00:00:24   is simple we are going to invent an [TS]

00:00:27   imaginary film festival featuring great [TS]

00:00:31   although many of them will be given who [TS]

00:00:33   is here each day of our imaginary film [TS]

00:00:36   festival will be hosted by one of the [TS]

00:00:38   members of the incomparable panel and [TS]

00:00:41   for that day they will be there to [TS]

00:00:42   introduce all five of the movies they [TS]

00:00:44   selected explain why they selected them [TS]

00:00:46   at we don't want to have duplication in [TS]

00:00:48   our film festival so once somebody takes [TS]

00:00:50   a movie during this election meeting it [TS]

00:00:52   will be taken off the board and [TS]

00:00:54   unavailable for everyone else which adds [TS]

00:00:57   a little competition to the proceedings [TS]

00:00:58   i am your host and a host of the [TS]

00:01:01   uncomfortable imaginary film festival [TS]

00:01:09   I'm going to introduce them all in the [TS]

00:01:11   order of the random draft selection that [TS]

00:01:29   working in your favor in entropy favors [TS]

00:01:31   me yes yes you you also speak randomness [TS]

00:01:34   sometimes so that fits 42 I actually [TS]

00:01:40   enough of making second will be Scott [TS]

00:01:43   McNulty I Scott hello I'm happy to be [TS]

00:02:06   right that's what I fourth pic on our [TS]

00:02:09   movie draft will be John siracusa hi [TS]

00:02:11   John [TS]

00:02:19   exciting podcast it is i can hear the [TS]

00:02:22   excitement in your voice too [TS]

00:02:24   it's making me excited with the fifth [TS]

00:02:27   pick in the in the draft will be dan [TS]

00:02:29   more'n hi dan we just like the Geordi [TS]

00:02:32   LaForge spot because that'd be pretty [TS]

00:02:33   awesome i would take that I've run out [TS]

00:02:36   of yes yes I'm sure that is the Geordi [TS]

00:02:38   LaForge right in the middle I'm right in [TS]

00:02:39   the middle just what i want to begin [TS]

00:02:40   with the sixth pick in the draft the [TS]

00:02:43   deanna troi spud sorry its serenity cold [TS]

00:02:47   haha i don't know how i feel about that [TS]

00:02:50   you could be dr. crusher she could be [TS]

00:02:52   wil wheaton yeah i-i-i struggle between [TS]

00:02:55   young wil wheaton and don't forget wharf [TS]

00:02:58   for Scotty in there somewhere there is [TS]

00:02:59   no honor in picking last anyway hello [TS]

00:03:05   and as um as the host I will go last [TS]

00:03:08   because it is my lot to clean up after [TS]

00:03:11   everybody on my so i will click i will [TS]

00:03:13   pick last [TS]

00:03:14   I so anyway the idea is we're creating a [TS]

00:03:17   virtual film festival I've asked [TS]

00:03:18   everybody to pick to make a list of [TS]

00:03:21   their favorite films it has to be more [TS]

00:03:22   than five because some of the films will [TS]

00:03:24   probably be sniped by their uh their [TS]

00:03:26   favorite or their fellow panelists now [TS]

00:03:29   who i have a1 reef rule before we begin [TS]

00:03:32   which is uh I want to clarify something [TS]

00:03:36   that came up earlier what makes a movie [TS]

00:03:38   I've decided I will make all all [TS]

00:03:40   judgments or me the question the [TS]

00:03:43   question came up what what what [TS]

00:03:44   comprises a movie with Star Wars be [TS]

00:03:46   considered one movie and answers no with [TS]

00:03:49   the Harry Potter movies be one moving no [TS]

00:03:50   that would be cheating and I won't allow [TS]

00:03:52   it with Lord of the Rings be considered [TS]

00:03:54   one movie i'm going to say yes if it's a [TS]

00:03:56   movie that really is one story it's [TS]

00:03:57   adapted from a single thing it's got the [TS]

00:04:00   same cast and it and it really sort of [TS]

00:04:02   shot together we'll call that one movie [TS]

00:04:03   but in the future and the future doesn't [TS]

00:04:06   count because it was a single the first [TS]

00:04:08   one is a sink two and three or after [TS]

00:04:09   three were shot yeah well if you want to [TS]

00:04:11   pick back to the future three [TS]

00:04:13   you got I may allow you have to have [TS]

00:04:17   asked for a judge's ruling [TS]

00:04:18   i'm also before we get started I'm going [TS]

00:04:20   to throw out some names of the movies [TS]

00:04:24   that our listeners suggested would be [TS]

00:04:26   their pics so some some just a little [TS]

00:04:29   foreshadowing of movies that we may [TS]

00:04:31   mention and others that we won't mr. [TS]

00:04:33   lorry said Star Wars The Empire Strikes [TS]

00:04:35   Back Lord of the Rings The Princess [TS]

00:04:37   Bride not big surprises there and [TS]

00:04:39   edition australian movie i believe [TS]

00:04:41   listener dan said blade runner Butch [TS]

00:04:44   Cassidy and the Sundance Kid the shining [TS]

00:04:46   empire strikes back in the princess [TS]

00:04:48   bride those might go in the first round [TS]

00:04:50   let's see what else mr. David wonder [TS]

00:04:53   boys out of sight [TS]

00:04:54   bakit the wrath of khan it's there's a [TS]

00:04:57   little contrast and the thin man [TS]

00:05:00   interesting bladerunner other alien the [TS]

00:05:04   Buddy Holly story those from irving [TS]

00:05:05   Dennis said real genius real genius real [TS]

00:05:08   genius real genius and real genius sorry [TS]

00:05:11   Irving are sorry Dennis you can't pick [TS]

00:05:13   moving more than once sycophant [TS]

00:05:16   yeah it's really really sucking up uh [TS]

00:05:18   Wally the dark knight jaws came from [TS]

00:05:21   listener John who is not john siracusa [TS]

00:05:23   lots of empire strikes back [TS]

00:05:25   raise the Lost Ark and miss Caldwell [TS]

00:05:26   will be happy to know somebody suggested [TS]

00:05:28   serenity [TS]

00:05:29   yeah anyway so so she seems pleased [TS]

00:05:34   despite it's time it's time now or the [TS]

00:05:38   for us to fill out the slots for our [TS]

00:05:40   imaginary film festival that we're going [TS]

00:05:41   to not do because it's not real if [TS]

00:05:44   somebody who's right wants to run a film [TS]

00:05:46   festival would like to comment [TS]

00:05:47   contact us please use this material I i [TS]

00:05:51   suggest that you listen to the rest of [TS]

00:05:53   this podcast and then rethink things [TS]

00:05:55   already invoked Robert Redford foot he [TS]

00:05:57   might give us a call [TS]

00:05:58   it's possible now and yes I so with the [TS]

00:06:03   first pick in the incomparable film [TS]

00:06:06   draft i am going to turn it over to glen [TS]

00:06:08   fleischmann to make his pick and explain [TS]

00:06:10   a little bit about why why why Glenn to [TS]

00:06:13   your God why my favorite movie of all [TS]

00:06:19   time [TS]

00:06:19   my first pick wings of desire don't buy [TS]

00:06:23   them vendors inventors has made a lot of [TS]

00:06:26   different kinds of [TS]

00:06:26   films all of a certain type so they're [TS]

00:06:29   all different kinds all the same time [TS]

00:06:30   and then people have a lot of strong [TS]

00:06:33   feeling better because sometimes his [TS]

00:06:34   films do not hang together that well and [TS]

00:06:36   they seem like a lot of nonsense I've [TS]

00:06:39   heard that quite a bit and I'm not a big [TS]

00:06:41   fan of a lot of his other films and [TS]

00:06:43   wings of desire suicide explain the plot [TS]

00:06:45   in brief [TS]

00:06:45   yes idea well so we desire it's about [TS]

00:06:48   angels in Berlin and it sounds [TS]

00:06:51   incredibly trait of course because it's [TS]

00:06:53   angels Angela tray but it's presented in [TS]

00:06:55   the most it's the most beautifully shot [TS]

00:06:58   paying it's the most sensitive thing [TS]

00:06:59   there are times when there's so little [TS]

00:07:01   dialogue in it the conceit is that there [TS]

00:07:05   are two angels that are one of them [TS]

00:07:07   played first by the superb Brannigan's [TS]

00:07:09   just the door and I and others [TS]

00:07:12   autoresponder that's what's worse known [TS]

00:07:15   in this country than in Germany and the [TS]

00:07:18   two of them are angels and they're [TS]

00:07:19   talking to each other they're angels all [TS]

00:07:20   over and people can't see them but the [TS]

00:07:22   angels can provide some influence [TS]

00:07:24   people's lives but it's presented like [TS]

00:07:25   the gentlest way that encouragement [TS]

00:07:27   confusion there to sort of witness and [TS]

00:07:30   observe and not really get completely [TS]

00:07:31   involved [TS]

00:07:32   Peter Falk isn't it in a bizarre will [TS]

00:07:35   roll in which he seems the oldest see [TS]

00:07:38   and talk to the Angels a bit sort of [TS]

00:07:40   confusing and it's kind of a love story [TS]

00:07:43   to the angel falls in love with a human [TS]

00:07:44   this circus performer trapeze are [TS]

00:07:47   displayed by selvakumar khan who is a [TS]

00:07:49   and C really beautiful woman and it's I [TS]

00:07:54   don't know there's something about the [TS]

00:07:55   movie it's so quiet and gentle and [TS]

00:07:57   beautiful and it's just I think I saw it [TS]

00:08:01   I thought when I was young when after [TS]

00:08:03   came out and was sort of struck down by [TS]

00:08:04   I've seen it many times since and I you [TS]

00:08:08   know you have to bind the conceit I [TS]

00:08:09   think some people might find it very [TS]

00:08:10   very trite but they just they follow [TS]

00:08:13   different peoples very uh it's almost [TS]

00:08:15   picturesque in its ways that the stories [TS]

00:08:17   interlock and you see this old man who [TS]

00:08:19   is a poet and you hear him the angels [TS]

00:08:21   can hear people's thoughts and you hear [TS]

00:08:23   him reciting his promise the skin flower [TS]

00:08:26   through the whole thing is talking about [TS]

00:08:27   childhood and nature and just a lovely [TS]

00:08:31   film lovely for everybody who had that [TS]

00:08:33   the first pick in the draft with the [TS]

00:08:35   German you win the new enterprise if [TS]

00:08:40   this movie [TS]

00:08:40   sounds familiar we should say that this [TS]

00:08:42   was remade by Hollywood as city of [TS]

00:08:45   anything I was going to make a snarky [TS]

00:08:47   comment about how I liked it better when [TS]

00:08:48   they remade it with Nicholas case and [TS]

00:08:50   make a right on that day and that's [TS]

00:08:51   actually true [TS]

00:08:52   yeah it's one of the many facets of [TS]

00:08:54   films Nicolas Cage has been in it and [TS]

00:08:56   it's this year this year so say yes city [TS]

00:08:58   of angels now it's interesting there's [TS]

00:09:00   also a sequel vendors made a sequel to [TS]

00:09:02   wing design now come on now use in [TS]

00:09:03   German but you don't need Scott [TS]

00:09:05   subtitles [TS]

00:09:05   there's not a lot of dialogue that's [TS]

00:09:07   necessary to understand the movie this [TS]

00:09:09   sequel however are always loose which is [TS]

00:09:12   always so close you two songs so far [TS]

00:09:14   faraway so close it's just a terrible [TS]

00:09:16   terrible film it's it's it's [TS]

00:09:20   unbelievable that has anything to do [TS]

00:09:21   with the original incredibly try there's [TS]

00:09:23   some weird plot with like mafia and [TS]

00:09:25   things being blown up and children [TS]

00:09:26   kidnapped and people falling out of [TS]

00:09:28   buildings and it's got you know a great [TS]

00:09:31   great guests try again Peter Falk [TS]

00:09:33   playing a more significant role in it so [TS]

00:09:35   hard to believe it has anything to do [TS]

00:09:37   with this and city of angels that has [TS]

00:09:38   some good parts to it i like little bits [TS]

00:09:40   of it but I'm it's nicholas cage so you [TS]

00:09:42   gotta go back to the original witches [TS]

00:09:44   wings of desire desire all right I think [TS]

00:09:47   that's good at it that is as crazy as it [TS]

00:09:50   sounds that is a that is a beloved movie [TS]

00:09:52   so that's excellent good pic coming out [TS]

00:09:54   of left field [TS]

00:09:55   sounds terrible you when you describe [TS]

00:09:57   the plot it sounds terrible it's funny [TS]

00:09:58   yeah that's what you hear in german it's [TS]

00:10:00   because this I'll stuck in table [TS]

00:10:02   everything is beautiful in German [TS]

00:10:04   language of love it is Scott McNulty [TS]

00:10:08   you're up for my first pick [TS]

00:10:10   I'm going to pick star trek 2009 exactly [TS]

00:10:16   i think that's my favorite movie it is [TS]

00:10:20   my favorite star trek movie and I knew [TS]

00:10:22   it might go so i had to pick it as soon [TS]

00:10:25   as possible so i would pick it up [TS]

00:10:28   so exactly I i pondered picking real [TS]

00:10:31   genius but I thought that would be mean [TS]

00:10:32   since I don't actually like real changes [TS]

00:10:34   behind you have to stand up on your day [TS]

00:10:37   of our film festival and introduce it [TS]

00:10:40   which would be terrible it would be [TS]

00:10:41   terrible because everything I saw half [TS]

00:10:43   of it once and there's some popcorn in [TS]

00:10:45   it [TS]

00:10:46   you can throw tomatoes at you if you did [TS]

00:10:48   thats a star trek to its true but it's [TS]

00:10:50   not affecting back to my actual choice [TS]

00:10:52   star trek to is possibly the best Star [TS]

00:10:55   Trek film ever made [TS]

00:10:57   there are many of them for those [TS]

00:10:59   unfamiliar with the plot do i need to [TS]

00:11:01   summarize the plot [TS]

00:11:02   I'm not sure it's called the wrath of [TS]

00:11:04   khan because a favorite villain played [TS]

00:11:07   by ricardo montalban from the original [TS]

00:11:09   series is called back into action in [TS]

00:11:12   this a cinematic masterpiece in which it [TS]

00:11:17   starts with check off on the US and [TS]

00:11:18   watch it doesn't it starts with AA one [TS]

00:11:22   of the many issues and there are so many [TS]

00:11:23   good things about this movie one of the [TS]

00:11:24   many things first at the beginning right [TS]

00:11:26   Christy how it it's true one of the good [TS]

00:11:28   things and ask so when star trek to came [TS]

00:11:31   out there was a rumor that Spock would [TS]

00:11:33   die in it and spoiler alert he does yes [TS]

00:11:36   lots of your time the film producers [TS]

00:11:40   thought it would they didn't want [TS]

00:11:41   everyone to be waiting the entire movie [TS]

00:11:43   for Spock to die so they created the [TS]

00:11:46   first scene in the movie I which takes [TS]

00:11:48   place in a simulator and christianity's [TS]

00:11:50   character is going through this this [TS]

00:11:52   test that all Starfleet ah officers have [TS]

00:11:55   to go through when they're in the [TS]

00:11:56   Academy is a scenario called the [TS]

00:11:59   Kobayashi Maru where you are the captain [TS]

00:12:01   of a simulated Starfleet starship and [TS]

00:12:04   you are faced with an unwinnable task of [TS]

00:12:07   rescuing people off of this traitor ship [TS]

00:12:09   that is deep in the neutral zone and [TS]

00:12:11   there are Klingons coming in you know [TS]

00:12:13   you can't win [TS]

00:12:14   that's the whole point of it and so you [TS]

00:12:16   don't know that says you're watching it [TS]

00:12:17   for the first time and if you've never [TS]

00:12:19   seen it i have completely ruin the [TS]

00:12:20   dramatic the drama for you but so [TS]

00:12:23   there's a bunch of similar things and [TS]

00:12:25   spark dies in the simulation as everyone [TS]

00:12:28   else and then you think oh my god sparks [TS]

00:12:30   dead and then you find out Cup captain [TS]

00:12:34   kirk comes in is like a look as a [TS]

00:12:35   simulation-based it [TS]

00:12:37   I'm site summarizing exactly and then I [TS]

00:12:40   just like that Kirk it's true and this [TS]

00:12:43   Kobayashi Maru enters star trek lower [TS]

00:12:46   because I Kirk is the only person who's [TS]

00:12:49   ever defeated the Kobayashi Maru and he [TS]

00:12:50   did it by course cheating [TS]

00:12:52   that is one of the men i can just go on [TS]

00:12:54   and harmonica bonacic on is a fantastic [TS]

00:12:57   villain exactly and you [TS]

00:12:59   another trivia fact William Shatner [TS]

00:13:02   Ricardo Montalban though they are leads [TS]

00:13:05   in the movie and they play opposite each [TS]

00:13:07   other they never actually met during the [TS]

00:13:09   filming [TS]

00:13:10   they never have a scene together and yet [TS]

00:13:12   the relationship between the two you can [TS]

00:13:14   feel the hate when they have seen the [TS]

00:13:15   tune of seams together but they're on [TS]

00:13:17   View screens and things so very actually [TS]

00:13:19   never physically present together never [TS]

00:13:21   physically present that is true [TS]

00:13:23   through the magic of a 23rd century [TS]

00:13:25   whatever [TS]

00:13:26   yeah remember technology job technology [TS]

00:13:29   there you go [TS]

00:13:31   so that's that in fact my favorably and [TS]

00:13:34   when I found out that the they released [TS]

00:13:37   the star trek movies on blu-ray and so i [TS]

00:13:39   bought the blu-ray collection and i [TS]

00:13:41   realized i do not have a blu-ray player [TS]

00:13:42   so that i bought a blu ray player so [TS]

00:13:45   that I could watch star trek to huh [TS]

00:13:47   thats i have that blu-ray to that's a [TS]

00:13:50   great pic that was on my list that was [TS]

00:13:52   high on my list got I win you win the [TS]

00:13:55   random number generator gives that is [TS]

00:13:58   that movie you one of my favorite quotes [TS]

00:14:01   is that you check off goes and he finds [TS]

00:14:03   that the body bay and he meets calm and [TS]

00:14:06   he's like this today we look we left you [TS]

00:14:07   on City al5 that he says this is such a [TS]

00:14:10   five bedroom anyway I'm done [TS]

00:14:13   yes his checkup also says doesn't have [TS]

00:14:15   to be completely life loss but he says [TS]

00:14:19   lifelessly Steve you can't pick star [TS]

00:14:21   trek to your wings of desire but [TS]

00:14:23   otherwise the borders open of all film [TS]

00:14:24   history and and you can choose anything [TS]

00:14:28   else [TS]

00:14:29   so what do you too Steve so I I suspect [TS]

00:14:33   I'm fortunate in that based on past pod [TS]

00:14:35   guess I doubt that my list intersects [TS]

00:14:38   too much with the others on this podcast [TS]

00:14:40   or picking the he-man movie aren't you [TS]

00:14:42   what does the movie yes 45 p man a man [TS]

00:14:45   he man yeah he master universe from [TS]

00:14:47   Mario's other movies and he-man yeah [TS]

00:14:49   there was a movie masters of the [TS]

00:14:51   universe indeed there was no hot bread [TS]

00:14:53   and with more so like that we make with [TS]

00:14:57   Steve's day of the film festival I'm [TS]

00:14:59   like I'm like the monday after everybody [TS]

00:15:01   else is built the hangover besides the [TS]

00:15:03   bedroom closet somewhere with two or [TS]

00:15:06   three folding chairs right the be [TS]

00:15:07   strapped Bob on third straight you can [TS]

00:15:10   go to be theater and two speeds [TS]

00:15:12   but there are a couple on my list that I [TS]

00:15:14   thought perhaps somebody else might have [TS]

00:15:17   picked so I'm gonna this is not my [TS]

00:15:18   favorite strategy it is good yes i love [TS]

00:15:21   the draft strategy yes you know i'm all [TS]

00:15:22   about strategy man i know you want to [TS]

00:15:24   win so my first pick is ridley scott's [TS]

00:15:29   1979 or sci-fi hybrid alien which is a [TS]

00:15:36   terrific film for a lot of reasons and [TS]

00:15:40   the the basic plot is there's a crew of [TS]

00:15:43   what are basically glorified tow truck [TS]

00:15:45   drivers [TS]

00:15:46   I'm pulling a whole bunch of or in a [TS]

00:15:51   gigantic spaceship and they're on their [TS]

00:15:55   way back to earth from whatever mission [TS]

00:15:57   they were on and they're woken up early [TS]

00:16:00   from their cryo sleep and told to go [TS]

00:16:01   investigate a distress signal coming [TS]

00:16:03   from some remote planet and it turns out [TS]

00:16:07   not to have been a distress signal but a [TS]

00:16:09   warning and they run across an alien [TS]

00:16:12   life-form that precedes to then dispatch [TS]

00:16:15   them in a variety of entertaining and [TS]

00:16:17   plenty ways but it's great film for a [TS]

00:16:22   lot of reasons it's it's you get your [TS]

00:16:24   groundbreaking sci-fi for groundbreaking [TS]

00:16:26   for the time and this was nineteen [TS]

00:16:27   seventy-nine just two years after Star [TS]

00:16:30   Wars and his take on life in the in the [TS]

00:16:34   vacuum of space couldn't be more [TS]

00:16:35   different fact I think well what's [TS]

00:16:39   similar about it is they're both they're [TS]

00:16:40   both kind of scuff scuffed up and dirty [TS]

00:16:43   and messy right well i would say that [TS]

00:16:46   the star wars isn't anywhere near as [TS]

00:16:47   scuffed up and dirty as alien in fact [TS]

00:16:50   now this just in general their policy [TS]

00:16:52   direction the Millennium Falcon steering [TS]

00:16:55   wheel and there's a little drinking [TS]

00:16:58   roosters on the table in alien too so [TS]

00:17:01   you know maybe there's the intersection [TS]

00:17:03   but it's you know it's just kind of a [TS]

00:17:06   much darker tarea on on space then and [TS]

00:17:09   for obvious reasons because this is [TS]

00:17:10   basically a horror movie with sci-fi [TS]

00:17:12   elements [TS]

00:17:13   I you know that the corridors are ugly [TS]

00:17:15   and industrial and and not terribly [TS]

00:17:17   clean you know get a whole lot of the [TS]

00:17:19   sort of bright and shiny [TS]

00:17:21   you know princess Leia's ship kind of [TS]

00:17:23   corridors and instead of princesses and [TS]

00:17:27   you know vaguely girlie dude with [TS]

00:17:29   light-up sorts but we have basically a [TS]

00:17:33   handful of pissed-off blue-collar [TS]

00:17:35   schlubs who are you spend most of their [TS]

00:17:37   time bickering about bonus pay and I i [TS]

00:17:41   think part of the reason that I've never [TS]

00:17:42   been all that in a murder of star wars [TS]

00:17:44   with this this felt to me in 1979 more [TS]

00:17:47   like what space was really all about you [TS]

00:17:50   know not it's not happy swashbuckling [TS]

00:17:53   fun time but more drifting through great [TS]

00:17:56   expanses of nothing in a cramped in can [TS]

00:17:59   occasionally being set upon by some [TS]

00:18:01   insect avoid killing machine but at any [TS]

00:18:05   rate I tell ya that [TS]

00:18:06   yeah that's fun that's fun for the whole [TS]

00:18:09   family and in fact i did see this when I [TS]

00:18:11   was eight so you know well but at any [TS]

00:18:14   rate [TS]

00:18:15   yeah at the time the the scene everybody [TS]

00:18:17   was talking about and and the takeaway [TS]

00:18:19   from the movie was the classic spoiler [TS]

00:18:22   horn chestburster scene but that alone [TS]

00:18:26   obviously wouldn't granted at the [TS]

00:18:27   staying power that it's enjoyed uh [TS]

00:18:29   there's there's a lot to love about the [TS]

00:18:31   movie there's a great casting of a bunch [TS]

00:18:34   of really relative unknowns with the [TS]

00:18:36   sigourney weaver and her first role i [TS]

00:18:39   believe tom skerritt Yaphet Kotto Harry [TS]

00:18:43   Dean Stanton and Indian home is just [TS]

00:18:46   fabulous in this film he's unbelievably [TS]

00:18:49   good as the hidden android ash got a [TS]

00:18:53   terrific script from dan o'bannon which [TS]

00:18:56   does a great job of fleshing out the [TS]

00:18:57   characters so that you know by the time [TS]

00:19:00   that the first hour we're really not a [TS]

00:19:02   whole heck of a lot happens by the time [TS]

00:19:06   that our is done we really don't want to [TS]

00:19:07   see everybody died horribly but then [TS]

00:19:09   they do there's a very cool Jerry [TS]

00:19:11   Goldsmith score that kind of alternates [TS]

00:19:13   between this a very pretty sort of space [TS]

00:19:16   you know flying through space music and [TS]

00:19:19   then just very tense menace and then of [TS]

00:19:21   course the the great design by HR is a [TS]

00:19:25   cougar [TS]

00:19:27   I don't know I've never know how to [TS]

00:19:29   pronounce a tiger [TS]

00:19:31   it's got your she gave in to his I've [TS]

00:19:33   been to a museum [TS]

00:19:34   it's in greer in Switzerland the same [TS]

00:19:36   place they make the cheese must be [TS]

00:19:38   deletions his his designs of the [TS]

00:19:40   derelict spaceship and the aliens are [TS]

00:19:41   just fantastic and that the fact that [TS]

00:19:43   they realize that in the way that they [TS]

00:19:45   did is pretty pretty and pretty [TS]

00:19:47   impressive especially for 1979 so and of [TS]

00:19:50   course ridley scott's direction is very [TS]

00:19:52   very good to really kind of ramps up the [TS]

00:19:53   tension in a nice slow burn [TS]

00:19:56   I so I yea alright lot to love about [TS]

00:20:01   alien and not there's a chance that [TS]

00:20:03   maybe somebody else would pick it so [TS]

00:20:04   there is itself the board anybody have a [TS]

00:20:06   lien on the west [TS]

00:20:07   oh no dammit dammit my strategy was [TS]

00:20:12   always to pick no it's a good pic that's [TS]

00:20:15   a great pic I thought about alien and [TS]

00:20:16   free to pick masters of the universe [TS]

00:20:18   yeah you're gonna do it fast do it fast [TS]

00:20:21   but first John siracusa wings of desire [TS]

00:20:23   star trek to alien off the board i know [TS]

00:20:25   you had those so you're going to have to [TS]

00:20:27   just go to your backup pics then I so [TS]

00:20:29   sorry [TS]

00:20:30   the rest of the crew here but a draft [TS]

00:20:32   strategy prevails and I must pick even [TS]

00:20:34   though this is not my number one [TS]

00:20:35   all-time favorite movie and in fact all [TS]

00:20:38   these movies that I've selected or not [TS]

00:20:39   in any particular order because i have a [TS]

00:20:41   real hard time nailing down like number [TS]

00:20:43   one number two is just kind of soup near [TS]

00:20:45   the top but this is definitely in the [TS]

00:20:47   suit pants the clarifying power of the [TS]

00:20:49   draft format where your guests get some [TS]

00:20:51   other strategy involved and I am [TS]

00:20:53   compelled to pick the empire strikes [TS]

00:20:56   back [TS]

00:20:56   I hate you forever [TS]

00:20:59   that's impossible [TS]

00:21:03   do not want to see I don't feel that bad [TS]

00:21:05   about picking it because I that you know [TS]

00:21:07   what we all know the dan loves this [TS]

00:21:09   movie and its all-time favorite movie or [TS]

00:21:10   whatever and then ran loves the movie as [TS]

00:21:12   well but we had a three-hour two-part [TS]

00:21:14   podcast about the empire strikes back so [TS]

00:21:17   really it's not as if they they have [TS]

00:21:19   something inside them they need to get [TS]

00:21:22   out about Empire Strikes Back that [TS]

00:21:23   somehow now going to be bottled up [TS]

00:21:25   because I get to talk about it and they [TS]

00:21:26   don't you know I always have something [TS]

00:21:28   about the empire strikes back guys three [TS]

00:21:31   more hours easy i think that i sat in a [TS]

00:21:34   dark figure [TS]

00:21:35   darth vader figure when I was a kid so I [TS]

00:21:37   do too well i mean i actually have [TS]

00:21:41   trouble thinking of anything in [TS]

00:21:42   particular I want to add to the three [TS]

00:21:44   hours of stuff that we said if we were [TS]

00:21:46   to discuss it again [TS]

00:21:47   as an ensemble i'm sure we could [TS]

00:21:49   continue to talk about it but really [TS]

00:21:51   just you know wrapping it up i guess the [TS]

00:21:54   the larger comment i have on Empire is [TS]

00:21:56   that the reason i think it is so high [TS]

00:21:59   and all of our list has a lot to do with [TS]

00:22:02   the place Star Wars has in our life that [TS]

00:22:05   you know I'm not just this one [TS]

00:22:06   particular with all three movies [TS]

00:22:07   together and you know the age we are [TS]

00:22:09   when they came out or it is a lot of [TS]

00:22:13   emotional attachment to the idea of Star [TS]

00:22:15   Wars and as all thinking people agree [TS]

00:22:18   this is the best Star Wars movie and [TS]

00:22:20   likewise Star Wars is the best [TS]

00:22:22   space-faring science-fiction action [TS]

00:22:25   adventure franchise and all men t so [TS]

00:22:28   therefore this must clearly be the top [TS]

00:22:30   of the very top and really when I think [TS]

00:22:32   about the Star Wars movies i see Empire [TS]

00:22:35   poking its head up above kind of the sea [TS]

00:22:38   of not disposable entertainment but just [TS]

00:22:41   like entertainment for entertainment [TS]

00:22:43   sake and occasionally it pokes Ted up [TS]

00:22:45   through into that other part of the [TS]

00:22:47   other movies that i have on my list here [TS]

00:22:49   of like the serious dramatic film and [TS]

00:22:51   yes is that you know it's not a serious [TS]

00:22:52   dramatic forms got people with laser [TS]

00:22:54   swords and spaceships and cookies and [TS]

00:22:56   all that stuff but it has all the [TS]

00:22:57   elements that are playing up regular [TS]

00:23:00   oscar nominated Best Picture period [TS]

00:23:03   piece you know romance whatever all [TS]

00:23:07   these series jon was a movies that get [TS]

00:23:11   taken seriously in by critics and and by [TS]

00:23:13   the awards think the Empire has all [TS]

00:23:15   those pieces great script great acting [TS]

00:23:17   great dialogue that suspense gotta it's [TS]

00:23:19   got good action it's got a dramatic turn [TS]

00:23:22   of events you know i mean if you think [TS]

00:23:24   about the dramatic things that happened [TS]

00:23:26   the empire strikes back [TS]

00:23:27   you could put you know that the whole [TS]

00:23:29   thing I am your father you could put [TS]

00:23:30   that and then in the some sort of [TS]

00:23:32   historical drama and it would fit fine [TS]

00:23:34   to it just so happens that was right [TS]

00:23:36   after a lightsaber fight and the whole [TS]

00:23:38   video to business you see a lot of that [TS]

00:23:40   with the you see that the schlocky [TS]

00:23:42   version of that in the movies where [TS]

00:23:44   someone's training under some karate [TS]

00:23:46   master or whatever but you see that same [TS]

00:23:47   phenomenon in other movies like this [TS]

00:23:49   thing or whatever we're at the sting of [TS]

00:23:51   the color of monies are against my hip [TS]

00:23:53   hop on and stuff mixed up where you have [TS]

00:23:55   a young person training under an old [TS]

00:23:58   master all those elements are there and [TS]

00:24:00   I think [TS]

00:24:01   serious film people don't see them as [TS]

00:24:05   much because it's got wookies and c-3po [TS]

00:24:07   and r2d2 and stuff like that but i think [TS]

00:24:09   this movie clearly is head and shoulders [TS]

00:24:10   above all the other Star Wars movies [TS]

00:24:12   someone recognizes rubbing his temples [TS]

00:24:15   hand since the great disturbance true [TS]

00:24:17   it's true hehe threatened us on Twitter [TS]

00:24:20   and said whoever picks Empire before [TS]

00:24:22   Star Wars there but notice no one was [TS]

00:24:25   clamoring to pick flowers by the way [TS]

00:24:26   know before Empire came along they were [TS]

00:24:28   too busy picking their you know valken [TS]

00:24:30   movies yeah I was an alienation Empire [TS]

00:24:33   Strikes Back just really has it is way [TS]

00:24:34   ahead of the crowd other than the two [TS]

00:24:36   other sci-fi movies picked in front of [TS]

00:24:37   it including one from Star Trek so there [TS]

00:24:40   ya star trek wins [TS]

00:24:42   yeah again it is anyone by the way is [TS]

00:24:46   there anyone here who seriously thinks [TS]

00:24:47   that the wrath of khan is a better movie [TS]

00:24:49   in the Empire Strikes Back yummy i do ya [TS]

00:24:51   obese people are you are the entire [TS]

00:24:55   strikes back i like i love but the the [TS]

00:24:57   whole even Dagobah section is incredibly [TS]

00:25:00   hard at the heart of the movie mean I [TS]

00:25:02   think it is so boring I I you know it's [TS]

00:25:07   just not good it's good it's good that [TS]

00:25:09   Scott will have that for two for his day [TS]

00:25:11   and the John will have the empire [TS]

00:25:12   strikes back for his day and and they'll [TS]

00:25:15   be banned from each other's days and [TS]

00:25:17   cannot tackle from the back straight [TS]

00:25:19   I'm just saying if you compare you know [TS]

00:25:21   Yoda the puppet to you know Walter [TS]

00:25:23   colleagues Russian accent one of those [TS]

00:25:25   two is clearly more real than the other [TS]

00:25:28   yes yoda is a real puppet don't forget [TS]

00:25:30   about Ricardo Montalban chestplate think [TS]

00:25:32   there will be less bloody riot if we [TS]

00:25:34   separate those days by a couple of days [TS]

00:25:36   no one ever says Wetzel that's all I'm [TS]

00:25:37   saying that Yoda has been replaced with [TS]

00:25:39   a CG audio yet [TS]

00:25:41   yeah the cgi check off though we don't [TS]

00:25:43   hatch my films all right moving on and [TS]

00:25:47   thank you John for getting that out [TS]

00:25:49   there and and that leaves dan moore and [TS]

00:25:51   heartbroken because I'm sure that's what [TS]

00:25:53   he was going to pick I don't know you [TS]

00:25:55   will turn around and pick someone's [TS]

00:25:56   right i would that red and i'll of [TS]

00:25:58   course yes of course I well you can [TS]

00:26:00   probably guess what it is i actually [TS]

00:26:02   typed for John and now i have to type it [TS]

00:26:04   for you and still just paste it into my [TS]

00:26:05   little list from my clipboard because [TS]

00:26:07   it's gonna be raised the last dark right [TS]

00:26:10   indeed it is [TS]

00:26:11   oh yeah I have to play the draft game [TS]

00:26:13   kind of got ya like John here was gonna [TS]

00:26:15   beg like what as we had with John it's [TS]

00:26:17   probably not my top pick but it's [TS]

00:26:18   definitely in the top five and again as [TS]

00:26:22   with Empire without an entire extremely [TS]

00:26:24   lengthy podcast discussing all the [TS]

00:26:27   wonderful things about Raiders and and [TS]

00:26:30   well and then again it's very similar to [TS]

00:26:32   empire in many ways and not just because [TS]

00:26:33   you know there is some involvement of [TS]

00:26:35   what we like to call George Lucas's good [TS]

00:26:37   period but also you know it same part of [TS]

00:26:41   a franchise and it's definitely head and [TS]

00:26:43   shoulders above the other films in that [TS]

00:26:46   franchise though there are very [TS]

00:26:47   excellent redeeming moments to Temple of [TS]

00:26:50   Doom and last crusade which also you [TS]

00:26:53   know something i could consider picking [TS]

00:26:54   but if you know Raiders obviously [TS]

00:26:56   Trump's Last Crusade even and so I think [TS]

00:26:59   we've discussed at length what makes [TS]

00:27:01   this this film good and part of it for [TS]

00:27:02   me is just that as a vision [TS]

00:27:05   it's totally consistent it'sit's the [TS]

00:27:08   tone is even throughout for me it looks [TS]

00:27:11   perfectly seamless there's very little [TS]

00:27:13   that I look at it and say like yeah that [TS]

00:27:15   looks faker I don't buy that or [TS]

00:27:17   something like that there's there's just [TS]

00:27:19   a sort of unity of vision in this movie [TS]

00:27:22   that I really appreciate you never you [TS]

00:27:23   never sort of pop out of the filament [TS]

00:27:25   and and think oh I'm watching a film [TS]

00:27:28   you're just you're utterly engrossing [TS]

00:27:29   and it'sit's as such one of the finest [TS]

00:27:31   pieces of entertainment crafted on film [TS]

00:27:34   a friend of mine just watch this movie [TS]

00:27:35   with her kids first time her kids had [TS]

00:27:37   seen it and I and what what she was [TS]

00:27:41   commenting on which I really agree with [TS]

00:27:42   is it doesn't feel dated in a way that a [TS]

00:27:46   lot of movies from the early eighties [TS]

00:27:48   feel dated because right it is in this [TS]

00:27:50   class it's not too serious it's a period [TS]

00:27:52   film to write in its it said in the [TS]

00:27:54   outset in the thirties and so as such AI [TS]

00:27:58   Parkins much more back to the serials of [TS]

00:28:00   the thirties which of course was this [TS]

00:28:01   the the thing that Lucas and Spielberg [TS]

00:28:02   we're shooting for much as with Star [TS]

00:28:05   Wars it's funny idea i came to this [TS]

00:28:07   movie kind of late I actually saw last [TS]

00:28:09   crusade first and I thought Raiders on [TS]

00:28:11   the gas operators until I was in high [TS]

00:28:12   school and yet you know it quickly [TS]

00:28:15   became one of my favorites and so I [TS]

00:28:18   think there is it's hard to pin down [TS]

00:28:20   exactly what makes it so indelible in [TS]

00:28:23   that way [TS]

00:28:24   other than you know obviously everything [TS]

00:28:26   technical about it is superb from the [TS]

00:28:28   score to the you know cinematography [TS]

00:28:32   there's a great you know a great hero [TS]

00:28:36   I don't know and for me a lot of it [TS]

00:28:38   comes down to a great movie for me is [TS]

00:28:40   not just whether I sort of remember it [TS]

00:28:42   and think about it when I walk out of [TS]

00:28:43   the the film but I i'm such a sucker for [TS]

00:28:47   great dialogue and quotable lines and [TS]

00:28:50   that's one thing Raiders really has in [TS]

00:28:52   spades is just it's just full of great [TS]

00:28:55   lines and the other day actually i was [TS]

00:28:57   showing Jason a as part of a one minute [TS]

00:29:00   film conference contest for Empire [TS]

00:29:03   Magazine someone submitted raiders of [TS]

00:29:06   the lost ark done in the style of oj the [TS]

00:29:09   belgian artist studio who drew Tintin [TS]

00:29:12   and it's a brilliant little one minute [TS]

00:29:14   piece of animation that somehow manages [TS]

00:29:16   to do a wonderful job something up the [TS]

00:29:17   entire movie in just 60 seconds and yet [TS]

00:29:20   it's still dark and it's still remind [TS]

00:29:22   you of everything that you love about [TS]

00:29:24   that movie haha yep and then I said you [TS]

00:29:31   could warn them for new spoke hovitos [TS]

00:29:33   great grilled and this was number one on [TS]

00:29:36   my list so a good job [TS]

00:29:38   you stepped away from me and as I [TS]

00:29:40   expected check it off on my list even as [TS]

00:29:42   I had a cross out empire strikes back [TS]

00:29:45   alright you got raiders of the lost ark [TS]

00:29:46   maybe get Spielberg to come and talk a [TS]

00:29:48   little day of your little film festival [TS]

00:29:50   he's not really doing anything right i [TS]

00:29:51   mean he made three he made three Indiana [TS]

00:29:53   Jones movie and then retired that [TS]

00:29:55   summertime pretty much it [TS]

00:29:56   he is documenting the holocaust that [TS]

00:29:59   support more thanks trio its trees [TS]

00:30:02   documenting the Holocaust and making [TS]

00:30:03   movies where the Nazis are cartoon [TS]

00:30:05   villains it's a strange life [TS]

00:30:07   steven spielberg all right serenity [TS]

00:30:08   Caldwell Europe no Empire no Raiders go [TS]

00:30:12   ahead of paranoia raters surprisingly i [TS]

00:30:14   actually did not put those on my drown [TS]

00:30:17   you just do they're gonna go well [TS]

00:30:18   because i was pretty much convinced that [TS]

00:30:21   if dan didn't get Empire john wood and [TS]

00:30:23   then once I saw the draft order i was [TS]

00:30:24   sure that John was going to get Empire [TS]

00:30:26   and that left and with Raiders which [TS]

00:30:29   meant that if i wanted to nominate [TS]

00:30:31   anything i have to nominate one of the [TS]

00:30:32   other Star Wars movies or one of the [TS]

00:30:34   other Indiana Jones movies and neither [TS]

00:30:35   of those [TS]

00:30:36   neither of the other ones really fit my [TS]

00:30:38   top ten guys are so predictable eating [TS]

00:30:41   right now [TS]

00:30:42   yeah barycentric either Greg to leave it [TS]

00:30:44   all the image so instead i kind of i [TS]

00:30:50   went with the other movie that I watched [TS]

00:30:52   incessantly as a child which is Joe [TS]

00:30:55   Johnston's the rocket team [TS]

00:30:57   yeah yeah which I which I love dearly it [TS]

00:31:00   is it is the movie that when I am sick [TS]

00:31:02   or when I am just feeling down that I [TS]

00:31:04   just put on in the background and i've [TS]

00:31:06   i've watched it in whole and in parts [TS]

00:31:10   more times than I can count [TS]

00:31:12   it's set it's beautiful because it's [TS]

00:31:14   again it's a period piece done in the [TS]

00:31:16   style of 30 cereals it's fun [TS]

00:31:19   it has excellent which I know Jason also [TS]

00:31:23   jennifer connelly but you haven't [TS]

00:31:24   Connolly yes the-the-the a slight [TS]

00:31:27   enjoyable common slightly more than [TS]

00:31:29   someone's gonna have to admit I love my [TS]

00:31:31   Billy Campbell yes and there's something [TS]

00:31:33   for everyone isn't it up with enthusiasm [TS]

00:31:35   it's alan alan arkin enthusiasts yep [TS]

00:31:38   Dalton is always that German accent [TS]

00:31:42   busiest huh all there in the market [TS]

00:31:46   you're serious and and even people who [TS]

00:31:48   want their lost fixation can go back to [TS]

00:31:50   rock the rocketeer and get a little bit [TS]

00:31:52   of terry o'quinn recording so i mean as [TS]

00:31:54   Howard Hughes need a mustache use of the [TS]

00:31:57   mustache of all tell him how are you [TS]

00:31:58   said so anyway it's a it's a great film [TS]

00:32:01   it was complete under-represented when [TS]

00:32:03   it first came out which made me sad but [TS]

00:32:05   uh but it was that like it was one of [TS]

00:32:08   those films that I just I had the VCR [TS]

00:32:10   the VHS of and just wore the VHS down so [TS]

00:32:13   much that i believe we ended up copying [TS]

00:32:15   it to beta and then continue to watch on [TS]

00:32:17   beta it's and also it's in my hometown [TS]

00:32:20   of Los Angeles so there there are lots [TS]

00:32:24   of real landmarks and lots of fake [TS]

00:32:25   landmarks i don't know this is its it is [TS]

00:32:29   a movie near and dear to my heart and I [TS]

00:32:31   i'm having trouble talking about it [TS]

00:32:33   because it's it's just one of those [TS]

00:32:35   things that's there that makes sense [TS]

00:32:38   it's always been there i particularly [TS]

00:32:40   like the destruction of the land part of [TS]

00:32:42   the authentic Hollywoodland signed yeah [TS]

00:32:44   nice touch [TS]

00:32:46   I like the initial test run where [TS]

00:32:48   they're sort of [TS]

00:32:49   gleefully hey sure it's a rocket tied to [TS]

00:32:53   a guy let's try it out [TS]

00:32:55   oh jeez I almost died and now there goes [TS]

00:32:57   the jetpack it's it's a nice it's nice [TS]

00:32:59   more like they're not very bright are [TS]

00:33:01   they [TS]

00:33:01   and then they get what's coming to him [TS]

00:33:03   yeah i love the quote after that we like [TS]

00:33:04   yeah we were gonna need a lawyer is like [TS]

00:33:07   no we're going to need a helmet that [TS]

00:33:08   it's good stuff the rocket here and [TS]

00:33:12   that's over [TS]

00:33:13   alright it's my turn now as the as the [TS]

00:33:17   host I have to last in the first round [TS]

00:33:18   and then we will go wrap right back [TS]

00:33:20   around to glen so I'm not gonna not [TS]

00:33:23   gonna make two pics i'm just going to [TS]

00:33:24   make one and looking at what's left [TS]

00:33:26   after my board has been decimated by the [TS]

00:33:29   pics earlier in this round i am going to [TS]

00:33:32   pick another movie we did an entire [TS]

00:33:33   podcast about the beloved Rob Reiner [TS]

00:33:37   film The Princess Bride [TS]

00:33:39   that is my selection one of my favorite [TS]

00:33:41   movies one of the most quotable movies [TS]

00:33:43   of all time [TS]

00:33:44   a delightful comedy that a that not only [TS]

00:33:47   having a great casting and it being so [TS]

00:33:50   quotable sending up the entire fairytale [TS]

00:33:54   genre while at the same time also [TS]

00:33:56   celebrating it i have i have more than [TS]

00:33:59   one rob reiner movie on my list i am [TS]

00:34:02   shocking shockingly but i'm at toward [TS]

00:34:05   the top at North haha yes north is right [TS]

00:34:09   there a few good men north yep I'm note [TS]

00:34:11   that the princess bride a classic I [TS]

00:34:13   can't believe it's still there [TS]

00:34:15   it was actually number two on my list of [TS]

00:34:17   potential pics so you know what can you [TS]

00:34:20   say that about me not picking the [TS]

00:34:23   princess bride would be inconceivable [TS]

00:34:25   without meat head would be such an [TS]

00:34:27   influence in your life who knew meathead [TS]

00:34:29   I know [TS]

00:34:30   alright princess princess bride anybody [TS]

00:34:32   is this is the silence just shocked and [TS]

00:34:35   in people being a palter you know [TS]

00:34:38   process where is on my ok but it's lower [TS]

00:34:40   down right API guys in the top like [TS]

00:34:43   10-15 I pulled I pulled around on that [TS]

00:34:45   didn't put it down folder and we get [TS]

00:34:47   snapped out who [TS]

00:34:48   yeah its use that to me making a tiny [TS]

00:34:50   little mistake [TS]

00:34:51   no that's that's doing good strategy so [TS]

00:34:54   i gotta the second movie to feature [TS]

00:34:56   Peter Falk yes Peter Farrakhan i'm not [TS]

00:35:00   going to be a Colombo podcasts just [TS]

00:35:02   collectible film festival also i'm [TS]

00:35:05   willing to wager if anyone like to take [TS]

00:35:06   my bet it will also be the last movie [TS]

00:35:08   which completes her fearful and I don't [TS]

00:35:10   have anything to do with our combo movie [TS]

00:35:13   not only delayed for TV movies where is [TS]

00:35:16   that Star Trek movie with peter falk as [TS]

00:35:17   a Klingon so besides that's really far [TS]

00:35:21   eight days [TS]

00:35:21   all right now that ends the first round [TS]

00:35:23   we had wings of desire structure to [TS]

00:35:25   alien Empire Strikes Back raiders of the [TS]

00:35:27   lost ark the rocket here and the [TS]

00:35:28   princess bride [TS]

00:35:29   what can I go to the score collection [TS]

00:35:31   that's right let's get this car is in [TS]

00:35:33   the lead with five points is Glenn [TS]

00:35:35   fleischmann he got the deal are [TS]

00:35:37   mysterious and rarely rarely used [TS]

00:35:40   foreign language film bones who [TS]

00:35:42   everybody else tied with one so when [TS]

00:35:44   what is your second selection [TS]

00:35:47   alright i pick up Blade Runner which I [TS]

00:35:50   suspect that many people online little [TS]

00:35:52   gun in the second film [TS]

00:35:54   yes so I mean I've seen I think every [TS]

00:35:56   version of Blade Runner and notions [TS]

00:35:58   every version is the one that's the [TS]

00:35:59   director's cut but i think really Scott [TS]

00:36:01   toured with that had some stuff restored [TS]

00:36:04   before they do the full directors cut [TS]

00:36:06   and so I've seen several I think I've [TS]

00:36:08   seen at least three or four different [TS]

00:36:09   versions of this movie and the last one [TS]

00:36:12   I saw was the fully restored car was [TS]

00:36:13   shown at the cinerama the restored [TS]

00:36:15   cinema theatre in seattle in it's just [TS]

00:36:17   it's a it was a good movie with the [TS]

00:36:20   voice-over it wasn't great [TS]

00:36:21   there are lots of laws lots of [TS]

00:36:23   difficulties as it got sort of brought [TS]

00:36:25   back closer and closer to the original [TS]

00:36:26   vision have to say the sort of ultimate [TS]

00:36:29   version that's out there is fantastic [TS]

00:36:31   without the voiceover it's a quiet film [TS]

00:36:33   it's creepy it's got all the new are [TS]

00:36:36   there and there's anticipation it's [TS]

00:36:38   harder to protect it seems more surreal [TS]

00:36:41   and strange and and the same time [TS]

00:36:43   possible so i'll say also a blade runner [TS]

00:36:46   but that particular version as I don't [TS]

00:36:48   think every version the movie holds up [TS]

00:36:50   as well as the one in which there is no [TS]

00:36:52   Harrison Ford telling us everything as [TS]

00:36:54   it happens I think that's the one that's [TS]

00:36:55   available for theatrical display at our [TS]

00:36:58   film festival to directors that cut [TS]

00:37:01   that's a good choice i figured that one [TS]

00:37:02   might go [TS]

00:37:03   my wife is not i tried to show that [TS]

00:37:05   movie two or three times just fall [TS]

00:37:06   asleep all three times [TS]

00:37:07   who else ya got it's all there was it's [TS]

00:37:10   a little sleep inducing even if its good [TS]

00:37:11   radio [TS]

00:37:13   oh well it's me yeah you can like where [TS]

00:37:17   you can sit in the back of the theater [TS]

00:37:18   and throw things and blend well he said [TS]

00:37:20   the book was better our supposed to go [TS]

00:37:23   purchase that's the correct adventure [TS]

00:37:26   game you know I think my problem with [TS]

00:37:29   blade runner's that I saw it for the [TS]

00:37:30   first time for a psychology class in [TS]

00:37:33   college boy computacion yeah that's [TS]

00:37:37   really the best way to see any movies [TS]

00:37:39   it's true [TS]

00:37:39   yes it was a it was a psychology class [TS]

00:37:41   on memory and ever since then I've just [TS]

00:37:44   been completely uninterested in what you [TS]

00:37:46   did remember it time to die [TS]

00:37:48   time travelers are immune to the charms [TS]

00:37:50   of blade runner it's a great atmosphere [TS]

00:37:52   film i just i find it impenetrable as an [TS]

00:37:54   area around breaking in its visuals and [TS]

00:37:57   sound track is really interesting the [TS]

00:37:58   Angelus soundtrack we have how many [TS]

00:38:00   people saw it without the narration that [TS]

00:38:03   without hurting for i started the only [TS]

00:38:05   version I've actually seen is the second [TS]

00:38:06   i guess the director's cut that doesn't [TS]

00:38:08   the first directors can I don't know I [TS]

00:38:09   know there's a lot of middle part one [TS]

00:38:12   that doesn't have it does not have a [TS]

00:38:13   voiceover yeah but it's not the final [TS]

00:38:15   cut the entry in wikipedia is ridiculous [TS]

00:38:18   for Blade Runner because it explains in [TS]

00:38:20   unbelievable detail as only wikipedia [TS]

00:38:22   can how many different kinds served in [TS]

00:38:24   but it's still that's a that's a [TS]

00:38:26   perfectly legitimate selection and [TS]

00:38:28   nobody will be you other than maybe Dan [TS]

00:38:30   yeah I've done all right excellent we'll [TS]

00:38:33   move on to scott who already has [TS]

00:38:35   slaughtered star trek to on his five [TS]

00:38:37   film festival day what's your second [TS]

00:38:40   selection Scott well the only way you [TS]

00:38:42   can follow up star trek to other than [TS]

00:38:44   star trek 3 which is that what i will [TS]

00:38:49   not do 6236 we got Scott space that's [TS]

00:38:51   right [TS]

00:38:52   you killed my son directory structure 3 [TS]

00:38:56   is with the Carr brothers really i love [TS]

00:38:59   the Coen brothers I i was just wondering [TS]

00:39:02   if we were going to get a coen brothers [TS]

00:39:04   with at least great i have one on my [TS]

00:39:07   list probably enough [TS]

00:39:08   you probably don't have this one but [TS]

00:39:09   maybe you do i love the movie that [TS]

00:39:12   nearly cost them their careers because [TS]

00:39:14   it performed so poorly the hudsucker [TS]

00:39:17   proxy you know for kids [TS]

00:39:20   exactly that's a good movie i adore that [TS]

00:39:24   film is too [TS]

00:39:25   fantastic movie it has bruce campbell [TS]

00:39:27   and for the people who like bruce [TS]

00:39:29   campbell it stars tim robbins as a [TS]

00:39:32   immediate basically who has an idea and [TS]

00:39:36   he wants to be big in business so he [TS]

00:39:38   goes to hudsucker industries a little [TS]

00:39:42   does he know that the the CEO and [TS]

00:39:44   chairman founder of hudsucker industries [TS]

00:39:46   a recently hurled himself out of the [TS]

00:39:50   window from during a board meeting and [TS]

00:39:53   dies from the 44th 45th counting the [TS]

00:39:57   mezzanine floor i add it's just it's [TS]

00:40:01   it's it's a screwball kind of movie that [TS]

00:40:04   is funny [TS]

00:40:05   it really is doesn't make much sense but [TS]

00:40:07   that's alright [TS]

00:40:08   it has a lot of great lines it has a lot [TS]

00:40:10   of interesting characters and apparently [TS]

00:40:12   nobody wanted to see it in the movie [TS]

00:40:14   theater shame it's a shame but also has [TS]

00:40:16   Paul Newman that's a good that's a great [TS]

00:40:20   movie yeah I will not I will not yell [TS]

00:40:22   leave it just hula-hoops who straws [TS]

00:40:25   ya know what's good that's being top 50 [TS]

00:40:28   alright we're going to my top 7500 was [TS]

00:40:32   going to say I actually forgot [TS]

00:40:35   completely about the Coen brothers [TS]

00:40:36   somehow while coming up with my I [TS]

00:40:39   thought about them I thought I like all [TS]

00:40:40   the movies and I'm not sure any of the [TS]

00:40:42   movies I like enough to put it in my top [TS]

00:40:44   20 but I like I would have started [TS]

00:40:46   raising arizona up there isn't [TS]

00:40:47   yeah when Cohen brothers it's in my top [TS]

00:40:49   10 alright well we'll get to that [TS]

00:40:51   perhaps maybe if it's not the hudsucker [TS]

00:40:53   proxy you're wrong haha [TS]

00:40:55   Steve once you have a and on the board [TS]

00:40:58   what is that yes having wasted that pic [TS]

00:41:01   i will proceed to waste my second pick [TS]

00:41:04   excellent uh it's anthony from no well [TS]

00:41:08   yeah well never mind about that was a [TS]

00:41:10   great picture was alright mom so I [TS]

00:41:13   picked this one is in fact my favorite [TS]

00:41:15   film I think comedy in general doesn't [TS]

00:41:18   get a fair shake when it comes to people [TS]

00:41:20   i commit with all-time best lists [TS]

00:41:24   yeah you see your american film [TS]

00:41:26   institute lists and and any other list [TS]

00:41:29   that you might come across about you [TS]

00:41:31   know the greatest films of all time you [TS]

00:41:32   almost never see a comedy that's been [TS]

00:41:33   made in the last half century i have 3 [TS]

00:41:36   m3 in my top 10 for what it's worth four [TS]

00:41:39   yeah we're in my top 10 yeah and it [TS]

00:41:40   seems wholly unfair considering that [TS]

00:41:42   it's generally accepted that comedy is [TS]

00:41:44   much much harder to pull off and then [TS]

00:41:46   drama that's said picking a comedy is [TS]

00:41:49   going to be really divisive I suspect [TS]

00:41:51   since humor so subjective but this is [TS]

00:41:55   actually the funniest movie ever made [TS]

00:41:57   objectively and that is a that is [TS]

00:41:59   Caddyshack wow oh yeah people do love [TS]

00:42:03   the caddyshack Caddyshack is fantastic [TS]

00:42:05   said features for the funniest comedians [TS]

00:42:08   of all time all with very different [TS]

00:42:10   styles and at the height of their powers [TS]

00:42:13   individually they're great but then see [TS]

00:42:15   you get to see them interact in various [TS]

00:42:17   groupings are throughout the course of [TS]

00:42:18   the film and it's just sheer joy I had [TS]

00:42:20   to pick a favorite i probably go with [TS]

00:42:22   the the incomparable Ted Knight who's [TS]

00:42:26   his his facial expressions throughout [TS]

00:42:28   the film is sort of slow burn just just [TS]

00:42:31   absolutely slaves me and he's fantastic [TS]

00:42:34   in that Eminem another eminently [TS]

00:42:39   quotable film maybe too much so you can [TS]

00:42:44   hardly avoid Caddyshack quotes if you're [TS]

00:42:46   around people that liked the film but it [TS]

00:42:48   is a great way to identify kindred [TS]

00:42:49   spirits if you know if you have to be at [TS]

00:42:51   a baseball game and an opposing [TS]

00:42:54   fielder's going out for an easy pop-up [TS]

00:42:56   and you shout out Noonan that the six [TS]

00:42:59   people who turn around and laugh because [TS]

00:43:01   of those are the guys you want to have a [TS]

00:43:02   beer with sake beer sent to them [TS]

00:43:05   immediately that point but yeah I mean [TS]

00:43:08   it's said that the thing that I love so [TS]

00:43:09   much about Caddyshack really most [TS]

00:43:11   importantly is is when I sit down and [TS]

00:43:12   watch a movie once in awhile i want [TS]

00:43:14   something that's kind of more [TS]

00:43:16   thought-provoking but most of the time [TS]

00:43:18   you know i just spent all day thinking I [TS]

00:43:20   just want to have some fun and this this [TS]

00:43:23   film is just pure fun [TS]

00:43:24   I mean there's a there is an overarching [TS]

00:43:26   plot line but it really barely intrude [TS]

00:43:28   into the film and then there's there's [TS]

00:43:30   just something i think really very [TS]

00:43:32   soothing about the country club is a [TS]

00:43:33   setting it gets kinda like being at [TS]

00:43:35   disneyland you know that the real world [TS]

00:43:37   can't intrude here and you know it's [TS]

00:43:40   just it just has this real nice vibe to [TS]

00:43:42   it and then the cast of course looks [TS]

00:43:43   like they're having a ball [TS]

00:43:45   i have read the book of Caddyshack which [TS]

00:43:47   suggests that in fact they were maybe [TS]

00:43:48   having a bit too much of a baja but but [TS]

00:43:52   it is a very definitely I think one of [TS]

00:43:54   the funniest movies of all time and it [TS]

00:43:57   is my favorite film it and like so many [TS]

00:44:00   great films you know it's it's something [TS]

00:44:02   that can be appreciated by kids of all [TS]

00:44:04   ages you know you fight for the youngins [TS]

00:44:06   you've got the the dancing gopher [TS]

00:44:08   yep and you know kids maybe a little bit [TS]

00:44:12   older I enjoy the the classic one of the [TS]

00:44:15   all-time greatest poop jokes the baby [TS]

00:44:17   ruth in the pool scene and then you know [TS]

00:44:20   teenagers and and stunted adults like me [TS]

00:44:22   uhhh let's see Cindy Morgan's boobs so [TS]

00:44:25   thumbs-up to Caddyshack comes up that's [TS]

00:44:28   right I've never actually seen [TS]

00:44:29   Caddyshack well you're gonna have to go [TS]

00:44:32   to steve's day of the film festival then [TS]

00:44:34   we will move on to John siracusa John [TS]

00:44:36   what's your next pick you have the [TS]

00:44:38   empire strikes back already in your back [TS]

00:44:39   pocket so you're you're living large you [TS]

00:44:41   could do anything now I'm thinking that [TS]

00:44:43   most of my pics are safe and so far [TS]

00:44:45   predicted correctly they're not known as [TS]

00:44:48   picking my stuff and not because they're [TS]

00:44:49   obscure but because you're all giant I [TS]

00:44:51   John's i suspect that you and I have [TS]

00:44:53   some pics and common on our Chelsea's my [TS]

00:44:56   second paper going to stop me but go [TS]

00:44:57   ahead is Francis Ford Coppola 1972 [TS]

00:45:00   masterpiece The Godfather that was on my [TS]

00:45:02   left I'm just saying yeah we add is that [TS]

00:45:05   that's not a surprising Pikmin great [TS]

00:45:07   film list i don't think so this is kind [TS]

00:45:10   of the genre-defining gangster movie and [TS]

00:45:14   a lot of times when you're having John [TS]

00:45:15   redefining movie as perhaps then can [TS]

00:45:18   attest it's looked upon with great [TS]

00:45:21   reverence because it influences all the [TS]

00:45:23   movies that came after it or two in [TS]

00:45:26   technology problems we want to talk [TS]

00:45:27   about you know how all of a sudden all [TS]

00:45:29   the laptop show the keyboard up towards [TS]

00:45:31   the screen and put a touchpad in front [TS]

00:45:33   of them are all of a sudden all the [TS]

00:45:34   phones were just a big giant screen [TS]

00:45:36   right and after blade runner all the [TS]

00:45:38   sci-fi movies were dark ingredients like [TS]

00:45:40   that but uh in the case of non apple [TS]

00:45:45   examples they will they will say that [TS]

00:45:47   you all right so not really about [TS]

00:45:49   examples [TS]

00:45:49   yeah that define know what they say like [TS]

00:45:51   you know played around to find the genre [TS]

00:45:53   but it wasn't that great of a movie and [TS]

00:45:54   you know it's always looked upon with [TS]

00:45:55   reference because it it changed the way [TS]

00:45:57   things were done that you know and so it [TS]

00:46:01   gets it gets extra boost for being like [TS]

00:46:03   the first one and like the one that [TS]

00:46:04   everyone else walks in its footsteps in [TS]

00:46:06   the case of the Godfather i'll argue [TS]

00:46:08   that not only was it the first John [TS]

00:46:10   redefining big Hollywood gangster movie [TS]

00:46:12   it remains the best which is very [TS]

00:46:15   strange were usually the first one has [TS]

00:46:17   some problems and kinda gives a theme [TS]

00:46:19   and then people sort of riff on that and [TS]

00:46:21   get better if you go back and watch the [TS]

00:46:23   godfather first it is a movie of its [TS]

00:46:26   time it looks like a movie shot in the [TS]

00:46:27   seventies [TS]

00:46:28   I you know I can close my eyes and see [TS]

00:46:29   the film grain I think that's true of a [TS]

00:46:32   lot of movies and seventies you think of [TS]

00:46:33   taxi driver or you know any of those [TS]

00:46:35   movies in that that era they look like [TS]

00:46:38   70 movies n and this also looks like a [TS]

00:46:40   70s movie but it's not you know it's set [TS]

00:46:41   in and as an earlier era I but it's [TS]

00:46:46   surprisingly modern in its sensibilities [TS]

00:46:50   you know what i mean and the [TS]

00:46:52   infrastructure of the movie it's got [TS]

00:46:55   it's got good bones kinda like when I [TS]

00:46:56   say house has good bones [TS]

00:46:57   this is a solid movie under there but it [TS]

00:46:59   laid on top of it is this sort of [TS]

00:47:01   deliberate seventies movie pacing like [TS]

00:47:05   this is a long movie I had to look up [TS]

00:47:07   how long it wasn't like what this must [TS]

00:47:08   be over to our think it's close to three [TS]

00:47:10   hours it's an extremely long movie the [TS]

00:47:11   type of movie where you can imagine they [TS]

00:47:12   put up a big title card says [TS]

00:47:14   intermission everyone gets up to stretch [TS]

00:47:15   their legs for a little bit it is you [TS]

00:47:17   know it defines an epic movie I that but [TS]

00:47:21   the Ark of the movie is just a solid [TS]

00:47:23   underneath there and they say we've got [TS]

00:47:25   a story to tell it has a beginning it [TS]

00:47:26   has middle has an end and we're going to [TS]

00:47:28   tell it and they just let it unfold and [TS]

00:47:31   you're just wrapped the entire time it [TS]

00:47:32   has some of the great individual scenes [TS]

00:47:34   of any movie ever [TS]

00:47:35   great actors the script is tight the the [TS]

00:47:40   parts in there that are special effects [TS]

00:47:42   mostly just blood and violence stuff [TS]

00:47:43   like that don't look okie even after all [TS]

00:47:45   these years for the CG and everything [TS]

00:47:47   maybe one or two punches that James Caan [TS]

00:47:50   fails to land on the street to hit it [TS]

00:47:52   one beating up his a his sister's [TS]

00:47:54   husband that's about the worst thing you [TS]

00:47:58   can say about this movie that I maybe [TS]

00:47:59   they would have you know we shot that [TS]

00:48:00   fixed it to make it look actually hit [TS]

00:48:02   him but other than that you know it is [TS]

00:48:04   beyond reproach and in fact I would say [TS]

00:48:06   all the gangster movies that have come [TS]

00:48:08   out of it after it with two possible [TS]

00:48:10   exceptions which you may hear about [TS]

00:48:11   later [TS]

00:48:12   uh [TS]

00:48:13   have failed to live up to the standards [TS]

00:48:15   set by the Codfather failed in many many [TS]

00:48:16   ways they they didn't recognize what was [TS]

00:48:19   important about the Godfather you see [TS]

00:48:20   lots of movies like it's kind of like [TS]

00:48:23   the and the chest / seen an alien that's [TS]

00:48:24   that's you know that the thing that we [TS]

00:48:26   remember in pop culture well you [TS]

00:48:27   remember the horse's head in the bed [TS]

00:48:28   from the Godfather that's not what this [TS]

00:48:31   movie was about and like if that's what [TS]

00:48:33   you came away with aegyo just that [TS]

00:48:34   horse's head in the bed did you see that [TS]

00:48:35   thing burst out of his chest [TS]

00:48:37   I was a chest burster is more important [TS]

00:48:38   daily and then the Horsehead was to the [TS]

00:48:40   God products not putting on Father's [TS]

00:48:41   about I think about i think about [TS]

00:48:44   Michael getting the the gun out of the [TS]

00:48:46   toilet and then dropping the gun and [TS]

00:48:48   walking away i mean that's that's the [TS]

00:48:50   scene that i always think of when I [TS]

00:48:51   think the Godfather with a broken jaw [TS]

00:48:53   and he's just sitting there in the train [TS]

00:48:54   noise in the background getting a lot of [TS]

00:48:55   Yakima I could do a very long podcast [TS]

00:48:58   about the godfather and I may do that [TS]

00:48:59   yeah that would be good [TS]

00:49:00   and yet and yet when when you did a [TS]

00:49:03   podcast about a gangster movie wasn't [TS]

00:49:05   the Codfather which I find perhaps you [TS]

00:49:06   will be seeing that movie again perhaps [TS]

00:49:08   on someone's list [TS]

00:49:09   perhaps it's quite it's i know for a [TS]

00:49:12   fact it's on someone's list so we'll see [TS]

00:49:14   alright that's a great pic that is a [TS]

00:49:16   classic that is one of the all-time [TS]

00:49:17   greats the Godfather I will point out [TS]

00:49:19   the godfather part two is still [TS]

00:49:22   available if somebody else would like [TS]

00:49:24   that also part three is available i just [TS]

00:49:28   got if you're interested in everybody [TS]

00:49:30   right Dan Morgan yep your pictures Lost [TS]

00:49:33   Ark what's next [TS]

00:49:34   I did so my my second pic was actually [TS]

00:49:37   mentioned already by one of our [TS]

00:49:39   listeners I'm gonna pick the classic [TS]

00:49:42   George Roy hill 1969 film Butch Cassidy [TS]

00:49:45   and the Sundance Kid [TS]

00:49:46   whoo-hoo excellent movie that's just [TS]

00:49:50   weird being horrible reason how much I [TS]

00:49:52   like mobile movies i mean this this [TS]

00:49:54   movie opens with quotable lines you know [TS]

00:49:57   butch Cassidy's and what happened to the [TS]

00:49:59   old bank it was beautiful [TS]

00:50:00   the guy says people get robbing it says [TS]

00:50:03   small price to pay for beauty [TS]

00:50:05   the whole thing just from start to [TS]

00:50:07   finish it's kind of a lovely meandering [TS]

00:50:10   little tail and I was just looking at [TS]

00:50:11   the the synopsis on IMDb which i think [TS]

00:50:14   is a hilarious synopsis because it says [TS]

00:50:16   it's like two lines and it says that to [TS]

00:50:20   western bank / train robbers flee to [TS]

00:50:22   Bolivia when the law gets too close and [TS]

00:50:24   like I don't know if that's really [TS]

00:50:25   encapsulate the entire [TS]

00:50:26   i removed friend guess it's kind of a [TS]

00:50:28   plot but it takes a long time to get [TS]

00:50:30   there of some of my favorite scenes in [TS]

00:50:33   this movie I think one of the tops is [TS]

00:50:35   Butch and Sundance having been followed [TS]

00:50:38   over vast swaths of the open desert by [TS]

00:50:41   these mysterious guys who are these guys [TS]

00:50:43   find themselves in an attempt to lose [TS]

00:50:47   them find themselves on top of a cliff [TS]

00:50:48   above a river and they're arguing you [TS]

00:50:51   know about who should jump first and [TS]

00:50:52   finally sundance confesses I can't swim [TS]

00:50:55   and put just looks at amigos the fall [TS]

00:50:58   kill ya i don't know i love this movie [TS]

00:51:02   removing a bachelor it's a fantastic [TS]

00:51:03   movie and it's full of you know which [TS]

00:51:07   get a both Paul Newman and read for [TS]

00:51:08   Robert Redford are perfect in the role [TS]

00:51:10   as their chemistry is unparalleled [TS]

00:51:14   there's another great scene where yeah [TS]

00:51:16   they're robbing a train car and there's [TS]

00:51:19   a one of the best moments of comic [TS]

00:51:21   timing ever where Paul Newman just about [TS]

00:51:23   finished saying well that ought to do [TS]

00:51:25   and almost doesn't get the last word of [TS]

00:51:26   mouth before the entire train car just [TS]

00:51:29   explodes shreddy just sort of you know [TS]

00:51:33   dowsing them all entry in splinters of [TS]

00:51:36   wood and money falling everywhere and [TS]

00:51:38   Robert Redford just sorta looks amigos [TS]

00:51:40   think use enough dynamite there butch so [TS]

00:51:44   it's just I don't know it's as a series [TS]

00:51:46   of vignettes it's great from one to be [TS]

00:51:48   you know the beginning to the end and [TS]

00:51:50   the end especially which has this sort [TS]

00:51:53   of futility about it because you know if [TS]

00:51:55   you're any student of history you you [TS]

00:51:57   kind of know how it it ends which is to [TS]

00:51:58   say not well but it's still in some ways [TS]

00:52:01   kind of upbeat and i love the the last [TS]

00:52:04   sort of brief scene there which is just [TS]

00:52:06   a still photo of them running out to [TS]

00:52:09   face everybody [TS]

00:52:10   maybe people living our entire living [TS]

00:52:12   around have the entire book maybe [TS]

00:52:14   there's just a few of them out there is [TS]

00:52:16   just it's it's a great fitting end to [TS]

00:52:18   the movie and and i want to add one [TS]

00:52:20   little other scene which is a quiet [TS]

00:52:21   scene which I love is like it's like [TS]

00:52:23   like a third to a half way through the [TS]

00:52:25   movie when they're just sort of sitting [TS]

00:52:27   on a porch talking and you realize these [TS]

00:52:30   two guys have been hanging out together [TS]

00:52:31   for years and they don't know each [TS]

00:52:33   other's real names [TS]

00:52:35   and so they sort of oh yeah my name's [TS]

00:52:38   Parker and it's just it's a great it's a [TS]

00:52:41   great little moment when you realize [TS]

00:52:42   these guys are like like brothers [TS]

00:52:44   essentially and how much they really [TS]

00:52:47   know about each other but wonderful [TS]

00:52:49   movie great score great cinematography [TS]

00:52:53   and a great script by William Goldman [TS]

00:52:56   has already been thrown up there once [TS]

00:52:58   and for the princess bride [TS]

00:52:59   yeah tell me a little about yourself Dan [TS]

00:53:01   free pick against you got the Burt [TS]

00:53:08   Bacharach soundtrack to indeed [TS]

00:53:10   yeah you could add a bicycle what a [TS]

00:53:12   great bicycle so miss Caldwell your next [TS]

00:53:16   you have you got the rocketeer what's [TS]

00:53:18   next [TS]

00:53:18   okay well it's tough to choose which was [TS]

00:53:22   next but i think i will go with this one [TS]

00:53:24   my second pick which is actually number [TS]

00:53:27   six on my list is a silent film from [TS]

00:53:31   1927 and has been on for in the past has [TS]

00:53:37   been butchered several different ways [TS]

00:53:39   and they've added Queen soundtracks to [TS]

00:53:42   it [TS]

00:53:43   they've done all kinds of horrible [TS]

00:53:44   things to it but as of 2010 it is mostly [TS]

00:53:48   free complete and beautiful again and [TS]

00:53:51   that is fritz lang's metropolis [TS]

00:53:53   oh my goodness which is dumped you huh [TS]

00:53:56   it was another german film degree [TS]

00:53:58   there's another German felt in all [TS]

00:54:02   seriousness I i have little patience for [TS]

00:54:04   silent films in that my my friend [TS]

00:54:07   Elizabeth when I was in college was [TS]

00:54:09   studying silent films and while I love [TS]

00:54:11   Buster Keaton and you know max Linder [TS]

00:54:13   and that was fun to watch in general [TS]

00:54:15   should bring home these silent films and [TS]

00:54:16   they were just you know I'd watch 10 [TS]

00:54:18   minutes and just and want to go to sleep [TS]

00:54:20   because like dan I like what about [TS]

00:54:22   equitable dialogue I like fun fast-paced [TS]

00:54:24   things but metropolis is a you know as [TS]

00:54:28   originally shown was a hundred and fifty [TS]

00:54:30   three minute film and the recovered [TS]

00:54:33   footage in total puts it at about a [TS]

00:54:35   hundred and forty-five minute running [TS]

00:54:37   time so it is not a short silent film [TS]

00:54:39   and you'd think that it would you know [TS]

00:54:41   get bogged down or something like that [TS]

00:54:42   but it really doesn't it is a it is a [TS]

00:54:44   story of about the future and about [TS]

00:54:46   revolution and [TS]

00:54:48   robots so it has it has a really nice [TS]

00:54:50   sort of sci-fi bend to it it's it's been [TS]

00:54:54   accused of being a pseudo propaganda [TS]

00:54:56   film and it's very much you know worker [TS]

00:54:59   power and down with the man but it's the [TS]

00:55:03   way that it approaches it is a kind of [TS]

00:55:06   kind of the way that I really really [TS]

00:55:09   good film approaches religion in that [TS]

00:55:11   it's it puts it up on a sort of art [TS]

00:55:14   pedestal and and takes takes a step back [TS]

00:55:17   so instead of saying you know oh these [TS]

00:55:20   are the citizens of Germany or these are [TS]

00:55:22   the citizens of Russia it's you know [TS]

00:55:23   these are the citizens of this post [TS]

00:55:25   futuristic metropolis where all of the [TS]

00:55:28   workers live in high you know fanciful [TS]

00:55:31   skyscraper all of the the managers live [TS]

00:55:33   in High fanciful skyscrapers and all the [TS]

00:55:35   workers toil down below and their these [TS]

00:55:38   assets in this film are just incredible [TS]

00:55:41   i mean when you consider about how much [TS]

00:55:43   money they spent something like [TS]

00:55:45   5,000,000 rights marks which I think [TS]

00:55:48   about to ya in today's money it's [TS]

00:55:51   something like a hundred couple hundred [TS]

00:55:53   million dollars so they spent on par [TS]

00:55:55   with some of the big blockbusters like [TS]

00:55:57   the superhero blockbusters of the past [TS]

00:55:59   couple years and they have these big [TS]

00:56:02   beautifully hand-painted sets they have [TS]

00:56:06   this the right one of the wrote this [TS]

00:56:09   robot that stars very prominently in the [TS]

00:56:11   plot I and the special effects that go [TS]

00:56:15   along with the robot and what she what [TS]

00:56:17   she basically accomplishes and does to [TS]

00:56:20   the workers and humans around her [TS]

00:56:22   the special effects for this film [TS]

00:56:24   despite being in 1927 are absolutely [TS]

00:56:27   astonishing you watch it now and it's [TS]

00:56:29   you know [TS]

00:56:30   yes it's not it's not as fanciful as [TS]

00:56:33   some of the cgi but i'd argue that it's [TS]

00:56:35   just as impressive and that's there's [TS]

00:56:38   some there's some great scenes there's [TS]

00:56:41   again all this this is a very cinematic [TS]

00:56:44   movie obviously since it since it is [TS]

00:56:46   silent they really have to rely on [TS]

00:56:48   imagery and they do so very very [TS]

00:56:50   powerfully there's a the the person we [TS]

00:56:53   follow during this during this story is [TS]

00:56:57   the son of the head of Metropolis [TS]

00:56:59   Frederator who decides that he's going [TS]

00:57:02   to become after falling in love with the [TS]

00:57:03   girl of course he's going to become [TS]

00:57:05   noble and then go and help the workers [TS]

00:57:08   the plight of the workers and so in [TS]

00:57:10   order to really understand their [TS]

00:57:12   position and get into the shoes he [TS]

00:57:14   offers to trade places with one of the [TS]

00:57:16   workers for a day so he goes and he [TS]

00:57:19   basically spends a 12-hour day operating [TS]

00:57:21   this giant machine that keeps the city [TS]

00:57:24   running and you just get this picture of [TS]

00:57:26   him going up and operating these what [TS]

00:57:29   look like giant clock arms where he's [TS]

00:57:31   just turning them like taking his whole [TS]

00:57:33   entire body and turning these clock arms [TS]

00:57:35   two different positions in order to keep [TS]

00:57:37   the machine up and running [TS]

00:57:39   that's it's such a stark amazing like [TS]

00:57:42   the imagery is just is just fantastic [TS]

00:57:45   it's alloreactive that's a great pic [TS]

00:57:47   I've always loved that movie too that's [TS]

00:57:49   the film that Hitler and Goebbels I mean [TS]

00:57:52   I'm not trying to make its Phil [TS]

00:57:53   misinterpreted in in many ways by many [TS]

00:57:55   different kinds of people [TS]

00:57:56   Hitler and Goebbels like that film [TS]

00:57:58   somehow and is a story that fits long [TS]

00:58:00   was called into girls office and what [TS]

00:58:02   was going on and gobble said we love [TS]

00:58:04   when he came to power in people so we [TS]

00:58:05   love your film metropolis it was the [TS]

00:58:07   thing that inspired us we want to take [TS]

00:58:09   over filmmaking and Fritz long so I'll [TS]

00:58:10   have to think about it very hard [TS]

00:58:12   he walked out of the office got on the [TS]

00:58:13   train and left the country never came [TS]

00:58:15   back [TS]

00:58:15   yep and his his wife was a Nazi [TS]

00:58:18   sympathizer you apparently they get in [TS]

00:58:21   your career already get us leni [TS]

00:58:22   riefenstahl instead inspector and the [TS]

00:58:25   rest is ya know I think it's funny this [TS]

00:58:27   this film I am [TS]

00:58:29   ice-watch the first kind of this film [TS]

00:58:32   while the one I saw was I think about a [TS]

00:58:35   hundred and ten minutes back before they [TS]

00:58:37   had found they found missing footage in [TS]

00:58:39   a basically a can't in a canister and [TS]

00:58:41   someone's private library in 2009 and [TS]

00:58:44   then they decided that ok in a year we [TS]

00:58:46   are going to restore this 16-millimeter [TS]

00:58:48   footage because that the whole reason [TS]

00:58:51   why the film is kind of broken up and [TS]

00:58:53   dead in the first places that right [TS]

00:58:55   after it was originally shown in Britain [TS]

00:58:58   or in Germany when they tried to ship it [TS]

00:59:00   out to external countries and like here [TS]

00:59:02   lets you know we want we want to show [TS]

00:59:04   off this film the distributor's overseas [TS]

00:59:07   and movie houses basically said no one's [TS]

00:59:09   going to sit and watch a hundred and [TS]

00:59:10   fifty minutes silent film we're going to [TS]

00:59:12   cut the [TS]

00:59:13   thing down to 90 minutes also we're [TS]

00:59:15   going to show it and faster frames per [TS]

00:59:16   second because no one wants to sit there [TS]

00:59:18   for that one crazy son track yeah and [TS]

00:59:20   and yeah and let's add let's add all [TS]

00:59:22   kinds of different versions of live [TS]

00:59:24   music and it just got distorted so that [TS]

00:59:26   most of the copies that we have the of [TS]

00:59:28   the film in present-day are these awful [TS]

00:59:31   90-minute ones that were completely [TS]

00:59:32   recut so you couldn't even really get a [TS]

00:59:34   sense of the story it's just like okay [TS]

00:59:36   their businesses films cool images but [TS]

00:59:39   it went to the point where when I found [TS]

00:59:41   out through a friends that they had [TS]

00:59:43   found this footage and they were [TS]

00:59:44   basically working hard core to have it [TS]

00:59:47   restored for a premiere in Germany uh [TS]

00:59:50   art which is a over so European art [TS]

00:59:55   channel was broadcasting it live so I [TS]

00:59:58   actually in February [TS]

00:59:58   actually in February [TS]

01:00:00   right in 2010 i actually like hacked [TS]

01:00:01   into the feed so that I could watch the [TS]

01:00:03   live broadcast of this thing on like a [TS]

01:00:06   500-foot screen zoom in and enhance why [TS]

01:00:09   you hacked into the feed-forward one [TS]

01:00:11   character at a time [TS]

01:00:13   well I think I think it's a great i [TS]

01:00:16   think it's a great pic and who knew that [TS]

01:00:17   we were gonna have a silent film and [TS]

01:00:18   ended another german film in the flock [TS]

01:00:21   around what we do haha i promise that my [TS]

01:00:23   last german film i am up next and I I'd [TS]

01:00:30   it's tough because I got a lot of [TS]

01:00:32   different pics here I could go with some [TS]

01:00:33   obvious pics i'm going to go with [TS]

01:00:35   another comedy and I cannot believe this [TS]

01:00:38   but yes Steve I have so influenced by [TS]

01:00:40   meathead s that i'm going to pick [TS]

01:00:43   another Rob Reiner movie and video two [TS]

01:00:47   ways it is one of the funniest films [TS]

01:00:52   ever made the rockumentary mockumentary [TS]

01:00:55   this is spinal tap ok i originally I [TS]

01:01:02   believe there's a three [TS]

01:01:03   speaking of Metropolis there i think [TS]

01:01:05   there's like a three-and-a-half-hour cut [TS]

01:01:06   of this movie to that was that was made [TS]

01:01:09   and then they realized that nobody would [TS]

01:01:11   watch it and i think the final one is [TS]

01:01:13   about 90 minutes although depending on [TS]

01:01:15   which DVD you bought and i bought this i [TS]

01:01:17   bought this in the criterion DVD i [TS]

01:01:19   bought this on the cd-rom that they that [TS]

01:01:22   they put out with a movie on cd-rom that [TS]

01:01:24   was a brief thing I i have the MGM DVD [TS]

01:01:28   and I don't have a blu-ray yet because [TS]

01:01:29   it was shot in 16-millimeter and i'm not [TS]

01:01:31   quite sure what the point of the blu-ray [TS]

01:01:32   is because you know there's not that [TS]

01:01:34   much resolution 16-millimeter print but [TS]

01:01:36   inevitably will hide and blu-ray too [TS]

01:01:39   hilarious movie the crack chronicles the [TS]

01:01:42   lives of this this terrible heavy metal [TS]

01:01:46   band that is past its sell-by date and [TS]

01:01:49   is still kind of soldiering on as their [TS]

01:01:50   crowds the crowds that come see them [TS]

01:01:52   gets get smaller and smaller and they're [TS]

01:01:55   not very bright and they're kind of [TS]

01:01:57   breaking up and there's a girlfriend [TS]

01:01:59   who's sort of pushing that the guys who [TS]

01:02:01   were in the band apart and the drummer's [TS]

01:02:03   keep dying and have to be replaced with [TS]

01:02:05   other drummers and it is again it's [TS]

01:02:09   quotable and there's some famous lines [TS]

01:02:11   obviously like it it just goes to 11 [TS]

01:02:13   but they're there are so many funny [TS]

01:02:15   lines in this not just from christopher [TS]

01:02:17   guest and michael mckean and Harry [TS]

01:02:19   Shearer [TS]

01:02:20   but Paul Shaffer is in this movie who [TS]

01:02:23   else is in this Bruno Kirby is in this [TS]

01:02:26   movie and it's got some great scenes as [TS]

01:02:27   a limo driver Billy Crystal is in it [TS]

01:02:30   with dana carvey 41 seen as minds who [TS]

01:02:32   are also caterers [TS]

01:02:34   uh-huh just wash it for you have Paul [TS]

01:02:36   Shaffer Schaefer is is a party fuckin [TS]

01:02:40   the howard hesseman is a DJ the just [TS]

01:02:45   some great it's just a classic movie it [TS]

01:02:47   it people some people apparently [TS]

01:02:49   believed that it was actually real which [TS]

01:02:51   is impossible to think as you watch it [TS]

01:02:54   that it could be considered something [TS]

01:02:55   real because it's ridiculous and oh and [TS]

01:02:58   I should say Rob Reiner isn't it as the [TS]

01:03:00   as Marty Bergey v semi incompetent [TS]

01:03:03   documentary filmmaker who makes the [TS]

01:03:06   movie this is spinal tap [TS]

01:03:07   so he's the both the real director and [TS]

01:03:09   the fake director of this movie a [TS]

01:03:11   classic if you can find the criterion [TS]

01:03:13   DVD there's actually a commentary track [TS]

01:03:15   by the actors and the director talking [TS]

01:03:17   about the movie that's out of print now [TS]

01:03:19   the MGM DVD which is out there is an in [TS]

01:03:22   character commentary so they're actually [TS]

01:03:24   both pretty good and the criterion DVD [TS]

01:03:26   comes with about I gotta say 40 minutes [TS]

01:03:28   of cut footage from the actual movie [TS]

01:03:30   that includes some scenes that are [TS]

01:03:32   funnier than anything that's in the [TS]

01:03:33   movie believe it or not there's an [TS]

01:03:35   extended scene with Bruno Kirby where [TS]

01:03:37   Bruno Kirby the the band gets Bruno [TS]

01:03:40   Kirby high and then there's a quick cut [TS]

01:03:42   and Bruno Kirby is wearing his underwear [TS]

01:03:44   and dancing and singing Frank Sinatra [TS]

01:03:46   songs that is it i would argue funnier [TS]

01:03:48   than anything actually in the movie but [TS]

01:03:50   there are lots of reasons why they cut [TS]

01:03:52   it out [TS]

01:03:52   so this is spinal tap you know it let [TS]

01:03:57   the first mockumentary i think it is [TS]

01:03:59   essentially the first mockumentary and [TS]

01:04:01   led to christopher guest who is Nigel [TS]

01:04:04   want it on the band members in this he [TS]

01:04:07   ended up making a bunch of [TS]

01:04:08   mockumentaries like Best in Show down [TS]

01:04:10   the line but this was sort of the root [TS]

01:04:12   of that so you know this is spinal tap I [TS]

01:04:14   I i would consider this one of the two [TS]

01:04:17   or three funniest movies ever made and i [TS]

01:04:19   love it dearly and if you haven't seen [TS]

01:04:21   it [TS]

01:04:22   what is wrong with you you should see it [TS]

01:04:24   it's a great crazy movie [TS]

01:04:27   so this is spinal tap ago I got meat had [TS]

01:04:30   twice i'm going to invite rob reiner to [TS]

01:04:33   my day at our film festival he'll just [TS]

01:04:35   come and sit there in the I auditioned [TS]

01:04:37   for stand by me but that's not gonna [TS]

01:04:40   well who knows that you know I'm not [TS]

01:04:41   gonna make it a Rob Reiner day at that [TS]

01:04:43   time I'm done with my Rob Reiner pics i [TS]

01:04:46   know a late mother medicine but that [TS]

01:04:48   helped it [TS]

01:04:48   no no but I'm not surprised that people [TS]

01:04:51   related to you met famous people like [TS]

01:04:53   alright so this is content that's my pic [TS]

01:04:56   I promise not to pick any more movies by [TS]

01:04:58   meathead so many great movies like [TS]

01:05:01   Lawrence of Arabia have an intermission [TS]

01:05:03   and we are going to have an intermission [TS]

01:05:05   now because otherwise this podcast will [TS]

01:05:07   get even more out of hand and it already [TS]

01:05:09   is we're gonna split the podcast here [TS]

01:05:11   can everybody come back to do the other [TS]

01:05:14   part of the podcast that we already [TS]

01:05:15   recorded I can't make it i got a family [TS]

01:05:18   alright alright well alright i guess [TS]

01:05:20   possible [TS]

01:05:20   well see ya brother stick around and [TS]

01:05:25   next time we'll we'll find out who [TS]

01:05:26   returns to complete the uncomfortable [TS]

01:05:29   movie dekh draft until then let's go up [TS]

01:05:32   to the snack bar happen they have bacon [TS]

01:05:37   that's right please and no bacon please [TS]

01:05:39   so deserve ailable at the concession [TS]

01:05:41   stand fake in that's all go to the lobby [TS]

01:05:48   let's all go to the lobby let's all go [TS]

01:05:52   to the lobby to get i sell the treat [TS]
