00:00:30   uncomfortable i'm your host Jason Steele [TS]

00:00:32   we're here to kick off the new series of [TS]

00:00:34   hopefully series it's the first one you [TS]

00:00:37   never know a series of episodes you know [TS]

00:00:39   we watched miyazaki movies and we [TS]

00:00:41   launched pixar movies and other things [TS]

00:00:43   that we do Star Wars movie starts to [TS]

00:00:44   talk about Star Trek so back many years [TS]

00:00:49   ago in the early days the uncomfortable [TS]

00:00:51   we did an episode about the entire [TS]

00:00:52   output of joss whedon in in an hour [TS]

00:00:55   efficient back when you could do it in [TS]

00:00:58   an hour and that well that was no not [TS]

00:01:00   even then and down and we thought that [TS]

00:01:03   you know I i guess that the incomparable [TS]

00:01:04   would only air for about ten episodes [TS]

00:01:06   and then we would be done we were [TS]

00:01:07   covered everything we can move away and [TS]

00:01:10   instead we as we near episode 300 [TS]

00:01:12   divided perhaps my favorite TV show of [TS]

00:01:16   all time deserve more than 10 minutes [TS]

00:01:18   tucked inside a podcast about all of the [TS]

00:01:22   work of a particular particular person [TS]

00:01:25   so we're going to talk about buffy the [TS]

00:01:28   vampire slayer my favorite TV show of [TS]

00:01:30   all time and we're going to start by [TS]

00:01:33   talking about just one season [TS]

00:01:35   that's right it's a seasonal look at [TS]

00:01:38   buffy the vampire slayer we're going to [TS]

00:01:40   talk about season one often maligned is [TS]

00:01:44   it is it rightfully maligned is it [TS]

00:01:46   justly mind we'll find out with my three [TS]

00:01:49   fine compatriots alene sims hello [TS]

00:01:52   welcome to the Hellmouth oh I'm so happy [TS]

00:01:55   to be here i think david lure who died i [TS]

00:01:59   am I am so glad we're going to take a [TS]

00:02:01   stab at this [TS]

00:02:02   mmm damn and I Monty Ashley can you go [TS]

00:02:06   hack into the city computer for me [TS]

00:02:09   quickly come back Jason alright with [TS]

00:02:12   everything he's the willow of our group [TS]

00:02:14   i guess so [TS]

00:02:16   oh my that means I've got a sexy [TS]

00:02:18   doppelganger in a few years in a few [TS]

00:02:20   years a spoilers for all shows that [TS]

00:02:23   we're done [TS]

00:02:23   15-20 years ago so Buffy Season one [TS]

00:02:27   funny so funny thing i'll give an [TS]

00:02:30   opening statement of my own here how [TS]

00:02:32   about that but this this is a show that [TS]

00:02:34   I think the WB took a flyer on in 1997 [TS]

00:02:37   or probably they took the flyer in 1996 [TS]

00:02:39   it aired starting in march 1997 they [TS]

00:02:42   give it a 12-episode [TS]

00:02:43   order the entire show was produced [TS]

00:02:45   before it even aired the first episode [TS]

00:02:47   it's actually one of these rare shows [TS]

00:02:51   that has a opening sequence theme music [TS]

00:02:54   with a a wide range of clips from [TS]

00:02:57   throughout its first seats and because [TS]

00:02:59   they had those and in fact I believe [TS]

00:03:02   they even shot stuff for early episodes [TS]

00:03:05   late in the run of the season when they [TS]

00:03:06   knew things we're gonna do you know [TS]

00:03:08   where the story was going a little bit [TS]

00:03:09   more clearly because they had that [TS]

00:03:11   luxury because they didn't have to [TS]

00:03:13   deliver their episodes until essentially [TS]

00:03:15   they were done on the WB in this era for [TS]

00:03:19   those who don't remember was a place [TS]

00:03:21   that that showed terrible things like a [TS]

00:03:24   sitcom starring Pauly Shore and was not [TS]

00:03:27   a place for anything that anyone would [TS]

00:03:28   probably want to watch so my point is I [TS]

00:03:32   it was an unexpected thing that that it [TS]

00:03:35   that this show would it would make it i [TS]

00:03:37   think i'm not sure anybody really [TS]

00:03:39   expected that it would be successful at [TS]

00:03:40   all they did their 12 episodes it has an [TS]

00:03:43   ending [TS]

00:03:44   I remember watching the premiere of this [TS]

00:03:46   show and my wife was taken classes and I [TS]

00:03:49   had to go pick her up at the at the [TS]

00:03:51   train station afterward and I was so I [TS]

00:03:54   was I was killing time essentially as [TS]

00:03:56   you do when you're when you're in your [TS]

00:03:57   twenties and I I i started watching this [TS]

00:04:00   my picture up the transitions you know i [TS]

00:04:02   watch tonight i watch buffy the vampire [TS]

00:04:03   slayer' and it was actually kind of good [TS]

00:04:06   it was a surprise and and when I hear [TS]

00:04:10   people talk about it now a lot of times [TS]

00:04:11   i hear people say oh you should just [TS]

00:04:12   skip the first season of Buffy it's not [TS]

00:04:14   any good and i have a problem that [TS]

00:04:16   because i think that that is an unfair [TS]

00:04:18   treatment of the first season of buffy [TS]

00:04:20   it was it's it's a funny little season [TS]

00:04:23   12 episodes they didn't expect it to go [TS]

00:04:25   anywhere made on the shoes shoe string [TS]

00:04:28   but I feel like the roots of the strong [TS]

00:04:32   show that it was to become were already [TS]

00:04:33   but not present when they made these [TS]

00:04:36   they're visible here and by the time the [TS]

00:04:38   first season came to an end i was [TS]

00:04:40   absolutely in love with the show already [TS]

00:04:41   so that's my opening statement [TS]

00:04:43   can I make a quick opening day yes that [TS]

00:04:45   was what i was going Monty good timing [TS]

00:04:47   out great i also remember when I watched [TS]

00:04:51   the first episode of [TS]

00:04:52   buffy the vampire slayer it was not when [TS]

00:04:55   it aired I didn't start watching the [TS]

00:04:58   show until part way through season 6 and [TS]

00:05:01   i know this because i watched and FX [TS]

00:05:05   marathon where they started showing two [TS]

00:05:08   episodes per day on january 1 2002 I [TS]

00:05:12   said this is when I'm jumping into the [TS]

00:05:14   show that people he talking about [TS]

00:05:16   and I kept copious notes and kind of [TS]

00:05:19   live blog by experience so i was able to [TS]

00:05:22   as weary watched episodes for this [TS]

00:05:25   compare my notes for what i thought the [TS]

00:05:28   first time I saw every single thing on [TS]

00:05:30   the show 14 years ago and i will say i [TS]

00:05:34   don't think eps I don't think season one [TS]

00:05:36   is that bad [TS]

00:05:37   it even contains what might be my [TS]

00:05:39   favorite scene in the entire series [TS]

00:05:40   intriguing David do you have any opening [TS]

00:05:43   statement to make about your you how you [TS]

00:05:46   discovered this show [TS]

00:05:47   well I also came to it late not quite [TS]

00:05:49   that late i came to about midway through [TS]

00:05:52   the second season because my first [TS]

00:05:57   impulse was oh I saw the movie the movie [TS]

00:05:59   was fun but yeah and so I just didn't [TS]

00:06:04   watch it and the WB you know that was [TS]

00:06:07   good shows don't happen on the WB polish [TS]

00:06:10   or in polisher sitcom yeah you know and [TS]

00:06:13   this was filling in for the primetime [TS]

00:06:14   soap savannah and you knows i was kind [TS]

00:06:18   of sad because i couldn't have [TS]

00:06:19   commercials for Savannah to make fun of [TS]

00:06:21   for 12 weeks so you know I was like hey [TS]

00:06:24   and somewhere in the second season an [TS]

00:06:27   old friend of mine I've had a lot of [TS]

00:06:30   people tell me oh you need to read or [TS]

00:06:33   watch or go see blank because it's just [TS]

00:06:37   like the way you write its you would [TS]

00:06:39   love this and I've been burned so many [TS]

00:06:42   times but I do this one friend who I [TS]

00:06:45   trust implicitly on that she always she [TS]

00:06:49   knows exactly that wavelength and she's [TS]

00:06:52   like no you have to watch this trust me [TS]

00:06:53   and I sent them and watched it and went [TS]

00:06:56   out and got the they were they were [TS]

00:06:59   still like on VHS oh yea seeing the VHS [TS]

00:07:02   is you can have three pack set with you [TS]

00:07:05   basically the whole first season on I [TS]

00:07:07   went out and bought that and watch the [TS]

00:07:09   whole first season on VHS in between the [TS]

00:07:12   first two episodes i saw of season two [TS]

00:07:13   and it was like yeah okay and then i was [TS]

00:07:17   i was in for the long run lean what [TS]

00:07:19   about you what's your what's your [TS]

00:07:20   history with the show you know I am [TS]

00:07:21   trying to remember actually because so [TS]

00:07:24   it it aired in 97 and we didn't get the [TS]

00:07:29   WB so I didn't actually start watching [TS]

00:07:32   it and tell like the early two thousands [TS]

00:07:35   I couldn't even tell you what season and [TS]

00:07:37   it was only like really briefly and [TS]

00:07:40   because then I went away to college and [TS]

00:07:41   didn't have a TV so i actually haven't [TS]

00:07:44   seen the last couple of seasons of buffy [TS]

00:07:46   and my husband and I started a watch / [TS]

00:07:50   rewatch and a few months ago and I don't [TS]

00:07:55   know what's coming like I think one of [TS]

00:07:56   the latest episodes i've seen as and is [TS]

00:07:59   the musical well just a moment and so [TS]

00:08:03   you know once more with feeling and so [TS]

00:08:06   so my history with buffy is actually [TS]

00:08:09   like I guess more recent dish because I [TS]

00:08:11   i saw it piecemeal I never saw anything [TS]

00:08:13   in order i just kinda side as reruns [TS]

00:08:16   came on TV and I do own the first season [TS]

00:08:19   on DVD because my intention before [TS]

00:08:22   netflix one has to to buy them and watch [TS]

00:08:26   them all and I remember thinking that [TS]

00:08:28   the first season was weak and what I'm [TS]

00:08:30   going to say I've been watching it i [TS]

00:08:32   binge-watched probably talk about this a [TS]

00:08:35   little bit i haven't watched nine of the [TS]

00:08:37   12 episodes of the first season [TS]

00:08:40   I'm over the last couple of days and I [TS]

00:08:43   it's pretty good i I don't know what I [TS]

00:08:46   was thinking when I was like it's it's [TS]

00:08:47   not that great so and I like it I like [TS]

00:08:49   there's some pretty quick [TS]

00:08:51   character development that i think is [TS]

00:08:53   awesome and so I think you know for a [TS]

00:08:57   first season especially it's one of the [TS]

00:08:59   stronger first seasons I've seen even [TS]

00:09:01   like with modern TV competing against it [TS]

00:09:04   so you know watch it people it's good [TS]

00:09:08   it's cheap I mean that that's the thing [TS]

00:09:09   that struck me about it i mean it's so [TS]

00:09:11   cheap that when this is actually it was [TS]

00:09:13   airing when I went to the Babylon 5 set [TS]

00:09:17   and one of the producers on babble [TS]

00:09:18   15 said we were talking about Buffy [TS]

00:09:22   briefly because although some of the [TS]

00:09:23   monsters they show them the the big bug [TS]

00:09:26   monster in the teacher's pet episode of [TS]

00:09:28   season one looks like it was possibly [TS]

00:09:30   reused from Babylon 5 and the guy said [TS]

00:09:34   yeah I don't know what they're doing [TS]

00:09:35   over there it should probably look [TS]

00:09:37   better given given you know that they [TS]

00:09:39   should be able to make it look better [TS]

00:09:41   than it does I mean you do get the sense [TS]

00:09:42   like the budget was low and they didn't [TS]

00:09:45   necessarily really know what they were [TS]

00:09:46   doing there wasn't a sci-fi industry to [TS]

00:09:49   the head to the level that there is now [TS]

00:09:51   a genre TV there was a lot less of it [TS]

00:09:52   back then [TS]

00:09:53   believe it or not but uh so we get there [TS]

00:09:57   are moments where I think it looks cheap [TS]

00:09:58   but it's got its got characters it's got [TS]

00:10:03   dialogue it's got it really commits to [TS]

00:10:06   the the the your your demons that [TS]

00:10:10   tormented you in high school [TS]

00:10:12   what if those were actually demons [TS]

00:10:14   premise of the show and gives you the [TS]

00:10:17   standalone episodes that are very much [TS]

00:10:19   like you know drilling down into uh a [TS]

00:10:23   particular aspect of high school as a [TS]

00:10:25   horror show and making those you know [TS]

00:10:28   making those things real and exploring [TS]

00:10:31   them that way it's got its got a great [TS]

00:10:33   ensemble that's their from from the [TS]

00:10:36   start [TS]

00:10:37   it's got some interesting tasks [TS]

00:10:38   structures especially since Cordelia's [TS]

00:10:41   in the opening credits and she's like [TS]

00:10:43   yeah I a villain for almost the entire [TS]

00:10:46   season that's really interesting and [TS]

00:10:50   then I think one of the things about the [TS]

00:10:52   show that struck me at the time that now [TS]

00:10:54   seems normal but I think that's because [TS]

00:10:55   that's how influential this was is the [TS]

00:10:58   way that this season is structured is [TS]

00:11:00   they have the big bad witch [TS]

00:11:02   I'd never heard and i think is a term [TS]

00:11:04   that was coined by Joss Whedon in Buffy [TS]

00:11:08   the idea that you have an overarching [TS]

00:11:10   villain who carries through the season [TS]

00:11:12   but not every episode is about them but [TS]

00:11:14   some are and some are surprisingly so [TS]

00:11:17   and then at the end Buffy resolves its [TS]

00:11:20   storyline and then you move on to the [TS]

00:11:22   next season and that was not something [TS]

00:11:24   that I that a lot of shows were doing at [TS]

00:11:26   this point because a lot of shows were [TS]

00:11:28   doing cliff hangers and things like that [TS]

00:11:30   and instead with Buffy [TS]

00:11:32   you know the master dies at the end of [TS]

00:11:34   episode 12 that's how that works and [TS]

00:11:35   he's been the big bad for the whole [TS]

00:11:37   season from the very first episode you [TS]

00:11:39   know you didn't have exactly those [TS]

00:11:41   self-contained seasons where you had an [TS]

00:11:43   overarching storyline that didn't [TS]

00:11:45   necessarily show up all the time but [TS]

00:11:47   they're be threads you know and and then [TS]

00:11:51   one thing that's really interesting if [TS]

00:11:52   if you're paying attention she only [TS]

00:11:54   meets the master face-to-face in the [TS]

00:11:57   final episode right so it's not like you [TS]

00:12:00   know hope we're going to fight the [TS]

00:12:01   master every week and then we're gonna [TS]

00:12:03   like beat him but not all the way but [TS]

00:12:05   like the flash does with zoom your [TS]

00:12:07   rising up all right right and and you [TS]

00:12:10   know and so looking back from here you [TS]

00:12:13   know you wouldn't have all the Berlin t [TS]

00:12:15   verse DC shows structured the same way I [TS]

00:12:18   mean that they are all of them are [TS]

00:12:20   playing off of the buffy playbook I [TS]

00:12:22   think there's so much here that is fully [TS]

00:12:24   formed [TS]

00:12:25   maybe it helps that there was that [TS]

00:12:27   screenplay for the movie and so he had [TS]

00:12:30   time to think about it and what he had [TS]

00:12:31   time to think about what he didn't like [TS]

00:12:32   about what they did when they filmed it [TS]

00:12:34   and I and they also shot a pilot we [TS]

00:12:38   should say there is a weird unaired [TS]

00:12:40   pilot that you can find on youtube with [TS]

00:12:43   the wrong i like that it is we're did [TS]

00:12:46   disquieting it's not as you know it's no [TS]

00:12:49   good no because I think Alyson Hannigan [TS]

00:12:52   is the character who best has her [TS]

00:12:55   character down from her first line [TS]

00:12:58   mhm and seeing that take it out of the [TS]

00:13:02   pilot that I don't care for it [TS]

00:13:04   I explain to my children today at dinner [TS]

00:13:06   that this is that the guy who made the [TS]

00:13:09   Avengers movies was actually the guy who [TS]

00:13:11   made my favorite TV show and in Julian's [TS]

00:13:14   like joss whedon what did he do some [TS]

00:13:16   heated Buffy was like I had no idea like [TS]

00:13:19   yeah what's kid we have that we gotta [TS]

00:13:21   educate you should I i want to add [TS]

00:13:23   taught ask about the episodes but i [TS]

00:13:25   think i actually want to start with the [TS]

00:13:26   characters because i think i think that [TS]

00:13:28   that the characters the dialogue are so [TS]

00:13:31   strong in this and I was thinking about [TS]

00:13:32   Buffy I was saying about Star Trek and [TS]

00:13:35   how people talk about like the truck the [TS]

00:13:37   the the triangle the triumvirate of Kirk [TS]

00:13:39   Spock and McCoy and how this is really [TS]

00:13:41   interesting dynamic that really drives a [TS]

00:13:43   lot of the character interact [TS]

00:13:44   and-and-and make Star Trek the original [TS]

00:13:46   series work the way it does is because [TS]

00:13:48   of that I think about the structure of [TS]

00:13:50   buffy and I the way the characters [TS]

00:13:53   interact with each other I think it's [TS]

00:13:54   kind of brilliant you've got you've got [TS]

00:13:56   you've got Buffy who is the the core of [TS]

00:13:59   the show she's your captain kirk [TS]

00:14:00   essentially she's your lead she's the [TS]

00:14:02   person with the power [TS]

00:14:03   she's the the you know him every [TS]

00:14:05   generation a slayer is called yada yada [TS]

00:14:07   so and she's got Xander and Willow who [TS]

00:14:10   are her peers and they are also as as a [TS]

00:14:12   willow refers to a one-point there the [TS]

00:14:15   Slayer etsy there the backup singers 444 [TS]

00:14:19   them but you've also got Giles who is [TS]

00:14:21   anthony Stewart head great love Giles he [TS]

00:14:25   is you know my god how many scenes to [TS]

00:14:28   see polishes glasses right he is he's [TS]

00:14:31   mr. English librarian guy right but he [TS]

00:14:35   provides that gravitas that's actually a [TS]

00:14:38   lot of what i like about like Tom Cavan [TS]

00:14:40   on jesse martin in the flash it's that [TS]

00:14:41   same kind of feeling where he provides [TS]

00:14:44   that adult perspective on the on the [TS]

00:14:46   struggles of the young people which is [TS]

00:14:47   kinda cool well well in and he sells it [TS]

00:14:50   because he's in the middle taking them [TS]

00:14:52   all seriously and taking all these [TS]

00:14:54   fantastic things seriously general [TS]

00:14:56   provides the valuable service of [TS]

00:14:57   somebody who doesn't talk like a week in [TS]

00:14:59   character all the time that you've got [TS]

00:15:02   the quickness and the what's the sitch [TS]

00:15:04   and all this going on and then somebody [TS]

00:15:07   else comes in it doesn't talk like that [TS]

00:15:09   for once in awhile he does and that's [TS]

00:15:11   awesome because he's a grown-up [TS]

00:15:12   yeah so you've got him as an advisor [TS]

00:15:14   you've got angel as this mysterious [TS]

00:15:15   romantic figure who's on the side and [TS]

00:15:18   and not in the opening credits of the [TS]

00:15:20   first season which is kind of [TS]

00:15:21   interesting but he is present throughout [TS]

00:15:24   the season and then and and you have you [TS]

00:15:27   have Cordelia as i mentioned earlier who [TS]

00:15:29   is terrible grade she like the best [TS]

00:15:32   she's the best but she's just awful to [TS]

00:15:34   them she's an awful person but she's in [TS]

00:15:36   the credits and you all the whole season [TS]

00:15:38   you're like why is she in the credits [TS]

00:15:40   and then the last two episodes the world [TS]

00:15:41   kind of opens up for her and its really [TS]

00:15:44   interesting right so I'll I i look at [TS]

00:15:46   this this ensemble and I think this is a [TS]

00:15:48   really interesting collection of people [TS]

00:15:50   and the dynamic and and great casting [TS]

00:15:53   and all that so I that's my [TS]

00:15:54   you-know-what [TS]

00:15:55   what if you've got observations i can [TS]

00:15:57   walk through the characters if you want [TS]

00:15:58   but if you've got observations about [TS]

00:16:00   these characters please share because i [TS]

00:16:02   think i think the structure and the [TS]

00:16:04   individual characters are great i was [TS]

00:16:05   going to say with Cordelia its high [TS]

00:16:07   school so you have to have a mean girl [TS]

00:16:09   right yeah you have a mean girl who was [TS]

00:16:11   27 years old well yes well and also to [TS]

00:16:15   put stuff in opposition to Cordelia [TS]

00:16:16   because you get the sense throughout and [TS]

00:16:18   and if you see them seen buffy movie [TS]

00:16:19   it's absolutely clear that Cordelia is [TS]

00:16:22   what Buffy was and Buffy now because you [TS]

00:16:25   asked the Slayer and because she's been [TS]

00:16:27   outcast from LA and has to live in you [TS]

00:16:29   know terrible Sunnydale it's not la at [TS]

00:16:31   all [TS]

00:16:32   she is she is no longer popular like [TS]

00:16:35   Cordelia and she's gotta run around and [TS]

00:16:37   she she loves and Willow but the fact is [TS]

00:16:39   she is now her statuses cast her out and [TS]

00:16:43   so Cordelia represents everything that [TS]

00:16:45   buffy is lost from her life by being the [TS]

00:16:48   Slayer and then Cordelia get to do cool [TS]

00:16:49   things once towards the end of the first [TS]

00:16:51   season like roaring up in the car saying [TS]

00:16:53   getting if it's awesome because it's the [TS]

00:16:57   last thing you expect that point [TS]

00:16:59   Cordelia's character growth is something [TS]

00:17:00   I really like about the series that's [TS]

00:17:03   why I reacted with horror [TS]

00:17:05   I've heard people say they watched angel [TS]

00:17:07   but not Buffy I don't understand how you [TS]

00:17:09   can do that you don't understand and [TS]

00:17:12   that's that's like coming in at the [TS]

00:17:14   beginning of Act three in a character's [TS]

00:17:15   life [TS]

00:17:16   yeah I think she's excellent I she's one [TS]

00:17:20   of those people i really love to hate [TS]

00:17:23   because you get these glimpses of her [TS]

00:17:27   like especially at the the not prom [TS]

00:17:31   what is whatever that dances this is [TS]

00:17:34   larry flynt yeah whatever made with a [TS]

00:17:36   mainstream here [TS]

00:17:38   yeah and you know she's she's like [TS]

00:17:40   campaigning and such a rotten person and [TS]

00:17:44   then we get these Lake glimpses where [TS]

00:17:46   it's like oh she's super insecure like [TS]

00:17:48   she is extremely insecure and she's [TS]

00:17:52   hiding that behind like all of this BS [TS]

00:17:55   rate and and and it's just like glimpses [TS]

00:17:59   that are played so so well and we see [TS]

00:18:02   more and more of that as you know those [TS]

00:18:04   things go on and then kind of an angel [TS]

00:18:06   too [TS]

00:18:07   and i love i love the Xander willow [TS]

00:18:10   Buffy and dynamic especially as you know [TS]

00:18:15   in seasons two and three because and [TS]

00:18:19   they just they really work together well [TS]

00:18:21   it never felt to me like they were [TS]

00:18:23   trying to get their feet under them they [TS]

00:18:26   just seem to have a report kinda right [TS]

00:18:30   away and I think that's hard i think [TS]

00:18:33   it's extremely hard it's not something [TS]

00:18:35   that I see very often [TS]

00:18:36   willow I love ok so i love we have main [TS]

00:18:39   characters we have Cordelia we have [TS]

00:18:42   puffy we have willow we have Xander and [TS]

00:18:45   I guess you've got like basically three [TS]

00:18:48   men and three women don't forget jesse [TS]

00:18:49   jesse is there buddy Jesse's gonna be [TS]

00:18:51   with remember just dead for general [TS]

00:18:54   nobody believe that for one second jesse [TS]

00:18:56   is so boring I said in 2002 that Darla [TS]

00:19:01   has more character in the first syllable [TS]

00:19:03   of her introduction and Jesse does in [TS]

00:19:07   every second of screentime put together [TS]

00:19:09   i just like to imagine that jesse jesse [TS]

00:19:10   is the one who's the lifelong friend [TS]

00:19:13   Xander and Willow and then like he's [TS]

00:19:14   gone and you gonna do you ever talk [TS]

00:19:17   about Jesse again later when we don't [TS]

00:19:19   lament him at all it's just like okay [TS]

00:19:21   well but you're right you got you got [TS]

00:19:23   you got Buffy and Willow and Cordelia [TS]

00:19:24   you've also got jenny calendar who's [TS]

00:19:26   kicking around for a few episodes in [TS]

00:19:28   here too [TS]

00:19:28   she's honest she's stayed longer so i [TS]

00:19:31   wanted i wanted to say something we were [TS]

00:19:33   talking about this before we got started [TS]

00:19:34   thing that struck me about the dynamic [TS]

00:19:37   here that I totally have suppressed and [TS]

00:19:39   I think it's because it once it get to [TS]

00:19:42   get out of season 1 this is never an [TS]

00:19:43   issue again is I have forgotten how much [TS]

00:19:46   Sanders pining after Buffy throughout [TS]

00:19:49   and there's so many painful scenes of [TS]

00:19:51   him trying to ask her out and failing [TS]

00:19:53   and then he has a pity party for himself [TS]

00:19:55   at the end of the season where he [TS]

00:19:58   finally asked her out and she says I you [TS]

00:20:00   know I don't I just don't see you that I [TS]

00:20:02   don't see that way because how could I [TS]

00:20:04   your sander your zippo he blames angel [TS]

00:20:09   immediately which is so diluted right [TS]

00:20:11   but I'd and I think intentionally like [TS]

00:20:13   the the joss whedon knows that he's [TS]

00:20:16   deluded but it doesn't matter it's very [TS]

00:20:17   true to life [TS]

00:20:18   and-and-and so here's the thing is it's [TS]

00:20:20   painful and Xander Xander gets a lot [TS]

00:20:23   better later and the individual scenes [TS]

00:20:25   really bug me at the same time I [TS]

00:20:27   remember watching this at on first watch [TS]

00:20:30   and thinking well Buffy's kind of great [TS]

00:20:33   it sort of makes you know who if you're [TS]

00:20:36   Xander would you not have a crush on [TS]

00:20:38   Buffy and try to do something about it [TS]

00:20:40   but in hindsight it goes on so long yet [TS]

00:20:44   and thatthat's just I feel like and and [TS]

00:20:47   willow is no help because she's also [TS]

00:20:49   strangely unfortunately passive because [TS]

00:20:53   she's playing that she's she's in love [TS]

00:20:55   with Xander and it's unrequited and and [TS]

00:20:58   all of these things but she won't say [TS]

00:21:00   anything or do anything about it and she [TS]

00:21:02   you know in the the closer she comes is [TS]

00:21:05   in the episode where we're sander says [TS]

00:21:09   that she's one of the guys and later [TS]

00:21:11   Xander is told that he's one of the [TS]

00:21:13   girls and that's a nice turn about ten [TS]

00:21:16   she has greatly in that but you know [TS]

00:21:19   that whole dynamic that's what struck me [TS]

00:21:22   as being not as good as I remembered it [TS]

00:21:25   because it just goes on for ya and in [TS]

00:21:27   fact I am i rewatch I only watched nine [TS]

00:21:30   of the 12 as I said and two of the 12 a [TS]

00:21:33   did not watch or two of the three I did [TS]

00:21:35   not watch where at [TS]

00:21:37   featuring zamberlan pubescent boy yeah [TS]

00:21:40   I'm I I just they're not good episodes [TS]

00:21:43   and I was just like I you know if I want [TS]

00:21:46   to be exposed to this i can look at [TS]

00:21:49   twitter and she no see see you know men [TS]

00:21:54   or boys like being behaving badly hurt [TS]

00:21:58   here and and I just I don't wanna watch [TS]

00:22:01   that so I just skipped them and because [TS]

00:22:04   yeah he's he's excessive in gross and [TS]

00:22:11   also kind of puppy dog like it's like [TS]

00:22:13   this weird companies super needy [TS]

00:22:16   yeah yeah what I what I still love about [TS]

00:22:18   him is that a lot of the funny lines [TS]

00:22:20   that he is the joss whedon surrogate for [TS]

00:22:22   a lot of funny lines again so so needy [TS]

00:22:26   and over it's just too much [TS]

00:22:28   I think united side I think he may get [TS]

00:22:31   too many of the [TS]

00:22:32   any lines especially in the first [TS]

00:22:34   episode nicholas brendon kind of [TS]

00:22:37   struggles with his pure quipped density [TS]

00:22:39   I like sander better when he's a little [TS]

00:22:42   more [TS]

00:22:43   yeah yeah yeah and even even later [TS]

00:22:46   yeah I mean I i really liked him by the [TS]

00:22:49   end obviously but even even as far as [TS]

00:22:53   the episode the Zeppo you know as that [TS]

00:22:55   plot the first time I watched it you [TS]

00:22:57   know I'm kind of going oh it's a Xander [TS]

00:23:00   episode okay i love Xander but but but i [TS]

00:23:04   think that's the reason I love Xander [TS]

00:23:05   because I know his I know where he ends [TS]

00:23:08   up i know that in the the story arc for [TS]

00:23:10   him but uh but here yeah it's it's so so [TS]

00:23:14   much pining over Buffy where there's [TS]

00:23:16   clearly nothing there there's clearly [TS]

00:23:18   nothing there right [TS]

00:23:19   and yet he never did he he he there's a [TS]

00:23:22   lot of talk and there's a lot of sitcom [TS]

00:23:23   e attempts to talk to her that just made [TS]

00:23:27   me roam I like in the witch especially [TS]

00:23:29   there's a bunch but it really plays all [TS]

00:23:30   the way out to prophesy girl at the end [TS]

00:23:32   of the season and that didn't that i [TS]

00:23:34   didn't i didn't love that I didn't like [TS]

00:23:36   the pining play did like once he shut [TS]

00:23:40   down and as wide a little more the scene [TS]

00:23:42   where he puts his own feelings aside to [TS]

00:23:44   go to angel and say we have to do [TS]

00:23:46   something that could have been done [TS]

00:23:47   without as much run up though yeah his [TS]

00:23:50   story arc is that he hits bottom [TS]

00:23:52   essentially he pines overheard the whole [TS]

00:23:53   season and then he hit and then she [TS]

00:23:55   finally asked her out and she says no [TS]

00:23:57   and he pouts like a baby and then he [TS]

00:23:59   grew and then he grows up and says I [TS]

00:24:02   what what matters here is that the world [TS]

00:24:05   might end and Buffy not die i'm gonna go [TS]

00:24:07   to angel and swallow my pride and then [TS]

00:24:09   he gets to be the hero right because [TS]

00:24:10   she's dead facedown in the water [TS]

00:24:13   she's been killed by the master angel [TS]

00:24:14   can bring her back to life and he's the [TS]

00:24:17   one who brings her back to life and [TS]

00:24:18   that's his Redemption right that he's [TS]

00:24:20   finally kinda come could come around at [TS]

00:24:23   the end but it all happens in the course [TS]

00:24:24   of like 20 minutes [TS]

00:24:27   can I just say that angel says I can't [TS]

00:24:30   bring her back [TS]

00:24:31   I have no breath two seconds after [TS]

00:24:33   painting heavily because he ran out [TS]

00:24:36   there [TS]

00:24:36   that's because he's out of breath that's [TS]

00:24:38   what he meant and not a vampire thing [TS]

00:24:40   he's just really really tired [TS]

00:24:42   it's not human breath it clearly breathe [TS]

00:24:45   that's how he talked to campus for cpr [TS]

00:24:47   it's like the magic thing [TS]

00:24:48   Monty just you wouldn't understand [TS]

00:24:50   alright maybe he just said that to let [TS]

00:24:52   Xander do it make you feel bad [TS]

00:24:54   see is a good he is a good guy [TS]

00:24:58   I don't like this angel I hope somebody [TS]

00:25:00   stabs him so let's see who else who also [TS]

00:25:03   we talk about Giles i wanted to mention [TS]

00:25:04   again i did laugh but seriously he [TS]

00:25:07   cleans his glasses so often it is a it [TS]

00:25:10   is the it is such a great Tweedy like I [TS]

00:25:13   feel for it for a British Buffy fans I [TS]

00:25:17   mean this is yes this is what we think [TS]

00:25:19   you all are right this is the stereotype [TS]

00:25:22   oh my god but but it's a great [TS]

00:25:25   performance and I love his exasperation [TS]

00:25:27   there's a there's a nice moment and i [TS]

00:25:29   think the witch where should be declared [TS]

00:25:31   she's gonna go out for the cheerleading [TS]

00:25:32   squad and he says I forbid it [TS]

00:25:34   she says what are you gonna do and he's [TS]

00:25:36   like appeal to your own good judgment so [TS]

00:25:41   it's so great like he's there is the [TS]

00:25:43   advisor he she turns to him because she [TS]

00:25:45   needs to but he can order around me and [TS]

00:25:48   they built a really legitimately great [TS]

00:25:51   relationship [TS]

00:25:52   he is such a great adult a parental [TS]

00:25:56   figure but he also essentially doesn't [TS]

00:25:58   have a father but as a so he's not just [TS]

00:26:01   the gravitas right but he's such a UH a [TS]

00:26:05   true like friend and mentor to all of [TS]

00:26:09   them and i'm not sure that's a [TS]

00:26:10   relationship we see a lot on TV and and [TS]

00:26:13   and that's not so great about Giles now [TS]

00:26:15   and I mean you you and I are both [TS]

00:26:17   married to librarians and I don't know [TS]

00:26:20   true but mine and loves the fact that [TS]

00:26:22   here is a genre thing about a kick-ass [TS]

00:26:24   librarian who helped save the world over [TS]

00:26:26   and over again I'm not sure he's a very [TS]

00:26:28   good librarian I don't know you know I [TS]

00:26:30   didn't say that no one ever uses the [TS]

00:26:33   lights up front it's always a watcher [TS]

00:26:35   he's not actually a library is a [TS]

00:26:37   research librarian actually how about [TS]

00:26:38   that that's right the season one school [TS]

00:26:40   only has like two rooms and one hallway [TS]

00:26:42   and no one ever goes in the big room [TS]

00:26:44   it's true libraries are bad and was [TS]

00:26:46   gonna say he Giles is [TS]

00:26:49   the parents like Buffy's mass is kinda [TS]

00:26:53   awful she's totally scattered in this [TS]

00:26:55   again Joyce asshole gets better in [TS]

00:26:58   future seasons but here she's just [TS]

00:27:00   unpacking boxes and not listening to her [TS]

00:27:03   daughter and thanksgiving drive by a [TS]

00:27:05   drive-by parenting where she like give [TS]

00:27:07   restaurant talking to women she's gone [TS]

00:27:09   again and kind of telling her hey Buffy [TS]

00:27:12   you kind of suck like hey look at all [TS]

00:27:14   this awfully stuff you've done it's the [TS]

00:27:16   superhero thing to which adjust witness [TS]

00:27:18   said that this is essentially like [TS]

00:27:19   spider-man this is this is a that was [TS]

00:27:21   one of the models for for Buffy and the [TS]

00:27:24   problem if you're the superhero with a [TS]

00:27:25   secret identity and your parents don't [TS]

00:27:26   know then you get in trouble with your [TS]

00:27:28   parents so he can't have like the home [TS]

00:27:30   she can't have the home home parent but [TS]

00:27:32   she can have the work parent who knows [TS]

00:27:35   and that's child [TS]

00:27:36   yeah so Jael of jails i would like to [TS]

00:27:39   have a Giles in my life we all the other [TS]

00:27:41   Giles really i think you look at the [TS]

00:27:44   structure of of how the show is built [TS]

00:27:46   how the arcs are built how the [TS]

00:27:48   characters are designed the interactions [TS]

00:27:50   designed and it's no wonder the dress [TS]

00:27:52   had I mean clearly he read a lot of [TS]

00:27:54   comic books and it's no surprise that he [TS]

00:27:56   went into comic books actual comic books [TS]

00:27:58   and then you know graduated to directing [TS]

00:28:01   comic book movies because this is [TS]

00:28:03   ready-made for that kind of world angel [TS]

00:28:06   so angel appears from the very beginning [TS]

00:28:09   he's it's a mystery about what his uh [TS]

00:28:11   what is a story is but over time we [TS]

00:28:14   learned his history that Darla who we [TS]

00:28:17   see in the very first scene which is a [TS]

00:28:20   fantastic scene [TS]

00:28:21   Darla made him a vampire long ago and [TS]

00:28:26   when he was when he was a young Irish [TS]

00:28:27   boy with a very terrible Irish accent [TS]

00:28:30   sorry David for yeah that's good for you [TS]

00:28:32   and it's got a lot better as an actor [TS]

00:28:33   after 20 years by the way but angel [TS]

00:28:37   there it becomes a prominent character [TS]

00:28:39   on Buffy obviously ends up with his own [TS]

00:28:41   TV show that was also quite good [TS]

00:28:43   actually but i'm wondering what people [TS]

00:28:46   think of him here he's going to be [TS]

00:28:48   mysterious stranger for a very very long [TS]

00:28:50   time dream is everything ready here [TS]

00:28:54   you can see he's improved from being a [TS]

00:28:56   block of wood to a block of wood that [TS]

00:28:58   has facial expressions [TS]

00:29:00   yep to try to sell me on a TV series [TS]

00:29:04   starring angel and be like really but [TS]

00:29:06   they kinda pulled it off it was kind of [TS]

00:29:08   amazing but here here he's you know he's [TS]

00:29:10   he's mr. tall dark and handsome he turns [TS]

00:29:12   out he's a vampire so we get the whole [TS]

00:29:14   great star-crossed lovers thing I am not [TS]

00:29:16   convinced at all that he was meant to be [TS]

00:29:18   a vampire at the beginning i'm not [TS]

00:29:19   either its heat they didn't I think they [TS]

00:29:22   hadn't decided right it's there's no [TS]

00:29:24   like telltale hint we don't really get [TS]

00:29:26   any of that for a little while i don't [TS]

00:29:28   know i think you know what's what's the [TS]

00:29:30   one person a slayer shouldn't fall in [TS]

00:29:32   love with a vampire I think that was the [TS]

00:29:36   Romeo and Juliet hurt ya could be [TS]

00:29:38   because what else would he be could be [TS]

00:29:40   and a good the idea of a good vampire is [TS]

00:29:42   also interesting you're in this struggle [TS]

00:29:44   with with vampires and with the master [TS]

00:29:46   who is trying to escape [TS]

00:29:47   oh hey what do people think about the [TS]

00:29:49   master i was always sad that we didn't [TS]

00:29:50   get more flashbacks and master in future [TS]

00:29:52   seasons because he has a lot to do he [TS]

00:29:54   really is just down in this little cave [TS]

00:29:56   pushing it is little a special effect [TS]

00:29:58   bubble butt doesn't want to get out but [TS]

00:30:00   don't know he was a weird and creepy and [TS]

00:30:03   not i don't know I and I every time I [TS]

00:30:06   revisit season one like all the master i [TS]

00:30:08   think we seem like one more time and I [TS]

00:30:10   love his sense of humor I kept wondering [TS]

00:30:12   why why none of his acolytes didn't like [TS]

00:30:19   when nobody staked him like he's stuck [TS]

00:30:21   in this bubble he can't do anything he [TS]

00:30:24   needs them to feed him he needs a home [TS]

00:30:27   he is completely helpless and these [TS]

00:30:30   these like evil vampires are like like [TS]

00:30:33   hot dogs like yeah which is central [TS]

00:30:36   leader he said he's a little vampire [TS]

00:30:37   cult leader [TS]

00:30:38   oh I was gonna say it's assisted living [TS]

00:30:40   for elderly vampire all [TS]

00:30:42   no he's older than all of them maybe he [TS]

00:30:44   turned all of them i don't know [TS]

00:30:46   yeah I think yeah it's like 200 years [TS]

00:30:48   older than flat the impaler's supposedly [TS]

00:30:50   yeah he's like he's like he's like [TS]

00:30:52   Dracula only worse it's the master but [TS]

00:30:55   but he he only walks outside in the last [TS]

00:30:58   episode of the season when they finally [TS]

00:31:00   free him with prophecy finally frees him [TS]

00:31:03   from from but i enjoy i enjoy the master [TS]

00:31:05   is a big bad though because he's [TS]

00:31:07   learning the whole time he's scheming [TS]

00:31:09   the whole time but as David said earlier [TS]

00:31:11   we don't get that confrontation to the [TS]

00:31:13   end instead she since Luke after it her [TS]

00:31:15   and he says Darla after her he's got the [TS]

00:31:18   gets the anointed one he did hes doing [TS]

00:31:21   all the copies but they're a bunch of [TS]

00:31:22   episodes behind the scenes where he's [TS]

00:31:23   working on things but you know he's just [TS]

00:31:26   in the background making trouble until [TS]

00:31:28   the end when he finally escapes [TS]

00:31:31   [Music] [TS]

00:31:33   this week's episode the uncomfortable is [TS]

00:31:35   brought to you by Casper asleep brand [TS]

00:31:37   that has created one perfect mattress [TS]

00:31:39   sold directly to you at home fire the [TS]

00:31:44   internet it's an obsessively engineered [TS]

00:31:46   mattress and the price is shockingly [TS]

00:31:49   fair so let me drill down on a few of [TS]

00:31:52   these points of the mattress itself it's [TS]

00:31:54   got spring latex as well as support of [TS]

00:31:56   memory foams and you put them all [TS]

00:31:58   together and you create an award-winning [TS]

00:32:00   sleep surface with just the right sink [TS]

00:32:01   and just the right bounce time magazine [TS]

00:32:04   named one of the best inventions of 2015 [TS]

00:32:06   I've been sleeping well on one for a [TS]

00:32:08   year and a half now and i love it is [TS]

00:32:10   very good now the internet part might be [TS]

00:32:13   scared by a mattress on the internet but [TS]

00:32:14   if you think about how mattress shopping [TS]

00:32:16   happens in showrooms you're often laying [TS]

00:32:18   down on the mattress for a minute or two [TS]

00:32:19   minutes it gets really awkward it's [TS]

00:32:21   daytime people are all around you and [TS]

00:32:23   you're laying on a mattress trying to [TS]

00:32:24   imagine what it would be like to lay on [TS]

00:32:25   it for eight hours and you can't do that [TS]

00:32:27   with the internet mattress from Casper [TS]

00:32:30   guess what happens it comes to you in a [TS]

00:32:32   box you open it up it expands to fill [TS]

00:32:34   the space it becomes a full-size [TS]

00:32:35   mattress whatever size you choose they [TS]

00:32:38   will send it to you and it's the same [TS]

00:32:39   deal and then here's the thing you can [TS]

00:32:41   try it for up to a hundred night so [TS]

00:32:43   you'll know whether the this casper [TS]

00:32:46   mattresses right for you you have time [TS]

00:32:48   to try it out in real life in your own [TS]

00:32:50   house and decide and if you don't like [TS]

00:32:52   it [TS]

00:32:53   guess what they will pick it up and give [TS]

00:32:55   you a refund it's that simple and then [TS]

00:32:57   let's go to the fair price point [TS]

00:32:59   mattresses often cost over $1,500 casper [TS]

00:33:01   mattresses cost 500 for twin 620 [TS]

00:33:04   extra-long 754 full 854 queen and 954 [TS]

00:33:08   King so it's got a space-age design you [TS]

00:33:11   can try it risk-free from the internet [TS]

00:33:12   without having to go to a show room [TS]

00:33:13   somewhere and the prices are super [TS]

00:33:16   competitive [TS]

00:33:17   they're very good prices so why not give [TS]

00:33:20   it a try [TS]

00:33:21   now go to Casper dot-com / Snell and use [TS]

00:33:25   code Snell at checkout to get fifty [TS]

00:33:27   dollars toward any mattress purchase [TS]

00:33:30   terms and conditions apply [TS]

00:33:31   that's Casper dot-com / smell and thank [TS]

00:33:34   you to Casper for sponsoring the [TS]

00:33:36   incomparable [TS]

00:33:38   should we talk about the episodes a [TS]

00:33:41   little bit just do a little survey sure [TS]

00:33:43   there's episodes I like I want to talk [TS]

00:33:46   about them [TS]

00:33:46   yeah so welcome to help harvest I think [TS]

00:33:48   this is a pretty good pilot [TS]

00:33:50   even though it's not a pilot because I [TS]

00:33:51   just there on YouTube don't watch it but [TS]

00:33:54   they nice two-part episode aired [TS]

00:33:57   together even though they've got [TS]

00:33:58   different directors it was it was [TS]

00:33:59   premiered as a two-part episode even [TS]

00:34:02   though it was obviously produced as two [TS]

00:34:04   separate episodes and this is your you [TS]

00:34:07   know hey we have Jesse and Buffy meets [TS]

00:34:10   her new watcher and they go down in the [TS]

00:34:13   sewers and the the master has got his [TS]

00:34:15   pitch his plot i think it's a good pilot [TS]

00:34:18   we set up all the characters we get the [TS]

00:34:21   new girl at school there's I did [TS]

00:34:22   actually liked that line [TS]

00:34:24   hey did you hear new girl what do you [TS]

00:34:25   tell me about what can you tell me about [TS]

00:34:26   her new girl i kinda like I kind of like [TS]

00:34:30   that the kids are idiots which is why at [TS]

00:34:32   the end the Giants as last line is the [TS]

00:34:35   world is doomed because the teenagers [TS]

00:34:38   are the ones who are gonna have to save [TS]

00:34:39   the world and i really like the opening [TS]

00:34:41   scene that's like the that's adjust just [TS]

00:34:44   wheeling down his car like this is what [TS]

00:34:46   this show is which is it's a pretty [TS]

00:34:48   blonde girl and a big strapping guy and [TS]

00:34:51   they're sneaking into a place to make [TS]

00:34:53   out or something and then there's a [TS]

00:34:55   noise and she's scared he goes to see [TS]

00:34:57   what it is and she turns into a vampire [TS]

00:34:58   and she kills him [TS]

00:35:00   it's like yeah i think the bed that the [TS]

00:35:02   that horror trope of the helpless woman [TS]

00:35:05   alone with a guy in a horror movie that [TS]

00:35:08   the that's like message one in this is [TS]

00:35:11   the little blonde is not going to be the [TS]

00:35:14   victim and that's the show everything [TS]

00:35:16   about the show flipping tropes is just [TS]

00:35:19   like yeah I think it's a great pilot [TS]

00:35:21   because by the end of the first episode [TS]

00:35:24   there's a shot of Giles Xander willow [TS]

00:35:27   and Buffy in the library and even the [TS]

00:35:31   first time I saw is like oh this is [TS]

00:35:33   right this is the team yeah we're gonna [TS]

00:35:35   follow these guys for years [TS]

00:35:37   yep it is another layer of the [TS]

00:35:39   enterprise yep that's exactly exactly [TS]

00:35:42   right [TS]

00:35:43   another scene that I really loving this [TS]

00:35:44   is at the bronze strange business model [TS]

00:35:48   the prize anyway and the promise [TS]

00:35:50   there is that scene where Buffy proves [TS]

00:35:54   her power to Giles he's going to lecture [TS]

00:35:56   her about going out when she should be I [TS]

00:35:58   don't know what studying about vampires [TS]

00:36:00   are patrolling or something and she [TS]

00:36:02   picks out a vampire because not because [TS]

00:36:05   she has some amazing sense but because [TS]

00:36:08   his closer out of date he's been around [TS]

00:36:10   for 30 such a great moment right certain [TS]

00:36:12   that was the odd don't you think so yeah [TS]

00:36:14   it's a great it's a great back-and-forth [TS]

00:36:16   between them and it's just so much about [TS]

00:36:18   how you need to take her seriously even [TS]

00:36:21   though you might not think that you [TS]

00:36:23   should you absolutely should she she's [TS]

00:36:26   she's already very good at what she does [TS]

00:36:28   it's really setting up that relationship [TS]

00:36:30   between the two of them how lake Giles [TS]

00:36:33   is very you know that the English you [TS]

00:36:35   know this is how it's done and Buffy's [TS]

00:36:38   like f that i'm gonna do things my way [TS]

00:36:40   to and you're gonna have to deal with it [TS]

00:36:42   and like we get that right from the [TS]

00:36:45   beginning and it doesn't take Giles too [TS]

00:36:47   long to like be like okay because [TS]

00:36:49   because Lee I'm not going to convince [TS]

00:36:51   her that she needs to do things [TS]

00:36:53   differently and so he adapts to her [TS]

00:36:55   which is something I i really love to [TS]

00:36:57   yeah [TS]

00:36:58   mm that's true yeah but he sees he sees [TS]

00:37:01   here in this seem right that he you know [TS]

00:37:03   he can he can run her down about like [TS]

00:37:05   not taking your job seriously but she's [TS]

00:37:06   got the goods [TS]

00:37:07   she you know she spots the vampires and [TS]

00:37:10   she takes care of the situation and the [TS]

00:37:11   bronze and now yeah I think it's a [TS]

00:37:14   really good pilot it introduces all the [TS]

00:37:16   characters it introduces all the [TS]

00:37:17   tensions that are gonna happen in the [TS]

00:37:18   first season we get Cordelia who was [TS]

00:37:21   initially warm Duffy and then of course [TS]

00:37:22   turns on her because but he's got you [TS]

00:37:25   know stakes in her backpack and is weird [TS]

00:37:27   and hangs around with losers and buffy [TS]

00:37:29   is like these are my friends you're a [TS]

00:37:31   jerk and that and tells her off and then [TS]

00:37:34   becomes unpopular because of it like we [TS]

00:37:36   get everything and we and we do like [TS]

00:37:38   Monty said and on the bridge of the [TS]

00:37:40   enterprise [TS]

00:37:41   this is where there this is where [TS]

00:37:42   they're going to be this is the there's [TS]

00:37:44   your show [TS]

00:37:45   that's what the show was i I was [TS]

00:37:47   rewatching the pilot with I shouldn't [TS]

00:37:50   say pilot the first episode with the [TS]

00:37:52   kids and the fourteen-year-old is [TS]

00:37:55   watching and he goes everywhere they go [TS]

00:37:57   is really dark [TS]

00:37:59   oh yeah you know I said well ok it's you [TS]

00:38:02   know it's [TS]

00:38:02   vampire show for one thing so it does [TS]

00:38:04   kind of have to be dark but but the more [TS]

00:38:06   the more you're watching it was thinking [TS]

00:38:08   like this is great you know you've got a [TS]

00:38:10   nightclub that's badly lit you've got [TS]

00:38:12   tunnels and crypts they're badly lit [TS]

00:38:14   they must have saved so much money on [TS]

00:38:16   manages this is someone running in [TS]

00:38:18   filmmaking and once they can afford [TS]

00:38:19   stunt men in the second season will be [TS]

00:38:22   able to hide them better because it's [TS]

00:38:23   badly lit they don't have stuntman in [TS]

00:38:25   the first season and you know and I [TS]

00:38:27   thought yeah perfunctory fight and now [TS]

00:38:30   it's a little bit and I have one thing [TS]

00:38:32   to say about these the bronze well two [TS]

00:38:35   things 1i think the acoustics the bronze [TS]

00:38:37   are crazy because there's a live band [TS]

00:38:38   and people 20 feet away can have [TS]

00:38:40   conversations [TS]

00:38:41   yeah but also i think the two scenes in [TS]

00:38:43   the bronze were Buffy and Willow talk [TS]

00:38:46   about dating philosophy and then Buffy [TS]

00:38:47   and Giles talk about him scolding her [TS]

00:38:50   and her showing off her powers those [TS]

00:38:52   really feel to me like the scenes that [TS]

00:38:54   the actors had to audition with to see [TS]

00:38:56   if they had chemistry and they do have [TS]

00:38:58   chemistry [TS]

00:38:59   yeah there's just so much about those [TS]

00:39:00   things that established who the [TS]

00:39:01   characters are and how they think and [TS]

00:39:04   how their philosophies clash against [TS]

00:39:05   each other that it feels like they had [TS]

00:39:08   to work through those things first [TS]

00:39:09   so in which there is a this this is the [TS]

00:39:15   cheerleading episode and had to happen [TS]

00:39:18   what you get is this this really [TS]

00:39:20   interesting episode that it's got a [TS]

00:39:22   Cordelia dynamic because she really [TS]

00:39:24   wants to be a cheerleader and there's [TS]

00:39:26   the competition angle here there's the [TS]

00:39:29   pit there's some painful stuff with [TS]

00:39:30   Xander that made me not want to watch [TS]

00:39:33   that part but at its core this is also [TS]

00:39:35   about Amy who is this really weird [TS]

00:39:37   character that we meet who is super [TS]

00:39:39   obsessed with her mother and her [TS]

00:39:40   mother's greatness and you think that [TS]

00:39:42   this is an episode about living up to [TS]

00:39:45   your parents and it turns out it's it's [TS]

00:39:48   worse than that because she's literally [TS]

00:39:50   had her youth and her body stolen by her [TS]

00:39:53   mother so this is the manifestation of [TS]

00:39:55   parents trying to relive their glory [TS]

00:39:57   days through their children in this case [TS]

00:39:59   Amy's mom does literally does that to [TS]

00:40:01   her and then yeah they're spells and [TS]

00:40:03   they steal the spell book and there's a [TS]

00:40:05   creepy scene where they go visit the mom [TS]

00:40:07   and find out that it's amy and she she [TS]

00:40:10   doesn't she's not allowed out and she [TS]

00:40:12   just sits on the couch needs brownies [TS]

00:40:13   all day [TS]

00:40:14   yeah but I i liked this episode because [TS]

00:40:17   it is it is that archetype of of we're [TS]

00:40:20   gonna take an issue of of being a [TS]

00:40:22   growing up and turn it into a [TS]

00:40:24   manifestation of an actual like I'm a [TS]

00:40:26   monster in this case it's like a magic [TS]

00:40:28   adversary like a lot of episodes the [TS]

00:40:31   concept for this one is ok but what if [TS]

00:40:34   that happened literally jump which i [TS]

00:40:36   think is great guy great taking a [TS]

00:40:39   metaphor and saying because i have a [TS]

00:40:41   supernatural so i can make that actually [TS]

00:40:43   happen and then watching how that plays [TS]

00:40:45   out [TS]

00:40:45   I think really what gives the show a lot [TS]

00:40:48   of its legs and the thing i love about [TS]

00:40:49   this is is it actually takes something [TS]

00:40:53   that I really love about Star Trek and [TS]

00:40:55   establishes that right away so in Star [TS]

00:40:58   Trek if especially the next generation [TS]

00:41:01   if you know there's the episode where [TS]

00:41:03   Deanna Troi is having like some [TS]

00:41:06   hallucinations when she's sleeping and [TS]

00:41:08   she goes to captain picard and she's [TS]

00:41:10   like hey this thing is happening and [TS]

00:41:12   instead of Picard being like okay we [TS]

00:41:13   need to get you a psych eval it's like [TS]

00:41:15   okay so what external influences are [TS]

00:41:18   exerting themselves on you and it's the [TS]

00:41:21   same in Buffy how they can go to Giles [TS]

00:41:24   and they can be like look this weird [TS]

00:41:26   thing is happening he's like okay let's [TS]

00:41:28   figure out which what's going on you [TS]

00:41:30   know which is something that teenagers [TS]

00:41:31   don't get a lot of is the benefit of the [TS]

00:41:33   doubt and adults believing that that the [TS]

00:41:36   things that they observe a real and i [TS]

00:41:38   really really love that and it's [TS]

00:41:40   established right away [TS]

00:41:42   meanwhile choices to Buffy Buffy is like [TS]

00:41:44   I haven't gotten in trouble she says [TS]

00:41:45   well not yet right [TS]

00:41:46   it's not a lot of not a lot of belief in [TS]

00:41:49   her at home but one of those gold star [TS]

00:41:52   parenting moments yeah but Giles is like [TS]

00:41:54   oh this is Magic it could be a witch [TS]

00:41:56   right like he's on it [TS]

00:41:58   he's he's seen things yeah and also a [TS]

00:41:59   cheerleader catches on fire so that also [TS]

00:42:01   happens in this also i have to say this [TS]

00:42:04   episode must have under run because [TS]

00:42:06   there is so much cheerleading [TS]

00:42:08   oh my goodness that they they all either [TS]

00:42:11   that or they were really proud that they [TS]

00:42:13   hired a professional dancer to be the [TS]

00:42:15   one cheerleader who catches on fire and [TS]

00:42:17   so they show her doing a whole like [TS]

00:42:19   dance routine my herself and it goes on [TS]

00:42:22   for f yeah really does if you like [TS]

00:42:25   cheerleading maybe like [TS]

00:42:28   better but I i was shocked at how long [TS]

00:42:30   that went next episode is teacher's pet [TS]

00:42:34   this is the first episode about david [TS]

00:42:36   greenwalt who would go on to become [TS]

00:42:37   executive producer and run angel i [TS]

00:42:41   didn't really watch this episode because [TS]

00:42:43   you know it's the one where Xander falls [TS]

00:42:46   in love with the substitute teacher and [TS]

00:42:47   she turns out to be a bug lady [TS]

00:42:49   yeah I didn't watch this one either I [TS]

00:42:51   don't love it what is something boring [TS]

00:42:54   happened literally haha yeah is one [TS]

00:42:59   notable thing and it's it's in the [TS]

00:43:01   beginning which is a teacher actually [TS]

00:43:04   showing an interest in Buffy and showing [TS]

00:43:07   some faith in her abilities and I think [TS]

00:43:10   that is something that is noteworthy [TS]

00:43:12   about this that she is the Slayer right [TS]

00:43:15   like and everybody's looking to her to [TS]

00:43:17   save the day and guide them and and make [TS]

00:43:20   everything okay and she's a teenager and [TS]

00:43:23   she needs reassurance and she needs you [TS]

00:43:26   know people encouraging her and she gets [TS]

00:43:29   that from this teacher and then he's [TS]

00:43:30   eaten by a giant praying mantis but [TS]

00:43:32   that's like an important bit of a [TS]

00:43:36   character not not necessarily [TS]

00:43:40   development but something to note about [TS]

00:43:41   her is that she 16 while character [TS]

00:43:45   understanding [TS]

00:43:46   yeah in never kill a boy on the first [TS]

00:43:51   date we get some dating stress while the [TS]

00:43:53   master is also scheming but she she [TS]

00:43:56   takes out as she takes on a boy but then [TS]

00:43:58   you know bad things happen and he ends [TS]

00:44:02   up being really excited that that she's [TS]

00:44:06   involved in all this adventure and she [TS]

00:44:09   drops him because she doesn't want she's [TS]

00:44:16   trying to look for normalcy in her life [TS]

00:44:18   and and the boy [TS]

00:44:20   oh and cannot give that to her because [TS]

00:44:22   he's sort of like oh it's really cool I [TS]

00:44:24   could [TS]

00:44:24   she's got enough friends helping her in [TS]

00:44:26   this part of her life I think this is [TS]

00:44:28   not a particularly notable episode [TS]

00:44:31   although the master is scheming and the [TS]

00:44:32   anointed one is discovered [TS]

00:44:34   isn't this the first time since the [TS]

00:44:35   pilot that the master shows up again [TS]

00:44:36   that's telling us that he's actually [TS]

00:44:38   going to be a recurring deal [TS]

00:44:39   I think something think so yeah I think [TS]

00:44:41   so yeah I learned to not trust teenage [TS]

00:44:44   boys who are obsessed with Emily [TS]

00:44:46   Dickinson and love her because she's so [TS]

00:44:49   morbid [TS]

00:44:49   I don't think Emily Dickinson was the [TS]

00:44:51   right pic i think Byron or something [TS]

00:44:53   maybe so here black poet even although [TS]

00:44:55   that's a little on the nose but more [TS]

00:44:58   believable in dickinson ah ok the pack [TS]

00:45:01   skipped it skipped it once didn't need [TS]

00:45:05   to see it again this is this is this is [TS]

00:45:08   about like being run with a pack around [TS]

00:45:11   with it with a group and group projects [TS]

00:45:14   with a girl female with group dynamic [TS]

00:45:16   problems with group dynamics and all of [TS]

00:45:19   that and it's definitely you know making [TS]

00:45:21   an issue of it i don't really love the [TS]

00:45:23   the hyenas and all of that [TS]

00:45:26   however it is notable because the [TS]

00:45:28   principal gets eaten in this episode [TS]

00:45:30   mmm yeah and that's okay like what I [TS]

00:45:34   description of this show from 2002 yeah [TS]

00:45:36   on a field trip to the zoo is entered [TS]

00:45:38   joins up with the bad crowd because of [TS]

00:45:40   some magical hyenas then the bad crowd [TS]

00:45:42   starts killing things until the [TS]

00:45:43   zookeeper gets eaten it may sound silly [TS]

00:45:45   but when you watch it it's actually [TS]

00:45:47   Ludacris I have entertained myself from [TS]

00:45:51   the past this episode had something that [TS]

00:45:54   bothered me throughout the series where [TS]

00:45:56   something starts going wrong like you're [TS]

00:45:59   one of your characters becomes a hyena [TS]

00:46:01   or find a magical Letterman's jacket or [TS]

00:46:04   gets hypnotized or whatever and somebody [TS]

00:46:08   always doesn't believe it like in this [TS]

00:46:10   case Giles who doesn't believe that [TS]

00:46:13   something weird is going on and I really [TS]

00:46:15   felt like in the world of this show you [TS]

00:46:19   can't ever poopoo someone who says I [TS]

00:46:21   think there's a supernatural thing [TS]

00:46:22   happening out there is always a [TS]

00:46:24   supernatural thing happening Giles yeah [TS]

00:46:26   well but I mean if we're gonna go with [TS]

00:46:28   that why does anyone live in Sunnydale [TS]

00:46:30   you know like it's nice [TS]

00:46:33   realtor now good look social living at [TS]

00:46:36   real estate scam because there's so many [TS]

00:46:38   empty houses a lot of churn happening my [TS]

00:46:41   turn to be uh the the angel episode is [TS]

00:46:46   is next to this is here you know Hale [TS]

00:46:50   get to know angel see his story [TS]

00:46:53   he was turned into a vampire by Darla [TS]

00:46:55   Darla threatens choice [TS]

00:46:57   Buffy's mom you know any thoughts about [TS]

00:47:01   the the angel episode this is this is [TS]

00:47:03   where it's very much like at last we [TS]

00:47:06   know he's a vampire [TS]

00:47:08   she's a mean it is the Twilight episode [TS]

00:47:09   right except this predates Twilight I [TS]

00:47:11   feel like Buffy just missed the window [TS]

00:47:12   by just a little bit because this is [TS]

00:47:14   super angsty young beautiful girl is in [TS]

00:47:17   love with beautiful guy who turns out to [TS]

00:47:19   be a vampire oh how could their love [TS]

00:47:22   possibly be allowed to continue using [TS]

00:47:25   the lies that is good one [TS]

00:47:26   I know I know tumblr would have loved [TS]

00:47:29   this show never been around always [TS]

00:47:32   something social media has been a thing [TS]

00:47:34   in 1997 oh my god and even even so I [TS]

00:47:38   mean you were on livejournal and and I [TS]

00:47:40   was on livejournal renews groups and you [TS]

00:47:42   know it wasn't that didn't have the same [TS]

00:47:44   penetrating that we didn't have the [TS]

00:47:47   bandwidth to post pictures of David [TS]

00:47:49   Boreanaz brooding face [TS]

00:47:51   no I would go to work and there were [TS]

00:47:52   people at work who loved Buffy and we [TS]

00:47:54   would talk about it like that works [TS]

00:47:56   right was right that was what we did [TS]

00:47:58   that was what we had to do [TS]

00:48:01   David Boreanaz he's ok I think this is a [TS]

00:48:03   good i think this is a good episode i [TS]

00:48:05   think this is not just setting the [TS]

00:48:06   anthology but you're getting all the [TS]

00:48:08   premise of like he's trying to help now [TS]

00:48:10   we know why he's trying to help but also [TS]

00:48:11   he's got this whole problem and he's he [TS]

00:48:13   is a good vampire we get to learn that [TS]

00:48:15   but he's still a vampire and he has all [TS]

00:48:17   these other issues you know there's [TS]

00:48:19   there's no Giles is talk to Joyce so we [TS]

00:48:25   get the the surrogates meeting mr. Giles [TS]

00:48:28   there's just there's a lot there's a lot [TS]

00:48:30   in here so i think this is I think this [TS]

00:48:32   is one of the important episodes of the [TS]

00:48:34   first season for sure I find every [TS]

00:48:36   episode with Joyce is more meaningful [TS]

00:48:37   once you watch the whole series yeah i [TS]

00:48:40   agree like every time I see her and [TS]

00:48:43   thinking oh yeah I know [TS]

00:48:45   ok we were talking about this in the [TS]

00:48:48   incomparable slack today I robot you [TS]

00:48:50   Jane and not a particularly notable [TS]

00:48:52   episode but it does it does feature the [TS]

00:48:55   title [TS]

00:48:56   yeah a good title and there's a scan a [TS]

00:48:59   evil book into a computer which people [TS]

00:49:02   it's a deal [TS]

00:49:03   maybe in the computer it's in the [TS]

00:49:05   computer in the computer watching this [TS]

00:49:08   with two kids of today [TS]

00:49:11   you know I have to have to keep saying [TS]

00:49:13   this is a 1997 so they're like what is [TS]

00:49:16   that that's a computer [TS]

00:49:17   what yeah that's phone phone with for [TS]

00:49:23   that that wasn't thing you know [TS]

00:49:25   oh and it's not that made the watch old [TS]

00:49:28   movies it's not but there's just [TS]

00:49:29   something about all the focus on [TS]

00:49:31   technology and this one that every step [TS]

00:49:33   of the way it's like what is that that's [TS]

00:49:35   something that's a monitor [TS]

00:49:36   that'sthat's they're not flat it's you [TS]

00:49:38   know yeah I feel souls [TS]

00:49:42   I mean tell me it's not a terrible idea [TS]

00:49:46   it's terribly executed yeah they have [TS]

00:49:49   the money for a good demon robot yeah [TS]

00:49:51   yeah Jenny calendars and this that's [TS]

00:49:53   nice i I've never liked it throughout [TS]

00:49:55   the season we get and we get into the [TS]

00:49:56   future [TS]

00:49:57   the whole idea to the willow is I'm just [TS]

00:49:59   going to hack into this thing in [TS]

00:50:00   Sunnydale and and she does that all the [TS]

00:50:03   time and they make jokes about wanted to [TS]

00:50:05   give her a hook [TS]

00:50:06   yeah they did that was her character [TS]

00:50:07   hook it's because of willow that we have [TS]

00:50:09   all the security things now this is a [TS]

00:50:11   whole episode of that kind of like pop [TS]

00:50:13   plots uncomplicated by computer mumbo [TS]

00:50:15   jumbo and here it's they've got a [TS]

00:50:18   there's a demon in the computer this is [TS]

00:50:19   yeah this is this is like a bad x miles [TS]

00:50:22   of myself but yeah yeah well and as [TS]

00:50:26   somebody or a great 24 episodes your [TS]

00:50:31   point as someone who's a contemporary [TS]

00:50:33   with these so my freshman year of high [TS]

00:50:34   school started in 1997 so like it's it's [TS]

00:50:39   right on right and I was very careful [TS]

00:50:42   about my online identity when then like [TS]

00:50:45   I'm a much more like I use my real name [TS]

00:50:48   on twitter i would not have used my real [TS]

00:50:50   name on twitter if it existed in 1987 [TS]

00:50:53   your real name didn't exist to make it [TS]

00:50:56   didn't know that the recent thing a real [TS]

00:50:59   and so so I found it really unbelievable [TS]

00:51:03   that someone as quote plugged in is [TS]

00:51:06   Willow was just be like well Malcolm [TS]

00:51:08   lives 80 miles away and Malcolm's my age [TS]

00:51:11   and Malcolm says blahdy blahdy blah and [TS]

00:51:13   I'm like I was really careful into [TS]

00:51:17   people you know other teams I knew who [TS]

00:51:20   are using you know dial-up internet with [TS]

00:51:23   our fancy modems you know we were really [TS]

00:51:26   careful about and what we believed in [TS]

00:51:30   what we didn't believe and I know that [TS]

00:51:32   wasn't universally true but it just felt [TS]

00:51:35   like the nerdy people like willow were [TS]

00:51:37   more aware than willow tends to be in [TS]

00:51:40   this episode [TS]

00:51:41   well let's let's move on we will kick it [TS]

00:51:43   into the end game of this season the [TS]

00:51:44   puppet show [TS]

00:51:46   I i love the puppet show [TS]

00:51:49   I know that Ali didn't even watch it [TS]

00:51:51   because of the creepy puppet is so I [TS]

00:51:54   watched I was like the last 10 minutes [TS]

00:51:55   of it because like all right I like now [TS]

00:51:57   watch him die again i'm at he's just so [TS]

00:52:02   he's he's too creepy [TS]

00:52:04   well just it's i love that it's II you [TS]

00:52:07   know it takes the trope of like the [TS]

00:52:09   movie magic from the seventies twilight [TS]

00:52:12   zone 2 22 episodes about creamers museum [TS]

00:52:16   and it takes that trope and then it [TS]

00:52:20   turns out wait a minute [TS]

00:52:21   he's not the evil no he is alive but [TS]

00:52:24   he's not the evil one right and and you [TS]

00:52:27   know again the kids are watching this [TS]

00:52:28   we're going oh my god creepy I'll creepy [TS]

00:52:31   to halt its gonna kill people to my god [TS]

00:52:33   oh my god oh wow that's awesome and you [TS]

00:52:36   know once then twist happened he was [TS]

00:52:37   hooked like oh this is a cool idea [TS]

00:52:39   because they set it up right they set it [TS]

00:52:42   up that is that it's not you who have [TS]

00:52:44   they're gonna think it's the kid but [TS]

00:52:45   it's really the doll and then it's not [TS]

00:52:47   the doll either i love that moment when [TS]

00:52:48   Buffy and sit or are like literally at [TS]

00:52:51   each other's throats like about you know [TS]

00:52:53   about like in the middle of going out [TS]

00:52:55   and and Buffy's like you know basically [TS]

00:52:58   you're the one doing all this and he's [TS]

00:53:00   like you're the one doing all of this [TS]

00:53:01   and they're like wait what [TS]

00:53:03   just look at each other and I think that [TS]

00:53:05   that really is a great moment but I just [TS]

00:53:08   he's eat yeah hehe it's so gross [TS]

00:53:12   yeah he is but thatthat's I i could i [TS]

00:53:15   love i love it i love that he's he's [TS]

00:53:17   yeah he's gross annoying and he's cursed [TS]

00:53:19   and he was you know he wasn't always a [TS]

00:53:21   dummy but he's been cursed miss and if [TS]

00:53:23   you can kill this last creature there's [TS]

00:53:26   a whole seven of them and whatever and [TS]

00:53:28   he's killed six and this is less fun [TS]

00:53:29   than he can then [TS]

00:53:30   he's free of this curse which means he's [TS]

00:53:32   gonna die [TS]

00:53:33   I think there's a really funny episode [TS]

00:53:35   and this is a point I wanted to make [TS]

00:53:36   about this whole season in this whole [TS]

00:53:38   series so many shows these days are so [TS]

00:53:41   serious we talked about like even like [TS]

00:53:44   some of this so the Marvel shows or [TS]

00:53:46   series rob this hotel and Dean Batali [TS]

00:53:48   here at this episode road another [TS]

00:53:49   episode this season that wasn't that [TS]

00:53:50   wasn't as good that was that was the [TS]

00:53:52   never kill a boy on the first date but [TS]

00:53:54   these guys are are comedy writers [TS]

00:53:56   I think they were for that 70 show Joss [TS]

00:53:59   Whedon's scripts are funny of the all I [TS]

00:54:03   i get the sense that there is a comedy [TS]

00:54:04   sensibility and the writing here where [TS]

00:54:06   they are looking for jokes to tell and i [TS]

00:54:10   love it and it was such a change of pace [TS]

00:54:12   from the shows that even when they're [TS]

00:54:15   good are so serious and never take a [TS]

00:54:17   moment to lighten the mood or say [TS]

00:54:20   something memorable and funny like [TS]

00:54:22   there's a in in the out of mind out of [TS]

00:54:25   sight episode we're going to talk about [TS]

00:54:26   in a minute [TS]

00:54:27   um there's a stupid one liner we're [TS]

00:54:29   talking about the the kid getting beaten [TS]

00:54:31   up by a bat that was floating in mid-air [TS]

00:54:33   and Sandra says maybe it's a vampire bat [TS]

00:54:36   and they all give him a deathless it's a [TS]

00:54:38   stupid joke but it's like they made a [TS]

00:54:40   joke [TS]

00:54:41   look they made a joke in the show and [TS]

00:54:43   and this episode is full of them and i [TS]

00:54:45   love that it just it it although it is [TS]

00:54:48   in its own little internal consistency [TS]

00:54:50   of its world it is not afraid to just be [TS]

00:54:53   funny and and the show in general I [TS]

00:54:56   think this season in particular is very [TS]

00:54:58   clear that they had that sensibility and [TS]

00:54:59   social so few shows seem to have that i [TS]

00:55:02   will say that it's a sad commentary that [TS]

00:55:04   one of the most serious shows up in the [TS]

00:55:07   superhero genre in marvel's agents of [TS]

00:55:10   shield was in fact created by Joss [TS]

00:55:12   Whedon yeah yeah yeahs the the other [TS]

00:55:16   thing that I really like about this [TS]

00:55:17   episode is that it is constructed I mean [TS]

00:55:21   it's not a murder mystery but it's [TS]

00:55:23   constructed in a similar way where you [TS]

00:55:25   have the the setup it's beautifully laid [TS]

00:55:28   out to have the least likely suspect [TS]

00:55:31   turn out to be the demon that needs to [TS]

00:55:34   be killed but it's so beautifully set up [TS]

00:55:36   that you don't necessarily see it coming [TS]

00:55:38   and i love that kind of plotting i also [TS]

00:55:42   really like the end [TS]

00:55:43   it's showing Xander willow and Buffy [TS]

00:55:46   doing there [TS]

00:55:47   the talent show thing when I think the [TS]

00:55:49   only time they did something over the [TS]

00:55:51   end credits that wasn't just playing [TS]

00:55:52   music / black that they did this this [TS]

00:55:55   there they're awkward stage performance [TS]

00:55:57   we also get Cordelia's terrible terrible [TS]

00:56:00   performance of the greatest love of all [TS]

00:56:03   and she's convinced it's great we have [TS]

00:56:06   and we get armin shimerman throughout as [TS]

00:56:09   the ass new principle is that presents [TS]

00:56:11   warning from deep space nine he's grant [TS]

00:56:14   ave but especially I free my favorite [TS]

00:56:18   moment of his is where he's absolutely [TS]

00:56:20   silent at the end of the show watching [TS]

00:56:22   the Oedipus thing with with Giles next [TS]

00:56:25   time and it's sort of that combination [TS]

00:56:27   of well this is intelligent and they [TS]

00:56:30   picked something classic and they are [TS]

00:56:32   awful [TS]

00:56:33   what if I dialogue that I did doesn't he [TS]

00:56:35   say I don't get it [TS]

00:56:36   he's like I don't get it well that's [TS]

00:56:38   something at the very end of the show [TS]

00:56:40   before that there with a guy his partner [TS]

00:56:43   any cities just sees the tableau and let [TS]

00:56:46   such a great joke right baby that [TS]

00:56:48   there's the there's the guy who's got it [TS]

00:56:50   who's been who's been killed by the [TS]

00:56:52   guillotine and there's the the they're [TS]

00:56:55   holding the they've got the Vatican II [TS]

00:56:58   or the DNA that the ventriloquist dummy [TS]

00:57:00   and there's and and Giles is there and [TS]

00:57:03   all that and then the curtain why but [TS]

00:57:05   the curtain rises and everybody is [TS]

00:57:07   confused and he says I don't get it it's [TS]

00:57:09   just a really great joke like we've all [TS]

00:57:12   been in the moment of them trying to not [TS]

00:57:14   have Giles get guillotine right and [TS]

00:57:16   different and then and we pull back and [TS]

00:57:18   it's like oh there are people out there [TS]

00:57:20   this is ridiculous and it's very funny [TS]

00:57:23   so nightmares is an episode that is not [TS]

00:57:26   very interesting i think it's an [TS]

00:57:29   important sorry david greenwalt [TS]

00:57:30   showrunner of agrium now but this is [TS]

00:57:36   like one of those episodes that I don't [TS]

00:57:38   even remember it's more with the [TS]

00:57:40   annoyance Anointed One anybody watch [TS]

00:57:43   this one it's based on a story by joss [TS]

00:57:46   so joss whedon is given story credit on [TS]

00:57:49   a bunch of episodes toward the end of [TS]

00:57:51   the season where I get the sense that he [TS]

00:57:53   had a lot of ideas four episodes that he [TS]

00:57:55   could be [TS]

00:57:56   he could write them all and so he was [TS]

00:57:58   like oh yeah [TS]

00:57:59   Invisible Girl sure person who's in your [TS]

00:58:02   nightmares yeah you did you write that [TS]

00:58:03   one and one but it is also building to [TS]

00:58:07   that finale that he is writing [TS]

00:58:09   yes that's trained so the little details [TS]

00:58:11   where it's like here you do this and put [TS]

00:58:13   this in there it's an interesting idea [TS]

00:58:15   and I like the graveyard scene so I like [TS]

00:58:18   you know where suddenly Buffy's like it [TS]

00:58:22   was day and now it's night and she's in [TS]

00:58:24   a graveyard and what's going on and this [TS]

00:58:26   is her first encounter with the master i [TS]

00:58:28   mean it's a dream encounter a nightmare [TS]

00:58:30   encounter but it's still her first [TS]

00:58:31   encounter with the master and and it [TS]

00:58:35   really shows you know more more [TS]

00:58:38   character development for Buffy rate [TS]

00:58:39   like what is she really afraid of and I [TS]

00:58:43   thought it was really well done i [TS]

00:58:44   thought it was an interesting concept [TS]

00:58:46   like they could look across the street [TS]

00:58:47   and all the sudden there's there's a [TS]

00:58:49   graveyard there and it's weirdly night [TS]

00:58:52   somehow and the special effects are bad [TS]

00:58:54   so I liked those things and and I also [TS]

00:58:59   kind of like that they don't know what's [TS]

00:59:00   going on right away like it felt like [TS]

00:59:03   meet I don't know maybe it's just the [TS]

00:59:05   episode I don't know it felt like it [TS]

00:59:07   took them a little bit longer to get [TS]

00:59:08   what was actually going on and maybe a [TS]

00:59:11   quicker resolution than normal but I [TS]

00:59:14   kind of like that they had more of a [TS]

00:59:17   struggle because more abstract i guess [TS]

00:59:19   to try to figure out what was causing [TS]

00:59:21   all of this to happen [TS]

00:59:23   okay i don't mind out of sight this is [TS]

00:59:25   the Invisible Girl episode i really [TS]

00:59:26   liked this episode [TS]

00:59:28   although in watching it again I'm shot [TS]

00:59:30   sort of shocked by the pacing of it [TS]

00:59:31   because it goes on a long time there are [TS]

00:59:34   and there there is there there should be [TS]

00:59:37   more is incident in here I feel like and [TS]

00:59:40   instead what we get is sort of repeating [TS]

00:59:42   menace of invisible girl for a long time [TS]

00:59:46   and then they figure out that she's [TS]

00:59:47   invisible and then it takes a long time [TS]

00:59:49   for their to figure out that maybe they [TS]

00:59:51   could throw a curtain honor and beer up [TS]

00:59:53   yeah but that said I really I really [TS]

00:59:56   love the fact that uh [TS]

00:59:56   love the fact that uh [TS]

01:00:00   the this idea and there's a stupid line [TS]

01:00:03   with Giles is like of course this is [TS]

01:00:04   about physics and all that stuff no it's [TS]

01:00:06   not it's crazy [TS]

01:00:07   yeah but said no this is about physics [TS]

01:00:09   but it is the core thing about metaphors [TS]

01:00:11   coming true in high school on Buffy that [TS]

01:00:15   I love this is a girl who nobody pays [TS]

01:00:17   attention to until she disappears and i [TS]

01:00:19   just love that almost fable aspect of it [TS]

01:00:22   it's like this is what happens when [TS]

01:00:24   somebody is ignored is that they become [TS]

01:00:27   they become invisible and then they then [TS]

01:00:30   they act out it's about people being [TS]

01:00:33   cruel this is a monster that you all [TS]

01:00:34   created by being awful people to this [TS]

01:00:37   person i think it's interesting that [TS]

01:00:39   also we get the guys in the suits and in [TS]

01:00:43   something that has never really followed [TS]

01:00:45   up on ya again there's almost this X [TS]

01:00:48   Files aspect of the government although [TS]

01:00:50   it leads to a great little last scene [TS]

01:00:53   where the government knows that people [TS]

01:00:54   turn invisible and they take them and [TS]

01:00:56   train them to be a SATs ok alright so [TS]

01:01:01   the other thing that happens in this [TS]

01:01:02   episode is Cordelia really is kind of [TS]

01:01:03   brought into the into the circle right [TS]

01:01:06   she is she is she is being attacked by [TS]

01:01:08   marcy because Marcy hates Cordelia [TS]

01:01:11   because Cordelia's the worst right and [TS]

01:01:15   and she's gonna and she ties Cordelia up [TS]

01:01:18   and then she's going to attack Cordelia [TS]

01:01:20   and she's gonna cut out and she can hear [TS]

01:01:22   her talking but she knows she's [TS]

01:01:23   invisible she's gonna disfigure her face [TS]

01:01:25   and make her look ugly and and and learn [TS]

01:01:29   to live with not being pretty like she [TS]

01:01:32   is and so Cordelia like gets what Buffy [TS]

01:01:36   and her gang are actually all about in [TS]

01:01:38   this and she she you know she thanks [TS]

01:01:40   them at the end but also just she like [TS]

01:01:42   is no longer oblivious to what's going [TS]

01:01:44   on which right man [TS]

01:01:46   it takes another trope of you know the [TS]

01:01:48   mean girl was just always going to be [TS]

01:01:50   the mean girl and she's never going to [TS]

01:01:52   mature and she's never gonna grow up and [TS]

01:01:54   in this she becomes the damsel in [TS]

01:01:56   distress and she become saved and even [TS]

01:01:59   though she doesn't you know a hundred [TS]

01:02:00   percent reform at this point she's on [TS]

01:02:03   the path and and she I mean through the [TS]

01:02:05   rest of the series of angel she does [TS]

01:02:06   evolve which is lovely to watch so this [TS]

01:02:09   is it again that's you know taking a [TS]

01:02:11   trip that we all think we know [TS]

01:02:13   and how can we twist it how can we make [TS]

01:02:15   it new and she doesn't involve right [TS]

01:02:17   away she gets clued in and you start to [TS]

01:02:19   know what's going on but she's still [TS]

01:02:21   kind of a mean girl and I think that's [TS]

01:02:23   interesting because a lot of shows would [TS]

01:02:25   say Oh Cordelia's knows what's going on [TS]

01:02:28   now she's part of the team or an ally [TS]

01:02:30   really not yeah every time this is also [TS]

01:02:34   i think this is the episode where she [TS]

01:02:37   comes to Buffy and Buffy's like why are [TS]

01:02:41   you here and she says do you think I'm [TS]

01:02:43   not know this is the kind of thing you [TS]

01:02:44   do right [TS]

01:02:45   wheres liya know she's been paying [TS]

01:02:47   attention a little bit or trying not to [TS]

01:02:49   but this is she can't she can't deny it [TS]

01:02:52   anymore that this is actually Buffy's [TS]

01:02:55   the person you go to with stuff like [TS]

01:02:56   this [TS]

01:02:57   yeah that this kind of presages great [TS]

01:03:00   moment later in the series during the [TS]

01:03:01   graduation it's a it's it's just I like [TS]

01:03:04   all the feelings the high school [TS]

01:03:05   feelings though that such a part of this [TS]

01:03:08   the show for me all of this stuff like [TS]

01:03:10   just a moment like Cordelia says she's [TS]

01:03:14   pushing explains why she's popular and [TS]

01:03:16   she's like you know you think I don't [TS]

01:03:17   feel lonely in the in that crowd where [TS]

01:03:20   everybody is just agreeing with whatever [TS]

01:03:22   I say and nobody is listening to what I [TS]

01:03:24   have to say they just want to agree [TS]

01:03:25   because I'm popular and Buffy says well [TS]

01:03:28   then why do you do it just as well it [TS]

01:03:30   beats being it being alone by yourself [TS]

01:03:32   like wow yeah challenge [TS]

01:03:35   everybody's got everybody's got [TS]

01:03:36   something even Cordelia everybody's got [TS]

01:03:38   something [TS]

01:03:38   it also has to spend some time laying [TS]

01:03:40   the groundwork for the finale it does it [TS]

01:03:42   even begins in furniture around as they [TS]

01:03:45   say there's a lot of that it's true [TS]

01:03:48   alright the finale prophecy girl season [TS]

01:03:51   finale 12-episode Buffy the master [TS]

01:03:53   prophecies the girl quakes if i'm not [TS]

01:03:57   mistaken it's Joss Whedon's directorial [TS]

01:04:00   debut [TS]

01:04:01   yes this is ruthie written and directed [TS]

01:04:03   by joss whedon episode the first one [TS]

01:04:07   Monty you said you have many things to [TS]

01:04:08   say about prophecy girl so let's go to [TS]

01:04:09   it [TS]

01:04:10   okay on this episode has the scene that [TS]

01:04:14   hooked me on the show and still my [TS]

01:04:16   favorite scene in the series [TS]

01:04:18   it's the one where Buffy explains that [TS]

01:04:21   she is 16 and doesn't want to die [TS]

01:04:23   yep mm well she has so many notes [TS]

01:04:27   to hit in that she's talking back tears [TS]

01:04:29   what she says [TS]

01:04:30   did they say how he's going to kill me [TS]

01:04:32   do you think it'll hurt like that entire [TS]

01:04:34   scene because Buffy has spent the entire [TS]

01:04:37   season so far [TS]

01:04:39   basically being a remorseless quippy [TS]

01:04:41   badass some sadness but mostly being an [TS]

01:04:45   unstoppable machine and hear you you're [TS]

01:04:47   reminded she's in high school and she's [TS]

01:04:51   fighting vampires [TS]

01:04:52   I think it's just an amazing scene and [TS]

01:04:55   then my second favorite scene in the [TS]

01:04:56   episode is her walking back in saying up [TS]

01:04:59   I'm the Slayer because she's taking on [TS]

01:05:02   her mantel enough you have just destroy [TS]

01:05:03   things [TS]

01:05:04   yeah great she tries to quit right she's [TS]

01:05:06   like no equip him if I'm gonna die down [TS]

01:05:09   quick to find a new Slayer a quick [TS]

01:05:10   timeout [TS]

01:05:11   yeah and she has to go through that [TS]

01:05:12   whole period where she like tries to [TS]

01:05:14   reject her calling i guess this is some [TS]

01:05:17   good hero's journey is enough happening [TS]

01:05:19   here right [TS]

01:05:20   well I mean those those two speeches are [TS]

01:05:22   the mission statement of the show the [TS]

01:05:25   series yeah yeah because it's both it is [TS]

01:05:27   she is 16 and she's the Slayer can i [TS]

01:05:30   just say how great Sarah Michelle Gellar [TS]

01:05:32   is we didn't talk about the characters [TS]

01:05:35   we know I just burst in and there's [TS]

01:05:36   Buffy right she specifically told this [TS]

01:05:38   whole thing together [TS]

01:05:40   she's got a she's gotta show [TS]

01:05:41   vulnerability and strength [TS]

01:05:44   uh she's gotta show that she's a kid but [TS]

01:05:46   also has a wisdom it is this is a hard [TS]

01:05:50   thing to do and in lesser hands this [TS]

01:05:53   show would not have made it right i mean [TS]

01:05:54   this is yeah we talked about casting [TS]

01:05:56   sometimes and I know we talked about in [TS]

01:05:57   previous episodes that sometimes you get [TS]

01:06:00   lucky with casting or you do good [TS]

01:06:01   casting and it can make the difference [TS]

01:06:03   between the show working and not working [TS]

01:06:04   and she kills it she was a soap opera [TS]

01:06:08   actress from when she was very young but [TS]

01:06:12   in this she she carries she just she [TS]

01:06:16   she's not alone she's got other people [TS]

01:06:18   to help her out but chic she carries the [TS]

01:06:20   burden of being the lead in this action [TS]

01:06:23   show about feelings in high school and [TS]

01:06:26   she just she just nails it and you're [TS]

01:06:29   right Monty none better than that scene [TS]

01:06:31   where she says I don't I don't want to [TS]

01:06:33   die [TS]

01:06:34   you know this has been this has been [TS]

01:06:35   kind of fun and all but you know they're [TS]

01:06:37   she's basically gotten the news that [TS]

01:06:39   tomorrow [TS]

01:06:40   the prophecy says you will die and she [TS]

01:06:42   she has to go through that whole you [TS]

01:06:45   know rejection of that I don't want to [TS]

01:06:46   do that and she goes home and her mom [TS]

01:06:48   gives her a beautiful dress for the [TS]

01:06:50   dance [TS]

01:06:50   oh it is a beautiful dress by the way [TS]

01:06:52   everyone keeps telling me that she sets [TS]

01:06:54   we have been you know that whole casting [TS]

01:06:57   thing if you look at the unaired pilot [TS]

01:06:59   and don't go look at the unaired pilot [TS]

01:07:02   but it'll show you know you know even [TS]

01:07:04   when even you know like most of the cast [TS]

01:07:06   is there but they don't gel the same way [TS]

01:07:09   because it's not it's just there's one [TS]

01:07:12   thing that's not quite working and this [TS]

01:07:15   combination of actors was just right you [TS]

01:07:18   know how that alchemy works if they had [TS]

01:07:20   miscast any of the other characters in [TS]

01:07:22   the in the original pilot who knows if [TS]

01:07:24   they had gone forward right but i think [TS]

01:07:28   they knew what they had in Giles and [TS]

01:07:30   buffy and you know it was like we need [TS]

01:07:32   to fix this and make it better and they [TS]

01:07:34   did think I'm i also appreciate [TS]

01:07:36   appreciate speaking of a american [TS]

01:07:40   stereotypes of the British like Giles is [TS]

01:07:41   upset so he goes to make tea [TS]

01:07:43   hey oh that just cracks me out and then [TS]

01:07:46   cleans his glasses rate of course while [TS]

01:07:49   it's sleeping we did miss another pilot [TS]

01:07:51   we did miss Stephen Tobolowsky as the [TS]

01:07:53   principal did didn't get that is true [TS]

01:07:56   that would have been ok he would've just [TS]

01:07:58   been eaten by hyenas or something almost [TS]

01:08:00   certainly great great line in this I [TS]

01:08:03   like when the the so-so also the [TS]

01:08:07   prophecy thing here it's so funny [TS]

01:08:09   because it it plays with the whole idea [TS]

01:08:11   prophecy right the master says oh haha [TS]

01:08:13   but by coming here you have fulfilled [TS]

01:08:16   the prophecy because she's going there [TS]

01:08:18   because that's the prophecy but her [TS]

01:08:20   being there is what frees the master [TS]

01:08:21   because he gets to suck your blood and [TS]

01:08:23   that gives him the power to to escape [TS]

01:08:25   that's kind of funny and then she dies [TS]

01:08:27   but of course there's more to the story [TS]

01:08:28   because she's revived by Xander but [TS]

01:08:31   there is a great moment when the when [TS]

01:08:32   the master is is freed and there's the [TS]

01:08:34   earthquake and after this dramatic [TS]

01:08:37   earthquake [TS]

01:08:38   the master says what do you think 5.1 [TS]

01:08:40   that's a yes Southern California joke [TS]

01:08:44   but I love it I love it yeah everybody [TS]

01:08:46   always hundred percent accurate tries to [TS]

01:08:48   guess what the richter scale of your [TS]

01:08:50   quick what's right [TS]

01:08:51   Kazmir earthquake but what do you think [TS]

01:08:53   my point is pretty casual for a guy in a [TS]

01:08:55   cave filled with candles during an [TS]

01:08:57   earthquake yeah he's a master he started [TS]

01:09:00   that's it's just his style man he's been [TS]

01:09:02   through worse [TS]

01:09:02   yeah he had to put up with Angelus is [TS]

01:09:04   Irish accent at some point that a lot of [TS]

01:09:07   people so there's a faucet of blood that [TS]

01:09:10   happens at one point just like just we [TS]

01:09:12   could do that there's a possibility that [TS]

01:09:14   there's a father with blood and the [TS]

01:09:17   difficult creature from the the opening [TS]

01:09:21   of the Hellmouth in the library [TS]

01:09:22   yeah the library has like tentacles [TS]

01:09:24   coming out there a bunch of vampires [TS]

01:09:25   coming in and there's like a last in a [TS]

01:09:28   library and again Cordelia's there with [TS]

01:09:30   them [TS]

01:09:31   there's a horrifying scene where [TS]

01:09:33   Cordelia and we'll go into the into the [TS]

01:09:35   room that which is I guess the AV club [TS]

01:09:37   it's like the tvs and the boys are all [TS]

01:09:39   in there including court the boy [TS]

01:09:40   Cordelia's going to the dance with who [TS]

01:09:42   we've seen in the last couple of [TS]

01:09:43   episodes and the end and they're all [TS]

01:09:45   theres a river shot we realize they're [TS]

01:09:47   all dead and they go in and find that [TS]

01:09:49   there's like eight high school boys [TS]

01:09:51   who've been murdered on campus which is [TS]

01:09:53   horrifying but it is played as [TS]

01:09:56   horrifying right it's if they give it [TS]

01:09:58   all of the detail [TS]

01:10:00   I mean it's Sunnydale so you know that [TS]

01:10:01   probably happens every day but still [TS]

01:10:03   they give it the horror that it deserves [TS]

01:10:05   which i think is i think is good and [TS]

01:10:06   Cornelius appropriately upset by that I [TS]

01:10:11   think Cordelia is great in this episode [TS]

01:10:13   because she gets the cool get in and [TS]

01:10:15   then drives through the entire school [TS]

01:10:17   set they must have decided if we get a [TS]

01:10:20   second season we're going to have more [TS]

01:10:22   money or something [TS]

01:10:23   just just destroy the whole thing we're [TS]

01:10:25   going to make some changes so so up and [TS]

01:10:27   Buffy says something like this isn't [TS]

01:10:28   usually how we get to the line where he [TS]

01:10:30   could she just drives down the hallway [TS]

01:10:33   but then parks right out in front of the [TS]

01:10:35   doors to the library and which is very [TS]

01:10:36   nice so that the vampires can come in [TS]

01:10:38   and swarm them and then Buffy's final [TS]

01:10:41   showdown with the with the master he's [TS]

01:10:45   he's on the roof and its gates [TS]

01:10:46   perfunctory right i mean it's not one of [TS]

01:10:48   their better fights in a few years later [TS]

01:10:50   they would have had a whole big [TS]

01:10:51   choreographed fight but instead it's [TS]

01:10:53   pretty perfunctory grabs her she tells [TS]

01:10:55   him he is free punch mouth she punches [TS]

01:10:56   them pics you know does a couple of [TS]

01:10:58   flips so they'd have us done person [TS]

01:11:01   because they've got bumpy Buffy stunt [TS]

01:11:02   person to do occasional flips and then [TS]

01:11:05   you know he gets thrown through the [TS]

01:11:06   glass dome atop the library and hail but [TS]

01:11:09   one of the many many spires of wood that [TS]

01:11:12   stick out in Sunnydale yep [TS]

01:11:14   yeah well you know the the library is [TS]

01:11:16   broken right so I always thought the [TS]

01:11:18   vampire should have gone through town [TS]

01:11:20   and just saw all the pokey bit of wood [TS]

01:11:22   off the streets and paper i didn't like [TS]

01:11:25   how her whole attitude changes once she [TS]

01:11:29   comes back to life right yeah she's much [TS]

01:11:33   more like oh I've been dead and I face [TS]

01:11:36   death and I've come back and yeah the [TS]

01:11:39   Slayer and i am yeah and so at the very [TS]

01:11:41   end [TS]

01:11:42   she's you know when when they're they're [TS]

01:11:44   having their confrontation you know he's [TS]

01:11:46   got her by the throat he's doing the [TS]

01:11:48   hypnotic thing and she just kind of you [TS]

01:11:49   know she does it for a second is like [TS]

01:11:51   yeah screw you [TS]

01:11:52   yeah you know it's it's very it's like [TS]

01:11:55   again it's like that's that growth from [TS]

01:11:58   episode 1 episode 12 not knowing that [TS]

01:12:00   they would ever get to make anymore and [TS]

01:12:02   so that is a satisfying ark although the [TS]

01:12:05   whole thing where she's like oh hey I'm [TS]

01:12:07   here let's discuss this before I kill [TS]

01:12:09   you I was just like man again you're [TS]

01:12:12   confident now but like why not just take [TS]

01:12:15   him no monologue no monologue just kill [TS]

01:12:18   him already [TS]

01:12:19   it's a show about dialogue yeah that's [TS]

01:12:22   right let's just quickly dialogue anyway [TS]

01:12:24   she does finally they do a little fight [TS]

01:12:25   and she throws him down and he's impaled [TS]

01:12:27   as the wikipedia page says impaled on [TS]

01:12:30   broken furniture conveniently upturn [TS]

01:12:33   pointy wooden maybe Brody and furniture [TS]

01:12:35   that's nice [TS]

01:12:37   they have that shot that's like it very [TS]

01:12:40   established as the this is what he's [TS]

01:12:43   gonna die on you know like yeah it's [TS]

01:12:45   yeah it's very convenient [TS]

01:12:46   yeah it'sit's Chekhov's upturned pointy [TS]

01:12:49   broken furniture [TS]

01:12:50   yeah and so they uh oh there's a good [TS]

01:12:52   next generation episode in here to there [TS]

01:12:55   are referencing here too because they [TS]

01:12:56   actually enter actually refers to Giles [TS]

01:12:58   is look you notice of the Borg which [TS]

01:13:02   made me laugh and in the end yeah the [TS]

01:13:05   big the big bad is defeated and every [TS]

01:13:08   and everybody is a is happy and they [TS]

01:13:11   save the world and that's the end which [TS]

01:13:14   say they go off to spring slightly party [TS]

01:13:16   what yeah yeah it's not [TS]

01:13:18   killing him is not the end the end is [TS]

01:13:20   when everybody is happy and laughing and [TS]

01:13:22   gets to go off and be high school [TS]

01:13:23   students for the night [TS]

01:13:25   exactly but he's got the dress she might [TS]

01:13:27   as well wear it so they go to the bronze [TS]

01:13:29   which part of its business model holding [TS]

01:13:32   high school dances [TS]

01:13:33   you didn't give me no can't use the [TS]

01:13:36   stereo system yeah [TS]

01:13:37   nope i like to hear faint where they [TS]

01:13:39   pretended they were going to have a big [TS]

01:13:41   massive vampires attack the prom and at [TS]

01:13:45   first I'm thinking oh like in the movie [TS]

01:13:47   and then apparently someone said that's [TS]

01:13:49   expensive and also what if we focused on [TS]

01:13:52   our main character yeah just yeah and it [TS]

01:13:53   turned around and brought it back into [TS]

01:13:55   the core which is the right call [TS]

01:13:57   so season 1 Buffy overall you know that [TS]

01:14:01   having revisited a little bit and [TS]

01:14:02   knowing that you know some people say oh [TS]

01:14:04   that first season is not that good it [TS]

01:14:05   really gets good season to all season [TS]

01:14:06   two is fantastic but i think that you [TS]

01:14:09   know I i think that you underestimate [TS]

01:14:11   season one at your peril or something [TS]

01:14:14   like that [TS]

01:14:15   what do you all think Eileen I agree I I [TS]

01:14:18   don't think Buffy starts to shine until [TS]

01:14:20   the college years and you know from what [TS]

01:14:22   I've seen but i think that this season [TS]

01:14:25   one is is underrated for sure David yeah [TS]

01:14:29   i mean their shows that justifiable II [TS]

01:14:33   you know the first season of the office [TS]

01:14:35   and first season of parks and recreation [TS]

01:14:37   which I love as a series [TS]

01:14:41   yeah don't fall daughter season-low bad [TS]

01:14:44   yeah just don't it's not there this is [TS]

01:14:47   not one of those shows this is a good [TS]

01:14:49   cut first season is it you know I and i [TS]

01:14:52   think i think people underestimated [TS]

01:14:54   because they're judging it against the [TS]

01:14:56   later years and they're judging it [TS]

01:14:58   against when when everything was firing [TS]

01:15:01   on all cylinders in the second and third [TS]

01:15:03   and fourth seasons [TS]

01:15:04   uh-huh so you know alright yes it's a [TS]

01:15:06   little simpler the pacing is a little [TS]

01:15:08   slower [TS]

01:15:09   they're doing a little bit more [TS]

01:15:10   exposition because this is totally new [TS]

01:15:13   right this is not a show or concept that [TS]

01:15:16   has existed for a while Monte what's [TS]

01:15:18   your first season Buffy final final [TS]

01:15:21   analysis / judgment i like the first [TS]

01:15:24   season back in 2003 there was a website [TS]

01:15:28   called TV dot org [TS]

01:15:30   you might remember and for the end of [TS]

01:15:32   buffy we all listed we listed our top 10 [TS]

01:15:36   episodes and my top 10 were different [TS]

01:15:38   from everyone else's but I had [TS]

01:15:40   prophesied girl as my second favorite [TS]

01:15:42   episode because of that great scene that [TS]

01:15:45   I love so much about how she doesn't [TS]

01:15:47   want to die and i think I stand by that [TS]

01:15:48   like that well that is i think i would [TS]

01:15:51   certainly put that up in the top scenes [TS]

01:15:53   of the entire series [TS]

01:15:54   I mean that is just heartbreaking and [TS]

01:15:57   yeah there's some silly stuff in the [TS]

01:15:59   season yeah so what you can't like some [TS]

01:16:00   silly stuff come on advances in agree i [TS]

01:16:04   like prophecy girl a lot that is a great [TS]

01:16:06   i I just I feel like I watched that and [TS]

01:16:09   I said why [TS]

01:16:10   as much as I loved that famous you know [TS]

01:16:12   best of both worlds next-generation [TS]

01:16:14   cliffhanger and then everybody started [TS]

01:16:15   doing cliffhangers [TS]

01:16:17   i loved how prophecy girl ends I loved [TS]

01:16:22   that the show told the story got to the [TS]

01:16:25   end the big bad guy from the whole [TS]

01:16:27   season was dispatched the characters got [TS]

01:16:30   to enjoy the fact that they would had [TS]

01:16:32   won the day and we had a little you know [TS]

01:16:35   the end and the end and maybe it'll come [TS]

01:16:37   back for more and and it did but uh but [TS]

01:16:40   it was like a a really nice ending and [TS]

01:16:42   and a really meaty episode and and I [TS]

01:16:45   remember thinking this is how I would [TS]

01:16:47   like my season finales to feel and and [TS]

01:16:50   that influence has been felt no I like I [TS]

01:16:53   like season one I think I think you know [TS]

01:16:54   i'm not going to argue that it's the [TS]

01:16:55   best season of buffy but i-i-i don't [TS]

01:16:58   feel like it's like next generation [TS]

01:17:00   where the first year is is it's [TS]

01:17:03   disposable I think this is a yes it is [TS]

01:17:05   adorable [TS]

01:17:06   it's an adorable show with a low budget [TS]

01:17:08   and some good funny writing and a good [TS]

01:17:11   cast and they're figuring out how to [TS]

01:17:12   make the show and it's gonna be great [TS]

01:17:14   soon but it's not the same where it's [TS]

01:17:17   like wow this is kind of garbage I'm [TS]

01:17:18   wait until it gets good [TS]

01:17:20   that's not how the first season of buffy [TS]

01:17:22   works it's more like you're just [TS]

01:17:24   watching it's like a little uh like a [TS]

01:17:25   newborn a like horse or something it's [TS]

01:17:28   like the legs are a little spindly and [TS]

01:17:30   it's kind of messy but it's a it's gonna [TS]

01:17:32   win the Derby you can already tell that [TS]

01:17:34   it's going to be a pretty great thing [TS]

01:17:36   yeah if this were on the air right now [TS]

01:17:37   you'd be delighted to watch it all right [TS]

01:17:40   well we have we done it will come back [TS]

01:17:42   at some point and talk about the second [TS]

01:17:43   Susan it's very sad there's a sword and [TS]

01:17:45   something gets run through with it at [TS]

01:17:47   the end and it's very sad but and we [TS]

01:17:49   meet some interesting people in season [TS]

01:17:51   two but we will get there at a later [TS]

01:17:53   time so I'd like to thank my guests for [TS]

01:17:55   taking this trip down memory lane back [TS]

01:17:56   to nineteen ninety-seven with me David [TS]

01:17:59   Laura thank you [TS]

01:17:59   pleasure as always and I'm you know we [TS]

01:18:17   actually thank you thank you Jason and [TS]
