The Incomparable

278: Fake Jedi Boy

00:00:01   the incomparable number 278 December [TS]

00:00:16   hello everyone welcome back to the [TS]

00:00:18   incomparable and another in our series [TS]

00:00:20   of shows celebrating and discussing Star [TS]

00:00:22   Wars Episode 7 the force awakens a i am [TS]

00:00:27   your host Anthony Johnson and as you've [TS]

00:00:29   probably noticed I am NOT Jason's now in [TS]

00:00:32   fact I'm not even one of the usual [TS]

00:00:34   panelists because i live in the UK and [TS]

00:00:37   normally when those guys are recording [TS]

00:00:39   it's about 3am here so instead where we [TS]

00:00:42   decided we're going to call this episode [TS]

00:00:43   how the North feels about Star Wars and [TS]

00:00:46   we're recording at a more civilized hour [TS]

00:00:48   for a more civilized show [TS]

00:00:51   ah Thank You Liz one person held it all [TS]

00:00:57   right I'm very Star Wars jokes you will [TS]

00:01:01   fight usually find me funny enough [TS]

00:01:03   elsewhere on the incomparable network [TS]

00:01:05   hosting the podcast unjustly maligned [TS]

00:01:07   where by coincidence we have in fact [TS]

00:01:09   well although my guests have I haven't [TS]

00:01:12   defended the Star Wars prequels to a [TS]

00:01:15   certain extent today buddy I'm i know [TS]

00:01:18   but my love original trilogy Star Wars [TS]

00:01:20   runs very very deep and very long right [TS]

00:01:22   back to seeing a new hope in the cinema [TS]

00:01:25   when it was originally released and so [TS]

00:01:27   joining me to talk about let's be honest [TS]

00:01:30   the true successor to that original [TS]

00:01:32   trilogy is from Scotland Liz miles you [TS]

00:01:35   heard her laughing a minute ago [TS]

00:01:37   hello also from Scotland james thompson [TS]

00:01:40   i'm silently giving you a thumbs up [TS]

00:01:42   using a lighter haha I lover and finally [TS]

00:01:46   across the pond in wintry Massachusetts [TS]

00:01:49   it's done more'n it's very seasonable in [TS]

00:01:51   wintry Massachusetts it's a balmy 50 or [TS]

00:01:54   60 degrees Fahrenheit here so yeah maybe [TS]

00:01:56   a little less north than usual I have no [TS]

00:01:59   idea what that feels [TS]

00:02:00   what's that mean by that is that in real [TS]

00:02:02   temperatures it's like with like cool [TS]

00:02:05   and rainy again it's like Scout [TS]

00:02:06   basically it feels like scoured here is [TS]

00:02:09   actually on seasonably mild [TS]

00:02:10   here as well yes really warm well I [TS]

00:02:13   wouldn't go that far huh yeah but I came [TS]

00:02:16   out of the star wars at like three in [TS]

00:02:18   the morning wearing a t-shirt and there [TS]

00:02:20   was not a WoW not falling to the ground [TS]

00:02:24   she's joining us this is the weather [TS]

00:02:26   podcast there was a vertically out here [TS]

00:02:28   well I'm underwater so I don't know [TS]

00:02:32   yeah we want we almost re here but we [TS]

00:02:35   almost are here as well actually I'm [TS]

00:02:37   here in the lovely wet and windy and [TS]

00:02:39   Northwest of England and he's very very [TS]

00:02:41   way without flood warnings of our yes [TS]

00:02:44   your your your yes you're probably worse [TS]

00:02:47   off than welcome to the north so uh and [TS]

00:02:50   welcome to the show everyone [TS]

00:02:52   damn forgive me i'm going to skip over [TS]

00:02:54   you for a moment because I thought you [TS]

00:02:56   were on the sort of the big show [TS]

00:02:57   discussing this with Jason and serenity [TS]

00:02:59   and John siracusa so please do you have [TS]

00:03:03   before we started getting to discussing [TS]

00:03:04   you know characters and moments [TS]

00:03:06   do you have any sort of broad opening [TS]

00:03:08   remarks that you want to make about your [TS]

00:03:11   relationship to solve and yes yes I do [TS]

00:03:16   thank goodness for that good i watch [TS]

00:03:20   star wars in very much the wrong order [TS]

00:03:22   I was I'm bit too young to have seen [TS]

00:03:24   over tomorrow I can't remember time when [TS]

00:03:26   a handsome return of the jedi and I was [TS]

00:03:29   quite young when I saw the Empire [TS]

00:03:30   Strikes Back and I remember the first [TS]

00:03:32   time I saw a new hope and watching and [TS]

00:03:35   thinking never seen this before this is [TS]

00:03:38   a big and I was at least 10 or so I'm [TS]

00:03:42   not entirely sure that's the most [TS]

00:03:44   sensible order of cinnamon but it kind [TS]

00:03:47   of its it's like a build-up because my [TS]

00:03:49   favorite one of the original trilogy is [TS]

00:03:50   the first one so it's exciting that way [TS]

00:03:53   and so when they came back I was quite I [TS]

00:03:56   was reasonably excited and then very [TS]

00:03:58   quickly unexcited and sad my life star [TS]

00:04:01   wars spanish first love [TS]

00:04:03   as to our is in the computer games [TS]

00:04:05   versus of knights of the old republic [TS]

00:04:06   and its sequel and the a morgue of which [TS]

00:04:10   I i do want to think about how many [TS]

00:04:13   hours I valuable hours I spades have [TS]

00:04:17   played that God game with its ridiculous [TS]

00:04:20   rules and things and basically I [TS]

00:04:23   guy you spend you kill Jedi make money [TS]

00:04:26   by plant pots decorate your house is [TS]

00:04:28   what i do on that a lot so I care a lot [TS]

00:04:32   about Star Wars obviously really oh just [TS]

00:04:35   ok so uh how did the whole I am your [TS]

00:04:39   father thing go for you then if you sin [TS]

00:04:41   if you saw Empire first or did you say [TS]

00:04:45   so Jedi first such a diverse john wells [TS]

00:04:48   in july so I just that dogs just been I [TS]

00:04:50   think that was no 10 right right so it's [TS]

00:04:52   like I don't remember notnot wow so it [TS]

00:04:58   was not as if it was very so certain [TS]

00:05:00   moments of this n stories of this number [TS]

00:05:02   very exciting looks like I get them i [TS]

00:05:05   think the right things that you're [TS]

00:05:06   learning for the first time ever yeah it [TS]

00:05:08   was it was oh it was very nice to see a [TS]

00:05:11   new star wars movie at the cinema and [TS]

00:05:13   for it not to be terrible [TS]

00:05:15   I like that feeling i think that's a [TS]

00:05:17   sentiment we were all having right now [TS]

00:05:18   is near [TS]

00:05:19   James what about you then well Star Wars [TS]

00:05:21   was the first film I saw in the cinema [TS]

00:05:24   as well in 1978 i think it was it was [TS]

00:05:27   either that or the cap from 80 space [TS]

00:05:29   both of which are now but it no disney [TS]

00:05:33   movies now that i think about it but [TS]

00:05:36   it's pretty much impossible for me to [TS]

00:05:37   judge whether it's a good film or not [TS]

00:05:39   because it was the first because I've [TS]

00:05:41   seen it so many times since and I grew [TS]

00:05:43   up with all the merchandise and i do [TS]

00:05:45   mean Star Wars not the cat from outer [TS]

00:05:46   space but let me tell you how badly I [TS]

00:05:51   was burned by the Phantom Menace so [TS]

00:05:54   about three weeks before the Phantom [TS]

00:05:56   Menace opened i was visiting the bay [TS]

00:05:58   area from my day job a certain fruit [TS]

00:06:01   based company while I was over there [TS]

00:06:04   I had the chance to visit Skywalker [TS]

00:06:06   Ranch through a friend that worked the [TS]

00:06:09   sadly departed LucasArts so we drive up [TS]

00:06:13   to the front gate [TS]

00:06:14   we get in we get a little sheet of paper [TS]

00:06:16   with the rules of the ranch on it so no [TS]

00:06:18   photos unless somebody else's in the [TS]

00:06:20   photo that sort of thing I got the full [TS]

00:06:22   tour I saw the library that had Luke's [TS]

00:06:25   lightsaber and indeed hat and whip in a [TS]

00:06:27   little display case and everything there [TS]

00:06:29   was a vineyard and I was sitting in the [TS]

00:06:32   main building having my lunch and I was [TS]

00:06:34   told that joke [TS]

00:06:35   what was literally upstairs editing the [TS]

00:06:38   final cut of the Phantom Menace I think [TS]

00:06:41   it's fair to say that I was quite [TS]

00:06:42   excited at this point and on the way out [TS]

00:06:44   i was walking back down the driveway and [TS]

00:06:47   I may have actually been picking up a [TS]

00:06:49   small pebble from said driveway which I [TS]

00:06:51   may still have like movies don't tell me [TS]

00:06:56   you still have trouble from disney your [TS]

00:06:59   drives past in his car and actually [TS]

00:07:01   waves at me and you know I've just been [TS]

00:07:04   telling me to put the pedal to pedal [TS]

00:07:06   back haha i would I mean I was convinced [TS]

00:07:10   it was actually an ilm prop George that [TS]

00:07:12   they have wave everyone who comes to [TS]

00:07:14   visit anyway the point is I came out of [TS]

00:07:19   that whole experience convinced that the [TS]

00:07:21   Phantom Menace would be the single [TS]

00:07:22   greatest film of all time works out i [TS]

00:07:26   think i have I had little further to [TS]

00:07:29   fall the most perfect so I went into [TS]

00:07:32   this one with immense trepidation and in [TS]

00:07:35   fact to counter my excitement before we [TS]

00:07:37   went into we SAT and watched the style [TS]

00:07:39   was holiday special girl that's [TS]

00:07:43   unnecessary [TS]

00:07:44   well I needed to get my expectations [TS]

00:07:46   then and I think you hurt [TS]

00:07:47   oh man you're taking a shot at castor [TS]

00:07:52   oil or something to go with them [TS]

00:07:54   oh dear but you are feeling that same [TS]

00:07:58   relief of you know I've seen a new star [TS]

00:08:00   wars movie and it's not terrible [TS]

00:08:02   yeah i mean it came out of that thinking [TS]

00:08:03   yeah that was a Star Wars movie and it [TS]

00:08:06   right it takes all the boxes that i was [TS]

00:08:08   looking for and there was this off that [TS]

00:08:11   for the first 15 minutes it was like you [TS]

00:08:13   know I just think you don't screw this [TS]

00:08:14   up transcript [TS]

00:08:15   yes exactly and eventually just relaxed [TS]

00:08:20   and enjoyed yeah oh yeah I think that [TS]

00:08:23   was that yet there was a point and we'll [TS]

00:08:25   come to that later but there was a point [TS]

00:08:26   where yeah I sort of stopped thinking [TS]

00:08:28   please be good and just went with it and [TS]

00:08:31   then I was just watching a movie [TS]

00:08:33   yeah I think serenity made a really good [TS]

00:08:35   point actually on that earlier [TS]

00:08:38   sho-sa Early Show god what was it like [TS]

00:08:40   you know less than 48 hours ago his [TS]

00:08:42   rhetoric but that the it just it feels [TS]

00:08:46   like a Star Wars movie if in a way that [TS]

00:08:49   the [TS]

00:08:49   equals don't which is you know bizarre [TS]

00:08:52   obviously being that they were made by [TS]

00:08:53   Lucas but they just didn't feel like [TS]

00:08:56   Star Wars where is this really does feel [TS]

00:08:58   like Star Wars yeah i'm i mean i saw the [TS]

00:09:02   film it was on the Wednesday just past [TS]

00:09:05   midnight the tank was the first showings [TS]

00:09:07   in the UK and i've only seen it once [TS]

00:09:10   because the first decent imac seats i [TS]

00:09:12   could get after that point on the [TS]

00:09:14   thirtieth right I'm but so I'm not [TS]

00:09:16   probably forgotten pretty much [TS]

00:09:17   everything that happened in the fellow [TS]

00:09:19   doesn't everyone i should be an [TS]

00:09:21   excellent game and listen you don't [TS]

00:09:24   worry i'm about two hours listening to [TS]

00:09:26   the west coast incomparable podcast on [TS]

00:09:29   it and I think you are still discussing [TS]

00:09:31   the opening crawl but perhaps never [TS]

00:09:33   we're thorough [TS]

00:09:35   yeah I'm all right yeah damn so I mean [TS]

00:09:39   we already heard your thoughts in you [TS]

00:09:41   know in general on that west coast thing [TS]

00:09:43   but having had another couple of days [TS]

00:09:45   now to sort of think about it and I [TS]

00:09:47   think you've seen it again in that time [TS]

00:09:49   I have not i'm only i would hope i hope [TS]

00:09:52   to go see it again but it didn't work [TS]

00:09:53   out that well we're gonna go see it [TS]

00:09:55   again this week with some family well in [TS]

00:09:58   my way for the holidays but yeah I like [TS]

00:10:00   James I saw one that I'm still I I [TS]

00:10:03   maybes fuzzy on on some things but i'm [TS]

00:10:05   looking forward to seeing you again [TS]

00:10:06   which is always an x-15 right earth [TS]

00:10:09   would be what having had time to reflect [TS]

00:10:12   and you know given the will be [TS]

00:10:15   everybody's doing all this podcasting [TS]

00:10:17   and stuff about it [TS]

00:10:19   we're all as you joked on Twitter [TS]

00:10:21   earlier you know every slack channel [TS]

00:10:22   that your is talking about Star Wars [TS]

00:10:24   right now and everyone is typing is the [TS]

00:10:26   status notification at the bottom so [TS]

00:10:28   it's been on your mind obviously so [TS]

00:10:31   haven't had time to reflect you know are [TS]

00:10:34   you coming around to anything or [TS]

00:10:36   changing your mind on anything or I i [TS]

00:10:39   think you know I think the important to [TS]

00:10:41   come away from this it's it's really [TS]

00:10:43   hard to put into context because those [TS]

00:10:45   earlier films at least you know it [TS]

00:10:47   sounds like for all of us the original [TS]

00:10:48   trilogy was such a big part of our lives [TS]

00:10:51   and you know we were exposed to it at an [TS]

00:10:53   age where we weren't necessarily fully [TS]

00:10:56   developed an arc all of our critical [TS]

00:10:58   faculties unless it's always sort of [TS]

00:11:00   occupied a place in our hearts of [TS]

00:11:02   emotion not to say that it's not they're [TS]

00:11:04   not technically wonderful films but you [TS]

00:11:07   know we in the same way that i find that [TS]

00:11:10   we you know we were blind to many of the [TS]

00:11:11   faults of things that were exposed to is [TS]

00:11:13   as very young kids you know we don't we [TS]

00:11:16   sweet gloss over certain things that [TS]

00:11:18   maybe less perfect or other because of [TS]

00:11:21   you know when we saw him what it meant [TS]

00:11:23   to us and and none of that is wrong i [TS]

00:11:25   think it's harder to come into a movie [TS]

00:11:27   like this when you as we are now much [TS]

00:11:30   older than we saw the original trilogy [TS]

00:11:32   and not be a little bit critical of it [TS]

00:11:34   and I definitely have criticisms of it I [TS]

00:11:37   i think it's very hard for it in general [TS]

00:11:39   to occupy even the same sort of level [TS]

00:11:42   for me i watch two days later I I after [TS]

00:11:46   i saw force awakens i watch to return [TS]

00:11:48   the Jedi to show my cousin's kids [TS]

00:11:50   because I've watched the new hope and [TS]

00:11:52   empire strikes back with them and we're [TS]

00:11:54   you know it's like time for them see [TS]

00:11:55   which are the Jedi and it was [TS]

00:11:57   interesting watching that in such close [TS]

00:11:58   proximity to the force awakens because [TS]

00:12:01   you know your sort of jumping from of [TS]

00:12:02   seeing Han Solo as a you know as a [TS]

00:12:05   grizzled old gray-haired guy to you know [TS]

00:12:08   sort of back into his prime and and sort [TS]

00:12:10   of trying to make that connection of ok [TS]

00:12:11   this is it's the same universe [TS]

00:12:13   II i think it probably has a certain [TS]

00:12:15   amount of disconnect in it as well [TS]

00:12:17   because I i did like the film and and [TS]

00:12:20   like i said i'm looking forward to [TS]

00:12:21   seeing it a second time but in some ways [TS]

00:12:24   that also solidified for me that I can [TS]

00:12:26   divorce this to a certain extent from [TS]

00:12:28   the original trilogy and say like okay [TS]

00:12:31   you know this is this is going back and [TS]

00:12:33   revisiting some of the same characters [TS]

00:12:35   but if I really wanted to you know just [TS]

00:12:37   sort of view the original trilogy as its [TS]

00:12:38   own self-contained thing I feel [TS]

00:12:40   comfortable doing that not an end in the [TS]

00:12:43   same way I imagine some people might [TS]

00:12:45   feel similarly about something like you [TS]

00:12:47   know doctor who which we obviously had a [TS]

00:12:49   huge hiatus between incarnations as well [TS]

00:12:51   so that there are people you know who [TS]

00:12:54   who might like you know the classic [TS]

00:12:56   Doctor Who versus the more modern doctor [TS]

00:12:57   who and there's connections it's [TS]

00:12:59   undeniable that they take place you know [TS]

00:13:00   there's sort of a continuity run running [TS]

00:13:02   through all of it but you know you can [TS]

00:13:04   also still feel comfortable picking and [TS]

00:13:05   choosing the parts of it that you want [TS]

00:13:07   to think about and so for me I really [TS]

00:13:09   it's it's fascinating because it it's [TS]

00:13:13   not that it feels like fanfiction it's [TS]

00:13:15   obviously better [TS]

00:13:16   does feel like Star Wars you know and [TS]

00:13:17   the fact that it was made by someone who [TS]

00:13:19   is legitimately a fan for the first time [TS]

00:13:21   you know really colors it with a [TS]

00:13:24   different a different brush there and I [TS]

00:13:28   think what I've you know come to feel [TS]

00:13:29   about it is like these may not be my [TS]

00:13:32   star wars movies but I'm still really [TS]

00:13:35   happy that their star wars movies and [TS]

00:13:37   that this is a Star Wars movie because i [TS]

00:13:39   do agree that it feels like a Star Wars [TS]

00:13:40   movie in the way that the prequels never [TS]

00:13:43   did and even if it doesn't quite reach [TS]

00:13:44   the heights of some of that original for [TS]

00:13:46   me just because of the context of when i [TS]

00:13:48   saw it and how much it affected my life [TS]

00:13:50   I don't think that necessarily lessens [TS]

00:13:52   the impact of it as a film for me well [TS]

00:13:55   and just talking about the originals [TS]

00:13:56   treating the originals as a [TS]

00:13:58   self-contained unit I've been doing that [TS]

00:14:00   for the last what 15 20 we all have guns [TS]

00:14:05   right exactly because well the thing was [TS]

00:14:08   that I saw phantom menace in the cinema [TS]

00:14:10   and like everybody else I was terribly [TS]

00:14:11   disappointed but I was so disappointed [TS]

00:14:13   that I didn't even watch the other [TS]

00:14:14   movies until I'd until I did the show [TS]

00:14:17   the podcast about them earlier this year [TS]

00:14:19   on understand i had not even seen clones [TS]

00:14:23   or going to the same what do you think [TS]

00:14:26   of them i refused to watch the thought [TS]

00:14:28   they were terrible [TS]

00:14:29   yeah aren't we all example yeah but I [TS]

00:14:32   that was how badly i hated Phantom [TS]

00:14:34   Menace I was just like well I'm not [TS]

00:14:36   watching these other movies there's no [TS]

00:14:37   way they can redeem this film and always [TS]

00:14:39   right but yeah I mean I went from [TS]

00:14:41   watching you know I haven't seen phantom [TS]

00:14:43   menace five times in the theaters [TS]

00:14:44   because it took awhile for its hey hey [TS]

00:14:48   Atlanta again once again on that knife's [TS]

00:14:50   edge of being a kid and being an adult [TS]

00:14:52   and thinking why are I was I was reeled [TS]

00:14:55   in you and I yeah what are these came i [TS]

00:14:57   am I wrong am I wrong somehow for not [TS]

00:15:00   liking movies is this a fault of mine [TS]

00:15:02   there was a there was definitely a [TS]

00:15:04   feeling watching it thinking this isn't [TS]

00:15:07   good [TS]

00:15:08   something's not right you had an exam [TS]

00:15:10   just that well you know the music's [TS]

00:15:12   right everything looks right kinda no no [TS]

00:15:15   we did not look right now okay think but [TS]

00:15:18   on the flipside like going into this [TS]

00:15:20   movie and trying to I think it is like [TS]

00:15:22   you guys were saying like the don't [TS]

00:15:24   screw this up don't screw this up [TS]

00:15:25   mentality and then being able to sort of [TS]

00:15:27   like you know take a deep breath and say [TS]

00:15:29   I'm just [TS]

00:15:30   I'm just gonna watch the movie like [TS]

00:15:31   that's a challenge right because there [TS]

00:15:33   is so much of this period where it's [TS]

00:15:34   like you're feeling like resistant like [TS]

00:15:36   am I gonna get burned again is this all [TS]

00:15:38   a mistake and then it takes some time [TS]

00:15:40   and that's why i'm looking forward to [TS]

00:15:41   watching it again because having only [TS]

00:15:43   seen it once i still have to contend [TS]

00:15:45   with that whole feeling of its should i [TS]

00:15:48   commit should i let my sister I opened [TS]

00:15:49   myself up to be hurt again [TS]

00:15:51   trust me totally holds up yeah i'm [TS]

00:15:53   looking forward to it and I I didn't buy [TS]

00:15:55   a single piece of merchandise before I [TS]

00:15:57   saw the film because a lot of people [TS]

00:16:00   lots of much James owns a full-size [TS]

00:16:04   battle directly but i found a inbox my [TS]

00:16:08   collection of you know like anakin [TS]

00:16:10   skywalker figures and y2 and whoever [TS]

00:16:14   else that I had no idea who these people [TS]

00:16:17   were and recently when there was the the [TS]

00:16:20   force friday thing where all the [TS]

00:16:22   merchandise was released for this film I [TS]

00:16:24   took a picture of all of them and [TS]

00:16:26   tweeted it and said I'm so looking [TS]

00:16:28   forward to seeing this new film just to [TS]

00:16:31   remind everyone your IE are either have [TS]

00:16:35   no memory of mine i have a couple of [TS]

00:16:38   memories here and there but no overall [TS]

00:16:40   sort of memory of my life before Star [TS]

00:16:43   Wars I i literally I was five years old [TS]

00:16:46   when the first time say when a new hope [TS]

00:16:47   was released I sword in the cinema it [TS]

00:16:49   was one of the first not the first one [TS]

00:16:51   of the first films have a sword in the [TS]

00:16:52   cinema and I literally do not remember [TS]

00:16:54   my life before that point I in a toys [TS]

00:16:59   Spenny sticker albums remember those [TS]

00:17:01   brits that the first album I ever owned [TS]

00:17:05   that my mother bought for me when I was [TS]

00:17:07   I think seven years old was the London [TS]

00:17:10   Philharmonic Orchestra recording the [TS]

00:17:12   star wars the music and like very you [TS]

00:17:14   know Luke's thin layers then what have [TS]

00:17:16   you and literally it wasn't a whole [TS]

00:17:18   soundtrack and he took up one side of [TS]

00:17:21   the album and the other side was I think [TS]

00:17:22   it was host the planets it was really [TS]

00:17:25   strange but they had a x-wing on the [TS]

00:17:27   front so that was good enough for me and [TS]

00:17:29   happen when I was when I was a small [TS]

00:17:31   child and I was t think I i chewed on [TS]

00:17:34   the foot of a wookie [TS]

00:17:36   that's my Star Wars yeah i still have [TS]

00:17:40   the first game that i bought myself well [TS]

00:17:42   darkness will talk about it was rebel [TS]

00:17:44   salt for the pci well there's century I [TS]

00:17:48   still got it in the covered my favorite [TS]

00:17:50   games even though i can't play anymore [TS]

00:17:51   computer doesn't take the desks classic [TS]

00:17:55   game maybe the closest comparison that i [TS]

00:17:58   can think of for for younger listeners [TS]

00:18:04   is like Harry Potter like think of how [TS]

00:18:07   the reason now there's a whole [TS]

00:18:08   generation who just know Harry Potter [TS]

00:18:11   because it's everywhere they've also in [TS]

00:18:13   all the movies they've read all the [TS]

00:18:15   books then all the characters than all [TS]

00:18:16   the actors and they assume that [TS]

00:18:17   everybody their age also knows [TS]

00:18:20   harrypotter harrypotter is their thing [TS]

00:18:22   if you are that age you know Harry [TS]

00:18:24   Potter in the same way and that's what [TS]

00:18:26   it's like for people our age we just [TS]

00:18:28   know Star Wars it's just there and as [TS]

00:18:32   you say it becomes his dominance thing [TS]

00:18:34   becomes so huge and there's such an [TS]

00:18:36   emotional connection to because it's [TS]

00:18:38   part of childhood that it's really [TS]

00:18:40   difficult to actually be objective and [TS]

00:18:42   sort of critical and I mean that in the [TS]

00:18:44   you know traditional in the sense of the [TS]

00:18:47   movies because you have such a [TS]

00:18:49   deep-seated attachment to them and you [TS]

00:18:52   know you wouldn't have that attachment [TS]

00:18:53   if they weren't great movies [TS]

00:18:54   let's not forget that he's aligned of [TS]

00:18:56   you know all intellectual stuff aside if [TS]

00:19:00   they weren't actually just really good [TS]

00:19:01   entertainment then we wouldn't have that [TS]

00:19:03   emotional connection to them but yeah [TS]

00:19:06   that's kind of I think that's the best [TS]

00:19:07   comparison that I've been able to come [TS]

00:19:09   up with to make people realize water [TS]

00:19:11   original Star Wars was like and for this [TS]

00:19:14   I of i did the whole the full circu sir [TS]

00:19:16   I avoid spoilers i only watch the [TS]

00:19:18   official trailers I didn't read any [TS]

00:19:21   transmedia stuff i didn't watch any [TS]

00:19:23   transmedia stuff I I didn't even know [TS]

00:19:26   the names of the characters going [TS]

00:19:29   glasses and while i didn't know i was [TS]

00:19:31   unable to escape that [TS]

00:19:33   yeah yeah I I knew nothing and I i loved [TS]

00:19:38   it i absolutely loved it and I think [TS]

00:19:40   that going in spoiler-free actually [TS]

00:19:42   really helped in that sense because i [TS]

00:19:44   had no expectations i literally had no [TS]

00:19:48   no sort of preconceived notions of [TS]

00:19:50   anything about this movie and I'm just [TS]

00:19:53   gonna spoiler-free as well why didn't [TS]

00:19:55   the names of the main characters edit [TS]

00:19:57   about big talk to switch the the terror [TS]

00:20:00   and fear of the disappointment thing and [TS]

00:20:03   I didn't get to see it till saturday so [TS]

00:20:05   by then loads of people have been going [TS]

00:20:07   to can't see it so I can manage to get a [TS]

00:20:09   few like I just give me a one-word [TS]

00:20:11   non-spoilery opinion of it just say easy [TS]

00:20:13   good physically and everyone said well [TS]

00:20:18   it was all positive so it's like okay [TS]

00:20:20   it's not going to be terrible [TS]

00:20:21   I can relax and as soon as in fact as [TS]

00:20:23   soon as the scroll came up and i read [TS]

00:20:25   the first three sentences i was like I [TS]

00:20:28   can breathe and it's gonna be fine [TS]

00:20:30   nothing about trade disputes nothing [TS]

00:20:32   about it was really just I think we had [TS]

00:20:34   an advantage in the UK because we saw [TS]

00:20:36   like more than 24 hours before the [TS]

00:20:38   Americans where we do you really hate [TS]

00:20:41   you for this [TS]

00:20:42   I didn't actually I saw on friday so [TS]

00:20:44   well i think that i saw in the midnight [TS]

00:20:46   showing so like there was no real chance [TS]

00:20:49   of being spoiled unless any Australians [TS]

00:20:51   that popped up and i mean it was it was [TS]

00:20:55   good because i was going into it without [TS]

00:20:57   knowing whether it was good or not [TS]

00:20:59   because if if everybody had told me very [TS]

00:21:02   that this was a really good film then I [TS]

00:21:05   would have had more problems I think I i [TS]

00:21:08   tried to avoid even that because i was [TS]

00:21:10   super worried i just switched I closed [TS]

00:21:12   down Twitter I didn't go on / i mean III [TS]

00:21:15   barely all I did was read my email [TS]

00:21:17   basically and read more replies on [TS]

00:21:19   Twitter from Monday through Friday as [TS]

00:21:23   most of what i did and yet still I got [TS]

00:21:25   white people replies where I post things [TS]

00:21:27   may be like oh don't worry i think [TS]

00:21:29   you'll enjoy them i don't even think [TS]

00:21:32   you'll enjoy the bet where is why I only [TS]

00:21:35   wanted a one-word review of it because [TS]

00:21:38   that meant you could keep it didn't [TS]

00:21:40   oversell with one word right [TS]

00:21:43   yea though well apartment unless unless [TS]

00:21:44   everybody said fantastic you know [TS]

00:21:46   amazing spectacular [TS]

00:21:48   yeah yeah but i think its era well no [TS]

00:21:51   one did that it was it was so I feel ok [TS]

00:21:53   so there were rocks sense for people i [TS]

00:21:56   got before we go any further actually [TS]

00:21:57   let [TS]

00:21:58   just let's for people who are listening [TS]

00:22:00   who if you're listening to this new [TS]

00:22:02   happens in the movie yet I question your [TS]

00:22:05   life choices button sound the spoiler [TS]

00:22:08   horn [TS]

00:22:13   and now we will be because I wanted to [TS]

00:22:16   be careful that we don't get into [TS]

00:22:18   spoiler territory without warning people [TS]

00:22:20   at least so yes now let's carry on so I [TS]

00:22:23   went in and it was the first showing and [TS]

00:22:25   while I may own a full set of Jedi robes [TS]

00:22:28   and possibly an order one lightsaber i [TS]

00:22:30   decided not to let them and just go with [TS]

00:22:33   a sort of understated New Hope is [TS]

00:22:36   t-shirt and I tend to be quite wise [TS]

00:22:38   because aside from one princess layer [TS]

00:22:40   and I think this is all be princess [TS]

00:22:42   layer and nobody's an actual zombie [TS]

00:22:45   James sorry yeah nobody else at the [TS]

00:22:48   cinema was dressed up at all and I don't [TS]

00:22:50   know if that was because people have [TS]

00:22:51   been burned in the past by this dressing [TS]

00:22:53   up and then finding out the films were [TS]

00:22:55   terrible [TS]

00:22:56   oh and they didn't want to commit until [TS]

00:22:58   they knew that the film was good or if [TS]

00:23:00   it was just that this was a Glasgow and [TS]

00:23:02   wandering around in your dressing that [TS]

00:23:04   was money first ought to be on his [TS]

00:23:05   Believe generally friend apart we we had [TS]

00:23:10   we had some people in dress up at my [TS]

00:23:12   local theater here which is in service [TS]

00:23:13   or suburban Boston area there was a [TS]

00:23:15   there was a quite good [TS]

00:23:17   Cloud City hon and layout as a couple [TS]

00:23:20   which was excellent [TS]

00:23:21   haha yeah i think was in there I feel [TS]

00:23:24   like there might have been a BBA to like [TS]

00:23:26   it was it was pretty good wasn't like [TS]

00:23:27   that unlike having been to Star Wars [TS]

00:23:28   Celebration earlier this year play [TS]

00:23:30   hiding around zero without taking up [TS]

00:23:32   three seats in this and you know I'm [TS]

00:23:34   people come up with their very clever [TS]

00:23:36   things I think it's like a hacked it was [TS]

00:23:38   like a little BB a have just the head [TS]

00:23:40   it was pretty good though I remember [TS]

00:23:42   doing that but yeah having seen the the [TS]

00:23:44   costumes tried it out at the star wars [TS]

00:23:46   celebration this year and this was like [TS]

00:23:48   it was good like more than you see for [TS]

00:23:50   most movie openings for sure but not [TS]

00:23:52   quite that level even in fact one of the [TS]

00:23:53   people that we went with actually my [TS]

00:23:55   friend had a great ray costume and so [TS]

00:23:58   clearly had been studying all the all [TS]

00:24:00   the trailers and and posters and [TS]

00:24:02   everything beforehand to make that which [TS]

00:24:03   was pretty cool i was delighted to note [TS]

00:24:06   the the i went to a 730 p.m. showing on [TS]

00:24:10   the friday which is kind of like [TS]

00:24:13   primetime cinema time obviously but I [TS]

00:24:16   was delighted to see that the world a [TS]

00:24:18   lot of kids in the audience a lot of I [TS]

00:24:19   mean obviously a lot of people my age [TS]

00:24:21   taking their kids along you know sort of [TS]

00:24:24   nostalgic purposes and all that [TS]

00:24:26   yeah just a lot of kids and the kids all [TS]

00:24:28   really enjoyed it you know you could [TS]

00:24:30   hear them all gasping and whooping and [TS]

00:24:33   stuff while the film was on and then [TS]

00:24:34   coming out afterwards they all clearly [TS]

00:24:36   had really enjoyed it and I'm talking [TS]

00:24:38   kids you know between the ages of six [TS]

00:24:40   seven and maybe you know 11 or 12 a good [TS]

00:24:43   fairly good range so that I thought was [TS]

00:24:45   really really positive and I just want [TS]

00:24:48   to quickly conclude my point by saying [TS]

00:24:50   the that the mine concern like most of [TS]

00:24:54   us was you know even if it's [TS]

00:24:57   entertaining [TS]

00:24:58   will it have an impact on me will I be [TS]

00:25:00   thinking about it afterwards because [TS]

00:25:02   like say the track reboots JJ Abrams [TS]

00:25:05   strike movies are entertaining movies I [TS]

00:25:08   think they're great movies but I i [TS]

00:25:09   walked out the Sun mr and they just left [TS]

00:25:12   my head you know I wasn't thinking about [TS]

00:25:15   them for days afterwards where is this [TS]

00:25:17   yeah I have been thinking about this [TS]

00:25:20   movie ever since i saw it so I think [TS]

00:25:22   it's safe to say that for me at least it [TS]

00:25:25   has had yes not as much impact as the [TS]

00:25:28   original trilogy but still much more [TS]

00:25:31   impact certainly than the prequels and [TS]

00:25:34   the many many other movies I've seen [TS]

00:25:35   recently is not only and part of that I [TS]

00:25:38   feel like is this the the place of this [TS]

00:25:40   as we discuss a little bit on the main [TS]

00:25:41   show the place of this as the the watch [TS]

00:25:45   pad right you know because unlike so [TS]

00:25:47   many other movies where it's like well [TS]

00:25:49   this movie is going to come out we're [TS]

00:25:50   gonna see if it does well or not and if [TS]

00:25:52   it does well there will be a sequel and [TS]

00:25:54   sometimes usually on threads in that [TS]

00:25:56   first movie where you're like oh you [TS]

00:25:58   know this might come up later and so [TS]

00:25:59   having this situation specifically where [TS]

00:26:01   this foregone conclusion we already knew [TS]

00:26:03   that the sequel's were coming allows you [TS]

00:26:06   to do things that leave the you know [TS]

00:26:09   questions to be answered much more [TS]

00:26:11   blatantly like this is the first chapter [TS]

00:26:13   of a story in the way that a lot of [TS]

00:26:15   movies and not say it's not [TS]

00:26:16   self-contained doesn't tell a story [TS]

00:26:17   within itself but the idea that like [TS]

00:26:20   this is only the tip of the iceberg it [TS]

00:26:22   deliberately leaves a lot of threats [TS]

00:26:24   dangling yeah exactly and provides you [TS]

00:26:26   with so much opportunity to speculate [TS]

00:26:27   about what is going to happen next [TS]

00:26:29   because we already know there is a next [TS]

00:26:30   you know it's not just like a well if [TS]

00:26:32   they decide to do with another one it [TS]

00:26:33   might be about this and as you know this [TS]

00:26:35   there is going to be another one we know [TS]

00:26:37   this leads directly into it and [TS]

00:26:38   therefore we get all this chance to [TS]

00:26:39   speculative [TS]

00:26:40   like what's gonna happen with this in [TS]

00:26:42   this who is this person what does this [TS]

00:26:44   mean you know and so i think that's [TS]

00:26:45   that's a particularly rich vein for [TS]

00:26:47   speculation [TS]

00:26:48   absolutely it does what worried me a bit [TS]

00:26:50   though because that the whole like we're [TS]

00:26:52   gonna get a new star wars film every [TS]

00:26:54   year until we die until you die know [TS]

00:26:58   what it's like to live forever but you [TS]

00:27:03   know it's it's like you know the world [TS]

00:27:05   three films as we all know and now we're [TS]

00:27:08   getting all these new film will they be [TS]

00:27:10   devalued yeah I mean it's like the first [TS]

00:27:12   one obviously is gonna have a massive [TS]

00:27:14   impact but is that you know you're gonna [TS]

00:27:16   have diminishing returns and you know [TS]

00:27:18   with all the spin-off films are we going [TS]

00:27:19   to be because I mean I i really love to [TS]

00:27:22   the first Avengers movie and by the time [TS]

00:27:24   we go into the second avengers movie was [TS]

00:27:26   like well this is kind of good but it's [TS]

00:27:28   been more of the same and you know and I [TS]

00:27:31   was just that sort of disappointment and [TS]

00:27:33   slightly jadedness with the the Marvel [TS]

00:27:36   superhero stuff with was beginning to [TS]

00:27:39   kick in i think as long as the the [TS]

00:27:43   alternate movies if you like the sort of [TS]

00:27:45   you know the what are they calling there [TS]

00:27:47   is a name that they're giving them [TS]

00:27:49   oh you know over the anthology films at [TS]

00:27:52   the end always that's it right i was [TS]

00:27:54   tails or some rest on Rogue Squadron all [TS]

00:27:57   that sort of stuff as long as that I [TS]

00:27:58   think as long as those are disconnected [TS]

00:28:00   enough from the main narrative of the [TS]

00:28:03   main movies that you know hopefully will [TS]

00:28:07   avoid that fatigue because I know what [TS]

00:28:11   you mean yeah it has started to set in [TS]

00:28:13   to an extent with the Marvel movies but [TS]

00:28:14   on the other hand we've had a fast and [TS]

00:28:17   furious movie every year for the past [TS]

00:28:19   three years and they've all been [TS]

00:28:20   brilliant [TS]

00:28:21   so that's well above 3 no 2 no no I'm [TS]

00:28:26   saying for the past three years ever [TS]

00:28:27   since Fast Five basically um so you know [TS]

00:28:30   it can be done and with different [TS]

00:28:32   directors as well that helps hopefully [TS]

00:28:34   keep things fresh [TS]

00:28:35   so I'm just looking at the poster here [TS]

00:28:37   on the wikipedia pages of remembered [TS]

00:28:40   when i saw the poster I at first thought [TS]

00:28:44   that the woman was holding some kind of [TS]

00:28:49   Darth Maul like lightsaber staff and [TS]

00:28:53   then I look closer [TS]

00:28:54   realize that that's the guy in the masks [TS]

00:28:56   lightsaber and she's just kind of normal [TS]

00:28:58   stuff and I actually thought oh they do [TS]

00:29:01   that's a bit of a cop-out they want you [TS]

00:29:03   to think that she's a Jedi but actually [TS]

00:29:05   she's not it's just an optical illusion [TS]

00:29:07   hey you went too far you went too far [TS]

00:29:09   past the exact opposite with that I [TS]

00:29:13   thought oh you want you to enter she's [TS]

00:29:15   gonna get double pleats like silver at [TS]

00:29:16   some point despite the fact that all the [TS]

00:29:19   problem of stuff was suggesting but it's [TS]

00:29:20   all going to be what's it been he was [TS]

00:29:23   the Jedi right well including the main [TS]

00:29:26   poster he's holding the blue lightsaber [TS]

00:29:28   in the post yeah right and I oh I looked [TS]

00:29:31   at that poster and then there were [TS]

00:29:32   people saying well as terrible as a [TS]

00:29:34   really big spoiler on that and only that [TS]

00:29:36   was and i will look back and I hadn't [TS]

00:29:39   seen the sort of Death Star like a ball [TS]

00:29:41   that was in the background of the show [TS]

00:29:43   guys just sit [TS]

00:29:45   I don't know but I was like kind of when [TS]

00:29:47   it's done all the people in the front [TS]

00:29:48   that didn't see this giant thing but [TS]

00:29:50   then i but then is not really a spoiler [TS]

00:29:52   though the evil empire spines of super [TS]

00:29:55   weapon would never have guessed a [TS]

00:29:57   bowl-shaped super weapon but i did [TS]

00:29:59   decide [TS]

00:30:00   basically I looked at it again I thought [TS]

00:30:01   no that's actually it's PBS dad haha [TS]

00:30:05   bb7 I you know it's funny when i was at [TS]

00:30:08   the star wars celebration in April they [TS]

00:30:10   had a bunch of the costumes from the [TS]

00:30:12   force awakens and we were sort of hours [TS]

00:30:14   they were the couple my friends were [TS]

00:30:15   debating like do we go in yes miss [TS]

00:30:17   boiler and and me and one of my friends [TS]

00:30:19   ended up going in and the one thing that [TS]

00:30:23   was we we thought was basically oh this [TS]

00:30:25   is this is kind of a spoiler that we got [TS]

00:30:27   away from that was they had john-boy I [TS]

00:30:29   guess costume and headlights it had a [TS]

00:30:31   concept drawing attachment in which [TS]

00:30:33   there was a lightsaber on his belt and [TS]

00:30:35   we're like our giveaway that he had a [TS]

00:30:38   light saver which of course is also kind [TS]

00:30:40   of a fake-out so in that way it was [TS]

00:30:42   funny because it's set like you guys [TS]

00:30:43   with the posters set me up thinking in [TS]

00:30:45   one direction and of course that's not [TS]

00:30:47   entirely true i was just overthinking [TS]

00:30:50   get it turns out there was a spoiler [TS]

00:30:52   ship that I did see which was annoying [TS]

00:30:54   which was housing for was asked what his [TS]

00:30:59   favorite scene of the film was and he [TS]

00:31:01   said something like always raise [TS]

00:31:03   lightsaber battle at the end [TS]

00:31:05   I don't know I'm that was like at least [TS]

00:31:10   everything you didn't say getting [TS]

00:31:11   stabbed can't get that baby died i'm [TS]

00:31:17   doing good choice [TS]

00:31:18   Harrison forget your good choice just [TS]

00:31:20   keep it is out can we just take a moment [TS]

00:31:22   actually to give props to you mention [TS]

00:31:25   BBA and to praise the animators of bb-8 [TS]

00:31:30   because you know he's a character like [TS]

00:31:32   r2d2 who you know save nothing just [TS]

00:31:35   bleep boobs nothing intelligible to [TS]

00:31:37   human ears and yet like r2 and i would [TS]

00:31:40   say actually even more than r2 they give [TS]

00:31:43   him such an amazing personality he is an [TS]

00:31:47   instantly likable lovable character with [TS]

00:31:52   yet nothing but you know two balls and [TS]

00:31:55   some bleeps and bloops he had physically [TS]

00:31:57   robotic hamster below her emotions well [TS]

00:32:00   he does sometimes that's so cute [TS]

00:32:02   yes well in the rocking back and forth [TS]

00:32:04   and you know tilting his head to sort of [TS]

00:32:06   be sad and things like that and yes the [TS]

00:32:08   the thumbs up with the lighter was you [TS]

00:32:10   know that everybody loves my firm if I'm [TS]

00:32:13   correct I think he was it was a purely a [TS]

00:32:16   physical prop so yes Papa tiered [TS]

00:32:19   basically well i don't think i don't [TS]

00:32:20   know about purely i'm sure there were [TS]

00:32:21   some parts where they CGI'd in but yes [TS]

00:32:24   and this is that the close-up stuff [TS]

00:32:25   where it was with the actors yes that [TS]

00:32:27   was a physical problem which is kind of [TS]

00:32:30   amazing [TS]

00:32:31   yeah I mean that was the thing just as a [TS]

00:32:33   slight tangent that the the things that [TS]

00:32:35   bothered me the most in the film were [TS]

00:32:37   the the cgi characters because [TS]

00:32:41   everything was so real and you know [TS]

00:32:44   let's build all the x-wings let's do all [TS]

00:32:46   this and then the smoke and the mass [TS]

00:32:50   kanata Angeles and the trader and the [TS]

00:32:53   rest are they were the four-seat big cgi [TS]

00:32:56   Grange's and they kind of go is tricked [TS]

00:32:59   into thinking they were real because [TS]

00:33:00   everything else looks so real so I just [TS]

00:33:02   assumed that pie that of course it will [TS]

00:33:05   be CGI don't be ridiculous to me that [TS]

00:33:09   the smoke one I think just was that was [TS]

00:33:11   the the thing that took me at the moon [TS]

00:33:13   fee and and it's going yeah well it's [TS]

00:33:17   golem and I like the fact that he liked [TS]

00:33:19   clearly have something Polian complex [TS]

00:33:21   and is about the size of yoda because he [TS]

00:33:23   possessed himself as that everybody's [TS]

00:33:25   assuming that all yeah but I do feel [TS]

00:33:29   like it is kind of a that it feels more [TS]

00:33:31   deliberate to me i agree that i found it [TS]

00:33:33   a little more off-putting even then you [TS]

00:33:35   know the temperature of the Emperor's [TS]

00:33:36   giant head and empire strikes back but i [TS]

00:33:39   have to wonder if thats a deliberate [TS]

00:33:41   obfuscation it certainly seems like it [TS]

00:33:43   but I and I really liked mass as a [TS]

00:33:45   character i do agree with the people who [TS]

00:33:48   are asking like could could win because [TS]

00:33:50   that's the fabulous lupita nyong'o and [TS]

00:33:52   you couldn't we have just had her you [TS]

00:33:53   know as a as a live actor and I feel [TS]

00:33:56   like it probably would have been felt [TS]

00:33:58   like a very different character in some [TS]

00:33:59   ways but i would have been totally okay [TS]

00:34:02   with that because she's obviously [TS]

00:34:03   fabulous and I she does a great job with [TS]

00:34:06   that like CGI character that might be my [TS]

00:34:08   favorite CGI character i thought the [TS]

00:34:11   character was good it was just visually [TS]

00:34:13   I think it took me all right and also [TS]

00:34:14   the fact that as soon as I thought of [TS]

00:34:16   Edna mode from the incredibles yeah that [TS]

00:34:18   was yeah I guess the kid of her in Yoda [TS]

00:34:22   I kept thinking of Hetty from NCIS los [TS]

00:34:24   it's and i was i was thinking about [TS]

00:34:29   these cgi creatures and yet it looks [TS]

00:34:30   like this four main cgi not humans in [TS]

00:34:33   the movie and they're all obviously cgi [TS]

00:34:36   like none of that none of them sort of [TS]

00:34:38   passed the test of liked or didn't [TS]

00:34:40   realize I was CGI but sorry Liz [TS]

00:34:45   sometimes they're easily falls but I [TS]

00:34:49   then I was thinking about it more and [TS]

00:34:53   especially when i saw it again and I [TS]

00:34:54   thought you know is this any worse then [TS]

00:34:57   things like the rancor or the hot one / [TS]

00:35:00   or yoda-like in the original trilogy [TS]

00:35:02   where they were either puppets or stop [TS]

00:35:04   motion and it's not like we didn't know [TS]

00:35:06   you know it's not like we couldn't tell [TS]

00:35:09   that they were special effects as well [TS]

00:35:11   you know I were going to argue with you [TS]

00:35:12   on that point on Yoda who I [TS]

00:35:14   victory yeah there's a conscious [TS]

00:35:17   knowledge certainly that this is not a [TS]

00:35:19   real thing but just even going back and [TS]

00:35:21   watching that and knowing that he's not [TS]

00:35:23   real [TS]

00:35:24   there's something either as an animus [TS]

00:35:26   like a human animus to him because of [TS]

00:35:29   the fact that there is a a person [TS]

00:35:31   portraying it in like a very physical [TS]

00:35:33   way that that always that I find much [TS]

00:35:35   more plausible and wrong with the [TS]

00:35:38   performance is amazing and you know i [TS]

00:35:40   mean the Dark Crystal is one of my [TS]

00:35:42   favorite movies ever and that's the same [TS]

00:35:44   basically the same sort of perpetrators [TS]

00:35:46   Yoda you know I have nothing against it [TS]

00:35:48   and I think it's it was amazing school [TS]

00:35:50   is certainly better than the CGI Yoda [TS]

00:35:51   that we can 30 i will agree with you on [TS]

00:35:54   the sense of the rancor you know having [TS]

00:35:55   gone back like I said just watch Jedi [TS]

00:35:57   you know it's clear to me that based on [TS]

00:35:58   just sort of the camera angles and stuff [TS]

00:36:00   that the rancor is clearly a model still [TS]

00:36:02   scary enough for my like you know my [TS]

00:36:04   cousin's kids a little yeah but it's it [TS]

00:36:07   is it is there's always gonna Ray [TS]

00:36:08   Harryhausen you know Jason the [TS]

00:36:10   arrangements with the other skeletons [TS]

00:36:12   weekend we know it's a special effect [TS]

00:36:13   but that doesn't make you spend at this [TS]

00:36:16   point right but I think for the rest of [TS]

00:36:18   the film and you know it's something [TS]

00:36:20   that you could look at twenty years [TS]

00:36:22   later or something or 30 years later and [TS]

00:36:24   it it would hold up and I think that's [TS]

00:36:27   one reason why i think the the original [TS]

00:36:29   film's hold up especially in there sort [TS]

00:36:31   of d specialized let's strip everything [TS]

00:36:33   out of them versions because you know [TS]

00:36:36   they were physical things that they were [TS]

00:36:38   filming and you know that this film is [TS]

00:36:43   in no way as bad as the prequels in [TS]

00:36:45   terms of the cgi stuff but those those [TS]

00:36:47   are the things i think this stuck out [TS]

00:36:49   because everything else was just right [TS]

00:36:52   I think it's what I will definitely [TS]

00:36:54   having having real sets made I think it [TS]

00:36:57   must make such a huge difference the [TS]

00:36:58   actors performances as well as just the [TS]

00:37:00   way you're looking at you didn't feel [TS]

00:37:01   that you were watching someone else play [TS]

00:37:03   a god-awful computer game for most of [TS]

00:37:05   the time and so yeah I walk you and [TS]

00:37:08   always preferable work to CGI even when [TS]

00:37:11   it's like cheap model work because it [TS]

00:37:14   just it will look better if it doesn't [TS]

00:37:16   vision is going to be better in 10 or 20 [TS]

00:37:17   years time anyway and and I think hear [TS]

00:37:20   it did feel that either did you see GI [TS]

00:37:23   it was in service to the actual real [TS]

00:37:25   stuff rather than trying to use to [TS]

00:37:27   replace anything [TS]

00:37:28   real thats that's one of the things that [TS]

00:37:29   I'm really looking forward to is [TS]

00:37:31   whatever massive extended boxset blu-ray [TS]

00:37:34   we get with all the making of stuff [TS]

00:37:36   because it's probably time to CGI that [TS]

00:37:38   was probably a ton of CGI that we not [TS]

00:37:41   see [TS]

00:37:42   oh it yet this is the thing like these [TS]

00:37:44   four creatures are the obvious cgi but [TS]

00:37:46   i'm sure there isn't a frame of this [TS]

00:37:48   movie that it doesn't have some CGI [TS]

00:37:51   right somewhere and that's why you [TS]

00:37:52   should be used yeah where it can be put [TS]

00:37:55   in seamlessly so you don't notice it not [TS]

00:37:57   to be used as the whole construction and [TS]

00:37:59   foundations of European media exactly [TS]

00:38:02   exactly so [TS]

00:38:04   alright let's move onto characters let's [TS]

00:38:05   elephant in the room [TS]

00:38:07   I don't know she is in the background [TS]

00:38:11   wandering around with the stormtroopers [TS]

00:38:12   cgi yeah i got his judgments in this [TS]

00:38:15   movie like a better boat is that what [TS]

00:38:17   you're trying to tell me know so we are [TS]

00:38:20   we were talking about this offer before [TS]

00:38:22   we started there is this whole sort of [TS]

00:38:25   there's the backlash you know these [TS]

00:38:27   people doing their hot takes about how [TS]

00:38:30   this is actually a terrible movie and [TS]

00:38:31   we're all falls and you know going right [TS]

00:38:33   in its tracks [TS]

00:38:35   you don't believe don't go on the [TS]

00:38:36   internet it's a terrible place and Ray [TS]

00:38:40   people complaining the Ray is Mary Sue [TS]

00:38:42   and she's overpowered only the small and [TS]

00:38:46   right i want to get specifically our [TS]

00:38:48   lives i want to get your opinion about [TS]

00:38:50   that [TS]

00:38:51   oh my gold into what they can I swear in [TS]

00:38:54   this podcast you're probably get bread [TS]

00:38:58   and if anything deserves it LOL i'll [TS]

00:39:00   switch to Britishness what the bleeding [TS]

00:39:03   Dickens been on the phone that is that [TS]

00:39:06   three is an absolutely amazing character [TS]

00:39:08   is the character that I deserved at 12 [TS]

00:39:11   years old to get but I didn't get I got [TS]

00:39:14   those bloomin prequels instead this is [TS]

00:39:17   the star wars movie I should have had as [TS]

00:39:19   I was growing up [TS]

00:39:20   re is amazing and the actor is obviously [TS]

00:39:24   fantastic but here we have she is [TS]

00:39:27   getting the major here work of the story [TS]

00:39:29   its hardness to our questions just a [TS]

00:39:31   slow realization going into movie was [TS]

00:39:33   made my mean pleasure was this just [TS]

00:39:36   slowly being realizing that she was the [TS]

00:39:40   one who is going to invite to be the [TS]

00:39:41   hero at the end it was all focused on [TS]

00:39:43   hard the other ones weren't work for [TS]

00:39:45   golden but they were working in service [TS]

00:39:48   to her central pillar type thing [TS]

00:39:50   overpowered don't be pleading ridiculous [TS]

00:39:52   she's doing some little force tricks so [TS]

00:39:54   she can work out how to do it [TS]

00:39:56   it's interesting because it's doing a [TS]

00:39:58   different thing to what we've seen [TS]

00:39:59   before [TS]

00:39:59   it's not someone being trained by a [TS]

00:40:01   mentor she has no manager is figuring [TS]

00:40:03   out by herself [TS]

00:40:04   that's different and interesting and of [TS]

00:40:07   course she's a flawed characters so [TS]

00:40:08   emotionally sharp edges everywhere [TS]

00:40:12   because she's had to be because she shut [TS]

00:40:14   down and isolated and a bit grumpy and [TS]

00:40:17   techy and she just happens to be really [TS]

00:40:20   good at engineering as well [TS]

00:40:21   well it makes sense given the context [TS]

00:40:23   that she's out scavenging all this may [TS]

00:40:25   take all over the place [TS]

00:40:27   why not and in order to survive she's [TS]

00:40:28   going to have to keep her little and [TS]

00:40:29   Lancer thing going anyway so I'm ya [TS]

00:40:32   brain was amazing and my actual favorite [TS]

00:40:37   moment and all the Star Wars movies now [TS]

00:40:39   is the moment we get into a fight where [TS]

00:40:42   we know what's happening in the little [TS]

00:40:44   lightsaber starts to see but actually [TS]

00:40:46   seeing it should out the snow past and [TS]

00:40:51   tyler run kangaroo and I knew that and [TS]

00:40:54   into her hands and her igniting it that [TS]

00:40:56   was just that was amazing i I've [TS]

00:40:59   definitely thought that was the best [TS]

00:41:00   that the film it was it was and just [TS]

00:41:03   getting it has been a very good year [TS]

00:41:05   being alone liking science fiction [TS]

00:41:08   things i keep getting things I like and [TS]

00:41:11   pander to a nice it's like this poor [TS]

00:41:12   guys all the time we much makes a [TS]

00:41:14   television yeah exactly 90 percenter [TS]

00:41:16   Italian that's exactly the point and [TS]

00:41:19   that's why these complaints annoy me so [TS]

00:41:21   much is what you have everything else [TS]

00:41:23   including the original trilogy by or the [TS]

00:41:26   man who are complaining they should that [TS]

00:41:29   o ne but yes no amazing i love her ID or [TS]

00:41:32   her i did the the i do collect some star [TS]

00:41:35   wars action pictures mostly the woman [TS]

00:41:37   who are in the movies i did get everyone [TS]

00:41:39   before the film and then feel like oh [TS]

00:41:41   dear God if I just jinxed it is nothing [TS]

00:41:44   terrible's i bought a piece of [TS]

00:41:45   merchandise and so glad i did I love her [TS]

00:41:47   she is my hero i agree with you one [TS]

00:41:51   hundred percent and it's interesting [TS]

00:41:52   that you mentioned her sort of being [TS]

00:41:54   damaged [TS]

00:41:54   character emotionally because that's [TS]

00:41:56   sort of an argument or discussion that I [TS]

00:41:59   saw between several women actually on [TS]

00:42:02   Twitter talking about this a couple of [TS]

00:42:04   days ago and saying that you know what a [TS]

00:42:07   lot of the fanboys are missing is that [TS]

00:42:09   yes she may already know how to do a few [TS]

00:42:11   things that she won't need to be taught [TS]

00:42:14   like she doesn't need to be taught how [TS]

00:42:15   to fly or how to fix a starship or [TS]

00:42:17   whatever but instead what she will have [TS]

00:42:20   and you can see this coming in she's [TS]

00:42:22   gonna have an emotional arc because she [TS]

00:42:23   is clearly so emotionally flawed as a [TS]

00:42:28   character whereas in the original [TS]

00:42:29   trilogy even Luke ok was a bit whiny but [TS]

00:42:32   basically he was pretty much all there [TS]

00:42:35   he just had to learn how to do a few [TS]

00:42:37   things like you know use the Force and [TS]

00:42:38   fight with the lightsaber and stuff yeah [TS]

00:42:40   he knows how to do some of that stuff [TS]

00:42:42   already but she is so damaged [TS]

00:42:44   emotionally and I think a lot of frankly [TS]

00:42:48   male fans are missing that because it's [TS]

00:42:50   not something that we normally get with [TS]

00:42:52   male characters it's not something that [TS]

00:42:55   we normally have to kind of think about [TS]

00:42:56   it as a character Iraq I think whoever I [TS]

00:42:59   i think it's quite actually quite kind [TS]

00:43:02   of a popular one the world it's got [TS]

00:43:04   slightly different emphasis but where [TS]

00:43:06   you have a male character who is like [TS]

00:43:08   emotionally withdrawn and he needs to [TS]

00:43:11   find the right woman to help him heal [TS]

00:43:13   and becoming emotionally rounded person [TS]

00:43:14   that's a fairly common truck and I I [TS]

00:43:18   think seeing that apply to women and 4g [TS]

00:43:21   she i'd love that she is so grumpy in [TS]

00:43:23   taxi throughout it and really quite [TS]

00:43:24   snappy wait it's great because that's [TS]

00:43:27   often those are so often portrayed as [TS]

00:43:29   very negative things on a woman you must [TS]

00:43:31   be look pretty and nice and be happy and [TS]

00:43:33   pandering to everyone around you and she [TS]

00:43:35   doesn't and it's it's fab and just to [TS]

00:43:38   make it extra delightful she's paired [TS]

00:43:40   with with fen who is another very [TS]

00:43:42   emotionally damaged character if you [TS]

00:43:44   look so he's going to have the hero and [TS]

00:43:46   argon whole hero who doesn't have is [TS]

00:43:50   completes the sort of volatility but [TS]

00:43:52   isn't the sort of the little box of the [TS]

00:43:53   trilogy is is the white guy here all [TS]

00:43:57   weekend pile it really well and it sort [TS]

00:43:59   of its it feels so much like it's been [TS]

00:44:02   written by someone who really cares but [TS]

00:44:04   not excluding people from the star wars [TS]

00:44:06   universe [TS]

00:44:07   and instead of oh it's just it makes me [TS]

00:44:11   so sad with the Star Wars movies [TS]

00:44:12   Heather's basically i know there's more [TS]

00:44:13   than one woman but basically there's one [TS]

00:44:15   woman in each vellum and here is a film [TS]

00:44:18   that even if it's not fifty-fifty it's [TS]

00:44:21   still chilly intelligent another one [TS]

00:44:24   it's gorgeous [TS]

00:44:26   one of the things I was going to ask is [TS]

00:44:27   in the cinema what was the gender split [TS]

00:44:30   because in the showing that i saw which [TS]

00:44:33   was you know the first showing it was [TS]

00:44:36   way less than a quarter of the people in [TS]

00:44:38   the cinema were women so is oh wow quite [TS]

00:44:41   heavily biased towards man and that I [TS]

00:44:44   think that'll change yeah i think we [TS]

00:44:46   like I was that was my hope [TS]

00:44:48   basically because this is a film that's [TS]

00:44:49   obviously you know young girls that [TS]

00:44:53   would be absolutely ideal for but then [TS]

00:44:55   that the whole stuff of the disney [TS]

00:44:58   marketing where you know that Ray who [TS]

00:45:01   was as we've said is basically the main [TS]

00:45:02   character isn't featured in the sort of [TS]

00:45:05   the various PACs of figure 4 10 gorgeous [TS]

00:45:09   but I think now that it's out and one [TS]

00:45:11   sort of word spreads that you get what [TS]

00:45:14   you get and you get her interactions [TS]

00:45:16   with leah and you get her interactions [TS]

00:45:18   with Lupita youngest character forgotten [TS]

00:45:21   the neverender jobs their reports so [TS]

00:45:23   delightful and chic their mentoring in [TS]

00:45:26   different ways and it's very good my [TS]

00:45:29   favorite were not favor I would say but [TS]

00:45:33   the bit that made me laugh with Ray more [TS]

00:45:36   than any other in this movie and you [TS]

00:45:38   know the Stormtrooper you will undo [TS]

00:45:40   these restraints yes that was that was [TS]

00:45:41   very funny especially knowing that it [TS]

00:45:42   was Daniel Craig under yes um how did [TS]

00:45:45   you not know it was always like that was [TS]

00:45:48   his cameo created there's tons of [TS]

00:45:50   cameras and this like the and her junk [TS]

00:45:53   dealer guy was in Paris I repair okay [TS]

00:45:56   yeah yeah but my the bit that made me [TS]

00:45:58   laugh with her was you know when her and [TS]

00:46:02   Finn first meet and there's the whole [TS]

00:46:04   like why you keep grabbing my hand like [TS]

00:46:06   I know how to run let go but then when [TS]

00:46:09   they get when the team gets blown up [TS]

00:46:11   attacked by Tie Fighters they get [TS]

00:46:13   blasted back and they're sort of both [TS]

00:46:16   you know recovering they get up and he [TS]

00:46:18   immediately turns around goes you're [TS]

00:46:20   right [TS]

00:46:20   and she's already on her feet and she [TS]

00:46:22   doesn't even say much she just looks at [TS]

00:46:24   me cuz ya yet to come on one I laughed [TS]

00:46:28   so hard at that because there is such [TS]

00:46:30   such an inversion of a stereo too i like [TS]

00:46:33   that where he was running towards the [TS]

00:46:35   fight I menu by the time it gets there [TS]

00:46:37   she's already to meet everybody and he [TS]

00:46:39   just kind of yet she perseveres all that [TS]

00:46:41   will weekend when you watch it again in [TS]

00:46:43   that same just look specifically at [TS]

00:46:44   Daisy Ridley's active just an expression [TS]

00:46:47   she is so good cause she barely says [TS]

00:46:50   anything but our expression says [TS]

00:46:51   everything in that moment it's so good i [TS]

00:46:54   mean there's so many explicit colors [TS]

00:46:55   like this thing where Hannah is trying [TS]

00:46:58   to give her a blaster and she's like I [TS]

00:47:00   can take care of myself and he's like [TS]

00:47:01   yeah I know that's why I'm doing your [TS]

00:47:03   blood that was very good [TS]

00:47:06   yes it was yeah yeah yeah she's she's [TS]

00:47:09   brilliant and like I don't get so you [TS]

00:47:11   know coming at this from the perspective [TS]

00:47:12   of you know a white guy [TS]

00:47:15   yeah i just don't get the people pushing [TS]

00:47:17   back on this like I love fantasy and [TS]

00:47:20   science fiction of all kinds he you know [TS]

00:47:23   and years I've read books with female [TS]

00:47:25   protagonist every book male protagonists [TS]

00:47:27   are certainly a lot more of those [TS]

00:47:29   I just don't get why people are so pissy [TS]

00:47:32   about it yesterday hope that it isn't [TS]

00:47:34   just a loud minority I mean yeah yeah I [TS]

00:47:37   don't know when and I hope not and sorry [TS]

00:47:39   i hope so because I really I I think [TS]

00:47:42   she's a fabulous character I think she's [TS]

00:47:44   fantastic [TS]

00:47:44   I had so many friends especially in the [TS]

00:47:48   comics industry community with young [TS]

00:47:51   daughters and exactly i need to I need [TS]

00:47:54   to talk to them I cannot wait to hear [TS]

00:47:56   what their reaction is going to be about [TS]

00:47:59   this movie and how overjoyed i know they [TS]

00:48:01   are going to be that they can take their [TS]

00:48:03   daughters that you know sort of seven [TS]

00:48:05   eight nine year old daughter's to see a [TS]

00:48:06   Star Wars movie and know that their [TS]

00:48:09   daughter is going to be looking up on [TS]

00:48:10   the screen in going that me [TS]

00:48:12   yeah i mean this is exactly what so you [TS]

00:48:14   know I'm saying I should return the Jedi [TS]

00:48:16   to my cousin's kids who are both girls [TS]

00:48:18   and I'm like I'm super-psyched about [TS]

00:48:20   like now that they've seen you know four [TS]

00:48:22   five and six and like now I get to you [TS]

00:48:24   know we can hopefully we can take them [TS]

00:48:25   to episode seven because i think they [TS]

00:48:27   will be so excited by this you know in [TS]

00:48:29   like you're having character you know [TS]

00:48:31   characters who look like them up on the [TS]

00:48:33   screen and who will get to [TS]

00:48:34   like no kick ass with a lightsaber and [TS]

00:48:36   you know that's awesome that's great i [TS]

00:48:38   just i really hate the this backlash to [TS]

00:48:42   this just makes me sad it makes me upset [TS]

00:48:44   in you know and it's just like I wish [TS]

00:48:46   these people would just sort of get over [TS]

00:48:48   that and just enjoy enjoy a film that [TS]

00:48:51   has a strong you know that's a strong [TS]

00:48:53   female character but like to see a [TS]

00:48:54   fully-realized just exclusively I just [TS]

00:48:57   just a good character that she's wrong L [TS]

00:48:59   is almost even secondary to that right [TS]

00:49:00   like you know it's great that she's [TS]

00:49:02   wonder like why are you fixating on that [TS]

00:49:04   whatever woman it's not secondary [TS]

00:49:06   because there are so few of them it [TS]

00:49:08   really matters and I strong people [TS]

00:49:11   character phrases a very i never use [TS]

00:49:13   that I practice interesting female [TS]

00:49:15   character i'd also want weak female [TS]

00:49:17   characters who are cowards and [TS]

00:49:19   frightened terrified scream as well I [TS]

00:49:21   want to fill in broad range of all [TS]

00:49:23   humanity things [TS]

00:49:25   yeah I want to say not that I didn't [TS]

00:49:26   mean strong as it only physically or [TS]

00:49:28   emotionally stronger as like a a strong [TS]

00:49:30   character a character was built well a [TS]

00:49:32   three-dimensional character and I you [TS]

00:49:34   know sometimes misunderstood phrase that [TS]

00:49:35   is nation exactly they're already well [TS]

00:49:37   lately wrong emphasis [TS]

00:49:38   yeah yeah the well-developed character [TS]

00:49:40   who is not just like they're as the [TS]

00:49:42   girlfriend or someone to be like as in [TS]

00:49:45   so many you know franchises killed off [TS]

00:49:48   to give the male protagonist a reason to [TS]

00:49:50   go do their thing right like all of that [TS]

00:49:52   is terrible and it's just a little light [TS]

00:49:54   it does matter [TS]

00:49:55   I mean there's a there's a wonderful [TS]

00:49:57   line that just weeding gave an interview [TS]

00:49:59   many years ago which I have stolen and [TS]

00:50:01   used myself many many times because I [TS]

00:50:03   write comics and you know books and [TS]

00:50:07   stuff with female protagonists almost [TS]

00:50:10   exclusively not quite squishy but almost [TS]

00:50:12   exclusively and whenever i get asked why [TS]

00:50:14   why is this character or a woman why do [TS]

00:50:16   you write you know focus on writing [TS]

00:50:18   strong female characters i always give [TS]

00:50:20   the same after the just we can get which [TS]

00:50:22   is because it's 2015 and you're still [TS]

00:50:24   asking me that question [TS]

00:50:26   it's a very when he said it was 2003 but [TS]

00:50:29   you know your hands are getting but you [TS]

00:50:31   get the point [TS]

00:50:32   hey I didn't mean to say that it's [TS]

00:50:34   unimportant that she is a female [TS]

00:50:36   character obviously you know I think [TS]

00:50:38   that's it's tremendously gratifying to [TS]

00:50:41   see that in a in a Star Wars story [TS]

00:50:43   honestly because why not [TS]

00:50:44   I guess is like they always the thing [TS]

00:50:46   come down to is likewise [TS]

00:50:47   there's no conceivable reason this [TS]

00:50:49   should be the domain of you know of of [TS]

00:50:51   men in any way and you know say what you [TS]

00:50:54   want for the the prequels but at least [TS]

00:50:56   they did you know develop you know [TS]

00:50:58   female Jedi they had like a little bit [TS]

00:51:00   more representation in some of those [TS]

00:51:02   like you know whether than in the [TS]

00:51:03   original trilogy we're all of this Jedi [TS]

00:51:06   that we see our men and especially if [TS]

00:51:08   you can go on and watch the Clone Wars [TS]

00:51:10   or Star Wars rebels TV series in which [TS]

00:51:12   there are many female characters who [TS]

00:51:14   play really important roles in our [TS]

00:51:15   awesome you know it's it's great to see [TS]

00:51:18   that reflected in the in the main [TS]

00:51:20   franchise have you seen the I think it's [TS]

00:51:23   the sort of lego star wars droid tails i [TS]

00:51:27   think the little a TV series because i [TS]

00:51:31   know of them but i have wanted that [TS]

00:51:32   they're fantastic the most recent what I [TS]

00:51:34   saw had the best line in it and somebody [TS]

00:51:37   says to you de there aren't many women [TS]

00:51:39   in the star wars universe or something [TS]

00:51:40   like that and he says men fix this in [TS]

00:51:43   the future shall we [TS]

00:51:44   they're very good and self-referential [TS]

00:51:48   the things yet and in the prequels where [TS]

00:51:50   we do have a lot of more at least not a [TS]

00:51:53   lot of women and in the background [TS]

00:51:54   playing Jedi and suchlike in effect a [TS]

00:51:57   bit parts of you got any lines at all [TS]

00:51:58   the nice thing is the dead t quite a lot [TS]

00:52:00   of those in the Clone Wars and give them [TS]

00:52:02   actual character things which I schools [TS]

00:52:05   is one minor redeeming feature of the [TS]

00:52:07   prequel movies it's got cool north and [TS]

00:52:09   oh my god Star Wars rebels is amazing [TS]

00:52:12   again it just makes me better that I was [TS]

00:52:15   not given this at the appropriate age [TS]

00:52:17   because Hera who's piloting the ship [TS]

00:52:19   she's at we like smuggler pilot with a [TS]

00:52:22   smuggler shit she's like oh oh you're [TS]

00:52:25   the capture that clean star wars and the [TS]

00:52:28   old republic it because I like smuggling [TS]

00:52:31   and yeah its just oh it's just you feel [TS]

00:52:34   validated like a real person when you [TS]

00:52:37   see reflections on the television it's [TS]

00:52:39   great exactly and the whole business of [TS]

00:52:41   her being overpowered as well again when [TS]

00:52:43   i watched it again i was really watching [TS]

00:52:45   for this and I you may have seen it [TS]

00:52:48   floating around online it's become a bit [TS]

00:52:49   of a has been passed around a lot idem a [TS]

00:52:52   graphic talking about the original [TS]

00:52:54   trilogy in pointing out how Luke heart [TS]

00:52:56   and [TS]

00:52:56   veda well on the prequels were all [TS]

00:52:58   incredibly high powered characters you [TS]

00:53:01   know they were all trapped crack shots [TS]

00:53:03   or some pilots great engineers hard was [TS]

00:53:05   multilingual uh huh you know if princess [TS]

00:53:08   fell in love with him [TS]

00:53:09   Luke destroyed the Death Star with his [TS]

00:53:10   eyes closed aveda became the most feared [TS]

00:53:13   sit in the galaxy after being hacked to [TS]

00:53:14   pieces and survived all this stuff and [TS]

00:53:16   yet people are saying ray is overpowered [TS]

00:53:19   because she helps harm fix the [TS]

00:53:23   Millennium Falcon and she beats what is [TS]

00:53:26   clearly a fairly novice Seth in a [TS]

00:53:30   lightsaber fight and he's injured very [TS]

00:53:32   badly injured by the way and she still [TS]

00:53:34   almost gets beaten by him [TS]

00:53:36   so this whole idea that she's [TS]

00:53:39   overpowered is just absolutely absurd [TS]

00:53:41   and I I guarantee if in an alternate [TS]

00:53:44   alternate universe where this is a male [TS]

00:53:46   character not a single person anywhere [TS]

00:53:49   is saying always a bit overpowered that [TS]

00:53:51   character is any we want that matter [TS]

00:53:54   that there are overpowered it's not a [TS]

00:53:55   video game where you have to have some [TS]

00:53:56   sort of you know Bella understand we are [TS]

00:53:59   not these things are fictional people we [TS]

00:54:00   have to be you know exactly as they are [TS]

00:54:02   real life with their hyper spaces and [TS]

00:54:05   laser swords and that's right [TS]

00:54:06   empires and grownup a son draining the [TS]

00:54:10   song that you're orbiting of energy to [TS]

00:54:13   fire web now I mean you know yes its [TS]

00:54:16   star wars and the physics doesn't make [TS]

00:54:18   any sense but that that was the one bit [TS]

00:54:20   that I was like wait a second [TS]

00:54:22   but if we're going to get into arguing [TS]

00:54:24   that ABA can't go on sand then 20 cm [TS]

00:54:29   completely be but that actually is a [TS]

00:54:31   very good point something i had problem [TS]

00:54:33   with was when they actually fired the [TS]

00:54:34   weapon selection crossed arms no matter [TS]

00:54:36   how fast is that energy going because [TS]

00:54:39   they say afterwards that it so it is a [TS]

00:54:41   hyper-lightspeed weapon [TS]

00:54:42   ok that's ok that's fine then I [TS]

00:54:45   obviously missed that line for me [TS]

00:54:47   probably munching popcorn [TS]

00:54:48   I'm oh no I only spotted on on second [TS]

00:54:51   viewing and I'm actually i'm less fine [TS]

00:54:52   with the fact that everybody else sees [TS]

00:54:54   it instantly [TS]

00:54:55   yeah but after detonating bag but but [TS]

00:54:59   calling a hyper-lightspeed is totally [TS]

00:55:02   fine then but there was a comment that [TS]

00:55:04   everybody saw it at once because there [TS]

00:55:06   was a terror [TS]

00:55:07   hyperspace was the club i had that is [TS]

00:55:10   that is that if we say that assumes [TS]

00:55:12   facts not in evidence yeah yeah but i'll [TS]

00:55:13   buy it [TS]

00:55:14   JJ Abrams I think said so but draining [TS]

00:55:17   the Sun less so [TS]

00:55:19   well yeah yeah well I i will say yeah [TS]

00:55:23   that was there there are a lot of things [TS]

00:55:25   to him without me again if you go back [TS]

00:55:26   and look at the original trilogy you [TS]

00:55:28   know for years the nerves of hand weight [TS]

00:55:30   over the Kessel run in 12 parts and yeah [TS]

00:55:32   yeah we need to hang a lantern on here [TS]

00:55:35   we can write about it but you know a [TS]

00:55:38   hell it doesn't really matter it's [TS]

00:55:40   science fiction in this not even science [TS]

00:55:42   fiction it's fantasy right like brothers [TS]

00:55:44   in this isn't our universe projected [TS]

00:55:46   forward space long time ago it's a far [TS]

00:55:48   far away don't worry too much just don't [TS]

00:55:50   worry it's just a show just relax I'm [TS]

00:55:53   but it to talk about sort of bad physics [TS]

00:55:57   and throw back to the original what is [TS]

00:56:00   it with the Empire putting all these [TS]

00:56:02   vital switches and the universe like [TS]

00:56:06   halfway down a cliff face and you know [TS]

00:56:08   like the truly original tractor beam [TS]

00:56:10   around the back of a do you know on a [TS]

00:56:13   tiny little walkway over in a bit but [TS]

00:56:15   that's how you switch the tractor beam [TS]

00:56:17   off is it there's a workplace standards [TS]

00:56:18   in outer space the Empire and the first [TS]

00:56:21   order both are really they don't really [TS]

00:56:23   care too much about employee safety [TS]

00:56:24   their health plans are terrible I don't [TS]

00:56:26   worry but when Ray's climbing down the [TS]

00:56:28   wall in the hangar she sees that switch [TS]

00:56:30   and I'm like why is there even a leaver [TS]

00:56:32   there [TS]

00:56:33   what are you gonna do fly a starship and [TS]

00:56:35   leaned out the window employees to do is [TS]

00:56:36   just like a closet or something [TS]

00:56:38   the engineering teams must like have [TS]

00:56:40   this Union who are look so annoyed and [TS]

00:56:42   pissed off [TS]

00:56:43   they're like okay you know what we're [TS]

00:56:44   going to do guys we can get a clear idea [TS]

00:56:46   of grabbing whatever over there they say [TS]

00:56:49   anything about it then there'll be no [TS]

00:56:52   livre so yeah they're just staring at [TS]

00:56:54   them tapping their foot you wanted a [TS]

00:56:55   lever I think this just seller is the [TS]

00:56:59   sum architect that we haven't seen yet [TS]

00:57:01   and you like really like designing rhyme [TS]

00:57:04   battle stage that was one of my favorite [TS]

00:57:09   another year awards reviews way they [TS]

00:57:11   were like no we were taking up the Death [TS]

00:57:12   Star this was the Death Star [TS]

00:57:14   this is our you what it's just like the [TS]

00:57:16   death star 10 times bigger [TS]

00:57:17   yeah hot even go so long ago [TS]

00:57:19   so about yeah it's a bit like the the [TS]

00:57:24   monty python and the holy grail thing [TS]

00:57:26   with the castles in the swamp isn't it [TS]

00:57:28   burned down fell over and then sank into [TS]

00:57:31   the swamp knob solicit a completely [TS]

00:57:34   seriously of course talking about [TS]

00:57:36   architect the other thing i noticed was [TS]

00:57:38   one of the ways they made it really feel [TS]

00:57:42   like the original trilogy was on [TS]

00:57:43   Starkiller base those like vertical [TS]

00:57:46   lights in the walls which were nowhere [TS]

00:57:49   really to be seen in the prequels butter [TS]

00:57:51   all over the original trilogy and just [TS]

00:57:54   that and the slanting corridor walls and [TS]

00:57:57   things like so many little design [TS]

00:57:59   touches yes that do call back to the [TS]

00:58:01   original trilogy [TS]

00:58:02   yeah that was always a problem with the [TS]

00:58:03   original prequels was as our technology [TS]

00:58:06   progressed out here and yet in the star [TS]

00:58:11   wars universe where I remember thinking [TS]

00:58:13   that the time like how are they going to [TS]

00:58:14   explain how chintzy and terrible [TS]

00:58:17   everything in the original shows at work [TS]

00:58:19   and it turns out that's exactly what [TS]

00:58:20   they did was like the sort of backpedal [TS]

00:58:22   they were like how it was a golden age [TS]

00:58:23   everything was much more organic and lua [TS]

00:58:25   and like okay that's not impossible [TS]

00:58:27   there are plenty of architectural and [TS]

00:58:29   design school changes if you looked you [TS]

00:58:31   know 30 40 years in the past now you [TS]

00:58:34   would see very different things then you [TS]

00:58:35   see today and if you project that [TS]

00:58:37   forward you would be very different [TS]

00:58:38   things as well but it never ended up [TS]

00:58:41   feeling like star wars because of that [TS]

00:58:44   and so I love that they clearly use [TS]

00:58:47   modern technology to build all of these [TS]

00:58:50   sets and everything and yet the design [TS]

00:58:52   of them in the aesthetic of them is does [TS]

00:58:55   not clash with the original trilogy [TS]

00:58:58   running it suddenly done and it's not [TS]

00:59:00   like you have all the same like crazy [TS]

00:59:02   blinking lights and see there's a CRT [TS]

00:59:04   monitor which is sort of how you go in [TS]

00:59:08   the wrong direction about that but it is [TS]

00:59:10   nice they tip their hat without you no [TS]

00:59:12   feeling like that too [TS]

00:59:13   slavish Lee adhere to what the original [TS]

00:59:16   trilogy look like yeah and one other you [TS]

00:59:19   may not notice so much but I'm sure us [TS]

00:59:22   three did one of the thing that made it [TS]

00:59:25   feel like the original trilogy minimal [TS]

00:59:26   amount of British character actors yeah [TS]

00:59:29   even thing that was the that was the [TS]

00:59:31   thing that took me out the film [TS]

00:59:32   absolutely the most was the Scottish [TS]

00:59:34   accent on that gangly yes I don't bear [TS]

00:59:37   the risk free drinks it was an accident [TS]

00:59:40   i don't know the idea was a perfectly [TS]

00:59:41   fine acts and it was just like you know [TS]

00:59:43   this is space while the Scottish people [TS]

00:59:45   were not these people are everywhere any [TS]

00:59:49   Oh have you seen starter but i don't [TS]

00:59:51   know what i mean but it's something like [TS]

00:59:54   in dog poo [TS]

00:59:55   I'm absolutely happy for all the [TS]

00:59:57   Scottish this in it and i love that the [TS]

00:59:59   the doctor [TS]

00:59:59   the doctor [TS]

01:00:00   scottish again and but unless it was [TS]

01:00:03   just it was like the one thing knows I'm [TS]

01:00:06   just gonna English accent and American [TS]

01:00:10   accents haha yeah yeah okay so I'm gonna [TS]

01:00:12   get thrown out of the country for this [TS]

01:00:14   comment but high but it was just it was [TS]

01:00:17   I think it was the thing was when he [TS]

01:00:20   spoke there was a big laugh in the [TS]

01:00:22   cinema because we're really yeah because [TS]

01:00:24   everybody's like what is going on [TS]

01:00:25   otherwise what you are you allowed to go [TS]

01:00:27   so there ya how I didn't really see it [TS]

01:00:31   was dignified groans of my cinema [TS]

01:00:33   another well kind of but the one that [TS]

01:00:36   really got me was Harriet Walter who [TS]

01:00:38   plays the nurse how tattoo don't want to [TS]

01:00:42   lose her face and I kept being like why [TS]

01:00:43   do I know her [TS]

01:00:44   yeah attending to go you must have been [TS]

01:00:46   very brave yeah it's likely that that [TS]

01:00:49   was i'm actually even a little bit sad [TS]

01:00:51   that john-boy it doesn't get to use this [TS]

01:00:53   actual accent though I could see the eye [TS]

01:00:55   could see the same people who are upset [TS]

01:00:57   about rave throwing a fit over who two [TS]

01:00:59   main characters with British accent with [TS]

01:01:02   isn't Star Wars was America [TS]

01:01:06   yeah i did like the the in people did [TS]

01:01:08   not appear the first-order we're [TS]

01:01:09   sticking with the British accent thing [TS]

01:01:12   we even though there are means they're [TS]

01:01:13   all evil but what everything we've [TS]

01:01:15   always been the village but what [TS]

01:01:17   interested me was em in the original [TS]

01:01:19   trilogy the module the officers and the [TS]

01:01:23   contractors from Green shell and [TS]

01:01:25   luxurious turning up naturally they're [TS]

01:01:27   all tending towards middle-aged men [TS]

01:01:29   whereas in this one and the even general [TS]

01:01:33   it was was very young and call you know [TS]

01:01:35   it was a nice nor to the fact that the [TS]

01:01:37   old Empire that have been around for at [TS]

01:01:39   least a generation that was aging a bit [TS]

01:01:40   where is this is a fresh young fascist [TS]

01:01:43   regime and young people are signing up [TS]

01:01:45   and you can get straight to the top of [TS]

01:01:47   you join up young people and want to [TS]

01:01:48   have washed and fashion kill millions [TS]

01:01:50   most of the old people got blowed up so [TS]

01:01:52   also the exactly yeah burn down fell [TS]

01:01:55   over into the swamp and asthma [TS]

01:01:58   yes speaking speaking of minor [TS]

01:02:01   characters [TS]

01:02:02   oh my goodness why I mean I love [TS]

01:02:04   gwendoline christie and nobody nobody so [TS]

01:02:06   I'm sure she will be back but didn't [TS]

01:02:08   feel she was kind of wasted [TS]

01:02:10   yeah i mean it was like she's the boba [TS]

01:02:11   fett [TS]

01:02:12   oh yeah he's a really cool character [TS]

01:02:15   design completely wasted and everybody [TS]

01:02:17   be dressing up as her for years to come [TS]

01:02:20   but maybe a chance for something good [TS]

01:02:22   next week I mean she got like hope so [TS]

01:02:24   yeah they were gonna put down a garbage [TS]

01:02:26   chute and like I trying to really enjoy [TS]

01:02:28   that line though that like this is I [TS]

01:02:30   liked it but I mean she gave up far too [TS]

01:02:33   easily it was like you know you didn't [TS]

01:02:35   she [TS]

01:02:35   until the head all yo kal-el you know [TS]

01:02:38   lower the shields and do everything no [TS]

01:02:39   you won't you'll like these dr. take a [TS]

01:02:42   little more ass [TS]

01:02:43   yeah but yet nobody so she will be back [TS]

01:02:46   and Mars as well there was no even [TS]

01:02:49   though her entire place was completely [TS]

01:02:51   river I assume she's totally fine [TS]

01:02:53   yeah there's nobody so you know she'll [TS]

01:02:55   you don't need your Jabra speaking of [TS]

01:02:57   those ruins did anybody else get a [TS]

01:02:58   really really strong Lord of the Rings [TS]

01:03:01   vibe when the Empire not the Empire [TS]

01:03:04   sorry the first-order landed and [TS]

01:03:07   colorings walking through the ruins [TS]

01:03:09   while the battle goes on i was thinking [TS]

01:03:11   i was Gillian isn't it you know it [TS]

01:03:14   reminded me a little bit of a the end of [TS]

01:03:16   a new hope with the the Mayan temples [TS]

01:03:18   and you haven't for I don't have it's [TS]

01:03:21   like viber that going on which was not [TS]

01:03:23   bad i really enjoyed the design of just [TS]

01:03:25   the outside of the place which almost [TS]

01:03:26   feels like that with the there's almost [TS]

01:03:29   like nepalese prayer flags like many [TS]

01:03:31   flags across the it again it's a nice i [TS]

01:03:35   feel like you do a nice job but this is [TS]

01:03:37   this film does a nice job of the alien [TS]

01:03:39   environments that it does display even [TS]

01:03:42   though some of them are you know things [TS]

01:03:44   that are callbacks like jakku feels very [TS]

01:03:46   much like Tatooine although a little [TS]

01:03:49   more from you know littered with debris [TS]

01:03:51   and a little more sparsely populated [TS]

01:03:53   even and but that's faisal that's very [TS]

01:03:56   populated because they drop some Star [TS]

01:03:58   Destroyers on everything from the [TS]

01:04:01   Greenwich cool was that it [TS]

01:04:02   well was it did feel different tattoo [TS]

01:04:05   which is a pretty impressive given the [TS]

01:04:07   bulls as far as we know their desert [TS]

01:04:09   planets it's and sound everywhere and [TS]

01:04:12   yet you're there is a very much [TS]

01:04:14   different feel to a different culture [TS]

01:04:16   and and obviously jacket looks amazing [TS]

01:04:19   with what we did with the with the [TS]

01:04:21   salvage and the debris just littered [TS]

01:04:24   there that was thinking [TS]

01:04:25   a massive star destroyer the other I [TS]

01:04:27   think that was the moment actually in [TS]

01:04:28   the trailer in the first trailer when I [TS]

01:04:30   saw that bit in the trailer i was like [TS]

01:04:31   'oh sold sold woman yeah it did have the [TS]

01:04:35   same moisture farm like machine [TS]

01:04:38   machinery as x is not a boy stur though [TS]

01:04:40   I mean come on he's still in together [TS]

01:04:42   I really like to the design of the areas [TS]

01:04:46   surrounding the weapon on Starkiller [TS]

01:04:48   base i like to know because it will say [TS]

01:04:50   what you will about the Sun getting [TS]

01:04:52   drained but it is it does provide that [TS]

01:04:54   that lightsaber duel in the dark forest [TS]

01:04:56   which I thought was going to happen just [TS]

01:04:58   as hard eyes as well sure yeah it with [TS]

01:05:01   Melanie knows maybe but i just i love [TS]

01:05:03   the I love the look of the fight in the [TS]

01:05:05   forest with the snow in the trees and [TS]

01:05:08   the darkness like it's just it's it [TS]

01:05:10   looks beautiful and it feels unlike a [TS]

01:05:14   lot of the other Star Wars tools we've [TS]

01:05:15   seen especially you know the more recent [TS]

01:05:18   ones which always seem to end either [TS]

01:05:19   there's lava or there's some other huge [TS]

01:05:22   crazy background that was one of the [TS]

01:05:24   Magnificent about things about this was [TS]

01:05:25   the two seem to take the view of jewel [TS]

01:05:27   back to the original children what made [TS]

01:05:29   it so good around without having anyone [TS]

01:05:32   do the most ridiculous over-the-top [TS]

01:05:33   unlikely feats which were of course all [TS]

01:05:36   times the force but having bits of [TS]

01:05:38   building falling across lava that you [TS]

01:05:40   just happened to jump to just sometimes [TS]

01:05:42   it's just you know [TS]

01:05:43   yeah it really felt like video games [TS]

01:05:46   yeah well more than about the fights and [TS]

01:05:47   the frequency to me felt like watching [TS]

01:05:49   like a kendo exhibition or something [TS]

01:05:51   we're generating that they didn't feel [TS]

01:05:53   like actual fights they felt like people [TS]

01:05:56   showing golf for the benefit of an [TS]

01:05:58   audience and what's interesting about [TS]

01:06:00   them is that they are callbacks to the [TS]

01:06:02   original trilogy i remember you know [TS]

01:06:03   before the prequels came out people [TS]

01:06:06   saying I think Lucas probably saying [TS]

01:06:08   like well you know all we've really seen [TS]

01:06:09   they are untrained like an old men [TS]

01:06:13   untrained boys and like a man who's more [TS]

01:06:16   machine right now you know those are the [TS]

01:06:18   only examples we have of sort of [TS]

01:06:20   lightsaber duels and so when we got to [TS]

01:06:22   the prequels they went like the other [TS]

01:06:24   direction entirely right which is like [TS]

01:06:25   the supertrain hyper competent Jedi [TS]

01:06:28   doing flips and jumps and all sorts of [TS]

01:06:29   crazy acrobatics and now we're back to [TS]

01:06:33   sort of to essentially two kids who [TS]

01:06:36   neither of whom is really super [TS]

01:06:38   well-trained obviously I think [TS]

01:06:39   Lorraine has the edge in training but [TS]

01:06:42   he's not super competent in the way that [TS]

01:06:45   any of those you know prequels character [TS]

01:06:48   roller at best he's probably on par with [TS]

01:06:50   luke from like Empire right you know and [TS]

01:06:53   and so it's interesting to see that [TS]

01:06:56   especially you know when you throw [TS]

01:06:58   things in the next two who clearly is [TS]

01:07:01   just like I've got a baseball bat right [TS]

01:07:03   it's like you don't see what I can do [TS]

01:07:05   with that you know it's it's very [TS]

01:07:07   interesting to see the fight [TS]

01:07:08   choreography you still looks great to my [TS]

01:07:10   eyes and modern but it's also believably [TS]

01:07:12   rough [TS]

01:07:13   yeah and improvised improvisational [TS]

01:07:16   speaking of rain trailers the snow and [TS]

01:07:20   all that [TS]

01:07:20   here's the thing where you all are [TS]

01:07:23   certainly was waiting for the bit where [TS]

01:07:25   he walks into frame and lights the [TS]

01:07:27   lightsaber and then the crossguard like [TS]

01:07:29   where was that the were to the best of [TS]

01:07:32   my knowledge and recollection there were [TS]

01:07:33   four shots in those or four things about [TS]

01:07:36   the trailers over there are several yeah [TS]

01:07:38   well in this movie there's that bit [TS]

01:07:40   where he walks into the forest and we [TS]

01:07:41   see the the four-pronged three-pronged [TS]

01:07:43   lightsaber for the first time there is [TS]

01:07:45   the Stormtrooper the view of the [TS]

01:07:48   Stormtrooper landing craft opening from [TS]

01:07:49   the inside which we never see in the [TS]

01:07:52   movie there is a raised line there were [TS]

01:07:58   stories about what happened and you know [TS]

01:08:00   they cut that with harm talk about the [TS]

01:08:02   forces think it's all true it's all real [TS]

01:08:04   she never says that and a smoke saying [TS]

01:08:10   the dark side and the lights [TS]

01:08:12   yes that part I card that he did say [TS]

01:08:13   that in some of the shots are you know [TS]

01:08:15   obviously as you do oftentimes in [TS]

01:08:17   trailers they cut things differently [TS]

01:08:19   here for example in the in the third [TS]

01:08:21   trailer where they have the minute were [TS]

01:08:23   the the shot of the ship taking off and [TS]

01:08:26   then the shot of Ray kind of looking [TS]

01:08:27   away wistfully which are two different [TS]

01:08:29   shots in the Aviators the scene where [TS]

01:08:32   she's looking wistfully is that the old [TS]

01:08:33   woman scrubbing things and there's the [TS]

01:08:35   scene later on with the with the ship [TS]

01:08:37   taking off so you know can't actually [TS]

01:08:40   there are different elements they're my [TS]

01:08:42   biggest complaint about Native flip some [TS]

01:08:44   shots as well near that sort of editing [TS]

01:08:46   you expect but the fact that there were [TS]

01:08:47   literally shots in there i mean the one [TS]

01:08:50   with with rain especially it's almost as [TS]

01:08:52   if that [TS]

01:08:53   was filmed specifically for the trailer [TS]

01:08:55   because it wouldn't even make much sense [TS]

01:08:57   in if it was in the movie you know right [TS]

01:08:59   right and i think he doesn't even have [TS]

01:09:00   his helmet on at that point either which [TS]

01:09:02   is another I know that's true yeah and [TS]

01:09:04   which I was thinking about but the thing [TS]

01:09:05   that ticks me off them horses that I [TS]

01:09:07   love the trailer music i love the [TS]

01:09:09   trailer music so much and it's all [TS]

01:09:12   specific to the trailer a lot of its [TS]

01:09:14   recut versions of original movie themes [TS]

01:09:17   some of which are used in the score [TS]

01:09:19   elsewhere but those particular [TS]

01:09:21   constructions for the trailers aren't [TS]

01:09:23   anywhere i just want i think we stay [TS]

01:09:25   just throwing them as tracks on the end [TS]

01:09:26   of the soundtrack even that would have [TS]

01:09:28   been plenty fine for me because those [TS]

01:09:29   are so well put together sometimes they [TS]

01:09:31   can't know because there by different [TS]

01:09:33   people [TS]

01:09:34   those are all john williams i I'd first [TS]

01:09:36   certain I mean he's talking about he's [TS]

01:09:38   specifically wrote music for that first [TS]

01:09:40   time is Erica and the other stuff is [TS]

01:09:41   definitely stuff from clearly from [TS]

01:09:44   earlier you know the original trilogy [TS]

01:09:46   essentially the force theme stuff it's [TS]

01:09:47   just the arrangements are slightly [TS]

01:09:49   different right i only say that because [TS]

01:09:51   sometimes some trailers though like will [TS]

01:09:53   use songs that are literally from like [TS]

01:09:56   other movies and some of them will use [TS]

01:09:58   music that is actually written for the [TS]

01:10:00   trailer but by a different composer the [TS]

01:10:03   best example modern example that is the [TS]

01:10:05   music that everybody associates with [TS]

01:10:07   inception [TS]

01:10:08   no not arrogant or thrown right well not [TS]

01:10:13   just that but the just the sort of this [TS]

01:10:15   the string bit yeah with that goes over [TS]

01:10:18   that goes under that rather everybody [TS]

01:10:21   thinks that that's in the movie and it's [TS]

01:10:22   not there's something like that in the [TS]

01:10:24   movie by is a and Zimmer I think I'm but [TS]

01:10:27   that's not the same thing and the music [TS]

01:10:30   in the trailer is a completely different [TS]

01:10:31   track called mindcrime I think or mind [TS]

01:10:35   Radar Online mind heist got there in the [TS]

01:10:39   end by completely from composer and was [TS]

01:10:42   written i believe for that trailer so [TS]

01:10:44   it's not on the original soundtrack even [TS]

01:10:46   you have to if you want to get that I've [TS]

01:10:47   got it you have to buy it separately as [TS]

01:10:49   like its own something because it's yeah [TS]

01:10:52   just a bit different so i wondered if [TS]

01:10:54   that might be the case but you say it's [TS]

01:10:55   not easy is all day i'm pretty sure i [TS]

01:10:57   know for a fact that the first trailer [TS]

01:10:59   was john william so i would really [TS]

01:11:01   assume the next ones were or [TS]

01:11:03   and worse are cobbled together versions [TS]

01:11:05   of stuff from the earlier from the [TS]

01:11:07   original trilogy because it's got all [TS]

01:11:08   the themes just you know it's put [TS]

01:11:10   together indifferently as someone who [TS]

01:11:12   spent a lifetime this thing starts epic [TS]

01:11:14   I i can tell you where all the cuts are [TS]

01:11:16   and where all the like little segways [TS]

01:11:18   are and everything I think one of the [TS]

01:11:20   things that impressed me about the film [TS]

01:11:23   0 means that it was a good film is that [TS]

01:11:26   when i was watching it wasn't really [TS]

01:11:27   deconstructing it and I wasn't something [TS]

01:11:29   so upsetting like going all I like that [TS]

01:11:32   piece of music or that special effect [TS]

01:11:34   doesn't work or that kind of thing I was [TS]

01:11:36   just so totally in it really until it [TS]

01:11:40   ended I mean there's just a couple of [TS]

01:11:41   things like with the the the smoke and [TS]

01:11:45   and the Scottish mist which I'll shut up [TS]

01:11:48   go on James come on it was just you know [TS]

01:11:53   for most of it i was just you know it's [TS]

01:11:56   it's a whole thing which i was [TS]

01:11:57   experiencing there was i tried to do [TS]

01:12:00   that with the music actually I was [TS]

01:12:02   trying to listen for themes and the [TS]

01:12:05   first time we heard raised theme which i [TS]

01:12:07   think is when she is sitting in her [TS]

01:12:09   little at apartment watching ships blast [TS]

01:12:11   often you know wearing her x-wing helmet [TS]

01:12:14   for fun and they play her theme i think [TS]

01:12:17   that's her thing play for the first time [TS]

01:12:18   and I specifically thought I this must [TS]

01:12:21   be her theme i will listen to it and try [TS]

01:12:23   and remember it and then listen out for [TS]

01:12:25   it when I hear it again later in the [TS]

01:12:26   movie and then of course 10 minutes [TS]

01:12:28   later she gets in the Millennium Falcon [TS]

01:12:29   from that point on [TS]

01:12:30   forget it i don't know matter thinking [TS]

01:12:32   in my brain but whatsoever because that [TS]

01:12:36   is that was the first bit we're from the [TS]

01:12:40   moment they get in the falken to the [TS]

01:12:42   moment they escaped the planet in the [TS]

01:12:44   fall can escape the TIE fighters i [TS]

01:12:46   suddenly realized that i had just been [TS]

01:12:47   grinning like a lunatic for the previous [TS]

01:12:50   ten minutes and you know from that point [TS]

01:12:53   on again I was alright i mean i'm sold [TS]

01:12:55   online i am now just enjoying and [TS]

01:12:56   watching this movie because that whole [TS]

01:12:58   sequence with the falken was just so [TS]

01:13:01   great so pitch perfect so I mean [TS]

01:13:05   perfectly and obviously it sort of [TS]

01:13:07   nostalgic all men like me but the kids [TS]

01:13:09   around me seems to be really getting [TS]

01:13:11   into it as well really excited about it [TS]

01:13:13   as well [TS]

01:13:13   yeah is a gruesome [TS]

01:13:15   amazing there obviously being a fan he [TS]

01:13:17   he does have a template for what not to [TS]

01:13:20   do which I think must have been very [TS]

01:13:21   handy because you don't often have that [TS]

01:13:23   go into making another movie but am but [TS]

01:13:26   knowing the weight of those of certain [TS]

01:13:29   particular moments and managing to get [TS]

01:13:31   them right [TS]

01:13:32   each one happening i think that the [TS]

01:13:35   return of the introduction of the [TS]

01:13:37   millennium fawlcon them finding that [TS]

01:13:39   first of all as the garbage but I didn't [TS]

01:13:41   even registered there or you have the [TS]

01:13:42   garbage and joke until did actually [TS]

01:13:46   we're heading for the full conversely [TS]

01:13:47   undead hatchery and heart and hand [TS]

01:13:52   coming on board and it was just worse [TS]

01:13:54   and i think it was perfect of all was [TS]

01:13:57   the reunion between han and Leia and [TS]

01:14:00   have the cut through it with citi field [TS]

01:14:03   thinking is added this made my also do [TS]

01:14:08   you probably don't know recognize me [TS]

01:14:11   thank you yeah perfect three PR but I [TS]

01:14:19   think maybe cracked me up more than that [TS]

01:14:22   they get a huge laugh in the city man i [TS]

01:14:24   was watching it everybody was just yet [TS]

01:14:27   because it you're right perfect 3pm and [TS]

01:14:30   yeah there was so many parts of this [TS]

01:14:31   that were kind of yes they were [TS]

01:14:33   throwbacks and little callbacks for the [TS]

01:14:35   benefit of nostalgic people like us but [TS]

01:14:37   like I say you know those moments did [TS]

01:14:39   get certainly in the cinema where I was [TS]

01:14:41   watching it did get you know laughs and [TS]

01:14:43   cheers and excitement and stuff from the [TS]

01:14:46   kids watching it is also i really i have [TS]

01:14:48   really high hopes that you know this [TS]

01:14:50   will engender a whole new generation of [TS]

01:14:53   Star Wars fans [TS]

01:14:55   well I'm gonna this presumably going to [TS]

01:14:56   be people who have seen this that this [TS]

01:14:58   is the first i was feeling they've seen [TS]

01:15:00   some true i actually went with one and I [TS]

01:15:02   i wish i had i don't like because here [TS]

01:15:05   yeah well I wish I would have talked to [TS]

01:15:07   her a little bit more afterwards against [TS]

01:15:09   my life my best friend from college his [TS]

01:15:11   wife who we've tried to watch star wars [TS]

01:15:12   with before she falls asleep every time [TS]

01:15:14   I know and so I know I know always a [TS]

01:15:17   good scene so we were little qualities [TS]

01:15:18   had to go to this one so she's never [TS]

01:15:20   seen any of them all the way through and [TS]

01:15:21   so we were trying to get an idea for [TS]

01:15:22   afterwards what you thought about that [TS]

01:15:24   and I would like to like get a chance to [TS]

01:15:25   pin her down a little more and be like [TS]

01:15:27   so what did [TS]

01:15:27   actually think but I think she was I [TS]

01:15:29   think she stayed awake so that's a good [TS]

01:15:31   sign [TS]

01:15:31   ok times up lighter up all right [TS]

01:15:36   kylo Ren what do we think of him as a [TS]

01:15:38   villain I like that he was basically a [TS]

01:15:40   stroppy teenager [TS]

01:15:41   yeah well and I I loved his tantrum with [TS]

01:15:44   the lightsaber where he said smashes [TS]

01:15:46   look like and then people just up the [TS]

01:15:48   stormtroopers backing away clearly have [TS]

01:15:51   been there before and they hope they [TS]

01:15:53   glow just to get away I have what he [TS]

01:15:57   yeah he's an immature kid I think I [TS]

01:15:59   think James totally right and i think [TS]

01:16:00   one of the fascinating things to me [TS]

01:16:02   about having thought about this for the [TS]

01:16:03   last couple days is that in some ways [TS]

01:16:06   he's the dark reflection of luke from [TS]

01:16:08   the original yes yes and we get that so [TS]

01:16:12   much through through his story up to the [TS]

01:16:14   point where he faced with his father can [TS]

01:16:17   kill him right on i was just 18 that's [TS]

01:16:20   part of the reason that why i think this [TS]

01:16:23   move manager sports well there's so many [TS]

01:16:24   bits of it that have reflections in the [TS]

01:16:28   original trilogy and that I think have [TS]

01:16:31   been disparaged in some places as being [TS]

01:16:34   it's kind of more of a remake than a new [TS]

01:16:37   movie but i think particularly for Star [TS]

01:16:39   Wars it works so well because it is all [TS]

01:16:42   about the funeral of a cycle of the [TS]

01:16:45   legend the two and flowing between the [TS]

01:16:47   dark side and the light side and for [TS]

01:16:49   this to be the next generation we're [TS]

01:16:51   getting like and and for the actual fact [TS]

01:16:54   if you are interested in what happened [TS]

01:16:55   what the previous event generations [TS]

01:16:57   adventures were like you don't catch the [TS]

01:16:59   prequels to look at if you were a fan of [TS]

01:17:01   the star wars if you're a fan of these [TS]

01:17:02   star wars want to know what lasts like [TS]

01:17:04   you've got proper movies to look at [TS]

01:17:06   which I just think is very kind [TS]

01:17:08   don't-don't-don't you know Liz that the [TS]

01:17:10   entire prequel is in fact full of [TS]

01:17:12   rapport prequels are replete with all [TS]

01:17:15   please don't actually all right is [TS]

01:17:17   everything alright alright I waiting for [TS]

01:17:19   them to like BBA rolling through the [TS]

01:17:22   back of the prefect about of my really [TS]

01:17:27   like the ren wasn't that they didn't [TS]

01:17:29   even try to make another Vader break [TS]

01:17:33   he's abusive Vader wanna be there yet [TS]

01:17:35   that's what is afraid of family yeah but [TS]

01:17:38   must have been so attempting them [TS]

01:17:40   you know basically cosplaying as deftly [TS]

01:17:42   and yeah he's kind of like a [TS]

01:17:45   personification of the writers [TS]

01:17:46   frustrations of how am I going to live [TS]

01:17:48   up to eight are right yeah yeah because [TS]

01:17:51   you can't you can't and so I think it's [TS]

01:17:53   great that they just stared away from [TS]

01:17:55   that completely because let's face it if [TS]

01:17:57   they had tried to make you know sort of [TS]

01:18:00   a dora like they'd be getting criticisms [TS]

01:18:02   probably from the same people who don't [TS]

01:18:04   like Ren that they failed to make [TS]

01:18:07   somebody as imposing lu lu will never [TS]

01:18:10   make somebody who was as iconic and [TS]

01:18:12   imposing is Veda is like so they didn't [TS]

01:18:13   even try didn't happen try and instead [TS]

01:18:16   make somebody really interesting and [TS]

01:18:19   very very well performed I thought I'd [TS]

01:18:21   never i had no idea who Adam driver even [TS]

01:18:24   was never seen girls never heard of him [TS]

01:18:26   before something the last couple of days [TS]

01:18:28   I've heard they learned he was and I [TS]

01:18:30   thought he was brilliant [TS]

01:18:32   he's greatness that I thought the best [TS]

01:18:34   analysis of kylo Ren is a character i [TS]

01:18:37   read a review that my friend Matt [TS]

01:18:39   transpo stood somewhere and he mentioned [TS]

01:18:41   how in some ways calorie is kind of the [TS]

01:18:44   embodiment of all those people that we [TS]

01:18:46   were just talking about who are so [TS]

01:18:48   annoying [TS]

01:18:48   gray like listen essentially kind of a [TS]

01:18:51   troll right like and there is almost [TS]

01:18:53   that element at the end where he tells [TS]

01:18:54   you know to tell is a thinner ray that [TS]

01:18:58   he's like that's my lightsaber basically [TS]

01:19:00   with with Luke's original lightsaber [TS]

01:19:01   it's when Finn has it yeah yeah and he's [TS]

01:19:03   like it is it that you know there's [TS]

01:19:05   almost an element of possession of that [TS]

01:19:07   like no you're not you're not really old [TS]

01:19:09   age yet I yeah you're just half a Jedi [TS]

01:19:12   boy and so I think it's great that he is [TS]

01:19:15   kind of like in some ways that is sort [TS]

01:19:18   of the manifestation of of Medicine [TS]

01:19:22   villainy in our in our society today in [TS]

01:19:25   the same way that like you know I think [TS]

01:19:27   back to when you know in Raiders of the [TS]

01:19:29   Lost Ark where were Spielberg is using [TS]

01:19:31   sort of the Nazis and how the Nazis [TS]

01:19:33   become shorthand and you know obviously [TS]

01:19:35   the Empire borrows a lot from that [TS]

01:19:36   iconography and stuff and and we don't [TS]

01:19:39   necessarily even more so [TS]

01:19:40   right right and we don't even we don't [TS]

01:19:42   necessarily have that as something [TS]

01:19:43   that's a you know the kind of threats [TS]

01:19:45   that we deal with in the win the world [TS]

01:19:47   today right there isn't like that sort [TS]

01:19:49   of you know Nazi Party German sweeping [TS]

01:19:52   Europe thing but there is [TS]

01:19:53   menace and and just sort of her from vet [TS]

01:19:57   that they're not to make this political [TS]

01:19:59   pockets but there is a menace and [TS]

01:20:01   venomous acted like the internet and [TS]

01:20:03   like just the sort of like that that [TS]

01:20:05   prepossession with like I'm right you're [TS]

01:20:08   wrong i don't know that whole egotism it [TS]

01:20:12   is whiny teenager name is like so much [TS]

01:20:15   of the menace that we face these days [TS]

01:20:16   that in some ways it makes a better [TS]

01:20:18   resonant villainy than that then that [TS]

01:20:21   retread of the original wood it's a more [TS]

01:20:24   modern feel and I saw somebody referred [TS]

01:20:25   to him as mr a safe at that [TS]

01:20:29   yeah you could do worse than that that's [TS]

01:20:31   pretty good [TS]

01:20:32   no i think i think the the fascism that [TS]

01:20:34   they were sort of riffing on here was [TS]

01:20:37   especially with calling their leader is [TS]

01:20:39   going supremely just and waited in [TS]

01:20:41   general is living speech his arms it [TS]

01:20:43   spins bit more and miscellany and guilty [TS]

01:20:46   then dead Swartz that's in there is sort [TS]

01:20:49   of poking fun etete and rush because [TS]

01:20:51   here [TS]

01:20:52   yeah because the the Italian fascists if [TS]

01:20:55   we let if you are ridiculous in many [TS]

01:20:59   many ways and between especially and if [TS]

01:21:01   you watch anything speeches it's very [TS]

01:21:03   difficult to take him seriously because [TS]

01:21:05   and they were definitely to me they felt [TS]

01:21:07   like they were urging were in that [TS]

01:21:09   direction and as an enable I charges a [TS]

01:21:12   subtle poking fun at it which is what [TS]

01:21:14   you should do because it's terrible [TS]

01:21:15   terrible thing and it should be laughed [TS]

01:21:17   at [TS]

01:21:17   but and but ya know that was interesting [TS]

01:21:19   that the thing with a color end that [TS]

01:21:22   surprised me was his parents were [TS]

01:21:25   because I went into the film absolutely [TS]

01:21:27   convinced well ray is clearly going to [TS]

01:21:29   be you know hand layers daughter and [TS]

01:21:32   kyler n might be Luke Skywalker's son or [TS]

01:21:35   something like that and i think it's [TS]

01:21:37   probably the complete opposite is true [TS]

01:21:39   and and they draw on them they drop that [TS]

01:21:42   within about you know whatever is 20 [TS]

01:21:45   minutes into the film where smoke says a [TS]

01:21:47   your you know your father or something [TS]

01:21:50   and go all right [TS]

01:21:51   yes it is she's it when Ray's escapes is [TS]

01:21:53   like a skate with the help of your [TS]

01:21:54   father [TS]

01:21:55   yeah in in the Millennium Falcon with [TS]

01:21:57   your father Han Solo is ok let's lay all [TS]

01:22:00   I can almost [TS]

01:22:01   offhandedly which was kind of odd for me [TS]

01:22:03   it wasn't like there's no column actic [TS]

01:22:05   reveal their it's just like it's just [TS]

01:22:06   like oh btdubs but i think that i think [TS]

01:22:09   you're right that's a good subversion [TS]

01:22:11   because it means we don't have the whole [TS]

01:22:12   eye on your father thing you know sort [TS]

01:22:15   of because people would have been [TS]

01:22:16   expecting that I am your son yeah other [TS]

01:22:19   way again which it does is interpreting [TS]

01:22:23   and reinterpreting the original children [TS]

01:22:25   in its own way for the new generation [TS]

01:22:26   type thing which i wish someone would [TS]

01:22:28   just go through all the points where it [TS]

01:22:30   does that I'm sure somebody thinks [TS]

01:22:32   they're the the advent fascinating what [TS]

01:22:34   they've chosen to do with with the [TS]

01:22:36   effectively that the characters in The [TS]

01:22:38   Legend this time round as soon as [TS]

01:22:40   somebody gets hold of a DVD copy i'm [TS]

01:22:42   sure that they will do exactly that [TS]

01:22:45   so I just segue raise parentage easy [TS]

01:22:51   no I don't be like all four well no I [TS]

01:22:54   eat I want to do not harden layers [TS]

01:22:56   daughter I wanted to be not be anybody's [TS]

01:22:57   daughter [TS]

01:22:58   well as you i would actually prefer that [TS]

01:23:00   as well but I think it's fairly clear [TS]

01:23:01   from all the emphasis on her about her [TS]

01:23:03   family and lineage that that's not going [TS]

01:23:04   to be the case [TS]

01:23:05   I mean if she's hands daughter I mean [TS]

01:23:07   that the phrase that popped into my head [TS]

01:23:08   was is your kids hand something's gotta [TS]

01:23:11   be done about your haha ah when [TS]

01:23:15   Christopher Lloyd shows about this movie [TS]

01:23:16   is really out there but I think I mean [TS]

01:23:20   just with the handover of the lightsaber [TS]

01:23:22   in in the last scene there seemed to be [TS]

01:23:25   you know I don't know if Luke was going [TS]

01:23:27   she looks vaguely familiar and I'm and [TS]

01:23:30   her on a planet [TS]

01:23:32   oh i thought you say I must look as much [TS]

01:23:34   like antagonists I can [TS]

01:23:36   yeah well that's right yes I do is that [TS]

01:23:38   I think there's a residence in the story [TS]

01:23:41   of her being so much like Luke in her [TS]

01:23:44   upbringing that makes it a little too [TS]

01:23:47   over-the-top if she is also Luke's [TS]

01:23:50   actual daughter because in some ways [TS]

01:23:53   it's like well I've got to turn my [TS]

01:23:54   daughter into an awesome Jed I'll do [TS]

01:23:56   exactly what was done with me recipe [TS]

01:23:58   work greats like I I should leave around [TS]

01:24:00   a desert planet and but the day and she [TS]

01:24:03   can watch her mentor get killed by an [TS]

01:24:05   evil safe exact [TS]

01:24:06   and I feel like in some ways the [TS]

01:24:08   residence and I talked a little bit [TS]

01:24:09   about this on the incomparable uh [TS]

01:24:11   previously was the whole like just a [TS]

01:24:13   Campbell sort of hero cycle right like [TS]

01:24:16   there is enough that it's a her story is [TS]

01:24:18   already an echo of Luke's mom that you [TS]

01:24:21   don't have to be belabored by have [TS]

01:24:22   making her necessarily related someone [TS]

01:24:24   else yes there are clearly questions [TS]

01:24:26   about her parentage I just mean that [TS]

01:24:30   will get resolved i'm just also not [TS]

01:24:31   clear how much it needs to be I felt [TS]

01:24:32   like it did she didn't need that extra [TS]

01:24:34   level of motivation she already seems [TS]

01:24:35   pretty related fact that they didn't [TS]

01:24:38   resolve and they left it open means that [TS]

01:24:41   there are at least thinking about it and [TS]

01:24:43   I mean the thing is that all all they're [TS]

01:24:45   not because one of the things that [TS]

01:24:46   struck me at the time was how [TS]

01:24:48   effectively in this you know in very [TS]

01:24:51   very short sort of amount of screen time [TS]

01:24:54   they established oh she was abandoned by [TS]

01:24:56   parents she's waiting for them to come [TS]

01:24:57   back they're never gonna come back [TS]

01:24:58   isn't that terrible and you know the [TS]

01:25:01   actual amount screens on that takes up [TS]

01:25:02   is a tiny tiny portion of the movie and [TS]

01:25:05   yet it's done very effectively and you [TS]

01:25:08   know is a sort of strong enough that [TS]

01:25:11   when she has that conversation with Mars [TS]

01:25:14   about anonymous says they're never [TS]

01:25:15   coming roughly you've got to look to the [TS]

01:25:17   future [TS]

01:25:18   that's a really powerful moment and so I [TS]

01:25:20   was thinking like wow they did a really [TS]

01:25:22   good job there but then of course then I [TS]

01:25:24   started thinking wait hang on a second [TS]

01:25:25   one for parents are important though [TS]

01:25:27   there was something i read that was [TS]

01:25:30   talking about some of the books i don't [TS]

01:25:32   know if it was the novelization or [TS]

01:25:33   something that suggests that the [TS]

01:25:35   scavenger boss guy might be sort of [TS]

01:25:41   keeping an eye on her for somebody and [TS]

01:25:44   the fact that he he kept the Millennium [TS]

01:25:46   Falcon and he didn't allow it to be [TS]

01:25:47   scrapped and that there was of those [TS]

01:25:50   some specific language about this so [TS]

01:25:52   people will think I'm speculating that [TS]

01:25:54   you know maybe he was the you know she [TS]

01:25:57   was entrusted in something right to hear [TS]

01:26:00   maybe if I actually feel really bad [TS]

01:26:03   about all the transmedia stuff because [TS]

01:26:05   loads of my friends in the industry are [TS]

01:26:08   like doing that stuff working on you [TS]

01:26:10   know I've got Karen Gillan's doing the [TS]

01:26:12   Vedic comics Greg rockers doing novels [TS]

01:26:14   Jason area is doing some [TS]

01:26:17   like prequel comic so I think and you [TS]

01:26:20   know I I just feel really bad because [TS]

01:26:21   the hot like i said i avoided all [TS]

01:26:23   spoilers so I did not read i have not [TS]

01:26:25   read any of that stuff and I normally [TS]

01:26:27   I'd normally try to read everything [TS]

01:26:28   written by a lot of your that no sorry [TS]

01:26:32   sorry not getting that no because I [TS]

01:26:34   didn't want anything that could even [TS]

01:26:36   risk even a hint of a spoiler [TS]

01:26:39   so you might be right about that [TS]

01:26:42   especially the trader but i have no idea [TS]

01:26:44   i would totally strangle a gun to be [TS]

01:26:46   able to work on one of the two or three [TS]

01:26:48   Gungan there was something that the [TS]

01:26:50   other thing was that the that character [TS]

01:26:52   the incar plots or however it's [TS]

01:26:54   pronounced apparently there were more [TS]

01:26:56   scenes that were shot with him and there [TS]

01:26:58   was one where to rip his arms off and [TS]

01:27:03   clearly did he beat him a hollow chest [TS]

01:27:05   and somebody must have said hmmm do we [TS]

01:27:08   want actual dismember with wiki's or do [TS]

01:27:11   we want to keep her nice pg-13 let the [TS]

01:27:14   kids and certificate yes also damaged in [TS]

01:27:17   revenge of the sith tonight so i don't [TS]

01:27:19   have to change their mind or if there [TS]

01:27:20   was more to that character that just [TS]

01:27:21   didn't end up on the screen or maybe [TS]

01:27:23   i'll end up enough to any subsequent one [TS]

01:27:25   going back tonight and he'll have a red [TS]

01:27:27   arms well that's a joke that's going to [TS]

01:27:33   keep on giving that is no and I thought [TS]

01:27:37   Finn was dead at the end because like [TS]

01:27:40   they don't do really much of anything to [TS]

01:27:44   convince you that he's not [TS]

01:27:46   I up i only noticed again at the same [TS]

01:27:49   time watching that he is breathing [TS]

01:27:52   ever-so-slightly in that final shot way [TS]

01:27:54   she kisses him on the foreign says i'll [TS]

01:27:55   also you again make sure he was a dead [TS]

01:27:58   body that they have covered him up or [TS]

01:28:00   something you don't usually all the [TS]

01:28:01   anger would have been a little lower [TS]

01:28:04   yeah there would have been a little more [TS]

01:28:05   I feel like fanfare over a yes to me I [TS]

01:28:09   thought you liked it [TS]

01:28:10   yeah it was a bit like hand frozen in [TS]

01:28:12   carbonite you know he's yeah he's out [TS]

01:28:14   for the camp and he'll be back next time [TS]

01:28:16   I won't miss any tank and SS throw [TS]

01:28:20   everything in waving right but if [TS]

01:28:22   they've shown me back to tank then [TS]

01:28:23   you're sure you know phone off his being [TS]

01:28:25   healed but there was nobody attending to [TS]

01:28:27   him then [TS]

01:28:27   no medics anyway saying get out of the [TS]

01:28:30   way we can fix and we have the [TS]

01:28:31   technology it was probably a medical [TS]

01:28:33   coma so that his body could recover from [TS]

01:28:35   its grave his winnings and snow frost [TS]

01:28:37   you might be right but would have killed [TS]

01:28:39   them to have two words you know same was [TS]

01:28:43   a little briefly ok they do say when [TS]

01:28:45   they take him off the ship at the very [TS]

01:28:47   end one of them and like Ray is talking [TS]

01:28:49   to lay I think or something they say [TS]

01:28:50   he's got a heartbeat someone in the [TS]

01:28:52   background I really know what you guys [TS]

01:28:53   had noticed that so I knew it was alive [TS]

01:28:56   alright but i was thinking like maybe [TS]

01:28:58   like his body is we've repaired his body [TS]

01:29:00   but his mind is not functioning or [TS]

01:29:02   something maybe have amnesia an [TS]

01:29:04   excellent all the other way around you [TS]

01:29:05   know [TS]

01:29:06   yeah well I i look forward to seeing i [TS]

01:29:08   really like thin as a character [TS]

01:29:10   yeah I think he's he's an intriguing [TS]

01:29:12   character because he is a he has [TS]

01:29:14   elements of like he wants to do the [TS]

01:29:16   right thing but he's also kind of a [TS]

01:29:18   coward but he does really like you know [TS]

01:29:21   I think the fact that he does do he does [TS]

01:29:24   go through and try to do the right thing [TS]

01:29:26   despite the fact that he's clearly [TS]

01:29:27   really terrified [TS]

01:29:29   it's just such a great character like it [TS]

01:29:32   was a coward he was just really unsure [TS]

01:29:34   of himself think we and what he trusted [TS]

01:29:37   run i'm in the keys so he said that was [TS]

01:29:40   his first bar fight there I mean he's [TS]

01:29:42   never seen apostle before [TS]

01:29:43   yeah it sounded like you have PTSD and [TS]

01:29:45   you just want you exactly like yeah yeah [TS]

01:29:48   yeah the only thing you express it sort [TS]

01:29:49   of is that he's like you can't beat the [TS]

01:29:51   first-order like I don't want anything [TS]

01:29:52   to do with them i want to be out of here [TS]

01:29:54   but he manages to get over that in [TS]

01:29:57   because raised in trouble he's like you [TS]

01:29:58   know I'm gonna I'm gonna go on this [TS]

01:30:00   mission and he picks up the lightsaber [TS]

01:30:02   to fight kylo Ren when you know like [TS]

01:30:04   even though he probably has an idea that [TS]

01:30:07   he's not really going to want to go so [TS]

01:30:09   help [TS]

01:30:10   yeah exactly but that like and that's [TS]

01:30:11   that's heroism right like yeah it is the [TS]

01:30:13   doing that when I don't think is a [TS]

01:30:14   calendar right it's not he's got the I [TS]

01:30:17   think maybe the the PTSD assessment is [TS]

01:30:19   closer than not exactly cowardice but [TS]

01:30:21   sort of a you know he's he's got fear [TS]

01:30:23   right like he's conquering your fear and [TS]

01:30:25   that is also a great beat because it is [TS]

01:30:28   such a bit of the even if he is not a [TS]

01:30:30   force-user that is such an element of [TS]

01:30:32   the Jedi Code that there's almost [TS]

01:30:33   something to being a Jedi without the [TS]

01:30:35   force powers right like you know it's [TS]

01:30:36   like the super it's like when you have [TS]

01:30:38   superheroes who don't have powers and [TS]

01:30:39   they're like you know I'm gonna do this [TS]

01:30:40   anyways [TS]

01:30:41   is the right thing to do you know I [TS]

01:30:42   don't necessarily stand a chance [TS]

01:30:44   I'm but I loved that he wasn't [TS]

01:30:46   immediately self-assured and yeah just [TS]

01:30:48   yeah you could see him getting to grips [TS]

01:30:50   with bits and getting overexcited he [TS]

01:30:52   when he's getting up in asthma face [TS]

01:30:54   I'm in control now but he died down i'm [TS]

01:30:57   only with the resistance but I love his [TS]

01:30:59   reaction when he realized in that when [TS]

01:31:01   he's in the back of the TIE fighter with [TS]

01:31:02   Pope and he realizes that he's going to [TS]

01:31:04   soften waiting he just thinks that he's [TS]

01:31:06   rescuing a pilot and then posed like oh [TS]

01:31:08   yeah the the droid down on the planet [TS]

01:31:10   he's got like the map to Luke Skywalker [TS]

01:31:12   because are you kidding me yeah i think [TS]

01:31:17   is amazing and there are so many good [TS]

01:31:19   jokes I really relate the that sire I [TS]

01:31:22   really just really like the scene where [TS]

01:31:24   he's basically negotiating with BBA not [TS]

01:31:27   to sell em yeah yeah I know it's [TS]

01:31:30   wonderful because he's only one talking [TS]

01:31:32   and yet we know exactly what may be [TS]

01:31:33   saying it's beautiful [TS]

01:31:34   my favorite one is is that when he is [TS]

01:31:36   like I just everyone wanna go back to [TS]

01:31:38   jakku I don't want to go back to jail [TS]

01:31:40   yeah well they really hit a gold mine in [TS]

01:31:42   terms of I think the casting on all [TS]

01:31:44   three of those major carrier yes yeah [TS]

01:31:46   we're just were just perfect and you [TS]

01:31:48   know it'sit's really i think to the [TS]

01:31:50   strengths of JJ Abrams and his team that [TS]

01:31:52   they are they are really good at casting [TS]

01:31:54   if any if you want to take one thing [TS]

01:31:55   away from this the star trek reboots [TS]

01:31:57   they are really good at casting and [TS]

01:32:00   actually a very good point yeah i think [TS]

01:32:03   that they I think they chose really well [TS]

01:32:05   with both Daisy Ridley who is a was a [TS]

01:32:07   huge find right like she is she's been [TS]

01:32:09   basically nothing before this and she [TS]

01:32:11   just sort of G totally owns that John [TS]

01:32:14   boyega is fantastic i really love him [TS]

01:32:17   Oscar Isaac who is already sort of the [TS]

01:32:18   he's the Harrison Ford that he's already [TS]

01:32:20   like never even heard of before [TS]

01:32:22   yeah I you I knew him he had been around [TS]

01:32:24   to the coen brothers movie a couple [TS]

01:32:25   years ago he had his star was definitely [TS]

01:32:27   on the way out myself x macking out with [TS]

01:32:30   right hands in the Andes in the next [TS]

01:32:32   x-men movie too with a Domhnall Gleeson [TS]

01:32:34   who gives you a general Hux and so I [TS]

01:32:37   feel like he's the he's the Harrison [TS]

01:32:38   Ford of this trilogy where it's like [TS]

01:32:40   he's the most well-known the most [TS]

01:32:41   well-established maybe not a huge star [TS]

01:32:42   yet but like clearly on the way up [TS]

01:32:44   whereas the other two are much less [TS]

01:32:46   known the John Vega does have a couple [TS]

01:32:49   features under his belt but they're just [TS]

01:32:51   all three of them have tremendous [TS]

01:32:52   chemistry [TS]

01:32:53   they're all charming [TS]

01:32:54   they're all charismatic they all do [TS]

01:32:57   great jobs with their various characters [TS]

01:32:59   and I just I'm so excited like I feel [TS]

01:33:01   that's if nothing else [TS]

01:33:03   Star Wars rest so heavily on its [TS]

01:33:04   characters that I feel like the idea of [TS]

01:33:06   what you took out like a like if you had [TS]

01:33:08   action figures these guys and you were [TS]

01:33:09   like you're a kid you're playing with [TS]

01:33:11   action figures they all have such [TS]

01:33:12   defined pair of personalities in a way [TS]

01:33:14   that so many action movies I feel like [TS]

01:33:16   well I'm just you know I'm archetype [TS]

01:33:18   template number one I marketer and [TS]

01:33:19   promoter can just go sighs yeah let's go [TS]

01:33:22   on an adventure and it's like in this [TS]

01:33:23   case know these guys have defined [TS]

01:33:25   personalities into find traits that like [TS]

01:33:26   if you were like sit down and like [TS]

01:33:28   making up stories about them [TS]

01:33:30   yeah in some ways it does start to write [TS]

01:33:32   itself because they have these [TS]

01:33:33   characters already you know defined for [TS]

01:33:35   them so I just I just that was the [TS]

01:33:39   biggest probably the prequels for known [TS]

01:33:40   for the lack of characters i don't like [TS]

01:33:43   a parent there's no one is a character [TS]

01:33:44   in those movies and so that is so [TS]

01:33:46   girlfriend lots of characters gotta put [TS]

01:33:48   not a single personality between them [TS]

01:33:50   and ya know it it's terrifying but can [TS]

01:33:55   play in just occurred to me they're all [TS]

01:33:57   going to be trying to do the kylo Ren [TS]

01:33:58   voice you know like we all did that [TS]

01:34:01   moron and 144 Vader in the playground [TS]

01:34:05   they're all going to be trying to kylo [TS]

01:34:06   Ren how do unless you've got a [TS]

01:34:07   distortion pedal to hand how are you [TS]

01:34:09   going to do that because it's massively [TS]

01:34:11   over driven and a single total [TS]

01:34:13   distortion I thought it was very easy to [TS]

01:34:16   understand as well like other like Bane [TS]

01:34:18   from Batman yeah but it was it was a [TS]

01:34:21   similar kind of effect but it was just [TS]

01:34:23   done so much better wear but it is kind [TS]

01:34:26   of if you go back and listen to like [TS]

01:34:28   early nineties industrial music an [TS]

01:34:29   administrator knowledge now stuff that's [TS]

01:34:31   what that is [TS]

01:34:32   thats singing through a distortion pedal [TS]

01:34:34   and this was clearly a filtered through [TS]

01:34:37   the same kind of distortion and [TS]

01:34:39   overdrive effects that you get with [TS]

01:34:40   those pedals so how kids are going to [TS]

01:34:43   try and emulate that I don't even want [TS]

01:34:44   to get in trouble [TS]

01:34:46   that's probably an iphone app for [TS]

01:34:47   already hahaha other probably the star [TS]

01:34:51   wars and I Apple have that eventually [TS]

01:34:53   since they've got everything else in [TS]

01:34:54   there [TS]

01:34:55   yeah but I wasn't i went into this and I [TS]

01:34:57   was really worried that wasn't going to [TS]

01:34:58   like the new characters and I yeah it's [TS]

01:35:01   down to the casting of the reasons i [TS]

01:35:03   should have been more trusting because [TS]

01:35:05   whatever other problems I have with the [TS]

01:35:06   with the star trek maybe [TS]

01:35:08   the one thing I'm was can argue with is [TS]

01:35:10   that I'm really impressed by all [TS]

01:35:11   accounts even the ones i don't quite [TS]

01:35:12   like they're still decent enough and [TS]

01:35:14   that's amazing considering there's like [TS]

01:35:16   eight or nine of them but they have to [TS]

01:35:18   recap so yeah absolutely we haven't [TS]

01:35:21   mentioned Leah it's all very much [TS]

01:35:24   right no that was glad I was pretty [TS]

01:35:26   excited when I heard of this was the guy [TS]

01:35:29   I picked up a handful of very very minor [TS]

01:35:30   spoilers before we went in and one of [TS]

01:35:32   the things was then used that she was [TS]

01:35:33   going to be generally because i watch [TS]

01:35:35   that interview with her or that was with [TS]

01:35:37   the doggie and on that American with a [TS]

01:35:39   thing [TS]

01:35:39   the amazing interview yeah and I was [TS]

01:35:42   just so exciting that she gets to be a [TS]

01:35:46   general and do the way to find her [TS]

01:35:49   character there with the relationship [TS]

01:35:50   between hardhat and we instantly knew [TS]

01:35:53   exactly what happened to it [TS]

01:35:54   despite it being 35 years and picture of [TS]

01:35:57   it was built up just like the picture of [TS]

01:36:00   me in her past so quickly in just a few [TS]

01:36:03   lines and yet it feels that all in and [TS]

01:36:05   you can use a intentionally feeling with [TS]

01:36:07   novels or something at some point but I [TS]

01:36:09   leaving its imaginations they do it very [TS]

01:36:12   well and having her returning simply [TS]

01:36:15   return to what she does best and this is [TS]

01:36:17   what she find satisfaction in her life [TS]

01:36:19   calling is resistance lighting project [TS]

01:36:22   oh that's brilliant gorilla [TS]

01:36:25   yeah it was kind of great because i was [TS]

01:36:27   thinking about that today actually and [TS]

01:36:28   thinking how in all the Expanded [TS]

01:36:30   Universe stuff that came before she's [TS]

01:36:32   always positioned as much more of a [TS]

01:36:35   diplomat a politician you know a leader [TS]

01:36:38   but someone who is much more on the [TS]

01:36:39   civilian side of things and it's so it's [TS]

01:36:43   such a it's such a left turn from that [TS]

01:36:45   and yet such a delightful welcome left [TS]

01:36:47   turn and one that makes perfect sense [TS]

01:36:49   given you know throwing all that out and [TS]

01:36:52   going from what we have is canon I mean [TS]

01:36:54   if you look at her roles in again having [TS]

01:36:56   just watching the Jedi look at a role in [TS]

01:36:58   that you know clearly this makes a lot [TS]

01:37:00   of sense this is of course where her [TS]

01:37:01   career would go right like she hasn't [TS]

01:37:03   admitted she's developed a military [TS]

01:37:05   background she spent all that time as a [TS]

01:37:07   resistance fighter in the thick of [TS]

01:37:09   things and she is clearly like a [TS]

01:37:11   strategist and even as as she's gotten [TS]

01:37:13   older she's probably gotten even more [TS]

01:37:14   experience with that and so it is such a [TS]

01:37:17   great such a great decision that [TS]

01:37:21   I found like you just not where i was [TS]

01:37:24   expecting things to go and yet something [TS]

01:37:26   that made perfect sense to me that i [TS]

01:37:28   just i really i really love that I think [TS]

01:37:30   it's a great move [TS]

01:37:32   yeah I know you're almost you might have [TS]

01:37:34   been expecting her to be back leading [TS]

01:37:36   the Senate or something you know back in [TS]

01:37:37   the surrounding white robes and yeah [TS]

01:37:39   becoming a senior diplomat or leader of [TS]

01:37:42   the New Republic people were saying like [TS]

01:37:44   oh she's now she's mom mom like she's [TS]

01:37:46   not mon mothma she's like the gym she's [TS]

01:37:48   like the general from New Hope she's [TS]

01:37:49   like general Dodonna from the new hope [TS]

01:37:51   you like she's in charge of this whole [TS]

01:37:52   thing she's not just like sort of the [TS]

01:37:54   political figure head to give them [TS]

01:37:56   legitimacy she is actually on the ground [TS]

01:37:59   doing you know doing stuff [TS]

01:38:00   well that's good because we didn't [TS]

01:38:02   really need lots of political scenes [TS]

01:38:04   know quite enough of the words i do have [TS]

01:38:07   1i already established this but i do I [TS]

01:38:10   am frustrated with the treatment of the [TS]

01:38:12   republic vs the resistance in this yet [TS]

01:38:15   i'm here at all it's not done well and [TS]

01:38:17   it's it's frustrating because I thought [TS]

01:38:19   as I saw someone remarking today online [TS]

01:38:21   one of the frustrations is we've spent [TS]

01:38:23   all this time striving for the ideals of [TS]

01:38:25   the Republican the original trilogy and [TS]

01:38:27   now we get it back and it's inherently [TS]

01:38:28   dispatched in about you know half an [TS]

01:38:30   hour please I completely ineffective [TS]

01:38:31   yeah right and so it's chorus because [TS]

01:38:34   they blow up something they did not say [TS]

01:38:36   the horse something in the hosnian [TS]

01:38:38   system which I believe course and is not [TS]

01:38:40   again I'm not massively knowledgeable [TS]

01:38:43   about that sort of stuff but from what i [TS]

01:38:44   know it isn't in and you know maybe it [TS]

01:38:46   is but just because i am so interested [TS]

01:38:48   to know what has happened in these [TS]

01:38:50   intervening years [TS]

01:38:51   how did the Empire the fragment of the [TS]

01:38:53   Empire you know get dispatched to maybe [TS]

01:38:56   that's what the anthology movies will [TS]

01:38:58   cover i will be interested to see if [TS]

01:39:00   they go back and backfill some of us [TS]

01:39:02   because there's very little about it and [TS]

01:39:03   you're basically saying you want prequel [TS]

01:39:05   you're right about four different from [TS]

01:39:08   here a lot of people to the sequel's is [TS]

01:39:10   what I want [TS]

01:39:11   is there a word for that yeah and and [TS]

01:39:13   there is I i really like you know sci-fi [TS]

01:39:16   politics intriguing begins like stuff [TS]

01:39:19   like a watching the expanse now read all [TS]

01:39:20   the books on that and I think there is a [TS]

01:39:22   there is a cool interesting Star Wars [TS]

01:39:24   story to be told that and stuff that I [TS]

01:39:25   think was done well in some of the [TS]

01:39:27   Expanded Universe stuff before but [TS]

01:39:29   nothing too cool story doesn't need to [TS]

01:39:31   be done here you know it doesn't fit in [TS]

01:39:33   a two-hour movie necessarily but it does [TS]

01:39:35   feel kind of it was the one thing that I [TS]

01:39:37   felt sloppy because it didn't really [TS]

01:39:39   make sense why is the Republic backing [TS]

01:39:41   and gorillas arm [TS]

01:39:42   why do things they have control yes but [TS]

01:39:45   you're secretly that everybody knows and [TS]

01:39:47   so we're gonna blow up the Republic [TS]

01:39:48   anyway is we can have like a 20-pot [TS]

01:39:51   house of cards styles that extols the [TS]

01:39:54   political wouldn't put it past them and [TS]

01:39:57   raise me up i'm on board smoke the [TS]

01:40:01   supreme leader speaking of the first [TS]

01:40:02   order to the public at large let's get [TS]

01:40:04   today over so that they're all been snow [TS]

01:40:07   our mutual friend my sister Lian has a [TS]

01:40:11   theory that he might be a not dead [TS]

01:40:14   Darth Plagueis I I don't think it's [TS]

01:40:16   unrealistic plague plague it places the [TS]

01:40:19   one who he was [TS]

01:40:21   Papa teens mentor is the relation [TS]

01:40:25   between tells Anakin Skywalker the story [TS]

01:40:27   of Darth Plagueis because he conquered [TS]

01:40:29   death he was so powerful in the force [TS]

01:40:31   that he learned how to conquer death [TS]

01:40:32   before his apprentice ye killing I had [TS]

01:40:36   to kill one of those mean old republic [TS]

01:40:37   that you do is choose them but i think [TS]

01:40:42   that's I mean who knows whether that's [TS]

01:40:44   actually you know correct but I think [TS]

01:40:45   that's an interesting theory that would [TS]

01:40:47   be a way of units directly connecting it [TS]

01:40:50   back to the prequels but not in a way [TS]

01:40:52   that kind of things like you circle [TS]

01:40:56   around the prequels and bring them all [TS]

01:40:57   together off your actually touching [TS]

01:40:59   right he's never seen in the prequels [TS]

01:41:01   just talked about that was the thing i [TS]

01:41:03   dislike most about the prequels was that [TS]

01:41:05   everything happened to be connected to [TS]

01:41:07   everything else yeah and you know it [TS]

01:41:09   doesn't I don't feel it has to be you [TS]

01:41:11   know a character we've seen before [TS]

01:41:13   no but if he's not then suddenly we [TS]

01:41:15   heard mega-powerful safety just came out [TS]

01:41:17   of nowhere in the last 30 years you know [TS]

01:41:19   and looks a thousand years old if here [TS]

01:41:22   sit though I mean that the other [TS]

01:41:23   question I'll [TS]

01:41:24   only height yeah i mean he might be but [TS]

01:41:25   like there are ya i did like [TS]

01:41:27   particularly masses line where she talks [TS]

01:41:28   about how evil keeps arriving and always [TS]

01:41:30   has a different name thus if the Empire [TS]

01:41:32   of the first order etc so you know again [TS]

01:41:35   sort of corresponding to that same [TS]

01:41:37   theory about nope doesn't actually use [TS]

01:41:39   the word say that any point that thing [TS]

01:41:40   know right exactly and even in the [TS]

01:41:43   original trilogy city is is you know [TS]

01:41:45   will define right we know Darth Vader is [TS]

01:41:47   a Dark Lord of the Sith but nothing is [TS]

01:41:48   made no mention is made of the Emperor [TS]

01:41:51   being a Sith Lord the old republic it's [TS]

01:41:54   much better defined it got a little [TS]

01:41:56   quick sentries you can call it old if [TS]

01:41:59   not older they're everywhere [TS]

01:42:02   I hate everybody being called Darth too [TS]

01:42:04   if only because it reminds me of that [TS]

01:42:05   one line in New Hope where where obi-wan [TS]

01:42:08   Kenobi calls fader Dark Daughters like [TS]

01:42:10   gonna make it [TS]

01:42:12   you can't win Lorde yeah it's not super [TS]

01:42:15   yeah that's so bizarre I mean that the [TS]

01:42:17   the smoke could be something like some [TS]

01:42:20   other teenage kid with some protection [TS]

01:42:22   yeah it's true that would be your [TS]

01:42:25   bedroom with this is not really the [TS]

01:42:26   image that you project if you could just [TS]

01:42:30   ride on a different one everyone here is [TS]

01:42:32   sort of aging column with bits missing [TS]

01:42:34   from his face and it was very strange [TS]

01:42:36   yeah I know what's going on there um I [TS]

01:42:39   don't drive as floppy hair love it [TS]

01:42:42   I thought I loved it as well have some [TS]

01:42:43   people complaining about that as well so [TS]

01:42:45   that your hair therapy is here was too [TS]

01:42:47   sloppy but it makes him look we're too [TS]

01:42:48   long and it makes me look like an emo [TS]

01:42:50   kid and all that but one of the things I [TS]

01:42:52   liked about it was because it frames his [TS]

01:42:53   face perfectly so even when he takes off [TS]

01:42:56   the helmet he still looks like he's [TS]

01:42:59   wearing a helmet or me [TS]

01:43:01   looks like he's always wearing a hood [TS]

01:43:03   you know because he faces just in the [TS]

01:43:05   middle of this sea of black I have no [TS]

01:43:08   objections to his here it looks fine but [TS]

01:43:10   it was it was nice here and i did i did [TS]

01:43:14   like i did like the be taking off the [TS]

01:43:16   helmet and it's just you know it's a [TS]

01:43:18   just more looking your head under there [TS]

01:43:20   yeah and it's not you know that that was [TS]

01:43:23   nice i did get a nice car right but he [TS]

01:43:26   didn't have it to start with yeah he [TS]

01:43:28   totally would be all he must be so happy [TS]

01:43:31   about that [TS]

01:43:31   you know I your mother look what I got [TS]

01:43:35   today is probably going in going like [TS]

01:43:38   I've been injured quick give me a [TS]

01:43:39   cybernetic shoulders it's just a scratch [TS]

01:43:41   known replace if you take my hand off so [TS]

01:43:44   I can get a new hand will cut his own [TS]

01:43:47   yeah you don't understand do it cut his [TS]

01:43:51   hand off and say it came off in the [TS]

01:43:52   bathroom method is a method so although [TS]

01:43:56   it looks showed I think looks robotic [TS]

01:43:59   and great at the end there that was yeah [TS]

01:44:02   yeah but they're that was that was a [TS]

01:44:04   nice decision at the flashback are no [TS]

01:44:07   there's a point right okay so raise sort [TS]

01:44:10   of you know force vision when she [TS]

01:44:12   touches the lightsaber we get her in a [TS]

01:44:16   starship that's collapsing you know what [TS]

01:44:18   could be anything obviate mean it looks [TS]

01:44:20   sort of you know first-order Imperial [TS]

01:44:22   issue but it could be anything [TS]

01:44:23   and then she sees Luke presumably giving [TS]

01:44:28   the plans to r2 and telling our to you [TS]

01:44:31   know go and sleep until the right time [TS]

01:44:33   or whatever you know with his robotic [TS]

01:44:35   hand on him and then you get the Knights [TS]

01:44:38   of Ren thing and its really that's the [TS]

01:44:41   one part where you like is this a vision [TS]

01:44:44   of the future or is it a flashback [TS]

01:44:46   because it's really hard to tell which [TS]

01:44:49   that is you know I assumed with the [TS]

01:44:51   Knights of Ren that that was basically [TS]

01:44:53   his classmates from well that's when I [TS]

01:44:55   thought I academy but I've seen people [TS]

01:44:57   since saying no the the it's a it's a [TS]

01:44:59   vision of the future like and she will [TS]

01:45:01   you know of her fighting the Knights of [TS]

01:45:02   running the future may still be as [TS]

01:45:04   classmates [TS]

01:45:06   well yeah yeah so yeah actually yeah you [TS]

01:45:09   know is there a consensus on this [TS]

01:45:10   because I'm really confused that I I [TS]

01:45:12   don't know enough about what people have [TS]

01:45:14   been saying about it but I've definitely [TS]

01:45:15   i also thought it was maybe his fellow [TS]

01:45:18   classmates being trained by Luke [TS]

01:45:20   although at that point you wonder a how [TS]

01:45:22   many trainees were there and be how many [TS]

01:45:25   of them went dad right ROM and so and [TS]

01:45:29   here is saying stop wearing the mask is [TS]

01:45:32   out and I'm well and that whole set that [TS]

01:45:36   scene does start with rain killing [TS]

01:45:38   somebody with his [TS]

01:45:40   you know cross lightsaber but it's [TS]

01:45:42   impossible to tell who it is [TS]

01:45:44   yeah have all the scenes that I want to [TS]

01:45:46   see a second time the the flashback is [TS]

01:45:48   the biggest one because it's so unclear [TS]

01:45:50   right and i did and i was wrong really [TS]

01:45:52   watching you know didn't blink watching [TS]

01:45:54   really carefully and it's just way too [TS]

01:45:55   fast to actually tell who he kills on [TS]

01:45:57   what's going on there was something in [TS]

01:45:59   the press today that was talking about [TS]

01:46:00   how you and mcgregor had recorded you [TS]

01:46:02   know log for that scene overlaid I think [TS]

01:46:05   with Alec Guinness oh yeah it's all that [TS]

01:46:07   yeah they use Alec Guinness is they use [TS]

01:46:09   him saying afraid to say ray they make [TS]

01:46:12   that syllable out of it and then they [TS]

01:46:14   over way with that with you and mcgregor [TS]

01:46:16   a saying something about you taking your [TS]

01:46:18   first steps or something like that so I [TS]

01:46:20   mean technically you could still yeah [TS]

01:46:21   you even greater still allowing around [TS]

01:46:23   what if you brought him back as a force [TS]

01:46:25   right well that was my question is where [TS]

01:46:28   all the force ghost because why does [TS]

01:46:30   nobody show up and say you know or by a [TS]

01:46:33   then she was a party [TS]

01:46:35   yeah that's right that you just get a [TS]

01:46:38   bunch of he walks back to endure [TS]

01:46:39   everybody that right so okay let's start [TS]

01:46:43   to wrap this up the one thing about this [TS]

01:46:45   movie that felt a little bit flat to me [TS]

01:46:47   I perhaps ironically was the attack by [TS]

01:46:50   the x-wings on Starkiller base [TS]

01:46:52   I loved all the x-wing sequences loved [TS]

01:46:55   all the starship sequences and even that [TS]

01:46:57   was the sequences themselves [TS]

01:46:58   individually were great including the [TS]

01:47:00   don't call it a trench run but but the [TS]

01:47:04   actual destruction of the base at the [TS]

01:47:06   end fell really flat for me and I think [TS]

01:47:08   a lot of that was actually down to the [TS]

01:47:09   score which didn't sort of feel [TS]

01:47:12   triumphant and the editing because you [TS]

01:47:15   have the attack on the base and okay [TS]

01:47:18   it's starting to go badly you know we [TS]

01:47:20   need to make lots and lots of bowling [TS]

01:47:21   passes and we're getting shot to pieces [TS]

01:47:22   when they cut away to everything else [TS]

01:47:25   that's going on for so long that by the [TS]

01:47:29   time we return to it you kind of you [TS]

01:47:31   know not forgotten about it but it's [TS]

01:47:33   just and then it's over really quickly [TS]

01:47:34   and it's just it's the one part of it [TS]

01:47:37   that I felt was a bit kind of cursory [TS]

01:47:40   yeah it doesn't have that moment like in [TS]

01:47:42   Star Wars where you've got look making [TS]

01:47:45   the run and and then at hands the [TS]

01:47:47   Millennium Falcon flies and last moment [TS]

01:47:49   and that's the woman with the audience [TS]

01:47:51   you're like hell [TS]

01:47:52   yah-yah-yah and we all feel really good [TS]

01:47:54   and excited and happy and go home [TS]

01:47:56   delighted I mean like the rest but [TS]

01:47:58   that's the really moment but it gives [TS]

01:48:00   you the emotional punch and I felt there [TS]

01:48:02   was a sort of as a like a miniature one [TS]

01:48:05   with the x-wing turning up our or the [TS]

01:48:10   other place on must guard this place [TS]

01:48:12   that's the thing [TS]

01:48:13   yes that one I'm very good at Star Wars [TS]

01:48:15   names but the real thing here when the [TS]

01:48:17   x-wings playing you're thinking yeah and [TS]

01:48:19   I think excellent that was really good [TS]

01:48:21   those are also have I wonder what the [TS]

01:48:22   finale is going to be because that one [TS]

01:48:24   felt pretty great and yeah I was kind of [TS]

01:48:27   waiting for that hell yeah brilliant [TS]

01:48:28   let's shipping and no go home moment but [TS]

01:48:31   it never quite came and so of course [TS]

01:48:34   this is terrible the virus like but and [TS]

01:48:37   this would be so because of that didn't [TS]

01:48:40   happen there was quite a lot through [TS]

01:48:42   hand Solars day through when it was [TS]

01:48:44   clear what was going to happen through [TS]

01:48:46   the whole getting stabbed by the [TS]

01:48:48   lightsaber thing and then the whole [TS]

01:48:50   falling off the bridge and a bit i have [TS]

01:48:52   a kid thinking he could come back from [TS]

01:48:55   that [TS]

01:48:55   do we need to bring the advice of that [TS]

01:48:59   ok missed all the vital wins and then [TS]

01:49:02   there was an heir to the pot and sure [TS]

01:49:03   and then they put Michelle got made [TS]

01:49:05   before the thing blew up a lot of value [TS]

01:49:09   in the day of a major beloved character [TS]

01:49:12   is like the whole falling bridge thing [TS]

01:49:15   yeah yeah i think we buy this hide [TS]

01:49:19   accepted you probably were actually [TS]

01:49:23   going to break the back then everything [TS]

01:49:24   exploded and I was like oh ok and it is [TS]

01:49:28   a sort of clicked back a little bit with [TS]

01:49:30   with Ray's ascend to the end but it yeah [TS]

01:49:34   I do feel its measured missing that [TS]

01:49:35   fights well I don't think it's sort of [TS]

01:49:37   detracted from the overall feeling of [TS]

01:49:40   anticlimax and yet you know the end was [TS]

01:49:42   very very powerful it was just like one [TS]

01:49:44   is like someone forgot to put the final [TS]

01:49:48   chocolate button at the top of the [TS]

01:49:51   chocolate button cake the cake is [TS]

01:49:53   delicious but it looks really really [TS]

01:49:55   good we lost the key but you're just [TS]

01:49:57   like is there something missing there [TS]

01:49:58   just that [TS]

01:49:59   yeah but why why was thinking was you [TS]

01:50:02   know so population of original deaths [TS]

01:50:04   that was I [TS]

01:50:05   it's about 300,000 people and this thing [TS]

01:50:07   was you know a planet a hundred times [TS]

01:50:10   the size or somebody is like so let's [TS]

01:50:13   say you know you got a hundred million [TS]

01:50:16   or something on that [TS]

01:50:17   how do you get people to apply for those [TS]

01:50:19   kind of jobs [TS]

01:50:20   given what happened to the previous two [TS]

01:50:22   dead stars time to highlight you let him [TS]

01:50:25   know what happened either like Luke [TS]

01:50:26   Skywalker disappeared and saloon just [TS]

01:50:28   look at my eyes roll well you know it's [TS]

01:50:30   not good i met how many deathstars can [TS]

01:50:33   actually bonus ok it's to support but [TS]

01:50:35   this is this is [TS]

01:50:37   yeah how apologize but there's a single [TS]

01:50:39   rhymed battle station in the rest of all [TS]

01:50:43   the best films it's just as unlikely [TS]

01:50:45   after three people are gonna start to [TS]

01:50:48   think at times are hard and taxes are [TS]

01:50:50   high you know somewhere there is a good [TS]

01:50:52   there's a good article might have been [TS]

01:50:53   on slate which is the sum someone wrote [TS]

01:50:55   the memos between general Hux and the [TS]

01:50:57   designer of Starkiller base like it's [TS]

01:51:00   coming over like the mine usually also [TS]

01:51:02   could you really just like I feel like [TS]

01:51:04   that that's a very accessible easy place [TS]

01:51:07   to shoot things could be going to cover [TS]

01:51:08   that up or something in an expert our [TS]

01:51:10   you run over cost this is getting out of [TS]

01:51:12   control it's it's a very funny article i [TS]

01:51:14   would like to know how you managed to [TS]

01:51:16   get the money for it though after it [TS]

01:51:19   gives is it is exponentially bigger then [TS]

01:51:22   the North it is removably it was a [TS]

01:51:24   planet [TS]

01:51:25   alright i'm bringing and then they just [TS]

01:51:26   carved some bits out of it yeah but you [TS]

01:51:29   can still get still fairly expensive [TS]

01:51:31   that's a lot of Earth work well they've [TS]

01:51:33   got like the little diggers with [TS]

01:51:34   lightsabers on them and its really know [TS]

01:51:39   about our honor to end on a positive [TS]

01:51:42   note i will say people actually [TS]

01:51:45   applauded at the end in the cinema where [TS]

01:51:49   I was watching it now we're now in [TS]

01:51:50   America that's not so uncommon in the UK [TS]

01:51:52   that never happens is the first time [TS]

01:51:56   I've ever been in a British cinema and [TS]

01:51:59   people just spontaneously burst into [TS]

01:52:01   applause at the end when they're you [TS]

01:52:03   know that it added music came up at the [TS]

01:52:05   end [TS]

01:52:06   yeah i think there was there was there [TS]

01:52:08   was certainly a smattering of light [TS]

01:52:09   applause it wasn't i have been in [TS]

01:52:11   American cinemas with that with the [TS]

01:52:13   whole whooping butt [TS]

01:52:16   it was it you know that do remember it [TS]

01:52:20   was British applause but it was always [TS]

01:52:21   nevertheless yes that we we had no [TS]

01:52:23   applause [TS]

01:52:24   although when the one time I happens in [TS]

01:52:26   American so another was any closer [TS]

01:52:28   either but it was because it doesn't [TS]

01:52:30   have whatever it's so well so which yeah [TS]

01:52:32   that was not a movie did it doesn't [TS]

01:52:34   matter answers one question man [TS]

01:52:39   alright alright we've been going for [TS]
