00:01:35 ◼   ► So all Saturday all Sunday, all like that would just every every, you know,

00:01:44 ◼   ► I had a very wide search radius that covered twelve different Apple stores.

00:01:50 ◼   ► Like and it it after living like that for, you know, forty eight hours

00:01:56 ◼   ► and continual failures, I finally got one.

00:02:04 ◼   ► For uh after tax, thirty four hundred dollars.

00:02:28 ◼   ► of course like the every day the answer was nope, sorry nope, sorry, nope,

00:02:32 ◼   ► Um meanwhile, I go to pick up this phone and it's a business expense

00:02:44 ◼   ► So the first thing I ask is like, hey, w as I'm picking it

00:10:23 ◼   ► Um but also it is a very, very difficult phone to use one handed.

00:10:28 ◼   ► And the the kind of lifestyle I have, first of all, I keep it

00:10:32 ◼   ► in a pocket.

00:10:32 ◼   ► As I mentioned last episode, I think if you keep it in a bag,

00:10:35 ◼   ► it's substantially more compelling, but if you keep it in a pocket, it's it's

00:10:39 ◼   ► gonna feel more burdensome because it's just so much heavier.

00:10:41 ◼   ► Um unless you were already a Pro Max user, uh in which case go

00:10:45 ◼   ► ahead because that's about the same weight.

00:10:46 ◼   ► But if you were just a regular pro user, it's gonna feel really heavy

00:10:48 ◼   ► to you.

00:10:49 ◼   ► Um one one-handed use, if you just wanna like quickly take it out of

00:10:52 ◼   ► a pocket, do something and put it back in, that is really not what

00:10:56 ◼   ► this phone is made for.

00:10:57 ◼   ► It this phone will fight you on that.

00:10:59 ◼   ► Um and you're carrying around a big brick for that privilege.

00:11:02 ◼   ► I I'm definitely afraid I'm gonna drop it but also I don't want to

00:11:06 ◼   ► put a case on it because that would make it even bigger and bulkier.

00:11:09 ◼   ► Um that being said, I did get to play with the Apple folio case,

00:11:12 ◼   ► the one with the kickstand and the and the front cover on the screen.

00:11:15 ◼   ► It felt very nice, and I saw somebody online who just cut it on

00:11:20 ◼   ► its on its spine, so it was only the back half, which that's you

00:11:24 ◼   ► know, a hundred thirty dollar thing to to cut, but that honestly looked pretty

00:11:29 ◼   ► good and I think would actually improve the grip substantially without too much bulk

00:11:32 ◼   ► and the kickstand would be useful.

00:11:33 ◼   ► So if I carried a duo, I think I would probably try that.

00:11:37 ◼   ► But ultimately it feels like I'm gonna drop it.

00:11:40 ◼   ► I don't I think the ergonomics of it are all wrong for me.

00:11:43 ◼   ► And that's not to say it's wrong for everybody, but I think it's wrong

00:11:46 ◼   ► for me.

00:11:47 ◼   ► That being said,

00:11:49 ◼   ► I also am tempted to try it because

00:11:53 ◼   ► it is fun.

00:11:55 ◼   ► It reminds me in many ways of the very first MacBook Air, which everyone

00:12:01 ◼   ► rags on because it was really slow and it did overheat, and the SSD

00:12:05 ◼   ► was stupidly priced and slower.

00:12:07 ◼   ► But I had that first MacBook.

00:12:09 ◼   ► Air, and I loved it, even though at times I hated it.

00:12:13 ◼   ► And I think I think it might also evoke similar feelings as the the

00:12:16 ◼   ► twelve inch MacBook.

00:12:17 ◼   ► That was a computer that was very frustrating in a lot of ways, but

00:12:19 ◼   ► also people did love it in other ways.

00:12:22 ◼   ► And I think what the duo is doing, it's putting a lot of novelty

00:12:27 ◼   ► and fun into the iPhone, which has has gotten pretty boring.

00:12:32 ◼   ► And not to say that that's bad, but the iPhone is just a very

00:12:34 ◼   ► mature product, you know, the regular, you know, slab phone.

00:12:37 ◼   ► It's a very mature product.

00:12:39 ◼   ► It doesn't change that frequently or in very big ways.

00:12:42 ◼   ► We've had the same thing forever.

00:12:44 ◼   ► It it very much feels like like a foundation of our technology lives.

00:12:48 ◼   ► It just never changes.

00:12:49 ◼   ► This changes it in a big way.

00:12:52 ◼   ► People are doing fun stuff.

00:12:53 ◼   ► People are having fun with it.

00:12:55 ◼   ► So I think if you look at it rationally, almost no one should buy

00:13:00 ◼   ► this thing.

00:13:01 ◼   ► But sometimes you can do things for irrational reasons.

00:13:04 ◼   ► Sometimes you can buy something because it's fun.

00:13:06 ◼   ► And sometimes being on the cutting edge of something has a lot of sharp

00:13:10 ◼   ► edges and downside.

00:13:12 ◼   ► Um and I think this is one of those times that this phone, if

00:13:16 ◼   ► you want to live with this phone as your phone, there's gonna be days

00:13:19 ◼   ► where you regret that choice.

00:13:21 ◼   ► It's also so different and new and exciting and fun that I think many

00:13:27 ◼   ► people will choose to take that trade-off.

00:13:30 ◼   ► And I don't know that I will, but I am honestly tempted just for

00:13:35 ◼   ► the fun alone.

00:13:36 ◼   ► But boy is it heavy and awkward and lots of other lots of other

00:13:41 ◼   ► challenges.

00:13:43 ◼   ► Riding writing with it on the with a pencil on the table is useless.

00:13:51 ◼   ► Yeah, yeah.

00:13:52 ◼   ► It there's there's a lot of things that I thought would be great about

00:13:54 ◼   ► it that aren't but there's you know other stuff about it that I that

00:13:57 ◼   ► I wasn't that I didn't even know or realize, but that ends up being

00:13:59 ◼   ► kind of cool.

00:14:01 ◼   ► So it's fun to play with.

00:14:04 ◼   ► I don't again, I don't think it's gonna be for me, but I think

00:14:09 ◼   ► that that like having just a year of disrupted fun, just like that first

00:14:14 ◼   ► MacBook Air, even though we all knew its shortcomings, a lot of us still

00:14:19 ◼   ► bought it and used it and liked it a lot of the time.

00:14:21 ◼   ► That's what this is gonna be like for a lot of people.

00:14:24 ◼   ► And it's not that you are denying the shortcomings or blind to them.

00:14:29 ◼   ► No, we we see the shortcomings, we accept them, and we use it anyway.

00:14:33 ◼   ► That's what this kind of feeling is.

00:14:34 ◼   ► I think that's really largely going to happen with the duo.

00:14:36 ◼   ► It's already happening.

00:14:38 ◼   ► Um, but for a lot of people, including pr again, probably me, for a

00:14:42 ◼   ► lot of us, we're like, you know what, I my phone is not a

00:14:45 ◼   ► place where I want to have that level of disruption and the and the

00:14:48 ◼   ► fun's probably not worth it for me.

00:14:49 ◼   ► Um, but I'm glad it's there for the people who who decide differently on

00:14:55 ◼   ► Uh I've tried 'em out in the Apple store for a little while just

00:14:59 ◼   ► Uh it's an impressive piece of hardware Uh I would take one for free

00:18:18 ◼   ► should have used method you didn't use because I used it and it works

00:18:21 ◼   ► And a very popular one is hey, you guys used to do iTunes backup

00:18:24 ◼   ► and then you stop.

00:18:24 ◼   ► You should definitely do that.

00:18:26 ◼   ► So you're taking a tour of all the things.

00:18:28 ◼   ► Eventually you'll do an iCloud backup.

00:18:29 ◼   ► Although Marco's done iCloud backup too.

00:18:31 ◼   ► I think we have we have had iCloud backup represented in our cycle.

00:18:35 ◼   ► Here's the problem: like no matter which one we do, if it screws up,

00:18:39 ◼   ► that's our experience.

00:18:46 ◼   ► previous year.

00:19:08 ◼   ► What I should have done is unpaired my watch and then done the backup.

00:19:13 ◼   ► And so then when I restore the backup, I repair the watch.

00:19:18 ◼   ► And holy f that was a complete goddamn nightmare.

00:19:23 ◼   ► Getting my watch to go from one phone to the other ended up being

00:19:27 ◼   ► I had to unpair it from the old phone, repair it to the new

00:19:31 ◼   ► And then when I did that, what I ended up seeing after I did

00:19:34 ◼   ► a restore, which is what should have happened and everything looked like it should

00:19:38 ◼   ► But then I start, you know, it says your watch is restored, you're good

00:19:42 ◼   ► But then I go to use the watch and every app, including every system

00:19:46 ◼   ► app, except like settings and a couple, maybe one or one or two others,

00:19:50 ◼   ► every single app, including the system apps, is trying to download again, which I

00:19:56 ◼   ► assumed meant something was screwed up.

00:19:59 ◼   ► I later found out, nope, that's just how Apple Watch Restore works these days.

00:20:03 ◼   ► So again, some of this is on me for sure.

00:26:38 ◼   ► But if that same button does touch ID If that unlocked the phone, you'd

00:31:18 ◼   ► All those like you know, meta pens and stuff, it's you can get them

00:31:22 ◼   ► Um and and they don't have any kind of like pairing.

00:31:25 ◼   ► You just like bring it near it and it works, which so it's probably

00:31:27 ◼   ► using whatever mechanism the Logitech Crayon uses.

00:31:30 ◼   ► And that mechanism does not appear to exist or be enabled for the duo.

00:31:34 ◼   ► So for whatever it's worth, if if you were out there hoping to get

00:31:36 ◼   ► a cheaper stylus uh for your two thousand dollar phone, uh it's not gonna

00:31:40 ◼   ► happen, uh at least not yet.

00:31:41 ◼   ► So if you want a you know some kind of pencil, you gotta get

00:31:44 ◼   ► the actual Apple Pencil USB C.

00:31:46 ◼   ► That being said, the Apple Yeah, Puncil USB-C is pretty good.

00:31:49 ◼   ► And uh the only my only um slight complaint about it is that when

00:31:55 ◼   ► you first pick it up, if you haven't using it for a while, it

00:31:58 ◼   ► doesn't work immediately.

00:31:59 ◼   ► It has to like wake up and connect, I guess.

00:32:01 ◼   ► So if you pick it up real fast and start drawing on the on

00:32:04 ◼   ► the duo, the first few strokes might not actually register yet, um, which is

00:32:08 ◼   ► a little annoying, but I s you know, I understand why it has that

00:32:12 ◼   ► Uh but otherwise, using the using the Apple Pencil on both duo screens, it's

00:32:19 ◼   ► It works great with that one massive exception of the duo completely rocking on

00:32:26 ◼   ► a table so much that you cannot write with it on an on a

00:32:32 ◼   ► surface.

00:32:32 ◼   ► And no matter what case you get, I don't make a big enough difference

00:32:36 ◼   ► I'm sure people have cases that'll even that out, but without a case, yeah,

00:32:45 ◼   ► But then it would be ridiculous in a pocket.

00:33:19 ◼   ► Um I think the ergonomics of note taking on it are much better handheld

00:33:24 ◼   ► Um and if you want any other situation than handheld and portrait, you want

00:33:30 ◼   ► Coming back to the mat screen, um again, love it, love it, love it.

00:33:38 ◼   ► and I'm getting over, but was very it it put me off a lot

00:33:42 ◼   ► at first, um, is the camera on the inside screen, on the on the

00:33:48 ◼   ► The the camera that is under the display.

00:33:50 ◼   ► I find that to be fairly glaring.

00:33:52 ◼   ► I'm getting to get to the point that I can ignore it, but I

00:33:56 ◼   ► find that oftentimes, particularly in dark mode, um, it's pretty obvious where it is.

00:34:07 ◼   ► camera, the text that is under or I guess over the camera I should

00:34:11 ◼   ► say is fuzzier than all the text around it.

00:34:18 ◼   ► Um so that's a little bit frustrating.

00:34:25 ◼   ► Like it is nice to have nothing like no no clearly visible in well,

00:34:31 ◼   ► when things are great, it's nice to have nothing that you can see as

00:34:34 ◼   ► But then in in more circumstances than I expected, the inner cam or the

00:34:40 ◼   ► uh opened camera is the the front facing camera, the one that's under the

00:34:44 ◼   ► screen, I find that I see that far more than I expected and is

00:34:47 ◼   ► a little bit annoying.

00:34:49 ◼   ► Yeah they could have done hole punch in the upper right corner like so

00:34:51 ◼   ► many other uh Android foldables do and then they could have done the Apple

00:34:54 ◼   ► thing and just turned that circle into the dynamic island and sort of rejiggered

00:35:40 ◼   ► Anyways, if you look at the 17 Pro or equivalent keyboard, in the bottom

00:35:45 ◼   ► left-hand corner, for me anyway, the way I have it configured, the bottom left

00:35:48 ◼   ► hand corner is a little emoji icon.

00:35:50 ◼   ► And above that is the one, two, three to change your keyboard.

00:35:54 ◼   ► On the duo, the bottom left hand corner is one, two, three with a

00:35:58 ◼   ► little baby emoji one next to it.

00:36:02 ◼   ► As someone who has been known to use an emoji from time to time,

00:36:46 ◼   ► And if you have um a focus mode icon, or I guess a focus

00:36:51 ◼   ► Then you have that like combined battery Wi-Fi cell widget, which I also really

00:36:56 ◼   ► But if you have a live activity, it obviously is going to go into

00:37:01 ◼   ► And what it does is it shimmies everything on the right hand side of

00:37:06 ◼   ► But when you're lock screen, or excuse me, when you're apps, uh y it's

00:37:12 ◼   ► And I think some of that is that the software isn't a hundred percent

00:37:15 ◼   ► like the iOS software is a hundred percent locked in on this.

00:37:17 ◼   ► But live activities, especially if you're trying to do more than one, it's a

00:37:21 ◼   ► And I don't love that because I do love live activities.

00:37:25 ◼   ► I like it for timers, I like it for uh like a delivery or

00:37:35 ◼   ► Uh another nitpicky thing in Slack, they have uh updated Slack for the duo,

00:37:43 ◼   ► However, the gesture to go for the left-to-right swipe gesture that brings you back

00:37:48 ◼   ► don't no longer brings you back to your list of workspaces.

00:37:51 ◼   ► It used to be that if you kept swiping left far enough, you could

00:37:55 ◼   ► So the the relay slack, the incobbrable slack, you know, all these different slacks

00:37:59 ◼   ► Well, now I absolutely have to hit the button in the upper left-hand corner

00:46:28 ◼   ► are no longer allowed to pre buy an entire year of Apple Care which

00:46:34 ◼   ► And I looked at it and I did the thing that maybe I shouldn't,

00:46:37 ◼   ► but I took the fall and I did Apple Care Family.

00:46:40 ◼   ► So this is on it.

00:46:41 ◼   ► Like 15 devices are on Apple Care Family.

00:46:44 ◼   ► And it is also very expensive.

00:46:45 ◼   ► It's fifty dollars a month, but like the entire family is covered.

00:46:49 ◼   ► And given that we are starting to get the to the point that children

00:46:51 ◼   ► are going to have phones soon, it seemed like it was worth it.

00:46:54 ◼   ► And again, given that this alone would have been twenty dollars, I figured geez,

00:46:58 ◼   ► And I got a bunch of refunds.

00:47:00 ◼   ► Like I had just re-upped on the 17 pros for a year, an additional

00:47:03 ◼   ► year for each of them.

00:47:05 ◼   ► And I got a refund for almost all of that.

00:47:07 ◼   ► Um I got some Apple store gift Apple gift cards for a couple other

00:47:10 ◼   ► things that I had gotten um Apple Care on because I have I not

00:47:13 ◼   ► it wasn't exclusively phones but it was mostly phones.

00:47:15 ◼   ► Uh but now like Vision Pro is on this MacBook Pro stud I'm I'm

00:47:19 ◼   ► Studio display I believe is on it.

00:47:21 ◼   ► Or that might be too old now.

00:47:23 ◼   ► A bunch of stuff is on this and I am actually feeling pretty good

00:47:43 ◼   ► And so no case, uh, no pop socket, generally speaking.

00:50:22 ◼   ► So John, let's start and let's try to do this chronologically and we'll start

00:50:26 ◼   ► with this past Monday, which is the iPad mini.

00:50:28 ◼   ► Yeah, Apple releasing things on a series of days instead of one big event.

00:50:31 ◼   ► Sure, why not?

00:50:32 ◼   ► It gives you more time to make notes.

00:50:33 ◼   ► Uh the previous iPad menu was A17 Pro.

00:50:36 ◼   ► This one is an A20 Pro, which is a nice update.

00:50:40 ◼   ► It's about the same size, a little bit less heavy.

00:50:43 ◼   ► It's like 38 grams less to 34 grams less, depending on if you get

00:50:47 ◼   ► cellular.

00:50:48 ◼   ► Uh this kind of like the we're gonna see this in a lot of

00:50:50 ◼   ► products that we talk about today.

00:50:51 ◼   ► We say it's about the same size.

00:50:53 ◼   ► We're talking sub-millimeter differences in length, width, height, or maybe one or two millimeters.

00:50:59 ◼   ► Really weird that like they didn't make them exactly the same size, but they're

00:51:02 ◼   ► almost exactly the same size.

00:51:03 ◼   ► Storage is the same as the old model: 128, 256, 512.

00:51:07 ◼   ► Um, the A20 is an A20, but you get dinged some cores if you

00:51:13 ◼   ► get like again tied to random stuff.

00:51:14 ◼   ► It's tied to storage.

00:51:15 ◼   ► So if you get 128 and 256, gig storage, you get your down one

00:51:19 ◼   ► efficiency core and you get one fewer Neural engine.

00:51:22 ◼   ► So only one of the two Neural engines works, like the the A20 Pro

00:51:24 ◼   ► has two Neural engines, but you just get one if you don't get the

00:51:27 ◼   ► 512 gig model.

00:51:28 ◼   ► If you get the 512 gig you get all the cores working, which is

00:51:31 ◼   ► a bummer, but whatever.

00:51:32 ◼   ► Just be aware.

00:51:33 ◼   ► Um, the big story is that it's an OLED screen and it's eight point

00:51:36 ◼   ► five inch instead of the old one was eight point three.

00:51:38 ◼   ► They call it Super Retina XDR because they love long names for screens.

00:51:41 ◼   ► That'll also come up later.

00:51:43 ◼   ► 1200 nits peak HDR.

00:51:45 ◼   ► The previous one didn't have HDR at all.

00:51:46 ◼   ► And it's 600 nits SDR, which is up 100 nits from what it used

00:51:49 ◼   ► to be.

00:51:50 ◼   ► 25% or 24% thinner bezels.

00:51:53 ◼   ► And every time they make the bezels thinner on an iPad, I'm like so

00:51:56 ◼   ► much, this is just like impossible for me to pick up now.

00:51:58 ◼   ► Like I know they have the ch touch rejection or whatever, but wow, they're

00:52:01 ◼   ► they were already so small.

00:52:03 ◼   ► Anyway, it's 2316 by 1512, uh at 326 PPI.

00:52:07 ◼   ► The PPI is the same as the old model, but it is 50 pixels

00:52:10 ◼   ► wider and uh twenty four pixels higher.

00:52:13 ◼   ► Okay.

00:52:14 ◼   ► Sure, Apple.

00:52:15 ◼   ► Um it it does have nanotexture available, so I know Marco and many others

00:52:19 ◼   ► are super excited by that.

00:52:20 ◼   ► Uh it is an option on the two fifty six and five twelve only,

00:52:23 ◼   ► I think, which is weird.

00:52:24 ◼   ► Yes.

00:52:25 ◼   ► Market segmentation.

00:52:26 ◼   ► No promotion, 60 hertz only.

00:52:29 ◼   ► Uh and apparently it supports extended display mode when connected to an external display.

00:52:33 ◼   ► If you have iPad uh OS 27.2, and apparently this does not work on

00:52:38 ◼   ► the old minis, even with iPad OS 27.2, which is a bummer.

00:52:41 ◼   ► Uh it's got the N1 chip, which gives you Wi-Fi 67, Bluetooth 6, and

00:52:44 ◼   ► thread radio, C2 for cellular.

00:52:47 ◼   ► Um, so it's got all the latest Apple chips, uh, 12 megapixel center stage

00:52:51 ◼   ► landscape camera, which means it's long side now instead of the short side.

00:52:55 ◼   ► Uh it has an acoustic display instead of normal speakers.

00:52:59 ◼   ► Yeah this was fascinating.

00:53:00 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:53:00 ◼   ► Uh this is what Apple says.

00:53:02 ◼   ► Specially designed woofers are paired through the display to produce punchier bass and more

00:53:06 ◼   ► volume.

00:53:07 ◼   ► In addition, custom tweeters are now hidden between the glass and aluminum enclosure for

00:53:10 ◼   ► clearer highs.

00:53:11 ◼   ► The acoustic display also features a sealed enclosure that helps iPad Mini achieve its

00:53:15 ◼   ► IP sixty seven ratings, so the idea is they vibrate the screen.

00:53:18 ◼   ► That is the screen is your speaker.

00:53:19 ◼   ► And this is very uh well established technology in the TV world.

00:53:24 ◼   ► I I think my TV and has it, but it's been it's been in

00:53:26 ◼   ► TVs for years and years where I don't know why they do it in

00:53:29 ◼   ► TVs, but they do.

00:53:29 ◼   ► Like, to I guess to make the try to make the sound feel like

00:53:31 ◼   ► it's

00:53:33 ◼   ► not from like especially with flat screen, like where are you gonna put the

00:53:36 ◼   ► speakers?

00:53:36 ◼   ► If them front facing it's weird and th they all the T V makers

00:53:39 ◼   ► b want to have like no bezel type things where it just looks like

00:53:42 ◼   ► a screen.

00:53:42 ◼   ► So where do you put the speakers?

00:53:44 ◼   ► Now they're firing backwards, they're upwards.

00:53:45 ◼   ► I've got it.

00:53:46 ◼   ► Why don't we just make the screen shake?

00:53:48 ◼   ► And then some TVs went so far as to try to find like the

00:53:50 ◼   ► person's mouth on the screen and make the sound come out of it.

00:53:53 ◼   ► Anyway, shaking the screen is a well-established technology, but I will tell you that

00:53:58 ◼   ► shaking the screen is not an ideal speaker.

00:54:01 ◼   ► There's a reason real speakers are not made of a gigantic piece of glass.

00:54:06 ◼   ► 65 inches wide, right?

00:54:07 ◼   ► So I think it's a good idea for an iPad though, but I do

00:54:10 ◼   ► wonder how it's going to sound.

00:54:12 ◼   ► In my experience with televisions, it doesn't good.

00:54:16 ◼   ► I don't know if it sounds better or worse than crappy TV speakers, but

00:54:19 ◼   ► it sure doesn't

00:54:21 ◼   ► kind of real speaker that's facing you.

00:54:23 ◼   ► But for an iPad mini that probably had crappy speakers already.

00:54:26 ◼   ► Maybe it actually is better.

00:54:27 ◼   ► And especially if they put like more drivers into it.

00:54:29 ◼   ► And again, sealing it up so there's like fewer places for stuff to go

00:54:33 ◼   ► in.

00:54:33 ◼   ► I didn't see seven is.

00:54:35 ◼   ► I think the six is the dust and the seven is like splash resistance

00:54:38 ◼   ► or something, but not dunking.

00:54:39 ◼   ► I thought it was the other way around.

00:54:41 ◼   ► I'm not confident that that's right.

00:54:43 ◼   ► Well anyway, the the whole idea of like where are the holes?

00:54:45 ◼   ► We've got the USB C port which I think is already pretty well sealed,

00:54:48 ◼   ► but the speakers are always a problem because you gotta make them like the

00:54:50 ◼   ► Apple Watch where you have like there has to be a hole for the

00:54:52 ◼   ► speaker to work and when water fills it, we have a feature that pukes

00:54:55 ◼   ► the water back out, you know.

00:54:56 ◼   ► Uh the screen, uh using the screen as a speaker basically solves that.

00:55:00 ◼   ► And I think the iPad minis screen is big enough, perhaps, to get decent

00:55:03 ◼   ► base out of it, whereas the watch screen probably isn't So anyway, uh still

00:55:07 ◼   ► no face ID in case you were wondering.

00:55:09 ◼   ► This is not a tiny iPad Pro, even though an OLED screen, it remains

00:55:12 ◼   ► an iPad mini.

00:55:14 ◼   ► Segmented into that place.

00:55:16 ◼   ► Again, no promotion, no face ID, even though I feel like it could fit.

00:55:20 ◼   ► Uh Midnight and Starlight colors.

00:55:22 ◼   ► All the prices are up $100.

00:55:24 ◼   ► Nanotexture is also $100 and cellular is $150 extra.

00:55:27 ◼   ► Pre-order is October 28th and store is November 6th.

00:55:30 ◼   ► And also finally, they have a new smart folio case.

00:55:50 ◼   ► So I've gone back and forth with lots of you know iPad logistics over

00:55:55 ◼   ► the years.

00:55:56 ◼   ► Um at first I tried to use it as, you know, a tablet.

00:56:01 ◼   ► Um and then when the keyboard cases came out, I learned that it's so

00:56:06 ◼   ► much nicer entering text with a keyboard than any other way.

00:56:10 ◼   ► And that really killed my love for the iPad Mini.

00:56:13 ◼   ► Because while keyboard cases do exist for the iPad mini, they're so much more

00:56:18 ◼   ► cramped than the full-size iPad ones that they're they're pretty hard to use.

00:56:23 ◼   ► Also, Apple makes the best keyboard cases for iPads, and they don't make one

00:56:27 ◼   ► for the mini because it would be way too small.

00:56:29 ◼   ► Um Um so you're you're stuck with like third party ones that don't work

00:56:31 ◼   ► as well and just aren't as well made, honestly.

00:56:34 ◼   ► And so the external keyboard situation is pretty dire for the mini, and so

00:56:38 ◼   ► I kind of fell out of the mini for a while.

00:56:40 ◼   ► But the problem with the big iPads is that ever since they went to

00:56:43 ◼   ► the magic keyboard, especially, uh an iPad Pro with a keyboard is just really

00:56:49 ◼   ► heavy and bulky.

00:56:50 ◼   ► And at that point, you're so close to a MacBook that you might as

00:56:53 ◼   ► well just get a MacBook.

00:56:55 ◼   ► Um and so that's what I've been doing and so I really haven't used

00:56:58 ◼   ► the big iPads much at all uh for th for for in recent years.

00:57:02 ◼   ► Um but then I started working on Fineliner, which is a pencil-based drawing app,

00:57:08 ◼   ► and it works really well on the iPad.

00:57:11 ◼   ► Mini.

00:57:12 ◼   ► And the iPad mini happens to be a really good size for what I

00:57:15 ◼   ► want out of a note taking device.

00:57:17 ◼   ► It's great.

00:57:18 ◼   ► And so I started using my iPad mini again and I've just been so

00:57:22 ◼   ► happy using it.

00:57:24 ◼   ► And what they've done here with this new one is they have not pushed

00:57:29 ◼   ► the iPad Mini into being more of a laptop replacement.

00:57:35 ◼   ► They've made it much better at being what it already was.

00:57:39 ◼   ► So to be a laptop replacement, you need you need keyboard input.

00:57:43 ◼   ► Simple as that.

00:57:43 ◼   ► On-screen keyboards are nothing compared to a keyboard case.

00:57:47 ◼   ► But what this is pushing into is both, you know, small pencil use and

00:57:53 ◼   ► also consumption.

00:57:54 ◼   ► That's what many iPads, maybe even most iPads, are used for is watching video

00:58:01 ◼   ► and reading stuff and browsing the web and stuff like that.

00:58:03 ◼   ► And I think for that, if you're not like having to type a lot

00:58:07 ◼   ► of text, this is a great device.

00:58:10 ◼   ► Now, the new iPad Mini is only one gram heavier than the iPhone Duo.

00:58:18 ◼   ► And the screen is significantly larger.

00:58:21 ◼   ► It's it's in the same ballpark, but it's larger.

00:58:23 ◼   ► Um and I think if what you want is roughly that size class device

00:58:30 ◼   ► to use, you know, always open.

00:58:32 ◼   ► Yeah, you can't fold it, obviously.

00:58:34 ◼   ► Um, or as our as our friend joked in Slack, you can fold it

00:58:37 ◼   ► once.

00:58:38 ◼   ► Um I was gonna say if you have this thing in your house the

00:58:40 ◼   ► fear is you're gonna pick it up one day and try to fold it.

00:58:43 ◼   ► Yeah.

00:58:44 ◼   ► But um as as that device, as mostly a content consumption or very light

00:58:50 ◼   ► productivity device, uh or like note-taking or you know, something something with the pencil.

00:58:56 ◼   ► For that, it's awesome.

00:58:58 ◼   ► And you know, th look at what they what they are doing with this.

00:59:01 ◼   ► They made it a substantially lighter, a little thinner, and water resistant.

00:59:06 ◼   ► And with nanotexture, they're competing with Kindles.

00:59:09 ◼   ► That's what that is.

00:59:10 ◼   ► That's why they're doing that.

00:59:11 ◼   ► Kindles are great with glare, because they're e-ink.

00:59:14 ◼   ► So that's what nanotexture is for in this context.

00:59:17 ◼   ► And Kindles are water resistant.

00:59:19 ◼   ► That's what that's for in this context.

00:59:21 ◼   ► And so what this does is it takes a device that already it doesn't

00:59:26 ◼   ► do everything the iPad Pro does, but it does it it kind of goes

00:59:30 ◼   ► in places the iPad Pro doesn't go, and and they've taken it and m

00:59:34 ◼   ► moved it further that way.

00:59:36 ◼   ► It is way smaller and way lighter than the other iPads now.

00:59:41 ◼   ► It has water resistance, which none of the other iPads do, and it is

00:59:45 ◼   ► going to be much easier to hold in your hand for a long time.

00:59:49 ◼   ► Uh Um and by the way, nanotexture is way more affordable on this than

00:59:54 ◼   ► on the on the iPad Pro because the iPad Pro, I believe this is

00:59:56 ◼   ► still the case.

00:59:57 ◼   ► Doesn't still require the one terabyte uh configuration to get it.

01:20:18 ◼   ► It's 14 inch uh and the 14 inch screen well, the 14 inch screen

01:20:24 ◼   ► Um, according to Apple's animation on their own website, when they like zoom in

01:20:29 ◼   ► on like the pixels of the display, they show the sub pixel arrangement.

01:20:32 ◼   ► Um Um and I heard some people saying, I've never seen a subpixel arrangement

01:20:36 ◼   ► Uh there on every single OLED monitor in television.

01:20:38 ◼   ► It's this is the classic uh OLED arrangement of uh r RGB, but it's

01:20:44 ◼   ► a like a red rec uh a green rectangle on top of a red

01:20:48 ◼   ► square and to the right of that a taller blue rectangle.

01:20:52 ◼   ► It is not what the current fashion in OLED displays is, which is RGB

01:20:57 ◼   ► stripe, where they do a red, green, and a blue stripe, just like they

01:21:02 ◼   ► Um RGB stripe alloids do exist.

01:21:04 ◼   ► Many manufacturers sell them in very many different shapes and sizes on big monitors,

01:21:09 ◼   ► small monitors, phones, blah blah blah.

01:21:11 ◼   ► It's not as big a deal on the Mac because Mac OS, many, many

01:21:16 ◼   ► years ago stopped doing subpixel anti-aliasing, which is where they use the R, the

01:21:19 ◼   ► G, and the B subpixels as a way to make jaggy lines by using

01:21:23 ◼   ► individual subpixels.

01:21:25 ◼   ► The Mac hasn't done that in years and doesn't, but if you're using an

01:21:28 ◼   ► OS that does do that, like Windows, if you don't have an RGB stripe

01:21:32 ◼   ► subpixel layout and you try to look at text, they get weird color fringing

01:21:36 ◼   ► I don't think it will be noticeable on this.

01:22:11 ◼   ► So anyway, it's an amazing screen, but beware it is not RGB Stripe.

01:22:39 ◼   ► There's lots of different kinds of burn in protection.

01:22:41 ◼   ► There's pixel cycling where they they provision extra pixels on the display.

01:22:45 ◼   ► Not pixel cycling, like uh pixel shifting, where they provision extra pixels and then

01:22:50 ◼   ► move the display around a few pixels at a time so that it's not

01:22:53 ◼   ► in the same exact place.

01:22:55 ◼   ► There's you know static logo detection where they did all stuff from the TV

01:22:58 ◼   ► industry.

01:22:59 ◼   ► None of these things can really help in the end, because if you have

01:23:03 ◼   ► some element that's on your screen and it's very bright and it doesn't move,

01:23:07 ◼   ► shifting it around is just going to smear the burn in edges, which is

01:23:11 ◼   ► better than a sharp burn-in edge, but it's still burning.

01:23:14 ◼   ► Uh and reminder how burn in an OLED is because the pixels have organic

01:23:18 ◼   ► material in them that wears out the more you use it.

01:23:21 ◼   ► And the more you use it, meaning how bright are you driving these pixels
