The Incomparable

269: Crazy Ivan

00:00:00   the incomparable number 269 October 2015 [TS]

00:00:11   go back everybody to the uncomfortable [TS]

00:00:13   i'm your host Jason L it is time comrade [TS]

00:00:16   to talk about john mctiernan other [TS]

00:00:19   fantastic movie we already talked about [TS]

00:00:21   die hard long time ago but he made [TS]

00:00:23   another movie that i would consider [TS]

00:00:24   classic it is nineteen nineties the hunt [TS]

00:00:28   for red october and i have three people [TS]

00:00:33   who have quoted the movie extensively to [TS]

00:00:35   me joining people on this episode [TS]

00:00:37   because you didn't even have to watch [TS]

00:00:39   the movie because it's only right I i [TS]

00:00:42   just heard your voices as we as we [TS]

00:00:44   watched it so i give us one chance in [TS]

00:00:46   three here are the three CI look what [TS]

00:00:49   I'm doing here [TS]

00:00:50   Casey list joins us for the first time [TS]

00:00:52   in the uncomfortable Casey I wouldn't [TS]

00:00:54   have done this episode without you [TS]

00:00:55   thank you so very happy thank you very [TS]

00:00:57   much i am super excited to be here and [TS]

00:01:00   if there was ever a time i was going to [TS]

00:01:02   feel confident in being in the big [TS]

00:01:04   leagues of pop culture pond cat [TS]

00:01:06   podcasting it will be about this movie [TS]

00:01:08   which i probably could quote most of [TS]

00:01:10   what we do our sneakers episode you'll [TS]

00:01:11   be back [TS]

00:01:12   I mean uh huh also hope perhaps hosting [TS]

00:01:16   that episode because he loves it so much [TS]

00:01:18   another person I would not do this [TS]

00:01:19   episode without Dan Morgan hello hello [TS]

00:01:21   it's so good to be here on this cramped [TS]

00:01:23   submarine with you gentlemen [TS]

00:01:24   m- i missed the piece of fishing is what [TS]

00:01:29   i'm saying i understand this [TS]

00:01:31   oh uh also joining us the person who has [TS]

00:01:35   said you arrogant ass you've killed us [TS]

00:01:38   to me more times than I then i can count [TS]

00:01:40   mr. Philip Michaels how well i noticed [TS]

00:01:42   that you could do the podcast without [TS]

00:01:44   babycenter to indispensable Michaels [TS]

00:01:47   weekend no no I you have all three of [TS]

00:01:49   you could and where you were all [TS]

00:01:51   mandatory guess [TS]

00:01:53   anyhow this reminds me of the heady days [TS]

00:01:54   of Sputnik and you're all done the world [TS]

00:01:59   travel dinner podcast tonight they will [TS]

00:02:02   tremble at our awkward silence [TS]

00:02:06   well done i should explain with a [TS]

00:02:11   prologue could you do it [TS]

00:02:17   it's free this movie was set during the [TS]

00:02:19   Cold War which awkward was kind of over [TS]

00:02:22   by the time the movie [TS]

00:02:23   yeah I i just want to sort of begin with [TS]

00:02:26   an opening statement now say someone [TS]

00:02:28   else's check here but arm i can take or [TS]

00:02:32   leave tom clancy books I i really find [TS]

00:02:34   them kind of kind of tree [TS]

00:02:37   I think Sean Connery doesn't really act [TS]

00:02:40   in this movie I Alec Baldwin I've never [TS]

00:02:43   really liked him either as an as an [TS]

00:02:44   actor and you mentioned the two good [TS]

00:02:49   john mctiernan movies that exist and yet [TS]

00:02:53   i love this movie more than I love air [TS]

00:02:55   haha this is one of the greatest movies [TS]

00:03:00   of my of my teenage years and indeed one [TS]

00:03:03   and that makes it one of the greatest [TS]

00:03:05   movies of all time [TS]

00:03:06   it's like a logical mhm any other any [TS]

00:03:09   other opening statements this is i would [TS]

00:03:11   like to say that that uh mymy friends [TS]

00:03:14   and I in high school used to practice [TS]

00:03:17   our Sean Connery accidents by saying a [TS]

00:03:19   line that is not even in this movie [TS]

00:03:21   which is just going around saying I'm a [TS]

00:03:22   Russian submarine that was a pick-up [TS]

00:03:27   line to use one is moving us alone [TS]

00:03:30   that's the light well yeah i feel like i [TS]

00:03:32   should pitch in and just say that [TS]

00:03:33   nothing of what you're about to hear [TS]

00:03:35   never happened it never happened but as [TS]

00:03:39   you as you're saying that the movie came [TS]

00:03:41   out in 1990 just as the Soviet Union was [TS]

00:03:43   collapsing yes the moment and at which [TS]

00:03:46   is why they added the prologue is they [TS]

00:03:48   were little Godard movie is ruined [TS]

00:03:49   pieces breaking out i remember reading i [TS]

00:03:52   think probably like an article in [TS]

00:03:54   Newsweek or something about the problem [TS]

00:03:56   that they had we're selling out cold war [TS]

00:03:58   movie in the heady days after the cold [TS]

00:04:01   air where strike is over yeah yeah and [TS]

00:04:03   the insert and there is there is [TS]

00:04:05   dialogue inserted in the movie about [TS]

00:04:07   about how perhaps this event is what [TS]

00:04:10   causes at the very end [TS]

00:04:12   rainia says a little revolution now and [TS]

00:04:14   then is a healthy thing don't you think [TS]

00:04:16   I'm not gonna do my Sean Connery that [TS]

00:04:18   oh don't worry people will people don't [TS]

00:04:21   feel that good idea [TS]

00:04:22   the nice thing about that is that were [TS]

00:04:23   so far removed from that now that you [TS]

00:04:25   can just view it as a like early [TS]

00:04:27   nineteen eighties cold war movie to a [TS]

00:04:29   certain DN indeed now it doesn't it [TS]

00:04:31   doesn't matter in fact now the prologue [TS]

00:04:32   is a little bit weird and unnecessary [TS]

00:04:34   because it's just an old movie although [TS]

00:04:36   i did but my mind boggled when i looked [TS]

00:04:38   it up on IMDb and I saw that it was [TS]

00:04:39   released in 1990 because it feels and [TS]

00:04:42   this is dr. credit it feels so [TS]

00:04:44   mid-eighties in fact it feels so the [TS]

00:04:48   movie that actually it reminds me of the [TS]

00:04:49   most is star trek to uh we just all so [TS]

00:04:53   kind of a submarine movie now and and [TS]

00:04:56   it's it's gotta you know it's got some [TS]

00:04:58   harry shouting people like like 200 but [TS]

00:05:03   it's a sub-sub chase and that the the [TS]

00:05:05   score here which is not by james horner [TS]

00:05:06   but it is it sounds so much like the [TS]

00:05:10   star trek to soundtrack and that movie [TS]

00:05:11   is from 192 yeah so it has that [TS]

00:05:15   mid-eighties feel even though it's from [TS]

00:05:16   well we can we can get to this later in [TS]

00:05:18   the episode if you want but basically [TS]

00:05:20   submarine movies or space movies and [TS]

00:05:22   space movies except yes this is true [TS]

00:05:25   well I will say that I also i went on a [TS]

00:05:27   kick I think are probably around after [TS]

00:05:29   I'd seen this movie and read in college [TS]

00:05:31   a bunch of the Tata tom clancy books I [TS]

00:05:34   think about that was a poor decision [TS]

00:05:36   yes well at the time it was you know [TS]

00:05:37   that they're thrillers right there [TS]

00:05:38   techno-thriller there they're definitely [TS]

00:05:40   page-turners got what I went along they [TS]

00:05:42   definitely got worse as they went along [TS]

00:05:44   although some he's very good at [TS]

00:05:46   maintaining that sort of like phonetic [TS]

00:05:48   totally tense element of suspense like [TS]

00:05:51   he's very mechanically solid I in [TS]

00:05:54   retrospect I think hunt for red october [TS]

00:05:56   maybe the only really good book with [TS]

00:05:58   Vicki ever wrote but it is a very good [TS]

00:06:00   book i think a and they do a great job [TS]

00:06:02   of adapting it to a film hear that that [TS]

00:06:04   really works you know sometimes you get [TS]

00:06:06   lucky and it's like the combination of [TS]

00:06:08   and it's not that there isn't Alan but [TS]

00:06:10   it sometimes town all the time in the [TS]

00:06:11   world won't get you a good movie but [TS]

00:06:12   it's like the source material and the [TS]

00:06:14   way it was adapted and the the way was [TS]

00:06:17   directed and the performances in a movie [TS]

00:06:19   and the music and the special effects it [TS]

00:06:21   just all comes together so yeah this is [TS]

00:06:24   going to be a love fest and that is why [TS]

00:06:26   we are here because this is such a cool [TS]

00:06:27   movie so there's a prologue explains [TS]

00:06:30   that this happened in the cold war [TS]

00:06:32   and that it never happened some people [TS]

00:06:34   will tell you it never happened never [TS]

00:06:35   happened during the cold or did it [TS]

00:06:37   already to him and so we we start with [TS]

00:06:42   I'm just going to kind of walk through [TS]

00:06:43   it and stop me when I go ahead and start [TS]

00:06:45   we start with sean connery as Marko [TS]

00:06:48   Ramius who is it's actually this is a a [TS]

00:06:52   tidbit that tom clancy I i really like [TS]

00:06:54   this because in in hindsight it is that [TS]

00:06:56   much stronger of other thing which is he [TS]

00:06:59   is lithuanian yes and uh and in the [TS]

00:07:03   movie jack ryan says he's not a Russian [TS]

00:07:06   he's a Lithuanian life it like it's like [TS]

00:07:08   a little thing that most Americans [TS]

00:07:10   wouldn't even think they're all Soviet [TS]

00:07:11   but to him it's like he he's not Russian [TS]

00:07:14   the Lithuanian were kind of invaded and [TS]

00:07:16   subjugated and of course now lithuania [TS]

00:07:18   and the rest of the Baltic countries are [TS]

00:07:20   free from the they were the first ones [TS]

00:07:23   to declare their independence from the [TS]

00:07:24   soviet union so it's a nice little [TS]

00:07:25   tidbit and he's there at the at their uh [TS]

00:07:27   he's about to take off in his in his [TS]

00:07:30   submarine for this mission it is time [TS]

00:07:32   comrade and that is the first thing we [TS]

00:07:34   see in the movie is is the the submarine [TS]

00:07:37   and that they give ya him and Sam Neill [TS]

00:07:39   who is executive officer [TS]

00:07:41   yes the somali yes I i would like to [TS]

00:07:44   make a comment about the opening title [TS]

00:07:46   the title card which appears briefly in [TS]

00:07:49   Russian and before sort of washing into [TS]

00:07:51   english they spell October totally that [TS]

00:07:54   is not russian company is correct but [TS]

00:07:57   activists spelled incorrectly like they [TS]

00:08:00   don't they and I looked this up to [TS]

00:08:01   double-check it was curious if it was [TS]

00:08:03   another so that another Slavic language [TS]

00:08:05   basically that they were sort of mixing [TS]

00:08:07   and matching and I found a couple [TS]

00:08:08   references nope they hit it spelled it [TS]

00:08:10   in a way that made it look more [TS]

00:08:12   anglicized for some reason so yes that's [TS]

00:08:15   redstart good enough that's enough [TS]

00:08:18   several letters aren't even certain that [TS]

00:08:20   they have an eye in there there's no [TS]

00:08:21   idea what my understanding from people [TS]

00:08:23   who know Russian is that the Russian in [TS]

00:08:25   this movie is terrible just yes some [TS]

00:08:27   people have better access than others in [TS]

00:08:29   the movie Connery's is terrible as you [TS]

00:08:32   know i'll cover some people try and some [TS]

00:08:34   people are Sean Connery yes we then cut [TS]

00:08:38   to its London and young young young [TS]

00:08:41   higher voiced at night not quite whiskey [TS]

00:08:44   voice yet al [TS]

00:08:45   Baldwin is you know Alec Baldwin is [TS]

00:08:48   leaving for a flight and he says goodbye [TS]

00:08:49   to his wife who is dr. crusher [TS]

00:08:52   yes our dragnet dinner without with a [TS]

00:08:54   totally weird British accent since that [TS]

00:08:56   character is not British in any of the [TS]

00:08:58   books and ironically my family an archer [TS]

00:09:01   in this subsequently and then becomes [TS]

00:09:03   keira knightley who is British and is [TS]

00:09:04   forced to do an American accent what the [TS]

00:09:07   hell anyone anything like it's shorthand [TS]

00:09:09   to say well this is this will help with [TS]

00:09:10   the geography of explaining that he's [TS]

00:09:11   flying from London private its it gets [TS]

00:09:14   out of a black cab and the next it's [TS]

00:09:16   also not entirely clear even watching it [TS]

00:09:18   that you know she could be the nanny [TS]

00:09:20   practically like it's not a lot of her [TS]

00:09:23   she had some more scenes and they got [TS]

00:09:25   cut up our eyes what is what i've i've [TS]

00:09:27   read but this was this was monumental [TS]

00:09:29   for me though because at the time when I [TS]

00:09:31   saw this I was a big next generation [TS]

00:09:33   family and so I was deal predisposed [TS]

00:09:35   from the moment I saw dr. crusher for [TS]

00:09:37   all of five seconds to really enjoy this [TS]

00:09:40   movie and from here on out I really [TS]

00:09:42   enjoyed and continue to enjoy this [TS]

00:09:45   moment but it's the doctor crusher [TS]

00:09:46   guarantee once you get that you're in [TS]

00:09:48   there although i will point out that [TS]

00:09:49   yeah I think all of the women to have [TS]

00:09:51   lines in this movie pretty much are in [TS]

00:09:54   the first like yeah minutes and that i [TS]

00:09:56   was watching this with my wife and my [TS]

00:09:58   wife says boy this movie really fails [TS]

00:10:00   the bechdel test [TS]

00:10:01   oh yeah yeah well I mean at someone like [TS]

00:10:05   scenes on the submarines understands all [TS]

00:10:07   male fleet I get that but yes it fails [TS]

00:10:09   and all the other in all the other [TS]

00:10:10   places uh but then we move on he's in [TS]

00:10:13   Washington DC he's so young and he's [TS]

00:10:15   visiting with the Admiral James Earl [TS]

00:10:17   Jones i love seeing James Earl Jones the [TS]

00:10:19   this is a nice a period for him where we [TS]

00:10:22   got him in this and in the field of [TS]

00:10:24   dreams a couple years later and sneakers [TS]

00:10:26   sneakers from him [TS]

00:10:27   naturally I feel that dreams predated [TS]

00:10:29   this by a year [TS]

00:10:31   tell you right well i thought i saw in [TS]

00:10:32   college so yeah I was the year before [TS]

00:10:34   okay yeah i have a good party together [TS]

00:10:36   this or this was the this was the this [TS]

00:10:39   was the golden era of james earl jones [TS]

00:10:41   when he had to make the really crummy [TS]

00:10:44   movies like city limits in the early [TS]

00:10:45   eighties and then he suddenly became [TS]

00:10:47   this you've got a really authoritative [TS]

00:10:50   hello he's get our theater for our movie [TS]

00:10:52   yeah let's put you in the movie and [TS]

00:10:54   young people will go home wow this is a [TS]

00:10:56   classy movie [TS]

00:10:57   yeah I think equally does I mean this [TS]

00:10:59   movie doesn't necessarily need to be [TS]

00:11:01   classed up although this point it's [TS]

00:11:02   early in the in the film but he brings [TS]

00:11:04   that really really nice kind of he's got [TS]

00:11:06   the gravitas like you got to take this [TS]

00:11:07   guy seriously but also comes across as [TS]

00:11:09   like you know a mentor and a good guy [TS]

00:11:11   like he's he's a he's a solid guy is a [TS]

00:11:14   right leg [TS]

00:11:14   yeah and he and he he's got the you know [TS]

00:11:17   he's got to talk to to Jack Ryan about [TS]

00:11:20   what was going on with the submarines [TS]

00:11:22   what Britain I don't know anything that [TS]

00:11:24   can get your information in the middle [TS]

00:11:25   of the night and then and it's a nice [TS]

00:11:27   just so your net because we don't know [TS]

00:11:29   because we don't know right so we don't [TS]

00:11:31   know why this is happening in fact i [TS]

00:11:33   think you could probably guess that he's [TS]

00:11:34   been summoned right then we get there [TS]

00:11:36   and it turns out he hasn't been summoned [TS]

00:11:37   he noticed something and hopped on a [TS]

00:11:39   plane which tells you a lot i think [TS]

00:11:41   about Jack Ryan who also got the error [TS]

00:11:43   right like he couldn't just like pop off [TS]

00:11:44   an email it's not really about the way [TS]

00:11:47   well it is secret like super top-secret [TS]

00:11:49   III give him some latitude like in in [TS]

00:11:52   this service perhaps what you can do it [TS]

00:11:55   in person [TS]

00:11:55   one of the things I love about the early [TS]

00:11:58   technology you know cold war thriller [TS]

00:12:00   era is that it is so low-tech in many [TS]

00:12:03   ways right like even though we're [TS]

00:12:04   talking about hugely technical like [TS]

00:12:05   giant submarine warfare machines the [TS]

00:12:08   fact that so much stuff has to be done [TS]

00:12:09   in person the computers don't really do [TS]

00:12:11   everything it lends just sort of it [TS]

00:12:14   maybe certain as the amount of nostalgia [TS]

00:12:16   to it I really busy today this this is [TS]

00:12:19   legal conference call on screens and [TS]

00:12:21   everyone is is weighing in and and here [TS]

00:12:23   it's him flying across across the [TS]

00:12:25   Atlantic with a couple of grainy [TS]

00:12:27   black-and-white photos that despite yeah [TS]

00:12:28   I was just about to say that these [TS]

00:12:30   pictures are so crappy which is [TS]

00:12:32   understandable because this by took them [TS]

00:12:33   like you said but they're so crappy that [TS]

00:12:35   you probably could fax these damn things [TS]

00:12:36   anyone was very much fidelity at all but [TS]

00:12:40   yeah so he gets on this point to show to [TS]

00:12:43   shadow Greer that there's something up [TS]

00:12:45   with this new Russian some yeah I'm [TS]

00:12:47   later is talking about photos one of my [TS]

00:12:49   favorite bits and I remember this when [TS]

00:12:51   the last time I thought which is [TS]

00:12:52   probably about five or ten years ago [TS]

00:12:53   when my favorite bits is when he's in [TS]

00:12:55   the briefing room scene we're going to [TS]

00:12:57   serve rabies I got a picture frame us [TS]

00:12:59   and it's like a picture of this whole [TS]

00:13:00   group of people and we're back there's [TS]

00:13:02   this little circle around Sean Connery's [TS]

00:13:04   and i love it because that feels real to [TS]

00:13:07   me like we this is the only picture we [TS]

00:13:09   have [TS]

00:13:10   this is like watching the people who [TS]

00:13:12   line up in the in the balconies during [TS]

00:13:15   the parades and doing actual Kremlin [TS]

00:13:17   ology this is this is what that is and [TS]

00:13:19   it so it totally works is we got his [TS]

00:13:21   craft and you're like what we've got his [TS]

00:13:23   facebook page yeah mp3 sequences DNA and [TS]

00:13:27   i love that like really like Waldo's [TS]

00:13:28   right next to a military is yep that's [TS]

00:13:31   correct although noted communist wearing [TS]

00:13:35   red [TS]

00:13:36   yeah cut to the USS Dallas sonar guys [TS]

00:13:41   are talking about sonar Jonesy Courtney [TS]

00:13:44   I lot more DB Vance involves you know [TS]

00:13:46   one of my coordinate be awesome [TS]

00:13:48   it's more like it so true he's so [TS]

00:13:50   delightful in the movie and in the crux [TS]

00:13:52   is that we find out that the Red October [TS]

00:13:55   is just launched and this escalates Alec [TS]

00:13:58   Baldwin's already urgency into a holy [TS]

00:14:01   realm and so where were in the sonar [TS]

00:14:03   room with Jonesy and he's tutoring his [TS]

00:14:06   protégé whose name I don't even [TS]

00:14:08   Stephen Beaumont yes thank you [TS]

00:14:11   and so he's trying to teach human bone [TS]

00:14:13   mount about sonar and makes a good joke [TS]

00:14:15   about how Stephen Beaumont ends up [TS]

00:14:17   discovering a whale who knows a hell of [TS]

00:14:19   a lot about some more about helped a lot [TS]

00:14:21   more about sonar than you do and it's [TS]

00:14:23   nice job it sets the scene of sort of [TS]

00:14:25   you know where we're going to be [TS]

00:14:26   spending a lot of this movie it throws a [TS]

00:14:28   lot of jargon at you but it also does a [TS]

00:14:30   good job of sort of translating the [TS]

00:14:32   things that you highlighting the things [TS]

00:14:34   you need to know and then sonar will be [TS]

00:14:37   important to move right exactly but they [TS]

00:14:39   usually go through a bunch of acronyms [TS]

00:14:40   they talk about like use technical terms [TS]

00:14:42   but they do both the translation and [TS]

00:14:43   they also just it immerses you without [TS]

00:14:45   necessarily making you feel like okay I [TS]

00:14:47   need to know every single detail if [TS]

00:14:48   you're if you're a screenwriting geeker [TS]

00:14:50   writing geek this is really a good movie [TS]

00:14:52   that that that that this movie really [TS]

00:14:55   handles exposition well because it could [TS]

00:14:58   have been very Legend and then obvious [TS]

00:15:00   and instead its depth and and advances [TS]

00:15:04   the story is speaking of screenwriting [TS]

00:15:06   the chief of the boat now [TS]

00:15:09   he apparently was a screenwriter which I [TS]

00:15:11   did not know until I do wow yeah i saw [TS]

00:15:13   that so let's change the world is a [TS]

00:15:15   screenwriter Larry Ferguson apparently [TS]

00:15:17   was a screenwriter as well and i thought [TS]

00:15:18   it was a fine actor [TS]

00:15:20   like I never in a million years would [TS]

00:15:21   have guessed that his real job is [TS]

00:15:23   screenwriting he's kind of a jerk to [TS]

00:15:25   Jonesy and he pulls it off well with a [TS]

00:15:27   time arguing about the Paganini [TS]

00:15:28   versatile Verratti right which I enjoy [TS]

00:15:32   that's a good line no no Pavarotti's the [TS]

00:15:34   singer packaging is a composer get it [TS]

00:15:35   right this is also good because and and [TS]

00:15:37   this goes back to what i was saying [TS]

00:15:38   about Admiral Greer that the one guy [TS]

00:15:41   could be better who is working with [TS]

00:15:43   Jones could be portrayed as an idiot or [TS]

00:15:44   Jones it could be portrayed as being a [TS]

00:15:46   jerk and that's not you get [TS]

00:15:48   professionalism from these guys right [TS]

00:15:50   they are they are professionals they are [TS]

00:15:51   they are in this submarine they are you [TS]

00:15:54   know X you know one of them is an expert [TS]

00:15:56   at his job in the other one is learning [TS]

00:15:58   and so you get the exposition but you [TS]

00:16:00   also get this tone of like these guys [TS]

00:16:01   are not are not Joker's they the these [TS]

00:16:04   are people series people who want to do [TS]

00:16:06   good and want to do a good job [TS]

00:16:07   also I always love the fact that there's [TS]

00:16:09   a roll of toilet paper hanging from a [TS]

00:16:11   thing to wipe wipe the screen off [TS]

00:16:13   because I think they use it for that [TS]

00:16:15   later which kind of makes sense but it [TS]

00:16:16   is first several times I saw this movie [TS]

00:16:18   like they not let them go to the [TS]

00:16:20   bathroom but you have to stay just a [TS]

00:16:22   picture when it as it turns out later on [TS]

00:16:24   we hear that Jonesy refuses to leave the [TS]

00:16:27   sonar room for three important reasons [TS]

00:16:28   that will come upon a moment but you [TS]

00:16:30   know it very well could be that the [TS]

00:16:32   toilet paper that was intended for the [TS]

00:16:33   screen did serve a dual purpose as a [TS]

00:16:36   turndown let's take a brief break [TS]

00:18:06   calm and thank you 23andme for being [TS]

00:18:08   back as a sponsor of the uncomfortable [TS]

00:18:11   shall we talk about the Red October and [TS]

00:18:13   why it needs to be hunted [TS]

00:18:15   I think I think perhaps it and I think [TS]

00:18:17   we've reached that way my only note but [TS]

00:18:19   before we get there is that [TS]

00:18:20   hey Scott Glenn is the captain a lot of1 [TS]

00:18:23   and he has gigantic glasses and I was [TS]

00:18:26   mildly time because so eighties Scotland [TS]

00:18:29   is fantastic and this I just say like [TS]

00:18:31   when I saw him most recently I thinking [TS]

00:18:33   he's in the daredevil show he plays [TS]

00:18:35   stick [TS]

00:18:37   oh yeah Matt Murdock's mentor friend [TS]

00:18:39   he's all he's still awesome [TS]

00:18:41   oh yeah he's great he is movie helper [TS]

00:18:43   you just put him in a movie as dirt is [TS]

00:18:46   better [TS]

00:18:47   ok we moved to the Red October and we [TS]

00:18:49   have we have lots of stuff that happens [TS]

00:18:51   in the Red October including famously a [TS]

00:18:54   switch from russian to english which i [TS]

00:18:58   think is it's interesting I i like it i [TS]

00:19:01   think it's a very deft way they handle [TS]

00:19:03   it which is that the brainiest comes [TS]

00:19:05   into his his a his room and the [TS]

00:19:08   political officer the spy basically for [TS]

00:19:10   this named Putin hmm also play by peter [TS]

00:19:14   firth who then goes on into a long [TS]

00:19:16   career of playing Harry the chief spy on [TS]

00:19:19   the m the british show spooks which ran [TS]

00:19:22   for like 10 or 11 years so he's yeah [TS]

00:19:24   good old girl hairy so he's reading [TS]

00:19:26   through the books and in one of the [TS]

00:19:27   books is reading through the Bible and [TS]

00:19:29   and highlighted passages including about [TS]

00:19:32   Armageddon which is part of the theme of [TS]

00:19:33   this movie right because this is that [TS]

00:19:34   this is the sub that could bring about [TS]

00:19:36   the end of the world and of course at as [TS]

00:19:38   he's reading the camera zooms into the [TS]

00:19:40   Bible and he reads the word Armageddon [TS]

00:19:42   and then as we pull immediately the [TS]

00:19:44   camera zooms back out and [TS]

00:19:46   reading in English and now we don't need [TS]

00:19:47   to listen to English and Scottish and [TS]

00:19:51   American actors doing fake Russian well [TS]

00:19:53   not all of them do fake Russian accent [TS]

00:19:54   some of them still do but they're all [TS]

00:19:56   speaking English at this point although [TS]

00:19:57   it is it is a hodgepodge of different [TS]

00:19:59   nationalities all on on like there's an [TS]

00:20:02   American on the Red October there's you [TS]

00:20:04   know a couple of breaks it's very it's [TS]

00:20:06   very all over the place it is the Tower [TS]

00:20:08   of Babel summer yeah there's not a lot [TS]

00:20:10   of still fake Russian accent I just [TS]

00:20:12   figured the Lithuanian accent translates [TS]

00:20:14   by the TARDIS translation circuits that [TS]

00:20:15   comes across the Scottish that makes [TS]

00:20:17   perfect [TS]

00:20:18   the funny thing about this was the one [TS]

00:20:20   of the first ones to watch this and [TS]

00:20:21   watch it with my dad and he was a big [TS]

00:20:23   fan of the movie from like the 60 [TS]

00:20:25   judgment at Nuremberg and he said to me [TS]

00:20:27   and I believe my eyes have seen that [TS]

00:20:29   movie wants forever ago that this zoom [TS]

00:20:32   into the mouth to switch languages that [TS]

00:20:35   was actually pulled from judgment at [TS]

00:20:37   nuremberg that's rest is that another [TS]

00:20:40   variation of it yeah incision i agree [TS]

00:20:43   though is a very clever very clean way [TS]

00:20:45   to say without being cheesy about it [TS]

00:20:47   listen we're just going to all agree to [TS]

00:20:49   talk in English from now on i also like [TS]

00:20:51   that there's a UH there's a nice [TS]

00:20:53   contrast between the submarines here a [TS]

00:20:55   lot of the on the Russian submarine a [TS]

00:20:57   lot of bustling activity it's like a [TS]

00:20:58   hive everybody's running around [TS]

00:21:00   whereas on the American submarine people [TS]

00:21:02   just started chill you know that there's [TS]

00:21:04   different lighting there's different set [TS]

00:21:05   design and so given that we're gonna [TS]

00:21:07   spend this so much money in the movie in [TS]

00:21:09   these two submarines they do a nice job [TS]

00:21:11   of setting them apart in a way that [TS]

00:21:13   they're instantly recognizable so Ramos [TS]

00:21:16   has gotten his orders he and the [TS]

00:21:17   political officer going to are going to [TS]

00:21:19   get them out and then he's gonna take [TS]

00:21:21   this everything will be fine a secret [TS]

00:21:22   silent sub that's got a special dr [TS]

00:21:24   called the caterpillar which is not [TS]

00:21:27   audible on sonar or so they think [TS]

00:21:29   and they're gonna take it out for a test [TS]

00:21:31   ride and and the political officers so [TS]

00:21:34   excited about this that he wants to [TS]

00:21:37   announce the orders to the to the the [TS]

00:21:39   the crew which radius agrees to and as [TS]

00:21:42   the political officer turns to walk out [TS]

00:21:43   the door Ramos grabs him slams his head [TS]

00:21:46   onto the table kills him and says where [TS]

00:21:48   I'm going you can't follow i [TS]

00:21:50   accidentally paused on poor Peter first [TS]

00:21:53   have space which is not specifically [TS]

00:21:56   so yeah that's an awkward death see it [TS]

00:22:00   really is for yes [TS]

00:22:03   dying is easy comedy is hard not if you [TS]

00:22:05   peter firth of this myth dying is quite [TS]

00:22:08   difficult so I have an important [TS]

00:22:10   question so i know that Jason and dan [TS]

00:22:12   you're both developed tea drinkers did [TS]

00:22:14   this did this scene really affect you [TS]

00:22:16   negatively did that really I just [TS]

00:22:18   warranty i enjoy the tea the tea [TS]

00:22:21   presence in this movie because the it's [TS]

00:22:23   to make use of drinks tea too [TS]

00:22:24   yeah or he's just get yourself some [TS]

00:22:26   coffee and bring me some tea so it's [TS]

00:22:27   like there's a tea magenta happening [TS]

00:22:29   well in and Russia baby was monitored by [TS]

00:22:32   big t bt yea the novelty in in Russia [TS]

00:22:36   they drink tea correctly on the on the [TS]

00:22:38   submarines although a little [TS]

00:22:39   precariously everything for us which is [TS]

00:22:41   the glasses [TS]

00:22:42   those are those are sort of traditional [TS]

00:22:44   russian tea drinking glasses and t is [TS]

00:22:47   certainly at least at this point [TS]

00:22:48   probably much more common in Russia than [TS]

00:22:49   coffee [TS]

00:22:50   it's a common thing for people to slip [TS]

00:22:51   on TV and die too so you know it's not [TS]

00:22:54   raining submarines are dangerous okay [TS]

00:22:55   yeah let's let's talk a little bit about [TS]

00:22:58   ships doctor Frank encoder Tim Curry [TS]

00:23:04   never really interested in is the doctor [TS]

00:23:06   which is the worst talk to her [TS]

00:23:08   it goes everything always look got some [TS]

00:23:11   tea that seems alright to me [TS]

00:23:13   well it is silvia Union you're the [TS]

00:23:14   captain I like that he also does try to [TS]

00:23:17   he's our explication vehicle for why [TS]

00:23:21   someone shouldn't have two missile keys [TS]

00:23:23   and it sort of halting leaders sure i [TS]

00:23:27   mean i could hold onto a key if you want [TS]

00:23:30   yeah but that is brilliantly shutdown [TS]

00:23:32   writers like nope I'm gonna do it and I [TS]

00:23:34   i will learn team curry I'll do you a [TS]

00:23:37   favor in that report that you gave me [TS]

00:23:39   some lip [TS]

00:23:40   yeah for which your doctor only wanted [TS]

00:23:41   was a BFF even just one and you know I [TS]

00:23:44   think this is a great again sort of [TS]

00:23:46   great plotting for how Ramos is going to [TS]

00:23:49   pull this off because you know as we are [TS]

00:23:51   sort of learning you know his his plan [TS]

00:23:54   as it goes along a lot of it relies on [TS]

00:23:55   things like the immense secrecy of what [TS]

00:23:57   they're doing the fact that he has sort [TS]

00:23:59   of absolute power now especially with [TS]

00:24:01   the political officer out of the way but [TS]

00:24:03   he is sort of still writing that knife's [TS]

00:24:05   edge and that does come back to bite him [TS]

00:24:08   as we find out in this very scene [TS]

00:24:09   there's an [TS]

00:24:10   I set up with the guy they calls over to [TS]

00:24:12   have him witness taking the key is the a [TS]

00:24:16   cook's assistant [TS]

00:24:18   hmm maybe who may be important later on [TS]

00:24:20   her lingers on him featured so [TS]

00:24:23   prominently in the strattice is nothing [TS]

00:24:25   interesting you know it's funny you guys [TS]

00:24:27   bring that up because i was rewatching [TS]

00:24:28   this earlier tonight I I feel like there [TS]

00:24:31   is an awful lot of once you've seen that [TS]

00:24:34   movie at least once really heavy [TS]

00:24:36   foreshadows is heavier than you normally [TS]

00:24:38   find any i thought about you know the [TS]

00:24:40   turbulence in the plane at the beginning [TS]

00:24:42   that comes out it's not a big plot [TS]

00:24:44   device but it comes up later we we are [TS]

00:24:46   actually we skip the scene where he goes [TS]

00:24:49   to see the DSRV getting installed that [TS]

00:24:52   becomes relevant later something that I [TS]

00:24:54   keep that I wrote down that I can't read [TS]

00:24:56   my own handwriting and we're not reading [TS]

00:24:59   your own handwriting comes into play yes [TS]

00:25:01   it's very boring nothing but I really [TS]

00:25:03   cooks assistant loco Logan officer that [TS]

00:25:05   becomes important when you watch it you [TS]

00:25:08   don't realize that they're setting all [TS]

00:25:09   that up and i think that's the good [TS]

00:25:10   thing is it seems organic that this is [TS]

00:25:12   all happening but it's alright only pays [TS]

00:25:13   off [TS]

00:25:14   i would say although it seems Telegraph [TS]

00:25:16   I think um there are enough red herrings [TS]

00:25:19   to keep you guessing like there's the [TS]

00:25:20   guy who is always smoking a cigarette [TS]

00:25:23   and staring at you with crazy eyes [TS]

00:25:26   the engineer yeah right and I favorite [TS]

00:25:28   guy don't trust that i right i don't [TS]

00:25:30   trust that guy either right because he [TS]

00:25:32   seems like why is he so weird and why do [TS]

00:25:34   we linger on him all the time and he's [TS]

00:25:36   not the the the more wetland but but [TS]

00:25:39   right i mean the end tim curry again I'm [TS]

00:25:42   just naturally suspicious of tim curry [TS]

00:25:44   so you know that could that kept me a [TS]

00:25:47   little bit off the edges and they're [TS]

00:25:49   trying to throw it away from the cook [TS]

00:25:51   system if I have to criticisms of this [TS]

00:25:53   movie it's it's to casting decisions [TS]

00:25:55   when we'll get to later and the other is [TS]

00:25:57   tim curry I'd every time to Korea [TS]

00:26:00   appears he takes me right the hell out [TS]

00:26:02   of the movie and that's probably just be [TS]

00:26:05   though you know Cee and I never got that [TS]

00:26:07   because i never saw any of the millions [TS]

00:26:10   of other movies Tim Curry has been in [TS]

00:26:11   until well after I saw the know imagine [TS]

00:26:14   me trying to watch rocky horror [TS]

00:26:18   thinking what the hell is going on right [TS]

00:26:21   now what is the doctor what is the [TS]

00:26:23   doctor in Doctor doing [TS]

00:26:24   indeed captain alright so I'm so murder [TS]

00:26:28   political officer where I'm going you [TS]

00:26:30   can't follow he says there is that scene [TS]

00:26:32   where Jack Ryan goes to the his his [TS]

00:26:33   friend at the shop shipbuilding thing [TS]

00:26:35   and and Jeffrey Jones get from ferris [TS]

00:26:37   bueller's day off and he gets the to do [TS]

00:26:39   a little exposition as well about how [TS]

00:26:41   this is the silent drive the caterpillar [TS]

00:26:43   and that its we tried to make it work [TS]

00:26:45   when we couldn't even make it work and [TS]

00:26:46   if they didn't make it work [TS]

00:26:47   they can basically blow up New York and [TS]

00:26:49   Washington before you have the bottom [TS]

00:26:50   line is it's a first strike with ya and [TS]

00:26:52   this could be the end of the world [TS]

00:26:53   because this is the shit tipping the [TS]

00:26:55   balance of power and that's when we we [TS]

00:26:57   we learned that Sean Connery is defined [TS]

00:26:59   the orders and going to sail to to the [TS]

00:27:03   the American co-star we sail into [TS]

00:27:05   history comrades engage the silent drive [TS]

00:27:07   and then when the right day contracts [TS]

00:27:09   with shaylen check your partner shelf of [TS]

00:27:12   the biggest city and listen to that rock [TS]

00:27:14   more rock and roll ocean that's good [TS]

00:27:17   what we true but it's all with the best [TS]

00:27:19   part of that is it's it's a whole line [TS]

00:27:21   of BS rightly feeding them what they [TS]

00:27:23   wanted with what I know but we don't [TS]

00:27:24   know that yet we know we don't we don't [TS]

00:27:27   know this is a nice thing that happens [TS]

00:27:28   is that he could he plays the crew he [TS]

00:27:30   knows what to say to a to a Soviet crew [TS]

00:27:32   to have them be excited to the point [TS]

00:27:33   where even after they get them off in [TS]

00:27:35   the mo their little wraps and they're [TS]

00:27:36   going to be picked up by the Americans [TS]

00:27:38   they're still looking for him ya know [TS]

00:27:40   it's brilliant sit watching it again for [TS]

00:27:42   the vantage point of having seen it [TS]

00:27:43   before you know obviously there's a lot [TS]

00:27:45   I feel like there's even more to [TS]

00:27:47   appreciate in some of the way this is [TS]

00:27:49   constructed because it is it is it works [TS]

00:27:52   both on having never seen it before [TS]

00:27:54   trying to piece out what's going on as [TS]

00:27:56   well as sort of appreciating a look at [TS]

00:27:58   the way he's he is playing the crew or [TS]

00:28:00   look at the way that he's taking [TS]

00:28:02   advantage of all these ingredients also [TS]

00:28:04   this is the point where they they start [TS]

00:28:07   to sing the Soviet national anthem boy [TS]

00:28:09   is that a long national get a simple [TS]

00:28:11   person national anthem but it allows the [TS]

00:28:13   as they engage the silent drive but it [TS]

00:28:15   allows our amid lots of music and [TS]

00:28:18   effects shots and all of this the the [TS]

00:28:20   USS Dallas has been has been trying to [TS]

00:28:22   follow them and the Red October go [TS]

00:28:25   silent but there's a great line that i [TS]

00:28:27   really liked was like I thought I heard [TS]

00:28:29   singing sir just for a second just [TS]

00:28:31   the second like I'm going maybe going [TS]

00:28:33   crazy but it's like this submarine [TS]

00:28:35   vanished and all that was left was [TS]

00:28:37   people singing the Russian national [TS]

00:28:39   anthem so fun fact in the early days of [TS]

00:28:41   the iphone when you could use it to as [TS]

00:28:46   an alarm clock did and it would just [TS]

00:28:47   play whatever music was in your library [TS]

00:28:49   i used to use the Russian national [TS]

00:28:51   anthem is my wake up song because that [TS]

00:28:53   will get you right the hell out of it [TS]

00:28:55   and it and i'm from a communist state [TS]

00:28:59   yeah well Phil and I have had this [TS]

00:29:00   discussion that if he was a major league [TS]

00:29:02   baseball player has walk-up music would [TS]

00:29:03   be the Soviet national and home [TS]

00:29:05   how could you not because no one uses it [TS]

00:29:08   an hour [TS]

00:29:09   no well I think they rewrote the lyrics [TS]

00:29:10   and it is now the russian LOL but and [TS]

00:29:13   then i have to go when the International [TS]

00:29:15   so I I this is at the point where where [TS]

00:29:19   I pointed out that every subtitle that [TS]

00:29:20   happens in this movie not that not the [TS]

00:29:22   translation subtitles but like the super [TS]

00:29:24   titles of where we are [TS]

00:29:25   has that sound effect that doesn't [TS]

00:29:27   printing on expires or something yeah [TS]

00:29:30   that is it that I feel like that that is [TS]

00:29:34   then pay you then became a troop I know [TS]

00:29:35   if it was a troll private was not a drop [TS]

00:29:37   at the time this was 1988 most [TS]

00:29:39   cutting-edge to yeah so so we kept the [TS]

00:29:43   Kremlin I gotta a general who we find [TS]

00:29:46   out is is radius is a father-in-law [TS]

00:29:48   because we're using wife had died a year [TS]

00:29:50   a year before four do with one scene i [TS]

00:29:52   love this guy [TS]

00:29:53   yeah yeah yeah good morning that role [TS]

00:29:57   it's not really a drone awful awful of [TS]

00:30:00   whether he's taking off his coat he gets [TS]

00:30:02   his tea again we got some tea action [TS]

00:30:04   happening here sit down to read the [TS]

00:30:05   letter and Markel i love his letter [TS]

00:30:08   opener but I was just about to say it [TS]

00:30:10   doesn't just over-the-top ridiculous [TS]

00:30:12   letter opener that's what I had a word i [TS]

00:30:14   know i had a briefing that because [TS]

00:30:16   there's actually like a saber on his [TS]

00:30:18   desk and when I picks up is like a [TS]

00:30:19   shorter version i kept expected this [TS]

00:30:21   time as a quick disease the giant [TS]

00:30:23   circular that's ridiculous no it's just [TS]

00:30:25   like a like a scabby dagger [TS]

00:30:27   yeah so he opened the letter and then [TS]

00:30:29   spills his tea because then slips on it [TS]

00:30:32   breaks is now something shocking and [TS]

00:30:36   this leads to and then this sets in [TS]

00:30:37   motion the finally now we have the game [TS]

00:30:40   that is being played openly between the [TS]

00:30:43   superpowers Ryan [TS]

00:30:45   it's an emergency call to give a an end [TS]

00:30:48   in a very nice seen Ryan doesn't even [TS]

00:30:51   notice he's like reading the letter are [TS]

00:30:53   reading the intelligence in in an [TS]

00:30:54   elevator and he forgets to get out for a [TS]

00:30:56   while and then he gets out and then you [TS]

00:30:59   sort of notice that he's in a tunnel [TS]

00:31:00   that's going to the White House which I [TS]

00:31:02   think he's he sort of hasn't banks where [TS]

00:31:03   we going exactly and Greer gets to break [TS]

00:31:06   it to him that we're going to an [TS]

00:31:07   emergency briefing who's giving the [TS]

00:31:09   briefing [TS]

00:31:09   well you are the regular look on his [TS]

00:31:12   face he sold it so well and he just kind [TS]

00:31:15   of freezes as Greer's walking away [TS]

00:31:18   increase kind of a can basically say [TS]

00:31:19   it'll be okay you notice at him on the [TS]

00:31:21   back you know i will be fine i will say [TS]

00:31:24   that i am I like that the establishing [TS]

00:31:26   shot where they get out of the car and [TS]

00:31:28   walk into the building they sort of [TS]

00:31:29   panic bc the white house in the [TS]

00:31:30   background i was on that Street three [TS]

00:31:32   days ago and you cannot drive down that [TS]

00:31:34   Street much less park on that street [TS]

00:31:36   because man let me tell you secure has [TS]

00:31:37   changed [TS]

00:31:38   no good old days of the Cold War yeah [TS]

00:31:41   it's perfectly safe and I only thing you [TS]

00:31:44   have to worry about with a first-strike [TS]

00:31:45   nuclear launch [TS]

00:31:46   yeah it doesn't matter if you're on the [TS]

00:31:47   street from the White House for that or [TS]

00:31:48   not know who [TS]

00:31:49   so there's a there's a briefing seen all [TS]

00:31:52   the top brass is there including like [TS]

00:31:54   the national security advisor in the [TS]

00:31:55   Chairman Jeffrey help my favorite [TS]

00:31:57   character in the movie [TS]

00:31:58   yeah is used a hero movie is really good [TS]

00:32:02   so so jackets the briefing and says this [TS]

00:32:07   is a first-strike capability everybody's [TS]

00:32:08   really upset they start arguing about [TS]

00:32:09   among ourselves [TS]

00:32:10   Ryan is sitting there he like gives gets [TS]

00:32:12   the gets a thousand-yard stare and [TS]

00:32:14   figures out something very important and [TS]

00:32:16   hits the table and shout son-of-a-bitch [TS]

00:32:18   at which point everybody else is silent [TS]

00:32:20   and it is the most embarrassing thing in [TS]

00:32:22   your first white house briefing [TS]

00:32:23   everything I want to do that at every [TS]

00:32:25   meeting I've ever you have thought dr. [TS]

00:32:28   Ryan he calls out the general who's who [TS]

00:32:31   disputes him is have you ever met in [TS]

00:32:33   general you have I have an embassy [TS]

00:32:35   function he gets told to stay after [TS]

00:32:37   class by the national security advisor [TS]

00:32:39   and as he's leaving James Earl Jones [TS]

00:32:41   says to him I said speak your mind Jack [TS]

00:32:43   but she's really shit we should point [TS]

00:32:45   out that what what Jack Ryan has figured [TS]

00:32:50   out is that this is the year anniversary [TS]

00:32:52   of [TS]

00:32:53   of radius his wife's death and that [TS]

00:32:55   instead of being a rogue sub captain [TS]

00:32:58   sailing to the u.s. to launch a missile [TS]

00:33:02   attack he is in fact probably defecting [TS]

00:33:05   yes Jack Ryan's theory right right [TS]

00:33:08   knowing that he's lithuanian knowing [TS]

00:33:09   that his wife has died knowing that he [TS]

00:33:11   has nobody left at home and that he's [TS]

00:33:13   been able to handpick his crew because [TS]

00:33:14   he's been training all of these people [TS]

00:33:16   for decades that that the most likely [TS]

00:33:19   scenario here is that he is or at least [TS]

00:33:22   a serious a scenario to be taken [TS]

00:33:24   seriously that is defecting and he tells [TS]

00:33:26   us the National Security Advisor should [TS]

00:33:27   feel this is this guy you like great [TS]

00:33:29   character because this is where he says [TS]

00:33:31   look I'm a politician a politician which [TS]

00:33:34   means I'm a lion her sheet and when I'm [TS]

00:33:37   not kissing pictures i'm figuring out a [TS]

00:33:38   way to steal their lollipops [TS]

00:33:40   but I also keep my options open oh that [TS]

00:33:45   guy that I don't know if it's like a [TS]

00:33:47   Texan accent whatever accident this is [TS]

00:33:49   it is sore lightful and it works so well [TS]

00:33:52   oh yeah I i love jeffrey felt and all [TS]

00:33:54   his future interactions with with the [TS]

00:33:58   Russian ambassador the state's yeah [TS]

00:34:00   amazing and I you will get Andre it's [TS]

00:34:03   like we will because he says I'm [TS]

00:34:06   shooting a lie right and we see in the [TS]

00:34:08   complete lack of of truth in any of the [TS]

00:34:10   diplomatic conversations that happen [TS]

00:34:11   between the u.s. and the Soviet what I [TS]

00:34:13   also love about subsequent scenes with [TS]

00:34:15   with Jeffrey Pelt is he has a big bowl [TS]

00:34:17   of candy [TS]

00:34:18   yeah you consider that he fingers [TS]

00:34:21   continuous yes but he stole from the [TS]

00:34:22   baby's still from baby but what's good [TS]

00:34:25   is that he says you know you again you [TS]

00:34:27   get the sense despite all of that he's [TS]

00:34:29   doing his job here and it's like I'm [TS]

00:34:30   gonna keep my options open i I you know [TS]

00:34:32   the generals can think what they want [TS]

00:34:34   but I you know I'm interested in this [TS]

00:34:36   and I'm going to send you because you're [TS]

00:34:37   expendable but nothing anomalous like [TS]

00:34:41   too bad kid we get are a ticking clock [TS]

00:34:44   here to where he told him you have three [TS]

00:34:46   days three [TS]

00:34:47   that's right ok we'll take a brief break [TS]

00:34:49   now let me tell you about our next [TS]

00:34:50   sponsor its casper mattresses [TS]

00:34:52   obsessively engineered american-made [TS]

00:34:55   mattresses at a shockingly fair price [TS]

00:34:58   now you spend if you're a human being [TS]

00:35:00   and not some sort of Dracula about a [TS]

00:35:02   third of your life sleeping [TS]

00:35:04   let's make sure you're doing on [TS]

00:35:06   good mattress Casper brings together too [TS]

00:35:08   comfy technologies together for better [TS]

00:35:12   latex foam and memory foam latex foam [TS]

00:35:15   super kind of comfy and Khushi at the [TS]

00:35:17   very top of the mattress and then the [TS]

00:35:19   support that comes from the memory foam [TS]

00:35:20   a couple them together if you've just [TS]

00:35:22   felt memory foam by itself you have not [TS]

00:35:24   felt what Casper has to offer [TS]

00:35:27   it's got what they like to call just the [TS]

00:35:28   right sink and just the right balance [TS]

00:35:30   no matter how you sleep and here is more [TS]

00:35:33   good news [TS]

00:35:33   it's got a risk-free trial i know you go [TS]

00:35:36   to the mattress store and you think i [TS]

00:35:38   don't know if this is comfortable or not [TS]

00:35:39   it feels ok right now but in half an [TS]

00:35:41   hour or an hour would i be uncomfortable [TS]

00:35:44   overnight what I be uncomfortable I just [TS]

00:35:46   don't know risk-free trial means you can [TS]

00:35:48   try casper and see if you like it [TS]

00:35:56   up to a hundred days and if at any point [TS]

00:35:58   you decide it's not for you either [TS]

00:36:00   there's no risk they will pick it up and [TS]

00:36:02   take it away and you are out [TS]

00:36:05   nothing it's pretty cool they sent me to [TS]

00:36:06   1 i've been sleeping on it for months [TS]

00:36:07   now i really appreciate it [TS]

00:36:09   it is legitimately comfortable mattress [TS]

00:36:12   my wife and I are both very happy with [TS]

00:36:14   the new mattress five hundred dollars [TS]

00:36:16   for a twin up to 9 50 for a king-size [TS]

00:36:18   mattress compare those to the industry [TS]

00:36:20   prices i think you'll find it's an [TS]

00:36:22   outstanding price and now i can make it [TS]

00:36:24   even better you can get fifty dollars [TS]

00:36:26   off toward any mattress purchase at [TS]

00:36:28   casper by going to this special address [TS]

00:36:31   Casper dot-com / smell that's my last [TS]

00:36:34   name [TS]

00:36:35   Casper calm / smell and use my last name [TS]

00:36:38   as your code smell for fifty dollars off [TS]

00:36:41   any mattress purchase at casper terms [TS]

00:36:44   and conditions apply [TS]

00:36:45   thank you so much to Casper for [TS]

00:36:47   sponsoring the incomparable cut to [TS]

00:36:50   stellan skarsgard ellen scenery [TS]

00:36:52   Skarsgard as tuple of you may know him [TS]

00:36:56   as the guy from like Thor and the [TS]

00:36:57   Avengers but here he was subcommander [TS]

00:37:00   tuple of who is going to announces we're [TS]

00:37:03   going to kill Ramius that speaking of [TS]

00:37:06   things that are hard to reconcile even [TS]

00:37:07   though i saw this long before girl with [TS]

00:37:10   the dragon tattoo reconciling his [TS]

00:37:12   character that movie with tupolev in one [TS]

00:37:16   sense well you know I'm trying to spoil [TS]

00:37:18   the other movie [TS]

00:37:19   in one sense it sort of makes sense but [TS]

00:37:21   in a lot of ways it's like what did [TS]

00:37:22   these are two completely different [TS]

00:37:23   people which I guess is a testament to [TS]

00:37:25   stones and starts collecting ability [TS]

00:37:27   I mean he's really good and you hate to [TS]

00:37:30   pull of the moment you can meet him [TS]

00:37:31   well you just hate that guy he's really [TS]

00:37:33   here sweaty and awful we don't like him [TS]

00:37:36   before we meet him because they asked [TS]

00:37:37   him about to pull 11 he says two levels [TS]

00:37:39   only concerned with two purlins there's [TS]

00:37:41   an overall mid to upper levels hard for [TS]

00:37:42   Cooper there's no room in anyone elses [TS]

00:37:45   your heart for every there's no room in [TS]

00:37:46   two gloves are for anybody but to get [TS]

00:37:48   that you hold a special place in his [TS]

00:37:50   heart I don't know [TS]

00:37:51   yes the smallest part also he just he [TS]

00:37:53   just does devour the scenery around him [TS]

00:37:56   in this movie yes there's a lot of [TS]

00:37:57   shouting from stellan skarsgard that [TS]

00:38:00   work that's okay [TS]

00:38:01   it totally works totally yes he's your [TS]

00:38:02   real rogue sub captain [TS]

00:38:04   yes so I'm really interesting scene [TS]

00:38:07   comes after this which is the there's [TS]

00:38:09   the meeting of the collaborators this is [TS]

00:38:10   where we get the sense that that Jack [TS]

00:38:12   Ryan has hinted at here which is he's [TS]

00:38:14   assembled his group and here we see them [TS]

00:38:16   all meeting at a at AII wrote down [TS]

00:38:19   originally that it was there they have [TS]

00:38:21   dinner but no Connor eats the rest of [TS]

00:38:24   them just sort of sit there and watch [TS]

00:38:25   him eat and text him tim curry gets [TS]

00:38:27   kicked out beforehand [TS]

00:38:28   yes because tim curry is not one of the [TS]

00:38:31   trusted house he's not he's not doesn't [TS]

00:38:33   get a dinner either [TS]

00:38:34   he is the stuccis the dupe he's the mark [TS]

00:38:36   and the rest of them are upset because [TS]

00:38:38   they expected this to be much more [TS]

00:38:40   straightforward and as a defection but [TS]

00:38:44   instead it's ago you had to make a [TS]

00:38:46   political statement no they weren't [TS]

00:38:48   expecting him to send a letter to his [TS]

00:38:50   father exactly and at which scrambles [TS]

00:38:52   the entire Soviet fleet and i believe [TS]

00:38:54   that the murder of the political officer [TS]

00:38:57   Sean Connery freelances yeah yeah they [TS]

00:39:01   were worked up about Putin being killed [TS]

00:39:03   and then they they were really worked up [TS]

00:39:05   about the letter to be Doran because [TS]

00:39:07   they know that the holes the full the [TS]

00:39:09   whole fleet is gonna come after them [TS]

00:39:10   I wish information it's sweet jazz baby [TS]

00:39:14   he's just gets very calm as he's [TS]

00:39:16   explaining this meeting is dinner [TS]

00:39:18   more cheat anybody i give us one chance [TS]

00:39:20   mr. all that Morty every Morty is grote [TS]

00:39:23   is a great line it's I converter I'm [TS]

00:39:27   just gonna pour my tea and they're all [TS]

00:39:28   arguing about whether or not this is [TS]

00:39:30   going to work and we get we get our [TS]

00:39:32   we get our like little like 30 second [TS]

00:39:34   character sketch about this is the guy [TS]

00:39:36   that worries all the time [TS]

00:39:37   this is the guy that's like matter [TS]

00:39:38   really care just sort of wanted to agree [TS]

00:39:40   the audience listening I this yeah yeah [TS]

00:39:43   and we have a sam neill sort of like [TS]

00:39:45   running interference always you and and [TS]

00:39:48   and then being like when they have a [TS]

00:39:50   moment privately where they're like yeah [TS]

00:39:51   I'm not gonna like disagree with you in [TS]

00:39:53   front of all the guys but like a good [TS]

00:39:55   idea [TS]

00:39:57   you're afraid of awfully well you should [TS]

00:39:59   be personally I give us one chance in [TS]

00:40:02   three we get some buckaroo [TS]

00:40:05   yes I just getting the right that's [TS]

00:40:09   right which which is a which ends up [TS]

00:40:11   getting a paid off later when when we [TS]

00:40:14   have the boarding of the sub with scott [TS]

00:40:17   going with this with his sidearm we cut [TS]

00:40:21   back to Jack Ryan taking a plane ride it [TS]

00:40:24   was a bumpy plane ride where there's a [TS]

00:40:26   lot of conversation about you should [TS]

00:40:28   have seen the last flight we were on [TS]

00:40:29   everybody was vomiting everywhere all [TS]

00:40:31   the answers on SideReel wait you give in [TS]

00:40:32   my notes yeah next time Jack just [TS]

00:40:34   putting the memo but uh oh yeah easy he [TS]

00:40:37   tells himself for the rest of the movie [TS]

00:40:38   that was a terrible mistake should email [TS]

00:40:40   but he gets out he gets on the ship [TS]

00:40:42   which is Captain by fred thompson bet I [TS]

00:40:45   believe he was an active member [TS]

00:40:46   Fred Dalton Thompson he's the Admiral [TS]

00:40:48   yep there's a there's another captain on [TS]

00:40:50   the ship who doesn't like jacket whose [TS]

00:40:52   Moriarty from Star Trek The Next [TS]

00:40:53   Generation by the way see how that's why [TS]

00:40:56   new hero haha man she is the other actor [TS]

00:40:59   I don't like in this movie it it is like [TS]

00:41:01   he won a contest had to appear in this [TS]

00:41:04   film he does a 180 though like that [TS]

00:41:07   looks like a very uniform right he goes [TS]

00:41:09   from hating jak2 really liking him yeah [TS]

00:41:11   he starts off like super I think that [TS]

00:41:13   actors good at the stuffed shirt part [TS]

00:41:14   certainly that's what Moriarty is and [TS]

00:41:16   and here he seems a little bit like oh [TS]

00:41:17   who does he think he is coming on our [TS]

00:41:19   ship like this like but really they have [TS]

00:41:21   Jack wearing a commander's Navy uniform [TS]

00:41:24   which is sort of the idea of him [TS]

00:41:25   blending in right because he's just a [TS]

00:41:27   civilian who shows up on this ship [TS]

00:41:28   everyone's gonna work with hills that [TS]

00:41:30   guy and so of course you know that the [TS]

00:41:33   captain feels a little bent out of shape [TS]

00:41:34   because he's like he's not a naval [TS]

00:41:36   officers and he's wearing this uniform [TS]

00:41:37   and that's where we like an hour into [TS]

00:41:39   the movie we get Jack Ryan's backstory [TS]

00:41:41   which fred thompson says I you know I [TS]

00:41:43   checked up on this on this kid [TS]

00:41:45   he was in a helicopter accident at the [TS]

00:41:47   Naval Academy you gotta cut him some [TS]

00:41:48   slack he spent like a year in the [TS]

00:41:50   hospital finishes last year from you [TS]

00:41:53   know for bed basically because his legs [TS]

00:41:54   were all broken so you know yeah he [TS]

00:41:57   didn't serve but he did graduate from [TS]

00:41:59   the Naval Academy cut him a little bit [TS]

00:42:00   of slack which is it's a nice scene that [TS]

00:42:02   that you know kind of gets it we [TS]

00:42:04   understand Ryan but we also gotta get [TS]

00:42:06   like four Thompson's chewing scenery [TS]

00:42:07   here but again he's like this fred [TS]

00:42:10   thompson is most fred thompson yeah i'm [TS]

00:42:12   down i want to see it [TS]

00:42:14   Russians don't take crap without a plan [TS]

00:42:16   son I'm not I'm a straight shooter boy [TS]

00:42:18   let me tell you some reverse mortgages [TS]

00:42:20   no idea where the other thing Fred [TS]

00:42:24   Thompson does here is is explained the [TS]

00:42:27   complexity of the situation to Ryan and [TS]

00:42:29   I like that I like that a lot because [TS]

00:42:30   ryan sort of like well i got this all [TS]

00:42:31   figured out on top of it and and he's [TS]

00:42:33   like you got to get the guys off the [TS]

00:42:34   boat they got to think it's destroyed [TS]

00:42:36   this is this for this to work [TS]

00:42:38   it's not just you know we don't just go [TS]

00:42:40   out there and they hand us the boat we [TS]

00:42:42   got to do like all this stuff and I i [TS]

00:42:45   like that because it that not only sort [TS]

00:42:47   of sets Ryan back a little bit but it [TS]

00:42:48   gives us the map for the rest of the [TS]

00:42:50   movie about how it's gonna go [TS]

00:42:51   which i think is a nice touch yeah it [TS]

00:42:53   gives us a chance to see Ryan headed [TS]

00:42:55   down his back foot right like weird huh [TS]

00:42:57   he's not sure what's going on he is [TS]

00:42:59   really an analyst right he's out of his [TS]

00:43:00   depth [TS]

00:43:01   no pun intended so so yes meanwhile [TS]

00:43:04   meanwhile underwater they are tracking [TS]

00:43:07   the the Dallas is tracking a sound and [TS]

00:43:10   Jonesy says that it sounds like it's [TS]

00:43:15   like magma displacement but if you play [TS]

00:43:17   it back at ten times speed it's got to [TS]

00:43:19   be man-made and it's headed and there's [TS]

00:43:21   that nice scene where he's like he finds [TS]

00:43:23   out all their contacts with the sub if [TS]

00:43:25   it's headed for Thor's twins which is [TS]

00:43:27   this landmark in that goes into a canyon [TS]

00:43:29   uh undersea canyon and he's like a ryan [TS]

00:43:34   at the at the briefing at the White [TS]

00:43:35   House he's kind of putting himself out [TS]

00:43:37   there because this kind of wild [TS]

00:43:38   speculation about something that's [TS]

00:43:39   totally crazy that this sound that isn't [TS]

00:43:42   isn't a sub but maybe a sub that we've [TS]

00:43:45   never heard before and there's our I run [TS]

00:43:47   this is a great scott glenn moment where [TS]

00:43:49   he says relax Jones you sold me [TS]

00:43:51   yeah I love that day and i also like [TS]

00:43:54   this whole like sort of laying the [TS]

00:43:55   groundwork for we've got this canyon [TS]

00:43:57   that the Russians have like really [TS]

00:43:59   maps of so they basically just three [TS]

00:44:00   speed runs down it yeah it's just like [TS]

00:44:02   bullseye womp rats back home and back [TS]

00:44:04   and so haha you know what I saw this [TS]

00:44:08   with movie for the first time I don't [TS]

00:44:10   remember how old i was probably between [TS]

00:44:12   10 and 15 and the first time I saw this [TS]

00:44:15   in jones he gets out his tape recorder [TS]

00:44:16   in it and you hear that thing that [TS]

00:44:18   sounds kind of like a whale and then he [TS]

00:44:20   does the ten-time speed [TS]

00:44:22   I have no idea if that was really the [TS]

00:44:23   same sound 10 times faster but my 10 or [TS]

00:44:26   12 or whatever your old mine exploded [TS]

00:44:29   when I heard the fast version was like [TS]

00:44:32   oh my god oh my god that's really it [TS]

00:44:33   that's really he's got it he's got it i [TS]

00:44:35   was so excited in it just blew my mind [TS]

00:44:37   that that that that sound supposedly [TS]

00:44:40   created this other sound I'd love that I [TS]

00:44:43   think it works because it's this long [TS]

00:44:44   slow sound but the point is that it [TS]

00:44:46   imposes at regular intervals and when [TS]

00:44:48   you speed it up you realize there's no [TS]

00:44:49   way that couldn't that could be a [TS]

00:44:51   natural phenomenon because it is exact [TS]

00:44:53   intervals [TS]

00:44:54   it's an intimate with it with a tape [TS]

00:44:56   player that can go bad fast speeds [TS]

00:44:58   because it's the eighties well and of [TS]

00:45:00   course we also get Jonesy saying that he [TS]

00:45:01   can track it right which is kind of [TS]

00:45:03   blind the whole point of this drive is [TS]

00:45:06   that I supposed to be super silent but [TS]

00:45:07   none are our guys are better guys config [TS]

00:45:09   configuring our release they can under [TS]

00:45:11   circumstance certain circumstances [TS]

00:45:13   knowing where to look [TS]

00:45:14   they can do some tracking of it but it [TS]

00:45:16   is funny that in the first encounter [TS]

00:45:17   with the caterpillar a guy on a on a [TS]

00:45:21   submarine a u.s. submarine figures it [TS]

00:45:24   out [TS]

00:45:25   please look for the best we got your [TS]

00:45:28   worries the criminals Jonesy they should [TS]

00:45:29   read this with Josie he is the sole [TS]

00:45:31   owner sonar savant so if anyone could do [TS]

00:45:34   it it's Jonesy what we have we have a [TS]

00:45:36   note here which is that radiated my note [TS]

00:45:38   reads radius is griefing his crew which [TS]

00:45:40   is he makes them run the speed run even [TS]

00:45:42   faster yes that's true it's like I got [TS]

00:45:45   this under control you give me a [TS]

00:45:46   stopwatch and I a map and I'll fly the [TS]

00:45:48   Alps in a plain black vote yet do your [TS]

00:45:50   speed double during the stuff must not [TS]

00:45:52   be very precise because I you know they [TS]

00:45:54   do precise countdowns by the time it [TS]

00:45:56   takes for them to relay all the orders [TS]

00:45:58   it go down to the second with us or just [TS]

00:46:00   the guy who's the navigator does he know [TS]

00:46:02   exactly how many seconds it takes for [TS]

00:46:04   one guy to tell the other guy to tell [TS]

00:46:05   the other guy to do the thing that makes [TS]

00:46:07   the subject i assume so that bothers me [TS]

00:46:09   as well like L seems really inefficient [TS]

00:46:11   have three [TS]

00:46:12   different guys with st. Marq Atlanta [TS]

00:46:14   over these four feet away you could just [TS]

00:46:16   tell him yourself [TS]

00:46:17   yeah or you could just push the button [TS]

00:46:18   for the bridge is not that big yeah that [TS]

00:46:20   that seemed but it is exciting and he's [TS]

00:46:22   pushing them to go faster but then [TS]

00:46:24   there's an like a blast in the cryogenic [TS]

00:46:27   plant which is failed and so they are [TS]

00:46:31   they're there they're in trouble and it [TS]

00:46:33   turns out that their sabotage [TS]

00:46:35   meanwhile this is about what we get the [TS]

00:46:37   scene with the Russian ambassador of [TS]

00:46:38   national security adviser where it's [TS]

00:46:40   entirely bogus how can we help but no no [TS]

00:46:43   we're fine terribly sorry we're going [TS]

00:46:46   mad can walk from a static Greenland [TS]

00:46:48   Scott done without getting his new way [TS]

00:46:51   to go back just very briefly when the [TS]

00:46:53   doctor comes down the the ladder and [TS]

00:46:56   it's just freaking out about the [TS]

00:46:59   radiation that's at this moment your [TS]

00:47:01   likes not very good out [TS]

00:47:03   yeah I can understand why they didn't [TS]

00:47:04   want him part of this because my side [TS]

00:47:06   when I smell terrible terrible done if [TS]

00:47:09   you have horrible fears of radiation do [TS]

00:47:11   not lock yourself up in a submarine with [TS]

00:47:13   an interior covering yeah smart smart [TS]

00:47:16   now the the attack the attack comes from [TS]

00:47:18   the fleets that are flying over the the [TS]

00:47:22   airplanes and they're dropping they're [TS]

00:47:24   dropping depth charges basically into [TS]

00:47:26   the so this is this is where you get the [TS]

00:47:29   slack time that the navigator puts in [TS]

00:47:30   right because this is where you've got [TS]

00:47:32   the plus 10 11 12 and then radius is [TS]

00:47:37   like hard over your rifle rudder reverse [TS]

00:47:41   starboard engine that you know it [TS]

00:47:42   impacts on Thor's twins and they get [TS]

00:47:44   through the thing and all that it's very [TS]

00:47:46   exciting this is a this is a moment that [TS]

00:47:48   you know doesn't really have to be in [TS]

00:47:49   the movie but it really gives you the [TS]

00:47:51   sense that the Russian fleet is closing [TS]

00:47:53   in on them and they're in danger and [TS]

00:47:54   it's a really nice action c plus there's [TS]

00:47:56   the whole element of everybody else now [TS]

00:47:58   like trying to figure out wait they're [TS]

00:48:00   shooting actual torpedoes why are they [TS]

00:48:02   shooting at us and there's the point [TS]

00:48:04   where I wonder how we how well you can [TS]

00:48:05   sell the cruise like that you know the [TS]

00:48:07   non officers who are not involved in [TS]

00:48:09   this defection are all the sudden going [TS]

00:48:12   to be asking themselves [TS]

00:48:13   what's going on here yeah this is the [TS]

00:48:15   scene you have to have in every [TS]

00:48:16   submarine movie where it's the first [TS]

00:48:18   encounter with the depth charges or the [TS]

00:48:21   enemy torpedo or or what have you [TS]

00:48:24   where where everyone has to elude [TS]

00:48:27   everything and it's very tense so after [TS]

00:48:29   this we discover that they have indeed [TS]

00:48:30   been Scott sabotage because the really [TS]

00:48:31   shifty eyed engineer who is at this [TS]

00:48:34   point we think may have done the [TS]

00:48:35   sabotaging himself says oh you know that [TS]

00:48:38   you know that's this component that is [TS]

00:48:39   not easy to find has been sabotaged and [TS]

00:48:41   so now they're not sure what to make of [TS]

00:48:43   it the officers aren't sure what to make [TS]

00:48:45   of it and you know the crew is going to [TS]

00:48:46   find out which they eventually do and so [TS]

00:48:48   now they know that they're getting shot [TS]

00:48:49   out with real weapons they know they're [TS]

00:48:51   being sabotaged and so the crew is [TS]

00:48:53   getting really worked up about it but [TS]

00:48:55   then we have this comic relief of alec [TS]

00:48:57   baldwin in the shower doing a fred [TS]

00:48:59   thompson impression and it's one of a [TS]

00:49:01   couple impressions he doesn't i still [TS]

00:49:03   think it's hysterical [TS]

00:49:04   you know if she doesn't take a dump [TS]

00:49:07   someone without a plan and oh god it's [TS]

00:49:09   so good and Sandy starting to doubt [TS]

00:49:11   himself and trying to figure out like [TS]

00:49:12   you were talking about earlier you know [TS]

00:49:13   what do we do [TS]

00:49:14   how do you get this how do you get the [TS]

00:49:16   crew off the sub how do you get the crew [TS]

00:49:17   on nuclear dump haha hey Eureka it's a [TS]

00:49:22   great moment [TS]

00:49:23   mhm they slipped in the shower on some [TS]

00:49:25   tea it was really important haha yeah [TS]

00:49:28   but it's funny because you kind of take [TS]

00:49:30   this journey with him and you're [TS]

00:49:31   thinking to yourself well how would you [TS]

00:49:32   get us a crew to want to get off a [TS]

00:49:34   nuclear submarine and then when he [TS]

00:49:36   realizes it or at least for me anyway I [TS]

00:49:38   was like oh oh yeah now I get it and [TS]

00:49:41   then he runs up to the bridge of what [TS]

00:49:43   whatever bodies on the enterprise or [TS]

00:49:45   without having a price on paramount [TS]

00:49:46   picture and naturally and and they're a [TS]

00:49:50   little bit distracted at the time [TS]

00:49:51   yeah well you have the ranch yes we have [TS]

00:49:54   like a random crash that I you know [TS]

00:49:56   don't entirely follow what happened but [TS]

00:49:57   basically like a plane has clipped [TS]

00:49:59   another plane roll flying in formation [TS]

00:50:00   and yeah he's trying to make a landing I [TS]

00:50:03   finally figured out lo these many years [TS]

00:50:04   later what what has been happening is [TS]

00:50:06   you've got all the planes out because [TS]

00:50:08   where there's all this naval activity [TS]

00:50:10   going on the planes are flying recon and [TS]

00:50:13   they got a little bit too close in one [TS]

00:50:15   plane clipped the wing and its trying to [TS]

00:50:17   come in for an emergency landing and and [TS]

00:50:19   crash and that's why Fred Thompson says [TS]

00:50:21   this is you know we're gonna get a bunch [TS]

00:50:22   of people killed here its kind of [TS]

00:50:23   analogous to the situation where you [TS]

00:50:25   have the US and the [TS]

00:50:26   russian fighter planes planes over Syria [TS]

00:50:28   and there's like the danger that they're [TS]

00:50:30   gonna you know first off they could hit [TS]

00:50:32   each other they could you know they [TS]

00:50:33   could there could be an incident it's [TS]

00:50:34   like there's a lot of traffic going on [TS]

00:50:35   it's dangerous and that's what Fred [TS]

00:50:36   Thompson says here is like this is a [TS]

00:50:38   problem because of the escalation that [TS]

00:50:41   this is this this is really dangerous so [TS]

00:50:43   wouldn't it also gives us that more [TS]

00:50:44   direct moment of like we already know [TS]

00:50:46   Alec Baldwin hates his name why yeah and [TS]

00:50:48   the only rage the only way he's gonna [TS]

00:50:50   get out there too because i want to get [TS]

00:50:52   onto the Dallas is my helicopter we have [TS]

00:50:54   that pan over to a helicopter was like [TS]

00:50:55   thinking about it [TS]

00:50:57   no you're right that this was the [TS]

00:50:59   specific line that Fred Thompson says [TS]

00:51:02   and I'm i just want to get this on the [TS]

00:51:04   record because every time something goes [TS]

00:51:06   bad for me and my professional life I [TS]

00:51:08   say that slot this business will get out [TS]

00:51:11   of control [TS]

00:51:12   it will get out of control and we'll be [TS]

00:51:13   lucky to live through it [TS]

00:51:15   ok so good i also loved the mid-eighties [TS]

00:51:18   gps system that was basically the size [TS]

00:51:21   of the microsoft surface table I went [TS]

00:51:24   dialing things around ya know it's so [TS]

00:51:27   good that is also this is also where we [TS]

00:51:29   learned that really the the russian plot [TS]

00:51:31   is not to overtake radius it is rather [TS]

00:51:36   to drive him to the coast where a lot of [TS]

00:51:40   Soviet subs are waiting to sink him i [TS]

00:51:42   like that the Soviet subs are hanging [TS]

00:51:44   out like right on our coast yeah [TS]

00:51:46   international waters man just hanging [TS]

00:51:49   out like tonight I don't think I'm I'm [TS]

00:51:51   have breaking any classified information [TS]

00:51:53   here [TS]

00:51:54   my my my late father-in-law was a [TS]

00:51:57   submariner and he could tell some [TS]

00:52:01   stories about where he hung out off the [TS]

00:52:06   coast of countries which may or may not [TS]

00:52:07   have known that they were there [TS]

00:52:09   well then there's a good night was it [TS]

00:52:10   earlier on where yet some it's the skip [TS]

00:52:13   the Submariner mentions like when i was [TS]

00:52:15   a kid i help my dad build a bomb shelter [TS]

00:52:17   in the basement because someone parked a [TS]

00:52:19   bunch of nuclear missiles 90 miles off [TS]

00:52:20   Florida you know so we get like the [TS]

00:52:22   whole Cuban Missile Crisis angle and so [TS]

00:52:24   yeah I guess in some ways it isn't [TS]

00:52:26   surprising that we just got lots of [TS]

00:52:27   submarines fooling around doing things [TS]

00:52:29   this is also where i got i enjoy the [TS]

00:52:34   setup where we get the we get the line [TS]

00:52:36   where it would be like a seismic anomaly [TS]

00:52:37   and then we get Jonesy says it [TS]

00:52:40   you put in the computer and it's like it [TS]

00:52:41   goes back to its original language and [TS]

00:52:43   says it's magnet displacement and then [TS]

00:52:45   here he hears magma displacement and [TS]

00:52:47   Jack Ryan has that moment like would [TS]

00:52:49   that be a seismic anomaly and he makes [TS]

00:52:51   the connection it's just really fun to [TS]

00:52:52   see him make that connection before yes [TS]

00:52:54   and he's like this is it I gotta do this [TS]

00:52:57   and so they are you know next time Jack [TS]

00:53:00   ride a goddamn memo and the market goes [TS]

00:53:02   in his flying gascan his job and [TS]

00:53:05   stripped down and turn to find gas can [TS]

00:53:07   it's funny because they go into a lot [TS]

00:53:08   more description about this in the book [TS]

00:53:10   I've been reading years but they talk [TS]

00:53:13   about how the kind of forget the acronym [TS]

00:53:16   they do mentioned in the movie but the [TS]

00:53:18   this the computer system that the sonar [TS]

00:53:20   is using it was originally to figure out [TS]

00:53:24   where earthquakes were if memory serves [TS]

00:53:26   and so that's think yes yes signal [TS]

00:53:29   algorithmic processing system or [TS]

00:53:30   something like that [TS]

00:53:31   well anyways so what Josie said is [TS]

00:53:33   accurate and that's what they say in the [TS]

00:53:34   book is that when it doesn't really know [TS]

00:53:36   what to make of things that just says me [TS]

00:53:38   it's probably an earthquake and so [TS]

00:53:40   that's that's exactly what was happening [TS]

00:53:42   here just like you said Jason that [TS]

00:53:44   yellow a seismic event [TS]

00:53:45   oh maybe it's just because absence [TS]

00:53:47   fooled and maybe that's the SOB in it is [TS]

00:53:49   so it is a another funny Eureka moment [TS]

00:53:51   so so I let's say we got a scene we got [TS]

00:53:54   the scene between Samuel and sean [TS]

00:53:55   connery that is the the wonderful do you [TS]

00:53:58   think they will let me live in Montana I [TS]

00:54:01   maybe I'll get a recreational vehicle [TS]

00:54:03   and drive from state to state will i [TS]

00:54:04   need papers no papers and I will marry a [TS]

00:54:07   round American woman and she will raise [TS]

00:54:09   rap i will need two wives i would like [TS]

00:54:10   to live in arizona at least mhm [TS]

00:54:13   it's a very nice little moment and this [TS]

00:54:14   is also that tender moment that needs to [TS]

00:54:16   happen now because he's good now we all [TS]

00:54:18   like the silly man right love Vasily [TS]

00:54:22   that's where i miss the piece of fishing [TS]

00:54:24   yes he was a wee he made his famous made [TS]

00:54:28   his wife a widow when you married her on [TS]

00:54:29   the day Mary what a jerk [TS]

00:54:31   yeah yeah not good planning on his part [TS]

00:54:35   I've been achieved for 40 years award [TS]

00:54:38   see with no battles no monuments only [TS]

00:54:40   casualties casualties shot I'm waxing a [TS]

00:54:44   little poetic in my old age [TS]

00:54:47   there's a crazy Ivan they explain the [TS]

00:54:48   crazy Ivan where every so often Russian [TS]

00:54:50   sub commanders will just a turn [TS]

00:54:53   I love that whenever you know i watched [TS]

00:54:55   the first episode of firefly again [TS]

00:54:57   yeah that's crazy Ivan and i love that [TS]

00:55:00   that is a reference throughout because I [TS]

00:55:02   it inevitably someone watching it was [TS]

00:55:04   like oh that's funny that's a firefly [TS]

00:55:05   thing like no no that's not for right [TS]

00:55:07   over thing that's right you're missing [TS]

00:55:09   the original reference which is a great [TS]

00:55:11   scene 2 because it's intercut between [TS]

00:55:13   them sitting there you know having a [TS]

00:55:15   philosophical conversation and and you [TS]

00:55:17   know the Dallas people like freaking out [TS]

00:55:19   like they're turning around we gotta [TS]

00:55:21   stop everything let's explain you know [TS]

00:55:22   they we have again the explication what [TS]

00:55:24   is a crazy i don't know they're just [TS]

00:55:25   checking to make sure because they're [TS]

00:55:26   paranoid and they basically do like a [TS]

00:55:28   circle around the Dallas and because [TS]

00:55:32   they say oh my god he went right around [TS]

00:55:33   us and kind of watching some of the [TS]

00:55:35   exterior shots and i think i actually by [TS]

00:55:37   the way you know full credit to like the [TS]

00:55:39   the special effects work done here [TS]

00:55:41   because i think most of the underseas [TS]

00:55:43   segments are pretty good especially and [TS]

00:55:45   you know given the year this happened [TS]

00:55:46   they did have some i guess some access [TS]

00:55:49   to submarines for filming purposes but a [TS]

00:55:51   lot of these are models and in fact i [TS]

00:55:53   read in one of the trivial things that [TS]

00:55:54   like the Red October model is like not [TS]

00:55:56   even underwater for any of the shot they [TS]

00:55:58   like composited all in countermeasures [TS]

00:56:00   aside the special effects really hold up [TS]

00:56:02   well the countermeasures and when the [TS]

00:56:04   torpedo splits that's yeah so yeah yeah [TS]

00:56:07   there's that and there's some matting [TS]

00:56:09   issues and stuff especially that last [TS]

00:56:10   scene where they're standing on top [TS]

00:56:12   well she's terrible but other than that [TS]

00:56:14   you know it's other than those six [TS]

00:56:15   things yeah other than like it too it's [TS]

00:56:18   a two hour plus movie and we need picked [TS]

00:56:21   a half dozen things [TS]

00:56:22   no you're right you're absolutely right [TS]

00:56:23   i agree with you Dan that it really does [TS]

00:56:25   stand up and hold up well and so next [TS]

00:56:28   thing you know the Dallas has found the [TS]

00:56:29   October because you know they just did [TS]

00:56:31   the crazy Ivan right around him around [TS]

00:56:33   the balance but then they get on the [TS]

00:56:35   e.l.f which is very important and [TS]

00:56:38   crimson tide a movie is a wholly [TS]

00:56:40   unrelated to this movie and I'm [TS]

00:56:42   extremely get this message that Alec [TS]

00:56:45   Baldwin's coming and you know somebody [TS]

00:56:47   got a surface or up there asked to go [TS]

00:56:48   for a stunt like this [TS]

00:56:50   I'm so anyway so the surface and Alec [TS]

00:56:52   Baldwin is trying to convince the [TS]

00:56:54   chopper pilot to wait just long and [TS]

00:56:56   you've got 10 minutes we'll give me 10 [TS]

00:56:57   minutes you'll have a war situation mr. [TS]

00:57:00   yeah and so then he decides when he's [TS]

00:57:03   told no it's not gonna work come up come [TS]

00:57:05   up he says well [TS]

00:57:06   we'll just go in the dream on hooks and [TS]

00:57:08   drops in and they send out the diver and [TS]

00:57:10   they dragged him in he's soaking wet and [TS]

00:57:11   cold a synthetic bait electrocute the [TS]

00:57:14   the XO to on the way over [TS]

00:57:17   because you're trying to like grab him [TS]

00:57:18   with this little oh yeah always a nasty [TS]

00:57:20   cut yeah you said falls off the [TS]

00:57:22   conning-tower I'm like wax his head [TS]

00:57:24   that's dedication guys I also loved i [TS]

00:57:27   was watching this with my wife earlier [TS]

00:57:29   and I commented to her i love that the [TS]

00:57:31   moment that Alec Baldwin pitches into [TS]

00:57:33   the drink [TS]

00:57:34   the choppers like alright have fun I [TS]

00:57:36   yeah whenever history [TS]

00:57:37   yeah I mean I it's understandable [TS]

00:57:39   because what are they really gonna do [TS]

00:57:40   but at the same time like she's you guys [TS]

00:57:42   are cold [TS]

00:57:43   it's alright well good luck to you he's [TS]

00:57:45   your problem now it's funny but yea Alec [TS]

00:57:47   Baldwin's all excited with himself [TS]

00:57:48   because he did this ridiculous stunt to [TS]

00:57:50   get on the to get on the the Dallas and [TS]

00:57:52   we are about to figure out what that [TS]

00:57:55   what it is that that he's so excited [TS]

00:57:57   about but first we have to go back to [TS]

00:57:59   Jeffrey Pelt giving the poor russian [TS]

00:58:01   ambassador a hard time [TS]

00:58:02   yeah because what what they now have [TS]

00:58:04   changed their story because they've lost [TS]

00:58:05   the Red October and so now they say oh [TS]

00:58:07   no it turns out radius is crazy and he's [TS]

00:58:10   gonna fire his missiles and destroy your [TS]

00:58:12   cities so you better help us blow him up [TS]

00:58:14   and this is the message that is sent [TS]

00:58:16   just to Scott Glenn on the Dallas and so [TS]

00:58:20   unfortunately this is the worst timing [TS]

00:58:22   possible Jack Ryan has just come there [TS]

00:58:24   to say radius is defecting and they get [TS]

00:58:26   a message that follows that says he's [TS]

00:58:28   not going to defect instead he's going [TS]

00:58:30   to kill us all and we need to blow him [TS]

00:58:31   up and so we're gonna go find the Red [TS]

00:58:33   October and we're gonna blow him up and [TS]

00:58:36   they and so they think they go back down [TS]

00:58:38   and there's another crazy Ivan and ryan [TS]

00:58:40   says he always turns to starboard on his [TS]

00:58:43   crazy opens at the bottom of the hour [TS]

00:58:44   and fortunately he does take that exact [TS]

00:58:46   moment to do a crazy Ivan which gets at [TS]

00:58:49   least Scott Glenn to pause i do love the [TS]

00:58:52   line that he's like you know if he makes [TS]

00:58:54   one false move I'm gonna blow him right [TS]

00:58:55   to Mars [TS]

00:58:56   yeah where there's water so he can just [TS]

00:58:58   drag the submarine still haha that's [TS]

00:59:02   delightful and it turns out the jack [TS]

00:59:03   ryan we find out a couple minutes later [TS]

00:59:05   I just guessed cause he needed a break [TS]

00:59:07   he didn't know he'd go to start but he [TS]

00:59:09   just got a lot that made against 5015 [TS]

00:59:12   yeah I like Scott Glenn here too is like [TS]

00:59:14   we just unzip the fly right it's like [TS]

00:59:16   he's he's yeah he's opening himself too [TS]

00:59:19   dangerous [TS]

00:59:20   here but taking a chance that Ramos is [TS]

00:59:23   not gonna try to shoot at them and so he [TS]

00:59:25   Iranian is also so the the what's the [TS]

00:59:28   etiquette of a of a trust but verify [TS]

00:59:31   kind of situation is that the the Dallas [TS]

00:59:33   has their torpedoes armed and the doors [TS]

00:59:36   open and the Red October has the their [TS]

00:59:39   torpedoes armed but the door is not open [TS]

00:59:41   and that's like you know and they're [TS]

00:59:43   more scolding back and forth with the [TS]

00:59:45   periscope yeah well the answer is that [TS]

00:59:46   right then the surface and do the most [TS]

00:59:48   Morse code on the periscope when I more [TS]

00:59:50   so rusty I may be sending dimensions and [TS]

00:59:52   playmate of the month and also something [TS]

00:59:54   i did not understand what is this movie [TS]

00:59:58   but now it is really [TS]

00:59:58   but now it is really [TS]

01:00:00   awesome and and i love this whole scene [TS]

01:00:02   and it's funny to see this kind of what [TS]

01:00:05   is the submarine equivalent like you're [TS]

01:00:07   saying Jason of putting your hands in [TS]

01:00:08   your pockets you know I'm playing it [TS]

01:00:09   cool and apparently that's not opening [TS]

01:00:11   your doors [TS]

01:00:12   yeah exactly that this is the one scene [TS]

01:00:15   where Sean Connery really acts because [TS]

01:00:19   he's he's looking at the out the [TS]

01:00:22   periscope and reading the Morse code and [TS]

01:00:24   you get to see his reaction which is oh [TS]

01:00:26   my god he might pull this off [TS]

01:00:29   yes yes he's so taken aback the way that [TS]

01:00:31   the way that he slams down the aisle of [TS]

01:00:34   that the controls of the of the [TS]

01:00:36   periscope is just a little [TS]

01:00:38   oh we may not die i'm the luckiest junk [TS]

01:00:42   in junk berg it's interesting you say [TS]

01:00:44   that though because my reading of what [TS]

01:00:46   he was over that was that he was kind of [TS]

01:00:48   pissed off that it was discovered that [TS]

01:00:51   he was upset that somebody else was the [TS]

01:00:53   smartest he was and and that they that [TS]

01:00:56   they had figured out that they're going [TS]

01:00:57   to defect and of course it would be [TS]

01:01:00   terrible of us not to mention one ping [TS]

01:01:03   only the silly [TS]

01:01:04   yeah i'm only please one king before but [TS]

01:01:07   captain I just sent I just like it i've [TS]

01:01:12   seen this movie probably fifty or [TS]

01:01:14   hundred times it is one of my favorite [TS]

01:01:16   movies the entire world [TS]

01:01:17   it just occurred to me tonight if [TS]

01:01:19   they're talking on the periscopes via [TS]

01:01:22   Morse code [TS]

01:01:23   why not just say the word sounds good [TS]

01:01:26   like why do we have to do this whole one [TS]

01:01:27   ping ping I think because it's like [TS]

01:01:29   essentially it's just making a blatant [TS]

01:01:32   right like the fact i think what's [TS]

01:01:33   what's cool about the ping when they do [TS]

01:01:35   it is it is definitely loud right [TS]

01:01:38   everybody on the ship hears it and it's [TS]

01:01:40   kind of again the similar sort of [TS]

01:01:43   etiquette thing of like putting our [TS]

01:01:45   cards on the table yep we're not hiding [TS]

01:01:47   everything like because when you're [TS]

01:01:49   having that that Morse code conversation [TS]

01:01:51   it's like totally a one-on-one [TS]

01:01:52   conversation right so I feel like [TS]

01:01:55   there's something like there again [TS]

01:01:56   they're exposing themselves and being [TS]

01:01:58   like yup we see you here we are like [TS]

01:02:01   we're like it's a trust thing but you're [TS]

01:02:04   right like they could do it on the [TS]

01:02:05   periscopes but I feel like there's [TS]

01:02:06   there's something more like the sort of [TS]

01:02:08   laying it all down there with the [TS]

01:02:10   p and make sense yeah I think I think [TS]

01:02:12   you're both right in the sense that the [TS]

01:02:14   graininess is surprised as a somebody in [TS]

01:02:17   the chatroom just said a little [TS]

01:02:18   confounded that the Americans figured it [TS]

01:02:20   out i think he's surprised and relieved [TS]

01:02:22   right because he's at the world of [TS]

01:02:23   trouble and they've already figured out [TS]

01:02:25   so he doesn't have to try and explain it [TS]

01:02:27   like because you know he gets he gets [TS]

01:02:29   put in this position by the Americans [TS]

01:02:31   and he's taking a big chance that this [TS]

01:02:33   is all going to go south to but they got [TS]

01:02:35   it they figured it out there chances are [TS]

01:02:37   up from one in 323 now who knows [TS]

01:02:41   although it does raise the question once [TS]

01:02:43   again what is the rest of the crew [TS]

01:02:45   thinking about this because they know [TS]

01:02:47   they're sending the ping outright like [TS]

01:02:49   everybody on the bridge there with him [TS]

01:02:50   and me and he's like we're gonna run [TS]

01:02:52   away from the Americans yeah it's like [TS]

01:02:53   they always seems just like taunting [TS]

01:02:55   them i guess it's just it's one of those [TS]

01:02:58   things that gets me like what are you [TS]

01:03:00   thinking if you're on the bridge think [TS]

01:03:01   I've got my trust trust your captain and [TS]

01:03:03   he does the theatrics with sam neill [TS]

01:03:05   where he's like you know we're gonna [TS]

01:03:06   have to we're gonna have to turn and run [TS]

01:03:08   and and you know not there there's not a [TS]

01:03:11   week that goes by that I don't quote [TS]

01:03:12   this movie in regular conversation and [TS]

01:03:17   the probably the most quoted line [TS]

01:03:19   my wife and I will say this when we're [TS]

01:03:20   driving and there's someone driving [TS]

01:03:22   erratically in front of us are around us [TS]

01:03:25   and we'll see one of us will say we must [TS]

01:03:27   give the shamanic a wide but we're doing [TS]

01:03:32   your crazy Ivan one yes what about it [TS]

01:03:34   and so after this we get our brief [TS]

01:03:37   moment with the crazy creepy engineer [TS]

01:03:40   coming up the stairs smoking looking [TS]

01:03:42   directly there and yes yes so creepy and [TS]

01:03:46   the first time i saw this i feel which [TS]

01:03:48   one of you said this earlier but I was [TS]

01:03:49   convinced he's that guy at me [TS]

01:03:51   yeah that's me yeah lots we did sort of [TS]

01:03:55   this is the ok plans on this is 20 20 [TS]

01:03:57   hours later there's a reactor problem [TS]

01:03:59   there's radiation everybody's freaking [TS]

01:04:01   out oh my god when he's got it strapped [TS]

01:04:03   in so the surface and evacuate the US [TS]

01:04:08   ship is coming oh no we're gonna have to [TS]

01:04:10   okay you guys did you guys get in the [TS]

01:04:11   lifeboats and we will go back down and [TS]

01:04:14   scuttle the shafts you're getting this [TS]

01:04:16   destroyer bearing down on the now [TS]

01:04:18   surface Red October the crew is [TS]

01:04:20   abandoning ship onto life rafts and and [TS]

01:04:23   sean connery turns to dr. frank-n-furter [TS]

01:04:28   says you will go with the crew and me [TS]

01:04:32   and the rest of the officers will go [TS]

01:04:33   down below and scuttle the ship you will [TS]

01:04:36   receive the order of lenin you see the [TS]

01:04:39   old of lemon for this last shot or need [TS]

01:04:43   them i've got five orders of Lenin [TS]

01:04:44   already Tim Curry ladies and gentlemen [TS]

01:04:46   are they they they take off in the in [TS]

01:04:49   the in the ship which we never really [TS]

01:04:52   see it go back down they know if we can [TS]

01:04:55   just wear designer fire firing shots [TS]

01:04:58   across its valve yes yes the destroyer [TS]

01:05:00   that is it and they and they they [TS]

01:05:02   actually launched a torpedo yes so it [TS]

01:05:05   launched a torpedo and it there's a [TS]

01:05:07   there's a sonar guy or a torpedo guy who [TS]

01:05:09   is counting down the distance and about [TS]

01:05:11   50 feet 50 meters to impact and we need [TS]

01:05:14   meanwhile they flipped open a button and [TS]

01:05:16   there's a hand hovering over the button [TS]

01:05:18   and when it gets to like 50 50 yards or [TS]

01:05:20   something in the hand hits it pan up it [TS]

01:05:24   explodes not anywhere near you know 50 [TS]

01:05:26   50 yards away from the Red October pan [TS]

01:05:28   up james earl jones he says officer that [TS]

01:05:32   hit the whole of the Red October and I [TS]

01:05:34   would never hear and apparently all you [TS]

01:05:37   need to lie for the rest of your life is [TS]

01:05:40   james earl jones voice and a CIA ID yeah [TS]

01:05:43   it takes I think so [TS]

01:05:44   badge well obviously James Earl Jones [TS]

01:05:46   read the opening credits where it said [TS]

01:05:49   this never happened [TS]

01:05:51   it's just passing he wrote the opening [TS]

01:05:53   credits my mind Maya my notes as though [TS]

01:05:56   James Earl Jones you're right out of [TS]

01:05:57   sneakers here huh [TS]

01:05:59   someone who can make a deal but they [TS]

01:06:01   bring Jeffrey Jones along on that [TS]

01:06:03   missing which I always thought was kind [TS]

01:06:05   of weird SRV guy [TS]

01:06:08   yeah well that's it is that this is the [TS]

01:06:10   setup is the DSRV we saw earlier the [TS]

01:06:12   deep sea rescue vehicle that can that [TS]

01:06:14   can connect to any sub-link wink nod and [TS]

01:06:18   so they've the USS dallas now has that [TS]

01:06:20   and they go to the to connect to the to [TS]

01:06:24   the Red October and and open the hatch [TS]

01:06:28   I love they knock on it with the hand me [TS]

01:06:30   that hammer big heavy hand on ya [TS]

01:06:33   can you imagine being in the Red October [TS]

01:06:34   and all of a sudden you hear that on the [TS]

01:06:36   outside know me i would assume that they [TS]

01:06:38   saw on sonar this little you know [TS]

01:06:40   mini-sub coming out them but God that [TS]

01:06:43   would freak me out like how do you to [TS]

01:06:44   have the faith to open an outer port [TS]

01:06:47   hole into the ocean as far as I don't [TS]

01:06:49   think you could even open it [TS]

01:06:51   that's right the pressure will probably [TS]

01:06:53   prevent you but yeah it's free i love [TS]

01:06:54   that guy to he's like hello americans [TS]

01:06:56   this is not so that which means here [TS]

01:06:59   here come and this is a nice tense [TS]

01:07:01   moment where they're going through now [TS]

01:07:02   it's American military guys on a Soviet [TS]

01:07:04   submarine which is super weird and [TS]

01:07:06   creepy and there's nobody on the [TS]

01:07:07   submarine because they've gotten all the [TS]

01:07:08   people off of it except for the except [TS]

01:07:11   for the saboteurs it turns out in the [TS]

01:07:13   officers and to get that the bridge is [TS]

01:07:15   like around the corner from the ladder [TS]

01:07:17   from the from the the porthole so it's [TS]

01:07:20   all it's all very close it's not it's [TS]

01:07:21   not that that that far that they have to [TS]

01:07:23   walk but suddenly they're on the bridge [TS]

01:07:25   with Sean Connery and Sam Neill and all [TS]

01:07:27   these other officers and it's like it's [TS]

01:07:29   awkward and I love they're all sort of [TS]

01:07:31   frozen the good engineers taking the [TS]

01:07:33   radiation alarm down is just kind of [TS]

01:07:35   staring at them like hey so I like it I [TS]

01:07:38   like this is where I like this little [TS]

01:07:40   like oh where are my manners i actually [TS]

01:07:42   turn off this alarm [TS]

01:07:44   yeah can I have a cigarette even though [TS]

01:07:47   he said multiple times that he doesn't [TS]

01:07:48   yeah and they all turned green [TS]

01:07:50   yep this is the Russians like this when [TS]

01:07:52   you do this also make fun of him but but [TS]

01:07:56   in the end right but in the end that [TS]

01:07:58   brings them all together and finally [TS]

01:07:59   Sean Connery says my all my officers and [TS]

01:08:01   I request asylum it's actually a nice [TS]

01:08:03   back-and-forth where where Brian reveals [TS]

01:08:05   that he speaks Russian and andreas [TS]

01:08:07   reveals that he speaks English because [TS]

01:08:09   they have reverted to Russian here [TS]

01:08:11   because now we've got English speakers [TS]

01:08:12   in the in the in the sub but it's a nice [TS]

01:08:14   a nice little connection there in that [TS]

01:08:16   because there's this question well what [TS]

01:08:18   do you say to somebody who has just [TS]

01:08:20   handed a Soviet sub to you and is [TS]

01:08:23   defecting little awkward how do you [TS]

01:08:24   break the ice there and they work on it [TS]

01:08:26   for a couple minutes [TS]

01:08:27   yes I i enjoy as he makes him sit down [TS]

01:08:31   at the [TS]

01:08:32   on there and then it's like you said you [TS]

01:08:35   write books and it's like oh I know this [TS]

01:08:38   but I know that you're gonna push it all [TS]

01:08:41   yeah ballsy acted stupidly yeah yeah but [TS]

01:08:45   the reason he's sitting at the car in [TS]

01:08:46   the first place is because they hear a [TS]

01:08:48   torpedo buzz them and our sonar survival [TS]

01:08:51   floors [TS]

01:08:51   yeah that that that pitch was too high [TS]

01:08:54   torpedoes Russian imagine that still [TS]

01:08:56   firing on us no no pitch was too high [TS]

01:08:58   don't knows jones he knows also they [TS]

01:09:01   figure everyone kind of runs to a [TS]

01:09:03   station make they can do something with [TS]

01:09:04   and radius like you guys said you know [TS]

01:09:07   says to Ryan well you know what do you [TS]

01:09:09   do when nice as well i'm just an analyst [TS]

01:09:11   with the CIA [TS]

01:09:12   whatever just say I yeah and I also love [TS]

01:09:16   that that Ramos is ever the teacher when [TS]

01:09:19   he tells Ryan to increase the speed to [TS]

01:09:22   flank or whatever it is I'm he'd say you [TS]

01:09:25   know how do i turn the knob and turn [TS]

01:09:26   that knob broke now all the controls are [TS]

01:09:28   presumably in Russian right so like that [TS]

01:09:30   is probably all those Ryan knows russian [TS]

01:09:32   yeah maybe you can figure out but he's [TS]

01:09:33   not a you know it's not a non-violent [TS]

01:09:35   know the point I'm trying to make though [TS]

01:09:37   is that your radius was within three [TS]

01:09:39   inches of the Damned of the of the crank [TS]

01:09:43   that needed to be cranked he could just [TS]

01:09:44   turn the lever but no even this fairly [TS]

01:09:47   urgent situation where they know another [TS]

01:09:49   torpedoes imminently coming at them he [TS]

01:09:51   says to rhino this is what you need to [TS]

01:09:53   do is ever the teacher always [TS]

01:09:55   instructing right just like he could [TS]

01:09:57   have had mancuso attack and stick [TS]

01:09:58   probably notice how to drop its that is [TS]

01:10:01   true but not the writer don't have a guy [TS]

01:10:04   who writes the books there especially [TS]

01:10:06   the one who is wrong about Halsey to [TS]

01:10:08   yeah well and then we have and then we [TS]

01:10:09   have a very sad scene our saboteur start [TS]

01:10:12   should have never published up shoots up [TS]

01:10:13   the silly shoves Ramos other way and [TS]

01:10:15   takes a bullet in the chest and what [TS]

01:10:17   would have liked to have done before he [TS]

01:10:19   died I would like to like it easy on my [TS]

01:10:21   Nana oh so said very swinging it more [TS]

01:10:25   poignant that if he had said I would [TS]

01:10:26   have liked to have two wives in Montana [TS]

01:10:28   I was looking forward to eating all [TS]

01:10:31   those Rapids yeah that would actually [TS]

01:10:35   are stepping over the part where radius [TS]

01:10:37   turns into the torpedo which right [TS]

01:10:39   especially as a United when you're doing [TS]

01:10:42   so much conversation right right exactly [TS]

01:10:44   yes [TS]

01:10:45   sometimes he turned into the torpedo of [TS]

01:10:47   course mancuso is crapping himself and [TS]

01:10:50   radius is so confident that he's just [TS]

01:10:52   carrying on this very nonchalant [TS]

01:10:53   conversation about what books writings [TS]

01:10:55   written threat but well I tell you what [TS]

01:10:56   especially as a kid when I saw this I [TS]

01:10:58   wasn't there are turning into the [TS]

01:11:00   torpedo what are they doing like they're [TS]

01:11:01   gonna die what's wrong with these people [TS]

01:11:03   and I was freaking out in it's a really [TS]

01:11:06   clever seen especially for someone like [TS]

01:11:08   I don't know how the hell torpedoes work [TS]

01:11:10   and how all this really works and not [TS]

01:11:12   knowing any better about the range and [TS]

01:11:14   all that radius knows how Soviet [TS]

01:11:18   torpedoes are armed and knows that if he [TS]

01:11:20   closes the gap he can he can hit it with [TS]

01:11:24   his giant submarine before its armed and [TS]

01:11:27   smash it and it won't be able to impact [TS]

01:11:29   him but he also knows that tuple of will [TS]

01:11:32   not make the same mistake twice [TS]

01:11:33   indeed indeed which makes two loves next [TS]

01:11:38   thing even more dangerous [TS]

01:11:40   so sam neill dies there's gonna there's [TS]

01:11:42   the gun there's they have to go after [TS]

01:11:44   the they have to go after the cook who [TS]

01:11:47   is it and so was who is broken into the [TS]

01:11:50   missile is where they keep the ICBMs [TS]

01:11:53   gonna try to blow up the the ICBMs and [TS]

01:11:56   blow up the ship basically and so Sean [TS]

01:11:58   Connery and alec baldwin go down there [TS]

01:12:00   we have a nice scene there were many [TS]

01:12:02   hands over control of the ships [TS]

01:12:04   captain's a captain you have the Conn he [TS]

01:12:06   says and then mancuso gives him his gun [TS]

01:12:08   which is that nice i like i like they're [TS]

01:12:10   kind of distrust worry distrusting of [TS]

01:12:12   each other first but this you know they [TS]

01:12:14   quickly established a rapport their [TS]

01:12:15   fellow submarine shelburne exactly and [TS]

01:12:18   so they i love that moment like you [TS]

01:12:19   might need this like handguns like he's [TS]

01:12:21   like well you know he's given Ryan this [TS]

01:12:23   gun earlier in when they're in the DSR [TS]

01:12:25   via and said like you know you're [TS]

01:12:27   willing to bet your life on the fact [TS]

01:12:29   that he's defecting he can't change his [TS]

01:12:30   mind and Brian sort of grudgingly accept [TS]

01:12:33   the pistol doesn't like yeah and but it [TS]

01:12:35   is a moment of like you you get the idea [TS]

01:12:37   like this guy still you know he's a [TS]

01:12:38   soldier right like he is prepared for [TS]

01:12:40   the eventualities that something goes [TS]

01:12:42   pear-shaped and is you know it's nice to [TS]

01:12:45   see him establish that trust like all [TS]

01:12:46   right we've got a common enemy and this [TS]

01:12:47   in the saboteur so they they go into the [TS]

01:12:50   missile silo and missile whatever and [TS]

01:12:53   Ramos gets popped in like the shoulder [TS]

01:12:55   whatever and he says to Ryan [TS]

01:12:57   you know be careful Ryan most things in [TS]

01:12:59   here don't react about the bones be [TS]

01:13:01   careful what you shoot that I'm yeah [TS]

01:13:02   most things in here don't react well to [TS]

01:13:04   bullets which of course he he runs and [TS]

01:13:06   is immediately shot like do you know [TS]

01:13:08   when i should have yeah yeah and so then [TS]

01:13:11   you get a set piece right where we're [TS]

01:13:13   Alec Baldwin is going up ladders and [TS]

01:13:14   along like catwalks and things can see [TS]

01:13:17   alluded to earlier we get to hear Alec [TS]

01:13:19   Baldwin doing his sean.conner yeah which [TS]

01:13:22   is pretty good job of the bullets yeah [TS]

01:13:24   like me I don't react open this is also [TS]

01:13:26   loved it also this is and john mctiernan [TS]

01:13:29   being the director this is the die-hard [TS]

01:13:31   portion of those of the movie to wear [TS]

01:13:33   where the way that that Alec Baldwin is [TS]

01:13:35   talking to himself and all of that it's [TS]

01:13:37   very reminiscent see so have some last [TS]

01:13:40   command post will scuttle the Sun yeah [TS]

01:13:42   this whole thing is very diehard right [TS]

01:13:44   after World War three right down to the [TS]

01:13:47   very the shot like when he basically [TS]

01:13:50   confronts the cook like the gunshot [TS]

01:13:53   sound i think is the exact same sound [TS]

01:13:55   when Reginald veljohnson shoots the [TS]

01:13:57   russian guy at the end die hard [TS]

01:13:59   it's like this big like brassy like [TS]

01:14:01   brandy and you don't even really see [TS]

01:14:03   what's happening you just are focused [TS]

01:14:05   because it's like looking at Ryan [TS]

01:14:06   shooting the gun and so it struck me is [TS]

01:14:09   that the shot composition and sound in [TS]

01:14:11   that scene is almost identical to the [TS]

01:14:14   end of diehard yeah [TS]

01:14:15   now meanwhile all this is going on [TS]

01:14:17   though is this just epic like three sub [TS]

01:14:20   skirmish yes we're where the tupolev is [TS]

01:14:23   removed all the safety precautions from [TS]

01:14:25   his from from his torpedoes fired a [TS]

01:14:28   torpedo fired a torpedo Jonesy [TS]

01:14:30   apparently can hear that when it becomes [TS]

01:14:32   active which is a little bit peculiar to [TS]

01:14:34   me late but whatever i don't understand [TS]

01:14:36   there's there's some fasteners playing [TS]

01:14:38   with us on an arrest right so anyway so [TS]

01:14:41   there's this active torpedo that goes [TS]

01:14:43   chasing after the red red october and [TS]

01:14:45   all the sudden the USS Dallas comes out [TS]

01:14:47   of nowhere with the executive officer do [TS]

01:14:50   first officer commanding it and they [TS]

01:14:52   decide to get in between the torpedo and [TS]

01:14:55   the Red October and then next thing you [TS]

01:14:58   know what do they do they go reaching [TS]

01:15:00   for the sky they launch countermeasures [TS]

01:15:02   and then do the full blow which is which [TS]

01:15:05   is so amazing and [TS]

01:15:07   and watching that clip of whatever sub [TS]

01:15:10   it was and it looks real to me so I'm [TS]

01:15:13   assuming USS Houston that it's a great [TS]

01:15:16   shot where where the where the big the [TS]

01:15:18   USS Enterprise right in the foreground [TS]

01:15:20   there's a door the big the big US ship [TS]

01:15:22   the one that would that would come for [TS]

01:15:23   the the officer Bruins yeah yeah that's [TS]

01:15:27   what is it that damage on the enterprise [TS]

01:15:29   is a foreground you know it's the one [TS]

01:15:30   where they're going to pick up the [TS]

01:15:31   Russian crew and then in the background [TS]

01:15:33   you see the the sub blow which is really [TS]

01:15:36   great and then they all shout the [TS]

01:15:37   captain scared them out of the water you [TS]

01:15:38   look at it because they're still rooting [TS]

01:15:40   for their captain who has lied to them [TS]

01:15:42   so said but the torpedo is still active [TS]

01:15:45   searching for another time searching for [TS]

01:15:47   another target and this is that this is [TS]

01:15:48   the moment where the guy who warned [TS]

01:15:50   tupolev not to met monkey around with [TS]

01:15:53   the rrod activate the the safety [TS]

01:15:56   measures of the sub on the torpedoes in [TS]

01:15:59   homes in on tupolev sub and exploded in [TS]

01:16:02   a giant explosion that makes the sailors [TS]

01:16:05   up top sad because they think that their [TS]

01:16:06   and you get the wily coyote look that [TS]

01:16:08   students carts card games as you say for [TS]

01:16:11   we get asked you don't want us [TS]

01:16:14   mmhmm yeah you did i tell you what a [TS]

01:16:17   great like really awesome climax to a [TS]

01:16:19   movie and I mean not to say this is the [TS]

01:16:21   best one ever but oh I everytime i watch [TS]

01:16:23   this I get all worked up what yo [TS]

01:16:25   not that i don't know how it's going to [TS]

01:16:27   end but seeing all this dancing between [TS]

01:16:29   the three subs and how they work this [TS]

01:16:31   out i just think it's fantastic and I [TS]

01:16:33   don't remember the details of how it [TS]

01:16:35   worked in the book but I remember [TS]

01:16:36   thinking to myself the book actually did [TS]

01:16:38   it even better which don't confuse as go [TS]

01:16:40   as a complaint about the movie not at [TS]

01:16:42   all i'm not trying to be that guy [TS]

01:16:44   I think the movie did it brilliantly and [TS]

01:16:46   and I wouldn't have had it any other way [TS]

01:16:47   but the book and I think one of the subs [TS]

01:16:50   like runs into the other something like [TS]

01:16:51   that it was it is even more absurd and [TS]

01:16:53   ridiculous but I loved every second of [TS]

01:16:56   it [TS]

01:16:56   well you know a big a lot of modern [TS]

01:16:58   action movies make the mistake of having [TS]

01:17:00   the end be about big explosions and [TS]

01:17:02   stuff and the nice thing about this [TS]

01:17:04   movie is it is the combination is the [TS]

01:17:06   big stew you've got the emotional beats [TS]

01:17:08   of these two of the of these two arch [TS]

01:17:11   enemies working together in on the on [TS]

01:17:15   the bridge of the Red October and also [TS]

01:17:18   with radius and Jack Ryan down trying to [TS]

01:17:20   stop [TS]

01:17:20   the the the saboteur that's all [TS]

01:17:23   happening along with this bigger game [TS]

01:17:27   that has this that you know that between [TS]

01:17:29   the three different subs and all [TS]

01:17:31   intercut together so you've got ya [TS]

01:17:33   you're getting your emotional beats and [TS]

01:17:35   you're investing these characters and [TS]

01:17:36   you've got this crazy thing with the the [TS]

01:17:38   the the torpedo zipping around and to [TS]

01:17:41   left gets what was coming to him but [TS]

01:17:44   it's a great little combination of all [TS]

01:17:45   of those things happening that makes it [TS]

01:17:46   so dramatic i think so cut to [TS]

01:17:48   duplicitous Russian ambassador talking [TS]

01:17:51   to our our national security advisors [TS]

01:17:54   lady hero of the movie today yeah [TS]

01:17:56   terrible tragedy mr. ambassador terrible [TS]

01:17:59   tragedy and then we get the moment of [TS]

01:18:01   like oh by the way we lost another one [TS]

01:18:03   of our submarines you lost another [TS]

01:18:05   else's memory with the dramatic like [TS]

01:18:08   looking down over his glasses yeah [TS]

01:18:10   because I mean they're just like a lie [TS]

01:18:12   out of her eyes now they've run out of [TS]

01:18:14   lies [TS]

01:18:15   so many lies it doesn't even make sense [TS]

01:18:17   anymore and john saxon totally just that [TS]

01:18:20   her hair expert analysis at exactly [TS]

01:18:26   yeah it's a great mobile where because [TS]

01:18:27   this is it this way well that's the deep [TS]

01:18:28   part of the ocean of it was exploded so [TS]

01:18:31   perhaps one day there will be technology [TS]

01:18:33   to tell us what really happened [TS]

01:18:35   perhaps perhaps eats candy cut to the [TS]

01:18:39   penobscot river main man this is not my [TS]

01:18:43   favorite ending to the movies yeah maybe [TS]

01:18:45   this scene never happened as far as I'm [TS]

01:18:48   concerned my much like the beginning of [TS]

01:18:50   the movie when they tell us never [TS]

01:18:51   happened [TS]

01:18:52   dad already mentioned the matting [TS]

01:18:53   problem but you also is not not good not [TS]

01:18:57   good [TS]

01:18:57   I mean I i think i would have preferred [TS]

01:19:00   it if it ended with the belt scene but I [TS]

01:19:02   feel like if that had been the ending [TS]

01:19:04   the movie then I would be lamenting that [TS]

01:19:05   it didn't really do didn't put the [TS]

01:19:08   period on the end with we can almost [TS]

01:19:09   count to Jack flying home on the plane [TS]

01:19:12   but i also agree that you don't really [TS]

01:19:13   get me [TS]

01:19:14   it does feel like you need something [TS]

01:19:15   with radius and Ryan because they spent [TS]

01:19:17   the whole movie apart sounds like a [TS]

01:19:18   rom-com they spent the whole man finally [TS]

01:19:20   they got together [TS]

01:19:21   yeah but it could have been like Ryan by [TS]

01:19:23   andreas a donut or something right [TS]

01:19:25   okay okay we're just taking them to [TS]

01:19:28   Montana I don't know [TS]

01:19:29   yeah what isn't in one of the later tom [TS]

01:19:32   clancy books [TS]

01:19:34   Jack Ryan calls on his friend mark [TS]

01:19:36   Raymond to come and advise him on [TS]

01:19:37   something and it's it's raining this [TS]

01:19:39   yeah i think was that Cardinal the [TS]

01:19:41   chrome yeah he's living under it is [TS]

01:19:42   assumed the only time he appears again [TS]

01:19:44   happy because crappy assumed name but so [TS]

01:19:46   you need something and i get y is short [TS]

01:19:47   and all that you want to you want to [TS]

01:19:49   communicate that they've got their [TS]

01:19:50   parking at somewhere and I guess I get [TS]

01:19:52   it it's fine it doesn't it doesn't hate [TS]

01:19:54   that scene but it is it is tying a tie [TS]

01:19:57   about wanted here with the little [TS]

01:19:58   revolution now and then I mean this is [TS]

01:20:00   the leading into Gorbachev and the [TS]

01:20:02   dissolution of the Soviet Union and [TS]

01:20:04   welcome to the new world and all of that [TS]

01:20:06   you know it's and I'm not sure that's a [TS]

01:20:09   satisfying answer to why anyway I mean [TS]

01:20:11   if you have to ask I mean what's gonna [TS]

01:20:13   do say well I i find it immoral the [TS]

01:20:16   first strike capabilities nope we're not [TS]

01:20:17   going to do that so was it good was [TS]

01:20:19   going to say but after that scene though [TS]

01:20:22   we cut back to Jack Ryan he's asleep on [TS]

01:20:23   the plane you pan over another stuffed [TS]

01:20:27   bear john mctiernan another fair he [TS]

01:20:30   believed if you're tracing ing strain [TS]

01:20:32   bear i believe to yeah that's what I [TS]

01:20:35   dread as well and the weather outside is [TS]

01:20:37   that right technology said it's a Soviet [TS]

01:20:40   chorus shaking [TS]

01:20:42   yeah it snow let it snow let it snow [TS]

01:20:44   yeah now but I didn't think it was a [TS]

01:20:46   cute little nod to the beginning of the [TS]

01:20:49   movie were right as i go i never sleep [TS]

01:20:50   on plane touched our balance and yeah [TS]

01:20:52   he's been through so much over this last [TS]

01:20:54   three days presenting keep asking how [TS]

01:20:56   much he slept late friend yeah exactly [TS]

01:20:58   that he's just dead at this point so [TS]

01:21:01   that that ending I did care for it was [TS]

01:21:03   this this brilliant moment in that river [TS]

01:21:05   that that I i found a little wonky but [TS]

01:21:09   nonetheless god do i love this movie I [TS]

01:21:11   could you describe why I love this movie [TS]

01:21:14   so damn much [TS]

01:21:15   I just almost every scene in it Aida and [TS]

01:21:18   flags and neighborhood delivery service [TS]

01:21:21   delivers chills it if there's no dead [TS]

01:21:23   spots in the movie even though it's well [TS]

01:21:25   it's over two hours long yeah well [TS]

01:21:27   written there there's not a wasted seen [TS]

01:21:30   there's no audible dialogue we can say [TS]

01:21:33   that i didn't really care for tim kouris [TS]

01:21:35   performance but it's it's it's in that [TS]

01:21:37   campy kinda well who cares it's tim [TS]

01:21:40   curry and [TS]

01:21:41   write it there are not too many there [TS]

01:21:46   are not too many unforced errors in this [TS]

01:21:48   movie [TS]

01:21:49   well I think we've reached the end but [TS]

01:21:50   this has been a pleasurable discussion [TS]

01:21:52   about the hunt for red october if if you [TS]

01:21:54   are listening to this and you haven't [TS]

01:21:55   seen in awhile go watch it because it's [TS]

01:21:57   a lot of fun and if you haven't seen it [TS]

01:21:59   what the hell is wrong with ya why I see [TS]

01:22:01   this movie [TS]

01:22:02   yeah we've ruined it for you know we [TS]

01:22:03   have you can watch it again and again [TS]

01:22:04   and again [TS]

01:22:05   now it was just a dream we've ruined [TS]

01:22:07   nothing know you'll watch it with [TS]

01:22:08   greater understanding yes you will watch [TS]

01:22:11   it and like it [TS]

01:22:13   we're going to periscope depth and now [TS]
