Good evening and welcome to episode 574 of Connected on Relay. This episode is sponsored by Squarespace. I am your Ricky Benchman, Federico Vitici, and it's my pleasure to present on this episode Mr. Stephen Hackett. Hi, Stephen.
00:00:22
◼►
Hey. Wow, that was... It was so fast. It was incredible.
01:03:36
◼►
networking chips yeah yeah this this has
01:03:38
◼►
happened faster than i expected from when
01:03:41
◼►
they announced the 16e definitely yeah
01:03:43
◼►
yeah uh they also mentioned a couple of
01:03:46
◼►
things that i wanna that i wanna that i
01:03:47
◼►
wanted to note here uh uh we spoke about the
01:03:52
◼►
higher memory bandwidth that is also true on
01:03:55
◼►
the ipad of course with the m5 uh it's not
01:03:58
◼►
clear whether if and how that will benefit
01:04:01
◼►
ipad os 26 multitasking we'll have to see
01:04:04
◼►
um there's also faster uh they're also using pci pci e 5 speeds for the internal ssd so if you're
01:04:13
◼►
working with heavy files in things like logic or final cut you should see uh faster read uh times uh when you're working with that uh obviously that does not apply to external drives that's only for the internal ssd of the ipad
01:04:28
◼►
ipad but that's pretty much it really the story comes down to local ai gpu
01:04:35
◼►
improvements and wi-fi 7 because i don't think you're not supposed to see
01:04:40
◼►
differences uh for if anything should be better wi-fi should be slightly better
01:04:44
◼►
cellular connection should be slightly better and if you have an external display you can now do 4k at 120 hertz it reminds me this ipad reminds me a lot of the m2 ipad pro
01:04:56
◼►
another follow-up to a major update to the ipad pro series that followed up the following year
01:05:03
◼►
with uh very little changes except for the new chip and that's the same story here
01:05:09
◼►
yeah was that the one with the lidar no no no no the m2 was the one that that was 2022 i believe
01:05:20
◼►
and it was uh yeah i remember i had my embargo it was the ipad pro and the base model ipad with the
01:05:27
◼►
kickstand keyboard that won i think i'm thinking of the 2020 ipad pro that's right yeah yeah that was
01:05:34
◼►
the weird one before the m1 which was 2021 yeah i bought that one a12z about thinking a12z
01:05:40
◼►
and so i just had that and just think well this is this wasn't worth it but yeah this is this does it
01:05:46
◼►
does it does seem similar to that one right which which to be honest and to be fair we were not expecting
01:05:53
◼►
more right from this like the the the m4 ipad pro was a monumental update right like massive massive
01:06:02
◼►
update uh with the display and all the options like the nano texture and super thin super thin
01:06:09
◼►
very powerful new keyboard like this the expectation was this was what we were going to get but i do
01:06:18
◼►
think that there are some highlights there right like the wi-fi 7 and thread and bluetooth 6 that's
01:06:23
◼►
actually pretty nice like that those would be you would feel the effect of a bunch of those
01:06:30
◼►
technologies throughout your day even though you're not you don't know you are right and so i think i
01:06:35
◼►
think that's pretty cool that they're there and i do want to just quickly say the wi-fi 7 is not on the
01:06:42
◼►
other m5 products like the the new macbook pro is still wi-fi 6e because they're not using the n1 right
01:06:48
◼►
they're using i guess the broadcom chip or whatever they've because that would be wasted wouldn't it
01:06:53
◼►
the n1 no it would be because they have no cellular yeah oh wait no that's the c1x no that's the c1x
01:07:00
◼►
no why aren't they doing that because they don't need thread maybe or i mean maybe sure why not have
01:07:06
◼►
thread why does the ipad need thread nope no yeah nobody really knows in fact yeah i don't know maybe
01:07:12
◼►
maybe i'm sure it'll come in the future so um mike tell us about the vision pro thank you for the
01:07:20
◼►
uh so the vision pro gets the m5 but because it's upgrading from an n2 gets a it's a 50 faster speed
01:07:30
◼►
improvement um here's a really weird tidbit the m5 allows the vision pro to render 10 more pixels on
01:07:39
◼►
the micro led displays resulting in a clearer image an increased refresh rate up to 120 hertz
01:07:47
◼►
and a smoother mac virtual display experience now here is my guess what the 10 more pixels thing means
01:07:56
◼►
and i would love some detail i think it's talking about the foveated rendering yeah okay i was in some
01:08:04
◼►
reddit threads where people were speculating about this some people were saying it's the
01:08:09
◼►
foveated rendering the rendering more some people are saying no it's actually they they are increasing
01:08:15
◼►
the resolution because they're saying that the text is crisper on screen so it is unclear that is the
01:08:22
◼►
kind of question that somebody should ask pr about it yeah i think this is foveated rendering
01:08:26
◼►
like 10 more pixels like there's not like hidden a hidden part of the screen and like no that's that's
01:08:33
◼►
what because it says resulting in a clearer image like the clearness is what is around you that's my
01:08:41
◼►
guess if anybody wants to correct me or we end up finding out that would be awesome um but that that's
01:08:48
◼►
what i would expect it's it's that 10 more but even then it's like 50 faster chip 10 more rendering shows
01:08:55
◼►
how like how intense that is uh and up to 120 hours refresh rate is great i didn't know it didn't do
01:09:02
◼►
that i don't know what the refresh rate is of the of the m2 one but uh there you go uh an increased
01:09:09
◼►
battery it was funny to me to read that this is up to two and a half hours of regular use
01:09:16
◼►
like i don't know if i've forgotten what the vision pro's battery life is like
01:09:21
◼►
but an increase from what you know it's like wow 2.5 hours that is not a lot that is not a lot
01:09:31
◼►
to be honest all of the no a lot of the interesting stuff here is actually what's not this
01:09:39
◼►
like it's like the accessories are are interesting um the the vision pro going to an m5 chip fine like
01:09:48
◼►
the the the it means that the current hardware will live longer which is i guess the the intention
01:09:53
◼►
here you know so we will you know this unit will be out people that are buying this unit they're going
01:09:58
◼►
going to get multiple years of use out of this product this i would love to be proven wrong but
01:10:04
◼►
this does not feel like a product that is worth upgrading to for basically anyone that already owns
01:10:10
◼►
one um if you do want one now there's a bit of a better improvement for you um if you want to buy one
01:10:17
◼►
now uh i i don't see what the user benefit would be it's it's like ipads right where like
01:10:25
◼►
you shouldn't upgrade your ipad every year i mean it can be argued you should never upgrade any
01:10:32
◼►
product every year but like i feel like an an argument can be made for the iphone but with the
01:10:37
◼►
ipad like you know you the ipad is always more powerful than the the experience that it's powering
01:10:45
◼►
right so you can get many years out of an ipad and i feel like that's the same for the vision pro
01:10:49
◼►
even though that is so cutting it is so cutting edge there's just not enough stuff going on the
01:10:55
◼►
platform that makes it worthy of a of an upgrade even though it's not year over year like it's been
01:11:00
◼►
many years yeah and the the price is part of that too right i mean iphones are expensive but they're
01:11:07
◼►
not vision pro expensive well especially when they're not offering any trade-in yeah the mt vision pro
01:11:13
◼►
that is brutal like yes apple the vision pro customer is in some ways your best customer
01:11:21
◼►
right like they're they want the cutting edge they're willing to spend big bucks on something
01:11:25
◼►
that is effectively experimental and you're saying we will not give you anything on trade-in on that
01:11:32
◼►
is really harsh to your probably your biggest fans and your most engaged users i just i cannot believe it
01:11:43
◼►
yeah like i think the the the the quote-unquote reasons i've read is that like people like um
01:11:49
◼►
refurbishment companies don't want this stuff uh which i is fine like whatever it did remind so we
01:11:56
◼►
are um we do it i'm doing a trade-in uh on my iphone and to get credit we're going to use it to buy
01:12:03
◼►
to upgrade adina's iphone i always i have forgotten i feel like i knew this but i've forgotten that like
01:12:08
◼►
you're not giving it to apple it like goes to a company right like apple works with a bunch of
01:12:15
◼►
partners yeah like we're doing the mail-in it's going to a third-party company like apple doesn't
01:12:21
◼►
actually do the trade-ins so here at least um i traded in mary's iphone 15 i got her a 17 i got the
01:12:29
◼►
17 in store you don't take the trade into the store you they mail you the box or whatever and mine
01:12:34
◼►
did go to apple so it may be just different in different areas but yeah ultimately interesting
01:12:39
◼►
ultimately i think uh apple's not in the refurbishing business like even if it's going to
01:12:45
◼►
even if i mailed it to like quote unquote apple someone else is handling i don't think it went to
01:12:50
◼►
them handling it but like my point is you know say it's here maybe it's in some places in the states
01:12:55
◼►
it's different or whatever but i think that apple should just take these and give people a discount
01:13:01
◼►
and then they just have to deal with the situation of like recycling it or whatever because i just
01:13:06
◼►
think to not do anything not even like a token amount like five hundred dollars or something like
01:13:11
◼►
it's a it's it's a it's bad um the accessories
01:13:17
◼►
they made the solo top yeah they have a new band called the dual knit band it is just two
01:13:24
◼►
of the solo knit bands kind of kind of merged together yeah there is something interesting
01:13:31
◼►
here so it just has one of the adjustment knobs but you can like pull it out a little bit like on a
01:13:38
◼►
like a crown on a watch to like set the date and then it adjusts the top band so when i first saw it i was
01:13:44
◼►
like oh this isn't going to work because i don't want the tightness on top and behind to be the same but
01:13:49
◼►
it does allow you to adjust them independently which is good that is some good design right there
01:13:56
◼►
yeah because the solo top thing which is what i have somewhere for my vision pro is you have two
01:14:02
◼►
adjustment knobs because it's two of those solo knit things just like 3d printed together
01:14:07
◼►
yeah that's really nice hmm yeah um there's something here somebody putting on notes about
01:14:14
◼►
people freaking out about the weight yeah what is that i haven't seen this anywhere i saw it some on
01:14:22
◼►
um uh i think on mastodon so apple on their on the previous vision pro said that the m2 weighed
01:14:31
◼►
between 600 and 650 grams now why is there a range well it depends on your the strap you're using
01:14:40
◼►
the size of the light seal and like the face forming thing right like if if people are forgotten because
01:14:47
◼►
it's been a long time the vision pro is super customizable right they have different sizes of
01:14:52
◼►
all the sort of the attachments and that can the weight can change according to that apple says the m5
01:14:58
◼►
vision pro weight is between 750 and 800 grams um and so on the surface of it you're like apple the
01:15:04
◼►
one thing you need to do is make the vision pro lighter you made it heavier uh it seems like that's
01:15:09
◼►
not the case at all the vision pro itself like the metal glass thing seems like it's going to weigh the
01:15:16
◼►
same but it's the band because you have that top strap right that it's adding some weight there
01:15:24
◼►
uh that's not confirmed right because like these things aren't in the wild yet but it seems like
01:15:29
◼►
that's what it is it's not that they added more aluminum and glass to the front of something that
01:15:33
◼►
was already too heavy but i suspect whenever reviews come out that we'll get to the bottom of this uh
01:15:40
◼►
then yeah because that's the only strap you get now yeah they got rid of the other one but they you
01:15:48
◼►
can still buy them but in the box you get the jewel knit you don't get the two because you used to get
01:15:55
◼►
two right used to get the solo knit and the jewel loop and now you just get the jewel knit yeah which is
01:16:02
◼►
the way to go i think it's it's a great improvement uh did you see i think it was i think it was christian
01:16:08
◼►
uh on mastodon had like i can't wait for the the vision pro hat and it was like a photoshop of like
01:16:15
◼►
a whole beanie right made out of that material very good very good and then the psvr 2 controller
01:16:25
◼►
i don't play games what what's happening here so playstation vr is a vr headset 2 is the second
01:16:32
◼►
edition um they they have controllers for that which are apparently very good controllers
01:16:37
◼►
uh and apple added support for these um it's 250 for the pair i think it includes the charging station
01:16:46
◼►
uh sony's making their money back uh on the psvr 2 by charging a immense amount of money uh for these
01:16:54
◼►
controllers for essentially what seems to be maybe four games that support them like yeah this is this is
01:17:01
◼►
like if the yes this is uh zoe said in discord the whole playstation vr 2 was 399
01:17:07
◼►
there's no way an entire vr headset what's like 150 dollars something it's like oh that's the
01:17:15
◼►
that's the cheap part um uh this is it the if the vision pro is a chicken and egg problem for development
01:17:24
◼►
the games supporting the psvr 2 controllers on the vision like that is a that is a subset of a subset
01:17:37
◼►
of a subset of a purchase it's gonna be what two games maybe i think apple quoted four three or four
01:17:45
◼►
in the press four okay um it was like a ping pong game i think a pickleball game and and something
01:17:50
◼►
else but yeah i mean i am happy that this exists what i want to what i will be intrigued to see
01:17:58
◼►
is like can what can be done outside of games if anything with this like i don't know um and there's
01:18:05
◼►
also the this is shown off at i'm gonna say wwdc the logitech muse it is a um like a a 3d space apple
01:18:16
◼►
pencil essentially that's also available now i tasked david sparks to order one and review it for us
01:18:22
◼►
so uh which he did um because he he's using the vision pro uh quite a bit i think maybe more than
01:18:29
◼►
anyone else in our circle so excited to hear what that's like um and it's also interesting
01:18:34
◼►
right apple at the beginning was like you just need your hands like no like these products need
01:18:38
◼►
game controllers they need other things and i'm glad that they've come around to that yep
01:18:43
◼►
so that's the m5 product line um apple's probably done for the year but if you know we'll see how it
01:18:52
◼►
goes i know everyone's very excited um look i know spec bumps really aren't that uh spicy to talk
01:18:59
◼►
about or cover but i think the big story is like apple silicon is still just marching right on five
01:19:05
◼►
years in and that's uh that's encouraging anything else cool well let's uh let's shut this thing down
01:19:14
