00:00:07   the incomparable podcast episode 64 [TS]

00:00:12   December 2010 [TS]

00:00:15   we're back on the incomparable podcast [TS]

00:00:20   I'm Jason Snell I'm apparently the host [TS]

00:00:23   of the podcast I viewed myself as one of [TS]

00:00:25   the cast of characters until then more [TS]

00:00:27   and referred to me as the host and him [TS]

00:00:29   is the guest host last time so all right [TS]

00:00:32   this week i'm the host of the podcast [TS]

00:00:34   until then more and opposes me and and [TS]

00:00:37   disposes of my body so I would like to [TS]

00:00:39   welcome the most dire the parasites [TS]

00:00:42   oh nice that's a nice metaphor that [TS]

00:00:45   Voice you heard is one of my guests [TS]

00:00:46   today because as the host I have guessed [TS]

00:00:48   Greg NOS who who has suddenly become a [TS]

00:00:51   regular fixture in this podcast [TS]

00:00:53   well yeah boy it's good to hear from you [TS]

00:00:56   Greg not that good though and also on [TS]

00:00:58   the line is John siracusa hey John [TS]

00:01:00   welcome back Jason I just hope you don't [TS]

00:01:02   let this hosting thing go to your head [TS]

00:01:04   yeah i had with power seriously well you [TS]

00:01:06   know I had a big deal more into host the [TS]

00:01:08   video game podcast mostly because i was [TS]

00:01:11   busy with the nanowrimo you know writing [TS]

00:01:14   a novel for the month and also because i [TS]

00:01:15   felt like i was a complete amateur when [TS]

00:01:17   it came to to video games out after [TS]

00:01:19   having heard the podcast I felt like [TS]

00:01:21   that stop yeah i really could have done [TS]

00:01:24   and you made a good point that I was a [TS]

00:01:25   total amateur when it came to horror [TS]

00:01:27   movies but I still hosted that podcast [TS]

00:01:29   that was largely because i couldn't get [TS]

00:01:30   very many people to be on it because all [TS]

00:01:33   of our podcast participants are wimps [TS]

00:01:35   and don't like we're moving so including [TS]

00:01:37   myself so I was stuck I was like a [TS]

00:01:40   seat-filler that any way across the [TS]

00:01:43   table for me here in San Francisco is [TS]

00:01:45   serenity Caldwell [TS]

00:01:46   hello welcome hello from across the [TS]

00:01:48   internet dan moore and joins us to hide [TS]

00:01:50   an hi Jason thanks for having me [TS]

00:01:53   so as we as we move toward the toward [TS]

00:01:57   the Christmas holiday we're in the [TS]

00:01:58   holiday season now Hanukkah has past [TS]

00:02:00   Christmases forthcoming the new year [TS]

00:02:02   that's how it works by the way if you [TS]

00:02:05   weren't aware the December there are [TS]

00:02:06   series of holidays some of which are [TS]

00:02:08   more real and summer kind of totally [TS]

00:02:10   made up getting the ones are made of [TS]

00:02:12   politics was my birthday which is your [TS]

00:02:14   birthday ass when is your birthday [TS]

00:02:15   birthday is on the fourteenth you'll be [TS]

00:02:18   14 right [TS]

00:02:19   oh yes come on 15 sorry she said ok [TS]

00:02:24   blaring it really cure that I come out [TS]

00:02:26   really after the harry potter [TS]

00:02:28   fanfiction thing there's nowhere to go [TS]

00:02:30   but up no it's true i can just mock you [TS]

00:02:33   all for making fun of me yes please do [TS]

00:02:35   mockery we're no strangers to mockery in [TS]

00:02:37   Our Lives speaking of our childhood so I [TS]

00:02:41   want to talk about the holidays and [TS]

00:02:42   where I wanted to start really was with [TS]

00:02:45   with the holiday presents Christmas [TS]

00:02:48   presence i certainly have memories of [TS]

00:02:50   getting all sorts of gifts and also if [TS]

00:02:52   not getting gifts that I really [TS]

00:02:54   desperately wanted when I was a kid and [TS]

00:02:56   I i imagine that the people who [TS]

00:02:58   participate in this podcast would all [TS]

00:02:59   have memories of kind of a gift that in [TS]

00:03:01   hindsight were a little bit on the geeky [TS]

00:03:03   side that they that they received her or [TS]

00:03:05   even failed to receive so I thought I [TS]

00:03:08   would start there which is what what [TS]

00:03:10   geeky holiday gifts do you remember from [TS]

00:03:12   your from your childhood Greg nice i [TS]

00:03:14   hear you have a fantastic story to tell [TS]

00:03:17   tonight you're not been up to me you [TS]

00:03:20   just pointed to the left field bleachers [TS]

00:03:21   and i'm going to bunt [TS]

00:03:23   huh when I was a young and so I eighteen [TS]

00:03:28   fifties you may have been where you may [TS]

00:03:31   you may have guessed that I enjoyed [TS]

00:03:34   video games quite a bit and it was in in [TS]

00:03:37   October 1977 atari released the 2600 and [TS]

00:03:41   it was the hottest thing going and i [TS]

00:03:43   believe it was a year later I played the [TS]

00:03:44   friends I died you know it broken [TS]

00:03:48   several of the joysticks played combat [TS]

00:03:51   and adventure and all the great games [TS]

00:03:53   from the first year and I desperately [TS]

00:03:54   wanted one just because I knew that [TS]

00:03:56   that's what was going to be my entire [TS]

00:03:58   life was that single piece of hardware [TS]

00:03:59   and so roundabout November 1978 i began [TS]

00:04:06   a campaign of of desperately begging my [TS]

00:04:08   parents for it i don't remember how much [TS]

00:04:10   it was but it seemed like an infinite [TS]

00:04:11   amount of money but I said I want [TS]

00:04:13   nothing else I want nothing else for the [TS]

00:04:15   rest of the year my birthday is a month [TS]

00:04:16   later I don't know anything for that I [TS]

00:04:17   just want 2600 and and whatever [TS]

00:04:20   cartridges it came with and we'll worry [TS]

00:04:22   about other games later i can swap them [TS]

00:04:24   with friends and come Christmas Eve [TS]

00:04:27   there was a box that appeared under the [TS]

00:04:29   tree and it was exactly the right shape [TS]

00:04:31   and it was exactly the right size for [TS]

00:04:32   the 2600 and so before the word squee [TS]

00:04:36   was invented i actually went ahead and [TS]

00:04:37   squeeze need [TS]

00:04:39   we didn't have term a term for it back [TS]

00:04:41   then and I I had visions of sugarplums [TS]

00:04:44   dancing in my head and they were all [TS]

00:04:45   playing 2600 games and so I went to bed [TS]

00:04:48   in the next morning I woke up and I was [TS]

00:04:50   an activation game wasn't sugarplums was [TS]

00:04:53   evidently you were had sugar plums [TS]

00:04:56   thrown at you and they exploded [TS]

00:04:57   something like no low-resolution [TS]

00:05:00   explosions and do [TS]

00:05:02   yeah we had a very orderly christmas at [TS]

00:05:04   my house and we would take turns and one [TS]

00:05:07   person would get a gift and another [TS]

00:05:08   person would get a gift and another [TS]

00:05:09   person would get a gift and and digital [TS]

00:05:12   I nap hehe yes it was like Christmas in [TS]

00:05:15   east germany is sort of like a cafeteria [TS]

00:05:18   for presence [TS]

00:05:20   everything is just a stale bread and a [TS]

00:05:22   small piece of ham and finally it rolled [TS]

00:05:26   around to the last gift for me and what [TS]

00:05:28   i thought was the last gift for me and [TS]

00:05:30   so my mother goes over and picks up the [TS]

00:05:32   box from the back of the tree and she [TS]

00:05:34   carries it over to me and she puts it [TS]

00:05:35   into my hands and says Greg this is for [TS]

00:05:37   you to give to your sister [TS]

00:05:40   oh i thought well okay fine fine [TS]

00:05:44   they're making it hers I have no problem [TS]

00:05:47   with that i will get to play it it's in [TS]

00:05:49   the house everybody shares because we're [TS]

00:05:50   in the People's Republic of East Germany [TS]

00:05:52   and it is a socialist paradise and so I [TS]

00:05:55   handed her and she opens it up and it's [TS]

00:05:58   a pair of roller skates and you can [TS]

00:06:01   actually still here out in the deepness [TS]

00:06:03   of space my heart breaking [TS]

00:06:06   you couldn't tell the difference between [TS]

00:06:07   an atari 2600 and a pair of roller [TS]

00:06:10   skates what was the lightweight i was i [TS]

00:06:12   with the right away that's way too heavy [TS]

00:06:14   for 2600 I didn't know how much they [TS]

00:06:16   weigh to be reminded you did not hold [TS]

00:06:18   your present deduction skills as a child [TS]

00:06:21   I can see that they only had they had [TS]

00:06:23   its ears you know you could go and used [TS]

00:06:25   to play that series the series edition [TS]

00:06:26   of the 2600 but it was bolted down so i [TS]

00:06:29   couldn't pick it up and anyway that it I [TS]

00:06:32   I was I was it was the cruelest thing my [TS]

00:06:35   parents have ever done to me and to this [TS]

00:06:37   day I think they think it's funny and so [TS]

00:06:40   I went through the next year all of 1979 [TS]

00:06:42   desperate to get 2600 and then I got it [TS]

00:06:48   that year for Christmas before Christmas [TS]

00:06:50   yes one year later so you have an entire [TS]

00:06:52   year [TS]

00:06:52   where you're like your sisters roller [TS]

00:06:54   skates and cursing that they didn't play [TS]

00:06:56   combat the fire still burned your [TS]

00:06:59   parents know that you felt this way up [TS]

00:07:01   until that point or only I think they [TS]

00:07:02   felt I think they felt a little bad they [TS]

00:07:04   knew they were screwing with me but i [TS]

00:07:05   think they felt bad though [TS]

00:07:07   oh I doubt they still considered as [TS]

00:07:08   funny as and I think that's really [TS]

00:07:10   formed my parenting philosophy today it [TS]

00:07:13   is mocking derived and and torture your [TS]

00:07:16   children as much as possible do give [TS]

00:07:18   your kids a presence that are carefully [TS]

00:07:20   weighted to pose as other presidents i [TS]

00:07:23   make my kids by their own expensive [TS]

00:07:25   electronics [TS]

00:07:25   alright I spirit will they learn the [TS]

00:07:28   value of things then yes because and [TS]

00:07:31   they made my two eldest children just [TS]

00:07:33   bought themselves ipod touches the [TS]

00:07:35   fourth generation and we had a little [TS]

00:07:38   talk beforehand that they if they drop [TS]

00:07:40   them and broke them that was on them and [TS]

00:07:42   they went ahead and did it anyway so our [TS]

00:07:44   database timing around the house now [TS]

00:07:46   like so hey look at this cool thing i [TS]

00:07:48   found into the couch [TS]

00:07:49   yes and they play spy games with all [TS]

00:07:52   that someone will sneak into a room and [TS]

00:07:53   start surveilling someone else and [TS]

00:07:55   facetiming it going back to home base [TS]

00:07:57   what I was often get them ready for [TS]

00:07:59   their futures adults and 21st century [TS]

00:08:01   america i bet i just recently got back [TS]

00:08:04   from a business trip and i facetimed [TS]

00:08:06   with my children it was it was really [TS]

00:08:08   quite wonderful for the first 30 seconds [TS]

00:08:09   when they had something to say and then [TS]

00:08:11   they would get bored with me like in [TS]

00:08:13   person and wonder what they just like [TS]

00:08:14   lace half the ipod walk away if they [TS]

00:08:17   would start going they would go back to [TS]

00:08:19   watching TV or you no good having a [TS]

00:08:22   conversation with somebody else in the [TS]

00:08:23   room so did your parents were they [TS]

00:08:26   I in the video game podcast i think john [TS]

00:08:28   said that his parents were fundamentally [TS]

00:08:30   opposed to video games in the house [TS]

00:08:31   where your parents opposed to it or did [TS]

00:08:34   they just not want to get it or thought [TS]

00:08:35   it was too expensive i think it fell on [TS]

00:08:38   the this is a fad side [TS]

00:08:40   mmm i mean i had only really been hard [TS]

00:08:42   guide my first contact with computers [TS]

00:08:45   was going over to a friend's house who [TS]

00:08:47   had an apple to not an apple to plus but [TS]

00:08:48   an apple to and sitting there and [TS]

00:08:50   playing games for hours and hours and [TS]

00:08:51   hours and and that was to my memory [TS]

00:08:54   right before I started asking for the [TS]

00:08:55   2600 and it built from there and I [TS]

00:09:00   thought you know so I was rabbit a few [TS]

00:09:02   months later when November rolled around [TS]

00:09:03   I started asking for this and they saw [TS]

00:09:04   that the price was like 200 [TS]

00:09:06   dollars in late seventies dollars which [TS]

00:09:08   is what thirty forty thousand dollars [TS]

00:09:10   today roughly and good math there but [TS]

00:09:13   when i had when i had fixated on this [TS]

00:09:15   thing for a full year that I think they [TS]

00:09:17   thought that I had I had earned it just [TS]

00:09:20   through my own desperation I and [TS]

00:09:24   coincidentally that's how i got married [TS]

00:09:26   as well [TS]

00:09:26   the power of desperation he seemed he [TS]

00:09:29   seems like an easy bet it the ROI on the [TS]

00:09:32   2600 given that that it has shaped the [TS]

00:09:35   past 30 or so years and has been the [TS]

00:09:38   foundation of my career and I everything [TS]

00:09:41   that I have quoted received unquote [TS]

00:09:43   since then it was a pretty good [TS]

00:09:45   investment [TS]

00:09:46   yeah also I mean my dad didn't want us [TS]

00:09:50   to get one because you thought it would [TS]

00:09:51   break the TV i'm not going but I'm still [TS]

00:09:54   not clear on what he thought that what [TS]

00:09:55   you like it releases demon spirits into [TS]

00:09:58   the team you can no longer do anything [TS]

00:09:59   else would would brew the tea would be [TS]

00:10:01   confused that I'm not made for this [TS]

00:10:03   crazy video game stuff i made for live [TS]

00:10:05   action would break weather usually [TS]

00:10:07   beaverton dangers you could run a game [TS]

00:10:09   for too long with the static screens on [TS]

00:10:11   the 2600 nearly video i really doubt [TS]

00:10:13   that he was concerned about burn-in but [TS]

00:10:15   but he didn't think it would break the [TS]

00:10:17   TV and of course in those days you [TS]

00:10:18   didn't even have like a coaxial cable we [TS]

00:10:20   had like the little twin lead thing that [TS]

00:10:22   you to unscrew and then put in the [TS]

00:10:24   adapter that really our effort every [TS]

00:10:26   slide and then it would go to come on i [TS]

00:10:28   can't remember how old I was when when [TS]

00:10:30   we got an Atari but it was probably in [TS]

00:10:34   that it was probably like 80 or 79 or [TS]

00:10:36   something like that that's about right [TS]

00:10:38   so did you have a camera or is your dad [TS]

00:10:40   afraid it was still your spirit haha [TS]

00:10:42   good question and I don't know the [TS]

00:10:44   answer it didn't [TS]

00:10:46   yes but I let it out later delivery [TS]

00:10:49   you mentioned breaking atari joystick by [TS]

00:10:51   the way and this isn't a video game [TS]

00:10:52   podcast but still I i remember breaking [TS]

00:10:55   an atari joystick and desperately trying [TS]

00:10:58   to figure out how to fix it when you [TS]

00:11:00   opened it up right yeah white plastic [TS]

00:11:03   ring oh the white plastic ring yeah that [TS]

00:11:05   had snapped and you try and glue it back [TS]

00:11:06   together and you screw it back together [TS]

00:11:07   and it lasts for another 30 seconds and [TS]

00:11:09   it breaks again right and then you just [TS]

00:11:10   try to play the game knowing that if you [TS]

00:11:12   go with the top laughs wrestle her it'll [TS]

00:11:15   it'll sag and it might [TS]

00:11:16   work but it's not or you take it off [TS]

00:11:19   entirely and you've got those little [TS]

00:11:20   metal buttons the little metal buttons [TS]

00:11:22   and you just try to fake it with the [TS]

00:11:23   little buttons which does also doesn't [TS]

00:11:25   work a little membrane buttons [TS]

00:11:27   good times good that's I tried [TS]

00:11:29   everything I could to fix the joysticks [TS]

00:11:30   I i actually got out matches and tried [TS]

00:11:32   to melt the plastic wow yeah which the [TS]

00:11:35   fumes probably affected me just as much [TS]

00:11:36   as the video games kid [TS]

00:11:38   well they really didn't have a strong [TS]

00:11:39   roi then another lie that explains a lot [TS]

00:11:42   look at the colors so pretty and also [TS]

00:11:45   taught you about advertising on [TS]

00:11:46   television where you saw that crazy [TS]

00:11:47   commercial that would run with a guy and [TS]

00:11:49   the the hardhat stick into the IBM and [TS]

00:11:51   you like dammit that crazy-looking [TS]

00:11:52   definitely makes the story controller [TS]

00:11:54   you try yourself and you see that [TS]

00:11:55   sometimes sometimes things on TV don't [TS]

00:11:57   tell the truth speaking of Christmas [TS]

00:11:59   present there was a whole secondary [TS]

00:12:00   market for heavy-duty joysticks for the [TS]

00:12:02   2600 I mean you can get joysticks that [TS]

00:12:04   weighed three or four pounds and had [TS]

00:12:06   arcade sighs buttons on them [TS]

00:12:08   Wow is that like the same market as the [TS]

00:12:12   the keyboards that make the really loud [TS]

00:12:13   noises that people people will be allies [TS]

00:12:16   now you're making fun of me because I [TS]

00:12:18   want one of those this year [TS]

00:12:19   oh really is that on your holiday list [TS]

00:12:21   for this year the they're like seventy [TS]

00:12:23   dollars the aftermarket clones of the [TS]

00:12:25   old IBM right huge keyboards that rich [TS]

00:12:28   single from barebone software has one of [TS]

00:12:30   those i believe i had i have no one to [TS]

00:12:33   twenty years ago at my first real [TS]

00:12:34   corporate job and you could hear me like [TS]

00:12:36   down the hall and around the corner [TS]

00:12:39   well I friends who love that keyboard or [TS]

00:12:41   the the athletic equipment and I say is [TS]

00:12:44   on my desk captn well at what I say to [TS]

00:12:46   them is I work in an office with people [TS]

00:12:48   I can't use that chief heard that humans [TS]

00:12:51   would come and kill me if i use that [TS]

00:12:53   they beat me to death with the keyboard [TS]

00:12:55   keyboard that you have to do that they [TS]

00:12:57   are ya [TS]

00:12:58   you added serious tapping and you just a [TS]

00:13:01   little self for trouble locking [TS]

00:13:02   clackety-clack I was watching you love [TS]

00:13:04   it is the tactile sensation of actually [TS]

00:13:06   pushing something down then clicks and [TS]

00:13:08   forces your finger back up because the [TS]

00:13:10   spring is so strong so that's what you [TS]

00:13:11   want it that's what i want for christmas [TS]

00:13:13   i want that an amazon gift cards lots of [TS]

00:13:16   amazon gift guides with which you can [TS]

00:13:18   buy more keyboards hot that's just after [TS]

00:13:21   SEIU's anymore is is is free money to [TS]

00:13:23   Amazon will dump the change in the house [TS]

00:13:26   and you take him to like coinstar and [TS]

00:13:28   you can either get cash [TS]

00:13:29   back at nine percent interest rate or p [TS]

00:13:32   or you can get free Amazon gift card [TS]

00:13:34   right right or itunes i think yeah I've [TS]

00:13:37   done that [TS]

00:13:38   hey that's fine i spent a lot of money [TS]

00:13:39   on amazon and itunes so that works then [TS]

00:13:42   what about you [TS]

00:13:42   you got a LG a particularly fund holiday [TS]

00:13:46   gift memory and Treadwell on the on the [TS]

00:13:48   theme of parents tricking children there [TS]

00:13:52   are there have been a couple because my [TS]

00:13:53   birthday is so close to christmas i [TS]

00:13:55   never ran into the problem where you [TS]

00:13:57   either got big birthday present or big [TS]

00:13:59   Christmas present and then one or two of [TS]

00:14:01   the holidays just kind of flopped [TS]

00:14:02   together [TS]

00:14:03   I was always able to kind of get like [TS]

00:14:05   separate little presence but I use it to [TS]

00:14:07   my advantage a lot to combine big-ticket [TS]

00:14:09   items that i knew i wanted that I knew I [TS]

00:14:11   couldn't get away with just to go to [TS]

00:14:13   Christmas and I think not the original [TS]

00:14:16   ipod cuz i got the original ipod i think [TS]

00:14:18   in I mean maybe early December but the [TS]

00:14:21   ipod photo when that came out I remember [TS]

00:14:24   being like all right you know it has a [TS]

00:14:27   color screen and if you do a little bit [TS]

00:14:29   of hacking to it you can actually maybe [TS]

00:14:31   make it play videos and oh it's so cool [TS]

00:14:34   and so I went around pastoring my father [TS]

00:14:37   for at least two or three months being [TS]

00:14:38   like yes please please please buy this [TS]

00:14:40   for me i know i I'm my original five [TS]

00:14:42   gigs just too small and too bulky and [TS]

00:14:44   what if someone at school steals it and [TS]

00:14:46   this one smaller I get made up all sorts [TS]

00:14:48   of different reasons and then I'd is [TS]

00:14:50   more valuable so nobody will steal [TS]

00:14:52   exactly sure let's let's go with that [TS]

00:14:55   but I didn't get it for my birthday so I [TS]

00:14:57   was like okay so they're probably [TS]

00:14:59   waiting for it for christmas which they [TS]

00:15:00   wish they did in the past I that's how i [TS]

00:15:02   got my first imac well I'm since my [TS]

00:15:04   friend in these stories after the [TS]

00:15:06   terrible things parents to their [TS]

00:15:07   children ok go ahead without so [TS]

00:15:10   Christmas morning rolls around they're [TS]

00:15:11   always runs a different things and I [TS]

00:15:13   like I knew exactly what the ipod photo [TS]

00:15:16   packaging looks like as I'd you know i [TS]

00:15:17   cased out the store and I was just like [TS]

00:15:19   all right fingers crossed and there was [TS]

00:15:22   no Ricky there was no square box under [TS]

00:15:25   under the tree they're just there a [TS]

00:15:27   couple of like big macy's boxes and [TS]

00:15:29   things like that so our last yet know [TS]

00:15:31   the last the last box is a big macy's [TS]

00:15:34   box and I'm like damn it i got a coat or [TS]

00:15:37   a you know like a hat or something [TS]

00:15:39   that's when I wasn't nearly as obsessed [TS]

00:15:41   about coats i was more blessed [TS]

00:15:43   or hats yeah it was more about [TS]

00:15:44   technology so I pick up the macy's box [TS]

00:15:47   and I open it and inside is a laptop box [TS]

00:15:50   and I'm like wait what I open i open the [TS]

00:15:53   laptop box and there's another box and I [TS]

00:15:56   opened that box there's another box I [TS]

00:15:58   open inside his Russian nesting dolls [TS]

00:16:00   pretty much inside for a human head [TS]

00:16:03   yeah inside of the ipod photo packaging [TS]

00:16:06   and I was like holy crap they got me an [TS]

00:16:08   iPod photo and I like I freaked out and [TS]

00:16:11   I you know open the packaging is as [TS]

00:16:13   delicately as I could because i still [TS]

00:16:15   like the packaging and open up the thing [TS]

00:16:17   and there's no ipod in the iphone whole [TS]

00:16:21   package it's a code it's just look at [TS]

00:16:23   socks [TS]

00:16:24   it's nothing and I got the ipod photo [TS]

00:16:29   marks they got a GI products [TS]

00:16:31   yeah you can put your old ipod in here [TS]

00:16:34   and pretend yes and so I i look at my [TS]

00:16:38   father who is this very devilish the [TS]

00:16:40   evil grin on his face and he's like well [TS]

00:16:44   you know I I I wanted to see if it was [TS]

00:16:48   just as good as you said it was and he [TS]

00:16:50   pulls it out of his pocket and he's been [TS]

00:16:52   playing with it for the last two hours [TS]

00:16:54   unbeknownst to me while we're opening [TS]

00:16:56   presence so he unwrapped the thing [TS]

00:17:00   rewrapped it without the item and had [TS]

00:17:03   the entire hit in his pocket the entire [TS]

00:17:05   time and so then he put it back in the [TS]

00:17:06   box and handed to you and said give this [TS]

00:17:08   to your sister [TS]

00:17:09   yeah i think i might have that is my [TS]

00:17:16   father has it has a long history of [TS]

00:17:18   doing that when I got my first guitar [TS]

00:17:19   there was a scavenger hunt in 14 parts [TS]

00:17:23   which which led to the trunk of his car [TS]

00:17:26   which sounds like actually there isn't [TS]

00:17:29   it was the body that goes with the head [TS]

00:17:33   that was not exactly in the nesting doll [TS]

00:17:36   back anytime buddy Adam my my dad likes [TS]

00:17:39   likes playing tricks and but that's yeah [TS]

00:17:43   lots lots of evil parenting stories on [TS]

00:17:45   the podcast today that's that is crazy [TS]

00:17:48   my parents never did I think anything [TS]

00:17:50   like that my uncle once brought me a box [TS]

00:17:53   that was enormous and it had eight boxes [TS]

00:17:54   inside with padding in [TS]

00:17:56   in the end what it was was a two-headed [TS]

00:17:57   nickel [TS]

00:18:00   yeah yeah and where two bodies in his [TS]

00:18:02   trunk yeah after he put a matter yeah [TS]

00:18:05   John what about you and remember bola [TS]

00:18:09   memorable stories from holidays gone by [TS]

00:18:11   I like that [TS]

00:18:12   start by thanking ran for making us all [TS]

00:18:14   feel old again because her childhood [TS]

00:18:16   story was about the i-pod photo class [TS]

00:18:19   that was like last year wasn't i was [TS]

00:18:21   added I was 15 I was at that apple event [TS]

00:18:23   with the with Bono and the edge of the [TS]

00:18:26   at the california theatre in san jose [TS]

00:18:28   when they rolled that thing out [TS]

00:18:30   oh I was just I was just looking at the [TS]

00:18:32   opening of the apple store today in two [TS]

00:18:34   thousand yeah everyone and I'm like hey [TS]

00:18:36   I went to I went to the glendale store [TS]

00:18:38   opening and then Dan more and says yeah [TS]

00:18:41   you were like 13 weren't you [TS]

00:18:43   and then I said no comment yeah our own [TS]

00:18:47   been boy jack will cover that event for [TS]

00:18:49   macworld I remember him him making [TS]

00:18:51   comments about the people in line [TS]

00:18:54   actually I'm a little afraid that [TS]

00:18:57   doesn't sound like Bennett no not at all [TS]

00:18:59   not at all okay so John yes the rest of [TS]

00:19:01   us we've established that the rest of us [TS]

00:19:02   are old i think we've established and [TS]

00:19:04   i'm almost every week but no one noticed [TS]

00:19:07   it wasn't for her because we all have [TS]

00:19:08   similar memories and I know follow that [TS]

00:19:10   it's like ran just play along and say [TS]

00:19:12   that you love in the macro carry out [TS]

00:19:14   your Atari your nintendo gameboy what's [TS]

00:19:18   that with Oh pawn your original pong [TS]

00:19:21   game i did get it a powerbook duo for [TS]

00:19:24   Christmas one year so i can i can talk [TS]

00:19:27   about my old Mac stuff [TS]

00:19:29   hand me downs but I can talk about them [TS]

00:19:30   like their new alright sure it's not [TS]

00:19:35   it's not working [TS]

00:19:36   John what about you practicing whatever [TS]

00:19:37   is back longer deeper into time yeah [TS]

00:19:40   well I've got two things one of them is [TS]

00:19:42   not really geeky but i have to throw it [TS]

00:19:43   out there and the other one is geeky so [TS]

00:19:46   the non-key one is to quote a christmas [TS]

00:19:49   story is the greatest Christmas gift [TS]

00:19:51   I've ever received or ever would receive [TS]

00:19:53   in contrast to all these parents who are [TS]

00:19:55   cruel and torture their children this is [TS]

00:19:58   the reverse type of story so when I was [TS]

00:20:00   about ten i wanted a bike for Christmas [TS]

00:20:03   but I didn't just want a regular bike i [TS]

00:20:05   was already corning my [TS]

00:20:07   taste for extremely expensive things and [TS]

00:20:09   I wanted a specific bike which was [TS]

00:20:11   nineteen eighty-four mongoose [TS]

00:20:12   Californian which I think was like two [TS]

00:20:15   hundred fifty dollars in nineteen [TS]

00:20:16   eighties money i don't know how much was [TS]

00:20:18   but since I was 10 years old it's just [TS]

00:20:19   an astronomical amount of money and I [TS]

00:20:21   remember I asked for it because i had [TS]

00:20:22   seen someone in the neighborhood had one [TS]

00:20:24   and I didn't expect to get it and spend [TS]

00:20:26   time begging I didn't you know I do all [TS]

00:20:30   the things that I would later do to [TS]

00:20:31   ensure that i got expensive presence and [TS]

00:20:36   I we went through the whole Christmas [TS]

00:20:37   morning and I didn't get it and then at [TS]

00:20:38   the end of Christmas morning they took [TS]

00:20:39   me out to the porch and there was the [TS]

00:20:42   bike and I still have the bike and it's [TS]

00:20:44   still in my basement and even though [TS]

00:20:45   it's not a gift to talk about it in a [TS]

00:20:48   literal mileage for a gift i rode that [TS]

00:20:51   bike for when i was ten years old until [TS]

00:20:52   practically I had no license to drive a [TS]

00:20:54   car and it went like six weeks just [TS]

00:20:56   about [TS]

00:20:58   I'm not New York you know when you're [TS]

00:21:00   seventeen seventy years is a long time [TS]

00:21:01   my formative years were spent on that on [TS]

00:21:03   the hard plastic seat of that bicycle [TS]

00:21:05   what kind of city was it was like a [TS]

00:21:07   banana seat or not we don't want to [TS]

00:21:10   start with your x-bike a mongoose you [TS]

00:21:12   know it's got the that ridiculously [TS]

00:21:14   uncomfortable hard plastic seat for [TS]

00:21:16   racing because it was lightweight but it [TS]

00:21:18   definitely gave me a taste for expensive [TS]

00:21:19   things because it was very different [TS]

00:21:22   from like that you know happy that you [TS]

00:21:23   would get down at toys r us or whatever [TS]

00:21:24   this was like a serious bike with ball [TS]

00:21:26   bearings and everything but you do drive [TS]

00:21:28   some crazy expensive car now i would if [TS]

00:21:31   i had the money feel free if anyone [TS]

00:21:32   would like me to drive you crazy [TS]

00:21:33   expensive color on those animals and [TS]

00:21:35   links on the podcast and instead of [TS]

00:21:37   driving a crazy expensive the car I i [TS]

00:21:39   read car magazines and I read about [TS]

00:21:41   crazy expensive cars not which I [TS]

00:21:43   actually own it so my second gift is [TS]

00:21:46   Giggy and this is long after the phase [TS]

00:21:48   when I had shifted into high gear in [TS]

00:21:51   terms of doing whatever it took to get [TS]

00:21:53   the increasingly expensive gifts that I [TS]

00:21:55   wanted and I like ran my birthday's in [TS]

00:21:56   december so I always pulled the [TS]

00:21:58   combination birthday Christmas thing to [TS]

00:22:00   get presence there were financially you [TS]

00:22:02   know unfeasible otherwise the way to go [TS]

00:22:05   it's like it's like something you'd see [TS]

00:22:06   on Wall Street where it's like well now [TS]

00:22:08   if we take a coupon from the birthday [TS]

00:22:09   and then we apply that to the Christmas [TS]

00:22:11   ya know [TS]

00:22:12   is it was there was a hard hard sell and [TS]

00:22:14   this is a special trip computer [TS]

00:22:15   equipment i was I always had my heart [TS]

00:22:17   set on computer equipment so i have like [TS]

00:22:19   months ahead of time i have the catalog [TS]

00:22:20   that have you know Mac user magazine [TS]

00:22:23   maybe with an article by old man Jason [TS]

00:22:24   Snelling it they would open up the net [TS]

00:22:26   connection page that was in the [TS]

00:22:27   beginning the seven page spread from [TS]

00:22:28   that connection remember that yeah [TS]

00:22:30   what's wrong with the headset she was my [TS]

00:22:32   warehouse not reason haha i bet on those [TS]

00:22:36   aster yeah so at any rate i would add [TS]

00:22:39   the the catalogs that would come in the [TS]

00:22:41   mail I would circle the stuff i would [TS]

00:22:42   find the best price you know and i would [TS]

00:22:44   say this is what I want and I know it's [TS]

00:22:45   a lot of money and the other thing I [TS]

00:22:47   would pull is that i would say look I [TS]

00:22:48   know this is really expensive but I got [TS]

00:22:50   Christmas I've got my birthday and i'll [TS]

00:22:52   pay for some portion of it with my own [TS]

00:22:53   money so i will also be saving my money [TS]

00:22:55   all year long to add to the giant pool [TS]

00:22:57   of money to pay for this thing [TS]

00:22:58   wow what the the what was this amazing [TS]

00:23:01   thing that I wanted for 450 dollars [TS]

00:23:03   again and you know 1986-87 mind just an [TS]

00:23:06   astronomical amount for an individual [TS]

00:23:07   person for a present under the tree like [TS]

00:23:09   a hard drive with an 800 k floppy drive [TS]

00:23:12   external hard drive for my mac plus and [TS]

00:23:15   you know why that was that was such a [TS]

00:23:17   significant gift because you wouldn't [TS]

00:23:18   have to swap discs you understand you [TS]

00:23:20   can put your OS disk in onedrive and [TS]

00:23:22   your applications the other drive and it [TS]

00:23:24   was like you had doubled the room to put [TS]

00:23:26   forget about hard drives are [TS]

00:23:27   entertaining fantasy part i have a mac [TS]

00:23:28   plus with one floppy drive that was 800 [TS]

00:23:30   k which was you know twice as big as [TS]

00:23:32   foreigners are pretty good but man if [TS]

00:23:33   I'd to 800 k discs i would just put two [TS]

00:23:35   discs in there and I would never need [TS]

00:23:37   anything else in my entire life so I i [TS]

00:23:39   burned through huge amount of goodwill [TS]

00:23:41   and nagging at the end of the time i got [TS]

00:23:43   a you know 800k floppy this drive for [TS]

00:23:46   400 and something dollars and that was [TS]

00:23:49   probably the best gift I ever possibly [TS]

00:23:51   got that look back and I'm like oh how [TS]

00:23:53   could I have been so excited about a [TS]

00:23:54   floppy drive but I was man i was excited [TS]

00:23:56   more excited when I was in my hard drive [TS]

00:23:58   soon so upgrading from a cat cassette [TS]

00:24:01   tape to a disk drive changed my life [TS]

00:24:03   yeah but this isn't afraid it's very [TS]

00:24:05   very sad isn't it [TS]

00:24:07   when I think like what you can get for [TS]

00:24:09   450 dollars you know get an entire ipod [TS]

00:24:12   touch that has more computing power and [TS]

00:24:14   storage than 70 Mac plus this pilot heap [TS]

00:24:17   can get two of them being the John so [TS]

00:24:21   while I'm I your story amazes and [TS]

00:24:24   confuses me [TS]

00:24:26   did you did you end up having to kick in [TS]

00:24:29   money of your own [TS]

00:24:30   oh yeah I kicked in over a hundred [TS]

00:24:32   dollars to get towards that presents a [TS]

00:24:34   serious and potentially cash value with [TS]

00:24:37   your parents [TS]

00:24:38   well i would say look here's here's the [TS]

00:24:39   best price i could find for it and you [TS]

00:24:42   know here is like the relative cost of [TS]

00:24:44   the gifts you getting for the other [TS]

00:24:45   children in the family [TS]

00:24:46   he's on an offset that yeah because he [TS]

00:24:49   couldn't be like I'm not gonna get you [TS]

00:24:50   you know well we know your sister wants [TS]

00:24:53   this and your brother wants that and you [TS]

00:24:54   want some 450 dollar computer thing that [TS]

00:24:56   I didn't understand the stuff they're [TS]

00:24:58   like we don't know what this is [TS]

00:24:59   we don't know why cost 450 dollars [TS]

00:25:01   what's wrong with the computer that we [TS]

00:25:02   have it already cost the Brazilians was [TS]

00:25:04   a presentation with like poster boards [TS]

00:25:06   on a tripod teachers look it was a cam [TS]

00:25:08   sister to talk up like to ask for [TS]

00:25:10   something really expensive because i [TS]

00:25:11   needed on top here that's not how it [TS]

00:25:14   worked and then they would do anything [TS]

00:25:15   to make sure that i didn't get this [TS]

00:25:16   because they thought they thought it was [TS]

00:25:17   done to me try explaining in any [TS]

00:25:19   eighties of floppy drive to anyone in [TS]

00:25:21   your family doesn't know anything about [TS]

00:25:22   computers connected already has a floppy [TS]

00:25:24   drive John what exactly one and that [TS]

00:25:26   computer costs like 25 hundred dollars [TS]

00:25:28   like astronomically expensive [TS]

00:25:29   twenty-five hundred dollars in a tease [TS]

00:25:31   money like we already bought this [TS]

00:25:32   expensive computer for the family [TS]

00:25:34   quote-unquote and i spent you know all [TS]

00:25:36   my time on it no one else was allowed to [TS]

00:25:37   touch it in or do they understand it but [TS]

00:25:39   now I want anything else eighties money [TS]

00:25:41   had a picture of rick astley on it was a [TS]

00:25:44   tease money like i had Michael J Fox on [TS]

00:25:48   it intensely is actually well rick [TS]

00:25:50   astley was on the two but Michael J Fox [TS]

00:25:51   was on the 50 [TS]

00:25:53   it's just it's funny because I did [TS]

00:25:55   something very very similar and on top [TS]

00:25:57   of that it's funny because my dad and I [TS]

00:25:59   were the two big technology geeks in the [TS]

00:26:01   family [TS]

00:26:02   his birthdays the day after mine so [TS]

00:26:05   sometimes like when my dad got the wall [TS]

00:26:07   street i remember he was basically [TS]

00:26:09   pestering my mother [TS]

00:26:11   unlike all right let's let's uh let's I [TS]

00:26:13   know this is a lot of money but let's [TS]

00:26:15   put it aside so I can buy this wall [TS]

00:26:17   street powerbook g3 because it's really [TS]

00:26:19   awesome and it's an upgrade from the duo [TS]

00:26:21   and I'm like okay I can get the duo if I [TS]

00:26:24   can pester mom to help you get the wall [TS]

00:26:26   street so it became kind of like a joint [TS]

00:26:28   tag-team effort and very very silly [TS]

00:26:31   things but totally with the with the [TS]

00:26:33   poster boards and the spreadsheets and [TS]

00:26:34   bargaining with the siblings always [TS]

00:26:37   happened every year [TS]

00:26:39   Wow ourselves a mercenary time in my [TS]

00:26:42   life definitely well I mean you gotta do [TS]

00:26:44   what you gotta do I'm just impressed [TS]

00:26:45   with your with your attention to detail [TS]

00:26:46   or something like that so we're talking [TS]

00:26:48   about a presence that we got our or [TS]

00:26:51   apparently negotiated or horrible things [TS]

00:26:54   our parents did to us to mock us and not [TS]

00:26:56   give us presents those are the various [TS]

00:26:57   topics that we've got on the podcast [TS]

00:26:59   Diane Warren what about you do you have [TS]

00:27:02   a particularly for horrifying or [TS]

00:27:04   gratifying story i have two stories that [TS]

00:27:07   I thought of my head one which was and [TS]

00:27:09   this is kind of indistinct because from [TS]

00:27:11   when i was younger i remember getting [TS]

00:27:13   some sort of transformer when I was [TS]

00:27:16   probably i don't know seven or something [TS]

00:27:18   seven or eight and i remember i have [TS]

00:27:21   very big memories all I remember is that [TS]

00:27:23   it turned into a car and it's like the [TS]

00:27:25   Micronauts right [TS]

00:27:26   transformers yeah i can just look under [TS]

00:27:28   before before Michael Bay decided to [TS]

00:27:32   just didn't you know desecrate my entire [TS]

00:27:34   childhood so we were having this and I [TS]

00:27:38   remember being in my uncle's place in [TS]

00:27:40   upstate New York where we spend [TS]

00:27:41   Christmas and I was like I'm so psyched [TS]

00:27:43   about this and i was driving it all [TS]

00:27:45   around the floors and everything and I [TS]

00:27:47   just thought this was the coolest thing [TS]

00:27:48   ever [TS]

00:27:49   and then on the way home we got a we got [TS]

00:27:51   a flat tire on the drive back to Boston [TS]

00:27:54   and it was dark it was right raining or [TS]

00:27:57   snowing or something we hammer we pulled [TS]

00:27:59   over understand this bridge and somehow [TS]

00:28:00   for some reason and i'm still unclear [TS]

00:28:03   how and why this happens in my memory [TS]

00:28:05   that the it got left behind at the place [TS]

00:28:08   we pulled over on the road and so I [TS]

00:28:12   never saw you like we're carrying around [TS]

00:28:13   and thought I think I must have been so [TS]

00:28:15   yeah anyways I don't even know why I got [TS]

00:28:16   out of my car frankly at that point but [TS]

00:28:18   I don't have a transformer and it's [TS]

00:28:21   raining outside and it turns into a car [TS]

00:28:23   and you're stopped on the side of the [TS]

00:28:24   road I mean but I mean we're talking [TS]

00:28:26   like like you know six seven o'clock at [TS]

00:28:27   night it's just pitch black outside to [TS]

00:28:29   like run around you know the mass pike [TS]

00:28:31   or something so it's not like the kind [TS]

00:28:33   of place you're going to get out and [TS]

00:28:34   play on the side of the road but anyway [TS]

00:28:36   repressed memory in there i think yeah [TS]

00:28:38   exactly what i would actually happen we [TS]

00:28:40   could do a whole movie out of this but I [TS]

00:28:41   mean I remember just being crushed is [TS]

00:28:43   the thing like I mean not physically [TS]

00:28:44   obviously but I I just remember being so [TS]

00:28:46   sad about this and you know wanting to [TS]

00:28:48   go back and look for it and and [TS]

00:28:50   well there's no you know we can't go [TS]

00:28:51   back there is no way to go back there [TS]

00:28:53   and then I was just I was just you know [TS]

00:28:55   inconsolable for four years afterwards [TS]

00:28:58   so I can't really remember what I got [TS]

00:28:59   for most of the rest of my childhood as [TS]

00:29:00   christmas brother sister should focus on [TS]

00:29:02   your transformer I was so focused that [TS]

00:29:04   lost it but i will say that the other [TS]

00:29:05   the other present that I got which was [TS]

00:29:07   later in my life this is you know after [TS]

00:29:09   this is like my junior year of college [TS]

00:29:11   was I you know I did the Christmas [TS]

00:29:15   morning with my parents and you know [TS]

00:29:18   that my mother put some stuff in the [TS]

00:29:19   stocking like normally awesome candy and [TS]

00:29:21   things like that and then headed soul [TS]

00:29:23   like little small Q boxes like few [TS]

00:29:25   inches by a few inches i assume you know [TS]

00:29:28   maybe she got me like a mug or something [TS]

00:29:29   and I opened it up and it was an [TS]

00:29:33   original ipod in the year that the [TS]

00:29:35   original ipod came out and this was a [TS]

00:29:38   total under surprised me i hadn't asked [TS]

00:29:40   for one [TS]

00:29:40   i mean like i had mentioned it to them [TS]

00:29:42   like because I remember this was the [TS]

00:29:44   year how's Marilyn yeah so it came out [TS]

00:29:45   like october and I was thinking actually [TS]

00:29:48   didn't didn't come out until now it was [TS]

00:29:50   announced it was now see in October [TS]

00:29:51   because i remember being in the library [TS]

00:29:53   at school when I when they announced it [TS]

00:29:56   yeah and I remember being in a room with [TS]

00:29:58   Steve genuine oh yeah I don't read that [TS]

00:30:00   in Jason yeah well anyway so we rubbed [TS]

00:30:04   it was a it was i I you know I think a [TS]

00:30:10   lot of times when I was a kid my parents [TS]

00:30:11   would ask me what i want for christmas [TS]

00:30:13   or I tell them you know I want this toy [TS]

00:30:14   or whatever and so there wasn't always a [TS]

00:30:17   lot it was like nice but that wasn't [TS]

00:30:18   always a lot of surprise to it right [TS]

00:30:21   this is probably the only gift i think [TS]

00:30:23   i've gotten ever in which I was really [TS]

00:30:25   just like shocked like speechless [TS]

00:30:27   because i could not believe because it [TS]

00:30:29   was so expensive for one thing like at [TS]

00:30:30   that point is like 500 bucks right [TS]

00:30:31   that's like I couldn't believe that they [TS]

00:30:33   would buy this for me you know [TS]

00:30:35   especially because it's like a luxury [TS]

00:30:36   thing and I just was sort of it totally [TS]

00:30:39   taken aback and but they totally right [TS]

00:30:42   there like odeon would love this [TS]

00:30:43   yeah absolutely nail like I was so [TS]

00:30:45   excited like I remember taking it home [TS]

00:30:47   like on the drive back to home in my own [TS]

00:30:52   car they were driving separately i try [TS]

00:30:55   plugged it in and it actually like [TS]

00:30:56   crashed place the look within the first [TS]

00:30:59   like five minutes of using it [TS]

00:31:01   I was like oh my god it's broken this is [TS]

00:31:03   terrible that's the worst thing ever so [TS]

00:31:04   I like pulled over into a gas station [TS]

00:31:06   and I might put up a meet back when they [TS]

00:31:08   still came with manuals like pulling out [TS]

00:31:10   the manual like flipping through like [TS]

00:31:11   there must be something I can do and I [TS]

00:31:13   finally figured out that you could like [TS]

00:31:14   restarted by holding down the menu [TS]

00:31:16   button in the center button and then it [TS]

00:31:19   came back up and I used it the rest of [TS]

00:31:21   the ride home and I was just like this [TS]

00:31:23   is this is the coolest thing ever and i [TS]

00:31:25   was i was so excited you're rich ipods [TS]

00:31:27   came with pre played like a playlist [TS]

00:31:30   right well that was I to know came with [TS]

00:31:32   the one that they I think the ones they [TS]

00:31:35   gave out if they're the ones yeah they [TS]

00:31:36   discussed once museum don't mind I have [TS]

00:31:39   my University's i have my laptop there [TS]

00:31:42   so i also had like like loaded up all my [TS]

00:31:44   stuff from my old powerbook g3 onto it [TS]

00:31:46   but it was just I was just blown away [TS]

00:31:48   with how cool this was like I can pick [TS]

00:31:50   whatever song I want to listen to i [TS]

00:31:52   didn't have to trade my cds and work [TS]

00:31:53   with all those burn cds i had made and [TS]

00:31:55   man it was just it was probably about [TS]

00:31:57   the coolest gift I've ever gotten so [TS]

00:31:59   basically any more interference win at [TS]

00:32:02   the end of that story and be that you [TS]

00:32:03   left it on the side of the road you try [TS]

00:32:05   again [TS]

00:32:06   oh my god i would have I just would have [TS]

00:32:08   not gone home and welcome no he would [TS]

00:32:10   have gotten off the mass pike and [TS]

00:32:11   doubled back and then going on that you [TS]

00:32:13   know that if you can't tell ya how are [TS]

00:32:15   ya yeah I mean I wait you're seven they [TS]

00:32:18   don't leave your I've that would be [TS]

00:32:21   unfortunate maybe we're chasing [TS]

00:32:22   girlfriend harm another a tractor at 7i [TS]

00:32:26   no no I didn't drive the tractor at [TS]

00:32:30   seven tractor who wants to drive the [TS]

00:32:32   tractor i drove the tractor it seven it [TS]

00:32:34   is fun to have we i drove the lawn mower [TS]

00:32:36   is a euphemism [TS]

00:32:38   yeah that's cause this code for [TS]

00:32:40   something that we had about my barn and [TS]

00:32:42   drove the tractor actually what I what I [TS]

00:32:44   because I pretty much drove the tractor [TS]

00:32:46   through my entire childhood I really [TS]

00:32:48   wish [TS]

00:32:49   here now because he could go off on that [TS]

00:32:51   and that would be that would be [TS]

00:32:53   enjoyable process i'm glad he's not here [TS]

00:32:55   because he would take that far too [TS]

00:32:58   extreme and on with it and run with it [TS]

00:33:00   into the born with the tractor dan it's [TS]

00:33:03   funny when you talk about not knowing [TS]

00:33:05   how that transformer got lost we my wife [TS]

00:33:10   is Jewish so we do Hanukkah and [TS]

00:33:11   Christmas and my son just got a kirby [TS]

00:33:16   speaking of video games again he got a [TS]

00:33:18   stuffed Kirby which he specifically [TS]

00:33:20   asked for [TS]

00:33:21   I think just in a litany of things that [TS]

00:33:23   he thought were great and then we got [TS]

00:33:25   him one he couldn't he was beside [TS]

00:33:26   himself it was the greatest present ever [TS]

00:33:28   cause it's like these exist and i have [TS]

00:33:30   one [TS]

00:33:31   how is that possible how are they [TS]

00:33:32   listening to me yes we were listening to [TS]

00:33:34   you son i but he takes that he took that [TS]

00:33:37   everyone to school they're not allowed [TS]

00:33:39   school stuffed animals can be at school [TS]

00:33:40   unless they just stay in your bag when [TS]

00:33:41   they're at school but he wanted to do [TS]

00:33:43   that thing has not left his side other [TS]

00:33:45   than going to school since we got it for [TS]

00:33:48   him and that's what I thought when you [TS]

00:33:49   talk about the Transformers like it's so [TS]

00:33:51   awesome you might not even realize that [TS]

00:33:52   you just got the death grip on it [TS]

00:33:54   what about the death grip because then [TS]

00:33:55   you can let it go and leave it by the [TS]

00:33:57   side of the road but you know just to [TS]

00:33:58   take it with you everywhere cause it's [TS]

00:33:59   so cool you didn't love the transformer [TS]

00:34:01   and I try there was the most i add slip [TS]

00:34:05   out of your hands [TS]

00:34:06   I'm thinking of a toy story montage [TS]

00:34:08   where a single tears rolling down the [TS]

00:34:10   Transformers cheap as you pull by this [TS]

00:34:12   as you know in toy story they just [TS]

00:34:14   turned into a car and drive away to the [TS]

00:34:16   yeah very small car [TS]

00:34:17   yeah very loving Autobots said if you [TS]

00:34:19   know it's it's funny because you [TS]

00:34:21   mentioned the the doing doing Hanukkah [TS]

00:34:23   and up my dad's Jewish my mother's loops [TS]

00:34:26   my mother celebrates Christmas and so I [TS]

00:34:31   had the same sort of like bargaining [TS]

00:34:32   thing with like well maybe I can get [TS]

00:34:34   this for hanukkah but maybe I can get [TS]

00:34:35   this for Christmas and I just suddenly [TS]

00:34:37   remembered when thinking about that I [TS]

00:34:38   wanted like because I would try to pole [TS]

00:34:40   I know John was talking about the [TS]

00:34:41   pulling the like the Christmas and [TS]

00:34:43   birthday present combined i would i [TS]

00:34:45   would try to pull the Hanukkah and [TS]

00:34:46   Christmas present combined like always [TS]

00:34:48   just getting this one thing and like you [TS]

00:34:50   don't need to get me any other Hanukkah [TS]

00:34:51   or Christmas presents and I remember [TS]

00:34:53   that the one thing that I wanted at one [TS]

00:34:54   point was a the castle from Ultron there [TS]

00:35:00   is this like place at Castle white white [TS]

00:35:03   Castle I just looked it up online [TS]

00:35:04   because I was like I had a memory of it [TS]

00:35:05   and looked it up like that is exactly [TS]

00:35:07   what it was like [TS]

00:35:08   except it looks much now i look at it [TS]

00:35:10   and go it looks really lame daddy crappy [TS]

00:35:14   toy I remember that but it looked [TS]

00:35:15   awesome at the time but you know I was [TS]

00:35:18   awesome was that were the metal diecast [TS]

00:35:19   of Ultron line yeah we important that [TS]

00:35:22   you get in the flea market I still have [TS]

00:35:23   those somewhere i had was drastic i have [TS]

00:35:26   the entire plastic Voltron as the [TS]

00:35:28   american one that's not yeah not as good [TS]

00:35:30   not as good but it's in pretty good [TS]

00:35:31   shape i think it's missing like one wing [TS]

00:35:33   or something [TS]

00:35:35   that's a bad thing about the diecast [TS]

00:35:36   metal ones they were delicate and broke [TS]

00:35:38   really easily [TS]

00:35:39   I remember my friend had one of those [TS]

00:35:40   couldn't you argue that that by saying [TS]

00:35:42   just don't give me any presents except [TS]

00:35:44   this one thing you're basically saying [TS]

00:35:45   hey cancel Hanukkah roll it all up in [TS]

00:35:48   Christmas well he's getting a double is [TS]

00:35:50   like hey I've got two different you know [TS]

00:35:52   all that is is not double the amount now [TS]

00:35:54   there's a time I mean as anyone relevant [TS]

00:35:56   as ever celebrate Hanukkah as a child [TS]

00:35:58   knows there's a time that you try to [TS]

00:35:59   string it out and get a present for [TS]

00:36:01   every day for all eight days and like [TS]

00:36:04   each day and like it's you know maybe I [TS]

00:36:07   think I might have pulled up once with [TS]

00:36:08   my parents gave me like a small thing [TS]

00:36:10   everyday but ok i'm also never have [TS]

00:36:13   always been spoiling our children [TS]

00:36:15   because we actually gave him something [TS]

00:36:16   everyday [TS]

00:36:17   nobody to love and you can just skip my [TS]

00:36:19   ass you know isn't Monica doesn't have [TS]

00:36:21   to look back at the biblical record and [TS]

00:36:23   you can see the macro phoenix at the [TS]

00:36:25   mcafee skip tonight I don't think so [TS]

00:36:28   maybe I didn't know they were there like [TS]

00:36:30   pineapple work so they were just about [TS]

00:36:32   to be slaughtered I don't know the kirby [TS]

00:36:33   stuffed animals figured Kurt Kirby [TS]

00:36:36   passed over the firstborn and I don't [TS]

00:36:39   know again I don't really know the [TS]

00:36:40   people very well you put the blood of [TS]

00:36:42   kirby on your friend haha wow it is [TS]

00:36:46   turning to the horror podcast all the [TS]

00:36:48   info from the video game podcast for the [TS]

00:36:50   horrifying car that's religion and I was [TS]

00:36:52   a fine line sometimes so so when I was [TS]

00:36:54   when I was a kid I I as Greg alluded to [TS]

00:36:56   earlier micronauts were my favorite toys [TS]

00:36:59   and my the one the big present to [TS]

00:37:02   mention this because i know it comes up [TS]

00:37:04   every now and then the the rocket tubes [TS]

00:37:07   I don't know if anybody remembers rocket [TS]

00:37:08   tubes what rocket tubes was it wasn't [TS]

00:37:10   even my crops for those figures rocket [TS]

00:37:12   tubes wasn't even like that it was like [TS]

00:37:14   they found a toy and said hey that's a [TS]

00:37:16   good idea let's make that a micronauts [TS]

00:37:17   toy and it was a bunch of plastic tubes [TS]

00:37:20   that you snap together and there was a [TS]

00:37:22   base this plastic base you plug in and [TS]

00:37:25   it basically had a fan inside of it so [TS]

00:37:28   you'd stick the tubes onto the base and [TS]

00:37:30   then and it was like almost like a [TS]

00:37:32   racetrack except it was a a tube of and [TS]

00:37:35   it had this little like capsule that was [TS]

00:37:37   a basically a plastic oval that fit of [TS]

00:37:42   micro not in it you could stick a micro [TS]

00:37:43   not inside and then you dropped it in [TS]

00:37:45   the tube and turn on the fan and it [TS]

00:37:48   created air [TS]

00:37:49   pressure inside the tube and it would [TS]

00:37:50   shoot the guy around like it was a [TS]

00:37:53   racecar except it was all air pressure [TS]

00:37:55   in this pneumatic tube [TS]

00:37:58   maybe they had like leftover pneumatic [TS]

00:38:00   tubes from them 15 like what the hell we [TS]

00:38:03   gonna do with pneumatic tube technology [TS]

00:38:04   nobody was that Hawaii thataway I [TS]

00:38:06   diecast plastic toy brilliant [TS]

00:38:09   let's play nineteen seventies [TS]

00:38:11   drive-through banking window so that [TS]

00:38:12   exactly what was the 70 so they just [TS]

00:38:14   listening party from flow bees maybe it [TS]

00:38:16   was just called banking window then Greg [TS]

00:38:19   because it was the seventies and and so [TS]

00:38:22   but the cool thing about it was that it [TS]

00:38:24   had two modes it had the mode where you [TS]

00:38:25   it was like a racetrack and you could [TS]

00:38:27   like shoot you you flip the switch and [TS]

00:38:29   the air would we go from being diverted [TS]

00:38:31   to being pumped into the tube in it and [TS]

00:38:33   the thing would shoot around and that [TS]

00:38:34   was kinda cool but it got boring but the [TS]

00:38:36   other thing you could do is it had a the [TS]

00:38:39   the place where you diverted it was on [TS]

00:38:41   top and it was also that same size kind [TS]

00:38:44   of plastic ring so you could take the [TS]

00:38:46   straight pieces and pop them on the top [TS]

00:38:48   and stick the guy down in and then flip [TS]

00:38:50   the switch and shoot the guy out with [TS]

00:38:52   air pad apparent fly across the room and [TS]

00:38:54   basically what happens when he reaches [TS]

00:38:56   the end of the track because it can't be [TS]

00:38:57   a certain way to pumping air pretty it [TS]

00:38:59   is it was a circle it was a circle i [TS]

00:39:02   think that was just-- and like a side [TS]

00:39:04   vent yapping yeah exactly [TS]

00:39:06   ok so it would go around it was slow [TS]

00:39:08   down and speed up and it would and you [TS]

00:39:10   know it was it was I think back down its [TS]

00:39:12   like none of the things that i liked [TS]

00:39:14   about the actual toys were in this [TS]

00:39:15   product and yet man that TV commercial [TS]

00:39:17   was awesome are the TV commercials [TS]

00:39:20   always the best part like you watch [TS]

00:39:21   those who like this thing looks so cool [TS]

00:39:23   and then get it rarely measures up so [TS]

00:39:25   can I see my style I supplies my kids do [TS]

00:39:27   that now and the worst part is my kids [TS]

00:39:29   don't have the immunity we all had the [TS]

00:39:31   immunity of like watching lots of [TS]

00:39:32   commercials and knowing well it's a [TS]

00:39:33   commercial but it looks cool my kids we [TS]

00:39:36   have you know tivo is my kids have no [TS]

00:39:38   commercial immunity at all so that they [TS]

00:39:41   will they will see a commercial and be [TS]

00:39:42   like I must have that right now it is [TS]

00:39:45   the greatest thing ever it's like no no [TS]

00:39:46   commercial commercial made it's kinda [TS]

00:39:48   scary though right guy like AC at though [TS]

00:39:50   well sporting events or occasionally [TS]

00:39:54   there's a lady or occasionally there's a [TS]

00:39:55   kids show and they don't date they get [TS]

00:39:57   bored and they don't or they're not [TS]

00:39:58   paying attention they don't fast forward [TS]

00:40:00   and in fact that's they [TS]

00:40:02   today when we're not around and they're [TS]

00:40:03   watching a kids show in the other room [TS]

00:40:05   because we're better sr they don't ask [TS]

00:40:07   for because the four sweet forbidden [TS]

00:40:09   fruit of the commercial that's kind of [TS]

00:40:12   scary though because it's one of those [TS]

00:40:13   things that point out just how effective [TS]

00:40:14   they are right like mine I like like [TS]

00:40:16   there should be warning labels it's like [TS]

00:40:18   mind control [TS]

00:40:19   it's amazing although my son that [TS]

00:40:20   happened once with my son where where I [TS]

00:40:22   was watching back the the ipad [TS]

00:40:24   introduction for work I was just because [TS]

00:40:27   I was there and I I you know when you're [TS]

00:40:29   covering it is dns you know especially [TS]

00:40:31   it's kind of a blur and then you go back [TS]

00:40:33   later maybe in low-level I've been to [TS]

00:40:36   Steve Jobs events yeah occasionally our [TS]

00:40:38   alright well that's true it's a blur [TS]

00:40:41   this is your proof mother is my [TS]

00:40:42   transformer anything anyway my my my son [TS]

00:40:45   it [TS]

00:40:45   I didn't realize was watching from [TS]

00:40:47   behind the couch and after i was done he [TS]

00:40:49   said daddy I have to have an ipad right [TS]

00:40:51   now I'm so I don't know he's in the [TS]

00:40:53   reality reality distortion field know [TS]

00:40:55   and but it turns out it's just a [TS]

00:40:57   commercial field he doesn't have any [TS]

00:40:59   isn't immunity everything that you're [TS]

00:41:02   trying to they're trying to sell the me [TS]

00:41:03   right like they're trying to make me [TS]

00:41:05   explain commercial six children when [TS]

00:41:07   they first saw them I said he was [TS]

00:41:10   watching a show and daddy what's this [TS]

00:41:11   because he'd never seen that car before [TS]

00:41:12   and I said I said the the commercials [TS]

00:41:15   that was the commercial says it's the [TS]

00:41:16   things they put on TV to make you buy [TS]

00:41:18   stuff and now he now he is first [TS]

00:41:20   impression of those that someone trying [TS]

00:41:21   to make him do something so that's how [TS]

00:41:23   he understands marshals and I don't [TS]

00:41:25   battle against the idea of someone [TS]

00:41:27   making him do anything that sounds like [TS]

00:41:28   how we would make him do something still [TS]

00:41:30   can't get pulled into the field but I [TS]

00:41:32   also taught them had a 30-second skip [TS]

00:41:33   very early on so he really does skip the [TS]

00:41:35   stuff on his own like that you have your [TS]

00:41:36   priorities in line i described [TS]

00:41:39   commercials to my children as they're [TS]

00:41:40   lying to you that takes it one step [TS]

00:41:44   further [TS]

00:41:44   ya welcome and you need to do that right [TS]

00:41:46   because there's that that expectation [TS]

00:41:48   gap where you seen on TV and it looks [TS]

00:41:49   really cool and then when you get it [TS]

00:41:51   you're like wow this is really growing [TS]

00:41:53   up though isn't it like you have to [TS]

00:41:54   learn that yourself and I make things [TS]

00:41:56   like mail-order freshwater humiliating [TS]

00:41:58   disappoint many ways own eight weeks for [TS]

00:42:00   deriving the mail and I were commonly [TS]

00:42:02   asked piece of crap that you saved your [TS]

00:42:04   allowance oh my god stop talking i said [TS]

00:42:07   in the world roxrite yeah i totally for [TS]

00:42:09   the battle [TS]

00:42:10   star Galactica play kit in whatever the [TS]

00:42:12   1979 presumably and it took it was like [TS]

00:42:15   a lot of six to eight weeks for delivery [TS]

00:42:16   well first off that was a lie [TS]

00:42:18   it took like a 14 weeks for delivery and [TS]

00:42:21   when I got it was like pieces of [TS]

00:42:23   cardboard that you could fold into the [TS]

00:42:25   shape of a Viper pilots dashboard or [TS]

00:42:29   something [TS]

00:42:30   it was so disappointing and I i sent my [TS]

00:42:33   valuable box tops in for that people [TS]

00:42:35   saying shrimp are not actually mermen [TS]

00:42:37   what i will say that they be the [TS]

00:42:41   exception I roll my experience was used [TS]

00:42:43   to love when I was a kid we had all of [TS]

00:42:46   the like whenever you bought a set of [TS]

00:42:47   legos they would come with like the [TS]

00:42:50   catalog for all the lego sets and this [TS]

00:42:53   is back when the girls were still good [TS]

00:42:54   and wait and wait for legos not good [TS]

00:42:58   news [TS]

00:42:58   they're good to spend ok they're ok [TS]

00:43:01   they're not they're not what they used [TS]

00:43:02   to be [TS]

00:43:03   can you only buys the whole we have a [TS]

00:43:05   whole podcast about like all right okay [TS]

00:43:07   anyway so like I remember what I would [TS]

00:43:09   walk to school with my friends again the [TS]

00:43:11   elementary school and have all the [TS]

00:43:13   catalogs and they would divvy up and [TS]

00:43:14   someone will be like the space catalog [TS]

00:43:15   or like the town cataloguing the castle [TS]

00:43:17   catalog and what we would like flip [TS]

00:43:19   through those things and like pick out [TS]

00:43:20   all the awesome sets that we wanted and [TS]

00:43:22   I were that's that was the same sort of [TS]

00:43:23   thing like you had to like fill out like [TS]

00:43:25   an order form and make sure that you [TS]

00:43:27   were like I would like fill out the [TS]

00:43:29   order forms for my parents and be like [TS]

00:43:31   because United trust them right to get [TS]

00:43:33   the right sets and everything so I would [TS]

00:43:35   fill them all out and then they would [TS]

00:43:36   take like like six to eight weeks to [TS]

00:43:38   show up and it would just be like every [TS]

00:43:40   day coming home and lights and waiting [TS]

00:43:43   by the door for kids torture you and you [TS]

00:43:47   don't really realize mine is torture if [TS]

00:43:50   I can't wait the amazon prime [TS]

00:43:52   deliberately have two days have been [TS]

00:43:53   talking two days and they can't believe [TS]

00:43:56   that you're offering at the mouth by the [TS]

00:43:57   time the fedex guy showed up [TS]

00:43:58   dan didn't you want the princess castle [TS]

00:44:00   know what one of them [TS]

00:44:02   hello curse you I would be so sad you [TS]

00:44:06   can't trust your parents my parents my [TS]

00:44:07   parents were like hey you like it's the [TS]

00:44:09   80s you like music here's a Thompson [TS]

00:44:11   Twins cassette like you can't just go to [TS]

00:44:14   go to the drugstore and buy a tape and [TS]

00:44:18   so yeah it's music from the eighties [TS]

00:44:19   were in the eighties now he's a kid [TS]

00:44:21   enjoy doesn't know dr. dog was it only [TS]

00:44:25   in the nineties where they would do like [TS]

00:44:27   if you signed up for a book fair at [TS]

00:44:29   school you could potentially get these [TS]

00:44:31   weird like special edition packets of [TS]

00:44:33   whatever seems things like I remember [TS]

00:44:35   using too easy to get like sign up for [TS]

00:44:37   the Star Wars special edition packet [TS]

00:44:40   where you get like a membership packet [TS]

00:44:42   every month if you paid 1295 and their [TS]

00:44:45   be maybe like a cute little cardboard [TS]

00:44:47   taught toy but also like special [TS]

00:44:49   exclusive content from George Lucas are [TS]

00:44:51   from like one of them was that only like [TS]

00:44:53   a nineties thing that we spent the past [TS]

00:44:56   ten years trying to not get special card [TS]

00:44:58   4gb exactly the opposite you get to take [TS]

00:45:01   I find up and shove it back into George [TS]

00:45:03   Lucas there's a podcast wow i'm still [TS]

00:45:10   waiting for that movie by the way the [TS]

00:45:11   people versus George Lucas I don't know [TS]

00:45:12   if it's out yet but I'm I'm ready for [TS]

00:45:14   that one [TS]

00:45:14   there's a whole something on your [TS]

00:45:15   Christmas letters and yes they're too [TS]

00:45:17   man [TS]

00:45:19   we we we are gonna you know I have to [TS]

00:45:21   break it to the listeners of the [TS]

00:45:22   incomparable bad news we have lots of [TS]

00:45:24   ideas for topics we may be here for a [TS]

00:45:26   while so if you're waiting for us to [TS]

00:45:28   give up your dumb sorry we might not be [TS]

00:45:31   able to give up because we gotta cover [TS]

00:45:33   you know all the star wars' I just was [TS]

00:45:35   thinking when was talking about that I [TS]

00:45:37   was remembering Star Wars cards and then [TS]

00:45:39   it's like baseball cards and was like [TS]

00:45:41   that we had blue cards and then there [TS]

00:45:42   were the yellow cards in the red cards [TS]

00:45:44   and you open a package like oh these are [TS]

00:45:45   the greencards their crappy the moment I [TS]

00:45:48   call it a whole bunch of those later on [TS]

00:45:49   in like I remember what year when the [TS]

00:45:52   early nineties maybe that they must be [TS]

00:45:54   after that because they had these like [TS]

00:45:55   widescreen cards that tops came out with [TS]

00:45:57   that were all like scenes from the star [TS]

00:45:59   wars movie yeah that's it that was much [TS]

00:46:00   that was much later [TS]

00:46:02   hey I had a ton of us greg did you and I [TS]

00:46:04   were of the generation while you make [TS]

00:46:06   might have been a little tool for that [TS]

00:46:07   when when there's like the boba fett or [TS]

00:46:09   you're sorry [TS]

00:46:10   well I know maybe you were the right [TS]

00:46:12   generation when they're like promise to [TS]

00:46:13   boba fett but they didn't fire away [TS]

00:46:15   back or know what was it wasn't no star [TS]

00:46:17   wars action figures in 77 where the with [TS]

00:46:19   a wood saw an empty promise all the [TS]

00:46:21   action figures and you all you got was a [TS]

00:46:22   box with nothing in it and the promise [TS]

00:46:24   of action figures because they can't [TS]

00:46:25   read manufacture them in time for the [TS]

00:46:27   popularity of the movie so you go to the [TS]

00:46:28   store and what you buy with your money [TS]

00:46:30   was this empty cardboard box with little [TS]

00:46:32   pictures of the things that you might [TS]

00:46:33   get eventually I never bought action [TS]

00:46:36   figures but i do remember that friends [TS]

00:46:38   had like a Luke who had a lightsaber [TS]

00:46:40   stuck-up is only a little [TS]

00:46:42   yeah they were all nighter yeah that's [TS]

00:46:44   the anything about my parents also know [TS]

00:46:46   not what they didn't allow video games [TS]

00:46:48   they also my mother specifically did not [TS]

00:46:49   allow weapons [TS]

00:46:50   John and I have to call my dentist our [TS]

00:46:52   wires they took away all the guns I [TS]

00:46:54   think I money like that everywhere he [TS]

00:46:56   goes no I'm not Amish I'd just my mother [TS]

00:46:58   was a hippie but they couldn't take away [TS]

00:47:00   lightsabers because they're all inserted [TS]

00:47:01   into the arms a little bit well you can [TS]

00:47:03   pull it matters ever made like some yea [TS]

00:47:06   though they didn't read that but you [TS]

00:47:07   could like pull up the plastic insert [TS]

00:47:09   but the writing and lifesavers whatever [TS]

00:47:11   those little black but then later on [TS]

00:47:12   everyone [TS]

00:47:14   I don't like later on I had a Return of [TS]

00:47:16   the Jedi Luke that actually had like a [TS]

00:47:18   detachable white sangria that we're [TS]

00:47:20   gonna involve in figures and they got [TS]

00:47:22   over the years to 12-inch figures the [TS]

00:47:24   Barbie figures with the all the extra [TS]

00:47:27   accessories I modern tell you that I [TS]

00:47:29   loved that had like a removable helmet [TS]

00:47:31   when they were awesome [TS]

00:47:32   they were on the same scale as the [TS]

00:47:33   Barbies I i had actually thanks for [TS]

00:47:35   mentioning that ran because I i got one [TS]

00:47:39   Christmas I got AI got a Barbie [TS]

00:47:40   Winnebago and you may be asking Jason I [TS]

00:47:43   didn't know you play with Barbies I [TS]

00:47:44   didn't but my Captain Kirk mr. Spock [TS]

00:47:47   dolls were on the exact same scale so [TS]

00:47:49   Captain Kirk mr. Spock would take [TS]

00:47:50   adventures in their shuttle and have it [TS]

00:47:53   was a Winnebago and I think I inherited [TS]

00:47:55   that a bad room and and you could you [TS]

00:47:58   could you lift up it had a retractable [TS]

00:48:00   kind of metal roof yeah and I had that I [TS]

00:48:03   had is inherited that from 10 minutes [TS]

00:48:05   that was great Captain Kirk mr. Spock [TS]

00:48:07   the adventures they had that Winnebago [TS]

00:48:08   who I had a 12 pitch radar we can cancel [TS]

00:48:13   the most flash fiction know what since [TS]

00:48:14   last fall and that's all I had it I had [TS]

00:48:17   a 12-inch GI joe that had actual stubble [TS]

00:48:20   on his head and a scar on his face was [TS]

00:48:23   before they made him pitch friendly he [TS]

00:48:24   wasn't anything I was originally a toast [TS]

00:48:26   Vietnam g [TS]

00:48:27   I Joe my we started out before they [TS]

00:48:29   track him down into a quote-unquote [TS]

00:48:30   action figure because boys don't play [TS]

00:48:32   with dolls PDF flyer max to every once [TS]

00:48:34   in awhile he would go in slaughter [TS]

00:48:35   Superman punch back action [TS]

00:48:37   wow you Superman Superman had a rubber a [TS]

00:48:40   bicep muscle you could wrap a little [TS]

00:48:43   piece of silver plastic around and so [TS]

00:48:44   when you flex his arm it would pop the [TS]

00:48:46   steel band off their search are clever [TS]

00:48:50   in those days I feel like instead of [TS]

00:48:51   just relying on like battery power and [TS]

00:48:52   light up the whole transformers are [TS]

00:48:54   pretty clever over 24 hours were pretty [TS]

00:48:56   cool [TS]

00:48:57   yeah july gotta get out this form right [TS]

00:48:59   now we're terrible as again there are [TS]

00:49:02   plastic right and there didn't we were [TS]

00:49:04   not like metal ones when I was in we [TS]

00:49:07   send we spent last year a long time [TS]

00:49:10   trying to find transformer that was the [TS]

00:49:12   basic you know it's a it's a guy who [TS]

00:49:15   folds up into a car and we couldn't even [TS]

00:49:17   find any of them because now they're all [TS]

00:49:18   like in little pieces are you sticking [TS]

00:49:20   together with your animals and crap or [TS]

00:49:22   Orchestra tuning on the old ones where [TS]

00:49:24   they were my son had one that he kinda [TS]

00:49:26   like but it was super simple you can [TS]

00:49:27   push it together it was a car and then [TS]

00:49:28   it would press a button and it popped up [TS]

00:49:30   and it was a robot top in a car which is [TS]

00:49:33   not fun [TS]

00:49:35   so it's really the Transformers even you [TS]

00:49:53   it out [TS]

00:49:54   seriously we'll just look at all your [TS]
