00:00:24   december and so we're trying to be a [TS]

00:00:27   little seasonal that's why our topic [TS]

00:00:30   today is holiday movies that we love not [TS]

00:00:33   that we hate that we love [TS]

00:00:35   that's what John syracuse isn't here [TS]

00:00:37   because this is all about love not hate [TS]

00:00:39   a love it's the season for love it love [TS]

00:00:43   conquers all [TS]

00:00:45   everything is about happiness and [TS]

00:00:47   goodness and I'm sure none of us will [TS]

00:00:49   ever disagree with anybody else's [TS]

00:00:50   comments [TS]

00:00:51   okay that's probably at acting too [TS]

00:00:54   asking too much [TS]

00:00:55   I agree with you so to discuss the [TS]

00:00:58   holiday movies that we love [TS]

00:01:00   let's play debert to spread the love i [TS]

00:01:03   would like to introduce my guess my many [TS]

00:01:52   mixed household are you not do you do [TS]

00:01:55   not do Hanukkah and Christmas we're sort [TS]

00:01:57   of mix between atheism and something [TS]

00:02:00   else i don't know if this so as you're [TS]

00:02:01   celebrating the solstice and the [TS]

00:02:03   movement of the earth around the Sun as [TS]

00:02:04   as a friend of mine asked me in college [TS]

00:02:06   when she found out I was Jewish he said [TS]

00:02:07   you don't celebrate Christmas now I said [TS]

00:02:10   she said not even commercially and as [TS]

00:02:13   I've grown up I discover in fact that is [TS]

00:02:15   that we celebrated we celebrate [TS]

00:02:16   Christmas in a commercial spirit through [TS]

00:02:18   Christmas observed for our children for [TS]

00:02:21   purchase and then 22 visitors who have [TS]

00:02:26   been on the podcast before and I [TS]

00:02:27   back to celebrate with us first off damn [TS]

00:02:30   freaks hide and welcome [TS]

00:02:33   hi you know I really didn't think this [TS]

00:02:34   is the christmas movies that suck [TS]

00:02:36   episode [TS]

00:02:36   no no no I'm gonna kill prepared i'm [TS]

00:02:40   gonna have to hang up on you [TS]

00:02:42   one man season the wonders another man [TS]

00:02:44   suck thats that's what if that's what [TS]

00:02:46   makes you feel the love is I want to [TS]

00:02:49   terrible hope is that the episodes a [TS]

00:02:51   designated circulating yeah i'm playing [TS]

00:02:55   Little John series tonight [TS]

00:02:57   yikes where this is American League [TS]

00:02:59   rules so and also joining us is a man [TS]

00:03:03   who loves every Christmas movie and has [TS]

00:03:05   never said anything negative about any [TS]

00:03:07   christmas-themed movie ever in his life [TS]

00:03:10   mr. Andy anarcho hello every new year to [TS]

00:03:13   you in jail go on home Jason there [TS]

00:03:17   waiting for you how this is the greatest [TS]

00:03:21   podcast ever isn't it though [TS]

00:03:23   god bless us everyone happy birthday i [TS]

00:03:27   just made an angel [TS]

00:03:30   I want you to Pixies go to the door out [TS]

00:03:34   the window [TS]

00:03:35   it gave me i'm handing out winners don't [TS]

00:03:37   just only those who listen to copper [TS]

00:03:39   realize we have no format and i have no [TS]

00:03:41   organizational principle for any episode [TS]

00:03:43   this is no different [TS]

00:03:45   so what I'm going to do is go around the [TS]

00:03:49   the table the virtual table of our panel [TS]

00:03:52   and ask them to bring up a particular [TS]

00:03:56   movie that they would like to to just [TS]

00:03:59   slobber all over with adoration and love [TS]

00:04:02   for the colony goodness that it brings [TS]

00:04:04   to all of our lives or something like [TS]

00:04:06   that or at least their own life right [TS]

00:04:08   exactly right now we of course what will [TS]

00:04:10   happen is that the rest of us will sit [TS]

00:04:12   there and go [TS]

00:04:13   yes yes absolutely or mmm [TS]

00:04:16   and now maybe not and that's a then [TS]

00:04:19   you've got a podcast so let's begin with [TS]

00:04:22   Glenn fleischmann really i have a [TS]

00:04:26   modern-day classic exactly but it's a [TS]

00:04:28   lot of fun you know there's all the [TS]

00:04:30   classic films we do try out things like [TS]

00:04:32   holiday and so forth that we try to [TS]

00:04:35   watch over here just for fun but I like [TS]

00:04:37   elf will ferrell's elf and I was [TS]

00:04:41   discussing this with a couple people in [TS]

00:04:42   the last few days some of whom do not [TS]

00:04:44   understand the glory that is elf because [TS]

00:04:46   they think of it as kind of a uneven [TS]

00:04:48   movie that sort of stupid and I think [TS]

00:04:50   they don't quite get the spirit behind [TS]

00:04:51   it because one of the things that i love [TS]

00:04:54   about Will Ferrell is his total [TS]

00:04:55   commitment and on Saturday Night Live [TS]

00:04:58   that didn't always work because he [TS]

00:04:59   sometimes had really terrible characters [TS]

00:05:01   but he was totally committed to it and [TS]

00:05:03   you you know I even if you hated this is [TS]

00:05:06   my love her schedule my lover think he [TS]

00:05:09   did with Rachel Dratch I kinda hate that [TS]

00:05:10   one but he was all there and an elf [TS]

00:05:12   he's a child who is actually found by or [TS]

00:05:18   so left get left behind or something or [TS]

00:05:21   adopted winds up being raised the North [TS]

00:05:23   Pole by i bought a new heart by bob [TS]

00:05:25   newhart is awesome my always thinks he's [TS]

00:05:27   an elf we find that he's adopted even [TS]

00:05:29   though he's you know six and a half foot [TS]

00:05:30   tall and all the other officer repeat [TS]

00:05:32   all you rather lay in his childhood and [TS]

00:05:36   his twenties and he's not as good a [TS]

00:05:38   healthy thing so he goes to seek out his [TS]

00:05:41   up his real parents as biological [TS]

00:05:43   parents and Friends his mother's gone [TS]

00:05:45   and his father is of course James Caan [TS]

00:05:49   and worse it's I find the movie and it's [TS]

00:05:52   just great and at some other steam [TS]

00:05:54   version is that much as mom and there is [TS]

00:05:57   a God as they're playing Santa Claus [TS]

00:05:59   it's crazy movie it's not you know its [TS]

00:06:04   own forget of course there's a love [TS]

00:06:05   interest station and sort of slowly [TS]

00:06:07   forgetting it so i always want to see [TS]

00:06:09   additional but it is not sweet dishes [TS]

00:06:11   and we know it is rejection is in fact [TS]

00:06:14   only dish now this case your your [TS]

00:06:16   instinct is correct i wanted to say [TS]

00:06:17   Scarlett has additionally been wanting [TS]

00:06:19   for a rolls and I think the movie it's a [TS]

00:06:22   lot of fun because you know Will Ferrell [TS]

00:06:24   his character believes he's now and in [TS]

00:06:26   Santa Claus exists and RL so it's not [TS]

00:06:29   played [TS]

00:06:30   for muggin which are terrible movies [TS]

00:06:32   it's not played as farce exactly there's [TS]

00:06:34   a lot of slapstick and farcical things [TS]

00:06:36   he's an alpha star seekers dad and james [TS]

00:06:39   caan is awesome because James Caan is [TS]

00:06:40   doing a James Caan role he's kind of a [TS]

00:06:42   hard-ass and he doesn't really dig the [TS]

00:06:45   whole thing and he doesn't believe [TS]

00:06:45   anything that buddy the elf played by [TS]

00:06:47   Will Ferrell is saying for a while until [TS]

00:06:49   he starts to come around and it's [TS]

00:06:51   discreet things like it's oh my god [TS]

00:06:53   thats you know MF and james caan they're [TS]

00:06:55   being cut James Caan and because of that [TS]

00:06:59   is that it's a film I think it kind of [TS]

00:07:01   holds together and it's got some great [TS]

00:07:03   seats got some stupid stuff and of [TS]

00:07:04   course mother some lovely bits and [TS]

00:07:06   there's just a nice little things where [TS]

00:07:09   buddy the elf what's up essentially he [TS]

00:07:12   has a job at a department store or [TS]

00:07:15   thinks he has a job Department story [TS]

00:07:16   just starts working there because that's [TS]

00:07:17   where Santa is all the elves and he [TS]

00:07:19   stays overnight in the store and creates [TS]

00:07:22   of course because he is he's been [TS]

00:07:23   trained by else he creates in the most [TS]

00:07:25   crazy ridiculous over-the-top display [TS]

00:07:27   and no one can figure out you know who [TS]

00:07:30   did it and they for your corporate [TS]

00:07:31   corporate set down someone to do this [TS]

00:07:32   because they weren't you know [TS]

00:07:33   sufficiently cheerful enough for [TS]

00:07:35   something and of course it has the [TS]

00:07:37   obligatory so additional in the shower [TS]

00:07:39   scene which every move she appears and I [TS]

00:07:41   believe contractually has to have her in [TS]

00:07:43   the shower [TS]

00:07:44   she's in Hitchhiker's Guide the shower [TS]

00:07:45   i'm sure you know everything i can think [TS]

00:07:47   she's in the shower and and that's in [TS]

00:07:49   there too i agree though that that every [TS]

00:07:51   every move its traditional is in should [TS]

00:07:54   have a shower scene with her in it and [TS]

00:07:56   not will ferrell I didn't really start [TS]

00:07:58   the people the people like elf because I [TS]

00:08:00   don't know if we watched over here we [TS]

00:08:02   bought it we watch it every year i like [TS]

00:08:03   i like a lot i loved Alf I'll i think [TS]

00:08:07   it's great i watch it for the first time [TS]

00:08:09   a couple years ago when I I do like it I [TS]

00:08:11   like it it accepts its own absurdity [TS]

00:08:13   you're right in saying that will ferrell [TS]

00:08:15   commits that's actually the thing i love [TS]

00:08:17   about Will Ferrell and he's made a lot [TS]

00:08:18   of bad movies and he's made some good [TS]

00:08:19   movies but i think his best attribute is [TS]

00:08:22   that he fully commit and will do any [TS]

00:08:24   level of ridiculousness that is required [TS]

00:08:27   and even if i don't like the movie that [TS]

00:08:30   I'm watching if I will often just smile [TS]

00:08:33   at the fact that will Ferrell is doing [TS]

00:08:36   everything possible to try and make it [TS]

00:08:40   work [TS]

00:08:40   yeah not fun it is they do now in the [TS]

00:08:43   money he's there it moving they suck but [TS]

00:08:46   he is there and this character of Buddy [TS]

00:08:48   the elf is fully committed to Christmas [TS]

00:08:50   right he's insanely maniacally committed [TS]

00:08:52   in a way that no regular person would be [TS]

00:08:54   and that's right right exactly and [TS]

00:08:57   that's why and that's why it works and [TS]

00:08:59   you and I wanted to bring up [TS]

00:09:02   I mean there's that there's a hilarious [TS]

00:09:03   scene where Peter Dinklage is mistaken [TS]

00:09:06   by buddy for a real elf is he's an angry [TS]

00:09:09   oh yeah but I like there's a scene that [TS]

00:09:12   I love that where he gets a job and it's [TS]

00:09:14   like a boiler room [TS]

00:09:16   it's a start maybe they'll raise [TS]

00:09:18   concepts into the mailroom to do sorting [TS]

00:09:20   to keep matters here which is a classic [TS]

00:09:22   Christmas show [TS]

00:09:24   yeah exactly Miracle on thirty-fourth [TS]

00:09:26   Street right exactly but it's but it's [TS]

00:09:27   like the mailroom as hell it is like the [TS]

00:09:30   worst place in the world and Buddy the [TS]

00:09:33   elf shiny know and Buddy the elf astern [TS]

00:09:35   on anyway yeah so I agree I i love well [TS]

00:09:38   it's a good thing that's exactly the [TS]

00:09:40   thing I like so much about it i mean [TS]

00:09:42   it's it's the only recent a holiday film [TS]

00:09:44   that i can think of this really true to [TS]

00:09:46   the spirit of the older classics and and [TS]

00:09:49   it has a lot of kind of nifty little [TS]

00:09:50   references to the older films like I'm [TS]

00:09:53   pretty sure that the mailroom was there [TS]

00:09:55   because it was you know is featured in [TS]

00:09:57   Maryland sorcery fourth Street exactly [TS]

00:09:59   and actually I watched it last night [TS]

00:10:03   because I hadn't seen in awhile and and [TS]

00:10:04   noticed a couple of good little bits of [TS]

00:10:06   trivia in the in the credits are playing [TS]

00:10:10   one of the polar bear cubs at the [TS]

00:10:11   beginning when he's in the North Pole [TS]

00:10:13   and there's various animals and stop [TS]

00:10:16   motion animation Ray Harryhausen that I [TS]

00:10:21   think he has maybe two lines but you [TS]

00:10:22   know it's it's just super cool that [TS]

00:10:24   they've got this sort of a you know stop [TS]

00:10:26   motion animation going on in there a [TS]

00:10:27   providing the voice instead of instead [TS]

00:10:30   of burl ives being the Snowman it's at [TS]

00:10:33   Leon Redbone hook boat only a redbone [TS]

00:10:36   this is my problem it's I'd also say [TS]

00:10:39   it's gotta you know for those of us and [TS]

00:10:40   publishing it's got that bit where James [TS]

00:10:42   Caan is a children's book publisher is [TS]

00:10:44   publishing these terrible things any [TS]

00:10:46   signs off on proofs that have a blank [TS]

00:10:49   page in it and I'm like I can't believe [TS]

00:10:51   everything else I can believe the elf [TS]

00:10:52   insanity office [TS]

00:10:53   everything but I cannot believe he would [TS]

00:10:55   actually sign those proofs [TS]

00:10:57   no he's just that naughty the depiction [TS]

00:10:59   of Santa is very realistic depiction of [TS]

00:11:01   the publishing industry that's what not [TS]

00:11:03   so much [TS]

00:11:04   yeah and then lastly and I would never [TS]

00:11:05   cut this without seeing the credits [TS]

00:11:07   because it's been forever since I've [TS]

00:11:08   seen him I the character of the elf [TS]

00:11:12   foreman who kind of a no frowns on but [TS]

00:11:14   he's okay boys is actually Peter [TS]

00:11:17   Billingsley he's uncredited alright he's [TS]

00:11:21   uncredited but yes he does tomorrow play [TS]

00:11:23   that part and you would never recognize [TS]

00:11:25   him he may or may not come up later for [TS]

00:11:28   obvious reasons right yeah once you [TS]

00:11:31   realize it's him and end you take a good [TS]

00:11:34   look at him and you see those you know [TS]

00:11:35   bright blue eyes looking at you like oh [TS]

00:11:37   god has been feeling like crazy [TS]

00:11:39   I'm so because he's mostly a producer [TS]

00:11:41   now is me pretty hard riding so yeah [TS]

00:11:43   yeah that's exactly the same now as you [TS]

00:11:45   did and kind of weak little little [TS]

00:11:48   freaky part of this great about this [TS]

00:11:49   film is like every secondary character [TS]

00:11:51   is a terrific character in traffic actor [TS]

00:11:54   so it's got you know one-half of of Jack [TS]

00:11:57   Black and Kyle gasps aah gasps and it's [TS]

00:12:00   also Emily and the director is the one [TS]

00:12:03   that the writing team right to them and [TS]

00:12:05   you've got Amy Sedaris looking pretty [TS]

00:12:07   not making her face deformed as the [TS]

00:12:09   secretary James Caan and another thing [TS]

00:12:11   it's not it's very nice i'm still trying [TS]

00:12:13   to figure out how Mary Steenburgen and [TS]

00:12:14   james caan made that little italian boy [TS]

00:12:16   it's true i just love her she's so sweet [TS]

00:12:20   this film has a crazy amount of [TS]

00:12:22   sweetness and for being such a strange [TS]

00:12:23   weird thing it's just it's very sweet at [TS]

00:12:26   the end when everyone starts singing you [TS]

00:12:28   better not cry better not how it is i [TS]

00:12:30   actually tear up it's it's just it's [TS]

00:12:32   genuinely sweet and just kind of a [TS]

00:12:34   lovely thing I'm glad people liked it [TS]

00:12:37   we are going to put elf in the in the [TS]

00:12:38   vault in the movie vault on the nice [TS]

00:12:40   list which is no light or air correct [TS]

00:12:43   that's right we poke some holes in it so [TS]

00:12:45   it can breathe from there it's on the [TS]

00:12:47   nice list thank you glad that is [TS]

00:12:48   excellent use of the theme [TS]

00:12:51   let's uh let's move on and i'm going to [TS]

00:12:55   let damn freaks have our next choice [TS]

00:12:58   this movie is not officially a holiday [TS]

00:13:00   movie but so much of it takes place on [TS]

00:13:02   the holidays that I'm demon it so and I [TS]

00:13:05   should also say that probably [TS]

00:13:07   the big reason that i love it so much is [TS]

00:13:09   because my wife and I have always loved [TS]

00:13:11   it and so it's got a lot of sentimental [TS]

00:13:13   value but it also has to do with all the [TS]

00:13:17   things that make you know the holidays [TS]

00:13:18   great family being together with you [TS]

00:13:21   know with your loved ones for Godfather [TS]

00:13:23   admit it [TS]

00:13:25   yeah but aren't and that is actually [TS]

00:13:27   1989's When Harry Met Sally ohh haha and [TS]

00:13:32   we love this movie it's more of a new [TS]

00:13:35   year's movies and creates its holidays [TS]

00:13:37   you know they're dragging the Christmas [TS]

00:13:38   tree through New York City yeah there's [TS]

00:13:41   all these you know there's the Bing [TS]

00:13:42   Crosby version of have yourself a merry [TS]

00:13:43   little christmas which I contend is the [TS]

00:13:45   best version sorry Frank fans and you [TS]

00:13:49   know there's lots of scenes on the [TS]

00:13:50   holidays lots of things about being [TS]

00:13:52   together with people the holidays being [TS]

00:13:53   ripped apart from people at the holidays [TS]

00:13:55   and in the end it's you know you know [TS]

00:13:57   the the final scene in The New Year's [TS]

00:13:59   party where they say hey this is what [TS]

00:14:02   I've been looking for all along what [TS]

00:14:04   I've been doing and it's it's around our [TS]

00:14:07   family it's sort of the holiday movie we [TS]

00:14:09   make sure we watch once a year [TS]

00:14:11   dan my wife and I watched try to watch [TS]

00:14:13   that movie on new year's eve every every [TS]

00:14:15   yes and and and the other thing I think [TS]

00:14:18   is really interesting about it is that I [TS]

00:14:20   i told my wife when I guess it was last [TS]

00:14:22   year I said you know this was the very [TS]

00:14:23   first aaron sorkin movie because the [TS]

00:14:26   although that because the dialogue in it [TS]

00:14:29   was at the time when it when it came out [TS]

00:14:31   9990 dialogue around really snappy [TS]

00:14:34   dialogue and lower and more effort but [TS]

00:14:35   Peter people are talking over each other [TS]

00:14:37   people talking over each other people [TS]

00:14:38   talking over each other all right back [TS]

00:14:40   and forth back and forth back and forth [TS]

00:14:41   you know like the wave no one really [TS]

00:14:43   actually talk to your life but he's [TS]

00:14:44   funny and so we were laughing about that [TS]

00:14:46   because we're thinking now it's all the [TS]

00:14:48   rage you know for these air circuit [TS]

00:14:49   movies they had that kind of dialogue [TS]

00:14:50   but in 99 this was pretty interesting [TS]

00:14:54   way of having you know two characters in [TS]

00:14:56   the movie talk [TS]

00:14:57   yeah i am meg Ryan has never looked [TS]

00:15:01   lovelier in a couple of scenes in the [TS]

00:15:03   middle of that movie so or yet or been [TS]

00:15:05   better and billy crystal has never [TS]

00:15:07   looked better cuz for frankly really [TS]

00:15:09   yeah he's never look that's the only [TS]

00:15:11   movie which i could buy him as a [TS]

00:15:12   romantic lead after I exactly oh yeah [TS]

00:15:15   I've seen in other films he's always [TS]

00:15:16   he's always too sticky he's always too [TS]

00:15:18   during the week with the thing and this [TS]

00:15:20   is actually [TS]

00:15:21   sort of honest lots of his stand-up [TS]

00:15:23   lines are actually in this movie better [TS]

00:15:24   right hehe something about it he's a [TS]

00:15:27   he's not so sticky hehe it's a little [TS]

00:15:30   more rounded of character [TS]

00:15:31   I think it helps that his character is [TS]

00:15:32   so beaten down so early in the movie [TS]

00:15:34   when he's like that he's abandoned by [TS]

00:15:36   his wife she leaves him for another man [TS]

00:15:38   that gets you on his side a little bit [TS]

00:15:40   and I think that helps that movie [TS]

00:15:42   structurally to have this your review [TS]

00:15:44   how to root for him a little because mr. [TS]

00:15:46   0new yeah well it's Charlie and his [TS]

00:15:48   character actually developed over the [TS]

00:15:50   course the movie like you said so he's [TS]

00:15:51   he's he's kind of the cheesy obnoxious [TS]

00:15:54   guy for the first you know 45 minutes in [TS]

00:15:56   there you suddenly see is his softer [TS]

00:15:58   side I his is I've been rubbed in the [TS]

00:16:00   ground side and he comes you know in the [TS]

00:16:03   end he turns out he's actually a really [TS]

00:16:04   good guy but yeah there's so much so [TS]

00:16:08   many quotable i just kind of like the e [TS]

00:16:10   the princess bride of romantic comedies [TS]

00:16:14   it's like the contemporary adult radio [TS]

00:16:16   or the princess bride and a good Carrie [TS]

00:16:18   Fisher I think this is the only other [TS]

00:16:20   things other than Star Wars of the [TS]

00:16:21   carrie fisher's been in that I liked but [TS]

00:16:23   Carrie Fisher and Bruno Kirby really [TS]

00:16:25   plays so great they were awesome as [TS]

00:16:27   important like in there in the thirties [TS]

00:16:30   and forties those the sort of actors who [TS]

00:16:32   could have made a 30-year career playing [TS]

00:16:34   the best friend of the leading man in [TS]

00:16:36   the leading lady and they just would've [TS]

00:16:38   been every single movie they would have [TS]

00:16:39   retired very very wealthy and very well [TS]

00:16:41   known about ever having other name above [TS]

00:16:43   the title [TS]

00:16:44   Bruno Kirby yeah he is he's great miss [TS]

00:16:48   they're both great miss this is a and [TS]

00:16:50   they're not that many characters in this [TS]

00:16:51   movie really i mean they're really the [TS]

00:16:52   four characters and a few other very [TS]

00:16:55   minor characters it really is about the [TS]

00:16:57   for the for the characters and and they [TS]

00:17:00   try to try to double date with the wrong [TS]

00:17:02   pair and it's very clear immediately [TS]

00:17:04   that Bruno Kirby and Carrie Fisher want [TS]

00:17:07   to be together and they abandoned harry [TS]

00:17:08   and Sally leave them by themselves it's [TS]

00:17:10   just yeah just adore also great to cameo [TS]

00:17:13   Rob Reiner mother of course right who [TS]

00:17:15   says I'll have what she's having [TS]

00:17:17   and gerald ford's son is also in this [TS]

00:17:19   movie really thats some trivia the it's [TS]

00:17:21   always boyfriend who she who takes he [TS]

00:17:23   takes her to the airport which you [TS]

00:17:25   should never do at the beginning of a [TS]

00:17:26   relationship because then later right [TS]

00:17:28   you don't take them to the airport they [TS]

00:17:29   say why didn't you take why don't you [TS]

00:17:30   take me to the airport anymore say I've [TS]

00:17:32   seen this movie too many times yes [TS]

00:17:34   yeah yeah might my wife and we were [TS]

00:17:36   first courting each other we would put [TS]

00:17:38   this movie far too much it's a little [TS]

00:17:39   scary but and then all of course all the [TS]

00:17:42   know the little vignettes with the the [TS]

00:17:45   old couples where you're perfect for the [TS]

00:17:47   right yeah I think that's a great choice [TS]

00:17:49   but to keep and keeping my my string of [TS]

00:17:51   a job damn of odd movies but like I [TS]

00:17:54   picked groundhog day for time travel so [TS]

00:17:56   I'm just going for that unusual [TS]

00:17:58   what every time a great choice great [TS]

00:18:01   choice dan will put it in the vault then [TS]

00:18:04   we can cuddle up next to elf will [TS]

00:18:06   ferrell will be fully committing the [TS]

00:18:08   cuddling up next to when harry met sally [TS]

00:18:10   let's go to mr. Andy anat cohen next [TS]

00:18:14   I'll a proposed choice because by pic [TS]

00:18:17   has actually already been mentioned [TS]

00:18:19   groundhog day I think it's one of my all [TS]

00:18:23   exactly see well it's even this is this [TS]

00:18:25   is like the preparation you do for this [TS]

00:18:26   for this kind of a topic because I'm [TS]

00:18:29   like well okay sent a clear the mystery [TS]

00:18:30   science theater 3000 version of santa [TS]

00:18:32   claus conquers the martians or the [TS]

00:18:35   cinematic titanic personal that's great [TS]

00:18:37   that's a great pic visit there's a [TS]

00:18:39   perfect it's the perfect enhancement to [TS]

00:18:41   a really really awful movie but there's [TS]

00:18:43   not really much to talk about it's [TS]

00:18:44   really really funny [TS]

00:18:45   well done ten bucks most money goes to [TS]

00:18:47   the people who actually put it together [TS]

00:18:49   good go for it I I i think that I I [TS]

00:18:52   didn't pick groundhog day specifically [TS]

00:18:54   for this topic I've always thought that [TS]

00:18:57   groundhog day is probably the most [TS]

00:19:00   authentic version of a christmas carol [TS]

00:19:02   that's ever been done in the form of a [TS]

00:19:05   moon even more so than the other bill [TS]

00:19:07   murray christmas carol was going to say [TS]

00:19:08   screws try screws by now the idea of a [TS]

00:19:12   christmas carol the idea of Scrooge's so [TS]

00:19:14   homogenized that all you got to do is [TS]

00:19:16   get a dude column Scrooge make sure he's [TS]

00:19:19   rich and really really nasty at the very [TS]

00:19:20   top of the movie and you okay the [TS]

00:19:23   government will allow you to get the tax [TS]

00:19:24   break that has occurred that as a [TS]

00:19:25   according to you by virtue of the fact [TS]

00:19:27   you're making virtual christmas carol [TS]

00:19:28   they don't really sort of tune into what [TS]

00:19:30   the story was really about like if you [TS]

00:19:32   if you take the time to really like free [TS]

00:19:35   the original story which is really an [TS]

00:19:37   amazing or listen to Patrick Stewart's [TS]

00:19:39   dramatic reading of it which is as close [TS]

00:19:41   as you're going to get to actually [TS]

00:19:43   reading the original story because the [TS]

00:19:46   whole story of Christmas Carol [TS]

00:19:47   was supposed to be if you if you're [TS]

00:19:49   gonna make a great version of this you [TS]

00:19:50   have to understand that screws in the [TS]

00:19:52   villains Scrooge's the hero of the story [TS]

00:19:54   where he has to rehabilitate himself he [TS]

00:19:58   has to spend one night confronting [TS]

00:19:59   everything that's going on in his life [TS]

00:20:01   all the mistakes that he's made at the [TS]

00:20:03   end it's not that he's terrified that [TS]

00:20:06   gosh what if I've been it's been proven [TS]

00:20:09   to me that if I don't change my ways i'm [TS]

00:20:10   gonna die and go to hell [TS]

00:20:12   it's more like God I have been one big [TS]

00:20:14   bus load of crap for my entire life [TS]

00:20:17   unfortunately i have some unfortunately [TS]

00:20:20   I'm i woke up in the morning I got and I [TS]

00:20:22   had an opportunity to make this day [TS]

00:20:23   better than any other day that I've ever [TS]

00:20:25   had my entire life really more of a [TS]

00:20:27   horse-drawn carriage load [TS]

00:20:29   no I think they they did have the honor [TS]

00:20:32   of respect and I think that they could [TS]

00:20:34   have created it specifically for the [TS]

00:20:36   load of crap which was was it wasn't [TS]

00:20:38   just the crap in his life he was a [TS]

00:20:40   leading export of crap in other people's [TS]

00:20:42   lives [TS]

00:20:42   I'll accept that so and this was the [TS]

00:20:44   Industrial Revolution so he probably [TS]

00:20:46   would have paid to have small tiny tiny [TS]

00:20:48   workhouse children assembling all the [TS]

00:20:50   gears and rods in this machine because [TS]

00:20:53   he was he was quick it was a factory [TS]

00:20:55   town for emotional crap everywhere [TS]

00:20:58   everywhere around the Scrooge and Marley [TS]

00:21:00   business district but so but what is [TS]

00:21:04   Groundhog Day but the entire that same [TS]

00:21:06   entire thing where Bill Murray is he's [TS]

00:21:08   not named screw just not Christmas [TS]

00:21:09   although we have lots and lots of snow [TS]

00:21:11   around so we can call that you know nice [TS]

00:21:12   and Christmassy in wintry a his whole [TS]

00:21:15   job is to figure out a it is certainly [TS]

00:21:18   to figure out what's wrong with his life [TS]

00:21:20   what is he not doing correctly [TS]

00:21:22   why is he being YC so selfish and [TS]

00:21:24   self-centered why does he absolutely not [TS]

00:21:26   spend any time thinking about anybody [TS]

00:21:28   else [TS]

00:21:29   and although there's never any stated [TS]

00:21:32   rule as to why he's living this day over [TS]

00:21:34   and over and over again [TS]

00:21:35   there comes the day when he lives this [TS]

00:21:37   day perfectly where he's doing nothing [TS]

00:21:39   but thinking about other people not [TS]

00:21:40   because he's desperate to avoid faith [TS]

00:21:42   but because he's been trapped in the [TS]

00:21:44   state for I think I'll Ramos said that [TS]

00:21:47   the original plan was that he was sort [TS]

00:21:50   of stuck in this day for 10 years but by [TS]

00:21:52   the end of the movie so over 10 years he [TS]

00:21:54   had basically played out every other [TS]

00:21:56   scenario of [TS]

00:21:57   what do you do when you know that at the [TS]

00:21:59   end of the day there'll be no [TS]

00:22:00   consequences and whilst restart the [TS]

00:22:01   entire day brand-new he goes through all [TS]

00:22:04   the selfish stuff of using people and [TS]

00:22:06   stealing and even have some fun killing [TS]

00:22:08   himself time and time and time again to [TS]

00:22:10   try to escape it but at some point it [TS]

00:22:12   becomes what can i do to make this day [TS]

00:22:14   the best first day I could possibly ever [TS]

00:22:16   have and so he rehabilitates himself [TS]

00:22:19   this is the day that the end of the [TS]

00:22:20   movie i do legitimately love who he is [TS]

00:22:25   by the end of the movie because it [TS]

00:22:27   really is that entire scene at the end [TS]

00:22:29   of a christmas carol we're screwed just [TS]

00:22:31   throwing over throwing open the door to [TS]

00:22:32   the the the door the doors to his window [TS]

00:22:36   and so are you boil wonderful boy what a [TS]

00:22:38   lovely boy get you know that to the [TS]

00:22:41   prize Turkey thats hanging the poachers [TS]

00:22:43   going to fetch it's such a lovely boy [TS]

00:22:45   well the only sits more subdued because [TS]

00:22:47   he's like the got the same guy that he [TS]

00:22:50   wanted to see the the same guy who when [TS]

00:22:52   confronted with like you know Ned [TS]

00:22:54   Ryerson Ned the head needlenose ned was [TS]

00:22:57   just pursue probably annoyed by him the [TS]

00:22:59   first time you met him and then when he [TS]

00:23:01   was in the gosh I can do whatever I want [TS]

00:23:03   this is great i could just punch him [TS]

00:23:04   right in the freaking face and nobody [TS]

00:23:06   will care because nothing happened about [TS]

00:23:08   it give it a free choices like no I will [TS]

00:23:10   make this guy i will give this guy the [TS]

00:23:12   best day he's ever had as a cell when [TS]

00:23:14   I'm gonna buy a boat insurance even [TS]

00:23:16   though i don't have a boat i'm going to [TS]

00:23:18   take care of every single person in this [TS]

00:23:20   town only because that's something that [TS]

00:23:23   I can do and I don't want to wait for [TS]

00:23:27   anybody else to fix things in this town [TS]

00:23:29   you know there's a subtle thing I wonder [TS]

00:23:30   if I'm the only one who's caught this or [TS]

00:23:32   I'm getting I'm getting it wrong as the [TS]

00:23:34   chris elliott character as the cameraman [TS]

00:23:36   for the shoot that that bill murray [TS]

00:23:38   supposed to be doing on-site there in a [TS]

00:23:41   Pakistani chris elliott and the [TS]

00:23:43   beginning the movie you think he's a [TS]

00:23:45   really nice guy is being abused by the [TS]

00:23:47   end of the movie chris elliott seems [TS]

00:23:49   like a total schmuck and there's like a [TS]

00:23:51   cosmic balance power as the day goes on [TS]

00:23:55   the more you see cresselia or as the day [TS]

00:23:56   repeats itself the worst where she comes [TS]

00:23:58   off as Bill Murray becomes a better and [TS]

00:24:01   better person at the end you're like [TS]

00:24:02   what it's come back i think i think is [TS]

00:24:05   that everybody looks better have cut [TS]

00:24:08   place next to Bill Murray at the [TS]

00:24:09   beginning that movie [TS]

00:24:11   I also i also agree that if this movie [TS]

00:24:13   had been shot let's say six years later [TS]

00:24:14   he would have paid played by Paul [TS]

00:24:16   Giamatti good because he's not he's not [TS]

00:24:19   that sort of like active jerk is more [TS]

00:24:22   like he's just he was raised in a [TS]

00:24:26   basement with very little contact with [TS]

00:24:28   outside people he has to sort of great [TS]

00:24:30   released it released as an adult he now [TS]

00:24:32   has to sort of figure out how human [TS]

00:24:34   beings operate [TS]

00:24:35   oh oh yes he is the sort of person to [TS]

00:24:37   make a big big flash about tipping a [TS]

00:24:39   bartender at dollar or two dollars while [TS]

00:24:43   this perspective date is watching events [TS]

00:24:44   like sneak back and like remove one [TS]

00:24:46   dollar from that jar make a good case [TS]

00:24:49   for this being Christmas Eve despite [TS]

00:24:51   being place very high ground hard guy [TS]

00:24:54   yeah it's it's a it's a holiday I i love [TS]

00:24:57   groundhog day I think it's probably [TS]

00:24:58   probably in my top 10 films of all time [TS]

00:25:01   I think so well-constructed and and the [TS]

00:25:04   thing that I think is remarkable about [TS]

00:25:06   it as a bill murray vehicle is it's one [TS]

00:25:08   of the very few instances I've seen [TS]

00:25:10   where he does emotion and it seems it [TS]

00:25:12   seems like real emotion it doesn't seem [TS]

00:25:14   like he's he's play-acting or he's being [TS]

00:25:16   sarcastic and that's really thinking [TS]

00:25:18   about Scrooge that never quite worked [TS]

00:25:20   for me is that big scene at the end [TS]

00:25:22   where he is you know you can have the [TS]

00:25:24   miracle to and all that business it it [TS]

00:25:26   seems very contrived and very fake and [TS]

00:25:29   and almost you know Manik and and weird [TS]

00:25:32   and and it's it's not so much i would [TS]

00:25:34   expect the people around him to be [TS]

00:25:35   applauding and laughing along with him [TS]

00:25:37   more sort of cycling toward the exit [TS]

00:25:40   quietly and that's also in the problems [TS]

00:25:41   of the end of christmas carol because [TS]

00:25:44   all of a sudden Josh ok thank you you [TS]

00:25:47   gave me is a secret turkey and like [TS]

00:25:50   you're you you will you went to church [TS]

00:25:52   that one day that makes up for the fact [TS]

00:25:54   that you put hundreds if not thousands [TS]

00:25:56   of poor Londoners out of the street and [TS]

00:25:58   then in the middle of the cold like [TS]

00:26:00   we're supposed to herald you as the [TS]

00:26:01   resident finest man in town because of [TS]

00:26:03   one day he decided to start to be a nice [TS]

00:26:06   guy [TS]

00:26:07   alright well that's the brilliance of [TS]

00:26:09   the of the of the setting of this we [TS]

00:26:11   kind of get the impression that he's [TS]

00:26:12   going to continue to help or of course [TS]

00:26:14   but that's the difference is that it's [TS]

00:26:15   it's it's a point that's made veteran in [TS]

00:26:17   the book then in the movies [TS]

00:26:18   sure this is the the brilliance of the [TS]

00:26:21   setting of the movie right because in [TS]

00:26:23   any other setting [TS]

00:26:24   where he's you know around people that [TS]

00:26:26   know him and know that he's an ass [TS]

00:26:28   it doesn't work but he goes out to the [TS]

00:26:30   middle of nowhere where no one knows him [TS]

00:26:31   except on TV and the only person only [TS]

00:26:34   one person you get the impression that [TS]

00:26:36   I'm Andy McDowell has never really [TS]

00:26:37   worked there before and chris elliott [TS]

00:26:39   you know he's a little socially in [TS]

00:26:42   episode 1 matter but no one knows him so [TS]

00:26:45   he can keep going through this every day [TS]

00:26:46   and by the time he's actually it you [TS]

00:26:48   know become this good real good person [TS]

00:26:51   no one else really know that he made [TS]

00:26:53   this dramatic change they just think [TS]

00:26:54   that's the way he's always been right [TS]

00:26:55   right yeah what else if it becomes [TS]

00:26:58   interesting just that this is this is [TS]

00:27:00   why that movie begins and ends in [TS]

00:27:03   exactly the right spots because you [TS]

00:27:05   don't want to have like a follow-up a [TS]

00:27:07   week later where everybody who knows him [TS]

00:27:09   back in this back in the states [TS]

00:27:10   violation of his / as any idea why are [TS]

00:27:12   you what are you up to what are you [TS]

00:27:14   trying to get out of me the fact that [TS]

00:27:16   you brought donuts for the entire office [TS]

00:27:18   are you tried are you trying to weasel [TS]

00:27:20   internal god that's just like you fill [TS]

00:27:22   maybe that's not even an issue because [TS]

00:27:24   the last line of the film is let's live [TS]

00:27:26   here so you know right here is done with [TS]

00:27:28   this purple one of the smartest things [TS]

00:27:30   the entire movie is that they wisely [TS]

00:27:32   realized that nobody in the audience [TS]

00:27:34   cares why this day is being replayed [TS]

00:27:36   over and over again [TS]

00:27:37   nobody cares if there's any rules for [TS]

00:27:40   how he can pray how we got into this or [TS]

00:27:42   how we can break out of it because there [TS]

00:27:44   earlier draft of the script that [TS]

00:27:46   according to the director commentary on [TS]

00:27:48   the DVD it was that all she he created [TS]

00:27:51   created an old girlfriend badly in the [TS]

00:27:53   girlfriend put a spell on without him [TS]

00:27:55   knowing it this is how this happened [TS]

00:27:56   nobody cares about that just was just [TS]

00:27:58   accept that this just like just like we [TS]

00:28:00   can accept that will Ferrell is a six [TS]

00:28:02   foot three else haha who has to hop and [TS]

00:28:04   skip the true cross walks in New York [TS]

00:28:06   City it's okay we're in a movie theater [TS]

00:28:09   we we're willing to suspend our [TS]

00:28:10   disbelief if you do a good job with this [TS]

00:28:12   movie will put groundhog day in the [TS]

00:28:14   vault and hit when harry met sally and [TS]

00:28:17   elf will say what are you doing here and [TS]

00:28:20   but that's I think that's a great [TS]

00:28:21   selection i do think that movie is a [TS]

00:28:23   classic and I love thinking of it as a [TS]

00:28:26   christmas carol that is a great way of [TS]

00:28:28   thinking of Groundhog Day now you can [TS]

00:28:31   watch groundhog day in December not just [TS]

00:28:33   februari oh thank goodness that's great [TS]

00:28:35   but it was a gift you give it is that's [TS]

00:28:37   it's [TS]

00:28:38   it's more portable now so long as the [TS]

00:28:39   government will get off our backs about [TS]

00:28:41   when we can watch this movie [TS]

00:28:42   let's uh move on to miss Caldwell [TS]

00:28:47   serenity called well what do you think [TS]

00:28:49   what what do you have for us [TS]

00:28:51   okay well growing up my parents and my [TS]

00:28:55   sister and I would routinely watched [TS]

00:28:57   three movies and I will talk about one [TS]

00:28:59   but the the three movies were it's a [TS]

00:29:01   wonderful life Miracle on thirty-fourth [TS]

00:29:03   Street and and he's going to kill me but [TS]

00:29:05   white Christmas so i'm not going to talk [TS]

00:29:09   about white Christmas for fear of having [TS]

00:29:11   this turn into a nasty holiday special [TS]

00:29:14   I'm nothing but sunshine and light if [TS]

00:29:16   you wanna find quality but memories [TS]

00:29:18   attached to it that I certainly would be [TS]

00:29:20   a very small person to try to sell you [TS]

00:29:21   those members I appreciate you not [TS]

00:29:23   ruining my seven-year-old childhood [TS]

00:29:25   dreams I but thankfully I won't talk to [TS]

00:29:28   introduce Miss miracle there's another [TS]

00:29:30   podcast you can listen to if you'd like [TS]

00:29:32   to [TS]

00:29:32   we're holding rims holiday Christmas [TS]

00:29:35   running definitely i love that one [TS]

00:29:36   I think Syracuse would do it good he [TS]

00:29:39   certainly would and make fun of me [TS]

00:29:41   anyway I'm i want to talk about it's a [TS]

00:29:44   wonderful life because it's probably my [TS]

00:29:46   favorite holiday movie and I try and [TS]

00:29:48   watch it at least once a year [TS]

00:29:50   yeah I love it night Jimmy Jimmy Stewart [TS]

00:29:54   is probably one of my personal heroes [TS]

00:29:55   and I watched a lot of movies from the [TS]

00:29:58   the thirties or forties and fifties [TS]

00:30:00   growing up so I love that era of [TS]

00:30:03   filmmaking and frank capra's movies are [TS]

00:30:05   great but it's a wonderful life at and [TS]

00:30:07   actually in in coincide with all the [TS]

00:30:10   previous pics that we have it has a [TS]

00:30:12   lovely has a lovely our core level for a [TS]

00:30:15   story I think that's what makes for good [TS]

00:30:17   holiday movies is its you have a [TS]

00:30:19   character who's in one place and then he [TS]

00:30:22   discovered either there's something [TS]

00:30:24   that's like self-discovery or it's a [TS]

00:30:26   life change or something but you always [TS]

00:30:29   you know even even those parts of this [TS]

00:30:31   movie are very you know getting go to a [TS]

00:30:33   dark place I it all comes out right in [TS]

00:30:36   the end and I i really like that about [TS]

00:30:38   this movie I there's a lot of a lot of [TS]

00:30:41   great scenes i love that we start with [TS]

00:30:43   you know basically start by giving a the [TS]

00:30:46   first half of the movie is a summary of [TS]

00:30:48   of Jimmy Stewart's character's life [TS]

00:30:50   up until then so you get all this you [TS]

00:30:52   know you get you get a reason for oh [TS]

00:30:54   here's here's how his life could have [TS]

00:30:57   gone here's here are the people that are [TS]

00:30:59   important in his life here is what he'd [TS]

00:31:01   be giving up by committing suicide at [TS]

00:31:04   you just have some wonderful character [TS]

00:31:06   interaction i love lionel Barrymore with [TS]

00:31:08   a passion and he plays the bad guys so [TS]

00:31:11   well Henry Traverse is adorable as [TS]

00:31:15   Clarence Donna Reed puts in a fine [TS]

00:31:18   showing as madam librarian in general I [TS]

00:31:22   just it's hard to articulate exactly why [TS]

00:31:25   I love this movie it's a bunch of really [TS]

00:31:26   lovely vignettes that put together [TS]

00:31:28   create a lovely overarching film and I [TS]

00:31:32   saw it actually got a chance to see it [TS]

00:31:34   in as a 35-millimeter print on my [TS]

00:31:36   birthday about three years ago and like [TS]

00:31:38   this small theater in Connecticut and [TS]

00:31:40   until I saw the the revamped Raiders [TS]

00:31:43   print I think that was my favorite film [TS]

00:31:44   ever seen in theaters [TS]

00:31:46   well it wasn't a terrible failure during [TS]

00:31:48   capital and he was this originally like [TS]

00:31:50   a box-office flop and it it took three [TS]

00:31:52   runs on television to turn into [TS]

00:31:54   something that we all adore so much of a [TS]

00:31:56   lambasted this movie is like Oh Frank [TS]

00:31:58   Cambridge's doesn't he doesn't have the [TS]

00:32:00   stuff anymore and I don't know what yeah [TS]

00:32:02   i mean it was wrong for chorus [TS]

00:32:05   yeah we need some nostalgia ready the [TS]

00:32:08   the lens of nostalgia for this to appear [TS]

00:32:10   because when you're living through that [TS]

00:32:12   you're like we're in the middle of a war [TS]

00:32:13   and we're all poor and it's all horrible [TS]

00:32:15   when it came out but you need a few [TS]

00:32:16   years space maybe yeah well I think [TS]

00:32:19   everybody's kind of in that mindset [TS]

00:32:20   where they're like no all of our lives [TS]

00:32:22   are sucky what are you why are you [TS]

00:32:24   trying to instead of give us you know [TS]

00:32:26   escapism like white Christmas why are [TS]

00:32:29   you why are you trying to prove that [TS]

00:32:30   things are are terrible and that there [TS]

00:32:32   are bad things and where are you talking [TS]

00:32:34   about mortgages and home loans we don't [TS]

00:32:36   want to watch out holiday movie about [TS]

00:32:37   home loans [TS]

00:32:40   yeah in the future financial collapses [TS]

00:32:43   will not occur and this will not be [TS]

00:32:45   relevant anyway I have a question for [TS]

00:32:48   you as I came to this movie very late i [TS]

00:32:51   only saw it for the first time I don't [TS]

00:32:52   know five or ten years ago [TS]

00:32:54   do you think that the the focus on him [TS]

00:32:59   being on the bridge the focus on the [TS]

00:33:02   here's what would happen [TS]

00:33:04   if your life had been different which is [TS]

00:33:06   I was surprised how long it takes to get [TS]

00:33:09   to that point of the movie do you think [TS]

00:33:11   that do you think that the movie not the [TS]

00:33:15   movie suffers but the movie that it's [TS]

00:33:17   harder to view the movie now because [TS]

00:33:18   it's got this [TS]

00:33:19   it's taken a life of its own but but but [TS]

00:33:22   people are very focused on the last part [TS]

00:33:24   of the movie instead of the movie as a [TS]

00:33:25   whole [TS]

00:33:26   no it's true i mean before when I i [TS]

00:33:28   watch this movie a lot like I said I [TS]

00:33:30   pretty much every year growing up and [TS]

00:33:31   there's a three or four-year period [TS]

00:33:32   where I didn't watch it and you get sort [TS]

00:33:34   of like the idealized all this is what [TS]

00:33:36   this movie is about and then when i [TS]

00:33:38   watched it again for the first time [TS]

00:33:40   after those like four years I'm like all [TS]

00:33:41   right there's this whole first half that [TS]

00:33:44   we just don't really think about but at [TS]

00:33:47   the same time I feel like that first [TS]

00:33:49   half is so integral to selling the [TS]

00:33:52   second half like you don't really care [TS]

00:33:55   about Jimmy Stewart's alternate reality [TS]

00:33:57   life if you don't know the people like [TS]

00:33:59   the cast of characters in the first [TS]

00:34:01   place I feel like you don't you don't [TS]

00:34:02   get the high school dance you don't get [TS]

00:34:04   him meet Mary you don't you don't get [TS]

00:34:05   all of that in the first half then [TS]

00:34:07   Oh member is a librarian like you don't [TS]

00:34:10   that doesn't hit you as as well as I [TS]

00:34:13   think it would like if you start that if [TS]

00:34:15   you start him jump like you start him [TS]

00:34:17   jumping off the bridge all all like a [TS]

00:34:19   Christmas like a Scrooge tail [TS]

00:34:22   I don't think you quite it quite [TS]

00:34:25   connects as well as it could would might [TS]

00:34:27   be the modern way you do this story [TS]

00:34:29   would be first off you start with him on [TS]

00:34:31   the bridge [TS]

00:34:31   yeah and then you do you know two days [TS]

00:34:33   earlier which are hate what you do those [TS]

00:34:36   sort of because there's the scene at the [TS]

00:34:37   beginning with the the Angels locking [TS]

00:34:39   ring and Claire ya know the Angels eight [TS]

00:34:41   they inform us that someone is all other [TS]

00:34:44   boleyn so you can sort of like a memento [TS]

00:34:46   cut when you start with like to keep [TS]

00:34:49   like going to the very very beginning [TS]

00:34:50   and what happens is he he's in the bad [TS]

00:34:54   universe and he decides to step through [TS]

00:34:56   a portal and change history so that is [TS]

00:34:59   what I I'm just I'm just saying I i [TS]

00:35:01   sometimes I think I worry that people [TS]

00:35:03   will look at this movie and think oh [TS]

00:35:04   this is the famous movie where all this [TS]

00:35:06   stuff happens and maybe it's something [TS]

00:35:09   about our patients now versus our [TS]

00:35:11   patients you know the patience of the [TS]

00:35:13   people who are the anticipated audience [TS]

00:35:14   of this back then but I was shocked when [TS]

00:35:16   i first saw it [TS]

00:35:17   this movie is not about him being [TS]

00:35:19   plunged into this world where he didn't [TS]

00:35:21   exist you know the movies about the guy [TS]

00:35:23   and his life and then all that other [TS]

00:35:26   stuff happens and it doesn't happen 10 [TS]

00:35:28   minutes into the movie it happens way [TS]

00:35:30   deep in the movie Jason the table is a [TS]

00:35:32   wonderful life right that's right i was [TS]

00:35:35   wonderful did you not think it was [TS]

00:35:37   wonderful [TS]

00:35:37   what's wrong with you don't think the [TS]

00:35:39   big the big deal is just to point out [TS]

00:35:41   that if he had through it wasn't just [TS]

00:35:43   the it wasn't just the idea that he [TS]

00:35:46   would kill himself but he would kill him [TS]

00:35:47   kill himself having thrown away this [TS]

00:35:50   lifetime of experiences that had come to [TS]

00:35:52   that point also the experiences that [TS]

00:35:54   would have come after that point that he [TS]

00:35:56   would be a worst-case would go to jail [TS]

00:35:57   for a few years but he would have gotten [TS]

00:35:59   out of jail and he had this really great [TS]

00:36:01   life to return to but it's it's such a [TS]

00:36:04   but it's such a great movie that you do [TS]

00:36:06   tend to overlook to rather glaring [TS]

00:36:08   issues so we say now we get both of them [TS]

00:36:12   have to do with Clarence now we when he [TS]

00:36:14   pops in pcs Jimmy Stewart is about to [TS]

00:36:18   commit suicide [TS]

00:36:19   how does Clarence decided to keep Jimmy [TS]

00:36:21   Stewart from jumping off the bridge [TS]

00:36:22   killing himself by jumping off the [TS]

00:36:24   bridge himself and forcing Jimmy Stewart [TS]

00:36:26   to jump into and thereby proving that [TS]

00:36:29   the bridge is not nearly tall enough to [TS]

00:36:31   actually kill either of them are going [TS]

00:36:33   to failure right so i would have all [TS]

00:36:34   depressed because that to the second [TS]

00:36:38   problem though this is this is what like [TS]

00:36:40   I i do love this movie but this this [TS]

00:36:43   idea popped into my head it color like [TS]

00:36:45   all subsequent viewings I realize that [TS]

00:36:48   at the very very beginning the the two [TS]

00:36:50   like senior angels once were actual [TS]

00:36:52   actual galaxies as opposed to just one [TS]

00:36:55   little little star pip have like called [TS]

00:36:57   and Clarence because I well he got these [TS]

00:36:59   pieces and it hasn't got his wings yet [TS]

00:37:00   he's sort of you know sort of like the [TS]

00:37:02   misfit of the group we gotta go get his [TS]

00:37:04   wings gotta get this gig you realize [TS]

00:37:07   that what they're saying is that they've [TS]

00:37:08   keep sending him to prevent people from [TS]

00:37:10   killing themselves and they kill [TS]

00:37:11   themselves anyway this is the first time [TS]

00:37:13   you've succeeded and talking something [TS]

00:37:15   out of it [TS]

00:37:16   oh my god he leaves a trail of bodies [TS]

00:37:18   behind them and eternity long o'clair [TS]

00:37:20   and how I prefer to think that he just [TS]

00:37:22   got transferred to the prevent suicide [TS]

00:37:25   division rather than he was in a [TS]

00:37:27   lifetime event given something simple [TS]

00:37:29   and Khushi like preventing you [TS]

00:37:31   the death of human being what we [TS]

00:37:33   probably have to assume that if he keeps [TS]

00:37:35   on you know helping people commit [TS]

00:37:37   suicide rather than preventing them from [TS]

00:37:38   committing suicide that he wouldn't be [TS]

00:37:40   assigned such a interesting duties may [TS]

00:37:43   be going to like savor hats or something [TS]

00:37:45   it doesn't give you a whole lot of [TS]

00:37:46   regard for what the the senior angels [TS]

00:37:49   think of Jimmy Stewart's character if [TS]

00:37:52   they send out this loose [TS]

00:37:53   exactly and number of just say I get the [TS]

00:37:56   sense that their hands are tied almost [TS]

00:37:57   you know it's like it's been having [TS]

00:37:58   bureaucracy device land it is within [TS]

00:38:00   your not exactly think they go on the [TS]

00:38:02   seniority system unfortunately it's a [TS]

00:38:04   last in first out sort of thing [TS]

00:38:06   Clarence's number is up so you get [TS]

00:38:08   Clarence sorry he's the next up it's his [TS]

00:38:12   case by the way clouds if you screw this [TS]

00:38:15   one up we cast you into purgatory for [TS]

00:38:18   all that no pressha let us place it's a [TS]

00:38:23   wonderful life as we are not surprised [TS]

00:38:25   at all [TS]

00:38:26   we will place it in the vault of [TS]

00:38:27   excellent holiday movies I think that's [TS]

00:38:29   a great a great selection and I'm glad [TS]

00:38:32   we didn't spend an hour talking about [TS]

00:38:33   white Christmas Steve let's what do you [TS]

00:38:36   have for us [TS]

00:38:37   well I'm actually quite glad that I got [TS]

00:38:39   to go before you because I have a [TS]

00:38:41   suspicion that we might have picked the [TS]

00:38:42   same thing one thing I was realizing [TS]

00:38:45   when I was digging through the endless [TS]

00:38:47   numbers of top 20 greatest christmas [TS]

00:38:50   movie list online to try and refresh my [TS]

00:38:53   memory is that I I i seem to think that [TS]

00:38:58   there are a lot of classic holiday films [TS]

00:39:00   but when I actually sit down and look at [TS]

00:39:02   the ones that that i've seen over the [TS]

00:39:04   years there really aren't that many that [TS]

00:39:06   are that great me a lot of them are you [TS]

00:39:09   you really only love because you [TS]

00:39:11   remember seeing a million times when you [TS]

00:39:13   were a kid like I could die get throw I [TS]

00:39:15   here without a Santa Claus out the [TS]

00:39:17   window now in and never think of it [TS]

00:39:20   again the end and then he was bothered [TS]

00:39:23   it but when I was a kid man I love that [TS]

00:39:25   the the heat miser song in the cold my [TS]

00:39:28   song and and and then I went back into [TS]

00:39:30   whoa these are not could and most of the [TS]

00:39:33   rankin/bass stop motions it into that [TS]

00:39:36   category for me you're not great but at [TS]

00:39:39   the same time like [TS]

00:39:40   those specials I will always watch those [TS]

00:39:41   specials if they're on this because it's [TS]

00:39:43   it's one of those things you know like [TS]

00:39:45   the movies that you watch when your kid [TS]

00:39:47   and even though you can kind of admit [TS]

00:39:48   they're not great right now there's one [TS]

00:39:51   to have on the background while you set [TS]

00:39:52   the table [TS]

00:39:53   I agree with that Rudolph is a good one [TS]

00:39:56   yeah it's diminishing returns with the [TS]

00:39:58   rank about all finish I i will get rid [TS]

00:40:00   off good issue status but then in the [TS]

00:40:03   song what happened is that all the other [TS]

00:40:05   Rangers in his peer group shunned him [TS]

00:40:08   which is of course I just what happens [TS]

00:40:09   and you know school kids that they're [TS]

00:40:11   mean but in the canvas special it was [TS]

00:40:14   the authority figure the coach of the [TS]

00:40:16   reindeer games [TS]

00:40:17   who said and now I think we all agree [TS]

00:40:18   that she can't play in any reindeer [TS]

00:40:21   games like Lester that is the primary [TS]

00:40:23   you're supposed to be the authority [TS]

00:40:24   figure here sir [TS]

00:40:26   that's why they gave you the little hat [TS]

00:40:27   and the whistle jerk [TS]

00:40:29   so Steve we didn't actually get to your [TS]

00:40:33   selection [TS]

00:40:33   this is true i got off on a bit of a [TS]

00:40:35   tangent there Michael and does that [TS]

00:40:37   surprise is non rankin/bass but it is [TS]

00:40:41   someone in the tape same time frame it [TS]

00:40:43   is of course the classic first peanuts [TS]

00:40:45   especially charlie brown christmas are [TS]

00:40:47   from 1965 I would never talk about [TS]

00:40:51   movies that would have been my pic that [TS]

00:40:52   is that is the one that that is the one [TS]

00:40:55   to end the most eves cheating basically [TS]

00:40:57   no I think he said holiday don't want to [TS]

00:40:58   leave your your-your-your the officials [TS]

00:41:01   are your dad we go back and look at i'm [TS]

00:41:02   gonna i'm going to allow it in the [TS]

00:41:04   spirit of the holiday [TS]

00:41:06   oh yeah i know god bless us everyone and [TS]

00:41:10   the moderators hurt grew three sizes [TS]

00:41:12   that a Scrooge is reformed quick Steve [TS]

00:41:16   run out and get it get that turkey in [TS]

00:41:18   the window down the street and bring it [TS]

00:41:20   back and then tell us more about Charlie [TS]

00:41:21   Brown you lovely lad [TS]

00:41:23   yes I mean what's not to love about a [TS]

00:41:25   charlie brown christmas it's so it's so [TS]

00:41:28   simple and so sweet and so weird I mean [TS]

00:41:32   there are so many elements piled [TS]

00:41:34   together there that just really should [TS]

00:41:35   not work mean that the animation is [TS]

00:41:38   terrible you know that I guess they were [TS]

00:41:41   on a real shoestring budget make they [TS]

00:41:43   couldn't really afford to do a decent [TS]

00:41:44   job on it and apparently bill melendez [TS]

00:41:46   several years later was kind of [TS]

00:41:47   embarrassed by it but Schultz wouldn't [TS]

00:41:49   let him go back and fix it that the [TS]

00:41:51   voice acting is you notice that sort of [TS]

00:41:54   halting you know it's real kids for a [TS]

00:41:57   change which I guess was unusual at the [TS]

00:41:58   time was very and no and just like that [TS]

00:42:02   we played Sally couldn't even read so [TS]

00:42:03   they had to feed her one line at a time [TS]

00:42:05   it and it shows [TS]

00:42:06   yeah and then just you know the [TS]

00:42:09   weirdness of the plot the fact that the [TS]

00:42:11   the Christmas play seems to consist of [TS]

00:42:13   them dancing and and Lucy's not at all [TS]

00:42:17   bothered by that sheet looks to Charlie [TS]

00:42:20   Brown and says is this a great play I [TS]

00:42:21   mean it's all it's just strange and then [TS]

00:42:24   you put together the garage as music [TS]

00:42:26   there which is wonderful and its own [TS]

00:42:28   right but you would never think it would [TS]

00:42:30   fit with the rest of the peanuts sort of [TS]

00:42:34   environment and yet it all works on such [TS]

00:42:38   such a strange level and it's feminist [TS]

00:42:40   mesmerizing and it said and it's I mean [TS]

00:42:47   it it's just that is so so earnest and [TS]

00:42:50   so sweet and you know it's strange that [TS]

00:42:54   you know I've I've lived my whole life [TS]

00:42:56   as a as an unwashed even and yet for [TS]

00:42:59   some reason [TS]

00:43:00   Linus gets on that stage and says lights [TS]

00:43:03   please and lays out with that gospel of [TS]

00:43:04   luke man it moves be in a weird way [TS]

00:43:08   because it's so well done and then and [TS]

00:43:11   then of course charlie brown afterwards [TS]

00:43:12   it's the first time I think you may have [TS]

00:43:15   ever seen charlie brown with sort of a a [TS]

00:43:17   wash of peace is over this free because [TS]

00:43:20   he has that little smile and he walks [TS]

00:43:22   out with his tree and it is immediately [TS]

00:43:24   dashed of course because that's just [TS]

00:43:26   charlie brown's lot in life but yeah [TS]

00:43:29   it's just it's just a lovely film it's [TS]

00:43:31   strange to me to that because it's so [TS]

00:43:33   slow and and kind of odd and weirdly [TS]

00:43:36   paste you would expect the modern child [TS]

00:43:39   to to still enjoy it but I i plot my [TS]

00:43:42   kids down in front of it last year and [TS]

00:43:45   we watched again this year and they just [TS]

00:43:46   aren't all my kids love it too and I [TS]

00:43:49   didn't think they would I got it and [TS]

00:43:50   what I was hopeful but I was waiting for [TS]

00:43:52   my my hopes to be dashed and the fact is [TS]

00:43:55   they think it's they think all the [TS]

00:43:56   peanuts specials are great and they love [TS]

00:43:58   Charlie Brown Christmas and I'm that [TS]

00:44:00   makes me very happy that that that 40 [TS]

00:44:02   years later basically it's still works [TS]

00:44:05   it's still getting it done they work [TS]

00:44:07   the the kids because they like you think [TS]

00:44:09   because it relates to its it slower [TS]

00:44:11   paced it's more gentle [TS]

00:44:13   it's got voices that sound like there's [TS]

00:44:15   I think there's something about it is [TS]

00:44:17   really relatable and Snoopy is also [TS]

00:44:19   really funny [TS]

00:44:20   sure don't forget Snoopy Snoopy Snoopy [TS]

00:44:23   kills even now he is old one and that's [TS]

00:44:25   one of the few films where he doesn't [TS]

00:44:26   have an extended scene where he's you [TS]

00:44:28   know playing hockey year you know doing [TS]

00:44:31   his world war one flying ace thing which [TS]

00:44:32   I think they relied on a bit too heavily [TS]

00:44:34   on the ice skates and dances I mean what [TS]

00:44:37   we have to ask for your gonna be really [TS]

00:44:39   brief interludes it doesn't occupy a 10 [TS]

00:44:41   minutes like already short special so so [TS]

00:44:44   what the things that struck me about [TS]

00:44:46   this and I i think i may have expanded [TS]

00:44:48   on the mend some other podcast in a [TS]

00:44:49   parallel universe this week but the the [TS]

00:44:54   you mentioned Steve I i I'm not a [TS]

00:44:56   religious person really but but i like [TS]

00:44:59   the scene with Linus doing the reading [TS]

00:45:01   it because you know it is Christmas that [TS]

00:45:03   is the source of the holiday and to [TS]

00:45:05   treat it with respect and and and not [TS]

00:45:10   shy away from that i like it i like i [TS]

00:45:12   like the honesty of it and the end the [TS]

00:45:14   clarity of it and I I'm not sure that a [TS]

00:45:17   show on a network today would do that [TS]

00:45:21   wouldn't want to do it [TS]

00:45:22   yeah they didn't want to listen and [TS]

00:45:24   networks hated that idea they didn't [TS]

00:45:26   especially skiing on the black diamond [TS]

00:45:28   course there [TS]

00:45:29   yeah because it's not only would not [TS]

00:45:31   only do they have will have to fight to [TS]

00:45:32   get that in but also it would be so easy [TS]

00:45:35   to turn that into proselytizing I say [TS]

00:45:38   now I'm going to where we are today this [TS]

00:45:40   is not an xmas so this is not a holiday [TS]

00:45:42   special this is a Christmas special [TS]

00:45:43   jesus is the reason for the season hits [TS]

00:45:46   this but this is exist exactly it's [TS]

00:45:49   exactly what Linus was feeling at that [TS]

00:45:51   moment so you're talking about Linus's [TS]

00:45:53   feelings are not necessarily the [TS]

00:45:55   feelings of what everybody should be [TS]

00:45:56   going thinking at that moment and it [TS]

00:45:59   really is one of those moments where if [TS]

00:46:01   someone has an opposition to that i'm [TS]

00:46:05   not i wouldn't judge them based on that [TS]

00:46:07   thing but i'd be more curious as to why [TS]

00:46:09   they have an opposition to that scene [TS]

00:46:11   then I would be wondering about that [TS]

00:46:13   scene itself [TS]

00:46:14   well i was gonna say something similar [TS]

00:46:16   and just there's a there's a great quote [TS]

00:46:18   from Charles Schulz about that where he [TS]

00:46:20   was fighting with that [TS]

00:46:21   executives and he's like well we don't [TS]

00:46:23   show them the true meaning of Christmas [TS]

00:46:24   then who the hell will [TS]

00:46:26   haha so so so the other thing in this [TS]

00:46:30   that similarly I think you could get [TS]

00:46:32   away with today at least not in the way [TS]

00:46:34   it's handled this this is still peanuts [TS]

00:46:37   right and so Charlie Brown has terrible [TS]

00:46:39   things happen to him but it's the it's [TS]

00:46:41   the anti-consumerist message which is [TS]

00:46:45   which is you know that this isn't and [TS]

00:46:48   they go hand in hand right because it's [TS]

00:46:49   like this is what this holiday is [TS]

00:46:50   supposed to be about and i love that and [TS]

00:46:53   after having coca-cola well that's [TS]

00:46:55   that's what I was like the Charlie Brown [TS]

00:46:56   all that special brought to you by macys [TS]

00:46:59   records but and yet and gallery [TS]

00:47:01   Madison's neck when you buy it for 999 [TS]

00:47:03   on itunes there were no commercials well [TS]

00:47:05   and now you can buy the Charlie Brown [TS]

00:47:07   tree to you can with the commercial [TS]

00:47:09   Charlie Brown tree you know this right [TS]

00:47:12   yes [TS]

00:47:13   yeah it's all over the internet but but [TS]

00:47:15   be that as it may if we do if you look [TS]

00:47:17   at the work spot I one of those things i [TS]

00:47:19   like about it is that Sally basically [TS]

00:47:21   says just give me I just want what's [TS]

00:47:23   coming to be just reminding their sugar [TS]

00:47:25   yeah exactly that's what I've got coming [TS]

00:47:27   to me yeah amazing i could probably [TS]

00:47:30   recite that film line for more although [TS]

00:47:34   there is no better line in that in that [TS]

00:47:36   special and when sure me says every [TS]

00:47:38   Christmas it's the same i always end up [TS]

00:47:41   playing a shepherd because every [TS]

00:47:43   Christmas it's the second but he still [TS]

00:47:46   gets to play the Shepherd every year i [TS]

00:47:48   think maybe you know this is the year he [TS]

00:47:49   gets to play the baby Jesus know [TS]

00:47:51   Sherman's Shepherd again always the [TS]

00:47:54   shepherd [TS]

00:47:54   hey Jason yeah yeah but we've all been [TS]

00:47:56   talking about our favorite movies and I [TS]

00:47:59   don't know that seems a little selfish [TS]

00:48:00   now to me that we spent always been [TS]

00:48:01   talking and what is the season sharing i [TS]

00:48:04   know but in this you know we should ask [TS]

00:48:05   you what do you think what's your [TS]

00:48:07   favorite holiday [TS]

00:48:07   what I'm curious why Steve thought that [TS]

00:48:10   I was going to choose charlie brown [TS]

00:48:12   christmas is it because I drafted [TS]

00:48:13   Charlie Brown and RDC character-driven [TS]

00:48:15   well i'm going to choose the team and [TS]

00:48:18   special with this Christmas know which [TS]

00:48:22   is which is just hit netflix streaming [TS]

00:48:24   by the way as lacking out during [TS]

00:48:27   christmas by the power of grayskull know [TS]

00:48:32   louisiana Lisa it's so we mentioned it [TS]

00:48:36   already and I this is a movie that I had [TS]

00:48:38   never seen before my wife exposed to me [TS]

00:48:41   because it was one of her favorites and [TS]

00:48:43   it is now one of mine if not my favorite [TS]

00:48:46   which is Miracle on thirty-fourth Street [TS]

00:48:48   em the originally ok we have to david [TS]

00:48:50   hart no Maureen O'Hara edmund gwenn [TS]

00:48:53   Natalie Wood is a little girl I love [TS]

00:48:57   this movie [TS]

00:48:58   the dylan mcdermott remake no no that's [TS]

00:49:01   been remade so many times good accept no [TS]

00:49:04   substitutes watch the original don't [TS]

00:49:06   even watch the colorized version of the [TS]

00:49:07   original watch the original [TS]

00:49:08   black-and-white be and it is a classic [TS]

00:49:10   and it does not need to be made again [TS]

00:49:12   because it's time the way it is in fact [TS]

00:49:14   that performance by edmund gwenn the [TS]

00:49:16   English actor who came to Hollywood late [TS]

00:49:18   in life and made this movie and won an [TS]

00:49:20   Oscar for Best Supporting Actor his [TS]

00:49:22   performance is so great you know i love [TS]

00:49:25   this movie I think there's a theme [TS]

00:49:27   running through a lot of these movies [TS]

00:49:28   where they have something about them [TS]

00:49:30   that is that sets them apart that's a [TS]

00:49:32   little bit strange a little bit skewed [TS]

00:49:33   and it's not treacly it's not sappy mean [TS]

00:49:36   obviously at the heart of Miracle on [TS]

00:49:38   thirty-fourth Street is this story of [TS]

00:49:40   you know it's not like a heartwarming [TS]

00:49:41   family story and there's a believe in [TS]

00:49:43   Santa Claus kind of story and the [TS]

00:49:45   importance of family but it's also like [TS]

00:49:47   a wacky courtroom drama where with where [TS]

00:49:51   there's sort of satirizing the political [TS]

00:49:55   aspects of Santa Claus there's William [TS]

00:49:58   Frawley who was fred mertz on I Love [TS]

00:50:00   Lucy plays a political operative who [TS]

00:50:03   advises the judge each option of this [TS]

00:50:05   movie isnot is I think the highlight of [TS]

00:50:08   the film from yes adding at the judge [TS]

00:50:10   that the whole just because there's the [TS]

00:50:12   sham of a court proceeding involving [TS]

00:50:15   Santa closet and a whole thing comes off [TS]

00:50:18   basically because of the publicity of [TS]

00:50:21   the judge and his advisor is Fred Mertz [TS]

00:50:23   but don't you feel for that judge that [TS]

00:50:26   the way out what the way the movie [TS]

00:50:27   outlines his position to say that [TS]

00:50:29   well of course this guy's not CSIS he [TS]

00:50:31   says he's Santa Claus he really should [TS]

00:50:33   this should be a close quarter which is [TS]

00:50:35   just committed like three seconds but if [TS]

00:50:37   there's so much attention now that if i [TS]

00:50:39   do this odd Christmas Eve I'll be the [TS]

00:50:41   idiot who sent Santa Claus to jail on [TS]

00:50:44   Christmas [TS]

00:50:45   yes it is Lord delivered me from this [TS]

00:50:48   let this cup pass from me as Edwards and [TS]

00:50:51   when all these letters start dumping on [TS]

00:50:52   his father's a lot of his bed just like [TS]

00:50:54   thank god I've got a lame excuse to [TS]

00:50:57   dismiss this case and I'm gonna take a [TS]

00:50:59   strike Fred Mertz as has stepped in and [TS]

00:51:02   helped him out [TS]

00:51:03   yeah and and they put the they put the [TS]

00:51:06   district attorney's son on this [TS]

00:51:09   yeah that's your daddy it's just it's so [TS]

00:51:17   so you know I mean there's other great [TS]

00:51:19   stuff here where there's the drunk Santa [TS]

00:51:21   he's kicked out oh you say it comes in [TS]

00:51:24   and he he upsets people [TS]

00:51:25   it says something about actually there's [TS]

00:51:27   an interesting whole bit in here about [TS]

00:51:29   good customer service which again it's [TS]

00:51:31   like what a strange thing to be a movie [TS]

00:51:33   but the idea that that it's like Santa [TS]

00:51:36   and Miracle on thirty-fourth Street is [TS]

00:51:37   like the original genius from the genius [TS]

00:51:40   bar at Apple hehe basically gets these [TS]

00:51:42   questions and he says well no we don't [TS]

00:51:46   have that here but i'll tell you where [TS]

00:51:47   you can get that you can get that across [TS]

00:51:49   the street at Gimbels they have it and [TS]

00:51:50   it's a pretty good deal you should go [TS]

00:51:51   over there and and his supervised like [TS]

00:51:54   what no we can't do that and it and then [TS]

00:51:56   all of a sudden I think mr. Macy [TS]

00:51:58   realized to say wait a second [TS]

00:51:59   people are coming here now because they [TS]

00:52:00   trust us because they know will tell the [TS]

00:52:02   truth even if we don't have what what [TS]

00:52:05   they go what I will tell you that this [TS]

00:52:06   was the founding you remember i worked [TS]

00:52:08   at amazon the early days this was [TS]

00:52:10   practically the founding principle [TS]

00:52:11   amazon was that was the American 30 [TS]

00:52:14   registers on it was that your [TS]

00:52:16   authoritative people think they can come [TS]

00:52:18   to you and find not only what you need [TS]

00:52:20   but what you don't have and as long as [TS]

00:52:22   they believe that they don't go anywhere [TS]

00:52:23   else right well the the idea that if we [TS]

00:52:26   don't have it will tell you where you [TS]

00:52:27   can get instant instead of playing dumb [TS]

00:52:29   and hoping you buy something that you [TS]

00:52:30   don't really want and and yeah but [TS]

00:52:34   that's a whole that's a whole thread in [TS]

00:52:36   this movie too so there's just a lot of [TS]

00:52:37   interesting and strange stuff that's all [TS]

00:52:40   mashed together and there's the is that [TS]

00:52:42   Alan Young who's the who's the guy who I [TS]

00:52:45   I forget who it is but they there's the [TS]

00:52:47   kriss kringle promises the little girl [TS]

00:52:50   house and then at the end and there's a [TS]

00:52:52   house in the countryside and we just [TS]

00:52:54   driving along is like it's all [TS]

00:52:55   Palestinians it's there it is and now [TS]

00:52:59   ok this is a for-sale wait a second [TS]

00:53:00   that's his cane [TS]

00:53:02   yeah because they do the whole he's not [TS]

00:53:04   magic really he's just a crazy old man [TS]

00:53:05   or is he right I didn't do such a [TS]

00:53:08   wonderful four walls [TS]

00:53:10   oh so so I you know I I really do love [TS]

00:53:14   this movie so I will you know this is a [TS]

00:53:16   shows the sensibility that I i have in [TS]

00:53:19   were in marrying mary my wife who has [TS]

00:53:22   such good taste and holiday movies that [TS]

00:53:23   I I do really love Miracle on [TS]

00:53:25   thirty-fourth Street because it is that [TS]

00:53:27   great mixture of kind of oddball weird [TS]

00:53:30   courtroom drama and there's that there [TS]

00:53:32   is the the mail room or whatever that's [TS]

00:53:34   the boiler room kind of terrible place [TS]

00:53:36   and there's just great stuff in it so so [TS]

00:53:38   Miracle on thirty-fourth Street that's [TS]

00:53:40   my selection with some of the best [TS]

00:53:41   holiday movies the ones that are totally [TS]

00:53:43   not self-conscious about themselves or [TS]

00:53:45   that there's no need to explain anything [TS]

00:53:47   this no need to be terribly hip there [TS]

00:53:50   okay was simply saying yep it's move [TS]

00:53:52   about Santa Claus no please not this is [TS]

00:53:55   not gonna be a secret twist at the end [TS]

00:53:56   where turns out that he actually is [TS]

00:53:57   crazy but everybody decides to fall [TS]

00:53:59   behind because he's such a good Santa [TS]

00:54:00   Claus it really is a Santa Claus you [TS]

00:54:02   have to deal with that we decided to [TS]

00:54:04   make a movie that will leave you smiling [TS]

00:54:05   instead of puzzle isn't a little bit [TS]

00:54:07   tortured yeah yeah exactly right that it [TS]

00:54:10   is a movie about a guy who is Santa [TS]

00:54:12   Claus and and he teaches a lot of people [TS]

00:54:15   little lessons along the way and then [TS]

00:54:17   there's crazy courtroom antics you well [TS]

00:54:20   for me it's the epitome of just the [TS]

00:54:22   perfect Christmas mobile because it's so [TS]

00:54:24   it's so earnest and it's so earnest that [TS]

00:54:27   it makes you smile rather like you know [TS]

00:54:29   there's somewhere it's like oh yeah [TS]

00:54:30   where were being a little hammy you know [TS]

00:54:33   get get in the Christmas spirit and this [TS]

00:54:35   one is just like no let's let's show the [TS]

00:54:38   Macy's parade [TS]

00:54:40   let's be adorable and sell it a hundred [TS]

00:54:43   and ten percent Jason can give out [TS]

00:54:45   shoutouts for honorary nominee yes I was [TS]

00:54:47   going I was going to say now that we've [TS]

00:54:49   each had a pic i want to i want to say [TS]

00:54:51   what did we miss [TS]

00:54:52   what what should we mentioned before we [TS]

00:54:53   go that that we didn't mention yeah we [TS]

00:54:56   have to we have to mention die hard [TS]

00:54:58   because Stan word is not on the podcast [TS]

00:54:59   every resource yes yeah and I heart is a [TS]

00:55:03   great film and we did a whole podcast [TS]

00:55:05   about die hard so dip into the archives [TS]

00:55:07   back to December 2010 and you can find [TS]

00:55:10   our entire podcast about I'll [TS]

00:55:12   our languages which is a Christmas movie [TS]

00:55:13   it is strange that is it is a Christmas [TS]

00:55:16   movie it is possibly best adult [TS]

00:55:18   christmas movie [TS]

00:55:21   oh now I have a machine gun yes no [TS]

00:55:24   there's a better adult christmas movie [TS]

00:55:26   which would be bad santa which I don't [TS]

00:55:29   know if I can watch I'll give a [TS]

00:55:30   shout-out to but it's like that's it's a [TS]

00:55:32   funny strange horrible horrible film and [TS]

00:55:35   I don't know if I can ever watch the [TS]

00:55:36   second time but wow it's it's something [TS]

00:55:39   also for including TV shows i have to [TS]

00:55:43   push out to the sctv christmas special [TS]

00:55:46   wow we're gonna have we're just Johnny [TS]

00:55:49   Larew he has that there are two great [TS]

00:55:51   stories out of it one of which is Johnny [TS]

00:55:54   LaRue has to it is at this the whole [TS]

00:55:56   thing is around the biggest CCTV Network [TS]

00:55:58   like Christmas party but John Luke and [TS]

00:56:00   like stay and drink and smoke and he [TS]

00:56:02   wants to because the station manager [TS]

00:56:04   sending him out to do like a special [TS]

00:56:05   Christmas treat be free just like walk [TS]

00:56:07   down the street and interviews like [TS]

00:56:09   people who are just like on the street [TS]

00:56:11   on Christmas Eve late at night doing [TS]

00:56:12   nothing and he said he's drunk and he's [TS]

00:56:17   drinking even more and just winds up [TS]

00:56:18   like alone because the camera crew like [TS]

00:56:20   it's easy it's also the camera crew once [TS]

00:56:22   too often so he's just there sitting in [TS]

00:56:24   the middle of the snow on the sidewalk [TS]

00:56:25   with a boom mic to speaking into it it's [TS]

00:56:28   I had Talent [TS]

00:56:31   I had salad ever tell you this little [TS]

00:56:33   bigger [TS]

00:56:34   all I wanted was a crane shot by the [TS]

00:56:37   caviar is it chief scape and then this [TS]

00:56:40   is going to put this the Christmas magic [TS]

00:56:42   like that glorious like celestial music [TS]

00:56:43   ahead the camera like pics itself [TS]

00:56:46   opposite [TS]

00:56:47   well who are you I'm Santa what's this [TS]

00:56:50   why it's your crane shot Johnny and [TS]

00:56:53   their full back to see a beautiful like [TS]

00:56:55   huge Chapman crane wrapped in christmas [TS]

00:56:57   lights and the backstories even funnier [TS]

00:57:00   because I will get the vocoder all the [TS]

00:57:02   details would take a long time to [TS]

00:57:04   explain but essentially John Candy to [TS]

00:57:07   get back at the producers had [TS]

00:57:08   intentionally written the most expensive [TS]

00:57:11   sketch that would do that today with the [TS]

00:57:14   this series would ever film not by [TS]

00:57:16   saying oh and there's 8,000 pounds of [TS]

00:57:18   real goals you have to get us that he [TS]

00:57:20   found every trick to make sure that it [TS]

00:57:23   would [TS]

00:57:23   as much as possible including knowing [TS]

00:57:25   there was only one Chapman crane and in [TS]

00:57:28   Canada that they have to really get it [TS]

00:57:30   on a flatbed that have to also pay for [TS]

00:57:32   the person who operated just they could [TS]

00:57:34   use it as a prop in this sketch but is [TS]

00:57:37   it was a great skills a great sketch [TS]

00:57:39   start to finish but does this idea of [TS]

00:57:41   John Candy knowing that I just cost of [TS]

00:57:43   production eighteen thousand dollars [TS]

00:57:45   more than they thought they were going [TS]

00:57:46   to spend on this five-minute of comedy [TS]

00:57:47   piece i am a happy John Candy of this [TS]

00:57:50   night really quick for talking christmas [TS]

00:57:52   TV specials are not necessarily specials [TS]

00:57:54   but Christmas TV shows pretty much all [TS]

00:57:56   of Aaron circus shows have wonderful [TS]

00:57:59   wonderful Christmas episodes [TS]

00:58:00   there's a sort of you yeah and one in [TS]

00:58:03   particular if for people who have [TS]

00:58:05   watched the west wing is no well which [TS]

00:58:07   is deals with one of the characters [TS]

00:58:09   post-traumatic stress disorder over an [TS]

00:58:11   event that i will not mention because it [TS]

00:58:13   will spoil the show for people who [TS]

00:58:15   haven't watched the show and if you [TS]

00:58:16   haven't watched the show [TS]

00:58:18   what's wrong with you go watch it but [TS]

00:58:20   anyway Aaron Sorkin shows great with [TS]

00:58:22   christmas specials pisses me off that [TS]

00:58:24   we're all shying away from mentioning a [TS]

00:58:26   christmas story because TBS had to ruin [TS]

00:58:28   it by overexposing it i love watching [TS]

00:58:30   the hundred million times ten years ago [TS]

00:58:33   every one of us would probably have set [TS]

00:58:35   a christmas story maybe not everyone but [TS]

00:58:37   a good many of us because it is [TS]

00:58:39   absolutely fantastic film that's good [TS]

00:58:42   but yes i still have my cry actually [TS]

00:58:44   have a Christmas Day tradition where I i [TS]

00:58:47   spend the entire day like driving all [TS]

00:58:49   over creation visiting friends and [TS]

00:58:51   family but i will like to have Christmas [TS]

00:58:53   breakfast and then i will go home and [TS]

00:58:55   then spend two hours wrapping gifts [TS]

00:58:57   while watching the Christmas story [TS]

00:58:58   probably exactly 1.78 times as it loops [TS]

00:59:02   around and then loaded blend i love my [TS]

00:59:05   car up with freshly rep presence and [TS]

00:59:06   make make my tour and so they would not [TS]

00:59:08   be Christmas without a Christmas story [TS]

00:59:10   in the morning it's a you know I haven't [TS]

00:59:13   like actual broadcaster cable whatever [TS]

00:59:15   television for years so Christmas story [TS]

00:59:17   now seems fresh to me is that we own the [TS]

00:59:19   DVD so we could be sure to watch and [TS]

00:59:21   we've lost its terrible things that we [TS]

00:59:23   have to do something drastic to get it [TS]

00:59:25   back at the bite easy bothered by the [TS]

00:59:27   moms eighties hair that's all that's the [TS]

00:59:29   only for the problems we love that move [TS]

00:59:30   old Ralphie wrong my terrible admission [TS]

00:59:34   is that I've never seen more than the [TS]

00:59:35   first [TS]

00:59:36   10 minutes of that film but yeah what [TS]

00:59:39   yeah we're you raised by the same wolves [TS]

00:59:42   that raised Jason where he didn't see [TS]

00:59:44   that it's a wonderful life and America [TS]

00:59:46   on thirty-fourth Street until like five [TS]

00:59:47   years ago just hadn't seen him home [TS]

00:59:49   alone right Jason I've seen I've seen [TS]

00:59:52   home alone 3 right but never the [TS]

00:59:54   internet doesn't count which blows my [TS]

00:59:57   mind I'm one of only about 55 people [TS]

00:59:57   mind I'm one of only about 55 people [TS]

01:00:00   the North America who were alive in the [TS]

01:00:01   in the nineteen eighties who did not see [TS]

01:00:03   home alone [TS]

01:00:04   I've got your home alone i escaped the [TS]

01:00:06   i'm not saying that either the patrol on [TS]

01:00:09   my legs I was actually considering [TS]

01:00:10   mentioning all alone because it's it's [TS]

01:00:12   very good read on it that's an honorable [TS]

01:00:15   mention alone that blows my mind but [TS]

01:00:17   I've seen home alone 3 know it Scarlett [TS]

01:00:20   Johansson assistants are you saying that [TS]

01:00:22   like it helps [TS]

01:00:23   please don't oh ok what else did we miss [TS]

01:00:29   anything on holiday holiday is not he [TS]

01:00:31   actually mentioned briefly before [TS]

01:00:33   holiday inn is too has a Christmas seen [TS]

01:00:35   and it's not a traditional Christmas [TS]

01:00:36   movie but there's something very [TS]

01:00:37   Christmasy about what's the hotel chain [TS]

01:00:39   named for the film it is yes it is it is [TS]

01:00:42   it's and it's a it's the the plot is [TS]

01:00:45   that Bing Crosby is you know wants to [TS]

01:00:46   open all these what's with this and all [TS]

01:00:49   these invested almost be opening a chain [TS]

01:00:51   of hotels he wants to open a country [TS]

01:00:52   hotel in the wilds of Connecticut as far [TS]

01:00:54   away as Greenwich i believe from New [TS]

01:00:56   York City that's already open on my [TS]

01:00:59   holidays [TS]

01:01:00   yeah it's only open on holidays all open [TS]

01:01:02   once a supper club open once a month [TS]

01:01:04   right and so every Berlin has the stout [TS]

01:01:06   challenge of having to come up with a [TS]

01:01:08   song for every holiday every month of [TS]

01:01:11   interesting part is if you watch it you [TS]

01:01:13   get two versions one has lincoln's [TS]

01:01:16   birthday and wondrous Monica's breakfast [TS]

01:01:18   ham Abraham it's their terrifying [TS]

01:01:23   wow it's like face and you know it used [TS]

01:01:26   to be it's really it was acceptable once [TS]

01:01:28   apparently so anyway but it's a great [TS]

01:01:30   film but sometimes you see that scene [TS]

01:01:32   sometimes you don't see that [TS]

01:01:33   wait a minute it's a blackface tribute [TS]

01:01:36   to Abraham Lincoln i'm not getting you [TS]

01:01:38   is like in crosby in full like you know [TS]

01:01:42   in full blackface while and the female [TS]

01:01:45   lead in this or riffic female black face [TS]

01:01:50   character that it's like it's like it's [TS]

01:01:53   might even when i'm even if you can see [TS]

01:01:55   it on youtube but even on youtube but [TS]

01:01:57   I've got my springtime for Hitler face [TS]

01:01:59   on like that audience reaction it's [TS]

01:02:01   either they're african-american [TS]

01:02:03   characters in the two and they sing [TS]

01:02:04   along and they sing about the darkies [TS]

01:02:06   and it's like it's it's a product of its [TS]

01:02:08   time so if you see the movie i recommend [TS]

01:02:11   not saying that seen the judge [TS]

01:02:13   it's like just like a forest areas [TS]

01:02:16   bojangles hormone Harlem number in the [TS]

01:02:19   swing time was it uh you could at least [TS]

01:02:21   say okay he's not he's he's wearing [TS]

01:02:25   theatrical we eat you want to give them [TS]

01:02:27   out for this so you can torturously say [TS]

01:02:29   okay he's wearing theatrical makeup as [TS]

01:02:32   opposed to what is more constricted mark [TS]

01:02:34   invent more stereotypical black face [TS]

01:02:37   he's also doing a tribute to I known [TS]

01:02:40   dancer and also he's dancing the style [TS]

01:02:42   of one of his mentors who also was an [TS]

01:02:44   african-american i'm willing to sort of [TS]

01:02:46   give him a free pass on that on that [TS]

01:02:48   basis this number any holiday and with [TS]

01:02:51   Bing Crosby like ohmygod ohmygod ohmygod [TS]

01:02:54   ohmygod ohmygod it was culturally [TS]

01:02:56   appropriate in its time and requires a [TS]

01:02:59   disclaimer but it is a lovely film [TS]

01:03:00   despite that scene it is a lovely as we [TS]

01:03:02   film and it's a great film for the [TS]

01:03:03   holidays especially without the scene [TS]

01:03:05   one of the best things that film is at [TS]

01:03:06   the end of the film [TS]

01:03:07   I it's a big Crosby and uh who is the [TS]

01:03:12   co-star male the male co-stars some [TS]

01:03:13   research first trimester so Fred Astaire [TS]

01:03:16   goes to make a move your on the heavy by [TS]

01:03:18   the way he made yeah i'm fred astaire [TS]

01:03:19   decides that make a movie of bing [TS]

01:03:21   crosby's experience and so in the film [TS]

01:03:23   there's a bit with a pullback and you [TS]

01:03:25   see that there's a set of the holiday n [TS]

01:03:27   it's obviously the set they used in [TS]

01:03:29   making that part of the movie but now [TS]

01:03:31   it's being presented as a set that was [TS]

01:03:32   constructed in Hollywood to make a movie [TS]

01:03:34   about the experience and it's I just [TS]

01:03:36   love the craziness at and and and [TS]

01:03:39   incidentally they reuse that exact same [TS]

01:03:41   set for wed Christmas was originally not [TS]

01:03:45   seriously it it is the exact same set [TS]

01:03:48   that's the sweet because it's a ski [TS]

01:03:49   lodge if it's a long as you know if you [TS]

01:03:52   remember remember the scene where the [TS]

01:03:53   coat-check was that is like the [TS]

01:03:55   entranceway in holiday inn and white [TS]

01:03:58   Christmas word like I did all the action [TS]

01:04:00   happens [TS]

01:04:01   wow I i will i'll put in a brief word [TS]

01:04:03   for one of like the 80,000 doctor who [TS]

01:04:06   christmas specials that have now been [TS]

01:04:08   done in the in the last decade there [TS]

01:04:12   there there enjoyable at a they are [TS]

01:04:16   they're crafted to be watched as as [TS]

01:04:18   unlike in America in England one of the [TS]

01:04:20   most watched TV days of the air is [TS]

01:04:22   Christmas Day it is a part of a [TS]

01:04:23   tradition to turn on the TV after your [TS]

01:04:26   your roast is is out of the oven and [TS]

01:04:29   you've had your meal and then you switch [TS]

01:04:31   it over to the BBC or I TV and there are [TS]

01:04:34   specials on and the doctor who christmas [TS]

01:04:36   special which we've talked about on this [TS]

01:04:37   podcast are in general quite delightful [TS]

01:04:41   in that they're big and fun and not [TS]

01:04:44   meant to be they're meant to be watched [TS]

01:04:46   on a full stomach of Christmas roast and [TS]

01:04:50   to be enjoyed on that level and in fact [TS]

01:04:52   I would say the one from the one from [TS]

01:04:55   last year which was a which featured [TS]

01:04:57   michael gambon and as the screws like [TS]

01:05:00   character in A Christmas Carol where the [TS]

01:05:03   Christmas past Christmas future are all [TS]

01:05:05   determined by a a certain character who [TS]

01:05:08   has a time machine was was a very [TS]

01:05:10   Christmasy enjoyable episode and there [TS]

01:05:13   was also a shark that flies there was [TS]

01:05:15   that that had a great shot where the [TS]

01:05:19   doctors take it that the doctor is [TS]

01:05:20   showing like the the child version of [TS]

01:05:23   the of Scrooge to him and go so I'm [TS]

01:05:26   supposed to my heart as opposed to melt [TS]

01:05:28   when I see the innocent young lad that i [TS]

01:05:30   was was was not going to work [TS]

01:05:33   the title says no I'm showing i'm [TS]

01:05:35   showing the boy what a dick UT turn [TS]

01:05:37   starts growing up you just be quiet [TS]

01:05:41   really beautiful that's what I became a [TS]

01:05:43   doctor who fan of the new secret it's [TS]

01:05:45   good that's a great little bit yeah it's [TS]

01:05:48   it's a great twist on the on the [TS]

01:05:50   Christmas Carol that we hadn't seen its [TS]

01:05:52   not Groundhog Day mind you but a nice to [TS]

01:05:55   a nice twist and where you going to say [TS]

01:05:56   something oh well the only one on my [TS]

01:05:58   list that having been said so far now [TS]

01:06:01   that we've touched on home alone and the [TS]

01:06:03   fact that half of us haven't seen it [TS]

01:06:05   Are The Nightmare Before Christmas thank [TS]

01:06:08   yous just right and although it's it's a [TS]

01:06:11   quite a little bit of an earlier holiday [TS]

01:06:13   still falls in the holiday season is a [TS]

01:06:15   plane trains and automobiles with job i [TS]

01:06:19   still get a kick out of other it's [TS]

01:06:21   thanksgiving but let's just pretend it's [TS]

01:06:23   their holiday movies [TS]

01:06:25   yes yes oh yes go there you go that is [TS]

01:06:28   not day works then too [TS]

01:06:29   yeah yeah John Hughes I've got one more [TS]

01:06:32   which is again a a christmas carol story [TS]

01:06:37   which is Muppet Christmas Carol [TS]

01:06:39   Oh [TS]

01:06:40   no I can't get through the holidays [TS]

01:06:42   without watching that at least once and [TS]

01:06:44   I always pleasantly surprised to find [TS]

01:06:47   there are things that I've forgotten or [TS]

01:06:48   missed about it right now when I have [TS]

01:06:51   not yet seen which we're trying to watch [TS]

01:06:52   that was a good one of my children are [TS]

01:06:54   little sensitive and we were we were not [TS]

01:06:57   able to get past the ghost of christmas [TS]

01:06:59   past which is not that scary because [TS]

01:07:01   it's too terrifying to them so we're [TS]

01:07:03   working our way through it [TS]

01:07:04   Wow working your way through struggling [TS]

01:07:07   through the monthly curse around her [TS]

01:07:08   told my children are a little hothouse [TS]

01:07:09   flower they're lovely kids gentle and [TS]

01:07:12   sweet [TS]

01:07:13   wow already got to mention one more [TS]

01:07:15   because it has become an annual [TS]

01:07:16   tradition around my house and that is [TS]

01:07:18   the star wars holiday special with [TS]

01:07:21   rifftrax ah I've mentioned before but it [TS]

01:07:25   is i believe their finest hour a lot of [TS]

01:07:28   tracks are hit or miss this one is hit [TS]

01:07:31   all the way I and it's it that I think [TS]

01:07:34   the thing that's great about it is that [TS]

01:07:36   they they sound like they had a bit of [TS]

01:07:38   the knob what they cannot do that [TS]

01:07:40   because they're laughing a lot of each [TS]

01:07:42   other's jokes and it really adds they [TS]

01:07:44   they rip over the commercials which are [TS]

01:07:46   just the classic seventies commercials [TS]

01:07:49   and and they're just a ghast added and [TS]

01:07:53   and and it really works because you [TS]

01:07:55   can't help but be a gas that star wars [TS]

01:07:58   holiday special and otherwise you want [TS]

01:08:00   to say what one thing that I've always [TS]

01:08:01   thought about that that I think it's a [TS]

01:08:05   worse rap than it should just because [TS]

01:08:07   it's Star Wars I that kind of weird [TS]

01:08:11   variety special was not that unusual in [TS]

01:08:13   the seventies and and that the level of [TS]

01:08:16   badness to which that sinks [TS]

01:08:18   I don't think it's as bad as some of the [TS]

01:08:19   other ones that i recall seeing as a boy [TS]

01:08:21   you have to wonder if the star wars [TS]

01:08:23   holiday special would not have such a [TS]

01:08:24   place in lower if George Lucas had just [TS]

01:08:28   said alright it's here it is it's on DVD [TS]

01:08:30   you can get it [TS]

01:08:32   let's never speak of it again instead of [TS]

01:08:33   sort of hiding it away [TS]

01:08:35   it's probably the single piece of film [TS]

01:08:37   from that period that he was entirely [TS]

01:08:38   responsible for no help from lawrence [TS]

01:08:42   kasdan I i'll explain so much [TS]

01:08:45   well this has been great i think we've I [TS]

01:08:47   think we've covered a lot of really [TS]

01:08:49   excellent holiday fair that maybe we'll [TS]

01:08:51   give our list or some ideas of things [TS]

01:08:53   that they [TS]

01:08:54   watch over over the holiday season so [TS]

01:08:56   until next time when we will discuss oh [TS]

01:09:00   I don't know maybe a doctor who [TS]

01:09:01   christmas special something like that [TS]

01:09:03   I i would like to thank my guess Steve [TS]
