The Incomparable

288: I Wish I Was Back in Norway

01:00:00   I gotta turn on the laser Steve hold huh [TS]

01:00:02   and note from canada i'm told don't go [TS]

01:00:06   see don't go see pink floyd in the [TS]

01:00:09   summertime in edmonton because when they [TS]

01:00:10   play outdoors have to wait until after [TS]

01:00:12   11pm to actually start the concert and [TS]

01:00:15   you still can't see the lasers at that [TS]

01:00:16   point and by then the band is asleep you [TS]

01:00:19   know we got back to the hotel is there [TS]

01:00:21   really a pink floyd what most of them [TS]

01:00:23   are dead which why [TS]

01:00:24   yeah that's a good question man Pink [TS]

01:00:26   Floyd wow that's a question recipe you [TS]

01:00:29   owe you want to answer that question but [TS]

01:00:31   when you haven't got it man it's a [TS]

01:00:33   question for the universe is an [TS]

01:00:35   interesting predicament i find myself in [TS]

01:00:36   I'm being asked you have to choose [TS]

01:00:38   Manuel what to do [TS]

01:00:40   well well Pink Floyd was probably the [TS]

01:00:42   second band that I kind of immerse [TS]

01:00:44   myself in after the Beatles and dearly [TS]

01:00:47   love almost everything they did they are [TS]

01:00:49   a great album band so it seemed like for [TS]

01:00:51   the album draft they be a good fit [TS]

01:00:53   I'm really anything from my Dark Side of [TS]

01:00:56   the Moon up to the wall maybe the final [TS]

01:01:00   cut but maybe not would qualify as best [TS]

01:01:04   albums of all time for me but I'm going [TS]

01:01:07   to pick what is actually my favorite [TS]

01:01:08   Floyd album that I never get tired of [TS]

01:01:11   and that is metal from 1971 [TS]

01:01:20   [Music] [TS]

01:01:35   partly because again with the [TS]

01:01:37   eclecticism it starts off with one of [TS]

01:01:40   these days which is fairly hard rocking [TS]

01:01:42   for the floyd and it's almost like a [TS]

01:01:45   this very atmospheric sort of horror [TS]

01:01:48   movie soundtrack and then it drifts [TS]

01:01:49   through this really kind of mellow [TS]

01:01:51   section on a pillow of winds as one of [TS]

01:01:54   the iconic songs and fearless which is [TS]

01:01:56   just a fantastic song there's a little [TS]

01:01:59   light jazz in San Tropez Sheamus is also [TS]

01:02:03   present but you know it's short and then [TS]

01:02:06   it then it culminates with the probably [TS]

01:02:09   their greatest album side length [TS]

01:02:10   composition which is echoes which is [TS]

01:02:12   just unbelievably great and i love the [TS]

01:02:16   atmosphere to it i like the lyrics that [TS]

01:02:18   seemed to be about I don't know some [TS]

01:02:19   kind of sea creature rising from the [TS]

01:02:21   depths [TS]

01:02:22   it's hard to say yeah but but it's a [TS]

01:02:27   it's one of those songs that just kind [TS]

01:02:29   of you can get into and sort of float [TS]

01:02:32   around and sort of feel the waves of the [TS]

01:02:34   music drifting in and out and it's it's [TS]

01:02:37   created great song it's a great album [TS]

01:02:39   it's one of the few that that I could [TS]

01:02:44   really seriously consider taking to [TS]

01:02:46   desert island with me because unlike the [TS]

01:02:48   others i haven't gotten tired of it and [TS]

01:02:50   I considered picking darkside just [TS]

01:02:54   because it's such a great album such an [TS]

01:02:55   iconic album and such a an albums album [TS]

01:02:58   but I can no longer enjoy dark side of [TS]

01:03:01   the mountain because I've heard it too [TS]

01:03:02   many times in too many contexts so yah [TS]

01:03:07   metal that said that's the one that that [TS]

01:03:09   you should listen to [TS]

01:03:10   ok Floyd that's great good to know but [TS]

01:03:13   not a metal album i running on metal [TS]

01:03:15   album no wrong a metal album title [TS]

01:03:19   manually d le mass imagine if it wasn't [TS]

01:03:22   for you meddling as hell what the hell [TS]

01:03:27   is that cool of the british guy on all [TS]

01:03:29   right okay Anakin question I so for my [TS]

01:03:34   choice you know everybody everybody all [TS]

01:03:36   the critics everybody loves and cites [TS]

01:03:39   the influence of radiohead's ok computer [TS]

01:03:42   and that's why I'm choosing their best [TS]

01:03:45   album the bend [TS]

01:03:46   from 1995 [TS]

01:03:53   just [TS]

01:03:56   [Music] [TS]

01:04:05   [Music] [TS]

01:04:21   Jason you just snapped them on my ps3 [TS]

01:04:23   and relations is the master Smith the [TS]

01:04:28   bends it is a you know I i first heard [TS]

01:04:31   Radiohead through through some of their [TS]

01:04:32   later stuff that was critically [TS]

01:04:34   acclaimed and glorious less accessible [TS]

01:04:36   actually like a lot of later stuff too [TS]

01:04:39   but for me this is the moment where [TS]

01:04:42   Radiohead still kind of wanted to be you [TS]

01:04:43   too but was inexorably Radiohead that is [TS]

01:04:47   the best and this is a song this is an [TS]

01:04:49   album full of fantastic songs you know [TS]

01:04:52   high and dry is beautiful the benz is a [TS]

01:04:54   great album planet tell our great a song [TS]

01:04:56   on this album planet telex is great and [TS]

01:04:59   black star kills me everytime such great [TS]

01:05:02   and then it's full of great songs so [TS]

01:05:04   what can i say my iron lung is terrific [TS]

01:05:06   it is what is it you do to yourself [TS]

01:05:09   that's called something else right [TS]

01:05:10   uh yeah that's um just time just [TS]

01:05:13   fantastic and the thing i will say for [TS]

01:05:16   you were rolling your eyes at Radiohead [TS]

01:05:17   because you you have heard them as these [TS]

01:05:19   kind of oblique droney r RT experimental [TS]

01:05:24   rockers from their latter period and [TS]

01:05:26   thought oh yes well no wonder the [TS]

01:05:27   critics liked them and no wonder they're [TS]

01:05:29   so asserts esoteric this a rock album [TS]

01:05:31   and it sounds like a rock album and it's [TS]

01:05:33   a really great rock album it is not just [TS]

01:05:36   kind of loops and weird meandering [TS]

01:05:39   sounds in the background it is a a real [TS]

01:05:42   legitimate rock album and has their [TS]

01:05:44   ambient music reputation really [TS]

01:05:46   overtaken there early rock reputation i [TS]

01:05:49   get there i think yeah I think I think [TS]

01:05:51   that'll shock people think it a-and and [TS]

01:05:54   everything I've never actually listened [TS]

01:05:55   to the bends has been just doing but [TS]

01:05:58   maybe i will check it out now it's [TS]

01:06:00   wonderful and it rocks and it's sad yeah [TS]

01:06:02   it is it is it is like a uh yeah it's a [TS]

01:06:05   weird like parallel universe what if [TS]

01:06:07   what if the radiohead you know was [TS]

01:06:10   trying to be you too [TS]

01:06:12   that's the bends it is a rock is a rock [TS]

01:06:14   album it is got its got guitars and [TS]

01:06:16   stuff and not just weird you know your [TS]

01:06:18   old Thom Yorke muttering while loops [TS]

01:06:21   play which again I like a lot of the [TS]

01:06:23   latter-day radio and stuff but not as [TS]

01:06:24   much as I like the benz i would pick [TS]

01:06:26   this album just because of planet telex [TS]

01:06:28   alone you can just put planet telex on a [TS]

01:06:30   disk and i would say that is a great i [TS]

01:06:32   would do that with Blackstar I just play [TS]

01:06:33   black star over and over [TS]

01:06:35   and i would i would listen to that so [TS]

01:06:37   yeah okay there you go i'm sniping I'm [TS]

01:06:40   sniping alright i must amend my earlier [TS]

01:06:42   assessment of your terrible musical [TS]

01:06:44   taste and season album okay job [TS]

01:06:48   well there are many more albums to be [TS]

01:06:49   chosen three more rounds plus all of the [TS]

01:06:52   extra albums in the not selected list [TS]

01:06:55   but those are going to wait for next [TS]

01:06:56   week when we do part two of the [TS]

01:06:58   uncomfortable album draft but until then [TS]

01:07:01   thanks for listening i'm jason l thank [TS]

01:07:03   you Eric and signed david lower Steve [TS]

01:07:05   Lutz anthony johnson andy and Aiko we [TS]
