The Incomparable

47: Death Star University

00:00:00   sorry this is like twice as the [TS]

00:00:13   incomparable podcast number 47 july 2011 [TS]

00:00:21   we're back on the incomparable and yes [TS]

00:00:24   this is the second part of our epic [TS]

00:00:27   two-part discussion of Star Wars i will [TS]

00:00:31   continue to be joined by John siracusa [TS]

00:00:34   dan moore and Scott healthy and [TS]

00:00:36   recognized and let's pick up the [TS]

00:00:38   discussion so the millennium fawlcon [TS]

00:00:41   comes out of hyperspace and finds the [TS]

00:00:43   ruins of Alderaan also can i just say [TS]

00:00:47   how awesome it is when the million [TS]

00:00:48   fucking jump to Lightspeed that is the [TS]

00:00:49   moment you know of any moment in the [TS]

00:00:52   movie the one that might grab me was [TS]

00:00:53   like holy crap i wish i lived in this [TS]

00:00:55   universe the jump to light speed and [TS]

00:00:56   it's such a simple effect but so [TS]

00:00:58   affecting all the stars turning into [TS]

00:01:00   lines it looks so often but it's still [TS]

00:01:03   think it looks awesome [TS]

00:01:04   it still does look awesome you know what [TS]

00:01:06   makes it look awesome the twist at the [TS]

00:01:08   end and that doesn't go watch back it to [TS]

00:01:11   see that the magician's trick the slight [TS]

00:01:13   twist [TS]

00:01:13   that's what does it oh you mean when [TS]

00:01:15   they get from the perspective outside [TS]

00:01:16   when you seal it with a twist oh yeah [TS]

00:01:18   star your lawyers and they do a little [TS]

00:01:20   twist without the Swiss no good if you [TS]

00:01:22   ever played star raiders on the atari [TS]

00:01:24   8-bit you got to do it yourself at the [TS]

00:01:26   exact same effect slightly isolated you [TS]

00:01:29   need the sound and everything you need [TS]

00:01:31   and that the interior which looks so [TS]

00:01:32   real and the fact that you can do stars [TS]

00:01:34   and have them look real business [TS]

00:01:36   pinpoints of light that's just like the [TS]

00:01:37   perfect union of like what was possible [TS]

00:01:39   and what what's the coolest thing you [TS]

00:01:41   could do that would look a hundred [TS]

00:01:42   percent real and it was that affect [TS]

00:01:44   anyone you know I'm in my thirties now [TS]

00:01:46   and I still want i still want to jump to [TS]

00:01:48   Lightspeed that's all I'm saying [TS]

00:01:49   who wouldn't we all want you to jump to [TS]

00:01:52   Lightspeed but don't don't live on [TS]

00:01:54   Alderaan [TS]

00:01:56   I you know I hear that incidentally [TS]

00:01:59   though the real estate prices create [TS]

00:02:01   yeah you know you know what's good about [TS]

00:02:04   this movie that they would [TS]

00:02:05   there's nothing they would have done [TS]

00:02:06   they made Star Wars now they would have [TS]

00:02:08   guaranteed they would have had some [TS]

00:02:09   stupid scene showing people on Alderaan [TS]

00:02:12   like with their families and their dogs [TS]

00:02:14   and like their grandmothers an apple pie [TS]

00:02:15   like guaranteed they would do that is [TS]

00:02:17   like how can you feel any compassion for [TS]

00:02:19   these people let's have let's have a dub [TS]

00:02:20   montage not using weapons grandmother's [TS]

00:02:24   eating apple pie that would be it [TS]

00:02:26   yes holding American flags kissing [TS]

00:02:28   babies with puppies in their hands cut [TS]

00:02:30   to Princess Leia's grandmother adoptive [TS]

00:02:33   grandmother eat [TS]

00:02:35   by a cop is about to retire the next day [TS]

00:02:38   she looks up and I planet was [TS]

00:02:41   uninhabited like maybe we shouldn't feel [TS]

00:02:43   so bad maybe they were lying about it [TS]

00:02:45   being Alderaan [TS]

00:02:46   I just saying that you know they didn't [TS]

00:02:48   they had enough faith in the audience to [TS]

00:02:50   realize that when they blow up the whole [TS]

00:02:51   planet will feel bad for the people we [TS]

00:02:53   don't need to see the people's home [TS]

00:02:55   lives to like feel bad whereas nowadays [TS]

00:02:57   in any disaster movie so they're going [TS]

00:02:59   to blow up like you know it's like [TS]

00:03:00   independence there one of those types of [TS]

00:03:01   movies they're gonna blow up Japan they [TS]

00:03:02   got to show us the Japanese family like [TS]

00:03:04   cowering and feel like we understand [TS]

00:03:05   there are people there don't wait let's [TS]

00:03:07   not use your parents example [TS]

00:03:09   yes soon and respecting like they always [TS]

00:03:11   show you know the foreign cities and [TS]

00:03:13   they can't just drives me nuts yeah I [TS]

00:03:15   think you're absolutely right they would [TS]

00:03:17   show a dog minimalism adopt-a-family a [TS]

00:03:20   dog and a grandmother and behold Iranian [TS]

00:03:23   dog that's the universal sign for doom [TS]

00:03:26   that you made herself from scratch [TS]

00:03:29   first he did it and we have any would-be [TS]

00:03:31   product placement it would be like [TS]

00:03:32   pillsbury pie crust [TS]

00:03:33   oh wow well actually so you talk about [TS]

00:03:36   that but that's one of the that's a [TS]

00:03:38   strange segue but one of the things [TS]

00:03:39   about having this be set in a galaxy far [TS]

00:03:41   far away that it's an interesting choice [TS]

00:03:45   that you know and i think they have to [TS]

00:03:48   put that up front what they're really [TS]

00:03:50   saying there is this is not a story [TS]

00:03:52   about our future [TS]

00:03:53   this is more mythical than that as a [TS]

00:03:56   result though you know we're not [TS]

00:03:58   anywhere where there's earth stuff which [TS]

00:04:00   means that you can't cut any corners at [TS]

00:04:03   all [TS]

00:04:03   by having some product or something [TS]

00:04:06   that's recognizable from Earth at all [TS]

00:04:08   because you're not anywhere in our [TS]

00:04:10   future or anything which is a challenge [TS]

00:04:13   well not intentionally anyway they did [TS]

00:04:17   the opposite of product placement they [TS]

00:04:19   they imported stuff from the star wars [TS]

00:04:20   universe to our world our world to blow [TS]

00:04:24   well you just blew my mind the first [TS]

00:04:27   product placement and we pay them money [TS]

00:04:30   so although apparently they do have [TS]

00:04:31   functions in this universe as XKCD [TS]

00:04:33   pointed sure what the hell is an [TS]

00:04:36   aluminum falcon and see the great robot [TS]

00:04:40   chicken line [TS]

00:04:41   we may blew up the Death stop [TS]

00:04:44   o.o is a what the hell is an aluminum [TS]

00:04:53   falcon look at you I'm just dealing with [TS]

00:04:56   a lot of crap right now it Death Star [TS]

00:04:58   blown up by a bunch of teenagers you [TS]

00:05:00   know I didn't mean to snap [TS]

00:05:03   oh the Emperor is not pleased [TS]

00:05:06   alright where are we dr. B movie tractor [TS]

00:05:09   been no meme that's no moon [TS]

00:05:13   so so great scene they come out of [TS]

00:05:14   hyperspace and Ben obi-wan says that's [TS]

00:05:19   no moon and and how solo expressing [TS]

00:05:23   skepticism again because that's what he [TS]

00:05:25   does and then there's that moral reasons [TS]

00:05:27   I think the old man is from its let's [TS]

00:05:29   get out of here and it's too late [TS]

00:05:31   Oh stuck in a tractor beam look at [TS]

00:05:33   meeting for next small moon think i can [TS]

00:05:35   get it before yes there is almost in [TS]

00:05:37   range [TS]

00:05:38   that's no moon [TS]

00:05:40   it's a space station too big the space [TS]

00:05:43   station [TS]

00:05:48   very bad feeling a part on the ship [TS]

00:05:50   around [TS]

00:05:52   I think you're right reverse joy lock in [TS]

00:05:55   the auxiliary power [TS]

00:05:58   why are we still going towards fun [TS]

00:06:00   trying to harness and there's gotta be [TS]

00:06:02   something you can do there's nothing I [TS]

00:06:04   can do about him full power and Chester [TS]

00:06:06   going to be related [TS]

00:06:13   complan but the alternatives to fighting [TS]

00:06:16   wonder where they got the idea for a [TS]

00:06:18   tractor beam maybe you star trek oh this [TS]

00:06:21   first movie has a lot of has a lot of [TS]

00:06:23   Technology you never see again that [TS]

00:06:25   you've got that circle-shaped blaster [TS]

00:06:27   that its layout on attending singer [TS]

00:06:30   that's just because you never see that [TS]

00:06:32   again right you got the tractor beams [TS]

00:06:33   not really about your games in the [TS]

00:06:35   opening scene when they walk onto the [TS]

00:06:36   ambassadorship yeah but they don't say [TS]

00:06:39   you know I and I they don't have a [TS]

00:06:40   visual effect the tractor beam anyway [TS]

00:06:41   but it seems like there's a lot of [TS]

00:06:42   things in this movie they decided were [TS]

00:06:44   not at an important part of the star [TS]

00:06:46   wars universe and we just wouldn't be [TS]

00:06:47   seeing too much of again lightsaber is [TS]

00:06:49   much more of those you know circle shape [TS]

00:06:51   sunbeams not so much the Empire gave up [TS]

00:06:54   on studying people you kill everybody [TS]

00:06:56   another thing I love about that robot [TS]

00:06:59   chicken noticed is that the guy says [TS]

00:07:01   said set the set the blast study and [TS]

00:07:03   play immediately like kills high like [TS]

00:07:08   she doesn't care she's not being taken [TS]

00:07:10   alive she's gonna kill all you for [TS]

00:07:12   stupids bad shot stormtroopers [TS]

00:07:14   stormtroopers a only Imperial [TS]

00:07:18   Stormtroopers or so percent against you [TS]

00:07:20   know the bar and that's that's the the [TS]

00:07:25   ultimate question right the fight [TS]

00:07:27   between the stormtroopers and the red [TS]

00:07:28   shirts from Star Trek the rest he's got [TS]

00:07:31   a guy in the river troopers gotta shoot [TS]

00:07:32   some you know that they will kill [TS]

00:07:34   themselves will be just a match to us [TS]

00:07:36   our cable off a cliff here the red [TS]

00:07:38   shirts with die of starvation and start [TS]

00:07:40   to really sure that you just each other [TS]

00:07:42   that's exactly what would happen [TS]

00:07:44   sergeant so so when you talk again when [TS]

00:07:46   you talk about loving the Millennium [TS]

00:07:47   Falcon one of the things that i love [TS]

00:07:49   about the Millennium Falcon is that it [TS]

00:07:50   is the smuggling ship and so the when [TS]

00:07:52   they get my cowboy the tractor beam [TS]

00:07:54   they're gonna be brought in what's going [TS]

00:07:55   to happen now how are they gonna get out [TS]

00:07:57   of this one the answer is that they they [TS]

00:07:58   basically close themselves up in little [TS]

00:08:00   hidden compartments in the Millennium [TS]

00:08:03   Falcon what else can it do that doesn't [TS]

00:08:05   make any sense because in the beginning [TS]

00:08:07   they scan the escape pods like oh [TS]

00:08:10   they're no life-forms there and then [TS]

00:08:11   later they scan and they're like oh look [TS]

00:08:13   their droids look what get your scanner [TS]

00:08:15   technology together shielded it's it's [TS]

00:08:18   totally shield because it's a smuggler [TS]

00:08:20   ship it's brilliant they've got a fake [TS]

00:08:21   image of I don't know if something can [TS]

00:08:25   droid machinery [TS]

00:08:26   whenever something goes wrong and I'm [TS]

00:08:28   just glad that those deck plates for [TS]

00:08:30   things which are not probably intended [TS]

00:08:32   to smuggle people have releases on the [TS]

00:08:34   inside like like the trunk of your car [TS]

00:08:35   and air holes in their holes they all [TS]

00:08:39   held their breath only like three of [TS]

00:08:40   them need to breathe but that moment [TS]

00:08:43   always get cracks me up that like a the [TS]

00:08:45   kind of classic movie vibe or so they [TS]

00:08:47   have this game go in and then they bring [TS]

00:08:49   the camera and you're like hey where are [TS]

00:08:50   they right and they do the musical sting [TS]

00:08:52   just a little crack on the floor comes [TS]

00:08:54   up it's the so corny but like somehow [TS]

00:08:56   you just buy it at this type of movie [TS]

00:08:57   your cat's a you guys down there [TS]

00:09:01   give us a hand yeah the storm the storm [TS]

00:09:04   troopers are really not very competent [TS]

00:09:06   wherever they are the worst lackeys ever [TS]

00:09:10   i really enjoy in this movie that you [TS]

00:09:12   get the little bits like I love the [TS]

00:09:14   scene later where been deactivated [TS]

00:09:15   attacked me the two guys it just like [TS]

00:09:17   talking [TS]

00:09:18   look at you see those new 238 yeah [TS]

00:09:21   they're pretty cool like yeah that's the [TS]

00:09:23   you know thing that the other things [TS]

00:09:25   that were ruined [TS]

00:09:26   you know what they should do is find one [TS]

00:09:27   really good soldier and then clone him [TS]

00:09:29   about you know what shut up now they [TS]

00:09:31   will never wonder who those [TS]

00:09:33   stormtroopers are we will never know we [TS]

00:09:35   will never find know that they just [TS]

00:09:36   walked by and they go hey did you see [TS]

00:09:38   Vader he got he floated a cup of coffee [TS]

00:09:40   / friend history it's kind of like Apple [TS]

00:09:43   employees talking about Steve Jobs [TS]

00:09:44   behind his back as the vibe you do not [TS]

00:09:49   want to be in a turbolift with there's a [TS]

00:09:51   divide third theater where do you which [TS]

00:09:54   level of the Death Star you recuperate [TS]

00:09:56   what do you what exactly do you do there [TS]

00:09:58   and overthinking at combat a whole one [TS]

00:10:00   on what do the stormtroopers really [TS]

00:10:02   think of Darth Vader it basically mining [TS]

00:10:04   this territory of like today like him to [TS]

00:10:06   make fun of him behind his back at the [TS]

00:10:08   afraid of him [TS]

00:10:09   you know I don't way what's the what's [TS]

00:10:12   the deal there also they have the black [TS]

00:10:14   storm troopers who are the pilots of the [TS]

00:10:15   TIE fighter right so they're going to [TS]

00:10:17   uniform is not a race that you don't [TS]

00:10:19   like steel Jimmy Walker was gonna play [TS]

00:10:23   that nobody got like it's like Darth [TS]

00:10:26   Vader's a cousin or something [TS]

00:10:29   it's just a suit dude well you're not [TS]

00:10:32   going to get anywhere the same color [TS]

00:10:34   seat [TS]

00:10:35   the flight suits are black because it's [TS]

00:10:37   camouflage in space it's also very spot [TS]

00:10:40   is right and God you know how much it [TS]

00:10:42   pains me to say that at and it is very [TS]

00:10:44   slimming because those guys are actually [TS]

00:10:46   could drop a few pounds to fit into the [TS]

00:10:48   TIE fighter [TS]

00:10:49   well i have an explanation for those [TS]

00:10:51   students for Jason if you really wanted [TS]

00:10:52   the reason why they have the big full [TS]

00:10:53   face mask you know like Darth Vader is [TS]

00:10:57   because the inside of the TIE fighters [TS]

00:10:58   don't have life support because they're [TS]

00:11:00   built as cheaply as they possibly can be [TS]

00:11:01   so there's no air in there and they're [TS]

00:11:02   not pressurized so they need to be [TS]

00:11:04   essentially wearing a spacesuit inside [TS]

00:11:05   the fire they also have no ratio pink [TS]

00:11:07   and black is slimming [TS]

00:11:09   so why not exactly so that's the actual [TS]

00:11:12   official Star Wars universe explanation [TS]

00:11:14   the Empire loves its fashion also also [TS]

00:11:16   it looks cool [TS]

00:11:18   it does look cool so they the the [TS]

00:11:21   stormtroopers are incompetent and they [TS]

00:11:23   break into the death star and then goes [TS]

00:11:26   off to turn off the tractor beam and and [TS]

00:11:30   I think you'll find this pretty us time [TS]

00:11:32   for fisticuffs [TS]

00:11:33   it's never taken a space movie people [TS]

00:11:34   going to punching each other yeah [TS]

00:11:35   there'll be some fisticuffs sure and [TS]

00:11:38   some blasters and and what and maybe my [TS]

00:11:41   what I think it's the funniest scene in [TS]

00:11:44   the movie which is a han Solo trying to [TS]

00:11:46   explain to the guy on the other end of [TS]

00:11:48   the radio what's going on w hen should I [TS]

00:11:51   everything's under control [TS]

00:11:52   situation normal what happened I like [TS]

00:11:55   weapons malfunction but everything's [TS]

00:11:58   perfectly all right now we're fine we're [TS]

00:12:00   all fine here now [TS]

00:12:02   thank you are you having a water- [TS]

00:12:06   negative we have a reactor leak here now [TS]

00:12:10   units lockdown largely very dangerous [TS]

00:12:13   man what your operating number [TS]

00:12:15   conversation anyway that is that is one [TS]

00:12:21   of the one of the brief moments that [TS]

00:12:22   reminds you that occasionally George [TS]

00:12:24   Lucas could write a funny bit of [TS]

00:12:25   dialogue I'm I always assume that our [TS]

00:12:28   support and provide anything is fine [TS]

00:12:29   kiss me and tell me how are you was [TS]

00:12:32   added by him because it's not always all [TS]

00:12:33   right with that [TS]

00:12:34   yeah just like the I know in a later [TS]

00:12:38   movie [TS]

00:12:38   yeah I don't know yeah it seems like it [TS]

00:12:40   seems like it's applet so garbage trash [TS]

00:12:44   collector another memorable memorable [TS]

00:12:46   set-piece and something that I also took [TS]

00:12:48   away one with the two sons as a kid was [TS]

00:12:52   the air down the garbage and there's a [TS]

00:12:54   monster in the garbage with a you know [TS]

00:12:56   and I there's that I mean this there's a [TS]

00:12:59   couple of lines in that scene 2 i really [TS]

00:13:01   enjoy the understand why there's a [TS]

00:13:04   monster in the trash compactor [TS]

00:13:06   I never did it's like rats you can't get [TS]

00:13:08   rid of him but it's a trash compactor [TS]

00:13:10   life finds away we learn anything from [TS]

00:13:12   jurassic park like i loved what i love [TS]

00:13:15   that i know guys they're everywhere [TS]

00:13:16   he's not gonna have a very long life [TS]

00:13:18   style lifespan and it will come from how [TS]

00:13:21   often do they use the trash compactors [TS]

00:13:23   apparently not long enough he started [TS]

00:13:25   very small someone flushed them down the [TS]

00:13:26   toilet like a pet alligator and then [TS]

00:13:28   grows to a huge size and I like the fact [TS]

00:13:30   that this garbage on the Death Star the [TS]

00:13:32   vault the same thing with the University [TS]

00:13:33   of course there would be garbage on the [TS]

00:13:35   desktop / they do with it was compacted [TS]

00:13:37   you know it as opposed to just being [TS]

00:13:39   like everything is magic and it's the [TS]

00:13:40   future and we don't have bathrooms are [TS]

00:13:41   garbage or anything like that [TS]

00:13:43   although started stories apparently [TS]

00:13:44   shoot him in space before they jump into [TS]

00:13:45   hyperspace [TS]

00:13:46   once they turn on stanford a trash [TS]

00:13:48   compactor the monster knows that it's [TS]

00:13:52   gonna get squished and it leaves and [TS]

00:13:53   co-star else you say somewhere else [TS]

00:13:55   that's what saves Luke I think is that I [TS]

00:13:58   thought were saved and then they realize [TS]

00:14:00   they're going to be squished to death i [TS]

00:14:01   do love that exchange though where he's [TS]

00:14:02   got that the technical wrapped around [TS]

00:14:04   his neck [TS]

00:14:06   we're aware that that is a really funny [TS]

00:14:18   segment all around because another great [TS]

00:14:20   bit is that when they radio Threepio [TS]

00:14:22   yeah he your dog and he saves them and [TS]

00:14:27   he thinks that their shouts of [TS]

00:14:29   excitement or they're horrible horrible [TS]

00:14:30   death scripts because my metal body i [TS]

00:14:33   was fast for three via always feeling [TS]

00:14:37   the comments to it and and they do that [TS]

00:14:40   they did they do a lot of stuff and like [TS]

00:14:41   when your kid maybe you wouldn't get [TS]

00:14:42   that part but also at that part they [TS]

00:14:44   have the you know are two can't talk [TS]

00:14:45   right you going here the reactions to [TS]

00:14:47   them so the reaction of this point c-3po [TS]

00:14:49   says i don't care what you know I don't [TS]

00:14:51   care what the computer is telling you to [TS]

00:14:52   shut down the guard you know they're [TS]

00:14:54   basically relaying a piece of [TS]

00:14:55   information about the the you know [TS]

00:14:56   hyperdrive has been deactivated [TS]

00:14:58   right right we're tracking has been [TS]

00:15:01   played honestly say whatever i did but [TS]

00:15:04   that's the regular text with the next [TS]

00:15:05   movie mi the hyperdrive generator i [TS]

00:15:07   think i do the same thing for the video [TS]

00:15:10   whenever listen stars you need to know [TS]

00:15:12   that while you know he has it he's [TS]

00:15:14   inappropriate he has information [TS]

00:15:15   inappropriate times but he keeps cursing [TS]

00:15:18   and the only one who could understand [TS]

00:15:19   them because counsel telling him to be [TS]

00:15:21   quiet so what-what also while we're on [TS]

00:15:23   the death star any any other topics that [TS]

00:15:26   people want to bring up we got we gonna [TS]

00:15:27   there's nobody see Ben Kenobi sneaking [TS]

00:15:30   around has start he's everywhere [TS]

00:15:33   he's usually the force he's using the [TS]

00:15:35   clouding their mind [TS]

00:15:37   hey he's city the sneaky guy he's [TS]

00:15:40   wearing old man slippers you can hear ya [TS]

00:15:42   well further proof of the stormtroopers [TS]

00:15:45   in competences wen han solo around the [TS]

00:15:47   corner and they're like 5000 [TS]

00:15:50   stormtroopers all trying to shoot him [TS]

00:15:52   there another 5,000 check this out in in [TS]

00:15:57   subversion over there are five that got [TS]

00:16:00   apparently saw even so a couple of storm [TS]

00:16:04   yeah there's i basically they hit a dead [TS]

00:16:06   end and they turn around because they [TS]

00:16:08   think they're being chased and it turns [TS]

00:16:10   out it was only one guy chase but he was [TS]

00:16:13   always great [TS]

00:16:14   yeah I think that's a great scene i just [TS]

00:16:16   went back and looked you're right i was [TS]

00:16:18   misremembering the city central computer [TS]

00:16:19   thing from Empire I'm ashamed I'm little [TS]

00:16:23   disappointed you job [TS]

00:16:24   Wow well I don't have as much as this is [TS]

00:16:26   actually this movie is burned into my [TS]

00:16:27   brain that other one even more so [TS]

00:16:30   so it's hard it does tend to take over [TS]

00:16:32   alright so so darth vader and obi-wan [TS]

00:16:34   Kenobi have a have a climactic kinda [TS]

00:16:38   boring sort they have something sword [TS]

00:16:41   battle you do kind of wish they'd spend [TS]

00:16:43   a little more time on the classical [TS]

00:16:44   classical fencing backstage kind of what [TS]

00:16:46   I would call it tepid lightsaber batting [TS]

00:16:49   when they bat against each other i think [TS]

00:16:51   there's anyone i see the obi-wan Kenobi [TS]

00:16:53   shuffle in there is little scene is [TS]

00:16:54   listening to every other little striking [TS]

00:16:56   out yet [TS]

00:16:57   it's hilarious yo Kenobi shuffle dance [TS]

00:17:00   move that all the kids were doing and in [TS]

00:17:02   the end he just sees Luke and says [TS]

00:17:04   alright and then holds up his lightsaber [TS]

00:17:05   and this is turn but he does that was [TS]

00:17:08   like that's why Alec Guinness smile [TS]

00:17:10   that's a more of a million bucks right [TS]

00:17:11   there when he does that little smile [TS]

00:17:13   we did a when I was a when I think camp [TS]

00:17:15   as you okay we filmed I took like a [TS]

00:17:17   video production class and we filmed [TS]

00:17:19   like a parody of star wars and the only [TS]

00:17:21   joking that i really enjoyed what you [TS]

00:17:23   want to video camp now i just add a camp [TS]

00:17:25   that had a video class anyways much [TS]

00:17:29   better [TS]

00:17:30   the only part of that they only part of [TS]

00:17:31   that parody that still makes me laugh a [TS]

00:17:33   bit is that we had the scene where you [TS]

00:17:34   know he gets you know that they're [TS]

00:17:36   fighting and then he lets himself get [TS]

00:17:37   cut down and we cut to a shot of just [TS]

00:17:39   like robot the floor and then like out [TS]

00:17:41   of frame this janitors broom comes and [TS]

00:17:43   sweeps it up off-screen I i think it's [TS]

00:17:46   interesting that they are there's the [TS]

00:17:49   the shot of Vader stepping on it like [TS]

00:17:52   what we're doing [TS]

00:17:53   where to go I couldn't have killed him [TS]

00:17:54   at badly and stepping on the row matter [TS]

00:17:57   and wondering where where he went well [TS]

00:17:59   shouldn't he know what happened to him [TS]

00:18:01   yes but it's funny that it that he you [TS]

00:18:04   know again strange things with darth [TS]

00:18:06   vader and said something about becoming [TS]

00:18:09   more [TS]

00:18:10   yeah what he's saying but he's saying [TS]

00:18:11   when he steps on is like this can't be [TS]

00:18:13   good [TS]

00:18:14   it's not there it's not there but i need [TS]

00:18:17   some coffee so you want the robe fit me [TS]

00:18:19   because I think what he's saying is true [TS]

00:18:22   free lightsaber also like that he gets [TS]

00:18:25   shot like they shoot the door and it [TS]

00:18:26   closes in front of them and it's like [TS]

00:18:28   dude he's got the force like you [TS]

00:18:30   couldn't stop the door from closing [TS]

00:18:32   he was tired from his yet from a [TS]

00:18:35   strenuous battle yet this particular [TS]

00:18:37   scene has some of the worst lightsabre [TS]

00:18:38   effects to the other ones were in sort [TS]

00:18:41   of dark rooms and they have better [TS]

00:18:42   lighting but they were still going with [TS]

00:18:43   practical effects with the head-spinning [TS]

00:18:45   sticks with reflective beads on them and [TS]

00:18:47   sometimes in this thing you can see a [TS]

00:18:49   spending stick with reflective BTW when [TS]

00:18:51   they pointed down to the the tip is [TS]

00:18:53   towards the camera [TS]

00:18:54   yes like a very thin little yeah yeah [TS]

00:18:58   it's endearing in some ways but like [TS]

00:19:01   it's clear that green they had a limited [TS]

00:19:03   budget can only spend so much i think [TS]

00:19:05   they spent very wisely on you know space [TS]

00:19:08   models flying through space over a blue [TS]

00:19:09   screen and you know stuff like and [TS]

00:19:11   assets and the fact that lightsabers are [TS]

00:19:13   not all that like people think Star Wars [TS]

00:19:16   lightsaber but if you watch Star Wars [TS]

00:19:17   the original Star Wars is so little [TS]

00:19:19   lightsaber and they are so not the most [TS]

00:19:21   exciting thing this movie in fact I [TS]

00:19:23   would say it going back to the scene [TS]

00:19:24   with a with Luke in the nobody wants a [TS]

00:19:26   little hot there on on tattooing that [TS]

00:19:29   the second they turn that thing on [TS]

00:19:31   that's all they need to do for this [TS]

00:19:32   movie turn that sucker on show kids with [TS]

00:19:33   a lightsaber is their jaws dropped open [TS]

00:19:35   and then that would sustain them for the [TS]

00:19:38   rest of the movie and the fact that they [TS]

00:19:39   were shown again briefly as you know I [TS]

00:19:41   had a flashlight with a colored tube [TS]

00:19:44   yeah also I mean that because that [TS]

00:19:45   effect was was just unbelievably good [TS]

00:19:47   compared to every other space type of [TS]

00:19:50   effect on the whole idea of you know a [TS]

00:19:52   laser sword type that's all they need to [TS]

00:19:53   turn that sucker on wave it around every [TS]

00:19:55   kid one of those in two seconds and they [TS]

00:19:57   didn't need to have you didn't need Luke [TS]

00:19:59   wielding it for the complex Lucas Lucas [TS]

00:20:01   flying a spaceship for the climax [TS]

00:20:02   obi-wan and drop the various little [TS]

00:20:04   battle not that important i think that [TS]

00:20:07   was you know that was all you needed in [TS]

00:20:09   this movie that sound would it would [TS]

00:20:11   have been handy if he'd been carrying [TS]

00:20:13   that lightsaber all around the desktop [TS]

00:20:14   with him [TS]

00:20:15   well yeah he didn't know how to use it [TS]

00:20:17   he would it's like that thing went [TS]

00:20:18   around the internet the other day of [TS]

00:20:19   like about what you would do if you had [TS]

00:20:21   your own lightsaber as a pie chart and [TS]

00:20:22   it's like using the final you're only [TS]

00:20:24   one person tonight [TS]

00:20:25   ninety-nine percent immediate accidental [TS]

00:20:27   amputation [TS]

00:20:30   so moving forward again to let see they [TS]

00:20:36   escaped and there's a there's that they [TS]

00:20:38   jump into little cannons and do in some [TS]

00:20:40   ways it's a shot-for-shot reenactment of [TS]

00:20:42   a world war two movie [TS]

00:20:43   yeah unnecessary but Lucas loves the [TS]

00:20:45   world war two stuff [TS]

00:20:47   well that's great stuff I i love the [TS]

00:20:50   answer between the two guys that you [TS]

00:20:51   know you get seem like you know a little [TS]

00:20:53   bit Millennium Falcon you know [TS]

00:20:54   come on baby hold come on baby hold [TS]

00:20:56   together plus they had to try and stop [TS]

00:20:58   them and they had to shoot him I mean [TS]

00:20:59   they let him go but they had to make it [TS]

00:21:02   the escape seem believable there needs [TS]

00:21:04   to be much so that shows layer being [TS]

00:21:05   cynical that's one of my favorite at [TS]

00:21:07   addition to her character is that after [TS]

00:21:09   this big battle where the two men are [TS]

00:21:10   like yeah we did it she goes for it let [TS]

00:21:12   us go which is football cynical and [TS]

00:21:14   deflates the two male heroes with her [TS]

00:21:16   not a bad bit of rescuing huh you know [TS]

00:21:19   sometimes I amaze even myself [TS]

00:21:22   that doesn't sound too hard they let us [TS]

00:21:25   go [TS]

00:21:26   the only explanation for the ease of our [TS]

00:21:28   escape easy you call that easy [TS]

00:21:30   they're tracking us not this sister [TS]

00:21:33   although she gets into that her [TS]

00:21:34   character is really developed in that's [TS]

00:21:36   one of my favorite scenes the entire [TS]

00:21:37   movie 44 lay out what she's just taught [TS]

00:21:40   there walking down the hallway after [TS]

00:21:41   pulling her out and and and they're [TS]

00:21:42   trying to talk and it's basically [TS]

00:21:44   establishing a relationship going on [TS]

00:21:45   later she's testy and there you know [TS]

00:21:47   spar with each other at this [TS]

00:21:50   I don't know who you are where you came [TS]

00:21:53   from [TS]

00:21:53   now on you do is lie to you k look your [TS]

00:21:58   worshipfulness let's get one thing [TS]

00:22:00   straight [TS]

00:22:00   I take orders from just one person me so [TS]

00:22:04   one day still alive [TS]

00:22:05   somebody get this big walking carpet out [TS]

00:22:07   of my way [TS]

00:22:09   no reward is worth this that is great [TS]

00:22:12   interplay and I think that's that [TS]

00:22:13   dialogue you know clearly Carrie Fisher [TS]

00:22:15   and Harrison Ford had had really good [TS]

00:22:17   chemistry i think the most part that was [TS]

00:22:18   that was like a Sorkin scene because [TS]

00:22:19   they're walking and talking and it's [TS]

00:22:21   just sparkling you know like the lines [TS]

00:22:23   as written or not great but the [TS]

00:22:24   performances Aaron circuit star wars and [TS]

00:22:28   that was that was that seriously they're [TS]

00:22:29   walking down the hallway and they're [TS]

00:22:31   doing the little snappy with the [TS]

00:22:32   dialogue and the writing is not that the [TS]

00:22:34   lines are not that great with the [TS]

00:22:35   delivery sells it [TS]

00:22:37   this is the part of the movie where [TS]

00:22:38   there's a very strange shift and you you [TS]

00:22:41   end up on like the the moon and there's [TS]

00:22:44   like a there's like a briefing don't [TS]

00:22:47   like they're like it and would get our [TS]

00:22:49   university basically i always think of [TS]

00:22:52   it as rebel you because they've got that [TS]

00:22:53   exterior shot of that huge building that [TS]

00:22:55   looks kinda like maybe it's on a college [TS]

00:22:57   campus you know you think about the [TS]

00:22:59   scene and how like it's out there this [TS]

00:23:00   university and they're talking about [TS]

00:23:02   stuff but if you look at some of the [TS]

00:23:03   things that they built this humongous [TS]

00:23:05   set with life-size x-wing and why wings [TS]

00:23:08   in it just for this like establishing [TS]

00:23:10   shot showing here is the rebel fleet [TS]

00:23:11   impressive now it's very they're [TS]

00:23:13   scrapping it ya know I the time sequence [TS]

00:23:17   here always confused me too because [TS]

00:23:18   they're being tracked by the Empire [TS]

00:23:20   presumably the death star takes a little [TS]

00:23:22   time to move its kind of big [TS]

00:23:24   that's true wait for it I don't know how [TS]

00:23:27   it travels between solar systems but [TS]

00:23:29   takes an hour to get in range of the [TS]

00:23:30   planet [TS]

00:23:31   well you can't get it can jump in the [TS]

00:23:35   tender but remotely and then it has to [TS]

00:23:37   kind of navigate they used older you [TS]

00:23:40   know speed up jumping to the you can't [TS]

00:23:42   exit hyperspace near gravity well Greg [TS]

00:23:45   is right of course that starts large [TS]

00:23:47   enough to have its own gravity well that [TS]

00:23:48   they have to stop they get the Death [TS]

00:23:50   Star gas station they come back with the [TS]

00:23:52   plans and there and there immediately [TS]

00:23:55   analyzed in the one flaw is found even [TS]

00:23:58   though the Empire should have known then [TS]

00:24:01   that there was a flaw shoddy [TS]

00:24:03   construction government the lowest [TS]

00:24:04   bidder built the best are [TS]

00:24:06   scalpel it would have been really sad to [TS]

00:24:07   say but along the way down that trench [TS]

00:24:09   shot at it and it turned out that they [TS]

00:24:11   fixed it [TS]

00:24:12   yeah they patched it may be that star [TS]

00:24:14   1.1 yeah combination shot this port just [TS]

00:24:20   seems to be concreted over i got that [TS]

00:24:24   bit ya know I am I missing something [TS]

00:24:26   here great star wars fan rationalize [TS]

00:24:28   that seems to be one of those strange [TS]

00:24:30   points in the movie where explainers not [TS]

00:24:32   rationalize errs the broader point is [TS]

00:24:36   valid is that when you build something [TS]

00:24:38   really large you're not thinking of [TS]

00:24:40   threats from small things and mostly [TS]

00:24:42   this is a bad strategy because of you if [TS]

00:24:43   you only have a small fleet it's like [TS]

00:24:45   we're going to pick them off it's the [TS]

00:24:46   idea of the Nets attacking the giant [TS]

00:24:48   where if you can you can do attack it in [TS]

00:24:51   a way where its defenses were not set up [TS]

00:24:53   for that type of attack so that's the [TS]

00:24:54   only chance you have because you have a [TS]

00:24:55   small fleet so that that type of [TS]

00:24:57   scenario it is kind of plausible the [TS]

00:24:59   exact way it's done with the tunnel that [TS]

00:25:00   leads directly to the heart the [TS]

00:25:02   vulnerable heart of the thing well you [TS]

00:25:03   know that's poetic license but well yeah [TS]

00:25:05   they made I mean they tried to make it [TS]

00:25:06   like it's it's there's this tiny little [TS]

00:25:08   flaw right like it's this tiny little [TS]

00:25:10   flaw we need to get there and you need [TS]

00:25:12   to be a super good shot they establish [TS]

00:25:14   upfront it's not like you can just you [TS]

00:25:15   know it's not easy to hit the many [TS]

00:25:17   people make attempts at that you know [TS]

00:25:19   you have to be amazingly skilled you [TS]

00:25:20   might have to use the Force you know [TS]

00:25:21   that's not there is a on the upside [TS]

00:25:24   there's a trench that leads right to [TS]

00:25:25   that sucker [TS]

00:25:26   well this trenches all over the thing [TS]

00:25:27   but that's a good design but and Luke we [TS]

00:25:29   know you've never flown an x-wing before [TS]

00:25:31   and because we're rebels we probably [TS]

00:25:33   don't have that many x-wings use the [TS]

00:25:35   moment whoppers st16 back home did you [TS]

00:25:37   see 16 was in the battle but his dad was [TS]

00:25:40   a really good pilot to their kind of [TS]

00:25:42   short on pilots were the t16 controls [TS]

00:25:45   similar to the x-wing control [TS]

00:25:46   technically yes both are made by income [TS]

00:25:48   it's just like driving a car man is like [TS]

00:25:50   a steering wheel and three pedals you [TS]

00:25:51   know or to peddle techniques and [TS]

00:25:53   technically they are made by the same [TS]

00:25:54   manufacturer of just saying that's right [TS]

00:25:55   artoo is flying up it really is our take [TS]

00:26:00   except he gets shot in the head doesn't [TS]

00:26:01   eat and yeah [TS]

00:26:03   alright is amazingly resilient though [TS]

00:26:05   lots of redundancy in the arterial [TS]

00:26:07   minutes [TS]

00:26:07   I don't understand why the death star [TS]

00:26:09   you know it's kind of basic military [TS]

00:26:11   tactics are you have a giant target and [TS]

00:26:13   then you have it's full of little tiny [TS]

00:26:15   planes that will go out in patrol and [TS]

00:26:17   then when they see the 30 played the 30 [TS]

00:26:19   starship coming they will attack them [TS]

00:26:21   with their tie fighters they have [TS]

00:26:23   million thousands of them [TS]

00:26:25   it's like it's like an aircraft carrier [TS]

00:26:26   because they come into low for the laser [TS]

00:26:28   cannon turbolaser cabinets doesn't make [TS]

00:26:32   any sense it doesn't the case was just [TS]

00:26:34   like the cantina was set up for [TS]

00:26:35   merchandising the trenching was set up [TS]

00:26:38   for video games [TS]

00:26:39   yeah I don't think they have that in [TS]

00:26:41   mind thanks something's happened [TS]

00:26:43   I can't listen to that music that the [TS]

00:26:46   music in that scene and actually the [TS]

00:26:49   music and the scene in the Millennium [TS]

00:26:50   Falcon weather in the gun turrets too [TS]

00:26:52   because I've heard those bits in various [TS]

00:26:54   video games so much that it makes me [TS]

00:26:57   sweaty when I hear it like a bit between [TS]

00:26:59   x-wing and I target am a very tense [TS]

00:27:02   oh well i just lost I lost levels in [TS]

00:27:07   like x-wing TIE fighter so many times [TS]

00:27:09   that they play that same music over and [TS]

00:27:11   over and over again David segue between [TS]

00:27:13   different sections yeah uh-huh well I [TS]

00:27:16   say that that one effect that we think [TS]

00:27:19   of it I don't remember not having seen [TS]

00:27:21   this movie but i do remember the the [TS]

00:27:23   biggest emotional moment for me was when [TS]

00:27:25   they swoop that camera into that trench [TS]

00:27:27   because previously this all like [TS]

00:27:29   spaceship movies had looked fake or [TS]

00:27:30   whatever and have been slow speed even [TS]

00:27:31   today when i watch it [TS]

00:27:33   even today when I see that camera move [TS]

00:27:34   it is still like more exciting than [TS]

00:27:36   ninety percent of the CD stuff that I [TS]

00:27:38   say you've just taken that camera [TS]

00:27:39   swooping into that trench they use that [TS]

00:27:42   they reuse that that's used twice [TS]

00:27:43   mmm yeah i was with many people go into [TS]

00:27:45   the trench but i like it because it [TS]

00:27:46   looks so real you know it was expensive [TS]

00:27:49   film sure yeah and the thing is that [TS]

00:27:51   it's the biggest cheat because if you [TS]

00:27:53   want something to look real you know do [TS]

00:27:54   it at night or in space and it do it you [TS]

00:27:57   know like monochrome with harsh lighting [TS]

00:27:59   like you don't have to look like a [TS]

00:28:00   forest it's not it's not an alien [TS]

00:28:02   creature it's the easiest thing you [TS]

00:28:03   could possibly do but it looks so dead [TS]

00:28:05   real and right-wing with into my job [TS]

00:28:07   because it's also it's POV right again [TS]

00:28:09   like your yeah it's we have a background [TS]

00:28:11   so you get the impression of speed plus [TS]

00:28:13   they're shooting at you with JT anybody [TS]

00:28:15   else [TS]

00:28:16   excellent it was it even to this day I [TS]

00:28:18   say that that is like so fast and so [TS]

00:28:20   dramatic and it feels like you know that [TS]

00:28:22   you are there and that's exciting and [TS]

00:28:24   interesting much more so than they would [TS]

00:28:26   like the third person shots nowadays [TS]

00:28:28   where you pulled back and you see like [TS]

00:28:29   the amazing jet fighter crashing into [TS]

00:28:31   the buildings that you see it from a [TS]

00:28:32   distance here you're you're in it you [TS]

00:28:34   know what I mean [TS]

00:28:35   good job yeah and I like in general i [TS]

00:28:39   like the fact that the the trench run [TS]

00:28:42   seen there there is a lot of jeopardy [TS]

00:28:44   and we we do see we're right in the [TS]

00:28:46   cockpit with some of these guys just as [TS]

00:28:48   they get blown up but generally they're [TS]

00:28:49   not afraid to kill people and kids [TS]

00:28:51   moving everyone doesn't come out of it [TS]

00:28:52   like everyone's fine all my friends are [TS]

00:28:53   saved out a pretty much kill everybody [TS]

00:28:55   looks like that almost everybody died [TS]

00:28:57   including Porkins porking Lucas is never [TS]

00:29:02   good at naming people but i feel that [TS]

00:29:04   one is particularly cruel troll [TS]

00:29:06   well that was his nickname they were [TS]

00:29:08   they were a bunch of mean bastards in [TS]

00:29:09   the x-wing canada lol they have you have [TS]

00:29:11   you have all the you have all the [TS]

00:29:14   vestiges of the cutscenes in the [TS]

00:29:15   relationship between Luke and Biggs yeah [TS]

00:29:18   dammit pigs were ru or poo yeah we [TS]

00:29:21   talked to do and then they cut they [TS]

00:29:23   actually cut at some point too i think [TS]

00:29:24   something that's like a little bit like [TS]

00:29:26   there's abrupt end to one of those shots [TS]

00:29:28   where that sounds like he's about to [TS]

00:29:29   talk about something like pigs my best [TS]

00:29:32   friend where are you know and they [TS]

00:29:33   necessarily top but I thought home was [TS]

00:29:36   your best friend [TS]

00:29:37   yeah you guys just met you guys should [TS]

00:29:39   be like bffs also the the pilot the TIE [TS]

00:29:43   fighter pilot who bangs into Vader [TS]

00:29:45   because he's so concerned the truth is a [TS]

00:29:47   true hero of the movie i was going to [TS]

00:29:49   get to that point there's a good article [TS]

00:29:50   on cracked.com from last year saying [TS]

00:29:52   that the true hero of Star Wars and hope [TS]

00:29:55   it does not have a Kiki TIE fighter [TS]

00:29:56   pilot and it's not on sold this house [TS]

00:29:58   all comes in and he's got a clear shot [TS]

00:30:00   they don't know is there does he shoot [TS]

00:30:02   Darth Vader no he doesn't he could've [TS]

00:30:03   picked any one of those typewriters [TS]

00:30:04   should he shoots the guy next to Darth [TS]

00:30:06   Vader who explodes [TS]

00:30:07   then what happens then does issue Darth [TS]

00:30:09   Vader know he does nothing else he talks [TS]

00:30:10   over the intercom nothing going on then [TS]

00:30:12   what happens [TS]

00:30:13   the guy next to Darth Vader flips out [TS]

00:30:16   crashing into darth vader and eyes and [TS]

00:30:18   causing I just getting off that guy is [TS]

00:30:20   so fired [TS]

00:30:22   honda low on funny though possibly the [TS]

00:30:24   worst choice ever in like I'm going to [TS]

00:30:26   come save you I'm coming out [TS]

00:30:27   don't be haha that was all that was all [TS]

00:30:30   what he had planned he saw this chain [TS]

00:30:32   reaction like four steps in advance if I [TS]

00:30:34   got you shoot that guy over there is [TS]

00:30:36   gonna be a lot easier to hit it if Hans [TS]

00:30:39   doing what you suggest there's no [TS]

00:30:40   sequels [TS]

00:30:41   yeah we can't kill that's that's what [TS]

00:30:44   that was totally on his mind getting [TS]

00:30:46   your adventures that a shot at Vader and [TS]

00:30:47   missed and just wing them an invader [TS]

00:30:49   would have flipped out and his little [TS]

00:30:50   tumbling thing the other two guys could [TS]

00:30:51   have bugged out of here because I mean [TS]

00:30:53   he's flying and shooting at the same [TS]

00:30:55   time he might just you know people get [TS]

00:30:57   off wanting my to his head [TS]

00:30:59   anyway i'm playing with a little apple [TS]

00:31:01   to Joystiq basically and as the story of [TS]

00:31:04   this story points out the the TIE [TS]

00:31:06   fighter who flips out has enough time to [TS]

00:31:08   say over the intercom lookout as he's [TS]

00:31:10   stumbling towards may not know he was [TS]

00:31:12   totally unperturbed no one shot him [TS]

00:31:14   didn't graduate anything he just looked [TS]

00:31:15   out at lookout I'm coming with you [TS]

00:31:18   there's no reason to live he's like my [TS]

00:31:21   wingman Bob just got blown up [TS]

00:31:23   yeah buddy just yeah just got you should [TS]

00:31:27   have swerve towards the wall not towards [TS]

00:31:29   vader i love Bader's grunt of surprise [TS]

00:31:31   to and the other hooks winblows water [TS]

00:31:34   hot i will say that that is one of my [TS]

00:31:36   the the end sort of climax there's my [TS]

00:31:38   favorite teams and i still get [TS]

00:31:40   goosebumps at that Han Solo's you know [TS]

00:31:42   yeah he comes out of the Sun that's [TS]

00:31:45   another lesson of the scene where it's [TS]

00:31:46   so easy to do you just do a spotlight [TS]

00:31:48   for the Sun that the ship the ship model [TS]

00:31:50   sort of stops the sunbeams a little bit [TS]

00:31:52   yeah her face it is so easy to do with [TS]

00:31:55   personal checks and they that they knew [TS]

00:31:56   what would work [TS]

00:31:57   you know sometimes I think they knew or [TS]

00:32:00   work and they stuck to the sweet spot [TS]

00:32:02   again i would say i challenge you to [TS]

00:32:03   take computer and make a better looking [TS]

00:32:05   version of that to second scene with [TS]

00:32:07   computer online Falcon and compassion i [TS]

00:32:09   will say that you know in the Death Star [TS]

00:32:11   battle there are clearly from my mind [TS]

00:32:14   you know there's a lot of rough edges [TS]

00:32:16   there's a lot of scenes of people going [TS]

00:32:18   in for attacks on the Death Star [TS]

00:32:20   yeah and that they didn't have the money [TS]

00:32:21   to do it the way they want to look at [TS]

00:32:23   you know terrible there are a lot of [TS]

00:32:24   things that look really good and I think [TS]

00:32:26   that's why the terrible scenes look look [TS]

00:32:27   sad look worse because they're put up [TS]

00:32:29   against a lot of things that look really [TS]

00:32:30   really quite impressive especially for [TS]

00:32:32   the time and so you know later versions [TS]

00:32:37   of special effects were they to exist if [TS]

00:32:38   someone were to redo that section of the [TS]

00:32:40   movie [TS]

00:32:41   for example you know you could [TS]

00:32:42   definitely make stuff that looks cool [TS]

00:32:44   but you know at the same time I think it [TS]

00:32:46   there there's definitely a nostalgic [TS]

00:32:49   value an A and an appreciation value to [TS]

00:32:52   a lot of those scenes even out there [TS]

00:32:54   awesome struck by how well they cut [TS]

00:32:55   together the limited footage they have [TS]

00:32:57   because they only have so many foot [TS]

00:32:58   pictures of and the ships are going to [TS]

00:33:00   the trench and chasing them and they're [TS]

00:33:02   going to the trench again and they reuse [TS]

00:33:03   scenes but they entered the intercut [TS]

00:33:05   with scenes from inside the cockpit [TS]

00:33:07   where they move the camera as if like [TS]

00:33:09   they're riding slow-moving bucking [TS]

00:33:10   Broncos for every x-wing fighter is [TS]

00:33:12   bouncing every excellent pilot is slowly [TS]

00:33:13   bouncing up and down so they cut to the [TS]

00:33:15   close-up of that cut the side view of [TS]

00:33:17   them going to the chance to cut to the [TS]

00:33:18   point of view from Vader you know that [TS]

00:33:20   they are hiding the fact that none of [TS]

00:33:22   these shots are as good as that one [TS]

00:33:23   camera move into the trench right but [TS]

00:33:25   i'm amazed at how well it holds up [TS]

00:33:26   without any enhancement or anything like [TS]

00:33:29   that where they just keep it moving fast [TS]

00:33:30   enough and I music and the tension of [TS]

00:33:32   the scene you know you're not you're not [TS]

00:33:34   paying attention right like you're [TS]

00:33:35   you're focusing on the plot and every [TS]

00:33:37   right you're caught up you caught up in [TS]

00:33:38   the moment and they you know they don't [TS]

00:33:40   let them linger on any one bad shot [TS]

00:33:41   enough to for you to get upset but you [TS]

00:33:43   know there are a couple there are a [TS]

00:33:44   couple really really bad shots where [TS]

00:33:46   they like the x-wing swoops in and shoot [TS]

00:33:48   something on the surface of the Death [TS]

00:33:50   Star it's like that looks that's a model [TS]

00:33:52   but the terrible little model City there [TS]

00:33:54   to the surface of decimal things were [TS]

00:33:56   all shot in daylight so a lot of my [TS]

00:33:58   meeting education and it shows but again [TS]

00:34:01   you know i would use that is it a [TS]

00:34:02   drawing attention to you know compared [TS]

00:34:05   to the next two movies which clearly [TS]

00:34:07   they're like well we learned a lot from [TS]

00:34:08   that things never to do again and the [TS]

00:34:10   next two movies look you know by the [TS]

00:34:12   time you hit Jedi you know the effects [TS]

00:34:14   are just a those effects look perfect to [TS]

00:34:17   me still [TS]

00:34:18   yeah and and song this the kids showing [TS]

00:34:21   this to my children I don't I was trying [TS]

00:34:23   to quiz them and in and in a way they [TS]

00:34:26   don't know they're being asked but I [TS]

00:34:27   don't think they'd notice any difference [TS]

00:34:28   and if you're my koala lights like [TS]

00:34:30   pointing down at them [TS]

00:34:31   what did you see well you know that they [TS]

00:34:34   can't distinguish like these effects are [TS]

00:34:35   better than those effects with this [TS]

00:34:36   movie looks better than that what you [TS]

00:34:38   know sometimes they can tell but for [TS]

00:34:40   Star Wars I don't think they noticed a [TS]

00:34:41   real big difference between you know [TS]

00:34:44   Star Wars and return of the jedi in [TS]

00:34:46   terms of the effects quality because [TS]

00:34:48   when you again when your kid all they [TS]

00:34:49   see is the emotion of that scene and [TS]

00:34:51   attention and they have no idea about [TS]

00:34:53   anything else and that's certainly how [TS]

00:34:55   it was for all of us [TS]

00:34:56   I i do remember when I was some when i [TS]

00:34:58   was 14 or 13 and so return of the jedi [TS]

00:35:01   actually noticed how much better the [TS]

00:35:04   effects were because there were so many [TS]

00:35:06   different things moving at once right [TS]

00:35:08   but I'm so so at the end we have the the [TS]

00:35:12   death star blows up spoiler horn like [TS]

00:35:15   you have the great sex scene of the of [TS]

00:35:16   the photon torpedoes going in wait what [TS]

00:35:19   when looking i know is this [TS]

00:35:21   although there is a nice detail married [TS]

00:35:23   you can see where the first shot missed [TS]

00:35:24   ya [TS]

00:35:26   and then it doesn't impact on the [TS]

00:35:27   surface Luca takes a deep breath and [TS]

00:35:31   whenever its metals for everybody except [TS]

00:35:34   you probably like rebels who can take [TS]

00:35:36   time to make medals for people [TS]

00:35:38   what is the real without racism he was [TS]

00:35:41   just the copilot if you're going to give [TS]

00:35:42   the melt all the copilot's to then just [TS]

00:35:44   how many metals we have to buy now I [TS]

00:35:45   mean these aren't you gonna get one he [TS]

00:35:47   was the copilot there were three guys [TS]

00:35:48   you survived we give them to the main [TS]

00:35:51   character is how the number of chips on [TS]

00:35:53   the hand [TS]

00:35:54   aliens don't get medals we don't serve [TS]

00:35:56   their kind here get everyone everyone [TS]

00:35:58   who survived gets a medal this isn't [TS]

00:35:59   like kindergarten where everybody gets a [TS]

00:36:01   medal of start they helped this is a [TS]

00:36:06   medal for that cheese from a bow and she [TS]

00:36:08   has you knows it she has to walk behind [TS]

00:36:10   like someone's wife too and they go down [TS]

00:36:11   the aisle he's gonna walk a step behind [TS]

00:36:13   i believe chewy gets a medal in the [TS]

00:36:15   comic also also I believe r2d2 and c3po [TS]

00:36:19   have had necklaces with a big medallion [TS]

00:36:22   of feel they are nicely polished up for [TS]

00:36:26   the final scene that's another thing [TS]

00:36:28   that struck me from from the beginning [TS]

00:36:29   to the end of this movie [TS]

00:36:30   how how good the props for the droids [TS]

00:36:33   look they look like shiny metal robots [TS]

00:36:35   and I don't like it when they don't be [TS]

00:36:37   able to make shiny metal anymore but [TS]

00:36:39   they just look more shiny in metal then [TS]

00:36:41   shiny metal things moves today [TS]

00:36:42   well it's not it's not i think the point [TS]

00:36:44   is they don't look shiny to me because I [TS]

00:36:46   think that's a problem with the cg stuff [TS]

00:36:48   well when they get polished at the end [TS]

00:36:49   but even even in the beginning when [TS]

00:36:51   they're all scuffed up they look like [TS]

00:36:52   metal [TS]

00:36:53   yeah well they're scuffed up but like [TS]

00:36:54   they look like there's a dull sort of [TS]

00:36:55   matte finish to like artis dome I think [TS]

00:36:57   that looks it looks like metal but it [TS]

00:36:59   looks like you know well-worn metal Nazi [TS]

00:37:01   threepio's got like a dentist a dent in [TS]

00:37:03   his head like and he's all dusty and [TS]

00:37:04   dirty [TS]

00:37:05   I think they make them out [TS]

00:37:06   plastic now maybe that's the problem [TS]

00:37:07   they don't want it so easy to mold [TS]

00:37:09   plastic that they didn't have some guy [TS]

00:37:10   hammer out metal you know although i [TS]

00:37:13   will say this time i did i don't know [TS]

00:37:14   why but maybe because the pacing i [TS]

00:37:16   laughed a kind of a previously at the [TS]

00:37:19   part where they they take our two out of [TS]

00:37:21   the x-wing afterwards and he's been shot [TS]

00:37:23   by darth vader and looks terrible he's [TS]

00:37:24   all blown up and everything and there's [TS]

00:37:26   that brief my second of like oh no artoo [TS]

00:37:28   and threepio goes on and then like like [TS]

00:37:31   two seconds later [TS]

00:37:32   everybody's like that will be by mr. [TS]

00:37:36   robot isn't there a like a like a [TS]

00:37:39   hard-bitten mechanic I this that's all [TS]

00:37:41   right we'll get a patched-up without to [TS]

00:37:42   that yeah but feel like they're like all [TS]

00:37:44   right great glad to hear it let's go [TS]

00:37:46   back to celebrate party we have it back [TS]

00:37:49   in your mother for everybody's before [TS]

00:37:51   they go into by we backed him up we [TS]

00:37:53   totally backed him up beforehand so it [TS]

00:37:55   will be fine also nobody seems to care [TS]

00:37:56   about the the the like dozens of people [TS]

00:37:59   the two dozen people who died and I've [TS]

00:38:01   hack hero's of the rebellion [TS]

00:38:03   yeah they're dead metals sprite more [TS]

00:38:08   medals for me [TS]

00:38:09   hey guys example we have extra metals [TS]

00:38:11   here that the copilot's could get a [TS]

00:38:13   except for that Wookiee room that scene [TS]

00:38:18   has the worst line the entire movie for [TS]

00:38:20   me tho you gotta do it well you let you [TS]

00:38:23   get all the credit and take all the [TS]

00:38:24   reward money they knew there was more to [TS]

00:38:28   you than money you see what I'm saying [TS]

00:38:30   here with this text that's an example of [TS]

00:38:32   you know Arizona's great line George you [TS]

00:38:34   can type the ship and you sure as hell [TS]

00:38:36   can't say it but doesn't works written [TS]

00:38:38   line not delivered well in the entire [TS]

00:38:40   movie it's okay i do declare [TS]

00:38:44   well that brings us actually John [TS]

00:38:46   pointing that out i want i want you all [TS]

00:38:48   to tell me something that you think is [TS]

00:38:50   bad and Star Wars tell me somethin bad [TS]

00:38:55   everybody who criticizes it is bad but [TS]

00:38:58   they will never make another movie is [TS]

00:39:00   good i think we covered a lot of stuff [TS]

00:39:02   with the bad lightsabre effects some of [TS]

00:39:05   the author the dialogue looping is bad [TS]

00:39:07   sometimes that words coming out of my [TS]

00:39:09   campers mouth don't match up with the [TS]

00:39:11   word oh yeah the screen with a guy in [TS]

00:39:12   Syracuse's bad the the death sentence on [TS]

00:39:16   five planets or whatever he it's like [TS]

00:39:18   almost nothing he says man [TS]

00:39:20   just up with ya it's like they couldn't [TS]

00:39:21   be bothered it ADR is a lost art or [TS]

00:39:24   something and enough for a dr you know [TS]

00:39:25   they're making all these crazy special [TS]

00:39:27   effects in costumes i think they don't [TS]

00:39:28   have time like something yeah something [TS]

00:39:30   had to fall by the wayside there and if [TS]

00:39:32   it's the loop and dialogue well nobody's [TS]

00:39:34   really paying attention to their mouths [TS]

00:39:35   you're ignoring his alien physiology he [TS]

00:39:37   doesn't speak out of his mouth he speaks [TS]

00:39:39   out of an organ lower down in his chest [TS]

00:39:41   it doesn't necessarily match his lips [TS]

00:39:43   that's racist years no metal for him [TS]

00:39:46   then we don't look at me I know he'd be [TS]

00:39:48   too on it with his chest mouth [TS]

00:39:51   well I think it's funny that obi-wan [TS]

00:39:52   Kenobi goes into hiding and he says i [TS]

00:39:55   will use is assumed identity of Ben [TS]

00:39:57   Kenobi know and we'll have a 5v what the [TS]

00:40:04   Kenobi's are like the smiths of the [TS]

00:40:06   Empire that's right yeah wizard Scott [TS]

00:40:08   that was just a crazy old man okay well [TS]

00:40:10   never finds get that line did he break [TS]

00:40:13   that to that line of God in the other [TS]

00:40:15   direction [TS]

00:40:16   yeah that crazy old man is just a wizard [TS]

00:40:18   now I don't argue it but he's still [TS]

00:40:20   admitting he's a wizard either way it [TS]

00:40:22   doesn't make sex crazy old with his head [TS]

00:40:24   to marry and said very quickly so it's [TS]

00:40:26   cause you don't have to think about is a [TS]

00:40:27   wizard what I decide whether teachers [TS]

00:40:29   always in all caps with periods between [TS]

00:40:32   the letters that crazy old man is [TS]

00:40:33   littered all right so my next my next [TS]

00:40:38   round table question is I give me a [TS]

00:40:41   favorite line from Star Wars your [TS]

00:40:45   favorite line [TS]

00:40:46   I gotta go with I find your lack of [TS]

00:40:48   faith disturbing because it is one of [TS]

00:40:49   the badass easiest of all badass lines [TS]

00:40:52   delivered so calmly while talking [TS]

00:40:54   someone without actually touching them [TS]

00:40:55   without seemingly breaking a sweat sweat [TS]

00:40:57   after the guys tried to chew you out you [TS]

00:40:59   know it's like if the ultimate meeting [TS]

00:41:01   scene like in your meetings at work and [TS]

00:41:03   some guy knowing you and maybe your boss [TS]

00:41:05   is getting on your case or whatever [TS]

00:41:06   don't you wish you could force choke [TS]

00:41:07   someone and calmly say I find your lack [TS]

00:41:09   of faith in my plan to stick to hold [TS]

00:41:13   their cup of starbucks cup of coffee [TS]

00:41:15   that I gotta go with the way go with the [TS]

00:41:18   line that i wrote on the back of the [TS]

00:41:21   exam for my Christianity class in [TS]

00:41:22   college which was hokey religions and [TS]

00:41:25   ancient weapons are no match for a good [TS]

00:41:26   blaster who said you found my professor [TS]

00:41:29   professor didn't like that [TS]

00:41:31   large on actually stole my answer so I i [TS]

00:41:35   will agree with job plus 1 lots of words [TS]

00:41:38   Greg yeah there's just there's too many [TS]

00:41:40   but i'll go with John Wow [TS]

00:41:44   come on guys this is your life and your [TS]

00:41:47   lack of pants disturbing basically [TS]

00:41:49   that's like it and if i had to go for a [TS]

00:41:51   segment I would go for that walking down [TS]

00:41:53   the hallway seen so many good lines that [TS]

00:41:54   the Han Solo uh you know the baby ad lib [TS]

00:41:58   dialogue when when she gets loose [TS]

00:42:01   what I was gonna kill though I was like [TS]

00:42:04   I'm gonna go with the wilhelm scream oh [TS]

00:42:06   alright haha I you know everything [TS]

00:42:13   really that you need to know in life I [TS]

00:42:14   think you can learn from Star Wars for [TS]

00:42:17   example I think you just got a book [TS]

00:42:19   contract first find the controls that [TS]

00:42:22   extend the bridge then shoot the control [TS]

00:42:25   panel that advice will serve you and let [TS]

00:42:28   me tell you come in handy more times and [TS]

00:42:30   and the meta advice have a woman tell [TS]

00:42:32   you what to do at all times [TS]

00:42:33   there is a serious like workman's comp [TS]

00:42:37   problem on the Death Star is being out [TS]

00:42:40   with the classical chasms and the [TS]

00:42:41   bridges but yeah they're carrying this [TS]

00:42:43   number has no railings and all I mean I [TS]

00:42:46   realize show would have our feet there's [TS]

00:42:48   no place osha they were probably you [TS]

00:42:51   know over budget and they gotta build [TS]

00:42:54   the whole big ball when I ever met [TS]

00:42:55   planet killing laser but there's no [TS]

00:42:57   railings anywhere so you just you know [TS]

00:43:00   you stepped through a door that's like [TS]

00:43:01   whoa get to the end of the world they [TS]

00:43:04   lose more stormtroopers that way but you [TS]

00:43:07   know the Emperor had the Senate [TS]

00:43:08   dissolved it stands to reason he's going [TS]

00:43:10   to dissolve all related bureaucracies [TS]

00:43:11   like the space IRS star wars it's not [TS]

00:43:14   it's not it's not silly safety [TS]

00:43:16   regulations what's really easy if you [TS]

00:43:18   need to get rid of somebody's [TS]

00:43:19   incompetent you just gotta be like hey [TS]

00:43:21   joe is it over there and over your right [TS]

00:43:25   thigh [TS]

00:43:26   it's just a painting on glass it's [TS]

00:43:28   actually two feet it seems like a very [TS]

00:43:31   odd safe workplace that's taking a [TS]

00:43:33   picture of of all the mattresses that [TS]

00:43:35   are under the yeah the antenna hanging [TS]

00:43:38   off of the bottom of Cloud City yes [TS]

00:43:40   yeah it it takes away some of the [TS]

00:43:42   mystique well you know like they have [TS]

00:43:44   the spaceports we're like the Millennium [TS]

00:43:45   Falcon parks just open to space with [TS]

00:43:47   magnetic shielding to keep for the [TS]

00:43:48   vacuum of space and killing everybody so [TS]

00:43:50   presumably you just walk to the edge [TS]

00:43:51   there and check your body through the [TS]

00:43:52   magnetic you know she'll be waiting [TS]

00:43:54   plus there's like a 15 amp fuse that's [TS]

00:43:56   holding the whole thing together or [TS]

00:43:58   somebody plugs in their air conditioner [TS]

00:44:00   on the Death Star hairdryers whatsoever [TS]

00:44:02   we just vented a airlock to space along [TS]

00:44:05   had just actually what happens is [TS]

00:44:07   favored is brewing a new pot of coffee [TS]

00:44:09   just goes off [TS]

00:44:11   yeah I find your lack of voltage [TS]

00:44:14   disturbing against regulation that's [TS]

00:44:17   right this is really not up to code [TS]

00:44:22   dan I know you mentioned this we should [TS]

00:44:24   talk a little bit at least about about [TS]

00:44:26   John Williams score for this i have I [TS]

00:44:30   totally have a man-crush on John [TS]

00:44:32   Williams true he's awesome isn't magic [TS]

00:44:35   think you have still got tangles anytime [TS]

00:44:37   I hear the star wars-themed startup I [TS]

00:44:39   there's something something that has [TS]

00:44:42   been hardwired into my brain I have a [TS]

00:44:43   physiological reaction to it you should [TS]

00:44:46   consult a neurologist [TS]

00:44:47   I see them conduct the boston pops up [TS]

00:44:51   with the star wars music anytime and [TS]

00:44:52   it's just a fantastic experience but i [TS]

00:44:55   mean i think this is one of the the [TS]

00:44:57   earlier of his really sort of bombastic [TS]

00:44:59   scores which I think then became sort of [TS]

00:45:01   a a trademark perhaps overused later on [TS]

00:45:03   but it's just is such a great sword and [TS]

00:45:06   John talked a little bit before about [TS]

00:45:08   filling out you know the soundscape and [TS]

00:45:09   if without the music this this movie [TS]

00:45:12   would not be the movie that it is i mean [TS]

00:45:15   it just it would I think it would fall [TS]

00:45:17   flat in a lot of places but there's [TS]

00:45:19   something in the complexity of it the [TS]

00:45:21   the interweaving all the motifs and the [TS]

00:45:24   different themes for the different [TS]

00:45:25   characters that really you know enhances [TS]

00:45:28   the entire experience and and dare I say [TS]

00:45:30   there are there are movies there are [TS]

00:45:32   related movies that without dialogue [TS]

00:45:34   could still be saved by the music [TS]

00:45:36   yeah like the the music in this thing is [TS]

00:45:38   it does acting for the [TS]

00:45:40   actors who either can't or won't do it [TS]

00:45:42   in particular seems and the one that [TS]

00:45:43   comes to mind the clip that i picked for [TS]

00:45:45   possibly bookending the show with is [TS]

00:45:48   that the dual sunsets in Luke has no [TS]

00:45:50   lines that scene in terms of facial [TS]

00:45:52   acting he's not asked to do too much and [TS]

00:45:55   in fact lead into that scene he does [TS]

00:45:56   this child just kick the dirt [TS]

00:45:57   frustration thing which doesn't look [TS]

00:45:59   that great but the music is the actor in [TS]

00:46:01   that scene like that that is like the [TS]

00:46:03   heart of the movie of Luke you know [TS]

00:46:04   wants to get off the planet [TS]

00:46:06   he doesn't have any lines you didn't say [TS]

00:46:07   anything the music does all the talking [TS]

00:46:09   in that scene and that's that's the one [TS]

00:46:11   musical cues home we not the bombastic [TS]

00:46:13   opening that that always gets me is that [TS]

00:46:16   the the binary son said you know strings [TS]

00:46:18   thing with the crescendo that is just [TS]

00:46:20   that's the best musical moment of this [TS]

00:46:22   whole movie that's a group that's a [TS]

00:46:23   great piece I mean that's my point in [TS]

00:46:25   the entire series for me it just [TS]

00:46:27   visually with the music that's the one [TS]

00:46:29   that gets me so this is something [TS]

00:46:31   special [TS]

00:46:35   [Music] [TS]

00:46:42   [Music] [TS]

00:46:48   and no dialogue no acting it's all the [TS]

00:46:51   music i actually went to tosha's station [TS]

00:46:54   to get power converters yeah it makes us [TS]

00:46:56   free makes us forget that whiny boy that [TS]

00:46:58   we saw [TS]

00:46:59   yeah absolutely when I wouldn't listen [TS]

00:47:01   the score you know that last bit too i [TS]

00:47:03   think right at the death star you know [TS]

00:47:05   right when all this sort of the tension [TS]

00:47:07   is is all ramped up there's just a great [TS]

00:47:09   moment there i think in the music as [TS]

00:47:11   well that like I can listen to that [TS]

00:47:13   music and it's hard for me to listen to [TS]

00:47:15   music and do something else at the same [TS]

00:47:16   time because immediately I'm transported [TS]

00:47:18   to the Death Star trench and like oh my [TS]

00:47:20   god this is it does i got to make this [TS]

00:47:21   shot you know and i think it's just it [TS]

00:47:23   raises the tension so much it's so it's [TS]

00:47:26   so evocative that I think it just it [TS]

00:47:28   just transports me how did Lucas and get [TS]

00:47:31   these people and one knows bribery [TS]

00:47:34   blackmail [TS]

00:47:35   I think you you know he has the American [TS]

00:47:38   Graffiti you [TS]

00:47:40   Thank You American Graffiti that's the [TS]

00:47:41   that's his whole résumé other than his [TS]

00:47:42   college movies but he gets people who [TS]

00:47:45   are just absolutely brilliant at what [TS]

00:47:47   they do with he knew lots of people here [TS]

00:47:49   including Francis Ford Coppola and you [TS]

00:47:52   know hehe so he had connection American [TS]

00:47:54   Graffiti made a lot of money and i'm [TS]

00:47:56   american graffiti was a huge hit on a [TS]

00:47:58   lot of these people were not you know [TS]

00:47:59   the people there John Williams while a [TS]

00:48:02   great composer was not right on Williams [TS]

00:48:04   haven't you know to get John Williams [TS]

00:48:05   before he's John Williams is it is a [TS]

00:48:07   bigger achievement than getting him [TS]

00:48:08   after his John Williams yeah true i I've [TS]

00:48:11   been I think you know part of it is like [TS]

00:48:13   like like jason said United he had the [TS]

00:48:15   connections he was in with that [TS]

00:48:16   community and I think they're just you [TS]

00:48:19   know maybe someone it's just luck [TS]

00:48:21   they're like you got Mark Hamill right [TS]

00:48:25   but then also got everything forward so [TS]

00:48:26   you don't know which one is going to [TS]

00:48:28   turn out to be the Harrison Ford and [TS]

00:48:29   which one is going to be the mark hamill [TS]

00:48:30   although I shouldn't say bad things [TS]

00:48:32   about Mark Hamill because i have good [TS]

00:48:33   things to say about him because his [TS]

00:48:36   Joker in Batman the series right there [TS]

00:48:38   you go that I was gonna say anybody who [TS]

00:48:40   says Mark Hamill is not a good actor [TS]

00:48:41   that's just proof that you know you can [TS]

00:48:43   go he can still do some some he's got [TS]

00:48:45   some chops they just happen to be in a [TS]

00:48:46   different direction so the I think it's [TS]

00:48:51   time for us to break the glass and [TS]

00:48:53   discuss the fact that these movies were [TS]

00:48:54   then sort of jute we do her as this for [TS]

00:49:00   our three [TS]

00:49:01   well I'm hoping [TS]

00:49:02   will be the last topic of this special [TS]

00:49:04   two-part uncomfortable i hope it's two [TS]

00:49:07   parts because i was those are great way [TS]

00:49:09   to wreck on [TS]

00:49:09   yes special editions [TS]

00:49:15   I'm just gonna throw it out there [TS]

00:49:18   because we pretend they don't exist but [TS]

00:49:20   I think we have to talk about them they [TS]

00:49:22   made special editions where they cleaned [TS]

00:49:24   up a lot of stuff so a lot of it looks [TS]

00:49:26   better but they also made changes and [TS]

00:49:29   then they did some things that don't [TS]

00:49:30   that are very different and don't [TS]

00:49:32   necessarily look better and i know there [TS]

00:49:34   are some strong feelings about this [TS]

00:49:35   well I want to give some good feelings [TS]

00:49:37   about the special editions this is [TS]

00:49:39   saying that i have good feelings with [TS]

00:49:40   the pickles here's my good feelings [TS]

00:49:41   about the special launch their accuses [TS]

00:49:43   bad 100 now let's this is 0 you'll feel [TS]

00:49:47   better after it so star wars we've all [TS]

00:49:50   seen it and lived in whatever and [TS]

00:49:51   hitting on away and we knew they were [TS]

00:49:53   doing these prequel things the prospect [TS]

00:49:54   of which was unbelievably exciting to [TS]

00:49:57   all of us right because we didn't know [TS]

00:49:58   I'm whoa whoa they did they did what [TS]

00:50:01   yeah so but they have these ads in the [TS]

00:50:03   movie theater for the special editions [TS]

00:50:05   and what they would show is a look at [TS]

00:50:06   one of the one i remember is they show a [TS]

00:50:07   little television screen with our or [TS]

00:50:10   playing on it saying this is how you [TS]

00:50:11   remember Star Wars people because you [TS]

00:50:13   probably didn't see in the theater [TS]

00:50:14   because you were just born around that [TS]

00:50:15   time and i have liked any mono audio [TS]

00:50:17   coming out of it and then they have a CG [TS]

00:50:19   x-wing come flying out of the screen [TS]

00:50:21   shoot a TIE fighter and fly through the [TS]

00:50:23   resulting explosion with all the [TS]

00:50:25   surround sound on and it was like that [TS]

00:50:28   was like you know that little thing to [TS]

00:50:30   show the TV screens like that's not how [TS]

00:50:31   I remember star wars and then exploded [TS]

00:50:33   into that it's like yes that's how I [TS]

00:50:34   remember star wars and they showed us [TS]

00:50:36   the CG and next the typewriters [TS]

00:50:37   everything and it was an exciting [TS]

00:50:39   feeling of like I'm going to get to see [TS]

00:50:41   Star Wars again in the theater [TS]

00:50:42   little did we know what they would do to [TS]

00:50:44   the movie all we knew is that you know [TS]

00:50:45   that explains look really good [TS]

00:50:47   yeah those were really effective ads but [TS]

00:50:50   that's an artifact of the cultural [TS]

00:50:52   ubiquity of Star Wars i mean i remember [TS]

00:50:54   star wars in the theaters that's my [TS]

00:50:56   memory stores not on the TV screen but I [TS]

00:50:58   mean there's a generation of people like [TS]

00:50:59   me who did wrong as the most of it will [TS]

00:51:03   not turn off i'm saying it was exciting [TS]

00:51:05   we were excited to see these special we [TS]

00:51:07   were excited to see if they just [TS]

00:51:08   re-released in theaters period we've [TS]

00:51:09   been great but we're excited to see this [TS]

00:51:11   special new edition of Star Wars and [TS]

00:51:13   they didn't show you all the horrible [TS]

00:51:14   things that they [TS]

00:51:15   due to the movies individuals at that [TS]

00:51:16   point you thought like hey cool we see [TS]

00:51:19   you know it's like Star Wars but better [TS]

00:51:20   right [TS]

00:51:21   and like so let's take let's check them [TS]

00:51:23   off one of the horrible things that [TS]

00:51:24   we're done reduces first I have says the [TS]

00:51:26   worst 320 shoot cars that's the worst [TS]

00:51:29   terrible and it's worse because so [TS]

00:51:31   needless to say then reconnected to [TS]

00:51:33   having it be sort of like get hit on [TS]

00:51:36   kind of twitches and and they shoot [TS]

00:51:38   someone that was in the original special [TS]

00:51:40   edition looks terrible there it's bad [TS]

00:51:41   technically it's bad plot-wise yeah okay [TS]

00:51:45   so there's there's a doubles there's [TS]

00:51:48   their little creatures underfoot [TS]

00:51:50   everywhere there's little flourishes [TS]

00:51:51   they're just extraneous like throughout [TS]

00:51:53   the entire movie establishing shot of [TS]

00:51:55   Mos Eisley when they fly in and they [TS]

00:51:57   have a big dinosaur by and I guy punches [TS]

00:51:59   a robot out of the air and all sorts [TS]

00:52:01   yeah there is a shot [TS]

00:52:03   there's one shot that I really love from [TS]

00:52:05   the special edition which you know it [TS]

00:52:07   doesn't bother me that it's not in the [TS]

00:52:09   the original movie like I'm fine without [TS]

00:52:10   it but like as a shot i love the shot of [TS]

00:52:12   the phone can actually taking off from [TS]

00:52:14   authorized Lee there's like an overhead [TS]

00:52:15   shot that looks better than the original [TS]

00:52:17   shot yes it's just a great-looking shot [TS]

00:52:19   and it's kinda again i said i just love [TS]

00:52:22   the Millennium Falcon so much like it [TS]

00:52:23   just it's so cool to see it like in [TS]

00:52:25   action [TS]

00:52:25   it's a little early 90 CGS a lot of [TS]

00:52:27   these things I mean it's not yeah a lot [TS]

00:52:29   of it looks dated now which is they [TS]

00:52:31   don't look as good on Mike [TS]

00:52:33   no they don't I didn't mind the Haunted [TS]

00:52:35   job scene just because it had a Harrison [TS]

00:52:38   Ford you know it had been shot original [TS]

00:52:41   I don't think it's necessary and I think [TS]

00:52:43   job looks pretty bad but it was the clip [TS]

00:52:47   of Harrison Ford from the original [TS]

00:52:49   filming that we hadn't seen before but [TS]

00:52:50   it looks like a deleted scene you know [TS]

00:52:53   well it looks like something we [TS]

00:52:54   shouldn't be seen because this [TS]

00:52:55   performance is not that great and the [TS]

00:52:56   horrible effects and walking over and it [TS]

00:52:58   lately duplicated in the in the grito [TS]

00:53:01   seem it's like it's some the Lucan big [TS]

00:53:04   scene though that they didn't know [TS]

00:53:06   eventually found its way to youtube from [TS]

00:53:08   on Tatooine [TS]

00:53:09   yeah that didn't add anything it like [TS]

00:53:11   that's the stuff they cut it for a [TS]

00:53:12   reason you know right right of course [TS]

00:53:14   but it's still need to see it you've [TS]

00:53:15   seen every year you know square [TS]

00:53:16   centimeter of this movie again and again [TS]

00:53:18   because it doesn't need to be in the [TS]

00:53:19   movie though [TS]

00:53:20   and you're right i just ate it's an [TS]

00:53:22   extra scene collectors thing I have a [TS]

00:53:24   copy of you like the role playing game 4 [TS]

00:53:26   star wars and they had like photo in [TS]

00:53:28   certain parts of it and there's a photo [TS]

00:53:30   in there of a scene that I couldn't [TS]

00:53:32   remember from the movie which is from [TS]

00:53:34   Jedi it's like a sandstorm we're getting [TS]

00:53:36   back on the money fuckin and like which [TS]

00:53:37   i think is a cutscene from Jedi and I [TS]

00:53:39   was just like well where is this from [TS]

00:53:41   like how can i find this where is it [TS]

00:53:43   like that and to see a movie that like [TS]

00:53:45   like greg did like you know inside and [TS]

00:53:47   out like you know every scene every line [TS]

00:53:49   every little detail and all of a sudden [TS]

00:53:50   someone tells you about the way there's [TS]

00:53:52   this other hole like you know a [TS]

00:53:53   10-minute scene and you'll be like what [TS]

00:53:55   it's like looking at looking at the [TS]

00:53:57   storyboards or the the production art [TS]

00:54:00   you know it's like oh wow you know I [TS]

00:54:02   collected all that the cards bedsheets [TS]

00:54:04   the double album that folded open this [TS]

00:54:08   the visual book that was just a [TS]

00:54:11   collection of stills from the movie I i [TS]

00:54:14   devoured this stuff and then the special [TS]

00:54:16   editions came along and and just kind of [TS]

00:54:18   shit all over it [TS]

00:54:20   I mean you know and I was an age where [TS]

00:54:22   like I was 17 or something and so you [TS]

00:54:25   know watching that was it was really [TS]

00:54:26   exciting at the time and I think it took [TS]

00:54:27   a while before we started to think like [TS]

00:54:30   one you know maybe this is her tampered [TS]

00:54:32   with something I think you know it sort [TS]

00:54:34   of felt wrong right away the ring they [TS]

00:54:36   put around the death star explosion of [TS]

00:54:38   some stuff that's all wrong i don't like [TS]

00:54:40   all wrong way although we did we did [TS]

00:54:41   take delight in coming out of the movie [TS]

00:54:43   theater from watching star wars and [TS]

00:54:45   saying loudly to everybody I can't [TS]

00:54:46   believe the death star actually blew up [TS]

00:54:48   the moon this time we were assholes i [TS]

00:54:53   did like the the the idea of the the [TS]

00:54:55   things they couldn't do in the dogfight [TS]

00:54:57   that they try to do better [TS]

00:54:59   that was a noble effort I so I think the [TS]

00:55:02   cg dated too badly for really but at [TS]

00:55:05   least at least that was like you can [TS]

00:55:06   imagine that they would have filmed that [TS]

00:55:08   scene like that whereas for example the [TS]

00:55:10   establishing shot mostly they never [TS]

00:55:12   would have found that like that with [TS]

00:55:13   those camera moves and always kept it [TS]

00:55:15   was generally never thought I was just [TS]

00:55:16   showing off right and that that feels [TS]

00:55:19   that feels cheap yet and it's not it [TS]

00:55:21   doesn't fit in with the movie they would [TS]

00:55:23   have shot those angles they wouldn't [TS]

00:55:24   shop those those actions they would have [TS]

00:55:26   done those camera moves just from a [TS]

00:55:27   different movie it's it doesn't belong [TS]

00:55:28   there at all yeah so the I think see I [TS]

00:55:34   don't even have the originals in any [TS]

00:55:36   form now i think the the DVD [TS]

00:55:39   transference of the laser disc is what i [TS]

00:55:41   have in those [TS]

00:55:41   you know i think i have those and I may [TS]

00:55:43   have those somewhere that's what I used [TS]

00:55:45   to have now they did actually release a [TS]

00:55:47   DVD version right that that has the [TS]

00:55:49   original untampered versions on it [TS]

00:55:52   yeah they're not like its standard-def [TS]

00:55:54   horrible quality [TS]

00:55:55   well it's exactly what my understanding [TS]

00:55:57   is it's exactly what's on the laser [TS]

00:55:59   discs [TS]

00:55:59   yeah but his worst quality than [TS]

00:56:01   laserdisc quality like they heavily [TS]

00:56:02   heavily compressed inch and shoved it on [TS]

00:56:05   my just watched it on a laserdisc and i [TS]

00:56:07   will say the quality is not that great [TS]

00:56:09   know about the quality of my DVD as i [TS]

00:56:12   have the DVD transfers of that when i [TS]

00:56:13   watch that as compared to the hidden [TS]

00:56:15   original new hope that's on one of my [TS]

00:56:17   official star wars dvds that the [TS]

00:56:19   transfers look better I don't they clean [TS]

00:56:21   them up or something that it's they that [TS]

00:56:23   is surprising to me I mean I know [TS]

00:56:25   they've already went on HDTV and they're [TS]

00:56:27   all standard yeah you know I have to [TS]

00:56:29   zoom in on mine just take it even fill [TS]

00:56:31   up the screen because it's widescreen [TS]

00:56:33   it's a widescreen format laserdisc but [TS]

00:56:35   laser discs were only 43 so you get bars [TS]

00:56:38   all the way around [TS]

00:56:39   what is best in your mind if I can't [TS]

00:56:43   really watch it as easily in my no oh [TS]

00:56:44   yes you can write i believe when they [TS]

00:56:47   release the blu-rays they're going to [TS]

00:56:48   release a version of the movie but it's [TS]

00:56:50   not going to be cleaned up in any way of [TS]

00:56:52   the original I don't think that's the [TS]

00:56:54   case i'll be very surprised i mean they [TS]

00:56:55   really so there's also technically [TS]

00:56:58   there's another edition right like there [TS]

00:57:00   because there's the specialist and I [TS]

00:57:01   have like a set i have two sets of VHS [TS]

00:57:04   tapes i have the original like you know [TS]

00:57:06   early nineties version i guess and then [TS]

00:57:08   these but i do have a special edition [TS]

00:57:10   version on VHS and i believe the [TS]

00:57:13   versions that were then subsequently [TS]

00:57:14   released on DVD have further changes in [TS]

00:57:17   them because yet I for example they have [TS]

00:57:19   hayden christensen in there there's an [TS]

00:57:20   ultimate edition i guess is what I'm [TS]

00:57:22   sorry [TS]

00:57:23   Hayden so maidens con Hayden Planetarium [TS]

00:57:27   i don't know i keep forgetting that [TS]

00:57:29   version and that's the version that I've [TS]

00:57:31   got your brain protecting you from it's [TS]

00:57:33   a leave the fact i actually don't even [TS]

00:57:35   own star wars on DVD which feels weird [TS]

00:57:38   to me [TS]

00:57:39   wow I mean I bought the laser discs with [TS]

00:57:43   the extent of transferring them to my [TS]

00:57:45   computer and making dvds out of them and [TS]

00:57:47   then was stymied on several occasions [TS]

00:57:49   where i try to actually do that's just [TS]

00:57:51   go download them they're easier to find [TS]

00:57:53   for now yes but I own the [TS]

00:57:55   I got a you have no idea so I acquired a [TS]

00:57:59   laserdisc player that my best friend's [TS]

00:58:01   dad just happened to be throwing away [TS]

00:58:03   after i already had the laser discs and [TS]

00:58:05   was like how the hell am I ever coming [TS]

00:58:07   so i have this latest player which is [TS]

00:58:10   dedicated to playing Star Wars it sits [TS]

00:58:12   on a shelf unless it's fucking stuck for [TS]

00:58:14   words [TS]

00:58:15   Wow yes that's commitment that is [TS]

00:58:18   commitment i should be committed [TS]

00:58:22   yes that is for sure well what else any [TS]

00:58:25   anything that we haven't already covered [TS]

00:58:28   for for this in our special epic [TS]

00:58:30   two-part podcast almost certainly but [TS]

00:58:33   we'll have to just come back into a star [TS]

00:58:35   trek is still better [TS]

00:58:35   oh no how you just wait you just SAT [TS]

00:58:40   through two hours just so you can pop [TS]

00:58:42   that out didn't you [TS]

00:58:43   victory is mine haha [TS]

00:58:46   can you imagine having a two-hour [TS]

00:58:47   conversation about any of the Star Trek [TS]

00:58:49   movies seriously stuck no its got milk [TS]

00:58:51   is bad huh [TS]

00:58:53   he's almost as bad as Stockman healthy [TS]

00:58:55   guy is pretty much worse [TS]

00:58:58   that's the less interesting one who [TS]

00:59:00   wears a shirt with no patterns on the [TS]

00:59:02   stock McNulty I mean don't get me wrong [TS]

00:59:06   I like Star Wars it's very nice but uh [TS]

00:59:09   huh and scrapping all these bad but it [TS]

00:59:13   never really get it so I'm excited to [TS]

00:59:17   rewatch Star Wars movies right and then [TS]

00:59:18   when i rewatch them there's always parts [TS]

00:59:21   where i am incredibly bored and I think [TS]

00:59:24   this is much better in my mind then was [TS]

00:59:26   supposed to star trek one you know [TS]

00:59:28   well start required which is riveting [TS]

00:59:31   still going on it let's not lower [TS]

00:59:33   celebrating his level [TS]

00:59:35   yes oh I'm not saying it's bad i'm just [TS]

00:59:38   saying that it is not i don't have a [TS]

00:59:42   special laser disc player to watch for [TS]

00:59:44   example i admit that i am a little bit [TS]

00:59:47   on the obsessive side just a time tab so [TS]

00:59:54   it's fun and it's fine but it's just [TS]

00:59:55   that it never really get captured my [TS]

00:59:57   imagination I'm a Star Trek fan I have [TS]

00:59:57   imagination I'm a Star Trek fan I have [TS]

01:00:00   breitling like most of you I've written [TS]

01:00:01   to star trek spec script [TS]

01:00:03   uh-huh Star Wars is a seminal cultural [TS]

01:00:06   event know and i agree with you and I [TS]

01:00:08   think that it changed the world [TS]

01:00:10   I think that the star wars as a cultural [TS]

01:00:13   phenomenon is more interesting than the [TS]

01:00:16   movies themselves the movies are you [TS]

01:00:20   trying to include the second movie in [TS]

01:00:22   that and even our own exists because of [TS]

01:00:25   the movies i know but it's it's taken [TS]

01:00:27   out a greater importance than the movies [TS]

01:00:29   itself there's a lot of people who are [TS]

01:00:30   wrong and they say empires a better [TS]

01:00:33   movie than Star Wars now there and know [TS]

01:00:35   how to run because because when you had [TS]

01:00:40   going into Empire you are coming from [TS]

01:00:42   Star Wars going into Star Wars you're [TS]

01:00:44   coming from zero your grading on degree [TS]

01:00:46   of difficulty will discuss in the next [TS]

01:00:48   episode if you could be on the go from a [TS]

01:00:52   world without star wars is not this is [TS]

01:00:54   not diving there's no degree of [TS]

01:00:56   difficulty because into a world with [TS]

01:00:58   Star Wars it changes everything [TS]

01:01:01   yes if you're doing the back half gainer [TS]

01:01:03   its core differently than if you just [TS]

01:01:04   doing straight you know yeah but on a [TS]

01:01:06   diving term yeah could you try i wanted [TS]

01:01:09   to back out of the ordinary game woman [TS]

01:01:11   yes but we understand the concept degree [TS]

01:01:13   of difficulty and this is the argument [TS]

01:01:15   being made [TS]

01:01:16   yes I design because it matters if you [TS]

01:01:19   do with this is that it's not just a [TS]

01:01:21   movie that's not how that's not how [TS]

01:01:23   things are graded and how life works [TS]

01:01:25   oh it is how life works it's the impact [TS]

01:01:27   thankies don't get half a World Series [TS]

01:01:28   win because they had babers get the [TS]

01:01:30   whole win [TS]

01:01:31   not in my world they don't want it is [TS]

01:01:33   easier for you had babe ruth so we're [TS]

01:01:35   going into a third hour then no no it [TS]

01:01:37   will save that save that for the Empire [TS]

01:01:39   podcast we can discuss its place in the [TS]
