The Incomparable

130: And the Children Shall Lead

00:00:00   I believe steve is going to get his kid [TS]

00:00:02   on the show before i get mine on that's [TS]

00:00:04   amazing all eat it smells yeah seriously [TS]

00:00:14   the incomparable number 100 third be [TS]

00:00:19   march 2013 so Scott lay it on me [TS]

00:00:26   alright well so like I said there are [TS]

00:00:28   reason I have very different reasons for [TS]

00:00:30   liking different episodes and really I [TS]

00:00:34   just like all of the episodes but I [TS]

00:00:35   could really say that because that's [TS]

00:00:37   just lame and now that i'm rewatching in [TS]

00:00:40   order these episodes are fresh in my [TS]

00:00:42   mind so I the first one that picture [TS]

00:00:45   from the first season obviously I didn't [TS]

00:00:47   like where no man has gone before mostly [TS]

00:00:49   because Gary Mitchell oh yeah is a cool [TS]

00:00:51   character great great episode may or may [TS]

00:00:54   not appear in star trek into darkness so [TS]

00:00:56   weird weird uh looking because it's a [TS]

00:00:59   pilot so the uniforms are different [TS]

00:01:01   that's all [TS]

00:01:02   but but so tragic right that he's like [TS]

00:01:04   he's Kirk's best friend is basically [TS]

00:01:06   what we're told and because it's the [TS]

00:01:08   pilot episode you know [TS]

00:01:09   sure okay and then and then he gets a [TS]

00:01:12   little glowy eyes and and becomes the [TS]

00:01:15   murderous horrible killer best friend i [TS]

00:01:18   look forward to seeing more of you are [TS]

00:01:20   well and if the pilot we have our first [TS]

00:01:22   instance of the man who suddenly becomes [TS]

00:01:24   omnipotent yeah it's true and he has to [TS]

00:01:27   wear crazy silver a contact lenses ouch [TS]

00:01:30   aah when I watched it before I never [TS]

00:01:33   really correctly that you know they were [TS]

00:01:35   contact lenses now i'm watching it on [TS]

00:01:37   the blu-ray and it's very high [TS]

00:01:39   resolution and it is clear that those [TS]

00:01:41   things must have been incredibly painful [TS]

00:01:43   to wear their rotoscoped in some places [TS]

00:01:46   but not others because that scene where [TS]

00:01:49   where it fades out you can still see his [TS]

00:01:51   eyes and that's because the rotoscope [TS]

00:01:53   was still hair and made left it because [TS]

00:01:56   it was super creepy but yes even the [TS]

00:01:59   fade-out could not stop his eyes the [TS]

00:02:02   eyes are pretty creepy i have to say and [TS]

00:02:04   apparently he shared Gary Mitchell they [TS]

00:02:06   had contact lenses that they had to [TS]

00:02:07   where he can only wear them for a couple [TS]

00:02:08   minutes because they are excruciatingly [TS]

00:02:10   painful and he could see through a pin [TS]

00:02:11   holes so that's why you had to hold his [TS]

00:02:13   head back so he could see people which [TS]

00:02:16   is kind of course it also features the [TS]

00:02:18   tombstone of James are Kirk that [TS]

00:02:22   well it shows that Gary was not [TS]

00:02:24   omnipotent can certainly played a [TS]

00:02:26   practical joke and said that his middle [TS]

00:02:27   name was Roy and it wasn't also Sally [TS]

00:02:31   Kellerman is in that episode and she's [TS]

00:02:33   she's really great too [TS]

00:02:34   yes so that's fun episode i also like [TS]

00:02:38   Charlie X with the weird Charlie act the [TS]

00:02:42   weird [TS]

00:02:42   Charlie guy Anthony you know wishing [TS]

00:02:44   people the cornfield mentioned that [TS]

00:02:46   earlier and it ends recently [TS]

00:02:48   space seed course of course column is [TS]

00:02:54   introduced i watch that today to that [TS]

00:02:56   that is a good that it's a good episode [TS]

00:02:57   although the the sexism in that episode [TS]

00:03:00   was really awful i have to say because [TS]

00:03:03   they introduced Marla MacGyver's the the [TS]

00:03:06   historian and from the very first scene [TS]

00:03:08   she's basically terrible at her job and [TS]

00:03:10   all she wants to do is be in love with [TS]

00:03:12   the pretty man that they're thawing out [TS]

00:03:14   of the Botany Bay that's what historians [TS]

00:03:17   do [TS]

00:03:17   she's a heck of a painter though I said [TS]

00:03:18   to my family as I was watching it so [TS]

00:03:20   moral of this episode is don't let women [TS]

00:03:22   be officers on the spaceship [TS]

00:03:24   it's really good it's so bad so bad [TS]

00:03:27   great but but Montalban [TS]

00:03:29   I mean it's if you put you could tell [TS]

00:03:32   what episodes the writers of structure [TS]

00:03:34   to watched before they wrote star trek [TS]

00:03:36   to basically watch space seed and [TS]

00:03:38   corbomite maneuver and put them together [TS]

00:03:41   Montalban so good you almost believe [TS]

00:03:42   he's indian you almost well I mean they [TS]

00:03:45   don't know whether they change i think [TS]

00:03:47   at least they changed his hair he looks [TS]

00:03:49   could sort of like he could be siiick [TS]

00:03:51   until he speaks and then he's got his [TS]

00:03:53   his act normal accent rich Corinthian [TS]

00:03:56   accent but but but he's so great i mean [TS]

00:03:59   i say we i could see why you'd watch [TS]

00:04:01   that episode and say oh this is is is [TS]

00:04:04   Ricardo Montalban available because this [TS]

00:04:06   is what we should do this is said yeah I [TS]

00:04:11   remember my early days on the bustling [TS]

00:04:13   streets of Calcutta although the [TS]

00:04:15   potholes in that episode where where [TS]

00:04:17   where kirtle gives him a sure mr. [TS]

00:04:21   mysterious man who seemed vaguely [TS]

00:04:23   threatening read all of our technical [TS]

00:04:25   information and then later where he [TS]

00:04:27   where he convenes this whole like trial [TS]

00:04:31   only to say i'm dropping all the charges [TS]

00:04:33   were going to be me down to a planet [TS]

00:04:35   good luck [TS]

00:04:35   you tried to take over my sugar no hard [TS]

00:04:38   feelings because I think you're kinda [TS]

00:04:41   cool even though you tried to kill me [TS]

00:04:43   i'm giving you a planet seems weird have [TS]

00:04:46   a feeling that whole scenario probably [TS]

00:04:48   turned out okay though i'm sure it's out [TS]

00:04:50   of here it's just hard but we discussed [TS]

00:04:53   in the star trek to episode how most of [TS]

00:04:56   Starfleet crew seemed to be borderline [TS]

00:04:59   income [TS]

00:05:01   yeah it's it's just it's strange that [TS]

00:05:03   they get anything seats to fill seats to [TS]

00:05:05   fill study out 45 seems fine it'll be [TS]

00:05:08   fine [TS]

00:05:09   the historian is is just an example of [TS]

00:05:11   what it's like on most of the other [TS]

00:05:12   ships throughout the powerfully truth as [TS]

00:05:14   bumbling idiots [TS]

00:05:16   yeah going through uh let's see [TS]

00:05:19   Oh a taste of Armageddon i like because [TS]

00:05:21   when i was a kid it just blew my mouth [TS]

00:05:23   that they would have a the computers [TS]

00:05:25   fighting wars and then calculate [TS]

00:05:27   casualties and then people were just [TS]

00:05:29   willingly go into booths and I that's [TS]

00:05:31   good that's got a nice twilight zone [TS]

00:05:33   feel to it to the whole submitting to [TS]

00:05:35   death business [TS]

00:05:36   I'm glad you mentioned that Scott [TS]

00:05:37   because that is on my list very high up [TS]

00:05:39   and you know in some ways it's the [TS]

00:05:41   archetype star trek episode because you [TS]

00:05:43   know Kirk is supposed to not interfere [TS]

00:05:45   with other cultures and he totally just [TS]

00:05:48   then he whatever worldwide computer [TS]

00:05:50   controls your culture he will destroy it [TS]

00:05:52   legend I love that I that is one of my [TS]

00:05:54   certainly one of my top 5 a and it is [TS]

00:05:58   because of all the things that make the [TS]

00:06:00   original Star Trek break that it's got [TS]

00:06:01   the social commentary it's a very much a [TS]

00:06:03   cold war story i love the idea that [TS]

00:06:06   technology has allowed these people to [TS]

00:06:08   make war palatable and that Kirk comes [TS]

00:06:12   and basically says I'm going to break [TS]

00:06:14   your computer's if you want to kill each [TS]

00:06:15   other you're gonna have to actually kill [TS]

00:06:17   each other and he's so aghast by how [TS]

00:06:20   clean they made it and how they're just [TS]

00:06:22   going to send people to these this [TS]

00:06:23   horrific idea that the computers like [TS]

00:06:24   your number comes up and they just send [TS]

00:06:26   you to the disintegration chamber and [TS]

00:06:28   people go it's like well I'm a casualty [TS]

00:06:29   I've got to go and it's it's just it's [TS]

00:06:33   mind-blowing it's it's so great i mean [TS]

00:06:35   if i don't go people might actually die [TS]

00:06:38   yeah that and then so i'll just go and [TS]

00:06:41   then is going disintegrated and that and [TS]

00:06:44   that Kirk's reaction is basically this [TS]

00:06:46   is crap i I'm gonna go bro [TS]

00:06:49   I'm gonna break their society because I [TS]

00:06:51   can't allow this to continue as more or [TS]

00:06:52   less just a prime guideline in season 1 [TS]

00:06:54   prime suggestion but he's totally right [TS]

00:06:57   so it's got that it's got that's kind of [TS]

00:06:59   social twist about about nuclear war and [TS]

00:07:01   mutually assured destruction all of that [TS]

00:07:03   that's going on and and it's got i just [TS]

00:07:07   i love i love a taste of Armageddon it's [TS]

00:07:10   it's kirk at his best at saying you know [TS]

00:07:13   I don't care I don't care your society [TS]

00:07:16   stupid studies really stupid and I don't [TS]

00:07:19   screw it up and you're gonna have to [TS]

00:07:21   figure it out no we only don't mess with [TS]

00:07:23   the non stupid society I'm sorry yeah I [TS]

00:07:25   who am I to judge [TS]

00:07:27   alright Starfleet captain that's who i [TS]

00:07:29   am i'm gonna ask your computer society [TS]

00:07:33   stupid your hats or twice the stupid [TS]

00:07:35   yeah yeah bad hats but what Spock ones [TS]

00:07:38   one well we kid Landrieu we could lay [TS]

00:07:40   drew involved and all the other admitted [TS]

00:07:43   computer's been around here in norman [TS]

00:07:44   they kind of have that the whole off the [TS]

00:07:46   shoulder thing going in that episode 2 [TS]

00:07:48   it's the inventory ins and all of that [TS]

00:07:50   you know it's just like James Kirk is [TS]

00:07:52   tired of your crap he's gonna turn off [TS]

00:07:54   your computer and hey if you want to [TS]

00:07:56   fight you gotta fight like for real [TS]

00:07:58   that's enough to deal with it i love i [TS]

00:08:00   love that episode so I'm glad you [TS]

00:08:01   mentioned it Scott because I don't think [TS]

00:08:03   he gets enough credit [TS]

00:08:04   I i think i think we great episode it is [TS]

00:08:06   it is so awesome [TS]

00:08:08   yeah so good that i mock time we talked [TS]

00:08:10   about yet mirror mirror i love because [TS]

00:08:13   Spock is evil with the disappeared [TS]

00:08:16   Oh probably forgot to mention that one [TS]

00:08:18   the goatee so great of Captain Kirk has [TS]

00:08:21   a machine in his crib in his quarters [TS]

00:08:23   that lets you basically like find anyone [TS]

00:08:26   on the ship and make them disappear [TS]

00:08:27   which is awesome we should get into the [TS]

00:08:30   cornfield the space cornfield [TS]

00:08:33   yeah and it introduces the whole mirror [TS]

00:08:35   universe which is just going to thing [TS]

00:08:37   installed mine forever Syria did they [TS]

00:08:40   make it a little too much but I just [TS]

00:08:42   like any thing that happens in the [TS]

00:08:44   mirror her universe they make it [TS]

00:08:47   appropriately [TS]

00:08:48   did you know that there are whole [TS]

00:08:49   parallel universes where the American [TS]

00:08:51   flag has red stripes or the white [TS]

00:08:53   stripes shall be no worries II just [TS]

00:08:56   insane [TS]

00:08:57   I just love that episode because what's [TS]

00:08:59   not to love about that doesn't like it's [TS]

00:09:02   so great that Spock and spoke with the [TS]

00:09:04   beard that's like the evil duplicate has [TS]

00:09:07   a beard is no I think it's is the thing [TS]

00:09:09   because of the success yeah this is [TS]

00:09:11   another way that Star Trek is shaped by [TS]

00:09:13   society [TS]

00:09:14   i like the little twist there to where [TS]

00:09:15   there's the one character in the mirror [TS]

00:09:16   universe we don't know which is that [TS]

00:09:18   curse girlfriend who's his accomplice [TS]

00:09:20   and then at the very end she's been [TS]

00:09:22   assigned to the enterprise i love that [TS]

00:09:23   twist where it's like oh and now here's [TS]

00:09:25   your mirror this universe it's nice [TS]

00:09:29   that's interesting that the evil Kirk [TS]

00:09:30   can have a girlfriend but the good kirk [TS]

00:09:32   has the enterprise instead [TS]

00:09:35   that's right that's his girl yep only if [TS]

00:09:37   he were evil would he have a room in his [TS]

00:09:38   life for a woman that's an important [TS]

00:09:43   lesson for us all i think yeah and if [TS]

00:09:45   you talk about I talk about episodes [TS]

00:09:47   influential and the spin-offs later I [TS]

00:09:49   mean the Deep Space nine producers could [TS]

00:09:51   not get enough of the laminator of [TS]

00:09:53   mining this episode and and quite right [TS]

00:09:56   I've made it and made those are fun [TS]

00:09:57   episodes too so yeah I remember when [TS]

00:10:00   those came on i was so excited because [TS]

00:10:01   it's like oh yeah because i love that I [TS]

00:10:03   love that episode and in their [TS]

00:10:04   universities like you know we leave [TS]

00:10:06   mirror mirror and it's like Spock is [TS]

00:10:07   gonna basically overthrow everything and [TS]

00:10:10   make everything good which is great and [TS]

00:10:12   you FaceTime we learned that leads to [TS]

00:10:14   them being horribly destroyed because [TS]

00:10:15   they're weak then because they're nice [TS]

00:10:18   and yeah i mean that's great just to see [TS]

00:10:21   you know these characters this is in the [TS]

00:10:22   second season so you kind of the [TS]

00:10:24   characters are established and then the [TS]

00:10:25   picture because the opposite of what [TS]

00:10:27   they are so it's an interesting take on [TS]

00:10:29   it and apparently the prime directive [TS]

00:10:31   does not apply to parallel universes [TS]

00:10:32   either know he pretty much door except [TS]

00:10:36   that one does not apply it doesn't [TS]

00:10:38   really apply anywhere [TS]

00:10:39   yeah it's not a big believer in the [TS]

00:10:40   front directive is the prime directive [TS]

00:10:42   mentioned in the original series I just [TS]

00:10:44   yeah [TS]

00:10:45   oh I always really watching next-gen I [TS]

00:10:48   was just like I basically read it as [TS]

00:10:50   like in you know don't be late in [TS]

00:10:52   response to captain it's not not even [TS]

00:10:55   our prime directive is really that to [TS]

00:10:57   how often does it mention it is like you [TS]

00:10:59   know a while have half of those Rome / [TS]

00:11:03   Nazi / Chicago episodes are [TS]

00:11:05   are showing the the unwise miss of [TS]

00:11:08   violating the prime directive because [TS]

00:11:10   most of them were caused by some dude [TS]

00:11:12   from Starfleet I just feel like like [TS]

00:11:14   even if Kirk isn't big on it you think [TS]

00:11:15   like other people should be like xbox [TS]

00:11:17   and have a thing we say like I know you [TS]

00:11:20   do whatever you want but I'm required by [TS]

00:11:21   protocol remind you that the prime [TS]

00:11:23   directive you know now continue [TS]

00:11:25   Kurdistan believer [TS]

00:11:27   he'll give it lift lip service but when [TS]

00:11:29   he can when he can destroy the planet [TS]

00:11:31   there the computer that is dominating [TS]

00:11:33   the planet will do it [TS]

00:11:34   yeah you know so that becomes really [TS]

00:11:36   important when they're stuck in ancient [TS]

00:11:38   Rome for some reason it's well you have [TS]

00:11:42   to draw a line somewhere [TS]

00:11:44   yes well Scott ah well I way we did mock [TS]

00:11:48   these two episodes already but I do in [TS]

00:11:50   fact like a piece of the action and [TS]

00:11:51   patterns of course I like patterns of [TS]

00:11:53   force mostly because they're nazis in it [TS]

00:11:54   yeah and it's always fun to see ya Nazi [TS]

00:11:56   know you love that [TS]

00:11:58   how do we got scott once again going on [TS]

00:12:00   audio record for his patterns of force [TS]

00:12:02   is not about again planet the Nazis [TS]

00:12:04   makes it sound wacky and stupid but it's [TS]

00:12:07   at it it is this is it is very is always [TS]

00:12:10   kind of what it's about is a guy who [TS]

00:12:12   gets obsessed I mean you hear these [TS]

00:12:13   people that there were always people who [TS]

00:12:15   would say you know in this really [TS]

00:12:17   disturbing way like well you know Hitler [TS]

00:12:19   kind of have the right idea but it was [TS]

00:12:20   just a little misguided room he took it [TS]

00:12:22   too far if he just hadn't done all that [TS]

00:12:24   you know that you killing and all that [TS]

00:12:25   stuff the rest of it was good [TS]

00:12:27   the roads were nice yeah so John Gill in [TS]

00:12:30   patterns of force is that guy and he [TS]

00:12:33   tried his tries to work it out and no it [TS]

00:12:37   doesn't work it does not work it's [TS]

00:12:38   fundamentally evil it's not a bad and [TS]

00:12:41   he's like decrepit and dying and then [TS]

00:12:44   dead and uses a figurehead and its [TS]

00:12:46   really it's not it's not a bad episode [TS]

00:12:48   at all [TS]

00:12:49   no I like it yeah I mean I'd it does [TS]

00:12:51   kind of have a feel of hey look we have [TS]

00:12:53   these leftover Nazi Nazi uniform she [TS]

00:12:55   also wore to wasn't that long ago and [TS]

00:12:58   you know even even still I think it's a [TS]

00:13:00   pretty good and see my great you know [TS]

00:13:02   Kirk and Spock Spock wearing a helmet [TS]

00:13:04   the entire time to hide his ears natural [TS]

00:13:06   and piece of the action is just a comedy [TS]

00:13:09   episode like trouble I think I'd better [TS]

00:13:10   i think it's funnier than trouble with [TS]

00:13:12   tribbles i love the scene when he [TS]

00:13:13   distracts the gangsters by teaching them [TS]

00:13:15   for this Ben isn't [TS]

00:13:17   yes that's the whole reason i love this [TS]

00:13:18   episode except at night on thursday and [TS]

00:13:22   it would and vic tayback from alice is [TS]

00:13:24   in this episode one of the game's see [TS]

00:13:26   now it's always good to see mouth and [TS]

00:13:28   there's and Spock has a hat again and a [TS]

00:13:31   suit and a machine gun I'd advise you to [TS]

00:13:34   keep styling idea Curt bone full 90 yeah [TS]

00:13:38   I recall an important factor Nemo has an [TS]

00:13:40   SS uniform [TS]

00:13:41   alright in patterns of force but in a [TS]

00:13:43   piece of the action they're both done up [TS]

00:13:44   like like gangsters with the with the [TS]

00:13:46   pinstripe suits and all that and that's [TS]

00:13:48   right you know and so and super funny [TS]

00:13:51   and uh and Scotty has to translate [TS]

00:13:55   gangster speak into under Federation [TS]

00:13:59   speak heaters are all phasers are right [TS]

00:14:03   i love that I love piece of the action [TS]

00:14:05   the kid that like wants to be cut in for [TS]

00:14:07   a piece of the action when Kirk like [TS]

00:14:09   conspires with the kid to fake the kid [TS]

00:14:11   like hurting himself and so they can get [TS]

00:14:13   into the yeah it's that I love piece of [TS]

00:14:15   the action is great [TS]

00:14:16   that's one of my that's one of my favs [TS]

00:14:18   and it's and it's really it's underrated [TS]

00:14:20   because trouble with tribbles get all [TS]

00:14:21   the acclaim piece of the action just as [TS]

00:14:22   funny that's it's hard to be the trouble [TS]

00:14:25   with a gangster [TS]

00:14:26   it's your Vic tabak not as cuddly as a [TS]

00:14:29   triple it's true it's a but i will say [TS]

00:14:32   for patterns of force that you get not [TS]

00:14:34   only shirtless shirtless Kirk but [TS]

00:14:36   shirtless Spock [TS]

00:14:37   oh yes you do because they have to get [TS]

00:14:39   the little manacles off in the laser [TS]

00:14:40   that's right thing [TS]

00:14:42   the light ya light bulb laser and it [TS]

00:14:46   work spoke is that good okay he's [TS]

00:14:48   MacGyver Vulcan my god that's got the [TS]

00:14:50   whole comedy bit with him standing on [TS]

00:14:52   Kirk's recently with back and say me who [TS]

00:14:57   tortured that's that's the episode also [TS]

00:14:59   where they stand the planet [TS]

00:15:00   I didn't I wasn't sure how that worked [TS]

00:15:02   but is that a row in in piece of the [TS]

00:15:04   action made likes done a whole city [TS]

00:15:06   block right yeah from space you know [TS]

00:15:10   no you're not yes you know maybe those [TS]

00:15:13   people they all have cancer now but it's [TS]

00:15:15   making you have answer yes they're [TS]

00:15:18   gangsters but what you mentioned a space [TS]

00:15:20   madness a lot in the first few episodes [TS]

00:15:22   of Star i just i go i remember that the [TS]

00:15:24   the stunning is conveniently green so [TS]

00:15:26   it's like you know it's just green light [TS]

00:15:28   all over the city block everyone [TS]

00:15:30   I sure that red light red light would be [TS]

00:15:32   bad in keeping with the gangster theme [TS]

00:15:34   the entire planet now has syphilis sorry [TS]

00:15:37   huh oops yeah minor side effect with the [TS]

00:15:40   stun setting of the enterprise phasers [TS]

00:15:42   that is a common side effect of of [TS]

00:15:45   Captain Kirk visiting places so and Kirk [TS]

00:15:49   goes syphilis frequently follows you [TS]

00:15:51   know basic stuff up space syphilis what [TS]

00:15:56   happens when the Federation comes and [TS]

00:15:58   declares prohibition over the whole [TS]

00:16:00   planet just shut down at us [TS]

00:16:02   oh by the way again talking about tropes [TS]

00:16:05   that are replayed later in korba might [TS]

00:16:07   maneuver they do the whole you will be [TS]

00:16:12   destroyed in 10 of your earth minutes [TS]

00:16:14   which I cannot at the time i'm sure it [TS]

00:16:17   was fine but I cannot listen to 10 of [TS]

00:16:20   your earth minutes without laughing now [TS]

00:16:22   you don't look for you know when you [TS]

00:16:24   have a villain you want them to do the [TS]

00:16:26   unit conversion for you yeah just it [TS]

00:16:28   looks really awkward if you die like [TS]

00:16:30   while you're doing the math on your [TS]

00:16:31   fingers to try and figure out how much [TS]

00:16:33   how many minutes is that inner 30 [TS]

00:16:34   minutes [TS]

00:16:35   yeah you will die in 17 orbits one [TS]

00:16:38   doctor who that was exactly it's like [TS]

00:16:39   the Daleks are not as as kind as as [TS]

00:16:42   Baylock isn't that they're like you will [TS]

00:16:44   be destroyed in 10 rels like what the [TS]

00:16:46   hell're rels is that second is that [TS]

00:16:48   minutes is that ours [TS]

00:16:50   I don't know converted for hang on let [TS]

00:16:52   me get on google yeah yeah they're not [TS]

00:16:54   known for this rights reserved 17 rails [TS]

00:16:56   in earth minutes your minutes are [TS]

00:16:59   irrelevant [TS]

00:17:00   sorry your earth minutes 4 minutes space [TS]

00:17:04   dollars [TS]

00:17:05   oh it's it's like it's like 40 years ok [TS]

00:17:08   I'm going then we've got time you go [TS]

00:17:11   right ahead with the seven rules okay [TS]

00:17:14   Scott what else [TS]

00:17:15   oh I didn't mention we mentioned Scotty [TS]

00:17:18   and so just a funny aside the first [TS]

00:17:20   episode where Scotty makes an appearance [TS]

00:17:21   i was watching with my wife and she said [TS]

00:17:23   who is that and I said that Scotty and [TS]

00:17:26   she said it does have a mustache like [TS]

00:17:28   okay it's scotty trust me movie Scotty [TS]

00:17:31   has a mustache movies gonna have lost [TS]

00:17:33   that is very large a TV show [TS]

00:17:36   Scotty they had clean shaven know much [TS]

00:17:38   for that mustache [TS]

00:17:40   yeah it's important it's like a [TS]

00:17:41   different guy [TS]

00:17:42   it's true I stolen web I I pic right [TS]

00:17:46   because I i liked the web and it also is [TS]

00:17:49   a callback it's called back in [TS]

00:17:51   enterprise [TS]

00:17:52   yes which I like so yeah I was again i [TS]

00:17:55   have always captured my attention when [TS]

00:17:57   Greg moss and I wrote our Star Trek The [TS]

00:18:00   Next Generation spec script in college [TS]

00:18:02   narrates it feat it featured yes i get i [TS]

00:18:07   said next generation spec script Steve [TS]

00:18:09   I'm I'm conceding we had the foliage [TS]

00:18:14   says that has the bad guys in our in our [TS]

00:18:16   script because the Tholian web was so [TS]

00:18:18   cool but they didn't like our script so [TS]

00:18:20   we had to wait until enterprise for them [TS]

00:18:22   to come back to steal your idea you [TS]

00:18:24   answer yeah that damn damn right [TS]

00:18:27   also uh I just I like the fact that Kirk [TS]

00:18:29   is presumed dead and everybody has to [TS]

00:18:30   like there's a really nice scene with [TS]

00:18:32   Spock and McCoy where they're basically [TS]

00:18:33   like talking about what they're going to [TS]

00:18:35   do now Kirk is dead and it's kind of [TS]

00:18:38   cool while and then of course all the [TS]

00:18:40   drama sapped away by Kirk appearing [TS]

00:18:42   floating ghost-like to curtail her while [TS]

00:18:45   she's wearing her underwear but goes Jim [TS]

00:18:49   up until then [TS]

00:18:50   yeah that's a normal thing yeah this [TS]

00:18:52   kirk you know as a his machine in his [TS]

00:18:55   quarters but matter her Kirk as a [TS]

00:18:58   machine that can make people disappear [TS]

00:18:59   regular cancer she that lets it project [TS]

00:19:02   his ghostly image and women's quarters [TS]

00:19:05   yeah that's my Kurt that would that [TS]

00:19:08   would be a good would you rather [TS]

00:19:10   actually haha and my final one we did [TS]

00:19:15   mention and it is heavy-handed and i [TS]

00:19:19   only like it because the Riddler isn't [TS]

00:19:21   it uh the Year last battlefield I just [TS]

00:19:24   enjoy a corsa question Frank Gorshin so [TS]

00:19:28   it gets a plus one for me [TS]

00:19:30   alright okay should I go I got my list [TS]

00:19:34   to Jason most of them have been taken [TS]

00:19:35   most of them but taking I've been [TS]

00:19:37   talking about the corbomite maneuver [TS]

00:19:38   there's something about it it's the [TS]

00:19:40   first episode after they shot the pilots [TS]

00:19:42   so it's trying to define what the show [TS]

00:19:44   is going to be their surprise surprising [TS]

00:19:46   amount of conversation about like [TS]

00:19:49   shipboard life but it's got Kirk at his [TS]

00:19:51   best right where he's just making things [TS]

00:19:53   up [TS]

00:19:54   ok like like post box [TS]

00:19:56   like well we lost the chess match [TS]

00:19:57   against it's over and we're all dead and [TS]

00:19:59   Kirk's like no not chess bak poker and [TS]

00:20:03   he's and he's like kayln frequencies [TS]

00:20:05   open we've invented a thing that's where [TS]

00:20:07   rubber and you're glue and everything [TS]

00:20:09   bounces off of us and sticks to you good [TS]

00:20:11   luck and you know cut it to her and this [TS]

00:20:16   giant species like tell us more about [TS]

00:20:18   your curve right Kirk thinkers and [TS]

00:20:22   request denied and Emily well will tell [TS]

00:20:25   you to a planet then it's so great that [TS]

00:20:27   he that skirt right he's he's thinking [TS]

00:20:30   him self out of these situations it's [TS]

00:20:33   why i say that starter to where he does [TS]

00:20:35   the whole thing with the prefix code I [TS]

00:20:36   feel like it's lifted right out of the [TS]

00:20:38   corbomite maneuver and of course then [TS]

00:20:39   you get this great ending where this [TS]

00:20:42   this alien that you've seen who looks [TS]

00:20:44   super scary but also like a puppet [TS]

00:20:46   because it's a puppet because he's an [TS]

00:20:48   alien on Star Trek is a puppet neatly [TS]

00:20:50   explains why the puppet is so poorly [TS]

00:20:52   pick that one watching when I was [TS]

00:20:55   watching that episode with my lady she [TS]

00:20:57   was like that is so clearly a puppet [TS]

00:20:59   think that's seriously wait for it and [TS]

00:21:01   wait for it once again audience you know [TS]

00:21:05   several steps ahead of the crowd [TS]

00:21:06   enterprise yeah you know it's a put not [TS]

00:21:09   not just a puppet a crudely meet action [TS]

00:21:11   without arms yeah really isn't the whole [TS]

00:21:14   corbomite gambit makes perfect sense [TS]

00:21:17   because baloch being worldly in the ways [TS]

00:21:19   of the universe surely knows that the [TS]

00:21:21   galaxy is ripe with people that have [TS]

00:21:23   ultimate power and continueth whatever [TS]

00:21:26   they want at a moment's notice sure to [TS]

00:21:28   show up all the time and Kirk might well [TS]

00:21:30   be one of the beings of pure energy [TS]

00:21:32   yeah corbomite exactly sounds like one [TS]

00:21:35   of these two lane guys that's that's [TS]

00:21:37   great that's so great so I like that [TS]

00:21:39   episode so weird but it's great [TS]

00:21:41   Scott mentioned a taste of Armageddon [TS]

00:21:42   love that a lot [TS]

00:21:44   we mentioned a mock time devil in the [TS]

00:21:46   dark city village forever i want to [TS]

00:21:48   mention the doomsday machine uh which is [TS]

00:21:50   a real action adventure thing it's got [TS]

00:21:53   William wyndham as Commodore Decker who [TS]

00:21:56   has a in a great like tragic moment he [TS]

00:21:59   beams his team he beams his crew down to [TS]

00:22:02   a planet so that he can defeat this [TS]

00:22:04   horrible machine and then the machine [TS]

00:22:06   destroys the planet and leaves him alone [TS]

00:22:08   so it's due [TS]

00:22:10   his entire crew to death and he's the [TS]

00:22:11   only survivor which is the opposite of [TS]

00:22:13   what a captain he thinks he's doing the [TS]

00:22:15   going down with the ship thing and it [TS]

00:22:17   drives him insane and so then he takes [TS]

00:22:18   command of the enterprise and and and [TS]

00:22:22   there's a lot of great stuff in the in [TS]

00:22:24   the remastered version where they [TS]

00:22:25   because they went back and tried to redo [TS]

00:22:28   all of the special effects and CGI and I [TS]

00:22:30   think they were pretty faithful and and [TS]

00:22:32   did a pretty good job actually I don't [TS]

00:22:33   have a star wars kind of problem with it [TS]

00:22:36   no I think they did it well but that [TS]

00:22:38   episode actually looks great with the [TS]

00:22:41   redone version because they couldn't [TS]

00:22:43   like their multiple ships and there's [TS]

00:22:45   you know and and in the old model stage [TS]

00:22:47   they couldn't do it and into in the in [TS]

00:22:50   the remastered version it looks great [TS]

00:22:52   it's fast-paced and windows performances [TS]

00:22:56   beeping he's he's he's crazy but it's [TS]

00:22:59   great it's i love that episode it's it's [TS]

00:23:01   a it's a real great fast-moving action [TS]

00:23:04   adventure he's obsessed he's insane [TS]

00:23:06   he's extremely well acted as Decker to [TS]

00:23:08   ya he really gives off kind of that mean [TS]

00:23:12   he seems like he's in control and yet [TS]

00:23:13   there's that kind of undercurrent of [TS]

00:23:15   this guy is going to do something insane [TS]

00:23:18   very shortly here it's much more subtle [TS]

00:23:20   than the acting you generally can't on [TS]

00:23:22   the air is right right and Kirk loses [TS]

00:23:24   command of a ship right which is the [TS]

00:23:25   worst thing for Kirk right whenever he [TS]

00:23:27   loses command of the ship that is he [TS]

00:23:29   he's really upset and decker outranks [TS]

00:23:32   him to basically says I'm gonna take [TS]

00:23:34   your ship and destroy it [TS]

00:23:35   you can't do anything about it may [TS]

00:23:37   finally you know relieve him of duty and [TS]

00:23:39   he steals a shuttlecraft and kills [TS]

00:23:41   himself and and in doing so provides the [TS]

00:23:44   way for the enterprise to survive as you [TS]

00:23:47   do and i love the idea too that there's [TS]

00:23:49   and this is this was lifted by star trek [TS]

00:23:52   for it's a very similar concept of Star [TS]

00:23:54   Trek for where there's a machine it's [TS]

00:23:55   coming from like outside the galaxy from [TS]

00:23:58   a race of beings you know beyond our [TS]

00:24:01   comprehension and like literally it's [TS]

00:24:04   just sort of like they left turned on [TS]

00:24:06   and it's now destroying us because they [TS]

00:24:10   weren't paying attention anymore and [TS]

00:24:12   it's sort of demonstrate for you know [TS]

00:24:14   that the machine that threatens earth is [TS]

00:24:16   very similar to that and I like that [TS]

00:24:18   it's kind of creepy that it's not an [TS]

00:24:20   alien race that's out to get us it's an [TS]

00:24:22   alien race that so it [TS]

00:24:23   advanced that their detritus will [TS]

00:24:25   completely destroy us and they don't [TS]

00:24:27   care because it's just like junk that [TS]

00:24:29   you know whatever let it go with 2nd [TS]

00:24:32   deal with it [TS]

00:24:32   yeah you're society's garbage over the [TS]

00:24:36   galaxy was like wow yeah that episode [TS]

00:24:40   was written by Norman Spinrad who is a [TS]

00:24:42   very good science fiction right yeah [TS]

00:24:44   yeah there's a lot of great scifi [TS]

00:24:46   writers wrote a theater sturgeon wrote a [TS]

00:24:49   bunch of like at least two star trek [TS]

00:24:51   episodes too so so you mentioned where [TS]

00:24:53   no man has gone before [TS]

00:24:54   balance of terror I like arena a lot [TS]

00:24:57   it's the Gorn yet to guide a lizard suit [TS]

00:25:02   but I like that they're at Vasquez rocks [TS]

00:25:04   the rock formation that's been in every [TS]

00:25:06   sci-fi movie and TV show of all time [TS]

00:25:08   ever but this is like the core of it [TS]

00:25:11   where Kirk asta that essentially the the [TS]

00:25:14   episode is being watched by the crew of [TS]

00:25:16   the enterprise which i also love that [TS]

00:25:17   like Spock and McCoy they're all on the [TS]

00:25:19   bridge watching Kirk as he does the [TS]

00:25:21   episode and commenting on it mystery [TS]

00:25:24   science theater style almost like if you [TS]

00:25:27   can find some coal and some diamonds [TS]

00:25:30   that's got it he spewed out without I i [TS]

00:25:32   do something about that i love i love [TS]

00:25:34   that and i'm also a sucker for episode [TS]

00:25:36   shot on location because so many of the [TS]

00:25:38   alien planets and start record the [TS]

00:25:39   Cyclorama things where it's the stand [TS]

00:25:42   stage and it's very it's like got a pink [TS]

00:25:44   sky and it's totally fake when it's not [TS]

00:25:47   it's the the hills just outside of Los [TS]

00:25:48   Angeles right well I love that it's it's [TS]

00:25:51   California or a soundstage that's all [TS]

00:25:53   they've got [TS]

00:25:53   yeah I love it I love it when it's when [TS]

00:25:55   it's the grapevine or bass rocks it [TS]

00:25:58   makes me sad when it's the pink sound [TS]

00:25:59   stage right yeah I'm so arena is good [TS]

00:26:03   journey to Babel which I mentioned with [TS]

00:26:04   with mark leonard as as as sorry xbox [TS]

00:26:08   father and Jane Wyatt as Amanda his [TS]

00:26:11   mother that's a fun episode because not [TS]

00:26:14   only do we get that the the Vulcan stuff [TS]

00:26:17   but there's this whole spy planes lots [TS]

00:26:19   of alien races and yeah there's like a [TS]

00:26:20   fake Andorian and liking guys [TS]

00:26:23   rather the Tellarites that the pig [TS]

00:26:24   aliens were were quite quarrelsome and [TS]

00:26:28   and the blue and torian's and like [TS]

00:26:30   little tiny guys who don't say anything [TS]

00:26:32   but drink lots of space alcohols [TS]

00:26:37   boos yeah uh and and there's that crazy [TS]

00:26:40   spaceship that's like just like a [TS]

00:26:41   pinpoint of light and it goes like warp [TS]

00:26:43   10 but you but it's a it's on a suicide [TS]

00:26:46   mission and so let's get this kind of [TS]

00:26:48   spy feel + + this great series of [TS]

00:26:53   escalating jeopardy kind of things we're [TS]

00:26:55   sorry has a heart attack and he needs a [TS]

00:26:58   blood transfusion and only spot can give [TS]

00:27:00   it to him but then Kirk gets stabbed by [TS]

00:27:03   a spy and so Kirk a spot can't give up [TS]

00:27:07   command because he's now taking commands [TS]

00:27:10   Kirk's been incapacitated so then his [TS]

00:27:12   father is going to die so that Kirk [TS]

00:27:13   fakes being better it gets on the bridge [TS]

00:27:17   to send spot to go have the surgery and [TS]

00:27:19   then Kirk is calling Scotty to come take [TS]

00:27:21   over for him when the attack happens [TS]

00:27:23   it's this great sequence of all of these [TS]

00:27:25   things leading together that I really [TS]

00:27:27   love just as an action-adventure kind of [TS]

00:27:30   thing plus the whole detail like Spock's [TS]

00:27:32   relationship with his father and that [TS]

00:27:34   just i love i love that that's a DC [TS]

00:27:36   fontana special look that's a really [TS]

00:27:39   great episode and then the other two [TS]

00:27:42   that we haven't mentioned that i wanted [TS]

00:27:43   to bring up are the ultimate computer [TS]

00:27:45   which is great because it's all about [TS]

00:27:48   computers and technology replacing [TS]

00:27:51   workers which is fascinating [TS]

00:27:54   given that the time period it's [TS]

00:27:57   basically i've invented the computer [TS]

00:27:58   that can replace Captain Kirk [TS]

00:28:00   so let's remove his chair and put a [TS]

00:28:02   blinking computer in its place and of [TS]

00:28:04   course the computer goes horribly bad [TS]

00:28:06   and next attacking all the other star [TS]

00:28:09   ships and all that and there's dr. [TS]

00:28:12   daystrom who's a mad scientist to who [TS]

00:28:15   you know I've invented the m5 it's so [TS]

00:28:18   beautiful don't destroy my creation but [TS]

00:28:20   but in and watching it it blows me away [TS]

00:28:23   watching it now that that what what that [TS]

00:28:25   episode is really about is like you know [TS]

00:28:29   workers being replaced by technology [TS]

00:28:32   which is a really interesting thing and [TS]

00:28:34   and keeps happening [TS]

00:28:36   that's just part of the march of [TS]

00:28:37   technology and like when it one of the [TS]

00:28:39   machines better than humans at doing a [TS]

00:28:42   particular job at what happens to the [TS]

00:28:43   people who are replaced which again I [TS]

00:28:46   love the star trek tried to tackle [TS]

00:28:48   issues like that [TS]

00:28:50   de-stress backstory and that one is [TS]

00:28:51   really cool too because he's he's the [TS]

00:28:53   guy who peach too early and yeah there's [TS]

00:28:56   one thing I ever did could could measure [TS]

00:28:58   up to his earlier discoveries and right [TS]

00:29:00   you got a little reckless towards the [TS]

00:29:01   end because he was trying to do [TS]

00:29:03   something is as impressive as his [TS]

00:29:05   earlier try too hard and he realizes [TS]

00:29:08   finally but he's you know he's gone [TS]

00:29:09   horribly wrong and of course in the in [TS]

00:29:12   the store trying to to do some things [TS]

00:29:15   that are groundbreaking he's he's he's [TS]

00:29:17   black so you get that kind of like he's [TS]

00:29:19   the computed black computer genius which [TS]

00:29:21   is casting that's a bold casting [TS]

00:29:23   decision for 1968 which i think is cool [TS]

00:29:26   to not not until diehard we see another [TS]

00:29:28   one of his yeah that's right and [TS]

00:29:30   terminator 2 ok but but i love i love i [TS]

00:29:35   love that one and and again in the [TS]

00:29:37   remastered effects when they've got like [TS]

00:29:38   five different enterprise class ships [TS]

00:29:40   they don't have one model anymore in the [TS]

00:29:42   remaster effect so they can do some more [TS]

00:29:44   interesting things then then we only [TS]

00:29:47   have one look it's a ship and another [TS]

00:29:50   ship but they never see them at the same [TS]

00:29:52   time and then the other one i want to [TS]

00:29:54   mention is what are little girls made of [TS]

00:29:56   which is a more or it's an early first [TS]

00:30:01   season more creepy it's like a Christine [TS]

00:30:03   chapel episode kind of which is weird [TS]

00:30:06   but it's it's got a TED Cassidy as the [TS]

00:30:10   giant android ruck and it's it's gotta [TS]

00:30:16   with christine chapels old boyfriend [TS]

00:30:18   Roger Korby who is a man again a mad [TS]

00:30:20   scientist and he transfers his [TS]

00:30:22   consciousness into work into an android [TS]

00:30:24   body and they're down in caves and and [TS]

00:30:27   they try to make a duplicate of Kirk and [TS]

00:30:29   I had that has III that episode always [TS]

00:30:33   sticks with me is having some of like [TS]

00:30:34   the worst wardrobe f 0 cuz there's to [TS]

00:30:37   remember the android I i want to call [TS]

00:30:40   the dresses but that's not really fair [TS]

00:30:41   right there one there jumps and a [TS]

00:30:44   jumpsuit partial torso cover and this [TS]

00:30:46   yeah and then it right and they didn't [TS]

00:30:48   like the black and the green half black [TS]

00:30:49   half cream [TS]

00:30:50   yeah it's like everyone has slides a [TS]

00:30:53   gray yeah he's in monk's robes yeah you [TS]

00:30:56   know giant spooky guy but it's so it's [TS]

00:30:58   so like gothic and weird and Twilight [TS]

00:31:00   Zone II don't know [TS]

00:31:01   anything wheel with Kirk on it sure yeah [TS]

00:31:04   that's actually exactly [TS]

00:31:06   yes that excess was actually written by [TS]

00:31:08   robert bloch yes I'm not a psycho [TS]

00:31:12   yeah that's right and apparently also [TS]

00:31:13   the short stories upon which catspaw and [TS]

00:31:16   wolf in the fold yes sorry catspaw [TS]

00:31:18   interesting but uh but I like that I [TS]

00:31:21   like that episode because it is also one [TS]

00:31:23   of those episodes where it's mostly down [TS]

00:31:25   on the planet and it's kind of a you [TS]

00:31:28   know again it's it's like I said it's [TS]

00:31:29   that it's almost Twilight something it's [TS]

00:31:31   not about the ships and it's about it's [TS]

00:31:33   about we put these characters in this [TS]

00:31:35   weird situation where they're down in [TS]

00:31:36   these caves that are like go on forever [TS]

00:31:40   you get the sense and it's this android [TS]

00:31:42   like rock the android has been there for [TS]

00:31:44   thousands of years and was found by [TS]

00:31:46   Roger Korby and he remembers the old [TS]

00:31:48   ones which were this whatever the race [TS]

00:31:50   was that created them that has since [TS]

00:31:52   disappeared or died or turned into a [TS]

00:31:54   being of pure energy like you do on Star [TS]

00:31:57   Trek happens but but but but it's kind [TS]

00:32:00   of creepy that like you know the humans [TS]

00:32:01   are playing around with all this [TS]

00:32:03   technology and yet there's this big [TS]

00:32:04   hulking eight android who remembers back [TS]

00:32:08   when there were the really smart [TS]

00:32:10   creatures who built this place and you [TS]

00:32:12   guys are just fiddling around with their [TS]

00:32:13   leavings and I I i like that so I like [TS]

00:32:16   that episode and the ones that I don't [TS]

00:32:19   like so miri which is the planet that [TS]

00:32:23   looks exactly like Earth but isn't earth [TS]

00:32:25   and all the adults die but the kids are [TS]

00:32:28   alive don't do an episode with kids just [TS]

00:32:31   don't haha this kitchen like 25 year old [TS]

00:32:34   kid all I know that's that's true it's [TS]

00:32:35   like every extra from at any kind of [TS]

00:32:38   like 30 movie of like hey there [TS]

00:32:42   I don't know tell them Jim tell them Jim [TS]

00:32:44   telling Jim know blah blah blah [TS]

00:32:47   I i like i like the idea behind that one [TS]

00:32:50   a lot more than like the actual [TS]

00:32:51   execution [TS]

00:32:52   yeah that's right little children of the [TS]

00:32:54   corn creepy kids exist and the parents [TS]

00:32:57   are gone in some way it was [TS]

00:32:58   yeah it is is a nice idea and it was [TS]

00:33:00   actually mind a little better by Star [TS]

00:33:02   Trek a little bit later with the and the [TS]

00:33:04   children shall lead them right branches [TS]

00:33:06   which is also kind of a bad episode but [TS]

00:33:08   also slightly better in terms of you [TS]

00:33:11   know Mary Mary's got some creepy parts [TS]

00:33:13   of it because you know once you [TS]

00:33:15   over the fact that this isn't a planet [TS]

00:33:16   that's exactly like her if accept [TS]

00:33:18   whatever like they shot us get over that [TS]

00:33:20   uh the other day he got you know it's [TS]

00:33:24   it's it's I don't understand that it [TS]

00:33:26   makes no sense but but but is it is [TS]

00:33:28   creepy because it spoke post-apocalyptic [TS]

00:33:30   world and all that but it ends up being [TS]

00:33:32   I don't know it falls apart i don't i [TS]

00:33:34   don't like miri so much I I don't want [TS]

00:33:38   to sorry she's very nice but whatever I [TS]

00:33:43   the i put the alternative factor down on [TS]

00:33:46   my list of hate episodes [TS]

00:33:47   that's the one with Lazarus you may not [TS]

00:33:50   even remember this episode it's dunno [TS]

00:33:52   there's a there's a guy with a beard [TS]

00:33:54   named Lazarus and he's got a shadow has [TS]

00:33:57   there's the bad one in the good one but [TS]

00:33:58   that's it [TS]

00:33:59   so it turns out there's also another [TS]

00:34:00   Lazarus who's bad who's from a parallel [TS]

00:34:03   universe and they keep switching it's [TS]

00:34:06   terrible it's so terrible [TS]

00:34:08   it's not actually called Lazarus called [TS]

00:34:10   something else isn't it no it's called [TS]

00:34:12   Lazarus and anti Lazarus yeah they're [TS]

00:34:14   both Lazarus but yeah I think this is [TS]

00:34:17   one of the ones that i did not quite [TS]

00:34:19   stay away it's so bad it's so busy [TS]

00:34:21   people again planted the Nazis not as [TS]

00:34:23   bad as some of these other episodes [TS]

00:34:25   catspaw we mentioned so bad the empath [TS]

00:34:29   we mentioned terrible [TS]

00:34:31   Scott I'm sorry let that be your last [TS]

00:34:33   battlefield which is essentially the [TS]

00:34:35   same episode as the alternative factor i [TS]

00:34:37   love again i love the fact that star [TS]

00:34:39   star trek tried to do social commentary [TS]

00:34:43   but when it's literally one side of me [TS]

00:34:47   is black on the other side is white and [TS]

00:34:48   you the other side is black and one side [TS]

00:34:51   is white and therefore we must kill each [TS]

00:34:53   other [TS]

00:34:54   can't we all just get along man it's so [TS]

00:34:57   painful [TS]

00:34:58   we are the best cheese on all and so [TS]

00:35:01   preachy and will and literally it's like [TS]

00:35:04   I don't know what's going on there [TS]

00:35:05   yelling they're grappling now they're [TS]

00:35:07   not grappling anymore it's very much [TS]

00:35:09   like the alternative factor actually [TS]

00:35:11   it's it's kind of nonsensical and [TS]

00:35:13   preachy and I don't like sorry Frank [TS]

00:35:17   Gorshin yes that's good yeah I always [TS]

00:35:21   always took it the ridiculous premise [TS]

00:35:23   and I heavy-handed this [TS]

00:35:26   as a way of amplifying the ridiculous [TS]

00:35:29   make you know the ridiculous idea of [TS]

00:35:31   racism of racism is actually a few yes [TS]

00:35:34   so ridiculous that we will make this [TS]

00:35:35   ridiculous episode yes the episode is [TS]

00:35:37   just as terrible as racism miss ya [TS]

00:35:42   well put its that say it's very [TS]

00:35:44   successful because it's like racist and [TS]

00:35:48   then the last 2i have our again it's the [TS]

00:35:52   episode that you even forget exist that [TS]

00:35:54   which survives which is a third late [TS]

00:35:56   third season episode which has nothing [TS]

00:35:58   to command it's like a Cyclorama planet [TS]

00:36:01   and then there's this woman who appears [TS]

00:36:03   and kills people with the touch and it I [TS]

00:36:07   I whatever 40 years later I still don't [TS]

00:36:10   understand why there's a story there [TS]

00:36:13   it's a it's it's it's terrible and [TS]

00:36:15   nothing happens and in the end they like [TS]

00:36:17   shrugging like well some people died i [TS]

00:36:19   get it will go back to the ship [TS]

00:36:22   you know some days it's just a mission [TS]

00:36:23   you know you know you're gonna fill out [TS]

00:36:25   the reports redshirt thailand it you [TS]

00:36:28   know we got it I got a scan each planet [TS]

00:36:30   they're not all gonna be exciting if [TS]

00:36:31   you're going to talk about an episode [TS]

00:36:33   that has the like prototypical redshirts [TS]

00:36:35   dying [TS]

00:36:36   I mean I guess it's the whole I mean [TS]

00:36:38   right from from from the mantrap all the [TS]

00:36:40   way through that which survives you have [TS]

00:36:42   that but that which survives just [TS]

00:36:44   there's nothing it's it's the most [TS]

00:36:48   uninteresting star trek episode of all [TS]

00:36:51   time it's just nothing [TS]

00:36:53   it's awful it's just nothing blank [TS]

00:36:55   emptiness pointless and then and then on [TS]

00:36:59   the other extreme is the way to Eden [TS]

00:37:01   which is space hippies including [TS]

00:37:04   checkups girlfriend uh-huh and they come [TS]

00:37:07   we reach right and Spock places like [TS]

00:37:09   autoharp his Vulcan autoharp and there's [TS]

00:37:12   some singing and there's like a hippie [TS]

00:37:15   cult leader with big ears and it's a [TS]

00:37:18   person is yours [TS]

00:37:20   the sport no no no you given up this [TS]

00:37:23   side of paradise which is yeah not a bad [TS]

00:37:25   episode Spock hanging from the tree tree [TS]

00:37:28   with a big grin yeah yeah i know i have [TS]

00:37:30   had seen the way to eat another spoiler [TS]

00:37:32   is pretty blonde girlfriend know the way [TS]

00:37:34   to even know Steve you have so much to [TS]

00:37:37   look forward to I've [TS]

00:37:38   no way that is a that is yes it is space [TS]

00:37:41   hippies that's that's when you really [TS]

00:37:42   feel rejected technology but still on a [TS]

00:37:46   space yeah that that's where you that's [TS]

00:37:48   where it's like the Amish taking a cab [TS]

00:37:50   it's like that kinda it's it's time you [TS]

00:37:53   have to do it that's where you here if [TS]

00:37:55   the sixties knocking on the door of star [TS]

00:37:56   trek and said hey it's the 16-man pay [TS]

00:37:59   attention to us and it's so terrible so [TS]

00:38:02   terrible so those are the those are the [TS]

00:38:04   ones you know i love this show dearly [TS]

00:38:06   but there are some episodes that i find [TS]

00:38:08   it almost impossible to watch and the [TS]

00:38:10   way to Eden the empath i think is the [TS]

00:38:13   worst one I think that's even I think [TS]

00:38:15   that's the worst one [TS]

00:38:17   so that's why I was and what I can't [TS]

00:38:18   believe we didn't mention the enemy [TS]

00:38:19   within which is a not a bad episode [TS]

00:38:21   where Kirk gets split in two [TS]

00:38:23   yeah and i just watched it was also a [TS]

00:38:25   little dog little dog without before it [TS]

00:38:27   gets into little dog in a very bad [TS]

00:38:30   little costume yet for every pore space [TS]

00:38:32   dog wedding you deserve a little horn [TS]

00:38:37   strapped to your head you know [TS]

00:38:38   yeah it's just weird they just use it as [TS]

00:38:41   a prop people are carrying the dog for [TS]

00:38:43   no particular reason doesn't have a fine [TS]

00:38:45   name like is it do they claim it's [TS]

00:38:47   something else or no it's just like a [TS]

00:38:48   space dogs gonna warn they don't really [TS]

00:38:50   badly walking around Italy just found it [TS]

00:38:52   on the planet yeah so they took a test [TS]

00:38:54   let's experiment on it by beating it [TS]

00:38:55   through basic training don't I just if [TS]

00:38:58   you bring a Spacedock home like don't [TS]

00:39:01   bring it to the bridge they write and [TS]

00:39:02   killing the space dogs thing that [TS]

00:39:04   bothers me about the enemy within is [TS]

00:39:05   that is i'm not quite sure what it says [TS]

00:39:08   about gender politics and masculinity [TS]

00:39:12   I'm not sure I can endorse it for what [TS]

00:39:14   it says because it seems to suggest that [TS]

00:39:16   that totally masculine Kirk is a rapist [TS]

00:39:21   an alcoholic but also like bizarrely [TS]

00:39:25   flamboyant and over the top and then and [TS]

00:39:29   then other Kirk is he's wearing eyeliner [TS]

00:39:31   when he's Superman yeah some reason and [TS]

00:39:33   another Kirk is is strangely passive and [TS]

00:39:35   effeminate in a in a different way and [TS]

00:39:38   and can't get any management so I feel [TS]

00:39:40   like I feel like when Kirk is split into [TS]

00:39:42   you know both parts are kind of more of [TS]

00:39:46   kind of questionable in terms of but the [TS]

00:39:49   writer of the letter is certainly want [TS]

00:39:50   to counter [TS]

00:39:51   each other that they're have their habit [TS]

00:39:53   you guess the lesson is the Kirk is more [TS]

00:39:55   than the sum of his parts i guess so [TS]

00:39:57   it's not blessed be his parts are bad [TS]

00:40:00   I've got some questions about the gender [TS]

00:40:01   politics of of the enemy within [TS]

00:40:03   and one of our listeners in the chatroom [TS]

00:40:05   asked about the Galileo seven [TS]

00:40:07   I like that episode I didn't put on my [TS]

00:40:08   list but you know that's the whole you [TS]

00:40:10   know Spock has to deal with anti Vulcan [TS]

00:40:12   racism and also from somebody other than [TS]

00:40:14   bones for a change yeah so spot as deal [TS]

00:40:16   with anti Vulcan racism the the burdens [TS]

00:40:19   of command and also like abominable [TS]

00:40:21   snowman girl of people who throw big [TS]

00:40:23   rocks made out of a of plastic and it's [TS]

00:40:27   a lot to deal with that the shuttlecraft [TS]

00:40:29   and in the end Spock creates it doesn't [TS]

00:40:32   illogical thing and and for no good [TS]

00:40:36   reason and that it saves them which is [TS]

00:40:40   just like in your face block that logic [TS]

00:40:43   i like that i like so I like that [TS]

00:40:45   episode that's that's a really didn't [TS]

00:40:47   put on my list but that's a really [TS]

00:40:49   claustrophobic episode right there in [TS]

00:40:51   that there there's that short a small [TS]

00:40:53   amount of space outside the the [TS]

00:40:55   shuttlecraft and they're in the [TS]

00:40:56   shuttlecraft and meanwhile back on the [TS]

00:40:58   enterprise basically Kurt is kirk is [TS]

00:41:00   arguing with a diplomat or a bureaucrat [TS]

00:41:03   or something like he does [TS]

00:41:05   we gotta get to our next place that [TS]

00:41:07   happens like eight episodes where [TS]

00:41:09   there's a bureaucrat on the bridge was [TS]

00:41:10   like snap to it Kirk I got a thing in a [TS]

00:41:12   box that i need to take to a starbase [TS]

00:41:14   and I wanted there to yesterday so lose [TS]

00:41:18   the ship and Kirk's like you're not the [TS]

00:41:19   captain I'll tell you what I'm gonna [TS]

00:41:21   find my people first and that's right [TS]

00:41:24   tell you tell him Kirk you tell your dad [TS]

00:41:27   I don't know why that's a thing but [TS]

00:41:29   that's how you tell in the the one where [TS]

00:41:33   Kirk is duplicated which we were just [TS]

00:41:34   talking about the name escapes me the [TS]

00:41:36   enemy within the enemy isn't exactly [TS]

00:41:38   he's like let's just leave well I have [TS]

00:41:40   problems with the enemies and all [TS]

00:41:41   because you know Sulu and for people are [TS]

00:41:43   trapped in a super cool planet yeah and [TS]

00:41:45   they they check in with him every once [TS]

00:41:46   in a while and he's like oh it's like [TS]

00:41:48   negative 80 degrees and he's not wearing [TS]

00:41:50   he's wearing his regular uniform [TS]

00:41:53   yeah we should totally all be dead is [TS]

00:41:55   that is that the first appearance of [TS]

00:41:56   heating rocks with the phaser beam [TS]

00:41:59   yes that's yes yes that's which is very [TS]

00:42:01   cleverly beam down some blankets or do [TS]

00:42:03   they split into good blankets and [TS]

00:42:05   evil blanket it's worth a try to be down [TS]

00:42:09   heaters but they don't work good work [TS]

00:42:11   this one's got birds in it oh it's a bad [TS]

00:42:13   black the evil ones don't just don't use [TS]

00:42:17   the evil blankets people [TS]

00:42:19   yeah you know the evil blankets come [TS]

00:42:21   with with eyeliner their eyeliner and [TS]

00:42:25   smallpox [TS]

00:42:25   yeah Kirk was not in his native american [TS]

00:42:31   format that time Romero would all been [TS]

00:42:33   over pretty early i am Kira you're on [TS]

00:42:38   wow that's so starts the 30 to 40 [TS]

00:42:42   year-old perspect male perspective on [TS]

00:42:44   the series if you're interested [TS]

00:42:46   yes i would like to hear what you're [TS]

00:42:48   doing your feminine perspective on this [TS]

00:42:51   leaves a real series there's what [TS]

00:42:54   happens to be one right here who needs [TS]

00:42:55   to go to bed very soon so [TS]

00:42:57   hello hello hello hello [TS]

00:43:02   tell us what you like about Star Trek [TS]

00:43:03   well everything that is the correct [TS]

00:43:08   answer that's good [TS]

00:43:09   are there are there certain episodes [TS]

00:43:11   that you remember really liking well a [TS]

00:43:15   couple of them but one of my favorites [TS]

00:43:18   was the naked time [TS]

00:43:19   ok so why do you like that one well [TS]

00:43:22   mostly because when Sulu was short [TS]

00:43:29   lesson he was roaming the ship with a [TS]

00:43:30   sword and he was threatening to fight [TS]

00:43:33   the crew i really like that to where [TS]

00:43:36   he's like he's like laughing and and [TS]

00:43:38   dancing around with his sword ness no [TS]

00:43:40   shirt on and he's all sweaty he's like [TS]

00:43:42   yeah very excited about finding people [TS]

00:43:46   with this sword and all the people run [TS]

00:43:47   away from him because they are cowards [TS]

00:43:49   he's the only guy on the spaceship with [TS]

00:43:51   a sword that's really scary i don't want [TS]

00:43:53   to mess around with Sulu when he has a [TS]

00:43:55   sword [TS]

00:43:56   it's true it's true they could have [TS]

00:43:58   stunned him or something [TS]

00:44:00   you have other ones that you like well I [TS]

00:44:05   like the one where they're in a time [TS]

00:44:07   like Nazi Germany [TS]

00:44:08   alrighty to good choice because Nazis [TS]

00:44:13   are cool right but they're bad and they [TS]

00:44:15   have to be defeated [TS]

00:44:17   that's right but it's it's a complicated [TS]

00:44:18   relationship exactly and Spock and Kirk [TS]

00:44:21   at they're like walked up and they have [TS]

00:44:23   to like use the they make like a little [TS]

00:44:25   laser to get themselves out of the of [TS]

00:44:27   the prison right at any other any other [TS]

00:44:30   ones that you really like another one [TS]

00:44:32   that I really like is the one where [TS]

00:44:34   there's to kirks good and evil [TS]

00:44:37   we were just talking about that one and [TS]

00:44:38   that someone with there's the little dog [TS]

00:44:40   that turns into the like the good the [TS]

00:44:43   mean dog in the nice cool dog do you [TS]

00:44:46   have a you have a favorite character [TS]

00:44:48   well have a week a stinker who else [TS]

00:44:52   could a choice right now I like mr. [TS]

00:44:53   Spock but captain kirk is pretty great [TS]

00:44:55   yeah yeah so even though this show is [TS]

00:44:59   like really old it's like more than more [TS]

00:45:01   than 40 years old I you know it i think [TS]

00:45:05   it's really cool that you still that you [TS]

00:45:07   still like it and that you and your dad [TS]

00:45:09   are watching it [TS]

00:45:10   yeah it's interesting yeah it's [TS]

00:45:13   different from stuff that you see today [TS]

00:45:15   right but yeah there aren't any other [TS]

00:45:17   shows i think from 50 years ago [TS]

00:45:19   45 years ago that people are still [TS]

00:45:21   watching today really like people your [TS]

00:45:23   age especially alright yeah there [TS]

00:45:26   anything that you don't like any of us [TS]

00:45:29   yeah what yeah what yeah what don't you [TS]

00:45:31   like [TS]

00:45:32   well some of the episode where they just [TS]

00:45:35   then in different places in time like [TS]

00:45:38   some of the ones where they're just one [TS]

00:45:40   of my least favorites was the end of [TS]

00:45:42   season two I think where they were [TS]

00:45:45   trying to make a spin-off oh yes [TS]

00:45:48   assignment earth with it with the with [TS]

00:45:52   the girl and the and the guy who's like [TS]

00:45:54   a spy and that and that black cat [TS]

00:45:57   yeah yeah the the star trek people [TS]

00:46:00   aren't in that very much [TS]

00:46:01   are there there's just like yeah very [TS]

00:46:05   confusing it's just yeah it's just [TS]

00:46:07   rubber Berta and Gary seven and the and [TS]

00:46:09   the rocket there's a lot of we keep [TS]

00:46:12   seeing the rocket a lot in that way [TS]

00:46:14   yeah and the cat little black cat okay [TS]

00:46:17   well that that's great i'm glad that you [TS]

00:46:19   could share your your your thoughts [TS]

00:46:23   about star trek with us on the podcast [TS]

00:46:24   that was really good thanks for thanks [TS]

00:46:26   for doing it [TS]

00:46:28   yeah and [TS]

00:46:30   staying up late Saturday night well [TS]

00:46:34   thank you for letting me talking thank [TS]

00:46:36   you for telling us about Star Trek and [TS]

00:46:37   how you like it that's good because [TS]

00:46:39   we're all old people so it's good to [TS]

00:46:41   hear what you want you think of it [TS]

00:46:43   whoo that was pretty awesome Steve yeah [TS]

00:46:47   yes yeah that was great i felt a new a [TS]

00:46:49   different perspective was necessary [TS]

00:46:51   since I think so i've been only my old [TS]

00:46:54   team young and team extremely young [TS]

00:46:56   yes keep your old to be slightly less [TS]

00:46:58   old and wow and I didn't actually young [TS]

00:47:03   yeah that's great that's great i love [TS]

00:47:05   this is watching them but like I said at [TS]

00:47:07   the beginning you know my kids have been [TS]

00:47:09   watching them at kind of over my [TS]

00:47:11   shoulder that they're like some stuff i [TS]

00:47:13   watch and they just they just blow past [TS]

00:47:15   with Star Trek they kind of stop and [TS]

00:47:16   watch it which is actually does amaze me [TS]

00:47:19   that that anything made that long ago [TS]

00:47:21   could still be even processed by people [TS]

00:47:25   born in the 21st century [TS]

00:47:27   it's true I don't know how it's possible [TS]

00:47:29   me neither [TS]

00:47:30   that's great so you have a few episodes [TS]

00:47:33   left right [TS]

00:47:34   you and your daughter yeah we've just [TS]

00:47:36   finished some of the day of the Dove I [TS]

00:47:39   think Oh which is the the entity aboard [TS]

00:47:43   ship that's causing the yeah mines gone [TS]

00:47:45   somewhere to to face the 40 non trapped [TS]

00:47:50   members of the Enterprise crew commander [TS]

00:47:52   Kor one of our what three great Klingon [TS]

00:47:55   commander necessarily it was fairly [TS]

00:47:58   non-war like actually in this [TS]

00:48:00   no no he's a he comes back in Deep Space [TS]

00:48:04   nine [TS]

00:48:05   you never know about this Klingons I [TS]

00:48:06   mean they go between your basic [TS]

00:48:07   wingard's slightly Clinton's or Klingons [TS]

00:48:10   yeah sometimes they're slightly brownish [TS]

00:48:13   and sometimes they're more brownish [TS]

00:48:15   sometimes they have weird eyebrow [TS]

00:48:16   sometimes they don't it they explain it [TS]

00:48:20   it's not worth getting a budget the [TS]

00:48:22   budget that was not the budget was not [TS]

00:48:23   you know the enterprise they explain why [TS]

00:48:25   the clans looking way they do and I i [TS]

00:48:27   prefer the explanation in deep space [TS]

00:48:29   nine where works is we do not speak of [TS]

00:48:31   it [TS]

00:48:33   just let it go [TS]

00:48:36   they are Klingons we do not speak of it [TS]

00:48:39   what is it is a little sad that the the [TS]

00:48:42   primary a competitive races with the [TS]

00:48:45   humans are smartly people they only [TS]

00:48:47   really differ in a really eyebrows for [TS]

00:48:51   the most part yes and ears sometimes you [TS]

00:48:54   have to have darker skin people aboard [TS]

00:48:56   the Enterprise [TS]

00:48:57   so that's not really a difference well [TS]

00:48:59   that's even in the trouble with tribbles [TS]

00:49:00   there's the Klingon that passes human [TS]

00:49:03   right you're right Tony that you get the [TS]

00:49:05   it's really brilliant right the art [TS]

00:49:07   Garvin is the easy clean and supplies [TS]

00:49:10   yeah yes because trouble don't like in [TS]

00:49:13   trouble [TS]

00:49:14   yes yeah that's that's the great thing [TS]

00:49:18   about troubles that's it that's it [TS]

00:49:21   they couldn't get the feeling that the [TS]

00:49:24   Klingons or the Clintons triples love [TS]

00:49:26   everybody except for Klingon but yeah [TS]

00:49:29   because they don't like eyebrows and [TS]

00:49:35   purposes [TS]

00:49:36   yeah that is the trouble with that is [TS]

00:49:39   they don't like long as they have hate [TS]

00:49:41   in their hearts for Klingons and that is [TS]

00:49:43   the trouble [TS]

00:49:44   shame on them horrible racist there's an [TS]

00:49:47   episode with a Klingon who's got a lumpy [TS]

00:49:51   head on one side of his body and then [TS]

00:49:53   not and then another one where it's [TS]

00:49:55   reversed and it's all about racism man [TS]

00:49:58   yeah I get it [TS]

00:49:59   yeah they really are the most hateful of [TS]

00:50:01   spaces bath implements center of brushes [TS]

00:50:06   yeah there are there a one of those [TS]

00:50:08   called the the global possible some kind [TS]

00:50:12   of pop thing there Lou fast group now [TS]

00:50:14   that's not a loofah sponge type deal [TS]

00:50:17   about the trip boys not a space loofah [TS]

00:50:20   Wow [TS]

00:50:21   now that's some sort of all you're wrong [TS]

00:50:22   and ok i attack called I apologize to [TS]

00:50:27   the race of triples [TS]

00:50:29   I'm sorry troubles now who's the racist [TS]

00:50:33   ones i know i know it yes who was on the [TS]

00:50:35   other ones move loofahs tribbles they [TS]

00:50:39   all look alike to me maybe you should [TS]

00:50:40   watch let that be your last battle Fagin [TS]

00:50:43   be your last battlefield who could tell [TS]

00:50:46   the difference between up a powderpuff [TS]

00:50:47   in a loofah I look a like to this guy I [TS]

00:50:51   know it's all the same [TS]

00:50:54   there's in is it there was an episode [TS]

00:50:57   that i was just watching today that said [TS]

00:50:59   it's space seed it's like well the the [TS]

00:51:03   people on the ship or from all the parts [TS]

00:51:05   of the world you know North America [TS]

00:51:08   Latin oriental I'm thinking oh no don't [TS]

00:51:14   try no but they don't know in the 23rd [TS]

00:51:17   century they don't know about your space [TS]

00:51:18   racism they are passed it man don't know [TS]

00:51:22   about taboo words because they're their [TS]

00:51:24   color to color blind society man unless [TS]

00:51:26   you get stranded on a planet with Spock [TS]

00:51:28   and then it's all out the window [TS]

00:51:30   oh yeah the Balkans know they well they [TS]

00:51:33   suck green-blooded you to be honest the [TS]

00:51:36   blue eyeshadow i think is what really [TS]

00:51:37   turns people off [TS]

00:51:38   that's true we're trying to fool his [TS]

00:51:40   it's box-yellow pallor appears to change [TS]

00:51:44   a lot from episode to episode they [TS]

00:51:46   didn't know what they were doing with I [TS]

00:51:47   yeah it was very early episodes he is [TS]

00:51:50   extremely yellowy except for his blue [TS]

00:51:52   eye shadow of course and then sort of [TS]

00:51:54   fluctuate and is and in in the cage [TS]

00:51:57   doesn't he have like kind of reddish or [TS]

00:51:59   even better area yeah I read about I am [TS]

00:52:02   unfortunately red-letter day boys [TS]

00:52:04   I think to predict what's bad girl [TS]

00:52:07   oh yeah by accident I'm not spotted it [TS]

00:52:10   was you know I are old yeah and that he [TS]

00:52:12   later does i am science podcast yeah i [TS]

00:52:15   read i don't know about him when I ever [TS]

00:52:17   these are not of my own fees [TS]

00:52:19   yeah out of my all of our Leonard in his [TS]

00:52:21   own right yes I mean yeah well or maybe [TS]

00:52:23   the ghost written i don't know but i [TS]

00:52:25   guess the earlier versions of Spock were [TS]

00:52:26   much more like demonic basically and he [TS]

00:52:30   had he had red face it a reddish tint [TS]

00:52:33   right and i think they wanted him [TS]

00:52:34   have a tail but probably that wasn't [TS]

00:52:36   explained all the yelling then do right [TS]

00:52:38   people were not big on that you so yeah [TS]

00:52:41   but then like you his best line in the [TS]

00:52:43   original pilot is they they beam away [TS]

00:52:45   they all get on the transporter beam but [TS]

00:52:49   only number one who is major Barrett and [TS]

00:52:53   the the yeoman the two women they beam [TS]

00:52:56   off because they're trying to find a [TS]

00:52:58   mate for for Captain Pike and all the [TS]

00:53:00   man are still there with their rifles [TS]

00:53:02   and as soon as that that moment happens [TS]

00:53:05   Spock steps forward and shouts the women [TS]

00:53:08   that's his big moment but women it's [TS]

00:53:15   funny I guess a commentary on the times [TS]

00:53:17   the fact that they they have this one [TS]

00:53:19   alien character on the bridge aboard [TS]

00:53:21   ship kind of like the key did the other [TS]

00:53:24   you know well that night in the woman [TS]

00:53:26   they couldn't make him completely Vulcan [TS]

00:53:29   had be half-human athol for people to be [TS]

00:53:31   able to still relate to him [TS]

00:53:32   well it's so in the original pilot it [TS]

00:53:34   was unclear whether it was half or not [TS]

00:53:36   he was just a guy with the point of [TS]

00:53:37   years but they had the the female first [TS]

00:53:39   officer right and they are great irony [TS]

00:53:41   is that that a space alien at on your [TS]

00:53:45   bridge crew sets to find a woman [TS]

00:53:48   second-in-command yeah we imagined they [TS]

00:53:53   got rid of her better helmets to worry [TS]

00:53:56   about they turned her into a blonde [TS]

00:53:58   nurse instead [TS]

00:54:00   ok you come a long way baby and the [TS]

00:54:04   voice of the computer and voice the [TS]

00:54:05   computer there are you [TS]

00:54:06   that's true I horribly screechy voice of [TS]

00:54:09   a computer [TS]

00:54:10   yes still computer yeah computers [TS]

00:54:14   Kirkwood's kill exactly [TS]

00:54:16   yeah we could do a whole separate [TS]

00:54:17   episode on technology in Star Trek the [TS]

00:54:19   original series [TS]

00:54:20   oh it's fascinating they got a lot right [TS]

00:54:22   i mean a communicator you know it's not [TS]

00:54:25   it doesn't go into space but it's a [TS]

00:54:26   little flip out like foam me thing kind [TS]

00:54:30   of but they have all the little bubble [TS]

00:54:32   switches that get flipped which I'll [TS]

00:54:34   I'll makes me laugh it's like to do this [TS]

00:54:36   complicated thing any like flip switches [TS]

00:54:38   group [TS]

00:54:39   alright captain got it one-on-one but of [TS]

00:54:44   the thing that actually amuses me the [TS]

00:54:46   most of all the technology and star trek [TS]

00:54:48   is the it is the the fact that they [TS]

00:54:52   couldn't conceive of a network of shared [TS]

00:54:56   storage of a computer storage so they've [TS]

00:54:58   got these powerful computers that [TS]

00:54:59   reactor voice command and that there are [TS]

00:55:02   databases and all of that is we take for [TS]

00:55:05   granted now but i think was really smart [TS]

00:55:06   on their part and yet they have this [TS]

00:55:08   real connection to like tapes and record [TS]

00:55:13   tapes and you here's a little those look [TS]

00:55:15   at their tiny right there [TS]

00:55:16   they're like little memory cards locks [TS]

00:55:18   and plastic which is cool because again [TS]

00:55:20   that's really forward thinking that [TS]

00:55:21   there's think these record tapes but but [TS]

00:55:23   they're not there's still sneakernet [TS]

00:55:25   right and and they couldn't get over [TS]

00:55:28   that to be like if only we could network [TS]

00:55:30   guys together somehow [TS]

00:55:31   yeah like--on he says like it will [TS]

00:55:34   recoil tie you into RR record tapes like [TS]

00:55:38   oh you're so close to just use some [TS]

00:55:39   clothes which is interesting because [TS]

00:55:41   there are apparently like seven or eight [TS]

00:55:43   places aboard the ship where you can [TS]

00:55:44   take control of the controls and lock [TS]

00:55:47   out the rest of the controls engineer is [TS]

00:55:49   the best place bearing is the best [TS]

00:55:51   player there's nobody down there except [TS]

00:55:52   Scotty and the singles leading squad so [TS]

00:55:54   yeah I didn't wander off a log [TS]

00:55:57   it's the rest of engineering they stare [TS]

00:55:59   at things and then when the ship lurches [TS]

00:56:01   they all fall one and then they lead to [TS]

00:56:05   the other self it that's their sole [TS]

00:56:07   purpose the computer really runs the [TS]

00:56:09   ship those guys are therefore honestly [TS]

00:56:11   the bar to entry for the engineering [TS]

00:56:12   degrees really gone downhill the only [TS]

00:56:14   3rd century it's true all these [TS]

00:56:16   computers yeah yeah it's all automated [TS]

00:56:18   those guys are just their market time [TS]

00:56:20   yeah that's friend waiting to be shot [TS]

00:56:22   because there were red shirts scotch [TS]

00:56:25   whisky is it his purpose is to claim [TS]

00:56:27   that things can't be done while doing [TS]

00:56:28   them [TS]

00:56:29   yeah that's right this is impossible [TS]

00:56:32   yeah then we're done with that beautiful [TS]

00:56:33   go right i mean that with that would [TS]

00:56:35   which was played up in in the episode of [TS]

00:56:38   next generation where he saw and what [TS]

00:56:40   else Geordie you didn't tell him how [TS]

00:56:42   long would really take two chill people [TS]

00:56:44   that don't do that you can you never be [TS]

00:56:47   you'll never get a reputation it as a [TS]

00:56:49   miracle that you gotta say no it'll take [TS]

00:56:52   months to do that I fixed it [TS]

00:56:55   honestly there's one one person aboard [TS]

00:56:56   ship that should be concerned about [TS]

00:56:57   being replaced by a computer it's that [TS]

00:56:59   dude [TS]

00:57:01   yeah fair enough major Barrett [TS]

00:57:03   Roddenberry could very easily say that [TS]

00:57:05   the engines can't take much more of this [TS]

00:57:08   captain [TS]

00:57:09   well Steve I'm gonna I'm gonna I'm gonna [TS]

00:57:12   say do I have to flip a switch and say [TS]

00:57:15   hailing frequencies open [TS]

00:57:16   Oh hailing frequencies open hailing [TS]

00:57:21   frequencies important thank God you were [TS]

00:57:22   here her it was great that they cast [TS]

00:57:24   michelle nichols and she was by all [TS]

00:57:26   accounts it an inspirational figure but [TS]

00:57:28   especially early on in the show they [TS]

00:57:30   didn't really have anything for her to [TS]

00:57:32   do later she doesn't have a lot of [TS]

00:57:34   biting the back of her hand when [TS]

00:57:36   something is terrifying [TS]

00:57:37   yeah but she just did a lot of she was [TS]

00:57:39   like running the phones she was the [TS]

00:57:40   receptionist on the enterprise which is [TS]

00:57:42   not a big step forward [TS]

00:57:45   does she in fact do the keening whale [TS]

00:57:47   that accompanies the beginning credits [TS]

00:57:48   or is that someone oh that's someone [TS]

00:57:51   else's because I heard her i think it [TS]

00:57:53   was the the Space Shuttle farewell [TS]

00:57:55   ceremony and she was standing there at [TS]

00:57:58   the podium has a speaker at that and she [TS]

00:58:01   began by doing that there is a great [TS]

00:58:04   photo of michelle nichols and Barack [TS]

00:58:08   Obama both doing the Vulcan salute in [TS]

00:58:11   the Oval Office wow that's worth it [TS]

00:58:13   worth of you that's just one of those [TS]

00:58:15   things like I cannot believe I am [TS]

00:58:17   looking at this picture means of the [TS]

00:58:19   President of the United States and [TS]

00:58:21   Lieutenant over a both giving me the [TS]

00:58:23   live long and prosper salute [TS]

00:58:25   I don't know yes the Romulan candidate [TS]

00:58:29   yes yeah well really as if anybody [TS]

00:58:33   hasn't seen the John Hodgman bit where [TS]

00:58:36   he is at the the Washington press corps [TS]

00:58:39   dinner a couple years ago and does a [TS]

00:58:42   whole bit about how the Nerds inherit [TS]

00:58:44   the earth and and essentially what he's [TS]

00:58:46   saying is is a Obama you you're a [TS]

00:58:49   gigantic nerd right you understand all [TS]

00:58:52   these references i'm giving you at one [TS]

00:58:53   point he mentions the Vulcan hand salute [TS]

00:58:55   and Obama unprompted other than that [TS]

00:58:58   just does it and judgment is beside [TS]

00:59:01   himself like he doesn't know what to say [TS]

00:59:04   he's like I can't believe that just [TS]

00:59:05   happened oh it's it's worth looking on [TS]

00:59:09   YouTube it's a it's a it's a really [TS]

00:59:11   funny bit [TS]

00:59:12   alright I think we're I think we've [TS]

00:59:14   beaten this [TS]

00:59:14   this is like an eight-part episode now [TS]

00:59:16   maybe but like Star Trek i think is [TS]

00:59:18   what's become the star trek sucks [TS]

00:59:20   basically it's not that good star wars [TS]

00:59:22   is totally better and i think we already [TS]

00:59:23   know is the great importance of star [TS]

00:59:26   trek with without which it's doubtful we [TS]

00:59:28   would ever gotten the ballot of Bilbo [TS]

00:59:30   Baggins [TS]

00:59:31   oh that isn't certainly for later Gary [TS]

00:59:36   to every things that you made it to like [TS]

00:59:37   removed from your memory and then other [TS]

00:59:39   people just hit you in the face with a [TS]

00:59:41   little i prefer Leonard boys recording [TS]

00:59:43   of I had a hammer pero I had a hammer [TS]

00:59:47   actually a highly illogically quite a [TS]

00:59:49   good child highly illogical that way he [TS]

00:59:51   combs his hair so so before we go one [TS]

00:59:55   last thing I wanted to say because we [TS]

00:59:56   talk about Star Wars and Star Trek and [TS]

00:59:58   and the end the battle between [TS]

00:59:58   and the end the battle between [TS]

01:00:00   people who love Star Wars and people [TS]

01:00:01   love star trek and I I like Star Wars a [TS]

01:00:03   lot I a lot and it just wasn't the [TS]

01:00:07   formative thing that Star Trek was for [TS]

01:00:09   me but the one thing I'll say about [TS]

01:00:11   where Star Trek cast the advantage is [TS]

01:00:13   that Star Trek as a television series [TS]

01:00:15   allowed you to spend a whole lot more [TS]

01:00:17   time with the characters the original [TS]

01:00:20   series as well as all the all the [TS]

01:00:22   spin-offs that have happened and the one [TS]

01:00:24   thing about Star Trek coming back as a [TS]

01:00:26   movie franchise which I think JJ Abrams [TS]

01:00:28   dinner did a great job of revitalizing [TS]

01:00:30   it i love seeing those characters that [TS]

01:00:32   the original series characters again and [TS]

01:00:36   young because all the movies were about [TS]

01:00:38   them being old so having be young and [TS]

01:00:41   setting out in the first adventures i [TS]

01:00:42   think is great but the fact is with [TS]

01:00:44   these movies you know you see two hours [TS]

01:00:47   and then four years later you get two [TS]

01:00:48   more hours and there's something to be [TS]

01:00:50   said for the time that Star Trek was [TS]

01:00:53   able to take on TV to spend with these [TS]

01:00:57   characters and that's something Star [TS]

01:00:58   Wars you know Star Wars as great as it [TS]

01:01:00   is [TS]

01:01:00   that's three movies with with Leia and [TS]

01:01:03   Luke and Han Solo and that's all we got [TS]

01:01:05   less than six hours in total in the TV [TS]

01:01:07   special rights less than six hours and [TS]

01:01:09   then of course our podcast which were [TS]

01:01:10   about 20 hours and this one which is [TS]

01:01:14   nearing that yeah so so I i think that [TS]

01:01:17   is Star Trek's great advantage which its [TS]

01:01:19   losing as a movie franchise which is why [TS]

01:01:21   I hope eventually they will go back to [TS]

01:01:23   TV with some form of it because you know [TS]

01:01:25   there's somethings TV does better than [TS]

01:01:26   movies and I think the reason that so [TS]

01:01:28   many of us have such a a soft spot in [TS]

01:01:31   our heart so you know warm feelings [TS]

01:01:32   toward star trek is because there are [TS]

01:01:35   are so there's so much of it and we get [TS]

01:01:38   to see these characters over time and [TS]

01:01:40   learn lots of little things about them [TS]

01:01:42   whereas with movies whether it's Star [TS]

01:01:45   Wars or something else your left parsing [TS]

01:01:47   little tiny beats you know one in the [TS]

01:01:49   Star Trek movies these characters get a [TS]

01:01:51   beat or two a plot point or two and [TS]

01:01:53   that's it [TS]

01:01:54   whereas in start in the series you could [TS]

01:01:57   do you know sometimes good and sometimes [TS]

01:01:59   bad but you could have whole episodes [TS]

01:02:02   where there's a subplot about you know [TS]

01:02:04   Chekhov or Sulu as simple as Sulu just [TS]

01:02:07   running around with a sword right and [TS]

01:02:09   Star Wars you have to guess when the [TS]

01:02:10   characters are probably getting laid [TS]

01:02:12   in Star Trek you know you know you see [TS]

01:02:14   it started boots are off the boot off [TS]

01:02:17   the boots are back and it just happened [TS]

01:02:19   exactly if they cut back to Han Solo in [TS]

01:02:22   the Millennium Falcon's go-to Cloud City [TS]

01:02:23   and he's putting his boots back on then [TS]

01:02:26   we would know the command blouse was off [TS]

01:02:29   yep that's 10 to 25 seconds [TS]

01:02:33   yeah but anyway that that's that's the [TS]

01:02:35   one thing that I i say is that I'd say [TS]

01:02:36   the big difference between Star Trek and [TS]

01:02:38   Star Wars and Star Trek has always had [TS]

01:02:39   more time because they've had episodes [TS]

01:02:42   you know the street star trek original [TS]

01:02:44   had three years next generation had [TS]

01:02:46   seven years to tell stories about these [TS]

01:02:49   characters and they feel you know it is [TS]

01:02:51   a little less special but it's also just [TS]

01:02:53   a lot more time with a lot more depth [TS]

01:02:56   and you can get the corners of the [TS]

01:02:57   characters in a way that you know Star [TS]

01:02:59   Wars just can't do as a movie franchise [TS]

01:03:01   so although that may change very soon as [TS]

01:03:03   many way things are going now it seems [TS]

01:03:05   like we're gonna get your story soon [TS]

01:03:08   apparently shirts and inverted world [TS]

01:03:10   yeah this town it could be AG 88 and me [TS]

01:03:14   but the TV series that's right over to [TS]

01:03:17   the Fox yeah I saw that show is called [TS]

01:03:20   night rider yeah and the thing I like [TS]

01:03:24   about star trek over star wars and I do [TS]

01:03:27   like Star Wars I don't want people to [TS]

01:03:28   think I don't like Star Wars because I [TS]

01:03:30   do I love star trek I like Star Wars is [TS]

01:03:33   that Star Trek is very optimistic and [TS]

01:03:36   it's about the future of humanity and [TS]

01:03:38   tries to deal with these things these [TS]

01:03:40   these big topics that are important you [TS]

01:03:42   know it's very is rooted in the present [TS]

01:03:44   but it's set in the future right so [TS]

01:03:45   that's the cool thing about star trek to [TS]

01:03:48   me [TS]

01:03:48   star wars they started off right at the [TS]

01:03:51   back and say this is a galaxy far far [TS]

01:03:53   away and long time ago [TS]

01:03:55   these are not humans this is a [TS]

01:03:57   completely different place they look [TS]

01:03:59   just like us but they're not us [TS]

01:04:00   this has no real bearing on the world [TS]

01:04:03   now it's a kind of a fable or you know [TS]

01:04:06   and so that's a different kind of [TS]

01:04:08   storytelling but i think it's less it is [TS]

01:04:10   less impactful to me because of that [TS]

01:04:12   kind of separation from the world [TS]

01:04:16   I just like the mini skirts [TS]

01:04:19   the community cheese factor in the fact [TS]

01:04:21   that my daughter and I have something to [TS]

01:04:22   bond over [TS]

01:04:23   yeah that's all good it's all good too i [TS]

01:04:27   love i love that that a style even [TS]

01:04:30   though it's not entirely sixties you get [TS]

01:04:31   that you get the miniskirts and all that [TS]

01:04:33   and it's like yeah that's kind of cool [TS]

01:04:35   it's truly alien now not complaining and [TS]

01:04:38   i will say the the blu rays are just got [TS]

01:04:42   some of the original series and it they [TS]

01:04:43   look fantastic era because they shot it [TS]

01:04:45   on film so sure there's much more [TS]

01:04:47   resolution than we ever saw on those old [TS]

01:04:49   reruns and then they also redid you can [TS]

01:04:52   watch it with or without the new effects [TS]

01:04:53   but I can do which is great i think the [TS]

01:04:55   new effects are nice and they did after [TS]

01:04:56   well done a surround audio mix that's [TS]

01:04:59   really nice it's really good they did a [TS]

01:05:01   fantastic is CBS and paramount took I [TS]

01:05:04   guess it's just us took a lot of time to [TS]

01:05:06   get it right and i think they did get it [TS]

01:05:08   right and of course it's great that [TS]

01:05:10   they've included the original so that [TS]

01:05:11   for you know the purest out there yeah [TS]

01:05:13   can watch the old models if they liked [TS]

01:05:15   to have seen only the cgi based ones [TS]

01:05:17   because that's what streaming on netflix [TS]

01:05:19   but this young I might go out and invest [TS]

01:05:22   in the blu-rays just so i can play spot [TS]

01:05:24   the fishing line huh that's half the [TS]

01:05:27   appeal to me of the that's an easy game [TS]

01:05:29   it is very easy looking for again it's [TS]

01:05:32   one of those it's one of those drinking [TS]

01:05:33   game items fishing line shirtless Spock [TS]

01:05:35   i'm shirtless kirk spock sad he's dead [TS]

01:05:39   yes I'm a doctor not a ya know about you [TS]

01:05:43   and it's on the blue races where you [TS]

01:05:44   with a press of a button you can switch [TS]

01:05:46   from the original special effects to the [TS]

01:05:49   fancy special rights which is cool [TS]

01:05:51   yeah they did a great job finally a good [TS]

01:05:53   use of blu-ray it's true [TS]

01:05:56   at the end of Star Trek it always amuses [TS]

01:05:58   me to see that it is a Desilu production [TS]

01:06:01   I don't know why it just yeah that's the [TS]

01:06:03   companies offer ever i love lucy just [TS]

01:06:06   like early twilight zone [TS]

01:06:07   yeah there's something about how they [TS]

01:06:09   the yeah the the production company got [TS]

01:06:11   bought by Desilu and then it was sucked [TS]

01:06:14   up by paramount but but yes and they [TS]

01:06:17   shot at the desert loose to do so yes [TS]

01:06:19   Desi Arnaz I'm sure had a had a had some [TS]

01:06:22   money out of Star Trek their bizarre and [TS]

01:06:26   now belongs to CBS even though it aired [TS]

01:06:27   on NBC because it went through Viacom [TS]

01:06:30   and I guess paramount does the movies [TS]

01:06:32   and CBS owns the TV and it's this weird [TS]

01:06:35   kind of alliance between the two of them [TS]

01:06:36   that they believed as he bought his long [TS]

01:06:38   long trailer is specifically for [TS]

01:06:40   residuals from Star Trek there you go [TS]

01:06:42   so so yeah the blu rays are good that's [TS]

01:06:45   a I i did a good job they did you know [TS]

01:06:49   they had the film so the HD masters were [TS]

01:06:51   there and and you can make it look [TS]

01:06:53   really amazing like show that i watched [TS]

01:06:57   whatever every episode 50 times and you [TS]

01:06:59   see things that you didn't see before [TS]

01:07:00   because it's that much clearer and then [TS]

01:07:03   yeah they did the right thing with [TS]

01:07:04   special effects which is they they [TS]

01:07:06   really said what were they trying to do [TS]

01:07:08   right what would they have done if they [TS]

01:07:10   could have done it and a lot of times [TS]

01:07:12   it's just some subtle camera movements [TS]

01:07:14   it's the lighting where you've got [TS]

01:07:16   objects lighting other objects where [TS]

01:07:17   they weren't together in the other ones [TS]

01:07:20   so they didn't and then some things that [TS]

01:07:23   couldn't get a sense of where the the [TS]

01:07:25   the ship was on the screen or whatever [TS]

01:07:27   just little subtle things but you know [TS]

01:07:31   more kind of watching bullying and it's [TS]

01:07:33   clear what's happening and then they fix [TS]

01:07:35   some weird stuff like Sulu had a like in [TS]

01:07:38   court maneuver he's got a countdown that [TS]

01:07:40   didn't make any sense it was like the [TS]

01:07:41   members were wrong and they just [TS]

01:07:42   replaced it and now it makes sense and [TS]

01:07:45   it it works again so they did a great [TS]

01:07:47   job and even read the title select the [TS]
