00:02:12   oh I have some bad news for you wow that [TS]

00:02:16   leads to an enlarged heart and it's a [TS]

00:02:18   fatal convention that i recommend a [TS]

00:02:21   standing desk [TS]

00:02:22   yeah that's how the grinch did it so [TS]

00:02:26   where we're going to talk about three [TS]

00:02:27   classic TV specials that were released i [TS]

00:02:31   did not even realize this when we pick [TS]

00:02:32   them in successive years success of [TS]

00:02:34   Christmases interesting isn't it isn't [TS]

00:02:36   it's it's a so few classic christmas [TS]

00:02:40   specials and they all kind of came in a [TS]

00:02:42   clump in the middle 60 like another done [TS]

00:02:44   what was it in the water that caused [TS]

00:02:47   this i don't know but 1964 'he's Rudolph [TS]

00:02:50   the red-nosed reindeer a rankin/bass [TS]

00:02:52   production in claymation there is a [TS]

00:02:55   Charlie Brown Christmas which is [TS]

00:02:56   celebrating its 50th anniversary this [TS]

00:03:00   Christmas from nineteen sixty-five and [TS]

00:03:02   1966 is how the grinch stole christmas [TS]

00:03:06   with an exclamation point [TS]

00:03:07   those are the the [TS]

00:03:09   three specials that we're going to be [TS]

00:03:11   talking about all classics [TS]

00:03:13   you know you could you could say there's [TS]

00:03:14   sort of an inflection point where the [TS]

00:03:17   way Christmas is celebrated and marketed [TS]

00:03:20   really shifted in the early sixties [TS]

00:03:22   after television really hit and all of [TS]

00:03:25   these kind of have that same theme of [TS]

00:03:27   it's not it's not the toys it's not the [TS]

00:03:30   marketing its here's what Christmas is [TS]

00:03:32   all about right what is what is the true [TS]

00:03:34   yes in fact the plots of at least two of [TS]

00:03:36   these specials are really similar as was [TS]

00:03:39   pointed out to me earlier [TS]

00:03:41   really yeah and you know an overarching [TS]

00:03:44   it turns out well we'll get to it also [TS]

00:03:46   I'm always amused by how how much in [TS]

00:03:48   jeopardy Christmas is Christmas is a is [TS]

00:03:51   a is a holiday that is right on the edge [TS]

00:03:53   of being ruined at all times [TS]

00:03:56   there's always been a war on Christmas [TS]

00:03:58   yea verily it is it's true you could it [TS]

00:04:01   could it could fall apart any minute [TS]

00:04:03   except in Whoville but we'll get there [TS]

00:04:06   because we're going to start with [TS]

00:04:06   Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer we're [TS]

00:04:08   gonna go chronologically 1964 this this [TS]

00:04:11   stop-motion animation rankin/bass they [TS]

00:04:13   did a whole lot of specials but this was [TS]

00:04:15   the one that that is I think the most [TS]

00:04:16   famous in that and then made their made [TS]

00:04:19   their careers actually Jules bass and [TS]

00:04:21   artists such as they were so well you [TS]

00:04:23   know your year without the Santa Claus [TS]

00:04:25   your your frosty the snowman your [TS]

00:04:27   hospitals is coming to town yeah there [TS]

00:04:29   they did a bunch mad monster party this [TS]

00:04:32   one so this one of course chronicles the [TS]

00:04:35   story of of Rudolph the red-nosed [TS]

00:04:37   reindeer as taken from the popular song [TS]

00:04:39   you may not realize the from the book [TS]

00:04:41   written by his brother-in-law and you [TS]

00:04:43   have been 37 huh yeah it's a real threat [TS]

00:04:47   was reading your article not a classic [TS]

00:04:48   song a relatively at the time relatively [TS]

00:04:53   recent kind of holiday novelty song and [TS]

00:04:56   turned within like 25 years yeah yeah [TS]

00:04:58   and turned into this story of what would [TS]

00:05:00   really have been like to flesh out the [TS]

00:05:03   story of that of the origin of the [TS]

00:05:05   red-nosed reindeer and how he came to [TS]

00:05:08   guide Santa's sleigh that night and the [TS]

00:05:10   answer is that the North Pole is a [TS]

00:05:12   terrible place full of all judgmental [TS]

00:05:15   people who will brook no difference and [TS]

00:05:17   everybody must be exactly the same to [TS]

00:05:19   the point where his father Donner up [TS]

00:05:23   on Rudolph being born and showing his [TS]

00:05:25   glowing nose says well he's never gonna [TS]

00:05:28   amount to anything now but he knows [TS]

00:05:30   that's true because he's dealt with all [TS]

00:05:32   the a-holes at the North its energy is [TS]

00:05:36   like it's all the creatures my god i [TS]

00:05:38   mean the elves are judgmental the your [TS]

00:05:40   judgment my sanity is awful [TS]

00:05:43   he knows exactly what Santa is going to [TS]

00:05:45   say about it when he discovers it which [TS]

00:05:46   is daughter you should be ashamed of [TS]

00:05:48   yourself which is exactly what Santa [TS]

00:05:50   said yeah you gotta worry about the big [TS]

00:05:52   hole that's full of all the other [TS]

00:05:54   reindeer with like green noses yellow [TS]

00:05:56   noses infra red noses they load your [TS]

00:05:58   ghost of they're all gone and not [TS]

00:06:01   humanely [TS]

00:06:02   yeah that's where reindeer meat comes [TS]

00:06:04   from oh the guy i actually got an x-men [TS]

00:06:08   vibe i tweeted about this i said earlier [TS]

00:06:11   right rootin tootin and he's hated it [TS]

00:06:14   for his mutant power and this isn't know [TS]

00:06:16   where there are flying reindeer that's [TS]

00:06:18   fine that's fine but you better not be a [TS]

00:06:20   mutant with a glowing nose because then [TS]

00:06:23   there is no place for you in this it [TS]

00:06:25   just struck me that any obviously the [TS]

00:06:27   message of this is one about like you [TS]

00:06:29   can you know you we want to enjoy the [TS]

00:06:32   fact that people are different and p [TS]

00:06:34   it's okay to be different that is the [TS]

00:06:36   message it's a very almost free to be [TS]

00:06:37   you and me kind of message but while [TS]

00:06:39   sending it also since the message that [TS]

00:06:42   the North Pole is horrible i forgot [TS]

00:06:45   watching this this time I forgotten how [TS]

00:06:47   annoying the noise was too [TS]

00:06:49   it's one thing that is nose closed but [TS]

00:06:51   it also makes an incredibly noising [TS]

00:06:53   annoying piercing noise [TS]

00:06:56   yeah it has to suspect that might be [TS]

00:06:58   part of that yeah it's true yeah because [TS]

00:07:00   mom and I can't be selfie with with that [TS]

00:07:03   noise that's right but they never bring [TS]

00:07:05   that up do they [TS]

00:07:06   the other very annoying those very noisy [TS]

00:07:09   I like that Sam the Snowman actually [TS]

00:07:11   points out how awful all of the going on [TS]

00:07:14   at the North Pole is when you that he [TS]

00:07:15   pointedly early on calls Rudolph's nose [TS]

00:07:17   a nonconformity mmhmm yeah like he's [TS]

00:07:22   pointing out this awful in a sort of [TS]

00:07:24   1984's society where everyone must [TS]

00:07:26   follow suit and have a normal black [TS]

00:07:30   noses and you don't know what the elves [TS]

00:07:31   do in room 101 well you know big brother [TS]

00:07:33   is watching you that's how he knows that [TS]

00:07:35   you've been not even [TS]

00:07:36   good exactly it's all connected big [TS]

00:07:39   Santa yeah yeah I also forgotten that [TS]

00:07:41   Sam as a friend mechanism of the burl [TS]

00:07:43   ives character is a he started talking a [TS]

00:07:46   framing mechanism right but it sounds [TS]

00:07:47   narrator he's completely it's just sort [TS]

00:07:49   of this strange no other talking stuff i [TS]

00:07:51   mean so we've gotta talking [TS]

00:07:53   self-propelled snowman and that's okay [TS]

00:07:54   too yeah we're talking both worlds [TS]

00:07:57   snowman this world always apparently the [TS]

00:07:59   only one of those so there's no one to [TS]

00:08:00   not conform with his kids yeah [TS]

00:08:04   Burl Ives can get away with a lot 3 i'm [TS]

00:08:07   pretty sure the snowman is only an [TS]

00:08:08   excuse to have somebody as good as Burl [TS]

00:08:10   Ives be in the special LOL yeah that's [TS]

00:08:13   true [TS]

00:08:13   no yeah yeah this is my favorite [TS]

00:08:15   christmas special when I was little I [TS]

00:08:17   remember like because it only aired once [TS]

00:08:20   a year we didn't have it like on VHS or [TS]

00:08:23   whatever and it was the thing I had to [TS]

00:08:25   watch and now it's been several years [TS]

00:08:27   since I've seen it and so I sat down to [TS]

00:08:29   watch it tonight in preparation for the [TS]

00:08:31   show and oh what a let you [TS]

00:08:35   oh my lord what a letdown but I kept [TS]

00:08:39   thinking what whatever it off was gay [TS]

00:08:43   like is this yeah that's interact as [TS]

00:08:46   long as his nose isn't great i think [TS]

00:08:48   you're really okay with that they are [TS]

00:08:51   elves different the first thing the [TS]

00:08:56   first thing that he's encouraged to do [TS]

00:08:58   when he meets the adolescent reindeer [TS]

00:09:00   for the first time to go talk to a girl [TS]

00:09:02   and so right but what was happening in [TS]

00:09:07   this world it is awful it is often but [TS]

00:09:10   it was not saying it's okay to be awful [TS]

00:09:12   to route off its expressly pointing out [TS]

00:09:14   that it's okay to be a misfit I mean [TS]

00:09:16   that's the whole point of the special [TS]

00:09:17   it's true they're just throwing all of [TS]

00:09:19   the beloved things about Christmas in [TS]

00:09:21   the North Pole and Santa Claus under the [TS]

00:09:23   bus to do it which is an interesting [TS]

00:09:25   choice for a 21-8 you didn't catch all [TS]

00:09:27   of that you're just like all these [TS]

00:09:29   people are being pretty awful but come [TS]

00:09:30   on it's Santa I know he's good deep down [TS]

00:09:32   he's just mentioned it even as he rolls [TS]

00:09:35   his eyes at the elves he has to deal [TS]

00:09:37   with these damn elves trying to sing [TS]

00:09:39   songs to him and a wife shoving food [TS]

00:09:42   down his throat just as he just as he [TS]

00:09:44   lost all the way he's gonna make weight [TS]

00:09:45   yeah i mean if you want you all the [TS]

00:09:47   later ranked and [TS]

00:09:48   as things are like the year without a [TS]

00:09:49   santa claus the story of Santa Claus he [TS]

00:09:51   starts out as a young thin guy and he [TS]

00:09:54   has been tortured by mrs. Claus all of [TS]

00:09:56   these years clearly just fattening them [TS]

00:09:58   up [TS]

00:09:59   let's talk about the elves because you [TS]

00:10:01   said that the elves I i enjoy Santa's [TS]

00:10:04   again it's like two aliens point kind of [TS]

00:10:07   enjoying it on a level that i did not [TS]

00:10:08   enjoy it before but there is that level [TS]

00:10:10   there which is why for example i enjoy [TS]

00:10:12   States is contempt for the elves i think [TS]

00:10:15   that is fantastic yeah the scene where [TS]

00:10:16   they sing to him [TS]

00:10:17   they're very proud of their songs [TS]

00:10:19   they're doing their best to sing it the [TS]

00:10:20   best possible way and just Santa reacts [TS]

00:10:23   just with utter disdain the holes are [TS]

00:10:25   looking away arms crossed and the whole [TS]

00:10:27   thing ends and they look to him for his [TS]

00:10:29   assessment he says well it needs work [TS]

00:10:31   I have to go I'm out of here he's gone [TS]

00:10:34   he's although I i also noticed in my [TS]

00:10:37   family knows this too this is basically [TS]

00:10:39   where will Ferrell is from in l.a yeah [TS]

00:10:42   it's very clear that itself is taking [TS]

00:10:44   this North Pole story from from this [TS]

00:10:47   special as like the most I think it's [TS]

00:10:49   the biggest influence on that movie [TS]

00:10:51   because i can see i could see the this [TS]

00:10:53   is the same characters although they're [TS]

00:10:54   less the adapter is much less awful that [TS]

00:10:57   then this Santa is but you don't spend [TS]

00:10:59   much time with that as nurse oh it's [TS]

00:11:00   possible he's just as I'm they make that [TS]

00:11:03   obvious with the opening of elf wear it [TS]

00:11:05   where it's all the stop-motion stuff [TS]

00:11:06   yeah it sounds direct there is no yeah [TS]

00:11:09   an elf they're actually caught their [TS]

00:11:10   kind though it's like actually elves [TS]

00:11:12   really feel bad for a matter their kind [TS]

00:11:15   of him but not here because they're not [TS]

00:11:16   because their way we meet Hermey the elf [TS]

00:11:18   who just wants to be a dentist and and [TS]

00:11:20   he doesn't fit in just like will ferrell [TS]

00:11:21   doesn't fit actually an elf and and this [TS]

00:11:25   leads to our body our buddy comedy are [TS]

00:11:27   mismatched buddy comedy with her me and [TS]

00:11:30   rudolf who did who basically are pushed [TS]

00:11:32   out onto an ice flow they decide to [TS]

00:11:34   leave the north pole in the middle of [TS]

00:11:35   the storm and because they are there's [TS]

00:11:37   no place for them there we gotta get [TS]

00:11:40   back up a second though because we [TS]

00:11:41   missed up miss Clarice [TS]

00:11:43   hello police [TS]

00:11:44   if you made it creepy glen and well yeah [TS]

00:11:47   with a bit where he's she's very [TS]

00:11:49   interested in him and he makes this [TS]

00:11:50   giant leap he's thrust ya there [TS]

00:11:53   there's no symbolism well the reason [TS]

00:11:55   that she's she's into him is at that [TS]

00:11:57   point he's wearing that enormous fake [TS]

00:11:59   black nose yes and you know they say [TS]

00:12:01   about the size of reindeers note now I [TS]

00:12:04   don't want to say it I don't know [TS]

00:12:07   actually was hoping you could tell me no [TS]

00:12:08   okay [TS]

00:12:10   this clearly predates self because by [TS]

00:12:13   that point the elves have learned the [TS]

00:12:15   lesson of Rudolph so they're nicer too [TS]

00:12:17   buddy [TS]

00:12:17   mhm okay all right at least someone [TS]

00:12:20   learned headcanon wonder is is the [TS]

00:12:22   enormous black fake nose and the speech [TS]

00:12:25   impediment really better than the tiny [TS]

00:12:26   glowing red nose is like the jimmy [TS]

00:12:29   durante of reindeer Jimmy Durante [TS]

00:12:31   narrated a different one [TS]

00:12:32   he did well I think they felt bad after [TS]

00:12:33   this of all the things they have a [TS]

00:12:36   single out about his difference but [TS]

00:12:37   that's the point of this right it's just [TS]

00:12:39   it doesn't even matter it's just he's [TS]

00:12:40   different from all the others he stands [TS]

00:12:42   out and then and conformity is the order [TS]

00:12:45   of Sam klutzes cruel northern eugenics [TS]

00:12:49   and conformity daughters self-respect is [TS]

00:12:52   more important than comfort [TS]

00:12:53   yeah it's a I'm gonna I'm gonna throw in [TS]

00:12:56   a sixties cartoon aside here by the way [TS]

00:12:58   I grew up on the classic totally weird [TS]

00:13:03   spiderman cartoon and while I was [TS]

00:13:05   watching this I I turned to my wife and [TS]

00:13:08   I said you know [TS]

00:13:09   Wow rules dad is like Jay jonah Jameson [TS]

00:13:13   from the spidey cartoon and then I went [TS]

00:13:15   on IMDb it is the voice agility and some [TS]

00:13:18   of the spiderman cartoon and in fact her [TS]

00:13:20   me is the voice of spider-man from the [TS]

00:13:23   spiderman cartoon network oh yes there's [TS]

00:13:27   more I looked it up there's actually I [TS]

00:13:28   think there are a bunch of people in it [TS]

00:13:30   who are in the spidermans but next time [TS]

00:13:32   you watch it just think the Donner is [TS]

00:13:33   actually just charge mrs. grant from now [TS]

00:13:35   on make sure Peter Parker place takes no [TS]

00:13:38   part in our reporter game yeah i'm tired [TS]

00:13:41   of these teenagers like Rudolph the same [TS]

00:13:44   guy [TS]

00:13:45   hermie senses tingling Oh Glenn no all [TS]

00:13:50   right let me tell you about a sponsor on [TS]

00:13:51   the uncomfortable this is it is a good [TS]

00:13:53   one [TS]

00:13:53   it's a kickstarter project from max [TS]

00:13:55   Temkin co-creator of cards against [TS]

00:13:57   humanity [TS]

00:13:58   it's got an interesting name are you [TS]

00:13:59   ready here it is its secret Hitler [TS]

00:14:02   that's right now you may be saying to [TS]

00:14:03   yourself why would you put Hitler in the [TS]

00:14:06   name of a product but you've got here [TS]

00:14:08   with this product is and it'll make [TS]

00:14:10   sense and i also subscribe to the mel [TS]

00:14:13   brooks line of thought which is the more [TS]

00:14:15   things we can say to demean or mock [TS]

00:14:17   hitler the better anyway secret Hitler [TS]

00:14:22   is a game it's a inspired by classic [TS]

00:14:26   party games like mafia or werewolf or [TS]

00:14:28   the resistance if you know those it [TS]

00:14:30   introduces some new mechanics to the [TS]

00:14:31   genre anyway if you're familiar with any [TS]

00:14:34   of those sort of social deduction games [TS]

00:14:36   you will get a little bit about what [TS]

00:14:38   secret Hitler is all about the liberal [TS]

00:14:40   team is trying to keep control of the [TS]

00:14:43   government this is definitely inspired [TS]

00:14:44   by the rise of the Nazis in World before [TS]

00:14:47   world war two and they are a majority [TS]

00:14:49   group right but they have distrust and [TS]

00:14:52   they need to learn to work together to [TS]

00:14:54   overcome fascism and assassinate Hitler [TS]

00:14:57   before he can take over the government [TS]

00:14:59   so it's super intense but it's also [TS]

00:15:02   really interesting and how it tries to [TS]

00:15:03   take a page out of history and [TS]

00:15:05   understand the dynamics that led to the [TS]

00:15:09   rise for somebody who did not have the [TS]

00:15:10   support of the majority but that person [TS]

00:15:13   ended up taking control of the [TS]

00:15:15   government so it is a little bit of [TS]

00:15:16   history and a little bit of social [TS]

00:15:19   commentary and also it falls into this [TS]

00:15:21   social deduction category for played [TS]

00:15:23   werewolf you know what i'm talking about [TS]

00:15:25   very fun and very cool it's on [TS]

00:15:27   Kickstarter now it's already funded [TS]

00:15:29   3,500 people have already backed it so [TS]

00:15:32   when you back it on Kickstarter which [TS]

00:15:33   you can do through december 23rd you're [TS]

00:15:36   going to get the game you're going to [TS]

00:15:37   get the game and you can learn a lot [TS]

00:15:38   more about it see it in action watch the [TS]

00:15:40   videos at secret Hitler dot-com that's [TS]

00:15:43   where you need to go secret Hitler com [TS]

00:15:44   max Temkin who created co-created cards [TS]

00:15:48   against humanity smart guy funny guy [TS]

00:15:50   this is a great idea for a game he's [TS]

00:15:52   done some other game design in the last [TS]

00:15:54   few years that I've really enjoyed i [TS]

00:15:55   encourage you to check it out especially [TS]

00:15:57   if you played any of those social [TS]

00:15:58   deduction games like mafia or werewolf [TS]

00:16:01   I think you will find secret Hitler a [TS]

00:16:03   really intriguing spin on the concepts [TS]

00:16:06   go to secret Hitler calm and thanks to [TS]

00:16:08   max and everybody else pine secret [TS]

00:16:11   Hitler com [TS]

00:16:11   for sponsoring the uncomfortable and by [TS]

00:16:14   the way Glenn was the secret Hitler all [TS]

00:16:16   along they go off and end up almost [TS]

00:16:19   being killed by the about the abominable [TS]

00:16:22   snowman snowman who is the cutest [TS]

00:16:24   monster ever I that poor things that [TS]

00:16:29   we're not there yet but that poor thing [TS]

00:16:31   they have a scale problem also and [TS]

00:16:34   losers [TS]

00:16:35   this is all my son notice that wasn't [TS]

00:16:36   figure them out the size of a mountain [TS]

00:16:38   and then later he he's just standing [TS]

00:16:40   inside an hour that's that's a feature [TS]

00:16:42   of rankin/bass like that so it's just [TS]

00:16:44   gonna grate some sweet day their spatial [TS]

00:16:47   awareness is terrible i mean towards the [TS]

00:16:48   beginning daughter like takes off her [TS]

00:16:50   flight and he's still inside the cave [TS]

00:16:52   different like how did he not get stuck [TS]

00:16:55   in the ceiling with his antlers he can [TS]

00:16:57   he can shrink which is unlike the other [TS]

00:16:59   reindeer and that's really freaky I've [TS]

00:17:01   put a lot of thought into my Rudolph [TS]

00:17:02   headcanon heavily now this is only [TS]

00:17:06   appropriate he does start enormous and [TS]

00:17:08   then and then get smaller when he needs [TS]

00:17:10   to be smaller but they avoid you know [TS]

00:17:11   what they say about reindeer with small [TS]

00:17:13   nose now I don't what do they say did [TS]

00:17:15   you might even say he grows oh so anyway [TS]

00:17:19   they end up they literally end up on an [TS]

00:17:21   ice floe in order to avoid the the [TS]

00:17:24   abominable snowman and and they end up [TS]

00:17:26   on the island of misfit toys which is a [TS]

00:17:28   whole set piece where there are there [TS]

00:17:30   are other nonconformist like them [TS]

00:17:33   including a Charlie and in the box [TS]

00:17:36   William which is skipper yeah exactly [TS]

00:17:41   Marianne on the rest and and and there's [TS]

00:17:45   a musical number about the about the [TS]

00:17:46   island of misfit my voice not going to [TS]

00:17:48   do something here though I'm few apps [TS]

00:17:49   which is so just sent like at first my [TS]

00:17:53   memory my headcanon was their abandoned [TS]

00:17:55   their that they're imperfect in the [TS]

00:17:57   elves like send them off there but in [TS]

00:18:00   this I realize there's a this Lots [TS]

00:18:02   flying lion of course and the flying [TS]

00:18:05   lion yeah goes around the world to [TS]

00:18:07   collide and so are they damaged by [TS]

00:18:09   children is this kind of toy story [TS]

00:18:11   scenario and then King what's-his-face [TS]

00:18:14   goes in the the the lion is as land the [TS]

00:18:17   there is actually there i'm telling the [TS]

00:18:21   same cameras you know [TS]

00:18:22   is yeah so yeah the the the facility [TS]

00:18:26   flying line this is it there is a toy [TS]

00:18:27   story thing I think I think I toy story [TS]

00:18:30   is inspired by this in some ways to [TS]

00:18:32   there is in fact a line in here about [TS]

00:18:33   how toys will always want to be played [TS]

00:18:35   with that that is a direct antecedent of [TS]

00:18:38   of the entire concept about how the boys [TS]

00:18:40   story world works [TS]

00:18:42   this is my thinking and and they don't [TS]

00:18:44   go into it for some reason but I'm [TS]

00:18:45   pretty confident that all the misfit [TS]

00:18:47   toys are actually the awful rejects that [TS]

00:18:49   hermes been making all these years I [TS]

00:18:53   heard that too yeah so it's really his [TS]

00:18:55   fault they're there in the first it [TS]

00:18:56   would be creative to get to the island [TS]

00:18:57   and Hermes worshipped as a god [TS]

00:19:00   fantastic no but this is my this is my [TS]

00:19:02   issue though is are these toys liver to [TS]

00:19:04   children and then King moonracer goes [TS]

00:19:06   open oh and he goes and collects them so [TS]

00:19:09   they're giving out and you make that [TS]

00:19:11   they failed the quality control is [TS]

00:19:12   really cool research going around the [TS]

00:19:14   world you know finding some of them so [TS]

00:19:16   maybe so [TS]

00:19:16   hey what he says that but you'll notice [TS]

00:19:18   he lives like half a at Arctic Circle [TS]

00:19:22   away from the North Pole right it's [TS]

00:19:24   pretty obvious where he's getting the [TS]

00:19:25   toys from low i said i think I've [TS]

00:19:27   thought a lot more about my headcanon [TS]

00:19:29   than they thought about the script yeah [TS]

00:19:30   it did not sound like cute little [TS]

00:19:32   elephant with polka dots in the sixties [TS]

00:19:35   is this a new invention because I [TS]

00:19:37   couldn't figure out why the cute polka [TS]

00:19:39   dotted elephant was a rejected toy [TS]

00:19:41   elephants don't have spots tour I know [TS]

00:19:44   that's what I thought but see we come a [TS]

00:19:46   long way back then had a nonconformity [TS]

00:19:49   was not allow always do you want to [TS]

00:19:50   accept that yeah you will at least admit [TS]

00:19:52   that the train with the square wheel [TS]

00:19:54   caboose is under garbage right but oh [TS]

00:19:56   yeah we're not there yet but it had to [TS]

00:19:58   be an aluminum tree haha i'm just saying [TS]

00:20:01   when they eventually deliver that kid [TS]

00:20:02   the the square wheel caboose train at [TS]

00:20:05   the very end when the misfit toys are [TS]

00:20:06   handed out that's get kids got to be on [TS]

00:20:08   the naughty list right Cole or square [TS]

00:20:10   real trade your choice [TS]

00:20:11   it's not that it's just like [TS]

00:20:13   aesthetically unpleasing square wheels [TS]

00:20:15   don't work is true just dragged along i [TS]

00:20:17   mean i've seen teddy bears from from [TS]

00:20:20   like the twenties and thirties and they [TS]

00:20:22   were not photorealistic so i just i [TS]

00:20:24   don't know like i have questions I guess [TS]

00:20:26   no one ever explained what's matter with [TS]

00:20:28   the doll either [TS]

00:20:29   yeah she's kind of fucking yeah so I [TS]

00:20:31   just assumed you had like one of her [TS]

00:20:33   buttons was in the wrong place or [TS]

00:20:34   something but you're right it's weird [TS]

00:20:36   weird [TS]

00:20:36   the judgmental but this whole thing is [TS]

00:20:37   about that right that's the whole thing [TS]

00:20:39   is weirdly its gentle yeah so they go so [TS]

00:20:41   they go back and and and they kick it [TS]

00:20:44   back into gear to the things that are [TS]

00:20:45   actually in the story and the and the [TS]

00:20:48   song because again speaking of your head [TS]

00:20:50   canon this whole thing is like [TS]

00:20:51   somebody's head canon of the song [TS]

00:20:54   Rudolph the red-nosed wait how would [TS]

00:20:55   that work [TS]

00:20:56   the what if there's an island of misfit [TS]

00:20:57   toys that's not mentioned at all in the [TS]

00:20:59   song but just throw it in there but they [TS]

00:21:00   get back on the plot where there's a [TS]

00:21:02   foggy Christmas Eve and Santa's has to [TS]

00:21:04   come to Rudolph and and use his glowing [TS]

00:21:07   nose in order to get the get the the [TS]

00:21:11   sleigh to because Christmas is ruined [TS]

00:21:13   otherwise again xmas on the precipice of [TS]

00:21:15   being ruined at all times and saved by [TS]

00:21:18   by rudolf who who's deformity has [TS]

00:21:20   suddenly become an asset conveniently [TS]

00:21:22   now I question the supposed utility of [TS]

00:21:24   Rudolph's hideous mutation and actually [TS]

00:21:28   the elves who are expert craftsmen could [TS]

00:21:31   quickly fashion some sort of head lamp [TS]

00:21:33   for the lead reindeer surely faster than [TS]

00:21:36   it takes to rejigger the harness know if [TS]

00:21:37   its seventh team nope they they tried a [TS]

00:21:40   whole bunch of them and they went up on [TS]

00:21:41   the island of misfit toys before he went [TS]

00:21:43   to go super tall so there's like a whole [TS]

00:21:45   like yeah they just filled with [TS]

00:21:47   headlamps they don't do I the lamps like [TS]

00:21:50   that the circuitry just doesn't work [TS]

00:21:52   they ran out of batteries of it it's a [TS]

00:21:55   really detailed headcanon rato of [TS]

00:21:57   malfunctioning headlamps is in here in [TS]

00:21:59   GV weekend but the lorry Alice as we [TS]

00:22:02   know interferes electrical signals and [TS]

00:22:04   prevents effective use of anything yeah [TS]

00:22:07   but then you can see things with the [TS]

00:22:09   aurora borealis we can't we can't ignore [TS]

00:22:11   the abominable snowman and my guidance [TS]

00:22:13   to him lets his let's talk about him [TS]

00:22:14   he's so he's so cute and then then the [TS]

00:22:19   weird dentist elf pulls all his teeth [TS]

00:22:22   how is he supposed to live I don't [TS]

00:22:25   armies almonds has the bumble devoured [TS]

00:22:28   other people we keep hearing about it we [TS]

00:22:30   don't see where's the evidence we do see [TS]

00:22:32   him attempting to eat one of the rain [TS]

00:22:34   he just waved it around [TS]

00:22:36   carried by that we like to savor his [TS]

00:22:38   food and it kind of looks like he was [TS]

00:22:40   trying to talk to them they're all the [TS]

00:22:42   cave [TS]

00:22:42   they're all gathered around him and he's [TS]

00:22:44   just kind of looking at him and I don't [TS]

00:22:46   know I call shenanigans they remember [TS]

00:22:48   they're all monstrous they are i mean [TS]

00:22:50   even our heroes are awful i mean her me [TS]

00:22:52   rips out all the snow monsters teeth and [TS]

00:22:54   ensure that surely breaks the dentist's [TS]

00:22:56   code of ethics by the way you constantly [TS]

00:22:58   throwing around that pickaxe encouraging [TS]

00:22:59   children to lick pics at pickaxes in the [TS]

00:23:02   middle of winter is not all right don't [TS]

00:23:05   worry because he will be able to feed [TS]

00:23:08   himself because there are four main food [TS]

00:23:10   groups candy candy cane candy corn and [TS]

00:23:13   syrup so he'll be able to take care of [TS]

00:23:15   yourself with some friends [TS]

00:23:17   that's why they need dentists in our [TS]

00:23:19   members only maybe that's where all the [TS]

00:23:21   sacrificed misfit reindeer in the future [TS]

00:23:23   will go just chose movie yeah yeah great [TS]

00:23:26   Yukon Cornelius after all of the teeth [TS]

00:23:29   have been ripped out of this poor [TS]

00:23:30   unassuming snow monster his first [TS]

00:23:32   instinct is to push him off a cliff [TS]

00:23:34   oh my god our hero is I think we need a [TS]

00:23:38   new version of Rudolph that's told from [TS]

00:23:40   the abominable snowman is perspective [TS]

00:23:41   like bailable you know and in Grandal I [TS]

00:23:44   think we need a grand ol because you [TS]

00:23:45   need bumble all Envy bubble and he only [TS]

00:23:47   does it [TS]

00:23:48   that's right Ellie just in the end he'll [TS]

00:23:50   II is happily living with the elbows [TS]

00:23:52   right is because he's gone through some [TS]

00:23:54   sort of reformation and training he's [TS]

00:23:56   somebody's gonna need a common l's [TS]

00:23:58   coming at all right uh any any other [TS]

00:24:05   thoughts about about Rudolph in general [TS]

00:24:07   lien has expressed her disappointment in [TS]

00:24:09   my childhood little rash [TS]

00:24:11   unlike the other two specials we're [TS]

00:24:12   going to talk about this one goes on 44 [TS]

00:24:15   double Lincoln hour-long special and and [TS]

00:24:18   that is one of my problems with it is [TS]

00:24:20   it's so slow and had they cut it in 30 [TS]

00:24:24   minutes they could probably have done a [TS]

00:24:26   fairly straight retelling of Rudolph the [TS]

00:24:28   red-nosed reindeer filler stuff and it [TS]

00:24:30   would have been a better special [TS]

00:24:31   together [TS]

00:24:31   well ranked invested that I mean almost [TS]

00:24:33   all other specials were an hour or 90 [TS]

00:24:35   minutes long [TS]

00:24:36   yeah I'd I knew that things over the [TS]

00:24:38   years have been cut as commercials had [TS]

00:24:39   become more and more plentiful but I had [TS]

00:24:41   forgotten there's like two song of [TS]

00:24:44   recaps that you know totally you don't [TS]

00:24:47   see anymore these days that you know [TS]

00:24:49   like you said [TS]

00:24:50   all the stuff doesn't need to be there [TS]

00:24:51   to tell the story I think the island of [TS]

00:24:54   misfit toys as part of its appeal and [TS]

00:24:56   that's not in the song and all that but [TS]

00:24:57   boy [TS]

00:24:58   yeah they're so there's an awful lot [TS]

00:25:00   that that goes on that this maybe not [TS]

00:25:02   not necessary it doesn't it space it is [TS]

00:25:05   pasted from a from a different time [TS]

00:25:06   perhaps but they had a whole hour to [TS]

00:25:08   fill and the song glass or three minutes [TS]

00:25:10   so what you're going to do it definitely [TS]

00:25:12   a different time I had forgotten just [TS]

00:25:14   how just how firmly delineating the [TS]

00:25:16   sexes the role of the sexes no other [TS]

00:25:19   boys played the reindeer games while the [TS]

00:25:20   girls watched and you know women don't [TS]

00:25:23   get to go to a doctor tries to tell his [TS]

00:25:25   wife you know do you know this is no [TS]

00:25:27   place for a woman I'm going to go find [TS]

00:25:28   it off his wife Shannon do you mean mrs. [TS]

00:25:31   Donner she has no name [TS]

00:25:34   she is a nameless female reindeer but [TS]

00:25:38   you'll note that when Donner heads off [TS]

00:25:41   looking for Rudolph telling her is man's [TS]

00:25:42   work she immediately says screw you [TS]

00:25:44   yes your honor of that is the way [TS]

00:25:45   history yeah couple things I want to [TS]

00:25:47   point out first of all you know for all [TS]

00:25:49   the talk of how great the misfits are [TS]

00:25:51   you'll note at the end that Santa [TS]

00:25:52   doesn't bother to hand-deliver the [TS]

00:25:54   misfit toys no he just keeled over [TS]

00:25:56   outside with an umbrella you don't want [TS]

00:25:58   to them there's probably even a house [TS]

00:26:00   down there is a hundred miles out over [TS]

00:26:13   potential barbette but i don't think [TS]

00:26:16   we'll get to this but i don't think that [TS]

00:26:17   Charlie Brown ever says good grief in [TS]

00:26:19   his christmas special but the elf [TS]

00:26:22   Foreman and Rudolph lays out a good [TS]

00:26:26   hearty good grave at one point so you [TS]

00:28:16   supply really cool science technology [TS]

00:28:18   shirts ministry of supply menswear made [TS]

00:28:21   smarter [TS]

00:28:22   let's move ahead to 1965 to a Charlie [TS]

00:28:25   Brown Christmas Charles Schultz's uh [TS]

00:28:28   Peanuts characters appear and a [TS]

00:28:30   Christmas special with with a music by [TS]

00:28:35   Vince Guaraldi and the plot of this [TS]

00:28:39   well Charlie Brown good old Charlie [TS]

00:28:40   Brown everybody hates him he gets talked [TS]

00:28:43   into directing a Christmas play by Lucy [TS]

00:28:46   who's really the director of the [TS]

00:28:48   Christmas play as some sort of elaborate [TS]

00:28:50   prank so but she doesn't have to do the [TS]

00:28:51   dirty work but can still say that she's [TS]

00:28:53   in charge behind she's a producer [TS]

00:28:57   perhaps I'm overlaying a little bit on [TS]

00:28:59   here and and they don't wanna listen to [TS]

00:29:01   Charlie Brown it's chaos they sent [TS]

00:29:05   Charlie Brown out to get a tree he goes [TS]

00:29:07   to a Christmas tree lot that's full of [TS]

00:29:08   like multicolored aluminum Christmas [TS]

00:29:10   trees and buys the saddest homeless [TS]

00:29:13   christmas tree you'll ever see [TS]

00:29:14   they mock infected then leave [TS]

00:29:16   needles are constantly coming off they [TS]

00:29:18   mock him for it when he returns it but [TS]

00:29:20   in the end he takes it back to to his [TS]

00:29:24   house i guess and and the it it's a [TS]

00:29:29   pretty nice tree after all and they all [TS]

00:29:31   see it and they wave their hands around [TS]

00:29:33   it becomes a much larger tree that is [TS]

00:29:35   well decorated magic [TS]

00:29:37   meanwhile in the beep lot of a Charlie [TS]

00:29:39   Brown Christmas Snoopy enters a [TS]

00:29:42   Christmas lights contest and winds and [TS]

00:29:45   that's the light for Charlie Brown [TS]

00:29:47   Christmas basically yeah [TS]

00:29:51   yes so i think i think this one still [TS]

00:29:54   more or less holds up [TS]

00:29:57   oh yeah absolutely old up because it's [TS]

00:29:59   insane [TS]

00:30:00   it is well the pace of it is crazy [TS]

00:30:03   because it you can you when you watch it [TS]

00:30:04   you realize you're just watching like [TS]

00:30:06   weekly comic strips that's it's the [TS]

00:30:08   wonderful thing about it is how gentle [TS]

00:30:10   it is i think and that's why yes just [TS]

00:30:12   sit back and sort of let it wash over [TS]

00:30:13   you and and that the slow pace you just [TS]

00:30:17   kind of you know kind of get in the [TS]

00:30:18   groove with the garage as soundtrack is [TS]

00:30:21   the MVP here because it really is always [TS]

00:30:23   there [TS]

00:30:23   I i listen to a year-round I was one of [TS]

00:30:27   my may be in my top 10 albums of all [TS]

00:30:29   genius [TS]

00:30:30   it's amazing Schroeder can get that jazz [TS]

00:30:32   trio out of his little piano well he's [TS]

00:30:34   good this is good but yeah it is it's [TS]

00:30:37   totally the music the couple days ago I [TS]

00:30:40   had students working on something and [TS]

00:30:42   somebody was like you know what [TS]

00:30:43   Christmas music I'm ready for christmas [TS]

00:30:45   music the center put on some Christmas [TS]

00:30:46   music and so I fired up Pandora and [TS]

00:30:48   vince guaraldi and you know here starts [TS]

00:30:50   the linus and lucy theme and the next [TS]

00:30:52   thing you know three for three quarters [TS]

00:30:54   of my kids they're working and their [TS]

00:30:55   heads are popping because they're and [TS]

00:30:57   dana and then of course the most [TS]

00:30:58   energetic one gets up and starts [TS]

00:31:00   imitating all the dances but can also be [TS]

00:31:02   the state you're doing it's just amazing [TS]

00:31:04   how mean everyone is Charlie Brown which [TS]

00:31:06   I realize the stick but somehow in the [TS]

00:31:08   strips it comes across the slightly more [TS]

00:31:09   gentle or it's a gag and she watched it [TS]

00:31:12   once you want and left a bunch of it [TS]

00:31:14   here in the last few weeks and i am just [TS]

00:31:16   like yeah everyone is a total jerk to [TS]

00:31:19   him like big there's no respect for his [TS]

00:31:21   feelings even in the slightest degree [TS]

00:31:22   but then then it's like the redemption [TS]

00:31:25   is all yeah I guess you're okay [TS]

00:31:27   he's like alright he's got PTSD the poor [TS]

00:31:29   kid so what I've said about this on at [TS]

00:31:31   the point of our previous holiday [TS]

00:31:33   episodes is that the the individual [TS]

00:31:36   elements of this should totally not work [TS]

00:31:39   together [TS]

00:31:40   I mean the animation is halting at best [TS]

00:31:42   the fact that the jazz music as great as [TS]

00:31:46   it is is mixed in with this particular [TS]

00:31:47   show is really weird [TS]

00:31:49   yes they the use of kids who couldn't [TS]

00:31:51   even read so they had to feed them one [TS]

00:31:53   line at a time should have been a train [TS]

00:31:55   wreck [TS]

00:31:56   Sally especially is like can barely even [TS]

00:31:59   get the words out [TS]

00:32:01   ok which is the best she's the best part [TS]

00:32:02   I know I know I know it's just funny [TS]

00:32:04   because it is all it is genuinely a [TS]

00:32:06   little kid [TS]

00:32:08   yeah and it's I mean it comes out so [TS]

00:32:09   natural even though it's so unnatural [TS]

00:32:11   and and but somehow the the the [TS]

00:32:14   combination of these weird disparate [TS]

00:32:17   things that should totally not work [TS]

00:32:18   makes such a beautiful pie i guess but [TS]

00:32:24   yeah I mean it just it works so well and [TS]

00:32:26   it really shouldn't I mean and you can [TS]

00:32:28   kind of understand like what I mean [TS]

00:32:30   everything was done in six months I [TS]

00:32:31   guess we're gonna stretch it i guess [TS]

00:32:35   they finished in a couple of weeks [TS]

00:32:36   before it was supposed to air and I [TS]

00:32:40   imagine the animating the peanuts gang [TS]

00:32:41   must have been just this totally [TS]

00:32:43   difficult undertaking since I mean [TS]

00:32:44   strips the characters don't follow any [TS]

00:32:47   of the known laws of physics right their [TS]

00:32:49   heads change shape when they turn and [TS]

00:32:51   all sorts of weird stuff and somehow [TS]

00:32:53   they managed to do it in this short [TS]

00:32:54   period of time and make it all work [TS]

00:32:56   which is crazy that there's a there's a [TS]

00:32:57   great onstage there's a camera shift [TS]

00:33:00   where you go from straight onto to side [TS]

00:33:03   like you're looking out from the wings [TS]

00:33:04   and it's really funny because it's like [TS]

00:33:06   well we only really have these two [TS]

00:33:07   angles of the characters being drawn so [TS]

00:33:11   we're there either from the front or [TS]

00:33:12   from the side and they do it and it it [TS]

00:33:15   works [TS]

00:33:16   yeah it's it's it's it works that they [TS]

00:33:18   make it look like a moving version of a [TS]

00:33:20   comic strip which is what it is so [TS]

00:33:21   that's fine i also this this is actually [TS]

00:33:24   a very strange Christmas special because [TS]

00:33:27   it actually involves Christ I know that [TS]

00:33:29   sounds bizarre but actually I was gonna [TS]

00:33:31   wreck the thing to once i know there's [TS]

00:33:33   like because it goes off and starts [TS]

00:33:35   reading from the bible the bible reading [TS]

00:33:37   right in the middle of this thing to say [TS]

00:33:39   in those [TS]

00:33:40   not my religion I like the fact that [TS]

00:33:41   actually in a Christmas special where [TS]

00:33:44   Charlie round starts the thing off [TS]

00:33:45   unhappy with the commercialization that [TS]

00:33:47   you get the payoff that Linus actually [TS]

00:33:49   you know read from the Bible and like [TS]

00:33:51   you know even not being a christian i [TS]

00:33:53   preciate that in a show that they're [TS]

00:33:55   actually you know this is going on it's [TS]

00:33:56   cool and the reading is so simple and [TS]

00:33:59   sweet [TS]

00:33:59   yeah yeah yeahs Linus voice that it even [TS]

00:34:03   as a non-believer it actually sort of [TS]

00:34:04   moves me a little bit exact well i know [TS]

00:34:06   that the nice thing is it doesn't it [TS]

00:34:08   doesn't force any religion on you it [TS]

00:34:10   doesn't specify that any of them are any [TS]

00:34:12   particular religion [TS]

00:34:13   it just says here's why this holiday is [TS]

00:34:16   here and that's why we're here and it's [TS]

00:34:20   about this baby and that's that and and [TS]

00:34:23   it's okay you can take from that [TS]

00:34:25   whatever you want and it's just it's i [TS]

00:34:28   mean it it really answered like a tabula [TS]

00:34:29   rasa it's wonderful that way and and [TS]

00:34:32   then you know at the very end they all [TS]

00:34:34   come together and sing hark the herald [TS]

00:34:35   angels sing which again you don't often [TS]

00:34:37   hear real Christmas carols in a [TS]

00:34:39   Christmas special app and it's just I i [TS]

00:34:43   tier of every time i hear Linus now [TS]

00:34:45   likes place it's you know it's just that [TS]

00:34:48   moment yeah yeah and I'm and from that [TS]

00:34:50   point on I'm gonna I'm done you know how [TS]

00:34:52   Fred Rogers there's the fred rogers [TS]

00:34:54   quote about look for the helpers when [TS]

00:34:56   bad things are happening me look for the [TS]

00:34:57   helpers I look for Snoopy and in [TS]

00:35:00   especially the special because he's just [TS]

00:35:02   hilarious throughout the whole thing [TS]

00:35:04   he's just you know he gets he makes [TS]

00:35:06   everybody lighter you know he's playing [TS]

00:35:09   on the ice and you get everybody two [TS]

00:35:10   together on this like I don't know I [TS]

00:35:12   skating conga line decorates his his his [TS]

00:35:16   house he's you know dancing on the piano [TS]

00:35:19   and and I think that that Snoopy might [TS]

00:35:22   actually be one of those connecting [TS]

00:35:23   threads that makes it all work because [TS]

00:35:25   he's their agent of chaos and you didn't [TS]

00:35:28   yeah I think wisely hear the rain in the [TS]

00:35:31   snoopy shenanigans a little bit where [TS]

00:35:34   you don't I mean as much as I love the [TS]

00:35:36   great pumpkin that sequence with the Red [TS]

00:35:39   Baron is interminable yeah yeah i want [TS]

00:35:42   to point out that i think- we're just [TS]

00:35:44   talking about it i know but i think he's [TS]

00:35:45   actually underrated here and elsewhere i [TS]

00:35:47   mean i think he gets the spotlight [TS]

00:35:48   literally but he's the only one who [TS]

00:35:50   respects Charlie right listens to us [TS]

00:35:52   right [TS]

00:35:52   he go [TS]

00:35:53   it's always when we goes tree shopping [TS]

00:35:55   with him right everybody else is just [TS]

00:35:56   sending them off to get rid of him [TS]

00:35:57   the Atlantis is not a jerky actually [TS]

00:35:59   genuinely may feel sorry for me actually [TS]

00:36:01   generally like to spend time with no he [TS]

00:36:02   said he's the sidekick and analyst and [TS]

00:36:04   and he's like charlie brown toyota yeah [TS]

00:36:07   I understood for the first time ever [TS]

00:36:09   having seen this probably hundreds of [TS]

00:36:11   times as a reason I yelled come on [TS]

00:36:13   earlier i realized that Lucy actually [TS]

00:36:16   does Charlie Brown a genuine act of [TS]

00:36:18   kindness [TS]

00:36:19   yes ug actually asked questions i think [TS]

00:36:21   completely on ironically to direct the [TS]

00:36:23   Christmas play and then she offers to [TS]

00:36:24   help him do it [TS]

00:36:26   I mean it happens that it's gonna be a [TS]

00:36:27   train wreck and we know that going in [TS]

00:36:29   but it's sheet you really does do a nice [TS]

00:36:32   selfless thing for Charlie Brown and [TS]

00:36:34   they're walking away she sort of [TS]

00:36:35   commiserates with him and and I realized [TS]

00:36:37   that she Lucy's not all bad either [TS]

00:36:39   no I was thinking that must have been [TS]

00:36:41   really hard for her although this is the [TS]

00:36:42   same world who later tries to punch a [TS]

00:36:44   dog in the face right yeah but wouldn't [TS]

00:36:46   you know [TS]

00:36:47   no not Snoopy I commercialism right so [TS]

00:36:51   here we get the you know it's so [TS]

00:36:53   commercial this holiday so commercial [TS]

00:36:55   and I guess this was the thing to talk [TS]

00:36:58   about in the mid-sixties that's the name [TS]

00:37:00   of this and and the grinch in a way I [TS]

00:37:02   think it [TS]

00:37:03   the theme is like christmas has become [TS]

00:37:05   this thing that isn't it isn't what it [TS]

00:37:07   used to mean man [TS]

00:37:09   which is funny because now you know what [TS]

00:37:13   is left but commercial hit something [TS]

00:37:15   Christmastime commercialism yeah it's [TS]

00:37:18   it's black friday weekend thanks getting [TS]

00:37:20   yeah exactly so so I think it's on one [TS]

00:37:24   level I think it is pressure on another [TS]

00:37:26   level I think it's kind of quaint that [TS]

00:37:28   this is the concern but that's what [TS]

00:37:30   that's what leads to the power of minus [TS]

00:37:31   giving his reading is that you know that [TS]

00:37:33   the whole message here is that it's easy [TS]

00:37:37   to get caught up in all of the things [TS]

00:37:39   that are around christmas and the [TS]

00:37:40   trappings of it without you know and [TS]

00:37:42   then you lose perspective about what [TS]

00:37:44   it's really about whether it is very [TS]

00:37:45   specifically about this religious [TS]

00:37:48   holiday or even more generally the [TS]

00:37:51   meaning behind it rather than the all of [TS]

00:37:55   the mechanisms of you know get a present [TS]

00:37:57   and go over here and and do this and do [TS]

00:37:59   that instead of the celebration and the [TS]

00:38:02   love and the family and all those things [TS]

00:38:03   I just I go back to Sally you know like [TS]

00:38:05   we talked about earlier [TS]

00:38:06   earlier and how I actually looked up on [TS]

00:38:08   wikipedia i tried different to find how [TS]

00:38:10   old she was in this I figured like three [TS]

00:38:12   or four you know and just just like that [TS]

00:38:15   she knows you know if you've ever [TS]

00:38:18   written a christmas list or gift list [TS]

00:38:20   for a little kid like they know exactly [TS]

00:38:21   what we want [TS]

00:38:23   how about tens and twenties maybe it's a [TS]

00:38:26   minute [TS]

00:38:27   I wanted to call it how great i think [TS]

00:38:29   the the background art is in some of [TS]

00:38:31   these specials particularly the [TS]

00:38:33   watercolors that they use for the night [TS]

00:38:34   skies the blandishments there they're [TS]

00:38:37   beautiful i mean that the coloring is [TS]

00:38:39   fantastic i love when they go out [TS]

00:38:41   shopping for Christmas trees and if ya [TS]

00:38:43   gettin into the sunset at the opening of [TS]

00:38:45   the great pumpkin tooth they're just [TS]

00:38:46   somehow perfectly evocative of the [TS]

00:38:48   season that they're trying to represent [TS]

00:38:49   one of the things I love about the music [TS]

00:38:52   is how a lot of it wasn't meant as [TS]

00:38:55   christmas music and it was bill melendez [TS]

00:38:59   listening to some of the some of the [TS]

00:39:01   girls just random stuff i mean he didn't [TS]

00:39:03   even write a score specifically for this [TS]

00:39:05   they picked some random stuff and the [TS]

00:39:08   song we all know as christmas time is [TS]

00:39:10   here he just went events would be right [TS]

00:39:12   if i write some lyrics for this because [TS]

00:39:13   it sounds kind of Christmassy and that's [TS]

00:39:16   how that [TS]

00:39:16   oh that's was born now it's gonna really [TS]

00:39:18   yeah i think of the jazz piano stuff now [TS]

00:39:21   is being kind of innately Christmassy [TS]

00:39:22   which of course it isn't but but for HCL [TS]

00:39:25   even Christmas yet [TS]

00:39:26   yeah this is my favorite I i would say [TS]

00:39:29   this is probably my favorite Christmas [TS]

00:39:30   album that when when thanksgiving passes [TS]

00:39:32   and the moratorium was lifted vince [TS]

00:39:34   guaraldi comes out and he's being played [TS]

00:39:37   by me [TS]

00:39:38   pretty much yeah like constantly for [TS]

00:39:41   this is your present wrapping music now [TS]

00:39:43   and forever [TS]

00:39:44   yep I could I could probably skip every [TS]

00:39:47   other Christmas album and just leave [TS]

00:39:49   this one [TS]

00:39:50   yeah i think so i really like that every [TS]

00:39:52   small movement that Pigpen makes even [TS]

00:39:54   just turning his clouds billowing up [TS]

00:39:57   around is it a lot of nice little [TS]

00:40:00   details like that i would like to take a [TS]

00:42:21   go to Mac wilton.com let's move on to [TS]

00:42:24   whoville in 1966 is how the grinch stole [TS]

00:42:27   christmas how did he do then a dr. Seuss [TS]

00:42:31   book come to life like like a like a as [TS]

00:42:35   if in your imagination at what would a [TS]

00:42:37   dr. Seuss book like it'd be like if it [TS]

00:42:39   sprung to life and through the director [TS]

00:42:42   Chuck Jones classic cartoon director [TS]

00:42:45   Chuck Jones we get this and narrated by [TS]

00:42:47   Boris Karloff and as as the narrator and [TS]

00:42:52   of course the voice of the grinch [TS]

00:42:54   evidently speaking through a heavily [TS]

00:42:56   muffled Trump so i was i was going to [TS]

00:42:58   say I wonder what the story is it sounds [TS]

00:43:00   it sounds like he did this narration on [TS]

00:43:02   the phone [TS]

00:43:03   yes and I will not understand it isn't [TS]

00:43:05   that when he speaks is the Grinch the [TS]

00:43:06   trumpet is also filled with mud like [TS]

00:43:08   it's already horrible and it becomes [TS]

00:43:10   sometimes world and it's not i used to [TS]

00:43:13   think it was it was in my mind I'm like [TS]

00:43:15   well that must be the crappy sound of [TS]

00:43:17   the thing but no there's plenty of [TS]

00:43:18   dynamic range in all the other sounds in [TS]

00:43:20   this it is adjust the voice of Boris [TS]

00:43:24   Karloff and a very sometimes it's worse [TS]

00:43:26   sometimes it's better I wonder if they [TS]

00:43:28   only could get him for like one [TS]

00:43:29   recording session that wasn't that good [TS]

00:43:31   or there was a technical problem or or [TS]

00:43:33   he did phone it in there using yet it [TS]

00:43:36   was on its dying breath yeah exactly [TS]

00:43:38   there's something terribly wrong with [TS]

00:43:40   exits [TS]

00:43:41   yeah it's just something is very bad [TS]

00:43:43   it's it's a shame because it and it's [TS]

00:43:45   it's great but yet he he does sound like [TS]

00:43:47   he is calling on the phone to read you [TS]

00:43:49   the story he was very very old at that [TS]

00:43:51   point [TS]

00:43:52   yeah well that that's why I wonder if he [TS]

00:43:54   was unable to unable to do it or they [TS]

00:43:57   had to bring some equipment somewhere [TS]

00:43:58   and it was in in less than perfect [TS]

00:44:00   circumstances to record it [TS]

00:44:02   I mean it was like he passed away three [TS]

00:44:04   years later she is not it's a the the [TS]

00:44:06   singing is by what's getting thorough [TS]

00:44:09   Ravens right there or great Souls I tony [TS]

00:44:12   the tiger [TS]

00:44:14   I can't do it that low no one cooler in [TS]

00:44:16   warrant mr. Grinch also well featured in [TS]

00:44:20   The Haunted Mansion [TS]

00:44:21   oh yeah he's low voice singer in the [TS]

00:44:25   graveyard scene and his head is one of [TS]

00:44:27   the bus as somebody who has read many [TS]

00:44:30   many dr. Seuss books to my children I i [TS]

00:44:32   enjoy this story I enjoy the fact that [TS]

00:44:34   there [TS]

00:44:35   so many Seussian aspects to it the fact [TS]

00:44:37   that that there at one point is a list [TS]

00:44:39   of nonsensical things that goes on and [TS]

00:44:41   on and on [TS]

00:44:42   that is the most dr. seuss thing ever [TS]

00:44:44   the list of various nonsensical things [TS]

00:44:47   that are in that rhythm with those [TS]

00:44:48   rhymes made-up words it's so it's so [TS]

00:44:50   great and that the grinch I'll what I [TS]

00:44:54   love about the plot of this is it is [TS]

00:44:55   just he is just the inverse Santa Claus [TS]

00:44:57   he sneaks into everybody at buddy's [TS]

00:44:59   houses on Christmas Eve and takes all [TS]

00:45:01   their stuff i think that's so great [TS]

00:45:03   addressed to Santa Claus and once he's [TS]

00:45:06   done with everything else he's eating [TS]

00:45:07   the food is taking all the presence then [TS]

00:45:09   he then he drags the Christmas tree over [TS]

00:45:10   to the gym need to throw that thing up [TS]

00:45:12   there and only then is he spotted by [TS]

00:45:14   little Cindy Lou Who I so i love i love [TS]

00:45:17   the the story of it and in the end the [TS]

00:45:19   plot resolution is basically that the [TS]

00:45:21   grinch realizes the Christmas is ok [TS]

00:45:23   after all and then we just fine but what [TS]

00:45:26   I like Charlie Brown did but what I like [TS]

00:45:28   about about it is unlike unlike so many [TS]

00:45:32   of the Christmas specials christmas is [TS]

00:45:33   never in jeopardy because the grinch [TS]

00:45:35   essentially does do his you know the his [TS]

00:45:38   evil plan to ruin Christmas and it [TS]

00:45:40   doesn't work because the whos in [TS]

00:45:42   whoville are just super happy and they [TS]

00:45:44   get what Christmas is all about about [TS]

00:45:46   like Charlie Brown and so it's all fine [TS]

00:45:49   and that's when his heart grows many [TS]

00:45:51   sizes in the Grinch's defense the who's [TS]

00:45:54   at least in televised form are utterly [TS]

00:45:56   horrible with their infernal flu flu [TS]

00:45:58   bezane they're awful tartan don't hate [TS]

00:46:01   the following their hooves and banging [TS]

00:46:03   their cart Incas yeah they are you [TS]

00:46:05   geology that makes absolutely no sense i [TS]

00:46:07   mean when you've got like it apparently [TS]

00:46:09   a fully adult thing handing this giant [TS]

00:46:11   strawberry to a two-year-old who dwarfs [TS]

00:46:14   him [TS]

00:46:14   they're just so loud and off-putting [TS]

00:46:16   whose are not sympathetic characters we [TS]

00:46:18   never had a problem with Christmas [TS]

00:46:20   spatial relations space [TS]

00:46:22   yeah this is Gail I'm just saying that I [TS]

00:46:25   too would feel compelled to take their [TS]

00:46:26   Popguns Pamplona Spain to Kazan drums [TS]

00:46:28   checkerboards bizzle banks popcorn and [TS]

00:46:30   plums it so I understand what the Grinch [TS]

00:46:33   is coming from here I can think is I [TS]

00:46:34   think you started right I don't know [TS]

00:46:35   about agree with his methods but i think [TS]

00:46:37   his attitude is correct [TS]

00:46:39   interesting i also wonder why does cindy [TS]

00:46:41   lou who sit at the head of the table are [TS]

00:46:44   they ruled by her she's yeah she's like [TS]

00:46:46   Anthony in that Twilight's I just [TS]

00:46:48   to say is this anthony suggestion is [TS]

00:46:50   mind control them all with your creepy [TS]

00:46:51   antenna what's it's good that she's in [TS]

00:46:54   charity it's real good [TS]

00:46:56   mr. Grinch so this is actually my or was [TS]

00:47:01   growing up my least favorite Christmas [TS]

00:47:03   special [TS]

00:47:04   oh and I didn't grow up my mom didn't [TS]

00:47:06   read dr. Seuss to me and I had books but [TS]

00:47:08   she didn't she didn't read them to me [TS]

00:47:10   I I remember her refusing to read the [TS]

00:47:13   spring but I didn't like like he kind of [TS]

00:47:17   scared me the grinch kind of scared me [TS]

00:47:19   and the fact that he had begun of that [TS]

00:47:21   low weird voice through the tuba and [TS]

00:47:24   that kind of freaked me out and and like [TS]

00:47:27   I don't know it and even still I can [TS]

00:47:30   watch it and it brings up of course this [TS]

00:47:31   childhood feelings are like I don't this [TS]

00:47:33   makes me uncomfortable and I really [TS]

00:47:35   don't know why is an adult and but yeah [TS]

00:47:38   maybe I'm i think i'm one of the very [TS]

00:47:40   few people who actually doesn't really [TS]

00:47:42   have an affinity for dr. Seuss [TS]

00:47:44   oh you're breaking my heart your [TS]

00:47:46   personal guard [TS]

00:47:47   I'm sorry the creatures you know and [TS]

00:47:48   he's screwed like character right he [TS]

00:47:50   just doesn't want this and he's got his [TS]

00:47:51   and he's got his dog sidekick who is [TS]

00:47:53   adorable and funny x long-suffering all [TS]

00:47:56   yeah yeah he's like her me [TS]

00:47:59   Oh although we never removes anyone's [TS]

00:48:02   teeth forcibly so it's true strong point [TS]

00:48:05   yeah i'll agree with the lien that this [TS]

00:48:07   was not my favorite christmas special [TS]

00:48:10   when I was very young that you know I [TS]

00:48:12   was all about Charlie Brown and the [TS]

00:48:13   rankin/bass and stuff like that up but I [TS]

00:48:15   still watched it because I was a dr. [TS]

00:48:17   Seuss fan and it was later on the older [TS]

00:48:20   I got and the more experience i had [TS]

00:48:22   seeing Looney Tunes cartoons and they're [TS]

00:48:24   different areas this is the visuals are [TS]

00:48:27   so Chuck Jones berry and you know that's [TS]

00:48:31   a problem I have with us yeah and i [TS]

00:48:33   think it's it's just that i grew up i [TS]

00:48:34   think seeing Chuck Jones animation every [TS]

00:48:37   damn day but it's it's not a rare [TS]

00:48:39   commodity like the peanuts specials that [TS]

00:48:40   something is all the time to the grinch [TS]

00:48:42   always friends just a little bit i don't [TS]

00:48:44   know generic and kinda like a road [TS]

00:48:46   runner cartoon a few points right yeah [TS]

00:48:48   for me I love it I love that the context [TS]

00:48:51   that I associate with Chuck Jones being [TS]

00:48:53   in this totally different environment [TS]

00:48:54   and yet you know some of the things come [TS]

00:48:57   out the the evil grin that grows until [TS]

00:49:00   it's impossible [TS]

00:49:01   and the extra beat of the Santa Claus [TS]

00:49:05   the tip of the cap falling after [TS]

00:49:06   everything I was yelling you know all [TS]

00:49:08   those things as as i get older and know [TS]

00:49:11   more about art and cartooning and all [TS]

00:49:13   those sort of things I appreciate that [TS]

00:49:15   now and I like the greatest thing for me [TS]

00:49:17   is the peak of Mount crumpit which is [TS]

00:49:19   awesomely terrifying is this letter [TS]

00:49:21   there that's a great sequence right then [TS]

00:49:23   and the whole balancing and [TS]

00:49:25   teeter-tottering yeah I like it better [TS]

00:49:27   now than I am I did as a kid for some [TS]

00:49:31   reason and I think the ring that stuff [TS]

00:49:32   doesn't I don't like as much now because [TS]

00:49:34   now i look at mega really come on and it [TS]

00:49:36   but with a green chili I appreciate it [TS]

00:49:38   more and I think maybe that is because [TS]

00:49:39   of liking dr. Seuss and and and reading [TS]

00:49:44   it to my kids and and appreciating the [TS]

00:49:47   whole kind of weird package of chuck [TS]

00:49:49   jones and and Boris Karloff with the [TS]

00:49:52   narration and the music with that [TS]

00:49:54   they're especially the repeating you're [TS]

00:49:55   a mean one mr. Grinch throughout the [TS]

00:49:57   right thing which is a great song but [TS]

00:49:59   that's alright god lyrics [TS]

00:50:01   yes but from garlic in your soul of [TS]

00:50:02   arsenic sauce that's like you know the [TS]

00:50:04   more you can hear it as an adult and you [TS]

00:50:05   can pick out all the big words that you [TS]

00:50:07   don't know as a kid and it's just [TS]

00:50:09   funnier every time I just like your [TS]

00:50:11   heart is full of unwashed socks your [TS]

00:50:13   soul is full of gunk you have fantastic [TS]

00:50:16   nauseous super nauseous [TS]

00:50:18   you're freaking dirty jockey and you [TS]

00:50:21   drive a crooked hall and again it's one [TS]

00:50:24   of those that things that you know [TS]

00:50:25   commercial sort of started squeezing [TS]

00:50:26   things in and you've lost like a verse [TS]

00:50:29   or two and a couple of the transition [TS]

00:50:30   scenes where he still busy taking [TS]

00:50:32   everything and up from everybody I was [TS]

00:50:35   not crazy about the book when I was [TS]

00:50:36   little but I loved the chuck jones [TS]

00:50:38   animation and and again it's those [TS]

00:50:40   little touches that he threw in there [TS]

00:50:41   and i love the song the song is such a [TS]

00:50:43   good song and it's it's you know [TS]

00:50:46   ravenscraft to such a wonderful job with [TS]

00:50:48   it you know and so even even when I was [TS]

00:50:51   little I wasn't crazy about the show or [TS]

00:50:53   the story but I watched it for the art [TS]

00:50:56   and the music and and i'm happy i just [TS]

00:51:00   found this out this is bugged me for [TS]

00:51:02   decades in Snoopy come home he's also [TS]

00:51:06   the voice of no zone [TS]

00:51:08   Oh [TS]

00:51:09   and you know it's it's one of those [TS]

00:51:11   things that never occurred to me to look [TS]

00:51:13   up but now that we're all talking about [TS]

00:51:15   it's like oh let's see what else he did [TS]

00:51:16   look up so is it as a song I mean [TS]

00:51:19   there's not a lot to it what what is [TS]

00:51:21   great about it is the words that are in [TS]

00:51:22   it and the fact that repetition is it [TS]

00:51:24   gets you know you you get to what's [TS]

00:51:26   going to come was gonna say this time [TS]

00:51:28   around and that's the just as a as a [TS]

00:51:31   thing to pull you through the story it's [TS]

00:51:32   it's so great i mean they're they're [TS]

00:51:34   delightful words it yet it's not it's [TS]

00:51:36   not like a song it's not fully [TS]

00:51:38   constructed song but he he's kind of the [TS]

00:51:41   the MVP of the song because he acts it's [TS]

00:51:45   so thoroughly and he pulls you along I [TS]

00:51:47   mean that you can be good just saying it [TS]

00:51:48   you're a mean one mr. Grinch but it's [TS]

00:51:51   like you're a mean one [TS]

00:51:53   I mean you can peel his mouth wrapping [TS]

00:51:55   around every word it'sit's the the [TS]

00:51:59   religious aspect here is a little bit of [TS]

00:52:00   a prodigal son is a mix up the prodigal [TS]

00:52:03   son doesn't usually steal everything and [TS]

00:52:05   then come back with that but is that [TS]

00:52:07   it's like that that was in the apartment [TS]

00:52:08   first people you know you be roast the [TS]

00:52:11   category the fatted calf and you serve [TS]

00:52:13   it out of the cabin a prodigal sons at [TS]

00:52:15   the right side right and so Susan Ballou [TS]

00:52:18   who is the added humour blue Matthew [TS]

00:52:20   must be some roast beast you wrote the [TS]

00:52:22   roast beast but I think there's a there [TS]

00:52:25   is a biblical thing is like he commits a [TS]

00:52:27   kind of wrong with no one is aware of it [TS]

00:52:29   so it's actually odd more thing that he [TS]

00:52:31   comes back and they accepted as if he's [TS]

00:52:33   giving them a gift because they are so [TS]

00:52:34   free from materialism and then he sat at [TS]

00:52:37   the right hand of God you know the city [TS]

00:52:38   like he's a this is the truth of Santa [TS]

00:52:42   Clauses he steals all your stuff and [TS]

00:52:43   just give it back to you and detests [TS]

00:52:47   roast beef initially because he's on the [TS]

00:52:49   side of the roast beast easily gifter [TS]

00:52:51   vegan but he's turned to the good side [TS]

00:52:54   then he's happy to carve the Beast [TS]

00:52:56   himself [TS]

00:52:56   what kind of animal does that come from [TS]

00:52:58   it had no bones throughout the beating [TS]

00:53:01   so yeah it's Abby's it's a place with [TS]

00:53:03   roasted a boneless beasts of the whose [TS]

00:53:06   they don't talk about it it's a flim [TS]

00:53:12   hammer flugel it had a glowing no older [TS]

00:53:14   they get [TS]

00:53:16   and then they become the feasts car by [TS]

00:53:18   slim school it's how the cycle of [TS]

00:53:20   who-ville continues the ones who walk [TS]

00:53:23   away from Whoville I got dark side [TS]

00:53:26   so here's the here's the question of [TS]

00:53:29   these three what one now who haven't [TS]

00:53:32   really watched them is the one that you [TS]

00:53:33   like the best [TS]

00:53:36   Charlie Brown saying yeah Charlie Brown [TS]

00:53:39   natural around Steve Charlie Brown [TS]

00:53:41   without a doubt because in addition to [TS]

00:53:43   still be entertaining as more than just [TS]

00:53:45   nostalgia it also still works i think [TS]

00:53:49   i'm an emotional level which which the [TS]

00:53:52   others well Rudolph's simply doesn't and [TS]

00:53:54   the grinch does to a lesser extent I [TS]

00:53:56   think but Charlie Brown still works on [TS]

00:53:58   me like gangbusters and it's still love [TS]

00:54:01   it [TS]

00:54:01   yep the kids of today still enjoyed my [TS]

00:54:03   kids would this was all the selected [TS]

00:54:06   when we were driving for thanksgiving or [TS]

00:54:08   christmas to to various relatives houses [TS]

00:54:10   long long distances the video that would [TS]

00:54:13   get watch the most would be the Charlie [TS]

00:54:15   Brown holiday videos the Christmas and [TS]

00:54:17   and the great pumpkin and thanksgiving [TS]

00:54:20   and they would just just endlessly in [TS]

00:54:22   fact i think my daughter would just [TS]

00:54:23   watch charlie brown thanksgiving all [TS]

00:54:27   year round which is baffling to me but [TS]

00:54:30   it was there was something about it just [TS]

00:54:31   she found it very soothing the peanuts [TS]

00:54:33   are soothing just in general and I was [TS]

00:54:35   just thinking about it this morning that [TS]

00:54:37   you know if you think about a lot of [TS]

00:54:39   classic Christmas stories and even even [TS]

00:54:41   things that have been adapted over and [TS]

00:54:43   over again like you know what sitcom [TS]

00:54:44   hasn't done a christmas carol and you [TS]

00:54:46   know mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol [TS]

00:54:47   everyone talks about who i used to watch [TS]

00:54:49   that when I was yeah and it's wonderful [TS]

00:54:50   life that and but but they're all about [TS]

00:54:53   one person changing even it's a [TS]

00:54:55   wonderful life is about George Bailey [TS]

00:54:57   changing right and and discovering his [TS]

00:55:00   own goodness and all that how important [TS]

00:55:02   it is to be good and whatever and and [TS]

00:55:05   the thing that's really interesting [TS]

00:55:06   about Charlie Brown Christmas is the [TS]

00:55:08   lesson there is everyone else change [TS]

00:55:10   oh he never changes really he gets a [TS]

00:55:14   little more confidence but its line is [TS]

00:55:17   saying it's okay Charlie Brown you're [TS]

00:55:19   right we've all lost sight of this [TS]

00:55:22   you're the one who's got the ion on [TS]

00:55:24   Christmas [TS]

00:55:25   that's a really interesting thing and [TS]

00:55:27   that's very inclusive to everybody in [TS]

00:55:28   the audience right because we sort of [TS]

00:55:31   you know we're all watching the [TS]

00:55:33   commercials for target and setting up [TS]

00:55:34   our house and doing all the things but [TS]

00:55:36   we still kind of identified with Charlie [TS]

00:55:38   Brown and then it's at the end where [TS]

00:55:39   Linus calls everybody announces yeah [TS]

00:55:42   that's all extra stuff here's here's the [TS]

00:55:45   deal i do love the bit where he goes [TS]

00:55:46   outside and he looks up at the stars and [TS]

00:55:48   a rehears Linus's little sweet yeah and [TS]

00:55:51   he just has that happy little smile on [TS]

00:55:52   his face it's like I know what brief [TS]

00:55:54   moment of of joy in Charlie Brown's [TS]

00:55:57   awful awful life you know it's yours [TS]

00:56:01   everybody still hates you and you're [TS]

00:56:02   still bald and you have that one [TS]

00:56:04   distressing piece of hair but you're not [TS]

00:56:07   going to house so it's all right and [TS]

00:56:09   there's a wonderful moment where you [TS]

00:56:10   know that he takes the the ornament and [TS]

00:56:12   puts it on the tree and it collapses and [TS]

00:56:14   he goes right back to it's like oh I [TS]

00:56:16   killed it and that's when everybody else [TS]

00:56:18   has figured out what Linus was saying [TS]

00:56:21   and they come together and they want to [TS]

00:56:23   translate very sweet you know and so [TS]

00:56:25   great yeah the Grinch has a song or [TS]

00:56:27   everybody sings everybody's happy at the [TS]

00:56:29   end of this one actually has a point [TS]

00:56:31   so that's why I that's what Charlie [TS]

00:56:33   Brown's Christmas is all about Charlie [TS]

00:56:36   Brown Charlie better [TS]

00:56:37   well I we were in shocking agreement [TS]

00:56:39   here that's good because you know it [TS]

00:56:41   wouldn't be the holidays if we didn't [TS]

00:56:43   gather around the table and not argue [TS]

00:56:44   Christmas miracle I know Jewish and [TS]

00:56:47   vegetables while the Jewish cartoon [TS]

00:56:49   specials where the Jewish girl turns but [TS]

00:56:51   grats come on crazy nights Glenn come on [TS]

00:56:53   grunts hey hebrew hammer a more general [TS]

00:56:57   a non-denominational question why have [TS]

00:57:00   they failed to come up with a more [TS]

00:57:02   classics like this since roughly around [TS]

00:57:04   90 years of the other reindeer and was [TS]

00:57:07   trying to do this and it actually is [TS]

00:57:08   kind of fun and parts but I don't think [TS]

00:57:10   it started [TS]

00:57:10   it's a little bit too much Jason but [TS]

00:57:12   it's too long trying too hard to it's [TS]

00:57:15   too commercial [TS]

00:57:16   dammit yes it's about the commercialism [TS]

00:57:18   I was wondering cuz i don't watch TV so [TS]

00:57:21   so what are the kids watching nowadays [TS]

00:57:23   are there new well they still they still [TS]

00:57:26   rerun these occasionally there are new [TS]

00:57:28   specials made and they were in the [TS]

00:57:29   seventies there was a raft of new [TS]

00:57:31   specials some of which are okay most of [TS]

00:57:34   which are our kind of like diminishing [TS]

00:57:35   returns like the rankin/bass I mean abs [TS]

00:57:38   baby did they did the year without a [TS]

00:57:39   santa clauses to the grande and then [TS]

00:57:41   they did yes it's the new years one with [TS]

00:57:43   the New Year's baby which is just just [TS]

00:57:45   ridiculous [TS]

00:57:46   and-and-and you believe it or not there [TS]

00:57:48   is an arbor day Charlie Brown cartoon [TS]

00:57:51   there is of course [TS]

00:57:53   yeah so it kind of got it I got really [TS]

00:57:55   flowers on his pitcher's mound is [TS]

00:57:57   everything all however you know in a ray [TS]

00:57:59   of a brightness of holiday specials in [TS]

00:58:02   the seventies there is the star wars [TS]

00:58:03   holiday special so you should check that [TS]

00:58:05   one somewhere sorry told me not to watch [TS]

00:58:08   the that's not denominator know it was a [TS]

00:58:11   lot like watching I was totally alive [TS]

00:58:13   its non-denominational its life day is [TS]

00:58:15   just like the army so there's nothing [TS]

00:58:16   more in it Glenn you what I said I want [TS]

00:58:18   to really get into it with the the Paul [TS]

00:58:21   Lynde halloween special just stuck with [TS]

00:58:23   one or both of those make you feel [TS]

00:58:25   better about being alive [TS]

00:58:27   it's it's strange though that something [TS]

00:58:29   nothing has really captured I think the [TS]

00:58:31   zeitgeist like some of these old sixties [TS]

00:58:32   ones yeah i mean the fact that these are [TS]

00:58:34   all from the mid-sixties yeah you know [TS]

00:58:36   and part of it is probably because [TS]

00:58:38   everything is so splintered now I mean [TS]

00:58:40   back when this aired it got you know [TS]

00:58:42   like a 50 cher like half half of the tvs [TS]

00:58:46   that were on were watching it yeah you [TS]

00:58:48   had three networks and PBS and this was [TS]

00:58:49   the only time you could see it at one [TS]

00:58:51   time of year [TS]

00:58:52   that's right even like the video 89 you [TS]

00:58:54   think there's enough audience but the [TS]

00:58:56   anime animation was out of style [TS]

00:58:58   I think that's part of the innovation [TS]

00:58:59   fellows style for a period of time until [TS]

00:59:01   it got me introduced into a prime-time [TS]

00:59:03   inserted developed into a new things I [TS]

00:59:05   think there's a point which these were [TS]

00:59:06   making this kind of you almost got there [TS]

00:59:08   glad you mentioned night he made in 1989 [TS]

00:59:11   didn't you [TS]

00:59:11   of course in December 1989 the modern [TS]

00:59:15   prime-time cartoons for adults era [TS]

00:59:18   kicked off with the simpsons roasting on [TS]

00:59:21   an open fire fire first episode of the [TS]

00:59:23   simpsons which was itself a Christmas [TS]

00:59:25   special which i should say actually does [TS]

00:59:26   sort of work as a as a classic Christmas [TS]

00:59:29   show [TS]

00:59:30   yeah it is it's pretty good it's [TS]

00:59:31   heartfelt some little helper [TS]

00:59:33   oh that isn't as good as not forgotten [TS]

00:59:35   about that was the time if only the [TS]

00:59:37   simpsons were available to view in any [TS]

00:59:38   format [TS]

00:59:40   yeah whatever in the vault no no no all [TS]

00:59:43   right David about this discipline during [TS]

00:59:45   the the anticipation when there was a [TS]

00:59:47   CBS christmas special coming on back in [TS]

00:59:49   those days and there was an [TS]

00:59:50   nothing all day ya do ya do two children [TS]

00:59:54   together they do actually um horde these [TS]

00:59:57   now where they're usually only shown on [TS]

00:59:58   TV [TS]

00:59:58   TV [TS]

01:00:00   I once right you know you can watch them [TS]

01:00:01   on video anytime tunes i have the DVD of [TS]

01:00:05   Charlie Brown Christmas you don't [TS]

01:00:06   remember my parents like saying oh we're [TS]

01:00:08   all going to sit down and watch Charlie [TS]

01:00:10   Brown tonight so and and now it's like [TS]

01:00:12   well we got other stuff to do will put [TS]

01:00:13   on a DVD later [TS]

01:00:14   yeah that's right you had you had [TS]

01:00:15   several generations and then of parents [TS]

01:00:18   sitting there kids dancing i watch this [TS]

01:00:20   when I was the way you're going to love [TS]

01:00:21   this and they grew up with it and now I [TS]

01:00:24   mean yeah my kids watch it and they [TS]

01:00:26   watch it will they pull out the DVD and [TS]

01:00:29   put it on themselves em that's the best [TS]

01:00:42   part by the way where they take a breath [TS]

01:00:43   in between everything and they actually [TS]

01:00:46   animate all the kids taking a breath [TS]

01:00:48   simultaneously pop and I and I just love [TS]

01:00:50   the merry christmas charlie brown just [TS]

01:00:55   that the rhythm of that it's it's one of [TS]

01:00:57   those kind of your word phrases it's [TS]

01:00:59   just stuck in my head I love his little [TS]

01:01:01   hop when he sees the Christmas tree yes [TS]

01:01:03   yes yeah i totally understand my current [TS]

01:01:05   stuff is not is not classic but you're [TS]

01:01:07   right there is that seventies eighties [TS]

01:01:08   period that suspect yellow alright well [TS]

01:01:12   this has been enjoyable and it was fun [TS]

01:01:14   to watch these i did watch these with my [TS]

01:01:15   entire family including my children in [TS]

01:01:17   the last figure considering children's [TS]

01:01:19   party it's good i do i do well you know [TS]
