326: Likeable Jerkability

00:00:02   the incomparable number 326 November [TS]

00:00:11   welcome back everybody to the [TS]

00:00:12   uncomfortable i'm your host Jason snail [TS]

00:00:14   we're here for an edition of I guess you [TS]

00:00:16   could call this old movie club Steve [TS]

00:00:18   lesson here to actually say movie club [TS]

00:00:22   but it is it's moved from 1983 so it's [TS]

00:00:24   not super old and this came up because [TS]

00:00:26   the the gentleman who usually brings us [TS]

00:00:29   the old movies filmed Michaels was on [TS]

00:00:30   Twitter talking about how he thinks that [TS]

00:00:32   the right stuff from 1983 was an [TS]

00:00:35   underappreciated film is that right [TS]

00:00:37   field that I do that accurately that is [TS]

00:00:39   that is correct i it's it's not the best [TS]

00:00:43   film of the 1980s because that's a [TS]

00:00:44   decade that raging bull came out in [TS]

00:00:46   depending on how you want to start [TS]

00:00:48   counting you're nineteen eighties and [TS]

00:00:49   your Amadeus but I think right stuff is [TS]

00:00:53   is easily one of the if not top five top [TS]

00:00:57   10 movies of the nineteen eighties and [TS]

00:00:58   you never hear about it you never really [TS]

00:01:00   hear people uh gasps and on about it and [TS]

00:01:04   I guess that changes tonight that's [TS]

00:01:06   that's right now we're gonna we're gonna [TS]

00:01:07   put it right by talking about this [TS]

00:01:09   classic based on the book by tom wolfe [TS]

00:01:11   about test pilots at the beginning of [TS]

00:01:14   the Space Age so in addition to mr. [TS]

00:01:16   phillip michael is joining us to have a [TS]

00:01:17   conversation about this film and Enoch [TS]

00:01:20   oh hello [TS]

00:01:21   I don't want to make everybody feel old [TS]

00:01:22   but i just did a little search and the [TS]

00:01:25   distance between today and the release [TS]

00:01:28   date of the right stuff is almost the [TS]

00:01:30   same as the distance between the right [TS]

00:01:31   stuff and it's a wonderful life so it is [TS]

00:01:34   how do i I would consider the movie they [TS]

00:01:37   don't want anybody who is not our age [TS]

00:01:38   it's an old movie damn or is also here [TS]

00:01:40   hi Dan hello I think I'm not the [TS]

00:01:43   youngest person on this panel which is [TS]

00:01:45   pretty good for me so I'll take that [TS]

00:01:47   yeah you are you're definitely not [TS]

00:01:48   perhaps the oldest person on the panel [TS]

00:01:51   but we love hey hey hey it's a it's it's [TS]

00:01:54   doctored ring [TS]

00:01:55   welcome back well hello I don't want [TS]

00:01:57   anything to put this podcast in a bad [TS]

00:01:59   light [TS]

00:02:00   I'm talking about keeping our pants [TS]

00:02:02   zipped and our wicks dry [TS]

00:02:04   yeah well that's good somebody had to [TS]

00:02:05   somebody had to have that is what story [TS]

00:02:09   but we'll get to it and yes the youngest [TS]

00:02:11   member of the podcast because he was a [TS]

00:02:13   born in the eighties after this movie [TS]

00:02:16   which makes it gets even hack my co-host [TS]

00:02:18   from the space pod cast liftoff [TS]

00:02:20   hi Steven hey yeah this movie came out [TS]

00:02:22   three years before I was born [TS]

00:02:24   so you know if you guys need to kick off [TS]

00:02:27   early and go to bed we can look carry on [TS]

00:02:30   dan I have discovered route old movie [TS]

00:02:33   club connected to send a personal [TS]

00:02:35   message to all the listeners if right [TS]

00:02:36   now you're sort of pounding the [TS]

00:02:38   dashboard of your car wonder why nobody [TS]

00:02:40   introduction said come on Jason let's [TS]

00:02:42   solve your problems in like this candle [TS]

00:02:44   I'm just surprised and disappointed as [TS]

00:02:46   all of you I've I thought that was being [TS]

00:02:48   the bank NamUs and saying i'm going to [TS]

00:02:50   i'm only the second person called I'm [TS]

00:02:52   sure that someone has an index card [TS]

00:02:53   they've been rehearsing that line so it [TS]

00:02:56   had to get it we got out of the way [TS]

00:02:57   we've cleared that bit we can move [TS]

00:02:58   forward so anyway I we're gonna talk [TS]

00:03:00   about the right stuff I i want to start [TS]

00:03:02   with just pointing out Glen Shepherd [TS]

00:03:05   just two of the names inextricably [TS]

00:03:07   connected to the American astronauts [TS]

00:03:08   depicted in the right stuff also quaid [TS]

00:03:10   harris and Henrickson because there's a [TS]

00:03:13   guy named Glenn who isn't playing John [TS]

00:03:14   plan and there's a guy named Shepherd [TS]

00:03:16   who's not playing alan shepard it's very [TS]

00:03:18   confusing i kept thinking you know it's [TS]

00:03:20   it's scott glenn he's not John Glenn [TS]

00:03:22   he's not he's Gordon Cooper it's totally [TS]

00:03:26   different [TS]

00:03:27   you also have ed harris not playing who [TS]

00:03:29   he plays a part of 1300 generation is to [TS]

00:03:33   guys like what what's what's happening [TS]

00:03:34   two guys in NASA one space for a lot of [TS]

00:03:37   characters you get played by multiple [TS]

00:03:38   people in in other films to like I [TS]

00:03:41   you're in other I was thinking about how [TS]

00:03:43   i had seen from the earth to the moon [TS]

00:03:44   and a lot of these characters obviously [TS]

00:03:46   exists there too but all played by [TS]

00:03:48   different actors who I have like linked [TS]

00:03:50   with those people now I think there may [TS]

00:03:52   even be a couple actors in common [TS]

00:03:53   between them playing different parts and [TS]

00:03:55   that's all so strange and so my wife and [TS]

00:03:58   I were watching this last night and I i [TS]

00:03:59   finished it today because it's three [TS]

00:04:01   hours long so we did some very long week [TS]

00:04:03   we really it's an epic it is an epic and [TS]

00:04:05   we we need to talk about that but using [TS]

00:04:07   you know the second half you know what I [TS]

00:04:08   really remember about that I don't [TS]

00:04:10   remember a whole lot i remember i [TS]

00:04:12   remember the Apollo one accident i'm [TS]

00:04:13   like that was in the front years to the [TS]

00:04:15   moon that's not in the right to tell [TS]

00:04:17   anybody even get to that it's like [TS]

00:04:19   mentioned as an aside at the end I kept [TS]

00:04:21   waiting for it and when they rescue Matt [TS]

00:04:23   Damon at the end of this is that's right [TS]

00:04:25   it is great as well but I I think work [TS]

00:04:28   for somebody who wants to do a supercut [TS]

00:04:29   is all space movies just add them all [TS]

00:04:32   together and that's one big long movie [TS]

00:04:35   set in space when Alan Shepard destroys [TS]

00:04:38   the asteroid with the nuclear weapon [TS]

00:04:40   savers and tawdry Aerosmith song that [TS]

00:04:42   really brings it home for me though it's [TS]

00:04:44   alan shepard and Sam Shepard they do it [TS]

00:04:46   together you see Sam Shepard is played [TS]

00:04:48   by someone else [TS]

00:04:49   oh my so one of the funny things so it [TS]

00:04:53   is an epic it's a three-hour long movie [TS]

00:04:55   and I think one of the you you find out [TS]

00:04:57   very quickly when you watch it or if [TS]

00:04:59   you're rewatch it the the pacing the [TS]

00:05:02   focus there are a lot of different [TS]

00:05:03   characters I i could argue that there [TS]

00:05:06   are two movies here and there just [TS]

00:05:08   juxtaposed against each other we spend [TS]

00:05:10   the first 25 minutes [TS]

00:05:11   this was the other thing my wife [TS]

00:05:12   remember before we started she was like [TS]

00:05:14   I just remember a whole lot of Chuck [TS]

00:05:16   Yeager was like yeah that's the first we [TS]

00:05:18   stopped when we when we left the chuck [TS]

00:05:20   yeager story for the first time it was [TS]

00:05:21   25 minutes into the movie so when you [TS]

00:05:24   when you when you go in thinking oh this [TS]

00:05:25   is going to be about the astronauts like [TS]

00:05:27   no it's about the test pilots and [TS]

00:05:30   astronauts and we spend a lot of time [TS]

00:05:31   with Chuck Yeager and we keep going back [TS]

00:05:33   to chuck yeager and historians kind of [TS]

00:05:35   juxtaposed with the story of of the [TS]

00:05:38   original seven astronauts so I think [TS]

00:05:41   that's one of the interesting things [TS]

00:05:42   about it is it takes its time it spends [TS]

00:05:45   time with characters who you know you [TS]

00:05:47   could have gotten as down a half hour 45 [TS]

00:05:50   minutes easily by taking a chuck yeager [TS]

00:05:52   i'm not saying you should do that but [TS]

00:05:54   I'm saying oh you should absolutely not [TS]

00:05:56   i'm saying it to that that that to tell [TS]

00:05:59   the story in this epic fashion it that's [TS]

00:06:02   why it's a three-hour movie is because [TS]

00:06:03   you need to be able to spend 45 minutes [TS]

00:06:05   of it with one of the guys who's not [TS]

00:06:07   even one of the astronauts because the [TS]

00:06:09   story is that big and there's so many [TS]

00:06:10   characters in it well and s it is a few [TS]

00:06:13   of the astronauts basically get nothing [TS]

00:06:16   yeah you know what we sure all is an [TS]

00:06:18   extra energy movie Lance Henriksen I [TS]

00:06:21   know what anderson scott Carpenter [TS]

00:06:23   carpenter and yes and Scott if you read [TS]

00:06:26   the if you read the books there's a [TS]

00:06:28   a very large chunk of the book devoted [TS]

00:06:31   to Scott carpenters mission in the [TS]

00:06:34   Mercury program and then that is totally [TS]

00:06:36   cut out [TS]

00:06:37   yea it's going on because it's hard to [TS]

00:06:39   it's hard to do guard Gordon Cooper and [TS]

00:06:41   scott Carpenter and tell the story of [TS]

00:06:43   well they kind of either effed up or the [TS]

00:06:46   system did not put in a position where [TS]

00:06:48   they could possibly succeed you have to [TS]

00:06:50   put them either in extreme danger and [TS]

00:06:52   then they pull their way out of it [TS]

00:06:53   showing the steely-eyed determination or [TS]

00:06:57   you find out that the white foot and her [TS]

00:06:59   husband were really about to just break [TS]

00:07:01   everything pretty target of marriage [TS]

00:07:03   apart if not for the fact they wanted to [TS]

00:07:05   keep their their health insurance funded [TS]

00:07:07   by NASA just since you mentioned the the [TS]

00:07:10   chuck yeager part III think it's very [TS]

00:07:12   interesting because I think the best [TS]

00:07:15   thing about this movie is what it has to [TS]

00:07:17   say about myth-making and the theme that [TS]

00:07:21   the the movie goes back to UM and this [TS]

00:07:24   is very much the the organ that Philip [TS]

00:07:27   Kaufman the directory keeps grinding in [TS]

00:07:29   the movie is that they everyone was [TS]

00:07:32   saying no they said that the seven [TS]

00:07:33   greatest pilot ever and really there was [TS]

00:07:36   this other great pilot who didn't fit [TS]

00:07:38   the mold arm didn't have the the college [TS]

00:07:42   education or the the the stable family [TS]

00:07:45   life background and in this kind of a [TS]

00:07:47   wiseass who they they keep out of the [TS]

00:07:49   program in the movie and i i i i find it [TS]

00:07:52   really interesting the way that they may [TS]

00:07:57   use the press in the movie to portray [TS]

00:07:59   the astronauts one way when we the [TS]

00:08:01   audience see that something completely [TS]

00:08:02   different is going on [TS]

00:08:03   and yeah I i really think that the the [TS]

00:08:07   chuck yeager character is as much as you [TS]

00:08:11   can have an integral character in a in [TS]

00:08:13   an ensemble piece like this he is that [TS]

00:08:15   he is the main focus of the movie and I [TS]

00:08:17   think it's much the movies what makes [TS]

00:08:19   the movies so interesting and that it [TS]

00:08:21   might be the reason that of all the [TS]

00:08:22   performances in the movie i believe Sam [TS]

00:08:24   Shepard's was the only that only one [TS]

00:08:26   that was graced with an Oscar nomination [TS]

00:08:29   of that's an indicator of quality but [TS]

00:08:31   i'll tell absolutely right it's [TS]

00:08:33   interesting that you point out that [TS]

00:08:34   where we have this this movie about the [TS]

00:08:36   space program and we spend the first [TS]

00:08:38   half hour [TS]

00:08:39   i'm talking about the space program but [TS]

00:08:41   rather guys find jets and one of the [TS]

00:08:44   most terrible parts of California you [TS]

00:08:46   can actually do and I that's a very [TS]

00:08:50   deliberate choice up by the director and [TS]

00:08:52   it wasn't a popular one because William [TS]

00:08:55   Goldman I think wrote the first draft of [TS]

00:08:57   the of the right stuff screenplay and he [TS]

00:09:00   hated this movie and he hated working [TS]

00:09:03   with Philip Kaufman and and and and quit [TS]

00:09:05   the quit the movie outright so and one [TS]

00:09:09   of the reasons that he decided he didn't [TS]

00:09:11   like the fact that it it held up Chuck [TS]

00:09:13   Yeager is this this paragon while making [TS]

00:09:16   the other guys look like lucky steps you [TS]

00:09:18   just sort of stumbled into it [TS]

00:09:20   I don't know about that i have always [TS]

00:09:21   thought I don't necessarily disagree [TS]

00:09:23   agree with that criticism but it's it's [TS]

00:09:26   the criticism you made but anyhow I I'm [TS]

00:09:28   done talking up i was just gonna say [TS]

00:09:30   that I i like that i like the way that [TS]

00:09:32   you name a book in the movie The Right [TS]

00:09:35   Stuff it's obviously something that is [TS]

00:09:38   so vague but tries to explain something [TS]

00:09:41   that you understand so as soon as it's [TS]

00:09:43   put in front of you and I think that the [TS]

00:09:45   two most powerful parts of the movie to [TS]

00:09:47   come during that during the first half [TS]

00:09:49   hour when you're talking about these [TS]

00:09:51   people who are fighting really really [TS]

00:09:54   hard to get into this place where you're [TS]

00:09:57   doing this job where you will watch [TS]

00:09:59   people die and your wives will basically [TS]

00:10:02   always know what here's one here's one [TS]

00:10:05   of the siren means it doesn't mean that [TS]

00:10:07   some of that police officers going to [TS]

00:10:09   turn off a fire alarm at a store it [TS]

00:10:12   means that's one of your one of your for [TS]

00:10:13   either your husband or one of your [TS]

00:10:15   friends husbands has just died and this [TS]

00:10:18   is something that a job that very few [TS]

00:10:20   people are mentally capable of doing and [TS]

00:10:23   although the course it was a lot of [TS]

00:10:25   discussion between the difference [TS]

00:10:26   between Chuck Yeager someone who was [TS]

00:10:28   wasn't really known of course to history [TS]

00:10:31   before before Tom Wolfe featured in the [TS]

00:10:35   book obviously obviously he he was a [TS]

00:10:37   first break the sound barrier but he's [TS]

00:10:38   in that book of aviation records that [TS]

00:10:41   was the cultural figure you also have [TS]

00:10:43   these other astronauts were doing just [TS]

00:10:45   as much work to get into the space per [TS]

00:10:47   ticket into the space program to fly in [TS]

00:10:50   these absolutely [TS]

00:10:51   untested there was no book whatsoever [TS]

00:10:54   for any of these spacecraft [TS]

00:10:56   I mean we've been talking about that is [TS]

00:10:59   the reason why you need a test pilot is [TS]

00:11:00   because they are used to having there's [TS]

00:11:02   nobody who can tell you anything about [TS]

00:11:04   what how this thing handles this is the [TS]

00:11:06   first time we've set we've built and [TS]

00:11:08   flint and put one of these into flight [TS]

00:11:10   so we have no idea if we've built it [TS]

00:11:12   right or wrong so you have to be at as [TS]

00:11:15   the quote from i think was a big [TS]

00:11:18   Slayton's autobiography is like the [TS]

00:11:20   difference between a test pilot a [TS]

00:11:21   regular pile is that a test pilot gets [TS]

00:11:24   into a bad situation and says I got [TS]

00:11:26   third I got 30 so i'm going to crash in [TS]

00:11:28   30 seconds i got to reject a test pilot [TS]

00:11:30   says I got 30 seconds i've been i can [TS]

00:11:32   still save this so it's all in all of [TS]

00:11:35   them in the end when they do that that [TS]

00:11:37   collective mutiny against NASA saying [TS]

00:11:39   that no no you're not going to try to [TS]

00:11:42   bully us into doing what you want [TS]

00:11:44   bye-bye pulling our flight assignments [TS]

00:11:46   you either you're gonna get you got so [TS]

00:11:48   you got all of your PR invested in these [TS]

00:11:50   us as seven heroes if you want to find [TS]

00:11:52   seven other heroes you're welcome to it [TS]

00:11:54   but we're sticking together and fighting [TS]

00:11:56   to run this that this thing the way that [TS]

00:11:59   we want to run it so it really again [TS]

00:12:00   they're the right stuff [TS]

00:12:02   what is it that makes you push past all [TS]

00:12:04   that BS to to focus on the other task of [TS]

00:12:08   getting killed at at an altitude of 60 [TS]

00:12:12   miles so the movie starts after a [TS]

00:12:15   montage of four by three grainy film [TS]

00:12:19   footage we end up with the first shot [TS]

00:12:23   and this goes to what what who these [TS]

00:12:25   people are what their job is what Andy [TS]

00:12:27   was saying be it is a shock wake up of a [TS]

00:12:30   woman who is basically going to be told [TS]

00:12:33   that her husband just died in a fiery [TS]

00:12:35   plane crash [TS]

00:12:36   that's where this is that's where this [TS]

00:12:39   movie starts and narrated by the band's [TS]

00:12:42   levon Helm you should point out okay [TS]

00:12:44   yeah he's the ease the realizes that [TS]

00:12:48   really just record yeah okay [TS]

00:12:50   they say there's a demon in the scatter [TS]

00:12:52   that's right him [TS]

00:12:54   about their past Mach 2 and then we see [TS]

00:12:57   a man on a horse in the desert very [TS]

00:12:59   Western accept this man is Chuck Yeager [TS]

00:13:02   just the horse have named it duh we can [TS]

00:13:05   ask Chuck Yeager he Twitter he's in that [TS]

00:13:10   he's in the desert and you were out in [TS]

00:13:13   as Phil said kind of a really unpleasant [TS]

00:13:16   part of California this is the future [TS]

00:13:19   Edwards Air Force Base you may know that [TS]

00:13:21   is where the space shuttle landed before [TS]

00:13:23   it started landing back and in florida [TS]

00:13:25   and there's not a lot out there was a [TS]

00:13:27   test pilot range there's a there's a bar [TS]

00:13:30   that that people go to and there are a [TS]

00:13:34   bunch of pictures up behind the bar and [TS]

00:13:35   this is one of the lessons we learned [TS]

00:13:37   very quickly what do you have to do to [TS]

00:13:39   get your picture up there [TS]

00:13:40   the answer is die if you died will put [TS]

00:13:43   your pad is that is the graveyard that [TS]

00:13:44   is the memorial to all of the Dead [TS]

00:13:47   pilots at the at the test facility so [TS]

00:13:51   that that's how we start this movie and [TS]

00:13:53   I and and I'm interested in what people [TS]

00:13:54   have to say about this whole whole part [TS]

00:13:56   of the movie I i wanted to know one [TS]

00:13:58   thing which is appreciated the direction [TS]

00:14:00   in this movie you know movie bars [TS]

00:14:03   oftentimes feel like I don't know fake [TS]

00:14:06   and on places where people have been [TS]

00:14:08   drinking a lot and this this movie bar [TS]

00:14:11   even in the daytime the people who are [TS]

00:14:12   in that bar it the ice they feel drunk [TS]

00:14:15   to me and I i have appreciated that it's [TS]

00:14:17   like they're drunk they're drinking and [TS]

00:14:20   there they feel that way as a man whose [TS]

00:14:22   home had a drink or two in a bar in [TS]

00:14:25   California's high desert accurate is it [TS]

00:14:29   feels it feels like the sort of bar that [TS]

00:14:31   in modern times would have no windows [TS]

00:14:33   and a lot of contractor trucks parked [TS]

00:14:35   outside a 2pm yeah it's a it's there [TS]

00:14:37   they're really drinking there so this is [TS]

00:14:39   this the Bleak landscape of the test [TS]

00:14:41   pilot it's not just that they're they're [TS]

00:14:43   Cowboys I mean I i think that that's an [TS]

00:14:45   intentional parallel here these are [TS]

00:14:46   these are special kinds of people who [TS]

00:14:49   are pushing the limits and have a [TS]

00:14:51   certain attitude about life that allows [TS]

00:14:53   them to be capable of flying these [TS]

00:14:55   untested aircraft and and putting their [TS]

00:14:58   lives in their own hand I like also that [TS]

00:15:00   we're drawing a distinction here between [TS]

00:15:02   some of the pilots obviously our [TS]

00:15:04   military pallets and some of them are [TS]

00:15:05   civilian pilots [TS]

00:15:06   toilets because in the opening we get [TS]

00:15:08   this one pilot who is you know where [TS]

00:15:11   they want him to go up and breaks and he [TS]

00:15:13   says he'll do it 450,000 diets and [TS]

00:15:16   William William Ross who I will always [TS]

00:15:18   think of as the dad on boy meets world [TS]

00:15:20   but um yeah also here to different [TS]

00:15:23   stripes too because you have people who [TS]

00:15:25   are sort of here [TS]

00:15:25   there you know here and trying to make [TS]

00:15:27   some money off it and then as they point [TS]

00:15:29   out when Jaeger says he'll do it [TS]

00:15:31   they're paying him like less than 300 [TS]

00:15:33   bucks monthly so yeah you're already [TS]

00:15:34   paying me write the air force is already [TS]

00:15:36   paying me so all right he just wants to [TS]

00:15:38   fly just right laughs yeah before we [TS]

00:15:40   leave the happy bottom riding club [TS]

00:15:41   there's an important character that [TS]

00:15:43   comes in early are at the funeral and [TS]

00:15:46   it's the man in black the Grim Reaper [TS]

00:15:48   the Angel of Death who shows up [TS]

00:15:50   repeatedly throughout the movie and you [TS]

00:15:54   know sings the song at the funeral and [TS]

00:15:55   always ends up after the funeral [TS]

00:15:58   back at the bar has a beer and then and [TS]

00:16:01   then leaves and i love that I love that [TS]

00:16:04   character throughout the movie well that [TS]

00:16:05   is the great royal dano and I had a note [TS]

00:16:08   in here about him being the specter of [TS]

00:16:09   death too so I because he's a busy hook [TS]

00:16:11   up with a bunch of the explosion the [TS]

00:16:13   rocket explosions to life [TS]

00:16:15   I that there's that there's a structure [TS]

00:16:16   to all this where there are so many [TS]

00:16:17   characters that they don't really have [TS]

00:16:19   names and they don't really have been if [TS]

00:16:22   there's never a line where they explain [TS]

00:16:24   this person is with the chaplains office [TS]

00:16:26   he is a captain his job is this and he [TS]

00:16:28   is he's more like almost like an [TS]

00:16:30   imaginary character and references like [TS]

00:16:33   a the the one that one member of the [TS]

00:16:35   press corps that's allowed to talk and [TS]

00:16:38   not be part of the chorus right fills [TS]

00:16:40   the role of all the press jeff goldblum [TS]

00:16:42   Harry and Harry Shearer the one of the [TS]

00:16:44   best comedy teams I and ending with [TS]

00:16:46   island known as the green for them [TS]

00:16:49   no no no no actually they don't they [TS]

00:16:52   don't forget they don't they don't even [TS]

00:16:53   have any back to look at the IMDB page [TS]

00:16:56   there heck they're actually making the [TS]

00:16:59   credits airless recruiter and recruiter [TS]

00:17:01   not even recruiter one or recruiters [TS]

00:17:02   because they're they're completely are [TS]

00:17:05   compressed together from like 18 [TS]

00:17:07   different people who had 40 different [TS]

00:17:09   roles in panda and putting this thing [TS]

00:17:11   together but you don't all you have to [TS]

00:17:13   do is simply present a really iconic [TS]

00:17:16   lastic new character and we know exactly [TS]

00:17:19   where they fit in [TS]

00:17:20   to the machinery of the stories for such [TS]

00:17:21   a brilliant way you got three hours with [TS]

00:17:23   thought sounds like a lot of time until [TS]

00:17:25   you realize that you've got 12 hours [TS]

00:17:27   worth of story you need to tell [TS]

00:17:29   effectively before you get to the cool [TS]

00:17:31   shots of rockets going off my favorite [TS]

00:17:33   thing about that Minister character the [TS]

00:17:35   train dragon mentioned is at one point [TS]

00:17:38   in the movie they've jumped ahead and [TS]

00:17:40   alan shepard's going up in the rocket [TS]

00:17:42   and he's there and Cape Canaveral and [TS]

00:17:44   what is this is he the only minister and [TS]

00:17:47   how to appear rocket launch well it's [TS]

00:17:50   also wrong because he's Air Force [TS]

00:17:51   Shepherd was Navy he doesn't belong [TS]

00:17:54   there [TS]

00:17:55   no but he shows up because they're the [TS]

00:17:57   angel of death yeah [TS]

00:17:59   also if it might if my job we're going [TS]

00:18:01   to come up and tell i'm sorry your [TS]

00:18:02   husband's dead i might not dress in all [TS]

00:18:05   black [TS]

00:18:05   I might consider a tie that's maybe even [TS]

00:18:08   like go out dark red or something you [TS]

00:18:10   know the thing that jumps out of me in [TS]

00:18:12   the these early bar scenes is sort of [TS]

00:18:14   how low key [TS]

00:18:16   all of it is so we have the slick you'd [TS]

00:18:19   like Dan said demands the money and [TS]

00:18:21   checks as well the efforts already pays [TS]

00:18:22   me like so they just assigned him this [TS]

00:18:24   job doesn't like an open bar like people [TS]

00:18:26   can hear him and you can imagine the [TS]

00:18:28   scene being set today right this would [TS]

00:18:30   be like an underground security [TS]

00:18:32   clearance bunker and said there's a bar [TS]

00:18:36   drinking beer saying yeah we're gonna go [TS]

00:18:38   break the sound barrier tomorrow like [TS]

00:18:40   the it's very informal and casual and [TS]

00:18:43   think that reinforces like the cowboy [TS]

00:18:45   picture the movie tries to paint right [TS]

00:18:47   over with the rules on the frontier [TS]

00:18:48   right there on the edge of is pushing [TS]

00:18:50   the exactly they keep saying so there is [TS]

00:18:52   definitely like a non undiscovered [TS]

00:18:54   country uncharted frontier there's and [TS]

00:18:56   Chuck Yeager such a cowboy that on the [TS]

00:18:59   ride home from the bar he is knocked he [TS]

00:19:03   like it's a tree and it and falls off [TS]

00:19:05   his horse and breaks his ribs his wife [TS]

00:19:09   there's a you know his wife comes racing [TS]

00:19:10   racing his client on horseback across [TS]

00:19:13   the desert oh my god do you want to be [TS]

00:19:15   Chuck Yeager you wanted to [TS]

00:19:17   yeah well I mean there and there's a [TS]

00:19:18   whole thing without with his wife in the [TS]

00:19:20   bar and they banter and then the then [TS]

00:19:21   there's a girl in the bar who tries to [TS]

00:19:24   chat with him and they point out that [TS]

00:19:25   lady that he's going after his wife and [TS]

00:19:27   and and we've done as part of their [TS]

00:19:29   elaborate foreplay yeah exactly right [TS]

00:19:31   but he breaks his ribs [TS]

00:19:33   re cracked his ribs and it's very bad so [TS]

00:19:34   know what's going to do he tries to hide [TS]

00:19:36   it because he really really wants the [TS]

00:19:38   opportunity to to do that to be the guy [TS]

00:19:41   to break the sound barrier and and so [TS]

00:19:44   you know he ends up to pull the guy [TS]

00:19:47   aside and they cut just the guy just [TS]

00:19:49   takes the broom from a janitor and saws [TS]

00:19:52   the end off of it and puts it in his [TS]

00:19:53   jacket and hands it to ya it does [TS]

00:19:55   measure it first he does with his [TS]

00:19:57   forearm [TS]

00:19:58   yeah but it's pretty funny that he's [TS]

00:19:59   just like I'm just gonna lay this down [TS]

00:20:01   and just there it is i got there i got [TS]

00:20:04   reaction shot of the janitor is [TS]

00:20:05   priceless know it's in fact the [TS]

00:20:07   bereavement it's all okay i guess with [TS]

00:20:10   this little short broom now [TS]

00:20:12   yeah that's that's pretty funny but and [TS]

00:20:14   then charged so do you know what happens [TS]

00:20:15   check your goes up there and you know [TS]

00:20:18   the the we've been set up with all these [TS]

00:20:19   failures that that there is that demon [TS]

00:20:22   that's out there at the sound barrier [TS]

00:20:23   but we hear the first sonic boom which [TS]

00:20:26   everybody down on the ground or first [TS]

00:20:27   sonic boom that wasn't like you know [TS]

00:20:29   crack of the whip or something from an [TS]

00:20:30   aircraft and everybody looks like well [TS]

00:20:33   he's dead on the ground but he's not [TS]

00:20:36   he's flying around and you know that [TS]

00:20:38   that's our 25 minutes with with Chuck [TS]

00:20:40   Yeager he breaks the sound barrier and [TS]

00:20:42   of course but i think there might be [TS]

00:20:44   something wrong with this year mark [TS]

00:20:45   meters start going crazy up its bob [TS]

00:20:47   fitts above the three right now yeah you [TS]

00:20:50   don't know that if you break the sound [TS]

00:20:51   barrier you have bought the sound very [TS]

00:20:53   same really well that and the best part [TS]

00:20:57   of that scene because that that this [TS]

00:20:58   again is is a sign of the the [TS]

00:21:01   scriptwriting where they don't do really [TS]

00:21:03   a lot of explaining they just started [TS]

00:21:05   drop you in they have the the publicity [TS]

00:21:08   man is is going to call the papers and [TS]

00:21:11   and and the air force man says houghton [TS]

00:21:14   no can't do that because the Russians my [TS]

00:21:17   period the Russians there are allies [TS]

00:21:20   well yeah and this is the explanation [TS]

00:21:22   for why nobody knows Chuck Yeager exist [TS]

00:21:25   on its very compact it's very economical [TS]

00:21:27   and that's the reason why he's not know [TS]

00:21:29   he's not a hero because there was no [TS]

00:21:32   publicity that it's it's a weird thing [TS]

00:21:33   to say about a movie that's three hours [TS]

00:21:35   but there is some really compact story [TS]

00:21:37   to exactly on in this movie [TS]

00:21:39   six years later and we see Gordon Cooper [TS]

00:21:42   who is a who [TS]

00:21:44   is it was heading to heading to edwards [TS]

00:21:49   air force base which is now I think [TS]

00:21:50   changed its name by the by this time [TS]

00:21:52   later played by a fresh out of the womb [TS]

00:21:54   dennis quaid very so young dennis quaid [TS]

00:21:57   so young [TS]

00:21:58   if you if you ever want to just pay the [TS]

00:22:00   majesty of young dennis quaid watch this [TS]

00:22:02   movie and Breaking Away back-to-back [TS]

00:22:04   because it is just up dennis quaid [TS]

00:22:06   you're young and beautiful than a Greek [TS]

00:22:08   god what happened to you what happens to [TS]

00:22:11   all of us fill the margins and I'm yes I [TS]

00:22:14   mean if you're better off than Randy so [TS]

00:22:19   we what we get some more there's a smoke [TS]

00:22:23   on the horizon there's another funeral [TS]

00:22:25   there's a missing man formation flyover [TS]

00:22:27   a picture is put on the wall at the bar [TS]

00:22:30   but these these new pilots have have [TS]

00:22:33   arrived and it's not just it's not just [TS]

00:22:36   Gordo Cooper it's gus grissom to and [TS]

00:22:40   there's a major Barre faux pas [TS]

00:22:42   where where Gordo says I tell you how [TS]

00:22:46   does a guy get up on that wall say maybe [TS]

00:22:48   maybe one day you'll be putting my [TS]

00:22:50   picture on there and everybody's simply [TS]

00:22:52   turns and says oh you stupid and a word [TS]

00:22:56   that we can't use maybe we will be [TS]

00:22:59   putting your p.m. i I've no doubt that [TS]

00:23:01   that's likely that [TS]

00:23:02   yeah you are exactly that much of a rube [TS]

00:23:05   it's amazing [TS]

00:23:05   Dennis quite is fantastic and this this [TS]

00:23:08   is the ultimate dennis quaid yeah well [TS]

00:23:10   that that sort of taps into his likable [TS]

00:23:13   jerk ability [TS]

00:23:15   yeah where I am just I am fantastic and [TS]

00:23:18   i know it and I'm gonna let you know [TS]

00:23:20   you're not that fantastic i know but i'm [TS]

00:23:23   pretty good and imagine Gus Grissom's [TS]

00:23:26   you can't have a face that that's that's [TS]

00:23:29   that line and whether an experienced [TS]

00:23:31   saying those kind of cocky lines but you [TS]

00:23:33   can have Dennis you have does quit [TS]

00:23:35   saying it and you know that okay well [TS]

00:23:37   hopefully he will learn better than this [TS]

00:23:39   we will find this charming someone who [TS]

00:23:41   is old but its own you don't get old and [TS]

00:23:43   say lines like that and get one year [TS]

00:23:45   older than that so that's actually [TS]

00:23:46   really good selection of of casting so [TS]

00:23:49   this is you know Yeager is the King here [TS]

00:23:52   but there are these new people that are [TS]

00:23:54   coming in [TS]

00:23:55   and we know we know if you know anything [TS]

00:23:56   about history that these are the these [TS]

00:23:58   are going to be the the future [TS]

00:24:01   astronauts Veronica Cartwright who [TS]

00:24:03   graced us with her presence in alien [TS]

00:24:05   which we covered not too long ago is is [TS]

00:24:09   one of the wives here she's Betty [TS]

00:24:11   Grissom yeah i should mention barbara [TS]

00:24:12   hershey who is a Chuck Yeager's wife my [TS]

00:24:16   note there is literally just Barbara [TS]

00:24:17   Hershey wow thats it thats this is your [TS]

00:24:21   this is your barbara hershey golden era [TS]

00:24:23   yeah listen hoo hoo hoosiers she had a [TS]

00:24:26   Marion Ravenwood quality about her [TS]

00:24:28   absolutely ah so yes the demon lives out [TS]

00:24:31   further past Mach 2 and chuck is going [TS]

00:24:34   to chase the demon and then the world [TS]

00:24:36   changes we cut to a room in Washington i [TS]

00:24:40   guess and a door opens and a kid runs in [TS]

00:24:43   and says it's called Sputnik and they [TS]

00:24:46   say you know sit out [TS]

00:24:48   I i enjoyed this bit I enjoyed it yep [TS]

00:24:51   that that is a good bit um can we talk [TS]

00:24:54   about the the recruit additional let's [TS]

00:24:57   get together let's talk about it now [TS]

00:24:59   we're because this is our recruiting how [TS]

00:25:01   do we find who will be an astronaut [TS]

00:25:03   section so this is this is going to be [TS]

00:25:05   me as the lonely man in the room I like [TS]

00:25:08   Harry Shearer and jeff goldblum in many [TS]

00:25:11   things I don't really like them in this [TS]

00:25:13   movie I really think totally it's it's [TS]

00:25:16   just it's all over the yard and four for [TS]

00:25:21   a movie that has a great deal of humor [TS]

00:25:23   hear it he that they're a little bit out [TS]

00:25:26   of place and out of time to me and part [TS]

00:25:29   of the reason might be if that a few [TS]

00:25:32   years ago wired a oral history of the [TS]

00:25:35   right stuff which is still online and [TS]

00:25:38   reading it will actually take you longer [TS]

00:25:41   than watching the movie and apparently [TS]

00:25:44   if thats to be believed a Goldblum and [TS]

00:25:46   sheer had no lines and if the direction [TS]

00:25:49   was just and say some stuff hopefully [TS]

00:25:51   it'll be funny and I and and some of it [TS]

00:25:55   is and some of it I I feel sort of [TS]

00:25:58   breaks the the mood of the picture just [TS]

00:26:01   that's my feeling about those two [TS]

00:26:03   it's a bit bra brought that's my [TS]

00:26:05   criticism but let's recall that there [TS]

00:26:07   job isn't to carry any of the drama of [TS]

00:26:10   this movie their job is they got two [TS]

00:26:12   important jobs that are really really [TS]

00:26:14   tough jobs to do one there their land [TS]

00:26:16   pipe here they are basically here to [TS]

00:26:18   deliver a whole bunch of backfilled [TS]

00:26:20   information that the audience was gonna [TS]

00:26:22   need as we go through the movie and i [TS]

00:26:25   also need to serve as some of the [TS]

00:26:26   connective tissue through a section of [TS]

00:26:29   the movie where there go the story's [TS]

00:26:30   going all over the place and if you [TS]

00:26:32   don't have if we don't have we don't [TS]

00:26:34   recognize these two guys who are going [TS]

00:26:36   from hotel room to place to to an [TS]

00:26:38   aircraft carrier [TS]

00:26:39   we're kind of lost in a driftwood their [TS]

00:26:42   souls just sort of following these two [TS]

00:26:43   guys around and so to make them anything [TS]

00:26:46   more than a bunch of stuffed shirts that [TS]

00:26:48   are there to here read this card make [TS]

00:26:51   sure you say that we're at NSF air force [TS]

00:26:53   base now and that this person had that [TS]

00:26:55   this person has just set a speed record [TS]

00:26:56   you have to level it with some comedy [TS]

00:26:59   and they contribute her so well it's [TS]

00:27:01   such a simple ways just just the I [TS]

00:27:03   imagine these two guys just come up with [TS]

00:27:05   the idea like as they're waiting for to [TS]

00:27:07   be told ok the cameras are so we're [TS]

00:27:08   about to do it take Harry shares like [TS]

00:27:10   quick switch coats with me we get out [TS]

00:27:12   i'll be i'll be putting on her come [TS]

00:27:13   because i got my code and it's just that [TS]

00:27:15   and how many times have I seen it at the [TS]

00:27:18   last time I saw was just like years ago [TS]

00:27:19   but it's always one of the machines i [TS]

00:27:21   always think about the idea and the [TS]

00:27:24   other 1i have to have to say that every [TS]

00:27:26   time I think that if they're going [TS]

00:27:27   they're good they're showing films of [TS]

00:27:29   different people who they think might be [TS]

00:27:31   a sort of people who want to go after [TS]

00:27:32   and Harry shares have now trying to [TS]

00:27:35   think of a some sort of a stunt driver [TS]

00:27:38   I don't know I'm sorry as a demolition [TS]

00:27:40   derby people and acrobats shit okay [TS]

00:27:43   they're saying they're saying they said [TS]

00:27:44   that the line and the line he says also [TS]

00:27:46   he already he already owns his own the [TS]

00:27:48   own element I I don't know if X Factor [TS]

00:27:50   are already oh listen I thought that's [TS]

00:27:53   one of those jokes I thought about every [TS]

00:27:55   month for the my entire life until I die [TS]

00:27:58   and honestly one of the worst portrayals [TS]

00:28:00   of dwight eisenhower on-screen if i may [TS]

00:28:03   just say outside of Tom Selleck plane [TS]

00:28:06   and a very bad Eisenhower who apparently [TS]

00:28:08   if IMDb trivia is to be believed was [TS]

00:28:11   dubbed by kevin Pollak you [TS]

00:28:12   his first things first miracle i think [TS]

00:28:15   no no I want test pilot I went test [TS]

00:28:18   pilots I don't sound like that at all [TS]

00:28:20   says Eisenhower imagine if he hadn't had [TS]

00:28:23   that inside to be a very different movie [TS]

00:28:25   yeah it was the demolition derby people [TS]

00:28:27   who have the right stuff [TS]

00:28:28   imagine I would watch that movie or the [TS]

00:28:31   surface or the surfers and demolition of [TS]

00:28:33   the acrobats that's that your bicycle [TS]

00:28:35   across the tightrope i want i want the [TS]

00:28:38   the part process where they bring in a [TS]

00:28:40   invite demolition derby people acrobat [TS]

00:28:42   surfers and test pilots and they all mix [TS]

00:28:44   together and then from that they picked [TS]

00:28:46   they have to be and have to be wearing [TS]

00:28:48   their stage costumes while they're [TS]

00:28:49   trying out like that are milling about [TS]

00:28:50   any idea what I want some banditos I [TS]

00:28:53   want some people are dressed up as the [TS]

00:28:55   as world war one aces and then they pick [TS]

00:28:57   seven astronauts and it's all the test [TS]

00:28:59   pilots sorry surfers it's not gonna it's [TS]

00:29:02   it's not gonna happen [TS]

00:29:03   odds are stacked against you we we get [TS]

00:29:05   you know Harry Shearer and jeff goldblum [TS]

00:29:07   I think they're fine they're dead [TS]

00:29:08   they're scenes with that there in that i [TS]

00:29:10   really like where I think the tone is [TS]

00:29:11   right but i sorta sighs get your point [TS]

00:29:13   filled with some sometimes I feel like [TS]

00:29:14   it's coming out of a entirely different [TS]

00:29:17   movie i like the scene we're throwing up [TS]

00:29:19   on the ship I think that's really that's [TS]

00:29:22   really fun scene and yeah the code the [TS]

00:29:23   code thing is funny but but there you go [TS]

00:29:25   getting across that there are this what [TS]

00:29:28   I like about them and some of these [TS]

00:29:30   other scenes is how clueless the [TS]

00:29:33   government is in these early days they [TS]

00:29:34   know they want to beat the Russians but [TS]

00:29:36   you know all the things we take for [TS]

00:29:38   granted about how space program works [TS]

00:29:41   and how you pick astronauts are that it [TS]

00:29:43   gets across that they have no idea like [TS]

00:29:45   this is they they literally they have no [TS]

00:29:47   idea what they're doing they're still [TS]

00:29:49   trying to figure this out [TS]

00:29:50   they have all these crazy things like [TS]

00:29:52   like using acrobats as as astronauts [TS]

00:29:55   because they're good at going upside [TS]

00:29:57   down or something like that [TS]

00:29:59   hey that's what you're in gold blue [TS]

00:30:00   martini is they're the kind of [TS]

00:30:02   incompetent and they represent the whole [TS]

00:30:04   government bureaucracy you know Phil's [TS]

00:30:07   right there is a there's a total [TS]

00:30:09   difference when they're on i like it and [TS]

00:30:12   i also think it's okay [TS]

00:30:14   probably because this movie is three and [TS]

00:30:16   a quarter hours long and more shorter [TS]

00:30:18   movie it would really be disturbing but [TS]

00:30:21   in the overall scheme of things that [TS]

00:30:23   really you remember them speaking [TS]

00:30:25   indistinctly and they don't take up [TS]

00:30:28   surprisingly they don't really take up [TS]

00:30:30   that much of the movie I mean once the [TS]

00:30:32   astronauts get recruited they're out [TS]

00:30:34   there is also it's also kinda cool when [TS]

00:30:36   you compare how the we see everything [TS]

00:30:40   that's going on at NASA and we course [TS]

00:30:42   know that Barnett whatever the weather [TS]

00:30:44   whether the agency was at that point [TS]

00:30:45   that of course they they have no idea [TS]

00:30:47   what's gonna happen to a human body when [TS]

00:30:50   they try to put in space they have no [TS]

00:30:51   idea what's good what's possible they [TS]

00:30:53   have no idea what skills are going to be [TS]

00:30:54   useful and so they are like chickens [TS]

00:30:56   with their heads been good let's cut off [TS]

00:30:58   but meanwhile all they all the [TS]

00:31:01   government knows about the Russians is [TS]

00:31:02   that they have puts they've put a [TS]

00:31:04   satellite into space we didn't know that [TS]

00:31:05   that was that was going on and we will [TS]

00:31:08   we only get reports that there is this [TS]

00:31:10   mysterious black leather black just [TS]

00:31:14   cheska transcoded figure walking in the [TS]

00:31:17   distance with a good heat waves above [TS]

00:31:19   him call the chief designer no one knows [TS]

00:31:21   his name they only know he's bald and [TS]

00:31:23   really Russian looking and that and let [TS]

00:31:26   me maybe they're ready they're getting [TS]

00:31:27   ready to do a space platforms gonna bomb [TS]

00:31:29   us we're gonna try to seize control of [TS]

00:31:31   space and they might be so far ahead of [TS]

00:31:33   us we can't possibly we can't possibly [TS]

00:31:35   keep up and so on that basis it's really [TS]

00:31:39   cool that we show that these are we've [TS]

00:31:41   got people who essentially are like well [TS]

00:31:42   what if we were to just like make a [TS]

00:31:45   something like a giant tetherball and [TS]

00:31:47   put men in it and keep swinging and [TS]

00:31:49   swinging it and then like sort of cut [TS]

00:31:50   the cord and it will fly up in the air [TS]

00:31:52   and maybe that's how we'll get people [TS]

00:31:53   into space that's how that's how big [TS]

00:31:55   they want us to think that this is the [TS]

00:31:57   challenge was at this point in its in [TS]

00:31:59   the time we got the rocket scientist got [TS]

00:32:01   the German rocket scientists are Germans [TS]

00:32:02   are way better than they're Germans but [TS]

00:32:06   uh huh but the you know the people and [TS]

00:32:08   Emma capsule all that so then the next [TS]

00:32:10   section of the movie is all about the [TS]

00:32:13   test testing of the testing of the [TS]

00:32:15   astronaut candidate so this is you get [TS]

00:32:17   the you know you don't want our best [TS]

00:32:19   pilots but there's the whole thing about [TS]

00:32:21   like they wanted military and they [TS]

00:32:22   wanted college-educated they're like all [TS]

00:32:24   these different things that which [TS]

00:32:25   basically rules out Yeager we see Gus [TS]

00:32:28   Grissom we see they they watch John [TS]

00:32:30   Glenn on TV playing like a name that [TS]

00:32:33   tune [TS]

00:32:34   right they got uh and and so we we we [TS]

00:32:38   meet uh we meet all of them here [TS]

00:32:40   Simpson not Sam Shepard got Alan Shepard [TS]

00:32:43   see i did it i do it [TS]

00:32:45   scotland not John when and he's playing [TS]

00:32:48   alan shepard they do a lot of like [TS]

00:32:52   physical test there's the there they're [TS]

00:32:54   sizing each other up [TS]

00:32:55   they have to blow they have to keep a [TS]

00:32:57   ping-pong ball and a to blowing bubbles [TS]

00:33:00   which is a fun scene where they're kind [TS]

00:33:02   of you know falling out in them and then [TS]

00:33:06   is it it's dennis quaid like who gets to [TS]

00:33:08   he just wants to get break the record so [TS]

00:33:10   like he waits a second after he breaks [TS]

00:33:11   the record he's like yeah he looks down [TS]

00:33:13   the table and and and two other people [TS]

00:33:16   including every letter to the app sorry [TS]

00:33:18   that going carpenters like patiently oh [TS]

00:33:20   I just checking and checking their [TS]

00:33:22   watches ya make me wet nurse merch and [TS]

00:33:24   her mole who I think that separate [TS]

00:33:26   credit card like watching everything [TS]

00:33:28   just passionately i just i enjoy the and [TS]

00:33:31   also of course the the inter-service [TS]

00:33:33   rivalry between the Marines and the Air [TS]

00:33:36   Force the Navy and we should probably [TS]

00:33:39   discuss briefly alan shepard's [TS]

00:33:42   impressions [TS]

00:33:44   josé Jimenez well so he's doing it's [TS]

00:33:45   bill Dana on the on the outsole didn't [TS]

00:33:47   show doing his Jose Jimenez character [TS]

00:33:49   which we can question that but then they [TS]

00:33:53   put a link they hang a lantern on it [TS]

00:33:55   because they have the Latino orderly or [TS]

00:33:59   whatever [TS]

00:34:00   whoo yeah does the disapproving of the [TS]

00:34:02   plane x pro football great Anthony Music [TS]

00:34:05   Hall of Famer Anthony Munoz not his [TS]

00:34:07   actual voice yes voice was dubbed in by [TS]

00:34:10   somebody who with a very very rapid [TS]

00:34:12   strange deep voice that has nothing to [TS]

00:34:15   do with Anthony Munoz is actual voice [TS]

00:34:17   yeah so they do hang a lantern on that [TS]

00:34:20   that he that that I mean because it's [TS]

00:34:22   like again the Jose Jimenez stuff is [TS]

00:34:24   kinda questionable and then and then [TS]

00:34:26   Shepherd kind of pushes it even further [TS]

00:34:27   but they do that all of the all of the [TS]

00:34:30   Hispanic people again are in the [TS]

00:34:32   elevator with him while they're growing [TS]

00:34:34   up in the elevator with tubes coming out [TS]

00:34:35   of their butts in another scene that is [TS]

00:34:37   fascinating and and they you know they [TS]

00:34:41   asked like your impressions very good [TS]

00:34:44   but what you say is very bad [TS]

00:34:46   the ad so he gets the message there and [TS]

00:34:50   then he he also does some Gordon Cooper [TS]

00:34:53   does some sweet talking to the nurse who [TS]

00:34:55   immediately demands to see his wife [TS]

00:34:57   yes that's which shows the pressure that [TS]

00:34:59   their underwriting like he's like oh [TS]

00:35:01   geez they want to show that i have a [TS]

00:35:02   stable home life if I'm gonna get this [TS]

00:35:04   job so he has to say we need to pretend [TS]

00:35:07   that we have a stable home light up and [TS]

00:35:10   she you know he she comes out and says I [TS]

00:35:12   you know I told i told them that I that [TS]

00:35:14   we were great i lied [TS]

00:35:16   yeah there's a lot of real truth a lot [TS]

00:35:18   of things that they were talking about [TS]

00:35:20   Abby obliquely and yet their marriage [TS]

00:35:22   was kind of over with at that point and [TS]

00:35:24   they were staying together only because [TS]

00:35:25   at that point nobody knew what would [TS]

00:35:28   happen to your career if you are we were [TS]

00:35:30   in an ascendant in that in that role as [TS]

00:35:32   pilot and you get a divorce and so [TS]

00:35:35   that's why there's a lot of we can fool [TS]

00:35:37   around but we can't fool around with [TS]

00:35:39   such a point that our wives will [TS]

00:35:40   actually divorce us it's it's it was a [TS]

00:35:44   tough tough road [TS]

00:35:45   yeah because they don't know if they [TS]

00:35:46   there everybody wants these jobs so if [TS]

00:35:49   you're if you're getting a divorce to [TS]

00:35:50   you just or or have been divorced you [TS]

00:35:52   get thrown out they don't know what the [TS]

00:35:55   issue is going to be so he's like let's [TS]

00:35:56   just not rock the boat and we'll just do [TS]

00:35:58   it will just keep doing this I don't [TS]

00:35:59   know how you guys feel but in looking at [TS]

00:36:01   the runtime and looking at you know my [TS]

00:36:03   notes being broken down by sort of seen [TS]

00:36:05   the whole testing segment of this movie [TS]

00:36:08   feels really long and I guess they're [TS]

00:36:10   trying to get the point across it [TS]

00:36:12   we don't know what's gonna happen like [TS]

00:36:13   we have to put you through all sorts of [TS]

00:36:15   stress because your eyeballs make it [TS]

00:36:17   sucks when your sockets but we're gonna [TS]

00:36:18   shot your arms or a while until it's [TS]

00:36:20   until it's completely numb why I don't [TS]

00:36:23   know what we'll see what that does [TS]

00:36:24   you're gonna love it [TS]

00:36:26   we're gonna put on a shaking chair with [TS]

00:36:28   two fried eggs on your eyes yeah yeah [TS]

00:36:30   well because that you might run into [TS]

00:36:32   that situation and its base [TS]

00:36:34   anything could happen in space some of [TS]

00:36:36   it is also the building not only the [TS]

00:36:37   rivalry but the camaraderie right well [TS]

00:36:39   yeah I'm important later on very much [TS]

00:36:42   like that they have to band together [TS]

00:36:43   yeah that is that's and something that [TS]

00:36:45   keeps coming back to me is that they are [TS]

00:36:48   competitors and they are also a unit and [TS]

00:36:52   that's fascinating to me but i think [TS]

00:36:55   that i think they're there may be [TS]

00:36:56   somebody with no military background I [TS]

00:36:58   feel like that maybe as a millet [TS]

00:36:59   everything to write is like you are [TS]

00:37:01   going to snipe with your your your your [TS]

00:37:04   compatriots and you may want to end up [TS]

00:37:07   doing better than them but in the end [TS]

00:37:09   you're all on the same side and you're [TS]

00:37:10   all gonna take care of each other and we [TS]

00:37:12   see in several instances where they turn [TS]

00:37:14   on a dime to join up and exert their own [TS]

00:37:18   authority when they can we see that back [TS]

00:37:21   in California with jager and [TS]

00:37:23   what's-his-name the that's got filled to [TS]

00:37:26   its Mach 2 right there's there's rivalry [TS]

00:37:28   you know he's he's upset that he didn't [TS]

00:37:30   get there first but then there's a [TS]

00:37:31   congratulatory commented kind of at the [TS]

00:37:34   same time right easy like eyeballs wife [TS]

00:37:36   to that was a little weird [TS]

00:37:38   he's going up you're going up tomorrow [TS]

00:37:40   aren't you yeah I'm going up tomorrow so [TS]

00:37:44   now they get introduced and we don't we [TS]

00:37:45   get this other aspect of it which is the [TS]

00:37:47   public relations part of being an [TS]

00:37:50   astronaut and there's a there's a line [TS]

00:37:51   later in the movie where dennis quaid [TS]

00:37:53   basically says that they're gonna have [TS]

00:37:55   it right at the end he's like they're [TS]

00:37:57   gonna build me a house and I get paid by [TS]

00:37:58   life magazine i get all this money and i [TS]

00:38:00   haven't even been in space yet and we [TS]

00:38:03   noticed that did you [TS]

00:38:04   ok but this is it so so the amazing [TS]

00:38:07   thing about this press conference that [TS]

00:38:08   they have is that everybody's doing the [TS]

00:38:10   like mumbly one word answers and then [TS]

00:38:12   John Glenn basically like takes a [TS]

00:38:14   microphone and stands up and begins to [TS]

00:38:16   hold court and everybody else is looking [TS]

00:38:18   like oh jeez and but it also kind of [TS]

00:38:20   gets them all going and they all start [TS]

00:38:22   doing you know saying more things about [TS]

00:38:25   it and this leads to so there's that and [TS]

00:38:28   then is the meeting with my life [TS]

00:38:29   magazine where Virgil Grissom wants to [TS]

00:38:32   be called gusts and it's like that's no [TS]

00:38:34   good with your middle name is Ivan okay [TS]

00:38:36   Gus the astronaut all right we're gonna [TS]

00:38:38   do that that the the press conference [TS]

00:38:40   thing also i think shed light on you [TS]

00:38:41   know obviously Glenn goes on to become [TS]

00:38:43   you have a career in politics and it's [TS]

00:38:45   pretty clear why between the you know p [TS]

00:38:47   astronaut he's incredibly personable and [TS]

00:38:50   well-spoken here and so you can kind of [TS]

00:38:52   see like he's got that angle played out [TS]

00:38:54   i also really my favorite line from the [TS]

00:38:56   entire press conference [TS]

00:38:57   Tina Sheperd saying i attend church [TS]

00:38:59   regularly and the force green that [TS]

00:39:05   Scott plan does scotty with respect [TS]

00:39:07   100-meter regularly i will after that to [TS]

00:39:11   dan that was so so transparently fake it [TS]

00:39:14   was fantastic [TS]

00:39:15   yeah it kinda is who juggling as though [TS]

00:39:17   they've literally around again [TS]

00:39:19   throughout the testing part of the [TS]

00:39:20   reason is the reason for the testing was [TS]

00:39:22   to show everybody hurts with these two [TS]

00:39:23   people are and of course it's good for [TS]

00:39:25   that that that the breathing tests it [TS]

00:39:27   comes down between scart scott Carpenter [TS]

00:39:29   and John Glenn and then finally [TS]

00:39:31   carpenter like no good is out of air [TS]

00:39:34   like a half a second before John Glenn [TS]

00:39:36   well I'll that boy John you really gave [TS]

00:39:39   me a run for my money there [TS]

00:39:41   well i was i was like Don bye-bye use [TS]

00:39:43   God and of course that the toughened [TS]

00:39:44   more veteran guys are like my God look [TS]

00:39:46   it's Archie and Jughead yeah that's [TS]

00:39:49   right so you know that those are the [TS]

00:39:50   people who would not even not even like [TS]

00:39:52   I'm not playing an angle I I just feel [TS]

00:39:54   like I'm the Yankee duelist I've ever [TS]

00:39:56   felt by golly here here representing [TS]

00:39:58   America to the space race all the press [TS]

00:40:00   conference just has my favorite obvious [TS]

00:40:02   joke of the movie which the Hallelujah [TS]

00:40:04   Chorus playing at the end of it is [TS]

00:40:06   they're all doing the lifting hands to [TS]

00:40:08   the sky and whatnot when you talk about [TS]

00:40:10   how John Glenn's portrayed I think it [TS]

00:40:12   actually pivots into a really i thought [TS]

00:40:14   this was a really well-done moment which [TS]

00:40:16   is we [TS]

00:40:18   ok he's the guy who was on TV playing [TS]

00:40:19   name that tune he's the guy who holds [TS]

00:40:21   court in the conference in a press [TS]

00:40:22   conference he's Archie and Jughead right [TS]

00:40:24   hehe is an outsider to some of these [TS]

00:40:26   other guys who are wilder and then when [TS]

00:40:30   they have when they all are meeting and [TS]

00:40:31   all of that and John Glenn's wife like [TS]

00:40:34   doesn't talk to them and the to the [TS]

00:40:37   other wives and and there this is a [TS]

00:40:39   moment where it like totally plays into [TS]

00:40:41   like who does she think she is very [TS]

00:40:42   standoffish John Glenn his wife are [TS]

00:40:45   obviously you know data they think [TS]

00:40:46   they're better than the rest of them [TS]

00:40:47   they don't want to be seen with him you [TS]

00:40:49   can see where that story is going and [TS]

00:40:51   then you cut to them and in the hotel [TS]

00:40:53   room afterward and she has a terrible [TS]

00:40:54   stutter and she can't shoot enemies end [TS]

00:40:57   is shy and she wasn't being standoffish [TS]

00:41:00   at all it's a completely different story [TS]

00:41:02   than the one that you're led to think is [TS]

00:41:05   going on I just I thought that was [TS]

00:41:07   really a really nice double back on the [TS]

00:41:09   story there i was amused to find out [TS]

00:41:11   that actress is zoe and emily deschanel [TS]

00:41:13   his mother [TS]

00:41:14   Wow [TS]

00:41:14   all yes and the wife of the [TS]

00:41:16   cinematographer yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah [TS]

00:41:18   national yeah the other thing about that [TS]

00:41:20   scene is that it it shows and we see [TS]

00:41:22   this later on as well that John Glenn is [TS]

00:41:25   not playing the super good guy he really [TS]

00:41:28   is he really in the sky [TS]

00:41:30   yeah when he's unguarded when he's just [TS]

00:41:32   with his wife he is just like he is when [TS]

00:41:35   he's with the other guys yeah and just [TS]

00:41:37   like he was in the press conference [TS]

00:41:39   hey Stephen and I talked about space a [TS]

00:41:41   lot and on our podcast and I was [TS]

00:41:44   thinking of SpaceX in the next section [TS]

00:41:47   of scenes because there's a really nice [TS]

00:41:49   montage of lots of rockets exploding [TS]

00:41:52   spent literally uh hey [TS]

00:41:56   and it's this is a reminder hey you guys [TS]

00:41:58   are supposed to be writing this and it's [TS]

00:42:00   just I mean it looks like it'sit's [TS]

00:42:01   archival footage which they were able to [TS]

00:42:03   do of every rocket just blowing up and [TS]

00:42:06   occasionally a you know in the [TS]

00:42:07   scientists pressing the buttons to [TS]

00:42:09   launch things and then watching and then [TS]

00:42:10   one the one first off there's the ones [TS]

00:42:12   that just light and then just go down [TS]

00:42:14   which are so sad and then the ones that [TS]

00:42:16   could do is the one that goes off and [TS]

00:42:17   start veering off course they have to [TS]

00:42:18   blow it up and then there's the one that [TS]

00:42:20   gets up there and they're like yeah I [TS]

00:42:21   got oh now it is exploded in the air [TS]

00:42:24   it's just an amusing set of like for her [TS]

00:42:27   or for the one where the only thing that [TS]

00:42:29   happens is like nothing happens then [TS]

00:42:30   they cut to the very very top and just [TS]

00:42:32   like the present the periscope is bad [TS]

00:42:36   news dad what Dad a lot of trouble with [TS]

00:42:38   those early rockets and you know they [TS]

00:42:41   moved from suborbital gangway had [TS]

00:42:44   suborbital to actual orbital flights and [TS]

00:42:46   that they increase the size of the [TS]

00:42:48   rocket and those were even more [TS]

00:42:51   failure-prone that's what they said to [TS]

00:42:52   John Glenn right is what is like where [TS]

00:42:54   you know those Rockets they're not we [TS]

00:42:56   have good luck buddy [TS]

00:42:57   I like that they use how they use it in [TS]

00:43:00   the movie [TS]

00:43:01   I mean they're continue to drive home [TS]

00:43:03   that these guys do crazy dangerous [TS]

00:43:05   things for a living but it's it's also [TS]

00:43:08   an opportunity for them to to band [TS]

00:43:10   together and and say you know there's [TS]

00:43:12   there's that scene on a little while [TS]

00:43:14   where they confront some of the [TS]

00:43:16   engineers and you can kind of see some [TS]

00:43:17   of that brewing is are saying they're [TS]

00:43:19   watching the rockets explode they sort [TS]

00:43:20   of steroid disbelief and that you can [TS]

00:43:22   see frustration growing in the group and [TS]

00:43:25   I think that's a nice [TS]

00:43:26   it's a nice picture i just really like [TS]

00:43:28   the one guy who has to press the launch [TS]

00:43:29   button everything everytime jittery [TS]

00:43:31   German man's access it yeah every day [TS]

00:43:34   that's all done by computers like no [TS]

00:43:36   human touches anything but then it's [TS]

00:43:37   like the guy with the guys sneezes and [TS]

00:43:39   then hit like a second later something [TS]

00:43:41   something bad happened [TS]

00:43:42   no one knows yeah that's how they [TS]

00:43:43   screwed up all those earlier that you [TS]

00:43:45   have allergies get out and press the [TS]

00:43:47   yellow but not that's the explosion five [TS]

00:43:49   years but lunch not long i read an [TS]

00:43:53   article in there in space that looking [TS]

00:43:54   to deepen dorado that was really [TS]

00:43:57   interesting it's a positive that one of [TS]

00:43:58   the reasons why the Russians had such a [TS]

00:44:00   headstart was because their atomic [TS]

00:44:02   weapons were really really bad and ours [TS]

00:44:04   were really really good [TS]

00:44:06   so as a result because ours were really [TS]

00:44:08   really good [TS]

00:44:09   they were small and like and reliable [TS]

00:44:12   which meant that they developed really [TS]

00:44:14   were really small not terribly powerful [TS]

00:44:16   rockets in order to deliver them rest [TS]

00:44:19   the Russians there's were big huge heavy [TS]

00:44:21   and clumsy so they needed big heavy [TS]

00:44:23   rockets which were already able to [TS]

00:44:25   launch an actual human into space that's [TS]

00:44:27   how big paper and because they were so [TS]

00:44:30   that such unreliable weapons they knew [TS]

00:44:31   that if we want one of these to take up [TS]

00:44:34   new york we're going to have to fire [TS]

00:44:36   like 80 of them so we're gonna have like [TS]

00:44:38   maybe learn how to manufacture [TS]

00:44:39   manufacturer manufacturer mins as many [TS]

00:44:41   copies as possible and so it was that [TS]

00:44:44   was why they were able to do Sputnik [TS]

00:44:46   first that's why they're able to do the [TS]

00:44:47   parents flight first because they were [TS]

00:44:49   already building it turns out that if [TS]

00:44:51   you build a rocket for a crappy nuclear [TS]

00:44:53   warhead your building 14 really good man [TS]

00:44:55   space program the there's a bunch of [TS]

00:44:58   thumb that we get some beach scenes [TS]

00:45:00   which is it's just fun that I haven't [TS]

00:45:03   been to Kennedy Space Center a couple of [TS]

00:45:05   times and I stayed i'm on Cocoa Beach at [TS]

00:45:08   one point which Harris talks about a [TS]

00:45:10   little bit it's just to give you a [TS]

00:45:12   little flavor of especially in this like [TS]

00:45:14   the sixties in in florida and those [TS]

00:45:17   sleepy beach towns that suddenly were in [TS]

00:45:20   the center of the space thing is pretty [TS]

00:45:21   cool and there's this set piece that we [TS]

00:45:23   go to a couple of times there's a bar [TS]

00:45:25   with a with a swimming-pool window [TS]

00:45:28   behind the bar and and that's where we [TS]

00:45:31   go next where you know Alan Shepards [TS]

00:45:33   justly just loves it Sullivan is [TS]

00:45:36   laughing and laughing but that the point [TS]

00:45:38   of the scene is largely the groupie [TS]

00:45:40   is there or the other referred to as the [TS]

00:45:41   cookies at one point the woman who says [TS]

00:45:44   four down three to go [TS]

00:45:45   suggesting she slept with four of the [TS]

00:45:47   seven mercury astronauts which leads [TS]

00:45:50   into John Glenn kind of kind of [TS]

00:45:55   lecturing everybody else all of the [TS]

00:45:57   other ones about the plane around that's [TS]

00:45:59   going on and uh and and the response is [TS]

00:46:04   strange because so he's basically saying [TS]

00:46:06   look we we are this is PR and if it gets [TS]

00:46:09   around that we're awful tomcatting guys [TS]

00:46:13   then it's going to reflect badly on the [TS]

00:46:14   program and on the on the country the [TS]

00:46:17   response is is interesting rhetorically [TS]

00:46:20   because he kind of doesn't address that [TS]

00:46:22   issue at all he just got pivots and as [TS]

00:46:25   it is it Shepherd just pivots into a [TS]

00:46:28   completely other issue which is the fact [TS]

00:46:30   that that the their job is so simple [TS]

00:46:34   that a monkey could do it yet including [TS]

00:46:36   the line and get ready for the bleeping [TS]

00:46:38   out part because I'll bleep is out the [TS]

00:46:40   the classic line that made me laugh so [TS]

00:46:42   hard which is the issue hearing the [TS]

00:46:45   issue here is monkey and yes well I [TS]

00:46:49   can't argue with that logic the issue [TS]

00:46:51   here is monkey [TS]

00:46:52   of course it is of course it is which is [TS]

00:46:55   not wrong because this is a famous [TS]

00:46:57   true-to-life complained that the [TS]

00:46:59   astronauts had that although they were [TS]

00:47:01   trained test pilots who were brought in [TS]

00:47:03   to do this the job did not require any [TS]

00:47:06   of their skill at all it was a capsule [TS]

00:47:10   essentially made for a monkey [TS]

00:47:11   it's automatic and that leads to the the [TS]

00:47:15   real unification after this kind of ugly [TS]

00:47:17   scene with John plan which is the [TS]

00:47:18   astronaut rebellion where they basically [TS]

00:47:20   tell the designers you're going to give [TS]

00:47:23   us a window and you're going to give us [TS]

00:47:24   an escape hatch and you're going to give [TS]

00:47:26   us some controls because we are pilots [TS]

00:47:29   not monkeys for chimps chimps are [TS]

00:47:32   monkeys but forgive them they're just [TS]

00:47:34   pilots the IC contempt with which the [TS]

00:47:37   engineers just address it is not kitsch [TS]

00:47:39   still there is nobody will call it a [TS]

00:47:42   spacecraft not a capsule the spacecraft [TS]

00:47:45   spacecraft cas haha before that [TS]

00:47:49   confrontation and Jason I'm surprised [TS]

00:47:51   that you did not [TS]

00:47:52   this up given that this is an eighties [TS]

00:47:55   movie there's a montage [TS]

00:47:57   oh yeah and it's the montage of the [TS]

00:47:59   astronauts going through their clicking [TS]

00:48:01   buttons and flipping things around is [TS]

00:48:03   there going I am centrifugal flipping up [TS]

00:48:05   and down and then of course the the [TS]

00:48:06   parallel montage of the monkeys doing [TS]

00:48:09   exactly this yes that's true that's true [TS]

00:48:11   very very well done baby the soundtrack [TS]

00:48:14   by the way the score here won the [TS]

00:48:17   Academy Award and it is very eighties it [TS]

00:48:20   is and it's all over the place in the [TS]

00:48:22   writers there there's a bunch of stuff [TS]

00:48:24   up top that's very very synthesizer [TS]

00:48:26   heavy as it goes on I felt like it got a [TS]

00:48:29   little more orchestral and then later on [TS]

00:48:31   I had this in my notes when I think when [TS]

00:48:34   goes up they are using Gustav Holst's [TS]

00:48:37   the planets [TS]

00:48:38   yeah and so like it kind of jumps around [TS]

00:48:40   but yeah they're definitely when the [TS]

00:48:43   acre scenes in the beginning almost [TS]

00:48:44   sound like Top Gun like that that's the [TS]

00:48:47   level of since we've got we're one step [TS]

00:48:49   from the danger zone there's an [TS]

00:48:51   interesting thing about eighties movies [TS]

00:48:52   because a couple weeks back i was [TS]

00:48:54   watching chariots of fire which for my [TS]

00:48:56   money [TS]

00:48:57   another another under-rated eighties [TS]

00:48:59   movie but that is again likely be [TS]

00:49:01   jealous [TS]

00:49:02   yeah it is it is 70 20-something years [TS]

00:49:05   been jealous honest casio keyboard going [TS]

00:49:07   for booty [TS]

00:49:09   yep it's strangely works and it works in [TS]

00:49:12   this movie I mentioned Hoosiers earlier [TS]

00:49:14   that is a movie where the the [TS]

00:49:16   synthesized keyboard score does not work [TS]

00:49:19   but uh get back to the content [TS]

00:49:23   yeah don't count yeah and he was not the [TS]

00:49:25   original choice i believe it [TS]

00:49:26   this is in the wire dumb oral history or [TS]

00:49:30   it might be in IMDb trivia i don't know [TS]

00:49:33   i have two sources of information on [TS]

00:49:35   Papa the original a guy who was [TS]

00:49:38   commissioned to do the soundtrack left [TS]

00:49:42   the movie and a half after talking to [TS]

00:49:44   Philip Kaufman this is a theme with many [TS]

00:49:47   of Philip Kaufman movies but Philip [TS]

00:49:49   Kaufman said I want the music to sound [TS]

00:49:51   like you're in a desert and you step in [TS]

00:49:52   a cactus only the cactus grows around us [TS]

00:49:56   you step in it [TS]

00:49:57   the guy said yeah we're done here and [TS]

00:49:58   now that's out bill conti came and and [TS]

00:50:01   oh man I love that soundtrack so much we [TS]

00:50:04   have some training montages [TS]

00:50:06   and other interesting things throughout [TS]

00:50:08   the trip isn't anything eighties movie [TS]

00:50:09   you need a montage and the whole thing [TS]

00:50:11   here is the issue is monkey are they men [TS]

00:50:13   or are they just monkeys ride the highly [TS]

00:50:16   trained monkeys riding in an automated [TS]

00:50:18   space capsule but again this is the fam [TS]

00:50:20   this is one of those good moments where [TS]

00:50:22   they turn there's another one later [TS]

00:50:24   where they basically it they were [TS]

00:50:27   desperate to get in to the program and [TS]

00:50:31   they would do anything it like including [TS]

00:50:33   drive to San Diego and get their [TS]

00:50:35   estranged wife and have them come back [TS]

00:50:36   and pretend to be together to get in the [TS]

00:50:38   program but now with all that PR their [TS]

00:50:40   stars and they feel like if they band [TS]

00:50:43   together they can make changes and it's [TS]

00:50:46   fun it's fun to see that happen where [TS]

00:50:49   the balance of power has now shifted to [TS]

00:50:50   the mercury seven and that happened that [TS]

00:50:53   actually really happened [TS]

00:50:54   the chimp is shot into space Jim came [TS]

00:50:58   first American ship in space ham we see [TS]

00:51:01   but this is another great scene with the [TS]

00:51:02   Greek chorus of the press we're all you [TS]

00:51:05   see are these arms and legs and cameras [TS]

00:51:07   flailing around one leg in one big dog [TS]

00:51:09   like but that's right basically probably [TS]

00:51:11   500 and you have the one spokesperson we [TS]

00:51:14   get slides but you never see them except [TS]

00:51:16   for their this one big knot of this [TS]

00:51:18   grasping grasping hands that the guys [TS]

00:51:22   you play the press corps were a San [TS]

00:51:23   Francisco improv troupe on and their [TS]

00:51:27   other big credit that a lot of them are [TS]

00:51:29   in his Howard the Duck and that is got [TS]

00:51:32   that is the steepest decline in movies [TS]

00:51:37   I don't know that that is like a [TS]

00:51:38   straight line down that is not even hate [TS]

00:51:40   you can even measure the slope there [TS]

00:51:42   just ripped straight down [TS]

00:51:44   mhm cheap shot into space meanwhile [TS]

00:51:48   Chuck Yeager's have it maybe have some [TS]

00:51:49   regrets about not being part of all the [TS]

00:51:51   excitement we got Chuck Yeager cut away [TS]

00:51:52   but we have to move on because they [TS]

00:51:55   gotta man up there it's gerrin we know [TS]

00:51:58   sit down [TS]

00:51:59   yeah more news from from Russia and so [TS]

00:52:04   they and they try to spin it which is [TS]

00:52:06   funny and like oh well you know be [TS]

00:52:08   forthright gracious you know all those [TS]

00:52:10   things and then the one guy the [TS]

00:52:13   government guys like well who's gonna be [TS]

00:52:14   the first free man in space huh [TS]

00:52:17   it's like not doesn't really work at [TS]

00:52:18   Glenn says I'm tired [TS]

00:52:19   and forthright gracious we need to get [TS]

00:52:21   we need to get going and i laughed a [TS]

00:52:24   little bit because basically the [TS]

00:52:26   response here is oh okay yeah let's do [TS]

00:52:29   it like okay where was a pep talk by the [TS]

00:52:31   astronauts all that was required to move [TS]

00:52:34   ahead then goes like that yeah [TS]

00:52:36   hey Bella that then John Glenn could now [TS]

00:52:39   there's no that's not the mercury seven [TS]

00:52:41   like really really tight as a group [TS]

00:52:43   John Glenn was a joke yeah but but we [TS]

00:52:46   can't say the word the blanking yes [TS]

00:52:49   absolutely yes [TS]

00:52:50   and so it's cut to all right we're gonna [TS]

00:52:53   do it and and an astronaut is going to [TS]

00:52:55   be they've been keeping a close to the [TS]

00:52:57   best but who's it gonna be [TS]

00:52:58   and it's a talent shepherd and we get [TS]

00:53:01   another one of those nice little moments [TS]

00:53:02   where even though they these astronauts [TS]

00:53:04   are are pitted against each other they [TS]

00:53:06   also have some respect for each other [TS]

00:53:07   because Shepherds god there's a sign [TS]

00:53:10   that joke sign that Glenn leaves in the [TS]

00:53:13   in in the in the capsule and he says [TS]

00:53:18   it's not funny but I you know but I [TS]

00:53:19   appreciate it and Glenn says to him by a [TS]

00:53:22   con Dios jose as pair loading them in [TS]

00:53:25   the capsule which is a it's pretty great [TS]

00:53:27   and then Alan Shepard blasted space no [TS]

00:53:30   actually and then Alan Shepard sits in [TS]

00:53:32   the capsule for hours baking somebody at [TS]

00:53:35   back begging a Mission Control to let [TS]

00:53:38   him pee that's what happens next glamour [TS]

00:53:41   in the space burger glamour slice [TS]

00:53:43   cutting to another montage looks like [TS]

00:53:45   coffee being poured out that my god that [TS]

00:53:49   is totally insulated trillion bits of [TS]

00:53:51   anything right is it brilliant eerie i [TS]

00:53:53   think it kills the wedding a little [TS]

00:53:55   tight on the same movie as the to [TS]

00:53:57   recruiters yai chai the hoses down of [TS]

00:54:00   the launchpad the thing that I really [TS]

00:54:03   like here is the cut away to where we're [TS]

00:54:07   talking to all the wives are together [TS]

00:54:08   and that therefore media frenzy outside [TS]

00:54:10   the house and all of that and and alan [TS]

00:54:13   shepard's wife says he must have four [TS]

00:54:15   cups of coffee before you went to work [TS]

00:54:16   that morning that killed me that was [TS]

00:54:19   great line that was really great we I i [TS]

00:54:21   neglected to mention early on the the [TS]

00:54:24   conversation with the wives sitting [TS]

00:54:25   around the line that I like which again [TS]

00:54:27   probably has to be believed to sometimes [TS]

00:54:29   men can be such [TS]

00:54:31   yeah well I didn't even mention since [TS]

00:54:34   we're bleeping things I really love that [TS]

00:54:36   over an open channel the first thing [TS]

00:54:38   that Alan Shepard says in the in the [TS]

00:54:39   capsule is dear lord please don't let me [TS]

00:54:42   pick up what was that what was that I [TS]

00:54:45   mean I everything is a-ok and I didn't [TS]

00:54:47   quite hear you there [TS]

00:54:48   their fruit repeat that everything is [TS]

00:54:51   a-okay [TS]

00:54:52   yeah they finally let him pee in this [TS]

00:54:55   space suit though so that's good and he [TS]

00:54:57   and he is the most it makes the most [TS]

00:55:00   relieved sounds you will ever hear [TS]

00:55:02   unfortunate racist jerk as well [TS]

00:55:04   yeah well yes well this is true again [TS]

00:55:07   consistent with his behavior up to this [TS]

00:55:10   point actually true voice I've always [TS]

00:55:13   wanted to know if in the control room [TS]

00:55:14   they really did have like a light bulb [TS]

00:55:17   studded diagram of the astronaut in his [TS]

00:55:20   chair so they could trace where the [TS]

00:55:22   urine was going up and throw it up and [TS]

00:55:24   down his legs and his back if so I want [TS]

00:55:27   a copy of that schematic so i can have [TS]

00:55:29   that thing I want to make a version for [TS]

00:55:31   myself I was a little disappointed when [TS]

00:55:33   he after he comes on board the ship [TS]

00:55:35   after they go pull plug him out of the [TS]

00:55:37   capsule when they draw the outlines on [TS]

00:55:39   his feet i really want him to walk away [TS]

00:55:41   and leave like soggy but Prince to drip [TS]

00:55:44   all over tonight I I was definitely [TS]

00:55:47   expecting that everybody just to back [TS]

00:55:49   off after opening the yeah well yeah [TS]

00:55:51   yeah [TS]

00:55:53   the smell so this is one of those [TS]

00:55:55   moments like earlier where was like hey [TS]

00:55:57   let's let's let's launch yeah let's do [TS]

00:55:59   it where it's almost the enthusiasm of [TS]

00:56:02   the astronauts that cause things to [TS]

00:56:03   happen in the space program because it [TS]

00:56:04   like let's light this candle [TS]

00:56:06   yes let's do it okay all ten nine eight [TS]

00:56:10   seven with Ricky immediately count down [TS]

00:56:12   from ten press the button I'm a lot [TS]

00:56:15   calmer than you people [TS]

00:56:16   why do you solve your little problem [TS]

00:56:17   like this kinda boom [TS]

00:56:19   so that is right all right like the [TS]

00:56:21   candidate so they do and he he launches [TS]

00:56:24   and and in reentry there's a lot of [TS]

00:56:26   shaking and I had that moment of like Oh [TS]

00:56:27   see you've been through the high Jesus [TS]

00:56:29   shaking because you were you made all [TS]

00:56:31   those ridiculous training tests so [TS]

00:56:33   that's what that's all good and he gets [TS]

00:56:36   to he gets to listen to a band play and [TS]

00:56:39   go to the White House and cut meat cut [TS]

00:56:42   immediately from like [TS]

00:56:43   you look it's possible he's about to die [TS]

00:56:45   because no American has ever done this [TS]

00:56:47   before and then to book [TS]

00:56:48   ok as soon as you survive return to [TS]

00:56:51   Earth you are now unto a god and [TS]

00:56:53   marching and printer tape parade go to [TS]

00:56:56   the White House to be as it's going to [TS]

00:56:57   be commemorated your spliced into [TS]

00:56:58   archival footage and instead the German [TS]

00:57:01   sing some songs that i like that cut [TS]

00:57:03   away that meanwhile German rocket [TS]

00:57:04   scientists are very happy to sing a song [TS]

00:57:07   yeah you know you when you will go into [TS]

00:57:09   space the everything that you brought [TS]

00:57:11   space with you has value which is why [TS]

00:57:12   Gus Grissom has a whole merchandising [TS]

00:57:14   plan to bring a bunch of little objects [TS]

00:57:16   into space and then sell them upon his [TS]

00:57:19   return to Earth but gus grissom's [TS]

00:57:22   mission doesn't go so well [TS]

00:57:26   no screws the pooch does in the movie [TS]

00:57:28   heat in the movie does i think i think [TS]

00:57:30   the historical record would suggest [TS]

00:57:32   designer here at controversy [TS]

00:57:34   yeah but the book was very hard on him [TS]

00:57:36   as well right now the movie was [TS]

00:57:38   consistent with the book and I think [TS]

00:57:39   time I think you know knowledge has sort [TS]

00:57:42   of shifted since the late seventies when [TS]

00:57:45   the book was written at the time nobody [TS]

00:57:47   inside NASA seriously believe that he [TS]

00:57:50   had full pull the hatch himself [TS]

00:57:52   yeah nobody a matter of fact that the [TS]

00:57:53   very very next flight Wally schirra did [TS]

00:57:56   something that I'm not sure if it was [TS]

00:57:57   even part of the flight plan but he [TS]

00:57:59   intended after the after everything was [TS]

00:58:01   secure everything was safe after [TS]

00:58:02   splashdown he intentionally manually a [TS]

00:58:05   blue the hatch just to show that ok here [TS]

00:58:08   are the bruises here is that if the [TS]

00:58:09   damage that will be on your arm if you [TS]

00:58:11   actually push that button and so given [TS]

00:58:14   that given the complexity of this thing [TS]

00:58:16   were relays for tripping just on their [TS]

00:58:18   own because of balls of solder that were [TS]

00:58:20   just rattling around making contact out [TS]

00:58:22   that it should be on the fifth anybody's [TS]

00:58:24   getting some of their history from this [TS]

00:58:25   nobody inside NASA seriously believe [TS]

00:58:29   that it was anything other than [TS]

00:58:30   technical malfunction and when they [TS]

00:58:32   finally pulled the pull the the capsule [TS]

00:58:35   Liberty Bell 7 from the bottom of the [TS]

00:58:37   ocean now there's a theory that maybe [TS]

00:58:39   the housing around the hatch is what [TS]

00:58:43   failed not not explosive bolts so just [TS]

00:58:46   dissed this way yourself of any idea [TS]

00:58:48   that he might have actually screw [TS]

00:58:50   you can also see it in his career which [TS]

00:58:52   is that he right with me was in the [TS]

00:58:55   Apollo program and if he had not died [TS]

00:58:57   number one seed nepali yeah he had not [TS]

00:58:59   died in the Apollo one accident he would [TS]

00:59:01   almost certainly have been the first man [TS]

00:59:03   on the moon so bright in his career [TS]

00:59:05   wizard and there's a reason there's a [TS]

00:59:07   reason why scott Carpenter did not have [TS]

00:59:09   reached chose to retire after his one [TS]

00:59:12   flight there's reasons why other people [TS]

00:59:13   other astronauts seriously chose to [TS]

00:59:15   retire after their first flights it was [TS]

00:59:17   because he leaves director investment [TS]

00:59:19   operations made it really clear that ok [TS]

00:59:22   there is no way we are going to let you [TS]

00:59:25   anywhere near space right anytime so if [TS]

00:59:28   it's screwed up he would not a float [TS]

00:59:30   again [TS]

00:59:30   yeah this is the the dissidents a [TS]

00:59:33   section of the movie without where it [TS]

00:59:36   really deviates from reality to drive [TS]

00:59:39   home the point wants to make about again [TS]

00:59:41   myth baking and where's my tape parade [TS]

00:59:44   exactly a full refrigerator [TS]

00:59:47   no Jackie which i like i like her [TS]

00:59:48   outrage there because it's the [TS]

00:59:50   implication is we got you stuff so you [TS]

00:59:52   can cook meals in this thing she's like [TS]

00:59:53   what it want to cook meals what are you [TS]

00:59:56   asking me to do here she wants to meet [TS]

00:59:57   Jackie she doesn't want to be missing [TS]

00:59:57   Jackie she doesn't want to be missing [TS]

01:00:00   squirming hatch blower yeah this episode [TS]

01:00:04   of the incomparable does not have a [TS]

01:00:05   sponsor in fact many of our purposes [TS]

01:00:07   don't have sponsors and the we do this [TS]

01:00:09   out of love and we appreciate your [TS]

01:00:11   support if you would like to support the [TS]

01:00:13   uncomfortable you can become a member [TS]

01:00:15   go to the incomparable calm / members [TS]

01:00:18   and sign up we've got three different [TS]

01:00:20   plans starting at five dollars a month [TS]

01:00:22   there's also an annual plan your support [TS]

01:00:25   can go to all the shows on the [TS]

01:00:27   incomparable network that you listen to [TS]

01:00:29   so if you listen to more than just this [TS]

01:00:31   show you can check boxes for the other [TS]

01:00:33   shows and support them to or you can [TS]

01:00:34   just support the show whatever you like [TS]

01:00:36   to do there are a lot of great bonuses [TS]

01:00:38   that come with incomparable membership [TS]

01:00:40   you get access to a bunch of special [TS]

01:00:42   feeds there's a bootleg feed that posts [TS]

01:00:45   are episodes live recordings as soon as [TS]

01:00:47   they're done being recorded [TS]

01:00:49   that's where our bonus material [TS]

01:00:51   including bonus tracks ends up these [TS]

01:00:53   days and there will be a bunch of [TS]

01:00:55   members only specials that will be [TS]

01:00:57   producing early next year and depending [TS]

01:00:59   on your level you may also get some [TS]

01:01:00   stuff in the mail so go to the [TS]

01:01:02   incomparable calm / members if you're [TS]

01:01:04   not already a member and show your [TS]

01:01:06   support for the show and thank you very [TS]

01:01:08   much for listening [TS]

01:01:09   meanwhile back in the godforsaken desert [TS]

01:01:12   in California the pilot test pilots are [TS]

01:01:15   watching all the coverage and lamenting [TS]

01:01:16   the fact that these astronauts are [TS]

01:01:18   really not doing anything more than the [TS]

01:01:20   monkeys would and they're kind of [TS]

01:01:23   defended by Chuck Yeager which is a kind [TS]

01:01:24   of a nice a nice moment when are in our [TS]

01:01:28   Chuck Yeager check in and then the bar [TS]

01:01:30   burns down [TS]

01:01:30   alas jungle in gets the call the [TS]

01:01:34   Russians are orbiting so they're going [TS]

01:01:36   to scrap the suborbitals and go for [TS]

01:01:38   orbit with the the sort of untapped not [TS]

01:01:43   well tested that's not been tested John [TS]

01:01:45   no John we haven't had a lot of luck [TS]

01:01:47   with the Atlas yeah but they're gonna [TS]

01:01:49   they're gonna do it and and so LBJ [TS]

01:01:53   really wants to come into John Glenn's [TS]

01:01:55   house and talk to his wife [TS]

01:01:57   there's lots of colorful LBJ dialogue [TS]

01:01:59   here too i don't know if the LBJ is any [TS]

01:02:02   better than the eyes Eisenhower Phil [TS]

01:02:04   what do you think [TS]

01:02:05   no that's just because since then we've [TS]

01:02:09   had bryan cranston doing LBJ and that [TS]

01:02:11   is gonna that's gonna knock you back a [TS]

01:02:14   picture to this LBJ feels just like a [TS]

01:02:16   generic Texan in a limited it's [TS]

01:02:18   basically just look what I brought you [TS]

01:02:21   yeah it's it's not great right now if [TS]

01:02:24   you get the back-and-forth with a guy [TS]

01:02:25   gets sent by LBJ is likely the vice [TS]

01:02:27   president wants to come in no tell him [TS]

01:02:29   know what do you mean no [TS]

01:02:30   go get it and he goes back and forth [TS]

01:02:32   then finally they get I did John Glenn [TS]

01:02:34   on the line with his wife and and mr. [TS]

01:02:37   you know head of the astronaut program [TS]

01:02:38   is like giving in the eye that he has to [TS]

01:02:41   let the vice president and he just tells [TS]

01:02:43   his wife [TS]

01:02:43   they're not coming in you tell them the [TS]

01:02:45   John Glenn the astronaut told you it was [TS]

01:02:47   okay and he hangs up the phone [TS]

01:02:49   it's just like I another great moment [TS]

01:02:50   was like well what if i change the [TS]

01:02:52   assignments and and you won't get a [TS]

01:02:54   flight and again they all pulled [TS]

01:02:57   together [TS]

01:02:57   who you gonna get we're gonna get ya a [TS]

01:03:00   billion i like that scene [TS]

01:03:02   not only that but all the astronauts [TS]

01:03:04   wives supporting this is glenn right now [TS]

01:03:06   they know they know we're now she's part [TS]

01:03:08   of the group no porn recollection of [TS]

01:03:10   with and yep look there protecting her [TS]

01:03:12   as well that's a beautiful thing yeah [TS]

01:03:13   and capped off by the by the time on [TS]

01:03:16   moju stone LBJ's limo quaking in writing [TS]

01:03:20   it was that low me so I feel like I mean [TS]

01:03:25   as Glenn as Glenn gets ready for launch [TS]

01:03:28   I feel like we move into the last phase [TS]

01:03:31   of the movie and the end and we get a [TS]

01:03:34   few different elements that get [TS]

01:03:35   introduced at this point [TS]

01:03:36   Gordon Cooper goes to Australia where [TS]

01:03:39   where he's going to be good because we [TS]

01:03:41   don't have like a relay network setup [TS]

01:03:44   yet so we're literally sending an [TS]

01:03:45   astronaut to Australia so that we can [TS]

01:03:47   get some global coverage as as Glenn is [TS]

01:03:50   orbiting the Earth and he he's out in [TS]

01:03:52   the outback and there are a bunch of [TS]

01:03:53   Australian Aborigines there and he talks [TS]

01:03:56   to them about space and they pointed [TS]

01:03:58   that sort of Elder and say well he knows [TS]

01:04:00   all about space from looking up at the [TS]

01:04:03   stars and his wisdom and all that which [TS]

01:04:05   is it's kinda interesting that's an [TS]

01:04:07   interesting moment and and we come back [TS]

01:04:10   there a couple of times as he talks to [TS]

01:04:12   him and and everybody's looking up at [TS]

01:04:15   the stars missing horsham [TS]

01:04:17   sorry this is they really this is just [TS]

01:04:21   garbage and it's hippie trippy know [TS]

01:04:24   maybe we're all made of stars yeah maybe [TS]

01:04:26   we are just get back to the space dude [TS]

01:04:30   and i like this movie i know i know it's [TS]

01:04:34   a lie I thought I pushed a little too [TS]

01:04:36   far but uh but uh the there's also some [TS]

01:04:40   drama here because there's a question [TS]

01:04:41   about if the heat heat shield is going [TS]

01:04:43   to remain on and there's a question of [TS]

01:04:45   what what they tell him which steven [TS]

01:04:48   when we watch Apollo 13 for for the [TS]

01:04:50   liftoff special i was reminded that here [TS]

01:04:53   that this is the debate which is if [TS]

01:04:54   there's nothing they can do [TS]

01:04:56   do we tell them that there's a [TS]

01:04:57   possibility that something has gone [TS]

01:04:59   wrong man in the case of John Glenn [TS]

01:05:01   there is something he can do and they [TS]

01:05:03   tell them to do it without telling him [TS]

01:05:04   why and you get it [TS]

01:05:05   he's kind of got that like okay like he [TS]

01:05:08   knows something is going on was like no [TS]

01:05:10   we're gonna we're gonna give you control [TS]

01:05:11   and we're going to leave those those [TS]

01:05:14   there and not eject them and and that's [TS]

01:05:17   a nice back-and-forth between yeah [TS]

01:05:19   between the astronaut on the ground and [TS]

01:05:21   the astronauts on occasion Scotland [TS]

01:05:23   being at Ascot colonialist which is [TS]

01:05:25   there debating it yeah he's a pilot you [TS]

01:05:27   tell the condition of his craft [TS]

01:05:29   yeah which goes back to the whole test [TS]

01:05:31   pilot thing right this is there this is [TS]

01:05:32   the pride of their professionalism here [TS]

01:05:34   that you know they they they need to [TS]

01:05:37   know impact test pilots they need to [TS]

01:05:39   know what's wrong and what's the status [TS]

01:05:40   of their other craft is that's part of [TS]

01:05:42   the deal but they kind of don't tell [TS]

01:05:44   them anyway they kind of still just say [TS]

01:05:45   well let's just leave that on and see [TS]

01:05:47   what happens yeah [TS]

01:05:48   and of course the first thing is we go [TS]

01:05:49   he changes immediately from a wide you [TS]

01:05:51   do you suppose these little gadgets [TS]

01:05:52   might be alive to the steely-eyed [TS]

01:05:55   missile man professional alright I'm [TS]

01:05:57   going to adjust my attitude to the pic [TS]

01:05:58   so to change my angle to be stupid XYZ [TS]

01:06:01   XYZ math math like okie dokie alright [TS]

01:06:04   oh yeah least at least at least we'll be [TS]

01:06:06   busy while he dies so there's a there's [TS]

01:06:08   a dramatic I and this is what this movie [TS]

01:06:10   is if it's got a traditional it doesn't [TS]

01:06:13   have a traditional structure but if it [TS]

01:06:14   did this is would be the the moment of [TS]

01:06:16   climax in the movie this is the fraud [TS]

01:06:19   reentry of the key it speaking speaking [TS]

01:06:22   of climax [TS]

01:06:24   yeah well so what mall while he's well [TS]

01:06:26   he's enduring like that now there is [TS]

01:06:28   that way he's at much [TS]

01:06:29   he's suffering more geez that then in a [TS]

01:06:32   conventional re-entry and shaking he [TS]

01:06:35   starts like humming mmm the marine him [TS]

01:06:38   and now and now back up back on the [TS]

01:06:42   radio gordo pass the laugh because he [TS]

01:06:45   remembers being in the men's room [TS]

01:06:47   yeah the stall next to him while they [TS]

01:06:50   were happy they had to produce a sample [TS]

01:06:52   sample during the test them and he was [TS]

01:06:54   also hit he has AE he tends to hum [TS]

01:06:57   during some types to pick stressful [TS]

01:07:00   magazine followed by masturbation [TS]

01:07:02   culminating in ejaculation huh so that's [TS]

01:07:06   the that's the exciting thing here it's [TS]

01:07:08   a front reentry but in the end you know [TS]

01:07:11   John Glenn gets a ticker-tape parade oh [TS]

01:07:13   yes he does [TS]

01:07:14   yes he does get a ticker-tape parade [TS]

01:07:17   meanwhile Chuck Yeager still flying [TS]

01:07:19   planes he's still out there still flying [TS]

01:07:22   planes just a reminder Chuck Yeager [TS]

01:07:25   still getting it done [TS]

01:07:26   still fly playing trying to set the [TS]

01:07:28   stupidest records in the the day we're [TS]

01:07:32   going to see how how far up we can fly [TS]

01:07:35   before we die horribly out don't get 300 [TS]

01:07:38   bucks a month will check in with Chuck [TS]

01:07:39   Yeager one more time and that's going to [TS]

01:07:41   be very interesting but first this is [TS]

01:07:42   sort of like in this interesting kind of [TS]

01:07:43   code of the movie [TS]

01:07:44   welcome to Houston everybody so they're [TS]

01:07:46   going to start the Space Center in [TS]

01:07:47   Houston everybody in houston was the [TS]

01:07:49   astronauts they gave him land they're [TS]

01:07:51   going to build them houses they're gonna [TS]

01:07:52   they're gonna give them furniture all of [TS]

01:07:55   these things because they're going to [TS]

01:07:56   end to this day you know Johnson named [TS]

01:07:59   after him [TS]

01:08:00   hi johnson space center is in Houston [TS]

01:08:03   liquid a bride [TS]

01:08:04   yeah great moment in here where dude [TS]

01:08:09   walks up to alan shepard and says which [TS]

01:08:11   ones Glenn he's the 1i want to meet [TS]

01:08:13   people in the worst first american in [TS]

01:08:15   space man come on [TS]

01:08:17   there are lots of people in ten-gallon [TS]

01:08:19   hats are so my note says so many cowboys [TS]

01:08:22   there a lot of cowboys in the same lot [TS]

01:08:24   apparently there are a lot of cowboys in [TS]

01:08:25   Texas it definitely feels like the whole [TS]

01:08:27   Texas seen could pivot very quickly into [TS]

01:08:30   some sort of cult gathering no pjs [TS]

01:08:32   called that all seems very intense here [TS]

01:08:35   what we get is another one of those [TS]

01:08:38   things that Phil probably hates because [TS]

01:08:39   it's kinda hippie-ish which is the [TS]

01:08:42   the ethereal feather kind of stuff is [TS]

01:08:47   kind of cross cut with the chuck yeager [TS]

01:08:52   the last Chucky acre bit where he takes [TS]

01:08:55   a jet out without authorization and they [TS]

01:08:58   asked them and they're like oh no I'm [TS]

01:08:59   sure he's got authorization and he [TS]

01:09:01   climbs because he's trying to push the [TS]

01:09:03   altitude of this jet to the limit and he [TS]

01:09:05   tried to get to the studio space yeah [TS]

01:09:08   and he and so I'm gonna throw you a [TS]

01:09:10   curveball here Jason I kind of like this [TS]

01:09:11   jective just I look at that look at you [TS]

01:09:14   my heart grew three three sizes so yes [TS]

01:09:17   the fan dancers and no two Australian [TS]

01:09:20   outback campfires is what you're saying [TS]

01:09:21   about it [TS]

01:09:22   yeah all right about fan dancers at [TS]

01:09:24   australian what I would love to see that [TS]

01:09:26   so he flies higher losses it has to [TS]

01:09:29   reject but this is yeah right i mean [TS]

01:09:30   this is the kind of combination of we [TS]

01:09:32   keep wondering about Chuck Yeager and [TS]

01:09:33   here he is he's trying to kinda set on a [TS]

01:09:37   simple level here he's trying to get to [TS]

01:09:38   space his own way right and it doesn't [TS]

01:09:41   really want because you have that nice i [TS]

01:09:42   do enjoy the shot of him get catching [TS]

01:09:45   sight of the stars right as you have [TS]

01:09:48   just about it at the top of his flight [TS]

01:09:50   there and it's like you you know this is [TS]

01:09:52   as close as he gets to get because he [TS]

01:09:53   wasn't picked their very Icarus like [TS]

01:09:55   it's moses being allowed to look at the [TS]

01:09:57   promised land but not actually getting [TS]

01:09:59   to to go there [TS]

01:10:00   maybe he just thinks if I high enough [TS]

01:10:02   maybe i can actually get this PS don't [TS]

01:10:04   do that it's bad it's bad i'm going to [TS]

01:10:06   work in the book the the parallel [TS]

01:10:09   program of flying planes into space was [TS]

01:10:13   talked about a lot and you know Kaufman [TS]

01:10:16   wisely cut it out of the movie because [TS]

01:10:17   it was already three hours long and [TS]

01:10:19   would have gone forever but this is one [TS]

01:10:21   of the little bits that you get that is [TS]

01:10:23   you know very prominent in the book is [TS]

01:10:25   the continuation of what's going on at [TS]

01:10:27   edwards and and this parallel program in [TS]

01:10:29   the end [TS]

01:10:30   uh-huh who is it David Clemen the is the [TS]

01:10:34   actor that you know there's also a it a [TS]

01:10:37   bit of dialogue where he talks about the [TS]

01:10:40   the money is being cut off the last of [TS]

01:10:43   its kind i guess because right now it's [TS]

01:10:45   ask that the astronauts are the only [TS]

01:10:46   tickets space it's going it's going to [TS]

01:10:48   go entirely toward the nasa thing and [TS]

01:10:51   that's just that's just a [TS]

01:10:53   small bit of what was a pretty big part [TS]

01:10:55   of the of the book you know which is [TS]

01:10:57   interesting too i was thinking about [TS]

01:10:58   from the perspective of today we're [TS]

01:11:01   often feels like the tables were flipped [TS]

01:11:03   again and you know a lot of money gets [TS]

01:11:05   devoted to you know certainly military [TS]

01:11:08   jet planes and less in mind many ways to [TS]

01:11:12   space exploration but you can't help but [TS]

01:11:15   look but really be impressed by just the [TS]

01:11:17   the contrast where you have this every [TS]

01:11:20   time they launched an astronaut into [TS]

01:11:21   space in the movie it's a point of here [TS]

01:11:24   are the number of people it takes just [TS]

01:11:25   to get him into the cockpit here the [TS]

01:11:28   number of people that are just standing [TS]

01:11:29   by to put out the fires here's number [TS]

01:11:31   people in the control room here is [TS]

01:11:33   number of people did with them and of [TS]

01:11:35   course when you have these planes that [TS]

01:11:36   is a man has put blocks to walk to the [TS]

01:11:41   plane climbs up the ladder who radios [TS]

01:11:44   the tower to ask okay is there anybody [TS]

01:11:46   in front of me they'll crash into what [TS]

01:11:48   to say [TS]

01:11:48   nope there isn't go ahead Godspeed and [TS]

01:11:51   they just simply take off as a one [TS]

01:11:53   person was controlling every aspect of [TS]

01:11:55   this flight there is no rest the [TS]

01:11:57   astronauts are in a position where if [TS]

01:11:58   something goes wrong they're there to [TS]

01:12:00   take over the controls and fix it [TS]

01:12:02   there is nothing that happens inside [TS]

01:12:04   that plane so of course its this lonely [TS]

01:12:06   project that the desert couldn't [TS]

01:12:09   possibly be a more evocative place for [TS]

01:12:11   the stuff to happen as it is going to be [TS]

01:12:13   Chuck Yeager he's the only person who [TS]

01:12:14   can get himself up there he's the only [TS]

01:12:15   person who can get himself back and so [TS]

01:12:17   when you can contrast that particularly [TS]

01:12:19   with these scenes in which it's not just [TS]

01:12:21   the the mercury seven but you've got [TS]

01:12:24   these hundreds if not a couple of [TS]

01:12:25   thousand people in this big this big [TS]

01:12:28   auditorium all these lights and all this [TS]

01:12:30   all these noises and you have this [TS]

01:12:31   moment where and maybe this is a little [TS]

01:12:33   bit of a hippie scene in which suddenly [TS]

01:12:35   like each one of the astronauts while [TS]

01:12:37   the Sally Rand was doing is doing the [TS]

01:12:39   dance seems to like here like this sound [TS]

01:12:42   that only the astronauts can hear and [TS]

01:12:45   get distracted while Yaeger is in [TS]

01:12:49   trouble or door or approaching the veil [TS]

01:12:51   of space saying that there is still that [TS]

01:12:53   one thing that's going to connect [TS]

01:12:54   everybody and then when and then when [TS]

01:12:57   the Gordo Cooper is getting that finds [TS]

01:13:01   that that twenty-eight cents worth of [TS]

01:13:02   maturity that he has is asked you know [TS]

01:13:05   who's the bed [TS]

01:13:05   hey Gordo friends the best pilot you [TS]

01:13:08   ever heard of [TS]

01:13:09   well I'll tell you that's the best [TS]

01:13:12   pilots or another just pictures on a [TS]

01:13:14   wall somewhere and actually the wall [TS]

01:13:17   isn't even there anymore and then he's [TS]

01:13:19   finally knocked out of his reverie best [TS]

01:13:21   part of the world [TS]

01:13:21   well you're looking at him yeah it's [TS]

01:13:24   it's a much bigger scene at perfectly [TS]

01:13:26   the right place in this movie that it [TS]

01:13:28   might have appeared in the page love it [TS]

01:13:30   yeah it's a the the I want to go back [TS]

01:13:33   for a second to what you said about that [TS]

01:13:35   Alan Shepard seen the the juxtaposition [TS]

01:13:37   there the the solitary again this is the [TS]

01:13:40   guy who is riding on a horse earlier [TS]

01:13:42   right this is the cowboy this is he is [TS]

01:13:44   out there all alone i doing all of that [TS]

01:13:47   like literally not authorize just put [TS]

01:13:49   this jet out there and says I'm going to [TS]

01:13:51   take off now and and you compare that to [TS]

01:13:53   everything that goes into that he has [TS]

01:13:55   freedom in a way that the astronauts [TS]

01:13:58   don't but they're the ones who get to go [TS]

01:13:59   into into space and and he doesn't get [TS]

01:14:01   to go there and I was going to mention [TS]

01:14:03   that scene with Gordon Cooper because [TS]

01:14:05   that's a really nice callback because [TS]

01:14:06   they make that joke earlier that you're [TS]

01:14:07   looking at him and he day and he gives [TS]

01:14:09   it that little speech like you know so [TS]

01:14:11   and he's interrupted by the press which [TS]

01:14:13   I actually kind of like like they don't [TS]

01:14:14   you know he's trying to give a speech [TS]

01:14:16   and they're louder I want the soundbite [TS]

01:14:17   yeah a little wide for exactly and back [TS]

01:14:20   and he finally gives it to him but at [TS]

01:14:21   this point it's like you know some of my [TS]

01:14:22   pictures on a wall some of them are in [TS]

01:14:24   this room and some of them are out there [TS]

01:14:26   doing what they always do when he's [TS]

01:14:27   saying you know it's the dead guys it's [TS]

01:14:29   the astronauts it's the test pilots were [TS]

01:14:31   still flying all those people are great [TS]

01:14:33   pilots and then he gives them what they [TS]

01:14:34   want which is no you're looking at him [TS]

01:14:36   but thats it thats that's all this is [TS]

01:14:38   the big rap of the movie is all those [TS]

01:14:41   things kinda going together leading to [TS]

01:14:43   that last sort of proper scene in the [TS]

01:14:45   movie which is that they have to wake [TS]

01:14:47   we've seen throughout the movie that [TS]

01:14:48   Gordon Cooper can sleep anywhere [TS]

01:14:50   including in ridiculous test [TS]

01:14:52   circumstances and the payoff is that [TS]

01:14:54   they have to wake them up so that they [TS]

01:14:56   can launch them into space because he's [TS]

01:14:57   falling asleep in his capsule [TS]

01:14:59   yep love it when I it's it's it's Jager [TS]

01:15:02   uh-oh post-crash walking on the runway [TS]

01:15:05   with the smoke coming up and is that a [TS]

01:15:08   man you're damn right Tessa yeah and the [TS]

01:15:13   i believe that the the actual on [TS]

01:15:15   cut on the soundtrack is called jaegers [TS]

01:15:17   triumph that they play throughout that [TS]

01:15:21   and the the end of the movie with with [TS]

01:15:23   the Gordo going up in space [TS]

01:15:25   I mean anytime you you walk out to meet [TS]

01:15:28   your ambulance is a pizza party [TS]

01:15:31   sure sure especially when you're like [TS]

01:15:33   actively on fire as your parents [TS]

01:15:35   yeah not covered covered in jet fuel and [TS]

01:15:38   oil and their the so there's a little [TS]

01:15:41   coat at the end which is kind of funny [TS]

01:15:42   because it's a basically a and ya Gus [TS]

01:15:45   Grissom got killed in that accident but [TS]

01:15:47   hey before that happened Gordon Cooper [TS]

01:15:49   when 22 orbits and is the last American [TS]

01:15:52   to go into space alone which is a very [TS]

01:15:54   strange little bit of trivia but there [TS]

01:15:57   it is [TS]

01:15:58   and for a brief moment he became the [TS]

01:16:00   greatest pilot anyone had ever seen and [TS]

01:16:02   that's the end of of the right stuff [TS]

01:16:04   which I thought I thought was a little [TS]

01:16:06   bit of a strange ending that maybe [TS]

01:16:08   wasn't necessary because of everything [TS]

01:16:09   else he's a little bit stream show [TS]

01:16:13   yeah i'm not sure how they could end it [TS]

01:16:15   because it is a hundred tip the [TS]

01:16:17   astronauts will be back in gemini well [TS]

01:16:21   that's that's the challenge right that [TS]

01:16:22   if you if you look forward to Gemini and [TS]

01:16:25   Apollo you diminish what these guys did [TS]

01:16:27   in a way and that you the movie once [TS]

01:16:30   these guys to be the stars and so I [TS]

01:16:33   think back to that corner it ended kind [TS]

01:16:36   of the only way that it could but i [TS]

01:16:37   agree with you like from the Hollywood [TS]

01:16:39   Hills perspective it's a little strange [TS]

01:16:41   i like that it makes a nice trip tik [TS]

01:16:44   with their you got the right stuff [TS]

01:16:45   you've got from the earth to the moon [TS]

01:16:47   you've got Apollo 13 and there is like [TS]

01:16:50   there is sort of a through line through [TS]

01:16:53   a lot of those which I kind of [TS]

01:16:55   appreciate like it kinda form sort of a [TS]

01:16:57   rough chronicle of this these different [TS]

01:16:59   aspects and periods in the space program [TS]

01:17:02   I don't know I i am on a more modern [TS]

01:17:05   movie which is this isn't and it's not [TS]

01:17:07   going to be but I i kept thinking when [TS]

01:17:10   they wake Gordon Cooper up so that they [TS]

01:17:12   can launch him and he launches into [TS]

01:17:14   space [TS]

01:17:15   I can feel like that's the end of the [TS]

01:17:16   movie i'm not sure we need to have the [TS]

01:17:18   first off like a footnote about Gus [TS]

01:17:20   Grissom and what happened to him [TS]

01:17:22   although he you know that [TS]

01:17:24   that is notable in terms of the the [TS]

01:17:25   seven and then and then we go back to [TS]

01:17:28   Gordon Cooper sort of as if he's the [TS]

01:17:31   main character of the movie which I'm [TS]

01:17:34   not sure I would completely invest in [TS]

01:17:36   that too so that we can wrap up his [TS]

01:17:38   story at the end like that so I don't [TS]

01:17:40   know I kinda liked how it ended with the [TS]

01:17:42   you've got the cutting back and forth [TS]

01:17:44   and the feather dancing and and and [TS]

01:17:46   Chuck Yeager and all that and then they [TS]

01:17:47   wake up Gordon Cooper and he gets shot [TS]

01:17:49   into space the end like I thought that [TS]

01:17:51   would have done it's fine but i just [TS]

01:17:54   find the code a little unnecessary I [TS]

01:17:55   think Kaufman is trying it is trying to [TS]

01:17:58   do he has three characters in mind [TS]

01:18:01   there's a gator who's the forgotten man [TS]

01:18:02   and there's Glen who's the chosen man [TS]

01:18:05   right and Cooper is the man who rises to [TS]

01:18:09   the occasion where he starts off the [TS]

01:18:10   movie as a as a pub knocker and uh by [TS]

01:18:15   the end he's giving that speech that uh [TS]

01:18:17   huh tiptoes gingerly towards humility so [TS]

01:18:21   I i think that's what he's trying to go [TS]

01:18:23   for and I'm not sure it's entirely [TS]

01:18:25   successful but um I again I appreciate [TS]

01:18:29   the kind of here these three figures and [TS]

01:18:32   we're going to tell the story through [TS]

01:18:33   them and also that he is the first the [TS]

01:18:36   mercury seven that we meet the movie so [TS]

01:18:38   let's see we got go out on his ascension [TS]

01:18:40   into into space although it's it's it [TS]

01:18:44   bear let's check out of space program [TS]

01:18:47   isn't it [TS]

01:18:48   you think about how this was me when [TS]

01:18:51   this movie was released it had been for [TS]

01:18:54   got the the shuttle program hadn't [TS]

01:18:56   released become operational yet [TS]

01:18:58   Challenger was still about 45 years away [TS]

01:19:02   and i think the people sweet there were [TS]

01:19:04   so many triumphs that NASA accomplished [TS]

01:19:07   during all of Apollo and even through [TS]

01:19:10   mercury with the with the exception of [TS]

01:19:11   Apollo one that I think people had [TS]

01:19:13   forgotten that no no this isn't you this [TS]

01:19:15   isn't you [TS]

01:19:15   they drive into the car they they get [TS]

01:19:17   into the car they turn the key and [TS]

01:19:18   unless there's an accident [TS]

01:19:20   everything's going to be okay it may I [TS]

01:19:22   think everybody needed a reminder that [TS]

01:19:23   this was every second there was again [TS]

01:19:26   this one loose Wallace honor it [TS]

01:19:29   somewhere that spacecraft floating and [TS]

01:19:32   floating weightless if it simply bumps [TS]

01:19:34   against the reader the context in a real [TS]

01:19:36   a bump [TS]

01:19:37   yet so they need to be reminded that [TS]

01:19:39   this was a very very difficult things [TS]

01:19:41   that are being asked to do so what [TS]

01:19:42   everybody think dr. dre what's your [TS]

01:19:44   overall take on on the right stuff [TS]

01:19:47   well I really I i think the book is [TS]

01:19:49   better than the movie but i really do [TS]

01:19:51   like I really do like the movie there [TS]

01:19:55   are I think there are interesting [TS]

01:19:57   politics in the movie i think this is [TS]

01:19:59   very much a movie of the Reagan era are [TS]

01:20:03   even know they're there are plenty of [TS]

01:20:05   cynical parts in it but there is this [TS]

01:20:07   sort of overarching patriotic aspect to [TS]

01:20:12   it that kind of fits in very well with [TS]

01:20:15   the with the morning in America time uh [TS]

01:20:18   I I remember distinctly at the time are [TS]

01:20:24   people thinking that this movie might [TS]

01:20:28   have an effect on the presidential race [TS]

01:20:30   or at least the Democratic primary that [TS]

01:20:34   was coming up the following year because [TS]

01:20:36   of john glenn's yes Scotland was running [TS]

01:20:39   know John Glenn we run a half the sky [TS]

01:20:41   ground because there's a lot of Medicine [TS]

01:20:44   Scott one arm so that was kind of [TS]

01:20:47   interesting and I remember a cartoon a [TS]

01:20:48   political cartoon of the time where a [TS]

01:20:51   people are coming out of a movie theater [TS]

01:20:54   there's a marquee behind it saying it's [TS]

01:20:55   there obviously they're coming out of [TS]

01:20:57   the right stuff and the character is [TS]

01:20:59   saying well that that decided for me I [TS]

01:21:03   know I'm who I'm going to vote for Chuck [TS]

01:21:05   Yeager and and that's so II it there was [TS]

01:21:10   a lot of talk about the movie having [TS]

01:21:11   some some effect and obviously it didn't [TS]

01:21:14   up one of the things that I really like [TS]

01:21:16   about the movie is the unusual casting [TS]

01:21:20   and you know phil mentioned uh levon [TS]

01:21:24   Helm which is i think is an unusual [TS]

01:21:26   choice i don't i don't share remember [TS]

01:21:28   him being in a movie before this he may [TS]

01:21:31   have I mean he's been in movies [TS]

01:21:33   certainly but this may have been the [TS]

01:21:34   first one and he's not given a lot to do [TS]

01:21:37   but he does it well [TS]

01:21:38   any-any does the narration part arm you [TS]

01:21:43   know Anthony moon yes well that's kind [TS]

01:21:44   of a weird thing I don't think that was [TS]

01:21:45   very successful there was the obvious [TS]

01:21:47   stunt casting of chuck yeager [TS]

01:21:49   I as a bartender at the happy bottom [TS]

01:21:53   there's the there's a great scene i'll [TS]

01:21:56   actually very well he's very well-used [TS]

01:21:58   so when Harry Shearer and a David Clemen [TS]

01:22:02   are talking about who gets to go and you [TS]

01:22:05   know jager doesn't fit the profile [TS]

01:22:07   because he doesn't he doesn't have any [TS]

01:22:09   college are the real Yeager is looming [TS]

01:22:13   over them in the background and kind of [TS]

01:22:15   looking askance at them but it was [TS]

01:22:17   pretty funny [TS]

01:22:18   I Stephen what do you think of this one [TS]

01:22:21   no I'm I'm predisposed to enjoy space [TS]

01:22:23   movies but i think the the length of [TS]

01:22:27   this movie and and some of the pacing [TS]

01:22:30   really aged it for me where I i didn't i [TS]

01:22:35   didn't particularly enjoy especially the [TS]

01:22:37   middle part but you know after we get to [TS]

01:22:40   know them and doing other testing [TS]

01:22:41   everything I said early really felt like [TS]

01:22:43   it drug on they go to fight it a lot [TS]

01:22:46   more fitted had been more more compacted [TS]

01:22:51   more economical in the story that had [TS]

01:22:53   told that said I do think it did a good [TS]

01:22:57   job and the thing that I walked away [TS]

01:22:58   enjoying it is the thing that I enjoyed [TS]

01:23:01   from the book is singing the [TS]

01:23:03   relationship between seven guys who [TS]

01:23:06   really are there not only competing for [TS]

01:23:09   a job but they're competing for space in [TS]

01:23:11   the history books write the first guy [TS]

01:23:13   goes up the first guy who makes an orbit [TS]

01:23:15   these are the names that we remember and [TS]

01:23:17   even of the seven only a few of them are [TS]

01:23:20   names that you know maybe anything close [TS]

01:23:23   to household names at this point and [TS]

01:23:24   it's it's the guys who are in the [TS]

01:23:27   history books and if you made one of [TS]

01:23:29   those flights that was a repeat of [TS]

01:23:32   something that someone else had done [TS]

01:23:33   before you kind of get forgotten a [TS]

01:23:36   little bit but and despite despite of [TS]

01:23:39   all of that that they do band together [TS]

01:23:41   and they do stand-up to NASA and stand [TS]

01:23:45   up to engineer the same with their [TS]

01:23:46   bosses and say look this is the way that [TS]

01:23:48   we're going to do it [TS]

01:23:50   you chose us to do a job let us do that [TS]

01:23:52   job that's that story always gets me and [TS]

01:23:56   it's always something that I enjoy in in [TS]

01:23:59   reading and watching anything about this [TS]

01:24:00   era [TS]

01:24:01   in NASA history but i think that this [TS]

01:24:03   particular example is is a little [TS]

01:24:06   long-winded for my taste [TS]

01:24:07   the young people today with their movies [TS]

01:24:08   it's awful that cut haha well it does it [TS]

01:24:12   does feel I mean it is of a style this [TS]

01:24:14   is an epic that if they still make [TS]

01:24:17   really long movies they do but this this [TS]

01:24:19   has that feel of of something epic in [TS]

01:24:22   scope and and willing to take its time [TS]

01:24:24   with a lot of it and I think they're i [TS]

01:24:27   agree that there are places where it [TS]

01:24:28   sags a little bit um it just it they [TS]

01:24:31   don't make them like this anymore that [TS]

01:24:32   is for sure [TS]

01:24:34   dan what's your take on the right stuff [TS]

01:24:37   yeah i think is a good word for it [TS]

01:24:39   although i think it was it lacks the [TS]

01:24:40   strong through line of a lot of other [TS]

01:24:43   sort of epic movies someone in the in [TS]

01:24:45   the chatroom mention lawrence of arabia [TS]

01:24:46   sure top which is one of my favorite [TS]

01:24:49   absolutely you know I has a much [TS]

01:24:51   stronger sort of plot line then this [TS]

01:24:54   doesn't and you know obviously you're [TS]

01:24:57   always run into trouble in both of those [TS]

01:24:59   cases adapting something that is that is [TS]

01:25:01   you know historical you're also [TS]

01:25:05   challenged here because you're dealing [TS]

01:25:06   with essentially seven or eight guys as [TS]

01:25:09   opposed to one person mainly I i agree [TS]

01:25:12   with stephen that at times it feels kind [TS]

01:25:14   along with it until it is just the [TS]

01:25:15   structure of it is a very very strange [TS]

01:25:17   movie it feels like a loose series of [TS]

01:25:19   vignettes you know sort of hung together [TS]

01:25:21   in this is phil pointed out earlier it's [TS]

01:25:23   also there's like some weird tonal [TS]

01:25:25   shifts you know with the broad comedy [TS]

01:25:26   versus you know the very serious sort of [TS]

01:25:30   the historical impact of it so I i felt [TS]

01:25:34   very much time but I enjoyed it overall [TS]

01:25:35   I like some of the comedy because it [TS]

01:25:38   does light mean what could otherwise be [TS]

01:25:40   kind of dreary at times especially for a [TS]

01:25:43   movie that is has aged in this way I [TS]

01:25:47   think it's a movie that is is long and [TS]

01:25:50   yet some of that length probably could [TS]

01:25:52   have been filled better because you know [TS]

01:25:54   I think about some of the long lingering [TS]

01:25:55   shots on Unger in the in the desert and [TS]

01:25:59   it's like I I appreciate the story of [TS]

01:26:01   chuck yeager but perhaps there is a [TS]

01:26:04   better way to use that time even if you [TS]

01:26:06   wanted to maintain sort of the longer [TS]

01:26:08   epic feel to it I can you know and [TS]

01:26:12   having never seen it before [TS]

01:26:13   I came in with my knowledge mainly the [TS]

01:26:15   space program from like other other sort [TS]

01:26:17   of dramatizations and I you know was [TS]

01:26:22   interested to learn a little bit more in [TS]

01:26:24   some stuff that I definitely didn't know [TS]

01:26:26   about the development of this period in [TS]

01:26:28   the in the space program but it's a yeah [TS]

01:26:31   its overall i would give it a thumbs up [TS]

01:26:35   and I would be very positive about it [TS]

01:26:37   but it is definitely a movie of its time [TS]

01:26:39   as I think dr. Drake said and it sort of [TS]

01:26:42   resonates in that way because it had [TS]

01:26:45   that sort of specific not only the [TS]

01:26:46   filmmaking but just the the sort of mood [TS]

01:26:49   and tone of a lot of it but yeah I i [TS]

01:26:53   think it certainly deserves to be to be [TS]

01:26:56   seen and it's a solid film Andy judging [TS]

01:27:00   on everything you said tonight you don't [TS]

01:27:02   care for this movie very much right [TS]

01:27:04   I its system of my favorite movies and [TS]

01:27:09   when I first saw it I didn't know very [TS]

01:27:12   much about the space program so it's not [TS]

01:27:14   as I was coming in like seeing so we're [TS]

01:27:16   taking off okay i hope we get to see the [TS]

01:27:18   the point which jo whiley sure I like [TS]

01:27:20   close the hatch located get to see that [TS]

01:27:23   yeah I see em everybody isn't I'm with I [TS]

01:27:28   by disagree with the i did not have the [TS]

01:27:31   same experience of thinking that it was [TS]

01:27:32   too long i can't help but think of of [TS]

01:27:35   roger ebert's famous line that no-good [TS]

01:27:38   movie is too long no bad movie is short [TS]

01:27:40   enough i think that this is as long as [TS]

01:27:43   it needed to be for the tone that it [TS]

01:27:45   wanted to adopt I think that they made [TS]

01:27:48   it really really clear from the very [TS]

01:27:50   beginning of this movie that this is not [TS]

01:27:52   going to be an action movie this is not [TS]

01:27:55   going to be one where we're going to [TS]

01:27:56   we're not going to linger over things [TS]

01:27:58   we're not gonna give the actors time to [TS]

01:28:00   have their pauses and just look at each [TS]

01:28:02   other we're going to make sure that you [TS]

01:28:05   understand this world that we're going [TS]

01:28:06   to throw you into for the next two or [TS]

01:28:08   three hours and it's pretty doesn't mean [TS]

01:28:11   if he thought that was too long of [TS]

01:28:13   course that doesn't mean that gosh you [TS]

01:28:15   don't appreciate [TS]

01:28:16   bring a long-form storytelling you don't [TS]

01:28:18   have the ability to pay attention to [TS]

01:28:20   maintain focus [TS]

01:28:21   I'm just saying that I didn't have that [TS]

01:28:22   reaction if I really liked every every [TS]

01:28:27   part of this movie I thought I don't [TS]

01:28:29   deny that there are certainly scenes [TS]

01:28:31   entire sequences that could have been [TS]

01:28:33   removed but as I'm listening to [TS]

01:28:36   everybody else talk about that I was [TS]

01:28:38   trying to think about is there any [TS]

01:28:39   character that i would i would miss if [TS]

01:28:43   this were edited for television and to [TS]

01:28:45   get it under two and a half hours but [TS]

01:28:46   they let's say they move this subplot we [TS]

01:28:48   didn't get to see the nurse or we didn't [TS]

01:28:50   get to see the training part of it i [TS]

01:28:52   would really miss having seen that and I [TS]

01:28:54   think that owes to the fact that they [TS]

01:28:55   really allowed every single character to [TS]

01:28:58   just not be a background disposable [TS]

01:29:01   character even though or we talked about [TS]

01:29:03   the the or the mexican orderly during [TS]

01:29:06   the during the the physicals it could [TS]

01:29:09   have been just like the big let's just [TS]

01:29:11   get somebody who is brown and that way [TS]

01:29:14   we can make the joke about go gosh [TS]

01:29:16   they're so they're making Jose Jimenez [TS]

01:29:17   jokes they shouldn't be doing that they [TS]

01:29:19   gave him lines too real and they put in [TS]

01:29:22   a situation where he is absolutely in [TS]

01:29:24   country in the free owns this scene of [TS]

01:29:27   just walking these two astronauts all [TS]

01:29:29   the way back to where they're probably [TS]

01:29:30   gonna get some relief from this thing's [TS]

01:29:32   been shoved up their butt and also they [TS]

01:29:34   give they given him a scene that believe [TS]

01:29:37   it or not it's it's that one line at the [TS]

01:29:39   end of that scene where Shepherd is of [TS]

01:29:43   course like a child both in stature [TS]

01:29:46   compared to the orderly and also the [TS]

01:29:48   idea that he's he's about the yolk drop [TS]

01:29:51   his pants sake of em IQ how am i doing [TS]

01:29:55   am I going to make it yours [TS]

01:29:57   I think yes man I think you're going to [TS]

01:29:59   make it you're going to be an astronaut [TS]

01:30:02   yeah and so yes so that that's what [TS]

01:30:05   that's what i'm getting at if you work [TS]

01:30:06   there's nobody who's disposable again [TS]

01:30:09   the things you can cut but there's [TS]

01:30:10   nobody that is like okay well there's no [TS]

01:30:11   point to that so as I'm saying I i just [TS]

01:30:14   i'm very very happy to have spent three [TS]

01:30:16   hours in the world of these people [TS]

01:30:17   created because they decided that I [TS]

01:30:20   think they have an awareness that we're [TS]

01:30:21   gonna we're asking for asking three [TS]

01:30:23   hours of these people's attention [TS]

01:30:25   we don't want to waste any of that time [TS]

01:30:27   and we don't have to do that by having [TS]

01:30:29   things explode every 30 seconds we don't [TS]

01:30:31   have to have all kinds of trumped-up [TS]

01:30:32   drama but we have to make sure that [TS]

01:30:34   whatever we put on the screen there is a [TS]

01:30:37   high level of craftsmanship and people [TS]

01:30:39   don't feel as though that time they [TS]

01:30:40   spent watching that character was wasted [TS]

01:30:43   so no I think I thought was really [TS]

01:30:45   wonderfully done i'm very happy to exist [TS]

01:30:48   i do think that special effects stand up [TS]

01:30:50   very very well i remember reading in the [TS]

01:30:52   the big issue of us in effect that [TS]

01:30:55   talked about the effects and maybe my [TS]

01:30:59   head as a kid my head program with all [TS]

01:31:01   all the techniques that went to star [TS]

01:31:02   wars and went into alien and all these [TS]

01:31:04   other movies [TS]

01:31:05   SI well no we just basically flu these [TS]

01:31:07   things against the sky had very very [TS]

01:31:10   high speed and then we slowed it down so [TS]

01:31:12   oh so that's why the planes look so good [TS]

01:31:14   because you actually put planes okay [TS]

01:31:16   okay at work so yeah I i have a blu-ray [TS]

01:31:20   and when if if they release in 4k i will [TS]

01:31:23   be the sucker who buys it again in 4k [TS]

01:31:25   and I will watch every single bit of it [TS]

01:31:28   now shall we [TS]

01:31:29   when we started we already set up front [TS]

01:31:31   that this is a you think this is an [TS]

01:31:33   underappreciated one of the best films [TS]

01:31:35   of the eighties so I I get you haven't [TS]

01:31:37   changed your mind since we started [TS]

01:31:40   ok I'll smote flawed movie great movie [TS]

01:31:42   yeah it should be pointed out i don't [TS]

01:31:44   think the 80s was a great decade for me [TS]

01:31:46   well but can I can you do it you know [TS]

01:31:50   you can only play against the teams they [TS]

01:31:52   put in Freddy and raging at all [TS]

01:31:54   yeah well no the the ones that are good [TS]

01:31:57   or good rating bowl Amadeus raiders of [TS]

01:31:59   the lost ark this one right stuff [TS]

01:32:02   no it's all good so the blade runner I [TS]

01:32:06   think one of the things about this about [TS]

01:32:08   this movie too is that it allows and now [TS]

01:32:12   35 years old basically it is fixing a [TS]

01:32:17   point in history that it was 20 years [TS]

01:32:20   removed from itself when it was made but [TS]

01:32:22   this is one of those things where it [TS]

01:32:24   allows us to access what it was like on [TS]

01:32:28   the frontier of space and finding the [TS]

01:32:32   people who are going to be the [TS]

01:32:32   astronauts and i love that this movie [TS]

01:32:36   exists in the world because it's a it's [TS]

01:32:38   an accessible way for people to look at [TS]

01:32:41   how how we got to our astronauts and [TS]

01:32:45   started the space program and as a you [TS]

01:32:48   know it's a period piece from 20 years [TS]

01:32:51   ago about something that happened 50 [TS]

01:32:53   years ago and are 30 years ago about [TS]

01:32:55   something happened 50 years ago and i'm [TS]

01:32:58   glad it exists the world for that reason [TS]

01:33:00   that that instead of just saying oh yeah [TS]

01:33:02   they pick some astronauts like you can [TS]

01:33:04   see who those people were like what [TS]

01:33:06   would work what they were like what it [TS]

01:33:08   took [TS]

01:33:09   who had the right stuff to to climb in [TS]

01:33:11   these ridiculous contraption and risk [TS]

01:33:12   their lives and and that's you know i [TS]

01:33:14   think that i think is great value in in [TS]

01:33:16   in having a document like this it's not [TS]

01:33:18   a documentary by any stretch of the [TS]

01:33:19   imagination but it's a movie can point [TS]

01:33:21   to and say well if you want to know how [TS]

01:33:23   that all came together here it is this [TS]
