's like I would much [TS]

00:11:06   rather have the hours back I don't I [TS]

00:11:09   don't see sleep as a recreational [TS]

00:11:11   activity that is worth a third of my [TS]

00:11:14   life and I can't imagine anybody would [TS]

00:11:16   would see it that way I think it has a [TS]

00:11:21   lot to do with how you'd like to spend [TS]

00:11:23   your time right like part of it is [TS]

00:11:28   because I would prefer to be working as [TS]

00:11:30   much as I can when I'm awake and then [TS]

00:11:32   spend the rest of the time just playing [TS]

00:11:35   video games and doing the things that I [TS]

00:11:37   don't want to do but not everybody wants [TS]

00:11:39   to to work to that amount so I guess [TS]

00:11:42   like if all you wanted to do was put in [TS]

00:11:43   eight hours six hours seven hours of [TS]

00:11:46   work a day or whatever it is that you [TS]

00:11:47   end up putting in and you're cool with [TS]

00:11:48   that like that's that's the way that you [TS]

00:11:50   want to be then maybe you would want to [TS]

00:11:52   sleep yeah but you could still do spend [TS]

00:11:54   it as recreation time yeah but I assume [TS]

00:11:56   that there are some people that enjoy [TS]

00:11:58   the practice of sleep right they just [TS]

00:12:01   like get into bed and cozying up and [TS]

00:12:03   just just going away for a bit I don't [TS]

00:12:06   think that's cortex listeners I think [TS]

00:12:08   the people who listen to cortex they're [TS]

00:12:10   not people who are who are big enjoyers [TS]

00:12:12   of sleep I want to know in the reddit in [TS]

00:12:15   the reddit I just want to know sleep on [TS]

00:12:17   those leaps so you gotta tell me sleep [TS]

00:12:18   on those sleep I'm interested to know [TS]

00:12:20   this now if people would like to sleep [TS]

00:12:23   or what wouldn't like to sleep I'll tell [TS]

00:12:25   you what I'll do I will post in the [TS]

00:12:26   reddit just a simple survey that you can [TS]

00:12:29   click a link it will take you somewhere [TS]

00:12:31   I just want to get a idea now sleep on [TS]

00:12:33   those loop you'll be in the reddit [TS]

00:12:35   thread you'll find it and of course all [TS]

00:12:37   of the home remedies for how to take [TS]

00:12:39   care of jet lag unsolicited but [TS]

00:12:41   doubtless will be there you need to [TS]

00:12:42   sleep Mike can take a little nap during [TS]

00:12:44   the show yeah I'll uh [TS]

00:12:46   I sure I see what's next in our document [TS]

00:12:49   I'll just get you talking and I'll pop [TS]

00:12:51   in towards the end assuming that I [TS]

00:12:54   figure I know what you're gonna say so [TS]

00:12:56   I'll just go away this is so far behind [TS]

00:12:59   me I'll just go and sit there for a [TS]

00:13:01   little bit [TS]

00:13:02   mm-hmm and then I'll come back when [TS]

00:13:04   you're done with your frustrations I've [TS]

00:13:06   just come back from visiting my parents [TS]

00:13:08   they've moved house and of course [TS]

00:13:10   setting up a new house is big [TS]

00:13:13   there's lots of things to do and one of [TS]

00:13:15   the things you need to do when you're [TS]

00:13:16   setting up a house is get a mattress for [TS]

00:13:19   the guest bedroom now of course since my [TS]

00:13:21   parents listen to cortex there was only [TS]

00:13:23   one choice of mattress that they were [TS]

00:13:25   going to get the Casper mattress was [TS]

00:13:27   delivered before my arrival but as I had [TS]

00:13:30   never tried one in person they saved it [TS]

00:13:32   for me so when I got home on the very [TS]

00:13:35   first day there was no mattress setup [TS]

00:13:37   for me to sleep on but there was a big [TS]

00:13:39   Casper box in the room and together we [TS]

00:13:43   opened it up it was a genuinely exciting [TS]

00:13:46   family event to open the box [TS]

00:13:48   my dad and I arranged the mattress on [TS]

00:13:50   the bed we removed the plastic covering [TS]

00:13:52   and just like Casper promises the [TS]

00:13:56   mattress self inflates with in mere [TS]

00:13:59   moments it was ready to go that night at [TS]

00:14:02   the end of a day of long travels I [TS]

00:14:04   crawled into bed onto the Casper [TS]

00:14:06   mattress for the first time how would [TS]

00:14:08   mattress be without Springs inside how [TS]

00:14:11   would a mattress be that came delivered [TS]

00:14:13   in the mail well I'm here to report that [TS]

00:14:17   it was good you could even say that it [TS]

00:14:19   had just the right sink just the right [TS]

00:14:22   bounce I was very glad that my parents [TS]

00:14:24   had not carted with them the old guest [TS]

00:14:26   mattress that I used to sleep on full of [TS]

00:14:28   Springs and lacking in comfort the [TS]

00:14:31   Casper mattress vastly superior and that [TS]

00:14:34   is as it should be the Casper mattress [TS]

00:14:36   was designed by a team of 20 engineers [TS]

00:14:39   to make sure that their memory foam and [TS]

00:14:41   open-cell layer for maximum comfort were [TS]

00:14:44   designed just so now if you're wondering [TS]

00:14:47   about bonding a mattress through the [TS]

00:14:48   mail Casper has made it completely [TS]

00:14:50   risk-free there's free delivery and free [TS]

00:14:53   returns to the US Canada and the UK and [TS]

00:14:57   when you set up that mattress Casper [TS]

00:14:58   gives you 100 nights to try it out [TS]

00:15:01   you'll only need one before you realize [TS]

00:15:03   how great it is but if there's any doubt [TS]

00:15:06   in your mind you can spend 25% of a year [TS]

00:15:11   sleeping on that mattress to make sure [TS]

00:15:13   it's perfect for you [TS]

00:15:14   and if for whatever reason you don't [TS]

00:15:16   love it they'll pick it up and refund [TS]

00:15:18   you everything so you have nothing to [TS]

00:15:20   lose except the poor quality sleep [TS]

00:15:22   you're getting on that Springfield [TS]

00:15:24   mattress that you're currently sleeping [TS]

00:15:26   on [TS]

00:15:26   now that you've decided you're getting a [TS]

00:15:28   Casper mattress all you need to do is go [TS]

00:15:31   to Casper comm slash cortex and use the [TS]

00:15:34   code cortex at checkout to get $50 [TS]

00:15:37   towards any mattress purchase that's [TS]

00:15:39   Casper comm slash cortex to get $50 off [TS]

00:15:43   thanks to Casper for supporting this [TS]

00:15:45   show and thanks to Casper for giving me [TS]

00:15:47   excellent night sleep at my parents [TS]

00:15:49   house so of course with the imminent [TS]

00:15:54   release of a new iPhone comes a new [TS]

00:15:57   release of iOS iOS 11 is just around the [TS]

00:16:01   corner it's going to be with us soon and [TS]

00:16:05   we have because we're the kind of people [TS]

00:16:08   that we are Mike we've been running the [TS]

00:16:10   betas for awhile I told myself like I [TS]

00:16:14   tell myself every year look I'm not [TS]

00:16:16   going to install the beta I'm gonna wait [TS]

00:16:18   a while but of course I have to give in [TS]

00:16:20   so I've been running the beta since the [TS]

00:16:22   very first public beta that was [TS]

00:16:24   available and I was not able to resist [TS]

00:16:26   and just before it goes public I thought [TS]

00:16:30   this is this is kind of a good a good [TS]

00:16:32   time to talk about a couple of little [TS]

00:16:36   frustrations and also what's going on [TS]

00:16:40   with the doc and our home screens what [TS]

00:16:44   do you say Mike are you there Mike I [TS]

00:16:46   mean anytime you talk about home screen [TS]

00:16:48   so I'm ready to go you said the magic [TS]

00:16:50   word revival [TS]

00:16:52   let's do this I think is worth [TS]

00:16:56   mentioning for a piece of long-term [TS]

00:16:57   follow-up that you did not get your wish [TS]

00:17:00   right of the opening of applications via [TS]

00:17:02   a keyboard shortcut that nobody either [TS]

00:17:04   maybe people listened to you but [TS]

00:17:06   nobody's put it into place I'm pausing [TS]

00:17:10   here for a moment to think about how [TS]

00:17:11   much I can say I'll put it in vague ways [TS]

00:17:13   that I I could say that I know this has [TS]

00:17:17   been received and that there may be [TS]

00:17:21   reasons that it doesn't happen that [TS]

00:17:25   maybe I don't necessarily agree with but [TS]

00:17:27   I don't know who knows who knows knows [TS]

00:17:29   if an email huh could have been received [TS]

00:17:32   or sent no no one could know there is no [TS]

00:17:35   way of knowing yeah who knows if like a [TS]

00:17:38   frustrating non answer was received [TS]

00:17:39   nobody know [TS]

00:17:40   certainly not me a week anyway so yeah I [TS]

00:17:43   was I was hoping last time that before [TS]

00:17:45   just just barely just just like the [TS]

00:17:48   tiniest of of keyboard shortcuts added [TS]

00:17:51   and that hasn't happened and I don't [TS]

00:17:53   think it's going to happen in the next [TS]

00:17:55   two weeks or week until the final [TS]

00:17:58   version comes out so we can assume that [TS]

00:18:00   that's that's definitely not the case I [TS]

00:18:02   think we can feel pretty sure the fact [TS]

00:18:04   that we are currently at beta 10 we're [TS]

00:18:07   good we this is what it's gonna be most [TS]

00:18:09   likely yeah I think so so so around this [TS]

00:18:12   one of the biggest changes with iOS on [TS]

00:18:15   the iPad is the introduction of the dock [TS]

00:18:18   on the bottom screen and for someone [TS]

00:18:21   like me and someone like you who spends [TS]

00:18:23   a lot of time working on the iPad I feel [TS]

00:18:25   like that that dock on the bottom [TS]

00:18:28   totally changes everything [TS]

00:18:30   like it it really makes the iPad a very [TS]

00:18:34   different feeling device to work with [TS]

00:18:36   than on the previous version of iOS and [TS]

00:18:41   I've been having just some some [TS]

00:18:43   interesting interesting things about how [TS]

00:18:46   do i how do I arrange my dock now on my [TS]

00:18:50   iPad how do I arrange my homescreen on [TS]

00:18:53   on my phone and I feel like I'm I'm [TS]

00:18:55   slowly going crazy because I can't I [TS]

00:18:58   can't figure out what it is that I want [TS]

00:19:02   to do even though I've been working with [TS]

00:19:04   this for a long period of time so I took [TS]

00:19:06   some screenshots today like would you [TS]

00:19:09   like to see what my current setup looks [TS]

00:19:10   like my various devices you know I want [TS]

00:19:13   to see you don't have to ask me you [TS]

00:19:15   could send me a message it's just on a [TS]

00:19:17   random day in the middle of the night [TS]

00:19:18   and I'd be happy to get them you know [TS]

00:19:20   anytime if you have your iPad around I [TS]

00:19:23   am legitimately curious to see what your [TS]

00:19:26   home screen looks like um I feel like [TS]

00:19:29   I'm very open to trying to figure out [TS]

00:19:30   how how have people set up things on [TS]

00:19:33   their iPads and on their various devices [TS]

00:19:35   do you want both oh just one hashtag [TS]

00:19:38   multipad lifestyle and what whatever you [TS]

00:19:40   will give me I'm going to give you three [TS]

00:19:42   home screen shots and you can give me [TS]

00:19:44   back whatever you okay so while yours [TS]

00:19:46   come through to me I'm gonna go and get [TS]

00:19:48   my I dive from the other room because I [TS]

00:19:50   only have one of them with me right now [TS]

00:19:51   and then I can send the both to you yeah [TS]

00:19:53   you go do that [TS]

00:19:55   [Music] [TS]

00:20:06   okay so screenshots have been exchanged [TS]

00:20:09   screenshots have been exchanged I have [TS]

00:20:12   yours you have mine okay let me talk [TS]

00:20:15   about what's what's going on in my mind [TS]

00:20:16   here my man [TS]

00:20:17   so in iOS 11 especially on the iPad that [TS]

00:20:21   the doc is of paramount importance it's [TS]

00:20:26   the way to get to your apps because if [TS]

00:20:31   you have an app that's on the dock you [TS]

00:20:33   can just drag it from the dock right on [TS]

00:20:36   to the screen yep and so that you can go [TS]

00:20:37   into the multi app mode or you can have [TS]

00:20:39   it hover over [TS]

00:20:41   whereas apps that are on your home [TS]

00:20:44   screen to me the home screen now becomes [TS]

00:20:47   like a dead space on your iPad their [TS]

00:20:50   apps that you can launch but only if you [TS]

00:20:53   are already at the home screen and [TS]

00:20:56   there's no there's no way to like get to [TS]

00:20:58   the home screen to get to an app to then [TS]

00:21:00   put it into the multi view mode so [TS]

00:21:03   because of this I have decided that on [TS]

00:21:06   my iPads the home screen is dead to me [TS]

00:21:08   huh I don't I don't want to put a single [TS]

00:21:13   app on my iPad home screen because I [TS]

00:21:16   feel like what is the point of this all [TS]

00:21:19   it is is a worse app launcher there's [TS]

00:21:23   there's no there's no point to this [TS]

00:21:25   at all so I am I am I have banned all [TS]

00:21:28   app icons from the home screen on my [TS]

00:21:32   iPads the dock or nothing [TS]

00:21:35   you took the nuclear approach well yeah [TS]

00:21:37   I actually don't think this is the [TS]

00:21:39   nuclear approach because I feel like the [TS]

00:21:41   architecture of iOS 11 on the iPad so [TS]

00:21:47   encourages you to use the the dock that [TS]

00:21:50   it feels it feels like a penalty having [TS]

00:21:53   apps almost anywhere else but here's [TS]

00:21:56   what I'm here's where I'm going crazy [TS]

00:21:57   Mike because the iPhone doesn't work [TS]

00:22:00   this way oh okay right again I wanted to [TS]

00:22:04   say where we are in the world right now [TS]

00:22:06   mm-hmm [TS]

00:22:07   because it might we don't know yet right [TS]

00:22:09   we just as this is as we stand right now [TS]

00:22:12   who knows what could happen the next [TS]

00:22:13   iPhone but yeah go on the iPhone doesn't [TS]

00:22:15   work in this way I understand that [TS]

00:22:17   yeah the iPhone doesn't work like this [TS]

00:22:20   now there may be if there is a merciful [TS]

00:22:25   God in the universe mm-hmm [TS]

00:22:27   when the next phone comes out the next [TS]

00:22:30   phone may work more similarly to the way [TS]

00:22:33   the iPads do yeah there may be a little [TS]

00:22:35   dock that swipes up from the bottom you [TS]

00:22:38   know it could be better when the next [TS]

00:22:40   iPhone come one can only hope one can [TS]

00:22:44   only hope but you know what it's it's [TS]

00:22:45   not gonna be it's not gonna be the same [TS]

00:22:47   because there's not going to be a [TS]

00:22:49   universe in which you can put a tie cons [TS]

00:22:53   in the dock on your phone yeah it's only [TS]

00:22:55   gonna be full right and maybe a fold of [TS]

00:22:57   still that's gonna be the same yeah yeah [TS]

00:23:00   and there's not going to be multitasking [TS]

00:23:03   on the phone presumably huh so lots of [TS]

00:23:07   things lots of things work differently [TS]

00:23:09   so I I feel like I am trapped and [TS]

00:23:13   trapped in this universe where [TS]

00:23:16   consistency is not possible that there [TS]

00:23:18   there is no there is no solution that [TS]

00:23:22   works everywhere the same that I want it [TS]

00:23:25   to work I feel like when I'm using my [TS]

00:23:26   phone I'm losing my mind about how do I [TS]

00:23:29   launch apps on my phone versus launching [TS]

00:23:31   apps on my iPad and as a result of this [TS]

00:23:36   like what you are seeing what you were [TS]

00:23:39   seeing in these screenshots is just my [TS]

00:23:41   current state of arranging things which [TS]

00:23:45   is not good but what I can't tell you [TS]

00:23:47   well well I got what I I don't even want [TS]

00:23:49   to know is how how many different ways I [TS]

00:23:52   have tried arranging things how many [TS]

00:23:56   different placements I have tried like [TS]

00:23:58   different fault like I'm going crazy [TS]

00:24:00   because there's a lack of consistency [TS]

00:24:02   because as listeners to the show we'll [TS]

00:24:04   know we've talked about home screens a [TS]

00:24:06   few times and there's been something [TS]

00:24:10   that for for the entirety of my iOS use [TS]

00:24:14   has been exactly the same which is three [TS]

00:24:18   icons in the dock and those icons have [TS]

00:24:21   been incredibly stable notes launch [TS]

00:24:25   Center pro and OmniFocus and I felt like [TS]

00:24:28   that was a real a real sin [TS]

00:24:31   during location two here is a thing that [TS]

00:24:34   is consistent across all of the devices [TS]

00:24:37   that you use there's like a little a [TS]

00:24:39   little launching station for the things [TS]

00:24:41   that you want to access quickly and [TS]

00:24:43   consistently everywhere and it's the [TS]

00:24:45   same on all of the devices and then [TS]

00:24:47   above that because I live the multipad [TS]

00:24:50   lifestyle and because I have a phone as [TS]

00:24:52   well you can arrange the icons that you [TS]

00:24:54   use in particular on this device on the [TS]

00:24:58   home screen all right but it's like but [TS]

00:25:00   all of that is gone now so I'm just [TS]

00:25:03   going crazy I I deconstructed my dock [TS]

00:25:07   I've put some new stuff in there and I'm [TS]

00:25:09   trying to figure out what to do but I'm [TS]

00:25:11   just I'm going crazy like I'm going [TS]

00:25:13   absolutely crazy and I don't know what [TS]

00:25:15   to do alright so episode 2 episode we've [TS]

00:25:18   switched the crazy [TS]

00:25:19   alright that's it's all on you now buddy [TS]

00:25:22   I have we have a lot I think that we [TS]

00:25:25   want to get to about this today but I [TS]

00:25:28   just we need to just go over okay we're [TS]

00:25:32   gonna come back to the dock alright and [TS]

00:25:33   like kind of what that is but I just [TS]

00:25:35   have a bunch of questions first because [TS]

00:25:37   I'm looking at these images and it's all [TS]

00:25:39   yeah here's like you you ask questions [TS]

00:25:42   away because I don't even know what's [TS]

00:25:43   happening in my world anyway so my god I [TS]

00:25:45   don't I don't know what I don't [TS]

00:25:46   understand from a fundamental [TS]

00:25:48   perspective is you're complaining about [TS]

00:25:50   consistency but you have inconsistent [TS]

00:25:52   apps in both the dogs on your iPad's I [TS]

00:25:54   don't get that I don't get it like you [TS]

00:25:57   can look at my screen shots and you'll [TS]

00:25:58   see the docks are the same the home [TS]

00:26:00   screens stiffer in slight ways depending [TS]

00:26:02   on what I do on those iPads but the [TS]

00:26:05   docks are the same what I'm putting in [TS]

00:26:07   them and where they go and you have like [TS]

00:26:09   all different apps in all different [TS]

00:26:11   placements and like some apps are on the [TS]

00:26:14   dock on one and not on the other like [TS]

00:26:16   there is no consistency and you are [TS]

00:26:18   making it inconsistent for yourself okay [TS]

00:26:21   Evernote look at Evernote just sitting [TS]

00:26:23   there in the dock my word where are we [TS]

00:26:25   in 2017 sitting in that in the dock [TS]

00:26:27   laughing at me I know next - what is [TS]

00:26:31   that that red fox arrow thing what's [TS]

00:26:34   that oh that that's a wikipedia viewer [TS]

00:26:36   oh yeah I've seen those before it's [TS]

00:26:39   really good [TS]

00:26:40   it's called vv4 wiki I think is the [TS]

00:26:42   search for it [TS]

00:26:44   so it's a really great Wikipedia viewer [TS]

00:26:46   so here's where I'm trying to focus on [TS]

00:26:48   consistency in my world okay step one I [TS]

00:26:51   decided that it was it was time to let [TS]

00:26:56   launch Center Pro go okay which threat [TS]

00:27:00   may be one of the longest running apps [TS]

00:27:02   on my phone that has changed the least [TS]

00:27:04   it's like that has been around for [TS]

00:27:07   forever we were just talking about it [TS]

00:27:09   about the icon well well this is why I'm [TS]

00:27:11   on the episode out of time it comes up [TS]

00:27:15   as a thing and I didn't want to specify [TS]

00:27:17   anything at that point in time but I had [TS]

00:27:19   already when we recorded that show [TS]

00:27:20   gotten rid of Launch Center right [TS]

00:27:22   because on an episode out of time you [TS]

00:27:23   cannot acknowledge at the time who knows [TS]

00:27:27   when it a guy's is that the rule for [TS]

00:27:29   episodes at a times I don't understand [TS]

00:27:30   how that works [TS]

00:27:31   so I got rid of that now I have tried I [TS]

00:27:33   have tried other launchers and I think [TS]

00:27:36   other launchers are probably fine for [TS]

00:27:39   other people mm-hm but alright it's like [TS]

00:27:42   I don't want to denigrate other [TS]

00:27:43   launchers that people might use because [TS]

00:27:45   they are they are good and they do but [TS]

00:27:46   like there's bunch of things I didn't [TS]

00:27:48   like and I'm very picky about this and [TS]

00:27:50   there's like the reason I had stuck with [TS]

00:27:51   launch Center Pro for as long as I had [TS]

00:27:53   is because I could it solved a [TS]

00:27:55   particular need very well so I was [TS]

00:27:56   thinking it through and realizing 95% of [TS]

00:28:00   what I was using launched Center Pro for [TS]

00:28:02   in the past year was really as a way to [TS]

00:28:07   kick off a bunch of workflows so I had a [TS]

00:28:10   whole bunch of stuff in the workflow app [TS]

00:28:11   and launch center Pro was just a faster [TS]

00:28:14   way to launch a workflow than going [TS]

00:28:16   directly into the workflow app itself [TS]

00:28:18   this what I'm about to say is going to [TS]

00:28:20   sound crazy to people but actually is I [TS]

00:28:23   think is great and is that the part of [TS]

00:28:25   the system on the happiest with is I [TS]

00:28:27   replaced launch Center Pro with a folder [TS]

00:28:32   that just has shortcuts to workflows [TS]

00:28:36   this is better the way you were doing it [TS]

00:28:38   was worse like opening launch Center Pro [TS]

00:28:41   to launch workflows is a I think a [TS]

00:28:45   slower way of doing it than what you're [TS]

00:28:46   currently doing which is to save because [TS]

00:28:49   you can save workflows to the iPhone [TS]

00:28:52   homescreen with like this weird hack of [TS]

00:28:54   Safari basically and this is quicker [TS]

00:28:57   having [TS]

00:28:57   folder there and then hittin the button [TS]

00:28:59   that's one less tap the reason I stuck [TS]

00:29:01   with LAN Center pro is as long as I did [TS]

00:29:03   is it was lightning fast to do it it [TS]

00:29:05   actually is a little bit slower with the [TS]

00:29:07   folder okay because apples like look at [TS]

00:29:10   our beautiful enemy okay Russian speed [TS]

00:29:13   okay yeah whereas especially if launch [TS]

00:29:16   Center Pro was still kept in memory it [TS]

00:29:18   was essentially instant so there's a [TS]

00:29:20   little bit of a speed trade-off here but [TS]

00:29:22   it's fine I still think this is a battle [TS]

00:29:24   way to do it though might not be faster [TS]

00:29:27   but I think this is this is cleaner but [TS]

00:29:29   yeah yeah so this is this is cleaner it [TS]

00:29:33   does have a disadvantage that I have to [TS]

00:29:35   manually arrange everything so that it's [TS]

00:29:38   the same on all of the devices there's [TS]

00:29:39   no syncing anymore the state of what the [TS]

00:29:42   launch center is but that's that's fine [TS]

00:29:44   that's a fine trade-off and if someone [TS]

00:29:46   looks in the screenshots what they will [TS]

00:29:48   see is dead center on all of my devices [TS]

00:29:52   there is a folder and that folder has [TS]

00:29:55   nothing but buttons which launch [TS]

00:29:57   workflow yeah it's it's dead center but [TS]

00:30:00   not always relative what do you mean not [TS]

00:30:02   always relative it's not relative to the [TS]

00:30:04   green and red okay no we'll get into [TS]

00:30:07   this in a second we'll get into this in [TS]

00:30:08   a second like right for a long time this [TS]

00:30:11   is like the onion of home screens were [TS]

00:30:13   in right now no but listen okay listen [TS]

00:30:15   listen look at those three screens yep [TS]

00:30:17   the workflow folder is that Center look [TS]

00:30:22   look at those the little dots that are [TS]

00:30:24   supposed to show you the home screen or [TS]

00:30:25   the widgets I can see that is the center [TS]

00:30:28   right it's fine the folder is directly [TS]

00:30:31   below those dots are as close as a [TS]

00:30:32   person can make it yes it is itis I'm [TS]

00:30:35   sorry it's not it's not perfectly [TS]

00:30:37   aligned because of some aesthetic [TS]

00:30:39   choices that Apple has made but we'll [TS]

00:30:42   just let that slide right now yeah that [TS]

00:30:43   is we aligned it's finally iPhone not [TS]

00:30:47   not not fine on the big iPad yeah not [TS]

00:30:50   not fine on the I on the iPad so that [TS]

00:30:52   doesn't bother you at all it does very [TS]

00:30:56   much so okay alright so this is this is [TS]

00:31:00   the anchor around which we're building [TS]

00:31:02   everything is gotten rid of Launch [TS]

00:31:04   Center Pro I have found an adequate [TS]

00:31:06   solution it's going to go in the center [TS]

00:31:08   on all of the devices this is where we [TS]

00:31:11   begin [TS]

00:31:11   my assumption here is that these are all [TS]

00:31:14   to launch most likely toggle actions [TS]

00:31:18   would be my assumption nothing in that [TS]

00:31:21   center folder is for toggle we'll get to [TS]

00:31:23   this okay good all right I was gonna be [TS]

00:31:25   in the discussion and I was gonna lose [TS]

00:31:27   my mind no actually uh most of those [TS]

00:31:34   Launch Center things are pre-programmed [TS]

00:31:36   stuff for OmniFocus and a like a couple [TS]

00:31:39   of other okay the purple once I assume I [TS]

00:31:41   OmniFocus and purple ones are OmniFocus [TS]

00:31:44   stuff that's cool that's all I really [TS]

00:31:45   need to know I just needed to know what [TS]

00:31:48   they did and that's enough for me it's [TS]

00:31:49   all inconsistent now because I haven't [TS]

00:31:51   quite decided on like what this new [TS]

00:31:53   setup is going to be so I haven't [TS]

00:31:54   worried about making sure it's [TS]

00:31:56   consistent on every single device but [TS]

00:31:58   I'll get there at some point I've just [TS]

00:31:59   noticed something else that you've done [TS]

00:32:01   okay what have you noticed in the iPad [TS]

00:32:03   folders you've put blank icons in there [TS]

00:32:06   so it's always the same yes okay so this [TS]

00:32:09   is this is one way this is one way I am [TS]

00:32:15   trying to force consistency out of an [TS]

00:32:19   operating system that is trying to force [TS]

00:32:21   me into an inconsistent state if you [TS]

00:32:23   want the three by three grid everywhere [TS]

00:32:25   because the thing with a launcher is [TS]

00:32:27   that it's muscle memory right it's [TS]

00:32:30   you're not like scanning and looking for [TS]

00:32:33   a thing you're trying to make it muscle [TS]

00:32:35   memory gosh so the iPhone only allows a [TS]

00:32:39   three by three grid in the folder so I I [TS]

00:32:42   am forcing a three by three grid in the [TS]

00:32:45   folder on the iPad but as you can see [TS]

00:32:48   that means the 3 by 3 grid is not [TS]

00:32:51   centered and it can't possibly be [TS]

00:32:53   centered because the iPads want a four [TS]

00:32:56   by four grid in the folder so this is [TS]

00:32:58   this is a trade-off I'm just going to [TS]

00:32:59   have to make that the grid will be [TS]

00:33:00   off-center but there's there's no [TS]

00:33:02   there's no way to manage that for the [TS]

00:33:04   launcher one and the muscle memory of [TS]

00:33:06   where the buttons are is vastly more [TS]

00:33:08   important all of these images are in our [TS]

00:33:10   show notes so you can play along at home [TS]

00:33:12   I just wanted to read yeah I think I [TS]

00:33:14   have to look at this yeah it does you [TS]

00:33:17   cannot conceptualize this unless you're [TS]

00:33:18   seeing it so you have to see it if [TS]

00:33:20   you're driving just wait till later [TS]

00:33:22   we're all good [TS]

00:33:24   you need to see this rethink number two [TS]

00:33:26   okay can't believe we're just done [TS]

00:33:28   number two okay I know you can't you [TS]

00:33:30   can't believe we're just not number two [TS]

00:33:31   I feel like I'm barely halfway through [TS]

00:33:33   whatever is going to happen like oh yeah [TS]

00:33:35   so I'm still so dissatisfied like we're [TS]

00:33:37   just solving our questions like this [TS]

00:33:39   things I keep seeing things that make me [TS]

00:33:41   love and I because I know what you're [TS]

00:33:43   doing but I just need to double check [TS]

00:33:45   thing number two that happened is [TS]

00:33:47   there's a change in iOS 11 which I [TS]

00:33:50   really like which is that you can put [TS]

00:33:53   notes in control center and so I [TS]

00:33:57   realized I don't need notes on the dock [TS]

00:33:59   anymore because the way I use notes is [TS]

00:34:03   probably different from the way almost [TS]

00:34:04   everybody uses notes and that I I use it [TS]

00:34:07   solely to just write down something and [TS]

00:34:10   then once a week I kind of go through [TS]

00:34:12   and call all these random pieces of text [TS]

00:34:15   throughout the week look I don't use [TS]

00:34:17   notes as an organizational system of any [TS]

00:34:20   kind notes is just I need to write [TS]

00:34:22   something down and I know future me will [TS]

00:34:25   do whatever is necessary with this piece [TS]

00:34:26   of text at a later point okay couple of [TS]

00:34:28   questions on that yeah are you writing [TS]

00:34:30   them down with a keyboard or with a [TS]

00:34:32   pencil with it with the keyboard all [TS]

00:34:35   most of it okay and so I'm assuming that [TS]

00:34:39   you're taking these things and either [TS]

00:34:41   putting them in a task manager or inside [TS]

00:34:44   of a project that you're already writing [TS]

00:34:46   and or inside of your beloved Evernote [TS]

00:34:48   will be myself yeah it's like it's just [TS]

00:34:51   anything right like if the simple case [TS]

00:34:54   like somebody recommends a movie I'm [TS]

00:34:55   like oh okay and I make it I'm making [TS]

00:34:56   over the movie title and then later I'll [TS]

00:34:59   properly sort that into like the place [TS]

00:35:00   where I keep a list of here's a bunch of [TS]

00:35:02   movies to watch or books that have been [TS]

00:35:03   recommended all right it's it's just [TS]

00:35:05   like little pieces of text that don't go [TS]

00:35:07   anywhere in particular and it's not [TS]

00:35:08   worth the effort of properly sorting [TS]

00:35:11   them at the time right okay this is [TS]

00:35:13   different to me where like if it's text [TS]

00:35:16   it goes in notes right if it's not a [TS]

00:35:18   task because tasks never go in notes it [TS]

00:35:21   always just like so I would have my list [TS]

00:35:24   of movies to see would be in notes for [TS]

00:35:26   example I know that that is the way most [TS]

00:35:28   people would use it but it's just it's [TS]

00:35:30   just not the way that I you sure I get [TS]

00:35:32   that if anybody uses the app called [TS]

00:35:34   drafts I use notes the way drafts is in [TS]

00:35:37   tended to be used like yes that's like a [TS]

00:35:40   little comparison there so it's not a [TS]

00:35:42   storage facility of any points a [TS]

00:35:44   starting point for text never the final [TS]

00:35:46   point yeah exactly [TS]

00:35:48   and I really like this little change in [TS]

00:35:50   iOS 11 that you can do it from control [TS]

00:35:52   center because it also means that it's [TS]

00:35:54   it's it's much more accessible much more [TS]

00:35:57   quickly in a bunch of scenario so I love [TS]

00:35:59   that the phone is locked and I can just [TS]

00:36:01   swipe up from control center and and go [TS]

00:36:04   to notes and type something and and it [TS]

00:36:06   just goes into the system and I never [TS]

00:36:07   even need to unlock the phone yeah [TS]

00:36:08   that's that's a great that's a great [TS]

00:36:09   thing that you can do that now yeah if [TS]

00:36:11   you want to set it up that way it is a [TS]

00:36:13   really nice addition and so that that [TS]

00:36:15   change meant [TS]

00:36:17   okay well notes doesn't need to be on [TS]

00:36:18   the dock anymore [TS]

00:36:20   right notes can just go away yeah and in [TS]

00:36:22   an interesting way that kind of [TS]

00:36:24   reinforces your use case it's almost [TS]

00:36:27   like it's designed exactly for that like [TS]

00:36:30   Oh someone just said a thing you want to [TS]

00:36:32   write something down really quickly and [TS]

00:36:33   you just want it to go into the system [TS]

00:36:35   are you not [TS]

00:36:36   you're not filing it at that point in [TS]

00:36:38   time so I'm glad about that [TS]

00:36:41   but again I'm all like muscle memory [TS]

00:36:42   because this is a thing that happens [TS]

00:36:44   lots so I want I just want to know that [TS]

00:36:48   whatever device I'm using I've built it [TS]

00:36:51   into my brain that oh the way you now [TS]

00:36:53   type down a thing is just pull up [TS]

00:36:56   control center hit new note and just [TS]

00:36:58   type it and done right so this is no [TS]

00:37:00   longer a dock first activity mm-hmm Omni [TS]

00:37:04   focus has also been removed from the [TS]

00:37:06   dock but this is a complicated thing [TS]

00:37:07   we'll just we'll just have to get get to [TS]

00:37:09   later right for very for various reasons [TS]

00:37:11   OmniFocus is not going to be on the dock [TS]

00:37:13   anymore but it's like I can't I can't [TS]

00:37:15   even articulate a fiower I phone you [TS]

00:37:16   mean yes it's not it's not on the dock [TS]

00:37:18   of the iPhone because it's on the dock [TS]

00:37:19   of one of the iPads I know I know and [TS]

00:37:22   it's reinforcing the inconsistency but [TS]

00:37:24   yes I know I know [TS]

00:37:26   yes that's like well just it's not gonna [TS]

00:37:27   be on the dock on the iPhone we'll just [TS]

00:37:29   we'll give it oh I just noticed is there [TS]

00:37:31   as well [TS]

00:37:32   Wow look at you would you'd look at you [TS]

00:37:35   mister to do pants you gotta go into [TS]

00:37:37   stuff we just stop jumping ahead you [TS]

00:37:42   shouldn't have given me the images you [TS]

00:37:43   know like I can't I can't help it [TS]

00:37:45   okay so there was then a long period of [TS]

00:37:48   thinking well what the hell goes on my [TS]

00:37:50   dog [TS]

00:37:50   now for a while I tried nothing on the [TS]

00:37:54   dock except that one folder but that [TS]

00:37:57   looks really dumb and it makes it makes [TS]

00:37:59   no sense on the iPads because again like [TS]

00:38:02   you're punished for not using the dock [TS]

00:38:04   on the iPads and just having the one [TS]

00:38:06   little launcher folder is is ridiculous [TS]

00:38:08   what I have eventually settled on for my [TS]

00:38:13   dock icons there's a green plus and [TS]

00:38:15   there's a red X and they're from I was [TS]

00:38:19   trying to think what is that what is the [TS]

00:38:20   thing that I now do the most in the day [TS]

00:38:24   I've replaced I've replaced my launcher [TS]

00:38:26   I've replaced the thing where I'm typing [TS]

00:38:28   in stuff what is the next most frequent [TS]

00:38:31   activity and of course that is [TS]

00:38:33   everybody's favorite topic time tracking [TS]

00:38:36   time tracking is the thing that I do the [TS]

00:38:39   most promise we won't talk about things [TS]

00:38:40   too long listeners I really I just want [TS]

00:38:42   you we will get through this as far as [TS]

00:38:45   quickly as we can but yes go on I [TS]

00:38:47   promise you that we will as well because [TS]

00:38:49   there isn't that much to say about it [TS]

00:38:50   except what do these two buttons do [TS]

00:38:52   they are also workflows yeah so the [TS]

00:38:56   green one simply launches may a master [TS]

00:39:00   workflow that allows me to very quickly [TS]

00:39:01   select what is the activity that I'm [TS]

00:39:03   doing right now this is what I'd assumed [TS]

00:39:05   they were and I thought that the middle [TS]

00:39:07   folder was related to just triggering [TS]

00:39:09   specific trackers but that that makes [TS]

00:39:12   sense like the green and red it make [TS]

00:39:14   perfect sense one is to start and one is [TS]

00:39:17   to stop I mean and I have these but [TS]

00:39:18   they're in I have them in my widgets in [TS]

00:39:21   Notification Center so this is a thing [TS]

00:39:23   that I had tried for a long time [TS]

00:39:25   workflow has a fantastic widget it's [TS]

00:39:28   really really great but basically in in [TS]

00:39:31   iOS 10 there was an option to say hey [TS]

00:39:34   your Notification Center it's dumb I [TS]

00:39:37   don't ever use it I don't care remember [TS]

00:39:39   what the thing I swipe down last time [TS]

00:39:41   was so if I've pulled down the widgets [TS]

00:39:45   always just have the widgets there but [TS]

00:39:47   iOS 11 seems really proud of their [TS]

00:39:49   Notification Center and they've removed [TS]

00:39:51   this option so I like in theory I would [TS]

00:39:55   want to use the widget to launch and to [TS]

00:39:59   stop my time tracking like across all [TS]

00:40:02   devices that'd be a way to do it [TS]

00:40:04   consists [TS]

00:40:04   gently but that that extra swipe really [TS]

00:40:07   annoys me every time doesn't it work if [TS]

00:40:10   you just swipe to the left okay but this [TS]

00:40:13   is this is a thing that then becomes a [TS]

00:40:15   little bit in my mind like it like an [TS]

00:40:17   inconsistent thing like which device am [TS]

00:40:20   i using how do i open up that device [TS]

00:40:23   like am i on the lock screen is the lock [TS]

00:40:26   screen open or is a lock screen not I [TS]

00:40:28   tried it with the widget but it's it's [TS]

00:40:32   just a little bit of an annoyance I [TS]

00:40:35   don't feel that it's also an annoyance [TS]

00:40:38   but here's the use case that here's the [TS]

00:40:41   use case that I will give you which is [TS]

00:40:42   I'm on the iPad doing something and I [TS]

00:40:46   want to trigger the timer okay yeah [TS]

00:40:49   where do I have to pull down I can't [TS]

00:40:51   home yeah it's right I can't yeah [TS]

00:40:54   there's like in so it's not the same [TS]

00:40:56   every time [TS]

00:40:57   and this it this again is where muscle [TS]

00:40:59   memory is really important like this is [TS]

00:41:00   an activity that I'm going to do dozens [TS]

00:41:03   of times a day it has to be something [TS]

00:41:07   that I just don't think about so that [TS]

00:41:10   that moment of being on the iPad with [TS]

00:41:12   the apps open is like I'd it's I have to [TS]

00:41:14   think about it for a second and now it's [TS]

00:41:16   now it's all ruined so that this is what [TS]

00:41:19   ended up with the like the the most [TS]

00:41:20   sensible thing to do was to put the time [TS]

00:41:23   tracking stuff in the dock and so I'm [TS]

00:41:26   thinking of it from the perspective of [TS]

00:41:28   the most space constrained device which [TS]

00:41:32   is the iPhone which you can only put [TS]

00:41:35   three icons in the dock if you want it [TS]

00:41:37   to look nice so now I have my three dock [TS]

00:41:40   icons and so now we come to the iPads [TS]

00:41:45   okay and so I have given you two [TS]

00:41:50   screenshots because we live the multipad [TS]

00:41:53   lifestyle ashtag [TS]

00:41:54   yes hashtag multi pad lifestyle the one [TS]

00:41:56   with the standard Apple wallpaper which [TS]

00:42:00   is like the exploding paint this is my [TS]

00:42:03   office iPad so this is the one that I'm [TS]

00:42:05   primarily using for writing and then the [TS]

00:42:08   one with the black sand beach this is [TS]

00:42:10   the everything else iPad okay so the [TS]

00:42:17   writing I've had is reasonably okay [TS]

00:42:20   because the use cases are are very [TS]

00:42:22   constrained and this is where I feel the [TS]

00:42:25   happiest because it's like I want to use [TS]

00:42:27   Ulysses to write I want to use good [TS]

00:42:30   notes for the physical writing I use [TS]

00:42:34   bear as a to organize a bunch of notes [TS]

00:42:36   and then then of course I have Evernote [TS]

00:42:38   and a Wikipedia app and it's like this [TS]

00:42:42   is easily 95 percent at the time I'm [TS]

00:42:45   going to spend on this iPad so I can get [TS]

00:42:47   it all in the doc and I can get it [TS]

00:42:49   arranged reasonably nicely now the thing [TS]

00:42:51   that I'm trying to do to preserve my [TS]

00:42:53   mental muscle memory is because since [TS]

00:42:55   Docs are variable in size there's three [TS]

00:42:59   muscle memory points here center left [TS]

00:43:02   hand side right hand side so this is [TS]

00:43:06   what I want now to be the same across [TS]

00:43:07   all devices so the launching folder is [TS]

00:43:10   in the center the plus to start the [TS]

00:43:12   timer is on the left and the X to stop [TS]

00:43:15   the timer is on the right this is this [TS]

00:43:17   is what's going to be the same across [TS]

00:43:19   all devices and all that means now is I [TS]

00:43:22   need to put a symmetrical number of apps [TS]

00:43:26   in between those points so am I writing [TS]

00:43:29   iPad I have three apps between the left [TS]

00:43:31   and the middle and on the right hand [TS]

00:43:34   side I have two apps plus a folder that [TS]

00:43:39   contains everything else that's on the [TS]

00:43:41   iPad since I've decided that there will [TS]

00:43:44   be no apps on the home screen [TS]

00:43:46   that means everything else goes into the [TS]

00:43:49   infinity folder that holds all of the [TS]

00:43:52   other apps that are going to exist on [TS]

00:43:54   the iPad so this this is this is the [TS]

00:43:57   idea of my doc solution is you have one [TS]

00:44:01   folder that's the Infinity folder I have [TS]

00:44:04   three muscle memory points and then I [TS]

00:44:07   fill in the rest that's that's the idea [TS]

00:44:10   of what's going on can I ask you a [TS]

00:44:11   question about the muscle memory thing [TS]

00:44:13   please why didn't you put all three in [TS]

00:44:15   the middle on everything because on the [TS]

00:44:18   big iPad because you have the recents [TS]

00:44:19   it's not on the far right in iOS 11 you [TS]

00:44:23   have this option of because the dock is [TS]

00:44:26   so important [TS]

00:44:26   iOS will put three suggested apps in [TS]

00:44:30   your dock [TS]

00:44:30   on the right side and these you don't [TS]

00:44:35   have control over they just they just [TS]

00:44:37   appear they're the suggestions they're [TS]

00:44:38   they're what Apple thinks you want to [TS]

00:44:41   have now there's there's like a funny [TS]

00:44:44   bit of space that's between these apps [TS]

00:44:48   and the other apps that makes everything [TS]

00:44:50   kind of off-center and having the three [TS]

00:44:53   right in the middle but not exactly in [TS]

00:44:56   the middle is makes it more obvious that [TS]

00:44:59   things are off-center to me it just [TS]

00:45:02   visually bothered me more okay so you [TS]

00:45:05   tried it yeah okay I tried it but it [TS]

00:45:08   just looked weird and I can in my mind [TS]

00:45:12   sort of mentally place those suggested [TS]

00:45:16   apps in a different location and you'd [TS]

00:45:18   like the suggested apps enough to keep [TS]

00:45:20   it on the big iPad because it's not on [TS]

00:45:22   the well well we're trying with we're [TS]

00:45:26   trying a few things here all right but [TS]

00:45:27   we'll get to this in a second it also [TS]

00:45:30   helped that the the red X I press far [TS]

00:45:32   less than the start button all right so [TS]

00:45:33   it matters less that that one is in the [TS]

00:45:35   exact right spot but for me from my [TS]

00:45:38   brain this just works even though it [TS]

00:45:41   should seem like keeping everything in [TS]

00:45:43   the center would would make more sense [TS]

00:45:45   but I don't for like for me for somehow [TS]

00:45:47   this is just what seems to make more [TS]

00:45:50   sense as put them at the edges even [TS]

00:45:52   though on one of these devices there [TS]

00:45:53   isn't quite an edge so that so this is [TS]

00:45:58   what I am trying but this again like [TS]

00:45:59   this world of inconsistency is [TS]

00:46:01   crazy-making [TS]

00:46:02   because on the iPad that I use for [TS]

00:46:05   everything I do have these suggested [TS]

00:46:07   apps because it's it's really useful to [TS]

00:46:10   have them there but I I don't want them [TS]

00:46:13   on my dedicated sort of writing office [TS]

00:46:16   iPad because they're often just [TS]

00:46:18   suggesting apps to me which are in the [TS]

00:46:21   dock already right are there things that [TS]

00:46:22   I've just used and and there changing is [TS]

00:46:25   annoying like it's it's not helpful [TS]

00:46:26   because on that device I'm able to get [TS]

00:46:28   just about everything that I want in the [TS]

00:46:30   dock in the dock this is this is where I [TS]

00:46:32   am with the setup of things I have a [TS]

00:46:34   couple of observations one I enjoy the [TS]

00:46:38   fact that you have decided that you I'm [TS]

00:46:40   willing to take the colors of some icons [TS]

00:46:42   and [TS]

00:46:43   we created icons of your own books and [TS]

00:46:46   audiobooks [TS]

00:46:47   I'm assuming that they are lot they are [TS]

00:46:49   literally just shortcuts to launch by [TS]

00:46:52   ebooks and audible and you have taken [TS]

00:46:56   matters into your own hands and have [TS]

00:46:58   gone for a more pleasing green to you [TS]

00:47:00   green color than the yellows I have [TS]

00:47:04   taken matters in my own hands there's [TS]

00:47:05   another one that you have missed there [TS]

00:47:06   was no I I hadn't missed that I had [TS]

00:47:09   assumed that that wasn't real but the [TS]

00:47:12   ebooks and audiobooks were more obvious [TS]

00:47:14   to me yeah flashcards is a shortcut to [TS]

00:47:18   the program I've been using for years [TS]

00:47:20   and years which is called Anki which is [TS]

00:47:22   it's great it's it's a fantastic [TS]

00:47:24   flashcard program but it has a very ugly [TS]

00:47:27   app that I don't think has been updated [TS]

00:47:30   in years and years I can tell how long [TS]

00:47:32   you've been using it because you keep [TS]

00:47:34   calling it a program which is very [TS]

00:47:37   that's you know what that's totally yeah [TS]

00:47:39   it is a program because I started using [TS]

00:47:42   it in college on a computer that is the [TS]

00:47:44   program everything else is an app I love [TS]

00:47:47   you know that your brain made that [TS]

00:47:49   distinction this is a this is a computer [TS]

00:47:52   program yeah I would never have used [TS]

00:47:55   that and then because Amazon finally [TS]

00:47:57   introduced proper text alignment in [TS]

00:47:59   their app I don't switch back to using [TS]

00:48:02   Kindles which is great but what but but [TS]

00:48:05   that Kindle app icon is horrific Lee [TS]

00:48:09   ugly do you know I was like I will not [TS]

00:48:12   allow that on my screen like I don't [TS]

00:48:14   want to have to look at that [TS]

00:48:15   I hate that the apps have the words [TS]

00:48:17   beneath the app to begin with and then [TS]

00:48:20   any any app which also has to write its [TS]

00:48:22   own name on the app icon in addition to [TS]

00:48:25   the title underneath as I I can't deal [TS]

00:48:27   with that it's it's horrible it's like [TS]

00:48:28   Kindle like yeah I get it Kindle like I [TS]

00:48:31   see the word twice I hate it so I just [TS]

00:48:34   made a I made a much better icon using [TS]

00:48:36   using workflows and then they use so yes [TS]

00:48:40   that's I have some I have some [TS]

00:48:42   replacements app icons cool for ones [TS]

00:48:44   that are that are unacceptable except [TS]

00:48:46   for the fact that you're running three [TS]

00:48:48   to do apps on your iPhone I think that's [TS]

00:48:53   most of my general questions [TS]

00:48:56   on my phone there just just to be clear [TS]

00:48:58   that that to do row which is four icons [TS]

00:49:02   yeah it's a two-lane just quickly so [TS]

00:49:05   people don't think I'm going crazy it's [TS]

00:49:07   like the do is for reminders that are [TS]

00:49:09   related to a particular time or timers [TS]

00:49:10   that I want to run as we've discussed in [TS]

00:49:12   the past but we don't need to go over [TS]

00:49:15   here again it is useful to split certain [TS]

00:49:18   kinds of tasks between to do and [TS]

00:49:21   OmniFocus so OmniFocus is generally like [TS]

00:49:24   big project stuff and to do is much much [TS]

00:49:27   smaller things and then to do issed is [TS]

00:49:30   what i use to communicate with my [TS]

00:49:33   personal assistant so that is like [TS]

00:49:35   shared tasks between the two of us Oh [TS]

00:49:37   Vonda list is dead oh yes yeah wonder [TS]

00:49:41   list is gone maybe I should call this [TS]

00:49:44   one two diced like I have to give this [TS]

00:49:46   one a new name now because vendor list [TS]

00:49:48   is gone no you don't know we don't need [TS]

00:49:51   to do that to joist is actually a pretty [TS]

00:49:53   funny name I like that but I used to do [TS]

00:49:56   it and loved it so I wouldn't give it a [TS]

00:49:59   different name [TS]

00:50:00   even though vendor list is the way that [TS]

00:50:01   that app should be pronounced anyway [TS]

00:50:04   yeah to do it interesting okay what do [TS]

00:50:08   you think of to do this cuz this one I [TS]

00:50:09   use every day I mean I install its [TS]

00:50:11   virtues I like the automation a bit [TS]

00:50:13   that's pretty good for you if you're [TS]

00:50:14   using it for shared tasks to have things [TS]

00:50:16   automated from it it's probably pretty [TS]

00:50:18   good [TS]

00:50:18   I actually actually don't use any of the [TS]

00:50:21   automation features in it this this is a [TS]

00:50:24   case where basically my assistant now [TS]

00:50:27   we're running up against some [TS]

00:50:28   limitations in wonder list we just ran [TS]

00:50:31   into some things are like this isn't [TS]

00:50:32   this isn't working great anymore [TS]

00:50:34   and primarily one of the things was like [TS]

00:50:36   the need to be able to prioritize [TS]

00:50:37   certain tasks above others she is the [TS]

00:50:39   one who is 95% using this and I am I'm [TS]

00:50:42   simply like adding tasks and adding [TS]

00:50:44   comments so I feel like I can't really [TS]

00:50:47   give a fair review of two DUIs yeah like [TS]

00:50:50   what what I would I do use of it I can [TS]

00:50:53   say like I'm not a huge fan and it feels [TS]

00:50:57   like there's some really obvious things [TS]

00:50:59   that are missing but but I can say that [TS]

00:51:02   it is definitely a better collaboration [TS]

00:51:05   solution when your collaboration gets [TS]

00:51:07   more complicate [TS]

00:51:08   like that that's clearly the case [TS]

00:51:10   goodbye Linda list goodbye it's been a [TS]

00:51:13   it's been a pleasure I feel I feel a [TS]

00:51:15   little exhausted from all the explaining [TS]

00:51:17   I've done of this of this setup that I [TS]

00:51:19   have here Mike and I feel like I've [TS]

00:51:22   barely even scratched the surface it [TS]

00:51:24   might be your time for a nap yeah it [TS]

00:51:26   might be it might be my time for a nap [TS]

00:53:06   check it out today I want to thank blue [TS]

00:53:08   apron for their support of this show [TS]

00:53:09   blue apron a better way to cook what do [TS]

00:53:13   you use the two different eye pads for [TS]

00:53:17   like what are those what are the use [TS]

00:53:18   cases for you of your two devices right [TS]

00:53:20   now [TS]

00:53:21   so primarily like the primary use cases [TS]

00:53:24   are home and out of home so I used the [TS]

00:53:30   twelve point nine and away from home I [TS]

00:53:31   used a ten point five but I do use the [TS]

00:53:35   ten point five a lot at home [TS]

00:53:36   if I'm going to be doing things like [TS]

00:53:40   reading Twitter and stuff like that [TS]

00:53:43   I may just grab the ten point five [TS]

00:53:44   because it's just easier to hold in use [TS]

00:53:46   because it's smaller and lighter but [TS]

00:53:49   like the primary is home and away which [TS]

00:53:52   is why I take steps to set them up very [TS]

00:53:55   similarly they're not exactly the same [TS]

00:53:59   select some of the folders and the [TS]

00:54:01   placement some apps on the home screen [TS]

00:54:02   is different but that's not a thing that [TS]

00:54:04   I worry about too much because if it's [TS]

00:54:08   not in the dock I'm opening it via [TS]

00:54:10   spotlight right and so like for me I I [TS]

00:54:15   am the reason I still have apps on my [TS]

00:54:17   home screen is because they're really [TS]

00:54:19   just a organization thing it's just like [TS]

00:54:21   a place for me to put the apps because I [TS]

00:54:23   open them the majority of apps from from [TS]

00:54:25   spotlight all right okay so that makes [TS]

00:54:28   sense since you are doing the same kind [TS]

00:54:30   of things on both devices it's it's a [TS]

00:54:33   simple it's simply the size factor and [TS]

00:54:36   convenience factor of moving it or not [TS]

00:54:38   moving it exactly that makes it so [TS]

00:54:40   that's why you want the dock the same [TS]

00:54:41   everywhere because otherwise you would [TS]

00:54:43   be losing your mind and my steps are [TS]

00:54:44   like so I have less I there are you can [TS]

00:54:50   have more apps in the dock on the 12.9 [TS]

00:54:53   but I actually less because I like the [TS]

00:54:55   consistency I have noticed an [TS]

00:54:57   inconsistency which I want to rectify [TS]

00:54:59   that Dropbox on the large iPad is in the [TS]

00:55:02   dock on its own but on the the small [TS]

00:55:05   iPad it's in a folder although I expect [TS]

00:55:07   as soon as Dropbox update for the files [TS]

00:55:09   app on iOS 11 I won't need it anymore [TS]

00:55:12   really yeah I'm kind of just waiting for [TS]

00:55:15   that point so the dock for me is really [TS]

00:55:19   like these are the apps that I'm using [TS]

00:55:20   most on my iPad and I think it [TS]

00:55:23   reinforces the fact that I say I use the [TS]

00:55:25   iPad for work because they are work apps [TS]

00:55:28   like all of those that's what they are [TS]

00:55:31   and the reason that they are all there [TS]

00:55:33   is because these are the application [TS]

00:55:35   that I'm most frequently using in split [TS]

00:55:38   views so I keep them in the dock because [TS]

00:55:40   it's way easier that way to just flick [TS]

00:55:42   up and just drag it to where I need it [TS]

00:55:43   to be which just all the record because [TS]

00:55:46   there is a lot of a there's a lot of [TS]

00:55:48   inconsistent opinions about how people [TS]

00:55:51   feel about this [TS]

00:55:51   I love the new multitasking in iOS 11 I [TS]

00:55:55   think it's fantastic I think it is [TS]

00:55:57   superior in almost every way it just [TS]

00:56:00   takes time to get used to and learn but [TS]

00:56:02   I absolutely love it I love all the [TS]

00:56:05   dragging because I am able to visualize [TS]

00:56:08   where everything's going to be is is [TS]

00:56:09   very visual I think that that is a there [TS]

00:56:12   I think there is a key to being able to [TS]

00:56:14   work on iOS in the if you like things [TS]

00:56:17   visual I think that is the thing you [TS]

00:56:19   have to just get used to is that you'd [TS]

00:56:21   like to be able to see things you like [TS]

00:56:23   to be able to see the movement of things [TS]

00:56:25   and being able to physically drag [TS]

00:56:28   application to where I want them to be [TS]

00:56:30   and have them snap into a place and move [TS]

00:56:32   them all around and the additional [TS]

00:56:35   flexibility that iOS Elevens [TS]

00:56:36   multitasking has is amazing and I love [TS]

00:56:39   it and I've changed some of my workflows [TS]

00:56:41   and they're changed now and I would [TS]

00:56:42   never want to change them back yeah I do [TS]

00:56:47   again just want to make it really clear [TS]

00:56:48   that I am also like in favor of the [TS]

00:56:51   changes and I think it's I think it's a [TS]

00:56:53   really great the way that they have done [TS]

00:56:55   it I've just been advocating for [TS]

00:56:56   something on top of that very minor [TS]

00:56:58   thing on top of that but yeah yeah of [TS]

00:57:00   course I mean that there are things that [TS]

00:57:01   I would like to defer that for it to do [TS]

00:57:04   that are different now um but on the [TS]

00:57:06   whole I am a real proponent of the [TS]

00:57:09   changes that Apple has made yeah so a [TS]

00:57:12   thing that I have found really [TS]

00:57:13   interesting about using iOS over this [TS]

00:57:17   long period of time is with my two iPads [TS]

00:57:22   one that has this dedicated purpose [TS]

00:57:24   which is writing and research and the [TS]

00:57:27   other one which is the everything iPad [TS]

00:57:30   all kinds of administrative work I see [TS]

00:57:34   both sides of how this works [TS]

00:57:36   so on my dedicated iPad I feel like this [TS]

00:57:40   is exactly what Apple is really [TS]

00:57:42   optimizing for I can put essentially all [TS]

00:57:45   of the applications that I want [TS]

00:57:47   use on the dock and on my writing iPad [TS]

00:57:51   every app does have a consistent buddy [TS]

00:57:54   that it stays with Ulysses in bear [TS]

00:57:57   I'm always opening together ones the [TS]

00:57:59   main writing app and and the other one [TS]

00:58:01   is for auxiliary notes workflow and do [TS]

00:58:05   are side by side they're always together [TS]

00:58:07   like to do an OmniFocus stay together as [TS]

00:58:11   a little pair so on this device [TS]

00:58:14   I have consistent pairs which is great [TS]

00:58:17   it's nice to see the things that I want [TS]

00:58:19   next to each other next to each other [TS]

00:58:20   all the time and I also have the vast [TS]

00:58:24   majority of my work is just there on the [TS]

00:58:25   dock and easily accessible it's like [TS]

00:58:27   this is great I feel like this is [TS]

00:58:29   exactly what this was this was designed [TS]

00:58:30   for but I do still feel like on my [TS]

00:58:34   everything iPad like I'm just I'm losing [TS]

00:58:37   my mind and it's it I still find it very [TS]

00:58:39   clunky and frustrating to work with [TS]

00:58:42   because there I just I just don't have [TS]

00:58:45   consistent pairs of apps and I find [TS]

00:58:51   myself always wishing it was it was a [TS]

00:58:53   bit more like spaces on on Mac OS where [TS]

00:58:55   I could say like I want to define these [TS]

00:58:59   two APS's together and don't don't break [TS]

00:59:02   them apart if I happen to go to [TS]

00:59:05   something else briefly like it's I feel [TS]

00:59:09   like like like I'm building castles out [TS]

00:59:11   of sand like for like for example this [TS]

00:59:13   morning they're doing like storyboarding [TS]

00:59:14   feedback with the animator and so like [TS]

00:59:16   that is a process that has a bunch of [TS]

00:59:19   apps that I want to use and it's like [TS]

00:59:21   it's just I just keep finding a clunky [TS]

00:59:23   to be constantly like setting up pairs [TS]

00:59:25   but then I want to break them down [TS]

00:59:27   because I want to bring in a third app [TS]

00:59:29   but I want to go back to the previous [TS]

00:59:31   thing I'm still finding it frustrating [TS]

00:59:34   for like intensive use of a large number [TS]

00:59:38   of varied apps but I got on the smaller [TS]

00:59:42   case it's it's great and perfect but [TS]

00:59:45   it's it's more frustrating that the [TS]

00:59:47   larger number of apps you use I think [TS]

00:59:49   the fundamental problem of people that [TS]

00:59:52   feel the way that you do is thinking of [TS]

00:59:54   apps as pairs I don't think that Apple [TS]

00:59:57   ever really [TS]

00:59:57   ever really [TS]

01:00:00   you to do that you decided to think of [TS]

01:00:02   it that way on your own right but what I [TS]

01:00:04   mean about the the pairs though is it's [TS]

01:00:08   not the thinking of them as pairs [TS]

01:00:10   it's the switching like here's the use [TS]

01:00:15   cases like I have one major app so it's [TS]

01:00:18   like what I was doing this morning is [TS]

01:00:19   the perfect case so I am watching a [TS]

01:00:22   movie that's a storyboard so this is [TS]

01:00:24   like the main thing that I want to look [TS]

01:00:26   at and then on the side I want to be [TS]

01:00:29   able to switch between three different [TS]

01:00:30   things like I want to have notes that [TS]

01:00:33   I'm taking in bear I need to be able to [TS]

01:00:36   talk to the animator in slack and [TS]

01:00:38   there's a couple of other things where I [TS]

01:00:40   need like I need to bring up good notes [TS]

01:00:41   to be able to make a quick sketch to [TS]

01:00:43   make something that's clear and then [TS]

01:00:45   Dropbox to send a link back to the [TS]

01:00:47   animator who I'm talking in slack but I [TS]

01:00:49   never want to close the the movie that [TS]

01:00:52   I'm watching which is the thing that is [TS]

01:00:54   being comments I like that workflow [TS]

01:00:55   which is still very easy to do on a [TS]

01:00:58   computer is is frustrating because of [TS]

01:01:01   the the time it takes to switch the app [TS]

01:01:04   on the side and it's also frustrating [TS]

01:01:07   because of the inconsistent steps of how [TS]

01:01:11   do I summon these apps like what where [TS]

01:01:14   is this app that I'm trying to summer [TS]

01:01:15   and like let me get it from spotlight [TS]

01:01:17   when I get it from spotlight I have to [TS]

01:01:18   drag it over into just the right spot I [TS]

01:01:20   have to wait for the little animation to [TS]

01:01:22   show me that it's going to go there like [TS]

01:01:23   rapid switching between a few things is [TS]

01:01:26   is noticeably slower than rapid [TS]

01:01:30   switching between a few things was under [TS]

01:01:32   the old system and I want to be really [TS]

01:01:33   clear I'm not asking for that old system [TS]

01:01:36   that's in iOS 10 you could use the [TS]

01:01:39   command tab action to switch out just [TS]

01:01:42   what was in the left pane I understand [TS]

01:01:44   that I do miss that but I don't want it [TS]

01:01:47   back there's other weird consistency [TS]

01:01:50   problems that I sort of thought were [TS]

01:01:52   bugs at first in iOS but I think are not [TS]

01:01:54   bugs which is when you do the command [TS]

01:01:58   tab switcher what apps show up in that [TS]

01:02:01   list doesn't show everything and I don't [TS]

01:02:03   understand what it's supposed to be [TS]

01:02:05   showing that is something that I think [TS]

01:02:06   is wrong however Apple are deciding to [TS]

01:02:09   make that list is is wrong because it [TS]

01:02:12   should [TS]

01:02:13   everything and it should show pairs but [TS]

01:02:16   it doesn't yeah and it should show [TS]

01:02:18   things that I've just touched so it [TS]

01:02:22   feels like this the thing that it seems [TS]

01:02:24   to miss the most is I've summon an app [TS]

01:02:26   from spotlight and dragged it into an [TS]

01:02:29   overview setting or like an OP main view [TS]

01:02:32   and like then it doesn't show up in the [TS]

01:02:34   command switcher it's like I want that [TS]

01:02:36   thing I was just there like that also [TS]

01:02:38   adds to this frustration of trying to [TS]

01:02:40   switch between multiple apps like it's [TS]

01:02:42   so so like I guess this is this is one [TS]

01:02:46   of the things that also just doesn't [TS]

01:02:48   help but like what is my doc setup going [TS]

01:02:49   to be and how am I going to set these [TS]

01:02:51   iPads is the use case where I want to [TS]

01:02:54   have the most number of things I feel [TS]

01:02:57   like I really need to cram the doc full [TS]

01:03:01   of stuff and and this is where you can [TS]

01:03:03   you can see on my everything iPad [TS]

01:03:06   screenshot like I have I have the [TS]

01:03:08   Infinity folder I have the launcher [TS]

01:03:10   folder but I'm also trying to make a [TS]

01:03:11   little communications folder which is [TS]

01:03:13   like here here are the little apps that [TS]

01:03:15   I'm I'm where I'm talking to people and [TS]

01:03:17   I find myself switching in and out of [TS]

01:03:19   very frequently and trying to put them [TS]

01:03:22   in a folder on the dock so I can get [TS]

01:03:24   access to them more quickly for dropping [TS]

01:03:27   into the workspace that I'm that I'm [TS]

01:03:29   using like I'm trying to get around this [TS]

01:03:31   but I don't I don't have a great [TS]

01:03:33   solution that feels like wow I'm really [TS]

01:03:36   flying through my work on this iPad it [TS]

01:03:39   still feels really clunky for me to do [TS]

01:03:42   that so I can see in the specific use [TS]

01:03:46   case that you've posted and that you [TS]

01:03:47   want to use three apps plus for video [TS]

01:03:50   right and I'm assuming picturing picture [TS]

01:03:53   isn't working for you here for whatever [TS]

01:03:55   reason that might be it's not really [TS]

01:03:57   worth getting as - yeah the details [TS]

01:03:59   don't matter but picture in pictures is [TS]

01:04:01   either the view isn't large enough for [TS]

01:04:02   the app that use and does support it [TS]

01:04:04   whatever I can see for that where it's [TS]

01:04:06   frustrating right but because you're [TS]

01:04:09   watching a video I think for basically [TS]

01:04:11   any other work flow issue you can just [TS]

01:04:14   deal with switching into a different app [TS]

01:04:15   for a moment right like if you need four [TS]

01:04:17   apps well just using three of them [TS]

01:04:20   because you can use three if you slide [TS]

01:04:21   over and then you just come on tap out [TS]

01:04:23   to the other app enter what we need to [TS]

01:04:25   go in there [TS]

01:04:25   go back the specific use case that [TS]

01:04:27   you're posing is tricky because you want [TS]

01:04:29   to be watching the video at all times [TS]

01:04:32   but you know just I would just say like [TS]

01:04:34   it's frustrating but pulls the video [TS]

01:04:35   right like that that's that's the [TS]

01:04:37   workflow you will end up getting [TS]

01:04:38   yourself into erican just like well I'll [TS]

01:04:40   pause for a moment and do what I need to [TS]

01:04:41   do and go back I get that there have [TS]

01:04:46   been some workflows I have had to change [TS]

01:04:48   as well but I take this small [TS]

01:04:52   frustration because the system as a [TS]

01:04:55   whole [TS]

01:04:56   is vastly superior to what has come [TS]

01:04:59   before it and I really think that a lot [TS]

01:05:01   of people are getting more frustrated [TS]

01:05:03   about this just because of how close it [TS]

01:05:05   is to the Mac now which I actually think [TS]

01:05:08   is a testament to how good i OS 11 is [TS]

01:05:11   that people are getting more frustrated [TS]

01:05:14   about how it's different in the Mac [TS]

01:05:15   because it is so good and it's so [TS]

01:05:18   powerful it's almost like an uncanny [TS]

01:05:21   valley thing where people are less [TS]

01:05:23   comparing it to what iOS 10 was and [TS]

01:05:26   comparing it to what they think it [TS]

01:05:28   should be because of how the Mac works [TS]

01:05:30   so yeah like I I will agree with that [TS]

01:05:33   100% because there was no doubt in my [TS]

01:05:36   mind that it's a bit of a frustration [TS]

01:05:37   for me because like I don't know about [TS]

01:05:41   you but on the Mac I am a very heavy [TS]

01:05:43   spaces user I really like the ability to [TS]

01:05:46   use lots of spaces I think most heavy [TS]

01:05:48   iOS users use the Mac that way hmm maybe [TS]

01:05:52   and so yes it does invite that [TS]

01:05:55   comparison of on the Mac it's much [TS]

01:05:58   easier to be fussy about my spaces and [TS]

01:06:00   which apps go in what spaces and then it [TS]

01:06:03   feels like I'm switching between a whole [TS]

01:06:05   bunch of different virtual desktops that [TS]

01:06:09   have been left just the way I want them [TS]

01:06:10   to be and so like I will I will [TS]

01:06:12   completely agree with you on that that [TS]

01:06:14   that is it is impressive in a way that [TS]

01:06:17   the comparison is now oh why can't I why [TS]

01:06:19   can't I do this as lightning fast as I [TS]

01:06:21   can do it on a full desktop computer you [TS]

01:06:23   and I have always acknowledged that [TS]

01:06:25   there are there are many things on the [TS]

01:06:26   iPad that we have always known it is it [TS]

01:06:28   is slower to do but it doesn't change [TS]

01:06:30   the fact that we like working on an iPad [TS]

01:06:33   way better like and that has always been [TS]

01:06:35   a that has always been a trade-off that [TS]

01:06:37   where where [TS]

01:06:38   to make yeah like I know that dragging [TS]

01:06:40   from the dock is slower than however any [TS]

01:06:43   other system would use it even the [TS]

01:06:45   previous system I don't care cuz I enjoy [TS]

01:06:47   it more [TS]

01:06:48   I like the multitasking because of [TS]

01:06:50   multitasking with my hands like I like [TS]

01:06:52   it I like the feeling of it but III [TS]

01:06:55   understand I understand the concerns but [TS]

01:06:58   like I think this is the best we could [TS]

01:06:59   have got because any more than this [TS]

01:07:01   would have been way too complicated I [TS]

01:07:04   could jump bigger than the jump that [TS]

01:07:06   Apple have made here would have been too [TS]

01:07:08   much especially when at this stage that [TS]

01:07:11   we're at right now and we'll still be [TS]

01:07:14   out for a few weeks as Apple updates [TS]

01:07:15   come out [TS]

01:07:16   we haven't even realized the full [TS]

01:07:17   potential of what this system is because [TS]

01:07:20   we don't really have the opportunity to [TS]

01:07:22   use drag and drop very heavily because [TS]

01:07:24   the app support isn't there yet because [TS]

01:07:26   they're not out yet so I think that like [TS]

01:07:30   there are still things that we've yet to [TS]

01:07:32   fully appreciate for what this system is [TS]

01:07:35   doing so I think any more than what [TS]

01:07:39   Apple is added in 11 would have been way [TS]

01:07:42   too complicated like the idea of having [TS]

01:07:44   persistent pairs and having apps that [TS]

01:07:47   can be open with other pairs in multiple [TS]

01:07:50   instances inside of the multitasking [TS]

01:07:52   pane I think that kind of thing might [TS]

01:07:54   come in the future but if they would [TS]

01:07:56   have put that in now it would have been [TS]

01:07:58   like a nightmare scenario to try and [TS]

01:08:00   understand what was going on I will I [TS]

01:08:02   will completely agree with that my [TS]

01:08:04   frustration is is simply the the thing [TS]

01:08:06   that I was trying to remedy with the [TS]

01:08:08   keyboard shortcut is like I'm very used [TS]

01:08:11   to just switching stuff fast with the [TS]

01:08:13   keyboard yeah and my main frustration is [TS]

01:08:15   is like I will happily learn complicated [TS]

01:08:18   keyboard commands if it if it lets me [TS]

01:08:20   move between a bunch of but it's like [TS]

01:08:21   there's just no way to do that under the [TS]

01:08:24   currents it's like it's like come on [TS]

01:08:25   shift alt tab could change to left app I [TS]

01:08:30   think I had some great suggestions for [TS]

01:08:31   app shortcuts but whatever is is I think [TS]

01:08:36   that that's one of the things that also [TS]

01:08:37   just it feels like it slows it slows it [TS]

01:08:40   down but again I keep thinking of the [TS]

01:08:43   eye like I mentioned last time like for [TS]

01:08:45   for my aunt who uses an iPad pro was her [TS]

01:08:48   main computer this is a hell of an [TS]

01:08:51   upgrade [TS]

01:08:51   and she is not a very technical user but [TS]

01:08:55   I think the system is brilliantly [TS]

01:08:56   designed because I know it will take her [TS]

01:08:59   no time at all to figure out what to do [TS]

01:09:00   do you just move it with your hands like [TS]

01:09:02   it's a physical object or ignore it [TS]

01:09:04   completely right you can ignore it [TS]

01:09:06   completely if you don't notice it and [TS]

01:09:08   it's fine yeah or yeah it doesn't even [TS]

01:09:10   matter [TS]

01:09:10   that's why I like its it is a great [TS]

01:09:13   solution to a very difficult thing I [TS]

01:09:15   just I just wish for pro users there was [TS]

01:09:18   like a faster way to do more precise [TS]

01:09:20   stuff you got some beautiful wallpapers [TS]

01:09:22   on your iOS devices here Mike thank you [TS]

01:09:26   two of them are recreations of in 5k of [TS]

01:09:31   old Apple Mac desktops which I'll put a [TS]

01:09:34   link in the show notes [TS]

01:09:36   stephen hackett and amazing designer [TS]

01:09:38   frank put those together together the [TS]

01:09:41   one on my iphone is actually a real afm [TS]

01:09:45   members exclusive wallpaper so if you're [TS]

01:09:47   really if a member you get loads of cool [TS]

01:09:50   wallpapers we're just doing another plug [TS]

01:09:51   here everybody and you yeah you get [TS]

01:09:54   lovely wallpapers and that's one for [TS]

01:09:56   remaster which is the video game show [TS]

01:09:58   than i do you have that same black one [TS]

01:10:01   on your phone that you've had forever [TS]

01:10:03   that the fractal one although it's it's [TS]

01:10:05   better than whatever that out of time [TS]

01:10:07   homescreen was that weird [TS]

01:10:10   dusty thing and i'm assuming i assumed [TS]

01:10:17   that the other two are both apples ones [TS]

01:10:19   right i think that that that's beech one [TS]

01:10:22   is - i know the beach ones not apples [TS]

01:10:26   one the the pink splash is an apple one [TS]

01:10:29   I feel like in in in beta season I'm [TS]

01:10:33   more daring with wood wallpapers I'm [TS]

01:10:35   like use on now yeah so this is this is [TS]

01:10:40   great gone wild with his wallpaper [TS]

01:10:42   backgrounds I think after betas season [TS]

01:10:45   is over what we want we might calm down [TS]

01:10:47   a little bit and go to something [TS]

01:10:48   something more more button-down and [TS]

01:10:51   businesslike but where is the beach one [TS]

01:10:54   from I don't know actually where that [TS]

01:10:56   that Beach one is is from I can't [TS]

01:10:59   remember where I got that original tub [TS]

01:11:00   nobody wants it because if you don't [TS]

01:11:03   know where is from I can't give people [TS]

01:11:04   the links [TS]

01:11:05   this is why we're mentioning the [TS]

01:11:06   wallpapers because people always want [TS]

01:11:08   them this is what reverse image searches [TS]

01:11:10   for yep that's how people found the [TS]

01:11:13   original one that you couldn't find oh [TS]

01:11:15   actually I should I should make a plug [TS]

01:11:20   yes I don't think I've mentioned I don't [TS]

01:11:22   think I've mentioned it on the show [TS]

01:11:23   before but the iPhone wallpaper it's [TS]

01:11:27   done by this designer who's made a whole [TS]

01:11:29   series of black wallpapers and they are [TS]

01:11:32   fantastic and great looking and so it's [TS]

01:11:37   it's similar to the old one that I used [TS]

01:11:38   to have it's just less it's less [TS]

01:11:40   contrasting it's more subtle and I will [TS]

01:11:44   I'll put this link in the show notes for [TS]

01:13:32   Mike I'm exhausted oh I'm sorry I really [TS]

01:13:38   am because I feel like when we talk [TS]

01:13:40   about this I have to mentally go through [TS]

01:13:42   all of my thoughts for the past many [TS]

01:13:44   weeks about decisions we've barely [TS]

01:13:48   touched that touch this in in the depth [TS]

01:13:50   that I feel is adequate but I cannot go [TS]

01:13:53   on any further we've had we had topics [TS]

01:13:56   planned for the show which have all been [TS]

01:13:58   destroyed by home screen discussion [TS]

01:14:01   which always eats everything everything [TS]

01:14:04   and so what I really want to know about [TS]

01:14:08   right now as we're ending the show is [TS]

01:14:12   tell me more about your laundry I have a [TS]

01:14:16   lot to say believe it or not about my [TS]

01:14:18   laundry because I'm back home now and it [TS]

01:14:20   was halfway through my trip so I needed [TS]

01:14:23   to do more laundry before I got home the [TS]

01:14:26   continuing adventure of Mike's laundry [TS]

01:14:28   yeah I did laundry two more times [TS]

01:14:30   in fact okay so when we last checked in [TS]

01:14:35   with your laundry you you had asked for [TS]

01:14:39   advice for people about what you were [TS]

01:14:41   gonna do yeah so what happened what [TS]

01:14:44   happened in America with with your [TS]

01:14:45   laundry [TS]

01:14:46   so remember last time I had done [TS]

01:14:50   expensive hotel laundry and I had done [TS]

01:14:52   one load of laundry at my co-founders [TS]

01:14:54   house using a machine I didn't [TS]

01:14:56   understand and that me and you were [TS]

01:14:59   talking about the idea and how great it [TS]

01:15:01   will be to use one of those apps you [TS]

01:15:03   know like the laundry app so they come [TS]

01:15:04   pick up the laundry for you I have some [TS]

01:15:07   bad news gray all of the apps that I [TS]

01:15:10   tried required a u.s. telephone number [TS]

01:15:12   for sign up okay [TS]

01:15:15   and I couldn't trick them what do you [TS]

01:15:17   mean by trick them like entering a [TS]

01:15:19   random number or entering a number that [TS]

01:15:21   was my number but in some weird US [TS]

01:15:23   format because they all want to send you [TS]

01:15:26   a text message to confirm the phone [TS]

01:15:27   number to confirm sign up [TS]

01:15:29   yeah this is this is what Skype phone [TS]

01:15:31   numbers are for no I didn't think of [TS]

01:15:35   that did you know you know what's really [TS]

01:15:37   annoying is I actually set up a Skype [TS]

01:15:39   telephone them but two days ago because [TS]

01:15:41   I needed it for a conference call and I [TS]

01:15:44   didn't put two and two together can [TS]

01:15:47   Skype numbers receive text messages I am [TS]

01:15:50   fairly sure they can okay and if they [TS]

01:15:54   can't I know a lot of these services do [TS]

01:15:56   a fallback where they call and give you [TS]

01:15:58   the pin mm-hmm yeah look at that I know [TS]

01:16:01   I know for a fact I have verified stuff [TS]

01:16:04   that demands a u.s. phone number with my [TS]

01:16:07   skype u.s. phone number like I know I [TS]

01:16:09   have done this okay you're making me [TS]

01:16:11   slightly doubt myself about the text [TS]

01:16:13   message but I know I have used it to [TS]

01:16:15   verify these fucking is the Col fallback [TS]

01:16:17   so this is this is a CGP grey brand life [TS]

01:16:20   hack for everybody out there on this ice [TS]

01:16:23   is good because this they're not cheap [TS]

01:16:25   those Skype numbers but I do have one [TS]

01:16:27   now because every now and then someone [TS]

01:16:29   needs to call me I need to talk to [TS]

01:16:31   someone on the phone and it's just like [TS]

01:16:33   oh can we use Skype and it's like it's [TS]

01:16:35   just like a whole big deal but now I [TS]

01:16:37   have a phone number that people can call [TS]

01:16:38   and we've I think it was about iOS 10 it [TS]

01:16:41   if I'm signed in on skype it just rings [TS]

01:16:43   as if it's so yeah that's good I have [TS]

01:16:46   that set up now I didn't think of that [TS]

01:16:47   at the time so there there you go you [TS]

01:16:49   even need that well you can't do it so [TS]

01:16:52   when I was in Brooklyn which by the way [TS]

01:16:54   I love Brooklyn obviously loves Brooklyn [TS]

01:16:58   wow what a surprise surprise surprise [TS]

01:17:01   dear I you would like Portland to Mike I [TS]

01:17:04   like Portland I like Brooklyn I also [TS]

01:17:06   stayed in East like the Lower East Side [TS]

01:17:08   like the East Village love that too [TS]

01:17:09   obviously yeah well good all good stuff [TS]

01:17:12   for Mike lots of my key things in those [TS]

01:17:15   places and I took my clothes to a [TS]

01:17:18   laundromat cert like a laundromat that [TS]

01:17:20   had a wash and fold service I I wasn't a [TS]

01:17:23   hundred percent sure what that meant but [TS]

01:17:25   I assumed what it meant was they would [TS]

01:17:27   wash and fold my clothes that's what it [TS]

01:17:29   sounds like it's what it sounds like [TS]

01:17:30   right saw was like I figured that this [TS]

01:17:32   is what I'm looking for right but I'd [TS]

01:17:34   never used one of these services before [TS]

01:17:36   so I just took my I basically took my [TS]

01:17:39   clothes in a bag into this place making [TS]

01:17:42   an assumption [TS]

01:17:43   what would occur and I put it down and [TS]

01:17:45   said could you can you take care of [TS]

01:17:47   these and they said yes and they gave me [TS]

01:17:48   a piece of paper and that was it I was [TS]

01:17:51   like all right well we'll see what [TS]

01:17:52   happens that cost me $9 that that load [TS]

01:17:56   of clothes and it was great and I was [TS]

01:17:58   very happy and it came back basically [TS]

01:18:00   exactly the same as the hotel stuff just [TS]

01:18:02   not with a blue ribbon so you don't feel [TS]

01:18:06   the need to bleep that number my $9 no [TS]

01:18:08   I'm fine with $9 - can I let that go [TS]

01:18:11   through uh-huh there was an unexpected [TS]

01:18:13   side effect of the last episode for me [TS]

01:18:16   yeah something I didn't anticipate was [TS]

01:18:18   the amount of direct messages I was [TS]

01:18:21   gonna get from friends asking me just [TS]

01:18:23   one simple question can you guess what [TS]

01:18:26   that question was how much did you pay [TS]

01:18:28   for your laundry yes pretty much [TS]

01:18:31   everybody that I know everybody wanted [TS]

01:18:33   to know everyone wanted to know and as I [TS]

01:18:38   assumed would happen all the listeners [TS]

01:18:42   wanted to know - yeah that's what you [TS]

01:18:45   get for bleeping yep I mean I knew it [TS]

01:18:46   would happen I was fine with it but then [TS]

01:18:49   something really interesting happened in [TS]

01:18:50   the reddit thread someone with the [TS]

01:18:52   username funk you put together a Google [TS]

01:18:58   Form to employ the wisdom of the crowd [TS]

01:19:00   which I found out was like this is this [TS]

01:19:04   method of trying to guess something by [TS]

01:19:07   using multiple people's guesses and you [TS]

01:19:09   take the averages of the guesses and it [TS]

01:19:11   gives you something which is expected to [TS]

01:19:13   be correct now this person put together [TS]

01:19:18   this survey they weeded out some of the [TS]

01:19:20   more wild answers which was probably the [TS]

01:19:25   right thing to do and came up with an [TS]

01:19:27   answer of one hundred and fifty three [TS]

01:19:30   dollars and 21 cents over one hundred [TS]

01:19:33   and eighty three responses mm-hmm they [TS]

01:19:36   then closed it down after that point [TS]

01:19:38   just because they felt that they had a [TS]

01:19:40   good sense of the answer from that point [TS]

01:19:43   now because this number was so close to [TS]

01:19:47   the actual number I felt that it was [TS]

01:19:51   only fair for me to confirm it [TS]

01:19:56   so the actual number that I paid for my [TS]

01:19:58   laundry dear listeners was 116 dollars [TS]

01:20:02   as pretty good for a wisdom of the crowd [TS]

01:20:06   estimation and I didn't want to share [TS]

01:20:08   the number at the time or cold because I [TS]

01:20:10   still believe if I would have said 116 [TS]

01:20:12   dollars I would have been inundated by [TS]

01:20:14   people saying how ridiculous that is [TS]

01:20:16   this bond on laundry it is ridiculous it [TS]

01:20:19   is ridiculous but also all of my friends [TS]

01:20:21   that asked me how much did you spend I [TS]

01:20:23   said to them my first answer for [TS]

01:20:26   everyone was how much did you think and [TS]

01:20:28   everyone went higher so I still believe [TS]

01:20:31   that by not giving that number everyone [TS]

01:20:33   thought it was worse then it actually [TS]

01:20:35   ended up being because I still think a [TS]

01:20:37   hundred and sixteen dollars is an [TS]

01:20:38   embarrassing amount to spend on the [TS]

01:20:39   lottery especially when I got the same [TS]

01:20:41   amount down for nine dollars but I feel [TS]

01:20:43   better about my 116 dollars on the M [TS]

01:20:46   because most people thought it was a [TS]

01:20:48   thousand which was wild to me people [TS]

01:20:50   kept thinking I spent a thousand dollars [TS]

01:20:52   I would say keep the clothes right like [TS]

01:20:55   you can have them I don't want anymore [TS]

01:20:58   take them a thousand dollars no that's [TS]

01:21:01   that's ludicrous I'm I spend 116 was the [TS]

01:21:05   amount so you feel like you've done [TS]

01:21:06   successful expectation management here I [TS]

01:21:09   do actually [TS]

01:21:10   I feel like III I feel like I manage [TS]

01:21:14   this best for my own personal well-being [TS]

01:21:19   116 dollars was the amount [TS]

01:21:21   congratulations to everybody for getting [TS]

01:21:23   so close with 153 so I assumed that [TS]

01:21:27   there was just a lot of people that have [TS]

01:21:28   probably been through this themselves I [TS]

01:21:30   also did hear from a lot of people that [TS]

01:21:32   have been through this themselves who [TS]

01:21:33   had a guess of the amount because they [TS]

01:21:35   know how much this stuff costs so I [TS]

01:21:38   think this can close out the laundry now [TS]

01:21:40   because I'm back at home and I'm doing [TS]

01:21:42   my laundry at home of a machine that I [TS]

01:21:44   understand and it's effectively free [TS]

01:21:47   because I our water is paid for by our [TS]

01:21:50   building so I don't need to pay the [TS]

01:21:53   water bill I guess it's just the [TS]

01:21:56   electric that powell's the Washington [TS]

01:21:58   anyway I expect it's less than nine [TS]

01:22:01   dollars a property what do you want [TS]

01:22:02   you're walking you're walking us into a [TS]

01:22:04   kilowatt-hour cost conversion [TS]

01:22:07   calculation [TS]

01:22:08   that we're all good I'm cool with what [TS]

01:22:11   it's costing me at home um but there we [TS]

01:22:14   go so that's the laundry I'm glad you're [TS]

01:22:16   back to your front loaded washer it's [TS]

01:22:19   just so much more easy to understand [TS]

01:22:21   I used a novel one of those top loading [TS]

01:22:24   washers with some with some more friends [TS]

01:22:26   because we went for a vacation with [TS]

01:22:28   friends and I still don't understand it [TS]

01:22:31   I just don't get it it doesn't make [TS]

01:22:33   sense to me [TS]

01:22:33   it's like this big wheel and it has like [TS]

01:22:35   a million options on it I just I don't I [TS]

01:22:39   think we're just gonna have to put this [TS]

01:22:40   aside as cultural differences much it is [TS]

01:22:42   100 percent I'm not saying it's wrong [TS]

01:22:44   I'm just saying I don't understand it [TS]

01:22:46   you know in the same way that I would [TS]

01:22:48   imagine people that are used to the [TS]

01:22:49   top-loading machines have to take some [TS]

01:22:51   time to understand the front loading [TS]

01:22:53   machines cuz they're different they're [TS]

01:22:54   not that different I want it just before [TS]

01:22:57   we before we finish today great I want [TS]

01:22:58   to thank everybody who signed up to [TS]

01:23:00   become a real AFM member we mentioned it [TS]

01:23:26   a sense of the audio from last temples [TS]

01:23:31   still sign up and still get access to it [TS]

01:23:32   if you want to and you can sign up at [TS]

01:23:50   bonuses that have come out so please [TS]

01:23:53   feel free and thank you if you have [TS]

01:23:54   signed up I just want to say thank you [TS]

01:23:56   to everybody who signed up as well we [TS]

01:23:59   really appreciate it and I also I also [TS]

01:24:02   want to specifically say a real thanks [TS]

01:24:05   to you Mike and to Jason Snell for all [TS]

01:24:09   of the work that YouTube put into that [TS]

01:24:11   episode I feel like this is a thing [TS]

01:24:14   where I get to just show up and like I [TS]

01:24:21   I have a lot of fun doing those episodes [TS]

01:24:23   but I I just I always feel the need to [TS]

01:24:26   reinforce eyes like I like I am so aware [TS]

01:24:30   that those those member episodes work [TS]

01:24:33   because Jason does just such a fantastic [TS]

01:24:36   job of being the computer being the [TS]

01:24:39   parser like that is that is a a much [TS]

01:24:42   more imaginative role than it may seem [TS]

01:24:44   to the listener like the things that he [TS]

01:24:46   has to keep track of and all of the work [TS]

01:24:48   he has to do live while we are recording [TS]

01:24:50   so I really appreciate that and to you [TS]
