Top Four 37: Valentine's Chocolate Boxes

00:00:00   hi everybody welcome to a new episode of

00:00:02   top 4 this is our special Valentine's

00:00:03   Day love episode anyway so um I thought

00:00:14   we should go back to eating things

00:00:17   because why not I mean we we are pretty

00:00:20   good at it I mean yeah we are all right

00:00:22   and nothing says Valentine's Day more

00:00:25   than cheesy heart-shaped boxes of

00:00:28   chocolates so my idea originally was to

00:00:34   go pick up one of the you know Russell

00:00:36   Stover is whatever brand you know the

00:00:38   big heart-shaped box and we sampled the

00:00:41   different flavors and rank the flavors

00:00:43   that are inside the box well when we

00:00:45   went to the grocery store today we saw

00:00:48   that there were many types of boxes and

00:00:50   Marco thought you know what

00:00:52   we should buy all of them of course so

00:00:55   yeah as usual we have in our head to to

00:00:59   rank some kind of food thing we arrive

00:01:01   we arrive at the food location and

00:01:03   realize there are way too many choices

00:01:04   and rather than cut back the ambition of

00:01:07   what we were doing we just bought all of

00:01:08   them you know and we're working through

00:01:10   these you know individual chocolates

00:01:12   themselves you know that everyone's

00:01:15   preferences vary and everything I think

00:01:17   it will be more productive instead of

00:01:18   trying to rank the individual flavors of

00:01:20   the chocolates to rank of the boxes

00:01:22   themselves like which brand box of

00:01:25   chocolates should you get is it the

00:01:26   Russell Stover's is it the Dove is it

00:01:28   the other one like you know that we have

00:01:29   all these all these different brands and

00:01:30   different tiers within the brands like

00:01:32   Russell Stover's makes like nine

00:01:33   different options yeah but I'm pretty

00:01:35   sure inside it's all the same but

00:01:37   basically if you haven't seen these

00:01:38   heart-shaped boxes it's pretty much the

00:01:40   heart-shaped box that a you know

00:01:42   thirteen year old would give to the

00:01:45   lover of their choice in school so yeah

00:01:50   have you ever actually gotten one of

00:01:51   these as a gift do men receive them

00:01:54   usually I not I don't know I've never

00:01:56   far as I know I've never gotten one as a

00:01:58   gift I've given one or two I think to

00:02:00   like high school girlfriends because

00:02:02   they're super cheesy like okay so we got

00:02:04   two different ruffle Russell Stover's

00:02:06   boxes one is um wrapped in this red

00:02:10   cellophane it's the same like like if

00:02:12   you buy a Christmas cactus

00:02:14   like the the pot is wrapped in that yeah

00:02:16   yeah yeah yeah like a poinsettia yeah

00:02:19   yeah and then we also got the Russell

00:02:21   Stover's elegant collection and that's

00:02:23   in kind of a red velvet box there was

00:02:26   also the same collection you could have

00:02:28   the lace black lace variety so I guess

00:02:30   depending on what you want to say and

00:02:32   was that one that came with the American

00:02:35   flag and military camo oh no that was

00:02:38   another Russell Stover his one yes there

00:02:39   was an American flag and camouflage were

00:02:42   a military like the digital America yeah

00:02:46   so you know if your lover is into that

00:02:51   then that's the box you get we also have

00:02:54   a dove which is in kind of a nice tin in

00:02:57   it's an unconventional heart shape it's

00:02:59   kind of like a sushi heart like a it's

00:03:01   like if you it's like the italics

00:03:03   version of a heart it's like if you blew

00:03:04   a bubble of the heart or if the heart

00:03:06   was melting slightly yeah or a melted

00:03:08   heart okay melting or italics or a

00:03:10   bubble heart then we also have a much

00:03:11   more any kind of pink and red striped

00:03:15   standard heart box with a gold bow and

00:03:17   that's by Hershey's it's called pot of

00:03:19   gold and then the piece de resistance

00:03:22   which looks like an old lady's sofa

00:03:25   living room cushion more than the

00:03:27   Russell Stover premium velvet one yeah

00:03:30   because this has like the satin bow with

00:03:31   the with the roses that are all curled

00:03:34   up the ribbon roses on the front and

00:03:35   it's all padded so it's really funny

00:03:37   it's the white man sampler that's

00:03:42   pronounced I believe so I think it's

00:03:45   missing an e oh yes I'm sorry the

00:03:48   Whitman's Wow all right so cheesy it's

00:03:57   the one yeah I mean I got to say like

00:04:00   there Russell Stover velvet one though I

00:04:01   mean that's that's really something like

00:04:03   I was like I was like heading it in this

00:04:05   store like we should get this I reached

00:04:08   over to get it that's why we got it so

00:04:10   you could pet it this is kind of a night

00:04:11   spot it feels really good yeah I think

00:04:14   collection if I was to receive one of

00:04:16   these I would probably want to receive

00:04:17   that one from their Private Reserve of

00:04:20   chocolates actually has it says a

00:04:22   decadent nineteen piece Private Reserve

00:04:25   chocolate assortment now

00:04:27   what is that what does Private Reserve

00:04:28   really mean for Russell Stover's Brando

00:04:31   maybe they used a little bit extra cocoa

00:04:33   in some of them because all right

00:04:34   everybody make their Private Reserve

00:04:36   until they ship out of the factory I

00:04:38   don't know what's the regular Wednesday

00:04:41   he doesn't say Private Reserve

00:04:42   it just says fine chocolates handcrafted

00:04:45   in small batches but they both were

00:04:47   there both handcrafted in small batches

00:04:49   I especially love that there's so much

00:04:51   small batches there's so much of this

00:04:53   chocolate there's no way this is a small

00:04:54   badge yeah I think maybe small is a

00:04:57   relative term relative to the entire

00:05:00   output of the Hershey's corporation like

00:05:02   maybe I don't know that our Russell

00:05:03   Stover is part of Hershey's I don't know

00:05:05   just guessing but yeah cuz they have a

00:05:06   different box this one's made in America

00:05:08   that's why it had the American flag oh

00:05:09   one of the problems with the Russell

00:05:11   Stover is that the one with the red

00:05:13   poinsettia wrapping around it is that

00:05:15   you can't see the labeling on the back

00:05:18   so you can't see like ingredient lists

00:05:21   or like anything about it yeah there's

00:05:23   nothing the red film around it is so

00:05:26   tall just has a big sticker that says

00:05:28   assorted well that's okay isn't alright

00:05:31   I'm gonna open this up alright so we're

00:05:32   starting out with the Russell Stover's

00:05:35   yeah this is like oh the box is even

00:05:39   better okay so after you remove the

00:05:42   layer of fresh red red colored trash

00:05:47   then you kind of have like a shiny what

00:05:52   would you call this it's like a no like

00:05:55   glossy cardboard right yeah yeah like

00:05:57   kind of metallic looking board with an

00:05:59   embossed rose on it so there we go oh

00:06:02   wow

00:06:04   okay I gotta say it looks really nice

00:06:06   when you open it up like the

00:06:07   presentation of all those chocolates is

00:06:08   really nice as Mel's good it smells like

00:06:10   a valentine's job it does it smells like

00:06:11   found hoods do we have any kind of key

00:06:13   oh we do oh thank god

00:06:15   okay they have some sort of key here so

00:06:17   we have all kinds of different things

00:06:18   like peanut butter crunch maple nut

00:06:20   maple

00:06:21   okay there's lots of maple nut butter

00:06:22   coconut cream orange cream yeah it just

00:06:25   kind of repeats so we can shout out to

00:06:27   any chocolate maker that gives you a map

00:06:29   or a key of what's what so you don't

00:06:31   have to use guess based on how they look

00:06:32   that is a huge wonderful feature

00:06:35   advancement that as far as I know when

00:06:37   we were younger didn't seem to be done

00:06:39   really and now

00:06:40   seems a lot more common and anybody who

00:06:42   does that gets extra points in my book

00:06:43   because as somebody who occasionally

00:06:46   likes to eat such things I always like

00:06:48   to know what I'm getting beforehand cuz

00:06:50   like I'm you know I'm an adult I'm not

00:06:52   gonna have a million chocolates unless

00:06:54   I'm doing a podcast about eating

00:06:55   chocolates and you know in other cases

00:06:57   like I only want to have like one or two

00:06:58   and so I want those to be really good

00:07:00   flavors that I actually really enjoy if

00:07:03   I'm only gonna have one or two I don't

00:07:04   want one of them to be like coconut or

00:07:06   one of those like big gross cherry

00:07:08   liquid bomb hey now I love both of those

00:07:10   things okay

00:07:11   things differently but we're not ranking

00:07:13   the chocolates we're putting these boxes

00:07:15   against each other yes okay so let me

00:07:18   can I see the map or the flavor key

00:07:19   whatever it is what's Roman nougat I

00:07:21   don't know I know what nougat is I know

00:07:24   what Rome is I don't know what Roman

00:07:27   nougat is anyway I'm gonna go for the

00:07:28   maple nut butter alright first

00:07:30   appearance it is defective oh wait

00:07:33   there's maple nut butter and there's

00:07:34   also maple in a cream which one do you

00:07:36   want

00:07:36   Oh creme maple nut cream is the one in

00:07:38   the very center right about 12 o'clock

00:07:39   they look the same

00:07:41   the maple nut butter one is defective

00:07:42   and oozing out well that's pretty big

00:07:45   strike again for us to like what does it

00:07:46   say about your relationship or your

00:07:48   intense with somebody if you give them a

00:07:50   box of defective Valentine's chocolates

00:07:52   I mean it's not really your fault

00:07:54   it's it's not your fault if it's

00:07:56   defective but I guess is it then you

00:07:57   sprung for like the cheap one no fault

00:07:59   but it is your problem

00:08:00   is your problem Russell Stover did had

00:08:03   the biggest box available that's true

00:08:05   yeah we didn't get the app we got the

00:08:07   second biggest box we got the one that

00:08:08   was like fifteen dollars instead of 20

00:08:10   all right the maple one doesn't taste

00:08:12   very good alright I will try I love

00:08:17   peanut butter but I don't know how

00:08:19   common that's going to be maybe I'll try

00:08:20   out the vanilla cream that's that's nice

00:08:22   and basic yeah I'd try that this is

00:08:27   impressively mediocre like it's just

00:08:31   like cheap basic after eating one of

00:08:35   these I would never in a million years

00:08:37   think I would like another one of those

00:08:39   okay I've gone I've gone ahead I have

00:08:42   taken bites have a lot of these

00:08:43   chocolates already haha just kind of

00:08:45   plowed through I'm gonna go for a peanut

00:08:47   butter crunch because in general the

00:08:49   fillings don't seem to matter much I

00:08:51   mean it changes the taste slightly but

00:08:52   it's not extremely great chocolate

00:08:54   but I'm curious I think we should put

00:08:58   this directly against their private

00:08:59   reserve I agree yeah this yeah the the

00:09:01   regular Russell Stover I give it a

00:09:03   thumbs down really it's really like just

00:09:07   like cheap bland yeah it's very romantic

00:09:13   to open no I could I could take off the

00:09:16   velvet box also has a key it's covered

00:09:22   in chocolate for freshness okay the

00:09:23   little um the chocolate paper guard this

00:09:27   one is dark brown with gold writing Yeti

00:09:30   so the the interior like plastic like

00:09:32   kind of rack that holds them all in is

00:09:34   shinier and that there are there are

00:09:37   fewer larger chocolate pieces in this

00:09:39   one and they are much more fancily

00:09:42   finished with different like colors and

00:09:44   like icing squiggles on the outside and

00:09:45   so yeah it's definitely it's visually a

00:09:48   noticeable step up I would say generally

00:09:50   you know assuming that these turns to be

00:09:52   better if you're giving a gift for

00:09:55   somebody like this I think a a smaller

00:09:57   box of better chocolates it's probably a

00:10:00   better option

00:10:00   oh absolutely big box of the cheap ones

00:10:03   alright let's see if we have any common

00:10:05   flavors oh no we have like Oh some of

00:10:08   the I don't I don't even know these

00:10:10   words I think they were French they're

00:10:12   in French to be fancy oh really

00:10:14   I don't know do we get like the wrong

00:10:18   sheet the wrong key does a key count for

00:10:22   bonus points if you can't okay

00:10:23   so there I think they gave them all like

00:10:25   weird names so that they sound fancier

00:10:26   okay so the signature almond cream

00:10:29   all right that's that's Collazo

00:10:31   raspberry cordial the monogram almond

00:10:34   mousse comp Anjali

00:10:37   that's all you I know when I speak

00:10:40   French I don't even know what that

00:10:41   saying alright which one is the Sigma

00:10:43   cream creston refined hazelnut praline

00:10:46   ooh I do like the Monaco raspberry

00:10:48   caramel look at these names I want to

00:10:50   try the the almond one signature almond

00:10:56   cream right there in the middle did you

00:10:57   seriously get yourself water and not me

00:11:00   you one way street in the water oh I

00:11:03   think I might as well make carried in

00:11:04   the water this is our romantic episode

00:11:08   and you don't even get me water let me

00:11:09   try this than I'll get Susan this is the

00:11:11   signature almond cream from the Russell

00:11:13   Stover elegant collection Private

00:11:15   Reserve

00:11:15   there's curdled what happened in here

00:11:18   yes it isn't a smooth cream it's it's

00:11:20   very like grainy

00:11:21   I wouldn't say kernel I just say badly

00:11:23   made the chocolate is a little bit

00:11:25   better it's better than the base Russell

00:11:28   Stover thank for sure okay this one's a

00:11:30   grainy - this is the mocha cream let's

00:11:33   see say that word say the word above

00:11:35   mocha cream I think it's Amalfi I'm

00:11:38   trying the hazelnut praline which is in

00:11:40   the shape of a giant hazelnut kind of

00:11:42   nice okay so the flavors are a lot more

00:11:45   nuanced than the standard Russell Stover

00:11:49   chocolates a little bit better so that

00:11:51   is legit

00:11:53   but in general it's still not really

00:11:56   really great chocolate I've had much

00:11:58   better chocolate yeah I really enjoy the

00:12:01   flavors in this one but the like they're

00:12:04   very they're pretty heavy-handed on the

00:12:06   flavors like they kind of hit you over

00:12:07   the head like the hazelnut one tastes a

00:12:10   lot like artificial hazelnut flavoring

00:12:12   and not a lot like actual like good

00:12:13   refined hazelnut flavor

00:12:16   these are definitely better than the

00:12:18   base Russell Stover and I would way

00:12:19   rather have this box then than the basic

00:12:22   roasted over box for sure but yeah I'm

00:12:24   not sure this earns its Private Reserve

00:12:26   designation and velvet box

00:12:28   I think the velvety box cover is nicer

00:12:31   than I just tried the coconut cream it

00:12:34   was really good on the chart which one

00:12:36   is that oh I'd really like some of that

00:12:37   water looks really good you're drinking

00:12:39   it over there how about you get someone

00:13:56   website ID to save more of those

00:13:59   chocolates where's this coconut cream

00:14:01   one and it from the Private Reserve one

00:14:02   further and there's a lemon - I ate half

00:14:05   of it this is labelled the Kon lemon

00:14:07   souffle all right I'm gonna preemptively

00:14:10   say I think this box might be the best

00:14:12   out of all the boxes I don't have high

00:14:15   hopes for the others the lemon and

00:14:17   coconut that I just tried they're both

00:14:19   good they're not great they're good I

00:14:23   they're both again very very like heavy

00:14:26   hand like hit you in the face flavors

00:14:28   like the lemon cream was very very

00:14:29   strong and very very sweet the coconut

00:14:32   was like really like intense and the

00:14:33   flavoring so if you like very intense

00:14:35   like fillings and creams this is a

00:14:38   decent pick so far this at least feels

00:14:41   like you're eating something special ish

00:14:43   yeah yeah like the basic four also

00:14:45   Stauber box it just tastes like gift

00:14:48   basket chocolate that's been like

00:14:50   sitting in a gift basket warehouse for

00:14:52   six years and it looks like gift basket

00:14:54   chocolate there's nothing it's all just

00:14:56   so monotone I mean they have a dark and

00:14:58   a light chocolate and the original

00:15:00   Russell Stover's ones but it's not

00:15:02   anything special the shapes are kind of

00:15:04   like mmm yeah kind of like poured a

00:15:07   little sloppily the Private Reserve ones

00:15:09   appear to have come out of a mold or

00:15:13   they've been dipped in a special way so

00:15:15   they're a little bit smoother yeah they

00:15:17   still seem mass manufactured there's

00:15:19   some white chocolate involved in them so

00:15:21   that's nice yeah

00:15:22   yeah like they're there it is a

00:15:24   noticeable step up and I think it was

00:15:26   like five dollars more it was not a big

00:15:27   price difference so I would say no

00:15:29   question go for those even the plastic

00:15:30   that's in between them is a little nicer

00:15:32   exactly all right what's our next box

00:15:35   we have the Hershey's pot of gold but

00:15:38   it's not a pot it's shaped like a heart

00:15:40   box it's a heart of gold why do why

00:15:42   wouldn't they say heart of gold missed

00:15:44   opportunity totally missed opportunities

00:15:46   wrong with them

00:15:47   I think they're just trying to double up

00:15:50   on their marketing for st. Patty's Day

00:15:52   and Valentine's Day big ears like didn't

00:15:55   want to change the template when they

00:15:56   yeah they got the labels printed they

00:15:58   just put the card on here let's change

00:16:00   the color okay now this one has the key

00:16:02   printed on the underside of the box it

00:16:04   doesn't have a special little paper like

00:16:05   the Russell Stover's did well I see I

00:16:08   respect that move because then you can't

00:16:09   lose the key oh that is a good point you

00:16:11   know it's like if you still have the box

00:16:13   which you almost certainly will cuz

00:16:14   that's how these are eaten then you have

00:16:16   the key yes that's nice after taking off

00:16:18   the layer of garbage yes I mean that

00:16:21   really the first rows disturber with

00:16:22   with the point set of wrapping that was

00:16:24   like clearly wrapping garber you throw

00:16:25   these are just like you know excusable

00:16:27   amounts of plastic wrap okay so these

00:16:29   are a lot fancier these are definitely

00:16:31   poured molded chocolates they have some

00:16:34   striations of different colors they have

00:16:38   colors of the chocolate they have some

00:16:40   swirl patterns that are nice that

00:16:42   definitely look like they came out of a

00:16:43   mold they're much prettier and the

00:16:45   plastic around them although thin is

00:16:48   also styled nicely the only thing that I

00:16:52   would that I would call them out for is

00:16:54   that they are very monochromatic

00:16:55   compared to the private the private

00:16:56   reserved ones there's enough use of

00:16:58   white chocolate here and there but

00:16:59   either as like a zigzag icing or as the

00:17:02   base layer for some of them that you get

00:17:03   a nice like you know mostly brown with

00:17:05   like spots of white and stripes look

00:17:08   from the Private Reserve whereas this

00:17:09   one it's just all brown so it's like I

00:17:12   could use a little a little bit more

00:17:13   visual variety on this one although I

00:17:15   suppose Hershey's is known for their

00:17:17   brown chocolates because it can't be

00:17:19   that's a price but still a little bit of

00:17:21   white chocolate even like some white

00:17:22   chocolate drizzle just makes the

00:17:23   chocolate look a little bit more special

00:17:25   this is Valentine's Day after all yeah

00:17:26   all right so let's see the key what what

00:17:29   kind of flavors do we have like kind of

00:17:30   like a fancy name for usual stuff for

00:17:32   dark chocolate truffle almond cream milk

00:17:35   chocolate truffle let me see the almond

00:17:37   cream where's Carmen oh there's a pecan

00:17:39   caramel cluster so like a turtle I guess

00:17:41   but yeah there's not a lot of variety in

00:17:43   here it repeats a lot

00:17:44   the Russell Stover has more variety in

00:17:46   both the Private Reserve and

00:17:49   regular box but this her she's one does

00:17:52   not have tons of variety going for the

00:17:54   caramel and almonds option Hershey's

00:17:56   chocolate tastes like nothing to me

00:17:57   it always does the caramel and almonds

00:18:00   option literally looks like a Snickers

00:18:01   bar is the vanilla caramel just tastes

00:18:06   like caramel here I tried the almond

00:18:08   creamy but it didn't maybe that's better

00:18:09   yeah the chocolate the Hershey's

00:18:11   chocolate is just like it's just like

00:18:13   hard crunchy nothing like there's no

00:18:15   there's no depth of flavor there's no

00:18:17   flavor to it whatsoever it's literally

00:18:19   like eating I don't even know it's just

00:18:21   it's holding together the filling

00:18:23   there's nothing going on outside it

00:18:24   doesn't add to it at all

00:18:26   well that tastes like nothing yeah the

00:18:28   almond cream is all is similarly like

00:18:30   you don't say the cream tastes like

00:18:31   nothing it's very it's very like hard it

00:18:33   almost looks like styrofoam when you

00:18:34   bite into it like there's no flowing of

00:18:35   the cream it's like it just like a very

00:18:37   like dry dense like you know you bite

00:18:41   through it and it you get a perfect

00:18:43   slice right there yeah I rather have the

00:18:46   over flavored almond cream

00:18:47   yeah and that whatever that was I feel a

00:18:51   the Hershey's she's like I feel like I'm

00:18:53   not eating much of anything yeah doesn't

00:18:55   feel like a thumbs down for the hers it

00:18:56   doesn't feel worth it yeah it's I would

00:18:58   say the Hershey's it might I would we'll

00:19:00   see we'll see how he into breaking them

00:19:01   I think I might rank it slightly above

00:19:02   the base line Russell Stover's but it's

00:19:05   certainly in the ballpark of the same

00:19:07   thing and so much of it is caramels like

00:19:09   it's just caramels over and over yeah

00:19:10   thumbs down this is supposed to be their

00:19:12   variety box no you know they're their

00:19:15   box with their box was pretty on the

00:19:16   outside much more modern and the visuals

00:19:20   of the chocolate are better than the

00:19:22   original Russell Stover's but man they

00:19:24   fail on taste agreed alright next I'm

00:19:26   gonna open up the dev this is like a

00:19:30   hard hard tin situation remove the layer

00:19:34   of garbage and bow now this one also

00:19:36   doesn't advertise much variety ah

00:19:38   oh man the ribbons not even all the way

00:19:41   around it's like fake glued to the cover

00:19:46   that's hilarious day they couldn't maybe

00:19:47   the rest of the ribbon that goes around

00:19:48   the back of the lid Wow

00:19:52   alright this essentially has creamy

00:19:54   caramel caramels dark chocolate peanut

00:19:58   butter truffle hearts and dark chocolate

00:20:00   truffle hearts that's it

00:20:03   it's only those like so at least of

00:20:05   those four flavors in the tag it's only

00:20:06   those though yeah but it says assorted

00:20:08   chocolate so it only has three varieties

00:20:10   of a sordidness yeah there's the tin

00:20:14   situation I guess you could reuse that

00:20:16   if you're a weirdo I think the the

00:20:19   minimum number of distinct flavors for

00:20:22   it to qualify as assorted should

00:20:24   probably be something like six or eight

00:20:25   yeah I don't think for qualified so we

00:20:28   got stuff branding all over it it is

00:20:30   nice that the tag has a two from on the

00:20:32   other side so you can make this really

00:20:35   gift tastic very minimal effort should

00:20:38   when you are sieving one of these should

00:20:42   should you need to label it or should it

00:20:44   be obvious to the recipient who its

00:20:46   affirming isn't it kind of a problem if

00:20:47   they don't if they can't remember or

00:20:48   don't know there appears to be no guide

00:20:50   as to what these are is it just like the

00:20:53   tag that has the guide oh yeah actually

00:20:55   it is the tag that has the guide the

00:20:57   plastic that they're all sitting in is

00:20:59   clear so that's kind of nice and then

00:21:01   you win

00:21:01   this is a little cheesy you lift up the

00:21:04   chocolate and underneath there's a nice

00:21:05   little saying laughs often dove live

00:21:09   passionately dove just seemed create

00:21:13   passion dove we all love the small

00:21:16   things dove a look a smile a touch it's

00:21:22   just the same company as the soap or is

00:21:23   that a different dog I don't know be

00:21:24   mine dove that seems kind of weird for a

00:21:26   company being it to be known for soap

00:21:28   and chocolate here's a fail this heart

00:21:31   isn't in its little pocket in the right

00:21:32   direction share a secret now let me try

00:21:35   the milk chocolate peanut butter truffle

00:21:37   which is the light colored heart all

00:21:39   right I'm trying to tidy up here a

00:21:40   little bit and the Russell Stover box

00:21:41   already broke so the Dove one to me the

00:21:44   fillings are a little bit boring but the

00:21:47   chocolate is significantly better than

00:21:49   the other ones that we've had so far the

00:21:51   peanut butter doesn't taste very good

00:21:52   it's fine it's not it's not amazing the

00:21:54   the the caramel was better it is

00:21:57   unfortunate that there are literally

00:21:58   only three only three varieties here I

00:22:00   would like more than that

00:22:02   but the chocolate itself I would say is

00:22:04   very nice I think very is a very strong

00:22:09   word

00:22:09   I wouldn't say that relatively nice okay

00:22:15   it's the nicest chocolate itself that

00:22:17   we've had so far I don't know I think I

00:22:19   like the Private Reserve better but I

00:22:22   think maybe ice because the feelings are

00:22:23   more interesting yeah the dove just does

00:22:26   not you might as well just get a bag of

00:22:28   chocolates

00:22:29   yeah the dove one like the chocolate is

00:22:31   great but for the purposes of a

00:22:33   Valentine's box of chocolates unless you

00:22:36   know that the person only likes these

00:22:39   three very basic flavors I love

00:22:42   chocolate yeah and then you need to

00:22:45   teach those people that they need to

00:22:47   like better chocolate and get them

00:22:48   something good from like a chocolate

00:22:50   place yeah these are good but they're

00:22:54   not particularly memorable the chocolate

00:22:55   is very nice the fillings are just

00:22:57   really boring yeah and again and I

00:23:00   really want more variety than three

00:23:02   flavors out of a box like this this is

00:23:05   um oh this this franking is going to be

00:23:09   like I think maybe one clear winner and

00:23:12   the rest just I I'm forming some some

00:23:15   rankings in my head alright is that it

00:23:16   or is there one more there is one more

00:23:17   that's what the white man chocolate yeah

00:23:19   right mm-hmm all right let's see let's

00:23:20   see that one when you put away this

00:23:23   heart tin put on this pile of other art

00:23:27   tins and box

00:23:28   I'm keeping the Private Reserve near me

00:23:30   this funny that's the only one that's

00:23:32   been really great there's not even great

00:23:34   just like less correct I think if you

00:23:36   were to purchase a heart-shaped box of

00:23:39   chocolate for your lover on Valentine's

00:23:42   I think that so far that's gonna be my

00:23:45   choice oh yeah it's so it's my it's

00:23:47   definitely my number one and it comes in

00:23:49   the black lace variety which is very

00:23:50   nice that was a little weird but the

00:23:53   soft velvet box you know you can like

00:23:55   use that as a pillow afterwards oh this

00:23:56   one is like alright so it's the white

00:24:01   man sampler I can't quite get the cover

00:24:05   off oh it's taped on there's like a few

00:24:07   spots of taper on the this is basically

00:24:09   grandma chocolate and grandmas are great

00:24:13   maybe they like this chocolate they

00:24:14   could always use some tape yep

00:24:17   even the box is kind of like this red

00:24:20   crisps like dated fifties Christmas

00:24:23   color yeah it's definitely it's a very

00:24:26   dated look for sure yeah basically

00:24:29   like it's a made of dress remnants from

00:24:31   the 1950s all right very similar okay

00:24:36   the white man key and the Russell Stover

00:24:39   key is basically identical let me see

00:24:41   that do you think maybe it's the same

00:24:42   company and is just like a different

00:24:43   like brand of him

00:24:44   we'll have to inspect it's it does look

00:24:46   identically printed really similar yeah

00:24:49   well this is suspicious because it looks

00:24:51   very simple it's just like it alright so

00:24:53   let's see so what other white man

00:24:55   chocolate with flavors that we have here

00:24:56   whoa okay opening this up it has gold

00:25:00   plastic around it not really much color

00:25:04   variety but still better than the

00:25:06   Russell Stover's and they have very

00:25:09   different types of chocolates in here

00:25:11   you have some like chocolate-covered

00:25:12   almonds and chocolate-covered it looks

00:25:15   like they might be raisins they have

00:25:18   there's a fruit and nut caramel there's

00:25:20   a there's cherry cordial there's one in

00:25:22   the middle called milk chocolate

00:25:23   messenger boy which is a little scary

00:25:24   yep there's a boy on it yeah chocolate

00:25:29   buttercream is that a post made it sound

00:25:31   like the original post made me I think

00:25:34   it supposed to meet but maybe it's also

00:25:36   Whitman all right you mean it's not it's

00:25:41   not the white it's not wearing it post

00:25:43   mate so close all right there's a lot to

00:25:47   choose from here I think I might try the

00:25:49   let's see maybe among lasses choo a

00:25:51   peanut butter cream well I got to try

00:25:55   almond cream to be consistent it passed

00:25:56   me the Russell Stover

00:25:57   because they have some sort of like cup

00:25:59   cluster thing in here - yeah I'm gonna

00:26:02   compare those oh my gosh oh very hard

00:26:08   the Russell Stover ones very hard yeah

00:26:11   alright let's not open this box anymore

00:26:14   you know they passed me them the Whitman

00:26:16   as you say this ruffles the whore box

00:26:20   every time I open it's falling apart

00:26:21   even more it's structural integrity is

00:26:24   just shot the women's are very chewy

00:26:27   like there's a lot a lot of like thick

00:26:30   sticky fillings I tried like three or

00:26:32   four of them so far oh my god I bit into

00:26:34   the cherry cordial and there is just

00:26:38   kind of this neon your hands are red and

00:26:41   dripping pink lick

00:26:43   you tripped on your pants oh gosh I mean

00:26:45   it's everywhere you should go on the

00:26:49   floor oh god no I don't want the dog to

00:26:51   get it why is this so pink it's it it

00:26:56   looks like I spilled ink on my hands

00:26:57   it really does yeah why is it this color

00:26:59   it's a scary amount of dye oh can you

00:27:01   get my headphones off all right so while

00:27:13   two free covers from that yeah the the

00:27:16   so far the Whitman's is the flavors some

00:27:21   of the flavors are actually pretty good

00:27:23   but each one of them has some kind of

00:27:26   weird execution like the filling is too

00:27:29   stiff and sticky or like the almond

00:27:31   cream had a really good almond flavor

00:27:32   but there was also like a raw dry almond

00:27:35   in there you'd like get through this dry

00:27:37   almond and it'll otherwise good cream

00:27:39   the little peanuts were equally dry yeah

00:27:41   everything's very dry and chewy but okay

00:27:43   I think that this box was actually made

00:27:46   in 1950 mm-hmm but all right so my

00:27:52   theory is that this box appeals to older

00:27:56   people of a certain generation where

00:27:59   don't have dentures because if they did

00:28:01   they would rip right out but so with the

00:28:05   decor on the box and the gold gaudy

00:28:10   decor inside and the dryness and the the

00:28:16   types of flavors and the little post-boy

00:28:18   on there it's really making me think

00:28:21   that this is a I don't know either

00:28:25   extremely dated and and the white man

00:28:28   company does not understand modern times

00:28:30   or it's just made to appeal to people of

00:28:35   a certain age that would find this good

00:28:39   people who have mistreated as white man

00:28:41   I think that's a feature on a bug

00:28:42   yeah I'm thinking this is very I don't

00:28:47   know because it's it's definitely not

00:28:48   quirky nostalgic it's just a little bit

00:28:52   sad nostalgic is definitely the

00:28:54   chocolate that you would have bought a

00:28:55   million

00:28:56   years ago and it would have been great

00:28:58   because it would have been the only ones

00:28:59   that you had but now we have others so

00:29:02   I'm thinking not with this one yeah I I

00:29:06   do like the flavorings of it better than

00:29:10   the cheap Russell servers oh I don't

00:29:12   know because have you did you retry the

00:29:16   cheaper stores like after trading rooms

00:29:17   try it again it's it's surprisingly

00:29:19   crappy mmm well let me see the chart for

00:29:22   the Russell Stover cuz I feel like at

00:29:25   least their flavors are a little bit

00:29:26   better like maple nut cream butter cream

00:29:30   caramel where's the Whitman chocolates

00:29:33   you just have like oh wait maple nut

00:29:35   cream butter cream really the the

00:29:41   Russell Stover standard one every flavor

00:29:44   I've tried has been disappointing in

00:29:46   pretty big ways the Whitman some of

00:29:49   those actually tasted a lot better they

00:29:53   the Whitman ones are worse better are

00:29:57   they Russell Stover just tastes like

00:29:58   garbage plastic and sugar like it's just

00:30:01   there's no refinement there like there's

00:30:03   nothing really you know smooth or

00:30:05   decadent or advanced about them at all

00:30:07   whereas the the Whitman one there's at

00:30:09   least like somewhat like every one of

00:30:11   those bites like oh this is kind of nice

00:30:12   oh except for that dry part but like

00:30:14   before before the dry part it was pretty

00:30:16   nice

00:30:16   like I so I think my ranking I think I'm

00:30:19   pretty good on my ranking I think I'm

00:30:21   ready

00:30:21   um wait can you open up the Hershey's

00:30:22   again it's kind of got a pic which least

00:30:25   bad I do enjoy the care that was put

00:30:29   into creating those chocolates the

00:30:31   Hershey's ones yeah compared to the

00:30:33   regular Russell Stover box

00:30:34   alright well my number one easily is the

00:30:37   Russell Stover Private Reserve the

00:30:39   limited limited batch limited edition

00:30:40   what was the official name of it and

00:30:41   under that it's a private reserve the

00:30:44   Russell Stover is in the velvet box that

00:30:47   was definitely the best out of this

00:30:49   showing although I got to say it like if

00:30:52   you have anywhere near you like a nice

00:30:54   like fancy cause a fancy chocolate shop

00:30:57   yeah like a chocolatier oh yeah like if

00:31:00   you have some point that near you

00:31:01   chances are whatever you get from them

00:31:02   would probably be more expensive but

00:31:05   would also be a lot better even than

00:31:06   this Private Reserve one that said the

00:31:08   private ruler won for I think it was 15

00:31:10   books that's that's pretty good for that

00:31:12   and we did just go down to our local

00:31:14   grocery store two days before

00:31:15   Valentine's Day and we got to pick up

00:31:17   everything was in stock so we just kind

00:31:20   of picked up a box of everything um so

00:31:22   it is all available so that's a benefit

00:31:24   yeah yeah it's easy to get you know it's

00:31:27   gonna be available everywhere so yeah

00:31:29   Russell Stover Velda box

00:31:30   Private Limited Edition reserve whatever

00:31:32   it is that's the best for me yeah me

00:31:33   it's my number one as well

00:31:35   my number two I think would be the dove

00:31:39   because even though I wanted more

00:31:41   variety out of it and the and the

00:31:43   fillings were boring the chocolate was

00:31:45   pretty nice my number three is gonna be

00:31:49   the white man Whitman whatever it is

00:31:51   because again that the flavors were good

00:31:55   even the executions was pretty bad on

00:31:57   those and then my number four is going

00:31:59   to be the her she's nowhere on my list

00:32:03   is gonna be the Russell Stover basic box

00:32:05   that I never want to eat those again but

00:32:07   the Hershey's one is you know just

00:32:09   crappy chocolate but decent fillings but

00:32:12   mostly they just seem like candy bars

00:32:14   but ultimately a if if the show was not

00:32:17   called top four I wouldn't have even had

00:32:20   a number four not that it stopped me a

00:32:21   lot in the past but like like I dislike

00:32:24   the Hershey's almost as much as I

00:32:26   dislike the the basic Russell Stover if

00:32:28   I was going with the typical top four

00:32:30   rules

00:32:31   I would only pick the Russell Stouffer's

00:32:33   Private Reserve to put on my list at all

00:32:35   anywhere because M everything else is

00:32:39   just there's so much wrong with so many

00:32:42   the other ones that it's really hard but

00:32:45   guess if I had to rank them I would put

00:32:49   Hershey's second hmm I would put the

00:32:52   Dove third because they're just so

00:32:54   boring

00:32:54   and oh it's just such a toss-up between

00:32:57   what's bad between them Russell Stover

00:32:59   regular and the Whitman's the Whitman's

00:33:03   just feel I don't know they're just too

00:33:07   chewy nuts like I don't like a lot of

00:33:11   nuts in my chocolate

00:33:12   there's too much nut happening it's a

00:33:14   fair criticism of them I'd say in the

00:33:16   Whitman chocolate so I will put the

00:33:18   Russell Stover regular as my fourth

00:33:21   choice just because they're more cream

00:33:23   heavy

00:33:23   and that's the chocolate I prefer but

00:33:26   the creams like have you tried it but

00:33:27   they're so ugly did you throw the

00:33:28   strawberry cream it's awful yeah no I

00:33:31   it's my fourth it doesn't there was only

00:33:35   five boxes and yeah this this Whitman

00:33:40   sampler man this is this is special

00:33:44   listen to a hat well we'll try to get

00:33:47   this episode out fast enough so that you

00:33:48   all can go out there and buy the Russell

00:33:50   Simmons what is it just go out buy the

00:33:55   Russell Simmons private velvet box yep

00:34:00   avoid the white man and yeah but if you

00:34:04   have a neighborhood chocolatier go to

00:34:05   them and sticks it's gonna be way better

00:34:06   than one yeah you see is a shop local

00:34:08   yeah and happy Valentine's Day I'm not

00:34:12   feeling very romantic right now no let's

00:34:14   let's go have something better like ice

00:34:16   cream or better chocolate no no more

00:34:17   sweets but ice cream who are you here

00:34:20   husband coffee yeah that sounds nice

00:34:23   let's go for a cuddle
