The Incomparable

295: A History of Things That Never Happened

00:00:00   the incomparable Number 295 a 30 2016 [TS]

00:00:08   welcome back everybody to be [TS]

00:00:12   uncomfortable i'm jason l we have [TS]

00:00:14   convened a UH a panel at the last moment [TS]

00:00:17   because today yes we received a an [TS]

00:00:21   official teaser trailer for a new star [TS]

00:00:23   wars movie and the public demanded that [TS]

00:00:25   we talked about it we've got lots of [TS]

00:00:27   other episodes about lots of other [TS]

00:00:28   subjects in the incomparable wings [TS]

00:00:31   getting ready for their close-up but no [TS]

00:00:33   in this episode we're going to talk [TS]

00:00:35   about a trailer for Star Wars road one [TS]

00:00:38   sorry robo-one a Star Wars story [TS]

00:00:42   joining me to talk about this trailer [TS]

00:00:44   possibly frame-by-frame who knows our [TS]

00:00:47   John siracusa hello [TS]

00:00:49   there's not that many frames so Irene I [TS]

00:00:52   feel like we have to address each one in [TS]

00:00:54   turn sure and we will do so [TS]

00:00:56   yes and a more'n hello [TS]

00:00:59   coming in coming to us live from another [TS]

00:01:02   so the last one we did the trailer [TS]

00:01:03   analysis of the I think the second [TS]

00:01:05   teaser of the force awakens dan was on [TS]

00:01:07   the west coast traveling and he is that [TS]

00:01:09   again and I mean I'm on a mission [TS]

00:01:11   I can't talk about it and serenity [TS]

00:01:13   called was coming back from from a [TS]

00:01:16   roller derby practice and cult from the [TS]

00:01:19   car while we're trying to reach her in [TS]

00:01:21   the car but we have been unsuccessful as [TS]

00:01:22   of yet so we're going to go ahead [TS]

00:01:24   perhaps you will join us later perhaps [TS]

00:01:25   you want but uh so road one star wars [TS]

00:01:29   story we got we got some we got some [TS]

00:01:30   stuff here any any opening statements in [TS]

00:01:33   the opening slots about this this is a [TS]

00:01:35   this is we gotta go we gotta go whole [TS]

00:01:37   hog here right this is the first first [TS]

00:01:40   thing since what the Ewok adventure of [TS]

00:01:42   the star wars holiday special this is a [TS]

00:01:44   the the animated star wars clone wars [TS]

00:01:48   movie this is this feels like they're [TS]

00:01:50   putting all those aside this is the [TS]

00:01:52   first like real star wars movie that is [TS]

00:01:55   not in the Star Wars saga [TS]

00:01:57   yeah i agree with that it's also the [TS]

00:01:59   first stand-alone star wars movie really [TS]

00:02:01   i mean you can kind of count you know [TS]

00:02:04   and you open that because you know there [TS]

00:02:06   was unclear whether or not they're going [TS]

00:02:07   to be more movies when they first made [TS]

00:02:09   it but at the same time it was also [TS]

00:02:10   always kind of designed to be [TS]

00:02:12   an episode in a larger story where is [TS]

00:02:14   this I gotta feel like you know aside [TS]

00:02:17   from maybe overlapping sets and like [TS]

00:02:19   settings and stuff like that i don't [TS]

00:02:21   think we're going to see anything of [TS]

00:02:23   these characters again probably write [TS]

00:02:25   like this seems like a pretty [TS]

00:02:26   self-contained story I shouldn't get my [TS]

00:02:28   hopes up the road to an drug three [TS]

00:02:30   well I mean eventually we've got a real [TS]

00:02:33   leader [TS]

00:02:34   we've got road to is his wedge think I [TS]

00:02:36   used all those titles for the video [TS]

00:02:37   games already but we got a veritable [TS]

00:02:40   rogues gallery John yeah we had a [TS]

00:02:42   squadron who knows how many roads we can [TS]

00:02:45   get here and disable to this is actually [TS]

00:02:47   rouge one I feel like the pressure is [TS]

00:02:49   off [TS]

00:02:50   I off everybody like for this movie its [TS]

00:02:53   affiliates off of the people making the [TS]

00:02:55   movie because I mean I guess a little [TS]

00:02:56   bit of pressure is like like you said [TS]

00:02:58   Dan like that that oh I may I have to be [TS]

00:03:00   the first one to make a movie that's not [TS]

00:03:02   one of the Star Wars movies as in this [TS]

00:03:04   big long continuing story that's been [TS]

00:03:06   going on for all our lives on the other [TS]

00:03:08   hand I like we said I think we [TS]

00:03:10   originally talked about the disney deal [TS]

00:03:11   if you make a couple of these and [TS]

00:03:14   they're so so or are greater than a [TS]

00:03:16   couple of sinkers because they are [TS]

00:03:18   standalone and because they're not part [TS]

00:03:19   of the saga like that's what we want you [TS]

00:03:21   want to see people stretching out and [TS]

00:03:25   doing interesting new things so I was [TS]

00:03:29   much more relaxed about this like they [TS]

00:03:30   did the publicity shot i forgot this [TS]

00:03:32   trailer is even coming out until a [TS]

00:03:33   couple days before and some just like [TS]

00:03:35   you know i don't i don't feel like the [TS]

00:03:38   weight of the world on my shoulders like [TS]

00:03:39   with the force awakens like all please [TS]

00:03:40   please don't mess this up please [TS]

00:03:42   this is just like I'm I'm ready to be [TS]

00:03:44   pleasantly surprised and I don't have a [TS]

00:03:47   lot of like trepidation going in now is [TS]

00:03:50   how much of that is because of the force [TS]

00:03:52   awakens and how much of that is just [TS]

00:03:53   because it isn't connected to the over [TS]

00:03:55   all sort of Star Wars story [TS]

00:03:57   it helps that the force awakens shows [TS]

00:03:59   that the people who now on the franchise [TS]

00:04:01   know what that they're doing that really [TS]

00:04:03   really does help but I i still think [TS]

00:04:06   just having them be independent and this [TS]

00:04:09   way like I'm excited about the the [TS]

00:04:11   possibility of variety because the saga [TS]

00:04:13   the soggy is what the saga is you know [TS]

00:04:15   the whole epic story of Star Wars but [TS]

00:04:17   it's constraining in a way to and so I [TS]

00:04:20   just I just like to think about all the [TS]

00:04:22   different kinds of stories they can tell [TS]

00:04:23   with a star wars sighs budget [TS]

00:04:26   hoping that the tentpole movies will [TS]

00:04:28   keep people interested in the franchise [TS]

00:04:29   enough that even if they do a weird one [TS]

00:04:31   this doesn't look weird wonder if they [TS]

00:04:32   do a weird one that people will go to it [TS]

00:04:34   because like I just saw the you know [TS]

00:04:36   episode 8 last year and it was awesome [TS]

00:04:39   and they're doing on the movie and it [TS]

00:04:40   has a star wars Brandon let's go for it [TS]

00:04:42   i don't know what happens at 49 but for [TS]

00:04:45   now i'm i'm excited about the [TS]

00:04:47   possibilities well I mean there's also [TS]

00:04:49   the the element of like sort of the [TS]

00:04:51   premise one of the things that we've [TS]

00:04:52   always loved about this is a franchise [TS]

00:04:54   is that it's supposed to be this vast [TS]

00:04:56   universe and yet we've only really seen [TS]

00:04:58   little tiny slices of it over the course [TS]

00:05:02   of you know seven movies now and so the [TS]

00:05:05   fact that we have all these other realms [TS]

00:05:06   to experiment in and explorer is like [TS]

00:05:10   well you know those were always there in [TS]

00:05:12   some way but we never really got a [TS]

00:05:14   chance because we were so focused on [TS]

00:05:15   this one main plot thread which [TS]

00:05:17   certainly had galactic complications but [TS]

00:05:19   at the same time like what about all [TS]

00:05:21   those other people that are there are [TS]

00:05:22   billions upon billions of other people [TS]

00:05:24   in this in this galaxy right like some [TS]

00:05:26   of them surely have interesting stories [TS]

00:05:27   to tell in a manger leave with our [TS]

00:05:29   characters or not but you know I think [TS]

00:05:32   one of the things that true people are [TS]

00:05:35   lots of the Expanded Universe to during [TS]

00:05:37   the era where there were no official [TS]

00:05:38   Star Wars movies was exploring all these [TS]

00:05:41   other different aspects of the galaxy [TS]

00:05:44   yeah they're not straying too far to [TS]

00:05:45   begin with but this one obviously is [TS]

00:05:46   we're all about the death star and right [TS]

00:05:48   before a new hope you know this is kind [TS]

00:05:50   of tied in but and I I think that's fine [TS]

00:05:53   especially like you know you start from [TS]

00:05:55   the heart of this organ and branch out [TS]

00:05:57   but the nice thing about having like you [TS]

00:05:59   know [TS]

00:06:00   surely there are other stories you know [TS]

00:06:01   we saw you see the big story but other [TS]

00:06:03   stories that the other stories aren't [TS]

00:06:05   even necessarily less important like [TS]

00:06:06   it's the type of thing where I yeah we [TS]

00:06:10   were following are our heroes in our [TS]

00:06:11   main characters a but if you had [TS]

00:06:13   followed any small group of people you [TS]

00:06:14   would have seen that their victories and [TS]

00:06:18   defeats were you know that part of the [TS]

00:06:20   the same struggle so in this movie the [TS]

00:06:22   whole thing is you're getting the plans [TS]

00:06:23   for the death star whatever if they [TS]

00:06:25   hadn't gotten those plans no new hope no [TS]

00:06:28   whole saga like every piece of it has to [TS]

00:06:30   fit together you know and who's to say [TS]

00:06:31   what's more important lesson for was it [TS]

00:06:33   more important that Luke you know did [TS]

00:06:35   the trench run no transform without [TS]

00:06:37   these plans were [TS]

00:06:38   it is not because Luke is not in this [TS]

00:06:41   movie is a movie less important and so [TS]

00:06:43   that's that's just concentrating you [TS]

00:06:44   know still around the saga but as you [TS]

00:06:46   branch out word any movies like within [TS]

00:06:48   the universe it's the most important [TS]

00:06:50   thing that happens in the lives of the [TS]

00:06:52   people you see in the movie for the most [TS]

00:06:53   part and that can make a compelling [TS]

00:06:55   movie even if you know the entire galaxy [TS]

00:06:58   is not a stake in this entire galaxy [TS]

00:07:00   actually happens to be a steak but i [TS]

00:07:02   think it's fine to have movies where [TS]

00:07:03   it's not the whole galaxy isn't it steak [TS]

00:07:05   but it's a smaller scale type of thing [TS]

00:07:08   well it's interesting to you bring that [TS]

00:07:09   up because because this is so closely [TS]

00:07:11   linked with the stories that we already [TS]

00:07:13   know and love so much [TS]

00:07:15   you know one might argue well some of [TS]

00:07:17   the suspense is gone we know the Death [TS]

00:07:19   Star plans are eventually acquired right [TS]

00:07:22   like that that is the thing that [TS]

00:07:23   otherwise like he said those rest of [TS]

00:07:25   those movies would not have happened but [TS]

00:07:27   it seems like they're drawing a [TS]

00:07:28   compelling enough story about these [TS]

00:07:30   characters that we haven't met and about [TS]

00:07:32   you know the things that we haven't seen [TS]

00:07:35   to draw Sen so that there are still some [TS]

00:07:38   interesting aspects to that story like [TS]

00:07:40   we know what the maybe central thrust of [TS]

00:07:42   this is but we don't necessarily know [TS]

00:07:43   all the details or who the players are [TS]

00:07:46   you know and that's that's something I i [TS]

00:07:48   think it's especially interesting to [TS]

00:07:49   tread on this territory that has been [TS]

00:07:50   covered in the expanded universe and [TS]

00:07:53   clearly to throw out a bunch of that [TS]

00:07:55   stuff which is you know as we all knew [TS]

00:07:57   going in when the disney acquisition [TS]

00:07:58   happened like you know the EU is not [TS]

00:08:00   long for this world and so presenting [TS]

00:08:03   that as sort of like you know they've [TS]

00:08:04   converted that into legends and it's [TS]

00:08:05   like well they may acknowledge or borrow [TS]

00:08:08   some stuff from it but they may also [TS]

00:08:09   just equally decided to toss everything [TS]

00:08:11   you know [TS]

00:08:13   so being able to say like I well you [TS]

00:08:14   know there are many legends or stories [TS]

00:08:16   about how the Death Star plans were [TS]

00:08:18   acquired here sort of the canonical [TS]

00:08:20   version i think is kind of a cool thing [TS]

00:08:22   that you can do now is like you you [TS]

00:08:24   don't have to necessarily wipe those [TS]

00:08:25   things out yes there's only one way it [TS]

00:08:27   really happened but because this galaxy [TS]

00:08:30   is so large you know I think especially [TS]

00:08:31   when you look at force awakens and [TS]

00:08:33   really realize the scope of you know [TS]

00:08:35   these people did not know Jedi exist [TS]

00:08:37   because you know for the last half a [TS]

00:08:39   century there's only been one sort of [TS]

00:08:42   half Jedi and it was a thing that [TS]

00:08:43   probably did not cross paths with any of [TS]

00:08:46   them in their entire life so of course [TS]

00:08:47   it's more like a myth [TS]

00:08:48   so you know having this sort of [TS]

00:08:49   mythological structure in place where [TS]

00:08:51   you can say like others [TS]

00:08:52   these stories about things that have [TS]

00:08:53   happened before you know I think gives [TS]

00:08:55   them a lot of freedom that that you [TS]

00:08:57   don't necessarily get a lot of other [TS]

00:08:58   frameworks we've been talking about this [TS]

00:09:00   as a as a standalone movie which is [TS]

00:09:04   interesting because it's not it's not [TS]

00:09:05   quite that right it it's it's a [TS]

00:09:08   standalone movie in the sense that the [TS]

00:09:11   vet it's a a going to tell a story and [TS]

00:09:14   then at the end of the story will be [TS]

00:09:16   over but it is not a standalone movie in [TS]

00:09:19   the sense that it is taking place inside [TS]

00:09:21   of or in parallel with or slightly [TS]

00:09:24   before the original Star Wars so I'm [TS]

00:09:28   curious what you guys think about that [TS]

00:09:29   the idea of going back and I don't [TS]

00:09:31   expect that there will be a forest gump [TS]

00:09:34   like appearance where Luke runs across [TS]

00:09:37   and then our character and the [TS]

00:09:40   background although i wouldn't put it [TS]

00:09:41   past him but you know they could have [TS]

00:09:43   Darth Vader in this movie they could [TS]

00:09:45   have the emperor in this movie there are [TS]

00:09:46   things that they could do with and when [TS]

00:09:49   they do have mon mothma in this movie [TS]

00:09:51   who is a character in star wars so so [TS]

00:09:53   they are going back and playing with [TS]

00:09:55   that movie and what happens around it [TS]

00:09:58   and I'm I'm so it's not often some other [TS]

00:10:01   planet with characters you've never [TS]

00:10:03   heard of it some characters you've heard [TS]

00:10:06   of and it's a planet that we've seen and [TS]

00:10:08   and so curious what you guys think about [TS]

00:10:09   that the idea of going back and telling [TS]

00:10:12   stories inside these you know famous [TS]

00:10:14   influential stories from the original [TS]

00:10:17   Star Wars movies a good thing is a bad [TS]

00:10:19   thing or is it just a different feel [TS]

00:10:20   like the way you can get away with that [TS]

00:10:22   is up by recognizing like you even [TS]

00:10:25   though I just like who's to say what's [TS]

00:10:27   more important here [TS]

00:10:28   one thing you can say in terms of like [TS]

00:10:30   political rank or organizational [TS]

00:10:33   structure is the princess leia is near [TS]

00:10:36   the top of the rebellion right even in [TS]

00:10:38   star wars in a very important person [TS]

00:10:40   there's the Senate there's something [TS]

00:10:42   like if you draw a big org chart of the [TS]

00:10:44   various factions here and there's a [TS]

00:10:46   bottom of that org chart to and what it [TS]

00:10:49   looks like in this movie is you can [TS]

00:10:51   imagine everybody in this movie going [TS]

00:10:52   about their business operating at sort [TS]

00:10:55   of the leaf nodes and sort of middle [TS]

00:10:56   management layer and having their [TS]

00:10:59   mission and never having to have any [TS]

00:11:01   real interaction with [TS]

00:11:02   the top of the rebellion saying you know [TS]

00:11:04   we're gonna need some plans for this [TS]

00:11:05   thing that they're doing or whatever [TS]

00:11:07   right [TS]

00:11:07   as in you know you are our hero here [TS]

00:11:10   does not look to be in charge of a huge [TS]

00:11:13   swath of the rebellion [TS]

00:11:14   she's just you know a single lone person [TS]

00:11:17   who is recruited into this this you know [TS]

00:11:20   effort right so I feel like you can have [TS]

00:11:22   an entire movie about adventures [TS]

00:11:25   connected to or in parallel with or [TS]

00:11:27   whatever though the larger story but you [TS]

00:11:31   don't have to necessarily have it's like [TS]

00:11:32   having a spy movie where you never see [TS]

00:11:35   the president [TS]

00:11:36   it's fine to have you know I don't in [TS]

00:11:37   the Jason Bourne movies i remember how [TS]

00:11:38   many of you actually see the president [TS]

00:11:39   tried the president is involved this is [TS]

00:11:41   the US government you know a thing or [TS]

00:11:43   whatever but you can have a whole spy [TS]

00:11:44   movie without involving like the the [TS]

00:11:47   generals in charge of the army or the [TS]

00:11:49   President or anything like that and I [TS]

00:11:51   think that's one easy out here is their [TS]

00:11:54   education to see Darth Vader does this [TS]

00:11:56   stuff raised his level of notice for [TS]

00:11:58   concern what they do the job well no he [TS]

00:12:00   never knows they were there they get in [TS]

00:12:02   they get out they get their stuff and [TS]

00:12:03   only later did you find out that [TS]

00:12:05   someone's got the plans because they [TS]

00:12:06   know exactly where to shoot the little [TS]

00:12:07   uh photon torpedo right photon torpedo [TS]

00:12:10   jeez who syracuse i've got Star Wars and [TS]

00:12:14   Star Trek confused i didn't get confuse [TS]

00:12:17   my traitorous mouth did and in fact I [TS]

00:12:20   think John's point makes even more sense [TS]

00:12:21   when you think about the fact that this [TS]

00:12:22   rebellion is you know a lot of the other [TS]

00:12:24   place places we see it is predicated as [TS]

00:12:26   sort of like you know a network of cells [TS]

00:12:29   right so in fact it makes more sense [TS]

00:12:30   that you know Princess Leia especially I [TS]

00:12:32   think we you know in some ways were [TS]

00:12:33   given to expect for the most part that [TS]

00:12:35   before the events of the new hope she is [TS]

00:12:38   kind of you know nominally may be in [TS]

00:12:40   charge but is not really directly [TS]

00:12:42   associated with most of the rebellion [TS]

00:12:43   right because she sort of legitimate [TS]

00:12:44   face and so to do that to behave are [TS]

00:12:47   actually involved in those operations [TS]

00:12:49   would put everything at risk right so in [TS]

00:12:51   fact it makes sense in some ways just [TS]

00:12:53   from a storytelling perspective that she [TS]

00:12:54   doesn't have to get involved and I [TS]

00:12:55   agreed like you could have her fate or [TS]

00:12:57   the Emperor but like John says like is [TS]

00:12:59   that is that the important part of the [TS]

00:13:01   story and then you run the storytelling [TS]

00:13:02   issues there too because if you have a [TS]

00:13:04   bunch of like rebels run up against you [TS]

00:13:06   know Darth Vader to tie gonna go outside [TS]

00:13:09   go and it's not i'm in assume it's it's [TS]

00:13:11   going to be you know sort of [TS]

00:13:13   omniscient narrator everything like it's [TS]

00:13:15   not going to be a point of view movie we [TS]

00:13:16   only see we fall one character we only [TS]

00:13:18   see what they see so at any time you [TS]

00:13:20   could cut to you know the Empire [TS]

00:13:23   boardroom or Darth Vader's have another [TS]

00:13:25   argument about his ancient religion or [TS]

00:13:27   something at any time you could show the [TS]

00:13:28   higher reaches you could show the [TS]

00:13:30   princess leia doing something you can [TS]

00:13:31   show Vader your shoulder talking with a [TS]

00:13:33   temper but why would you have that scene [TS]

00:13:35   unless it's part of the plot of the [TS]

00:13:36   movie like I feel like you can you could [TS]

00:13:38   work that in because those people are [TS]

00:13:40   alive they're running around doing their [TS]

00:13:42   jobs but unless their jobs are directly [TS]

00:13:44   connected to the specific plot of this [TS]

00:13:47   movie and these characters there's no [TS]

00:13:49   reason to show the mother than perhaps [TS]

00:13:50   fanservice so i think i will give them a [TS]

00:13:53   pass on a few like oh there's a [TS]

00:13:55   millennium falcon flying by in the [TS]

00:13:56   background or something or not do [TS]

00:13:58   something that happens later but tractor [TS]

00:13:59   beams and you know it the desktop [TS]

00:14:01   looking like a moon that's all fine and [TS]

00:14:04   good but I don't think you know that [TS]

00:14:06   there is necessarily any reason for our [TS]

00:14:08   heroes from the saga [TS]

00:14:10   good guys bad guys or anyone related to [TS]

00:14:13   be involved in the mission that this [TS]

00:14:16   movie is about because this type of [TS]

00:14:17   mission is going to be a hush-hush type [TS]

00:14:21   of thing and that's what I mean every [TS]

00:14:22   word imagine that's why they recruited [TS]

00:14:24   nobody she's a you know a capable rebel [TS]

00:14:26   but no one knows who she is if you need [TS]

00:14:28   someone to infiltrate she doesn't have [TS]

00:14:30   like a little dossier and in the [TS]

00:14:33   Empire's computer saying oh yeah she's [TS]

00:14:35   totally you know what you know she's [TS]

00:14:37   just another you know random person off [TS]

00:14:39   the street who is the they don't know [TS]

00:14:42   anything about because she's beneath [TS]

00:14:43   their notice [TS]

00:14:44   well into Jason's question about linking [TS]

00:14:46   stuff and telling stories within the [TS]

00:14:47   saga [TS]

00:14:48   I think the greater virtue here [TS]

00:14:49   especially is that you get to use a [TS]

00:14:53   language that you otherwise you know [TS]

00:14:55   we've seen sort of a door like a derived [TS]

00:14:57   from that language in episode 7 or the [TS]

00:14:59   like hints and sensibilities of the [TS]

00:15:01   original of the design from the original [TS]

00:15:03   trilogy service seeps into like and [TS]

00:15:05   informs what the you know what the [TS]

00:15:08   universe looks like 30 years later but [TS]

00:15:10   here we're inside that moment right like [TS]

00:15:11   there was a great bit and I was watching [TS]

00:15:13   some of the force awakens background [TS]

00:15:15   materials and they were talking about [TS]

00:15:17   designing the falken especially and they [TS]

00:15:18   talked about like as if they were [TS]

00:15:20   approaching it as like a period movie [TS]

00:15:22   they were trying to get accurate all the [TS]

00:15:23   details on the Millennium Falcon in [TS]

00:15:25   in episode 7 so they looked like the [TS]

00:15:27   same ship essentially from the original [TS]

00:15:29   trilogy and so in the same way you know [TS]

00:15:32   we essentially have that language of all [TS]

00:15:34   these like we're seeing original storm [TS]

00:15:35   troopers were speaking original Star [TS]

00:15:37   Destroyers we're seeing you havin right [TS]

00:15:39   like you can not only use sort of like [TS]

00:15:41   this is literally a quick shortcut of [TS]

00:15:42   like hey this is the universe wherein [TS]

00:15:44   remember this but like in if we had seen [TS]

00:15:47   that you know that slavish a sort of [TS]

00:15:50   adherence to the original trilogy is [TS]

00:15:52   design sensibilities in episode 7 we [TS]

00:15:54   might have kind of rolled her eyes a [TS]

00:15:55   little bit been like oh we're just [TS]

00:15:57   reusing all this stuff but like here [TS]

00:15:59   work in that time period so it makes [TS]

00:16:01   sense it's a period this period movie [TS]

00:16:03   it's in the period is star wars it's [TS]

00:16:05   1977 in a galaxy far far away [TS]

00:16:08   that's best for this movie takes place [TS]

00:16:10   you fewer bell-bottoms but yeah yeah no [TS]

00:16:13   I i love that about it i was really [TS]

00:16:15   happy to see as well we'll see when we [TS]

00:16:18   go through it see stormtroopers the old [TS]

00:16:19   kind I i enjoying a promising new kind [TS]

00:16:21   but it's like yeah they're the old kind [TS]

00:16:23   and some new kinds the Star Destroyers [TS]

00:16:25   gave me chills as i said i like it just [TS]

00:16:27   took my hair on my arms went up just [TS]

00:16:29   watching them because they had that like [TS]

00:16:30   you know drifting slowly forward like [TS]

00:16:32   that iconic first shot like for [TS]

00:16:33   sequencing you open i said they're going [TS]

00:16:35   oh man you know like this is it's not [TS]

00:16:38   just like we had a new star wars movie [TS]

00:16:40   and it was good but now we have like a [TS]

00:16:42   new stuff is pretty bits like [TS]

00:16:43   contemporaneous with all those stars [TS]

00:16:45   movies that we love them something about [TS]

00:16:47   that is even even more giddy inducing [TS]

00:16:50   and it's tricky to do that like like the [TS]

00:16:52   special feature on the Millennium Falcon [TS]

00:16:53   because you're gonna tease and computer [TS]

00:16:55   right and none of the original ones were [TS]

00:16:57   done computer they're all models right [TS]

00:16:59   and so it like it you like how do you [TS]

00:17:02   how do you make a computer thing that [TS]

00:17:04   looks on camera like the models did and [TS]

00:17:07   part of that is camera moves you know [TS]

00:17:09   like moving the camera like you know as [TS]

00:17:11   if it was you were constrained by I like [TS]

00:17:12   the motion control cameras that they had [TS]

00:17:14   to use back then but part of it is just [TS]

00:17:15   figure out how to light the thing and [TS]

00:17:17   I'm it had the same problem with the [TS]

00:17:18   Millennium Falcon of like how shiny [TS]

00:17:20   should it be how dull how much dirt how [TS]

00:17:23   much detail should we add you you're [TS]

00:17:25   kind of stuck not doing anything that [TS]

00:17:30   the model couldn't or didn't do and [TS]

00:17:32   looking at these the starter story like [TS]

00:17:34   the one close of the head of a [TS]

00:17:35   like even here there the the lighting on [TS]

00:17:38   is a bit more dynamic I mean a bit more [TS]

00:17:40   realistic you know i would imagine [TS]

00:17:41   because you know they're rather than [TS]

00:17:43   just blasting the thing with spotlights [TS]

00:17:45   and putting into the blue screen just [TS]

00:17:46   hoping to get a good clean Matt line on [TS]

00:17:49   the thing in computers we have so much [TS]

00:17:50   more flexibility for nuance but then to [TS]

00:17:53   my eyes it doesn't look like the models [TS]

00:17:55   right it looks it looks different it [TS]

00:17:57   looks fresher it looks a little bit more [TS]

00:18:00   detailed to my eye a little bit more [TS]

00:18:02   modern while the same time of course all [TS]

00:18:04   the geometry is exactly as we expect [TS]

00:18:06   because you know the play laser scan the [TS]

00:18:07   things and everything so that's an [TS]

00:18:09   interesting balancing act same thing [TS]

00:18:10   with the death star itself which totally [TS]

00:18:12   look like a big model that someone [TS]

00:18:14   spray-painted especially in a new hope [TS]

00:18:16   and here it looks more like a giant [TS]

00:18:17   space station again a little more detail [TS]

00:18:20   and everything like that so it's it's [TS]

00:18:22   kind of weird as if like your memories [TS]

00:18:24   of childhood were like low definition [TS]

00:18:26   and then this is like this is like I did [TS]

00:18:30   the limitations of our storytelling [TS]

00:18:32   technology didn't allow you to see the [TS]

00:18:33   world of a new hope as it actually [TS]

00:18:34   existed but now you're actually in a new [TS]

00:18:36   hope and this is what it looks like if [TS]

00:18:38   you were there and like had your [TS]

00:18:39   contacts in or whatever [TS]

00:18:40   yeah yeah i agree agree completely and [TS]

00:18:42   it's it's it's fascinating to see them [TS]

00:18:44   walk that line of trying to make things [TS]

00:18:46   look correct but better and it was one [TS]

00:18:50   of the things I always got struggled [TS]

00:18:51   with the prequels right which was how do [TS]

00:18:53   we depict this world that is you know [TS]

00:18:56   sort of the pre-fall world and [TS]

00:18:59   everything in that looked a little too [TS]

00:19:00   too shiny nice etc and it was hard to [TS]

00:19:04   draw that line and I think episode 7 did [TS]

00:19:07   a much better job of like production [TS]

00:19:08   design and trying to like grow out of [TS]

00:19:10   that but yeah here they have the [TS]

00:19:12   advantage of being able to just sort of [TS]

00:19:13   go to the source throughout the episode [TS]

00:19:15   7 had the advantage of over the prequels [TS]

00:19:17   is that they got to show technology [TS]

00:19:19   advancing and I mean yet within reason [TS]

00:19:21   obviously but they the prequels had were [TS]

00:19:25   the product of an incredibly advanced [TS]

00:19:26   technology that supposedly takes place [TS]

00:19:29   before the stuff that we saw that was [TS]

00:19:31   made using technological ideas of the [TS]

00:19:34   seventies and eighties and so boy that's [TS]

00:19:36   a tough time at everything so here here [TS]

00:19:38   i think it's kind of brilliant that they [TS]

00:19:40   they really just get to use Star Wars as [TS]

00:19:42   a model and [TS]

00:19:43   the the costuming and the art direction [TS]

00:19:45   of Star Wars as as at least their basis [TS]

00:19:48   for for the world the parts of the world [TS]

00:19:50   that we've seen and and well maybe we [TS]

00:19:53   should go through the trailer now how [TS]

00:19:54   about that [TS]

00:19:55   what do you think sounds like a plan [TS]

00:19:56   alright so opening scene we have [TS]

00:19:58   felicity jones who is the star of this [TS]

00:20:01   movie and we see her being led into an [TS]

00:20:05   area that I believe is a rebel alliance [TS]

00:20:07   controlled area there are right does it [TS]

00:20:11   just seem it's got to get all those guys [TS]

00:20:13   think she's almost certainly it seems [TS]

00:20:14   like you haven't been for ya [TS]

00:20:16   I mean all their bases all the bases [TS]

00:20:18   start to look the same over after a [TS]

00:20:19   while they're all kind of you even the [TS]

00:20:21   one in the force awakens was kind of [TS]

00:20:22   modeled after this because it got you [TS]

00:20:24   know but the second shot rebel base [TS]

00:20:25   second shot of the of the trailer has [TS]

00:20:27   pillars with like vines on them which is [TS]

00:20:29   totally a Yavin thing right [TS]

00:20:32   so some of the some of the set pieces [TS]

00:20:34   they have an answer for their shots [TS]

00:20:35   there are exact look to me to be exact [TS]

00:20:38   duplicate of stuff from that last base [TS]

00:20:41   sequence in New Hope where they're like [TS]

00:20:43   where you know watching the attack on [TS]

00:20:45   the Death Star they're gonna get you out [TS]

00:20:46   of thing yes like the stadium i was like [TS]

00:20:49   the stadium from clash of the titans [TS]

00:20:51   where the little figures you know a [TS]

00:20:52   little like what why are you looking [TS]

00:20:53   down at the screen in the middle of a [TS]

00:20:54   circular pit now it's like an overhead [TS]

00:20:56   projector they are me we got the person [TS]

00:21:00   in a like one of those helmets with the [TS]

00:21:02   like the bike helmet kind of thing with [TS]

00:21:04   a with a thing going on backward or like [TS]

00:21:07   that down the back like like is in is in [TS]

00:21:10   Star Wars she's got handcuffs on [TS]

00:21:12   apparently which is interesting [TS]

00:21:15   intriguing right why it why is this [TS]

00:21:18   character in handcuffs although I'm [TS]

00:21:19   still not entirely sure that this isn't [TS]

00:21:21   her at the end of the movie [TS]

00:21:22   well i think it's i think it's the setup [TS]

00:21:24   the classic setup you know of any there [TS]

00:21:27   are so many more like so this is a you [TS]

00:21:29   know what would be called and sort of i [TS]

00:21:31   don't use the gender terms men on a [TS]

00:21:33   mission but like on a mission movie [TS]

00:21:35   right like this is the the Dirty Dozen [TS]

00:21:37   like oh you're no good but we need your [TS]

00:21:40   kind of no good to carry this out right [TS]

00:21:42   and like the thing is that like the [TS]

00:21:44   thing is that we were so you single you [TS]

00:21:47   know obviously think talk a little bit [TS]

00:21:48   about sort of the the gender roles and [TS]

00:21:50   interesting choices they made ever like [TS]

00:21:51   we're so used to seeing that as a as a [TS]

00:21:53   male protagonist like that is a trip [TS]

00:21:56   it is [TS]

00:21:57   much less common with a field female [TS]

00:21:58   protagonist and so I think it definitely [TS]

00:21:59   feels a little more fresh in that way [TS]

00:22:02   but like you could probably name a dozen [TS]

00:22:04   movies where it starts out with like the [TS]

00:22:06   government wants to recruit this person [TS]

00:22:08   who is trying to get him out of jail it [TS]

00:22:10   like like the rocker whatever like we [TS]

00:22:12   gotta pee so bad we already have been in [TS]

00:22:13   prison and I think she's being led she's [TS]

00:22:15   in handcuffs right and i think the [TS]

00:22:17   trooper the day they're the rebel [TS]

00:22:18   soldier that is leading her is also a [TS]

00:22:20   woman I couldn't tell what the helmet is [TS]

00:22:22   it's hard to a long hair long hair [TS]

00:22:25   slight build or a very young man but be [TS]

00:22:27   the way like that type of thing I mean [TS]

00:22:30   they did it with the original screen [TS]

00:22:31   shot of the cast and everything like [TS]

00:22:33   that that you're right same damage that [TS]

00:22:37   the the usually like that we need you [TS]

00:22:39   because you're the toughest the most [TS]

00:22:42   resourceful guy even though you're you [TS]

00:22:43   know the outlaw or whatever [TS]

00:22:46   always when there's a bunch of people [TS]

00:22:47   leading someone and hang-ups is a bunch [TS]

00:22:49   of men no matter who is in the handcuffs [TS]

00:22:50   why would you have anyone leaving people [TS]

00:22:52   hanging up two aren't meant because it's [TS]

00:22:53   just like an impossibility in the movie [TS]

00:22:55   to have a hero and handcuffs led by a [TS]

00:22:58   bunch of guards it's got all have to be [TS]

00:23:00   n right and I I think like right off the [TS]

00:23:02   bat at the very least it's ambiguous the [TS]

00:23:05   idea that there's there are you know [TS]

00:23:07   that fifty percent of these people help [TS]

00:23:09   the people in this movie are not men and [TS]

00:23:12   somehow the rebel line still functions [TS]

00:23:14   we got it we got a couple of droid [TS]

00:23:17   cameos in this family shot in the end [TS]

00:23:21   what looks like some kind of a hangar [TS]

00:23:23   bay there's a she's being left across [TS]

00:23:25   also the the rebels are playing a little [TS]

00:23:29   bit loose with their security [TS]

00:23:30   arrangements and that they're allowing [TS]

00:23:31   the and cuffed prisoner of to walk [TS]

00:23:33   behind the guard which is kind of weird [TS]

00:23:36   well isn't this so many rebels they [TS]

00:23:39   actually tries to jump in mind it's not [TS]

00:23:40   gonna let you know how do you know the [TS]

00:23:42   rebels are not big on they're not [TS]

00:23:43   policemen David they are rebels but [TS]

00:23:45   there's an x-wing in the background and [TS]

00:23:47   there's a there's a there's a gunk then [TS]

00:23:50   we see on the left and on the right [TS]

00:23:51   there is a you know I don't know there's [TS]

00:23:53   a not one of those it's a canister droid [TS]

00:23:56   of some kind i don't wanna canister dry [TS]

00:23:59   don't want to assume which are and which [TS]

00:24:01   d it is but it's in the general canister [TS]

00:24:03   and after Mac am mr. you know it's like [TS]

00:24:06   a vacuum cleaner right it's gonna come [TS]

00:24:07   in the upright in the canister this is [TS]

00:24:09   canister model it's the I i thought what [TS]

00:24:12   like our 5d for kind of guy [TS]

00:24:14   there's a couple this couple of them in [TS]

00:24:15   the shop yeah the drug makers have some [TS]

00:24:17   fun I was excited to see I'd forgotten [TS]

00:24:19   like I was the altec swings the original [TS]

00:24:21   yeah so used to seeing the force awakens [TS]

00:24:23   one they get those this for circular [TS]

00:24:25   engines staring you in the face with the [TS]

00:24:27   big Jay Jay loves to build physical [TS]

00:24:29   x-wings and you know what the people who [TS]

00:24:30   build them as I can you feel more I can [TS]

00:24:32   tell that's a real physical actually [TS]

00:24:34   literally the people who build them will [TS]

00:24:38   gladly build you more because the way [TS]

00:24:40   you can tell if it's a physical like [TS]

00:24:41   swinging by the way I don't want to ruin [TS]

00:24:42   her for people that like to tell it is [TS]

00:24:44   this is CG x-wing although the TV people [TS]

00:24:46   I shouldn't be saying this was not going [TS]

00:24:47   to hear me and fix this and burn my [TS]

00:24:49   system but I as anyone who has ever [TS]

00:24:51   built an x-wing out of anything [TS]

00:24:52   including the large-scale lego one's [TS]

00:24:54   nose is really really hard to get the [TS]

00:24:57   wings of an x-wing to stay parallel to [TS]

00:24:59   the ground because they droop because [TS]

00:25:01   they're thin and long and heavy and so [TS]

00:25:04   no matter what you build it out unless [TS]

00:25:05   you build it out of titanium like [TS]

00:25:06   especially people that out of wood or [TS]

00:25:07   something like that [TS]

00:25:08   the physical ones the wings droop a [TS]

00:25:10   little bit so if you see the wings [TS]

00:25:11   dripping a little bit probably a [TS]

00:25:13   physical one [TS]

00:25:14   if they are exactly parallel to the [TS]

00:25:15   ground probably see Jesus so top 40 and [TS]

00:25:18   everybody else in ilm take note want to [TS]

00:25:20   make it look real estate you gotta you [TS]

00:25:22   get a chance to make amends siracusa [TS]

00:25:24   just a little bit of true or the the [TS]

00:25:26   model maker ones could actually use very [TS]

00:25:28   very stiff material like you know carbon [TS]

00:25:30   fiber honeycomb to actually make the [TS]

00:25:31   parallel to the ground that cost too [TS]

00:25:32   much that's not gonna happen [TS]

00:25:33   how is it that the gunk droid as dumb as [TS]

00:25:35   it isn't in so many Star Wars movies [TS]

00:25:38   it's just necessarily really easy to [TS]

00:25:39   make if you have a couple of trash cans [TS]

00:25:41   yeah living together for you and put a [TS]

00:25:44   little person in it we never call this [TS]

00:25:46   the gunk is a kid this was the walking [TS]

00:25:47   trash can LOL and tragic androids that [TS]

00:25:50   was a real yeah yeah power Droid i think [TS]

00:25:53   if you want to go with the the other [TS]

00:25:54   vernacular but yeah i think it's it's [TS]

00:25:56   just one there's only one of them in the [TS]

00:25:57   entire stars galaxies gets around gets [TS]

00:25:59   around [TS]

00:26:00   yeah power doesn't mean he's like a [TS]

00:26:02   battery he's just like a portable [TS]

00:26:04   battery walks over and you a charge your [TS]

00:26:06   iPhone [TS]

00:26:06   Wow legislators only place on the sides [TS]

00:26:08   so many the budgetary like constraints [TS]

00:26:11   of the seventies for the original star [TS]

00:26:13   wars have you know been translated into [TS]

00:26:16   and in of the star wars universe because [TS]

00:26:18   like we can especially like we need a [TS]

00:26:20   bunch of roboti background things are [TS]

00:26:23   not important that i can be starting the [TS]

00:26:25   movie themes like roboti how cheaply can [TS]

00:26:27   we make something that looks roboti was [TS]

00:26:28   one solution 45 minute 45 seconds maybe [TS]

00:26:32   nobody ever even remember it was there [TS]

00:26:35   meanwhile i don't know actually 4 430 [TS]

00:26:37   years people will be free streaming it [TS]

00:26:39   an action figure out a bit ly great say [TS]

00:26:41   it was a little person with little [TS]

00:26:42   plastic things on their legs a little [TS]

00:26:44   plastic shoes into trash cans good [TS]

00:26:46   together and goes good doctor and they [TS]

00:26:48   made them in action figure out of it [TS]

00:26:50   you're like wait wait wait that was and [TS]

00:26:51   then now it's just that the just just [TS]

00:26:53   run with it guys just run with it [TS]

00:26:55   ya donk one else's were so if we could [TS]

00:26:59   go across the bay there is the x-wing in [TS]

00:27:01   the background there's you know there's [TS]

00:27:02   steam coming up there people are like [TS]

00:27:04   welding things there's a droid and it [TS]

00:27:08   appears that she is then brought into a [TS]

00:27:11   tactical area this is a control room the [TS]

00:27:14   likes of which we have seen before in [TS]

00:27:16   Star Wars to rebel control room and in [TS]

00:27:19   it there is a a guy off to the off to [TS]

00:27:23   the left and who's looking for Eastern [TS]

00:27:25   and in the center it is a it is somebody [TS]

00:27:28   we've seen before it's it's a Mon Mothma [TS]

00:27:30   the the sort of what would you say she [TS]

00:27:34   is she the the the leader of the [TS]

00:27:37   rebellion the official leader of the [TS]

00:27:38   rebellion [TS]

00:27:39   well she's at one point a senator I [TS]

00:27:41   believe although i think yeah that [TS]

00:27:43   depends again how much not throwing out [TS]

00:27:45   clearly i think i think at this point [TS]

00:27:47   like I mean it discretionary star wars [TS]

00:27:49   the rebellion is a secret and informal [TS]

00:27:51   thing you know it's old you are part of [TS]

00:27:53   the Rebel Alliance and traders if they [TS]

00:27:54   don't declare themselves hi I'm part of [TS]

00:27:56   the rebels like you know the idea is [TS]

00:27:57   there are forming a rebellion gonna have [TS]

00:28:00   letterhead right that says rebel long [TS]

00:28:02   line on it right so who is part of their [TS]

00:28:04   buying powerful important people in the [TS]

00:28:06   galaxy who are against the the growing [TS]

00:28:09   Empire but they're not declaring [TS]

00:28:11   themselves i feel like these people have [TS]

00:28:12   like day jobs but you know behind the [TS]

00:28:15   scenes they are constraining this [TS]

00:28:16   rebellion so obviously she is [TS]

00:28:17   I mean I always took her in Star Wars to [TS]

00:28:19   be below princesslay-a I don't know if [TS]

00:28:22   that is officially canonically like rank [TS]

00:28:24   wise she's more [TS]

00:28:25   or whatever but in this movie is [TS]

00:28:28   presented as our hero comes before her [TS]

00:28:30   and as far as she's concerned as far as [TS]

00:28:32   our heroes concerned I this is the [TS]

00:28:34   person in charge is all lit up to get [TS]

00:28:36   spotlights on earth and we're addressing [TS]

00:28:38   or whatever she is the face of authority [TS]

00:28:40   right and whether there's any thought of [TS]

00:28:44   people above that are who the heck you [TS]

00:28:46   know Han Solo Skywalker are going to be [TS]

00:28:48   or what Princess Leia is or what she's [TS]

00:28:50   doing is totally beyond the concern of [TS]

00:28:53   you know this person just marching your [TS]

00:28:55   handcuffs far as she's concerned she's [TS]

00:28:57   talking to the person in charge [TS]

00:28:58   no I mean I be honestly had always had [TS]

00:29:00   the opposite thought from jamas I assume [TS]

00:29:03   mama was the sort of top head of the [TS]

00:29:06   sort of nominal like head of state [TS]

00:29:08   yeah sort of an end eventually was [TS]

00:29:10   basically in charge of things and [TS]

00:29:11   Princess Leia well high-ranking was not [TS]

00:29:13   necessarily you know like i said she was [TS]

00:29:15   sorry like in an outright because she [TS]

00:29:17   was definitely maintaining our role in [TS]

00:29:18   the center at least up until a new hope [TS]

00:29:20   but she sort of acts as a as a high [TS]

00:29:23   level operative in some way so I agree [TS]

00:29:25   that is definitely I mean it's she's [TS]

00:29:28   definitely in charge is interesting [TS]

00:29:29   because we have a weird link here which [TS]

00:29:31   is that this character of course first [TS]

00:29:33   appeared in return the Jedi in a pretty [TS]

00:29:35   much just one scene and then appears [TS]

00:29:39   briefly i think in the final cut of the [TS]

00:29:41   episode 3 appears briefly but has [TS]

00:29:44   deleted scenes in which they she [TS]

00:29:45   actually has lines and they're using the [TS]

00:29:47   same actress from the prequels which [TS]

00:29:49   might be one of the first times that one [TS]

00:29:50   of the new films is drawing sort of a [TS]

00:29:52   direct line to the prequels was very [TS]

00:29:56   clever because she looks a lot like the [TS]

00:29:57   original actress [TS]

00:29:58   yeah I had to add that moment like wait [TS]

00:30:00   a second is that did they do cg things I [TS]

00:30:03   placement wet like it's just you know [TS]

00:30:05   because all you eat the thing is you [TS]

00:30:06   don't when you see the next shot they [TS]

00:30:07   don't actually look that much like but [TS]

00:30:09   you you see the uniform you don't see [TS]

00:30:11   the person especially the range of the [TS]

00:30:13   during the shot broad broad strokes you [TS]

00:30:15   know I think me like there are some [TS]

00:30:16   broad strokes there that they could pass [TS]

00:30:17   for similar enough if you don't remember [TS]

00:30:19   exactly what it was like look like but [TS]

00:30:20   this is an irish actor named Genevieve [TS]

00:30:22   O'Reilly who's been in a bunch of things [TS]

00:30:24   including i was thinking i started [TS]

00:30:27   spooks the british show and in episodes [TS]

00:30:31   the Showtime comedy she plays a part in [TS]

00:30:33   there too so but she looked i think she [TS]

00:30:36   is a dead ringer here and it is [TS]

00:30:38   they decided to go with the prequels [TS]

00:30:39   actors but i guess they felt like we [TS]

00:30:41   already cast that part 1 yeah we already [TS]

00:30:43   did the search for someone who looks [TS]

00:30:45   just like this and yeah that's her let's [TS]

00:30:47   just go with that and that that person [TS]

00:30:49   just needs to be a little bit older and [TS]

00:30:50   guess what they are because yeah [TS]

00:30:52   convenient time has passed since the [TS]

00:30:54   prequels so here we are [TS]

00:30:56   felicity jones is broad before mon [TS]

00:31:00   mothma and this this dude and then [TS]

00:31:03   there's also another another guy who [TS]

00:31:05   looks roguish and is lit in sort of a [TS]

00:31:09   green light from the tactical display [TS]

00:31:11   and he's off in the corner so you can [TS]

00:31:13   tell that that that guy's gonna be you [TS]

00:31:15   might be wrote to you see you see his [TS]

00:31:17   little is little badge that the little [TS]

00:31:19   rank badges the one the one you always [TS]

00:31:20   remember from the new hope it looks like [TS]

00:31:22   the period of dog food symbol like with [TS]

00:31:23   the 525 read things right [TS]

00:31:26   this guy just got to to greendot so [TS]

00:31:27   obviously he's not as high ranking as [TS]

00:31:30   the molecular tenant or something is [TS]

00:31:31   that Diego Luna it is diego luna yeah so [TS]

00:31:34   I I i assume that the the story this is [TS]

00:31:37   the story right which is all right we [TS]

00:31:39   called you in here you've got a mission [TS]

00:31:41   you're gonna work with this guy looks [TS]

00:31:44   like he's that kind of these are [TS]

00:31:46   official guy right like he's are these [TS]

00:31:48   are legitimate like guy that we send [TS]

00:31:49   into these things that you have a very [TS]

00:31:51   specific you have a very specific set of [TS]

00:31:53   skills that we need one thing about [TS]

00:31:55   these two characters which I i had [TS]

00:31:57   tweeted about my got a pretty big [TS]

00:31:58   response which was this this you trailer [TS]

00:32:01   opens with two characters both women [TS]

00:32:04   talking about something not related to a [TS]

00:32:07   guy which means this trailer already [TS]

00:32:09   like 20 seconds in passes the Bechdel [TS]

00:32:11   test which may set it aside from almost [TS]

00:32:16   every other star wars movies at least up [TS]

00:32:18   to force awakens certainly so that [TS]

00:32:21   despite the fact that i do think you [TS]

00:32:22   know when they first released a cast [TS]

00:32:24   photo [TS]

00:32:24   despite having a very diverse cast they [TS]

00:32:26   did have still a predominantly male at [TS]

00:32:28   least 80 characters we were shown so [TS]

00:32:31   there are at least multiple multiple [TS]

00:32:34   women in here with lines with scenes [TS]

00:32:36   together which I think continues along [TS]

00:32:40   the sort of trajectory we've seen from [TS]

00:32:41   the new Star Wars laid out for us which [TS]

00:32:45   is this is really going to be about like [TS]

00:32:47   all sorts of different characters right [TS]

00:32:49   not just [TS]

00:32:50   our prototypical white male here heroes [TS]

00:32:54   so that's I think that's really cool i [TS]

00:32:56   mean i-i something like she's going to [TS]

00:32:58   be overwhelmed in the movie kind of like [TS]

00:33:00   Ray was for the most part of that like [TS]

00:33:02   you're still going to be in universe [TS]

00:33:03   mostly surrounded by men to a degree [TS]

00:33:06   that is not particularly a [TS]

00:33:07   representative of the world at large but [TS]

00:33:09   they're you know they're making progress [TS]

00:33:11   is what you have to say is that they are [TS]

00:33:12   taking steps in the right direction I [TS]

00:33:14   mean you know the the optimistic outcome [TS]

00:33:17   as you do this a bunch of times when [TS]

00:33:18   people start complaining about the [TS]

00:33:19   stereotypical white female heroine and [TS]

00:33:21   so all right that's progress [TS]

00:33:22   next we're on to the next you know [TS]

00:33:23   stereotype now it's like like turning a [TS]

00:33:26   Star Destroyer you have to do a it's [TS]

00:33:28   very slow once you start moving it but [TS]

00:33:30   it takes a while to turn all the way [TS]

00:33:31   around but the most important thing the [TS]

00:33:33   most important thing is like you can't [TS]

00:33:34   go into this in like oh and you know [TS]

00:33:36   we're going to make a bunch of movies [TS]

00:33:37   going to make one every year and they're [TS]

00:33:38   probably gonna be like diversity them in [TS]

00:33:40   the beginning I was just doing [TS]

00:33:41   traditional it's what I think it's [TS]

00:33:42   really important to come out of the gate [TS]

00:33:43   with two movies with with the female [TS]

00:33:46   lead [TS]

00:33:47   even if there are pretty conventional [TS]

00:33:48   and almost every other way like i said i [TS]

00:33:50   really think that you know that cast [TS]

00:33:52   photo is representative and she's gonna [TS]

00:33:53   be running around this movie's most of [TS]

00:33:55   the people surrounding her aren't are [TS]

00:33:57   going to be men right and maybe slightly [TS]

00:34:00   more diverse meant but to have the 2 12 [TS]

00:34:02   punch of the force awakens and this one [TS]

00:34:04   sends a signal that it's not like oh [TS]

00:34:06   this is something we're going to do in [TS]

00:34:08   the future going forward when we have [TS]

00:34:09   the opportunities like we're doing it [TS]

00:34:10   now this is this is you know it's not [TS]

00:34:12   it's not gonna it's not something that [TS]

00:34:14   we aspire to [TS]

00:34:15   right yeah it is a priority and and so [TS]

00:34:17   much so that they're taking the movies [TS]

00:34:18   out the movie is the movie is on her [TS]

00:34:21   shoulders right that's the whole movie [TS]

00:34:23   there are some challenges with that also [TS]

00:34:25   just basic again once again if we're [TS]

00:34:27   reading this in a period right like you [TS]

00:34:29   know all the for example you take the [TS]

00:34:31   Empire right like how many women did you [TS]

00:34:33   see the Empire in the original movies [TS]

00:34:35   and half the stormtroopers just couldn't [TS]

00:34:37   tell ya [TS]

00:34:38   arioso like that's what you gotta do is [TS]

00:34:39   to like that's basically it wasn't until [TS]

00:34:42   you know force awakens that we had [TS]

00:34:43   definitive like female stormtrooper so i [TS]

00:34:46   think i'm sure again there's an uphill [TS]

00:34:48   climb to like having representing that [TS]

00:34:51   when you know you've it's weird because [TS]

00:34:53   you feel like you're adhering to a [TS]

00:34:55   period like but at the same time like [TS]

00:34:56   it's a fictional period like yeah this [TS]

00:34:59   is history of things that never happen [TS]

00:35:01   so really it could have been whatever [TS]

00:35:02   the hell you want it to be mmm [TS]

00:35:03   because they can still play that up as [TS]

00:35:05   in like even if they want to go with [TS]

00:35:06   like all right so most of most of the [TS]

00:35:08   rebel fighters are men and most of the [TS]

00:35:10   Empire's men that's why we need a woman [TS]

00:35:12   to be the one to infiltrate and get this [TS]

00:35:13   point I mean you get this lot of [TS]

00:35:14   different angles you can take on and I [TS]

00:35:16   think there's no problem with [TS]

00:35:17   plausibility at all understand like from [TS]

00:35:18   the from the entertainment making [TS]

00:35:20   perspective that the disney is sending a [TS]

00:35:22   message and being smart you know money [TS]

00:35:24   wise because like I just I just think [TS]

00:35:28   it's it's a it's a good move and it's [TS]

00:35:30   easy to like I said look at this and say [TS]

00:35:32   alright well its progress but and i [TS]

00:35:36   totally agree with all the butts but I'm [TS]

00:35:37   just I'm exhilarated by the fact that [TS]

00:35:39   things are moving forward [TS]

00:35:40   you know I mean like and in a way that [TS]

00:35:42   like you know I enjoyed the star trek [TS]

00:35:44   movies and we had complaints about star [TS]

00:35:46   trek through this that's a silly scenes [TS]

00:35:48   but wasn't that into darkness the silly [TS]

00:35:52   scenes where they have people stripped [TS]

00:35:53   down and everything and I like those [TS]

00:35:55   movies and I thought they were good but [TS]

00:35:56   they were constrained by the cast and [TS]

00:35:59   they didn't like regenerate things which [TS]

00:36:01   they could have and be i didn't realize [TS]

00:36:02   how much how much more interesting they [TS]

00:36:05   would have been to me have a gender swap [TS]

00:36:07   the bunch of people are done something [TS]

00:36:08   more creative until I got to see these [TS]

00:36:10   movies and have a fresh look as we spent [TS]

00:36:12   our whole lives seeing movies where all [TS]

00:36:14   this is a bunch of men doing things that [TS]

00:36:16   if women don't even exist and it's [TS]

00:36:18   exhilarating to see something different [TS]

00:36:20   yep agreed this is also as we move to [TS]

00:36:23   the next scene in that previous see what [TS]

00:36:25   we get is mon mothma saying a list of [TS]

00:36:29   all the crimes that Felicity Jones [TS]

00:36:31   character has committed essentially [TS]

00:36:33   which is funny and then her response [TS]

00:36:36   comes over the next scene so we see her [TS]

00:36:38   in wearing like something on her head [TS]

00:36:41   and and in a in what looks like a it [TS]

00:36:46   somewhere else there's a robot behind [TS]

00:36:48   her droid sorry robot appears and in a [TS]

00:36:51   bunch of this trailer and could you do [TS]

00:36:53   that what happens to be there in the [TS]

00:36:54   scene or that could be that robot is [TS]

00:36:56   like the companion robot for their [TS]

00:36:59   ragtag group at allmovie i will give you [TS]

00:37:01   even money both it's that and it's allen [TS]

00:37:04   and alan tudyk who is also a robot and I [TS]

00:37:06   robots oh yeah I think that's probably a [TS]

00:37:09   motion capturing the anyway so she but [TS]

00:37:11   then what we see her is beating the crap [TS]

00:37:14   out of a whole bunch of stormtroopers [TS]

00:37:17   the with a stick and with a blaster and [TS]

00:37:21   she ends up like firing and be causing [TS]

00:37:23   an explosion that hurls and she just [TS]

00:37:26   doesn't cause that explosion she is the [TS]

00:37:27   victim of that explosion explosions [TS]

00:37:29   being sent off remotely by someone [TS]

00:37:30   holding something and she you know [TS]

00:37:32   through the frame it wasn't weird hot [TS]

00:37:34   secretary also we see we see her [TS]

00:37:36   we see her fire oh you're right we see a [TS]

00:37:38   fire her gun but then we cut and you can [TS]

00:37:40   actually see there's somebody above [TS]

00:37:42   who's got three different scenes who is [TS]

00:37:44   committed to making in the triggering [TS]

00:37:46   you think it's connected well i think [TS]

00:37:47   that i think those are in the same [TS]

00:37:48   location right but yeah and you see look [TS]

00:37:51   after the explosion goes off she is [TS]

00:37:52   diving to the ground with our friend [TS]

00:37:54   with the the two there are [TS]

00:37:55   scruffy-looking french guiana be the [TS]

00:37:57   opening scene with the two things and [TS]

00:37:58   take cover you know it's typical trailer [TS]

00:38:01   stuff for you you know you can you can [TS]

00:38:02   make it look like that's one scene [TS]

00:38:03   because people don't notice it but [TS]

00:38:04   anyway yeah it's the this is the part [TS]

00:38:07   where they show action [TS]

00:38:09   here's some action going on yes or some [TS]

00:38:11   sort of rumors flying through the air [TS]

00:38:13   you gotta like that right and she's and [TS]

00:38:14   she's beating the crap out of [TS]

00:38:15   Stormtroopers to that's also what we get [TS]

00:38:17   here so she's she's tough she's got a [TS]

00:38:19   gun she's got chicken fight with a stick [TS]

00:38:22   she's got lots of different ways to beat [TS]

00:38:24   on stormtroopers and then there's [TS]

00:38:25   somebody who blows up a bunch of [TS]

00:38:26   stormtroopers and rebellion after all [TS]

00:38:29   this is a rebellion after all and just [TS]

00:38:32   after opening and she says in the next [TS]

00:38:34   in the next scene we are back with her [TS]

00:38:37   and and in the rebel base and and she [TS]

00:38:40   says I repeal that is that is who this [TS]

00:38:43   character is which is a pretty good [TS]

00:38:46   pretty great and mon mothma sort of has [TS]

00:38:48   a knowing a knowing smile and looks down [TS]

00:38:51   yeah it's like when you don't want to [TS]

00:38:52   humor your kid like your kids something [TS]

00:38:54   funny but it's not really funny you [TS]

00:38:55   don't want to like laugh to encourage [TS]

00:38:57   them but it actually is kind of funny [TS]

00:38:58   she's supposed to be Stern and say [TS]

00:39:00   you've broken all these laws and are [TS]

00:39:02   disobedient and are you know Here I your [TS]

00:39:05   rebel never hear you know and and but [TS]

00:39:08   really she kind of admirers the guests [TS]

00:39:12   over here all all [TS]

00:39:14   yeah all communicated with a nice smile [TS]

00:39:16   and you know that's that's why the scene [TS]

00:39:18   is in the trailer because that's what [TS]

00:39:19   you want to have their uh let's see so [TS]

00:39:22   so our next shot [TS]

00:39:23   she is she's riding on a spaceship it [TS]

00:39:27   looks like looking out the window we get [TS]

00:39:28   some lens flare [TS]

00:39:30   could be a vehicle could be that was [TS]

00:39:32   probably flying going to every up [TS]

00:39:33   against something at the lens flare in [TS]

00:39:35   there you know I and then the next shot [TS]

00:39:38   and this is again over over there [TS]

00:39:40   voiceover about a weapons weapons test [TS]

00:39:44   that's happening and that they needed to [TS]

00:39:45   get the details and we get a Star [TS]

00:39:47   Destroyer with a shadow moving across [TS]

00:39:51   the surface of the death star as it [TS]

00:39:54   turns out on top in the background and [TS]

00:39:56   we get to see that they're lowering the [TS]

00:39:59   the the cone of the weapon into the [TS]

00:40:04   Death Star superlaser some assembly [TS]

00:40:06   required [TS]

00:40:07   yeah well I because you know like John [TS]

00:40:09   setup from we're talking about the [TS]

00:40:11   models of it it's like you know we all [TS]

00:40:13   know that the star was like a big model [TS]

00:40:14   right like and so it was so in some ways [TS]

00:40:17   so interesting in the inside the Jedi [TS]

00:40:19   one had to deal with the unfinished [TS]

00:40:20   estar now here it's unfinished but it's [TS]

00:40:23   like in a much further along stage of [TS]

00:40:25   construction but there still is like you [TS]

00:40:27   had to have giant ships like putting [TS]

00:40:29   these last things in the place right [TS]

00:40:30   like you're building space which is [TS]

00:40:31   great but you know what [TS]

00:40:34   it still requires some work so we get [TS]

00:40:37   the impression it's not quite finished [TS]

00:40:38   but it's pretty close to finish it [TS]

00:40:40   sounds like the arm on the space shuttle [TS]

00:40:41   a subcontractor that out to the space [TS]

00:40:43   Canadians and I just delivered and [TS]

00:40:44   installed it that same thing with the [TS]

00:40:45   death star also got tricked his face [TS]

00:40:47   Canadians somebody said that the gesture [TS]

00:40:49   is unibody construction you know so they [TS]

00:40:51   they built they build the whole big [TS]

00:40:53   thing and then they and then make [TS]

00:40:54   because it has the curve you want the [TS]

00:40:56   curve to match and then they have to cut [TS]

00:40:59   out with where they do this every [TS]

00:41:00   contractor yeah is building the the [TS]

00:41:03   firing mechanism the barrel of a gun or [TS]

00:41:05   whatever it is they do a nice job [TS]

00:41:07   showing the scale by having the start of [TS]

00:41:09   stories hanging out around that look so [TS]

00:41:10   puny yeah yeah it's beautiful and that [TS]

00:41:13   that's a nice revisitation of the thing [TS]

00:41:15   we know we all know well from Star Wars [TS]

00:41:17   right and so much harder to do I think [TS]

00:41:19   right when they have the original model [TS]

00:41:21   works right here than I've been are [TS]

00:41:22   going to make started story scare models [TS]

00:41:24   next to the desktop model because it [TS]

00:41:25   would be like you know like a centimeter [TS]

00:41:27   large and it wouldn't read on camera and [TS]

00:41:30   you know but with exactly magically cgi [TS]

00:41:32   you can do all that we get the guy the [TS]

00:41:34   guy the guy who's been hanging out to [TS]

00:41:36   the left to is obviously a a military [TS]

00:41:39   leader of some sort of way they are [TS]

00:41:41   general or whatever in the rebellion [TS]

00:41:44   we couldn't get we couldn't get our [TS]

00:41:45   general Dodonna probably because I'm [TS]

00:41:47   sure that guys did and to anything [TS]

00:41:49   stirring he's scolding her and saying [TS]

00:41:51   this is actually a serious mission we [TS]

00:41:53   really need to know this you know [TS]

00:41:54   whatever instructions he's just given [TS]

00:41:56   her he wants to make sure she takes it [TS]

00:41:58   seriously and is gonna do one queued up [TS]

00:42:01   some some hours yeah because there's [TS]

00:42:04   alarms it's very it's very exciting [TS]

00:42:06   so there's a long and glorious history [TS]

00:42:07   of a klaxon zand trailers the ones that [TS]

00:42:11   come to mind immediately to me and most [TS]

00:42:14   recent memory was the Prometheus trailer [TS]

00:42:16   which leaned heavily on the sirens are [TS]

00:42:19   klaxons repeatedly going throughout the [TS]

00:42:21   in more intense part of the trailer [TS]

00:42:24   what else have you got someone posted [TS]

00:42:26   the alien trailer which had a little bit [TS]

00:42:27   of that going on in it which one's my [TS]

00:42:31   forgetting their farther back than that [TS]

00:42:32   Prometheus it's it's a very common thing [TS]

00:42:35   that the modern travelers structure is [TS]

00:42:37   you know gentle intro rising action big [TS]

00:42:40   dramatic lots of things happening and [TS]

00:42:41   then smooth out at the end and this one [TS]

00:42:43   going with the the siren theme [TS]

00:42:45   interestingly i think the sirens are [TS]

00:42:47   they sound different big don't sound all [TS]

00:42:50   I don't think I was inception much they [TS]

00:42:52   weren't really sirens but so much for [TS]

00:42:53   getting the big bong you know based on [TS]

00:42:55   these sirens I don't know if they sound [TS]

00:42:58   star wars but they definitely don't [TS]

00:42:59   sound like the other sirens that I've [TS]

00:43:02   heard in protecting the areas Star Wars [TS]

00:43:04   sirens they're the they're used in the [TS]

00:43:06   Death Star in the original I I know if [TS]

00:43:09   that's what they're going for I feel [TS]

00:43:10   like they haven't matched it could just [TS]

00:43:11   be again take if you take that sound out [TS]

00:43:13   of the original context that sounds [TS]

00:43:14   weird kind of like the jet taking that [TS]

00:43:16   the lines from look at of Jedi and they [TS]

00:43:17   sound weird you know I think that's a [TS]

00:43:19   part of it i think the other part of it [TS]

00:43:21   is that they they were something we [TS]

00:43:23   heard very much in the background and so [TS]

00:43:25   therefore grounded yeah i mean [TS]

00:43:27   presumably if they just pull the exact [TS]

00:43:29   sound effects Brent you know Ben birds [TS]

00:43:31   got them all and some board somewhere [TS]

00:43:33   that could be them but at but if that's [TS]

00:43:35   where they're going for they just sounds [TS]

00:43:36   so different out of context especially [TS]

00:43:37   you know get behind it is not playing [TS]

00:43:39   the john williams music you don't hear [TS]

00:43:40   the footsteps of people going through [TS]

00:43:41   the star they are pretty well isolated [TS]

00:43:44   and then they just continue for the for [TS]

00:43:47   the action portion of this trailer we [TS]

00:43:49   are now joined by serenity caldwell who [TS]

00:43:50   has made it home [TS]

00:43:51   hi finally hello where we're we're uh a [TS]

00:43:56   full visibility [TS]

00:43:57   going home in it you're gonna have [TS]

00:44:00   gotten into the klaxon that's okay yeah [TS]

00:44:02   yeah so so there's plenty of time for [TS]

00:44:04   you to jump in here as we go [TS]

00:44:08   yeah so we got to the klaxons and then [TS]

00:44:11   we there's a whole bunch of like x-wing [TS]

00:44:13   pilots and felicity jones and diego luna [TS]

00:44:17   and a donk droid they're all hot walking [TS]

00:44:19   off to the left to the left the dr fly [TS]

00:44:22   plane and this one because that'd be [TS]

00:44:23   great but it's his dream you look at [TS]

00:44:25   them they're looking at also more [TS]

00:44:26   employees like this is gonna be my [TS]

00:44:28   chance this time for sure is there is a [TS]

00:44:30   1x1 left for me but he walk so slowly [TS]

00:44:32   that in three strides there always a [TS]

00:44:35   past him and he just taking his little [TS]

00:44:36   steps there's a whole anthology film [TS]

00:44:39   just dedicated solely to that contract [TS]

00:44:42   on chronic where the gun control schools [TS]

00:44:44   you know we didn't see an astromech so [TS]

00:44:46   so I guess you know we have to have one [TS]

00:44:49   little droid side get it right there is [TS]

00:44:50   there is a did I said canister drawing [TS]

00:44:53   because I referred to them identified [TS]

00:44:55   there was a random cleaner r 5g for [TS]

00:44:58   starters right I are having a far-right [TS]

00:45:00   wing is that when the rebels and [TS]

00:45:02   handcuffed yeah exactly [TS]

00:45:03   and there's one on the left to the [TS]

00:45:05   silver one on the left huh right also a [TS]

00:45:08   canister John and aftermarket huh i sir [TS]

00:45:12   alright done up right though going to [TS]

00:45:14   someone upright actually warming up [TS]

00:45:17   right i classify all my robot vacuum all [TS]

00:45:19   you might not a ball right now or a [TS]

00:45:22   mouse droid so they're they're headed [TS]

00:45:24   off to war i guess uh and then and then [TS]

00:45:27   we give a shot mysterious shot of a a [TS]

00:45:30   sort of it's almost like his graduation [TS]

00:45:34   photo he sorta posed a standing there [TS]

00:45:37   like a Macallan to me it looks very in [TS]

00:45:39   mcallen hands across the name maybe he's [TS]

00:45:41   got a little of staff or something like [TS]

00:45:43   that a little bit he's got a cape [TS]

00:45:45   it's a it's a it's a it's a Imperial [TS]

00:45:49   Admiral Grand Admiral something like [TS]

00:45:51   that he's in white so he's not the [TS]

00:45:52   coloring that we expect from these you [TS]

00:45:54   need for as it was EU then that would [TS]

00:45:57   signify Grand Admiral but again we toss [TS]

00:45:59   about that he's also standing in front [TS]

00:46:01   of the display in the death star that [TS]

00:46:03   target is standing in front of you [TS]

00:46:05   turning into you know [TS]

00:46:07   yeah the trapezoidal one yeah yeah what [TS]

00:46:10   does he hold what is that what is on his [TS]

00:46:11   e holding a gun [TS]

00:46:13   what is it silver thing look like it was [TS]

00:46:15   like a swagger stick or something [TS]

00:46:16   yeah I thought it was maybe a like some [TS]

00:46:18   sort of a affectations like a stick a [TS]

00:46:22   stick or something but I don't know i'm [TS]

00:46:25   holding a stick i have a mental space [TS]

00:46:27   stick it looks like magneto it looks [TS]

00:46:30   like a Macallan playing a might need [TS]

00:46:33   always got the Cape he's got the look i [TS]

00:46:35   know the actors i could look like that [TS]

00:46:36   when you see what it looks like anything [TS]

00:46:37   but this pose just maybe think about it [TS]

00:46:39   it's a good pose [TS]

00:46:40   nice shot ya Habibi oh yes it's very [TS]

00:46:42   it's very eerie i mean obviously we [TS]

00:46:47   don't know too much about where the [TS]

00:46:49   settings of this movie you're going but [TS]

00:46:51   I appreciate that as we sort of get into [TS]

00:46:53   Imperial shot starting in about the 52nd [TS]

00:46:56   mark things go from very grungy and very [TS]

00:46:58   lived-in to we've we've got the [TS]

00:47:00   isolationist very clean very crisp look [TS]

00:47:04   all of the rebels are in browns and [TS]

00:47:07   grays and then you have a murder shot of [TS]

00:47:09   creme [TS]

00:47:09   yeah i mean even even mon mothma is in [TS]

00:47:12   kind of an off-white right she's not [TS]

00:47:14   even in true she's in kind of like this [TS]

00:47:16   billowy off wait no spiritual was a very [TS]

00:47:20   seven yeah yeah yeah so very very [TS]

00:47:22   seventies but then you get to you know [TS]

00:47:25   if you get this beautiful super super [TS]

00:47:30   white keep ya super keep yeah he's in a [TS]

00:47:34   space Nazi look [TS]

00:47:36   yeah I respect got a big space Marianne [TS]

00:47:38   goes very and thereby boy I don't care [TS]

00:47:41   about the the cleaning budget either the [TS]

00:47:43   laundry budget I is another like [TS]

00:47:45   speaking of budget is another place [TS]

00:47:46   where the seventies budget of Star Wars [TS]

00:47:47   comes and we just mentioned before the [TS]

00:47:48   the purina rebel signal so you know [TS]

00:47:51   things right so they had yet so they had [TS]

00:47:53   to come up with a way to show a rank [TS]

00:47:56   insignia of them you know whatever it's [TS]

00:47:58   gonna be the more of these you have the [TS]

00:47:59   higher your rank is right and then Sigma [TS]

00:48:02   things are like it's like a plate of [TS]

00:48:04   metal with colored raised squares [TS]

00:48:06   because I mean you don't like luck with [TS]

00:48:09   this alcohol thing we're going to spend [TS]

00:48:10   our money on the original star wars in [TS]

00:48:12   1970 whatever we're not going to spend [TS]

00:48:14   we don't have a kind of budget to have [TS]

00:48:16   someone come up with 17 designs where [TS]

00:48:17   there is significant look like [TS]

00:48:18   and manufacturing characters like know [TS]

00:48:20   that have the prop Department a piece of [TS]

00:48:22   metal color thing and then now some [TS]

00:48:23   here's later [TS]

00:48:24   that's officially what the insignias [TS]

00:48:26   look like so like well you gotta do that [TS]

00:48:28   because that's what they look like stars [TS]

00:48:29   and it's such a it's such a strange look [TS]

00:48:31   born of low-budget but now it's like now [TS]

00:48:33   just that star wars it actually doesn't [TS]

00:48:35   even make any sense lady I think I was a [TS]

00:48:37   kid you know I tried to go through and [TS]

00:48:39   like figure out what they actually met [TS]

00:48:40   it like you are comparing them and it's [TS]

00:48:42   like this actually doesn't make any [TS]

00:48:44   sense people are all over the place with [TS]

00:48:45   the number of things of these other jobs [TS]

00:48:47   no it'sit's um although to an untrained [TS]

00:48:50   eye a lot of military rank insignia and [TS]

00:48:53   metals and things like that or computer [TS]

00:48:55   the mentalist look like as well exactly [TS]

00:48:57   and and and now having having learned a [TS]

00:49:00   little bit about that a lot of the stuff [TS]

00:49:02   that's on your front lapel in the Army [TS]

00:49:04   not your rank or your insignia so right [TS]

00:49:07   maybe something entirely different maybe [TS]

00:49:09   like decorations maybe number of times [TS]

00:49:11   that you've successfully managed to fire [TS]

00:49:13   your weapon a target maybe just hold [TS]

00:49:15   your gum you know if you get hungry and [TS]

00:49:17   you know John these are extra strength [TS]

00:49:19   liqui-gels they are you just pop them [TS]

00:49:21   out and take them and urology Tsar fine [TS]

00:49:24   for a while if you find yourself in the [TS]

00:49:25   matrix you can have the red pillow the [TS]

00:49:27   blue coat right there on your lapel [TS]

00:49:29   that's right to take this um ok so we [TS]

00:49:32   cut cut back and then we're in a scene [TS]

00:49:35   again I think this might be the same [TS]

00:49:37   scene i'm not sure but it's more classic [TS]

00:49:39   stormtroopers and and like a there were [TS]

00:49:43   some of them are riding on like a tank [TS]

00:49:45   and not so classic vehicle classic [TS]

00:49:47   stormtroopers although the guys in the [TS]

00:49:49   tank are not classic stormtroopers right [TS]

00:49:51   they've got something else going on with [TS]

00:49:53   their armor they've got like blast [TS]

00:49:55   shield yeah they mix up the classic [TS]

00:49:58   stormtroopers are there and then there's [TS]

00:49:59   other varieties of Stormtroopers which [TS]

00:50:02   are not the force awakens stormtroopers [TS]

00:50:04   and not the clone wars stormtroopers but [TS]

00:50:06   other varieties and presumably they are [TS]

00:50:08   yet another very slick in the [TS]

00:50:10   Stormtrooper fashion world you have to [TS]

00:50:12   have different outfits for doing my [TS]

00:50:14   house because you got the snow troopers [TS]

00:50:16   you get the forest troopers and then you [TS]

00:50:18   had to hurt variance because the force [TS]

00:50:19   awakens snow troopers don't look like [TS]

00:50:20   this no troopers from empire and so [TS]

00:50:22   these are like desert dirt grime Street [TS]

00:50:25   star wars rebels setting I mean it's an [TS]

00:50:27   absolutely it's got a little [TS]

00:50:29   follow me yeah I didn't they could be a [TS]

00:50:31   little bit of clone wars carryover type [TS]

00:50:32   thing but that I think that's how you [TS]

00:50:34   excuse like hey we're all these [TS]

00:50:35   stormtroopers in New Hope why why were [TS]

00:50:37   they here and not there it's like well [TS]

00:50:39   the New Hope took place [TS]

00:50:40   I mean maybe they should have been [TS]

00:50:41   tattooing if this is supposed to be like [TS]

00:50:43   another desert planet but all the ones [TS]

00:50:44   on the Death Star were all of a piece [TS]

00:50:46   because it's not like you have snow or [TS]

00:50:48   ice or whatever there's just like the [TS]

00:50:49   indoor the generals you know general use [TS]

00:50:52   stormtrooper outright but but i think [TS]

00:50:55   the only use those stormtroopers in this [TS]

00:50:57   movie you would be less visually [TS]

00:50:58   interesting so I think they they are [TS]

00:51:00   enjoying the ability to both have the [TS]

00:51:02   classic stormtroopers with their classic [TS]

00:51:04   guns and maybe a little bit fancier guns [TS]

00:51:05   but also new vehicles and new stories [TS]

00:51:08   maybe it's like maybe that's the local [TS]

00:51:09   help right there is the Imperials and [TS]

00:51:11   there's also like some local government [TS]

00:51:13   on whatever planet there on ya Forest [TS]

00:51:16   Whitaker is next [TS]

00:51:18   looking like a he he's alive he's beat [TS]

00:51:21   up he's got like he's wearing this thing [TS]

00:51:23   that's got a bunch of stuff on it and [TS]

00:51:25   he's got that little like he's got like [TS]

00:51:26   darth vader's breathing harmonica thing [TS]

00:51:28   write down exactly fun like he like he [TS]

00:51:31   just took off from his uh his own little [TS]

00:51:34   Darth Vader mask and is a wandering up [TS]

00:51:36   to talk to us [TS]

00:51:37   there's a subsequent shot at some point [TS]

00:51:38   of something that looks kind of like a [TS]

00:51:40   stormtrooper with black armor i wonder [TS]

00:51:42   if this might be him with his helmet on [TS]

00:51:44   but i didn't i didn't spend the time [TS]

00:51:45   free streaming through it so i was [TS]

00:51:47   curious to know if that it is that might [TS]

00:51:49   be him or not it just looks like a black [TS]

00:51:51   storm trooper looking at that shot okay [TS]

00:51:54   it's a little bit different than the [TS]

00:51:55   block somebody if you look at his [TS]

00:51:56   shoulder pads is a different it's a [TS]

00:51:57   different outlet very least whether it's [TS]

00:51:59   a minute yeah I thought you might be [TS]

00:52:00   more like a bounty hunter or something [TS]

00:52:02   it's hard to tell me definitely he has [TS]

00:52:04   that vibe he's definitely seen some [TS]

00:52:07   stuff he's got fans say on his chest [TS]

00:52:10   walking stick [TS]

00:52:11   he's angry about things he is [TS]

00:52:13   check-check bounty hunter check [TS]

00:52:16   yep he's got a scar on his face yep [TS]

00:52:19   welcome back to him now we've got a shot [TS]

00:52:22   that that's really quick with easily the [TS]

00:52:24   very definitely the black stormtrooper [TS]

00:52:26   outfit different kind of helmet [TS]

00:52:29   there's a there's a fire going on the [TS]

00:52:31   background with one of those little to [TS]

00:52:32   sort of towers like we usually see in [TS]

00:52:34   the residents havin [TS]

00:52:36   this is a fisherman friend antenna can't [TS]

00:52:39   yeah looks like it looks kinda like the [TS]

00:52:40   moisture vaporators from Tatooine a [TS]

00:52:42   little bit it's just you know it's very [TS]

00:52:44   green there's lots of green line but [TS]

00:52:46   there's something going on there where [TS]

00:52:48   it sits very Star Wars either right when [TS]

00:52:50   you see one because one of the force [TS]

00:52:51   awakens to where you're like oh yeah [TS]

00:52:53   Star Wars architecture got where they've [TS]

00:52:54   taken it from from the moisture farm [TS]

00:52:57   basically and like used it as a motif of [TS]

00:52:59   like this is the kind of thing we do in [TS]

00:53:01   Star Wars so it's in the background on [TS]

00:53:04   fire apparently or the thing behind it [TS]

00:53:06   is on fire and their these super [TS]

00:53:08   menacing stormtroopers we haven't seen [TS]

00:53:09   before looking around black stormtrooper [TS]

00:53:11   armor is the new white yes doesn't show [TS]

00:53:14   the dirt as much you know when you're on [TS]

00:53:15   these dirty planets really it's more [TS]

00:53:17   sensible that way when I got a big it's [TS]

00:53:20   got a big like thing on the on the [TS]

00:53:24   bottom part of the face like it's got a [TS]

00:53:25   gas mask or something like that it maybe [TS]

00:53:28   not so good for the hot climates though [TS]

00:53:29   so yeah and then what [TS]

00:53:31   like yeah I'm assuming this i mean the [TS]

00:53:33   point of the green so it's probably not [TS]

00:53:34   tattooing but like what planet are there [TS]

00:53:36   maybe this could be 70 different [TS]

00:53:37   settings but like this the explosion [TS]

00:53:39   this her beating up the stormtroopers it [TS]

00:53:41   looks like kind of sandy dirt on the [TS]

00:53:42   ground right there not cobblestone [TS]

00:53:44   streets [TS]

00:53:45   it almost looks tropical and we've got [TS]

00:53:47   especially a tropical stuff later right [TS]

00:53:49   yeah we've got yacht on trees or later [TS]

00:53:52   yep the shot that immediately succeeds [TS]

00:53:55   this with with the locked rebel pilots [TS]

00:53:58   and handcuffs being escorted through a [TS]

00:54:00   busy market yes [TS]

00:54:01   this makes me think that they're [TS]

00:54:03   definitely aiming again it goes with the [TS]

00:54:05   the rebels in real life I feel it looks [TS]

00:54:09   a lot like how they've been portraying [TS]

00:54:11   love fall and I don't think it's less [TS]

00:54:13   all but i think they want you to get the [TS]

00:54:15   same kind of vibe for people who are [TS]

00:54:17   hooked into the stuff that's happening [TS]

00:54:19   with Star Wars rebels they have said [TS]

00:54:21   that like the stuff that's happening [TS]

00:54:22   with Star Wars rebels is Canada does [TS]

00:54:23   affect the the larger sphere i like the [TS]

00:54:26   idea of showing other outer rim planets [TS]

00:54:28   that may also may not be lush tropical [TS]

00:54:31   you know Greenland's because not all not [TS]

00:54:35   all habitable planets are going to look [TS]

00:54:37   nice [TS]

00:54:38   there's probably going to be a lot of [TS]

00:54:39   desert planets because there's you know [TS]

00:54:41   maybe if you think about the logistics [TS]

00:54:43   of habitable worlds and how not a ton of [TS]

00:54:47   habitable world [TS]

00:54:48   out there have you know perfect lush [TS]

00:54:50   oceans and and tons of greenery and it [TS]

00:54:53   makes sense that that there are a lot of [TS]

00:54:55   worlds look like this and also who gets [TS]

00:54:57   to live on those world [TS]

00:54:58   yeah yeah that's not the prime real [TS]

00:55:00   estate in the galaxy really not so much [TS]

00:55:02   but secretly I hope it's with all we [TS]

00:55:05   have to start over with the arm shoulder [TS]

00:55:06   pad just as that scene fades out like [TS]

00:55:08   the traditional and a new hope you know [TS]

00:55:09   we have to get the black shoulder bread [TS]

00:55:11   the forehand operations but every once [TS]

00:55:12   in a while you go you see ones like they [TS]

00:55:14   pulled like I right out of New Hope [TS]

00:55:15   literally that guy's super disorder is [TS]

00:55:17   ryan still now so running through here [TS]

00:55:22   here's a rod again again here's our dirt [TS]

00:55:24   become a robot he does he's not a [TS]

00:55:26   recognizable droid I suppose he's a [TS]

00:55:27   droid kisses a robot in Star Wars but [TS]

00:55:29   he's he's a little he's not something [TS]

00:55:31   we've seen before these humanoid-looking [TS]

00:55:33   yeah and they're finished slender girl [TS]

00:55:36   is it is that an IG unit no no it's not [TS]

00:55:40   wrong wrong body I think he's big and [TS]

00:55:43   and roboti and we haven't seen before [TS]

00:55:46   and they're running down a corridor and [TS]

00:55:49   there are stormtroopers running perhaps [TS]

00:55:53   a down the same corridor on the other [TS]

00:55:55   side we don't know but there's two [TS]

00:55:56   different story different location [TS]

00:55:58   I honestly think it's a different [TS]

00:55:59   location and that they're just messing [TS]

00:56:01   that they're just intercutting the two [TS]

00:56:02   the two sets right yeah because they're [TS]

00:56:04   both indoors and they're both indoors [TS]

00:56:06   and slightly gray well the light the [TS]

00:56:08   lights may be the same on the ceiling [TS]

00:56:10   there but again this is this is approved [TS]

00:56:12   level analysis that we're doing here but [TS]

00:56:14   the most rollerblading they're working [TS]

00:56:16   out [TS]

00:56:17   most relevant thing is that we have two [TS]

00:56:19   different sets of Stormtroopers again on [TS]

00:56:21   the ground starts you're running here so [TS]

00:56:23   these are the whatever these are hand [TS]

00:56:25   tan Stormtroopers they come in all the [TS]

00:56:27   colors now [TS]

00:56:28   yeah and shout out to to Canary Wharf [TS]

00:56:31   station which is the first shot of them [TS]

00:56:33   running through what was that England [TS]

00:56:35   yeah that's carrying that's just that's [TS]

00:56:37   just a underground station [TS]

00:56:39   yep mmm been underground station dressed [TS]

00:56:42   up to look like Star Wars yes [TS]

00:56:43   cool just gonna have some red lights and [TS]

00:56:46   put a little bit of a CG crossover [TS]

00:56:48   things and yeah make a make the ground [TS]

00:56:53   look a little bit different you don't [TS]

00:56:54   know about these beige stormtroopers [TS]

00:56:56   like a the idea that it's the Imperial [TS]

00:57:00   Stormtroopers plus the local [TS]

00:57:01   this'll make some sense but these [TS]

00:57:03   totally looks like stormtroopers like [TS]

00:57:04   what climber you four are you for like I [TS]

00:57:07   don't know like swampy desert keep the [TS]

00:57:11   varieties of Stormtroopers because it [TS]

00:57:13   was the white carpet is so clearly like [TS]

00:57:14   they like they really are the indoor cat [TS]

00:57:16   of the star wars universe is so nice and [TS]

00:57:18   clean their they're perfect for if [TS]

00:57:20   you're running around the death star [TS]

00:57:21   that's those are your guys but everyone [TS]

00:57:23   else like they have to be you know [TS]

00:57:25   different you can be running around on [TS]

00:57:27   Endor you're not gonna want to be all [TS]

00:57:28   white like that do you want to eat you [TS]

00:57:30   alive it's better to be a little bit [TS]

00:57:32   camouflage that's like the snow troopers [TS]

00:57:34   is already are camouflaged anyway these [TS]

00:57:36   beige guys definitely look kind of like [TS]

00:57:38   they want to blend in with some scenery [TS]

00:57:40   maybe they are the tropical island one [TS]

00:57:42   maybe so [TS]

00:57:43   and then we see we've got another guy [TS]

00:57:48   with a kind of guy with a stick [TS]

00:57:50   perfect guy was just a nice light say [TS]

00:57:53   this is donnie and i believe yes I'm who [TS]

00:57:56   you may know from hero with jet li and [TS]

00:57:59   he is a he's been a bunch of [TS]

00:58:02   international arts movies and he is [TS]

00:58:05   using his staff to again whack the hell [TS]

00:58:08   out of a bunch of Stormtroopers there's [TS]

00:58:10   a downed x-wing in the background of [TS]

00:58:12   that [TS]

00:58:12   yeah and again the city like not a lot [TS]

00:58:14   of trees brown dirt on the ground [TS]

00:58:17   what kind of crumbling the white [TS]

00:58:19   stormtrooper standout in this [TS]

00:58:21   environment in the same way they stood [TS]

00:58:22   out in Mos Eisley because they are shiny [TS]

00:58:24   and for the most part clean and [TS]

00:58:26   threatening in this sort of dirty [TS]

00:58:28   tumbledown world but not shiny and [TS]

00:58:30   chrome now that comes later i was using [TS]

00:58:34   I felt like donnie yen seen felt like a [TS]

00:58:36   little bit of like this does I you to [TS]

00:58:38   ichi the blind swordsman it kind of [TS]

00:58:40   feels like he's using it like almost [TS]

00:58:42   like a you know a blind person using a [TS]

00:58:44   cane and then he just beats the crap at [TS]

00:58:46   all them so wasn't entirely sure what's [TS]

00:58:48   going on there but it seems like an [TS]

00:58:50   interesting dynamic [TS]

00:58:51   yeah very curious so I'll sound carries [TS]

00:58:56   cut to got stormtroopers firing and this [TS]

00:58:58   is we are very clearly at this point in [TS]

00:59:00   a tropical setting there are palm trees [TS]

00:59:02   everywhere there is what looks like a [TS]

00:59:05   while there's a spacecraft with the four [TS]

00:59:10   wings like a big Imperial shuttle like [TS]

00:59:13   an irrational car [TS]

00:59:14   go thing yeah looks like kylo Ren [TS]

00:59:16   shuttle yeah that's exactly what I [TS]

00:59:18   thought when I thought I think it might [TS]

00:59:19   be a radar dish you if your idea you [TS]

00:59:22   refreeze find that one and run back as [TS]

00:59:24   like it doesn't look like its mobile [TS]

00:59:25   necessarily but it does bear a lot of [TS]

00:59:27   resemblance to the kylo Ren ship [TS]

00:59:28   well but it does move because it blows [TS]

00:59:30   up in our lying so we get we get some [TS]

00:59:36   nice trailer explosions and then the [TS]

00:59:38   next shot [TS]

00:59:38   speaking of i mentioned earlier the DA [TS]

00:59:41   Grand Admiral and the Imperial laundry [TS]

00:59:44   budget [TS]

00:59:45   here's the thing about having Apes [TS]

00:59:46   here's the thing about if you wear a [TS]

00:59:48   cape [TS]

00:59:48   if you wear a cape and then you walk [TS]

00:59:50   along the beach your keeps going to get [TS]

00:59:51   wet and that's what happens here this [TS]

00:59:53   one floats gracefully across the water [TS]

00:59:56   yeah but it's still wet Stilwell but [TS]

00:59:58   it's like that it's got that thing where [TS]

00:59:59   the water [TS]

00:59:59   the water [TS]

01:00:00   speeds up like user table cloth so good [TS]

01:00:02   around let's get a little over a little [TS]

01:00:03   simonized little a little water perfect [TS]

01:00:05   they're nice [TS]

01:00:06   Jason no capes no capes I agree but this [TS]

01:00:09   guy he doesn't care he has a nice blood [TS]

01:00:11   in the back it's very stylish it's it [TS]

01:00:14   this is a very chilling scene especially [TS]

01:00:16   medications the first time around but [TS]

01:00:19   going through on subsequent viewings the [TS]

01:00:21   dead stormtroopers just lying and that [TS]

01:00:23   shallow water and you've got a bunch of [TS]

01:00:26   the dead white stormtroopers you got a [TS]

01:00:27   bunch of what looked like black [TS]

01:00:29   stormtrooper black stormtrooper armor or [TS]

01:00:32   it might be rebels with burning what [TS]

01:00:35   looks like burning x-wings as well as [TS]

01:00:38   potentially burning whatever we saw [TS]

01:00:40   explode [TS]

01:00:41   earlier you know against the sea of palm [TS]

01:00:43   trees like this is a beautiful shot to [TS]

01:00:45   contrast that with the very next shot [TS]

01:00:47   which is also if somebody completely [TS]

01:00:49   direct center center screen which maybe [TS]

01:00:53   Palpatine Vader one of the one of the [TS]

01:00:58   above surat flanked by Imperial Guard [TS]

01:01:00   this looks like it's somebody who would [TS]

01:01:02   have some sort of connection to I want [TS]

01:01:04   me my initial thought was some sort of [TS]

01:01:06   connection to the system because it's [TS]

01:01:07   somebody in a black robe who is kneeling [TS]

01:01:09   yeah and because there kneeling in front [TS]

01:01:11   of whatever this cylinder is it's got [TS]

01:01:14   steamed up from hologram ugh i thought i [TS]

01:01:16   thought it was gonna be like the [TS]

01:01:18   holographic like okay you know [TS]

01:01:19   communication unit that we see in sort [TS]

01:01:21   of empire but I it's hard to tell right [TS]

01:01:23   because there isn't anything directly [TS]

01:01:24   there right now but I don't know it [TS]

01:01:26   seems awfully solid little carbon for [TS]

01:01:29   his chamber from like Empire exist like [TS]

01:01:31   it's got the little the tubes hanging [TS]

01:01:33   down that you know get sliced during the [TS]

01:01:35   Empire fight and you a lot of smoke and [TS]

01:01:37   yet this to like nodules but yeah I [TS]

01:01:39   don't I can't get a read on what this [TS]

01:01:40   light cylinder is because all of the [TS]

01:01:42   other things you just disgust have more [TS]

01:01:44   or less canonical forms in this error of [TS]

01:01:46   the star wars universe that we we know [TS]

01:01:48   what the Holograms look like there's no [TS]

01:01:50   this looks more like a star wars [TS]

01:01:51   transporter like what you don't need to [TS]

01:01:53   have a big white cylinder light to do [TS]

01:01:55   hollow communications because those are [TS]

01:01:57   blue and interlaced because that's how [TS]

01:01:58   they look in this phase of the star wars [TS]

01:02:00   universe and they don't really have [TS]

01:02:03   transporters and it doesn't actually [TS]

01:02:05   look like carbon-freezing is [TS]

01:02:06   carbon-freezing doesn't involve a giant [TS]

01:02:07   whites on their life [TS]

01:02:08   so what the hell is it yeah but the key [TS]

01:02:10   clue here is that we've got two of the [TS]

01:02:12   the Red imperial garden so this is [TS]

01:02:15   something to do with the Emperor like [TS]

01:02:18   those guys only show up when the Emperor [TS]

01:02:19   is involved in some way i suppose they [TS]

01:02:21   could show up when Vader is involved in [TS]

01:02:22   some way because this thing makes me [TS]

01:02:24   question how high we are going to go up [TS]

01:02:25   the evil org chart in this movie is [TS]

01:02:28   there going to be a scene where one of [TS]

01:02:30   the fairly big beds talk to his boss and [TS]

01:02:33   his boss Vader or mrs. Bostock activator [TS]

01:02:35   or is this actually they were talking to [TS]

01:02:37   the Emperor like do we need to see those [TS]

01:02:38   people all it doesn't look like they're [TS]

01:02:40   to me and stature wise i know it's hard [TS]

01:02:42   to tell but like he's got the wrong [TS]

01:02:44   outfit for their he doesn't look at the [TS]

01:02:46   right height and width proportions he [TS]

01:02:48   doesn't walk like Vader so I'm thinking [TS]

01:02:50   it's not very but who knows like you [TS]

01:02:52   have a cape is wrong it's not it's not [TS]

01:02:54   the right clothes I mean you would have [TS]

01:02:55   to be like better in disguise and it was [TS]

01:02:57   the Emperor he doesn't again same thing [TS]

01:02:59   as a waiter in disguise is like a [TS]

01:03:01   slightly different form of Darth Vader [TS]

01:03:03   is like Vader but he wears a different [TS]

01:03:04   you know cloak over his I know doesn't [TS]

01:03:06   make any sense now are you don't either [TS]

01:03:08   no you're right i just sound like James [TS]

01:03:12   Earl Jones a lot of people have that [TS]

01:03:13   voice what you've got another close-up [TS]

01:03:16   of of our of our pal forest whitaker [TS]

01:03:20   various but yeah he's got a lot of [TS]

01:03:23   equipment around his neck [TS]

01:03:24   that's why so angry all the time very [TS]

01:03:27   gray and an orange looking place its it [TS]

01:03:30   almost looks like the falken interior [TS]

01:03:33   but I think they're probably inside one [TS]

01:03:36   of those dwellings where we see Felicity [TS]

01:03:38   Jones hanging out earlier you know very [TS]

01:03:41   very very quick shot and then cut you [TS]

01:03:44   more explosions yes I'm more explosions [TS]

01:03:47   and the guy running a running out of an [TS]

01:03:50   explosion with a with a gun and then and [TS]

01:03:55   then we get the were in the sort of like [TS]

01:03:58   on the beach in and they're the palm [TS]

01:04:00   trees and there are a whole bunch of [TS]

01:04:02   Imperial Walker's shooting down at [TS]

01:04:06   people including it looks like including [TS]

01:04:07   Felicity Jones running across yes [TS]

01:04:10   yeah I don't know [TS]

01:04:10   energy chance and her scruffy friend [TS]

01:04:13   yeah and I guess our friends there too [TS]

01:04:14   many graphic it doesn't so this is this [TS]

01:04:16   is totally a classic Star Wars movie [TS]

01:04:20   because the first Star Wars movie you [TS]

01:04:21   had Luke in the desert and all but [TS]

01:04:23   desert hot and water and then they go [TS]

01:04:25   into space in a fight and then an empire [TS]

01:04:28   you follow up with like remember the [TS]

01:04:29   desert movie star resolved by desert how [TS]

01:04:31   about freezing cold about white freezing [TS]

01:04:33   cold the exact opposite of desert and we [TS]

01:04:35   have ads alright we go to do the [TS]

01:04:37   callback remember and that's white [TS]

01:04:38   freezing cold [TS]

01:04:39   how do you feel about ads in the tropics [TS]

01:04:41   is either get there they're paying back [TS]

01:04:44   and forth from the how extreme creamy [TS]

01:04:46   the only way they could have gotten more [TS]

01:04:47   extreme that some space which for make [TS]

01:04:48   no sense but it would be funny to those [TS]

01:04:50   legs are just playing around they just [TS]

01:04:51   kicked my leg kick their little legs and [TS]

01:04:53   not we can see and that's flown in and [TS]

01:04:56   Star Wars rebels on a carrier which is [TS]

01:04:59   kind of crazy but I i love the return of [TS]

01:05:02   the edits it looks it looks so good that [TS]

01:05:05   the fact that we've got depth of field [TS]

01:05:08   here and you see sort of the the adults [TS]

01:05:11   in the distance in there I obscured by [TS]

01:05:14   hayes you've got that giant that giant [TS]

01:05:17   signal dish standing up next so you get [TS]

01:05:20   a sense of scale and especially being [TS]

01:05:22   down with felicity jones and the [TS]

01:05:24   presumably the rest of the rebels you [TS]

01:05:26   really get a sense even more so i think [TS]

01:05:29   that an empire of just how massive the [TS]

01:05:32   adults are in comparison to humans when [TS]

01:05:34   and how questions ripped they are right [TS]

01:05:36   like and you have a big problem because [TS]

01:05:38   you look you have gone seven stories of [TS]

01:05:41   angry and you're running around in the [TS]

01:05:43   sand i love the big splashes from my [TS]

01:05:45   feet again nothing you couldn't do you [TS]

01:05:46   know with the stop motion and snow you [TS]

01:05:48   can get but here it's like we're [TS]

01:05:49   computers guess one that takes a step [TS]

01:05:51   makes a big splash and then yeah they're [TS]

01:05:53   on their own big trouble here there's we [TS]

01:05:55   discussed earlier with like the fact [TS]

01:05:57   that these are you know because of the [TS]

01:05:59   cg in the capabilities that we have [TS]

01:06:00   there at these are better versions of [TS]

01:06:02   our memory right like right the additive [TS]

01:06:04   you back and look you know their little [TS]

01:06:06   clunky Wright because you're like you're [TS]

01:06:07   doing stop much so they're going to have [TS]

01:06:08   certain restrictions but because we can [TS]

01:06:11   do cg sort of see more stuff like were [TS]

01:06:13   mimicking the imperfections as John was [TS]

01:06:15   saying earlier with the budget [TS]

01:06:16   constraints right like where we're [TS]

01:06:17   trying to evoke those imperfections [TS]

01:06:18   because those are what made them stand [TS]

01:06:21   out in our memory [TS]

01:06:22   in many ways so even though we can do [TS]

01:06:23   perfect you know like note-perfect a [TS]

01:06:26   dats that would like not have any of the [TS]

01:06:28   problems or imperfections are weird like [TS]

01:06:30   you know rough edges that we would get [TS]

01:06:33   from a model like we have to sort of do [TS]

01:06:36   things in perfectly [TS]

01:06:38   yeah they're like that the clunky gate [TS]

01:06:39   their legs have to move a kind of a [TS]

01:06:41   herky-jerky slow like that they move so [TS]

01:06:43   slowly you can't have these things like [TS]

01:06:44   galloping across the business you know [TS]

01:06:46   they couldn't do that with the model so [TS]

01:06:47   the models had to move a little bit slow [TS]

01:06:49   down and these ones have to move exactly [TS]

01:06:50   the same i only the sharper and love [TS]

01:06:53   training this is before the rebels have [TS]

01:06:55   discovered tow cables you don't have [TS]

01:06:57   this resolved someone could run around [TS]

01:06:58   them with a piece of string [TS]

01:06:59   yeah I wanted to say that one of the [TS]

01:07:01   things that's great about having cgi [TS]

01:07:02   these of these things is in some ways [TS]

01:07:05   it's the there the insult incidental use [TS]

01:07:08   use in the background of these things [TS]

01:07:09   you get the sense that you know we see [TS]

01:07:11   like 45 of them here but they're in the [TS]

01:07:14   background in different locations at [TS]

01:07:16   different distances pointed in different [TS]

01:07:18   directions so you get some scale like oh [TS]

01:07:20   there are a lot of them and they're all [TS]

01:07:21   firing at people and they're all doing [TS]

01:07:23   this at once and in Empire you know [TS]

01:07:26   because of the cost and because of the [TS]

01:07:30   complexity you know what you would see [TS]

01:07:32   of them would be really limited because [TS]

01:07:34   it had they had to keep it simple and [TS]

01:07:36   then you use your imagination to fill in [TS]

01:07:38   the gaps and here you just get this [TS]

01:07:40   moment of like oh my god there are mock [TS]

01:07:42   many walkers all doing different things [TS]

01:07:45   some of them are close that we really [TS]

01:07:47   need to walk out for but there's also [TS]

01:07:48   that one way back there and it's doing [TS]

01:07:49   something to that's pretty cool that's a [TS]

01:07:51   really nice advantage of having modern [TS]

01:07:54   film technology for this stuff [TS]

01:07:56   agreed it's a it's fun to see that [TS]

01:08:00   they're scary and they put a Fire's [TS]

01:08:02   right by the camera and then the last [TS]

01:08:04   shot is Felicity Jones again and it [TS]

01:08:07   lights up and we're looks like we're in [TS]

01:08:09   a very death story kind of location and [TS]

01:08:11   she's wearing a Death Star uniform [TS]

01:08:14   basically and it's yellow black and [TS]

01:08:17   shiny and that's the last shot of the [TS]

01:08:20   trailer was it death star uniform or was [TS]

01:08:22   it a tie fighter yeah it's an imperial [TS]

01:08:26   it's kind of its kind of weird because [TS]

01:08:27   it has on the back with almost look like [TS]

01:08:29   steak like short swords but like they're [TS]

01:08:31   not write like that but they are sort of [TS]

01:08:33   like a weird industrial-looking thing [TS]

01:08:35   shiny black metal thing you know one [TS]

01:08:38   thing in the front important is the big [TS]

01:08:39   the big you know Empire you know this [TS]

01:08:42   insignia on her honestly hold previous [TS]

01:08:45   part of the movie we had seen as being a [TS]

01:08:46   rebel she's one of the rebels who is [TS]

01:08:48   dressed in red the rebel kind of way [TS]

01:08:49   which is dirty brown clothes and she's [TS]

01:08:52   running around beating up the shiny [TS]

01:08:53   stormtroopers and here she's at the end [TS]

01:08:55   and like the voice-over is like if you [TS]

01:08:57   do this well what will you become blah [TS]

01:09:00   blah and what they're trying to tease [TS]

01:09:01   that she could go over to the rebels or [TS]

01:09:04   whatever because if permission is to go [TS]

01:09:06   and infiltrate and steel surely at some [TS]

01:09:08   point during the infiltrating she'll [TS]

01:09:10   address you know you're not going to get [TS]

01:09:11   the desktop plans out of the start that [TS]

01:09:13   is indeed where they're held without [TS]

01:09:15   disguising yourself as part of the [TS]

01:09:17   Empire and I assumed it had to do with [TS]

01:09:19   drawing I mean I guess kind of what it [TS]

01:09:20   took for that voiceover is like it's [TS]

01:09:22   about drawing lines right it's about [TS]

01:09:23   like you know the sort of classic hero [TS]

01:09:26   trope of will you sink to the level of [TS]

01:09:29   your enemies will you become your [TS]

01:09:30   enemies [TS]

01:09:31   you know I i took it is more [TS]

01:09:32   metaphorical than necessarily literal [TS]

01:09:34   that she is going to like oh maybe this [TS]

01:09:36   is about her turning into a villain or [TS]

01:09:38   something I i don't think i don't know [TS]

01:09:40   if you're ready for that in a Star Wars [TS]

01:09:41   movie yes we had like the whole Anakin [TS]

01:09:43   Skywalker goes bad for three movies and [TS]

01:09:45   really hits with always he's really [TS]

01:09:47   angry is really something i don't know [TS]

01:09:49   he's a spatula [TS]

01:09:50   but you know we all knew that was coming [TS]

01:09:53   ahead of time right and so I'm not sure [TS]

01:09:54   we're ready for like a movie where we're [TS]

01:09:56   supposed to sympathize with his [TS]

01:09:57   character who then it turns out to be [TS]

01:09:59   evil or something that doesn't strike me [TS]

01:10:01   as the kind of us it seems like a nun [TS]

01:10:03   Star Wars story for the rest of [TS]

01:10:05   everything else that's been set up here [TS]

01:10:06   which is that this is very much like a [TS]

01:10:08   on a mission movie right like this is [TS]

01:10:10   you know someone who might have some [TS]

01:10:12   questionable methods you know more of a [TS]

01:10:15   han Solo than Luke Skywalker but i don't [TS]

01:10:18   think that I don't know it seems a [TS]

01:10:20   little 224 shadowy in a weird way for me [TS]

01:10:24   so i will float one idea which is I I've [TS]

01:10:29   heard sort of banter downed and is Curie [TS]

01:10:32   curiosity making for me is that I think [TS]

01:10:36   it's very much i'm on a mission movie [TS]

01:10:38   but there's nothing to say that there [TS]

01:10:40   are casualties in the on the mission [TS]

01:10:42   movies there's nothing to say that she [TS]

01:10:46   doesn't somehow get entrapped in the [TS]

01:10:49   empire when i watch this my first [TS]

01:10:52   thought is was basically oh they are [TS]

01:10:55   taking all of the seeds that Mara Jade [TS]

01:10:59   style characters dropped in the EU and [TS]

01:11:02   they're putting it into a much more [TS]

01:11:03   beneficial use I and it's it maybe oh [TS]

01:11:07   well this may go for a dark place where [TS]

01:11:09   we doing this in an anthology film but [TS]

01:11:12   there's also the possibility what if [TS]

01:11:15   this character has connections to other [TS]

01:11:17   characters in non anthology films how [TS]

01:11:20   how might that connect and wouldn't it [TS]

01:11:23   be interesting if this character does [TS]

01:11:26   have a history with the Empire I didn't [TS]

01:11:28   understand a lot of what you said there [TS]

01:11:29   because i don't know what the deal is [TS]

01:11:31   with Mara Jade in the EU so if you even [TS]

01:11:34   if you could and I imagine a lot of [TS]

01:11:36   other people don't either can expand [TS]

01:11:38   upon that I just I don't know we I don't [TS]

01:11:40   get the reference so sorry Mara Jade [TS]

01:11:42   Mara Jade in the EU I was a basically [TS]

01:11:46   one of the one of the premier badass [TS]

01:11:48   lady characters for sensitive but not [TS]

01:11:52   super Jedi ends up being is a smuggler [TS]

01:11:56   for many years also ends up working [TS]

01:11:58   directly for Palpatine essentially is a [TS]

01:12:00   as a not quite a Jedi not quite a bounty [TS]

01:12:04   hunter bieber's hand yeah yeah exactly [TS]

01:12:07   as they you say something like that the [TS]

01:12:09   Emperor's handed people who probably [TS]

01:12:10   haven't read the EU books are like I [TS]

01:12:12   don't even know what that means i get [TS]

01:12:14   from continuity lost his hand [TS]

01:12:16   yeah she goes around doing the Empire [TS]

01:12:18   the Emperor's dirty work and I don't [TS]

01:12:20   think that jen is supposed to be as a [TS]

01:12:22   stand-in for firmar Jade I she's very [TS]

01:12:26   much your own character but i wouldn't [TS]

01:12:28   be surprised if they dip into some of [TS]

01:12:30   her backstory to to build this character [TS]

01:12:33   because it they have a wealth of it and [TS]

01:12:35   mara jade was hugely beloved character [TS]

01:12:37   but I'm but less less so much of like [TS]

01:12:40   again an exact 121 ideal of and more [TS]

01:12:45   hey if we have you know this the strong [TS]

01:12:48   female character who might have some [TS]

01:12:51   tinges of gray and gareth edwards has [TS]

01:12:53   already described this movie is very [TS]

01:12:54   gray the the theory that I've heard [TS]

01:12:57   popping round is what if this is Ray's [TS]

01:12:59   mother or what if this is someone in in [TS]

01:13:01   some way related [TS]

01:13:02   did to the main anthology films who does [TS]

01:13:05   either go not necessarily go dark but [TS]

01:13:07   this is a way i don't know if this is [TS]

01:13:11   just crazy out-of-left-field it might be [TS]

01:13:12   but if this ends up being a a turn to [TS]

01:13:16   the dark side whether force or not is [TS]

01:13:19   involved [TS]

01:13:20   this might be a way to reach to tell the [TS]

01:13:23   story they actually wanted to tell with [TS]

01:13:25   episode 3 but do it in a more nuanced an [TS]

01:13:28   interesting way like someone's someone's [TS]

01:13:30   fall from greater dark in and with a [TS]

01:13:34   character that we don't quite have so [TS]

01:13:36   much capital H history / but who may [TS]

01:13:40   become relevant in this secondary [TS]

01:13:42   trilogy no idea is that it may be way [TS]

01:13:45   out of left field but that's like having [TS]

01:13:47   watch this trailer multiple times I I [TS]

01:13:50   get the I get a kind of very off-putting [TS]

01:13:53   feeling from it if they try to do that [TS]

01:13:55   and have have her father are I would [TS]

01:13:58   want to see her in more movies like I [TS]

01:14:00   wouldn't want this yeah the only movie [TS]

01:14:02   that she's in but if you're gonna see [TS]

01:14:03   her in more movies like they're not [TS]

01:14:05   starting a parallel saga these anthology [TS]

01:14:08   always are supposed to be like one of [TS]

01:14:10   those and one of these and they're in [TS]

01:14:12   the universe and so I have trouble [TS]

01:14:14   believing that they're going to start [TS]

01:14:15   down that path [TS]

01:14:16   I mean just do they do another spin-off [TS]

01:14:18   series and be like oh now that was this [TS]

01:14:20   is the gym story like i don't think you [TS]

01:14:22   can get that all out in a single movie [TS]

01:14:24   where you introduce the character and [TS]

01:14:25   bring them along that entire rpi think [TS]

01:14:27   all you can do it in and a single heist [TS]

01:14:29   movie is have her be like have the the [TS]

01:14:32   darkness be uh you're going to do your [TS]

01:14:35   mission at all costs what do you [TS]

01:14:37   consider all costs like do you you know [TS]

01:14:39   the good-guy thing is always some member [TS]

01:14:41   of your of your ragtag crew gets injured [TS]

01:14:43   like everything is about saving them and [TS]

01:14:45   she could be ruthless and saying you [TS]

01:14:47   know the mission is what's important you [TS]

01:14:49   know I have to go on I have to sacrifice [TS]

01:14:50   you I'll do whatever it takes to get the [TS]

01:14:52   mission done and that's the like are you [TS]

01:14:54   becoming like your enemy what will you [TS]

01:14:55   do to get this mission and how important [TS]

01:14:56   is this how ruthless will you be [TS]

01:14:58   is that why you were chosen for this [TS]

01:14:59   mission because you were the most [TS]

01:15:00   ruthless person who is who won't be [TS]

01:15:03   sentimental you know that because which [TS]

01:15:06   is staring into the camera that i have [TS]

01:15:07   seen she just she looks pretty ruthless [TS]

01:15:09   like she's not like I'm hiding them in [TS]

01:15:11   disguise she looks ruthless yeah i agree [TS]

01:15:14   with you John and I kind of hope that [TS]

01:15:15   they don't that's [TS]

01:15:16   really go down the array route if only [TS]

01:15:18   because I feel like I mean if someone is [TS]

01:15:21   on record for also hoping that she's not [TS]

01:15:23   like Luke Skywalker's daughter or [TS]

01:15:25   whatever it again what we talked about a [TS]

01:15:27   friend a little bit was like this is a [TS]

01:15:29   gigantic universe and yes there are some [TS]

01:15:31   like mythological forces at play that [TS]

01:15:32   tend to bring these same families or [TS]

01:15:35   characters into confluence once and [TS]

01:15:37   again but I feel like if you are doing [TS]

01:15:39   an anthology and you are telling these [TS]

01:15:41   different star war stories in some ways [TS]

01:15:43   if you have you to acknowledge like yeah [TS]

01:15:46   look there's other things going on in [TS]

01:15:48   this universe with other people who are [TS]

01:15:49   not you know not this is not just the [TS]

01:15:51   story of the sky walker family or you [TS]

01:15:54   know the related people this is the [TS]

01:15:56   story of a gigantic universal with [TS]

01:15:58   people and for conflict and all these [TS]

01:15:59   different players in this game and so in [TS]

01:16:03   some ways achievements it for me if it's [TS]

01:16:04   directly related to all those things [TS]

01:16:06   that said I mean you know hey if that's [TS]

01:16:07   the way they go that and they can do it [TS]

01:16:09   well that's another thing entirely but [TS]

01:16:10   I'm kind of intrigued to see since we [TS]

01:16:13   have a Star Wars movie that's not [TS]

01:16:14   directly crew like connected to the rest [TS]

01:16:16   of the saga like what does that look [TS]

01:16:18   like what does it look like we're not [TS]

01:16:19   necessarily you know telling this huge [TS]

01:16:22   big story that's about like good and [TS]

01:16:25   evil white and dark in the most literal [TS]

01:16:27   terms but rather perhaps in more the [TS]

01:16:29   subtextual ways where everybody is [TS]

01:16:32   related to each other and everybody [TS]

01:16:33   somebody's cousin a nephew or whatever [TS]

01:16:35   it like i was saying before we started [TS]

01:16:36   recording when I showed this trailer to [TS]

01:16:38   my kids my daughter and I explained like [TS]

01:16:40   where this fits timewise in the saga [TS]

01:16:42   everything my daughter's first question [TS]

01:16:44   was so where is she and newhope right [TS]

01:16:47   because it makes sense that this [TS]

01:16:48   supposed to be right before a new hope [TS]

01:16:49   and she's the important person in this [TS]

01:16:51   movie where why do I not see here in a [TS]

01:16:53   new upgrade you know just it and it is a [TS]

01:16:55   sensible question a sensible answer she [TS]

01:16:57   dies in this movie filling her mission [TS]

01:16:59   or something else or she turns better [TS]

01:17:01   you know like the practical answer is [TS]

01:17:02   obvious but the the story in universe [TS]

01:17:05   explaining it to a young child answer is [TS]

01:17:06   like well what yep [TS]

01:17:07   where is she and over she's super [TS]

01:17:09   important she did a good job for the [TS]

01:17:10   rebels she retire having done hermitian [TS]

01:17:14   well and just you know hang out on the [TS]

01:17:16   beach without the ads for rent for the [TS]

01:17:18   duration of the other three movies does [TS]

01:17:20   she go bad and has to be deleted [TS]

01:17:22   you know like yeah so that these these [TS]

01:17:24   are all good questions I am I really [TS]

01:17:26   think like it does depend on [TS]

01:17:27   these movies go to the fifties anthology [TS]

01:17:29   movies with the exception of one beer [TS]

01:17:30   like I'm gonna tell boba fett story or [TS]

01:17:31   whatever like we know what his deal is [TS]

01:17:33   but for these anthology movies that tell [TS]

01:17:35   new stories I feel like especially [TS]

01:17:37   because i don't have no idea what the [TS]

01:17:39   plan is after episode 9 any one of these [TS]

01:17:41   anthology movies can be blessed I feel [TS]

01:17:44   like based on audience reaction and how [TS]

01:17:46   good the movie is and how much more they [TS]

01:17:49   think there is held to say alright we're [TS]

01:17:51   going to do another trilogy and it's [TS]

01:17:54   going to be focusing on whatever the [TS]

01:17:55   most popular anthology set of characters [TS]

01:17:58   was right because if you want to tell [TS]

01:18:00   the story about the marriage type story [TS]

01:18:02   that would make a great one but that [TS]

01:18:04   definitely has to be more than one movie [TS]

01:18:06   because that's that's that's like a [TS]

01:18:07   traditional star wars 3 movie arc where [TS]

01:18:10   you go somewhere with it i also I'm i [TS]

01:18:12   want to say this knowing full well that [TS]

01:18:14   we are in the midst of a podcast that [TS]

01:18:15   has spent an hour and 15 minutes already [TS]

01:18:18   analyzing a less than two minutes [TS]

01:18:21   trailer but i would say i think it's [TS]

01:18:25   over thinking a little bit too to ask if [TS]

01:18:27   she's a betraying them at the end I [TS]

01:18:29   think it's very obvious that this is one [TS]

01:18:31   of the things she has to do and the the [TS]

01:18:33   trailer wants to leave us with a little [TS]

01:18:35   worried there but this is this is very [TS]

01:18:37   clearly in my mind her going essentially [TS]

01:18:41   posing as somebody in the Empire to do [TS]

01:18:43   this job and I think the interesting [TS]

01:18:44   thing about where she is in in Star Wars [TS]

01:18:47   and thereafter is one of the things i [TS]

01:18:51   find fascinating about this concept in [TS]

01:18:52   general which is you know everybody [TS]

01:18:54   could die at the end of this right and [TS]

01:18:56   sacrificing themselves in a you know in [TS]

01:18:58   a way that leads to the defeat of the of [TS]

01:19:00   the the Death Star the explosion at the [TS]

01:19:02   death star and I i think that makes that [TS]

01:19:05   really raises the stakes and and it [TS]

01:19:07   could be that you know the reason we [TS]

01:19:09   don't see her in any of the other movies [TS]

01:19:11   is that she doesn't make it out of this [TS]

01:19:12   alive and and you know whether wherever [TS]

01:19:16   she might be and I think that's I think [TS]

01:19:19   that's an interesting thing and they're [TS]

01:19:21   not bound by you know the kind of I [TS]

01:19:23   think what we were talking about there [TS]

01:19:24   is that they're not bound by e this is [TS]

01:19:27   our stories always been like that the [TS]

01:19:29   hero's journey story right like there's [TS]

01:19:30   a template for it it's very like I [TS]

01:19:33   couldn't drive exactly but like there is [TS]

01:19:35   a pattern to it and we're going off-book [TS]

01:19:38   now because we're doing a story that is [TS]

01:19:41   necessarily about that traditional epic [TS]

01:19:43   mythological heroes journey anymore and [TS]

01:19:47   so because i feel like you know in the [TS]

01:19:50   hero's journey where everybody dies at [TS]

01:19:51   the end there's something ghostly [TS]

01:19:52   unsatisfying like that but in a on a [TS]

01:19:54   mission movie that takes place during a [TS]

01:19:56   war yeah [TS]

01:19:57   yes everyone can totally die like that's [TS]

01:19:58   totally think that's not what we've [TS]

01:20:00   grown to expect from Star Wars is like a [TS]

01:20:02   brand and that's what makes it so [TS]

01:20:04   interesting to go off-book in this way [TS]

01:20:06   is can we tell us Star Wars story or a [TS]

01:20:09   story set in the star wars universe [TS]

01:20:10   that's not like a quote on quote Star [TS]

01:20:13   Wars story like what we've come to [TS]

01:20:15   expect that you can do it as long as [TS]

01:20:16   because we know what happens after so [TS]

01:20:18   you can still kill everybody off like [TS]

01:20:19   why don't we go see that movie they you [TS]

01:20:21   know yes you see it in their mission but [TS]

01:20:22   every character cared about you just [TS]

01:20:24   going to end on a scene where someone's [TS]

01:20:26   like you know handing it off to like [TS]

01:20:28   Princess Leia you see from the back or [TS]

01:20:29   something like the idea they bleed into [TS]

01:20:31   like and everyone realizes that because [TS]

01:20:33   they succeeded therefore a new hope [TS]

01:20:35   right and so you have so you can have [TS]

01:20:36   some hopeful note at the end showing how [TS]

01:20:38   their work has made possible the rest of [TS]

01:20:42   the saga and you can't do that if people [TS]

01:20:44   don't know like everything that comes [TS]

01:20:47   after it so I they have a lot of options [TS]

01:20:49   to end this movie in a way that you [TS]

01:20:51   could not end it really was like there [TS]

01:20:53   were no other star wars movie just [TS]

01:20:54   making one movie about it like a a heist [TS]

01:20:57   movie and maybe you can do it like in a [TS]

01:20:58   Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs style [TS]

01:21:01   but like a high school here everybody [TS]

01:21:02   dies at the end is definitely not a star [TS]

01:21:06   wars type thing is not even like a [TS]

01:21:07   typical Hollywood type thing and it's [TS]

01:21:09   very sort of more art house sort of [TS]

01:21:11   nihilistic grim type of stuff but you [TS]

01:21:14   can get you can get away with it here [TS]

01:21:15   now because you know it's going to turn [TS]

01:21:17   out ok yeah i mean i feel like that's [TS]

01:21:20   another card in the this might not you [TS]

01:21:23   know I don't think things are going to [TS]

01:21:24   turn out sunshine and roses because [TS]

01:21:25   you're infiltrating a you know the [TS]

01:21:28   Empire to go steal some plans but I feel [TS]

01:21:32   like it's a it's a good road to [TS]

01:21:34   potential greatness to maybe people you [TS]

01:21:38   know not everybody gets out alive but i [TS]

01:21:40   don't think they're going to introduce [TS]

01:21:42   their how their heroin just to kill her [TS]

01:21:45   I think something's something's [TS]

01:21:46   happening to gym we just don't know what [TS]

01:21:48   I don't think that that shot is telling [TS]

01:21:51   of her final future but it's in [TS]

01:21:55   it's a very interesting way to structure [TS]

01:21:57   the trailer and I i also think that the [TS]

01:22:01   people who are looking at it just [TS]

01:22:03   transparently being like oh well James [TS]

01:22:05   dressed as like katniss everdeen with [TS]

01:22:07   black black sleeves and she's like the [TS]

01:22:10   glowing halo around her so clearly [TS]

01:22:12   they're trying to pull in the the you [TS]

01:22:15   know the hunger games franchise watchers [TS]

01:22:17   and I feel like that's just no [TS]

01:22:20   connection to the hunger gasps come on [TS]

01:22:22   our games don't have don't have [TS]

01:22:23   capsule-shaped lights on the walls a [TS]

01:22:25   star wars we talk about clearly i think [TS]

01:22:28   they just distracted by the fact that [TS]

01:22:29   they see a woman in an action movie in [TS]

01:22:32   the only template they have to go by is [TS]

01:22:33   like has it ever happened before in the [TS]

01:22:35   history of the universe i guess the [TS]

01:22:36   Hunger Games yeah she's a hundred people [TS]

01:22:38   know it that's called like not enough [TS]

01:22:40   data points for you to make any sort of [TS]

01:22:42   oh yeah got it [TS]

01:22:43   it's ridiculous i love that shot though [TS]

01:22:46   it is not as beautiful it's a beautiful [TS]

01:22:48   shot [TS]

01:22:48   it really is I i love it too i love the [TS]

01:22:51   I love the Star Wars you know the bright [TS]

01:22:54   lights and the the white lights and and [TS]

01:22:56   the that blacks and shiny black [TS]

01:22:58   gentleman and a black reflections on the [TS]

01:23:01   shiny parts of the the front of her [TS]

01:23:04   uniform there it's just uh that's that's [TS]

01:23:06   that's a star wars art style that i [TS]

01:23:09   really like this is the reason why you [TS]

01:23:10   have the workmen at Pinewood Studios [TS]

01:23:12   build you like practical sets for these [TS]

01:23:14   things but in this day and age there's [TS]

01:23:16   no reason they could've done that all in [TS]

01:23:17   cg I suppose yet it's like Hollins [TS]

01:23:19   helmet in the force awakens when you did [TS]

01:23:21   the whole scene with that was smoke with [TS]

01:23:22   this with his helmet off and they decide [TS]

01:23:24   later they were like his helmet on and [TS]

01:23:25   they just put a helmet on and nobody [TS]

01:23:27   noticed including me [TS]

01:23:28   so now the other the point where they're [TS]

01:23:29   fooling me and so Mike all bets are off [TS]

01:23:31   either way awesome seen whether it's [TS]

01:23:33   real or not [TS]

01:23:34   oh good good grief so 401 a Star Wars [TS]

01:23:37   story is where is revealed as the title [TS]

01:23:40   at the end of this where we reach the [TS]

01:23:43   end of the trailer so I'm interested to [TS]

01:23:44   know your thoughts of anticipation about [TS]

01:23:47   the movie as well as this title which is [TS]

01:23:50   interesting that it's a Star Wars story [TS]

01:23:52   a little k week a quick point on the [TS]

01:23:55   music [TS]

01:23:55   yes because i always have to bring up [TS]

01:23:57   the music well not at the end here we [TS]

01:23:59   get the we get the two parts of played [TS]

01:24:02   simultaneously in like a piano is at the [TS]

01:24:04   beginning to yeah we so basically we get [TS]

01:24:06   the force theme in a sort of a very slow [TS]

01:24:08   down [TS]

01:24:08   on piano little bit hemline runner key [TS]

01:24:12   yeah and I think that's part of the [TS]

01:24:13   reason you know people were talking on [TS]

01:24:15   twitter about this because I mentioned [TS]

01:24:16   you know so Alexander display that I [TS]

01:24:19   think is the has the enviable task [TS]

01:24:21   following john williams in scoring [TS]

01:24:23   started the first you know standalone [TS]

01:24:24   live action star wars movie which is you [TS]

01:24:27   know a big deal it's unclear whether or [TS]

01:24:30   not he wrote this music trailer music [TS]

01:24:32   often done by other people but people [TS]

01:24:35   were going like well does this cheap and [TS]

01:24:36   it had like the force team done with [TS]

01:24:37   this if this really isn't about like the [TS]

01:24:39   Jedi and Sith or whatever say well we [TS]

01:24:41   don't we don't know that there could be [TS]

01:24:43   a force is that a person in here be I [TS]

01:24:45   think part of the reason they pick it is [TS]

01:24:47   that it does feel like it you can easily [TS]

01:24:50   put in that minor key and if it sounds [TS]

01:24:52   more grandma than say the main star [TS]

01:24:54   wars-themed if you were to put that in [TS]

01:24:56   and it's generally just sort of the [TS]

01:24:59   theme of the good guys right like yes it [TS]

01:25:02   has force associations with it but it's [TS]

01:25:04   it's primarily sort of the horror [TS]

01:25:07   awake-ish theme in part so i think [TS]

01:25:10   that's a really interesting choice and [TS]

01:25:11   it works obviously with the fact that [TS]

01:25:12   this this is a very grim trailer in many [TS]

01:25:16   ways but he also doesn't it's a star [TS]

01:25:18   wars music and yet it does not entirely [TS]

01:25:20   sound like a star wars the right no big [TS]

01:25:23   brassy orchestra here this movie open [TS]

01:25:25   doesn't open with a crawl doesn't open [TS]

01:25:28   the stars in the theme it yeah I don't [TS]

01:25:30   know I i don't know i don't think so was [TS]

01:25:33   I yeah I think no I think you don't I [TS]

01:25:36   think you I think you only opened the [TS]

01:25:38   the [TS]

01:25:39   you know the saga saga the crawl and [TS]

01:25:41   that music I think you have to open this [TS]

01:25:42   move is something different i don't know [TS]

01:25:43   what the hell you do open it with that [TS]

01:25:45   is a bold choice [TS]

01:25:47   well you can open with the Star Wars you [TS]

01:25:50   know moving back into into the distance [TS]

01:25:53   and land like a fanfare but maybe no [TS]

01:25:56   ma'am maybe no crawl I don't know [TS]

01:25:57   anything [TS]

01:25:58   maybe the maybe the template is a clone [TS]

01:26:00   wars and rebels which both hearken to [TS]

01:26:03   that but have their own slightly [TS]

01:26:04   different arrangements [TS]

01:26:06   yeah and and clone wars has a very has a [TS]

01:26:09   slightly different arrangement of the [TS]

01:26:11   Star Wars theme and then often has like [TS]

01:26:12   a quote but no crawl but it does do the [TS]

01:26:14   like Star Wars logo that fades into the [TS]

01:26:16   background so I think maybe maybe [TS]

01:26:18   something like that where you kind of [TS]

01:26:19   take it and twisted and make it your own [TS]

01:26:22   yeah but I guessing that whatever the [TS]

01:26:23   anthology movies are they will be [TS]

01:26:25   consistent to each other [TS]

01:26:27   yeah I feel like this movie can't start [TS]

01:26:29   with the it can't start with a sort of [TS]

01:26:31   the Star Wars theme because this trailer [TS]

01:26:33   does not feel like a trailer for a movie [TS]

01:26:35   that i would expect to start with that [TS]

01:26:36   musical theme regardless of whether the [TS]

01:26:37   crawler regards to run the logo fade [TS]

01:26:39   into the distance that theme is the Star [TS]

01:26:42   Wars saga theme that fits perfectly on [TS]

01:26:43   the force awakens but does not fit on a [TS]

01:26:46   movie like the one of this trailer is [TS]

01:26:47   for like it i think if they did it would [TS]

01:26:49   feel like forced or weird because they [TS]

01:26:52   would do that and then that movie [TS]

01:26:54   follows it is not you know me another [TS]

01:26:56   thing is not Star Wars but it's like how [TS]

01:26:57   else do you differentiate anthology I'm [TS]

01:26:59   like you know this Star Wars story movie [TS]

01:27:01   just to screw with us it's going to [TS]

01:27:02   start with the 20 Century Fox fanfare [TS]

01:27:04   yeah let's not use that I think that's [TS]

01:27:06   still fine [TS]

01:27:07   well so what are the two wrap this up [TS]

01:27:09   what a wonder your what are your [TS]

01:27:10   expectations now having seen the trailer [TS]

01:27:12   what are you thinking about this movie [TS]

01:27:14   let's start with dan well I'm on record [TS]

01:27:16   as being a big fan of the automation [TS]

01:27:18   movies and I wrote a little bit about [TS]

01:27:20   this incited the Guns of Navarone where [TS]

01:27:22   Eagles dare Dirty Dozen and i think a [TS]

01:27:25   Star Wars movie that also plays in that [TS]

01:27:27   sandbox to me just sounds awesome like [TS]

01:27:29   that that's the kind of thing i'd love [TS]

01:27:31   to write is just a you know purely sort [TS]

01:27:34   of on a mission-driven ragtag band of [TS]

01:27:37   misfits and this is fits perfectly i [TS]

01:27:40   think and i think was one of the reasons [TS]

01:27:41   they started with it even though it does [TS]

01:27:43   feel like a downer is that that idea of [TS]

01:27:46   a of a plot works really well with Star [TS]

01:27:50   Wars especially with this particular [TS]

01:27:51   story that they fold out here [TS]

01:27:53   so I I like John I'm sort of curious as [TS]

01:27:55   to how this looks like or does not look [TS]

01:27:58   like a are the star wars movies that [TS]

01:28:00   we've come to know so far and I'm really [TS]

01:28:02   intrigued by the prospect of a [TS]

01:28:03   standalone star wars movie in which you [TS]

01:28:05   know you're not gonna have three movies [TS]

01:28:06   to do all the heavy-lifting you got to [TS]

01:28:08   do a lot of stuff and you got to do it [TS]

01:28:09   in like two and a half hours probably [TS]

01:28:11   and so that sounds super interesting to [TS]

01:28:15   me i'm really looking forward to this i [TS]

01:28:17   really like that they've Lucasfilm I [TS]

01:28:19   think he's had a light touch on the [TS]

01:28:20   marketing so far we've had essentially [TS]

01:28:22   11 officials picture and a teaser and [TS]

01:28:25   were like not for little more than six [TS]

01:28:28   months out like can you imagine a Star [TS]

01:28:30   Wars movie that you didn't know anything [TS]

01:28:31   about until about six months out like [TS]

01:28:33   that seems just doing the impossible to [TS]

01:28:34   believe in the state agent so I like [TS]

01:28:37   that i'm i'm sure we will see something [TS]

01:28:39   else before it comes out but I would [TS]

01:28:40   also be totally okay if we did like if [TS]

01:28:42   this was all we got and then that movie [TS]

01:28:44   opens in december i would be there on [TS]

01:28:46   day one so I I'm you know it doesn't [TS]

01:28:49   take much to sell me on the Star Wars [TS]

01:28:50   obviously but I see nothing in this to [TS]

01:28:52   sort of convince me that this will not [TS]

01:28:55   be a movie that i enjoy reading what do [TS]

01:28:57   you think I think that this is one of [TS]

01:28:59   the better trailers that star wars that [TS]

01:29:02   the folks look at some cut in a while I [TS]

01:29:05   it gives just the just enough [TS]

01:29:08   information to make me really really [TS]

01:29:11   genuinely excited and I think there's [TS]

01:29:12   something a little bit different in this [TS]

01:29:15   then the force awakens trailer at the [TS]

01:29:18   force awakens has that sort of new Star [TS]

01:29:21   Wars trilogy so much is riding on this [TS]

01:29:24   where road one their cues to the past [TS]

01:29:28   are much more subtle in in the case of [TS]

01:29:32   Mon Mothma it's a it's a very strange [TS]

01:29:35   version of subtle and almost eerie [TS]

01:29:37   version of subtle I but it feels much [TS]

01:29:41   more lived-in universe we don't get a [TS]

01:29:43   lot of shiny new we don't get a we don't [TS]

01:29:46   get things that we necessarily haven't [TS]

01:29:48   seen before [TS]

01:29:49   instead we get we've got this [TS]

01:29:52   these grimy sets right we've got [TS]

01:29:54   different stormtroopers we've got new [TS]

01:29:57   characters but it feels very lived-in it [TS]

01:30:00   feels very much like I don't know like [TS]

01:30:04   like you're sitting down to dinner with [TS]

01:30:05   window with with with an old friend it [TS]

01:30:07   feels very episode 4 but not in a way [TS]

01:30:10   not in a knot in a mosh way just this is [TS]

01:30:14   it feels like we're just diving into [TS]

01:30:17   Star Wars and telling a portion of the [TS]

01:30:19   story and that's that's really exciting [TS]

01:30:21   to me I i love tradition like the [TS]

01:30:24   original trilogy and heist movies are [TS]

01:30:27   fantastic [TS]

01:30:28   Felicity Jones looks like she's going to [TS]

01:30:31   be an incredible addition to the [TS]

01:30:33   Lucasfilm actor stable as as forest [TS]

01:30:37   whitaker and everyone else that they've [TS]

01:30:39   cast and like dan i hope that i actually [TS]

01:30:43   don't see anything else besides walking [TS]

01:30:45   the theater I cannot believe that we're [TS]

01:30:47   so close to the movie actually coming [TS]

01:30:49   out nearly seven months something like [TS]

01:30:51   that and Marvel is going to release a [TS]

01:30:54   prequel Mary miniseries in October which [TS]

01:30:57   I'm kind of like I don't know if I want [TS]

01:31:00   to read that before or after but I i [TS]

01:31:03   feel i almost might be more excited for [TS]

01:31:05   lit for felicity jones character that I [TS]

01:31:07   was for ray which I'm a little shocked [TS]

01:31:11   by just did the great characters [TS]

01:31:13   interests me more [TS]

01:31:14   yeah she'sshe's somebody with a history [TS]

01:31:16   which makes it very different from Ray [TS]

01:31:18   who essentially has no history or at [TS]

01:31:19   least no history that we've seen or are [TS]

01:31:21   told about rr-really or is necessary to [TS]

01:31:25   know about are bland hero right but yeah [TS]

01:31:28   like Ray was very much like Luke in that [TS]

01:31:30   way yeah and Jan is not no one yeah it [TS]

01:31:33   feels like on like someone who's had [TS]

01:31:34   some you know had some battles one's won [TS]

01:31:36   some lost some damaged and now has a job [TS]

01:31:40   to do so that's a very satisfied going [TS]

01:31:42   to buy real I I feel like we're [TS]

01:31:44   projecting onto rate because she fits [TS]

01:31:46   into the beginning part of Luke's story [TS]

01:31:47   we extrapolate and say oh and then [TS]

01:31:50   she'll go through just looking through [TS]

01:31:51   and be trampled in the end the same way [TS]

01:31:52   Luke was but we have realistic we have [TS]

01:31:54   no idea [TS]

01:31:55   so you so bad I just put that aside that [TS]

01:31:57   like it's so clearly like you know our [TS]

01:31:59   look here but there's no reason they [TS]

01:32:01   can't take a different direction so for [TS]

01:32:03   this movie [TS]

01:32:05   my my overall feeling is kinda like a [TS]

01:32:07   distinct feeling the force awakens but I [TS]

01:32:08   feel even more strongly here is that up [TS]

01:32:11   the trailer and all this stuff about it [TS]

01:32:13   like we look at it [TS]

01:32:14   you know I just our star wars centuries [TS]

01:32:16   just light up because it's just so it [TS]

01:32:18   looks so amazing and saying look it [TS]

01:32:20   looks like we imagine start looks like [TS]

01:32:22   house how a new hope looked in our [TS]

01:32:24   imagination because everything is so [TS]

01:32:25   sharp and beautiful and detailed and [TS]

01:32:27   like they don't have the budget [TS]

01:32:28   limitations that they had back then and [TS]

01:32:30   we have this amazing technology and we [TS]

01:32:32   can we can do anything within this [TS]

01:32:34   universe it's like it's like what you [TS]

01:32:35   see in your head while reading a book [TS]

01:32:36   about star wars because there's no [TS]

01:32:38   there's no limitations anymore you can [TS]

01:32:40   do anything but the people who make this [TS]

01:32:43   movie have to i really hope they do i [TS]

01:32:47   make it as in a way that makes them [TS]

01:32:50   forget that they were you know we're [TS]

01:32:53   starting out on third base because it's [TS]

01:32:54   Star Wars like you've got x-wings you've [TS]

01:32:56   got you've got the death star you've got [TS]

01:32:57   started you have you've got all this [TS]

01:32:59   stuff [TS]

01:33:00   pretend you have to pretend you don't [TS]

01:33:01   because this is why the force awakens [TS]

01:33:03   works is because they like they used all [TS]

01:33:06   that stuff and they used it as well as [TS]

01:33:08   they possibly could but even if you [TS]

01:33:10   strip all that away it's still just been [TS]

01:33:12   playing fundamentally a good movie [TS]

01:33:14   so if they just concentrate on making a [TS]

01:33:16   good whatever kind of movies is if it's [TS]

01:33:18   a heist movie a spy movie a movie about [TS]

01:33:20   personal betrayal and we're about like [TS]

01:33:23   the darkness of combat whatever movie [TS]

01:33:25   they think they're making pretend you [TS]

01:33:26   don't have any Star Wars IP and make [TS]

01:33:29   that a good movie and then add stars IP [TS]

01:33:31   and that's how you get something like [TS]

01:33:32   the force awakens that has to have a [TS]

01:33:33   good script is that good performances [TS]

01:33:35   the story has to make sense and be good [TS]

01:33:36   and then on top of that it has to be [TS]

01:33:38   star wars and that's I think even more [TS]

01:33:39   important for the anthology anthology [TS]

01:33:41   films these star war stories is they [TS]

01:33:44   have to be solid stories and because [TS]

01:33:46   they're not going to be like the [TS]

01:33:48   attitude you know the saga stories [TS]

01:33:49   they're going to be different kinds so [TS]

01:33:52   you know I think that's why it's a good [TS]

01:33:53   idea to get all sorts of different kinds [TS]

01:33:55   of directors and I just really hope that [TS]

01:33:57   everybody involved like a race is the [TS]

01:34:01   star wars part of it in their mind when [TS]

01:34:03   assessing you know like do we have a [TS]

01:34:05   movie in the same with like Pixar's [TS]

01:34:07   gonna do everything storyboards were you [TS]

01:34:08   know it's just a bunch of drawings on [TS]

01:34:10   paper you don't have any cg at all maybe [TS]

01:34:12   you haven't even modeled anything you [TS]

01:34:13   have to look at it in that form and say [TS]

01:34:14   there's a good story now add all the CG [TS]

01:34:17   and gloss and water effects and whatever [TS]

01:34:19   else you're going to do because that [TS]

01:34:20   doesn't make your movie so that's my [TS]

01:34:23   hope for this movie because it if i [TS]

01:34:25   watch it and it's like that and I [TS]

01:34:27   say if this wasn't star wars did you [TS]

01:34:29   think this was a good movie or just [TS]

01:34:29   think it's so so that will be [TS]

01:34:31   disappointing not that disappointing [TS]

01:34:32   because again it's anthology movie I i [TS]

01:34:34   give them wide latitude to do you know [TS]

01:34:36   interesting things but i just want this [TS]

01:34:39   to be a good movie in whatever genre [TS]

01:34:42   they wanted to be and then if its star [TS]

01:34:44   wars on top of that i will just be [TS]

01:34:46   overjoyed [TS]

01:34:47   yeah I I feel like that I feel like that [TS]

01:34:49   too i I'm encouraged by the trailer and [TS]

01:34:52   like you said earlier the pressures off [TS]

01:34:53   a little bit about star wars because [TS]

01:34:55   force awakens was good and I do i do [TS]

01:34:58   want to ask because people in the chat [TS]

01:35:00   room were actually asking this John [TS]

01:35:02   media blackout policy for this is [TS]

01:35:04   because the pressures off do you not [TS]

01:35:06   care about like seeing a full trailer [TS]

01:35:09   when it drops in a few months or do you [TS]

01:35:11   have a have you set your policy for this [TS]

01:35:13   one [TS]

01:35:13   well i think i think people forget like [TS]

01:35:15   I i watched the first two teasers for [TS]

01:35:17   the force awakens as well like I just [TS]

01:35:18   didn't watch the trailer and I'm glad it [TS]

01:35:20   and watch the travel that trailer that [TS]

01:35:22   the final the real official force [TS]

01:35:23   awakens trailer i think it's fabulous [TS]

01:35:25   trailer and I'm glad it and watch it [TS]

01:35:27   because it brings just a little bit too [TS]

01:35:28   much stuff for me but in many respects [TS]

01:35:32   I you know I know what happens in this [TS]

01:35:34   movie I know I know they're going to get [TS]

01:35:35   the plans at the end and i'm assuming [TS]

01:35:37   the trailer is not going to ruin like [TS]

01:35:38   all of you watched last trail you find [TS]

01:35:40   out she dies in the end like that [TS]

01:35:41   they're not going to ruin that [TS]

01:35:42   so i'm i i'm not going to say whether [TS]

01:35:45   i'm gonna watch the final trailer not [TS]

01:35:47   but certainly I will if they released [TS]

01:35:48   another teaser labeled as a teaser I [TS]

01:35:50   would watch it but i think i'll probably [TS]

01:35:52   checking out and not actually watch the [TS]

01:35:54   trailer trailer especially with so [TS]

01:35:55   little time to go I just still just a [TS]

01:35:56   strong but I'm i watch this one [TS]

01:35:58   I didn't even hesitate watching this one [TS]

01:36:00   and i think i would watch a second [TS]

01:36:01   teaser as well everything else though [TS]

01:36:02   i'm not going to seek out information [TS]

01:36:03   I'm not reading the internet and we're [TS]

01:36:05   not trying to find out i found out what [TS]

01:36:07   happens the gym no I don't wanna know [TS]

01:36:08   you should you should stay off the [TS]

01:36:10   internet between now just ever so eight [TS]

01:36:11   months December this movie comes out in [TS]

01:36:13   December another star wars movie feels [TS]

01:36:14   like we just have one because we just [TS]

01:36:15   did another one here counted all right i [TS]

01:36:18   think that i think that does it for this [TS]

01:36:21   we want why not go into a second hour [TS]

01:36:24   now what we're going to do it free a [TS]

01:36:26   frame-by-frame trailer analysis of Star [TS]

01:36:29   Wars uh broke one a Star Wars story I'd [TS]

01:36:32   like to thank my guests for joining me [TS]

01:36:34   to do this analysis dan more'n calling [TS]

01:36:37   in from far-off lands thanks for being [TS]

01:36:40   here [TS]

01:36:40   my pleasure and i guess i'll see you [TS]

01:36:43   guys in December live long and prosper [TS]

01:36:45   no no Jason certainly calls well thank [TS]

01:36:47   you thank you very much and what will [TS]

01:36:49   you become in this wheat Jason will you [TS]

01:36:53   become that's a good question i might [TS]

01:36:55   become an ad at on a on a sandy beach [TS]

01:36:58   keep you just getting some Sun sipping a [TS]

01:37:00   drink with an umbrella in it [TS]

01:37:02   yeah that's right i'm sure there's a pun [TS]

01:37:04   to be made there but I'm not gonna make [TS]

01:37:06   it John syracuse thank you for being [TS]

01:37:07   here force will be with you always but [TS]

01:37:10   not necessarily with anyone else but we [TS]

01:37:11   can't really tell you it's too early to [TS]
